Newlyweds left in limbo by home office Exclusive

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A couple whose new married life has been on hold for nearly a year by COVID-19 visa delays have told the News how the ‘unfair’ system left them in limbo.

Anthony Schaverien and Winnie Sham, from Herne Hill, married in December 2020.

They had met and fallen in love while working in Hong Kong, later deciding to move to the UK, Tony’s home country, to start their new life together.

As Winnie is a Canadian national she first had to apply for a fiancee visa and, after marrying, upgrade to a spousal visa.

But, due to a huge backlog at the Home Office, both applications became stuck, with the pair waiting over eight months for a decision.

Winnie was even unable to join her fiance in the UK between February 2020 and October 2020, only arriving two months before their wedding, all during the height of the pandemic.

Once allowed in the country she still had to wait for her visa to be upgraded to a spousal one and during that time was unable to work or even apply for jobs - leaving both of them reliant on 36-year-old Tony’s single income from his work as a data analyst.

They say they are among hundreds of families who were effectively left in limbo during the pandemic.

Usually applicants can pay around £800 to

fast track their visa application; a service which can give decisions within as little as 48 hours.

However, this option was suspended during COVID-19.

Nonsensically, fast track applications have now restarted - but only for new applicants and not those already stuck in the system Speaking to us earlier this week, Tony and Winnie explained how the delays had affected them over the last year.

Tony said: “Winnie has been unable to work at all since arriving in the UK in October and this delay has significantly impacted her mental wellbeing and ability to restart a life here. We would like to purchase a home, build a life together and, eventually, start a family in the UK, but all of this has been put on hold while we wait for Winnie’s visa application to be processed.”

Winnie, 33, added: “We at least managed to celebrate our wedding but the impact of the delays with my visa continues to be the same and my mental wellbeing has been shattered.

“I haven’t been able to build any social network because of lockdown and being unable to get a job.

“We have been reliant on savings and a single income from Tony to get us through. I thought it was an easy and straightforward process. We had to demonstrate a lasting relationship for my first visa and then the spousal one is much easier in that it was about producing evidence that we have got married.

“Eighteen weeks later I started doubting myself. It is like being in a black hole where you

“We’ve played everything by the book and appreciated that during the pandemic we couldn’t do the priority service, but now they’re allowing it again and letting other people through who have applied after us - how is it fair that other people are getting decisions in two days?

“If you have a target for processing within eight weeks and are struggling to make that target and leaving people for months without a decision then why open it up to other people to jump the queue?”

In some good news, after the News contacted the Home Office this week, a spokesperson confirmed Winnie’s application had finally been approved. A spokesperson said: “Like many services, the pandemic had an impact on visa processing times. The vast majority of these applications have now been decided and a small remaining number are in the process of being completed. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. Mrs Sham’s application has been granted and she has been informed of this decision.”

The Home Office says it has hired additional staff to help clear its backlog and new applications are now being processed within usual times.

Some Bermondsey people could be in Peckham constituency

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Some people in Bermondsey would end up in a new Peckham constituency under new parliamentary boundary changes announced recently.

The Boundary Commission for England has released new constituency maps that it says would make for a fairer parliament, as each MP would have roughly the same amount of voters.

In Southwark’s case, it would mean four slightly different constituencies. The new Bermondsey and Borough constituency would be a slightly smaller version of Bermondsey and Old Southwark. It would be made up of eight Southwark wards: Borough & Bankside, Chaucer, London Bridge & West Bermondsey, North Bermondsey, North

Walworth, Rotherhithe, South Bermondsey and Surrey Docks.

The Old Kent Road ward, which is currently in Bermondsey and Old Southwark, would be in the new Peckham constituency, under the new boundaries. Peckham is currently part of Harriet Harman’s Camberwell and Peckham constituency.

Peckham would now be made up of eight wards: Champion Hill, Faraday, Nunhead & Queen's Road, Old Kent Road, Peckham, Peckham Rye, Rye Lane and St Giles. It would lose Camberwell Green, which would join the new Vauxhall and Camberwell constituency to the west.

Meanwhile Dulwich and West Norwood would become Dulwich and Sydenham. The new borough would lose the area around Loughborough Junction to a Clapham and Brixton constituency, and Tulse Hill See page 23

to Streatham. It would gain the areas around Forest Hill and Sydenham from the Lewisham and Penge constituency.

These would be the first boundary changes since 2010. Just ten per cent of seats would remain unchanged. The total number of constituencies would stay at 650, but England would gain ten seats, taking its number to 543. Wales would have 32 - down by eight - while Scotland would have 57, a decrease of two seats. London will gain two.

Constituencies must have between 69,724 and 77,062 registered voters, other than islands like the Isle of Wight which have been given special dispensation.

Tim Bowden, secretary to the Boundary Commission for England, said: "Today's proposals mark the first time people get to see what the new map of Parliamentary constituencies might look like. But they are

just the Commission's initial thoughts. Help us draw the line to make the number of electors in each Parliamentary constituency more equal.”

This will factor into the next set of proposals, which will form the basis for the second consultation early next year. The third and last consultation will take place in the autumn of that year. The Boundary Commission will give its final plans in summer 2023.

The government then has to make changes within four months, meaning these constituency changes would be likely to come into effect before the next general election, which is scheduled for the end of 2024.

almost 101 and looking for Good Samaritan

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A 100-year-old Bermondsey man wants to buy a pint for the “absolute diamond” who stayed with him for an hour after he fell and suffered injuries that could have been catastrophic.

John Cooper, whom we interviewed shortly after he reached his century last year, was walking home along Southwark Park Road in November. He tripped on an uneven paving stone and fell over.

“If I’d have gone straight over that would have been a big problem, but I went sideways,” he said. “There's a lot of shops along there but there was one that’s been made into a house. Luckily I hit that - if I had hit the shops, with the force I went, I would have gone straight through the front window.”

John broke three ribs and had a punctured lung, as well as a slight fracture to his pelvis. The skin had to be glued back onto his head where he fell over and he also tore the skin off his knuckles. He was still conscious.

“I could see my house across the road,” John said. “I was thinking ‘if I can get there, I can be okay’. But this bloke came along and told me to stay there. He said ‘you’ll be alright for a while’.

“If I’d gone home, what would have happened there I don’t know. I didn’t realise the situation I was in.”

Three young women also came and helped clean the blood off John with some tissues they got from a nearby shop. An ambulance was soon called.

“Someone said ‘how old are you?’ I said 100 - whether or not they believed me I don’t know!,” John added.

“When the girls went, the bloke stayed.

He must have been there for about an hour. He was an absolute diamond.

When the ambulance got there, they tried to walk me but with this pelvis thing, every time I put my leg down it bent, so they ended up carrying me.”

John wanted to stay in touch so he could thank his good Samaritan properly. The paramedic gave the man a piece of paper to write down his phone number, but it got lost at some point in the journey to the hospital, so John has

no way of getting in touch to thank him.

“I want to find him to say thank you but I don’t know what to get him,” John added. “If he has a girlfriend I could get her chocolates but she didn’t save me he did.”

John usually goes to his local pub the Ancient Foresters on Southwark Park road three times a week “to get out the house, for a change of scene”. He said that he thought a good way to thank his helper would be to buy him a pint.

After his fall John was rushed to St Thomas’ hospital, where he stayed for about two weeks. When doctors discovered the punctured lung, they told him there were two options: leave it to heal itself, which was unlikely, or drill through to drain the fluid that had got in there.

“I said ‘well it’s up to you’. A couple of hours later they came back, about four or five nurses came around and they were all watching. I thought ‘I’ve pulled!’” The operation was a success.

John said he was not worried about getting Covid-19 in his hospital stay, even though this was before vaccinations. “Funnily enough it never even crossed my mind,” he added. He has since been vaccinated.

After getting out, he spent three weeks recuperating at his daughter Pat’s house, before moving back to his Southwark Park Road home, where he has lived since the war. Pat often comes to visit, with John joking that she acts as his “translator” on the occasions when he doesn’t hear something. He said that he had recovered well from his injuries and is not in pain.

This summer John has been watching the Euros, although he hasn’t been too impressed with the general style of play in the modern game. “It’s just pass, pass, pass. No one tries to shoot any more.”

John was a keen football player in his youth, turning out for the RAF when he served in the Middle East in the Second World War. One of his teammates was Harry Johnston, who later captained Blackpool in the famous ‘Matthews final’ in 1953. “He was good to play with - not up to my standard of course,” John joked.

Away from the Euros, John has kept busy by reading and playing codeword

games. He proudly recites quotations from Shakespeare and Walter Scott.

John turns 101 at the end of June.

Extended Covid-19 restrictions mean like last year there will be no big celebrations but he said he didn’t want a party anyway. “I just want to forget about it!,” he said.

Hughes payout over ‘phone hacking’ claim

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Former Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Sir Simon Hughes said that he hopes his payout by the publisher of the Sun newspaper will set a precedent and help others “to obtain justice”.

Liberal Democrat Sir Simon claims that he was the victim of “unlawful information gathering by various journalists and executives at the Sun” regarding his sexuality. He won “substantial” damages last week from News Group Newspapers (NGN), which publishes the Sun and used to put out the now-defunct News of the World.

The Sun ran a story in 2006 with the headline: ‘A second Limp-Dem confesses: I’m Gay Too.’ In the interview Sir Simon said he had had relationships with both men and women. His lawyer said that he felt that he had “no choice but to cooperate” with the newspaper at the time.

The News of the World closed down after the phone hacking scandal of 2011. NGN has always said that the illegal activity was confined to the Sunday newspaper, and did not take place at the Sun. Despite the payout, NGN has not admitted liability in this case.

Sir Simon, who lost his seat in parliament in 2015 after 32 years of service, told the News this week: “Following advice, I took legal action above all to make sure that those who work in the media act within the law,

and that information belonging to any individual and which is personal, private and confidential cannot be unlawfully accessed, shared and used.

“This action was taken by me just as much to support others who have been targeted in similar ways, particularly if they have less experience of dealing with the media, as to establish my own rights. I very much hope that my action will help others who were the victims of similar unlawful practices also to obtain justice and will make it clear that such illegal practices cannot be carried on in the future.

“This action followed my discovery in 2017 that journalists working at The Sun newspaper had during my time as a Member of Parliament obtained private information through unlawful information gathering techniques, used with the knowledge and approval of Senior Executives at The Sun and following activity by private investigators which I believe was also unlawful.

“This was then followed by concealment by NGN representatives who denied their involvement in unlawful activities, and I believe deliberately destroyed relevant documents.

Sir Simon had already won a payout from NGN in 2012. At the time he called the phone hacking “criminal behaviour on an industrial scale”. He was among several people, including Steve Coogan, Alastair Campbell and Paul Gascoigne, who settled with the Rupert Murdochowned publisher.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Kirby Estate residents in Bermondsey have made special t-shirts to show their support for Christian Eriksen, the Danish captain who collapsed on the pitch last Saturday in his team’s opening match of Euro 2020.

People living on the estate, which as we have reported has a long-running tradition of showing its support for

the England team at international tournaments with a huge display of St George’s Crosses, said they were “hanging on every word” as news came through about Eriksen’s condition.

The attacking midfielder, who moved to Inter Milan last year after a six-and-ahalf season stint at Tottenham Hotspur, suffered a heart attack and collapsed unconscious just before half-time in Denmark’s match against Finland. He was given urgent medical attention and taken to hospital, where Danish football

authorities later confirmed his condition was stable.

Chris Dowse, one of the organisers of the flag display, said he was listening to the match on the radio as he was driving to Salisbury on Saturday afternoon.

“I was hanging on every word they were saying,” Chris told the News. “I knew he wasn’t dead because they would surely just have evacuated the whole stadium, but it was shocking to see.”

“When we found out he was going to be okay, there was just a sheer sense of relief.”

Chris is a Liverpool fan but said club allegiance goes out of the window in times like this.

“It’s not about any team, it’s about football itself,” he added. “If it happened to a young guy like that, it shows it could happen to anyone at any time. And if it’s not your time it’s not your time.”

Chris and the two other organisers on the estate decided to make t-shirts to support Eriksen. They bought the t-shirts and Chris’ partner - “the costume department” added the slogans herself on Saturday evening after the game. “It was just a nice touch,” he said.

The t-shirts read ‘Get Well Soon Christian Eriksen’ but Chris said if there was room he would have added praise for the speed and attention of everyone involved in keeping the Dane alive.

“The quickness of it, how fast the doctors got out there, the English referee Anthony Taylor waving them on, the players surrounding them. They all deserve a lot of credit, it was unbelievable really.”

Although the Danish TV operator was providing the feed, the BBC has been criticised in some quarters for cutting back to the studio quick enough and continuing to show the footage of Eriksen as he was on the ground getting treatment in the aftermath of his heart attack.

“Look how quickly they can cut away to a different angle when a streaker runs onto the pitch," Chris said. "I completely agree with the criticism to be fair. Especially when they zoomed in on Eriksen’s wife as she was being comforted.”

Chris was more positive about the England team’s 1-0 victory over Croatia on Sunday. “We looked frightening going forward, if we had taken the chances early on I think it would have been an even better result.”

Woman arrested after ‘pub brawl’ in Bermondsey

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A woman was arrested after a fight in the Queen Victoria pub in Bermondsey last Sunday night left two people in hospital.

The woman, in her twenties, was arrested in a park near the Southwark Park Road pub on suspicion of common assault, actual bodily harm and affray at about 8pm on Sunday.

Police said they were on proactive patrols in the area when they were told about the pub brawl at about 7.50pm that night.

They found a man and a woman at the pub who had injuries that were not life-threatening. Unconfirmed reports suggested that one victim had a cut to the face and another was hit in the head with a metal pole. The cause of the fight is unclear. Police did not say if anyone else was involved.

A photo of the scene appears to show at least five officers gathered outside the pub, as well as a police van.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A Brandon Estate family have been left ‘disgusted’ after being ordered to take down their patriotic flag display to support England in the Euros - asking ‘why is there one rule for the Kirby and another for us?’

Father-of-four Simon Paul said his children, two of whom are disabled and attend a special school in Stockwell, had been left in tears after he and his partner Cassandra Fairweather received a letter received from Southwark Council telling them the bunting draped outside their balcony in Morton House was a ‘fire risk’.

The family, who have lived on the Camberwell estate for a decade, said it was news to them as they have always put up a display for the football, at Christmas and at Halloween without any complaints.

“I’ve never had any letters like this before,” he said. “They’re tiny and only from a pound shop as I couldn’t find any bigger ones so I can’t see how they can be a ‘fire hazard’.

“I think it’s disgusting really, and so horrible as my kids have been crying over it and are really excited about the Euros.”

Simon, a huge Millwall fan whose family live in Bermondsey, says he can’t believe his relatively small display has attracted the ire of council officers when the Kirby is decked out every year with no trouble.

“I have family on Kirby Estate and sometimes I’ve even helped put their flags up,” he explained.

“And I’m not even allowed to have six little ones above my head, it doesn’t make sense.”

He doesn’t know whether anyone on the

estate has complained about the flags, but is quick to reaffirm that for him the flag is a symbol of pride.

“It has no racial discrimination attached to it.

My wider family is multicultural - half of them are Jamaican.

“What really made me boil is that when I contacted the council and said I wouldn’t be taking them down they told me they’d ‘proceed to court’.

“I put it on Facebook and it went a bit viral, I had 300 comments in no time.

“We have been through so much over the last year so let’s celebrate.

“You can’t have one rule for one and other for us - let’s have one rule for all.”

The News asked Southwark Council why the bunting was a hazard for Brandon Estate and not Kirby Estate.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan said in response: “We hate to spoil anyone’s fun and the football is such a great, positive occasion for everyone but we cannot compromise on fire safety – residents’ safety is the most important thing for us to consider.

“The fire risk assessment is unique to each building which means the advice is different in each case.

“In this building, it’s not safe to block, or partially obstruct the balconies as they provide an escape route during a fire.”

cyclist warns of moped thugs exclusive

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A man who was injured after being deliberately pushed off his bike on Greendale cycle path is warning others, saying he ‘could have been killed’.

Andrew Mayers, a 59-year-old carer based in Dulwich, was cycling along the route through Denmark Hill and Dulwich shortly after 11pm on Thursday, June 10, when he heard a moped engine accelerate behind him and soon felt a hand on his back shove him into the side of the road.

The moped had come up behind him without its lights.

He fell off his bike into the undergrowth at the side of the path, and the moped sped off.

“When I staggered to my feet I was covered in blood from a million cuts, but amazingly no broken bones,” he told the News.

“My front wheel was mangled Into oblivion. I was extremely fortunate not to break my neck.”

He has reported the incident to police, but contacted this newspaper to make others aware in case it is not just an isolated incident.

“This was a deliberate, planned attack,” he explained. “It is a very busy route for cyclists - and they should all know about this new danger.”

Police confirmed they had been contacted on Friday, June 11 and arranged to visit Andrew the same day.

No one has been arrested so far.

Zoey mauled to death as concerns mount over dog attacks The Jack Russell died of its injuries after ‘attack by two pit bull type dogs’

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A family whose pet Jack Russell was mauled to death by two ‘pit bull type’ dogs says their owners are ‘well known’ in the area and the dangerous animals are responsible for a spate of attacks across south London.

Ulrick McKnight and his partner Sonia Faleiro were in Norwood Park on the evening of June 7 with their young daughter and pet terrier Zoey when two dogs ran over and launched an attack.

Writing on neighbourhood social networking website NextDoor, Ulrick said: “My family was sitting under the tree near the path, having a picnic.

“We realised that the dogs were approaching us, at least 50 feet from their owners, and I went to pick up Zoey.

“The largest of the dogs grabbed her by the head, locking its jaw. The owners did nothing.

“I ended up literally fighting the dog trying to free Zoey, and then the second one attacked us as well.

“I was laying on the ground with my arms around the first dog’s neck in a headlock at this point.

“I found out afterwards from my four year-old-daughter that the third dog was somewhere close to her while my wife was screaming at the owners to get their dogs.”

One of the dogs’ owners, a man, appeared and started screaming at Ulrick’s family before leaving the scene.

Zoey was rushed to the emergency vets in Paxton Green, near Gipsy Hill,

but sadly died from her injuries. At the time of the attack she was fifteenyears-old and blind.

Ulrick was also injured trying to save her life, and the entire family has been left traumatised.

The dogs that attacked Zoey were off the lead and unmuzzled. They have been described as resembling banned pit bull type breeds.

Friends and other residents, who have seen images of the dogs and owners circulating online, have

reported seeing them in nearby parks including in Crystal Palace Park, Wells Park, Gipsy Road and Upper Norwood Recreation Ground.

Despite this, and various other allegations of previous attacks on both dogs and children, as of Monday this week no arrests had been made.

The family have now set up a petition to City Hall calling for tougher action, believing that if the animals are not seized and action taken against their owners it will not be long before

someone - possibly a child - is seriously hurt.

In an update on the petition page, ‘Stop the Killer Dogs of Crystal Palace’ which has now been signed by more than 3,000 people, Sonia said: “We are concerned that Zoey’s killing seems to be only the latest in a serious of brutal attacks, and without police taking this matter seriously the attacks will continue and worsen.

“It is too late for our Zoey, and for our family, but it is not too late to stop it happening to someone else.”

In a statement, the Met said: “Police were called at 17:33hrs on Monday, 7 June to Norwood Park SE27 after a woman reported that her dog had been attacked by two other dogs.

“The dogs were then allegedly placed on leads by a man who left the scene with a woman and two children. The woman's dog later died. There have been no arrests at this time. Enquiries continue.”

It is one in a spate of dog attacks reported in the local area, many of which are unrelated incidents.

In another reported incident over the end of May Bank Holiday Saturday, a ten-year-old epileptic lurcher was attacked, while on a lead in Crystal Pal Park by a ‘staffie-type’ dog. The lurcher survived the attack but one of its owners was bitten in the face while trying to rescue it.

Calais reached in Palace to Paris run

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A fundraising duo running the distance from Crystal Palace football ground to Paris over the course of a month in honour of their brother-in-law say their efforts are now ‘mind over matter’ as they cope with 28 degree heat, pain from running with no rest days, and daily ice baths.

As we reported last week, the pair are raising funds for Cure Leukaemia in the hope research can help their brotherin-law and former Southwark News journalist Geoff Hill and others like him who have exhausted conventional treatment options.

Geoff, a father of three and former deputy editor of this paper, has been battling the disease since 2017. Since his shock diagnosis he has undergone countless rounds of radiotherapy, chemotherapy, a bone marrow and a stem cell transplant only to be told his cancer, which was in remission, has returned.

Lee and Jordan decided to start the challenge from Selhurst Park, as Geoff is a life-long Crystal Palace fan, at the beginning of June and will run every single day, with no breaks, until they have covered all 460kms.

Now half way through, Lee, who is married to Geoff’s sister, told the News: “The pace isn’t anything to shout about

at the moment, we’re just putting one foot in front of the other.

“It’s been a hell of a rollercoaster for Geoff and the whole family and the last twelve months especially have been very difficult.

“We were very much part of his support network and with Covid we felt pretty useless.

“He’s having to go to hospital four times a week on his own and living as a prisoner in his house.

“We wanted to give Geoff a bit of focus away from treatment, bring some positivity to all of us, and do something proactive so it feels like we

are contributing.

“We have been absolutely humbled by the way the club has supported us and the Palace community.”

Although both are fit and active neither have a track record of marathon running, let alone taking part in such a physically and mentally demanding challenge.

“We are motivated by Geoff’s resilience, that keeps us going each day,” Lee added.

“We are fairly good at looking after ourselves, but I’m not a runner, I have never run a marathon or even a 10k competitively or anything like that.

“This is definitely uncharted territory.”

Before starting they did two months’ training and are now depending on physio, mental resilience and a bit of luck to keep them going and injury free and, in Lee’s case, a daily ice bath.

“It’s hurting each day,” he admitted.

“My calves and hamstrings are tightening but so far - touch wood - no injuries but our time is slowing down.

“I know there are going to be some dark days ahead but if we can just get through them the light will be there at the end. And our friends are coming and joining us on the runs a few times

a week to support us.”

They have also received fantastic support from other Palace fans and the wider community, including a personal video message from ultra marathon runner and comedian Eddie Izzard.

Jordan told the News: “It's been very tough and we're not used to running these distances but at all times we keep coming back to the most important point; that there has been an amazing amount of support for us to do this challenge, from the people helping us organise it to the people who have donated funds.

“It spurs you on to get up early or at the end of a tough day get out on the road to cover that distance.

“In a perfect world we would have hoped to catch the Eurostar to finish in Paris but that’s just not possible at the moment so we are covering it in loops around our area and chipping away at it slowly.

“We are now at the longest part of the journey, Calais to Paris.”

Before even starting the challenge they had already smashed their initial fundraising target of £15,000 and decided to push it up to £25,000.

Paper Garden plans for a Paper Garden Shed in Rotherhithe

Global Generation, an educational charity is already running the Paper Garden in the area. The charity, whose efforts in Southwark are supported by Canada Water Masterplan developer British Land, now wants to take over a disused industrial building on Quebec Way, round the back of its current site in the printworks.

Global Generation says its new site would be partly designed by young people and, like the current space, would host educational programmes and activities for locals.

“Submitting our planning application for the new Paper Garden Shed is a real milestone for us, confirming our commitment to the area and the people we serve,” the charity’s founding director Jane Riddiford said.

Dead man pulled from the Thames in Bermondsey

officer, named by the inquest only as YX99 to protect his identity, said that he shot the killer twice after seeing wires wrapped around his waist.

He added: "Literally the first second the shot became available, I took it, to save myself and to try and save the people around me."

Coroner Mark Lucraft QC directed the jurors at the inquest to return a verdict of lawful killing, on the grounds that they were trying to protect themselves and others in the immediate area from a potential suicide belt.

An earlier inquest into the deaths of Mr Merritt and Ms Jones heard that Khan was seen as one of the UK’s 70 highest-risk prisoners during his eight-year stint in jail.

Notable prison episodes included claiming he had access to a weapon and wanted to “do someone in the eye or neck”, and attacking another prisoner while shouting Allahu Akbar in 2011. He was later found with a stockpile of chemicals in his cell.

Even as late as October 2018, officials thought he might “return to his old ways” when released from prison.

Met Police commissioner Neil Basu praised the professionalism of his officers and their “heroic” speed in getting to the scene of the attack.

“However, as we have heard over the past few weeks, despite those efforts, two bright young people – Saskia Jones and Jack Merritt - were tragically killed during the attack,” he added. Following the inquests into their deaths, the jury found

Usman Khan stabbed Mr Merritt, 25, and Ms Jones, 23, at the event in Fishmongers’ Hall on the north side of the Thames on November 29 2019, before running out onto the bridge, where police shot at him twenty times, according to the inquest into his death, which concluded last week Khan, 28, was wearing what turned out to be a fake suicide belt and officers had been given permission to carry out a “critical shot”, with police chiefs fearing that he might detonate it.

Twelve of the twenty shots hit Khan. A forensic pathologist found that he died of multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen.

Khan, who had only been released from prison eleven months before the event, was chased onto London Bridge by three men, including a current and former prisoner, after fatally wounding Mr Merritt and Ms Jones at the prisoner rehabilitation event.

One of them was jabbing at him with a sharp narwhal tusk taken from the hall.

The man with the tusk had almost killed Khan before police arrived, piercing his neck very close to the carotid artery and jugular vein.

Officers soon got to the scene and Khan shouted that he had a bomb. One police

that there were omissions and failures in the management of the attacker and in the sharing of information and guidance by the agencies responsible.

“As the Head of Counter Terrorism Policing, I said immediately after the verdict that those failures and omissions were simply unacceptable and I would like to reiterate that I am deeply sorry we were not better at this in November 2019.

“Many things have changed since this attack to the way that we and other agencies work to manage terrorist offenders. The Government has made changes to the law, the Ministry of Justice has strengthened prison and probation services, and we in policing have developed a far stronger national offender management model, which is being implemented across the country.

“We now await the Coroner’s Prevention of Future Deaths report to see whether there is anything more we may be able to do to improve how we manage terrorist offenders when they are released from prison.

“But my final words are reserved for Jack and Saskia," he said. "They were two wonderful and talented young people who already achieved so much in their lives, which were tragically cut short.

"My thoughts and the thoughts of everyone in policing are with the friends, families and loved ones of Jack and Saskia, and they are with everyone who was injured, traumatised or affected by this attack."

“Our mission is all about collaboration, be it with British Land or the local schools and community groups we work with. With technology becoming increasingly present in our lives there is an even greater need for us to provide opportunities for children and young people to engage with and be inspired by the creativity of the natural world.

Our move to the new Paper Garden will help us to do this by giving us a more permanent home.”

Saul Collyns, Community Executive at British Land, added: “We’re excited to help Global Generation continue to be part of Canada Water. Over the past few years, they’ve been working with local schools and community groups to get to know the area, grow partnerships and develop programmes and activities which respond to the local context and interests, and hosted hundreds of local people in their space in the Printworks.

“The new Paper Garden will be created out of reclaimed materials from the development and will provide a fantastic community resource for years to come.”

Officers think the man, who was found by Cherry Garden Pier, was between 30 and 40 years old. They were called by a woman who said she saw the body while out for a birthday walk this morning. River police and lifeboat crews rushed to the scene.

A spokesperson for the Met Police said: "Police were called at 10:39hrs on Monday, 14 June following concerns raised by a member of the public about a body in the river in the vicinity of Cherry Garden Pier, SE16.

"The police marine unit attended alongside the RNLI and a search was carried out.

"The body of an adult male, believed to be approximately 30 to 40 years of age, was recovered from the water shortly before 11:00hrs. He was deceased. Enquiries are under way to determine his identity."

Sunday working causes outrage

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Builders on a major Bermondsey site whose developers have applied for extended hours worked on Sunday (June 13), according to local residents - despite this being against both the current rules and the new timetable they have suggested.

Many local residents were already against the extended building hours that Tide asked Southwark Council for last month for its student housing block at 272 St James’s Road. The developer wanted to put builders on staggered shifts from 8am-9pm, Monday-Friday and up to 6pm on Saturdays.

Tide said this would help builders keep to social distancing rules while getting back on track to finish the building by the end of August, when 250 students are supposed to move in.

Covid-19 has delayed progress on the building, the developer said.

Locals argue this would be a huge

disruption to their daily lives, on top of the “unbearable” noise they are already enduring.

Old Kent Road ward councillors also spoke out against the proposals, as we reported last week. Cllrs Evelyn Akoto, Richard Livingstone and Michael Situ back up claims that builders were already coming to the site outside the agreed building hours.

Neither the current building schedule nor the timetable Tide wants to move to would let them build on Sundays or public holidays. And yet locals said they were disturbed by builders this Sunday.

One man told the News he went to the site on Sunday to remonstrate with the builders. Another local said in an objection to the application for longer working hours that the alleged rule breaking “speaks volumes about the total disregard they have for those most affected by the building noise & pollution.”

Tide did not respond to a request for comment last week. The developer has been asked for comment again for this week’s paper.

Southwark children could wear masks in schools again

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark school children could have to wear masks again after a rise in Covid-19 infections, according to the borough’s director of public health.

Sangeeta Leahy told the health and wellbeing board last week that she would be asking Public Health England for permission to bring masks back in schools. Students have not been required to wear face coverings in schools since May 17.

The news comes as coronavirus cases in Southwark more than

doubled in the first week of June to 211, although hospitalisations remained stable. The seven-day rate of infection was 66 per 100,000 people, an increase of 137 per cent compared with the previous week.

Most London boroughs now have rates above 25 per 100,000. Lambeth had the highest rate at 81 per 100,000.

Ms Leahy said that case rates were increasing rapidly - but that the vaccination programme was also going well.

“Our children are seeing more infections,” she added. “And that is what we would expect, as they are not yet the vaccinated population."

Borough Market’s historic move to open on Sundays

Ready made street food will not be included

Borough Market will start opening on Sundays for the first time in its modern history at the end of the month.

The popular food market by London Bridge station has normally been open

from Monday-Saturday. It will open on Sunday for the first time on June 27.

Sunday hours will be shorter than usual, with stalls open from 10am-2pm.

Market managers aim to help shoppers have more choice over when they visit.

Market stalls selling ready made street food will not be open on Sundays.

Darren Henaghan, managing director of Borough Market, said: “Extending our trading from six to seven days per week is a historic move for Borough Market.

We wanted to give our customers more choice on when to visit us and for Sunday opening, we’re returning to our roots.

“Back in 1998 we reinvented ourselves from a wholesale centre to a retail market for high quality food and we want to recapture that atmosphere – expert traders and producers providing advice and sharing stories with shoppers who love food.

“From picking up the perfect joint for a Sunday roast complete with all the seasonal veg, to discovering something new for the cheeseboard along with freshly baked bread and wine to accompany, we love Sundays and hope our visitors will too!”

The market has stayed open throughout the Covid-19 lockdowns.

Across London most boroughs now have rates above 25 per 100,000, with Lambeth recording the highest rate in the same seven-day timeframe; at 81 per 100,000.

In Southwark, over 139,000 people registered with a GP have now received their first dose and nearly 83,000 have had the second jab.

Research shows that the first jab provides a good level of protection from about three or four weeks after it is administered, but a second dose is also needed for it to be as effective as possible and to provide lasting protection.

There are also concerns that vaccines are less effective at guarding against symptomatic illness from the Kent variant.

Early research predicts that the first dose of the jab is around 34 per cent protective against this strain of the disease, rising to 81 per cent after receiving both jabs - on a par with other vaccines.

The Indian variant is believed to be about 60 per cent more transmissible than the Kent variant, which has been the dominant strain of the Coronavirus in the UK since it was first identified last year.

In the same period hospital admissions and bed occupancy in the borough remained stable, pointing to the success of the vaccination programme.

In the week up to June 4 there were 211 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the borough.

The seven-day incidence rate was 66 per 100,000 people, an increase of 137 per cent compared with the previous week.

four women violently attacked by ‘knife-wielding suspect’ in East Dulwich, after police fail to turn up to 999 call

Four women were violently attacked over the weekend in East Dulwich, after police failed to respond to a 999 call from a woman who said she was strangled in the street in front of her child.

The terrified mother was left waiting for a response car that never arrived on Friday, June 11, after calling 999 four times.

She says she had been approached and strangled by a stranger in front of her ten-year-old son shortly before 9pm.

The victim reported that an ‘unknown man’ had attacked her out of the blue on Wood Vale, on the border of East Dulwich and Sydenham, and tried to smash her head against a wall while her distraught child ran to try and find help.

Speaking to the News this week the woman, who asked to remain anonymous, described her fears that the perpetrator not only remained at large but could go on to attack other women, saying strangulation in particular is a ‘red flag’ for further, escalating violence.

“It probably lasted about thirty seconds but there are significant marks around my neck,” she told the News.

“He just stopped and I managed to run and call 999. They said a car would arrive within an hour.

At this point I could still see him on the street.”

She managed to get herself and her son to safety and continued trying the police.

“I called four times that night as no one turned up. Eventually it got to 1.30am and I hadn’t been able to go to sleep.

“I was so tired and they said that someone would come round to my house on Monday.

“The police could have found him straight away but now there’s not much they can do.”

Police have now admitted they were unable to race to the scene after dealing with a series of emergencies across the city the same night.

“No one responded to the 999 call and it’s really quite frightening,” she added.

...but police have launched a ‘walk and talk’ scheme to help women feel safer walking the streets

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The attacks in East Dulwich once again highlight the dangers for women on the streets and expose the weaknesses in the Met’s plans to tackle violence against women.

Last week Southwark Police announced they will target patrols in areas women feel less safe as they set up a new ‘walk and talk scheme’ across the borough.

The Met says it is cracking down on violence against women, and wants to build stronger relationships with residents, to ensure officers are aware of hotspot areas for harassment.

Last month 117 people arrested in a series of reactive and proactive arrests for offences including domestic assault, sexual offences, and violence against women and girls across London.

The force has also set up new ‘predatory offender units’ focused on snaring violent offenders, based in every command unit.

Sergeant Becky Perkins, from the Central South Neighbourhoods Team, who leads the initiative, said: “The walk and talk initiative is just one of the many things going on across London to crack down on violence against women and girls.

“We want the women in our area to feel confident and safe on our streets and we hope that by walking with them on their usual routes and hearing from them first-hand what their concerns are we will be able to act and build trust.

“We know there are many women out there who don’t feel completely safe walking London’s streets and we want those women to know we are here for you, we are listening and we are doing all we can to make the streets safer.

“Recent events have heightened concerns around violence amongst women in London, and the Met

understands and shares those concerns.

“We appreciate and acknowledge public concern and anger, and the desire for action to be taken which keeps women and girls safe. We agree.

“I’d like to thank all of the women who have come forward to take part in this walk. It is important for us to know what your concerns are so we can do everything we can to resolve them.

“No woman should feel unsafe walking the streets or taking public transport. Working closely with our communities is a vital part of what we do, we hope this new initiative will help to make women feel safer in our area and beyond in London.”

Walk and Talk participant Miriam Wickham said: “It’s good to know that the Met is trying to listen to the public, make changes and really see how women feel.”

Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove, responsible for policing in Lambeth and Southwark, added: “All women have a right to feel safe. By connecting local women to local female police officers through the “Walk and Talk” initiative we can improve our understanding of the experiences of local women and take the right steps to improve women’s safety.

“It is one of many initiatives, and we are working closely with our partners, community groups, and businesses to tackle violence against women and girls.

“No violence or harassment of women is acceptable, we will take it seriously, and together we can make London a safer place for all women.”

How effective can this work be if during a life-anddeath situation there are simply no officers and no response cars that can be dispatched to deal with violent attacks as they happen? And if officers are unable to quickly investigate and catch suspects when they are still in the area, how can they prevent them from going on to attack again?

“Strangulation is a very specific form of violence, and a real red flag for future attacks.

“It’s really clear that there were several incidents across London on Friday night and the police were under-resourced.

“They shouldn’t be in a position to make a decision between attending a stabbing or violent disorder or a woman being strangled.”

Her son is just at the age of thinking about becoming more independent, and going to a nearby shop on his own, but that the ordeal has set him back.

She described the incident as particularly frightening given that there were no warning signs before the attack.

The suspect was not behaving erratically or in a threatening manner before launching the attack.

His victim was eventually told officers would visit three days later, on Monday this week.

She describes the officers who did visit as ‘so lovely and helpful’ and was keen to praise them, but she has been left shaken by how the Met handled her case.

This newspaper contacted the police to find out why a response car was not immediately dispatched.

A Met spokesperson, who did not give an apology, said: “Police were called at 8.59pm on Friday, June 11 to a woman requesting police in Wood Vale SE23.

“A disturbance was heard in the background before the call disconnected.

“An officer spoke with the woman shortly after 9pm and established that she was safe and that the suspect had left the location.

“It was reported that the woman had been

attacked by a male suspect who tried to strangle her and pushed her head against a wall.

“The woman did not require an ambulance. The incident was recorded as an assault.”

Shockingly, it has now emerged that the suspect was able to target three over women on the same stretch of road between Friday and Sunday.

Horrifyingly, one victim was knifed by the attacker.

The woman’s injuries were, fortunately, not life-threatening but there is no update on the seriousness of her condition. Two other female victims were also threatened with knives.

On Monday, June 15, a 53-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and remains in custody while enquiries continue.

Police say she is the only suspect, and are not looking for anyone else in connection with the series of attacks. They believe she was initially mistaken for a man by the first victim.

The Met now faces tough questions about how its pledges to make the streets safer for women can be met if they are unable to respond immediately to an attack that could easily have been far, far worse - and how the perpetrator could have been allowed to attack again.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Police are appealing for witnesses after an ‘altercation’ at a set of traffic lights in Jamaica Road.

Officers say they are keen to ‘ensure the welfare’ of those involved in the incident, which concerned the occupants of a van and a car at around 8.15pm last Saturday night, June 12.

Both vehicles - a black hatchback and white van - were waiting at the lights at the junction with St James's Road when the reported incident took place.

Two people got out the black car, approached the van driver, and an altercation ensued.

Both vehicles then drove away in the direction of Rotherhithe Tunnel.

Any witnesses should call 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Eighteen-year-old Devonte Brown, from Southwark (b. 20.12.02) was charged with conspiracy to murder last Friday evening, June 11.

He appeared in custody at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, June 12.

His arrest follows that of five other men on Wednesday, May 26, four of whom were released on bail until late June.

The fifth male, eighteen-year-old Cameron Deriggs, from Bromley Hill in Lewisham, was charged with conspiracy to murder.

He will appear at the Old Bailey on June 25.

Sasha, a 27-year-old mother, was shot in Consort Road in the early hours of Sunday, May 23. Her condition remains critical.

Man stabbed and five others injured with shotgun pellets

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A man was stabbed and five other people injured by shotgun pellets in a serious incident in Brixton last weekend.

Officers were called to reports of shots fired in Ridgway Road near Loughborough Junction at 1.27am on Sunday, June 13, and found a 32-year-old man with stab injuries at the scene.

He was rushed to hospital and is said to be in a ‘potentially lifethreatening condition’. The victim also had shotgun pellet injuries in his

legs.

Three other men and two women were also treated in hospital with similar pellet injuries over the course of the same night. None are believed to have life-threatening injuries.

Four self-presented at hospital and a fifth was picked up by paramedics from elsewhere in Lambeth at around 3.40am.

A section 60 is in place from 2.30pm today (June 13) covering most of Lambeth.

Officers say enquiries are underway with no one arrested so far.

Police under attack on South Bank

The officers, who had been patrolling Jubilee Gardens, were targeted shortly before 9pm on June 12.

A section 35 dispersal order was put in place and the area was cleared with help from the Territorial Support Group, dog units and National Police Air Service.

In a statement issued on Sunday morning, June 13, the Met said it was ‘not aware’ of any injuries to officers and that one person had been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.

Eight fire engines and 60 firefighters tackled the blaze in Rosendale Road after being called shortly before 2am on Thursday, June 10.

The fire was under control by 4.43am

and, fortunately, did not spread to neighbouring homes.

Residents were warned to keep their windows closed due to the huge amount of smoke.

Station Commander Neil Guyett, who was at the scene, said that no one was in the three-storey house when the ‘severe’ fire broke out.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.

The force’s first priority was its own reputation, according to the independent report on police conduct related to the death of Daniel Morgan, a private investigator who was killed with an axe outside the Golden Lion pub in Sydenham in 1987. No one has ever been brought to justice for Mr Morgan’s death, despite several police inquiries and two charges.

The 1,200-page report found that “the family of Daniel Morgan suffered grievously as a consequence of the failure to bring his family to justice, the unwarranted assurances which they were given, the misinformation which was put into the public domain, and the denial of failings in investigation, including failing to acknowledge professional competence, individuals’ venal behaviour, and managerial and organisational failures.

“The Metropolitan Police also repeatedly failed to take a fresh, thorough and critical look at past failings.

At a public meeting on the cladding and fire safety scandal held last month, Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle told his attendees that new legislation could affect planning proposals to build new homes on towers in the borough.

Any over 18 metres high could potentially be put on hold due to the cost of fitting them with sprinklers and other fire safety measures. However, the council has pledged to continue its rooftop home scheme due to the housing shortage and promised to go above and beyond current legislation to ensure its high rises are safe.

Southwark Council says it has only one active proposal that would see an extension take a block over the height threshold; at Chilton Grove near Surrey Quays.

A spokesperson from the local authority told the News: “This extension was already under construction when the restrictions came into effect which means that there is no requirement to fit sprinklers.

“Nevertheless we will be undertaking a range of fire safety works on all these buildings as part of a package of measures to improve and

Met Police commissioner Cressida Dick apologised to the family of Mr Morgan, “It is a matter of great regret that noone has been brought to justice and that our mistakes have compounded the pain suffered by Daniel’s family,” she said.

“For that I apologise again now.

“I have been personally determined that the Met provided the Panel with the fullest level of co-operation in an open and transparent manner, with complete integrity at all times.”.”

As we reported in May, residents from all 98 flats in Marie Curie house will have to leave their homes for at least a year due to fire safety issues. The work that will be undertaken is similar to improvements made on Lakanal several years ago.

So far the council has provided a Q&A to residents and said it would

work with them on a ‘case by case’ basis to ensure they are offered appropriate housing and they will be offered high priority on bids.

However, details about exactly what type of housing is available for such a huge number of people, and how this will impact the council’s own growing waiting list, are sketchy. There is no indication so far that everyone will be rehomed in the immediate area.

The council has confirmed, however, that residents can expect the same number of bedrooms.

A series of questions submitted by this newspaper to Southwark Council, asking for confirmation about housing stock available, have received no reply for several weeks.

Little Dodson residents protest to stop build

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A group of Southwark residents gathered last week to protest the possible redevelopment of a block of flats on their estate.

Southwark Council has chosen 4956 Dodson Street - known as Little Dodson - and some garages as the site for about eleven new socially rented homes in a four or five-storey block.

The council is still in consultation regarding the site and expects to submit planning permission in autumn this year, according to a newsletter shared with residents.

Building work would start next summer and finish in autumn 2023, if everything goes ahead as planned.

The block currently has eight flats, six of which are lived in by council tenants. One is owned by a leaseholder and the other is empty.

The council’s newsletter says that 50 per cent of the new flats will go to “existing local residents in housing need”.

Meanwhile all six council tenants believe they have a right to return to the new building when work is completed, according to a note by the tenants’ and residents’ association.

Jacquie Gilmartin, who lives in a neighbouring block on the estate, said the building work would be very disruptive for the community.

“I’m so angry. Our neighbours don’t want to move. And we don’t want them to go. So we’ve got to fight for them. By the time they’re allowed to move back they’ll be settled somewhere else. How likely is it they’ll want to come back here?”

“I’ve got severe respiratory disease, so I can’t live where they’re building - it will kill me because I’ve had lung cancer. That’s just another issue on top of everything else going on. You might as well bury me now, with all the dust going on with the building.”

The group is organising a number of different protests in the weeks ahead and has organised a petition to take to the council. “We have to keep fighting - no one else is going to do it for us,” Ms Gimartin said.

Infilling plan has been pushed back

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A planning decision on a controversial new Bermondsey social housing development has been pushed back about three months.

Housing association Leathermarket Community Benefit Society has submitted plans for 32 new homes on the Elim Estate on Long Lane, which would all be socially rented.

Many current residents are concerned that the plans would mean building on the estate’s ballcourt, which they say is an important community resource - one which has proved especially valuable during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Campaigners against the new building have gathered more than 100 signatures for a petition that calls for Leathermarket to withdraw the application.

Leathermarket has said that the new homes would mean they could rehouse families currently living in accommodation that is too small for them. Southwark has 13,000 waiting for affordable housing in the borough and 3,300 in temporary accommodation.

Some Elim Estate residents themselves are in unsuitable housing, including a family with three children living in a bedsit.

The housing association added that it had consulted estate residents about the plans, although campaigners disputed this.

The application was due to be considered at a council planning meeting this Tuesday, June 15. But a planning officer said in an email that the proposal has been “withdrawn” from the meeting and is likely to be reconsidered in September (although no date has been set yet). The council has been contacted for more details on why the application has been shifted back three months.

Campaigners against the proposed new building welcomed the news and called for further consultation with local residents.

The Elim Estate plans are just one example of estate infill proposals in Southwark, which are a key part of the council’s plans to build 11,000 more homes for social rent for 2043. Several vocal campaigns have sprung up in recent months to criticise plans to build on green space or other areas within

estates. Others have welcomed plans to build more social housing in a borough where many people live in cramped and overcrowded housing.

Southwark’s Liberal Democrats added their voices to the criticism recently, announcing a policy to protect and enhance green spaces in the borough, although without many details on what that would entail.

Cllr Hamish McCallum, Lib Dem leader for the borough, said: “Our parks and green spaces are vital for local people’s mental and physical health – that has become all the more apparent over the last year of the pandemic.

“The Liberal Democrats would formally protect and enhance those green spaces, so that all residents can benefit from them.

“We fully support plans to build new council homes, but are concerned that they are being built on scarce green spaces. Labour must urgently review its site selection criteria and should be doing more to buy and develop new sites that are more suited to delivering the homes that local people need.”

Rotherhithe’s China Hall pub to reopen with four flats above it Planning permission granted despite some objections

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The China Hall pub in Rotherhithe will be reopened as a larger building with four flats on the two upper levels, after developers were given planning permission.

The pub, which is an “asset of community value”, has had a difficult recent history and has been closed since 2019. Earlier redevelopment plans were turned down by Southwark Council planners on the grounds that the expanded pub would fit in poorly with the local area.

The later version of plans is now slightly less tall and extends less far to the north, plans show. Officers said in their statement recommending permission be granted that the extension would now be “proportionate to the existing building”.

Several people have objected to the scheme on the council website, arguing that the pub’s beer garden is too close to their own gardens. They said that the noise and smells coming from the beer

garden were likely to disturb them.

Council planners recommended that the beer garden should be closed by 10pm in order to reduce the impact on local people. The environmental team also said that a further noise assessment should be carried out before work starts.

Offshore developers Hamna Wakaf Ltd. have also been told to prove that their kitchen extraction system will mean food smells will not affect their neighbours before they can begin.

Former China Hall landlords Mick and Linda Norris had previously faced the prospect of being turfed out of their home on Christmas Eve 2018, as we reported at the time, when the lease was sold to Hamna Wakaf.

The couple, who had run the China Hall for over thirty-five years, closed their doors in January 2019 after the developer reportedly offered them a lease that was double the amount they were previously paying.

The pair managed to negotiate a brief extension to the lease so as not to be homeless over the festive period, and secured alternative accommodation on Camberwell’s Peabody Estate.

Hamna Wakaf must start building within three years, according to the terms of its planning permission. Three of the flats will have two bedrooms and the fourth will have one bedroom.

The Maudsley Hospital is looking for young volunteers to take part in a study about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Free family fitness event is coming to Burgess Park South Londoners are being encouraged to get out and active in Burgess Park this summer.

Charity Mason Mile, which is sponsored by Sport England, is hosting a free event on Sunday August 1 in the park to help people who may not already be doing regular exercise understand how getting fit can be enjoyable. The event was originally planned for July 11, but the delayed easing of Covid-19 restrictions meant it had to be pushed back.

The family day includes fun workouts, scavenger hunts for kids,

interactive nature miles where people can learn about flora and fauna while exercising, and health and wellbeing information services.

The event will also include other games for kids and a competition to create the best mascot. ‘Mascot design packs’ will be available on the day for children to get creative. The winner will get a chance to work with a professional designer to finalise the concept.

Join the Mayor: put your face on Tower Bridge London Mayor Sadiq Khan helped unveil an enormous patchwork of images of 'London's community heroes' on Tower Bridge this weekend - including a picture of his own face.

The display, launched on Sunday, June 13, was part of the wider celebrations for the start of Euro 2020. London is hosting eight games, including the semi-finals and the final. The first match in Wembley Stadium took place on Sunday, with England emerging as 1-0 victors over Croatia.

The artwork contains more than 3,000 images and is longer than two football pitches.

The exhibition, by artist JR, will move onto several other locations around London over the next month, including Granary Square

Hall, the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in Tottenham and the Royal Docks.

People working or living close by to the locations will be invited in advance to have their photo taken as part of the project.

JR called the work "a beautiful moment of reopening" after the Covid-19 lockdowns. He added that the work "will allow any person in London to express a visual statement with their portrait."

Mr Khan added: "Five locations across our capital will be transformed into spectacular open exhibition spaces in a celebration of our diversity and the incredible efforts of our community heroes over the last year. It will show the power of football to bring people together and will be another great reason for Londoners and visitors to safely enjoy our capital this summer.”

Staff at the south London hospital are part of a team looking to develop an app that will give people with PTSD therapy, with the aim to be just as effective as face-t0-face treatment.

The app was developed before Covid-19 hit, with many young people already on long waiting lists for treatment for mental health problems even before the pandemic.

The aim is to cut waiting times for people who need therapy and make treatment more convenient and accessible for youngsters.

Young people between the ages of 12-17 are being invited to come forward. The study will take place in south London, Cambridge, East Anglia and Oxford, but people from all over England can refer themselves.

Dr Patrick Smith, a consultant psychologist at the Maudsley Hospital's child and adolescent trauma anxiety and depression

clinic, was part of the team that developed the app.

“The new app was designed with input from young people and includes all the components of the face-toface therapy which evidence shows does help young patients recover.," he said. "The app and website are personalised to respond to the particular needs and circumstances of the young person using them.

A named therapist calls the young person at least once a week over the course of the 12 week programme to provide help and support.”

Dr Smith, who is also research director for the King’s College Hospital doctorate in clinical psychology, added: “It is important that PTSD symptoms are addressed during adolescence as this is a time when young people are developing skills essential to building and maintaining friendships and relationships; as well as facing exams that will have a significant impact on their opportunities and choices in life.”

Researchers from King's College London, Oxford University, Cambridge University and the University of East Anglia also helped develop the app.

Work starts on 50 new council homes in Borough, including terraced houses New residents and councillors were among the people who gathered for an event to celebrate a new block of council flats in Borough reaching its highest point last week.

Joseph Lancaster will provide 40 new council homes. Some 34 will be flats in the new block, while another six will be terraced houses next door.

Building work is set to finish early next year. The development, led by housing association Leathermarket, will also include communal gardens and play spaces.

21st century Macbeth coming to Peckham A new version of Macbeth transported to the 21st century is coming to a theatre in Peckham this summer.

Director Ben May has been rehearsing online with actors from the non-professional Play On company since November for the opening performance on Tuesday June 22.

“Never has there been a better time to bring this play to an audience that has been challenged by events beyond their control," he said.

"With so many lives lost, social inequality widening, civil liberties curtailed and governments called to account, Macbeth’s gripping

narrative asks us to look at ourselves and question whether power would corrupt us if we were in charge?”

The version being put on in Theatre Peckham has been adapted by Mr May's wife, the novelist Sarah May. The play reimagines Macbeth, originally set in medieval Scotland, as a 21st century story told through the eyes of a child waking up in hospital.

This production is part of Play On's Project Macbeth initiative to engage emerging actors, teachers, and schoolchildren with Shakespeare.

Suzanne McLean, CEO and artistic director of Theatre Peckham, added: “In a year of unprecedented disruption

due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Play On Shakespeare have stayed dedicated to inspiring, engaging and connecting young people to theatre. I am a huge supporter of their work. A series of special donation sessions are taking place on World Sickle Cell Awareness Day on Saturday, June 19, and Father’s Day on Sunday in five blood donor centres across London.

Black donors are in particular demand because they are ten times more likely to have Ro, the blood type needed to help people with sickle cell disease complications.

The genetic illness, most prevalent in people with black African heritage, is treated with regular blood transfusions.

There are 15,000 existing patients with the disease in the UK, and three hundred babies are born with it every year. Each donor can save up to three lives with one donation.

The sessions are part of a nationwide appeal by United by Blood, a coalition comprising social organisations African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT), Black Mums Upfront and Cell Fe For Life supported by NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), in memory of Evan Nathan Smith - a young black

man who had sickle cell disease and died following a sickle cell crisis.

The appeal is designed to encourage more black people to register and become regular blood donors in Evan Nathan’s memory.

Colin Anderson, community and engagement lead at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “It is vital that Black people understand the growing need from within our own community for ethnically matched blood and that they feel comfortable coming to donate.

“Sickle cell is the most common and fastest growing genetic disorder in the UK that mainly affects black people, and many patients rely on regular blood transfusions to help treat and prevent the painful symptoms and complications.

“These patients require blood that is more closely matched, and this is most likely to come from a donor of the same ethnicity.

“There is a rise in black people donating blood, but we urgently need more to become regular donors.”

Comment I have dived into my role at City Hall

was greatly honoured to be elected as the new London Assembly Member for Lambeth and Southwark.

I have dived into my role at City Hall, engaging with community groups across the constituency and attending police and crime, oversight and fire and resilience committee meetings.

I am also the Labour Group lead on the economy committee which meets for the first time next month.

I asked my first questions to Sadiq Khan at Mayor’s Question Time, this time about how he plans to address London’s growing unemployment rate coming out of the pandemic.

As of April, over 20,000 people in our borough were recorded as claiming Universal Credit as they are on low-incomes, have lost their jobs or are unable to work. That’s almost 1 in 10 Southwark residents. I have received assurances from the mayor that City Hall will play its part through investment in adult education to create a new generation of high-skilled, green jobs. This has to be the foundation of London’s economic recovery.

GLA Member for Southwark & Lambeth One of the other key issues I am determined to address on the London Assembly is child poverty. We recently saw figures released by End Child Poverty, showing that over twofifths (43%) of Southwark’s children are living below the breadline.

This is shameful in the capital of one of the wealthiest countries in the world and we can’t allow child poverty to become the new normal in our community.

We have seen the mayor take action to lift young Londoners out of deprivation and social exclusion through City Hall’s £45m Young Londoners Fund, food insecurity strategies and support for voluntary organisations during the pandemic.

However, we now need to see urgent action taken by Government to address the underlying issues at a much more granular level.

Ministers have their hands on the levers of power to repair the holes that have poked through our safety net, after a decade of austerity.

Now more than ever, we need a stronger welfare system by abolishing the two-child benefit limit, making the weekly £20 uplift in Universal Credit payments permanent and scrapping the initial five-week waiting period.

We know that exorbitant housing costs are a particular driver of child poverty in London. Building the next generation of social housing in our capital is the long-term solution and I am glad to see that the mayor has been prioritising this.

In the meantime, the government can do more to help by raising the Local Housing Allowance to cover average rents and introducing a fund to help tenants who have fallen behind on their rents during the pandemic.

Finally, I would remind everyone to stay safe and vigilant as we face a third wave of COVID-19. Whilst restrictions have eased, cases are rising in Southwark, so we still need to protect each other by following the rules and getting both doses of the vaccine when invited.

Council homes - but not at the expense of vital green spaces Hamish McCallum Southwark Liberal Democrat opposition leader

ike many local residents, I have been making far more use of local parks and green spaces over the last year.

As I look around the borough, it is clear that our green spaces are a lifeline especially for those without private gardens and for families looking for space to play and exercise outdoors.

But, with only 300 recognised parks and green spaces, Southwark has limited areas available for its 320,000 residents.

In fact, Friends of the Earth last year ranked Southwark as one of the worst local authorities in the country for residents’ access to green spaces within a five minutes’ walk of people’s homes.

Green spaces are not just a niceto-have, they are essential for our health and wellbeing. In fact, they deliver significant savings to the NHS, with a 2020 London Green Spaces Commission report estimating that green spaces save London £950m per year in avoided health costs. A recent study in Denmark also found that children who grew up with the lowest levels of green space had up to 55% higher risk of developing a psychiatric disorder.

Our local environment also benefits enormously, with urban

temperatures reducing by up to 2°C during heat waves where there are green spaces. Even crime levels have been found to decrease in areas with increased local greening.

That is why the Southwark Liberal Democrats have announced a new policy to formally protect green spaces in the borough from development.

This includes spaces on existing estates, many of which were created as part of the amenity provision when the estates where built. We will enhance these areas for the use of local residents and will invest more in improving our parks and green spaces across the borough.

Our policy announcement follows recent resident-led campaigns to resist housing development planned by the Labour-led Southwark Council on Jocelyn Street Park (aka the ‘Flaxyard Site’) and elsewhere in the borough which would see the loss of parks, green spaces and play spaces on estates.

Local residents will be concerned that last week the Labour Cabinet Member for Housing refused to rule out development on green spaces, parks and community amenities, stating in an open letter that Southwark would explore “all the sites available to us”.

Instead, we believe that the Council should do more to buy and develop

new sites that are better suited to delivering the numbers of homes that local people need. We fully support building new council homes, but those homes should not be at the expense of scarce and vital green spaces.

Such an approach would also accelerate Southwark’s long-awaited council house building programme, which latest figures show is still lingering at just 698 completions.

Yet, since 2010, the Labour-led Southwark Council has sold or demolished over 3,000 council homes and allowed over 7,000 homes to lie empty, including a number of council properties such as Maydew House by Southwark Park which has been empty for nearly a decade.

All the while, the housing waiting list has grown to 15,000.

Southwark needs bold and ambitious action to deliver the homes that local people need. We need council housing developments in the right location and of the necessary scale, and we need to take urgent action to get empty homes back into use.

Only then, can we build the future communities of Southwark — which must include the parks, green spaces and play areas which will make those communities happier, healthier and safer for years to come.

I am not competent to argue with Art-Invest Real Estate about the future demand for more flexible office working. But I can recognise a pile of architectural trash when I see it, such as the proposal you show (10 June) for the side of Canada Water where the old Decathlon "shed" now is.

I would urge readers to look at the plans online at canadawaterdockside. co.uk. Perhaps together we can shout down this monstrosity.

Without resources, police promises ring hollow

T

he Met faces serious questions over its handling of a series of attacks on women in East Dulwich - questions that throw into sharp relief the limitations of its pledge to make the streets safe for women.

In the paper this week, we hear from a woman who was attacked out of nowhere by a stranger.

She told us the suspect attempted to smash her head against a wall and strangle her in front of her ten-year-old son.

She had no idea whether she could escape - and it is not a stretch to imagine that had the perpetrator not released her when they did she could have suffered greater injuries - or even worse.

By failing immediately to race to the scene police missed their chance to catch the person responsible.

Over the coming days more women were attacked, including one who sustained a knife injury.

It would appear to be pure chance that none were critically injured - or killed.

In the weeks after the disappearance of Sarah Everard, trust between women and the police seemed to reach an all time low.

Street harassment is epidemic in London and other cities, and rape convictions are at a record low in England.

Predictions of a surge in violent crime post-lockdown also have come to pass.

A combination of warm weather - violence always peaks in the summer months - restrictions being eased and postcode tensions has led to a spate of murders and other violent attacks.

Women can be both the target, or caught in the crossfire.

It is too early to say what motive led to one suspect allegedly being responsible for four separate attacks over a period of three days, all targeting women; if there is a clear motive at all.

Regardless of whether an attack is sexually motivated, linked to a robbery, a random encounter with someone suffering from mental health difficulties, or a targeted attack, the crucial moments for evidence gathering or catching those responsible are in the minutes and hours afterwards. In this case, the perpetrator was said to have loitered in the area for some time after.

Until they have the resources to answer urgent 999 calls for assistance, in life-or-death situations, any police promises about making our streets safer will ring hollow.

Anyone who lives in and around the Elephant & Castle would have seen Natty Bo promenading about Walworth with his unique and distinctive style, writes Michael Holland.

Many will have watched him DJing some of the best rare Reggae and Ska music ever produced, and I have seen him perform with one of the many bands that he fronts, but I am amazed once again now I find that Natty is also a fantastic artist.

I arranged to meet him at the venue of his next exhibition in Pullens Yards. I sat with a latté outside Electric Elephant Café awaiting his arrival, and he did not disappoint. Natty Bo entered the yards at the far end so I got the full effect of his big entrance. He strode down the centre of the cobblestones, backlit by the morning sun, a vision in a pastel suit, two-tone brogues, a hat tilted to the perfect angle, and just the right amount of jewellery to not cross over into bling. This moment needed a Peaky Blinders slo-mo sequence.

Everything about Natty is fastidiously chosen for his cultivated look. His opening form of greeting was an infectious smile that includes a rather wonderful gold tooth that attracts the eye. I could see my reflection in it.

But let’s not think that Natty Bo is all style and no substance, because he walks the walks too - he just doesn’t brag about it. For this interview, however, I needed to know all the details. And let me tell you, there are bragging rights galore in his life of hard work and creativity.

Natty began life in Hackney before moving south of the river to Thamesmead, then Brixton, and ultimately the Elephant.

“I was drawing all the time as a child,” he says. “Painting was my escape at school.”

At weekends he attended Wilsons Annex for extra painting classes, which motivated him to apply to art school.

Having been accepted by the prestigious Chelsea School of Art, Natty studied sculpture, photography, print-making, 3D design, painting, drawing, and Art History

for his Diploma, before completing a degree in Fine Art. But living through years of study does not come for free so the versatile Natty went out busking: “I was singing and playing blues harp,” he recalls.

It was music that first brought Natty Bo to my attention, so I asked him about it: “I had always collected records,” he begins. “Blues, Ska, Rock Steady, Reggae, Latin, Swing, Funk, and, of course, James Brown… I DJed at Gaz’s Rockin Blues in Soho(a legendary one-nighter club), and joined The Trojans (a Celtic-Ska band)…

Plus, I had a few crazy bands in the 80s.”

He ran off a list of names, including Ska Cubano “who became world renown ’til 2014”, The Top Cats, “still running after

25 years”, and Natty Congeroo and the Flames of Rhythm, “my 30s, 40s Swing & Blues band that plays regularly to Swing dancers”, he explains.

My brain was dancing now and when he spoke of Yiddish Twist, Cumbia Mambo, and Calypso Jive I felt a need to sit down, although I was already seated. I directed Natty back to his art exhibition.

“I use all mediums,” he said. “Oil, watercolour, charcoal, pastel, ink, coffee, tea, pencil, emulsion, found objects, wax, clay, wood, Polyfilla, old paper…” My head was spinning again.

Do you have favourite subjects? “People, dancers, performers, buildings at night, derelict factories, dreams, film noir, nudes, Harlem, Jazz scenes, Windrush,

decay, abstractions…” Natty loves a list but I was beginning to feel listless. I could only dream of having his energy.

What can visitors expect to see at the exhibition? “A various array of styles, from Figurative, Impressionistic, Surrealistic and Abstract paintings; mixed media sketches, sculpture, collages …” I stopped him there.

Is there a theme? “Rhythm v Construction…

There are some nightscapes around Pullens Estate; I tend to omit the cars and study the artificial light and atmosphere… I’m moving towards a dramatic mood change from the mundane to the exciting.”

Having a sneak preview of the artwork I could now understand what he was

trying to describe. I could now see the beauty and the complexity of his art that provides something for everyone. He is not a Jack, but a Master of all Trades.

He has artistry in many forms, and I left having even more admiration of the man I had already admired for some time.

He is a Sapeur, an Artist, a Peacock. He is Natty Bo, and once seen he is never forgotten.

Amélie brings Amour to Paris and the West End

The beautiful Criterion Theatre reopens with Amélie the Musical telling the story of a young French girl who grew up terrorised by a not very nice mother in an eccentric household where she was not allowed out and the pet goldfish was suicidal, writes Michael Holland.

After the mother dies in tragic but hilarious circumstances, Amélie leaves home, leaving her father idolising the gnome shrine that he built to house the dead wife’s ashes, ‘Because she hated that gnome’.

In Paris, she finds work as a waitress in a Montmartre café frequented by the usual crew of misfits drinking pastis and cognac, and to make up for her sad and sheltered life Amélie begins small, but secret, acts of kindness. She sees the joy when her work brings people together, so makes it her life’s mission.

Before long she has reunited families and lovers, opened doors to dreams, and generally put smiles on many people’s faces, and none more than us in the auditorium. And, of course, she finds what has been missing from her own life - love. It wouldn’t be a West End musical without it.

The set is quite fantastic with pianos that turn into a well-stocked bar, a vegetable stall, and a sex shop, as well as provide music throughout - a pumping playlist of songs that traverse French Jazz, street accordionist, pop, and traditional musical theatre. One highlight being a looky-likey going full-on Elton John for an imaginary funeral scene.

The band is actually the cast who fill up the small stage with their drums, flutes, guitars, cellos, double bass, and violins as they dance and move around; many times at such close quarters I thought those energetic elbows and flying bows would

take an eye out.

There is some excellent puppetry work and Amélie brilliantly accesses her apartment like Mary Poppins. What’s not to like?

Amélie the Musical is comic, fun, poignant, surreal… It helps if you have seen the 2001 film because unless you catch every lyric and understand every word of the cod-French, you might struggle with what is going on in Amélie’s quest for happiness. Even so, the music and Audrey Brisson in the title role will ensure an enjoyable time.

Who or what else deserves a blue plaque besides phyllis, austin and 48 others?

Southwark residents are being urged to nominate historical people, events and places of note in the borough to be given blue plaques before the annual deadline arrives at the end of this month.

Southwark Heritage Association (SHA), which runs the programme in the borough, has put up 50 blue plaques commemorating people with local connections and Southwark institutions that are particularly worth knowing about since 2002.

The News is another of the programme’s founders, alongside Southwark Council. The scheme first came as a way of getting round the strict criteria put in place by English Heritage - which runs the national programme that a building must be standing and a person dead to qualify.

The next round are due to be decided later this year, but SHA relies on the people of Southwark to first say who or what they think should be honoured.

After nominations have been vetted, a shortlist will be drawn up for people in the borough to vote on.

Here we run through some of the people who have already been given blue plaques. The borough has commemorated people as famous as Charles Dickens, Charlie Chaplin and Michael Caine. Here are two of the lesser-known examples.

Austin Osman Spare (1886-1956) - Southwark Heritage Centre

Austin Osman Spare (1886-1956) Austin Osman Spare was an artist, writer and occultist who had “a lifelong connection with the borough of Southwark”, according to historian Benjamin Angwin.

Spare was a maverick who was associated with the symbolist and

art nouveau movements of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but who also stood apart from them.

He was born north of the river but moved to Kennington as a child. He left school aged 13 to become an apprentice to a stained glass maker. He showed such talent as a young painter that he was recommended for a scholarship to the Royal College of Art. He became the youngest person to have an exhibition at the Royal Academy and also exhibited his work in the Newington Public on Walworth Road in 1904.

But Spare soon grew disillusioned with the teaching methods at the Royal College and dropped out. He began to focus on his own method, which relied on accessing the subconscious, producing strange and disturbing images. He also wrote and illustrated a book called the Book of Pleasure (SelfLove).

When war broke out Spare became an artist for the army. After the war, he had little mainstream success. He became homeless for a time during the blitz. He was rehoused but remained in poverty.

He continued to exhibit his work, including in Southwark pubs. Spare also produced a series of pastel drawings of Southwark residents. He died in 1956 aged 69.

Spare Street off Walworth Road was named in his honour in 2016.

Phyllis Pearsall (1906-1996) Born in East Dulwich, Phyllis Pearsall invented the A-Z map.

A budding portrait painter from a well-off family, in 1935 she couldn’t find her way to a party in Belgravia - so decided to make a completely new map

She achieved this by getting up at 5am every day and walking every one of London’s 23,000 streets, a total distance of 3,000 miles. The result was the A-Z, which she claimed was the first indexed street map of London, although a competitor, Bartholomew’s Reference Atlas, had been available for nearly 30 years.

Pearsall printed off 10,000 copies of her map and tried to get them sold in several top London bookshops, including Foyles, Hatchards and Selfridges. She was finally successful with W.H. Smith, to which she reportedly delivered the order in a hand barrow.

She formed a company, the Geographers’ A-Z Map Co., which went from strength to strength. She retired in her later years to West Sussex but remained involved with the company.

She died of cancer in 1996 aged 89.

Her blue plaque was unveiled at her home in Court Lane Garden, Dulwich, on October 12, 2014.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that on 17 June 2021 it has made the above experimental orders under sections 9 and 10 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

2. The effects of the experimental Orders, the intention of which is to trial new parking measures in the Dulwich Village area, will be:(a) to add the provision for the additional arrangement of ‘stop and shop’ parking places to the London Borough of Southwark (Charged-For Parking Places) (Map-based) Order 2021, in which either (i) vehicles may be left free of charge for up to 1 hour, or (ii) vehicles which have paid the parking charge may be left up to the maximum stay indicated on the traffic sign in relation to that parking place, the first hour of which parking session would be free of charge; provided no vehicle may return to a parking place within the period indicated on the traffic sign in relation to that parking place, between the operating hours indicated on the traffic sign in relation to that parking place; (b) in DULWICH VILLAGE on the north-east side between its junctions with Calton Avenue and Gilkes Place existing ‘short stay’ parking places which are lined so as vehicles stand at an angle of 60° to the kerb-line, are converted to provide (i) a new ‘unlimited stay’ disabled persons’ parking place to operate ‘at any time’ and may be used without time limit by vehicles displaying a valid disabled persons 'blue badge' o/s No. 35 Dulwich Village; and (ii) 14 new ‘stop and shop’ parking places in which vehicles may either be left free of charge for up to 1 hour, or vehicles which have paid the parking charge may be left for up to 3 hours, the first hour of which parking session would be free of charge; provided no vehicle may return to a parking place within 2 hours (between Monday to Saturday 8.30 am - 6.30 pm) NOTE: a parking session must be registered with the Council’s ‘Pay by Phone’ provider to obtain the 1 hour free of charge parking in addition to a longer charged-for stay. The ‘Pay by Phone’ provider will calculate the total parking charge for the parking session payable automatically upon registering.

(TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)

1. Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that on 17 June 2021 it has made the above experimental order under sections 9 and 10 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 .

2. The effects of the experimental Order, the intention of which is to provide additional parking places in Controlled Parking Zone ‘ED’ in the East Dulwich area, as part of the London Streetspace Programme and to complement the low-traffic neighbourhood measures in Dulwich, will be:(a) to introduce ‘pay’ parking places in which vehicles are permitted park during Mon-Sat 8.30 am to 6.30 pm (max stay 2hrs, no return within 2hrs) where the parking charge has been paid, in:(i) DERWENT GROVE north-east side o/s No. 1 (6m), (ii) ELSIE ROAD north-east side south of its junction with Grove Vale (6m), (iii) GROVE VALE south side opp. Nos. 73 to 79 (19m), and (iv) MELBOURNE GROVE south-east side o/s No. 1c (10m) and north-west side o/s Melbourne Terrace (15m); and (b) to introduce ‘shared-use’ parking places in which holders of a valid CPZ ‘ED’ permit or where the parking charge has been paid, are permitted to park during Mon-Fri 8.30 am to 6.30 pm (max stay 2hrs, no return within 2hrs) in:(i) DERWENT GROVE south-west side o/s Nos. 2 to 4 (6m), and (ii) ELSIE ROAD south-west side south of its junction with Grove Vale (6m). note: All measurements are in metres ‘m’ and are approximate. Parking charges are listed on www.southwark.gov.uk/parking

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable sewer works, and a crane operation to be carried out, it intends, to make an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

2.

Whilst the works are in progress, or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in: (a) Shad Thames, between Queen Elizabeth Street and Gainsford Street (b) Hillsboro Road, between No’s 13 and East Dulwich Grove.

The alternative route for affected traffic (2a) Gainsford Street, Queen Elizabeth Street, Curlew Street. (2b) Thorncombe Road, Tarbert Road, Glengarry Road, East Dulwich Grove.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

By Mark Baldwin sport@southwarknews.co.uk JASON ROY says Surrey are “extremely happy” after their flying start to the Vitality Blast continued with a five-wicket win against outgunned Glamorgan at the Kia Oval on Monday.

Roy smashed three sixes and eight fours in a 35-ball 64 as Surrey made it three consecutive wins.

Marnus Labuschagne earlier hit 74 from 51 balls and Nick Selman’s 28-ball 43 featured three sixes but Glamorgan’s 166 for 8 was never going to be enough once Roy had thrillingly assaulted the Welsh county’s spinners in the opening overs.

Last-gasp Dulwich grab dramatic win

Surrey, last year’s beaten Blast finalists, have now won their first three South Group matches and a 4,000 crowd – the maximum allowed under government restrictions – lapped it up as Roy plundered 18 from the second over, bowled by off spinner Andrew Salter, with four fours either dismissively lofted straight or fired through the covers.

Dulwich 176-9 (49.1) beat Oxted & Limpsfield 175-8 (50) by 1 wicket

By John Lewis sport@southwarknews.co.uk IN A nail-biting finish last weekend, Dulwich’s last wicket pair squeezed out victory in the last over against Oxted & Limpsfield in Division 2 of the AJ Fordham Surrey Championship.

With both their regular opening bowlers unavailable, Dulwich gave debuts to Hugo Peterson and Felix Allocca, and they soon found themselves in action when Oxted won the toss and elected to bat. Allocca struck in his second over, and Peterson was unlucky not to join him.

and Jamie Overton had fallen to spin, to see Surrey home with 10 balls to spare.

Labuschagne got off the mark with a pulled four off Sam Curran and the only false shot in a superb innings, before he skied Jordan Clark to cover in the final over, was an inside-edged four off Clark in the 12th over as he began to look to accelerate the scoring.

Perhaps the stroke of the night - despite Roy’s pyrotechnics - was Labuschagne’s sole six, pummeled over long on off Clark from down on one knee in the 18th over and there were eight fours too from the Australian.

Kiran Carlson also provided impetus with a 13-ball 23, including a sweetly-struck six off Sam Curran over square leg, before being run out by Tom Curran’s direct hit from third man trying to complete a second run.

David Lloyd fell for 10 in the fifth over, The Oxted second wicket pair of Joe Murtagh and Harvey Cutmore gradually increased the tempo, and had taken the score to 99 after 25 overs with a substantial total looking likely. But the spinners had started to impose some restraint, and Ahmed Khan broke the stand in the next over, having Cutmore caught at slip for 39.

Frankie Brown now entered the attack, and bowled a miserly spell of ten overs in which he took the next three wickets and conceded just 15 runs. Only 33 runs had come from sixteen overs as Oxted declined to 132-5 after 41. The sixth wicket pair took the score to 150 in the 47th over before Peterson returned to remove Murtagh, whose dogged innings of 72 had taken 124 balls.

Surrey opener Roy said: “We are extremely happy with our three performances so far, and the wins of course, and it’s a pretty good feeling still to have things to work on. It’s ideal really to have stuff to improve, whether that’s in the field or being more hungry with the bat.

“But we were outstanding again tonight with the ball, we were very clinical in making them hit to where we wanted them ten overs, while Khan had 1-33 off his ten. Dulwich could be well pleased to have kept their opponents down to 76 runs in the last 25 overs, and set up the chance of victory.

Acting skipper Chris Purshouse opened the batting, but lost Ollie Steele for 9 and Brown for 8 to make it 37-2 after twelve overs.

Purshouse and Paul Selvey-Clinton then added 56 in twelve overs for the third wicket, but were both dismissed by Murtagh, with Purshouse making 38 off 63 balls and Selvey-Clinton 34 off 48.

Will Bancroft then fell for three to reduce Dulwich to 118-5 in the 33rd over. This brought in keeper Michael Harms, who kept the score moving while wickets fell at the other end. Matt Marfani went for seventeen with the score on 129, Khan for three at 143, and Peterson was run out for a single to make

Ex-skipper on giving it all – and fighting against Palace move

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FORMER MILLWALL captain Tony Craig revealed he turned down three offers from Crystal Palace as he fought against a move across south London early in his career – but says he has no regrets in football.

Craig, 36, played 322 times for Millwall over four spells and is currently at League Two Crawley Town.

The defender won two promotions to the Championship with the Lions and became renowned as a wholehearted player who got the most out of his career.

In an interview on Millwall’s podcast, Wall Talk, Craig said he couldn’t understand why players with more ability than him didn’t work harder.

“It’s well known at this club what type of player you’ve got to be,” Craig said.

“You’ve got to be a player that gives it their all, don’t jump out of tackles because you don’t survive here.

“People here aren’t shy in coming forward.

“There were numerous players here with unbelievable ability I could only have dreamt of but they don’t survive here.

“I knew my strengths and I knew my weaknesses. Of course I tried to rectify them and improve but I knew what I was capable of doing.

“That was running up and down

the line, putting crosses in, but more importantly I knew I could tackle and I knew I could defend.

“Sometimes I look back and think could I have done this or that, but for me personally, I’ve got no regrets in my career because I know I gave my all dayin, day-out.

“Of course I would have loved to have that extra ability, that extra yard of pace and more quality on the ball because you never know. Unfortunately I didn’t have it.

“There have been loads of players who came here with unbelievable talent but they just didn’t give it their all. They must look back with regret. I don’t. What an opportunity they had for a career and they just let it go.”

Craig left Millwall for the first time in 2007, and he explained how little the move to rivals Palace appealed to him.

“It was a very, very difficult time,” he said. “I had a phone call from my agent saying Crystal Palace are interested.

You’re thinking, ‘what’s happening here?’

“All of a sudden [Lions boss] Willie Donachie called me up, and Willie Donachie never called you up. He goes, ‘Tone, we’ve accepted an offer from Crystal Palace’. I said, ‘Willie, I don’t want to go. You know what this club means to me, and the rivalry, if I go over there what it could do to me.’

“He goes, ‘we got an offer we can’t refuse, I’ve got another player I want to

bring in and I want to sacrifice you to get this player in’.

“He said he’d give me 24 hours to think about it, but I said I didn’t want to go. I said, ‘Will, call me up in 24 hours, my mind will not change. I can assure you of that.’

“I was still living at home at this point.

I‘m going downstairs telling me mum and dad they’d accepted an offer from Crystal Palace. My parents said whatever decision I made they’d stick with me.

“Twenty hours passed and he’s called me. ‘Tony, the offer, what are you thinking?’ I said: ‘I’m not going. I don’t want to go, I‘m not sure if it’s worth the hassle. Tell them thanks for the offer but the move’s not for me.’

“He said, ‘the money we get for you, I want to sign Ryan Smith [from Derby].

It’s done. It’s completed. We need the funds in, so you’ve got to go.’

“I told him if I didn’t agree terms then the move doesn’t happen. I remember he put the phone down and I didn’t ring him back. The next morning he rang me back saying he was putting his foot down. He was selling the club to me, saying it was the perfect opportunity to move up to the Championship.

“A couple of days later I‘m meeting [Crystal Palace manager] Peter Taylor for the first time. I turned down three offers from them but when the fourth came in you’ve got Willie on the phone, the board on the phone saying we need the money.

“Unfortunately the move materialised and I had to move on. The number was in my head and Crystal Palace got to that number.

The Dutch international, Jenny Gunn and late hero Beth Langston all hit fifties to secure a second win in four games with only four balls to spare. Langston hit the winning runs and finished 59 not out off 53.

The Diamonds lost four wickets for twelve as they slipped from 58 for one in the eleventh over.

Earlier, White’s fifteenth career halfcentury in List A cricket advanced the Stars.

She was supported by a series of valuable contributions, including Aylish Cranstone’s 42 not out.

White set the platform before Cranstone gave the innings late impetus with half a dozen boundaries in 31 balls.

The Diamonds dropped three catches of varying difficulty in good batting conditions. The pitch was true and the outfield fast.

Taylor was responsible for the first in the second over of the match when Alice Davidson-Richards edged Phoebe Graham behind on one.

Taylor, a replacement signing for England’s Lauren Winfield-Hill and injured Bess Heath, went to her right one-handed and could only parry a chance which would have been classed as a stunner.

Gunn struck twice for the Diamonds, but White harnessed power and invention to put Stars in a commanding position.

That position was significantly

strengthened inside 14 overs of the chase as the Diamonds slipped to 65 for four, bringing Taylor in as she prepares for the Hundred.

England seamer Freya Davies had home captain Hollie Armitage caught behind and Grace Gibbs trapped Rachel Hopkins lbw and had Alex MacDonald caught at cover.

And Taylor only lasted five balls as she was bowled off an under-edge pulling at Dani Gregory’s off-spin - 70 for five in the sixteenth over.

Like Gibbs, it was the leg-spinner’s second wicket.

Gunn and Kalis confidently rebuilt in a 90 stand, both reaching 50 before Gunn fell to Bryony Smith at 160 for six after 36 overs.

“I did feel pushed out, there were no other options because no other team came in for me.”

Craig also explained his approach to games.

“It’s pure adrenaline, you don’t want to be the one that f**ks up,” he said. “I’ve always had my adrenaline pumping because if I don’t I‘m a poor player.

“I have to eff and shout. Sometimes I even speak rubbish just to get that adrenaline and blood pumping. I know when I‘m on it’s when I have this little vein popping up in my head here.

“If I lose a game I look at it as they’ve taken something off me. My main incentive is to give my wife and kids the best life I can possibly give.

“When I cross that white line I have no mates in football.”

Surrey’s Stars denied after thrilling Diamonds chase

The meeting of the two title hopefuls saw England legend Sarah Taylor keep tidily after nearly two years in retirement before making two off five balls.

Kirstie White’s 73 off 90 underpinned the Stars’ 250 for six before the Diamonds recovered from 70 for five thanks largely to 75 off 106 for Sterre

Kalis took the target to 44 off six overs before being run out from deep midwicket - 209 for seven in the 45th over.

Langston, however, held her nerve to seal a nail-biting success.

South East Stars batter White said: “It’s a hard one to take - we’re disappointed.

When we finished our innings, we were comfortable with 250 because the pitch was tough to score on at stages.

“But I don’t think we nailed the basics, really.

“Credit where it’s due. They built partnerships and chased really well.

Sterre and Jenny batted well in the middle for them.

“But we just weren’t up to scratch in the field today.”

Twenty current England players have EFL experience – as rumours surround Millwall youngster EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT believes the current England squad shows how EFL experience benefited players – as speculation surrounds one of Millwall’s most talented youngsters.

Abdul Abdulmalik, 18, was offered a new contract after the end of the season but he has been linked with a move away from the club.

Millwall have rejected an offer from Championship rivals Swansea, and there is also interest from the Premier League.

It’s not the first time the south London club have been in this positon, though with younger players involved. Darko

Gyabi in 2018 and Samuel Edozie a year later both joined Manchester City as fourteen-year-olds with both deals worth well over £1million when add-ons are included.

The Lions would be entitled to compensation set by a tribunal were Abdulmalik to move on.

Abdulmalik has yet to make a firstteam appearance for Millwall but he has caught the eye in the underage ranks.

He was part of a Lions side that reached the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup in 2020 before a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea, and he has also represented England under17s.

Three of England’s starters in their 1-0 Euro 2020 win over Croatia last Sunday – Tyrone Mings, Kalvin Phillips and Mason Mount – have played in the Championship in the last few seasons.

Gareth Southgate first called up Leeds’ Phillips before he had played in the Premier League, and the England squad is packed with players who either started their careers in the Championship or moved to EFL clubs on loan to gain firstteam experience.

In fact, of Southgate’s 26-man squad at this summer’s tournament, only six players – Declan Rice, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Phil Foden and Bukayo Sako – have never played in the EFL. Captain Harry Kane went on loan to Millwall in 2012 and explained how important his spell at The Den was for his career.

“My loan at Millwall was a big part of my development,” Kane said before the Lions’ FA Cup quarter-final against Tottenham at White Hart Lane in 2017.

“All I said to him is we want to make sure we build momentum for him this season.

“We’ll decide within pre-season whether he stays with us and has a chance of making an impact in our team with an opportunity for him to try to do that.

“If we don’t feel that’s the right thing to do for him at the minute then we’ll try to get him out [on loan] into the League. We’ll get him another season where he has a chance to continue to score goals.

“Either way, we see him as a Millwall firstteam player. It’s about what the quickest route is for him to get there.

“If you look at someone like Danny McNamara there are different ways of doing it, he took about three or four loans.

Tanto’s already had two or three loans.

“It’s hard to be specific but I’ve had a good conversation with him and we’re all on board with the plan for him next season.”

Alex Mitchell also enjoyed a successful loan spell in National League last season

with Bromley, who got into the play-offs on the last day but lost to Hartlepool United in the quarter-finals.

Mitchell is highly regarded at Millwall and a decision will also be made on his immediate future.

Rowett added: “I’ve not spoken to Alex because he went out on loan quite late and the plan for him was always just to go out and get some good experience to bring that back to the club to see if that can move him forward.

“It’s less of a conversation that needs to be had because he’s only 18. We think he’s got a fantastic future with the club.

“For him, it will be do we get him out to the League next season to see if he can continue his progress. Or, again, a bit like Hayden Muller, which one of them is closer to the first team? Does one of them stay in the building or do they both go out on loan?

“We’ll know that pre-season.”

“I was 18, we were in a relegation battle and it turned me into a man. I played in difficult, high-pressure games and I managed to come out of it positively.”

Rowett knows what it’s like to reach the top of the football ladder after starting out in the lower leagues. He began his career with Cambridge United before first playing in the top flight for Everton.

Rowett feels the focus of young players should be to gain first-team experience rather than get distracted by the prospect of a quick move to a big club.

“I think the England team at one point consisted virtually of all players that had some EFL experience, whether that was out on loan or starting at clubs like that,” Rowett said.

“For me, a young player only fulfils his potential after he’s played 50 league

games somewhere. You never quite know what the potential is.

“So my opinion is, if I were a young player - I started out at Cambridge United – I’d pick a club where I thought I had an opportunity to get into the team.

“That’s more important than the badge on your tracksuit being a Premier League badge.

“That’s how I think about it and that’s how a young player should feel, in my opinion.

“However, we know there are agents, there are people telling players certain things that maybe at certain ages they’re going to listen to more than if they were a little bit older and a bit more mature.

“It’s the way of the world, you’re not going to stop it.

“But that’s what I think young players should want to do – play games.”

Millwall to make decision on striker in pre-season EXCLUSIVE

Olaofe, 21, scored fourteen National League goals last season on loan at Sutton United as the south London side were promoted to League Two as champions.

Rowett said ‘Tanto’ is seen as an eventual first-team player for the Lions.

Millwall return for the start of their preseason preparations next Monday week.

“I spoke to Tanto in the past week,” Rowett said. “I had a really good conversation with him. He’s a really good guy and a great young player with a fabulous attitude.

Lenny has double advantage EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk RYAN LEONARD is happy to be a defensive linchpin or a midfield dynamo next season – when he hopes for the return of fans and “a little bit of normality”.

Leonard, 29, is the ultimate Mr Versatile in Millwall’s squad. Last season, the former Southend and Sheffield United man played on the right side of a back three, right wing-back and in midfield.

He has also played in a holding role for the Lions, and even as a number 10, the latter most notably in the classic 3-2 FA Cup fourth-round win over Everton in 2019.

Leonard is highly valued by boss Gary Rowett, and Millwall activated a clause last season to extend his deal by another twelve months.

Leonard was a regular in 2020-21 until his campaign was cut short when he damaged ankle ligaments in February.

The Lions signed George Evans and Maikel Kieftenbeld last January, while Billy Mitchell is also going to push hard for a first-team place next season.

Rowett’s current preferred formation is 5-3-2, and Leonard admitted he has been pushed for an answer a number of times on where he sees himself in the side.

“It’s a very good question, I‘ve had a lot of people ask me that question,” Leonard said.

“I enjoy the right-side centre-mid or right-side centre-half. Both of those positions really suit me well.

“I’ve not played as many games as a right-sided centre-half but it is a position I’ve really liked playing in. That would be one that would suit me in the long run.

“Obviously I‘ve played most of my games in my career as a midfielder. It’s nice to set yourself in one position but in either of those positions I‘ve really enjoyed it.

“It was interesting while I was injured to watch different games because a lot of teams now play three or five at the back.

“It’s helped me to watch our games and other games and look at players in that

[defensive] position and midfield.

“I tried to take it as a positive: okay, I’m not playing but I can get to watch a lot of games from the stands, which does help.

“Especially the home games, you sit right at the top of the stand so you get the bird’s eye view of the game. When you’re watching it it looks so much easier than when you’re on the pitch.

“It was interesting to watch games and get that different perspective. Not everyone does their coaching badges but players know enough about football to know about different positions and runs

and things like that.

“It was a real eye-opener and I got a different view of it.

“I’ll be very happy and comfortable playing in those two positions.”

Leonard admitted he had mixed feelings going into the summer break. On the one hand, it means that come August it will have been six months since he last played competitively.

But after packing a 46-game league campaign in between mid-September and early May, he knows exhausted players welcomed their first proper pre-

season since 2019.

“It was almost like two seasons rolled into one,” Leonard said. “We finished one season, had two weeks off, then straight into the next season.

“So it felt like you had a fifteen, sixteenmonth season. I was working really hard to try to get back for a few games but it wasn’t meant to be.

“It’s good for everyone, especially the lads who played almost every game.

They did really well to last that long so everyone deserves a good long break.

“Hopefully going into the new season

Malone revealed there was a “deadly silence” in the dressing room after the game, before acknowledgements for the departing players, including Shane Ferguson, Shaun Williams and Frank Fielding.

It wasn’t the way the squad wanted to end the campaign, after consecutive tophalf second-tier finishes for the first time since 2005.

“It kind of felt like, for me anyway, it was like a little bit of a let-down after what we had done in the season,” Malone said.

“No one wants to end that way, conceding six goals. You can half-see how it looks as well, last game of the season, nothing to

play for. You lose 6-1 and it looks like you don’t care when that wasn’t the case at all.

“Everybody in the squad had the intention of finishing strongly. We conceded six, something we hadn’t done all season, and it looks bad on the record.

“That’s something that can’t happen again next season if we’re going to do what we want to do. It just can’t happen.

“I don’t think we’ll look back on it too much but we have to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“It wasn’t the feeling we wanted after such a tough season. We wanted to get in there and put the music on, have a bit of a good time for an hour or so before we

“It’s almost strange now, I watch highlights from games a couple of years ago and it feels weird seeing fans in stadiums. You never think you’re going to get back to that.

‘Can’t happen again’ – defender admits to ‘let-down’ on final day

The Lions had little to play for on the final day and Malone said “it looks like you don’t care”, but he stressed “that wasn’t the case at all”.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL CAN “find value” in the free transfer market this this transfer window – with boss Gary Rowett pointing out that summer signing Scott Malone could have cost up to £1million if he had been under contract.

Malone, 30, has Premier League as well as an abundance of Championship experience and will officially join from Derby on July 1, when another free agent, goalkeeper George Long, will also complete his switch from Hull.

The Lions have had success with free agents in recent seasons. Players such as Tony Craig, Steve Morison, Shaun Hutchinson and Alex Pearce joined Millwall

after their contracts ran out at other clubs.

There are currently over 100 Championship players set to be out of contract on July 1, including those of the quality of Jack Wilshere, Britt Assombalonga and Emiliano Marcondes.

Malone recently highlighted the example of Tom Huddlestone, the former England international who has been without a club for almost a year after he was released by Derby.

Championship clubs could be forced to trim their squads in 2021-22 as they are under increased financial pressure after more than a season without gate income.

That will mean a larger pool of free agents than normal being available from July 1.

“I think there’s always going to be value for Millwall [in the free transfer market] because we’re the type of club that have to seek that value,” Rowett said.

“You look at someone like Scott Malone who wasn’t necessarily in Derby’s plans.

We take him and he has as good a season as anyone in the Championship in that position and then we sign him on a free transfer.

“After last season if we had had to pay half a million, a million pounds for someone like Scott Malone I don’t think anyone would have batted an eyelid based on his performances.

“So we always have to try to find that value and those players.

“But at the same time we have to try to aspire to bring in the right type of player that can get us into the top six as well, which sometimes might be someone we have to spend more money on, it might be a young player.

“There are always different types of things we have to do.

“Tom Huddlestone is a classic example of that. I had him at Derby, signed him for Derby. He’s probably the best passer of a ball I’ve ever worked with. So to find someone like that not under contract shows how much the pandemic has affected the market.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT is pleased that “unique” Matt Smith has committed to Millwall for another season.

Smith – who turned 32 last week – has agreed a one-year deal and is set to officially put pen to paper before the start of pre-season in less than two weeks.

Smith joined the Lions from QPR in 2019 and was top-scorer with fourteen goals – thirteen in the league – in his first campaign.

The former Leeds and Fulham striker didn’t have as productive a campaign last term, scoring five goals in 34 games before his season ended in March after he broke his foot.

But Rowett was determined to secure the experienced forward for another season, and Smith follows Alex Pearce in signing a new deal.

“Matt’s proved his worth over the years he’s been at Millwall,” Rowett said. “He scored thirteen goals the season before last. He scored some important goals for us last season whether that was starting or impacting the game from the bench in the latter stages when we know he’s so effective as well.

“Injury curtailed his season a little bit.

“We need to be able to score goals from every single opportunity, every single type of way and Matt’s really unique in that sense.

“He’s such a difficult player to play against. He’s such a popular guy amongst the group and we always wanted to see if we could tie him down for an extra season.”
