Southwark Council leader Kieron Williams announced his newly reshuffled cabinet team at Monday’s council assembly meeting at Tooley Street.

The new executive team will lead the local authority until the next local elections in May 2022.

In a surprise move, Johnson Situ - a former leadership contender - has decided to stand down after five years in cabinet.

Two new faces have also been promoted into the leadership team; North Walworth councillor Darren Merrill and St Giles councillor Jason Ochere.

Cllr Williams said: "As we cautiously emerge from the pandemic, your new cabinet will spend the next twelve months continuing to deliver on the issues that matter most; tackling the housing crisis, supporting our local economy, delivering a new youth deal and greening our borough to deal with the climate emergency.

He also paid tribute to Cllr Situ’s ‘incredible service’, saying: “He is a friend and colleague whose advice has always steered us in the right direction and he will be missed.

“I wish him the very best for the future."

man rescued after trying to save his dog in thames

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey man climbed into the River Thames to save his dog, after the beloved pet jumped in seemingly at random.

Deven Vyas was walking his dog Apollo along the river from his home in Tooley Street to a friend's house in Rotherhithe for a Eurovision party on Tuesday, May 18.

Suddenly Apollo jumped into the Thames near Cherry Garden pier, apparently for no reason. "It wasn’t like he chased anything, there wasn’t a bird or a cat or anything - he utterly randomly did a sprint towards the wall and went flying towards the Thames," Deven told the News.

Lawyer Deven called the emergency services but soon began to fear for Apollo, a ten-month Weimaraner.

"I looked over the wall and couldn’t see him," Deven said. "Ripples in the water - I assumed the worst, I assumed he’d drowned and died.

When I looked over the other side I saw that he had actually managed to get to the ledge on the side. I was trying to keep him calm. He started to panic and started to cry. I could see that the tide was getting a bit more aggressive.

"He hates water, it’s not like this is a dog that likes swimming. He doesn’t even step on puddles, he’ll jump over puddles. But he was panicking, I could see him thinking about getting back into the water to get closer to me."

Fearing that Apollo would be swept away by the treacherous river, Deven bravely got in the water to save his dog.

Asked if he was scared for his own life, Deven said: "Honestly, at that moment my fear was him getting swept away. I just thought I’d find a way to keep myself hanging on. I had no choice really - there was no way I could let that happen. If he got swept in whilst I was watching I think I’d never have gotten over it."

But he soon got stuck himself, trapped by the fierce current.

Luckily the lifeboats arrived after about fifteen minutes and hauled both of them out of the water - although it took a while for them to coax a shocked Apollo into the boat. "He’s a big dog, a heavy dog, he doesn’t like water," Deven said. "So the whole thing was quite surreal to be honest."

Deven was full of praise for the lifeboat workers who saved him and Apollo. "Those guys were amazing. So compassionate and so gentle as well," he said.

After being dropped off at London Bridge City pier, Deven was forced to cancel his Eurovision plans and went home with Apollo for a hot shower and a long sleep.

Tragically, Tuesday's incident came just four weeks after the death of Deven's other dog Eros.

"We’re still grieving from the loss of Eros," he said. "He’d been with us for ten years. Such a lovely beautiful boy.

"That was the very first thing that went

through my mind when I was looking over the wall. I thought ‘Oh my goodness, I’ve just lost two dogs in a matter of weeks.’ - which was just a horrific feeling.

"Apollo's a baby, he’s only ten months. He's looking forward to a whole life ahead of him."

Both dogs are named after Greek gods and Deven said their names suit their respective characters. "Apollo lives by the name of dancing and music. He clearly does have lots of energy. Eros just lived by his name too, he just spread love. Eros was very well known around London Bridge, if you went for a walk, quite often people stopped me asking ‘is this Eros?’ when he was alive."

Apollo is now "totally fine" but Deven said he could no longer trust him and would have to put him on a lead when they walk by the Thames.

It comes after two recent tragic incidents of people dying after falling in the Thames in Bermondsey. Folajimi Olubunmi-Adewole died after jumping off London Bridge to save someone who had fallen in, A 13-year-old schoolboy died after falling off Tower Bridge.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk About 100 people gathered this week for a vigil for Sasha Johnson, the young mother and Black Lives Matter activist who is in a critical condition after being shot in the head in Peckham on Sunday.

Sasha, 27, is being treated in King’s

College Hospital. Police say they think her shooting at a house party in the early hours of Sunday was carried out after ‘four men entered the garden and discharged a firearm’.

Friends and family held the vigil at 3pm on Monday in Ruskin Park, just to the south of the hospital. With rain pouring down, a core group of people close to Sasha formed a circle to shelter in the park’s bandstand while others gathered outside.

A friend of Sasha called her “a queen” and urged the crowd to “put a ball of healing around her”. A man played a drum with his hand while others murmured their appreciation for the woman’s words.

“Sasha supports the young people in everything she does, she’s a light in the darkness and she continues to shine,” the friend said. “She will continue to create opportunities that will turn into a testimony, no matter what. We come today because this is a response to the

work she has done for us.

“The first person to call, if anything happens to our enemy, not us, she will be the one to make sure she is the voice for our community. No one can contest that she has been consistently consistent.

Nobody can take that away from her…”

The woman added that nothing will “change the narrative of what [Sasha’s] life is going to be.”

“Because when she speaks she speaks from the ancestors. When she smiles you can see Oshun [a Nigerian Yoruba goddess of love] come true. When she stands and roars you can see Ogun [an African god of warriors] speaking through her…

“That’s our sister. That’s my sister. My sister needs you to focus today. Put a ball of healing around her. She just needs to rest. This is just another story, just part of her next chapter. It’s not that deep. Come on, this is Sasha Johnson, are you mad?”

Sasha, a mother-of-three, had an operation following the attack on Consort

Road, according to the Taking The Initiative Party (TTIP), of which she is a member of the leadership committee.

She was also a prominent figure in last summer’s Black Lives Matter marches in London.

Police said they believe she was shot by a group of four young black men, who “entered the garden of the property and discharged a firearm.” The men left the property before the police arrived.

Commander Alison Heydari, leading the investigation, added: “I want to take this opportunity to reassure you that we are doing everything possible to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.

“Tackling violent crime on the streets of London is a top priority for the Met, and the people of London have a vital role to play in that.”

TTIP said after the attack that Sasha had received several death threats. But Cdr Heydari said: “We are aware of Sasha’s involvement in the Black Lives Matter movement in the UK and I understand the concern this will cause to some communities – however I wish to stress that at this time there is nothing to suggest Sasha was the victim of a targeted attack.”

TTIP questioned this in a later statement, asking how police could know what had happened when they are not

able to speak to Sasha. Founder member Charles Gordon said: "I would like to say that we need to stay cautious and aware - the truth is that we don't know what has happened here, but we do know that an attack on one is an attack on all."

Mr Gordon added that a widelycirculated Twitter account in Sasha’s name that had posted racist tweets was fake. The account has now been suspended.

Politicians also expressed their concern about Sasha’s shooting.

Harriet Harman, MP for Camberwell and Peckham, said on Twitter: “Deep sadness and solidarity for Sasha Johnson in King’s College London today. Guns have no place in Peckham. [Met Police] investigation of utmost importance. This horrific crime must not go unpunished.”

Cllr Kieron Williams, leader of Southwark Council, added: “I am shocked and saddened that this has happened in our borough, our thoughts are with Sasha and her family and we wish her a full and speedy recovery. We are assisting the police with their enquiries so that they can establish what happened.”

down a warehouse on Fenning Street next to the site, which is currently an open-air market. The new plans keep the warehouse, which will be converted into shops on the ground floor and a flexible meeting and event space for the local community on the first floor.

Other changes include a new garden on the east end of the site, and the addition of cheaper office space aimed at small medical technology companies.

The original proposals would have also seen a new music venue built, but the updated version has removed this amid concerns about noise and anti-social behaviour.

The ground floor will be made up of independent shops, restaurants and bars, CIT said. There will also be space for artists’ studios.

Vinegar Yard’s resubmitted plans are now even taller kit@southwarknews.co.uk Developers of a proposed Bermondsey building that was rejected by Southwark Council’s planning committee for being too tall have drawn up new plans - for an even taller tower.

CIT’s Vinegar Yard office, retail and community development on St Thomas Street by London Bridge was thrown out in June last year for its height and overshadowing effect on nearby housing and heritage sites. That building would have been 85.8 metres at the highest.

The new plans, available on private equity property investor CIT’s website, show a new proposed maximum height of 97.1metres, decreasing in height from west to east. The building would have nineteen storeys, the same number as previously, but according to the developers the higher ceilings in the new plans would meet nearby Guy’s Hospital rules for “healthy and flexible buildings”. CIT said that Guy’s has expressed interest in taking some of the offices.

Although the Met have routinely sought to reassure parents by saying abductions or attempted abductions are extremely rare, street harassment and gang exploitation are sadly not out of the ordinary.

“It’s been going on for years and there are so many children missing, especially black children, but no one knows about it,” Yvonne said.

Like many, she is shocked that there is so

little publicity about some under 16s who have been missing for weeks at a time.

As vice-chair of Manor Estate’s TRA she is very involved in its efforts to protect children in the estate by putting on holiday and other activities, and raising awareness of personal safety.

The TRA has also been campaigning to make it a requirement for all tenants organisations to fully Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS check ) their officers and volunteers, something Manor Estate already does.

She now hopes to get more local schools involved in the place of safety campaign so as many young people as possible know how they can get help.

“The response to it is brilliant,” she added. “I didn’t realise it would take off as much as it has. I’ve got people messaging me every day about it. The shops down the Blue, everyone really, have been fantastic.”

Ship Aground landlady Pat Jarman saw the call out online and immediately wanted to help. “I thought it would be a good idea, we aren’t going anywhere and we’re the only community place on this street,” she said. “I wouldn’t like my children to have been threatened, it seems to be happening more and more. It’s quite frightening, but if anyone needs help we are here. Our pub is a community pub here in Dockhead. It has always been a community here.”

Elite Fish Bar owner Niyazi said the idea was that ‘prevention is better than cure’.

“Parents are worried about what is happening in Bexley and Bromley and that it could happen here,” he said. “Rather than waiting for something to happen, we are making sure that shopkeepers here are ready.”

Although police later said there was no evidence the four reported incidents in Bexley and Bromley were linked, or abductions were planned, they did later admit to failings in one investigation involving the eleven-year-old son of a Line of Duty actress. He had sought refuge in a basketball court after two men in a van tried to abduct him in Beckenham. In a later statement, Superintendent Andy Brittain, from the South Area BCU, admitted: 'I fully acknowledge our initial response was not sufficient given the extremely worrying circumstances of this incident.”

LFB has been contacted for more details on when the exercise will take place and how long it is likely to last.

The 64-metre ladder will be kept at Old Kent Road fire station, according to the leaflet.

The brigade said last year that it had taken on three 64-metre turntable ladders, which are “the largest of their type in the UK”. The ladders are mounted on fire engines.

They “will provide the Brigade with assets that have a vastly increased

operational capability due to their extended height and reach,” assistant commissioner Richard Mills added in a report to LFB management last year.

“The specification of the vehicles also provides additional operational benefits in a number of scenarios such as an elevator for multiple rescues and an on board integrated pump.”

Maydew House on the Abbeyfield Estate has been largely empty since residents were decanted for major works, although it has been used for temporary accommodation.

Campaigners protested outside the block last year, arguing it should be refurbished “immediately” to provide council homes during the pandemic.

All 255 of the flats in the refurbished block will be council homes, the council said last year. Work is due to finish in 2023.

By Katherine Johnston and Kit Heren katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Dozens of shops and restaurants from the Blue to Tooley Street and Old Kent Road are now displaying posters advertising their premises as a ‘place of safety’ after a Bermondsey grandmother started a campaign to help protect our children from predators.

Yvyonne Henry, a grandmother-of-three and childminder who has lived in Manor Estate for 32 years, came up with the idea of encouraging as many businesses as possible to join the scheme last week.

She has become increasingly concerned about reports of missing children, attempted abductions, and the ongoing dangers posed by gangs.

After a post was shared on the SE16 social awareness facebook group last Friday she was quickly inundated with offers from people wanting to help.

She told the News: “It took off really quickly and I had posters ready the same day at about 5pm that evening. These issues have been going on for years, with kids going missing and needing places of safety. I’d say 99 per cent of shops are up for it and we’ve now got the posters up from Tooley Street to Old Kent Road.

Unless we put this information about there, people won’t know what is going on.

“The time when kids are most likely to go missing is between 4-7pm after school. It may be that their parents are at work or they are old enough to walk home from school and end up alone. This is when they are preyed upon.”

She is keen to stress that it’s not just kids who can benefit but anyone who is feeling threatened; including women being harassed.

Among the businesses to enthusiastically back the scheme in Bermondsey are Elite Fish Bar, Dougal’s Hair and The Ship Aground pub.

The campaign could not have been so successful without support from Compass School, who are helping to print hundreds of posters - with more still to come.

Rather than waiting for something to happen, we are making sure that shopkeepers here are ready Emma Walkey-Williams, the secondary school’s assistant principal for community, told us on Tuesday: “It’s my job to keep on top of everything that matters to the community, it’s a really important role for me given that I actually come from the area.

“I came across Yvonne’s post on facebook asking for someone to print some posters in reaction to what’s going on, and offered our services to design and print the posters. Part of our school development plan, our mission, is to be a force for good in the local community.

“It’s us trying to help in a little way what has been an incredible community movement in response to the attempted abductions. I printed originally 100 and I’ve just printed another 100 which I’m going to drop to Yvonne this afternoon.”

Yvonne says that many families, herself included, have been left worried about reports of attempted abductions in other south London boroughs, and by the sheer number of children reported missing long term, many of whom are being groomed by county lines gangs.

A shocking incident involving a young girl being targeted in Bermondsey on Monday this week has only highlighted the

importance of the campaign.

A Met spokesperson confirmed that on Monday, May 24, police were called to Abbey Street at around 1pm to reports that a man - a stranger - was attempting to talk to a girl and grabbed her arm.

Fortunately, the quick-thinking victim phoned a family member for help who alerted police.

Her description also helped officers to track him down in a nearby house just over half an hour later, and arrest him on suspicion of kidnap.

The suspect was taken into a police station and detained under the Mental Health Act. Police say enquiries are still ongoing into the incident.

Meanwhile, reports have been circulating on social media about attempted child abductions in Peckham. A Met spokesperson told us: “We are aware of significant concerns raised on social media around rumoured child abductions in Peckham, which speculate that males in white van have approached children intending to abduct them. We have received no such reports at this time.

Disused tower block to be used for training with 64-metre ladder

Bermondsey residents have been told not to panic if they see firefighters rushing towards an empty tower block to set up a 64-metre ladder this summer.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) has got permission from Southwark Council and builders Bouygues to use the empty Maydew House, to the south-west of Southwark Park, as a training site for its new ladder “in the coming weeks”.

Southwark is sixth highest in the UK for child poverty

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark has the sixth-highest rate of child poverty out of all local authorities in the UK, according to a new report.

The study, carried out by Loughborough University for the End Child Poverty Coalition, takes into account estimates of average housing costs in each area to produce its figures. Poverty in this case means the percentage of children living in households with below 60 per cent median income for the area.

With rent so high in London and southeast England compared to the rest of the UK, nine of the ten boroughs with the worst child poverty are in the capital.

Some 43.1 per cent of children are in poverty after housing costs in Southwark, according to the study. Tower Hamlets has the highest rate in the country, with 55.8 per cent, followed by Newham on 50 per cent, Barking and Dagenham on 48.8 per cent, Hackney on 47.9 per cent and Waltham Forest on 45.3 per cent.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk More than £2,000 has been raised for an anti-knife crime group by people undertaking a charity walk this Sunday, May 30.

Islington, Lambeth, Birmingham and Greenwich make up the rest of the top ten.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark is in the top 20 parliamentary constituencies for child poverty after housing costs, at 47.4 per cxent.

These ‘after housing costs’ figures are estimates based on house prices and rent in each local authority, rather than at ward level, researchers said. Child poverty before housing costs are taken into account is much lower in Southwark, at around 20 per cent.

The data shows the number of children rose by 200,000 in 2019/20, and was up 500,000 across the last five years. It does not take into account the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on the economy since March 2020, meaning child poverty is likely to have worsened further.

Loughborough’s Dr Juliet Stone, who led the report, said: “These latest statistics show that tackling child poverty remains a major challenge. The proportion of children living in a household with

income below the poverty line after housing costs has not only risen overall in the UK, but has shown an especially stark increase in certain regions....

“These statistics predate the outbreak of Covid-19, showing that the child poverty rates were worrying high even before the pandemic. This is likely to have worsened even further over the past year. It is therefore imperative that we continue to monitor child poverty in the UK and at a local level, identifying the areas that are in greatest need.”

A spokesman for the Department of Work and Pensions said: “Latest figures show that the number of children in absolute poverty has fallen by 300,000 since 2010. We are committed to supporting families most in need, spending billions more on welfare and planning a long-term route out of poverty by protecting jobs through furlough and helping people find new work through our Plan for Jobs. We also introduced our £269 million Covid Local Support Grant to help children and families stay warm and well-fed throughout the pandemic.”

Last week, Commissioner Cressida Dick made a special visit to the Met's Dog Training Establishment at Keston to meet the litter alongside Matt's partner Su, who chose their names in tribute to him.

The German Shepherd puppies are now with their new handlers to start a twelve-month training course to become fully licensed police dogs.

The three males and four females were born on Wednesday, 24 March to police

dogs Prada Van Der Daeienberghuhe “Storm” and Pascalz O.B.A Magnum Nitra “Pax”.

All names were chosen by Matt's partner Su. She has named the males Matiu, Carter and Jonah, and Kora, Blu, Valentine and Whanau for the females.

It is anticipated that the Ratana litter will first hit the streets in around three months’ time. Su will be invited back to witness the special passing out parade when they 'graduate' in May 2022, later retiring at about eight years old.

Commissioner Cressida Dick said: “I was delighted that we asked Su to name the puppies and that we were able to welcome them together to the Met in readiness for their puppy training and eventual police training.

"Matt was much loved and respected and this is just one of the ways for the Met to acknowledge and remember his service and courage.

“These puppies will one day be fully trained police dogs, out at all hours of the day and night, looking for missing people and criminals and searching for weapons.

"These police dogs and their handlers are invaluable.

“Many criminals would escape justice and crucial evidence remain undetected, if not for their assistance.

“Because of their work, the streets of London are kept much safer.”

The 21 Bridges walk, from Richmond to Tower Bridge, has been held annually since 2013, to commemorate the death of Jimmy Mizen in Lee aged sixteen in 2008, and to raise money for the charity that bears his name.

The Jimmy Mizen foundation aims to educate youngsters about the perils of knife crime. Jimmy died after his neck was cut by a shard of glass in an altercation in a bakery.

He was a keen Millwall fan, and the Lionesses goalkeeper Kelly Webster is leading the walk this year, alongside seven others. Kelly ran the walk last year too, with Covid restrictions cutting numbers back significantly.

Normally about 150 people take part.

But she has been determined both years that the walk in Jimmy’s name should go on despite the pandemic.

“Through the pandemic it’s the smaller charities that have really struggled and that;s the main thing

for me,” she said ahead of the walk.

“The marathons haven’t gone ahead and lots of people have missed out, but smaller charities have obviously suffered a hell of a lot more.”

The agency wants to know if people who use these streets want the trial measures

by London Bridge, between Oval and Elephant & Castle and between Brixton and Streatham to be made permanent.

By London Bridge, TfL put in segregated traffic lights for bikes on Tooley Street and Duke Street Hill, and removed a slip lane to make more room for pedestrians.

Between Oval and Elephant & Castle the London transport agency has tried to make the CS7 cycle lane safer by adding in new ‘wands’ to separate bikes from cars going west and south at the Camberwell New Road and Kennington Park Road junction, among other measures.

TfL has also widened bus lanes on the A23 between Brixton and Streatham and added separate traffic signals for cyclists at junctions.

The agency now wants feedback to decide whether to make changes to the schemes and make them permanent.

Streets Delivery, said: ”We want to make cycling easier and less intimidating on some of London's busier roads.

“These trial changes to roads in Lambeth and Southwark aim to give people new to cycling confidence that it is a safe and viable way to make essential journeys now, during the pandemic, but also as part of their longer-term travel habits.

“We'd really like to hear people's thoughts on the improvements we've made and will continue to work with both councils and people in the area through the trial period.'

Simon Munk, London Cycling Campaign's Senior Infrastructure Campaigner, said: “It is vital the Mayor and TfL move fast and are bold on cycling, walking and motor traffic reduction if London is to face the climate crisis.

“It's also vital schemes are trialled so they can be improved using the experience of people who have seen schemes in action, to give informed feedback. We urge everyone to let TfL know how these trial improvements for buses and cycling could be further improved in the future.”

The consultation is open until November.

Peckham historian john immortalised

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A new building in Peckham’s Wooddene Estate has been named in honour of local historian John Beasley.

Peckham Place’s Beasley House is part of the regeneration of the 1960s estate, led by Notting Hill Genesis and Higgins Partnership.

They chose to name the new building after John in recognition of his huge contribution to Peckham over the last few decades.

Alongside being the author of many Southwark history books including Camberwell Through Time; East Dulwich Remembered; and Origin of Place Names in Peckham and Nunhead, former social worker John has spent 28 years as editor of Peckham Society News.

Regular readers will know that the 81-yearold has also featured many times in this newspaper over the years, whether advocating for the community in our letters page, sharing his historical research, or backing numerous local campaigns.

In the 1990s he was recognised for his work by the borough’s mayor, who gave him the Freedom of Southwark.

Last Friday, May 21, 81-year-old John visited the new block in person with his son Michael and daughter Kathryn Chapman, saying he was deeply touched by the gesture.

Michael, who describes his father as "one in a million", said: "We are immensely proud of all that Dad has achieved in the borough since

moving to London in 1960 and delighted that his contribution to Peckham in particular has been recognised in this way.

“It is an amazing honour, for a remarkable man."

The £70 million regeneration has created a new energy centre to serve the 333 new homes, 54 of which are for social rent, 78 private sale and 201 shared ownership.

Peckham Place also has new community facilities, retail space, landscaping and open green space with private and communal garden areas and a community pocket park, with its own cycle lanes.

Murray Maunder, project director for Higgins Partnerships, said: “It was wonderful to meet John and his family and show him around the development.

“John has been an important part of the Peckham community and it is great to be able to mark his commitment to the area in this way.”

Notting Hill Genesis’ senior project manager Mark Walford added: “We are committed to honouring important figures in Southwark’s history as part of our development programme here and none more so than John Beasley, who has done so much to capture the borough’s past, is now being celebrated in the present and will continue to be remembered in the future.

“It was an honour to meet John and his family, to discuss their experiences and memories of the area and show them around a development that we are so very proud of.

“We feel it is a fitting tribute to a significant figure in Southwark’s history.”

Site earmarked for regeneration ‘worth less than half it was three years ago‘

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council offered to buy a large Bermondsey site for less than half the value the owners had previously been quoted, citing the “very restricted development opportunity” - three years after the council itself had made it much harder for the owners to build on it.

The owners of the Old Southern Forge site on Catlin Street near the Old Kent Road wanted to knock down their buildings, which were probably built in the early 20th century, and the nearby stables from a similar period, to build a development of 80 flats across four blocks between three and eight storeys tall.

They had owned the site since the early 1990s and began to think of this development as their “pension”. The owners got an independent valuation on the land, which the News has seen but chose not to reveal.

They also asked English Heritage to work out whether the buildings were worth listing in 2011, which would have scuppered the plan. The conservation experts said they were of local interest but “are not early enough or of sufficient architectural interest to warrant listing”.

The forge owners, who asked not to be named, pressed ahead, working with planning consultants to draw up a potential scheme and got a demolition order for the buildings. They submitted a pre-application scheme and site promotion report in 2015. Their scheme would have included space at the rear for allotments or some kind of park, which

they say would have been a boon to the ward, which has among the lowest levels of open space in Southwark.

But in 2018 Southwark Council put an Article 4 direction on the site - which prevented the owners demolishing the buildings without planning permission with immediate effect.

The council said in a report at the time: “Although the Old Kent Road has a rich and varied history, much of the historic fabric relating to it has been lost through Second World War bombing, post war slum clearance and estate building, railway and canal construction and subsequent decline, infrastructure such as the Bricklayers Arms junction and flyover and car-led development.

“Given their scarcity, those assets that do remain play a very important role in the townscape character of the area and the social and cultural fabric of the local community.”

The council added that the buildings

were “of architectural and historic interest”. The site owners dispute this and the building’s role in the “social and cultural fabric of the local community”, given it is a private business - although the English Heritage report they commissioned said the buildings were “of clear local interest”.

Some 135 local people were consulted about the Article 4 decision, the council said, as well as a local tenants’ and residents’ association. Another 7,000 people in Southwark who are registered to receive planning updates were also consulted.

Separately, Southwark Council identified the site as a place to build 103 flats in blocks between nine and four storeys high in its ‘action plan’ for the Old Kent Road area, which is currently still in a draft stage. The council’s plan is clear that the buildings must be kept intact and the forge should keep running as a business, in line with the Article 4 ruling.

The site owners argue that the council’s plans do not provide enough open space.

The action plan appears to show buildings on the rear of the site, which is currently open space and was slated to stay that way in a previous draft of the document.

The open space in the latest draft seems to be between the three housing blocks. The council says its plan would provide more than three times the minimum required.

In February 2021, a senior council surveyor told the forge owners in an email the amount that Southwark would be willing to pay for the land - which was less than half the value the owners had been quoted by a consultant ten years earlier.

Appearing to refer to the council’s own rule preventing demolition of the buildings, the Southwark surveyor said the low valuation was because of a “very restricted development opportunity on your land” which means “its value as a redevelopment site is limited”.

Consultation on this draft of the Old Kent

Road area action plan finished earlier this month. The forge owners have written a letter to the council objecting to the draft.

The letter argues that “The land which is owned by the council should remain as much needed open space for the local community. Were the council [to] proceed with proposed plans that would reduce the size and quality of the open space this would be in direct conflict with local planning policies.

“It is considered that the original Article 4 direction was placed on the site based on statements which [the owners] strongly disagree with, was completed in a 24 hour emergency session with no consultation period given or any warning to the land owners.”

Cllr Helen Dennis, Southwark’s cabinet member for climate emergency and sustainable development, said: “Retaining and protecting Old Kent Road’s heritage has been a common theme raised by the local community since we began consulting on the Area Action Plan in 2016. Over three iterations of the plan in 2016, 2017 and 2020, the forge and stables have been identified as being of architectural and historic interest that should be retained within any new development.

“This is the reason why we issued the Article 4 – to give the buildings a layer of protection so that they could not be demolished under permitted development rights. Our consultation on the Article 4 was in line with all our planning processes, with over 100 neighbouring residents invited to consult, plus discussions with the Stevenson Crescent TRA who represent the estate.

“Although we own the open space at the back of the Old Southern Forge, at present there is no right of access to it over the stable’s land. In the latest revision to the Area Action Plan, which was consulted on between January and May 2021, we put forward an option to maximise that space and make it truly publicly accessible, so that it can be used as a community garden or allotments which residents can benefit from. The amount of public open space shown in the current draft of the Area Action Plan is 1600 sqm, more than three times the minimum we would require for the site’s allocation of housing.”

Fourteen new council flats given go ahead in south Bermondsey

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Planning permission has been given for fourteen new council homes in south Bermondsey.

The new flats, at 213-219 Rotherhithe New Road, will be in a five and sixstorey development, replacing the current two-storey building, which is to be demolished. The development will also have space for commercial units.

The building will be made of glassreinforced concrete and brick, which architects Bell Phillips said was a nod to the nearby former Southwark Park station, which closed in 1915.

Building is due to start in spring next year, with work expected to finish in summer 2023, according to Southwark Council.

Some people commented on the planning application that they objected to the scheme because they were worried that there would be fewer parking spaces in the area. There are no car parking spaces included in the scheme, although there are 27 bike parking spaces.

Others objected to the height of the development, which will be three and four storeys higher than the existing building. Planning officers said the height proposed is in character with the local area.

Tower plans submitted by the Den

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Developers have submitted fresh plans for a housing development by Millwall stadium the Den that would see 3,500 new homes built in towers up to 44 storeys high.

The "New Bermondsey" proposals would involve demolishing the industrial estate behind Surrey Canal Road for 600 new flats in three 31-storey blocks.

Housebuilders Renewal would then build another 2,900 homes over the next fifteen years in five phases on a 16-acre plot north and south of the road.

The new flats would stick to the 35% "affordable" requirement, between social rent, intermediate rent and shared ownership properties. Out of the other flats for private sale, a three-bed flat would go for as much as £725,000, according to planning documents.

Heygate paintings compared to Turner’s work

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A new exhibition has launched celebrating memories of the former Heygate Estate.

The Heygate Garden exhibition, by Elephant and Castle-based artist Reuben Powell, “focuses on the fast-changing landscape of [the] local neighbourhood, the disappearance of the old and emergence of the new.”

Built as social housing in the 1970s in Walworth, the Heygate Estate was finally demolished in 2014 after gaining a reputation for violence and squalor. But it was originally designed as a futuristic development that would change the lives of its inhabitants, many of whom had lived in overcrowded tenements in the area.

The estate’s raised walkways allowed

people to walk quite long distances without touching the ground - and it was rumoured that the architects’ original intention was to let people walk all the way to Camberwell just on these ‘streets in the sky’.

Artist Mr Powell said: “The Heygate was the first thing I saw when I came to the Elephant in the 1980s; as you came under the railway at the top of the Walworth Road it was there in front of you, unmissable.

It was a very important part of the local neighbourhood for many reasons, most importantly of course as people's homes.

“I worked with local primary school children as well on projects where they recorded the demolition of the estate. Recording the Heygate Estate was important for many reasons; its demolition signifies a major change in the neighbourhood. My work is very much a starting point for this discussion with no

clear meaning intended.”

The new exhibition, at the Jamyang Buddhist centre on Renfrew Road in Kennington, is made up of paintings and prints on tin. Mr Powell said he used the material in reference to the urban decay he depicts.

He added: “There are echoes of JMW Turner’s works of the River Thames (another of Reuben’s favourite subjects) and the distressed landscapes of Anselm Kiefer.

“The reflective surface and use of rust has the effect of increasing the depth of the picture plane and defies the viewer to find a single viewpoint; the work changing dependent on viewers place in the room and the light of the day.”

He added: “My first works of the local area were very large scale black and white drawings. They were tense and anxious pieces of work reflecting my own anxieties and the feelings that came with the first steps to change the neighbourhood.

“The paintings here I think have a sense of hope, there's light. The title Heygate Garden was a reference to the different ways the estate was seen and experienced by different people. The optimism in these pictures is of course overshadowed by the knowledge that these buildings were soon to disappear.”

The exhibition is on at Jamyang Buddhist Centre, 43 Renfrew Road, SE11 4NA. It is the first in a series of exhibitions of work by local artists to be put on at the centre.

The leader of the council has urged people in the borough to visit the new library and heritage centre, which opened last week with an exhibition about Southwark’s history.

The new centre on Walworth Road features local objects from Southwark’s past including the only known souvenir of Surrey Zoological Gardens, which closed in 1862.

Out of the first 600, 200 would be "affordable". These would all be in one tower, with the private sale flats in the other two.

Plans would also include the construction of a New Bermondsey London Overground line to service the area, as well as business space. The developer would also pay a combined £59m to Lewisham Council for community projects and infrastructure.

Renewal has long planned to build in the area, but previous plans first approved in 2012 would have meant Millwall were kicked out of the Den and so were later abandoned. These plans also only included plans for 12% affordable housing.

Lewisham Council, which is the freeholder of the Den, later came to an agreement with Renewal to build around the stadium rather than on it.

Millwall FC itself has a long lease on the land.

Twenty-five firefighters at Borough blaze

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Four fire engines and some 25 firefighters rushed to put out a flat fire in Southwark last Saturday, May 22.

The fire, on a flat in Tabard Street, started at around midday and was under control about an hour later.

The flat, on the third floor of the building, was partly damaged by fire. One man left the building before the firefighters arrived.

Fire crews from Old Kent Road, Dockhead, Lambeth and Shoreditch fire stations attended the scene. The cause of the fire is believed to have involved a lighter that was being refilled.

where to put 1,250 trees?

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Nearly 50 trees have been planted by Southwark Council and Canada Water developers British Land.

The tree-planting in the Rotherhithe, North Bermondsey and Surrey Docks wards is the start of a wider plan to put in 1,250 trees in the neighbourhood alongside the building work.

The council has invested £5 million overall in planting 10,000 trees this year. Some 2,000 trees were lost in the borough from 2010-2020.

Councillor Johnson Situ, Cabinet alongside Lendlease, the developers of the nearby Elephant Park, said the exhibition will grow with input from local residents “to form a current and inclusive story of the borough.”

Other facilities include the library’s 20,000 books computers for public use and 22 quiet study spaces.

The centre also has an event space for 50 people, a temporary exhibition space, a ‘world wall’ celebrating global cultures and the Faraday Room, a space without electronic devices that can be booked for meetings or private study.

Cllr Kieron Williams, Leader of Southwark Council, said at the launch event: “I’m so proud to be unveiling this fantastic new library and heritage centre, where there is something for everyone. Whether it’s losing yourself in one of the new books, making free use of the computers, or holding your next

The library is now open from 10am6pm Monday-Friday, 10am-5pm on Saturday and closed on Sunday. After Covid-19 restrictions are lifted, the library will be open as normal from 10am-8pm Monday to Friday, 10am5pm Saturday and 12pm-4pm Sunday.

edmunds: ‘worst case’ says officer

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A paedophile has been jailed for multiple child rapes and sex offences after an investigation into what a police officer described as 'by far the worst' case she had seen in her career.

Dean Edmunds, aged 36, from Bromley, was sentenced to eighteen years on Friday, May 21, at Croydon Crown Court after pleading guilty to 28 separate offences.

Among his numerous offences were three counts of raping a girl under thirteen, sexual assault of a minor, and making and distributing indecent photographs of children. His partner was also convicted after helping to make indecent images and performing a sex act on their dog.

Edmunds was arrested after Met detectives examined more than 1.5 million images stored on eleven of his devices. They found 6,700 indecent images of children and extreme pornography.

Officers also travelled overseas several times to interview a victim and her family.

The majority of his rape and assault offences related to one girl who was abused between the ages of three and seven.

Detective Sergeant Laura Davies, who was the first person the young girl had spoken to about the abuse she had suffered, said: “I’ve been a police officer for almost 20 years, I spent five years in the child abuse team and this case is by far the worst case I have ever investigated.

“Edmunds groomed his main victim to the point where she was so terrified of Edmunds that she was unable to tell anyone what had happened to her.

“This was an extremely traumatic experience for her but she has shown great courage and bravery throughout this investigation.

strength and for putting her trust in me as I was the first person she opened up to about what had happened.

“She started to physically shake at the mention of his name during her interview.

What is truly heart-breaking is that given the young age of the victims, it is difficult to establish what the full psychological impact will be on them as they grow up.”

Police are still trying to identify four other victims, all young girls, whom Edmunds recorded himself abusing.

Officers also found hundreds of ‘upskirting’ images he had taken of women and girls on public transport, in changing rooms and other locations.

He was sentenced alongside his partner Leanne Edmunds, aged 36, who had joined in with his horrific fantasies.

Police also found a video they had made of Leanne “engaging in a sexual act with the family dog”.

She avoided jail and was sentenced to a three-year community order on Friday, 21 May after previously pleading guilty to making indecent photographs of children, possessing prohibited images of children and intercourse with an animal.

The father of one of Edmund’s victims said: “When we were first told about what had happened I screamed in horror, I couldn’t take what I was hearing, I couldn’t comprehend what the police were saying to me. I did not want anyone to say those words to me, but they did and it will forever haunt me.

“I went through weeks of pain, sleepless nights, I could not process it. I doubted myself as a parent, the guilt was too much to bear. I should have been there, I should have stopped it, I should have protected her.

“When my daughter was born, I was new to the whole dad business but the unconditional love I felt for my little girl was like a train hitting me.

"She was a beautiful little baby, she was my little girl and I cannot describe the anger, upset, disgust and hurt I feel at what that person has done to her and what he has taken away.

“I cannot imagine how she must have felt carrying this around with her, not having told anyone. I feel so sorry for her that she had to bottle this up inside her because she was so scared to say anything to anyone.

“I will always carry the anguish of what has happened with me, but this is nothing to

TfL was bailed out last year and given another funding deal in March 2021. Its next government deal is due to be agreed by this Friday, May 28, after an extension was agreed to the original deadline of May 18. But the agency's finance chief said the short-term deals are hindering TfL's ability to plan.

"The biggest issue we face with a very short-term [thinking] is our ability to enter into long-term contracts and make those commitments," Simon Kilonback told TfL's programmes and investment

committee on Wednesday, May 19. "In order to deliver both our services and our capital programmes in an efficient and effective way, which is what is stipulated in our [government] funding agreements... we need the stability and certainty of funding like other public agencies".

He added that works that need major investment are being put on hold because TfL has to prioritise the day-to-day running of the network.

"If we continue to get a succession of short-term deals, some really strategic and important investments like the Elephant & Castle station redevelopment will simply become extremely difficult for TfL to take forward," he said.

"It's a significant multi-year commitment, with a huge amount of money being put forward by the developers and borough to help support this scheme.

"It is the right scheme to do. But unless we get that long-term certainty of funding, we are going to really struggle to be able to support these great schemes which are really important for delivering housing and regeneration in that part of London."

Tfl said in papers submitted ahead of the meeting that it is in discussions with the developers to delay its part of the funding until it has secured the money.

Work is due to complete by 2030.

Elephant and Castle station revamp is under threat due to funding issues

The work on the station is meant to be joint-funded by TfL, Lendlease and Delancey, the companies redeveloping the surrounding area. Works would include new escalators as well as lifts, and make it easier to get from the Northern line to the Bakerloo line.

But TfL's finances have taken a hit from the pandemic, with many fewer people using public transport. The agency relies

"Edmunds did not give a second’s thought to the women and girls he took photos of as they were going about their daily lives.

“Edmunds possessed a significant amount of indecent images across a number of devices. Throughout my career I have had to view a large amount of images and I can only described these as the worst type of child abuse images I have seen.”

Detective Chief Inspector Dan O’Sullivan, from the South Area Public Protection Unit said: “This case exemplifies the lengths that officers from the Metropolitan Police Service will go to bring offenders like these two individuals to justice.

"In order to protect the identity of victims in this case we are unable to fully discuss the level of interagency working, but it would be wrong to let today pass without acknowledging the efforts of our overseas and governmental partners in securing these convictions. I also want to pay tribute to the tireless work of the dedicated officers who spent hours viewing the most horrific images that led to today’s sentencing.”

Man rushed to hospital after being robbed of e-scooter

The attack happened on Tuesday, May 18 at around 2pm. Police have not arrested anyone and the investigation is ongoing.

The victim was taken to hospital with a head injury after being found in the street unresponsive.

A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 2.01pm to reports of an assault on Morecambe Street, SE17.

"We sent an ambulance crew and a medic in a car. A man was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital."

A spokesperson for the Met Police added: "Police were called at 14:12hrs to Morecambe Street SE17 after a man was found unresponsive in the street.

"It is alleged that the male was robbed of his e-scooter. He was taken to hospital with a head injury. His condition is not lifethreatening. There have been no arrests and enquiries continue."

Police appeal after Tower Bridge attack

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Police are calling for help identifying two youths whom they believe may have been involved in a group that launched a "vicious" attack on a man on Tower Bridge last month.

The man was left with facial injuries after the attack by a group of three young men on April 16 at 8.10pm on the north side of the bridge.

City of London police said the three young men ran off after the alleged attack in the direction of Potters Fields Park, a popular park by Tower Bridge that has seen several disturbances in recent months.

Police Constable Ben Taylor said: "This was an appalling and vicious attack and we need to find the men who committed this unprovoked assault. We are appealing to anyone who may have information that could assist us in identifying these men, to contact us.”

Anyone with information about the identity of these men, or CCTV or Dashcam footage from the bridge or area at the time of the incident, should call 101, quoting reference 21* 208835 or Tower Bridge assault ref PC480.

ELLIE TURNBULL, 27, RILLINGTON, NORTH YORKSHIRE

It will be third time lucky to celebrate their wedding in style for Ellie and Matthew.

The North Yorkshire couple have threeyear-old daughter Lola while Ellie, aged 27, is expecting their second child in June.

She and Matthew, 28, have been together for eight years. They got engaged three years ago and started saving immediately for their big day.

“We know weddings are expensive and we wanted to save enough money to have everything we wanted ... the day we dreamed of,” said Ellie.

The ceremony was rearranged for October 2020 but restrictions meant that guests were limited to 15.

Rather than postpone again, they went ahead with just the ceremony.

“It was devastating,” said Ellie. “There was a lot of our family not allowed to come. Deciding who should be there was hard but that was the way it had to be.”

Disappointment has now turned to delight and excitement with Ellie and Matthew’s big day, including another ceremony, scheduled for October at the same venue.

Planned after the June 21 step 4 stage of the roadmap, they intend to invite 100 day guests, joined by 60 more for an evening party.

“It will now be the most exciting of days, absolutely awesome, really brilliant,” added Ellie.

pioneering move at evelina for caring for babies with parents Evelina London Children’s Hospital’s unit for unwell newborn babies is to give parents equal say in decision-making alongside doctors and nurses, in a “pioneering” move.

Usually in the NHS the clinical team takes the lead on decisions about standard treatment for babies.

The new model, called FICare, was launched in Canada and is expected to become the norm in the UK. The Evelina neonatal unit will be the first of its kind in London.

Elaine Wood, neonatal sister, said: “We’re excited to be launching FICare on our neonatal unit as it has significant benefits to parents and babies. It not only improves clinical outcomes, but improves the experience families have on our unit.

“Having a baby on the neonatal unit is often unexpected and overwhelming. It can be a traumatic

time for families, and affect their mental health. It is great to know that we can really make this experience better. By working collaboratively to care for their baby, we can ease some of their anxiety and enable parents to feel like parents, even when separated from their baby.”

The new unit is expected to be fully up and running in a year. Three staff members are working full time on it now, including a senior nurse and a psychologist, with support from the Guy’s and St Thomas’ charity.

New techniques include helping train new parents in various ways of caring for their babies, like feeding and skin-to-skin contact. A staff educational programme is also being developed.

Ian Wright opens up to Maudsley doctor about his abusive childhood Former Arsenal and England footballer Ian Wright has spoken with a Maudsley hospital psychiatrist about the “traumatic” experience of growing up in an abusive home.

Originally from Brockley, the former footballer said in the BBC documentary Ian Wright: Home Truths that his stepfather beat his mother and tried to strangle her. She abused him in turn, often telling him as a child that she wished she had an abortion instead of giving birth to him.

Ian Wright is now a frequent Match of the Day pundit but as a boy was made to face the wall, away from the television, when the BBC football highlights show came on on Saturday nights.

He talked to Dr Nuri Gene-Cos, a consultant psychiatrist at the Trauma and Dissociation Service at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust about his experiences.

Dr Gene-Cos said: “This is an important documentary which we hope will encourage people to acknowledge their traumatic experiences and to seek help.

“It was a privilege to be part of a very informative, insightful and heart-felt programme. It deals with issues of childhood trauma, in its impact in adult life as well as with how perpetrators can be helped.

“Meeting Ian was a great experience, he is a courageous and authentic

person. I was not a football fan before meeting him but now I see him everywhere!”

In the programme Ian visits schools to see how ways of tackling the impact of abusive homes on children have changed since he grew up in the 1970s.

He also visits a charity that works with men who have committed abuse or are at risk of becoming abusive.

Trying to bond with your baby when you’ve been separated at birth and they’re in an incubator can be really challenging and upsetting. It can also be daunting for parents to try and cuddle a premature baby, especially if they are connected to lots of machines.

“Having the skills to know how to feed your baby through a tube, how to safely hold them and get involved in their routine will help you gain the confidence for when your baby is discharged.

“I’m pleased I’ve been able to help shape the launch of FICare at Evelina London as having this support implemented into their routine care will be a great help to families.”

Farm’s therapeutic gardening workshops A new “therapeutic” gardening workshop for Southwark residents launched at Surrey Docks Farm this week.

The free workshop is running every Wednesday from 10.30-12.30, starting this week, May 26. Plans include growing vegetables and herbs, and learning

about the properties of different plants, according to Amy Hodgkinson, who is running the workshop for Southwark Wellbeing Hub. Spaces are limited to just four people at the moment because of Covid-19 concerns, but with restrictions due to lift in just under a month, numbers should

rise.

Comment The Tories’ post-Covid plans are ‘truly pathetic’

fter a difficult start to 2021, it is wonderful to see Southwark slowly returning to the lively, vibrant community we all love and lovely to know families are beginning to be able to see one another again after such a long time apart. I only saw my dad once in 2020 but was able to spend a week with him before he passed away this month. I have been amazed and grateful for the kind words from friends and strangers alike following his sudden death.

The current reopening has only been possible through people’s collective determination, following everyone’s sacrifice, and requires us all to get the full vaccination from the NHS. Our frontline healthcare workers have saved thousands of lives and we owe them a special, additional thanks for their heroism. Clapping them is not enough and Labour will continue to fight for a fairer pay settlement than the real terms cut being imposed by Johnson’s Tories.

Shopworkers also deserve our thanks and praise for their efforts in the last year. As we locked down, they have literally opened-up and ensured we remained fed and stocked up on essentials. We cannot ‘level up’ London or the country without tackling the dodgy employment practices in many large shop chains; frontline workers

Ministers told us Brexit would ‘take back control’ of our borders but they have been left wide open when the US had the worst covid rates globally and more recently as India has been gripped by a new variant affecting over 100,000 people a day.

In Parliament, we had the Queen’s Speech following the sad passing of Prince Philip. The Government’s plans should have been an ambitious programme to begin the rebuilding post-covid. The post-war Labour administration prioritised creating the NHS, building more homes than any Government ever, and establishing our crucial social security system.

The Labour 1945 legacy is one we can all be proud of, especially following a national crisis and in a period of genuine austerity.

The 2021 Tory equivalent is truly pathetic given their massive majority. They even neglected their manifesto promise to overhaul social care. Labour is calling for a ten-year investment plan in a new National Care Service whilst Johnson ignores older people, carers and disabled people urgently requiring reform.

The Tories also failed to tackle immediate pressures like that, covered by the News last week, of people in homes deemed dangerous but who are unable to move. Southwark has the fifth highest number of applications to the Building Safety Fund following Grenfell, but help still is not reaching leaseholders in desperate straits. The Queen’s Speech could have addressed the cladding issue facing thousands of people in Southwark and across the country, but Ministers instead put politics first: announcing plans to alter how people vote in order to favour the Tories. This crude politicisation and distorted prioritisation does nothing but exacerbate the problems we face in Southwark and nationally as we emerge from covid and represents an ignoble, grubby motivation at a time the public expect far better.

throwing fuel. If we stay on our current path, we are set to make ourselves extinct. On the way, life will become much harder. Large parts of the world will become infertile and uninhabitable. Coastal cities – that means us, in London – will disappear underwater. Before that, summer temperatures will become too hot for humans. Heatwaves in the UK and across Europe in the last decade have already been responsible for thousands of untimely deaths.

Burning fossil fuels is both stoking long-term disaster and causing needless illness and misery today. A recent King’s College London report using data from Lambeth found a strong correlation between episodes of diesel-related air pollution and increases in GP appointments for asthma, especially among children, and prescriptions for inhalers.

We need to stop burning coal, petrol and gas. And quickly. To have a chance of staying in the ‘safe zone’, the habitable planet zone, we need to cut global emissions in half, this decade. Or, in other words, to give the children who are in primary school today a chance of a decent life,

adults have to act now. The longer we wait, the harder it will be.

One big chunk of the problem is the way we heat our homes and water, responsible for around 20 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions. Southwark Council could use its purchasing and planning powers for good: properly insulate its 52,500 properties, stop installing gas boilers, and ensure that all developers retrofit or build to the highest energyefficient standards. But the council’s Climate Strategy has still not been implemented – more than two years after the council declared a climate emergency.

Many proposals on housing in the July 2020 draft are weakened by mealy-mouthed phrases like ‘whenever possible’. We need councillors to push for real action.

A significant change you can make as an individual is to switch to electricity produced by wind and sun. It’s no longer a luxury: as www. moneysavingexpert.com explains, you can ‘go green and save over £300 a year’. If you haven’t done it yet, it’s a good place to start.

Place of safety campaign is an example of what can happen when a good idea and community spirit come together

yonne Henry’s ‘place of safety’ campaign shows people power at its best.

All it took was one bright idea and a quick post on facebook before hundreds of people were lending a hand.

Her efforts mean that across Bermondsey children will always have somewhere they know they can run to in a time of crisis.

And it’s not just young people who can benefit - anyone feeling threatened can seek aid.

The number of young people being groomed into gangs and disappearing for weeks on end is terrifying.

Although we don’t know the story behind every missing teenager, the fact that so many under 16s are gone for weeks at a time and yet there is no national police appeal, and little in the way of information about them, is shocking.

A quick search on Missing People’s website brings up 25 children all currently missing from London. Let that sink in - twenty-five.

Ten of them have been missing for between one and six months. Five have been missing for even longer.

A series of reported ‘attempted abductions’ in Bexley and Bromley has also caused widespread alarm.

Sent from Coventry

It is fitting that Coventry Boy Paul Catherall opens his Sent From Coventry exhibition to coincide with the beginning of the city’s status as UK City of Culture, because the artworks are a homage to his hometown, writes Michael Holland.

I have been an admirer of Catherall’s work since the first time I saw it displayed in Oxo Gallery several years ago. I fell in love with his Elephant & Castle and National Theatre, and his underground posters.

One reason is that he celebrates the Brutalist and Modernist architecture that I grew up with in the second half of the 20th century - Much of the Silwood Estate in Rotherhithe was considered Brutalist but we didn’t know that in the 50s and 60s. And, secondly, because he’s bloody good at what he does.

I have become accustomed to the artist’s London works: Battersea Power Station, the GPO Tower, and just about every building along the South Bank, which will be included in the exhibition, but I saw something else in these new Coventry works. It was if he had put extra love into them.

Whereas the artworks I have come to admire and desire would sometimes be made up of just three primary colours laid down in blocks of ink to create a very satisfying whole, the Coventry images burst with colour, layer upon layer of colour. I was surprised to see a cloud in the plain blue sky, and a tree adding natural texture alongside a concrete facade. There were even parts that look like they have been worked by brush!

Bedwyr Williams comes to Bermondsey Bedwyr Williams is a Welsh artist who has rapidly leapt up in my estimation for his thumbnail sketches of the art world he inhabits, writes Michael Holland.

Bedwyr was at the press viewing of his latest exhibition, Milquetoast, and he doesn’t come across as someone who would be constantly pin-jabbing away at contemporary life and instigating online tiffs. But he also doesn’t look like a man who suffers fools gladly. However, he gets away with daily Instagram bites at his world because his art and wit combined are beautiful pieces of work.

For 20 years Williams has been creating art but in recent years he has been using Instagram to show his work, and even more so during the pandemic. He said his number of followers doubled over the lockdowns, with the New York Times also climbing aboard as a fan.

But iPad drawings online are far from the only medium the artist uses, citing sculpture, video, drawing and even stand-up as ways to get his

message across. Most of which can be found in Milquetoast, his exhibition spread over the two Southwark Park Galleries sites.

The Lake gallery focuses on his iPad drawings, screened on a loop, while display cases showcase his sketchbook satire, drawn from his lived experience. They hilariously hit home.

In Dilston Gallery, the artist has created a street of imagined buildings that follows his own thoughts of art galleries being ‘these buildings that are often funny shapes or appear to teeter or lean but still have toilets and dustbins…’

There, too, is Militia, a gorgeous animation voiced-over by Williams’ soft Welsh lilt, so deadpan as to make the viewer unsure if the comedy created in the words is deliberate or naïve. Trust me, it is meant, and all the funnier for it.

Paul Catherall’s work is as good as ever - Perhaps even better as he and his art grow together. He continually

But did the poverty-striken nurse ever receive a penny?

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A new book has been published about Mary Seacole, the pioneering Jamaican nurse who helped look after British soldiers in the Crimean War in the 1850s.

The Marvellous Adventures of Mary Seacole is the script of a one-woman play by author and actress Cleo Sylvestre, which she has been performing for years.

The book refers to a benefit event for Ms Seacole held by the army at the former Royal Surrey Gardens in Penton Place in Walworth. Most of the gardens are no longer there; they were sold for redevelopment in the 1870s although Pasley Park remains.

The Crimean War saw outbreaks of cholera that killed hundreds, as soldiers from Britain, France, Sardinia and the Ottoman Empire came together to fight Russia. A government minister appealed for nurses to go to the region

to treat the sick and wounded.

Ms Seacole travelled to Crimea from England under her own steam, after struggling to secure sponsorship for the trip. While there she cared for soldiers on the battlefields of the hard-fought and bloody war, and also brewed tea for the wounded while they were waiting to be treated.

Ms Seacole came back to England after the war ended in 1856. She was given medals for her efforts and gained the admiration of Queen Victoria, according to Stephen Bourne, a historian of black British heritage who wrote the 2005 book Speak Of Me As I Am about black history in Southwark.

But she was “almost destitute”, Mr Bourne said. To help her, Lord Rokeby, who had been an important military commander in Crimea, threw a fourday festival in her honour in the Royal Surrey Gardens in Walworth, with thousands of performers, including nine military bands and an orchestra, according to a report in the Times.

Ms Seacole sat along a banqueting table between Lord Rokeby and Lord George. At the end of the concert, “the name Mrs Seacole was shouted by a thousand voices” as the party rose to say cheers.

“The genial old lady rose from her place and smiled benignantly on the assembled multitude amid a

tremendous and continued cheering”.

The reporter continued: “Few names were more familiar to the public during the late war was than that of Mrs Seacole. “…Never did woman seem happier, and never was hearty and kindly greeting bestowed upon a worthier object.”

The festival is reported to have raised hundreds of pounds for Ms Seacole personally to “recommence her career of usefulness and activity”. But Ms Sylvestre’s book claims that Ms Seacole did not receive any of the money, because the company that organised the event went bankrupt shortly afterwards. Other accounts report that she was given a quarter of the profits from the festival.

Ms Seacole later wrote an autobiography, called the Wonderful Adventures Of Mrs Seacole In Many Lands. She continued to have financial difficulties and various other fundraisers were launched for her benefit after the Royal Surrey Gardens event.

Ms Seacole went back to live in Jamaica between 1859 and 1865. She returned to London after that and died in the Paddington area in north-west London in 1881.

1.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable McGee to carry out a series of crane operations, it intends, to make an order, the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering in part of the above named road.

2.

Whilst the works are in progress, or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload at any time in Hopton Street, between Falcon Point and it’s blocked end.

3.

The alternative route for affected traffic (not applicable)

4.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

5.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

6.

The works will be in operation for between the 14th June – 2nd July.

Surrey spared as weather denies Middlesex win Surrey 190 all out 259-2 dec Middlesex 160 all out 250

By Mark Baldwin sport@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY WERE saved by the weather after Nick Gubbins hit a billiant 124 from 145 balls as he and Peter Handscomb looked as if they were going to sweep Middlesex to a dramatic last-day victory against their close rivals at the Kia Oval last weekend.

In the end, Middlesex could only reach 250 for 6, a cruel 40 runs short of their win target when time ran out, with Kemar Roach finishing with 5 for 86 as four Middlesex wickets tumbled in a desperate late bid to score what became 74 from eight overs, rather than 13.That equation changed because of a rain delay of 20 minutes from 5.55pm.

Middlesex had been sitting pretty on 216 for 2, after being set 290 from an initial 71 overs when Surrey declared their second innings on 259 for 2 with Rory Burns scoring 104 not out and Ollie Pope a cameo unbeaten 37 from 20 balls.

Nine mid-afternoon overs had also already been lost to rain but, from 47 for 2, Gubbins and Handscomb had met the runchase challenge in a cool and controlled partnership of 172 that featured some high-class batting from both players on a still excellent surface.

On the resumption, at 6.15pm, Handscomb was almost immediately caught on the cover ropes for 70 and although Gubbins swung Roach for a defiant six their hopes ended when the left-hander hit the West Indies paceman to deep extra cover.

Both counties took 11 points from the LV= Insurance County Championship draw, with Surrey remaining fourth in Group 2 and Middlesex staying bottom of the six-team conference table.

Gubbins batted beautifully and has now scored 455 runs this season, while Middlesex captain Handscomb put a wretched five weeks of poor form – 60

The England Test opener has now scored 554 runs at 61.66 this season and looks in good order ahead of the two-match series against New Zealand in early June.

Mark Stoneman fell to the day’s third ball, nicking Ethan Bamber behind without addition to his overnight 74. His opening stand of 135 with Burns was the equal highest identical opening partnership in first-class cricket, matching the two 135s put on by Sussex openers Kepler Wessels and John Barclay against Somerset at Hove in 1979.

Hashim Amla then reached a useful 43, once picking up Tim Murtagh’s medium pace for six over long leg, before skying the same bowler to deep mid wicket, while Pope took two sixes and a four from one Murtagh over.

Surrey fast bowler Kemar Roach said: “What a day. It was a brave decision to declare just before lunch and set them a target but we wanted to get ten wickets and the win.

“But the ball didn’t do as much as it had done in the first innings and it surprised me that it didn’t do anything as conditions were overcast. But the pitch was slow and good for batting and credit to Gubbins and Handscomb for the way they batted. In the end, we held our nerve and to come out with a draw almost feels a bit like a win.”

Roach, who took 22 wickets in five championship games, said of his first spell as a Surrey overseas player: “I have loved every minute and it has been amazing. I really hope I can come back again and help the team win the championship.”

Dulwich pay Bank price after batting collapse Bank of England 162 (49.2) beat Dulwich 80 (36) by 82 runs

By John Lewis Sport@southwarknews.co.uk A DISASTROUS batting collapse saw Dulwich defeated by 82 runs in their top-of-the-table AJ Fordham Surrey Championship Division 2 match against Bank of England last weekend.

Dulwich travelled to Bank’s new ground at Oberon Playing Fields for the first time, and put the home side in on a very green pitch. The first half of the innings went very much to plan.

Three wickets for skipper Jon Lodwick, two for Simon Harwood, and one each for Nick Gunning and Frankie Brown saw Bank reduced to 76-7 in the 31st over. But number 8 batsman Rory Sale then led a fightback, adding 28 for the eighth wicket with James Woodroof, who made 12 before falling to Alex Gledhill, and 54 for the ninth wicket

with Will Weston, who made 18 before giving Gunning his second wicket. Sale was the last man to fall, giving Lodwick a return catch in the last over, having made 53 off 77 balls.

The last three wickets had more than doubled the score to see Bank dismissed for 162. Lodwick finished with 4-21 off 9.2 overs, while Harwood had 2-26, Gunning 2-40 and Brown 1-28 off their ten overs, and Gledhill 1-33 off eight.

Chris Purshouse and Paul SelveyClinton then added 24 in six overs

for the first wicket in a comfortable partnership that gave no hint of the debacle to come. Purshouse fell to the first ball of the seventh over and Brown followed four balls later.

This started a procession in which nine wickets fell in 22 overs for just 28 runs, to take Dulwich from 24-0 to 52-9.

Skipper Kit Wilder took the first three, and Sale and Woodroof followed up their batting prowess by taking three wickets and two wickets respectively.

A spirited last wicket stand of 28, the highest of the innings, by Gunning and

Gledhill lifted the score to 80. Gunning became the second number 8 to be top scorer, finishing with 21 not out, while keeper Michael Harms, with 10, was the only other batsman to make double figures.

Dulwich slip one place to second in the table, and will be looking to put this defeat behind them and get back to winning ways. They return home this weekend to face Worcester Park, who have won one and lost two of their matches so far and are currently joint fifth.

Lionesses add third leadership role

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL LIONESSES striker Abbey Dell has been confirmed as club co-vice-captain for the upcoming 2021-22 season.

Dell, who joined the club last season from Harlow Town, has been one of the Lionesses’ star players and is noted for her leadership and attitude on and off the pitch.

“The reason behind Abbey being given the role of vice-captain, it’s not taking anything from club captain, Libby Stubbs, or co-vice-captain, Sian Fitzpatrick, if anything it’s adding a great addition to already great teamwork,” Lionesses boss Katie Whitmore explained.

“Abbey is very vocal on the pitch, very positive, a great role model and it’s a good reward for Abbey [after] having such a successful first season with us. It’s quite good in a way that you have Sian as vice-captain in defence,

you have Libby as captain in midfield and to have Abbey up top, with the formation we play, it’ll be good to have someone in each of the units as that voice.

“Abbey was really positive with the news when we asked her to take on the role. She settled in fantastic for her first season here, especially with it being such a stop-start season. She’s really positive, she’s a great role model, she supports everyone in the squad and they support her.”

Although given a position of authority within the squad, Whitmore believes that Dell does not need to add anything to her game or leadership influence.

The manager also highlighted the work Dell has done in the community during the Covid-19 pandemic as another example of why her teammates look up to her.

Whitmore said: “I don’t want to see much change from Abbey both on and off the pitch, as she has done what we

Millwall are aiming for promotion next season.

“I definitely think our core of captains will help with the push,” Whitmore said. “We’ve got three captains who are all on the same page and they are all here for the right reasons.

“We all want that promotion, we all want success and if we lose games, all three of them leave thinking, ‘what could we have done differently as a squad? What could we have done differently as individuals?’ And that

will make it clear to the squad that is what we want from our players.

“They are here to play football, football is their focus and that’s when the results will come.”

Dell “can’t wait” for the new season.

“It feels great, I’m very honoured,” she said. “Millwall is a huge club with great history in women’s football. If I get the opportunity to wear the armband I’ll be following in the footsteps of some fantastic players, so I’m very proud.

“It did come as a surprise, I wasn’t expecting it, to be honest. My friends and family are very proud and have been very supportive to me.

“My team-mates have been great ever since I came to the club, so to have the opportunity to lead them out one day will be a fantastic feeling.

“I can’t wait for the new season to start now. I will bring experience, leadership, determination, enthusiasm, energy and passion on the pitch.

“Hopefully a few more goals and wins for the team, too.”

Four-midable Bruin claim Selkent trophy

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BERMONDSEY’S BRUIN JFC sensationally won the Selkent Cup trophy with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Crayford Arrows last weekend.

Bruin’s under-13s are the only side left at the club due to a lack of funding and they were underdogs against opponents with 50 teams through their age groups.

But with players having joined Millwall and Charlton in recent seasons, Bruin are renowned for producing talent and they showed their quality as they won in front of a crowd of more than 100 at Long Lane FC. Frankie Woods put Peter Farrell’s side ahead in the first half before Freddie Farrell doubled the lead ten minutes after the break.

Keidi Xhika’s left-footed finish made it 3-0 and Sashawn Garwood added a fourth as Bruin completed the first part of what they hope will be a cup double.

From next season, this Bruin group will join Fisher and become part of the Rotherhithe-based club’s under-14s.

“It’s crazy to think this season we had our first cup final and now we will be playing in a second final – the Red Shield – on June 20th.

Rotherhithe’s Ballers took the lead after just ten seconds when Stanley Sammland found Forclar N’kasa who set up Sulaiyman-Matthews for a lightning opener.

Vincent Sammland then dealt with a tricky effort from distance on a wet surface to preserve that 1-0 lead going in at half-time.

Ballers had much more control and possession in the second half and it was no surprise when they added to their lead.

It was a practised set-piece, as a huge throw-in from Heureli Koke found Maxime-Samuels who headed in his 20th of the season.

Nathaniel Abraham was at the heart of another move as Ballers pressed to add a third but he couldn’t finish.

Ballers introduced fresh legs to see the game out as Brian Jimenez Perez, Milo Eaves, Alex Kakoulli, Kola Lieta and Darnell Kosoko all got a taste of the action.

“The team like many have been affected with the stopping and starting of their football and the cancelation of the league over the last year. It has been frustrating and difficult,” coach Charlie Pearce said.

“But since the team’s return they have been nothing short of firstclass, with all their hard work in training and in playing consecutive games during the deep end of the competition, which has pushed the team to its limits.

“But in the end it has lead them to become deserved winners of the League Cup. It’s a massive achievement for them and one we as coaches and parents are all extremely proud of.

“Seeing the team celebrate at the end of the game was a special moment, seeing them lift the cup – this is one that won’t be forgotten.

“It’s another fantastic achievement for the team on so many levels. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the players for all their hard work and commitment throughout the two years as they are a great group to have.

“We would also like to thank the parents for their continued support for the team, they bring so much energy to each game.

Mason Bennett posted careerbest numbers last season

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT has challenged Mason Bennett to become a “double-figure striker” after Millwall gave a new contract to the former Derby attacker following one of the best seasons of his career.

Bennett played 41 games and scored six goals in 2020-21, both of those numbers his highest in a season across ten seasons as a senior professional.

Former England youth international Bennett joined the Lions first on loan in January 2019 but injures restricted him to just nine appearances in the rest of the season.

Millwall had a permanent deal in place for Bennett but renegotiated the terms after his injury issues before that transfer went through last August.

Bennett didn’t score in the first fifteen games of last season before his goal in the 2-0 win at Bristol City in December.

But he really took off after the turn of the year, particularly after being moved into a front two with Jed Wallace in a 5-3-2 formation.

Bennett scored five goals in the last seventeen goals of the season before Millwall rewarded him with a new deal.

“It was something [the contract offer] that when you look over the season you could see he had a very strong campaign,” Rowett said.

“For Mase he was in a position where he sort of needed to prove it, to play games and stay fit. Having done that I think what the club have always tried to do is reward players for those types of performances.

“That’s something that we felt was important for him.

“What he needs to do now is continue his form because he’s had a really good

Rowett wants to recruit a centre-

Wallace scored eleven league goals last season and Rowett hopes Bennett, along with a new striker, can get into double figures in the 2021-22 Championship.

Bennett played mostly on either side of a front three or as a winger earlier in his Millwall career, but Rowett now sees

him as a central attacker.

“The formations we’ve played, either three up front or two up front, if we play with three then they tend to play quite narrow, close to each other,” Rowett explained. “So we didn’t really play with conventional wingers for much more than four or five games last season.

Millwall to make decision on attacker’s future

Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk ISAAC OLAOFE helped Sutton United create history as their 3-0 win at home to Hartlepool United last Sunday clinched promotion to the Football League for the first time.

Millwall forward Olaofe scored his sixteenth goal of the season in all competitions with ten minutes left in front of 1,050 fans at Gander Green Lane.

It is Sutton’s first promotion to the Football League in their 123-year history. It could also open a route to a taste of League Two football for Olaofe if the south London club can agree another loan deal with the Lions.

game left.

“Words can’t really describe how I am feeling right now,” manager Matt Gray said. “There are so many good teams and managers in the division and you look at the size of the clubs and for us to come out on top is an unbelievable achievement.

“I am so lucky to be at this club.

Everyone pulls in the same direction and we have an unbelievable group of players and an unbelievable group of staff.”

Chairman Bruce Elliott added: “It’s unbelievable we are still getting to grips with it. To go up with one game to go is brilliant and we are still pinching ourselves.

“We couldn’t have organised it better. It’s been perfect with having fans back having missed them all season.”

“We have to change the [artificial] pitch so the grass will go down.

We will have floodlights coming in and some more seats and one or two other bits and pieces as well.

Hopefully we will have enough time to start the league season on time here.”

Olaofe is set to be part of Millwall’s pre-season preparations ahead of the 2021-22 Championship season.

Lions manager Gary Rowett will then decide whether to involve Olaofe in his first-team squad for the campaign or send the attacker out on another loan. After his exploits with Sutton in the fifth tier, Olaofe is set to have plenty of Football League interest, and Millwall have already fielded enquiries for his services at that level.

Sutton are interested in another loan deal for Olaofe as they embark on their first-ever season in the fourth tier.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk ALEX MITCHELL is having sleepless nights ahead of the last weekend of the National League season – but he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Millwall centre-back Mitchell, 19, is on loan at Bromley who are in a five-way tussle for the two remaining play-off spots.

Altrincham did Bromley a favour on Tuesday evening by holding Eastleigh to a draw. But that was still enough to move Eastleigh above Bromley into eighth. The Lions’ south London neighbours need to beat Notts County on Saturday and hope two of the three teams above them drop points.

Bromley were almost virtually out of contention for the top seven in the 95thminute of their game at Aldershot last Saturday when the score was 2-2, before Joe Kizzi’s dramatic last-gasp winner.

That leaves the Ravens ninth, level on points with Eastleigh in eighth and Chesterfield in the last play-off spot, a point ahead of Halifax and two off Wrexham in sixth.

“It’s quite funny, we played Aldershot last Saturday and I was rejected by their academy,” Windsor-born Mitchell tells the News. “It’s ironic, isn’t it? Limbs were going round, I‘ll be honest. 95th-mnute. They were knackered.”

Mitchell joined Bromley on loan in April and made his debut in senior professional football in a 2-1 away win at Chesterfield.

In eight games he has been on the losing side only once – the return match against

the Spireites – and has helped the team to three clean sheets.

He was recruited after an injury to former Millwall centre-back Byron Webster. But Mitchell thought his chances of a loan move to Bromley were gone after an under-23 game in April.

“23s football is brilliant, up to a point,” the 6ft3ins defender says. “I‘m not saying I‘m too good for 23s, I‘m not saying anything like that, but me as a physical player, I felt like I needed first-team football.

“At the start of the season I didn’t ask for a loan, but was asking a little bit about it.

Scott [Fitzgerald, head of academy] always knew I was eager to go out on loan, I‘d snap his hand off to go out on loan.

“I remember we played Birmingham and we lost 3-2 or 3-0, an absolute demolishing.

Bromley were there watching. “[Former under-23 team-mate] Rob Strachan was telling me that they were looking for a centre-back. I was like, ‘that one’s gone by, why would they look for a centre-back that’s conceded three goals?’

“But luckily Scott called me up and said, ‘you’re signing for Bromley tomorrow so get yourself down there’.

“It was a feeling of being wanted, they’ve watched you and want you in their team.

It’s a weird but great feeling.”

It’s one measure of how well Mitchell has done that Bromley are in with a chance of the play-offs despite the absence since the start of April of the experienced Webster. (They were tenth, four points off seventh having played a game more, when Webster was injured in a 0-0 draw against Stockport on April 5.)

at the club, along with midfielder Liam Trotter and assistant manager Alan Dunne (though Dunne missed the 2010 final).

Mitchell is grateful for their guidance and that of manager, Andy Woodman.

“Webbie and Trotts have been excellent with me,” Mitchell says. “Dunney, Roger Johnson, the gaffer, they’ve all been like father figures to me. They’ve all been helping me out every step of the way. I can’t not thank them for that.

“But even with all that, now before a game I stay up thinking about the game.

We’ve got Notts County on Saturday which is possibly the biggest game in Bromley’s history because it’s potentially play-offs.

“And I’d be lying to you if I told you I‘ve slept right. Like Saturday at Aldershot, it’s just the pressure. But I love it, it’s what I thrive off in football. It’s good.

“Eastleigh play Tuesday but it will come down to the last day. If we get the three points we still might not be able to get in it but I do think a team will slip up. Hopefully we do the job.”

Dunne told the NOLUT podcast recently that one of Mitchell’s main strengths is his attitude.

Former Millwall captain Dunne said that after arriving back in south London at 1am after one game this season, as the rest of the squad started to make their way home Mitchell stayed behind to help unload gear and equipment from the team bus.

Dunne said it’s one of the reasons he thinks Mitchell has a chance of playing first-team football for the Lions.

“That’s the first time I‘ve heard that,” Mitchell says. “I do remember it. I think it was Halifax away. That was a long trip.

“Credit where credit is due, they make a lot of well-attributed youngsters [at Millwall]. To be honest with you, there wasn’t a chance I wasn’t going to help out.

I‘ve always done it.

“My dad would hurt me if I didn’t help out! My mum would slap me around the neck or something. I would not be allowed to not help.

“It’s just Millwall, they’re great. You’ve got to give credit to the whole academy.

Every single coach, sports scientist, physio, scout. They’ve all got one aim: To make good people.

“Obviously it’s a football club, it’s a result-based game. But one of the main attributes they want to develop in you is being a good person in your life.

“Credit where credit is due for that.”

Mitchell has another year on his first

professional deal at Millwall. He wants more first-team football next season.

“Everything’s up in the air with Covid,” Mitchell adds. “A lot of players have been released. A lot of clubs are getting older senior players who have been released from League One clubs and League Two. “It’s obviously a very saturated market at the moment. I‘ll talk to my agent about it because that’s a problem.

“Bromley have been as good as gold.

Every day going in I’ve loved it, it’s a great club.

“Andy Woodman, the gaffer, has been unreal with me. He’s one of the reasons why I’m doing well, losing just one game.

“Next year I’ll keep working as hard as I can and whatever happens happens, really. Hopefully I‘ll be playing in a first team somewhere, wherever that will be.”

Lions set up July Gills test

Gary Rowett’s Lions side head to the Priestfield Stadium just under two weeks before the start of the 2021-22 Championship season.

The Gills were guided to a top-half

finish last season under manager Steve Evans, finishing just seven points short of a play-off place.

The clubs last met competitively in the first round of the League Cup in 2018-19, when Millwall won 3-1 on penalties after a 0-0 draw at The Den. Kick-off will be at 7pm and the club added they will confirm further pre-season friendlies over the coming weeks.

Boss favours Euro trip – but doubts over travel complicate planning

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett would like a pre-season tour in Europe as part of his side’s preparations for 2021-22 – but admitted that is far from a certainty with some restrictions on travel still in place.

In five pre-seasons under Neil Harris, the last in 2019, the Lions went to Albufeira in Portugal’s Algarve for a training camp and behind-closed-doors games.

But last summer, with only a few weeks to prepare for the new season, Rowett

and the squad went to Oriam sports centre in Edinburgh in Scotland for a week-long camp.

A scheduled friendly against Scottish Championship club Hearts on that trip was called off after a change to Covid restrictions.

The Lions then played friendlies against Southend and Crystal Palace on their return to England.

It is nine years since Millwall’s last overseas tour with fans at games, when Kenny Jackett brought his squad to Ireland for games against Shelbourne, Longford and Glenavon in 2012.

Whether they can play friendlies overseas or instead decide on a schedule in the UK, Millwall are set to start against a non-league team before building towards a final challenge against a top-flight side a week before the season starts in August.

“And then with the games you try to ramp up the challenge. So from the first game to the last game the challenge has to get bigger each time.

“You want to play against teams that you have the ball more against. You want to play against teams that might have the ball more than you.

“You have to try to reflect and resemble what the Championship season looks like.

“We’ll see how close we can get. I think it’s still going to be quite difficult preseason to solve all of those problems because teams are still a little bit cagey.

“But we’ll see how we get on.”

Wing-back Scott Malone, 30, has agreed a permanent move from Derby County for a third spell with the club.

And George Long, 27, is joining from Hull City to challenge Bart Bialkowski for the No.1 jersey.

Both transfers will officially go through when the players’ contracts expire on June 30.

Signing a goalkeeper was one of the main priorities after the departure of Frank Fielding, while Rowett was always keen on a full-time return for Malone.

The club will now focus on recruiting a centre-back, attacking midfielder and striker as well as reacting to potential departures.

“You’re just trying to go about your business as effectively and efficiently as you can,” Rowett said. “Everyone wants to get stuff done early but we’ve got another five or six weeks before we come back for pre-season.”

“There’s no massive rush, it’s about getting the right players. These two in Scottie and George we think are the right players.

“I don’t think there’s massive pressure to get everything done but the longer you go without signing anyone then of course you get a little bit edgy as a manager.

“It’s nice to get a few deals early on and it will give us a bit more time to do some of the others.”
