Tate Modern neighbours head to Supreme Court over ‘relentless’ invasion of privacy A High Court judge previously told them to get net curtains

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Residents of a luxury Bankside development are now taking their privacy appeal against the Tate Modern art gallery to the UK’s highest court.

Neo Bankside is next to a viewing platform on the Tate’s extension. Five claimants launched a legal appeal against the gallery several years ago, saying that the platform breached their privacy because visitors could peer into their homes.

Claimants wanted an injunction to force the Tate to close the viewing platform, built in 2016, or to put up screens to shield residents from gallery visitors.

The case was first dismissed by the High Court in February 2019, with the judge telling residents to put in net curtains if they were concerned about privacy. The Court of Appeal dismissed a fresh claim a year later.

Now the Neo Bankside residents have been granted a hearing at the UK’s Supreme Court, scheduled for this December, according to minutes from a meeting held by the Tate’s board of

trustees earlier this year.

In the original case, Mr Justice Mann said that while there was a material intrusion of privacy from tourists, there would be no claim if the properties had regular sized windows.

“These properties are impressive, and no doubt there are great advantages to be enjoyed in such extensive glassed views, but that in effect comes at a price in terms of privacy,” he ruled.

Residents could lower the solar blinds present in each flat, install privacy film, or even install tall plants in the winter gardens to obscure the view, he said.

“[This] will, of course, detract from their living conditions, but not to an unacceptable degree,” he ruled.

“Looking at the overall balance which has to be achieved, the availability and reasonableness of such measures is another reason why I consider there to be no nuisance in this case.”

The claimants had complained of relentless intrusion from visitors to the popular attraction, saying they felt under constant surveillance.

One resident, Ian McFadyen, had complained that the “relentless intrusion” from tourists on the viewing platform –

completed as part of an extension in 2016 – left him and his family feeling as if they were in a zoo.

His son, Alexander, claimed to have counted 84 people taking photographs into the apartment over a 90 minute period.

Another claimant, Claire Fearn, told the court that the first experience of people in the viewing gallery had left her “sick to the stomach.”

A further claimant told the court that she went to the gallery and overheard a visitor saying the “rich bastards” who lived in the flats deserved the intrusion.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Bermondsey and Rotherhithe residents have begun a new litter-picking campaign, in an effort to clear the streets of rubbish as the country emerges from lockdown and people begin to meet more outside.

The Litterati, who began picking up rubbish over Easter, meet every weekend. The group has covered areas including Stave Hill Ecological Park, Page’s Walk, the cycle path near Millwall stadium the Den and Surrey Canal Road.

Group members say they are happy to volunteer to help clean up their neighbourhoods, but they shouldn’t have to do it.

“When it’s windy things just fly everywhere,” said group member Rachel Bentley. “And when people see rubbish lying around they feel like they can just drop their own rubbish on the floor. Once norms start to slip then things can get out of control.”

“I spend a disproportionate amount of my

time thinking about rubbish. It’s about human dignity. You see piles and piles of household rubbish lying about. It’s disgusting - people shouldn’t have to live like this.”

Bentley and a friend have plans to bring together tenants’ and residents’ associations to discuss how to tackle the problem proactively. “[The council] is good at responding to the initial problem... things get cleared up that are in a very offensive state, but then it soon gets back to how it was before” she said.

“I’ve been witnessing this problem in multiple places. It clearly needs reforming. It encourages rats, and we’re getting foxes.”

Another Litterati member said on a social media page for the group: “Seeing litter on the streets and in the green spaces used to frustrate me... It still does, but now I feel I can do something practical about it. I am glad I have found others who think and act accordingly too, together we seem to be making a noticeable difference.

“Funnily enough, I actually now enjoy it - I get to walk and exercise whilst doing something I find meaningful and meeting some nice people. What is not to like?”

Six years, three kids later, mould still not sorted Missing

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A mum of three living with epilepsy is now on antidepressants after six years of trying to get severe damp and mould fixed in her overcrowded Walworth home.

Thirty-three-year-old Katie Rowe moved into the one-bed East Street council flat in August 2015 shortly before finding out she was pregnant with her first child.

She claims after quickly finding black mould Southwark Council advised her to wait a few months and ventilate to see if it improved. After repeated calls explaining that ventilation was not the issue, in May 2016 Katie and her then newborn son had to move out for the day while contractors used chemical sprays inside the property to kill the mould.

Since then more cleaning visits have taken place and more air vents have been added but the problem has only got worse - not better.

Shockingly, she is now living in the cramped property with three children but being stuck in band three has no idea when she will be able to move into a more comfortable home.

“They just clean it off and paint over it,” she said.

“I’ve had two more children since then, all with bad chests,” she added, describing the huge toll their living situation continues to have on her family’s health and wellbeing.

“I’m currently on antidepressants and I have epilepsy which can be triggered by stress. My sinuses are bad as well as my chest.”

She told this newspaper that she feels as if all her options have been exhausted, after pleading for help for years on end; even writing to Boris Johnson in a desperate bid to highlight her overcrowded and poor quality housing.

Remarkably, after making enquiries about her case, Southwark Council’s housing boss seemed to imply the issue was down to being unable to access the flat.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council housing, said: “We are aware of the issue with Ms Rowe’s flat and really want to help her.

“It’s very important that we are allowed access to her property so that we can fix the issue with a new ventilation system, which we have ready to go.

“A surveyor can also visit to do a full investigation into the matter as soon as we can arrange it with Ms Rowe, to ensure that this will permanently solve the problem.”

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A missing baby who was in urgent need of medical treatment has been found, police confirmed.

A huge search for the child and her parents had been underway since April 29, as reported by the News.

Nearly two weeks later, officers were called in the early hours of Monday, May 10 after the newborn baby girl, who is just weeks old, was brought to a central London hospital. She is now in the care of medical staff and undergoing tests.

A 33-year-old woman and a 43-year-old-man were arrested on suspicion of child cruelty the same day.

On Tuesday, a Met spokesperson said the man had been bailed and the woman remained in custody.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the baby’s disappearance are ongoing.

Telephone box on sale for a whopping £35k

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Hundreds of people came to south London’s first mass outdoor race since lockdown restrictions were eased last Sunday.

Nearly 700 runners took part in a half marathon and ten and five kilometre races in Crystal Palace Park on May 9.

Restrictions on outdoor sports events were removed about six weeks earlier on March 29.

The event was held by endurance sports organisers RunThrough, whose co-founder Matt Wood is a former international runner at age group levels.

“We were thrilled by the turnout at

Crystal Palace for our race day, Wood said. "It showed that, after people have been cooped up in lockdown for months, huge pent-up demand from runners has built up. We’ve seen a major surge in bookings.”

“The 5k, 10k and half marathon courses around Crystal Palace took in some amazing sights and the sunshine also ensured everyone had a fantastic day.”

Organisers put in place several measures to keep people safe from Covid-19, including asking runners to bring their own water bottles and encouraging them to stick to social distancing guidelines. Start times were also staggered.

Two phoneboxes near Waterloo Station are up for auction on May 26. One, a K2 model on Baylis Road, has a guide price of £45,000.

The other, a K6 on Stamford Street, could sell for between £35,000 and £40,000, auctioneers think.

The K2 model was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and brought in in the 1920s in London. The K6, a smaller, more streamlined model, was introduced about ten years later.

The phoneboxes are connected to electricity and are due to be repainted. Auctioneers BidX1 suggest turning them into some kind of business, but buyers would need to get planning permission from Lambeth Council.

£2m mental health support in schools

Free service available for mental health

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Doctors are raising awareness of free support services during this month’s mental health awareness week.

The South East London Clinical Commissioning Group says as restrictions lift and London reopens many people will still be struggling with the stress and anxiety of the pandemic.

One resource health officials are keen to promote during the awareness week, which runs until this Sunday, May 16, is Qwell, the UK’s leading provider of digital mental health support for adults.

Qwell is accessible for anyone over 26 years old in the area, with no referrals, waiting lists or thresholds to meet.

Dr Nancy Kuchemann, GP and clinical lead for mental health at NHS South East London Clinical Commissioning

Group, said: “Findings from the Office for National Statistics suggest that mental health problems have worsened across all age groups in the past year.

“Many people in south east London have had to endure an array of different problems, including employment worries, the loss of loved ones, isolation and loneliness and the absence of the usual social activities that we used to take for granted.

“These complex emotional challenges won’t just vanish overnight – indeed, the emergence from lockdown may cause its own anxieties and uncertainties.

“That’s why it’s more important than ever for people in south east London to seek support if they’re feeling anxious, stressed and depressed.”

Qwell is a free and anonymous online counselling and emotional wellbeing service for adults and is accredited by the British Association for Counselling

and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Adults aged over 26 years of age can receive free counselling sessions from qualified counsellors via an online chatbased platform.

Chats can either be accessed through a drop-in service or pre-booked sessions from any connected device.

The site is open 24 hours a day and one-to-one counselling sessions with an accredited therapist are available from 12-noon until 10pm on weekdays, and from 6pm until 10pm on weekends.

Those using Qwell will also be able to take advantage of a range of self-help tools from reading and contributing to articles, peer to peer support via online discussion boards as well as journals and goal trackers.

Younger people aged 10 to 25 in South East London can also access a similar free and anonymous online service which is available at Kooth.com.

Southwark Council says to date 76 schools have made successful funding applications for a range of initiatives aiming to build resilience and promote mental health.

At least 30,000 pupils will benefit from the scheme, more than two thirds of all students in the borough.

The local authority has also set up a dedicated taskforce responsible for working closely with schools to improve mental health among pupils as part of the council’s commitment to ensure that every single child has access to the right mental health support and care.

Projects include a wellbeing garden to create space for mindfulness and reflection, poetry workshops to encourage self-expression, and leadership programmes that provide students with opportunities to make a positive impact within their school and local community.

Schools are also encouraged to collaborate with each other, leading to joint projects including an art therapy programme, a sensory space for students requiring more targeted support, and specialist training for parents and carers.

More than 300 Mental Health First Aiders in schools across Southwark have been equipped with the skills and confidence to spot the early signs of mental health issues in a young person and guide them towards the support they need.

Rebecca Sherwood, executive headteacher at The Grove Nursery School, said: “Since we had our new soft play room installed, I actually had a parent saying to me what a change she’s seen in her child that used to be quite anxious coming into nursery.

“She said now he’s really happy coming into nursery because it’s

“We believe every child who needs mental health support should receive it, and that’s what we aim to do, working closely with our education, health and voluntary sector colleagues and partners.

“We know that prevention and early intervention is key to tackling the causes of potential mental health issues.

“That’s why we’re investing £2m across all our schools to ensure we’re acting as early as possible to give our children the best possible start in life, especially amid the extra challenges they continue to face as a result of the pandemic.”

Schools have also been signposting young people and families to local support services such as The Nest, a mental health drop-in centre for young people based in Peckham’s Rye Lane.

It is open to any young person aged eleven and above in Southwark who feels they need extra support for their mental health and wellbeing.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Residents of an Elephant & Castle block have hit out at Southwark Council for a rubbish disposal arrangement that has left them in “a Dickensian crisis for the 21st century”.

Perronet House, on the north-western side of the Elephant & Castle roundabout, has a bin room that residents can put their rubbish into via a chute. The bin room itself is locked and only bin collectors can get in, which a council officer said was for safety reasons.

But some people’s rubbish doesn’t fit in the chute, which was built in the 1970s.

And with no other access to the bin room, some residents have started putting their waste in the bulk waste space, opened in 2013 and originally meant for larger items that needed to be collected separately.

This has led to an overflow of rubbish, residents say, that has attracted foxes and other pests, as well as causing a general health hazard for the people living in the block. With more rubbish around in general, incidents of fly tipping have also increased. These problems have got much worse since the past year’s lockdown, according to residents, as people have stayed at home more and produced more rubbish in the block.

As one resident described the issue to the council, “School children trip over open bags of waste as they step out of their back door. Piles of Amazon cardboard stack up ten feet high against our wooden back door, inviting a fire in the lift shaft. Foxes defecate in the street after tearing bags of rubbish apart and

Some Perronet House residents say that they want the bin system returned to its previous state, when residents each had a key to the bin room so they could take rubbish in themselves, rather than having to drop bags down a chute where they may not fit.

A Southwark Council waste management officer told residents in an email that this could be dangerous because the bin room was not designed with public access in mind. She said that problems could include rubbish falling onto people’s heads from the chute when they came in the room, a possible lack of suitable lighting and even rough sleepers seeking shelter inside the room.

Working out whether some or all of these issues would affect Perronet House would take money that the council does not have at the moment, although the option of putting in measures to stop fly tipping is being looked at, the officer added.

“I do not dispute that the waste arrangements at Perronet are currently presenting a challenge, but the current arrangement is probably the least objectionable of the alternatives,” she said.

This is not the only problem Perronet House residents have had to deal with recently. We reported last month on a single mother of three with sickle cell disease, living in a one-bed flat in the block that has a serious mould infestation.

More ugly scenes in fears of a spike in thefts and park by the Mayor robberies as lockdown eases of London’s building Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Rotherhithe residents have complained of a spate of thefts and robberies in recent months as lockdown lifts and more people begin mixing outside again.

Met Police figures show that crime in the area dipped markedly in the first stage of Covid-19 restrictions in April last year, before rising again in the summer and autumn as the government relaxed rules on socialising and working with others.

Numbers began dropping again in November as the new lockdown came in, before starting to rise again in February. Figures for March, the most recent that are publicly available, show a significant increase, although still below the two-year average for the area.

Rotherhithe’s crime rate is well above the average for Southwark and London as a whole. In March there were eleven crimes committed per 1,000 residents in the area, compared to eight in Southwark and seven in the capital more broadly.

The most common crime across the past two years has been theft, with more than 1,200 reported incidents.

Local resident Charley Miller said she had witnessed two muggings in the

area in the past two months, with the culprits seeming to be teenage boys.

“It’s a joke,” she said. “The kids know they are getting away with it, they know it’s easy money so they just do it the whole time… We need more CCTV to catch them.”

Charley started up a popular local Facebook group to try and tackle the problem about two years ago. The group aims to promote social cohesion and community values.

“But I’m worried that some of the kids are going to steal from the wrong person and get into serious trouble,” she added.

A lot of the theft takes place in the area around Canada Water tube station and the Surrey Quays shopping centre.

The area is going to be hit with an influx of new residents in the years to come as part of the Canada Water Masterplan, a huge new development that is expected to add 3,000 new homes.

Charley said: “This problem is only going to get worse with all the new people coming in. These kids are just going to see easy money.”

Local police say they are doing their best to tackle the problem. Godwin Perrot, the sergeant for the Rotherhithe community policing (“safer neighbourhoods”) team told the News that incidents of robbery - stealing that involves some kind of violent attack or threat - had gone down recently.

Robbery is higher-priority and often involves some kind of face-to-face confrontation, so culprits can be easier for victims to identify.

“Snatching” incidents - such as when someone cycles past and steals a phone from the victim’s hand, have remained high, Perrot said. “We are aware of the issue and we are putting measures in place to try and stop it,” he added.

One of the areas that police target is the onward market for these phones.

Every so often officers will raid mobile phone stalls on the street, which often buy up stolen devices, Sergeant Perrot said. They also have an agreement with local pawn shops to recover stolen phones.

The market for stolen phones took a hit a few years ago when Apple changed the operating system on iPhones, which made it much harder to break into stolen devices and wipe the memory, Sergeant Perrot added.

Unfortunately criminals appear to have got around this problem and the market has recovered.

Sergeant Perrot said that as lockdown continues to ease, shoplifting may increase again after dropping considerably when non-essential shops were forced to close. Worryingly, going by the statistics, thefts seem likely to increase more generally as restrictions continue to ease, despite the best efforts of the Rotherhithe safer neighbourhood team.

Police officer is knocked out and four arrested for violent offences in park

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Ugly scenes unfolded yet again at Potters Fields Park near London Bridge over the bank holiday weekend, with a police officer knocked out and four people arrested for violent offences.

Officers were patrolling the popular park on Saturday, May 1, which has seen several incidents of violence, drug dealing and other anti-social behaviour for weeks, going back to the Easter weekend.

Someone was assaulted in the park and police detained several people they suspected of taking part in the attack.

In the ensuing disorder, a police officer was knocked out cold and needed to be taken to hospital. A member of the public also needed medical attention, while four other officers had minor injuries.

Four people were arrested on the scene on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, racially aggravated public order and assault of emergency workers.

A dispersal order, allowing officers to break up gatherings more easily, was still in place for the area until 7am on Tuesday morning (May 4). The area

stretches from Waterloo Bridge, George Row up to Stamford Street, Southwark Street, St Thomas Street, Crucifix lane, Druid Street George Row and Abbey Street.

Shad Thames locals told the News the incident showed more police were needed in the area at weekends as lockdown continues to ease.

We have reported in recent weeks that many of the hundreds of people who have been causing locals such misery on the weekends are from Essex, and have been organising their gatherings on Snapchat.

Meetings organised in this way are often harder for the police to predict and prevent because Snapchat messages disappear after a short time – unlike posts on other social media websites. It is unclear if the culprits on Saturday were from similar groups.

Last month a young man was stabbed near City Hall in the early hours of Sunday April 11. There was also a brawl near the McDonald’s on Tooley Street in which a police officer was injured and a police vehicle was damaged.

Recent weekends had seemed to be quieter, as dozens of officers were transported to the area in a bid to prevent similar scenes of violence.

Battle to save Peckham green space from new council homes Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Protesters gathered in Peckham on Saturday to show their opposition to the loss of local green space from a planned council development.

Southwark Council has planning permission to build 168 new homes on the “Flaxyard site” between Sumner Avenue, Jocelyn Street and Melon Road, just to the north of Peckham Road. Some 96 of these would be for social rent, with another 24 put up for shared ownership. The tenure of the other 48 is unclear from planning documents, but they could be for private sale or rented at market rates.

The development includes three new buildings, which will go on the green space. Two would be between four and six storeys high and another would have four floors. A fourth building will be converted from offices into flats. There will also be space for shops, restaurants and pubs in the development.

The people who gathered on the grassy area slated for building on Saturday, May 7, said they were worried about losing the green space that has been so important to them in lockdown.

Gabriel Monade, who has lived in a nearby estate for about 20 years, said: “When you go from having a green space outside your door for years to then having a six-storey building in front of your window, that’s a really big change… this is the start of something, we’re getting more people

involved.”

Another member of the group added: “This is one of the most egregious examples of Southwark’s contempt for its residents and nature.

Peckham is losing a massive open space for what?... We will save this park.”

The council has promised to build 11,000 socially rented homes by 2043 in a bid to tackle the housing crisis in the borough. Some 13,000 households are waiting for affordable housing in the borough and 3,300 are in temporary accommodation Permission for the new Peckham development was originally granted in March 2018 and subsequent minor changes to plans have been approved in the years since then. Building work is due to begin in August this year.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council housing, said: “Southwark Council will be developing 100% affordable housing on the Flaxyard site to provide essential new council homes for our residents. We will be constructing four buildings to deliver 120 much-needed homes (of which 96 will be council homes for social rent and 24 homes for shared ownership).

“One of the blocks will house a ground floor commercial unit, and we could provide a new shop along Peckham High Street. We will also be building a new children’s play area.

“We have worked closely with residents and stakeholders in the area to create the designs and we are confident that the development will enhance the surrounding area as well as providing high-quality new council homes for local people. The works are due to start in early August 2021.”

Demonstrations promised as council reviews low emission neighbourhoods in Dulwich

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Dulwich residents have held a protest against the closure of the Dulwich Village junction as part of the London-wide move to cut air pollution.

People living and working in the area gathered on Bank Holiday Monday, May 3, to coincide with a meeting held by local ward councillors Margy Newens and Richard Leeming.

Demonstrators say they kept numbers deliberately low to stay on the right side of rules on public gatherings, but numbers will increase in future protests as lockdown continues to ease.

Among groups represented were One Dulwich, who have over 1,900 supporters, East Dulwich Grove Residents’ Group, Dulwich Village traders, Melbourne Grove Vale Traders Against Closures, and residents from Turney Road, Dulwich Village, Court Lane, Woodwarde Road and Dovercourt Road.

A spokesperson from the Dulwich Alliance, which brings together these groups, said: “We were able to put our point across that 24/7 closures stop

emergency vehicles getting through, discriminate against elderly, vulnerable and mobility-impaired residents, and push traffic and pollution on to residents and schools in neighbouring streets.

“We want a solution that balances the needs of the whole community, both young and old, and which doesn’t empty some streets of traffic by increasing congestion on others.”

Southwark Council issued more than 22,400 fines between January 11 and February 28 this year to people driving in the Dulwich Village low traffic neighbourhood (LTN). If all of these had been paid early at £65, then the council netted a total of £1,457,560 in just seven weeks.

Researchers have come to different conclusions on the effect of LTNs on pollution. A November 2020 study by scientists at the University of Westminster found that LTNs do not disproportionately benefit richer people, as is sometimes claimed. But a study by Wandsworth Council last December and reported by the Daily Telegraph found that toxic gases increased on main roads as congestion rose.

Southwark Council is due to launch an eight-week review of the Dulwich lowtraffic neighbourhood (LTN) this month.

The review will gather the opinions of residents and people living nearby on the scheme.

Other measures will include online meetings in May and June, reviewing previous feedback, counting vehicle numbers in the area before and after the road closure, looking into bike and pedestrian movements, and monitoring local congestion and air quality.

The demonstration came after Southwark Council made changes to another LTN further north in the borough.

Changes to the Great Suffolk Street LTN were made at the end of last month to remedy “a disproportionate effect on journey times for local residents” caused by the closures, after discussions with ward councillors and emergency services.

Changes include allowing access to Webber Street from Great Suffolk Street and Southwark Bridge Road and removing the no entry rules on Sawyer Street and Southwark Bridge Road and on Lant Street and Southwark Bridge Road.

Planning officers rejected the proposal at the end of April, citing light pollution for people living in neighbouring flats.

Three years on: new police appeal and £20,000 reward

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Police are offering a £20,000 reward for any information that helps convict the killer of a teenage boy, on the third anniversary of his death in Kennington.

Rhyhiem Ainsworth Barton, 17, is believed to have been with a group of friends when he was shot on the corner of John Ruskin Street and Camberwell New Road on May 5, 2018.

Two people were arrested on suspicion of murdering the budding rapper from the Brandon Estate in June 2018 – but no one has been charged three years on from the killing.

Now officers are offering £20,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of Rhyhiem’s killer.

Police are particularly interested in a grey BMW Series 2 Gran Tourer with the registration WT17 CFK that was seen on CCTV around the time of the shooting.

Officers think this was the car that the suspects used to make their way to and from the area.

The licence plates at the time of the murder were not real and the true registration should have been BP17 YVV. The car was stolen in Essex on December 23 2017. Its plates were later replaced.

Detective Inspector Jo Sidaway, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “Rhyhiem’s murder shocked and angered people across London. We are determined to identify and bring to justice those responsible, no matter how long it takes.

“We are confident that this grey BMW Series 2 Gran Tourer was used by the gunman. We know it was stolen from Essex and that it was being used on

false plates up to and beyond the date Rhyhiem was murdered. I am appealing to the public to assist us in identifying who was using this vehicle and where it was being kept.

“Did you see it parked in your street?

Did you notice it left in a car park? Did you see someone putting it in a garage?

Any information, no matter how small, could make the difference.

“I also want to appeal to Rhyhiem’s friends. I’m sure that some of you will know who pulled the trigger. I also know that some of you may not have the most positive view of the police and may feel that coming forward with information is a betrayal or a sign of weakness. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Kennington Crystal Meth dealer jailed after police take down ‘key player’ in drug trade DEALER Michael Harkin

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A Crystal Meth dealer from Kennington has been jailed after a police sting that took down one of the ‘key players’ in the illicit trade.

Thirty-two year old Michael Harkin was sentenced last Friday, May 7, along with Mehrab Akbari, a 45-year-old from Brentford who supplied him with the drugs.

Harkin was handed six-and-a-half years after pleading guilty at Inner London Crown Court court in October 2020. Akbari, who also pleaded guilty, was sentenced to eight years and three months.

The pair were caught after a police sting codenamed Operation Caktonn identified them as the suppliers and dealers of ‘large amounts’ of Crystal Meth across London from March 2019 onwards.

Officers observed Harkin holding ‘meets’ in cars and on the street with ‘multiple different males’ for short periods of time, leading officers to suspect illegal transactions were taking place.

At the same time, Akbari was seen visiting a storage unit in Chiswick on a daily basis, which investigators quickly identified as a potential drug stash.

After seeing Akbari travel by taxi to Kennington to meet with Harkin, officers make the link that Akbari was the supplier and Harkin was the dealer on the ground.

Officers arrested Akbari on April 23, last year inside the storage unit, where around two kilos of crystal meth, with a street value of up to £278,720 were found inside a locker.

A few weeks later, on May 13, Harkin was arrested at his home address in Southwark, where half a kilo of crystal meth, cocaine, MDMA, GBL, cannabis, psychedelics, depressants, scales and £10,155 in cash were also seized.

Messages were later found on Akbari’s mobile phone showing he was a ‘key player’ in Crystal Meth supply in London.

Police say he personally had so much control over the black market trade that he was able to increase prices during lockdown when the drug was in shorter supply.

Investigating officer, PC James Taylor, from the Met’s specialist crime for south London team said: “This sentencing comes as a result of a long and complex proactive investigation targeting the supply of crystal meth and associated drugs, primarily in the ChemSex scene.

"We know that in the long term, methamphetamine use can cause irreversible harm to users including damaged blood vessels in the brain that can cause strokes or an irregular heartbeat that can, in turn, cause cardiovascular collapse and liver, kidney and lung damage.

“Users may suffer brain damage, including memory loss and an increasing

"Aside from the injury caused to users, the supply of this Class A drug is linked to violence which we see on London’s streets – including assault and homicide as suppliers and dealers dispute supply and territory.

“This illegal enterprise is ruining people’s lives whether they use the drug or not. I hope this sentencing will act as a deterrent to those who would seek to profit from the sale of these harmful drugs and would encourage the public that if you have any information about drug dealing and especially those within the higher tiers of supply, please contact the police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Southwark had second highest call out for air ambulance last year

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark last year was the second highest borough for call outs for London’s two helicopter air ambulances - and now the charity is facing a huge funding gap as they have been unable to fundraising effectively during the pandemic.

The air ambulances, sent to help people in critical were called out 76 times in Southwark last year, three fewer than Haringey, with 79 callouts.

Attending a total of 1,494 incidents last year across the entire capital stabbings and shootings made up more than a third, at 529 incidents. Next were road traffic collisions, at 371 incidents, or a quarter of all callouts. There were 330 falls from height that required an air ambulance in 2020. Helicopters also attended 264 other events in London

last year, including industrial accidents, rail incidents and drownings.

But the air ambulance charity is facing a £6 million funding shortfall over the next five years, as many of its fundraising events were halted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Both its annual abseiling event, which raised £132,000 in 2019, and the London Marathon, which had been expected to raise about £82,000, were cancelled last year.

“When London calls, our teams are on the front line, racing across the city to reach the capital’s most critically injured patients in need of life-saving care at the scene,” said the charity’s chief executive Jonathan Jenkins. “We need the support of Londoners now more than ever to keep our service flying.”

The air ambulance takes a doctor and a paramedic to each incident and can get to anywhere in London within eleven minutes. Bart’s NHS Trust gives

some funding and lends doctors to the service. The helicopters also take off and land from its helipad. The London Ambulance Service provides paramedics and emergency care infrastructure.

Dr Tom Hurst, the London air ambulance service’s medical director, said; “Over 32 years the service has treated over 40,000 patients and we have learnt that trauma never stops.

So as a service we were adamant that even during lockdown, it was our duty to make sure we were available to treat patients when their life was on the line.

Florence Nightingale museum saved from closure Although it will only open once a month

The museum announced it had to shut after the pandemic straved it off income.

The open weekends, which will start on June 5, have been made possible through a grant from the government’s Culture Recovery Fund. They will run for the rest of the year.

Exercise classes return to Southwark’s leisure centres

Indoor group exercise has been given the greenlight to start up again from Monday, May 17.

Operator Everyone Active, which runs Camberwell Leisure Centre; Dulwich Leisure Centre; The Castle; Peckham Pulse; Seven Islands; Surrey Docks Fitness and Watersports and Southwark Athletics Centre says its ‘strict operational measures’ will remain in place to keep gymgoers safe.

These include smaller class sizes to ensure social distancing.

Mark Basker, regional contract manager at Everyone Active, said: “We are delighted to be able to safely resume group exercise classes in our centres.

“Aside from the obvious physical

benefits, this will be a huge boost for mental health and wellbeing in Southwark and comes at an apt time following the start of Mental Health Awareness Week.

“Many of our customers thrive on the social element of exercise, not just for motivational reasons but also because they enjoy seeing friendly faces in a familiar environment.

“With social contact having been limited over the past year, the ability to mix safely with other members of the community will be appreciated by many.

sledgehammer taken to bermondsey Cornerstone

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey sculpture that was created by the local community was vandalised earlier this month.

Someone appeared to have taken a sledgehammer to the right hand side of the Cornerstone, which was only put up late last year, overnight on May 2.

Artist Austin Emery, who used to live in Bermondsey, and Lib Dem Cllr Damian O’Brien, who represents the area on Southwark Council, were among the people who arranged for the pieces that were knocked up to be carefully cleared up and reattached to the whole.

The Cornerstone uses more than 100 stone carvings created by residents and locals on the nearby Whites Grounds

Estate.

Emery said last year: “I love the idea of people who would not otherwise normally do this, coming together and getting the chance to pick up a chisel and mallet to carve something of themselves into the stone, and for their carving to become a permanent part of the fabric and landscape of London, which will outlive all of us,” he said.

“This feeling of connection to the material of our place is something that stonemasons and carvers have always enjoyed.”

He secured 55.2 per cent of the popular vote, after entering a run-off with Conservative rival Shaun Bailey, when neither managed to secure a majority in the first round of voting.

The Green Party’s Sian Berry came third, while the Liberal Democrats’ Luisa Porritt was fourth and lost her deposit after failing to win more than five per cent of the vote.

Labour also retains its Lambeth & Southwark seat. Marina Ahmad succeeds Florence Eshalomi, who became MP for Vauxhall in 2019.

Marina Ahmad won 49 per cent of the vote.

People in Southwark & Labour also voted overwhelming for Sadiq Khan to stay on, with 51 per cent electing him as mayor and 20 per cent for Shaun Bailey.

Sadiq Khan was seen as the favourite and some pollsters even

predicted he would win more than half of the first-round votes.

But Shaun Bailey, who received 44.8 per cent of the first and second-round votes, increased the Conservative vote share by 1.6 per cent.

He said he had been “written off” by pollsters, journalists and other politicians. “But Londoners didn’t write me off,” he added.

He congratulated Sadiq Khan but said he hoped the re-elected mayor wouldn’t “blame everything on the government”.

While Sadiq Khan failed to reach his record-setting vote total of 2016, he did win with a 228,000-vote majority.

He said: “I will always be a mayor for all Londoners, working to improve the lives of every single person in this city.

“The results of the elections around the UK shows our country, and even our city, remains deeply divided.

“The scars of Brexit have yet to heal. A crude culture war is pushing us further apart.

“Economic inequality is getting worse both within London and in different parts of our country.

“As we seek to confront the enormity of the challenge ahead, and as we endeavour to rebuild from this pandemic, we must use this moment of national recovery to heal those damaging divisions.”

The votes

On the Assembly vote Labour’s Marina Ahmad received 91,949 votes, which was 49 per cent of the vote.

The Greens’ Claire Sheppard came second with 36,933, 20 per cent of the vote. The Conservative’s Hannah Ginnett was third with 30,855, 16 per cent of the vote. The remaining votes saw the Liberal Democrats get 11 per cent, the Reform UK candidate and the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition candidate both picked up just 2 per cent of the vote.

While a comfortable majority, the Labour vote was down by nearly 5,000 votes (4,997) compared to the 2016 election. The Conservative vote was also down by nearly 4,000 votes (3,848). Only the Greens saw a shift upwards with over 11,000 more votes (11,140) compared to

last time.

And according to the figures people in Southwark and Lambeth also voted for Sadiq Khan to stay on as mayor with 51 per cent of the vote.

rejected votes: ‘Confusing ballot’

A “confusing” ballot paper – it is being blamed for a record number of rejected ballots in the mayor of London election.

56,358 of the first preference votes were rejected - roughly five per cent of the total votes counted.

This year’s figure is just short of the current record for the highest number of rejected ballots in the

2004 mayoral election, when 56,874 first preference votes were rejected, roughly three per cent of the total votes that year.

Official figures show 47,091 votes were rejected this year because too many votes were cast.

This year saw a record-breaking twenty candidates stand to become mayor of London.

Elephant & Castle man came 17th out of 20

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk An Elephant & Castle-born candidate for last week’s London mayoral has spoken about the problems facing left-wing politics in the UK.

Steven Kelleher, who grew up on the Rockingham Estate, stood for mayor for the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SDP) and came 17th out of 20 candidates after the first round of voting with 8,764 votes. He got 28,836 second preference votes.

But despite getting just 0.3% of first round votes and placing well below candidates like Count Binface, YouTuber Niko Omilana and actor Laurence Fox, Kelleher was bullish about his party’s prospects as he spoke to the News after the election.

“When I saw the Hartlepool result I thought ‘oh no’”, he said, referring to the Labour Party’s loss of the north-eastern by-election to the Conservatives. “We’re going to end up with something really low like 2,000 votes. That would have been awful.

And in the end even though 17th out

of 20 doesn’t sound great… that was our first campaign in 30 years, we’re happy. We’ve learned a lot.

“We now know you either have to be extremely rich or extremely famous to have a hope. As we’re not rich… we have to think ‘how on earth do we raise our profile, build our relationships’.”

Kelleher said the party was thinking about starting its own YouTube channel, to get direct access to voters rather than relying on coverage in traditional media - which was distinctly lacking in the recent mayoral race.

The SDP was formed in 1990 and traces its roots to the party of the same name that split off from Labour in 1981. Kelleher said the goal for the party was to influence Labour, mirroring the effect that some say Ukip and the Brexit (now Reform) party has had on the Conservatives in recent years.

Kelleher, whose campaign pledges included building 50,000 homes that could not be sold off during the tenancy and focusing police on violent crime, added that he wanted Labour to focus less on identity and more on

real-life issues that people face.

“This is probably the low point for Labour - probably - but if they carry on with the mistakes they’re making it’s actually the beginning of the end of Labour. They are lost at the moment - they’re looking through lenses of identity and lenses of division. It cannot succeed. It will only get worse.”

Kelleher, whose day job is running a recruitment company, said he now wanted to focus on creating a new generation of Social Democratic Party candidates for local councils and other public offices. He added that the party would be meritocratic. “If all the best people just happen to be white men, we’re not going to shy away from that”.

Kelleher, whose parents are from Ireland, grew up on the Rockingham Estate and elsewhere in the area for some of his childhood, before moving to another council estate in the Oval area. He passed the 11+ exam and went to a grammar school in Battersea, before going on to university.

“They say there were signs saying ‘no blacks, no dogs no Irish’,” he added.

“But on our estate it was just blacks, dogs and Irish!”

has been attending the clinic with her 16-year-old son who was diagnosed with Klinefelter syndrome when he was four years old.

Alison said: “It’s great to finally get support from healthcare professionals from different disciplines who fully understand Klinefelter syndrome and how it affects my son. Thanks to the clinic my son has been able to get psychological support for the first time ever.”

Four artists have been shortlisted to create a monument to the arrival of the UK’s first large Caribbean population at Waterloo station.

The monument to the ‘Windrush generation’ - named after the ship that carried some of the new arrivals in 1948 - was announced by then-Prime Minister Theresa May in 2019.

The four artists shortlisted are sculptor and painter Basil Watson, multimedia artists Jeanette Ehlers and Valda Jackson and sculptor, photographer and filmmaker Thomas J Price. All four are Caribbean or have roots in the region.

Jackson and Watson’s families were part of the Windrush generation.

Actress and TV presenter Baroness Floella Benjamin is chair of the Windrush Commemoration committee, which announced the shortlist.

“We are entering a really exciting stage of this project with the realisation of the monument just round the corner,” she

said.

“Our shortlist contains a vibrant mix of talented artists, all with lived experience of the Windrush legacy and we will now see proposals developed into a vision for the national monument to the Windrush Generation in London Waterloo station.

“The monument will be a permanent place of reflection and inspiration for Caribbean communities and the wider public, especially children. It will act as a symbolic link to our past, and a permanent reminder of our shared history and heritage for generations to come.”

May announced the monument in the wake of the Windrush scandal in 2018, when an investigation found that dozens of Caribbean people who had come to the UK after the Second World War had been deported or denied vital medical treatment and legal rights by the British government in recent years.

A 2020 review found that the Home

Office had displayed “thoughtlessness and ignorance” in its treatment of these people. Many of those affected by the scandal have still not got the compensation they were told they were eligible for.

Evelina London Children’s Hospital is planning a new building to help it treatment more sick children and cut waiting times.

The hospital, next to St Thomas’ on Lambeth Palace Road, hopes to add the new building next door. Plans will be submitted over the summer after consulting with local people. Lambeth Council is likely to make a decision in the autumn, hospital chiefs said.

“We got some really valuable feedback from our patients, families and people in our local areas, ranging from where we locate the main entrance of the building to the importance of

sustainability,” said Emma Gadsby, who will be head of nursing in the new building.

“At Evelina London, we put patients and families at the heart of everything we do and it’s vital that they are involved in shaping our plans. We look forward to working with them on the next stage of our design process.”

Evelina said the number of children treated in London and the south-east has doubled since it opened in 2005, meaning a new facility is sorely needed.

The new plans include a centre for day surgery, which would open in 2022 and provide dedicated space to provide 2,300 surgeries per year.

Schoolkids explore their moods

Southwark schoolkids have taken part in a citywide art project to track and explore children’s moods in coronavirus lockdown.

Students from years 1-12 took part, from ten schools across London.

“We felt it was important that children developed the vocabulary to be able to share and understand their emotions at this time, as well as having the opportunity to explore this creatively,” said Emma Fell, art coordinator at Redriff Primary

School. in Rotherhithe “The children’s work speaks volumes about the range of emotions they have been through during the pandemic, and it really is a testament to how resilient they have been.”

Bermondsey nursery needs £8,000 for a new playground

A Bermondsey nursery is fundraising for a new playground.

Little Acorns Day Nursery, on Drummond Road, is looking to raise £8,000 for the playground at the front of the building.

“The playground has really helped the kids through the pandemic,” said manager Jacky Smith. “It’s given them a safe space - it’s not where everyone was mixing, it was just our nursery. It was a safe runaround space - there were parents that were working so there were children that were still attending. But it’s a bit low on care at the moment.

We had the floor done about five or six years ago so the flooring is starting to crack, the decking is becoming loose and we’re just going to get it all redone so it continues to be a nice area for children to grow, learn and develop.”

The work is due to take place in June if Little Acorns can get the money it needs. The nursery has already had some funding from Southwark Council.

‘revolutionary’ way to treat breast cancer

Guy’s is the first NHS hospital to offer a “revolutionary” new way of treating breast cancer patients.

Normally when people with breast cancer are given radiotherapy, they are tattooed with three small dots to make sure the treatment is targeted. This is important because if the radiation is delivered to the wrong place it can be ineffective and cause unwanted side-effects.

But it also leaves patients with a reminder of their illness permanently marked on their body, which some find distressing.

A new highly-sensitive tracking system now projects a red light from three camera pods onto the place that needs treatment. If the patient moves at all, the radiation shuts off.

About 1,000 people a year at Guy’s and St Thomas’ will be treated using this new system.

Guy’s specialist cancer centre was the first to test it out.

South Londoner Jane Markcoons, 60, said: “I was really pleased to find out I wouldn’t be left with tattoo marks as the last thing you want is to be reminded of your cancer all the time.

When lots of women have radiotherapy they have already undergone chemotherapy and may be struggling with hair loss and other side effects so this is one less thing to worry about.

“I was shown respect and kindness by every one of the staff. At a very scary time, when I didn’t know what to expect, I was treated as a person and not a condition or disease.”

Deirdre Dobson, deputy head of radiotherapy at Guy’s and St Thomas’, added: “Having a permanent reminder of their cancer treatment and what they’ve had to go through can be very distressing for some of our patients.

This new technique helps them to leave their radiotherapy in the past and will really benefit our patients’ psychological wellbeing.

“As breast cancer survival rates improve it’s more important than ever that we don’t just treat the disease but help our patients move on with their lives as well. We are continuing to develop our techniques using this technology to investigate enhancing experience for more patient groups.”

Blackfriars free meals need more help A service that provides food for elderly people in Southwark has raised enough money for a new freezer after its last one broke.

Blackfriars Settlement, on Rushworth Street, runs four lunch clubs per week, feeding more than 85 people. The group also delivers food to 20 people who cannot come to the free meals.

In the first coronavirus lockdown the group also delivered 3,000 meals as part of its Positive Ageing service.

But a few weeks ago the Blackfriars Settlement commercial freezer broke, where it normally keeps the large quantities of food that it gets as donations. Without the freezer, it would be very difficult to continue feeding the people the group helps every week and keep food waste low.

Rubbish in Southwark is a recurring problem that has been a blight for residents during the lockdown

e reported on two stories this week about rubbish piling up around the borough, and residents’ varied responses.

In Perronet House in Elephant & Castle, rubbish is accumulating outside because of a structural problem inside - described by Southwark Council as “challenging” and by residents as “Dickensian”.

Meanwhile people living in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe have taken it upon themselves to clear up rubbish they see strewn on the streets, forming a group called The Litterati. Others elsewhere in Bermondsey have reported flytipping problems.

This has been a recurring issue that we have reported repeatedly in recent months. Rubbish collections were often delayed or missed due to the pandemic. The council says bin collections are generally back to normal, although with some delays.

Current affairs questions are often framed as a conflict between the responsibilities of individual people versus broader structures and institutions. Think of the debate launched by Marcus Rashford last year over the government’s provision of free meals for kids.

But this framing is too simple. We need both individual and structural action for society to work, as the two stories we reported this week show.

Clearly there is quite literally a structural problem at Perronet House. The complaints there stem from the fact that the chute that takes rubbish from residents to the bin room was built for a time when we produced less household waste.

To get around this and problems like it we need the council to act creatively - in response to repeated complaints from residents - instead of letting rubbish pile up and rot, to the detriment of everyone.

But in the meantime we also need people like the Litterati - civic-minded groups willing to roll up their sleeves and get the streets clean.

A broader question is whether we should be trying to throw fewer things away in general.

But it seems clear that as our population continues to grow, so will the amount of rubbish we produce.

We will need individuals and institutions to step up to make sure our streets stay clean.

Celebrating female art and artists In a bid to highlight the phenomenal work of female artists for the masses, independent curator, Gita Joshi, has partnered with the team behind South London Women Artists (SLWArtists) to host a virtual exhibition. The online showcase, titled She answered, “Art”, launched on 14 April and includes over 40 pieces created by the critically acclaimed group of visual artists.

The She answered, “Art” exhibition was created with the core belief that art is often the answer to everything in mind, and each artist within SLWArtists submitted pieces that expressed their ‘art answer’. The pieces together form a collective articulation of diverse voices, showing how differently female visual artists honour their creative calling through art making.

These are just some of the SLWArtists in this virtual exhibition: Maria Beddoes: “I am experimenting with ideas of secular iconography, finding the monumental in the everyday.”

Sam Haynes is “engaging local communities with the belief that art has the power to bridge divides within society.”

Natalie Webb “strives to capture

the essence of her subjects, with economy of line.”

Ky Lewis wants “to express and present not just a recorded image but also an image imbued with the emotion felt.”

The London Borough of Southwark (Charged-For Parking Places) (Map-based) Order 202* The London Borough of Southwark (Free Parking Places, Loading Places and Waiting, Loading and Stopping Restrictions) (Map-based) Order 202* 1. Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that it proposes to make the above Orders under sections 6, 45, 46, 49, 63 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

NOTE: there would be no change to the existing layout, type or amount of provision of on-street charged-for parking places, on-street free parking places, loading places and waiting, loading and stopping restrictions, other than as detailed above, to the terms of use thereof (and any applicable fees and charges) as is currently published online by the Council, as a result of the making of these Orders.

3.Any trial schemes enacted through ongoing Experimental Traffic Orders would continue to progress through to the appropriate evaluation and completion of each scheme.

4. The above Orders would supersede the provisions and replace the London Borough of Southwark (Parking places) (Map-based) (No. 1) Order 2021 and the London Borough of Southwark (Waiting, Loading and Stopping Restrictions) (Map-based) (No. 1) Order 2021, as made on 25 February 2021.

5. DAMP PATCHES on the outfield that delayed the start of play for nearly three hours, coming on top of the loss of the entire third day to the weather, resulted in Surrey settling for a draw at Leicestershire in their LV Insurance County Championship match at The UptonSteel County Ground last weekend.

After Surrey resumed on 146 without loss, Leicestershire took all ten of the visitors’ first innings wickets for a further 178 runs.

Seamer Chris Wright led the way by picking up 5-60, with left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson taking three wickets as the pitch began to offer turn.

Mark Stoneman’s fine century, made from 208 deliveries, ensured Surrey picked up three batting bonus points.

There had been speculation that with Surrey going into the final day 350 adrift on first innings, agreement might be reached regarding Leicestershire setting the visitors a target.

By the time umpires Ian Gould and Richard Illingworth decided play could start, however, there was not enough time for that to be a realistic proposition.

Rory Burns quickly became Wright’s first victim, top edging an attempted pull high to midwicket, before Hashim Amla’s full-blooded cut at Ben Mike was beautifully caught by Colin Ackermann at gully.

Ollie Pope, going for quick runs, should have been stumped off Parkinson before he was bowled by Wright before the spinner produced a beautiful delivery that turned off middle and hit the top of Ben Foakes’ off-stump.

Jamie Smith and Jordan Clark were bowled by Wright deliveries that kept low, and Ackermann, standing wide at slip, made another fine catch to see the back of Stoneman, cutting at Wright.

Jamie Overton turned a long hop straight to midwicket, Reece Topley skied an attempted straight hit to cover and Rikki Clarke was bowled by Ed Barnes – the Yorkshireman’s first wicket for Leicestershire – to bring the innings and match to a close.

“It’s been a while since I went into three figures, so pleasing from a personal point of view because I’ve felt as though I’ve been playing as well as I ever have without getting the scores to reflect that,” Stoneman said.

“It was unfortunate that the weather spoiled what would have been a very good four day game. As it was we set out to get as many bonus points as we could. Rory and I set a good platform and we lost wickets as we chased quick runs, which can happen.”

Millwall have had a run of games against higher-tier sides

Two goals from Shannan Drewe – including a superb long-range freekick – and a strike from Abbey Dell put Millwall 3-1 in front after they had fallen behind.

But the Women’s Super League academy side recovered to claim a draw.

“I think towards the end you could see we were very tired, whereas they probably used that to their advantage slightly, as they had a lot of possession at the end of the game. I think that’s based on our fitness letting us down.”

Miller has struggled for game-time due to the impressive form of Carter.

“It’s always hard [being no.2], we have conversations with Larissa about minutes and today she got to go on, which was great to see,” Whitmore said. “There’s always that added pressure when it is such a close game and a tight game, but she made some superb saves and we can’t fault that.”

As would be expected of a MillwallWest Ham derby – and despite the game being a friendly behind closed doors – there was plenty of niggle.

Whitmore added: “Towards the end it was very heated, as it was a very tight, close game, but I’m very proud with how the girls conducted themselves. They didn’t get caught up in any of the heated moments, they did their challenges and parted which was good to see, and that’s a positive

Heavy overnight rain, followed by morning drizzle, delayed the start by 90 minutes, causing the 50 over match to be reduced to 41 overs per side.

Number 6 batsman Javier Frost then launched a counter-attack against the spinners, adding 20 for the ninth wicket with Harry Chappell, who faced five balls without scoring before falling to Lodwick, and 42 for the last wicket with Greg Nielsen, who contributed 11 before being bowled by Alex Gledhill.

Frost remained undefeated with 48,

scored off 37 balls and containing four sixes. He had contributed 41 of the 62 runs added for the last two wickets.

Frost then opened the bowling but was unable to make a breakthrough as Chris Purshouse and newcomer Paul Selvey-Clinton added 28 in 10.4 overs for the first wicket, aided by several wides from Frost. Purshouse was the main scorer with 18 off 44 balls before being bowled by Chappell.

Selvey-Clinton was joined by Frankie Brown, but the pair found scoring difficult against Chappell and skipper Clint McCabe, who bowled 17 overs between them for 41 runs. They had just started to accelerate and had taken their partnership to 68 for the second wicket in 21.1 overs when Selvey-Clinton fell to Frost for 38, having faced 76 balls.

Millwall’s run of recent games against higher-tier sides including Kent Football United, Billericay Town Ladies Reserves, Aylesford and the Hammers has fired the ambition of the sixth-tier Lionesses.

“We want to play at a higher level, of course we do,” Whitmore said. “[Assistant manager] Alex Russell and I have discussed that we want to recruit players that when we get to that next level, it’s not a shock to the system for them when they play there.

“So for us, we are learning just as much as they are by playing these bigger names and I think it’s a good opportunity for us to test ourselves as managers, and to test the players as well.”

By Lucas Ball at St Andrew’s sport@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL SAVED possibly their worst defensive display of the 202021 campaign for the final day as they lost 6-1 to Coventry City in the hosts’ last game at St Andrew’s.

The Lions were well and truly outclassed

by Mark Robins’ Sky Blues, shipping six in a league game for the first time since Boxing Day 2014 under Ian Holloway against Norwich City.

Defensive organisation had been a strong suit for much of the season, but any cohesion deserted Millwall last Saturday as they were cut open at will, conceding a total of 21 shots.

Gary Rowett’s side had chances to level the game after falling behind to Jordan Shipley’s goal, but Tom Bradshaw could only steer a back-heeled effort onto the post from Jed Wallace’s cross before Mason Bennett mis-timed his jump and squandered a good opportunity from a free header.

Coventry made Millwall rue those missed chances on the stroke of half-time as Kyle McFadzean netted from a corner.

It was McFadzean’s own goal that should have swung the momentum back in Millwall’s favour inside the first ten minutes of the second half, but the visitors didn’t capitalise and conceded three goals in eight

minutes to kill their hopes of a turnaround.

First, Dom Hyam scored from close range after Maikel Kieftenbeld blocked Michael Rose’s header on the line, before Callum O’Hare got on the scoresheet, bringing down Shipley’s ball and smashing past Bartosz Bialkowski.

Loanee Matty James netted the fifth after the Pole parried an effort to him to finish from close range, before Tyler Walker compounded the Lions’ misery with six minutes left from a James corner.

There were other chances for Coventry, too. Mahlon Romeo, Jake Cooper and Scott Malone all made crucial blocks or last-ditch tackles in the first half to stop shooting opportunities. Bialkowski made at least two good saves in the second half to deny Max Biamou from netting and preventing Shaun Williams from scoring an own goal.

On another day, the Lions could have conceded ten - and that is no exaggeration.

And all of that after the home side had lost two players to injury in the first half.

Coventry played well, of course, but their job was made much easier by the visitors’ midfield being almost invisible from a defensive perspective and the likes of George Evans rarely being in the right defensive positions.

Evans was often dragged across to uncomfortable areas and lost a number of key aerial battles, continuing his recent run of poor form.

He will be one of a number of players who will benefit from a longer rest this summer, and Rowett sees him as a midfielder rather than a defender.

It would be unfair to single out Evans, as this was a team collapse and with his side 2-0 down at the break Rowett made three substitutions, which told the story of how unhappy he was with the side that started.

This defeat only underlined what we already know about this Millwall team.

They aren’t clinical enough, they’re much better in the 5-3-2 system than the 5-2-3 and there isn’t enough depth in certain areas.

While the wasted chances in attack shouldn’t be the main concern after Saturday’s defeat, the case remains that Millwall need to find a striker this summer who can score ten or more goals to fire them up the table.

Bradshaw was the top-scoring outand-out centre-forward in the league this season with four goals and played less minutes than Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, who netted just once throughout 2020-21.

With a two-man midfield, Millwall looked far too exposed for long spells on the counter attack - particularly against Coventry’s diamond, allowing the hosts to dominate that battle and exploit the space between the lines.

And with so many players out injured such as key men Shaun Hutchinson and

Ryan Leonard - it was clear to see that there isn’t enough depth.

Romeo was preferred at centre-back to Alex Pearce and looked uncomfortable, Evans would ideally be in midfield and Rowett was limited in the positive changes he could make by Matt Smith’s injury and Kenneth Zohore going back to West Brom before this game.

Millwall are backing Rowett this summer with improvements to the training ground and other areas - and with fans back at The Den he is enthused about challenging for the play-offs.

Bringing in the right players this summer could determine whether his Millwall reign will end up a success or failure - with the possibility of five or six signings, as well as an addition to the coaching staff after Williams’ departure.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IT WAS former Arsenal midfielder and World Cup winner Patrick Vieira who first spotted George Evans’ potential to play as a centre-back.

After finishing his playing career at Manchester City, Vieira was appointed the club’s Elite Development Squad boss in 2013 before guiding the side to victory in the Premier League International Cup in 2014-15.

City defeated Porto 1-0 in the final through current Leicester striker Kelechi Iheanacho’s goal.

Evans made a crucial intervention after that strike when he prevented an equaliser by stretching to get a toe to a shot and deflecting it over Angus Gunn’s crossbar.

Evans would have been glad this season for Vieira’s vision in spotting that defensive instinct in him after he had mostly played as a midfielder until then.

Evans had played just eight times for Derby in 2020-21 before he got the opportunity to join Millwall in January.

With Murray Wallace out injured, Lions boss Gary Rowett needed someone to go into a back three, preferably someone comfortable on the ball who could move forward to join attacks.

Evans was ready-made for the role

after his experience in that successful City side.

“Patrick was a coach at the time at Man City with the EDS,” Evans explained. “To be fair, he was the first person to put me at centre-back.

“Patrick was obviously a fantastic player, he achieved a lot in the game and I’ve got massive respect for him.

“There was maybe something in my ability to be able to play out from the back that he liked.

“The last season I was there I played the full season at centre-half. We won the [Premier League International Cup]. I played centre-half in that game as well so that’s where it started.

“The last couple of games I played for Derby I was in a back three. It’s something that when I first spoke to the manager I said that in a back three I’m comfortable.

“The game’s in front of me. When there were a few injures there was the opportunity to go and play there and for me it’s great because I feel like I can get more minutes.

“Instead of too drastic a formation with players out injured I can slot in there. It does give me a few more opportunities to play rather than if you’re nailed down in one position.”

Rowett would ideally like to play Evans in midfield from next season, but the former Reading man’s main concern is regular football.

“It’s a cliché but I’ll play anywhere, especially after the lack of minutes [at Derby],” he said. “I’d played midfield

most of my career before at Reading [under Japp Stam] they played me in a back three stepping into midfield to try to create overloads. I feel like I can bring the ball forward, I’m comfortable doing that.

“I’m happy to play in defence if it means I’m playing all season.”

After not always being in the picture at Derby, Evans started every one of the nineteen league games that were left in 2020-21 after he joined the Lions.

He was certainly never going to complain about fatigue after such an intense season.

“That’s what I wanted,” he said.

“The first conversation I had with the manager over Zoom I knew it was a place I wanted to come. It was something I was very excited about.

“There was the opportunity to play and I knew I had to do well to keep the shirt. I’m absolutely delighted how it’s gone so far and I hope I’ve made a bit of an impact.

“But I’m not going to rest on my laurels. I need to make sure next season that I keep my place in the team.

“I didn’t really get that opportunity at Derby last season but I am getting it here now.

“I’ve got nothing but good words to say since I arrived. It’s a fantastic club and it’s the most I’ve enjoyed my football in my whole career. I’ve absolutely loved it.

“The lads are fantastic, the staff are really helpful and the gaffer is brilliant as well.

“I’m looking forward to having a full season at The Den, especially with the fans behind us and the difference that makes. Hopefully that was the last time we’ve played with no fans.”

It’s no surprise that Evans is a good technical footballer after coming through at City and he will be looking at the images of the progress of the new pitch at The Den with interest ahead of next season.

Millwall aren’t suddenly going to make 1,000 passes a game or have 70 per cent possession as Pep Guardiola’s side have against most opponents.

But the Lions showed last season they are developing on the ball, as well as retaining that directness when it’s required.

“Having a brand-new pitch is going to be a massive help for us,” Evans said.

“On a better surface we can mix our game because we’re capable of doing both.

“There are some great footballers in the squad and we know we can play teams off the park as well as play the ball forward and get on to second balls.

“We need to find that balance. We’re not going to be a Total Football team, we’ll mix it up.

“The pitch last season was the same for both teams. It’s something that you just have to get a handle on. When you do play on a pitch that’s not great sometimes you need to take that extra touch or pass to make sure the ball settles down.

“But it’s great to see the new pitch

going in as that’ll be important for us going forward if we want to get it down and play.”

Millwall ended the season on a low note with their 6-1 defeat to Coventry last Saturday.

Evans, though, looks at the bigger picture and, with fans set to return to The Den, he believes there is a real chance to build on two top-half finishes.

He said: “On the whole it’s been a fantastic season. In the short time I’ve been here I’ve loved every second of it and I think a top-half finish again is a good achievement.

“I know that the fans play a massive part and that’s something I’m excited about. I speak to the lads a lot and they’ve said the difference is incredible when the fans are behind us.

“It was a disappointing end to the season but finishing top half is something we can build on and kick on next season.

“There are definitely good foundations there.

“I’m thinking about next season already. I’ve had a few days off now and am thinking about pre-season.

“The gaffer said we need to kick on next season. We’re definitely capable of pushing on. We’re not necessarily setting definite targets but we just have to try to push as much as we can.

“We’ve got some great players in the squad, I’ve seen that even in the short time I’ve been here. Hopefully we can keep climbing the table next season.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT revealed the emergence of Billy Mitchell was one of the reasons Shaun Williams was not offered a new contract at Millwall.

Williams – who will turn 35 next October – will leave the Lions after seven-and-ahalf seasons when his contract expires in the summer.

Williams was signed by Ian Holloway from MK Dons in January 2014 and went on to make 295 appearances and score 22 goals for the Lions.

He played in two League One playoff finals winning promotion in 2017 after Millwall’s 1-0 win over Bradford at Wembley.

Williams also won his first Ireland cap at the age of 31 against France in May 2018.

He scored his first international goal in the next game in the Nations League against Wales and won his third and final cap against Poland.

Mitchell, 20, became a regular in the side in the second half of last season after missing the first half of the campaign through injury.

Williams was appointed player coach last summer.

“When you see him every day in training he’s a really good footballer, Willo,” Rowett said. “He sees passes that other people don’t see, he has that awareness about his touch.

“He’s been fantastic, he’s been an excellent payer.

“And I think the only real reason we’ve not extended his contract is the likes of Billy Mitchell are coming through. You have to create that opportunity for them to come through and not to stunt that chance.

“Willo’s been brilliant, he’s been great around the place. He’s well respected by all the other players, by the staff.

“I can’t say enough about Willo.”

Millwall could announce in the coming weeks who will step into Williams’ coaching role.

“There will be a little bit of development coaching in there for some of the younger players we’ve got. There will be a little bit of individual work for some of the other players and other stuff.

I’ve got a good idea of that so you’ll just have to wait and see.”

Millwall will need a new goalkeeper to challenge Bart Bialkowski for the No.1 spot with Frank Fielding leaving after two seasons with the club.

Fielding, 33, joined from Bristol City on a free transfer in 2019 but was injured on his debut, his only league appearance for the club. He played twice in the EFL Cup. “He’s a great guy, really professional,” Rowett said. “He’s a really unselfish team player. He’s an experienced keeper and has played around the Championship for some years.

“It’s not easy just to turn up every week and be encouraging, put your own disappointment to one side. He’s done that. He’s a fabulous goalkeeper.

“That’s going to be the difficulty this year, you’re letting some good senior professionals go who are integral to the

“We have to make sure we replace those characters as well as players that we think can help us further.

“We’re probably looking at a slightly younger goalkeeper but one that’s still got good experience that can push Bart.

“You want that competition for places. That’s what we want and that’s more or less what we’ll try to get.

“If we can’t get that we’ll get the best player we can possibly try to get.”

Frank Fielding leaves after two seasons

By John Kelly Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk RETURNING MILLWALL fans will watch their players perform on a Premier League-standard pitch next season after work started this week on a full reconstruction of the playing area – the first since the club moved to the stadium in 1993.

The six-figure project had been signed off by the board to commence last summer before plans were postponed after the season had been paused as the UK dealt with the Covid-19 pandemic.

But finally, overseen by head groundsman Steven Chalk, machinery moved in this week to start work on a new hybrid pitch.

Supporters are set to return to grounds in 2021-22 - Millwall have already sold almost 5,000 season tickets in the first window of availability.

One of the problems at The Den is the pitch retains too much water, with the structure underneath remaining the

same for 28 years. But those fittings are currently being upgraded or replaced.

In March 2020, Chalk explained to the News the plans for the ground.

“The actual undersoil heating, the irrigation, the drainage, is the same construction as what was put in in May 1993,” Chalk said. “Yes, we take off the top 25 mil [millimetres] every year like most clubs do.

“This season’s [2019-20] been horrendous weather-wise, how we got through some games I don’t know. The board are fully aware of what’s going on, and so is the manager [Gary Rowett].

When he came in he was briefed that it was a very, very old surface and come winter it struggles, there’s no denying that.

“We do everything we can to try to get that water off the surface. We use all different kinds of aeration machines on a monthly basis. We’re not just sitting back doing nothing, that’s not the case at all.

“We were meant to get a new pitch this summer: new drains, new irrigation, new

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL MANAGER Gary Rowett wants to see a fairer “filteringdown” of parachute payments – as the three clubs that got relegated last season from the Premier League could all bounce straight back up.

Champions Norwich and Watford are already promoted and Bournemouth will join them if they win the play-offs.

It would be the first time since the start of the Premier League in 1992-93 that had happened.

There have been five seasons when two clubs relegated to the second tier have been promoted in the following

campaign. Fulham have been promoted twice and relegated twice in the last four seasons and in 2021-22 they will aim for three promotions in three campaigns after dropping into the Championship.

Clubs coming down from the top flight receive between £75-90million in parachute payments over two or three years.

At the other end of the Championship table, Wycombe and Rotherham went straight back down as they struggled to compete after promotion.

“I know it’s probably going to end but if you look at this season’s wage cap in League One and then you look at the parachute payments for the teams that come down, I think for those six teams in question there are disadvantages and advantages,” Rowett said.

“The three teams that come down have a huge advantage, of course, and for the three teams that come up from League One there’s a huge disadvantage.

“Because you can’t suddenly quadruple your budget within six weeks with the risk that you might not be in that division for more than a season.

“So it seems a little bit illogical to get that at one end and not to get it at the other end.

“But it’s the Premier League, isn’t it?

We’ve seen it recently where money trumps all.

“I understand that you’ve got to push hard to have a competitive chance of staying in the Premier League. However, it then seems unfair that you can fail for a season, get relegated, and then have a massive advantage in trying to go back up.

“But most seasons it’s not that easy.

I think this season it’s an anomaly that all three teams - if they haven’t already got promoted - have a chance of being promoted back straightaway.

“There has to be a more even filteringdown of some of that parachute money, in my opinion, to give all teams in all leagues a slightly fairer and even chance.”

Meanwhile, Millwall confirmed this week that they had crashed through the 5,000 barrier for season tickets sold for 2021-22.

In a video message on social media, Rowett said: “Hi guys, we’ve just hit 5,000 season tickets for next season – fabulous response from everybody.

“I hope to see you down at The Den soon. I think it’s going to be an exciting season.”

Lions boss Gary Rowett confirmed after the last game of the season at Coventry that player-coach Shaun Williams and goalkeeper Frank Fielding would depart after their contracts expire at the end of June.

Shane Ferguson is also leaving after six seasons, while Millwall were still talking to Alex Pearce and Matt Smith.

The Lions will wait to announce the list of further departures, including those who have been part of the under-23 squad.

“Once the season finishes then that’s when we’ll divulge that information. I think that’s fair to the players that it will involve,” Rowett said.

“Some of those players it might be we’ve entered into talks and we either get deals done or we don’t.

“Because again there are two sides to the story, whether a player wants to re-sign. You’ve lots of different things in the melting pot, it’s not always just about the club taking a contract offer up. If there’s an option it’s different.

“Not everything is going to be clear on the final day of the season, but there are a few things that will be clearer.

“It’s only right to wait until the end of the season before we announce those things.”
