camberwell councillor ‘not involved’ with controversial scheme, insists employer Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Camberwell councillor has come under fire by campaigners opposed to a controversial development on the edge of Burgess Park.

Tom Flynn, Labour councillor for the Camberwell Green ward, is a director for digital at SEC Newgate, who are acting as “community engagement consultants” for Burlington Developments’ plans to build 32 flats at 13 Southampton Way, on the southern edge of Burgess Park. The company has further Southwark Labour links, as its Executive Chairman is Mark Glover - a former Labour councillor and former chair of Southwark Labour Group.

The development would build on an area that is currently occupied by informal businesses. All the flats would be designated “affordable”. Six would be for social rent and the remaining 26 would be for shared ownership. Nearly a third of the site - some 424 square metres - would be decontaminated and added to the park for public use, at no expense to the taxpayer. Plans also include a new community space and “cycle friendly café”, as well as bike pumps, a bottle fill station and bike repair stand.

Campaigners point out that the site has been designated Metropolitan Open Land - one of the highest levels of protection - and the council has long earmarked the entire area for compulsory purchase, to add it to the park.

The site is a few metres outside the boundaries of Cllr Flynn’s Camberwell Green ward, which ends in the middle of Southampton Way. SEC Newgate said Cllr Flynn had no involvement in the project, in line with company policy. But some residents of the ward have questioned why one of their councillors is a senior staff member at a company that is working on a development that has so strongly divided opinion in the local area.

One of the pieces of work that SEC Newgate has done for the 13 Southampton Way project is a website that encourages and helps people to provide supportive comments on the planning application.

A previous version of the website asked people to provide their names and email addresses and invited them to click any number of preset reasons that they support the development.

Once the person clicked to submit these, they

were posted on the planning application as a supportive comment.

An email from a Southwark Council planning officer last week to a concerned local resident said that Global Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) could have been broken. The email said that “the breach seems to be from the developer”.

Developers Burlington are adamant there has been no breach.

Boss Philip Patrick said: “'The website which enables people to submit their support is, and has been GDPR compliant, and there has been no breach while it has been in operation. I understand that some changes were made to the website, at the suggestion of planning officers, to make their processing of comments easier.

Supporters are now diverted to the webform on the council website rather than them sending an email which then had to be loaded onto the form.”

SEC Newgate also said in the small print of this version of the website - accessed by the News through an internet archive - that it believed it complied with GDPR. The company also said the website in question was outsourced.

SEC Newgate’s website for developers Burlington no longer collects email addresses or names. Instead it provides the same list of reasons to support the plans as a block of text that you can copy and paste into the planning site.

broke GDPR rules would be scrubbed from the planning website. It is unclear if they have been removed yet.

The application website has 587 comments at the time of writing. Some 465 comments are objecting, while 122 are in favour.

Many of the comments in favour seem to be the result of SEC Newgate’s planning website.

A typical comment reads: “Dear Southwark Council, I am writing in support of the planning application [REF: 21/AP/0451] for 13 Southampton Way, Camberwell, for the following reasons (please choose any or all of the following reasons below)”, before including the same reasons that are on the website SEC Newgate was tasked with creating.

Some other supportive comments appear more organic.

A spokesperson for SEC Newgate said: “SEC Newgate UK has a very clear policy that any staff members who hold elected positions have absolutely no involvement in clients or projects that relate to the areas they represent.

“For local councillors, this means they would be restricted from working on any projects pertaining to the area of the local authority they represent and we control this internally by restricting access to the files on such projects.

We reported in March on local objections to the proposed development, including the point that the council had previously proposed buying up the entire site.

A report in January 2014 said that “this work will dramatically improve the environment at the north end of Southampton Way and for the regenerated Elmington Estate. This proposed sizable increase in green space will also yield benefits for Camberwell as a whole.”

Friends of Burgess Park and Burgess Park Action Group want the council to buy up the land and add it to the park to protect the area’s biodiversity, which includes a nearby wildlife site. The News understands that the council’s planning advice suggested that a compulsory purchase order would be unsuccessful.

The groups are running a petition protesting the development which has gained nearly 3,700 signatures. Friends of Burgess Park and its supporters have also drawn up alternative plans for landscaping the entire site.

Patrick said in March that he had spent two years in consultation with local people, the council and the Greater London Authority and added that the development, which is technically all “affordable”, would help meet the borough’s “pressing housing need”.

He noted that the council had not bought up the site despite the 2014 recommendations. In response to questions about the impact on the park’s wildlife, Patrick said that the development will include new areas of native scrub and shrubs, while also keeping mature trees, among other plans.

“Concerns have been raised by some objectors about the potential overshadowing of the proposals upon the park, and the impact this may have upon its biodiversity,” he added.

“It should be noted that where the highest levels of shading will occur, close to the building, species have been chosen that thrive in shaded conditions. All areas of native planting will receive sunlight for significant periods of the day and as many of the species are shade tolerant, will continue to establish.”

Dulwich Festival goes virtual this week

kevin@southwarknews.co.uk The annual Dulwich Festival returns with a veritable smorgasbord of virtual delights, including art, music, talks and literature from tomorrow, Friday May 7, right up until the following Sunday, May 16.

Unable to be put on at its usual venues around Dulwich the virtual festival will host lively and thought-provoking live streamed events, including with Mercury-nominated folk musician Sam Lee discussing his debut novel, ‘The Nightingale’ with Harriet Lamb, author and CEO of climate solutions charity, Ashden. The Extinction Rebellion activist and conservationist will tell his story of our changing environment through this elusive bird.

For those fascinated by local history Professor Alison Yarrington, alongside Dr Dawn Pereira and Dr Melanie Veasey, will be recounting the story of Tasmanian sculptor, Oliffe Richmond’s epoch-defining ‘Striding Man’. The impressive outdoor bronze sculpture was gifted to the presently named Charter School in 1962, however having sustained damage, it has been boxed up for many years. Tickets to the event are free, with donations in aid of its restoration.

And who knew that Herne Hill’s Velodrome played host to Basket Racing in the 1940s!

Local historian Ian McInnes will be giving an illustrated talk looking at a range of different sports and sports personalities who have

graced the green pastures of Dulwich from 1870 right up until 1970.

Other highlights include a Children’s Art competition and for those budding writers, the Flash Fiction competition returns after its popular debut last year.

Jennifer Scott, Director of Dulwich Picture Gallery and Alexander Moore, Curator of Unearthed: Photography’s Roots will discuss the Gallery’s critically acclaimed photography exhibition, soon to reopen on May 19.

Returning by popular demand, poet, comedian and musician John Hegley, will explore ‘Fish and Ships’ in a family workshop. Inspired by the French ‘Poisson d’Avril’, the continental April Fool’s Day tradition of fashioning and fastening paper fishes onto unsuspecting jackets; join John in the making of fish and the drawing of ships!

Police believe they have found body of schoolboy in river

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Police believe they have recovered the body of the 13-yearold Southwark schoolboy who fell into the Thames from Tower Bridge more than two weeks ago.

The boy was a Year 8 student at Ark Globe Academy near Elephant and Castle.

Police found a body on Wednesday, April 28, but have still not formally identified him, more than a week after he was found.

A spokesperson for the City of London police said: “At around midday on Wednesday, 28 April, a body was recovered from the River Thames by marine units which we believe to be that of a 13 year old who has been missing since Tuesday 20 April. His family have been informed but at this time formal identification has not yet taken place.”

Ark Globe’s principal Matt Jones said: “We are very saddened to hear that a body has been found and that the police believe it is the missing student of ours. Our hearts go out to his family and friends. As a school community, we are pulling together ensuring all our students are supported at this difficult time.”

In a letter sent to parents the previous Wednesday, April 21, the school named the student, breaking the terrible news, and said that he was being treated as a missing person by police.

The News has withheld the boy’s name until we have more information from police. In the letter Jones said that the boy “did not make his way into school despite travelling on a bus with a friend in full school uniform. He got off the bus near Tower Bridge before his usual bus

stop nearest to Ark Globe Academy and fell into the River Thames.”

The letter continued: “This is obviously distressing news for [the] family, friends and the wider Ark Globe Community. Our hopes and prayers are with the family at this very difficult time.”

Jones urged parents to contact the school if they think their child needs help, or the NSPCC, the UK’s top children’s charity, if it is outside school hours.

He also told parents that school staff “know the important role they play in keeping children safe” and reminded them of Ark’s safeguarding procedures.

He added that the last year has been “a very difficult time” for many students and their families.

Jones told the News last week: “We can confirm that a student at Ark Globe Academy did not arrive to school on the morning Tuesday 20 April as expected.

At this moment in time, there is a live police investigation in relation to the young person’s disappearance. The police are treating this case as a ‘missing persons’ incident.

“This is obviously distressing news for the young person’s family, friends, and the wider Ark Globe Community. As a school community, we are dealing with this sensitively so as not to compromise the integrity of the police investigation and we wish to respect the privacy of the family while the investigation is ongoing. Our hopes and prayers are with the family at this very difficult time.”

appeal: Shop worker was 'repeatedly shot in the body and head' with BB gun

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Detectives investigating a violent armed robbery at a shop in New Cross have released an image of a man they are seeking to identify in connection with the incident.

At just after midnight on 24 February, a man in possession of an air-powered weapon entered a shop on New Cross Road and demanded cash.

The man threatened the male member of staff with a ‘BB gun’ and when demands were not met, repeatedly shot the shopkeeper in the body and head.

Officers said the victim 'selfpresented at a south London hospital' where he underwent surgery to remove two pellets from his body. He has been left with permanent scarring.

The suspect escaped with no money.

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 40 years of age, with a London accent and wearing a patterned face mask.

Detective Constable Claudine Manning, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “I am appealing to anyone who was in or around the New Cross Road area at around midnight on 24 February - do you recall seeing the man pictured above?

“The victim of this incident suffered a terrifying ordeal. We remain committed to finding the man responsible and holding him accountable for his actions.”

Heartless thieves stole barbecue equipment that had been put out for a little autistic boy’s eighth birthday in Bermondsey last week.

Jennie Sherringham, who lives on Ann Moss Way near Lower Road, put out a barbecue and two fire pits in her garden for her son’s eighth birthday on Friday, April 30.

Thinking they would be safe on the relatively quiet residential street, she left for the school run, with the barbecue equipment still in the garden.

But when she got back later that morning, the barbecue, fire pits and her son Nadir’s bike were all gone - at a combined cost of about £300, Sherringham said.

“My son is autistic, so once things are set it’s set,” she said. “Obviously for the barbecue stuff to go, as well as his bike, meaning there was a probability that he might not get a party for his birthday, that really overwhelmed him and he was very upset.”

Luckily a kind neighbour stepped in to save the day, lending new barbecue equipment so the birthday could still go ahead as planned on Friday.

Tony does it again for Evelina The six-year-old smashes new target five times over

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A little boy who raised more than £1.5 million for Evelina London Children’s Hospital has taken part in a fundraising challenge in honour of Captain Sir Tom Moore.

Tony Hudgell, who had to have both legs amputated after being physically abused by his birth parents at just a few weeks old, has raised another £76,500 after walking more than 500 steps without crutches.

Doctors and nurses at Evelina London Children’s Hospital have cared for Tony since he was a baby.

Tony miraculously survived multiple fractures, dislocations, blunt trauma, multi-organ failure, toxic shock and sepsis as a baby – with medics saying he was seconds away from death.

We reported last year on his first

fundraising walk, where he set the challenge of walking ten kilometres in his new prosthetic legs throughout June, with the support of his adoptive parents.

This time Tony, now aged six, took part in the Captain Tom 100 challenge, after the family of the legendary NHS fundraiser asked people to set themselves charity challenges based around the number 100 between Friday April 30 and Monday May 3.

Tony’s original task was to walk 100 steps without crutches - but he smashed through this and walked the distance five times over.

Tony’s adoptive mum Paula said: “We’re so proud of Tony for once again beating the odds and taking more than 500 steps without his crutches.

“He’s such a determined little boy so we had no doubt he would be able to do this. It means so much more that he’s been able to do it while celebrating the life of Captain Tom, who inspired him to take on his first walking challenge.”

In October last year, Tony received some specially designed prosthetic legs from Guy’s and St Thomas’

prosthetics service. With his new legs, Tony is 5cm taller and should have better mobility.

Paula, 52, said: “Since his fundraising last year, Tony’s confidence has improved so much. He’s always been a lovely, cheeky little boy, but now he’s even more outgoing and self-assured.”

Tony’s prosthetist Andreia Paulo said: “We’re all so pleased to see that Tony has done so well with his new challenge. He is such an inspiration and the whole team here are all so proud of him. There’s no stopping him, so we can’t wait to see what he’s going to do next.”

missing newborn baby in need of urgent medical care

kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Police are trying to trace a newborn baby girl whom doctors say needs urgent medical treatment, after her parents went missing with her last Thursday, April 29.

The baby, who will only be twelvedays-old today, is the daughter of Azara and Machel Graham, from Southwark, whom officers say have not listened to doctors' advice.

The family have not been seen since a post-natal assessment last Thursday and their whereabouts is unknown.

The News last Friday put out an appeal online where the police said they were last seen in the Bermondsey area at approximately 3.20pm.

The force said it has launched a highrisk missing person investigation and has begun conducting urgent inquiries, including visiting the couple's Southwark home several times a day.

So far they have found no trace of the couple or the baby, whom police are referring to as "Baby Graham".

The parents were told during the appointment that the baby was suffering symptoms consistent with a serious respiratory condition and

needed to be taken to A&E for an urgent assessment, the Metropolitan Police said.

Detective Chief Inspector Lucy O'Connor, leading the investigation, said: "We are becoming increasingly concerned for the safety of Baby Graham. Her parents have not followed the medical advice they were given and in doing so, could be putting her health at risk.

"There will be a time and a place to explore their reasons, but right now our priority has to be the safety of this very young baby."

She added: "While we would of course ask the public to keep an eye out for Baby Graham's parents, we believe it's likely they are being accommodated by relatives or associates.

"I would urge those people to put the welfare of this tiny baby girl above any other loyalty they may have and get in touch with the police.

"I would also appeal directly to Azara and Machel to do the right thing and to go to the nearest A&E so that Baby Graham can get the care she needs."

Tributes continue in Bermondsey for Thames hero Jimi The Bishop of Southwark and police join calls for him to be honoured

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Hundreds of people gathered for a memorial last week for Folajimi Olubunmi-Adewole, the young Bermondsey man who died after jumping into the Thames at London Bridge to save a woman in the water.

Friends and family of Jimi, as he was known to the people close to him, gave speeches, said prayers and read from the Bible at the Friday afternoon event at Bermondsey Spa Gardens, not far from the family home on the Neckinger Estate.

“It was a really moving event,” said Gary Jenkins, vicar of the nearby St James and St Anne’s parish on Jamaica Road. “There was a very good turnout from the local community and from friends. They were very quiet, very respectful. There was a very special atmosphere.

“There were some wonderful speeches about Jimi’s life, prayer, a reading from the Bible - it was a great event. The whole community has been so deeply moved by this."

The congregation at St James and St Anne’s has been praying for Jimi and his family, Jenkins said.

“I think we all recognise that this was a heroic act. The two words that come to me are compassion and bravery. He was a young man of great compassion and great bravery.”

Jenkins visited Jimi’s parents Michael and Olusankami to pay his respects.

Sir Simon Hughes, who was MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark for more than 30 years until 2015, also visited. “[Jimi’s parents] were very welcoming, very brave, well supported by family and friends,” he said later.

Bishop Christopher Chessun, of Southwark Cathedral, near where Jimi jumped into the Thames in the early hours of April 24, also paid his respects

to the young man’s family on Friday.

A memorial has been set up by the Thames opposite the cathedral, where well-wishers have put down flowers to honour Jimi’s gallantry. Southwark mayor Cllr Barrie Hargrove and Cllr Evelyn Akoto are among those who laid down flowers.

Bishop Christopher said that prayers were also being said in the cathedral for Jimi and his family.

“From my perspective as a bishop, there is something about so many young people, their acts of selfless generosity, rarely get the news coverage they deserve, because the focus, particularly in London, is often on bad news,” he told the News this week.

“And... obviously very sadly as a result of his selfless generosity Jimi surrendered his life and that’s a terrible tragic consequence of his bravery.”

Bishop Christopher added that Jimi’s actions were a pure expression of Christian ideals.

Residents say council is ignoring their heating issues Exclusive

People living on a Bermondsey council estate have still not had their heating and hot water problems sorted out, after months of frequent outages.

The Rouel Road estate is having a new communal district heating system put in to replace antiquated equipment. We reported in January that some people on Woolstaplers, Amina and Cadbury Way had been in the cold for months.

And nearly four months later, the problems continue, three residents said - despite frequent promises from the council that the heating issue was sorted.

Residents said the most recent outage was from Wednesday April 28 at about 9am to about 11pm on Thursday April 29, but for some people the heating has been off for months, often leaving them reliant on expensive electric heaters.

Elizabeth Allen, who lives on Amina Way, has had no functioning radiator in her living room since last year - leaving her shivering indoors.

Compounding the problem, late last year she was hospitalised suddenly.

Not knowing where she was, her family asked the police to do a welfare check.

Officers smashed one of Elizabeth’s front windows after getting no answer, in order to get inside her house to check on her.

Several months later the window has not been replaced. Council officers have instead placed a wooden board over the hole where the window should be.

David, another resident of the estate, who has also suffered outages, said that it was very difficult to report problems and complained of being passed between different officials as he tried to inform the council of issues with the heating.

“It’s just outrageous - it feels like the council don’t care,” he said.

Rachel, who also lives on the estate, is a swimming teacher in Croydon. She has recently gone back to her swimming school after work paused for more than a year during the series of coronavirus lockdowns.

“I’m now not allowed to use the showers at work, so I come home covered in chlorine. My hair stays stuck on my head.

That’s how it affects my life. We’re in Covid times and I have to boil my kettle just to wash my face.”

Residents also said they had tried to get in touch with council leader Kieron Williams for help with the problem, but without much luck.

“It’s beyond a joke, no wonder the country is in the state it’s in,” Rachel added.

“There’s no one leading by example.”

A spokesperson for Southwark Council said that fan heaters have been provided for every resident who has asked for one and heating refunds will be provided in line with council policies for heating outages.

Mayoral rivals both commit to online access to learn English in Southwark

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark residents who don't speak English as a first language are likely to get access to online information about classes, after promises made last week by the two frontrunners to be London's next mayor.

Labour's Sadiq Khan and the Conservatives' Shaun Bailey responded to a campaign by the Love ESOL (English as a second language) group by committing to starting up a comprehensive website for English language learners last Wednesday, April 28.

Some waiting lists for English classes have now reached 1,000 people, according to the group. Rules about who is eligible and where to find classes can also make learning English difficult.

Adela Belecova, a Southwark-based ESOL teacher and a coordinator for the campaign, said: “For many migrants, not being able to improve their English is not only a barrier to

finding good work, supporting their children and living a full life, but can also leave them vulnerable to exploitation at work.

“If we could ensure better provision of classes and information on where they are happening, as well as relax restrictions about who can attend, it would improve many lives and make London more inclusive.”

Ricardo Marceliano, an ESOL student from Southwark, said:”ESOL is important for us because it helps us improve our English and introduce us [to] the English society or community.

“There are a lot of barriers to learning English, for example is not easy to find a website with classes on the internet, free English class, it is not free for everyone, also undocumented people have a big barrier. [For] these people [it] is very complicated to have access to English class.

“Having a website with ESOL would be helpful because people can easily get information about English courses.”

A man was rushed to hospital on Sunday, May 2, after a collision between a car and a motorbike in Bermondsey, writes Kit Heren...

Police were called by the London Ambulance Service to a collision near the junction of Abbey Street and Jamaica Road. A 31-year-old man involved in the

collision was taken to a south London hospital by the London Ambulance Service at about 4pm that afternoon.

The man’s condition remains unclear.

No arrests have been made but the northern end of Abbey Street was cordoned off on Sunday afternoon as police investigated the accident.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Shad Thames residents have worked together to save seven ducklings from being savaged by an aggressive magpie.

Local man Kevin Corr was walking past the Thames Water pumping station on Maguire Street last Friday, April 30, when he saw that workers at the water company had found the ducklings on a ledge without their mother.

He asked members of a social media group for the local community if anyone could help take care of them until animal experts could be called out.

Charlie Hemmings, another local, saw the message and stepped in to help.

“I went by and grabbed them, the Thames Water guys had put them in the bucket,” he said.

“I took them home and put them in a bath. I was a bit worried about my dog, because he was leaning over the path, but they gave him a little peck on the nose.

“I basically just looked after them until the wildlife trust picked them up.

It was about three hours in total. The whole thing was a combined effort.”

Asked why he decided to help, Hemmings said: “I was bored at home!”.

But he has previous form in avian rescue, having also saved a swan once.

Hemmings said he would be checking in with the wildlife experts regarding the ducklings and has developed an affectionate bond with them.

Sadly one of the ducklings was killed in the original magpie attack, and the ducklings’ mother had flown off by the time of the rescue .

More than just a mural

The artwork, on 26 Peckham Road, shows the keyboard of a piano - a nod to the building’s history as a piano factory. Artist Lionel Stanhope has painted several pieces of street art in the borough, including a mural outside Millwall stadium the Den last summer.

A QR code will be added to the piano factory mural later in May. If you scan the code with the camera on your phone, you will be taken to a short history of music in Camberwell. You will also hear clips from Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn’s Spring Song (also known as Camberwell Green and inspired by his time in the area) and the Basement Jaxx track 'I live in

Camberwell'.

The mural painting was organised by the local Camberwell Identity group, after consultation with Piano Factory residents and the 23rd Camberwell Scouts group. Money came from a crowdfunding campaign which raised over £1000, of which £500 was from the Camberwell Society.

Kelly Blaney, who chairs Camberwell Identity, said: “Camberwell Murals is part of building the buzz around Camberwell [,] encouraging people to explore more of our diverse area and attract new customers for our local businesses.”

This is the fourth mural organised by the Camberwell Identity group: one on the Camberwell New Road entrance to Camberwell, another at Denmark Hill station and a third on Wren Road at Butterfly Walk. We reported in March on the group’s plans to add the piano factory painting.

I don’t think there are two camps. Polling shows that LTNs are overwhelmingly popular but if you took notice of the media coverage it certainly doesn’t seem that way. LTNs I feel are on balance are needed but councils should be honest with the public about where these schemes have sometimes gone wrong and where we haven’t quite brought people with us.

Marina ahmad, labour What do you currently do for a living?

Before I began campaigning as the Labour & Coop London Assembly candidate for Lambeth and Southwark, I was a Bromley Labour councillor representing Crystal Palace ward and the borough spokesperson for education. I am also chair of the GMB Southern Region Race Network. Prior to that, I have worked in the public sector, the NHS, Save the Children in Bangladesh on a street children’s project and then at a community hospital. I was the founder and Director of Race on the Agenda and am also a parenting facilitator for EPEC working with Early Years. I trained as a barrister and worked for the Crown Prosecution Service as well.

What is your connection to Southwark and Lambeth?

I’ve lived in South London for most of my adult life and lived in Brixton for a number of years. As a Councillor for Crystal Palace ward, I have been working right next door to Lambeth and Southwark for the last few years and have dealt with a lot of cross borough issues. I was inspired by the sense of community during the pandemic and want to champion our fantastic local area as part of the GLA. Do you live in the area, and if so, how long have you lived here?

I lived in Brixton for a number of years and now live next door in Bromley, where as a Crystal Palace councillor I led on education issues such as race and secondary school exclusions.

How many homes would you like to see built in Southwark and Lambeth, and what are your views on Southwark’s infill building programme?

Sadiq has a plan. He’ll build 10,000 new council

homes, campaign for the introduction of rent controls and explore the creation of a new ‘right to buy back’ fund, supporting councils to purchase homes previously sold through the right to buy. Sadiq has hit every single housing target agreed with the Government, starting work on record numbers of new genuinely affordable homes including more new council homes last year than in any year since 1983. He is on track to start 116,000 genuinely affordable homes by March 2023.

But the Government need to help as well. I'll help campaign for the Government to give both Sadiq Khan and local councils more cash to build. City Hall can only do so much and until the Government prioritises working people’s needs on housing we will never fix the crisis.

What in your role as Assembly Member do you believe you could do to help tackle knife crime alongside police, the local council and the mayor, whichever party they may be from?

The causes of violent crime are extremely complex and involve deep-seated problems, like inequality, poverty, social alienation and a lack of opportunities

for young people. As the Labour spokesperson for education on Bromley Council and having worked to improve the lives of children in Bangladesh, I have seen first-hand how education and opportunities can change a young person’s life. To tackle knife crime, I want better provisions for young people and a reduction in school exclusions. If elected, I will work to achieve better engagement with local organisations, schools and families in turning young people away from violent crime.

I will encourage schemes that support young people like Sadiq Khan’s Young Londoners Fund, as well as his commitment to put more than 1,000 extra police officers on the streets.

I will work with Sadiq and will also make my voice heard on the assembly. The VRU has done some amazing work to tackle violence at its source but we can’t stop there. I want to work with Sadiq on this issue but if elected, I won’t hold back in raising my constituents’ concerns if the progress we make begins to stop.

Where do you stand on Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and is it possible to satisfy both camps?

Given the halt to the Bakerloo Line extension, what new transport would you want to see introduced to Southwark without government investment?

Well, I know it’s paused but I do think the Bakerloo line extension represents the best route forward for Southwark. Increasing connectivity across South London remains desperately needed despite the improvements made by TfL over the past 5 years. A new station at Surrey Canal Road would also be beneficial for people living in South Bermondsey who at present only have the one route into central London.

To make sure we have a green recovery after the pandemic I would want to make sure we maintain and increase the amount of cycle lanes we have in Southwark. It’s so important that we continue to build on the ULEZ which has cut toxic air by a third. Sadiq has been clear that as we emerge from the pandemic we absolutely must prioritise tackling climate change.

Which areas in Southwark and Lambeth do you believe need most investment to improve the situation for small businesses post-pandemic?

Businesses in Southwark and Lambeth demonstrate the entrepreneurship, drive and creativity that for me sums up the energy of London. I know how difficult the pandemic has been for them and that’s why Sadiq’s mantra if re-elected is ‘jobs, jobs, jobs’. Sadiq has been the most pro-business Mayor we’ve ever had, and he is going to continue standing up for London businesses.

I will work with Sadiq in City Hall to rebuild local businesses and make London a better city than it was before the pandemic.

I will join Sadiq in campaigning to make sure the Tories do not usher in a new era of cuts for investment and we can see a green recovery which puts jobs first.

Other London Assembly member Candidates

The following London Assembly candidates did not provide answers to our questions, so we have written short profiles based on publicly available information.

Hannah Ginnett, Conservatives

Hannah lives in South Bermondsey. She grew up in Darlington in County Durham and moved to London in 2006 after university. She has worked in project management, finance and accounting.

She has previously stood unsuccessfully as a council candidate in the London Bridge and West Bermondsey and Surrey Docks wards of Southwark in 2018, as well as Clapham Town in Lambeth in 2014.

Alongside Conservative mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey, Ginnett backs more housebuilding.

She also would support higher police numbers with the aim of cutting crime.

Florence Cyrot, Liberal Democrats

Originally from France, Florence Cyrot has lived in London for 20 years and now lives in Brixton. She studied in London and now works in higher education.

Cyrot is a vocal campaigner in favour of the European Union. She fought to keep Britain in Europe in the lead-up to the 2016 referendum. She joined the Lib Dems afterwards, swayed by its pro-EU stance. Cyrot says she is concerned about the impact of Brexit on small businesses.

Another key area for her is to improve the mental health of young people and fight knife crime.

April Ashley, Trade Union and Socialist Coalition

April Ashley is a long-term trade union campaigner and activist on other social issues.

She said in a campaign leaflet that she has organised “campaigns against job cuts, attacks on terms and conditions, and national campaigns on pensions pay” for 20 years.

Ashley took part in last year’s Black Lives Matter protests. She added: “We have to make a stand against the billionaires and millionaires who scapegoat immigrants and whip up racism to serve their own needs.”

The Trade Union and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) was founded in 2010 and aims to get trade union officials elected to public office. It said a few of its candidates have been elected to local councils.

John Cronin, Reform UK Party

John Cronin has spoken out against low traffic neighbourhoods, in favour of reforming local democracy and supporting business owners in a campaign video with Brexit campaigner and fellow Reform UK party member Baroness Claire Fox Reform UK was founded in 2018 as the Brexit Party. It was rebranded in January this year after the UK left the EU. One of the party’s signature policies has been opposition to Covid-19 lockdowns.

In today’s election as well as voting for the Mayor of London you will be voting for your assembly member to represent you at City Hall and to hold the mayor to account.

The previous assembly member, Labour’s Florence Eshalomi, stood down from this election after being elected as the MP for Vauxhall, so whoever wins will be new to the job.

The London Assembly is made up of 25 members in total - fourteen of these members are elected directly via their constituents – the constituency for this area takes in all of Southwark and Lambeth. There are six candidates standing, as outlined in these pages, and you simply vote

I run a market research company, specialising in finding and filming people for research projects.

I find people to talk to brands, charities and organisations so they can better understand their world. In the last year I’ve worked on projects around food poverty, HIV testing, modern slavery and the feelings you get from driving, to name a few.

I’m also a passionate community and environmental activist but I don’t get paid for that!

What is your connection to Southwark and Lambeth?

I’ve lived in Southwark all my adult life and I’ve been running my business from SE15 for 9 years, from home and from the Bussey building. My husband runs Shep Sports Massage from Peckham’s Holdron’s Arcade. We have a son who is 5 and is at school in Nunhead. I help run the amazing Nunhead Rocks FB group and I co-founded Nunhead Knocks, Covid support group last year.

Do you live in the area, and if so, how long have you lived here?

For more than 20 years mostly around Peckham and Nunhead, it’s the best place in the world to live in my opinion.

How many homes would you like to see built in Southwark and Lambeth, and what are your views on Southwark’s infill building programme?

There has been a net loss of social housing in our borough. As an Assembly member, Sian Berry has forced the issue of ballots for residents and as Mayor she’d create a People’s Land Commission, so communities not corporations, decide about housing, green space or community space. Greens also propose using unspent grant money to buy back housing for those who need it most.

I support community groups like Save Priory Court and Save Brenchley Gardens in their efforts to protect their green spaces from infill. Since Covid, people who live in flats, like me, need community space more than ever. I don’t think infilling should happen when communities reject it.

What in your role as Assembly Member do you believe you could do to help tackle knife crime alongside police, the local council and the mayor, whichever party they may be from?

Political parties should work together for the greater good on all issues. I’m proud of our manifesto promise to set a zero target for murders in London within 10 years, but knife crime doesn’t happen in a vacuum. We need to look at the

Sian Berry has won funding to stop the closure of over 100 youth centres. We need to stop treating our youth as a problem and start offering solutions.

Groups like the incredible Westminster House Youth Club in Nunhead need more funding and this would make London a safer place for everyone.

Where do you stand on Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and is it possible to satisfy both camps?

As a Green I support making it easier to get around London without making our already dangerously polluted air worse. However, it’s clear that schemes such as LTN’s have to be planned with communities, not just imposed upon them. Communities know what they want and need. I have offered support to those that oppose certain LTNs who have been doxxed and harassed by pro LTN campaigners and vice versa. Our Green policy to extend the ULEZ and make plans for fairer, smart road charging seems to be the fresh approach needed. In a climate emergency, we need to work together to find a way through and not divide communities in the process.

Given the halt to the Bakerloo Line extension, what new transport would you want to see introduced to Southwark without government investment?

Like many in Southwark I was incredibly disappointed to see the Bakerloo extension halted; tube services are geographically and financially out of reach of too many people. We need more not fewer ways for Southwark folk to get around without a car. A Green Mayor would improve bus services in the short term and get projects like the Bakerloo extension and the cancelled Cross River Tram back on the table. It can’t come soon enough.

Which areas in Southwark and Lambeth do you believe need most investment to improve the situation for small businesses post-pandemic?

Both my husband and I are small business owners, so I speak from personal experience.

People think that Big Business is important, but it’s small businesses that keep London going. In Lambeth I’m concerned about the Hondo Tower plans and I support the coalition of small businesses and community campaigners that oppose it. In the “regeneration” of Elephant and Castle small businesses have been ridden roughshod by developers and the council.

Sian Berry has great plans to ensure small businesses survive the ongoing pandemic by focusing on the wants and needs of businesses and residents, not whoever has the most money to buy influence.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Two families living in a south Bermondsey block undergoing regeneration have had holes drilled through their ceilings by builders, with one household told they have to wait weeks for repairs.

We reported last week that people living in Roderick House and Antony House on Raymouth Road have complained of “horrendous” noise from morning until evening, six days a week – making their lives “a living hell”.

Developers Apex Airspace, who are adding 30 more "affordable" flats to the blocks alongside landlords Lambeth and Southwark Housing Association (LSHA), said earlier the building work – which is set to last about a year – should cause “minimal disturbance” to current residents.

But Emma Bourne, who lives on the top floor of Antony House, has had a hole put through her bedroom ceiling by builders in the flat she shares with her partner

and parents. Workmen have drilled two more holes in the bathroom and one in the kitchen.

Bourne said the hole was above her bed, which she has since moved because she was afraid debris could fall on her while she was asleep.

“The drilling on top of the roof is terrible.

We knew something was happening with the ceiling but it wasn’t so bad at first, it still had the plaster on top of it.

“And then I think about an hour later they started drilling again and that’s when it got bigger and bigger. We called up the site manager, he came up and took pictures. He said ‘we can’t do anything’.

“My mum said ‘how can you leave my daughter in a bedroom with a hole on top of her bed?’. All the stuff [plaster] fell on my bed.

“I said to them ‘well I’m not going to live in a bedroom like that’. They said they couldn’t do anything until the work was finished.”

Meanwhile Temi Adenle, who lives on the current top floor of Roderick House, beneath the level where builders are

adding new flats, suffered a shock on last Wednesday week, April 28, when she heard a loud bang behind her and turned around to find a hole in her ceiling and dust pouring through.

“I just started crying,” she said. “I reported it to the housing officer yesterday and she just said ‘oh I apologise’ and told me I need to speak to the [building] manager on site.”

Apex’s Resident Liaison Officer, whose job is to manage the complaints from people who live in the building while construction is going on, said that the holes in both flats would be fixed when the work on the roof is finished, likely to be this week.

The holes in Bourne’s flat were drilled through in mid-April - meaning she will have had to live with the damage for about two weeks.

Adenle, who has lived in the building for six years, said that on top of the hole in her ceiling, she had been having similar problems to other Roderick house residents in recent weeks.

“It’s crazy. I work from home, I’m in meetings, most of the time on the phone.

The noise, the banging, the drilling. It’s just too much – I’m having to move from one room to another.”

She lives in the flat with her four children, aged fifteen, eleven, ten and a one-year-old baby and said they are all suffering from the noise.

Her fifteen-year-old daughter is studying for her assessments to replace GCSEs, which are cancelled this year due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic – but the noise from the drilling is proving very disruptive.

The Apex officer said they would set up an empty flat for Adenle to work in.

Apex specialises in “airspace” development – essentially filling in gaps between or above existing buildings with more housing, and got £10 million in loan funding from the Mayor of London for this project.

Police appeal after teenage boy is held at gunpoint in his own home

By Kit Heren Apprentices with a Southwark training centre for builders are helping put up a shelter for donkeys on the Surrey Docks farm in Rotherhithe.

Police are calling for witnesses to come forward and anyone with dash cam footage after a teenage boy was robbed at gunpoint by three men for hours in south London.

with a hood up and something white covering his face. There was no other description for the third suspect.

Detective Constable Will Wigzell, of the burglary and robbery investigation team, said: “The offence timings in this case are very narrow and we believe witnesses would have seen the suspects fleeing between 20:50 and 21:05 on Sunday, 18 April.

“I urge anyone who was in SW8 postal code, specifically Lansdowne Way, Wandsworth Road, or Priory Park areas, to please come forward if they saw three males acting suspiciously, or any vehicle being driven in a dangerous or reckless manner. I am asking anyone who was in or lives within this area, to review CCTV or dash cam footage that may show the

suspects making off.

“This was an incredibly traumatic experience for the young victim and all those involved, which could have resulted in a far worse outcome. This is a serious offence involving the production of a firearm. Whilst offences like this are rare, those committing them represent the very worst of our society and it is vitally important we find those responsible, to hold them accountable for their actions and give justice to the victims.

“Detectives are working tirelessly to establish the circumstances and I am urging anyone with information, dash cam footage, or residential CCTV that may be relevant, to contact 101 quoting CAD is 6823/18APR.”

Police appeal after Surrey Quays attack

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was left with injuries to his face after a brutal attack in Surrey Quays station.

Police say the victim was walking towards the station just after 5pm on Boxing Day last year when one of the two attackers threw yoghurt on him.

He challenged them and one of them is then said to have punched him twice in the head.

They then chased him into the station and punched him in the face repeatedly, splitting open his cheek and leaving him with a swollen eye from the unprovoked assault.

Officers believe the men in the images may have information which could help their investigation.

The boy, aged seventeen, answered the door of his home in Stockwell to a stranger on Sunday April 18 at about 5.30pm. This man forced his way into the building alongside two accomplices, who were armed with a gun and knives.

The three thugs held the boy and four other people inside his home at gunpoint for three hours. They then ran off and broke into his car. The whole ordeal lasted about three and a half hours, to 9pm that night.

The robbers stole £1,000 in cash and several other high-value possessions in two Nike backpacks. They then ran away down Lansdowne Way. The three suspects are described as black, with the first being of slim build, clean shaven with short black hair, aged in his early to mid-20s and approximately 5ft 10in. He was wearing light navy tracksuit bottoms with one white stripe down each leg.

The second was shorter at about 5ft 6in, and with lighter skin. He was also slim and and was dressed all in black,

We reported last week that the project had turned into “a living hell”, according to some residents, who complained that work was going on much longer than they were initially warned, and was reaching dangerously loud noise levels.

A letter that Apex sent to residents last year told them that building work would go on between 8am and 5pm, from MondayFriday. A later note from April this year said that work was taking place on the site between 7.30am and 6pm from MondayFriday, and 7.30am-1pm on Saturday.

One resident took noise meter readings on April 20 which they said shows building works reached 85 and 86 decibels. Experts generally say that long-term exposure to noise levels above 85 decibels could harm your hearing. Educational charity Noisy Planet say on their website that “sounds at or below 70 dBA are generally considered safe. Any sound at or above 85 dBA is more likely to damage your hearing over time.”

LSHA told Brady in an email in March that they had taken noise meter readings over a ten hour period and they were within the safe range.

Replying to an approach for the original story, Apex added: “Apex Airspace are delighted to be working in partnership with LSHA to provide 30 much needed affordable homes in this innovative way – through the provision of airspace flats built off site.

“If there has been undue noise or disruption we apologise to the residents.

Now the groundworks elements are coming to an end, any noise should be greatly reduced going forward. Resident engagement is key to our approach and we hold weekly drop in sessions for issues to be raised, issue a weekly newsletter and provide letters to specific residents affected by upcoming works.”

LSHA did not respond to a request for comment.

Five apprentices at the Southwark Construction Skills Centre are working alongside Keltbray to put up the shelter for the donkeys, who need protection from wet weather as their coats are not waterproof.

Funding for the shelter was donated by a long-term visitor to the farm, which overlooks the river not far from Greenland Dock.

Speaking on the project, Manager at Surrey Docks Farm Gemma Hooper said: “We would like to give a huge thank you to the Southwark Construction Skills Centre for their continued support of the Farm...

“The field shelter was funded through a memorial donation on behalf of someone who regularly visited and enjoyed the Farm. It's wonderful that we can complete all the work in a community-focused way”.

John White, Director of the Skills Centre added: “The apprentices worked extremely hard, and I am delighted that we were able to

support such a great cause. We know apprenticeships work and it was great to see both them and the farm benefiting from their efforts.

Our apprentices not only gained skills valuable on large construction sites, but they also saw how they can use their skills to enrich their local communities.”

“Now that the Southwark Construction Skills Centre is moving from its original base at Elephant Park to a new home at Canada Water, we will be closer than ever to the Farm. We thoroughly enjoyed working with them and look forward to having our apprentices helping out again very soon.”

Peckham restaurant in anti-racism cookbook A Peckham restaurant is featured in a recipe book that wants to cut down racist abuse.

Vietnamese restaurant Banh Banh, at 46 Peckham Rye, has contributed to the Recipes Against Racism online cookbook, which will fund antiracism charities through its sales.

The cookbook was put together

by London restaurants that serve south-east Asian food, in response to the rise in hate crimes against Asian people over the past year.

The Met Police recorded a yearly

increase in hate crimes towards people of east Asian ethnic descent of more than 170 per cent in March 2020, according to Charity Stop Hate UK. "We were horrified by the growing anti-[east and south-east Asian] race crimes during the pandemic and wanted to help drive awareness and change,” said Claire Sachiko and Lex Shu, who led the project.

“We know that activism can come in many forms, and food can be a vehicle to challenge ‘othering’ stereotypes

and celebrate multi-ethnic and multicultural identities and heritage."

Half of the funds raised from the cookbook will go to charity End The Virus of Racism, which provides mental health support and guides to legal advice in Asian languages. The other half will be donated to Stop Hate UK, which operates a 24-hour hate crime reporting service.

King’s College Hospital has hired an experienced new chief executive.

Julie Lowe has been made site chief executive for the hospital and is responsible for its overall performance. She has had this job on an interim basis since September last year.

Julie brings nearly 30 years of

experience to King’s. She joined the NHS in 1992 as a national management trainee and has worked in hospitals in London, Yorkshire and Hertfordshire in a variety of positions, including nine years in chief executive roles.

Before joining King's, Julie spent three years as Programme Director for the South East London Integrated Care System.

You can now take a walk along the Merchant Line A 250 metre-long bronze strip from London Bridge station to the river Thames, representing the area’s maritime history, was unveiled last week.

The Merchant Line, which runs through the More London Place area near Tower Bridge, includes notes on historical research along its length, designed to encourage passers-by to think and explore the area.

The information comes from Port of London Authority books and the Southwark History Library and the National Archives in Kew also worked on the project.

cancer patient takes to the road to support guy’s

A keen cyclist has raised nearly £20,000 for the NHS staff who have treated him for cancer at Guy’s Hospital.

Neighbours and cycling buddies Jeff Ward, 68, and Gary Colet, 62, from Mill Hill in north west London, recently completed a 54.2 mile cycle ride for the cancer team at Guy’s and the staff who treated Gary for Covid-19.

Some of the people who are treating Jeff also joined the bike ride, which was the equivalent of London to Brighton.

Jeff was diagnosed with a rare cancer called Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma (CTCL), which involves white blood cells that usually fight off infection attacking the skin, in 2007.

Just 200 people are diagnosed with CTCL each year. For most it remains a chronic condition but for about ten per cent of people the disease spreads and becomes life-threatening.

Jeff, a retired accountant who has two grandchildren, has been kept stable since 2007 by Guy’s dermatologist Professor Sean Whittaker and his colleague oncologist Dr Stephen Morris.

In March 2020 his neighbour Gary caught Covid-19 - spending three months in Barnet Hospital, including five weeks on a ventilator.

When he could finally go home, he had lost a third of his previous weight

and was much weaker. He got back into cycling with Jeff and slowly got stronger over several months.

But in November last year Jeff was told that the cancer had spread to his lymph nodes. He said: “This was a horrible shock to hear the cancer was now lifethreatening, especially as I’d felt so well.”

Doctors started him on a programme of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, but it was clear he also needed a stem cell transplant. Doctors looked for a suitable donor through the international register because Jeff does not have siblings.

They found one in the US, and the transplant is scheduled for June this year with Dr Renuka Palanicawander at Hammersmith Hospital Jeff said: “When my diagnosis came, I knew the best way I could deal with this, emotionally and physically was to focus on my fitness and also do something positive for the teams working so hard to keep me well.”

On April 17 Jeff and Gary cycled more than 50 miles and 2,500 feet of elevation from north-west London to Hertfordshire, after Jeff had completed ten sessions of chemotherapy.

Jeff mentioned to Prof. Whittaker and Dr Morris that he was doing the bike ride and joked that they had to go with him,

After completing the ride, Jeff said: “The ride was fantastic and we couldn’t have asked for better weather.

“Though the chemo has slowed me down, having everyone cycling with me really helped me to keep on going. I’m extremely thankful to everyone who has donated so far.”

Dr Stephen Morris said: “When Jeff first mentioned the ride it didn’t take long before Professor Whittaker and I decided we’d like to get involved too. It’s an amazing thing that Jeff and Gary have done and a testament to their determination to turn a difficult situation into something so positive.”

Tuppence Middleton on OCD with Maudsley doc

youngsters SHOWN HOW to fix bikes and then THEY GET to TAKE THEM HOME!

Actress Tuppence Middleton, who suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), has appeared on BBC Radio 4 with a doctor from the Maudsley Hospital to discuss the condition.

Fifteen young people in Walworth will learn how to fix a bicycle and earn a renovated bike of their own thanks to a new charity programme.

Middleton, known for her work in the Imitation Game, the Downton Abbey film and the BBC adaptation of War and Peace, has recorded a series about OCD for the corporation.

With the Maudsley’s Dr Gazal Jones, a clinical psychologist, she talked about what OCD does to the brain and the best ways of getting treatment.

Jones said in a statement: “OCD

can be an extremely distressing and debilitating condition. However, it is also treatable, with good recovery rates with cognitive behavioural therapy with exposure and response prevention.

“We hope that opening up the conversation around OCD as a condition, encourages sufferers to seek professional support, and provides hope for recovery.”

Southern Railway has donated bikes found abandoned at its stations to charity Cycle UK. These bikes have since been given to the Community Cycleworks group in Walworth, which runs ‘Build A Bike’ courses with Southwark schools and youth clubs.

The young people who take part can then keep the bike they fix.

The children learn how to fix a bike and are taught the mechanics of how a bike works - which should allow them to solve problems when

they are cycling in future, hopefully encouraging them to cycle more often Toby Edwards, a training officer for Cycling UK said: “Cycling UK is hugely grateful to Southern Railway for donating these abandoned bicycles which will make a real difference to the lives of children in South London.

“The ‘Build A Bike’ project run

by Community Cycleworks offers young people a chance to learn how to maintain and fix donated cycles which gives them or their family member a real sense of ownership and pride. Whether its cycling to school or riding for fun with their friends, hundreds of miles will

hopefully be clocked up once these bikes have been brought back to life.”

The millionth dose of Covid-19 vaccine for south-east London was delivered to the Maudsley Hospital last month.

David Bradley, Chief Executive of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust said of the delivery, which took place on April 22: “I am very proud of our vaccination team who have worked tirelessly to ensure our staff and people who use our services are protected against Covid-19. Thank you for all your hard work.

“The vaccine is the best protection

against Covid-19 – I would urge everyone to take up the offer of the vaccine when it is your turn.”

Remy Wesolowski, clinical Lead for the vaccine programme said: "This is a fantastic milestone in the rollout of the vaccine in South East London.

“We have a wonderful team of vaccinators at South London and Maudsley who, along with the wider multidisciplinary vaccine programme team have worked tirelessly over the last few months to protect our most valuable asset - our staff, who provide outstanding care for our service users and their carers each day.

“The programme has been a fantastic learning experience for all those contributing to its success. The team has laughed together, cried together, virtually hugged each other and readied ourselves each day to vaccinate as many people as possible."

Council leader gets the jab

Cllr Kieron Williams was vaccinated at the Lister Practice in Peckham last Monday, April 26.

“Well I’m delighted to say I’ve just had my first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine,” he said. “It was completely painless, I was in and out in no time at all, and the staff did an amazing job – a huge thank you to them and everyone who is helping [in] getting the vaccine out across our whole borough.

“I hope everyone knows by now that the vaccine is the best way to keep yourself safe from Covid-19 and it can really help us to control the virus across the population. So please go down and have yours as soon as you can. If you’re in one of the cohorts that is eligible, look out for the invite and speak to your GP if you’ve got any questions.”

Some 100,000 people have had their first vaccine shot in Southwark, but the borough has seen some of the lowest uptake rates in the country.

Free events on and off line at the newly built Castle Square

Free events in Castle Square shopping centre behind the railway station include live music and DJs, brass rubbing for kids and a business workshop for budding entrepreneurs later in May. The Elephant Trail is a free brass rubbing schemel for children to learn about elephants. Kids can write down what they discover on free crayons and paper as they move around the new ‘shopping centre’ based in the square.

Other free entertainment across the late May bank holiday weekend and school half term week includes live

music, DJs and other performers. This was first on from May 1-3 and will run again from May 29-June 6.

Street performers will also be in the square from May 8-9, May 15-16 and May 22-23.

Also on May 23, the local group Elephant and Castle Virtual Community Hub are putting on a series of movie-themed Zoom events including a film trivia quiz, fancy dress competition, dance routines, and a movie medley performed by Elephant & Castle Community Hub Choir.

Vote today - it’s more important than ever!

T

oday you can vote on the future direction of the city you live in - so please make sure you get out there and cast your vote if you have not already used your postal vote!

Now more than ever it is vital that all voices are heard in the first election since we were hit with the global pandemic. It is also the first election since Brexit and comes at a time where age-old problems are being made all the more acute by Covid – a continuing housing crisis, a climate emergency, struggling businesses, record unemployment and knife crime that has spiralled out of control.

Polling stations will be sanitised and socially distanced, and the council is asking that everyone wears their masks and bring their own pens. You don’t need to bring a polling card or anything else; so from 7am until 10pm today, Thursday 6th, make sure your voice is heard and cast your vote.

We always appeal to our readers to make the effort to take part in the democratic process, as everyone is affected by politics - and with the London Mayoral and GLA elections, your vote is arguably even more effective.

With the first-past-the-post system in general elections, your vote, while still important, is only for a Parliamentary constituency, and if enough of those are totted up by one party, they become the government. So your actual voting impact is fairly oblique - not to mention that you’re voting for a party, rather than a person.

With today’s elections, you can put your cross next to the mayoral candidate whom you think will best lead the capital forward for the next four years, along with your second favourite. Simply put, if enough people vote for a candidate, they become the next Mayor - so your vote, and every vote, counts.

You’ll also be voting for your GLA member, as well as for the party that controls the GLA, and again it’s important that you vote for this representative. The Mayor of London is given huge powers by the electorate - so it makes sense that as they’re voted in, you’re also deciding who will scrutinise their decisions and hold them to account. They can also petition the Mayor on behalf of your GLA constituency - in our case Southwark & Lambeth.

Of course, if you’re unaffected by the city’s housing crisis, if traffic congestion and pollution doesn’t impact on your daily life, if crime in your area doesn’t concern you, or the make-up of your local high street doesn’t interest you - along with one hundred other issues - then you’re probably right not to cast your vote. Chances are though, that there isn’t a Londoner among us who won’t be affected one way or the other by the new Mayor we vote in today.

December 2020, at King’s College Hospital, Denmark Hill, following a difficult illness. Will be much missed by friends, and family.

30 years have gone by, but it still feels like yesterday.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk KATIE WHITMORE was pleased with her side’s 4-2 friendly victory over Aylesford Ladies at St Paul’s last weekend as Millwall Lionesses bounced back after two consecutive defeats.

Goals from Shannan Drewe and Abbey Dell gave the hosts a comfortable victory over the Maidstone-based team, who play in the London & South East Regional Premier Division, one tier above the Lionesses.

The difference in league standings did not faze Whitmore’s team.

“Definitely a much better performance than the last two weeks, not just on the result, but how the girls were playing,” Whitmore said.

“They came back into training after the two defeats [against Kent Football United and Billericay Reserves] and really showed they didn’t want the same to happen against a higher-tier team, and they really didn’t look out of place.

“They really stood up and they really did well.”

Whitmore was critical last week of the Lionesses’ finishing in front of goal, and though the home side did not make more chances than in previous fixtures, they took them,

and Whitmore was delighted with her team’s cutting edge.

“We talked about being clinical, and I think we were clinical in the sense that we were trying to find that pass and we were clinical in our shooting,” she said. “The one challenge I told the girls was, ‘can you play two-touch?’ So get the ball out of your feet and have a shot from outside, rather than trying to walk it into the goal.

“That’s what they did and it paid off.”

Dell continues to impress for her side, contributing two goals last weekend.

Whitmore added: “Even with Abbey not shooting, she’s a superb player in the middle.

“She holds the ball up well, it bounces off her and today it was the Abbey Dell we had at the start of the season.

“We kept finding her feet, and Abbey pressing the ball was at the top of her game.”

Whitmore was also impressed with goalkeeper Millie Carter and her defence, who kept the visitors out in the second half.

Whitmore said: “So 2-2 at half-time, and not to concede in the second half, you could see every single one of that back five putting everything in front of that ball and making sure it didn’t go to Millie or making sure it didn’t get past their line.

sport@southwarknews.co.uk KEMAR ROACH’S superlative career-best 8 for 40 spearheaded Surrey’s completion of a crushing innings and 289-run victory against Hampshire, dismissed for 179 at the Kia Oval to be beaten inside three days last weekend.

Roach, the West Indies fast bowler, started Hampshire’s slide with a skilful 11-over new ball spell of 3 for 21 either side of lunch while veteran seamer Rikki Clarke chipped in with 2 for 31 after Surrey had declared their mammoth first innings on 560 for 7, a huge lead of 468.

And Roach then trapped both Liam Dawson for 33 and Scott Currie for 1 with wicked inswingers in a pre-tea burst

eight wickets in an innings for the first time in my career and it’s the best I have bowled this year so far. I put in a lot of work in the two previous games, without getting the rewards, so I am very proud to have done that today and to have played my part in getting a win for the team.

Now it is off to Leicestershire next week and hopefully we can carry this form on.

By Alex Grace at The Den sport@southwarknews.co.uk AS THE curtain came down on Millwall’s home campaign this season, all that was missing was the traditional lap of honour.

Alex Pearce has twice been denied the opportunity to lead his team-mates around the pitch to acknowledge supporters, as Covid-19 restrictions have disrupted two campaigns. And with his contract up at the end of the season, who knows if he will ever have that chance.

Despite no fans for the majority of the season, the Lions skipper kept his own ritual when leading the team out for the warm-up by clapping empty stands. So it would have been no surprise to see him lead a walk around an empty Den applauding those fans watching from home.

As it was, players and staff left the pitch soon after the final whistle. The hope is they won’t have to play another game in one of the most hostile grounds in English football without those that make it so.

In just over a week, boss Gary Rowett will sit down to properly review the season. The two things that will probably disappoint him most will be consistency and end product.

Ironically, given their struggles in front of goal in the last two seasons, it was the second consecutive campaign they signed off with a 4-1 win at home. That will give them plenty of hope and optimism going into next season.

Billy Mitchell will not forget the game in a hurry. The only downside for him was that there were no fans inside The Den to witness his first goal for the club and that quirky celebration, when he did three press-ups. Perhaps a nod to his hard work in the gym this season as he

recovered from two injuries.

Last Saturday, we perhaps got a glimpse of what we could see more of from Millwall in 2021-22.

Rowett has spoken a lot this season about moving the ball and making Millwall more of a passing side, without taking from their aggressive instincts. The Lions completed 459 accurate passes at a success rate of 83 per cent - a season’s best.

We also saw more opportunities for the academy products. Danny McNamara started alongside Mitchell and Hayden Muller came on with six minutes left. That shows Rowett’s continued confidence in Millwall’s young and emerging talent.

However, as new talents are breaking through, this season has again shown how integral an established star in Jed Wallace still is. His goal against the Robins was his eleventh of the campaign, one better than his total in 2019-20. The former Wolves man has also assisted six, meaning out of Millwall’s 47 league goals this campaign he has been directly involved in 36 per cent of them.

His record of 21 goals in the last two seasons is superb considering he is not a striker.

He took his goal brilliantly last weekend: The control to take the ball down from Scott Malone’s excellent long pass, the charge forward and the superb low finish into the far corner. Lions fans will be hoping that he puts pen to paper on a new long-term deal this summer.

Millwall found their clinical edge last weekend, but mistakes are still creeping in at the back. George Evans will not look back fondly on City’s equalising goal. As he stepped out of the Lions defence Henri Lansbury found Tommy Conway who had snuck in between Jake Cooper and Bartosz Bialkowski to be left with a simple finish.

Evans will hope Millwall don’t suffer a similar injury crisis at the back next season as his

best position is in midfield.

Malone, alongside Wallace, is a big contender for Millwall’s player of the season award. The on-loan Derby County man once again showed why Rowett is so keen to keep him in SE16.

His ball to Wallace for the first goal was then followed up by his sixth goal of the season, which restored Millwall’s lead before halftime. The impressive McNamara crossed and the ball glanced off Tomas Kalas’s head but only as far as Malone, whose effort struck the inside of the far post before landing in the bottom left corner.

McNamara would have broken his Millwall duck had it not been for a smart stop from Max O’Leary. McNamara surged through on goal but was denied by the palms of the Bristol City keeper.

Seven minutes into the second half came the moment Mitchell had long dreamed of.

The midfielder netted his first senior goal, into the Cold Blow Lane end, after both Evans and Cooper had efforts blocked in a mad scramble in the box. Mitchell rifled the loose ball into the roof of the net before his mini-gym session.

To cap it all, there was a delightful moment for Tom Bradshaw as he ended a fifteengame goal drought which had dated back to Millwall’s final game before Christmas, a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.

Bradshaw capitalised on an error by Robins captain Nathan Baker but still had plenty to do as he ran through one-on-one with O’Leary. His finish was neat as he clipped the ball into the bottom left corner and the relief on his face was clear to see.

There still remains some big questions going into the summer, with the futures of the likes of Pearce, Shaun Williams, Matt Smith, Shane Ferguson and Frank Fielding all yet to be known.

But Rowett has a clear idea of what is needed to get to the next level.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BART BIALKOWSKI hasn’t missed a minute of league action since his Millwall debut, has two top-half finishes and beat a personal record this season – but you won’t find the goalkeeper patting himself on the back this summer.

That’s because Bialkowski wants more.

Since the Polish stopper – who will turn 34 in July – replaced the injured Frank Fielding on the opening day in 201920, he has been an ever-present in the Championship – 8,147 minutes of football.

Not even a broken finger this season and playing with splints for almost two months could stop him. Bialkowski shared the Golden Glove last season with Brentford’s David Raya with a career-best sixteen clean sheets. He’s gone one better this campaign, and could still finish joint-second with Norwich’s Tm Krul who has eighteen, two behind Swansea’s Freddie Woodman.

Balkowski knows what it takes to get into the play-offs. He did it under Mick McCarthy at Ipswich in his first season with the club in 2014-15, before the Tractor Boys lost to Norwich in the semi-finals.

McCarthy’s side just missed out the following campaign as they finished seventh.

Millwall finished eighth last season and can still end up in ninth after this weekend’s final game against Coventry, having already guaranteed they will be in the top twelve.

So when it’s put to Bialkowski that a second consecutive top-half finish

in the Championship is something to shout about, he hesitates before giving a measured response.

“It’s nice to finish the season as high as you can,” he says. “We’ve had a few injures, we were hit by Covid as well. There’s been so many games in such a short period of time.

“We’ve got something good to build on for next season and hopefully we can push for the play-offs. I’m sure the gaffer will bring two or three new players in.

“We’ve got a decent squad defensively but we’re just lacking a few goals. I’m sure he will be looking at it.

“Last season I beat my personal record in terms of keeping clean sheets and this season I’ve managed to beat t again.

“It’s another step forward and the aim for next year will be to beat that again.

“Obviously they’ve been two good seasons, consistent seasons. Previous years, apart from my last year at Ipswich, have been very good.

“I’m feeling good. I feel hungry for more, I still want to achieve something great at Millwall.

“I’m just really looking forward to the next season, hopefully it’s going to be an even better one.”

It will certainly be a different one, with fans set to return to stadiums. Bialkowski feels the lack of supporters making The Den one of the most intimidating grounds in the Championship has cost them.

Millwall are currently sixteenth in the table based on results at home this season, ninth away.

Last season, when there were fans at games until March, they were ninth based on home form.

Millwall have already sold more than

4,500 season tickets for 2021-22.

“I think this season our home form has cost us, maybe even the play-offs, I would say,” Bialkowski said. “We haven’t played as well at home this year.

“That’s mainly because we haven’t had fans to support us. They’ve been our twelfth player and have pushed us to play better every single game.

“The number of games we’ve won, especially in the last five, ten minutes, was because they were always behind us and motivated us to play to our limits at times.

“We’ve missed that this year. But hopefully next season it’s going to be a different story. The fans are going to be back in and then with the new additions we can achieve something better.

“It’s been crazy, we all need a break physically and mentally. It’s been very challenging.

“It’s very challenging mentally as a goalkeeper. Sometimes you don’t have much to do the whole game and then last minute of the game you need to be ready.

“Most of the time as a goalkeeper I’m more mentally tired than physically. But since the first day of last season I’ve never looked back.

“I enjoy playing every week, I want to play every single week. All I need to do is keep fit and keep playing well to be the first player on the team sheet.”

Bialkowski’s run of consecutive league games could have ended when he suffered that finger break in a warm-up before a game. Anyone who has seen goalkeeping coach Lee Turner sending rasping shots Bialkowski’s way probably wouldn’t have been surprised that one of them did the damage.

The goalkeeper has been behind one of the best defences in the league his ring finger on his left hand. It made punching and catching the ball a challenge, yet he could still end the season as part of the best defence outside the top five.

“I took a couple of pills,” he laughs as he recalls the injury. “I had splints on for almost two months.

“For the first couple of weeks it was uncomfortable, I couldn’t really bend my finger. After a couple of weeks it was okay.

“My finger is not in the perfect condition right now. It’s slightly bent, I can’t straighten it. But it’s okay, it’s not painful or causing me any problems.

“Sometimes you need to use both hands to punch the ball. That was the main issue, I couldn’t bend my finger at all. I couldn’t punch the ball properly.

“You always try to catch the ball first, the punch is the second thing to do. But there aren’t many times you have to do that in a game.

“I managed to catch the ball so it’s

possible!”

Millwall’s defensive performance over the season is all the more impressive as at various times they’ve been without Shaun Hutchinson, Murray Wallace and Jake Cooper.

Bialkowski praised the resilience of all those in front of him.

He said: “They’ve done amazingly, they’ve been rock solid at the back. Sometimes they’ve got me out of trouble, sometimes I’m helping them.

“We’ve got a good relationship and understanding, we know our strengths and weaknesses. We’re always looking to help each other.

“When you’re solid at the back it gives you a platform to win any game.

“We have been lacking goals this season, which has been our main problem, due to injuries. Having that base at the back gives you a really good chance to achieve something.”

Three relegated sides could go straight back up as parachute payments create disparity

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk THE ONLY major issue to be decided on the final day is which two clubs will join Wycombe Wanderers in being relegated from the Championship.

The Chairboys aren’t mathematically down yet, but they need an unlikely swing in goal difference with only one game left to survive.

If Rotherham are relegated, then only one team out of those that came down from the Premier League and those that got promoted last season from League One will be in the Championship in 202122.

That is Millwall’s opponents this weekend, Coventry.

That points to a major imbalance in the Championship.

Norwich and Watford, relegated last season, have already been promoted. If Bournemouth join them through the playoffs the three relegated teams will all have gone straight back up.

Clubs relegated from the Premier League receive parachute payments of almost £100million over two or three years.

That has helped Norwich keep the likes of Max Aarons and Todd Cantwell, who were both rated in the £20million bracket last summer after impressing in the 201920 season despite the Canaries’ relegation.

Watford were under no pressure to offload £30million Ismaila Sarr, scorer of their winner against Millwall recently.

And Bournemouth could retain another £30million signing, Jefferson Lerma.

Of course it’s not always the case that sides relegated from the top flight bounce back to get promoted or at least challenge for promotion. You only have to look at the likes of Hull City and Sunderland to see that.

But this season in particular has emphasised how much of a financial advantage clubs that come down do have, even after just one season in the top flight.

Brentford are aiming for a first promotion to the Premier League after building through a brilliant recruitment structure. But they have also splashed out transfer fees of up to £6million on players, a level Millwall are nowhere near.

Swansea were in the Premier League as recently as 2017-18, so have received another parachute payment this season.

Barnsley have done remarkably well to buck the financial trend and if Valerien Ismael leads them to promotion it will be one of the great managerial achievements in the Championship.

When you add in Cardiff, Middlesbrough, Stoke City and Huddersfield who have also benefitted from parachute payments it’s no wonder it’s such a struggle at the other end of the table for clubs such as Wycombe and Rotherham to compete.

Covid-19 and the restrictions to try to contain it, including no fans in stadiums and therefore no gate income, has also shone a light on financial disparities in the game.

Last May, EFL chairman Rick Parry told a House of Commons digital, culture, media and sport committee that parachute payments should be discontinued.

“We need a complete reset and we need to look at the redistribution of revenues,” he said. “Parachute payments are an evil that needs to be eradicated.

“We have six clubs in the Championship receiving parachute payments which means on average they get £40m per club.

The other eighteen get £4.5m each. “[Parachute payments] are a prime example of the Premier League clubs [who got relegated] being protected either to help them to get back into the Premier

League quickly or help them adjust to the financial chasm, whichever way you may describe it.

“But they are a symptom of the chasm, if we didn’t have the chasm in the first place you wouldn’t need the parachute payments. You could have a much fairer distribution system.”

A Premier League spokesperson defended the payments.

“Parachute payments give newly promoted clubs the confidence to invest in their squads to be competitive in the Premier League,” the spokesperson told Sky Sports.

“They are also a vital mechanism to give relegated clubs financial support while adjusting to significantly lower revenues and having a higher cost base related to their playing squads.

“The Championship is a highly competitive league with attendances, viewing figures and revenues the envy of second-tier leagues around the world.

“We see no evidence that parachute payments distort performance at that level and are an essential part of this highly competitive environment.

It shows how well Millwall have done to secure a second consecutive top-twelve finish – their third in four seasons – when eight of the other eleven teams in the top half have been in the Premier League in the last decade.

The Lions have to find a different route into the top six. You wouldn’t exactly call them cast-offs, but Mason Bennett, George Evans and Scott Malone arrived from Derby after not being regulars there.

Bart Bialkowski – one of the best goalkeepers in the league in the last two

seasons – came from League One Ipswich.

Millwall took risks signing Troy Parrott and Kenneth Zohore on loan from Premier League Tottenham and West Brom and were unfortunate that injuries were the main obstacles to those gambles perhaps paying off.

But it will be a similar story in the transfer market this summer: Trying to get those players other clubs may have missed, or those players that aren’t a fit for their current clubs but could be for Millwall.

Head of recruitment Harvey Bussell also has a good knowledge of European leagues so the club could reach out that bit further in the next transfer window.

Millwall have good foundations on which to build and could almost call themselves an established Championship side.

But there is a warning from the relatively recent past of how quickly things can change.

The summer of 2005 was shaping up to be a significant one after successive topten finishes in the second tier and an FA Cup final under Dennis Wise.

But the club didn’t build on it as Wise left after the final game of the 2004-05 campaign and the Lions were relegated the following season.

Millwall are a far more stable club now, and there is no chance of Gary Rowett walking away when he has spoken recently with such enthusiasm about strengthening his squad in the summer.

The Lions need to take that next step to avoid the perception that they have hit their ceiling if next season brings similar results and a mid-table finish.

With a strong core of the squad in place, and fans returning next August – and despite the financial advantages of others – Millwall have rarely been in a better position to go to that next level.

Gary Rowett’s wife recalls summers by transfer targets

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk WHILE MILLWALL’S players head into their deserved summer break next Monday there will be no rest for Gary Rowett – and the Lions boss might even be spotted around some pool trying to do deals.

That could be more a metaphorical description this time with doubts still over whether there will be foreign holidays in the sun, but Rowett jokes his wife recalls summers by the names of top transfer targets.

The summer of 2017 at Derby was Tom Lawrence, the following year at Stoke was the summer of £10million Tom Ince, or Sam Clucas, or perhaps even Ryan Woods.

There was a rare summer off between jobs in 2019 before last summer, which Rowett’s wife will probably know as the Troy Parrott one.

After this Saturday’s game at Coventry, Rowett will stay in his native Midlands and with the football out of the way fully focus on transfer plans with head of recruitment Harvey Bussell.

“What you tend to do as a manager and most managers will do the same, you try to organise what you need to do for next season. So pre-season schedule, pre-season games, a tour if there is any,” Rowett explained.

“And also some of the adjustments that you need to make around the training ground before next season.

“Then it’s on to recruitment. Most of it is done away from the training

ground. I’m a big believer that when you only get limited time off every year to spend a bit of time with your family, it’s pointless coming into the office every day when there’s not anyone in.

“What we tend to do is work remotely. I’ll speak to Harvey every day, the staff every day.

“I’m sure we’ll be walking around some holiday destination – whether that’s the UK or abroad, we’ll find out – speaking on the phone to agents trying to get deals done.

“We know what we want, we know what we need and we have good targets. As usual then it’s a game to see how quickly we can get them over the line and if we can get them over the line.

“That’s the unknown as you head into every summer.

not as busy in the summer. So often when the season finishes you usually get a week or two when it’s quite busy, people like to think they can get stuff done.

“But then you tend to have a couple of weeks when not much happens and everyone seems to be doing other things.

“Every summer for the last ten years I can tell you different holidays and differint pools I’ve walked around talking about signing certain players.

“My wife names each holiday by the player I’m most trying to sign, because that’s what I probably spend most time doing, unfortunately.

“You try to have a break and refresh, but the reality is next season is essentially going to be defined by who we sign over the next six to ten weeks.

So it’s important.”

Evans – who joined from Derby in January – is the latest player to laud the spirit in the Lions’ dressing room.

That will be an important selling point in pitches to transfer targets this summer, with the likes of other Rowett recruits in Mason Bennett and Ryan Woods also commenting on the togetherness of the squad.

“That’s why I think we’ve got a fabulous chance to build on what we’ve done so far next season,” Rowett said. “Because I think the mentality of the group is excellent.

“Players talk individually about how good the spirit is. You get someone like George Evans who comes in and says it’s the most he’s enjoyed his football, and he’s been at some very, very good clubs.

“So I think the culture at Millwall is fabulous and that’s partly been built by myself and the staff and partly been built previously taking into account the traditions of the club and what the club dictates.

“It’s a bit of a melting pot. But it’s brilliant and it gives you a strong foundation.

“The fact that the players put in such a good performance [against Bristol City] when you could forgive them for maybe not shows how much they want to win and do well.

“When I watched the game back it was probably even more impressive than I thought it was on the day. The way we moved the ball, our movement, closing down off the ball. It was a really nicely balanced game and the type of game I really enjoy.”
