The brother of former Labour leader has faced arrests over lockdown protests

Piers Corbyn, the man-made climate change denier, antilockdown activist and anti-vaxxer from Walworth is among the record twenty candidates standing in the mayoral election next month.

He is standing on behalf of the ‘Let London Live’ party, and pledges to end all lockdowns, spend more on serious illnesses, end homelesness and defend council housing, stop the ULEZ roll out, and promises no vaccine passports.

Anti-vaxxer Corbyn has been repeatedly arrested since the first lockdown restrictions were put in place during a series of rule-breaking protests. He was also investigated over handing out leaflets that are claimed to equate the vaccination programme with the Holocaust.

Another mayoral candidate from Southwark is the Social Democratic

Party’s Steven Kelleher, who describes himself as “Born and bred in Bermondsey to an Irish immigrant family, I grew up on a council estate near the Elephant and Castle.

“I was fortunate to go to a grammar school. I’m a father of five, and have coached cricket in London for many years and work in recruitment in the City.”

Their chances of making a dent in Sadiq Khan’s expected huge majority are miniscule.

The Liberal Democrat candidate Siobhan Benita was replaced by Luisa Porrit, while the Women’s Equality Party’s Sue Black was replaced by Mandu Reid due to the toll health issues caused by vaginal mesh surgery.

Among the established parties, they are competing against the Green Party’s Sian Berry, Conservative Shaun Bailey and UKIP’s Peter Gammons.

Another high profile independent candidate is the actor and ‘anti-woke’ activist Laurence Fox. Also running on an anti-lockdown platform, Fox pledges to ‘take the politics out of policing’, make buses and tubes cheaper and reduce cycle lanes, and wants to stop statues being removed and street names changed to ‘preserve our history’.

Other independents are Niko Omilana, Farah London, and Max Fosh and Nims Obunge.

A number of fringe parties have also fielded candidates.

Kam Balayev is standing on behalf of Renew; Valerie Brown for the Burning Pink party; Rejoin the EU has put forward Richard Hewison; Vanessa Hudson is standing for the Animal Welfare Party, the Heritage Party has put forward David Kurten and Brian Rose is running for the Real London Party.

Remarkably, Rose is increasingly considered to be second favourite ahead of the Conservative’s Bailey, who was previously predicted to get around 26 per cent of the vote.

Count Binface is also back - and he wants to name London Bridge after comedian and actress Phoebe Waller…

Rory Stewart, the ex-Tory MP running as an independent, dropped out last year citing the financial difficulties caused by delaying the vote from May 2020 due to COVID-19.

Two other candidates also stood down though were replaced, likely working in Khan’s favour.

In the last five months, more than 60,000 people have fled the region into refugee camps in Sudan. At least a million are internally displaced and more than four million left without food security due to destruction of crops and livestock.

Around 70 per cent of health facilities are reported to have been looted or vandalised.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has described the food security situation as ‘catastrophic’ and reported continuing human rights abuses and severe malnutrition among young children.

In her speech, Hayes said there was clear evidence civilians were being targeted because of their Tigrayan ethnicity, and said the violence towards Tigrayan women looked ‘genocidal’.

She told MPs: “What especially stands out are the ferocity of the attacks, which is evident from reports and photographs of injuries to women, including the mutilation of women’s genitals, and the targeting of women because they are Tigrayan.

“The rapists have talked of “Amharanising” the women and purifying their blood.

“The use of rape as a weapon of war is always abhorrent and heinous, but for soldiers to claim to be purifying or cleansing women by raping them makes this violence look genocidal.

“What also stands out is the impunity. There is no indication that either the Ethiopian or Eritrean Governments are taking any steps whatsoever to rein in their troops.

“Those responsible for the sexual violence inflict it with complete impunity.

Dulwich MP calls for intervention in Ethiopia

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Helen Hayes raised the plight of millions affected by the conflict in Ethiopia’s Tigray region in parliament last week, calling on the government to intervene after reports of ethnic massacres and mass rapes.

The Dulwich and West Norwood MP secured a House of Commons debate on the situation, which has escalated since last November when the conflict flared between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. A government retaliation left the entire region cut off as troops moved in.

It is now estimated that 10,000 women in the region have been raped by soldiers.

“On Tuesday, the Ethiopian Government admitted there had been sexual assaults on women in Tigray, but sought to justify it as a consequence of the conflict.”

She called on the UK government to suspend parts of its bilateral aid programme to the Ethiopian government, and introduce targeted sanctions against those responsible in Ethiopia and Eritrea, and to push the UN Security Council to bring forward prosecutions for war crimes.

In response to her speech, Middle East and North Africa minister James Cleverly said “The United Kingdom will continue to engage comprehensively with Ethiopia and to lead co-ordination with international partners in pressing for a political solution to this conflict that brings about an end to the violence” but fell short of committing to her demands.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The family of a Charter School head girl who died from a rare form of blood cancer last year have raised £10,000 for leukaemia research at a special dinner event.

Ruby Fuller, from Herne Hill, was just seventeen when she was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic non-Hodgkin lymphoma in July 2019.

After receiving chemotherapy, radiotherapy and a stem cell transplant, she went into remission in February 2020.

Just weeks later, doctors discovered her cancer had returned and had developed into leukaemia. She passed away in May 2020, asking her friends and family to carry on her legacy of kindness and calling out injustice, and to follow her motto of ‘Live Kindly, Live Loudly’.

After her death, Ruby’s parents Emma and Dylan set up a fund in her memory to raise much-needed money for research for the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group.

To date, Ruby’s Live Kindly Live Loudly fund has raised more than £55,000 with the help of friends, family and the wider Charter School North Dulwich community.

Last month a further £10,000 was raised at ‘Ruby’s Dinner Party’, an online cookalong hosted by Wagamama’s head chef Steve Mangleshot, who demonstrated how to cook Ruby’s bestloved dishes, including katsu and gyoza.

Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes was one of those in attendance.

She described Ruby as an ‘inspiration to many’.

Emma told the News: “The evening was a great success, with almost 300 people joining in to cook their very own yasai katsu curry.

“Ruby loved Wagamama and craved their food while going through chemo and we planned a big meal out with all her friends to celebrate once she was out of isolation post-transplant.

“But then her cancer relapsed and we all knew she didn't have long.

“The country was in lockdown at the time, so we couldn't even go out for dinner, so one of my oldest friends contacted Wagamama and asked if they could arrange a delivery.

“They were very moved by the story and Steve personally cooked and delivered her favourite food to our house.

“This was just 36 hours before Ruby died. It was a very lovely gesture and meant the world to her.

“I wrote to him to say thank you, and he

Ruby a few weeks before she died in May 2020 during lockdown asked if there was anything he could do to help, and the idea of doing a cooking demo of Ruby's favourite food came to me. After she died, Ruby’s consultant told us that in cases like hers, they don’t have the answers yet, but she hoped they would very soon.

“The only way they will do that is with funding. We all want to be able to improve the chances of others that are unlucky enough to be diagnosed with this in future.”

In a cruel twist of fate 2020 was a year of double tragedy for the Charter School in Dulwich after Karla Pappon, an assistant special educational needs coordinator, passed away in October.

She was involved in an accident during a London to Brighton sponsored ride with nineteen other members of staff in September, held in honour of Ruby.

More than £15,000 was raised towards Ruby’s fund from the bike ride.

The family have set an ambitious target of raising £100,000 by the end of the year - and are already two thirds of the way to achieving it.

Expectant mums can have vaccine

Vaccine rates still low

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark’s vaccination rates are still some of the lowest in the country, despite huge efforts to boost uptake.

More than 75 per cent of over 65s have now been vaccinated in Southwark and the proportion of over 75s to receive at least a first jab is higher, at 80 per cent.

So far, more than 94,000 people have been given their first vaccine in the borough, including over 90 per cent of care home residents.

But due to the significant minority still unvaccinated in these groups, London boroughs are still lagging behind the rest of the country on the vaccine roll out.

Although the latest figures up to April 4 showing Southwark had vaccinated

84 per cent of over 50s may seem impressive, it puts the borough twelfth worst out of all 314 local authorities.

To put this in context, across the country over 50s coverage is now at 94 per cent and top performing midlands town Stratford-Upon-Avon has given jabs to everyone in this age group.

Westminster’s vaccine coverage for the over 50s was the lowest in the country at just 65.7 per cent.

COVID-19 cases remain very low in Southwark. On Monday, fifteen cases were identified, down from 698 on December 29, at the height of the winter wave.

In response to huge queues at testing centres last week, Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes, whose constituency includes parts of Lambeth, said: “Thanks to everyone who has turned up to be tested so far. I understand that problems yesterday with queuing and supply of test kits are being resolved. Please do try again if you had problems, the surge testing will be available for two weeks.

“I’m told by public health officials that the risk of contracting the South African variant is currently small.

“If everyone takes a test as soon as possible we can keep it that way, stop it from spreading any further and stay safe.”

More concerning to scientists is a new strain of the virus first discovered in India which is now the global centre for new COVID-19 cases.

The Indian variant contains two mutations which could make it less resistant to vaccines - though there is not enough research to confirm this either way.

According to the COVID-19 Genomics

UK Consortium, which analyses COVID variants, as of Monday 182 cases of the Indian variant had been identified in the UK. The majority (162) were found within the last five weeks.

The country will now be on the government’s travel ‘red list’ from Friday, April 23.

Health secretary Matt Hancock told MPs the ‘vast majority’ of cases were linked to international travel and had been picked up through routine testing measures.

Many MPs had expressed frustration the country had not been red listed sooner including Labour’s Yvette Cooper.

She says the government is still failing to learn lessons quickly enough.

In parliament last week she told MPs: “The Health Secretary is clearly right to put India on the red list and to safeguard the vaccine programme from new variants.

“However, the India variant has been under investigation for three weeks, and other neighbouring countries with lower and slower COVID rates were put on the red list ten days ago.

“This week, Hong Kong identified 47 COVID cases on a single Delhi flight.

“Before Friday, we still had 16 direct flights from India and many more indirect ones.”

Concerns over South African variant

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk There are concerns over the potential for the South African variant, which is believed to be potentially more transmissible, taking hold in care homes where some residents are still unvaccinated.

Last week we reported that everyone who lives, works and travels through Lambeth was being urged to get a COVID-19 test in the largest surge testing operation to date - also taking place in Wandsworth and Rotherhithe.

Forty-four confirmed cases and 30 ‘probable’ cases of the South African variant had been identified in Lambeth at the time.

It has since emerged that the borough has the lowest percentage of vaccinated care home staff in England - at just 50.1 per cent. At least one care home in the borough has reported cases of the variant.

On Monday, thousands of testing kits were being delivered to schools in Wandsworth, while surge testing is also taking place in Barnet, Hillingdon and Harrow after South Africa cases were identified.

Walk-in pop up vaccination centres have also been taking place around Southwark to reach those who are eligible but still unvaccinated, including at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital on Saturday, April 17, in Peckham Square on Sunday April 18, and at Albrighton Community Centre on Monday. The NHS is also urging patients to continue being vaccinated during Ramadan.

Could there be a return to lockdowns?

Some government advisors are concerned about the rapid growth of cases of the new variants in London and what it could mean for infection rates.

Professor John Edmunds, an epidemiologist based at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and SAGE adviser gave a television interview last week where he said vaccination was key but would take time.

“What we are looking at in south London is an example of what we will see now in the coming months as we try our best to keep that variant out or at as low a level we possibly can,” he said He added that it was ‘possible’ that ‘some sort of local restrictions’ would have to be imposed if mass testing did not stop the variant from spreading.

Pregnant women in the UK have now been told it is safe to have a COVID-19 vaccine.

All expectant mothers will be offered either Moderna or Pfizer jabs when their age group or clinical risk group is eligible.

Although pregnant women are usually excluded from clinical trials, the greenlight was given by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation last week after analysing data showing 90,000 pregnant women had been safely vaccinated in the USA. Although pregnant women are not believed to be more likely to be infected, they are at greater risk of complications from the virus - especially in the later stages of pregnancy after 28 weeks.

Hospital admissions drop to just a few a day A trickle of COVID-19 patients are now being admitted to hospitals in south London compared to a peak of 45 on March 20, 2020.

The latest available data up to April 17 show just three COVID-19 patients were admitted to King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s sites on Sunday, April 11. At Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals, the same figure was just two.

Fifty-six COVID-19 patients were being treated at King’s hospitals as of Tuesday, April 13; eighteen of whom were on ventilators. It is a marked drop since early January when the seven-day average daily admissions were as high as 105.

Meanwhile, at Guy’s sites there were 32 COVID-19 patients recorded inpatients, 21 of whom were on ventilators.

The study, led by the University of Edinburgh in partnership with Genomics England, is looking at how someone’s genes affect the severity of their illness, in the hope that this can help develop new treatments.

Researchers say they need 2,500 from all backgrounds to join the next phase of the study, and in particular need more men and more black and Asian participants.

The first temporary centres where blood samples can be given will open on Saturday, April 24, in Lambeth, Croydon, Barking and Barnet.

Anyone who wants to take part but does not wish to travel can also book a home visit by a nurse.

More centres are scheduled to open across the city in the coming weeks.

“Tragically, the virus’ effect has been more widely felt among ethnic and minority communities, so it’s important we help those who are making such an important contribution in the fight against COVID”, said Aman Ali from Muslim Engagement and Development.

Scientists from a groundbreaking COVID-19 genetic research study are calling Londoners who came down with the virus to donate blood in ‘pop up’ centres across London.

“We need to find people who tested positive for COVID but experienced either mild or no symptoms and didn’t require hospital treatment.

“To maximise the study’s potential, it’s important these volunteers are similar in age, gender and ethnicity of those

people who were severely affected and hospitalised.”

“The quicker this research can be completed, the faster we can solve the COVID puzzle and protect vulnerable people,” said Professor Sir Mark Caulfied, chief scientist at Genomics England.

“Genetic research into COVID-19 is now playing an increasingly important role in our fight against the virus, enabling us to identify new forms of the virus and develop treatments.

“The findings from the GenOMICC COVID-19 Study will improve the treatment, care and outcome for those most at risk and lower the number of deaths.”

The council’s temporary testing centre at Deal Porter Square next to Canada Water Library will remain in place until next Monday, April 26, having opened on Wednesday, April 14. The centre operates from 9am to 3pm. Tests are carried out onsite.

The local authority said it handed out more than 1,500 Covid-19 tests on the first day of surge testing last Wednesday, April 14. Everyone in the area also got a letter explaining the situation.

Sangeeta Leahy, Director of Public Health at Southwark Council, said: “The response of our residents from these households has been really positive. We thank people for their support with the ongoing targeted testing in their area and encourage residents and local businesses to take and return a test if we ask them to.”

You can also collect a home testing kit from Canada Water Library Theatre at 21 Surrey Quays Road

between 9am and 5pm every day.

Access is via the fire door at the rear of the library, not the main entrance.

The letter tells residents that “there is no cause for alarm” and the increased testing is just a “precaution”.

The South African variant is thought to spread particularly easily and there are concerns it could also make vaccines less effective – which might leave those in clinically vulnerable groups at risk even if they have received their jabs.

London mayor Sadiq Khan added: “Additional testing will be taking place in a targeted area within SE16 in Southwark after a confirmed case of the COVID-19 variant first discovered in South Africa was found.

“It’s vital that all those who are asked to take a PCR test in this area do so, regardless of whether they have symptoms or not.

“This testing is essential to help monitor and suppress the spread of the virus.”

Residents have faced large crowds in Bermondsey’s Potter’s Fields

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk People living in the area around Tower Bridge have said that last weekend saw considerably less anti-social behaviour than in recent weeks, suggesting the major police crackdown had an impact - but locals have urged officers “not to get complacent”.

Some 40 Met Police officers descended on the area around Potters Fields Park over the weekend, a popular meeting place in the shadow of City Hall, in a bid to halt a repeat of the “sinister” anti-social behaviour witnessed over the past two weeks as lockdown eased. British Transport Police and City of London Police joined them on the scene.

Officers also put in a dispersal order from 3pm on Friday, April 16, to 5am

on Sunday, April 18. The area ran from Waterloo Bridge in the west to George Row, east of Tower Bridge. Police also have the power to confiscate alcohol if they think it could lead to anti-social behaviour.

People living nearby have complained of a “dark” atmosphere in the park since the Easter weekend. Mostly young people have been roaming around, with some dealing drugs, playing loud music and urinating and defecating in the park. Revellers mostly come from Essex, police have said, and arrange meetings via Snapchat.

This weekend appeared to be different. While very busy on Saturday afternoon, most people appeared to be enjoying themselves without becoming aggressive.

One Shad Thames resident said: “There were teams of police officers looking at maps of the dispersal order

on Friday evening, and waving their arms around.

The same man added that he later saw “kids whingeing about there being too many ‘feds’, and planning where else to go, which was a good sign for us.

“It was busy but the police were doing a great job at breaking the back of it. There was a bit of noise through the evening - not vast amounts of disturbance at all.”

Nevertheless, other Shad Thames residents complained of large, noisy gatherings of drunken people on Saturday evening, as well as a fight by City Hall.

And locals have urged police not to hold back after one relatively successful weekend.

Andrea called the police when she got back home and could use her partner’s phone, but officers later said there was nothing they could do.

“My baby was born during the lockdown, and we were so together as a family, with my older child too. All of those pictures and videos were on that phone.”

Andrea is a tour guide in normal times and all of her valuable business contacts that she built up over her career were on the phone - meaning she now has to start again.

Unfortunately, Andrea said that she had not backed up her phone, meaning the photos are only on the device.

“I never thought of it, but now I feel terrible,” she said.

To make matters worse, her “very close” friend in Paris died the same night and Andrea was unable to be in contact with or her own family to send condolences.

She is in despair and has begged whoever took the phone to take pity on her and give it back - without fear of repercussions. She said that if she could pass a message to the thief, it would be to leave the phone on the customer service desk of the Tesco and say they found it.

“All I want is the phone back - it means

so much to me, much more than just a phone.”

A spokesperson for the Met Police said: “On the evening of Monday, 12 April, police received a report from a woman who believed her phone had been stolen in Surrey Quays Shopping Centre. Officers did not attend as the alleged offence had taken place some hours earlier. Follow up enquiries were conducted but an assessment of the available evidence determined there was no realistic prospect of identifying any suspects. The case has been closed.”

Andrea Sandi, who lives in Bermondsey, was shopping in the Tesco in Surrey Quays last Monday, April 12, with her ten-month-old baby in a pushchair.

She put the Samsung Galaxy A50 in a pocket at the back of the pushchair, and while her attention was briefly elsewhere, the phone disappeared.

Andrea (pictured) told Tesco’s customer service and the phone rang, showing it was still on. “I was very happy because I thought someone in the shop had it and was going to bring it to me,” she said. But the phone was then switched off.

The increase in police came after locals complained of “a sea of teenagers” outside, “shouting, hollering” and abusing street cleaners in recent weeks.

“This has taken a deeply sinister tone,” one man told a neighbourhood meeting to discuss the problem. “When the air is so heavily laden with cannabis that a simple walk across the park is enough to get you high, something is… very dark and very sinister.”

Two weekends ago the scenes took a violent turn as a young man was stabbed near City Hall in the early hours of Sunday morning, April 11. There was also a brawl near the McDonald’s on Tooley Street.

The News recently reported that parts of Potters Fields could be fenced off at night to help curb anti-social behaviour.

The organisation that manages the park has now said fencing off the park is one of several options under consideration but “there are no plans to do this at present”.

A spokesperson for the Potters Fields Park Management Trust said: “The Trust will continue to work closely with the police, neighbouring landowners and others on practical measures to help curb the recent behaviour, so that everyone can enjoy the Park and surrounding areas safely, legally and considerately.”

Four people charged with Sydenham murder of teenager Levi

On Tuesday, April 20, police charged two teenage boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, with murder and possession of an offensive weapon. They are aged fourteen and fifteen.

Both appeared in custody at Bromley Youth Court and were remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on Thursday, April 24.

They are the third and fourth people to be charged in connection to the attack.

Thirty-six-year-old Nichola Leighton from Sydenham’s Lockwood Close and a seventeen-year-old boy who cannot be named have both been remanded in custody after being charged with murder. A date for the trial has not been set. The developments in the case come as a fundraiser set up by Levi’s bereaved family raised more than £11,000 in just a few days to help cover the costs of his funeral.

Set up by JF and Kayla Ernest, the page has received support from more than 400 donors, many of whom left tributes to the seventeen-year-old victim.

In a tribute, the page said: “Levi was an intelligent and loving boy.

“He was a beautiful son, a playful brother, a loving grandson, godson and nephew, a devoted boyfriend and a loyal friend.”

Twenty per cent of donations made to the fundraiser will be given to livesnotknives.org.

Man and women rescued

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Two people were rushed to hospital after a fire broke out in a pub in Forest Hill.

Forty firefighters in six fire engines from three stations scrambled to put out the blaze at the Bird in Hand pub on Dartmouth Road at 8.52am on Wednesday morning, April 14. The fire was under control about an hour later.

Firefighters remained on the scene for hours afterwards, with local roads closed and people asked to stay away.

A man and a woman were taken to hospital. Three people left the pub before the London Fire Brigade arrived.

Most of the first floor and part of the roof were damaged in the blaze.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Station Commander Verona Clarke, who was at the scene, said: "Crews are expected to remain on scene for a number of hours damping down.

Road closures are in place and we ask people to avoid the local area.

"One of the Brigade's new 32-metre turntable ladders from Forest Hill Fire Station attended the scene."

Some businesses wanted to mimic the Soho set-up

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Bermondsey Street businesses have been told to “go elsewhere” if they don’t feel they’re making enough money, after residents raised fears of anti-social behaviour if the road were to be closed to traffic.

Locals, businesses and Liberal Democrat councillor Damian O’Brien met last week over a proposal to close Bermondsey Street to traffic, to let bars and restaurants seat customers in the road.

The plans, which would mimic steps taken by streets in Soho to maximise the number of people restaurants can serve after lockdown, were put forward by local bars and restaurants in an attempt to maximise their customer numbers after lockdown.

But Cllr O’Brien, who as a Lib Dem is in opposition, told businesses that it would not be possible to close the road fully because of the disruption to residents and difficulties for local drivers, for whom Bermondsey Street is an important thoroughfare.

He later told the News: “A carte blanche closing of Bermondsey Street is just not possible.

“I was quite forthright with them. If you’re struggling to make any money out of your venues, as a business you have the opportunity to not renew your lease, and go elsewhere. In my mind the highest priority is the people who live there.

“I’m not trying to say we don’t want them. The reality is businesses are not

as important as the residents.”

O’Brien said the reaction from businesses to his comments “was actually very positive”.

Locals are worried that a full road closure could cause a repeat of the bad behaviour Shad Thames residents have complained of a few minutes’ walk away in Potters Fields.

“There’s always going to be a natural conflict between the night time economy and the people who live there,” O’Brien added. “You have people who have a few beers or a few glasses of wine and get a bit lairy.

“It does affect the quality of life for the people who live there. Obviously the traders have been doing some hard yards and we want to support them too, but people who live in the area can’t just up and move.”

National Theatre reopens in June After Life and Under Milk Wood is announced

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The National Theatre is to reopen from June, with a play starring Michael Sheen in the first season.

The South Bank theatre will open its doors on June 2 for the first time this year with After Life, written by Jack Thorne and directed by Jeremy Herrin in the Dorfman Theatre. The play, an adaptation of a Japanese film, asks viewers which one person they would choose to spend the rest of time with.

Michael Sheen leads a production of Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood two weeks later on June 16 in the Olivier Theatre. The play, which was originally produced as a radio drama in the 1950s,

is a look into the minds of the residents of a fictional Welsh village.

Tickets go on sale on April 30. The Olivier theatre will have room for about 500 people under social distancing rules - down from its usual capacity of 1,150.

The Dorfman will have space for 120, compared to 450 in the time before the Covid-19 pandemic.

For Under Milk Wood more 200 tickets will be available at £20. Nearly 60 tickets for After Life will be at £20. Tickets will be available to purchase as singles, pairs or in threes or fours..

“It’s been an incredibly difficult year for theatre, but I’m delighted to be able to confirm our reopening plans today and to be sharing the news of our first two productions that will reopen the National Theatre in June,” said National Theatre director Rufus Norris.

“Both shows will play to sociallydistanced audiences and we look forward with cautious optimism to welcoming back larger audiences across our theatres soon.

“Sharing our work online and on television over the last year has enabled us to reach millions of people and continue to keep culture alive, but the magic of live theatre is what we can now begin to look towards: to creating work with our freelance artists and colleagues, to supporting young people’s creativity, and to bringing joy to audiences and communities through imaginative and inspiring live performance.”

Like many organisations that have had to close in the pandemic, the National Theatre has lost much of its income over the past year. In July the theatre told 400 casual members of staff that they would lose their jobs, a move that was met with protests. The theatre was recently given a loan for an undisclosed sum as part of the government’s Culture Recovery Fund to help cover a “multi-million pound deficit this year and next”.

New Tapas Room comes to Peckham

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A popular tapas chain is to open up a fifth branch in Peckham next month.

The Tapas Room will open on the site of the old Crown Hotel pub at 119 Peckham High Street.

The restaurant, which has room for 50 people, is due to open on May 17, when people can go out to eat and drink indoors for the first time in months. The business is split over a ground floor and basement level.

The Tapas Room’s other branches are in Deptford, Brixton, Battersea and Tooting. Belcher said he had wanted to open up a new restaurant in Peckham for some time.

“We’ve been wanting to have another south-east London location for a while, as some of our other restaurants are more south-west” he told the News.

“We’ve driven past the shop several times and when we saw it come up we knew we had to go for it.”

Asked why he was opening a new restaurant in a tough time for the industry, Belcher said: “Money hasn’t been too hard to come by, with all the government recovery funds, and our other restaurants are doing great. We’re not going crazy but we never want to stand still as a business.”

The Tapas Room is hiring for front of house and kitchen jobs in Peckham and in other locations.

Booking for the Peckham restaurant will start around the start of May.

Cafe to open at Buddhist centre in Kennington

kit@southwarknews.co.uk An independent Peckham secondhand book shop has reopened after lockdown, selling “nice copies of good books for cheap prices”, its owner has said.

Peter Willis, who runs BOOKS at 20 Maxted Road in Peckham, said he sells most of the shop’s books for £1-£2. He often focuses on unusual works that have

had small print runs or are even selfpublished.

BOOKS has had an unusual history.

The business began life as a stall in Camberwell Sunday Market, before moving to an alleyway near Peckham Rye station. The new location on Maxted Road is exciting, he said.

“The alley wasn’t fully sustainable, you’re a bit exposed. I never thought when I started up I would be moving into a shop. When things have settled down

a bit more, we’re hopefully going to do readings and workshops in the evenings.”

BOOKS is open from Thursday to Sunday, as Willis has another job that takes up the rest of the week.

Willis first moved to the area to study illustration at the Camberwell art college.

The exhibition, which runs from the museum’s reopening on May 19 until July 11, is funded by Southwark Council, as well as Arts Council England, King’s College London and several other groups.

Milquetoast is a touring exhibition that will also go to Tŷ Pawb in Wrexham for three months from late July and Aberystwyth Arts Centre.

Southwark Park Galleries have been shut for the past year amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The gallery’s managers said they were given money to reopen as part of the government’s recent second round of culture recovery fund payments. The funding

will also go towards support for artists and training.

“Our Board, wonderful team and I are over the moon to have been supported at this extremely difficult time,” director Judith Carlton said.

“The funds will crucially support our small team to rebuild our resilience in such a way that would otherwise have been impossible.

The Jamyang Buddhist temple and Dharma Centre is working with the owner of Walworth cafe Louie Louie to launch the Yard Cafe in its courtyard garden on Renfrew Road.

Chris Greenwood, who runs Louie Louie on the Walworth Road, said: “We are really pleased to be spreading the goodness outside our four walls

at Louie Louie in Southwark up to Kennington!”

“The Yard Cafe is a natural progression from our last collaboration, the Tennis Cafe in Burgess Park; we look forward to serving up more great food and drink in an equally stunning location.”

Greenwood ran the Tennis Cafe in Burgess Park for a stint in 2020 and at the start of this year, before handing it back to the local community.

Jamyang has been in the Old Courthouse for the past 25 years. The building itself went up in 1869.

Woolwich Crown Court heard that the gun was recovered during a surveillance investigation in July 2019, when armed officers stopped and searched a blue Toyota Prius in Wood Vale.

Officers found a revolver inside the male passenger’s bag.

The man, Reece White, 22, from Lambeth, was arrested for possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Police then conducted a further surveillance operation to locate a Ford Focus. This vehicle contained three men who had been observed during the collection of the revolver from another group.

At 6:50pm, the vehicle was stopped and three men were detained on New Park Road, near Freeman House, SW2.

They were arrested for conspiracy to possess a firearm with intent to endanger life.

All of the men were subsequently charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and remanded in custody.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey man is among five people who have been sent to prison for a vicious attack on an off-duty police officer that has left him with long-term pain.

Christian Bangisa was part of a group that sneaked up on the officer in the early hours of November 17, 2019 outside a bar in Harrow.

Bangisa, 29, was jailed on Friday, April 9, for four years and one month after being pleading guilty to violent disorder and robbery at Harrow Crown Court on February 3.

Police described the attack as “brutal, violent and sustained”. The officer had to be treated in hospital for bruising to his ribs, back and shoulders. The officer said in a statement that he is constantly looking over his shoulder, continues to feel pain from where he was assaulted and lives in fear of suffering a similar attack.

The attack began as he left the bar in Rayners Lane. Someone grabbed him from behind, pulling him by the neck onto the pavement. Twelve others then joined in a “frantic” attack that appeared to be pre-meditated.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A “dystopian, worn and uncared for” park just off Borough High Street could get a new mural, cafe and events space after locals pitched ideas for redevelopment.

Little Dorrit Park and Peace Garden is getting money for improvement from developers Crest Nicholson, as part of the deal for the works on nearby Brandon House.

Bankside Open Spaces Trust (BOST), which is managing consultation on the park’s redevelopment, held meetings with local people in-person in July 2019, and virtually in October and November 2020. BOST also ran surveys to gauge opinion further.

At the in-person meeting, local children were encouraged to sketch out their ideas for how to improve the park. Some On Friday, 26-year-old Nathaniel Corbett, 27-year-old Michael Adebambo, and Siraatillah Ford, 22, all from Lambeth, were found guilty of possessing a firearm.

The same day, two further men were found guilty of transferring a firearm: 29-yearold Jordan Adams from Lewisham, and Nail Johnson, 28, from Orpington.

On October 5, 2020, Reece White had pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm.

The gun has since been test-fired by an expert and it has been found to be a firearm in working order and capable of firing live ammunition.

They will appear on Wednesday, May 5 at Woolwich Crown Court for sentencing.

A 24-year-old man, arrested on 4 July 2019, was found not guilty of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life on Friday, April 16, at Woolwich Crown Court.

Detective Constable Martin Reader, of Specialist Crime South, said: “These men were in possession of an incredibly dangerous weapon and would have certainly used this to endanger the lives of people in their communities.

“I would urge anyone with information about someone who may be carrying a weapon to contact police immediately or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

The assailants also stole a chain from around the victim’s neck, his warrant card, bank cards, Oyster card and driving licence.

A friend of the officer tried to help, but the thugs punched him in the face, breaking his nose and fracturing his jaw. Another passer-by also stepped in and was knocked unconscious by the attackers. A fourth man then tried to help and was also attacked, but managed to escape without getting injured.

The officer ran to a nearby police station and reported the incident.

Police identified Bangisa and four other attackers through CCTV footage. Officers were also able to place their cars at the scene and used mobile phone data to show they were there.

Bangisa and fellow assailants Rodney Abrokwa, of Enfield, Daniel Agyeman, from Croydon, and Irawoosan Alba, from Dagenham, were arrested more than three months later on February 26, 2020. The fifth man, Shariff Fussaini, was arrested in Westcliff-on-Sea in Essex the next day.

Bangisa pleaded guilty to violent disorder and robbery. All five were found guilty of both charges.

Abrokwa was jailed for four years and six months, Agyeman and Fussaini were sentenced to five years in prison and Alba

was given six years.

Detective Inspector Gavin Collins, who led the investigation, said: “The CCTV shows these men committing a chaotic, brutal and sustained attack on the victim and others who were present on the night. It is clear that these individuals wanted nothing more than to steal valuable possessions from the victim.

The attackers acted purely on their desire to steal a valuable watch, and yet the incident resulted in many individuals being physically harmed, and many more onlookers having to witness a truly disturbing incident.

“The Met takes violence against victims and its officers extremely seriously. The group became aware that the victim was a police officer when they found his warrant card. They subsequently continued to rain blows down on the victim and committed further violence against others in the area, demonstrating their arrogance and total disregard for the fact that they were assaulting an emergency worker.

“I hope that knowing this group of men will be spending a significant time in prison provides some reassurance to the victims, and those who witnessed this awful incident. The Met and the judicial system will not tolerate violence in any form, not least when it is committed against a person who regularly and knowingly puts themselves in harm’s way for others.”

At the later meetings, adults complained of anti-social behaviour like people drinking, dealing drugs, and “using the bushes as a toilet”. Others said the nearby narrow alleyway was intimidating, especially at night. Some people also said the shape of the park also makes it difficult to watch over children when they are playing in a different section.

“The park and garden feel dystopian, worn and uncared for,” a local woman said. “It also feels unsafe to visit alone, as a single woman.”

Locals were more positive about the flowers, trees, play areas and seating, although some said adding more benches could encourage people to sit and drink on them. Others also said that the separate dog-walking area in the Peace Garden was welcome.

“More and more I see dog restrictions in

place across Southwark,” one respondent said, “contrary to what a large part of the population actually needs… safe, wellenclosed dog-walking areas.”

Other improvements suggested included improving the play area, putting in better lighting, improving the route to Borough High Street and resurfacing the tarmac.

The first stage of the consultation finished earlier this year. The next stage is to create a concept design. Graduates at architecture firm Ramboll have produced creative designs, suggesting features including an educational mural, cafe and event space.

The amount of money Crest Nicholson will give as part of its Section 106 agreement remains unclear at this stage.

Created by locals and organised by Camberwell Arts, the new design has brought a bit of colour to the route near the Morrison’s end of Butterfly Walk arcade.

Another ‘yarn storming’ event is now planned for June 19-27 on Camberwell Green, to coincide with Camberwell Arts Festival, with anyone who can knit or crochet invited to take part.

Ali Kirby, a volunteer with Camberwell Arts, said “We worked with expert crocheter, Crochet

by Harriet, to help us pull the project together and it has been so well received.

“We wanted to bring some colour to Wren Road, working with the landlord Spot Property (MJW) who gave permission to allow the two trees to be ‘dressed’.

Debbie Allen, the coordinator for the yarn storming project, said: “As we emerge from the latest lockdown, we want to create another opportunity for anyone who can knit or crochet to be part of a work of art like this.

“The theme for this year’s Camberwell Arts Festival is Inside Out with the aim to showcase Camberwell's incredible open spaces, which have provided a lifeline for so many during the pandemic.

“This includes Camberwell Green, our next site for colourful yarn storming.”

Harman’s calls to reduce black maternal deaths Before the debate a petition gained nearly 190,000 signatures

In a landmark debate held in parliament on Monday, April 19, Labour called for the government to commit to tackle the shocking disparity.

Harman, the Camberwell and Peckham MP, has long advocated for change, highlighting shocking figures that show that black women are more than four times more likely to die during pregnancy, labour or soon after childbirth in the UK. She said it was ‘no good just wringing hands’ about the issue and that the government needed to set milestones for how it could meet a target of

closing the gap.

She has called on the government to publish clear and consistent data both nationally and regionally, set a clear target with annual milestones, and to cut health and income equalities.

Previously, through the human rights committee she jointly chairs, Harman has highlighted how 78 per cent of black women believe the care they have been given by the NHS was not equal.

The debate was brought forward after a petition gained nearly 190,000 signatures. In the House of Commons, Harman told MPs her constituency accounted for the second highest number of supporters.

“It is particularly tragic when a new mother dies,” Harman said in her speech.

“She will die early in life, leaving behind a newborn or other children. Everyone in maternity services wants maternity care to be a properly resourced and highly professional team.

“A black woman is four or five times more likely than a white woman to die during childbirth or shortly thereafter, and nobody wants that to be the case. It is a dreadful situation and it must be addressed.”

protesters demand action on empty Southwark homes

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Dozens of people gathered outside the Manor Place Depot development in Walworth last Saturday to protest about homes standing empty in Southwark and across London.

The gathering was part of a wider protest by the Action on Empty Homes group, which calculates that there are 268,000 homes in England that have been empty for more than six months, 260,000 second homes with no permanent resident and 120,000 shortterm lets through platforms like Airbnbwith 70,000 of those in London alone.

And Action on Empty Homes says Southwark is London’s “hotspot” for unoccupied housing. Some 2,358 homes stood empty in 2020, according to the group. Many of these are in the north-east of the borough.

Southwark Council has said there are more than 1,300 “long-term empty” private properties, based on its own council tax records. There are more than 14,000 households on the council housing waiting list in the borough and 3,000 in temporary accommodation.

“It’s got to the stage where you can’t just ignore it anymore,” said Will, a protester in Walworth on Saturday. “It’s crazy that there are all these houses just standing empty with the level of homelessness that we’ve got in London.”

The masked group gathered together for a photoshoot. Some chanted “requisition, not demolition” outside the block as several residents looked on from their balconies.

One woman living in the building told the News: “I basically support what they’re doing, we all want to end homelessness and things like that. But I think they’ve got the wrong target coming here. [My husband and I] are key workers and we do actually live here.”

Manor Place Depot was chosen as the site for the photoshoot because it is “a symbol of much that is wrong with regeneration”, according to organisers.

The development’s flats start at more than £550,000 for a one-bed property, according to the website of developers Notting Hill Genesis. Just 44 of the 262 flats are for social rent. A spokesperson for Notting Hill Genesis said: “We have a total of 23 properties at Manor Place Depot that are as yet unsold. Of these, seven have been reserved and 16 are still on the market. We have already sold all 82 shared ownership homes and let out

all 44 social rent homes.

Southwark Council’s plan to tackle empty homes in the borough includes buying up empty properties and using them as council housing, as well as working with landlords to use empty homes as temporary accommodation.

But the council said its hands are currently tied by national planning policy.

Cllr Helen Dennis, Southwark’s

cabinet member for social support and homelessness, urged government housing minister Robert Jenrick ahead of the Action on Empty Homes protest to change national planning policy to let the council do more about the “unacceptable” situation.

Dennis asked Jenrick in a letter to “provide local authorities with the power within planning policy to insist on full

occupancy as a condition of planning permission”, with any vacant properties to be let out at “affordable” rent.

Other demands included allowing councils to raise the tax on long-term empty homes, to make it easier for local authorities to use compulsory purchase orders to bring empty homes back into use, and to consider loans and grants to cut the number of empty homes.

The founder of a Rotherhithebased group that has helped give out protective equipment in the Covid-19 pandemic has been given a prestigious Southwark award.

Gracie gets a cut to help other children

A little girl has had her hair cut short to donate to a charity that supports children with cancer and to raise money.

The News reported last month that ten-year-old Gracie Nathan, who lives in Southwark, was planning to donate her hair to the Little Princess Trust to make wigs. Gracie was also running a fundraiser for the charity to meet the £550 cost of a wig.

She has now had the haircut for free from Mary Dolls salon in Peckham and has raised £630 - far higher than her target.

Gracie’s mother Katie said:

“Gracie’s really happy because of what she’s achieved and the help she’s giving people, but also because it’s a really nice haircut!”

Katie added that Gracie has been teased by some children at school but said that “she doesn’t mind, because she knows it’s for a good cause.”

Dr Theo Gavrielides, founder of Restorative Justice for All International Institute, based on Surrey Quays Road, was awarded the Liberty of the Old Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey at the Southwark Civil Awards this week.

Gavrielides was given the award by Southwark Mayor Cllr Barrie Hargrove in a socially distanced ceremony at the Rotherhithe Community Centre on Wednesday, April 21.

Restorative Justice For All (RJ4ALL) was one of the groups that stepped in to help hand out food and personal protective equipment at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. The group also ran a mental health support initiative called You Are Not Alone.

Nick Johnson, RJ4All Board member and local councillor said: “I am delighted that Theo has been recognised in the Southwark Civic Awards for 2020. It is a recognition that he and the whole team at RJ4ALL richly deserve for their commitment to building community cohesion in our Borough. In times of crisis, we all need people who are willing to roll their sleeves up and make a difference - Theo is exactly this sort of person!”

Get arty with the help of Dulwich Picture Gallery

Kids can learn how to make art at home for free in Sunday sessions run by Dulwich Picture Gallery.

The gallery is putting on four sessions at the end of each month aimed at 7-12-year-olds and their families, although children of all ages are welcome. The first two were in February and March and the next is happening this Sunday, April 25, at 2pm.

The sessions are led by local artist and teacher Francesca CentioniDene. The upcoming event will focus on plants, following a recent

photography exhibition put on

King’s College Hospital make a breakthrough in schizophrenia treatment Researchers at King’s College Hospital may have made an important breakthrough in the treatment of schizophrenia patients.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness that affects about one per cent of people at some point. A third of those do not get better with treatment.

King’s doctors think that a brain mechanism called cognitive flexibility that allows people to switch between thinking about two different ideas could be key to treating these people.

King’s researchers carried out a study to test the idea. Twenty one people with schizophrenia who were responding to treatment, twenty who were non-responsive and 34 in a control group were asked to carry out cognitive flexibility tasks. At the same time the researchers were scanning their brains to see how they responded.

The patients that were not getting better with treatment did not have the cognitive flexibility mechanism.

This finding could enable doctors to target their illness with more personalised treatment and may help them get better.

Dr Charlotte Horne, lead author and postdoctoral research associate at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London said: “For the first time, we show a fundamental problem in cognitive flexibility in patients with schizophrenia that fail to respond to treatment.

“While this is a small study, the findings are important as they present a clear target for long-term treatment in these patients. Our research also helps us move towards treatment strategies that work for each person, meaning that in future, each patient with schizophrenia has the best chance of recovery.”

Poetry lovers can join local group on Zoom Southwark Council is running a poetry reading group for local residents.

The Poetry and Wellbeing group, which has been going since 2018, is currently running on Zoom from 5-6pm on Tuesday evenings. The group has been online since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sessions include games, reading of established poets and writing

prompts to help inspire people to create their own poems. Attendees can also share their own work with the group.

The council describes the group as “relaxed” and says it is “made up of all levels to share an interest in poetry”.

Fruit and milk are being given out across Southwark Three Southwark community organisations have had donations of fruit, milk and other groceries from a longstanding London food delivery business.

Rye Hill Tenants’ and Residents’ Association (TRA) in Peckham, Central Southwark Community Hub and Kingswood TRA in Dulwich have been given 200 pieces of fruit and 400 litres of fresh milk each week by Jones Bros, who have been delivering food in London since the 19th century.

The effort was coordinated by the Camberwell-based group Southwark Pensioners’___ Centre, which looks after the needs of people over 50 in the borough.

A spokesperson for Rye Hill TRA

said: “Our thanks to Jones Bros for donating 100 pints of fresh milk and delicious fruit to our Foodbank users today, organised by the brilliant Southwark Pensioners’ Centre, accompanied by their Chair Cllr Charlie Smith.”

Kingswood TRA and Central Southwark Community Hub also thanked Jones Bros for their work.

The East End-based food delivery business was supported in the earlier stages of the Covid-19 pandemic by several of its regular customers in the finance and insurance industries.

Pacific Life RE, First Sentier Investors, Endava and Atrium Underwriters continued to pay for food deliveries despite staff working from home as part of the lockdown.

hospital appoints funmi as new diversity chief

King’s College Hospital has hired a new diversity chief its first permanent job of this kind.

Funmi Onamusi will be director of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Onamusi will be responsible for “accelerating the Trust’s ambitious EDI agenda” - although the hospital did not say what this entails. She will also be tasked with “inspiring and delivering sustainable cultural change”.

She joins from Big Four consultancy firm EY, where she worked with organisations on improving diversity and inclusion.

Clients included a national healthcare organisation and a police service.

Onamusi has eighteen years’ experience of this kind of work.

She replaces Claudette Elliott, who took the job on an interim basis last year.

‘Crosslon was easy to love’ - doting mum

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The two men who murdered a young drill rapper in Deptford have been handed life sentences.

Jedaiah Param, from West Norwood, and Elijah Morgan, of no fixed address, were found guilty last month of the murder of Crosslon Davis in an alleyway in Deptford in 2019.

The pair were sentenced to a minimum of 28 years in jail on Monday, April 19.

Police think two other attackers are still at large and have urged anyone who has information on them to come forward.

Crosslon, 20, was said to be a “highly regarded” drill artist who was a member of the Harlem Spartans, a well-known music

collective primarily based in Kennington.

His mother called him "easy to love", "compassionate and loyal" and said the attackers had "ripped out her heart".

The twenty-year-old, known as Bis, suffered at least nine wounds to his head, back and chest when he was set upon by four youths armed with knives or machetes.

Most of the attack in early hours of December 6 2019 was caught on CCTV footage.

Analysis of mobile phone records showed that Crosslon arrived at Deptford Creek with a friend in the early hours of 6 December 2019.

Cell site data of mobile phones belonging to Morgan and Param showed they had arrived in the same area slightly earlier.

The pair were identified by homicide detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command through CCTV from a minicab that was called to pick them up at the scene.

Highest number of children ever given preferred primary school places

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A record-breaking number of families have been offered a preferred primary school place this year, says Southwark Council.

According to the local authority, the number of families who submitted on-time primary applications to receive places in their schools of choice is the highest since records began in 2009.

In total, 2,798 applications were received by the deadline for September 2021’s intake. Every applicant has been offered a place, with 98.8 per cent offered a place at one of their preferred schools.

The council received a total of 2,798 on-time primary applications for the September 2021 intake and has yet again been able to offer a primary school place to every applicant received on time.

Councillor Jasmine Ali, deputy leader and cabinet member for children, young people and education said: “This is very welcome good

news after such a tough year for schools, parents and children.

The court heard the violent attack started after Morgan and Param got into the minicab and Crosslon attacked Morgan with a mallet.

The minicab drove away from the scene a short distance before the driver was told to stop and Morgan and Param got out and started chasing Crosslon.

CCTV footage from Ha’penny Hatch showed that Crosslon was pursued by the pair, as well as two other unidentified males, who were all armed with knives or machetes.

The court heard that all four of them stabbed Crosslon, who collapsed to the ground. Crosslon’s friend had tried to place himself between him and the attackers, but he was overpowered.

Police said a number of local residents provided statements describing how they had seen the group running after Crosslon.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene. Despite their efforts, Crosslon died

a short time later due to the loss of blood from at least nine stab wounds, including one that penetrated his lung and heart.

Crosslon’s friend called 999 and initially stayed with him until the emergency services arrived. However, officers say he gave a false name at the scene and declined to give a witness statement, or help with the police investigation in any way.

Morgan was identified after a police officer recognised him from the minicab CCTV footage. He was arrested at an address in Birmingham on 2 January.

Param, who was also identified via the minicab CCTV, was arrested at Dover Eastern Docks after he was found hiding underneath a coat in the back of a car as it went through passport control.

Both men declined to comment in police interviews and subsequently pleaded not guilty to murder. Morgan’s defence during the trial was that he was wrongly identified.

Vandenbergh, the lead investigator, said: “This was a savage and merciless attack.

Crosslon was clearly running away from his attackers, who set upon him armed with large knives.

“The number of stab wounds sustained

by Crosslon demonstrates the murderous intent of the four people who hunted him down.

“I think it is right that Elijah Morgan and Jedaiah Param have received lengthy jail sentences for their part in the attack. I am also pleased that we have some justice for Crosslon’s family, who have conducted themselves with the greatest of dignity throughout the court process.

"We know there are still two other people who took part in this attack, who have not yet been identified, and we are still determined to find them. I urge anyone who knows where they are to contact police immediately.”

Crosslon’s mother Vivienne said: “My life was all about Crosslon. He was the reason for leaving my house, the reason I cook every day, he is the first thing on my mind when I wake and the last thing on my mind at night. We had lots of laughs through good and bad and he was also my friend.

“We still can’t believe this is happening.

Crosslon's life was tragically cut short, and I am still numb and paralysed, plagued by grief and pain. They have ripped out my heart. We are haunted by what happened to Cross.

“Crosslon was easy to love, so polite and always respectful. He was popular amongst his friends, fun, compassionate and loyal.

He will be greatly missed by them all as they also continue to grieve their loss.”

Man convicted for rampage in Camberwell McDonald’s

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A man who ripped two McDonald’s tills out and assaulted the store manager after he was refused service has been convicted after a trial at Croydon Crown Court.

On November 1, 2019, at around 3.30pm staff inside Camberwell’s McDonald’s refused to service 50-yearold David King, from Lambeth, after they said they had seen him drinking alcohol inside the restaurant.

Although the manager agreed to take the order as long as King took his food outside, King became irate and poured his drink all over the floor before shouting,

throwing popcorn across the counter and ripping two electronic till screens off their fixtures, all captured on CCTV. He caused around £1,000 of damage before being arrested and forced the shop to close during one of its busiest periods.

King also assaulted the terrified store manager before officers arrived, pushing him in the chest as he blocked King from getting behind the counter. In evidence given during the trial, the manager said he had been particularly afraid as he was pushed toward deep fat fryers with oil at 178 degrees.

Last Thursday, April 15, King was convicted of criminal damage and common assault by beating following a trial at Croydon Magistrates’ Court. He

will be sentenced at the same court on May 10.

Carol Udenze, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “King was drinking alcohol, his behaviour was unacceptable and disrupted the McDonald’s restaurant's many visitors and staff.

“During the trial, the prosecution was able to present CCTV evidence of the criminal damage and assault of the manager alongside his strong witness testimony.

“We hope this prosecution deters destructive behaviour on our high streets in the knowledge that the CPS will prosecute individuals where there is appropriate evidence.”

Has Lib Dem opposition leader stepped down?

Emergency services were at the scene from approximately 4.15pm on April 19 after reports of an attack.

He was taken to an east London hospital where his condition was described as ‘non life-threatening’.

Footage shared on social media shows officers putting up a cordon around Spinach restaurant, with the attack believed to have taken place inside or nearby.

So far no arrests have been made.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 4.14pm on April 19 to reports of a person injured in Lordship Lane, SE22.

"We sent an ambulance crew, a medic in a car, and a clinical team manager.

We also dispatched London's Air

Ambulance.

"A man was treated at the scene and taken to a major trauma centre as a priority."

Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes said she was “very concerned to hear about a stabbing on Lordship Lane.

“My thoughts with the victim receiving treatment in hospital and all who witnessed this appalling, traumatic violence.”

Dulwich Hamlet director Tom Cullen said a friend of his witnessed the attack while eating at the restaurant.

He Tweeted: “Stabbing at/outside Spinach. Apparently a moped with two lads ran another off the road, took refuge at spinach and was stabbed.”

Cllr Nick Johnson has been hired as the new chief executive officer for a social research company based in Islington called Traverse.

In a press release sent out on Monday morning, the company described Johnson as 'until recently' the leader of Southwark's official opposition.

In response to questions seeking further clarification, a Traverse spokesperson told this newspaper that Johnson was stepping down from the top job this week but will remain a Surrey Docks ward councillor.

Rotherhithe bus collision Police boats sent out after reports of ‘two falling in river’

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Police rescued a woman who fell into the Thames on Tuesday morning, April 20, according to the London Fire Brigade.

Officers were also trying to find another person who fell into the Thames from the bridge at the same time.

A helicopter joined City of London police, river police, firefighters and lifeboat crews at the scene on

Tuesday morning. The people are thought to have fallen into the river at around 8am.

It remains unclear who the people are, how old they are and why they fell in.

A spokesperson for the City of London Police said on Tuesday: “Officers from City of London Police are working with marine units and the police helicopter to find a person who was seen falling into the river from Tower Bridge this morning.

"Work is ongoing to identify the person.”

A passenger was taken to hospital after a bus collided with a van in Rotherhithe on Tuesday afternoon, April 20, writes Kit Heren...

The collision took place at about 12.15pm on Capstan Way. Roads in the area, including Salter Road, were blocked off while emergency services dealt with the situation.

Ambulance crews and police came to the scene and several bus passengers were treated by paramedics.

A spokesperson for the Met Police said: “Officers attended. Several bus passengers were treated at the scene; one has been taken to a south London hospital with a minor injury.

“Local roads were closed whilst emergency services were at the scene.”

Government needs to step in on empty homes

P

rotesters chanting outside a gleaming new development where several homes appeared to lie empty illustrated the difficulty of the housing crisis in Southwark and across London.

It’s natural for protesters to want to vent their anger at the council and at developers for their role in the crisis. Action on Empty Homes says that 2,358 homes were empty in 2020. Southwark Council said there are more than 1,300 “long-term empty” private properties.

At the same time, there are more than 14,000 households on the council housing waiting list in the borough and 3,000 in temporary accommodation.

This shows that even if all the empty homes were requisitioned tomorrow, it would only scratch the surface of the problem. The roots go far deeper than what is happening today.

The Right to Buy policy introduced under Margaret Thatcher gave people the opportunity to buy their home from their local authority at a major discount. While a massive boost to the people who benefited from it, the scheme also amounted to a grand transfer of public wealth to private hands. But the hope of local working class people being able to buy a home in the area has long been beyond even high earners, as property prices continue to rise.

At the same time, the council has promised to build 11,000 new council homes by 2043. But we are now seeing the problem with that pledge - where to put them? Tenants understandably don’t want to feel overcrowded or to lose sunlight as a result of infill schemes.

The only solution is national, as the council said in its letter to housing minister Robert Jenrick: give local authorities the power to insist on full occupancy as a condition of planning permission, with any vacant properties to be let out at affordable rent.

Dual in the crown

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk ONE OF Millwall Lionesses’ brightest talents since the restart of organised sport, Amy Nash, says it’s a “pleasure” to be playing for the club – as she fits in training and games with her university work.

The midfielder, who is also dual signed with AFC Bournemouth Women and studies Sports Therapy at Bournemouth University, scored in the friendly win against Hackney Lionesses recently and as the Rotherhithe-based side returned to action after the third lockdown.

Katie Whitmore’s side also defeated Upton Park Ladies before losing 2-0 to Kent Football United, who play two leagues above them.

Nash is happy to be back playing again after the challenge of a long lay-off and the uncertainty over when sport would resume.

“These games have been a pleasure to play in with the team. It’s the first time I’ve been with this squad for consecutive weeks since being at university most of this season, and I’m enjoying it so much,” she said.

“Obviously it’s tough to be back after months without games. However, the individual sessions and fitness plans have helped with our upkeep dramatically. The games themselves against Hackney Lionesses, Upton Park Ladies and Kent Football United were a good test for the team, especially the Kent game, as we were able to try new things and test ourselves.

Nash, who opened the scoring in the victory over Hackney Lionesses, and has received praise from management and staff for her calm and composed demeanour in games, is enjoying testing herself with Katie Whitmore’s side.

“It feels great to be on the scoresheet,” she said. “Millwall have played me in new positions, with more opportunities, and that I am very grateful for. I feel that a majority of these games have gone well, both personally and as a team.

Amy Nash at some points. However, you can only improve from pushing yourself to limits in new positions.

Nash praised the coaches and backroom staff for getting the squad up to speed after so long without training or match action.

“Since coming back, the staff have been brilliant,” Nash said. “With our coaches providing one-to-one sessions

and [fitness coach] Andy Ferguson providing a fitness plan that was challenging, but engaging.”

Nash outlined the challenges and benefits of being dual signed by two teams. “The constant switching from team to team is difficult, but I feel it improves me as a player.

“As I play different positions at each team, it allows me to gain more

experience, making me a more flexible player.

“Being a Millwall fan myself, playing for Millwall means a lot to me, making my family and friends at Millwall proud.”

At this point of the government’s ‘roadmap’ out of lockdown, games are still behind closed doors.

But Nash is thankful for all the support

that the team have been receiving on social media, and is looking forward to having fans back at home games when the guidelines allow.

She said: “I want to thank the fans so much for their support, it helps a lot more than people realise.

“I hope that they keep supporting us, and hopefully we can have some supporters back at St Paul’s soon.”

“It’s still a good wicket so that was a big ask but we broke it down and Jamie batted really well today. He is class and bringing up his hundred with a six shows he has real flair about him. I’ve never done that.”

Controversy at the Oval as Surrey unhappy in draw sport@southwarknews.co.uk OLLIE POPE’S superb third-day 245 to spearhead Surrey’s drive to a 297run first innings lead wasn’t enough as Leicestershire earned a hardfought draw at the Kia Oval last weekend.

Hassan Azad led the way with a careerbest 144 not out as Leicestershire held firm to finish on 295 for 3 when fists were bumped at 5.10pm with 21 overs unbowled.

It was a final day not without incident.

Surrey captain Rory Burns was unhappy when umpires Graham Lloyd and Paul Pollard chose to change the ball in the 35th over, with Leicestershire on 89 for 2 and soon after they had lost Sam Evans and Harry Dearden to successive balls from Jordan Clark.

The match was held up for five minutes or so as Burns, and other Surrey players, remonstrated with the officials. No penalty runs were added to the total, and the ball may have been damaged on the boundary boards.

By Jake Sanders in Brentford sport@southwarknews.co.uk THERE’S NOT going to be a promotion party at The Den this summer, but Norwich were able to pop the champagne corks as their return to the Premier League was confirmed after Millwall’s draw against Brentford last Saturday.

Bizarrely, despite Millwall drawing more times than anyone else in the Championship this season, this was their first since salvaging a last-gasp point at Luton back in February, as they ended a run of nine games without one.

The Lions won five and lost four of those games before their trip to west London, but while this point was an excellent one, it officially ended their faint top-six hopes.

A share of the spoils might have come as a slight surprise, but the fact that it came against one of the top sides in the division shouldn’t.

This stalemate continued an ongoing theme this season for Gary Rowett’s side, who have regularly taken points off teams fighting for automatic promotion, though it’s only making up for their inconsistent results against those they’re expected to beat.

Millwall lost twice to Swansea, including a reverse earlier this month, but the Lions have a pair of goalless draws with Norwich, two draws against Brentford, and they picked up points against Watford and Bournemouth.

In complete contrast, Millwall’s unsuccessful play-off bid was mainly down to their failure to beat those below them in the table – with seven of their eleven Championship defeats this season against sides that are in the bottom half.

On this occasion, the Lions never really looked like losing.

Only four sides had previously left the Brentford Community Stadium with a clean sheet in the league, but none of them performed as impressively as Rowett’s side.

Brentford were blunt in attack, but it was more down to a disciplined display from Millwall’s back-line, as captain Alex Pearce epitomised their performance with a classy late interception, proving he’s more than capable of doing it at this level.

It was Millwall’s seventeenth clean sheet of the campaign, one more than the tally which earned Bartosz Bialkowski the shared Golden Glove – with Brentford’s David Raya – twelve months ago.

Bialkowski is one behind Norwich’s Tim Krul and three behind Freddie Woodman of Swansea this season.

The Lions stopper has been worked far harder than he was against the Championship’s most lethal attack.

Brentford had been averaging almost two goals per game at home, but they didn’t perform like an outfit that had put five past Preston five days earlier and seven past Wycombe back in January.

To put that into context, ahead of their trip across the capital, Millwall had only scored five more goals in their entire season than

the Bees had managed at their new ground. in their first game at this stadium, the south Londoners were a late Ivan Toney chance – which only came from a misplaced header from Murray Wallace – away from going the whole 90 minutes without conceding a shot on target.

Fortunately for the Scot, Millwall have one of the finest goalkeepers in the Championship at their disposal, and like so often previously, Bialkowski came to their rescue with the latest in a long line of outstanding stops – this time leaping off his line to smother Toney’s close-range effort.

Bialkowski had done little more than enjoy the London sunshine for most of the afternoon, but his contribution in this one instance was worthy of a clean sheet in itself.

The Pole took a boot to the face for his troubles, but if Millwall’s goalkeeper was feeling the pain from that incident, he would have been left hurting in another sense moments later when the visitors should have struck a late winner deep into stoppage-time.

With Brentford piling numbers forward in a desperate attempt to get those extra two points to boost their fading top-two hopes, Millwall broke away, with Maikel Kieftenbeld and substitute Billy Mitchell fashioning a chance for Danny McNamara to cap yet another brilliant display with an assist.

But with Jon Dadi Bodvarsson – who hasn’t scored since December – waiting unmarked in the middle, the wing-back’s

cross rolled agonisingly across the face of goal.

Had Bodvarsson reached the ball, it would have been a classic case of smash-and-grab.

Millwall had earlier created the best two chances of the game, only for the usually reliable Scott Malone to fail to find the target.

Malone completely let Brentford off the hook inside the opening five minutes when he couldn’t test Raya despite being totally unmarked from McNamara’s perfect cross.

Raya then denied him the second time.

It wasn’t meant to be for Millwall. But Rowett not only has the club pushing towards another top-half finish, the Lions chief is also only a few additions away from having a side that can be regular play-off contenders.

With Kenneth Zohore set to return to West Brom and Matt Smith out of contract this summer, bringing in at least one striker would be a good place to start.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk SOME PLAYERS can tend to put their feet up when there’s little left to play for in their season – but don’t suggest to Alex Pearce there’s any possibility of that happening at Millwall.

You’ll quickly be set straight.

The Lions have, for the last few weeks, realistically only been playing for a place in the top half of the table.

Yet they defeated Middlesbrough, Rotherham and Stoke for three consecutive wins and went to the new home of the top scorers, Brentford, last weekend and their draw meant Norwich were promoted.

Millwall could have even won that game and there was no sense whatsoever they were about to take their foot off the gas.

Pearce insists “there is always something to play for” and “personal pride takes over” as soon as Lions players set foot in the dressing room.

Millwall have three games left, against Watford, Bristol City and Coventry, and are aiming to secure consecutive topten finishes at this level for the first time since 2005.

Pearce had a sharp response when asked about motivation when there is little tangible left to play for.

“I disagree with that,” he said. “I think there’s always something on the line.

Every time you step out onto the pitch there is something on the line.

“Your reputation, your pride, your personal pride. No one wants to go out there and get beaten, whether there’s nothing to play for or whether you’re chasing promotion.

“There’s always something to play for and as soon as you get into that dressing room and start getting ready for the game, your personal pride takes over.

“You want to win the game, you want to win as many games as possible. And that will certainly be the case for this group going into the last [three] games.

“The motivation will still be high, as you saw against Brentford. The motivation to do well in that game was high and I thought we actually could have won the game.

“We had some good chances and we were unlucky not to take them.

“I think overall we can be very pleased with our season, again. This season and last season since the gaffer came in we’ve performed consistently.

“To get hopefully two top-ten finishes after finishing eighth last year, that’s a good achievement for us.

“As players we can be pleased with how we’ve performed. Of course we want more, of course we want to be better. We constantly strive for that within the group and we push each other every day in training, push the

“We want to try to break into that top six, of course, but as a club we can be pleased with another good season.”

Pearce believes Millwall’s performance over the course of the campaign is even more impressive given their injury problems.

Gary Rowett will not have had a full squad to choose from in any of the 46 league games this season. Eleven players have missed a month or more and earlier this week there were eight first-team players unable to take part in full training.

“You know what, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an injury crisis like it at a club,” Pearce said. “I know the amount of games has played a part, the sheer volume of the load, and people have had injuries.

“We’ve certainly had our fair share of it, to say the least, I think we’ve

been really unlucky with injuries.

We’ve missed key players at key times.

“But as a group we’ve all pulled together and it shows the strength of the squad that when we have had key players out others have stepped in and done well, done decent jobs for the team.

“That’s been the really pleasing thing. Players have stepped up to the mark and we haven’t suffered too much, which has been a really positive thing.”

Before they played Bournemouth on Wednesday, Millwall had kept seventeen clean sheets in the Championship this season. Only the top three had conceded fewer than them, and they are likely to finish with the best defence outside the top six.

Last season, they had the sixth-best defence in the Championship, and that consistency is another source of pride for Millwall’s captain.

“That’s been the real basis of our success over the last couple of years since the gaffer’s come in, he’s really got us set up very solidly as a team,” Pearce said.

“It’s not just the back four or five, it really is a real team effort. The attackers in the team do as much defending as the defenders, they really do. We really couldn’t keep as many clean sheets as we have without everyone pulling in that same direction.

“That has been a real strength of ours, we’re very solid and hard to beat and we keep a lot of clean sheets.”

While Pearce is satisfied with Millwall’s defensive stability, he recognises they need to score more to force their way into a play-off fight.

But he doesn’t only put that pressure on the forward players.

“Obviously going the other way we’ve got things to work on, we’d like to add more goals to the team,”

Pearce said. “Again, that’s not just the attackers. The defenders need to chip in with more goals, everyone included going both ways.”

“We have found it difficult at times against teams lower down the league.

Maybe that’s partly because of how we play. We defend quite deep at times and we’re happy for the opposition to have the ball.

“That suits us against the top teams, we’re not expected to have the ball as much. We’re expected to defend quite deep and hit them on the transition. So when we play the top teams that kind of game plan works.

“When it’s the other way round, when we play the bottom sides, when we have the ball, that’s when we need to be better in breaking teams down.

Having more possession of the ball and being better with it.

“That’s where we need to progress.

If we want to be a real top side that’s where we’ll be looking to improve.”

New contract for midfielder

Midfielder Mitchell – who turned 20 this month – signed a previous

deal in March 2020 and the club have improved his terms again.

The boyhood Lion joined the club on schoolboy forms and played initially for the under-15s.

Mitchell made his senior debut on the final day of the 2018-19 season when he came on as a substitute

against Wigan and signed his first professional contract that summer.

He made his full debut against Oxford in the EFL Cup in August 2019 and then his full league debut in a 1-0 win at Hull in July 2020.

He has made 24 appearances for the Lions, 13 this season.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk NOW THAT Millwall only have final league places to jostle for over the remaining three games of the season, it’s tempting to look ahead towards 2021-22 and what the make-up of the squad might be.

Lions boss Gary Rowett is balancing finding out what he needs over the summer with respecting the Championship’s “integrity”, which he emphasised after last Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Brentford.

The top-six contenders never had to worry about Millwall’s approach in games against promotion rivals, despite little on the line for the Lions as regards tangible success in the remaining part of the season.

Norwich have already benefited from Millwall’s ultra-professional attitude, after the Canaries were promoted when the Lions denied a Bees side that desperately needed three points to keep their realistic top-two hopes alive.

Rowett is certainly unlikely to experiment this weekend against Watford, as automatic promotion still isn’t settled.

But with Bristol City safe and Coventry likely to have confirmed their survival

before the final day, those are two games when Rowett can choose to take those “gambles” he has said he would.

Looking ahead towards next season and the opening day on the second weekend of August, we can probably hazard a fair guess at the definite starters, presuming Millwall fend off any interest from other clubs in the likes of Jed Wallace, who is sure to be in demand this summer.

They are: Bart Bialkowski, George Evans, Shaun Hutchinson, Jake Cooper, Wallace and Mason Bennett.

You could probably add one of Danny McNamara or Mahlon Romeo to that.

MILLWALL’S LATEST loan star, defender Alex Mitchell, earned high praise from Bromley boss Andy Woodman after his debut in senior professional football last weekend.

Mitchell played in the centre of defence and made a crucial block to deny Laurence Maguire as Bromley won 2-1 at Chesterfield to move to level on points with the Spireites who occupy the final play-off place in the National League table.

“He was great,” Woodman told Bromley TV. “He’s a young boy that’s come from under23s football and has probably never experienced anything like what he did today.

“I’m very, very lucky to have a connection with Millwall and [head of academy] Scott Fitzgerald.

“When you get people like that tell you what he’s going to do and he does it, it just cements the relationships and friendships you have in the game that tell you honestly about players.

“He didn’t disappoint anywhere along the line. He’s a real credit to himself, us, Scott and the academy at Millwall.”

Meanwhile, also in National League, Isaac Olaofe was handed a new position on the left wing as Sutton travelled to Altrincham on Saturday – and it paid off as the attacker set up the second goal in a 4-0 win.

Sutton responded to a recent wobble in their promotion challenge as they emphatically won for the first time in five games.

Millwall also wanted a central defender in the last transfer window and it was an open secret that Hibernian centre-back Ryan Porteous was on their list.

Rowett would ideally like a central midfielder to offer more of a goal threat.

Those are the three key positions to be strengthened, as well as the left side if Malone moves elsewhere.

Millwall have shown with their results against the top sides they are not far away from being genuine top-six contenders, no matter where they finish this season.

The key is to find the creative players that can turn some of those draws – the most in the league this season after the joint-most in 2019-20 – into wins, especially against those sides they would expect to beat.

Retaining the core of the side, and adding those extra goals, should take Millwall to the next level.

The Lions are after at least a centreback, attacking midfielder and striker in the summer, and they also want to complete a permanent move for Scott Malone. The left wing-back, 30, is out of contract at Derby at the end of June.

“I don’t think you ever want a big overhaul,” Rowett told the News. “When you’ve finished eighth – we’re sat in ninth right now [before the midweek games] – you don’t want to change the dynamic too much.

“What you want to do is make some good quality acquisitions. I always look at three or four that haven’t really featured much this season and end up leaving, and three or four coming in that can go straight into your team.

“Then you’ve made your squad better, you’ve made your team more competitive.

“I hope that will be the case at the end of the season. I’m quite looking forward

to seeing where we are.

“I can’t wait to get to next season.”

Malone has been a big hit in his second spell with the club. Before the game against Bournemouth on Wednesday evening he had scored five goals this season.

The former Cardiff and Fulham defender has been one of Millwall’s best attacking outlets and one of their most consistent players in a demanding campaign. Malone is on course to play more games this season than in any other season in his professional career.

Rowett was asked if Malone’s success during his loan from Derby could convince him to make a permanent switch to Millwall.

excellent for us,” Rowett said. “He’s been up there with goals and assists and been a part of a lot of the chances that we’ve created.

“That’s why we brought him in for that attacking left-sided role to go and release him to get in the box and create things.

He’s been excellent at that.

“But, of course, he’s out of contract at the end of the season and when someone’s done so well for you there’s always that little bit of fear that someone else comes in and nabs him.

“We’re certainly in discussions and we’d like to get something tied up quite quickly.

“But he’s under contract until the end of the season with Derby so we’ll have to see.”

The Lions skipper is one of a number of players that are out of contract at the end of June, but the former Ireland international insists his only focus is on helping Millwall finish as high as possible in the league with three games left.

Pearce, 32, has made 26 appearances this season and 71 in total since he initially joined on loan from Derby in January 2019.

The centre-back was instantly a big influence in the dressing room and Neil Harris signed him permanently the following summer before making him club captain.

Millwall manager Gary Rowett said last week the club still plan some talks over contracts at the end of the season.

Pearce didn’t give much away when asked about his future this week.

“It’s a great football club,” Pearce said. “It’s been fantastic. Everyone knows it’s a fantastic club to play for.

“It’s a great place to be and it’s all really positive.

“It’s a case of we’ve got [three] games left. Everyone’s just focussed on playing out these last few games.

“That will sort itself out come whenever.

“All everyone’s focus is on at the moment is the last part of the season, finishing as strongly as possible and going from there.”
