former housing boss in line for ‘golden goodbye’

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Ex-Southwark Council housing boss councillor Leo Pollak could still be in line for a £5,000 ‘golden goodbye’ payment despite resigning over a ‘serious error of judgement’.

At last week’s council assembly meeting, Labour councillors refused to back the Liberal Democrats’ call for the payments to be scrapped in cases where cabinet members have either been sacked or resigned over conduct concerns.

Liberal Democrat councillor Anood AlSamerai told councillors: “I have always thought these golden goodbyes are an absolute scandal… I think it’s outrageous and I think that the fact the leader didn’t even have the guts to tell us that Cllr Pollak will be entitled to claim £5,000 of public money says it all frankly.

“The fact remains that Southwark is the only council in the country that has these golden goodbyes,” she said.

“The specific amendment we are putting forward tonight is about whether somebody who has resigned for poor conduct should be entitled to that golden goodbye.

“If you were sacked for gross misconduct in a job you would not be entitled to a notice period.

“What Cllr Pollak did was absolutely outrageous and unacceptable and what worries me is that I don’t think the Labour party in this borough gets that.”

Previous written questions, submitted in advance of the meeting by the Liberal Democrats, had questioned whether or not the former cabinet member would receive a payment, and if so how much, and asked whether they are a good use of public money.

Cllr Williams swerved the question by insisting that “due process” needed to be followed while the monitoring officer investigated Cllr Pollak’s actions while in his former executive role.

“I don’t think it would be right or appropriate for any of us to prejudge her results of her investigation,” Cllr Williams added.

He also said the reasoning behind the policy in general was an important one as the payments, given to those who can be unexpectedly shuffled out of a role or after an election, claiming it means a more diverse pool of candidates are attracted to roles in public office and not simply those with savings.

Cllr Leo Pollak As the News reported, the former housing boss had been secretly running an unattributed Twitter account SouthwarkYIMBY - through which he promoted council housing building programmes and defended the council’s record on housing, but also argued with and harangued residents and campaigners critical of the schemes.

The current Southwark Council policy states that cabinet members are entitled to the ‘loss of office’ payment except if it is the last year of their term and they are not seeking reelection.

They must also have served at least one year in cabinet. The payment is calculated based on time in post.

The result is a light and airy space that strips back many of the features in the original design in favour of a minimalist design, including a large, frameless skylight above the stairs. Tall hedges have been added to the front garden, while the back garden has been given local edible plants.

“Because they are not that deep, the properties in this estate have quite a nice connection between the house and the front and back garden,” Pircu said. “We wanted to take advantage of that because it’s not something you usually see in London.”

Pircu and Rusu said they were keen to work with London councils in future, including Southwark, after seeing how well organised the space in this house was.

“We’d like to work more with local councils to build community spaces.

With this project we really liked the opportunity to study how Southwark worked.”

South London-based architect

Adam Draper’s first project with his new practice Draper Studio was an extension and refurbishment of an Edwardian terraced house in Peckham.

“I’m really quite honoured to be on the shortlist alongside so many great projects,” Draper said.

Working with the homeowner and a trusted contractor, Draper built out the kitchen at the rear of the house, as well as renovating some of the other rooms.

“It’s quite a tight terraced house, and there was already a room at the bottom of the garden,” he added. “So there was a risk that we could obliterate the garden space with the extension.”

Both architect and homeowner are very pleased with the result. “As an architect it’s really hard to achieve good quality design on a shoestring, so I was delighted that this worked out so well,” Draper said.

Another extension, on Amott Road in Peckham, completes the trio of Southwark projects shortlisted for the awards.

The final awards will be announced in May.

“The property was somewhat small but well organised. We wanted to use the space to its maximum efficiency,” said Anamaria Pircu, one of the partners at Shad Thames-based practice Vatraa, whose work on a house in Bermondsey’s William Ellis Way is among the 22 projects shortlisted for the Don’t Move, Improve prize run by New London Architecture.

The prize aims to show what architects can do even in small London properties and with relatively low budgets.

Pircu and her partner Bogdan Rusu said it was important not to extend the property to be “respectful” of the condition of the rest of the estate, which stretches back behind Bermondsey tube station.

“We discussed how we could improve the space,” Rusu said. “Of course, an ex-council house is something many architects would not touch because they don’t see the potential.”

“But we met with the owner and discussed space efficiency, openness and character. We had a collaborative approach.”

Building started in late 2019, but had to be put on hold briefly in March 2020 because of a plaster shortage at the start of the pandemic as construction shops shut down. The indoor work was

Southwark schools set to lose £1.2 milion in funding As a result of Government change on premium grants

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Schools in Southwark stand to lose £1.2 million in pupil premium funding after ministers changed how grants for disadvantaged children are calculated.

In February the Department of Education announced pupil premium grants for this financial year (2021-22) would only be given for pupils who were receiving free school meals from October 2020, rather than the usual January cutoff date.

Pupil premium funding is based on who is receiving free school meals, with primaries receiving £1,345 per pupil, and secondaries £955.

According to government data obtained by MP Neil Coyle, this means that more than a million is expected to be lost to schools in our borough alone - with one school expected to lose out on £60,000. The data does not, however, name which schools are most affected.

In March Coyle wrote to education minister Nick Gibb asking for clarity on the number of children no longer included by changing the dates. He later said he was ‘appalled’ by the minister’s ‘attempt to side-step’ the question.

Gibb’s reply said that moving the date back to October would provide ‘greater certainty around future funding levels’, and that data was being collected on how many schools and children this would affect but is not yet available.

The Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP also highlighted his concerns that Southwark schools would be particularly hard-hit at a meeting organised with the minister and local headteachers.

After the event, attended by leaders from a dozen schools across Southwark, Coyle told the News: “Southwark schools deserve our thanks and praise for doing so much to educate remotely and in person

for key workers’ children throughout the pandemic.

“Access to the laptops promised by the government has been patchy at best, delayed and insufficient more routinely.

“But funding concerns were also raised due to a sneaky cut ministers are trying to impose which reduces help under the pupil premium system.”

“I’ll be following up these issues with heads and the minister and hope the government U-turns on a cut after such massive efforts by schools to keep equipping children to have the brightest future.”

The National Association of Headteachers says two thirds of schools it had surveyed across the country said the cut leaves them worse off even when taking into account COVID-19 recovery funding.

General secretary Paul Whiteman said: “These figures suggest that a large number of schools in England have lost more funding due to this date change than they are being given in the government’s so-called education recovery package.

“The government is giving with one hand while knowingly taking away with the other.

“A three month gap may not seem like it would make a big difference but, given the volatile financial situation for many families due to COVID-19, it is an exceptionally bad time to implement this change.”

He added: “The government must put this right. We aren’t asking for additional money here.

“Only for what schools would have received if this census date change hadn’t been implemented. If they don’t they will be abandoning those children most in need at the most critical time.”

As the News has reported, 44,000 in Southwark are now unemployed or furloughed. Economists have predicted unemployment could rise to ten per cent by December 2021; despite a post-pandemic bounceback.

The number of people claiming Universal Credit, often an indicator of families eligible for free school meals has also sharply risen.

In April 2020 Southwark Council received 800 applications from social housing tenants in just a three-week period.

As the News has reported, the primary had been under threat of being closed while its pupils moved to St George’s Cathedral Primary, over a mile away in Westminster Bridge Road, due to declining pupil numbers and funding.

But in a statement published on Tuesday.

March 30, John Camilleri, who is taking over the headship this month, told the

News the future of the ‘good’ Ofsted-rated school has been secured. He is taking over from previous headteacher Hyacinth Appah, who is retiring after 26 years working at the school.

“The Southwark Diocese Education commission confirmed through the school governing body that the school will remain open and continue to provide quality Catholic education to the children of Walworth and beyond,” he said.

“The recent good news about the future of the school was a big relief to staff as well as parents and means that English Martyrs’ Primary school will be able to continue to serve the community in the years to come.”

Education Commission of the Catholic Diocese of Southwark this week but was told: “There remains no comment we can make at this stage.”

As we reported last month, a number of schools in Southwark are believed to be threatened with closure due to declining pupil rolls.

At most immediate threat is St John’s Walworth, which has a deficit of more than £350,000 for the next academic year. A consultation was launched in March after its governing body announced the Church of England school could close as soon as September 2020 - despite falling within the catchment area of the wider Old Kent Road regeneration scheme.

Cassie Buchanan, executive head of Charles Dickens primary school in Borough and lead headteacher at London South Teaching School Alliance, thanked all the donors on a Zoom call last week for their “investment in Southwark’s future”.

Going into lockdown “was really, really hard on families and schools,” she said.

“And... it shone a light on the huge inequality in our communities and the lengths that families are going to to help their children be part of online schooling.

“In my school alone we heard of stories where children were sharing phones and peering into tiny little screens, sacrificing the learning of younger children so that

older children could learn.”

Families were making “very hard decisions that no parent should have to make,” Buchanan went on. “And as schools we were really trying to help and we were helped by the [Department for Education] but that gap was massive, beyond the scope of any school to fill.”

The headteacher added that the laptop programme had allowed schools to do more with children than was possible even before the pandemic - like join music and drama lessons, choirs and even therapy that may have been out of reach without online access.

“Students are able to get closer to arts, and science,” she added. “We got to watch chickens being born at Charles Dickens because there was something that the national farmers union were doing. We couldn’t have had the chickens in school.”

Councillor Jasmine Ali, Southwark’s cabinet member for schools who helped spearhead the fundraiser, also offered her “heartfelt thanks” on the call to all the donors and to the many people who organised the campaign.

More than 1,400 laptops were given out

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark schoolchildren have thanked the local residents, charities, community groups and businesses that helped get more than 1,400 laptops and other devices, as well as broadband, to students at nearly 90 schools in lockdown.

The News reported in January that Southwark Council was launching a matched-funding appeal to get the tech equipment children needed as teaching went online in the third lockdown.

Nearly 2,400 children did not have a laptop for online learning at the start of the year. Councillor Jasmine Ali, the local authority’s cabinet member for schools, said at the time that the campaign was launched after months of delays and limited funding from the government.

The campaign, which was run with London South Teaching School Alliance, raised £157,801 in cash donations and devices. That enabled organisers to get 1,425 new and good quality second-hand devices to students at 88 schools across the borough. Some 1,120 local residents, charities, community groups and businesses took part.

Organisers also identified 1,503 students without a reliable internet connection.

Internet providers Community Fibre and Hyperoptic also gave broadband connections to 47 families.

Community Fibre will continue to provide broadband for school children until December 2021 and Hyperoptic until the end of August 2021, Southwark Council said.

vaccine pop-up at mosque a hit

A pop-up vaccination clinic at Peckham Islamic Centre has been hailed as a huge success after 320 people turned up to receive their jabs last Saturday, March 27.

The clinic, run by Southwark GPs, was set up to encourage anyone who is eligible to get their jab in a location that is convenient and familiar to many in the community - whether they are members of the mosque or had a different faith or none.

It is part of a series of events aimed at promoting vaccine uptake and answering any questions or concerns people may have about the COVID-19 vaccine.

As the News reported last week, uptake in Southwark as a whole is lagging behind other parts of the country, with Camberwell and Peckham particularly affected.

Black and ethnic minority groups are also less likely to take the vaccine even if they are in a priority group. There is also a stark difference between uptake in wealthier and more deprived areas.

Ali, a member of Peckham Mosque decided to take the vaccine because it is being offered at his place of work.

He said “I took the vaccine because prevention is better than cure and I would like to be able to travel once it is permitted.”

Umar Elahi, the Founding trustee of Peckham Islamic Centre, had called

on people to do their ‘duty to protect yourselves and your families’, and reiterated that vaccines are halal, kosher and vegan friendly.

Cllr Kieron Williams, Leader of Southwark Council who attended the pop-up session, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people getting their vaccine on Saturday.

“Pop-ups like this are one of the many ways we are working to make sure people from all parts of the community feel the vaccine is available and right for them.

“I would like to thank everyone at Peckham Islamic Centre, including all

the volunteers who were helping out, as well as all the NHS and council staff for their hard work in supporting our residents as they protect themselves, their loved ones and their community.”

According to the latest figures, as of last Friday (March 26), over 83,000 people registered with a Southwark GP had received a first dose of the vaccine.

There is particular urgency to catch up and ensure those most vulnerable to the virus are vaccinated now restrictions on meeting outdoors have been eased, and in preparation for the return on non-essential business openings in April.

Southwark Council has reminded residents eager to celebrate lockdown lifting throughout March and April that the injunction for Burgess Park will remain in place throughout spring and summer 2021.

As the News reported last year, residents were left distraught by all-night raves, anti-social behaviour and rampant littering.

After a spate of unlicensed music events that turned violent and continuing complaints of public sex

acts being performed in daylight hours near children’s play areas, the council and police secured a court injunction last September.

The injunction specifically bans amplified sound/music; lighting equipment; arquees; gatherings of more than 20 people, after 9pm; sexual activity; carrying a weapon and fighting and violence.

Those who do not comply are in contempt of court and can be fined and, potentially, face up to two years in prison.

Johnson floated last week.

Johnson told a House of Commons committee that pubs could avoid social distancing measures in future through testing and asking punters to show some kind of proof that they have been vaccinated or have had the virus and so

may have a degree of immunity.

Industry groups slammed the proposals as "unworkable", although no decision has been made yet on any of the measures and Johnson said the choice to enforce this kind of programme could be left up to pub landlords.

And Isaac Tooby, co-founder and director of Parched Pubs, which runs the White Horse and the Montpelier in Peckham as well as the Roebuck in Borough, and is soon to take over the Grove House in Camberwell, said he would not be in favour of the idea.

"It would be very difficult for pubs to enforce, I think, " he told the News. "It could be easy to fake documentation.

With all the the things pubs have gone through over the past year, we don't need the extra costs that it would mean."

Various outlets have reported that one of the ideas the Government is exploring is adding a "Covid-19 passport" function into the existing NHS app - which could mean lower costs for individual pubs.

But Tooby, who stressed that he is "pro

the vaccine" himself, added that any vaccine passporting for pubs could also be a problem on civil liberties grounds.

"Would I want people who are not into the vaccine to not be able to come in?

I don't know. I wouldn’t want to say to people that they can't come to our pubs, especially younger people who haven't had the chance to have a vaccine yet."

Tooby added that he would be in favour of any measures that would let pubs reopen fully and safely. As things currently stand, pubs are set to reopen outdoor areas on April 12 and indoor areas with restrictions on mixing on May 17.

All social distancing rules are due to be lifted on June 21, although the government has long said the timetable could change if the Covid-19 situation in the UK worsens.

Industry group the British Institute of Innkeeping slammed the idea of vaccine passports and urged the government to stick to the June 21 date for the end of social distancing.

Boss Bill Dalton said: “The recovery of

our nation’s economy will rely heavily on our vibrant and vital sector, which contributes almost £60 billion to the treasury each year.

"To introduce this unworkable solution at a point where our pubs need to be open and trading freely and fully, will seriously endanger the survival of our pubs and materially damage the communities, high streets, livelihoods, suppliers & brewers and local employment that rely so heavily upon them."

One poll suggested that Brits generally support the idea of a vaccine passport during the vaccine rollout. A YouGov survey from the start of March showed almost six in ten were in favour. More than three in ten were against the idea.

Globe theatre reopens with social seating

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Shakespeare's Globe plans to reopen its main outdoor theatre from May 19 for socially distanced performances.

The Bankside theatre will put on A Midsummer Night's Dream, Romeo and Juliet and Twelfth Night at the Globe this summer. King Lear, originally slated for 2021, has been pushed back to next year.

A Midsummer Night's Dream will open the season. Romeo and Juliet opens on June 26 and Twelfth Night on June 29. All of the productions are on through October.

Later in the year the Globe will also put on Metamorphoses, a new play inspired by the Roman poet Ovid, whose stories included Daedalus and Icarus and Orpheus and Eurydice and who is thought to have been an influence on

Shakespeare. Metamorphoses is set to open indoors in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse from September 30.

The yard, the cheaper area for the standing "groundling" audience that harks back to Shakespearean times, will have seats for the first time due to social distancing rules, the Globe said.

Artistic director Michelle Terry said: “To even be announcing a season means that we are inching ever closer to getting back to doing the thing that we love, the thing that the Globe was built for, and the thing that so many of us, artists and audience alike, have lost during this time: sharing time, space and story with as many people as is safe.

Terry, who will also play Viola in Twelfth Night, added: "This is a historic moment, and not to be underestimated; we have a long way to go as we emerge and heal from this, but theatre can help us get there: that’s what it’s for.

"To express the often inexpressible, bear the often unbearable, laugh, cry, be – safely – together. The readiness is all and Shakespeare’s Globe is ready.”

Safety measures will be in place for live audiences, including staggered arrival times, allocated entrances and no intervals. Drinks also have to be ordered in advance.

All four plays will also be livestreamed on selected dates or people who cannot get to the theatre.

The Globe is also putting on its annual Playing Shakespeare performances to help state secondary schoolchildren from London and Birmingham get more interested in the plays. This year up to 18,000 children will get to see A Midsummer Night's Dream for free or heavily discounted from September 28.

Priority booking for members has already started for this year's season.

Non-members can book from April 8.

Design museum needs £35,000 to stay afloat

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The Fashion and Textile museum in Bermondsey is fundraising to stay afloat after losing 80 per cent of its income in the Covid-19 pandemic.

The museum, on Bermondsey Street, says it needs £35,000 to keep going, of which it has already raised about £14,000.

Lockdown has cost the museum £32,000 per month on average, organisers say.

Most of the museum’s income before the pandemic came from visitors, workshops and donations.

Museums in London have been shut since mid-December after the capital was put into “tier 3” coronavirus rules and then national lockdown. The Fashion and Textile museum was shut from March 2020 amid the first outbreak and reopened in August.

Staff have put on online events while the museum has been closed to the public.

Upcoming events include talks about sustainable fashion, the history of fashion magazine Vogue and the role of women in post-war textile design.

The museum which was founded in 2003 by Dame Zandra Rhodes, has had some emergency funding from Southwark Council through the local restrictions programme.

It has also applied for National Lottery funding as part of the government’s plan to bail out cultural centres hit by Covid-19 closures, and will find out if it has been successful by the end of the month. But a spokesperson for the museum said this money would not replace its lost income.

The museum is set to reopen on May 18 in line with government rules for moving out of lockdown. Supporters, designers and people who work at the museum have spoken out about its importance to the industry.

“Through the Covid-19 pandemic the Fashion and Textile Museum has become

more important than ever, contributing to knowledge at a time when we must preserve, rather than destroy and forget,” Rhodes said.

“It is essential that we preserve a museum which exhibits design histories that might otherwise be ignored.

"The Fashion and Textile Museum is an incredible place to volunteer,” volunteer Danielle Higgins said. “It's a warm, nurturing place, full of kindness. It means no matter what else is happening in the world, the few hours spent there are going to be informative, aesthetically beautiful and fun."

Fashion designer Kitty Joseph added: “"I was really lucky to be part of the Fashion and Textile Museum’s encouraging, creative world and have hugely benefited from the community, support and education I’ve gained.”

Fabrizio Paltani, the managing director of Camm & Hooper, which manages several London pubs and restaurants including Tanner & Co, added that staff are “all optimistic that we’re going in the right direction”.

Tanner & Co, a restaurant and bar on Bermondsey Street, will reopen its outdoor area on April 12 in line with government rules for

hospitality venues coming out of lockdown - with room for 72 people.

“It’s a good sized area,” Paltani added. “The demand is definitely there. Some shifts are already booked in completely at the weekend.

“I’m sure we’ll book up the ones earlier in the week as well, as people realise it’s difficult to get something on the weekend already. Eventually the whole week will be pretty full.”

Paltani went on: “We have a new menu so we see this as a chance for us to have a fresh start as well.

“We’re really working hard to get everything ready to reopen, help everyone relax and have a good chat with friends.”

Deuce Rebellion, which is owned by Rod Eslamieh, who also runs the Chapter 72 cocktail bar on the same street, opened for takeaway in mid-March.

“The whole concept behind it was quite weird on paper - it sounded like it shouldn’t work,” Eslamieh said. “You know if you go to a juice bar you might expect to get a kale salad or smashed avocado. We were trying to find a fun balance here.

“The hot dogs are quite unusual because they’ve got kimchi toppings or you could have a meat one or a vegan one as well.”

The name refers to the tennis courts on the nearby Tanner Street park.

Eslamieh’s other Bermondsey Street business, Chapter 72, has stayed open for takeaway throughout lockdown, but is reopening its outdoor seating area on April 12 with room for about eight people.

fighting to keep their albion

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Rotherhithe residents have spoken up in protest at the loss of pubs serving the local community.

Planning permission was given for homes and a “ground floor drinking establishment” on the site of the former Albion pub on Albion Street in 2019.

Local councillor Stephanie Cryan previously “called in” the development over concerns about the size of the eight flats it would include - four studios, three one-bed flats and one two-bed property, according to a sales brochure - but permission was later granted.

The former pub, which has lain empty for years, was put on the market in March 2021 for £1.25m with planning permission, but local group Save Our Albion are urging Southwark Council to reconsider the plans. Some 44 people gathered outside the pub in protest on Sunday.

“Rotherhithe and Bermondsey

residents have witnessed dozens of their cherished boozers lost to the wrecking ball in recent years,” a spokesperson for the group told the News. “They are now saying enough is enough."

"It's now time for local councillors to join with local residents not against them. Working class pubs such as the Albion are a vital part of the Canada Water Masterplan and wider Rotherhithe area. This iconic landmark pub has to remain in Albion Street.`" Campaigners argue that the loss of the pub would be a heritage issue, given the building’s distinctive mock Tudor design. The property is not listed but is considered a non-designated heritage asset by Southwark Council. The 2019 planning application dismissed the pub as “plain” and “a typical example of an interwar Neo-Tudor public house, which are very common”.

The chairman of the residents’ association for the Clegg, Murdoch and Neptune houses near the pub wrote in a comment objecting to the original planning application that: "The Albion (1928) is almost exactly contemporary

with our estate (completed 1929) and both are good examples of late arts and crafts style architecture. They were strongly influenced by the garden city movement of Ebenezer Howard and tried to bring some of the attributes of rural vernacular buildings to the inner city…

“The pub makes a positive contribution to the important view of the Norwegian Church and its new garden from the west and should, in our view, be listed. The rather grim proposed replacement would seem very much out of place.

“Albion Street has been shamefully neglected over the past 30 years despite the vast amount of regeneration that has taken place in SE16 as a whole. The two pubs and the Norwegian church are the only buildings at the west end of the street to have survived the war and given the importance that this street has had in the history of Rotherhithe we very much hope that they can be preserved.”

Southwark Council was contacted for comment.

trams could return to southwark by 2025

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk New tram lines could make a return to Southwark seventy years after the original network was ripped out, as councillors admit the Bakerloo line extension alone cannot solve the borough’s transport woes.

Days after the council unanimously voted through a motion committing to explore alternative transport infrastructure including tram lines, private company Trampower told the News it was on track to submit a new planning application for its “Southwark Supertram” by the end of 2021.

It is not the first time the company, which claims it can pay for the £70 million new tram line through private finance and not TfL or Southwark Council subsidies, has proposed the idea.

Previous iterations have been discussed in the 2010s and 2019, but have so far failed to make progress despite successful tram schemes being built in several British cities throughout the 90s and 2000s - including Croydon.

If it were to be constructed, tracks would be glued to the road rather than dug in, making construction far quicker and less invasive than other forms of transport including new railway lines or tubes.

Maintenance is also minimal. As trams run on renewable electricity they quickly become a carbon neutral form of transport - unlike the costly process of creating new train lines or underground routes.

Trampower says, if approved, the new line could open to passengers as early as 2025.

At a council assembly meeting on Wednesday, March 26, the motion that backed exploring new tram lines along a host of other green transport options gained cross-party support.

During the subsequent debate the council not only confirmed it was actively looking into ideas to create the first new tramline in over a century in Southwark, but it also recognised the need for ‘rapid’ solutions in the next few years regardless of whether the Bakerloo line extension ever actually goes

ahead, currently projected to not open for around two decades' time.

Cllr Radha Burgess, deputy cabinet member for low traffic Southwark, confirmed: “We are proactively looking at tram systems, rapid bus routes and walking and cycling infrastructure. Our ambition is significant and political commitment solid.

“It should be noted that the government has removed a significant proportion of transport funding for our city.”

She described the process of identifying suitable routes and launching a public consultation into such a significant overhaul of the transport network as a potentially ‘mammoth’ task. “The collaborative work starts now,” she added.

Although many Labour councillors piped up to say the Bakerloo line had to be the priority for the borough, including ex council leader Peter John who told his colleagues to stop the self-defeatism, there seemed to be an all-round willingness to accept the extension was unlikely to happen anytime soon and in the meantime the council needed to explore lower carbon options that could be achieved more quickly.

One key point raised by Liberal Democrat Cllr Damien O’Brien, who put forward the original motion for debate, is that trams appealed to a broader demographic than cycle lanes - especially car users.

Croydon Tramlink, which took six years to build at a cost of £200m, has been running for two decades. Research has found that around one in five of its passengers had switched from driving cars, and the route generated around £1.5 billion of investment into the area.

Saying that trams put ‘smiles on people’s faces’, Southwark Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Nick Johnson told the assembly: “The Bakerloo line extension will not be delivered in the next twenty years.

“The administration has gambled a whole housing delivery plan for the Old Kent Road on the basis of this single line extension and it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.

“We need a plan B - or as I like to say a tram B. I think we all like trams in this council assembly and I’m pleased to see this

administration’s willingness to consider them.

“The best way to kill a good idea is to agree to set up a committee to review it.

“Let’s not just agree to set up a committee this time, let’s make this happen. Trams are cool. We all know this.”

Fellow Liberal Democrat Victor Chamberlain said trams were a ‘tangible’ solution to the pollution, congestion and cost difficulties faced by the council, and slammed its record on transport delivery.

“The administration has failed to deliver Rotherhithe bridge, Camberwell train station remains closed, the RV1 was axed, and Bakerloo line funding still isn’t there,” he said.

“It is absolutely time that we recreated the Piccadilly of the south at the Elephant," he added.

Former transport chief Richard Livingstone said he welcomed the council looking at all options and admitted: “We do need a rapid transport alternative along

the Old Kent Road, that might be a rapid bus lane that might be a tram as well.”

But he cautioned that trams were still expensive to build and previous proposed schemes, including a much-hyped crossriver tram scrapped by Boris Johnson, had encountered funding difficulties.

“Putting all our eggs inw the tram basket would be very dangerous,” he added.

And while Peter John said focusing too much on trams could see the key priority of securing the Bakerloo line being neglected, his backbencher colleague Richard Leeming said the idea trams were a cheap option when they can cost several million a mile was plainly wrong.

“I think this is less likely to happen than the Liberal Democrats winning again in Southwark,” he added.

But despite their warnings, the indications that the council’s cabinet are taking the option seriously are all there. Even if the Southwark Supertram application is not successful, the council’s public support for new tram routes could see any number of alternative proposals put forward especially now it has the added pressure of aiming to achieve its carbon neutral status by 2030.

Southwark’s tram and trolleybus network once extended across the borough with routes connecting Waterloo and Dulwich and Walworth and Surrey Quays, and connected with mainline train stations.

They were closed in the 1950s.

The proposed Southwark Supertram would see a route to run from London Bridge to Denmark Hill via Newington, Elephant and Castle and Walworth.

Although the Bakerloo line extension has been backed by the government and its route safeguarded from development - as the News reported last year- TfL didn’t ask the government for funding for the project saying it was being ‘realistic’ about what large-scale projects could be completed.

It came after a disastrous year for TfL’s finances as passenger numbers nosedived during lockdown. Crossrail is also heavily delayed and £450 million-and-counting over budget.

‘consultation on overhauling council housing banding needs to be delayed’ Housing groups say the plans are not clear

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Housing campaigners, tenants associations and Southwark Law Centre are all calling for Southwark Council to ‘pause, amend and extend’ a consultation into the proposed, huge changes to its social housing allocation policy and priority banding.

Although some of the draft plans, including greater priority for people who have experienced domestic abuse and Armed Forces personnel, have been welcomed other changes have sparked concern, including a greater emphasis on finding housing in the private rented sector.

Southwark Law Centre, Housing Action Southwark and Lambeth (HASL), and Southwark Group of Tenants Organisation (SGTO) all say residents, including those most affected by the changes, need more time to fully understand what is being proposed and to share their views.

They say running the consultation online during the pandemic means changes could be ‘rushed’ through.

A HASL spokesperson described the documents as ‘very difficult to understand’, and ‘unclear’.

“These are significant changes that should not be rushed through during a global pandemic and lockdown,” she said.

“We're asking the council to pause, amend and extend the consultation so that Southwark residents can meaningfully engage with the consultation.

“Those most affected by these changes, such as homeless households and families in overcrowded housing, have also been

most impacted by the COVID crisis.

“So many families are struggling with day to day survival that engaging with the new waiting list rules is a task they simply cannot manage at the moment.

“Social distancing restrictions also mean that these households cannot access face to face support to respond to the consultation.

“As well as the timing of the consultation, the new proposals are a complete overhaul of the housing waiting list rules and are very difficult to understand, especially with the very limited information the council has provided.

“The online survey does not list some of the major changes and the framing of some of the questions in the survey is misleading and unclear.

“We've been working with Southwark Law Centre and Southwark Group of Tenants Organisations attempting to understand the new policy and we're still struggling.

“The proposed changes could force families into smaller homes than they need, causing overcrowding, force homeless families into the insecure private rented sector, and create longer waiting times for those with urgent medical needs.

“The increased priority for survivors of domestic violence is one ray of light.

“One of these changes would see a major transformation to the homelessness process with homeless families encouraged to give up their homeless duty and move into private housing with the incentive of being placed into band two.

“This is basically facilitating queue jumping by those who are able to access private rented housing and could make it

“The significant consequences of this policy are not explained on the survey.

“We have recently had some productive discussions with the council about the consultation process and they have agreed to make some amendments which is very helpful but we feel strongly that the council needs to pause the current consultation in order to make it as fair and accessible as possible.

“The new policy will affect Southwark residents' access to social housing for years to come. It is vital that it is done correctly.”

HASL, which provides support for people navigating the housing system including those who are in temporary accommodation or appealing council decisions, has produced a template email to help residents respond to the consultation.

This is the first infrastructure project as a result of the council’s ‘Southwark Stands Together’ programme, launched last year, in response to discrimination and racism experienced by people from ethnic minority backgrounds, many of whom have also been more affected

by COVID-19 whether in terms of ill health or financially.

The council put together a panel of Peckham residents to choose which architects should take on the project from an all black and ethnic minority background list. Spheron Architects were selected, unanimously.

Sydney Simms, one of the panellists and a Southwark Young Advisor, said: “I was so glad not only to find out that I had been offered a place as a panellist, but that young people were included.

“Young people are a key part of our community and often our voices go

Being unable to hold meetings to discuss the changes with members is also another concern; especially given recent changes to the tenant and resident organisations in the borough.

“Local Area Housing Forums and Tenants and Homeowners Forums which are being set up to replace the customary tenant participation structures are not properly constituted,” Cris added.

“Crucially Advice Centres might not be offering face to face appointments later on in the year to help tenants understand why their entitlement to suitable council housing has changed.

“Southwark Council really should listen to the local law centres and campaigners requesting them to pause, extend and amend this consultation.

Southwark Law Centre echoed these views, telling the News it supported HASL and SGTO’s position and believed extending the consultation would give residents more time to learn about how the proposed changes could affect them and to respond fully.

“Spheron’s attention to detail, understanding of Peckham, and full

comprehension of the complexities of and positive potential of the square was music to my ears.

“I hope they deliver a space that is truly community-centric, safe by day as well as night, and set up to allow for the flourishing and celebration of the creative arts and Peckham’s unique Peckhamness.”

The south-easterly pocket of Southwark made the rankings alongside Teddington; Muswell Hill; Primrose Hill; Walthamstow and Winchmore Hill due to its independent shops and community spirit.

The guide describes it as ‘South London’s premier village’, sandwiched between ‘trendy Peckham’ and ‘affluent East Dulwich.

“It has a green surrounded by independent shops, locals who are justly proud of their neighbourhood - check the Nunhead rocks! Facebook group if you’re in any doubt - and a welcoming pub culture (when restrictions allow),” the judges said.

They listed the area’s top pubs as The Pyrotechnists Arms, Old Nun’s Head and the Ivy House and local attractions as Nunhead Cemetery and, er, Peckham Lido.

They may have to rethink that one as it’s been out of use since 1987 and a campaign to save and reopen the venue is still preplanning permission.

The leading homelessness charity is aiming to turn a vacant building in Lugard Road into eight flats as part of its independent living programme,which helps young homeless people into employment or apprenticeships.

Modular homes are similar to prefabs but benefit from cutting-edge designs and materials. They are often far cheaper to build and can be constructed in half the time.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A 33-year-old man has been found guilty of GBH on a woman in Southwark and the false imprisonment, GBH and rape of a woman in Haringey in a joint trial last week.

Yonattan Aroldy Gonzalez Pineda, of no fixed abode, was found guilty on Friday, 26 March.

The court heard that on November 30, 2019, Pineda harassed a woman, known to him at a bar in Southwark, repeatedly trying to engage her in conversation despite her telling him to leave her alone.

After she and a friend left the bar, Pineda followed them and glassed his victim with a bottle, leaving her with lacerations to the face. The women were able to run to a nearby police station and receive medical treatment.

Pineda was arrested on December 3 and charged by postal requisition on April 9

with grievous bodily harm. He was bailed to appear at Inner London Crown Court for trial on May 7, 2020.

While awaiting trial, on June 23, 2020 Pineda assaulted, imprisoned and raped a woman who was visiting his house in West Green Road in Haringey.

After reporting the incident to police the next day officers launched a manhunt and captured Pineda on July 4, 2020. He was arrested on 4 July 2020 on suspicion of rape, false imprisonment and GBH. Pineda pleaded not guilty to all counts for both incidents but was convicted following a two week trial at Wood Green Crown Court, on March 15, 2021. He will be sentenced on May 28..

Detective Constable Myles Bossman, from the Met’s North Area Public Protection Team said: “Pineda is highly dangerous individual.

“He has subjected two women who he formed a relationship with to significant violence and has shown no remorse for his actions.

“The verdict is welcomed as it sends a clear

message that such acts will not be tolerated.

“I would like to thank both victims for coming forward and supporting the police investigation.

“I hope this conviction goes some way to providing closure for the victims after what must have been a horrific experience.”

Detective Chief Inspector Naomi Edwards, from the Met’s North Area Public Protection Investigations, said: “This unit remains dedicated to protecting the most vulnerable members of our society.

“I hope this result reassures our local community that sexual assault and violence will not be tolerated in any form.

“Victims of abuse and sexual violence should feel confident and trust that their local officers will work tirelessly to seek justice and protect those at risk of harm.

“The Met encourages anyone who is victim or witness to sexual assault, to contact police. We have specially trained officers who will give

advice and ongoing support.

“Should you wish to report a crime, you can do so by contacting police on 101 or reporting online. Always call 999 in an emergency.’’

The News reported earlier this month on the plans submitted by pub owner Young’s & Co. to Southwark Council to add a new bar and dining area, noting that the company said it got a generally positive reaction from local business group Better Bankside and that there was only one objection on the application.

But residents of the Falcon Point block, directly behind the Founder’s Arms, later said the council had not told them about the plans and the first public notice was posted on a pole outside the pub on March 19. A spokesperson for Southwark Council said on March 22 that letters were being processed and would be sent “imminently”. “We will vigorously oppose any planning application that may be submitted if the proposals are anything like those on which we were recently consulted,” residents told Young’s.

The group’s main arguments against the extension are that a “significant number of flats” will lose their view of the Thames; people in the new part of the pub will be able to see into some flats; more people and more deliveries will mean more noise, and that the area is mainly residential.

Falcon Point residents also argue that the plans are out of character with the area.

Young’s said in the planning statement that the proposals are “an appropriate design solution”. Planning documents show the company consulted Falcon Point residents in 2018 and adapted its proposal before submitting it.

A spokesperson for Young’s said it was pleased that locals took part in consultations, resulting in changes to the plans before they were submitted.

Young’s added in its planning application that the extension would create 22 jobs at the peak of summer business.

No right to buy?

Left-handed local residents could be prioritised for an innovative new housing scheme - which will see a development built with lefties only allowed to apply.

Left-In Developments, the firm seeking planning approval for the block - to be named Left Fields - argue that buildings traditionally cater for right-handed inhabitants - with everything from ‘door handles to fridge doors to light switches planned with the right-handed in mind.’

“The world is built for right-handers and it’s time to end this inbuilt discrimination - we all have a right to be left”, a spokeperson added.

The scheme, which could provide up to twenty flats at market rate, could be up and running in the south of the borough by 2023 - neatly coinciding with National Lefthander Year.

Applicants will have to pass a series of supervised tests, including writing passages from famous left-handed writers such as H.G Wells and Mark Twain with their left hand, discussing influential lefthanders throughout the ages at length, and operating complicated household equipment with their righthand bound loosely behind their back.

The application is due to be considered today, Thursday, April 1.

Millwall Lionesses goalkeeper Kelly Webster has helped set up a food bank on the Rennie Estate in Bermondsey.

The Lions Food Hub, which the Lionesses launched in association with Millwall Supporters Trust, is taking food and financial donations and has been open since January.

The Food Hub runs out of the Rennie and Manor Tenants Hall on Galleywall Road and is open for collections on Tuesday and Friday.

"People can book timeslots," Webster told the News. "We don’t want queues up the road, we want it to feel like

you’ve still got your dignity.

"You go in the front door, you get your stuff and you go out the backdoor. We don’t want it to feel like a soup kitchen which I don’t think is right.

"Some people have gone on furlough, they were using 100% of their wage for their bills and everything else. Now they haven’t got that so they obviously need a bit more help."

Millwall midfielder Ben Thompson has visited the centre and made a donation, as well as Millwall fans and other local residents.

The Lions Food Hub is building on

the work of local people who have run a food and support network through the tenants' hall that supported about 530 people through the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Food Hub still needs help and is taking donations of food, toiletries and financial help for buying additional supplies.

help get burgess park learning centre set up A community garden in Burgess Park wants to raise £20,000 to build a learning centre for local people.

Glengall Wharf Garden, on the far east side of the park in North Peckham, has already raised more than £19,500, including a £10,000 grant from the Mayor of London.

More than £9,000 will go on a used shipping container that will help local groups run workshops even in bad weather, while four solar panels have been donated. The group will also buy an off-grid solar kit.

The group will also use donations to create a rainwater harvesting system, living wall and green roof, build two new raised beds, run a garden stall to sell food and plants,

and put in an outdoor cob oven.

Volunteers added that the garden is an important community asset because it provides a good space for people from the diverse local area to spend time together, regardless of their background. Some food from the garden goes to Southwark Food Bank and Peckham Pantry.

“Following the isolation of caused by the pandemic, we wanted to engage and uplift the community,” community volunteer Jack Narbed said. “Sharing skills and empowering others is at the heart of what we do and these funds will enable us to reach more people in new, enriching ways.”

Bermondsey dad puts lockdown in rhyme

A Bermondsey father-of-two has written a book for young children that explains the idea of a coronavirus lockdown through rhyme.

Ricardo Bertora, who wrote Oh No, Not Another Lockdown in the third quarantine period, is donating £1 from every copy of the book sold to the NHS. Bertora, who has eight-yearold twins, said: "For years I took great pleasure in reading bedtime stories to them during the night time routine. I found not only did the kids love the books, but I did as well, and that inspired me to create

my bedtime stories for young kids!

"I particularly liked the rhyming nature of some books and sometimes one would give you as a parent a laugh out loud moment," Bertora added. "One of my goals was to create a rhyming story for kids which used humour to bring that same laugh out loud moment to the reader."

A previous SE24 project

help create community garden in surrey quays A community group in Surrey Quays is fundraising to put in a garden on a derelict strip of land.

The Garden at Lower Road Community Association wants just over £23,000 to clear the area, put in a fence, plant trees, build a shed and create a pond, among other plans.

The Garden SE8 will be on a space that has lain unused for a long time on Lower Road, just north of Croft Street, in front of a private residential development.

Volunteers have already begun clearing the area of brambles and said they also collected about 100kg of rubbish. The next stage will be to prepare the soil, fence off the area and begin planting.

Volunteers hope to have the garden ready for summer this year, after getting permission from the owners

of the land in November 2020.

Anyone can volunteer or become a member of the garden.

“Our vision is to create a garden dedicated to growing vegetables and plants, for the wellbeing of our local community,” the group said on its website. It will be designed to be accessible for the youngest and eldest of our communities. Children of all ages will be specially welcome.

“The garden will be gated and accessible to members and volunteers during agreed times and open sessions, to be held on an agreed schedule such as Sunday mornings.

Everyone is welcome to become a member or volunteer of the garden.”

Local school raises record breaking £7,000 A school in East Dulwich has raised more than £7,700 for a south London hospice.

St Anthony's Catholic School on Etherow Street raised the money for St Christopher's Hospice in Sydenham and Orpington through its annual Lent charity appeal.

Children, parents and staff have walked, run, scooted and cycled over 40 days to help bring in a record amount of donations for the school.

“We know that so many charities have suffered due to the impact of the pandemic on their fundraising and we decided to support a charity that is close to home," headteacher Joanne Hawthorne said. "Our appeal has clearly touched the hearts of many.”

Sue Orlandi, a member of the school staff, who has managed to walk over 230 miles since the challenge began and King in Year 2 who said: “I wanted to raise money for St Christopher’s Hospice because

my grandma, ba Ngoai died there when my mum was little. I want the hospice to be able to have more beds and also decorations for the people who are staying there to look at to make them happy.”

Hal Davidson, a community fundraiser at St Christopher’s Hospice added: “We are absolutely blown away by the dedication and enthusiasm shown by all the children and staff at St Anthony’s Catholic School.

To have raised over £7,000 though their Lent fundraising appeal for St Christopher’s is amazing, and we are extremely grateful and touched by their effort. Every penny raised will go towards supporting local people, and we want to say a huge thank you to everyone involved.”

schools got energy Three renewable energy projects for schools, run by a group based in Southwark and Lambeth, have been given more than £70,000 by the mayor of London.

SE24's funding will help the community group install LED lighting at the Charles Dickens primary school in Borough and the Charter School North Dulwich. SE24 has also got a grant for a feasibility study for

installing solar panels at the North Dulwich school.

The group was given £44,900 for the LED lighting at the Charter School North Dulwich, which it said will save the school about 24 tonnes of carbon each year. The solar panels, whose feasibility study got £14,250, could cut another 22 tonnes, SE24 added.

The community group was awarded a further £11,400 for the LED lighting at Charles Dickens, which the group

said will give savings of nearly six tonnes of carbon each year.

Chair Alan Jones said SE24 was "delighted" with the new funding.

"These projects will not only reduce these buildings climate change impact - but also help contribute significant energy bill savings to the schools."

The money comes from the Mayor's London Community Energy Fund, which gave a total of £539,000 in grants to 38 new projects this month.

A parent at Archbishop Tenison’s School in Kennington who has been given boxes said: “The breakfast boxes have been extremely helpful to my family. The impact of the Lockdown has been devastating, as we were unable to work.

"I have two teenage children in the house, and we were unsure where the next meal was coming from. The thought of them going to bed hungry or their food not being nutritious enough was very scary. However, once we started receiving the boxes, it was a blessing and a comfort.”

James Robinson, the headteacher of Camelot school in Peckham, has been delivering the breakfast boxes with his fellow teachers.

He said that he was climbing so many flights of stairs that he was walking 30,000 steps before work.

“It’s been a privilege for me to

get involved and a lifeline for our families,"he said. "We are one of the most deprived schools in Southwark and our families were stunned by the quality of the ingredients and fresh fruit.”

Robinson added that he was planning to run the 2021 marathon to raise money for a local food bank.

CEO and Founder of School Food Matters, Stephanie Slater, said: “Children in Britain deserve to have enough nutritious food to ensure they are healthy and able to thrive.

The pandemic has highlighted the urgent need to review school food policy and funding. We must use this moment as an opportunity for change.

"We support the National Food Strategy’s call on the government to expand entitlement to free school meals, so that every child receives the food they need to thrive.”

one million breakfasts have been given out in southwark & Lambeth

A food charity is celebrating its millionth breakfast delivered to children in Southwark and Lambeth whose families have struggled amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

School Food Matters switched to delivering breakfast to kids during the first lockdown in May, away from its usual role of educating people on the importance of eating healthily.

The new programme, called Breakfast Boxes, has continued ever since, including through school closures and school holidays, with support from Impact on Urban Health, part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity, the Food Power for Generation Covid scheme and public donations.

Each breakfast box is filled with two weeks’ worth of breakfasts - including fresh fruit, oats, rice, wholemeal bread, baked beans,

Trees can support us - if we care for them

T

he trees have put on their spring finery, with bursts of pink cherry blossom and magnolias sporting fat, waxy buds or delicate, papercut petals. A few Southwark streets – Winterbrook Road, Melbourne Grove, Trothy Road – have become avenues of cloud-like Yoshino cherry blossom, the tree most celebrated in Japan, for two special weeks.

In a talk for ‘Better Streets for Southwark’ last week, Paul Wood, the author of London Street Trees, showed how the TreeTalk website www.treetalk.co.uk allows you to identify local trees, find out more about particular species, and create a walk route.

After years of failing to replace street trees (with a shocking loss of more than 2,000 trees in the last decade), Southwark Council has recognised the need to take better care of its trees. The promise to plant 10,000 new trees is a start, though only a quarter of these will be street trees. But it remains a scandal that one third of Southwark’s trees die in the first few years, often because they are not watered by contractors who have moved on to other jobs.

In Lewisham, Street Trees for Living supports volunteer street reps to look after trees and suggest new locations. The death rate for newly planted trees in Lewisham has fallen to 5%. Paul sees potential for TreeTalk to link people who want to adopt

local trees and keep an eye on them, building on the work of existing groups.

We talked about the joys of edible streets, such as the Surrey Canal path, where fruit and nut trees grow for considerate foraging, and the problem of healthy trees being felled at the whim of insurance companies. The burden of proof now falls on councils to show that a tree is not causing subsidence. We need a change in the law to make insurers pay compensation for the benefits a tree brings – cleaning the air, providing shade in summer and shelter for wildlife – to discourage needless felling.

The 1st of April is the birthday of Wangarĩ Maathai, founder of the Green Belt Movement in Kenya which has planted over 51 million trees and trained more than 30,000 women in forestry and sustainable agriculture. Their work demonstrates how trees can support us – if we care for them.

It remains a scandal that one third of Southwark’s trees die in the first few years, often because they are not watered by contractors who have moved on to other jobs.

Crossbones saved - a tribute to our poorer ancestors I have attended many vigils at Crossbones over the last 25 years. They have been moving evocative experiences where John Stow has illuminated the history of the area. The vigils bring a reverance to the terrible suffering of past Southwark and attaches that suffering to our experience today, the suffering still endured today through poverty, prostitution and greed. Trams are the best form of public transport

T

rams are an obvious solution to congestion in Southwark. They are set at street level, making them fully accessible to wheelchair users and people pushing prams or hauling baggage. They follow road routes, so are more likely to be used by people who would otherwise drive. They have far more capacity than buses, are greener, and are quiet - meaning less noise as well as less congestion for people living on main roads.

Building a tram line is comparatively less disruptive and less carbon intensive than building a railway or an underground line, meaning environmental activists see them as a step toward meeting climate targets. Construction can also be done within a matter of years rather than decades. If the Bakerloo line is completed it is likely to be a hundred years after it was first seriously considered in the 1940s. The success of other tram projects across the country should show Southwark’s Labour councillors that this is not only something seriously to consider - but to prioritise. What other mode of transport can get such popular support?

‘Golden goodbyes’ need to go!

S

outhwark Council’s new leader Kieron Williams has reiterated what ex-leader Peter John claimed about the so-called ‘golden goodbye’ payments. Without them, and the measure of financial security they bring in the event of stepping down from a role or losing it unexpectedly, the council would struggle to attract people from a wide variety of backgrounds into public office. This may be true - yet in what other job would someone be given a golden goodbye for jumping - or being pushed?

This means ex-housing cabinet member Leo Pollak could be taking home £5,000 - though the council has refused to discuss whether or not the monitoring officer’s investigation, currently ongoing, into his resignation could have any bearing on the payment.

Given the very real struggles of the thousands on the housing waiting list, workers in the gig economy, those with zero hours contracts and two weeks’ notice, and the huge number of people signing onto Universal Credit and dependent on food banks, it is doubtful many of our readers will continue to see golden goodbyes as anything other than a complete scandal.

‘Rotherhithe Navvies: Exiles of Erin’, three short films set in the early 1800s that show the migration of Irish people escaping from hardship in their homeland as they sought a better life in London, writes Michael Holland.

Seamus left his wife Mary at home while he set off to earn money in the ‘biggest city in the world’.

As he succinctly puts it: ‘I swapped the smell of the dung in the farmyard for the smell of the excrement of all humanity.’ As he walks along the Rotherhithe foreshore Seamus tells of dead horses floating by in the Thames - The Great Sewer - ‘And we drank from it!’

With so much building work going on in the capital there was work aplenty for the hardworking man, even though the Irish were paid about four shillings a week, much less than the English workers. And the underhand racism amongst dockworkers and their ‘closed shop’ system whereby you could only get work in the dock if you knew someone in there, meant the Irish were kept out of working in the Surrey Docks after they had sweated and toiled to build them.

Seamus, however, finds work digging out the Thames Tunnel, and talks passionately about the genius of Brunel - ‘The Frenchman who escaped the revolution’.

Jump forward twenty years and Pippa is about to launch her own gallery, but I wanted to know more about the woman who now represents artists on several continents: ‘I had been doing some local theatre set designing, and making and selling pottery, and doing some writing for a parenting magazine, and was looking for a job in the arts, so when an artist friend asked me to represent her it just seemed to encapsulate all the things I wanted to do.’ Which is when Ms Graber set out on her life plan. ’I got some funding and the whole thing took on a life of its own,’ she recalls, ‘and after a year I ended up with a gallery space in a large restaurant in East Dulwich, so pretty much invented my own job’ After three years at East Dulwich, Pippa began working from her Honor Oak Park home, where she held exhibitions and participated in the global art fair schedule, mainly with the Affordable Art Fair. From the beginning it sounded like an incredible journey towards opening her own space. I was curious about the highlights, and she had highlights aplenty.

‘The best thing about this career is I get to do my favourite things, which are meeting new people and being around art. It provides an interesting and diverse social life and experience. I also run an intern programme and I am thrilled that my

past interns have gone on to do amazing things in the art world… I can not think of one specific highlight from the past but opening the new gallery is definitely the apex of my career - I have a new intern starting at the gallery in June.’

Pippa has also veered off the road to embrace something else that she loves: ‘I am involved heavily in The Maverick Festival in Suffolk which is an Americana music festival; I work with artists who are also musicians in the genre and exhibit their work at the festival.’ I could see her mind drift off to the openness of the countryside with Bluegrass playing on the wind. Then she was back. ‘I suppose the highlight of my work is that you never know what will pop up next.’

What is it that you love about your work?

‘Mainly it is the combination of the art and the people I work with. I am really specific and I have to like the work and the artist. I have artists I have been working with for a long time from London and New York and new ones now from Suffolk where I live part-time.’ I could tell there was more. ‘The travel, especially to Hong Kong, which I loved, has been a real bonus… I prefer a working holiday because I love my job.’

When did you decide to open up a gallery?

‘I have always had spaces that I have shown from, including my house in Honor Oak Park, but four years ago I decided to sell the house and open a gallery that ideally would also be my home. This is the fruition of that.’

But any rollercoaster ride has its downs to follow the ups. ‘I think a low point has been the last two years when I was building the gallery. It is a hugely stressful thing to do and my advice to anyone thinking of doing a new build is, don’t if

Seamus has plans. ‘Bring your needle and thread,’ he tells her. ‘We’ll make our fortune.’

The third of the trilogy tells the tale of digging the tunnel, nine inches at a time with only candlelight to help those navvies who were doing the digging; a candle that could explode and burn the worker if he hit gas.

And there were floods to contend with when the Thames breached the works. Eventually, with men dying and the tunnelling halted, Brunel’s patrons got cold feet, and funds dried up. For seven years no work

was carried out and even when the Thames Tunnel was finally completed it had no roadway for horsedrawn traffic, and pedestrians were not keen on the many stairs to get up and down, so the tunnel was sold to the East London Railway and tube trains still run through it today.

It is, though, and always will be, the first tunnel under a navigable river anywhere in the world, and that is what makes it stand out as a feat of engineering today.

you don’t have to! It was important to me to be back in Honor Oak if possible, and, fortunately, this property came up, but it has been a long and twisted road to this point.’

So, it has been difficult to get open.

‘Difficult doesn’t even start to express it, more like “horrendous nightmare of stress and worry!” But that is now fading away as one of those “never again” experiences of life and it is starting to feel like a reality that will be worth the effort.’

And Covid?

‘While art did sell during the lockdown, there were no art fairs and I had no base to sell from except for my website.

I missed the art fairs and not seeing my other gallery friends, and it forced me to embrace social media on a higher level… I have a base now but due to Covid we will not be having the big opening party that I was hoping for. The opening will be a soft one and I just plan on being open for more hours to begin with… The gallery is Contemporary, and we specialise in abstract and photo-realistic still-life but we are not limited to it. Plus, we offer bespoke framing.’

For the opening, Pippa is putting up the work of Kate Felton-Hall, Darren LyndeMann, and Lisa Henshall. She will be following this up with a show of still life works from the UK and Spain.

written by Colin Uttley and Richard Hodder, but while it deals with very harsh times in our local history, it comes across as a warm and rather twee piece.

Seamus seemingly has no regrets about how he and his fellow countrymen were treated here. He makes the flooding and the hard work in an extreme and dangerous environment sound like a nice way to earn a living, as if the opportunity of working for the Brunels made up for everything that was wrong with society in those days of very rich and very poor.

The music, too, written and performed by Emily Rose Laurence puts you at ease and at one with the world. For a moment as I listened and allowed myself to get drawn in, I craved for those good old days of - Of what? Poor pay, poor conditions and a lifetime of us and them.

This new commission is to celebrate the contribution of the Irish community to the creation of the Thames Tunnel, and it does that, but it does that by smoothing over the brutal reality of their lives.

Greener Bermondsey has published the Ada Tulip Walk, which maps out the tulips planted in schools, estates, community gardens and churchyards across Bermondsey and Rotherhithe.

The Ada in question is Ada Salter, Labour mayor of the metropolitan borough of Bermondsey from 1922 and founder of the Beautification Committee in 1920. Life in Bermondsey was tough for many people at the time, who often lived close together in slumlike conditions.

Ada, who moved to the area with her husband Alfred, a brilliant doctor, around the turn of the 20th century, was a socialist and a tireless campaigner for the rights of working people. She believed that improving the environment was key to improving local people’s health and quality of life.

Her Beautification Committee, whose motto was “fresh air and fun”, aimed to transform any available space into a garden of some kind, filled with trees and plants. Anyone who wanted plants and compost could have them for free, according to social housing historian John Boughton.

The committee ended up planting 9,000 trees and 60,000 plants, according to Hannah Awcock in her blog Turbulent Londoners. About 70 miles of streets were lined with trees, out of 80 miles in the borough, according to Boughton.

One of Ada’s preferred trees was the Tree of Heaven, which can thrive amid polluted conditions more readily than other species. There were some 383 in the borough by the late 1920s. Although the lifespan of the Tree of Heaven is about 70-100 years, some of the original trees still survive.

Some people balked at the scale of the committee’s ambition, but Ada’s retort was that much of the work was being done by local people who were out of work. As well as being a beautification scheme, it was a public infrastructure programme that brought employment to the area.

Some of the more ambitious plans did not come to anything, like a winter garden that Boughton said was slated

to encourage “healthful exercise and bodily development”.

But the scheme was a huge success overall: the Observer commented in 1931 that “outside the Royal Parks it would be difficult to find anywhere such masses of colour”, according to Bob Gilbert in his book Ghost Trees: Nature and People in a London Parish.

More than 2,000 Bermondsey and Rotherhithe residents planted over 10,000 tulip bulbs in memory of Ada in autumn 2020, as part of the nonpartisan Greener Bermondsey group.

The Mayor of Southwark also took part in the planting at the Bricklayers Arms and the Dickens Estate in west Bermondsey.

“For us at Greener Bermondsey, the best part of the project was how ready so many others were to join it, people we have never met before the lockdown.

“In the end, over 2000 people volunteered to plant bulbs. I think that’s the real tribute to Ada,” said Anna Bayraktar, who was the Project Lead for Project #ADA100.

“There is something about Ada Salter that speaks to everyone. She knew ‘green’ was good for people. And when she was told ‘no’, she found a way to make it happen anyway.”

Bermondsey ward councillor Humaira Ali, said last year: “In meetings over lockdown, residents cited housing, crime and the climate emergency as their top three topics. “[Bermondsey ward councillors] Damian, William and I came together with some brilliant people to found Greener Bermondsey, a non political group with an open invitation to all residents to help lower the carbon footprint of Bermondsey.

“Let’s get Bermondsey on the map in the 21st century for yet another great reason.”

Greener Bermondsey hopes to take on more projects in the future to make the area a cleaner place to live. Ultimately it aims to make Bermondsey one of the lowest-carbon areas in the country.

Ada died in 1942 after she and Alfred were bombed out of their home earlier that year in the Second World War. Her legacy remains visible in the Ada Salter Garden in Southwark Park and the memorial to her and Alfred by the Angel pub in Rotherhithe, as well as the many tree-lined streets and green spaces of Bermondsey.

Redemption for ‘The Big Cheese’ Ted Cheeseman banishes ‘demons’ – but Chris Kongo loses for first time

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk TED CHEESEMAN said he “got rid of his demons” after he dramatically recaptured the British superwelterweight title by knocking out James Metcalf in the eleventh round of a brutal encounter in Gibraltar last weekend.

Cheeseman, 25, is in recovery from a gambling addiction – he told BBC Sport last year he “wouldn’t like to put a number on the amount I’ve lost” - and placed his last bet on April 6, 2019.

Cheeseman started fiercely against Metcalf and a barrage in the fourth round looked like it would end the fight against the unbeaten Liverpudlian.

But he had to wait until the closing seconds of the eleventh as another ferocious attack ended with a left hand that finally took out his opponent.

Chris Kongo lost for the first time in his professional career as Portsmouth’s Michael McKinson claimed a unanimous decision with scores of 97-93, 96-94 and 95-94 in their WBO Global welterweight clash.

The Bermondsey pair were fighting on the undercard of Dillian Whyte-Alexander Povetkin 2 as the Brixton man gained revenge in their heavyweight bout with a fourth-round knockout.

Cheeseman looked like he would win it early with a big right hand in the fourth round leaving Metcalf reeling.

But Metcalf, 32, hit back and rocked Cheeseman in the seventh.

It was a gruelling contest until Cheeseman finally ended it as his opponent lost for the first time in 23

fights.

Kongo, meanwhile, was under pressure from the start against McKinson. Kongo was knocked down in the first round and was always behind on the scorecards.

Unbeaten McKinson landed more accurate punches in the last round to seal the decision.

Cheeseman is enjoying his victory as trainers Tony and Charlie Sims decide what’s next.

“Two years on April 6 I’m bet-free.

Road to recovery. I’ve improved and improved, that’s the best I’ve boxed as a pro,” Cheeseman said.

“All I can keep doing is getting better and better. I’m still only a young man at 25.

“I fought there, I toughed it out, I bullied him. Listen, I beat Kieron Conway, I beat Scott Fitzgerald, I beat Sam Eggington (Cheeseman drew and lost the first two fights but felt he should have got the decisions) – I’m the best on the British scene.

“Everyone said Ted’s had too many hard fights, it’s taken the mileage out of him. I looked fresher than ever tonight, I looked good. When I was going into that last round I still felt good, I could have done fifteen rounds.

“Me and Tony have worked really hard, we’ve kept improving. When I fought Kieron Conway I had just come out of rehab but I kept improving. Scott Fitzgerald, improving.

“What I did was I fought one fight, boxed the other. Now you see, I’m mixing it. I’m using my experience, boxing when I need to, fighting when I need to.

“But you know what, I’ve got a young family at home, I’ve been in a training camp for a long time. I want to go home and spend some time with my family and let Tony and Charlie sort out what they want to do next.

“I’m British champion again. I should never have lost it. I should have been winning a belt higher this time.

“But life goes on and the story carries on.

“I’ve got rid of all my demons, it was a long time recovering. I feel the best I’ve felt my whole career.

“I’m still probably the youngest at the domestic level but with the best resume as well. I’ve taken tough fight after tough fight. I ain’t had no easy fight for the last two or three years, maybe even longer.

“I’m just feeling better and better and I’m improving all the time.”

Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn added: “It’s an amazing story. You could have put that fight in black and white, it could have been in the ‘20s, ‘30s, ‘40s – it was a throwback fight.

“He’s a throwback fighter, it’s amazing to think he’s only 25. He works so hard and I’m so pleased for Tony Sims and

“And he’s right, he probably should have beaten Kieron Caonway, the Scott Fitzgerald fight he believed he won.

Dulwich Hamlet stunned as National League hands down heavy penalties Ollie Jarman

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET were left stunned after the National League handed down an £8,000 fine and a suspended eight-point deduction for failing to fulfil fixtures last season.

Eighteen clubs across the fifth and six tiers of English football were given penalties, with National League’s Dover Athletic – who refused to play after January 30 – hit with a whopping £40,000 fine and twelvepoint deduction from next season.

Clubs can appeal the punishments for breaching Rule 8.39 or see fines - £2,000 per match missed – reduced by 30 per cent if they accept the charges.

Clubs in National League, Hamlet’s National League South and National League North received bailout money earlier in the season, but some then decided not to play fixtures when no more funding was available. Dover played just fifteen games this season before their results were expunged as their campaign was officially confirmed over.

The 2020-21 National Leagues North and South were declared null and void in February after combined results of votes by clubs in both divisions.

Hamlet chairman Ben Clasper told the News in February that the board were not prepared to risk the longterm future of the 128-year-old club by building up debt incurring costs playing fixtures with no gate income.

Clasper also said the Hamlet were not going to put players and staff into situations in which they could potentially contract Covid-19. Dulwich manager Gavin Rose told the News that he fully backed the board and was involved in the decision-making.

A National League statement read: “Given the extremely unusual circumstances that have affected football at all levels and the financial pressures the absence of spectators has brought to bear on clubs, the panel (an independent panel commissioned by the National League) expressed its

“However, the panel believes it must also take regard of the fact that the majority of clubs continued to fulfil fixtures and incur much costs until the League ended on February 19.

“Per breach, each club received a £2,000 fine and suspended two-point deduction for the 2021-22 playing season. A 30 per cent reduction was made to the fine for those accepting the charge ahead of the hearing.”

funding, which wasn’t allocated based on average gate receipts, as Dulwich had requested.

It was being reported this week that clubs had been asked if they would support an EGM to debate a resolution of no confidence in the National League’s chairman and board.

Surrey coach excited ahead of season’s start

By Sport Reporter sport@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY HEAD coach Vikram Solanki has praised his players for their application over winter as they gear up for the 2021 season.

Surrey begin their campaign in less than two weeks with the LV= County Championship.

“For all of the tough periods over the last year, for all of the wins we had in 2020, it very much makes me realise how fortunate I am to be involved with this group of players,” Solanki said.

“They’ve worked extremely hard and we’ll continue to work hard throughout the season to try and get the best out of them.

“It’s that we’ve been able to practise and the boys have been able to play cricket. A lot of the players made the point during the internal match that the fact they’ve been able to play is great while in comparison to other parts of society they have been restricted. That in itself has been brilliant for the lads.

“From a cricket point of view, we’ve had a proper build-up to the season. Hopefully these games coming up against Sussex and Middlesex will allow a proper build-up to a full season.”

Surrey reached the Vitality Blast final in 2020 after a difficult start in a season disrupted by Covid-19 and the restrictions.

“We were pleased with how we managed to turn things around,” Solanki added.

“There’s no getting away from the fact that we were certainly weren’t as good as we should have been in our Bob Willis Trophy campaign. Our T20 campaign was an entirely different animal altogether.

“It was exciting to see some young fellas stick their hand up when given the opportunity. We played well and to a plan that helped us to a good run – it was just a shame we fell at the last hurdle.”

The 2021 season sees eight weeks of LV= County Championship action before the Vitality Blast starts. The final two matches in the first stage of the red-ball competition come in the middle of that T20 group stage.

Solanki said: “It’s as close to blocking as we’ve got and it does allow you to prepare well. It also allows us to think of player availability because that obviously impacts us quite a bit with our contingent of England players.

“When the Test boys are away, we have some of the white-ball boys around and vice versa. It allows for better planning as far as that is concerned. It’s all planned in our minds so if we can keep everybody fit it makes for an exciting start to the season.”

London Sport chief welcomes re-opening – and encourages re-engagement after months of inactivity

Facilities across the capital have been closed for months as lockdowns have cut right across the physical activity and sport sector.

Community sport bodies in all parts of the capital have faced serious and

significant challenges to their long-term prosperity and Londoners’ physical activity levels have declined.

The likes of Southwark Aquatic Swimming Centre – whose chairman told the News last week they had lost members due to no training being allowed – have reopened.

Pre-existing inequalities in activity levels have been exacerbated by the pandemic with people with disabilities and Londoners from ethnically diverse communities and from lower socio-economic backgrounds significantly less likely to be active.

“This is a first and significant step towards

opening up,” Moore said. “The fact these facilities are the first to open – ahead of shops and pubs – rightfully demonstrates the importance that sport and physical activity plays in people’s lives.

“London Sport has worked tirelessly to support organisations through the pandemic and has seen some incredible work in London’s communities who have really come together to get through a long and difficult winter.

“We hope that the vaccine rollout, and good weather, will create a sense of optimism and encourage many people back to sport and physical activity.

“That said, we’re fully aware that some people will not see the vaccine as a silver bullet and we’ll be working with organisations across London to make the transition from at-home activity to utilising London’s fantastic parks and outdoor spaces as smooth as possible.”

To date, London Sport has distributed almost £200,000 of Sport England’s Tackling Inequalities Funding to a wide range of organisations to address the challenges faced by communities of either becoming or staying active.

Nearly £70,000 of Sport England Satellite Club funding was distributed by London

Sport at the end of 2020 to support children and young people to be more active and socially connected with delivery by 27 organisations starting online from January.

London Sport has also worked with Our Parks to develop Couch to Fitness to reach ethnically diverse communities most affected by lockdown restrictions.

With restrictions lifting, parents and guardians are being urged to help their children follow the Chief Medical Officer’s guidance of at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, and adults to aim for at least 150 minutes a week.

Defender Hutch one of just five ever-presents in the league this season EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett has paid tribute to the durability and consistency of Millwall vice-captain Shaun Hutchinson this season.

Lions centre-back Hutchinson is one of just five Championship players – including Millwall goalkeeper Bart Bialkowski – to play every minute of league football this campaign.

In fact, only two outfield players have managed it – 3420 minutes not including added-time – Hutchinson and Norwich defender Max Aarons.

Hutchinson has played 179 times for Millwall since joining on a free transfer from Fulham in the summer of 2016 and signed a new long-term deal last year.

He has scored twice this year, in the 2-0 victory at Boreham Wood in the third round of the FA Cup and the only goal at Derby when he powered home Jed Wallace’s corner.

Hutchinson’s ever-present record this season is all the more remarkable given the frequency of mid-week games and the number of times he has thrown himself in harm’s way to help the side to fifteen clean sheets in the league.

Rowett is full of admiration for the former Motherwell defender.

“He’s been brilliant. I’ve said it before, I

think he’s probably been, out of everybody, our most consistent performer,” Rowett said.

“Not just in terms of appearances – because we’ve got a few who have played lots and lots of games – but just in terms of every game you more or less know what you’re going to get from Hutchy.

“To maintain that performance level over a long period of time in a lot of games is commendable.

“He’s been excellent for us this season.”

At the other end of the experience scale, Billy Mitchell, who has played nineteen times for Millwall, was also picked out by Rowett.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BILLY MITCHELL is looking forward to getting a full pre-season under his belt to come back “firing on all cylinders” in 2021-22 – but first he wants to pack in as much experience as possible in this campaign.

Despite making his debut in 2019, Mitchell has started just four league games for Millwall, with two hamstring injuries this season keeping him out until February.

But he was man of the match in the Lions’ 1-0 win over Middlesbrough before the international break and is set

to retain his place in the team against Rotherham this Friday.

Mitchell, who turns 20 this month, tore his hamstring last pre-season after the squad had just two weeks off following the delayed 2019-20 campaign.

“I was excited to come back into preseason last summer but then things went a little bit wrong,” he said.

“This pre-season it will be nice, hopefully coming off the back of a good finish to the season potentially learning a few things.

“It will be good to have a proper rest and then come back firing on all cylinders for the new season. I know I said it at the beginning of last season but hopefully

before the next one I’ll have a little bit of experience under my belt and make a proper impact.”

Mitchell has developed a good partnership with Ryan Woods, and is enjoying playing alongside his teammate.

Mitchell said: “It’s been great. Woodsy is vastly experienced at this level and he’s been a help for me. It’s the first time I’m back in the team for a while so undoubtedly there are going to be a few nerves, but he’s been really good to settle me down.

“I think we complement each other quite well. People have seen recently the quality he has on the ball, he can

slightly freer role [against Middlesbrough] when he could step in and we could release him into more forward areas, which we saw from time to time.

“He’s a good player but you have to remember he’s been out for a long time this season. For him to come back and be able to play to that level, if you saw him in pre-season he looked like he was really going to put his stamp on the team this year.

“I’m sure this backend of the season will really help him to kick on again next year.

“He’s an exciting prospect and I’ve said it before, it’s whether he can produce that little bit of extra quality in the Championship, because he’s got all the other attributes.”

Full steam ahead as Millwall plan for full Den in August All restrictions could be lifted by June 21 as vaccine success continues

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL CHIEF executive Steve Kavanagh insists the club want to be “transparent” as season tickets went on sale this week giving fans numerous financial options for 2021-22.

Supporters who buy in the first window of three will save money, but Kavanagh knows there is still uncertainty around jobs and the furlough scheme.

As of Tuesday, more than 30 million people in the UK had received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, with cases, hospitalisations and deaths continuing to fall. Daily new cases dipped below 4,000 this week after a peak this year of almost 70,000 in early January.

Boris Johnson said in February the aim is for all restrictions to be lifted by June 21, if certain conditions are met, including the vaccine rollout.

Millwall are making plans for a return at full capacity at The Den next season.

“I think it’s really important that that transparency is there, we’re trying to show people what’s happening, show the benefits,” Kavanagh said.

“I understand some people now might have uncertainty in their jobs, be unclear on when furlough unwinds, we get all that.

“If you can do it now, we want to reward you because there is an element of risk in it – there is an element of risk in everything in the current climate.

“As we move down the road, if you want a bit more time, we get that, but

August 2019. It will have been two years since fans were at The Den in the opening month of the season you can see what it means to you in terms of the pricing.

“We’re trying to be fair and reasonable and fair to where the economy is, to where people are and where we are as a club.

“We’re all suffering, to an extent.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk KENNETH ZOHORE and Maikel Kieftenbeld were back in fullcontact training this week as they target returns from injury after the international break.

Striker Zohore has been out since Millwall’s 2-1 win at Reading on February 13, while midfielder Kieftenbeld hasn’t played since going off at half-time in the 4-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday on February 6.

Connor Mahoney, who has been out since November, also trained and is slightly further along as he is set to be available to face Rotherham United on Friday.

Lions boss Gary Rowett also hopes to have midfielder Ryan Leonard back early next month.

Murray Wallace, who missed two months earlier this year, hasn’t been able to travel to see family members.

But he realises the players are fortunate to be able to train when so many haven’t been allowed use gyms or have lost jobs and businesses.

“I haven’t been able to travel back at all but everyone’s in the same boat, aren’t they, everyone’s missing family,” Wallace said. “My partner’s family are all in Manchester and she hasn’t been able to see them for a while. Most of my family are in Scotland so it’s been tough.

“But when I look at it I’m actually fortunate football has continued and we’re not just stuck inside, furloughed, we’ve got jobs to go to.

“That’s been brilliant, you’re missing family and friends but at least you’ve got that focus of football to make it a bit easier.”

“Membership is fantastic value. If you can’t afford a season ticket and we do get some people financially can’t – obviously for us that’s the best way – but if you can’t then a membership brings you that engagement and real value in terms of savings on your match-day tickets.

“Getting that out there now makes that clear so that people have all the options, all the ideas and visibility of ways of being engaged with Millwall again and back to normality.

“Boris has announced June 21, all restrictions go. We do understand there are contingencies to that. ‘New variant’ is another phrase we’ve all learned.

“Those aspects sit there, they exist.

But hopefully, with everything we can see with the data and the stats and if they carry on as they are, then by the time we get to next season normality returns.

“If it doesn’t, don’t forget, as we did this year, those that buy early will be rewarded by buying early: First in, first served. If there are any restrictions – and I really don’t think there will be – then those people that buy early will be the ones we look after first. Because we have to.

“But we want to open the doors up for everyone in a variety of financial aspects and ranges to be able to engage with the club and really get behind Millwall Football Club.”

Improvised combination are doing the business in 2021

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL TRADITIONALLY have a little and large combination up front – but it’s little and little who are doing the business in 2021.

That might be slightly harsh on Jed Wallace who is not far off 6ft tall, but he’s hardly a bruiser in the Steve Morison/ Matt Smith mould.

Wallace’s current strike partner is Mason Bennett and the pair have developed an excellent understanding, with arguably their best performances as a front duo coming in the 1-0 win over Middlesbrough before the international break.

Bennett is usually the furthest forward but when he drops deep Wallace is on the move to stretch the opponents’ defence.

Against Boro, Bennett put Wallace in with a sumptuous first-time ball and only Marcus Bettinelli’s save denied the latter a ninth goal of the season.

For the goal, Wallace drifted to the left to take a pass from Billy Mitchell before beating Jonny Howson and drilling in a low cross that Grant Hall couldn’t help putting in his own net. The Boro defender was undoubtedly spooked by Bennett who was behind him and ready to finish.

“Neither of them are natural strikers but they’ve been absolutely excellent,” Mitchell said. “They’ve got bundles of pace, probably more than your average Championship player.

“Particularly as a midfielder if you’re under pressure you know you can always swing one around the corner and Jed or Mason are going to get on the end of it.

“They’ve both been linking up well together and scoring some goals, that’s always good for the team. Long may that continue.

“Naturally if you have Jon Dadi [Bodvarsson] or Smudge on the pitch you might look to go a bit more direct

because that plays to their strengths.

“Jed and Mason both like to come a little deeper to get the ball to their feet and link the play. What we’ve worked quite hard on is making sure one of them is in there to link the play while the other one goes in behind.

“That’s something they’ve done really well. The first half at QPR was obviously quite exciting. Although we didn’t have a lot of the ball at Derby they were

probably two of our best players.

“And against Boro, Mason Bennett put a first-time pass around the corner for Jed and he nearly scored from it. They’ve clearly got a good understanding of what each other want to do.”

Meanwhile, the Lions could be boosted by the return of Connor Mahoney against Rotherham, but Ryan Leonard and Kenneth Zohore are still out.

Bill Chadwick and Jack Earing scored to put the hosts 2-0 ahead after 61 minutes.

But Lions striker Olaofe netted his second goal in two games and sixth this year to halve the deficit with fifteen minutes left.

And five minutes from time, former Millwall forward Craig Eastmond made it 2-2 to stretch Sutton’s

unbeaten National League run to twelve games.

The south London side – who are chasing a place in the Football League for the first time – are four points clear of Hartlepool with three games in hand.

Sutton have played the same number of games as third-place Torquay but are ten points clear of the Gulls.

Sutton travel to twelfth-place Boreham Wood this Friday.

Meanwhile, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson had a tough start to World Cup 2022 qualifying as Iceland lost 3-0 away to Germany and 2-0 in Armenia.

Millwall offer incentive as season tickets go on sale

Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL CEO Steve Kavanagh believes “the whole country feels more positive” as he explained the decision to make 2021-22 season tickets available to buy this week.

There are three windows in which fans can buy tickets for next season, with prices varying in each.

Kavanagh admitted “we need money” as supporters are being incentivised to buy in this window – which runs until May 17 – with a price freeze.

But Kavanagh also understands some fans will want to wait until it is more certain that stadiums can operate at full capacity from the start of next season.

There is a chance of pilot events this season, while countries such as

Denmark say they will have fans at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen when the delayed Euro 2020 starts this June.

“I think the whole country feels a bit more positive,” Kavanagh said as he gave an update on Millwall’s website this week. “The sun’s shining. The vaccine rollout is working, as we can see, and there’s a positivity that next season we’ll be back to full crowds.

“We think it’s important we start planning for that now. For all our mindsets and mental wellbeing we want to get back to seeing normal life.

“Season tickets and having fans here is a normal part of that and we need to get those plans in place.

“So let’s get them on sale and hopefully those who buy now we can reward them with a price-freeze. They can help us and we can help them.

“We do appreciate there’s an element of risk buying now, an element. No

one knows what’s coming, no one thought a year ago we’d be where we are today.

“If you can buy now, can financially afford it and feel confident as we do that we’re moving down the pathway – as Boris [Johnson] says, there are no obstacles in the way at the moment.

“We do recognise others will want to wait until there is even more confidence. That’s fine but somewhere in this we want to financially reward those who can reward us now as we did with the 3,000 that bought last year. We’ve hopefully looked after them as best we could in difficult circumstances.

“I’m not going to hide from the fact, we need money. Season tickets would normally be on sale now so we want to get them on sale and if you can buy them we are rewarding you by freezing the prices.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT hasn’t ruled out a permanent move for Ryan Woods this summer and would like talks with the midfielder’s representatives.

Woods, 27, will have spent a seasonand-a-half on loan at Millwall from Stoke City at the end of this campaign.

The former Brentford and Shrewsbury player has been almost an

ever-present under Rowett, playing 36 out of 38 league games this season.

Woods told the News recently that the “numbers” might make any deal difficult. He is on a salary at Stoke that is above Millwall’s current budget and though he has only a year left on his contract the Lions would have to pay a significant fee for a player who cost the Potters over £6million.

Rowett would like to sign Woods for a third time, and on a second permanent deal after he brought him to Stoke.

“I don’t think it’s ruled out or ruled

in,” Rowett said. “The fact of the matter is, like any loan player, he’s not our player so me talking about it publicly is probably not going to help us get a player.

“It’s one of those things that I’ll sit down with his agent, I’ll sit down with the club and see whether it’s something we pursue or not.

“We’ve been very lucky to have him for eighteen months. He’s been a really good fixture in my Millwall team since he’s come in.

“He’s a good player but he’s not our player so we have to be respectful of

that.”

Woods has been in excellent form in 2021, adding more penetrative forward passing to his game and getting assists against QPR and Preston last month.

“It’s probably something he’s put pressure on himself to do. We’ve been speaking about it with him since we were at Stoke,” Rowett said.

“I think Woodsy is the sort of player that he should set up chances and he should set up goals, even though he’s playing a holding role.

“For me, he’s got the ability to unlock

the door with those passes.

“What was nice was when he played the ball over the top for Mason [Bennett’s] winning goal against Preston. Then against QPR he played two or three of those passes during the game.

“That’s what he’s got the ability to do. Of course you need those forwardrunning options to hit, and it was nice to see him doing that.

“That’s something we’ve demanded for a long time from Woodsy and I think when he adds that to his game he looks an even better player.”
