£10,000 was needed to allow the centre in Camberwell to pay its rent

Southwark Pensioners’ Centre stay in its Camberwell Road premises for the next year after it lost much of its income due to lockdown, its director told the News.

The centre, which has been running for 34 years, aims to improve health and wellbeing and reduce loneliness among people aged 50 or older in the borough. In 2019/20, the group worked with about 1,100 people.

Its income before the pandemic came largely from grants, hiring out its event space and other fees. But this model “fell apart” during the pandemic, director Cathy Deplessis said.

When lockdown hit, Deplessis said she and her colleague “became logistics experts” as they began delivering food to about 90 people - at first handing out parcels that they put together themselves from donations, and

then working with a local food bank. At the same time they were applying for grants to pay the rent.

The grant from the mayor’s fund will also help the centre keep up its activities, which include social events, art classes, computer sessions and even podiatry.

But with social distancing in place, some of the rooms in the centre can only hold a few people, making it hard to put on activities.

Instead art and social sessions have been held at the RCCG House of Praise church nearby.

The centre is due to reopen on April 12 as part of the gradual removal of coronavirus restrictions.

The community spaces at risk fund has provided nearly £200,000 in emergency grants to 23 groups. The upper limit of each grant was £10,000.

Few companies offer tailored support to women experiencing the menopause and its range of symptoms.

The menopause can have a detrimental effect on women at work, with one survey reporting that one in four have considered leaving their role because they were struggling with issues including hot flushes, ‘brain fog’, tiredness, and other side effects.

Research from the Menopause Hub has also found that around a third of menopausal women have seen their symptoms worsen during the pandemic.

LSBU’s new menopause policy aims to enable employees to continue being effective in their jobs and to raise wider awareness and understanding among all staff about the menopause.

Affected staff will have an individual plan to support them, and managers will also be offered guidance to help their colleagues including specific training on women’s health issues.

In wider awareness raising, all staff will learn more about the menopause in an effort to create a more supportive workplace culture.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

New species of shrimp found after ‘hitchhiking’ on ocean rock to Horniman museum

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A new species of shrimp has been named at the Horniman Museum after being discovered in its aquarium tanks.

The shrimp has been named Heteromysis hornimani by marine biologist Dr Daniel Abed-Navandi after being identified during a survey of global shrimp species.

The Horniman’s team responded to a call out to submit samples as part of the research into different species, whereupon the biologist discovered they were an entirely new variety.

The shrimp live in all the museum’s aquarium tanks, where it is believed they started out as one hitchhiker brought over on an ocean rock many years ago to the South Circular. Since then it has been breeding away while also being a food source for other fish and aquatic life. Visitors can identify the tiny species by their trademark figure-of-eight zig-zag movements around the tanks.

Researchers have now identified the species, hitherto unknown, in other zoos and aquaria across the world. It is believed that in the natural world this species may have originated in the Caribbean.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Camberwell and Peckham has one of the worst COVID-19 vaccine uptake rates in the country, with under 70 per cent of over 65s having their jabs.

The constituency is one of the ten in London to have the lowest coverage in the country.

In most key measures, Southwark borough’s vaccination rate is also lagging behind southeast London as a whole.

Although more than 537,000 vaccinations have been administered to date, there are clear gaps emerging - including within the highest risk groups.

According to data accurate up to March 11, shared with Southwark Council’s health and wellbeing board, just 77.6 per cent of over 80s had been vaccinated in Southwark, the second lowest in south-east London. The figures for over 75s and 70s are also below 80 per cent.

Only 66.7 per cent of those classed ‘clinically extremely vulnerable’ - of any age group - have received jabs, while only 70.9 per cent of over 65s have been inoculated.

Most worryingly, uptake among registered kinship carers is very low, at just 39.8 per cent, as is take-up by care home staff.

Currently, less than half the borough’s care home staff have had a jab.

The latest data also paints a picture of great disparity between the most deprived and wealthier areas of the borough, and attitudes to the vaccinations forming along ethnic lines.

Uptake among the 65-59 age group is highest in Dulwich Village at 90 per cent and lowest in Peckham at just 60 per cent.

In Southwark, around 85 per cent of white patients classed as a high priority for first jabs have taken up the offer, a figure recorded at just 56 per cent among the black Caribbean population.

Not only have there been reported issues with supply and resources to administer vaccinations but, as the News has reported, certain groups including younger people and those black and south Asian ethnic minority backgrounds are more likely to be ‘vaccine hesitant’.

Although much of this is attributed to fake news and vaccine hoax material, including false claims it can cause infertility or contains meat products, some hesitancy is the result of mistrust in the authorities and a healthcare system riddled with inequalities. There is also distrust of large drug companies, some of which have a particularly chequered history in the African continent.

Add into the mix Southwark’s often transient population, large numbers of nonEnglish speakers and the number of people not registered with a GP and it becomes clear local health officials have a huge task ahead.

their offer for a jab are also most at risk, both due to being overrepresented in frontline roles and also the likelihood of living in multigenerational households.

Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman is among those furious that Southwark was not invited to apply for a £23 million pot of funding to help encourage people to have their jabs.

Despite fulfilling all the criteria of a borough at high risk, it did not make the shortlist of preselected local authorities and despite lobbying from Harman and her Labour colleagues no answer as to why has been forthcoming from the government.

“What is clear is that there is a real problem and we are lagging behind,” she told the News.

“This threatens to deepen health inequalities and widen the health divide in Southwark and it’s very important to address it.”

Early this year Sadiq Khan claimed London was not receiving its fair share of vaccine supplies and, last month, we reported that housebound patients in Southwark desperate for vaccines - many of whom rely on carers were still waiting for their first jabs, including those in their 80s.

When asked whether the issue is purely hesitancy due to lack of confidence in the vaccine, or due to difficulty rolling out the programme due to supply shortages or lack of staff and volunteers, Harman said: “There needs to be proper resources and a whole range of measures to address this.

“Peer to peer messaging is important, and we need a higher level of vaccine accessibility in Southwark.

“What has been particularly galling is that Southwark hasn’t been allowed to apply for funding to help the vaccine take-up. The council is being blocked from doing that.”

She said more community pharmacies administering jabs and more staff working on the vaccine drive would all help.

Southwark Council is ploughing huge resources into the vaccination drive, including setting up a network of 66 and counting community health ambassadors - with particular interest from people based in Peckham and Nunhead - tasked with reaching out to their networks and people from similar backgrounds to help dispel vaccine myths and answer questions and concerns. They are also sharing information in multiple languages and working with Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group on a series of pop-up vaccination events.

There have also been a series of continuing public meetings giving residents the opportunity to put their questions to public health officials and doctors, and a helpline is being set up that people can call to talk through their concerns and get answers to their questions.

A spokesperson said: “The work we are doing collectively is having an impact. More than 80,000 people in Southwark have been vaccinated, over 90% of older people care home residents have been vaccinated, and Southwark saw one of the highest increases in vaccine take-up (up by 17.9%) in London between February and March. But we still have a long way to go, and we are working relentlessly to support our communities to make the right decision for them and their loved ones.”

In one ray of light, although the vaccine rollout is proving as difficult as feared, Southwark does now have the distinction of having the second lowest COVID-19 incidence rates in London, with figures decreasing by half each week.

A spokesperson for South East London CCG acknowledged the lower take-up in some parts of the borough, but added: “In Southwark, eight in 10 people aged 70 and over have had their first dose of the vaccine thanks to the hard work of our staff and

Controversial Camberwell church taken over by Charity Commission

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The charity regulator has taken over a Camberwell Church the News exposed for selling ‘plague protection kits’ during the first lockdown.

The Charity Commission has now appointed an interim manager to The Kingdom Church GB, based in Camberwell Station Road, after launching an inquiry last August.

The commission launched the probe in response to concerns over the organisation’s finances.

The inquiry’s remit includes looking into the trustee’s management of the charity’s resources and financial affairs, including the potential for funds to be ‘unaccounted for and misapplied’.

In a statement published in March 2021, the commission confirmed that it had “serious ongoing concerns” about the charity and its relationship with two subsidiaries, World Conquerors Christian Centres and The Kingdom Church.

Regulators say the charity does not have a bank account, with its funds instead being deposited in its subsidiaries’ bank accounts.

Both subsidiaries have been removed from the charity’s control - with regulators trying to ascertain whether this was done lawfully.

As the News first reported in August 2020, Bishop Climate Wiseman from Bishop Climate Ministries, part of The Kingdom Church, was advertising £91 COVID-19 ‘cures’.

The bishop went on to defend his actions, saying he could not deny the

healing power of the almighty, but later slammed this newspaper as ‘the antichrist’.

Virginia Henley of Hewitsons LLP was appointed as interim manager of the charity under the Charities Act 2011 on February 15, 2021, to fully review the organisation’s future. The commission’s inquiry also continues.

The National Secular Society had reported the church to the commission over its ‘plague protection kits’. Its head of policy and research, Megan Manson, said: “This is a welcome intervention from the Charity Commission. This church’s future as a registered charity is now being questioned, and rightly so.

“All charities, including religious charities, must be held to account when they engage in unethical and harmful behaviour.”

Three cats perish in Crystal Palace fire

The blaze had broken out in a garden building in Tudor Road around half four in the afternoon.

Firefighters rescued four cats from the building but three of them died soon after.

No people were harmed but part of a singlestorey building divided into two flats was damaged.

A resident had called 999 after seeing smoke billowing from the building.

The fire was brought under control by 5.18pm by crews from West Norwood Fire Station, who are now investigating the cause.

There is a proposal to close the Walworth primary due to a decline in pupils

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A petition has been set up to save St John’s CofE Primary School in Walworth from closure.

As the News reported last week, the school’s governors have launched a consultation into the proposed closure citing a huge deficit in its finances due to declining pupil numbers.

This comes despite the school being within the wider Old Kent Road area, where 20,000 new homes are expected to be built in a huge regeneration scheme.

The school has 220 places but only 144 are now filled, creating a deficit of £350,000 for the next academic year.

Those parents behind the petition say they are “truly gutted”, with children set to move schools feeling “anxious, nervous but most of all scared of leaving their friends and teachers that they’ve built a special bond with and made the most fantastic memories with.” More than 300 people have signed so far.

They have also praised the school’s head

teacher, Matthew Velada-Billson, for turning the school around since it was told to improve

by Ofsted inspectors in 2018, after what inspectors dubbed a period of “considerable turbulence”.

“The impact he had started to really turn the school around. He hasn’t had time to advertise admission or new intakes for 2021 due to a pandemic for the last year, so admissions are low. Mr Velada-Billson gained back the respect of the community the trust in us parents, and the respect from our children,” the petition says.

Southwark Council has said the decision is one for the school’s governors and, as it is a faith school, the Southwark's Anglican Diocese.

A Southwark Diocesan Board of Education spokesperson told the News last week: “The decision to propose the consultation on school closure was made by the school’s governing body.

Although the News has been told by MP Neil Coyle that the option is under consideration, parents have yet to be notified. The Education Commission for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Southwark declined to comment when approached by the News with the claims.

Bermondsey’s blue transformed by the summer

Better facilities for traders, toilets, new cinema and multi-arts space

kit@southwarknews.co.uk The £2m regeneration of Bermondsey’s Blue market is set to finish on schedule in July after months of work.

All the market sheds are now being renovated, and there will be better facilities for the traders, including canopies and toilets, as well as a new cinema and multi-arts space, a clock tower and other design changes.

“The market wasn’t doing great for a while,” said Russell Dryden, a fishmonger and director of the Bermondsey Blue business improvement district (BID).

“None of the facilities worked that well, and it was difficult to get the traders in without them.

“It’s not hard to get traders in general but when the toilets don’t work and you can’t get any electricity, you can’t blame them for not being so interested”.

There will also be a market office and better storage for traders, with new electric shutters and new lighting. Dryden hopes that this will encourage traders not to drive to the market. This could help bring down noise and air pollution improving the overall atmosphere of the area.

Project managers are encouraging people who want to launch their own businesses to use the Blue as a starting place. “If you want to see if your business idea works, this would be a good place to try,” Dryden said. “You can take it off the kitchen table into a real scenario.”

The market will also see plenty of design changes. A project outline shows that the square will be divided in two - the trading area at the front and a social “village green” with more plants and benches at the back.

The village green section will also have a clock tower, harking back to the former tower on the nearby Peek Frean’s factory.

The new green oak tower will contain silver discs, a nod to the tin cans first made in Bermondsey in the early 19th century.

The space will also have plaques and storefront shutters with graphics commemorating local history, Dryden said. Other changes include new cycle racks, colourful brick paving and better lighting.

“It’s important for these new developments not to forget the past. You don’t want to be stuck in the past, but a nod is important,” he added.

Part of the problem has been attracting people to the Blue, Dryden said. With that in mind, project managers are getting a new zebra crossing put in to connect nearby Blue Anchor Lane with the busy

St James’ Road, and putting in place a cutthrough to the market.

“We’re trying to encourage more people into the area, create that connection and make it more inviting to get more people into the Blue,” Dryden added.

The old Thorowgoods furniture shop is set to become a cinema and multi-arts space as part of the renovation of the Blue.

The BID is currently holding a survey to gather people’s thoughts on what the new venue should provide.

As part of the redevelopment, some 22 nearby shops will get a makeover, including new paintwork and signage.

Several nearby businesses have stopped trading, including the Blue Anchor pub.

The future of these sites remains unclear, but Dryden said the BID is trying to secure suitable tenants.

Elsewhere, in October, a new community mural was unveiled in the railway underpass on St James’ Road.

And a new artwork on the nearby John Bull arch is set to be finished in April or May by mural artist Paul Butler, who created the famous Cable Street painting in Limehouse. Painting was due to start recently but had to be delayed because of water leakage problems in the arch.

Elmington Estate targeted by conmen

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Burglars pretending to be builders working in Elmington Estate conned their way into a resident's home and stole cash and bank cards.

The conmen targeted Milton House on Monday March 15 around 11am, and gained access to the home by claiming to be workmen inspecting the

water supply.

One man suspect stayed with the resident encouraging them to turn on and off the taps while the other man searched two bedrooms.

Southwark Police have warned residents to be vigilant and never let anyone in your home without a prior appointment.

It is believed the burglars had also tried and failed to target another flat in the estate the same day.

Although police did recover fingerprints, they have not matched them with any records on their database.

Another distraction burglary was reported in Cossall Walk in Peckham two days later - it is not currently known if they are linked.

A 94-year-old woman let a man into her house after he claimed to have a parcel. He then stole cash and bank cards from her bag.

Both cases are under investigation.

sexual harassment claims by former Dulwich College pupil

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk More than a hundred testimonies allegeding sexual harassment by Dulwich College schoolboys have been published in an open letter by a former student, who says the school is a ‘breeding ground for sexual predators’.

Allegations against the £22,000-a-year selective public school detailed in the dossier include claims of revenge porn, as well as blatant sexism. Compiled by exstudent Samuel Schulenburg, 19, it also includes personal accounts from former female pupils who say they were targeted while at neighbouring James Allen’s Girls’ School (JAGS).

A JAGS spokesperson said: “The testimonies of alleged social and sexual misconduct are harrowing to read and we admire the courage of those who have come forward. The incidents highlighted are entirely unacceptable and JAGS condemns unreservedly the behaviours described.

The safeguarding of our pupils is our

absolute priority and JAGS takes allegations of this nature extremely seriously. We are listening carefully to our pupils, alumnae and parents. Dulwich College was contacted by the News but did respond before going to press. However in a statement responding to other enquiries Dulwich College Master Dr Spence “condemned unreservedly the alleged social and sexual misconduct” by current and former students described in the open letter. He said the alleged behaviour was “distressing and entirely unacceptable”. He added that Dulwich plans to hold lessons on issues such as consent, pornography and all forms of casual and overt sexism.

Camberwell man charged over ‘high value vehicle thefts’

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A man from Southwark is among three charged in connection with the theft and fraudulent sale of at least 70 ‘high value’ vehicles.

Lenus Rosil, aged 40, from New Church Road in Camberwell was charged on Thursday, March 18, along with 37-year-old Alax Alabo from Southend-on-Sea’s Victoria Avenue and Richard Barker (38) from Warburton Terrace in Waltham Forest.

There were charged with conspiracy to acquire, use or possess criminal property between November 17, 2019 and February 26 this year.

They all appeared at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, March 18.

Ten addresses in London, Essex and Hertfordshire were raided by officers in the early hours of last Wednesday morning (March 18).

Six other men were bailed pending further enquiries.

Man stabbed in Peckham park

The victim is believed to have been knifed in the back in the park before being found nearby in Upland Road,

East Dulwich, by paramedics at around 9.42pm.

There have been no arrests.

The investigation is being led by Central South Basic Command Unit detectives.

Teenager charged with murder of Peckham’s Lavaun Witter

Eighteen-year-old Tyreece WolfriesParkin, from Rothesay Road in Selhurst, was arrested on Monday (March 22). He was charged with murder the same day.

Lavaun, 22, was found stabbed in Croydon’s Wisbeach Road at 8.10pm on February 5. He died at the scene.

Wolfries-Parkin has also been charged with the attempted murder of a sixteenyear-old boy and possession of a bladed article.

He appeared at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (March 23).

The two other men charged over the murder are Tyreece Riggon, 20, of Armistice Gardens in South Norwood and Julian Russell, 22, of Sanfield Road in

Thornton Heath.

They have also been charged with intent to cause grievous bodily harm of a sixteen-year-old boy and possession of a bladed article.

They appeared at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on February 20 and were remanded to appear at the Old Bailey on May 10.

On the road out of lockdown unemployment could reach 10 per cent by december

Calls from London Councils for authorities to be given more money help its residents

Almost one in ten Londoners could be unemployed by the end of the year, say economists.

According to new research commissioned by London Councils, the body representing all 32 boroughs, unemployment is expected to peak at 9.4 per cent in December 2021; equivalent to 464,000 out of work across the city.

Shockingly, this is not even a worsecase forecast, with the potential for over half a million (580,000) to become unemployed by February 2022 if the post-COVID recovery is slower than anticipated.

Its authors, economists from Volterra Partners, found that the pandemic has once more widened the unemployment gap between London and the rest of the UK, which had narrowed over the last five years.

Groups expected to be particularly hard-hit include ethnic minorities who are already twice as likely to be out of work, and residents with

fewer qualifications who dominate industries with high furlough rates including retail and hospitality.

Councillor Clare Coghill, London Councils’ executive member for skills and employment, said: “The economic fallout from COVID-19 threatens a painful legacy of unemployment in the capital.

“This analysis paints a grim picture of worsening job losses. It’s hard to overstate how worried we are by these forecasts.

“Unemployment on this scale will have serious and long-lasting consequences – including widening London’s economic and social inequalities even further.

“The COVID-19 crisis has shown time and again how councils play a vital role in responding to local challenges and co-ordinating services.

“With unemployment set to be one of the key concerns of the coming months and years, we need an urgent reset of the government’s approach to tackling this issue.

“Rather than top-down, centralised structures, the government must empower local authorities to develop local solutions for helping our residents back into work.”

London Councils is calling for local authorities, including Southwark, to be given more powers to help people back into work, including through the job centre network, currently overseen by the Department for Work and Pensions.

Its members are also pushing for Restart, the government’s flagship support programme for the unemployed to be decentralised.

Bootcamp SE16 to reopen on March 29

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Rotherhithe outdoor fitness club Bootcamp SE16 is set to restart in-person sessions next week, Monday, March 29.

The government said that outdoor sports facilities could reopen from the end of March, as long as people keep to groups of six or under.

That is among the measures that Bootcamp SE16 founder Stephanie Jannati put in place to help keep people safe from coronavirus at the end of the first lockdown last year.

Other rules include all customers wearing gloves during sessions, no one sharing fitness equipment and people staying socially distanced. Jannati asks customers to watch a safety video before coming back to in-person classes.

The bootcamp had been running online classes even before lockdown, for mothers with young children who had no time to get to the in-person sessions in Stave Hill and Russia Dock Woodland.

When the pandemic first hit all of our members got to join the online classes," Jannati told the News.

"Every time we come into a lockdown we go fully online. Every time we come out our members get an email saying if you’d like to come outside please do, or if you’d like to stay online you can."

Jannati added that Bootcamp SE16 is a good solution for people who want to get fit but sometimes struggle with motivation.

Before new customers get started, customers contact them to talk about their fitness and sort them into the right group. Customers then go through a ten-day trial to work out if the bootcamp suits them.

Midnight Apothecary, which is in the grounds of the Brunel Museum on Railway Avenue, has socially distanced space for up to about 140 people across its terrace and roof garden.

Groups have their own individual firepit that they can toast marshmallows on. Customers can order food from the nearby Mayflower pub using an app, which is opening in the same week.

“We put tickets on sale this week and bookings are just flying,” manager Lottie Muir told the News.

Groups can book spaces on the roof garden, which seats up to 84 people, or the terrace, which has room for 60. The night is divided in two, with bookings either for 5-7.15pm or 7.30-10pm.

Some of the ingredients on the menu at the Midnight Apothecary are grown in the garden and the menu changes depending on the season.

Customers should expect cherry blossom martinis and “midnight margaritas” among the drinks on offer, Muir added.

The Plough in East Dulwich will reopen with outdoor seating for more than 200 Horseshoe Inn is in demand: ‘Could

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The Plough pub on Lordship Lane in East Dulwich will reopen its outdoor areas on April 12 with space for more than 200 people, manager Jaan Mottus has said.

About a third of those spaces will be covered and be close to outdoor heaters, he told the News.

Bookings have been very busy, with spaces on the first weekend after reopening fully taken, Mottus

added.

The pub has not been providing takeaway or delivery services during lockdown. Instead, Mottus said he and other staff members have spent time volunteering for good causes in the local area.

Mottus said he had been volunteering as a driver for the NHS in his downtime, while other employees more recently have been helping with the 2021 census rollout in London.

“We’re really looking forward to reopening,” Mottus said. “We can’t wait.”

'What happens in a gale?' the landlord of Whelan’s slams outdoor pub opening rules

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The landlord of Whelan's pub in Surrey Quays has hit out at the government for only allowing pubs to reopen outdoor areas on April 12 as part of the gradual move to remove Covid-19 rules.

Ciaran Canavan, who runs the pub on Rotherhithe Old Road, has a garden with room for about 60 people, which he plans to open in April if coronavirus restrictions allow.

But he said he did not understand the difference between sitting inside with doors and windows open to let air come through - which will not be allowed until May under the current timeline and sitting outdoors.

"A lot of my customers here are elderly - they come here to sit inside for the comfort. Sitting outside is not what they want," he told the News.

"It’s alright sitting outside in the garden when there’s not a gale going through. What are you supposed to do if it starts raining - give all the customers a refund and send them all home?"

Canavan added that he thought the new rules are also undermined by the fact people are allowed to come inside to use the toilets.

Scientists generally think that people are more likely to spread Covid-19 indoors than outdoors.

The Whelan's landlord said was forced to close another bar last year, Canavan's Pool Club on Peckham's Rye Lane, because of coronavirus restrictions, local road closures and changes to bus routes.

Canavan has lost around £35,000-£40,000 worth of beer during lockdown, as well as bar snacks that went off, he said. But he remains determined to keep going as long as he can.

"We’re going to keep going as long as we can to serve our customers," he said.

Peter Collie told the News that tables at the pub on Melior Street, between Guy’s Hospital and Bermondsey Street, are already completely booked up on four or five days.

“We could have booked them ten times over!,” he added. “And there’s another month to go.”

Pubs are set to reopen outdoor areas on April 12, after closing their doors several months ago for the latest coronavirus lockdown.

Reopening is not totally set in stone yet - the decision could still be reversed if infection rates do not continue to go down, or vaccine targets are not met.

But Collie is remaining hopeful, despite the challenges still facing and other hospitality venues.

“We’ll keep our fingers crossed that we’ll be allowed to open,” he said. “Hopefully it’ll be a good summer to come.”

Bermondsey’s King’s Arms will be providing blankets as they re-open

The King’s Arms, on Tooley Street, is taking bookings for its outdoor tables, with room for about 40 people in total. The pub is also doing takeaway drinks, manager Jade Dowsett-Roberts told the News.

The pub will be open every day from April 12, with bookings already filling up fast, DowsettRoberts said. But the manager urged people not to book tables at several pubs at the same time,

leaving precious space empty, as happened the last time pubs reopened in the summer.

“It is a bit of a concern,” Dowsett-Roberts said.

“But to be honest we’re a regulars’ pub, and quite a lot of our bookings so far have come from our regulars living nearby, so we’re not worried about them.”

Bookings are usually for two hours at a time, with staff sanitising seating areas in between groups.

Customers can also get blankets if the weather turns cold, which staff will wash after each use. The pub has awnings that can cover the tables if it rains.

“People are sensible, they’ll bring their coats and hats as well,” Dowsett-Roberts added. “It’s London in April, we’ve got to expect a bit of rain. But hopefully we’ll still get lots of people round.”

teen is jailed for two years after Oxford Street fight

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Southwark teenager has been jailed after he took a machete to an Oxford Street brawl last summer that left another boy dead.

Ocean Rowe, 18, from Borough, was sentenced to two years in prison for attempted grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place on Wednesday.

The court heard that Rowe was seen to brandish a machete and chase a man

during the central London fight on August 8 last year.

Police were called at about 5.30pm that afternoon to reports of a fight among a group of armed men. Rowe’s friend Jeremy Chalarca-Meneses, 17, was killed after the knife fight, officers said.

Police have not charged anyone yet in connection with the death of ChalarcaMeneses.

Rowe had previously pleaded guilty to both charges at Highbury Corner Youth Court on December 17 last year. He was sentenced at Highbury Magistrates

Court.

Detective Chief Inspector Katherine Goodwin from the Met Police’s specialist crime unit said that Rowe’s jail sentence “sends a clear message” about the consequences of knife crime.

She added: “This incident resulted in the loss of a young man’s life and demonstrates more than ever the urgency to remove knives from the hands of those who would use them to harm others.

“An everyday item used for everyday tasks that in unsafe hands can become a dangerous and sinister weapon.”

ULEZ Extension could Detectives investigating attempted save Southwark NHS murder look at Range Rover link £100 Million by 2050

Detectives have shared more information about a Range Rover found abandoned in Kennington, which they believe is linked to the attempted murder of a seventeenyear-old in Brixton.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The extension of the ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ) to include all inner London boroughs will save NHS services in Southwark nearly £100 million by 2050, a study claims.

The ULEZ will expand from central London to the North and South Circular roads on October 25. The zone already includes part of Southwark, from Blackfriars Bridge in the north-west to the Elephant & Castle roundabout in the south, and Tower Bridge Road in the east.

The study, carried out by Lumen Health on behalf of Transport for London and the Greater London Authority, suggests that the ULEZ will cut diseases linked to air pollution in London by nearly 30%, possibly saving the NHS £4 billion in total over the next 30 years.

Some £97.8 million of that could be saved in Southwark – money that can be ploughed back into local services, a local politician said.

Marina Ahmad, who is running as a Labour candidate for Southwark and Lambeth in the London Assembly elections in May, said that protecting local people’s health is a “top priority”.

“That is why I am encouraged by the results of this study suggesting many lives could be saved across Southwark as a result of the Mayor’s action to tackle toxic air,” she added.

“This pandemic has demonstrated the incredible commitment of our NHS workers who have been overworked and underfunded for too long. I am glad that the ULEZ will help generate savings of £97,844,081 which can be reinvested in local NHS services protecting the health of Southwark residents for many years to come.”

Anyone who drives in a petrol or diesel vehicle in the ULEZ have to pay a charge of £12.50 per day, or £100 for some heavier lorries and coaches. Some residents and disabled people are exempt. Many people have welcomed the decision to extend the ULEZ as a way of protecting people against air pollution. Others are concerned about the possible impact on local businesses.

In a renewed appeal, the Met are calling for any witnesses of the seemingly random attack in Henry Road, at 6.15pm on Tuesday, February 23, to come forward.

The victim, teenage James Bascoe-Smith, is fighting for his life in hospital after being stabbed in a ‘horrific and unprovoked attack’ while riding his bike in a residential street. He was attacked by a group and knifed multiple times.

Police say two vehicles had been driven to the area from the Oval before the attack, and left the scene minutes later.

Detective Sergeant Charlotte Carter said: “We now know that two vehicles, a black

VW Passat and a black Range Rover Evoque, travelled in convoy from the Kennington Oval area to Henry Road prior to the attack.

“The same vehicles then left in convoy with the Passat abandoned in nearby Foxley Road minutes later.

“The Range Rover would have been noticeable because the only rear lights that worked on it were the brake lights.

“It returned to the Kennington Oval area where police located it, abandoned, at 3am the next morning.

“I am appealing for any witnesses who may have any information about the attack on Henry Road, or the movements of this distinctive looking Range Rover, to come forward.”

James’ aunt, Rachel Duncan, said: “The perpetrators do not realise the ripple effect of their actions. They have not just violently injured James, they have ripped apart our lives.

“I urge anyone who knows anything about the attack to come forward.”

So far there have been no arrests.

Allison Robertshaw was shopping in the Canada Water Sainsbury’s local last Friday when she noticed a group of young women not wearing masks behind her in the queue - breaking government rules ordering people to wear face coverings in shops to slow the spread of coronavirus.

Robertshaw said she asked her fellow shoppers to put on masks - getting a hail of foul-mouthed abuse in return.

“It was things like, ‘you b*tch, f*ck you, who the f*ck do you think you are,” she told the News. “It was terrifying.”

None of the staff stepped in to defend her, nor were security guards on hand to enforce mask wearing Robertshaw claimed.

We’re in touch with Allison to apologise for her experience.”

Robertshaw said she called the police because Sainsbury’s staff did not help her.

A police spokesperson said: “Police were called at 09:15hrs to a supermarket in Surrey Quays Road SE16 after a woman alleged that she was verbally abused by two other women. There were no reports of any injuries.”

Campaigners say the south side was earmarked as an extension of the park years ago

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Local campaigners have hit out a proposed housing development on the south side of Burgess Park, arguing that it has been earmarked as an extension to the park for decades.

The new plans, at 1-13 Southampton Way, would see scrap yards knocked down and turned into 32 flats in a building ranging from three to seven storeys, as well as a café and bike stand.

Of the 32 flats, six would be for social rent and the remaining 26 would be for shared ownership, according to planning documents.

Developer Burlington Homes would also clear and decontaminate a third of the site before giving it to the council to be added to the park.

But local community group Friends of Burgess Park said that the development would be “a tragedy” because the entire site is designated as Metropolitan Open Land, one of the highest levels of protection.

Campaigners point out that the council has previously proposed buying up the land through a compulsory purchase order. A report in January 2014 said that “this work will dramatically improve the environment at the north end of Southampton Way and for the regenerated Elmington Estate. This proposed sizable increase in green space will also yield benefits for Camberwell as a whole.”

Friends of Burgess Park and Burgess Park Action Group want the council to buy up the land and add it to the park to protect the area’s biodiversity, which

A 2013 London Wildlife Trust report found that although the park had “moderate biodiversity value” it

could improve to “high” with the right management. A 1992 report by the same organisation found that the New Church Road area of the park is “without doubt, the richest wildlife habitat of Burgess Park and of the whole northwest Southwark area.”

Adding more green space would

be in line with the history of Burgess Park, campaigners said. The park was originally created after the second world war by clearing slum housing and privately held land was bought up by city authorities.

The development is one of several possible new housing blocks in the area

south of the park, including in nearby Parkhouse Street. Campaigners are also concerned that this could create a “corridor” effect on the park and cause shadowing, which they said could affect the wildlife.

The groups are running a petition protesting the development which has gained nearly 3,500 signatures, and 375 people have lodged objections to the scheme on the council’s planning website. Some 48 have spoken out in favour of the proposal.

Friends of Burgess Park and its supporters have also drawn up alternative plans for landscaping the entire site.

Philip Patrick, managing director of developers Burlington Homes, said that he had spent two years in consultation with local people, the council and the Greater London Authority and added that the development, which is technically all “affordable”, would help meet the borough’s “pressing housing need”.

He noted that the council had not bought up the site despite the 2014 recommendations and pointed out that the plans include 424 square feet of land to be cleared, decontaminated, landscaped and given for public use as part of the park.

In response to questions about the impact on the park’s wildlife, Patrick said that the development will include new areas of native scrub and shrubs, while also keeping mature trees, among other plans.

“Concerns have been raised by some objectors about the potential overshadowing of the proposals upon the park, and the impact this may have upon its biodiversity,” he added.

“It should be noted that where the highest levels of shading will occur, close to the building, species have been chosen that thrive in shaded conditions.

All areas of native planting will receive sunlight for significant periods of the day and as many of the species are shade tolerant, will continue to establish.”

Southwark Council declined to comment.

Council unveils seventeen new social rent homes in Walworth

new residents of William Cuffay House in Walworth are celebrating getting keys this month.

Construction completed on the new council block overlooking Pelier Park at the end of 2020 with the seventeen flats now ready for their new tenants.

The development includes four one beds, nine two beds, and four three bed flats. All are double or triple aspect with panoramic views over London.

The block has also been designed to be ‘car free’.

All properties in the seven-storey building, which includes two duplexes, are at social rent.

Jessica Smith, a new resident in the building, said: “I’m so happy with my new flat. It’s really spacious and an enormous improvement on where I was living before.

“I love that everything is brand new, it’s like having a clean slate. I want to say thank you to Southwark Council for giving me and my family the opportunity to live here”.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Council Housing, said: “I’m particularly proud of this development which showcases the very best of council housing – spacious, highquality design, modern fixtures and fittings, and enviably located.

“I’m delighted that residents in housing need are moving into these new homes which provide them with the safe, secure, affordable and highquality housing they desperately need.”

The development is named after William Cuffay, the son of a former slave who was a leading figure in the Kennington Chartist movement in the 1800s.

The Chartist movement was the first mass popular political movement in British history and campaigned for workers’ rights and universal suffrage.

A virtual opening event to welcome residents to the new building will be held on March 31, 2021, by Southwark Council.

The shadow minister for housing and planning, Mike Amesbury MP, will be in attendance along with councillors from Tooley Street.

Southwark Council’s housing boss says huge changes to its housing allocations policy is ‘overdue’.

This month Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for new council homes, announced that the council was

consulting on changes to how the priority band allocations work, and which groups take precedence, saying the policy needs ‘greater flexibility’ and ‘acknowledgement of people’s unique needs’.

The shake-up would allow anyone facing homelessness to join a new band four even if they do not have a connection to Southwark, currently set at five years.

The council also wants to create new maximum income criteria for eligibility, with a cap at savings or assets of £60,000 or more for a single person.

Proposals also suggest armed forces personnel and domestic abuse victims into band two.

Tenants who don’t breach their agreements or fall into arrears will also no longer benefit from automatic priority.

“Many residents feel punished for going through a hard time such as losing employment due to COVID19, and then awaiting benefit claims to be put in place resulting in the applicant falling into rent arrears and no longer qualifying for the good tenant status,” council papers explain.

“Consequently, many clients have complained as a result of this refusal feeling disheartened and under- valued as a result.”

Another shake-up could see people living in statutory overcrowded conditions, who lack two or more bedrooms, awarded priority band one status.

Currently, those in overcrowded housing can only join band one if they can prove their situation was not the result of

‘a deliberate act’.

Proposals also recommend moving current and former armed forces personnel in housing need, who are currently in band two, into band one.

Households nominated by social services and those fleeing domestic abuse would also join band two.

The council also wants to change the system so that all applicants can bid for houses, not just ‘families’ with a child under the age of sixteen.

Housing issues have been brought into sharp focus during the pandemic.

The council saw a 51 per cent increase in homeless applications in the last financial year, with unemployment rising in the borough from 22,000 to 44,000 in the last four months alone.

Cllr Cryan said: “Despite our ambitious home building programme, and superb housing options service, it’s still the case that housing is a resource under significant demand.

“A revisit to the way housing is allocated was long overdue. It is really important that we keep abreast of changes in demand, and that our service reflects who is in the greatest need of housing.

A nursery in Elephant and Castle has told the News how it has risen to the challenge of COVID-19 but said there is a ‘stark difference’ in support from the British and Irish governments.

Tigers nursery, which opened its first Southwark branch in Bodley Way last year, is Ireland’s leading early years provider.

CEO Karen Clince told the News: “Lockdown has been really difficult for our colleagues and I have to say their continued commitment to children and families has to be commended.

“There have been times where they have been extremely nervous in regard to infection but have carried on regardless and continued to provide excellence in an ever-changing environment.

“As a company however we have been versed with opening safety leading to a huge change in protocol and our everyday processes.

“Parents are no longer on site which has been difficult for all, and each classroom works in a pod system meaning it is self-contained within the setting.

“We have also increased hygiene in our settings and introduced OZONE air cleaning systems to stay on top of infection control.

“As we operate in two different countries, we have experienced stark differences in support and funding.

“In Ireland we have been heavily supported, which has made things so much easier for all involved.

“Proper support has been in place to substitute funds missing from private fees.

“This means that if children can no longer attend or have to self-isolate,

Although there has been huge press coverage and focus on schools and the various closures and reopening, little attention has been put on early years providers.

Yet their staff have some of the most

difficult jobs to do in a pandemic situation because not only are young children at high risk of transmitting the virus - even though they are at very low risk of becoming ill themselves - it is also impossible to socially distance from a child or toddler needing day-today care.

She said nursery staff, when they have been able to work, are heroes too.

“Like doctors and nurses on the front line they have put the people they care for first and continued to work in what has been scary times,” she told the News.

“For many staff this has meant not being able to see family or friends who are vulnerable. “Many also have families living abroad who they have not seen in a year.

“With restricted socialising during lunch breaks and outside work, they also don’t have the usual social outlets and connections with peers and friends to keep them going.

“However, they have taken every change of policy or procedure on board and, from the start, their priority has been the children they care for.”

She says it is normal to see some ‘attachment issues’ or ‘social regression’ under the current circumstances, but says having children back in their safe nursery bubbles will be a ‘godsend’ for parents who need to be ‘kind to themselves’ after a tough year.

For those worried that COVID-19 anxiety may have a lasting impact, she has these words of wisdom: “We would recommend talking to your children in an age-appropriate manner – this is key.

“It’s also important to focus on ways to solve problems, rather than the problem itself. So discussing hand washing and teaching how important it is to cover coughs is a good start.

“Try also to maintain those important connections with family and friends by organising regular video calls with family and friends .

“It is really hard for parents to try and juggle everything at the moment and so being kind to yourself is important too.

“Children pick up on our stresses and so if you mind yourself, it has a positive knock-on effect on your child.

“If your child is looking for more attention than usual or is clingy, try and give them that time. “Where a child feels secure, they will come out of it.

“Nurseries staying open has been a godsend for most children. Within their pods they are safe and can continue to have a normal childhood experience in a world that is currently far from normal.”

A ten-year-old girl is cutting her hair short to give to a charity that makes wigs for young people with cancer.

Gracie Nathan, who lives in Southwark, is also raising money for the Little Princess Trust to make more wigs. She has had £370 in donations over less than a month since her mother set up the fundraiser.

Katie Nathan told the News: “We originally had a £250 target, which we reached, and now Gracie wants to raise more because she saw that it cost £550 just for one wig made out of real hair.”

Gracie first gave hair to the Little Princess Trust two years ago, and Katie said it was in her daughter’s nature to be charitable.

“She’s good like that, at Christmas she’ll give out care packages to the homeless,” Katie said.

“If she sees a homeless person she’ll

want to go buy them something from the shop. I think it’s about having a good heart.”

Gracie is starting secondary school this September and Katie shared her worry that having short hair in a new school could be difficult for her daughter.

“She’s a little bit worried too I think,” Katie added. “I warned her that people could tease her at secondary school if it’s really short.

“But she’s at that age where she’s finding herself. She said ‘Mum, my hair will grow back - but there’s some kids that need my hair.”

“That’s her attitude. Part of women and girls taking care over their hair is about vanity and I guess she doesn’t really have that side of it. She’s doing a good thing.”

Ambulance workers get charity snack donation as thanks for Covid-19 work London ambulance workers have been given snack boxes as a show of thanks for their work during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The boxes, which also included personalised notes to thank ambulance workers, were donated by the Rapid Relief Team (RRT), a charity set up by the Plymouth Brethren Church.

“Ambulance services have been on the frontline of the UK’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, and we

wanted to show our appreciation for their lifesaving work with this small gesture of thanks,” said RRT London chief Vern Pollard. “We hope these snacks can offer some comfort to this invaluable team.”

The London Ambulance Service has been stretched during the pandemic.

Operators took about 8,000 calls a day around the start of the year, the service said - an increase of about 45% compared to a typical day of 5,500 calls.

The London Ambulance Service’s Nicky Shipp thanked RRT for the donation, adding: “the continued support from the public and from groups like RRT means a lot to us and our crews.”

RRT supports emergency services and other charities by giving food donations, among other support methods. Members of the group were on the scene at the London Bridge terror attack in December 2019 and the Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017.

Cut screen time to sleep better and stay healthy, doctors tell teenagers Doctors at one of London’s top children’s hospitals have warned young people to cut their screen time and exercise more to get an all-important good night’s sleep and protect their long-term health.

Teenagers' sleep patterns have often been disrupted by life changes during the Covid-19 pandemic - which in the long-term can put them at greater risk of becoming obese and developing type 2 diabetes or heart problems.

Not sleeping properly can also stop children doing well at school and lead to anxiety or depression.

Children’s Hospital have put together a resource pack to help teenagers sleep better and avoid these problems.

The tips given by the doctors include ending screen time an hour before bed, not drinking caffeine or sugary drinks after lunch, exercising regularly and getting natural light, working out a calm routine at bedtime, tackling things that make you anxious before bed, and meditation or deep breathing before bedtime.

Dr Michael Farquhar, consultant in paediatric sleep medicine at Evelina London and the lead author of the resource pack, said: “The last year has been particularly disruptive, and many

teenagers’ sleep has been affected as a result. Sleep patterns change as puberty starts, with most body clocks shifting later, meaning the natural times to fall asleep and wake up can be out of sync with expectations of parents and schools.

He added that teenagers' sleep routines could have changed over the past year, as school closures may have let them sleep later - but that the tips in the resource pack should help.

Cheers jose-luis: King’s First Covid-19 patient one year on

The first person treated for Covid-19 at King's College Hospital has described his painstaking recovery from the virus, a year on from when he was first taken to hospital, saying he "had to get better" for his family's sake.

Jose-Luis Fernandez, then 80, was taken to hospital and moved to intensive care two days later. He spent 28 days in that condition before recovering. Staff applauded Jose-Luis out as he left the hospital.

“When I was in hospital, I kept telling myself there was no way this virus would beat me," Jose-Luis said.

"I had to get better for my family and beautiful grandchildren. My gratitude for the staff who looked after me will

last forever.

“My recovery has been slow, and I felt very weak for a long time. Anyone who has been in intensive care will tell you that it takes its toll. But now I am nearly fully recovered, I run around with my grandchildren, and although I’m 81 I feel more like 40!”

Natasha Raphoz, Jose’s daughter, added: “The first days of Dad’s recovery back at home were so hard. We didn’t know if he’d be able to make a full recovery, or how independent he’d be.

But he slowly started getting better, and it felt like we could see the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s about a year to the day he started having Covid-19 symptoms, and he’s just getting back to looking like his old self again. I never

knew if he’d be able to play with my children again, but he’s proved everyone wrong. We feel so lucky.”

Sarah Dheansa, head of nursing for neurosciences at King’s, was part of the team who cared for Jose. She said: “We’ve stayed in touch with Jose, and it’s lifted the team’s hearts to hear how he’s recovering. Watching him with his family and grandchildren reminds us all that there is always hope, despite how sick you become, and that all of our patients are part of something much bigger than we can help restore.

"He is an inspirational figure for the families who still have a loved one unwell, and reminds us of how despite the odds, so many patients have the ability to pull through.”

The Met Police's first "wellbeing dog" has visited a busy southeast London hospital to help NHS workers relax in their downtime from battling the Covid-19 crisis.

Black labrador Dexter, accompanied by his handler PC Sheather, went to University Hospital Lewisham last Wednesday. The aim of the visit was to help staff take a step back and unwind during their busy shifts.

PC Sheather usually takes Dexter to visit other police officers, but after the NHS declared a "major incident" earlier this year, police decided that he could help healthcare staff as well.

Dexter has already visited Homerton hospital and the Royal London hospital in east London.

PC Sheather, from the Met’s Taskforce, said: “I think people underestimate the comfort that our four-legged friends can provide and Dexter is proving an extremely invaluable presence to those who may be in need of that comfort.

“Having helped so many people in the Met, we decided to take Dexter further afield. It’s been a tough year for all of those working in emergency services and NHS staff have been putting their health and wellbeing

£48,000 has been given to help southwark’s cancer patients Cancer patients in Southwark were given £48,000 in charity hardship grants in 2020.

The grants, from specialist cancer charity Macmillan, meant 158 people in the borough could pay for essentials, like heating their homes, travel to and from hospital, clothing and bedding.

As many as 39 per cent of people who are diagnosed with cancer are severely financially affected.

Macmillan's grants, which are funded by donations from the public, aim to help them with everyday outgoings.

The grants are means-tested and can be up to £350. Macmillan said that the most common reason for people applying for the grants is to buy new clothes after cancer treatment changed the way they look.

The grants have become even more important given the added financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the charity added.

Kymberly Goh, Citizens Advice Southwark’s Macmillan welfare benefits team manager, said: “As COVID-19 continues to impact the

lives of people with cancer, we want to reassure everyone that Macmillan is here to help – we’ll do whatever it takes.

“Imagine you can’t pay your heating bill, your washing machine is broken or you need to buy a blender because cancer treatment means you are having trouble eating, but you can’t afford one. It’s these basics that a Macmillan grant can help pay for, making someone’s life that bit easier when they need it most.

“A Macmillan grant is definitely a source of respite for patients when they are in severe financial hardship.

So, if you’re struggling to meet the extra costs of cancer, call Macmillan to see if you are eligible for a grant, as well as checking what other benefits you might be entitled to claim, and to access the rest of the support we offer. Free healthy cooking training available for School chefs Kitchen staff at Southwark schools can get free training to cook more healthy food for school children.

The training, which is being run by charity Chefs in Schools, gives kitchen staff the chance to learn about portion sizes and standards, as well as ways to encourage children to eat more healthily.

The qualification, called School Chef Educator, is available to people who are employed by schools and contractors.

Southwark and Lambeth schools have been chosen to trial the programme because of the area's high level of childhood obesity, which can lead to health conditions like diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

“Childhood obesity has become a national emergency – but one, that as a society, we can tackle,” said Yenny Chong, head of training at the charity.

“The school dining hall presents an amazing opportunity to foster an enjoyment of good food and to learn about healthier food choices. It is vital that school kitchen teams have the knowhow to serve food that is nutritious, balanced and in the right quantities, but at the moment there is no tailored training available for them.

“With the help of schools from Southwark and Lambeth, we can develop training that could help improve child health not just in these areas, but across the country.

“The training on offer is free, tailored to school kitchen teams and will introduce small changes that could make a big difference to children’s lives.”

Chefs in Schools was founded by Henry Dimbleby, who wrote the National Food Strategy, Nicole Pisani, who was head chef at restaurant NOPI and Louise Nichols, executive head of three schools in Hackney.

The free programme runs over fourteen weeks at a minimum of two hours per week. It starts in September 2021. If the trial in Southwark and Lambeth goes well, it will be rolled out nationwide.

Sarah Everard’s vigil: Why we should all be worried by the fallout.

I

t was the silence that was so striking.

We had come to Clapham Common to lay flowers for Sarah Everard. After a horrifying ten days culminated with the 33-year-old’s body confirmed as lying in Kentish woods, we had to pay our respects. It was not a choice. Sarah was my age. We shared a neighbourhood.

We walked the same streets.

We weren’t alone. Lines of women streamed onto the Common from all directions, many carrying pot plants after local shops ran out of bouquets. Mothers, friends, sisters; all ages, all masked and at a sensible distance. All here, drawn by the need to do something. Around the bandstand, a floral carpet silently spread. We weren’t there to talk - what could anyone say?

My friends and I had been harassed that week.

One was catcalled in her pyjamas, another screamed at in the street for not giving a guy her number.

That morning, I’d used the shoelace trick - stopping near bystanders to ‘tie my laces’ in case the man who’d tailed me from the park was still following.

We didn’t tell each other these stories at the time.

They weren’t remarkable. It was just another week.

All women have our safety tricks. Ask your mum.

Ask your sister. Ask your wife. Ask your daughter, if you can bear to hear her response. No one should feel unsafe in public, yet the risk for all women, our trans sisters included, is always there, regardless of age, race, sexuality or what we happen to be wearing. The onus has been on us to deal with these moments for so long - despite them being entirely out of our control - that we’re used to it.

How is that normal?

It’s standard for women to scan the horizon for threats and weigh up walking after dark, but that does not mean it should be. Sarah’s disappearance from a residential street on an unremarkable Wednesday is grotesque - and relatable. She was one of us, and could have been any of us.

That is so far from ‘normal’ it sickens the soul.

That’s why what happened on Clapham Common when the police decided to intervene - I’m being polite - hurts so much. To watch officers grab, push and shove women to the ground is the visualisation of a society skewed far away from women’s experiences being taken seriously. Yes, they were ‘just’ doing their jobs, which no one disputes are even harder since Covid-19. But after a terrifying week in which a woman-snatcher seemed at large in south London - admit it: we were all scared - and

claims emerged that officers may have missed a chance to arrest Sarah’s suspected killer just days before she disappeared, if ever a moment called for professional restraint, it was this. The Met were treading ice worn perilously thin, and they blew it. You do not give reassurance with a slap.

The carnival of mismanagement continues. At points during the last week, you’d be forgiven for thinking a Black Mirror staff writer was running the country. 48 hours after ministers scrambled to tweet their “concern” about scenes on the Common, the government’s flagship crime bill passed it’s second reading. It boosts the maximum penalty for damaging a statue to 10 years. Sentences for rape start at five. You now risk getting longer in prison for tossing a statue in a river than assaulting a woman, if the bill makes it through the Lords and becomes law. And just in case we’re in any doubt about the government’s real priorities: enshrined in the bill are more powers for the police to use their ‘discretion’ in handling protests, just like we saw on Saturday. Riiiiight - so your answer to concerns about how the police handle protests is to give the police freer reign in how they handle protests? And you’re sure you’re not joking?

In fact, women are not mentioned in the bill at all. Not once, nada, zilch - despite the government insisting it will restore public confidence in the justice system. How, exactly, when 55,000 women reported rape last year and just 1,800 prosecutions took place - and that’s still not enough to warrant specific policies in the very bill that would make a difference?

Instead, we’re told that undercover officers will now patrol bars and clubs. No offence, but deploying a nocturnal army of unidentifiable police officers in the immediate aftermath of a woman’s suspected murder by an off-duty police officer is laughable at best, dystopian at worst. What next: liaison officers in changing rooms? Flying squad following us home? Can the government really not think of better ways to use the money they’ll have to shell out on Becks Blue?

Supervised socialising leaves the root causes of male violence - the clue’s in the name - against women and girls unchallenged. Women don’t need DIs lurking around dance floors. We need a male issue to stop being framed as our problem.

We need empathy, respect and consent to be taught effectively in classrooms and boys given the same emotional encouragement as girls.

We need a legal system that takes women’s experiences seriously, and a new social dialogue that focuses as much on how to prevent male violence in the first place, as protecting women and girls from its worst effects. Fires aren’t put out by soaking the building next door.

No one will forget what happened to Sarah Everard, or at her vigil. What happens next depends on us all.

She was just walking home.

I had to move out of Southwark because I was homeless and pregnant. I was told I could be put in temporary housing but would cost me £900 a month in a B&B and be so far out of London and away from my support network. The only place I could find to live was in Northumberland. At the time I was working full time but no way possible could afford the B&B and any things for my child. Letter to the editor Dear Editor, Like millions of Londoners, my thoughts are with Sarah Everard’s family and loved ones at this time.

The stark and wholly unacceptable reality is that women and girls are routinely subject to abuse and violence, and often have to take an exhaustive list of precautions against this in their daily lives.

Let’s be clear, if we are to address the sheer scale of this problem, the onus needs to put upon men to change their behaviour. This is why, as a first step towards this, I am backing calls for misogyny to be made a hate crime.

As a further step, the Government must also introduce a Domestic Abusers’ Register- something that the London Assembly has long been campaigning for.

What happened at the vigil in Clapham has rightly caused a great deal of concern. There are now a number of enquiries that will get to the bottom of the issues.

We must now see a step change in how our society, education system and the police tackles violence against women and girls.

Low vaccine take-up in some areas and by certain groups is a cruel twist in Southwark’s COVID-19 journey

n many ways Southwark had had a head start on the vaccine rollout. As one of the first boroughs to be hit by the virus’ widespread transmission, and routinely having one of the country’s highest rates of infection in the first few weeks of the pandemic, public health officials knew the borough was vulnerable to subsequent waves and had a large ‘at risk’ population.

COVID-19 had also highlighted the ‘health inequalities’ - or differences in life expectancy and health overall, but also risk to new threats like viruses - that already existed in such a densely populated, inner London area.

Right from the beginning of the pandemic it was obvious that families living in overcrowded housing and frontline workers, carers and people scraping a living on low pay couldn’t avoid - or couldn’t afford to avoid - the virus.

It is a cruel twist that many of these groups most at risk are now those more likely to refuse a jab. The data, showing the huge disparity between uptake in Dulwich Village versus Peckham is stark - and really quite frightening.

The council and local clinical commissioning group has worked hard to encourage eligible people to say yes to vaccinations, and to ensure people without internet access or those who are disabled or housebound do get jabs.

Even if this hasn’t run as smoothly as we would have liked, there is no doubt that the local response has been a huge effort - with limited funding.

But this work has been jeopardised by lack of financial support from central government, misinformation spreading easily online, the shocking vaccine disputes taking place between the UK and EU, and conflicting reports in international media about vaccine safety. It is also hampered by people who spread misinformation and fear closer to home, among their community and family.

The evidence is clear that the vaccine - whichever you have - is safe and effective. But this isn’t getting through fast enough.

As much as some people would like to see Cabinet Ministers hung, drawn and quartered we know it’s against the law and wouldn’t want to be banged up for a large portion of our lives for that guilty pleasure, but there is ample fun to be had by catching those that killed off MPs, writes Michael Holland.

Versatile themes within a 1797 poem by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe are creatively adapted, bringing audiences this online musical version of Richard Hough’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, which was filmed at Southwark Playhouse, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor.

Climate change is explored in this musical delight by cleverly utilising magician Johan Gottel (David Thaxton) and his rebellious daughter, Eva(Mary Moore) to dramatise environmental urgency by inviting us into Midgard, a town overlooked by the Northern Lights, with the only hope being a magical spell.

Ominously dark staging alerts viewers to imminent danger, the majestic lights are fading, drained by endlessly supplying the town’s energy. Refusing to acknowledge the perilous situation is the dastardly, and rich, Fabian Lyddecker (Marc Pickering), who is intent on progress and profits. A cast of labouring mine workers in flat caps and braces resemble a chain gang.

Magician Johan expresses his despair in song as the Northern Lights lose their luminosity, while unable, though, to acknowledge

them if you do. It is not elementary but it is exciting. There is a frisson amongst the team each time another penny drops; a sense of power when you get to interrogate the suspects; pleasure to be had from good teamwork, and even more satisfaction when you find you have solved the case correctly - Which not all teams do. But not finding the guilty party would just entice me back

in to catch the bounder, even if to buy him or her a large whisky.

A good amount of general knowledge is required, because without it you’ll be floundering amongst the evidence and leaving your dunce fingerprints everywhere.

The Olivier-nominated creators of Alice’s Adventures Underground, Les Enfant Terribles, have created an innovative and immersive online adventure that blurs the lines between theatre, gaming, escape room and board game. Sherlock Holmes: An Online Adventure - The Case of the Hung Parliament.

Once the ‘Detectives’ have logged in to Zoom, the legendary - and hilariously comical - Doctor Watson informs us that The Home Secretary, The Foreign Secretary and the Lord Chamberlain, have all been found dead in their own chambers, and that each victim died on their birthday after receiving a card with a mysterious quote written in it.

But what does this mean? It means that the Prime Minister is next and we have 75 minutes to catch the killer and save the PM. We are given the names and backgrounds of the five suspects, who all have a reason to take out these corrupt politicians, but our job is to check out the murder scenes for clues with immersive 360 technology and put our heads together to deduce the method, motive and, of course, the murderer of these dastardly crimes.

The pared-down sets remind us to focus on what’s at stake, to listen to lyrics telling of greed, warning, separation, love, hope, and reunion, all of which are witnessed in the magical number, Spellbound, with its enchanting dance of brooms and puppetry.

Despite good versus evil threads, the musical delves deeper, exploring issues of division between characters.

Their warring adds tension, blocking the very light they strive to see restored. As Eva sings her heart out for fatherly recognition, his distrust in her capabilities delays her journey as magician’s apprentice. Luckily her determination pushes through. After all, Midgard needs their combined magical input to save light and keep the town thriving.

Definitely worth catching this magical musical and its interesting take on an important issue.

Crossbones saved - a tribute to our poorer ancestors John Constable aka-Crow-at-Crossbones The future of the Crossbones Graveyard and memorial garden in Southwark has recently become more secure, after local community group Bankside Open Spaces Trust gained a 30-year rolling lease last week - but its past remains more uncertain, writes Kit Heren...

What is known about Crossbones, tucked away between Redcross Street and Union Street, is that it was a graveyard for poor people from at least 1769. It was closed in the 1850s because of overcrowding.

About 140 years later, when Transport for London (TfL) was excavating to develop a new electricity substation for the Jubilee Line extension in the late 1990s, Museum of London archaeologists came across the bones of nearly 150 people. The archaeologists thought there were likely to be many more people buried at the site - up to

15,000.

It was clearly a graveyard for the poor people of the area. More than 40 per cent of the skeletons belonged to stillborn children or babies under 11 months old, suggesting a very high infant mortality rate for the area. Some 60 per cent of bones unearthed had signs of some kind of infection. Nearly half of the people found at the site had osteoarthritis, and there were higher rates of other back conditions.

Many people, including the local writer and mystic John Constable, who leads the Friends of Crossbones Graveyard group, have linked the Crossbones Graveyard with an unconsecrated burial ground described by the 16th century historian John Stow.

The area now called Bankside had more relaxed rules on brothels and theatres, meaning many prostitutes

lived and worked in the area. The neighbourhood was largely run by the Bishop of Winchester - but Stow said that despite this, sex workers were not allowed to have a Christian burial.

That meant that they had to be buried in unconsecrated ground - what Stow called “a single woman’s churchyard”.

It is not clear that this was Crossbones.

Historian Steph Bern wrote in a 2016 paper on the graveyard that “most nineteenth-century records identify Crossbones as the unconsecrated burial ground for medieval prostitutes” described by Stow.

But “archaeologists’ excavations could not confirm or deny the presence of the medieval graveyard,” she added.

Perhaps the question of whether the graveyard was the “single woman’s churchyard” identified by Stow is not the most important. What is clear is that the former paupers’ graveyard

has become a place of great emotional value and symbolism for many local people and other visitors.

Campaigners, including Constable, have transformed the site over the past 25 years, adding the memorial garden next door in 2015. Constable, under the persona of John Crow, led commemorative vigils at the gates of the graveyard every month.

People also adorned the gates of the graveyard with ribbons, part of what archaeologist Don Henson called the “active commemoration” of the prostitutes who may or may not be buried at the site.

“HMS Belfast and Southwark Cathedral have associations who support the work of those sites, but the heritage narrative is controlled by the owners of each site,” he wrote in the 2014 book Who Needs Experts?

“At Crossbones there is no site

ownership or even management; there are merely acts of commemoration. As a result, Crossbones is the most affective [sic] heritage site in Southwark, even if it is the least recognised, least designated and least like a heritage asset.

“It is the one place in the area where purely local significance is really evoked, and where the lives of people in the past can be celebrated and remembered. Without physical structures to distract the mind, it can be a site of quiet contemplation and communion with past people.”

That sense of communion may have felt under threat at some points in the past 25 years, with concerns that the site could be developed into housing. The recent news that TfL and housebuilders U+I have committed to giving BOST a rolling 30-year lease eliminates that threat for now.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk CHRIS KONGO wants to show he’s the “best and smartest” welterweight in the UK when he aims to extend his perfect professional record on the Alexander Povetkin-Dillian Whyte 2 undercard in Gibraltar this Saturday.

Bermondsey’s ‘2Slick’ Kongo has won all twelve bouts in his career and faces another unbeaten fighter, Portsmouth’s Michael McKinson (19-0) at the Europa Point Sports Complex.

Former Fisher amateur Ted Cheeseman (16-2-1) is also on the bill – The Rumble on the Rock – as he fights Liverpool’s unbeaten James Metcalf, 32, (21-0) for the vacant BBBofC British superwelterweight title.

Kongo is defending the WBO Global welterweight title he won by defeating Luther Clay at Matchroom’s Fight Camp in Brentwood last August when he faces McKinson, 26.

“I’m the underdog in this fight,” Kongo said in his pre-fight press conference.

“I’ll win it. I’ve got a better skillset, I’m stronger, a lot faster and it’s all about being smart in the ring and I believe I’m the best and the smartest in the UK – period.

“The Kongo-McKinson story began when we sparred three years ago, only the one spar, he didn’t come back after that.

“I’ve got the big platform and I’ve got

the title now – he’s got no more titles.

He’s looking for the opportunity, so he’s coming to me. My focus is still the same, getting to the top and trying to get rid of McKinson.

“I’ve been sparring top fighters, a guy (Josh Taylor) that’s going on to become undisputed champion of the world. I can’t get any better preparation than that, so I’m fully ready and focused.

“To be able to spar a world champion before I go into a British level fight is wicked. It’s going to up my game and it has. I’ve been able to feel it, I’ve seen it. I feel a lot better and I feel a lot sharper.

“A lot of people are mentioning me in the mix with the likes of Conor Benn and Josh Kelly, now it’s my time to put my stamp on the division.

“I believe I am the best in the UK. Now it’s my time coming up, and I believe right now is the worst time to fight me.

“Michael McKinson, I’m bringing fireworks and I’m bringing the heat so make sure you’re ready.”

Cheeseman is fighting to regain the title he lost to Scott Fitzgerald in October 2019, his second defeat in three bouts as he went through recovery for a gambling addiction.

After winning the first fifteen fights of his professional career, those two defeats came either side of a drawn contest against Kieron Conway in a difficult year.

Cheeseman got his career back on track when he defeated Sam Eggington for the IBF international super-welterweight title in Brentwood last August.

Cheeseman has no doubt what and who he’s fighting for this weekend.

“When you have a kid your life changes,” Cheeseman told Matchroom Boxing. “It’s hard, but it makes me the man that I am.

My baby, when he’s 20 years of age his friends will go, ‘How about The Rumble on the Rock?’

“He can say, ‘my dad fought on that show’. It’s things like that, being part of history, you can say, ‘I did it, I was there’.

“For me, regaining the British title will be a massive part of my recovery. When I lost the British title it was when I was at the start of my recovery coming out of rehab.

“Now, life’s back in order, I got my win last year against Eggington. I’ve got a lovely family. I can’t wish for much more other than getting that British title back.

“That would be the icing on the cake.”

Southwark Aquatics swimmers ready to dive back in

By Sports Reporter sport@southwarknews.co.uk SOUTHWARK AQUATICS chairman Andy Moore said the club is “ready to go again” as plans are put in place for a return to training.

With best practices established, socially distanced training is due to recommence on Monday, April 12.

Each lockdown has resulted in the club losing some swimmers as their focus has moved elsewhere and their desire to swim has waned.

Moore said: “This is such a shame, we work hard to bring swimmers into the club, and to lose swimmers due to the pandemic is hugely frustrating.

“However, we’re ready to go again, and believe that our club offers swimmers

a great opportunity to develop their swimming technique and compete at the highest levels.”

When swimmers return they will have lots of hard work ahead of them to regain their fitness. Some swim six times a week and being denied that has affected both their physical and mental wellbeing.

Head coach, Mackinh Tran, added: “The coaching team is preparing a plan to bring swimmers’ fitness back to pre-lockdown levels before focusing on returning to competitions later in the year.

“We are all looking forward to the resumption of swimming galas, the excitement and fun of competition weekends, and most of all to seeing our members back doing what they love.”

Highlighting how much swimmers have missed their time at the club, club captain

Finn Ashworth said: “It’s exciting that we’ll be back at swimming soon, it’s been a while since we’ve had the opportunity to swim. It’s great to be able to go back to swimming to have fun, develop skills, and exercise.”

In 2021, the club is aiming to generate the revenues it needs to survive and grow.

They are working to develop relationships with local businesses, as obtaining local support and sponsorship is key to the club’s survival.

The club is also getting involved in establishing and strengthening paraswimming opportunities in Southwark.

Sport and leisure are key to the wellbeing of everyone and Southwark Aquatics is striving to be inclusive to all who love the sport.

The club has survived the pandemic after an exceptionally tough last twelve months and they are looking towards a brighter future.

They are urging people to get involved, whether joining as a swimmer or helping to raise funds through donations or advertising opportunities. The club want to offer “competitive swimming in a warm, friendly environment, accessible to everyone in the local community”.

By Sports Reporter sport@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL LIONESSES manager Katie Whitmore is delighted to be preparing her side for match action again after the club announced a number of friendlies following the curtailment of their ERWFL Division One South season due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Lionesses will play behindclosed-doors fixtures against Hackney Lionesses, Upton Park Ladies, Kent Football United and Billericay Town Women Reserves.

“I think it has been a tough time at the moment with the stop-start to the season and having everyone going back into the lockdown, but with the games that we have got organised I think it’s a good challenge for the girls,” Whitmore said.

“It’ll be great to get them out playing in that match-day environment again and though they are behind closed doors, I’m sure the girls will really want to come back and put a performance on for everyone.

“I think it’s really important to have a variety of games. Yes, the majority of them are at home at St Paul’s, which is obviously great for us to be playing our games where we train, but to have that big clash away at Kent Football United, I think it’ll be a challenging fixture.

“One being it’s away from home and the other being the team we are playing against, but ultimately it means that [Lionesses assistant manager] Alex Russell and I are able to move players around and move

the squad around, be able to try new things that we want to try and hopefully get a great result.

“It’ll really challenge us as management too, to be able to push our squad to its full potential.

“During this period of friendlies, as a manager I really want to see the players show that they have missed the game. It has been a hard time being in lockdown, and everyone has had to adapt to it, but I really want to see the girls take player ownership, take accountability, show how they have improved as players and also show they want to be part of the squad and play for the Lionesses.

“The support that the fans have shown online during the lockdown has been fantastic, with all the work that the Lionesses have been doing off the field during this time.

“Like Kelly Webster, who is a great role model, with the Lions Food Hub, the Santa Dash that we did at Christmas and also we are now currently doing a charity run (virtual Ready for the Euros event for the Millwall Community Trust).

“There’s been a lot of work that’s gone on behind the scenes, both by players and backroom staff and the support we have had from fans on social media has been massive. I can’t thank them enough as a manager.

“It’s a shame that the games are going to be played behind closed doors, but I know full well that both Alex and I, as well as the rest of the squad, will make sure we put on a performance for them and hopefully get the results that the fans will want to see.”

Excitement builds as Oval hosts training ahead of season

By Sports Reporter sport@southwarknews.co.uk CRICKET RETURNED to the square in the middle of The Kia Oval this week as Surrey’s men’s squad played an internal training match on a cut strip.

The two-day match saw the available players split into two teams, with one side batting throughout Day 1 and another on Day 2.

Each day lasted 60 overs with bowling spells carefully considered in order to ensure bowlers are at the right fitness levels for the start of the LV= County Championship on April 8.

Bowling for Team Patel on the first day were the likes of Jamie Overton, Gus Atkinson, Ryan Patel, James Taylor, Daniel Moriarty, Rikki Clarke and academy player Nathan Barnwell, who had five overs during the second session.

The side they came up against included Mark Stoneman, Jamie Smith, Will Jacks, Jordan Clark, Liam Plunkett and academy batsmen Ben Geddes and George Ealham.

The roles were switched on Day 2

with Conor McKerr, Matt Dunn, Clark, Plunkett and Jacks all leading the attack against a batting line-up with many of the players above and Nico Reifer.

The Surrey players involved in England’s recent Test series with India did come to The Kia Oval for training but did not take part in the match.

Surrey’s two overseas players, Hashim Amla and Kemar Roach, and the four players in England’s white ball squad are not currently in the country.

The players ramp up their preparations next week when Sussex visit The Kia Oval for a two-day friendly on March 29 and 30 before a three-day match with Middlesex between April 2-4.

They will then travel to Bristol for the LV= County Championship with Gloucestershire on April 8.

The fixtures are behind closed doors but members can now book tickets free of charge for Surrey’s two home matches in May in line with government guidelines.

Meanwhile, Surrey Women will

defend their title in a revamped 50-over London Championship competition this summer against their locals rivals in county cricket.

Hannah Jones’ side will begin the year with a Vitality Women’s T20 competition in late April and May before the 50-over London Championship takes over in June.

In the London Championship, Surrey will face Kent, Essex, Middlesex and, for the first time, Sussex.

Domestic women’s cricket has undergone a major change in recent years due to the introduction of regional sides, representing centres of excellence around the country.

South East Stars cover Surrey and Kent at that level, now considered the elite standard of domestic women’s cricket in England and Wales.

In order to ensure traditional counties still have meaningful cricket and to aid development for talented players, the London Championship was created in 2020.

Sussex have entered the competition this year to provide more competitive cricket for counties in the South East of England.

But while Millwall’s top-six chances are all but over, with a ten-point gap to sixthplaced Reading, Gary Rowett’s team aren’t performing like a side that are desperate for their summer holidays to come.

They appear keen on securing a second consecutive top-half finish - which would be the first time they achieved that feat at this level since 2004-05, when they managed four in a row.

Millwall conceded 45 goals that season, and if they defend anything like they did against promotion-chasing Middlesbrough, they’ll have every chance of bettering that figure.

Only the top three sides have conceded fewer than the Lions this season.

Although much of the second period last Saturday was played in Millwall’s half, Bart Bialkowski – who is now just one clean sheet away from equalling his total from last season of sixteen which earned him the Golden Glove, shared with Brentford’s David Raya – was only called into action on two occasions, and George Saville and Paddy McNair’s efforts were bread and butter for the former Ipswich goalkeeper.

It wasn’t like Boro carved out several chances that missed the target. The Lions were mean at the back, though Yannick Bolasie getting an opportunity with a scuffed first-half effort was a rare exception.

Millwall’s impressive defensive effort contrasted with their sloppy display at QPR three days earlier when Rowett’s men

collapsed in the second half and would have let in five or six on another day had it not been for some poor Rangers finishing.

On that occasion, two wasn’t enough for the Lions, but Grant Hall’s 31st-minute own goal was sufficient this time.

The unconventional front two of Jed Wallace and Mason Bennett are developing a real understanding, and it was no surprise that Millwall’s winner would arrive through one of those two.

Bennett had put Wallace in the clear with a sumptuous defence-splitting pass earlier only for Marcus Bettinelli to tip around the post.

Then after Billy Mitchell won the ball back in midfield he immediately set Wallace away down the left. Wallace put on the afterburners, leaving Johnny Howson for dead before putting a delivery into that corridor of uncertainty - so good, Hall couldn’t help turning the ball into his own net from almost under his own crossbar.

Had the Middlesbrough man not diverted past his own keeper, Bennett would have tapped in for his sixth league goal of the season. Instead, it was the third own goal for the Lions this campaign, and with their struggles up front, O.G. is their joint-fourth top scorer.

It was a goal that Millwall deserved after they were bright in the first half and despite a poor pitch the hosts played some lovely football in midfield. Wallace put Danny McNamara - back in the side for Mahlon Romeo - away down the insideright but the wing-back flashed a shot just wide of the far post.

The only cause for concern at the break for Rowett was that his side weren’t further ahead, especially knowing Neil Warnock still had the likes of Ashley Fletcher and Duncan Watmore at his disposal.

But despite an unhappy Warnock

changing his entire front three by the start of the second half, Middlesbrough were unable to put a blot on Millwall’s clean sheet.

It was no great surprise that the Lions looked far more organised with Murray Wallace back in the team. The Scot has only recently returned from a long-term injury, but he showed few signs of rustiness.

Having Shaun Hutchinson and Jake Cooper either side of him certainly didn’t hurt.

While Millwall were pinned back for most of a tetchy second 45 minutes, they couldn’t have been accused of not looking for that second goal.

Late on, when the Lions were under the cosh, Cooper bellowed: “Not too deep lads, we need to get a second here.”

That second had almost arrived moments earlier, but Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, enduring a wretched campaign in front of goal – just one in 42 games in all competitions – lashed towards the target but couldn’t beat Bettinelli, who acrobatically denied him a first since December.

It mattered little, though, as Millwall held on to ensure it was another productive afternoon in SE16. This was their fourth home league success already in 2021, only one fewer than they managed throughout the whole of 2020.

And though the back five will get the plaudits for their late heroics, the performance of nineteen-year-old Mitchell would have been worth the admission fee alone, had there been supporters inside The Den. Billy The teenager has Mitchell was endured a stopoutstanding start campaign, including two

long-term injuries, but get a quick glimpse of the boyhood Lions fan and you’ll quickly see what the fuss is about.

Only Hutchinson, who had 80, recorded more touches than the midfielder (65) for Millwall, while his 33 accurate passes, twelve recoveries of the ball, seven duels won, and four clearances were impressive numbers for someone who turns 20 next month and who was making just his fourth league start.

With Shaun Williams now focusing more on the coaching side of the game, and Ryan Woods no guarantee to be back in Millwall colours next season, it really does feel like this is Mitchell’s time to shine.

Big guns hold no fear for boss Millwall tackle their toughest month of the season after break EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL MANAGER Gary Rowett is backing his team to rise to the challenge when they face four of the current top seven Championship sides in April.

After games against Rotherham and Stoke, the Lions play Swansea, Brentford, Bournemouth and Watford before going into the final two matches of their season in May. On paper it looks like one of the toughest months of the season, but Rowett’s side have played ten games against the top seven and lost just twice.

They held leaders Norwich to two goalless draws and only lost to Swansea and Barnsley, both away from home.

Millwall could still reach the 68 points they accumulated last season.

That’s a big ask, though, as they would have to claim sixteen points from their remaining eight games.

Of those games, only Bristol City have little left to play for, but this Millwall side have shown that they are often better against teams who are still chasing something tangible in the league.

Their last two defeats came against

QPR and Blackburn, both safe in midtable.

Millwall passed the 50-point mark with their win over Middlesbrough at The Den last Saturday “When you’re a club like us it’s always good to get those points in the bag early, it’s always good to be in this position in the league with a real opportunity to see if we can kick on,” Rowett said.

“The main thing is we always knew that on paper April looked a really challenging month. But, we’ve tended to raise our game.

“We’ve drawn against Bournemouth, against Watford, we’ve drawn against Norwich twice, drawn against Brentford.

“So we’re certainly not fearful of any of these types of games.

“But of course we know they’ll be tough and we’ll be playing against teams that will be desperately needing the points to satisfy their own ambitions.

“We’ll give it our best shot and look forward to the month.”

Only the top three teams – Norwich (27), Watford (26) and Swansea (29) – have conceded fewer goals than Millwall (36) in the Championship this season.

Rowett added: “We’ve spoken about it a lot last season and this year that you have to have that solidity. If you look at the three teams that have got a better

defensive record than us they’re the top three teams.

“That tells you a lot about the balance required to be a good team.

“The difference is all of those teams have scored maybe ten more goals, which is a big thing.”

Key to Millwall’s form in this year has been the new strike partnership of Jed Wallace and Mason Bennett who have scored seven league goals between them in 2021.

It has meant the Lions have played without a natural target man, but Rowett

insisted that hasn’t been a problem.

“I think we’re a team that needs to adjust tactically against different teams just to find an answer,” Rowett said.

“I don’t think we’re the kind of team that can go out there and play our own game every match and expect to win and get results.

“You’re always adjusting little bits. We had a spell with a bit more physicality in those forward areas, though you can argue that Mason has been as physical as any of the strikers we’ve played up there, won just as many aerial duels.

“We’re always looking at different ways to try to create opportunities. With the likes of Jed up there you can work on different ways to try to build. Drop into areas that defenders might not want to go and defend against him in because he’s obviously got that ability to do that and then make the run forward for his chance against Boro.

“We’ve not had the chance to work on loads of things anyway, I don’t think any team has. We’re always adjusting the patterns we try to play to, to create chances.”

Winger makes competitive return in under-23 draw

CONNOR Mahoney made his latest comeback from injury in Millwall’s 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest in their Professional Development League game on Monday.

Another senior player, Tyler Burey, also started and he scored in the 20th minute to put Kevin Nugent’s side ahead at Notts County’s Meadow Lane.

Julian Larsson equalised from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage-time as the Lions drew consecutive games.

Mahoney played the first half as he aims for senior involvement next month for the first time since November.

Striker George Alexander was back on the bench after completing a threematch suspension.

Millwall remain in sixth place in the Professional Development League South, five points off the play-off places with six matches remaining.

“It was a really competitive game from both sides,” Nugent said. “They were on top in the first part of the game, but then we grew into it and had a couple of opportunities before scoring with a good goal from Tyler.

“Just before half-time, they won a slightly dubious penalty and then were on top after the break, but again, we grew into things and possibly could have nicked it at the end.

“I thought a draw was a fair result,

though. The lads showed really good character after conceding right before half-time.”

Nugent was able to name a stronger side, with Hayden Muller and Junior Tiensa – who have been involved with

the first team – also in the line-up.

The under-23s haven’t won in nine games, though injuries to the senior squad has meant the likes of Burey and Tiensa being required for the match-day bench for Rowett’s side.

Nugent has also missed key players.

He said: “We picked up a few injuries along the way and had to change shape a couple of times, so overall it was a pleasing performance.

“We had a bit of a dip in form prior to the last two games, but I feel like we’re getting back into things now and producing some good performances.

“We’ve just got to start turning them into wins and points.”

Millwall travel to Colchester United this Friday (March 26). Mahoney is scheduled to play for an hour in that game.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IF THE next generation of Millwall youngsters want some inspiration as they try to force their way into the first-team reckoning they don’t have too far to look.

When the News phoned Danny McNamara on Tuesday afternoon he had just returned from the training ground – despite the first-team squad being given a few extra days off during the international break.

But that’s typical of McNamara, and of his team-mate Billy Mitchell, with manager Gary Rowett often referencing the youngsters’ attitudes and work ethic.

McNamara doesn’t want to let this opportunity slip. His loan at St Johnstone earlier this season was his fifth – after spells at Welling United, Dover, Havant & Waterlooville and Newport County – and he would encourage any young player to follow the same route.

That’s National League South to National League, and League Two to the Scottish Premiership, all with the goal of a Championship debut, which he achieved in January.

As well as playing senior football, McNamara, 22, moved away from home for the first time to live in Wales and then Scotland.

But he does admit that going to former Millwall assistant Callum Davidson’s Saints had an element of last-chance-saloon about it to prove to Rowett he was ready for Millwall’s first team.

“Yeah, kind of,” McNamara says.

“I was a little bit anxious, nervous because I knew I had to do well up there. If I hadn’t done well I think my time at Millwall would have come to an end.

“Maybe not, maybe I’m wrong, but that’s the way I felt. Doing so well there boosted my chances of coming back and fighting for a position in the team.

“When I was up there it just got to a point where I was enjoying my football, enjoying playing how I usually play. It felt good to be out there.

“The way I’ve done it just shows you how loan spells can really help your career. I can’t stress enough to younger players coming through that if you’re not in and around the first team just go out and get games.

“Under-23s football is very good to a certain point, but then you’ve got to go, ‘right, I need to go out and play men’s games’.

“You need to get noticed and show you can play at that level just like I did.

“All you experience off the pitch helps you on the pitch, helps you become more of a man and more mature.

“When you’re around senior players you mature quicker and it all helps you out massively on the pitch.”

McNamara made his senior Millwall debut in the 2-0 FA Cup third-round win at Boreham Wood in January and then started the next six games, keeping Mahlon Romeo out of the team.

Romeo then returned and grabbed his chance as he started the next ten games, before McNamara was recalled last weekend and was part of a back five that kept a fifteenth clean sheet in the league this season.

It’s set to be a ding-dong battle between the right-sided defenders for the rest of the season.

“I was buzzing to get the call to go back in. I’d been out of the team for a few games but that’s just squad rotation,” McNamara says.

“Mahlon came in and did really well to earn his place back in the team. I’ve been working hard and I was happy to go back in on Saturday.

“I tried to give it my all and hopefully I can maintain it and keep my position.

“Seeing Millwall doing well is everything I want. I’m a Millwall fan so I know how much our performances and results mean to supporters.

“When I’m on the pitch I try to give it my all. And when I was on the bench I wanted the team to do well and get as many points as we could.

“I knew I was going to play against Boreham Wood but no matter how well I played I didn’t think I’d start the game against Bournemouth and then keep my place in the team.

“To do that was a proud moment for me and something I’ve worked so hard for. Hopefully I can have many more moments like that to come.

“Mahlon is a class right-back, he’s been at this club so long now and he’s experienced at this level. It shows how good of a pro he is when he came back in after being out of the team for seven games. He took his opportunity and kept me out of the team.

“It’s good to have healthy competition.”

McNamara and Mitchell are both on long-term deals and are set to be cornerstones of the side if they continue to progress and fulfil their obvious talent.

“I texted him after the game, I was buzzing that we’d been on the pitch together,” McNamara adds. “We’ve both come through at similar times, he’s a bit younger than me.

“To be on the pitch together showed how far we’d come and how hard we’d worked. I thought Billy did really well Saturday. “[Under-18 managers] Larry McAvoy, Chris Perry and [head of academy] Scott Fitzgerald improved me so much as a player and it’s paid off now, I’ve got my chance in the first team.

“We’re the youth coming through and we want to be in the first team, be regular starters and push the club on.

“The future is looking bright for the club.

“We don’t want to look down below

The Lions duo came through the youth system us, we want to look above us. ‘Little Millwall’ people look at us as, we’re not the favourites [in most games] but we have the ability to finish in the top half of the table.

“That’s where we want to be and looking up.

“Everyone I’ve spoken to hates coming to Millwall. With the atmosphere it’s a very hostile ground, when the fans are there.

“As players we can’t wait for them to return. Especially me, I can’t wait to see a packed-out Den and hopefully being involved in it.

“That’s my dream.”

After last Saturday’s 1-0 win over Middlesbrough, Billy Mitchell’s phone pinged with a message from Danny McNamara to remind him it was the first time they’d started a senior game together.

Had Ben Thompson not been ill, then

almost a third of the Lions’ side may have been comprised of Millwall fans who came through the youth system.

It was just the fourth start of nineteenyear-old Mitchell’s career, yet he delivered a man-of-the-match performance against Neil Warnock’s promotion-chasers.

That was some going, given in the second half he was up against Millwall’s record sale, £8million George Saville.

While Mitchell was kept at Millwall, McNamara has been out on loan five times, progressing from National League to League Two and then the Scottish Premiership with St Johnstone.

If Rowett decides to give Hayden Muller more senior game-time, or hand a debut to the likes of talented youth player Abdul Abdulmalik near the end of the season, then Lions fans could see almost half a team containing home-grown players.

“It’s fantastic,” Mitchell told the News.

“Danny McNamara actually texted me after the game the other day because I think it was the first time we’d started together in the same team.

“For us it’s an absolute dream come true. To do it together – it was a shame Thommo was ill because perhaps he would have been in the team as well – is a lovely thing. All of us have come through the academy.

“It was a special moment and we played pretty well as well so hopefully we can start to nail down those starting spots.

“When someone gets recalled from St Johnstone you know they’re not being

brought back not to challenge for their place.

“Everyone was aware of how much it meant to Dan and the quality and attributes he has.

“He’s a prime example of how well the loan system can work. He went to Welling, Dover, Newport and St Johnstone. He did it absolutely perfectly and I’m really happy for him that he’s now moved up the levels.

“I’m not surprised. I’ve seen Dan’s attributes. He’s athletic, he’s aggressive, he’s quite good in the air for his size and he’s got bundles of energy as well. He’s only going to add to that.

“It’s great for Mahlon [Romeo] as well to have that competition. We’re blessed to have two really good right-backs.

“A loan was spoken about briefly for me, but I think the gaffer was always insistent that it would have to be right and at the right level.

“They didn’t want me to go on loan somewhere where perhaps I wasn’t going to play or at a level slightly too low where I wasn’t going to benefit then coming back to Championship level.

“Towards the end of last season I was so close to getting into the team. It’s all worked out now, thank God.” Mitchell covered 11.2km against Boro, above the average for a player in the Championship. The midfielder’s progress this season is all the more remarkable after he twice badly tore his hamstring and only made his first appearance of

2020-21 in February.

Mitchell explained how he coped when he suffered that second injury in an under-23 game as he made his way back towards first-team contention, and during his recovery.

“I was devastated because you know it’s going to entail the same few months of rehab and you’re going to have to go through everything you’ve gone through before,” Mitchell said.

“But at the same time I’ve got great people around me. The physios are excellent and played a big part in getting me back to full fitness now where I’m able to play a few games in a week. I have to thank them.

“To be honest, I didn’t really do anything differently. You just learn which exercises you feel you get more benefit from. I had to be a bit more time-efficient in the gym.

“The first time around it’s a new process so you’re kind of learning. The second time you know your body much better.

That’s the only difference, I’d say.

“It was also a more graduated return to playing. I was more slowly reintroduced to game-time the second time.

“When I first got injured I think I was one of the only ones in there. But towards the end of my second injury the physio room was starting to get fuller.

“It’s not something you want to see because it means your team-mates are getting injured but I suppose from a personal perspective it is nice just to have some company. You can do the gym

sessions with someone else and you can drive each other to get fitter quicker.

“Physically I feel great, match fit, I feel like I can go for the full 90 minutes. Still technically I feel a little bit rusty in terms of how quickly I’m thinking. When you’re playing games week-in, week-out when you get the ball you already know what you’re going to do with it.

“At the moment I’m still finding that I’m leaving a little bit to be desired in that aspect. But that’s going to come with more game-time and naturally you get sharper.”

Mitchell celebrates his 20th birthday on April 7, five days too soon to potentially go out for a drink in the pub with the next step in Boris Johnson’s ‘roadmap’ out of lockdown allowing venues to serve drinks outdoors from April 12.

Not that Mitchell had the latter date pencilled in his diary.

“I’m not a massive party guy anyway, I like to keep things low-key,” Mitchell said. “I’m not sure what the rules will be come that day. Maybe I’ll be allowed a small dinner with family and friends, that would be nice.

“It’s crazy, the years from seventeen to 20 have just flown. When I first started joining in with the first team to now it feels like I’ve clicked my fingers and they’ve just disappeared.

“It does remind you you have to make the most of every day and I’m just excited to see what the next couple of years bring.”

Despite this campaign being over a month shorter than usual after the delayed end to 2019-20, Jed Wallace has started 36 league games out of 38, and Ryan Woods and Jake Cooper, 34 – the latter despite twice dislocating his shoulder.

Rowett said “there’s not a lot you can do” about the injuries in this campaign.

Five of the injuries that kept players out for over a month have been sustained in impacts: Cooper, Murray Wallace, Matt Smith (both suffered a broken foot) and Ryan Leonard and Troy Parrott (both ankle ligaments). The others were muscled-related injuries.

Millwall have one of the smallest squads of senior players in the Championship, yet are on course for consecutive top-ten finishes for the first time since 2005.

Rowett demanded a play-off challenge before the start of the campaign, but injuries to forward players in particular scuppered that.

Parrott and Kenneth Zohore were ambitious loan signings to try to solve the goal-scoring problems up front, but both strikers missed large chunks of the campaign.

“There’s not a lot you can do,” Rowett said. “We always felt as though we’d need more players this season because of the amount of games and the amount of injuries we thought we’d get.

define your success this year will depend on how healthy you can keep your squad and how many injuries you get to key players.

“My opinion is that’s really stopped us from pushing as hard as we’d like to for those top-six positions.

“But I think a lot of clubs have gone through it, not necessarily similar, but they’ve had more injuries than normal.

“Everybody knew this was going to be one of the gambles playing SaturdayTuesday-Saturday and not really having any breather or any chance for the players to recover naturally.

“The ones that have stayed fit have done remarkable to get this far. We just have to crack on but it has hampered a lot of things we’d like to have to done.”

It’s not yet out of the question this season, though with a tenpoint gap to sixth Millwall would have to win nearly all of their remaining games to have a chance.

Mitchell feels Millwall are “established” in the Championship after four consecutive seasons in the second tier, and they are on course for a third top-ten finish in the last four campaigns.

But with Mitchell and Danny McNamara breaking through to become regulars and with huge potential to improve, as well as Rowett’s determination to boost the attack this summer with new signings, the Lions are not far away from being regular promotion challengers.

“Although you’d say we are a pretty established Championship side now, for a club of our size a top-ten finish or a top-half finish is a good achievement,” Mitchell said.

“To do that more than once would be really good for the club, it shows that we’re pretty established.

“But since Gary Rowett’s come in he’s definitely changed that mindset of just wanting to be happy with a top-ten finish.

“Now we look at it and think we really should be trying to push for those top-six positions.

“You’re always going to look back on games and think perhaps we could have done that better, but I do genuinely believe that with the squad we have we can achieve big things.

“Whether that’s a good push towards the end of this season or next season we’ll just have to see.”
