Southwark Council has pledged to improve standards in temporary accommodation - but its housing chief admits it is now very unlikely most people will be found homes in the borough.

There were more than 3,000 households living in temporary accommodation in Southwark at the end of 2020, desperately waiting for a permanent home. Since 2013 the number of homeless applications to the council has doubled.

At last week’s cabinet meeting at Tooley Street, councillors agreed to bring forward new plans that would help improve standards, and also provide more flexibility in a ‘range of locations’.

Key commitments include investing in

a ‘Good Homes Standard for Temporary Accommodation’, building on a previous commitment not to use B&Bs for families.

The new standards will help ensure housing is ready to move into and has essential white goods and other essentials, is clean and pest free, and a good size.

But the likelihood of being made offers in Southwark is increasingly diminishing due to widespread housing shortages and rising demand - and cost.

It is a familiar trend over the last few years.

In 2014, just over a quarter of temporary accommodation placements were outside the borough, a figure that stood at 42 per cent by 2018.

Expensive private rents across the borough have an impact, as does unemployment and COVID-19’s impact on job security and the economy.

The council also says Universal Credit has seen rent collections decline and therefore the number of private landlord willing to let via the council drop, and is struggling to find affordable locations anywhere in London.

Now the council wants to look even further afield, but says it will focus on diverse cities with employment opportunities that mirror Southwark’s social make-up.

“Where the council is procuring properties outside Greater London it will, as far as possible focus on more urban areas whose diversity so far as practicable reflects that of Southwark and so are likely to have more facilities and support networks for people from Southwark with particular protected characteristics,” new council papers explain.

“Evidence of the scope and range of employment opportunities will also be taken into account.”

Just how far away the ‘non outer London boroughs’ are in the country is unclear.

In January, at an overview and scrutiny commission meeting at Tooley Street, councillor Helen Dennis, cabinet member for social support and homelessness, had described the situation in the last year as “pretty bleak” and “a bit of a crisis” after the council overspent by nearly £9 million last year to help people who had become homeless or were in need of emergency support due to COVID-19.

Some funding will be recouped from government COVID-19 funding, but longterm the number of people in dire housing situations is set to only rise.

“Our ambition with the Good Homes Standard is to ensure that they move to a place of safety, warmth and comfort with their families whilst waiting to find a permanent home, long term.”

An extra £4 million has been put into the council’s 2021/22 budget toward temporary accommodation, both to improve standards but also to cope with surging homeless applications as a result of unemployment, furlough and redundancies during the pandemic.

Tooley Street says it is also taking action to fix the long-term cause of limited, affordable housing stock in the borough.

A new action plan to find suitable temporary accommodation in the borough include buying back 40 ex-council properties a year lost through right to buy, offering incentives for buying properties in a state of disrepair from private landlords and doing them up, and exploring modular homes essentially modern day prefabs.

Max Fosh, 25, uploaded a video to his 375,000 subscribers saying that he is officially standing as an independent candidate for the next Mayor of London.

Under the slogan, ‘Let’s turn London up to the Max’, Mr Fosh will be running against incumbent Sadiq Khan, Shaun Bailey of the Conservatives, Sian Berry of the Green Party and his new rival, the actor Laurence Fox. Laurence Fox made headlines in January 2020 after rowing with an audience member on Question Time. In September 2020, he launched the Reclaim political party to 'reclaim' British values from politicians, who he says have 'lost touch with the people.'

Londoners will have to wait two days to hear the results of the mayoral and assembly elections in May, the body running the poll has said.

London Elects said that votes will be counted the day after the election on Friday, May 7, and Saturday, May 8 to help vote counters stay socially distanced and safe from Covid-19.

Southwark’s votes will be counted on May 7 in the Excel centre. The results will only be declared when all of the votes are counted.

The Southwark News is proud to be the only independent, paid for newspaper in London Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

Just what would london’s skyline look like without foreign architects?

kit@southwarknews.co.uk London is often called a global city, and new research has illustrated how different the capital’s skyline would look without the work of foreign architects.

A study by financial services provider Remitly has shown the striking shift between London as we know it today, and how the city would look if only home-grown architects shaped our view of the capital.

Gone would be the Shard and the News building, both designed by Italian Renzo Piano, and One Canada Square and the Citigroup Centre in Canary Wharf, which were designed by Argentinian-American César Pelli.

Tower 42 and 20 Fenchurch Street - also known as the Walkie Talkie which are the visions of Swiss architect Richard Seifert and Uruguayan Rafael Vinoly respectively, would also be gone.

Of course, some might welcome a London skyline with fewer glass towers. Conservation group English Heritage criticised the original decision to give the Shard planning approval.

A spokesperson for the group said in 2011: “English Heritage is not against tall buildings, they are a part of London’s skyline.

“The existing skyline is a positive but vulnerable asset which deserves care and respect. It should be managed sensitively.

“Tall buildings should take into consideration the elements that create local character. Southwark deserves investment but it should not come at the expense of one of London’s most precious and finite assets - its heritage.”

Meanwhile the Walkie Talkie sparked fierce criticism for its controversial design and had to be reworked after it was completed in 2014, following complaints that its unusual curved shape had acted as a concave mirror, reflecting sunlight with such intensity that it melted bodywork on nearby cars.

Many of London’s best-known buildings are designed by British architects. St. Paul’s Cathedral was designed by Sir Christopher Wren, Big Ben by Augustus Pugin, the London Eye by Julia Barfield and David Marks, Tower Bridge by Sir Horace Jones and Buckingham Palace, by John Nash and Edward Blore.

Artist’s shout out for Camberwell Fundraisers say they feel overshadowed by Peckham and Brixton

The mural, which a mock-up shows could be a keyboard, would welcome people to the area as they came from neighbouring Peckham along the Peckham Road.

Local artist Lionel Stanhope is in line to do the painting. Stanhope has done several murals across Southwark and elsewhere in south London, including a painting for Millwall outside the club's stadium the Den last year.

The fundraiser is at £815 at the time of writing, £35 short of its £850 target with three weeks left. A representative of organisers SE5 Forum, Camberwell Society and Camberwell Arts said that the owners of the Piano Factory building have given permission for the artwork.

The mural is part of a larger project by the community groups to develop a “community identity” for Camberwell, which they feel can be overshadowed

by neighbouring Peckham and Brixton.

Last week the groups organised a butterfly mural on Butterfly Walk, paid for by the shopping centre owners MJW. The groups are also in talks to have murals painted in Wyndham Road and by the new entrance to the Denmark Hill railway station.

Other plans to foster community in Camberwell include banners on the main roads through the area and a travel guide, SE5 Forum member Marie Staunton told the News.

“We want to make everyone feel at home in the area,” she added.

“Camberwell is a very diverse part of London and we should be proud of that.”

Walworth regeneration could spell the end of at least one primary school

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk St John’s Church of England Primary is facing closure by September, with parents and staff given scant notice that their jobs and school places are on the line.

Shockingly, the News has also been told by local MP Neil Coyle that English Martyrs Roman Catholic Primary in nearby Flint Street has looked into the possibility of merging with St George’s RC School in Westminster Bridge Road.

Although the Roman Catholic diocese have yet to answer our inquiries.

The plans are a kick in the teeth for staff who have spent the last year trying to educate children in the most difficult circumstances since the Second World War. It is feared that finding new places at such short notice will be hugely disruptive to children’s education.

Although the governors at St John's have informed parents and staff of their decision to close down and have published full details on their website, plans for English Martyrs have so far remained hush-hush and no consultation has been launched.

The main reason for the closures are said to be a serious deficit in the schools’ finances due to declining pupil numbers - in an area that has lost family-sized social housing through the Heygate and Aylesbury regenerations.

Documents published by St John’s state a decision will be made by July 12, 2021, after a consultation period from March 15 to May 14.

It says the Walworth school has 220 places but only 144 are filled, creating a deficit of £350,000 for the next academic year.

“The impact of this is now felt in the school’s capacity to adequately staff and secure resources to ensure a high quality of education for all children attending the school," the papers outline.

“If the school were to remain open, a new, reduced staffing model would be required from September 2021 which the governing body felt would not enable children to continue receiving the high quality education they deserve and need."

This comes after Southwark Council has invested hundreds of millions into new schools in the borough, consistently saying pupil numbers are expected to rise, and has even drafted plans for two new primary schools and a new secondary in Old Kent Road, where 20,000 new homes will be built.

Although St John’s has told parents Southwark Council’s cabinet support the decision to close, and are responsible for the final approval to do so by a vote, Tooley Street has tried to distance itself from the move.

Councillor Jasmine Ali, cabinet member for children, young people and education, said: “Sadly, the issue of falling rolls and the decline in birth rate is a London phenomenon, not just a problem for schools in Southwark.

“The falling number of pupils has a direct impact on funding from central government, with fewer children, less money is provided to schools.

Neil Coyle “If schools have to close, we will step in with plenty of support for the parents and students, and all children would be offered a place in a Southwark school locally, 94 per cent of which are rated Good or Outstanding by Ofsted.

“The governors of this faith school have made a proposal for the school to close, and we await the outcome of their consultation.”

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle says the schools’ governing bodies have been influenced by a Southwark Council draft report, not publicly available, called “Approval for commencement of an informal consultation with schools, on Primary Reorganisation for September 2020”, which details schools with declining pupil numbers.

Coyle’s Freedom of Information requests to access the document have been declined due to being ‘not in the public interest’.

Separately, the News has been told more than a dozen schools across the borough have declining pupil numbers; begging the question: which schools are next?

Coyle says any evidence that numbers will decline long-term contradicts everything the council has shared until now about the need for more school places, especially in the Old Kent Road regeneration plans. It will also limit choice, cause upheaval, and leave dedicated staff in the lurch.

He told the News he would not hesitate to go to the Information

“It is extraordinary that information is being withheld from parents, staff, and MPs that impacts on families and children,” he said on Tuesday.

“This jigsaw is missing a lot of pieces. My concerns are about how information is coming out, and what is being withheld, when jobs are on the line and children’s education is at stake.”

If English Martyrs’ were to merge, travelling to St George’s from Walworth means driving into the congestion zone, or a longer journey by bus. It is unknown whether the governing body has looked at the possibility of simply closing one of the two English Martyrs sites, or mothballing one site, until pupil numbers rise once more.

Both English Martyrs and St John’s estates would certainly provide development opportunities - and once those buildings are lost, would likely never return into public use if they were sold off.

One resident who is very involved in the St John’s school community, who asked not to be named, said staff were in shock when they found out that next term could be their last.

“The students’ education has been disrupted so much during the pandemic and primaries especially are not set up to cope with home learning,” she said.

“Our head teacher had to do all the work himself to get laptops and help families without. He is quite a new head teacher in his first headship role and has been fantastic. He has been wonderful during the pandemic and has helped turn the school around.

“There is an oversubscribed, outstanding school over the road and that could be St John’s if they gave it a chance.

“The governors and council say they can’t meet the budget because of the falling roll, but it is the regeneration of the area that has seen families move out.”

She claims parents were told the day before half term, some of whom are considering places at English Martyrs - not realising it could also be axed too.

“I don’t think the council and the diocese understand what it’s like for families.

“St John’s has a majority of pupils who speak English as a second language and also pupil premiums.

“Some parents will be worried about having to buy a second uniform.

“Teachers and teaching assistants are going to be made redundant during a

pandemic.”

Ofsted inspectors downgraded the previously ‘outstanding’ St John’s to ‘requires improvement’ in 2018 after what inspectors described "a period of considerable turbulence’".

The report noted at the time: “Standards had fallen and governors decided to replace the headteacher.

“At the beginning of 2018, a part-time interim headteacher was appointed who began a program of rapid improvement.”

The Southwark Diocesan Board of Education, the body which runs Anglican faith schools in the borough, appeared to try to distance itself from the decision to close St John’s.

Questions from the News about how and why the decision had been reached, and what would happen to the school’s buildings, went unanswered.

A spokesperson simply said: “The decision to propose the consultation on school closure was made by the school’s governing body. We are supporting the school, parents and pupils in their next steps going forward.”

The Education Commission for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Southwark, responsible for RC faith schools in the borough, did not respond to our requests for comments on the proposed merger between English Martyrs and their cathedral school St George’s - and why parents had not been told this could be on the cards.

Two men found guilty of murdering drill rapper

Detectives say two other suspects have not yet been identified

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Two men have been found guilty of stabbing a ‘well-known drill rapper’ to death in Deptford.

Crosslon Davis was said to be a “highly regarded” drill artist who was a member of the Harlem Spartans, a well-known music collective primarily based in Kennington.

The twenty-year-old, known as Bis, suffered at least nine wounds to his head, back and chest when he was set upon by four youths armed with knives or machetes.

Most of the attack in early hours of December 6 2019 was caught on CCTV footage.

Elijah Morgan, 20, of no fixed address and Jedaiah Param, 21, of Norwood High Street, West Norwood, were found guilty on Friday, March 12, following a trial at the Old Bailey.

They will be sentenced at the same court on Friday, 26 March.

The court heard Morgan and Param were part of a gang of four young men armed with knives, who chased and then fatally stabbed 20-yearold Crosslon Davis in an alleyway in Deptford.

Analysis of mobile phone records showed that Crosslon arrived at Deptford Creek with a friend in the early hours of 6 December 2019.

Cell site data of mobile phones belonging to Morgan and Param showed they had arrived in the same area slightly earlier.

The pair were identified by homicide detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command through CCTV from a minicab that was called to pick them up at the scene.

The court heard the violent attack started after Morgan and Param got into the minicab and Crosslon attacked Morgan with a mallet.

The minicab drove away from the scene a short distance before the driver was told to stop and Morgan and Param got out and started chasing Crosslon.

CCTV footage from Ha’penny Hatch showed that Crosslon was pursued by the pair, as well as two other unidentified males, who were all armed with knives or machetes.

The court heard that all four of them stabbed Crosslon, who collapsed to the ground.

Crosslon’s friend had tried to place himself between him and the attackers, but he was overpowered.

Police said a number of local residents provided statements describing how they had

seen the group running after Crosslon.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene. Despite their efforts, Crosslon died a short time later due to the loss of blood from at least nine stab wounds, including one that penetrated his lung and heart.

Crosslon’s friend called 999 and initially stayed with him until the emergency services arrived. However, officers say he gave a false name at the scene and declined to give a witness statement, or help with the police investigation in any way.

Morgan was identified after a police officer recognised him from the minicab CCTV footage.

He was arrested at an address in Birmingham on 2 January.

Param, who was also identified via the minicab CCTV, was arrested at Dover Eastern Docks after he was found hiding underneath a coat in the back of a car as it went through passport control.

Both men declined to comment in police interviews and subsequently pleaded not guilty to murder.

Morgan’s defence during the trial was that he was wrongly identified.

Detective Chief Inspector Richard Vandenbergh, the lead investigator, said: “This was a savage and merciless attack. Crosslon was clearly running way from his attackers, who set upon him armed with large knives.

“The number of stab wounds sustained by Crosslon demonstrates the murderous intent of the four people who hunted him down.

“The lack of cooperation from a key witness in this case has made it more challenging for my team to investigate. However, I am proud of the meticulous and thorough analysis of CCTV and mobile phone records that has resulted in the guilty verdict for these two defendants.

"We know there are still two other people who took part in this attack who have not yet been identified. I urge anyone who knows who they are to contact police immediately.”

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Harriet Harman has called for kerb calling school girls to be made a legal offence, as parliament debated the controversial police and crime bill this week.

Although kerb crawling while soliciting paid-for sex is illegal, it is not an offence to kerb crawl young girls on their way to and from school.

Harassment is also only an offence against someone known to the perpetrator - and not a stranger - another amendment the Camberwell and Peckham MP hopes will crack down on misogyny and abuse.

She is also lobbying to stop a rape victim’s sexual history being examined in court; a change which could encourage more women to report rape to the police.

The new law, which passed its second reading in parliament on Tuesday, could introduce sweeping changes to policing and prosecutions.

Some changes have widespread backing, including banning sex between sports coaches and sixteen-year-old mentees, and introducing life sentences for some drivers who kill. It will also end automatic early releases for violent offenders. But, most controversially, the legislation imposes more restrictions on protests.

On Monday, after a meeting of the Criminal Justice Taskforce, the government also announced that along with more CCTV rollouts it will trial plain

clothes police officers patrolling clubs and bars in an effort to create more safe spaces for women.

The announcement came after sustained scrutiny of the police investigation into Sarah Everard’s disappearance, the Met’s response to a vigil held in her memory over the weekend, and an outpouring of personal stories from women who say not enough is being done to stop street harrassment and attacks.

Met Commissioner Cressida Dick has so far refused to buckle under pressure; ignoring calls for her resignation after officers were pictured pinning down women and dragging them away from the memorial to the 33-year-old in Clapham Common.

The vigil had been first been planned by campaigners from Reclaim These Streets, who had been disappointed by the Met’s refusal to work with them to hold the event. The organisers have since gone on record saying they believe Ms Dick’s resignation would do nothing for their cause - and distract from the wider issues.

The Commissioner has also publicly supported the need for a “cold light of day, sober, review”. After the vigil had been closed down, Assistant Commissioner Helen Ball said hundreds had laid tributes in a “safe and lawful way” but claimed that around 6pm the socially-distanced event became too crowded and after asking people to disperse a “small minority” began “chanting at officers, pushing and throwing items”.

The Met has been under fire since it emerged the man accused of abducting and murdering the 33-year-old marketing executive is a serving police officer 48-year-old Wayne Couzens, due to stand trial at the Old Bailey in October.

Machine gun recovered near Brockwell Park

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk A man has pleaded guilty after officers discovered a Skorpion machine gun, a revolver and multiple rounds of live ammunition in a disused car near his home by Brockwell Park.

Andre Roach, 31, of Bodley Manor Way, SW2, pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of a firearm and one count of possession of ammunition on Tuesday, March 9, at Inner London Crown Court following an investigation by the Met’s Specialist Crime Command.

The investigation involved multiple rounds of forensic examination of the firearms by the Met’s forensics team and ultimately linked Roach to the weapons.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the same court for sentencing on Tuesday, March 30.

Roach was found not guilty of possession with intent to endanger life.

Some models of the Skorpion gun have a rate of fire of 1150 rounds per minute.

Police say the weapon recovered had been converted to be fully automatic, and upon controlled testing both it, and the revolver, were found to be in full working order. Almost 100 rounds of ammunition - some of which were designed to expand on impact – were also recovered.

The discovery was made after officers in a car on patrol in Brixton on 30 April last year became suspicious of a man riding

Following a short pursuit, the 29-yearold man was arrested and during a search the officers recovered a quantity of a cannabis.

Officers said the man shouted to another individual across the street to ‘go home and clear up.’ Police subsequently arrested this man who was identified as Roach.

Due to his association with the man found in possession of drugs, Roach was searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act and found to be in possession of £315 in cash and two sets of car keys – one to his own vehicle and one for a car at a car park

near his home address.

Officers attended the car park and searched this car, where they found the firearms and ammunition hidden under carpet in the spare wheel well in the boot.

Police said following rigorous forensic examination, Roach’s left forefinger print and DNA profile was found on the plastic bag which contained the ammunition and on the grip plate of the revolver, linking him to the weapons.

Detective Sergeant Chris Ladmore, from the Specialist Crime Command, said: “These firearms were manufactured for the singular purpose of killing or maiming. They have no place on the streets of London and the seizure of these formidable weapons is an

exemplary example of how officers’ small observations of nuanced behaviour – which is a key part of their training – can lead to the discovery of serious crime.

“There is little doubt this seizure has prevented serious injury or even death.

The dedicated work of Specialist Crime detectives, aided by colleagues within forensics, were able to build a case where Roach’s only option was to plead guilty to possession of these firearms and ammunition.

“We will continue to work tirelessly to remove these deadly weapons from the streets and I implore any person with information about firearms to speak to police or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously.”

On Friday, March 12, Cosmin Tudorache was sentenced after being found guilty at a trial at Inner London Crown Court in January.

He was also put on the sex offenders’ register and given a sexual harm prevention order for ten years.

Tudorache, from Dollis Hill in Brent, was found guilty of rape and two counts of assault by penetration.

The court heard his victim, a woman in her 30s, had booked a 90-minute deep tissue massage at her home in Lambeth through an app she used regularly.

Part way through the massage, he began sexually assaulting the woman before raping her. In court he tried to claim they had consensual sex.

Nathan Paine-Davey, a senior prosecutor from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “As a professional massage therapist on a house call, Cosmin Tudorache’s actions amounted to a grave abuse of trust. He took advantage of his victim who was alone.

“Tudorache claimed that the sexual activity had been consensual, or at worst – a misunderstanding. But the jury, having heard directly from the victim, decided otherwise.

“I would like to highlight the bravery of the victim who gave evidence during the trial. I hope this conviction goes some way in helping her move forward in her life.

“Sexual offences are some of the most traumatic and complex cases to prosecute, but the CPS will bring offenders to justice where there is the evidence to do so.”

On the road out of lockdown Surge testing in parts of SE5 & SE17

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Surge testing is taking place in parts of SE5 and SE17 after the South African variant of COVID-19 was detected in Southwark.

This week the government announced extra testing and genomic sequencing was taking place within parts of Camberwell and Walworth, in SE5 and SE17 postcodes along with postcodes HA2 and HA3 of Harrow, after cases were reported in both boroughs.

Residents in these areas are being ‘strongly advised’ to take a COVID-19 test when contacted.

Surge testing usually involves door-todoor visits from officials encouraging people to take even if they do not have any symptoms.

Around 2,000 people are being contacted after a case was detected.

Enhanced contact tracing is also taking place to determine how the virus has transmitted in the area.

Councillor Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for community safety and public health said: “There is no cause for alarm.

“The variant does not appear to cause more severe symptoms than the regular COVID-19 strain, nor does it yet appear to

be resistant to the vaccines.

“However, it is important that we identify how far, if at all, the variant has spread.

“If you’re contacted by the council by letter, please take a test if we ask you to.

In the week up to March 6, there were 105 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Southwark. The borough’s seven-day incidence rate had dropped by 10 per cent compared to the week earlier, to 33 per 100,000 people.

Almost 80 per cent of people aged 70 and above have now had their first dose of the vaccine - a figure which is lagging behind other areas of the UK. There are currently testing sites for people with symptoms at Burgess Park, and Belair Park in Dulwich. A new location has also opened at Walworth Square near Elephant and Castle. Rapid tests for people without symptoms can be taken at Peckham Pulse or London Bridge Station at the St Thomas Street exit.

Bake to the future for Apprentice winner

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Managing two bakeries in coronavirus lockdown while juggling parent duties as a single mother has been a “tough” challenge for Apprentice winner Carina Lepore, but has helped her become more resilient, she said.

Speaking to the News, Lepore, who runs the Dough Bakehouse in Herne Hill and Beckenham, said her main focus in

lockdown has been keeping her team of about twenty employees safe.

“We made sure staff weren’t getting public transport in. We made sure their Ubers were covered, so that was a big business expense just to make sure the team felt as safe as possible.

“We obviously also had to make sure the team weren’t working so closely back to back, that was a big stretch for the team because we’re normally on top of each other.

Lepore made the decision with her

business partner Alan Sugar to pivot to deliveries at the start of the first lockdown in March 2020. The company has kept the Herne Hill branch open throughout and opened the Beckenham shop in September.

“We thought that was the light at the end of the tunnel and it was a sensible decision to expand,” she said.

“We thought it was the right thing to do at the time. Obviously within a couple of months we were in a national lockdown again and it was tough. We haven’t been able to take off and make our mark on the high street in Beckenham in the way we would have liked.”

Sir Sugar has been notoriously dismissive of Covid-19 restrictions on business, describing people who work from home as “complacent” in September.

The Apprentice host told ITV: “You can switch telly on anytime of the day and see more bad news, I’m not interested.

'You go down Whitehall, it’s like a ghost town. They only need half an excuse not to go to work, we’re paying for them by the way.”

Lepore was able to keep all of her staff working in 2020, but used the flexible furlough system in January to rotate temporary layoffs between employees as the post-Christmas lull hit hard.

Management also shelved all bonuses and pay rise discussions as part of the belttightening.

She said: “January is always a tough month

even without Covid. After Christmas, when people are eating out the whole time, in January people generally want to cut back and don’t want to eat cakes as much.

“It’s obviously even harder in a pandemic when lots of people are struggling for money.”

Staff have also been working longer hours than usual to help provide food for people in need in the local area, Lepore said.

“Making sure that we could deliver food to vulnerable people in the area was key for us. We work alongside the local butcher and the greengrocer. It’s been a community effort. We all worked together. I think we got stronger from it.

But managing the ambiguity caused by frequent changes in coronavirus rules for the hospitality sector over the past year has been “a challenge” on top of life as a single parent, Lepore said.

“There’s a lot on your shoulders as a small business owner. There’s the business side, on the personal side as a single mum having to manage home schooling was also a real challenge, especially without things like football camp.”

Controversy struck in September when local residents complained about a noisy brunch event held in an outside space at the Beckenham branch just days after its launch. Rules at the time allowed outdoor events of up to 30 people, provided people kept to social distancing rules.

A local publication reported that police

and Bromley council Covid-19 enforcement teams visited the event but took no further action. Lepore told the News that everything was above board.

“We were within the rules - the police and the council visited after the complaint and they told us it was fine. Nothing got cancelled, nothing got shut down. We had all the paperwork and everyone’s details.

Social distancing was in place and it was all outdoors.”

Lepore went into business with Sugar after winning the Apprentice in 2019. She said the business magnate’s years of experience proved vital at the start of lockdown.

“I was in panic mode...To be able to draw on his experience was great - he helped me focus,” she added.

“He was in Australia and we were doing Zoom calls at odd times because of the time difference. His advice was just to keep going.

He was very encouraging. Our relationship became less business, more personal.”

Despite the growth in the personal side of their relationship, Lepore said she had not thought about stopping calling her business partner Lord Sugar.

“I don’t know when that’ll change,” she said. “I might ask him now though!”

Although the Beckenham launch has not been as successful as she hoped, Lepore is already planning a third branch of Dough Bakehouse, possibly this year. The exact location remains unclear, but it will be somewhere within five miles of Herne Hill.

Dockhead boozer to open up and praying for good weather

Pubs can reopen outdoor areas from April 12 under the UK's route out of Covid-19 lockdown measures, as long as infections keep going down and the vaccine programme continues at a similar rate.

The Ship Aground, run by Pat Jarman, has been shut since November under Tier 2 rules, as it does not serve food.

"It's been a very tough year - it's a long, long time without earning" Pat said. "I've still got to pay my bills.

"Hopefully we've got through it now. We just hope the weather holds up in April".

The Ship Aground, on Wolseley Street in the Dockhead area of Bermondsey, has a large back garden and front garden that will both be open to the public in April.

Spaces are largely booked up already for the first few weeks, Pat said.

'It's been a nightmare year' but Bermondsey’s Grange has the space

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The Grange pub is set to reopen in April under the government's gradual move to lift lockdown, although its landlord is worried about possible staff shortages.

Pubs are allowed to reopen their outdoor areas from April 12, provided conditions on infection and vaccine rates are met, the government said in February.

The Grange, on Grange Road near Bermondsey Spa Gardens, will be opening its garden and putting out tables and chairs in the outdoor space to the side of the building.

Bookings are already filling up fast, landlord Matt Downie told the News. "The first Saturday is looking absolutely ridiculous," he added. Matt said that the spacious outdoor areas are safe and ventilated.

The pub was also very busy last summer when it was allowed to reopen for several months. But the stop-start nature of lockdown rules has made for a "nightmare"

year, Matt added.

"My main concern now is having enough staff" he said. "I'm trying to convince the university students to come back, but they're complaining about having too much work to do."

Pubs will be allowed to reopen their indoor areas from May 17 at the earliest, provided people keep gatherings to a maximum of six and only mix two households.

Founder’s Arms is hoping to get an extra storey in Bankside

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The owners of the Founder’s Arms pub next to Blackfriars Bridge want to add a new bar and dining area to attract more customers, according to documents on Southwark’s planning website.

Young’s & Co, which owns the pub, said in its planning application submitted this month that the extension will “vastly improve” the Founder’s Arms, “increase enjoyment of the river” and “enhance the vitality” of the local area.

Pubs have been shut for much of the past year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with some forced to close.

Young’s said that “now more than ever, proposals that ensure pubs will remain popular, competitive and

ultimately viable, should be welcomed.”

Young’s put in a preliminary application in 2018, which has now been revised because of concerns about the impact on local residents’ privacy – particularly people living in the nearby Falcon Point block.

The company said that the updated application takes these complaints into consideration. Local community group Better Bankside were invited to look over the application and were “generally supportive”, Young’s said.

A single objection has been raised on the planning website, complaining of the additional noise that could result from the extension.

Time Out’s Love London winner gives the thumbs up for April

The pub, located on Lower Road near Southwark Park, will open for outdoor use only from Wednesday 14th April as they are usually closed on a Monday.

Duo Robert Wennberg and Jaime Foà were voted ‘Favourite Restaurant in London SE16’ in the Time Out Love London Awards in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018.

Last year, the Yellow House was also awarded OpenTable Diners’ Choice by its ‘wonderful’ customers for the fourth consecutive year.

Tables will be available outside at the front or overlooking a corner of Southwark Park.

Space is limited so they are encouraging customers to book early.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Proposals to build ‘infill’ housing on green and communal spaces in Nunhead’s Priory Court estate have been shelved by Southwark Council.

Newly reinstated housing chief councillor Stephanie Cryan said the decision was based on projected costs; telling the News that the number of homes that could be squeezed into the small site would not present good value for money.

But campaigners believe public pressure, media attention and the ongoing fall out from ex-cabinet member Leo Pollak’s resignation after he was discovered to have been running an unattributed Twitter account that argued with residents over housing issues all

played a part.

Priory Court and other so-called ‘in-fill’ projects - whereby new council housing is being built on estates’ green spaces or in inventive, ‘underused areas’ - have become flashpoints in Southwark.

Residents in Priory Court were told on Friday, March 12, that the project was not going ahead. The plans included nine flats for the 72-flat estate.

Campaigners say the news came hours before the estate was due to appear in a national television news report subsequently not broadcast.

Cllr Cryan told the News: “We are delivering the most ambitious council house building programme anywhere in the UK, which will see 11,000 new council homes all across Southwark by 2043.

“As a densely populated inner London

borough, we’ve had to look at innovative ways to build much-needed new council homes by exploring all options and seeking out every potential new housing site, including on our existing estates.

“With every opportunity, we have to carefully consider the potential number of homes we could build against our ambitious targets and we have to be certain we’re using public money in the most economical way possible.

“We won’t be pursuing any plans for new homes on Priory Court because, on this occasion, the finances didn’t stack up, and we believe we can deliver more new council homes elsewhere at better value.”

“We can’t believe we’ve won,” said resident and campaign coordinator, Lewis Schaffer. “They should listen to residents and stop building on our estates.”

The latest monitoring report for the London Plan shows that a net 3,523 homes were completed in Southwark over the period - nearly 130 per cent of the borough's target amount.

That includes new houses and flats, student accommodation, care homes and empty properties brought back into use.

Southwark ranked highest in terms of raw numbers, but other boroughs beat their targets by more. Hillingdon and the City of London more than doubled their benchmarks.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A young family in a Bermondsey estate are in despair after finding human faeces on the stairwell outside their flat “countless times”.

Murshed Ahmed and his wife Fateha Begum have contacted Southwark Council several times for help with the repeated pooing on the Neckinger estate near busy Abbey Street, but the local authority have been unable to make a difference.

“Urine is one thing - but someone opening their backside on the staircase is disgusting,” Ahmed told the News. “It’s not the first time it’s happened, it’s not the second time - I’ve lost count now.”

The couple, who live with two young children on the estate, said they first contacted the council in June 2020, but to no avail.

“It’s only two weeks ago when it happened again that I just couldn’t handle it any more, I thought ‘this is ridiculous’,” Ahmed added.

Ahmed and Begum said they told the council that they would pay for security doors on the staircase to deter the serial offenders, but authorities refused.

Southwark Council expressed sympathy for the “disgusting” problem faced by the family.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark cabinet member for council housing, said: “I’m sorry this family has had this happen to them, it is disgusting and I sympathise.

“Our cleaning teams are very quick to clean up when it is reported to us, but unfortunately we have to prioritise funding for antisocial behaviour measures such as security doors where we receive the most demand and complaints, as funding is limited. We will continue to listen and if t-he problem becomes worse or we receive more complaints, we will review the situation.”

Hamlets, which completed 1,978 affordable homes over the same period.

But the proportion of affordable homes in Southwark within total new housing went down slightly over the three-year period, from 23 per cent in 2016/2017 to 21 per cent in 2018/2019.

That figure is still relatively high. For context, Waltham Forest had the highest percentage of new affordable homes at 28 per cent. Hounslow and Islington each had 26 per cent. Lewisham and Tower Hamlets had 25 per cent.

Some 304 affordable properties with three or more bedrooms were built in the borough over the year, just beating out Ealing, which built 302.

Meanwhile the number of vacant properties in the borough fell by 297, second only to Ealing, which reduced empty homes by 334. Some 22 boroughs saw vacant housing numbers increase, with Harrow recording 409 more empty homes.

Although turnout was 64 per cent overall, a higher proportion of residents living in the affected low rise blocks cast their votes in the survey - 73 per cent.

The independent ballot, run by Civica, saw 86 per cent of voters say yes to redevelopment, paving the way for demolishing the low rise blocks, building replacement homes, and new council homes. The redevelopment includes creating new over 55s housing, a new park at the centre of the estate, a new Pilgrims’ Way Primary School, and new retail and business spaces on the Old Kent Road and Ilderton Road. The plans do not include the three high rise towers, which are already part of a refurbishment programme.

After consulting with residents, the council has also agreed to refurbish homes in Manor Grove, rather than including them within the wider

regeneration.

Those living in the towers and Manor Grove remain eligible to cast votes in the overall ballots.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan. Cabinet Member for Council Housing, said: “This is a fantastic outcome and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the residents who have been so engaged and offered their thoughts and ideas as part of the consultations, especially the members of the Tustin Community Association.

“This proposal will not only offer better homes for existing residents, with more up to date designs for energy efficiency and space, but increase the number of new council homes on the estate providing more opportunities for local people living in housing need.”

Andrew Eke, Chair of the Tustin Community Association said: “We believe this is the right decision for the estate and its residents and we look forward to continuing working with the council to bring the project forward over the next few years.”

The redevelopment will replace all 249 council and leaseholder homes due to demolished, and build an additional 440 new homes, with the remainder for private sale to help finance the project.

Blue Bermondsey has produced a series of free audio walks for children and families to explore South Bermondsey.

The stories encourage children to reimagine the world around them with amazing characters told by a range of professional storytellers.

A narrator will guide families through the story and tell you when it is time to walk to the next location.

Activity sheets are also available for children to do while out on the trails or at home.

There are currently five audio walks available, which all start at various points in South Bermondsey.

arts’ Mental health charity EXPANDS inTO SOUTHWARK

An arts charity combatting a “mental ill health crisis” triggered by the Covid-19 lockdown has expanded into Southwark from its base in neighbouring Lewisham with a new £125,000 grant.

‘Proper bloke’ to walk fifty miles A Bermondsey man will walk fifty miles in one day to battle the stigma surrounding men’s mental health.

Lifelong SE16 resident, Scott Johnson, started the ‘Proper Blokes Club’ in September 2020 as a way to get men talking about mental health through walking.

“A lot of men are quite guarded, even with their close friends,” he said. “It’s called the proper blokes’ club because we’re trying to break down those stereotypes.

Scott, a dad to three daughters, said he had experienced poor mental health beginning at 25 which had inspired him to set up the walk and talk group.

“Before that I was just a happy-golucky 25-year-old,” he said. “But my mind was all over the place really, it’s only been the past few years that I’ve got back on track really.”

Mr Johnson recently walked an outstanding five marathons in five

days to raise awareness for men’s mental health.

From February 28 to March 5, Scott tallied up a total of 131 miles of walking across Greenwich, Surrey Quays and of course his native Bermondsey.

Less than a month later and he’s already preparing for his next challenge, a ‘mammoth’ fiftymile walk from Windsor to Tower Bridge; the ‘biggest distance’ he will have done in a day.

In a video on Twitter, Scott said: “A massive thanks to everyone that supported me… I couldn’t have done it without your support so I really appreciate it.

Arts Network, which provides arts and crafts groups for people with severe mental health conditions, has moved online since the onset of the pandemic last year.

The charity has also launched a magazine called Stay Connected, with a growing readership of 1,200.

And with a new £125,300 grant over three years from its backer the City of London Corporation Bridge Trust, people with mental health problems in Southwark and Lambeth are now set to benefit from Art Network’s services.

“We’re already seeing increased demand for our services and we fear a mental ill health crisis will follow from the Covid pandemic,” said the charity’s founder Mo Saunders. “This funding will allow us to reach even more of the people who are most in need of our services.”

“When people are with us they are not labelled as someone with a mental illness – they’re just artists. It gives them a sense of self-respect, they learn new creative skills and start to build up social connections in a really supportive environment.”

Dhruv Patel, chairman of the City of London Corporation City Bridge Trust, said he was impressed by the lengths many charities have gone to in order to adapt during the pandemic.

“Arts Network is a perfect example,” he added. “By moving workshops online and launching a really successful magazine, they’ve been able to ensure people with mental health issues can stay connected and enjoy the therapeutic and cathartic benefits of exploring their creativity.”

A childhood friend of Damilola Taylor has been nominated for Best Presenter at this year’s Royal Television Society Programme Awards.

200K meals not wasted Borough Market celebrated 200,000 meals delivered to people in need last week, with the help of anti-food waste charity Plan Zheroes.

Yinka Bokinni was a friend of Damilola Taylor.

Plan Zheroes has collected around 80,000 tonnes of surplus food since first joining forces with the market in 2014. The organisation has a group of around 40 volunteers who collect the food from market traders and pass it onto specialist charities.

Most of the food donated is fruit and vegetables, but Borough Market traders have also given plenty of baked goods, meat and fish and dairy products as well.

Borough Market managing director Darren Heneghan said the traders take cutting waste very seriously.

“But it is impossible to get quantities exactly right,” he added. “Our footfall numbers vary daily, with factors as simple as the weather or as complex as Covid, having an impact on people visiting us.

A staff member at Evelina Children’s Hospital has raised £2,000 for patients who need help with money after leaving hospital by cycling 53 miles on her static bike.

Ciorsdan Glass, who works in communications at Evelina London, part of Guy’s and St Thomas, raised the money for the Samaritan Fund, which supports patients who leave the hospital in financial hardship.

Money might go towards food, bedding or clothes for people in need. It can also help the parents of children at Evelina London who may need to leave work to support their child.

“I have worked for the Trust for over five years now and have seen how the charity makes the patient experience better, said Glass, 37.

“This particular fund is a really good way to help our patients experiencing difficulties.”

Glass, who lives in Richmond, west London, said that the challenge was a perfect way to make a difference while stuck in lockdown.

“Raising so much to help others made me feel really happy. It gave me something to reach for and a way to push myself.

“I had a target of £500, but I kept moving it back because people were really generous.”

Mia Hilborn, head of spiritual health care at Guy’s and St Thomas’ thanked Glass for her contribution.

“The Samaritan Fund is unique,” she added. “It helps staff alleviate distress quickly with some practical support. It’s a wonderful fund, and a brilliant part of my job.”

Zooming to Neverland

The Dulwich Players will be premiering their online production of ‘Peter Pan’ in nightly chapters next week.

The amateur dramatic group, formed in 1969, recorded a new version of the classic children’s tale over Zoom.

Land, where Captain Hook seeks vengeance against Peter for cutting off his hand.

With theatre performances unable to take place due to coronavirus regulations, the Players had to develop new ways to perform and reach their audience.

Out of some very long discussions on Zoom and WhatsApp came their series of eight ‘lockdown productions.’

In June 2020, they ‘Zoomed’ an adaptation of Matthew Wilkie’s ‘Horst Buchholz and other stories’ about a group of friends at a pub quiz.

Members have since covered Much Ado About Nothing, The Importance of Being Earnest and Macbeth.

Peter Pan will be available to watch on the Dulwich Players YouTube channel each weekday evening from 18th March at 7 PM.

Yinka Bokinni presented the Channel 4 documentary Damilola: The Boy Next Door which looked back at how the murder of Damilola Taylor traumatised a community and changed Peckham.

In the documentary, Yinka, and others who knew ‘Dami’, remember their friend, the long road to justice, and the way the tragedy condemned the nowdemolished North Peckham Estate as one of Britain’s ‘sink estates’.

The film is also up for a separate award in the Best History programme category too.

Ten-year-old Damilola bled to death in a stairwell on November 27, 2000, just months after his family had moved to London from Nigeria. An aspiring doctor, he had been on his way home from a library when he was attacked and left to die from a stab wound from a broken bottle.

Comment Time for the government to do a U-turn on nurses pay

N

urses at Kings College Hospital and the Maudsley bravely went to work from the start of the pandemic when it was known that there was no cure for COVID, when they didn’t have proper masks and Personal Protective Equipment or testing.

While most of us protected ourselves by staying at home, they were on the front line risking their own health to protect ours. Nurses and midwives working in the community continued to go into people’s homes. They worked under intense pressure as COVID filled intensive care beds with desperately ill patients. And many nurses themselves fell ill with the disease. They battled through the first wave and then again faced the intensity of the second wave which saw, at its peak, 34,336 in hospital and the total number of deaths top 120,000.

No wonder we clapped on our doorsteps in heartfelt gratitude. But we felt, and said, at the time that the important public service that they carried out deserved proper financial reward, not just applause.

Being largely a workforce of women, nursing, though much admired has always been underpaid.

And that is even more unfair as we see the increased professionalisation with additional responsibility for prescribing, carrying out procedures

It’s emotionally and physically demanding work, involves night and weekend working and this is made harder by understaffing. And, particularly in our pressurised South London NHS, that has led to many of them “voting with their feet” and leaving meaning the loss of expertise and team continuity. There’s a big concern that nursing vacancies, which have long been a problem, will dramatically accelerate at the end of the pandemic, just when the NHS needs to deal with the huge backlog of operations and untreated illness which has built up during the pandemic.

So, it was devastating when we heard that the government is proposing to the Pay Review Body which will examine nurses pay, that nurses only get . This means, taking into account that inflation is expected to be more than one per cent over the period of the pay proposal, that represents a cut in the spending power of nurses. It was no surprise that the chancellor was too cowardly to mention this in his Budget.

And where have been the protests of our local Tory MPs. They praised the nurses during the pandemic. They voted for a 2.1 per cent pay increase for 2021-22 as part of the NHS Funding Act 2020. And now instead of honouring that promise and rewarding their extraordinary work, Conservative MPs

have gone quiet. They should be telling the health secretary that he should insist that the chancellor goes back to his books and finds extra for the nurses.

And it should not be taken out of the NHS either. The chancellor should find the money from somewhere else. We don’t want to rob Peter to pay Paula.

The government are hoping that we’ll all soon forget about the extraordinary dedication of our nurses. But it’s clear from all the local people who have contacted me that we won’t. They are sewing division by seeking to set people who work in struggling private businesses against the nurses by saying nurses should be happy that they’ve got a job when so many are facing unemployment. We all know that many people have already lost their jobs and many more are threatened.

The government should take steps to tackle that, not use it as an excuse to break their promise to nurses.

Time for the government to do a U-turn on nurses pay.

Shock and anger at Met police response to Clapham vigil - online story I would normally 100% be in support of this vigil and my heart and thought go out to Sarah’s family but we are in the middle of a pandemic. This year over 120,000 people have lost their lives and their family members have not been able to attend their funerals to say goodbye. The police may have handled it wrong but they should have never have had to attend in the first place. Politicians supporting this gathering are just playing their own game because other vigils and protests such as BLM were condemned. COVID is still real and these people are putting lives at risk. There are other ways to show respect, mourn and have your voices heard.

There should be no vigil during this difficult time with covid. The organisers can arrange it when it is safe to do so. We cannot keep losing lives to COVID. What is more important is to make the world a safer place so that women and young girls can have the freedom to go about their daily lives without being groped, cat called, assaulted, raped or murdered. Every single woman has had at least one of these violations against them. I have had many and so has my daughter. It will not stop but we can educate our sons and hopefully it will make a difference.

Feed plants as they wake up and start rapid growth

T

he second half of March can often be dry with warm days; but keep the fleece and cloches to hand as tender plants may need some protection - temperatures can fall quite markedly at night.

Planting of deciduous trees, hedging shrubs and roses need to be completed this month. Herbaceous perennials such as Anemone, Campanula, Echinacea, hardy Geranium, Rudbeckia and Verbenas can be planted during March and April; they provide a backdrop for displays in the borders and beds.

It’s time to feed plants as they wake up and start putting on rapid growth. Lightly dig in wellrotted manure or compost around shrubs; this also helps improve soil condition. Garden centres have (bagged) compost and manure (look out for organic products) but this can be expensive, and so if you have a garden / allotment and don’t compost - maybe it is time to start!

In the vegetable plot pick any over

wintering crops (cabbage, leeks, celeriac) to free up space for new season’s plants; the first sowings of beetroot, early seed potatoes, carrots (under cover if the weather is cold) and radishes can be started.

Spring flowering shrubs to enjoy include – the Forsythia which pops up everywhere and is easily recognisable by its cheerful yellow flowers; Magnolia stellata - a small tree that grows as a shrub; its pure white fragrant blooms are a joy but they are often lost early to strong March winds. Another Magnolia, usually in bloom during April is already out; M. Soulangeana has decided to unfurl its lovely pink flowers early. The Hellebore ‘atrorubens’ stands out in the spring garden – it has a neat, compact habit with startling deep purple-red blooms that last into April.

One modest little plant rarely seen but is a delight to have in the garden is Viola odorata commonly known as sweet violet.

It establishes as a perennial also setting seed, and so once planted

will always be a spring companion.

Viola doesn’t mind shade, produces blue, fragrant flowers in March; over time it spreads becoming a ground cover plant - but is easily thinned out by digging up individual specimens; these can be potted up and given as gifts. Viola is also happy growing in window boxes with a mix of spring bulbs, ferns, garden Thymes and miniature Cyclamen.

The astronomical end of winter occurs on 20th March followed by the clocks going forward on 27th March marking the start of British Summer Time. We are leaving winter behind - and looking forward to the lengthening days giving more time to work in the garden - weather permitting.

Last chance to have your say on K-pop festival in Southwark Park Sounds horrendous with such a large amount of people that could attend. I don’t think the park is large enough to deal with an event like this. Restrictions probably won’t be in place but I think it’s too soon for an event like this. I would think for residents living by the park will find the noise level intolerable.

It is so shortsighted to close a school in an area of massive regeneration

C

losing schools is always a short-term fix that saves money for stretched budgets in the immediate term, but inevitably leads to shortages at a later date.

If data shows that birth rates in Walworth are falling and won’t rise again for several years it is hardly a surprise - anyone could have guessed that ongoing massive regeneration projects in St John’s catchment area would create a sharp decline.

However, this trend is not permanent. But once a school building is lost, and its teachers, it is gone forever.

It seems relatively easy to close a school down. Although it could be hugely disruptive to families, as well as creating redundancies, governors at St John’s think they can finish this transition by the beginning of the autumn term. In just a few months a school with a long tradition, that is well-loved by generations, could be no more.

Building a new school when the next baby boom happens is much harder work. It requires a lot of investment, and takes years to build trust and confidence. If we are being told Old Kent Road is the next big regeneration project and will create a new ‘town centre’ and community, and needs two new primary schools, it seems mad to see St John’s - a school widely regarded as getting back to its previous outstanding form - close forever, and possibly lose the valuable buildings in its estate.

As we have seen with the Elephant and Castle regeneration, there is no guarantee that plans will materialise within the set time frames. If there is any chance the new schools are not built in time, or do not adequately meet demand, we could go back to the not-so-distant past when schools were oversubscribed in Southwark and the council had to scramble to fix shortages. That is without even considering the huge cost of building a new school to replace a lost one.

The fact that the council has so little to say about this is a shock. We have seen documents that imply other schools could also be at risk - most notably, nearby English Martyrs which could merge with St George’s.

How many other schools could close in the next ten years if declining pupil numbers are more widespread than previously thought? And will parents be told well in advance - or just months beforehand, like at St John’s?

After collecting postcards to and from Bermondsey and Rotherhithe where he was born and bred, Micky Holland decided to write a book about the people who sent and received the postcards he collected, writes Elizabeth Paul....

What made you write a book?

“After years of looking at the pictures on the front I began looking at the messages on the back and realised there was a lot more interest and drama there… I discovered I had many postcards going to the same people and couldn’t make out why. But then someone told me that collecting postcards was popular a hundred years ago, like collecting stamps, and that I now had some of their collections, collections they had left when they died.”

The collector pushed one of his thick albums of Edwardian postcards across the socially-distanced bench. I flicked through and quickly became enthralled in the old images of places I knew.

“See!” I heard. “They get inside your head, don’t they?’ And they did. The Blue, where we were sitting, Tower Bridge Road, Jamaica Road, Old Kent Road, Surrey Docks and Southwark Park as I’d never seen them before. He passed another album over: Rotherhithe Tunnel, Tower Bridge, local pubs, churches, schools… But wait until you read the backs’, he said,’ tapping his forefinger on the album. ‘That’s where the stories are!”

I was then given a rundown of how his friend had taught him how to research family histories, delve into army records and church archives to bring to life the people mentioned on the postcards.

“Without Debra Gosling,’ he emphasised, ‘this book would never have happened.”

20th century, with its focus on SE16 and SE1. “These are the years my nan was growing up in Rotherhithe,” he shouts as a lorry thunders by. “My nan walked down those streets just as they looked in those postcards with the horse and carts, and trams… She used to tell me about those old town halls and theatres before they were bombsites… Her mother used to sing in those pubs!” He became louder with excitement and people were looking.

He became aware of the ‘audience’ so turned to them, smiled and proclaimed: “I’m just telling this writer about my new book. You can have a signed copy for a few quid - It’s all about Bermondsey.” Those that stopped moved off again. “Children will love it for the pictures and grown-ups will be amazed with the details gleaned from the hours and hours of research I did on it,’ he shouted after them.”

What will readers get from it?

“It’s a real insight into life in the first 20 years of the last century: poverty, disease, lack of healthcare, but you can tell by what people write that there was hope and a little positivity about them. The area had seen a big influx of migrant workers from all over England, and beyond, looking for work, and it was those people who settled here that made Bermondsey what it is today, even if most of their descendants have moved out to the suburbs in recent years.”

“There is gossiping and flirting, joy and pain, secret coded messages, upward mobility for some while others fall on hard times… You can see how so many people were connected to the leather and brewing industries that were huge in Bermondsey then; how children were working at a very young age to bring

money into the home… Love stories that end in marriage; war stories that end in death; families writing to each other to ask who survived the ‘Zeppelin raid last night’, and the overarching and constant talk about people’s health and illness of a population having to pay for every trip to the doctor, and for every medicine prescribed, in an age before vaccinations eradicated most of the diseases that killed back then.”

That was a bit of a rant.

“Not really but it does me in when I think about how our people were treated. And it ain’t much different for the workingclass key-workers who keep this country running now, the way they’re treated by

this Tory government.”

I told him that I’d run out of questions.

He didn’t care.

“Put it this way, those old picture postcards were the closest thing poor people could get to an art collection, so they were treasured. And it’s because they collected them back then that they are still on online auctions now and at postcard fairs… Who is saving their postcards now for future generations?”

Not me. “I am.” He crossed his arms and stared me down. “Cos in hundred years time someone will be buying parts of my collection on eBay for their collection, and might even end up researching me for a book called, Dear Micky.” He laughed.

Robert sleeps around, takes lots of drugs, and worries that at 35 he is too old to be partying all the time, behaviour which might have begun after losing his father or because

he liked the feeling that drugs and unfettered sex gave him - even with the blackouts.

But then his young boyfriend, Sergi, proposes, which initially makes Robert feel better about himself but also makes him seek counselling for his wild ways. The therapist feels that Robert will find answers through art - ‘to unblock an unremembered experience’.

So far, so good.

Robert weans himself off the constant drug-taking as he tries to make a life with Sergi but the whispers about gay men dying of overdoses in the area evoke bad memories. More so when the police do not seem to be looking into it: ‘There’s no investigation because it’s gay men dying,’ he screams.

Then Robert finds his mother is not

happy with the engagement as she feels that Sergi is just another boyfriend in the cycle of boyfriends. There is also mention of something that Robert is keeping to himself.

Inevitably, with the cheating, the lying, the secrets, and Robert always on edge with his personal demons, you are just waiting for the fall to come and everything that had become good in his life to turn bad.

There are no surprises in GHBoy. No dramatic twists at the end. It meanders somewhat and not all of my initial confusion is clarified. Are the people that turn up his imagination or are they real? Is Robert having conversations with Death or does he know the person responsible for the men dying?

What did you find in your research?

It took a while to work out where each scene of Paul Harvard’s debut play GHBoy was supposed to be as the stripped down stage hardly allowed for set changes, but once the confusion settled we could find ourselves either in Robert’s flat, Robert’s mum’s, clubs, various bedrooms, a therapist’s office or the Tate Gallery looking at Picasso’s The Three Dancers, a painting depicting the sex and violence in a love triangle, writes Michael Holland.

So why is the book called Dear Tommy?

His eyes narrowed. He scratched his nose and stroked his beard. “Writing this book was a labour of love for me… If you buy it you’ll find out why it’s called Dear Tommy, and it’s worth buying the book just to find out.” And then he upped and left to buy prawns and winkles at the seafood stall.

I’ve read the book and can tell you that many people will find their families and their addresses in there. The play is as abstract as the Picasso at the heart of the story.

Jimmy Essex as Robert, however, is quite remarkable. He is on throughout the play, sometimes having simultaneous conversations with three others as life closes in on him, and it is his performance that makes GHBoy worth seeing.

Remembering poet John Keats 200 years later can we claim him as one of our own?

He wrote his first published poem while lodging in Dean Street, Southwark

By Simon Throssell news@southwarknews.co.uk February 23 marked the bicentenary of the death of John Keats, one of Britain’s most famous romantic poets and he has a Southwark connection.

The blue plaque outside Keats’ lodgings in Southwark He was able to battle through with support from Fanny as the pair now lived at Leigh Hunt’s house.

In the summer of 1820, he published his final volume of poems which received very strong reviews. They are Lamia, Isabella, The Eve of St Agnes and Other Poems.

His doctor told him that his lungs would not survive an English winter

so he decided to set sail to Italy with his friend, the painter Joseph Severn.

On his arrival in Italy, he was moved into a villa on the Spanish Steps in Rome, today the Keats-Shelley Memorial House museum.

Even with care and support from Severn and his doctor, John Keats died of tuberculosis at the young age of twenty-five.

John Keats was born in Moorgate on 31st October 1795 to stable keepers Thomas and Frances Jennings Keats.

The eldest of five children, John was shipped off to John Clarke’s school in Enfield because his parents couldn’t afford the fees for Harrow or Eton.

In 1804, his father was thrown from a horse and tragically died of a fractured skull.

His mother remarried later that year but disappeared for three and a half years, leaving John and his three surviving siblings to live with their grandmother.

At this point, ten-year-old John suffers from chronic anxiety which worsens as his mother eventually dies from tuberculosis.

In 1811, John was taken out of school and apprenticed to Thomas Hammond, an apothecary-surgeon from Edmonton.

It was during the final year of this apprenticeship that he started writing poetry privately from his lodgings at 8 Dean Street, Southwark. A Blue Plaque can be found marking the lodgings on St Thomas Street today.

He is introduced to the poet Leigh Hunt who encourages him to publish his first volume simply titled Poems.

Much to his publishers’ surprise, the book was a critical failure.

Keats decided to change publishers to people who were enthusiastic about his work; a decision that certainly seemed to pay off.

He eventually abandoned his medical career for good in December 1816 so that he could focus solely on his poetry.

As his work started to receive more praise, Keats' connections grew alongside a friendship with Charles Armitage Brown.

The pair embarked on a six-week walking tour of England and Scotland in July 1818 but all is not well as Keats’ brother Thomas is ill with tuberculosis.

Assured that his brother will survive the ‘family illness’, Keats finished his first major long poem Endymion. The poem began with the immortal line, “A thing of beauty is a joy forever.”

Sadly, by December 1818, Keats’ beloved brother Thomas fell victim to the ‘family illness’ and died of tuberculosis at the age of nineteen.

After his brother’s death, Keats moved into Wentworth Place in Hampstead with Brown.

This place proved to be fruitful not only for writing poetry but also for meeting his neighbour and future fiance Fanny Brawne.

Keats composed five of his six great odes, his most famous and wellregarded poems, throughout 1819 including ‘Ode on a Grecian Urn’ which contains the line, “Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard, are sweeter”.

However, as the cold winter nights sweep across London, Keats developed the first symptoms of tuberculosis causing a subsequent battle with depression.

Keats suffered two serious lung haemorrhages in the first few days of February 1820, raising alarm bells that he could pass away at any moment.

In remembrance of his life, the KeatsShelley Memorial House has launched an immersive video tour of the house led by Bob Geldof.

Reading from a selection of letters, Geldof tells the story of Keats’ time in the house and his death.

Southwark Gymnastics CLUB winS grant for mental health projects

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk SIX YOUNG members of Southwark Gymnastics Club were awarded a total of £800 to create products to support mental health during the lockdowns.

Last July, two of their young coaches, Cara Russell and Stephanie Davantin, applied for the London Youth Microgrant in a bid to spread awareness about mental health.

They had the task of creating an idea to support the community through lockdown and came up with two: a ‘Mood Box’ – containing stress balls, candles and planners – and a mental health calendar.

Both were accepted and they were awarded £400 per project.

Since September 2020 they

have been working alongside club director Levent Charles to create and distribute the products.

The club are currently distributing the products for free.

Late Dulwich Hamlet coach honoured Farouk Menia given posthumous award for work in grassroots football

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FAROUK MENIA, the former coach of Dulwich Hamlet Women who passed away last year, was honoured at the FA and McDonald’s Grassroots Football Awards 2020 on Tuesday night.

The posthumous award was given to the volunteer who made a huge contribution to women’s football.

Among a number of national winners at the virtual awards ceremony, Menia was crowned the 2020 Grassroots Coach of the Year for Adult Teams.

Soon after arriving in the UK, Menia became the coach of AFC Phoenix, a women’s team that would eventually merge with Dulwich Hamlet during his seven-year tenure.

Menia was renowned for his passion and qualities as a coach, and his impact and effect on the team culture was huge and immediate.

He brought the players together not only as a team, but as an extended family.

On a tiny budget, the team thrived against big clubs including QPR Ladies and Fulham Women, succeeding thanks to Menia’s dedication and coaching abilities.

Despite having cancer for a number of years, he continued to coach and encourage his players, often in the rain and freezing cold.

Sadly, just prior to lockdown and in the middle of the season, Menia passed away.

He is remembered at Dulwich for everything he gave to his club.

Local McDonald’s franchisee Terry Eagle, who is an avid supporter of grassroots football in south-east London, said: “I’m so pleased we are still able to come together and recognise the work of Farouk Menia within the grassroots football community in London.

“Farouk’s selfless commitment is evident and his story really highlights the difference volunteers make to our community.

“I’m sure the club misses him greatly and I wish the team every success in continuing his legacy when grassroots football returns in the coming weeks.”

The FA & McDonald’s Grassroots Football Awards celebrate the efforts of volunteers across England who go the extra mile to support their local communities.

Normally, the winners are presented with their awards at a ceremony held at Wembley Stadium, before being guests of honour at the curtain raiser for the football season – the Community Shield.

Although this was not possible for the class of 2020 due to the pandemic, there were still some stellar names involved, including World Cup winner Sir Geoff Hurst, Martin Keown, Casey Stoney and England manager Gareth Southgate.

A former board member of the ECB, Stewart’s legacy at Surrey is defined by the building of the OCS Stand at the Vauxhall End of the ground and the staging agreement that guaranteed international cricket every year and made the stand’s construction possible.

Richard Thompson, chairman of Surrey County Cricket Club, said: “To have had the honour of working closely with David for over 20 years provides memories I will hold dearly.

“Having learned so much from him, I will forever be humbled by the unconditional support he offered as I

followed him as chairman. He was a true friend and mentor.

“Few men have achieved so much in their lives, but remain utterly grounded, without ego or malice.

David will always be judged by what he gave. Few have given more, with a legacy that will have lasting and meaningful impact. My life, as many others, were the richer for knowing David Stewart.”

The flag at the Kia Oval is being flown at half-mast in Stewart’s honour.

Meanwhile, Sam Curran, Tom Curran and Reece Topley have all signed new long-term contracts with Surrey.

Surrey mourn death of former chairman and president

By Sports Reporter sport@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY COUNTY Cricket club said they were “saddened” after the death of their former chairman and president David Stewart, who passed away after a short illness at the age of 79.

A member of the General Committee from 1995, treasurer in 1997 and then chairman of the club from 2003 to 2008 and president in 2017 and 2018, Stewart was central to the commercial transformation of Surrey CCC in the late 1990s and early part of the 21st century.

Sam and Tom Curran are both graduates of the Surrey Academy, making their first-team debuts in 2015 and 2013, respectively.

Sam was capped by the club in 2018, a year that saw him help Surrey to the County Championship title and earn his first international call-up.

Still only 22, he has now played 124 times for Surrey and 34 times for England.

Twenty-six-year-old Tom was capped in 2016 and now has more

than 300 wickets to his name in 156 Surrey appearances. He has played 53 times for England, having been capped in all three formats.

Left-arm seamer Topley joined Surrey in October 2019. His first season with the club saw him pick up fifteen wickets in eleven matches as a key part of the run to the Vitality Blast final.

Gary Rowett was all smiles after victory over his former club

THEY MUST be sick of the sight of Gary Rowett at Pride Park.

Derby’s former manager returned with Millwall for the second time and for the second time the Lions won 1-0.

It was Millwall’s third consecutive 1-0 win at Derby and Rowett has now been back four times and not been beaten, claiming those two wins and two draws with Stoke.

Rowett has seen his side play a lot better this season and get nothing. The Lions were poor in the first half last Saturday and completed just 93 passes - only eighteen of those in the opposition half.

That was in comparison to Derby’s total of 246 passes, yet the visitors were in front at the break after Shaun Hutchinson headed home Jed Wallace’s corner.

For all the hosts’ domination in the first period they created little. Bart Bialkowski had only one save of note to make from Kamil Jozwiak’s effort from just outside the box.

Craig Forsyth should have done better in an aerial mis-match at the back post against Mahlon Romeo from two Nathan Byrne crosses, but Bialkowski easily caught the first before the Scot headed his second chance wide.

Millwall were confident enough in their back five and defensive shape to allow Derby have most of the ball, but the away side weren’t good enough when they did get possession. That was a pity, because the few times Millwall played forward with quality, Mason Bennett in particular caused problems for

Teden Mengi with his pace and power.

Ryan Woods did his job well, sitting in front of the defence, but either side of him, George Evans and Ben Thompson were too deep, meaning the front pair of Bennett and Jed Wallace had to drop further back.

Millwall haven’t scored many goals from set-pieces this season and that’s one of the reasons why they are in mid-table rather than challenging for the top six. They haven’t taken enough goal chances. This time they only needed one as Hutchinson headed inside an unguarded left-hand post for first league goal this campaign.

Rowett’s side approached the second half in a similar fashion, inviting Wayne Rooney’s side to try to break them down.

They had the chance to extend their advantage when Bennett surged down the left to find Thompson, but the midfielder was indecisive and then played a poor pass behind Wallace as the away side squandered the opportunity.

That was the story of the second half, with the Lions failing to find Mahlon Romeo numerous times when the right wing-back ran forward into space. It kept Derby in the game.

But the Rams, too, lacked that quality to break through Millwall’s defensive set-up.

Rooney was such a direct, positive player, so he must have been frustrated watching his team passing sideways or backwards despite their need for an equaliser.

Derby’s threat was mostly down their right through Byrne. He tested the returning Murray Wallace – making his first start since January 2 after recovering from a broken foot but with only one full training session under his belt – and then Wallace’s replacement Shane Ferguson.

Byrne linked up well with Patrick Roberts but the crosses were meat and drink for the centre-back trio of Hutchinson, Alex Pearce and Jake Cooper.

Derby’s best chance to make it 1-1 fell to Louie Sibley – scorer of a hat-trick at The Den last June – with ten minutes to play.

Byrne’s corner wasn’t dealt with as the ball went to the back post but Sibley crashed his effort off the crossbar from point-blank range.

Derby didn’t do enough with their possession to merit a goal, Millwall’s back five steadfastly defending their box. Home teams have suffered without fans this season. Derby just couldn’t build that head of steam they might have with 20,000-odd supporters behind them.

Last season at Pride Park, Millwall had to work immensely hard to clear anything and everything that was thrown at them late on as the fans urged Derby forward, but that wasn’t the case last Saturday.

For Millwall, it was another good win, all the more creditable as they were without key players. Rowett rejected the notion this was a “smash and grab” Rams raid, but it was close to the dictionary definition of it.

The result was more damaging for Derby than it was beneficial to Millwall. The Rams are still in relegation trouble. The Lions’ aim is now to finish in the top half. Millwall are aiming for consecutive top-ten finishes in the second tier for the first time since 2005.

That would be a decent platform from which to further strengthen the squad in the summer.

And if the UK stays on course on the ‘roadmap’ out of lockdown and fans return in 2021-22, then this team can go even further next season.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT insisted it won’t hinder Millwall’s attempts to sign players in the summer even if they don’t finish as high as last season – because it’s the history and the prestige of the club that’s more important.

After finishing eighth last season, Rowett was able to convince Ireland international Troy Parrott to sign from Tottenham and he also recruited Kenneth Zohore, whom West Brom bought for £8million.

Rowett wants to invest in his attack in the next transfer window after Millwall were the lowest scorers in the top sixteen

last season and are currently the lowest scorers in the top half of the table.

One of Rowett’s main priorities is to sign a central striker that can offer a guarantee of at least fifteen goals.

“It’s always better if you finish quite high up the league but I don’t think it’s going to necessarily stop us signing players,” Rowett said.

“We are what we are, we are the type of club we are. We want players to look at where we’ve been the last two seasons and always what sort of team we’ve got, what sort of club it is.

“We want players who want to play for Millwall, not just because maybe we finished two points higher, two places higher.

“We finished eighth last season, we’d love to finish in that sort of position again, it would be fabulous.

“But at the same time you’ve got a lot of teams in and around us that would love to finish in the top ten.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL FANS want defeat to hurt their side – but maybe even they would have regretted the way Murray Wallace reacted to the loss against Coventry in January.

No Lions supporter has ever doubted the Scot’s commitment, but when he was sent off late on in the 2-1 defeat to the Sky Blues he took out his anger on an object in the tunnel.

Whether that caused his broken foot he’s not sure, but he missed more than two months before returning to the team last Saturday after just two training sessions.

It won’t surprise Lions supporters, either, to hear that even while he was wearing a protective boot Wallace was in the gym hitting the rowing machine and the weights to maintain his strength and fitness.

And when Gary Rowett asked him how he felt last Friday afternoon there was only ever going to be one answer from the man Millwall fans affectionately refer to as ‘Mountain Murray’.

The defender put himself forward for selection, and started in the demanding left wing-back position as the Lions defeated Derby 1-0 at Pride Park.

“I was delighted to be back out on the pitch with the lads. Especially this season with Saturday-Tuesdays you end up missing a lot of games, which is always disappointing,” Wallace told the News.

“It was my left foot. It was a moment of anger after the Coventry game. I don’t know if I’d damaged it in the game but I kicked out at something in the tunnel and I don’t think that helped the situation!

“I didn’t know how bad it was but I tried to train the following week and it was no good. So I went for the scan and it was confirmed.

“What I was worried about initially was what would I be able to do to keep my fitness up, etc. It was actually okay because when I was in the boot there was a lot I could do fitness-wise.

“I could still go on the rowing machines, the bike, could still do a lot of gym sessions and strengthening sessions, so it was good in that sense.

“I had to leave it in the boot for a while before I could start putting any real pressure on it or anything through it.

“I spent five weeks or so in the boot and then maybe had a week on an antigravity treadmill.

“It was a bit of a surprise to me [to be in the team at Derby]. I did a little bit of training on Tuesday, did my first session on the Wednesday and second

full session on the Friday.

“The manager spoke to me and asked me how I felt and how my fitness was.

I felt I’d been doing quite a lot and working hard through the rehab.

“Fitness wasn’t so much an issue, it was more match sharpness but that’s always going to be the case when you’re out for that length of time.

“I told him I felt fit, my body felt good, my foot felt good. It’s almost like coming back from pre-season, it’s hard to get that sharpness unless you play games.

“That was the only concern that we had. I wanted to get back out there to do the best for the team.

“It’s probably one of the more demanding positions in that formation that we play. I was a little bit worried I might blow up.

“But we thought it through sensibly and had a plan where he wasn’t looking for me to bomb forward every time. It was more important to manage it and it worked out.

“I think there was a moment in the first half when there was a one-two and I thought, ‘oh God, this could be a long afternoon’.”

Wallace, 28, has been at Millwall for almost three seasons and while he was recovering from injury agreed a new long-term deal that could see him with the club past his 30th birthday.

Not that he looked that far ahead when he signed from Scunthorpe in the summer of 2018.

He could have let his contract run down and reaped the potential financial reward of a signing-on fee elsewhere.

Injury is always a risk for players that decide on that route, but Wallace explained his January setback was not a factor in his decision to extend his stay in SE16.

“No, not really. It had been in the works for a while, we had been talking before Christmas so it was just about ironing out the finer details of it,” Wallace said.

“I was very happy to have it done because I’ve really enjoyed my time at Millwall, brilliant team, brilliant staff and the club has done very well. It’s something I wanted to continue to be part of.

“You’ve got a contract for a certain amount of time but that doesn’t mean you’ll be at that football club for all that time.

“I didn’t have it set in my mind that this would be the next five, six years.

You approach it like, ‘this is the club that I’m at and I’m going to give it everything to do my best and see where it takes me’.

“Thankfully I’ve really enjoyed my time here and that’s why I’m so happy to extend my stay here.”

Arguably Wallace’s finest moment in a Millwall shirt was his 94th-minute goal in the 3-2 FA Cup fourth-round win over Everton at The Den in January 2019.

He misses the fans, and was reminded of those kinds of explosive atmospheres during his time out.

“I think it’s one of those things that you’ll look back and think, ‘I can’t believe we played through that, what a strange and surreal time’,” Wallace said.

“Initially it was just different but we all coped quite well. You still miss the atmosphere the fans bring. I think it has affected teams’ results.

“You get real swings in momentums in games and sometimes that’s down to the fans, that noise when they get behind you and it can turn games.

They’re massively missed.

“It was in January and I was out injured and I think Millwall had just announced that I’d signed my contract. They put up a few clips [on social media] of the Everton goal and the atmosphere.

“It’s brilliant to look at even in the best of times when you’ve got fans, but seeing as we don’t have fans at the minute it reminded you how much you miss those sorts of reactions [to goals].

“That’s what football is all about, you score a goal and run over to the fans to celebrate with them.

“It’s a shame that we’re missing moments like that at this time.”

Just as Murray Wallace returns from a broken foot, the news comes that Matt Smith is out with the same injury.

That means the Lions are currently without their two target men and it’s just as well they had that nine-game unbeaten run in January and February because a relegation battle without two of your main goal-getters would have been something to worry about.

Millwall have little tangible to fight for in the last nine games of the season. In each of their previous seven seasons, the Lions’ battle to avoid relegation or their efforts to reach the play-offs have gone down to the last two games.

Millwall boss Gary Rowett said he wouldn’t necessarily hand out a number of debuts if their season effectively ends early, but injuries could give some of the younger players opportunities.

Smith joins Kenneth Zohore and Ryan Leonard in the treatment room, while Maikel Kieftenbeld and Connor Mahoney are still doubts.

Including Troy Parrott when he was on loan from Tottenham in the first half of the season, nine first-team players have missed more than a month through injury this campaign.

It’s impossible to quantify how many more points Millwall would have now if they hadn’t had such severe injury problems. But given their struggles in front of goal and that Zohore and Mahoney have shown

Ben Thompson in action against former Millwall midfielder George Saville in the 3-0 defeat at the Riverside last December they can be game-changers, the Lions would surely now be in with a good chance of a top-six challenge.

The other bane of the season has been the performances of some referees and there Rowett would find common ground with Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock.

Every club could perhaps point

to poor decisions from officials but in Millwall’s case the refereeing authorities admitted the Lions should have been awarded three penalties in their 2-1 defeat at Blackburn.

There was also a blatant foul on Shaun Hutchinson in injury-time in another 2-1 loss, at Swansea, when referee Steve Martin bizarrely

ordered the corner to be retaken rather than award a spot-kick. That’s a cost of four points and it’s hard to recall any time when Millwall have received soft decisions from referees in their opponents’ penalty areas this season.

Boss pleased as young guns show ‘character’

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL PROFESSIONAL Development boss Kevin Nugent was pleased with his side’s attacking performance in their 3-3 draw against Bristol City at Calmont Road on Monday.

Nugent put out a younger team than usual and the hosts recovered from being 1-0 down and 3-2 down as goals from Abdul Abdulmalik, Sean O’Brien and Jack Leahy earned a point at the Lions’ training base.

It was an eighth game without a win but Nugent feels his side haven’t always got what they deserved in that run, and praised their character against the Robins.

“We’ve lost a few on the bounce, but haven’t performed that badly in a few of them - some of them have actually been good performances so it was nice to have some attacking play and get three goals,” Nugent said.

“The boys showed really good

character to come back from 1-0 down to go 2-1 up and also to equalise after going 3-2 down.

“Their goalkeeper has made a couple of fantastic saves, too, so we could’ve edged it if not for that. It will also be interesting to see if their third did actually cross the line.”

Unfortunately for Millwall their attacking excellence wasn’t matched in defence. City scored two of their goals after Louis Britton reacted quicker than any of the home players after goalkeeper Ryan Sandford had made two good saves.

Nugent said: “I haven’t seen the goals back, but I think they were poor ones to concede, so that’s something we’ll have to work on and tighten up on. “[Strikers reacting quicker is] something we’ve flagged up a lot.

Our defenders have to smell danger while the strikers sense opportunity in those situations.

“It’s something we’ll continue to work on.”

Jed hails Thommo after midfielder almost departed club

By John Kelly Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JED WALLACE has hailed the resurgence of his “friend” Ben Thompson this season.

Thompson, 25, has forced his way back into the team after being close to a move to Portsmouth before the start of this campaign.

However, Millwall couldn’t find a replacement and Thompson stayed with his boyhood club but initially failed to gain a regular place in Gary Rowett’s team.

Midfielder Thompson started only five league games before Christmas and there was some speculation in January over a move away.

But Rowett’s switch in formation from 5-2-3 to 5-3-2 gave Thompson the chance

as an extra midfielder and he has taken it, starting ten Championship games this year and scoring twice (before Wednesday’s game).

Thompson is in his seventh season as a senior player and could pass the 200-game mark in 2021-22.

“Thommo’s another bubbly character, the lads love him, he’s a very popular member of our changing room and always has been,” Wallace said.

“I know Thommo a long time, I know his strengths and weaknesses. Thommo will be the first person to admit that he’s not the most well-rounded footballer in the division, but what he does is he affects games. He’s always done that for us.

“In key moments he pops up and he’ll hit one off his shin into the bottom corner.

That’s what Thommo is all about, he

affects football matches. He’s a big player for us and he’s a massive player to have in our squad.

“This season especially [it’s important to have] that energy and that drive, from people like Thommo and Danny McNamara, having that youthful enthusiasm.

“It’s little things with Thommo: He’ll win a header he never should win and it gives you a lift, especially without the crowd there. The style he plays rubs off on other people.

“It’s been really nice, for me as well because I really like him, he’s a close friend of mine, it’s always nice to see your friends in the team doing well.

“It helps me out because he runs around as much as me, it makes sure I can save a bit more energy.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MURRAY WALLACE hasn’t given up hope of a Scotland call-up – and is using it as major motivation for the rest of this season.

Scotland qualified last year for the delayed Euro 2020 – their first major tournament since the World Cup in France in 1998 – and are in Group D alongside England, Croatia and Czech Republic.

Steve Clarke’s side have a tantalising fixture against the Auld Enemy at Wembley on June 18, their second game of the tournament.

Wallace has played for the Scotland under-20 and under-21 sides but has never received a senior call-up.

Scotland have two of the best left-backs in the Premier League in Liverpool’s Andy Robertson and

Kieran Tierney of Arsenal, but aren’t as well-stocked at centre-back, meaning there could be an opening for Wallace.

Clarke’s centre-backs when Scotland qualified by beating Serbia 5-4 on penalties in November were Tierney, Manchester United’s Scott McTominay, a natural midfielder, and Declan Gallagher, a 30-year-old Motherwell defender who was called up for the first time in 2019.

Three Championship defenders were called up this week for the opening World Cup 2022 qualifiers: Grant Hanley (Norwich), Liam Palmer (Sheffield Wednesday) and Scott McKenna (Nottingham Forest).

Wallace admitted he has thought about a potential call-up.

“Yeah, there’s always that motivation,” Wallace said. “I was devastated to get injured, I was hoping to get in a lot of games and maybe put myself in with a shout of getting in there.

“That’s another reason I was

massively disappointed to be injured but that’s a sort of motivation to kick on, put in some good performances and get some good results.

“You do that then hopefully you start to get noticed and you might be in with a chance of selection.”

Millwall have little to play for with nine games left this season with their play-off chances all but over and no danger of a relegation battle.

But, apart from his Scotland ambitions, Wallace wants a strong finish to the campaign to bring that momentum into 2021-22.

He said: “You could look at the table and see we’re so many points off the play-offs and so many points off relegation and say, ‘that’s us middle of the table, that’s where we’re going to finish’.

“But there are still those points to play for and they’re there to be won, you can never rule anything out.
