calls for more infoRMATION on two maudsley deaths

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The care regulator has warned the South London and Maudsely NHS Trust that urgent improvements must be made in a ward where two patients died within two months last year.

In total there were three serious incidents in the Jim Birley Unit at the Maudsley Hospital’s Denmark Hill site, recently relocated from Lewisham, between September and October 2020.

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) assessed the acute mental health ward, which cares for eighteen working-age female adults, in December.

Worrying safety lapses included ‘significant gaps’ in recording patients’ physical health checks - an issue identified as far back as May 2019 by the CQC. Staff also highlighted they needed more training in managing patients’ physical health needs and helping those with substance misuse and addiction.

Inspectors also found evidence the administration of medicine was not always fully recorded, there were not enough staff with current training in basic and immediate life support, some patients lacked up to date risk assessment and care plans at the time of all three serious incidents - again first highlighted in 2019.

Many of the problems are attributed to a “period of instability” in staffing when the ward moved sites and reopened with an all-new team with nursing vacancies and lack of manager.

Both the trust and CQC have emphasised that staffing concerns and safety improvements have already been made including ‘improvements’ to night checks and handover of care.

Some feedback, including from patients, highlighted that staff were supportive and

ward.

“The paper records used during these times still included significant gaps, and were not recorded on the National Early Warning Score (NEWS) charts which make it clear when staff should seek medical advice.

“Staff were also often not recording when they had attempted to check vital signs or physical health but patients have refused.

“It was therefore not clear if staff were meeting the trust policy for physical health monitoring.”

Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman said lessons needed to be learned “sooner rather than later” and highlighted the agonising wait for bereaved families who remain in the dark about what caused their loved ones deaths.

“Two deaths on one ward in such a short space of time sounds the alarm,” she told the

News, saying that she was in contact with the trust’s chair and leadership team about what improvements had already been made. But as yet there are no formal findings on how the tragedies took place.

“The legal process and NHS protocols have to be followed,” she added, “but four months later it is just awful for relatives to still not know what happened.”

When asked if she believed the regular would take effective action, and quick enough, she said: “I believe there has to be a very strict balance between the hospital and CQC having an ongoing relationship and working together to make improvements, and being a fierce independent regulator that holds unannounced visits.”

She said she hoped the regulator would now refocus on in person visits - and not just remotely.

invest in the public transport infrastructure, green energy, town centre renewal and innovation that will not just get our economy going again, but improve all of our lives and help tackle the climate emergency too.

“This includes projects like the Bakerloo Line Extension that could unlock thousands of jobs and homes in Southwark.

“Piecemeal pots of funding do not make up for a decade of cuts to local communities: it just highlights this government’s failure to bring prosperity to our cities and regions.”

UK’s first ever ‘K-Pop Festival’ to be held in Southwark Park?

By Simon Throssell news@southwarknews.co.uk The council will make a decision on whether a Korean Pop festival can take place in Southwark Park this July.

The MIK K-Pop Festival would be ‘the first of its kind in the UK’ say organisers and celebrate the growing popularity of Korean pop music around the world.

However, commercial events at the park in the past have come up against fierce opposition from estates and homes surrounding it.

The organisers, Proud Events, said they have chosen Southwark Park for its ‘excellent transport links and diverse community’ making it the ‘perfect home for the first-ever outdoor K Pop Festival.'

The multi-stage event is scheduled to take place from Saturday 24th to Sunday 25th July 2021 with expected audiences of up to 12,000 per day.

An application has been put in for a premises licence which will allow up to 14,999 people to attend.

The event build would start at the south section of Southwark Park on 16th July and ould be packed away by 29th July.

Ticket holders would be able to enter the outdoor arena from 12pm with alternating stage performances until 10pm.

The bar would close at 9:30pm and audiences wouldbe cleared out by 10:30pm.

In their public consultation deck, which was open to objections until yesterday (Wednesday, March 10) Proud Events outlined their five key priorities for the festival. They said they would make sure the event delivered local benefits through advertisement opportunities and discounted tickets. They claimed they would be able to manage noise from the show

by designing an appropriate sound system and installing a resident telephone line for concerns.

Organisers also said they would manage attendee flow by encouraging the use of public transport and introducing customer flow procedures. They claim they would be minimising the green space used within the park by ‘extending the arena building process out for as long as possible so that the general public can still use the park normally’. as well as taking necessary precautions to protect the trees and green space of the park with a target for 30 per cent recycling.

The organisers have also confirmed that they would set up a community fund of an estimated £20,000 from “mandatory guestlist contributions, from which local community groups can apply for funding for projects that support the community.”

Applications would be available for individuals, charities, organisations and local groups connected to the park and the local area.

An independent panel of ‘ward councillors’ would judge applications, with fifty per cent of the fund being allocated to “support environmentally friendly initiatives and fifty per cent other.”

The full details of the fund would be included on the dedicated event website and the organisers say they would work with Southwark Council to promote it. Proud Events claim the event will generate £696,000 back into the local area through trading opportunities and other revenue streams.

However, some residents have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts against the event, including one user who used the hashtag #ItsANoToKPop. Another questioned whether a “festival of unvaccinated K-pop teens in your backyard is a good idea”.

Rotherhithe boozer will re-open but you only get two hours in their garden

By Simon Throssell news@southwarknews.co.uk The Blacksmiths Arms on Rotherhithe Street will be opening its outdoor areas from April 12 but bookings are only for two hours.

Manager Stephanie contacted the News after reading about The Angel, who are having to open takeaway only due to a lack of appropriate outdoor space.

Stephanie said: “We will be open on Monday 12th April from 4pm for drinks and dinner in our back garden or outside the front.

“Monday 17th May will be opening indoors too.”

She added: “Hopefully this will be the

last lockdown for us.”

The Blacksmiths Arms has a history of famous punters including Horatio Nelson as well as the Queen Mother, who chatted to the locals and even poured her own pint of ale in 1988.

The garden sports a selection of hanging baskets and floor plants plus an array of fairy lights.

Inside the pub still maintains the original fittings and styles of an old century pub including not being able to get any phone signal.

Six leisure centres in Southwark have been awarded ‘Fit for Business’ accreditation for their excellent Covid-19 practices.

Everyone Active has confirmed that their gyms and swimming sessions will be reopening from April 12.

Bookings are due to commence three days prior to re-opening.

The ‘Fit for Business’ certificate recognises the high-quality work the centres have done to ensure Covid-19 risk management and prevention.

The six centres, run by Everyone Active on behalf of Southwark Council, are the first local authority-owned places to achieve the certificate.

They are: Camberwell Leisure Centre (LC), Dulwich LC, Peckham Pulse LC, Surrey Docks Fitness and Water Sports Centre, Seven Islands LC and The Castle Centre.

It has been a challenging year for the leisure industry as indoor centres have been forced to stay closed due to coronavirus restrictions.

Peckham’s highest drinking spot is back in April - but bookings are going fast

People can currently only book a table between 12th April and 16th May as the team makes plans for the summer.

They have assured customers that they will “certainly be extending our booking system across the summer really soon.”

Sat atop the iconic Bussey Building, the bar is the highest drinking spot in Peckham with a stunning 360-degree view of the London skyline.

From April 12, they will be offering a “fully seated, fully covered and fully hosted experience” for groups of up to six people.

Southwark recorded 96 cases that week, a drop of 62 compared to the week before - or 39.2 per cent.

The biggest fall was seen in Haringey, where cases were down by 52.7 per cent, with the smallest in Waltham Forest, which saw infections fall by 16.3 per cent.

Twenty-two of London’s 32 boroughs recorded a drop of at least a third in new COVID-19 cases that week.

The good news came as schools returned on Monday with lateral flow testing in place, and Guy’s Hospital celebrated administering its 100,000th jab with a ‘tunnel of light’ art installation.

Despite the drop in infections, there are still concerns that the most

vulnerable groups are less likely to take up the offer of vaccines, or have been unable to receive them due to being housebound.

As the News reported last week, housebound OAPs in the borough had only just been told they could expect to be contacted this week to find out about their future vaccinations - with no pledges given by the South East London Clinical Commissioning Group on when these would be completed.

London is still languishing behind the rest of the UK on vaccine takeup.

Overall, 85 per cent of the over 70s in London have had jabs, compared to 97 per cent nationwide.

This figure has barely risen in the last few weeks. Yet extra funding to boost the rollout has not been forthcoming from central government.

A new poll from YouGov has shown that one in ten Britons from black or other ethnic minority backgrounds would refuse to have the vaccine, with 45 per cent of them saying there was a lack of information about the vaccine.

Wetherspoons reveals the four Southwark pubs they will open with outdoor space

The list of Southwark Wetherspoon pubs that will reopen are: • The Fox on the Hill, Camberwell • The Capitol, Forest Hill • The Moon & Stars, Penge • The Surrey Docks, Rotherhithe Notable absences from the list include The Rockingham Arms in Elephant and Castle, The Pommelers Rest by Tower Bridge and The Kentish Drovers in Peckham.

It is unlikely that these pubs will re-open from April 12 due to their lack of appropriate outdoor space.

The previous curfew has been lifted meaning the Wetherspoons will be open between 9 am and

9 pm Sunday to Thursday, and 9 am to 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

People will no longer need to order a ‘substantial meal’ with an alcoholic drink but they will have to order, eat and drink seated outside.

Food will be available to order between 9 am and 8 pm with a slightly reduced menu but will still include breakfast, burgers, pizza, deli deals, fish and chips and British classics.

Customers will be able to order and pay through the Wetherspoon app, however, staff will be able to take orders and payment at the table from those who don’t have the app.

The pubs will not be operating a booking system and customers will be able to enter the pub to gain access to the outside area and also to use the toilet.

Test and trace will be in operation and hand sanitisers will be available.

Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson said: “We are looking forward to welcoming our customers and staff back to our pubs.”

Following the news that four Southwark Wetherspoons pubs plan to reopen on April 12, South London-based pub chain Young’s have published their own list.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Criminals are terrorising Aylesbury residents with antisocial behaviour in boarded up, vacant properties that police and the council are struggling to secure.

Double stabbing in Walworth

Two young men were stabbed in Walworth last Friday night.

Officers found the first victim in Burton Grove on the evening of March 5.

Police cars and a helicopter overhead were reported in the area from 9pm onwards.

Soon after another call was received by 999 operators from another victim reporting being stabbed. He had attempted to escape from the attack and was found nearby.

Officers say the two incidents are linked, and the second victim was an ‘associate’ of the first. Their ages have not been published by police but both were described as ‘young men’.

Although no information has been released about the severity of their injuries or current condition, both were taken to hospital. A police cordon was in place in Merrow Street.

Anyone with information should call 101 or, to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers.

Southwark Council’s housing chief, Cllr Stephanie Cryan, said her team were working to track down a leaseholder whose property has been repeatedly targeted and confirmed security was being installed.

“Our housing team were made aware of a seemingly abandoned leaseholder property in the Gayhurst block that was broken into and used for parties and criminal behaviour,” she said.

Police appeal after woman grabbed in Burgess Park

The victim reported the frightening incident shortly after 6.30pm on Thursday, February 25.

The News understands she had been walking in the Chumleigh Gardens area.

Officers say she was not physically

harmed during the ordeal.

The man is described as white, in his early twenties, and approximately 5ft 6ins tall.

He was wearing a red padded jacket and grey tracksuit bottoms.

After the woman screamed, the man made off on foot in the direction of Neate Street.

Many residents, including those suffering long-standing heating and hot water outages and leaks in their homes, are increasingly frustrated by what they say is too little action from Southwark Council and the Met to make the area safe.

As the regeneration continues apace, and more of the estate is dominated by the huge construction site, the tenants who remain say they are becoming increasingly fearful.

One claimed vacant properties in blocks in the low rises were still being broken into and taken over by squatters and ravers because they are inadequately secured by police. She said: “The police were back at one flat on the Friday, the Saturday and the Sunday - and people are still breaking in.

“We’ve been told that if we see the groups doing this not to approach them because they are dangerous.

“The housing people really need to do something about this - it’s out of control.”

Among the flats recently targeted, the News was told, was one privately owned home whose most recent tenant had passed away.

Residents, who asked not to be named due to safety fears, say the property has been vandalised and repeatedly

broken into despite numerous calls to police and it even being boarded up.

In at least one case, the council has struggled to even contact a trashed property’s owner and let them know about the situation.

Eight officers were injured while recovering stolen items at an illegal lockdown party in Portland Street in the early hours of Sunday, February 28. The police chased two robbery suspects to the address and found around 30 people breaking lockdown rules. The officers were subsequently injured in the ruckus that followed.

One was knocked unconscious and another suffered a fractured hand.

It emerged that the property was being used to store stolen goods after a spate of robberies, including mobile phones, oyster cards, and credit cards.

A number of violent muggings have taken place in the surrounding area and, in a particularly serious incident, police were called to a double stabbing near East Street on last Friday, March 5.

Inspector Tom Cornish, Southwark Police’s neighbourhood inspector, said he and his colleagues were working on a “long-term solution” with the council.

“We are very aware of antisocial behaviour linked to a number of vacant flats in the estate and the impact on residents living nearby,” he said.

“Despite efforts to secure the flats trespassers have found means – sometimes very risky ones – of gaining entry.

“We are working with the council on a longer-term solution which will involve clearing the flats in question and enhancing security without hindering fire escape routes.”

A teenager was shot in Peckham on Saturday night.

The victim survived the attack and has since been discharged from hospital.

Police were called to Friary Road at around 7.25pm on March 7, following reports of an injured man.

Kennington man on firearm charge arrested up north A man from Kennington has been charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life after being arrested in Liverpool.

The joint operation between the Met’s Specialist Crime Command and Merseyside Police saw Ibrahim Mohammed arrested in Liverpool’s Edge Lane on Saturday, March 6.

The 22-year-old (b. 25.08.98) from Brook Drive appeared at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Monday, March 8 and was remanded into custody.

Police officer arrested in Kent

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A serving Metropolitan Police officer has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of 33-year-old Sarah Everard.

In a statement published shortly before midnight on Tuesday (March 10), police confirmed the officer had been arrested the same evening at an address in Kent.

A woman was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both remain in custody.

The Met’s Assistant Commissioner Nick Ephgrave described the development as ‘shocking and deeply disturbing’.

Detective Chief Inspector Katherine Goodwin said the investigating team continued to do ‘everything we can’ to find the marketing executive who vanished while walking from Clapham to Brixton last Wednesday night.

“This is a significant development in our inquiry,” she said.

“This is a fast moving investigation and we are doing everything we can to find Sarah. We have seen an overwhelming response from the public and I repeat my request for anyone with information that may be relevant to come forward, no matter how insignificant it may seem.”

Assistant Commissioner Nick Ephgrave said: “The arrest this evening is a serious and significant development.

“We will continue to work with all speed on this investigation but the fact that the arrested man is a serving Metropolitan Police officer is both shocking and deeply disturbing.

“I understand there will be significant public concern but it is essential that the investigative team are given the time and space to continue their work.”

Sarah, a marketing executive, left a friend’s home in Leathwaite Road through a back gate onto the A205 South Circular and began walking to her home address in Brixton at around 9pm last Wednesday (March 3).

She is thought to have walked across Clapham Common and was expected to arrive home approximately 50 minutes later. It is unclear if she returned to her home address. She has not been seen or heard from since.

She was identified on CCTV footage, alone, walking on the Poynders Road (A205) from the junction with Cavendish Roadin the direction of Tulse Hill.

A cafe owner on Great Suffolk Street is pleading with Southwark Council to reverse the road changes he says could result in a fatality at any moment.

New data has revealed that Southwark has seen a 23% increase in lockdown bike thefts, with just 1.1% of thefts resulting in the thief being caught.

Austin Yardley, the owner of Terry’s Cafe, said that confusing signs on the entry into Great Suffolk Street had caused a ‘few near misses with lorries and cyclists.’

Southwark Council introduced Low Traffic Neighbourhood style measures after observing a “high density of traffic and speeding of vehicles… making active travel less safe.”

Based on their ‘observations and community feedback’, the council introduced a one-way system and installed a number of no entry and banned left and right turn signs.

However, Mr Yardley maintains that he received no contact from the council.

Speaking to the News, Austin said: “Someone has come to this decision and honest to God, it’s outrageous.

“Great Suffolk Street has always been a main street in the area with its parade of shops so this defies all logic.”

Anecdotally, Mr Yardley has spoken to residents and other businesses who share his frustrations and have had to make ‘significant’ detours to their usual routes.

“The road signs are confusing meaning that three and a half-ton lorries are being forced to do threepoint turns in the middle of the road.

“My concern is that there will be a fatality as I see a few near misses every day.

“Cyclists seem to think it’s their right of way and just the other day I saw one arguing with a skip lorry driver.”

Great Suffolk Street was identified as a key cycling route by the council as it connects cycleways CS7, Q1 and C4.

It is also a popular walking route providing access to the Tate Modern on Sumner Street.

Austin hopes that these measures, which “should never have been put in in the first place”, will be reversed to benefit businesses, residents and to prevent any serious incidents from happening.

Cllr Catherine Rose, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Environment and Roads, said: “We are currently investigating concerns raised by residents and other interested parties about Great Suffolk Street.”

Waltham Forest is the borough with the greatest increase at almost one third (30.88%), followed by Haringey (27.52%) and Southwark (23.92%).

London Bridge and Lordship Lane are two of the bike theft hotspots in Southwark.

Residents have taken to social media to vent their anger, with one member reporting their bike being stolen from a secure locker on Albion Street in Rotherhithe.

Bike thieves have been targeting new bikes bought as a result of the cycling ‘boom’ during the lockdown.

With only 1.1% of bike thefts resulting in prosecution, nicking a bike is considered a relatively ‘low-risk’ crime.

As restrictions are lifted and the weather improves, experts warn that these thefts will only continue.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, Katherine Johnston highlights just some of the women who have stepped up to support Southwark throughout the pandemic...

Ola has been there for vulnerable women Described as a ‘one-stop shop’ for vulnerable women, LOVO is a community interest company running for around a decade across Southwark, with particular emphasis in Camberwell and Peckham, and working with women from marginalised groups.

Founder Ola Stephen says when COVID-19 first hit, her team were faced with the difficult decision to move all services online.

“This was quite challenging for some of the local women we served, but it had to be done for the safety of all,” she says.

They set up regular, follow-up phone calls and ensure people knew where to get information, advice and support, as well as a weekly, online COVID-19 peer support group. I personally had to work extra hours

to provide a telephone befriending service for some very distressed women, outside the normal working hours,” she says.

“I remember receiving a call at about 5pm from a woman who was feeling very depressed, tearful and lonely, as she had to leave her home in Southwark due to a domestic violence situation to another unfamiliar borough.

“She had been referred by her GP but called towards my closing hour. I knew I had to attend to her for the next two hours, just to listen, calm and support her as a qualified mental health first aider.

“Now she is in a much better place and coping well. I can’t imagine what she could have done to herself if I never attended to her that day, considering the time constraint.” www.lovo.org.uk/who-we-are

Bola, a Southwark Council employee and long-standing member of the Southwark Christian Network, was inspired to help volunteer more during the pandemic.

Helping a hidden and silent community Sis Marcia and Sis Stella coordinated a team of volunteers throughout the pandemic to deliver culturally specific food, befriending and support services.

This includes helping to dispel stigma and myths, and ensuring people know where and how to access support.

Sis Stella explains: “We have been helping people who were already disengaged from mainstream services before the pandemic to avoid dropping through the system and becoming more vulnerable. Through our ongoing health and wellbeing emergency food delivery and befriending programme we have built trust from a grass roots level.

“We have discovered a “hidden” and “silent” community existing in Southwark, who simply must not be ignored.

“COVID-19 has revealed a range of inequalities amongst African heritage communities, who are at risk but not engaging.

“We have identified users who tell us they are isolated and lonely as a result of being disengaged. We realised from an early stage in the Pandemic that Black people were more at risk of being infected and dying from covid and after losing the several community members we jumped into

action to ensure that our community was eating correctly, as they lacked Vitamin D. “We sourced vitamin D supporting foods, from allotments, local shops and projects started an emergency food distribution service for the most vulnerable households who had been asking us to help them.

At first they were supporting twelve households - a figure that has grown to 80.

On the horizon are hopes to create a social supermarket or community store.

Sis Stella’s family now has five generations of frontline workers and volunteers working throughout the pandemic.

“My two daughters are on the front line, one is a bus driver with a young son, my granddaughter is working in an essential food place, and her great-grandfather who is also a Southwark resident is nearly 90 years old and took himself to get his vaccination!

“My grand-niece, who is expecting twin girls, is also working in essential services.

“That’s five generations of an AfricanCaribbean family working on the frontline during this pandemic to keep others safe.”

They say key to achieving is being seen as experts in their field.

“Grassroots does not equate to unqualified. We are experienced in our fields, we are qualified and sometimes

overqualified but historically have been excluded not just by white men but by white women also who see us as a threat.

“It's a form of attack, like being abused, when we are ignored and left out.

“Yes we are passionate because, historically, structurally and institutionally it has been proven that our communities have been discriminated against.

“Hopefully COVID has awakened people to the fact that we need each other.”

“I approached my church and volunteered at the food bank initiative that is held every Saturday at the Pepys Resource Centre in Rotherhithe,” she says.

She also works as an education officer at Old Kent Road’s mosque and Islamic Cultural Centre. Her background is in psychology, and she holds a master’s in educational autism.

“At 6am every Thursday morning during lockdown I can be found in Tesco on the Old Kent Road, getting essentials into bags to be hand out to households who are elderly or vulnerable,” she says.

“Ensuring these residents have their five a day essential foodstuffs is vital to keep them going through this pandemic.”

“Myself and my team are mindful of the social isolation policy and always knock, leave the food parcels by the front door and

Kathleen is Southwark’s Active Citizen of the Year A self-described “always a community person”, Kathleen will be well recognised by readers for her love of community events.

Whether bringing bingo and tea dancing to the elderly, holding fun days on the estate’s green, or putting on Christmas and Halloween parties for local children, she has been at the heart of Bermondsey's community for many years.

“This all came to an end March 2020,” says the founder of Love North Southwark, a newly registered CIC made official in December last year.

“So, we started the food bank with fresh food twice a week.”

Soon she and other volunteers were

serving up to 200 people every Tuesday and Friday in Bermondsey and expanded the project to start delivering food parcels, too.

“We found we were helping people that had lost their jobs or were waiting on Universal Credit, and we also took on families who were victims of domestic violence families and homeless.

“After a few different locations we are at the moment based at Cherry Garden Hall in Jamaica road We are hopeful that we will get our own space soon, so better things can be achieved.”

In a big step, she has helped set up a food pantry which opened on February 16, offering fifteen items of fresh fruit, veg, dairy, tinned food, breakfast items

and some frozen products for a flat fee of £5. We had fourteen on our first week and are expecting over 20 this week as more people get to hear about us,” she says.

Love North Southwark formally registered as a community interest company in December 2020, to help generate more funding.

Kathleen says they operate on a ‘shoestring’ but despite the difficult economic climate the community continues to show its generous spirit.

“We also ran a toy drive for Christmas with an appeal to the Bermondsey people to buy a new toy for the children of Bermondsey to wake up with a Christmas present. We sent 103 Christmas presents out. This was one of my favourite times - to

think we made so many families and their children happy that day.”

Kathleen was given the Keib Thomas Active Citizen of the year award in 2020.

She says she is inspired by a very strong woman in her life - her 87-year-old mum.

Despite working hard all her life, Kathleen says her mother did not receive a good pension - something she hopes is changing for the better.

“Women have come a long way over the last ten years,” she reflects.

“They have better job opportunities and are gradually getting recognised.

“My other wish would be to have women road cleaners. I feel they would make a better job of keeping our street cleaner and recycling better - just my thoughts.”

To date I have delivered 400 goody bags to care homes and vulnerable residents around Southwark, as well as helping with food shopping, banking, doctor and dentist appointments, befriending and cleaning.”

She adds: “When I spoke to residents last year, many of them were not able to go and see their family as the restrictions were in place. They were so happy to receive the gifts from Age UK. Some did not have any Christmas gifts.”

She estimates she has delivered hundreds, if not thousands, of parcels since March last year. Looking to the future, she would like to focus on sport programmes to help women and young people get fit.

Appeal hearing could see more social housing at Elephant and Castle

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A Court of Appeal hearing against a previous High Court decision in favour of the Elephant and Castle regeneration scheme will be held next week.

The public, online hearing is scheduled for two days starting on Tuesday, March 16.

Planning permission for the demolition and regeneration of the shopping centre was approved by Southwark Council in 2019. A High Court challenge against landlord and developer Delancey’s £1.3bn plans was unsuccessful, with Mr Justice Dove refusing to quash the planning approval.

The appeal has been mounted by the 35% campaign’s Jerry Flynn, with support from campaigners Up the Elephant.

As the demolition has already begun, the hearing’s focus is on the number of homes in the new development for social rent - currently 116 after concerted lobbying from housing activists. Previously this figure was zero.

Campaigners also believe another 42 council homes could be included on the site with funding from City Hall.

A rally in support of the campaign will be held online the same morning.

Mr Flynn told the News: “Delancey may have already begun the demolition, but the battle for what is to be built is not over. Southwark is not getting as much social rented housing from Delancey as it should be, while the need for it has become even more acute. Delancey are not building the homes and new shops that local people need. Their planning permission should be quashed and homes and shops that local people can afford built instead.”

Paul Heron, solicitor from the Public Interest Law Centre said the case raised important legal issues for regeneration projects across London.

“One concern is that Southwark council, and many councils like them, are failing to maximise social housing in these developments,” he explained.

“Another concern is that councillors are failing in their duties – far too much power is being given to unelected council officials in the decision-making process.

This has to stop otherwise there will be a democratic deficit in planning law”.

The council and Delancey say they are committed to creating a new town centre which includes improved transport links, a new campus for London College of Communication, and building affordable housing on a site where previously there was none.

Police search for teenage boy who exposed himself to three young girls

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A teenage boy is believed to be behind two sexual assaults on girls under the age of thirteen in Peckham Rye Park.

The first reported victim was approached by the male at around 5pm on New Year’s Eve. Her attacker exposed himself before attempting to sexually assault her. He ran off when she screamed.

A second incident was reported at around 4pm last Tuesday, March 2, when the suspect exposed himself in front of two girls and then performed a lewd act.

The man is described as being ‘Asian’,

having black wavy, or curly, hair and between 5ft 2 inches and 5ft 4 in height.

His first victim described him as wearing a brown or black padded jacket, black trousers and black shoes.

The second report described him as wearing a black, hooded top with a white circle on the shoulder and white drawstrings.

He was wearing tracksuit bottoms.

The victims and their families are now being supported by specialist officers and patrols in the park have been upped in recent weeks.

Detective Inspector Richard Poynter urged anyone who recognises the description, or may have witnessed the incidents, to contact police.

He said: “I understand that incidents of this

nature are both shocking and concerning for the local community.

“I want to reassure local residents that since these two offences were reported to us we have increased uniformed patrols in and around the park.

“If you have any information about who this person could be it is imperative that you get in touch with us as soon as possible.

“Likewise if you have observed a young man acting suspiciously in the park matching the description given please make contact.”

With the government hoping all legal limits on social contact will be removed in June, event organisers Tommy’s have decided to delay the run from May to August.

Molly Nana, 11, was diagnosed with PIMS-TS, a very rare COVID-19 related condition in children.

The condition affects the blood vessels around the heart, and can be successfully treated with antiinflammatory drugs.

Molly’s mum, Sarah Barry, said: “I hadn’t seen Molly like that before.

She’s usually so chilled out so it was very out of character for her to be demonstrating how poorly she felt.

“She looked grey, had a headache and a temperature but then she started shaking and vomiting so I took her to our local hospital.”

Doctors initially suspected Molly had meningitis but as her condition worsened, she was quickly sent to the paediatric intensive care unit at Evelina London.

After three days in the unit and a

night on the ward, Molly was able to go home on New Year’s Eve; much to the joy of her Mum and Dad. “Molly has recovered really well and is continuing to be monitored through regular check-ups,” said Sarah.

“We are eternally grateful to Evelina London because they saved her life.”

Molly’s dad, Simon, is aiming to raise £5,000 by cutting off his hair to thank them for what they have done.

He has been growing his dreadlocks for fifteen years, which are now a whopping ninety-two centimetres long.

Simon said: “This is my way of saying ‘thank you’ to the amazing staff at Evelina London who saved Molly’s life.

“I’ll do whatever it takes to support them, and to raise awareness of PIMS-TS so other families get the right diagnosis and treatment."

Golden Globe winner John Boyega has helped a Peckham school reach its goal of giving every student a laptop.

Camelot Primary School, on Bird and Bush Road, launched an appeal in January to purchase a laptop for each of its children.

The school wanted to tackle the digital divide affecting many of its pupils who didn’t own something appropriate for online education.

After raising its first target of £5000 very quickly, donations began to dry up but the needs of the children remained.

On one ‘very exciting’ day in February, the school were contacted by Peckhamborn Boyega’s team offering a ‘significant amount of support' towards the cause.

Head Teacher James Robinson said: “Within days we were as excited as he was at the Golden Globe Awards earlier this week!

“He is an example to all our children, to our community and to our local area about remembering what an impact we can make through our generosity and recognition of others and their efforts.”

James added: “Camelot School is exceptionally grateful to John Boyega and looks forward to welcoming him to our school when he is next in Peckham.”

In an email to the school, Boyega’s manager wrote: “Before lockdown we started a project where we wanted to give back to the young people in Southwark as that’s where John grew up, so this was a great opportunity to support.”

rotherhithe Shopkeeper gets queen’s letter for ‘exceptional contribution’ during lockdown A Rotherhithe shopkeeper was in 'tears for three' hours after receiving a letter on behalf of the Queen for his ‘exceptional contribution to life’ in London.

Vimal Pandya, who works at Halai General Stores on Gwent Court, selflessly helped 55 families with free deliveries and emotional support on the phone.

The rush of panic buying during the first lockdown meant that many of Vimal’s vulnerable customers were worried about coming into his shop.

Seeing these people like his family, Vimal took it upon himself to go to the cash and carry every morning and stand in very long queues to make sure that he had plenty of stock.

He would put a notice on his door inviting people to call him for a free delivery, which he would do on foot until 11:30 PM at night most evenings.

Vimal didn’t want to take advantage of his customers during this difficult time so would charge people the lowest cost price and let them pay when they were able to.

On his day off, Mr Pandya would speak to families for hours on the phone and offer a listening ear.

Word of Vimal’s outstanding community service quickly spread and on 12th February this year , he received a letter from Sir Kenneth Olisa, the Queen’s personal representative in Greater London.

The letter read: “It has come to my attention that you are one of those people who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help others during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I am therefore writing to personally

Children from a church in Kennington have written a prayer thanking the ‘hard working staff of St Thomas’ Hospital’.

Eighteen young voices from St Anselm’s church performed the prayer during their online service on Sunday 28th February.

‘Our Prayer For You’ uses the children’s own words and feelings to thank hospital staff for ‘everything they have done to care for and protect local residents during the pandemic.’

Composed with the help of Becky Chambers, leader of the St Anselm’s Young Voices Choir, the prayer says: “You are so strong and gentle too / The heroes of our generation / We look up to you.

“We pray things will get easier and that you can stay brave / We pray that God will keep you safe and strong / We pray for your families that you leave at home / We pray you find the strength to carry on.”

shaun gets freedom of the city

An inspirational former Alfred Salter Primary teacher and LGBT+ campaigner has been given the Freedom of the City of London.

Shaun Dellenty, a former deputy head at Alfred Salter Primary, came out as gay to his pupils in 2009.

A tireless advocate for inclusion in education across the globe, Shaun was previously handed the Freedom of Southwark by the mayor in 2016; the highest civic honour in the borough.

He received his latest accolade this week at an online ceremony held by the City of London Corporation, with current mayor of Southwark Barrie Hargrove and councillors including Dora Dixon-Fyle MBE. Shaun decided to come out at school due to hearing homophobic language being used around the school.

His experience also led him

to create the ground-breaking education programme ‘Inclusion For All’ variations of which he has now delivered to over 90,000 educators in the UK. He told the News: "It is a huge privilege to work with apprentices at the City of London Corporation each year, sharing my personal and professional journey with them to inspire them to explore their own voices as voices for positive change.

“To be bestowed the Freedom of London enables me to connect with the lineage, history and traditions of a city I made my home in over twenty years ago and in which I found myself and my treasured community.

"I am deeply touched and grateful."

Comment The budget papers over the cracks

L

ast week’s Tory government budget was a huge betrayal for residents and businesses right across my constituency.

This country was crying out for a budget to put the country on the road to recovery and right the wrongs of the last decade by rebuilding our economic foundations. But this budget just papers over the cracks.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit our economy and our public services had been weakened by ten years of Tory and Lib Dem austerity.

The independent Office of Budget Responsibility has confirmed that the Tory government’s mismanagement of the pandemic has left Britain with the worst economic crisis of any major economy.

The UK economy was hit hardest as we had longer and stricter restrictions than other countries because the Tories failed to get the virus under control, even while spending more than £22 billion on a failing privatised Test and Trace system that has never worked effectively.

The budget contains no plan for the NHS recovery so we can get people the health care they badly need, nothing for the cancer backlog and a cut in funds for desperately needed equipment and

There was also no mention of schools or teachers. Or restoring Britain’s high streets, which have been hard hit by the pandemic.

Meanwhile the Tories are freezing pay for many of the key workers who have got us through this crisis, offering an insulting one per cent increase to nurses and other NHS workers and forcing through a council tax hike that will hit hard-pressed households across the country.

This budget showed that the Conservatives want to go back to the same insecure economy and unequal country that’s been so

cruelly exposed by the virus.

A Labour Budget would have put the NHS, social care and the environment at the centre of a fair, green recovery.

It would have had a plan to rebuild the foundations of our economy for the long term, with a relentless focus on supporting sustainable new jobs across the whole of the UK, supporting our high streets to thrive, protecting family finances and recognising the sacrifice and hard work of the key workers who have seen us through the pandemic.

We need to learn the lessons of this pandemic, not go back to the insecurity of the past. But the Tories have the wrong priorities and are totally out of touch with what this country needs.

M

onday March 8 was International Women’s Day – a day to celebrate women but also a day to reflect and act on the challenges we continue to face.

Over the past few decades real progress has been made for women’s rights but the pandemic threatens to reverse many of those hard won gains - internationally, nationally and right here in Southwark.

COVID has widened the gap even further between women and men – women are doing more unpaid work, more childcare and were more likely to be furloughed then men. And for so many women, home has not been a safe place as domestic abuse levels have soared.

As we start to look beyond the pandemic, we must ensure the impact on women is front and centre of decision-making and their voices are heard. We’ll be making sure that happens here in Southwark and the Government must do the same.

These are some of the things we will focus on as a council, building on a strong record in this area.

Tackling Violence: In 2019, we published a new plan to tackle violence against women and girls and Cllr Leanne Werner was recently appointed to head up our efforts to end Domestic Abuse. We’ll continue to have zero-tolerance on domestic abuse, making sure survivors do not

end up without a home, and ensuring they have the support they need. We’re working with our communities to tackle the shocking levels of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and we’re campaigning to get misogyny made a hate crime because we know it works to improve women’s safety.

Jobs and Employment: Women are more likely to be in insecure or temporary work and to work in areas like hospitality or retail, which have been hit hard by the pandemic. We’ll continue to invest in programmes to support women into work and to support women-led businesses. We’ll also encourage businesses to publish their gender pay, request all our contractors (with 50+ employees) to do so and continue to do so as a council.

Equal representation: The Cabinet team that leads Southwark Council is 77 per cent women. That matters – when women are at the decision making table they bring contributions that help make policies and decisions that work better for all. But, women’s voices are too often ignored. Political parties need to have quotas to ensure better representation of women and other under-represented

groups. We must tackle the online abuse, which too many women in public life face. Beyond politics, we have to understand and address the barriers stopping women getting more involved in their communities.

We also need to better understand the different experiences of women because women are not experiencing the crisis equally; Black, Asian and minority ethnic women, women with disabilities, working class women are likely to be experiencing even worse impacts. So, we also need to hear and learn from women across the borough. This is why we are supporting a new women’s community network and will do more to engage women across the whole borough as we make and shape policies.

Whilst women have been hard hit, they have continued to lead from the front.

In my role, I have seen the incredible contribution women across our borough are making– from delivering food to campaigning for change to simply offering support to each other. That continues a long tradition that I know will continue – with women fighting for their rights every single day, not just on International Women’s Day.

Letter to the editor The plan to put social housing on the corner of Russia Walk and Roberts Close in Rotherhithe was, as you report, "hugely controversial." But, for the record, the reasons for the strong opposition need some clarification.

There were three grounds: first, social segregation, in that these "affordable" homes are as far removed as can be from the private homes located next to the underground and shops at Canada Water.

Secondly, the intrusive impact of the block on the adjacent Stave Hill ecology park and Russia Dock woodland. Thirdly over-development, as you say: the fact that the council's own Area Action Plan put the small site down as suitable for 28 units, not the 79 now approved.

Is the development "beautifully designed", as the now disgraced Leo Pollak claims? I prefer to believe the grim image in your paper.

A general point: the planners are currently going through a consultation process to establish a New Southwark Plan. What is the point if the council can then ignore it when it suits them, as they did with the Area Action Plan?

In the same way mayor Khan nodded the Canada Water scheme through even though his London Plan declares against social seclusion and in favour of mixed and balanced communities. Are these plans just play-acting?

Aylesbury Estate is not the first major regeneration project - surely more can be done to protect its residents?

W

hatever your view on the Aylesbury Estate regeneration, the impact of living among empty homes and next to a giant building site for residents who remain is huge.

The project is decades in the making and it was entirely foreseeable that antisocial behaviour and crime would flourish after the diggers first came in. We’ve seen this happen before - in the Heygate and further back with the development of the North Peckham Estate.

Once properties are empty and boarded up it creates a feeling of abandonment, and for the people who still call the estate home, isolation. Focusing too much on the next ten, twenty, or thirty years of the estate’s future is ignoring the people living on it right now, and what they deserve.

Many flats in the wider estate are home to people in temporary accommodation - truly some of the most vulnerable men, women and children in our society.

Some tenants’ families have lived in the estate since it was built and are part of a tightknit community. They are rightly fed up of the estate, throughout the years, being labelled a sink estate and crime ridden. The estate and its community has been so much more than that.

However, the problems it faces are significant.

It’s just such a shame that residents are being let down twice.

They’re let down by antisocial people and criminals taking advantage of the dilapidated buildings.

But they are also let down by the council and police, who have failed to get a handle on the situation for far too long. This is not Southwark first major regeneration project - they should be able to have worked out a better way to protect people left on half demolished estates.

And like everything else this problem would be bad enough in normal times but is made worse during the pandemic. Let’s not forget the headlines we ran last summer of raves night after night in Burgess Park and the continuing problems with heating and hot water these residents have already faced.

History

See the lost treasures of the Thames in a book and possibly a museum A beautifully illustrated book telling the captivating story of London and its inhabitants through the extraordinary assortment of artefacts discovered by mudlarks along the banks of the River Thames has recently been released – but could it be a precursor to an actual museum?

The answer is yes. Plans for the Thames Museum are currently in the concept phase only as the mudlarks are without a site, writes Kevin Quinn…

In recent years the trustees of the proposed museum have exhibited in the Oxo Tower and the Tate Modern – and they are eager to find a home on the south bank of the River Thames.

Twice a day as the murky tidal waters of the river slowly recede, the exposed riverbed becomes the longest archaeological site in Britain.

This fact alone makes you wonder why a museum of this kind was not established years ago.

Unique, historically significant artefacts are continually being found in the river, and the Thames Museum will be a place for academics, visitors and school children to research and learn from these extraordinary finds. Currently they are being held in numerous places from the Museum of London to a single mudlark’s home or shed. And some of the most fascinating finds are rarely getting a showing.

“Hands-on history will be the most important aspect of the Thames Museum,” says Nick Stevens, who alongside fellow mudlark Steve Brooker, conceived of the idea. “So, the museum would be ideally located along the river with daily guided tours using the foreshore as a classroom and designed for people to get their hands dirty and discover archaeology for themselves.

“Therefore,” he added. “The Thames Museum’s collections will be forever changing. With new discoveries being made on a daily basis, each visit will be different from the last. Visitors who participate in the tours of the foreshore will be able to add to the museum’s collections themselves.”

Nick Stevens, who is also professional photographer and will be known to fans of the History Channel’s ‘Mud Men’ teamed up a with fellow member of the Society of Thames Mudlarks Jason Sandy to release their book ‘Thames Mudlarking: Searching for London’s Lost Treasures’ last month.

This fascinating new book is packed with 160 incredible photographs of intriguing

objects discovered by over 50 mudlarks.

Each offers a clue to the past and gives us a glimpse at London from megalodon teeth to Roman coins, Georgian shoe buckles and shrapnel from the Blitz.

Yet it is only part of the multitude of finds that could be displayed if they had their very own museum. “We have well over 100,000 artefacts but not all are ever on display at the same time and the wonderful thing about them is they are often in pristine condition,” Jason Sandy explained to the News. “Over the past 2,000 years countless objects have been intentionally discarded or accidentally dropped into the Thames. These lost objects have been protected and preserved in the dense, anaerobic mud, which is oxygen-free, so when we find them they are in the same condition as they were when they were dropped in.”

And both Nick and Jason said they might not have moved from the very spot in which they were discarded. So, these objects; often mundane, give you a glimpse into the lives of Londoners from thousands of years ago to a jilted lover throwing an engagement ring into the water just ten years ago.

London only became a city because of the river which took people and goods from its shores out to the sea and across the globe. When London was the largest port in the world, the congested river was filled with ships and boats of all sizes, from large ocean-going vessels to small rowboats with watermen transporting passengers from one side of the river to the other. For eleven continuous miles in London, both sides of the river were densely packed with docks, wharves, warehouses, shipbuilding yards, shipbreaking yards, fish markets, factories, breweries, slaughterhouses, taverns and public houses. vibrant riverfront was home to countless watermen, lightermen, stevedores, dockworkers, sailors, merchants, fishermen, fishmongers, oyster wives, shipbuilders, shipbreakers and mudlarks themselves.

In fact the original mudlark would have come from the poorest of the poor in London’s 18th and 19th century, scavenging the foreshores for items to sell on. So, the south bank and perhaps the area around Shad Thames, Jacob’s Island so brilliantly portrayed as the home of the fictitious character of Fagin in Charles Dicken’s Oliver Twist, would more than likely have been home to early mudlarks.

With this in mind today’s mudlarks once hoped to get their hands on the former Design Museum after it left its home of 24 years. The museum had been converted from a banana-ripening warehouse at Shad Thames. It was bought by the late architect Zaha Hadid, who died unexpectedly of a heart attack in 2016, but a prolonged legal battle that has only recently been resolved prevented it from being a serious contender.

“If we could find a home or even land we would open up tomorrow. The south bank of the river is ideal, not just because of its history, but because it has such good footfall, it’s already an area for visitors and the Thames foreshore is more accessible on the south side than the north,” Nick explained.

The Thames Museum is currently a registered charity and they have explored other ideas like a wooden platform in the river itself or a temporary space where they could construct sea containers. So far, no joy; but they hope that local authorities like Southwark and Lambeth might support their proposal if a site became available. “To make a museum viable you need to attract at least 200 people a day.

When we exhibited at the Oxo Tower we had 6,000 people come in just the five days it was open. It was the most popular exhibition they have had at the Barge House,” Nick told the News.

Certainly since the Society of Thames Mudlarks & Antiquarians was founded in 1980 those interested in mudlarking has grown year on year.

Owned by one of the first ever Londoners, this style of flint tool is native only to the Thames Valley.

It came from here and was made here by early settlers long before the Roman’s established a city on our banks. ‘Adze’ is a reference to the blade which runs across from left to right (similar to a pick axe) and would be used to chop wood and build houses.

A Roman intaglio carved from a semi-precious carnelian gemstone depicting a ship and rowers.

This decorative item could have been worn around the neck or in a ring. Intaglio refers to an impression being made in wax and became very popular again over a thousand years later with the Georgrians. But this was definately from a Roman man or woman, perhaps a merchant owner of a fleet of ships or even a ship builder, although whoever owned it had to be pretty wealthy.

To go mudlarking in London, you need a mandatory Thames Foreshore Permit from the Port of London Authority. All objects over 300 years old must be reported to the Museum of London.

For twenty four years between 1648 until 1672 the Royal Mint was not producing enough cooper, so traders started produced their own coinage. They were short of change and this is from an inn, pub or Tavern in Southwark. Surprisingly it was recognised by the Royal Mint and this is a farthing. It was good for the traders

Others including half penny pieces have also benn found, but this is the only find from the Dogg and Ducke and we can tell from the initials that it was an establishment run by perhaps an Edward Smith and his wife Margaret.

In 2018, over 69,600 artefacts found in Britain were recorded on the PAS online database (finds.org.uk), which contains records for over 1.5 million objects discovered by members of the public.

Before the lockdown the News ventured

out with Bermondsey’s very own mudlark Alan Murphy, who displays some his finds at Sands Films in Rotherhithe. There our reporter was allowed to hold the tooth of a woolly mammoth that once roamed Rotherhithe and feel the sharp cutting edge of a Mesolithic flint axe.

A medieval skeleton wearing a pair of thigh-high leather boots found during excavations for the new super sewer in Bermondsey over two years ago led to speculation he was an early mudlark.

The skeleton, discovered face down in mud at the Chambers Wharf was believed to have died during the late 15th Century while carrying out work near the river.

The rare find by the Museum of London Archaeologists (MOLA) had one arm above his head and the other bent back on itself to the side. This led them to believe the man was not buried but quickly covered by mud after falling or drowning 500 years ago.

Beth Richardson, finds specialist at MOLA, said the boots indicated “how he may have made his living in hazardous and difficult conditions”.

They would have been an expensive item normally passed on to others and, the fact they could extend to the thigh, meant they would have worked as waders, suggesting he could have been a tools, tea caddy locks, and described the mayhem that cannonballs created when they pierced the side of a ship. He spoke of Southwark’s primitive forefathers making the weapons to hunt and the tools to butcher animals by the old Chambers Wharf and showed off the groats and ships’ nails and an array of plain and ornate clay pipes he had discovered on the foreshore of the Thames.

Each exhibition piece, preserved in time by Thames mud, had its own story to tell and you can see Alan’s permanent exhibition in the Picture Library at Sands Films, 82 St Marychurch Street, SE16 4HZ. Admission is free, so when the lockdown is over and they open it again, it is well worth a visit, even if only to a get a glimpse into the idea of what the Thames Museum could be like; and why it should become a reality.

If true it would be extraordinary indeed, as what we do know is that Mudlarking as a profession started in the late 18th and then into the 19th century, and was the name given to people scavenging for things on the riverbank and selling them.

Often children, renowned for their tattered clothes and terrible stench, they were mostly boys, who would earn a few pennies selling things like coal, nails, rope and bones.

A mudlark is described as pretty much coming from the poorest level of society, but was a recognised occupation until the early 20th century. Although in 1904 a person could still claim ‘mudlark’ as his occupation, it seems to have been no longer viewed as an acceptable or lawful pursuit. By 1936 the word is used merely to describe swimsuited schoolchildren earning pocket money during the summer holidays, by asking passers-by to throw coins into the Thames mud, which they then chased, much to the amusement of the onlookers.

A ‘SAFE PLACE’ FOR PATIENTS WHO ARE HOMELESS AFTER HOSPITAL STAY PEOPLE WHO are homeless and due to be discharged from hospital are being offered temporary housing to ensure they have a safe space to recover while freeing up urgently needed NHS beds.

The patients, who no longer need a hospital bed but are considered too clinically vulnerable to be discharged to the streets after leaving hospital, are provided with health care and help to find housing thanks to the service offered by Guy’s and St Thomas’ and The Salvation Army.

During the pandemic five rooms which house the specialist beds have been opened at The Salvation Army’s St Ann’s building in Westminster, to provide temporary housing for people. A specialist nurse and a housing worker (known as a ‘housing navigator’) from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Homeless Health Team visit the patients twice a week to offer support with health concerns, social and emotional needs, and to help residents move on to longer-term housing accommodation.

We signpost people to the services that can give them ongoing support including legal and housing support and alcohol and drug services. In doing so we can support people to get back on their feet and make a fresh start.”

‘I loved football that much – no one was going to stop me’

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL LIONESSES manager Katie Whitmore has outlined some of the “obstacles” she faced growing up playing with boys – and how regular trips to The Den fired her ambition.

Whitmore took over Millwall in July 2020, charged with continuing to rebuild a club that was demoted from the second to the sixth tier of English football after the breakaway of the previous board to form London City Lionesses.

But that kind of challenge suits Whitmore, given her background.

Whitmore was a regular at The Den with her family, and her father, who worked nights, also brought her to training and games at weekends after she started playing at the age of six.

Speaking on International Women’s Day on Millwall’s podcast, Wall Talk, she described how important Millwall’s ground was to her when she was growing

up.

“The Den hosted an England-Wales fixture, a women’s international that I came to. Seeing you’re able to play at these stadiums – okay, there weren’t as big crowds – but ultimately it was quite big for us,” Whitmore said.

“It was always a case of if I couldn’t make it in the women’s game would there be an opportunity for me to make it within the men’s game, whether it be coaching or a different role? How hard would that be?

“Unfortunately growing up that stigma was still there within the women’s game and with girls playing football.

“But because role models were coming through – okay, not as strong as they are now – it allowed me to think, ‘no, if I want to do it I’ve just got to be determined, there are going to be obstacles to overcome’.

“Coming to the games made me want it that little bit more. Coming down [to The Den] played a big part because it made you see the environment you had

around you. Okay, it’s got a little bit of a reputation but we always felt safe – if we didn’t my dad wouldn’t have taken me.

“I played at Leyton Orient at the time when I was coming here to watch the games. I was playing at Orient from the age of six, but at that age you’re playing as a hobby and you don’t really know where you’re going to go with it.

“For me it was about staying within that environment because if you drop out of that environment you lose the vision you originally had of where you wanted to go.”

Whitmore described how important the encouragement was from the adults around her, including her family and teachers.

And her own determination.

“I was the only girl playing in my school team so you had to overcome that obstacle of, it’s okay to pass the ball to me, I’m not going to mess it up,” she said.

“Once they realised that you kind of felt you were all right, they were fine with it.

for the 2021-22 campaign, including the Sky Bet Championship, League One and League Two as well as May’s playoffs.

Those play-offs will once again be at Wembley Stadium and conclude the season across two weekends in May. The League One final will kick off the drama on Saturday, May 21, 2022, before League Two and the Championship take centre stage the following weekend on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29, respectively.

The EFL announced the key dates across the league and its competitions

“But there’s that added pressure of not wanting to let anyone down. And it’s not just necessarily your team-mates, it’s the family view whether or not the girl should be on the team.

“All the PE teachers I’ve ever had have always been encouraging. They always pushed me to do it. I remember when I started secondary school my PE teacher put me into district trials.

“The key for me was primary school, when I was the only girl, and the PE teachers always supported that. I was hardly ever subbed or just put on or put in goal. A girl would often be a goalkeeper just because it’s a position that they then didn’t need to worry about, or you’d just get five minutes at the end.

“Dad was very much supportive, reminded me why I played the sport. A lot of the time it was just me standing my ground. At the end of the day I loved football that much no one was going to stop me playing.

“No matter what your comments were

or how far you wanted to push me, if you didn’t want to pass me the ball I’d make sure to go and get it.”

Whitmore didn’t make it to the professional game as a player, but coaching and management was always the ambition.

“It was always a case that if I wasn’t going to continue as a player I was always going to get into coaching and try and work my way up,” she said.

“I was lucky that I had a great role model growing up in Sam Fisher. I’m still in contact with her now, she coached me from when I was six. She still watches my journey now.

“When I got the Millwall job she was the very first person I rang and she rings me throughout the season.

[The women’s game] has grown massively. There is still work to be done, but when I look back the opportunities the girls have now in comparison to what I did [are more].

“As long as they know they have those opportunities they should grab it.”

Former Lion passes away

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MICK BROWN, the former Millwall inside-forward, has died at the age of 76.

Brown began his career at Fulham before Billy Gray signed him for Millwall in February 1965.

After making his debut in a 1-1 draw against Crewe the following March, the next season Brown scored crucial goals in 1-0 wins over Swindon and Brentford as the Lions reached the Second Division, their second consecutive promotion.

Brown featured less often in the second tier and his last match was a 1-1 draw against Cardiff City.

He joined Luton in the summer of

1967 and then Colchester in October 1968 before he dropped into non-league football.

The Lions said: “The thoughts of everyone at Millwall are with the family and friends of Mick at this sad time.”

By Jake Sanders at The Den sport@southwarknews.co.uk IT HAS been a Championship season like no other, but Millwall’s form in comparison to their league position really does make for strange reading.

While this defeat was just the Lions’ second in twelve league matches, which is testament to their improvements since losing 3-1 at Nottingham Forest in January, it took their number of victories to just six in their previous 27 games since beating Preston on October 28.

One win every four-and-a-half matches is relegation form, but somehow Millwall find themselves sitting in the top half, and fourteen points clear of the bottom four with their brief flirt with danger quickly over following their recent revival.

It’s obvious where their problems lie Millwall don’t create enough, score enough goals or win enough football matches.

That was all too evident against a Blackburn side that haven’t been doing enough of those three things themselves in recent weeks, which is exactly why they’ve slipped below Millwall in the table despite being top-six hopefuls just last month.

And it was quite fitting that this game was played in an empty stadium, because if you were producing a Lions highlights reel from that first half, you would have been short of content.

If there had been supporters inside The Den, they would have been quickly forgiven

for heading for their half-time drink slightly earlier than usual.

The condition of the pitch certainly didn’t help the quality of the game, but the Lions did nothing to warrant even a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes, let alone trouble the scoreboard.

Blackburn didn’t exactly pepper Bart Bialkowski’s goal, which perhaps wasn’t a surprise considering the absence of their top scorer Adam Armstrong. But the blistering pace of Tyrhys Dolan and the quality of Bradley Dack were two serious weapons that would eventually prove decisive for the visiting side.

It didn’t come as a great surprise when Dack - who has now scored in four of his seven appearances against Millwall - gave Blackburn an eighteenth-minute advantage.

You have to be pretty special to beat Bialkowski, let alone from long range, but it was more luck than accuracy from Dack, who was allowed to twist, turn and get his shot away, Gary Rowett’s team paying the full price for giving a player of his ability that much time and space on the edge of the box.

Having said that, Millwall could hardly have expected the former Gillingham man’s effort to take a wicked deflection off Shaun Hutchinson that left Bialkowski wrongfooted.

However, given that three of the Lions’ previous four victories had come after conceding the opening goal, there was no

reason to panic.

But producing enough quality in the final third has been a big concern for the goalshy Lions.

This was their eleventh Championship game without scoring this season - seven of which have been at The Den. Matt Smith’s header that went wide from point-blank range moments after his introduction was Millwall’s only chance while the score was 1-0.

Twenty minutes after that, the game was over as a contest. And so were the Lions’ faint top-six hopes.

Three wins on the bounce last month had given Millwall hope of climbing above some of the sides ahead of them trying to clamber into that top six. But draws against Wycombe and Luton and then defeat to Barnsley had all but ended their chances this was surely the proverbial final nail for those play-off hopes.

The Tykes’ seventh success in a row leaves the south Londoners eleven points adrift ahead of Saturday’s trip to Derby, and while Millwall are renowned for coming on strong in the second half of the season, even this is surely beyond them.

Although Blackburn’s second goal also had a touch of good fortune about it, Tony Mowbray’s men more than deserved their three points.

Nineteen-year-old Dolan, who minutes earlier had only been denied an assist for Dack by a last-ditch tackle from Ryan Woods, was once more the architect.

Harvey Elliott capitalised on some sloppy play from both Hutchinson and Jake Cooper before sliding the ball to Dolan, whose shot deflected off Cooper and onto Sam Gallagher’s chest and over the line.

Millwall might well look back on two horrible moments of luck, but they hardly deserved much better.

And though Rowett was without five players that he could make a case for being in his best XI, that was no excuse in his eyes.

“I don’t like using excuses, but clearly it’s going to have a detrimental impact when you have less players to choose from when you have so many games in quick succession,” the Lions boss said.

None of those players are expected back until early April, but following a rare week off, which means time on the training ground, Millwall should be fresher at Pride Park in two days as they look to move one step closer to another top-half finish.

Midfielder enjoying hectic campaign after stalling at Stoke

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk YOU WON’T hear Ryan Woods complaining about the hectic schedule this season – because that’s exactly what he wanted at Millwall.

Woods had fallen out of favour at parent club Stoke before he joined the Lions on a loan deal in January 2020 and then for a season last summer.

Former Shrewsbury and Brentford midfielder Woods has already made 38 appearances this season, featuring in 33 out of Millwall’s 35 league games.

Millwall had hoped to be top-six challengers this campaign after finishing eighth last season, but that looks unlikely with an eleven-point gap to the play-offs.

But Woods has been pleased with his own form and his regular place in Gary Rowett’s side, as he targets a top-half finish.

“It’s been great. As I said last season one of the reasons I joined was to try to play as many games as possible,” Woods said.

“I’ve been really happy to play pretty much every game.

“I was talking to Jed [Wallace] and he was saying it’s the fourth season back in the Championship and to finish three out of those four seasons in the top ten would be a very good achievement for any team,

especially Millwall.

“There have been quite a few big players out injured who have been a miss for us. But they’ll have a couple more weeks, then the international break and hopefully we’ll get a few more back ready for the last eight games.

“Hopefully then we can push on and improve and see where that takes us.”

The quality of pitches has been an issue for players this season, with so many games in a shorter period of time. Millwall had hoped to replace the Den surface last summer but shelved those plans with such a short pre-season and because of the cost of the project combined with no gate income.

However, the Den turf didn’t stop Woods from flicking the ball over the head of former Lions midfielder Jayson Molumby before picking out Mason Bennett with a lovely ball over the top for the winner against Preston this month.

Have the former Millwall team-mates exchanged messages since then?

“No, we haven’t unfortunately. He’s been pretty quiet since that, to be honest,” Woods joked.

“It was pretty nice for me to be able to do that, especially on the surfaces and the pitches we’ve been playing on recently.

It’s been difficult.

“It’s not just at The Den, it’s all over. This season’s been tough for us as players but also for the pitches because they’ve also not had any rest. The groundsmen have

not been able to do any work on them.

“They’ve been really bad and it’s been hard to try to play, definitely the way I want to play. It’s difficult to try to read the ball, whether it’s going to bobble.

“You always have to take one or two more touches than you want to.”

After a poor run of form of just one win in fifteen league games, boss Rowett changed from two in midfield to three.

Woods felt that helped the side out.

He said: “It’s difficult because if you look at the majority of the teams in this division the football hasn’t been great, in my opinion, from anybody in particular.

The majority of the time when we’ve played a two we were a man short. A lot of teams opt for three in there nowadays.

“It just gave us more of an opportunity to be able to affect the game getting on second balls, you had the opportunity to be up against someone rather than gambling in space.”

Woods has been Mr Consistency this season. He has been one of the first names on the team sheet playing with a rotating cast of midfield partners: Ryan Leonard, Shaun Williams, Maikel Kieftenbeld, Ben Thompson and Billy Mitchell.

Woods has played alongside Mitchell in the last two games, just the latter’s second and third league starts in his senior career.

“He’s a good lad, Bill, he works really, really hard and he’s deserved his opportunity, especially with the injuries we’ve got,” Woods said.

“I thought he did really well in his first game. The second game was a little bit more difficult, but I think everyone this season has had that moment.

“But he works really hard and he’s only going to get better, especially with his attitude. “[Thompson] brought that energy that’s difficult to find at the moment in this period of games when you’re playing Tuesday-Saturday. It’s been non-stop.

“So for us to be able to have those sorts of players who are full of energy has been a great help.”

Millwall turned their form around this year to pull well clear of the relegation zone. Woods explained why he never feared the side would be drawn into a battle against the drop.

“If you probably asked one or two of the other lads you’d maybe have got a yes from them. But I never was,” he said.

“I know we went a few games without a win but I always knew we’d come out of it and look stronger on the other side.

“Then we went nine unbeaten and that’s what we’re capable of. If there’s one thing we are it’s very strong at the back. We’re difficult to beat.

“This season has been different to others with no fans and whatnot. We’re trying to finish as high as we can.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JED WALLACE has admitted the intense nature of the season has left him feeling fatigued and he was glad of a recent rest – particularly as the team won in his absence.

Wallace, 26, has played in 34 out of Millwall’s 35 league games this season. The only one he didn’t feature in was against Sheffield Wednesday last month when he was named on the bench and then wasn’t needed as the Lions won 4-1.

Since he joined the Lions permanently in the summer of 2017, Wallace has played 43 league games out of 46, then 42, and 43 Championship games last season.

Millwall have to pack their 46 Championship games this term into a campaign that is over a month shorter than usual due to the late start after the delayed 2019-20 season.

Wallace respected manager Gary Rowett’s decision to leave him out against the Owls.

“Sometimes you forget, I play nearly every week and it can be hard with the volume of games,” Wallace said.

“The pitches have been difficult

as well so sometimes you feel fatigued. Maybe centre-halves can get away with it a little bit more and goalkeepers, but for offensive players it’s difficult to play week-in, week-out.

“I can probably count on one hand the number of games I’ve missed for Millwall the last three or four years.

It’s something I’m proud of. I take care of my body.

“I have a good relationship with the manager where if he wants to take me out we’ve got freshness about us coming in. No one is more important than the team getting results.

“A major factor this year is competition for places and people have made big impacts off the bench. We need that.

“It’s all about the team so I was happy to be on the bench and watch us win. When you’re not in the team you’ve got to roll your sleeves up and work hard to try and get back in.

“I came on against Reading and did well. I scored in the next game against Birmingham. It’s good [to rest players], it keeps everyone on their toes.

“I just want to play the best I can but it has been difficult this season.

I don’t think anyone apart from Hutch [Shaun Hutchinson] or Coops

[Jake Cooper] or Bart [Bialkowski] is going to be able to play every minute of every game.”

Millwall appear to have little chance of reaching the play-offs this season, and they don’t need to worry about relegation.

But Wallace isn’t going to get complacent.

He said: “I know it sounds clichéd but we have to take it as it comes, the games are so frequent that one bad week can change your whole season. A good week can do the same as well.

“Every single game is difficult. At this level every team has three or four players that can really hurt you.

“If four or five of our players don’t play well we’re not going to win games. We need nine or ten, eleven, playing well to win because we don’t have the luxury of a lot of clubs that have 20, 25 players to pick from.

“We need at least nine of our team playing well to win games. If there are more than that off it then we won’t win.”

Derby, meanwhile, are in a relegation battle under Wayne Rooney. After some good form earlier this year the Rams have lost three of their last five games and are just six points above the bottom three.

Millwall plan for fans’ return – and owner receives vaccine

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk STEVE KAVANAGH is hopeful fans will be back at The Den at full capacity next season as the club plans for 2021-22 season tickets and memberships to go on sale “in a few weeks’ time”.

Monday (March 8) marked the first day of the government’s ‘roadmap’ out of the third lockdown, with students returning to classrooms and the easing of some social restrictions.

Supporters made a brief return this season for two games – at a capacity of 2,000 – the only times they have been at The Den since February 29, 2020.

Lions CEO Kavanagh also intends to put the club forward in a bid to host pilot events, which could happen before the end of this season.

“Since the Prime Minister revealed details of the government’s roadmap we have been able to really begin looking ahead to 2021-22 which

we hope will start with full stadia,” Kavanagh wrote in a letter to fans on Millwall’s website. “With this in mind we are finalising discussions around the club’s strategy for season tickets and memberships, and we anticipate going on sale with one if not both in just a few weeks’ time.

“Your support for the club throughout this entire pandemic has been nothing short of outstanding and believe me when I say that the management, players and all other staff are every bit as excited about seeing the stands full once again as you all will be about your return to The Den. “Before then, though, there is the prospect of pilot events in football and we would again be delighted to host one or more if selected towards the end of this campaign. We’re not yet sure what format such pilots would take, or whether EFL fixtures would be in contention as part of the government’s plans, but we certainly

hope so and will await further guidance from DCMS and other bodies.

“For us, revenue generated through iFollow subscriptions, match pass sales, the Lions Loyalty Club and other commercial initiatives has been incredibly important, and I thank everyone who has contributed to one or more of those streams.”

Kavanagh paid tribute to John Berylson, and also revealed Millwall’s owner has been vaccinated.

He said: “I also cannot articulate just how indebted we are to our chairman, John Berylson, for the way in which he continues to support the club year after year, but never more so than in the past 12 months. In my view we have the best chairman in English football for so many different reasons and hopefully he too can be back at matches sooner rather than later when restrictions are lifted, especially as he’s now fully vaccinated.”

Meanwhile, Kavanagh has called for tighter financial rules around clubs, including stopping the sale of grounds to raise cash.

“As a club we continue to be of the belief that far stricter and more comprehensive regulations need to be in place – and be properly enforced – in order to ensure that no club and set of fans falls foul of irresponsible ownership or management,” Kavanagh said.

“It remains to be seen what changes, if any, will be made to profit and sustainability regulations moving forward, although surely the selling of club stadia must be stopped. We all know competing in the Championship is difficult and financially challenging but the very future of clubs must not be put at risk and we certainly won’t allow the existence of Millwall to be gambled away in this manner.”

Kavanagh hit out at the lack of financial support for more than a year as EFL clubs continue to be deprived

of their main revenue source, gate income.

“A lot has been made publicly about the Premier League bailout for the EFL, which has served to add to existing frustrations and difficulties around finances during the pandemic. The truth is that in the Championship this was a loan to pay back HMRC debts that clubs had built up.

“We were then informed that the loan was being sourced from the government, which is ironic in itself, and that the Premier League’s involvement was to pay the interest.

“All that being said, the government effectively blocked the loan by trying to enforce undeliverable conditions anyway so the lack of financial support, which has lasted a year, continues, and we remain solely reliant on our chairman and other revenue streams which are wholly incomparable to what they are during normal times.”

The Lions are currently eleven points off sixth and fourteen above the bottom three and on that trajectory could have little to play for in the final few games.

Rowett gave senior debuts to Hayden Muller and Tyler Burey against Huddersfield on the final day of last season with the Lions’ play-off hopes over.

Rowett picked out left-back Junior Tiensia as potentially the only debutant this term.

And the Lions boss is not giving up hope yet of reaching the top six, pointing out Millwall are only four points off where they were after the same number of games last season.

“The ones that are ready and we feel are ready are in and around the squad at the moment,” Rowett said. “I don’t think there’s anyone that’s been held back and not had the opportunity.

“I think there might be a chance for someone like Junior if he continues to impress in training. It might be there is an opportunity for a start for Tyler Burey, and more opportunities for the likes of Billy Mitchell and Danny McNamara.

“What I don’t think you can do with three or four games to go regardless is end up with seven or eight young players in the team. If they’re not at that level now they’re not going to get an opportunity at the end of the season.

“I’m not saying they aren’t but that’s my thinking at the moment.

“When you’ve worked so hard for such a long period of time you want to win every game. We want the players to have that winning mentality and it’s very hard to

then go, ‘okay, the last three games don’t really matter and we’ll just play some young players’.

“We’re always looking to win the match, we’re always looking to be competitive and finish the season strongly.

“At this moment in time nothing is dead at all so we’ll keep working hard and if we get to that point then we’ll look to see what the sensible thing to do is.

“But until you get to three or four games to go that doesn’t even enter into your head. It’s just, let’s get as many points as we can and see where we are.

“We’re four points off where we were last season as we stand at the moment, so we’re not a million miles. Just a good run of form and who knows?”

Woods, 27, will have been on loan at Millwall for a season-and-a-half at the end of this campaign and the Lions would like a permanent deal for the midfielder.

But Woods’ wages at his parent club and the likely transfer fee to take him permanently from Stoke make it difficult for Millwall.

The News asked Woods if Stoke had been in touch with just over a year left on his current deal.

“No, simple as that,” Woods said.

“I’ve got a year left after the end of this season so I’m sure one way or another we’d like to sort something more permanently, wherever that may be I don’t know. I’m leaving that to my agent to sort out.

“I’m going to try and go on a holiday.

I’ll look forward to the break that we haven’t had for a while now and I’ll let things take care of themselves.

“Hopefully I’ll know my future very soon.

“It was always about me coming here and playing as many games as possible.

“I think the gaffer has already said it’s probably a difficult transfer to do in terms of numbers and whatnot.

“We’ll see what happens, I’m sure where there’s a will there’s a way.

“I leave things like that to my agent and I try to take care of the football.

“I’ll try and go on holiday, rest and recover, and hopefully have my future sorted out sooner rather than later.”
