What does the council want to do for private renters?

Southwark Council has announced a new consultation into to expanding its landlord licensing scheme.

“Landlords are encouraged to take part and find out how we are working to support good landlords. All residents and business owners are encouraged to take part and provide feedback on our proposals – all views are important and can make a real difference to how we work to transform private renting in Southwark”.

Since 2016 the council has set up two licensing programmes. One focused on ‘small houses in multiple occupation’ across the whole borough, while action on single family homes was targeted to key trunk roads and high streets.

Since then, 35 private landlords have been prosecuted, more than £55,000 was confiscated under the Proceeds of Crime Act, 451 informal notices served over housing hazards, 313 formal notices served, and 200 privately rented homes now have a valid gas safety certificate. www.southwark.gov.uk/ propertylicensing2021

A third of people are now private renters in Southwark, many of whom are trapped in expensive but bad quality housing.

Council leader Kieron Williams said: “We want to ensure everyone who is renting privately in Southwark has a decent home, with good standards of security, safety and quality.

“Having invested significantly in landlord licensing over the past few years we are now looking to take this further with proposals for new property licensing schemes covering over 90 per cent of the borough’s private rented homes.

over 90% get into preferred secondary school, says council

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk More than ninety per cent of families have received school places at one of their preferred choices, says Southwark Council.

This year there were 39 fewer applications to secondaries overall and 216 not allocated a preferred place - a rise of nineteen compared with last year.

But overall the borough is in keeping with the London-wide average, with the majority gaining first choice offers - 64.8

per cent.

Councillor Jasmine Ali, cabinet member for children, young people and education, said: “Our young people have had an incredibly tough twelve months as Covid-19 has taken a huge toll on education. These figures show promise of a great new future ahead for Southwark’s children as they move up to secondary school, I am pleased that the majority of them will be going to their preferred school and I sincerely wish them every success in the next steps in their lives.

We will support all families through the change of school process.”

Fundraiser set up to illuminate Rotherhithe’s blue coats

news@southwarknews.co.uk A fundraiser has been launched to illuminate the two blue coat figures on the Old Schoolhouse in Rotherhithe.

The What’s On In Rotherhithe Group (WORG) are hoping to raise £4,617 to provide a ‘subtle and aesthetic daily illumination of two historic figurines every evening after dark.’

The two limestone figures date back to the 1700's and sit prominently above the first-floor window of the Old Schoolhouse, opposite St Mary's Church in Rotherhithe.

Their uniforms are blue because it was the cheapest dye available at that time.

What's the history of the school?

The ‘Free School’, as it was first known, was founded by Peter Hills and Robert Bell in 1613.

Hills was a master mariner, proven by his position as Elder Brother of Trinity House, an organisation founded by Henry VIII to run coastguard services and provide lighthouses and buoys and assist sailors. Less is known of Bell, (Photo by Gage Skidmore)

The figurines were illuminated in September 2019 as part of the annual Illuminate Rotherhithe Festival, where they were much admired by visitors.

“Illuminating the 2 figures will complement the illumination of St Mary's Church spire and the Christopher Jones memorial forming a harmonious group” the WORG explained.

“This will help foster enjoyment and wellbeing for local residents and visitors on their evening stroll through the area and make the area feel safer and more sociable.

“It will also expand the opportunity for the very popular walking tours to operate into the evening.”

Under the "influence and advice" of the good Reverend Gataker these two men took it upon themselves to establish a school in a humble appendage to St Mary’s church to educate eight sons of seafarers from the parish.

Hills left a sum of £3 a year in his will to pay a school master and another £3 a year for the churchwardens for the poor.

The Star Wars actor won the award for best supporting actor in a series, miniseries or television film for his role in Steve McQueen’s acclaimed Small Axe anthology series.

In ‘Red, White and Blue’, Boyega plays Leroy Logan who joins the Metropolitan Police with hopes of changing its racist attitudes from within after seeing his father assaulted by two police officers.

During his acceptance speech, Boyega admitted that he wasn’t expecting to win, saying: “I’m so shocked.

“I thought it was gonna be one of them nights where… you go to your bed and just chill,”

he joked, before lifting up his leg to show his trousers.

“I’ve got Balenciagas, guys. I’ve got tracking bottoms on my bottoms that I’m comfortable [in], but this is exciting.”

The actor continued by thanking director Steve McQueen and highlighting the importance of the real police officer he portrayed.

He said: “He [Leroy Logan] has done so much work where I grew up in south London.

“I am very much a product of some of his hard work in the community. Meeting him had a big impact.”

On the road out of lockdown London has highest unemployment rate in the UK

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk More than half Peabody's residents in London have now lost their job, been furloughed or are working fewer hours according to new data published this week on the financial impact of the pandemic.

The capital has the highest unemployment and furlough rate in the UK, with the biggest decline in satisfaction in any region according to research from the housing association and the Social Market Foundation think tank.

Its new report, based on an analysis of Office for National Statistics figures and surveys of Peabody residents, shows that Londoners are disproportionately affected by the lockdown, with the impact of furlough and low pay prompting fears of growing hardship among poorer residents.

London has the highest unemployment rate in the UK, with double the number of unemployed people than any other region. There are also more people furloughed in London than in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland combined.

Unemployment in Southwark is currently running at 8.7 per cent.

Nowhere in England has experienced a larger decline in life satisfaction than London (by 9.3 per cent), increasing to 17.4 per cent among people on lower incomes.

More than 2,000 Peabody residents were surveyed for the research to find out how the pandemic had affected their finances and wellbeing. Over half (54 per cent) had lost their job, been furloughed or were working fewer hours. In October 2020 this figure was at 38 per cent.

More people are now earning less than the London Living Wage - 38 per cent compared to less than a quarter in August.

Only fifteen per cent of residents who had lost a job during the pandemic had now found new employment, while one in five had taken out loans or used credit cards to buy essentials.

Most distressingly, one in four Peabody residents described themselves as being in a ‘desperate financial situation’.

The housing association said it was clear that the government should focus its new budget on strengthening the safety net for the most vulnerable.

It called on the five-week wait for Universal Credit to be reduced and the £20 uplift to become permanent, and said it was vital furlough was extended until all sectors had reopened. It is also pushing for new funding to help people develop new skills, retrain and access mental health support.

Peabody’s chief executive Brendan Sarsfield said: “The survey of Peabody residents shows that people on low incomes across the capital are really struggling as the lockdown continues.

“London already had the highest rates of poverty in the UK and the new jobs crisis caused by COVID is making this worse.

“We’re doing what we can through our resident wellbeing programme, but London needs more support from central government to make sure the poor are not left behind as a result of the public health disaster over the last year.

“We hope that the budget will provide financial backing to support struggling Londoners through the ongoing emergency, and lay the foundations for a strong, comprehensive recovery for everybody.”

Apart from furloughing staff, Orbit Beers has had very little financial help to get through the restrictions. They have been paying all of their rent and rates in full, and then in September 2020 a planned three-yearly review doubled the rent for their newer arch.

Robert now plans to open a brewery bar in one new arch in May, and if that goes well, a new brewery later in the year, doubling their capacity and footprint.

“I think this year is still going to be pretty tough,” Robert said. “I don’t think we will get back to normality until next year.

“While it’s great to have a forwardlooking ethos, you still have to have money coming into the bank.

“We did everything we could to stay afloat and we are still here, still with our whole team intact.

“Orbit means too much to us to let it fail and I won’t ever let that happen.”

brewery to expand despite a 90% drop in revenue

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk When his revenue dropped by 90% overnight on 23rd March 2020, Robert Middleton also dropped his plans to expand his London brewery, Orbit Beers, instead focusing on online sales to survive the crisis.

Now he has decided to throw everything into carrying on his dream and growing the Walworth-based business.

“At the end of last year, I said that we could dig a trench and hide until this is all over, or we can start building again,” he explained.

“The world will come back to life and we want to be ready. I would rather give it and go and fail than wait.

“What’s the point of surviving the downturn if we end up missing the upturn? That to me would be illogical and an even bigger business risk. Things will get better and we are going for it.’

‘takeaway only’ for historic bermondsey pub over outdoor space

news@southwarknews.co.uk The Angel pub in Bermondsey will re-open for takeaway only from 15th April.

This is due to ordering in new stock and a lack of appropriate outdoor space for social distancing.

The pub sits in front of the remains of Edward III's mansion; the English king who famously started the Hundred Years War. Today, The Angel is a Samuel Smith's

pub located at the end of Bermondsey Wall East on the Thames Path.

A member of staff described its lockdown closure as 'awful' particularly as all 12 staff were put on furlough, many of whom were students.

The Angel look forward to welcoming regulars and new customers back inside at the end of spring.

Pubs and bars can reopen for indoor food and drink from 17th May, at the earliest.

The bar has a garden area and extended pavement space for customers to be able to enjoy a drink outside.

Their message from their reopening in July 2020 of "Respect each other; Don't take the p**s; and then we can have a good time" remains the same for this time round.

"It's been a struggle I'm not going to lie," said one of the managers but praised the council for being "very good and providing grants automatically."

This was a very different experience to an East Dulwich hairdresser who had to wait seven weeks for a response, as reported in last week's News.

As a small cohort of three, the team will be closely looking at the coronavirus numbers and will be 'relieved if we get to that stage [of a full reopening]'

Based off Winchester Walk, the Rake is known for its 'impressively large' beer selection while having a 'famously small' seating area.

Being inside Borough Market, punters will be able to have a drink of craft beer on the bar's patch of decking The outdoor heaters and covered area will keep

their customers dry during the April showers.

Manager George is yet to make up his mind about the Prime Minister's roadmap, saying: "The plan sounds reasonable but I'm waiting for the fine print."

While customers are more than welcome to share a drink, it is important to adhere by the regulations.

"We were flooded with groups of people from London and further out when we reopened in July," he explained.

"Reopening in April therefore seems a little daunting."

Camra’s south east london pub of the year is ready to re-open outdoors

Landlord Seamus O'Neill celebrated winning the 2020 CAMRA South East London Pub of the Year award but behind the scenes, things were tough.

He decided not to reopen in December out of fear

that the UK would go into another lockdown.

Speaking to the News, he said: "I think that people and the media misunderstood what the furlough scheme actually meant.

"The Government said they were supporting businesses but the scheme actually supports our staff.

"As a business, we have to pay National Insurance contributions and pension costs. Putting sixteen of my team on furlough meant that our monthly bill was around £2,500."

The Dog and Bell are more than set up for reopening outdoors only in April, having invested in new equipment back in October.

The pub purchased large red umbrellas, multiple heaters and outdoor lighting for their outdoor stretch on Prince Street.

Seamus is quietly optimistic about the future, saying: “Things are tough but we will soldier on, return and provide the best situation for what we can.”

It will be opening up its cobbled front and decked jetty for customers from 12th April.

The outdoor space boasts a perfect

accompaniment to a pint; a beautiful view of the River Thames.

The pub was awarded a Blue Plaque courtsey of the News and Southwark Heritage for its historical importance related to the sailing of the Mayflower.

In 1620 the Mayflower, commanded by Captain Christopher Jones, sailed from Rotherhithe on the first stage of its epic voyage to America.

After providing takeaways during the lockdown, a member of staff told the News that they were all 'very excited' to have people back.

In a statement on its website, the pub said: "Thankfully we are delighted to say that as of the 12th April we will be taking bookings for our outdoor decking area and will also have limited walk in space at the front of the pub.

"We will also be starting reservations shortly for bookings inside the Mayflower as of May 17th.

"We miss you all and look forward to welcoming you back, safe and sound.”

Mayor announces £5m tourism fund for london

By Simon Throssell news@southwarknews.co.uk The Mayor of London has announced plans to launch a £5 million post-COVID tourism campaign to support the capital’s safe reopening.

The campaign will focus on bringing domestic tourists back to London to help aid the recovery of the hospitality, retail and cultural sectors.

A recent report found that tourist spending in central London had fallen by nearly £11bn in the last year.

The new recovery proposals could include ‘major events that showcase central London’s public spaces and cultural riches.’

Sadiq Khan said: “I am determined to do everything I can to help our great city recover as quickly as possible from this appalling pandemic.

“Crucial to that will be the safe reopening of central London and attracting Londoners and domestic visitors back to our amazing

style.

Customers will be able to enjoy its warren of rooms once pubs can reopen for indoor dining in May. A staff member told the News: "Being put on furlough was a difficult experience to go through but it will be great to get back to work.

"I'm looking forward to getting out of the house and really hope for the best."

They added: "We had a sign outside the pub saying, 'See you all soon, it's not the end' and that is definitely true!"

“Tourism is at the beating heart of our capital, and it is vital that this can thrive to ensure the speedy recovery and future prosperity of London.

He added: “Our team can’t wait to welcome visitors from both London and across the UK back inside London’s most famous river crossing when we are able to reopen our doors in May.”

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Fears are growing for elderly and housebound people yet to receive their first COVID-19 jab, who have been given no idea when they will be vaccinated.

The local health authority told this paper on deadline that people would be contacted in the next fortnight.

Despite government proclamations that the first four priority groups had been offered vaccinations, and Boris Johnson’s announcement that the rollout would soon start focusing on the over 40s, a significant minority of the most vulnerable people in our borough are yet to receive their first dose.

The numbers are worrying. Although 48,000 people in Southwark have now received a first jab according to a briefing seen by the News, coverage among the oldest residents outside care homes is lagging behind.

Whereas around 90 per cent of elderly care home residents have now had jabs, this figure declines to around seven in ten residents overall who are categorised as top priority age groups.

Takeup among over 80s is higher, with over 85 per cent having had a first dose.

There are various reasons why a jab may have been cancelled or delayed, including general sickness or returning positive COVID-19 test.

However, the News has been contacted by several concerned family members who say their elderly relatives are unvaccinated due to being housebound and therefore unable to travel to a vaccination centre, and are unable to book directly online.

One woman contacted us after an 84-year-old relative in Camberwell, who should have been vaccinated before February 15, was told by Jessa Towell Health Centre that home vaccinations have been delayed due to a shortage and there was ‘no update’ on when the situation would change.

His great-niece said: “I’m concerned that this is happening across the area and UK, and housebound people are being forgotten due to the additional logistics of getting a vaccine to them.

“People like my great-uncle are in a very vulnerable category and are having to rely on people coming into their house to deliver care - putting them at more risk.

“That’s also even more of a worry if lockdown restrictions start to be lifted in the coming weeks as reported before they’ve received their vaccine.”

She added: “I’m also concerned that the news coverage last week from the government suggests they have ‘successfully vaccinated’ everyone in the top priority groups by their February target 15 - when they haven’t.”

Several other families have contacted this paper with similar stories over the last few weeks, some of whom have gone on to receive jabs after a delay. Others are still waiting.

Repeated enquiries to South East London Clinical Commissioning Group throughout the last month, asking how many top priority residents remained unvaccinated, why housebound residents were reporting delays, and what was being done to close this gap, went unanswered until shortly before going to press.

On Wednesday morning, a spokesperson for the CCG told the News housebound residents could expect their jabs within the next fortnight: “Everyone in a priority cohort living in south Southwark has been invited to be vaccinated, with pre-booked appointments available across the area.

“Housebound patients are also being offered the vaccine at home and we expect to have contacted and offered the vaccine to all housebound patients within the next two weeks.”

Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman said she has received several emails from friends and family members of elderly housebound constituents who remain unvaccinated, and had been lobbying the clinical commissioning group

to ensure the patients are contacted as soon as possible.

“I am continuing to monitor the vaccine situation in Camberwell and Peckham closely with regular meetings with the South East London Clinical Commissioning Group,” she said in COVID-19 briefing.

She has also written to health secretary Matt Hancock along with 22 other London MPS calling for an updated strategy for housebound vaccinations to be published to ensure no one is left behind.

While there has been huge focus on vaccine hesitancy and uptake among younger groups and health and social care professionals, there appears to be little information about the logistical challenges of vaccinating the most vulnerable groups.

It is unclear whether vaccine supply or staff shortages are playing a role. Earlier this year London Mayor Sadiq Khan claimed the capital had not received its fare share of doses as officials had failed to take into account the much higher number of registered patients surgeries have, on average, in the city compared with more rural areas.

Two weeks ago Matt Hancock admitted a third of all social care staff in the county were, so far, unvaccinated.

This week, further figures emerged showing around a quarter of NHS staff in London have also failed to receive jabs - with the city reporting the worst NHS vaccine uptake nationally.

Meanwhile, the vaccine rollout has continued apace with the over-40s on track to be invited for jabs later in March, with the government aiming to vaccinate all adults by July in the hope lockdown can finally end.

Raid on house party on Walworth estate sees officers attacked and man charged with robbery Eight police injured with one of them knocked unconscious

Police were responding to a reported robbery in Portland Street in the early hours of Sunday morning, where a victim was assaulted and had his phone stolen by two males, when they were told the suspects had been seen heading toward a property in Hopwood Road.

At around 5.30am, as officers entered, they found a house party was in full

swing with thirty guests. As police tried to identify the suspects and close the event down, the group became hostile and began throwing with drinks and other items at the officers.

Eight officers were injured with one knocked unconscious and another sustaining a suspected hand fracture.

Police had to withdraw for their own safety with backup called in for support.

In total, 30 people were reported for fines of £800 as the party was finally closed down.

A seventeen-year-old male was identified by the robbery victim as he left the address as the person who took his mobile phone. He was arrested on suspicion of robbery.

When officers searched a nineteenyear-old man, officers found the victim’s stolen phone and he was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods.

A nineteen-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and assaulting a police officer.

A seventeen-year-old female was

arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and handling stolen goods after she was searched and found to be carrying a number of different debit cards and an oyster card within her belongings, all with different names on them.

All four suspects were taken into custody at a south London police station. They were later bailed to return on date in late March.

Chief Inspector Richard Blears, from the Central South Command Unit, which covers Southwark, said: “Restrictions are still in place to protect lives; every person who attended this illegal gathering has acted selfishly and irresponsibly and has potentially put others at risk.

“Not only that, but some have even gone as far as physically harming the officers who attended the scene, which is totally unacceptable.

"We will continue to enforce breaches of COVID-19 restrictions when they are alerted to us.”

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Elmington Estate leaseholders say they are being forced to pay a ‘COVID-19 tax’ on major works after being charged for PPE, an on-site marshall to ensure social distancing, and extra hand washing facilities expected to cost more than £100,000.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said he and his partner first received notice of the extent and cost of major works required to the estate in 2019. But it was not until September 2020 that they were told homeowners could expect a flat fee of £1,000 on top of their pre-existing bill - in their case approximately £5,000 - just to cover incurred ‘COVID-19 costs’.

These include 150ml bottles of hand sanitiser for £5.50 apiece, paper coveralls for £6.50 each, and face visors costing a princely £9.95.

COVID-19 marshalls and cleaners are expected to cost £4,195 per week, with new temporary sinks and PPE storage racking up £2,760 and £400 respectively.

Staggeringly, the total COVID-19 costs of the estate-wide improvements could run to more than a £115,000 despite largely being external.

Trying to get to the bottom of exactly what costs are being added into the budget by contractors Engie has since become a bureaucratic nightmare, with the homeowner telling the News it ‘‘blows my mind’ how confusing communication has become with Southwark Council.

He told us: “There are meant to be two parts to the work, internal and

external, and the internal works have been delayed.

“It’s insane really. There is something contemptuous about it”.

He continued: “It is hard to look at major works and judge whether it is value for money on the page, but with COVID-19 costs it is easy.

“With PPE, they are already required to wear protective gear like dust makes. Are we expected to pay for their boots and gloves too?

“Why is this now a new category of cost? We were told most of the workers - working outside - were arranged in bubbles already, so why are there extra barriers being put in to distance them and even a ‘COVID marshall’?

“The barriers alone are over £700 and everyone knows the deal by now.

Do they really need a marshall telling them what to do?”

Leaseholders on the estate have began the lengthy process of disputing the extra costs, saying they should be absorbed by contractors like any other business would, arguing that shops, restaurants and bars do not charge customers extra to cover PPE, screens or other equipment, so why should a profit-making contractor charge a local authority?

The News put this question to Engie, but at the time of going to press had received no response. Southwark Council has maintained that extra costs incurred due to the pandemic are leaseholders’ responsibility - and not part and parcel of running any business.

member for council housing, responded: “I really do sympathise with homeowners when they receive large estimates and bills and we offer them a wide range of support.

“As well as the actual works, there are a number of other costs we have to include in our contracts, which leaseholders are also responsible for contributing to the payment of.

“In this instance, we also had to split the contract, which we wrote to residents about in September last year, the cost of that step was communicated and agreed with homeowners.

“As well as this, we have had to include extra measures as we work safely around COVID-19, including security, PPE and cleaning contracts.

“We have invited residents to speak to us at any time so we can explain this further, and we continue to have an open dialogue with them to talk about what any of the costs mean.”

The News has highlighted Lily’s plight and at the time of going to press £164,568 of the £370,000 has been brought in.

Lily was found to have diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) – said to be the most deadly form of child cancer – after her parents took her to hospital shortly after Christmas as she was vomiting.

DIPG is rare. It affects only up to 30 British children a year, but with a life expectancy of six to nine months, time is running out for little Lily.

Her auntie Lucy O’Sullivan, from Camberwell is still desperately seeking more ways to get her niece the cash for treatment in the States.

The 43-year-old, who works at Albion Primary School in Rotherhithe has set up numerous fundraising events and online ways to generate money with the help of her family, local people and friends from the school.

Lily’s mum Elizabeth, 31, said the full amount of money needed to be reached

by April. She said: “The treatments we are looking at need to be carried out between twelve and fourteen weeks after radiotherapy.”

Lily, who lives in Colchester, finished her thirteen radiotherapy sessions at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, in Cambridge, last month. The sessions could potentially shrink Lily’s tumour.

Elizabeth said: “Lily needs to have an MRI scan on March 15, which will show if the radiotherapy has started to take effect and if there is any swelling on the brain after the radiotherapy. We’re hoping there won’t be any swelling so that we can proceed with the right treatment for Lily. But we are running out of time.

“If too much time has passed following her radiotherapy, doctors may not be able to take Lily on.”

Doctor’s in Cambridge have advised Lily’s parents the cost of Lily’s treatment in the US – including travel – would be about £370,000. The couple have been in contact with a specialist doctor from New York who can provide pioneering treatment for DIPG. Elizabeth said: “Right now we are looking into a lot of treatments and they are all about the same cost, it just about finding the right one for Lily.”

While the family waits for the MRI scan, they have decided to start decorating Lily’s baby brother’s nursery.

An award-winning BBC producer was jailed for 21 months for supplying drugs at 'chemsex parties', writes Katherine Johnston...

Alexander Parkin, aged, 45, from Kennington, was sentenced at Kingston Crown Court on Monday, March 1.

The producer, who had worked on the BBC 3 radio show Late Junction, pleaded guilty in October last year to possession with intent to supply and offer to supply crystal meth.

Officers had found 121 grams of the drug after a search of his home in August 2020. He was taken into custody and charged the next day.

Mobile phone data revealed that Parkin had been engaged in the supply of drugs for some time.

Detective Inspector Louise Houtmeyers, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “Parkin was clearly holding parties and selling chemsex drugs.

“We remain committed to preventing the sale and use of illegal drugs and will continue to target those who make money from the misery of others."

Thirty-nine-year-old Natasha Griffin hopes her story will inspire other women to get help and speak openly about the debilitating illness.

Endometriosis is where cells similar to those in the lining of the womb grow in other areas of the body such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder and bowel. Each month the tissue breaks down and bleeds but has nowhere to escape; causing inflammation, pain and scar tissue.

The condition ranges in severity, with some women having few or no symptoms, and others experiencing agonising pain each month.

It is believed to affect one in ten women of reproductive age but due to the nature of its symptoms; historic lack of awareness among healthcare professionals and patients; and difficulty diagnosing without an invasive procedure; the crippling symptoms have often been dismissed as simply ‘bad periods’.

Currently, the only way to confirm

menstruating.

"I couldn't maintain the pill because it plagued me in other ways,” she said.

“My weight ballooned, I had constant headaches and I regularly complained to my GP who referred me for a laparoscopy.

"Before the surgery, I was warned that there was a possibility of coming out with rips and scars. I was told that my fallopian tubes would be checked too. I almost fainted when they told me that there was a chance of me waking up with my tubes removed. I blacked out."

There are limited treatments for the condition, ranging from taking painkillers and hormonal contraceptives, to having some of the endometrial tissue removed from parts of the body, to full hysterectomies in the most severe cases.

Endometriosis can also affect infertility.

For women who do conceive, symptoms can ease during pregnancy but can return after birth, sometimes even worse than before. This was the case for Natasha, who described her menstrual cycles as ‘worse than ever’ after having her baby.

“It was so tough trying to balance motherhood, chronic pain and heavier bleeding,” she explained.

“I was referred for a second laparoscopy, which confirmed endometriosis had grown back.

“I tried to press for a third surgery but

it was refused. The doctor I spoke to was incredibly blunt.

“He told me that my options all led back to induced medical menopause. I explained that I was still young – I was 36 at the time – and he responded, raising his voice, 'Well, you make your mind up and tell me what it is exactly you want.’

“This left me in a state of mental trauma because of the way the doctor dismissed my pain in such a shocking manner."

Her experience trying to navigate treatment for her condition led her to set up Embracing Moi, a not-for-profit, aimed at supporting and advocating for people with chronic illness and disabilities.

On average it takes over seven years for a sufferer with endometriosis to be correctly diagnosed.

An inquiry by MPs last year found that 58 per cent of 10,000 women with the condition surveyed had visited their GP ten times or more due to their symptoms before being diagnosed. Forty-eight per cent had been to A&E. Under 20 per cent had visited a specialist centre for treatment and support - highlighting what the charity Endometriosis UK says is a ‘postcode lottery’ in care.

Chargers will add up to 100 miles of ‘fuel’ in approximately ten minutes

Alongside the existing petrol pumps, the site now has seven electric bays installed with ultra-rapid 150kW chargers.

Chargers can add 100 miles of range in approximately ten minutes, subject to the car make and battery.

Newington forecourt is the very

first ‘electrified’ site run by MFG, the UK’s leading independent forecourt operator.

The site is part of their strategy to encourage electric vehicle adoption and driver confidence in electricity as a fuel source.

William Bannister, CEO of MFG said: “We are delighted to be opening our first EV Power site at MFG Newington.

The location is excellent and combined with our existing fossil fuel and retail offering we believe will be a huge benefit to the local community.”

The move, announced on Monday, will reassure those who feared the extension could be sacrificed in favour of the government’s ‘levelling up’ agenda in the north of England.

South east London teenager charged with terrorism offences

Eighteen-year-old Connor Burke, (b.08.07.2002) was arrested on Wednesday, February 24.

He was charged on Monday, March 1 with dissemination of terrorist publications, contrary to Section 2 of the Terrorism Act 2006 and four counts of possession of information likely to be useful to a terrorist, contrary to Section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

He appeared in custody at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

life sentence given to rapist who attacked teenage peckham waitress

Taofiq Laguda, from Dagenham, must serve a minimum of seven years before he can be considered for parole.

The 46-year-old approached his eighteen-year-old victim at around 1.30am on January 24 last year after seeing her walking alone while on her way home from work. The restaurant worker had been planning to take the bus but, after waiting for some time, decided to walk.

Laguna pulled up in his car and asked her for directions, before offering the woman a lift home.

The court heard that once she got into the vehicle and he headed toward Deptford his demeanour changed and drove her to an estate in Greenwich, locked the door, threatened to kill her and raped her. After the attack he left her on the side of the road, as he drove away with her handbag still in the car.

The victim managed to flag down a passerby for help and police launched an investigation. Laguda was caught

LSBU praised for new support services for male victims of sexual violence

The university, known as LSBU, is the first to meet the guidelines set out by organisations the LimeCulture and Male Survivors Partnership.

It set up its specialist service after a report by Universities UK, published in 2016, highlighted the extent of sexual violence in campuses across the UK. LSBU now has an in-house sexual violence liaison support team which offers advice about reporting sexual violence, academic support, and liaison with other services both inside and outside the university including counselling. It is just one of thirty organisations, and the only from the higher education sector, to meet the national standards for helping male victims.

Shockingly, Laguda was on licence at the time of the attack after being convicted for raping a woman in Whitechapel in 2006. One of his conditions was being unable to drive.

Flouting the order, he had taken his wife’s car while she was out of the country and drove around looking for a vulnerable, lone woman to target, the jury heard.

Laguda pleaded not guilty and tried to claim he had had consensual sex with the victim, but the jury’s verdict was unanimous. He was convicted him of rape and theft at Woolwich Crown Court on Wednesday, January 27 and sentenced at the same court last week.

Detective Constable Daniel Weeks, said: “This horrific attack strikes at the heart of our society. The victim has shown tremendous resilience throughout this ordeal, the police investigation and subsequent trial.

“My thanks goes to all the officers and partner agencies who relentlessly worked on this case to ensure justice."

Officers have now confirmed his condition is ‘not life-threatening’.

Jailed for £32m cocaine ring

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A man from New Cross was behind a £32 million cocaine smuggling operation where drugs were hidden inside a yam shipment from Costa Rica.

According to Metropolitan Police data, there have been, on average, two sexual offences recorded every day in Southwark over the last two years.

An estimated 500,000 incidents of sexual abuse or harassment are believed to take place every year in universities in England and Wales.

National Union of Students research in 2018 found that two in five students experienced sexual misconduct, of which one in eight involved staff members.

It is believed sexual violence against men is particularly under-reported and, as a result, is far more common than many victims realise.

Around one in six men, or five million, in the country are estimated to experience rape or sexual violence in their lifetime.

Juan David Perea Lopez, 26, of New Cross, and 31-year-old Bashar Fares Al-Safee, from North Kensington, now face a combined 36 years behind bars after the National Crime Agency and Border Force investigation.

Officers had found the class A drugs hidden inside a refrigerated container shipped to London Gateway Port in Essex from Costa Rica, in 2016.

It had been due to be delivered to an industrial estate in north-west London.

The cocaine, hidden inside boxes with false bottoms, was found to be between 61 and 68 per cent pure and adulterated with Levamisole, a substance often used to deworm livestock, which drug suppliers commonly add to cocaine to increase volume and profits.

NCA officers monitored the container as it arrived at its delivery address on June 9, 2016 before making their move.

Lopez and Al-Safee were later charged with one count of conspiracy to import class A drugs, and one count of conspiracy to supply class A drugs. A third man was released without charge.

Last Friday (February 26), at Southwark Crown Court Al-Safee was sentenced to 21 years in prison, and Lopez to fifteen years after being found guilty following a seven-week trial.

The NCA investigation found that Lopez had leased the £17,000 perquarter industrial unit by pretending to work as an assistant to a Saudi Arabian Sheikh who needed the space to store high value cars.

Al-Safee had also hijacked the identity of a real fruit import business and set up false e-mail addresses and a virtual office in an attempt to appear legitimate.

NCA investigators said they were able to link Al-Safee to pre-paid ‘burner’ phones at the specific times they were used to arrange the importation.

They also obtained expert voice analysis to show that Al-Safee had arranged payment for the shipment with currency brokers – despite him using a false name.

The company that sent the consignment was investigated by Costa Rican authorities. This resulted in the arrest of one of the directors and the seizure of a tonne of cocaine following the search of a fruit packing plant.

The National Crime Agency’s head of regional investigations, Jacque Beer, said: “This seizure and the investigation that followed has kept a huge quantity of cocaine off UK streets, and brought traffickers to account in the UK and Central America.

“Lopez and Al-Safee sought to profit

Family appeal for witnesses to the attack in south east London to come forward

The heartbroken family of a man who needs specialist care for the rest of his life after a violent assault more than a decade ago are appealing for help, finally to bring his attackers to justice.

Marcus Bouskill, then aged 33, was found collapsed at his New Cross home in Parkfield Road, on February 26, 2008.

He had been involved in an altercation three days before in the early hours of Saturday, February, 23, outside Racks Snooker and Pool Bar in Well Hall Road in Eltham.

His injuries were so severe that he has remained in hospital, having round-theclock care, since.

Devastatingly, not only have those responsible so far evaded police, his family have also been unable to visit him due to COVID-19 restrictions - including over Christmas.

to The Crown pub in Court Road with colleagues and friends after work on the Friday evening (22 February, 2008).

He went on to visit Racks Snooker and Pool bar at about 11pm. At 1.30am the same night Marcus phoned a colleague due to pick him up for work at 8.30am that morning to say he would no longer be able to come in after suffering a ‘bit of a hiding’. He declined medical treatment, saying he was alright and went home in a cab.

At 9.30am the same colleague checked up on him and found Marcus covered in blood with a black eye, broken nose and no recollection of the attack.

The colleague stayed with him until midday and, believing him to be stable and recovering, left that afternoon.

After not hearing from Marcus for two days, worried friends contacted Marcus’ family. Officers forced entry and found him in a life-threatening condition after sustaining brain damage.

It is believed that Marcus and two of his friends were involved in an altercation with a group of youths in the bar and, after being thrown out by security staff, a fight broke out in the street.

In an appeal for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward, Marcus’ family said: “Marcus was our youngest son. He was a loving, caring young man and someone knows who did this.

“We urge you to come forward with the evidence you may have.

"Marcus did not deserve this, he was a healthy, fit roofer at the time of the attack and now he cannot walk or talk and is tube fed and confined to a

wheelchair.

“Someone, please have the courage to tell the truth about what happened to our boy, so we can somehow carry on with our lives and get Marcus the justice he deserves."

During the course of the investigation, detectives have followed and eliminated numerous investigative leads and have spoken to a large number of witnesses.

A total of ten people have been arrested as part of the investigation but have been released with no further action. Thirteen years later, officers say they are still pursuing a number of lines of enquiry.

Detective Constable Mike Morgan said: "Marcus has been described as a friendly and well-liked man who got on with everybody. This was a nasty attack which, tragically, changed his life forever.

“Marcus went on a night out with work colleagues thirteen years ago and, following an altercation, is still suffering to this day.

“For Marcus and his family, this is a life sentence. We need to catch those responsible and bring them to justice.

“We need to find out exactly what happened on the night of the attack and establish what led to the fight breaking out.

“We believe a number of white youths were involved that Marcus had previously met at the Post Office pub just a few weeks earlier, however, the cause of the altercation remains unclear.

“We know there were a lot of people in the area at the time the fight broke out.

Three judges, including the Lord Chief Justice Lord Burnett, refused to allow him to lodge permission to appeal on Wednesday, February 24.

Worboys, an ex stripper who lived in Rotherhithe, was first imprisoned in 2009 for nineteen sexual assaults against twelve women between 2006 and 2008.

The 63-year-old, who now goes by the name John Radford in prison, was convicted of a further four offences in 2019, dating back to 2000.

New victims had come forward in response to a later reversed decision by the Parole Board to release him in 2018, causing public outcry.

Police believed he could have attacked more than a hundred victims whom he picked up in his cab from the West End. Many were assaulted after he gave them alcohol laced with drugs while claiming to be celebrating a lottery or racing windfall.

Marcus when he was a young roofer before the attack, and now, wheelchair-bound and tube fed after sustaining serious brain damage.

Forty-three-year-old Edward Woodbridge, from Ardgowan Road in Lewisham, was sentenced to sixteen years and three months behind bars at Inner London Crown Court last Thursday, February 25.

He had been convicted by jury at the same court on January 7 after a trial for robbery; possession of an imitation firearm; possession of a firearm whilst committing a Schedule 1 offence; and grievous bodily harm with intent.

At around 6.40am on Thursday, September 12, 2019, Woodbridge cycled to a convenience store in Plough Way's Sirius Building.

Upon entering, he held a singlebarrelled gun to the cashier's head and threatened him with a knife as he demanded the safe was opened.

After being told there was no safe on site, Woodbridge attempted to access the till. A struggle followed as the staff member tried to disarm him.

During the struggle, the cashier - a man in his 40s - sustained deep cuts to his head, neck and hand.

Woodbridge grabbed cigarettes and less than £250 from the till before fleeing by bike toward New Cross.

During their investigation, the Met’s flying squad discovered Woodbridge had planned the robbery in advance, even conducting reconnaissance in the area the same morning.

He was arrested at home in Catford on Friday, November 1, 2019 and taken to Bromley Police Station where he was charged the same day.

Detective Inspector Gail Lilley, from the Flying Squad, said: “It was sheer luck that the injuries inflicted on the victim were not life threatening, his quick thinking actions in disarming Woodbridge of the knife may well have saved him from even more serious harm.

“I applaud his actions, although, I know from years of investigative experience that the effects of becoming a victim of violent crime can linger far beyond the healing of wounds.

“Woodbridge left the store with some cigarettes and £234, a haul that will cost him sixteen years of his freedom, something on which he can reflect as he serves his sentence.”

Members of staff from Lucas Vale Primary School produced the video as a ‘tribute’ for ‘all our brave children’.

‘I Look To You’ was originally sung by Whitney Houston and sold more than 550,000 copies worldwide.

Released in 2009, the song’s message of finding strength through adversity is as relevant as ever.

All primary and secondary schools have been closed since 5th January following the introduction of a third national lockdown.

The school shared the video in a tweet, saying: “For all our brave children. We will see you all soon.

‘Samosa into Space’ is an animated music video about the ‘smiles samosas put on your face’ made by students at the Rainbow Collective Animation Club.

While ‘stuck in lockdown three’, a group of people on earth decide to send a bag of the Indian snack into space.

As the rocket reaches outer space, the wonderfully drawn animations show how excited the aliens and spacelings are for their delivery.

The song’s catchy lyrics, written by musician Ibbi, will get the chorus of ‘They sent a samosa into space’ stuck in your head for weeks.

The film is the latest in a series made by the club during the lockdown.

The group of 8-12-year-olds kept audiences entertained with ‘Anime vs Coronavirus’; a short animation

about three popular anime characters heading to Peckham to destroy the coronavirus.

They also created a film celebrating their Black History Month heroes honouring the outstanding achievements of Lewis Hamilton, Martin Luther King and Barack Obama, to name just a few.

kids record their very own bedtime stories for adults

Budding young authors from a church in Kennington have been making their own bedtime stories just for grown-ups, writes Simon Throssell...

Every evening during Lent, children aged 3-14-years-old from St Anselm’s church have been writing and performing their own short stories.

There have been tales of scary woodland walks, missing hats and even friendly ‘Eggits’.

The project was the idea of youth minister Suzette Aagaard who said:

"We are a warm and supportive community at St Anselm's and not seeing each other in person every Sunday has really started to take its toll on many members of our congregation.

"As we are very blessed with wonderfully imaginative young people I thought it would be a lovely idea for the children to read a bedtime story to the adults as a way of lifting their spirits."

3,800 people watched the 24 hour row and £18,000 was raised for Macmillan

A Goldsmiths university student has raised £18,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support by completing a 24-hour virtual row, writes Simon Throssell...

As reported in the News in October, Tom Leeming decided to take on the mammoth endurance challenge after his brother Sam was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer.

Laughing, he said: “It sounds a bit silly but if I was to do anything less than row for 24 hours, what’s the point?”

The event was scheduled to take place in November at The Yard in Peckham but coronavirus restrictions meant that gyms were forced to close.

But that didn’t stop Tom’s

determination and he decided to organise a YouTube live-stream in January 2021 instead.

Three Thousand eight hundred people from across the world watched Tom and his friends Agni and Gareth row 640km in 24 hours.

The trio were joined by guest appearances from ultra athletes Fergus Crawley and Will Goodge, and TV comedian Joel Dommett.

Over £7,500 was donated during the stream bringing the total amount of money raised to £18,102; almost £17,000 more than Tom’s initial target of £1,500.

Speaking after the event, Tom said: “As painful as it was, seeing the support that

we had behind us and knowing that this money is going to be going to such a good cause made it all completely worth it.

“Throughout this whole event, I have struggled to put into words just how amazing the support has been so to everyone that has shared, donated, commented, ran along, rowed along, watched to the early hours THANK YOU.” Tom added: “Sam, thank you mate. For a lot of things really, you’re my biggest inspiration.

“A lot of the time you’re the reason I get up in the morning and for the most part you’re what kept me going through the darkest times.”

T

his week, we have seen the utter chaos of the government losing someone who has been allowed to enter the UK with the Brazilian strain of COVID.

The virus has had unfettered access through our airports for a year with Ministers belatedly introducing a ‘quarantine’ which is not being policed adequately.

Only one per cent of the people meant to be separating themselves at airports are doing so: 99 per cent continue their journeys across the country. When ministers claim ‘we did all we could’ they are simply devoid of integrity.

Thankfully, the vaccine is reaching more of us due to the tremendous efforts of our NHS and the council’s public health team.

The government should have used this structure last year to deliver an effective test and trace system, but chose untried and ultimately unsuccessful companies who were paid a fortune of public money but failed to keep us safe. Sadly, this failure, alongside late lockdowns from dithering ministers, contributed to the avoidable spread of COVID.

The government seems to think a clap now and then recognises the heroism of the health and social care frontline over the last year; I disagree and believe the budget should have rewarded all those who have faced the greatest risk in fighting the virus.

The government’s delays and failures over the last year have meant the UK also has the worst damage of any major economy from COVID. The budget was a chance to remedy the severe impact. Sadly, it was a missed opportunity with Tories having learnt very little from their mistakes of the last, lost decade of austerity.

One piece of fantastic news this week follows lengthy campaigns by Southwark Labour in conjunction with businesses, councils and the public. The next steps for the Bakerloo Line extension along the Old Kent Road and out to Lewisham are now guaranteed. This will bring jobs, boost transport options and connectivity as well as provide many homes, including an estimated 7,000 affordable homes. We are ready for this ‘shovel-ready’ project if the government helps resource it after starving Transport for London and our

capital city of funding for too long.

Ministers should remember that London makes a net contribution of £39 billion to the Treasury and we are integral to UK economic growth. Projects like the Bakerloo Line should be the economic shot in the arm after we have all had the vaccine shot in the arm!

Please ensure that everyone you know gets their vaccine when offered. There are cranks spreading weird conspiracy theories about it, so please report any of the dangerous leaflets being hand-delivered which we have seen in Walworth and bits of Bermondsey.

The police are investigating and I hope a prosecution is secured.

Anyone with genuine questions about the jabs should simply speak to their GP: It could save their life!

Finally, please remember that the UK has the worst excess death rate from COVID. It has killed 125,000 people, more than three times as many as the Blitz. We will only all be safe from this virus when everyone has had both jabs. In the meantime, please continue to take care, stay safe and protect our NHS and each other!

Transport and public health experts condemn the £2 billion tunnel, saying it will increase congestion and air pollution. Local councils and MPs at both ends oppose it. And it’s incompatible with the GLA’s aim of becoming carbon-neutral by 2030.

Despite all this, Sadiq Khan (Labour) and Shaun Bailey (Conservatives) refuse to rethink. Sian Berry (Green Party) says she’ll cancel it and invest in better public transport and safer walking and cycling instead.

‘It’s disgusting’ - Bermondsey pub on government’s roadmap The government have laid out a plan that is already highly risky, with schools opening in a 'big bang' rather than staging the year groups, and not making masks mandatory in schools. Pubs are just as bad, but less essential. I'm shocked they are planned to be opening as fast as they are. That being said, the government has so far only been talking about 'earliest possible' dates.

With opening schools the way they intend, they could well slip back.

We own a bar also and if people want a drink that bad which we’ve found is the case after a challenging year, a bit of rain won’t stop them! Also you’ve had a year to be innovative, many have opened as takeaway services in various ways. Cocktail bars are doing home delivery i.e. knocktails, cocktail in a bottle, drink drop etc that ranges from large scale businesses to small businesses. Wine tasting or craft beer kits for home are nice ideas and many people I know have got these. Nothing is impossible. Also maybe invest in some umbrellas outside? We did that ourselves.

We need to know why there’s a vaccine delay

B

ooking in the first vaccinations for all housebound patients in Southwark within the next two weeks - but with no clear timeline for when these will be administered - is troubling.

This could mean that healthy over 40s are being offered their first jabs not long after some of the most vulnerable, elderly people, who rely on carers for their daily needs.

The fact that so many care staff and NHS workers are also turning down vaccines they were offered far earlier only adds insult to injury. The fact that a healthy person in their 60s may have been vaccinated before a housebound elderly person just because they can travel to and from a centre is a scandal.

And the lack of information for families about why this is happening - and accountability - has shown how, yet again, disabled people and those with chronic conditions are often ignored and discriminated against in our society.

Although the vaccine rollout is a remarkable feat, something to celebrate, and gives us all the light we desperately need, glossing over the number of people who desperately want a vaccine but have yet to receive one is an insult to families who remain frantic with worry. Many of those unable to travel for vaccines cannot socially distance and need regular medical care. As restrictions ease through the roadmap, the risks will only increase.

We need a better understanding of why this is happening - and what the authorities are doing about it.

Help to break the stigma of Endometriosis

E

ndometriosis is a chronic, debilitating condition that can cost a sufferer their job as they battle constant pain and are left unable to work and cause a host of physical and mental health problems - even infertility.

For such a serious illness that affects a huge number of people to various degrees - some sufferers are effectively bedbound while others may have manageable symptoms - it is under researched and underfunded. Campaigners have long argued the issues that still surround diagnosis and treatment, including lengthy delays, are a legacy of historic dismissiveness towards ‘women’s problems’ and a confusion over what levels of pain and discomfort are to be expected during menstruation. We hope that the story of Camberwell’s ‘Endo Warrior’ Natasha can help other women get help far sooner, raise awareness amongst doctors, and help break the stigma.

East Street market legend laid to rest The extraordinary life of ‘Johnny the Toy Man’ and three generations of market traders

East Street Market legend John Wallington MBE JP passed away at the age of 82 last month, writes Katherine Johnston...

Popularly known as ‘Johnny the Toy Man’, the trader had worked at the Lane for over sixty years, following in his father’s footsteps.

Johnny died on February 5, 2021, after suffering from dementia and declining health in the last three years.

At the time of his death he had been living in the same care home as his beloved wife, Pat. A funeral was held last month under COVID-19 restrictions, but his family hope to hold a wake after lockdown ends to give a proper send off to the former secretary for the Southwark Association of Street Traders, founding member of the Mayor of Southwark Common Good Trust, and lifelong Millwall fan.

His daughter Kim Hannington, now based in Kent, told the News: “My Dad always said he was a south-east London boy through and through.

“That was his manor and he just loved East Street Market. The word ‘no’ wasn’t in his vocabulary and if he could help someone he would.

“He was such a loyal person who surrounded himself with people he knew were dependable and had the same values.

“Because of his loyalty he was loved by everybody. When he got his MBE people were coming up to him and congratulating him but he just said to me, ‘I never, ever done it for the accolades. I did everything because it was the right thing to do’.

“He would never have described himself as a hero but I think he was a people’s hero really.”

Three generations of the Wallington family traded at the market. John’s father - known as Salty sold salt and vinegar as a ‘trotter’ with his horse-drawn cart. He was followed into trading by John junior, and his son and Kim’s brother; Tony.

Kim remembers her father, who in his role at the market worked closely with Southwark Council, once being late home and leaving the family increasingly worried as the clock ticked past midnight.

It later turned out that as he left the council meeting he saw a young mum and her two children in the foyer, desperate after being evicted.

Then and there he and the other traders ran round to get her a fish and chip supper and find a hotel that could take her for the night.

“He was such a kindhearted man who couldn’t just walk past anyone who needed help,” Kim remembers.

And thanks to over 60 years working at the market, and a childhood growing up on nearby Amelia Street and at school in Larcom Street, Johnny was a well known figure across the borough. He was also one of those most dedicated to preserving its heritage and helping people in need.

He would never have described himself as a hero but I think he was a people’s hero really “Even on a cruise on the Mediterranean once someone shouted out ‘There’s Johnny from East Street,” Kim told the News, laughing.

“He did always say, you can take the boy out of south-east London but you can’t take south-east London out of the boy.

“He always said Southwark was the best place, and that we have the biggest hearts.

I think he’ll be missed by a lot of people.”

Along with organising day trips to Brighton and Cockney knees-ups, he also dedicated every Christmas to putting on a spread for hundreds of OAPs. His desire to help others was so strong that when he went into his care home he turned to his family and said: “I’m the one who helps the people here.”

John learnt his trade while still at St John’s Primary. During the war he had been brought up by his mum and uncle, a former sergeant major, who instilled the value of hard graft. His father, who had been stationed in Burma during the Second World War, later returned to London and ran a merry-go-round in the market, giving turns for a penny, or a jam jar, a go. It was the young Johnny’s first job to turn the handle.

Academically gifted as well as a hard worker, Johnny took up a scholarship at Wilson’s Grammar, and retained a lifelong love of education.

During his lifetime were East Street’s heydays. “Back then they used to stand at the top of the market and blow a whistle, and then everyone would run down and grab a pitch for the day,” Kim says. It was famously a market where you could buy anything, and one of the most famous in London.

Johnny met his wife Pat when she started working at a cafe by the market.

They later ran their stalls and shop together, and had two children.

Although the family are no longer stallholders they are immensely proud of their heritage and connection to Southwark.

Kim says she hopes to one day have grandchildren of her own she can take to the market, to show them where their family came from.

“We were brought up at the market market and I always say we had the

“It was important to him that the market survived and that the heritage of it was protected.

“It used to have a feeling, an atmosphere that was buzzing.

“It was so packed that people would pick up their children’s prams and carry them overhead.”

As Johnny had an open licence he could sell more or less anything - and did.

At one point they were giving customers

some of the first ever packaged readymeals, while also flogging chicken manure.

She also remembers some of her Dad’s madcap schemes including buying a sunken barge he had in the Thames.

“You could only get to it when the tide was out. It had all these slippers on it we were selling in the shop but they had to hang up to dry and made the place smell like mildew.

“He used to say if you could buy it then you could sell it.

“I hope someone else can step up and keep East Street Market going into the future, and help keep this heritage alive.”

One of the things she and her brother learned from their father was the value of trust in the community.

“He once gave some gifts to someone who didn’t have the money yet so they could have some Christmas presents.

I said to him ‘how do you know they’ll come back and pay?’ and he said ‘I know they will - and they did.

“His word was his bond.”

Lionesses and fans team up for ‘gruelling’ challenge

Money raised goes towards Millwall Community Trust’s project to help people find employment opportunities

The MSC have a number of members who are also lacing up their exercise shoes to take part, and Alex Russell from the MSC committee spoke of his delight at being able to help the local area.

“I was born and raised in south London and the Trust’s work has been absolutely vital to the community,” he said. “Unlike other virtual events, this challenge luckily doesn’t focus on one form of exercise, so I’m really looking forward to taking part in a number of different activities that are going to help get the mileage we need.”

The money raised from the event will go towards the MCT’s bursary project, which has been created to help those in the local area with any possible employment opportunities that arise in the future.

“At a young age when you’ve got your coaches telling you you’re going to become a world champion, it’s a wonderful feeling,” Kongo said.

“I was always told that but I knew you had to work, it’s not an easy route. I love the sport, it’s something I was doing every day. There were days when I wasn’t allowed to go to the gym and I was crying at home.

That shows my passion for it.

“I had the determination and always knew what I wanted to be from a young age.

“There was something about the coaching that was different to others to make you stay in the gym and stay dedicated.

“One thing our coaches did was keep us active, keep us fighting, making sure we were getting the

experience in regularly.”

Kongo explained where his nickname, 2Slick, came from.

“You always have to be training and active,” he said. “I got a last-minute call – you’re always only one phone call away.

“I was in college as well. It was London versus the Army at the weekend and I accepted. I was ready.

The guy previously beat me, I’d beaten him. I wanted to show my improvement “It was a dinner show, there was a boxing ring you and you had people sitting down, a lot of people from the military were there.

“I could hear a lot of the guys shouting, ‘too slick’ – I wasn’t getting hit.

“As soon as I got out of the ring and got my medal there were guys getting a picture with me and they were saying, ‘you’re too slick’.

“I had only one supporter, he’s a DJ, he came to support me because

my mum and my brothers were working, and he said, ‘you’ve got to keep that name’.”

Kongo was patient to see off the threat of Clay.

He explained: “As a fighter, one thing I’ve learned is that if I can hurt you I can definitely do it again.

I always knew once I’d hurt him I could hurt him again.

“There was never a doubt in my mind that I should have pressed more to get the knockout in that [earlier] round. I knew it was a good round for me and I was up in the scorecards as well. I knew, just keep winning the rounds, “It can go ten rounds, you have to keep going, keep pushing.”

Kongo was asked about his ultimate ambition, and didn’t hesitate to answer: “World champion, nothing less than that.

“Unified world champion in three to four different weight classes.

That’s pretty much my end goal.”

sport@southwarknews.co.uk MEMBERS OF the playing staff from the Millwall Lionesses, the Millwall Supporters’ Club (MSC) and a number of Millwall fans are coming together and joining forces to raise money through March for the Millwall Community Trust (MCT) and their new bursary project.

The combined challenge is to cover the gruelling distance of 6,720 miles virtually across Europe, and those representing the Lions will be up against thirteen other football clubs to see who can reach the finish line first.

Dave Elson, a life-long Millwall fan and proud resident of the local area, described his motivation to get involved.

“Living in Bermondsey all of my life, I’ve seen what the Millwall Community Trust has done for the area and the positive impact they have made on the lives of people of all ages and backgrounds,” he said. “I’m very proud to be making a contribution towards raising money for the Trust and look forward to keeping on banking the miles, hopefully inspiring others to do the same.”

Relentless ‘2Slick’ won’t stop in quest for ultimate goal

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk CHRIS KONGO has described his current intense and relentless regime ahead of his next bout – including 5am runs to avoid traffic and pollution.

Bermondsey’s Kongo, 28, has an unblemished 12-0 professional record including seven knockouts after his ninth-round finish of Luther Clay at Matchroom’s Fight Camp in Brentwood last August.

Kongo fights Michael McKinson as he defends his WBO global welterweight title on Alexander Povetkin versus Dillian Whyte 2 this Saturday, March 6.

McKinson, 26, is also unbeaten (19-0, 2 KOs), and has held the WBC Youth, WBC International Silver and WBO European welterweight titles.

“It’s hard work, it’s hard work,” Kongo told Millwall’s podcast, Wall Talk. “I like to do my early-morning

runs, they’re the best times, less cars on the road, less pollution and no one really sees you at that time.

“I’m up at 5am in the morning getting my jog.

“On Tuesdays and Wednesdays I’ll be with my strength and conditioning coach, they’re based in Rugby. I’ll make sure I’m conditioned to my peak.

“In the evenings I’ll either be doing a sparring session or a normal boxing session, technical stuff.

“We want to mix it up. Sometimes we’re training twice a day, sometimes three times a day but we know we’re getting in the work six days a week.”

Kongo, who is a Millwall fan, went to primary school five minutes from The Den. He took part in the club’s various community projects and credits it with keeping him on the right path.

Boss won’t take eye off ball Millwall heading for mid-table – but game stakes the same for Rowett

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL HAD to go back to go forward last month – as they posted their best goal return of the season in February.

Gary Rowett ditched his preferred three-man attack for two up front and an extra player in midfield, and Millwall scored ten league goals, two more than in any previous month this season.

One of Millwall’s big priorities in the summer transfer window will be to restructure their attack with signings.

But Rowett was pleased with the goal tally last month, as Millwall moved well clear of the bottom three.

“It’s ironic because we probably played the fewest attackers in those games,” Rowett said. “But it’s not just about chucking a load of attackers on the pitch to try to score goals, you’ve got to get the right framework and structure to score.

“We scored four goals against Sheffield Wednesday with a back five and three midfielders. It’s what those players do and how we play the game.

“It’s those clinical chances that we have to take. I can go to moments in nearly every game and ask us to be more clinical. That’s the key.

“In the Luton game we have a potential one-v-one before half-time and we don’t get a chance to shoot.

Mason Bennett has a chance [to equalise] against Barnsley and does brilliantly and maybe should score.

“It’s not criticism, those are the moments that define the games.

Against Sheffield Wednesday we were clinical in that game. We had no more chances than we had in other games but we scored goals in different ways.

“That’s what we’ve got to keep working towards and trying to improve. And of course future [transfer] windows will dictate how much and how quickly we’ll be able to improve that side of the game.”

Millwall are in a situation now in which relegation or a play-off challenge are unlikely outcomes this season.

But Rowett rejects the cliché his side can “take the shackles off” in their remaining twelve games.

Rowett said: “I think every game you have a go. It’s a difficult one, really, because sometimes people think taking the shackles off is playing gung-ho. If Championship football was that easy then everyone would play gung-ho football and games would be 7-6.

“It doesn’t work like that, you have to always look for the balance between attack and defence. That balance comes down to what players you’ve got, what are the strengths of your team.

“We’re not any different from a team at the bottom needing a win to get towards survival. You’re always playing for something. If you’re not playing to get to 50 points as quickly as you can you’re playing to get to 70 points to get a chance of the play-offs.

“I don’t think it changes.”

Millwall host Blackburn this weekend, a side that were in play-off contention at the end of last month before their form nosedived.

“They’ve got very good players in their team, they’re trying to get that consistency back,” Rowett said.

“We could go through virtually every team in this division and say at some point they’ve had a wobble.

Depending on how big your wobble has been probably dictates where you are in the league or how good your players are to get through it.

“Blackburn are one of those sides capable of beating anyone on their day and maybe they’ve just found a little period where they can’t quite find the formula to get out of it.

“But there is plenty of the season to go and they’ve got the players that can score goals.

“Again, we know it’s going to be tough. Blackburn are one of those teams who have the firepower to be up around those play-off positions.

They’re probably like all of us, trying to look for that right balance in their team and consistency, which is not easy.”

The Lions have ventured into this part of South Yorkshire eleven times since 1995 and have left with just two wins, and seven defeats.

What is in the air up there? This

Mason Bennett misses a chance to level time, Millwall had taken an impressive nine-game unbeaten run with them, yet it took just two minutes for that to be under threat when Cauley Woodrow put the not-so-welcoming hosts ahead.

After a Barnsley move had broken down on the edge of the Millwall box, Wallace quickly set Bennett away in the inside-left channel and the forward finished low into the far corner.

But it almost felt inevitable when the Tykes’ second goal arrived through Michal Helik in the 59th minute.

Millwall didn’t help themselves from the start, giving away a freekick that Alex Mowatt floated into the box. It looked like the ball came off a Barnsley player with Woodrow offside, but the striker didn’t hesitate to score his twelfth goal of the season.

his third goal of the season.

Bennett targeted Michael Sollbauer in the first half have and terrorised the right-sided centre-back.

Unfortunately for the Lions, Tykes boss Valerien Ismael acted at the break and replaced the defender with Toby Sibbick and his side were more solid in the second half.

Barnsley are hugely physical and Rowett said afterwards the most direct side in the league. The home team were a threat from almost every attacking set-piece, and at the other end dealt with their opponents’ deliveries.

Bart Bialkowski was forced into two excellent saves, first to tip over from Mowatt’s free-kick before he brilliantly denied Woodrow a second.

However, he could do nothing for the winning goal as a corner was only half-cleared and then Shaun

Hutchinson and Alex Pearce got in each other’s way as they tried to clear the ball back in. That left Helik unmarked, and he smashed a volley into the top-left corner.

Bennett had Millwall’s best chance to equalise but lifted his effort over the bar after a long ball forward.

Barnsley went close to doubling their advantage late on but Bialkowski made another superb diving save to claw away Carlton Morris’ header.

The Tykes’ second-half dominance gave them a deserved win, but Millwall will be disappointed with the nature of the two goals they conceded, especially after letting in only four in that unbeaten run.

The play-offs now look out of reach, but Rowett will want his side to finish as high in the table as possible before the summer will offer the opportunity to further strengthen the squad.

Jed Wallace shoots against Wycombe

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JED WALLACE has praised Gary Rowett for a tactical tweak that reversed Millwall’s form and saved them from a potential relegation battle.

After Millwall’s 3-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest in January meant only one league win in fifteen league games, Rowett switched from a 5-2-3 formation to 5-3-2.

Playing in the latter system for the first time this season, the Lions went to Huddersfield and won 1-0 and then built the Championship’s longest unbeaten run, nine matches.

That sequence ended at Barnsley last weekend, but from being just seven points above the bottom three Millwall moved fourteen points clear of the drop-zone ahead of the meeting with Preston on Tuesday to all but banish any relegation fears.

Wallace admitted he worried about the fate of the team after the defeat at the City Ground.

“After the Forest game as a group we were low on confidence, I don’t think anyone was playing well. After that result I starting thinking, ‘where’s the next win coming from?’” Wallace said.

“Although we weren’t losing many games, and we had a lot of draws but not a lot of good draws which always puts a negative spin on things.

“But then full credit to the gaffer, he tinkered with the formation a little bit and put three in midfield and two up front rather than the other way around and we looked what we have been since the gaffer’s been here, which is a top-half Championship team.

“If we are pushing towards the top half then that’s a huge overachievement for Millwall. But we’re always looking to push on, we want to finish in the top twelve again this season and then that’s three out of four seasons we’ve really consolidated and looked a very good Championship team.

“There are not many teams in the last 20 years at Millwall that have done that consecutively in the Championship.

“It’s a difficult season with the amount of games we’ve had and it’s been important to rotate the team.

“We’ve got a lot of injuries and we’re pushing, there are a few of us who have played a lot of minutes. But we haven’t got the luxury of some other teams to make five or six changes every other game, so it’s been demanding physically, especially with the pitches.

“It’s always been said Millwall come

strong the second half of the season and you saw that, and it’s credit to the manager. He’s shown why he’s been a good manager at this level over the years, because when we were low in confidence it was just a slight tweak in the system and we were a really good side again.

“We went back to the basics and the absolute minimum we should achieve is 0-0, it’s then down to the players to create chances and the centre-halves to get on the end of set-plays.

“As we know in this league, especially for us, one goal either way is huge for us.”

Wallace was brought to Millwall by Neil Harris – twice on loan before a permanent move – and has been one Rowett’s most-trusted players.

Wallace has a lot of regard for both men.

He said of Rowett: “He sets the mood.”

Wallace added: “I’ve been lucky at Millwall with Neil and Gary when first and foremost they’re nice guys.

I know it sounds stupid, but the players respect them as people before managers.

“The lads really liked Neil and they really like the gaffer now, and that’s important because he’s got us all on board.

“We never doubted that we would

turn the form around. Confidence is such a big part of football and when you’re drawing 1-1 instead of winning it does take a little bit of the stuffing out of you at times.

“Then we had a little bit of luck that we hadn’t had: Huddersfield missing a penalty, Sheffield Wednesday when we hadn’t been playing great we got a penalty, Scott Malone produces some magic and Thommo [Ben Thompson] mis-hits one and it goes in the net. We hadn’t had those little bits of luck over the season.

“It’s down to us turning two or three of those draws into wins and then you’re talking about little old Millwall competing with clubs like Bournemouth and Watford who have been Premier League clubs the last three or four years.

“It just goes to show how close we are and how well we have done, to be even within ten points of these clubs compared to where we were six weeks ago. It also shows how quickly things in football can change.”

“We’re a fiery group anyway,” Wallace says. “We never lack effort and always give our all. As players we take it more personally and are disappointed we’ve

let down the manager, rather than him shouting at us.

“He asked us to play a certain way against Forest and we didn’t execute the game plan, so we felt much worse.

“Football has moved on from [managers shouting at players]. We feel worse if we’ve let ourselves down tactically. We’re never going to pull out of a tackle – Murray Wallace, Alex Pearce, even the forward players: Thommo, Matt Smith, myself – that’s not the type of group we’ve got.

“The gaffer keeps us on our toes, which we need, and we have good staff and good characters.

“When we’re struggling a little bit it’s important to have people like [assistant manager] Adam Barrett.

People like Ads, you walk in and it’s, ‘good morning, how are you doing?’

It’s a mood-lifter, that’s what you need.

“A lot of people like to blame other people a lot of the time in football when things go wrong, but we’ve never done that.

“The gaffer and Ads made it clear we needed to stick together. And we did stick together. We need to carry on going because, as we’ve seen, it can change very quickly one way or the other.

“We need to get ourselves away from that group at the bottom and get ourselves towards that top six.”

Just when we think that Millwall’s season is beginning to peter out, they turn in a win and a performance that suggests they are still in the race for the playoffs.

The first half an hour of Tuesday’s game against Preston was one that Lions fans will be glad they missed.

could barely control the ball let alone pass it.

We have come to expect a Millwall side under Gary Rowett that will try to get the ball down, pass and play some nice football.

But as they trailed Preston there was too much long-ball stuff – perhaps they wanted to keep it as far away from the dire Den turf as possible.

Added to that frustration, the Championship is notoriously a very tough league in which to come from behind to win.

Yet they turned it around and Millwall dominated the last hour of this game.

They have won four league games in the last month, three of them after conceding first. The Lions have now won sixteen points from losing positions this season, the second best in the Championship behind Brentford who have 21.

It’s all the more impressive considering fans are not present inside stadiums.

A feature of the first half was Millwall giving the ball away in midfield and this led to the Preston’s opener. The ball was launched into the box, George Evans’ clearing header falling to Ched Evans and the striker hit a superb first-time volley that flashed across Bark Bialkowski into the right corner.

Then, cometh the hour – well, the 39th minute, to be exact – cometh the man.

Scott Malone has been Millwall’s goto man for the key goals and assists this season. He is such a positive, energetic player in that left wingback role and was the main force behind creating chances against the Lilywhites.

After missing an opportunity created by the other wing-back, Mahlon Romeo, he supplied one for Mason Bennett who was unfortunate not to make contact with the ball.

Malone is having his own one-man, goal-of-the season competition.

After his Gazza-esque strike against Sheffield Wednesday seemed to settle the debate, he served up another one for the season’s highlights reel.

After receiving the ball from Romeo midway inside Preston’s half, he charged forward into the space created by runners off him and lashed a curling shot with the outside of his left foot into the top-left corner.

It was another case of Malone creating something from little as he scored his fifth goal of the season in all competitions. If Millwall had more of those players they would surely be much higher in the table. Rowett will make it a priority to try to sign Malone on a permanent deal from Derby in the summer.

Millwall took the game to Alex Neil’s side in the second half, almost completely dominating, and the only surprise was that it took them so long to get the winner.

Other than Greg Cunningham firing wide of the post, Preston were barely a threat.

Millwall relentlessly drove at their opponents. Even Ryan Woods, usually the assured screen in front of the defence, gallivanted forward. The midfielder played Jed Wallace in on the right side of the box but it was a difficult angle and the shot missed the far post.

Billy Mitchell, on his first start of the season and playing with confidence beside Woods, fired a shot towards goal from another Romeo pass. The ball seemed to strike an arm, but it was yet another penalty Millwall appeared to be denied this season as Keith Stroud played on.

Bennett has been in fine form this year after fitness issues earlier in the season. The Lions just couldn’t seem to get him to let alone keep him at 100 per cent, but he showed again on Tuesday he can be one of the most threatening attackers in the league.

He scored goals against Reading and Barnsley last month and he was on the scent again. He went within a whisker of giving the Lions the lead on 67 minutes. Jon Dadi Bodvarsson was fouled as he did brilliantly to wriggle away on the right. Stroud played advantage, Bodvarsson curled a delicious ball into the centre but Bennett’s first-time effort wasn’t delicate enough as the ball clipped the crossbar and went over.

But Bennett wouldn’t be denied.

With four minutes left, Woods beat one man in midfield before he lifted the ball over the top of the Preston defence. It should have been Daniel Iversen’s, but for whatever reason the goalkeeper hesitated and the little man beat him to the punch to nod into the empty net. It was reminiscent of Maradona versus Shilton in 1986 – but without the controversy.

Millwall deservedly held on to reduce the gap to sixth to seven points before Wednesday’s games.

As we saw in 2017-18 and last season – right up until the last two games – when Millwall have momentum they are tough to stop.

They have it at the moment. Don’t rule them out of the race just yet.

It looked like it would be a long night in another dark, empty stadium when Ched Evans gave Preston a twelfth-minute lead.

But the Lions hit back in stunning fashion through Scott Malone six minutes before the break before Mason Bennett’s winner late on.

“It was the perfect response, although I didn’t feel that way after about 25 minutes,” Rowett said.

“As it tends to happen recently we don’t start as well as I’d like.

“Going 1-0 down knocked our confidence a bit, I think, and we started going backwards and playing too slowly. Preston were set up to pick off the poor passes and counter-attack us.

“Beyond that I thought we were by far the better side and limited them to virtually nothing. It looked like only a matter of time for us to score and for 65 minutes, we looked excellent.

“In the Championship, most teams that go a goal up don’t tend to go on and lose the game, but what we’ve done is show different ways to win a game.”

When the Lions lost 3-1 to Nottingham Forest on January 16 they were only seven points above the bottom three.

But a nine-game unbeaten run following that reverse pushed Millwall fourteen points above Rotherham in 22nd before Tuesday’s game against Preston. It would take a hugely unlikely collapse in form for Gary Rowett’s side to drop into a relegation scrap with twelve games left.

Millwall went through a ten-game winless run from October to December and won only one in fifteen in the league, but even then they showed their resilience was still there with creditable draws against promotion-chasing Bournemouth and Norwich. Only six of the games were defeats.

Smith knew the side would eventually emerge from that tough spell.

“Absolutely, I don’t think there were games where we had been blown away, we were always very, very competitive,” Smith said.

“The desire to turn a few of those draws into wins was there, against the top sides we’ve been pretty good.

“There was that confidence there from last season, finishing eighth after 46 games is no mean feat.

“We did have that inner belief that we could start putting more points on the board and we find ourselves in a good position.”

There was no panic at Calmont Road despite Millwall slipping out of the play-off positions and dropping to seventeenth after their 2-1 defeat at home to Coventry on January 2.

Smith revealed Rowett is open to taking on board the thoughts of his more experienced players.

Smith said: “The manager always has open dialogues with us senior pros, he has done the minute he came through the door.

“I remember having a meeting with him almost instantly. He’s always lent on the senior players in terms of group morale, how we’re feeling, what we’re thinking.

“As a collective we’ve always been a very close group, which has been welldocumented, over time. The team spirit is incredible at Millwall and it is one of our biggest strengths, the strength of the pack.”

Millwall enjoyed their most productive month in the league in front of goal in February, scoring ten times in seven games.

They had only scored five goals in six games the previous month.

“Form in front of goal largely boils down to confidence, and goals breed confidence. You sometimes get something out of nothing and then build on that,” Smith said.

“We obviously practise patterns of play, crossing and finishing. It’s ultimately the clinical touch that’s going to push you up the league.

“We’ve scored a few more goals and that can only stand us in good stead.”

Meanwhile, the Lions are again without Ryan Leonard, Murray Wallace and Kenneth Zohore against Blackburn Rovers at The Den this Saturday.

Rovers were eighth at the end of January and seemingly poised to challenge for the top six, but they have since slipped out of play-off contention.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JED WALLACE has urged some realism around Millwall for the rest of the season – pointing to an injury list that has recently seen more than half a first team ruled out.

Coming into this week, Millwall had Jake Cooper, Connor Mahoney, Maikel Kieftenbeld, Ryan Leonard, Murray Wallace and Kenneth Zohore in the treatment room. All could arguably be in a first-choice starting XI. Millwall went on a nine-game unbeaten run in the league from midJanuary to late February to briefly raise hopes that they could mount another promotion challenge.

But injuries to key players and the

relentless nature of the campaign realistically means a top-half finish could be regarded as success.

Millwall’s target before the season was a top-six challenge, and many fans expected it after they achieved eighth last season.

“We’ve got to be realistic, we’ve got an injury crisis,” Wallace said. “This season was always going to be about who could keep their best players fit, and a few of our best players are in the physio room.

“We have good characters in the squad who can come in and make a difference, the likes of Willo [Shaun Williams], Pearcey [Alex Pearce], with their leadership.

“Probably ten weeks ago there were people who were miles away, like Ben Thompson who is now a big player for us.

“Getting Billy Mitchell back is a big one, I know he’s only a young lad but he can play a couple of positions.

“Mahlon [Romeo] has returned to good form, Danny Mac is pushing Mahlon. There are a lot of positives.

“But a few weeks ago I was looking at it in training and thinking we might have a couple of established pros that might not even make the nine-man bench. Now it’s if you’re fit you’re probably going to be playing.

“It can change so quickly. But if we can hang around that top half and with players like Coops coming back, Kief who did well, Connor, we’ve got a lot of lads that can make us stronger from where we are now.

“I’d like to think the squad couldn’t get many more injuries so hopefully we can get a little bit of luck on that side and push on.”

Wallace has been impressed with what January signing George Evans has added to the squad. Evans has played mostly in defence and rescued a point for the Lions with a 95th-minute equaliser at Luton last month.

“George has been a massive addition for us, much like Ryan Leonard, Murray Wallace – guys you can rely on week-in, week-out,” Wallace said.

“He’s six foot, physical, good on the ball. He’s going to be a really good player for Millwall over the next two or three seasons.

“We’re happy to have him and he’s probably not even played his best position yet and he’s done as well as he has. That’s a promising sign.

“And the sooner we get players back and have even more competition for places then we’re going to be stronger towards the end of the season.”

Lions boss ‘frustrated’ with lack of options

Connor Mahoney and Maikel Kieftenbeld are again set to be absent for this Saturday’s game against Blackburn at The Den. Ryan Leonard, Murray Wallace and Kenneth Zohore are also out, while Millwall continue to nurse Jake Cooper through after his second shoulder dislocation of the season.

The Lions thought Mahoney (quad) and Kieftenbeld (hamstring) would make February returns before both suffered setbacks.

Mahoney has been out since November, and Kieftenbeld has played just three-and-a-half games out of nine after being recruited in January to offer the side more ballwinning ability in midfield.

“At this moment in time I would say it’s highly unlikely either of them will be available on Saturday, which of course is hugely frustrating,” Rowett said.

“At the moment you can see if we could just get two of the six injured players back it would give us the ability to just rotate, change the formation, change one or two players, be able to make good decisions to keep the performance levels high.

“There are some players hanging on and they’ve just got to keep going again. We haven’t had the opportunity to freshen up in key areas.

“We could really do with some of those back but, again, part of Championship life is you’ve just got to crack on through and stay competitive.”
