By Simon Throssell news@southwarknews.co.uk Sadiq Khan has urged Londoners to get their coronavirus vaccinations after he received his first jab on Friday, with Southwark Council holding a free webinar so residents can ask questions about the vaccine.

The Mayor of London, who has severe asthma, was vaccinated with his first dose of the Pfizer vaccine at Mitcham Lane Baptist Church in southwest London.

Describing his vaccination experience, Mr Khan said: “I’m relieved and very grateful.”

Southwark Council is eager to dispell any concerns or falsehoods around the vaccinations in a webinar.

Chance to have your say on Canada Water’s smaller regeneration project

Dubbed the ‘Canada Water Dockside’, it sits beside the £4 billion masterplan

Much has been made of the 53 acre-site of the Canada Water masterplan, which among other headline hitting developments will see the first new high street in London in 100 years.

But beside British Land’s plan is a

five acre site on the dockside of Canada Water spanning Surrey Quays Road over to what is currently Hawkers House.

Ideas for the site that includes the former Decathlon store is being led

by Art-Invest Real Estate and they are asking local residents to say what they want to see developed there.

Early plans are for commercial and office space, with the developer asking what retail, community and improved outdoor space people would like to see at street level.

The idea is to make Canada Water a new town centre. British Land’s £4 billion master plan is the largest in Southwark’s history. It will see the creation of around 3,000 new homes, of which 35 per cent are affordable, up to 20,000 new jobs and a new leisure centre. Fifteen years in the making, twelve acres of the colossal masterplan will be given over to new open space, including a 3.5-acre park and new town square, plus the first high street in London for 100 years alongside

The five acre site that Art-Invest Real Estate is developing is tiny in comparison. But from early discussions with residents from its first consultation held last month, carried out online, there is a push for more retail space, and places to eat and drink on the waterfront with access to the proposed park in British Land’s master plan.

Last week we reported on how Southwark Council has agreed to buy a site in the Canada Water Masterplan from British Land for 79 new ‘affordable’ homes near Russia Dock Woodland. It was the first milestone since the £4bn masterplan was approved.

A legal challenge to overthrow planning permission for the huge scheme was thrown out of court by a judge last November. The wholesale regeneration was approved in June 2020, and now the first stage of work is imminent.

Ali Abbas, who heads up Art-Invest Real Estate in the UK, said of the smaller site they are developing: “We are grateful for the feedback we received from the local community regarding their key priorities for the local area in January.

We are now excited to bring forward

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Weeks without regular bin collections have turned Southwark's streets into a 'rubbish tip' overrun with rats, say residents appalled at the faltering service throughout the cold snap.

In the most bizarre excuse yet, she claims one call handler tried to tell her that her street had not been visited because it simply did not exist.

Many residents have taken to Twitter to complain, including those with rubbish sitting outside since January.

In an e-newsletter sent out to residents last week, Tooley Street officials said: “We apologise for the recent disruption to waste and recycling collections.

“Unfortunately our teams faced a double challenge last week, with the bad weather compounding the impact of COVID on members of our staff, many of whom are unwell or self-

isolating.

“We are doing all we can to return to a near normal service by the beginning of next week.

Residents are urged to report collections more than 24 hours late online via the council’s website.

Rats have been having a field day during the pandemic, with fewer street waste collections, and more household rubbish due to lockdown playing a part.

According to the British Pest Control Association, rodent sightings have risen by 41 per cent. It is believed that the rat population grew by a quarter in 2020 in Britain - to around 150 million.

As the News has reported, around a third of waste collection staff are currently off sick or self-isolating due to COVID-19, putting huge pressure on the service.

Bermondsey resident Maria Lanzalaco says recycling and rubbish is piling up by her block in Snowsfields.

“Southwark insist they will collect within three days. They don't come, so I leave it outside until next week.

Landlords then complain to us.

“Now I just take it out myself to the paladin in the car park of Bermondsey village Hall. But that is often full.

“I'm too busy to go through the rigmarole of logging this every single week online.

"The website doesn't allow you to add all the dates. It's impossible to speak to anyone.”

She said Rock Grove Way, where her mother lives in sheltered housing, is also ‘disgraceful’ with rats running around the strewn and overflowing rubbish.

One reader Tweeted us this picture of Beech House in Rotherhithe’s Ainsty Estate, saying their area had missed out on three weeks of collections.

It was a similar situation at Wrayburn House in Dickens Estate, which has had no collections for more than two weeks, with residents reporting rats since collections were cancelled due to bad weather last week.

Another frustrated resident from St Saviour's Estate, Michael Paolillo, said: “I understand we are in a pandemic but this is a service that must keep ongoing.”

He said that although he was only speaking for his area, he felt the council had “let down the whole of Southwark”, as while still being charged for the service it was "clearly not getting done".

“It’s been like this for months just got worse and worse. There is no way COVID can be blamed as other services have kept going without issues.”

He says the filth is so bad in his estate he now dreads using communal lifts and staircases because of the grime, and no longer enjoys going for a daily walk with his three children.

In Camberwell, Karen Jacobs said she was terrified emboldened rats, now living in overflowing bins, would soon get into her house.

She moved into the property on January 25 and despite stumping up more than £300 council tax for February and March has yet to see a single collection.

“The rubbish is piling up and the foxes are ripping open the bin bags leaving mess everywhere,” she told the News.

“Obviously we clean up the mess, and we bleach outside by the bins and where the rubbish is, but soon as you touch the bags you're greeted by rats.”

Describing the situation as "disgusting and unhealthy" she said the council had also blamed the problems on snow, ice, staff sickness and told her to fill in the missed collection form

“A number of our operatives have been self isolating, in line with government guidelines, shielding or absent as a result of COVID-19.

“Every effort has been made to recover missed collections as safely

and efficiently as possible, including taking on extra staff and running catch up rounds in the afternoon.

“We anticipate all collections will be completed and the services return to normal, COVID notwithstanding, by the end of this week.

“We appreciate resident frustration and ask them to bear with us during this very difficult time. We are doing everything we can to guarantee a good service and ask residents to check the Council’s webpages for service updates or to report a missed collection.”

Southwark’s £101M for climate action

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Two years after first declaring a ‘climate emergency’, Southwark Council hopes to commit £101 million in funding to bring the borough closer to carbon neutral status by 2030.

A vote on the budget and priorities for climate action was due to be held on Wednesday’s full council assembly, after the News went to press.

Tooley Street says the new proposals build on recent announcements including achieving 100 per cent renewable energy in its council building, and a 25 per cent reduction in the council’s own emissions.

Both policies had been greeted with a lukewarm response from campaigners, who have become increasingly frustrated by delays in publishing a long-awaited, final version of the council’s Climate Emergency Strategy.

Commitments announced before the budget-setting meeting had included plans to plant 10,000 trees, double the number of cycle hangars, create 60 new School Streets with timed road closures, and divesting council funds away from fossil fuels.

But Extinction Rebellion campaigners say the 10,000 trees will mostly cover historic losses and the numbers pale in comparison to the ambition shown by other local authorities, such as Enfield, whose target is ten times higher with 100,000.

Campaigners also question why the council has renewed fossil fuel energy contracts and has been unable to roll out clean energy in its council housing stock and school buildings faster.

The council says climate action is one of its two key priorities for the post COVID-19 recovery: helping younger people and investing in a greener future for everyone.

At the assembly, Cllr Johnson Situ, the cabinet member for climate emergency, planning and transport is expected to announce that all council buildings will have their insulation and glazing upgraded and switched to air source heat pumps and solar panels, as well as a roll out of electric vehicle charging.

Cllr Situ told the News in advance of the vote: “A different kind of future

is possible and Southwark Council will be placing our response to the climate emergency at the heart of it.

“I look forward to developing strong links across the borough’s diverse and creative communities.

“We will also be working with schools, churches, businesses, developers, financiers and more.

“Because everybody has a role to play in protecting our planet and building a better future.”

Liberal Democrat councillor Graham Neale said his party was pushing the council to speed up its climate action ten-fold, and said it was imperative Tooley Street stopped using fossil fuels and focused on a ‘robust’ transport plan that didn’t just talk about cycling and walking.

“The single biggest threat to our planet is the impact of us. It was 2019 over two years ago that this council declared a climate emergency and we are still debating a strategy about carbon reduction with no clear action plan.

“We have to act now and be more ambitious to rapidly adopt climate change actions covering our energy needs, housing needs, travel habits, shopping and food supplies and of course our biodiversity for Southwark.

“Let’s be the leaders as one of the largest local authorities in London and the UK. “Just reducing our climate change impact is no longer enough.

“We must embark on an ambitious plan of reversing climate change now.”

100% divestment of their pension in 2016, progress has slowed down.

Shockingly, it has since increased direct investments in fossil fuel companies, with £3.65m currently invested in Shell.

“You can argue over what flowers to put in parklets, but what is the point when you can’t see the woods from the burning trees,” she said.

In response to Caoimhe’s speech, Tooley Street’s environment chief Cllr Situ said the two key actions implemented by the council so far were: 100 per cent renewable electricity in all council buildings, and that carbon offsetting payments from developers have been raised from £60 to £90 blasted as a ‘pay to pollute’ get-out clause for emissions.

Neither have impressed Extinction

Rebellion, who say the council is too quick to pursue costly demolitions and rebuilds rather than retrofitting and refurbishments.

So far there is no publicly available information on how much income has been generated by developers’ carbon payments in Southwark, or how it has been spent.

A key criticism from environmentalists is that the council’s plans so far do not put climate action at the heart of its work but instead are attempting to shoehorn targets into pre-existing plans.

Of most concern is the council’s idea that a series of amendments can be made to the New Southwark Plan, rather than revisiting the landmark document and starting from scratch with baseline climate targets.

The New Southwark Plan sets out the housing, development and transport future for the borough.

What is agreed in the plan, and how it corresponds with any climate commitments could have the biggest impact on Southwark’s largest regeneration plan to date, on the Old Kent Road.

Cycle ways Greater Manchester has a ten-year plan to build 120 km of segregated cycle routes on main roads, and over 1,400 new or upgraded cycle and pedestrian crossings. Southwark has so far aimed only to reduce trips by cars/motorbikes by 13 per cent by 2041.

Housing standards Ipswich and Cambridge require all new homes to meet a standard equivalent to the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4. This environmental assessment delivers a 19 per cent improvement on the current national standards.

Sustainable investment Enfield Council has allocated ten per cent of their funding to sustainable infrastructure, compared to 2.5 just per cent so far in Southwark.

Raising funds for climate action Nottingham City Council charges a levy for large workplace parking. It has so far raised £61 million put back into improving public transport.

How much inheritance tax must I pay?

If a person is widowed and inherited their spouse or civil partner’s estate on death, an executor can claim an allowance known as the Transferable Nil Rate Band (TNRB) so that the first deceased’s spouse/ civil partner’s NRB and RNRB can be utilised fully. This means a married couple or civil partners can pass on a combined estate currently of up to £1million IHT free to the next generation. It is important to note that there is no IHT between spouses or civil partners, so if a person leaves their estate to a spouse or civil partner in its entirety, there is no change to IHT at that time.

Leaseholder charged SOME £85,000 in five years

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A leaseholder who has challenged Southwark Council in court for times over major works bills has been told she could have to pay £45,000 toward a new roof - just six years after being charged £25,000 for a district heating upgrade.

Michelle Baharier, who bought her Gilesmead Estate council flat in 2008 through right to buy, told the News she had spent years in therapy and receiving specialist help from the Maudsley Hospital after nearly losing her home in 2015 while disputing an extraordinary major works bill.

Despite being heavily in debt, she and other owners in the block - many of whom are remortgaged to the hilt - have been told Gilesmead, which has 40 flats, now needs a whopping £1.4 million spending on work to fix the roof.

Included in the staggering estimated costs - which could run far higher - are £90,000 of unspecified ‘COVID-related fees’, £42,000 for a temporary office site for contractors to use over 30 weeks, showers and toilets, and even a landline installation.

Work on the roof itself is just £400,000 of the overall budget, with £200,000 predicted on as yet unspecified ‘preliminaries’.

Michelle has previously successfully disputed being charged £7,000 for her front door being repainted - eventually haggling Tooley Street down to £1,500 - and was also charged £1,000 for communal lighting changes, all on top of a £3,100 annual service charge that has more than doubled in a decade.

She said she had no idea how she could pay up or what the future will hold.

“There is just no accountability,” she said.

“As leaseholders we have no control. They don’t care if you end up with a bad product that is hugely expensive - I have no rights.

“They’ve now charged me about £85,000 in five years - who can pay that?”

They even included costs for a fax machine. Who uses landlines and fax machines nowadays?

Michelle successfully won her case against the council’s district heating plans at a first tier tribunal. But after a challenge was brought by the council once again, she then found her costs escalating and ended up having to pay the full sum - with £6,000 interest.

“Money worries are the biggest mental health issue and they could have wiped off that interest but no, they went after me”, she said.

“The Labour Party is campaigning for leasehold to be outlawed and here they are at Southwark Council spending more on legal teams going after people than getting it right in the first place.

“I’m not questioning major works and my lease makes it clear we have to pay for them but the costs will be ‘reasonable’.

“If the council wants to work with us then they have to do things in a transparent way.

“I want them to take some of this money and give it to us leaseholders to pay a surveyor, an expert, who can go through it with a fine tooth comb and cut out all the fat and what I think is double charging.

“They should guarantee that no leaseholder will lose their home, and when works aren’t up to standard claim on the insurance.”

As this paper has reported, council leaseholders are in a particularly difficult position financially because although they often have bought flats with the right to buy discount, many are unaware of the costly burden of often short notice major works.

The council is legally obliged only to charge for actual expenditure, meaning it cannot build up reserves, either.

But what counts as value for money, and how competitive quotes are is another matter.

Leaseholders are offered plans for repayment and loans from the council - but these also come with caveats including being unable to challenge the bill in court. If they go unpaid, the council does have the power to repossess.

Michelle believes lack of maintenance, underinvestment, and an unwillingness to drive down costs is the real reason for spiralling costs.

“You have more rights as a tenant and are at much greater risk of becoming homeless as a leaseholder,” she added.

The reason she bought her flat in the first place was to benefit from a government grant for new heating.

But after being told she had no choice but to remain on the council’s district heating network, she has now helped pay for a new system - to replace one in place since the 1960s - that has now broken down three times this year. As of Tuesday, she had been without heating for three days, with no automatic right to compensation.

“We don’t have a choice of disconnecting or getting compensation,” he said.

“The council says the upkeep and maintenance is shared across the leaseholders so those who disconnect are pushing costs onto others and that is why it costs tens of thousands to disconnect.

“It is like we are being held to ransom and handcuffed to a service that isn’t working. It is so unreliable we should be able to disconnect. They are proposing about £5,000 to £10,000 to replace the pipes but there is no guarantee it will work but we have to pay upfront whether it fixes it or not. There is constant investment in the district heating and it’s not resolving.”

Regular outages throughout the particularly cold winter have been a huge toll on residents, especially those working in frontline roles unable to come home to a hot shower.

Even worse, he says the new pumps are also so loud that residents are unable to sleep and are suffering worsening mental health.

“There are people with clinical diagnoses of depression due to sleep deprivation,” Tom continued.

“One woman actually moved out for a few months because she couldn’t cope

with the noise and others are relying on prescription drugs to sleep. When it was warmer one person got a blanket and slept in his car for a bit.”

After an enquiry from this paper, Southwark Council was able to provide limited information about its new ‘flat rate’ compensation policy for residents.

Exactly how this works for leaseholders and tenants remains unclear. Tom says heating his own flat for one day with a 3kw fan heater costs a minimum of £6.90.

A council spokesperson provided the following statement: “The Brandon estate has seen too many outages in recent months and years and we are currently completing a review of options to make the heating system more resilient, affordable and sustainable to discuss with residents, ahead of works beginning, COVID-permitting, later this year.

“We are also developing a new compensation policy, with a view to rolling out a new flat rate compensation rate for each day’s outage, additional to a heat reimbursement sum subtracted from residents’ rents. It’s fundamental that in the event of an unplanned outage no one feels they’ll be without any power supply or support from officers, or in any way out of pocket.”

‘Fifty outages in eighteen months’ after costly upgrades on Estate

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A Brandon Estate leaseholder and TRA chair says he has counted nearly 50 district heating outages in just eighteen months - all after upgrades to the system.

Tom Lloyd, who chairs Brandon 1 TRA, told the News that the Camberwell estate’s heating and hot water service has reached a new low since new, computer-controlled pumps were fitted in 2019 to try and prevent regular outages.

He claims to have counted 49 outages in just eighteen months - compared to a usual around half a dozen outages a year.

He believes the new parts are unreliable due to being more sensitive to water pressure changes.

Southwark Council is now proposing further work - including potentially replacing the pipework - in the hope it can improve reliability. It is a cost he, and other leaseholders, are wary of paying.

He said he felt ‘held to ransom’ by Southwark Council, as disconnecting from the system costs so much money to make it virtually impossible for a homeowner to arrange their own supply. But there are also limited options for clawing back

She believes it is the new district heating system, which saw pipes installed on the flat roof of the block, caused damage to the building and explains why a new roof is now needed after a series of leaks.

The exact scale of the work needed, however, is still unclear despite being scheduled to start within three months.

Her biggest concern is that there does not seem to be anyone in the council advocating for leaseholders and making sure every cost is justified.

“There is even £800 for a new laptop - why are they charging us for new items and not just a proportion of wear and tear?” she asked.

“They even have included costs for a fax machine. Who uses landlines and fax machines nowadays?”

In response to an enquiry from the News, councillor Stephanie Cryan, the new cabinet member for housing, said the predicted cost was an “awful situation for residents to be

in”.

"I know the estimates and bills to leaseholders are often shockingly expensive,” she admitted.

“We do support leaseholders with a range of ways to pay, and try to be frank and honest at point of sale about the responsibilities of being a homeowner and how expensive it can be.

“It is unfortunate that resident leaseholders have to foot the bill for works when they are necessary, but it’s not something we can avoid doing – we have to maintain people’s homes and in this case, after already carrying out works put in a new heating system, a new roof is now required.

“We now also need to include estimates for extra costs as we work safely around COVID-19, with extra security, PPE and cleaning contracts. We will continue to talk to residents about the next steps forward, and they can see where we are with works or costs whenever they wish.”

The cladding scandal continues as Southwark Council looks at smaller blocks under 18 metres

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The scale of fire safety work needing to be undertaken across the borough has been put into sharp focus in a report to Southwark Council’s housing engagement scrutiny commission this month.

According to the latest Building Safety and Cladding report from Tooley Street’s head of engineering, there are nearly 80 blocks under 18 metres high with cladding that could need remediation works.

Currently, government funding only covers cladding removal for blocks over 18m tall, with a loan scheme for leaseholders put in place to pay for removal on lower rise blocks instead.

There are also around 2,300 council buildings under the same height threshold that could require further investigation into fire safety regardless of whether or not they

have cladding.

Around 79 blocks under 18 metres high do have external wall systems - meaning their flats are likely to be unsellable until work has been completed.

The report also highlights that around 30 flat sales in council-owned blocks are currently being held up to the delay in conducting EWS1 reports, conducted by specialists who identify cladding and fire safety work that has been done or is still needed and the cost implications.

The council has also identified around 400 privately owned or managed buildings in the borough that are over 18 metres high and therefore are highly likely to require some level of investigation - but has limited powers to encourage landlords to take action.

The council is now conducting further tests on a number of blocks including drill tests and intrusive surveys into cavity barriers.

Peckham man sentenced to thirteen years for manslaughter

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A drug gang member from Peckham has been found guilty of manslaughter for his role in an attack on a rival in Basingstoke.

Terence Maccabee, from Radnor Road, was sentenced last Tuesday (February 16) for his role in the killing of eighteen-year-old Taylor Williams, from Bromley.

Taylor was found fatally injured with stab wounds in Shooters Way in Basingstoke on Saturday, August 31, 2019.

During the trial at Winchester Crown Court, the jury heard that the victim was involved in a London-based drug gang.

While staying in a flat in a Basingstoke he was attacked by a rival drug gang during an attempted robbery.

Taylor escaped through a window after being knifed and was found by paramedics following a call to emergency services at 10.34pm.

Shortly after, Maccabee was found nearby, also suffering stab wounds.

He was taken to hospital and later arrested.

murder but guilty of manslaughter during a trial in November last year, as well as being found guilty of robbery, conspiracy to rob and possession of a bladed article. He was jailed for thirteen years.

In January, Olamide Soyege, 29, of Mayswood Gardens, Dagenham, was jailed for life with a minimum of 32 years after being convicted of Taylor’s murder and found guilty of robbery and conspiracy to rob at the trial.

Paige Taylor, 24, of St Michael’s Road, Basingstoke, was also jailed. He was handed seven years for robbery and conspiracy to rob.

Survey launched by council to find new home

Southwark Park’s beehives will be removed as “potential repairs” are made to the park’s wildlife area.

The bees have been nesting in the garden by Gomm Road for the last decade or so.

Their hives are surrounded by hanging flowers, Irish bats and painted lady butterflies.

In an email to its members, the Southwark Park Association 1869 said: “Southwark Council has confirmed that the beehives will be removed from the wildlife area of the park.

“The reasons for this decision seem to relate to unspecified "potential repairs and improvements" to the wildlife area.

“An alternative home for the beehives in the park is being offered as a temporary measure, but there is no firm commitment to return the beehives to their well-established location in the wildlife area, or to retain them in the park at all.”

The Association is encouraging people concerned about the decision to share their views via the council’s online survey.

The email continued: “This [decision] is clearly worrying as there has been minimal, if any, public consultation on the issue.

“We will be seeking further information.”

Libby Mewes, 25, was furloughed from her job at the Lyceum Theatre in the West End. With this new-found time on her hands, she decided to get creative and start painting cards.

She told the News: “I like to make cards that shops don’t sell such as ‘Hope your next meeting goes well’ or ‘Good luck with your jab appointment on Tuesday’.

“Lib’s Cards really just started from that.”

Living in Rotherhithe has boosted Libby’s creativity with the surrounding woods providing inspiration for her most popular ‘The Flowers’ collection.

Each card is hand-painted on fully recyclable and compostable material and is entirely unique and personal to the customer.

“I’ve had all sorts of requests from new baby posters, thank you cards for an entire year 6 class and a very fetching little shark. I love the variety and challenge.”

The business has taken off from her bedroom in Rotherhithe and Libby now receives around ten commissions a week.

Feedback on her works have all been positive with one customer describing her card as ‘OMG perfection! You stole what I wanted from mind! That’s really amazing, so so perfect, thank you.’

“People have been so kind and so lovely about my cards,” Libby said humbly.

Horniman’s Museum’s tree planting appeal

High levels of pollution from one of the country’s busiest roads have been affecting the museum’s gardens and its local wildlife at an increasing rate.

The London Road Tree Planting Appeal will develop the existing plant border into a visual barrier that is safe and welcoming for people and wildlife.

Ninety trees will be planted in the 300m2 micro-forest along with a mix of native shrubs, herbaceous plants and 2000 bulbs.

A line of silver birches placed at the front will act as a green screen shield to improve CO2 absorption and reduce noise pollution.

Areas of remaining grass will be left to grow long and return to a meadow.

One of the major champions of the appeal is garden designer and TV

presenter Joe Swift, who said: “The Horniman Gardens have always been a wonderful resource for all of the local community, and this past year has seen them play an even more important role in helping people’s mental health and wellbeing.

“But the Gardens and the wildlife that live there suffer from noise and air pollution at an increasing rate.

“This year, this problem will be tackled, by creating this brilliant barrier from the main road, but we need your help.”

The appeal aims to raise £10,000 in total.

A donation of £60 will go towards planting a silver birch tree that can absorb up to 3,100 kilograms of CO2 over a 20-year period.

Smaller donations of £15 or £30 will keep the woodland border topped-up with layers of vegetation and support as much wildlife as possible.

82-year-old ambulance worker passes away from coronavirus Jamil worked in Bermondsey

By Simon Throssell news@southwarknews.co.uk Tributes have been paid to a “well-liked and respected” 82-year-old ambulance service worker, after his death from coronavirus.

Jamil Ahmed had worked for the London Ambulance Service for almost three decades and was due to celebrate his 30th anniversary in September.

Colleagues described ‘Jim’ as “a very pleasant, well-liked and respected member of the team who wasn’t afraid to get stuck in when the going was tough.”

Mr Ahmed, a trained emergency medical technician, began his career at Camden ambulance station before moving to the nonemergency transport service team in Bermondsey.

He had been a member of the south London team for five years and was supporting their logistics operations during the pandemic.

The Service remembered him in a statement, saying: “Jamil was respected by all at Bermondsey

and by colleagues at New Malden – where he often worked to assist with staffing shortages.

“He would share his experiences with others and his work ethic was impeccable.

“Our thoughts are with Jamil’s wife Neelofor, his children Adil, Shazia and Faisal as well as with all his friends and his colleagues across the Service.”

New testing centre at London Bridge

The testing centre is now open seven days a week from Monday, February 22 at the St Thomas Street exit of London Bridge Station, SE1 9QU. There is also a testing site currently available in Peckham at Damilola Taylor Centre, 1 East Surrey Grove, SE15 6DR. Two charged with Lavaun Witter’s murder

kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Two men have been charged with the murder of 22-year-old Lavaun Witter, from Peckham.

Twenty-year-old Tyreece Riggon, of Armistice Gardens, South Norwood and Julian Russell, 22, of Sanfield Road, Croydon were arrested last Thursday, 18 February.

Riggon and Russell have been remanded in custody and appeared at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Saturday charged with the murder of Lavaun, plus the wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm of a 16-year-old male and possession of a bladed article.

Police were called to a residential address in Wisbeach Road, SE25, at approximately 9.10pm on Friday, 5 February and found Lavaun suffering from a stab injury. Despite the efforts of the emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 16-year-old male was stabbed during the same incident and was taken to hospital, where his injuries were found to be non-life threatening.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the events of that evening.

Two suspected drug dealers from Southwark arrested by police in Canterbury

Two suspected drug dealers from Southwark have been charged after Kent police discovered three mobile phones and thousands of pounds in cash during the search of a car.

At around 7.30pm last Friday week, 12 February, officers on patrol stopped a car which was being driven in Rheims Way, Canterbury. Suspecting the two occupants were involved in the supply of drugs, the officers searched the vehicle and recovered three mobile phones. The driver and her passenger were arrested and more than £2,300 in cash was seized.

Ta-shan Thompson-Campbell, of Reculver Road, Rotherhithe, and Agata Lakatus, of Lucey Way, Bermondsey, were both later charged with being concerned in the supply of heroin, being concerned in the supply of crack cocaine and acquiring criminal property, namely the cash seized.

Mr Thompson-Campbell, aged 33, appeared before Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on Monday 15 February where he was remanded to a hearing at Canterbury Crown Court on 15 March.

Ms Lakatus, aged 23, received conditional bail at Folkestone Magistrates' Court to appear at the same Canterbury Crown Court hearing.

Kids Company: Trustees cleared of any financial wrongdoing in court The Camberwell based charity received £42 million in government fuding between 1996 and 2015

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Kids Company’s founder and trustees were cleared of serious incompetence and financial mismanagement by a judge last week.

The Camberwell charity, set up

by Camilla Batmanghelidjh, went bankrupt in 2015 amid subsequently unfounded allegations of sexual abuse and claims of mismanagement.

The court battle had been brought by the Insolvency Service, which argued the charity’s trustees had allowed it to operate unsustainably.

At the time of its collapse, the charity was criticised for heavy dependency on government grants and lack of financial reserves.

Ms Batmanghelidjh’s methods, and commitment to never turning a child in need away whatever funding and

resources were available, had also been called into question. She always maintained the charity had been attacked for political reasons.

A House of Commons report in 2016 had attributed the collapse to ‘failures of governance’ and highlighted misgivings in the charity’s style of work raised by both staff and beneficiaries.

In court, Mrs Justice Falk refused to bar the trustees, who included former BBC creative director Alan Yentob, from future directorships, and said the charity could have survived had it not been for the now dismissed abuse allegations.

Exonerating Kids Company’s leadership, she said it had not been unreasonable to expect further government funding would have been available long-term. She also praised Ms Batmanghelidjh’s “extraordinary dedication”.

Kids Company received £42 million in government funding between 1996 and 2015. At its peak it claimed to support more than 36,000 children and young people in London, Bristol and Liverpool many of whom were falling through cracks in mainstream services.

the lion’s share of funding but did not represent value for money. Residents had also complained of anti-social behaviour and drug taking on its premises.

As it closed its doors for good, Southwark Council was in emergency talks with the Department for Education to ensure young people who depended on Kids Company for support were not left without, with extra funding channelled into the borough’s safeguarding hub.

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk A New Cross woman, who sent a severed pig’s head to her to ex’s workplace, has been jailed after she pleaded guilty to a number of stalking and harassment charges.

Tia McBean, 23, of Besson Street, was sentenced to fifteen months’ imprisonment for seven counts of breaching a restraining order, one count of racially aggravated damaging property, two counts of stalking, one count of harassment, and one count of sending an offensive or threatening communication at Woolwich Crown Court on last week.

The court heard that in 2018, after a short relationship with the victim had ended, McBean began bombarding him with a campaign of hate.

Between 2018 and 2020, McBean made numerous malicious reports to police against the victim, including falsely accusing him of kidnap and child abuse on more than one occasion.

She would also obsessively call the victim and his partner up to 100 times a day, the court was told, eventually leading to a restraining order being imposed in May

2019.

This court order did not halt McBean’s infatuation with her victim.

The court heard how she continued to find ways of disrupting his life on a daily basis, including pinning notes and photos to his front door and leaving rubbish outside his home address.

Last February, McBean began repeatedly sending takeaway deliveries to the victim’s workplace and home address in an attempt to make contact. On 25 February this culminated in the delivery of a severed pig’s head to the address - opened by one of the victim’s colleagues - who was understandably highly distressed by the incident.

On 7 March last year, McBean was caught on CCTV writing racial abuse on the victim’s property. She was arrested and charged on 11 March 2020.

She was bailed from court and continued to make false reports against the victim until August 2020, whereby she was arrested for witness intimidation relating to the harassment of one of the witnesses from the pigs head incident. She was then remanded in custody.

Detective Constable Vikki Eaton, officer in the case from the Met’s South East Public Protection Unit, said: “McBean subjected the victim in this case to a torrent of hate over a sustained period of time. Her unrelenting fixation with causing him, his family and his friends serious distress highlights that she is a dangerous individual and entirely deserving of her sentence.

“Adding to that, the procession of false allegations made to police has not been an easy feat for officers investigating this case.

She has shown a blatant disregard for police time and of the law in general."

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk June 21, 2021 is likely to be a date few of us will forget in future years, after Boris Johnson announced it could mark the end of all current COVID-19 restrictions if infections and hospitalisations continue to fall.

The so-called ‘independence day’ will come after the phased return of schools on March 8 - the first step in the Prime Minister’s ‘roadmap’ out of lockdown.

The government says students’ return is timed with all four top priority groups receiving their vaccinations.

From the same date, wraparound childcare will also return for those who need to return to work or education, seek medical care or attend a support group. A key change in care home policy will allow one regular visitor as long as they wear PPE. People will still be told to stay at home, but they will be allowed to meet with one other person or their support bubble, outside, for a coffee or picnic.

March 29 will see outdoor gatherings of six people or two households allowed again, including in private gardens, and outdoor sports.

Hairdressers, swimming pools and gyms will open from April 12, and pubs and restaurants but only for outdoor service.

Larger events will be allowed from May 17 onward, with all limits removed by June 21, when it is hoped nightclubs will be back and all limits on social contact lifted. All of these steps are subject to be pushed back if the R number, and number of new cases and impact of the variant, mutated viruses cause alarm.

Should late night levy be kept or scrapped?

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council is reviewing whether to keep or scrap the late night levy, but charges for this year are still owed despite COVID-19 enforced closures.

A decision on the future of the tax on the night time economy is expected to be made by the council’s assembly by the end of the financial year, after recommendations from the licensing committee.

Introduced in 2019, 30 per cent of revenue generated from the levy goes toward the council’s work, with 70 per cent funding the police.

Any decisions would only take effect for the next levy period - from August 31, 2021, and not cover owed payments for the last year.

Around 80 businesses have amended their trading hours to avoid paying the levy and due to COVID-19, with

questions over how many can afford to return to their previous licences.

However, officers are concerned a huge burst in socialising and return to normal life could leave policing teams overstretched, and with residents facing a surge in anti-social behaviour throughout the summer.

The question of whether it is fair to ask businesses to cough up cash given the sheer number of permanent closures, redundancies and dependency on the furlough scheme is one councillors will have to consider.

As the report notes, “levy payments come from business profit, which is currently lacking. Businesses will need to spend to recover and recoup recent losses.

“The levy payment could be a deciding factor as to whether or not to reopen and thus could hamper recovery.”

A total of £316,999 was received for 2019/2020, with montly income dropping to just over a thousand in March during the lockdown.

Boris Johnson announced on Monday evening that pubs and restaurants can open for outdoor purposes only from 12th April.

Clement Ogbonnaya, owner of the Prince of Peckham, said that it was ‘nice to know where everyone stands’ but hoped that the roadmap was ‘not one that is too soon’.

Mr Ogbonnaya has retained all eighteen of his furloughed staff at the pub on Clayton Road; a scheme that has been a ‘massive help’ in keeping the business going.

He has also benefited from positive relationships with the landlords and has been able to negotiate concessions on rent.

When asked what support he thought he would need ahead of reopening, Clement said: “I don’t need much support other than let us get open and let us maximise our new opportunities.

“I feel like I have been well supported throughout all of this which might be a different experience to other places.

“The government could be a bit more relaxed with licensing measures and temporary event notices but right now, I just want to get cracking.”

And what will Clement’s first drink back be?

“The old Pat Butcher! A gin and tonic,” He said laughing.

Bermondsey boozer on roadmap: ‘It’s disgusting’

Landlady of The Ancient Foresters, Sandra Smith, criticised the announcement saying: “It’s all very ridiculous.’”

Pubs will be able to open outdoors only from 12th April with indoor dining being allowed from 17th May. Sandra said: “What happens when it starts raining? Do you just leave your drink and run away? How

about when you need the toilet? Can you come inside then?

“We’ve got sanitisers and we wear our masks so why can’t we open now?”

Even though the pub has been shut for half a year, they’ve still had to cover their regular expenses including VAT demands.

“Hopefully we will open up quicker because the only bit of community life round here is at the pub.

“A lot of places won’t be able to open again which is sad.

“Once Millwall comes back and we have people drinking together, I’ll be happy.”

East Dulwich hairdresser has mixed emotions: ‘We’ll be reopening to a pile of bills on the doormat’

Matt Rowden was ‘pleasantly surprised’ at first by the Prime Minister’s announcement, thinking he would have to wait until June to reopen.

But Matt has mixed feelings about coming back, especially after the ‘awful Tier 4 lockdown’ announcements a week before Christmas.

He said: “Our busiest week of the year was taken away from us within a couple of hour’s notice.

“We missed out on a fortune and it destroyed our Christmas.”

Despite being closed, Matt was still required to pay VAT demands on top of his usual expenses.

When he returns, there will also be extra VAT payments that were

deferred under the VAT Payment Deferral Scheme.

“I can’t understand why we’re being asked to pay when we are locked down and obviously can’t do business.

“Nearly 5000 salons have already shut because they can’t afford to reopen in April which is a real shame… VAT for the hospitality sector needs to be cut down.”

The salon applied for a grant from Southwark Council but had to wait seven weeks for a response.

Matt was able to furlough all 12 of his stylists but is now concerned about what is in store for the future.

“The thought of coming back with outstanding bills builds an awful emotional picture.

“I’m afraid that we’ll have to start out almost like a new business.

“There will be a huge surge initially while we clear out our backlog of customers but unless the government does more for our industry… I don’t know...”

The number of daily new COVID-19 infections in Southwark has fallen to levels not seen since early October.

As we reported last week, infection rates in the borough tumbled by more than 50 per cent as the results of the latest lockdown and first tranche of vaccinations bore fruit.

On Monday, Southwark’s rate of infection was 64.9; making it one of ten boroughs in London to see case rates drop below 70.

In the seven days up to Monday the borough had posted 207 new cases, a drop of over a third compared to the previous work.

Twenty-three lab-confirmed COVID-19 infections were identified on Tuesday (February 23), down from a record high of 698 on December 29.

The decline is a trend across London, which had been one of the worst affected cities in the second wave.

Promising new peer-reviewed research has also highlighted the success of the vaccination programme in reducing hospitalisations.

Early data suggest the risk of admission is reduced by 85 to 90 per cent after being given Astra Zeneca and Pfizer jabs respectively, with a combined reduction in risk of 80 per cent for people over the age of 80 after just one dose.

As the News has previously reported, Tooley Street now has a funding gap of £23.6 million after scrambling to provide vital services during the pandemic whilst receiving even less in funding from central government.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Calls from irate residents and opposition councillors for Cllr Leo Pollak to resign as a councillor have so far been batted away by Southwark Labour’s leadership.

Last week it emerged that Cllr Pollak set up a Twitter account that argued with residents over Southwark Council housing schemes. He resigned from the Cabinet, but has stayed on as a ward councillor.

Lib Dem leader Nick Johnson has described Pollak’s position as ‘untenable’, with fellow group councillors Anood Al-Samerai blasting the account as a ‘propaganda machine’, and Humaira Ali saying she was ‘livid’. The Green Party’s former election candidate Claire Sheppard said the situation was ‘appalling’ and argued Pollak should also step down as a councillor.

This week Labour leader Kieron Williams gave no indication that Cllr Pollak would be asked to step down as a councillor, telling the News: “The mistake made by Cllr Pollak has rightly led to him apologising to all those affected and resigning from his cabinet role. Whilst he primarily used this Twitter account to champion the building of new council

homes, I am sorry to say that at times he went about that in a way that did not meet the high standards I expect of everyone in my cabinet; that is why I accepted his resignation as cabinet member for housing.

“It is a decision I made with a heavy heart, as I know his work delivering new and better council homes has transformed thousands of lives for the better. Having spoken to him at length, I know he is deeply and genuinely sorry for that mistake.

“I hope he will learn the lessons from this serious error as he continues to work hard to serve the residents in his ward.”

Lewis Shaffer, from the Save Priory Court campaign - who was dismissed by the ‘SouthwarkYIMBY’ account as a ‘serial blusterer’ said he believed Cllr Pollak should resign and called the council to pause the ‘infill’ plans that had ignited the war of words in the first place.

Although there is huge support for new council housing across the borough, the campaigner believes ultimately tenants will lose out the most through overdevelopment and higher density housing - in an already overcrowded borough and describes the schemes as an ‘overreaction’ to historic failings in estate redevelopments like the Heygate.

“Our main goal is to make people realise that infilling on council estates increases density and reduces amenities for estate residents.

“In Priory Court they want to build

the pandemic by investing £400k into a New Youth Deal, including £200k on expanding The Nest mental health service to schools and £100k on a Youth Parliament to give young people oversight of the services that affect them.

“This specific funding is on top of our £4m capital investment in youth and play – with £3m going to play services and £1m to services for young people.”

In other huge news, £101 million will be invested into climate change action - see our feature on page 6, while the growing number of people in dire financial need will benefit from £500,000 channelled into food poverty programmes and projects that “bridge the wealth divide”.

What opposition Lib Dems say about the budget Key Liberal Democrat demands for the council include focusing on cladding issues, Brexit, and the creation of a ‘tourist tax’ that could generate £600,000 for community projects and affordable technology for people struggling with costs in its first year.

The party has proposed allocating the £2million currently sitting in a Brexit reserves fund towards hands on support for EU residents who need help with citizenship applications or are key workers or on low incomes, including one-off financial grants.

Mental health, young people, and pandemic recovery are the council’s key priorities. In advance of the vote, Cllr Rebecca Lury, cabinet member for finance, business and jobs, said: “Our young people have been the least affected by the COVID-19 virus itself, but the most affected by lockdown and the disruption to their education, their social groups and the plans they have for the future. It is imperative that we support them through the next challenges ahead.

“We are making sure no young person is left behind during and after

nine new homes, a small part of what is actually needed and there is land available elsewhere to do that.

“It’s just that building on council owned land already is seemingly easy.

“He argued that I don’t have support but 47 out of 72 flats signed our petition.”

Cllr Pollak resigned and referred himself to the council’s monitoring officer over the Twitter account last week.

In an unequivocal public apology, he said he would accept whatever recommendations were made after an investigation.

The News attempted to contact Cllr Pollak this week, to ask whether he intended to resign as a ward councillor.

*Stephanie Cryan has taken on the role of housing cabinet member on a temporary basis.

It is understood Cllr Cryan, who had previously held the housing portfolio before a reshuffle into the jobs and skills post, will take over the majority of the workload with support from her colleagues until a permanent replacement is selected.

Councillor Humaira Ali and Councillor David Noakes have called for a ‘Southwark People’s Healthy Recovery’, including free outdoor group fitness classes across parks in the borough throughout the warmer months; extra grants for local charities to offer affordable or free talking therapies, free one-year subscriptions to medication apps for lower income residents, and improved health resources. The Lib Dems say £780, 000 could be allocated for this work from London Devolution Fund reserves.

The party has also called for in-house council magazine Southwark Life to be replaced with an outsourced newsletter

and Tooley Street’s communications team to be cut, saving £78,000 and £280,000 respectively. Cllr Damian O’Brien says this could be channelled into a new Centre of Excellence for private, shared ownership and housing association residents’ associations in Southwark which would offer support and legal advice.

They are also calling on the council urgently to hire a team of qualified surveyors to push forward investigations, repairs and support for residents - whether council leaseholders or otherwise - caught up in the cladding scandal - regardless of building height.

New homes to go ahead on St Saviour's Estate

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Plans for 40 new council homes and three new play areas in St Saviour’s Estate have been greenlit by Southwark Council’s planning committee.

Sixteen of the new homes are replacing garages in Fendall Street with the remaining 24 built on former garages and a car park in Maltby Street.

At least eight of the homes on Fendall Street and all 24 homes on Maltby Street will first be offered to local council tenants who need to move because their existing home is unsuitable for them and their family.

The remaining homes on Fendall Street will be let to other households in housing need in Southwark.

Southwark Council says its garages team is looking for alternative storage for people who were using garages as

storage.

There will also be parking spaces allocated for wheelchair accessible flats.

Council Leader Kieron Williams said: “I’m delighted planning has been approved for these two beautiful spacious new developments which will provide much-needed new council homes for people in the area, whilst also enhancing the communal spaces on St Saviours’ estate.

"I want to thank all the local residents who’ve been so integral to the designs, and look forward to seeing local people moving into their new homes.”

The new developments, designed by architects Bells Phillips, will be fivestorey buildings made up of flats and duplexes, ranging from one-bedroom to four-bedroom properties.

Work is scheduled to begin on site this summer, and be completed in winter 2022.

Community Southwark gets £16k grant from the National Grid Community Southwark has been awarded over £16,000 of funding towards a Support Officer for the local BAME community.

The organisation is the charity umbrella body for Southwark’s voluntary and community sector, providing support to more than 1000 local not-for-profit organisations.

They have been awarded £16,747 as part of the National Grid’s Community Grant Programme.

The grant will fund a dedicated Voluntary Council Service (VCS) Support Officer to empower Southwark’s growing BAME communities.

They will advise community groups on development, sustainability and financial matters.

The Support Officer will also lead the newly formed BAME network lobbying for changes to inequality across the borough and beyond to ensure minority voices are heard.

Director of Community Southwark, Krzysztof Mikata-Pralat, commented: "We are very grateful for the generous support we received from National Grid.

Hazel Broadfoot, who has been the owner of Village Books since 1996, said she is 'very thrilled and very excited’ to have been shortlisted for the award.

“The joy of bookselling is the conversations and interactions you have with customers,” Hazel said.

“Lots of parents and children have rung me up asking for recommendations which I am more than happy to do.”

After problems with the shop’s wholesaler, Hazel was forced to transform the business.

Book orders were taken by email and delivered to families in the area by car, bike and on foot.

“When the lockdown was announced, it felt like the world was collapsing around me but you have to get used to it and do what you have to do.”

“We’ll be pleased to re-open so we can hold author events again.

“We were able to run virtual events with children’s author Andy Griffiths and the BBC’s North America editor Jon Sopel but it’s never quite the same as enjoying books in person.”

This is not the first time Village Books has been shortlisted for this award, even being named overall winner back in 2000.

“I would love to win again,” Hazel said humbly.

“Independent booksellers have been so nimble-footed during the pandemic and it’s lovely to see that being recognised on the shortlist.”

Community Southwark was particularly important to them given its close proximity to the London Power Tunnels; a £1bn project rewiring the electricity network between Wimbledon and Crayford.

The project is also working in partnership with MyKindaFuture to deliver a STEM careers outreach programme to secondary pupils along the South London route.

Peckham care home residents show age is just a number Care home residents in Peckham have been getting creative with arts and crafts to keep their spirits up during the lockdown.

Elderly residents at Waterside Care Home on Sumner Road are proving that age is just a number by painting watercolours, playing cards and even dancing to the Macarena.

The activities have been a great way for residents to spend time while locked down.

Residents have also been introduced to modern technology as staff have shown them the 'magic' of Snapchat filters.

Staff and residents decorated pancakes with Nutella, honey and marshmallows on Shrove Tuesday.

On Valentines Day, they sent each other cards with hand-painted love hearts on the front.

Residents have also been drawing bright yellow and green daffodils to celebrate the coming of spring.

Peckham Cyclists Climb Everest Seven Times For Charity

Peckham Cycle Club has raised thousands of pounds for charity by climbing the equivalent of almost seven Everests.

As reported in last week’s News, members had just 48 hours to ride the 8,848.86m height of Mount Everest together.

The club also set itself the goal of raising £1000 for Pecan, hosts of the Southwark Foodbank.

Totting up the results on Monday, committee member Liz said: “We are really proud to announce that Peckham Cycle Club collectively climbed 68,237m or roughly 7.7 Everests!”

With temperatures reaching 16 degrees over the weekend, it was perfect weather for the challenge.

Sixty-five riders took part in total with some doing it virtually on Zwift and others heading out across south London to cycle their contribution.

“It was great to see so many people out representing the club with their bright kit.

“A special shoutout must go to the man of the moment Ben Mort who completed 63 repetitions of Crooms Hill in Greenwich, totalling 2385m in elevation alone.”

As well as completing the Everesting challenge, the club also beat their fundraising goal by raising a whopping £2,729 for Pecan; almost £2000 more than their initial target.

All money raised will support the vital work the Peckham-based charity is doing to tackle food insecurity in the local community.

Members of the committee are now putting in plans for a safe return to group riding, after the Prime Minister’s lockdown roadmap announcement on Monday evening.

Africa Centre launches new cultural education campaign

Over £100,000 raised for school laptops A campaign to get laptops and broadband to every child in need in Southwark has raised over £100,000.

The fundraiser, set up by Southwark Council and London South Teaching School Alliance in January aimed to bridge the ‘digital divide’ for children homeschooled until March and those self-isolating due to being exposed to the virus.

The first laptops were delivered throughout February to schools including Camberwell’s Camelot Primary and St George’s Cathedral Catholic Primary in Westminster Bridge Road. More than 2,500 children are now set to benefit from the added support.

and schools, had told the News the council would match fund up to £250,000 from its emergency COVID-19 funding, and was also working with partners to take long-term action that would help families access affordable WiFi and technology.

By the beginning of this week, more than a thousand people had backed the appeal, with £102,156 raised so far.

The Africa Centre has launched a new campaign focused on educating people through African art and culture.

Based in Southwark, the centre runs exciting workshops celebrating the richness and diversity of African cultures.

Since the 1960s, the centre has been using the power of music, art and literature to broaden the horizons of young people across the capital.

Last year, they called in renowned Mbira player Gabriel ‘Sekuru’ Makamanzi to teach students at Borough Academy about the traditional Mbira instrument from Zimbabwe.

Studies show that cultural

appreciation and awareness positively influences young people’s self-esteem; something that will act as the backdrop for the centre’s exciting new campaign.

Run in partnership with the Aviva Community Fund Project, the ‘Education through Culture’ campaign will focus on acceptance, belonging and bringing young people together.

Funds are crowdfunded online with all money raised enabling the centre to run similar workshops in more schools across London.

O ur wholehearted praise should go to the NHS workers and volunteers across south east London who have worked tirelessly to vaccinate more than 324,000 residents in the four priority groups, before the deadline which fell on Valentine’s Day.

The government has recently extended the evictions ban once again, this time until the end of March. But this constant stop and start approach is just kicking the can down the road and we need a longer-term ban put in place, at least until Ministers find a solution which prevents potentially thousands of Londoners from being kicked out of their homes in the spring.

I am backing the Mayor’s calls for the government to provide grants to support tenants to clear their rent arrears, to finally ban section 21 or ‘no-fault’ evictions and to increase Local Housing Allowance to cover average rents in an area.

With a third of the homes in the borough being privately rented, Southwark Council is now consulting on renewing and expanding its landlord licensing scheme to improve living conditions for its tenants. With renters spending most of their time at home during lockdown, this comes at a crucial time and I would urge local people to make their views on the consultation known via the council’s website.

ocal politics in Southwark took a surreal turn last week.

Labour councillor and cabinet member for housing, Leo Pollak was revealed to have created a fake twitter account, pretending to be a local resident, and using it against residents who dared to disagree with his housing plans.

Perhaps he was feeling the pressure as Southwark has just missed its target for new council homes this year.

Elected politicians are there to serve all residents, not just those who support them. So it is right that he stepped down from his cabinet post. He should also step down as a councillor for South Bermondsey, as I cannot see how he can hope to keep the trust of the residents who elected him and trusted him.

I highlighted in my column last month the failure to deliver council homes. It is a fact that Southwark has seen a net loss of 2,000 council homes since the start of 2010 - despite a promise by Labour to deliver a 2,500 increase by 2022. This is a property clearance not a building programme. They didn’t just sell them

off to leaseholders, they demolished them and sold the land to private developers. Less than 100 per year have been completed since. Although they say they’ve started 1,500 or so more, at this rate who has time to wait another decade to get back what we’ve lost? Certainly not the 15,000 families on the waiting list. We need a better and bolder plan if we are to get people into new homes faster. As I said last month, expect to hear more on this from us later in the year.

Which brings me to finances. It is annual budget time at the council and this week we are setting out our challenges on spending priorities. Firstly, I want to commend council officers, who have worked tirelessly to secure extra funding from central government.

Their success means that vital frontline services won’t have to be cut.

Although there are many things we would like to do if we ran the whole council –we’ve focused on the following four areas as urgent priorities to help residents: • Going greener faster in Southwark - Accelerating climate action with

green roof programmes, committing to stop using fossil fuels for vehicles and energy across council estates and encourage air quality improvement to stop the dither and delay on saving the one planet we have.

• Becoming a more inclusive Southwark by helping the thousands of children and adults with no digital access obtain laptops and training for a better future • Boosting mental health support for residents given the impact of successive lockdowns of the pandemic • Encouraging safer houses for all by more direct help from the council to private residents and residents of housing associations in ending the cladding and snagging crisis created by developers and freeholders Please get in touch if you want to learn more about the above and what an alternative plan for Southwark might start to look like.

In the meantime, I know it’s tough out there but stay safe; don’t go to any illicit warehouse raves and hang on in there, it will end… eventually.

It is a remarkable achievement that everyone in those groups has now been offered their first dose. As the roll-out continues, I would urge all Londoners to get their jabs as soon as they are offered it by the NHS. Despite this progress, one of the major obstacles remaining in the path of the national programme is vaccine hesitancy. This is an issue which is particularly prevalent amongst Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities for a range of reasons. Cash-strapped local authorities have really stepped up to respond to the pandemic, and have a huge part to play in pushing out multi-lingual and targeted messaging to reassure their communities that the vaccine is safe and effective.

This is why I was disappointed when, alongside 25 other London boroughs,

Southwark Council did not receive any funding from the government’s recent COVID-19 Community Champions grant to support this work. We are still waiting for answers from ministers on why this has been the case.

As we emerge from the dark winter months, we will still face challenging times ahead, but there is help available for those who need it.

Looking towards the eventual reopening of our capital, it is vital that we boost walking and cycling infrastructure to avoid a car-led recovery. In this vein, TfL are proposing to upgrade more sections of Cycle Superhighway 7. It is one of the most heavily used routes into central London, with the latest figures suggesting that over 8,000 people per day cycle on the section

This is the one massive drawback they never mention when promoting the right to buy scheme. Most people that buy their council flats will almost certainly be liable for tens of thousands to pay in maintenance costs as council blocks tend to be poorly maintained in general.

As for that £2,500 service charge, two words - RIP OFF.

Enchanting new British musical ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’, exploring the extraordinary world of a sorcerer and his rebellious daughter, as she discovers the explosive possibilities of her newfound magical powers, is moving its world premiere from Southwark Playhouse to the streaming platform stream.theatre.

Producer James Seabright said: “We are sorry not to be able to present this wonderful new show to audiences as planned at Southwark Playhouse, but we are going to film it in the venue next week with broadcast quality cameras and then premiere it online.

I commissioned it five years ago, and have loved developing it since then through a series of workshops and a West End concert presentation of an earlier version in 2017, which led to the invitation from Southwark Playhouse to premiere the show at their venue this month. I decided to press ahead with these plans with rehearsals up to Christmas and fit up and get-in since New Year despite the challenges presented by doing so during the COVID-19 pandemic, as I think this magical story of

renewal and the importance of family is especially timely. However, the latest national lockdown leaves us with a show ready to perform which we are unable to share with live audiences. I have been inspired by the determination and resolve of our cast, creative team to make this possible whilst maintaining the highest safety standards for everyone on and off

Peter Barnes was considered a giant of British theatre in the late 60s and early 70s, famed for his dramas that embraced tragedy, comedy and farce, but he was also known for smaller scale radio pieces.

Barnes’ People was a series of short monologues broadcast in the 80s that have now been resurrected for stage by contemporary giants of the British theatre, writes Michael Holland.

In these four pieces you can find anger and compassion, dark humour and sadness, poignancy and wit, all performed with simple sets and green screen.

In Losing Myself, Adams (Matthew Kelly) sits in the cemetery that he visits almost daily to talk to the gravestone of a man he never knew about loneliness and the developers who want to build on the land, and also to seek redemption for what he sees as his past sins.

But the gloriously bitchy comments from this gossipmonger are pure joy: ‘So seedy it was sprouting!’ Was just one gem that had me smiling. But it became obvious that this was a rather inconsequential man believing he was important when no one else did. The underlying narrative was, once again, the sadness of some people’s lives. ‘Drinking is still the biggest occupational hazard of working at the Palace’, he reveals with a look that conveys a deep problem.

Mike Jennings (Jon Culshaw) performs his hackneyed ventriloquist turn to a crowd that have seen it all before in Billy And Me, and after the show, sitting amongst his wooden ‘friends’, he has a more meaningful conversation about his depression and how life has not been kind to him. These problems that affect all of us at one time or another do not change, so seeing these radio monologues brought to life again on stage do not seem dated.

Barnes’ People holds a mirror up to many people’s lives, and that makes it good theatre. Shy away from it if you will, but I suggest you venture in.

(TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) 1.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable works to be carried out by SGN and Horizon Construction, it made, an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named road.

2.

Whilst the works are in progress, or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in:

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

2. The effect of the orders is to reintroduce all static parking, waiting, loading and stopping restrictions borough-wide into a map-based format, with no material change to any of the operational specifications or dimensions of those restrictions.

By Ben Henderson sport@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET’S Danny Mills led from the front both on and off the pitch in February, as he organised a mental health campaign with the support of the club and Whitehawk FC, his former team.

With Mills at the helm, the two clubs hosted a series of virtual events as part of the ‘Shout Out for Mental Health’ campaign, through which they hope to raise £2,500 for the charity MIND. “It started with a throwaway comment on a podcast I was doing for Whitehawk,” Mills explained to the News.

“At the end I said, ‘maybe there’s more I can do to help people during the lockdown’. So I put my head down and thought about how I could drive a campaign.”

Mills approached the clubs and played a major role in organising the events.

“This has been such a hard year for everyone,” he said. “People’s mental health has taken a knock in one way or another. People have lost jobs, been furloughed and lost loved ones.

“This campaign is to let them know help is out there and they are not alone. It’s here to let people know that they should check in with their friends and family to make sure they’re okay and if they’re not then help is here.”

Mills also reflected on mental health among footballers. “Being in football for a number of years, I have seen the effects football has on players’ mental health.

“The anxiety of not knowing whether you’re going to start a game, waiting to know if you’re going to make the bench.

The fear of making mistakes during a game. This campaign has been inspired by seeing these struggles and I want to help raise awareness for those who may not realise it’s happening.

Danny Mills “Fans and the media only see a fraction of players’ lives. We’re more than just footballers, we’ve got hearts and families, too. Being a footballer can bring money and fame so people have no sympathy for the players, but that’s not how it should work.”

Mills has experienced many dressing rooms over a career that’s taken him to fourteen clubs. He said the attitudes of coaching staff hasn’t always helped.

“Managers can be quite archaic, constantly telling players to man-up, I’ve seen managers completely lose their heads with individual players and single them out.

“You can see it affects the players, they’re hiding on the pitch, because of that fear of

making another mistake and what that would bring.

“I don’t necessarily blame the managers – that approach is all they’ve ever known.

But some of them need to evolve in the way they man-manage players.”

When asked how Dulwich manager Gavin Rose treats his players, Mills chuckled: “Gav’s done really well in the way he nurtures players from the academy. He helps us a lot. He has his own way of doing things.”

Mills’ sentiments were reflected by former players who spoke at one of the virtual events on Sunday, February 21.

Sergio Torres – who made over 200 appearances in the Football League – spoke about the anxiety he suffered when

he fell out of favour as a player and was forced to train with the youth team.

He was so low he nearly returned to his native Argentina. Eventually he got help from a psychiatrist and went on to achieve hero status at Crawley Town and Whitehawk.

The Billericay Town forward, Jake Robison, also spoke about the loneliness that football can bring. When things weren’t going well for him at Shrewsbury Town, Robinson would take any opportunity he could to drive home to Brighten – even for just a day – to escape the atmosphere and switch off.

As well as the virtual event, the campaign appeared on Whitehawk’s own TV show, and included a Dulwich versus

Whitehawk legends game simulated on Twitter – featuring a Dulwich frontline of Edgar Kail and Peter Crouch that must have left even the most hardened supporters glassy-eyed.

There was also a radio show and a fans’ quiz night. A Hamlet insider ruefully confirmed that Whitehawk’s quiz team “wiped the floor” with the Dulwich faithful.

This is the first time two non-league clubs have partnered for a charitable campaign. Rob Hyneman, the head of Dulwich’s community work, said: “We’re not going to solve all the problems with mental health in the local area, but this campaign hopefully gives people some respite in difficult times. It’s about bringing people together to give them a release.”

Hyneman was eager to emphasise Mill’s importance in driving the campaign. “He’s really stepped up,” he said. “This is how community clubs should be run – with the players driving community outreach forward. Danny’s thrown himself into life in Dulwich and set an example for other footballers to follow in terms of engaging with the fanbase.”

Mills agreed about the significance of players taking the lead. “The key with all these initiatives is to get the players involved. Fans want to get to know the players. When they’re on the pitch they feel a mile away, but when they’re accessible it has a massive impact.”

The Hamlet striker made it clear that his drive to support mental health will not stop here. “My aim now is to work with organisations like the PFA and the FA to improve the situation. We need more current or ex-players in these roles because only the players know what it’s really like.”

Mills even suggested he may write a book about his experiences one day.

“As players we have much more to offer.”

Dulwich Hamlet season over after vote

Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET’S 2020-21 season is over after National League South was declared null and void following a majority outcome after votes by clubs in the sixth tier.

More National League South clubs voted to continue the season (12-9) but the vote to end their campaign was carried by a majority of National League North clubs (15-7) meaning more than the required minimum 51 per cent overall majority was reached.

The National League passed with a majority to continue their season (7-13) but it remains to be seen what route the seven clubs that voted to end it will take.

It brings to an end the latest tumultuous period in the history of

the Hamlet, who had said they wanted to fulfil their remaining fixtures this season but wouldn’t risk plunging the club into debt by incurring costs to play games with no gate income. They also highlighted the risk of players and staff contracting Covid-19.

The club risked punishments which could have included fines, a points deduction or even expulsion and they were charged by the National League after they didn’t fulfill recent fixtures.

Chairman Ben Clasper outlined the situation in the News earlier this month.

“Almost every other club supports the stance [to end the season], but a tiny minority will quite happily beat everyone up and bankrupt people by forcing them all to play.

“In the middle you’ve got clubs that have the means to continue but don’t want to see damage to others, and

Dulwich Hamlet are in the boat of we want to carry on but we can’t. If we do, we’ll get into debt, and the league’s rules state that if you have insufficient funds to finish a season, they can expel you. We’re already in that position.

“There’s no way we can comply with the league’s Catch-22, so the only rule we’re going to abide by is to protect the long-term future of the football club.”

Hamlet boss Gavin Rose had fully backed the board’s stance. “It was a joint decision,” he told the News. “[Hamlet chairman] Ben [Clasper] had asked me my position on it and we were all of the same mindset that we don’t want to ask the players to play football without being able to give them their wages, something that I’m very staunch about, as they’re putting themselves at risk with the virus and injury.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett admitted it’s a “horrible feeling” leaving players out of the team when they have worked so hard to deserve their place in the side.

Rowett was speaking about skipper Alex Pearce and striker Matt Smith, both of whom could now be set for more regular runs in the side after injuries to Jake Cooper and Kenneth Zohore.

Pearce, 32, started his first league game since January 16 when he replaced Cooper in the line-up in the 0-0 draw against Wycombe Wanderers last Saturday.

Smith, 31, has shown how effective he is but he has been used mostly off the bench by Rowett. Smith started consecutive league games last weekend for the first time since last November.

Both players are out of contract this summer and are desperate for gametime to prove they deserve new deals.

Rowett praised the players for their attitudes despite their lack of action this season.

“When players haven’t played as much as they would have liked, and Pearcey and Smudge come into that category, I’m sure both of them were stat there desperate to start,” Rowett said.

“I’ve said it before, all you can do is make sure you’re ready when you get the opportunity. If I give them the opportunity or not, for any player that’s not their fault.

“I pick the team on what I think is right.

It doesn’t make anyone a bad player or not right for the club long-term, it just means it’s difficult for them to play.

“What the players have to do is make sure they’re in a position to come in and

affect the game. They’ve certainly both done that and I’m really pleased about that, that’s a huge feather in the cap of how professional they are and how important to the group they are.

“Sometimes when players aren’t playing as much it’s a horrible feeling for a manager because you want them to feel some form of value from working so hard in the week.

“For those two players in the last couple of games in different ways

they’ve been able to do that.”

Rowett is pleased with how his squad reacted after a run of ten league games without a win from October to December threatened to drag them into a relegation scrap.

After just one win in fifteen Championship games, Rowett admitted that he did glance nervously down the table for the first time in his spell in charge.

“There was one game where we

weren’t winning and Rotherham were winning their game and I think at that point as the table stood we were four points off the bottom three,” Rowett said.

“So of course it goes through your mind that this is not an ideal situation compared to the start of the season and what we wanted to achieve.

“But the games didn’t stay like that and we ended up with more points and then went on a run.

“At one point we just started to get

dragged into something we didn’t want.

What we’ve tried to do since we came in is look up the table and be positive and see if we can finish as high as we can.

“That was probably the first part of my tenure when I looked over my shoulder a little bit nervously. But thankfully we kicked on a little bit and certainly we’re in a much healthier position as we stand now.

“The expectation is to try to move forward a little bit more positively.”

By Alex Grace at The Den sport@southwarknews.co.uk IT’S OFTEN been said this season, but if Millwall had managed as many wins at home as they’ve done away they would be firmly in the promotion mix.

Not often will you hear it said that Millwall are preferring playing away from The Den, rather than at it.

The Lions’ home record in the league this season is three wins, ten draws and three defeats. That’s a total of nineteen points from a possible 48. Away from home it’s a completely different story, six league wins before Tuesday’s trip to Luton.

Mason Bennett’s frustrations summed up Millwall’s afternoon last Saturday For whatever reason, the Lions have found it a lot easier to win away from The Den since football returned back in June.

One obvious issue is of course no fans, compared to playing on the front foot roared on by a hostile crowd.

The victory over Birmingham on February 17 was not pretty but the early goal settled things down and Millwall must do that against these sides who are

battling at the bottom. Just find a way to win.

Wycombe arrived with a clear intent of leaving with a point. They sat in deep and ensured it wouldn’t be easy to break them down.

The Lions had a total of 67 per cent possession against the league’s bottom club but could not turn it into anything meaningful.

Chairboys goalkeeper David Stockdale denied both Mahlon Romeo and Jed Wallace with a superb double-save in the first half.

Wycombe mustered little before the break, Daryl Horgan getting a shot away from outside the box but it was comfortable for Bart Bialkowski.

Scott Malone threatened for the hosts in the second half after Mason Bennett’s clever pass, but Stockdale tipped over the left wing-back’s fierce rising drive.

Both sides had penalty appeals. Bennett appeared to be fouled in the box but got nothing.

Wycombe’s looked more clear-cut in the 69th minute. It was former Lion Fred Onyedinma who burst into the box muscling his way past Alex Pearce. The Lions captain seemed to drag down the attacker, but again play went on.

The point did little for either side.

Millwall did move one point closer to sixth before the midweek games, but Wycombe are in danger of having their immediate relegation confirmed with games to go.

Critics will say Gary Rowett’s decision

to start and stick with a back three was too negative, but no one quite knew how much danger Uche Ikpeazu would pose.

George Evans, who had switched to the left side of the defence, handled his threat well.

Much has been made of Millwall’s failure to bring in attacking players during the January window but Evans is turning out to be a shrewd recruit. He has slotted in well after making his debut in the 4-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday at the start of the month.

Millwall now just need to avoid more injuries to keep it interesting in the top half heading into the last quarter of the campaign.

sport@southwarknews.co.uk IT LOOKED as though Millwall would be heading back to London with nothing on Tuesday night until George Evans rose highest in the fifth minute of injury-time to plant a superb header past Simon Sluga which earned the Lions a point in their 1-1 draw with Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.

Millwall didn’t play particularly well against the Hatters but still had some good chances. The visitors had trailed for the majority of the second half after Elijah Adebayo’s opener on his first Championship start.

Gary Rowett’s side lacked composure on the ball and struggled to support the forward players for much of the game, leaving them isolated against a Luton back three who defended resolutely for most of the night.

Sonny Bradley was dominant in the air against Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Tom Bradshaw, and Martin Cranie and Brad Potts also dealt with everything that came their way, almost until the final whistle.

Bodvarsson and Bradshaw didn’t work too well as a front two with Jed Wallace behind them. The 5-32 system deployed by Rowett lacks natural width in attack and with Luton’s speed in transition, Scott

Malone and Mahlon Romeo weren’t able to get as far forward as often or they risked leaving the back three more exposed to counter-attacks.

Rowett switched to 4-4-2 after an hour, and it eventually paid off.

Millwall had struggled to find a balance between attack and defence.

Despite having Ryan Woods screening in front of his back three, Romeo and Malone just couldn’t get high enough up the pitch to link with the attackers.

Romeo, particularly, was wasteful on the ball in the first half and gave possession away cheaply on a number of occasions. Too often he turned back and passed backwards when there were options to drive forward

into space.

Rowett is constantly stressing how his side need to play with more composure and quality on the ball, something which hasn’t quite been there in the last couple of games but perhaps understandably so given their injury crisis.

Kenneth Zohore, Jake Cooper, Ryan Leonard and Maikel Kieftenbeld would have all likely started at Kenilworth Road. Rowett also doesn’t have the option of Connor Mahoney on the bench. The winger likes playing against Luton with two goals in his last two games against him. The Lions needed something different against Nathan Jones’s side.

With a depleted squad, players are being asked to go again and again in an unrelenting season. Some have suffered.

For that reason, some of the sloppiness or lack of quality can be excused but, as is always the case with this side, the players are still running themselves into the ground to try to pick up points. They stayed going until the very end against Luton.

Millwall have been boosted by the return of Billy Mitchell. He was one of three academy products on the bench, along with defenders Danny McNamara and Junior Tiensia.

Another youngster, Tyler Burey, was introduced in the 75th minute to give his side more of a threat out wide.

In the end, Millwall certainly deserved a point. Evans had a good headed chance in the first half that he squandered before Bradshaw through on goal and in acres of space - took two awful touches that gave Sluga the chance to come out to claim the ball after good work from Wallace.

Bartosz Bialkowski made a comfortable save from a Jordan Clark volley, too, just before half-time.

Former Millwall man Ryan Tunnicliffe was lucky not to see red for a studs-up challenge on Ben Thompson five minutes after the break.

Tunnicliffe was involved in Luton’s goal, as his deflected cross fell to Adebayo in the 55th minute and the

former Walsall man mis-hit his shot past Bialkowski.

Adebayo had a chance to double Luton’s lead from a Clark cross soon after but nodded over - extending Millwall’s record as the only Championship side not to concede a headed goal this season.

Wallace forced a brilliant save from Sluga from a free-kick with just over ten minutes left, before substitute Matt Smith hit an acrobatic effort narrowly over in the final minute of normal-time.

Just when it looked like Millwall would see their unbeaten run end, Shaun Williams stood a superb ball up to the far post on his weaker right foot and Smith, marked by two men, won the knock-down to find Evans, who rose well to beat the outstretched arm of Sluga. One can only imagine what the celebrations would have been like in the away end in normal times.

Millwall’s run has put to bed any worries of a relegation dogfight - it’s now about whether they can further close the gap to the top six.

Is that gap too big to make up?

Probably, especially given Millwall’s injury problems.

But in a season with no fans, they’ll be happy to finish in the top half and try to build for next season, with Rowett still needing to overhaul elements of the squad to make it really his own.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT didn’t rule out a late charge for the top six after George Evans’ injury-time equaliser at Luton Town on Tuesday night closed the gap to the play-offs to six points.

The last time the Lions lost, 3-1 to Nottingham Forest on January 16, they were fourteen points adrift of sixth place.

Rowett was asked after the draw at Kenilworth Road if his side still have a shot at the play-offs with fourteen games to go.

“Well, look, if you’d asked me six or seven games ago, where we were, the run of form we were in, we were all very frustrated and disappointed...if you look where we are now we’re fourteen points off the bottom three and six points off the top six [before Wednesday’s games],” Rowett said.

“So what I would say is it’s a far more hopeful position to be in and

we’re getting results.

“And we’ve got players to come back. If we can get some of those players back quickly then I think we look a completely different side.

“My frustration [Tuesday] was you just want the players to give us a bit more, kick on a bit more.

“Whether that’s me being greedy, but we’re capable of that. To perform like we did w a s just a little bit disappointing and not quite what we want.”

Jake Cooper has dislocated his shoulder twice this season

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL WERE given a major boost this week with the news that Jake Cooper doesn’t need immediate shoulder surgery – and the defender even wanted to play against Luton on Tuesday night.

Cooper dislocated his shoulder for a second time this season against Birmingham before missing the 0-0 stalemate against Wycombe last Saturday and the 1-1 draw against the Hatters.

Millwall had feared Cooper would miss the rest of the season. Cooper had made 136 consecutive league appearances – playing every minute – before dislocating his shoulder the first time, also against Blues.

Millwall are already depleted, with Ryan Leonard, Murray Wallace, Maikel Kieftenbeld, Connor Mahoney and Kenneth Zohore all unavailable through injury. Shaun Williams is playing with painkilling injections for a broken toe.

But Cooper could soon be back available.

“We’ve had some quite good news on Jake Cooper that it looks like he won’t need an operation yet,” Lions boss Gary Rowett said.

“If you ask anyone that’s got half a brain then I would say it will take a little bit longer than that!

“But it shows you again it typifies the group, players want to get out there and play. They want to put themselves through a little bit of discomfort for the cause.

“I think that’s brilliant.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT is grateful for such stable leadership at Millwall – and revealed phone calls from John Berylson after games give him the confidence to get on with the job.

The Lions went ten league games without a win earlier this season and one win in fifteen left them just seven points above the top six in the middle of January.

Eight managers have lost their jobs in the Championship this season, including former Millwall boss Neil Harris who was sacked by Cardiff after six defeats in a row.

But Berylson and chief executive Steve Kavanagh were never likely to act

rashly or bow to any outside pressure to potentially make a change.

And in the last month Millwall have pulled well clear of the bottom three to reignite their slim play-off chances.

“They’ve both been brilliant with me since I came to the club,” Rowett said.

“This is one of the reasons why I came to the club in the first place.

“My hope was to go in somewhere where those in charge are really levelheaded and we could build something long-term. They know what the club’s about.

“We all want to be ambitious, we all want to do as well as we can and challenge at the top end, but the club also recognises that there are some challenges that bring a little bit of realism.

“But that doesn’t mean to say we can’t

try and push.

“Steve does it day-to-day. John will ring after games and he’ll be realistic. He might be disappointed but he certainly won’t berate you or ask you too much.

“He’ll always say the same: ‘You’re the manager, it’s your job and you’ve got to make the right calls.’

“That gives you confidence, it gives you a stable working environment in which at least you have a chance to go and put performances in and win games.”

Rowett said that during that tough run it wasn’t difficult going into the training ground the morning after games and putting on a positive face.

“It’s not difficult because that’s what I’m paid to do. I’ve always been that way, and I’ve never shied away from difficult periods because that’s a huge part of the

job, managing the ups and downs,” he said.

“Everyone can manage when you’re winning games, it’s when you’re losing games you’ve got to earn your money and try and stay calm.

“You’re always a little bit frustrated, you’re always unhappy with those types of results but what you have to do is make sure the players don’t feel that disappointment.

“It has to be really clear for them what they have to do to get out of it. That’s what we’ve always tried to do, be consistent and create a good mood.

“That’s the best way to handle any difficult run like that.

“We weren’t playing badly, it was more just the results weren’t what we wanted them to be.”

Door opens for fans’ return

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk THE GOVERNMENT has paved the way for fans to return to sports events – but it is likely to be too late for Millwall supporters this season.

In Monday’s briefing on the lockdown exit strategy, prime minister Boris Johnson said, ”the turnstiles of our sports stadia will once again rotate”.

There will be pilot events before the provisional planned return of fans from May 17, but unless the Lions reach the play-offs then it will be 2021-22 before Millwall supporters see their team in live action again.

Organised outdoor sports can resume from March 29, meaning Fisher, Peckhams Town and Rye and Millwall Lionesses could be back in action next month.

Millwall fans were back at The Den for just two games this season – at a capacity of 2,000 – before the third lockdown in December banned crowds at sports events in the UK. The EFL Cup final was moved from February to April in the hope that some fans could return to Wembley. If that is a pilot event then 10,000 fans could be in attendance to see Manchester City take on Tottenham.

The EFL said: “Following a successful fan pilot programme in the autumn, the EFL and member clubs have shown test events for fans can be safely delivered with the appropriate measures in place.

“With the Carabao Cup Final taking place on April 25 and the culmination of the regular EFL season on May 8/9, we look forward to engaging with the government about its pilot programme and will be working to welcome as many fans as possible to the play-off finals which will conclude the 202021 season on the spring Bank Holiday weekend.”

Unless they reach the play-offs, Millwall’s season will end on May 8 with a trip to Coventry City.
