Hospitality is facing ‘armageddon’ say Southwark Chamber

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark hospitality is facing “armageddon” while some small business traders are missing out on Government support totally, according to industry leaders.

Peter Mantell, co-chair of the Southwark Chamber of Commerce, told the News that many small sole traders were passed over for support because they were not established early enough before the pandemic started.

Among the businesses hardest hit in Southwark during the pandemic were black and ethnic minority traders, he said, because they are more likely to rent a space in another business.

“The lack of support for small traders and businesses that didn’t meet the requirements back in March is appalling,” he said. “If you’re a one man band and you set up a company for all the reasons people do then you’re not covered and never have been and that’s a situation that’s not changed since March.”

Particularly affected by the coronavirus

are black and ethnic minority traders, said Mr Mantell, a business problem he feels has been under-discussed.

This is because many of Southwark’s small traders might rent a space as part of a larger business - and because they don’t pay business rates in their own right, they miss out on support, he said.

Hospitality too, has been devastated.

“I think that hospitality venues are hemorrhaging. It’s nice to be able to furlough people but that’s not your only cost.

“It’s armageddon really. And it’s really

hard to sell beer online. Who’s going to buy beer from their local pub when you could buy it from the brewery?”

As many businesses have been hammered by the economic impact of coronavirus, it has sparked a scramble for any grants and support available.

“Demand is far outpacing supply,” he added. But beyond any additional financial support, the Government could do more by giving businesses more notice, believes the Chamber of Commerce.

“A little bit of notice would go a long way,” he said.

Market forces shoppers to wear masks outside, under obscure 1829 law

Borough Market has used an obscure pre-Victorian law to make wearing masks outside at its market legally enforceable.

The by-law, dating back to 1829, means the market is the first outdoor venue to make wearing a mask legally enforceable, it says.

Offenders at the busy market now face a £50 fine if they do not wear a mask despite being asked repeatedly by security staff to do so.

Adrian Bunnis, Chair of the market’s trustees, said: “We have encouraged the wearing of face masks since the first lockdown.

“We have now decided to enforce it through our by-laws in the knowledge that the vast majority of our customers will support this.

“With London being the epicentre of the new Coronavirus variant, we feel we have a duty to the community to do this so they can shop in confidence.”

The move also means that shoppers will be prohibited from eating food and drink in the market area, as it would involve removing a mask.

Access to the market will be restricted, with a one-way-system in operation.

Security guards will carry out checks at the access points and help ensure social distancing is place, say market officials.

The power is given to the trustees under the Borough Market (Southwark) Act 1829, which sets out market by-laws.

The news comes after the market’s managing director, Darren Henaghan, said traders were stockpiling cheeses over Brexit.

Over £3,000 worth of pizza in one week delivered to King’s

Theo's customers in Camberwell have raised more than £3,000 in one week to get hundreds of free pizzas to King’s frontline workers.

The pizzeria on Grove Lane began donating free pizzas to King’s College Hospital during the first wave of COVID-19 last year.

Customers soon got involved and helped keep up the supply of meals by purchasing online vouchers, covering the cost of making and transporting the food.

During the first lockdown, the Camberwell community raised £5,000 and got 1,500 pizzas over to the hospital’s staff.

Now, as the NHS faces the darkest days of the pandemic so far, Theo’s have restarted the scheme and £3,000 was already raised after one post on social networking site NextDoor.

One local to praise the initiative is the mother of a frontline worker. She commented underneath the update: “I just wanted to add to other people’s positive comments that my daughter, who works as a midwife at King’s, told me with such delight that pizzas arrived one day - you can’t imagine how amazing it is for the morale of the staff - thank you so much for this.”

“As you can imagine, times are very tough for us financially at the moment so there is a limit to what we can fund ourselves,” Simon told the News.

“We are willing to fund some of this but really what will make it the huge success we want it to be is donations.

“Quite simply, the more we can raise, the more food we can deliver to staff over a longer period of time.”

All funds simply cover the labour costs and ingredients, with no profit to the restaurant.

sixteen covid deaths in just seven days

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The number of COVID-19 deaths in Southwark is quickly rising for the first time since May after weeks of escalating hospital admissions.

According to the government’s latest data, sixteen deaths in Southwark were recorded between Monday, January 4 to Sunday, January 10. These figures are based on deaths recorded within 28 days of returning a positive test result. Seven days were recorded in the previous week, and five in seven days over Christmas.

Throughout the whole of October and September, no deaths were recorded and, in late autumn and early winter, were hovering at around one or two a week - if any.

Doctors say the most accurate way of measuring the impact of the virus is to look at the overall number of deaths where COVID-19 has been listed on the death certificate, often as

a contributing factor. When looking at this data, 271 have been recorded since February 2020.

Since cases skyrocketed in December as the new variant took hold over London and huge parts of south-east England, hospital admissions have also risen.

There is always a period of some weeks between rising admissions and deaths, as people often deteriorate after being ill for several weeks, and can spend weeks in intensive care before they pass away.

However, advances in care, improved treatments, and the most vulnerable people being more likely to shield this time around compared to the early days of the pandemic means that we are not seeing the same mortality rate as last year.

The vast majority of people to be infected with the virus will recover most with no medium or long-term side effects. Around a third of people infected are believed to be completely asymptomatic.

But a significant minority do need hospital treatment. And although the most vulnerable groups are those over 80, and with particular chronic conditions including diabetes, lung conditions, and heart disease. But they do not make up all those who are hospitalised. According to NHS England, a quarter of all those admitted to hospital with the virus are currently under the age of 55.

There are early signs that the number of daily, new infections may be starting to fall across London. In Southwark, there were 311 positive test results reported on Tuesday, (January 12), compared with a high of nearly 700 at the end of December. If this trend continues, it is a clear sign the latest lockdown is working and will buy valuable time for the vaccination rollout.

The critical question is whether the

fall will be sustained, and whether it comes in time to prevent disaster in the NHS. Admissions rose by nearly a quarter in the first week of January, leading London Mayor Sadiq Khan to declare a ‘major incident’, akin to a terrorist attack or disaster, due to the pressure on the NHS. Firefighters and police officers with ‘blue light’ driving experience have been drafted in as ambulance drivers to help respond to a record 8,000 urgent calls a day - up from the usual 5,000 in busy periods. There are currently huge numbers of COVID-19 patients in all local hospitals. As we reported last week, King’s College Hospital is close to being ‘completely full’ due to the pressure on its intensive care beds.

There were 622 at King’s as of Tuesday, January 5, 90 of whom were in intensive care and dependent on mechanical ventilators. Urgent cancer surgeries have been delayed at King’s and across other hospitals in London.

London’s Nightingale Hospital, in the Excel, has also reopened and started admitting non-Covid patients to free up bed space, after previously being put on standby in May last year.

In an effort to free up bed space for patients, King’s College Hospital is now discharging COVID-19 patients into hotels once they are ‘medically fit’ to be discharged. The trust says those being sent to Best Western’s London Hotel Groups are mostly homeless patients with nowhere suitable to live once they are in recovery. The chain says it has capacity to offer 5,000 beds to recovering COVID-19 patients in a similar initiative to the work housing rough sleepers during the early days of the pandemic.

Residents face rising charges, yet unreliable heating system

Leaseholder Chloe Hill, who pays around £2,000 every year in ‘extortionate’ service charges, says problems with unreliable or completely broken heating and hot water since 2016 had left her “completely exhausted, mentally exhausted, and worried for other people who are not as able as I am.”

Among the neighbours, living near and also left in the cold over the holidays are clinically extremely vulnerable shielders, and an 87-yearold.

Although numerous calls and emails were made about at least eight households being affected as far back as November, the problem remained unfixed by December 29 when a

contractor arrived and, misidentifying the issue, conducted unnecessary work inside vulnerable residents’ flats, it is alleged.

A temporary boiler, diesel fuelled, was finally installed on January 3 after the complaints were escalated to council leader Kieron Williams.

Although most flats are now back up and running, some homes remain without heating.

“I am astonished that I have had no explanation from the council,” 56-yearold Ms Hill adds, when asked what reasons were given for the apparent delay and miscommunications.

She says other problems reported include a radiator in her home that leaked for ten weeks straight and was only repaired after six separate visits, and contractors arriving without any warning, no ID and - most shockingly - no PPE. Frustratingly, when an engineer attends but the problem is not fixed, residents have to wait several hours before they are able to report the fault again - wasting valuable time.

Particularly galling is the huge cost

levelled on leaseholders, who will not only end up paying higher bills from fan heaters and temporary boilers, but also have to burden major works bills.

“Not knowing what the heating costs per day are with this temporary new boiler is a massive worry,” Ms Hill says.

As an artist she has already been financially hit by the pandemic and is currently living on her savings. She is now dreading the next adjusted service charge bill.

She says the problems with the district heating have been so numerous and long-winded to fix that contractors OCO Ltd are ‘almost everpresent’ and trying to get complaints taken seriously is like ‘groundhog day’.

“Patching up doesn’t work,” she reasons. “We’re going to be paying a lot of money either way, so I’d rather the cost was going toward a new, functioning, clean system that actually worked.”

A feasibility study into future works has, however, been delayed due to Coronavirus.

Meanwhile, the News has also received reports of similar outages

over Christmas on Peckham’s Consort Estate and, most recently, all eighty households in Old Kent’s Road’s Sylvan Grove were believed to be without heating and hot water for at least two days, due to a changeover in how credit is topped up with its energy supplier.

One woman, an infection control nurse, tweeted the council saying she, her elderly mother, and her four-year-old child had been without heating since January 6 with no way to top up their credit. Welcome packs detailing the new system reportedly only arrived four days after it had already gone live.

Fed-up council tenants on a Bermondsey estate have been left without consistent heating for a shocking four months - even over Christmas.

Residents of the Rouel Road estate have been experiencing difficulty with their heating since October 1, forcing them to shiver in the cold inside their own homes.

Some have resorted to wearing their winter coats indoors in an effort to stay warm.

Others, who have been given fan heaters to make up for their nonfunctioning radiators, have racked up high electric bills from having the expensive devices running constantly.

Residents first sounded the alarm to the News months ago - and when we contacted the council, officials promised that the heating situation was all in hand.

But months later, and despite several enquiries from this paper, residents in Woolstaplers, Amina and Cadbury Way are still left out in the cold.

Terry, 72, has lived on the estate for nearly 40 years; this has been the longest the estate’s heating has gone off.

“It’s freezing,” he said.

“I’ve just had enough of it.

They keep palming you off, the council, but you get nowhere.

“You ring them up but there’s no-one in the office, and they say they’ll get back to you, but they never do.

“I’ve got a little fan heater, but it’s not having much of an effect. It’s just a joke.”

While outages are affecting the whole estate, some have got their heating back temporarily, while still fearing it going off.

Mum Charlotte, who lives on Amina Way, said she got some heating back the week before Christmas, but hadn’t had any for three months beforehand.

But now she faces a battle to be refunded the extra cost of expensive electric fan heaters she was forced to use.

“It’s a lot of money,” she said. “I’ve had to pay it on top of the heating that I wasn’t receiving. That’s the next fight on my hands, to get it back.

“But they just don’t seem to care. It’s been four months, they kept on saying it’s been sorted, but it’s just not true.

“There’s so many vulnerable tenants and people with needs as well, this

shouldn’t be happening.

“They don’t see the tenants, they don’t see the impacts this has. They need to do everything they can to fix this.”

The News has contacted the council three times about the issue of heating on the Rouel Road estate.

In November, we were told that the issue had been sorted.

But residents told us this was not the case. Subsequent requests for comment went unanswered.

The problem is with the district heating There are no quick fixes when it comes to district heating problems, as residents on some of the most beleaguered estates will only know too well.

In February last year, the News reported that it would cost at least £350 million to improve the ageing system across the borough, and ensure it met green targets. Some of the communal boilers are up to 40 years old and at the end of their lifespan.

There are 120 heat networks in Southwark, serving 17,000 homes, many of which are already obsolete. Replacing all of them is a huge undtertaking and will take years. But patching up problems before major works are fully consulted on and costed comes at a huge financial outlay, too.

In January 2020 we reported that half a million had been spent on fixing up Aylesbury Estate’s communal heating to prevent another winter of discontent - but it still broke down and was only up-and-running again with the help of temporary boilers - just like Dighton Court.

And now a gas strike

British Gas workers went on strike for five days last week over a ‘fire and rehire’ contract dispute.

Labour MPs have backed the walkout with Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes saying: “British Gas workers shouldn’t have to strike to stop unethical, exploitative fire and rehire practices, they should have protection in law.

“Proud to stand with them. As a member of GMB union they have my full support.”

Longstanding heating problems affect those in temporary housing The issues do not only affect leaseholders and tenants. Some of the most vulnerable people, living in temporary accommodation, are also being placed in homes with longstanding heating problems and struggling to navigate the repairs service.

One woman, a rape survivor whose name we cannot publish for safety reasons, who lives in temporary accommodation in Southwark, told the News she had been burnt when a boiler, reported numerous times over several months, exploded ‘like a bomb’ in her flat.

She first notified the repairs service to the leak on July 15. Although engineers visited and new parts were fitted, by October the boiler was leaking uncontrollably - and damaging electricity sockets.

Despite numerous calls outs throughout October, November and early December, the mother says her requests for a new boiler to be fitted were ignored.

On December 18 the boiler exploded and sprayed hot water around her flat. She described her anxiety as now ‘sky high’ after being scalded.

In an email to councillors and officers shared with this paper, explaining she felt her only resort was to take legal action after being left for several days in the freezing cold and increasingly damp flat, she wrote: “I have had so many problems in my property since I have moved in, I no longer wish to live here, I am not safe and living here is affecting both mine and my child’s mental, emotional and physical health... Are you trying to break me completely?”

CABINET OFFICE confirmation of Dr Tamas Szakmany’s award made him “astonished, touched and humbled”.

The 44 year-old from Newport explained: “I thought I was doing my job like everybody else. I didn’t think for one minute it would result in this. I’m really surprised.

Once I was allowed to talk about it, the first thing I said was how fortunate I was to work with this team.

“2020 was difficult professionally.

Personally, I had many successes. It was a double-edged sword. The MBE is recognition for the enormous effort everyone has made to get us through the first wave. I hope

we have similar success again.”

The Royal Gwent Hospital critical care consultant, recognised for exceptional service to the NHS, spearheaded Welsh Critical Care Network response during the pandemic, rapidly disseminating information on lessons learnt via traditional and social media platforms.

Filming his personal and professional life, he helped produce an emotional deeply personal documentary “Critical: Inside Intensive Care Coronavirus” episode, broadcasted by BBC Wales and included among American Society of Chest Physicians and Society of Critical Care Medicine teaching materials.

“Even though we’ve hardly moved out of the office, it’s all been pretty busy,” explained the East Belfast Community Development Agency Executive Director.

“We’ve been managing our COVID programme, buying bulk food to get out to groups we support. We developed a network of groups delivering small packages to people who are

vulnerable, shielding or in financial need.” The 57 year-old continued: “There are so many stories from older people who say ‘it’s just good to know people are thinking about us.”

nursery battles large rival in Dulwich

Campaign to see off plans for a 195 capacity nursery in former community centre mounts

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The owners of a small independent nursery in East Dulwich say plans for a 195-capacity rival next door could destroy their business - as well as losing one of the only remaining community centres left in the area.

Two planning applications have been submitted to Southwark Council to convert 33 East Dulwich Grove, the site of the former Dulwich Constitutional Club, into a 195-capacity nursery with 51 staff members.

The application is due to be assessed

by Southwark Council’s planning committee on January 19. It has been proposed by early years provider N Family Club, and its financial backers NSS IV (Investments) LLP. More than a hundred objections have been lodged against the new nursery, and the loss of the community centre, which dates back to the 1880s and has been used variously as a first aid depot during the Second World War, and as an events and function space.

Alex Ng, the manager of EDG Nursery - an independent business on East Dulwich Grove - says if given the greenlight the huge new nursery would ‘swallow up’ businesses in the area that have worked hard to survive throughout the pandemic.

Alex says there are around 43 nurseries within the area, including nineteen other companies within

25 minutes’ walk of the site whose businesses will all be threatened.

Although financially viable, many may struggle to cope with a large provider entering the market. Tellingly, many have spare spaces - casting doubt on claims there is a need for new provision.

The application states the new nursery, if built, would operate a ‘no car policy’, a point of contention for local businesses.

Since the Melbourne Grove Low Emissions Neighbourhood more traffic has been idling directly outside the nursery. There are concerns the development would, despite claims otherwise, only further increase traffic due to the sheer number of places and staff.

In a letter to parents, Alex described the ‘complete turmoil’ the nursery, like all families, has had to adapt to: “Should these applications be granted, this new nursery will have a huge detrimental effect to EDG Nursery and numerous other nurseries within the area.”

News that the former club could be turned into a commercial operation has touched a nerve among residents.

One objector commented: “In times like these we need to promote places of social and communal spirit which massively help in providing hope and happiness to large parts of the community.

“The East Dulwich Constitutional Club is a special and unique space which we are so lucky to still have and needs to be used in a way in which

will benefit and reach out to as many members of the community as possible whilst maintaining its charm and character.”

Several staff members also lodged objections, saying their jobs would be put at risk.

Another described the proposal as “bad for our community, bad for a much-loved piece of East Dulwich's history, bad for the fantastic nursery that already exists next door, bad for local pedestrians and bad for our neighbourhood's air and noise quality.”

The application explains the company's ethos: “N Family Club believes that Nursery is more than day care.

“In keeping with this the nursery runs a curated, monthly programme of one-off special events, workshops, talks and shows aimed at both families and parents.”

It also notes its Hackney site has been rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted across all areas.”

The application also emphasises that sustainable or recycled materials will be used where possible, with heritage assets in the building also maintained.

A decision will be made on Wednesday, January 20.

Schools urgently need laptops

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Schools are desperately trying to help pupils without computers of their own before they are left even further behind, as government-promised laptops fail to materialise.

A parent from Goose Green Primary School has been collecting old and unwanted laptops and converting them into Chromebooks for pupils without the technology they need to work from home.

Many of the pupils at the East Dulwich primary do not have a laptop of their own and are either struggling to keep up from home or having to go into school despite the lockdown.

PTA member Helen Kelsall started the campaign with her husband after finding out in November that only six laptops would be provided by the government for the school’s pupils - and only if more than fifteen tested positive for the virus.

Before the latest lockdown was announced pupils were left struggling if they had to self-isolate at home due to COVID-19 exposure. Now the situation is even more dire, with the school “nowhere near” the number of laptops its pupils need while they remain closed to most pupils until at least February.

As well as converting unwanted laptops, and fully wiping their memory, cash donations are also being used to purchase new equipment via a JustGiving Fundraising page.

Other schools to share call outs for spare laptops include Snowsfield Primary, which has urged anyone who can donate to get in touch, and Peckham’s Hollydale Primary, which tweeted: “Plea to alleviate digital poverty at our school. Lots of our families require laptops or tablets.

“If you work for an organisation or know anyone who has old, working laptops or tablets that could be donated, we'd be beyond grateful.”

The schools who do have provision say they have been able to support students thanks to the generosity of parents.

St Mary Magdalene Primary says 90 per cent of its pupils are now accessing remote, online learning thanks to community donations and support from the charity Business for Schools; which provides recycled electronic equipment.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle described the government scheme as ‘still a mess’ ten months after the first promises were made.

He urged any parents in his constituency who needed help with accessing technology, or anyone with laptops to donate, to contact his office.

Around half of the pledged million laptops have been distributed across the country, with a further 100,000 sent out this week. But teachers say it falls far short of demand, has been painfully slow, and does not address problems with slow internet or the cost of WiFi. This week it emerged Williamson had even turned down BT’s offer of WiFi vouchers for children from vulnerable families, back in June 2020.

Williamson also came under fire after urging parents to report poor home learning provision to Ofsted in a House of Commons speech last Wednesday.

The comments were slammed by the National Association of Headteachers’ general secretary, Paul Whiteman, who said staff only had a 48-hour turnaround to set up remote learning after repeated denials schools would not close.

“Meanwhile pupils up and down the country are still awaiting the internet devices that were promised last summer,” Mr Whiteman said.

“We’re into the ninth month of the pandemic and many schools and pupils are still waiting for their allocation to come through.

“And devices are only being made available for older primary pupils, not those in key stage one at all.

“The government really has really let young people down miserably on this one.”

FEAR THAT LAMPS MAY GO OUT AT Florence nightingale Museum

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The SE1 museum honouring Florence Nightingale’s legacy will close because of a collapse in visitor numbers during the pandemic.

The Florence Nightingale museum, in the grounds of St Thomas’ Hospital, says it cannot continue beyond February 28 “for the foreseeable future.”

While hospitals bearing Nightingale’s name were set up in the first wave to treat patients, the museum says it has suffered a catastrophic collapse in visitor numbers and funding.

It has now embarked on a restructure and a number of staff are likely to be made redundant.

“Currently, the Museum – an

independent charity – is reliant on visitors for around 95% of its income and more than half of those are visitors travelling to London from overseas,” said senior management in a letter announcing the move.

“Since March 2020, visitor numbers have reduced to such an extent that it is not feasible for the Museum to re-open at the moment.

“Given that it is likely to be many months before anything like a return to normality, the Museum has no alternative other than to cut its costs significantly and to build a new operational structure far less dependent on visitors arriving at its front door.”

The museum had planned to reopen this month, with external funding from the Arts Council and National Lottery Fund.

Son who killed his mother sentenced to indefinite hospital order

Police found man 'asleep next to 31 cannabis plants'

kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Police praised the 'incredible bravery and dignity' shown by a woman's family after her son was sentenced last Friday for fatally stabbing her.

Jamal Sealy, 31 of Lewisham Way, pleaded guilty to manslaughter with diminished responsibility at the Old Bailey on Friday, 8 January.

He was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order under Sections 37 and 41 of the Mental Health Act. At approximately 9pm on 10 June, 2020, Sealy entered Walworth Police Station and told officers that he had stabbed his mother.

He was arrested and police attended his address where they found 58-yearold Dawn Bennett with injuries.

She was taken to a south London hospital where she died on 16 June – the day of her 59th birthday.

Medical experts found that Sealy was suffering paranoid beliefs. He pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter.

It is said that Mrs Bennett told police she had been concerned about her son's mental health for some time and he had been due to be assessed with a view to him being sectioned.

The furlough scheme has covered significant staff costs, the museum added, but it is due to end in April – and even if extended, the museum could not afford to make contributions to staff wages.

Rotherhithe Tunnel shut until saturday

josh@southwarknews.co.uk The Rotherhithe Tunnel has been closed throughout this week for “critical” fire safety repairs.

The major route is being closed between 10am to 5am until Saturday, January 16. TfL says the closure is needed to repair the tunnel’s fire water main so that the hydrants work if there is a fire.

The tunnel is closed to all traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists.

“Safety is our top priority, and this urgent five-day closure of the Rotherhithe Tunnel is essential to ensure the tunnel remains safe for

people to use,” said Glynn Barton of TfL. ”I’d like to ask people in the area who need to travel to plan ahead for their journeys and continue to follow the vital safety restrictions which remain in place at the tunnel.”

Traffic will be encouraged to use the Blackwall Tunnel and Tower Bridge instead. The City of London will also be carrying out works on Southwark Bridge, closing the crossing southbound from January 11 to February 22.

Traffic will be diverted via Upper Thames Street, Puddle Dock, Queen Victoria Street, Blackfriars Bridge, Blackfriars Road and Southwark Street.

Taking to twitter officers said "We will leave no stone unturned in our quest to take weapons and drugs off the streets" citing the work of PCSO Agyeman from their Safer Neighbourhood Team in Newington, who found a knife and Class A drugs hidden in an air vent on one of her regular weapons sweeps.

Meanwhile in Nunhead the haul of cannabis came after a drug warrant was carried out at an address. The police tweeted it is "fair to say it was an unwelcome wake up call for the male found asleep next to the plants but luckily there was a bed waiting for him in our custody cell."

The incident took place at around 1.10pm on Wednesday, December 16.

The victim was on-board the train when two men and two women boarded the service and were arguing amongst themselves.

The group reportedly sat either side of the victim and were shouting

close to him, resulting in spittle landing on him.

The victim went to leave his seat, but was blocked by one of the men.

After the victim asked not to be spat on, he was punched several times in the face, resulting in facial injuries and broken glasses.

Police believe a passenger on the same carriage filmed the incident on their phone, and would like to obtain any video footage that exists.

British Transport Police are asking anyone with information to get in contact by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 257 of 16/12/20.

Walworth man charged with string of sex offences

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Walworth man is due to stand trial accused of a series of sex attacks in Southwark.

Joshua Cambell Victorin, 24, of Albany Road, has been charged with seven sex offences on women between December 16 last year and January 4 this year.

The offences are alleged to have taken place in Walworth, Bermondsey and Peckham.

Victorin is also alleged to have been in possession of cannabis.

He is due at a hearing before Inner London Crown Court on February 5.

Blaze after a dishwater fault?

A fire that broke out in a Peckham flat over the weekend is believed to have been caused by a dishwasher fault.

Part of the kitchen in the flat in Kelly Avenue was damaged by the blaze on Sunday evening, January 10.

Around fifteen people had left the four storey building before four fire engines arrived shortly after 8pm, with no one reported as injured.

Twenty-five fire fighters had the fire under control just over an hour later, by 9.15pm.

A dishwasher fault is currently being investigated as the cause.

This week the local authority announced the number of councilmanaged trees, currently around 82,500, will be increased by thirteen per cent to help make Southwark carbon neutral by 2030.

Over the next five to ten years, five million will be spent on planting, caring and replacing them if needed.

The council says the programme will more than cover historic losses. As the News reported in March 2020, the council has cut down more than 2,000 trees in the last decade; more than it planted in the same period.

In the next year, around 2,400 heavy standard sized trees will be placed along highways, parks and in housing estates.

Two suspected handguns and a suspected shotgun were seized, say police, and have been sent for examination by forensics experts.

No one was injured in the arrest and no firearm was discharged, they added.

“This was some excellent work by all those involved.,” said Detective Constable Chris Barrett.

“As a result of the prompt and courageous action by officers, three suspected firearms have been seized, no one was injured and the suspect arrested.”

“This case demonstrates the dangerous and unexpected challenges that can be faced by police at any time, and the professionalism of the officers who deal with them.”

‘Handguns and shotgun’ seized at Deptford hotel josh@southwarknews.co.uk A man was arrested last weekend after three suspected guns were seized from a hotel room in Deptford.

Police were called just after 9pm on Saturday to an address in Plumstead, after the occupants said they had been threatened by a man with a gun on social media.

The man is known to them. Officers launched an operation to track the man down, who was suspected to be staying in a hotel somewhere in south east London.

Cops forced entry into a Deptford hotel at around 5am and arrested a 25-year-old suspect for threats to kill and firearms offences.

The remainder are likely to be saplings planted in woodland and for hedges; all a mix of native and non-native species.

Officers already map, log and check up every tree on local authority land every two to three years.

Community groups and the public will also be asked to nominate areas that would benefit in the coming months.

Around 43 ‘sites of importance to nature conservation’ have already been earmarked. Other ‘greening’ work will include creating new hedgerows and expanding natural habitat.

Cllr Johnson Situ, the cabinet member for climate emergency, planning and transport, and Cllr Catherine Rose, cabinet member for leisure, environment and roads said: “Our exciting new tree planting programme will touch every corner of the borough, helping to tackle air pollution, reduce carbon, and address the climate emergency.

“We hope to bring people together from all over Southwark, to share in deciding where these 10,000 new trees will go and to help them to flourish and grow.

“Our aim is to create beautiful neighbourhoods and environments for both the boroughs’ people and our wildlife, for many years to come.”

A decision on the future of the beloved ‘footbridge oaks’ in Sydenham Hill Wood is due next week.

The two mature oaks straddling Cox’s Walk footbridge were saved from being felled in December after a dramatic stand-off between protestors and the council’s contractors.

Although Justice Cutts threw out a court application to have the activists removed from their 24-hour camp, the trees’ future remained in the balance. Soon after, the local authority reapplied for planning permission to fell after its original notice had expired. The council says the cost and time that could be spent exploring alternative options to completing repairs on the Victorian bridge would be better spent elsewhere.

It’s a view disputed by campaigners who argue alternative options can both repair the bridge and protect the trees - and their ecosystem.

The application was open for public comment until Monday, January 10 and a decision will be returned on Tuesday 19.

Woman, 60, dies in collision with truck outside tube station

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A woman died in a collision with a truck outside Surrey Quays station on Tuesday morning.

Police were called to the collision at around 11.30am outside of the station on Hawkstone Road.

A woman, who officers have now established was aged sixty, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers have now informed her next of kin.

There have been no arrests as the News went to press, said police, and some road closures were in place

around the area.

“Hawkstone Road is currently closed and will remain closed into the afternoon,” said Ch Supt, Colin Wingrove on Tuesday.

“An exit point from Surrey Quays Overground Station which opens in to the crime scene is also closed.

However, the station is open and operating as normal “The truck driver is assisting officers with their enquiries. However, no arrests have been made at this stage.”

One exit at the station was closed, but the station remained open, said a Met spokesperson, with other points of entry and exit.

Samantha Green was given the British Empire Medal (BEM) in recognition of her dedication to helping animals in Sri Lanka.

that Samantha, the founder of Dogstar Foundation, had been shortlisted for the Ceva Animal Welfare Awards for her work.

Sam, who grew up in Peckham, found herself in Sri Lanka while recovering from the trauma of the 7/7 London terror attack. On July 7, 2005, Sam - who had worked for London Underground since the age of sixteen - was responsible

Two youth leaders who helped develop Peckham’s new mental health service for young people have visited its team for the first time.

The teenagers toured the drop-in centre in Rye Lane, which opened earlier this year, to see its work in action. The service, called The Nest, is the only face-to-face support in

Southwark that is open to any young person needing help - without a referral. It opened this year with funding from Southwark Council, and is run by Groundwork London.

During lockdown its team has still been operating, albeit slightly differently using phone and online meetings instead. It was co-designed with the help of children and young

for leading a specialist team of engineers helping police access the underground tunnels in the days after the blasts; a harrowing experience.

Under a year later she was made redundant due to budget cuts and decided to take some time out on a trip overseas.

While in Sri Lanka in 2006, Sam asked her husband Mark to send out parasite treatments for unwell dogs she had seen suffering.

One encounter with a dog riddled with mange was pivotal, and by 2013 she and her partner had relocated to Sri Lanka to run the newly set up Dogstar Foundation full time.

Their work has continued despite terrorist attacks in April 2019 and the ongoing challenges of COVID-19.

The reasoning behind the name is that a nest is a safe home where something can grow and spread its wings to leave. I hope any young person can come here and get the right support they need.”

He was joined by Cllr Jasmine Ali and Iman, fourteen, from New Kent Road and another Coin Street Youth Leader.

“It’s really important that young people have strong mental health because it impacts everything you do and every decision you make,” Iman said.

Cassandra Buchannan

Teachers honoured by Queen Two teachers from Southwark have been given special awards from the Queen.

The head of Charles Dickens Primary School has been awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours list.

Cassandra Buchannan, who is also the CEO of The Charter Schools Educational Trust, was recognised for services to Education.

Another educator to receive a gong was Southwark resident Leonie Huie, who is currently head of health and social care at Bishop Challoner School in Shadwell. She received a British Empire Medal.

Ms Huie, a mother-of-three, also

provides business coaching to mothers and will be familiar to readers from her previous teaching positions at Harris Academy Peckham during its transition from Warwick Park School; St Saviour’s and St Olave’s Girls’ School; Lilian Baylis Technology School and ARK Globe Academy.

She told the News: “It’s such an amazing award to receive as a secondary school teacher in London, especially with what’s going on in schools recently.

“It was so nice to see more women on the honours list and ethnic minorities like myself as well NHS staff and key workers.”

24hr debt advice service launched to meet demand Debt Free London is will operate its free debt advice service 24-hours a day throughout January in response to a huge upsurge in the number of people struggling with problem debt and financial insecurity due to the pandemic.

Seventy new advisers have been recruited to help respond to the increased demand, with funding from Thrive London.

Research shows one in three people have relied on some form of debt to simply get by since March 2020, and one in ten have missed a bill or debt repayment in the same period. January is often their busiest time of year.

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “The coronavirus crisis has wreaked havoc on our nation’s economy and hit the personal finances of some of the most vulnerable people in our city hardest.

Give parents food vouchers

T

he start of 2021 has been a time of very mixed emotions for all of us.

There is hope on the horizon with the start of the coronavirus vaccine roll out, but still many challenges as the rate of coronavirus has risen rapidly recently, at least partially due to the new variant of the virus. At the same time the pressure on our hospitals has been growing and growing, with NHS staff who are already exhausted and burnt out working relentlessly to look after higher numbers of COVID patients than ever.

Since the start of last week schools across London have switched to teaching children from home, with schools only open for children of key

workers, children unable to study from home because of a lack of internet access, or those without a laptop or tablet and vulnerable children.

This followed yet another U-turn by the Government for the education sector.

Just a fortnight ago schools in Lambeth were told that they must open at the start of term, while schools in Southwark were told to close. On a conference call on the day of this announcement, the Tory education minister was unable to provide any justification for it, and it is just another example of the chaos and confusion that schools and parents have had to contend with since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Since the debacle of last August’s

GCSE, BTEC and A-level results I have been pressing ministers to bring forward plans for a fair replacement for the national exams that normally take place every summer. It is only fair that this year’s exams have been cancelled due to the impact that coronavirus has had on so many young people’s studies, but the detail of exactly what replaces this will be key and the on-going uncertainty is causing great anxiety for many students, and preventing teachers from being able to plan.

The pictures of the free school meal boxes distributed to some families across the country in recent days are absolutely shameful. Every child needs nutritious food to thrive and it is unconscionable that any organisation should be profiting at the expense of hungry children. It is absolutely clear that parents would be able to access much more, much higher quality food which also caters to their own children’s preferences and dietary needs if they were provided with vouchers for free school meals instead of meagre, poor quality food parcels and the government must act urgently to sort this system out.

As we wait for the relief that the vaccines will bring, out thanks continue to go to staff in our NHS and social care, schools and everyone working in frontline roles, helping to see us through this very challenging time. We owe it to them to stick to the restrictions, stay at home wherever possible, stop the spread of coronavirus and save lives.

By the end of the week all care homes will have the vaccine

his is my first column of the year so I want to wish you a happy and safe 2021. We start the year in very difficult times, with coronavirus cases surging and our local hospitals under immense strain. However, with the vaccines now being given to people in Southwark I am hopeful we will be in better times soon.

Sadly the government left if far too late to change the COVID rules both before Christmas and at the start of the school term. By failing to learn the lessons of their delay last March, they have again let infections race through our population, pushing our hospitals to the brink and allowing the toll on our community be much worse than it need have been.

As a result the Mayor of London has declared a Mayor Incident in London, with one in thirty people in the capital now having COVID and our city’s hospitals very close to being full. I know from all the NHS staff I’ve spoken to over the last few days that they are moving heaven and earth to keep care going for all who need it most. The council is also working round the clock to support the people of our borough.

I also need to ask for your help by staying home, to bring cases back down.

The new variant of the virus is much easier to catch and pass on, and one in three people who have it don’t know. So please only go out if you really have to. I know this is not easy and I want to thank

everyone for the part you are playing.

If you do need to go out – because you really can’t work at home, to buy necessities, for health care, to volunteer to help our community or for an emergency like escaping domestic abuse – please take every precaution to stay safe. Remembering to stay at least two meters from people you don’t live with and to wear a face covering when you are in any public place with other people, inside or out. If we all do these things we will reduce infections and save lives.

The good news is vaccines are now being rolled out locally. More than 22,000 people have received a vaccine in south east London, with that number going up every day.

Having met some of the first people to receive their vaccination, I know it is hugely emotional moment for many, knowing they will soon have this protection after such a difficult year.

The evidence has shown the vaccine is safe and effective, and it is our best hope of combating this virus and getting back to life as normal. I will be having mine as soon as I am offered one and I hope that everyone in the borough will do the same.

The vaccine is free and only available on the NHS to people in priority groups. So you’ll need to wait for the NHS to contact you. That’s to make sure those who are most likely to become seriously ill get the protection the vaccine offers first.

I’m particularly delighted to say that by the end of the week everyone in a Southwark care home will hopefully have received their first dose. This is for all residential care settings so includes homes for those with learning disabilities and mental health support needs as well as older people.

A huge amount of effort is being put into ensuring eligible people get their life saving injection within hours of each batch arriving in Southwark – the only uncertainty is how quickly the vaccines will arrive.

I, along with the Mayor of London, have been calling for the government to share daily figures so we know our community is getting our fair share.

Sadly there are a few scams going round. So remember test, trace and vaccination are all free – the NHS will never ask for your bank details for any of these services, and anyone offering a paid-for vaccine is committing a crime.

The council is continuing to do all that we can to support local people and businesses affected by the lockdown.

The only solution to yearly heating problems is to scrap the old system

O

nce again district heating failures are plaguing residents in estates across Southwark. But now, not only are families freezing cold and unable to have a hot shower, they are also stuck at home and suffering during the worst pandemic in living memory.

It is a truly awful time to be unable to wash,

or leave the house, and comes after a year of loneliness, financial hardship, and unbearable worry for many.

Fan heaters and temporary boilers are not

even a medium term solution. They also came push costs onto already struggling residents.

One of those affected by regular outages

described the situation as ‘groundhog day’. In

our Review of 2020, published last week, we had focused on heating and hot water troubles and residents left freezing and out of pocket in

January and February last year. Some have been

reporting faults on and off throughout the year for half a decade.

Aylesbury and Brandon Estates have been

particularly hard-hit in recent years, but the

systems are obsolete, or at the end of their working lives across huge areas of the borough.

Few estates are unscathed.

COVID-19 and its impact on how we all work, and the council’s own resources, has undoubtedly had an impact. But this was an entirely foreseeable situation. Outages are such regular occurrences that the council has been ploughing funding into costly ‘patch ups’ in the hope they can prevent future breakdowns. This work, too, has limits.

The only real solution is to scrap the old systems and replace with new ones. The cost, as we have detailed before, is huge. And there are other considerations - including how to ensure whatever comes next is ‘future proof’ and ecofriendly.

Although this is undoubtedly a huge undertaking it is remarkable how little progress has been made over the last five years.

If only this work had been pushed through more quickly, we wouldn’t have elderly, vulnerable people sat shivering in freezing cold flats during a global health crisis.

A lesson on how the other half live is given in a property listing for a luxury high-rise apartment on the South Bank.

The Camberwell Green branch of the party passed a motion of no-confidence in Sir Keir, saying he could not deliver the socialist policies the country needs.

The move does not affect the larger Camberwell and Peckham CLP, and will have likely been passed by a small group of members.

Responding to the news on social media, one person quips drily: “I’m sure he’s quaking in his boots at this news.”

The SE1 flat is up for a cool £7.85m on the Albert Embankment - and part of the reason for its hefty price tag is because it has a separate entry for the owner to have staff.

The fourth bedroom in the property is in its own self-contained unit, meaning it can be used by domestic help, says the developer, the St James Group.

“So if you did have staff, it would work, but it could also be a study or a guest suite,” it says.

Council tax cock-up? I live in Iraq

Spare a thought for one frustrated person who has been in contact with Southwark Council to beg them to stop sending him demands for council tax - because he lives in Iraq.

The resident, who lives more than three thousand miles from Southwark, took to Twitter to vent his annoyance.

“You send me a notification every month saying I should be paying council tax. I live in Iraq, not your borough,” he told officials.

“I’ve emailed your staff 4 times seeking more information.” Council officials are now investigating.

Meanwhile, in Labour news, one local branch appears unconvinced about the new regime of party leader, Sir Keir Starmer.

Philip Ridley’s darkly comic new play The Poltergeist is about art, family, memory...and being haunted by the life we never lived.

Following the five star critical success of the live streaming of The Poltergeist during the second lockdown in November, Tramp are delighted to announce that, for a limited season only, this ground-breaking work will be available to view online via the Southwark Playhouse website, in partnership with streaming service Stream Theatre.

Widely considered to be one of the greatest living British writers, Philip Ridley’s previous plays include The Fastest Clock in the Universe, Radiant Vermin, The Pitchfork Disney, Tender Napalm, Dark Vanilla Jungle, and Mercury Fur, as well as the screenplay for the 1990 film The Krays.

Tramp returned to Southwark Playhouse with The Poltergeist in November for three performances

following the postponement at the start of 2020 of Philip Ridley’s The Beast of Blue Yonder. Shortly before the first performance the UK Government announced a second lockdown across the country. Rather than cancel the show, Tramp, Philip Ridley and actor Joseph Potter decided to continue without an audience in the theatre and to live stream each performance.

The result was a phenomenal success that received almost entirely five-star reviews across the board.

Jack Silver, Artistic Director of Tramp, said: “I’m so excited to be able to bring The Poltergeist to a wider audience after its success in November.

“It’s a major new play by one of Britain’s major playwrights: funny, moving, and, as always with Ridley, full of surprises. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice works its magic to beat Covid

‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’, by Richard Hough and Ben Morales Frost, directed by Charlotte Westenra (‘The Wicker Husband’, Watermill, ‘I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change’ Chiswick Playhouse), will now be available from Tuesday 26 January until Sunday 14 February, 2021.

Producer James Seabright said: “We are sorry not to be able to present this wonderful new show to audiences as planned at Southwark Playhouse, but we are going to film it in the venue next week with broadcast quality cameras and then premiere it online.

“I commissioned it five years ago, and have loved developing it since then through a series of workshops and a West End concert presentation of an earlier version in 2017, which led to the invitation from Southwark Playhouse to premiere the show at their venue this month.

“I decided to press ahead with these plans with rehearsals up to Christmas and fit up and get-in since New Year despite the challenges presented by doing so during the COVID-19 pandemic, as I think this magical story of renewal and the importance of family is especially timely.

Danny Jull Passed suddenly 11th December 2020 at his home The funeral will take place on Friday 15th January 2021 The cortege will be arriving at the house in Rotherhithe Street at 11:30 The funeral cortege will depart about 12:30 and pass the Ship and Whale Pub Gulliver Street before making its way to St Marys Church Rotherhithe for a service at 1pm.

The procession will depart church about 1:45pm and stop at the Ship Pub in St Marychurch Street.

The procession will then proceed to Millwall for 2:15 pm The cremation service will be at Honor Oak Crematorium at 2:30 pm Due to the current climate the services are restricted to just 30 people so the family politely ask if you wish to pay your respects to do so at either of these points on the route and please respect social distancing.

They hope, when this pandemic is over and things return to some normality, to celebrate Danny’s life in the way he would have wanted.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett held talks with Frank Fielding over his future – before handing the goalkeeper his first start in almost a year-and-a-half last weekend.

Fielding, 32, had played just 43 minutes of senior competitive action for Millwall before he kept a clean sheet in the 2-0 FA Cup third-round win at Boreham Wood last Saturday.

It was his first appearance in 525 days after he had torn his quad on his debut against Preston in August 2019, following his move from Bristol City.

Former England call-up Fielding is hugely popular at the training ground, with his work ethic, attitude and fortitude given his long spell out – he suffered a long-term arm injury after returning to training last January – admired by his team-mates and by the staff.

Fielding is set to play against his former club Bristol City in the fourth round of the FA Cup, but beyond that his long-term future is uncertain with Bart Bialkowski giving little indication he’s about to relinquish his first-team shirt.

Rowett would like to keep Fielding, but recognises the goalkeeper could seek first-team football elsewhere in the summer.

“I had that exact conversation with Frank recently, just to try and gauge to where his head’s at,” Rowett told the News.

Frank Fielding in action for the first time in 525 days “And he was quite adamant. He loves it at the club, he realises that a lot of people at the club have supported him when he’s had those troubles through injury.

“He’s just desperate to keep healthy, keep fit, keep training and enjoy his football.

“Saturday was a little reward in some ways after he was out for so long and having a good attitude.

“But what you also saw during the game is that he’s an excellent goalkeeper. He’s played at a very good level and he’s one we trust.

“At the moment it’s just nice to give

him the opportunity to get out there.

“Bart hasn’t given him that chance to get in the team because Bart’s performances have been excellent.

“He’s a good character, Frankie, and it was good for him to get out there to feel normal after a long time of wretched luck.”

Senior players Hayden Muller and George Alexander started for Kevin Nugent’s side as the Lions maintained their place on top of the South section table.

Millwall had won five of their previous six games, but couldn’t break down their hosts who kept a first clean sheet in the league in twelve games this season.

Sean O’Brien had the first chance to put Millwall in front, but Jamie Searle saved his free-kick.

The Swans had their first effort on goal when Morgan Clarke headed wide after Jordan Gilmore had parried Matthew Blake’s cross into his path.

The Lions were the more dangerous side. Nana Boateng found Abdul Abdulmalik who shot just wide, before Joe Lewis cleared off the line from Alexander late in the first half.

Dan Moss had the ball in the net after brilliant work from Abdulmalik, but it was ruled out for offside.

Millwall looked the more likely to claim the win in the last 20 minutes.

Alexander shot just wide from Boateng’s cut-back, and then Searle did well to hold on to Alexander’s low effort.

The Swansea goalkeeper denied Moss from point-blank range with twelve minutes left, as the hosts just managed to hang on to end a run of four consecutive defeats.

Millwall’s next game is at home to Ipswich on January 18.

By Jake Sanders at Meadow Park johnk@southwarknews.co.uk AFTER A poor run of Championship results that had seen Millwall go from top-six contenders to nervously peeking over their shoulders, an FA Cup third-round trip to Non-League opposition perhaps wasn’t high on Gary Rowett’s priority list.

However, the team the Lions boss sent out at Meadow Park to face a Boreham Wood outfit that had managed five wins on the bounce, made light of that concern.

Millwall had more than 1,500 professional appearances in their starting XI – with the youthful pair of Danny McNamara, fresh from his loan spell at

St Johnstone, and Tyler Burey, making his first start since joining from AFC Wimbledon back in 2019, the only two non-regulars that Rowett selected.

The FA Cup is often used to give opportunities to fringe players, but after the Lions’ wretched recent form, the Millwall boss needed a result to restore some much-needed confidence with games coming at an intense rate in the coming weeks.

In fact, seven of the eleven players that ended the defeat to Coventry City seven days earlier, started the game in

Hertfordshire. .

Millwall didn’t start like a team that had managed only eight goals in thirteen matches, collecting just ten points in that period.

It didn’t come as much of a surprise when Kenneth Zohore, back in the starting line-up after more than two months out injured, lashed the visitors into a 31st-minute lead. The striker owed a great deal to two other loanees in Troy Parrott and Scott Malone, who carved out the chance for the on-loan West Brom man, the latter showing great awareness

to find the Dane.

The only blot on the Lions’ first-half copybook was the fact they didn’t head into the break with more than one foot in the fourth round.

Parrott, still waiting for his first professional goal, was guilty of failing to test Nathan Ashmore on more than one occasion. Ryan Leonard and Burey were both denied by Wood’s impressive goalkeeper, who after further second-half reflex saves was named the official man of the match.

And Millwall could have been made to pay for their bluntness in front of goal but Matt Rhead somehow fired over from point-blank range.

That glaring chance was the wakeup call that Rowett’s side required, and the Lions chief sent on both Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Tom Bradshaw in search of that crucial second, It had the desired effect, and the south Londoners ensured they would be appearing in the fourth-round draw for a fifth consecutive time – something they had never previously managed – by doubling their advantage.

Malone was once again the architect.

This time the Derby loanee picked out Shaun Hutchinson from a corner, and the defender powered home his first of the season from close range. With no fans present, captain Alex Pearce’s cry of ‘Hutchy boy!’ echoed around the ground.

This was Millwall’s 34th victory in the FA Cup since the season they reached the final in 2003-04, which is more than Liverpool and the same as Tottenham.

Focus now switches back to the league and an intense run until the next round.

The league remains the priority over a cup run, but as Neil Harris showed more than once during his tenure, both are possible.

Millwall boss eyes chance for Cup run

Millwall take on their Championship rivals on January 23, one of eight games the Lions have to pack into this month.

It means the likes of Frank Fielding, Danny McNamara and Tyler Burey are likely to start against the Robins for the right to face Sheffield United or Plymouth in the fifth round.

That trio impressed in the 2-0 win at

National League Boreham Wood last weekend.

Rowett was asked where the competition lies in his priorities, given that there is no opportunity this season for a draw against a Premier League side and a bumper FA Cup crowd at The Den. “I saw Saturday as I wanted to win the game and I wanted to put a strong side out to do that,” Rowett said.

“You’ve always got half an eye on where we can give a young player an opportunity or a player an opportunity.

“But Saturday wasn’t picked on the basis of making eight changes just to give people games. It was about getting a strong side out there that we thought could win the game and get through.

“I think the next round is slightly different, we want to get through and have a cup run which I know the club has always prided itself on.

“But the next game will come off the back of about five games back-to-back, five Saturday-Tuesdays almost.

“So there will be a slightly different approach where we need to freshen up one or two areas.

“My concern really is rather than get a big club at The Den – because there’s no benefit to that, really, with no fans – is let’s get ties that we’ve got a really good chance of getting through. That’s the main focus.

“It could be a positive run in the cup, something we use for a different reason.”

MATT SMITH came to the rescue for Millwall as he scored with his first touch on Tuesday night to earn the Lions a point at Bournemouth.

Smith had been on the field just seconds as a 79th-minute replacement for Alex Pearce when he reacted to Jake Cooper’s header to level at the Vitality Stadium with his fourth goal of the season.

Centre-forward Smith, 31, is out of contract at the end of this season and has yet to hear from the club about a potential new deal, but this was another reminder of the value that he can offer.

The man his team-mates affectionately know as ‘Smudge’ was Millwall’s top scorer last season – a career-high fourteen goals as a Championship player – but hasn’t been a regular in this campaign, with six players all capable of filling that central striker role.

Manager Gary Rowett denied afterwards it was a genius move to bring Smith on, joking he was wondering what the striker was doing so far away from Shaun Hutchinson’s initial delivery.

But Smith has a knack of knowing where space might open up and if he gets a chance he usually finishes it.

It was no more than Millwall deserved. Their tactical set-up was excellent, allowing Bournemouth to have the ball before counter-attacking with pace.

The Cherries may have had almost 70 per cent possession, but Millwall had six shots on target to their opponents’ two, 21 in total compared to eight for Jason Tindall’s side. Considering Bournemouth were the top scorers in the division before this week’s games and only five teams had scored fewer than the Lions, this went against the expected script.

That didn’t look like it was going to be the case two minutes in when David Brooks – whom Bournemouth value at £50million – dribbled through before forcing a save from Bart Bialkowski.

There was a jittery moment when Hutchinson and Bialkowski got in a muddle, the defender’s header back towards his goalkeeper going out for a corner. Pearce’s important block then prevented Junior Stanislas’s effort from going on target.

But Millwall settled into it and should have taken the lead in the 24th minute.

Czech mate as winger Skalak not in plans

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL MANAGER Gary Rowett has appeared to hint that Jiri Skalak’s career with the Lions is all but over.

Skalak, 28, has started just one league game for Millwall this season, the 0-0 draw at Birmingham on November 28.

That’s one of just three league appearances in this campaign, the other two substitute cameos in which he played a total of seven minutes.

Czech Republic international Skalak didn’t even make the bench for last Saturday’s FA Cup third-round win at Boreham Wood, despite Rowett resting a number of firstteam players.

Skalak joined Millwall from Brighton in the summer of 2018 for a fee of just under £1million, but he has started only nine league games in two-and-a-half seasons Rowett confirmed Skalak is not injured

and again praised him for his work ethic despite his lack of game-time.

“Jiri’s fit, he’s available. He’s trained really, really well. He’s another whose attitude has been incredible considering he’s not played much football,” Rowett said.

“But, at some point as a club, we’ve got to accept that we have to prepare not just for now but also for the long term.

“Jiri understands the situation he’s been in. He’s been brilliant, I have to say he’s been excellent. His attitude, everything, the way he’s trained.

“He’s still working hard with the group.”

Meanwhile, Millwall’s Championship fixture at home to Norwich City will now take place on Tuesday, February 2 kicking off at 7pm.

The teams were originally scheduled to meet on Saturday, January 23, but both made it through to the fourth round of the FA Cup, meaning it had to be moved.

Millwall will confirm live streaming details ahead of the fixture.

Jefferson Lerma then headed Cooper’s looping header off the line before Wallace tested Begovic with a low free-kick after Ryan Leonard had been fouled, and Scott Malone couldn’t send the rebound on target.

The hosts went ahead completely against the run of play in first-half added-time when Stanislas set up Dominic Solanke who beat Bialkowski to score his tenth goal of the season.

It threatened to be another frustrating evening for Millwall as Tindall’s side dominated possession in the second half.

Especially when Kenneth Zohore’s low free-kick crashed back across the face of goal off Begovic’s left-hand post and was cleared to safety.

Rowett gambled, making a triple substitution with Mason Bennett and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson also coming on and Millwall switching to a back four.

Seconds later there didn’t appear to be a whole lot of danger for the home

side when Hutchinson’s free-kick from his own half dropped outside the box. But Cooper climbed and got lots of power on his header, Smith cleverly running behind Bournemouth’s defence to get to the ball just before Begovic.

There was one more good chance in the game when substitute Josh King’s shot went just past Bialkowski’s lefthand post. Had it crept in it would have been hugely unjust on the visitors.

The point means that it is now just one win in fourteen league games for Millwall. But there was plenty to be positive about, not least an assured league debut for Danny McNamara four days after his first senior game for his boyhood club.

Gary Rowett was asked after the game whether this was a “turning point” and he must be sick of the phrase. There have been so many of them this season that heads must be spinning.

But performances like this indicate that the Lions should be looking up the table rather than worrying what’s over their shoulders.

After 22 games this season, Millwall are in a remarkably similar position to 2017-18, when they also had 26 points and were eleven points off sixth.

No one should need reminding what happened then, when after a 3-0 defeat to Rowett’s Derby Neil Harris’ ide lost just once more in the next 20 games including a seventeen-match unbeaten run to go sixth with four games left.

That did feel like a one-off run, though, and it’s hard to see something like it happening this season. The Lions had such a settled side that season, and almost everything they touched turned to gold in the new year before they fell just short.

Still, with everything that’s going on away from football at the moment, at least we can still dream.

Storm clouds linger

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk THERE IS a sense of déjà vu for Millwall this weekend as they travel to take on Nottingham Forest – the last match they played before football’s suspension last March.

Little did the 27,307 supporters packed into the ground that Friday night realise that after more than ten months they would still not be allowed to watch their teams live.

It almost feels like another era when Matt Smith scored a hat-trick and paraded the match ball around the City Ground as 700 away fans thrilled in seeing their team enhance their top-six credentials.

Days later, it was confirmed that Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis had tested positive for Covid-19, and as the Lions were preparing to face Derby at The Den the government announced the suspension of leagues.

Now, the spectre of another suspension hangs over football. Lions boss Gary Rowett hopes that doesn’t happen.

“We’ve got strict protocols. We’ve just brought back in twice-weekly testing. I hope we’re not in that situation,” Rowett said.

“However, I have said to numerous people publicly it is a worrying time. We’ve had players and their families that have been affected in quite a bad way.

“Sometimes you have to look past football and past elite sport and say should we still be playing when the whole country is in lockdown?

“I don’t know the answer, it’s not really for me to find that answer out.

“But of course it is a worrying situation.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett has insisted the club are working hard on “good targets” in this transfer window – and stressed he ideally wants to avoid recruiting players on loan.

The Lions have targeted midfield and attack as the priority areas in January, but would do more business if they can move players on permanently or on loan.

Ben Thompson and Jiri Skalak are two players who could depart this month if suitable offers come in, which would free up space and funds in Millwall’s squad.

Rowett is happy with his defensive options, with Danny McNamara now a real option on the right side of the defence after his return from his loan at St Johstone and senior debut last weekend.

Rowett feels his side need more of a goal threat from central midfield, but admitted Millwall are slightly at the mercy of bigger clubs signing players before sanctioning departures.

“With some signings that is probably the case. And with some signings if you want to do them quickly then you have to overpay a little bit,” Rowett said.

“There’s no easy way to get deals done quickly in this window.

Sometimes you can get loan deals done but we’ve already got a significant amount of loan players.

“I don’t really want to add to that if

I don’t have to.

“It’s a difficult window. We want to get signings done early, but like most windows unfortunately you have to sometimes be patient.

“And then even when you are patient sometimes you still don’t get those players.

“We’ve got some good targets, we’re in the market for some good players. But it’s the usual challenge whether we can get some of those deals over the line.”

At the time of writing, the immediate future of striker Kenneth Zohore was up in the air.

Earlier this week, Millwall had yet to speak to West Brom about potentially extending Zohore’s loan deal until the end of the season.

West Brom manager Sam Allardyce is desperate for firepower in this window with his side in a relegation battle.

It remains to be seen whether he thinks Zohore could help their survival bid, as Millwall waited to make their own decision whether to pursue an extension bid.

The last scheduled game of Zohore’s initial loan agreement is at Nottingham Forest at the City Ground this Saturday.

Rowett said: “We haven’t had anything definitive from West Brom, and also we haven’t made a definitive decision ourselves.

“That will rumble on until the weekend, I think.”

The Lions want an all-round central midfielder in this transfer window who can provide a goal threat, and have identified Campbell has potentially fitting that idea.

Despite being just 22, Campbell has played 142 times for the club and scored thirteen goals.

It’s Campbell’s fifth full season as a senior professional, after his debut as an eighteen-year-old in October 2018.

Campbell is a combative midfielder, capable of playing in a two-man combination with energy to get around the pitch. He has scored twice in 22 appearances this season.

That has attracted interest from a number of clubs, with Stoke City – whose head of recruitment is Alex Aldridge, who had the same role at Millwall – also credited with interest in Campbell.

Campbell has 24 caps for Scotland’s under-21 side, and is being tipped for a senior call-up.

Meanwhile, there is still doubt over the future of Lions midfielder Ben Thompson.

Thompson, 25, was given just three minutes as a substitute against Boreham Wood last weekend, when youngsters Danny McNamara and Tyler Burey were handed starts.

Portsmouth tried to sign Thompson in the last transfer window, but that move depended on Millwall recruiting a midfielder. The Lions wanted Jayson Molumby, but the Ireland international decided to stay and fight for his place at Brighton. Molumby has since joined Preston on loan.

If Millwall sign a midfielder in this window, then Thompson – who scored the first goal of Gary Rowett’s reign – could be allowed to leave.
