Debated in the House of Commons on Wednesday, December 30, just days after being announced by Boris Johnson, the UKEU trade deal was passed by a majority of 448.

The Labour leader had whipped Labour MPs to support the deal; one he admitted was ‘thin’ but necessary for the country to move forward and avoid the chaos of no deal.

Thirty-seven of Starmer’s MPs defied him including three shadow cabinet members who abstained: Dulwich and West Norwood MP Hayes, Vauxhall’s Eshalomi, and Tonia Antoniazzi, the member for Gower. Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle also abstained.

One Labour MP voted against the bill Streatham MP Bell Ribeiro-Addy.

Coyle said: “Those celebrating today include foreign businesses who have been gifted an advantage over British jobs and our economy.”

Alongside the huge number of jobs not covered by the deal - referencing those in financial services - he said other industries faced new checks and regulatory requirements. “All of that bureaucracy comes at a cost,” he explained.

“I accept that the deal is better than the no deal Brexit which the Prime Minister recklessly threatened, and I will not therefore oppose it.

“But this is the Prime Minister’s deal, a weak and thin Tory deal, the withered fruit of a negotiation conducted in a spirit of bombastic, ideological superiority rather than a spirit of cooperation, collaboration and internationalism.

“A different negotiation would and should have yielded a far better outcome.”

The deal’s key weaknesses include its lack of arrangements for financial services - a key sector in London and the UK economy as a whole - watered-down commitments to workers rights and environmental protections, and the loss of Europeanwide enforcement and data sharing via organisations such as Europol.

The deal has also been rejected by the devolved nations - including Northern Ireland’s DUP. However Harriet Harman, the Camberwell and Peckham MP, was among those to vote for the deal in the absence of a viable alternative before the deadline.

The Old Kent Road is central to the council’s plans to provide 20,000 new homes. However, a large tranche of those homes will only be ‘unlocked’ if the Bakerloo tube line is extended from Elephant and Castle.

Last year, TfL officials admitted the project would be unaffordable in the short term, after having its finances ravaged by the coronavirus pandemic.

A chicken joint in a ‘traditional’ Victorian property has been barred from having a cash machine because it would cause “harm” to the look of the area.

The Chicken Cottage, on Tooley Street near London Bridge, had been refused a cash machine by Southwark planning officials in June, alongside with advertising to promote the machine.

Officials had argued that the cash machine at the chicken shop would “appear obtrusive and unsympathetic to the character and appearance of the late Victorian building.”

The cash machine operator appealed against the decision, but again lost in a decision published last month.

The planning inspectorate’s RE Jones upheld the decision that a cash machine would be out of character for the wider Tooley Street area - despite

there being ATMs over the road.

“The ground floor is occupied by a fast-food outlet that incorporates a largely glazed modern shopfront with a central entrance,” said the inspector, adding: “The appeal building as a whole, makes a positive contribution to the significance of the [conservation area].”

“The ATM installation and signage would obstruct the existing clear view towards the back of the takeaway.

“Its off-centre position to the left of the entrance would also appear jarring against the coherent arrangement of the upper floor windows.”

The machine operator had argued that there were cash machines outside the opposite Tesco Metro, meaning they too should be allowed one.

This was rejected by the inspector.

In addition, the inspector noted that according to the council, a large sign brandishing the Chicken Cottage name and logo in the window had not been given permission.

King’s cancelled urgent cancer surgery, daily cases near 700

King’s College Hospital is ‘nearly full’ with fears also growing for Guy’s and St Thomas’ as the number of daily cases in Southwark nearly hit 700 over Christmas.

The surge in infections is now having a knock-on impact on the NHS, with the number of COVID-19 patients exceeding that of the first wave.

On Monday, 6,700 people were treated for COVID-19 in London hospitals - far higher than the 5,201 in April last year.

The same day King’s College cancelled urgent cancer surgery due to the lack of intensive care beds.

Other hospitals have cancelled elective procedures, including Guy’s and St Thomas’, which is believed to be the first time cancer patients have been affected since the second wave of the virus emerged in the autumn.

Speaking with the paper on Tuesday, Southwark Council leader Kieron Williams said he was having ‘very worrying conversations’ with south

east London trusts, and described King’s as ‘nearly full’.

In a statement published yesterday, he said Southwark was at an “extremely serious stage of the pandemic, when hospitals could soon be overwhelmed without our action. NHS workers are facing their toughest time yet and we must support them.”

At Guy’s & St Thomas’, the trust postponed ‘priority two’ surgeries scheduled for early this week;

operations that must be carried out within 28 days after being deemed necessary.

Its intensive care beds are increasingly being taken up by seriously ill COVID-19 patients, leaving insufficient capacity for those coming out of major surgery.

The News understands those whose surgery has been postponed are yet to receive new dates, and staff had annual leave cancelled as the hospital tries to

fill gaps caused by sickness absence.

The Trust has not yet had to send COVID-19 patients elsewhere for treatment after being able to free up extra space to help manage the flow of extra patients. Without these extra beds it also would already be extremely close to reaching maximum capacity.

At the time of going to press, the trust had been unable to confirm whether urgent surgeries at the trust would be postponed in the coming days.

A spokesperson for King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust told this paper: “Due to the large increase in patients being admitted with COVID 19, including those requiring intensive care, we have taken the difficult decision to postpone all elective procedures, with the exception of cases where a delay would cause immediate harm.

“A small number of cancer patients due to be operated on this week have had their surgery postponed, with patients being kept under close review by senior doctors.”

In December King’s had urged patients to avoid A&E unless absolutely necessary, and instead call 111, as its emergency department was ‘extremely busy’.

On December 29, Southwark posted its highest ever daily count of positive tests, with 692 people receiving confirmation they had the virus.

According to the latest available data, published on Tuesday (January 5), 465

people received positive COVID-19 test results in the borough in the previous 24 hours.

Daily cases are now regularly in the hundreds despite being in double digits as recently as early December, when cases doubled every fortnight.

This exponential growth has been attributed to the new, more transmissible, variant of COVID-19 first identified in Kent. The strain is now rampant across London and the southeast of England, and emerging in every region of the UK. At a government briefing on Tuesday, chief medical adviser Professor Chris Whitty said roughly one in 50 people in the country now had the virus, rising to one in thirty in London.

Shockingly, that means more than one million people are currently infected, putting incredible pressure on the NHS. Addressing the nation, Boris Johnson said the number of people now in hospital was 40 per cent higher than during the first wave.

In one ray of light, around a quarter of the priority over-80s group have now had their first dose of the vaccine and the number of deaths is not rising at the same rate as hospitalisations.

This is partly because younger people are being infected, and also because doctors have much more knowledge of the disease - and the best way to treat it - than in March and April last year.

Heartbreak for Camberwell family

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Camberwell family is mourning again after losing a beloved grandfather just months after their other grandfather passed away of Covid.

Family members have paid tributes to keen boxer, John Stanhope (pictured), who was known for running a market stall in Camberwell’s Warner Road.

The 93-year-old sadly passed away on December 30, from a heart attack and was due to celebrate his 94th in January.

“He was 93 turning 94 in January,” said his grandson, Dean. “And he really wanted his letter from the Queen, that was something he always looked forward to.

“When I was a kid, children used to be allowed in the betting shop, and grandad would always take me in with him,” laughed Dean.

John will also be familiar to many in Southwark both as a boxing coach, but also as the owner of a brickyard in Bermondsey.

He was the father of nine children and grandad to over 30 grandchildren and over 30 great grandchildren.

It is the second tragedy to befall the Stanhope family as Dean’s other grandparent, Len Mills, passed away at King’s College Hospital in March.

Family spoke of 87-year-old Len, a retired painter decorator, as “an old school gentleman,” who was always happy. He passed away after testing positive for coronavirus.

‘government fails to engage with council’

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark’s Council leader has criticised the Government’s handling over the coronavirus crisis in recent weeks, saying officials in central government had repeatedly failed to engage with the town hall.

Amid this week’s national lockdown, council boss Cllr Kieron Williams said government had walked away from constructive dialogue with local leaders, despite London being at the epicentre of the new virus strain.

“The most frustrating thing throughout this whole pandemic has been the refusal of Government to work with local leaders to plan the best possible response,” he said.

“We thought we’d got to a better place in September time where we’d work together, but the Government chose to walk away from those arrangements at the end of the last year.”

This lack of local engagement was apparent in the schools’ closure debate, Cllr Williams told the News. “Look, it all could’ve been handled so much better

over the last two weeks. It was clear rates were going up, and that we needed the measures we now have.

“The back and forth on schools must have been incredibly difficult for schools, teachers and parents.”

Originally primary schools in Southwark had been given a delayed start, but not in neighbouring boroughs.

Now all schools - but not nurseries are closed in-person except to children of key workers and vulnerable children.

He later added: “It’s hard to understand how the government got themselves into that place.”

While cases increase - with 724 cases per 100,000 on the latest data in Southwark, 20 per cent higher than the previous week - officials are hoping that swift vaccinations will provide a route out of the crisis.

“I’m confident we can get the vaccine into people’s arms as soon as we get it,” he said. However, while 2,000 doses have been given out in Southwark, the speed of the rollout depends on the supply.

Cllr Williams also urged businesses and residents needing extra support to contact the council.

Video posted of the protesters last Thursday night show them gathered in large numbers outside the hospital, which is treating coronavirus patients.

A junior doctor at the hospital, Dr Matthew Lee, said he was “disgusted but mostly heartbroken.”

Posting the footage online, the accident and emergency doctor said: “Hundreds of maskless, drunk people in huge groups shouting "Covid is a hoax", literally outside the building where hundreds are sick and dying.

“Why do people still not realise the seriousness of this pandemic? I'm disgusted but mostly heartbroken.

“I wish people could see the amount of COVID19 and death in hospitals, and the sacrifices that healthcare workers make.

This week alone has been so tough.”

The message prompted an outpouring of support for St Thomas’ staff, as well as anger at those wrongly claiming Covid is a hoax.

“Thank you for being a hero Matthew.

We are lucky to have you. Those people are a disgrace, but you - you’re magnificent,” said one social media user.

Another added: “I'm absolutely gobsmacked and angry at those people, total covidiots! There's me trying my best to comply with rules and keep myself/ family safe and these numpties do this.

“Beggars belief but unfortunately there's a lot of them in the UK.”

100-strong protest shutdown by police in Rye Lane, Peckham

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A 100-strong lockdown protest in Rye Lane was shut down by police over Christmas, with the organiser facing a potential £10k fine.

The Met was called to Peckham on the afternoon of Sunday, December 27, after reports of a demonstration in breach of tier 4 Covid regulations.

Around 100 people were in attendance, some dancing, while speakers addressed the crowds with megaphones. Officers say the event appeared to have been ‘pre-planned’.

Acting Inspector David Smith, said: “This sort of gathering is specifically prohibited under the Tier 4 restrictions brought in following the recent rapid rise in cases.

“We all have a responsibility to follow the rules, stay at home as much as possible and help stop the rapid spread of COVID-19 in our city.

“Anyone coordinating intentional breaches on this scale should know they risk very significant financial penalties.”

Officers engaged with those taking part in the protest to remind them of their responsibility and the requirement to adhere to the regulations.

The organiser, a 58-year-old man, will be reported for the consideration of a fixed penalty notice of up to £10,000.

Man charged after alleged bomb hoax

Teenager stabbed in ‘group attack’

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A man has been charged with making threats to kill and hoax bomb threats after an an eighthour incident involving armed police on Saturday.

Officers were called to a property on Great Dover Street shortly after 2pm to reports of a disturbance.

Armed police and a negotiator were called to the scene. Some residents were evacuated from nearby properties and surrounding roads closed.

The man charged, Dennis Pettard, 45, appeared in custody at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Monday January 4. Pettard, of Great Dover Street, is also charged with racially aggravated disorderly behaviour with intent to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

Police say there were no injuries reported during the incident, and all those who were evacuated were permitted to return to their homes.

Rape appeal one year on

One year after a woman was raped in Kennington Gardens police are reissuing their appeal.

The woman was targeted by the unknown man who approached her while she was walking in Kennington Park Road on December 29 last year between 2-2.20am.

The victim, who was in her 20s, suffered a head injury during the horrific assault.

Although images of a man captured on CCTV at the time of the incident were subsequently circulated by police and this newspaper, he has not been identified.

DC Gerard Collier Smith, of the Central South Safeguarding Command Unit, said: “This was an atrocious attack on a lone woman who was targeted late at night and subjected to sexual violence.

"One year on, we still need the public’s help to find this attacker. If you recognise the man in the pictures we have released with this appeal, please come forward and speak to us.

“If you have any information, no

matter how insignificant it may seem, it is vital you get in touch. It could lead to a dangerous man being taken off the streets.”

The suspect is described as black, and wearing a dark, three-quarter length coat.

The 24-year-old was taken into custody after a further four sex attacks were reported to police in just three hours on Monday in Walworth and Bermondsey.

Southwark’s top police officer, Ch Supt Colin Wingrove, said the boy fled the attackers and managed to make it home before his mother called the police and took him to hospital.

“He received a slash to his elbow and two small wounds to his back.

His injuries are not life-threatening or life-changing,” said Borough Commander Wingrove.

Four people were hospitalised after a fire broke out in a block of flats near Waterloo on Christmas Day.

Forty firefighters arrived at the block of flats in Barons Place, just before 2am on December 25.

Operators had received a dozen calls reporting the fire. Four people, who had left the Peabody building before the brigade arrived, were taken to

hospital by paramedics. A further four people were helped to safety by crews from Lambeth, Dockhead, Dowgate and Soho.

Half the flat was damaged by the blaze; brought under control by 3.32am. The cause is now under investigation.

Station officer Adam Hills, who was at the scene, said: "On arrival there was quite a lot of smoke in the area and the fire had broken out of the front and back of the building.

"This incident shows just how important it is to have working smoke alarms. When crews arrived, smoke alarms fitted inside the property were sounding, giving the residents the earliest possible warning to the fire.

“You should have working smoke alarms in every room where a fire can start, for example any room where appliances are plugged in, plus a heat alarm in the kitchen and the bathroom. They should be tested regularly.”

‘Sexual assault’ in Forest Hill

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A woman with learning difficulties who went missing last week told police she was sexually assaulted in Forest Hill.

Police are now appealing for anyone who may have seen the victim and the suspect in the area to come forward.

The woman, who is in her 20s, was reported missing during the evening of Sunday, December 27.

She returned home in the early hours of the following day, with an unknown man.

After he had left, she later alleged he had sexually assaulted her after taking her to his flat in Forest Hill, between midnight and 4.30am. It is not known

how they met.

Officers are now trying to trace him.

He is described as a black male of slim build, around 5ft10, and aged between 25-30.

He was reportedly wearing a black coat, black tracksuit bottoms and white trainers.

Officers are keen to hear from anyone who saw a man matching that description walking in the Forest Hill area, with a woman, between midnight and 04:30hrs on Monday, December 28.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting the reference CAD 935/28DEC20.

Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk At the beginning of March Southwark Council’s public safety cabinet member, Evelyn Akoto, criticised the government’s ‘slow response’ to the outbreak, highlighting the number of travellers returning from global COVID-19 hotspots without any kind of checks.

In one of the first editions of our newspaper to focus on the virus, we also reported that Guy’s and St Thomas’ was braced for a rise in cases.

At that point there were no confirmed infections originating in Southwark, but many of the 51 positive patients were being treated in newly created COVID-19 wards at Guy’s and St Thomas’.

A week later face-to-face GP appointments were being suspended and non-urgent operations cancelled as the virus swept across the UK, and close to home, Millwall’s top brass were anxiously awaiting COVID-19 test results after exposure.

By the end of March the situation had escalated. Although COVID-19 cases were worsening by the day, a new ‘Blitz spirit’ had emerged in the borough.

Council leader Peter John told us: “This is war. It’s as simple as that. We have never experienced anything like it in our lifetimes,” warning that any recovery - financial or otherwise would be hard. Three lockdowns and nine months later, his appraisal seems

The same week we ran stories about a proliferation of community Whatsapp groups or ‘mutual aid’, and the new council community hub coordinating voluntary efforts and helping the most vulnerable.

Throughout the year we have made great efforts to highlight our ‘Southwark Angels’ in a new, weekly double page spread dedicated to those who help others.

Those to grace these pages include Rotherhithe’s ‘lockdown sweetheart’ entertaining her estate, the King of Nunhead whose fundraising ‘lock ‘n’ roll’ concerns kept SE15 in good spirits, and the incredible efforts of furloughed workers who turned their hands to making meals for the NHS, and those made redundant or left unable to open

their businesses who pivoted to charity work instead.

Inspired by others’ generosity, and wanting to help other independent, small businesses like us, we also gave away £14,000 of free advertising.

Inevitably there were also those who sought to exploit the global crisis for their own gain. We covered a rise in ‘COVID fraud’ and crimes, including the outrageous case of a ‘bishop’ in Camberwell selling ‘plague protection kits’.

And then there were those who simply wouldn’t follow the rules. The gorgeous weather during lockdown 1 and throughout the summer, after ‘super saturday’ when restrictions were eased, seems like a distant memory.

That period was a nightmare for those living near Burgess Park and having to cope with constant raves and appalling littering as people sought to escape the confines of their homes.

Widespread optimism that things would be ‘back to normal by September’ was gradually replaced by fears that two lockdowns and a new tier system simply wasn’t working.

Southwark had, by April, one of the highest numbers of infections in the country. But this was tiny compared to the figures reported by December once widespread testing was available and the new ‘mutant’ COVID-19 strain identified.

Despite the overwhelming challenges, and ‘COVID fatigue’, our readers helped raise £27,000 to ensure that vulnerable OAPs, many of whom live alone, received Christmas meals and presents.

2020 will always be defined by Coronavirus but, more than that, it will be remembered for the incredible generosity and spirit shown throughout the crisis.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Bus cuts, divisive controlled parking zones, a kaput Tower Bridge, tunnel maintenance, TfL's financial woes, the Rotherhithe ferry kicked into the long grass, and the varying fortunes of the seemingly chimeric Bakerloo Line extension...

Transport has always been a flashpoint in Southwark, but the sweeping road closures imposed in July caused an almost unimaginable furore - especially considering plans for ‘low emission’ or ‘low traffic’ neighbourhoods have been

rumbling on for years.

But the speed and extent to which they were implemented during the summer was unlike anything previously seen, as local and national government sought to help people commute by foot and bike, and ensure social distancing in busy streets.

The huge changes were put in place

by Southwark Council but came as a government directive and were soon all over London - pitting local authorities who disagreed with their neighbour’s layouts against each other.

Meanwhile, residents who woke up to planters blocking off their roads to rubbish collectors, or found themselves

stuck on loop-the-loop missions around Elephant and Castle to try and get onto Walworth Road from Brandon Estate, were furious.

Some of the most vocal opposition has come from traders who were struggling to survive the financial devastation wrought by the pandemic including Melbourne Grove traders in East Dulwich and shopkeepers around Walworth.

There was soon a war of words between those in favour and those against but, most importantly, many more were ultimately in favour of change but had concerns with the implementation rather than wanting to

He stayed in post to coordinate the local authority’s response until September, when Kieron Williams took over.

Ten years after John’s party achieved electoral victory over the local Tory-Lib Dem coalition, Labour continues to consolidate power over all but an outpost of north Southwark where the Lib Dems still hold sway.

John’s legacy will include free school meals, free gym and swim, and some of London’s biggest and most controversial regeneration projects including the Aylesbury and Elephant and Castle town centre. scrap the entire concept.

One trader in Melbourne Grove described the scheme as a ‘blunt instrument’ while residents in Walworth said it had ‘cut the community in half’.

Many residents filmed ambulances and police cars getting ‘stuck’, doing u-turns, and asking for help after encountering unexpected planters in their path.

In September we highlighted one street - Chapter Road - where for three whole months emergency services, including the fire brigade, were still taking wrong turns. It subsequently emerged that the navigation software had not been updated.

Before amendments were made, the first iteration of Walworth’s new layout also caused Walworth Police station huge headaches - something MP Neil Coyle argued should have been ‘wholly obvious’ to the council back in June.

Amid the vitriol online - with readers’ telling the News they were worried about being named and photographed in the paper discussing LENs - it is all too easy to forget that more or less everyone wants less congestion, cleaner air and better public transport.

While businesses, commuters, motorists and cyclists all may feel pitted against each other, all have highlighted that any campaigns to reduce car dependency will continue to fall down without real investment in viable public transport alternatives.

As divisive as the schemes became, a landmark ruling in December was a timely reminder why, regardless of the

Claiming Starmer had nothing like Jess Phillips’ profile, Coyle duly dismissed the then shadow Brexit secretary in January as a ‘comfort blanket’ who wouldn’t take the party far enough in a new direction.

Coyle’s misgivings have since softened.

Despite getting a slap on the wrist in August for rude tweets about the Rule Britannia controversy, and abstaining in December’s key Brexit vote, Coyle has largely praised Starmer’s approach including his handling of the COVID-19 crisis, and the decision to suspend Jeremy Corbyn from the party over his reaction to the landmark anti-Semitism report.

Helen Hayes also could not countenance backing the UK-EU trade deal. The Dulwich and West Norwood MP, along with Vauxhall’s Florence Eshalomi, resigned from her front bench position in protest.

Mayoral election suspended

London’s planned mayoral election in May was cancelled and pushed back until 2021 due to the pandemic.

Two high profile candidates, muchhyped independent Rory Stewart and the Lib Dem’s Siobhan Benita, both subsequently stepped down citing the financial pressures of campaigning for another year.

The poll is still due to go ahead in May of this year - and will certainly be a very different election to its predecessors.

A second inquest into the death of Ella Kissi-Debrah, a nine-year-old who died from a seizure in 2013, ruled air pollution was a contributing factor.

The inquest highlighted the failure of successive governments to tackle illegal pollution levels and educate the public about the dangers. Ella grew up by the South Circular, in Lewisham, one of London’s most polluted roads Scientists have now amassed a body of evidence linking air pollution to diseases beyond heart and lung conditions including cancer, dementia, Parkinson’s and even miscarriage.

The council has admitted the first changes suffered from teething problems, and has continued to make amendments when urgently needed.

In December, at a meeting with residents and business owners in East Dulwich, Cllr Catherine Rose said the council hoped feedback and air monitoring data would help improve the scheme’s hasty implementation into a ‘coherent plan’.

A review is due in June 2021 with amendments expected to be made as soon as this month based on public feedback.

Reliable data on traffic levels and air pollution before and after the schemes, and how it affects the main roads traffic has moved onto, is the missing piece of the puzzle - along with what investment, and when, will be put into public transport.

Waiting lists, hardship and empty homes

NowMedical, whose doctors never meet housing applicants and cannot access their full medical records, had been used in nearly 10,000 cases to help the local authority assess if a person was ‘vulnerable’ enough to be classed as in ‘priority need’ for council housing - costing taxpayers in excess of £250,000 since 2015.

Cllr Kieron Williams admitted the situation wasn’t ‘ideal’ and alternatives were being looked into, after the data was collected by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism.

“As a group, we have come across a number of decisions by Southwark council using NowMedical to deny homeless duties to incredibly vulnerable people struggling with homelessness as well as disabilities and serious medical issues,” one housing activist from Housing Action Southwark and Lambeth, Elizabeth Wyatt, said.

During the first wave of COVID-19, coordination among local authorities across London with City Hall provided hitherto unprecedented support for rough sleepers.

In August we reported that, according to outreach workers, just six people were believed to be still sleeping rough in the borough after nearly 6,000 homeless people across the city were put up in hotels and other emergency accommodation.

Southwark Council had housed around nine per cent of all rough sleepers in London, some 539. As of that month, 420 of them had been moved into longer term accommodation.

Despite these huge efforts, the worsening financial climate has led to a sharp rise in those struggling to pay for essentials.

In April, we reported that there was a tenfold increase in Universal Credit applications by Southwark council home tenants that month.

In October, before the second lockdown loomed, 5,000 were newly out of work in the Bermondsey and Old Southwark constituency alone. 39,200 people were furloughed in June, across the whole of Southwark.

In June we reported that QR4, a contested new council office block opposite Queens Road station that residents had campaigned against for several years, could be scrapped due to the move to working from home and the virus’ impact on Tooley Street’s budget.

The housing cabinet member at the time - Kieron Williams - said: “Given the huge impact of COVID-19 on our communities and the council, it is right that we pause to reconsider how best we can deliver essential services to residents in safe and welcoming surroundings.

“We will be looking at other options for the Queens Road site and will continue to work with residents to develop any new proposals.”

In October, the scheme was officially

Throughout the year, bitterness between developer Delancey and campaigners has shown no signs of abating.

In the lead-up to the centre’s final day, Delancey issued an extraordinary statement claiming lobbying groups were misrepresenting the number of traders without relocation options.

Then, just as contractors were beginning to decommission and make the site ready for the first stages of demolition, Jerry Flynn from the 35% campaign received the news his application to appeal the regeneration scheme’s planning permission previously rejected by a High Court - had been granted for March 2021.

Meanwhile, on the Ledbury Estate a

decision to fully refurbish rather than demolish and rebuild the towers, made in 2018, had to be revisited after further problems came to light during intensive structural surveys.

A poll in November showed a majority of residents now back fully demolishing and rebuilding all four towers due to the extent of work required and its cost. A final ballot is due to be held in March 2021.

2020 saw Southwark Council bought up an extra 280 homes on package A of the Aylesbury regeneration for social housing, and in July, and publish its new ‘social regeneration charter’, dubbed the ten commandments, for Old Kent Road.

In February, Grovesnor’s Biscuit Factory scheme in Bermondsey was approved after an increase in affordable housing. Work has already begun on the £550m scheme.

Meanwhile, In November, a legal bid to overturn the £3.3 billion Canada Water Masterplan was thrown out of court, after being approved by the planning committee in September despite overcrowding fears.

In March, as the pandemic hit, schools were forced to close to all those except the vulnerable and children of key workers.

After the government ordered school closures on March 20, schools in Southwark were forced to swiftly adapt to remote learning for their pupils.

This threw up a number of problems, as we reported on this year, including a lack of internet access and laptops in households.

This caused a number of schools, including Compass School in Rotherhithe and later Comber Grove primary in Camberwell to crowdfund to ensure greater access to laptops for their pupils.

When pupils did return to classes, the Government’s handling of it was slammed as “chaotic” by the then council leader, Peter John.

“It feels like a massive indecision has

taken over at DFE [department for education]. I don’t know who’s to blame but the Secretary of State should take some responsibility,” he told us.

Further criticism was levelled at the Government in the furore over 2020’s GCSE and A-level results.

A new algorithm was designed to ‘predict’ a pupil’s grades after exams were cancelled - which resulted in a swift backlash including in Southwark after pupils were penalised through no fault of their own.

GCSE students were spared the same fate when it came to receiving their results, after the Government U-turned and awarded teacher predicted grades for students instead.

2020 saw a bumper crop of good results from hard-working students despite the pandemic, as we reported in our A-levels and GCSE specials.

But always the pandemic was lurking in the background: Classes were sent home from various school throughout the year after outbreaks.

The development of rapid mass flow-

testing, we revealed in November, began to be used in schools to track those who were asymptomatic.

And as 2020 came to an end, schools were once again in the spotlight. As cases surged, Greenwich Council wrote to all of its schools to urge them to move to online learning.

While a similar move was not replicated in December in Southwark, officials spoke openly about the need to support schools suffering outbreaks.

As 2021 gets underway, expect to see yet more fierce debate about how best to manage our children’s education safely in what has been an extraordinary period.

Long and torturous year for Southwark’s pubs

They were shutdown, then reopened with restrictions - and what is a substantial meal?

Southwark’s hospitality industry has been on the frontline of the pandemic this year, with their doors closed and no idea of when they can reopen.

In March, even before the Government moved towards the first national lockdown, punters were told to stay away from pubs and bars to prevent the spread of disease.

When the order came for Southwark’s boozers to close from PM Boris Johnson days later, it marked the beginning of what has been a long and torturous year for our beloved boozers.

When ‘Super Saturday’ came - July 4, the day pubs were allowed to reopen, it seemed to mark brighter days ahead for the struggling industry.

As the News reported, pubs were forced to put gallons of fresh pints down the drains because of the lockdown.

Publicans told us they were feeling positive about the future. One boozer at the Nag’s Head in Camberwell, Tony, summed it up when he said: “I feel f*****g fantastic, absolutely superb, just to have that little bit of contact again.”

Sadly, it was not to last. As the tiered system came into effect, Southwark boozer’s once again found themselves faced with restrictions.

Initially under tier two in October pubs and bars could serve pints without a meal, meaning traditional wet pubs were still able to operate.

Punters from different households were banned from mixing indoors, but up to six could meet outdoors, sparking

a rush for outdoor seating.

The much-criticised 10pm curfew was introduced, which forced pubs to shut on the dot, despite also being billed for the late night levy.

But tougher rules soon followed, which required pubs to serve a ‘substantial meal’ if they wanted to serve alcohol.

This caused fury among some traditional boozers, who were offered just £1,000 in Government grants to help them survive.

Others, including Whelan’s in Rotherhithe, took to serving microwaveable meals just to keep the doors open.

As the year came to a close, Tier 3 forced pubs to close completely once more - and since then there has been a specially-made ‘Tier 4’ and a national lockdown which stops the sales of takeaway pints.

2020 has been a difficult year for many businesses - few more so than Southwark’s much loved boozers.

Too many lives tragically cut short Vanita Nowell, 68, Peckham Vanita Nowell was found unresponsive at an address in Peckham’s Blakes Road on Sunday, March 8.

Vanita was pronounced dead at the scene by the authorities.

A post-mortem the following week revealed suspicions around her death, with the cause given as head injuries and respiratory failure.

A man, 47, was later charged with Vanita’s murder.

Santiago Lenin Borja Denoso, 45, Walworth Santiago Lenin Borja Donoso died from a head injury on Tuesday, March 31.

He had been involved in an altercation outside of a restaurant on Old Kent Road, Southwark, on Sunday, February 23. Santiago was pushed to the

ground, hitting his head.

His attacker, Jose Adolfo Licona Valladares, 25, of Brixton Hill, Brixton, was later jailed for three years for manslaughter.

Francois Kablan, 19, Borough “Talented footballer” Francois was stabbed to death in Great Dover Street in May. The 19-year-old from Bermondsey, who played for Harlow Reserves died at the scene, at 5:30pm on Wednesday, May 13.

He played for football team Harlow Reserves and scored a hatrick on his last appearance. A trial is due to take place this year.

Jeremy Meneses-Chalarca, 17, Oxford Street Southwark teenager Jeremy was killed

in broad daylight in busy West End’s Oxford Street on August 8.

Police were called to reports of a fight at the busy destination.

Sadly the seventeen-year-old was pronounced dead hours later of a stab wound.

Family members later called for greater stop and search powers in the wake of the tragedy, according to media reports.

Richard Obi, 25, Elephant and Castle Richard was found suffering stab injuries at the estate’s Bramwell House on Tuesday, November 17. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Suvenca Martis of Panmure Court, Sydenham, was charged with his murder. A court hearing is expected to be held in February.

Woman discovers snake hiding in her Henry FEBRUARY: A Bermondsey woman who was looking for a pair of shoes to wear got the shock of her life when she discovered a snake under her hoover in February.

Kasia Radochonska discovered the little snake, which was later called ‘Mavis’, under her Henry hoover.

Kasia told the News she wasn’t scared of Mavis - because at least she wasn’t a spider. Mavis was collected by the RSPCA. It confirmed that the little corn snake would be rehomed if not claimed by her rightful owner.

Biden’s Peckham link

NOVEMBER: Incoming US president Joe Biden has an unusual Southwark link, his great uncle was a Peckham bus driver.

According to Mr Biden’s cousin, Ralph, who lives in Surrey, Arthur Albert Biden was a Peckham bus driver who served on the Western Front in WW1.

He drove buses on the routes to Eltham.

Ralph, Mr Biden’s cousin, was unaware of his family connections to the new President until being contacted by reporters - and had said that Mr Biden was “too old for the job.”

Officers in the Violent Crime Taskforce (VCTF) were on patrol in Silwood Street at around 5.20pm when two people on a moped noticed them and sped off.

The pillion passenger, who had his face covered, jumped off the moped and ran off. Cops chased the sixteenyear-old. They say they saw him throw a large knife away.

They arrested him and found the 40cm machete nearby. The 16-yearold boy was arrested on suspicion of possession of a pointed and bladed article and remains in police custody.

A hunt is ongoing to find the moped driver.

REMEMBERING THOSE WHO LEFT US

The heartbreaking stories of coronavirus and the tragic loss of others in a year gripped by death

kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Once the pandemic hit, those who lost their lives to coronavirus were in danger of becoming just faceless statistics charted only on daily briefing graphs.

The true horror of the virus, and what was at stake as Southwark and the country faced a lockdown, could only truly hit home when we saw and heard the individual stories of those families torn apart by the loss of a loved one.

The News featured just some of the people whose lives were cut short

by COVID-19. In April at the height of the pandemic Andy Shelley, Terry Coakley, Kathleen Chaplin, Marguerite Orford and Kayla Williams were no longer just hidden among numbers of COVID deaths. Their names, faces and the stories of how they came to their untimely ends featured in the News, in the hope that people could see just how imperative it was to stay home and save lives.

Then as now hospital deaths and the number of people contracting the virus in London were rising higher and higher.

Despite self-isolating and taking every possible precaution, on day twelve of his lockdown 70-year-old Andy Shelley succumbed to coronavirus - he died a week later alone in St Thomas’ Hospital.

The Irish born great-grandfather, who brought up his family in Bermondsey, living here for past fifty years, had underlying medical issues - but his daughter Michelle says he could not have done any more to protect himself.

Living in Amina Way off St James’s Road with his wife Nora, the pair had received their letters from the NHS telling them that because they suffered from certain conditions they were to self-isolate for twelve weeks.

“Dad was a typical man of his generation and time and enjoyed going out twice a week for a pint, usually to the Old Bank in the Blue, but he was serious about keeping to the rules. We knew this when he was not even tempted to go out for St Patrick’s Day,” Michelle told the News.

Suffering from Parkinson’s disease, COPD and heart problems, Andy knew that he could be in danger, but with three children, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren Michelle said he loved being surrounded by his family and was not going to take any chances.

Unusually at that time his wife and Michelle were able to see him, “but we were all suited and booted with masks.

He perked up again, but an hour and half after we left he died,” Michelle said.

Aged just 34, Terry Coakley’s sudden death shocked friends in Bermondsey, who immediately set about raising money for a plaque and a donation to the doctors and nurses who battled to save him for over two weeks at St Thomas’ Hospital.

His younger sister Toni, who grew up with him on the Longfield Estate, spoke to the News saying: “If you can take anything away from this, it is the need to look after yourselves, protect

yourselves and do as you are told.”

For his mother Joanne and father David, as well as his other brother, also called David, and girlfriend Amy, this tragedy was made all the more heart wrenching as they were not able to hold his hand and sit with him as he battled the pandemic.

Only seeing him through glass, the family were allowed to call as often as they liked and spent the entire two weeks waiting for updates. Toni continued: “You can’t do anything to help. I went around cleaning his flat, getting it ready for when he came home.

Mum had just one video call with the consultant to explain what the machines were for. Mum was able to visit after he passed away, but just briefly. It is all so impersonal. But the doctors and nurses have been fantastic. They tried their very best.”

His father David added: “All we wanted to do was to give him a cuddle and you can’t do that. Everything is on the phone.”

Terry did have asthma, but Toni says it was by no means the worst. He was not taking daily tablets and when he did get ill before what would normally take someone a week to get over it took Terry two. “Terry got access to all the treatments while in intensive care for two weeks and actually died of a heart attack,” Toni explained.

“People need to understand the severity, more and more young people are losing their lives. Once you get coronavirus, because of the high temperature and dehydration you need kidney dialysis, it’s not just your lungs.

“My children have asthma a lot worse, and have to have daily steroids, so as a parent this makes me extremely worried.

Entering my house you shower from head to toe, wash with Dettol. I can’t risk it. Some people have said that it is extreme but I say I have lost my brother.”

Even for those who did not die from coronavirus the lockdown prevented grieving families from giving their loved ones the funeral they deserved.

In April tributes were paid from over the world to an old-school Bermondsey gentleman who passed away aged 91.

Bill Brenland was well-known around Bermondsey’s Blue, where he had lived for nearly five decades before sadly passing away from pneumonia.

But he was known further afield too, for videos on local history on YouTube, which his daughter Sally uploaded for him.

Bill was born in 1928, and had his formative years during the war. Like many of that generation, he knew tragedy as a result of the Blitz.

On the first day of the bombing, Bill had been out playing outdoors with his sister. His father went looking for him

but was forced to shelter inside Keeton’s Road School. The school took a direct hit - and Bill’s dad was among those killed.

Sadly, because of the coronavirus pandemic, only ten people were allowed to attend Bill’s funeral on April 9, with others watching over the internet.

“I would’ve given him the biggest funeral Bermondsey has ever seen, but because of the circumstances we weren’t able to,” says Sally.

She placed a plaque to Bill in her home in the New Forest - and a candle she lit in his memory on the day of the funeral has not gone out.

“It’s a life to celebrate, not to mourn,” says Sally. “He was my dad and my best friend. He was a friend to all and an enemy to no-one - proper old school, they don’t make men like that any more.

“He would’ve said: ‘Farewell Bermondsey and Rotherhithe - until we meet again.’”

The situation in care homes brought untold hardship to families across Southwark and beyond. Bermondsey’s Kathleen Chaplin is believed to be one of three people to die in quick succession in her care home from coronavirus and her family had little to no contact as the lockdown stopped them from visiting.

The 91-year-old had been used to seeing her family since she moved into the Riverlee Care and Nursing Home in Blackheath suffering from dementia.

“I would take mum out every couple of days,” her daughter Sally told the News.

“Even with the lockdown we were popping by every three or four days with grapes and whatever mum needed, but we could not see her as it would just upset her. I don’t think she would be able to understand why we were not coming in. And she was not one for FaceTime or Skype. We tried it, but I don’t think the home were prepared for it; and mum, even with the dementia, was old school.”

For Sally and her brother John the only time they got to physically see her was when she was laid to rest, back in Bermondsey at Albins’ funeral home.

“When she was taken into Lewisham Hospital we called two or three times a day. The nurses would tell mum we would be in later. It was heartbreaking,” Sally said. “I just wanted to be there to hold her hand.”

Kathleen was hospitalised once she got a chest infection and after exactly one week she passed away on April 1.

called 999 on Friday, March 20 after she rapidly deteriorated - telling the sole paramedic who arrived that she desperately needed help.

She was advised to rest up and take paracetamol.

The next day her distraught husband found her lifeless in the living room.

“On Friday I got up during the night and I kept watching her. On Saturday morning she was so weak she couldn’t move.

“Later I took her to the bathroom, I put her in the bath and brought her back after, and kept checking on her. I slept for about 20 minutes and when I looked in on her she had died.”

Although neither were tested for COVID-19, medics arrived in full hamzat suits and her medical notes are reported to have listed COVID-19 as the suspected cause of her symptoms.

“Done right it can help those left behind and it brings comfort to those that are dying,” he said.

During the Downing Street briefing he said that the death of Ismail Abdulwahab from Brixton at King’s College Hospital affected him deeply.

“I have been really moved and upset by some of the heartbreaking stories of people dying without a loved one nearby. As the father of a thirteen-yearold myself the reports of Ismail, dying aged thirteen without a parent by his bedside made me weep,” he said.

The change came too late for the family of Marguerite Orford, who lost their mother in March. COVID-19 was listed as a contributing factor to her death in St Thomas’ after she suffered a stroke and complications from other long-term conditions while living in Tower Bridge Care Home In Bermondsey.

She was only meant to stay in the home on a temporary basis after moving in the previous November for rehabilitation for a badly broken bone.

while living in her specially adapted south Bermondsey flat, where she had lived for decades after moving from the demolished old Bonamy Estate.

Although unable to hold her during her illness and last moments they were asked to visit both the hospital and home after her death to collect Marguerite’s belongings.

“If it’s a lockdown, it’s lockdown,” George told the News before health secretary Matt Hancock’s change of heart.

“I don’t understand why you can’t have people visiting a home or hospital if they take sensible precautions but you can have staff traveling in on public transport and going in and out because it’s ‘essential’. It doesn’t make sense.”

In April we also highlighted the tragic events surrounding the death of a Camberwell mum-of-three Kayla Williams, who died from suspected COVID-19 after being refused hospital treatment by paramedics.

Well-wishers set up a fundraising page to help cover the funeral costs for 36-year-old.

Kayla had been unwell for days with a temperature, cough and stomach pains when she was told she was not an urgent enough case for hospital treatment.

Tributes were paid to a ‘smiley and bubbly’ Bermondsey man who sadly died of a sudden pulmonary ebolism, leaving his fiancee and seven-year-old daughter devastated.

JR and fiancee, Lisa Burgess had been working in childcare together, before his career took a separate path. “We were both in child care, we got on so well and then we got together - that was nearly ten years ago,” Lisa said.

JR popped the question on February 13 2019, but tragically, before the big day could arrive, he fell ill suddenly.

Arrangements for the wedding had not yet been made, his loving fiancee told the News. “Because we’re young, you just think, ‘We’ve got our whole life, so that can come later,’” she said.

The former Mayoress of Southwark Cleo Arnes sadly died of cancer aged just 40.

Holding the mayoress post at Southwark Council between 2006/7, she was remembered by her colleagues for bringing “a sense of youth and glamour” to the role.

She was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, a type of blood cancer, five years ago, and had been receiving treatment, but passed away in August.

2020 was a year of double tragedy for the Charter School in Dulwich after Karla Pappon, an assistant special educational needs coordinator passed away in October.

She was involved in an accident during a London to Brighton sponsored ride with nineteen other members of staff in September, held in honour of a former student, head girl Ruby Fuller, 18, who died in May from leukaemia.

More than £15,000 was raised towards research into new blood cancer treatments in memory of Ruby.

A critical care doctor and a former midwife from King’s College Hospital have received New Year’s honours from the Queen.

Cllr Barrie Hargrove was on hand to ensure the parcels were given the members of Southwark Pensioners Centre, based in Camberwell, on Christmas Eve. All of those to receive hampers are unable to shop for themselves and facing Christmas alone.

Dr Tom Best, King’s clinical director for critical care, was awarded an MBE for services to critical care, particularly for his work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He featured in the Channel 4 documentary Surviving Covid and is credited by the trust with being instrumental in ensuring the hospital could respond to the

high number of patients needing intensive care during the first wave of the pandemic.

Jill Demilew, a former consultant midwife at King’s, was also recognised in the New Year honours list; for services to midwifery.

During her career, Jill had helped to address health inequalities and improve access to healthcare for the most vulnerable women in south London.

A champion on the ‘continuity of care’ model, Jill’s work means women in south London and across the South West Local Maternity

System have the same group of midwives throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal care.

Professor Clive Kay, King’s Chief Executive, congratulated both.

“All of us at King’s are very proud of Tom and Jill for the hard work and dedication that has led to them being recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours," he said.

"They have made significant contributions in their fields and I’m delighted it has been recognised at a national level.

"Many congratulations to them both.”

Honours’ list recognises the work of those in our NHS

Three members of staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals have been handed gongs in the New Year Honours List.

Midwife Mary Sheridan, junior doctor Dr Azeem Alam, and associate chief pharmacist Paul Tunstell all received the British Empire Medal.

Mary was recognised for her services to midwifery, after noticing up more than 32 years of service at the Trust to date. Since 2011, she has been the lead midwife in a programme which screens babies within 72 hours of birth for a series of conditions.

She also worked during the festive period, examining 44 babies over six days at St Thomas’ Hospital Mary said: “I was so surprised to receive an email saying I’d been nominated for a medal. It’s great that midwifery has been recognised as a profession in the New Year

Honours list.”

Dr Azeem Alam received the BEM for services to medical education during COVID-19.

The 28-year-old founded BiteMedicine, which has provided free medical education for medical students, teaching more than 10,000 students worldwide via online, live webinars.

Dr Alam, who worked in the emergency department during the pandemic, said: “After receiving the initial email that I had been recommended by the Prime Minister for the honour of a British Empire Medal, I was in complete disbelief, and still am.

“I told my family as soon as I was able to and they were equally shocked.

“I am earnestly grateful for the recognition that my work within medical education during COVID-19 has received, and I hope that

Paul Tunstell, from Herne Hill, was recognised for services to the NHS during COVID-19.

Paul led the pharmacy technical services during the pandemic which played a vital role in ensuring sufficient medicines were available.

Paul, who has worked at the hospitals for 31 years, said: “I am delighted to receive this honour in recognition of the role the whole pharmacy department has played in response to COVID 19.

“It's been a privilege to work with such a dedicated and talented team who have adapted to meet the changing needs of patients whilst supporting and caring for each other.

housing association get CBE and MBE from Queen Optivo’s CEO and the chair of the housing association’s resident strategy group have both been given New Year’s honours.

Chief executive Paul Hackett has spent the last ten years reversing the fortunes of the previously failing association. He has been given a CBE from the Queen, while Monica Barnes has been awarded an MBE for her work improving the sector for other residents. The housing association currently has more than 2,000 homes in Southwark.

Paul said: “I’m delighted Monica’s been recognised for her unswerving commitment to ensuring residents’ voices are heard.

“It’s great to see her determination to improving services for others has been recognised. Monica’s a remarkable person who’s dedicated her life to others and this honour is well deserved.

“I’m truly humbled to receive the CBE. This award is a recognition of the hard work of many staff and residents who’ve helped Optivo become the organisation it is today and our efforts

Southwark pensioners were fed free pie ‘n’ mash on Christmas eve thanks to an initiative from five Southwark businesses.

Jamie and Tammy Jukes, from Bermondsey Pie ‘n’ Mash met up with representatives from Millwall Community Scheme, Barry and Steve of the Communications Workers Union to collect the pies from Manze’s pie shop.

The scheme - which was backed by the News - saw volunteers Tara and Wendy assemble the orders at St Paul’s sports-ground in Rotherhithe, before being delivered by volunteers all across Southwark.

One volunteer, Jade Roberts, even added a lottery ticket to the deliveries,

to become a sector-leader in resident involvement.”

Monica described the news as a ‘lovely honour’ and dedicated it to her family and friends. The former Tulse Hill youth worker said: “I’m from Jamaica and lost my own mother aged seven,” she said. “I was brought up by my father and my aunt - my mother’s sister.

“My aunt had an opportunity to come to the UK in 1954 as part of the Windrush generation and took me with her. Housing was a major issue at the time.

“My own personal experiences and being an involved resident at Optivo have helped me fully appreciate the importance of good housing for people’s emotional, social and physical wellbeing.

“As an involved resident, you don’t give up hours of your time to be recognised – you do it because you want to make a difference.

“We’ve all worked hard to improve services over many years, so it’s a real joy to see our work recognised like this."

OVID ruined 2020 for most of us, especially the 70,000 families who lost loved ones.

Many deaths were avoidable if the government had acted swiftly and followed the science. Sadly, ministers delayed decisions leaving families and our economy to pay the price. The UK has spent more, but has the highest excess death toll and worst economic damage of any European country.

Ministers will no doubt try to avoid a public inquiry into how they mishandled the COVID response, not least as they try to keep secret the contracts they signed which paid millions to their friends for services that were not delivered.

Our NHS and other frontline heroes deserve to know the truth about delays and faulty PPE for example, especially as we still see rising infections and hospitalisations in Southwark and across the country.

We also enter 2021 weakened by the downgrade deal signed by the government. Eighty per cent of our economy and jobs were not covered by this sham and the other 20 per cent face new costs and customs checks and delays to trade. The deal neglected to cover security which also means terrorists trying to enter the UK who would have been identifiable under intelligence sharing on New Year’s Eve 2020 could access our borders in January unnoticed. This potentially leads to far greater dangers to the UK. The United Kingdom also faces risks in the rise of Scottish nationalism, dividing our country further, as well as a new border between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The absurdity is that a dog owner in Belfast can now take their pet to Berlin, Budapest or Bulgaria, but not Birmingham!

UK people’s rights, security and our economy are downgraded

by this deal and Theresa May has highlighted that her 2017 deal was better than the one sycophants in the Tory Party tripped over to back a year after Johnson told us Brexit was done in his ‘oven-ready’ lie.

Ironically, the deal concludes nothing. Much of it focuses on the need for further negotiations, including annually on fish quotas. It insists on new negotiations in 2024 which means the debate continues.

2021 will see more discussion of Europe, not less. My role will be speaking up for Southwark people and businesses and improving the deal from its paltry start point.

2020 was extremely challenging but I also had some successes for our community. I helped fix Government loopholes to ensure businesses in Southwark could access funding to cover COVID costs. I helped Southwark cultural institutions access over £7 million in recovery grants. I gained government backing for an amendment to guarantee rights to housing for anyone fleeing domestic abuse. I successfully campaigned to abolish VAT on digital books. I helped win the extension of ‘PrEP’ to prevent HIV transmission. I also worked with the wine and spirits trade association to stop the Government imposing new import forms which would have hit wine prices for all buyers. Not a bad haul of results from the opposition backbenches!

It has also been my joy to work closely with our community in response to COVID. The volunteering of time, items and money to help others through this crisis has been wonderful to witness and does Southwark proud. We are not through this yet though; please keep up the incredible efforts. We cannot have a happy and successful 2021 if people do not continue taking precautions and looking out for one another until we have all had the vaccine.

aking note of things which make you happy is a proven way to lift your spirits, whether it’s keeping a daily ‘gratitude journal’, or making a mental list at bedtime – a tasty meal, winter crocuses spotted on a walk, a phone call with a friend.

Does it work on a larger scale too?

After a year of worry and sadness, we face continuing challenges in 2021. We need coordinated global action to stop the virus and, at the same time, we need to transform transport, homes and jobs to cut our out-of-control carbon habit. Here are three of the green shoots keeping me going in the face of these challenges.

Meat-free is easier than ever. In supermarkets and cafes, vegan options are now normal. You can even enjoy meat-free pie and mash from Manze or Arments in Peckham, Tower Bridge Road or Walworth. People of all ages are talking about reducing the amount of meat they eat, for their own health, for animal welfare or to cut the carbon bill from industrial farming. January – or #Veganuary – is the perfect month to try new ideas, with encouragement from other people via veganuary.com.

Levels of nitrogen dioxide pollution in central London fell by 44% between 2017 and 2020. This shows what can be done through measures like the Low Emission Zone and new, cleaner buses. But nitrogen dioxide is only part of the air pollution problem. There are no safe levels of ‘particulate pollution’ – tiny particles of fuel and tyre dust that lodge in the lungs – and levels in London are still way above World Health Organisation limits. Our next mayor should make sure that every dirty diesel bus in London is replaced, not just those on central routes.

In 2021, the Ultra-Low Emission Zone will be extended to the South Circular – but why not include all of Southwark and extend it to the M25?

Batteries are better. A Southwarkbased team has received a government grant to retrofit polluting black cabs. London has over 11,000 diesel cabs, each travelling on average 30,000 miles a year. Rather than scrapping old taxis, Clipper Cabs will install new electric motors and batteries - a cheaper and more efficient way for this London icon to meet the carbon challenge.

We need to protect lives and the economy

O

ne in thirty people in London now have COVID-19 and, until this week’s lockdown announcement, could have been unknowingly spreading the disease among their colleagues, school friends, fellow commuters, shoppers or gym goers.

Even after a year of horrendous shocks, the latest figures as we begin 2021 are terrifying.

There are now more patients in hospital with COVID-19 than at any other point since the virus was first identified.

And although testing capacity is far higher than during most of 2019, that does not explain how the virus could rampage so quickly across the country.

The new variant is certainly the critical factor in the escalation of the pandemic but it is not the only reason we have been plunged into a third lockdown.

All too often the debate has been divided between two opposing views: saving lives or saving the economy. What seems clearer now is locking down early and hard, and attempting a ‘COVID zero’ approach - whereby the virus is eliminated rather than simply ‘suppressed’ to a lower level - can do both.

Instead of trying completely to drive out the virus, which the government did not think

possible, it focused on bringing levels down.

But community transmission remained far too high at the end of the first lockdown, and was soon out of control in huge areas of the country once the tier system was in force.

A second national lockdown had an impact but that was soon lost once things reopened.

In the meantime, businesses have had the costs of being open, then closed, then open again. That’s before we even get into the schools debacle.

We now have the worst of all worlds: spiralling infections, and a stunted economy with rising unemployment after successive government U-turns.

Just because someone survives COVID it does not mean they are well or even fit to work. Even for the young and healthy it can be a debilitating disease.

In one recent study of more than 3,000 long COVID sufferers, a quarter had been unable to return to work since months later.

The improvements in treatment and care and the vaccine hope on the horizon can help us get through the next few weeks.

But perhaps it is time to stop seeing the debate about the virus as a contest between the economy and saving lives - and instead focus on protecting both.

End of an era at Elephant It’s the end of an era at Elephant and Castle - the Elephant which had a proud perch above the shopping centre has been removed.

The famous Elephant statue is being refurbished and repainted before being moved to Castle Square.

It has been planned in the works since last year, as was due to have taken place in October.

But it still came as a shock to some residents, one of whom posted online at their surprise to see the body of the elephant pass their house in a truck.

Viral Guy’s patient says trust the experts

A Guy’s patient who went viral while having the vaccine is back in the headlines again after receiving his second dose.

A CNN interview with Martin Kenyon outside Guy’s Hospital went viral after he complained that he couldn’t find parking when he went to get his first dose, and joked “there's no point in dying when I've

lived this long, is there?”

Now he has encouraged others to adopt his approach, and view the vaccine as all rather uninteresting.

“It's sensible. Rather like all the injections I've had all the 91 years I've lived,” he told media.

"I don't understand the medical or scientific side of it all - but I do what I'm told and trust the experts.”

Is Supertram full of manure?

The firm behind the Southwark Supertram proposal has been involved in a proposal to see how trains could be powered by literal manure.

Trampower had proposed the tram link from Borough to Elephant and Castle to Camberwell in 2012.

The plan has not yet come to fruition. But according to the Shropshire Star, the firm has now become involved in a consortium to see how trams could be powered by methane, derived from manure.

Does this make the Southwark Supertram proposal likely to be full of dung?

Dulwich Hamlet hit by ‘multiple’ positive tests

The Hamlet said the game against Hampton & Richmond Borough on December 28 was identified as the “most likely” source of the outbreak.

Dulwich had plans to reschedule their game against Maidstone United for Tuesday this week but they had to be shelved. Their fixture against Slough Town this Saturday has been postponed.

Their next scheduled match in National League South is at Billericay Town on Saturday, January 16.

It has been a season as chaos in the division, with some teams having played six more games than others due to multiple postponements.

In a statement, the club said: “After confirming multiple positive tests for Covid-19 within the Dulwich Hamlet squad, the plans to bring forward a fixture against Tonbridge Angels to last Saturday were cancelled, and the upcoming game on Saturday, January 9 against Slough Town has been postponed.

“Plans which were also underway to reschedule an earlier postponed game against Maidstone United for this week have also been cancelled.

“After working closely with the National League our game at Hampton & Richmond Borough on December 28 was identified as the event which was the most likely source of the outbreak and therefore the period of full isolation for the club will extend to all playing and coaching staff in attendance at that game and will run until Friday, January 8.

“The club will then need to observe the mandatory 48 hour window at the end of the isolation period before returning to action, hence the postponement of the Slough Town fixture the following day.

“The return to training and games will be dependent on continuing to track any cases in the playing squad and the safe return of those affected.

“Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves and we send our best to our players who have tested positive, and thank Tonbridge Angels, Maidstone United and Slough Town for their understanding.

“We would also like to thank the medical and safety officials at the National League for their quick and effective response.”

“I love St Johnstone, I was up there for six months and learned a lot. Callum Davidson put a lot of trust in me to start me, and obviously I gave him the trust back by putting in good performances.

“The area was great, the lads were class and the standard was very good, too. It was a great experience [playing against Celtic and Rangers], they’re the top two teams.

“Celtic were class, Rangers were a step up again and it’s just a shame there were no fans there. We gave Celtic a good game at Celtic Park. If the fans had been there maybe we would have gone on to win that game. It was a good experience.”

McNamara scored his first senior professional goal, the winner against Kilmarnock in November.

He continued: “It was a very proud moment. I was speaking to Callum before the game and he was saying to me I’ve got to start getting on the scoresheet. Funnily enough in that game I scored and it was a special moment for me.

“To be fair, I should have had a couple of goals in the games before that, but it was good to get on the scoresheet.

“Cal was class with me. From the day I came in he said to me, ‘you’re going to play, and obviously you’ve just got to keep the shirt’. Fortunately enough

I kept the shirt and played every game under Cal. “Cal got the best out of me. I wasn’t used to playing wing-back, at Newport I didn’t play wing-back. Coming here and playing wing-back probably suited me down to the ground, getting up and down with lots of energy.”

McNamara settled well in the Perth area beside the River Tay. “Because of lockdown we couldn’t really go anywhere,” he said. “But Perth was lovely, I had lovely neighbours.

They looked after me, cooked me some food of an evening and stuff.

“But it was freezing, I come back down here and it’s warm compared to Scotland!”

McNamara could make his senior Millwall debut in the third round of the FA Cup this Saturday.

“I’ve come back and I just want to try and give my all and show the gaffer that I can play for Millwall,” he said.

“Saturday is a massive chance for me if I do get given the opportunity.

“If I do get my chance I’ll give it 100 per cent and hopefully we can get a result on Saturday. Millwall is my boyhood club so to play for Millwall would be a dream.

“If I get that chance hopefully I can take it and try and cement my position in the team.”

FORMER MILLWALL assistant manager Callum Davidson backed “top-quality” James Brown to be a success at St Johnstone as he outlined the qualities he believes the right-back will add to his squad.

DANNY MCNAMARA got the perfect early Christmas gift – admitting he was “buzzing” when he heard the news he was being recalled by his boyhood club.

Brown, 22, joined the Saints this week as a replacement for Danny McNamara, who was recalled by the Lions this month and could be given a senior Millwall debut at Boreham Wood this weekend.

McNamara played 22 times for the Scottish Premiership side this season, scoring his first goal in senior professional football against Kilmarnock.

Brown had to return a negative Covid-19 test before starting training with his new team-mates. It is his second spell in Scotland after he was on loan briefly at Livingston in 2018.

Brown – who will turn 23 on January 12 – could make his Saints debut in Saturday’s Tayside derby against Dundee United.

“He is a top quality right-back,” Davidson told the Daily Record. “I’m pleased I managed to get him as soon as I knew Danny was getting called back.

James Brown “He has played at Carlisle and has quality in attack with a great final ball.

He does like to get forward and his use of the ball is good.

“He is quick and can defend one-onone as well. Hopefully he comes in, starts well and keeps flying.

“I think he is a player that will get better and better. Danny came in and hit the ground running. James has got to do the same.

“I probably saw more of James than I did of Danny when I was at Millwall.

He was with the first team training and involved with the squad.

“Opportunities to go and play football are massive for younger players. St Johnstone can give him a platform to do better things.

“He has been training for the full season so we have no issues with his fitness.”

McNamara, 22, joined St Johnstone on a season-long loan but did so well he was brought back this month and is expected to challenge for a first-team place.

He was in regular contact with Millwall midfielder Shaun Williams, one of whose new responsibilities in his player-coach role is to provide feedback to loan players.

Sidcup-born McNamara flourished under former Millwall assistant Callum Davidson, before he got the call from the Lions that they wanted him back.

“I was speaking to Millwall throughout my loan, speaking to Shaun Williams quite a lot,” McNamara said in an interview on Millwall’s official website. “I found out about it probably a week before Christmas, I was told they were going to recall me.

“When I found out I was buzzing, to come back to play for your club was just nothing but positive news for me.

It was a good bit of news to hear before Christmas.

Lions suffer after enforced break as Coventry breeze to three points

By Lucas Ball at The Den sport@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL PUT in arguably their worst display of the season as they were deservedly beaten 2-1 by Coventry in their first game of 2021, as their winless home run extended to eight Championship matches.

Gary Rowett’s side were back in action for the first time since December 19, the week a number of players in the squad returned positive tests for Covid-19. That resulted in the closing of the training ground and some players going into last weekend’s game after limited work.

The Sky Blues were deserving winners and the Lions were lucky they only lost by one goal, after goalkeeper Bart Bialkowski had come to the rescue for the hosts on numerous occasions.

Bialkowski’s display proved once more that he is one of the best stoppers in the division, the Pole one of the few players unaffected by the two-week break between fixtures and the lack of training.

Other key players were below-par, though a drop-off had to be expected after eight squad members had to selfisolate, reducing Millwall’s preparation time ahead of this game.

Nonetheless, it means their wait for a

second home league win of the season goes on, with Rowett needing to find a working formula to turn that worrying form around.

Millwall appointed former Birmingham head scout Harvey Bussell as recruitment chief last week. That will ease the workload on Rowett, who will be glad to be able to more fully focus on coaching rather than than having to make and field calls from agents and clubs over players.

There is no doubt that Millwall lack quality in some areas to affect games enough, or that their squad isn’t as deep as they would like. The latter is a factor of finances, though.

Danny McNamara has been recalled from St Johnstone to provide competition for Mahlon Romeo at right-back. Millwall would also like to add an all-round midfielder who can contribute to the attack, and another forward.

Saturday once more showed that there is a reliance on Ryan Leonard in midfield.

He wasn’t fit enough to contribute against Mark Robins’ side, and his energy was missed.

Ryan Woods and Shaun Williams were too passive, and also offered little in the way of support for Millwall’s attacking players, leaving the quartet of Jed Wallace, Mason Bennett, Tom Bradshaw

and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson isolated against Coventry’s well-drilled back five.

Rowett will hope that Billy Mitchell can provide another option, but the Lions could be forced into the market in that area this month as the youngster is still some way from returning from a second hamstring injury this season.

Millwall have been unfortunate that their two marquee attacking signings have both missed large chunks of the season through injury, though both Troy Parrott and Kenneth Zohore did provide positive impacts off the bench last Saturday.

Zohore showed his quality and ability to hold up the ball in his short time on the pitch. Parrott put in his best display in a Lions shirt with a number of smart touches and passes as well as some intelligent runs in behind the defence.

He spun on Woods’ pass and was fouled

by Dom Hyam with sixteen minutes left.

Jed Wallace scored the penalty, his sixth of the season.

It was only a consolation, Millwall’s misery compounded when Murray Wallace was sent off after a second booking in injury-time.

Millwall were two goals down by the 26th minute, both goals summing up the down-on-their-luck feeling at the

moment. First, Jordan Shipley’s shot in the 20th minute came back off the post before going in off the knee of Jake Cooper.

Six minutes later, Gustavo Hamer’s freekick fell perfectly back to him off the wall, his shot then deflecting in off Cooper.

Millwall are getting nothing like that fortune in attack recently. They have a decision to make on Zohore, as well as a conversation with West Brom who will ultimately control where the striker’s immediate future lies. Whatever is agreed, it would be a gamble to extend the deal, though if he stays fit he has shown he could be what the Lions need in the second half of the season.

Parrott has had a tough spell, but in the last two games he has shown glimpses of what he can offer the team.

It’s hard not to conclude this could be the most crucial transfer window in the last few seasons. The Lions are heading in the wrong direction in the Championship, and last Saturday underlined the need for fresh impetus.

Even if they get the signings they want, a play-off challenge which was expected this season and demanded by Rowett looks some way from being a reality.

They have a lot of work to do on and off the pitch to change that perception.

Tom Bradshaw battles for possession against Coventry last weekend

TOM BRADSHAW insists the Millwall squad have the “character” and “belief” that they can get through their most difficult spell of the season.

Last Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Coventry at The Den dropped the Lions to seventeenth in the Championship table, six points above the relegation zone and twelve off sixth.

It’s a run of just one win in thirteen league games, but they showed their resilience before Christmas when they won at Bristol City after ten games without victory, which was their worst sequence for more than seven years. The tenth game was arguably their worst performance of the season, when they were 3-0 down at Middlesbrough after 20 minutes.

Bradshaw felt the side didn’t get what they deserved as they sought to end that winless streak. Indeed, boss Gary Rowett revealed the referees authority said Millwall should have been awarded three penalties for handballs in the 2-1 defeat at Blackburn.

Millwall have also been luckless on the injury front, with Rowett not having a full squad to choose from for any game this season.

But Bradshaw has full faith in the Lions’ “mental strength” and in the quality and depth of the squad.

“Since the gaffer’s been in charge that was our longest run without a win. But I don’t think we deserved to go that long without a win,” Bradshaw said.

“It wasn’t like a run of ten games where the performances were awful. A lot of the games we came out unlucky not to get a win.

“Sometimes that happens in football.

That’s where you need really good mental strength in the team. We’ve got good characters in the changing room and you need that when you need to pick up a win.

“We’ve got belief that we are a good team and we should be higher in the table than where we are. Hopefully we can turn it around and start moving up the table.

“We’ve got strength in depth in the squad. We’ve got a lot of options in every position and undoubtedly the gaffer will need those players between now and the end of the season. There are so many games in a shorter time this year. It’s tough to keep the same team week-in, week-out when you’re playing three games a week.

“It was no secret that as a team we weren’t happy with the performance against Middlesbrough. It wasn’t a Millwall-esque performance. Generally we’ve been really solid defensively. That’s never really been an issue for us.

“When we went out and performed in the manner we did, especially the first 20 minutes, it was a bit of a wake-up call for us. There’s nothing you can do about results after games, you’ve just got to try and get back to work to try to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“Hopefully we can start to pick up more wins.”

Bradshaw has been one of Millwall’s

better performers recently. He scored two goals in two games before yet another disruption to the campaign when the festive schedule against Bournemouth and Watford was called off.

There was a boost for Bradshaw as December drew to a close when Millwall took up an option to extend his contract by twelve months.

He has been playing off the main striker recently, a positon that allows him to drift into goal-scoring areas unseen by defenders.

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL AND Boreham Wood meet for the first time in a competitive fixture on Saturday for a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

National League Boreham have already come through three rounds, defeating one Football League side, Southend, on penalties before a comfortable 3-0 win at Canvey Island in the second round.

Their talisman is Matt Rhead, the 36-year-old striker who was part of Lincoln City’s journey to the quarter-finals of the competition in 2017, the first time in 103 years a non-league team had reached the last eight.

Lions boss Gary Rowett will not make wholesale changes to his side, but Danny McNamara is in contention for a debut and Tyler Burey for a full debut.

Rowett knows all about taking advantage of bigger clubs underestimating lowerleague opponents. He led his League Two

Burton to League Cup wins at Sheffield United and Leicester City in 2012-13, before the Brewers lost to Bradford City, another League Two side, who went on to reach the final where they were defeated

by Swansea.

Rowett will be without the suspended Murray Wallace for the fixture. As well as McNamara and Burey, eighteen-yearold defender Hayden Muller could also feature.

But supporters will not be at Meadow Park as 2021 brings more restrictive measures. Fans were back at The Den for two games, creating hope it was the start of paving the way for increasing capacities.

But Bradshaw stresses his team-mates aren’t using it as an excuse.

“Nothing is guaranteed at the

moment,” he said. “When they came back we all thought it would kick on from there and we’d get more fans in, more fans in.

“It was a bit cruel on the fans, for them to be back for a couple of games and then it changes again.

“It’s strange now because before they came back in it almost felt normal because it’d been so long. But then when they came back it was a reminder that this isn’t normal. It just makes you more excited when they come back.

“There have been ups and downs but ultimately everyone is in the same position.

It’s not an excuse we’re using or that we’ll hide behind.

“We’ve to be positive and keeping moving forward.”

MILLWALL 31 Tyler Burey has always played without fear

Winger on ‘rocky road’ that has brought him to cusp of major breakthrough

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IF TYLER Burey makes his full Millwall debut at Boreham Wood this weekend, he will play with the same fearlessness that has brought him this far.

That lack of fear is displayed not just on the pitch when he takes on defenders, but also off it.

When Burey, 19, left Fulham’s academy as a schoolboy, he went into Sunday League football, playing “as much as possible” to try to catch the eye of scouts.

That ambition paid off when AFC Wimbledon noticed his talent. Burey played in a trial game and on the back of that was offered a six-week academy trial. Four weeks in, the Dons had seen enough, and signed him on a two-year scholarship.

As a sixteen-year-old he trained with the first team, a group that included former Millwall defender and now Lions coach Paul Robinson.

“It was hard because I was in an academy environment from very young,” Burey tells the News. “Fulham were in the Premier League when I was there, and it was any young player’s dream to play in the Premier League.

“But then situations happen and sometimes things happen that are outside of your control. Once I left Fulham I just went back into Sunday League. I played football as much as possible. Anywhere I could play – Sunday League, tournaments – literally any football I could play I would.”

His mum, Stephanie was and is a major influence. The head of sport at Stanmore

College, and a former teacher, she knows what makes youngsters tick, the kind of encouragement they need to take them towards their goals.

“My mum’s helped me all the way”, Burey says. “My mum’s taken me training, my dad as well. My mum tells me to keep working, there’s going to be a chance.

“I had to work on myself as much as possible. I had to go back to grassroots to get back to where I wanted to be.

“My mum knew how you had to be mentally strong. With my education as well she always helped me. It was the best of both worlds with my education and football.”

Burey reflected on his journey after he made his senior professional debut, a 4-0 EFL Trophy win against Stevenage in November 2018.

“That was the start of any professional football for me, I was over the moon,” he says. “I was thinking, ‘I did it’. It’s the dream growing up to make your firstteam debut or even just have your name on the back of your shirt.

“All the hard work, all the setbacks had come down to then and it just felt like a big comeback. When I took the drop from Fulham I knew it was going to be a very, very hard road back to where I wanted to be.”

Burey joined Millwall for compensation after his terms ran out at the end of the season.

“Millwall came in for me and they were just so keen on my ability,” he says.

“Sometimes you have to take the next step in your career to better yourself. So I said my goodbyes to everyone who had helped me at Wimbledon.

“It’s one of the best steps I’ve taken. It’s been a rocky road but it’s been a good

one as well.”

Burey’s determination to succeed is such that, between seasons, he takes on a trainer for individual sessions, working on “winger-based stuff: crossing, playing off one touch, finishing, dribbling with both feet.

“After training I do a lot of extras, including shooting. Whenever is the right time to do extras I’ll do extras.”

After joining the Lions in the summer of 2019 – when Neil Harris welcomed him to the training ground – Burey’s objective was to make his firstteam debut. He did well with Kevin Nugent’s under-23s, but then football’s suspension in March put his ambitions on hold.

Not that Burey was ever going to let time drift passively by until the return.

“It was quite hard, but I’m quite independent and do a lot of stuff on my own. It was a time when you had to train on your own, make sure you stayed fit,” he says. “You couldn’t be unfit because at any moment you could get a call to say you’re back in training.

“I was doing my own stuff as well after the sessions we had been given. It was important to put your head to your work. You had to stay focused.”

Burey finally got his chance on the last day of the season when he came on in the 4-1 win over Huddersfield at The Den with ten minutes left.

He explains how he felt when Gary Rowett told him to warm up. “My emotions were high, thinking, ‘this could be my chance’. But I was also telling myself if I didn’t get a chance, to stay humble, it’s another learning curve. The most important thing is to be ready.

“Everyone has nerves but everyone deals with them differently. When I got my

chance I wanted to try to do what I could with the minutes I had.

It’s the same as the games this season, I want to make as big an impact as possible and play with no fear. If I lose the ball, how quickly can I recover it?

“Playing with no fear is something I picked up from when I was young.

I’m a one-v-one player so I like to get the ball to feet a lot, run at players as much as possible. The gaffer and Jed [Wallace] have helped me with things like, ‘play quickly, take one touch then move again’, to get into a one-v-one.

“It’s more about realising when to do a one-v-one and when not to. It helps my game develop more.”

Burey feels he’s in the ideal place for that.

“As soon as I walked into the building I just felt a warm welcome,” he says.

“Even though Neil is gone now, there’s still that same warm feeling, it’s a good environment to be around. Everyone wants to help each other.

“That’s good for me to become a better player and be the best that I can be.

“I like to set myself targets at the start of the season. I keep them within arm’s reach, knowing what I can achieve if I work hard.

“One of the biggest goals at Millwall was to make my debut before the end of the season. I worked hard, I gave myself the best possible chance for the gaffer to give me a shot and luckily he did.

“I use players around and the players who have come up as inspiration that if they can do it, there’s nothing stopping me from doing it if I’m working hard.”

Former Birmingham head of scouting Harvey Bussell was confirmed as Alex Aldridge’s successor last week.

On his LinkedIn page, Bussell says he is “a football industry professional with extensive knowledge of players within various leagues across Europe”.

Brexit has complicated things for British clubs looking to sign players from EU countries. They will need a Governing Body Endorsement, with points awarded on a number

of criteria, including the league the player played in, Champions League appearances and international caps. In effect, it is set to limit EFL clubs’ scope to shop in the lower-ranked European leagues, such as Norway’s Eliteserien or 2. Bundesliga in Germany.

Millwall boss Gary Rowett says the Lions are looking for “value” in a number of leagues in this window.

“Harvey’s got a very, very good knowledge of European and global markets. That’s always somewhere we’d look for value,” Rowett said.

“But a club like Millwall, we have to make sure that the player has the right characteristics, that he doesn’t have to spend too long settling into the culture and the team. All of those factors come into play.

“It’s a market we look at regularly.

We look at games in various parts of the world on the [scouting] system that we use.”

One deal that could be less complicated is the potential extension of Kenneth Zohore’s loan from West Brom.

Striker Zohore has only three more games in which to impress, but Rowett is leaning towards a decision to keep the player.

“The situation remains the same.

We need to see his fitness and form in the team to have that conversation,” Rowett said.

“It might be that West Brom want him to stay with us, they might want him back - there are a multitude of factors.

“For us, it’s about whether he can stay fit for the next three games and

have an impact, and we’ll then have a conversation and see where we are.

“The Ken Zohore at Preston, last weekend against Coventry for 20, 25 minutes, you saw how effective he can be. If he’s a fully fit player, of course we’d want to keep him.

“That’s not been the case so far and he’s been a little bit lucky. What we need to make sure is that any player we consider keeping can have an impact moving forward, not just the next few games.”

Meanwhile, Millwall have lost out to Preston in the race for Jayson Molumby. The Lions only wanted a permanent deal for the Brighton midfielder rather than another loan.

But they couldn’t tempt Brighton and the Ireland international instead moved to Preston on loan on Tuesday.

Millwall saw their season put on hold from March to June in 2020 after the coronavirus outbreak, but since last year’s restart professional clubs have rigorous protocols and testing procedures in place.

The efficacy of that has led to a raft of postponements across the top four leagues in England, and in the National League where Dulwich Hamlet’s campaign has also been affected by call-offs.

Eight Millwall players tested positive for Covid-19 after their game against Nottingham Forest on December 19, leading to the closure of the training ground and ten-day periods of self-isolation for those affected.

Earlier this week it was confirmed that there were 40 positive tests across the Premier League, a season high. More than 50 games have been postponed across the top five leagues in England since Christmas, including Millwall’s fixtures against Bournemouth and Watford.

The Women’s Super League and Championship are continuing, but below that, including Millwall Lionesses, seasons are paused.

But there are fears another suspension could be on the way. West Brom manager Sam Allardyce has called for a “circuit break”, while Rochdale chairman David Bottomley wants the EFL to suspend the season.

But at the moment the organisation has no plans to press pause, though that will be regularly reviewed and based on the latest medical guidance.
