UNICEF’s first UK aid since the war sees 20,000 breakfasts for Southwark children

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Neil Coyle has rounded on Jacob Rees-Mogg after the Tory MP branded UNICEF’s emergency food grant for children in Southwark a ‘political stunt’.

This month UNICEF announced it was teaming up with the charity School Food Matters to fund 20,000 nutritious breakfasts for children in Southwark during the two-week Christmas holidays and February’s half-term.

More than 13,000 meals will be distributed throughout the borough with help from Premier Foods, Southwark Council, and Southwark Food Action Alliance.

The grant, in response to the COVID-19 crisis, is the first time UNICEF UK has

mobilised a domestic emergency response and provided food aid in the UK. In the House of Commons, Rees-Mogg said UNICEF should be ‘ashamed’ of the programme, describing it as ‘a political stunt of the lowest order’.

He went on to say that it was a ‘scandal’ that the money was being donated to children in Britain rather than developing countries.

Responding to Rees-Mogg’s comments, Bermondsey and Old Southwark Neil Coyle said the Tory MP could ‘not be more out of touch.

“Instead of condemning UNICEF for helping in Southwark, the government should examine why so many children need UNICEF help,” Coyle told the News.

“Rees-Mogg could not be more out of touch but I hope he examines his conscience in the run up to Christmas and agrees to visit Helping out at Christmas

Coyle has also penned a letter to ReesMogg, who is leader of the House of Commons, castigating him for his ‘lack of shame’ and inviting him to meet families in Southwark who will benefit from the grant.

“Charles Dickens used his memories of living in Southwark as inspiration for ‘A Christmas Carol’, which I’d recommend you read in order to observe the striking resemblance you bear to Scrooge before he amended his ways,” Coyle wrote.

UNICEF says there are 15,000 children in Southwark vulnerable to food poverty, and has described the pandemic as “the most urgent crisis affecting children since the Second World War”.

Even before COVID-19, an estimated 2.4 million children in the UK were growing up in households struggling with food

insecurity.

Anna Kettley, Director of Programmes at Unicef UK, said: “This is Unicef’s first ever emergency response within the UK, introduced to tackle the unprecedented impact of the coronavirus crisis and reach the families most in need.

“The grant for School Food Matters will address the gap in current provision for children, providing approximately 1,800 children with breakfast bags during the Christmas holidays and February half term.

“This funding will help build stronger communities as the impact of the pandemics worsen, but ultimately a longerterm solution is needed to tackle the root causes of food poverty, so no child is left to go hungry”.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The Walworth family who put on a dazzling Christmas display outside their home every year for the charity that saved their son's life say they hope to 'bring a smile' to anyone struggling this winter.

Every year the Mustafa family deck their Albany Road home out with the beautiful lights to raise funds for Anthony Nolan; the charity that saved their son Alex's life with a bone marrow transplant thirteen years ago. Alex had been diagnosed with leukaemia at just four years of age.

After initially recovering, he later relapsed at the age of eleven and at one point was so unwell he had just a four per cent chance of survival.

Finding a bone marrow match is even less likely for ethnic minorities but, miraculously, not only was Alex quickly matched but he also went on to make a full recovery after having the procedure at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Every year his forever-grateful retired cabbie Dad Gunaltay, mum Donna and sister Jade, deck their Aylesbury home out to recreate the decorations they first put up when Alex was undergoing treatment to help lift his spirits.

Now, they are a reminder of the incredible work Anthony Nolan does and the importance of joining the bone marrow transplant register, especially for those from BAME backgrounds.

Writing on their fundraising page, his sister Jade said: “Alex still has lifelong side effects that he will have to deal with for the rest of his life, but he’s here and with us and that’s all that matters.

“My Dad vowed after the transplant that he would use the lights as a way of raising money for Anthony Nolan charity each year, and all he hopes is that they bring a bit of joy to people who might be going through a hard time and bring a bit of a smile.

“I think given this year’s current situation as well they’re even more poignant.

“If you have some spare pennies, no matter how big or small, they would be greatly appreciated.

“Without this charity my brother wouldn’t be with us and would have missed out on the last thirteen years of memories that we’ve had as a family.”

So far the family has £1,150 this winter through donations online and a charity raffle. They are hoping to make it their biggest year yet.

Family of former Mayoress thank nurses

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The grateful parents of former Southwark mayoress, Cleo Arens, have handed the nurses who treated her leukemia a cheque in her memory.

Mum Maria and stepdad Marcus presented the money for the nurses’ staff room earlier this month.

Ms Arens sadly passed away of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) in August.

Cleo had been known in Southwark as the Mayoress in 2006/7.

Her parents praised the work of the nurses at the Talbot Butler oncology ward where Cleo was treated, saying they went above and beyond in their care.

They also revealed how Cleo volunteered to take a new drug to treat her cancer - which has led to it now being available for others on the NHS. “People don’t think about these nurses, and we wanted to give something back to them,” said Marcus.

“We raised about £800 for them.

They chose to spend it on a fridge and sofa for the staff room, which we were really happy with.

“If they stop and remember Cleo for a moment when they use those things, then that’s lovely.

“They told us that Cleo was part of their family, and they were fantastic with us too.”

Fire wardens drafted into block neighbouring lakanal house

“But we’re forever grateful to him, that was the closest match they found,” Marcus said. The stem cell improved Cleo’s condition until around May 2019.

Then Cleo and family sadly discovered it had not worked, and she was not eligible for another transplant.

The ex-mayoress then turned to a drug more widely used in the States for her condition called Venetoclax.

It was not available on the NHS, meaning Cleo and her friends needed to raise the money privately for the treatment.

After raising £5,500 for a month’s

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk treatment, doctors agreed to let Cleo try the drug - and as a result, by the time it came to month two, Cleo was able to get it on the NHS. “She probably got eight or ten months of extra life through it,” said Marcus, so that she could spend one more Christmas and her birthday with family.

Family say they have told Cleo’s story in the hope that it raises awareness of AML, an under-researched and underfunded condition.

“It’s nasty, it’s underfunded and under-researched,” added Marcus.

“Cleo was on 24 tablets a day. You might think she'd had enough but she always carried on.”

Over 100 stone carvings make up the new sculpture

Fire safety flaws have been uncovered at Lakanal House’s neighbouring block in Camberwell.

This month, 24/7 fire safety wardens were introduced at Marie Curie House in Sceaux Gardens Estate more than a decade after a devastating blaze killed six people - including three children - in Lakanal.

Southwark Council’s housing chief, Leo Pollak, said the council had discovered ‘issues’ with the building and is now arranging further, more detailed investigations - begging the question why these issues, given the estate’s history, have only just come to light.

Leo Pollak, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “We take fire safety extremely seriously, and we have discovered some issues with the building which we believe require some intrusive investigation, which we have taken immediate action to carry out.

“As a precautionary measure, wardens have been employed to keep watch over our residents 24 hours a day – this is a procedure we have used before, with advice from London Fire Brigade, to make absolutely sure that everyone is

safe.

“I understand that this is probably very worrying for residents, but I want to reassure them that their safety is our highest priority and we will remain in constant communication with them.”

In 2013, four years after the blaze, a damning 50-day inquest found victims died because they were told to ‘stay put’ - but safety flaws in the block meant the fire spread rapidly out of control. It also emerged there were no fire risk assessments in place, with evidence highlighting “a serious failure on the part of Southwark Building Design Services, its contractors and its subcontractors” over work that had made the building less safe.

Speaking after the verdict, bereaved Mr Udoaka, whose wife and 20 day old baby daughter perished in the fire, said: “We fear very much that lessons have not been learned and that it could happen again.” Sadly, this proved all too true when many of the same failings were repeated at Grenfell.

Since Lakanal House fire Southwark Council has spent £67 million on fire safety. The News asked Southwark Council what safety concerns have been discovered, and when, but did not receive a reply before going to press.

Peckhamplex gets grant to reopen

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A new community-built sculpture has been unveiled in Bermondsey’s Tanner Street Park.

The artwork, called the Cornerstone, uses more than 100 stone carvings created by residents and locals on the nearby Whites Grounds Estate.

The piece was the brainchild of artist Austin Emery, a former Bermondsey resident.

“I love the idea of people who would not otherwise normally do this, coming together and getting the chance to pick up a chisel and mallet to carve something of themselves into the stone, and for their carving to become a permanent part of the fabric and landscape of London,

which will outlive all of us,” he said.

“This feeling of connection to the material of our place is something that stonemasons and carvers have always enjoyed.”

More than 200 residents, groups, and businesses crowdfunded the cost of the project, including the Mayor’s Office, which contributed £50,000, and Southwark Council.

“We're delighted to see this bold, ambitious and truly public work installed in Tanner Street Park,” said Cllr Stephanie Cryan, of Southwark Council.

“It's a wonderful collaboration between artist Austin Emery and the local community, a number of whom made an impression on the sculpture during public workshop sessions.

“It is a striking addition to our park

and we hope that it will inspire and bring joy to generations to come as well."

A sister piece to the Cornerstone, called The Shared, was unveiled on the Tyers Estate in 2014.

Bermondsey councillor, Cllr Damian O’Brien, who has backed the two projects, said he thanked all those involved in making the artwork come to life.

“I’d like to thank Austin Emery and members of the community who have created this striking piece of art, thanks also to Southwark’s Parks Department for agreeing its placement in Tanner Street Park,” he said.

“I hope it will be appreciated for the community spirit that was at the forefront of its creation.”

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Independent Peckham cinema, Peckhamplex, has been given nearly £600,000 in a bid to make sure it reopens in 2021.

The south London institution – famed for its £4.99 tickets any time of the day – has been given the money from the government’s Culture Recovery Fund.

In total, the cinema will receive £564,423 to stay afloat.

Its chairman, John Weiss, said: “This help, together with very careful management by the Peckhamplex team, will enable us to remain viable not losing a single employee.

“And when public health conditions permit and the flow of commercial films is renewed, we look forward to reopening and continuing to entertain and

inform our large and diverse audience from across London at affordable prices.”

The cinema had opened its doors when allowed in August, but was rapidly forced to shut up shop once again as not enough people were buying tickets to see movies.

A lack of big-screen productions also hampered the cinema’s efforts to stay open. It had planned to re-open with a new Bond release in November.

Under current Tier 4 rules in London and the south-east, cinemas are not allowed to open to the public, with no clear date for when screenings will next be able to take place.

Other independent Southwark cinemas given support from the Culture Recovery Fund include the Bermondsey Kino.

Meanwhile, cinemas such as the Dulwich Picturehouse, and Brixton’s Ritzy were forced to close temporarily in October because of a lack of movie-goers.

As he puts London in the new tier 4 lockdown

Boris Johnson cancelled Christmas for millions of people across London and the South East on Sunday, saying he had ‘no alternative’ as the mutant strain of COVID-19 is up to ‘70 per cent more transmissible’.

The PM made a dramatic U-turn and put London and parts of the South East and east of England into a new ‘tier 4’ lockdown - with a ban on non-essential travel, retail, and indoor household mixing.

Johnson said he was forced to act by worrying new data emerging over recent days, and that despite his ‘heavy heart’ there was ‘no alternative open to me’.

“I know how much emotion people

invest at this time of year and how important it is for grandparents to see their grandchildren, and for families to be together,” he said.

“But we have said throughout this pandemic that we must and we will be guided by the science.”

The PM said the virus is spreading more rapidly in London, the South East, and east of England and, if left unchecked, would overwhelm the NHS as tier 3 was ‘not delivering results’ as expected.

“The spread is now being driven by the new variant of the virus,” Johnson confirmed.

He said a team of specialist advisers have been analysing the new strain of COVID-19, thought to have originated in London or Kent in mid-September.

There is no evidence the variant has higher mortality rates, leads to more serious illness, or that the vaccine will be less effective against it.

However, early research has found it spreads more easily, with scientists saying it could be up to 70 per cent more transmissible than the original form of COVID-19.

“We have to act on information as we have it because this is now spreading

very fast,” Johnson said, before announcing Christmas bubbles in tier 4 were off the table, and describing overall tier 4 restrictions as ‘broadly equivalent’ to the national lockdown.

Responding to the announcement, Southwark Council leader Kieron Williams said: "Sadly, London's cases have increased exponentially and the government has responded by placing the capital in tier 4.

"This means tougher restrictions for people in Southwark where rates have doubled in a week.

"I am so sorry for all of you who had planned to travel, see relatives or try to enjoy the festive season.

"But we must all be reminded of the seriousness of keeping to the rules.

"Lives are at greater risk and together we must follow those rules to keep everyone safe and save lives.”

What are the new rules?

Tier 4 covers all London’s 32 boroughs and huge swathes of the South-East of England, including the home counties.

In all, it covers a third of England and nearly eighteen million people. Those areas within tier 4 outside London are: Berkshire; Buckinghamshire; Gosport; Bedford, Milton Keynes, Luton, Peterborough, Hertfordshire, Essex excluding Colchester, Uttlesford and Tendring; Havant; Kent; Portsmouth; Rother and Hastings and Surrey excluding Waverley.

In tier 4 you can travel to work if working from home is not possible (for example for construction or manufacturing roles) but shouldn’t leave the tier

or stay overnight anywhere else.

Non-essential travel abroad is also banned.

You can only meet one person from another household outdoors but, in one difference to previous lockdowns, communal worship can continue. Support bubbles can continue but only for the most vulnerable people.

Tier 4 took effect from midnight on Sunday and will be next reviewed on December 30. There will be no relaxation for Christmas.

Johnson also upended advice for the rest of England, and areas falling in tiers 1-3. Previous advice that up to three households could mix for five days has now been restricted to only mixing on Christmas Day.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Boris Johnson’s Christmas announcement was greeted with dismay by residents and politicians alike.

Residents were furious that promised Christmas bubbles were left in tatters, with families heartbroken and now facing an anxious few days of frantic shopping for essentials.

Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes said that the need for further restrictions over Christmas had been ‘obvious’ for some time, and although many had already decided to stay away from their loved ones this was no comfort to those left out of pocket and alone - and businesses now closing shop.

“As recently as last Wednesday Boris Johnson was still crying bah humbug at anyone who suggested new restrictions were needed,” she said.

“Making an earlier announcement would have given more time to plan and adjust.

“His indecision, delay and incompetence is compounding the misery of this pandemic.

She has joined calls for parliament to

be urgently reconvened. “Our country is in chaos and turmoil on Boris Johnson’s watch,” she said.

“Parliament must be recalled so that MPs can represent our constituents who are anxious and suffering, hold the government to account and debate the solutions we urgently need to chart a course through this national crisis.”

Bermondsey MP Neil Coyle said the PM was ‘not on top of the detail’, and had ‘heaped ‘avoidable chaos’ on families.

“Millions made plans to see family that won’t now happen,” he said.

“Millions will be lost to the economy.

Many thousands of people will have left London after work and schools closed yesterday.

“How many will be exporting COVID, including the more infectious variant?

What a foreseeable mess.”

Coyle also angrily refused health minister Matt Hancock’s claims that the government only knew the mutated virus posed such a threat after receiving new data from scientists on Friday.

Hancock had told MPs in the House of Commons days earlier that the new strain appeared to be spreading more quickly.

So what do we actually know about the 'mutant' virus?

The new strain is believed to be up to 70 per cent more transmissible after rapidly spreading across the south-east of England since being first identified in September.

At the weekend government press conference Chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, said that at the end of November this mutation accounted for just 10-15 per cent of all cases.

By December 9, over 60 per cent of new cases in London were attributed to the new strain - meaning It is not only spreading fast but also quickly becoming the dominant variant.

Although it has taken hold in the South East, this strain has now been identified in every area of Britain.

So far there is no evidence the mutation increases the risk of serious

illness, or that it could affect how the vaccine works, but these are questions scientists are currently trying to ascertain with further research.

We do know that a small number of new cases had already been identified in other countries including Denmark, South Africa, Italy and the British territory of Gibraltar.

According to data from the Genomics UK Consortium, published on Friday, there have been 655 cases of the new strain identified in London; 703 in Kent, 183 in Norfolk, 136 in Essex, and 11 in Glasgow.

According to the latest data, the UK’s R number is estimated at 1.1 to 1.2, with a daily infection growth rate range of +1 per cent to +4 per cent - potentially spelling catastrophe for the NHS.

What is the situation in Southwark?

The largest teaching union in the country, the National Education Union, is calling for lessons to move back online for the first two weeks of next term and mass testing in schools thereafter.

Southwark, like London as a whole, has seen an exponential growth in confirmed positive COVID-19 cases, leading to fears the NHS could be completely overwhelmed in January.

Its members want teachers prioritised for the vaccine during that fortnight.

Education secretary Gavin Williamson has already said that secondary reopenings will be staggered to allow for mass testing.

Currently, all students are expected to return to school by January 11.

Daily lab-confirmed confirmed cases were just shy of 300 on Monday, having been 236 a week previously, and 106 on December 7.

Two people died from COVID-19 in Southwark in the week ending Friday, December 4. A total of 260 people from the borough have been killed by the virus since March. So far hospital admissions are still below the levels reached during the first wave, but are expected to continue to quickly rise - with the true impact of the last few week's infections not felt until the New Year.

Crowds reported days before tier 4

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Public health officials have spoken of their fear of an increasing number of large crowds gathering by the river in the days before Tier 4 was announced.

At a briefing on Monday, councillors were told that large crowds were reported gathering at Bermondsey Street, Druid Street and Elephant and Castle as well as by the river.

Officials told councillors that twenty prohibition notices and eight £1,000 fines had been dished out to businesses in the weeks leading up to the Tier 4 announcement.

Cases continue to grow in Southwark, said the briefing, with hot stops being pointed out in Peckham Rye, Surrey Docks and South Bermondsey wards.

Public Health teams at the council say that while the vaccine roll-out is good news, they do not believe they will be stopping their Covid-prevention work until summer next year the earliest.

“While there is reason for optimism that the morbidity and mortality impact of COVID-19 will begin to diminish from late spring / early summer 2021 onwards, there are ongoing pressures on services,” states the report, authored by the council’s head of public health, Jin Lim. “Even with at-scale vaccine roll-out by mid-summer 2021, continued outbreaks of disease will likely continue into the spring / summer of next year.

“It remains unclear from national government what resourcing will be made available to the Council to support the COVID-19 response beyond April 2021.”

Southwark had 1,373 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the week up to 16 December, and officials believe a large part of the rapid increase in cases is the new strain of Covid.

“Evidence suggests a new strain of the COVID-19 virus is a key driver behind the rapid increase in rates in London,” the report added.

While the new strain is believed to be more transmissible, “currently there is no evidence that the new variant is anymore detrimental to health.”

Jose Tapas Bar was handed the fine and warned that further breaches could lead to prosecution after council officials discovered a crowd of drinkers outside.

Council officials claim there were “several hundred” drinkers outside, and that police were called to break them up.

Staff at the popular joint were also allegedly seen to top up punters’ glasses with beer and wine in defiance of the-then rules.

The business is among those highlighted by enforcement officials as examples of action taken to make sure Covid rules are followed during the course of the pandemic.

In another case, officers visited Flat Iron Square in Borough, only to discover businesses selling alcohol without a substantial meal as required at the time.

“When inspected, till receipts showed almost £23,000 of alcohol sales in just one day,” states a council

update on its enforcement, dated December 22.

“A formal warning was issued and the premises were told that they’d be given a legal order and a fine if found doing it again.”

In a third case, Camberwell’s Grafterboy Lounge on Camberwell New Road was visited when a member of staff was just about to light up a shisha pipe indoors and smoke indoors.

The business was later refused a licence to operate on “grounds of public safety.”

“With cases of COVID-19 rising rapidly across the capital, it is even more important that individuals and businesses alike take a moment to consider what they should do to reduce the risk of exposing themselves and others to the virus,” said the council’s Evelyn Akoto.

“Council teams are doing a great job supporting the police and responsible businesses to get this message out.”

Officials say they have spot checked over 5,000 businesses, given free advice to over 600 and closed around 130 that should not have been open.

The enforcement officers do not have the power to break up large gatherings, which are the responsibility of police.

Diver Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix, 16, was named the BBC’s young sports personality of the year earlier this month.

The teen, a member of the Crystal Palace Diving Club, gained her firstever senior national crown earlier this year by winning the Women's 10m Platform event at the British Diving Championships.

The impressive feat is among the reasons which saw her earn the prestigious BBC award, which she collected on Sunday.

The Harris Academy Bermondsey pupil now dreams of competing in the Olympics. “For people getting into any sport, I'd tell them to have fun, love their sport and to really enjoy what they are doing - and to have a dream,” she said.

“I'm getting so far in my sport, and

I am enjoying it so much because my dream is the Olympic Games. I know I can get there if I carry on with what I'm doing."

The Nunhead youngster was talent spotted at an early age having previously focussed on gymnastics.

“I was a gymnast and so quite flexible and strong, and I started doing well at diving so I stopped my gymnastics and swimming and just focused on diving, and my love for it just grew,” says Andrea.

Her success has been applauded by her school, who say she is a role model for other students.

“This award is a huge accomplishment for Andrea and is testament to her continued commitment, resilience and positive attitude towards her goals in diving, whilst maintaining her excellent academic record,” said school principal Lindsey Harris.

"Andrea is an exemplary role model for other HAB students and we will continue to support her as she continues to train for the summer 2021 Olympics.”

Filmed under harsh Covid conditions Head came up with the idea after he had four shows cancelled, his feature filmed postponed and the final straw came when his panto was called off.

“I knew I had to do something, create an opportunity, try and bring some festive cheer”, he said.

“Working with true professionals such as Joe Pasquale, Vas Blackwood, Vanessa Feltz, Caprice and Chesney Hawkes made everything run smoothly,” he told the News.

“We had such a small budget and didn’t have the luxury of rehearsals, so it was basically, turn up, film and move on. Only the quality of all involved made it happen,” he continued.

“I would speak to the choreographer (Mitchell Harper) on Monday and the next day he would have a great number ready to film… I would give the outline of a song on Tuesday and on Wednesday they were in the

Caprice with Michael Head’s two young daughters recording studio making it sound blinding. So it is full credit to the cast and crew’s talent that we pulled it off. It was fantastic to work with them. And to have these people on set acting alongside my daughters - who are two of the main characters - was unbelievable. The set had a real family feel.”

Corbyn’s leaflet compares vaccine to Auschwitz

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Walworth’s Piers Corbyn, a prominent anti-lockdown activist, has been slammed for an ‘utterly sick’ leaflet which compares the coronavirus vaccine to Auschwitz.

Groups affiliated to Mr Corbyn, the brother of former Labour leader Jeremy, handed out the leaflet at a demonstration in central London last weekend.

The flyer compares vaccines to the infamous concentration camp, Auschwitz, alongside false claims about the Covid vaccine.

A graphic, which the leaflet claims was thought of by Mr Corbyn, shows the gates to Auschwitz alongside the words ‘Vaccines are safe path to freedom.’

The leaflet then signposts readers to a website with interviews of the conspiracy theorist and a raft of disputed or untrue claims about the safety of vaccines.

The leaflet has also been shared by Mr Corbyn on his social media.

Dave Rich, the policy lead at Community Security Trust, a group that monitors antisemitism, slammed Mr Corbyn as a conspiracy theorist.

“And his abuse of the Holocaust to promote his dangerous views about vaccines is utterly sick,” he said.

The Auschwitz Memorial has also blasted the image, saying: “Instrumentalization of the tragedy of people who suffered and were murdered in concentration and extermination camps as a result of ideology of hatred in order to argue against vaccination that saves human lives is an appalling symptom of moral and intellectual decline.”

Mr. Corbyn commented: “The leaflet exposes the fascistic nature of the NewNormal and NewWorldOrder. People who appear to be saying it is somehow anti-Semitic are deranged.”

Council officials wrongly told a family-of-four living in a cramped one-bed flat they had made themselves overcrowded on purpose to skip the housing queue, a court has ruled.

Favio Flores, 46, and his partner Elba moved into the one-bed flat in Peckham in 2014 with their two kids as it was all they could afford.

At the time, they did not know that they could approach the council for housing help. The overcrowding meant that Favio and Elba were forced to sleep on the floor.

When they applied to be on Southwark’s housing register in 2018, officials accepted they were overcrowded, as their

two children were both above ten-yearsold.

But Southwark insisted Favio and his family had made themselves overcrowded on purpose by moving into a flat too small for their needs, to try to get priority on the waiting list.

In a Court of Appeal ruling last week, Lord Justice Males said: “At that time he

obtained for himself and his family the best accommodation which he could afford.

“He did not take it with any thought of improving his position on the register, a possibility of which at the time he had no knowledge.”

The council has now been ordered to give the family Band 1 priority for

Lawyers for the family say the judgement has set a precedent that councils cannot accuse families of making themselves overcrowded on purpose by taking the most suitable accommodation available to them.

“Most people like Favio and his family move into properties that they can afford out of necessity rather than have an involved agenda for getting up the housing ladder,” said Manjit Mandair, of the law firm Osbornes.

“It is deeply unfair that Mr Flores and

his family were accused of this and we hope this judgement will help others in a similar situation.”

The council’s approach was criticised by the court, with Lord Justice Males saying it created “perverse” consequences.

“The council’s approach leads to some odd, or even perverse, consequences,” he said.

“It means that an applicant who acts reasonably in taking the most suitable accommodation for his family that he can afford disqualifies himself from priority once his children grow to an age which renders that accommodation statutorily overcrowded.”

This policy needed “careful scrutiny”, added the judge.

Southwark said it was ‘refreshing’ its allocation process in the new year.

“There are cases such as these where the definitions and scenarios leading to a family becoming overcrowded need to be defined more tightly,” said Cllr Leo Pollak.

“And I would actively encourage contributions to our new housing allocations scheme which will go out to consultation in January to help us design an allocations scheme that is as fair transparent and clearly understood as is possible.”

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk In the first ruling of its kind, an inquest has recorded air pollution as a cause of Lewisham schoolgirl Ella Kissi-Debrah’s death.

Ella, who lived metres from the South Circular, died at just nine years old in February 2013 after suffering severe and worsening asthma.

At Inner South Crown Court on Wednesday, December 16, Coroner Philip Barlow said a combination of ‘excessive’ pollution, acute respiratory failure and severe asthma led to her death.

In 2014 a previous inquest had ruled Ella died from acute respiratory failure.

This was overturned after new evidence of the levels of pollution at the time of her death was brought forward.

The South Circular is one of London’s most toxic roads. Ella’s death coincided with surges in pollution levels, which regularly exceeded World Health Organisation limits due to traffic fumes.

Her mother, Rosamund, had told the court she had been unaware of the danger posed by pollution near the family’s home, and would have moved if she had been given more information about the links between Ella’s condition and dirty air.

Campaigners and the family’s lawyers argued the government and Lewisham Council had consistently failed to tackle toxic air and educate the public about its dangers.

A statement from Ella’s family after the ruling said: “Today was a landmark case, a seven year fight has resulted in air pollution being recognised on Ella’s death certificate.

“Hopefully this will mean many more children’s lives being saved. Thank you everyone for your continued support.”

Green Party co-leader Sian Berry, who is running in next year’s mayoral election in London, said the landmark case had shown the need for emergency legislation.

More than 100 groups have backed an open letter to the government calling for the Environment Bill, currently going through parliament, to enshrine World Health Organisation air quality guidelines.

Mums for Lungs, who set up in south London in 2017, are leading the campaign. They want the government to set legally binding air quality targets, and also urge environment secretary George Eustice to push for more public transport spending to help people

move away from reliance on cars.

A key demand is for regulators to be ‘truly independent’ and hold the government to account when limits are exceeded.

Jane Dutton, from Mums for Lungs, said: “We urgently need more action from the government on air pollution.

“This is not just a London problem, millions of people across the UK are breathing unsafe levels of air.

“The World Health Organisation have said that there is no safe level of air pollution – and that’s why we’re calling on the government to be ambitious with setting a target now for WHO limits of PM2.5 in the Environment Bill."

A roll-out of low traffic neighbourhood measures has proved an ongoing topic of controversy this year, with some of those opposed to the changes arguing the barriers prevent the emergency services from getting to their calls.

The News has previously reported how paramedics have complained that planters installed in Walworth did not show up on their sat-navs, delaying the response to patients having fits.

However, one study appears to show that the low-traffic measures do not cause lengthened response times.

Now minutes of discussions from July, released last week under FOI laws, show all three emergency services have asked for camera barriers.

“We advocate the use of ANPR cameras,” said the LAS. “Demountable bollards do not work and keys are not universal across boroughs.”

The police added: “We know ANPR cameras are expensive but it’s about saving a life.”

Meanwhile, firefighters added: “Agree, we need to move towards ANPR cameras and narrow roads.”

Southwark Council has already installed cameras on some barriers in response to concerns raised by the emergency services, including on a barrier on Cooks Road, SE17.

The council’s transport boss, Cllr Catherine Rose, has previously told the News: “We’ve converted a number of permeable road closures to camera operated controls, at the request of the Emergency Services.”

Bag thief jailed

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A ‘prolific handbag thief’ from East Dulwich has been jailed for a year.

Anthony Morris admitted responsibility for the thefts across central and south London as he appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, December 15.

The 53-year-old from Friern Road was first investigated by police after stealing a handbag in the South Bank in July.

Shortly after he was captured on CCTV using stolen bank cards to buy mobile phone vouchers.

In August he stole a handbag from another South Bank venue - a pub in Upper Ground. Again, he visited shops soon after to make fraudulent purchases.

Officers identified him through CCTV footage and he was arrested on Saturday, October 3.

A search of his home recovered stolen property that linked him to three more bag thefts across London.

On December 15 he pleaded guilty to theft, handling stolen goods and fraud by false representation.

Police Sergeant Darren Watson, of the Central South BCU, said: “Bag theft may not seem like the most serious of offences, but it is one that causes huge upset and inconvenience for its victims and the effects go far beyond a loss of property.

“Londoners and those visiting our great city should be able to enjoy themselves without worrying that their belongings will be taken from under their nose.

“I am proud of my officers for the work that went into linking a series of offences to this one repeat offender, in particular the lead officer, PC Sarah Jackson, whose determined efforts helped to remove a prolific thief from the streets of London.”

Alfie Crawley, 26, is wanted in relation to three offences, making threats to kill, a knife-point van robbery and a residential burglary, say police.

The offences were allegedly committed between July and August. He also goes by the name of Alfie Jay and has specific links to Erith and Bromley.

man dies in prison day after murder conviction

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A man convicted of the murder of Bermondsey’s Rocky Djelal has died in prison the day after the verdict.

Stephen O’Rourke was convicted of the killing of Mr Djelal, 38, after a trial at the Old Bailey last Tuesday, December 15.

The 48-year-old had denied stabbing Mr Djelal to death in Southwark Park on October 31, 2018.

He had been due to return to court for sentencing but died in custody at Wandsworth Prison the following day.

A Prison Spokesperson said: “HMP Wandsworth prisoner Stephen O’Rourke died in custody on 16 December.

“The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed.”

No further details have been released.

An investigation will now be launched by the Ombudsman, which

investigates the circumstances of deaths in prison.

O’Rourke’s younger brother, Jason, had been due to stand trial accused of assisting an offender in connection with the Rocky Djelal murder.

During the trial the court was told Jason O’Rourke took his own life while awaiting trial at Belmarsh Prison, on April 2, 2019.

Sola Austin Warikwah, 39, was jailed for seven years at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday, December 17, for rape.

Warikwah, of Albyn Road, was placed on the sex offenders’ register for life, having previously been found unanimously guilty by a jury in September.

The court heard how the 25-yearold victim got into his car in the

early hours of April 22 last year at Embankment, believing him to be her minicab home.

Warikwah took her to a multistorey carpark in Victoria where he raped her. At the time, he had been a security guard, patrolling central London sites, including the car-park in which the rape took place.

The court heard how the victim sent messages to her friend detailing her horrifying ordeal, including a message saying: “I’ve been raped.

I feel sick. This taxi won’t take me home. I’m scared.”

When she managed to escape the car, she bravely took pictures of her attacker as he left the scene.

Detectives arrested Warikwah at his home two days later for the sickening crime. “Sola Austin Warikwah is a predatory sex offender who targeted a vulnerable, unsuspecting woman travelling alone,” said Detective Sergeant John Paton.

“Due to the courage and quick thinking of the victim, assistance from the public and the veracity of the investigation, a dangerous offender has been placed where he is no longer a threat to women.

“I sincerely hope that the sentence handed down today encourages other victims of sexual offences to come forward.”

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust’s mental health services for children and young people was rated ‘good’ overall by regulators last week but inspectors also highlighted delays in treatment and staffing issues.

In a report published on Friday, December 18, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) said the department had been rated good overall following an inspection in September.

NHS services are also rated in certain fields including being ‘caring and well-led’ and responsiveness. The trust, which includes the Maudsley Hospital at Denmark Hill, was assessed as ‘good’ in terms of being well-led but it ‘requires improvement’ for being responsive. Staff turnover was among the issues identified holding the trust back; with some patients not receiving the right care.

The CQC’s team focused their attention on the Child and Adult Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and the Service for People with Complex Autism Associated Neurodevelopmental Disorders (SCAAND).

The CQC’s head of hospital inspection for mental health and community health services, Jane Ray, said: “During our inspection of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust we found there were enough trained and experienced staff who were able to give the children and young people the time that they needed.

“Our inspectors heard from young people and parents that staff really cared, wanted to help, and felt that they provided invaluable support

when they were struggling.

“We did see some challenges with a high turnover of staff, which resulted in some patients not having the continuity of care they needed. The trust was told they must continue to work hard to address this.

“Despite these challenges we saw committed and enthusiastic staff throughout the trust, working hard to deliver care for patients. They demonstrated creative ways of working with young people to improve the quality of care they receive.

“Credit must be given for the hard work and commitment of the staff and leadership team. We will continue to monitor the trust’s performance and visit in the future to check if the improvements have been sustained.”

Particular praise was singled out for the staff’s ‘compassion and kindness’, and the smooth transitions when working with other agencies to help patients access further care and support.

As part of the inspection, the CQC’s team spoke with twelve young people who were in treatment or had recently been helped by these services, along with dozens of parents and carers.

The responsiveness assessment was the only area of the services’ work that had its rating downgraded. As of 30 September 2020, the vacancy rate for the local borough CAMHS services inspectors assessed was 17 per cent, with a turnover rate of 13.6 per cent.

Lambeth CLAMHS, which focuses on looked after children, had the highest turnover rate at 47 per cent.

There were also significant issues with resources and demands on the service, with long waiting lists and a lack of communication. COVID-19 had also exacerbated the difficulties families waiting for treatment faced.

The report notes: “Some children

and young people not assessed as needing urgent care, had significant waits for assessment and treatment.

“There were long waits for treatment of trauma, obsessive compulsive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and for autism assessments (which had been exacerbated by COVID-19 restrictions).

“Many parents/carers and education staff told us that they thought the thresholds for acceptance to services were sometimes too high, and that they had not received communication or support whilst waiting for assessment or treatment.”

Some told inspectors that things deteriorated to such a point during long waits that they found themselves in crisis - with staff left frustrated they were unable to intervene quickly enough.

The trust has now been told it must remedy these problems before reinspection.

Vanessa Smith, the trust's interim executive director of nursing said: “An overall Good rating reflects the care and compassion of our staff who work very hard to support the children and young people who use our services, their families or carers.

“We were pleased that inspectors commended the commitment and enthusiasm of staff and recognised that people who use our services are treated with the compassion and kindness they deserve.

"Inspectors also praised the creative ways our staff work with young people to improve the quality of care they receive.

“There is always more to be done but we are very proud of our Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services for this rating, particularly given the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic this year."

United St Saviour’s Charity have shared their ‘heartfelt thanks’ after its Christmas appeal exceeded the £22,000 target in just one week.

The Southwark Community Appeal, a partnership between United St Saviour’s, St George The Martyr’s Charity, and Southwark Council, has now received more than £26,000 in funding from generous residents.

This means more than 3,500

of the most vulnerable people in Southwark - at risk of COVID-19 but also loneliness and isolation - will be brought some Christmas cheer over the holidays.

Thirty-three grants have already been awarded to charities and community groups, including TRAs, to keep up their fantastic support work over Christmas and into the New Year.

These funds will make a huge

difference not only to elderly, unwell, and vulnerable people but also those who care for their relatives, people struggling with mental health and people living with disabilities.

As the charity has exceeded its fundraising target, it is even able to widen its grants to help people struggling financially. £26,291 has been raised so far by the charity’s supporters and our generous readers. Thank you.

A Bermondsey school has donated Christmas hampers to members of the community and school pupils and their families.

Students at Compass School, on Drummond Road, helped to nominate ‘community champions’ outside the school to give the hampers too.

They contained a range of goodies, including biscuits, fruit and vegetables and festive mince pies.

“We also allowed students to nominate some ‘community champions’ - people from outside the school community who they felt were deserving,” Head of English, Emma Walkey-Williams, who organised the initiative, said.

Surrey Quays shopping centre has unveiled a gigantic ‘giving box’ - which lets shoppers buying essential goods give donations to three important local charities.

The ‘giving boxes’ outside The Range on the ground floor, let shoppers use contactless to easily give donations of £3, £5, or £10 to Time and Talents, Surrey Docks Farm or The Mayor of Southwark's Common Good Trust.

Ian Moore, centre manager, said: “This festive season, it seems only right to focus on supporting the people, charities and organisations who have gone above and beyond to help the people most in need in our community.

“We hope our customers will enjoy reversing the role of Santa and giving back to these amazing organisations that help people across our local area.”

The Mayor of Southwark’s Common Good Trust provides items such as household goods, school uniform or baby essentials to those in need.

During the pandemic, its volunteers have been giving food hampers out to

Recipients included a nurse, a midwife, and a dedicated older brother who helped one of the school’s students during the school closure. the community. The second charity, Surrey Docks Farm is a working community farm which also runs workshops and community projects.

Those involved learn and experience a range of things including animal care, food growing, and healthy eating, spending as much time as possible being active outdoors.

Meanwhile Time and Talents has been running for 133 years to connect the local community and reduce loneliness with its projects.

The Rotherhithe institution launched a Covid-19 emergency relief food hub during the pandemic which continues to deliver essential food supplies weekly to local households most in need.

The shopping centre has also launched a competition to reward someone who has gone out of their way to support the local community this year with £250 to spend on themselves at Surrey Quays as ‘thank you’.

sprinkle of magic Christmas cheer in Peckham Harris Academies have delivered more than 1,300 frozen meals for families in Peckham throughout the holidays.

The food, for pupils from Harris Academy Peckham, Harris Free Primary School Peckham and Harris Primary Academy Peckham Park, was provided by investment firm Barings as part of an initiative run by the Thomas Franks Foundation. It includes sausage and mash, and bean chilli and rice.

Rebecca Hickey, Executive Principal of Harris Academy Peckham said: “This Christmas gift could not have come at a more crucial time for our students and their families.

“Many have experienced extreme hardship in the last few months, so to be able to offer hot meals is a tremendous support. Quite literally, a sprinkle of magic Christmas cheer!”

Burgess Park Pre-School have either a bike or a scooter, it is hoped that this new bike will help build her confidence.

“The partnership with Bikeworks will not only enable them to stay safe, fit and healthy whilst at nursery.”

Mystery donor in east Dulwich gives £4,000 Goose Green Solidarity fund received a £4k boost from a mystery donor.

The fund, one of several to crop up across Southwark since Mutual Aid groups were formed in March, provides no-strings financial support to anyone who needs it within a set postcode.

It is funded by neighbours, for their

neighbours.

As featured in the News, the initiatives had called for extra support in the run up to Christmas to help residents with their bills and other basic costs.

A £10,000 fundraiser has been exceeded - with a very generous anonymous donor giving a surprise £4,000 toward people living in the

Goose Green area.

The funds organisers said they were ‘astonished’ at the support - which would help hundreds across London.

“We are a bit overwhelmed really,” they Tweeted. “ This is the principle of wealth redistribution but it's still incredible to see it in action.”

More than a hundred King’s College Hospital NNS Trust staff came together - virtually - for a Christmas single.

In a new rendition of ‘O Holy Night’, the choir is joined by several staff musicians including Consultant Neurosurgeon Professor Keyoumars Ashkan and his patient Dagmar Turner - who underwent brain surgery in January this year.

Violinist Dagmar, who plays in Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra, was filmed playing the instrument during her surgery to ensure it did not affect her hand movements. Professor Ashkan provides the piano accompaniment on the recording.

Angels on duty this christmas King’s College Hospital’s chief executive has paid tribute to the heroic staff working throughout Christmas and New Year as the nation braces for the worst phase of the pandemic.

Professor Clive Kay said: “From providing patients with 24-hour care, to ensuring our hospitals are clean and safe, hundreds of our fantastic colleagues come together to keep King’s running during the festive season.

“Our staff provide an excellent service to those who are in greatest need every day of the year, and everyone works extremely hard to try and make Christmas a happy time for patients and their families.

“Many staff forego time with their own families to work over Christmas and look after our patients, and their hard work and commitment makes a huge difference.”

One of those who will be on the front line of care on Christmas Day is dementia ward manager Mable Maphosa, from Camberwell.

“I work on a dementia specialist ward. I’m responsible for the rota and scheduled myself to work this Christmas,” she said.

“If I’m not working on Christmas Day, it is always my tradition that I cook or

bake for my staff.

“I come into work, lay the table for my staff and surprise them.

“I go round giving my patients presents and the smile on their faces just makes it more special.

“I also come and give gifts and cards thanking my staff for their support and hard work.

“Before the pandemic, my 10-yearold daughter would come and take the presents round - this always put a smile on their face - and she sang for them.

“This day is special from other days, as most staff that work on this day have left their loved ones to spend Christmas with their patients.

“They make this day special for patients; playing Christmas carols and ensuring our patients don’t miss out on this special day.

“Our patients get loads of treats, presents, pampering, Christmas music, the atmosphere is just great on my ward and we try and make it fun for the patients.

“We have a piano on the ward, so if there is someone who can play there will be some tunes being played along.

“In spite of COVID-19 we are still going to have fun this Christmas! I’m happy to share the festive season with my staff and patients this year.”

millwall community fighting child hunger

Millwall FC, its fans, and its community trust will be handing out 100 hot meals a day for disadvantaged kids over Christmas.

The project builds on the work over the October half-term, where more than 500 meals were provided to children.

Chefs at the football club will be preparing the meals and passing them on at cost price, so that the most amount of people possible can benefit from them.

My top ten thank yous go to...

T

he COVID pandemic remains frightening and still threatens our health and economic wellbeing. But it has brought out the best in so many so here’s my top 10 I want to personally thank.

1 NHS staff who went into work even when there weren’t enough masks and personal protective equipment to guarantee their safety. They saved all those they could and held the hands of those who passed away.

All the NHS stepped up from the cleaners to the student nurses who had to work in the Intensive Care Units.

2 Our care home and home care staff looking after the elderly and disabled. Like NHS staff they were working without proper PPE to start with. This pandemic should be the reminder, if anyone needed it, that this should not be low-paid but is vital highly skilled work.

3 The council staff who emptied our bins and carried on all the essential services, from cleaning our streets to safeguarding children at risk. My doorstep claps were for them too.

ecember began with low temperatures bringing the first taste of winter.

Conditions often get milder towards Christmas as rain and south westerly winds move in. However, weather patterns are more unpredictable and forecasts seem less reliable.

Bright, cold sunny days are ideal for working in the garden. Currently, the ground is water logged and so it’s not possible to do much digging or planting this month.

Raking leaves, tidying and pruning fruit and other deciduous trees are key tasks that can be done.

This year’s winter Solstice fell on December 21st the astronomical start of winter and shortest day -

4 Our scientists. If anything can save us from this pandemic, it’s the vaccine. It was developed by scientists in Britain and all over the world working at breakneck speed.

I can’t wait for my jab. Let’s hear no more disparagement of experts.

These expert scientists are literally going to save our lives.

5 The food banks, and all the shops and individuals who donated to them, and the volunteers who run them. It shouldn’t be necessary, but with so many losing some or all of their income and with the government compensation so woefully inadequate, food banks have been a lifeline. And they’ve made sure that those coming to get food for their families not only get the very best quality food but keep their dignity. The shame is on the government for failing to ensure people have enough money to eat, not on those who - despite working hard - have fallen through the net.

6 Local businesses who’ve responded to the endless rule changes and changed what they do in order to keep their employees in work. I

hope they are all able to carry on and I’m pressing the government to increase the help for local businesses. It would be a travesty if even more brilliant local businesses go to the wall because they can’t operate during the lockdown.

This is especially the case for the restaurants, bars and cafes and our vibrant artistic and creative community here in Southwark.

We need our arts and I will be demanding that at the end of this the government properly invest in our culture.

7 Our teachers and all the staff who have kept our schools open and who’ve kept children safe in school and taught them online at home. I'm fighting for better compensation for all the extra costs and more laptops for the kids who don’t have the devices they need for home learning online.

8 Our shop workers, for providing a vital public service we all rely on, and have faced angry and frustrated shoppers complaining about queuing and shortages. I'm grateful for their patience and resilience. And let’s not forget those delivery drivers who’ve got supplies out - including to those who have been shielding and not able to leave home.

9 Our transport staff who went out to work to keep the buses and trains going when everyone else who could was working from home.

10 Our postal workers who delivered our post everyday even at the height of lockdown.

And to my incredible parliamentary office team who helped constituents stranded abroad to get back home at the start of the pandemic, help with Universal Credit claims, housing, immigration and all the other problems which the pandemic is making worse.

Thank you all so much. The spirit of the people of Southwark is inspiring.

Happy Christmas and let’s hope for a very much better 2021.

Holly, Ivy and Mistletoe the legends of Christmas

when the northern hemisphere is farthest away from the sun. Once Solstice is passed - daylight hours will gradually begin to lengthen.

There are three plants, steeped in folklore and mystery, which are the focus of the festive season – Holly, Ivy and Mistletoe.

Mistletoe is the traditional plant of midwinter with significance at Christmas. It bears white berries around the winter Solstice and is an ancient symbol of immortality.

This mysterious plant grows as an evergreen parasitic shrub and can appear on almost any deciduous tree but seems to prefer oak and old apple trees. Mistletoe is a shrub that chooses where it wants to grow – it is not easy to propagate.

Ivy is a hardy, vigorous evergreen climber with an interesting folklore history. The ancients used the leaves for the poet’s crown and it is a symbol of fidelity. This plant is dedicated to Bacchus (Greek God of wine). Ivy can live for hundreds of years and reach

tree like proportions with tough woody stems resembling branches.

The custom of decorating the house with Ivy dates back to pagan times.

Holly has year-round interest and is usually seen as a large shrub – but over time it will grow into a handsome tree; with distinctive shiny dark evergreen leaves, small white flowers (in May) and blood red berries in winter. Holly grows well in shady areas – and the birds love it.

Folklore associated with Holly predates Roman times, but it is known that the Romans gave branches of Holly to family and friends during the Festival of Saturnalia - a holiday celebrated at winter Solstice around the third week in December. Holly is traditionally meant to bring protection and good luck. The Druids believe that Holly brings foresight in times of hardship and sacrifice – and is a sign of better times to come. ‘Deck the halls with boughs of Holly’ Season’s Greetings and Happy Gardening!

For many people Christmas is usually a time for catching up with friends, raising a glass and embracing loved ones. But this Christmas will look very different for most families across the UK, including those sadly affected by heart and circulatory diseases.

There are around 620,000 people in Greater London living with heart and circulatory diseases, including coronary heart disease, stroke and vascular dementia. We know from the millions of people that have turned to us for support this year that so many people with heart and circulatory diseases are worried about their greater risk from Covid-19 and the many have been shielding.

With your support, we’ve worked tirelessly to be there for people – extending our Heart Helpline’s opening hours, providing valuable Covid-19 information and continuing to fund research with the promise of improved treatments. Even over Christmas, our Heart Helpline will be open for those who need us most.

But we need your support now more than ever to continue this vital work. The closure of our shops and cancellation of fundraising events has had a devastating impact on our funds, putting life saving discoveries in peril. We expect our income to be cut in half this year alone.

Traditionally Christmas is a time for giving and generosity. Whilst some Christmas traditions may have changed this year, we hope this one hasn’t.

I think the council and the centre both tried to negotiate the lease in good faith. The process took far longer than it should have - I don't believe because the council had an ulterior motive though. The centre has certainly had other sources of funding beyond the council. The delays in the lease though made it harder to secure external funding (as potential funders could not be certain of the centre's continuation without one). In addition, COVID made it difficult to find funding for a centre that couldn't open for large events.

Proud to highlight our Christmas Angels

A

Christmas like no other. That’s perhaps the best way to describe this year’s festive celebrations.

Last weekend, when the Government announced Tier 4 restrictions, it might have been tempting to say that Christmas was cancelled.

We are not allowed to see our friends and family in other households here in Southwark.

Most will accept this is for good reason: We cannot falter in our efforts to beat the virus until the vulnerable are vaccinated.

But Christmas is not cancelled. In fact, up and down the length of the borough, residents are going out of their way to help each other this festive season.

People are reaching into their pockets to donate money; to make food hampers for those in need; to give presents and toys to children who might not otherwise have them.

That’s the true essence of Christmas, and the

true essence of Southwark.

We’re proud, as your newspaper, to highlight these good deeds in our three-page special feature on our ‘Christmas Angels’.

This Christmas is much-needed in what has been a long and difficult year for the borough and for the country.

Like everybody else, we’ll be taking a break, too: We miss an issue on December 31, and will be back in print on January 7.

But the news never sleeps - so fear not, as we will be updating you online at southwarknews. co.uk with the top news stories as and when they happen.

Wherever you are in the borough, and however you are spending this most unusual of Tier 4 Christmases, we hope you find it a restful time.

A bunker has been built in Lambeth Palace - and the apocalypse is inside.

The Lambeth Apocalypse is a 13th-century illuminated text, and one of the keystone pieces of the Palace’s library.

A bunker has been built to safely store the Palace’s books. “Noah could float past in his ark and the collection would be all right,” the architect behind it tells the Guardian.

The Apocalypse is a “lurid” tale of the end of the world - so a book which perfectly captures the times.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that on 17 December 2020 it has made the above experimental Orders under sections 9 and 10 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

2. The effects of the experimental Orders, the intention of which is to improve local air quality, promote social distancing, exercise local to home, and sustainable travel (walking and cycling), and to deter motor vehicle through traffic in the Brunswick Park area, as part of the Guy's and St Thomas' Charity programme, will be:(a) to introduce point road closures prohibiting the movement of motor vehicles, with certain exemptions including that of emergency services access, which will be physically enforced with traffic signs and the installation of planters and flexible bollards, in the following locations:(i) HAVIL STREET, at its junction with Southampton Way (no access to Havil Street from SOUTHAMPTON WAY or RAINBOW STREET), and (ii) ELMINGTON ROAD, at the common boundary of Nos. 146 and 148 Elmington Road; (b) to introduce part road closures prohibiting the movement of motor vehicles, with certain exemptions including that of emergency services access, which will be physically enforced with traffic signs and the installation of planters and flexible bollards, at the following locations:i) that part of BENHILL ROAD which lies between the south-eastern kerb-line of Elmington Road and a point 10 metres south of that kerb-line (no access from ELMINGTON ROAD to the part of Benhill Road south of its junction), and (ii) that part of DALWOOD STREET which lies between the north-eastern kerb-line of Havil Street and a point 15.5 metres north-east of that kerb-line (no access to Dalwood Street from HAVIL STREET); and (c) in ELMINGTON ROAD within CPZ ‘EC’, on both sides from a point 1.5 metres north-east of the common boundary of Nos. 142 and 144 Elmington Road to a point 1 metre north-east of the common boundary of Nos. 148 and 150 Elmington Road, to (i) suspend 15 metres per side of existing permit holders’ parking places splitting existing parking bays, and (ii) to add new ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions (30 metres in total).

Southwark Council hereby GIVES FURTHER NOTICE that, in conjunction with the above measures, it intends to construct a ‘shared-use’ cycle track for use of both pedal cycles and pedestrians under section 65(1) of the Road Highways Act 1980, at the following location:SOUTHAMPTON WAY at LIDGATE ROAD – a two-way cycle track comprising the full width of the north-eastern footway of Southampton Way extending from the north-eastern kerb-line of Southampton Way to the south-western carriageway extremity of Lidgate Road, and is bounded on the north-west by a line extended from the north-western kerb-line of Lidgate Road and on the south-east by a line extended from the south-eastern kerb-line of Lidgate Road.

By Simeon Wright sport@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET chairman Ben Clasper is hopeful that an independent report will shine some light on the National League’s controversial split of its first bailout payments, which the club maintains was “wrong.”

The League came under fire in October when it failed to distribute the first instalment of a £10m rescue package based on average gate receipts – Dulwich Hamlet are due another payment on top of the £36,000 they received that month, but Clasper remains unhappy with the League’s actions.

Speaking before the Hamlet’s 2-1 FA Trophy third-round defeat to Hornchurch at Champion Hill, Clasper told the News: “There’s another amount of money which is supposed to be for sports in the winter – January, February, March. We know the number but we don’t know what the basis of the distribution is going to be, and we’re still fighting the National League’s distribution of the last lot.

“Their [the National League’s] independent panel produced a report this week that went back to the board, and the board [haven’t yet published it], which you can only deduce means it’s critical of what they did. Hopefully they will see sense, someone will publish the report, and we’ll know where we all stand.”

Last week’s FA Trophy second-round match at home to Cheshunt was set to have fans in attendance, before the sudden news that London would move into Tier 3 on Wednesday, December 16. It was another curveball which forced Dulwich’s hand to close the

doors once more.

Clasper said: “We don’t mind it changing because it has to, but it’s the speed at which it changes and the notice you’re getting before each game that’s our biggest frustration.

“Tuesday [December 15] we were playing with fans, then we found out on Monday afternoon that we might not. It took between Monday night and Tuesday lunchtime to speak to all the authorities, and you’re literally calling games off with hours to spare.

“It’s obviously a hard decision to make because the fan base is split.

There are some who just want to come and feel they can manage their own risk. But, ultimately, it falls on us because the legislation says that we could have fans.

“The steer you get from authorities is, ‘well, we can’t stop you, but this is what we think’. We felt it was the right decision not to have fans [at the Cheshunt game].”

It was confirmed at the beginning of this month that National League chief executive Michael Tattersall would be stepping down from his position on December 31 – another development which Clasper is unclear about.

He added: “We don’t know [if it’s to do with the bailout dispute], they haven’t told us anything about that either. They have chosen not to tell us anything about anything when it comes to these last few months.

“We just hope that that report is published in full so people know what position they’ll be in for next year.”

The Dulwich Hamlet chair also praised the club’s sponsors, who have continued to play a key part in the challenges through the coronavirus pandemic.

“Our sponsors have been hugely supportive – hats off to them because they’re struggling, too,” Clasper said.

“Bulb, our major sponsor, have been unbelievably supportive, as

have some of the local ones like Sea Tickets. They help us with all our engagement with ticketing, and now we’re just starting to talk to other local ones who are really stepping up. That’s the only other source of income we’ve got.

“On paper, no one is worse off [than Dulwich Hamlet] simply because we get the largest attendances and therefore have lost the most revenue.

But we also have a lower cost base, as a lot of clubs are more established than us and have been at this level for longer with higher costs, so I can understand why they’re saying it shouldn’t all be about lost revenue.

“Many of the clubs I speak to are worried about paying the bills at the end of December, others it’s January, and others it’s February.

“But no one is in a position where they’re going to be fine - unless you’re one of the lucky clubs who got paid too much money.”

‘Incredible support’ for Lionesses’ ‘Santa Dash’ Millwall fans step up to the plate again when charity calls

Swirling rain distorted the second half of a match which had been one of impressive quality in the opening 45 minutes – the deteriorating conditions seeming to coincide with news from Number 10 Downing Street that London would move into the new Tier 4 restrictions.

Former Millwall graduate Jesse Debrah could have had a couple in the first half – Jordan Higg’s lofted free-kick found the young centre-half, who spun sixteen yards from goal but could only drill his shot straight into the gloves of Joe Wright.

A positive from the season so far for the Hamlet has been the return to fitness of Reise Allassani, who played just behind strikers Danny Mills and Deon Moore to form a dangerous MMA front-three – Allassani was chopped down from behind by Hornchurch midfielder Joe Christou in the 55th minute, much to Dulwich boss Gavin Rose’s displeasure.

With the match of course behind closed doors, Rose could be heard saying “what was that?” to the fourth official.

Allassani quickly got up, but proceedings stopped for five minutes soon after when Hornchurch’s Charlie Nash was stretchered off having come out worse from a very audible collision.

It wasn’t until the 85th minute that conditions became extreme, as the floodlights emphasised the directionless downpour – one minute later, Ruff squeezed a close-range effort under the body of Grainger for the Isthmian League team’s winner.

Dulwich Hamlet went in search of a late response, but Hornchurch skipper Rickie Hayles, a centre-half once of the Hamlet, blocked Allassani’s shot inches from the goal-line.

Dulwich are back in league action on Boxing Day when they host Welling United at Champion Hill.

Last Saturday’s 1-1 stalemate with Nottingham Forest was the seventeenth time this calendar year the Lions have shared the spoils in a league game.

This was one that disappointed boss Gary Rowett because it was a contest that Millwall dominated and will feel they should have taken all three points from.

Another alarming alert for the Lions chief is that his side have now dropped a total of eight points from winning positions this season.

Millwall are also struggling at The Den. The absence of fans has affected the Lions more than most sides. Since the return of football in June, they have won just three league games on their own patch compared to six on the road.

Millwall went in front against Cardiff and Reading in back-to-back games at The Den in late November before being pegged back. It was the same story against Nottingham Forest, and the same score-line.

However, there was encouragement.

The 3-0 defeat at Middlesbrough seems to have sparked a response in the players.

It was the first time this season that Rowett had been able to name the same starting side for two matches in a row.

The system with four at the back has brought Millwall three of their five league wins this season, which values the argument that Rowett should start with four defenders more regularly instead of the five which albeit was very successful away from home last season.

Millwall’s problem this campaign has been finding the back of the net. They have scored just seventeen goals in 20 games. To put that in context, Brentford’s Ivan Toney, the league’s top scorer, has scored sixteen Championship goals this season.

On Saturday, the Lions started as if they were hungry to boost that tally. The hosts were on the front foot from the get-go and saw another penalty claim dismissed after five minutes.

Jed Wallace spun and his shot clearly hit the arm of Forest defender Loic Mbe Soh, but referee Oliver Langford ignored the claims. Replays on the Den’s big screen showed Mbe Soh had stuck out his arm to direct Wallace’s shot out for a corner.

Forest do possess dangerous players in the likes of former Millwall striker Lewis Grabban, and he almost got on the end of a dangerous cross into the box after eight minutes. Soh was involved a couple minutes later, heading a set-piece delivery onto the post but Langford had blown for a

Millwall free-kick.

From that free-kick Mason Bennett forced a save from Brice Samba. Bennett was looking for a repeat of that brilliant curling effort that found the bottom corner at Ashton Gate four days earlier, but Samba denied him.

The Lions’ dominance continued until half-time. Jed Wallace forced another save from Samba with a 38th-minute free-kick.

Samba, the much busier of the goalkeepers, was then equal to Shaun Williams’ longrange effort just before the break.

Millwall finally turned their dominance into a goal two minutes after the interval.

Tom Bradshaw had netted his second of the season at Bristol City and followed it up with his third here. Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, who has been steadily improving and forcing his manager’s hand to include him in his starting line-up in recent weeks, surged down the left before picking out Bradshaw, who finished smartly to give the hosts the goal they deserved.

Rowett has lamented the fact most of the goals his side have given away this season have been cheap, and he would have added this next one to that list.

Two minutes after going behind, Forest were level, a simple long ball over the defence was left intelligently by Grabban to allow Alex Mighten to sneak in and finish confidently past Bart Bialkowski.

that on 56 minutes. He broke into the eighteen-yard box but couldn’t decide whether or not he wanted to shoot or set up a team-mate. He unconvincingly took the latter option but it was obvious he was in two minds as the ball drifted into no man’s land before rolling harmlessly wide.

Another positive for Millwall over the last two games has been the emergence of a new attacking partnership. Bradshaw and Bodvarsson are two players who had been on the fringes this season, but between them they have been directly involved in three of Millwall’s last four goals.

Former Barnsley striker Bradshaw has two goals in two games, and he has proved that when he scores he can hit a purple patch. The striker scored seven goals in seven games during September and October last year.

Bodvarsson should also be praised for the character he has shown since that awful miss against Cardiff in November. He has got his head down and showed he has that bit of nous needed when his team are fighting so hard for results.

As soon as their games resume after the Covid outbreak in their squad, there is ground for optimism going into 2021.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IT’S ONE of football’s main clichés repeated by players and managers: Keep your head down, take your chance when it arrives, and you’ll get your rewards.

Tom Bradshaw has been the personification of that in recent games.

Bradshaw, 28, has made just seven league starts this season, and started back-to-back league games for the first time this season this month.

But he grasped his opportunities, scoring against Bristol City and Nottingham Forest to help his side collect four points heading into what should have been a buoyant festive period before a Covid-19 outbreak in the Lions squad forced the postponement of two games.

Bradshaw faced increased competition for his place this campaign after the arrivals of Troy Parrott and Kenneth Zohore on loan from Tottenham and West Brom.

Despite six weeks without a start, Bradshaw showed little rustiness as he set the Lions on their way to victory against the Robins with a goal after seventeen minutes at Ashton Gate.

He was determined to make an impact when called upon by Gary Rowett.

“We’ve got a bigger squad this year than we had last year and it’s been very much needed with the shear amount of games,” Bradshaw said. “The gaffer has changed the team quite a few times to cope with that.

“Even if you’re not playing as many games as you’d like, you’ve always got to be ready, especially this season more than most.

“I like to think I’m a good professional, I stay on top of my fitness and try to show the gaffer what I can do.

“So when I got the nod against Bristol away I was really eager to impress and get a good result for the team. That’s what happened and it was good to back it up in the Forest game.

“That’s what it’s about, getting results, doing your best to stay in the team and scoring goals.

“When you’re scoring goals and they’re flowing you want to play as many games as possible. So from that perspective I’m a little bit gutted that the games aren’t going ahead.

“But I’m viewing it as I can spend more time at Christmas with my family and just to freshen up all round. I’ll be ready and raring to go on January 2 against Coventry.”

Bradshaw’s recent mini-resurgence will feel familiar to Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.

The Iceland international has bad luck to nail down a first-team place since his move from Reading in the summer of 2019, starting just nineteen games in the league.

Bodvarsson’s struggles seemed to be summed up when he missed an excellent chance to put Millwall ahead late on in their game against Cardiff in November.

But he was praised by Rowett for his mental toughness after bouncing back to get his first goal of the season against QPR a couple of weeks later.

Bodvarsson, 28, has led the line for Millwall in their last two games, setting up Bradshaw for his goal against Forest.

“Me and Jon this season have struggled to keep a place in the starting line-up, so the fact we’ve played so well together and picked up two decent results as well has been a great feeling,” Bradshaw said.

“Our partnership seems to be working really well at the moment, so long that may that continue.”

Bradshaw played just behind Bodvarsson in a 4-4-1-1 formation in the last two games. That goal against Forest showed their understanding, as Bradshaw set his team-mate away down the left before timing his run into the box, pointing to the space in front of him, and then side-footing Bodvarsson’s clever cut-back past Brice Samba.

Bradshaw said: “It’s one of the things you work on, you work on multiple ways of getting into the final third and scoring goals.

“He did really well to drive at the centre-back and open that space. And it was the perfect ball for me as well because it didn’t bounce in front of me at pace, it was a great weight. As long as you get the contact right it should end up in the back of the net.

“It was a great ball and great work from Jon. I really appreciated it, being in that position, and getting a relatively easy tap-in, really.”

Bradshaw will be denied an immediate chance to continue his run of scoring form, after Millwall’s games against Bournemouth on Boxing Day and Watford three days later were called off.

Bradshaw wasn’t one of the positive

Covid tests in the squad. He was desperate to play against the Cherries, but is putting things in perspective this Christmas.

“It’s almost back to square one in terms of individual training and smallgroup training. It’s a bit of déjà vu from earlier in the coronavirus pandemic,” Bradshaw said.

“I think it’s a lot easier this time. Last time it was really prolonged over a matter of months rather than a week to ten days. It should be a lot easier this

time to maintain fitness.

“And it could actually be a positive as well because a lot of lads in the team have played three games a week for a couple of months, really.

“That will work in our favour. In terms of maintaining fitness I don’t think it will be too much of an issue. Hopefully it will give everyone a chance to freshen up for the games in the New Year.

“It’s one of those rare occasions where it’s worked out quite well. It’s almost non-existent in football that you don’t

have a game on Boxing Day. So from that perspective there are positives to take out of it, the lads will get to spend Christmas with their families.

“That’s the way we’re viewing it, more positively rather than the fact that it’s two games postponed.

“It’s not great for the fans, and for me I’m loving my football at the moment so I want to play as many games as possible.

“But you’ve got to take the positives out of the situation.”

Sky’s the limit: broadcaster apologises

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL HAVE accepted an apology from Sky Sports after the club lodged a complaint over certain aspects of the broadcaster’s coverage around the game against QPR.

Before the London derby at The Den earlier this month, Sky claimed that some Millwall players would take the knee despite the club having issued a statement explaining the squad would be not be making the gesture and instead uniting with Hoops players behind

an anti-discrimination banner.

Sky pundits were also critical of a letter the club had sent fans which said, “the eyes of the world are on this football club tonight - your club - and they want us to fail.

“Together as one, we will not let that happen.”

Lions fans at The Den applauded when their players and QPR’s came together before kick-off.

In a statement, the club said: “Millwall Football Club can confirm that it has held positive and progressive talks with Sky Sports following a comprehensive and detailed complaint regarding

the broadcaster’s coverage of its fixture against QPR earlier this month.

“In meetings mediated by The EFL, Sky Sports have acknowledged that certain elements of the coverage on the day, during their on-air discussion pre-match and the following day were not as fair and balanced as they should have been and have apologised.

“The club has accepted that apology and considers this issue now closed. Millwall hopes for a more mutually beneficial relationship with Sky Sports moving forward.”

“But it’s not going to be completely in our hands anyway, it’s going to be down to what West Brom want to do.

“The main scenario around it is we need him to play games, but looking at it at the moment it’s going to be hard for him to play the relevant amount of games.

“It’s one where we’ll see where we’re at in January. We’re obviously looking at that area and that market should anything happen.

“We’d love to be able to keep Ken, but we want that to be a fit Ken Zohore that can contribute to the second half of the season and not be someone that’s unavailable. That’s important to us.

Meanwhile, it was déjà vu for Millwall after the postponement of their festive schedule. Some Lions players are selfisolating, while the rest of the squad have to try to maintain their fitness head of the game against Coventry with the training ground shut this week.

Rowett said: “It’s disappointing because obviously we had a bit of momentum from two games. As any manager will tell you when you’ve had games where you won one and probably should have won the other, you want to keep going, keep playing and use that momentum.

“We’re going to have to do our best to maintain the fitness. Hopefully we’ll be able to go back to some sort of contact training just before Coventry. So I don’t think we’ll be going into it completely cold.”

Millwall reveal extent of losses

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL’S REVENUE is down eleven per cent, “mainly as a result of Covid curtailments”, according to an analysis of their most recent accounts.

The club’s losses doubled to £10million in 2019-20, with loan repayments to owner John Berylson deferred until 2022.

The Lions also saw their wage bill go up by twelve per cent to an average of just over £9,000 per week. That is £115 for every £100 of revenue.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire pointed out: “By Championship standards these losses are low, and remember for most other clubs figures are for the previous season, pre-Covid.

“Most other clubs have not reported for 2019-20 but Millwall are in the bottom third of the league, by the looks of things.”

Like a lot of clubs, Millwall’s broadcast income is also down while income from ticket sales dropped a fifth, with all but two home games – and even then there were only 2,000 fans at The Den – played behind closed doors since March.

Investors pumped in £8million in the form of Class B shares to cover losses.

Millwall showed a profit of just £80,000 on player sales in their 2019-20 accounts, compared to £5.4million in the previous accounts after George Saville’s £7million move to Middlesbrough.

Millwall’s finances were further hit this week after the postponement of their games against Bournemouth and Watford due to a Covid outbreak in their squad.
