Darren Henaghan, the managing director of the market, said traders would be severely impacted by any disruption on the border because they both import and export food.

The government is locked into last-ditch talks with the European Union to secure a deal by December 31, raising the prospect of no agreement being struck.

Mr Henaghan told LBC News that the market had already begun hoarding cheese, pallets of charcuterie, flour and olive oil.

“People are bringing things in early in anticipation that something's going to happen which is going to make it more difficult,” he said.

"It buys us some time because there's going to be confusion at the ports, and things are going to get blocked.”

Some traders export beef and British cheese into Europe, he said, while others import items such as mozzarella and parma ham from European countries.

He warned that there might be an impact on prices at the market as a result of no deal, “because those tariffs will need to be swallowed by the trader or they will be

passed onto the traders.”

“At the moment we’re stockpiling, we’ve got pallets of everything we can from Europe,” he said.

“What we don't want is some burrata, some very, very valuable but also delicate

product like soft Italian cheese, sitting in a queue in Calais cooking nicely in the back of the van, because by the time it gets here there would be no point bringing it through.”

He added that during the week it has

become very quiet during the week. “The impact of Covid has been particularly profound,” he said. “Earlier in the week it’s very quiet, but at the weekend it gets busy.”

He added: “But it's constantly exhausting … it’s been a very difficult year for us.”

Gloria Goldring created her own CMC care plan after a stressful end of life experience when her husband David was critically ill at a care home.

He suffered from dementia and despite both agreeing that he did not wish to be resuscitated in a critical emergency, Gloria was told by paramedics that without paperwork to prove his end of life wishes, they would resuscitate David in the ambulance if needed.

“It was a big shock to me because this was something David and I had discussed many years ago and I just felt completely at a loss’, she explained.

During the short trip to hospital David did not deteriorate and after Gloria explained to hospital staff that David had said he did not want to be resuscitated, this wish was accepted.

“So when CMC was introduced as a way

to be able to flag this up I thought this was absolutely an essential for people to understand,” she continued.

“I think there is no doubt if we had a plan it would have been flagged up. This would have lessened the stress that I was under because I was in a very terrible state.”

“As the coronavirus pandemic continues, we are hearing that many patients and families are talking about difficult futures, challenging decisions and appropriate treatments,” she said.

“This partnership with the Health Innovation Network means that health care services across the community will be supported to encourage increasing numbers of patients to have a digital CMC record, to ensure their wishes are recorded, to better their outcomes and to support the urgent care services.”

Digital urgent care plans will respect patients’ wishes

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A £200,000 plan to digitalise patients’ urgent care plans across the NHS is being rolled out in London.

The initiative, led by the Southwarkbased Health Innovation Network, will mean health and social care professionals including paramedics, emergency doctors and nurses, 111 operators and out of hours GPs are kept up to date with patients’ wishes.

Named ‘Coordinate My Care’, the digital system gives patients the opportunity to make it clear how they wish to be cared for, including whether they want to stay at home, be hospitalised, and if they want to be resuscitated. The most up to date information is then shared between professionals.

“When I saw other parishes doing it, it just clicked as something right for us,” the mum of three said.

“It made a nice change on our community Whatsapp group from talking about bins and parking!”

Carrie says if there is any positive to be taken from COVID-19 it is that her community - a mix of renters,

homeowners, people who have lived in Dulwich for decades and newer arrivals - has become closer.

“During lockdown I helped a shielding neighbour with her shopping and when I’ve had to self isolate neighbours have helped me.

“Any events we were planning to hold had to be cancelled, but hopefully we can get together more next year.”

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The COVID-19 rate in Southwark shot up by 77 per cent last week, as officials warned a ‘new variant’ of the virus could be behind spiralling infections in London and the south-east.

As of December 10, the seven-day case rate in Southwark had risen by 76.9 per cent to 202.9 people per 100,000.

Last week London recorded 24,000 new infections, with every borough seeing their number of cases growing.

On Monday, after intense speculation an announcement was coming early, Matt Hancock confirmed London

was moving into tougher tier 3 on Wednesday, along with much of the south-east.

He warned that a new strain could be behind the rapid rise in cases, but sought to reassure the public that there was ‘no evidence’ the vaccine would be less effective against this particular mutation.

All hospitality venues are now closed except for takeaway, and indoor mixing banned except for with support bubbles.

At the time of going to press, fears were also growing that a Christmas break from strict lockdown rules could also be scrapped.

The latest available government data, covering the seven days up until

December 10, showed how Southwark has quickly gone from being one of the least affected areas in London to a new Coronavirus hotspot.

In that period more than 600 people were officially diagnosed with the virus - the biggest spike in London in those seven days.

Exponential rises are particularly worrying this month in light of flu season, the potential for indoor mixing over Christmas, and an already strained NHS. On Monday, December 7, the daily number of lab-confirmed positive COVID-19 cases in Southwark surpassed 100 for the first time ever. A day earlier, 46 new cases were recorded. Although these high figures can partly be attributed to increased testing capacity - during the first wave just 59 cases were recorded on April 1 - this does not explain how daily figures could double in such a short period.

The figures appear to back up concerns that infections would grow after restrictions were eased on December 2.

Three days later, on December 5, Southwark had 66 new COVID-19 cases confirmed by tests; rising to 106 cases on December 7; 120 the following day; and to 149 by Friday 11. Hospital admissions have also shown a marked rise in the last fortnight.

The number of deaths in Southwark within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test now totals 175, with 260 deaths listing the virus as a contributing factor on the death certificate since March.

In the starkest sign yet that the rising number of infections is a huge threat, four of those deaths were recorded in November, and two in December so far.

No COVID-19 deaths had been recorded in Southwark throughout September or October.

Thumbs up from the first vaccine patients

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Ninety eight year old Kenneth and 80-year-old Ann became the first King's patients to be vaccinated for COVID-19 last week.

South Londoner Kenneth Coley was vaccinated at King's College Hospital in Denmark Hill and Bromley-based Ann Russell was the first to be given the vaccine at Princess Royal University Hospital.

“I’m very fortunate to have been chosen to have the vaccine, I thought I was too old,” Kenneth said. “If you want to fight the virus you have to get vaccinated.”

When asked if he had any nerves about the inoculation, he said: “No. I’d be stupid not to have it.”

Kenneth was given a round of applause by ward staff after receiving the first dose of the vaccine. He will have the second dose in 21 days’ time.

Ann said she was "very happy' to be

vaccinated and hoped others would follow suit.

"Seeing me get it might just encourage others to get it too," she said. "Hopefully, the vaccine will make life better for all of us.”

Professor Clive Kay, King’s chief executive, hailed the 'remarkable day' for the NHS. "We are incredibly proud to have begun vaccinating our first patients against COVID-19," he said.

“I would like to thank our staff for their tremendous work, both to enable the rollout of the vaccination programme in such a space of time, and throughout the year to care for our patients.”

King’s College Hospital and the Princess Royal University Hospital are among 50 hubs in England that have been designated to deliver the COVID-19 vaccine.

Included in the first group of people to be vaccinated are patients aged 80 and over, including outpatients and inpatients who are soon to be discharged after a hospital stay.

council leader says think twice about Christmas bubbles

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark is facing a rapid increase in Covid cases, as the council’s boss warns residents to think twice about mixing with family members at Christmas.

Officials at the town hall have been presented with data showing the biggest pace of increase in cases in Southwark since the spring.

Amid a “worrying” surge of new infections, the council’s boss Cllr Kieron Williams told the News he feared the impact of the government’s decision to allow greater mixing for Christmas.

Under the rule relaxations, Southwark families can form bubbles of up to three households between December 23 to 27 - even though the capital has been plunged into harsh tier three restrictions this week.

“I think the government has got it wrong on this,” he said. “We all want Christmas with friends and family, that’s really important for people.

“But I think the message the government has been sending out, that Christmas is more important than anything else, is the wrong one.

“I’d urge people to think very carefully

to do the right thing for your family, and keep your family safe.”

However, Cllr Williams stopped short of calling for others to follow his lead and not take part in Christmas ‘bubbles’ with other households completely, saying: “People are going to have to make their own decisions.”

As the News went to press, Southwark was placed into tier three restrictions, the highest possible level outside of national lockdown.

It means pubs and restaurants have been forced to close, while most socialising outside your household is banned, except in outdoor open spaces subject to limits.

While the borough has seen lower rates generally than other boroughs, new infections are rising rapidly.

“The data that’s just coming out… it’s really worrying,” said the council chief, speaking to this paper on Monday.

“There’s been a big increase in the last three or four days, that’s the biggest increase since April time.

“We have to take action quickly, because only if you do that can we avoid the kind of doubling rates you saw back in spring.”

The increase in new infections is not consigned to any one part of the borough; the only age group who are not showing a particular rise are the under-fives.

Southwark did not ask its schools to close early this week. Greenwich’s council leader had asked its schools to move to online learning, only for the Department for Education to issue a command that they stay open.

Cllr Williams said he felt it was the right move for schools to stay open until the end of term tomorrow, December 17.

Some will have already broken up for the winter break as some schools are taking Friday as an inset day.

Officials hope to use the period while schools are off to prepare for wider ramping up of lateral flow tests in schools in the new year.

Care homes is also another setting where officials will be rolling out the tests.

Even as vaccines are now being rolled out from Southwark’s hospitals - Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s College patients are among those getting the jabs the coronavirus crisis could yet get worse before it gets better.

“This is another really difficult moment,” said Cllr Williams. “Like we all have over the last year, it’s another moment that Southwark residents need to come together to make those changes in our lives needed to get the rates down again.”

stephen O’Rourke is convicted of rocky’s murder in southwark park

news@southwarknews.co.uk Stephen O’Rourke has been convicted of murder, after stabbing to death Rocky Djelal near the children’s playground in Southwark Park on Halloween 2018.

The killer (pictured ), whom the court was told disguised himself as a builder before knifing the 38-year-old, could now face a life sentence.

The Old Bailey trial heard that 48-yearold O’Rourke believed Mr Djelal was responsible for his younger brother’s murder eighteen years before, The court heard how O’Rourke took out a knife from a carrier bag and stabbed Mr Djelal three times before calmly leaving the busy playground, at around 2pm on 31 October 2018 – the anniversary of his brother’s funeral.

The jury was told in the weeks earlier, O’Rourke had become increasingly preoccupied and obsessed with his brother’s death. Just a day before he carried out the murder he sent out messages saying he was ready to kill and ready for his own Valhalla – a reference to Nordic mythology where warriors who are slain live on after their deaths.

In 2000 Mr Djelal had been arrested as part of the investigation into the murder

of 21-year-old Michael O’Rourke, also known as Paddy, but was released without charge. No one has been prosecuted for that killing.

The court was told that O’Rourke had been tracking his victim through the Southwark area over the course of the day.

Although unemployed, he had dressed like a labourer wearing a high visibility jacket, paint-splashed trousers and boots – to blend in with the many workmen nearby.

After the attack Mr Djelal managed to stumble away and others in the park came to his aid.

Mr Djelal’s father and brother rushed to Southwark Park having been alerted to the stabbing and paramedics also arrived soon after. However, Mr Djelal could not be saved and died minutes later.

The police investigation led to O’Rourke and his brother Jason O’Rourke being arrested on 16 November 2018. Jason took his own life at Belmarsh prison while awaiting trial for his alleged part in assisting an offender.

During a search of O’Rourke’s home address police and sniffer dogs found two high visibility jackets and workman boots as well as a number of knives. The murder weapon has never been found.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A new photography book is celebrating Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park’s dogs and their owners.

The park, next to the Imperial War Museum, is a popular canine hangout thanks to the neighbouring Imperial Dog Park and a pet-owner whatsapp group set up to bring the community together.

Park Dogs of London, now on sale, features local 45 dogs including eighteen puppies given homes during lockdown.

Each pet portrait is accompanied by an introduction to the dog and descriptions of life during lockdown by their owners, and group shots of dogs who have become particularly friendly.

Authors Terri Paddock and Peter Jones describe themselves as ‘parents’ to three-year-old cockapoo Lottie.

Last year, they set up a whatsapp group for owners called “Dog Lovers of IWM”, which now has more than 130 members and provided inspiration for their book.

They use the group to coordinate

park drinks, walks, playdates, farewell dos and doggy birthday parties, as well as sharing advice.

“We’d seen other books about pets and thought our fabulously photogenic dogs of the Imperial War Museum deserved their own,” they explained.

“As with everything in our park community, we posted a message in the WhatsApp group to gauge interest – the response was overwhelming.

“As the UK’s second national lockdown approached, the project has been embraced as a way of everyone celebrating the dogs that have helped make this year bearable, as well as the beauty of the park that we frequent so much with them, particularly while people have been furloughed or are working from home.

“Through the group, we found not only dozens of owners volunteering their pets for photoshoots – more than enough for many more volumes – but also two incredible collaborators to create the book.”

Statement released by Rocky’s family: “We are a very close family who adore each other and would do anything to help each other.

“Stephen O’Rourke knew his victim well. Their families had known each other all their lives. But O’Rourke believed that Mr Djelal was responsible for his younger brother’s murder 18 years before. That is why on the anniversary of his brother’s funeral he took it upon himself to carry out what he believed was a revenge killing. In his own words, he was ready to kill and ready for his own Valhalla.

“During the trial O’Rourke claimed that he had stabbed Mr Djelal to defend himself, but using CCTV evidence and witness accounts, the prosecution was able to prove that this was a lie.

“CCTV footage showed that on his way home from the park O’Rourke changed his outer clothing no less than three times, in a clear attempt to distance himself from a man who murdered Rocky Djelal while wearing a high visibility jacket. A bystander also witnessed a chilling smirk on his face as he walked away from the scene of the crime.

“Nothing can ever bring back a loved one, but I hope this conviction goes some way in providing comfort to the family and friends of Rocky Djelal.”

O’Rourke, of Grosvenor Park, Kennington, will return for sentencing on a date yet to be fixed.

Rocky was 38 when he was taken from us. He led a somewhat troubled and chaotic life and had to deal with the consequences of this. However, to us he was a brother, a son, an uncle and most of all a father. His daughter was 16 years old when her Dad was taken from her.

“The park that evening was full of relatives and friends who wanted to support us and remember Rocky. We all stayed in the park while our priest prayed for Rocky, we were there until midnight when the coroner removed his body. Southwark Park is really significant to us as a family and we spent much of our time in this park creating some of our best memories.

It was heartbreaking that we never got to say goodbye and that our final memory of Rocky in this park is one that tore us apart.

“The days leading up to the arrests were torture. We couldn’t function properly, we weren’t eating or sleeping and our bodies were in constant fight or flight mode. When the police released CCTV footage of Rocky’s murderer, we didn’t recognise him and we felt helpless. We really thought we would know who it was and be able to help.

“The police officers handling the investigation were brilliant, they worked tirelessly in finding the people who killed Rocky. When we found out they had Stephen O’Rourke in custody we were in utter shock. They used to live in the same block of flats as us when we were growing up.

“For us Rocky was a gentle giant

with a heart of gold who adored his daughter and loved his family. He was a joker with a light-hearted, carefree approach to life. He was spirited, fearless and had enough courage to walk tall and stand by his principles.

We loved this about him.

“His death has been debilitating for all of us. We miss the individual relationships we had with him and think about him every day. We are all really struggling with the physical, emotional and mental issues that come with losing someone so special to us. The real impact that Rocky’s death has had on our family cannot be put into words. Until you have lost a child, parent, sibling, relative or friend to such violence you will never truly understand the immense suffering or devastating effect it has on your life.

“We have lost two years of our lives waiting for the trial to begin. Although Rocky’s death has bought us even closer together there is still a lot of tension, anger and sleepless nights in our homes as we wait for justice to be served. People talk about closure with this trial but for our family there will be no closure. We are living our worst nightmare and we will never wake up from it.”

Grateful mum names her baby after heroic tommies doctor

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A mum who suffered five miscarriages has named her baby daughter after the St Thomas’ doctor who made her birth possible.

Mum Martina named her baby girl Gail Shennan, after Professor Andrew Shennan who leads the specialist pre-term surveillance clinic at the hospital.

Professor Sherman diagnosed Martina with an incompetent cervix - where the neck of the womb weakens or opens too early in pregancy - and treated it with a pioneering procedure called the abdominal stitch.

It was a success and after five miscarriages including the devastating loss of two babies at nineteen and 23 weeks - Martina gave birth to her daughter at 35 weeks, during the first lockdown.

“After my first child turned three we decided to try for a baby. I got pregnant relatively quickly but I had a miscarriage at eight weeks. I put it down to bad luck so I wasn’t too worried,” she said.

“But not long after that I had another two miscarriages at nine weeks and then at 11 weeks.

“I thought something must be wrong, so I went to see my doctor and had some tests, but the results were all normal.”

Martina was able to get pregnant again - but tragically lost the baby at nineteen weeks.

“I was devastated, terrified, and confused,” she

said.

“I still didn’t know what was wrong and my internal examinations and tests were still showing that everything was fine.”

Martina got pregnant again, but once again suffered complications. Her baby was born alive, but was too little to be supported. “I was numb and in complete shock,” she said.

In April 2019, Martina and her husband referred themselves to Dr Shennan, who despite her complex medical history, managed to quickly identify a scar on her cervix.

Martina added: “It felt too good to be true.” The professor even travelled to Aberdeen, where the family live, to perform the surgery.

And after just a few months, the couple were able to have a baby daughter, Gail Shennan.

“I’m delighted and honoured to have Martina’s daughter named after me. I’m so glad we were able to support her to have a successful pregnancy,” the professor said.

Now he is teaching other doctors how to perform the life-changing procedure. He added: “I want to ensure that as many doctors as possible know how to do it to prevent families from suffering heart breaking losses.”

The aim, he said, was to raise awareness of the relatively unknown procedure.

The abdominal stitch is permanent, which means that women are unable to have a vaginal birth, and will need a caesarean section.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Old Kent Road’s regeneration has been ‘significantly changed’ to reflect a ‘green recovery from COVID-19', as a fresh consultation on the plans is set to begin in early 2021.

Southwark Council says revisions for the huge project were based on community feedback since the last major consultation in 2017, and take into account the council's refocused priorities from the pandemic.

As the News has extensively covered, key issues included the height of proposed tower blocks, loss of industrial space, and fears the scheme would raze what little heritage buildings are left in the area but have been hitherto without formal protection.

The scheme, which is expected to create 20,000 new homes, is also largely dependent on the Bakerloo line - and until last week was still in doubt.

Latest proposals show a current breakdown of ‘at least’ 5,000 new homes for social rent; leaving 7,000 ‘affordable’ and the remainder at market price.

The new plans detail 10,000 additional new jobs; two new tube stations; net zero carbon status by 2030; a new heat network; five new conservation areas; a youth facility; a new health centre; new parks and green spaces; and a new secondary and two new primary schools.

Cllr Johnson Situ, cabinet member for climate emergency, planning and transport, said: “We long knew we needed to be ambitious if we wanted to meet the need for more social and genuinely affordable housing in London, while also increasing employment opportunities and designing new neighbourhoods that deliver new open spaces, community facilities, improvements to air quality and a shift to sustainable travel like walking and cycling.

“In the wake of the pandemic, these priorities have crystallised further to form a vital part of our green recovery from COVID-19.

“I’m particularly proud that Southwark is leading the way as one of the first local authorities to make a firm commitment to deliver a carbon neutral Area Action Plan.

“The Old Kent Road Area Action Plan meets all these needs with a refreshed focus on connecting communities, effectively building two brand new town centres along the Old Kent Road under which the Bakerloo line extension will run.

“We are grateful to the thousands of local people who have spoken to us about the plans over the past three years, helping us understand their concerns and priorities.

“We looked at the demand for affordable homes and in consultation with the community, we’ve already approved nearly 8,000 new homes in the area with 38% being genuinely affordable. This is the highest average being delivered in the whole of London, putting us on track to surpass the action plan’s policy that at least 35 per cent of new homes will be affordable.

“This revised version of the plan has taken into account issues raised in earlier consultations, especially around creating a greener, healthier environment.

“The latest version includes a new cornerstone policy which means the development of Old Kent Road will be net carbon neutral by 2030, as well as plans for development in the area to be car free.

“We have also included a map and more information about how new developments will link to the district heat network, significantly reducing carbon emissions and lowering local residents’ energy bills.

“We recognise the importance of business and industry in the Old Kent Road, contributing to the local economy and unique industrial heritage of the area.

“This final draft of plans outlines how we will double the number of jobs from 10,000 in earlier drafts to 20,000 with many paying the London Living Wage, as well as proposing five new heritage conservation areas which identify and protect from development all listed and locally important buildings.

“We’ve also included a new policy that sets out how the Old Kent Road will evolve from a place to pass through to a destination boasting an innovative mix of commercial, residential and leisure uses at a scale not previously seen in London, integrating new with old.”

Work to restore Walworth Town Hall will begin within the next year after developers' plans were approved by Southwark Council’s planning committee last week.

The at risk building, gutted by fire in March 2013, has faced an uncertain future over the last seven years.

As the News reported in 2019, developer General Projects had won a pitch to regenerate the Grade II listed site of the Newington Library and Cuming Museum into a community space after the council said it was unable to solely stump up the cash.

The local authority had been spending £30,000 to maintain and monitor the boarded up town hall each month, including 24/7 security as stipulated by its insurers.

The council has been open about the financial impact of repairing the building - and its desire to secure private investment to do so. Tooley Street had projected full refurbishment costs to reach a prohibitive £36 million - although this is a figure disputed by some campaigners.

General Projects' proposals will see the ruin rebuilt and turned into flexible work spaces for small and medium sized businesses and start-ups, and provide events, art, performance and community meeting space.

The site will also connect with the neighbouring brand new venue for

the Southwark Heritage Centre and Walworth Library, which will contain some of the items from the Cuming Collection but broaden out the display into a borough-wide cultural history centre.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for jobs, culture and skills, said: “Our decision to approve plans for the Walworth Town Hall means we’re one step closer to bringing one of the borough’s most historic and recognisable civic buildings back into public use for current and future generations to enjoy.

“We recognised that maintaining public accessibility was among the local community’s top priorities and so these plans ensure a significant amount of the building, including the new café, can still be accessed by all.

“We’re delighted that creatives and start-ups from across the borough can look forward to the town hall’s new studio and work spaces with co-working memberships that will offer full access to services, including free Wifi, meeting rooms and business mentoring.

“We’re especially proud to offer a number of memberships at a reduced rate for Southwark residents, ensuring this new culture hub is genuinely affordable and accessible to the local community.”

The scheme was passed unanimously on Monday, December 7, by the council’s planning committee. Heritage campaigners from the Walworth Society, who have long lobbied the

council to ensure the building is protected and kept for community use, said they felt their campaign had won significant improvements in General Projects’ offering.

“We feel that the work that the society has put in over the past three months in relation to strengthening the guarantees that will now appear in the legal agreement and also work to improve the quality of the restoration of key rooms in the building has paid off,” a circular to its members said.

General Projects says the workspaces in its plans will bring over 370 jobs to the building. It has also committed to sourcing a local operator to run a ground-floor cafe.

Construction is expected to begin in the autumn of 2021 and be completed in 2023. General Projects has commissioned architects and interior designers Feix & Merlin to complete the ‘sensitive’ restoration.

“We are thrilled to have been provided with this wonderful opportunity,” said Frederic Schwass, General Projects’ development principal.

“The project has been centred around collaboration and we are extremely thankful for all the invaluable input that Southwark Council, Historic England, the community, and of course our team, have provided.

“We very much look forward to beginning the next chapter to bring back these iconic landmarks into use as a vibrant creative workspace, educational, and community hub.”

Mp slams council over the Beormund Centre

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Bermondsey’s MP has slammed the council’s decision to close the much-loved Beormund Community Centre.

The Beormund, on Abbey Street, has closed this month, after the council pulled its funding in the community centre and refused to renew the lease.

Council officials had argued it was poor value for money in a report, but the centre’s manager Coral Newell had hit back, saying it was forced to shut up shop because of Covid.

Now Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP, Neil Coyle, has slammed the decision, saying council officials had insulted the hard work of its centre manager.

“I have acquired the atrocious council report on this community asset which I have been using for over fifteen years,” he said.

“Coral Newell has been running the centre for 21 years and has been running events and support for local people for more than four decades.

“Her contribution to Southwark is immense and is one reason I found the erroneous report so distressing. Coral should be cherished, not insulted by the council.”

Officers at the town hall had recommended the closure, saying the

Beromund had not looked for outside funding and had not furloughed staff, raising concern about value for money.

But Mr Coyle rejected the assessment, saying the council’s own paperwork showed the centre had other sources of funding. He added the centre followed best practice by paying staff wages because it could without the furlough scheme.

“The council report was hurtful to Coral Newell and to all the many organisations and people who have used and benefited from the Beormund over the years and ignores the potential benefits or reopening post-Covid and with a longer lease,” he said.

Southwark Council has previously responded that it is sorry that the centre felt the decision was unfair.

But when contacted by the News twice to respond to Mr Coyle’s criticism, it did not reply. Defiant centre manager, Coral, has vowed to not hand back any money to the council after the report.

Now the centre is planning on donating its left-over funds to charity.

It believes the council has refused to renew the lease because it wants to develop the building for flats.

“Yes, the reason why they have not renewed our lease which should have been in 2018 is because they have wanted the site, this will obviously give Southwark a tidy few millions,” said Ms Newell.

Helping out this Christmas

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A team of Southwark organisations are feeding 1,000 vulnerable elderly people traditional pie ‘n’ mash this Christmas.

Bermondsey Pie and Mash Co, M. Manze’s pie shop on Tower Bridge Road, the CWU union, Millwall Community Trust, and this paper are all working together to feed the over-65 even giving them a festive mince pie to enjoy, too.

But your help is needed - as volunteers are desperately needed to pack and deliver the meals to Southwark residents on Christmas Eve. Steve Beadle and Barry Nelson, of the CWU union, approached Millwall Community Trust and Bermondsey Pie ‘n’ Mash about the idea after the success of Marcus Rashford’s campaign to give school children free meals during the school holidays.

Members of the union in south London, which represents communications workers, have donated towards the cost of giving out the free meals which will be cooked by Manze’s.

One of those taking part, Tammy Jukes, from Bermondsey Pie ‘n’ Mash,enlistd the help of the News in her role as Advertising Manager. She said: “We were happy to get involved because a lot of our customers are elderly and we would like to give something back to them this year, when needed most.”

Mark Bond, operations director at Manze’s, told the News the business felt the need to get involved because it is “part of the furniture” in Bermondsey.

“We are so happy to support this wonderful cause,” he said.

Postal workers from the CWU say they have seen first-hand the effects of an increase in poverty during the pandemic.

“This year has been especially difficult with Covid-19 lockdown which has left some of our elderly extremely lonely and

vulnerable,” said the union’s Mr Beadle.

“It is for these reasons the local postie and their union are very happy to be involved.”

Meanwhile, Millwall Community Trust told the News it was happy to join the drive, because normally staff would be volunteering to support Crisis UK. This year, that has not been able to go ahead.

Faith, hope and ‘confidence’ of slimmer Within three years Oxfordshire mum Faith Roots shed eight stone, dropping eight dress sizes.

police Appeal after men ‘lured to hotel to do fake nude game show’

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A man has told police he was lured to a hotel in south-east London under the promise of being in a game show - only to be made to do naked ‘challenges’ which were filmed.

Another victim has reported a similar ordeal, with the suspect keeping the footage, thought to be for his own gratification.

The first victim, aged 28, told police in 2018 that he had been approached by a 29-year-old man claiming to be in the entertainment industry asking him to take part in the fake ‘game show’ for a chance to win £5,000.

The victim was asked to go to a hotel in Newham to take part in several nude ‘challenges’ as part of the show, which were filmed.

A second victim, 31, reported that in August 2013, the suspect coerced him to go to a hotel in south east London

and take part in a similar fake game show.

Officers say a man, aged 29, who was arrested in 2019 on suspicion of voyeurism, was released but is under investigation.

They are appealing for anyone who may have been involved in a similar incident to come forward amid fears there may be more victims.

Sergeant James Mason, of the Met’s North East Basic Command Unit, said: “We believe there may be more victims

in relation to these events.

“I urge anyone who may be a victim of similar crimes or incidents from 2013 to the present day, to come forward with information.

“The reported incidents took place several years ago and it is important we are able to investigate these and support any further victims.”

jailed FOR firearm in kennington kitchen

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk An alleged gang member from Kennington was sentenced to seven years behind bars for firearm possession with intent to endanger life.

William Watson, from St Oswald’s Place, appeared at Woolwich Crown Court last Monday week (December 7).

On July 9, at around 9.15pm, officers conducting a search warrant at his home, which had been under surveillance, found a loaded firearm in the kitchen.

Watson was arrested the same night at 11.50pm after police stopped a car he was travelling in as a passenger.

The 25-year-old admitted owning the firearm on arrest.

Crime Command, said: “Being in possession of a loaded firearm as in this case is unacceptable and it is so important that we continue the fight against illegal firearms on our streets.

“If we had not recovered the weapon and ammunition, the result could have been an innocent member of public paying the ultimate price.

“We will continue to work hard to prevent violent crime to keep the streets of London safe.”

The launch of two amnesties

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Three-month weapon amnesties are running in London, in advance of the new Offensive Weapons Act 2019 coming into force next year.

The legislation will outlaw certain weapons that are currently legal to keep in the home.

There are two weapon surrender schemes; one from the Home Office which compensates individuals who give their details and are the legal owners, and one from the Met which people can take part in anonymously but without receiving cash in exchange.

Both run from this week until Tuesday, March 9, 2021.

The Home Office lists Zombie knives as worth £10, knuckleduster at £20, and gravity knives at £40. Only claims over £30 will be compensated.

Detective Chief Superintendent Lee Hill, who is leading the weapons surrender in the Met, said: “Our top priority remains tackling violent crime and we fully support this surrender which seeks to remove potentially dangerous and harmful knives and firearms - every weapon surrendered could mean the prevention of a violent incident, injury or death.

“Alongside this surrender, officers will be carrying out a range of tactics including weapon sweeps, patrols, and intelligenceled stop and search to target those who are still intent on carrying knives and firearms on the streets of London.

“I would urge Londoners to do the right thing and surrender any weapons they might have and remember that this is all aimed at reducing violence, safeguarding communities and keeping our city safe.”

To surrender knives or similar items to the Met - without having to give any personal details - simply hand them in to Brixton, Lewisham or Croydon police stations, which are open 24 hours a day. To surrender firearms call 101.

Thousands help to raise £40k for Sergeant Matt

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Met officer’s running challenge has raised over £40,000 for Sergeant Matt Ratana’s family.

Lewisham Custody Sergeant Paul Hollis organised a running event to raise funds for his late friend and colleague’s family.

Joining him in the challenge, those taking part could run the 10k in their own time between Friday, 20 November and Thursday, 10 December to raise money for the support fund.

Within weeks he had more than 2,000 people signing up from police forces across the country alongside firefighters, ambulance crews and running clubs.

Sergeant Hollis said: “I organised the 10k running series in honour of my colleague and friend Matt in order to raise money for his partner.

“I initially only expected around 100 people to sign up but I’ve been overwhelmed with the support from everyone.

helping with the massive logistical operation of posting the T-shirts and medals.

“I know that the event has gone global with people running in Matt’s honour in various parts of the world, even as far away as Pakistan. I’ve ended up running 10k every day without fail since 20 November and this wasn’t part of my original plan at all!”

He added: “I’ve managed to fit in a run every day, even around my night shifts, with one being 19 laps around Lewisham police station at 2 o’clock in the morning.

“Last Sunday, I was returning from my run near Tunbridge Wells when I saw three people running with the T-shirts I’ve been sending out.

“I pulled over to have a chat with them and was astonished to find out that all three of the runners were Kent police officers. That was just absolutely amazing to see.

“The last run from New Scotland Yard to Paddington Green was really significant, as that is where I used to work and live with Matt.”

Why it's a great idea: Lockdown restrictions are having a very big impact, especially on our older and vulnerable residents.

Charities and community organisations across the borough are very worried about the impact on health and wellbeing.

Even though things will not be the same this year, local groups, churches, charities and the council are all keen to ensure that our older and more vulnerable residents feel cared for and connected. Our brilliant local groups are making plans to reach and support people in different ways but we know the need is high and times are tough. So, we’re launching the Southwark Community Christmas appeal to help back these amazing efforts.

In order to support this appeal you will set up a once-off direct debit to United St Saviour’s Charity. The Direct Debit can only be taken once and will only be taken when the campaign target is reached.

For this appeal, the target must be reached for any of the pledges to be taken

If you can donate a small amount, you will contribute to a grants programme to support charities and local groups to deliver a range of activities in the Christmas period from Christmas lunches, hampers and gifts to visits and even Christmas carols. Depending on Covid restrictions, activities and support will be delivered to people in their homes, or at socially distanced events. If you cannot donate, do reach out to neighbours who might be feeling alone.

The generosity of residents, business – and tireless efforts of local charities – meant that thousands of local people were provided with food, support and other essentials throughout the first lockdown.

Former teacher wins tribunal case against bacon’s college

Firefighters rescued the animal from a terraced house in Bricklayers Street shortly after 8pm.

It has now been reunited with its owner and taken to the vet for a full check up after being given first aid at

the scene.

A woman had left the building before the brigade arrived. She was treated by paramedics and is not believed to have sustained any injuries.

Most of the first floor of the home was damaged by the fire, which broke out just before 8pm. The blaze was was under control an hour later.

The cause is now under investigation by London Fire Brigade and the Met.

King’s praised for safely evacuating 400 patients

Four hundred patients were evacuated from King’s College Hospital after a fire broke out in its dental institute last week, writes Katherine Johnston...

The blaze started on the Denmark Hill building’s first floor roof on Wednesday, December 9, leaving part of its felting destroyed.

Operators were called at 12.46pm, with 25 firefighters and four engines racing to the scene.

They had the blaze under control by 5.10pm. Fortunately the fire was prevented from spreading into the building.

London Fire Brigade staff praised the hospital’s staff for evacuating patients and staff so quickly, with no one reported as injured. Around 80 staff had also been evacuated.

Station Commander Brin Powell said: "The Institute's staff got the patients and their colleagues out of the building very quickly and they followed their procedures to do this, which kept everyone safe."

The cause of the blaze is now under investigation.

Discrimination and victimisation claims were brought by Mr Mitchell, a black teacher in his fifties, who had taught sociology and RE at the school throughout 2018.

A social sciences curriculum leader vacancy became available in May, but was advertised on the school’s website for just 24 hours.

Mr Mitchell was not made aware of the vacancy so that he could apply, it was found, while other school staff knew about the opportunity.

Bacon’s College instead recruited a white teacher from an external agency, despite having an under-representation of ethnic minority staff in senior leadership.

The school told the tribunal it had rushed through the recruitment because it needed the new department

head to be in place before September. It denied discrimination.

But the tribunal ruled: “Given the accepted lack of black people in leadership positions, the tribunal find that the difference in treatment was because of the claimant’s race.”

The discrimination claim was also upheld on grounds of sex and age.

At the time, all other members of the department had been white, female and younger than Mr Mitchell, the tribunal heard.

The teacher formally complained about the recruitment process to the school’s head the following month, Employment Judge Manley was told.

When the Bacon’s College teacher complained of his treatment, principal James Wilson suggested that he could resign, a judge heard.

The school’s boss told the tribunal the comment was intended to be “helpful”, which it accepted, and that there was no compulsion to accept the offer.

But the judgement criticised the school’s head, saying the “lack of any statement about wishing to retain the claimant left him feeling he was not wanted at the school.” This caused

him “victimisation” for raising the complaint, it ruled.

Internal investigations by school governors following the row accepted the concerns about the advertising of the position were “valid” but insisted there was no discrimination.

Other aspects of the teacher’s case, relating to discrimination because he was not able to apply for an RE teacher role at the same time, were not upheld by the tribunal.

The court also did not uphold a claim that he was treated less favourably during the grievance process because of his race, sex, or age, or in his meeting with the principal for those same reasons.

Mr Mitchell could now receive a compensation payout from United Learning, the trust which runs the SE16 school.

A remedy hearing has been set for January 26 next year.

The News contacted United Learning, but it refused to comment until after the January hearing.

The school, on Timber Pond Road, counts the late Jade Goody and boxer David Haye among its alumni.

Mark Goldsmith, 55, is wanted by the Met after breaching his licensing conditions, and in connection with burglaries in Peckham and in south west London.

Police say Goldsmith is one of twelve ‘high harm’ offenders the Met is issuing wanted appeals for throughout December. All are alleged to have a history of violent offences or are wanted in connection with violent crimes.

Superintendent Claire Smart, from the Met's Violent Crime Taskforce, said: “With Christmas less than two weeks away, we are increasing our efforts to arrest these individuals and apprehend them for their crimes.

"Since July, we have arrested more than 850 high harm offenders and that

A Bermondsey grandmother who received chemo during lockdown has shaved her hair off to raise money for Guy’s and St Thomas’.

“Positivity is how I have dealt with everything so I wanted to use the opportunity to raise money for charity – and there was no one better to fundraise for than the people treating me.”

Sharon added she has been overwhelmed by the support. “I wasn’t nervous about shaving off my hair because you can wear a wig, or a hat or a scarf,” she said.

“I was quite happy to have a bald head because I knew it would grow back, but I wanted to show other people that it can be a positive thing.”

Sharon is now in remission and will be celebrating Christmas with her family.

Dr David Wrench, a consultant haematologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said it was “lovely” to hear about Sharon’s fundraising after the successful treatment.

“I encourage anyone with symptoms suggestive of lymphoma – particularly persisting unexplained lumps, weight loss, tiredness, night sweats, fevers or itching – to ensure they are reviewed by their doctor.

“The earlier we pick up this cancer, the more patients will have as good an outcome as Sharon.”

The Met and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trusts’ workforce choirs have joined together to create a fundraising version of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust on this exciting Christmas project in a year where police and the NHS have had to work together like never before.

“One of the great things we’re usually able to do as a choir is to support and fundraise for many different charities throughout the year, and we hope our efforts this Christmas can help raise awareness of our two chosen charities, including COPS which supports members of the police families who have very sadly died in the line of duty.

“The song we selected has long been a Christmas favourite and seems even more poignant this year with lyrics that talk about ‘faithful friends’ and being together ‘if the fates allow.’

“Of course this festive period will be very different for all of us, but projects such as these keep the choir’s passion alive and deliver some much needed cheer to our colleagues, fellow Londoners and beyond.

Sharon Goddard, 55, was diagnosed with stage three NonHodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer which develops in the network of vessels and glands in the body.

The mum-of-three and grandmother-of-six, began to lose her hair as she received chemo - so decided to shave it all off to raise money for the hospitals’ charity.

“Getting a cancer diagnosis is tough at any time, but it was particularly daunting during the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said.

“In normal circumstances you would have family around but I had to keep a distance from everyone and I couldn’t cuddle my grandchildren.

“It was hard not having my husband, Paul, there with me at all the appointments, but he was on loudspeaker so I wouldn’t forget anything.”

Sharon started her treatment earlier this year, and originally set out to raise £100 for charity, but has actually raised nearly £4,000.

“I cried for about an hour the day my hair started to fall out because of the shock, but after that I was fine,” she said.

“My head started to really hurt

Shared across social media last Friday, (December 11) the track aims to spread some Christmas cheer and raise funds for two great causes.

Donations will be shared between Care of Police Survivors, which supports the families of officers who died in the line of duty, and World Child Cancer.

The choirs recorded the song virtually after a planned get together in November was cancelled due to the second wave of the virus.

Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said: “I am delighted to support the partnership between the Metropolitan Police Choir and the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir, two outstanding choirs.

A 24-year-old from Southwark was crowned disability charity Sense’s ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award for the support she has given to a sixteen-year-old with learning disabilities.

Maria Atanasoaei, a civil servant, has been buddied with Saihan through the charity for the last

eighteen months. In that time they have built a strong relationship through shared passions, including for politics and disability rights.

Maria has helped Saihan build his confidence, social skills and independent decision-making.

as watching movies together, going to museums and attending debates. They even attended history lectures about WW2, visited the British Museum and the Houses of Parliament.

During lockdown Maria continued her weekly support and met with Saihan over Zoom. They spend this time helping Saihan prepare for a job interview, learning how to use Microsoft Office and watching documentaries.

The charity said she was a ‘clear winner’ for the annual award, which has run for seventeen years.

Richard Kramer, Sense’s chief executive, said: “We are delighted to name Maria our Volunteer of the Year at the Sense Awards 2020.

“Maria is an incredibly dedicated volunteer and has had a huge impact on Saihan’s life ensuring he is learning new skills and can fulfil his potential.

“But even more importantly they have become friends and been there for each other during this difficult year which is amazing to see.”

Maria described the award as a ‘symbolic reminder’ of the power of volunteering.

“Knowing that you can spend your free time learning new things, doing new activities, whilst also making a difference to someone's life is extremely rewarding.

“Volunteering teaches you the value of small steps, of small gestures, and how much of a difference these can make in someone's life. For that reason alone, I would encourage everyone to consider volunteering for whatever cause it is that they might be passionate about."

Our handyperson service continued to do health and safety home visits for free jobs to ensure they remained safe at home and we learned how important digital inclusion was, providing smartphones to those who needed one.

“We also provided slippers to help reduced the risk of falls and made sure staff were up-to-date on their training to support clients with low self-esteem and suicidal thoughts.

“The biggest lesson was the importance of a simple phone call made to an older person. The majority of our feedback was older people feeling happy to be remembered and not abandoned. It was and still is an emotional journey for all of us. It’s thanks to the support of our community we’ve been successful thus far.”

The team was recognised by the Self Care Coronavirus Innovation Awards, run by the charity Self Care Forum, announced during the annual Self Care week from November 1622.

Age UK’s local team was celebrated for rapidly mobilising support during the first lockdown and beyond, helping 2,000 vulnerable people aged 68 and over.

Support included collecting prescriptions, food shopping, telephone befriending and circulating specially designed chair exercises and activity packs to keep people moving.

Statement on the closure of the Beormund Centre ...

Dear Readers, this advert is in response to Southwark Council’s minutes of the 13th November, 2020 – Cabinet Member for Communities and Equalities.

The Beormund was never asked to respond before they agreed and accepted the minutes. Where are the equal opportunities now?

We did have a Council grant of £49,749 - out of this we had to pay back to Southwark the rental for the centre which was £23,000 per year. The lease on the building guarantees to the Council that we had a full repairing lease – for those who don’t know what that means – we at the Beormund had to cover every aspect of the building both inside and outside.

One of the allegations against us was we did not go after any further grants etc. This again was not true - in previous years we have BBC Children in Need, Job Centre Plus, ESF funding, which went on for a number of years. BBC Children in Need and Job Centre Plus put us in the top provider Number One, ESF funding went even further. The powers that be from Brussels came to see us and were more than pleased at the way we had run our project and we were awarded a number one for both the 8 training programmes, plus all of our financial budgets and they acclaimed us for an excellent programme of work. Unfortunately the fund came to an end because Central Government stepped in and stated that we had to marry up our programmers with another district, mainly over the other side of London. We tried to do this but found it was impractical. We then thought we needed a way forward for our training floor and looked at the colleges, universities and other training projects, to allow them to come within the Centre.

In response to the Council’s comment, this allowed us to produce a number of training projects which helped people back to work with a degree.

It also allowed us a way forward to have more than sufficient money to host all of the projects for the elderly such as Aerobics, Card Class, Gym Lessons, Dancing and a Social Club, Annual Parties, Easter etc. Plus 2 coach outings to coastal resorts, Summer School for the younger children, plus Autism projects and one off localised events.

You mentioned the dwindling attendance. We are not sure what you mean - last year we had 28,000 through the building. Obviously this year because of Covid-19 the centre has been closed from the middle of March until September and after that still had to close because of the restrictions placed upon us.

Over the past 3 years we were awarded by the Greater London Zone for the best run Centre within Southwark.

Another allegation made in the minutes was that we never allowed any of our staff to go on furlough - WE paid all of our staff full pay. We have made them all redundant plus and paid them honorariums.

Most of the Policy implications are so untrue – and obviously if the current monitoring officer looked at what we had done perhaps they may have seen it differently. Triumphant recognised what we were doing to make sure that the Centre survived and prospered to enable us to provide a whole host of additional projects for both the elderly and young people. What we also had to remember was both the Salmon and Downside have their own Youth criteria.

The council continued to monitor the grant as part of the annual monitoring cycle under the Common Purpose programme. Monitoring information provided by the Beormund has been minimal and governance documents such as equal opportunities policies have not been reviewed for many years.

Every year we have a monitoring visit where we have given to the officer our Audit accounts, Annual General Meeting, Insurance, plus the recognised Policies needed, and The Equal opportunities for both Adults and Children. Yes there may have been some years where we only reviewed the policies and found that did not need to be renewed. In some other years there may have only had some sections needed to be dealt with, but yes to the officers the policies were there. By the way once again, in the past years our Policy Portfolio was taken around to other Centres as a way forward.

The whole reason why the Council minutes were written is because when I telephoned the officer in question he accused me of being obnoxious, to which I replied has he read his letter. By the way he was probably at home where most of our staff have been over the past 10 months.

Yes the reason why they have not renewed our lease which should have been in 2018 is because they have wanted the site, this will obviously give Southwark a tidy few millions. Within the minutes it clearly states that most of our user clients will need to go.

Message to users and supporters of the Beormund Centre ...

Over the years, seeing everyone coming into the Centre on a daily basis, we have made many friends and lots of happy memories.

One of these groups was the Bermondsey Pensioners Action Group – who invited Guest Speakers to come to their meetings. These included Councillors, Local Police and a variety of Information providers. Who in their turn explained the rights and changes in the Law etc. that would affect them. Every one of these sessions was well attended and a number of problems raised by the Pensioners were resolved.

As Chair and Treasurer I was pleased to see that the Centre continued our training programme, continuing to allow all of our students to leave the Centre with a degree and certificat . We had a wonderful staff who carried out their duties in a professional manner. Of course we are so sorry that we have had to close down.

Frank Gilman, Chair and Rosemary Whitlock, Secretary/Treasurer May I thank all of our people for supporting us through the years, most of all Harriet Harman, M.P. I will always remember the times, so many, when she came to the Centre to carry out our Student Awards and degrees and also came forward when I needed support for any difficulties we may have had. On one occasion she came with Gordon Brown and most of the Cabinet, who selected our Centre to carry out a day of understanding with users, and informed the public what was currently happening with the Global Finances and what had almost led to a financial crash. This session was down to Harriet.

On other occasions we had the Mayor to open our Fun Days etc. Through this the Mayor on one occasion was Vickie Naish - she came, liked what we were doing and carried on coming for a number of years.

There are so many memories I have that I will always remember each and every one of you especially all of our Elderly, their holidays, the wonderful outings we all had. But most of all those folk who came on Christmas Day, at the Robens Suite, many of whom did not come out only on this special day of the year. Myself and my family ran this for event for 41 years. To my staff who helped before the event and on the day itself, may I say thank you to them, together with Frank and Rosemary, who were always there on Christmas Day. Southwark should not have taken this decision - when you have a good and recognised Centre that allowed all what is needed to come together to share their problems and their joys.

Comment We still have a long way to go

T

his has been, by any measure, an extraordinarily difficult year.

My thoughts are with everyone who is facing this Christmas grieving the loss of a loved one, whose job or income has been impacted by the fallout from the pandemic, who has experienced the debilitating health impacts of coronavirus, or has been impacted by loneliness and isolation during the lockdown.

In difficult times we have also seen the best of humanity in so many ways.

We can celebrate our frontline workers in the NHS, social care, emergency services, in our schools and councils, retail and other public services who have gone above and beyond the call of duty, often putting themselves at risk to continue their important work.

We can be proud of the thousands of residents across Southwark and Lambeth who got involved in mutual aid groups, looking out for their neighbours and making sure no-one

MP for Dulwich & West Norwood went without everyday essentials, and the many shops, cafes and restaurants which stepped in alongside our councils, food banks and local groups to provide free food for children in need over the October half term, when the Tory government refused to help.

We still have a long way to go, the virus is still claiming hundreds of lives every day and the announcement this week that London is being placed under Tier 3 restrictions is a devastating further blow to everyone who works in hospitality and the performing arts in particular. But there are signs of hope at the end of this difficult year. The scientists who have worked relentlessly to develop safe, effective vaccines so quickly also deserve our gratitude, as last week the first vulnerable elderly residents in Southwark and Lambeth received the protection of vaccination.

Moving forward to the New Year, and the hope that life will begin to return to normal, we must make sure that we don’t

allow things to return to business as usual.

Coronavirus has shone a light on some deep inequalities in our communities, from the appalling impacts of the disease on our elderly, vulnerable and Black, Asian and minority ethnic residents, to the terrible funding crisis in social care, the scandal of holiday hunger amongst children and many other issues.

The Tories have failed to deliver a detailed action plan for addressing the health inequalities of coronavirus, they have continued with their devastating cuts to our local councils and they voted against giving free school meals to children over the October half term.

In 2021, we owe it to all those who have lost their lives to this terrible disease to hang on to the best of what we have been during this difficult year.

Along with my Labour colleagues, I will work tirelessly to demand better of this Tory government too.

ith just a week to go until Christmas, this is usually the time of year for office parties and planning visits to friends and family.

Sadly this has been anything but a normal year and will need to be a very different Christmas too. The coronavirus that has defined 2020 is now spreading very rapidly across London again. In the last few days we have seen the biggest increase in cases in Southwark since April, with rates increasing across all age groups. As a result London is now in tier 3. It’s vital that we all play our part again in getting rates back down, so we can save lives and end the need for these tough new restrictions.

Given the current rapid rise in infections, I encourage you to think very carefully about the best way to keep your family safe this Christmas. We must all follow the current rules, but I also urge you to consider whether meeting with other households over Christmas is a safe thing for you and your family and friends to do, even if the ‘Christmas bubble’ rules allow it. I know that it is incredibly difficult and many people will be deeply missing time with family and friends, but we must be careful. I’ve made the difficult decision not to meet my parents this Christmas, you may want to play safe and do the same.

Whilst the current infection rate is very worrying, it has been wonderful to have good news on vaccinations. The approval of the first vaccine as safe by the UK regulator is an amazing breakthrough.

I’m delighted to say vaccinations have now started for Southwark residents

at our hospitals and in the community too. At this point the number of doses is very limited so people who are eligible are being contacted direct by the NHS. However we are expecting many more to arrive in the new year, bringing an end to tiers and lockdowns in sight.

As we draw to the end of this most difficult of years, I’d like to say a huge thank you for everything that you and everyone else in Southwark have done to support our community through 2020. Southwark’s response to COVID has been an amazing joint effort by residents, public services, community groups and businesses. Together we have achieved great things in the face of an unprecedented challenge.

Our Community Support Alliance has been a really effective partnership between the council, charities and community groups, thousands of volunteers, the local NHS and GP surgeries. The Alliance has delivered thousands of food packages and made contacts with tens of thousands of vulnerable residents during the pandemic.

This week we agreed a further £200,000 of funding from the council for this work.

million supporting our residents through the Southwark Emergency Support Scheme and Community Hub this year.

At the beginning of the pandemic, the ‘Everyone In’ approach to get everyone sleeping rough off the streets, resulted in the council re-housing 799 rough sleepers, most of whom have now moved on to long-term accommodation.

Businesses in Southwark have been hit hard by the pandemic, and the council has distributed over £65 million in grants to local businesses, as well as setting up a £2 million business hardship fund. We’ve also been supporting businesses to be COVID safe, offering support, advice and materials to help businesses comply with the national rules, carrying out nearly 5,000 spot checks to businesses since March.

Finally I’d like to encourage you to give to our Southwark Christmas fundraising appeal if you can. We’re working with local charities to bring support and cheer to elderly and vulnerable people in Southwark. Your donations will help make sure those residents feel cared for and connected over Christmas. Further to your interesting report on the drawbacks of shared ownership, here's another. Unlike full owners, shared owners have no legal right to extend their lease, something that is advisable when it drops below 80 years. They can only do so at the discretion of the freeholder and on their terms. In my case the housing association Optivo insisted that I pay the whole of the premium, even though I own only 50 per cent of the equity; which I did in the end, under protest.

That is something else that needs reforming.

Will the Old Kent Old regeneration work?

O

ld Kent Road is one of the last frontiers of regeneration - or gentrification, depending on your view - in London. It’s certainly the only plot left in Southwark with the potential to build thousands of homes; 20,000, to be exact.

Southwark’s Labour run council has not often held its hands up and said it has got redevelopment wrong.

A proliferation of luxury flats, a skewed housing market geared toward high earning City professionals, and continuing loss of social housing is more often than not attributed to the pains of austerity and strained budgets, policies beyond its control - like right to buy - and the actions of the Conservative-Lib Dem coalition in years past.

But there has been a marked shift in how the local authority talks about housing in the last two years especially, and its relationships with developers.

In January of this year we reported on a new ‘social regeneration charter’ for Old Kent Road, a series of commitments to ensure redevelopment brings opportunities for the people it is meant to help in the first place.

Tellingly, the council pledged to “work differently and better with developers”.

The council is also taking a firmer line on ensuring the 35 per cent affordability criteria for new housing developments is met. By setting up its own construction firm and returning repairs services in-house, it is is also rolling back outsourcing and privatisation.

In the five years since the council first launched consultations on Old Kent Road’s regeneration, there have been a series of legal challenges to regeneration projects including Delancey’s Elephant and Castle, Camberwell Union, and Aylesbury to name a few.

Strong opposition to the initial Old Kent Road plans came from all directions - businesses aghast at a focus on ‘shared working space’ with little focus on industry and manufacturing, residents worried about high-rise blocks and overcrowding, and loss of heritage assets.

The latest iterations are said to show ‘significant changes’ - all in response to a series of well coordinated campaigns.

Whether these revisions go far enough, and how legally binding they are, will become clearer when the public consultation begins next month.

What is clear is that the people who have fought for a better kind of regeneration now have more influence than ever at Tooley Street.

The 80-year-old is known for his role in ‘Travels with my father’, where he and Jack travel the world together.

Michael praised the work of ‘wonderful’ staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’ - but couldn’t resist the chance to have a dig at his son.

According to the website, IanVisits, contractors are to hang a bale of straw from Wandsworth Bridge as repair works are conducted.

The obscure bylaw states that any bridge over the Thames open to river traffic must hang the straw from the bridge as a warning to boats.

The unusual tradition is thought to have its origins at London Bridge when straw was imported into the capital by boat.

If a skipper could see straw on the underside of the bridge, it meant the tide was too high it has been suggested - meaning it was knocked off a previous straw-carrying boat which tried to pass through.

But what you may not know is that Santa may have been ‘trained’ here in Southwark.

Last year, Southwark Cathedral hosted ‘Santa School’ - the largest professional training course for Father Christmasses in the UK. The santas were given a 101 in the history, characterisation and 'wardrobe' of Santa to make sure he is as lifelike as possible.

It means any Santa you see may have just learned his trade in SE1.

But for any children reading, any Santa you meet will definitely be the real one - as these Santas are just to help out the real Santa when he can’t be in two places at once.

Like the gift that keeps giving, Eagle Theatre delivers a festive surprise with this adult Pantomime, ‘Frostbite, Who Pinched My Muff?’, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor.

That is a until the government on Monday announced London was going into Tier 3, so when they can re-open this is worth making a note of in your diary.

Written by Gareth Joyner and directed

by Robert McWhir, this production makes merry by the bucketload, and key to its success is the genuine joy radiating from the cast members as they play characters with the saucy bawdiness necessary for a jolly good let-your-hair-down occasion.

And why not? This hilarious gem is like stumbling on water in a dessert.

At the heart of this wintery caper, is an alpine-themed setting where delightful, silver Fairy Snowflake(Kingsley Morton), enchantingly sets the scene, warning of her dastardly brother Demon Frostbite(Nathan Taylor), superbly strutting, snarling and plotting his darkhearted deeds.

Pursued by the scheming Demon Frostbite, Dereck Walker delivers a hilarious performance as the iconic panto Dame Herda Gerda, with her tongue-incheek innuendos literally freezing the snowy air. Larger than life Dame Herda encourages audience participation, declaring: ‘Aww, me hands are nippy’, and in true panto style we scream back ‘Shove ‘em in your muff’!’ Alongside some sweary songs, adults are guaranteed a guilt-free night’s entertainment.

With the polar icecap melting, audiences must ensure the survival of Lumiukko(James Lowrie), literally ‘snow’ camping it up with his singing, dancing and all-round cheeky fun as he gets us to sing ‘Hot Hot Hot’, after all, we love snow and must protect him from a melting death.

Jesus and The Hulk still on at the shopping centre That’s ‘The Class of 2020’, the open art exhibition, not the worst year in just about anyone’s life, writes Michael Holland...

Ian Moore, manager of Surrey Quays Shopping Centre eloquently performed the ribbon-cutting and announced to the eager horde that Class was open in more ways than one. Then, with sanitiser rubbed in the art-lovers filed through to be greeted by curator Rod Kitson, several of the contributing artists, and The Incredible Hulk, created by young Jesus.

Before long, numerous ‘Sold’ stickers were being stuck on artworks at a rapid pace and the general hubbub was one of joy and excitement.

The whole exhibition can be viewed online along with the artists discussing their artworks. But the exhibition will

staying open it is also a shop. They are stepping up Covid precautions by taking people’s temperatures before they enter, limiting numbers and have a one-way system in place.

A life through letters I found it hard not to get past the need to write in capital letters “I WENT TO THE THEATRE” and leave it at that, writes Katie Kelly...

by her, though this doesn’t stop her from having the lion’s share of the laughs whilst Andrew becomes increasingly respectable.

Beautiful, subtle acting from two absolute legends of stage and screen.

Endings to a story that had no beginning Vanessa Baird’s work is story telling of a kind that is both potently provocative and emphatically individual.

It was genuinely extraordinary to be doing something so normal and joyful.

If you’re wondering what coronavirus restrictions feel like in the theatre, the answer is, less strange than you might think. In fact, the half empty theatre felt almost more atmospheric and intimate. I don’t know whether I was more aware of people’s responses or they felt freer to express them but there were moments of gasping and laughter and no loss of energy at all.

This play is particularly suited to the year of virtual relationships, based as it is on a lifelong friendship conducted mostly by letter. Writer A. R. Gurney intended it as a novel but was turned down by a publisher as they didn’t ‘do plays’, and since 1988 has found a very successful home in the theatre.

Love Letters asks so many timely questions about the gains and losses that result from a lack of physical and incidental presence. The unplanned

and uncensored, versus the authored and edited.

The two characters, Melissa Gardner and strikingly named, Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, fall on opposite sides of this comparison, one desiring spontaneity and abandon whilst the other is more comfortable with the curated and the cautious. Jenny Seagrove and Martin Shaw do an extraordinary job of narrating a friendship that begins in infancy and lasts until midlife. You might ask what is gained from staging a novel which consists entirely of letters? The answer, ironically, is the physicality of the performance. With the simplest of sets, two desks, no other props, no costume changes, the focus is simply and relentlessly on the interaction of two people and their story; and it is enough to keep you completely gripped.

The friendship starts gentle and comic, with an exchange of formal and fun letters resulting from a birthday party invitation. As the years go on, the darkness of Melissa’s family life becomes clearer and is sadly rerun

It is planned to open on January 8 depending on which tier London is in at that stage. Her charged creations, made in pastel and watercolour, range from roomsize murals to intimate self-portraits and draw on a wide range of references from her own lived experiences, as well as from Scandinavian folklore and literature.

This exhibition, the artist’s first solo survey in the UK, introduces Baird’s world through a selection of her extraordinary drawings, made over the last six years, and includes an immense wall-size seascape created for the show.

A key series of works, entitled There’s no place like home, 2019-20, is centred on the Oslo house that she grew up in and still inhabits with her three teenage children and elderly mother, for whom she acts as carer.

Through vivid images of herself and her family, Baird captures the states of exhaustion, boredom and frustration that accompany the everyday tasks of looking after a household, conjuring up the chaotic detritus of domestic life in a kaleidoscope of provocatively raw imagery: her everpresent mother is seen lying ghost-like in bed; half-dressed teenagers, attached to their mobiles, slump at the table.

The artist portrays herself with honest vulnerability, as both a mother, daughter and carer, explicitly describing the taboo

subjects of intimate bodily functions and the ageing female body. Her work is underpinned by a dark sense of humour, with scenes made more menacing by Baird’s use of pictorial foreshortening and angled perspectives; her figures are compressed into claustrophobic spaces that draw the viewer unavoidably into nightmarish psychodramas.

A prolific artist, Baird often makes work on a scale that is physically demanding.

Central to this exhibition is a mammoth drawing, A little red coat, a pair of beautiful blue trousers and a green umbrella lost at sea, 2020, twelve paper scrolls that wrap the gallery walls, stretching four meters in height and more than 14 meters across.

Made for this exhibition, it evokes Japanese ink scrolls of mountains and seascapes; her gestural handling of watercolour and fluidly drawn line owes something to Hokusai, an artist she admires.

Whilst Baird’s work is rooted in the autobiographical, here her scope widens: disturbing scenes of figures drowning in the waves might be informed by Norwegian folklore, pervaded by legends of the sea, as well as referencing international political issues such as the European refugee crisis. Equally, the sea might represent personal psychological tumult, a feeling of being swept away or overwhelmed. Baird has never shied away from tackling difficult and controversial subjects in her work and these ambiguous images can be read as being both candid and confrontational.

Also included in the exhibition is Red Herring Prednisolon ciclosporin, 201418, a series of intimate self-portraits in watercolour, made over a period of four years whilst the artist was being treated for a chronic illness. These works beautifully communicate the extreme physical and emotional effects the medication had on her: her bloated face and bleary eyes, expressing anguish and pain, stare out at us from her fiercely red and raw face, whilst in another portrait, bleached of colour, her features ebb away into a kind of miasma. Every title records the different medication and precise dosage that caused these unpleasant side effects, giving this powerfully unsettling series a scientific air.

Baird’s highly personal responses to themes around the female body – from motherhood, to illness, to ageing – continues a curatorial focus on the body and bodily experience threaded throughout Drawing Room’s programme for 2020–21; she handles these themes in a uniquely unforgettable and searingly provocative manner, which we are thrilled to be sharing with a UK audience for the first time.

A forgotten hero of a forgotten war

The Incredible bravery of a Camberwell soldier in Korea fifty years ago AFTER A series of military cock ups which could have formed the basis of a grim Blackadder script, British troops were left like sitting ducks on an exposed hill in Korea in September 1950, showered by enemy shelling with little hope of getting out alive.

A brave Sergeant Major from Camberwell was the saviour of his battalion, but as with so many similar startling acts of courage from the Korean War, it is little more than a historical footnote in our nation’s military past.

Thomas James Richard Collett was born in Camberwell on December 3, 1919, and after being schooled locally, he enlisted in September 1935 and was posted to 1st Battalion of the The Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (A&SH).

By the time the regiment was shipped out to defend South Korea from its Northern counterpart in 1950, Collett was the Regimental Sergeant Major.

Collett and the A&SH arrived in South Korea at the end of August 1950. Their objective was to cross the Nakdong River near Taegu and capture the town of Sonju eight miles beyond. But standing in their way was ‘Point 282’, a hilltop used by the North Koreans to fire at allied troops crossing the river.

At dawn on September 23, two companies of the Argylls attacked and took the hill in a swift victory which proved too good to be true.

There was little time to celebrate their conquest as they realised ‘Point 282’ was overlooked by the larger ‘Point 388’, which was still in enemy hands.

The two companies of Argylls were stranded out on the open hilltop, so they dug in as quickly as they could and hid in their foxholes, awaiting the inevitable counter-attack.

The bodies piled up as waves of shells and mortars devastated their position and an American artillery officer the Argylls were counting on to break up the attack was inexplicably ordered to withdraw. Despite protests against this retreat all the way up to the General, the officer was ordered back to his HQ and the Argylls were told to hold their position to the last man and the last round.

The wounded lay out in the open on the 900 ft hill and the most important task was to somehow get them to safety.

Collett took charge of the evacuation, which meant he was constantly out in the open under heavy enemy fire.

The North Koreans were inching closer and closer and the Argylls were rapidly losing men – some killed, some injured and others enlisted as impromptu stretcher-bearers.

According to Collett’s obituary in the Telegraph after he passed away in October 2014 at the age of 94, when an infantryman reported that his weapon was out of action, Collett handed the man his rifle and continued unarmed.

Just when it seemed the situation could not get much worse, the whole hilltop was set ablaze as an American air strike accidentally napalmed the

wrong side.

In the face of overwhelming opposition from North Korea and a bombing from his own side, under Collett’s leadership the remaining Argylls managed to retake the lost ground and undertake a fighting withdrawal.

When it was possible to make a check the next day it was found that the casualty list amounted to seventeen killed or missing and 76 wounded - among them were all the platoon commanders and platoon sergeants.

The American Airforce issued an apology for the accidental attack on the hill and gave a “generous cheque” for the families of those killed and wounded, according to ‘The Argylls in Korea’ by Lt-Colonel G I Malcolm.

Colonel of the Regiment, Lt-General Sir Gordon Macmillan, wrote later: “I can assure you that we all understand too well how liable are such mistakes as that of 23rd September 1950 to occur, under the stress and hazards of war.

“Every report I have received from the Battalion, both before and after the incident of 23rd September, has spoken in glowing terms of the wonderful co-operation afforded to them by the United States Air Force and no hard feelings have arisen as the result of this accident.”

Collett was among the last to leave the position and his extraordinary courage was recognised by the award of a Military Medal.

After returning home from Korea, Collett remained in the forces until he retired from the Army in 1962. He spent 23 years as a publican in Bury St. Edmunds before passing away in 2014 leaving behind the only son he had with wife Eva Iley.

The general effect of the cycle tracks order, in conjunction with the powers conferred by section 65(1) of the Highways Act 1980, is to:(a) formalise and make permanent two-way segregated cycle tracks for use of pedal cycles only in (i) ONTARIO STREET north-east of its junction with London Road and (ii) PRINCESS STREET southwest of its junction with London Road; and (b) formalises and makes permanent a shared-use area for pedal cycles and pedestrians only comprising of part of the footpath linking LONDON ROAD and ONTARIO STREET. 4. By Simeon Wright at Champion Hill sport@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET striker Danny Mills said it was “surreal” having fans back at Champion Hill - but clubs across the capital have again been hit by a devastating blow as gates shut with Tier 3 restrictions.

Last season’s leading scorer Mills, 29, struck the first of the Hamlet’s goals in last week’s 2-1 win against Eastbourne Borough, which extended their winning run to three games after they hadn’t won any of their opening seven in the league. Unfortunately, they couldn’t sustain that momentum as they lost 1-0 at Oxford City at the weekend.

Mills was delighted to see a crowd of 1,078 in East Dulwich the previous

week. However, those fans will now be denied seeing their team live again for the foreseeable future.

There was poignancy in Mills’ words as he spoke before this week’s announcement by the government that London would be placed into the highest tiers of restrictions. He said: “It was a special feeling, and a bit surreal really.

It’s been a long, long time, and these fans are brilliant. Some of the best that I’ve played in front of, so it was great to be back in front of them.

“I didn’t see it happening until next season at the earliest, and even then thought maybe there might only be 300 or 400 people there, so the fact that we’ve had it this side of Christmas and we’ve allowed the amount of fans that we have done is extra special.

Supporters were back at Champion Hill for the first time since last March

“We’ve just got to appreciate it now.

Every game is a bonus, and now to have the fans back is outstanding. Brilliant.”

It was the men’s team’s first fixture with spectators at Champion Hill since a 2-1 victory over Hemel Hempstead last March 14.

Dulwich supporter William Radford was among the lucky crowd welcomed back last Tuesday, and felt that an element of normality had returned to his life.

Radford, 22, said: “I’ve spent a few years living in Peckham while studying and came down to Dulwich most weekends for some fantastic action.

“It was great to see us win, but if the goalkeepers were swapped around it probably would’ve been different.

Mills echoed that fan’s thoughts on the match, adding that their opponents were unfortunate to be heading back to the south coast empty-handed.

He said: “If we’re being very honest, I don’t think we were good enough. We didn’t perform as well as we have done in previous games. We know we can do better, but it’s good that we can have these conversations after winning the game rather than just after defeats.

“Eastbourne will find themselves unlucky not to come away with anything, but at the same time it’s three points, it’s three wins on the bounce, and if you’d have given us that a few weeks ago we would’ve bitten your hand off for it.

“We set high standards, in training and when we go out to perform on the

pitch. So we went in there [the dressing room] after the game and just said that we need to be better.”

Another Hamlet supporter, Jonny Church, 22, added: “It was amazing, I thought it was good to have fans back in the ground, I think that’s the most important thing. I would also say our keeper kept us in it, but second half we saw it out. A Mourinho display, if you will.”

Dulwich Hamlet were in action at Champion Hill this week in the FA Trophy against Cheshunt, just a day before London was set to be put into Tier 3.

Their next home game in National League South is on Boxing Day against Welling United, but supporters will be denied that traditional festive day out.

Lionesses boss reacts to latest lockdown

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL LIONESSES boss Katie Whitmore insisted her side will continue to play for the fans – despite supporters not being able to attend games due to London’s new Tier 3 restrictions.

Sport deemed ‘non-elite’ has had fans back this season and the Lionesses enjoyed plenty of support in ERWFL Division One South, but that now changes as clubs deal with the new government orders.

“It’s obviously disappointing to go back to playing our games behind closed doors, but I know ultimately the squad

want to continue playing and still put on a performance that the fans would want us to put on – regardless of whether they are able to attend or not,” Whitmore told the News this week.

“Yes, it’s been great having the spectators back in the ground and to be able to give us that bit of encouragement when we need it in those tight games, but ultimately, you have to follow the current government guidelines and we hope to be able to welcome our fans back once we are out of Tier 3.”

Whitmore assessed the campaign so far, and the “hurdles” her team has faced in her first season as boss. The Lionesses are second in the table behind Hutton.

of the season for us, which we kind of knew was always going to happen - with me being new in the post as manager, having a new squad of the retained players and the new signings who were introduced at the beginning of the season,” she said.

“It’s been an up and down season anyway with the stop-start nature of it because of the lockdowns, so we are facing hurdles that we maybe would not have faced before. But we ultimately have been working on obviously making sure that everyone’s got the same vision as what management have got and making sure we go in with the same motivation.

“For me, what we need to work on is

what I’ve said in previous interviews, the girls have got to understand it’s not just about the physical aspect of the game, it’s the psychological aspects of the game as well. That’s a lot of the things we are going to be working on so we can make sure we hit the ground running for the second half of the season.

“The positives we can take is that we have gone in and put in good performances a majority of the time. I know the girls haven’t played to their full potential in some matches and in some matches I have come away disappointed with how the girls have played, but the squad in general seem to recover, respond and react to the messages I’m giving out after we lose a game.

“Ultimately, there are positives we can take out of the campaign so far – we are sitting in a good position, the league isn’t over yet, we can still turn it around from the losses we’ve had.

“For me, working with the squad and the committee, we’re facing hurdles we’ve never had to face before: having to do Zoom calls when we’re in a lockdown to make sure we are keeping that togetherness and keeping that motivation going.

“To be able to come out of this [lockdown] and be successful with either a promotion or the girls developing from where they started, which is what we wanted from the start, that’s going to be a successful season regardless.”

The Lions boss called his side’s firsthalf performance “abject” as they slumped to their lowest league position since he took charge fourteen months ago.

It has quickly gone downhill for Millwall. They have tumbled into the bottom half after having gone fourth in

Rowett said it was a “crazy” period as his side conceded more than one goal

in a game for just the fourth time in eighteen league fixtures this season.

It was hard to find any positives, besides maybe another bright display off the bench from Tyler Burey.

Millwall were so uncharacteristically ragged in defence. Duncan Watmore gave Neil Warnock’s side the lead in the

thirteenth minute. Two minutes later, Marcus Tavernier made it 2-0 with a wicked finish that gave Bart Bialkowski no chance.

The Lions were in a daze when Saville’s shot found the feet of Watmore who tucked home his second.

It was all too depressing on a weekend when rumours surfaced about London entering the highest tier of restrictions, something that was confirmed this week meaning no Lions fans at The Den this Saturday. Millwall’s players could have done with that energy from fans as they aim for just a second home league win of the season.

This was the first time in more than seven years they had gone ten league games without a win.

“Seven crazy minutes of defending have turned the game into one that was almost impossible to try and win,” Rowett said.

“The first-half performance was

pretty abject. It wasn’t good enough or a performance which belied this team.

“Maybe we turned up not understanding what we need to do. To concede the three goals we did was very unlike us and we can’t give in that easily.

“It is clear to see the team have lost a bit of confidence but you can’t feel sorry for yourselves.”

Millwall’s last away game of a 2020 most will want to forget is a daunting one as they travel to promotion-chasers Bournemouth.

Goals from Tom Bradshaw and Mason Bennett saw Gary Rowett’s side take three points from a game for the first time since October 28, when they beat Preston 2-0 at Deepdale.

The Lions had to respond after their worst showing of the season in their 3-0 defeat against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium last Saturday, after which Rowett was critical of his players.

And respond they did, with arguably their best display this campaign to take their second consecutive three points away from Ashton Gate and extend their unbeaten run there to five matches.

There was an intensity about Millwall that hadn’t been seen in recent games, with their forwards leading the press high up the pitch from minute one to put the hosts under pressure - forcing them to pass backwards or play long

balls that were easily dealt with by Shaun Hutchinson and Jake Cooper.

Rowett admitted it was very much “back to basics” for his side, which gave them more attacking impetus as they found opportunities to counterattack easier to come by after winning possession higher up the field.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson has been questioned since his move from Reading, but he has begun to show in recent weeks that he may still have a

future at Millwall.

He has led the line well in a number of matches, scoring his first goal of the season against QPR and holding the ball up well in other games. He put in the hard work to lead Millwall’s press brilliantly on Tuesday night.

It was a night that also continued a recent change in fortunes for Bradshaw, who too looked lively off the bench against QPR and impressed again at Ashton Gate. He scored his

second league goal of the season by deflecting a low Ryan Leonard effort into the corner.

There have been plenty of calls for Matt Smith to start recently, but Millwall arguably lose attacking intensity when he plays.

Malone has put in some good performances since returning to Millwall, but he has occasionally been sloppy in possession and been beaten defensively.

Wallace is more consistent and dependable, and has done his job well every time he has started this season.

GARY ROWETT felt his side put in a "true Millwall performance" in their defeat of Bristol City on Tuesday night.

The Lions didn't play like a side under pressure after no wins in ten games and deservedly took three points away from Ashton Gate through goals from Tom Bradshaw and Mason Bennett.

Rowett switched from a five-man defence to four at the back with the extra attacker helping to press the Robins higher up the pitch and try to take advantage of gaining possession deep in the opponents' half.

It worked a treat and Rowett was also pleased his side had that clinical

useful option in the 5-2-3 system, though it remains to be seen when Rowett will use that set-up again having ditched it on Tuesday night in favour of having an extra attacker on the pitch.

The shift back to 4-4-2 was a simple change, but one that was so effective as Millwall got back to what they’re very good at - putting teams under pressure and getting in their faces.

It was a performance that fully merited all three points and, in truth, Dean Holden’s side were lucky to have only lost by two goals with Bennett, Smith and Jed Wallace missing chances to make it an even more comfortable win.

The Lions now have to follow up this impressive display on Saturday against Nottingham Forest as they look for their second home win of the season. edge to go with their endeavour.

"I felt we really needed to take the game to the opposition and get on the front foot," Rowett said. "By winning a few early tackles, getting a few early interceptions, it allowed us to carry the ball higher up the pitch and that gave us confidence.

"I'm learning what it is to be a Millwall manager and sometimes I want us to jump forward three or four steps to be a team that can play in really flexible ways.

"I felt what we got was a really true Millwall performance. We scrapped and we fought, but then we played with good quality which was important. We had good quality off the second balls and that little bit of composure.

"I went in afterwards and I was going to congratulate them on their hard work and effort but I didn't because that should be a standard for us every week. That was something that came across in abundance."

Bristol, but he was picked out for praise

by Rowett after the game. The Iceland international led the line superbly and, again, his team-mates know how important he is to the side.He has never been a prolific goal-scorer but when a team down on their luck need to go more direct and press opponents back then Bodvarsson has that ethic in spades. Rowett went back to a more traditional 4-4-2 on Tuesday and with Bodvarsson and Bradshaw defending from the front they didn't need that extra player at the back.

Rowett said the win was a "massive relief, and over in Nottingham at the same time on Tuesday Hughton was expressing a similar feeling.

Forest won for the first time in eight games as they defeated bottom side Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 to go three points above Derby in the last relegation place. It was only Forest's fourth league win this season.

"It's a big relief," Hughton said. "It's been tough, I must admit, and it's been tough on the players as well.

"With regard to endeavour and effort in certain games I can't fault them for that.

"I think we've just struggled at both ends and put ourselves under pressure. Getting the first goal early tonight certainly settled us and I think we played a really good game."

Forest have won only once away from home this season - 1-0 at Blackburn back in mid-October - while the Lions have won just once at home. Both sides will be desperate to improve those records.

option their only option for large chunks of the game.

As was the case against Derby, that isn’t always going to be effective with Curtis Davies and Matt Clarke dominating aerially that Saturday afternoon in SE16.

Millwall have options in forward areas and will hope that an upturn in fortunes for Bodvarsson and Bradshaw will also spur on Tottenham loanee Troy Parrott, who was an unused substitute in Bristol.

The Irish international has shown glimpses of quality and is clearly a talented player, but he all too often drops deep in a Millwall system where they tend not to commit huge numbers forward, further lowering the options in the box for wingers and full-backs to aim for with their crosses.

Another loanee who didn’t start in Bristol was Ryan Woods. So often impressive on the ball since signing, Woods appeared to drop off in recent weeks, though the options for him to dictate the tempo and spray his usual array of passes were limited during the Lions’ poor run.

That meant a start for Shaun Williams to partner Leonard, with the Irishman performing well winning the ball back and providing important protection in front of the back four.

At 34, Williams has the most appearances for Millwall in Rowett’s squad. It’s crucial in a difficult spell to have players who know what it means to play and give their all for the Lions in a back-to-basics performance.

Williams and Leonard were willing runners and broke up the play well throughout the game, with the latter also driving forward to provide the assist for Bennett’s second-half goal a superb curling effort that nestled in the far corner.

Bennett is another who now needs to produce moments of quality like

There is the frustration that they will not have the backing of 2,000 supporters at The Den after London was moved to Tier 3 of Covid-19 restrictions on Wednesday morning.

But at least Gary Rowett's side won't have the psychological baggage of not having won in so long. If they hadn't defeated Bristol City on Tuesday night it would have been the first time since 1997 they had gone eleven games in one season without a league win. Then they slumped from third to a fourteenthplace finish.

The Lions' 2-0 win at Ashton Gate moved them from seventeenth to fourteenth (before Wednesday's games) and at least stops that worrying downward momentum.

There is also the weight that was lifted off Mason Bennett's shoulders and the confidence he should take into the game against Chris Hughton's side.

Attackers can play as well as they like and be appreciated by their team-mates, but as Matt Smith told the News recently they are very well aware they are ultimately judged by what they chalk down in the goal column.

Bennett certainly deserved to get off the mark and he should be aiming to contribute much more in that respect this season.

The same is true of Tom Bradshaw, who hit his second goal of the campaign this week. No one ever doubts Bradshaw's workrate or committment, and his team-mates certainly value what he gives the side. But Millwall need to be a more free-scoring team and Bradshaw, given his experience and his obvious finishing ability, should be getting into double figures at this level. Before Wednesday night's fixtures, Millwall were the lowest scorers of the top sixteen teams in the Championship.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL HAVE been told by the EFL they cannot block Sky Sports from covering their game against Watford at The Den on December 29 as the fallout from the broadcaster's coverage of the fixture against QPR rumbled on this week.

Millwall were unhappy that Sky, on their website, claimed some Lions players would take the knee before the game against the Hoops, despite the fact the club had issued a statement saying their squad had decided on an alternative to the gesture.

Some supporters booed when players from Millwall and Derby had taken the knee three days earlier.

That prompted widespread condemnation in the media, which included some inaccuracies. One national tabloid also claimed some Millwall players would defy the club and take the knee ahead of kick-off in the London derby. And in an opinion column on a national website after the game, the claim was even made that players from Millwall and QPR had taken the knee and were applauded by fans, when none of the home side had done so.

Sky pundits Don Goodman and Keith Andrews were critical of the club for a letter they sent to fans before the game. Millwall wanted an apology from Sky for some aspects

of their coverage, but as of earlier this week they still hadn't received one and didn't know if one would be forthcoming.

The article making the claim about Millwall players was still on Sky's website when the News checked it on Wednesday morning before we went to press.

There was no movement on the issue this week despite communication between the club, the EFL and Sky. The EFL have a contract with Sky until 2024 worth £595million.

Meanwhile, Millwall's focus on the pitch is on preparations to face Nottingham Forest at home on Saturday.

The Lions were boosted by their 2-0 win at Bristol City on Tuesday night that ended their ten-game winless run.

However, boss Gary Rowett revealed after the game that Connor Mahoney had suffered an injury setback. The winger was set to return after a quad injury but could now be out until January.

Kenneth Zohore is also still not ready after a calf injury.

"I still think he's probably a couple of weeks away," Rowett said. "Connor Mahoney has also had a setback, he's going to be another two or three weeks away which is disappointing.

"We've had to do without some of those players that can change a game and create opportunities in a tight game. We know we're the sort of side that at the moment have got to work for everything. That showed [Tuesday] that when we do work hard we can still be a really, really good side."

The capital was placed into Tier 3 of Covid-19 restrictions from Wednesday which means that the 2,000 Lions supporters who had been allocated tickets against Forest now cannot go.

Millwall had split the 3,000 fans who bought season tickets into two groups, A and B. Those in the former attended games against Derby and QPR along with ballots to allocate the remaining tickets to the second group.

Those in the second category have now been left disappointed after the government’s decision.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard feels clubs should be exempt from restrictions. “I think when you are talking about if clubs can control the situation, then I think that they’ve shown so far that they can,” he said. “I would like to have thought something could be done to make it exempt where we can get that 2,000 number in.”

In a statement, Millwall said: “Supporters who were set to attend this weekend’s match will be given priority access to the first fixture following any necessary relaxation of the Tier restrictions in the future.

“Millwall will keep supporters updated as and when further relevant information is available.

“Thank you for your continued support and understanding.”
