Councillor Rebecca Lury, Tooley Street’s cabinet member for finance and resources, has warned that on top of wage stagnation local authorities had lost nearly 60p in every pound provided before 2010 due to austerity as spending skyrockets due to the pandemic. As the News has reported, the council is now facing a £12m funding shortfall.

She said the pay freeze would unfairly target public servants while profitmaking businesses are being bailed out.

“Our council is made up of thousands of front-line key workers,” Cllr Lury said.

“We are talking about carers, officers who are helping homeless people get a roof over their head each day, those

Over 75,000 small businesses in London could go bust by spring 2021

Last weekend marked ‘small business Saturday’, a grassroots campaign to encourage people to shop local. Coinciding with the event, the Labour Party is highlighting the ongoing threat the COVID-19 pandemic has on small and independent traders.

According to a new analysis of new Office for National Statistics figures, more than 100,000 small businesses have seen turnover plummet by more than half even before the second national lockdown was imposed - and almost 200,000 small companies do not have cash reserves to last more than three months.

It is estimated that at risk across London are 6,990 hairdressers and beauty salons, 1,260 hotels and B&Bs, 610 butchers,

working tirelessly to keep streets clean, managing the parks that are the only green space for some Londoners, and looking after families in crisis.

“These members of staff have been true public servants – putting residents first, working all hours and weekends, some in fear for their own health, and all in the context of a global health crisis.

“And it appears to be a truly thankless task. While the government bails out large, multi-million pound chain businesses, those same members of council staff, the lowest paid workers, have to stomach what amounts to a pay cut, after years of pay freezes already. How is that fair?”

Since late March, the council’s Southwark Emergency Support Scheme has received nearly 8,000 applications for financial help due to the pandemic. The council has also housed nearly 800 rough sleepers - nearly all in the borough - with 700 moved into longer term housing.

The local authority has also helped 5,000 households in financial difficulties cover the cost of food, fuel and other basic

essentials - at a cost of £1.3 million.

A further million has been ploughed into the Southwark Community Hub; a partnership between Southwark Council, the local NHS and GP surgeries, charities and community and volunteer groups to run its COVID-19 support. This is expected to continue into 2021, with a provisional budget totalling £3.2 million for 2020-21.

Cllr Lury added: “Without recognition of the work that local authorities do, they will continue to struggle, resources will dwindle and cuts will have to be made to vital services across the country.

“I would ask the government to reconsider, support front-line workers and save the services we depend on.”

Cathedral no longer ex catedra

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Cathedral has adopted a new cat, called Hodge, after the death of its previous feline mascot, Doorkins Magnificat.

The death of Doorkins in October made news around the world amid a minor controversy over the Cathedral’s decision to have a Thanksgiving service in memory of their beloved pet.

But coincidentally on the same day that the retired Doorkins died, a new cat arrived at the Cathedral - twoyear-old Hodge.

The Dean of Southwark, the Very Revd Andrew Nunn, said the decision to get a new moggy for the church was partly because of the sheer number of

mice running through the church.

“Situated where we are, between the river and the market you can imagine that at times the place resembles Hamelin rather than London!” he said.

“But on an emotional level we all missed having a little cat about the place.”

The Cathedral turned to CatCuddles, a cat sanctuary, to find Hodge, who had come to the centre because of a large growth on his face.

Staff at the animal charity had feared it was cancerous. “At CatCuddles, the cat was given a new name – Hodge – and investigations were immediately made into the cause of his large growth,” said the charity.

“More good news followed when a biopsy revealed no cancerous cells – the worse-case scenario that our team had been dreading.”

Eventually the swelling went down after antibiotics, and Hodge was adopted by the Cathedral.

“For the past couple of months Hodge has been getting acquainted with us and his new home. He has a voracious appetite both for food and love,” added the Dean.

“Everyone who comes in is immediately smitten; he is adorable.”

pitch perfect at the tate modern

Buskers told to face the river after noise complaints from residents living along the river

josh@southwarknews.co.uk The council has told buskers outside the Tate Modern to turn and face the river while singing in a bid to stop noise complaints.

Officials at the town hall said the move had greatly reduced the total number of noise complaints made - but it also caused complaints from City residents as the sound travels across the river.

Previously the busking pitch had faced towards the Tate Modern, but now buskers are asked to turn 180 degrees and face the other way.

The change was revealed in a question to the council’s environment boss, Cllr Catherine Rose, by ward councillor David Noakes.

It comes after the council set up a project group to look into the issue of noise complaints from residents living along the south bank of the Thames.

“Officers quickly identified that other factors such as reflected noise from

buildings did impact on noise levels for local residents,” revealed Cllr Rose.

"This was particularly relevant as the majority of complaints were about the busking pitch outside the Tate Modern.

“The buskers using this pitch were asked to turn through 180 degrees and face the river. This resulted in a great reduction in complaints made to the Council.”

She added: “There have however been some complaints from residents in the City of London as the sound can travel across the Thames and is on

occasion audible on the north bank.”

The council’s working group found that the majority of noise complaints were made by just four individuals.

A period of monitoring between July and August 2018 found that most of the noise was not loud enough to spark enforcement action.

During coronavirus, officers moved buskers on from outside the Tate, said Cllr Rose. A series of other recommendations, including more signage and moving the pitch will be looked at early next year.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Four patients in King’s College Hospital’s intensive care unit were followed over six months for Channel 4’s documentary Surviving COVID.

They included a previously healthy 61-year-old, Joaquim, who had been admitted the day before lockdown in March. Whilst on a ventilator and unresponsive, clinical care director Tom Best said he had a ‘much greater chance of dying than surviving’.

Miraculously, after months in a coma he was eventually able to go home with his step-daughter, describing her and his late wife as the ‘two angels’ who watched over him.

Early on in the programme Dr Best said of the pandemic: “There is nothing that I have experienced that can compare to this.”

For the families followed throughout the year, the same is true. Although three of the patients featured pulled through, none were unscathed by the chronic effects of the virus and the most serious complications it can cause.

One patient, 62-year-old David, who had caught the virus while recovering from cancer treatment, didn't pull through. Soon after only being able to visit him for the first time, doctors told his family the best they could do now was to ensure he had a ‘good death’ with loved ones by his side.

In one moving scene, one of the staff members who had helped care for the former builder gave him his ‘last offices’ - washing and preparing his body with care and attention after death, all the while speaking to him.

“We just treat them like they were just here,” he said, whilst gently explaining to David what he was doing.

“Because I’ve looked after him so much, I feel like I know him… even in death it’s a privilege to be here because this is their last moment.”

David’s devastated wife of 42 years, Gill, admitted they hadn't taken the virus seriously at first. “When COVID first came round and we went into

Southwark hospitals among first to get covid-19 vaccine GPs on stand-by to start delivering the vaccine next week

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust and King’s College NHS Trust were among the hospitals getting the new Pfizer vaccine on Monday in preparation for jabs to be given from Tuesday.

Patients aged 80 and above who are already attending hospital as an outpatient, and those who are being discharged home after a hospital stay, will be among the first to receive the vaccine.

Vaccines will also be given to highpriority vulnerable NHS staff.

GPs are also being put on ‘standby’ to start delivering vaccines in the community from next week.

The News has already reported how officials are on the hunt for mass Covid vaccination sites in Southwark.

Health secretary, Matt Hancock, said

it was a historic moment in the fight against the virus. “This coming week will be an historic moment as we begin vaccination against COVID-19,” he said.

“We are prioritising the most vulnerable first and over-80s, care home staff and NHS colleagues will all be among the first to receive the vaccines.

“We are doing everything we can to make sure we can overcome significant challenges to vaccinate care home residents as soon as possible too.”

The roll-out of the vaccine is challenging, because the vaccine needs to be stored at -70c. Once thawed, it can only be moved four times within that cold chain before being used.

Professor Stephen Powis, of NHS England, said he was confident that hospital staff were up to the task of rolling out the vaccine.

“The NHS has a strong record of delivering large scale vaccination programmes – from the flu jab, HPV vaccine and lifesaving MMR jabs – hardworking staff will once again rise to the challenge to protect the most vulnerable people from this awful disease,” he said.

The vaccine is about 95 percent effective and two shots are needed to achieve immunity.

The Law Centre has urged Tideway bosses to relook at compensation awards which were not given out during lockdown.

“We would ask that Tideway show some humanity by considering the impact of the pandemic, and look again at awards that have been either severely restricted or not awarded at all,” added Ms Causer.

“We would suggest that it is not just that awards need to be restored, but also, enhanced to make up for opportunities for respite that have been missed due to lockdown.”

But a spokesperson for Tideway said the company had only stopped paying out a small number of claims relating to hotel stays or holidays - which were not allowed during lockdown.

“Tideway also extended the timeframes in which residents could use respite to ensure no one missed out on respite due to the lockdown.

“The vast majority of respite awards implemented across the project, those not awarded holidays or hotel stays, continued to be implemented throughout the lockdown period.

We take the welfare of our residents very seriously and would urge anyone concerned about the impact of our vital work to contact the ICP [Independent Compensation Panel].”

Tobi survived complications including kidney failure, strokes and several cardiac arrests. His eldest son, Deji, described COVID as ‘an invisible war’.

“Pandemics and plagues are something we had forgotten about,” he said.

“The human race got quite big for its boots thinking something like this could never happen again.”

Southwark Law Centre takes up residents’ cases

Bermondsey residents living next to a construction site for the ‘super sewer’ say work THAT increased during lockdown is leaving them unable to escape the noise and dust.

Their plight has been taken up by the Southwark Law Centre, which has written to Tideway, the builder of the £4.2bn sewer, about the impact construction work has had.

Chambers Wharf is one of the main sites for the building work, which eventually will create a 25km new sewer

route under the Thames.

Residents also complain that compensation paid out by Tideway for disruption was stopped during the lockdown. Writing to Tideway, Sally Causer, of the Southwark Law Centre, said:

“This year has been difficult for everyone, but especially difficult for the mental and physical health of vulnerable residents.

constructing joy in bermondsey

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The iconic Bermondsey ‘joy slide’ which brought delight to Bermondsey children a century ago is being reconstructed - by a relative of the man who was responsible for the original.

Fergus Carr, who is an architect, designed the slide completely freeof-charge and it is currently being constructed by a specialist playgrounds company. It will be opened exactly a century on from the original.

The project is supported by the Friends of St James’ and Southwark Council, and has been four years in the making.

Part of the slide will have details of the history of the original. Planters of flowers will also follow, in a nod to the legacy of Ada Salter’s ‘beautification’ of Bermondsey.

A special ceremony to formally open the slide once complete is set to follow.

TfL could forcibly purchase a plot of social housing land in order to upgrade Surrey Quays station.

Canon Jenkins told the News he was hoping for a “special guest” to do the honours - but would not be drawn on who that person would be.

As the News went to press on Wednesday, transport authorities were seeking permission for a compulsory purchase order of land on Lower Road.

The move would mean the loss of a current car-parking space for Wandle Housing tenants currently living near the station. But bosses say they need the plot to build a new ticket hall in the station.

“The scheme provides a new ticket hall connecting to a passenger overbridge, which provides stair and lift platform access,” states a report presented to the TfL board on Wednesday.

“The installation of this new structure necessitates the acquisition of the

Property.” TfL is currently in talks with Wandle to see if the land can be purchased without using compulsory purchase powers, and the car-parking space may be relocated elsewhere.

The station upgrade is part of a project to promote new homes along the East London Line.

Alongside the station upgrade, Surrey Quays will see more trains, up to twenty an hour, in service to help ease congestion.

An entirely new Overground station is also planned for Surrey Canal Road, alongside upgrades to Canada Water Bus Station.

In total the upgrades are expected to cost around £90m, with around £80m coming from the Government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund.

It is hoped that the funding will unlock around 14,000 new homes along the route.

Justice Cutts refuses tree injuction

Bakerloo Line extension one step closer

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The route for the Bakerloo Line extension has been given protected status, meaning it cannot be built on by conflicting developments.

It comes after a consultation into the proposed extension of the tube route into Lewisham via the Old Kent Road revealed overwhelming public support.

The move would see two new stations created on the Old Kent Road - which appear likely to be called ‘Burgess Park’ and ‘Old Kent Road’ respectively.

The consultation also revealed support for a further extension of the route into Hayes and Beckenham Junction at a later date.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP, Neil Coyle, said the confirmed route

was great news for the campaign to ‘back the bakerloo.’

“This brings the extension a big step closer and all eyes are now on the timeframe for delivery, with construction needing to start in 2024 to ensure the Line is operational on time, delivering greater transport accessibility for Londoners and a national economic boost in jobs and housebuilding too!” he said.

“This win-win after such devastating economic damage through covid and job losses is crucial to us all.”

The proposals had earlier this year suffered a setback after TfL declined to ask the Government to fund the multi-billion pound project in the near future.

As the News reported, TfL declined to include the extension on its funding ‘wishlist’ to the Government earlier this year as it would not be realistic.

However, officials say they are in

“constructive dialogue” with the Department for Transport about funding the scheme.

If built, Southwark Council hopes to be able to build 20,000 new homes in the Old Kent Road area - but officials admit only around 9,000 are possible without the extension into Lewisham.

In a joint statement with other officials, council leader Kieron Williams said: “It is a hugely positive step that the Government is proceeding with safeguarding directions for the Bakerloo line extension, preventing premature development on sites required to deliver the project.

“Extending the Bakerloo line, delivered together with an upgrade of the existing line, would connect a historically underserved part of London to the tube network, whilst supporting the delivery of thousands of new homes and jobs.”

A High Court injunction to remove protestors guarding two trees in Sydenham Hill Wood from being chopped down was rejected by a judge last week.

The injunction, submitted by Southwark Council, was thrown out

by Justice Cutts last week, just before planning permission for felling expired on Thursday, December 3. The decision leaves the council's hands tied until new planning applications are submitted and approved but does not guarantee the oaks' future in the long term.

Activist Susan Haseldine led a group of volunteers who kept watch over the trees, 24 hours a day, from November 14, refusing to make way for the chainsaws.

Campaigners claim the council had ignored or failed to fully explore other options that would protect the two hundred year old trees while also repairing Cox’s Walk footbridge.

The council says removing the trees is the best and most cost effective solution for repairing the walkway without spiralling costs.

In a statement to the News, a campaign spokesperson said: “Now that the planning permission to fell the trees is lapsing, we hope that instead of

reapplying to get the trees down, the council will work with ourselves and other local interested organisations like the London Wildlife Trust, The Sydenham Hill Ridge Neighbourhood Forum, the Dulwich Estate and the Dulwich Society to find the most cost effective way forward to re-open and repair the bridge and safeguard the trees and protect the nature reserve they are growing in.”

Cllr Catherine Rose, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for environment, leisure and roads, confirmed the council was going ahead with applying for planning permission for the repairs, but gave few further details on what options would be presented in any future consultation.

“We are disappointed that we cannot yet fix the footbridge and reopen a safe route along Cox’s Walk to local people: people with buggies, wheelchair users, those who are less firm on their feet and all of the children who used to follow nature trails along this now closed section of the Green Chain Walk,” she explained in a statement last week.

“But we will of course continue to follow the letter of the law, and work to reaffirm the planning permission required, consulting with local people as part of this work, before taking any further action.”

The first joyslide was created in the grounds of Bermondsey’s St James’ Church after Arthur Carr of Peek Frean’s Biscuit Factory noticed children using the steps of the church as a slide.

It stood from 1921 until the 1980s, but then was pulled down after becoming a victim of vandalism.

Now Arthur’s great-great grandson, Fergus, has designed a new slide - and it’s under construction.

Canon Gary Jenkins, of St James’ Church, told the News that the project was half-way completed and that the new slide was expected to be open earlier next year.

“Over the years when you meet people around the parish, over and over again they tell us of their memories of the slide,” he said. “So we said, ‘let’s see if we can have another one and keep it going.’

“I’m delighted that it’s happening.

I’m delighted for the children and I’m delighted we’re marking the history of Bermondsey.”

The pitfalls of shared ownership are under the spotlight in a BBC Panorama documentary, The Home I Can’t Afford, focusing on the cost of so-called affordable housing and devastation of those trapped in unsellable homes due to the cladding scandal.

Shared Ownership has been widely touted as a way to help lower income buyers and those struggling to save for a large deposit to get on the housing ladder.

Owners buy a percentage share of their home, with the rest owned by their housing association, with the option to buy further shares in future towards full ownership.

The government wants to expand shared ownership as part of its £12 billion ‘affordable homes programme’, including allowing people to take on shares as low as ten per cent, rather than the current 25 per cent minimum.

Given the huge emphasis on affordable housing and the sheer number of shared ownership developments cropping up across London, campaigners now fear thousands are unaware of exactly what they are signing up to.

Katie Kendrick, founder of National Leasehold Campaign, has described shared ownership as ‘misleading by name’.

“It is neither shared nor owned,” she said. “The part you ‘own’ is in fact ‘leased’. Shared ownership is very enticing by the way it is advertised.

“It is often dressed up as ‘affordable housing’, however this can be a very costly way of getting on the property ladder, a ladder that has one rung, with many hidden costs.

“Very few ever staircase to 100 per cent because over time it is often unaffordable.

“Initially shared ownership may appear as a desirable option, but shared owners are actually just tenants with a landlord and are therefore subject to many restrictions.”

The Panorama episode followed one Southwark-based leaseholder, Deepa Mistry, who said rising service charge fees meant she was unable to buy further shares in her Peabody property, of which she owns 75 per cent.

Her service charge had doubled in just a few years and is now over three thousand a year. This year, during the pandemic, she had to start claiming Universal Credit and is now

In some cases shared owners face the prospect of being made bankrupt paying to fix the building defects caused by the developer in a worsening financial situation.

“It’s embarrassing to say it but I have accrued a lot of arrears because I cannot pay it,” she said of the service charge.

An obvious solution would be to sell up and move out of London somewhere cheaper. But despite being desperate to leave the property, she is now trapped in an unsellable home due to the cladding and fire safety scandal.

Since the Grenfell tragedy, her home is one of many new build homes effectively worthless until it is issued an EWS1 certificate confirming it is safe and any remedial works have taken place. As the News has reported, there are huge delays in fire safety work being completed; delays in certificates being granted due to the backlog and a shortage of trained surveyors; and questions over who pays - and how - for major works.

She is one of millions across the UK affected by the cladding scandal, with up to five per cent of private homes in England now believed to be unmortgageable.

“With the cladding crisis, many shared ownership tenants now find themselves facing totally unaffordable costs, they are unable to sell their home to move on or change their mortgage or job,” says Martin Boyd, chair of trustees at Leasehold Knowledge Partnership.

caused by the developer.”

Now living with three children in the two bed flat, Ms Mistry has no idea when she can ever sell and move to a more affordable area.

“I don’t know how many years it’s going to take,” she said. “I never imagined my children growing up as teenagers in this place but it’s looking more and more likely.

“I’ve trapped us. A decision I’ve made based on information that was given to me, and how things were sold as being affordable has now turned into the worst - the absolute worst - thing I could ever have done.”

The government has committed to reforming the leasehold system since 2017 but has been slow to act.

It has already agreed to ban the sale of new leasehold houses, though not flats; restrict grounds rents to zero for future leases; and ensure new shared owners do not have to pay maintenance and building costs for

But these changes have yet to be implemented and many do not affect those already living in shared ownership homes, or locked into lengthy disputes.

And they do not answer the ongoing questions over fire safety remedial works, usually costing between £10,000 and £100,000.

Ms Mistry bought a majority share of the property in 2010 and her lease agreement states that she is able to staircase at any time including within the first year.

“Service charges are recovered for costs incurred and do not generate income.

“Ms Mistry bought the property part way through the year and the charge was therefore lower than the full year amount which other leaseholders would have paid.

“We have dedicated teams to support homeowners and people who may be struggling financially.

We would encourage Ms Mistry to talk to us if that is the case.”

on top of its existing plans to ‘infill’ in estates; such as the work proposed in Nunhead’s Priory Court and Bermondsey’s Elim Estate.

Cllr Pollak also says council house retention is at a record high. In 2014 there were 301 right to buy completions, a number that has dropped to just 55 so far in 2020 - a long-term trend.

He attributes this partly to the property market in the borough where prices, even with a discount, are now beyond the reach of many tenants, and partly due to better communication around the costs associated with becoming leaseholders with regards to major works.

The decline in right to buy figures means that the council is now not only building homes more quickly than it is losing them through right to buy, it also - for the first time in 35 years - has seen its overall number of tenancies increase.

According to government statistics published in November, and compiled by the charity Action on Empty Homes, 3,630 homes in Southwark are no longer listed as primary residences, up from 523 in 2019. This is a massive rise of almost 600 per cent - the highest recorded in London borough.

There are also a further 2,358 homes listed as long-term empty properties in Southwark, up from 1,469 this time last year.

Director of Action on Empty Homes, Will McMahon, said: “The new figures are exceptionally worrying.

“It can’t be right that in the last four years we have seen an escalating housing crisis while the number of long-term empty homes keeps rising.

“Today there are nearly 100,000 families languishing in overcrowded and temporary accommodation in England at a time when we know that overcrowded housing is being linked to the spread of the corona virus and to higher mortality.

“During a national housing crisis we cannot afford to see over 268,000 homes stand empty across the country because of the lack of a government strategy to support councils to bring them back into use.

“It will be impossible to ‘build back better’ if we keep letting our housing crisis get worse.

“Action on Empty Homes calls on the government to introduce a new national empty homes programme to create additional housing supply for those in most housing need, utilising properties currently left vacant or in need of renovation.”

More homes are being built than the council loses through right to buy

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council says it is halfway to its target of building at least 2,500 new council homes by 2022 as it now ‘builds quicker than we lose through right to buy’.

According to the latest figures, shared at a housing delivery scrutiny meeting

on December 1, so far 1,251 homes are complete or with contractors on site including Aylesbury’s ‘package A’ homes newly acquired for social housing. This leaves 1,249, minimum, left to build to meet the target.

Papers prepared in advance of the meeting, by new homes cabinet member, Cllr Leo Pollak, said: “The council is currently forecasting to deliver in excess of the 2,500 homes and there is a high confidence of meeting this target.

“As with any programme there will be delays to some projects but with the capacity within the programme, it is still likely that the 2,500 homes target will be met.”

Over the Zoom call he told colleagues on the commission that construction workers had been ‘nothing short of heroic keeping the show on the road’

during the pandemic, but despite their best efforts at least eight sites were delayed or frustrated. There was only one scheme where the contractor had to down tools completely due to COVID-19.

Cllr Pollak says between 2900 to 3,200 will be delivered or have contractors on site by May 2022. His confirmed pipeline now lists over 4,500 planned new homes, but he says a less certain ‘emerging pipeline’ that he still ‘has confidence in’, lists around 6,000 opportunities in progress.

“I can already see us being half the way there in this generational effort,” Pollak said, referencing the council’s ambition of building 11,000 homes by 2043.

HELP bring cheer to OAPs this christmas

Donations and support needed to help our vulnerable elderly

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk 2020 has been a hard year for us all, but no one will be more vulnerable in the next two weeks than our elderly residents who have spent nearly a year without visitors, friends, and family, and are now facing a lonely Christmas.

That’s why, this December, the News is backing a special campaign - one of the most important in our history - to bring some festive cheer up and down our borough, and make sure every OAP knows someone is thinking of them this Christmas.

The Southwark Community Christmas Appeal, set up by United St Saviour’s Charity and Southwark Council, aims to raise nearly £22,000 for charities and community groups helping our older neighbours.

The funds will pay for Christmas meals, hampers and gifts to be delivered, and for socially distanced carols and community activities to be put on up and down the borough, so no one is left out.

In a year when the usual get-togethers and charity events like Christmas Day meals at Bacon’s College and Guy’s and St Thomas’ are unable to go ahead, the

role of charities, community groups, TRAs, and volunteers in bringing support to older people’s door-steps, and checking in with elderly residents, has never been more urgent.

“2020 has been an incredibly hard time for many Southwark residents, particularly the older and more vulnerable,” said Sarah Thuram, from United St Saviour’s Charity.

“Southwark’s amazing charities, community groups and tenants associations have been a lifeline for thousands of people throughout the lockdowns - providing food, toiletries, personal contact and often a shoulder to cry on.

“And while there is now light at the end of the tunnel, seeing family and friends this festive season may simply not be an option.

“We are all massively concerned about the impact of a long dark winter alone on older people, and the many people who simply cannot afford a Christmas meal.

“So we have set up this Christmas campaign so that the charities and community groups can once more reach out and help.

“So that people living alone feel cared for and connected, and so that people who have lost so much over the course

Stephen O’Rourke, 48, is accused of stabbing Bermondsey man Rocky Djelal, 38, near the children’s playground on October 31, 2018.

Mr Austen told the Old Bailey: “He didn’t say anything to me, I could tell he was dying.

“Blood was coming out of his mouth, and he was taking short sharp breaths.

“His eyes were open, and I could tell they weren’t responding to my being there.

“They didn’t flicker when I waved my hand in front of his face.

“I tried talking to him, telling him help was coming, but he didn’t respond.’

Jurors were earlier told by a member of the public that he saw the glint of a knife moments before the killing.

Tom Willis was walking through Southwark Park in southeast London to a gallery when he saw Stephen O’Rourke, 48, allegedly stabbing 38-year-old Rocky Djelal to death.

Mr Willis was on his way to meet friends at a nearby art gallery when a blood curdling scream stopped him in his tracks.

He turned to see what he first thought was a man fighting with an animal.

But he then realised it was one attacker pinning his victim to the ground, the court heard.

Mr Willis told jurors: “I was walking round there was quite a loud sort of yelp,

Rocky Djelal I would describe it as. It almost didn’t sound like…” pausing, Mr Willis then continued: “I did not assume it was a person.

“I did not move forwards anymore, but towards my left which is when I could fully see round the corner. Initially, it was just a sort of scuffle and that is when I thought at first it was possible a person and an animal.

“At that point I saw it was not an animal it was in fact two people. Initially it looked like they were in a fist fight. At that point I sort of turned around because I thought I did not want to get involved with that.

“I could see two sets of limbs. One was on their back and one was sort of standing over the one laying on the floor or on their back.’

Describing the man standing up, he added: “They had a hi-vis jacket on that was the biggest visual thing I could remember. They had a dark hoody with

of the year, have something to bring them joy at Christmas.”

The campaign will get essential funding to more than 30 local charities over the next few days and weeks and help TRAs reach people in need on their estate.

Thousands of freshly cooked Christmas meals will be distributed, along with thousands of food hampers, parcels and goodie bags to people most in need.

And plans are in the works for a Christmas helpline and an online party

for hundreds of carers looking after OAPs across the borough.

Southwark councillor Alice Macdonald is the communities and equalities cabinet member at Tooley Street, and a regular food delivery volunteer for Pembroke House.

She urged readers to help any way they can: “Southwark has an incredible community spirit. We know that our borough pulls together when times are tough.

“We need donations but the campaign is not just about that. It’s about what

we can all do as individuals, and how we can connect with the people around us.

“Whether you can pledge funds, volunteer your time or check in on an elderly neighbour, please support our campaign this winter.”

“I could see the person on top had both limbs coming down alternately. The right arm came up and I saw the glint of a knife and it was then I realised it was more serious than a fist fight.

“It was quite an obstructed view so it was never really clear. It all lasted sort of 30 seconds but as I say both arms were coming down.’

Mr Willis recalled to the court how the victim began to stumble towards him saying ‘help me’ and tried to climb over a fence but fell.

“When he fell face-down that is when I called 999 and got the police. I sort of stepped over the fence and at that point I think there was a few other people sort of started to collect round.

“There was maybe six or seven mothers in the playground with children. I remember there were two people who had come from the gallery. One guy bent

down next to him and there was a lady as well.

“There was at least two or three people on the phone to the police or ambulance.

I believe the victim’s father arrived fairly quickly which I think was because he had what I think was the victim’s phone in his hand.

“I believe he arrived before the police and ambulance arrived and he was asking what had happened, obviously very distressed.

“He was shouting: “Where is my boy?”.

The court has heard ‘paranoid’ O’Rourke believed Mr Djelal had murdered his brother Michael, 21, in 2000.

O’Rourke allegedly disguised himself as a builder and snuck up on Mr Djelal in the park near a children’s playground on Halloween in 2018.

The pair had grown up together in the same neighbourhood and their families had known one another all their lives.

Mr Djelal was arrested but released without charge and no one was ever prosecuted over Michael’s murder on 20 August 2000, the court has heard.

The accused killer donned a high-vis jacket, paint-splashed trousers and labourer’s boots to blend in with builders working near the park café and ‘surprise’ the victim, the court heard.

He stabbed Mr Djelal twice before plunging the blade 11cm into his back causing his lung to collapse at around 1.58pm, it was said.

Prosecutors allege Stephen enlisted his 34-year-old brother Jason, aka ‘Biggie,’ to assist in the killing and hide the bloodstained clothes after the killing.

Jason was initially arrested alongside O’Rourke but killed himself while awaiting trial, the court has heard.

O’Rourke, of Grosvenor Park, Kennington denies murder.

Arguing scheme shows ‘lack of ambition and understanding’

The Grade II listed building’s makeover includes paint matching the colours used in the 1920s, dado rails, wood-effect flooring, and a restored fire surround. A new platform shelter is also due to be constructed for travellers heading into London Bridge.

The station was opened in 1868 by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway company. It was designed by

Charles Barry Jr, the architect behind several Dulwich landmarks including Dulwich Park, New College, and St Stephen’s Church. Another of his works was the Great Eastern Hotel at Liverpool Street.

Station manager Nathaniel Owen, said: “I’m delighted that so much care has been taken to look after this popular historic building for the local community, while making it look and work better for our passengers.

"People travelling towards central London will also benefit from a new platform shelter being installed very soon.”

New rail boss coming from the underground

Claire Mann, a former director of the DLR who has held positions at TfL and London Overground, among others, will take up her role in early 2021.

Ms Mann said: “I’m really looking forward to joining the SWR team.

“This is a railway close to my heart and one that is vital for connecting so many diverse communities.

“I am passionate about delivering an excellent customer experience and building on the great work already underway to transform this railway.

“People are the most important part of any successful operation and I am looking forward to meeting the teams and individuals across the SWR network.”

Extinction Rebellion, Fossil Free Southwark, and Nunhead Knocks mutual aid group are threatening to pull out of Southwark Council’s climate emergency steering group, saying Tooley Street’s flagship ‘parklet’ policy shows ‘a lack of ambition and understanding’ and a ‘breakdown of genuine partnership’.

Southwark Council announced its first ‘parklet’ - public space for cycle storage, planters and socialising, was being installed in Walworth - last week.

Although many have welcomed the low-cost measure as progress in the right direction, and an improvement to overcrowded streets full of parked cars, the initiative has also received plenty of flak from residents online.

Bu beyond the social media mockery, in an open letter to Cllr Johnson Situ, Extinction Rebellion says the ‘plant pot in a bench’ is indicative of a lack of real progress in the council’s plans to achieve the ambitious target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

They are now demanding that the council immediately commissions an independent review of its plans and commits to holding a Citizens' Assembly.

Eloise Waldon-Day from Extinction Rebellion Southwark said: “We are really keen to engage positively with the council, but we are concerned

that our engagement within the Partnership Steering Group is being used as 'greenwashing'.

“We have repeatedly asked for transparency and accountability, and for the council to drastically upscale their ambition and respond comprehensively to the comments and concerns that have been raised

by Steering Group members, but we have consistently been let down.”

Karrim Jalali of Fossil Free Southwark, which backs their demands, said: “I think the letter hits the nail on the head. The council’s initial plans for community engagement were terrible, and when Partnership Steering Group members tried to address this with the council, they criticised us for delaying the strategy when it was the council who waited almost a year after declaring a climate emergency to do anything meaningful.

“We’ve invested a lot of personal

time to read through hundreds of pages of documents, raise numerous concerns and comments, but the response so far from the council leaves us with no confidence that this level of effort is worth continuing.”

Amardeep Singh Dhillon of Nunhead Knocks described the open letters’s demands as “realistic and fair”.

“It is the least the council should do, given what they committed to last year,” the campaigner said.

“The lack of concerted effort to engage Southwark residents on fighting climate breakdown only feeds fears that despite its declaration last year, the council doesn’t see this strategy as an important vehicle for action."

Extinction Rebellion threatens that without a commitment from Tooley Street by December 8, they will “not be able to continue to engage in good faith”. Southwark Council have been approached for comment.

Across Southwark as a whole, 40 per cent are car owners. But certain neighbourhoods have a much lower percentage of car ownership - and these should be the focus for councils, says campaigner Alice Roberts.

She says one example is the large Sainsbury’s car park in Dog Kennel Hill which could have been a better location for development than the section of Green Dale next to Dulwich Hamlet’s planned new stadium.

“In some parts of London as few as 30 per cent of households have a car yet all the streets are car parks,” she told the News.

“Cars parked on-street take up over

1,400 hectares of space, equivalent to 10 Hyde Parks in size.

“One way we can make better use of this space is to turn streets into parks.

“London has just half the green space it needs for a population its size and the situation is much worse in some inner London boroughs.

“It’s a shocking situation and it’s time to turn our grey space green.

“Boroughs can identify areas with low car ownership which are often deprived areas with lots of people living in flats.

“These can be matched up with parts of the borough which lack green space. Those should be the locations for a minimum of 30 new parks in each London borough."

0ver 160 domestic abuse arrests

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk In the first month since the Met’s new ‘predatory offender units’ were launched, more than 160 domestic abusers have been arrested.

Every basic command unit across London now has a team focused on finding and arresting ‘high harm’ offenders linked to domestic abuse, child abuse, sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

More than £7.5 million has been invested in the scheme, which has arrested more than 240 people since November 2, 161 of whom for domestic abuse.

According to the latest data, between March 9 and November 22, reported domestic abuse offences rose by 7.1 per cent.

In total, the Met has arrested a staggering 30,561 domestic abuse suspects this year - 2,000 more than in 2019.

Commissioner Cressida Dick said: “Tackling violent crime is my top priority, and has been since my first day as commissioner.

Referrals to Solace Women’s Aid were up by more than a fifth between May and October this year.

The charity, which works with Southwark Council to provide advice and support to victims of domestic abuse, says 21 per cent more women were supported during those six months than in the same period in 2019.

As the News has reported, domestic violence surged during lockdown. Solace Women’s Aid has now launched a Christmas appeal, raising funds to help meet the extra need for specialist therapy and trauma services.

“Trauma and the impact of domestic abuse on survivor’s mental health is all part and parcel of violence against women and girls and the long-term harm inflicted on survivors,” said Fiona Dwyer, Solace’s chief executive officer “This is why, at Solace, alongside running refuge services and places of safety for women and children to flee domestic abuse and violence, Solace provides specialist therapy and counselling services to help survivors on their long term journey to healing and recovery.

Southwark Council creates new domestic abuse deputy cabinet role

South Bermondsey ward councillor, Leanne Werner, was given the newly created role at October’s full council assembly meeting.

Like the country as a whole Southwark saw a sharp rise in domestic abuse cases during lockdown.

The council works with Solace Women’s Aid to provide advocacy, counselling, and children’s therapy for victims, as well as conducting a behaviour change programme for perpetrators. And, since July this year, those who are homeless due to

domestic abuse are automatically given priority allocation in social housing.

Councillor Leanne Werner said: ‘I’m honoured to be taking on the role of deputy cabinet member for domestic abuse during this critical time.

“The pandemic has seen a dramatic rise of domestic abuse cases across the country. Isolation has shattered support networks, making it far more difficult for survivors to get help or escape.

“Through my role I want to make sure that we have even more safe spaces in Southwark where people can access vital information on specialist domestic abuse services.”

Paramedics to get body cameras due to ‘drastic increase’ in physical attacks

josh@southwarknews.co.uk London paramedics will be given body-worn cameras because members of the public keep attacking them.

Bosses at the London Ambulance Service hope that the police-style cameras will reduce the number of attacks on emergency staff, and help bring attackers to justice.

According to its top executive, Garrett Emerson, there has been a “drastic increase” in the attacks on staff in recent years, with 625 assaults in the past twelve months alone.

The majority of those took place in homes medics were called to or in public places, not inside the ambulances.

Cyber attack sees school close for two days

Deptford Green, a secondary school on Angus Street, was forced to shut its doors to pupils on Friday and Monday after falling victim to a cyber attack.

The school reopened on Tuesday after the problem was resolved.

Parents were notified of the issue on Friday. “Due to a large scale security attack on schools, our

physical assaults against LAS staff and volunteers in recent years.

“Data from 2004 to March 2020 reveals a 72% increase and in the last 12 months an estimated 12 assaults per week, 625 reported physical assaults on staff.”

As a result, bosses agreed in September to roll out the cameras across the whole Trust “as a measure to help reduce the number and impacts of assaults on crews,” he added.

A small number of crews at the service had been involved in a national trial of the cameras, funded by the government.

The trial ended in November, paving the way for the cameras to be rolled out across the Trust.

The LAS were contacted for details on the time-frame for the rollout, but did not receive a response before going to press.

The historic Bermondsey marketplace will see traders selling their Christmas wares up until Christmas eve.

Stalls include businesses selling traditional baked goods, artisanal gifts for loved ones and clothes for women and children.

“We’re all about promoting what Bermondsey has to offer, hosting events for local people and those from further afield, whilst providing a platform for

our excellent local craftspeople, food producers and hot food vendors to grow their businesses,” said Make it Blue, the organisation behind the market days.

The food and crafts market is running on the 12th, 19th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd & 24th of December. The stalls will be open from 10am to 4pm.

It comes amid a bid to regenerate the marketplace.

The market was last year awarded a £2.3m regeneration grant from the Mayor’s office to “turn Bermondsey’s historic town centre and street market into a thriving area, building on The Blue’s identity as the ‘Larder of London.’”

Work is expected to begin early next year.

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Police broke up a warehouse rave in Bermondsey at the weekend only to be greeted with some revellers throwing objects at them.

Crowds gathered in a warehouse near Southwark Park Road late on Saturday night before being broken up by police.

One witness estimated an attendance of more than 150 people.

Officers said they were called because of “a large number of people” gathered at the illegal music event.

They dispersed the crowd from the warehouse, with party-goers moving on to other surrounding roads in the area such as Galleywall Road.

“Protective gear was deployed after a small number of missiles were thrown at officers,” said a Met Police spokesperson.

“There were no reports of any injuries. No arrests.”

One witness told the News: “There were hundreds of them, and there were police vans everywhere.

“It was definitely a rave, I’ve never

seen so many police cars and vans. But I didn’t see any trouble, I just saw them all running around.

“It’s just unnecessary and dangerous, all these people getting together. But they have got to get some security on these railway arches, they need to do something about it.”

While another added on social media: “Sounds like a warzone out there with all the sirens and the helicopter overhead.”

A section 35 dispersal order, which gives officers the power to ban people from a certain area for 48 hours, was used and the rest of the crowd went home.

The power can only be used if police suspect that members of the public are being harassed by a person’s behaviour or that crime and disorder will take place, among other conditions.

Pictures of the event appear to show police assembled near the trading estate on Galleywall Road.

A police helicopter was also called out to the event, and was seen circling south Bermondsey as police broke up the gathering.

Then aged just six, the youngster was thrown from the Tate’s viewing platform in a random attack by Jonty Bravery in August 2019.

It left him with life-changing injuries and needing round-the-clock care.

But in an update to wellwishers, his parents say their “little knight” is able to walk again and has begun singing.

“Despite everything, he continues to

make efforts and progress: he begins to walk with a tetrapod cane while we hold him by the back of the coat for balance,” said his parents, who are from France.

“He also has less pain, so the doctors were able to lower his medication. He tries to do more and more things with his left arm like holding his tube of toothpaste or his glasses case to close it.

“He continues to recover his breath.

He still speaks very slowly, but now speaks word by word and no longer syllable by syllable.”

Because of coronavirus, the boy is

no longer allowed to go home from hospital at weekends, and is also struggling with his memory more than a year on from the fall.

“He no longer remembers what he did that day or what day it is,” said the parents.

Bravery was jailed for at least fifteen years for attempted murder this year, with a court hearing he had committed the crime because he wanted to be on TV. A fundraiser for the victim to pay for the costs of his care was set up by well-wishers, and has to date raised more than £260,000.

Joshua Fasoro, (b. 22.09.00) was charged on Wednesday, December 2 with four counts of possession of an offensive weapon, possession of

cannabis, and aggravated vehicle taking.

Reports of a shooting in Woolwich Church Street were made to police in the early hours of Monday, November 30.

Three other people aged 20, 21, and 22 were arrested in connection with this incident on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, possession of ammunition, possession of an

offensive weapon and aggravated vehicle taking.

One has been recalled to prison, while the other two suspects have been released pending further enquiries.

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses and information.

Mystery remains over death of ten-year-old girl

Southwark brought case to High Court in order to make decision on the care of her siblings

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A mystery remains in the case of a ten-year-old girl found dead in her bedroom, a top judge has said.

Social services at Southwark Council had brought a case to the High Court over the death of the youngster in 2016, alleging she was killed by either her parents or siblings.

They argued that the family had “engaged in obfuscation and the erection of a wall of silence to impede and distract the investigation,” into the youngster’s death.

Pathologists told the court that she had died of strangulation, but also had genital injuries.

Social services had sought for the judge, Sir Mark Hedley, to make a finding on how the girl had died to help them make decisions about the care of other children in the family.

But in a judgement published at the end of November, Sir Mark concluded

that Southwark had failed to prove its case to the required standard.

He said he had “no clear answer to give” into how the girl died. A police investigation into the girl’s death was inconclusive, and nobody was charged in relation to her death.

Sir Mark criticised the police’s investigation into the case, saying officers “lost opportunities for proper investigation.”

This was the third time civil court judges have been asked to make findings about the cause of the girl’s death.

Appeal judges had overturned earlier judgements and ordered fresh hearings. Judges had also criticised previously the police inquiry.

Sir Mark explained his decision in a ruling published at the end of November after a private trial staged partly in London and partly over Zoom.

The deceased girl and her family cannot be identified in media reporting of the case for legal reasons.

Alleged serial burglar Desmond Mark charged after public appeal

Desmond Mark, aged 51 (b.02.03.69), of no fixed abode, was arrested on suspicion of burglary by officers from the South East Basic Command Unit on

Monday, November 30.

He was taken to a south London police station and was charged on Tuesday, December 1, with nine counts of burglary, possession of cocaine, and a racially aggravated public order offence.

He appeared at Bromley Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, December 2 and was remanded in custody to appear at Woolwich Crown Court on January 5, 2021.

Peckham teen guilty of manslaughter Taylor Williams was fatally stabbed in Basingstoke

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Peckham teen has been found guilty of manslaughter after a fatal stabbing in Basingstoke in an apparent drug robbery attempt.

Terence Maccabee, 19, of Radnor Road, stood trial with co-defendant Olamide Soyege accused of killing eighteen-year-old Taylor Williams in summer last year.

Maccabee and Soyege, of Dagenham’s Mayswood Gardens, had denied killing Williams in a dispute over county lines drug dealing.

But a jury at Winchester Crown Court found Soyege guilty of murder and Maccabee guilty of manslaughter.

Maccabee was cleared of murder.

Along with a third defendant, Paige Taylor, 24, of St Michael’s Road in Basingstoke, both Maccabee and Soyege were found guilty of robbery of an unnamed victim on August 31 and conspiracy to rob Taylor Williams and others.

The court heard that Soyege, Maccabee and Paige Taylor were dealing drugs as part of a county lines operation and had plotted to rob the victim of drugs on the evening of August 31.

The victim was said to be a member of a London based drug network who had been staying in Basingstoke when his rivals turned up and tried to rob him.

Prosecutors said Soyege threatened Taylor at knifepoint. A fight then broke out after Taylor pushed Soyege, who retaliated with a punch.

Victim, Taylor Williams following the struggle and then realised he had been stabbed.

Paramedics were called and found Taylor in the street collapsed with stab wounds to his chest and right armpit and another laceration to his left forearm.

His death was caused by the chest wound, which penetrated his heart.

Just minutes later, a further call was made to the Ambulance Service. This time, they attended a road around two minutes from the original scene, and found Terence Maccabee had been stabbed.

He had sustained five stab wounds and he was placed into an induced coma while being treated in hospital.

He was later arrested on suspicion of

murder while still in hospital.

“Words cannot express the way we feel about losing a much loved son and brother,” said the victim’s family.

“Taylor was a charming, loving and funny young man with a large extended family who supported him throughout his years.”

Kate Anderson, CPS Wessex Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor, said: “We worked with Hampshire Constabulary to ensure we had all the evidence we needed to secure a conviction in this case, including mobile phone and forensic evidence.

“We believe the tragic death of Taylor Williams was as a result of a dispute over drug dealing in the Basingstoke area.”

Deptford robber given 35 years for murder

Police are still appealing over £5,000 Rolex watch, for which Danny Pearce was killed

Twenty-four-year-old David Egan, from Ashmead Road, was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court on Monday, December 7, after being found guilty of murder, possession of an offensive weapon and a firearm, and robbery.

Danny Pearce was 28 when he died in Greenwich on July 15, 2017. He was attacked while walking with his partner and two friends in King William Walk after enjoying a night out at a jazz club.

Two men accosted him shortly after midnight demanding he hand over his watch. After refusing, he was chased and repeatedly stabbed in the street in front of his horrified loved ones.

Danny was pronounced dead at the scene. Although a post-mortem recorded his cause of death as multiple stab wounds, police also found gunshot

grazing and evidence of at least four shots fired in his direction as he attempted to flee.

Egan was arrested and charged on 9 May 2017. He has also been found guilty of two further robberies in July that year.

Danny’s watch has never been recovered. Detectives would like to speak with anyone who has been offered a silver Rolex, worth around £5,000.

Detective Inspector Jo Sidaway said: “This was a truly horrific attack on an innocent man who had the rest of his life ahead of him.

“The level of violence shown towards him was shocking.

“Danny’s family will have to spend the rest of their lives without him and while I know today’s sentence won’t bring him back, I hope it does give them some closure.”

Police staff and officers in Southwark have been supporting Peckham’s Pecan food bank this winter.

PC Vicky Boswell, who is based at Peckham Police Station, has been coordinating donations from her colleagues and volunteer police cadets. She has also personally been helping families in crisis in her role as a response officer, and helping to identify people in need of extra support from local charities.

She said: “I’ve seen an increase in mental health calls due to the impact of COVID-19; people who have lost their jobs or been furloughed, and more and more people who have felt the impact of isolation, and have struggled to cope without friends and family. Some have lost loved ones and it’s very sad to see people in such a desperate state.

“I did a ‘big shop’ for a family after they had lost their income and didn’t have any school lunch vouchers both parents had lost their zero-hour contract jobs. I know it’s not what police would usually do, but it played on my mind so much, even after I had done everything I could in my role as a police officer.

“The parents had plans to feed their children and not themselves, and were “ashamed and too proud” in their own words to go to the foodbank. After a lot of explaining and the food delivery after the initial welfare check, they agreed to accept help from their local foodbank.

“I also gave them a BMX bike, which someone local to where I live was giving away for free. The relief on the parents’ faces when I was able to help them was visible, and I hope that it took the strain off them, so that they could relax for a few days and enjoy time with their children. The dad was in tears.”

She added: “This Christmas the demand is likely to be phenomenal as more and more businesses close or go bankrupt. “Just putting something extra in your trolley might be the difference in someone eating or not.

“Christmas brings out the best in people and it’s the season of goodwill.

“I believe it’s important that people see the police as normal human beings and caring people, who are willing to help strangers they’ve never met. I think it’s also important for us to recognise how lucky we are ourselves.”

Pecan has seen a surge in users this year, with demand regularly outstripping supply.

Last year it supplied 12,000 emergency food parcels in total - a number already surpassed this year by this October.

During April and September the food bank has helped nearly 7,000 adults and more than 4,1000 children.

For the second year running, Govia Thameslink Railway is launching its flagship Great Sock Appeal to support homeless people, with donations going to charities across its network including The Connection at St Martins, near Blackfriars.

Last years, more than 4,000 pairs of socks were donated. This year, the campaign is being held digitally. So instead of donating in person, staff and passengers are being asked to donate via a fundraising page.

The aim is to reach more than last year’s £8,344 - enough for more than 4,000 pairs of socks.

Allen Howe, a senior employee at GTR, says the campaign is particularly important to him due to his own experience of homelessness.

He started sleeping on the streets at just sixteen.

“I’d just completed my O-Levels and then that was it; I was on the streets.

"I tried to seek help from the local authorities, but I was too old to be put into care and too young for the type of accommodation they had.

Their advice was to move back home, which just wasn’t an option for me.

“Although I could’ve easily just given up, I knew I had to keep on pushing to try and get myself out of the situation. I found better work with a local retailer, which had cooking and washing facilities.

“I was still living on the streets but could at least make myself look presentable – this helped to keep my circumstances a secret from everyone I worked with.”

By eighteen he was living in a bedsit and at the beginning of a career in retail before moving into management roles for hostels, benefitting from his own insight into living in insecure housing. Allen joined GTR in March.

“There’s a huge stigma around being homeless. People often think it’s related to drugs or alcohol – or that you’ve done something to get yourself there.

“The average person doesn’t realise that if you miss just three mortgage payments, you too could find yourself on the streets.

“There were many times I felt like giving up, but if you do then you’ll never experience the positive side of life.

“I’m now in a happy relationship and have two daughters that I absolutely adore.

“Don’t be too proud to ask for help – there are ways to get you out of whatever situation you may be facing.”

£31,025 raised by link age young people’s dreams of hope Monday marked the first annual Day of Hope in the UK, commemorating what would have been Damilola Taylor’s 31st birthday.

Held on December 7, the event saw youth ambassadors from around the world share their own messages of hope for the future and advice to their peers.

Damilola’s father, Richard Taylor OBE, said: “My hope is for my son’s legacy to be one of hope, life and opportunity.

“For every young person to have aspirations and the chance to pursue their dreams.”

Two Millwall football academy players were among those sharing their own dreams and messages of support to other young people.

Seventeen-year-old Chin Okoli, from Lewisham, said: “I wanted to make my parents proud, and that’s still my motivation today. I want to make my parents proud of me."

He added: “My advice to young people would be to keep working hard. Do not compare yourself to others around you.

“To understand that everyone is on their own individual journey, and this is in everything - not just football - everyone is on their own journey and your time could come to you when you least expect it.

“So just to keep working hard and be ready. And also to also understand that no matter where you come from, no matter your past, there is always a good future out there for you.”

Fellow academy member 18-yearold Nana Boateng, from Lambeth, said his goal is to make my family and friends proud.

“My advice to young players is to be disciplined and to work hard and, finally, to be patient. Because in the situation where things aren’t going right for you, you need solutions to overcome your obstacles.”

Link Age Southwark raised an incredible £31,025 through this year’s Big Give Christmas Challenge.

The charity got in touch with the News with an update on their fundraising after we encouraged readers to support the appeal in last week's edition.

Carers and residents at Anchor Greenhive’s home in Peckham have thanked neighbours for help decorating their Christmas tree.

The community event saw neighbours decking out the tree in the home’s entrance in Bayards Road on Thursday, December 3, while wearing PPE and social distancing.

Irene Guppy, aged 83, has lived in Greenhive since August this year. She said: “It was lovely to see the lights come on and the tree looks absolutely beautiful.

“It’s a shame we haven’t been able to celebrate Christmas in the usual way, but it was still very nice to see everyone coming over to help decorate our tree with the decorations we made.

“Christmas is one of my favourite times of year and to get a chance to do something for it even during such a challenging time was really special for me.”

The home’s manager, Yanique King, also thanked those who took part.

“A huge thank you to everyone who came to help decorate our Christmas tree, it was a lovely occasion and showed that despite all the current challenges we can still celebrate Christmas in our own way," she said.

“This is just one of the lovely things we have planned for our Christmas celebrations. We will also be hosting a Christmas Cake competition and residents are also looking forward to the virtual Christmas carol performance at the Old Vic.”

Vaccine: Welcome news to end the year with T his is my last column of 2020 and I’m sure I am not the only one glad to see the back of a year that has seen the UK become the worst affected country on our continent by COVID in terms of excess deaths and damage to our economy.

Some of the damage could have been avoided if measures had been taken more swiftly and I hope 2021 sees a full inquiry into our pandemic planning, the government’s response and future risk management.

I want to thank everyone in Southwark for the sacrifices made this year. Whilst our infection rate is relatively low, other parts of our capital see far larger numbers and London is by no means safe yet so please continue taking care and looking out for one another – especially older or more vulnerable family, friends and neighbours.

Whilst it is fantastic that a vaccination is now becoming available, please do not take risks.

I will be having the vaccine as soon as possible and hope everyone interested in our collective safety will do the same; there is no greater action you can take than getting a vaccine as soon as it is offered.

It has felt like a real treat to get back inside a pub after the second lockdown and our local hospitality sector has taken vast strides to be safe.

When the reopening was announced, I was heartened to see local businesses receive huge numbers of reservations, with The Mayflower in Rotherhithe taking 750 bookings! This will help businesses, employees and our local economy.

After the vaccination has been rolled out, our economy will also need a shot in the arm and it is good

to end the year with positive news about a campaign I’ve been pushing alongside our council for years: I had it confirmed in the House of Commons that the land has now been safeguarded to ensure the Bakerloo Line extension can be built.

This should mean new jobs, homes and brilliant new transport links for Southwark, but I will keep pressing ministers for the resources to ensure construction begins on time in 2024.

Sadly, the chancellor missed an opportunity to provide a more immediate boost to our economy in the government’s spending review.

Instead of rewarding the care workers and teachers who have valiantly worked on the frontline to keep crucial services and support running throughout the COVID crisis, their pay has been cut in real terms and it seems the Tories’ pledge to ‘end austerity’ was another false promise. Taking money out of people’s pockets is no solution to the dire straits our country faces as a result of the twin damages of COVID and Brexit, with the ‘oven-ready deal’ also proving to be another Johnson fantasy.

His legacy as Prime Minister could be the worst, with our economy trashed, national security undermined and the future of the United Kingdom hanging in the balance with Johnson’s every utterance propelling support for the divisive SNP in Scotland.

There is much to be concerned about regarding our country’s current travails, but I hope this Christmas brings some peace and joy to everyone after the tumultuous 2020 we have all been through.

Merry Christmas, best wishes for 2021 and please continue to stay safe!

Stopping the need to drive short journeys

A

health charity, Guy’s and St Thomas’s Charity, is funding a trial of measures to enable walking and cycling in three areas of Southwark with high levels of air pollution, child obesity and social deprivation - Peckham, Camberwell and Walworth.

I’d like to see every household in the study area get a letter with the good news, along with details of how you can hire a bike for a month or join a car club, free cycle training, and a map showing cycle routes and local businesses within a five-minute walk. Planters are just a first step. Unfortunately, Southwark Council hasn’t done this yet.

Some people suggest it would be fairer to try to ‘share out’ traffic – but that assumes that we are stuck with current dangerous levels of traffic and pollution. As if it’s a fixed quantity, like a bucket of dirty engine oil.

In fact, all road traffic has increased in London over the last ten years. But while the numbers on main roads have stayed steady, side streets have suffered a steep increase (up from 5.4 to 9.3 billion annual vehicle miles from 200919). Google, Waze and other routefinding apps redirect drivers to side streets. This increases the risk of collisions and serious injury, and puts people off walking and cycling.

We can ask the apps to change the algorithm – ‘to put more weight on child safety and less on driver time savings’, as Rachel Aldred, Professor of Transport at the University of Westminster, says. But will they make the change of their own accord?

We can ask car-owners to think twice. Half of car journeys in London are less than 3km long. That’s about as far as Elephant to Camberwell.

On a bike, at a leisurely pootle, it takes fifteen minutes. Fewer people using cars to take short trips means less congestion, so anyone who has to drive or take a bus will find their journey time is more reliable.

Most immediately, we can make sure it feels safe and enjoyable to walk and cycle. That means protected cycle lanes on main roads and less traffic on side roads. Instead of calling for the bucket of dirty engine oil to be spread around, let’s stop adding to it.

Beormund Community Centre set to close after council pulls funding What a disgrace. I spent a lot of time volunteering there. I ran two summer play groups there and helped out with the various groups. I was also a committee member. Moment to savour, but pandemic not over

T

his week marks the beginning of the end of the coronavirus pandemic in Southwark.

Nearly 1,000 vaccines had arrived into Southwark as we went to press, with local hospitals Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s College Hospital among those dishing out the jabs.

Patients at the hospitals were among the first in the whole world to get the new Pfizer vaccine, which is around 95 per cent effective. Those aged over 80 and vulnerable frontline NHS staff are set to get the vaccine, alongside care home workers and residents.

Officials are on the hunt in earnest for mass vaccination sites in Southwark for the new year.

One patient at Guy’s, Lyn Wheeler, 81, got the vaccine on Tuesday, the first day it was available.

“I hope many, many people around the world will benefit from the vaccine,” she said as she stood beside the Prime Minister, who was paying a visit to the vaccination centre. We, too, hope the same.

This is a moment to celebrate: A process that normally takes years has been achieved in just months. It will save an incalculable number of lives once fully rolled out. We will again, in the not too distant future, be able to see our friends and family again after what has been a hellish year.

But the so-called ‘V-day’ is also a moment of reflection. Many in Southwark have lost their lives to this dreadful virus. We at the News have often detailed the anguish and pain felt by their families at lives taken too soon and before their time.

The sad truth is that more families may yet experience that heart-rending loss before the vaccine is fully rolled-out. So while this is a moment of jubilation for Southwark and the nation, we cannot afford to let our guard down.

It is in memory of those people that we all must continue to follow the rules until this disease is finally beaten.

A Guy’s patient who was among the first in the country to get the new coronavirus vaccine has gone a different type of viral for complaining on telly that he couldn’t find a parking space near the hospital.

Martin Kenyon, 91, was outside the hospital when he was chanced upon by CNN’s Cyril Vanier for an interview.

Kenyon has won fans for his typically British understated answers to the US news outlet’s questions.

Asked how he felt, Kenyon responded that the whole affair was “very unexciting.”

He was late for the appointment because of a lack of car-parking space around Guy’s Hospital, he said, and added: “Well, there’s no point in dying now is there?”

Potted panto perfect for a covid Christmas

Perhaps this weren’t exactly the same as the pantos we have seen and loved before but every single person in that restricted audience had a fantastic time because the actors in their bubble on stage gave everything required of them for our great Christmas tradition, writes Michael Holland.

Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner have once again created a brilliant Potted show, and this time one that combines all of the well-known pantomimes, plus a bit of Dickens, with some Sound of Music dropped in, and a few other Christmas favourites getting a mention.

Besides just a tad of help from a

beautiful fairy and a chestnut seller appearing on stage, this is a two-man show that seems like an extravaganza with a cast of thousands. Seeing Jeff and Dan magically create Cinderella and the two Ugly Sisters, or Snow White and all Seven Dwarves is worth the ticket money on its own.

Potted Panto is pretty well full on for

Peter’s panto gets political Despite many social event cancellations, keeping the festive spirit alive is Peter Duncan with his homegrown pantomime - Jack and the Beanstalk - that loses none of the genre’s fun-filled playfulness, even though the themes do reference current weighty global issues, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor.

So, if you’re looking for entertainment this Christmas you’ll be relieved to know this wonderful production will be available online and screened at 55 UK cinemas.

Given current restrictions, Jack and the Beanstalk’s tale unfolds with Peter Duncan in very nice suburban mansion house, later spilling out into the garden where Nicola Blackman as the Garden Fairy sets the scene of this Garden Pantomime. In exchange for the shouting out so characteristic of panto, the colourful Garden Fairy reminds viewers to interact by shouting at the screen, so trust that adults and children will be virtually united shouting their ‘Fe Fi Fo Fum’ from the

comfort of their homes throughout this show.

“The earth is in trouble, the ice cap is melting, the climate is bad, all is in chaos, and the people are mad,” Fairy reminds us, leaving us to fill in the gaps and take responsibility by taking care of our planet.

But we’ll need to put some effort in as the epitome of destructiveness arrives via the character of Flesh Creepy, played by Jos Vantyler, the former butcher and side kick to the Giant, arrives looking steam-punk in his goggled hat and plum velvet garbs.

Championing panto silliness in abundance is Peter Duncan’s playing of Jack’s mum Dame Trott, wafting about in rainbow dresses, rosy cheeks, and purple hair, delivering jokes, songs, dances and one-liners. Duncan, along with cast members, shines throughout, deservedly so, considering he wrote the words, songs, as well as part-directed, working to get this pantomime up and running.

Supporting his vision, the cast give their all delivering this festive tale, weaving contemporary messages into the storyline,

such as reminding viewers to stand apart, of parents working online, the Furlough scheme, the planet and, finally, the pantomime of politics informing us that ‘Pantomime, like politics, has some very dodgy players’ Giant of a Pantomime, a viewing delight.

And for more laughs the prince wouldn’t kiss Sleeping Beauty out of her slumber because she hadn’t cleaned her teeth for a hundred years, and Abanazer, the sorcerer in Aladdin, ended up as Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. Add in the gags galore on Covid and it did not take long at all to forget the troubles of the world outside and get focussed on singing louder than the other half of the theatre.

The beauty of pantomime for me is the little kid chuckling when everyone else has stopped, the boy still laughing at the fart joke from five minutes before, and the girl who thinks the Dame’s pink feather boa is worthy of hysterics.

Potted Panto creates moments just like those for children and goes a long way towards making a merry Christmas.

Of course precautions are taken to keep the audience safe, who have to play safe themselves. But above all, panto is Christmas and Potted Panto is up there with the best.

Although the Arment family has become a huge part of Walworth and South London history, its roots are firmly in the East End of London, writes Neil Crossfield...

Third generation Arments’ owner Roy owes his shop to grandfather, William Peter Arment. William was born on August 23, 1886 in Ratcliffe, now commonly known as Shadwell, in the old County of Middlesex, which then covered much of London north of the Thames. He was the son of William James Arment, the landlord of the Sydney Arms Public House in Poplar’s Arcadia Street.

William Peters’ life, however, would be turned upside down in 1900 when both his father and his mother died within months of each other when he was just fourteen. They were only 40 at the time of their deaths.

Losing both parents at the tender age of fourteen would have been disastrous for most but William was obviously a resilient young man.

The 1901 census shows that after his parents died, he went to live with another family in Poplar and found himself a job as a messenger in a dry dock.

A decade later, the industrious and entrepreneurial William appears on the 1911 census as a tobacconist shopkeeper at 218 High Road, Leytonstone. At this stage he is still only 25 years old. According to the census that he is working on ‘his own account’; that is, running his own business.

William married Emily Louise Slater

on April 30, 1911 at St John the Baptist, Leytonstone. Emily had been born on December 5, 1885 and was also a Poplar girl.

The 1901 census lists her as a domestic house maid. A decade later she was employed as a waitress.

In 1914, they moved to 386 Walworth Road to take over Evans Pie and Eel shop, where Emily’s sister was already working. At that point the shop was still owned by the Evans family, but the Arments were in the process of buying it and paying off the debt. For now, the name ‘Evans’ still hung over the door.

When the Arments moved south of the river, Walworth was the most densely populated half square mile in London. Many of its inhabitants lived a precarious existence in slum housing yet, despite this poverty, Walworth was a vibrant and bustling community - with plenty of pie and mash competition.

The 1914 Post Office Directory shows other other Eel Pie Shops operating at that time in Walworth, including those of Miss Harriet Fooks at 29 Westmoreland Road; Alfred Hilliers at 2 Elephant Road; William Plummers at 42 East Street; and Harry Woods at 22 Draper Street.

We know that pie and mash had been served in Walworth since at least 1875, when Henry Blanchard was trading from a shop at number 43 Walworth Road.

By the time William and Emily made Walworth their home, they had already had a daughter - Emily Rebecca Elizabeth - born in 1912. Another little

girl, Violet, came along in 1915.

In between, the First World War had also cast its shadow. William attested at Southwark Town Hall on December 10, 1915 but did not enlist until April 18, 1917.

He served as a gunner with the 38th Siege Battery, part of the Royal Garrison Artillery, and went to France in September 1917. He received a gunshot wound three months later in December but survived, and was demobilised from the Army on February 9, 1919.

A third daughter, Gladys was born in 1917 and a fourth, Ethel, in 1920.

Their only son, also William James, father of Roy Arment, was born in 1923. Conditions were still tough in Walworth throughout the 1920s but the shop must have flourished as in 1927 their debts were finally paid off and the name ‘Arments’ finally replaced ‘Evans’ in the shopfront.

Sadly, like his parents, William Peter also died young. He was just 45 when he passed away in 1931. From then on, his bereaved wife and children took over the running of the shop, which was eventually handed down to his son William James. Known as Bill, he lived until 1993. His son, Roy, took over with Cheryl in 1983, and are running the shop to this day.

As Goddards of Greenwich’s was founded in 1890, Manzes’ first shop opened in 1902, and F. Cookes of Hoxton closed in 2019, Arments now has a strong claim to be the oldest pie and mash shop still operating in London.

Lynn AC Boxing’s Terry Pearson said there is a risk of amateur boxers being lost too early to the professional ranks as they seek competitive action.

The Wells Way club reopened last week after London was place in Tier 2 of regional restrictions.

England Boxing have also pointed out how much would be lost to communities and the effects on physical and mental health.

Southwark Aquatics aiming for 2021 revival

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk SOUTHWARK AQUATICS Swimming Club is aiming to grow its numbers next year after an “exceptionally tough” 2020 when its revenue stream was hit hard by lockdowns.

Training at SASC restarted on December 3, with chairman Andy Moore grateful that the government recognised “sport and leisure are key to the wellbeing of everyone”.

The club organised virtual training sessions among other activities in the period they were closed, but Moore admitted an “intrinsic part” of their lives was lost for swimmers.

SASC are keen to link up with local business to ensure their continued survival.

“As a club we were better placed to return to swimming than after the first lockdown: best practices having already been established,” Moore told the News. “Nonetheless we’ve revisited and strengthened our controls and procedures in particular around the wearing of masks and social distancing within the leisure centres we use.

“Each lockdown we encounter takes away an intrinsic part of our swimmers’ lives. Some swim six times a week and losing that affects both their physical and mental wellbeing. As well as the exercise

element of swimming they also lose the social benefits of mixing with like-minded individuals with whom they’ve formed strong friendships.

“We try to keep everyone engaged through lockdowns by using social media to share virtual training sessions, quiz questions, jokes and gossip. This works but is not a complete replacement for the faceto-face social interaction and pool time that are so important to any swimming club.

“Lockdowns have hit our membership numbers and we need to grow the club in 2021 to generate the revenues we need to survive.

We have capacity to take on new members and are always happy to offer trials to interested parties. We are keen to develop relationships with local businesses and obtaining their support is also key to our survival.

“Sport and leisure are key to the wellbeing of everyone and we are pleased this has been recognised by the Government. Leisure centres are back open and servicing a multitude of sports for a huge range of age groups. This is fantastic.

“2020 has been exceptionally tough but Southwark Aquatics has survived and is keen to move forward and work with the local community to offer reasonably priced competitive swimming in a warm, friendly environment.”

Last month, England Boxing called on people to sign a #SaveOurSports petition which is asking for funding of £1.57billion to help grassroots sports clubs survive as Covid-19 restrictions have badly hit income streams.

Data from July 25 to October 11 showed that despite 45million visits to sports sites the coronavirus incidence rate was 0.99 per 100,000 visits.

England Boxing’s chief executive officer Gethin Jenkins said: “If proper funding can’t be obtained, then the implications for our clubs is dire. A majority of our clubs operate in some of the most marginalised areas of the country and have been hardest hit.

“Many are already providing access to facilities free of charge in order to allow boxers the chance to alleviate the physical and mental health impact this pandemic has caused. Whilst there was help initially, it was meant only as a stop-gap, and that was over seven months ago, so the money is running out.

“Without boxing clubs to provide support in their local communities, then the physical and mental health impact is going to be severe and will out-last the pandemic. Help is urgently needed.”

Pearson added: “Someone urgently needs to put some measures into place to get us competing again before there are no amateur boxers left as so many are turning over to the pros just so they can compete.”

The club was closed for the duration of the second lockdown.

The senior team were promoted at the end of last season as champions of Kent 1 and are working with new coach Andrew Evans as they prepare for the step-up to

the London leagues.

However, there are no league games currently scheduled due to so much time being lost with lockdowns. The club are hoping to compete in a local cup competition, with a February date slated and details to be confirmed.

The club is encouraging people to get involved. Training takes place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (6.30-8.30pm) at the club’s pitches in Burgess Park.

The junior team is looking to recruit boys and girls in all age groups from 4-16

with training taking place each Sunday (10am-12pm) at the same location.

A club spokesperson said: “Best of all it is totally free so come along and see if you enjoy it.

“We are always looking to welcome new players regardless of previous experience.”

By Lucas Ball in East Bergholt sport@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL LIONESSES manager Katie Whitmore was furious with her side’s display as they lost 4-1 to East Bergholt United in the Eastern Region Women’s Football League Division One South last Sunday.

The Lionesses travelled to Suffolk for their first game since lockdown ended, but put in a below-par display to allow the hosts to take their first three points of the season.

Shannan Drewe proved a bright spark for the Lionesses as she scored and hit the woodwork on a number of occasions, but there were few positives to be taken away from the game.

Whitmore said: “I’m very disappointed with the whole squad, to be honest. We put the work in and worked during lockdown in the sense of stuff off the pitch and our togetherness, doing Zoom calls and talking tactics to make sure we were ready to come back.

“But the girls didn’t show up.

Overall, very disappointed.

“We had Zoom calls twice a week when we should’ve been training so we’d already had that contact with the girls. For me, it was hard going into that lockdown but every team in this league was in the same boat as us.

“We can’t use lockdown as a reason for why the girls didn’t perform. The girls just didn’t show up and they need a massive wake-up call if they want to progress and work up the league. They need to wake up and

realise that a game of football is 90 minutes, not 20 or 25 minutes.

“You shouldn’t be waiting until the last 20 to wake up and go ‘girls, yeah, we really want this’. You should want it from the get-go and hopefully the girls have had that wake-up call today.”

The visitors had their own opportunities in the second half having been 3-1 down at the break and could have got back into the game.

But the manager was keen to stress there were very few, if any positives to take away as they were well beaten to fall to second, three points behind Hutton who have a game in hand.

Whitmore added: “No. We scored that goal and, for me, it still wasn’t good enough. Yes, we scored - but we conceded four, ultimately.

“Regardless of whether or not we create opportunities, it’s still not good enough for me, and the girls have to realise that. They need to now react and respond to that performance and the way we’re going to move forward.”

The Lionesses are away from home again this weekend as they take on Wodson Park, who could leapfrog Whitmore’s side in the table with a win.

Whitmore promised there would be changes for the game.

“I’ve said every week that I don’t like complacency. Sometimes you can see the complacency of some players out there and I’m always looking at ways that we can change that.

“The girls need to understand that when they come in to training next week they have to want to work and be part of this squad.”

The excitement surrounding the return of fans quickly dissipated after that moment, with Millwall releasing a statement on Sunday saying that they were “dismayed and saddened” by Saturday’s actions.

Other than that moment, it had been uplifting to hear the noise in the stadium again - and the raucous reception as Alex Pearce did his trademark clap when he led his teammates out to warm up.

But it can’t gloss over what happened immediately before kick-off.

In terms of the match itself, Millwall were disappointing once more in a home game. It was another poor display with a distinct lack of good chances created.

Derby, too, put in a less than impressive display but they extended the Lions’ poor record at home this season to one win in eight in the league before Tuesday night’s game against QPR. Derby’s players, surely low on confidence after no wins in their previous eleven games, still put in a resilient display defensively as they have done in each game since Wayne Rooney took interim charge, and the Lions could not break them down as they sat deep - another persistent issue for Gary Rowett’s side.

Curtis Davies and Matt Clarke proved a formidable pairing and meant that Millwall’s direct play - with their approach limited given their injury problems - to Matt Smith was rendered ineffective.

The Lions’ only real chance came after

12 minutes when an individual run from Jed Wallace saw him through on goal, but David Marshall swatted his effort away for a corner.

That was as strenuous as Marshall’s afternoon got, though, with Bart Bialkowski also experiencing a quiet day.

The Polish shot-stopper made just one save of note – but it led to the goal. After Bialkowski saved Martyn Waghorn’s header, Jason Knight fired home the rebound from close range.

It was uncharacteristic of Millwall’s defence to react slowly after the initial save, though Jake Cooper was starting just a week after dislocating his shoulder, and Mahlon Romeo also hasn’t played a lot of football recently.

However, his presence has at least given Wallace more freedom, but both need to offer more quality with their

end product often disappointing in recent matches given the positions they’ve found themselves in.

Millwall’s creative issues remain with their midfield as a whole unable to find defence-splitting passes. The Lions need to improve with fans having returned for now, at least – and quickly get their injured attackers back or the play-offs could soon be a distant dream.

Defender hopes to get through season before shoulder surgery EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk EVEN WHEN Jake Cooper dislocates his shoulder he does it right.

Cooper, 25, is known for his dedication, his work in the gym, the way he looks after himself off the pitch in every way to have the best chance of being ready on matchdays.

That’s why, along with his ability, he clocked up 136 consecutive league games over more than three years, not missing one second of Championship action.

That incredible run came to an end last Wednesday week after he dislocated his shoulder at Birmingham the previous Saturday.

But, remarkably, he was back in the side seven days after being in “a lot of pain” at St Andrew’s following a posterior dislocation of his right shoulder.

Posterior dislocations are caused by external impact to the front of the shoulder.

Millwall boss Gary Rowett has not yet had a full squad to choose from this season, and could ill-afford to be without one of his most consistent players longterm.

Cooper, though, tried to convince his manager that he could play four days later at Blackburn, despite still being in pain on the Monday and Tuesday after the

Birmingham game.

Former Reading defender Cooper knows there is a “high risk” of another dislocation and he will need surgery at some point, most likely next summer if he can get through this season without a setback.

He describes how he suffered the injury.

“It was a set-play at Birmingham and I’ve gone steaming into a group of bodies,” Cooper says. “I’ve gone in full pace and to break my run I’ve put my arm out into the group of players. My arm’s gone into them and jolted my shoulder right back. It came out the back of the socket.

“When Paul [Tanner], the physio, came on to the pitch I was in a lot of pain. He grabbed my arm and asked how it felt, he moved it and it went ‘pop’ and went back in.

“I was able to finish the game, though I couldn’t move my arm very well. I’ve got some treatment on it and I hope it holds up. I’m doing some strength work on it.

“The aim is to get to the end of the season. If you read up on the posterior dislocation there have not been many people who have had it under 60 that have not needed surgery.

“It will be worth it to get it all done when I can so it doesn’t cause me any more problems in the future. It’s not something I want to be worried about for the rest of my career.

“It’s one of those ones I’ve just got to get on with and hope for the best.

“

It’s going to be a long-term thing getting it sorted, but for the moment it’s all good “Obviously in [a sport like] rugby it’s a lot different. I’m not using my shoulder as much. There’s not a lot of force on it. I popped it out backwards, which is quite rare. You don’t see many.

“I’ve done quite a lot of research and it’s only about three per cent of dislocations that come out the back like mine did.

“It’s a rare one so there’s not a lot of information out there on it. But I’ve been able to keep the pain gone, basically, and that meant I could play.

“I’ve got a high risk of it dislocating again but it’s a risk I’m willing to take. Obviously the gaffer has spoken in the press about it.

The only thing that would cause it to redislocate would be if I were to fall funny or put pressure on it in a way that would make it come out the back again, which is a hard thing for someone to try to do to me.

“It feels pretty good actually. I got through the game Saturday fine. It wasn’t really on my mind, I got rid of most of the pain so that wasn’t really a factor. That was good.

“It’s going to be a long-term thing getting it sorted, but for the moment it’s all good.”

Cooper was set for game number 137 at Blackburn but his absence meant he has to be satisfied with being sixth on the all-time list of consecutive league appearances for Millwall.

“I was a bit gutted that I couldn’t persuade [Rowett] more to play me the Wednesday, after how I got through Saturday [against Derby] with no pain at all. I could have maybe played, though I was in a lot of pain Monday and Tuesday.

“Even doing normal actions like running was difficult for me. I didn’t want to go out there not being able to play my best. The advice that the medical staff got persuaded them that I needed to have a bit of a rest.

“Thankfully I was able to convince them before Saturday that I was fit enough to play. So that was a relief.

“If it had been a week, a Saturday to a Saturday game I would have been okay.

But my focus is purely on playing well and improving each week.

“Basing it on that and on my performances rather than how many games I’ve played is more important.”

Millwall travel to Middlesbrough this Saturday aiming for a first away win in

five games. They have only scored one goal in their last four games on the road, but have kept five clean sheets in eight matches away from home this season.

A recent tricky period has seen them drop out of the top six and into the bottom half of the table.

But Cooper is positive they can go on another good run.

“I don’t think you could say we’ve had a bad season yet,” Cooper insists. “There’s a long way to go. Yes, we’ve had a difficult period recently, but it’s strange because it happened quickly with how the games have come in a short space of time.

“We’re positive, we believe we can turn it around and we’ll be back on course getting things moving forward. We’ve just got to knuckle down and be difficult to beat in the way we know we’re good at.

“We believe in ourselves and the manager and that we can get the results to push us up the table.

“You’ve got to take your chances when you create them and stop goals the other end. If you get one or two of those things wrong it has an impact on your season.

We have to turn that around, take our chances and stop the poor goals we’ve given away.

“It will turn for us. Individually we all have to be better and show more quality.

“Our success over the last few years has been built on being hard to beat. We need to get those minor things right again.”

MILLWALL MAY have endured a ninth consecutive Championship game without tasting victory as they drew their London derby with Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday, but in the grander scheme of things it was generally a very positive night for the club.

Following last Saturday's events at The Den, the eyes of the footballing world were on the club and its fans, and boy did they deliver.

The message was loud and clear: 'United For Change'. Both sets of players linked arms and were loudly cheered and applauded by those inside The Den, so much so that you'd have been forgiven for thinking we're already back to full house rather than at the current reduced capacity of 2,000.

Some QPR players took the knee before kick-off – and again that was respected by the home supporters –

before referee Jarred Gillett blew his whistle, and finally the football became the most important focus of the night.

There were undoubtedly sighs of relief from everyone associated with the club after discussions on pre-match plans had lasted well into Monday night, before it was agreed players would unite behind an anti-discrimination banner and Millwall wouldn’t take the knee.

Lions boss Gary Rowett was pleased afterwards to be able to speak first about the football, even if it was to dissect yet another game without a win.

Despite Rowett opting for a slightly more cautious approach with a 5-3-2 formation, his side started quickly. Troy Parrott – making his fourth start in five matches – twice tested Seny Dieng in the Rangers goal. The eighteen-year-old is still waiting for his first goal in senior football, but the on-loan Tottenham forward is clearly growing in fitness and confidence with every game.

Williams, tried an ambitious effort from long range that flew narrowly wide with Dieng scrambling across his goal.

Rangers were dominating possession, but Dominic Ball's snide attempt at winning a cheap penalty was their only notable moment in what was a poor first-half – the Rangers midfielder deservedly booked for diving by Gillett midway through the opening period.

Millwall continued pushing hard for that opening goal, but Mason Bennett, on his return to the side after a fourmatch absence, failed to hit the target from 25 yards. The former Derby man was providing some much-needed energy that's occasionally been lacking for Rowett's men in recent weeks.

Nil-nil at half-time has become a familiar score for the Lions this term, so there wasn't any real need to hit the panic button just yet.

Mahlon Romeo after the final whistle But that would be as good as it got for Rowett's men, who desperately tried to get balls into the box for the likes of Smith, Bodvarsson and Tom Bradshaw to feed off, but like far too often in recent weeks, Millwall lacked quality in the final third, and were unable to register a meaningful attempt on target in the latter stages – with Smith's late header the closest they came.

There was another late run-out for exciting teenager Tyler Burey, who appears to have now moved above Jiri Skalak in the pecking order. That was a positive for Rowett, but since winning at Preston North End back in late October it's now just six points taken from a possible 27 available in the Championship.

The draw also ensured it was Millwall's longest winless run in the league since March 2015. It was tenth time lucky on that occasion – with the Lions ending their long wait by beating Charlton to give Neil Harris his first win in charge.

They’ll need to be at their best to do the same again, with a difficultlooking trip to in-form Middlesbrough on Saturday followed up by another long away journey to Bristol City three days later.

Millwall have dropped from fourth on October 28 into the bottom half.

They have plenty to do to reverse that momentum.

Rowett: ‘We will get our rewards’ MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett is confident his side can arrest their current slump.

The Lions have gone nine games without a win – but Rowett sees reason for optimism.

“If I look through our games, we have one really poor performance against Derby but again we have one really big moment in that game,” Rowett said.

“The last three or four home games we’ve had massive chances that we’ve not managed to take. Ultimately it’s that quality that wins you games.

“I think while we’re getting into those positions and we continue to do the right things and work hard as a team we’ll get our rewards.

“At the moment we’re not, but as we know the Championship is a long, long season. I saw Reading lose four games on the spin, but then they come out of it with a win and then they go from strength to strength. I’ve seen lots of other teams do that.

“We’re sat here saying we’ve only lost four games, but we’ve only won four games – that’s been the disappointment so far.”

into grounds as their side fell behind for the third game on the bounce.

The lively Ilias Chair collected the ball 25 yards out and took Bart Bialkowski by surprise – blasting an arrowed effort into the top lefthand corner, which left the Polish goalkeeper with little chance.

But while Bialkowski couldn’t do anything about the goal, he produced heroics to keep out Lyndon Dykes moments later, before making two outstanding saves to, first, smother Bright Osayi-Samuel's close-range effort, and then deny Chair from adding a second down to his left.

Less than three minutes later, the third of those stops became even more important as Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, part of an earlier triple change that also saw Ryan Leonard and Matt Smith introduced, levelled with his first goal since the final day of last season – ending his 20-match drought for club and country in 2020-21.

The quick-thinking Shaun Hutchinson released the speedy Jed Wallace, whose right-wing cross was only half-cleared as far as Bodvarsson, and he controlled well before lashing past Dieng courtesy of a kind deflection off Rangers' Osman KaKay with nineteen minutes remaining.

You would have fancied Millwall then to complete the turnaround and finally end their long wait for a Championship victory.

The last thing Gary Rowett and his players would want on a nine-game winless run is probably a long trip to the north-east to face one of the most stubborn sides in the league.

Before their game at Preston on Wednesday night (after we went to press) Neil Warnock’s side had only conceded more than one goal in just one of their sixteen league games this season.

The Teesiders had kept seven clean sheets and had the second-best defence in the division after Swansea. They beat the Lions 2-0 at The Den last season.

Millwall, meanwhile, have scored more than one goal in just three games out of seventeen.

Only an extreme optimist would plump for an away win.

“They’re a strong side, they’re a physical side, they know what they’re good at,” Rowett said. “Neil always puts teams out that are incredibly difficult to play against.

“And they’ve got forwards in the side that can win them games as they have proved.

They will be a tough nut to crack and it’s a difficult place to go.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for Neil because he’s done the business over a long period of time. He’s an intelligent guy, he knows what he wants and gets that passion from the players and fans.

“It will be a tough game but we go up there and relish taking on that challenge.”

Rowett feels Millwall have left points behind them this season. They have lost only four games – only the top four and Brentford have lost fewer – but have won just four with nine draws, the most in the division.

Rowett said: “I could probably pick one ridiculously good chance in every single game we’ve played. I can flip it around and say that we’ve not taken those chances – more than one chance on some occasions – and other teams have taken the chances

they’ve got “It’s a case of being clinical, trying to do the right things and believing that we’ll get our rewards for the hard work.

“Sometimes you get moments like this. I was reading that Arsenal are winless for a long period of time, and look at the players they’ve got.

“We believe in what we’re doing, we believe the results will turn for us. We want to try and work hard in this difficult spell we’re undoubtedly in.”

Rowett praised Jake Cooper, who has played twice since dislocating his shoulder at Birmingham.

“He’s shown that kind of commitment that everyone’s trying to show, to just get on with it with that Millwall spirit of trying to get through situations, stick your chest out and work your way through it with a bit of endeavour and grit,” Rowett said.

“Coops has done that.”

Millwall will come up against their former player George Saville. The midfielder had made 83 league appearances and scored seven league goals (before Wednesday) since joining for £8million in the summer of 2018.

Cooper said: “George is a great guy to have around the place. He put in some excellent performances [when Millwall finished eighth in 2017-18] and he deserved to get his move.

“He’s done well there and I’m sure it will be a tough battle against him this weekend.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL FOOTBALL Club and supporters were praised after their team and the players of Queens Park Rangers united in an anti-discrimination gesture before their London Derby at The Den on Tuesday night.

Players from both sides linked armin-arm behind a banner that read: Inequality (with a line through the ‘In’); United For Change.

As Mahlon Romeo stood front and centre beside club skipper Alex Pearce and team-mates and opponents, there was applause and cheers from the 2,000 Lions supporters in SE16.

The Kick It Out logo replaced club sponsor Huski Chocolate on the front of

Millwall’s shirts.

The home players didn’t take the knee before kick-off – Romeo stood with his right fist raised in the air – but QPR players did, again to applause from the home fans.

The taking the knee gesture was booed before kick-off against Derby last Saturday, leading to widespread condemnation.

Millwall sent an email to those supporters attending the game on Tuesday which read: “This is one of the most important days in Millwall’s history.

“The eyes of the world are on this football club tonight – your club – and they want us to fail.

“Together as one, we will not let that happen.”

revealed after the game that Romeo had been part of discussions at The Den until 6pm Monday evening with club hierarchy and organisations such as Kick It Out, the PFA and the EFL as prematch plans were agreed.

After the 1-1 draw, Romeo walked off the pitch with his jersey raised, to cheers from the fans.

Rowett said: “I’m proud of the fans and I’m proud of the club for the work they’ve done to at least try to make this a positive thing.

“A lot of the world was watching and I think the club have come out in a very positive way this evening and backed up the work they’ve been doing for years in the community. I’ve seen that first-hand.

“So I’m proud of people because there’s been a lot of flak flying around, a lot of mud slung at the club. Not

necessarily what happened Saturday but the actual club.

“Everyone associated with it tonight has at least the chance to feel proud of it.

“Mahlon spoke very intelligently, he spoke very passionately and he should come out with lots and lots of credit.

“To then go and perform in the way he did, it must have been difficult, but I thought he did really well.”

Meanwhile, on the pitch, Millwall came from behind to claim a point against Mark Warburton’s side, but it was a ninth league game without a win – the first time that has happened since the 2014-15 season.

Ilias Chair put his side ahead – and took the knee with Bright OsayiSamuel to celebrate – before Jon Dadi Bodvarsson equalised with his first goal of the season.

A large number of the Lions squad, including club skipper Alex Pearce and veteran Shaun Williams, see their deals expire at the end of the 2020-21 season, though some contracts contain various clauses on extensions.

Rowett hasn’t had a full squad available yet this season, with almost every player being injured at some point and Billy Mitchell and Kenneth Zohore out longer term.

Millwall have been preparing for January’s transfer market to try to boost their fading top-six hopes.

Rowett said he hasn’t made up his mind either on which players will be offered new deals.

“Not necessarily,” Rowett said. “We have an idea of the route we want to go down as a team. We need to be clear, we’ve been in a very, very difficult year for the club financially. We need to be clear where we see we’re coming out of that next year.

“That’s why we’ve delayed some of the decisions. It’s just a difficult scenario for everyone.

“In a normal year we might have made those decisions earlier. We’ve decided not to do that and as the season goes on we’ll pick those decisions up probably from January onwards.

“It would be fair for the players to know the decisions before everybody else and therefore I’ll keep those decisions in house.”
