By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The Green Party’s co-leader and mayoral candidate is petitioning for a dedicated emergency homeless shelter for the under 25s.

During questioning by Siân Berry at City Hall on November 19, Mayor Sadiq Khan admitted there was no specialist provision for teenagers and young people in London this winter.

Khan told the Green Party assembly member that funding for separate emergency hotel accommodation for the under 25s had been shelved due to a lack of funds.

“I’m raising the alarm today that a real crisis is coming for young people,” Berry said.

“We are already seeing an historic high of under-25s forced to live on the streets.

“The informal support struggling young people normally rely on from family and friends is much harder to find under coronavirus restrictions.

“I am hearing warnings from all over London, from homeless outreach workers and youth services supporting young people, that homelessness and rough sleeping is rising and getting worse.

“The mayor has admitted there is no dedicated space within his emergency accommodation programmes for young people, and this had to change.

“Following my questions today he has

now promised to investigate and l hope he will implement practical help, backed up with ring-fenced funding, before winter sets in and young people facing the brunt of this crisis are permanently harmed.”

In August we reported that just six people were believed to be sleeping on Southwark’s streets after a huge coordinated effort to protect homeless people from the virus.

Southwark Council, working with the Greater London Authority and partners including hotel chains and charities, had found emergency accommodation for 539 people, 420 of whom had been moved into longer-term housing.

But their efforts are now being scuppered by rising youth employment and the end of the evictions ban.

Between July and September, the number of young people sleeping rough were 47 per cent higher than during the same period last year.

More than one in ten rough sleepers are now under 25 - the highest proportion ever recorded.

The Dulwich and West Norwood MP called on the foreign secretary to support the ‘End SARS’ protests in solidarity with Nigerian campaigners and members of the diaspora in Southwark.

She has publicly supported the campaign to abolish and fully investigate the Nigerian Special Anti-Robbery Squad (known as SARS), after documented human rights abuses included torture, sexual violence and waterboarding.

Although the Nigerian government has said the unit will be disbanded, protests calling for wider reform and investigations into the unit’s actions have been violently repressed.

On October 20, a dozen peaceful activists were killed in Lagos.

Hayes said: “The recent violence in Nigeria and the repression of protestors is abhorrent and I know that many of my constituents are deeply worried about family and friends living in Nigeria.

“The UK has a moral duty to stand up

for human rights abroad and to work with international partners to oppose abuses. The UK government must do everything possible to help restore peace in Nigeria.”

In her letter to foreign secretary Dominic Raab, Hayes also described her concern over reports that UK funding had been used toward the training of implicated SARS officers.

Neil Coyle, a member of the House of Commons’ foreign affairs committee, has also called on the foreign secretary to take a stand, saying he has ‘watched with horror’ as events have unfolded in Lagos.

More than 220,000 people signed a petition calling on the UK government to impose sanctions on key figures within the Nigerian regime in response to the human rights abuses.

The government’s official response, given on November 11, said: “We were concerned by violence during recent protests and await the outcome of Nigerian investigations into reports of police brutality.

“We do not publicly speculate on future sanctions designations.”

However, the number of signatories meant the issue was motioned for debate in parliament, chaired by Theresa Villiers, where MPs blasted the government for channeling funds towards the SARS unit.

‘Vast majority’ of EU citizens in Southwark apply for settled status

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The majority of EU nationals living in Southwark are believed to have applied for leave to remain, according to figures shared at the council’s latest Brexit meeting.

Last year the local authority embarked on a communication campaign encouraging European citizens to apply for settled status, to ensure they can stay in the UK post-Brexit.

One key concern was that older people and those who are not as computer literate may struggle to complete the forms or be unaware they needed to do so.

The latest available data shows that 44,890 residents in Southwark have applied for the

EU settlement scheme. But the majority are working age; with only 650 of pensionable age.

The number of permanent EU citizens, and their ages, in the borough at any given time is a rough estimate. But, based on 2011 Census numbers, Southwark Council says there are expected to be around 41,000. If this is the case, despite population growth in the last decade the council hopes this means the ‘vast majority’ have successfully applied.

This is particularly reassuring given that due to COVID-19 and the difficulty of verifying documents in person, the settlement service has been suspended since March. According to the Home Office's latest statistics more than 4.2 million EU citizens have applied so far across the UK.

The London Underground lines have different cleaning routines, and according to data obtained by the News, seats are not shampooed on trains on six of the ten lines in service.

Seats on the Northern and Jubilee are not washed. Neither are those on the S7 or S8 trains, which serve the Hammersmith and City, District, Circle and Metropolitan lines.

A trial is ongoing to wash the fabric seat covers on the Piccadilly, while a train or two trains are washed a week on the Bakerloo, Victoria and Central lines.

The News did not ask for details involving the Waterloo and City line as it is currently not in service.

TfL says it has enhanced its cleaning process

during the coronavirus pandemic, including the use of a strong antibacterial spray.

Every three weeks, officials also do a deep clean with Covid anti-bacterial spray. The cleaning regimes reveal that officials have stepped up their cleaning of carriages since the pandemic began.

There are a variety of cleans, with different protocols, ranging from daily pre-service cleans, mini cleans and deep cleans.

Trains on different lines are given “deep cleans” ranging from every eighteen days to every 60 days. During those cleans, seats are hoovered and the interiors are cleaned.

TfL says it has enhanced its cleaning regime, including “wiping down all touch surfaces on buses, such as poles and doors with strong disinfectant every day.”

Officials are also “using long-lasting hospitalgrade cleaning substances that kill viruses and bacteria on contact.”

The News asked TfL for comment on tube seats being shampooed, but did not receive a response before going to press.

call for pride crossing

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Southwark councillor has called for the council to install a permanent pride crossing to honour the borough’s diverse LGBTQ community.

Cllr Victor Chamberlain, who represents Borough and Bankside ward, has called on the council to be the first in London to use a new ‘progress’ design for the pride crossing.

Designed in 2018, the design uses traditional Pride colours but also includes five black, brown, light blue, pink, and white chevrons to also symbolise people of colour, trans individuals, and those living with HIV/AIDS and those who have been lost.

“Southwark is home to some of the UK’s largest and most diverse LGBTQ+ communities,” said Cllr Chamberlain.

“Yet a recent LGBTQ+ study showed 58 % of respondents believe that there is no sense of

LGBTQ+ community in Southwark and over half don’t feel safe in our borough or that mainstream services were inclusive of LGBTQ+ clients.

“It’s now time the Council did something about this and very visibly showed solidarity with our diverse LGBTQ+ communities.

“These visible signs of equality are not tokenism. It is vital that we have visible, prominent and physical signs that our diverse LGBTQ+ citizens are integral to our community."

The new flag has been adopted by other institutions in London, including the Mayor’s office. Lambeth Council unveiled a traditional permanent pride crossing outside Brockwell Park last year.

In response to Cllr Chamberlain’s request, a council officer said: “We recognise that measures like rainbow crossings can make a big difference and so we’ve a workstream underway to investigate the various practicalities involved in installation.”

By court reporter news@southwarknews.co.uk In the opening of the trial into the murder of Rocky Djelal, stabbed to death two years ago beside a children’s playground in Southwark Park, the court was told his alleged killer disguised himself as a builder, intent on 'revenge' for the unsolved murder of his brother.

Stephen O'Rourke, 48, allegedly knifed 38-year-old Rocky Djelal to death in a 'savage' attack on Halloween in 2018.

O'Rourke blamed the victim for the killing of his brother Michael (also known as Paddy) O'Rourke, 21, in 2000, and grew increasingly paranoid that the culprit was after him next, it was said.

The Old Bailey heard that the pair had grown up together in Bermondsey and their families had known one another all their lives.

Mr Djelal was arrested but released without charge and no one was ever prosecuted over Michael's murder on 20 August 2000, the Old Bailey heard.

On the anniversary of Michael's funeral, the victim was chatting on the phone to his girlfriend near the park swings when he was ambushed from behind by O'Rourke, jurors heard.

The accused killer donned a high-vis jacket, paint-splashed trousers and labourer's boots to blend in with builders working near the park cafe and 'surprise' the victim, the court heard.

At around 1.58pm, he stabbed Mr Djelal twice, before plunging the blade 11cm into his back, causing his lung to collapse, it was said.

Witnesses initially thought they had heard a wild bird when the victim's screams echoed through the park during the 'clinically savage, pre-planned, execution-style killing,' prosecutors claim.

Prosecutor Allison Hunter, QC, told jurors the vicious killing was intended to 'wreak revenge' for his brother and save himself from the perceived ongoing threat.

Bearded O'Rourke appeared in the dock wearing glasses and a dark grey suit while the victim's family wept silently in the well of the court.

Ms Hunter said: “On Thursday 31 October 2018 shortly after 1.58pm Stephen O'Rourke, dressed in his Hi-Vis vest and beanie hat, stabbed and killed Rocky Djelal.

“As the sun was shining and children were playing on swings, Rocky Djelal was chatting on the telephone and looking on as he waited for his girlfriend Elle Carter to come back from her mother's and join him in the park.

“Stephen O'Rourke had spent the last hour and a half following Rocky Djelal almost in his very footsteps.

“When he located him, with the advantage of surprise, looking for all the world like one of the workmen working nearby... he calmly, coldly and deliberately

Rocky Djelal walked up to Rocky Djelal and stabbed him in what can only be described, the crown say, as a clinically savage, preplanned, execution-style killing.

“Witnesses describe hearing a shriek coming from nearby as if from a sort of wild bird, which is precisely what one thought he was hearing until he saw the arms of another person flailing on the ground.

“Stephen O'Rourke knew Rocky Djelal well. Not only had their families known each other all their lives and had lived near to each other when the children were all growing up, but eighteen years previously on 20 August 2000 Michael O'Rourke, brother to Stephen, Jason and Caroline O'Rourke was also murdered.

“Whilst Rocky Djelal was one of a number of people arrested for that murder, he was subsequently released without charge, and no one was ever prosecuted.

“It is clear however, that Stephen O'Rourke at least and his siblings continued to believe he was one of those responsible.”

Jurors heard O'Rourke enlisted his 34-year-old brother Jason, aka 'Biggie,' to assist in the killing and hide the bloodstained clothes after the execution.

The sibling was initially arrested alongside O'Rourke but killed himself while awaiting trial, the court heard.

Ms Hunter went on: “Messages recovered from Stephen O'Rourke's regular telephone after his arrest reveal that from late August 2018, he had been particularly preoccupied with his brother's murder and those that had killed him.

“He was convinced that his brother's killers were ‘messing with his head’ ...

And that they were now mocking and targeting him.

“His conviction that it was his brother's killers that were after him led him to try to re-establish contact with his other brother, Jason O'Rourke, with whom you

will hear he had not spoken for a number of years.

“Just four days before he murdered Rocky Djelal, Stephen O'Rourke and Jason O'Rourke aka “Biggie” had made contact with each other.

“Whether Jason O'Rourke gave to Stephen O'Rourke any encouragement or assistance in the actual commission of this murder is something only Stephen O'Rourke can tell us now; he certainly sprang to his assistance immediately afterwards.

“As the evidence will reveal, it was Jason O'Rourke who collected the no doubt bloodied clothes Stephen O'Rourke wore during the commission of the murder.”

The court was told O'Rourke allegedly selected a kitchen knife from a 'grisly collection' of weapons he hoarded in his bedroom and set out to execute the 'carefully planned' attack.

The accused knifeman scoped out a CCTV blind spot near the children's playground where he pounced on Mr Djelal in the 'military-style' killing, it was said.

The prosecutor said: “There were construction works taking place in the park right next to the café and children's playground where Rocky Djelal was murdered. Unsurprisingly workers on the site as part of their work attire, wore hivis jackets and vests.

“31 October was a significant date in the O'Rourke family calendar. It was the anniversary of Paddy O'Rourke's funeral.

“On this 31 October 2018, some eighteen years after Paddy had been killed, Stephen O'Rourke had dressed himself as a labourer: in boots, dark paintsplashed trousers, a hoodie and a high-vis jacket when he set off in search of his prey.

“No doubt say the crown that he intended his attire to be something of a disguise, not least to Rocky Djelal, allowing him to pass himself off as a labourer in whom no-one would be interested as he carried out his deliberate and carefully

planned attack.

“So carefully and thoroughly had he planned for his actions that morning, that he took with him a change of clothing.

“He also took with him a knife, no doubt, say the crown, from the grisly collection he kept in his bedroom.

“Stephen O'Rourke had packed his murder kit in two Tesco carrier bags for life that he can be seen carrying on recovered CCTV footage from his route, as he strode purposefully through the streets of Bermondsey from his home address in Grosvenor Park towards and around Southwark Park.

“Minutes before the murder, Stephen O'Rourke left the park through the Gomm Road gate, but CCTV shows him to quite literally turn on his heel and retrace his steps through the same entrance of the park through which he had left, from where he walks purposefully and directly to where we now know Rocky Djelal to have been standing on a little stretch of pathway just out of sight of the camera. “[After] O'Rourke disappears out of the view of the camera, Rocky Djelal can be seen stumbling back into view on the other side of the stretch of pathway… by which time he had been fatally stabbed.

“He can be seen running, then stumbling and collapsing over the fence into the children's play area.”

The prosecutor said Mr Djelal had fought for his life by raising his hands defensively, but “so deeply does the knife go in that it chips a notch out of the bone of his left forearm.”

Emergency services including a helicopter arrived at the scene and battled to save the victim's life, but despite their best efforts he was pronounced dead at 2.30pm.

As police arrived, witness Tom Walker who was walking nearby saw Mr Djelal's heartbroken father running towards his son's body calling out: “Where's my boy?,” it was said.

As the News has reported, Corbyn - a well known housing and squatting activist in Southwark - has attended a number of anti-lockdown protests.

Alongside claiming the restrictions are an attack on civil liberties, and that the COVID-19 virus is vastly overstated, he has also criticised mass vaccination plans and is a 5G conspiracy theorist.

Currently mid-trial at Westminster Magistrates’ Court over previous lockdown breaches, Corbyn appeared in the dock on Friday, November 27. At the time of going to press, the case was expected to continue. He turned his court

The accused killer messaged his girlfriend about the perceived threats, dubbing them 'plastic gangster c**ts' who he would 'f**k up the next chance he gets,' jurors were told.

Stacey Browne described her lover as 'running around like Rambo' after the flurry of paranoid texts on 27 October just four days before the alleged murder, the court heard.

Ms Hunter added: “It is clear, say the Crown, that Stephen O'Rourke had sought the assistance of his brother to help him wreak revenge upon the person he believed was their brother's killer, and remove the threat he had going on in his head about being targeted by his brother’s killers from all those years ago.”

The prosecutor told jurors it has been suggested that O'Rourke would claim he acted in 'self-defence.'

O'Rourke, of Grosvenor Park, Kennington, denies murder.

The trial continues.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey community centre which has been praised by royals and prime ministers is set to close after the council pulled its funding and its lease ended.

The Beormund Community Centre on Abbey Street has seen thousands of people a year come through its doors since it was opened more than three decades ago.

But council officials say the centre is poor value for money and pulled its funding, setting the stage for Beormund to close this month.

The assessment has sparked a bitter row between the centre and council, with manager Coral Newell saying: “They’re nasty little people.”

“It’s very sad to be honest,” she said.

“We think they want this building for flats.” This was denied by the council.

Over the years, the Beormund has seen visits from Princess Diana and Gordon Brown, has won awards for its provision of community services, and will be familiar to many SE16 pensioners as a driving force behind the Christmas Day party at Guy’s Hospital since 1976.

But during lockdown, council bosses said visitor numbers at the centre have been “dwindling,” and that the centre had made no effort to provide community services throughout coronavirus.

They decided to pull their remaining funding in the centre, worth £50,000 a year.

But Ms Newell said: “Dwindling? We had 28,000 visitors last year. Obviously with Covid over the last ten months, that’s caused us a lot of problems.

“And we didn’t have anyone in the centre because we weren’t allowed

to.” Council officials say the centre owes them rent, but the centre says the council’s annual grant was paying the rent.

Now defiant Coral has pledged not

to hand over any remaining funds after redundancies have been paid back to the council.

“We’re going to close in December, but we’re not going to give the money

back to Southwark Council,” said Coral. “It’s our money. We’re going to give to charities and maybe sheltered accommodation. We don’t owe the council anything.”

An additional complication is the centre’s lease, which is also lapsing, meaning the centre cannot carry on in the building with additional funding from elsewhere.

And to add to the centre’s troubles, in September, two squatters broke into the building.

“When I came in, I could have cried,” she said. “There were two of them, police caught them. They broke in through an upstairs window, they took everything.”

The row has left the centre management with a bitter taste in their mouths.

“The things that have been done to make sure people have a place to be able to come to,” said Coral. “A group of people came together to get a community hall in Southwark, it came from the people who live on the estates here.

“And we were able to get out to the people because we could fund groups to come in.”

Cllr Alice Macdonald, of Southwark Council, said: “It is disappointing that the grant for the Beormund Centre has had to end after trying to see what could be done after a number of issues arose.

“I am sorry that the centre’s management feel it’s an unfair decision but as a council we have to ensure every penny we spend is delivering value for our communities.

“There are no plans to build flats on the site and whilst all options are being considered nothing will be decided without consulting with residents.”

Ofsted inspection praises council’s work in lockdown

Inspectors scrutinised the service in September and October, with a report published this month.

While some improvements have been identified, inspectors have paid tribute to staff working to keep children safe during the Covid outbreak.

“Senior managers and staff have ensured that children and young people continue to be safeguarded,” said her Majesty’s inspector, Brenda McInerney.

“The best possible decisions are being made about children’s care and education, despite the disruption and impact of the pandemic.”

She added: “An alliance of schools, public health, family centres, social care, police, health visitors and community organisations worked closely together to provide a safety net for vulnerable children in need of services and targeted support to attend school.”

Inspectors also praised the work of schools, saying there were “many examples” of schools going the extra mile to support students.

Section 60 imposed after stabbing in SE17

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A section 60 was in place across large parts of Camberwell and Peckham on Saturday night after a stabbing in Walworth.

The male victim, aged 20, was found in Sutherland Square with a single stab wound to his armpit just before 9.30pm on November 28.

It is believed he was attacked near the junction with Sutherland Walk and Walworth Road.

After being hospitalised his injuries were confirmed as being neither lifethreatening nor life-changing.

Inspector Simon Blondell said a Section 60, and extra patrols from the Met’s Territorial Support Group, were in response to ‘suspected ongoing tensions’ from this attack.

The Section 60 covered parts of Southwark north of the A202: Camberwell New Road, Peckham Road, Peckham High Street and Queens Road.

It was in place until 7am on Sunday 29, November.

No arrests have been made at this stage and, so far, no information about any suspects has been released.

Teenager stabbed in Dulwich’s Kingswood Estate

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A 17-year-old was stabbed in Dulwich’s Kingswood Estate last Sunday.

Paramedics and police were called at around 3.10pm on November 29.

The victim was found with two stab wounds and is currently being treated in a hospital in south London. His injuries are not believed to be lifechanging.

He and his family are also being offered specialist support.

Neighbourhood police are carrying out extra patrols in the area. As yet there is no further information about the attack or possible suspects.

Leisure centres have re-opened identified, including “the quality of social work practice with disabled children,” and “the timeliness and quality of planning for older children at high risk in the community.”

However, inspectors said the council had plans in place to address those issues. Cllr Jasmine Ali, (pictured) the council’s children’s and schools’ boss, said the findings showed the resilience of staff, children and teachers.

“2020 has been extraordinary in so many ways, but it’s been especially tough on children, teachers, parents

and young people,” she said.

“They have all shown exceptional resilience and determination to continue with education during such tough times.

“They have been at the forefront of my mind throughout this crisis, but I am proud we have done our very best for them. This has been proven in the recent positive assessment of our response to the pandemic from Ofsted.”

The council’s youth offending team have also been praised by inspectors

as examples of national best practice.

HM Inspector Yvonne McGuckian of the Inspectorate of Probation, praised how staff had phoned a youngster serving time in a young offenders’ institution weekly.

The youngster told inspectors: “The YOT, even if it is not your worker, they treat you like family, do things with you not at you. This helps me.”

Cllr Ali added: “There is of course more work to do – however the inspection reports reflect that we are moving in the right direction.”

Paramedics say low traffic roadblocks delayed them

Because sat navs didn’t recognise the new closures

Paramedics say they have been delayed on 999 calls to patients in life-threatening conditions because their sat navs have not recognised new ‘low traffic’ roadblocks.

Medics complained of delays getting to at least two people having lifethreatening fits in Southwark.

One of the roadblocks singled out for causing delays to emergency calls is on Cook's Road, SE17, according to reports written by paramedics for an NHS database logging patient safety incidents.

In one call on August 19, a paramedic crew was asked to respond to a category

one emergency - for the most serious life-threatening injuries - for a fitting patient in nearby Olney Road.

A planter blocked the way on Cook's Road, approximately 200 yards before the turn to arrive on-scene.

Crews turned around but then hit another barrier in Chapter Road, “where another planter box in the middle of the road prevented any vehicles from passing through.”

This forced paramedics to take a longer route, taking roughly seven minutes extra.

On September 23 another crew who were again called to a fitting patient in a life-threatening condition but were stopped by planter boxes on Cook's Road.

“This significantly delayed our response to the CAT 1, and we were delayed by approx.5 mins,” they say.

Another incident on August 30 reports a delay of ten minutes to a category two call for an emergency in Otto Road because of sat navs not recognising the roadblocks.

“With sat nav unaware of new closures it could not reroute us,” states the report.

“Our response time to a CAT 2 call was significantly hindered as a result.”

A further delay was reported by a different crew of up to eight minutes on a call because of the “brand new flowerpot road blockage” on the 12th September at roadblocks in SE17.

In another incident, paramedics complained of a delay on a 999 call because of council roadblocks in East Dulwich Road and Carlton Avenue.

Cllr Catherine Rose, the council’s transport boss, said Southwark was working with the emergency services to make sure they could get to patients.

“We’ve converted a number of permeable road closures to camera operated controls, at the request of the Emergency Services,” she said on Friday.

“Cooks Road is among these – we introduced a camera system there, back in October.

“The Ambulance Service raised

Chapter Road in a meeting with us yesterday, so we are investigating options here currently as well.”

Internally the ambulance service says it has seen “multiple no/low harm incidents reported and an increase to on scene to hospital times,” as a side-effect of traffic calming measures across the capital.

The service’s chief operating officer Khadir Meer wrote to local authorities earlier this year to express his concern, and the ambulance service is consistently opposing physical barriers like planters on the grounds they could delay ambulances.

However, academics last week published a paper which appeared to show that LTNs do not cause delays to the emergency services.

Researchers analysed the response times of firefighters in Waltham Forest, which has had LTNs since 2015.

Academics found that while delays had not actually increased, a greater proportion of delays were being blamed on LTNs rather than less visible causes

such as congested roads.

“These findings demonstrate that traffic calming measures can initially be identified as delaying some trips without any overall effect on response time performance,” states the paper.

Asked for comment, the London Ambulance Service repeated a statement it gave this paper in September.

The statement says they have the “potential” to delay life-saving calls, and that the service is lobbying to make sure that is considered.

"That is why we continue to work with Transport for London (TfL) and local authorities, including Southwark, to ensure emergency vehicle access is properly considered, and the impact of any changes monitored," said an LAS spokesperson.

A number of factors affect response times such as congestion, weather, and ambulance staffing levels meaning it can be hard to tell whether Low Traffic Neighbourhoods are causing delays or if any delays are being caused by another factor.

Incident reports show sat nav problems cause paramedics to go to wrong streets and hospitals

The reports were obtained by the News under Freedom of Information laws by asking for incident reports which mention words relating to sat navs.

Shockingly they also reveal in February one patient appears to have died of a heart attack after paramedics were sent to the wrong road because their sat nav misdirected them.

When they realised they were in the wrong place they called for backup - which was then delayed because they too were sent to the wrong location by sat nav.

“It is not suggested that the delay was wholly responsible for the outcome however the minutes wasted may have enabled the crew to be making better progress towards hospital as it was clear that the patient was very unwell,” the report states.

Sat nav problems also caused one patient having a heart attack to be taken to St Thomas’ Hospital when both St George’s in Tooting and King’s College Hospital were much closer.

And in yet another case, a father of a patient coughing up blood was forced to run off "looking for ambulance and even jumped in car

to look for ambulance," after sat nav errors.

A spokesperson for the Ambulance Service said ultimately the responsibility for sat nav issues was with those who owned the software.

“We encourage our crews to report any road access or navigation issues so that we can share this information with the rest of our crews and follow it up with relevant London agencies and authorities,” said the spokesperson.

“However, responsibility for updating London-wide maps and sat nav systems lies with the satellite navigation software owners.”

A final review of the project will be held in June

Southwark Council’s roads boss has admitted that by implementing a ‘patchwork’ of low traffic and low emissions schemes across the borough her department has ‘not done everything right’, and has vowed that her team is now working on trying to ‘bring everything together in a more coherent way’.

A final review of the project, including a decision on whether to keep or scrap the ‘low emissions neighbourhood’, will be held in June next year, with amendments set to be made early in 2021 based on public feedback.

Councillor Catherine Rose, who holds the leisure, environment and roads portfolio at Tooley Street, was speaking at a public meeting last Friday afternoon where she heard from residents and business owners for and against the road changes in East Dulwich; including the closure of Melbourne Grove to through traffic.

More than 70 attended the meeting, along with other local councillors and officers. Cllr Rose said they were now ‘restoring balance’; citing key

improvements already in place such as introducing bollards which can allow for waste collectors to enter, rather than 'hard' infrastructure like planters.

But although the lively meeting saw dozens of questions put to the councillors about the baseline data being used to monitor air pollution and potential amendments to the current layouts, very few concrete details were forthcoming.

Those in favour of the current schemes included Helen Pickering who, while asking about how data was being collected to measure its success, described the impact on her street as ‘transformational’.

Another supporter, Emily Farrington, said: “Twenty, thirty, forty years ago, if we knew the huge cost of car use then, there would have been a huge backlash,” while resident Stephen Edwards said his own family had completely stopped using the car for the school run and trips to local shops and restaurants, saving “hundreds and hundreds” of unnecessary miles of driving something he says was previously ‘impossible’ on Melbourne Grove due to it being “incredibly dangerous”.

Those unequivocally against included Tracy Brook, who wrote in the group discussion: “The negative impact on the local businesses who have lost customers, plus the inconvenience to drivers who now are backed-up and then speeding up and down East Dulwich Grove more than outweigh any small safety improvements.”

But there is also a middle ground of

those broadly in favour of the scheme’s aims but who take issue with its implementation and evaluation.

Key revisions that traders including Lianne Ludlow, from Fashion Conscious in Melbourne Grove, have suggested include one way systems to help keep traffic moving rather than idling, and more connected cycle paths to create longer routes, rather than piecemeal areas. None of these have received a formal response from Tooley Street, though presumably are being considered as part of possible amendments in the new year.

One director of EDG Nursery told the group idling had increased outside since the measures had been put in place.

“My main concern obviously is the displacement of traffic. There’s a lot of people working from home so your measurements may be off track,” he said.

“I am pleased with the work you’re doing and your efforts of what you’re trying to achieve. Our concern is that we have to protect the health of our children. There has been without a doubt an increase of traffic on East Dulwich Grove, Lordship Lane is much more congested as well."

Goose Green councillor James McAsh told attendees that the council was listening. “I think Goose Green is in a bit of a tricky spot here and I think we need to recognise that these schemes clearly have positives and they clearly have negatives,” he said.

What does tier 2 mean for pubs in southwark?

Confusion reigns over substantial meal criteria

Staff at Southwark boozers have told the News that the term is a “massive grey area”.

As this paper went to press, government ministers themselves appeared to be confused about what counted as a meal - with the humble scotch egg being nominated as a contender for a substantial meal.

One SE1 pub, the Waterloo Tap in Sutton Walk, pivoted to serving pizzas with its pints in a bid to avoid having to shut under the new restrictions.

Its general manager, Michaela, told the News she struck up a deal with a nearby pizza joint several months ago for this eventuality, as the premise does not have a kitchen.

“It’s going to be difficult,” she said.

“Right now we’re making less revenue, we don’t have as much money to pay staff but with table service and food means more work.

“There’s no real rules about what counts as a substantial meal,” she said.

“Because they say you should already know what a substantial meal is they’re leaving it up to common sense.”

The 10pm curfew has been junked under the new rules, with pubs instead being told to ring last orders at ten and

ordering everyone to leave at eleven.

“I don’t think people will leave much earlier than eleven,” she said. “We get a lot of people coming by in the last hour trying to get one in before going home.”

For the traditional Whelan’s pub in Rotherhithe, the new rules means it now has to serve food to stay open - but it admits the food may be out of a tin.

Among the menu options is an instant cuppa soup for a starter, tinned curry for main and shop-bought ice-cream for pudding.

“They’re all microwaveable or come in tins,” said landlord, Ciaran Canavan.

He told the News he thought the new rules on eating a substantial meal didn’t make sense.

“So does it mean someone who’s coughing and spluttering won’t infect someone because they’re eating?” he asked. “The government are turning so many people against them because of the stupid things they’re saying.”

He is also worried about the impact the move will have on customers saying some of his regulars come to the pub for their social life.

“I’ve got four guys at Whelan’s who’ve got cancer,” he said. “The only thing they do socially is come in here. They can’t afford to come for a sit down meal everyday.”

The guidelines state a substantial meal is “a full breakfast, main lunchtime or evening meal.”

Traditional Southwark boozers have slammed the government’s payment of £1,000 as too little, too late.

Ciaran Canavan landlord of Whelan’s Mayflower, is used to serving food as the venue did meals anyway.

But his businesses - which include Leadbelly’s Bar and Kitchen - have rolled out more starters as part of its offerings including a scotch egg.

“But it comes with a salad,” he said. “I used to live in New Zealand, and in New Zealand on Sundays you had to offer a substantial meal.

“No-one could ever work out what it meant, it was a big bone of contention.

I think that’s what’s going to happen here, there’s so much confusion.”

Under the new rules since Wednesday, pubs are only allowed to serve alcohol with a “substantial meal.”

But many traditional Southwark boozers do not have kitchens or don’t ordinarily serve food.

For those pubs which are still forced to close, the government has offered a one-off payment of £1,000.

“It’s better than nothing, but it’s not good enough. It’s not even going to cover a week’s costs” said Sandra Smith, the landlady of Bermondsey’s Ancient Foresters.

“It’s not touching anything we have lost.”

While most other premises are now open including all shops - these pubs have no clear idea of when they can reopen.

“It’s disgusting,” she added. “We have lost thousands and thousands. A lot of people just won’t open up again.

“All the shops are open 24 hours, so why can’t we? Everything is cleaned in a pub, you get a clean glass, everyone wears masks.

“But if you go to a supermarket, everyone’s not wearing a mask, and they’re touching everything. But they’re saying pubs are the ones causing it?”

While some ‘wet’ pubs have attempted to branch out into food to stay open under Tier Two rules, this is not an option for the Ancient Foresters. “Our brewery won’t supply us beer because we don’t have a kitchen,” Sandra said.

Some see surge in bookings A historic Rotherhithe boozer says it saw a surge in punters making bookings as the government announced its tier two rules last week.

The Black Dog Pub Company owns and runs the Mayflower, alongside Leadbelly’s Bar in Canada Water and the Prince of Wales pub in Kennington.

Its owner, Paul Graham, told the News staff saw a stampede of customers eager to get back into their locals since the new rules were announced.

“We had 750 bookings in just the first few hours when they said that London was going to be in tier two,” he said.

The venue was quickly fully booked for Christmas, too.

allowed to socialise with people from outside your household or bubble in any indoor place, whether in public or private.

You are allowed to socialise in groups of up to six outdoors, following the so-called ‘rule of six’. It applies to outdoor spaces like parks and gardens.

CAN I GO TO THE PUB? Yes, but pubs not serving food are remaining closed. Pubs can only serve alcohol with “substantial meals”.

The 10pm curfew has been changed to a rule that hospitality venues must close at 11pm, with last orders at 10pm.

It will be table service only for orders as

before, so no jostling at the bar.

ARE SHOPS OPEN? All ‘non-essential’ shops are allowed to open under the Tier Two rules.

Hairdressers, barbers and gyms are also allowed to be open if ‘COVID-secure.’

CAN I GO TO CHURCH? Places of worship remain open but you must not socialise with people from outside of your household or support bubble while you are indoors there.

Instead, the landlord is branching out into food in a bid to stay open, as it is the only way his business can stay afloat.

A combination of difficulties caused by lockdown and road closures forced him to shut up shop there permanently, he said.

Now he says he is being chased for rent money by the owner of the building. “They’re asking for six months’ rent,” he said. “But there’s no way I can pay them the money they’re asking for.

“So it’s a case of going to court and letting a judge decide.”

It comes after Boris Johnson told MPs the government was doing everything it could to support hospitality.

“We will do everything in our power to support our hospitality sector throughout this crisis,” he told MPs on Tuesday.

“Today we're going further with a one-off payment of £1,000, in December, to wet pubs - that's pubs that do not serve food."

Bermondsey primary school forced to close amid coronavirus outbreak

Riverside Primary on Janeway Street revealed the news in an “urgent” message to parents posted on its website on Sunday.

City of London Police said the 27-year-old jumped off the bridge into the Thames as “part of an online video” shortly before noon yesterday.

He did not suffer any injuries.

Witnesses said two heroes jumped into the river to rescue the man.

“The man jumped into the river as part of an online video. He managed to safely get out of the river and didn’t suffer any injuries,” said police.

“The force has opened an investigation and are currently looking into the incident.”

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk More than 100 patients were discharged from Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals into care homes without anyone knowing if they had coronavirus during the first wave of the pandemic, the News can reveal.

Until April 16, it was national policy that only those displaying symptoms of Covid were tested before being discharged into a care home.

It means patients without symptoms may have carried coronavirus into homes with vulnerable residents without knowing it.

According to data obtained by this paper, between March 1 and April 15, Guy’s and St Thomas’ discharged 103 patients into care homes without testing them for coronavirus.

Now all patients are tested for Covid before being discharged into a home, after a high death toll at care homes during the first wave.

The News has already reported that hundreds of patients were discharged from hospitals run by King’s College NHS Trust, and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.

A spokesperson for Guy’s and St Thomas’ said it followed national policy at all times.

“We have always followed national guidance on testing patients for coronavirus and in accordance with this, earlier this year we tested patients on

admission and those showing COVID-19 symptoms,” said a spokesperson.

“In line with current NHS guidance, patients are now tested for coronavirus 48 hours before they are discharged to care homes.”

The data shows that two patients tested positive prior to being discharged into a home.

The News asked whether Guy’s and St Thomas’ could guarantee nobody was discharged into a care home while doctors knew they were infectious with a positive coronavirus test. The Trust repeated it followed national guidance at all times.

There was a rush to clear beds across the NHS estate in the first wave, including in south London hospitals, officials at the south east London clinical commissioning group have previously told this paper.

Care home staff may have also carried the virus into homes asymptotically too, because there was a lack of tests to check whether those without symptoms had coronavirus.

At King’s College NHS Trust, 111 patients were put into care homes without anyone knowing if they had coronavirus during that time period, the News revealed earlier this month.

At Lewisham and Greenwich, the figure stands at 130. In total, 344 people were put into care homes without a Covid test in those six weeks from the three hospital trusts.

Now anyone being discharged into a Southwark care home gets tested.

Residents in homes get tested every 28 days automatically, and care home staff are tested weekly.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Frontline responders were at Denmark Hill for nearly three hours helping a man who was ‘threatening to jump’ from a rooftop at King’s College Hospital last week.

Officers were called to Camberwell just after 3pm on Thursday, November 26 after reports a man had scaled a roof and could be in imminent danger.

The road was cordoned off while police, London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service teams tried to talk the man down. A police helicopter also provided assistance.

Fortunately, he was brought to safety by 6pm and the hospital was able to remain open to patients throughout.

Rogue landlord ordered to hand over £280,000

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A rogue landlord who illegally rented crammed and unsafe flats in Old Kent Road has appeared in court after an investigation by housing officers and trading standards.

Shafair Ali, from Deptford, was ordered to pay over £280,000 in fines and costs at Inner London Crown Court this month after enforcement action by Southwark Council.

The 51-year-old had pleaded guilty to two offences of failure to comply with a planning notice in 2018 after converting, without permission, numbers 719-725 Old Kent Road into five ‘cramped’ flats.

On November 10, the court ordered Ali to hand over £259,475 of rental income as proceeds of crime, along with costs of £23,400.59.

Failure to comply within three months would see him face two and a half years in prison.

Council officers discovered the five flats had been constructed, with no planning permission, in a building designated for office or light industrial use.

Southwark Council described them as ‘poorly constructed’, with ‘inferior layouts and materials’.

Police appeal after woman ‘sexually assaulted on tube’

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Detectives have launched an appeal after a woman was sexually assaulted on a Northern line tube travelling from Elephant and Castle.

Officers have released this CCTV image of a man they believe can help with their investigation.

The victim was sat on the tube as it travelled from Elephant and Castle to Balham at around 6am on Monday, August 3.

Police say a man approached her without warning, sat down and sexually assaulted her.

He then allegedly pulled drugs

from his pocket and offered them to the victim, before asking her to get off the train with him to take the drugs. He also stated he had a knife.

Both the victim and the perpetrator left the train at Balham station separately.

But the victim noticed the man on the other side of the road of a nearby street, so went back to the station for safety and didn’t see him again.

Police ask anyone who recognises this man to contact BTP to help them with the investigation by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 2000051915.

A Rotherhithe mum has launched an appeal to find the Good Samaritan who saved her boy from being mugged for his bike.

A quick thinking stranger saved Tanya Robinson’s son from being mugged by youths for his bike outside the Decathlon store in Canada Water.

Her twelve-year-old boy, whom the News is not naming, was stopped by youths, who attempted to snatch his bike.

Spotting a woman sitting on a bench nearby, the youngster claimed the stranger was his mum to deter the criminals – and the unknown woman intervened, snatching the bike back.

Now his real mother wants to find her to give her a box of chocolates or flowers as thanks for actions.

“The woman was savvy enough, she said, ‘Yes I am his mum,” Tanya told the News. “That was enough to deter them a bit.

“They’d taken some bits off the bike and she grabbed hold of it and they let go. She was able to get it back for my son.

“I just want to say ‘thank you’ to her, get her some chocolates and some flowers. If it had not been for her, it could have been a whole lot worse.”

Once Tanya’s young son had his bike back, he sped off to Surrey Quays Shopping Centre to find a phone to call his mum, she said.

He was chased by the would-be muggers, but managed to get into Superdrug – where kindhearted staff gave him a drink, a place to sit and a phone to call his mother.

“The manager called me from his own personal mobile, they said, ‘He’s safe, don’t worry’”, Tanya said.

The mystery woman is described as an older woman, with slightly tanned skin and black hair.

She had a small brown dog with her and was sitting on a bench outside the Decathlon when the incident happened at around half twelve to half one on Sunday, November 22.

“I have asked on Facebook, but nobody seems to know who she is,” said Tanya.

“But she must be local.”

In an inspection in 2017, it was discovered that one flat was just 35 square metres in size - two metres below the minimum size for a one person home - but had three bedrooms crammed inside including one with no windows. At least eight people were believed to be living in the property.

The flats also had serious safety problems, with no fire detection, inadequate escape routes some of which were via kitchens, electrical sockets in bathrooms, some bedrooms without heating and bathrooms with no ventilation.

Cllr Johnson Situ, cabinet member for climate emergency, planning and transport said: “We believe that everyone deserves a place that they’re proud to call home, so it’s deeply shocking that families were cramped into properties not even big enough for one or two people.

“This is a great result and another success for our Planning and Trading Standards teams, whose joint efforts have amounted to nearly £1.5 million in confiscation orders issued to landlords renting out illegally converted properties in Southwark since 2019.

“The council remains committed to taking tough action against criminal landlords who would profit from the misery of their tenants by renting illegal and sub-standard properties.”

Woman charged with Elephant & Castle murder

A 31-year-old woman appeared in court last week charged with the murder of Richard Obi on the Elephant and Castle’s Rockingham Estate, writes Josh Salisbury...

Suvenca Martis of Panmure Court, Sydenham, appeared in custody at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on November 27 charged with the murder of the 25-year-old.

Richard was found suffering stab injuries at the estate’s Bramwell House on Tuesday, November 17. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are continuing to investigate the murder.

Attempted murder charge in Herne Hill A 25-year-old from Peckham has been charged with attempted murder after a non-fatal shooting in Herne Hill in September, writes Katherine Johnston...

Danny Harle, from Gandolfi Street, was charged on Tuesday, November 24, after a series of raids by police across south London.

He appeared at Bromley Magistrates’ Court this week. He is also facing charges of firearm possession with intent to endanger life and supplying class B controlled drugs.

Two other men, a 29-year-old and 20-year-old, were arrested at a home in Denmark Hill Estate in relation to the same shooting.

They were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and have now been released under investigation.

LIFE AFTER ROBOTIC SURGERY A WOMAN diagnosed with a rare condition says her life has been transformed after undergoing robotic surgery at Guy’s and St Thomas’.

Anisah Osman Britton, 27, was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, which causes muscle weakness. Within weeks the disease had affected her vision, caused breathlessness and extreme tiredness.

Myasthenia gravis occurs when the immune system damages the junction between nerves and muscles, preventing messages from the nerve endings reaching the muscles, in turn making muscles weak and tired. Some people with the condition have an abnormally large thymus gland.

Anisah found her diagnosis particularly hard to accept because her mother Naazneen also has it. As a result Naazneen needed a massive operation to remove her thymus gland, and has suffered from other illnesses since.

Anisah, who was named in Forbes magazine’s 30 under 30 list, said: “I thought I was invincible – I was young and running my own company. It took the wind out of my sails and as a result I became very depressed and suffered from panic attacks.”

Anisah was referred to Guy’s and St Thomas’ where she was treated with medication which helps signals travel

between muscles and nerves, improving her symptoms. Tests also found that her thymus was enlarged and had a benign tumour on it, so it needed to be removed.

She was told this could hopefully be done using robotic surgery which would involve much smaller incisions and a faster recovery time.

She said: “I was so relieved when I woke up and was told the surgery had been done robotically. It was an incredible experience.”

The team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ has performed this robotic operation for about three years, treating around 20 patients each year.

Mr Routledge, consultant thoracic surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “We are now able to perform this operation robotically with just three small incisions. This benefits patients greatly as it involves a faster recovery and shorter hospital stay.”

Anisah recently took part in the virtual London Marathon to raise money for Guy’s and St Thomas’. She said: “I just want to give back in some way. I can’t explain how amazing my care has been.”

TOWIE star to give out presents Southwark Angels

A Bermondsey mum is to team up with a star from The Only Way is Essex to give out Christmas presents to children at Great Ormond Street.

Rhianna Stonely is teaming up with her childhood friend Ella Rae Wise from the hit reality TV show to give presents to sick children at the hospital on Christmas Eve. The pair hope to raise £500 for the toys and gifts - £200 for boys, £200 for girls, and then £100 to get something for NHS staff on the ward as a thank-you.

Rhianna came up with the idea after being hit with thefts at her boutique. She had space in Lilly Rae’s key cutting shop on Bermondsey’s Blue, but had to move her clothes out during lockdown.

She put them in her car - only for someone to steal them. “I had all the stock in my car,” she said. “I reported it to the police, but they wrote me a letter saying there was nothing they could do.”

But now she is trying to “make a good thing out of a bad.” She is donating £2.50 from each order from her boutique which is now all online, and has started a GoFundMe to help purchase the

gifts.

She mentioned the idea to her childhood pal Ella Rae - and now the TOWIE star is getting on board to get kids Christmas presents too.

Ella told the News: “There’s so many families that can’t afford to do that because they haven’t got the money.

“So it’s just about giving kids the Christmas they deserve.” Rhianna added: “I love children, I’ve got a seventeen-months-old boy myself.

“And I couldn’t imagine anything worse for my little boy than being in hospital on Christmas Day. So I just thought how lovely would it be for someone to come in with presents and give them out.”

Rhianna and Ella are hoping to be able to give out the presents themselves on Christmas Eve on the ward with coronavirus precautions, but if they are not able to, they will give the presents to the hospital to distribute.

The event will be live-streamed on Ella’s Instagram to her 157,000 followers on Christmas Eve, too.

Charities and community groups tackling poverty and inequality in Southwark are being invited to apply for free help with web design, social media, making videos and marketing.

The project is part of London College of Communication’s Talent Works programme, which aims to support voluntary organisations with help from their creative students.

They are particularly keen to hear from groups adversely affected by COVID-19.

“Talent Works has proven a popular and effective way of supporting local enterprises whilst giving students opportunities and experience to work on real-world projects,” said Gill Henderson, London College of Communication, UAL’s cultural and communities partnerships manager.

“We were delighted to be awarded funding from Trust for London to enable us to focus on groups actively addressing issues like poverty and inequality – which have been further exposed and exacerbated by the

pandemic.

“Our students across design, media, and screen can provide fresh insight and innovative solutions so organisations can better communicate their mission, reach more people, and ultimately, have a greater impact on the communities they support.”

Talent Works has helped 67 charities and provided paid work for 113 students so far.

Damilola has been in my thoughts

I

would like to thank Londoners for sticking to the rules during another tough lockdown period.

With London moving into tier 2 restrictions and the emergence of increasingly promising news on the vaccine development front, we are finally starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel.

Despite this, the threat of COVID-19 will be with us for a while yet, so it is imperative that we sustain our efforts to keep each other safe by following the guidelines.

Damilola Taylor and his family have been in my thoughts as we mark the twentieth anniversary of his tragic murder on the

North Peckham Estate. Damilola wanted to become a doctor and I am proud to be supporting the Hope 2020 campaign, that his dad has been leading to honour what he might have achieved and to champion the aspirations of all young people. I look forward to joining Richard Taylor and many other campaigners to celebrate Damilola's life at an event to be held next year at Southwark Cathedral.

Two decades on, families are still being torn apart by violent crime. My priority is to find a way to put an end to this and restore hope in our communities.

Underpinning this issue is the exploitation of children at the hands of gangs and the county lines drugs

trade. This hasn’t stopped during the pandemic by any means, as criminals have been adapting to the situation.

This is why the early intervention work of charities such as Barnardo’s and their See, Hear, Respond programme and City Hall’s Rescue and Response initiative continues to be vital.

Ofsted inspectors recently praised Southwark Council’s children’s services - but said that interventions to protect young people from criminal exploitation or serious youth violence are not always timely or well-coordinated.

Given the prevalence of serious youth violence and criminal exploitation in the borough, it’s clear the pace of improvements must accelerate.

Rental e-scooters are to be trialled on the streets of London from Spring next year, including here in Southwark.

E-scooters are currently illegal for use in any public place. However, they are legal to sell, and demand for them is growing. The year-long scheme will address safety concerns and assess if e-scooters can provide an alternative to crowded public transport and help avoid a car-based recovery from the pandemic.

Finally, I have been pleased to see that a Community Health Ambassadors Network is being launched in the borough. These volunteers will help their family, friends and wider community make sense of the latest advice and information to help ensure we all stay safe. Please do get involved in you can.

ear reader, Christmas is coming and I fear this will be the last time I get to treat you until after Santa has put has mask on and socially distanced himself down your chimneys.

Hope can be a dangerous word, but as the strangest of years comes to a close and we look to 2021, and the prospect of a vaccine, it is time for us to remind ourselves of what is important to us as a community.

In 2020 we all had to adapt to a situation that challenged, confused and sometimes distressed us. Locked away in our homes, we got to know our neighbourhoods better and we looked out for our elderly and vulnerable neighbours. Many people reached out for help and they found it.

Never has our motto ‘United to Serve’ been so true. We all owe a debt of gratitude to council staff, all our key workers and all of our community for all they are doing during the pandemic.

The role of food banks and Mutual Aid Groups has been remarkable, even if the need for their existence is disgraceful in an affluent country such as ours.

Once again, local government has had to fill the void left by central government.

Like many young Irish girls, my mum came to this country aged eighteen to train as a nurse. She spent many an hour doing track and trace on the streets of 1950s Liverpool. In her day it was Tuberculosis and Syphilis rather than COVID-19. All those decades ago, she knew what we know now - that Track and Trace works best at a local level.

So I would also like to compliment the council on an effective track and trace system in comparison to the inept,

absurdly expensive and privatised approach of this Government.

Outside the pandemic, one of the issues your Liberal Democrat councillors have been pushing Labour on is the issue of cladding and snagging. This week we invited residents to present their experience of living in flats that they bought in good faith, only to discover that they may have unsafe cladding on, leaving them stuck – unable to sell, unable to raise any further mortgage on and trapped waiting for the Government to act. It is clear that many many people across Southwark are in a similar position. We have been lobbying both local and central government to intervene and I’m pleased to say that the council administration have agreed to work with us on this.

According to the charity ‘Trust for London’, before the COVID-19 crisis, close to a third of Londoners lived in poverty and London had the highest poverty rates in the UK. Sadly, here in Southwark this included an above average level of income deprivation - 50 per cent worse than the average London neighbourhood.

The pandemic magnified this and many fell through the cracks in benefits and support from this government – not least those who are self-employed.

The remuneration and benefits system is no longer fit for purpose in a modern, fast-evolving economy of our size especially as we head to an automated society. It seems clear that, if ever there was a time to re-think the fundamentals of society and capitalism, it is now. Coronavirus has shown us that the system isn’t working.

In the Liberal Democrats, we are pushing for the council to consult local people and lobby the government on a Universal Basic Income (UBI). If you aren’t familiar with the idea, the concept is simple but revolutionary: every individual in the country is paid a set amount each week, say £65. They don’t have to work for it and they aren’t means-tested for it.

This makes it simple to administer.

How can we pay for this? There are many ways, but one of easiest is through income tax, so that those on better incomes end up not being any better off whilst those on the lowest of incomes have a basic element of financial protection. The furlough scheme has shown that this can work and can offer a vital lifeline to people in the most precarious of positions in society.

As move into a world where automation replaces more and more jobs and the pandemic prevents others from working, we need this kind of radical rethink. The Liberal Democrats have called on the council to lobby government to look at Southwark as a pilot for UBI in London and I’m pleased to say that the administration have agreed to meet with UBI London – a think tank set up to explore how this could be done.

Anyone who says ‘nothing ever changes’ can take heart from this.

I will leave you with a final thought: whilst Christmas can be a time for family, it can also be a time of crushing loneliness and isolation, so spare a thought for your neighbour who lives alone or your friend you haven’t spoken to in ages. Reach out to them; at the end of the day, all we have is each other.

Is it all in the name?

Southwark Council went to the High Court as the News went to press this week, to seek an interim injunction against protesters.

As we have reported, protesters have blocked the council’s path to felling oak trees in Sydenham Hill Woods.

They hope if they are not forced out by a court order they can stay there until planning permission for Southwark to chop down the oaks elapses.

But there appears to be a bad omen for protesters.

For the judge overseeing the case is called Justice Cutts.

Tribute to Maradona

Footballing legend Diego Maradona sadly passed away last week, aged 60. But his memory lives on in Southwark.

A reader contacted us after noticing a tribute to the Argentine footballer, famous for the ‘Hand of God’ against England in the quarter-finals of the 1986 World Cup. A bus stop in Walworth’s Larcom Street was lit up in memory of Maradona, showing his football top with the signature number ten on it.

The tribute on November 28, has now gone viral on social media, having been liked nearly 60,000 times.

Support needed for our old-school boozers

W

hat is a substantial meal? Will I ever be able to reopen? Can I afford to pay my rent?

These are just some of the questions publicans are asking themselves this week as Southwark comes out of lockdown and into tier two rules.

This now means traditional Southwark boozers which cannot or do not serve food are unable to open.

Meanwhile, Christmas shoppers will be able to purchase items in stores all hours around the clock.

It’s no wonder that the hard-working members of the pub trade feel this is unfair, as they tell us this week.

It appears small, old school boozers are not being trusted to keep their customers safe during the outbreak.

But big chains who can whip up a microwave meal at a moment’s notice along with a cutprice pint can keep their doors open until 11pm.

To address this, the government announced a £1,000 one-off payment to ‘wet pubs’ in December. This does not even touch the sides.

Publicans tell us they have lost more in

spoiled beer sitting in the cellar, never mind the earnings that would normally come flowing in during Christmas and New Year.

The government needs to give these pubs already under siege from London’s ever-rising rents - more financial support than this to help them weather the storm.

Some boozers in Southwark are turning to serving meals to keep customers coming in.

One publican admits to us his three course menu is all from a tin or out of a packet.

But what choice does he have, when the government tells pubs it must serve a “substantial meal” but can’t even agree among itself what counts as one?

This grey area is another easy way in which the government could provide security and reassurance to those in the industry - rather than leaving it to publicans to wait and find out if a scotch egg really is a meal.

Southwark’s old-school boozers are a mainstay of our community. For those not able to open, the government needs to provide much more support than it currently is.

Otherwise we risk losing them once and for all.

ZENELE Muholi Exhibition Challenges Stereotypes Visually striking images greet visitors to visual activist Zenele Muholi’s photographic exhibition at Tate Modern, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor.

Confronted with the image of the lower portion of a black body, with scarred thigh, hands protectively covering genitalia and face out of shot, it’s unsurprising this exhibition’s purpose is to draw attention to the ongoing violence experienced by South African communities who do not prescribe to expected gender constructs and are experiencing violence, discrimination and hate crimes.

Despite political changes, South Africa being the first country to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation, Muholi’s images and film make up an exhibition that both exposes the continued hate crimes perpetrated on those from the Black LGBTQIA communities, whilst

also celebrating their refusal to be contained and subjugated.

This is demonstrated in a black and white photograph when one eye stares directly out from behind smoke, both connecting and challenging, making it clear that the issue of gender identity will not disappear until all perspectives are equal.

Journeying through the exhibition’s latter images, one can see participants express their identity through clothes and costume, flamboyantly and unapologetically owning their space, showing that despite the locations being segregated during apartheid, the act of transitioning enables a reclaiming of the spaces.

When we think of oppression, we might imagine being met with images depicting the shrinking of the subjugated, but Muholi’s images defy containment, using light to expose beautiful black bodies entwined protectively and lovingly.

Turner’s take on his modern world Britain was at war for a large portion of Turner’s life; it was a time of empire building overseas with an industrial explosion at home, and Joseph Mallord William Turner was documenting every aspect of life during that stormy time, writes Michael Holland.

As the nation’s wealth grew, so Turner painted the wars and the battles, as well as the canals and the machinery. He intrepidly visited battlefields and spoke to survivors and eye-witnesses to give his art honesty and integrity; he blotted his

landscapes with dark, satanic mills. And while he sold his paintings to the old rich he was opening his mind to the new ideas of writers and poets. Early paintings that once glorified war changed to works that showed the dying and the reality of conflict abroad, and also how it affected the people at home.

He was a chronicler of his everchanging contemporary world and kept abreast of those changes; Turner’s passion for waterways came through in his work, and he was there when steam and the railways made canals more or

less obsolete. At times his paintings were straightforward depictions of the world, at others there were obscure metaphors to hide his liberal leanings. Nevertheless, he covered parliamentary reform, and the slave trade in many artworks. His painting Slave Ship shows how the tragic human cargo was tossed overboard to save the ship in a storm and claim on the insurance. His Stoneyhurst, Lancashire work shows a picturesque scene of boisterous boys playing by a river with a school in the background. Reading

it allegorically, the image one gets is completely different as it represents the government’s U-turn on the rights of Roman Catholics.In the 1840s Turner’s art became more adventurous and less traditional, concentrating more on atmosphere and light, for which he gained new supporters but also lost customers - and even had one buyer return a painting! More importantly, his fame lived on; his style influenced many who came after, and some say he was the first impressionist.

The exhibition educates as well as

Muholi, adopts the stance of the beauty queen in a 2009 series, one of which is titled Miss Lesbian, where the viewer can see the performance aspect and use of props that became integrated as a means of escaping gender constraints. Muholi, stands in an aqua blue sequinned bathing suit, yet, with fists clenched and striking a boxer’s pose, is more a challenge to the viewer unable now to categorise this beauty queen by using standard definitions, and as Muholi states: ‘My mission is to re-write a black queer and trans visual history of South Africa...’.

A visually impressive, thoughtprovoking exhibition, definitely worth seeing.

delights. Who knew that he sometimes called on others to paint animals into his landscapes? His battles of Waterloo and Trafalgar paintings were based on notes he took from sailors aboard HMS Victory, and he sketched the ‘carnage’ and terrain when shown round the Waterloo battlefield. Born in another time, perhaps Turner would have been a photojournalist.

The exhibition notes inform us that ‘The uncompromising style Turner was using in the mid-1840s usually baffled his critics… these paintings… would almost certainly have been ridiculed in the press’.

But not any more.

Local flavour was added by ‘London From Greenwich Park, with the eye drawn over the Royal Naval College, down the river to Southwark and across to St Paul’s. A firm favourite for Rotherhithe people is The Fighting Temeraire, shown flying a white flag as it surrenders to age and neglect, the once magnificent sailing ship now being tugged by steam on its final journey to be broken up at Rotherhithe and the timber sold off.

At least some of the wood was salvaged and turned into a communion table and two chairs in St Mary’s Church, which itself has a great maritime connection.

ARTS When I heard that Dan West’s move from Canada to London led to him playing to over 10,000 people at Glastonbury but also to being made redundant over a Zoom call shared with 120 other people, I had to find out more, writes Michael Holland.

Dan, now a SE Londoner, first got into playing music at school where his teachers suggested he take it further.

‘I looked into doing a Bachelor’s degree in Music,’ he recalls, ‘which more or less set me down the path to becoming a professional musician and moving to London.’

With supportive parents backing his career choice, Dan studied first at the University of North Texas before a post-graduate Diploma at The Royal Academy of Music.

Since then he has played with most of Europe’s major orchestras, on film and TV soundtracks, with Septura Brass, and was formerly the trombonist in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera.

For several years he has been in SE London’s finest brass band, the Old Dirty Brasstards, who create magical covers of pop and rock classics. Dan counts his Glastonbury appearance with the Old Dirty Brasstards, and supporting The Who at Wembley, as career highlights, along with hearing himself on Hollywood film scores. He reveals with a wry smile that they were ‘a – perhaps self-indulgent – source of pride’.

Another highlight was performing Wozzeck in concert halls around the USA, including Disney Hall in Los Angeles, and Avery Fisher Hall in New York with the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Dan freely admits that he enjoys playing in front of big audiences.

But now Covid-19 has changed the world and for musicians it has changed maybe more than most. The trombonist declares that he loves ‘working with other likeminded musicians, operating together as a team to sound like one cohesive whole’. Now, 7 months into no live performances he says ‘It’s what I miss the most about performing with orchestras and other groups.’

I asked how Covid-19 has impacted on his profession. ‘It’s been decimated by the social restrictions put in place by the government. There has been very little work going around since social distancing became the order of the day, and many musicians like myself have been ineligible for the government’s various financial support schemes. Any funding for the arts has been slow to trickle down to freelancers like myself and we are faced with some very difficult choices…’

Even after the infamous Zoom call he takes some solace from losing his job: ‘I was ‘lucky’ enough to receive a modest redundancy settlement, so my family of four is currently living off that and the occasional session or socially-distanced concert which has come my way… I survived my attempt at homeschooling a five-year-old by spending a lot of time tending the garden, and I have rekindled my love of songwriting as a hobby.’

Another positive to come out of this is a ‘very special bond that has developed by spending more time with my wife and kids’. It is something

And as our interview came to an end he said this: ‘I really hope that musicians are not completely left behind as society emerges from the oppression of the virus. I worry for my industry and hope people who love music will spare a thought for the people who

make it for them.’

TEMPORARY WAITING AND LOADING RESTRICTIONS 1.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that, because of works

by SGN, it made, an order the effect of which would be to prohibit vehicular traffic from waiting and loading at any time in part of Lanvanor Road.

2.

Whilst the restriction is in place, and whilst the authorised traffic signs/road markings are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to wait, including waiting for the purpose of loading and unloading at any time in:

TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC 1.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable works to be carried out by Centurion, Conways, Connect TM, Paragon and UKPN it made, an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

Whilst works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in:

(c) Lanvanor Road, on the northern kerb line between No’s 32 and No’s 38. (d) Lanvanor Road on the southern kerb line between No’s 39 and No’s 43 3.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, insofar as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The restriction will come into force between the 14th – 22nd December.

Fans back – but club will make no money on match-days

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET chairman Ben Clasper has said that even with fans back at Champion Hill the club will make no money on match-days – and warned the government they will need more funding next year.

Following London being placed into Tier 2 of the new regional restrictions, the Hamlet can have up to 600 supporters back in East Dulwich.

League One Charlton Athletic welcomed back fans for their game against MK Dons at The Valley on Wednesday night, while Millwall are preparing The Den for a crowd of 2,000 when they host Derby this Saturday.

After plans to have fans back at games from the start of the National League South season in October

were shelved, fifth- and sixth-tier clubs agreed a financial package worth a total of £10million with the government.

However, Dulwich were one of nine clubs – along with AFC Fylde, Telford, Chester, Hereford, Kidderminster, Maidstone, Dorking and Chesterfield – to call for the resignation of National League chairman Brian Barwick over the distribution of the money.

The argument was over clubs being allocated money with no account taken of average gates, meaning those such as Dulwich would receive less money than they would normally earn on match-days. The Hamlet were allocated £36,000 per month over three months.

Dulwich had the highest average attendance in National League South last season, the only club in the division with an average of over 2,000. There were 2,376 supporters at

Dulwich Hamlet's Danny Mills on the charge against Tonbridge last February - in front of 2,663 fans at Champion Hill Champion Hill for their game against Hemel Hempstead on March 14 before the league was suspended.

Clasper has warned the government not to think that just because fans have been allowed back into stadiums at reduced capacities, that means their money worries are over.

“We make nothing behind closed doors, we’ll make nothing with 600 fans,” Clasper told the BBC. “Or a minimal amount, but it probably won’t cover the costs.

“So what we’ve got to make sure is that the sources of funding that are still in place, being promised for the start of next year, don’t go away.

“If the government think they have opened the gates, and therefore the clubs are okay, they’ve got a rude awakening about to come.

“We make more with food and drink than we make with gate receipts. If the rumours are true and it’s ratified that

we won’t be able to serve any food or drink, and if the number is under our season-ticket number, the seasonticket holders, then we will make nothing on match-days.”

Dulwich’s first game with fans back at Champion Hill is set to be next Tuesday with Eastbourne Borough the visitors to south-east London.

However, the club have been dealing with another issue that has seen their last two home games postponed, due to a floodlight pylon on the pitch.

Dulwich were due to host Maidstone United last Saturday and St Albans City last Tuesday.

Dulwich said: “Unfortunately, contractors were unable to rectify the damage in time and so the [matches] will now be played at a future date.

“As soon as we have been able to agree it with our opponents and it has been testified by the league we will inform all fans.”

The club’s players will join forces with staff and volunteers from Millwall Community Trust (MCT) to deliver a range of engaging initiatives and programmes designed to provide NHS workers from three local hospitals the opportunity for much-needed respite, as well as to support the needs of their families.

The impact of Covid-19 has put heavy pressure on hospitals, where NHS staff have continued to go beyond the call of duty every day, often at the expense of their own physical or mental health and home and social lives.

MCT’s ‘Hospital Heroes’ project aims to give something back to those who deserve it most and will include personnel hosting, among other things, personal food shopping/parcel delivery service; tea, coffee and cake mornings at the Lions Centre; virtual and face-to-face yoga and personal training sessions; plus a range of health and wellbeing services.

A selection of players from Millwall’s first team will also become virtual reading partners for the young children of NHS workers among other plans for families, which includes multi-sports coaching, booster education sessions, college support classes for teenagers, Zoom quizzes and interview opportunities with senior Millwall staff, and tours of The Den Not only that, but Millwall fans have yet again stepped up by donating money towards gifts for NHS staff and their families using the virtual ‘Hope Tree’ with all presents to be delivered before Christmas by Trust staff and volunteers.

Rowett said: “I am immensely proud of club and Trust staff for their commitment to what is an enormous and incredibly important campaign.

“The remarkable work of our NHS frontline staff has rightly been welldocumented in recent months, but we all know this particular Christmas period is going to be especially demanding and it’s important for them to know that others are trying to give a little bit back.

“I really believe that what is being done as part of this 'Hospital Heroes' initiative will help so many people, young and old, and yet again showcases just how much the club and Trust values its local community.”

Tom Curran joins brother as Invincibles sign quartet

Curran will be playing at his home ground alongside brother and fellow England international Sam, who was retained by Oval Invincibles last month.

Renowned for his death-bowling ability in white-ball cricket, Tom Curran has featured in high-profile leagues across the world including the

Big Bash and the IPL. “I am thrilled to be playing for Oval Invincibles,” Curran said. “I love playing at the Oval and it will be special to play in the first season of The Hundred at my home ground.

“I think The Hundred is an incredibly exciting competition and I’m really looking forward to it. We are building a strong squad with a number of local players which I hope will help us be successful next summer.”

Adams starred for Southern Vipers in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy in the summer, leading the side to the trophy with over 500 runs including an incredible 154 in what was a breakout

tournament for the Sussex-based batter.

Adams said: “I can’t wait for next year so we can finally get the long-awaited chance to compete in The Hundred. It will definitely be the spectacle of the summer and I’m particularly looking forward to playing a format of cricket where I can express myself as a batter and play expansive cricket.

“I’m excited about joining up with my teammates at Oval Invincibles and getting the opportunity to be based at one of the top cricket grounds in the country.”

Left-arm seamer Farrant is no stranger to the Oval and the south-

east of the country - the England international captained the South East Stars in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and has been a key member of a very successful Kent side since 2012.

“It’s great to know that I’m staying at Oval Invincibles for the first season of The Hundred,” Farrant added. “The women’s game continues to grow despite the wider challenges the entire sport is facing and next summer can’t come soon enough.”

Fellow England and Surrey seamer Topley will be lining up alongside the two Curran brothers at the Kia Oval.

Topley battled back from a series of injuries to feature for England in this

summer’s Royal London Series against Ireland. The left-arm quick moved to Surrey in 2019 on a white-ball deal after spells with Essex, Hampshire and Sussex.

Topley said: “It was a no-brainer to stay at Oval Invincibles and I’m really pleased it has been confirmed. I’ve got some good memories of playing at the Oval already and I’m looking forward to creating some more in The Hundred next summer.”

Gary Rowett’s side drew five consecutive league games, the first time that had happened since 1973-74 when Millwall couldn’t be separated from Carlisle, Blackpool, Portsmouth, Aston Villa or Hull City.

It wasn’t exactly a huge surprise given before the contest Millwall and City had drawn the most games in the Championship this season, seven and six respectively.

Both sides had also found goals hard to come by with a combined total of 22 in 28 games this season. And Saturday’s game was further evidence of two teams who were certainly finding the going tough in the final third.

Millwall forced the first real chance of the game after seventeen minutes, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson aiming a cross to Troy Parrott but the on-loan Spurs man, making his second consecutive league start, just failed to make contact with the ball six yards out.

It was tedious stuff. Birmingham didn’t create anything until the 40th minute, when Lukas Jutkiewicz was unable to convert Maxime Colin’s cross.

Jed Wallace, who was kept fairly quiet by the hosts, sent an effort well over from a free-kick just before half-time.

It summed up the lack of attacking quality.

The second half was just as uneventful

as the first, for the most part.

Millwall do not give many chances away and when they do teams have to take them. Blues failed to do that when Kristen Pedersen found himself free inside the box just six yards out, but he was unable to find the net from Ivan Sanchez’s delightful cross.

Banjo and barn door came to mind watching both sides’ efforts to find the target, especially when substitute Jeremie Bela curled a header just past the far post Then, just before the end, Murray Wallace almost tore up the script of this game. It was a spectacular effort, as Millwall’s left wing-back chested the ball before sending a bicycle-kick towards the top corner, only for Brum goalkeeper Neil Etheridge to make a superb save to deny the Scot a first of the season.

Millwall manager Gary Rowett said afterwards that Lions fans were probably frustrated after yet another draw.

But there were lots of positives for Rowett and his side to take away from St Andrew’s. It was a fourth consecutive clean sheet on the road and Millwall, despite their injuries, are so hard to beat.

Including Shaun Williams and Scott Malone – who were on the bench but weren’t fully fit to play any part against Aitor Karanka’s side – Rowett was without seven first-team players, far too many for a squad like Millwall’s to absorb without being affected. Rowett also revealed after the game that, remarkably, Jake Cooper had dislocated

his shoulder but somehow played the final fifteen minutes. It meant he had played every minute of the Lions’ last 136 league fixtures.

Those injuries also saw Jiri Skalal recalled to the line-up in the league for the first time in almost a year, while Bodvarsson made just his third league start this season – one fewer than his starts for Iceland since September.

To his credit, Skalak looked assured and calm in the defensive duties that he was asked to perform at right wingback. Yet it has to be said that he did not have an awful lot to do and wasn’t overly tested.

If he is to have more regular involvement he will need to get further forward to support the attack. Skalak has plenty to do to convince that he has a future at the club beyond the next couple of transfer windows.

As for Bodvarsson, it doesn’t look like he has let his poor miss against Cardiff affect him too badly. For a striker that is on a rotten run of luck in front of goal, he led the line well in stages at St Andrew’s, and with injuries to Connor Mahoney and Mason Bennett and a lot of games to come in December, if he keeps digging deep there is hope his rewards will come.

There might be some frustration at the number of draws in this campaign, but there must be some consideration, too. Not once this season has Rowett had his full squad to choose from and every week seems to bring another injury. Rowett was right when he said after the stalemate against Reading his side were doing well to still be in touch

with the top six.

The result in Birmingham meant the Lions had made their best start to a season in the second tier since 2003-04. It gave them 20 points after fourteen games – Dennis Wise’s team had one point more at the same stage in that season. By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL CHIEF executive Steve Kavanagh has explained the thinking behind seating arrangements for the return of fans this Saturday was “to create the best atmosphere possible”.

Two-thousand Lions fans are set to attend the game against Derby County, the first time supporters will be at The Den since last February.

Millwall sold 3,000 season tickets for 2020-21, and initially match tickets will be allocated to those supporters.

The government will review current tier restrictions in the middle of this month and if London is moved down to Tier 1 then that will allow 4,000 fans at The Den. Some clubs are placing fans in every second row and spaced a number of seats apart. There is also the logistically more straightforward and less costly option to put supporters in only one stand.

But Millwall want to try to ensure there is an atmosphere around the ground, with fans in ‘bubbles’ of up to six people.

“We want to get fans in there in their groups, in their bubbles to create the best atmosphere possible. There are other ways we could have done this which could have been easier,” Kavanagh said in an interview on the club’s website this week, alongside details of arrangements

Boreham defeated Isthmian League North Division Canvey Island 3-0 on Monday night to reach the third round for the first time in their history.

Millwall reached the fourth round last season before losing 2-0 to Sheffield United at The Den. Boreham Wood are managed by Luke Garrard, who at the age of 30 in October 2015 became the youngest manager in the top five divisions in England when he was appointed to replace Ian Allinson.

Boreham’s attack is led by legendary former Lincoln City striker Matt Rhead.

The 36-year-old spearheaded the Imps’ run to the last eight of the competition in 2016-17, the first non-league side to reach the quarter-finals in 103 years. He

scored one of the Wood’s goals at Canvey.

Millwall and Boreham have never met in a competitive game.

“The whole thing has been about getting to the third round,” Garrard said.

“The first goal settled the nerves. It was all about the third round and I’m absolutely buzzing. Now we have the chance to pit our wits against Millwall.

“We’ve come here, you guys are here to see an upset but that wasn’t on the cards for us. Now we have the chance to cause an upset.”

Rhead added: “I’ve been the underdog many a time and the fans [watching from the fences] get behind you, but to get to the third round for the first time in the club’s history is brilliant.

“This is a lot harder than being an underdog, like we were against Southend.

You have to turn up and we put them to bed comfortably. It was a good mentality from the lads and a great result.”

“We’ve been thinking about and planning this for months, different ways of doing this. Whilst it’s a lot of hard work we’re prepared to do it because we think the fans deserve it.

“And the team deserves it, they’re desperate to have the fans back in here creating the best atmosphere possible.

We could have tried to squeeze everyone into one stand, we haven’t done that. Yes that spreads people out but it also means the fans can create an atmosphere around the whole bowl. There are right ways and wrong ways but we’ll all learn different things as we move along.

“We’re trying to find the best route in a very challenging situation.”

Millwall have split season-ticket holders into two groups of 1,500, with plans currently - ahead of any government changes to tiers - that each group attend two consecutive home games, with the remaining tickets allocated using a ballot system.

“We hope it gives people the best opportunity to attend as many games as possible, and to reward those who have bought season tickets,” Kavanagh added.

“We’ve had so many false dawns since the summer thinking we were going to have fans back. We’ve looked at so many different ways and have decided this is the fairest, most equitable way to get 2,000 into 3,000 – it’s complicated and there are

different ways of doing it.”

Millwall have four home games in December.

Kavanagh continued: “Some people will be coming to more than that, to three games out of the four. Those smaller groups will be balloted on a match-bymatch basis. A number of people will be at the first game, a number at the second and so on through.

“It sounds really complicated, we’ve got it worked out and it will work and we’ll get as many fans in as possible.

“Everyone’s learned new words since this beginning, with ‘tiers’ and ‘bubbles’.

Logistically this has been so complicated.

“Right the way back to March and April when we had to build up to returning to training, to behind-closed-doors games, everything keeps moving.

“Then we think we’re there and it moves again. I don’t want to get political, but the tier system now, we’re in a scenario where we can have fans in because we’re Tier 2 but a number of our fans are based in Tier 3 areas. Under government guidance, even if they get sent a ticket they can’t come.

“So it’s really complicated and we’re chartering our way through this as best we can. Bear with us, we’ll have to adapt and move as things go along. And we know the fans will have to learn things, but if we all work together we’ll get this right.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk ONE CONSEQENCE of Millwall’s summer transfer business is that they will be without two loan players for four league games this season.

This Saturday, it is the turn of Scott Malone, who cannot face his parent club Derby County. The Lions were without Ryan Woods for the same reason as they drew 0-0 against Stoke City in September.

Malone’s unavailability further limits Lions boss Gary Rowett’s options in attack. Millwall could again be without Connor Mahoney and Mason Bennett, as well as longerterm injury absentees Billy Mitchell and Kenneth Zohore.

The coincidence about this fixture is it was Millwall’s first after ‘Operation Restart’ in June, their first without fans at The Den, and now their first with fans returning, albeit limited to 2,000 spread around the stadium.

Several Millwall players felt an eighteen-year-old would not have run amok in an intimidating atmosphere of an almost-full Den, as Louie Sibley did when scoring a hat-trick in the Rams’ 3-2 win here last season.

Since then, Derby have gone through a turbulent period. Philip Cocu was sacked last month with former England captain Wayne Rooney announced as the ‘senior figure’ in charge supported by coaches Liam Rosenior, Shay Given and Justin Walker.

“I am sorry that Philip and his staff have left the club and want to thank him personally for all his help and encouragement as part of his coaching staff,” Rooney said.

“The most important thing now is to stabilise the club and start moving up the table.”

Rooney, 35, was made sole interim boss last week and in his first game in

That’s their only defeat in the last nine league games in SE16, and Millwall have worked hard behind the scenes preparing for the return of supporters. One important consideration taken into account was where they would place fans, deciding to spread them around the ground to ensure the best possible atmosphere in the stadium.

Rowett has said he doesn’t enjoy playing in an empty ground, though neither he nor any of his players have used that as an excuse for their lack of wins.

The returning Lions supporters will have some optimism of a successful live reintroduction to their players as Millwall’s recent history against the Rams is good. They have lost just three of the last thirteen meetings since the Lions’ return to the Championship in 2010-11 under Kenny Jackett.

At the time of writing Derby were being linked with Aston Villa assistant manager John Terry, but Rooney is also in contention to be the next permanent boss and has even hinted he has played his last professional game.

Whoever is leading the Rams on Saturday, it will be a special day for 2,000 Millwall fans. They will hope their team marks it with a win.

Smith was McDermott’s first signing as Whites boss in the summer of 2013, joining on a free transfer from Oldham Athletic.

Former Macclesfield forward Smith was second top-scorer behind Ross McCormack in his only season at Elland Road. Smith scored thirteen goals in 43 appearances before his bizarre departure for Fulham, just days after he had signed a new threeyear deal with the Whites.

Leeds finished fifteenth in the Championship in what was also McDermott’s only full season in charge. McDermott was the first of six managers sacked in two years during the chaotic reign of Massimo Cellino.

But Smith holds McDermott in high regard for the manager’s advice when

It took Smith until the sixth league game to score his first goal for Leeds, after which he went on to have his second most productive season in the Championship, which he bettered in his first campaign with Millwall.

Smith had hit the woodwork three times this season before his header in the 1-1 draw against Cardiff. He also thought he had netted against Luton

Millwall are back at The Den this Saturday, when Smith will hope to add to his campaign’s tally against Derby, who are currently managed in an interim role by England’s record scorer Wayne Rooney.

“I’d be far more concerned if I wasn’t getting chances or getting on the end of things,” Smith said. “My manager at Leeds, Brian McDermott, always used to tell me [not to worry] when things like that happen and you miss chances.

“For instance, I hit the woodwork three times, I had a goal credited as an own goal, I’ve had a hand in a couple of goals – Brian McDermott used to say, ‘don’t worry, you’re in credit’.

“That kind of feeling resonates with me. I did feel I was deserving of a goal. It’s just about working hard when things aren’t dropping for you, working harder than you normally would do.

“Whether that’s doing more on the training pitch, more work in the gym, I focus all my attention on working even harder than I normally do, and the reward comes.”

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL COULD reignite their interest in Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Jayson Molumby in January’s transfer window.

Molumby, 21, is set to be available in the next market after failing to nail down a regular place in Brighton’s first team.

The midfielder enjoyed a hugely successful loan spell with the Lions last season, playing 40 times in all competitions.

And Molumby wasn’t satisfied going back to warm the bench with the Premier League side, especially as he

won his first senior Ireland cap this season against Finland.

He added four more international appearances for Stephen Kenny’s side – including a friendly against England at Wembley – and earned rave reviews for his performances in a struggling team.

Molumby is ambitious – having already captained Ireland under21s – and he bluntly gave Brighton an ultimatum before the start of this season.

“I was sitting around for long enough during quarantine, so I won’t be doing it once the season starts,” he said.

“It’s up to me to show the Brighton gaffer that I’m ready for the Premier League. It will be brilliant learning off

the likes of Adam Lallana, but I won’t be spending the season playing nonsense matches like under-23s. If the gaffer can’t guarantee me involvement, I’ll be straight back out on loan.”

Millwall tried to sign Molumby in the last transfer window, but Brighton weren’t keen to let the midfielder leave and potentially be short of options.

It was a Catch-22 situation for the Lions as they needed a replacement for Ben Thompson – a target for Portsmouth – but wouldn’t sanction a move for him without a guaranteed replacement lined up.

There is little doubt Molumby would be interested in a move back to SE16 in January.

“Spending the season at a club like Millwall built me up, both as a footballer and character,” Molumby said after his loan spell came to an end.

“My aim was to play 25 games and I got 40 in the end.

“I’m sure Millwall would be an option.”

Millwall boss Gary Rowett is a huge admirer of Molumby. He expressed an interest in taking the player back in the last transfer window, and his opinion hasn’t changed.

Rowett said after the end of the season: “He’s their player but should Brighton want him to come out and play games and develop further then I’m sure we would be interested.”

Smith, 31, signed on initial two-year terms from Queens Park Rangers in the summer of 2019.

The former Leeds and Fulham striker enjoyed his best-ever return as a Championship player last season, when he top-scored for the Lions with thirteen league goals.

Smith has made 57 appearances in all competitions for Millwall and scored seventeen times.

Smith recognises the financial strain clubs are under with fans unable to attend games since last March. That changes this week depending on which tiers clubs are in.

Millwall will have supporters back at The Den for the first time since February, but limited to 2,000, which means they are still absorbing a major hit to their main revenue stream.

Smith has had no contact over a potential activation of an extension or discussions on a new deal.

“No, not at all. I think I’m in the same boat as a good few others, there are a few other senior ones as well,” Smith said.

“But no chat, no correspondence in any way, shape or form.

“But I think with everything going on with Covid, the insecurity with no fans in stadiums, a lot of clubs might be taking their time and assessing when they will be coming back.

“Clubs outside the Premier League, the gate revenue is a substantial part of their income. I’m sure clubs will be excited to hear the news of when fans can come back, as the players will be.

“I would assume once [there’s more news on fans in stadiums] and January comes maybe players will start to have talks with clubs.

“But as of yet, no news whatsoever.”
