A new report, commissioned by the British Toy and Hobby Association (BTHA), based in Bermondsey’s Long Lane, found that 60 per cent of the toys tested from online marketplaces could cause serious injury or death to children.

Many are for sale via third-parties.

Shockingly, 86 per cent of those tested were illegal to sell in the UK as they failed to comply with child safety laws.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Royal Mail’s beleaguered East Dulwich service has seen death certificates go missing, one resident in court over an unpaid speeding fine, and others unable to buy food online during lockdown as replacement bank cards failed to arrive.

As the News has reported, local MP Helen Hayes has long called on Royal Mail to improve its service, saying the closure of its former sorting office coupled with sickness and increased workload from the pandemic had been disastrous for residents.

She has now taken her campaign to the government, demanding a regulatory review and that the problems facing the service in SE22 are taken to the ‘highest level’, saying the issues are a result of privatisation.

“Residents across East Dulwich have been inconvenienced, but many individual constituents have suffered consequences that are far more serious than being inconvenienced,” she told MPs. “Among the constituents suffering the most serious outcomes of this collapse in service are those who have missed important hospital

online giants to source toys and games to educate and entertain their children since the onset of COVID-19 and many are unaware that these sellers may not adhere to the rigorous safety standards we expect from products sold in the UK. “The BTHA’s important investigation has shed light on the prolific sale of these goods and the lack of responsibility for their regulation, I fully support their calls for accountability, more effective enforcement and improved consumer protection.”

The association says changes should be made to UK legislation to make online marketplaces jointly liable for thirdparty sales, and more powers for trading standards and other regulators.

Natasha Crookes, Director of Public Affairs for the BTHA, said: “Little or no action has been taken to make sustained changes that will protect children from unsafe toys.

“Faults we have identified include access to small batteries that burn the oesophagus if swallowed, use of restricted chemicals, small parts which are a choke risk, the use of long chords with their increased risk of strangulation and magnets which are extremely harmful if ingested.”

“In addition, dozens of replacement bank cards went missing, leaving some constituents unable to buy food online at a time when they were unable to leave their homes. Cheques went missing, including one for £4,000.

“One constituent now has to attend court for no other reason than that the letter informing her of a speeding fine arrived after the deadline for paying the fine had passed.

“Parcels for students leaving home for university have not been delivered before the start of term, and there are many cases of legal documents relating to power of attorney, care arrangements or conveyancing being lost or greatly delayed.”

She added: “While postal workers across the country have been serving on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic, Royal Mail’s chief operating officer and outgoing chief executive were both working from home, in Germany​ and Switzerland respectively.

“The outgoing chief executive, whose abrupt departure was announced in May, had received

a golden hello of £5.8 million, a sum that could have been used to hire 252 postmen and postwomen, just a few of whom would have been able to sustain reliable services for my constituents in SE22.

“The SE22 Royal Mail delivery office on Silvester Road in East Dulwich was sold for £7.5 million and is currently being developed for luxury flats, carefully designed to fall just below the threshold requiring any affordable housing.”

Responding to her calls for action, including bringing Royal Mail back into public ownership, government business minister Paul Scully said the problems with services in East Dulwich had improved since the worst of the pandemic.

“As to privatisation, there are some fundamental changes, not necessarily on ownership, that Royal Mail recognises and must address.

“It has a universal service obligation to keep six-day delivery right across the UK at a single price, but it also faces a challenge with the reduction in the number of letters being sent and the increase in the number of parcels, which as yet it has been unable to capitalise on as much as some of its competitors. A lot of functions need to be changed.”

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

Liam Gallagher spotted singing at the bridge

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Oasis star Liam Gallagher was spotted performing on a boat near Tower Bridge last Friday, sailing down the Thames.

Stunned fans were stopped in their tracks to spot the renowned musician on the boat. In footage shared online he performed his song ‘Greedy Soul’ as the boat floats down the Thames.

In other clips and videos, Liam’s traditional stage which reads ‘rock and roll’ can be made out.

“Just walked across Tower Bridge and heard music coming from a boat underneath - it turned out to be Liam Gallagher,” said one witness.

Another added: “Liam Gallagher singing Greedy Soul in London tonight.”

The impromptu performance is likely to have been for the trailer of a one-off live event on December 5, called ‘Down by the River Thames’.

Gallagher, best known for being the lead singer of chart-topping band Oasis, said December’s exclusive gig would be a “one-off celestial” performance.

“I'm performing a one off celestial live performance for you to stream, 'Down By The River Thames', on 5th Dec 2020,” he said.

“I'm performing tracks from my 2 number 1 solo albums and some stone cold Oasis classics, some of which you haven't heard for a long, long time.”

Tickets to the full concert to be streamed can be purchased from Live Nation from Friday, November 13.

Joe Biden’s great uncle was a Peckham bus driver

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Incoming US president Joe Biden has an unlikely Southwark link – his great uncle was a bus driver in Peckham.

According to Mr Biden’s cousin, Ralph, who lives in Surrey, Arthur Albert Biden was a Peckham bus driver who served on the Western Front in WW1.

While Mr Biden has frequently mentioned his Irish Catholic heritage through his mother’s side of the family, he has an English side of the family.

Ralph, a retired graphic designer who lives in Cobham, was unaware of the connection until a news reporter knocked on his front door last month.

Arthur Albert Biden drove lorries for the Army during WW1, having worked as a bus driver out of depots in Camberwell and Peckham, reports the Telegraph.

“From the sounds of it, it is remarkable that he survived, as he would have gone through shelling, gas attacks, assaults by the German army and so on,” Ralph told the newspaper.

“Other relatives have told me that conditions on the frontline were absolutely disgusting – if you stepped off the road, you went into a sea of mud with bodies floating in it.”

After the war, where he had transported British troops to Ypres, Arthur went back to bus driving in Peckham and Camberwell, on routes to Eltham.

And as a treat for the family, he would bring coconut cakes home from the bus canteen. He died in 1965, when Joe Biden would have been in his twenties.

Distant English cousin, Ralph, says he used to joke about being related to the man who is soon to be the 46th President of the United States, but only recently found out the exact connection.

“It doesn’t change things much really – although it’s probably better than being related to Mr Trump,” he also told the newspaper.

While Joe Biden has been projected to have won the US election by all the major news organisations, and demonstrated a clear lead in the popular vote, his opponent Donald J Trump is so far refusing to concede the election. His campaign has assembled a legal team to challenge the counts in several key swing states, with a hope of overturning the result.

But as things stand, Mr Biden is overwhelmingly likely to be headed for the White House on January 20, the date of inauguration.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk An eighty-year-old pensioner single-handedly led a woman to safety from a devastating flat fire in Peckham on Bonfire Night.

Retired painter and decorator Dave Moorcroft rushed outside his home in Caroline Gardens after hearing screaming n the afternoon of Thursday, November 5.

Residents had gathered after seeing smoke shortly before 4pm, with more than a dozen frantic calls made to 999.

Although the elderly resident of the burning flat was out when the blaze began, realising the front door and doors inside were open, quickthinking Mr Moorcroft went inside to check if anyone else was still in the property.

Mr Moorcroft, who has lived in the terrace for 28 years, told the News: “I went in just by the front door and it was full of smoke. I called out but there was no answer.

“The smoke was coming from the cupboard under the stairs, and you could hardly see.

“I went to the bottom of the stairs and called again and a woman answered.

“She said she couldn’t see because of the smoke, but I told her ‘you’d better get down here because this place is going to blow, soon’.

“She was screaming. She managed to get down and came outside with me.

“Within minutes the place was completely gone.

“As we got out the cupboard exploded and fire was licking the ceiling. Then the whole place went up.”

Video footage shows the windows being blown out and flames burst from the building before fire crews begin hosing the property.

The woman was later taken to hospital to check for smoke inhalation.

Six fire engines and forty firefighters arrived at 4pm and had the blaze under control by 5pm the same night, with crews remaining at the scene damping down.

80-year-old dave rescues woman from burning home

Pensioner attacked in care home

josh@southwarknews.co.uk An 81-year-old resident at a Peckham care home is fighting for her life after police say she was attacked by another resident.

Police say the pensioner was attacked on Saturday, at around 9.30pm.

The manager of Queen’s Oak Care Home confirmed the incident happened there. Police say the person who is believed to have carried out the attack “is being cared for.”

The victim suffered a serious head injury in the attack, and remained in hospital as the News went to press.

Her next-of-kin are aware.

“She is currently in hospital being treated for her injuries,” said the Met. “She remains in a life threatening condition.”

Manager of the home, Seye Fadipe, said: “There’s been no other events, everything is calm, everything has been worked out. Everybody’s up to speed, there’s no issues.”

He then declined to speak any more and referred inquiries to the company that owns the care home, Excelcare Holdings.

In a statement, Excelcare said: “The matter is under investigation; therefore we are unable to comment at this stage. The safety of our residents and staff is paramount in everything that we do.”

Police issue appeal after reports of an attempted gang rape in Burgess Park

Mr Moorcroft and his partner were allowed back in their homes by 10pm after safety checks.

The News understands the home’s tenant, who had been outside before the fire advanced, is now in emergency accommodation.

Almost all the home’s ground floor, and half the upper floor, was damaged - and likely most, if not all, his possessions destroyed.

Mr Moorcroft’s neighbours contacted the News to share his heroic actions, saying the residents were all proud of the OAPs ‘selfless act’.

Neighbour Bryan Emery, who lives with his wife Lea a few doors down, said: “What Mr Moorcroft did, at enormous risk to himself, was a lifesaving rescue of a young woman who has her whole life ahead of her."

A woman fought off five men during an attempted gang rape in Burgess Park in June.

Police issued their first public appeal this Tuesday, November 10, in relation to the attack.

They are urging anyone who may have dashcam footage from nearby roads, or have witnessed anything suspicious in the area at the time, to get in touch.

The victim was attacked by the group of five between 2am and 3am

while walking through Burgess Park, near Albany Road, on Saturday, June 13.

Police said during a ‘prolonged struggle’ she managed to fight them off, but was sexually assaulted during the attack.

One suspect is described as wearing white trainers, light denim jeans and a red hooded jacket. His hair was plaited.

A second suspect is said to have been aged in his 30s.

Anyone with information should call 101 or, to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

southwark’s covid figures continue to drop

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The number of new COVID-19 cases in Southwark dropped by 13.3 per cent last week.

In the seven days up to Thursday, (November ), 50 fewer positive tests were recorded compared to the week previously.

A total of 3,980 people have returned positive COVID-19 tests since the pandemic began but, in signs the second lockdown is working, Southwark has so far not seen numbers reach anywhere near the rate of infection as in parts of the badly affected midlands and north of England.

Last week, infection rates fell in more than half London’s 33 boroughs with Lewisham currently the lowest - putting it below parts of Dorset and

Sussex.

Currently, none of London’s boroughs fall within the worst affected 100 cities or authorities in the UK. There have also been no COVID-19 deaths recorded in Southwark in the last seven days up until Tuesday; this includes people who died within 28 days of a positive test and people with COVID-19 listed on the death certificate as a contributing factor.

However, hospital admissions are still high across London, with 109 people admitted due to COVID-19 alone on Tuesday. The admissions figures are hovering over 100 a day. There are currently over a thousand Coronavirus patients receiving treatment in London hospitals, but this is less than a quarter of the 4,813 in hospital on April 8 during the first wave.

On Monday, Boris Johnson quashed

hopes these positive signs - and news a vaccine could be start becoming available by Christmas - could mean an early end for London’s lockdown, saying that rather than a ‘slam dunk’ or ‘home run’ there was still work to do before Christmas to defeat the virus.

Specialist help will be given to ‘long COVID’ sufferers across the UK after increasing evidence from an app jointly run by researchers at Kings College London has revealed the extent of the troubling effects of the virus.

It is believed around a tenth of Covid patients may still experience symptoms more than three weeks after infection, and up to 60,000 people could be suffering from long covid symptoms more than three months later.

In October, the NHS announced it was pumping £10 million into specialist support, including specialist clinics offering physical and mental health support.

Much of the information collected about symptoms has come as a result of the COVID symptom app, run jointly by ZOE and King’s College London.

Its lead investigator, Tim Spector a Professor of Genetic Epidemiology, said: Our data shows us that over one in ten still have problems one month on and around one in 50 are still suffering after three months.

“Long covid sufferers experience a broad range of symptoms, which include up to 20 different problems and not just the three ‘classic’ symptoms used for diagnosis.

“This tells us that this is a multisystem disease that requires a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment.”

CARE WORK runs in the family for Maisie, who confirms looking after elderly people is “challenging but rewarding”.

“I worked as a customer service advisor, taking orders over the phone. It was mainly older people and I’d always get told off for chatting for too long, which got me

thinking about going into social care. Talking to older people wasn’t enough. I noticed they were quite lonely and I always wanted to help them. They were always so grateful for anything you did for them. I always thought I had it in me, I’m a caring person.”

Maisie underwent “exciting” fourday training, taking time out from A-Level studies.

“Now I work with people over 60.

It’s what I love to do. I work in the

community, providing home care for people who are trying to remain independent for as long as they can.

We give them extra help with all the bits they need support with.

“I would want my grandma and grandad to be treated nicely so I do things to the best of my abilities.

Even if it’s just making a sandwich or a cup of tea, it’s always 100 per cent.”

Maisie continued: “It’s not always the easiest job. Some days it’s very challenging and quite emotionally

draining. It’s not a job that you can come home and think ‘right, that’s done’.

“You come home and you think ‘I wonder how so and so’s getting on’. For all the challenging parts and handling different things, it balances out.

“I support a lady who’s over a hundred and she’s the most amazing person to talk to. You’re always learning from them. It’s fascinating.

They’re so much wiser than we are.”

mature oak trees in Sydenham Hill Wood.

The two-hundred-year-old oaks, which straddle Cox’s footbridge, will be felled early next week. A notice, put around the trees by Southwark Council,

explains that despite the decision being a ‘sad day’, Tooley Street and the trust which manages the site is faced with ‘ecological damage’ caused by a walkway that has sprung up in place of the unsafe bridge. It claims the cost

of keeping the trees while structural work is completed is not a fair use of public funds.

The council says felling the trees, completing the repairs, and planting two new oaks in their place will cost £232,000. It claims an alternative plan campaigners have put forward would be more than double; at £482,000.

More than 3,000 people have signed a petition, set up by Pennie Hedge, calling on the council to save the trees.

In a campaign update, Ms Hedge said: “The case for taking them down has not been made. They ignored our arboriculturist report, our engineers’ answers to their questions, our survey of over 160 bridge users and our request for an interim repair.

“At no point did they approach all the work we had done with support from the community Crowdfunder, in a positive way and say ‘let’s see how we can make this work.’

Campaigners say their alternative design is ‘viable’ and would actually increase the longevity of the bridge, as felling could make the land more unstable.

They are calling on the council to buy more time by removing rotten wood and making the balustrade secure, so the bridge can reopen, before doing more detailed work for a repair that protects the two oaks.

But, in an email seen by the News, a senior officer at Tooley Street confirmed the council will press ahead.

“Officers will now work with the London Woodland Trust and key stakeholders to source two large oak specimens, to be planted in a location just to the north-west of the bridge that will frame Cox’s Walk without compromising the structural integrity of the restored bridge,” the email outlined.

“With correct positioning, robust care and a commitment to provide a maintenance programme, these two large trees will help create a mature canopy at Cox’s Walk comparable to that currently enjoyed, adding to the amenity value, whilst also allowing the council to safely secure the bridge’s future for another 100 years.”

Majority in favour of demolishing Old Kent Road towers

Southwark Council published the results of its survey in a newsletter to residents on Friday, November 6. The full regeneration gained backing from 61 per cent.

In 2018 we reported how residents and the council had worked together on the future of the blocks, finally reaching an agreement on refurbishment.

But last year it emerged that the costs were likely to spiral, casting doubt on the feasibility of the project’s £8m per block budget.

The latest decision, based on information from more extensive surveys, included four scenarios: strengthening the four towers; strengthening the four towers and building between 87 and 130 new homes; a mix of strengthening one or more of the towers and the demolition of the others and replacing them with new homes; and demolishing the four towers and replacing them with new homes.

In the vote, 79% of those households still living in the towers took part, while turnout for all those eligible - including those who have relocated but have a right of return - was at 47 per cent.

There are several possible routes for the full tower demolition and rebuild.

All include the same number of social housing, or an increase.

One option could see the existing towers replaced with a low rise block on the site of Bromyard House with the other three towers replaced with low rise homes by Camelot School and an eighteen-storey tower on the Old Kent Road with a central

courtyard garden.

An alternative plan would replace the towers with a low rise block on the site of Bromyard House; and the other three towers with low rise homes by Camelot School, rising to a 20-storey Tower on the Old Kent Road with a street layout.

In the most similar to the current set up, a third way could replace the four fourteen-storey towers with eighteen storey towers, keeping current open space around the blocks.

Southwark Council says the decision will be put to a final, estate-wide ballot, in March 2021.

What is unclear is whether Southwark Council is picking up the bill for repairs or whether the issues are linked to the original construction.

A request for information on whether the taxpayer will be picking up the tab has not yet received a reply from Southwark Council.

Widespread new road changes across the borough have provoked an intense debate, with some opposed alleging they prevent the emergency services attending calls quickly.

The News has reported on one case in Walworth, where residents filmed firefighters being forced to get out of their engine to ask for directions at a roadblock.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A teenage rapist from Bells Garden Estate, who was just sixteen when he attacked a woman at knifepoint, has been given five years behind bars.

Eighteen-year-old Tamoy Bailey, (pictured) from Hastings Close in Peckham, was sentenced on Monday, November 9 after he was convicted of rape and false imprisonment following a trial at Inner London Crown Court.

Bailey was sixteen at the time of the time of the attack, on March 31, 2019.

He had met his victim earlier in the day and asked her to go to an address in Peckham.

The court heard that after arriving,

she was locked in a bathroom and verbally abused before being threatened with a knife and warned she would be stabbed unless she had sex with him. After the horrific ordeal, the woman managed to leave and immediately called the police.

Bailey was arrested on Tuesday, April 2, and charged with rape and false imprisonment. Judge Donne

sentenced him to a five-year custodial sentence with a two year parole extension for rape, and a three year concurrent sentence for false imprisonment.

Judge Donne said, “The victim pleaded with you stop, and you replied, ‘Do I look as if I care?’ This exemplified your attitude towards her.

“You did not care about her, you wanted sex and were willing to do what was necessary to obtain it.” He also stated that Bailey represented a “significant risk of harm to the public.”

Detective Constable Jake Good, of the Met’s Central South safeguarding team, described Bailey as a ‘violent sexual offender’ and an ‘ongoing risk to women’.

“He was arrogant in the extreme and thought he could get away with raping this young woman,” the detective constable said.

“I hope this result and the sentencing brings her some degree of comfort.

“Importantly, I would like to recognise her dignity while confronting the trauma he put her through, in addition to the stress of the court proceedings.”

Brigade, firefighters have not encountered major issues on access.

“At present, we’ve had minimal issues, I think it’s more so how fluid the situation is, getting the information quick enough,” he told a meeting of councillors last Wednesday week.

“We would rather be in the consultation earlier on and ironing out those problems before it becomes a problem.”

He said the bigger issue was sometimes getting the information from the council quickly enough. “I think on occasion, it may just be that the contact they may have for our current management team may not be up to date,” he said.

However, Mr Vydelingum added that planters blocking roads could prove difficult for fire engines.

“Depending on what the proposed restrictions are, if it’s a static flower pot or raised planter we would have issues getting through those,” he said.

“Removable bollards over planters, that would be our aspiration, but that depends on costs for the council.”

Fire engines also sometimes have difficulties navigating residential roads because of parked cars, he told councillors.

The London Ambulance Service has consistently opposed physically road blocks, over fears it could increase response times, instead asking for camera-operated barriers.

The Met Police have also indicated a preference for camera-operated barriers. Camera-operated barriers are more expensive to install than fixed flowerbeds.

Halloween attack in Peckham

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A boy was stabbed and a woman badly injured after an attack in Peckham’s Oakdene Estate on Halloween night.

Police were called to Carlton Grove at half eight on Saturday, October 31, after reports of a ‘significant disturbance’.

Officers and paramedics were alerted to a seventeen-year-old boy found with stab injuries. After being admitted to hospital, doctors assessed his condition as ‘not lifethreatening’.

An eighteen-year-old woman had also been attacked and received facial injuries. She was hospitalised as a precaution, while a fifteen-yearold boy with minor injuries was also treated at the scene.

Police said the ‘senseless and wanton violence’ involved a large group who fled as police arrived. They are now appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

One arrest has been made so far - a seventeen-year-old boy, who has been

bailed until the end of the month on suspicion of GBH. No further details of the suspects - including descriptions have been shared by police.

Detective Constable Jon Wormwald, from central south basic command unit, said: “This was a case of senseless and wanton violence which has no place in the community.

“We believe this incident involved a significant number of young people who fled the scene in varying directions.

“If you were in the area at the time and saw anything suspicious, we need to hear from you.

“Given that it happened in a residential area I am confident that a number of people may have witnessed this incident.

“I would ask anyone with any information that may assist the investigation and identify those responsible for the attack to get in touch with us as soon as possible.

“If you want to remain anonymous please call Crimestoppers and your details will not be shared with police but you will still be able to share what you know.”

Appeal granted despite elephant & Castle being boarded up

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The Court of Appeal has given campaigners permission to appeal the decision to give the shopping centre’s demolition and regeneration the green light.

The shock move came after the centre’s traders had all left or been relocated to new premises and contractors began decommissioning the building - with demolition due to begin within weeks.

No date has been set for the appeal, but the decision is sure to give campaigners new hope that the scheme can be overturned.

Permission for the appeal has been given to Jerry Flynn from the 35% campaign, whose focus is on lobbying for genuinely affordable homes and council housing. His bid has been supported by a coalition of campaigners under the ‘Up the Elephant’ umbrella.

Planning permission for the regeneration was given by Southwark

Council in December 2019, months after a failed High Court Challenge by campaigners, who highlighted the lack of social homes in Delancey’s plans.

Although the regeneration brings a new campus for the London College of Communication and other benefits, it only includes 116 social rent homes out of nearly one thousand - many of which will not be built within the next decade.

Although, as Delancey regularly points

out, there are no homes on the site at present.

Originally just 33 social homes were planned, but the number was raised due to campaigners’ consistent lobbying.

Securing affordable retail space was another win from activists including Latin Elephant.

The legal challenges have been funded with the help of an £8,000 Crowdfunding appeal.

After the announcement, Jerry Flynn said: “We look forward to the case going to the Court of Appeal. Southwark is not getting as much social rented housing from Delancey as it should be, while the need for it has become even more acute.

“Delancey are not building the homes and new shops that local people need.

“Their planning permission should be quashed and homes and shops that local people can afford built instead.”

Paul Heron, solicitor from the Public Interest Law Centre, said the case raised several key questions for local authorities across England.

“The case raises a number of important legal issues regarding how local councils should handle these developments,” he said.

“One concern is that Southwark council, and many councils like them, are failing to maximise social housing in these developments.

“Another concern is that councillors are failing in their duties – far too much power is being given to unelected

council officials in the decision-making process.

“This has to stop otherwise there will be a democratic deficit in planning law”.

The shopping centre closed its doors permanently on September 26, as protestors gathered outside with placards.

The real question is what happens next given hoarding is already up. In a statement to the News, a Delancey spokesperson said the developer was ‘disappointed’.

“While we await the Court of Appeal hearing date, which we expect to take place next year, works will continue on the site now the shopping centre has closed. These works remain permitted by the consents in place. We want to reassure all parties that we take our responsibility to supporting the local community extremely seriously and we will continue to keep everyone updated throughout via our website, newsletter and regular information forum meetings.

Two thirds of new cases in Southwark are from people aged eighteen to 39

Around two thirds of new cases in the borough are for those aged between eighteen to 39.

This is in marked contrast to the first coronavirus wave, where the over fifties were disproportionately affected.

Cases are not limited to certain areas in the borough, according to Southwark’s Head of Public Health Intelligence, Chris Williamson.

“The overarching message here is that constantly being one of widespread community transmission, without the kind of clustering you see in other parts of the country,” he told a meeting this afternoon.

The majority of new cases are caught in the home, from family members or visitors to the home.

Cases are lower than the London and national averages, and actually dipped in the days before lockdown. However, they are expected to begin rising again in the coming weeks.

Already Covid admissions to local hospitals have begun rising. There were fifty confirmed Covid cases occupying beds at King’s College Hospital, and 27 at Guy’s and St Thomas’ last week.

Officials also shared their frustrations at the national NHS Test and Trace team.

Southwark contact tracers have been hit with delays in cases being sent to them to trace.

“There’s times when we don’t get our cases until the end of the day when we’re meant to get it by 10am, that’s our biggest issue at the moment,” Mr Williamson said. “We don’t get any warning of the cases, they can fluctuate quite a lot day to day.”

The News has already reported that on average, national teams are only handing over cases after nearly six days.

They are supposed to hand over a case

children to make sure they can learn remotely if they are forced to self-isolate, and the same access to testing for school staff as is available for NHS staff.

Cllr Ali has previously slammed the government for not providing enough testing capacity for schools, telling the News in September that desperate parents had been ringing her up to ask if the town hall had any spare tests.

The councillors also have demanded extra capacity to support CAMHS, mental health services for young people.

One of the calls for support, free

school meals for those eligible over Christmas, has already materialised after a Government u-turn.

Making the announcement last weekend, Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey, said: “We want to make sure vulnerable people feel cared for throughout this difficult time and, above all, no one should go hungry or be unable to pay their bills this winter.”

The letter goes on to add: “We are extremely proud of the efforts to keep learning made by our children, their families and the education staff that support them.”

In a cross-party letter, the education leads of nineteen London councils have asked the government for more funding to “properly discharge our duties,” and protect “the health and safety of wider families and education staff.”

The letter, sent to education secretary Gavin Williamson, contains five demands, including

further funding for additional cleaning materials and to cover staff who are isolating because of Covid.

“As you will be well aware Covid-19 and the measures taken to prevent its spread have had a devastating impact on the health, wellbeing and education of the children we support,” states the letter signed by Cllr Jasmine Ali, Southwark’s deputy leader.

“We are eager to work closely with national government to minimise future harm.”

Appeal after Rotherhithe stabbing

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Police are appealing for witnesses after a boy was stabbed in his wrist in broad daylight in Rotherhithe.

Cops were called to the stabbing on Eugenia Road last Friday at around 3.30pm. A sixteen-year-old boy was found suffering a serious stab wound to his wrist.

He is being treated at a nearby

hospital. His condition is not lifethreatening, but it may be lifechanging.

The victim and his family are being supported by officers.

Two male juveniles were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. “We are not looking for further suspects,” said Ch Supt Colin Wingrove.

He added: “The incident is not believed to be gang related.”

Extra patrols were carried out over the weekend, including from the

Violent Crime Task Force.

Cops had established crime scenes at both Eugenia Road and Rotherhithe New Road on Friday while CID detectives investigated.

Officers had also considered bringing in extra stop and search powers in the area, but then decided it was not necessary “at this time.”

A lack of data on the ethnicity of new cases is also proving difficult.

“For a third of our cases we have an unknown ethnicity, and that’s after looking at the ethnicity provided at point of testing, and also after matching against records from the NHS as well,” he said.

“So it’s difficult to draw conclusions.”

Despite that, according to data presented last week, Southwark’s local contact tracing is among the best in London, both at reaching cases and their contacts.

The council has also launched a ‘community ambassador’ scheme whereby volunteers in certain communities are recruited to share accurate information about coronavirus outbreaks with friends and family.

Students and school pupils could also be recruited to the scheme, according to Acting Head of Public Health, Jin Lim.

Gavrilla Hotica, 23, confessed to sexual assault by touching in August, and was sentenced at the end of September. He was spared jail, but was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for five years.

When arrested, police say he told them: “I just touch.”

Hotica, of Bristow Road, approached his seventeen-year-old victim from behind at the KFC inside Victoria station at around 10pm on November 8 last year, a court heard.

He pressed his chest against her back, while looking over her shoulder to read her texts. He then moved to her side and touched her, asking where she was from.

The court heard that the victim moved away from him to order her meal, but he approached her again as she waited to collect it.

He then sexually assaulted her a second time. The victim, described by police as “intimidated and angry”, then went to sit with friends at a table after getting her meal.

When her friends learned of what happened, they told a security guard, who then rang the police.

“Hotica’s acts on that evening were wholly unacceptable, brazen and caused significant emotional distress to his victim,” said Detective Constable, Rabindra Singh of British Transport Police.

“He targeted a young woman and molested her publicly.

“We have absolutely zero tolerance for unwanted sexual behaviour on the railway and we will always do everything in our power to thoroughly investigate.

“I would like to thank the victim for her support throughout the investigation, and wish her well for the future.”

Alongside the ban lasting until 22 September 2022, Hotica was also ordered to pay £500 compensation, a £95 victim surcharge and £85 in compensation to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Rapid tests for school children

josh@southwarknews.co.uk New coronavirus tests which can display results in as little as fifteen minutes could be heading to Southwark schools.

Southwark’s acting head of public health, Jin Lim, said on Tuesday night that a rollout of lateral flow tests is being considered for schools, and potentially care home visitors and staff.

The tests are for the asymptomatic, raising the prospect of Southwark school-children being tested even when they aren’t experiencing symptoms.

Southwark was named on Tuesday as one of 67 local authorities where mass rapid testing is expected to be available.

Health secretary Matt Hancock wrote to public health leads announcing the initial 600,000 rapid tests, with weekly top-ups, giving councils capacity to test ten per cent of their population.

“They should, if they work wonderfully, provide results in about half an hour,” said Mr Lim.

Hundreds discharged into care homes without covid testing

space in the north of the borough because of the density of the space,” he said at a meeting of councillors.

“We’re still on the hunt for something in the north of the borough - the hunt’s not just for testing, it’s also about potential sites for doing the Covid vaccinations when that’s available.”

Councillors suggested Southwark Park and Deal Porter’s Square for a new testing site, which Mr Lim said officials would look into.

A proposal to set up a new test centre in the Geraldine Harmsworth park, next to the Imperial War Museum was junked, because it wasn’t a suitable space, he added.

Public health officials have also faced a difficulty in tracing some cases for a bizarre reason, Mr Lim revealed.

It is thought that people may be walking up to test centres and prebooking a test on their phone as they walk - and entering in their details wrong because they are doing it too fast.

“We are looking into it,” Mr Lim said.

Guy's and St Thomas's deny merger means job cuts

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Hundreds of patients were discharged from south London hospitals into care homes without first being tested for coronavirus, the News can reveal.

Until April 16, national policy meant hospitals were only asked to prioritise testing patients displaying symptoms before discharge into a care home. Now all those being discharged into homes are tested.

Southwark care homes were forced to take in new residents from hospitals during the first wave, with no way of knowing if they had Covid.

“There was a very limited capacity of testing,” said Emily Gibbs, of the south east London CCG last week.

At one of the borough’s major hospital trusts, King’s College NHS Foundation Trust, 244 patients were discharged into care homes between March 1 and April 15, during the peak of the first wave.

According to FOI data, 111 of those patients weren’t tested for coronavirus before being discharged, raising the prospect of them carrying coronavirus into homes asymptomatically.

Discharges from hospitals into care homes of patients with coronavirus has been attributed as one of the causes of the high death rates in homes nationally, as residents are in an extremely high risk group.

The hospital says it followed national guidance at all times, and they implemented testing before discharge in April, when it was recommended.

Officials in Southwark are now preparing for those who’ve been discharged from hospitals into care homes to be isolated

“We feel we should pilot this in particular settings.

“Perhaps piloting around schools and special schools, and possibly around care homes, and possibly around home care staff.

“We’ll also think about using it in university settings, some of the halls of residences.”

Hospitality staff are also being considered for the council’s allocation of rapid tests, but no concrete plan has been set. “It’s very, very early days,” Mr Lim said.

Council bosses hope that the tests will pick up previously undetected cases and stop them spreading onto others, and avoid the need for lockdowns in the future.

The council is “actively” hunting sites in the north of the borough for a new testing centre, and eventual mass coronavirus vaccination site.

Currently there are two test centres in the middle of the borough, in Peckham Pulse and Burgess Park.

“It’s proving very difficult finding

for seven days, to avoid repeating the pattern of the first wave.

“We’ve learned a lot of lessons since the first wave,” said Kirsten Watters, a consultant in public health at Southwark Council.

Speaking at a meeting last week in response to questions from the News, she said: “Initially there was pressure to free up over 15,000 beds across the NHS estate, so there was a discharge from into care homes and then lots of those care homes saw outbreaks.”

Forty percent of English care homes saw an outbreak during the first wave she said, driven by “inappropriate discharging from hospitals” and general increased community transmission.

When asked if Southwark saw that happen, she said: “I think we did, but I can’t get the scale of what happened, because we don’t have that data.”

At Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, 130 patients were discharged into care homes without a test over the same period, according to an FOI response.

Some of those had been admitted as a suspected or confirmed coronavirus case,

but still weren’t tested before discharge because they didn’t have symptoms.

A spokesperson for King’s said: “In accordance with current guidance, all patients being discharged to care homes are tested for coronavirus.

“In some instances, patients may be discharged to a care home whilst they are still positive - if they are not displaying symptoms, for example - but only where the care home can make appropriate arrangements to isolate them.

“We are working closely with local GPs and councils to ensure that patient discharges are safe both for the individual and other care home residents.”

Southwark witnessed at least sixty coronavirus deaths in care homes during the first wave. By July 15, sixty people had sadly lost their lives to coronavirus, thirtyfour of them at Tower Bridge Care Centre.

Now residents in Southwark homes are tested every 28 days, whether they have symptoms or not, to avoid transmission.

Guy’s and St Thomas’s is due to merge with the Chelsea-based hospital, which specialises in heart and lung conditions, to become one entity in February 2021. This will then be ‘reviewed’ after six months.

Southwark councillors have voiced alarm that the move will inevitably mean health professionals losing their jobs and ‘efficiencies’ found within services.

“There’s always a business case for a merger, it’s never purely ever bringing two brands together to create a super brand, it never is,” said Cllr Bill Williams, at a meeting on Tuesday night.

“I think people are naive to believe it. You’re going to have a six month review, inevitably there will be redundancies, whether they’re voluntary… but there will be job losses.

“I just think it’s disingenuous to say at this stage, there won’t be there may not be at point of merger, but there sure will be after the strategic review.”

Jackie Parrott, the chief strategy officer of Guy’s and St Thomas’, denied the merger would mean moving services from the Royal Brompton and Harefield in the immediate term.

“We are not pooling our staff yet,” she said. “Other than where we’ve got small groups where we may be able to move people across sites or pool their expertise.

“That’s not at all the conversations we’ve been having.”

Robert Craig, director of development at the Royal Brompton, also denied staff face losing their jobs because of the merger.

“Staff have asked us the same

questions, to say, ‘six months down the line there’s a strategic review, and then we all lose our jobs’?” he told the councillors.

“One can understand the anxiety,” he said. “But the review process is really an intention once we’ve had the merger of sitting down and saying how do we plan our future together.

“We’re convinced we’re going to need as many people as we currently have to continue providing the services we currently run.”

The two senior health officials also denied there would be any changes in the near-term to services provided to Southwark residents.

Councillors in Kensington and Chelsea, where the Royal Brompton is based, have also raised concerns that the hospital estate could be sold off as a result of the merger.

This was also denied. “In the short to medium term, as far as we can see in the foreseeable future, we’re going to continue using it as a hospital,” said Mr Craig.

“Much further into the future we will obviously be engaging with them [councillors] about the use of that estate if we decided we didn’t need it for hospital purposes.”

COUNCIL COULD BUY UP new EMPTY PECKHAm flats Exclusive

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Buying an empty block of flats in the Peckham Place development for social housing is on the cards, Southwark Council’s housing chief has confirmed.

Last week we reported on a protest staged outside the former Wood Dene site. Despite being demolished over a decade ago, the new complex has only just been completed.

Once home to over 300 council flats, the current housing mix includes 54 units at ‘affordable rent’ (up to 80 per cent of market rent), 201 for shared ownership, and 78 for private purchase.

At least 38 homes are on sale with a starting price of £440,000.

Campaigners staged a demonstration outside empty homes in October, calling on the council to take over the block to help house families in desperate need of accommodation.

Their call is not going unheeded even though, as the council’s housing cabinet member - Leo Pollak - has made clear, the local authority has limited powers to take over developments. The councillor has now dropped the strongest hint yet that buying up the properties could be on the horizon.

In a statement shared with the News, Cllr Pollak said: “We have long shared the ambition of campaigners to grow the stock of high quality council homes to meet the urgent need in the borough.

“This is why our council housebuilding programme, the most ambitious in the country, is now active on over 130 sites, delivering over 5,000 of our generational target of 11,000

council homes.

“While councils like Southwark don’t have the power to requisition property, we have been proactively talking to several builders who have good quality housing developments either on site or recently completed about taking on their homes, as well as reminding other affordable housing providers of the scale of housing need in our borough and the growing challenges that the pandemic places on families in Southwark.

“Since March, we have housed over 800 people who were at risk of or

already sleeping rough, and helped over 300 families living in accommodation with shared kitchens or bathrooms into self-contained homes, so they can safely self-isolate if necessary.

“We are aware of the completed block of empty homes raised by campaigners at Peckham Place, and will continue ongoing discussions with the owners about all options available to resolve this, including council acquisition.”

If the council did attempt to buy back the land or homes on it, the site would become the latest in its pipeline that has

been bought back after being sold off under past administrations.

Last year, Cllr Pollak described the difficulty buying land for council house building when speculation has driven up the prices as the ‘great south London land rush’.

Sites earmarked as ideal for new council homes in the past have been given ‘existing use’ values of around a million, only to crop up for sale at ten times the amount.

The GLA will now move its HQ next year from the iconic building on the More London estate to The Crystal building in Newham.

The Mayor says the move will save the GLA £61m over five years, and that the savings from moving City Hall to Newham’s Royal Docks can be invested in front-line services.

The Crystal will be renamed City Hall after the move. The current building on the More London estate is owned by a Kuwaiti company, and is set to cost nearly £10m a year in rent, and several million in costs and maintenance, says

the Mayor.

Mr Khan insists that the case for moving to The Crystal, which is owned by the GLA, is “impossible to ignore.”

But the London Assembly submitted a formal objection to the idea in August.

Chair of the Assembly, Navin Shah AM, told Mayor Khan: “Your proposals for The Crystal do not have a sound financial basis and, when one considers value as well as cost, are detrimental to the standing of the Greater London Authority.”

Under the proposal, assembly members can remain located in central London, but the business of the assembly will be conducted in Newham.

The GLA will also occupy a second floor of the London Fire Brigade’s HQ on SE1’s Union Street.

Tessa Jowell Health Centre in East Dulwich Grove, is now treating patients - more than 20 years after the former Dulwich and West Norwood MP first lobbied for an integrated community health facility in her constituency.

The centre, on the site of the former Dulwich Community Hospital, houses services from Guy’s and St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital and the Maudsley trusts, along with Omnes Healthcare and other specialist and voluntary groups.

Care offered includes children’s speech and language therapy, foot health and community diabetes support, care for vulnerable people including asylum seekers, health visiting, and rehabilitation including after falls.

Visits are currently by appointment only, or held virtually where possible, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Jowell, a former health minister, had been a psychiatric social worker before her parliamentary career. She died from a brain tumour in 2018.

In a public vote, residents chose to name the centre after the Labour MP from a shortlist of six, including Peckham GP and civil rights activist Dr Harold Moody.

£20k reward in dANIEL DUKE murder

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A new £20,000 reward is being offered by police investigating the unsolved murder of Daniel Duke in Kennington eleven years ago.

Daniel, who was 22, was shot three times in Alberta Street at around 6.45pm on Monday, November 2, 2009.

Critically injured, he managed to call 999 and tell the operator he had been shot before staggering to a nearby house, where he banged on the front door in search of help, and collapsed. He died in hospital the following morning.

The unsolved murder is one of the crimes investigated by a specialist team at the Met, which is now offering a £20,000 reward to anyone who provides information that leads to the identification, arrest and prosecution of the person or people responsible.

A year later, two men aged 21 were found not guilty of murder after an Old Bailey trial in November 2010.

The same month, an eighteen-yearold man was convicted of possession of a firearm and ammunition, and sentenced to three-and-a-half years in custody - the gun was the same firearm that killed Daniel.

But as yet there is no clear understanding of the motive, or who fired the fatal shots.

Detective Sergeant Susan Stansfield said: “It is now eleven years since Daniel was brutally murdered, but we remain committed as ever to finding his killer.

“His untimely death has left his family utterly devastated, and with no answers about who shot Daniel and why, their grieving and sense of loss remains.”

Detectives are re-releasing CCTV images of two men captured near a petrol station in Camberwell Road, within hours of the murder and close to where a silver Ford Mondeo was seen speeding away immediately after the shooting. The vehicle was later found

Fifty-one-year-old Desmond Mark, 51, (02.03.69), is believed to have links with the Deptford, Brockley, Catford and New Cross.

Mark is a black man, described as 5ft 8ins, slim build, with scruffy facial hair, pock-marked skin, and is currently believed to be walking with a limp.

The appeal comes following an investigation by the South East Burglary and Robbery Investigation Team into incidents of on Tuesday, 18 August in Vesta Road, SE4; Friday, 2 October in Halesworth Road, SE13; 3 October in Barriedale Road, SE14; 26 October in Inchmery Road, SE6; and Tuesday, 27 October in Sayes Court Street, SE8.

Detective Inspector Martin Thomas said: “Today we have released an image of Desmond Mark, whom we would urgently like to speak to in connection with our investigation and I am

appealing for members of the public to help us identify his whereabouts.

On the anniversary of her son's death, Khadija Samuels has pleaded with anyone with information to come forward.

She said: “Our nightmare began when we arrived at the hospital on the evening of November, 2nd, 2009 and the early hours of November 3rd, being told by the doctors they could not save Daniel.

“It is eleven years since we lost Daniel. During these eleven years I have lost friends and family because they did not recognise my grief.

“Coping with Daniel’s death meant changing my name, undergoing operable cancer surgery, ageing quickly and my body failing me.

“Living a double life, people who know me now and those who knew me prior to the murder.

“I have tried to be strong for our family, my boys and friends but I’m crying on the inside.

“Daniel was kind, always thoughtful and loyal and he had an extremely close bond with his siblings. Sadly we could not save him from his killers.

“My memories of anything happy or significant have totally disappeared.

My memory has gone and I write everything down, something as simple as my last birthday, my age or important dates I struggle to remember.

“I remember Daniel as a baby and his first day at school but his adolescent years are a blur.

“Tiredness from lack of sleep is normal and it now explains to me eleven years on why bereaved parents always look so tired.

“Daniel was loved so much. Seeing him during identification behind the glass screen, he looked very different and this was my first experience of seeing someone who had died. My

son was not coming back home.

“I saw Daniel again five weeks after he was killed before the funeral.

His colour, his hands and feet had changed. I asked the funeral home to dress him in the clothes that we chose for him.

“In grief you do not have control of your thoughts, sounds and visions.

During the investigation you have no control.

“I wanted to solve the case and wrote everything down that happened from the day Daniel was shot.

“There were six of us around the bed after Daniel was operated on and I remember saying "can you see his eyes moving?" The room was quiet so we prayed for him.

“For weeks my phone rang - it was the police, friends and family night and day. No one had the answer to my question ‘why?’

“I do not believe this is the end, I don't have religious faith but hope one day someone will come forward, a mother, sister, brother or even the killers.

“There are new detectives reviewing the case and they need your help.

Can you remember back 11 years ago on 2nd November 2009? Even if it is small, something you know, everything is significant.

“Our family has never been the same, we have been through this trauma together, the pain together and will be together when the killers are caught and prosecuted for this crime.

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters were called to a fire at a block of flats on Great Suffolk Street in Borough in the early hours of the morning, just after midnight on Saturday, November 7.

In total six people were rescued while another 25 fled the building before firefighters arrived.

Two vehicles in the basement of the building, used for residential and business purposes, were destroyed and parts of four further vehicles were damaged by fire. Half of the basement was also damaged by the blaze.

Four adults and two children were treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

Borough Commander Lee Sandy, who was at the scene, said: "Around twenty five people left the building before the

Brigade arrived.

"Firefighters used fire escape hoods to rescue four people from the building.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus also rescued a further two people. They were treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

"Southwark Bridge Road was closed whilst crews worked to make the scene safe and local people were encouraged to find alternative routes."

Fire escape hoods provide members of the public with up to fifteen minutes’ protection from four of the main fire gases (carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen chloride and

acrolein) and can be worn by conscious or unconscious people. If more than fifteen minutes’ protection is required then another hood can be given to each wearer. They do not provide oxygen but temporarily filter toxic smoke to make breathing easier.

Thirty 999 calls were made to the blaze from 00:50 hours and the fire was under control by 03:27 hours.

Fire crews from Lambeth, Dowgate, Old Kent Road and surrounding fire stations raced to the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.

thanks evelina for saving our harikesh Little Harikesh Halai was born in January last year with a rare heart defect, and was transferred to the hospital for treatment.

Eventually he had open heart surgery to repair his heart, as Harikesh had holes between the chambers on the left and right side of the organ.

“We were expecting Harikesh to have the surgery when he was around six months old, but it was bought forward because his heart was working too hard,” said mum Revti, who lives in Welling.

“The doctor compared his struggle to that of a person trying to run and drink at the same time.”

Aged just two months old, Harikesh had gruelling five hours long surgery to save his life.

“The first sight of our son following his surgery was a shock, he didn’t look like himself. He was swollen, covered with tubes and connected to numerous machines,” said Revti.

“The first 24 hours were critical in determining how he would recover. We were helpless and all we could do was wait."

But amazingly after just one day, 60 percent of the tubes attached to Harikesh were removed, and he went

out of critical care into the general ward.

A few months after the surgery, Revti signed up to run the London Marathon for the Evelina, to thank them for what they had done.

It was cancelled this year – but that did not stop her running the 26 miles through the streets of London.

“The operation has given him the opportunity to now live a long and active life. Without these amazing professionals our son’s story would have been a very different one,” she said.

“Thank you will never be enough.”

Mr Osuntokun, who was born in Nigeria, boasts an impressive career with over 25 years’ experience working on complex projects for over 30 FTSE 100 companies, and more than 50 Global Fortune 500 companies. He also heads up his firm’s Africa division with clients including the African Development Bank and Central Bank of Nigeria.

Children at Coin Street Nursery, on Stamford Street, took part in a project with Family Volunteering Club to give the drawings to older pensioners who may be isolated.

On Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November, Family Volunteering Club made individual visits to outside of the homes of the participants to deliver the artworks from the nursery children.

Each participant was also treated to a fifteen minute performance from a professional artist, Lola Oh, as well as songs from baritone Peter Edge.

“I am absolutely over the moon and

crying happy tears, I loved the singing and the beautiful picture from the children, my neighbours came out and enjoyed it too,” said one. ”I will never forget it, thank you.”

The children in the nursery had a fantastic, fun time creating works of art to share with the participants,” Jane Christofi, Head of Early Years Education at Coin Street Nursery said.

“This is the first in our intergenerational projects and we were really proud to be part of such a fantastic project bringing members of our community closer together.

“The children will be so excited to see the photos from the day.

The look on the participants’ faces will be a joy to share with the children and families.”

Down's Syndrome kids from Peckham raise £30,000 as they walk 300 miles A group of fifteen young children with Down’s Syndrome are walking 300 miles between them, raising money for a Peckham charity.

The kids are walking, running, scooting, cycling and swimming, to cover the equivalent distance from Land’s End to Peckham, raising money for Down’s South London.

So far they have raised more than £30,000. The charity, based on Lyndhurst Grove, says it has suffered more than £50,000 of lost income this year because of the pandemic.

It provides early intervention therapy, which it describes as “either unavailable to families, too infrequent or not specialised enough to make a real difference to our children.”

The mother of one child taking part, two-year-old Olive, said the challenge had helped her daughter walk.

“Olive’s greatest challenge has always

been her gross motor skills - she struggles to bear weight through her legs and needs a lot of support to stand,” said Stacey McDermott, mother of two-year-old Olive James.

“We thought we’d be doing a lot of bum shuffling to get her distance in but actually since starting this challenge, it’s like something has clicked and she is really motivated to walk and we’re seeing improvement every day.”

The challenge is particularly demanding, as children with Down’s Syndrome often have low levels of muscle tone.

On November 1, ten thousand tulips were planted across Bermondsey by the Greener Bermondsey project inspired by Ada’s example of planting tulips.

Ada was the first woman mayor of Bermondsey, and is known for her beautification committee, which transformed the area.

Residents involved in Greener Bermondsey, a non-partisan group, planted the tulips all over Bermondsey, including St James’ Churchyard.

But they also gave some away at the Blue marketplace, with some going as far afield as Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

One of those taking part, Isobel, said the project was “spreading a bit of hope” as the country goes into winter

during a lockdown.

And another involved, Kathy, said: “It’s people who make the difference if you give them the freedom and tools to do it.”

Bermondsey ward councillor, Humaira Ali, said: “In meetings over lockdown, residents cited housing, crime and the climate emergency as their top three topics. Damian, William and I came together with some brilliant people to found Greener Bermondsey, a non political group with an open invitation to all residents to help lower the carbon footprint of Bermondsey.

“Let's get Bermondsey on the map in the 21st century for yet another great reason.”

Greener Bermondsey hopes to take on more projects in the future to make the area a cleaner place to live.

Ultimately it aims to make Bermondsey one of the lowest-carbon areas in the country.

Lockdown, fireworks, The fifteen wine and parking minute city W H hen the first lockdown began it was late but vital. This new lockdown was preventable but the Covid infection rate is now too high and the NHS is again over-stretched treating people affected.

If the government’s test and trace system had been effective, infections would have been lower, the new lockdown could have been avoided and, most importantly, lives could have been saved. So much has already been sacrificed this year and sadly we are now entering winter in almost the same situation we faced back in spring.

Other countries have avoided this, but Johnson’s incompetent cabinet ignored success elsewhere and poured billions of pounds of public money into companies failing to deliver test and trace.

Whilst it is deeply saddening to be in this situation, it is crucial to keep doing your part. Stay home when you can, keep your distance and wear a mask as needed. Please also ensure your children and grandchildren do the same. The more of us play our role, the sooner we can all move forward together.

This October has seen some very nasty anti-social behaviour and criminal incidents around Canada Water station. Shocking videos show fireworks being launched directly at people and even at the police. Some people snipe at the police for not taking enough action but forget response times are longer and criminals more brazen after years of cuts. I will continue to work with the local police, including our Borough Commander, community representatives and the council to secure action to tackle the problems. The police have shifted their focus and deployed more officers to Rotherhithe and

have identified eight culprits.

Action is being taken against them, including at least one prosecution and others have been warned by the council their family could face eviction if they continue to cause problems, as reported in the News.

Please always report problems you see online or call 101, or 999 if it is an emergency or people are endangered. Reporting issues helps secure additional resources which is vital to prevent future problems!

In parliament, I recently helped those of you who like wine! The government was going to impose new import certificates for European wines on 1st January. I’ve been working with a Bermondsey based trade association to prevent this resulting in higher costs in shops and thankfully we have won a reprieve. I hope the government recognises its current damaging plans must be dropped or consumers and distributors will be hit with new costs just when all efforts should be focused on rebuilding our economy.

I’ve also been fighting for people living on Kennington Park Road who woke up in October to find the parking bays outside their homes had disappeared overnight without warning. Transport for London brought in a new 24-hour bus lane but forgot to inform anyone in Southwark. They did consult on the Lambeth side of the road, but failed to on the Walworth side sadly. Having raised concerns about this fiasco, I was glad to see the bays reinstated.

The lockdown means this month and beyond are going to be very hard for many people. Please continue to do your part to save lives and protect our NHS. Thank you for your continued patience and fortitude. Please stay strong and help keep Southwark safe!

ow long does it take you to walk to the shops? What about your nearest green space? The idea of the ‘fifteenminute city’ is that you should be able to reach shops, work, education, health, parks and culture in a short walk or cycle.

It’s an idea taking off in Paris, Melbourne - and London.

What’s available within a small circumference around home has become more important than ever during the pandemic.

Lots of Southwark residents are within walking distance of the basic elements of the fifteen-minute city.

But how good are the links between homes, shops and parks?

It’s not much fun walking when pavements are too narrow to pass each other comfortably. It’s horrible squeezing onto a traffic island as trucks thunder past on both sides, or holding onto children for dear life in case they step into the path of a car. Reduce the number of cars and vans, make space on pavements for people using wheelchairs and buggies, and suddenly walking can become a pleasure. A short walk to school becomes a time to talk, to notice the changing seasons, to say hello to neighbours, cats and dogs…

Pick up time at my local primary school has been transformed in recent months.

The street is now a ‘school street’: one end has been closed to through traffic with bollards, and for 45 minutes each morning and afternoon, staff pull moveable barriers across the other end, allowing in and out any residents who need to drive. Parents chat as children scoot and cycle up and down, letting off steam after the day. Small groups of older children walk home independently. You can hear birds – and new connections being made in relaxed conversation.

Unsurprisingly, walking and cycling to school is associated with better academic scores and improved behaviour.

Reducing traffic to enable walking and cycling is a virtuous circle, with benefits for physical and mental health, community and commerce - as the streams of people on foot and bike on Rye Lane and around the Walworth Road Low Traffic Neighbourhood suggest. A fifteenminute Southwark is within our reach.

The fact of the matter is the council housing list is so long that people often have to wait a decade to get housed. In the second wave give more thought to care homes

I

t is clear lessons need to be learned from the experience of care homes and their residents during the first coronavirus wave.

This week we report how hundreds of people were discharged from hospitals into care homes in south London without being tested first while the virus was at its peak. This isn’t hospitals’ fault; it was a national policy. Officials say that there was a rush to clear beds in hospitals, and a lack of tests to make sure discharges weren’t infectious.

This meant care homes were forced to take residents without knowing their coronavirus status. A lack of testing for asymptomatic care home workers also may have helped Covid take hold in Southwark homes.

Care homes in Southwark are now clear - they won’t take anyone without knowing if they are Covid-free or not. Work is ongoing to create seven-day isolation hubs in care homes to make sure infection cannot be passed on, and residents and staff are regularly tested.

But this also speaks to another lesson that needs to be learned from the first wave: the intense loneliness some in homes feel from a lack of contact with the outside world.

Restrictions on visits may be necessary to curtail the disease; but they come at a cost for the wellbeing of residents. We are glad this is something the sector is well aware of.

Speaking to councillors on Tuesday evening, the manager of Tower Bridge Care Home, Christen San Pedro, said she welcomed relatives’ visits where safe, saying it was important for wellbeing. “Even residents with dementia, it’s not just about memory, it’s about the feeling as well,” she said.

“It’s good for the residents, they respond more to relatives - we always advocate for family members to visit because they know the residents better than us.”

Where physical visits have not been possible - policies appear to vary from care home to care home - virtual visits have been used through Skype and Zoom.

This outside connection is crucial. Care home residents are vulnerable: not just to coronavirus, but the loneliness lockdown can cause.

We owe it to them to make sure they are not isolated during this difficult and challenging second wave.

This week we report how Joe Biden has an unusual Southwark link - his great uncle was a Peckham bus driver.

Unusually, he is not even the only US president who can trace their roots back to Peckham. Our attention is drawn to the fact that Ronald Reagan’s grandfather was a Peckham-ite, too.

In 1984, the definitive lineage guide, Burke’s Peerage, revealed that Reagan’s grandfather had lived in what they called a “ghetto” near Peckham Park Road.

The house no longer stands, and was the site of council housing in the eighties. A nearby pub, The Swan, was still open at the time, which helped genealogists track Reagan’s ancestry. It has since closed.

The novelist Neil Gaiman has thrown down a challenge: a personal postcard of ‘congratufuckinglations’ to anyone who can send him evidence of swearing themselves into office with a copy of his book, Good Omens.

It comes after reports that President Trump had joked that he could swear himself into office by holding up a copy of The Art of The Deal.

Mobility scooter parking fine hoax?

Spotted in Camberwell and doing the rounds online - a parking ticket on a mobility scooter.

The pic, taken on November 5, appears to show a mobility scooter on Camberwell’s Wren Road being hit with a fine. which is enfored by TfL not the council. It is unclear why the scooter would have been hit with a parking ticket, or whether it is in fact a hoax. The scooter also does not appear to have a number plate against which to register a fine.

remembering our fallen in lockdown Mayor of Southwark, councillor Barrie Hargrove, visited memorials across Southwark to pay his respects.

In lieu of a parade and service usually held to mark Remembrance Sunday, this year Alleyn’s school held a socially distanced event in its Great Hall along with pupils and staff from James Allen’s Girls’ School and Dulwich College. Led by Reverend Lander, the service saw Major Benest represent the Combined Cadet Force contingents of the three schools. Wreaths were placed by a regimental drum from the First World War’s 21st (First Surrey Rifles) Battalion; headquartered in Camberwell’s Flodden Road.

Pupils from English Martyrs RC Primary in Walworth were hard at work all week making these beautiful poppy displays to mark the Remembrance Sunday and held a two minute silence on 11th of November

16th Bermondsey Scout Group leader, Megan, visited West Lane where she live streamed the two minute silence and wreath laying to her fellow scouts, beavers and cubs. The youngsters also joined a special event held via Zoom, involving a group discussion about the effect of war on children.

The poppy pinned onto our lapels each year to remember our fallen soldiers from the First World War and the subsequent conflicts thereafter, is now so quintessentially British, but what are its real roots and where does Bermondsey come in?

Unsurprisingly, the idea of using the small blood-red wildflower as the emblem of our fallen came amid the battlefields of Belgium itself in May 1915. Moved by the death of his pal after the Second Battle of Ypres, Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian Army surgeon, wrote the now famous poem ‘In Flanders Fields’, in which he so aptly put it:“If ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders Fields. ” So moved by the colonel’s words, American teacher Moina Bell Michael in November 1918 began to wear poppies as her tribute and with money collected from her colleagues, she started to sell silk poppies to raise funds for ex-servicemen and women in her country. She even wrote her own poem ‘We Shall Keep The Faith’ in response to McCrae. She also taught a class of injured veterans and saw their desperate need for financial and occupational support and within two years the American Legion agreed to adopt it as their national symbol of remembrance.

It was in that same year, 100 years ago, that a Frenchwoman Madame Anna Guerin, who was involved in the artificial flower trader, paid a visit to New York and learned of the New York City Poppy. Taking the idea back to France she began to make poppies for distribution in the USA in order to raise funds for children made destitute by the war.

Meanwhile back in Blighty the Disabled Society was formed by a George Howson. He was a winner of the Military Cross for his actions at Pilckem

Ridge in the Battle of Passchendaele on 31 July 1917. Howson, despite receiving a shrapnel wound, encouraged his unit to continue repairing a road under shellfire. He was promptly promoted from captain to major. Within months the decorated officer married into money, Jessie the daughter of William Gibson. He was the Australian owner of the Foy & Gibson department stories, and he died a month after they tied the knot. Now in 1920, wealthy and retired from the army, this son of an Anglican clergyman was quick to do good and founded the Disabled Society with a Conservative MP in Liverpool Jack Cohen.

The following year on May 15 1921 The British Legion was formed, combining four ex-service organisations. It was during a visit to the UK that year that Madame Guerin met with Earl Haig and persuaded him to adopt the poppy.

The first official Poppy Day in this country was held on 11 November 1921, and those first poppies were made by women and children in the war devastated areas of France. It was such a success that demand far outstripped the supply, so Haig looked for a British supplier. George Howson pledged The Disabled Society could do the job, supplying The British Legion with silk poppies for the Haig Fund, and in doing so would give paid work to British veterans wounded in the First World War. And it is here that Bermondsey took its place in history to bring the Poppy Appeal to the people of Britain and at the same time help ex-service men and woman. In 1922 with a grant of £2,000 from Earl Haig, Howson established Britain’s first Poppy Factory. It was in a small former shirt collar factory on the corner of St James’s Road and the Old Kent Road.

It was the idea of Major Howson to make the artificial poppies we know so well today. He wanted them designed in such a way that someone who had lost the use of a hand could still assemble

them. The Poppy Factory he said could employ five disabled men. However, after a few months this small factory was providing employment and income for fifty disabled veterans. Together, they made over a million poppies to be sold by The British Legion.

Two years later in November 1924 the Prince of Wales (Edward VIII) visited the factory and ordered a large wreath for the Cenotaph. This started the factory’s long-standing connection with the Royal Family. By this time, the factory made some 27 million poppies and there was a long waiting list for prospective injured ex-Servicemen wanting employment.

The Disabled Society merged with the British Legion the following year in 1925, and the Poppy Factory became a company limited by guarantee with Howson as chairman. And with this success it had to sadly say a final farewell to Bermondsey. In order to expand, it moved in 1926 to the site of the disused Lansdown Brewery in Petersham Road, Richmond, using money donated by Howson. He then instituted the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey in 1928, and the factory started to make remembrance crosses and wreaths.

Howson lived at Hambleden, near Henley-on-Thames, with a town house in Kensington. He died of cancer of the pancreas in November 1936. He was buried at Hambleden, with the funeral service conducted by his father, by then an archdeacon and canon emeritus of Liverpool Cathedral. He was survived by his wife and their four children.

The present Poppy Factory was built four years before his death in 1932.

Today the factory, supported by home workers, produces 11 million poppies a year.

Hindsight is a look back in anger

Intrinsic to humanity is the desire to put a select few on pedestals, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the world of entertainment, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor....

Through his film, ‘You Know Nothing of My Work’, and using the theme of hindsight, artist Guy Oliver, winner of Jerwood FVU Awards, confronts us with the reality of the now disgraced, once popular icon.

After all, hindsight demonstrates how many fell from their once lofty heights.

Audiences watch the artist adopt the persona of the musical entertainer rummaging through a charity shop, sharing his surprise as he happens upon a now disgraced singer’s CD lying alongside the endless charity shop bric a brac. Ironically, the fallen entertainer immerses into art again through Oliver’s film, though now as the focus of our unease. Viewers may be prompted to consider the reality that music, film, art, and books, remain out there, despite the creator being either accused, arrested, convicted or even dying while still unconfronted of their heinous acts.

We question whether it is possible to separate artist from their art, to erase and obliterate the outpourings of those we once welcomed.

With hindsight do we learn, repeat, change or remain trapped within the structures carved out that perpetuate endless cycles of behaviour throwing up monuments to a chosen few, unquestioning the fact that we don’t know the artist, but merely know the work.

Shown from a female perspective is artist, and also winner of the Jerwood FVU Awards, Reman Sadani’s film Walkout 1. Viewers are faced with an apocalyptic landscape covered in red dust that is impossible to separate from the global issues we now face.

We watch young adults slavishly struggle to build sand dunes as if in hope of discovering a road out to where they can breathe, and find a solution to the dystopian nightmare.

Listening to the young declare, ‘I don’t know what to believe in any more’, while an elder member instructs them to continue in their actions, could question our own predicament where we blindly continue following the same behaviour, shackled by structures heralded as the only options available for us to successfully coexist.

Class of 2020 open to all Artist Rod Kitson, who has put Surrey Quays Shopping Centre on the map as a venue for art and artists, has now called out for artists to take part in Class of 2020, an exhibition to document a surreal time through the work they have produced this year, writes Michael Holland...

This inclusive group show will run from December 10-23rd in south London, and he is looking for entries from artists of all experience levels and styles. There are no other rules for entry – it just has to be something created during this calendar year. Up to five pieces of art can be submitted, so it could be a series of work that tells the creative’s story of 2020.

There is no theme around Covid or lockdown, the subject is completely up to the artist. And the exhibition is not being judged, it is to show what different people have been creating during the year, and to enjoy other people’s unique responses to this unusual time.

Kitson says, “All mediums, from drawing to painting, to sculpture and printmaking, and any other weird and wonderful creative practices you may have developed, are welcome… All work submitted will also go into an online catalogue, and we want you to tell your

story of 2020 alongside the work. Class of 2020 is about saying: ‘We were there, we experienced it together – and these were our creative responses”’ Following the huge success Rod had with The Art of Isolation, a lockdown exhibition earlier this year in which 140 artists participated, he will be keeping the format largely the same, with the work hung in a salon style.

That show saw a broad range of ages take part, from six to 76, and all experience levels, from the full-time artist to first-time painters, and he hopes to have as broad a spectrum this time around. International artists and people who can’t get their work to the gallery in person can submit with the online only option.

Always keen to help and entertain the locals with his series of communitybased art shows over the past eighteen months, Rod Kitson has now extended his bonhomie to his peers: “After a difficult year financially, I aim to make this a good opportunity for people to sell their work, so in the first week the show will be run as a traditional exhibition with visitors able to view and reserve work they wish to purchase, while in the second week buyers will be able to take the work they have purchased home with them on the day.’

French latex beetle turns into a butterfly Where do you begin with a woman like this? Well, she’s French, she plays accordion, sings, composes electronic music and makes videos, which is a whole lotta stuff to be getting on with, writes Michael Holland...

But there was more: “I’ve got two bands, one called Garance and the Mitochondries, that is AlternativeFrench-chanson-tropical, with whom I made my last album featuring a total of 25 musicians,” she trilled in a rather mesmerising accent that combines suave Français with gritty Camberwell, while I tried to work out exactly what that genre was or might sound like.

Alternative to what, I was going to ask until she stopped me short with, “The other is a trash-electro-disco project that is called Chewy She, and for this I do short humouristic, abstract videos dressed up as a latex beetle.”

Dressed as what? Did I hear that correctly?

“In addition,” she shouted over me, “I have a jazz-French-chanson project called Mademoiselle Loulou Orchestra.”

My head was spinning. Had I woke up in some distorted Dadaist daydream? “I am also a professional busker!”

I held up both hands in submission.

“Can we just go back a bit,” I pleaded.

“Excusez-moi, geezer! I ain’t finished yet, s’il vous plaît! - I also interpret Serge Gainsbourg in the Poinconneurs.”

My nut was truly done in.

So, people, welcome to the crazy world of Garance Louis, AKA Chewy She. I quickly realised from my initiation into that world that the best thing to do was to keep quiet and let the lady lead.

“I went busking for the first time at fiftenn years old, and never stopped,” she began. “Then, when I moved to London at nineteen, I met a lot of musicians by playing in the street and started my band Garance and the Mitochondries.”

I wondered what her parents thought: “When I decided to play acco---rdion at thirteen they bought me one for Christmas… They were not very up for me to not go to university and

come straight to London after my baccalaureate, so I tried to study but left after a few months and went straight to London without properly letting them know.”

That must have been awkward. “As my music career kicked off here, they ended up being proud of me, so it was all fine.”

The live shows developed into an artistic mix of theatre, costume and music and Garance’s career gradually grew. “When my parents saw a Chewy She gig for the first time I was a bit uncomfortable considering it is a very punk show and my costume was very revealing,” she says while oozing beaucoup Gallic je ne sais quoi. “I was aware of their presence so didn’t let

myself go completely. After the gig my mum said, ‘You have to let go more! Go crazy!’ I took her advice to the letter and felt much relieved about her answer.”

And now the virus. She spoke of the difficulties of trying to release music whilst being an independent musician, but talked about how she has adapted to the collapse of live performance by “showing it through the virtual world of the internet.”

She has been out busking again and looking at herself with therapy. Her manic life of before has been slowed down as she comes to terms with this Covid era. “I realised I needed to have ONE goal and not try to do everything,” she stresses emphatically. “I was very

confused, and like a maniac tried to do too many things. I was learning classical tracks on the piano by ear, learning a whole new set of covers to do live streams, doing a radio show, writing new music…!”

Garance is both excitable and exciting. I cannot imagine her sitting still and doing nothing, although she must do when she has therapy and acupuncture, which she took up in lockdown “to try to feel good in a mad world’” They were a success. “It is like I am having accelerated work on myself… It is quite intense and enjoyable and has changed me for the best’, she declares triumphantly.

She raved about loving the spontaneity of what she does and “the cathartic effect of creativity from turning ugly emotions into something beautiful… the collaborations with others… the magic of playing with people you meet for the first time… playing a gig and the connection between the audience and the performance… playing in the street and creating something that I never thought would have been created if I didn’t stop there, or if the passers by didn’t stop there as well…”

I was ready to let her stick needles in me or at least give me her therapist’s number. But I was warming to Garance and the vibe she radiated.

We spoke of her sense of achievement when she launched the album ‘Balance l’aurore’ with the Mitochondries, with a 20 piece orchestra. She described it as ‘overwhelming and beautiful’.

She stopped for breath, as did I. “I am spending more time making videos than I ever did before in my life, and I feel like it is a new, exciting path that I am taking into the unknown.” She emphasised how much more relaxed she is now and looking forward to finishing the Chewy She EP. But with no gigs to bring in the money there was a problem. The French chanteuse elaborates: “The only thing that was stopping me from completing the EP was the financial aspect, so I decided to do a crowdfunding campaign to finance the mixing and mastering.”

And with that she fluttered away like a butterfly. Just like that. Maybe to mix and master. Perhaps to go out busking.

From an initial boding of fear and shirking away from ‘Alternative-Frenchchanson-tropical’, I listened and grew to love it as much as I grew to love the Absurdist green-eyed lady who makes it.

Southwark football paused after restrictions

Peckham Town offer support to those struggling

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk ALL 'NON-elite' football in Southwark is currently paused until after December 2 following the government's new Covid-19 restrictions announced last week.

It means Fisher, Peckham Town, Peckkham Rye, Millwall Lionesses and Dulwich Hamlet Women’s seasons are on hold, but Dulwich Hamlet in National League South - which is deemed 'elite' - continue their campaign.

In a statement Peckham Town said: "We have had to unfortunately suspend all training and matches across all our adult and youth teams.

"The government has agreed that elite sport can continue behind closed doors, but that does not include grassroots football where all our teams play.

Emotional Morkel departs Surrey after three seasons

Sports Reporter sport@southwarknews.co.uk SOUTH AFRICAN fast bowler Morne Morkel has confirmed he will not return to Surrey Cricket Club for the 2021 season.

Morkel, 36, who played at the Kia Oval for three seasons, said helping the club win the 2018 County Championship for the first time in sixteen years "is something I will cherish for the rest of my life".

Morkel confirmed Covid-19 and consequent restrictions influenced his decision. He said quarantine requirements made it "no longer feasible" to spend time away from his family.

Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart paid tribute to the departing star, and added the club would take their time deciding on a replacement for Morkel.

In a letter to Surrey supporters and members, Morkel said: “When I joined the Brown Caps in 2018, after retiring from international cricket, I was immediately blown away by the club’s professionalism and rich history.

Football authorities in government talks over fans' return - report

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk THE PREMIER League are in discussions with the government over how the new Covid-19 vaccine could potentially help faciliate the return of fans to stadiums this season, accoring to a report.

That could have implications further down the football pyramid. Millwall last had supporters at The Den on February 29 and owner John Berylson continues to provide financial backing to make up for the loss of match-day revenue.

Dulwich Hamlet boss Gavin Rose told the News earlier this season it would be almost impossible to complete the season without fans at Champion Hill.

Pfizer and BioNTech, the developers of the vaccine, this week claimed it was 90 per cent effective against the coronavirus.

Health secretary Matt Hancock said vaccinations could start from next month.

Hancock this week told Sky News: “We have secured 40 million doses in total of the Pfizer vaccine and that means we can roll it out to 20 million people because it requires two doses per person.

“This is why we have been buying

across the board."

Evening Standard report that the Premier League are negotiating with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport over the possibility of a health passport.

Epidemiologist professor Gabriel Scally was asked by the Daily Telegraph about the potential return of fans and responded: “It will be well into next year.

It’s not clear whether [the] Government is committed to making the vaccine available to everyone who wanted it.”

Lions chief executive Steve Kavanagh warned in September that having no fans in stadiums was not financially viable.

He said: "No fans coming back into grounds is an absolute disaster. We need the fans, we’ve missed the fans, our fans are vitally important to us. But we need the income as well because we’re on our knees from an income perspective.

“We haven’t got the £100million the Premier League [clubs] get. Therefore football clubs from the Championship – and then you get to League One and League Two and it’s even worse – if they delay this, delay these clubs having income streams, across the country I don’t know what happens.

“It could be a disaster.”

Saturday’s lock-out at Hillsborough was Millwall’s sixth of the league season and third successive clean sheet away from home. The last time Millwall conceded a goal on their travels was on October 7 at Wycombe Wanderers.

Gary Rowett’s philosophy of making Millwall a defensively solid unit has been paying off. Fifteen clean sheets in the league in 2020 is a superb effort.

A large part of that success was down to the decision to move to a 5-2-3 formation - which has proved so solid away from home.

It’s repeating that kind of form at The Den which is proving to be a challenge.

The Lions have won just once at home in the league this season and kept just two clean sheets, compared to three away wins and four clean sheets.

Creativity seems to be the main problem for Millwall at the moment.

This is where problems are especially evident at home. When teams like Huddersfield arrive at The Den they will sit back, soak up pressure and try and hit Millwall on the break, something the Yorkshire side did to perfection recently.

Last Saturday at Hillsborough, it seemed as if Millwall were not quite sure which style of football they wanted to play. Rowett said after the game that the plan was to bypass midfield and get the ball up to Matt Smith early so that the hosts would not be able to win the ball back between the lines and then use the likes of Adam Reach and Barry Bannan, the creative sparks that could give the Owls the edge.

Mason Bennett can’t get an effort on goal

Third consecutive blank but Millwall dig in for draw to thank for this clean sheet. Just like at Norwich the previous Tuesday, he was in excellent form. He denied Josh Windass twice and made a superb save in stoppage-time to keep out Jack Marriott.

The Lions were on the ropes early in the game and could have been behind after just four minutes.

Murray Wallace was punished for some uncharacteristically indecisive defending against Elias Kachunga that on another day could have cost the Lions dear. Thankfully, Kachunga couldn’t find the target when one-onone with Bialkowski.

Millwall finally created their first chance 20 minutes in. Mason Bennett - back in the side after starting on the bench at Norwich - broke away down the left before cutting the ball back for Scott Malone, who saw his header flash past the post.

That brought Millwall into it and sparked a little bit of life in what had been a slow, lifeless game which would not have done much to warm the hearts of fans, had there been any present on what was a freezing cold afternoon in South Yorkshire.

Just a minute after that Malone chance, Jed Wallace - who was feeling unwell prior to the game but insisted on starting - provided a teasing cross for Matt Smith who headed the ball down into the path of Ryan Leonard, but the midfielder drilled his effort wide of the far post.

Wednesday responded with former Wigan striker Josh Windass stinging the palms of Bialkowski, just before Wallace curled an

effort over the bar.

Everyone knows Millwall’s ability from set-pieces, but they have failed to force many in the last two games.

Wallace did go close with a 30-yard free-kick at the start of the second half that went into the side-netting.

Wednesday came back with Windass again forcing Bialkowski into a save, although he had been forced wide by the Lions defence.

Then came Millwall’s best two chances of the game - perhaps the game’s best two chances.

Shaun Hutchinson didn’t cover himself in glory with his shot at Carrow Road last Tuesday. Here his header from Connor Mahoney’s corner would not have got more than a four from Strictly Come Dancing’s Craig Revel Hallwood. It’s safe to say his effort didn’t trouble Joe Wildsmith in the Sheffield Wednesday goal.

Smith had a glorious chance from another Mahoney delivery. The ball was inch-perfect but the usually reliable Smith sent his header wide of the near post despite being unmarked.

Rowett was quick to admit afterwards his team’s performance was poor and that the imminent international break was welcome.

The Lions will be content with their form on the road since the last round of international fixtures: eight points from a possible twelve and just one goal conceded. But, if they are to be a

consistent threat in the top-six picture, they must start finding the net. Eleven times in 2020 the Lions have failed to score in a league game. That’s a figure that is simply too high for a side looking to challenge.

The hope is that the return of Troy Parrott will see the Lions be more clinical and take more chances.

But Parrott needs to hit the ground running and get into his stride quickly - the attack needs his quality.

Eleven games in 39 days right through until the end of 2020 will give all of those in the Millwall squad the chance to prove their worth.

They need their fringe players to take those chances - and not just rely on the mainstays to keep grinding out results.

The Lions are ninth in the table as the squad get some rest during the second international break, but that’s just five points off first-place Reading in a wideopen looking Championship this season.

In their three previous seasons in the second tier after the same number of games they were fifteenth (eight points off top); 22nd (fifteen points off top); and thirteenth (eleven points from first place).

Gary Rowett’s side have also lost just two games, the fewest at this point in their four seasons in the Championship since their return from League One. “I think if you offered us this start we probably would have taken it,” Wallace said. “Typically we don’t normally get going until Christmas, certainly in the time I’ve been here.

“So if we can maintain what we have been doing, stay in and around that chasing pack in the next block of games after the international break then we can challenge near the top part of the table.

“With the manager we’ve got and the squad we’ve got that’s what we should be doing.”

The attacker celebrates his goal against Neil Harris’ Cardiff - who the Lions face next campaign, the same as after eleven games last season. He ended the campaign with ten, but the last of them was on January 28 in the 3-2 defeat at Leeds.

He had a conversation with Rowett in the summer about how he can improve his goal threat and maintain it over a full season.

Wallace is relatively pleased with his haul so far.

“It’s been decent,” he said. “Four goals is good. I’ve missed a couple of chances, which is actually a good thing for me because I want to make sure I’m getting into those positions. But I should have

done better with them.

“I’m getting more shots after getting into more goal-scoring areas. I’ve got the lads behind me, and lads with unique abilities to create chances.”

Rowett missed three games after testing positive with Covid-19, before he returned as the side ground out two 0-0 draws in tricky fixtures at Norwich and Sheffield Wednesday.

Wallace enjoyed playing for Alex Pearce and Shaun Williams as his teammates oversaw games against Preston and Huddersfield.

But the attacker was pleased to see the manager back, with assistant

Adam Barrett - who also had to selfisolate for ten days - joining the boss at Hillsborough.

“It was a boost, just having [Rowett’s] presence there and clear instructions, knowing what to do.

“In modern football you can do things on Zoom, but it’s not the same as having the manager there. He can get the information to us so quickly, he understands exactly what we need to do, what we don’t need to do.

“Having him back, mentally and physically it gave me a bit of a boost.

You realise more how important these people are when they’re not there, as

well as Pearcey and Willo did.

“Pearcey said to me as soon as we got in the car [to go to training], ‘it’s good to have the gaffer back’. It meant also we got Pearcey and Willo back in the match-day squad. They’re still two very big players for us. But the gaffer is the most important person at the football club.

“The squad looks really good, you need strength in depth and competition for places and at the moment that’s what we’ve got.”

That depth is set to be increased with the return of Billy Mitchell after the international break. Troy Parrott is currently on international duty with Ireland under-21s and if he comes through training and sees competitive action then the Lions should have more firepower this month.

Kenneth Zohore, who made such a big impact in his only start, scoring in the 2-0 win at Preston, is sidelined for longer but is on course to return in December.

“Everyone knows what Ken’s all about, a big, powerful man and he has scored goals at this level,” Wallace said. “With Troy it’s important we don’t put too much pressure on him. He hasn’t played much this season so we can’t ecpect him to be a world beater, it’s going to be a learning curve for him.

“But he looks like he has very good movement, he’s an excellent finisher, and he’s very good at linking the play, so I’m looking forward to playing with him.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL MANAGER Gary Rowett wants his Lions to be “greedy” to strive for a higher position in the table - and he believes there is plenty more to come from the side.

Almost a quarter of the way into the league season, Millwall are ninth, two points off sixth.

When Millwall’s 70 points and goal difference over Rowett’s 44 league games in charge is averaged over a full season’s 46 games, it would have been enough for the Lions to finish fifth last season.

Rowett and his team’s ambition is to reach the play-offs this campaign.

“I think we’ve continued looking like a really good, organised team,” Rowett said.

“The Championship is a tough division and there is lots and lots of competition from other clubs that are as big if not bigger than ourselves in terms of the expectation.

“We’re in a decent position. There are some games we felt like we could have done better, other games we were pleased with.

“The consistency level has been pretty good.

We’ve only lost two games.

“We’ve won four. In an ideal world we’d like to have won one or two more. That would have got us into a really healthy position.

“But I’m not disappointed. Sometimes you have to look over a whole. We’ve had 44 games at the club and in that period we would be in and around the top six.

“There has been a real consistent element to the players. Within that year they’ve progressed really well.

“But we’re greedy, we want more, we want to achieve more and be higher in the table.”

Millwall have let in eight goals in eleven games - only Middlesbrough (5) and Swansea (7) have conceded fewer.

But the Lions have only scored ten goals, with just Boro and Luton (both 9) netting fewer of the top sixteen teams in the division.

Rowett signed Troy Parrott and Kenneth Zohore in the summer but the former hasn’t played yet in the league, while the latter scored on his only start. Parrott should be back after the international break, with Rowett hoping Zohore has at least a month’s worth of games in him after he recovers from injury before his loan ends on January 16.

Rowett said: “Our main two signings in terms of trying to give us more in the attacking area of the pitch have both been unavailable.

“We’re a team that will get better, we will improve. We’ve missed quite a lot of chances that have not been that difficult chances in games.

“We’ve shown that we’re a hard team to beat.

Defensively we’ve been superb, what we want is to try to get the balance right [with attack]

because that’s the only way you get into the top six in this division.

“That’s our aim, but that doesn’t mean we should be automatically entitled to do it. We’ll just keep trying to do it.

“Over the first quarter I’ve been satisfied, that would be the best way to describe where we are, but there is certainly room for improvement.”

Rowett is philosophical about not having two of his best strikers available for most of the season so far.

“It’s part and parcel of the game, and I certainly don’t want to diminish the value of the other attacking players in the squad,” he said.

“Everyone is doing their bit and everyone is desperate to kick on.

“But you’ve got two very, very talented players in different ways. One in Ken who’s been there before and done it with Cardiff and showed in the small glimpses that we’ve had that he’s the type of striker that can make a difference.

“And Troy is a younger striker with more potential.

“It’s difficult to look at the effect missing those two has had, but it’s part and parcel of the game, part and parcel of the Championship.”

Rowett, meanwhile, is full of admiration for his defence. Shaun Hutchinson, Murray Wallace and Jake Cooper were the back three in 0-0 draws at Norwich and Sheffield Wednesday, giving their side such assurance.

Rowett added: “You can add Pearcey [Alex Pearce] into the mix as well. We’ve got four centre-backs who desperately, desperately want to keep the ball out of the back of the net.

“When you add that to Bart [Bialkowski] who’s been in such good form over the year, it’s a good formula. They’ve been very, very consistent.

“I don’t think there are many better centrebacks in the division and we’re grateful to have them.

“I think the challenge is playing three from four because they’ve all been very good. I’m sure we’ll need all of them to maintain that defensive resilience.

“And that’s their job, they’re doing their job and the team is doing its job. It’s the team working hard to try and improve.”

Goals dry up - but returning forward offers hope OPINION

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk AS MILLWALL went into the second international break of the season and a much-needed rest period, it was clear to see where the work needs to be done.

Nil-nil draws at Norwich and Sheffield Wednesday are creditable enough especially considering they shipped nine goals in their three previous games against the Canaries and haven’t won at Hillsborough since 2005 - but it was a third consecutive blank.

Not only have the goals dried up but so too have the efforts on target. The Lions had none in their last two games. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Bart Bialkowski faced fourteen shots on target but couldn’t be beaten.

That’s where Millwall have few problems.

They had less than 40 per cent possession against Norwich and the Owls, yet you wouldn’t say any of Bialkowski’s saves were stunning efforts.

That was mainly down to how tight a back three of Shaun Hutchinson, Murray Wallace and Jake Cooper kept things in front of their stopper. Those three look like they were manufactured in a steelworks.

Outside them wing-backs Mahlon Romeo and Scott Malone, who love to get forward, were forced to prove their defensive worth.

It’s in front of that defence where things get trickier.

Ryan Woods and Ryan Leonard have been the preferred midfield partnership this season and both are excellent at what they do. They screen so well in front of their defenders and rarely allow opponents to play through them.

Leonard is the more attacking of the two, and has scored two goals this season - 40 per cent of his total since joining in August 2018.

But neither player is an incisive forward passer, capable of splitting a defence to

Scott Malone misses against Barnsley. Millwall have not been clinical enough this season get a team-mate in behind. Woods’ job is to get on the ball deep and pass it on to a colleague in space. Leonard is probably more comfortable winning the ball back and making late runs off it into the box, which he did so effectively at Wycombe to score the winner.

When Millwall’s defence is forced deep and it’s difficult for Romeo and Malone to get up the pitch, it puts a lot of onus on the front three to be creative and make chances.

When even one of those players is off form, Millwall are blunted. That was the case at Carrow Road. Jed Wallace didn’t provide his usual spark, and boss Gary Rowett later confirmed he had been feeling ill before the game.

Wallace is his side’s main threat. He takes a lot on himself, from picking the ball up deep and getting his side up the pitch, to then trying to get in the box on the end of

chances. He has scored four goals so far this season, a decent number after eleven league games.

Wallace has performed to such a consistently high level since he joined the club it almost feels unfair when he is criticised when he dips below it.

That’s when he needs his team-mates to step up and take on that pressure to produce. Rowett said after the last international break others would need to take their chances in a period of seven games in three weeks. But that didn’t really happen.

It’s still a source of frustration that Connor Mahoney isn’t fulfilling his potential. There have been glimpses - he scored a superb goal in the 2-0 win over Luton - but he was taken off in the 3-0 defeat at home to Huddersfield before he replaced Wallace at Sheffield Wedenesday. In fairness, at

Hillsborough he put a peach of a cross in for Matt Smith, one of the best headers of the ball in the league, but the striker skewed well wide of goal when he was all alone six yards out.

That’s the other issue. Between them this season, Smith, Tom Bradshaw and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson have scored one league goal (Bradshaw at Swansea).

Rowett knew during the summer that area was a problem. He signed Troy Parrott from Tottenham but he has played just 45 minutes this season after getting injured against Burnely. Kenneth Zohore came in, also on loan, from West Brom and looked a real threat. In just one start he scored as many goals as the other strikers at the club.

Mason Bennett has also not scored yet this season.

Chopper fights off the Blues Former Millwall boss under pressure in Wales

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk NEIL HARRIS has had a difficult start to the campaign with Cardiff and a former Bluebirds midfielder weighed in with criticism this week.

Ex-Ireland international Graham Kavanagh questioned what Harris’ philosophy is after Cardiff’s 1-0 defeat to Bristol City before the international break.

Harris - who quit Millwall in October 2019 before being appointed as Cardiff boss the following month - has overseen just three wins in eleven Championship games this season.

Cardiff are fifteenth in the table with thirteen points.

Kavanagh was critical of Harris’ vision

for his side after their defeat to the Robins. “[They] have been poor tonight with no creativity at all. Not sure what the philosophy is,” Kavanagh said.

“I think there needs to be more energy in the team in general. They look very onepaced. I don’t see anyone over-lapping or breaking the attacking line to stretch the game. They play the game in front of the opposition and it’s too predictable, for me.

Not enough questions asked.”

Kavanagh wasn’t buying the line there is a hangover after Cardiff’s play-off semifinal defeat against Fulham last season.

He said: “That’s long gone. Players have to come to terms with that and put it behind them. A game plan of lumping it then hoping for second balls is not going to get you out of the league - unless it’s

dropping a division.

“I personally think the manager needs time but he needs backing and I’m not sure they can give it to him because the squad needs an overhaul.”

Harris was convinced his side had done enough to beat City.

He said: “We have created enough chances to win two or three games and we have to find that clinical edge. Some of our football was outstanding and it baffles me how we have not won the game.

“Any sane person who watched that could see it was a very strong and good performance, but people also look at results first - and we should have more points.

“Our performances are improving massively, and we will pick up results.”

closed, there’s not much Rowett can do but wait and hope. Parrott is set to return after the international break and will offer the abiity to link the play and he has also shown he is an excellent finisher. Millwall fans will hope that the hype surrounding the striker is jusfified.

Zohore is out for longer, and it’s a shame that we haven’t seen the full potential of the side with those two forwards unfortunate with injuries.

It would be a lot to expect Parrott to solve Millwall’s goal-scoring problems, but if he can stay fit he will certainly improve the side.

Despite their lack of goals, Millwall are just two points off sixth with almost a quarter of the season gone.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL MANAGER Gary Rowett is excited by the prospect of Troy Parrott's return after the international break - but won't put too much pressure on the striker to "blast away the Championship."

On-loan Tottenham forward Parrott has yet to make his league debut for the Lions after injuring his quad in preseason and then damaging his ankle against Burnley in the EFL Cup. Parrott is currently away on international duty with Ireland under-21s, who have two European Championship qualifying fixtures.

Rowett revealed Ireland intend to be careful with him and the Millwall boss hopes some match action and full-contact training will bring on

his fitness as he targets involvement against Cardiff after the international break.

Millwall have a need for a creative presence up front as well as a finisher.

They didn't score in their three games before the second break of the season.

Billy Mitchell is also set to be available for senior action.

"It's hard to put too much pressure on them, particularly Troy," Rowett said.

"He's only a young lad at eighteen, we can't just presume he's going to come in and blast away the Championship at those tender years. But what he's proved already is he's a good footballer and I think he would give us a different type of attacking threat.

"That would be nice to see and hopefully after this international break we'll get to see that.

"Pre-season you saw that absolute quality he has in front of goal. He's an excellent footballer and probably one

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BILLY MITCHELL played his first full 90 minutes of competitive action this season and is set to be ready to take on the manager who gave him his full Millwall debut.

Danny McNamara is on loan with St Johnstone in Scotland and scored his first senior professional goal to give Callum Davidson's side a 1-0 win over Kilmarnock last Friday.

He signed a season-long deal but Millwall have the option to recall him in January.

"It's a hard one at the start of the season, I always think, because you're going to go with experience in key positions," Rowett explained.

"But I think as the season goes on we're going to see the likes of Hayden Muller coming through, Tyler Burey coming through.

"You can see the development of Danny McNamara in Scotland, we've got some really good young players.

"With someone like Billy leading the line it's really bright for Millwall's future."

Mitchell, 19, was in midfield for Millwall under-23s on Tuesday as they defeated Crewe in their Professional Development League game.

The midfielder hasn't played for the senior team since the last day of last season against Huddersfield, after suffering a serious hamstring injury in pre-season.

Millwall play Cardiff after the international break. Bluebirds boss Neil Harris handed Mitchell his first senior appearance at Wigan in May 2019.

Mitchell is highly rated by Lions manager Gary Rowett, and is set to add competition for Ryan Woods, Ryan Leonard, Shaun Williams and Ben Thompson in midfield.

Dan Moss scored the only goal of the game for Millwall on Tuesday.

Under-23s boss Kevin Nugent said: "It was a totally different game to what we were expecting.

"Different to what we were used to as well.

"If you're looking at the possession count in the game, you've got to be looking at 80-90 per cent. We put loads of balls in the box, but probably didn't work their goalkeeper enough. It was tough to break them down, though. They set up to park the bus and stay in the game for as long as they could.

"In the end, we broke them down and had a couple of chances after that. I'm really pleased for the boys."
