Where do mps stand on corbyn anti-semitism row?

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Harriet Harman and Neil Coyle have backed the decision to suspend Jeremy Corbyn from the Labour party over his response to an anti-Semitism investigation, while Helen Hayes has so far declined to address the action taken against the former Labour leader.

Last week Corbyn said claims of anti-Semitism, detailed in a new report from the equalities watchdog, were 'overstated'.

After subsequently being suspended from the party, he went on to describe the backlash as 'political intervention'.

The report, published last week by the Equality and Human Rights Commission, highlights 'serious failings' in Labour's approach during Corbyn's tenure, and described its complaints process as 'inadequate'.

On Thursday, October 29, shortly after the party announced its decision, Harman - who has twice been Labour’s interim leader - tweeted: “This is the right thing to do. If you say that antiSemitism is exaggerated for factional reasons you minimise it and are, as Keir Starmer says, part of the problem.”

The Camberwell and Peckham MP did not join Corbyn on the campaign trial during last year's general election and, in 2016 after a motion of no confidence in Corbyn as leader, she warned that that if he continued leading the party he would

"be responsible for damage to the party on the gravest scale".

Neil Coyle had backed Jess Phillips as Labour’s new leader in last year’s contest but has been impressed with Starmer’s tenure so far.

Coyle has since attempted to draw a line under the infighting afflicting the party - including his own constituency.

“Today’s response shows real leadership and I hope builds bridges again with the Jewish community who we should all be focused on, not the cranks who caused the damage. New, strong, bold, healing leadership,” Coyle said.

He added: “The Party has taken a firm stand and is moving on. It needed to happen to rebuild our reputation.

“No attempts at bullying will change that now.

We are the better for it.

“If anyone is unhappy with rules applying to all members equally then perhaps Labour was never really for them.”

Not commenting on Corbyn’s suspension, Helen Hayes tweeted: “The conclusions of the independent Equalities and Human Rights Commission investigation are deeply shameful and sobering. It is right that the recommendations are accepted and implemented in full so that the Labour Party can begin to rebuild the trust of British Jews.”

Hayes has often walked a fine line between making her feelings clear without directly criticising Corbyn or his supporters.

A request from the News to confirm whether or

not she supported Corbyn’s suspension did not receive a reply.

Meanwhile, Southwark Momentum is mobilising in support of Corbyn, arguing his suspension is an example of the ‘lurid factional warfare’ miring the party and the ‘unfit structures’ that led to the party’s failures to tackle anti-Semitism.

In a statement provided to the News, a spokesperson said: "Southwark Momentum stands in unreserved solidarity with Britain's Jewish communities, which have been appallingly let down by the institutions of the Labour Party.

“In the wake of the EHRC report's release, Labour should be soberly addressing its failures on antisemitism, and that vital ant-iracist struggle should be the focus of the party and its members. Instead, the party leadership has mired us in more lurid factional warfare with the unjust suspension of Jeremy Corbyn.

“Keir Starmer's claim to have made the ‘difficult decision’ to suspend Corbyn suggests an egregious political interference in Labour's disciplinary processes, of the sort the EHRC itself cited as one of Labour's key failings.

“This politicised suspension demonstrates that the Labour Party's institutions remain unfit for purpose.

“We call for the summary suspension of Jeremy Corbyn to be dropped and the proper process to be adopted in relation to all complaints."

before Keir Starmer gave a press conference describing the report's publication as a 'day of shame' for the party and vowing to fully implement all its recommendations.

Soon after, a party spokesperson issued the following statement: “In light of his comments made today and his failure to retract them subsequently, the Labour party has suspended Jeremy Corbyn pending investigation. He has also had the whip removed from the parliamentary Labour party.”

In Southwark, the London Ambulance Service has consistently opposed hard road closures, over fears that they could increase response times. The Met Police has also indicated to Southwark they do not support hard road closures, instead preferring cameraoperated roadblocks.

The issue will be discussed at a council meeting on Wednesday evening, after the News has gone to press. Philip Morton, the head of Southwark’s Fire Brigade, is due to attend, as well as council officials responsible for roads.

Neil Coyle asks government about deaths due to road blocks

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The government has declined to order the abandoning of road changes such as Low Traffic Neighbourhoods if it could be shown they are causing deaths.

In response to questions by Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP, Neil Coyle, the Department for Transport’s Rachel Maclean said the government has made no assessment of how road changes are impacting the emergency services.

Mr Coyle asked if the government would commit to ordering recent road changes be abandoned “in the event that it is shown that those restrictions are causing deaths that would have been avoided without their imposition.”

Ms Maclean said the road changes were ultimately the responsibility of local councils.

“The Department has made no assessment

of how the emergency services have been affected by the introduction of new road layouts,” she said.

tony’s the pride of Britain

£1.5million raised will help to pay for a specialist therapy area to be named in his honour at the Evelina Hospital

A six-year-old boy who has raised more than a million for Evelina Children’s Hospital, where his life was saved as a baby, has won a Pride of Britain award.

Tony Hudgell, who had both legs amputated after being physically abused by his birth parents at just a few weeks old, was presented with the award by TV stars Ant and Dec on Sunday night (November 2).

Readers will remember Tony’s incredible fundraising walk, where he set the challenge of walking 10 kilometres in his new prosthetic legs throughout June, with the support of his adoptive parents.

Tony miraculously survived multiple fractures, dislocations, blunt trauma, multi-organ failure, toxic shock and

sepsis as a baby - with medics saying he was seconds away from death.

The hospital has now announced that the money raised will be put toward a new, specialist therapy space for children with similarly complex needs. The Tony Hudgell therapy area will be inside a new hospital building, opening in 2026.

The money will also help fund equipment to help children having muscle and bone surgeries and treatment, and rehabilitation therapies for children during their recovery.

Tony’s mum Paula, 52, said: “We started the fundraiser to get Tony walking and to raise a bit of money for the hospital that means so much for us.

“Now a Pride of Britain award and £1.5 million pounds later we are completely lost for words.

“Tony knows it’s a wonderful achievement and he absolutely loves the trophy. To be given the award by his idols Ant and Dec really was the icing on the cake for him.

“It’s just wonderful to know that the impact of Tony’s determination will be felt by other families like ours for years to come, “It is so wonderful that a little boy who fought so hard to survive with the help of the doctors and nurses who did so much for him can give something so meaningful back.”

Mr Michail Kokkinakis, Tony’s orthopaedic surgeon at Evelina London, said: “Words can’t express how proud I am of Tony.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A young swan was ushered to safety by police in East Dulwich after it was found waddling dangerously close to traffic.

Passerby Judith Arkwright told the News that she and her husband spotted the bird in East Dulwich Road, on Sunday at around 9pm.

“We managed to shoo it to the railings on Goose Green and stop it from walking in the road,” she said.

“We called various animal agencies but none were able to help so we had to call the police.”

Officers managed to round it up and bundle it into the back of the car with a blanket over its head, before taking it to a wildlife centre.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk eviction Action could be taken against parents whose children are launching fireworks in Canada Water, a meeting heard this week.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle chaired a meeting with Southwark police and a small group of community representatives to discuss the ongoing issue of antisocial behaviour.

Among the key antisocial issues plaguing residents is fireworks.

The council’s antisocial behaviour lead pledged stringent action against those responsible for launching the rockets.

“We will take action against those involved, or indeed their families if necessary,” said senior antisocial behaviour officer, Ken Dale.

Rotherhithe ward councillor, Kath Whittam, added: “Southwark Council are not afraid to evict people if they’re not behaving by their tenancy agreements.

“That’s happened in Rotherhithe, not on fireworks but on other things.”

The supply of fireworks is believed to be stemming from online purchases or from those older than eighteen giving fireworks to youngsters. Mr Dale told the meeting: “All of the premises have been visited, and we’re not aware of any premises breaching their legal responsibilities this year.”

Trading Standards officers will visit Southwark premises to check they are not selling projectiles to youngsters, he said.

He also added that Southwark had served five eviction notices on tenants for the most serious types of antisocial behaviour and crime in general since the ban was lifted six weeks ago.

According to Inspector Tom Cornish, of Southwark Police, a key ringleader of an initial group behind the fireworks attacks is due to attend a police station next week.

Those involved in the group of eight have been forced to sign ‘behaviour contracts’, a step before dishing out an ASBO. “It’s a small number setting of fireworks, some are providing an audience,” he said.

“They’re putting themselves in huge danger as well as members of the public.

“One boy we have identified for setting off the fireworks. He’s been grounded by his parents, he’s got no record of contact with the police.

“He’s coming in [to the station] on the 11th.”

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, the council’s public safety lead - who described herself as a “arrest first, ask questions later kind of person” - told the meeting that antisocial behaviour often flared up around this time of year but that council officers were putting extra resources into tackling the issue on key nights expecting to see a flare-up.

Mr Coyle urged residents to report incidents, as this often leads to extra resources or CCTV being available.

“I want to ram home one message: There’s been some discussion about using online forums to make political points,” he also said.

“There’s no politics, I want people to be safe wherever they live in Bermondsey and Old Southwark.”

However Liberal Democrat figures have told the News they are unhappy there were no Liberal Democrat figures at the invite-only meeting, while Labour councillors were.

The crux of the problem is that the “high voltage” and “low voltage” elements of the infrastructure need to be refurbished, and a secondary source of power in the event of a failure needs to be installed.

"It should be noted that this project is at a critical stage and that the refurbishment of electrical equipment should be completed urgently,” the report adds.

“As the current electrical network and switchgear is 20 years beyond its design life and the existing secondary supply can only power bridge lifts at half speed.”

The total cost of the works will be spread over three years, to 2023.

Under an 1885 Parliamentary Act, the Bridge House Trust which runs Tower Bridge is required to lift the bridge if given 24 hours’ notice by river vessels.

It takes eight minutes on average to complete the lift.

A large hunting knife has been seized by officers patrolling Rotherhithe after a spate of anti-social behaviour by youths launching fireworks at members of the public.

Cops in the Territorial Support Group – often used to police riots – have been deployed to the area to stop the teens terrorising locals with the fireworks.

Officers on patrol in Helena Street last Tuesday evening noticed two boys acting “suspiciously.”

Both attempted to run off, say police, but were stopped after a chase. Police say they saw one of them, aged sixteen, throw a knife under a car, which police later recovered. He was arrested at the scene.

Inspector Lee Barnes of the Territorial Support Group said: “In the last week, the community

of Rotherhithe have reached out to the Met following a number of worrying incidents where youngsters were recklessly playing with fireworks in the Canada Water area.

“This dangerous behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. My TSG unit was tasked to support local officers and to show a strong policing presence in the area.

“This arrest is a direct result of those patrols. I am really pleased to see that a potentially lethal knife has been taken off the streets.

“We will continue to work closely with the residents of Rotherhithe to take tough action against those who carry weapons or cause a blight to their local community.”

The 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon. He has since been released under investigation.

Unless £6 million is spent on the ageing landmark

In August, the bascules of the worldfamous landmark were lodged open, forcing officials to close the bridge and sparking heavy traffic around Bermondsey.

The Victorian-era bridge requires electrical work costing nearly £6 million to avoid repeats of the same problem, a City of London Corporation report states.

The report states: “The design team have warned that until the existing electrical infrastructure is replaced, it will continue to present an increasing likelihood of failure which will consequently continue to cause reputational damage and loss of income.”

Challenge to Canada Water Masterplan rejected

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A bid legally to challenge the Canada Water Masterplan has been thrown out by a High Court judge.

The masterplan, which covers a vast area of Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays, is among the largest planning projects granted in Southwark.

Residents had raised more than £25,000 for a judicial review of the approval for the controversial masterplan, over its impact on the environment and transport among other areas.

But last Thursday, a High Court judge refused permission for the challenge to proceed to a full judicial review.

“Unfortunately, the Judge agreed with the barristers for the council and for British Land that the council’s consideration of the impacts of the masterplan development was legally sufficient,” said the claimants in an update.

“Specifically, she agreed with the Council that the protections for open

spaces designated as ‘Metropolitan Open Land’ including Stave Hill Ecology Park and Russia Dock Woodland, do not take account of harm from developments that are bordering the land, only from development on the land itself.”

They are considering a possible application to the Court of Appeal. The project, by developer British Land, was

unanimously approved by a panel of councillors last year.

Former leader of the council, Cllr Peter John, welcomed the move. “It means we can focus on bringing more homes, more jobs and more leisure opportunities to Southwark,” he said.

The developer British Land has also said it welcomes the finding.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk McCaulay Junior UrugbeziEdwards' murderer has been jailed for nearly seventeen years after a 'deliberate and merciless' attack in Rockingham Estate last year.

Rashai Annang, (b.13.04.02) from Lewisham was sentenced on Friday, October 30, at Woolwich Crown Court, where he has handed sixteen years and 265 days' imprisonment after being found guilty of the murder. He was seventeen at the time of McCaulay's killing.

Paramedics found critically injured McCaulay in Tiverton Street at around half nine at night on May 5, 2019, after being alerted to a stabbing by paramedics. He died in hospital the same night.

Eighteen-year-old McCaulay had been chased through the streets by Annang - who was on a bicycle - before being stabbed.

The court heard that the pair had encountered each other coincidentally, and had a ‘very brief conversation’ before a ‘breakneck chase’ ensued with Annang cycling after McCaulay through Newington Gardens.

Annang caught up with McCaulay by a low wall, finding him in a position described as 'utterly defenceless', by the prosecution, and appeared to kick him while he was down.

He then stabbed him several times with force in an attack that the court heard was 'deliberate and merciless' before fleeing the scene and leaving his victim bleeding in the street. A postmortem examination recorded the cause of death as a stab wound to his left thigh.

Two days after the attack, Annang was tracked down by police to a hotel in Norwich.

Detective Sergeant Sarah Fisher, from the murder investigation team from the Met's Specialist Crime South, said: "This was a vicious unprovoked attack committed by Rashai Annang on McCaulay.

“CCTV shows how McCaulay was running for his life, being chased

by Rashai Annang on a push bike, resulting in McCaulay falling to the ground and Annang stabbing him to death.

“He has shown no remorse for his actions on that night.

"This is another tragic and unnecessary loss of a young life on the streets of London and I would ask communities to support officers as they do everything they can to stop another family suffering the pain of losing a loved one.”

serial paedophile admits over 40 offences

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A serial paedophile once convicted for assaulting a child in Southwark was jailed again Monday for offences against more than twenty children.

Sick Aaron McWilliams, 28, was already jailed in 2017 for faking references to work as a nanny in Bromley and sexually abusing a child.

At the time, he had been under a court order barring him from working with children unsupervised because he had sexually assaulted a child in Southwark.

Now McWilliams, of Belmarsh prison, has been further jailed after admitting more

than 40 offences against 24 children. The youngest was just four months old.

Police say they have identified many of the predator’s victims, but they can’t rule out there being more.

The case is among the most serious they have ever seen, said Detective Superintendent Adam Ghaboos of the Met’s Central East Safeguarding team.

On Monday, McWilliams was sentenced to life, to serve a minimum of nine years, for a string of child sexual abuse offences.

Woolwich Crown Court heard how the offences took place between 2012 and 2017, in different parts of the UK and Europe, with McWilliams abusing children he came into contact with as a live-in au pair.

The paedophile admitted more than 40 offences, including inciting boys under thirteen to engage in sexual activity and two counts of rape of a boy under thirteen.

A phone seized during the 2017 investigation uncovered nearly 2,500 indecent images of children, and videos of McWilliams abusing his victims.

“McWilliams is a predatory paedophile who sexually abused a large number of children he was entrusted to care for. It is every family’s worst nightmare,” said DSI Adam Ghaboos.

“He is manipulative, cold, calculating, and highly dangerous to children and young people. This case is amongst the most serious child abuse offending that the team

“Their information has led to this prosecution, and McWilliams will spend a long time in jail where he cannot harm any other children.”

Officers are continuing to appeal for families which may have employed McWilliams to contact them, as they cannot rule out there being more victims.

DSI Ghaboos added: “I would urge any families who have employed McWilliams or believe that he may have had contact with their children to come forward.”

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Housing campaigners staged a protest outside Notting Hill Genesis’ Peckham Place development on Saturday, calling for empty homes to be requisitioned by Southwark Council.

Peckham Place is the redevelopment of the former local authority Wood Dene block, whose 323 homes were demolished in 2006. The new site was only completed last year.

The development includes 54 units at ‘affordable rent’, that is anything up to 80 per cent of market rent, 201 for shared ownership, and 78 for private purchase. At least 38 homes are still listed for sale. £440,000 is the price tag for a single-bed flat.

People Before Profit, and Southwark Defend Council Housing organised the weekend’s protest, which has been backed by a coalition of groups including Southwark Group of Tenants Organisations, Southwark Travellers Action Group, Rodney TRA, Alvey TRA and Southwark Law Centre.

The group say the pandemic has shown just how deadly overcrowding and housing shortages can be - leaving people unable to self-isolate properly.

Tanya Murat, Southwark Defend Council Housing’s chair, called for the council to step in and requisition the flats, describing Peckham Place as like a ‘ghost town’.

A petition, also calling for an immediate end to estate demolitions, had gained more than 700 signatures

by Tuesday.

Campaigners have taken particular aim at the ‘bail-out’ given to Notting Hill

Genesis (NHG) over the beleaguered Aylesbury Estate regeneration.

In July, the News reported that a landmark deal had been reached between Tooley Street and NHG, whereby the local authority would pay £193 million to buy 280 homes planned for Aylesbury’s ‘package A’ site, slated for completion in March 2012, for social housing.

Under previous terms these would have been sold privately or let for ‘intermediate’ rent, but the council was able to take over the ownership due to changes to its borrowing cap and City Hall funding from Sadiq Khan.

But campaigners have pointed out that despite more social homes being good news, it comes at a huge cost to the taxpayer and benefit to NHG. Ms Murat told the News last week: “On the Aylesbury Estate Southwark Council has thrown hundreds of millions at the so called "regeneration", bailing out Notting Hill Genesis.

“But NHG is a developer not a housing association, and it would rather have homes lying empty than rent them out to local people at council rents.

“Instead of supporting NHG, Southwark Council should requisition these empty homes to house council tenants.”

Both the council and NHG have denied ‘bail out’ claims - saying the Aylesbury build was on track before the agreement was reached.

Along with contending with escalating buying prices and spiralling rents, the number of properties being marketed as luxury AirBnBs across Southwark is also reducing supply.

Around Elephant and Castle there are at least 40 AirBnB flats including

on the site of the demolished Heygate and other former council homes - a problem campaigners fear could arise in Peckham Place.

In a response to the News’ request for comment, a Notting Hill Genesis spokesperson said: “There are many residents and families already enjoying the homes and growing community at our Peckham Place development.

“Our social homes are already fully occupied and we have welcomed former Wood Dene Estate residents who wished to return, as well as residents of the nearby Aylesbury Estate.

"The private sale and shared ownership homes that are on the market are proving popular and we are making good progress towards full occupancy.

“There are still a number of homes that have not yet gone to market but when that happens we expect them to prove very attractive too.”

Southwark Council did not respond to our request for comment before going to press.

Southwark Council has put forward proposals to build new homes on the site of twelve garages by Reynolds Road, currently used by businesses and residents, and land at the corner of Stuart Road and Cheltenham Road - including the estate’s former TRA Hall.

Southwark Council says it could build a total of nine new homes - all at social rent - which could be completed as early as summer 2023 pending on submitting and being granted planning approval. It also says it would find another location’ for Little Village, a Lottery funded project donating baby and children’s items for families in need currently based in the hall, all while protecting green spaces.

A project group, involving residents, was held in June and has helped create a brief for architects’ to develop the first suggested designs.

Residents’ requests included: improved or increased shared outside space, ‘doorstep play’, better recycling facilities, bike storage, balcony box repairs for a food growing scheme, more planting, good lighting, and electric car charging.

In September we reported that a group of residents had split from Rye Hill TRA and formed a new Priory Court residents’ association to object to the scheme, protesting against the loss of green space, with Abel Nwanokwai selected as chair.

A first meeting had more than 30 out of the block’s 75 residents in attendance worried about loss of light, space, and the impact on congestion and tradespeople who use garages for storage, with meetings continuing each week as they ramp up the campaign saying the council is ‘racing ahead’ with the plans.

One attendee, Siobhan McCarthy, told the News last week: “There has been a barely existent consultation process with residents and surrounding neighbours.

“We feel as if the council is trying to sneak this proposal through. And all for just nine flats.”

Another resident said she had written to her ward councillors three times highlighting concerns but has yet to receive a reply.

The News understands businesses to use the garages include two gardeners, two chimney sweeps, an events business, and a carpenter.

They say they have received no notice of the planned demolition and have not been invited to take part in the consultation.

The garages are also seen as one of the only safe storage sites for motorbikes- with a string of thefts and attempted thefts taking place in the estate.

Infill housing - building on ‘underused’ or ‘spare’ land identified in existing estates, and rooftop developments on existing blocks - are some of the novel ways the council hopes to work around land shortages to achieve its target of 11,000 new council homes by 2043.

Southwark Council’s housing cabinet member, Leo Pollak, said he was keen to work with Priory Court’s community to find the best way forward.

“We’re at a very early stage of consultation with residents to build new council homes and alleviate overcrowding on the estate and in the immediate area, as well as make improvements to the estate based on residents’ priorities,” he said.

“With housing in Nunhead becoming more expensive it’s imperative we work with residents to bring forward projects that preserve the area as a genuine mixed community.

“Myself and ward councillors have met with residents over the past few days and held the first of many drop-ins attended by 26 people – it’s clear that most residents want to see existing green spaces protected and enhanced, and are keen to work with the council and architects to find the best solutions.

“Residents are already writing the brief that the architect works towards so I’m confident that any proposals that come forward will authentically reflect the needs and interests of Priory Court residents.”

Petition to close schools in lockdown gathers pace

As of Tuesday evening, the total cases recorded since March had reached 3,554, with 42 new positive tests confirmed within the latest 24 hours.

The steepest rise in infections has been since the end of September, when the borough still had under 2,000 cases in total.

How much of this growth is to do with testing capacity now, compared to the first stage of the outbreak, is unclear - but what is good news is that cases are showing early signs of decelerating.

Whereas the London-wide R rate was believed to be as high as three just two weeks ago, the latest data available points to it dropping back to 1.1 to 1.3.

The reproduction rate is roughly the number of people a person with the virus goes on to infect.

It would appear that warnings that London was seeing a surge in cases, and last week’s lockdown debates, had an impact.

15Oct This is not to say cases are low - 434 new infections were recorded in the week up to October 27 in Southwark - but it is a figure which has remained steady compared to the previous seven days, which saw 423 cases.

This is a huge jump from early October, when weekly cases suddenly doubled. Hopefully it shows the outbreak is not spiralling as seen in other regions.

Across the UK the daily death toll was 397 on Tuesday. It now seems likely that deaths will surpass 50,000 across the nation. So far 47,250 people have died within 28 days of returning a positive test in the UK. Around 60,000 have had COVID-19 listed as the cause or as a contributing factor on their death certificates Scientists have warned the death toll could reach 85,000 - a once unthinkable figure.

It is hoped the new lockdown will protect London from accelerating toward the picture in the north and midlands throughout winter and the flu season.

Currently, around 140 people a day are being admitted to London hospitals, with 990 in-hospital patients as of Tuesday though, as we report on page 11, our NHS is far less stretched than in other regions.

Southwark Council’s leader has pledged the local authority will ‘do everything we can’ to support residents during lockdown round two.

The community hub is continuing its activities, and the council continues urging people who need help or know someone who does to get in touch.

Councillor Kieron Williams said: “I know how worried many residents will be about these restrictions.

“Some will be worried about the financial impact on their families, while others will fear loneliness and isolation.

“I can’t pretend it will be easy, but I can promise you that the council will do everything we can to support all our residents through this challenging time.

“I would also ask that everyone who can, looks out for their neighbours and offers support, just like we all did in the first lockdown.

“In the spring, the outpouring of community spirit in our borough was incredible and humbling, and I know we will all look out for each other again.”

COVID-HIT home gets ‘good’ rating

A campaign to close schools that is backed by a Southwark councillor and primary school teacher is gathering support.

Teachers and parents are divided over the decision to keep schools open during the second lockdown, with many angry that the government did not take the opportunity to impose a ‘circuit-breaker’ during half-term.

Camberwell councillor James McAsh (Labour) was supportive of a half-term circuit-breaker - like all Southwark’s MPs - and says closing schools in term time has to be an absolute last resort.

Keeping schools open is a trade-off between combatting the virus more quickly, and protecting children’s education. But missing the opportunity in half-term to take action has left the country with no choice, McAsh says.

“Education workplaces are some of the most highly infected,” he explains.

“And yet we have zero protection, no PPE, no social distancing, no priority for testing.

“We want to do our bit. But the government must support us. Put schools in the lockdown, control the virus, and invest in school safety.”

The latest figures from the ONS estimate that one per cent of primary pupils and two per cent of secondary pupils have the virus.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A coronavirus-hit Bermondsey care home has been awarded a ‘Good’ rating in its latest inspection.

Tower Bridge Care Home had been on the front-line of the Covid epidemic in Southwark care homes, recording more than half of the borough’s death toll as of July, with 34 deaths.

The home provider, HC-One, told the News it was difficult to battle the outbreak because a lack of testing made it impossible to know who had Covid and who didn’t.

The care home watchdog has now rated the home ‘Good’, a result which manager Christen San Pedro called “testament to the hard work and kind care that each and every member of the team puts in, day in day out.”

In a report, inspectors rated the home ‘Good’ in all of the categories inspected.

“Staff had been able to manage and

closure after finding that virus levels are now nine times higher amongst primary pupils and 50 times higher amongst secondary pupils.

More than 380,000 people have signed a petition calling on parliament to act.

Head teachers, however, have cautiously welcomed the decision to keep education open throughout the next lockdown.

The National Association of Head Teachers’ general secretary Nick Brook said the union was concerned about ‘ambiguity’ over shielding and rights at work.

“It is right to prioritise keeping pupils in school,” he explained. “No-one is more committed to ensuring that children do not lose out during this time than those that have dedicated their working lives to education.

“Neither though does anyone want to see pupils or staff put in harm’s way.

“We are calling on the government to provide complete transparency on the risks to children, families and school staff of keeping all pupils in school, and to give clear guidance on what additional measures schools may have to take in order to keep everyone safe.

“We are particularly concerned that, once again, there is considerable ambiguity about whether it is safe for those who are clinically vulnerable or extremely vulnerable to continue to work in a school.”

“A health and social care professional we spoke with praised the resilience and dedication of the staff Tower Bridge Care Centre team and felt the leadership of the home had been crucial in how the home had coped, especially during the peak of the pandemic.”

The home’s staff were also praised for ensuring access to video calls for residents, so that they did not get lonely when relatives could not visit.

At the time of the inspection in August, socially distanced visits were being allowed, but at set times and with limited numbers to prevent infection.

The managing director of HC-One, James Ilesanmi, praised the report, and said: “I would like to thank the whole team for their commitment and hard work and congratulate them on such an impressive report.”

The hospitals say they are facing an “extraordinary challenge” to meet the demands both of a second Covid wave, along with normal winter pressures.

Officers say they attended eleven breaches of the Covid regulations on Saturday.

One was on the South Bank, and the other two at The Arches, and Newport Street, SE1.

Police were also forced to attend a gathering in the Apollo Business Centre near Surrey Canal Road, Deptford, and another illegal congregation in Ruskin Park near Herne Hill.

The Met’s Commander Ade Adelekan said: “If you think the next few days are an excuse to break the rules, think again. You will get caught, we will take action and impose the maximum sanctions.

“Not only are UMEs [unlicensed music events] unsafe for many reasons but they brazenly disregard the current Covid-19 restrictions. As well as music events there were numerous gatherings

“The majority of the public have had to make sacrifices during this time, we will not let those who think they are above the law get away with this selfish behaviour.”

Among the events police attended on Saturday outside Southwark included a rave in Poplar, which 1,000 people were at.

Seven people were arrested under the coronavirus regulations for holding or being involved in the holding of the event and will be liable for a £10,000 fixed penalty notice each.

And in another case, police were forced to issue a £10,000 fine to a person at a christening celebration in Tottenham.

“I hope the arrests and subsequent fines these individuals are likely to receive send a clear message to those who intend to flout the rules,” added Commander Adelekan.

“We are still in a pandemic and it is extremely selfish of the small minority of people to carry on without regard for the regulations.

“The restrictions are in place for an important reason, to keep everyone safe."

Officials also fear the additional impact of a potential ‘no deal’ exit from the European Union, when transition arrangements end from January 1.

If a trade deal is not struck, there is a risk of delays at the border to imported goods.

Since coronavirus, “the trust has very little updated guidance or communication on the progress on trade deals during the transition period,” said chief operating officer, Jon Findlay.

The hospitals have only been sent one letter from the Health and Social Care Department since the transition period began, he said.

“The resulting impacts of the pandemic response has raised some concerns with regards to availability of consumables, spare parts for equipment and some medicines,” he told the Trust’s board on Wednesday.

Southwark developed its own local test and trace operation which went live this month, amid frustration that the national system was not reaching everyone’s coronavirus contacts.

Southwark Council’s call centre staff are also being drafted in to boost the seven-day test and trace operation.

As of last week, council officials have also begun using text messages to try to reach the close contacts of confirmed cases, states a report to the Southwark branch of the CCG. “NHS Test & Trace enables us to monitor the spread of COVID-19 through the testing of suspected cases and tracing of recent close contacts,” states the report.

“As at 27 October, 1,877 local cases and 4,673 contacts have been identified.”

The local system has been hailed as “significantly” increasing the number of successfully tracked and completed cases.

But it has been hit with a number of problems, the report reveals.

printworks gets no funding The major music venue is now calling for review

The club says it is confused at not receiving support from the Arts Council’s Cultural Recovery Fund, a £500m bailout fund for businesses in the arts severely impacted by Covid.

To be eligible, businesses have to have been viable before coronavirus, and were at risk of imminent closure because of the pandemic.

The popular venue, on the site of the former Daily Mail printing operation in Harmsworth Quay, is now calling for the decision to be “urgently reviewed.”

“As many of you are aware, Printworks’ application for the recent round of the CRF which also included other Broadwick Live venues (including The Drumsheds

London, Exhibition London and Depot Mayfield in Manchester) was unsuccessful,” said the venue in a statement.

“We pride ourselves on being a brand that upholds the importance of music and culture in the lives of so many.

“For the past four years, Printworks has provided a platform for countless artists, both established and emerging, bringing unforgettable experiences to the thousands of

music fans we have had the pleasure of inviting through our doors.”

Printworks sold tickets across 54 countries last year, the venue added, calling itself “home to some of the country’s standout moments in dance music culture.”

In May, Printworks had applied to the council for a capacity increase to be allowed to hold even bigger events post-lockdown.

However, nightclubs are still barred from operating.

Covid patients requiring the most serious treatment on a critical care ward.

Another twelve patients with the illness were being treated in general and acute wards as of October 22.

It is the latest sign of a second wave in Southwark, with new cases to 434 in the week to October 23.

“As well as preparing for the seasonal demands we expect over the coming winter months, the extraordinary challenge this year will be the combination of the usual ‘winter pressures’ and the uncertainty of how the COVID 19 second wave will impact our services and staff,” said top hospital boss Professor Ian Abbs.

He added: “It is clear that as a Trust, a health system and as a nation the next few months will place additional challenges on our journey to recovery.”

Local Covid contact tracers will begin knocking on Southwark residents doors early this month.

The national system has been handing over “inappropriate” cases to the Southwark team. Delays are also impacting performance.

The national team is supposed to hand over cases within 24 hours if they have not made contact. The average time between a person testing positive in Southwark and the case being handed over to local teams for tracing is actually 5.7 days.

“Contact tracing has been impacted by errors in the national testing programme,” say senior public health officials.

“We have also raised data quality problems with the national PHE Team which may be impacting our results.”

A million south-east Londoners are in line for the coronavirus vaccine when it is available, the report also states.

Under current plans, 1,006,000 people living in south-east London will need the vaccine.

“We know that the Covid vaccine will only be available in small quantities, currently expected no earlier than 1st December,” says Jessica Arnold, Director of Flu and Covid Vaccinations at the CCG. First priority will be given to care home residents and staff, and then to those who are over the age of eighty.

congestion charge expansion PROPOSAL abandoned AFTER GOVERNMENT’S bailout

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A proposal to extend the Congestion Charge zone to cover large parts of Southwark has been abandoned.

Mayor Sadiq Khan had accused the government of attempting to force the condition on TfL in exchange for a bailout.

It would’ve seen the zone extended to the north and south circular roads, covering large parts of Southwark such as Peckham, Camberwell and Dulwich.

A funding agreement was reached with the Government on Sunday for £1.8bn, and the Congestion Charge will not be expanded as part of it. The fee is still likely to remain at £15, however, “subject to consultation.”

“This is not a perfect deal, but we

fought hard to get to the best possible place,” said Mayor Khan.

“The only reason TfL needs Government support is because almost all our fares income has dried up since March as Londoners have done the right thing.”

Free travel for teenagers has also been kept, as well as for the over-sixties, after a fierce backlash against proposals to scrap them.

But the deal, which means TfL can keep running services until March 2021, depends on Londoners contributing extra money further down the line.

The Mayor’s office says it is looking at an increase in council tax to plug the gap.

TfL also will have to find £160m in savings or extra income, including lower capital spending – meaning less money to go around for infrastructure

Specially-adapted motorcycle stolen from TV presenter

On Tuesday, October 24, Sophie Morgan tweeted: “My Ryker was stolen in south London yesterday, I’m so upset.

“It’s been modified specially for my disability (hand-brake system) and is very distinctive.

“It’s a long shot but please share this in the small hope that if someone sees it and reports it - I might get her back.

Thank you.”

“The Conservative Government has sought to punish Londoners who are already struggling, while the Mayor of London has proven himself to be a weak negotiator.”

She added that it was wrong to claim free travel for the under-eighteens had been “saved” as the issue could come to the table again when the funding deal expires in March.

Peckham Rye Park shut for controlled explosion

Builders came across the device at 10.25am on Thursday, October 29.

The area was quickly cordoned off as police conducted a controlled explosion.

Police reopened the site and park later that afternoon.

Call for bishop to resign over cat

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A controversial animal rights charity has called on a bishop to resign – because he does not think Southwark Cathedral should have had a funeral for their cat.

The Cathedral held a memorial service for their beloved moggy, Doorkins Magnificat, last week.

But among a minority voicing displeasure at the move was the Bishop of Burnley, Philip North.

“Is this a joke?” he asked. “I do hope so.

If not it’s grossly insensitive to bereaved families and those ministering to them in the NW under the regional Coronavirus restrictions.”

PETA, an animal rights lobby group, has now waded into the row, by writing

to the Archbishop of Canterbury, the top bishop in the Church of England over the comment.

They say Doorkins, a stray who made Southwark Cathedral her home, “was no less a parishioner because she had four legs rather than two.”

Their letter states: “How can he possibly think, much less say, such a thing?

A Peckham care home chef has triumphed in the 'care home chef of the year' competition.

Joan Richards, from Anchor’s Waterside’s care home in Summer Road, was announced the winner of the Outstanding Achievement Award in the Anchor Hanover Chef of the Year competition. Voted by care home staff across the country, entrants for the awards were judged on their inventiveness in the kitchen and engagement with residents.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” Joan said of the accolade.

CoVID patient on his bike for king’s A man who was admitted to King’s College Hospital during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic has set up a fundraiser to support its ‘truly amazing’ staff.

In June, Barry Washington was hospitalised for nearly a week with a severe infection.

“The doctors, nurses , cleaners, catering staff, porters, other support and specialists who looked after me were truly amazing,” he says.

“I will always remember their commitment, sacrifice and their positive attitude.

“It is this dedication that truly brought home to me what heroes the NHS Team really are, and it’s also for this reason I choose to support their charity.

King’s doctor get top accolade in US

On its GoFundMe page, the Camberwell Primary’s staff explain: “We are fundraising this amount to buy Chromebooks for our school so that children can have access to our online learning platform at home, if they are unwell, isolating or in the case of school closure.

“So many children have fallen behind as a result of lockdown and we are doing whatever we can to fill those learning gaps.

“We use an online learning platform called ClassDojo. Our teachers set and mark exciting learning, share good news and communicate with parents and carers using this.

“But some families unfortunately do not have access to a device at home and do not have funds to buy one.

“We too as a school are working on

a limited budget and need all the help we can get.

A top fetal medicine doctor from King’s College Hospital has received one of the highest honours in his field.

Kypros Nicolaides has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine in the USA. The accolade recognises individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.

Professor Nicolaides was recognised for his work ‘improving the care of pregnant women worldwide with pioneering rigorous and creative approaches, and making seminal contributions to prenatal diagnosis and every major obstetrical disorder’.

“It is an incredible honour to be elected to the USA National Academy of Medicine for my work in fetal medicine," he said, reacting to the news.

“I hope to continue to advance the care provided to women and unborn babies both locally at King’s and around the globe.”

More than 10,000 patients are cared for by his department at King’s College Hospital each year.

Following the announcement of a further national lockdown, patients and their families are being reassured that there are extensive measures in place to keep them safe when attending the hospital and its community sites.

The measures include requesting all staff and visitors sanitise their hands on entering the building and follow government advice on wearing face coverings.

More frequent cleaning is in place and rooms and equipment are thoroughly cleaned between appointments. Only one parent or carer can accompany a child to their appointment and there are gaps between appointments and fewer clinics running at the same time to limit the number of people in the building.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, which includes Evelina London, has also launched a ‘Stay Safe, Keep Apart’ campaign with signs around the sites guiding patients where to wait and queue safely to maintain social distancing.

Craig Ravenhill, 31, from Doncaster in Yorkshire, has been attending appointments at Evelina London with his eight-year-oldson, Dylan, who has a rare kidney condition. Dylan attends the hospital twice a week to take part in a clinical trial.

Craig said: “I feel very reassured by the changes the hospital has made.

The hospital feels very ordered and calm and everyone is very good at keeping their distance. The signs explaining where you stand are very clear and helpful. It’s very easy to navigate and staff are on hand to show people where to go.”

Boris: Londoners need more T he disastrous failure of the government’s test, trace and isolate system and their dither and delay leaves us with little choice, but to go into a second lockdown.

With the winter beginning to bite and the days getting shorter, this will be a tough time for our community, but we will get through it by coming together and sticking to the rules.

The chancellor’s decision to extend the furlough scheme was welcome, but long overdue. He must now confirm the details of what further support will be made available to businesses and venues about to close their shutters once more, so they can plan ahead and survive through the Christmas period.

It has been great to see the chancellor lift the self-employment income support scheme to 80 per cent of profits, but all of these helpful measures are being announced in a piecemeal way which have impacted the ability of business leaders to plan ahead.

Londoners on lower incomes will be also worried about what the latest

lockdown means for their finances.

We must see the boost to Universal Credit made permanent and for the suspension of the minimum income floor to be kept in place.

In more positive news, I was delighted to see the government recently come to its senses and drop its proposals to extend the congestion charge to the North and South circulars and remove free travel concessions for under 18s and older Londoners.

This was down to the campaigning efforts of not just City Hall, but also charities, business leaders and Londoners.

Transport for London have now received further emergency funding from the government, but this will only last until April.

As we enter a second lockdown, what we should have seen was Ministers agreeing to a long-term and sustainable financial package for London’s transport services. This would help to boost the economic recovery of our capital, and indeed the whole country, whilst securing the future of key transport infrastructure projects,

such as the Bakerloo Line extension.

The transport secretary says he can’t give TfL a ‘blank cheque’ to cover the whole scale of its financial challenges, but he gave an eighteenmonth blank cheque to private train companies at the start of the pandemic.

Instead, ministers expect already hard-pressed Londoners to pick up the tab for some of the remaining funding gaps TfL continues to grapple with.

During the first lockdown, TfL lost 90 per cent of its fares revenue and with passenger numbers remaining low, it many faces obstacles going forward.

Before Covid-19 hit, we know that Sadiq Khan had reduced the operating deficit at TfL, that Boris Johnson passed onto him by 71 per cent, and had increased its cash balances by 13 per cent. This is despite the fact that in 2018, the Government cancelled the £700m annual operating grant that it used to give to TfL. If the government continues to shortchange transport services in London, it is essentially punishing Londoners for doing the right thing and staying away from public transport where possible.

es, dear reader, it’s that time of the month again.

Time for my monthly column to entertain and outrage you….and what a month it’s been.

We’ve had Marcus Rashford show the Government up over school meal vouchers for half-term. Who’d have thought that a Premier League footballer would prove to be a better leader than Boris Johnson (actually hang on, that’s probably not that hard)? I was very pleased when Southwark Council announced that, even if the Government wouldn’t, the council would be covering the cost of meal vouchers for Southwark families. A society shows its true values by how it looks after its own - especially those most in need.

We’ve had kids riding round on bikes across Bermondsey, Rotherhithe and Surrey Docks, literally launching fireworks at people.

We’ve had the residents of Dulwich deliver nearly 2,500 signatures on a petition asking the Council to

reconsider the design of the ‘COVID road closures’ (aka LTNs) because, whilst the fortunate 'few' living on the newly closed streets are enjoying pollution free air now, the 'many' living on the other streets taking the significant additional traffic burden are more polluted than ever and suffering vastly increased congestion at various different times of day.…..guess what? The council completely ignored the petition.

What to do about it all? Well, here are some things: When kids on bikes try to steal your phone and set a firework off at you I’m pleased that the Met have deployed the Territorial Support Group to the Bermondsey area. I hope to hear news of some arrests. It is also a reminder of what happens when the council decides to cut youth services by 50% - bored kids get into mischief and things quickly escalate.

As Liberal Democrats, we have always known the value of proper youth provision and as we face a possible COVID induced recession,

it will be vital for the council to maintain funding for Youth Services When thousands of local residents sign a petition, and the council, as usual ignores them What’s the point of petitions if they never change anything? This Labourled council should be willing to listen to its residents and when enough of them raise an issue, they should be properly listened to. The views of local residents need to be respected and Liberal Democrat councillors across Southwark will always fight hard to ensure residents’ voices are heard. We call on Labour to do proper transport studies on traffic change impacts including air quality and fix what is broke when residents tell them instead of ignoring.

Oh, and because I always like to say something that we can all do, don’t forget, Remembrance Sunday is not far off, so buy a poppy if you can.

Thousands of brave Southwark hearts never came back from war. The least we can do is respect their sacrifice.

Southwark churches anger at lockdown rules Politicians imposing a lockdown today for a month have earned themselves a stern rebuke from senior church figures in the Southwark diocese.

Bishops are unhappy at restrictions imposed upon services under the lockdown, because they bar group worship.

The Bishop of Southwark, Christopher Chessun, has written to clergy to ask them to pressure MPs to exempt group worship, while Archbishop John Wilson has also written to figures in the Catholic church to do the same.

While accepting the need for lockdown, Rt Rev Chessun said: “The Church is not a branch of the leisure or hospitality industries with a tap that can be turned on and off by politicians at will.”

He has pledged to work closely with fellow bishops to “hold the government to account” over their decision.

‘Stop sneezing in my face’ says Dulwich peer

A Dulwich peer has bemoaned inconsiderate people who cough or sneeze in other people’s faces - and asked the government to

give these people tips to stop doing it.

Baron McColl of Dulwich, a former surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’, made the complaint in a recent Lord’s debate.

“As far as coughing and sneezing is concerned, I noticed they turn their head to the right or to the left, which ensures that the content of a cough or a sneeze goes straight into the face of the person opposite,” he complained.

Is this a rare case of a politician truly speaking up for people’s concerns?

John Boyega’s ‘honest conversations’ with Disney

Peckham’s John Boyega has told of his “honest conversations” with Disney for sidelining black characters in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

The star has been outspoken in his criticism of Disney for sidelining his character while giving more prominent storylines to his white colleagues.

Now he hopes speaking out to Disney about racial inequality will help others.

“They gave me a chance also to explain what my experience was like,” he told the Hollywood Reporter.

I hope that the conversation is not such a taboo or elephant in the room now, because someone just came and said it.”

Schools need help as they remain open in lockdown

I

n some good news the latest figures indicate that the steep rise in new COVID-19 cases in Southwark is slowing down.

The number of weekly cases has not shown the same sharp trend upwards - previously almost doubling in the first few weeks of October.

It also appears that the R number has dropped once more, hovering above one. Again, if sustained this would level new cases.

Although hospitals in London are currently well placed to respond to the toll of the virus, this will not be the case unless this early progress continues well beyond the next few weeks and we see a much sharper drop in cases. It is also not the case in other regions of the UK, where hospitals are close to being overwhelmed.

The announcement of the second lockdown will, no doubt, have been met with frustration from those in favour and against alike.

Many are united in believing that we collectively missed our chance to get a quick handle on the virus when the government rejected a half-term circuit breaker.

Data shows that schools are one key source of transmission. Keeping schools open, most would agree, is the right thing to do. But it

comes with great risk to staff and families; that is as true in Southwark as it is anywhere else.

Figures showing just how prevalent the virus is are very worrying- especially given the ongoing difficulties presented by learning from home.

Now, in the next lockdown, we are asking even more of our teachers, despite ongoing PPE issues, lack of laptops for home learning, and a lack of clarity around the risks presented and what support is available for staff who are particularly vulnerable.

Following the rules now - and maintaining the first signs of progress - will be even more important to protect all our key workers, including those working in environments where social distancing is just not possible.

Comber Grove primary is one of those still let down by a lack of support for its most disadvantaged pupils. Months after the peak of the pandemic it is still without the resources it needs and is desperately trying to raise enough money to buy laptops for unwell, quarantining or self-isolating pupils. It simply isn’t right that the school has these added financial worries on top of trying to keep everyone safe when most people will be working from home out of harm’s way. Showbiz and the Blitz

The Bermondsey girl who only left after her childhood home was hit by a V1 rocket The 1930s must have been the halcyon days for local kids when compared with what came at the end of that decade, writes Michael Holland...

Brenda Watkinson’s dad’s family came from East Anglia to Layard Road to work in the docks, and her mum lived in Camilla Road. When her parents married they moved to 11 Raymouth Road, where Brenda was born in 1937. The family lived there until 1944 when a V1 rocket pretty much demolished the whole street. “We were made homeless overnight,” Brenda remembers, with anger still perceptible in her voice.

The council put the family up in Credon Road School, which had been commandeered for these situations, where they spent a week sleeping on the floor before being evacuated to Woking. After a terrible time there, a move to stay with family in Norfolk came next before returning to a condemned house in Delaford Road when her father, who had stayed in London as a firefighter, had convinced the authorities that he wanted the family back together. “We stayed there from 1945 to 1948 before moving to Millstream House in Jamaica Road,” Brenda says.

Brenda’s mum had worked in the local leather and food industries. “She went from making pistol holsters for the cavalry to being a butcher,” jokes Brenda. “Dad worked in Carter’s, the gentlemen’s outfitters down The Blue, before the war, and afterwards stayed with the fire service until he was 73.”

The Blitz meant that Brenda only briefly attended Galleywall Road School before she was shipped out to Norfolk and a school in Diss for a while.

Her childhood was marred by war. “We were endlessly being bombed so there was little time for play,” she recalls.

“But I do remember hopscotch and skipping… I had a tricycle that I could ride as far as the Raymouth Tavern and back; it made a lot of noise as it didn’t have any tyres. We also used to play on top of the Anderson Shelter in the garden and on the bomb site in Aspinden Road.” She laughs before relating how, when all the neighbours were in the railway arch sheltering from the Luftwaffe, she would sing and dance to her captive audience. “I always wanted to be on the stage, and from the age of eight I began writing letters to Hollywood!”

After Germany surrendered, Brenda took her 11 Plus and went to Aylwin Grammar School where she passed her O Levels, but ill health stopped her going on to university.

There was little money for family holidays after the war and it wasn’t

until the 1950s that holidays became an annual affair for the Watkinsons.

“We always went to Clacton,” Brenda recalls.

Work for the school leaver was as a typist at Lloyd’s of London, where she worked for three different firms in 11 years. In 1964, while walking down the Strand, Brenda saw an ad for a Television Scriptwriting School. With her interest in entertaining triggered she applied and got the job, but it was not what she expected. “It was a mail order company run by an alcoholic boss who just sent lessons out by post!”

After four months of hell Brenda was seeking work again, and her next post was as a typist in the Temple, where she worked at several chambers in her time there. “I absolutely loved the Temple,” she says: “I loved the work, I loved the place; I was never happier than when I was working there.”

In 1977, Brenda left the Temple to care for her mother, whose health was deteriorating. “My plan was to work from home, so I advertised my typing skills across London. I began with medical students who needed work typed up, and the local GP, Dr Gammon, who was writing a book about the NHS.” She also took on part-time secretarial work with Jerry Epstein to help with his Chaplin tome, through whom she got a small part in Richard Attenborough’s film, Chaplin, followed by work with Steven Berkoff - two men very much connected with theatre and film.

Brenda worked with Berkoff for five years typing up his plays and his autobiography from her home. This ended when Berkoff extended his Limehouse warehouse to include office space for Brenda, which she declined as she needed the peace and solitude of her home in Jamaica Road. “He was very annoyed and very upset but I had to leave him,” she says.

Brenda retired in the mid-90s and now fills her time being a member of different clubs and societies, including “the Cinema Theatre Association, which is about the actual buildings rather than films, the London Bubble

I always wanted to be on the stage, and from the age of eight I began writing letters to Hollywood!

Brenda Watkinson Theatre, where I have performed in some of their plays; the Rotherhithe and Bermondsey Local History Society, for whom I sometimes give talks on local history, and the Blinking Buzzards, which is the UK Buster Keaton Society… my interests are wide and varied.”

Brenda has always been active and says she would still be active if “my blasted driving licence hadn’t been taken away!” Now deemed disabled, she feels like “a prisoner” in the home she has lived in for 72 years and relies on friends to take her out but her mind is as active as it always was, and she will continue to give talks on local history.

The sides drew 1-1 after normal time. Callum Peck put the hosts in front in the fifth minute before Ajay Ashanike's side levelled through Avelin Cedric Nganga with eighteen minutes left.

Peter Ojemen missed his side's decisive penalty as the hosts went through.

Meanwhile, due to the UK Government’s announcement of new Covid-19 restrictions (subject to a House of Commons vote on Wednesday), SCEFL fixtures, as well as clubs' training sessions, were set to be suspended between November 5 to December 2.

In a statemwent, the SCEFL said: "Our aim is to ensure that the 202021 season is completed at these levels and we will liaise with the relevant leagues in the NLS and WFP and the County Football Associations [CFAs] to provide support and establish appropriate options to do so if required.

"The UK Government has confirmed that school sport can continue as an exemption during this period.

"Re-starting football at these levels has taken substantial determination and commitment from stakeholders across the game and we would like to thank everyone for their vital contributions. However, health and wellbeing remain the priority, so it is extremely important that clubs, players, coaches, match officials, league officials, volunteers, parents, carers and facility providers adhere to the UK Government’s new national Covid-19 restrictions during this period.

"We remain in dialogue with the DCMS, leagues, competitions and CFAs and will provide further clarification for ‘non-elite’ football in England following the debate in the House of Commons [on Wednesday]."

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk A RECORD-breaking crowd of 586 saw Dulwich Hamlet Women defeat Datford 3-2 at Champion Hill last weekend as supporters were set to be denied live football for another month with the latest government restrictions.

After a busy summer followed by his exploits for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, Sam Curran has only been selected for the T20 part of the tour and will return home to rest after the third T20 on December 1.

Tom Curran, Roy and Topley will stay with the squad for the full trip including the three ODIs, which conclude at the iconic Newlands ground in Cape Town on December 9.

The visitors went ahead in the ninth minute when Nicha Dyett fired past Hamlet goalkeeper Kate Aldridge.

Katie Butts was a reat threat for Dartford and the away side doubled their lead when Shauni Griffiths finished in the seventeenth minute.

Dulwich brought on Ceylon Hickman in the 27th minute to shore up their defence, Dulwich pulled a goal back in spectacular fashion, Havana McElvaine firing home from a 30-tard free-kick after she had been fouled by Joanne Woodgates.

level through Brit Saylor.

The Hamlet dominated the second half and got their reward through Ali Rowe's shot sixteen minutes from time.

Dulwich summed up the feeling on their official website ahead of yet another suspension of football: "Supporters showed up when it counted, to support their club and their local community.

By Simeon Wright sport@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET chairman Ben Clasper has revealed to Southwark News his frustrations about the distribution of the National League bailout package - which was supposed to be “focused on gate receipts”.

Five National League North and South clubs have received £36,000, with the rest getting £30,000 a month. But Clasper, along with some of the division’s other chairs, including Maidstone United co-owner Terry Casey, believes that the split is totally unfair, claiming some clubs are effectively receiving “free money”.

Speaking during the Hamlet’s 0-0 draw against Chelmsford City last Saturday, Clasper said the money should have been allocated “the way the government told everybody it would be split, which is that it would be absolutely focused on gate receipts. [That is], if you get 2,000 people, you should be getting more money than someone who gets 200 people. But, for some reason, they’ve decided not to honour the government instructions.

“The announcement for gate receipts was September 30. It was restated by the government on October 18, and we knew nothing about the change until it was just dropped on us last week.

“No one complained in this league. Not one of the 66 clubs complained when it was going to be on gate receipts, so you’ve done something wrong when you suddenly go from a point of no one complaining to lots of people complaining.

“But then you’ve also got a problem where a lot of clubs are doing really, really well. Their argument is, ‘well not everyone is unhappy’. But just because you’ve handed free money to people,

that doesn’t make it right.”

Part of the problem discussed by the Dulwich chairman is that other clubs have been less than cautious with their spending, under the assumption that they would be entitled to a greater chunk of the rescue package.

Clasper added: “Clubs have started to spend that money, and they shouldn’t have done. We were all written to, to say, be prudent, don’t go and spend it. But we’re seeing a lot of signings happening in some clubs.

“I’ve been one of the few that has been [happy with the way the National League has handled the crisis]. From March onwards, they’ve done pretty well having been given a really tough hand, and they were doing well up until this distribution.

“Actually securing the money was a great achievement. But then when you’re handed the rules [how] to divide it and you get it wrong, then you undo a lot of really good work.”

Dulwich Hamlet FC Women were taking on Dartford at Champion Hill on Sunday afternoon, in what the club’s Twitter account was billing “the last chance to get down to Champion Hill for

at least a month”.

The second national lockdown, which is set to begin on Thursday, is the latest blow for Clasper, who has been delighted with attendances at the women’s matches this season.

Speaking hours before the government made its announcement, he said: “The women are allowed [fans] at the moment because they’re grassroots, not elite. But if the lockdown comes, I can’t imagine they’ll be allowing fans into grassroots games for the foreseeable future.

“It’s a huge problem, because we got 600 last time and we’ve already sold 400 for tomorrow’s game. So they’re getting double the attendances that they were getting last year. Switching that off again will be a disappointment.”

Clasper added: “We’ve never been campaigning for fans because we want to wait until it’s realistic and until we’re confident that it is safe. Clearly with the infection rate at the moment it isn’t.

“What we were campaigning for, though, was either not playing the games until we could, or funding. The announcement of funding was great. But then when you mess up the last bit of it, it’s not so great.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk PORTSMOUTH COULD again pursue a deal for Ben Thompson in January - if the midfielder is still struggling for game-time at Millwall.

Pompey boss Kenny Jackett made public in the last transfer window that he was keen on another loan deal for Thompson after the 25-year-old’s successful spell there in 2018-19.

And Porstmouth chief executive Mark Catlin said this week his club’s chances of signing Thompson “were at the mercy of the Lions”. Millwall wanted to sign a midfielder before letting Thompson out, but the Lions were unsuccessful in recruiting their primary target, Jayson Molumby from Brighton.

In a Q&A with Portsmouth’s club media this week, Catlin said: “We never talk about players that are contracted

to other clubs. “[But] we have got a fantastic relationship with Millwall. Myself and the CEO [Steve Kavanagh] get on great, club to club the owners get on great.

There are a lot of common links in regards to the passion of the fans and a club we get on well with from an executive point of view.

“I can’t comment on players at other clubs other than to say we know Ben, we know he’s a great player. I stay in regular contact with him and we want the best players at the club, so make your mind up there. Put two and two together, exactly that.

“We would never put the player out there to appease fans, it’s not our style or what we do.

“We were very pleased [with business in the transfer window], we signed a good mix of experience and up-andcoming talent.”

The Lions never got going in the game and the visitors fully deserved their three points as Rowett’s side lost at home for the first time in the league since July 8.

The hosts’ lack of midfield creativity and over-reliance on Jed Wallace was a problem. While Ryans Leonard and Woods have proved a good combination in central midfield,

Thompson is unlikely to be satisfied if he is still on the fringes of the first team in January. He was a regular in the side at 20, and knows that given his current age he needs to be a first-team player.

He enjoyed his time at Portsmouth where he was hugely popular with the fans.

When Wallace plays well, Millwall generally play well but when he isn’t on top form, there often isn’t someone else who steps up on a regular basis.

Both wingers’ efforts were made much harder by the aerial dominance of Christopher Schindler and Naby Sarr in defence, which meant long balls up to Tom Bradshaw had very little effect.

Kenneth Zohore’s absence through injury was a blow for Millwall as they lacked a focal point to hold the ball up in attack, with neither Bradshaw nor Matt Smith seeming particularly good fits for the lone striker role in the 5-2-3 system at home of late.

The formation - which is arguably too negative at The Den against some teams - requires a mobile target man who can also hold his own in the air, like Zohore or Troy Parrott. Millwall’s

Tactically, Millwall are much more flexible under Rowett but it appears that in recent weeks they haven’t quite got their tactics right at home against first Barnsley and then Huddersfield, something which the former Birmingham manager will be keen to rectify.

They will have time to work on it, with their next home game not until after the international break against Rowett’s predecessor Neil Harris’ Cardiff.

MILLWALL MADE it seven points from a possible nine away from home since the international break after drawing 0-0 with Daniel Farke’s Norwich on Tuesday night.

The Lions travelled to Carrow Road looking to end a 52-year wait for a win away to the Canaries, but they didn’t offer enough in attack to suggest that was ever a possibility.

Nonetheless, they were resolute defensively throughout the match and despite Norwich racking up 26 efforts on goal, only a few of those provided any

sort of challenge for Bart Bialkowski, with strong defending largely limiting the Canaries to pot-shots.

In fact, the Pole’s only challenging save in the first half came when a long-range attempt from Lukas Rupp - who had five efforts, all from outside the box - was deflected towards the bottom corner after hitting Mahlon Romeo, with Bialkowski tipping it around the post for a corner.

Marco Stiepermann should have done better with an earlier effort when Teemu Pukki found him in space in the box, and Przemyslaw Placheta also struck the post with minutes remaining in the first half.

The Lions were rather toothless going forward in the opening 45 minutes as Norwich easily defended against the slightly changed 5-3-2 shape, with the returning Gary Rowett opting to block up the central midfield areas from where the hosts tend to build attacks.

As a result, Norwich couldn’t get their slick build-up play going, though Millwall’s use of the ball was too poor to

trouble the Canaries’ defence in the first half, other than a Shaun Hutchinson effort after just eight minutes which flew over the bar.

The second half was largely more of the same, though Farke’s side managed to force Bialkowski into more action, none of it quite as troubling as the deflected Rupp effort in the opening half.

Millwall created the first half-chance since the break when Jed Wallace appeared to have released Jon Dadi Bodvarsson - the latter on his first league start since the opening day but the Icelandic international was outpaced by Grant Hanley who got round to cover well.

It took the hosts until the 73rd minute to force Bialkowski back into action when Emi Buendia found some space on the right side of Millwall’s box to test the Lions’ goalkeeper, before the Norwich attacker’s follow-up effort was cleared by Hutchinson.

Less than a minute later, there was a more comfortable save for the ex-

Ipswich stopper as he denied Placheta from range, before Pukki couldn’t beat Bialkowski with eleven minutes left.

Matt Smith’s introduction just after that Pukki effort gave the Lions’ defence some respite, before Norwich came forward again late on.

Smith gave Millwall an out-ball - after the visitors had reverted to a 5-2-3 when Mason Bennett came on in the 55th minute - which was crucial given the ineffectual Bodvarsson’s poor holdup play throughout the match.

There were two late chances for either side to snatch the three points. With less than a minute remaining Ben Gibson got free at the far post to shoot wide from a corner, before a quick Millwall break saw Bennett find Shaun Williams on the edge of the box but the Irishman found the angle of post and bar with his powerful right-footed effort.

Had the ball gone inches to the left it would have been a smash-and-grab victory for Millwall, given they had just six attempted shots compared to Norwich’s 26.

“I’ve only known Pearcey a couple of years but have got really close to him.

We travel in to training together.

“So to play and score and win when my mates were in charge was brilliant.

“It was just disappointing that we didn’t put in a better performance against Huddersfield.

“But, ultimately, you could draw those games 0-0 or 1-1 and you’re happy enough. But you win one, lose one and you get more points.

“Last season we had too many draws.”

Wallace can count on two hands the players he has kept in touch with in his career.

He continued: “It’s funny in football.

You see it all the time, you get on well with people but then one will leave the club and you don’t stay in touch.

“I probably speak to seven or eight [former team-mates] and I’ve probably played with a thousand players, which shows you’re not going to be best pals with everyone you meet.

“In the case of Pearcey and Willo, they’re two I’ll continue to speak to after Millwall.

“They’ll be out at my wedding, in Spain. My wife-tobe is very close to their wives.

They’ve got kids close in age to ours. It just clicked, really.

“That happens. Sometimes you think you’re pals with someone and then they go up north, you go down south and you lose touch. That’s football.

“It was nice to win at Preston for them, but disappointing we didn’t follow it up against Huddersfield.”

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson finds some rare space The game-plan was clearly focused on pinching the points with counterattacking efforts like that, as to go to a place like Carrow Road and look to be expansive could have seen Millwall torn apart. With this result, the Lions are still yet to lose consecutive league games under Rowett in 42 matches.

Despite the defensive set-up, Rowett was still disappointed with his side’s below-par use of the ball - especially in the first half - which meant they were under pressure, though without Norwich being able to create clear-cut chances.

Murray Wallace, Jake Cooper and Hutchinson were excellent in their work at the back and rarely stretched too much, though they’d have liked Millwall to have kept the ball better in spells.

The switch to a 5-3-2 did little to fix the same creative issues that Millwall have had throughout this season when employing a back five, with Shane Ferguson and Ben Thompson struggling to get on the ball in areas high enough up the pitch to create.

Ryan Woods did his usual job protecting the defence well and playing passes from that deeper role, with others in midfield needing to do more to allow Woods to dictate play from that deeper role he is so good at.

Thompson and Ferguson both looked a little rusty - understandably given their lack of game-time - but this was a huge chance to impress Rowett and neither did enough to prove that they

should be a more regular starter.

Millwall probably just about deserved their point given the lack of outstanding chances for Norwich. The Lions remain in and around the play-off picture.

Wallace scored a penalty in the 2-0 win at Preston last week in Alex Pearce and Shaun Williams’ first game of two in charge of Millwall.

It was an unprecedented situation as the 31-year-old Pearce and Williams, 34, found themselves in charge of their team-mates after manager Gary Rowett and the entire coaching staff had to go into self-isolation following four positive Covid-19 tests in the backroom staff.

Rowett returned for the away clash against Norwich on Tuesday, with Pearce and Williams reverting to playing roles.

The rest of the coaching staff are set to return for this weekend’s game at Sheffield Wednesday.

Pearce and Williams are both on the way to completing their full set of coaching badges, and Wallace has spoken previously about the number of players in the Lions dressing room who are management material “To be honest, I loved it,” Wallace told the News. “From a personal point of view Willo’s been one of my best friends for the last five years.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL MANAGER Gary Rowett has hinted that it could be up to Shaun Williams to decide if he wants to keep playing or devote more time to coaching ahead of any potential talks over a new deal.

Williams, who turned 34 last month, is out of contract at the end of this season.

The Ireland international joined the coaching staff during the summer and takes some sessions at Calmont Road.

He has seen his game-time limited

this season as Rowett’s preferred central-midfield pairing is currently Ryan Woods and Ryan Leonard.

Williams is approaching 250 starts for Millwall since joining from MK Dons in January 2014.

“I don’t really want to discuss any of the players’ contracts at this moment in time,” Rowett said when asked about Williams’ situation.

“Someone like Willo has been given an opprtunity to step into coaching. I think that’s something that as he goes along he’ll start to step into even more.

“I think that comes down to each individual player, whether they want to keep on playing as long as they can, or when they’ve been given an

opportunity to go into coaching they then want to put all their energy into that.

“That comes down to the individual. I certainly can’t answer that question for someone like Willo.”

Meanwhile, Millwall play their seventh league game in just three weeks when they go to Sheffield Wednesday this Saturday before the next international break.

Rowett admits it’s a tricky balance choosing when to rest key players such as Jed Wallace, Shaun Hutchinson and Jake Cooper.

“That’s not easy,” he said. “If players around those areas aren’t performing and scoring, creating opportunities,

then it makes it a lot easier.

“At the moment Jed is still our main attacker, our main focal point to attack.

On that basis it’s hard.

“I see him similar to Hutchy and Coops, where it’s very, very difficult to take them out of the starting line-up, as much as you’d like that option.

“Rotation is one thing, but you don’t want to rotate and weaken your team.

“That’s our challenge. There are certain games where we can go down a different route and it might suit one or two different players that can come into the team.

“But it’s difficult becaue you want to balance off rotation with still winning games and being very competitive.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk KENNETH ZOHORE will stay with Millwall as he recovers from injury - with Lions boss Gary Rowett hopeful he will return for the last month of his loan deal.

Zohore saw just 108 minutes of action after joining from West Brom, scoring on his first start in the 2-0 win at Preston before going off with a calf problem.

Millwall's other on-loan forward, Troy Parrott, started his treatment at parent club Spurs after injuring his quad in pre-season. Parrott is on course to return to club action after the international break.

"Troy went back for the first few weeks because we felt that was the best course to get him a really good start in terms of his rehab, with the facilities Tottenham have got," Rowett said after the 0-0 draw at Norwich on Tuesday.

"But with Ken we want to keep him down here if we can. We want to try and work as hard as we can to get him back playing as quickly as we can within a safe period.

"He wants to commit to that as well.

I'm hoping he can come back with at least a month of his loan left.

"Let's see if we can get some gametime out of him and let's see if he can be as effecive as he was.

"Troy's not far away. He'll probably go away with Ireland and let's hope they use him sensibly because he hasn't trained very much.

"Hopefully whatever happens he gets back from that and is in a much better position to play for us."
