New walk-through coronavirus testing sites have opened in Lambeth and Greenwich.

Both are available for anyone with Coronavirus symptoms to visit, by appointment, and are accessible to anyone unable to drive.

The Lambeth centre opened on Friday at Streatham Common Car Park (SW16 3BZ).

Greenwich's centre is at Abery Street Car Park (SE18 1DB). Both will offer daily appointments.

60 covid cases a day on average in southwark

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The number of people to have been diagnosed with confirmed COVID-19 in Southwark has now passed 3,000 since the beginning of the pandemic - with 423 new cases in just one week this month.

Despite this, Southwark is not one of the worst affected boroughs in London, with the centre of the second wave having shifted west; Ealing and Hammersmith and Fulham report the highest weekly rates of infection. Across the city, 13,000 new cases were confirmed during the last week.

As of 4pm on Tuesday, 3,159 people in Southwark have tested positive since February. During the week ending October 22, Southwark had 423 new cases, a huge jump from 266 new cases recorded the week previously. From mid-October onwards on

average 60 people have been testing positive each day in the borough.

On Tuesday, the government confirmed the nationwide daily COVID-19 death toll was the highest since the last week of May, when 422 deaths were recorded on the 27th.

Three hundred and sixty-seven people were reported to have died on October 27, within 28 days of a positive test. A total of 45,365 people have now lost their lives to COVID-19.

According to ONS data, 61,000 deaths in the UK have listed COVID-19 on the death certificate, as a possible contributing factor.

Although the north-west of England continues to bear the brunt of the pandemic - with 113 deaths recorded on Tuesday alone in that region - London is also seeing a rise.

Around a hundred people a day have been admitted to London hospitals in the last week, figures not seen since May. Sixteen deaths were recorded in London on Tuesday - the highest in weeks.

Bermondsey couple's baby APP

First ever black nurse in NHS was at St Thomas’

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The first-ever black nurse in the NHS worked at St Thomas’, the hospital has revealed, in a bid to inspire nurses and midwives to break down career barriers.

Kofoworola Abeni Pratt came to the UK in 1946, and was the first black student to attend the Nightingale Training School for nurses.

She experienced racism from patients, with one man refusing to be examined by a black nurse.

Born in Nigeria, she qualified as a state registered nurse in 1950, despite being married and having a son.

She became a staff nurse at the Evelina, and later returned to Nigeria.

She was originally denied a post as a ward sister, because it was open to British ex-pats.

Following independence in 1960, she set up the first modern nursing school in Nigeria at the University of

Ibadan.

Nurses today say they have been inspired by Kofoworola’s little-known story. “I am in awe of Kofoworola and how she managed to break barriers throughout her career,” said Alice Denga, a senior nurse at St Thomas’.

“Her determined spirit shows that you should never allow anything to distract you from pursuing a dream.

“She has inspired me to overcome challenges in my career, to persevere and to never give up."

Another nurse, Kendra Schneller, added: “Kofoworola has been an inspiration to me because despite the challenges she faced working as the first black nurse in the NHS and in he native Nigeria, she did not let that hold her back from pursuing her goals.

“Her experiences have paved the way for black nurses like myself to be determined to achieve and continue the belief that we are the change makers and the effort must continue.”

Kofoworola died in 1992, aged 77.

Sarah Roesink, 40, and Spyros Zevelakis, 46, have three small children, one of whom was born just as lockdown began.

They decided to use the lockdown period to work on their app, called Phoebe, to help parents wean their children with healthy meals. They had previously shared recipes online, after their first child was born four years ago, and have built up a solid following.

“Having a baby is a celebration to life but it comes with an overwhelming sense of responsibility and other challenges,” said mum Sarah.

“You want to offer your baby the best possible start in life but don’t know where to start. And your baby might have allergies or intolerances on the top of everything.”

Many new mums and dads turn to social media to find recipes for weaning - but the 40-year-old says she found it too time consuming.

“There were too many distractions and too many show offs that can make a mother, covered in babysick, feel really poorly,” she said.

The couple’s app has videos of recipes to slowly wean your baby, with a focus on healthy ingredients.

Recipes can be filtered by age and by common allergens.

It was built by Spyros, who works in design for tech firms. He said he hoped the new app would help dads pitch in with weaning their kids.

“In my mind, I want to create something that dads can use to

support their partners,” he said.

“Weaning a baby is widely considered a mother's business right now. I think this needs to change.”

Canada Water ‘under siege’ Firework-slinging youths, ‘injure teenage girl’ and specialist police are drafted in

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Territorial Support units are being drafted in to clamp-down on firework-slinging youths at a major transport hub, after residents this weekend were forced to flee from a bar under siege from rockets.

Public order police were brought into Canada Water on Monday to tackle the latest wave of youths launching fireworks at unsuspecting members of the public.

It comes amid reports of people being injured after being hit by the projectiles, including a girl who was reportedly hit in the mouth with horror burns.

Fourteen-year-old Holly Kane from Deptford told the Sun online that boys on bikes threw the rocket on the floor as she was walking with her friend and it hit her in the face last Saturday. She was rushed to St Thomas’ Hospital, bleeding, her ‘mouth was burned to a crisp, while her lips and cheeks swelled to double the

size’. Her mother said “she’s very lucky that she wears glasses because she could have been blinded.”

Residents in the area have been sounding the alarm for weeks about youths launching projectiles at people, businesses and homes near the station.

Anger reached a boiling point on Saturday, after customers enjoying a drink outside Ledbelly’s bar were targeted by the youngsters with rockets.

Customers were forced to run to safety to avoid being hit. Hundreds of angry residents have signed a petition demanding action.

Police have even warned that the criminals are tampering with the fireworks to make them more dangerous.

“The whole terrace outside was full,” said Ledbelly’s owner, Paul Graham. “We had people running inside or running to escape just to get away from the fireworks.

“I’m thinking, perhaps I should close up, I just don’t want the hassle. That would be 25 people losing their jobs.”

Mr Graham warned that either someone was going to get seriously hurt from being hit with a firework – or seriously hurt because fed-up locals could take action into their own hands if it does not stop.

Southwark Police say they are being supported in the clampdown by the Territorial Support Group (TSG), a Met unit often used to police riots.

“Older people will buy the fireworks and sell them on or give them to these people, unfortunately,” said Insp Tom Cornish of Southwark Police.

“Some of them [fireworks] have been tampered with, to make them more powerful, more loud.”

The Met have pledged extra resources to tackle the area, with both officers on patrol and covert operations.

An annual operation, targeting antisocial behaviour in the period around Halloween and Bonfire Night, will also help, it is hoped.

Inspector Cornish said he could not confirm reports of specific injuries caused by the fireworks, but said: “It’s quite possible that it’s happened because these people are behaving so recklessly with these fireworks.”

Officers had identified eight youths in an initial group believed to be responsible for throwing the rockets.

One of those is suspected of being the ringleader, and will be attending a police station to answer questions. A “stash” of fireworks being used in the attacks were discovered hidden in the plaza, and have since been seized by police.

However, officers say an older group has since taken up throwing the fireworks, so Southwark Police have to start the process of identifying them again.

“We’re back to square one,” said Inspector Cornish. “We’re on half term, which doesn’t help.”

He denied that police were reluctant to arrest the perpetrators because they are young, as some residents have claimed.

“Young people can be arrested just like anyone else, that doesn’t make any difference,” he said.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP, Neil Coyle has called for a public meeting with Southwark’s top cop Ch Supt Colin Wingrove in a bid to stop residents being terrorised.

Councillors in the area have also called for additional patrols and enforcement.

Officers, however, face an uphill battle to reassure residents after similar incidents in the previous weeks.

Mr Graham said he did not feel optimistic about the prospect of things improving. “Unless they do something to these kids, it’s not going to do anything.”

And another fed-up resident added: “People are thinking that Canada Water has become a no-go zone.”

bar loses licence after police visits

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Councillors have stripped an Old Kent Road restaurant of its licence after a string of police visits uncovered an apparent nightclub operating in its basement in breach of Covid rules.

Officers carried out a string of visits to Afrikiko Bar and Restaurant throughout July, August and September, including late on September 26.

Up to sixty people were inside, the meeting heard, including a mother with a young baby in her arms.

The door to the basement was locked in a bid to prevent police from entering, councillors were told, with the lights shut off.

So many people eventually came out that police lost count.

But the venue told councillors that it was a family gathering. Asked why the door was locked, it said those inside had locked themselves away for fear for their own safety, because a member of the family had recently been stabbed.

Afrikiko also denied that it operated the basement at any point as a nightclub, saying it was a “lounge bar.”

Arguing for the licence to be revoked, counsel for the Met Police, Gary Grant, accused the venue of flagrantly breaching the Covid rules.

“We were told it’s a family meeting,” said Mr Grant of the September 26 incident. “We say that’s a bare-faced lie.”

Most were carrying cups with alcoholic drinks, he said, with shisha and buckets of wine on the tables.

One woman claimed to have been cleaning in the pitch-black basement, he said, “albeit in full makeup and an evening dress.”

He added: “The overwhelming number of operators have carried out heroic efforts to take measures to protect their staff, customers and also the whole community from Covid.

Council office block scrapped

A controversial £20 million new Southwark Council office block in Peckham has been officially scrapped.

QR4, as the project came to be known, saw a day centre demolished to make way for new office space, with residents unhappy with the design, scale, and types of services planned for the primarily residential area in Asylum Road.

In a cabinet meeting this month the council formally stopped the project and agreed to terminate all contracts, citing the tough financial position presented by COVID-19, and changes to how staff are working.

Two million has already been spent on the project, including demolition, since plans were announced in 2017.

The site is now being proposed for new housing, with an architect being appointed to look at new options.

Alternative provision will now have to be found for the 395 staff who were slated to move into the new block from run-down offices elsewhere.

Office space will still be needed; as the report notes: “Stopping QR4 does not remove the need for safe, modern and welcoming spaces for staff in Homelessness and Children’s Services.

“Staff in these locations are key to delivering essential frontline services to residents.”

“Those good operators are let down by operators like Afrikiko.”

On one visit, club representative Daniel Dorner accused police of picking on Afrikiko, rather than other venues, the meeting was told.

When asked by police to tell them who those were, Mr Dorner is alleged to have refused because he was not a “snitch.”

In another visit on August 29, police say they attempted to visit only for patrons to try to push the door shut from the other side. A person was heard by police calling “Krissy shut the door!” councillors were told.

Officers say a voice was then heard shouting at people to sit down and instructing them: "No dancing... just look at each other."

The venue had already had restrictions placed on its operation following a murder outside in 2017.

But counsel for Afrikiko, Matthew Phipps, told councillors that the venue had not operated as a nightclub at all.

“Our position is clear: the premises has not traded as a nightclub,” he said. The basement bar “has tables and chairs,” he said, with “no real space to dance.”

He added: “In fact, the presence of a ten-month-old baby at the premises demonstrates that we were not operating as a nightclub.”

Mr Phipps denied councillor queries whether lights and music at an incident on August 15 amounted to a nightclub. “It’s there to create a mood,” he said.

“There’s not been anything other than sporadic dancing, there’s been nothing to encourage dancing in that way.”

“The regulations say you’re not allowed to trade as a nightclub. You are allowed to modify your operation to trade effectively as a bar, that’s what we were doing, that’s our position.”

The reasons for the decision will be given to the venue within five working days. It has a window of 21 working days within which to appeal the decision.

Man charged with child abduction A man has been charged after a seven-year-old girl was grabbed and carried down a street in Camberwell, writes Katherine Johnston...

Fortunately the child was not physically hurt during the ordeal in Mary Datchelor Close last Thursday evening.

Clifford Daley, aged 33 and from Southwark, was charged on Saturday, October 24, with child abduction and possession of cannabis.

He appeared in custody at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Low Emissions Neighbourhoods have been fast-tracked by Southwark Council with to emergency COVID-19 legislation aimed at helping ease pressure on public transport, reducing air pollution, and creating more space for social distancing.

As the News has reported, emergency services’ navigation systems failed to be updated properly before the road blocks were put in place, with reports of confusion and delays in both Walworth and East Dulwich due to ‘no right turn’ signs and no through access.

Residents in Brandon estate were frustrated after being left with just one exit route and unable to access Walworth Road directly, and a collection of Melbourne Grove traders say loss of passing trade leaves them in an even more precarious condition - just months after reopening.

But John Whelan, who has lived on Browning Street for the past seven years, says that the new low emission neighbourhood measures in Walworth are not street closures but street openings.

“They are opening up our streets to a number of possibilities that reclaim and reuse our space to improve the environment and wellbeing,” he explains.

“I’ve certainly noticed the difference in the quality of air and it’s been great to see an improved streetscape.”

congestion charge expansion denial

Southwark Cyclists state their case

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Cyclists have praised the council’s low emission neighbourhoods for encouraging people to get on their bikes.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk The government has denied attempting to force an extension of the Congestion Charge zone across a large part of Southwark in exchange for a Transport for London (TfL) bailout.

Mayor Sadiq Khan has accused government ministers of a ‘triple whammy’ of conditions imposed on TfL for a potential bailout, including removing free travel from children and the elderly.

It is claimed that among the demands are the expansion of the congestion charge zone to the north and south circular roads, which would encompass a large part of Southwark by October 2021.

It would leave motorists faced with paying the £15 a day charge even as far south as Dulwich.

A letter sent to Mr Khan by transport secretary Grant Shapps emerged this week which stated: “Given the significant rise in congestion in inner London, we also propose the extension of the central London congestion charging zone to cover the same area as the Ultra Low Emission Zone.”

However, Mr Shapps denied forcing an extension on the Mayor in exchange for

community and evaluating our own life choices, we can and we will protect our community and planet for our young people and our future generations.”

Peter Wright has been a resident of Mason Street near the Bricklayers Arms roundabout for 20 years.

He has been involved with ‘greening up’ communities, as he puts it, for a long time as chair of the Bricklayers Arms Tenants and Residents Association and Southwark Living Streets; a key supporter of the nearby Salisbury Row Streets for People scheme.

“We won a £1.7 million grant from TfL to ‘green over’ Mason Street. It also helped to make Salisbury Row park into one piece and put proper paths across it,” he says.

“Our survey found that there was an 80 per cent decrease in traffic and a 70 per cent increase in footfall. It has made the area very pleasant and the before and after photos speak for themselves.

week, Boris Johnson accused Sadiq Khan of effectively bankrupting TfL. But supporters of the mayor have pointed out that the annual operating deficit for TfL decreased by 71 per cent under four years of Mr Khan’s mayorship.

A current financing arrangement runs out in just days at the end of this month, meaning TfL and the government have to come to a fresh agreement, or TfL will be required to declare that it cannot run a balanced budget.

“I learned that if you get people together and give them the opportunity to talk, they do get engaged with their area.

“The result of the project clearly shows the positive changes that can be made to the public realm improving it for local residents.

“I hope to see more of these temporary measures in Walworth being made permanent in the future.”

On the Browning Street LENs, Peter told the News: “The street is now more calming. There’s a lot less noise, I feel the pollution has gone down and there’s more space to walk.

“It’s been pleasant to sit outside and enjoy yourself at the cafe.”

Meanwhile, Lambeth Council started work on the new Brockwell Park to Gispy Hill ‘healthy route’ which cuts through parts of Dulwich.

The road, which runs parallel to the main arterial route Croxted Road, and meets the South Circular at West Dulwich.

A series of new zebra crossings have been added along the section of Rosendale Road near Rosedale Primary, along with posts preventing parking along a new cycling route.

The fraught issue has been particularly contentious in recent months, with some motorists claiming the roadblocks actually increase congestion.

But the coordinator of Southwark Cyclists, a campaigning group, has praised the schemes saying they need time to bed in.

“A lot of it comes down to having safe routes for people,” said Jakub Mamczak, the coordinator of the group.

“If the traffic goes too high, then people don’t feel safe. Navigation apps have pushed a lot of traffic onto side roads, in London it’s just shot up.”

Mr Mamczak said the combination of preventing cars from using side roads which were less used before sat-navs, and installing segregated cycle routes on main roads was the best way to encourage cycling.

He also pointed to a collapse in passenger numbers on public transport as a reason to back the scheme, as people need to seek alternatives to using the tube or bus.

“Earlier in lockdown, we saw a shortage of bikes in bike shops,” he said. “There’s definitely been an increase in the number of cyclists.”

Some have also levelled criticism at LTNs for blocking emergency vehicles. “I don’t think it’s necessarily the low-traffic neighbourhood,” he said. “It seems an issue with communication [of changes] or GPS updates.

“And if you look at Waltham Forest, response times did not rise at all.”

Another criticism some have levied is that roadblocks push traffic off side roads onto main roads, making them busier and more polluted.

“These schemes have always got to take a bit of time to bed in,” he said.

“GPS updates take some time, as well, but what we have seen where this has happened before is that things settle down eventually.

“It comes back to that idea of making driving less convenient and cycling more convenient.”

Lobby groups like Southwark Cyclists don’t think cars should not be used, he told the News, but want cycling to be a convenient and attractive option for relatively short journeys. He added that if a LEN was not working as intended, it can be adapted. “Adjustments can be made, if something isn’t working, it can be changed,” he said.

Labour-run Tooley Street has already funded free school meals during term time since 2010. Last Friday, council leader Kieron Williams announced: “We will fund school meals this half term.

"It’s the decision that the government should have made yesterday, but they have failed so we are stepping up.

“We want to end child poverty and will do all that we can to keep our families strong.”

Jasmine Ali, deputy leader and cabinet member for children, young people and schools, added: “We are joining forces with Marcus Rashford and other cash-strapped councils across London to demand this government supports families through this dreadful pandemic and reinstate free school meals over the holiday period.”

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Food bank dependency is expected to surge this winter due to rising unemployment that has already left 5,000 out of work in Bermondsey and Old Southwark alone.

The furlough scheme has now been replaced by the Job Support Scheme, whilst businesses in tier three ‘very high risk’ areas that have to close can gain support.

Southwark and all of London is currently in tier 2, with employers able to apply for the Job Support Scheme.

The scheme is a reduced version of the furlough support, which was beefed up this week by Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

But there are fears this will not stop a jobs bloodbath this winter in Southwark.

According to HM Revenue and Customs data, by August 9,000 jobs were still furloughed in Bermondsey and Old Southwark (around 12 per cent of the

eligible roles), 9,600 in Camberwell and Peckham (thirteen per cent take up), and 7,100 - (twelve per cent take up) in Dulwich and West Norwood. In June 39,200 people were furloughed across the whole of Southwark.

In parallel, redundancies and unemployment figures are also rising.

The number of unemployed people in Neil Coyle's constituency Bermondsey and Old Southwark has risen by 5,000 Young people under 25 are twice as likely to have been furloughed or made redundant with one in four currently at risk of long-term unemployment.

As the News has reported, Helen Hayes has lobbied for more support for the 28,000 jobs most at risk across London - including in the hospitality sector branding the ‘unviable’ industries as ‘Sunak’s scrapheap’, after the chancellor.

There to help people left in a precarious financial position, the Southwark food bank saw a staggering 500 per cent increase in users during the first three months of 2020 - and is expecting further demands on its

already stretched services throughout winter.

Ledbury Action Group, which sets up an appeal each year to support the charity in the run up to Christmas, says it is starting the campaign early this year in anticipation of the sheer number of people needing support.

Writing to the News, Danielle Gregory, who set up the fundraiser, said: “Ahead of what is likely to be one of the toughest winters that our Southwark community has ever faced, and as we see an exponential rise in food bank usage - we are seeking to ensure that everyone knows about Southwark food bank as a lifeline in our community, and that those who are able to donate either funds or long life food - know how to do so.

“Likewise, we want to ensure that everyone who finds themself in troubling times can get the support that they need.”

Although the majority of councils to commit to the funding are Labour-run, some Conservative authorities have also pledged they will meet the cost.

Hundreds of organisations across the UK have now stepped in to provide support, with many businesses offering free meals with no questions asked throughout this week including Lower Road’s Express Fish Bar; pizza shop 400 rabbits; Open Door Kitchen; Eastern Foods and Joanna’s in Crystal Palace and Gipsy Hill; and Dough Bakehouse in Herne Hill.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said that his govermnemt will ‘do everything in our power to make sure that no kid, no child goes hungry.” He said the £20 a week Universal Credit increase, brought in during lockdown, was helping families, as was over £60m of emergency cash distributed to councils over the summer.

Peckham Pantry opens to offer discounted food

The new shop has been set up by Peckham charity Pecan, which runs a food bank and offers other vital support.

The pantry's goods have a fixed price of £4.50 for its members - giving them the opportunity to buy items with a value of at least £15 at every visit.

This is the second pantry to open in Peckham, after the idea was first trialled in St Luke’s Church.

Brunel collision A man was rushed to hospital with head injuries after a collision outside the Brunel pub as the News went to press, writes Josh Salisbury...

Paramedics were dispatched to the scene on Brunel Road shortly after 2.30pm on Tuesday afternoon. The emergency services have taped off the road while they deal with the incident.

Photos taken at the scene showed two cars involved in the collision. One of them appeared to have struck the pavement outside the popular boozer.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service told the News they treated a man at the scene for his head injuries.

“We were called at 2.33pm today (27 October) to reports of a road traffic collision on Brunel Road, Rotherhithe,” she said.

“We sent an ambulance crew and two medics in cars to the scene.

“We treated a man at the scene for head injuries and took him to hospital.”

Railway bridge blaze in Borough

Firefighters dealt with a small blaze on the bridge spanning Southwark Bridge Road on Sunday morning, writes Josh Salisbury...

The scaffold boards underneath the bridge were ablaze, but luckily nobody was injured.

Ruby Rees-Sheridan, 26, of Newington Causeway said: “It was falling on the cyclists and that’s when I called the fire brigade.

“It was so weird, we couldn’t work out what was going on.”

The Brigade had to tackle the fire from underneath, said a witness, because they weren’t able to get onto a nearby roof from which to spray their hose.

Firefighters have not yet been able to confirm the cause of the blaze, which started around 8.20am.

Hearing to see if treasure is found

A hearing will be held today, (Thursday, October 29), to determine if treasure has been found in south London, writes Josh Salisbury...

Southwark Coroner’s Court will hear whether eight cases of potential treasure are in fact valuable items.

The artefacts have been given discovery dates between 2015 and 2017. No further details have been released about the objects or where they were uncovered.

Under law, treasure finds must be reported to a coroner within fourteen days. A hearing is then held to determine if it is treasure. Museums then have a chance to express an interest, and finders and landowners can be given a share of the reward.

Only certain types of items count as treasure, including any metallic item older than 300 years which is made of at least ten per cent precious metals like gold or silver.

‘We want well-to-do regulars with trendy clothes’ says proposed bar

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A proposed bar in the former Natwest bank on the corner of Tower Bridge Road says it wants sophisticated “well-to-do” regulars who are only wearing “trendy and nicer clothing.”

Masq London Ltd, which describes itself as a real estate company, has

asked for permission from the council to set up a bar and restaurant in the Grade 2-listed building.

“Overall, we want our regulars to be well-to-do (or aspiring to be so), we want them to come to our bar in small, or intimate groups (e.g. mature city professionals in smart business casual),” the applicants say.

“But we don’t want to attract in [a] large crowd, unless it’s a private

party.”

The restaurant would allow casual entry, says the application but the bar will have an advance booking policy or casual entry with a cover charge.

This is because “we want the type of regulars that we will end up attracting, to fit the type of person we imagined when we are setting up our Bar & Restaurant,” say the applicants.

The business says its “mixed crowd” must have “spent some time prepping to go out for the night in trendy and nicer clothing.”

Regulars will want a “quiet, intimate, and beautiful atmosphere that matches their level of sophistication,” it adds.

The applicants have also stated they want a stage for what they call “live subtle music” such as jazz and karaoke.

The licensing application will be considered at a hearing on Thursday, October 29.

If approved, the bar would be in the ground floor and basement floor of the building, with some outdoor space.

Man charged after four officers hospitalised

A man appeared in court last Thursday after a collision in Camberwell hospitalised four police officers.

Haydon Martin, 25, of Fenwick Road, Peckham, is charged with two counts of two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving after a collision near Camberwell’s Elmington Estate on Tuesday afternoon last week.

Four officers were injured in the collision. One of them, a woman police officer who was driving the police car, still remains in hospital.

She had to be cut out of the vehicle after the collision near Brisbane Street. The other three have since been discharged.

Wedding party of 250 raided by police on old kent road

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A 250-strong wedding party in Old Kent Road was shut down by police after a ‘flagrant breach’ of COVID-19 rules.

Officers were called to the venue at 8.20pm Sunday, 18 October, after concerned residents reported a suspected burglary.

Police found the venue’s shutters had been closed in an attempt, they believe, to hide what was going on inside.

More than 200 people were celebrating at the event, in defiance of current rules, and there was no social distancing or other safety measures in place.

Currently, only up to fifteen people can attend a wedding if the venue is able to safely accommodate them, and social distancing must be followed.

At the scene police dispersed the crowd and reported two people for

consideration of a fixed penalty notice.

Detective Superintendent Nicky Arrowsmith, said: “This event was a blatant breach of the regulations and could have been a breeding ground for transmitting the virus.

There were over 200 people inside, no social distancing and indeed no attempts to make the venue COVID secure, in line with the government guidelines.

“The guidelines are there for a reason, to keep people safe.

“Being reported for a fine is clearly not a wedding present people would be expecting, however as this was such a flagrant breach of the regulations, it was entirely necessary.

“Officers across the Met will continue our efforts to keep London safe by shutting down those events which deliberately and dangerously put people’s health at risk.

“If you are planning a wedding this weekend please make sure it falls within the current regulations.”

Sixty-three arrests as police crack down on county lines gangs

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Fifty-three people were arrested and £63,000 in criminal cash seized after a six-week operation targeting organised criminals and county lines gangs in south-east London.

The arrests were the result of a series of early morning raids across Greenwich, Bexley, and further into Kent and the Thames Valley after five months of undercover investigation of 33 county lines running out of London.

Six women and 47 men, aged between sixteen and 48, were arrested on suspicion of a range of offences including: possession of firearms and ammunition; possession of offensive weapons; possession of criminal property; possession with intent to supply class A and B drugs, and supply of class A and B drugs.

£63,000 in cash was seized along with 320 grams of crack cocaine, 150 grams of heroin and a quantity of cannabis was recovered along with weapons including firearms, knives and knuckle dusters.

Cars worth £45,000, and £40,000 worth of Rolex watches - all believed to be the proceeds of crime - were also recovered.

During the operation police also identified two young victims of gang exploitation who are now receiving specialist help.

Detective Inspector Jo Gresham, who led the operation, said: “Operations like this one, which disrupt county lines drug supply and dealing, and target the criminal exploitation of vulnerable people, are vital because we know that this type of criminality drives a high proportion of violent crime in London.

“We carried out a huge amount of

investigative work behind the scenes before conducting these warrants.

“This operation was also aimed at identifying and cracking down on the exploitation of children, who can be manipulated into carrying out criminal acts.

“During this operation we have identified two young people who were victims of this type of exploitation, who we are now safeguarding and working with to give them the support they need.

“I would urge anyone who may have information about any criminality in their area to contact police, or Crimestoppers, so that we can take proactive action - your information is invaluable to us.”

The attack took place in the morning of March 18 this year, in busy Jamaica Road, at around 9.20am.

The male victim who is in his 30s was left injured and ‘extremely shaken’ after his bag - with cash and 'high value' IT equipment - was stolen.

He was targeted by two men police believe made off in a silver Vauxhall heading toward Rotherhithe.

A man who was arrested in relation to the incident has since been released under investigation.

Police say they are now trying to identify a woman who was sitting in a hatchback vehicle at the location at the time of the attack.

She is described as white, aged

between 25 and 30 years old, with mousy blonde hair. She spoke with a London accent. She was with a man of a similar age, with dark hair and stubble.

Detective Constable Ashley Hooker said: “After the incident occurred, a woman in a stationary car spoke to another witness about what she saw in the aftermath of the robbery.

“She was sitting in a car near to Jamaica Road, SE16 and witnessed the suspects make off.

“We are very keen to find this woman as we believe she can assist us with our enquiries.

“Similarly, if you witnessed the incident or have any information that could assist the investigation, please get in contact.

“This was a nasty attack which left the victim extremely shaken.”

Food charities FareShare and the Trussell Trust are appealing for volunteers to help the annual pre-Christmas Tesco food collection from November 19-21.

During the collection customers are encouraged to donate long-life food to help food banks and community groups support people this Christmas.

Tesco will top-up customer donations by 20 per cent, in cash.

Last year, three million meals were collected and, since its launch in 2012, more than 76 million meals have been donated to FareShare and the Trussell Trust.

The volunteers are needed to encourage shoppers to leave their donations in the collection point at the front of stores, with shoppers more likely to donate if volunteers are present.

Foodbanks in the Trussell Trust’s network are expecting to give out six

emergency food parcels every minute this winter.

Ruth Koch, south London representative at the Trussell Trust, said: “A crisis can often bring out the best in people, and we have been overwhelmed by the support the UK has shown towards food banks in light of the coronavirus outbreak.

“As we look to the one of the busiest times of the year for food banks in our network, we would be so grateful if people can share shopping lists of their local food bank’s most-needed items on their social media to encourage friends and family to donate.

“Together we can make a difference and ensure that food banks are able to help people in crisis this winter.”

Meanwhile FareShare has tripled the amount of food it has been providing since the start of the pandemic and will be supplying food to 11,000 frontline charities and community groups

supporting people this winter.

Rachel Ledwith, London development manager at Fareshare, said: “We know that many people have already fallen victim to the economic impact of the pandemic and thousands more are at risk of losing their jobs and livelihoods.

“We have seen a huge increase in people turning to their local grassroots community groups for support and demand for food is more than double pre-pandemic levels.

“We would be hugely grateful to anyone who is able to volunteer this year to encourage more shoppers to donate much needed ambient food to those who need it most.”

They are looking for new or nearly new baby or children’s toys and books. Small items that can be used as stocking fillers are welcome, but people are asked not to bring in clothes or bedding.

giving young carers some time to create Young carers in Southwark aged between eight and sixteen have been taking part in an online arts project to reduce isolation.

The project was developed by the charity Create, and was supported

by British Land. It aimed to alleviate feelings of loneliness and offer young carers time away.

Around 20 young carers from Southwark took part this summer.

All were members of Imago, a local charity that provides support services to young carers in Southwark, based in the shopping centre at Surrey Quays.

The project has been run in conjunction with Surrey Quays since

2013, and the digital pilot allowed carers to take part from home.

“We have built a great relationship with both Create and Imago over the years, which has helped hundreds of local young carers take a break from their caring responsibilities through the arts,” said Ian Moore, the Surrey Quays Centre manager.

“This year was no different and we enjoyed bringing even more young carers on board, especially at a time when interacting with others and supporting those in our local communities has never been so important.”

The art:space project explored three different art forms including drama,

visual art and music.

“We love working with British Land on the art:space project. This creative project has been especially important this year, when the pandemic has made the lives of young carers across the UK even tougher,” said Nicky Goulder, Founding Chief Executive of arts charity Create.

“By reaching these young carers in Southwark with the power of the creative arts, we were able to give them time and space to express themselves, meet other young carers, and boost their sense of wellbeing.

“It is vital that, together, we make our young carers feel valued and supported, as they deserve.”

The state has a duty to protect the lives of black and non-black people

A

s we mark Black History Month this year we must reflect honestly on the explosion of anger at the murder of George Floyd both here and in the United States and propose meaningful action to make real progress.

This is not only about the appalling police brutality in the States, but also the inequality, prejudice and discrimination still faced by Black people here. We have to show solidarity to those in the US and also recognise that here in the UK, too, there is inequality, prejudice and discrimination.

As chair of parliament's human rights select committee, I'm leading a #BlackLivesMatter inquiry looking at the extent to which human rights of non-black people in this country are unequal and how that can be changed. In particular, the committee is considering the over-representation of black people in prison and deaths in police custody; the Windrush scandal; and the greater likelihood of black mothers to die in childbirth and the lack of an equal right to vote.

Human rights are supposed to be universal, the same for every human being. Yet when we conducted the biggest ever polling of black people, three in four black Brits told us they don’t believe they have the same human rights as white people.

In the UK, you are still nine times more likely to be stopped and searched if you are black than if you are white. It is hard to see how this can change until we have equal numbers of non-white officers at all levels of the Met including right at the top. And we are a long way off that. I am demanding the police set a target to increase the number of black officers and publish the percentage of black police in every force by seniority.

I am also urging the police to establish regular polling of the black community’s perception of policing and set a numerical target to increase confidence.

And the majority of Black people in the UK believe they are not treated equally by the NHS. Black women especially feel unequally treated by health service.

These findings are stark, especially as so many black people work in the NHS yet still feel that it does not value their lives equally. The fact that this is most strongly felt by black women perhaps reflects

women’s greater role in caring for children and older relatives.

The results pose a major challenge to the health service, and senior figures cannot sweep them under the carpet. The state has a duty to protect life and not to discriminate.

They have a duty to protect the lives of black and non-black people equally. Black women are five times more likely to die in childbirth than white women. We are demanding the NHS set a target to end the racial maternal mortality gap.

Justified anger needs recognition and demands change. Everyday experiences of racism need to be recognised as fact. And there needs to be concrete change to stop it.

A succession of reports in recent years have found structural racial inequalities in our institutions, from the Home Office treatment of the Windrush generation to David Lammy’s 2017 report on the disproportionately high numbers of black people in the youth justice system. We will report in the next couple of weeks and will be demanding the government implement the findings of these reports. Commissioning reports and failing to implement them only intensifies the lack of confidence in government on race issues.

We were appalled to hear there are no black commissioners on the Equality and Human Rights Commission. At the national level there is no black led organisation whose responsibility it is to champion race equality and lead the drive for progress. The government must sort this urgently.

The history of Southwark, and of Britain, is a history of migration. Yet fewer than 10 per cent of students learn this at school. This too must change. Our understanding of history informs our national identity - it informs our understanding of the word British and who is included in that.

Teaching black history one month a year is not enough. We need to embed an understanding of our colonial past and a celebration of the immense contribution of Black Britons to this country in our school syllabus. It is not the responsibility of black people to make our society equal. It is the responsibility of all of us, particularly those of us in leading positions able to drive change. And an equal society is not only justice for black people but benefits everyone.

Plenty to do in the garden before winter sets in

O

ctober is the second of the autumn months; and weatherwise has been true to form with a mix of torrential rain, gusty winds and some fine bright days mixed in. No sign of the autumn mists and fog - yet.

With daylight hours shortening there is still plenty of work to do in the garden - before the winter weather sets in. Spring flowering bulbs, corms and tubers can be planted during the next few weeks - the Daffodils (Narcissus) Crocus, English Bluebells, Hyacinths and Winter Aconite; save the Tulips for November planting (to decrease the risk of Tulip viruses).

Cut back summer perennials that are now looking soggy and sad; if beds need digging over make a start - the recent wet weather has softened the ground; gently loosen compacted areas this will also help expose larvae that are hiding in the soil or concealed around plants; birds will find and feast on the insect larvae/eggs of moths, beetles, slugs and snails reducing pest numbers.

Geraniums and Roses are still flowering, although they lack vigour and are clearly missing the sun’s warmth. There are some stunning seasonal flowering plants to look out for - late Dahlias, the beautiful Camelia sasanqua and Alstroemeria – popular with florists and used for cut flowers. My seasonal plant of the month is Japanese anemone; a modest perennial that begins flowering in late summer and often stays around until November (depending on the variety) then dies back over winter.

It is happy in a woodland, shady type situation and also tolerant of dry conditions. One of the prettiest varieties is Anemone rupicola ‘Wild Swan’. It is white with a hint of blue as the flowers open. Anemone splendens has pink flowers and blooms through to the end of October.

Most other varieties start flowering in July and last until September.

Leaves are slow to turn this year - except the ornamental Cherry and Acer which rarely disappoint - their leaves have changed to a gorgeous shade of orangey-red. The Sycamores and London Planes are often the last to turn and always seem reluctant to let their leaves go; usually a sudden drop in temperature combined with autumn gales means by November most, if not all leaves are swept away – revealing the intricate structures of tree branches and twigs; and just visible those tiny, tightly closed buds that will be next year’s leaves – spring is never that far away.

The Covid-19 pandemic is not the only threat to our high streets. Amongst the Government’s proposals to overhaul our planning system are further attacks on our local shops.

The situation is already stark with the Centre for Retail Research finding that almost 14,000 shops across the country pulled down their shutters for the final time, this year alone.

Despite this, ministers have just pushed through an expansion of permitted development rights, enabling retail and office space to be demolished to give way to flats.

These proposals would also remove democratic control from councillors and bar local people from being able to formally object to these schemes which could permanently transform the face of our communities.

Whilst permitted development projects now have to abide by minimum space standards, they still do not have to be set at an affordable rent or provide outside space for tenants.

More permitted development and the gutting of our high streets is not the solution to our housing crisis. The Government must urgently have a rethink on this.

More road changes to encourage walking and cycling approved by Southwark Council I suspect that I may be in the minority of people who have commented here but I like the idea of changes to encourage more walking and cycling. It would be interesting to see the data from these changes and not just jump to conclusion and dismiss something off hand. Of course any study would need to be conducted over a period of time but if the outcome is fewer cars on local roads, improvement in air quality and and improvement in health and wellbeing for local people (including our children) then what's not to like? We need to ask how many unnecessary car journeys are we making, and how many of these could be walked or cycled?

Well done to council and Canada Water indicative community for stepping in of the Met’s problems

O

nce again Southwark’s community has come together and shown the government its strength in the face of adversity through the end child food poverty campaign.

Despite economic uncertainty, and real hardship for many, many are putting our children and young people first and making sure no one has to go hungry this half term.

It is clear that Boris Johnson and the Conservative government had not anticipated the depth of feeling on this issue.

Most people in this country believe that whatever is going on in a parent’s life, that shouldn’t affect whether or not their child gets fed. As Marcus Rashford has said - it’s never a child’s fault.

The government says the £60 million hardship funding it gave to councils during the pandemic is helping to feed families - as is the £20 weekly uplift in Universal Credit, which the government had at one point been planning to axe.

But as this paper reported, the range of emergency support and extra services being fulfilled by our local authority has left it staring into a £16.3m black hole this year, rising to £26m in the next.

And the government did step in and provide free school meal funding over the summer - despite all the same support it outlined above being in place.

The next test will be Christmas.

As our government seemingly flounders over what to do, thank goodness for the incredibly talented and hardworking people at Southwark Food Bank. They help people who would otherwise be destitute get back on track.

ews that a special police unit had to be drafted in to deal with persistent anti-social behaviour in Canada Water seems indicative of the biggest problem with policing right now resources.

Rather than being able effectively to get a handle on issues before they spiral out of control, it seems that the Met can only respond urgently to top priority crimes, leaving other issues to smoulder on until the fire has well and truly broken out.

Anti-social behaviour isn’t just loud parties and a few litter louts - in this case it’s targeted attacks on businesses, vandalism, reported thefts, and violence. Fireworks are incredibly dangerous - as the young woman who had one launched at her face knows.

In this case, residents have been very open with police about identifying who is responsible, and have complained for years about the worsening situation generally in Canada Water. Apparently a new group has decided to get in on the action - presumably because they’ve seen their pals get away with it for so long. The kids behind the violence don’t seem to be particularly bothered about being caught on camera, in broad daylight, terrorising Canada Water.

Apparently those responsible have been identified and all have received ‘home visits’, with one ringleader brought into a station to answer some questions. Police have also dismissed reports minors were not being arrested due to their age.

Either way you do have to wonder why, years on, so little progress has been made.

Cathedral’s cat ‘controversy’ Controversy has attached itself to an unlikely source: Southwark Cathedral’s decision to have a memorial service for their beloved cat, Doorkins Magnificat.

The church was holding a live-streamed thanksgiving service in memory of Doorkins, who died earlier this month, as the News went to press.

She will be buried in consecrated ground at the Cathedral.

Among those voicing discomfort at the move is Giles Fraser, rector of St Mary in Newington.

“Perhaps I’m wrong, but I do feel ever so slightly uncomfortable with this,” he says.

Others have said the move is insensitive because during the pandemic some have been unable to hold funerals in churches.

But one Cambridge chaplain confesses online to a similar service.

On the topic of animals, residents in Rotherhithe have reported seeing clear breaches of the Covid rules in the streets.

The gang of rule-breakers have been spotted in numbers of more than six, flouting the guidance.

They have so far out-foxed the authorities, however, as they are all foxes.

Should any councillors be wondering what to do if they ever step down from the roles, an example has come from a veteran exrepresentative up the north.

Showcasing their fourth production since lockdown, the Eagle pub presents Next Thing You Know, a youthful musical (all the cast are 2020 graduates), with the book

by Ryan Cunningham, and music and lyrics by Joshua Salzman, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor...

Faced with the challenge of making life decisions, this cast of four twentysomethings sing an eclectic range of songs throughout this musical, covering sizeable issues such as career choice and committing to relationships, to more frivolous matters like drinking, smoking and dating.

Providing a perfect environment for characters to explore their angst is the imaginative decision to base the musical around a New York cocktail bar that doubles up as an apartment and workspace. Complete with neon pink flamingos, palm plants, an inky black dance floor and iconic American imagery, this foursome repeat conversations taking place all over the city.

Waverley (Bessy Ewa), in keeping with her name, spends her time wavering.

Pinning hopes on romantic commitment from boyfriend Darren, (Nathan Shaw) audiences witness this fledgling’s lack of self-belief and resignation to remain in the nest, forever working in the cocktail

bar as she sings, ‘All I want is for it to stay this way’. Quite the opposite is sassy friend, nightclub singer Lisa (Amelia Atherton), imploring Waverley to seize her moment, singing beautifully to her, ‘It’s your time, I’m waiting for mine’.

Comedy moments are sprinkled around: laddish Luke (Callum Henderson) climbs the stairs with his latest conquest declaring, ‘If I’d known you live on the 5th floor, I’d have taken someone else home’.

Later he clues up recently separated Darren as he sings sardonically of, ‘The best way to get a girl - is to get a girl’; and, ‘you’ve got to applaud this sick trick played

by God’. Henderson really shines while singing a wonderful number about the grip cigarettes have.

Simple as this musical’s storyline is, it’s packed with superb lyrical numbers and sung with a quality and confidence you’d expect from more experienced performers. The cast shone, their varied personalities lending the play depth and interest.

A wonderful, entertaining night out.

Gatsby’s Masquerade Ball Seeing as 2020 has not gone as planned it seems only right to don a sparkly dress, grab a glass of champagne and return to the 1920s for some Jazz Age revelry. writes Rosie O’Connell...

The grim realities of the world outside are, of course, never too far away with face masks and hand sanitisers aplenty, though the masks hardly seem out of place at Gatsby’s Mansion, merely add to the masquerade.

Starting off (socially distanced) in the grand art deco designed bar and central space we are immediately introduced to our narrator Nick Carraway in the midst of one of Gatsby’s notorious parties. He is presently joined by the rest of the cast for an energetic Charleston that makes the room shake and the audience becomes naturally familiarised with the characters in attendance.

From this point on, pockets of guests

are invited by the actors to join them in smaller side rooms where each group gets their own story additions.

While previous renditions of this immersive experience would allow the audience to roam the different sets and rooms and stumble upon various interactions with the actors, the Covid-Safe restrictions mean just that - it is more restricted.

It is, nonetheless, hard to not feel as though you are missing out by not exploring those areas that are off limits, even though it seems to be planned out in such a way that no matter your seat for the evening you will be whisked away at some point.

And the majority of the narrative unfolds in that central bar space.

That said, for someone perhaps not as familiar with the plot, I do wonder how unclear all of this might be.

Craig Hamilton rose to the challenge as the eponymous Gatsby and gave a suave and smiling, yet melancholic detached performance,

and Lucinda Turner’s Daisy was the perfect balance of self-absorbed but still somehow enchanting. Beyond the leading roles, Ivy Corbin as Jordan Baker has unmatched energy throughout the whole evening and Lucas Jones’ George Wilson is tragic and heartfelt.

The evening drew to an end with the feeling that actors and audience alike were truly thrilled and grateful to be in a performance space again.

While it is not the open, free-roaming experience of before, they have maintained the glitz and glamour of Fitzgerald’s 1920s in a way that makes it well worth a step outside of reality for a few hours.

The Great Gatsby is on at a secret Mayfair location until January 31st.

EIGHty years ago there lived a rector at St Peter’s church in Walworth whose bravery and leadership matched his ability with a pen.

During the Blitz the church became an extraordinary focal point for the area. Its cavernous crypt was the most sought-after sanctuary over any Anderson shelter during the daily raids, and no doubt its presence preserved many families’ lives.

But as its rector from 1937 to 1944, the Reverend John Gabriel Markam recalled in his scarcely circulated memoirs that St Peter’s saw its fair share of disasters.

Markham’s memoirs first paint a picture of Walworth as a working class district of 11,000, where rows of terraced houses sprung up along what was Walworth Common in the 1820’s.

It was Markham who volunteered the church crypt to the authorities as a public shelter, just as it had been in World War One. It was first designated to shelter for 230 before the first airraid sirens rang on September 2, 1939.

The crypt ran the length of the church and its insides were supported with four aisles of brick arches supporting the six-inch thick ceiling of fifteen foot blocks of York stone. And there was no water or electricity inside.

“We had all been indoctrinated into this idea that it would all start with a massive bombing of London,” Markam wrote with a touch of humility. But the following months, he said, came to be known as the “phoney war” and the people’s urgency “slipped away” as the sirens fell on deaf ears.

In July 1940, Markham wrote, “the Battle of Britain began”. He neglects to give an exact date, but he says the air raids started “on a brilliant sunny day with the distant rumbling of antiaircraft guns. The sirens wailed… the crypt from then on held anything between 600 and 900”.

What he most loathed about the nightly raids was the “continual drone” of aircraft and “the crash of bombs preceded by their eerie descending whistle and whoosh” which would last from 6pm until 6am. He vividly remembers treading delicately over bodies sleeping in the crypt “like sardines” lying on carpets, blankets and mattresses, while some slept in deck chairs or lay on narrow wooden benches.

But on October 28, the church took a direct hit, and Markham relives the chaos that ensued. From outside in the church yard he saw two bombs crash through the ceiling and “orange flashes” erupt from the windows.

He loathed the crash of bombs preceded by their eerie descending whistle and whoosh “Then I heard a confused murmur from the crypt, and a dusty figure struggled among the sandbags in the doorway at the steps leading to the shelter,” he said.

Markham gave an estimate of 200 casualties to the telephonist, and began leading the rescue effort with doctors and wardens to get the buried civilians out, and into a make-shift triage at the neighboring school.

Next morning there were new estimates of 250 seriously hurt and 70 killed, later confirmed to be 67 dead – including an 83-year-old and a baby of 11 months.

Both “semi-armour piercing bombs” had exploded on the floor of the crypt, having gone through the church ceiling.

One had pierced straight through the church organ, sending shards of pipes everywhere, and detonated next to where a family of six had slept, “blowing them to pieces”.

The blast had “literally lifted the whole church, causing the brickwork to part” and it wasn’t for several

weeks until the church could be put to use. Despite the tragedy, Reverend Markham says St Peter’s remained the centre of his faithful congregation throughout the war.

“We were much more fortunate than the majority of the churches in the neighbourhood, which were either completely blown to pieces or burnt,” he concluded.

DULWICH HAMLET are out of the FA Cup after losing 1-0 at National League South rivals Eastbourne Borough in the fourth qualifying round last weekend.

James Hammond scored the only goal of the game in the 39th minute, ironically from the penalty spot after the Hamlet had progressed through the previous two rounds on penalties.

Gavin Rose's side rarely looked like clawing back that deficit, and their chances weren't helped when Kuagica David was sent off with 20 minutes left.

It is some consolation with matchday revenue still unavailable to them that Dulwich pocketed £3,125 as the losing side in the tie. Their FA Cup exploits this season have boosted their bank balance by a total of £12,125.

The visiting goalkeeper James Pardington was called into action in the thirteenth minute when he tipped over Charlie Walker's header from Dean Cox's cross.

Eastbourne are a hugely experienced side, with the likes of Cox and Chris Whelpdale who have over a combined 700 games in the Football League under their belts.

Jordan Higgs denied Whelpdale a chance when he cleared a cross as the hosts piled on the pressure.

Macey Malyon put the hosts ahead with 20 minutes left before Ross Morley's brace either side of Sam Ryan's 87th-minute wonder goal.

Jordan Samuel's last-minute consolation denied Stansfeld a clean sheet.

The result continued Stansfeld’s good form after the previous weekend's convincing 5-0 win over Meridan VP. A second-half goal-fest didn't look likely after a goal-less first period in wet, blustery conditions. Stansfeld battled hard in the opening 45 minutes with the Foxbury slope and the wind against them.

It all changed after the break with the elements in their favour.

Stansfeld were finally rewarded for their efforts in the 70th minute.

Freddie Cray hit a shot from long range that the Sutton goalkeeper couldn't hold on to, and Malyon finished from close in.

Stansfeld did not have to wait long for their second, as just six minutes later Morley picked up the ball just outside the Sutton area and he coolly slotted home.

Manager has message for lucky few in executive lounge

Social-distancing measures were in place and those supporters lucky enough to secure their seats received a video message from Gary Rowett who was self-isolating after testing positive for Covid-19 last Friday.

The last time fans were in the stands at The Den was on February 29 for the 1-1 draw against Bristol City.

The club plans to host another event when they face Huddersfield at home on Saturday.

Millwall said in a statement: “We are very grateful to the fans in attendance who followed all the Covid-secure measures impeccably throughout the day.

“There is another similar event for Saturday’s game against Huddersfield and hopefully these are the first few of many in the future while supporters are not permitted into grounds in the normal fashion.”

Meanwhile, the club announced it would provide meals for kids during half-term.

A statement read: “Millwall Community Trust and Millwall Supporters’ Club have united to provide 100 hot meals per day for children during this October halfterm.

The project will build on the summer programme, in which The Lions and its Community Trust provided 5,000 meals over the school holidays for children and their families. “’The work of the Community Trust, which we have witnessed first-hand, has been truly humbling,’ said Tom Gale from the MSC.

By Lucas Ball sport@southwarknews.co.uk NEWLY-APPOINTED joint assistant manager Alex Russell was pleased with Millwall Lionesses’ performance in their 4-1 victory over Stevenage Development in the Eastern Regional Women’s Football League Division One South, which saw them move to the top of the table last weekend.

Goals from Shannan Drewe and an Abbey Dell brace - as well as an own goal - gave the home side - at their changed venue of Well Hall - a comfortable victory over the team who sit bottom in the table, picking up

their second victory of the season.

Russell was impressed by his side’s improved performance and was especially pleased that the switch from a 5-3-2 to a 5-2-3 paid off.

“Any win, no matter what, is always a bonus but to put the hard work in in training throughout the week and to see that pay off is always good,” Russell said.

“So far, a 3-5-2 - as [manager] Katie [Whitmore] calls it - means that your wing-backs are your only width, whereas today your wing-backs and wingers provide width, so if your wing-backs don’t get forward as much, they don’t have to as there’ll still be some creativity in that wide area.

“Shannan Drewe scored with a

superb effort from the wide area, she saw the goalkeeper off her line and put one over the top of her.

“The formation today will be something that the girls are familiar with having played a 3-4-3 last season, meaning that their roles haven’t really changed from there. They were coached into a high press last season and that’s been replicated today. The new system offers good balance and with the wing-backs not being your only width, it’s a bit more difficult for the [opposition] back-line to mark.”

The co-assistant manager, working with Nick Farrell, was also delighted players got more minutes in their legs as they work their way back from injury. That included back-up

goalkeeper Larissa Miller who came on late on for Millie Carter.

Russell added: “What Alyssa [Miranda] brings to the side is bundles of energy. Playing the sort of shape we did today, you need your midfielders to never switch off, keep running and give it their all until the 90th minute. That’s exactly what she did.

“Larissa has travelled up and down the country - literally up and down.

To have that sort of character, to not mind travelling with the squad and being supportive of Millie as well as being competitive with her for the shirt is admirable - hats off to her.

“It’s good for her to get out there and get some minutes. She was also

forced into a couple of saves and managed to keep a clean sheet while she was on the pitch. She’ll take that away as a boost to her confidence.

“Libby as a player but also as a person is pivotal. You’ve got to have her in the side. What she brings isn’t coachable in terms of her voice and her leadership skills - not only as captain - but she brought that to the side last season.

“Getting her back in there and getting her to last the full 90 helped us to see the game out. Last week, we switched off when Libby didn’t play the full 90.”

It was a frustrating afternoon for Millwall - Scott Malone can’t believe his miss

Four days earlier, the Lions had comfortably dispatched Luton Town in their best performance of the campaign. However, for large parts against Barnsley, they looked disjointed and clearly suffering with the absence of their boss.

But we’ve seen this against Barnsley previously. It doesn’t appear to matter what season, group of players, venue or even weather conditions, it feels like the South Yorkshire outfit are always out to get Millwall.

It’s now just five points collected in their previous nine league matches against Barnsley – the other draw coming at Oakwell post-lockdown, while Millwall’s only victory since November 2013 came courtesy of goals from Lee Gregory and Ben Marshall back in the early part of 2018 when they were chasing the play-offs under Neil Harris.

But in truth, during a dire opening 45 minutes, the visitors were every bit as poor. They arrived in Bermondsey without a win since avoiding relegation on the final day of last season and performed like a team that were set up to frustrate Millwall. Frustrate them they did – the Lions failed create anything of note early on.

Jake Cooper heads in the equaliser Wallace was preferred against both Wycombe and Luton, was required to show a great amount of bravery to block Callum Brittain’s goal-bound strike that was travelling at speed.

Walton was then forced to race out and beat Jed Wallace to a loose ball.

In a contest where a moment of magic appeared the most likely source of a breakthrough, Alex Mowatt provided exactly that, with a bit of interest.

Jake Cooper’s tame header wasn’t one of his best moments, but in his defence, no one - among the few - inside The Den could have envisaged the Barnsley captain producing what he did next.

Mowatt scored a stunning free-kick against Millwall for Leeds United some six seasons ago but topped that effort this time around.

It needs to be something special to beat Bart Bialkowski nowadays, and the sheer ferociousness of Mowatt’s strike epitomised that. He controlled well before lashing home a stunning

volley into the top right-hand corner to stun the Lions. But they weren’t stunned for long as just 90 seconds later Cooper somehow ensured there was a first half with two goals in it, when for the majority, just one seemed optimistic.

Fitting in with the pattern of the game, the Tykes conceded a cheap corner and then an even cheaper equaliser. Connor Mahoney’s delivery was on the money to the back post – with Cooper profiting this time around, climbing highest to nod home his first goal since the final-day victory over Huddersfield Town last season despite Walton’s best efforts.

Millwall were delayed in coming out for the second half. But whatever went on in that Lions dressing room had the desired effect.

Wallace almost caught Walton out from a long-range free-kick, forcing the Tykes shotstopper to tip over for a corner. But while Rowett’s men

couldn’t profit from that resulting set-piece, the turnaround was almost complete just before the hour-mark.

Wallace had been quiet by his own high standards, but whatever form he’s in, give him time and space at your peril.

He produced a delicious centre to Mason Bennett, who looked favourite to net his first goal as a permanent Millwall player, but Walton somehow tipped his first-time volley onto the post. The post was still shaking by the time Malone’s looping header came back off the bar as the Lions finally began to play like a team that have serious top-six aspirations this season.

But in an almost very typical Barnsley-against-Millwall moment, the Tykes were a wonderful one-handed save from Bialkowski from heading back to Oakwell with the points – the Pole using all of his 6ft4ins frame to scramble across and stop Herbie Kane’s free-kick, which looked like it was creeping into the top corner.

There was even more drama to follow, though. As the clock ticked towards 90 minutes, Wallace found substitute Kenneth Zohore with a similar delivery to the Bennett one, and the on-loan West Brom striker connected perfectly, but Walton pulled off another stunning save to ensure that Barnsley left The Den with at least one point – two fewer than on their previous three visits to SE16.

It felt like two points dropped, but just one defeat from their opening seven Championship matches represents an impressive start. Millwall must perform far better if they’re to beat the likes of Norwich and Reading in the coming weeks, but in previous seasons they might have lost a game like this, so it’s progress in that sense.

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett said the club's decision to put the entire first-team coaching staff into self-isolation was "the right thing to do" - considering "the bigger picture".

Rowett tested positive for Covid-19 last Friday and missed the games against Barnsley and Preston.

Rowett, assistant Adam Barrett and the rest of the coaching staff will not be at The Den this weekend against Huddersfield.

Lions technical coach Joe Carnall also tested positive, with Millwall making a statement on Tuesday confirming two more positive tests and that under-23 manager Kevin Nugent, senior skipper Alex Pearce and player-coach Shaun Williams would be looking after firstteam affairs.

Rowett had mild symptoms when he woke on Friday morning but felt "absolutely fine" a day later.

The Lions manager gave the teamtalk ahead of the Barnsley game through Zoom and was in contact with Barrett throughout the contest.

But Barrett is also now self-isolating, leaving Millwall in an unfamiliar position.

"With my positive test and then a further positive test we just felt as though it was right thing to do," Rowett told the News. "From a health

perspective there's obviously a bigger picture. It's not just about the team and the club and what-not.

"So the club felt it was the right thing to do - as difficult a decision as it was.

"Then it was a case of who do we think can go and lead the team and give them the right kind of motivation.

"Again, bear in mind we're still giving messages to the team and preparing from afar.

"We felt the voice needed to be as consistent as possible and obviously Nuge has been with us through it all.

"Pearcey is a natural leader of the side and the club captain. And Willo is on the coaching staff as well. So we felt it was better to keep it as consistent as possible.

"That's what we've done. The aim is to get through it and get positive results."

Millwall released a statement last Friday night confirming Rowett's positive test. He didn't take training ahead of the Tykes clash.

Rowett explained: "I woke up feeling a little bit like I was getting the start of a flu, where you just feel a little bit

"And then from there and haivng the test and testing positive, if I'm being honest, 24 hours later I felt pretty much normal.

"I had a little bit of a bunged-up nose but other than that I had no other symptoms, I actually felt fine.

"I'm sat here now [Tuesday afternoon] in my apartment working.

We're trying to prepare for games as best we can. But I feel absolutely fine."

Rowett and Carnall - whose family homes are in the Midlands - share an apartment in the capital.

Rowett revealed it is his coach who gets more emotional watching the live stream.

"I'm not too bad, Joe does most of the frustrated shouting in the household

at the moment," Rowett said.

"We're both staying seperately and we linked up so we could talk to each other during the game. We had iFollow as a back-up which is around 30 seconds behind, but we had a live feed of the game.

"We had a phone line to the bench so we were able to help with the decision-making process throughout the games.

"In a strange way it was less emotional. Normally if you're on the touchline you're getting involved with the fourth official, with everything going on in the game.

"The reality is all you can do on the sideline is try to help the team as best you can, there's no benefit to getting frustrated.

"But me not being there, I have the

responsibility of offering the team as much as I can objectively, so that's what we're trying to do."

Rowett is still preparing training sessions with his coaches and poring over footage ahead of this Saturday's game against Huddersfield at The Den. After the addition of Kenneth Zohore from West Brom on loan during the last transfer window Rowett has a wealth of attacking options, despite the continued absence of Troy Parrott.

In their fixtures against Wycombe, Luton and Barnsley - when the side claimed seven points in a week - they had 51 attempts on goal but only scored five times.

Rowett wants his team to be much more clinical.

He added: "We've spoken about trying to be more attacking this season in terms of creating more chances and scoring more goals.

"If you remember last season, we had a spell where set-pieces were our main threat, we didn't score many goals in open play for a period.

"I think what we're finding this season is we're actually creating a lot of chances. If I take the Wycombe game, the Luton game, the Barnsley game, we created an awful lot of chances in them and we've seen some good attacking play.

"That's what you hope for and then what you've got to try and do is convert those chances.

"We've certainly got the players and the options to do that. I think at some point we're going to get our rewards."

“I don’t think it’s an easy week leading up to deadline for anybody, not least the players that haven’t played as much in the first four or five games as they’d have liked,” Rowett said.

“There’s always that question mark, am I still going to be here, what’s going to happen?

“But I think once the window shuts it gives a little bit of clarity to people.

“You’ve got to go and perform and that’s

really the competition that we need.

“I’ve spoken to the squad about it. We’ve got good players and every weekend, every mid-week there are going to be some disappointed people not starting or not in the eighteen.

“But we’ve got so many games we’re only going to be as good as every one of those players, and every one of those players is going to have to be ready to step up and perform when they get the chance.

“Before Wycombe [after the international break] the team wasn’t changed because we lost to Swansea, it was changed because I felt those players would suit the game and affect the game.

“What we know is that not all the players are going to be able to play every single game at their best physically. That would be almost impossible.

“We have to change it and the players have to be ready. They’re paid to be fit, they’re paid to be ready to do their jobs when called upon. They have to stay mentally strong when they’re not involved because the week after they could be starting.

“That’s been the message.”

Playing duo step up amid Covid chaos

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL’S PREPARATIONS for their games against Preston and Huddersfield this week were thrown into chaos with the confirmation of two more positive Covid-19 tests among their coaching staff.

Millwall manager Gary Rowett will be watching from his apartment in Canary Wharf games is probably five per cent me and 95 per cent other people anyway.

"I'm not sat there doing everything and therefore if I'm not there the whole thing collapses. Ultimately if I'm not there then Ads steps up with the same support network I would have from the staff.

"It's one we've just had to react to and we're still preparing the team. We're doing exactly the same things but it's just a different voice on the touchline.

"That is just the reality. I pick the team and set the tactics and then we work on all the set-piece stuff remotely.

"Adam usually does set-pieces so it's no different. It's not like because we're not there someone else is making completely different decisions. It doesn't really work like that.

"It will be a combination. I'd expect Pearcey to be very, very vocal, as he is normally. I'd expect Shaun Williams to be the voice of reason in the background.

"I'd expect Nuge to be bring that little bit of experience.

"They have a huge number of professional games between them.

It's obviously an issue because we're not there, but hopefully it won't be too much of a distraction for the players."

Boss Gary Rowett and technical coach Joe Carnall tested positive last week and went into ten days of selfisolation.

After the latest positive tests, Professional Development manager Kevin Nugent, senior skipper Alex Pearce and player-coach Shaun Williams took charge against Preston on Wednesday night and are currently preparing the team to face Huddersfield this Saturday.

The club released a statement on Tuesday.

“Millwall Football Club can confirm that two further members of its first team coaching staff have tested positive for Covid-19,” it read.

“In the interest of health and safety to them, support staff, players and appropriate stakeholders, the club has therefore decided that all other senior coaching personnel should also self isolate in accordance with government guidelines.

“Uunder-23s manager Kevin Nugent, player/coach Shaun Williams and club captain Alex Pearce will oversee Millwall’s next two Championship matches before Gary Rowett’s return on Monday, November 2.”
