buddy scheme introduced to tackle homelessness

2,680 people slept rough for the first time between April and June

A buddy scheme where people who have experienced homelessness support rough sleepers to get off the streets is being rolled out in Southwark.

Street Buddies, run by housing association Riverside, is an awardwinning scheme that has run in Westminster for seven years. Last year the scheme helped around a third of the people it worked with get into accommodation; focusing on helping the longest term rough sleepers.

City Hall has given the project £212,000 to expand into five new London boroughs: Southwark, Lambeth, the City, Tower Hamlets and Kensington and Chelsea.

Street Buddies are currently working with outreach teams to find people sleeping rough, but also with the hostels, hotels and other emergency accommodation provided during lockdown to ensure that newly housed rough sleepers continue on the same path.

As the News has reported, more than 500 rough sleepers were housed by Southwark Council since the beginning of lockdown, after an unprecedented commitment to

end homelessness during the pandemic.

From March onwards, all 33 of London’s local authorities have joined with City Hall to find homes for 5,882 people sleeping rough across the entire city. By August just six people were believed to be sleeping rough in Southwark.

But despite these efforts homelessness has not gone away. Shockingly, 2,680 people slept rough for the first time in London between April and June 2020; a 77 per cent increase in new rough sleepers in London during lockdown.

- the Combined Homelessness and Information Network.

It is believed the economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis is behind more people being pushed into homelessness for the first time - a figure likely to rise given the end of the evictions ban.

The government has already given around a billion to local authorities across the country, but this has failed to meet the gap between rising costs and declining incomes - especially after a decade of austerity.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Kingswood Blues FC were crowned the national Community Cup Champions 2020 at Saturday’s KickOff@3 tournament in Bromley.

The team from West Dulwich’s Kingswood Estate beat runners up

St Matthew’s Project U16s, after competing against teams from all over the country.

Local MP Helen Hayes was in attendance to watch the final match with both teams from her Dulwich and West Norwood constituency.

“Huge achievement for our young people - congratulations and thanks to everyone involved,” she said.

Southwark Police also sent their congratulations on twitter, sharing the message: “A massive well done to all those involved in organising yet another brilliant community event.”

KickOff@3 was set up by police officer Michael Wallace as a way of building the relationship between the police and young people through football.

One had to be cut out of car

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A driver has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a collision with a police car in Camberwell, which left four officers hospitalised and another injuried.

The shocking scene took place at around 1.30pm Tuesday afternoon around the Elmington Estate, near Brisbane Street. One officer had to be cut out of their car by the Fire Brigade.

Witnesses have told the News that two police cars were chasing another car at speed, before colliding. The officer driving a CID car remains in hospital with potentially life-changing injuries.

Another officer still remains in hospital but in a less serious condition.

Two of the other officers in the car have since been discharged with minor injuries. An officer also sustained minor injuries in the arrest of the driver, who was also taken to hospital for injuries.

In total five officers were injured, alongside the driver of the car.

Council approves more road blocks and changes

“Enquiries to locate him are ongoing,” said the Met. “They’ve all been taken to King’s College Hospital,” said an eyewitness yesterday, who didn’t want to be named. “One of them was in a critical condition, I think three of them had to be cut out.

“I saw them pumping her chest. It’s shocking, it was unbelievable, it was on a residential estate and it was on a bend.

“There was a car chase and the police clipped the other car involved.”

The witness said that one of the men being chased went into an ambulance in handcuffs after being arrested, while the other got away.

Another witness, Hayley, says she saw the immediate aftermath of what happened. “There was a police chase outside my house and the CID car got the full impact,” she said.

“The car they were chasing didn’t have hardly any damage.” She added: “Never seen so many police, ambulance, fire fighters in my life.”

Police are now appealing for witnesses to help them investigate the circumstances of the collision.

Doctor turns her hand to the make-up business

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The latest round of post lockdown road closures aimed at encouraging more walking and cycling to work have been approved by Southwark Council.

The decision, formalised on Sunday, will see pavements widened, one-way systems, road blocks, no right turns, and new cycling lanes put in four key arterial routes: Peckham Rye, Great Suffolk Street, Bermondsey Street, Lower Road, and the south section of Burbage Road.

Many of the changes have already been brought in under emergency COVID-19 legislation.

In Peckham Rye, the plans include a bus gate between Nunhead Crescent and Nunhead Lane.

A modal filter will be placed in Bermondsey Street, between Morocco Street and Whites Grounds, along with cycling improvements.

Changes in Great Suffolk Street would see one-way only systems and banned turns in numerous surrounding streets.

Dulwich’s Burbage Road will see buses, cycles and taxis only northbound, from the junction of Gallery Road.

Lower Road will have Cycleway 4 installation, using temporary materials.

Beautonomy, founded by Kiemu Salmon and her partner Tom, moved into its Arch Co space at the height of the pandemic and say they remain optimistic about its future as people still want to look good over Zoom.

The online business gives customers the option to design and customise make-up palettes and their packaging.

Originally conceived as a collaboration with a large corporation,

which then pulled out, Kiemu and her husband decided to set up the company themselves - even though it meant Kiemu leaving her job as an anaesthetic doctor in the NHS. She explained: “I loved my job but I love this now. The inspiration came from the fact that most makeup companies promote the idea ‘be yourself’ but then sell you all the same stuff.

“We recognised there is a new generation of make-up lovers who are really creative and have lots of ideas.

"It’s a lot of hard work, long hours, but with loads of reward in terms of feeling like we are working towards putting something empowering into

the world and doing a great job.

“Our team is growing and they’re happy, and we get loads of great feedback from customers, it’s a great feeling to be building that.”

Although they don’t trade from a shop, the company was still impacted

by COVID-19 through interruptions to their supply chains which left them unable to meet demand. As a result they could operate for five months of the year.

Kiemu says the company is focused on supporting Black Lives Matter and anti-racism causes. Its chosen charities are NAACP Legal Defence and Education Fund in the USA and the Stephen Lawrence Charitable

Trust in the UK. They have also hired a young black woman intern in a pilot scheme they hope will become longterm - and help generate employment opportunities for people in Southwark.

“I am a mixed-race black person and these are not new issues to us but it’s a subject we care about and felt strongly that we wanted to contribute to,” Kiemu explained.

“We tried to find ways to do that, and wrote a letter that was sent out with 2,000 orders to all our customers, making them aware we support the Black Lives Matter movement and saying if you are interested, here are resources you can use to find out more.

“We told them about the charities we support and highlighted the shift in our own way of talking about racism.

“It no longer feels enough to say I’m not racist, so we are challenging ourselves to demonstrate our antiracist values more consistently.

“In the past, I might have shied away from difficult conversations, which can be draining.

“But I no longer feel that it is ok to compartmentalise in this way.

“So I am trying to do better by having those difficult conversations as and when issues come up.”

Despite being a young company operating in challenging times, she is optimistic they can get through the pandemic.

“Even in all desperate times, people want to wear make-up because it makes them feel better.

“With Zoom culture and the mask culture, eye make-up is even more important than other products, and we specialise in eye shadows, so we veer to optimism.”

Eleven to twenty buildings in Southwark have cladding unlikely to meet building regulations

Residents had to move out of L&Q's Arch Street block in 2019 over cladding safety concerns

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk More than three years after the Grenfell tower disaster less than half of Southwark’s buildings with dangerous cladding have had the materials removed, new government data reveals.

A report published by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government into the progress made in removing Aluminium Composite Material (ACM) cladding shows there are believed to be eleven to twenty buildings in the borough with cladding unlikely to meet building regulations.

Between six and ten of them are yet to have remedial work finished.

Around a million and a half leaseholders across the UK are now believed to be ‘trapped’ in their unsellable high-rise homes with questions over who will pay for the spiralling costs of urgent safety works.

Buildings in the borough found to have unsafe cladding include L&Qs Arch Street - which residents were forced to

leave in 2019.

This year developers were given planning permission to remove cladding from part of the Bermondsey Square development, and Buxton Homes submitted a planning application to remove insulation from a block in Great Suffolk Street as it did not meet fire safety standards.

Although none of Southwark Council's blocks over eighteen metres are fitted with ACM cladding, as part of its rolling fire safety programme the local authority is testing the fascia construction of all blocks over this height, and will undertake works to address any identified issues.

The council is also replacing wooden sections on a number of blocks across the borough.

In parliament, Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes called on the Prime Minister to urgently fix delays in processing EWS1 certificates - without which leaseholders cannot sell.

Introduced after Grenfell, an EWS1 certificate acts as a guarantee that a building’s external wall system,

including cladding and insulation, is safe for residents.

Many mortgage lenders across the country have made this certificate a condition of lending, but a shortage of trained surveyors and the massive number of affected blocks has created huge delays. Although the government has said it expects this work to be completed by the end of next year, it has been estimated certifying every at-risk block - at the current rate of progress could take a decade.

Hayes told Boris Johnson: “My constituent, Luke Thomas, has recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

He urgently needs to move closer to his family for support.

“Luke has a shared ownership flat in a low-rise building with wooden cladding, but he cannot sell it because mortgage lenders require an EWS1 certificate and Luke’s building does not have one.

“Estimates suggest that it could take ten years to certify every building affected, but Luke and hundreds of thousands of people like him cannot wait that long. When will the Prime Minister end this scandal?”

Johnson reiterated that the government needed to try to find mortgage support for leaseholders in affected homes, and ‘get on’ with removing cladding.

Remembrance Sunday service is cancelled Bermondsey’s community-led memorial stopped over COVID

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A community-led Remembrance Sunday service at Bermondsey’s West Lane memorial will not go ahead this year because of the coronavirus restrictions.

Many residents in the SE16 area and further afield turn out to pay their respects on the day every year, as the memorial pays tribute to those from Bermondsey and Rotherhithe who lost their lives in war.

Bermondsey resident, Gary Magold, had organised a Remembrance Sunday service at the memorial every year for at least a decade.

But this year he says it cannot go ahead on November 8 as normal because of the risk of spreading coronavirus.

“I’m quite gutted about it really,” said the 56-year-old. “I know what an important community event it is.

“I’ve had emails from people out of the area who come every year to pay their respects, to lay something on the memorial.

“We just have to be grown-up about it, and say ‘not this year.’”

Mr Magold, who also co-runs the Peek Freans’ museum in Bermondsey’s Biscuit Factory, said

the risk assessments and conditions placed on an organised gathering under the Covid rules made it impossible.

He added that many of the attendees to the memorial service were elderly, making the risk of coronavirus even more severe.

“It’s just the fact that if you want to put a tribute on the memorial, you have to do it on your own steam,” he said, rather than attending an organised gathering.

“There’s just all the rules and regulations which sort of makes it impossible.

“When the world’s back on its axis again, we will regroup.”

Other services which traditionally commemorate the fallen may also not go ahead this year, amid an ever-changing set of coronavirus restrictions.

London was last week placed into Tier Two of the Government’s new Covid restrictions, which ban households meeting indoors, and keep a ‘rule of six’ for gatherings outdoors.

Politicians across the spectrum have instead called for the nation to stand on their doorsteps for two minutes at 11am in remembrance.

The national service at the Cenotaph will go ahead – but it is closed to the public for the first time in its history.

Teenager stabbed at Surrey Quays is now recovering say police

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A teenager who was stabbed in the chest, abdomen and arm in Surrey Quays car park on Friday is recovering, police say.

The eighteen-year-old’s condition is now thought to not be life-changing.

A person appeared in court on Monday charged with GBH in connection with the attack, which happened at around 12pm in the busy shopping centre car park.

Officers have thanked shoppers and staff at the shopping centre for rushing to the boy’s aid.

“The young man who was attacked in this terrible incident is recovering in hospital and fortunately his

condition is not considered lifechanging,” said Insp Tom Cornish.

“We are grateful for the prompt action of shopping centre staff who rendered vital First Aid before the police and ambulance arrived.

“This appears to have been an isolated incident with no wider risk to others who were not involved, but it was nevertheless very alarming.

“Thank you to the many members of the public who came forward as witnesses.”

Officers had authorised extra stop and search powers for swathes of Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays in the aftermath of the stabbing.

Extra patrols were also pledged, with police saying the victim’s family were being supported by officers.

black mould in council block built two years ago

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A mother living in Peckham’s Sylvan Grove council block has told of how despite being a twoyear old new build, her son’s bedroom is covered in black mould after constant leaks since February.

The new block, near Old Kent Road, was completed in 2018, with Southwark Council describing the flats as ‘built to the highest specification’.

Originally planned as a mix of shared ownership homes, 21 at social rent, and nine ‘affordable’ rentals, the entire development was then parched for council housing. All were offered first to residents of the Ledbury Estate who had to leave their homes due to gas safety fears.

But two years on resident Robyn West told the News that since a leak appeared in February in her son’s bedroom she has been forced to play a ‘cat and mouse game’ with Tooley Street’s repairs service.

In a series of videos posted on

Twitter, she walks through her four-year-old son’s room where the flooring - floorboards over concrete has almost turned entirely black after being sodden for months.

There are watermarks around the windows, above plug sockets now out of use, and a whole section of skirting board has crumbled away.

The problems are now spreading into her hallway and kitchen, with watermarks from leaks on her kitchen ceiling.

“They gave me two humidifiers but it doesn’t do anything but rack up a huge bill for me,” she said.

The problems are believed to be caused by an underfloor leaking pipe - but this doesn’t explain marks and leaks from above.

And even though the entire floor is mouldy, Ms West has been told only one section of it will be replaced.

“I've been round and round in circles. I’m told lie after lie, excuse after excuse. I’m sick of it, my son is always unwell,” she said.

Southwark Council have been approached for comment.

elephant shopping centre traders in former garages

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Elephant Arcade formally opened last Wednesday in the new retail space beneath Perronet House that used to be garages.

Eleven traders have now relocated after the shopping centre was closed, including tailors, computer repairs, a hair salon and haberdashery.

Councillor Johnson Situ, who holds the planning portfolio at Southwark Council, said: “We were delighted to see traders settled into their new premises at Elephant Arcade after all their hard work with the council and site managers to fit out the shops ready for opening.

“We have long been committed to supporting the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre traders and so it’s really exciting that this location in the heart of Elephant and Castle has

been put to good use, allowing small businesses to continue serving the needs of the local community.

“We wish them every success as they grow and thrive in their new home”.

Meanwhile over the last week work has begun on preparing the centre for demolition.

Keltbray, a civil engineering group, is first installing permanent hoarding before decommissioning and stripping out the building from the inside. Once this is complete, structural demolition will start with the low-rise buildings to the north of the site facing New Kent Road, before progressing south.

This work is expected to last through to summer 2021.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk One person was hospitalised after a ‘massive gas leak’ in Herne Hill’s Dorchester Court on Tuesday.

A fire crew, paramedics and gas engineers were on site in the Herne Hill Road art deco estate after reports of a carbon monoxide leak from temporary boilers.

Residents say they could smell gas for days beforehand. Around 50 people had left the four-storey building before the brigade arrived at 3.11pm, with two rescue units from Lewisham and Euston stations.

They left at 4.48pm the same day after ‘elevated readings of carbon monoxide’ were found and then isolated by gas engineers in the communal boiler. A sweep of the entire building did not find any other leaks.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed it had treated two people at the scene and taken one person to hospital, after being called at 3.01pm.

“We sent two ambulance crews, an incident response officer, a medic in a car and our hazardous area response teams,” a spokesperson said.

Pictures posted by residents online show a fire crew arriving and cordoning off the building.

“Property Partners were telling residents on the phone everything was fine at the same time fire brigade were evacuating blocks,” said a representative of Dorchester Court’s tenants union, which has been locked in a battle against its landlord over repairs for years .

The building is managed by Property Partners and owned by Manaquel Ltd, who deny claims by residents that they were not informed that there was a suspected leak.

Property Partners said SGN engineers arrived on site at 2pm, with the engineers in charge of the temporary boilers arriving at 3pm. They say the issue was fixed within two hours from that point.

In an email seen by the News, Property Partners told residents at 2.09pm that there was an ‘issue’ with the boilers but made no mention of a potential leak.

“We have just been advised by the consultants and the company appointed by them to replace the boilers that there

estate evacuated after ‘gas leak’

is an issue with the temporary boilers which are currently supplying heat and hot water to the estate.

“This may lead to a partial reduction of service tonight.

“We apologise for any potential inconvenience and are working with the consultants and engineers this afternoon to come to a resolution.”

This was followed up three hours later - at 4.56pm - with an email outlining that the gas had been turned off due to a ‘potential’ leak and advising anyone feeling unwell to seek help; but did not explicitly mention carbon monoxide poisoning.

“We would like to update you that National Grid attended site earlier this afternoon after a report of a potential gas leak, and are still on site now,” the email explained.

“The boilers have been turned off as a result of this and checks are currently underway, this includes checking each block.

“Until the investigations have taken place and all deemed safe the heating system will not be turned on.

“I understand residents have reached out to the ambulance service in the meantime and therefore we advise

that if anybody has been receiving the following symptoms to reach out to a paramedic for assistance - headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting.

“The gas supply to the estate has been turned off but we ask in the meantime for residents to ventilate their flats as best as possible by opening windows and doors to circulate fresh air flow.

“I will update you as soon as more substantial information has been relayed to me.

“Thank you all in the meantime for your patience and understanding whilst we carry out investigations.”

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson told the News: “Carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms can easily be confused with just feeling unwell, which is why CO poisoning is so dangerous, and so often missed.

“It’s really important to have a working carbon monoxide alarm in your home – fit them in all rooms containing solid fuel, gas or paraffin heaters.

“You can’t taste, see or smell CO fumes but it can kill in minutes.

“It’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning, and learn what to do if you suspect someone may be affected.”

Everyone aged 16 and over across England and Wales can download the app for free and play their part in combating the pandemic.

DOWNLOADING THE NHS COVID-19 app is a vital way in which we can all play our part in tracking the spread of the virus while protecting those we love.

Many across England and Wales have already downloaded the app, which includes a range of features, from inputting symptoms to quickly alerting you if you are at risk from coronavirus.

Everyone aged 16 and older can now download the app onto their smartphone for free.

It works by logging the time and distance a user has spent near other app users, so is able to alert them if that person subsequently tests positive.

Designed to the highest standards of data privacy and data security, it tracks the virus, not people.

The app doesn’t hold any personal information such as name, address or date of birth. And it only requires the first half of your postcode to ensure local outbreaks can best be managed.

For some features – such as booking a test – the app may require more information from the user, but only with their explicit consent.

The app cannot track your location. It doesn’t need to know who anyone is or where they are.

As you come into contact with other app users, your phones automatically exchange random codes that alert the app if you have been near anyone for more than 15 minutes and at a distance of less than two metres.

If someone later reports a positive test result, the app sends an anonymous alert to anyone who may be at risk.

Helping in crisis PARENTS WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES A new project supporting the children whose parents suffer from mental health problems launched in Southwark last week.

KidsTime Southwark is a partnership between charity Our Time, Southwark Council, and the Mental Health Foundation with support from the National Lottery.

It will focus support on families where one or both parents have a diagnosed mental illness.

A series of workshops will bring together families across the borough to talk about mental health and provide emotional and practical support.

Described as the first of its kind in the country, the sessions will be online for now but move to face-to-face as soon as is safe given COVID-19.

Neil Coyle, whose mother has suffered from schizophrenia since his early childhood, has backed the programme, saying with the ongoing impact of the pandemic, its work is needed more than ever.

“KidsTime Southwark will be an amazing support system for children and families in the borough and I thank the Mental Health Foundation and Our Time for their efforts to get this brilliant initiative off the ground at a very difficult time and when we know young

people’s mental health has suffered as a result of COVID-19 and the lockdown,” the Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP said.

“When I was younger mental health was not something that was spoken about openly, but the stigma and inability to talk about these issues has

a particularly detrimental impact on the children who have parents with mental health conditions.

“KidsTime Southwark will tackle this by creating a meaningful space to allow children to speak about how they are feeling and what they are experiencing, with the intention of providing

immediate support and boosting those children’s life chances longer-term”.

The workshops are run by a small team trained by Our Time, and are attended by parents and children together.

The aim is to improve communication and help increase kids’ self-confidence using drama and discussion in a safe

protective screen with in-built gloves - and after speaking with the school, year thirteen student Sam Williams was put forward to create a prototype.

After proving successful, and meeting regulatory requirements, the screens are now being rolled out across London.

“I had been really nervous about going back to work because, as we all now know, medical staff are disproportionately affected by COVID-19,” the consultant said.

“I’m going to be a grandfather soon which gave me an additional level of anxiety.

“When I saw the screen made up with the modifications, I quickly realised that this piece of kit would make me feel safer and considerably reduce the risk of infection.

“I couldn’t have got better results if I’d gone to a professional design business.”

He added that the company has a major backlog of thousands of the procedures that had been scheduled since March. It is hoped that the clinics will be able to perform 350 procedures per month across south-east London using the screen.

Meanwhile, Sam is taking a gap year

and hopes to get an apprenticeship with a construction firm.

Describing the design process, Sam said: “The initial drawings and ideas were good. I made alterations to the designs and created a 1:5 scale model using the school’s facilities and materials.

“There were many challenges; the screen had to be able to be kept really clean so there couldn’t be bolts or crevices, there had to be smooth surfaces everywhere and everything had to be easy to sanitise.

“For my A level project, I made a fire pit so this was at the opposite end of the

SIXTH FORMER CREATES SCREEN FOR DOCTORS A Dulwich College Sixth Form student has helped create a COVID-19 secure screen for ear nose and throat doctors to use during medical examinations allowing thousands of on-hold procedures to safely go ahead.

The innovation is now helping routine and planned appointments get back on track across London. Eighteenyear-old Sam, who finished the Sixth Form this year, was going into school helping make visors and face masks in the school’s design and technology department when Plamen Donev, an ear nose and throat consultant from the NHS’ Communitas Clinics contacted the school. He asked if its design and technology department could help develop an idea for a specialist screen that would enable nasendoscopy procedures to go ahead.

A nasendoscopy is a test that looks at the inside of the nose, throat and larynx using a tiny camera. None of these operations had gone ahead since March due to the risks of COVID-19 transmission from sneezing.

Mr Donev provided some simple sketches for what he had in mind - a

space to explore their feelings and experiences - aiming to avoid problems reaching crisis point.

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A convicted murderer who confronted the London Bridge terrorist with a narwhal tusk will have his sentence reduced after an intervention from the Queen.

Steve Gallant will be considered for parole ten months early in recognition of his heroism. He was jailed in 2005 for the murder of ex-firefighter Barrie Jackson.

Mr Gallant had used a narwhal tusk from the wall of Fishmongers Hall to attack terrorist Usman Khan during the double stabbing last November.

Gallant had been attending a prisoner rehabilitation conference, as had killer

Jack Merritt Usman Khan, who had been previously jailed for a plot to blow up the London stock exchange.

After Khan stabbed and killed two coordinators at the event, Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones, Gallant chased Khan

onto London Bridge and he was shot dead by police.

The son of the firefighter whom Gallant murdered, Jack Jackson, reportedly told the Sunday Mirror: “I have mixed emotions – but what happened at London Bridge goes to show the reality that people can change.

“In my mind, Gallant has nearly done his time and if someone has undergone rehabilitation and change, which it seems he has, then it’s fair enough.

“Every time his name is mentioned it brings back memories for me, my brother and mum but it happened years ago. I was four at the time.”

The pardon has been welcomed by the father of Jack Merritt, who was killed by Usman Khan.

“Steve fully deserves this pardon, or reduction in sentence. It is fantastic,” David Merritt is also said to have told the paper.

“He was very close to Jack and he turned his life around and reformed. I am really pleased for him.”

Gallant could now appear before a Parole Board in June, where he could be freed.

A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: “The Lord Chancellor has granted Steven Gallant a Royal Prerogative of Mercy reducing his minimum tariff of 10 months in recognition of his exceptionally brave actions at Fishmongers’ Hall, which helped save people’s lives despite the tremendous risk to his own.”

More flats eyed for former Rotherhithe boozer site

Nine flats at the former boozer on 375 Rotherhithe Street were constructed after the pub was demolished.

Now the council has been notified that an extra four flats in an additional two storeys could be added onto the building.

Under what is called ‘permitted development’, formal planning permission may not be needed for the rooftop extension on the block, which is called the Benyamin Apartments.

Several leaseholders in the building have submitted their objections to the proposal, saying they had not been told of the plans in advance.

“When we purchased the lease, we had no knowledge of the works intended to be carried out and we received no notice by the freeholder at the commencement of the lease,” said one.

“Should we have been made aware at the time that this was the intention of the applicant, we would have most likely made a different choice on the purchase as this construction work will affect us greatly.”

A new exercise programme created by south London's Health Improvement Network has helped almost 20,000 people manage chronic pain - without extra medication.

ESCAPE-pain offers face-to-face and online exercises for people suffering with long-term joint pain. The rehabilitation programme is based around a progressive exercise regime tailored to each person.

It has now been rolled out nationally and, before the pandemic, had helped 19,300 people across 295 sites to selfmanage arthritic pain.

Musculoskeletal-related pain is the second most common reason for GP visits and accounts for approximately 20-30 per cent of all GP consultations in the UK. On top of reducing productivity at work, it also impacts on patients’ mental health and ability to do day-to-day tasks and keep fit and healthy.

The project has been so successful it won ‘MSK Initiative of the year’ at the Health Service Journal Value Awards.

Ann, 68, who says she is no longer in constant pain after starting the programme, said: “Osteoarthritis was really impacting on my daily life as I had to ask for help to do everyday tasks around the home.

“My life has significantly changed since I completed the course and I’ve continued to do the exercises and now I no longer have any pain and I live a very active life.”

The project was created by Professor Mike Hurley. A joint pain specialist, he believes this kind of intervention could help reduce reliance on strong painkillers.

“The judges were clearly impressed with the general ethos of the programme about self-management, its effectiveness and benefits that it brings to individuals and the healthcare system as a whole,” he said.

“We hope the award gives a boost to ESCAPE-pain that we believe can make a major contribution to the post-Covid-19 NHS ‘reset’.

Another project highlighted is Guy’s and St Thomas’ Youth Empowerment Skills (YES) programme, which supports people with Type 1 diabetes aged fourteen to nineteen, which won the HSJ Diabetes Care Initiative of the Year award.

Dr Dulmini Kariyawasam, a consultant at Guy’s and St.Thomas’ Foundation Trust, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been named as the winners in the Diabetes Care Initiative of the Year 2020.

Unable to hold its regular group meetings due to COVID-19, the trust is now holding online sessions with support from the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity.

Seventy-five-year-old Ted Thorne, from Bromley, had his prostate removed at Guy’s Cancer Centre in February 2018. A grandfather of two, he says the support group continues to help his whole family, including his wife, Susie.

“They have speakers come to cover a range of topics such as the diagnosis and what that means, what to expect from

surgical procedures, the psychological effect that these things have on a family, the physical repercussions and exercises,” he explained.

“We’ve found it very encouraging, meeting all the other people and learning from them.

“There are many different ways of treating prostate cancer and you hear all the different stories, and no two stories are the same.

“It’s sharing the experience and not being on your own with it, that’s the key.”

He added: “The virtual groups have been brilliant. There are cancer patients from all over and outside London, even from as far down as Folkestone and Southend.

“It’s like a family, it really is. The spouses are all involved because it impacts them as well, it impacts the whole family.

“That’s another reason the online meetings are so great, because the whole family can join in.

“If there was somebody who was worried about their husband dying from prostate cancer and they come into a meeting and see all the survivors on the screen, having a good time and a bit of fun and banter, it can put their minds at rest.”

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A scared fox who found herself trapped on a boat in a dock as the tide was rising on Saturday was rescued thanks to the joint efforts of the RSPCA and the Fire Brigade.

The little fox found itself stuck floating on an overturned boat in

Bermondsey’s St Saviour’s dock at around noon on Saturday, just as the tide was beginning to rise.

The scared animal actually fell into the water several times as crowds waited with baited breath for the RSPCA to rescue her.

The dock is currently covered in scaffolding for repairs, which firefighters and the RSPCA managed to use to rescue the stranded creature,

said witness Kathleen Ehrlich.

"Our guess is that she might have come along the foreshore, gotten on the boat and then been caught out as the tide started to come in,” she said.

“Members of the LFB from several surrounding fire stations as well as the RSPCA turned up to try to rescue the fox. I don’t know who called it in initially.

“She actually fell into the water several times in strong currents before the RSPCA were able to reach her.”

Rescuers used boards from the scaffolding on the dock to create a platform across the water to rescue the fox.

“It was really an amazing effort,” she added.

“The fox looked quite young and scared, but the RSPCA told us that they were going to warm the fox up and feed it and then release it, so I think it was going to be well looked after.”

Another witness, who goes by the name Timothy P, live-tweeted the daring rescue on social media as it happened. “’I’m pleased to report that the fox was saved – eventually – and the fire brigade got a round of applause from all the onlookers!” he said.

One Crystal Palace fraudster may have cost TfL ‘£1m in lost revenue’ Shaquille Moore

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A fraudster from Crystal Palace cost TfL in the region of one million pounds in lost revenue after running a fake Oystercard scheme.

Shaquille Moore was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison on Friday, September 25, after pleading guilty at Inner London Crown Court in August.

Between May and December 2018, the 27-year-old used the alias ‘Ben Franklin’ to sell fake 16+ Zip Oyster photocards - giving users half price fares or free travel - via social media.

On both 24 August and 11 September 2018, a TfL fraud investigator received two separate emails from

TfL employees reporting suspected fraudulent activities.

An investigation into the fake cards led back to Moore, who was arrested and charged with fraud by false representation by British Transport Police.

Detective Constable, Mark Pink, said: “This was a pre-planned, sophisticated fraud that continued for a prolonged period of time.

"Moore made over £35,000 from his criminality and his activity resulted in significant revenue loss for TfL. “We've worked closely with TfL to bring Moore to justice and the sentence passed down to him today shows that this type of criminality will not be tolerated.”

Richard Mullings, TfL’s head of counter-fraud and corruption, said: “Fare evasion and fraud deprives the capital’s public transport system of millions of pounds of investment money that should have been used to improve the buses, tubes and roads for everyone.

"This latest conviction shows that we take a zero tolerance approach to anyone defrauding Londoners.

"We will not hesitate to prosecute anyone who fraudulently offers for sale Oyster cards to customers who are not eligible for our discounts, and those who purchase them to deliberately avoid paying for their travel.”

40 southwark arts institutions are given a lifeline Many have been left without any income for months

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Theatre Peckham, Menier Chocolate Factory, Brunel Museum and the Old Operating Theatre are among 40 organisations in Southwark to be given ‘lifeline’ grants from the new Culture Recovery Fund, announced last Monday.

More than a thousand bodies have so far been awarded funding from the first round of the £1.57 billion scheme, administered by the Arts Council, to help arts and cultural venues survive the pandemic - with nearly £8 million awarded to those in Southwark.

Many had been left without income for months at a time - and the majority remain unable to function normally due to social distancing restrictions.

Theatre Peckham, which helped launch John Boyega’s career, pivoted during lockdown to become a digital creative hub. During lockdown all but four members of staff were furloughed; returning to work in September.

Suzann McLean, its chief executive and artistic director, said: “Theatre Peckham’s key role is in providing hyper-local cultural opportunity.

“We welcome this grant which enables us to keep our doors open and offer low cost access to the arts to a community hard hit by COVID-19.

“Our young people define Theatre Peckham and this funding ensures we

can fully respond to their needs.”

Menier Chocolate Factory, a restaurant and 180-seat theatre in an old factory in Southwark Street, also made a successful application - receiving one of the largest amounts in the borough.

A non-subsidised venue, the theatre described the £831,830 grant as ‘quite literally, a lifeline’.

The only organisations in the borough to receive more were Ministry of Sound (£975,468) and the Philarmonia Orchestra, based at Chancel Street (£967,413).

Rotherhithe educational charity Brunel Museum said its team were ‘bursting with ideas and energy’ after receiving £180,000 - equivalent to six months of funding.

Speaking about the scheme, culture secretary, Oliver Dowden, said: “This funding is a vital boost for the theatres,

music venues, museums and cultural organisations that form the soul of our nation. It will protect these special places, save jobs and help the culture sector’s recovery.

“These places and projects are cultural beacons the length and breadth of the country. This unprecedented investment in the arts is proof this government is here for culture, with further support to come in the days and weeks ahead so that the culture sector can bounce back strongly.”

Other organisations to benefit include Lewisham-based Sound Services Ltd, awarded £172,755. The company provides sound systems and services for music venues, theatres, festivals and art galleries across London. It had no work for five months and is now turning over around three per cent of revenue compared to this time last year.

POLITICIANS CALL FOR LOCKDOWN AND MORE SUPPORT

The new rules mean mixing between households is banned - including in pubs and other venues - but up to six people can still meet up outside.

The 10pm curfew is still in place, and people can travel to work or to their school or university but are advised to work from home where possible.

In a statement issued last week, councillor Kieron Williams, Southwark Council's leader, said: “This is a critical moment for our borough.

"Despite the efforts of everyone in our community, the infection rate is rising rapidly, and hospital and intensive care admissions in London are rising too.

"We all need to act now to help save lives. The new rule is clear – please only socialise indoors with people you either live with, or who are part of your support bubble.

"And continue to follow the other government guidelines too, including

reducing the number of journeys you make where possible.

"If we all play our part now we can save lives and reduce the chance of a need for a full lock down later in the year, protecting jobs too.

“I know this is not easy. We will continue to offer support to those who are hardest hit through our Community Hub and Southwark Emergency Support Service.

“I am also calling on the government to come forward with more financial support for affected businesses and for people who are struggling to get by.

“I am immensely proud of the people of Southwark and of our local businesses for doing their best to adapt to an ever-changing situation, playing your part by following the new rules as they happen, and trying your best to stop the spread of the virus.

"I urge everyone to continue to do this, with our full support. Only by working together can we protect our families, friends and communities.”

Although supportive of the further restrictions, Labour, the Lib Dems and the Greens are all calling for a ‘circuit breaker’ lockdown to give the government time to fix the ‘failing’ test and trace system, including giving businesses and residents greater

support, and prevent the NHS from becoming overwhelmed in November.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle described Boris Johnson as “increasingly isolated and out of touch” after a new YouGov poll showed 68 per cent of respondents would support a circuit breaker lockdown during half term.

Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes said: “If we follow the science and break the circuit, we can get this virus under control.

“If we do not, we could sleep walk into a long and bleak winter.”

According to data from City Hall, despite improvements over the last three weeks the testing rate in London remains the lowest in the country and is currently less than 80 per cent of the average rate achieved across England.

Last Wednesday Sadiq Khan wrote to the Prime Minister calling for more financial support for struggling industries in London, including an immediate extension to the business rates holiday for retail, leisure and hospitality businesses currently due to end in March 2021. , and further clarification on what help will be available if the capital is moved into higher tiers.

A man was allegedly punched in the face for not wearing a face mask on a London Bridge train.

Cops on Monday released CCTV images in connection with the reported assault on Sunday, October 11 at around 2pm.

They say the victim was approached by a man who punched him in the face for not wearing a face covering as the train was nearing the station.

The pair then had an altercation on the platform once the train arrived before being separated by members of the public.

The British Transport Police said the victim was not injured seriously.

The man pictured in the CCTV may have information which can help the investigation, detectives say.

Southwark's new cases are levelling but not dropping after it saw a total of 255 new positive COVID-cases last week (October 12-18), compared to 254 the week before.

Between early to mid October cases jumped by more than a third within seven days. At the beginning of the month 193 new infections were recorded between September 28 to Sunday, October 4.

As of last week the seven-day rolling average for daily new infections was 38.7 - figures last seen in March and April; albeit back when the test and trace system was not in place.

The government’s own advisers had warned not locking down fully could lead to deaths rising to 200 a day by November; a grim milestone reached on Tuesday when 241 deaths were recorded across the UK amid over 21,000 daily cases nationwide - the highest since June.

The vast majority of those deaths were in England, with eight in London.

within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test.

It does not include anyone who fell unwell in the early days of the pandemic, who died after 28 days, or died without taking a test.

Deaths in Southwark where COVID-19 is mentioned on the death certificate as one cause are seen as providing a more accurate picture of the scale of the pandemic - this figure is 255 for up to mid-October.

The latest available hospital figures show 87 people were admitted to London hospitals on Saturday, October 17 alone, with over 500 people in hospital in the capital on Monday.

For anyone in doubt, the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics have confirmed COVID-19 is not simply ‘like flu’.

More than three times as many people died due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) than influenza and pneumonia, between January and August 2020.

An analysis of deaths in England and Wales shows COVID-19 claimed the lives of 48,168 people, while 13,619 people died of pneumonia and 394 died from influenza.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Planet Nollywood’s dance floor was closed down and its owners taken to court after it was found flouting COVID-19 rules during a council and police raid.

Police and Southwark Council staff busted the venue in Camberwell Road on Friday, September 18, after repeated advice and instructions to improve its health and safety had been ‘ignored’.

In a statement Southwark Council alleges that the ‘majority’ of staff were ‘ignorant of COVID-19 regulations’ and CCTV footage from September 12 and August 8 showed the premises had been illegally operating as a nightclub.

A Prohibition Notice was served to close the ground floor, and sound system equipment seized.

Southwark Council says it is taking further prosecution against the owner under current COVID-19 legislation.

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member public health and community safety, said: “While we are working with many businesses, and helping them to play their part in keeping people safe, it has become clear that a small minority are repeatedly failing themselves, their staff and their customers.

“Despite all of our warnings, Planet Nollywood continued to flout the rules and ignore officer advice.

“We will meet this, and all such irresponsible and dangerous behaviour, with legal action under Covid-19 and other appropriate legislation.

“With rates of infection rising across London, and nationally, is it vital that we all follow the rules and do the right thing.”

The council has spot checked, served warnings and prohibition notices to over 3,400 businesses since the first lockdown, saying the vast majority are compliant.

In these checks, officers make sure that the test and trace system and NHS QR code app are being used, social distancing is being observed, tables are not too close, masks and other PPE are being worn, that the rule of six is being followed and that the 10pm curfew is being respected.

It also offers advice and support for business owners.

The Met has the power to enforce these legal limits, and issue fines of £100, doubling for further breaches, up to a maximum of £3,200.

The News contacted Planet Nollywood for a response but has not yet received a reply.

Under the Late Night Levy, licensed businesses in Southwark which operate after midnight have to pay an extra charge on top of their licensing fee.

This can be between £299 to £4,400 a year, depending on the size and type of the venue. The money goes towards the cost of policing and clean-up.

Southwark Council says it does not have the power to stop collecting the fee, because the power is set out in legislation from central Government.

Since September 24, boozers and restaurants have been forced to close at 10pm under a curfew to stop the spread of Covid.

Among the venues affected is the Prince of Peckham pub on Clayton Road.

“With a curfew forced on bars, pubs and clubs, what happens with those that have paid a late night levy for 2020/21?” it has asked. “Will we be

rebated a portion of [it]?”

Southwark Council’s Cllr Evelyn Akoto said the authority couldn’t waive the fees, but that it was considering deferring licensing payments.

“These fees are set by central Government who has yet to decide to relax the legislation given the mandated 10pm curfew affecting licensed premises in the borough,” she said.

“While we await further government guidance, we are considering all options available to us, including payment deferment so premises may continue trading with a license during this difficult time.”

The issue has affected other local authority areas which have introduced a Late Night Levy, such as Camden.

The news comes as Mayor Sadiq Khan called this week for the curfew to be dropped now that London is in Tier Two restrictions.

“Immediately scrapping the 10pm curfew would allow more sittings of single households in restaurants throughout the evening, helping with cashflow at a time when venues need all the support they can get,” he said.

New walk-through centre opens at Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A new walk-through COVID-19 testing site has opened at Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre car park.

The site is accessible for people who can’t drive but anyone attending is requested not to travel there by taxi or public transport and, if walking or cycling, following social distancing and wearing face masks.

Only people with symptoms - high temperature, new and continuous cough, or a loss or change of taste and smell - can book a test.

Tests can be booked by calling 119 or online at nhs.uk/coronavirus.

The site opened on Saturday, October 17, and appointments will be made available on a daily basis.

There are now 500 sites available across the UK, including 78 drivethrough sites, 193 walk-through sites,

258 mobile units, home testing and satellite kits and five mega-laboratories.

Anyone testing positive for the virus in England will be contacted by NHS Test and Trace to help them trace their contacts - as well as using the Test and Trace app to send out notifications to anyone else who has been in close contact.

Those who may have been exposed to the virus will be asked to stay at home for fourteen days to prevent them from

egrettably in recent weeks we have seen the rate of coronavirus once again rising quickly across the country including in London.

Although initially the increase in coronavirus cases was strongly focused on younger people in the community, it is now clear that cases are increasing rapidly amongst over-65s, leading to rising numbers of patients with coronavirus in hospital, on ventilators and sadly a rising death toll.

We are also seeing more staff in our care homes with coronavirus, many of whom currently show no symptoms and unwittingly risk passing this deadly disease onto the care home residents that they look after.

The test, trace and isolate system should have been a vital tool for preventing coronavirus spread and avoiding a disastrous second wave, but the government’s privatised system, outsourced to contractors like Serco and Sitel has been a complete disaster.

In recent weeks local residents have been told to travel as far as Scotland and the Isle of Wight for a coronavirus test and we know that the number of tests was deliberately restricted in London, just at the time that we needed the testing capacity most.

Speak to any parent or carer of young children and they will tell you that approximately three weeks after the schools start back in September is a peak time for children to suffer from colds which often include the symptoms of

cough and mild fever. But no one in the privatised track, trace and test system seemed to have anticipated that a predictable rapid increase in the number of people with symptoms which the government requires to be tested would lead to a sharp increase in the demand for tests. This despite the advice of private consultants being paid up to £7,000 a day.

The government had months to prepare for the start of term, but they failed to plan and their incompetence is now contributing the rising infection level in London and across the country.

Now that London and many other parts of the country are facing more restrictions it is essential that the government provides the support needed to individual workers and businesses that are impacted most, as well as providing additional funding to our councils.

I want to see the furlough scheme continue beyond the end of this month, with at least 80 per cent of wages paid for workers impacted, support for crucial sectors of our economy such as the arts, leisure and hospitality, proper sick pay from day one for all workers showing symptoms or forced to take time off work because someone in their household shows symptoms and clear advice and support for everyone who is deemed clinically vulnerable to coronavirus who was previously required to shield.

Although the Tories have been too slow to act throughout this crisis, and have shown a callous disregard for the terrible suffering of those who have fallen through the cracks in their response, it is not too late for Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak to change their minds and provide the help and support that our communities and economy need.

ike everyone, I had hoped we wouldn’t get to a point where COVID-19 restrictions would need to be tightened in London, but it became absolutely necessary because infection rates have been rising rapidly.

Now that the whole city has moved into ‘Level 2’ restrictions we must all follow extra rules to help stop the spread of the virus.

I know, like me, you will want to play your part in protecting your family, friends and communities, and ultimately, save lives. This deadly virus has had a devastating impact in our community already, tragically claiming the lives of 255 Southwark residents. The best way we can protect ourselves and each other is to follow the rules and advice.

I have written a letter, explaining the additional rules, that has been sent to every household in the borough.

The key new rule that affects us all is clear – please only socialise indoors with people you either live with, or who are part of your support bubble.

I know not seeing our family, friends and colleagues as often as we would like is going to be very difficult, especially for those who rely most on their support.

But it is so important we act now, before the rates spiral out of control, and many more lives are needlessly lost.

In Southwark we are acting fast. We are one of four London boroughs that now

have local track and trace systems up and running. It’s been deeply frustrating to see the shortcomings and increasing ineffectiveness of the national system – its own target of reaching 80 per cent of contacts of those with a positive test, is regularly being missed. Our brilliant team in Southwark is now playing a key role in tracing contacts of people locally who test positive. This vital work is filling gaps left by the inadequate national system.

We are also calling on government for additional support. The financial impact of COVID-19 has had a crippling impact on many people in Southwark, and I know many businesses are struggling to keep their head above water. That is why I’m asking for better financial support for people who are self-isolating and for hard hit workers and businesses too.

Whilst some financial support has come through to the council from Government, it has been, to date, wholly and sadly inadequate. We are facing a £16.3m shortfall this year and a £26m shortfall next year. Without extra funding from government we risk not being able to deliver the vital services the government has mandated are necessary in response to the pandemic, including supporting contract tracing, securing our care homes, tackling homelessness and supporting those facing unemployment.

We are calling on Government to urgently talk with us and other councils about the challenges we face and to come

forward with additional financial support so we can support our vulnerable residents and our local economy.

I am so proud of how volunteers, frontline workers, public services, charities, faith groups and businesses across Southwark have stepped up to try and stop the spread of the virus so far. I know so many people in Southwark have already sacrificed so much for the sake of their own health and that of others during the pandemic and I’ve heard so many awe inspiring stories of frontline workers in Southwark. I’m so grateful for the fearless work they do daily, despite huge physical and mental demands.

READERS’ VIEWS Letter to the editor Regarding the controversy over Burgess Park: I have made it clear that I do not support sex in public. My tweets were about the poor way Southwark Council has handled the issue, not a defence of public sex. People have a right to use the park without being confronted by sexual acts.

Southwark’s injunction imposes a draconian two year jail sentence, which exceeds the normal criminal penalties. The council also acted against Metropolitan Police guidance. It did not consult with the local LGBT+ community and seek our help to solve the problem. If we had been consulted, we would have worked with the council, alerted the local LGBT+ community that there have been complaints and urged gay men to not have sex in public places. This partnership strategy has worked very well elsewhere in London to resolve similar problems.

I should add that it is not just gay men having sex in Burgess Park. It is also heterosexual couples. Neither is acceptable.

Regeneration isn’t the issue here. The issue is local stakeholders not being properly included in the consultation process. The issue is local businesses being forced out without being adequately compensated or relocated. Private investors doing whatever they please.

Dilapidated buildings will always need attention but councils and authorities need to do better in making sure that these things are sustainable.

I know how dangerous this can be. A few years ago I was sitting outside the Wetherspoons pub when some youngsters threw a firework into the middle of the road. It suddenly flew across the road straight at me. I managed to dodge it but it singed the jacket I was wearing. Fireworks are not toys and can do great personal harm if not supervised by an adult.

Weeks after a reader contacted us to point out a new bus stop in Bermondsey had been misnamed ‘Drummod Road’, a similar howler has been made.

Changes have been made to the area around The Cut, and to mark the occasion officials put up a sign reading: “No through road to Blackfriers Road via The Cut.” The authority’s HQ is in the Palestra House - in what is correctly called Blackfriars Road. The sign has apparently since been replaced.

But far less disruptive than a bridge blockade, some members of the group have taken to leafleting Southwark Council.

Activists involved in the group stuck posters on the town hall windows urging it to “Act Now” on climate change and the environment earlier this month.

The paper posters were swiftly removed. We hope no trees were harmed in the making of that message.

Officials at TfL seem unlikely to win a spelling bee any time soon.

After a period of relative quiet, some Extinction Rebellion activists are taking up protest again in the borough.

The cladding scandal to go on for decades

S

eventy-two people died in the fire at Grenfell tower, despite years of warnings over fire safety. What an insult to their memory that more than three years on the cladding scandal is far from over.

Instead, hundreds of thousands of people are trapped in substandard buildings, unable to sell or leave, and stuck paying mortgages for properties that are - until remedial works are completed - effectively worthless.

Subsequent inquiries and scrutiny in parliament has made clear that many of these issues are the product of a deregulated planning system with limited oversight, and developers willing to choose cutting costs over focusing on long-term quality.

Although the government has put over a billion into a fund to remove cladding, many leaseholders and building owners are still wrangling over who pays.

On Tuesday, the building safety minister said leaseholders would have to shoulder some costs contrary to statements from then Prime Minister Theresa May and her ministers - despite these being historic flaws for which they are in no way responsible.

PM Boris Johnson’s answer to Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes’ interrogation in parliament was characteristically light. Yes, we do need to ‘get on’ with removing cladding.

But Hayes says at the current rate it would take ten years for all buildings waiting for a new EWS1 certificate - saying all dangerous cladding and insulation has been removed - to be given to all affected properties.

But what about those still in limbo where work hasn’t even started yet? One new analysis says it could take 150 years to replace all dangerous cladding in high rise blocks unless urgent action is taken. Covid-19 has surely slowed things further.

The current focus is also only on blocks over 18 metres high. Are there many more buildings with problems we simply don’t know about?

Amid COVID-19 and Brexit, campaigners from the End Our Cladding Scandal group have been doing sterling work highlighting those let down by builders, developers, and now their own government - and what it means for homeowners everywhere.

South bank uni students to give free legal advice to windrush victims and help with compensation claims

josh@southwarknews.co.uk London South Bank university students will offer free legal advice to Windrush victims under an initiative formally launched on Tuesday.

The new Windrush Justice Clinic brings together students at the universities of Westminster, Greenwich, and South Bank to help victims navigate a government compensation scheme.

The compensation scheme was established in April last year, after the government apologised for the suffering it had inflicted on Windrush victims.

To date, more than twelve thousand people have received confirmation from the Home Office that they are living legally in the UK. This is an indication, campaigners say, of the number of people who may be able to get compensation from the scheme which ends in 2023.

But by the end of September 2020, only 168 people had received payouts totalling £1.3m. Estimates had suggested the scheme could be forced to pay out up to £200m.

“It is separate from our labour ward so parents can grieve in private without having to see families with new babies.

“It was very important to us that the room provides as much comfort, peace and support as possible.

“Bereaved families were involved in the refurbishment and helped to influence the design.

“As a result, the room feels more homely than clinical and there is sufficient space for partners to spend the night so families can be together.

“The room also contains bereavement items such as a memory box for parents to make special keepsakes and spend precious time with their babies.

“The feedback from families has been

very positive.

“The room has provided them with comfort during a very difficult time.”

Guy’s and St Thomas’ has been the first NHS trust in London to work with the charity Cradle to provide parents dealing with early pregnancy loss with peer support, comfort bags, and outpatient support packs.

Bereaved parents are also offered a ‘cold cot’, donated by the baby loss and stillbirth charities Abigail’s Footsteps, SiMBA, 4Louis and the manufacturer of Cuddle Cots, so they can stay with their babies for longer and say goodbye in their own time.

The trust has also partnered with the charity Remember My Baby to provide free professional photography to families suffering the loss of a baby.

Zahra added: “Losing a baby during pregnancy or birth is a huge tragedy.

“Our bereavement team and specialist services are there to support parents going through an extremely difficult time.

“We are very proud to support Baby Loss Awareness Week and are thankful to all of the charities who have provided us with bereavement items to help families make special memories with their babies.

“It’s really important that we raise awareness of these issues to provide even better care and to ensure families don’t suffer alone.”

King’s College Hospital also joined the international ‘wave of light’ movement; lighting candles in memory of babies who died during pregnancy or in early infancy.

Two midwives from King’s were given top awards for providing outstanding care and improvements for women and their babies.

Jill Demilew and Mary Dehinbo were presented with gold and silver awards by the country’s most senior midwife - chief midwifery officer Professor Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent, OBE. Consultant Midwife Jill, who received the gold award, was recognised for addressing health inequalities and improving access to healthcare for the most vulnerable women in south London.

Jill’s work has had a direct impact on changing health policy and improving care. She has been a key figure in putting in place what is called ‘continuity of care’ - which means women have the same group of midwives supporting them throughout their pregnancy, labour and after.

This model, established at King’s College Hospital, has been used as an example followed by other trusts.

Tracey MacCormack, head of midwifery at King’s College Hospital, said: “Jill’s extraordinary contribution has given a voice to the most marginalised groups of women in society.

“She has influenced so many midwives and student midwives who have worked alongside her.

“Jill’s contribution has changed national guidance for the benefit of women and their families.

“She is an unassuming leader, extremely gracious, an expert in her subject, an excellent role model and an absolute asset to maternity services for vulnerable women in south London.”

Mary Dehinbo, newly appointed consultant midwife, was presented with the silver award for making positive changes to the labour ward whilst on secondment.

She was instrumental in setting up a telephone assessment line, which improved the triage process for women in labour calling the department. This also freed up time for midwives to provide care on the ward.

Mary has also implemented wireless foetal monitoring, which has improved the standard of care for women.

Tracey MacCormack added: “During Mary’s secondment to a specialist role covering a consultant midwife’s post, she made many positive changes on the labour ward, whilst providing support not only for the women in her care but also others on the ward.”

Professor Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent, who presented the awards, said, “The Chief Midwifery Officer Awards celebrate the ways that staff have gone above and beyond to improve care for women and their babies, as well as their contribution to the profession of midwifery as a whole.

“I was extremely proud to hear about the amazing work that has taken place and honoured to have the opportunity to present these awards.”

The labyrinth of life

In pursuit of progress, humankind etched its wounding narrative upon the once abundant planet we inhabit. Luckily, Terra Nexus art exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to edit the current harrowing tale of woe that lies ahead, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor.

All that is required is: a willingness to embrace different perspectives, to overturn entrenched scripts that privilege human will, and, above all else, be responsible for levelling up the perilously out of balance scales.

Encouraging visitors to consider collaborative approaches are the exhibition’s 25 artists, inviting us to navigate our way through a labyrinth of 17 art installations, dutifully geared towards opening our eyes to the beating heart of life around us, that many of use do not see.

Suddenly, that gorgeous jar of honey becomes more than a commodity on a supermarket shelf, while concrete takes on a beauty all of its own. Being literally enveloped in the exhibition’s womb-like corridors of creativity took us back to when cultural practises worked harmoniously with the ecosystem. Supporting us to learn from those ancestral practises is Lao artist and alchemist Finchittida Finch’s observations that, whether human,

ecological or astrophysical, we are all connected through life and death cycles. A relationship beautifully

demonstrated in her installation of fruit intricately carved in honour of dear freind, which acknowledges

ancient cultural practices that unite the life of that which is eaten with those that we love.

The blasé may relegate a dormant volcano to a photo opportunity but, to remind us of the error of our ways is Neapolitan sculptor and painter Cristiano Di Martino with his hauntingly stark, bleached installation celebrating 18th century sculptural methods. Suddenly that slumbering heap of rock reclaims its magnificent potential to blow all in its path to merry hell, swallowing, incinerating and spewing out life ad infinitum.

Humbled, yes. Terra Nexus shows that we are merely small fry, but that we are a part of the jigsaw, and these installations remind us of our coexistence with this planet and all life within it.

Wonderfully curated by artist Gabriella Sonabend, supported by Daniel Hudson, this labyrinthine exhibition is provocative.

Muholi exhibition challenges stereotypes & celebrates empowered non-binary people Zanele Muholi is one of the most acclaimed photographers working today, and their work has been exhibited all over the world.

With over 260 photographs, this exhibition presents the full breadth of their career to date.

Muholi describes themself as a visual activist. From the early 2000s, they have documented and celebrated the lives of South Africa’s black lesbian, gay, trans, queer and intersex communities.

In the early series Only Half the Picture, Muholi captures moments of love and intimacy as well as intense images alluding to traumatic events – despite the equality promised by South Africa’s 1996 constitution, its LGBTQIA+ community remains a target for violence and prejudice.

In Faces and Phases each participant looks directly at the camera, challenging the viewer to hold their gaze. These images and the accompanying testimonies form a growing archive of a community of people who are risking their lives by living authentically in the face of oppression and discrimination.

Other key series of works, include

Brave Beauties, which celebrates empowered non-binary people and trans women, many of whom have won Miss Gay Beauty pageants, and Being, a series of tender images of couples which challenge stereotypes and taboos.

Muholi turns the camera on themself in the ongoing series Somnyama Ngonyama – translated as ‘Hail the Dark Lioness’. These powerful and reflective images explore themes

including labour, racism, Eurocentrism and sexual politics.

Exhibition organised by Tate Modern in collaboration with the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris, Gropius Bau, Berlin and Bildmuseet at Umeå University.

We are here For Black History Month there is We Are Here, an exhibition of highlights from Black Women’s history in the Feminist Library’s collections that covers many campaigns, groups, and organisations.

This rich collection of materials includes posters, badges, flyers, archives, periodicals spanning some five decades of the feminist movement’s history.

Many of the items give an insight into campaigns, groups, and organisations in London during the 1980s and 1990s; ranging from solidarity events

and political organising to social and cultural events.

We Are Here was curated by Nana Opoku, producer and multimedia artist, and Minna Haukka, Kone Foundation funded artist and Coordinator of the Feminist Library Curatorial team, and Vanessa Giorgo, independent curator.

Nana Opoku said: “Feminism is diverse and for black and brown women a terrain of complicated alliance. This exhibition seeks to celebrate and highlight the work Black Women have contributed towards the movement.

Many of the materials we’ve assembled were created pre-digital age even before

the term Intersectional Feminism was even coined. And still, the messages are as potent and applicable to the current times. I’m excited to see how the visitors engage and respond with the content within our new space.”

Lola Olufemi, author of Feminism Interrupted; Disrupting Power will be in discussion with Stella Dadzie, an educationalist, historian and cofounder of OWAAD. Dadzie is set to release her highly anticipated new book A Kick in the Belly: Women, Slavery and Resistance.

The exhibition will be adhering to current social distancing guidelines.

A series of Young & Gifted Chats bring together Black artists, academics, educators and entrepreneurs to examine pressing themes for Black Londoners and their allies. The first panel chat centres around the Black British Business Boom during Covid-19 and is followed by Decolonising

Education, chaired by writer, filmmaker, former teacher and Peckham native Caleb Femi. These will be in-person panel events and also live-streamed.

Coinciding with Black History Month, Theatre Peckham announces the launch of a new branch of work – delivering anti-racism coaching and training in the form of bespoke workshops for organisations in the cultural, public and private sector.

A taster event titled Five Pillars: Understanding Racism with Si mone Watson will take place during the Young, Gifted & Black season.

Exhibition highlights include the powerful and informative archival artwork Black British Figures which

features Black Britons and their stories throughout the ages, by influential illustrator, editor and writer Varaidzo. This will be the first time these images have been on display outside of the digital realm.

Commenting on the new season’s work, Artistic Director Suzann McLean said: “During the pandemic many theatres have been forced to close entirely but Theatre Peckham, despite seemingly insurmountable challenges, has been one of the few organisations to continue delivery.

Peckham’s series of Young, gifted and black events Following six months of closure, Theatre Peckham, South London’s flagship cultural venue and pioneering learning theatre, celebrates its reopening with a multi-artform programme of socially distanced, in-person and participatory digital events, taking place throughout October and into November.

History

The Kaiser’s silent raid on Camberwell

one hundred and three years ago, on October 19, 1917, a 47-stone bomb hurtled from the night sky towards a corner of Camberwell, demolishing several family homes and businesses and killing ten people.

Earlier that fateful night, six German airships, known as the Kaiser’s infamous Zeppelin raiders, were blown wildly off course from their industrial Sheffield target – with one swept south over Piccadilly Circus, towards Camberwell.

A bomb was offloaded on the corner of Calmington Road and Albany Road – near where Burgess Park is today – demolishing several four-storey houses, including a doctor’s surgery and a fish shop, and severely damagingmany homes.

Ten innocent peoplewere killed, 24 injured, and the lives of many others changed forever in what was later dubbed the ‘Silent Raid’.

Speaking to the News, on the centenury in 2017 Friends of Burgess Park member Jon Pickup described the story of the BoyceBalls family who were caught up in the terror of that night.

“Among the victims, Henry BoyceBalls and his secondwife Nellie Darville lived over their grocers shop, across the road,” he said.

“They‘d crossed to the surgery to comfort the doctor’s nervous wife

– for an air raid warning had been sounded much earlier that evening.

“Their five young kids lay in a row, sheltering in the cellar.

“Reginald – known as Sonny – aged five, and Edwin – known as Eddie – aged three both lost their lives that night.

“Leslie, aged just four, crawled back into the cellar, unwilling to leave his trapped dad’s side.

“Baby Greta, just eleven months old, was pulled from the rubble, as police rushed to try and rescue victims from the devastation.

“Miraculously Henry and Leslie escaped, and Greta survives to this day, now a spritely 100 years old.”

Greta went on to serve and bugle with the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) in WWII and to witness first-hand the liberation of Europe.

Three years ago on the 100th anniversary of that night and to commemorate the occasion, and remember the lives of those affected, the Friends of Burgess Park put together the Zeppelin 2017 project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that on 22 October 2020 it has made the above experimental Orders under sections 9 and 10 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

sport@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL LIONESSES boss Katie Whitmore was impressed with her side’s display in the 1-1 draw at home to East Bergholt in the ERWFL Division One South last Sunday – with the manager even having to pull her boots back on to make up the numbers on the bench.

The Lionesses had been on a losing streak and were keen to end that run back on home turf at St Paul’s against their visitors.

They took a first-half lead through Kira Wealls, who finished well from Millie Connell’s superb free-kick delivery in the 21st minute, having missed earlier chances to take the lead.

Millwall couldn’t extend their lead through their early second-half opportunities, with Whitmore forcing a

good save from the goalkeeper and Kelly Webster firing narrowly over, before the visitors equalised against the run of play.

Millie Carter made a good initial save but the defence were second to react allowing an easy tap-in at the far post in the 64th minute The Lionesses struggled to create chances after that with only one halfchance through Abbey Dell, but the opposition goalkeeper was out quickly to challenge.

Whitmore said: “Yeah, definitely positives. We were on that losing run, we’d lost three weeks in a row, so the aim was to make sure that we didn’t lose again.

“We had to stay focused and make sure that we got a result. We were missing lots of players but I’m so proud of the players that were out on that pitch because they put the work in and got the result they deserved.

DULWICH HAMLET WOMEN had a record 582 crowd backing them at Champion Hill last Sunday – but exited the FA Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Leyton Orient.

Orient went ahead in the seventh minute. Katherine Long shot between two Hamlet defenders to catch goalkeeper Klaudia Kovacs off guard.

Orient then dug in, stopping Dulwich’s supply line from midfield.

McElvaine had another effort from distance, but Ogunde again kept it out.

Despite the result, it was an uplifting afternoon in East Dulwich as the club demonstrated they could put on an event in front of a large number of fans.

The side’s next game is at Ashford Town this Sunday, before a return to Champion Hill against Dartford seven days later.

Whitmore is strong on developing the players.

She said: “Definitely [performances are more important than results at the moment]. Previously, I’ve said it’s very much about focusing on the players and developing them within the squad.

disappointing, but we’ve got twelve new players all merged together in a squad of 25, so success for me will be making sure we progress and develop together.”

Whitmore added: “Every game to me is a tough game. Every game they have to go in as if they’ve never played it before. That’s massive. As long as we go in with the right mentality and we focus psychologically, then we should be all right.

“I’m expecting some [players] to be back. I say it every week but I don’t like complacency, so sometimes it’s good to have to mix it up a bit so that the girls understand that they can’t just turn up to training and matches or that because they play week-in, week-out that means they’re safe in the squad. That’s a big thing for me.”

Rye hit back to take points

PECKHAM RYE took all three points after a 2-1 win against Junior Reds Seniors in their first home game of the 2020-21 season last weekend.

Rye’s only change from their defeat to the SE Dons the previous weekend was Manny Ade starting on the right and Ryan Brown dropping to the bench.

It was an electric start to the game with the Reds’ goalkeeper making two vital saves in the first ten mins to keep the score at 0-0.

But just as Peckham were knocking on the door, Reds counter-attacked and Josh Flower gave away a penalty allowing the visitors to take the lead.

Peckham, however, immediately hit back with Ade justifying his inclusion by cutting in from the right and firing a left-

O’Flaherty, 26, started playing rugby at Old Alleynians, before going on to represent Dulwich and Blackheath.

The speedster moved to Wales where he played for Cardiff RFC and Brigend, before a hop across the channel and a season with Top 14 side Montpellier.

Lambeth-born O’Flaherty moved back to Wales to join Ospreys and he made his debut against Harlequins in the Anglo-Welsh Cup. He signed for Exeter ahead of the 2017-18 Premiership season.

The Chiefs led 21-12 at half-time before weathering a late storm from their French opponents to clinch the title.

O’Flaherty spoke to the Talking Rugby Union website earlier this year reflecting on his career.

“As an 18/19-year-old, I think the step from boy’s rugby to men’s rugby is more of a physical thing than anything else,” O’Flaherty said. “If you get used to that early on, I think it is a really good learning curve and also having to deal with a different environment, which the boys who are out on loan will know, can be beneficial.

“One minute you’re in the Chiefs’ professional environment and the next you’re in a semi-professional environment. I think it helps make you a more rounded person.

“That feeling amongst the [Exeter] team is one of the great things about the club. There isn’t really any hierarchies. Everyone just mucks in together. When I first arrived, one of the things which I noticed straight away was that everyone just has a good bond.

“The nice thing about the environment is that the club let you enjoy yourselves. The club let you express yourself which helps you bond with team-mates, which I think is massively important.

“If you can enjoy yourself and you are playing with people who are genuinely your mates, then it is obviously going to translate on to the pitch.”

“It is, of course, a very good environment to learn in when you are working with top coaches and world class players day in, day out.”

The Hamlet weren’t able to recover after Chippenham striker, Chris Zebroski, scored in the 33rd minute, and the visitors deserved their victory.

The home side started the game the brighter of the two teams with their wingers – Tyrique Hyde and Diogo Barbosa - causing Chippenham trouble with their pace in behind.

After fifteen minutes, the ball fell to Korrey Henry in the Chippenham box, but the Dulwich striker blazed over the bar.

Minutes later, Hyde burst down the right flank and whipped a cross towards the far post. Lewis White met the ball with an acrobatic volley but he couldn’t keep his strike down.

After a breathless half-an-hour, Zebroski, who had come on as a substitute seconds earlier, wasted little time making an impact as he scored Chippenham’s opening goal with a bullet header.

The Hamlet struggled to recover from the setback and the remainder of the opening period descended into a mire of poor challenges.

At half-time, Hamlet manager Gavin Rose would have asked his side to get back to their early pressure.

But the wind was taken from their sails after only seven minutes of the second period as Chippenham midfielder, Ross Stearn, curled a freekick into the box that Bradley Ash headed home.

The following 20 minutes were more or less constant Chippenham pressure, driven by Stearn’s consistently dangerous free-kicks, which seemed destined for the head of Chippenham centre-back Kieran

Parselle even before they were struck.

Parselle could not convert any of his chances, though.

In the final minutes, Dulwich applied some late pressure with a succession of corners, but Chippenham came closest to adding to their lead, with substitute Kieran Philips nearly rubbing salt into the wounds in the dying seconds.

This was their first competitive home game in seven months so Dulwich could be excused for taking some time to acclimatise, especially in a stadium usually throbbing but still deprived of fans.

But they will need to improve if they are to have a successful league season.

Meanwhile, it’s back into FA Cup action this Saturday. Dulwich are away at National League South rivals Eastbourne Borough in the fourth qualifying round with the winners pocketing £9,375 and earning a place in the first round proper.

Five-star Stans coast home

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk AFTER THEIR FA Vase heroics the previous weekend, Stansfeld secured a much-needed win, their first of the campaign, thanks to an impressive 5-0 home victory over Meridian VP.

Stansfeld started as they meant to and did go on. The pressure paid off when Macey Malyon got Stansfeld’s first goal in the seventh minute before Billy Parkinson headed home from close range from a Joe Minter set-piece just four minutes later.

Although the hosts continued to dominate, they could not add to their two-goal lead in the first half.

The second period continued in much the same vein and Stansfeld put the game to bed with three goals in five minutes.

Once again Parkinson headed home a Minter free-kick. Two minutes later Minter got on the scoresheet himself

with the fourth goal, converting from the penalty spot.

Minter then added a fifth direct from a free-kick to give Stansfeld the win and a slight advance up the table to fourteenth place.

Meanwhile, Stansfeld Reserves went down to a disappointing 3-2 defeat at home to Borden Village despite leading 2-0 at half-time with a Billy Shinners brace.

Wallace was one of three players who started for the first time in the league this season at Wycombe Wanderers Matt Smith and Connor Mahoney were the others, and the former set up both goals in the 2-1 win.

Wallace, 27, was first-choice for the majority of last season, but Scott Malone was signed in the summer and had started the first four Championship games of the campaign.

But rather than sulk, Wallace – who has a reputation for a huge work ethic at the training ground – continues to knuckle down.

“It’s frustrating not to be starting every league game or every game that we play, especially with my nature and the nature of the whole team, we’re all very competitive,” Wallace said.

“You work so hard all week to be in that starting XI. Obviously when you find out you’re not there’s disappointment to begin with but we all use that to spur us on, to train every harder, and to prove the manager wrong in a sense and get ourselves back in the side.

“It’s all about the squad that we’ve got, it’s so tight-knit and competitive.

We haven’t just brought in loads of bodies through the door, we’ve brought in the right players who’ll fit in our system and dressing room.

“Each individual has to look after themselves and be ready because there are so many games coming thick and fast. You have to be ready to take your chance.”

He explained: “It’s not uncommon for players in the same position fighting for the same spot to

become quite close and quite good friends. It’s healthy for any squad to have positions that are fiercely

“Because you both play in the same position you talk about patterns of play, opponents, because you’re both looking at that.

“Also, someone playing in your position will be you best critic, the best person to go to for advice. They’ll tell you honestly.”

Wallace has played mostly as a leftback and left wing-back for Millwall, despite arriving in the summer of 2018 as predominantly a centre-back.

Wallace added: “It sounds strange to be saying it now that I haven’t played for so long at centre-back. I played it in pre-season and in the cup games a little bit more in those centre-back roles, which was nice.

“But from last season, playing that left-back and left wing-back role gives me a lot of versatility. Hopefully it adds to the strength of the squad.

We have players that can play in several positions.”

Wallace should be able to look forward to more starts over the coming weeks with Millwall having two games a week – apart from the international break next month – all the way until the end of the year.

Wallace has confidence in the club staff to keep the players fit and healthy. Boss Gary Rowett also varies the daily times the squad have to report to the training ground, in contrast to Neil Harris who had players in early in the morning for the majority of his time in charge.

“You’ve got to trust in the staff and their programmes that they’ve set out for you,” Wallace said. “Everything from the chef, the nutritionists, the stretching, everything adds up.

“Even the schedule, coming in slightly later in the day just so you can have more rest. All that sort of stuff adds up to making a big difference.

“The manager came in with different ideas and styles. You have to give him credit for implementing them and applying them in training, getting all the players comfortable switching from one style to another and to his ideas and philosophies.”

Goals from Jed Wallace and Ryan Leonard overturned a half-time deficit after Bart Bialkowski’s early mistake gifted Scott Kashket the hosts’ first-ever goal in the Championship.

There were nine minutes of addedtime, following repairs to the net after a back-pedalling Ryan Allsop crashed into it trying to save Jake Cooper’s audacious free-kick effort from halfway. Cooper had spotted the goalkeeper off his line and it

lucky that Joe Jacobson’s secondhalf corner that went directly in, just minutes after Wallace’s equaliser from the penalty spot, was disallowed for a soft foul on Bialkowski.

Then again, Tom Bradshaw was unlucky not to win a penalty when

he went down under a challenge from Anthony Stewart, which could have seen the Lions level midway through the first period.

Nonetheless, the three points were well-earned against Gareth Ainsworth’s plucky, newly-promoted side, with a switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation paying dividends for the visitors.

Bradshaw playing just behind Matt Smith allowed Millwall’s counterattacks to quickly transition into a 4-4-2, with the former running off the latter to play off his knock-downs when the Lions went long.

Before the break, Anthony Stewart and Josh Knight stood strong at the back for the Chairboys, but Smith’s experience and presence prevailed in the second half - aided by a manof-the-match display from Wallace.

Three minutes into the second half, Wallace surged down the right to cross to the back post. Jack Grimmer bundled over Smith, and Wallace scored his third goal of the season.

Wallace was allowed a free role, which gave Mahlon Romeo licence to drive forward down the right. Smith

looped a header onto the crossbar from one Romeo cross. That trio combined again to set up Millwall’s winner. Wallace found Romeo storming forward, the full-back clipped in a cross and Smith teed up Leonard for a brilliant half-volleyed finish that gave Allsop no chance.

Wallace was a constant threat to Wycombe’s defence but others certainly stepped up. Smith, Murray Wallace and Connor Mahoney started for the first time in the league this campaign, and their performances will have instilled confidence in this group as they embark on a run of six games in nineteen days, when everyone will be needed.

sport@southwarknews.co.uk THIS RESULT won't grab the headlines like the City Ground massacre back in early March, but this was Millwall's most wellrounded performance of 2020.

That Friday evening, the Lions destroyed one of the form sides in the division in front of almost 28,000 Forest fans who were gunning for automatic promotion themselves. A 2-0 behindclosed-doors victory over Luton Town doesn't have the same ring to it, but it was every bit as good.

Millwall had fallen behind in their previous two league games but that never appeared likely against a Hatters side that didn't register their only attempt on target until the 83rd minute.

In contrast, the hosts managed six, which is two more than their previous two Championship home matches combined against both Stoke City and Brentford. However, it wasn't all plain

sailing for Millwall, who were required to show their patient side.

Missed chances were the theme in the opening 45 minutes – Ryan Leonard and Matt Smith, who both played crucial roles at Wycombe last Saturday, the guilty parties. First, Leonard was unable to direct his effort on target after Jed Wallace and the brilliant Mason Bennett had created a golden opening – with the Lions midfielder scuffing wide.

But that was nothing compared to Smith's. Connor Mahoney produced several outstanding deliveries throughout the game, but none better than this. It was Smith's bread and butter – a free header from six yards out with the goal gaping, but the former QPR frontman somehow managed to crash his effort into the post, much to the shock of those few inside The Den. Simon Sluga reacted well to Jed Wallace's follow-up, but Millwall really should have made that count.

The half appeared to be petering out, which would have suited Luton

far more after their lacklustre opening 45 minutes in which Bart Bialkowski was required to do little besides continuously bellow at his team-mates to remain organised and calm.

Calm is exactly how they remained and they got their reward deep into stoppage-time at the end of a succession of five corners. The final set-piece was met by the head of Smith, and he gobbled this one up, wheeling away after what he thought was his first Championship goal of the campaign.

However, replays clearly showed that Smith's effort, which wasn't going on target, deflected in off Luton's Martin Cranie and it was given as an own goal.

But that wasn't relevant. Millwall had scored one of the couple of goals their first-half performance had warranted.

If you thought that the half-time whistle was going to give the Hatters some breathing space, you'd have been mistaken. A third excellent opportunity was created less than 30 seconds after the restart, and from Gary Rowett's

point of view, it fell to the man that everyone connected to Millwall would have wanted it to – Wallace. But the flying winger lacked composure, fluffing his big moment after Bennett had teed him up from just inside the penalty area.

That miss seemed to spark Luton into life and Nathan Jones' side took control of proceedings, although in truth, Bialkowski's goal never looked like coming under threat. Rowett responded by sending on Scott Malone to replace Smith as the Lions boss opted to switch back his familiar 3-4-3.

And it was the man playing slightly ahead of Malone who settled the contest just when Millwall might have been getting slightly tetchy that the second goal hadn't yet arrived. Mahoney's spell in SE16 has been frustrating, but this was a timely reminder of what the former Bournemouth and Blackburn Rovers man is capable of. Millwall manager reveals timeline of striker pursuit EXCLUSIVE

it was about waiting to see which one dropped first for us.

“We started getting a little bit of encouragement Thursday evening. The main bit for me was I spoke to Kenneth Friday morning just to see whether he was completely keen on coming to Millwall, which is always really important for us.

“When he heard how we plan to play him and how we think we can help him get himself going again then he was really keen to come.

“He’s mainly a central striker, he’s played there all his career, he’s a no. 9.

I’m sure he’s got the flexibility to play across a front three, but predominantly he will play centrally in whatever system we use.”

Zohore will rival Matt Smith and Tom Bradshaw for the central striker role.

Smith set up both of Millwall’s goals against Wycombe last Saturday a day after Zohore joined.

Rowett said the signing of Zohore didn’t act as extra motivation for Smith, because he has been doing the business for Millwall anyway when he has played.

Rowett said: “Ultimately, Matt’s played pretty well every time we’ve called upon him and when he’s got the shirt.

“He’s affected games and at what he does he’s one of the best around. I don’t think that performance [against Wycombe] was purely because we’d signed another player. Matt’s an experienced player and I think he’d do that anyway.”

It was arguably one of the best displays of his reign as his side dominated.

“I thought it was an excellent performance. When you've played as well as we did in the second half on Saturday, you've got to back it up,” Rowett said.

“Good teams do that, they put back-toback performances together and that's what I asked the players to do.

“We're six games in - we went to fourth but could have gone to fourteenth if we'd lost.

“It's about us building, we've been defensively excellent for the twelve months, now it's about translating that good play into more attacking moments in games.”

With Billy Mitchell and Troy Parrott not far from returns, it's impossible not to be excited. But taking one game at a time has never been more appropriate, especially when Millwall's bogey team Barnsley are next to visit The Den on Saturday.

Rowett said Millwall waited three or four days to see which centre-forward from a shortlist would become available last week.

An unrevealed club had agreed a deal with West Brom for Zohore, but decided to go for a different target.

It meant that it was not until Thursday evening – just hours before Friday’s 5pm cut-off for agreeing terms with the club and player as well as processing all the relevant paperwork – that Rowett knew that a deal for Zohore was a real possibility.

Rowett then spoke to Zohore on Friday morning.

“For three or four days we knew there were two or three really good quality strikers that would probably move this window on loan. Ken was one of those,” Rowett explained.

“If I’m being honest I didn’t think we’d get him. I knew there was another club in for him that had supposedly agreed a deal.

“It was quite interesting because at some point agents were saying that club were in for all of [the strikers]. We knew they weren’t going to get all of them so

MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett says the club will wait until January to start discussing potential new deals for players – and hasn’t ruled out Kenneth Zohore being with the Lions for the full season.

Zohore joined on deadline day from West Brom until January 16 and Rowett hopes if he hits the ground running and enjoys his time at the club he will want to extend the deal.

The Lions have a number of players out of contract at the end of this season, including the likes of skipper Alex Pearce, Shaun Williams, Ryan Leonard and Murray Wallace, though some contracts contain activation clauses.

Alternatively, Millwall could agree new long-term contracts, as they did with Shaun Hutchinson and Mahlon Romeo this year and Jake Cooper last summer despite their previous deals having some way to run.

Rowett feels it’s too early in the season to focus on the contract situations.

“Last season we had hardly anyone out of contract,” Rowett said. “We had a couple in Fergie [Shane Ferguson] and Aiden [O’Brien]. This season we’ve got more, that’s just the way it works.

“We’re [six] games into the season. I think the fact that the season started later doesn’t really alter anything.

Usually you sit down around January to discuss some of those players.

“If there was anybody completely out of my plans then they wouldn’t be in the match-day eighteen on a regular basis.

“We’ll deal with it when we get to it but there is no imminent plan either way.”

Zohore has seen little competitive action since June.

“I think it’s see what happens in January,” Rowett said. “West Brom want to get Kenneth back playing

and I suppose if he scores a tonne of goals for us and does fantastically well they’ll have other options in terms of what they want, whether it’s permanent or whatever.

“The hope for us is that Kenneth enjoys it so much that he desperately wants to stay and we want him to stay, and it’s down to the fact that he’s performed and scored goals.

“First and foremost let’s see if we can give him the opportunity to do what he does best. He’s a very good striker in and around the penalty box. If we can get him one-v-one with defenders he’s got the ability to go past them and create chances of his own off both feet, which is hard to find.

“But January’s a long way down the line, you’re talking about nearly half a season away, about 20 games until his loan runs out, which is a phenomenal number. Three months sounds like quite a short deal but actually it’s a significant part of the season.”

Wallace, 27, was a regular in the side last season but summer signing Scott Malone started the first four league games ahead of him this campaign.

The former Scunthorpe defender is out of contract at the end of the season, one of a number of Millwall players hoping to be offered new deals.

Wallace started for the first time in the league in 2020-21 in the 2-1 win at Wycombe last weekend.

“First and foremost I’m just concentrating on starting every week, doing the best I can and seeing where it takes me,” Wallace said.

“I don’t really have many thoughts about my contract at the minute.”

Wallace is encouraged that despite clubs struggling financially having no fans in stadiums, Millwall didn’t have to cash in on any of their prized assets.

“I think that’s key to being successful, having a settled squad and not having to sell the players that have a lot of interest in them,” Wallace said. “The club have been able to say, ‘no, we don’t need to sell anyone’. The club want to focus on building the squad rather than selling and then rebuilding, essentially.”

The Lions were able to further strengthen their squad on deadline day with Kenneth Zohore joining from West Brom until January.

Wallace added: “I’ve played against him before and I thought he was a really powerful striker. I think he’ll add another side to our game.

“He’s a good finisher, he holds the ball up well. He’s neat and tidy. If he can bring us a few goals then excellent.

“There’s nothing wrong with adding another tall player and when we’re lining up for set-pieces I’m sure that gives the opposition team a bit of fear.”
