When people are evicted by private landlords it often becomes the council’s responsibility to house them. With many people out of work and struggling for money, more than 200,000 are thought to have fallen behind on rent since lockdown began in March.

The government paused evictions after lockdown began, meaning landlords could not legally kick tenants out of properties even if they were in arrears. But this ban came to an end in September, leading to fears of a spike in homelessness.

Southwark is London’s largest social housing landlord, with 55,000 properties. The borough’s waiting list for council housing has soared from 10,000-13,000 in recent months.

Some seventeen people are sleeping rough in Southwark, the council said - up from zero during lockdown when many homeless people were put up in hotels and other temporary accommodation as part of the nationwide “Everyone In” programme.

And with pressure growing on local social housing options, councillors have written to private landlords to urge them not to evict people amid the deepening cold, a worsening pandemic and mounting economic uncertainty.

The council added that it needs more money from Westminster, with around £1.8 million offered since the start of the outbreak so far.

The council said “Everyone In” alone cost about £10 million. The government gave another £30 million, which the council used to cover more general public services.

Councillor Helen Dennis, cabinet member for social support and homelessness, said: “What is desperately needed is long term, consistent and adequate funding from the Government to tackle homelessness and end rough sleeping – particularly for those who we cannot lawfully support – and for the Government to make good on its pledge to cover our Covid-related costs.

“As well as this, we need private landlords to play their part and keep a roof over tenants’ heads, and to help with the supply of homes for people as properties become empty. It should never happen that we see people becoming homeless, especially as we approach colder months, and the more difficult economic times ahead.”

To give drivers extra reassurance this is happening, we will carry out inspections at sites where concerns are raised.”

Calls for stricter bus Covid measures after driver’s death

By Kit Heren news@southwarknews.co.uk The UK’s largest trade union has pledged to demand more safety measures on London buses after a south London driver died with Covid-19.

Kofi Opoku, who worked for Metrobus from a garage in Croydon, died last week after testing positive for the virus.

Male bus drivers are reportedly among the groups that are most vulnerable to Covid-19.

At least 29 are thought to have died after contracting the disease.

After Mr Opoku’s death, Unite, which represents more than 20,000 London bus workers, said it had met with the capital’s mayor Sadiq Khan and Transport for London to raise concerns about drivers’ safety amid the pandemic.

The union said its demands included making sure protective screens and seals are properly installed, health and safety reps are stood down from normal duties to monitor safety in

garages. They added that they wanted cleaning regimes to be reviewed and beefed up after some workers raised concerns.

Access to toilets and hand-washing facilities, full sick pay from day one for workers that have to self-isolate, a moratorium on remote sign-on and proper enforcement of face coverings and caps on passenger numbers were also among Unite’s demands.

Camberwell pub The Crooked Well has launched a new workfrom-pub scheme to ‘give back’ to the regulars who supported the boozer during lockdown.

The pub, which has previously featured in the News over fears of a rent rise and the impact of the 10pm curfew, officially launched its ‘Work Well’ scheme on Friday, October 10, to coincide with World Mental Health Day. Regulars can now book a ‘COVIDsecure’ table for the day for just £7.

Upgrading to £15 means they can enjoy bottomless coffee, breakfast, lunch and a pint when they clock off.

Landlords Hector Skinner, Matt Green-Armytage, and Jennifer Aries say they hope the new offer will help people who feel trapped working from home and need a change of scene.

“One of our regulars said that he couldn’t stand working and living at home everyday and it gave us an idea to help our locals and our staff,” they explained.

“We came up with a plan, upgraded the wi-fi and now hope that ‘Work Well’ will allow our customers to feel connected with people in real life - not

just over Zoom - and remind them that they are part of a community.

“Some have told us they are looking forward to some respite from a home office which is causing them stress and anxiety and we’re so happy to help.

and local politicians, including One Dulwich and local MP Neil Coyle, to highlight that if overall traffic levels aren’t dropping, there is the very real possibility main roads - including those with social housing - will see increased pollution.

Ms Kissi-Debrah’s daughter Ella died in 2013 at the age of nine after suffering from chronic and severe asthma.

Ms Kissi-Debrah believes the scheme is fundamentally unequal as it creates mostly car-free streets and gridlocked arterial roads - which often have high numbers of poorer residents housed along them.

Councils that have implemented similar schemes across London appear to be hoping traffic will fall as people ditch cars for shorter journeys.

The petition to keep the road closures in place in Dulwich Village describes the outcry as a “small backlash against the extremely sensible road changes… most of these are time-limited to rush hours.”

And car owners are a minority in the borough.

Meanwhile, the petition to scrap the changes calls on the council to reverse all closures in the SE22 and SE24 area.

It states: "Whilst the fortunate 'few' living on the newly closed streets are enjoying pollution free air now, the 'many' living on the other streets taking the significant additional traffic burden are more polluted than ever and suffering vastly increased congestion at various different times of day.”

Its authors note that “at the same time as these road closures have been rolled out, no new investment in local public transport links have been announced… in fact bus services have been reduced.”

The group requests waiting until the full ULEZ roll-out is complete before further measures are considered without prioritising certain roads over others.

One idea worth dusting off is that of rebuilding London’s tram network. Last week, Melbourne Grove trader Lianne Ludlow said she believed a commitment to putting in new tram lines and improved bus services would help keep the climate and air pollution action ‘going in the right direction’ in a way that wouldn’t shock already struggling traders.

A ‘Southwark Supertram’ first came on the agenda in 2012 after a private company said it could deliver the project within two years - lobbying the council again in 2019.

Last week Southwark Council held its delayed climate emergency conference - and heard feedback and ideas from campaigners and groups across the borough about how it can achieve its goal of going carbon neutral by 2030. The plans that come next are sure to be some of the council’s most anticipated - and an opportunity to find some common ground.

“We are also working with the boroughs and other stakeholders to determine further funding sources for the scheme and safeguard the preferred route alignment.”

The extension is heavily backed by Southwark and Lewisham councils.

It forms a key plank of regeneration plans for the Old Kent Road area.

Officials at the town hall estimate that only nine thousand homes out of a target of 20,000 could be built if the Bakerloo does not get extended.

“The extension of the Bakerloo line would open up wider opportunities to more people and improve air quality,” states the report, due to be heard by TfL’s Programmes and Investment Committee.

“It would also support thousands of much-needed jobs and homes in the New Cross, Lewisham and Catford and Old Kent Road Opportunity Areas – something that is ever more crucial in light of the coronavirus pandemic.”

The news comes after the leaders of both Southwark and Lewisham councils accused the government of ‘game-playing’ with TfL’s finances, leading to uncertainty on whether the Bakerloo could be extended.

“It is disappointing that government game-playing with TfL’s finances means that they are unable to request funding for their largest projects – including the Bakerloo Line Extension – at this time,” said Cllr Kieron Williams of Southwark, and Mayor Damien Egan of Lewisham.

“We remain fully committed to the Bakerloo Line Extension and will do everything in our power, working together with Sadiq Khan, to deliver what will be an essential piece of infrastructure for London’s recovery from COVID-19.”

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A series of petitions against and counter petitions for Southwark’s ‘Low Emission Neighbourhoods’ have been set up by residents as it continues to be one of the most debated issues in the borough.

As this paper has extensively reported, the wholesale road changes - in the works for years under the name ‘healthy streets’ - were rushed forward under emergency COVID-19 legislation to aid

social distancing and encourage more people to walk and cycle to work.

Initially the low traffic neighbourhoods were conceived with cutting killer air pollution and improving road safety - though reducing pollution will help reduce the risks presented by the virus for people with chronic lung conditions.

An online petition to reverse the road changes in Dulwich specifically has now gathered 2,540 signatures, while a counter petition to keep them in place has been signed - in a shorter period of time - by 36.

These numbers are not an entirely representative snapshot of the numbers supportive of or against the scheme which had around 10,000 comments during its consultation earlier in the year, partly because the reaction to it has been much more complicated.

There are, broadly, three camps. Those wholly against - such as business owners like Mark Lynne, of Walworth Road’s Lynne’s Electrical, who says trading is becoming impossible.

Then there are those overwhelmingly in favour, who believe it is high time

Southwark Council took bold action to tip the balance in our streets away from motorists.

They include clean air campaigners and several schools supportive of the measures - and many cyclists rightly concerned about road safety.

Dulwich College says an unprecedented number of its staff and students were now cycling or scootering to the school and, although it cannot solely attribute this to the road changes, a spokesperson said they were “delighted with initiatives that offer improved opportunities for safe travel for pupils of all local schools.”

In the middle are those like a number of businesses we interviewed last week, based in Melbourne Grove - including the owner of Fashion Conscious - who want to see positive change but take issue over the timing of the scheme, its implementation, and monitoring.

The project would see the Bakerloo extended from Elephant and Castle into Lewisham, with tube stations on the Old Kent Road.

Last month, it was revealed that TfL would not even ask the government to fund the extension in an upcoming review as it would not be “realistic” to expect the money.

The transport authority says it will still publish a report on the Bakerloo last year “responding to issues raised” in consultation.

It says it is working with Southwark and Lewisham to find further funding sources for the extension, expected to cost anywhere between £3bn to more than £4.7bn.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk ‘Needless deaths’ will be suffered this winter unless an urgent circuit-breaker lockdown is imposed in London, says Southwark Council’s leader.

Councillor Kieron Williams said he backed Labour leader Keir Starmer’s

call for a full lockdown this month, arguing it will save lives and save Christmas.

He told the News on Tuesday night: “With positive cases rising at worrying speed in Southwark and across London, I’m calling on the government to urgently implement a circuit breaker.

“It’s imperative that we follow scientific advice without delay, or we will be risking people’s health.

“There is no way to dress up the facts here – we are at a critical point and without immediate action people in Southwark will needlessly die.

“I urge the government to follow SAGE’s advice and implement a circuit breaker this month.

“I know what a worrying time this is for our residents and businesses, but a short period of tighter restrictions could be less painful to the local economy and to families than something which essentially draws the process out for longer and risks future lockdown over Christmas as cases continue to rise.”

Southwark may not be one of the boroughs of most concern; with Ealing worst affected, but Khan says the whole of London is moving in the same direction and that the risk level could quickly change.

Government advisers Sir Patrick Vallance and Professor Whitty warned weeks ago that, if unchecked, the country was heading for a death toll of around 200 a day by November.

Addressing the nation on television, Keir Starmer urged the government to follow its own scientific advisers’ advice and not delay further measures - instead using half-term to bring cases under control now, rather than later. Blasting Johnson’s government, he said the PM and his ministers had ‘lost control of the virus’.

On Monday, Johnson unveiled his new ‘three tier’ system for local lockdowns - risking rebellion from northern MPs. It has since emerged the government rejected calls from SAGE to impose a circuit-breaker three weeks ago. The advisers had made the case for a full lockdown as opposed to Johnson’s ‘three-tier’ strategy, arguing it would reduce hospital admissions from 132,000 to 66,000 - and help to keep the NHS open to other patients.

Police appeal after reports of woman raped in Walworth churchyard

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A rape investigation has been launched after a woman was assaulted in a Walworth churchyard in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police say the victim is believed to have been attacked in the grounds of St Peter’s Church in Liverpool Grove at around 3am on Saturday, October 10.

She sought help at a nearby house with the occupants phoning police at around 4.10am.

Officers are now calling on anyone in the area who saw or heard anything that could help their investigation to get in touch.

Detective Constable Jake Good said: “This was clearly a very serious incident and we are carrying out a number of enquiries to identify the person responsible.

“I would ask that anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area at around that time to please come forward.

"Any detail – no matter how small – could assist with our investigation.”

Drive flu! Asda offers free drive-through jabs to vulnerable groups

josh@southwarknews.co.uk An ASDA store on the Old Kent Road is offering drive-through flu jabs to vulnerable people for free.

The service is being offered freeof-charge to anyone who is eligible for the jab on the NHS. These include elderly people, pregnant women and those with long-term underlying health conditions.

The Old Kent Road pharmacy said it had launched the service to minimise contact with other people for those who may be in higher risk coronavirus groups.

“The sad truth is that there is an increased mortality risk if you catch COVID-19 when you already have the flu,” said Maq Din, lead pharmacist.

“As a result some of our most vulnerable members of society are at twice the risk compared to others, which is why we are encouraging everyone to get a flu jab this year, it is more vital now than ever.”

The supermarket giant said those wanting the service can ring up the pharmacy in participating branches to book a jab.

Patients will need to drive up, and remain in the car while a pharmacist injects them in their arm through the window.

Those giving the injections will be wearing PPE and drivers will be asked to wait ten minutes after the injection before driving off to check they are not feeling any side effects.

Thirteen of the supermarket’s in-store pharmacies are offering the service, but the Old Kent Road branch is the only one in London.

Southwark given funding to roll out access to HIV prevention pill PrEP

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has been given more than £400,000 to roll out a treatment to bring down HIV rates in the borough.

Around £1 million has been made available to Southwark and Lambeth for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) which is highly effective in preventing new HIV transmissions.

In all big studies on the drug, nobody became infected when taking it as prescribed.

Southwark and Lambeth have among the country’s highest rates of HIV, with 244 new cases in 2018.

More than 2,600 people live with HIV in Southwark.

The Terrence Higgins Trust, a leading sexual health charity, said the funding is “an important day in the course of the HIV epidemic in the UK.” Roll-out of the pill begins this month, after campaigning from charities, health groups and LGBT

organisations among others. It will be made available via sexual health clinics, and had previously been available on a capped-numbers, three-year trial.

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A police probe is underway after a gun was fired in Peckham Rye’s Gowlett Road on Friday evening.

Cops were called to the scene at 6pm to reports of a moped rider firing a handgun, according to Southwark’s top cop Ch Spt Colin Wingrove.

Nobody was reported injured after the shooting but attending officers found evidence that a gun was discharged.

“A crime scene is in place while detectives begin their investigation,” Ch Supt Wingrove told the News.

Police authorised extra stop and search powers for SE5, SE15, and SE22 postcodes for 24 hours.

These powers allows officers to stop anyone in public and search

them without needing reasonable grounds to do so.

“This is in response to the incident and to prevent further serious violence,” said Ch Supt Wingrove.

“A dispersal zone under Section 35 has been authorised for the locality and time-frame.”

Those with information who have not yet spoken to police are being asked to call 101 quoting CAD 5797/08OCT.

“We have all the tools we need to stop HIV, it’s about fully utilising them and everyone knowing about them.

“More work is needed in South London and other high prevalence areas to ensure all groups most affected by HIV know about PrEP and how to access it.

“As well as PrEP being offered in other settings alongside sexual health clinics. But this is undoubtedly an important step forward as we work towards ending HIV transmissions in England by 2030.”

The majority of those taking PrEP are men who have sex with men, but it is effective in preventing transmission for other groups too.

Calls had previously been made for access to the treatment in Southwark.

Among those pushing for wider access to PrEP included Liberal Democrat councillor Victor Chamberlain, and Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP, Neil Coyle.

Teen conviction hailed stop and search success A seventeen-year-old boy has confessed to possessing a knife after being stopped and searched in Southwark.

The teen, who cannot be named, pleaded guilty to possessing a knife at Bexley Magistrates’ Court last Thursday, October 9.

He was referred to a Youth Offender Panel for six months, and ordered to pay £22 as a victim surcharge. Those referred to the panel are typically firsttime offenders. The youngster, who was stopped-and-searched by police in Southwark just the day before, was found with the knife hidden in his shoes.

Inspector Paul Howlett, from the Violence Suppression Unit in Southwark and Lambeth, said: “Our officers are out every day conducting patrols and other proactive activity to target our top priority - violent crime.

“This incident shows how valuable stop and search is as a tactic for removing weapons off the streets - this knife could have been used to cause harm to someone had we not seized it.

“We will continue to use all of the tactics available to us to suppress violent crime in the area.”

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A teacher who sustained a serious head injury while taking part in a charity bike ride in memory of one of the pupils at her school has died in hospital.

In a statement published on the Charter School North Dulwich website last week, head teacher Christian Hicks said Karla Pappon had passed away ‘peacefully’ at 5pm on Sunday, October 4, after two weeks in the care of St George’s Hospital in Tooting.

Karla, the school’s assistant special educational needs coordinator, was involved in a tragic accident during a London to Brighton sponsored ride she was taking part in with nineteen other members of staff on September 19.

Fuller, who died in May of this year from leukaemia.

The ride was held in September during childhood cancer awareness month.

So far, more than £15,000 has been raised towards research into new blood cancer treatments in memory of Ruby, who would have turned nineteen this month.

Ruby's mother, Emma, said she was ‘desperately sad’ at how the bike ride had ended, and how

‘unbearably cruel’ life can be saying her thoughts were with Karla’s family.

Described as much-loved and with ‘boundless enthusiasm and energy’, Karla had worked in the school’s learning support department for a decade; specialising in maths.

Karla also ran the school’s tennis club and was involved in various volunteer groups including the Duke of Edinburgh programme.

The school closed early on Friday

last week to give staff and students time to reflect on the tragedy.

In his address to the school, head teacher Christian Hicks said: “Karla was an outstanding member of staff, loved by colleagues, students and parents for her warmth, kindness and humour.

“She was an excellent teacher and a wonderful person who contributed so much to the school and gave so much to our students, particularly to our most vulnerable students.

“As head teacher, I talk to staff and students regularly about our values of excellence and family – helping students to be the best they can be, going the extra mile, and showing care and love for those around us – nobody embodied these values on a day-to-day basis more than Karla.

“Her dedication to her students has been incredibly inspiring to those around her and as a school we are so grateful to have benefitted from her generosity of spirit, her energy and her dedication over many years. She truly embodied the very best of Charter.”

In tributes shared in an online book of memories and condolences, one parent described her son’s lasting memory of Karla as ‘smiling, ready

to help’, while another said the ‘enthusiasm, kindness and dedication’ shown towards their daughter would always be remembered: “You’ve helped give her the confidence to move forward in life, you’ll always be part of her successes.”

Students described her as ‘caring and enthusiastic. I would treasure all the memories I had with Ms Pappon’, ‘an amazing teacher’, and someone who ‘listened to all my worries throughout the years, supported us all through them’.

In the words of one devastated parent: “I am so grateful to Karla, who was a support not only to my children but also myself, navigating through the rollercoaster of life.

“Karla was generous and selfless, committed to the children and her school and all the people close to her.

“Her spirit was so strong - always throwing herself into things with gusto. She has done so much for so many.

“She is resting with the angels and will always be remembered we love you and appreciate you so much Karla - thank you.”

Speaking to the News on Tuesday, Mr Hicks said the school will take some time to think of ways to honour Karla’s legacy but, in the meantime, he hopes the school’s community will continue to support the fundraising challenge she was taking part in at the time of her injury.

“Raising £15,000 is an incredible achievement,” he said. “We will always remember Ruby and Karla, they will always be part of our Charter community.”

DENTAL NURSES FILL

IN DURING PANDEMIC MORE THAN 140 dental nurses have taken on new roles across different areas of Guy’s and St Thomas’ to support the Trust’s response to coronavirus.

Due to the pandemic, Guy’s and St Thomas’ dental department was forced to postpone all appointments except emergency dental work, leaving a surplus of eager dental nurses wanting to help wherever they were needed.

Sharanpreet Bumbra has been a dental nurse at the Trust for almost five years and volunteered to work in the renal department.

In late March, Sharanpreet began looking after renal patients with coronavirus.

The 26-year-old underwent rigorous training and shadowing before taking on her own workload as a nursing assistant for 14 weeks. “The first six or seven weeks were so busy and very demanding, but I really loved it.

“When my shifts finished at 3.30pm, I wanted to stay longer. I was able to change to 12 hours shifts, even working some nights, as I wanted to experience everything I could and help out as much as I could.”

“I’m really proud of myself. I really gave my all. I’m now back in the dental department and more confident than I’ve ever been before.”

Dental nurses were redeployed to several areas throughout the Trust, including intensive care, oncology, phlebotomy and the Cancer Centre at Guy’s. The nurses also helped to run the staff coronavirus swabbing and antibody testing services.

And in response to the pandemic, an emergency supplies store was opened where staff could get free essential groceries, managed largely by dental nurses. Dental nurses were also trained as wellbeing advisors, providing a listening ear for staff.

These initiatives were funded by Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity.

Samantha Salaver, head of dental nursing, said: “More than three quarters of all dental nurses were redeployed to other areas and my inbox is full of emails praising the staff and the work they’ve done in the hospitals and out in the community.

I’m so proud of the way my team have gone above and beyond to help wherever they were needed in such a challenging time.”

borough market terror officer gets palace award from her maj An officer from the Met’s bomb disposal team has been awarded an MBE after four decades working alongside counter terrorism staff.

In his career Wilton Grey has supported teams at the scene of more than 50 attacks and other incidents; including the IRA bombing at Hyde Park and 2017’s

terrorist attacks in London Bridge and Borough Market.

In his role he has been ‘instrumental’ in developing specialist robots that can help with controlled explosions - conserving vital evidence.

He said: “Receiving this award came as a complete surprise but I am honoured to be recognised in

such a way. The award has come at a poignant time as I just reached 40 years’ service with the Met. “The Met has provided me with great opportunities and I’m so proud to be part of the organisation, especially now as it has transformed into such a professional and caring place with more opportunities and full of dedicated officers and staff.”

Five Southwark residents are honoured in Queen’s birthday list Five Southwark locals have been recognised as part of the Queen’s birthday honours list.

Felicia Margaret Kwaku, Gloria Pottinger, Christine Margaret Annis, Valerie Anne Peterkin and Katharine St John-Brooks were among those given gongs this year.

Ms Kwaku, an associate director of nursing at Kings College NHS Foundation Trust, was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to nursing.

Foster carer Ms Pottinger was given an OBE for her services to children and young people in the borough.

Ms Annis, a manager at Downside Fisher Youth Club on Druid Street was made a Medallist of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to the young people of Bermondsey.

Ms Peterkin, an assistant leader of the

Bermondsey Girl Guide group, was awarded an MBE for voluntary service for young people in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe. Ms St John-Brooks, president of Link Age Southwark was given an MBE for her services for older people and the wider Southwark community.

The awards are usually handed out in June. This year’s honours list was delayed to include people, like key workers and volunteers, who have been instrumental in efforts to combat the effects of the coronavirus outbreak.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “This year’s honours recipients are a testament to the sort of country we are – caring, compassionate and resolute in the face of a global pandemic. The hard work and dedication of these local, often unsung heroes has helped carry us through. I congratulate them all.”

award for breast cancer survivor Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis was in Peckham last week to present breast cancer campaigner Leanne Pero with a National Lottery Award.

Leanne, who was diagnosed at just 30 in 2016, set up the Leanne Pero Foundation to raise awareness and improve education about breast cancer among the black community and to support other black women living with the disease.

She underwent chemotherapy and a bilateral mastectomy after being told she had stage three cancer, before being given the all-clear in 2017.

From Peckham, Leanne has featured in the News many times for her community work and commitment to helping other BAME women affected by cancer.

Mountview’s chair, Vikki Heywood, has been appointed a ‘Dame Commander’ for services to drama and the Royal Society for the Arts (RSA).

Ms Heywood, who already holds a CBE, has enjoyed a forty-year career in the arts. She has overseen the rebuilding of two national theatres, produced more than 100 worldpremiere theatre productions, chaired UK-wide arts festivals, and become the only person invited to serve two terms as chair of the Royal Society for the Arts.

At Mountview she led the £30million capital campaign to build the school's new home in Peckham.

Upon news of her new honour,

Mountview’s joint chief executives Stephen Jameson and Sarah Preece said: “Vikki is an inspirational leader and a true Titan in her field.

“Her warmth, energy, empathy with our students and knowledge of running a leading organisation have been vital to Mountview becoming a leading player in the Southwark cultural scene.”

Ms Heywood's previous roles include executive director of the Royal Shakespeare Company from 2003 until 2012, joint chief executive of the Royal Court Theatre, and executive producer roles in the West End and Broadway; including for Matilda the Musical. She was awarded a CBE in 2012 for services to British theatre.

“It is incredibly important to me that other black women are given the opportunity to share their cancer experiences and feel supported by a community of individuals in the same terrifying situation. “Thanks to National Lottery players, I’ve been able to see my visions come to life in wonderful ways.”

Denise Lewis, who lost her grandmother to cancer in 2005, added: “It was an absolute delight to meet Leanne and present her with a National Lottery Award for the incredible support she has provided to so many black cancer patients. She is an inspiration to us all.”

Tom and Sam together A Goldsmiths university student is taking on a 24-hour rowing challenge in Peckham to raise money for Macmillan after his brother was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer.

Earlier this year, 20-year-old Tom Leeming, a second year Fine Art student at Goldsmiths College, University of London, received news of his brother Sam’s diagnosis.

Sam, a promising fly-half, first had symptoms after a routine training session with professional rugby team Jersey Reds, when he started vomiting.

After going for a scan, doctors found a lump on his lungs.

He was later diagnosed with a rare form of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, which had been causing breathing difficulties, and has since returned to their family home in Darlington to have treatment.

Trying to recall the moment he found out about his brother's illness, Tom told the News: “Since Sam’s diagnosis, it’s actually all been a bit of a blur.

“To be honest, I’ve been feeling a bit helpless. It’s sad that I can’t help my Mum and Dad with the cooking and other things. With COVID as well, it’s made it even more difficult.”

He says the care and guidance from Macmillan Cancer Support has been

invaluable in helping Sam through his chemotherapy.

“More than anything, Macmillan have been a huge help in providing information that you can’t get anywhere else," Tom explained.

“The amount of work they have done just being there to support Sam and answering any questions he has.

“They’ve been so good to my Mum and Dad, keeping their minds at ease because it’s been a big thing to take on board.”

With Sam being a professional rugby player and Tom very much into exercising, a mammoth endurance challenge seemed like the only thing

to do.

Laughing, Tom told the News: “It sounds a bit silly but if I was to do anything less than row for 24 hours, what’s the point?

"I think Sam would almost want to join in and in his current situation, I don’t think that’s the best thing for him.

“I hope by doing something like this I can make the best out of the situation, helping Sam and helping others who are going through what we are going through.”

Tom has been training hard for the event which will be taking place on Saturday 21st November at The Yard,

Peckham’s first CrossFit box based in Copeland Park - just a minute’s walk from Peckham Rye station.

He is encouraging people to get involved and join him virtually by doing a run, cycle or even try 24 hours of rowing themselves. He has also created a GoFundMe page that has almost doubled its goal of £1,500 in two weeks.

“In the last couple of weeks, Sam has received an unreal amount of support from friends and family and I can’t thank them all enough," he said.

nothing says i love you like washed up plastic

A crafty woman from Peckham has used her time on furlough to make greeting cards from plastic washed up on the River Thames.

Flora Blathwayt was inspired to start ‘Washed Up Cards’ after taking part in a beach clean by London Bridge last year.

At a clean, each volunteer is given a big refuse sack, a litter picker, and a patch to tidy. After the event, Flora decided to keep some of the microplastics she found, debris usually the size of a fingernail, and use them to make a special wedding card for her sister.

She told the News: “My sister had been living plastic-free for a couple of years and I was like, ‘Wow, how has she managed to do this?’

“I decided not to give her a shop-bought card in plastic packaging, but make my own with the washed-up plastic I picked up instead.

“She and her husband loved it and I continued to make them for friends and family and my own enjoyment for about a year.”

When the lockdown hit and Flora was furloughed, she also discovered the positive impact making the cards had on her mental health. She would weave in a quick run down to the riverside during her daily exercise and spend the evenings crafting ‘Happy Birthday’, ‘Thank you’

and ‘Good luck’ greeting cards.

“I have had a tough six months and I found that getting up in the morning with a purpose and feeling like I was doing something for the environment was therapeutic.

“I’m reading a book about the special power of water and how looking at it and immersing yourself in it is very soothing.

I want to continue to explore this link between nature and therapy further.”

Flora set up her Etsy page in May and sales have gone from strength to strength, with punny messages such as “Get whale soon” and “Ewe are the best” being among the most popular.

She has collaborated with the sustainable toilet paper company ‘Who Gives a Crap?’ whose funky packaging is used to wrap her cards. Behind the scenes, she is looking to organise socially distant beach cleans and is also in talks with large retailers.

“I was shocked to hear from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the sea than fish unless the industry cleans up its act.

“Really it’s not just about the cards and the plastic that I collect because, in the grand scheme of things, it’s very nominal.

“But I think by spreading awareness of plastic pollution in this fun and engaging way will hopefully show people that little actions do make a difference and they make you feel good.”

Mona Edwards: A lifetime of caring

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Rose Court care home is celebrating Black History Month by highlighting the achievements of the residents who came to the UK for a new life and made a huge contribution to Southwark.

The Rotherhithe care home in Lower Road is now home to Mona Edwards, an eighty-nine-year-old former teacher, nurse and well-known Southwark volunteer and childminder.

Mona, who was born in 1930 in Grenada, moved to Trinidad with her parents as a baby. After leaving school she became a teacher and set up her own nursery, but decided to move to the UK at the age of 26 after separating from her first husband.

She boarded a ship called the Greater Antilles, and sailed to Britain hoping to become a nurse. After landing in Southampton in 1957, Mona trained at Leavesden Hospital in Hertfordshire, later meeting her second husband, with whom she went on to have five children.

Jacinta Edwards-Marshall, Mona’s daughter from her first marriage, said: “Mum spent a lot of time juggling her career as a nurse and raising her five children.

“She worked in various hospitals, including St Giles Hospital in Camberwell, St Francis Hospital in Dulwich and Guys and St Thomas’s hospitals.”

After sustaining back injuries through the job, she switched career and became a secretary at King’s College Hospital to gastroenterology surgeon Andrew Leather, who years later would operate on Jacinta when

Jacinta said: “Mum was at my bedside the morning after my surgery and Mr Leather, who was doing his morning rounds called out to mum by name, I can’t forget that, and reassured her that I was in safe hands. I felt so relieved.”

Mona later joined the Post Office as a telegraphist, until she retired at the age of 60.

“Mum spent an enormous amount of time with her grandchildren and was a registered childminder in Southwark in the 1990s,” Jacinta added.

“She was an active person at her local church on Rodney Road, Walworth.

Everyone knew her there.

“She also volunteered at English Martyrs Primary School near to her church, mentoring the after-school club.”

Sue Aryan, Manager of Rose Court, said

celebrating Black History Month was a way to celebrate the achievements of residents and staff. The home will also be holding a special party.

“I feel proud that we are now looking after Mona after all she has done for the local community, whether it was patients at the local hospitals, the schoolchildren or members of her church.

“It’s so important that organisations celebrate Black History Month and use this opportunity to raise awareness of Black history and culture – for many people, it can be a first step to embrace and celebrate diversity and difference all year round.

“We have many residents living in Anchor’s care homes and staff members who came for a new life in Britain and they have made such a great contribution to society that we wanted to celebrate their achievements.”

The Rising Star awards are given to black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) workers by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) as part of its celebration of Black History Month, which always falls in October.

The awards celebrate people who give a voice to staff and patients, empower themselves or encourage others to take action, and who show compassion, innovation, and leadership, the RCN said.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ Grace Milner, a clinical nurse specialist for plasma cell disorders, and Deon Irozuru, a staff nurse in the endoscopy unit, were among the prize winners this year.

Grace said: “It’s an honour to accept the award. Throughout my career I have striven and continue to raise the profile and give a voice to those with a rare blood cancer that disproportionately affects members within our community.

“Representation and inclusivity are

Richard Taylor OBE has launched Hope 2020, a memorial campaign on the 20th anniversary of his son's death.

At the event, the club unveiled its new Black Lives Matter banner, funded with help from the Rio Ferdinand Foundation.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of the talents and achievements of young people and support young role models - as well as continuing the fight against knife crime.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Mental health experts, the Crown Prosecution Service and police officers in Southwark are working together in a pilot scheme aiming to raise the number of successful prosecutions following assaults on emergency workers.

Operation Cavell will ensure senior investigators review all crimes against NHS workers over the next four months in Southwark, Lambeth, Bromley, Croydon and Sutton.

According to the Met, over the last three years the number of violent attacks in health and social care was three times as high as other industries.

Figures by Unison reveal that across the UK there were more than 56,000 physical assaults on NHS workers in the same period.

Michael Holland, the Maudsley and

South London NHS Foundation Trust’s medical director, said: “Our staff should be able to come to work without fear of violence, injury, abuse or harassment.

“As an organisation, the safety, health and wellbeing of our colleagues is of paramount importance and I hope this valuable partnership work will help our staff feel safer and more supported.”

The trust’s local security management specialist, Simon Jackson, said that currently only seven per cent of those who commit physical assaults on health workers are prosecuted.

Chief Inspector Luke Mooney, who is leading the operation for the South Area Command Unit in collaboration with colleagues from the Central South Command Unit, said: “The Met has worked very hard recently to ensure assaults against officers are rigorously investigated and this has seen an increase in convictions.

“We want to bring the same support

to assaults on NHS workers. We are liaising closely with the CPS and the NHS trusts concerned and together we are driving the project forward.

“Assaults on NHS staff are totally unacceptable, these are people dedicated to helping others and preventing harm.

“NHS workers are facing incredible challenges at the moment, they should not have to face the additional concern of abuse or assault.

“This operation is a way of showing these brave frontline workers that they are being supported.

“All those involved will be carefully monitoring the results and, just as importantly, seeking feedback from those affected.

“We want to make sure we learn the lessons, from either successes or failures, and ensure that continuous improvement is at the heart of this operation.”

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A woman collecting her daughter from nursery is the latest victim of a group of teenagers on bikes terrorising passersby in Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays.

Her husband, who wished to remain anonymous, told the News she was left ‘anxious, frustrated, and angry’ after a group of ‘ten to fifteen’ teenagers, goaded on by two ringleaders, began throwing fireworks around the Swan Lane area on Monday evening.

She had been on her way to collect her young daughter from a nearby nursery when she came across the group.

“She managed to get away and called me, she was panicked, and although she wasn’t hurt it is such a dangerous and stupid thing to do,” he said.

“I have previously heard or seen the fireworks being thrown when in shops nearby, but this is the first time it has personally happened to us.

“I am now restructuring my working day because I am not leaving my wife and daughter to go on their own.”

As the News has reported, damage to businesses, thrown fireworks and anti-social behaviour by a regular

cohort of young people has been a recurring problem for the area for months - but so far no one has been prosecuted, leading to rising tensions among frustrated residents and business owners.

“It’s not the Kray brothers or the Mafia, it’s ten kids on bikes. It should be solvable," the father-of-one added.

Last week we detailed how police had committed to extra patrols in the area around the plaza, and had also put a dispersal order in place - but problems are persisting.

The News has been told by residents that they beieve officers are reluctant to make arrests as the suspects are minors. Many of the group’s victims are unwilling to go on record highlighting the fear in the community of coming forward.

One person who was willing to be named in our previous report was Ledbelly’s owner Paul Graham, who described the group as ‘quite menacing’, and said the problems had been ‘brewing for a long time’. He said the problem was so severe his staff had to call the Met several times in one week.

Southwark police were contacted for a comment and update but received no response at the time of going to press.

there are so many post-16 Opportunities It’s now time to make some real decisions about your future - once you have taken your GCSEs you officially will be an adult, writes Kevin Quinn...

Mum and dad will no longer be responsible for your education, nor will the government; and believe it or not, neither will your teachers.

It will be entirely up to you to decide which path you take - and while everyone including the government is heavily focused on apprenticeships, there will be many of you who will want to follow the traditional academic route. Of course the results you get at secondary school will to a large extent determine what you do in further education. But now is the time to look at what sixth forms and further education institutes are offering.

Unlike secondary school admissions you have the freedom to go where you like - it does not have to be local - but bear in mind journey times. You don’t want to be exhausted before you arrive

at college!

Being in the final year of your GCSEs, you will have a fair idea of the results you are likely to achieve and make sure that when you call or visit a sixth form or college you find out the exact qualifications you need to get on the courses that you like the look of.

The truth is, if you are really passionate about a course but feel that you might not get the grades, it would be worth thinking about re-sitting.

After spending the whole of your life in school you might think that re-sitting any GCSE would be completely out of the question. However, at your age, making sure that you do something that you feel passionate about and enjoy is absolutely vital. Countless people have had to work that bit harder and give something a go twice before they succeed. The experience at sixth form or college will be so different to that at school that you should find the change enough to warrant the extra effort and time it takes to re-sit an examine or start

a new one to get on to the course you are ultimately after.

The relationship with most of your teachers will be very different, as they will treat you more like an adult. After all you don’t have to be there - it is your choice.

This means that lessons are normally more relaxed and you usually spend more time with smaller groups than you would do at secondary school.

While there is little doubt that A-levels are much harder than GCSEs, the fact that you have fewer subjects and are studying your favourite or best subjects means you will find the self-motivation to get to grips with it.

The work will be much more in depth, but probably more interesting. Essay subjects at A-level are much more about analysis and evaluation than just pure facts. This means that you can no longer get away with having a basic knowledge of a subject and then blagging the exam or just learning reams of facts without actually understanding them.

On the plus side you definitely get more freedom, including free periods (usually eleven or so hours a week), which allows you to plan when and how you work.

As well as the courses, check out the facilities at the sixth forms and colleges you are interested in, as they can help make your whole working environment a better one.

BERMONDSEY’S St Michael’s Catholic College has said it was delighted to celebrate with all Year 13 students who received their results on 13th August and rightly enjoyed their success.

We have 57 COVID cases per 100,000 and Boris has lost control of tracing

I

have tried to be as supportive as possible of measures to protect people, the NHS and jobs during this unique and challenging time. The initial lockdown was late but essential.

The support to ‘furlough’ so many people to ensure they kept their jobs went further than some of us expected from this government.

Some schemes, like those backing small businesses, have even been improved through my direct intervention with ministers and have benefitted Southwark employers. But it has now been nine months since the prime minister was warned by the World Health Organisation of the risks of COVID and we still do not have an effective test and trace system and the ‘world-beating’ guff from Johnson has worn thin. He has been put to shame when compared with Italy and Germany, where the systems are working and the spread has been better managed as a result.

In June Johnson promised we would be able to get COVID tests and the results within 24 hours but this is still not happening and insufficient capacity means people from Southwark being told to travel to Scotland for tests. The government also lost control of tracing, embarrassingly using a very limited Excel document to process tens of thousands of tests a day. I asked the health secretary to take responsibility for this catastrophe in the commons but Johnson’s team are far too used to passing the buck.

In Southwark it is imperative that you take care of each other.

Case numbers are lower than other parts of the country but recent data shows 57 cases per 100,000 people and rising. As the second wave builds, the protections which previously helped families and businesses are being removed. Businesses helped by support grants; jobs

protected through furloughing and the self-employment income support scheme; and the eviction ban preventing people from becoming homeless. But, even with this help, local unemployment doubled and for local sixteen to 24-year-olds it tripled.

Unemployment will sadly rise further and with evictions resuming we could see many more people left with no choice but to sleep rough. But the restrictions put in place to protect us from the virus make it virtually impossible for homeless charities to offer communal shelters this coming winter. Shameful statistics from last year show that two homeless people a day died on our streets before COVID. Now rough sleepers face the doubly lethal threat of the virus and cold weather this winter. I have raised this issue in parliament many times in the last few weeks, including with the prime minister directly, urging the government to act urgently. His team have so far refused to even meet with homeless charities to address this preventable crisis.

In better news, there is decisive progress in tackling another virus.

Greater access to the medication ‘PrEP’ which prevents the transmission of HIV, is something I have campaigned for since my first election as your MP in 2015 as HIV prevalence is very high in our borough. Previously, the government delayed meeting its promise to double spaces on medical trials and I have worked with campaigners and organisations to bring forward more help. It is fantastic news that this life saving drug is now widely available, with almost half a million pounds of additional support being provided to our community. If only the government would make better progress with tackling and testing for the coronavirus.

Judy Ling Wong, founder of the Black Environment Network, was an inspiring speaker at the Southwark Climate Emergency Conference on 8 October.

She spoke of how creativity and play can transform our cities, ending her presentation with a montage of photos including the lush greenery of Bonnington Square and the jazzy pedestrian crossings in Brixton that are helping to reclaim streets for people on foot.

Around 150 people took part in the online conference. In ten workshop discussions on areas such as housing, food, transport, waste and energy, Southwark residents offered lots of practical ideas and called for urgent action.

Suggestions included a council-led task force to insulate every home in the borough; a public information campaign on how to switch energy suppliers from fossil fuels to renewable sources; and a scheme offering businesses incentives to go plastic-free.

It was good to hear new council leader Kieron Williams point out that changes to address the climate emergency will also make Southwark fairer. For example, people who can’t afford to heat their homes at the moment will benefit from energy efficiency measures.

There were some powerful challenges to current Southwark Council policies and practices. On video, pupils from Charlotte Sharman Primary School asked the adults watching to ‘Please stop cutting down the trees’. Southwark Council has allowed the borough to suffer a net loss of thousands of trees in the last decade by failing to replant felled trees; its contractors have carried out non-urgent work in nesting season and failed to water young trees.

And when councillor Johnson Situ (cabinet member for Climate Emergency, Planning and Transport) said that he would ask developers to ‘seriously consider refurbishment’, a commenter in the chat said concisely: ‘Refurbishment should be the basic assumption; demolition the exception.’

I hope to see residents’ proposals included in the council’s long-awaited Climate Emergency strategy. But even more important than any one ‘big idea’ is education, right across the council, for both staff and elected representatives. The climate emergency should inform every single decision, at every level. As Greta Thunberg said in January 2019: "I want you to act as if the house is on fire, because it is."

What form of transport can we afford?

W

e are now at a crossroads when it comes to Southwark’s transport plans - even green campaigners are increasingly coming out against largescale infrastructure projects.

HS2, Crossrail, tube extensions and the impact of demolition and rebuilding all come at a huge carbon cost.

TfL’s finances are a mess, and the Bakerloo Line extension is looking more precarious than ever after the impact of COVID-19 and changing government priorities.

The hugely delayed Crossrail will link up commuter towns to the city - but will the demand still be there if we are all working from home? Will the legal battles, fights over heritage buildings being demolished, and the huge cost be worth it?

From a political perspective, if the Conservatives’ newly-won ‘Red Wall’ is at risk of crumbling, the government’s attention may well turn to the comparatively unconnected north and other regions.

So will improving transport in south London

really be a priority for central government?

Short-term changes to improve connectivity for walkers and cyclists may be controversial now but, as is apparent in our report this week, the reaction to ‘low emission neighbourhoods’ has been far from a single ‘for’ or ‘against’.

Some people are wary of the implementation, or the timing. Business owners have told us they broadly support the moves - but don’t think imposing it during a pandemic is a good idea due to reduced services on buses and trains.

Others are in favour but say limited public transport isn’t fixing the east-west travel problems, and congestion on main roads is worsening.

So given that we have until 2030 to go carbon neutral, waiting for a magic solution to come along in ten or twenty years’ time - that still may or may not happen - doesn’t really cut it.

We still back the Bakerloo and that won’t change.

But our question is: what can Southwark and TfL afford, that could be completed by 2025, at the latest?

Peckham demonstration for live event workers struggling in the crisis Young people are refering themselves to Southwark’s free mental health centre

By Kit Heren news@southwarknews.co.uk Dozens of people came to a Peckham drama school to share their support and solidarity for live events workers affected by the coronavirus crisis.

The event, held at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts on Peckham Hill Street, saw staff and students come to the school dressed in red as part of a global day of action on September 30. The Mountview lights were also turned red.

A spokesperson for Mountview said in a statement: “We had a great turnout and it was fantastic to be able to raise [awareness] in a

peaceful and socially-distanced way.”

As part of the wider campaign, called #WeMakeEvents, events venues and other buildings were lit up in red to highlight the issues facing people who work in performance industries like plays and live music much of which has been cancelled or greatly reduced amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the UK, organisations including the London Eye, the O2 Arena, Glastonbury Festival, the National Theatre, Royal Opera House, Reading Festival were lit in red.

Performers including Fat Boy Slim, Noel Gallagher, Radiohead, Foals, Gorillaz, Skunk Anansie and James Bay also voiced support for the

cause.

Jeremy Rees, CEO of ExCeL London in Custom House, said: “Before Covid-19, the UK events industry was a world-class sector worth £70bn, employing over 700,000 people, across 25,000 businesses.

The pandemic has had a devastating impact on our sector. We’re calling on the Government to extend the support available to our industry and provide clarity on when the events sector will be able to reopen.

“We are totally committed to continuing to work with the Government to explore ways of resuming business in a safe, COVIDsecure manner and are determined to build confidence around this.”

The centre, called The Nest, is free and provides early intervention and preventative mental health support for young people in the borough. The service is funded by the council and run by local charity Groundwork London.

The Nest is part of Southwark’s pledge to provide all young people in the borough with mental health support, and young people who have used the service have spoken out about how much it helped them.

Like many people, Sophia, 14, whose name has been changed for anonymity, said she felt more isolated after lockdown began in March, and was referred for support by her father.

“I personally think that I had a super experience with The Nest,” Sophia said.

“They were so kind and helpful and I felt really understood. Without support from The Nest, things would still be the same at home. So I thank them for everything they have done for me.”

Jordan, 24, whose name has also been changed, said he got in touch with the Nest while he was waiting for a mental health diagnosis.

“I’m finding my one-to-one sessions with the wellbeing coach are going well so far,” he said.

“In my case, I’ve always just needed a comfortable space to vent about my traumas and figure out the causes to some of the emotions and anxiety I’ve been experiencing. I feel that this is what I’m getting through working with

The Nest.”

The Nest was originally due to open fully in May, but this was delayed by coronavirus lockdown. Instead the centre launched as a remote service and has provided over 200 hours of phone and online support. The Rye Lane centre opened its doors for inperson sessions in August.

Cllr Jasmine Ali, Southwark’s deputy leader and cabinet member for children, young people and schools, said: “Access to mental health support has never been more important as we navigate this period of great stress and uncertainty, especially for our children and young people.

“Bearing the brunt of the pandemic’s devastating impact on mental health, they’ve had to adjust to hugely unsettling changes in their education or employment, routine and home life.

“All children and young people deserve to get mental health support when they need it, on demand, without waiting for a referral and we’ll accept nothing less for those in our borough.

“Despite the challenges posed

by Covid-19, The Nest has quickly established itself as a trusted and accessible source of mental health support for Southwark’s children and young people.

“It’s a credit to the fantastic team working at The Nest that so many young people feel confident to reach out for help when they need it most.

We look forward to continuing our work with Groundwork to ensure the service reaches all who need support from The Nest.”

Peckham’s Mountview is offering free drama school scholarships for Southwark residents

By Kit Heren news@southwarknews.co.uk A Peckham drama school has opened up free places for drama school courses to young people living in Southwark and BAME people.

Mountview, on Peckham Hill Road, has launched two online courses this autumn to help people thinking

about applying for drama school with audition techniques.

The courses, which run for four weeks each, usually cost £250. A place from each course will be given to a young Southwark resident or a person of colour, who can live outside the borough, the school said.

The courses - called online audition prep “bootcamps” - are being given for both acting and musical theatre. People

who take part will be taught about the audition process, how to choose the right materials for auditions, how to break down Shakespearean, classical and contemporary texts and other core acting skills. Current students on the longer courses will also be available to share their experiences.

Everyone who takes part gets a free audition for a longer course at Mountview afterwards.

The bootcamps include 16 hours of contact time on Zoom on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Courses run from Tuesday 17 October-Thursday 19 November and Tuesday 24 November-Thursday 17 December.

History

The hottest Spa in town

A lavish tea garden and health spa with dancing clowns, fine art and fireworks saw dandies flocking to Bermondsey Spa Over two centuries ago Bermondsey was a green and pleasant backwater reclining on the doorstep of the City of London.

It was mainly pasture land with the odd windmill and market gardens, writes Debra Gosling...

The Neckinger was then a clear overground stream that babbled through the area. The air was clean and fresh; there was no overcrowded population and no smelly industries to pollute the atmosphere. Little wonder then, that in 1765 Thomas Keyse decided to set up business in this paradise.

Keyse enjoyed some success with his paintings, so with some money in his pocket he bought the Waterman’s Arms, an old inn on Grange Road. It came with seven acres of land and bordered the picturesque ruins of Bermondsey Abbey. Here he used his creative flair to open a rather pleasant tea garden.

Tea gardens were the eighteenth century Starbucks for the well-heeled, who believed taking tea there gave them status and segregated them from the aleswilling working class. People preferred to drink tea and coffee as the water had to be boiled in preparation and they knew it was safe to drink. Pox and disease were still prevalent and the plagues of yesteryear hadn’t been forgotten.

As luck would have it, in 1771 Keyse discovered a water source in his gardens

and quickly jumped on the health spa bandwagon. The water there, from a chalybeate spring, was said to have healing properties and be rich in iron.

Some believed it to be a miracle cure for everything from gout to smallpox.

Others said it was just muddy water that Keyse was passing off as mineral water, which brings to mind Del Boy’s Peckham Spring!

The whereabouts of the spring is no longer known. Some say it was on the premises of Young’s glue factory (now Henley Drive), others say it was further down Spa Road near the railway arches.

Who knows? Perhaps one day it will bubble up to the surface again.

Bermondsey Spa soon had London’s dandies arriving in their carriages to take the waters and be seen at the newest and most fashionable social venue. Ladies in silk gowns and powdered wigs stepped over the muddy lanes in their satin slippers to get to the spa. Tea and cakes were served to them beneath the bunting and fairy lights that decorated the entire gardens.

One late August afternoon the changing season was celebrated with an ‘Autumnal Jubilee’. It was advertised as “an exhibition of an Enchanted Temple decorated with many thousands of additional lights. The Orchestra will be playing a concerto and the Military Band will be dressed in full uniform.”

In addition, there were fireworks, a hot air balloon and a dancing clown.

The clown performed his routine with fireworks tied to his hands and feet! The festivities concluded with a Grand Fairy Dance; pretty good value for the two-and-six entry fee.

Keyse would think up ever more flamboyant entertainments to thrill his customers. He had the best firework displays in London, put on largescale epic costume dramas and used pyrotechnics and explosives to re-create battle scenes. In 1792 he advertised a ‘Grand display of Fireworks on land and water incorporating the Famous Battle of the Fiery Dragons’. Presumably the water source for this extravaganza was the nearby Neckinger. He employed a team of writers and musicians to create

the dramas, songs and poems for his productions. There were even special songs written for the spa and no doubt he sold the sheet music as souvenirs.

The shows became so well known that royalty and overseas visitors visited Bermondsey Spa. Keyse’s still life pictures of grocers’ and fishmongers’ produce pulled the crowds in.

One painting especially caught the public eye; a huge depiction of a butcher’s shop that covered one wall in the upstairs gallery of the inn. The founder of the Royal Academy, Sir Joshua Reynolds, crossed the water to inspect the paintings and even got advice from him on using oil colour to its best effect.

Thomas Keyse died in 1800 at the age of seventy-nine. The Spa Gardens closed five years after his death and were left

to grow over; the inn became a school for young ladies. Later, the Greenwich railway was built over part of the site and other parts were occupied by Pearce & Duff’s custard factory and Young’s glue works.

what’s on Playhouse Rerun is Bittersweet Triumph

in Southwark

After its run was cut short in March – for reasons none of us need reminding of – Jason Rob-ert Brown’s beloved musical The Last Five Years is back at Southwark Playhouse complete with Perspex barriers between seats and a facemasked audience. Even so, what a return it is, writes Rosie O’Connell...

Struggling actress Cathy opens the show with Still Hurting, evoking all the pain and anger of the breakdown of her five year relationship with Jamie, which she goes on to tell in reverse chronological order, from end to beginning.

With each song alternating between them Jamie tells his side of the story from start to finish, moving forward in time. Though failing to see eye to eye throughout their retellings, it is fit-ting, then, that the pair barely meet at all and struggle to stay on the same page.

Jamie Platt’s lighting of melancholy blues and warm oranges gently guide the audience through the conflicting narrative, while Lee Newby’s simple staging comprised of a piano at the centre of a revolve, gives the piece a moody, chic cocktail bar vibe. Jonathan O’Boyle’s direction has both performers on stage through the whole 90 minute run time as they accom-pany each other on the piano throughout, allowing their characters to interject emotion into the other’s melodies until they finally come together in the middle of the piece for The Next Ten Minutes.

Molly Lynch and Oli Higginson are full of charisma and are truly exceptional as the ill-fated couple. Higginson is energetic and intense as Jamie, excelling in his punchier numbers (Shiksa

Goddess and Moving Too Fast being particularly memorable), and when moving from aspiring storyteller in the big city who can hardly believe his luck to the unbearably swaggering, arrogant acclaimed novelist – his book reading being particularly cringe-worthy.

Lynch draws out Cathy’s utterly endearing, self-deprecating humour and increasing uncertainty with impeccable comic timing and pitch perfect vocals, with A Summer in Ohio being an absolute highlight.

Goodbye Until Tomorrow/I Could Never Rescue You is quietly heartbreaking. Surrounded by the debris of their relationship, Jamie seems almost genuinely remorseful for his part in the collapse of their marriage while Cathy is back at the beginning, full of excitement and giddy promise of what is to come for them but, as the audience knows all too well, she is grasping for something that’s already broken. It is bittersweet and honest and well worth beg, borrowing or stealing a ticket for before its return run ends.

Bruce Nauman Reopens the Tate Modern

Tate Modern has reopened with a Bruce Nauman retrospective of his work going back more than 50 years, writes Michael Holland...

Artwork that uses the medium of sculpture, sound, film, video and neon, as well as Nauman himself who does not mind being part of the art and the message.

Making your way through the huge pieces in the exhibition creates a feeling of smallness in the viewer; with the overwhelming flashing, blinking lights all around you, huge, cold steel creations, and a cacophony of screeching clowns and screaming heads adding to the incessant buzz of neon signs, you can feel quite insignificant. You walk among the exhibits above and below you. There are screens on the floor, tilted projections, heads on wires You almost look forward to reaching the exit to escape the madness, while feeling as helpless as the mouse in Nauman’s Mapping The Studio video.

My favourite artwork was ‘Going Round the Corner Piece with Live and Taped Monitors’ (1970). It makes you a participant of the work as well as a viewer. You are immediately intrigued by the blank screen at the corner, which provokes you into

turning that corner where you find another screen that is showing you turning the corner. Having worked out the delayed sequence of events, it is interesting to watch others go through the same confusing process.

Bruce Nauman blends laughter and sadness, and joy and pain in his clown films, but the fun is minimal in this show while angst and anguish is the cloud that darkens the exhibition. His neon installation of the children’s game of hangman takes the innocence of words a step further and highlights the reality and indignity of dying. His clown getting soaked by the bowl of water above the door feels like bullying when shown on repeat. Saying that, there is humour, but it is fleeting.

Laugh and you miss it.

You don’t leave the Nauman exhibition feeling refreshed and invigorated, but you do leave knowing you have experienced something amazing by someone who inspired many artists who came after.

And not a brushstroke in sight.

Armchair take off for the moon On the 16th March 2020 theatres across london closed because the Covid-19 pandemic had swept through the capital and the government advised that all non essential travel should be ceased and visits to theatres should not go ahead, writes Christopher Peacock...

Seven months down the road and a picture of the London theatre scene postCovid is still unclear. We have all needed to change and adapt our lives in these times.

Certainly up to the task of adapting are Original Theatre Company who since lockdown have produced two multicamera live-streamed shows, and three made for online productions of which Torben Betts’ Apollo 13: Dark Side of The Moon is their latest.

Before watching the show I was also able to see a short behind the scenes documentary they have put together, which explains some of the technical issues of filming in a Covid-safe environment. So my expectations were set for watching theatre in my living room, on my laptop with headphones on.

The show tells the story of the 1970 Apollo mission. The action, however, flicks between in-flight 1970 and a modern day interview with Messrs Haise and Lovell

(two astronauts on that mission). As things start to go wrong and the mission turns from landing on the Moon to going around the dark side to slingshot back to Earth, tensions in the capsule rise, notably between Haise (Michael Salami) and Swigart (the third crew member,

played by Tom Chambers). Although based on the mission, Betts’ play has Haise being a black African-American and talk of being black in 1970 America becomes the focus of the conversation. It might be worth noting that Guion Bluford was actually the first African-American to

go to space in 1983, some thirteen years after the Apollo 13 mission.

The documentary had them selling themselves short in terms of production value, as they say they want a more actorfocused product. That might be fair, as comparisons otherwise would always be

drawn to the Academy Award-winning film starring Tom Hanks. Movement director Simon Pittman was tasked with drawing weightless performances from the three actors “on board” which along with some green screen and good editing really do help the production take off. The sound editing is brilliant and the advice to wear headphones certainly helps keep your focus on the production rather than whether you should’ve run the hoover around the living room, or whether that is actually the washing machine that's bleeping away out there.

With no live performance it’s hard to sell it as theatre. Buying a ticket, which gives you unlimited access to the online film valid up to a certain date is more Amazon Prime than dress circle, but if this way of consuming theatre can help make productions viable in a Covid-safe environment, then the fine work gone into the production should be praised.

With uncertainty about the future of theatre companies, regional theatres, and even the larger west end productions, it’s great to see creativity and performance flourish.

WORKS IN PECKHAM RYE COMMON Southwark Council has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for consent under Greater London Parks and Open Spaces Order 1967: Article 12 to carry out restricted works on Peckham Rye Common. The Planning Inspectorate will decide the application on behalf of the Secretary of State.

The Scheme is aimed at environmental improvement and flood prevention. There are four main elements to the scheme. Firstly, the implementation of below surface drains to improve everyday drainage of the common, making it more usable. Secondly, a grassed bund designed to hold excess surface water during a storm event to prevent large volumes of storm water entering the sewer network and causing flooding.

Thirdly, the strip of derelict land on East Dulwich Road – commonly known as the “Donkey Ride” will be re-developed under the council's cleaner, greener and safer initiative. Finally, the area just north of East Dulwich Road known as the 'Northern Triangle' will be re-landscaped with new planting to increase accessibility and connection with the rest of the Common, while using seasonal planting to celebrate the Lost River Peck.

Of these, only the flood alleviation bunds are subject to consent under Article 12. The northern bund which has a slope of 1:3 at the steepest point will have some, albeit minimal, impact on the common access; however, this will be mitigated by providing a DDA compliant access around the bund, with a slope of 1:25. Moreover, a slope of 1:3 is very gentle and therefore the impact on visibility will be minimal. The southern bund also has a gentle slope of 1:3 and is sited to minimise impact on visibility and accessibility. Proposed works in the 'Northern Triangle' and 'Donkey Ride' will have a positive environmental impact on the common.

The proposed works are approximately 6000m2 in total, with about 600m of temporary fencing surrounding the site during construction phase to keep common users safe. The rest of Peckham Rye Common and the Park will be accessible during the works. The site area can be seen in the attached map.

sport@southwarknews.co.uk THE FIRST eighteen players confirmed to take part in The Hundred have been revealed – with Oval Invincibles announcing Sam Curran and Fran Wilson will remain with the team, while Rory Burns has been signed from rivals London Spirit.

England Men’s all-rounder Curran and England Women’s all-rounder Wilson have been retained from the Oval Invincibles’ initial men’s and women’s playing squads respectively.

Burns becomes one of the first players to move The Hundred teams after Oval Invincibles claimed him as a Test Central Contracted selection following Zak Crawley’s move to Lord’s.

The trio join the eighteen-strong list of players, including the likes of England stars Ben Stokes, Amy Jones, Kate Cross and Jos Buttler, who have today been confirmed to play in the first season of cricket’s new and exciting 100-ball competition.

This news marks the start of a threemonth process where, until the end of January, each of the eight teams will be able to retain players from their original men’s squads for the 2021 season. The teams are also able to retain and sign players to complete their women’s squads.

A draft will be held in early 2021 to allocate the remaining players for the men’s squads.

Curran said: “This is a massive opportunity to play in a world-class competition on home soil and to know that I will get to do that at the Kia Oval, where my career has developed, is perfect for me.

“The 100-ball format is going to test the players’ skills and we’ll probably need to come up with some new tactics to handle the different rules but that should only add to the entertainment value.”

Wilson added: “I was very happy to roll over my contract at Oval Invincibles. Before the first year of the competition was due to

“I know a lot of the guys who were picked in the original Invincibles squad, so I’m hoping that over the next few months we can retain as many of them as possible and then we’ll see what happens at the draft which was a lot of fun to watch last year.”

Friday’s announcement confirmed that

ten of England’s men’s Test stars will compete when the competition launches next year. The first eight women’s players have also been unveiled, including a host of England players and two of the West Indies’ star performers.

Most teams have retained the same Test players that were due to play for them this year, before the competition was postponed due to Covid-19, with only England batsmen Ollie Pope and Burns moving teams.

Pope joins Welsh Fire, after he was originally drafted by Southern Brave, and will be joined by Katie George who was retained from the team’s initial squad.

Despite still being beset by vandalism of their facilities – a security chain on the gate cut, graffiti on the clubhouse and vodka bottles strewn on the pitch the latest abhorrent acts – Town’s players did not let it affect them against their rivals.

On the day when Peckham showed their support for the Hope2020 campaign which is dedicated to the memory of Damilola Taylor, the Menace defeated a Stansfeld side that had been

two places above them in the league before kick-off.

Town began with intent, determined to make it as special an occasion on the pitch as off it.

The Peckham front three of Herve Mbongue, Bryan Villalba and Marcus Black linked up well to stretch the Stansfeld defence.

And it was Villalba who gave the hosts a deserved lead as he gained possession just inside the box to fire home in the nineteenth minute.

Peckham refused to get complacent and pressed for a second, Youssef Bouimane shooting just over after Black had set him up.

Phillip’s side doubled their advantage a half an hour in from the penalty spot.

After Mbongue was fouled, Joe Thomas finished coolly from twelve yards.

Mbongue then got in on the act with a goal-of-the-season contender as he cut inside before firing home from 25 yards.

Town wasted little time after the break

making it 4-0. In the 47th minute, Black showed composure to find the back of the net after being put through on goal.

Despite their clear advantage, the hosts were in no mood to squander a clean sheet, and Charlie Egleton was alert to close off the route to goal in the penalty area after a decent Stansfeld move.

Peckham ensured it would be a fivestar performance just after the hour mark, this time Villalba striking home from the penalty spot.

A miserable day got worse for Stansfeld when they were reduced to ten men for ten minutes for dissent, and then missed a penalty of their own as Town goalkeeper George Legg saved.

The final whistle ignited jubilant scenes among Menace supporters after an emotional afternoon in Peckham.

Phillip said: “What a great game. We have taken our training straight onto the football pitch this week. We had a game plan and we executed right down to the final tee. We deserved to win the game.”

Stansfeld immediately took the game to their opponents, who are a step above in the league pyramid in the Southern Combination Premier Division.

The visitors drew first blood when Sam Ryan crossed and Ryan Hassan was at the far post to head home.

It was soon 2-0 as Macey Malyon’s pressure on the home side allowed Hassan to regain possession and his cut-back was fired in by new boy Ross Morley for his first goal for the club.

Alford pulled a goal back with a dubiously-awarded penalty midway through the half.

Despite that setback, Stansfeld continued to pressure their opponents and restored their twogoal lead as Morley finished calmly with a shot into the bottom corner for his second of the game.

Stansfeld should have made it 4-1 when Hassan was sent through clear on goal, but his low shot was saved.

Hassan was causing all sorts of problems and his low cross found Rob Hughes unmarked six yards out, but he lifted his effort over.

Alfold then set up a tense finish when they pulled it back to 3-2 after a swift counter-attack.

But Stans retained their composure and in the dying minutes they made sure of their progress when manof-the-match Morley was sent clear from the halfway line and he showed great composure to complete his hat-trick in only his second game for the club.

Stansfeld will now host AFC Hayes on October 31 in the FA Vase first round, kicking off at 3pm.

The first flashpoint arrived soon after that when Dulwich’s Sanchez Ming went through the back of Will Wood, who needed lengthy treatment before he was able to continue. The home bench weren’t happy with the challenge.

United took a measure of revenge when Pardington was unable to hold Mekki’s shot and Bingham reacted to give his side a 27th-minute lead.

The drama was packed into a ten-minute spell as Goodman, in stretching to attempt to recover a poor pass, couldn’t stop his momentum as Ruben Sammut got to the ball first and was caught. This time the Hamlet’s bench reacted furiously and Goodman received a straight red card.

Former Ebbsfleet striker Danny Mills forced goalkeeper Tom Hadler into a save before the away side got back level when Mills cut the ball back for White to fire home.

Rose’s side should have gone ahead eight minutes after half-time when White raced down the left. He had players inside but got his pass wrong as the ball went behind Deon Moore who attempted to get it under control, but that gave Hadler time to react and the stopper saved well.

The visitors continued to press against their ten-man opponents and just before the hour Tobi AdebayoRowling made a crucial intervention to stop Ming’s cross reaching Mills.

Dulwich’s sloppiness on the ball gave the hosts some hope, and Pardington was tested again as he denied Jack Paxman.

Hadler showed bravery to save at Mills’ feet and then the returning Reise Allassani and Jordan Higgs failed to make good contact when well-placed to threaten the home goal.

The last chance fell to Ebbsfleet, but Bingham couldn’t keep his header down.

Battling Rye make cup exit London FA Sunday Challenge Cup result SE Dons 1-0 Peckham Rye THERE WAS no luck for Peckham Rye last weekend as they were narrowly beaten by SE Dons from the Bromley and Orpington League in the first round of the London FA Sunday Challenge Cup.

It was a scrappy contest with both side battling to gain control of midfield.

The Rye worked hard to protect debut goalkeeper Ola Yuseff, while Femi Orenuga

and Douane West linked well up front.

West saw an effort whistle just past the post as the visitors pressed.

The Dons had a goal disallowed for offside before finally making the breakthrough to go 1-0 up.

Yuseff made a superb save to keep his side in it and Peckham had chances through Orenuga, Joshua Flower and substitute Emmanuel Ade but they couldn’t capitalise.

Joint-manager Tony Stanley said: “It was a great effort from the lads and we are very proud. We need to take that into our league games.”

Quirky captain leads in unique ways When the Lions skipper talks, people listen

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IT’S ONE of the most unique ways a captain leads his team out for the warm-up in the Championship.

Slightly crouched forward, teeth gritted, Alex Pearce strides onto the pitch moving his arms out and up in wide arcs, palms meeting almost behind his head in slow claps, until he has reached the opposite stand.

It has achieved iconic status for Millwall fans. It’s an idiosyncratic routine that he has continued with despite the empty stadiums.

Pearce has those quirks. His teammates were certainly amused when he led them in saluting Millwall fans in a flat behind the Jimmy Seed Stand at Charlton after Millwall won 1-0 there in June.

Whether he starts or not at Wycombe this Saturday, Millwall players will follow their leader onto the pitch and there are always a few smiles when The Clap signals it’s time to prepare.

“So, that was just something that I picked up over time, really,” Pearce explained. “That’s just to get the players going, to get them going with enthusiasm.

“It’s also to clap the fans that we’d

When we go out for the warm-up I want the players’ minds to be focussed. If that can help raise that attention level then that’s good.

“The lads seem to enjoy it as well, which is good. As long as it goes down well enough I’ll keep doing it.

“I think we’ve had a decent enough start, there have been some good performances in there, certainly against Brentford, probably the best we’ve played. We played some really good stuff and deserved to win that game.

“But there’s also been other good results like Rotherham away, we didn’t play as well as we wanted to but got the points.

“Stoke at home is always tricky, first game of the season as well, the performance was okay.

“The only one we weren’t happy about was the Swansea one when we felt as players that we should have done better there.

“Overall we can’t be too displeased with the start we’ve had.”

Millwall’s players were given extra time off last week during the international break. Apart from the next international break in November, they have mid-week fixtures all the way to December 19.

Pearce, 31, knows the importance of getting his mind off football, and there is one particular reason that’s not a problem for him.

“It’s a very intense game, really,” he says. “The way I switch off is I’ve got a little girl and as soon as I go home to her I forget about football. That’s the great thing about kids, when you walk through the door they do take your mind off it straightaway.

“You throw yourself into your family life when you get some time off, get home from training. That helps me switch off from the game.

“That’s important because it’s very demanding. When you do have that time to switch off you have to make sure you do.”

rested, it was intriguing to observe him call in Jed Wallace and the other substitutes who all listened intently to what he was saying. That pep-talk lasted about three minutes and no player budged from their spot.

It’s obvious Pearce commands huge respect.

He adds: “That would just be about switching people’s minds on, helping them focus on the game. If I’m on the substitutes’ bench it’s important to make sure the lads are ready if they need to come on.

“I’d give some feedback, pass a little bit of my experience on to them. It’s all to help people with their game. That’s what we all need to do, we need to help each other as best we can.

“We’re going to need everyone in the squad in this period coming up. Some have played more than others so far but I can assure you everyone’s going to be needed.

“It’s going to be a tough set of fixtures, but everyone is in the same boat in the league. I’m sure every squad is going to be stretched. We’ll be no different.

“People are going to need to be ready when called upon, and no doubt that will happen.”

The Lions should get a boost with the return of striker Troy Parrott from injury next month. Pearce noted the on-loan Tottenham man’s ability despite Parrott’s

limited involvement in pre-season.

The Ireland forward still netted twice in less than 80 minutes of friendly action.

“He’s a very, very good young player, you can see he’s got a bright future in the game,” an impressed Pearce says.

“He’s got very good movement in and around the box. He always seems to find space and once a chance come along for him he seems to finish it off.

“I know he hasn’t played much but certainly when he did play in pre-season he didn’t need many chances to score.

“From what I’ve seen he’s a very intelligent player and one we’ll be glad to welcome back, for sure.”

Parrott arrived on a season-long loan from Spurs and at the time of writing Millwall were still trying to strengthen their squad ahead of the closure of the transfer window at 5pm this Friday (October 16).

Pearce acknowledges the squad could use that boost.

“I’m sure the club are working tirelessly to bring people in, and as a group of players we would welcome one or two new faces in the door.

“We know that we need all the help we can get. If the group was what it is now after the window closes, that would be all right.

“But if the club added to it we’d be more than happy to build from there.”

As boss faces job rival at Adams Park

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IT’S A battle between the current Millwall incumbent and the manager he pipped to the post last October at Adams Park this Saturday.

Gary Rowett, Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth and Lions assistant manager Adam Barrett were all interviewed to pick a successor to Neil Harris.

Rowett impressed most but Ainsworth didn’t exactly sulk after missing out.

In fact, he led Wycombe to one of the most unexpected promotions in English club football history last season as they defeated Oxford 2-1 at Wembley in the League One play-off final. This is their first season in the second tier in their 123-year history.

The Chairboys had finished seventeenth the previous campaign following promotion from League Two in 2017-18.

Millwall aren’t exactly one of the moneybags of the Championship, but it’s doubtful Rowett is out on the Calmost road training pitches with a wheelbarrow.

“I’m not sure many managers know the inner workings of a sprinkler system and can fix it by bending wires and with bits of coat-hanger,” Ainsworth said in an interview in the Guardian recently. “But we do here. We pitch in. I’m often seen with a wheelbarrow out here. We don’t have a full-time groundsman, but we have rabbits.”

Wycombe were certainly a feel-good story during a difficult and depressing 2020, but the Championship is no respecter of fairy-tales.

They’ve been brought back down to earth with a violent bump. Ainsworth’s side are last in the table, with no points from five games and not even a goal to show for their efforts. Their minus-ten goal difference is the worst in the division by a margin of four, with Nottingham

“He’s now had two promotions out of League One so he’s certainly a player that has good qualities. But we’ll have to be on the ball with all their players.

Midfielder’s new role includes loan watch

Williams, who will turn 34 on October 19, also takes some coaching sessions at Calmont Road.

Danny McNamara, who is on a season-long loan at St Johnstone, revealed recently Williams has been in regular contact.

“That’s that part of Willo’s role and also part of the job that he’s very, very good at,” Millwall boss Gary Rowett said. “He’s an experienced player but people won’t see that side of it. He’ll ring the players to make sure they’re okay and see how they’re developing.

“I’ll catch up with Danny at some point but we’ve watched his games and we’ve been monitoring his progress. Willo makes contact with the players to make sure they’re okay and to give them a little bit of

“Danny’s done really well, he’s been one of St Johnstone’s better players.

That’s what you want from a loan period for any young player.

“He played against Celtic recently [in a 2-0 defeat for St Johnstone], it

was just a shame it wasn’t in front of 50,000 fans, which would have been incredible for him. Unfortunately, none of us have got that fan base at the moment.

“But it’s been a good loan for him so far.”

McNamara has been a regular in former Millwall assistant Callum Davidson’s Saints side in the Scottish Premiership.

Despite St Johnstone being bottom of the table, McNamara has impressed with his performances.

Meanwhile, Isaac Olaofe – whose loan at St Johnstone was ended last week before he joined Sutton until January – made a winning start to his second spell with the National League side who defeated Weymouth 1-0 at the Bob Lucas Stadium last Saturday.

Olaofe was booked and played 75 minutes up front before Will Randall’s 81st-minute goal maintained Sutton’s perfect start to the season with three wins from three, level on points with Hartlepool who top the table on goal difference.

Also in the National League, Dover were without the injured Harry Ransom as they lost 3-0 at Stockport.

Defender Ransom pulled up with an injury in the 4-1 defeat at former Lions defender Byron Webster’s Bromley last week.

“It’s going to be a tough game, we’ve found that before against teams who have been promoted. We’ll have to be at the top of our game to get anything from them.

“But I’m sure if we turn up and apply ourselves then we should be able to come away with three points.”

Rowett will again be without Troy Parrott and Billy Mitchell, with the pair not expected to be back from injury until next month.

Cooper is closing in on that milestone of league appearances for Millwall after making his debut on loan from Reading in a 1-1 draw at Bradford on January 21,

2017.

Centre-back Cooper has made 166 appearances for the club and was recently praised by Lions boss Gary Rowett for his professionalism and durability that has seen him be available for selection for every league and cup game since November 18, 2017.

Cooper wasn’t always a regular in the side and it seems strange to recall now that he was kept out of the team by Byron Webster as Millwall won promotion to League One in 2017.

He was picked alongside Shaun

Hutchinson for the first game of the following season at Nottingham Forest but then an injury put him out and Webster kept his place even after he had recovered.

It wasn’t until October that Cooper regained his regular spot in the team after Webster tore his cruciate ligament against Barnsley and was out for the season.

Cooper reflected on where he has improved most since he joined Millwall.

Scott [Malone] likes to go forward and attack and I feel like I can defend those areas behind. Hopefully he can create for us up the pitch and I can help keep the goals out.

“It’s good to be able to adapt to different situations. I feel like I’m able to do that now so happy days.

“I’ve been here almost four years now and it’s gone quickly, the 150 games have come quickly. It’s obviously great to achieve that. I love playing for the club and being with the boys on the pitch. It’s nice to see the numbers going up.”

If Cooper is in the line-up at Adams Park, it will also be his 127th consecutive league start, one behind goalkeeper Tony Warner.

Cooper is currently fourth on the alltime list of consecutive league starts for outfield players for Millwall.

“I don’t think goalkeepers count, do they?!” Cooper jokes. “No, I just want to be out there helping the team out. We haven’t got a huge squad so I want to get myself out there as much as possible.

“I’ll try to keep myself fit and healthy and hopefully keep performing.”

Millwall have seven league games in the next three weeks starting at Wycombe.

The Lions have five points from four games but it should be six after Shaun Hutchinson was denied a clear penalty in injury-time in the 2-1 defeat at Swansea before the international break.

“It’s been an interesting start, we’ve done okay,” Cooper says. “We haven’t really performed to the high standards we expect and that we set ourselves.

There’s definitely plenty more in the tank.

“We’ve had some good results, a couple of clean sheets but it was disappointing at Swansea. They’re in great form, we managed to score against a solid defence but we were disappointed with the goals we let in ourselves.

“I saw the Hutchy incident afterwards and it’s obviously a blatant foul. I don’t know what the referee was thinking, whether he wanted to have a word before the ball was in play, maybe he didn’t know the corner had been taken.

“It was a definite penalty but unfortunately it didn’t go our way.

“Maybe that result is the kick-start that we needed to see what level we want to be at this season. We want to be challenging with these top teams but we’ve got to perform week-in, week-out.

“It was nice to have a week to take in the start of the season and prepare ourselves for this tough run of games coming up now. It’s seven games in a short period of time, so it was important to have a bit of rest and get ready for that.”

Cooper also had his say on fans not being allowed back into stadiums.

“It’s really disappointing,” he said. “The club have worked really hard putting measures in place. It’s just a strange one.

“You see other industries that can go back and have people there and it’s just a shame that we can’t.

“I just hope the fans are dealing with it okay and as soon as they can get back they’ll be there full-force and we can perform for them. We as players can’t wait for that day to happen.”

Rowett ideally wants a midfielder and attacker to bolster his options ahead of a packed schedule that includes midweek games from this weekend – excluding November’s international break – until December 19.

When the News spoke to Rowett on Tuesday he wasn’t fully ruling out Jayson Molumby as an option. The 21-year-old midfielder has yet to play for Brighton in the league this season

The Lions have also been linked with Liverpool forward Liam Millar with Rowett having good contacts at the Premier League champions.

“I’ve been in these transfer windows many times, you can’t expect anything.

attempting to add one or two if we can but it has to be right. We’re not going to go and spend four or five million pounds on a striker at the minute.

Jiri Skalak has been linked with a move away from Millwall after seeing little first-team action in over two seasons. Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett has also revealed his interest in another loan move for Ben Thompson.

a decision based on a conversation with any of those players. Should they desperately, desperately want to play football regularly elsewhere that’s a bit more guaranteed, then of course we’ll always have a look at it.

“What you can’t have is a squad of 25 players and ten of them are unhappy because they’re not anywhere near the first team.

“You’re always trying to balance that as a manager.”

Molumby was named man of the match in Ireland’s 0-0 Nations League draw against Wales last Sunday, and would have plenty of suitors.

Rowett said: “Like any player, until they go out they’re always an option for anyone. I don’t think there’s any imminent plan for that. There’s nothing happening right at this minute.”

Pearce, 31, is out of contract at the end of this season along with the likes of Shaun Williams, who will turn 34 this month.

Millwall have tied players such as Mahlon Romeo, Shaun Hutchinson and Jake Cooper to long-term deals, but the current impasse over when supporters can return and provide match-day revenue makes it more difficult for clubs to plan long-term.

Former Reading centre-back Pearce joined Millwall from Derby initially on loan in January 2019 before the move was made permanent the following summer.

The ex-Ireland international has made 50 appearances for the Lions and is hugely popular among players and staff.

But he knows he is fighting for his future with Millwall.

“Definitely, yeah, there are a few of us in that boat in the dressing room,” Pearce said. “It’s up to us to do as well as we can when we get the chance to play, be ready when we’re picked.

“Everyone has to do their bit and the contract situation will always take care of itself, that’s what I’ve found down the years.

“As a player you should just worry about what’s going on on the pitch and on the training ground every day. Then the rest will fall into place.”
