katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Twenty COVID-19 cases were recorded in Southwark on Tuesday, amid widespread confusion over the true number of people testing positive - after thousands of new cases were missed due to a ‘spreadsheet error’.

Last week, Public Health England admitted a dodgy Microsoft spreadsheet that failed to update properly was behind nearly 16,000 positive COVID-19 test results being left off official figures – and contact tracers’ books for over the period September 25 to October 2.

Shockingly, 31 of 32 London boroughs have seen their rate of infection rise in the same period - with Southwark’s rate climbing from 45.2 to 53.9.

According to the figures published on Tuesday, October 6, a total of 2,181 people have tested positive for the Coronavirus in Southwark since the beginning of the pandemic.

Daily new cases in the borough, which had dipped to single figures, spiked at 20 on September 29, with a seven-day average of 26.3. Southwark Council says cases are still rapidly rising across London and hospital admissions and deaths are also increasing.

The latest hospital admission statistics show 27 people were admitted to London hospitals on October 4.

Although admissions are creeping up again, they are nowhere near the peak of the crisis on March 30 - when 883 people were hospitalised in a single day in London alone.

In the capital over 220 deaths were being recorded a day at the height of the pandemic.

This figure dropped to zero or low single digits throughout lockdown and the early stages of reopening, but has risen since late September.

Seven people died on September 30 in London. The rolling seven-day average for deaths at the end of last month and early October is hovering at around three – a figure expected to rise as more are hospitalised.

Top cop vows to clamp down on violent crime after spate

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark’s top cop has moved to reassure residents that officers are tackling violent crime, after a spate of stabbings in recent weeks.

Ch Supt Colin Wingrove, Borough Commander for Southwark and Lambeth, told the News tackling violent crime was his top priority, with officers working roundthe-clock to clamp down on ‘high harm’ offences.

A ‘violence suppression unit’ in Southwark and Lambeth made fourteen arrests and a number of charges in the week Ch Supt Wingrove spoke to the News.

This is a typical number for officers, in the unit, he said.

However, while seeking to reassure residents that tackling violent crime remained a top concern, Commander Wingrove said it was actually down from last year in certain categories.

“If you look at violent crime, knife crime with injuries for under 25s, we’re a third down from last year,” he said. “[But] we’re out there every single day and every single night - we have got extra resources in the borough and we’re taking

The SE1 postcode is a particular flashpoint, he said: “One of our long-term hot spots is SE1 and that top half of Southwark borough, particularly around robbery offences.”

Asked whether the drugs trade spurs on violent crime in Southwark, he said: “That’s part of it without a doubt.

cannabis or whatever, at some point in that transaction, people are taking risks, people are committing crime. That dynamic leads to violent crime.”

On policing breaches of the coronavirus legislation, Commander Wingrove said little had changed operationally for officers, despite ever-changing advice and laws from the government.

“Our approach remains the same,” he said.

“Most people when they receive advice, they comply."

Would he, as some in government have said, tell on a neighbour who has had more than six people over to their home?

Not being drawn on whether he personally would ‘shop’ a neighbour, Commander Wingrove said: “If the public see serious breaches, report those serious breaches to us.”

Over the summer, those serious breaches included illegal raves and parties, particularly around Burgess Park.

As the nights draw in and the weather gets colder, this now seems to have become less of an issue, and he says there has not been a resurgence since an injunction was granted.

“Not since that has happened,” he said.

“The messaging has got out.”

“I would really want to reassure [residents] that violent crime is our number one priority,” he said. “Our officers work really hard... and they’re helped by other officers across London so that we are able to take high-harm offenders off the streets.”

“We want to have more community engagement and more working with organisations to be more responsive to things. We want to police by consent.”

Samantha Doe runs the Southwark Park chapter of Rabble, a team games-based fitness class with a social twist, Tell us about the Rabble ethos why team games?

At the heart of it, Rabble is about making fitness really fun. It can be a bit intimidating turning up to a gym and not knowing how the equipment works, or feeling out of place. It can also feel like not an easy place to meet people. Rabble addresses all those points. It’s really accessible because it’s silly, fun fitness based on games you played in the playground. We level the playing field and play lots of fun concept games inspired by TV programmes too, so you forget that you’re exercising! It’s set up to make you concentrate on working with other people in teams, having a laugh and mucking around so that you forget you're running, or doing squat jumps or burpees.

How did you first discover Rabble?

I remember my first session really fondly. I was quite new to London when I saw Rabble featured in Time Out and thought it sounded brilliant, and decided to take it on as a New Year’s resolution. I went up to a session in north London on a Saturday morning and the heavens opened - I thought, oh my god, what have I signed up for?! But I had the best time running around for an hour, slipping and sliding in the mud. I made so many friends and was welcomed straight away. I’ve never experienced anything like it. I try to instill that in all my own sessions now.

Can you really get fit playing classics like British Bulldog and Capture the Flag?

Absolutely! It’s quite easy to clock up running 5k during a session without you realising - we do lots of building up your heart rate. But it’s about strength building, too, so there’ll be

celebratory star jumps, burpees or sit ups when you score points. I’ve seen firsthand how players get so much quicker, and so much fitter thanks to sessions. There’s a marked difference.

What’s a typical session like?

A newbie can expect to be greeted by a friendly face and introduced to a few of the regular players. We’ll walk through a warm up to get heart rates up and brains working, then we’ll play a name game - one of the integral parts of Rabble is getting to know people.

We then normally play a ball game or an activity that uses equipment like a vorex, frisbee, a yoga ball or a dodge ball, and then we’ll run a contrast competition where you try to beat the other team by scoring the most points. We’ll end with something more intensive - a final blast that might be core based, strength building or a

sprint finish. But most importantly it's about having fun, and ending on a post-exercise endorphin high. We have a cool down and either head to the pub or have a picnic in the park.

The cafe in Southwark Park does incredible ice cream so we’re really happy it’s reopened!

Tell us about the crowd that comes along to sessions in Southwark Park.

We get loads of regulars. People feel so welcome that they come back again and again; it’s a really nice way to start your weekend. We have loads of social activities too. During lockdown we pivoted everything to virtual events so that everyone could be included, no matter where they were. We ran a virtual book club, quizzes and taskmaster daily challenges - there’s always something going on! We get

together for drinks and board games nights too. It’s got to the point where the community has grown so much that there’s always someone else up for a challenge like Tough Mudder, or an adventure. You just post in the Facebook group and someone will want to join you.

What would you say to someone thinking about giving Rabble a go?

I was there myself once - I remember the feeling well! It can be daunting and scary turning up to something new, but you will absolutely be made to feel welcome and you’ll have a brilliant, brilliant time. Just do it!

Boiling HOT TEA thrown at mum

The ‘random attack’ took place as the Dulwich mother was on the school run

Two women had scalding hot liquid thrown over them by an unknown assailant outside a Dulwich Village school – but a month later no one has been arrested.

Staff from Dulwich Prep Early Years rushed to the first victim’s aid after she was doused with hot tea at around 11.30am on September 7 while in Gallery Road. At the time she was with her young son, who was fortunately unharmed.

She told the News she believes the female attacker, who has not yet been identified or arrested, lives locally and has even been seen in the vicinity – near several schools - in the last few days.

The victim has now shared her story to warn others to be vigilant in the Dulwich Village area after the seemingly random attack, and praised school staff for calling 999 so quickly and giving first aid.

Describing her attacker, she said: “She intentionally chucked her entire flask filled with boiling hot green tea on me, leaving me with a nasty burn.

“When I stopped her to ask her why she did that she just pushed me away and started screaming ‘leaving me f***ing alone'.

“She then chucked the rest of the tea on another lady coming out of the school.”

The incident could have been much worse. No children were hurt in the incident, and the second woman narrowly avoided injury thanks to

shielding her skin.

The victim has shared a photograph of her alleged attacker with police - which the News is unable to publish for legal reasons.

Southwark neighbourhood inspector Tom Cornish confirmed no arrests had been made yet, and urged witnesses or anyone with information to come forward - describing the investigation as 'ongoing'.

“One woman suffered minor burns to her arm while the other was uninjured as the liquid hit her clothing only, and appears to have been hot tea,” he told the News.

“First Aid was given at the scene and no further medical aid was required.

“The suspect – a woman – left on foot.

"Police officers responded quickly to the incident, allegations of assault were recorded and the investigation continues.”

picturehouses take commercial break

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Dulwich’s Picturehouse cinema is to close temporarily, along with Brixton’s Ritzy, in just the latest string of closures in Southwark and nearby.

The chain of Picturehouse cinemas will close temporarily today, October 8, with no confirmed date for reopening.

It comes just days after the temporary closure of the Peckhamplex, an independent cinema, because cinemagoers were being kept away by a lack of big releases.

MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, Helen Hayes, slammed a lack of consultation with cinema staff, who allegedly learned of the decision to close Cineworld and Picturehouse cinemas when it leaked in the Sunday Times.

“I am very concerned that staff did not learn of this decision, which will have profound consequences for them, directly from Cineworld,” she said in a letter to its CEO, Mooky Greidinger.

“I am further concerned that your letter to staff did not include any information at all about how the closure will affect staff employment, or any redundancy process.”

Around 100 members of staff are expected to be affected including cleaners on outsourced contracts, according to the MP. This is across three cinemas, Brixton's Ritzy, and the Picturehouse cinemas in Dulwich and West Norwood.

Hayes demanded urgent clarification on staff employment during the closure, adding that she expected the cinema chain to work to minimise income and job losses.

Mr Greidinger, CEO of Cineworld, which owns Picturehouse, said this

week: “This is not a decision we made lightly, and we did everything in our power to support safe and sustainable reopenings in all of our markets.”

The government has come under fire from those within the cinema industry, some of whom accuse it of not providing enough financial support to keep venues afloat.

This week, it announced that 42 independent cinemas had been awarded £650,000 of a £30m fund for indy film venues.

This works out on average to £15,476 per cinema. One independent cinema in Southwark has received the funding at the time of writing: Bermondsey Square’s Kino received £8,469.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden hailed the funding as helping dozens of independent cinemas around the country, “preserving their unique character and history for future generations.”

Extra patrols after youth menace in Canada Water

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Police have pledged extra patrols in Canada Water after a string of antisocial behaviour, including youths throwing fireworks in public.

Fed-up residents and businesses surrounding the plaza have raised the alarm with cops, following a string of incidents last week.

Officers put a dispersal order in place at the weekend, but residents alleged they were reluctant to arrest the perpetrators, because they are minors.

Footage taken by residents show youths on bikes throwing fireworks at each other in broad daylight.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, told this paper: “It’s been going on for ages. It was low-level stuff, but now it’s getting scary.

“They’re discharging fireworks at the library, into businesses and at members of the public. It’s kind of like, what was the bloody point of putting it in place [the dispersal order] if you’re not willing to enforce it?

“It’s only a matter of time before one of these fireworks seriously injures someone.”

Paul Graham, owner of Ledbelly’s bar, which is on the square, said staff and customers were being continuously harassed by a group of youngsters, with the bar calling police several times last week.

“It’s been brewing for a long time, the past six months really,” he said, speaking after a meeting with police at the bar on Monday.

“The kids are quite menacing, they’ve been chucking things at buses and you can imagine what happens if they swerve.

“If you were heading to Ledbelly’s and you saw a firework fly past, you wouldn’t think, ‘I want to go there.’

“There was a dispersal notice over the weekend but the police said if they arrest them because they’re only fourteen, sixteen, they let them go. It’s a complete waste of time.”

Another concern is the portable gas canisters used by food trucks on the plaza. “One of the food vans usually parked on the Plaza has packed up and left because of the amount of crime,” said one resident.

“He has gas canisters on site and with fireworks being thrown at members of the public, the risk of losing his livelihood was simply too high.”

A nearby development, Maple Quays, has private security which has gone some way to deterring acts of antisocial behaviour, but residents say that can’t be enough.

“They’re limited by what they can do,” said Mr Graham.

Inspector Tom Cornish, of Southwark Police, said officers intended to step up patrols to deter the youths.

“Police have received reports from residents and businesses about recent anti-social behaviour in the Canada Water area,” he said.

“We are developing key information about the individuals involved and working closely with Southwark Council to remedy the situation.

“We also intend to target the area with extra police resources both overt and in plain clothes.”

Two charged after ‘County Lines’ dawn raid at flat in Rotherhithe

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Two people have been charged with modern slavery and class A drug offences after a dawn raid on a flat in Surrey Quays.

British Transport Police have linked the raid to the arrest of a thirteen-yearold boy in Rochester, who has been taken into police protection after being discovered with £1,500 of cash, several mobiles, and “markings of exploitation

by County Lines gangs.”

Police entered the flat at around 6am last Friday where they arrested the man and woman and seized money, drugs and weapons.

Measures were taken to protect a third person who owned the flat as officers say they suspect he was also a

victim of exploitation.

“Sadly, it’s not uncommon for County Lines gangs to use children, especially when they’re using them to transport drugs on the railway. In our work, we routinely come across children who are 15, 16 and 17-years-old,” Detective Superintendent Gareth Williams said.

“These gangs often use extreme intimidation and exploitative tactics, such as money and new clothes, to encourage these children to travel far distances to areas they don’t know with class A drugs, where they’ll be alone and at a high risk of harm."

In the days before the raid, Kent Police secured the conviction of two people who were linked to County Lines in Kent and who police suspect to have a connection to the Rotherhithe flat.

London is named as the worst for people returning to high street

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark assembly member and MP for Vauxhall, Florence Eshalomi, has called for a ‘community-wide effort’ from residents to save our high streets in the run up to Christmas.

London has been named the worstperforming region, in terms of people returning to high-street shops, by Centre for Cities.

According to a survey conducted by Simply Business, small businesses had, on average, lost over £17,000 in only the first three months of lockdown.

The chancellor has now announced a ‘winter economy plan’ with a new job support scheme and bounce-back loan extensions, and Sadiq Khan has launched a one million fund to help the most at risk businesses. But many traders still face an uncertain future - especially in the event of further lockdowns.

Eshalomi said: “It is only right that restrictions are being tightened at a time when COVID-19 cases are beginning to rise at a concerning rate.

“At the same time, we can’t forget that this could deal another significant blow for small businesses in our borough. The impact has been huge so far.

“As we stay closer to home, a community-wide effort is needed to give our struggling local high streets and town centres the boost they need to get through the winter.

“For those unable to get to the shops at the moment, this can also be done remotely through City Hall’s ‘Pay it Forward’ crowdfunding scheme”.

On average, small and medium sized businesses in London lost out on £17,074 in lost work, earnings, and loan repayments - £5,000 more than the national average, and nearly £2,000 more than businesses in Scotland, the next closest region; likely due to loss in footfall as workers desert central London offices.

The projections will transform the structures associated with the worst stereotypes of urban decay into surfaces for the communication of a positive story of the diverse and complex lives that have existed behind the grey bleak facades.

Richard Ansett says: “It is a transformative event redefining a landscape only associated by outsiders with poverty, depravation and decay.

“These portraits are meant as a celebration of the life and community of the estate as it comes to its inevitable end. The images have developed from an exploration of community in the place that might feel like the last place to look.

The project recognises the unwarranted reputation that has over-shadowed the amazing lives of generations who have made this place their home.

“The Aylesbury is in an irreversible state of decline that can only be met with its destruction in preparation for new homes. These images transcend the politics and are a celebratory document of the estate’s last residents in an attempt to re-frame some of the narratives and dispel the mythologies

Flintoff visitS Maudsley for eating disorder documentary

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Freddie Flintoff visited the Maudsley Hospital’s renowned eating disorder service while filming his new BBC One documentary, where he opens up about his own 20-year struggle with the illness.

In Freddie Flintoff: Living with Bulimia, the former England cricketer and Top Gear presenter shares how he had suffered from bulimia for two decades without treatment.

First broadcast September 28 and now available on iPlayer, in the documentary Flintoff looks at how eating disorders are often mistakenly assumed to only affect women, its causes, and its impact on his own life.

Flintoff says being criticised for gaining weight while playing for England had led to him making himself sick after eating, constantly worrying about his weight, and being unable to let-up a gruelling exercise regime for fear of putting weight on.

In the documentary, he discusses his conflicting feelings - knowing what he was doing ‘wasn’t right’ or healthy, but gaining positive feedback as he lost weight.

“Everyone was happy with me.

My weight was coming down,” he explains, discussing when he first started making himself sick. ‘It was like, ‘I’m bossing this.’ It just carried on and I was doing it all the time."

While visiting the Maudsley, he meets 33-year-old Jamie, who has been receiving treatment and support from the hospital's specialists for nearly a year; including from senior counselling psychologist Dr Omara Naseem.

Flintoff says it was the first time he had ever met another bulimic or spoken to a doctor about it.

Maudsley patient Jamie tells him: “About fifteen, sixteen I kind of went from not giving any care at all to how I looked or how heavy I was to: 'I need to do something about this’. That snowballed into quite a restrictive diet and the weight just fell off, completely.”

He adds that he was pleased at first and felt a sense of achievement as he gained more compliments - but soon he was only eating one meal and still feeling guilty.

“There’s an extra bit of shame on top of it,” he says of being a man with an eating disorder. "That’s probably why I waited until I was 32 before actually doing something about it.”

Alongside Jamie’s story, Flintoff also meets the mother and brother of Belfast man who died of heart failure at just 24-years-old after suffering from bulimia for years.

Pam and Chris Nugent have now set up a foundation, in memory of Laurence, to help break the stigma of men with eating disorders and encourage more people to seek specialist help.

Around 1.5 million people are estimated to suffer from an eating disorder in the UK - around a quarter of whom are men.

Speaking about the documentary, the Maudsley’s Dr Naseem said: “Research shows there is a link in how men feel about their bodies and their psychological wellbeing.

“We know men in particular face difficulties in talking about emotional difficulties and seeking help.

“Eating disorders do not discriminate and affect all regardless of gender, race, class or creed.

“This documentary highlights how important it is for men to get help and that recovery is possible.

“I would like to thank the patients featured for bravely speaking about their experiences and Freddie for sharing his story.”

Veronica Asenso Afriyie said the idea behind the network had been ‘lingering’ for over a year but COVID-19 was the ‘spark’ that finally saw her put it into action.

STUDIO 27° is a growing community of people from backgrounds traditionally under-represented in the

creative industries.

She says her aims for the platform are to help tackle racial and gender inequalities, and for freelancers and small businesses to support each other and share tools and learning resources.

It is also a way for beneficiaries or booking agents to find artists to commission, and provide support during the continued impact of COVID-19 on creative sectors.

“My experience working as a freelancer has been a bumpy ride and the pandemic was merely a grave reminder that things needed to change drastically,” she told the News.

“My desire to feel a sense of belonging

during this uncertain time made me realise that creatives need each other more than ever before.”

The platform is already used by artists all over the world with people signing up in the UK, Netherlands, New York, Oslo & Bergen in Norway, Italy, France, Belgium, Romania and India.

Veronica is part of the Crowdfund for Change programme from Business Launchpad UK and Crowdfund 360.

Her crowdfunder launched on Tuesday, October 6, to help develop the platform further and support its running costs.

Ardic began sexually touching her under her clothing, before she fought him off and got out of the car, leaving her purse behind.

The day after, he drove the car around Stoke Newington, where he picked up a woman in her twenties who thought he was her cab driver.

The second victim also fell asleep. Ardic pulled up in a secluded road in Islington, and again sexually assaulted her. She pushed and kicked him off and managed to escape.

The two victims reported the sexual assaults, but couldn’t provide specific details of the car or driver.

Ardic had rented the car on fake details from a company in France. Police analysed the information used to rent the vehicle and also found that he had used a bank card left inside the car by the first victim.

He was identified and arrested in January 2018, and gave a no comment interview. After months of work, a suite of evidence against Ardic – including forensics, CCTV footage and GPS data – cops brought a case against Ardic.

Charges for two sexual assaults, fraud and theft were authorised by the Crown Prosecution in September last year. A charge for disqualified driving had been authorised beforehand.

“Today’s sentencing reflects the seriousness of Ardic’s offending,” said PC Jonny Harris on the day of sentencing.

“There were a number of aggravating factors considered in this sentencing, despite Ardic’s guilty plea.

“The most prominent being the abuse of trust and the planning of these horrible assaults.

His victim, a woman in her 20s, told police she was on the 133 heading toward Streatham at 11.20-11.30pm on July 1 when the incident happened.

Officers say she noticed a man sitting on the lower deck - in the first seat after the centre doors - ‘constantly turning round in his seat’, before realising he was exposing himself.

The Met is now appealing for help identifying the man, and say the person pictured, from CCTV footage, could help with their enquiries.

Atila Ardic, 25, had confessed to two sexual assaults on women – one in Waterloo and one in Islington – in July.

Last week Ardic, of Brownswood Road, Hackney, was jailed for 30 months at Wood Green Crown Court for the sickening crimes.

On December 7, Ardic fraudulently rented a car, despite being banned from driving.

The next day, he drove around Islington in the early hours looking for drunk, vulnerable women to sexually assault, the court heard.

He picked up a woman in her early thirties on Upper Street by telling her he was her private hire driver.

Historian to screen short film on a mixed-race Victorian officer, in bid to keep more black police

A mixed-race Victorian police officer is the inspiration behind a new short film recorded at New Scotland Yard by Southwark-based historian Stephen Bourne.

Robert Branford (1817-1869), rose through the ranks to become a wellrespected Superintendent in 1856.

The video, which tells his life story and examines his career in the early days of the force, has been made in honour of Black History Month and will be shown to all Met officers and staff.

During his research into Superintendent Branford’s life, Stephen located his grave in a Sussex village Little Waldingfield – where he moved after retiring in 1866.

In 2017 Stephen visited the village to attend a Met memorial service for the officer.

The project is of special significance given Stephen’s other role as an independent police adviser.

He is currently deputy chair of Southwark’s independent advisory group and is believed to be the longestserving independent adviser in London.

These bodies were created in 1999 in every London borough in response to the recommendations of the McPherson report after the murder of Stephen Lawrence.

He told the News that now, more than ever, it is not just about continuing efforts to recruit more black officers and those from other underrepresented backgrounds, but also about retention.

As reported last week, Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman had

criticised the Met for being unable to share an exact breakdown of the number of black officers, by rank, in each borough.

Southwark’s top cop, Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove, said as soon as that information was available he would share it with the MP and public.

Stephen said: “The recruitment of black officers has improved in recent years, but keeping them in post is a problem for the Met. “The Met has an ‘exit interview in which officers who leave the service are given an opportunity to explain their reasons.

“In response to Harriet Harman’s concerns about how many black officers we have in Southwark, I would suggest that she asks the Met to look closely at what officers are saying in their exit interviews.

“In the Southwark community we want to keep our officers, not lose them.

“We need to welcome new recruits and make them feel they are part of the Southwark family.

“The Met should have us on their side with this, and those of us who work with them are always willing to assist.

“I hope I am helping in a small way by drawing attention to historical figures like Superintendent Branford who did not allow the racist attitudes of the Victorian era to prevent him from rising through the ranks in Southwark.”

A fundraiser, through the Mayor of London’s ‘pay it forward’ scheme, aims to raise £20,000 by the end of next week to ‘COVID-proof’ their business.

Donations will help extend and improve the kitchen area so it has more space for staff, buy outdoor heaters, replace outdoor furniture, and look at putting in screens between tables for customer safety.

The funds will also help pay for a solicitor to help negotiate with their landlord after being given advanced notice of a ‘rent review’ in January 2021 – and no rent break even when closed during the mandated lockdown.

Explaining on their fundraising page, the pub’s managers Jen Aries, Matt Green-Armytage and Hector Skinner, explain: “We have been charged full rent throughout the whole of Lockdown, even during total closure, and our landlord has indicated a further increase in rent early next year. A fair rent will be crucial to the survival of The Crooked Well.”

Rest In Peace: doorkins was truly magnificat

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Doorkins Magnificat, the Southwark Cathedral cat, has died.

The Cathedral announced that she had sadly passed away on Wednesday, in the arms of one of the Cathedral’s vergers.

She had been living with him since retirement at the end of last year.

Doorkins, who first came to the Cathedral as a stray in 2008, had earned widespread affection from those who visited the church.

Her likeness is engraved in a stone corbel jutting out from one of the Cathedral’s walls, and a picture book about her adventures was published in 2017.

Church-goers had even written poems in praise of Doorkins, who church staff remember as an “active and fearless” cat.

“The community at Southwark Cathedral is saddened by the death of Doorkins,” said the Dean of Southwark, Andrew Nunn.

“Like many people before her she found her way to us and was welcomed and made us her family and this place

her home.

“She brought us so much pleasure and much joy to her many fans and followers.”

The verger who cared for Doorkins in her retirement added: “In the past couple of weeks her health declined rapidly and during the night of the 30th of September her health very suddenly and quickly deteriorated.

“She died in my arms to the sound of a familiar voice peacefully at 8.20pm. I miss her more than words can say such was the impact she had on me and all

who loved her so dearly.”

Her remains will be brought back to the church in due course, and a thanksgiving ceremony will be held on October 28.

Doorkins, who lived in the cathedral for over a decade, had first began visiting between Christmas and New Year in 2008, waiting at the South West doors for food.

Eventually, she decided to move in, and lived in the cathedral until 2019 when her eyesight failed and she was taken home by one of the vergers.

Southwark’s council leader has accused the government of ‘gameplaying’ TfL’s finances after it was revealed the transport authority would not be seeking funding for the Bakerloo Line extension.

Last week TfL had said it would not be “realistic” to expect the government to fund the extension in the upcoming Comprehensive Spending Review.

A TfL spokesman insisted to the News that the extension was not “on hold”, despite the authority not asking for funding to proceed with the project in the review.

It would see the tube line extended from Elephant and Castle into Lewisham, via the Old Kent Road.

In a statement, the leaders of Southwark and Lewisham councils, both of which have heavily backed plans to extend the line, said they were “disappointed” that the extension would not be funded imminently.

“It is disappointing that government game-playing with TfL’s finances means that they are unable to request funding for their largest projects – including the Bakerloo Line Extension – at this time,” said Cllr Kieron Williams of Southwark, and Mayor Damien Egan of Lewisham.

“We remain fully committed to the Bakerloo Line Extension and will do everything in our power, working together with Sadiq Khan, to deliver what will be an essential piece of infrastructure for London’s recovery from COVID-19.

“It is vital that [the] government works with TfL to agree a longer term funding package so that the thousands of new homes and jobs which the project is set to bring are not put at risk.”

The extension forms a key part of Southwark’s new homes and jobs plans, with 20,000 new homes planned for the area surrounding the Old Kent Road.

Council bosses admit that only around 9,000 of those homes could be built if there were no tube stations on the Old Kent Road.

A TfL spokesman said the “immediate priority” had now shifted to protecting the route from development, so that the extension can go ahead at a later date.

“Regarding the Bakerloo line Extension, our immediate priority is safeguarding the route from Elephant and Castle to Lewisham in order to protect the route from future development,” he said.

TfL has also provided “reassurances” to Southwark and Lewisham that the extension remains “an ongoing priority for them,” said Cllr Williams.

Teen caught with ‘Rambo knife’

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A teenage boy was caught carrying a ‘Rambo knife’ in the back of a Lordship Lane taxi last week.

Officers checked the stationary vehicle at 12.30am on Thursday, October 1, after saying four teenage boys inside were ‘acting suspiciously’.

The knife was found inside the pocket of a fifteen-year-old who was stopped and searched after he was seen fidgeting with his waistband.

He has now been arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and, in a more thorough search in custody, found with a small bag of class B drugs and

further arrested.

The boy has now been released under investigation. The other three boys were not arrested.

Superintendent Kris Wright of Central South Command Unit said: “The knife seized in the early hours of this morning by emergency response patrol officers is potentially another violent incident prevented and this shows the value of stop and search.

“Tackling violence is the Met’s top priority and we will continue to take knives and drugs off of our streets.

“We are working in partnership with the Youth Offending Service to ensure that the right support and intervention is in place to reduce offending.”

One of the worst things about it is that it has left the community divided.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Thirteen traders in SE22’s Melbourne Grove are pleading with Southwark Council to reconsider the road closure they say could finish off their businesses and leave East Dulwich a ‘ghost town’.

Lianne Ludlow, the owner of Fashion Conscious, said she and many other businesses were not against reducing traffic and improving access for cyclists and pedestrians - but were shocked at how the scheme had been implemented and its timing.

She maintains the first she heard about Melbourne Grove being blocked off to traffic was when a letter, dated August 28, arrived at her shop days before the planters (pictured above) were installed in early September.

“We had no notice prior to it happening and have since discovered that residents’ opinions were being gathered, meetings had taken place, door-knocking and flyers but none of us had been involved,”she said.

Lianne added that the lack of notice had left her and other traders faced with further loss of income just as they hoped to be getting back on an even footing and gearing up for a busy Christmas - when many companies make a significant proportion of their annual profits.

“To just put in planters and expect people’s behaviour to change without putting alternatives in place first is not positive change,” she argued.

“With things like the ULEZ we are going in the right direction with bringing air pollution down, but we need more bus routes, trams and cycling routes.

“We are asking why this has been done here, now, and how they are measuring its success. We still do not have this baseline data.

“The low emission neighbourhood is a blunt instrument and we need to look at other ideas for reducing pollution, slowing the spread of COVID and

Lianne, a mother of two, is one of the traders on Melbourne Grove who was unable to pay her own wage during lockdown. All the government support went on rent.

Like others she has not had any rent reduction or a pause. She told the News she knew of one business that took just £30 last week.

Although the road block and neighbouring CPZ - the shops have also lost around a third of nearby parking spaces - are not the sole cause of their precarious situation, it is certainly not helping them recover.

Lianne says some days she now only makes a ‘handful’ of sales - but things were faring better for the two-and-ahalf months before the scheme was put in place.

Matt Rowden, from GM’s hairdressers, is unequivocal when asked how the

road closure has impacted his business; he says business is down by 45 per cent ‘at least’.

“Guests of the salon are talking with their feet, actually saying it’s taken an extra 40 minutes to do a journey that used to be just ten minutes,” he explained.

“Since coming back on July 4, for eight weeks our business grew each week at a comfortable rate and then, boom, the council closed the roads up and we’ve taken a severe hit.

“People are just avoiding the area as you do when you know there are a set of temp lights causing mayhem. East Dulwich will be a ghost town before long.”

He says he feels like traders are being used as ‘guinea pigs’ as the council tests its air pollution measures, saying: “We personally as a business cannot go on longer than Christmas under this

pressure. Losing £1,000 to £2,000 per week is not sustainable.”

The salon is one of the businesses unlikely to see its client base keen to cycle or wait for a bus in the rain after their appointments. They also depend on arriving on time - an added issue when trying to ensure smooth movement of customers through a socially distanced shop.

This is an added challenge Yeliz Dibi, from Peckham, is all too familiar with. The manager of HB Therapy, which offers services including beauty appointments and massage, says clients are arriving late, overlapping with others and telling her they can’t get public transport due to mobility issues, but are worried about using public transport as infections rise again.

“Right now we are struggling to make any income,” she said on Tuesday. “We don’t even break even sometimes. New Year is make or break for us - or sooner if there is a second lockdown.”

She also paid full rent during the months when forced to stay shut and saw her team cut from nine to five employees.

Despite all this, and having to buy expensive PPE, she has not put prices up because ‘everyone is in the same boat’.

“I didn’t think it would be this hard reopening - because we are really struggling. I am just not sure we can survive.

“In a good week we would take about £10,000 overall but now we barely make £4,000 in takings and that has to go on rent, bills, salaries...

“I didn’t get any letters about the road closing, but I get that some people want it closed and why.

“One of the worst things about it is

that it has left the community divided.

“I’d ask the council to reopen straight away, but if they aren’t going to do that at the very least come up with ideas for how we can get more customers in and mitigate the impact.

“Right now we are the ones bringing ideas to the table, like setting up a market to bring more people in, and they’re saying things will take time and the road closures will bed in.

“We don’t have time. Businesses need action now. Without its independent shops East Dulwich wouldn’t be East Dulwich.”

This paper asked Southwark Council to respond to claims Melbourne Grove businesses were left in the dark about the low emission neighbourhood, and asked whether it was reconsidering how the scheme had been implemented.

Councillor Catherine Rose, cabinet member for leisure, environment and roads at Tooley Street, gave the following statement: “We understand the concerns raised by businesses on Melbourne Grove.

“Both myself, Cllr Burgess and ward councillors have met with the traders and are very sympathetic to the issues they have raised, we are reviewing the impact of the traffic reducing measures on their businesses and looking at what mitigations can be put in place.

“I want to see a long term, sustainable reduction in cars and low traffic neighbourhoods are one of a variety of potentially impactful ways of achieving low traffic Southwark.

“It’s important to encourage active travel to our high streets and we’ll also be working with traders to see what we can do to increase cycle parking in the Grove Vale and Melbourne Grove area.”

Petition BUILDs over banned right-hand turn in bermondsey

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A petition against a banned right-hand turn from Bermondsey’s Southwark Park Road into Jamaica Road has been signed by nearly 800 people.

Cars have been forbidden from turning right into Jamaica Road since the end of last month, as a segregated cycleway was opened. Cyclists are not barred from using the right-turn.

The petition, started last week in opposition to the change has hit 766 signatures at the time of writing.

The petition states: “Due to growing concerns by residents of both Bermondsey, Rotherhithe and neighbouring areas, we believe, as a community, that this amendment should be withdrawn, and for the right turn into Jamaica Road to be reinstalled

for use by all motor vehicles.”

Among the concerns raised are increased congestion leading to the Rotherhithe Tunnel and noise pollution from queuing traffic attempting to use other routes.

“This will cause even more traffic,” said one signatory.

“I need to use my car at times and currently it’s taking me 40min to do an 8 min journey.”

Another, Jan McIntosh, added: “This is going to cause utter chaos. Who in their right mind would ever suggest this. Totally ridiculous.”

The move lasts for a year initially before being reviewed. In consultation, TfL said the move was necessary to prevent congestion.

“Our traffic counts show that approximately 300-400 vehicles currently turn right from Southwark Park Road on to Jamaica Road during

the morning peak hour, the majority of which consists of strategic traffic heading towards Rotherhithe Tunnel,” it said.

“The traffic modelling that we previously undertook for the Cycleway 4 proposals showed that an additional 200-300 vehicles per hour may prefer to use Southwark Park Road if the turn is not banned.

“Our assessment found that banning the right turn from Southwark Park Road would reduce congestion at peak periods at the junction, make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road and improve conditions for people who want to cycle and keep journey times for the P12 bus route neutral in the morning and evening peak.”

The News contacted TfL for comment on whether the right-hand turn would be abandoned following opposition, but did not receive a response before going to press.

Police, ambulance and Guy’s all say they won’t support hard road closures

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The police, ambulance service and Guy’s Hospital have indicated to Southwark Council they will not support hard road closures because they increase response times to emergencies.

According to a proposed road closure published by the council, the three organisations’ preference is for “camera enforced closures without physical prevention for vehicles,” instead.

A fresh string of proposed road changes have been published by the council, affecting Bermondsey Street, Great Suffolk Street, Burbage Road, Lower Road, and Peckham Rye. They are awaiting approval by Southwark’s transport boss, Cllr Catherine Rose, not before today (Thursday, October 8).

One, in Bermondsey Street, would see modal filters between Morocco Street and White’s Grounds, and lockable bollards.

“Due [to] costs associated with the installation of ANPR cameras are

not appropriate for an experimental scheme, and we have preserved access to all roads,” states a report by a council officer.

Signs would be considered if the change was made permanent, it adds.

Great Suffolk Street will see an overhaul as part of a new Low Traffic Neighbourhood under the batch of changes.

It means the street would become one-way northbound between Union Street and Southwark Street.

Other one-way systems would be created on surrounding roads, including Lavington Street, Webber Street, Sawyer Street and Great Guildford Street.

This is to make the area more cycle-friendly, and would last an initial eighteen months, before being expected to become permanent.

In Rotherhithe’s Lower Road the council intends to extend Cycleway 4 in temporary materials to Evelyn Street, to create a segregated twoway cycle lane.

This is expected to become permanent as the route for Cycleway

4 will eventually connect Tower Bridge to Greenwich.

In Dulwich’s Burbage Road, recommendations include “a bus and cycle gate with a northbound camera access restriction” at the junction of College Road roundabout and Burbage Road.

It would be enforced Monday to Friday from 8 – 10am and 3-6pm.

Meanwhile, a bus gate between Nunhead Crescent and Nunhead Lane, allowing buses, cyclists and authorised cars only is proposed.

“To help people return to work there are two main reasons why Southwark needs to fast track various transport measures to increase walking and cycling and keep driving low,” states a Southwark report.

“Firstly, the return to work process will involve the phased opening of different schools, shops, businesses and leisure facilities.

“Secondly, during the first year up to 40% less people are likely to use public transport to return to work in London because of concerns about social distancing and contact.”

CPZ consultation to re-run

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A proposal to extend the hours of controlled parking in the heart of Bermondsey has been delayed until 2021 because of coronavirus.

The News reported last week of resident anger, after a proposal to extend a controlled parking zone (CPZ) in Bermondsey from 8.30am to 11pm every day of the week.

However, despite a letter that was posted out to residents, the council has actually said it will rerun a consultation into the proposal because residents “felt unable to participate.”

“We recommended to extend the

operating hours of CPZ ‘G’ from Monday to Friday 8.30am to 6.30pm to Monday to Sunday 8.30am to 11pm,” the council said at the end of August.

This was put out to statutory consultation in 2020. However, as a result of the Covid-19 emergency, many people felt they were unable to participate.

“Therefore, the statutory consultation will be re-run in 2021.”

If approved in 2021, the move would see the hours extended, meaning evening visitors may be forced to pay for parking.

The change had been due to come into force on October 19 before the delay. The area affected includes the Four Squares and Kirby Estates.

Burgess Sports is encouraging runners to help raise funds for its Fit and Fed programme helping young families across the borough.

The sign-up fee for the virtual run series will pay for four days’ worth of healthy meals for one child.

Participants can run 5, 10 or 12 kilometres at their own pace, either in one go or throughout the whole week.

Although many are running in Burgess Park, you can complete the run anywhere – and will receive a special medal after sending in a screenshot of your completed run time.

Burgess Sports’ Winter run series take place on the first Sunday of every month and costs £10 for an adult and £6 for a child.

Amy Glover donned her running shoes and ran the lengthy 26 miles from Bermondsey to raise funds for the charity, as her mum Cindy works there.

She was one of a handful who pledged to do the run for Time and Talents in recognition of the work it does in the community.

“I’ve done a few half marathons for local charities, but never a full one before,” she said. “I’m not sure what made me sign up, but growing up and seeing it go past your house, it’s not something I thought I’d ever do.”

Amy said she felt the need to raise money for the charity because she had seen first-hand the work it does.

The 28-year-old used to work at the Salmon Youth Centre from the age

of sixteen, and had been involved in fitness classes there before going to university.

“Time and Talents, it’s just a real community hub. Hearing all the stories of the people they help is so interesting,” she said.

The run itself went very well, she said - “Better than expected!”

Despite the pouring rain, Amy managed to complete the run in just over five hours, with friends and her partner keeping her company on the route.

“The weather was awful,” she laughed. “My boyfriend joined me for the whole run and I had a few friends who joined me for a couple of parts.

“The people who live along the route, they were all part of that journey.”

Borough market is baking for beirut

Traders at Borough Market are holding a bake sale to raise funds for victims of the devastating explosion in Beirut earlier this year.

Bake for Beirut, led by trader Arabica, will take place on October 17, from 11am to 2pm in the Market Hall.

All of the proceeds of the sale will go towards two organisations helping in the aftermath of the explosion on August 4: Impact Lebanon and the Lebanese Red Cross.

“I travel to Lebanon often, and every time the warmth and hospitality of the people radiates,” said James Walters, who is the founder of Arabica.

“It’s the kind of place you can strike up a conversation easily and before you know it you’ve been invited home for supper and you don’t leave until your belly is bulging more than usual.

“Many of these conversations have turned into friendships for me. And many of these friends have been affected by the blast both personally and professionally.”

Past winners of the Great British Bake Off will be joining, Ruby Bhogal and Edd Kimber, alongside food Instagram star, Clerkenwell Boy. A cookbook auction and online raffle will raise more funds, with prizes including a pizza oven, a Mons Cheese hamper and gift vouchers from top restaurants.

customers can browse safely and have seen some donations rise as people had a clear out during lockdown.

“On this recent visit, it was great to learn about Sense’s new Forgotten Families campaign – the campaign shines a light on how difficult it has been for many disabled adults and their families during the pandemic.

Many services and support centres that they need have been closed sadly.

“Sense shops play a very important role in raising money for disabled people with some complex conditions.

“I used to work for a disability charity so I understand how vital it is that disabled people get the support they need, even during crises.”

Educational charitY’s online series for families Dulwich’s Bell House is putting on a series of free and paidfor online classes throughout October and November – including sessions for dyslexic children and their parents, help with managing anxiety, and how to make a film in a weekend.

The educational charity’s Supporting the Dyslexic Learner course is aimed at helping parents to understand more about dyslexia and how they can help their child learn and develop. Held over six weekly sessions, the course costs £100 or £10 per session.

Bell House is also running a four day course on touch-typing for people with dyslexia, for children in years five and six, costing £125.

Coping with Anxiety, which begun on October 6, is a series of free online support sessions, on a drop-in basis, for anyone aged eighteen to 30. It is designed as a safe space to discuss anxiety-related feelings, emotions and the everyday experience of dealing with anxiety. The talk is hosted by psychologists from the clinic Circle Psychology and Partners, who will share advice.

TechTogether is an online session where anyone can submit tech and IT questions with no such thing as a ‘silly question’. The first few weeks will

cover computer basis, how to store and remember online passwords, and online banking.

Understanding Emotions for Parents of Adolescent Children, on October 17, is a workshop aimed at parents of children aged 10-14 showing signs of behavioural or social problems offering advice and practical tools to support them. Tickets are £5 with some bursary places available.

Nature for Wellbeing, a free event held on October 27, will share research into the role nature plays in our wellbeing and mental health, and how to incorporate it into daily life, while Self-compassion: Dealing with your Inner Critic, also free, focuses on how to make our inner dialogue help us rather than holding us back.

The charity is also running qualified mental health first aid course – which costs £250.

Roads, Black History Month and struggling local businesses

I

am delighted that the Santander Cycle scheme has finally arrived in our borough.

This good news has been supplemented by the completion of the Cycleway 4 route which stretches from Tower Bridge to join up with Rotherhithe through Bermondsey.

With a significant uptick in cycling in the capital since lockdown began, this could not have come at a better time. We know that air quality disproportionately impacts poorer Londoners, contributing to almost 10,000 premature deaths each year. This is why we cannot afford a car-led recovery from the pandemic and must switch to greener ways of getting around the capital wherever possible.

However, walking and cycling in our city must be made safer. The latest figures show that 166 Londoners were tragically killed or seriously

injured on Southwark’s roads last year. TfL’s ‘Vision Zero’ plan aims to bring this number down to zero within the next two decades. It has been encouraging to see some progress made to this effect, with an overhaul of Rotherhithe Roundabout and the installation of three new pedestrian crossings on Jamaica Road.

October marks Black History Month, and it has been positive to see the mayor announce that he is working with the social enterprise, the Black Curriculum, to ensure that City Hall’s London Curriculum is even more representative of our city and its overlooked and often suppressed histories.

This will hopefully boost the inspiring efforts of the many pupils across the capital who have called on their schools and the government to decolonise their lessons in all subject areas.

I recently met virtually with the 1st Southwark Scout Group – the young Scouts were armed with questions about the recent Black Lives Matter movement and how I would be working to help address the issue of racism and creating positive opportunities for them and their peers.

We will continue to keep the pressure on, and proudly celebrate the huge contribution that people from BAME backgrounds have made to making London the successful and pluralistic city that it is.

With a concerning rise in cases, the economic impact of a potentially imminent second wave of COVID-19 will be at the forefront of the minds of countless business owners in Southwark, and particularly those working in the cultural and hospitality sectors. Frustratingly, the chancellor’s recently announced 'Winter Economic Plan' fell short of offering the support that London’s enterprises and firms of all sizes desperately need.

In recent months, City Hall has stepped in to offer a share in millions of pounds of grants to struggling businesses. However, we cannot escape the reality that the Government needs to give certain sectors and industries another shot in the arm to protect thousands of jobs as we enter some very challenging winter months ahead.

Due to having lost most of its revenue during lockdown, TfL is also on the brink of bankruptcy and needs a long-term and sustainable government funding package to protect key transport services and infrastructure projects. Ministers need to get around the table with TfL and the mayor to urgently put this in place.

Why is Southwark Council still burning Fossil Fuels?

Last year Southwark Council voted to declare a ‘Climate Emergency’.

I know this because I was one of the councillors that voted for this... in fact every Southwark Councillor did. So imagine my surprise when last week this paper revealed that the very same council is procuring just thirteen per cent of its energy needs from Green energy and will continue to burn fossil fuels.

The council plans to invest in 10,000 trees by 2022 (expected to cost at least five million), but is not willing to invest £50,00 so that they could have 100 per cent green electricity. If the council doesn’t take the lead, who will? It is not a case of ‘hoping; for improvements – we must make them happen.

Why is Southwark Council (and TfL) closing off roads?

I read an article in Southwark News last month that shocked me. Its headline read “residents say paramedics delayed reaching woman who’d fallen from height

because of Council’s ‘Low Traffic” Roadblock. If you’ve been anywhere in the capital recently, you will know why this happened. Local councils and TFL have blocked off numerous smaller roads to encourage more use by cyclists and pedestrians.

In theory this sounds good. We all want less pollution and less traffic. Yet the result has been the opposite. The same number of cars, all squeezed onto fewer roads. The result: gridlock and hideous pollution on those roads.

To make it worse, this decision was taken with no public consultation, was rushed through and apparently will stay in place for at least a year and a half. The council needs to hold a proper public consultation NOW. Why is TFL not asking for funding for the Bakerloo line Extension?

TFL have decided to stop asking the government to fund the Bakerloo Line Extension. At the same time, they are pressing on with the two billion ‘white elephant’ scheme -the Silvertown Tunnel.

The Liberal Democrats campaigned long and hard for the Bakerloo Line Extension over 20+ years ever since Simon Hughes became an MP in Southwark (just as we campaigned, successfully, for the Jubilee line extension).

Cycleway 4 opens along Tooley Street and Jamaica Road to Rotherhithe I welcome the new cycle facilities, on the whole. But as a cyclist living off Salter Rd, if I am cycling eastwards from Tower Bridge, I do not want to cross at the Southwark Park Road lights to use the part of the cycleway that runs past the Southwark Park gates, and I use the bus lane instead towards the tunnel, then turn left onto Brunel Road. The reason is that the new Pelican/Toucan lights just before the Rotherhithe Tunnel roundabout are unresponsive to cyclists. Even if you press the button, the wait is frustrating. When the traffic is crawling, it could easily be stopped far faster, without causing any delay to vehicular traffic.

Southwark Liberal Democrat opposition leader ’m writing this, the second of my columns for Southwark News in a very bad mood. As a result, I’ve decided to make this week’s column a list of things happening in Southwark that are just dumb and need to be changed.

controlled London council and Mayor both fail to ensure it is prioritised, at the same time that they are pressing ahead with plans to build nearly 20,000 extra homes along the Old Kent Road.

If you’ve ever sat on a bus stuck in a traffic jam in rush hour on Old Kent Road, you will find yourself wondering how these new Southwark residents will EVER travel anywhere – once again, gridlock.

Your Southwark Liberal Democrat Councillors will continue to work with Caroline Pigeon, your Liberal Democrat representative on the GLA to campaign for the Bakerloo Line extension to be re-prioritised and to press the mayor to keep to his promises.

And just because I’m in a bad mood today, why do people wear face masks on their chins?

Yes, not everything is the fault of politicians. We all have our part to play.

So, if you’re on public transport or in a public building, PLEASE, wear a face mask and wear it over your nose and mouth. To date, no-one has spread COVID via their chins. You might have COVID without any symptoms at all.

You wear a mask to protect others.

The hard road closures are too blunt an instrument for struggling businesses

T

he owner of HB Therapy in Melbourne Grove hit the nail on the head when she told us this week that on top of seeing her income drop and customers arriving late or cancelling appointments, one of the worst things about the new Low Emissions Neighbourhood schemes across London is how they divide communities.

That is not only true in terms of who loves or loathes them - but who benefits from reduced air pollution and who is left with more traffic clogging their roads.

Another business owner described them as a ‘blunt instrument’, while the owner of MG’s hair dressers said he felt traders were being used as guinea pigs.

Particularly striking is how, in our feature on the East Dulwich area, many of the businesses

But hard road closures, when many have only just reopened after months with no earnings whatsoever, is leaving them in a precarious position.

Their call for the council to help them right now - not wait for the scheme to ‘bed in’ and find ways to generate more footfall and bring people to the area seems completely reasonable.

If the road closures are here to stay - at least for a few more months - how can we still give businesses a fighting chance through a hard winter? This, surely, is one task all of us can support.

A Kennington church is celebrating Harvest in an unusual way this year, with a scarecrow trail.

Parishioners at St Anselm’s Church have been laying scarecrows in a trail from the church to Vauxhall City Farm.

But unfortunately for Boris Johnson’s chief advisor, Dominic Cummings, one of the scarecrows has been made in his likeness on Kennington Lane.

The scarecrow depicts Cumming’s distinctive glasses and beanie combo - with a sign pointing to Barnard Castle and a bag which reads: “Should have gone to Specsavers.”

Creepy-crawlies save the planet at London Bridge

A London Bridge business has been handed £10m in government funding to run the UK’s first large-scale insect farm.

Entocycle, based in railway arches in Shand Street, uses creepy-crawlies to make ingredients for pet food.

Insects are fed food waste from the local area, like coffee grounds, to make animal feed, which is more green than traditional methods.

Now the money will go towards raising black soldier flies in a venue outside London, to recycle food waste into animal feed.

By 2040, the centre aims to have saved 50m tonnes of CO2, and have created thousands of jobs.

The impact of farming flies could be huge, says founder Kieran Whitaker, because it will help the UK become carbon free.

two jailed on firearm offences

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Surrey Quays man has been jailed for more than five years for a firearms offence.

Harvey Gillett, 23, was sentenced at Kingston Crown Court on September 30, along with co-defendant Dean Batchelor, 28, from Clapham.

Both men had pleaded guilty at the same court in February.

Gillett, who pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm when prohibited for five years and driving a motor vehicle taken without the owner’s consent, was sentenced to five years and 10 months’ in jail.

Batchelor, who pleaded guilty to the sale or transfer of a firearm to Gillett and the importation of two firearms and pepper gas ammunition, was sentenced to eight years and nine months behind bars.

According to Scotland Yard, Gillett was seen travelling in May 2019 on a stolen motorbike with fake plates

to an address in Stockwell, linked to Batchelor.

Twenty minutes later, he went home and was seen by coppers going to an electric cupboard, wearing a rucksack and gloves. When he left, he no longer had them.

He was arrested by cops, who found a partially converted firearm in the cupboard.

The court heard how Gillett, who has a previous firearms conviction, was found in possession of a burner phone, with a contact for someone called ‘Aggro.’ This was Batchelor, police say.

It revealed phone calls between the pair around the time of the visit. Days later, the Border Force intercepted two imitation revolvers and twenty rounds of pepper gas destined for Batchelor’s home address in Clapham.

Officers say their investigations revealed Batchelor ordered and paid for the guns. In June, he then travelled to East Sussex to a replica weapons shop and purchase two replica colt guns and blank rounds.

He was arrested as he left, telling police: “How are they illegal ordered off the internet,” which cops said showed he had knowledge of the guns ordered to his home.

Detectives spoke to the owner of the store who confirmed that Batchelor had previously attended the store to collect three replica firearms, which he had purchased the day before over the telephone – one of which was the same model as that seized from Gillett.

Detective Inspector Tom Williams, from Specialist Crime, said: “This investigation led to several lethal weapons and ammunition being taken off the streets of London.

“If they had not been seized, I have no doubt that they would have gone on to cause at the very least serious harm, if not death. These convictions are a result of extremely hard work by the team, who worked tirelessly to secure evidence against Gillett and Batchelor.

“In the end, the evidence was so strong against them that they had no choice but to plead guilty.”

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Veteran gay rights campaigner and former Bermondsey parliamentary candidate Peter Tatchell has branded Southwark Council 'homophobic' over its efforts to stop gay cruising in Burgess Park.

As the News has reported, Burgess Park has developed a reputation as hookup area in recent years but park goers have been particularly concerned about sex acts, including those being filmed, taking place in daylight hours.

Complaints to police include cases where parents and children have witnessed sex acts. One distraught mum hurried away her children after stumbling across men having sex at 8am on a Sunday morning. Much of the activity occurs in close proximity to children's play areas.

Tatchell said the council should have liaised with the LGBT+ community

Judging by the replies online, few agree

with him. "I was witness to public sex when I was about eight years old," said one poster.

"It traumatised me something awful.

I could not eat, I could not sleep and I carried a huge weight of shame guilt and confusion.

"It's deviant and AGAINST THE LAW for good reason."

Transport police appeal after ‘sexual assault’

The police say the victim was attacked on a train travelling from

Sevenoaks into London at 7.10pm on Sunday, September 20.

Officers say a man approached the victim and made “suggestive and threatening comments” before the assault.

The attack is said to have took place on board the train near Crofton Park - where he disembarked.

CCTV images have now been released of a man (pictured) that police say could help their investigation.

Men ‘block Old Kent Road to film drill video’

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Police were forced to authorise a dispersal order around the Old Kent Road last week after men allegedly blocked the road to film a drill video.

Cops were called to the road at 10.15pm late Thursday to “numerous calls” from the public, saying that a large group of men were blocking the Old Kent Road, fighting, shouting, and playing loud music.

They were also reportedly filming a drill video.

Some of those men were believed to have links to local gangs, said top cop, Ch Supt Colin Wingrove, the borough commander for Southwark and Lambeth.

He added that officers have authorised a Section 35 anti-social behaviour order “in response to this incident”, and “to quell further acts likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to members of the public.”

The order gave officers the power to bar individuals from the area for up to 48 hours, if they believe they may be antisocial The order lasted until 10.55pm on Saturday, October 3. It covers the area bounded by Rolls Road and St James’s Road to the Old Kent Road.

Nurses retire after clocking up over 75 years’ service

Carole Kimberlin and Betty Davis have chalked up nearly eight decades of service between them, the last 20 of them at the ear, nose and throat team at the hospitals.

Volunteers needed for COVID-19 vaccine trial

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Guy’s and St Thomas’ is looking for volunteers to join a COVID-19 vaccine trial as it reaches the next stage in testing.

The Novavax COVID-19 vaccine has already completed preliminary testing in humans. These early trials showed promising results on antibody levels in healthy volunteers and, to date, no serious safety concerns have been identified.

It now requires testing on a large scale. A study involving 9,000 people across eighteen regions of the UK is beginning as the trial is opened up to the general public. Guy's and St Thomas' is looking to recruit volunteers aged eighteen to 84, and says most people will be ideal candidates. But those with a body mass index below 17 or above 35, people taking anticoagulant therapy (aspirin or clopidogrel is fine) or anyone pregnant or aiming to become pregnant in the next year, would not be suitable.

Participants at higher risk from COVID-19 for any reason - due to their age, social situation or ethnicity - are particularly welcome.

“I have been blessed to have had an amazing career and have loved every minute of it."

Betty, from Gillingham in Kent, qualified in January 1985 and worked at The Royal London, before taking agency shifts at both Guy’s and St Thomas’.

“Throughout my career I’ve met amazing colleagues and patients and been inspired by them. The thing I take away with me is everybody is unique and you get out of life what you put into it,” said the 60-year-old.

She added: “When I’m not nursing I’m fundraising. Over the years I’ve

helped to raise thousands of pounds for Macmillan and charities that support people with HIV, lupus and homelessness.

Despite even getting coronavirus in March, Betty returned to the frontline a month later when she had recovered.

While Carole plans to spend time with her family and to carry on cycling, Betty’s not ready to give up working completely and plans to take on some agency shifts.

She will also continue with her poetry writing and work in her local church and community.

The new smartphone app launched on Thursday, September 24, after being trialled in Newham and other areas.

Its success depends on the number of people using it - and the businesses that register to put a test and trace PR code on display in their premises.

The government estimates at least seven million people will need to download it for it to be effective at slowing the spread of the virus.

A Perfect Time at The Omnibus I love it when a play knows where to end and, thankfully, writer Pedro Leandro has achieved this in his short and sweet piece, We Were Having A Perfectly Nice Time, writes Susan Hallissey.

This has got to be one of my favourite productions at The Omnibus. It’s a pity I didn’t get to see a copy of the play for sale, as I would have liked to read the dialogue again and again.

‘We were having a perfectly nice time’ is definitely my type of theatre – beautifully written, no gimmicks and performed with great dexterity. It is only occasionally that I hear a piece of text where nothing is wasted. To present a production in such stark surroundings is testament to the script. Evan Lordan’s direction is as concise as the work itself and takes nothing away from the performance.

I left with a satisfied smile after having had more than ‘a perfectly nice time.’ I’d best stop or it will take you longer to read this than go and see the play…Go and see the play!

Beautifully written and staged simply we are left with a minimalist set, two chairs with two actors facing stage front.

A long, silent intro leads to a burst of energy in which actors Stephanie Booth and Hannah Livingstone attack the dialogue, immediately engaging the audience. Like machine guns their timing and chemistry without even looking at each other is rare.

With deadpan humour and the curious ramblings of bored and drunk flatmates we are drawn into the crazy, sad and funny world of the two friends (or are they?). Until, that is, their ‘perfectly nice time’ is spoiled by a revelation, followed by more quick wit and a final rant.

We hear about the heartbroken neighbour driven to Salsa classes, mocked for being an ‘adult beginner.’ We hear about lost loves and ‘the one’ or ‘one of the ones’.

I was touched by the line, ‘even in your

Music gives Eva a zest for life

Rotherhithe’s Eva Maria Doroszkowska is a concert pianist who also teaches her skills to others, and writes about music, which is not surprising as her mother was a musician and piano teacher who began teaching Eva to play when she was just four years old, writes Michael Holland.

“Funnily enough she didn’t want to teach me initially,” she remembers. “I used to sit watching my siblings and other children play but my mother thought four years was too young for me. She wanted me to wait until I was a little older, but then she saw how stubborn I was. I was already making my own tunes at the piano so she gave in and decided to teach me properly.

I won Young Pianist of the Year aged nine and was competing regularly in lots of competitions and festivals.”

Travelling every week for three hours for piano lessons was just a normal part of Eva’s childhood, which paid off with a scholarship to the Royal Northern College of Music to study piano and then more scholarships to study with renowned professors in Poland and Holland.

“Musicians never stop studying!” she exclaims.

As a child Eva was fascinated by “the way hands flew around the keys and made magical sounds - It’s a sensory experience as well as audio. It uses every part of me, physical and mental.” She describes how her imagination “takes flight in music and the world around me stimulates my music making - they are intertwined.” And after having music in her life for so much of it, Eva reveals, “I cannot imagine life without music. It’s a vocation and a compulsion. It’s your modus operandi. I’m a very driven person constantly working towards the next goal musically, and that’s what gives you your zest for life and keeps you going. At one point, I was living a parallel life in London and Copenhagen, working regularly with an ensemble, but in the end I chose to settle in London to be close to family and friends.”

You can feel Eva’s passion coming through when she talks about her work: “There is nothing more exciting than being part of a big ensemble and at the centre of memorable concerts, where you feel that everything has come together at the right time. There is that extra magical dimension to the concert when the synergy between you and the audience is

so special. When you let go and you feel really on top of everything, the acoustic is great, the audience are great, the venue special and you have a beautiful instrument to work with, then it’s pure magic and the best feeling in the whole world; you truly feel alive, and when all those uncontrollable elements come together in the optimum way then it feels like flying. The adrenaline and sheer joy at those moments are amazing.”

And there are the times when life is not like flying: “I broke my wrist and suddenly my whole life changed in an instant. I was in A&E, frantically ringing my agent to cancel concerts. I had to cancel a concert in London that was in four days and a tour to New York and Canada that I had been looking forward to. It was terrible.

Whilst that was my immediate concern there was the deeper horror that I might never be able to resume concert life or play piano again. Whilst some part of me was in physical pain, I almost didn’t register it because I just kept saying over and over again ‘I am going to play piano, I am going to play piano’. That was what got me through - that and the unbelievable kindness of people and an amazing hand surgeon.”

It took three months before Eva was able to play properly, and it was her musician’s training that helped: “Every time I went to the physio I would treat it like a competition - measuring improvement and trying to make the quickest recovery. The whole experience made me realise how lucky I am. It made me very aware of how lucky I was to have the NHS too.”

The Covid-19 crisis has meant tours, festivals and lectures have been cancelled

but Eva has stayed positive: “I am enjoying the time to actually not have an immediate deadline to be ready for.

Plus, I am still I teaching talented young musicians at the Royal Academy of Music online. I am also going to be judging an online piano competition in Kazakhstan that I was supposed to be there for.

I am also enjoying arranging some compositions for chamber ensembles and of course daily piano practice never stops. The main thing is, you are a musician whether you have a concert or not and I need to keep in shape as much for my soul as for my fingers!”

The lockdown obviously presents problems but Eva sees it differently: “It is nice to have a pause to actually focus on your own creativity. I have had time to step back and benefit from more mental space, which is necessary for feeling fresh and inspired. We live in such a hectic city with so much going on it can be overwhelming, so I think it can be positive to take a step back and have a slower pace of life.”

But what about after the virus? “The world needs music! I hope live concerts will resume and that I will be able to pick up concertising again. There is a lot of music happening online but it is no substitute for the real live experience; as a performer it is about the spontaneity of being in the moment; when music engages all the senses!”

Ever the optimist Eva ends the interview with: “I hope we will all come through this having learned to experience what makes life special and value it that much more.” www.evamaria.co.uk

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk This Black History Month, Lenny Henry was joined by broadcaster Suzy Klein in a BBC Four documentary uncovering the history of black classical composers.

First broadcast on September 27 and now available on iPlayer, in Black Classical Music: The Forgotten History, Henry - a huge classical music fan himself - shines a light on some of the most talented musicians of their day whose names have been erased from history. He also challenges the notion that classical music and its modern-day audience is only for the white, middle aged and middle class.

In the late eighteenth century France one composer - Joseph Bologne, known as Chevalier de Saint-Georges - was successful and talented enough to have influenced Mozart. But the opportunity presented to him by Marie Antoinette to become director of the Royal Opera House was snatched away after the ladies of the chorus

said they were afraid of working with a black man.

Then there was Samuel ColeridgeTaylor (1875-1912) - not to be confused with the similarly-named Romantic poet he was named after.

Born in Holborn and raised in South Norwood, mixed race, Coleridge-Taylor was dubbed by fellow musicians as the “African Mahler” during his successful tours of the US in the early 1900s - even being received by President Theodore Roosevelt in the White House. He is still best known for his cantata Hiawatha's Wedding Feast. He died tragically young at just 37, and with little money. King George V held him in such high esteem he personally ensured his widow was provided with an annual pension of £100.

Another leading black musician to make south London his home was George Bridgetower (11 October 1778 – 29 February 1860) who died in Peckham, in penury, despite a virtuoso career. Bridgetower was born in Poland where his father, who at various times claimed to be an African prince, worked in the household of

Prince Hieronim Wincenty Radziwiłł.

A young Bridgetower was already performing all over Europe and showing precocious talent before his teens; meeting and even performing with Beethoven.

The two forged such a close bond that Beethoven dedicated his Violin Sonata No. 9 in A major (Op.47) to Bridgetower. But later the great friends and stage partners fell out, reportedly over a woman, and never made up. Brigetower was hailed as a genius by his contemporaries and continued performing - including with the Royal Philharmonic Society Orchestra. But, at the time of his death, he was destitute and living in a home for the poor - his name forgotten.

Other black composers to achieve world renown status despite the racist attitudes of their times include Florence Price, the first AfricanAmerican woman to have her music performed by a major symphony orchestra, and George Walker - the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for music.

sportsdesk@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY LOST the Vitality Blast final last Sunday as Notts Outlaws claimed just a second title with a six-wicket win in the 16-oversper-side contest under the Edgbaston lights.

Three years after lifting the trophy for the first time, they added a second triumph after chasing down a target of 128 with 16 balls to spare.

They put Surrey in and restricted them to 127 for seven, a total constructed almost entirely by a thirdwicket partnership of 90 from 52 balls between Jason Roy (66, 47 balls, seven fours, one six) and Laurie Evans (43, 23 balls, three fours two sixes).

Nobody else passed five against a well-drilled attack. Samit Patel (4-025-1) and Jake Ball (3-0-17-2) set the tone with impressive early overs and Ball returned to take the big wicket of Roy before Dan Christian finished with 4-0-23-4 to wreck Surrey’s hopes of a late charge.

Notts then lost Alex Hales to the first ball of the innings and limped to 19 for three but Ben Duckett (53 not out, 38 balls, eight fours) and Peter Trego (31, 21 balls, five fours and a six) added 63 in 33 balls to put their side in the box seat. Duckett stayed to see his side home, in the end, quite comfortably.

Surrey’s innings started unevenly as Hashim Amla and Will Jacks made just three apiece before sending up catches. Patel’s first three overs cost 14 to apply an early brake on the scoring and only when Evans, on his former home ground, and Roy were together did Surrey escape the shackles.

Roy reached his 38th T20 halfcentury from 36 balls while Evans bated explosively until he lifted Christian to deep-mid-wicket.

Ball returned to the attack to strike the pivotal blow with an in-ducker that trapped Roy in front. The nine balls left in the innings after that brought just eight runs for two wickets as Ben Foakes and Liam Plunkett tried and failed to clear the ropes off Christian.

At half-time, Notts looked slight favourites – less so when they dipped to four for two after nine balls. Hales scooped the first ball of the innings from Reece Topley, to Evans at deep square leg and Joe Clarke fell to a fine catch by Jamie Overton in the same position.

Lionesses show community spirit with new partnership

‘By simply answering a phone call, you can make someone’s life so much easier

The brand logo will feature on the Lionesses’ shorts for the remainder of the 2020-21 campaign.

The free app connects blind and lowvision people with volunteers who assist with any of their needs through a live video call. Since the app was launched in January 2015 it has had more than four million volunteers sign up to assist those with sight deficiencies and blindness, and has won awards such as ‘Most Innovative’, ‘Best Daily Helper’ and ‘Best Hidden Gem’.

In May 2018, Be My Eyes won the Google Play Award 2018 for ‘Best Accessibility Award’.

Speaking about the new partnership opportunity, Millwall Community Trust CEO, Sean Daly, said: “Everybody knows just how important community is to everyone at Millwall, and when the chance came along to partner with such a creative company, there was only one answer.

“Be My Eyes is an amazing organisation who do so much for those who need assistance in everyday life, so we at Millwall Lionesses are proud to have their logo on our kits and help boost awareness.”

Dulwich leave it late before spot-kick drama

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET boosted their coffers to the tune of £3,375 and booked their place in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup as they defeated Corinthian Casuals on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time last weekend.

The Hamlet, with nine players making their debuts, came from behind twice in their first game of the 2020-21 season before finally squeezing through.

Dulwich thought they had taken the lead in the seventeenth minute when Deon Moore found the back of the net, but the hosts were given a free-kick for a high boot from Danny Mills.

Mills also had an effort ruled out for offside and it was the hosts who went

ahead in first-half added-time.

The visitors were punished after Lewis White was dispossessed on halfway and Kieron Cadogan finished the counterattack past goalkeeper James Pardington.

Pardington then almost gifted their Isthmian League Premier Division opponents a second goal when his attempted throw hit one of his own players, but the home side had no one close enough to take advantage.

The introduction of Sanchez Ming helped swing the game back Dulwich’s way as he added a threat down the right.

The Hamlet levelled in the 71st minute when Korrey Henry fired home from the edge of the box for his first goal for the club.

Three minutes later Mills was denied by the post and worse followed as Benjamin Checklit smashed a brilliant shot past Pardington from 25 yards.

The Hamlet appeared to be running out of time to avoid a shock against a side a division below them. But in the 88th minute Moore came to the rescue to head past home goalkeeper James Bracken.

Henry almost won it in normal time for

Gavin Rose’s side, but his shot went just wide.

Former Millwall defender Jesse Debrah was first up in the shootout but Bracken saved his effort.

Pardington then kept out Hakeem Adelakun’s spot-kick and it was advantage Dulwich as Henry was successful from twelve yards and the Casuals missed as Pardington was again the hero.

The unpredictable drama continued with Jordan Higgs hitting the bar and then Checklit made it 1-1.

Aaron Barnes fired in to put the Hamlet 2-1 up, Youssef Bamba missing for the home side.

That gave Ming the chance to send his team into the next round, and he kept his nerve to secure Dulwich a tie against ninth-tier Christchurch of the Wessex League.

The game will be played on Tuesday, October 13 at 7.45pm at Christchurch’s Hurn Bridge Sports Ground.

The winners of the next round will receive £5,625, while the losers will get a £1,875 consolation.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk You WAIT 25 games for a goal and then the joy is ruined by a referee who makes a bizarre call that leaves everyone confused.

Tom Bradshaw scored for the first time since January 4 – his first in the league since last New Year’s Day – and he deserved for it to count for more than just a contribution to goal difference.

The controversy came in the first minute of added-time. The facts are that before Jed Wallace took the corner Shaun Hutchinson was being dragged by Marc Guehi. The Swansea defender continued to impede his Millwall opponent after Wallace took the set-piece, and as the ball was in flight to the back post Hutchinson was bundled over on the penalty spot.

But then referee Steve Martin produced a comedy act more befitting his American namesake. Martin clearly blew his whistle when the ball was in play. In fact the ball had already reached the back post.

Penalty and a chance to make it 2-2? Nope. Martin had other ideas.

Despite the ball being clearly in play he raised his left hand to indicate ‘wait’ to Wallace. Bit late for that, no? Then he spoke to Guehi and Hutchinson and ordered the corner to be retaken. Swansea cleared and that was Millwall’s chance gone.

Lions boss Gary Rowett didn’t mince his words.

“We should have had a penalty in the 90th minute,” Rowett said. “I think it was a bit of a cop-out from the referee.

I’ve seen it back, it’s the most blatant penalty you’re ever going to see.”

The other main talking point from the game was a squeal from Andre Ayew that could be heard back

by Jake Cooper’s stray elbow.

This was a sample of responses from Millwall players: “F**king embarrassing.”

“Does he need a tissue?”

“Something tells me he’ll play on, you know.”

After the checks for sniper fire around the Liberty Stadium, Ayew got to his feet and, shock, was fine to continue.

“I thought it was pretty embarrassing, in truth,” Rowett said: “There wasn’t a mark on him, put it that way, when he got up.”

In fairness, Rowett didn’t blame

his side’s first league defeat of the season on the officials or the playacting of some of the Swansea players.

He was more disappointed with the performance of his team.

Swansea had two-thirds of the possession in the first half but had just one shot on target, the same as the visiting Lions.

Bart Bialkowski kept out Matt Grimes’ effort 21 minutes in and just before half-time Cooper headed Wallace’s cross towards goal but it was a comfortable save for Steven Benda.

Millwall had the worst start to the second half. Morgan Gibbs-White crossed from the right and Mahlon

Romeo will be disappointed at how he let Jake Bidwell stick out a leg and toe the ball into the bottom left corner.

Millwall responded with Mason Bennett turning brilliantly on halfway before driving forward to find Wallace. Wallace scored two goals in his previous two league games but this time couldn’t hit the target as he dragged his effort wide.

But it didn’t take the visitors long to get back on terms through Bradshaw, who made space before finding the bottom right corner after Hutchinson had broken up a Swansea move before slipping his team-mate in on the right side of the box.

Both sides had efforts in the 55th minute when Gibbs-White was denied and then at the other end Bennett and Cooper couldn’t force their side in front.

Instead Swansea went back into the lead and it was a messy effort.

Millwall’s defenders will be annoyed at how they couldn’t clear the danger despite having several chances. After Bialkowski produced a brilliant save to keep out Bidwell’s back-heel, centre-back Ben Cabango reacted quickest in the box to make it 2-1.

Rowett sent on Matt Smith and Connor Mahoney for Bradshaw and Bennett in the 74th minute.

A minute later skipper Alex Pearce strode into Swansea’s half to test Benda who tipped over.

Pearce was taken off with five minutes left as Jon Dadi Bodvarsson came on and the Lions changed to four at the back.

Cooper was denied again in the first of five minutes of added-time when Benda tipped over his header from Wallace’s corner.

Then came Martin’s comedy effort, sending Millwall back over the border unimpressed.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk SCOTT MALONE has a unique claim to fame among his team-mates having never been relegated from the Premier League – and now he wants to add promotion to the top flight to his CV.

Malone boasts tongue-in-cheek about that record, having spent one season battling against the likes of Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane as Huddersfield protected their Premier League status successfully in 2017-18.

Malone, 29, had some testing times in that season with Huddersfield, but also had plenty of high points.

He came on as a substitute in a 2-1 win at home against Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United. He was involved in a 4-1 win at Watford and a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge as the Terrier’s defied the pre-season odds to stay up in their first-ever season in the Premier League.

But there were plenty of steep learning curves, particularly against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, and facing a deadly Kane.

Malone had played for the likes of Southend, Burton and Bournemouth before eventually becoming a Premier League player at the age of 26.

“Great memories, to be honest,” Malone said when asked to recall that campaign.

“I came through at Wolves when I was sixteen, seventeen. I went out on loan, came back and they were doing a bit of a yo-yo between the Premier League and the Championship so I found it hard to get in.

“I grew up going to Premier League games as a youth player at Wolves and I always wanted to be a Premier League player.

“I went down into League Two, then League One, then the Championship. So I almost did it backwards, if you like, but I eventually got there.

“I really enjoyed it. I played against some of the greatest players in the world.

No regrets, really.

“I’ve yet to be relegated from the

Premier League – I’ve just got to get promoted to it now! I’ve survived there once but I want to get back there.

Promotion would be nice.

“I remember playing in the home game [against Man City] at the John Smith’s.

We went 1-0 up and I don’t think they’d lost in the Premier League for something like 30-odd games. That was quite an exciting time.

“But then [Raheem] Sterling got past me and I brought him down for a penalty.

We went on to lose with a deflection.

Sterling was so sharp, he was very good.

“The physical demands are okay, it’s not as much hustle and bustle as the Championship. It’s more strategic. When you do work it’s higher-intensity work.

You have to be switched on constantly, the slightest mistake and you get punished.

“I remember when we were 3-0 down to Spurs after about 25 minutes. Harry Kane got the ball three times and they scored three times. It was like, ‘wow’. You just can’t make a mistake.

“The demands are really tough.”

Ransom was one of four players signed by manager Andy Hessenthaler ahead of the game, and he powered in a header to give Dover three points in their league opener.

Meanwhile, Danny McNamara got to experience playing one of the Old Firm giants – but St Johnstone were denied right at the death as Celtic scored two late goals at McDiarmuid Park.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DANNY MCNAMARA isn’t giving up on his ambition to be a success at Millwall – as he makes waves in the Scottish Premiership with St Johnstone.

McNamara, 21, has arguably been the Saints’ best player this season in his loan spell from the Lions.

He has established himself as a regular in the side, playing at right wing-back, in former Millwall assistant manager Callum Davidson’s team.

McNamara has played ten times this season and despite Davidson’s side being bottom of the Scottish top flight he has equipped himself well.

McNamara enjoys working with Davidson.

“It’s a massive step-up from under23s football, no disrespect to that,” McNamara tells the News. “But for my development it was time for me to start getting regular men’s football. Going out on loan has done me a lot of favours and I’m really enjoying my time at the moment.

“I worked with Cal a little bit at Millwall. He must have seen my clips when I was [on loan] at Newport. Cal’s a class manager. He’s had a lot of faith in me and I hope I’ve given him the trust back.

“Training is always high-intensity, always a good standard. He’s a class guy to work with. It’s very similar to how Gary Rowett works at Millwall. If training isn’t high-intensity [Davidson] lets you know.

“I’m playing right wing-back. Last season I was playing more of a rightback in a four. This year I’ve been moved in the 5-2-3/5-3-2 formation. It suits me a lot. I like to get forward, I like to defend.

“It’s good that Millwall’s first team play like that as well so it gives me something to work towards.

“I knew it would be best for me to go out and get games rather than just being in and around the squad or playing 23s.

I didn’t want that, I wanted to be playing for a first team.

“I feel that if I’m given the chance I can take the opportunity. Hopefully that time comes.

“I spoke to Gary Rowett before I left, he said going to St Johnstone will be the best thing for you, going to play games at a high standard.

“He said it’s very gritty, they love tackles – it’ll suit your style of play. I just couldn’t wait to get going.”

McNamara gets feedback from Millwall players, mostly from playercoach Shaun Williams.

McNamara said: “I’ve been keeping in touch with Shaun Williams, he’s been watching my games back and giving me feedback. He lets you know what you can improve on, what you’re doing well.

‘Five out of ten’ – Millwall boss rates difficult start to season

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT has put on his teacher’s hat and rated Millwall’s start to the season “five out of ten” as they go into the international break.

The Lions have four points from four games after playing play-off favourites Stoke, Brentford and Swansea, as well as promoted Rotherham.

Millwall lost for the first time in the league this season at Swansea last weekend, when they were denied a late penalty for what Rowett called a “blatant” foul on Shaun Hutchinson.

Rowett was asked to rate the season so far.

“I’d probably give us a five out of ten,” he said. “We’ve had a difficult start but nevertheless our aims are to be in with all of those teams.

“And if you look at the closeness of the

Stoke, Brentford and Swansea games I don’t think in any of them we’ve looked massively short. All three of the games we could have easily taken a point or more. So I’ve been pleased with that.

“The five out of ten is more for our points tally. But after four league games you don’t really gauge a team. The performances have been a little bit mixed but this is a team that notoriously has started really slowly in seasons.

“I think that’s because of predominantly the type of players we have. We’re a big strong team and sometimes a few of those players might need five, six, seven games to get into their stride.

“Of course they’re going to get those games very, very quickly after the international break because the frequency ramps up a little bit.”

After only a three-week break this summer, Millwall’s squad have been given an extended

rest with the next game not until October 17.

Rowett added: “It’s something that we planned initially. You can look at it a couple of different ways. You can say we’re early in the season so we can do lots and lots of work.

“Or you can say we’ve only had three weeks off and in my opinion part of performing over a long period, particularly over Christmas when the games are absolutely hectic, is that when you can get a breather mentally as well as physically it is important.

“So what we’re trying to do is use these international breaks to give the players a little bit of recovery time and then we’ll get back to work. Ultimately it’s about making sure that three weeks off doesn’t become a problem three or four months into the season.

“That’s how we see it. Everyone will see it in different ways. We’ve got four, five days recovery and then we’ll be straight back at it in the build-up to Wycombe which is obviously an important game.”

It’s good to have a guy like that giving you feedback, it gives you that little 10 per cent extra when you’re playing.

“Jed Wallace sent me a message the other day saying he was watching my games, that I was doing brilliantly and to keep it up.

“It’s always good to hear back from the lads.”

McNamara has spent his whole career at Millwall, but had no doubts about giving it a go north of the border.

“I was training with the first team during the summer but I didn’t know what the plans were for the season,” he explained. “I hadn’t spoken about it. I wanted to keep my head down and try to play my way into the first team.

“After one training I got a call from the under-23s manager [Kevin Nugent] and he said Callum Davidson is interested in you. I said, ‘that would be brilliant’. You think, ‘Scottish Prem, Celtic, Rangers’. I had a little think about it and within a week I’d moved up there, was training, and we had a game against Hibernian a day after I got there.

“Last season I was at Newport and that was a bit of a distance, but nothing compared to Scotland. I looked at the situation and thought, ‘it’s very far, if I’m not going to play it’s not going to be ideal’.

“But then you’ve just got to think positively, that you’re going to play. And that’s what’s happened so far. I’ve loved every minute of it.”

Millwall have until Friday week to add to the signings of Ryan Woods, Mason Bennett, Troy Parrott and Scott Malone in the summer.

Rowett wants another attacker with Parrott set to be out until around midNovember.

moves for Liverpool striker Liam Millar and Tranmere winger Corey Blackett-Taylor.

The £2.5million and £1.5million wage caps in League One and League Two mean fewer clubs there can afford to sign players from Championship teams, with the knock-on effect that a club like Millwall can’t free up space in their squad. Add to that the financial impact on clubs’ transfer budgets with no match-day income.

The Lions would like to move on Jiri Skalak as he is currently well out of the first-team frame.

The returns of Parrott and midfielder Billy Mitchell next month will add two more players to a relatively light squad.

Rowett was asked how he predicts the final week of the window going.

“I see it being slow because everybody is struggling to move players on,” Rowett said. “And because clubs are struggling to move players on no one wants to let players out.

“It’s made the market a little bit of a stalemate. So as much as I’d anticipate wanting to do little bits I think it’s very difficult to do that.

“That’s how I see this market at this particular point in time.”

Lions call off stopper search

“We want to take our time,” Rowett said. “It was very unfortunate timing for us to lose our head of recruitment in the middle of a transfer window.

“But what I think is very difficult to do is to get someone in instantly who’s the right long-term fit for what we’re planning to do. And for the new person to be able to jump straight into what we want as a team, it doesn’t work like that. It takes a while to build up that understanding.

“It’s something that we’re looking at. We probably won’t rush into it this window because I don’t think there’s much point. It will be the next window when we might do that.”

Fielding, 32, hasn’t played a full 90 minutes for the senior side since he joined in the summer of 2019, but the former Bristol City stopper has made a successful return from long-term injury for the under-23s.

Lions boss Gary Rowett was monitoring the stopper market as he weighed up whether the club needed back-up for Bialkowski if Fielding broke down. Youngsters Joe Wright and Ryan Sandford have yet to play a senior game.

Rowett hopes for “a bit of fortune” for Fielding, which would free up funds that would have been spent on a goalkeeper’s wages for other priority areas.

“It was always one that we were looking at before Frankie had started training,” Rowett said. “The reason we weren’t desperate and the reason we didn’t dive in with anything was because imminently we knew that we could end up with three senior keepers and two young keepers.

“That’s where we stand at the moment. Of course, Frankie’s not quite match fit, not quite match sharp because he’s missed a lot of football.

“He’s played under-23 football and we’re trying to get his fitness that way. We’re more than happy – touch wood – that it will save us having to go into the market, certainly short term.

“We’re quite pleased with that and hopefully Frankie can have a bit of fortune and stay injury-free.”
