Kieron Williams vows to make sure ‘prosperity is shared by all’ in Southwark

Southwark’s new council leader has vowed to make sure “prosperity is shared by all,” as he unveiled his top team to battle a series of unprecedented challenges at the town hall.

Labour’s Cllr Kieron Williams was formally elected leader of the town hall at a meeting last week, taking over the helm from Cllr Peter John, who had led the authority for a decade.

Vowing to raise living standards across the borough during his leadership, Cllr Williams

said: “Being appointed the leader of our council is the honour of my life. Southwark is a truly amazing borough, within a few square miles we have a taste of everything the planet has to offer.

“Everywhere I look in our borough I see the chance to make it an even better place for everyone who lives here, to raise prosperity, and to make sure that prosperity is shared by everyone in our borough.”

Among the top priorities for the Williams administration would be stopping the spread of coronavirus, ending homelessness in the borough, and cleaning up Southwark’s air, he pledged.

He admitted, however, the scale of the task facing the new administration – economic recession, a pandemic, and years of squeezed budgets – was an “unprecedented challenge.”

Liberal Democrat opposition leader, Cllr Nick Johnson, congratulated Cllr Williams and his deputy Jasmine Ali on their election – but warned them that they faced some “ugly choices.”

“In some ways, I don’t envy the task either of you face,” he said, adding: “Less money in the pot and a major financial deficit for the council is almost certain.

“Some ugly choices will have to be made,” he said. “I don’t know what ugly choices you will choose to make Cllr Williams.

“Perhaps it’s cutting services, perhaps it’s raising taxes… these are difficult choices.

So my sympathy goes to you because I don’t think you have an easy task ahead of you.”

He urged the council properly to consult residents if austerity measures were imposed, and to “play the long game.”

“Let’s use Covid as the catalyst for a green revolution in Southwark,” he said.

A new top team was also unveiled at the town hall, with previous cabinet members Cllrs Richard Livingstone and Victoria Mills stepping down from their posts.

baffled by Plaques to dictators in park

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Plaques dedicated to the memory of dictators such as Kim Jong-il and Colonel Gaddafi mysteriously appeared on benches in a Dulwich park last week.

The plaques on benches in Goose Green are dedicated to the North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il; Colonel Gaddafi of Libya; Romania’s Nicolae Ceascecu; and the Russian revolutionary Peter Kropotkin.

Each of them has a bizarre tag-line.

Kim Jong-il’s plaque reads: “Kim Yongil, 1942-2011. Always preferred George Lazenby.”

A plaque for Colonel Gadaffi, who was killed after his capture by a militia in 2011, has the barmy caption: “have i told you lately that i love you?”

Another is for the communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu, who was executed by firing squad on Christmas Day, 1989. His memorial plaque states: “1918-1989. Do ya think I’m sexy?”

itself to Russian anarchist Peter Kropotkin, which has a tagline from an advert for the cleaning product, Cillit Bang. It reads: “Bang! And the dirt is gone!”

Baffled park-goers in Goose Green did not appear to know much about the plaques when asked by a News reporter on Saturday afternoon.

One woman, who had been sitting on a bench dedicated to Kropotkin, was unaware of the anarchist, and had thought he was a deceased local whose family members had donated a plaque.

Another person had stopped to take a photo of a plaque dedicated to Ceascecu, because of its bizarre tagline, but did not know who he was.

Asked why he thought the plaque was there, he said: “I don’t know, it is one of those modern art things, like a Banksy?”

Mystery surrounds the plaques – but this is not the first time plaques dedicated to despots have been spotted in London.

In 2018, a plaque dedicated “in loving memory” of Saddam Hussein was spotted in Wanstead, east London.

Peanuts: cracking the case at Evelina

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A boy who is severely allergic to peanuts can now safely eat up to seven of them because of a breakthrough trial at the Evelina Children’s Hospital.

James Redman, 12, was diagnosed with the severe allergy at three years old, and took part in the ARTEMIS trial, the largest

ever trial into peanut allergies.

He was given ever-increasing amounts of peanut protein over more than two years.

It now means he can tolerate the equivalent of seven peanuts, meaning he’s less likely to have a severe reaction in future.

His mum, Zoe, said the result had taken a huge weight off the family’s shoulders.

“Before he was diagnosed he had a severe reaction when he was three,” she said.

“I was feeding him a well-known brand of curry sauce, which contained three percent peanut.

“He was immediately sick and within a few seconds his eyes were streaming, he

started wheezing and his breathlessness was becoming worse by the second. He was going into anaphylactic shock and was taken straight to A&E. “Thankfully the doctors were able to treat it with steroids and nebulisers, but it was an extremely scary experience and our first encounter of this life threatening allergy.

“James hasn’t had a serious reaction since then but we were told that the next reaction was likely to be worse than the one before, so we were very concerned.”

The Redmans, who live in East Sussex, had to travel to the Evelina every fortnight

for James to take part.

The study recruited nearly 200 children and young people aged four to seventeen, and showed that increasing small amounts of peanut protein built up tolerance compared to a placebo.

“It’s great that the study had such a good outcome for James and was lifechanging for many of our families,” said Professor George du Toit, the study’s lead investigator.

“However, it should not be done without medical supervision, as a small number of children did have a reaction to the peanut protein and required medical treatment.”

man jailed for drinking at king’s cross

The Old Kent Road resident had been barred from the area

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk An Old Kent Road man who was barred from drinking around King’s Cross has been jailed for being drunk outside the station.

John Coffey, 45, was slapped with a Criminal Behaviour Order by Westminster Magistrates in August, which banned him from entering

the King’s Cross area, and from drinking booze in public in Islington or Camden.

But just a month later, on September 7, Coffey was spotted by an officer on patrol outside King’s Cross station.

Now he must serve eight weeks in prison for breaching the order, and pay a £128 fine after another court hearing.

Coffey approached the copper,

and started speaking with a slurred voice. His breath smelt of alcohol, say the British Transport Police, and he had a half-bottle of whisky, which he carried on drinking despite being asked to stop.

When cops undertook checks on Coffey, they found out about the order - so they arrested him for breaking it.

BTP Police Sergeant, David Underwood, said: “The conditions in

Coffey’s Order were clear; he wasn’t to be in the area and certainly wasn’t to be there drinking alcohol.

“BTP will continue to deal with anti-social behaviour robustly, ensuring Orders such as Coffey’s are enforced.”

However, Sergeant Underwood added that the primary purpose of the police operation was to “house and support” people like Coffey.

Homelessness on the rise as ‘second wave’ takes hold katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark’s politicians are calling on the government to extend its homelessness support as the COVID-19 ‘second wave’ takes hold, after new figures showed that rough sleeping increased by 26 per cent in Southwark between April 2019 and March of this year.

The statistics, published by the Greater London Authority, show that in the twelve-month period, 548 rough sleepers were bedding down in the borough - a sharp rise mirrored across London as a whole where rough sleeping was up by a fifth. In total, more than 10,000 rough sleepers recorded across London.

But during the lockdown huge progress was made, with Sadiq Khan, councils and the government coming together offering targeted support with the help of private landlords and companies – including 4,000 homeless people offered emergency accommodation in hotels.

“We are facing a recession and a potential second wave of the pandemic, we need to act now to protect those who are vulnerable.

“The good news is that we have recently seen what can be done when the government works collaboratively with the mayor and local authorities on this issue.

“During lockdown, the ‘everyone in’ scheme provided emergency accommodation to thousands of vulnerable Londoners.

“But over the past few months, in response to COVID, we have seen what is possible with the political will.

“Southwark’s homelessness service has supported 600 rough sleepers into safe homes over this time, but we echo the GLA’s real concerns about the looming homelessness crisis, with our waiting list for housing growing too.

“It is abundantly clear that the government must address the lack of support for those with no recourse to public funds and for people now being evicted in the private sector, so that we can help more vulnerable people over the coming months, and prevent more people from becoming homeless.

“Southwark has an excellent track record in preventing and tackling homelessness and is a trailblazer authority of the Homelessness Reduction Act. “However this comes at a cost and the government must now commit to providing the long-term support required to end rough sleeping for good.”

‘pan of oil starts peckham blaze’

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A drink-driving copper attached to the Southwark and Lambeth branch of the Met would have been fired if he hadn’t already resigned, the force has said.

A disciplinary hearing for former officer PC Antony Pearce concluded a verdict of gross misconduct on Friday.

Pearce had been arrested on July 20, 2019 for drink-driving. The following month, he pleaded guilty at Hastings Magistrates' Court to driving a vehicle over the drink-drive limit, according to the Met. He was convicted of an offence of driving a motor vehicle whilst exceeding the prescribed limit of alcohol. The court ordered him to pay a £390 fine, a victim surcharge of £50, and banned him from holding a driving licence for twenty months.

The officer resigned from the force on January 25.

The Met said: “The outcome in this matter was proven at gross misconduct at a hearing on Friday, 18 September and had he remained a serving officer he would have been dismissed.”

Firefighters were called to the firstfloor home on Monday afternoon, September 22, at 1.26pm, and had the blaze under control around an hour later.

A woman had left the building before the brigade arrived and was taken to hospital by paramedics.

Investigators say the fire appears to have been sparked by an oil pan left on the hob.

A spokesperson said: "Fires are more likely to start in the kitchen than any

other room in the home.

"Cooking should never be left unattended on the hob or grill - if you have to leave the kitchen, turn off the heat.

"Chip pans and cooking with hot oil can be really dangerous and the risk increases when you start frying food more than once.

“All it can take is for you to become distracted for a few seconds and your cooking oil can quickly go up in flames.”

London Fire Brigade hopes the incident will be a timely reminder to others to follow safety advice in the kitchen including never leaving cooking unattended; always turning off the heat; never filling a pan more than a third with oil; and turning off the heat if the oil starts to smoke.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk An ambulance was delayed reaching a woman who had fallen from a fourth-floor window, residents say - because a council flower-bed blocks the road just seconds from her home.

The woman fell at around 2.30pm last Thursday afternoon in Lorrimore Square, Kennington. She is said to be recovering from her injuries.

But multiple residents around the area have told the News that her ambulance was delayed because roads surrounding Lorrimore Square have been blocked off by flower beds, as part of a ‘lowtraffic neighbourhood’ initiative from Southwark Council.

The Ambulance Service said all crews arrived within target time despite reports of delays, and that the first crew on scene did not report a delay.

But it dramatically admitted that Southwark’s low traffic neighbourhood schemes risk delaying crews giving lifesaving treatments to critically ill patients.

Emergency services being blocked off from reaching those in need is a common occurrence say those who live on Chapter Road, which leads to the square.

“The ambulance was really tearing up the road, it slowed down at the barrier and then had to do a quick three point turn,” said eye-witness Jaimie Todd.

The vehicle then went down a culde-sac, before turning around, finding another council-installed roadblock, and then eventually managing to get to the

scene minutes later, said the 45-year-old.

“The air ambulance arrived even as the other ambulance was still going around the houses,” he said.

He estimated there has been fourteen times where one roadblock, installed in July, had impeded the emergency services - so he has even drawn a map of directions for police and paramedics on the flower bed itself (see picture right).

“Changes to road layouts, traffic management schemes, and road closures all have the potential to impede our response to the most critically ill people and could delay life-saving

treatments or conveyance to the nearest emergency department,” an ambulance spokesperson admitted.

“We are in ongoing discussions with Transport for London and local authorities including Southwark to ensure emergency vehicle access is properly considered, and the impact of any changes monitored.”

Resident Giles Baleny can see the roadblock from his house. He said: “I regularly see police and ambulances being forced to turn around.

“They want to stop people going the most direct route, but some people have

to go the most direct route.

“I think it just speaks to the failure to properly consult on the process.”

Others have said they suspect the new road-blocks - rapidly installed during the pandemic - do not show up on sat-navs used by emergency services.

“Their system doesn’t seem to have been updated,” said Fiona McClean, who can also see the roadblock from her house. “The main thing is that it’s putting people’s lives at risk.”

Only one of those the News spoke to was opposed to the ‘low-traffic’ scheme, with most saying it needs to be adapted.

“I like the idea,” said Fiona, 60, who also witnessed the ambulance involved in the incident. “But it’s just badly implemented.”

Since the incident, several more ambulances have been stuck at the barrier, claimed resident Tristan Noakes, who has taken multiple videos of the stranded cars.

Southwark Council’s newly appointed head of transport, Cllr Catherine Rose, said: “We are deeply saddened by the news of this incident, and wish the woman a full and swift recovery.

“We will continue to work with the London Ambulance Service and all the other emergency services, as part of our planned ongoing review of schemes such as this, across the borough.”

Opposition Lib Dem councillor, Damian O’Brien, said the council had to listen more carefully to local residents when implementing low traffic neighbourhoods.

“The devil is in the detail,” said the Liberal Democrat transport spokesman. “Waltham Forest have been very successful while Hackney is suffering a severe push-back by some road users and a hostile atmosphere is developing.

“There is no point moving the problem to a new location – we want fewer car journeys, more environmentally-friendly forms of transport and for traffic to keep moving.

“These goals will only be aided by LTNs if local residents are listened to and that is what Liberal Democrats are always asking for.”

flower-bed, which they have been sending to the council since July.

that the details of the roadblocks had been shared with the emergency services, said Tristan Noakes, who has lived on Chapter

Road for fifteen years.

The News has taken stills from six of the videos, which appear to show a months-long pattern

of ambulances and fire brigade trucks being blocked from their intended route while responding to an emergency.

July 19 The flower-bed was installed on Chapter Road in early July. Less than two weeks later, residents film an ambulance which seemingly drives up to the roadblock and then turns around again.

September 18 July 24 A day later, firefighters get stuck at the barrier and are forced to ask residents for directions on how to navigate their way around the streets - despite having their lights flashing for an emergency.

Another video appears to show an ambulance struggling to navigate the road which has been blocked off by Southwark Council’s lowtraffic scheme.

The following day, just hours later, the same appears to happen again to yet another ambulance on the same road.

The day an ambulance was reportedly delayed by the scheme in responding to a woman falling from a fourth-floor, an ambulance responding to an emergency is filmed driving up to the road-block and then quickly making a u-turn and coming back down the road.

More than 6,000 people responded to an online survey of Southwark’s streetscape which asked them to highlight areas where their commute, via walking or cycling, was now extra difficult due to social distancing rules.

Packaged as temporary changes due to emergency Covid-19 legislation, the new layouts aim to help keep people two metres apart and walk or cycle safely into the office or shops.

But the initiatives were in the works well before the pandemic due to the ongoing challenge of tackling air pollution, congestion and the impending climate crisis.

Although you would be hard pressed to find a driver in London who doesn’t want fewer cars on the roads too, the implementation of the scheme has been marred by a series of blunders - leaving even supporters scratching their heads at how far it has gone wrong.

Changes include closing off side streets in Walworth, creating a car free ‘square’ in Dulwich Village and pedestrianising Peckham Rye, all with the aim of avoiding residential

streets becoming rat runs.

Residents on the Brandon Estate were left with just one point of exit via John Ruskin Street with no right turn, meaning going all the way up to Elephant and Castle to get back onto Walworth Road.

Meanwhile the main roads that have been left open - including already heavy traffic routes such as the South Circular - are suffering tailbacks.

Southwark is not the only London borough to implement the scheme to varying degrees of success.

Petitions have been launched against the changes in nearly every borough affected, including neighbouring Lambeth.

There more than 1,400 have called for a new consultation, arguing the scheme needs to have “a full public consultation in each area including provision of modelling data and metrics to show they have addressed potential pitfalls, including unwanted traffic displacement and full details of how the effects of any changes will be evaluated with a detailed timescale.”

A similar scheme was scrapped in Wandsworth after complaints over increased congestion and pollution and Bromley Council has even made threats of legal action to its counterpart in Croydon - claiming road changes over the border had pushed traffic and pollution into its own borough with no advance warning.

London Bridge could be closed PERMANENTLY to cars

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Cars will continue to be banned from using London Bridge for the majority of the time under proposals announced by TfL.

The bridge had been closed to general traffic since March because of essential repair works being carried out. Repair works finished on September 11, and the restrictions had not applied to motorbikes, buses and taxis.

Now cars are being banned from using the bridge between 7am and 7pm, Monday to Friday.

“Enabling more people to walk and cycle is absolutely vital to London’s recovery from coronavirus, which is why we are extending some of the existing restrictions to London Bridge access as part of our Streetspace programme,” said TfL’s Sam Monck.

“Between 07:00 and 19:00 from Monday to Friday, only people walking and cycling, buses, taxis and motorcycles will be permitted to use the bridge, making it easier for people to access the new walking and cycling corridor to Shoreditch.”

The move has drawn fury from those in the logistics sector, such as lorry drivers.

Logistics UK which represents the sector said it would be a devastating blow to economic recovery.

“Logistics businesses and their staff were hailed as heroes during the pandemic for working tirelessly to keep the nation stocked with the essential goods it needs, now, when we need government to support us on our road to financial and operational recovery, it is disappointing it has taken such a destructive measure,” said the organisation’s Natalie Chapman.

“Many logistics businesses are still struggling with cash flow issues and

major disruption to operations; this additional burden – which will drive up costs for companies significantly – could be the final straw that breaks the camel’s back.

“And by implementing the closure at such short notice, it will cause businesses immediate, serious challenges with routing and scheduling.

“While the closure is a temporary measure, TfL did not consult with logistics businesses on its plans; we will be campaigning to ensure the scheme is not made permanent.”

TfL admitted that it was not undertaking a formal consultation on the scheme.

However, it said it would be keeping the measure “under review.”

In addition, left turns from London Bridge into Duke Street Hill for general traffic will be banned, excluding buses, cycles and taxis. This will apply all times of the day throughout the week.

CPZ extended in Bermondsey after council says there were no objections

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Extended operating hours for a controlled parking zone in the heart of Bermondsey have been approved by the council.

The so-called ‘CPZ G’ covers the area between the river and the railway line running parallel with Jamaica Road, including parts of the Four Squares and Kirby Estates.

Currently parking restrictions are in force from Monday to Friday, 8.30 to 6.30. But now the hours will be extended to 11pm every day of the week.

The move is due to come into force on October 19.

One resident of the Four Squares estate, which is covered by the area, slammed the change, saying he felt as if residents had not been properly consulted.

“The council have got to put it to the people,” he said. “They say, ‘there was a vote taken’, well when was the vote

taken?

“Was there just ten people instead of asking the people that live around here? My grandkids won’t be able to come down without having to pay to park.”

A letter sent to residents by Southwark Council admits that “no representations were received” on a consultation in May into the extension of the hours of the CPZ. However, officials say that earlier consultations had shown a majority support for amended hours, and a consultation in 2019 showed that the extended hours were the most popular choice.

“As we received no objections to the changes, we are now in a position to commence with the installation of the parking zone,” states the letter.

Anyone wishing to park in the area from October 19 from 8.30am to 11pm will need to buy a parking permit, the letter adds.

A permit costs £125 for twelve months.

Testing centres ‘nearly empty’ while children are forced off school

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Children in Southwark are being forced off school because of a lack of tests, even though nearby testing centres are largely empty.

Despite having missed months of education over lockdown, and returning only to classes in full this month, some children are forced to stay at home because it is impossible to tell if their symptoms are coronavirus or not.

The council’s new deputy leader, Cllr Jasmine Ali, (pictured) blasted the government’s handling of testing capacity, saying the Johnson government had “squandered the summer.”

“They promised us ‘track and trace’, and they just haven’t delivered it,” said Cllr Ali, who also has responsibility for schools. “Parents and schools have been working brilliantly together, but the government has let us down. Parents are literally calling me up, asking if I’ve got any tests kicking around the town hall.”

Staff are also affected, with the council aware of cases of school staff asked to travel to Leicester to get a test, she said.

Others, as was the case in previous weeks, were told by the government’s online tool to go to Scotland. “It’s shocking really, I’m so angry about this,” she said.

One frustrated parent who spoke to the News summed up the situation even more bluntly: “It’s a s**t show.”

Lydia Bell, 44, has a daughter aged nine who attends a primary school in Peckham. Speaking last Friday, Ms Bell had spent “every waking moment” in the previous 48 hours trying to get a test for her daughter. “I’m having to drive around south London with a child who’s not feeling well,” she said. “It’s a joke.”

The mother had been given a test through the government’s online booking tool for a centre in Catford, but was not emailed a code needed to prove the booking - a glitch which affected numerous people that day.

“They turned away 200 cars, it was complete pandemonium, nobody was sent their codes,” she said.

Desperate for a test, she then went to the large

testing site at Greenwich’s O2, armed with a code for an address in Scotland - a workaround others have successfully tried in previous weeks. It did not work.

“It was empty, there was nobody there,” she said.

“They’ve got capacity, but they’re turning people away.

The guy on the door, he said, ‘it’s really wrong, I feel sorry for you.’”

The problem is affecting a substantial number of pupils.

The principal of Bermondsey’s Compass School, Marcus Huntley, estimated that around five per cent of his students had been forced to stay at home explicitly because parents can’t get a test.

“There has to be that quick turnaround of testing,” he said. “Parents are struggling with navigating the guidance in terms of a continuous cough and a temperature. It’s just understanding how this differs from a case of the sniffles.”

Meanwhile, a mobile testing centre in Burgess Park stands largely empty despite heavy demand for tests, because appointments can only be pre-booked online.

But in a Catch-22, the government tool regularly doesn’t allow locals to book a test.

Southwark’s Cllr Evelyn Akoto, who leads on public health, said: “Went in to speak with staff at the Burgess Park test centre, as to why there’s no one there, and as I thought. The government has intervened and as of last Sunday you are not able to walk in - you now have to book an appointment via a website that can’t keep up with demand.”

She added that staff at the centre were “equally frustrated at the absolute farce of a system.”

The government has pledged to get a handle on the testing crisis, but health secretary Matt Hancock has warned it could take weeks to fix.

Dido Harding, the head of NHS Track and Trace, said last week none of the government’s modelling had predicted a surge of demand in September.

“I don’t think anybody was expecting to see the real sizeable increase in demand that we’ve seen over the last few weeks,” she told a committee of MPs. “So none of the modelling was expecting that, and that’s why we all need to think really hard about how we prioritise the use of these tests.”

two schools have reported confirmed cases of coronavirus

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey primary school has had a confirmed case of coronavirus, forcing a “small number” of children to self-isolate.

Phoenix Primary, on Marlborough Grove, sent a letter to parents about the confirmed case on Monday, saying children who had been in close, prolonged contact with that person would need to stay off school for fourteen days.

The letter, from headteacher Simon Assig, states: “We have been advised by Public Health England that there has been a confirmed case of COVID-19 within the school.

“We know that you may find this concerning, but we are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health England.”

One concerned parent of a child at Phoenix, who did not wish to be named, said: “Parents are not always honest, so schools have no way of knowing if families have been abroad and are supposed to be self isolating.

“I don’t think the schools are checking this as they should be.

“I think schools should also be checking temperatures as children enter schools. This may seem extreme to some people but it’s a measure that other places such as Chessington are taking and they have hundreds of visitors a day.”

Separately, a school in Peckham Rye, which

provides for disabled children, has also confirmed a coronavirus case among a member of staff.

Tuke School, a secondary school, told parents in a letter dated September 17: “The staff member is asymptomatic.

“They did not attend school when they were infectious, so it is highly unlikely they would not have passed on the infection in school.

“I have followed Public health England guidance and have taken advice from the London Coronavirus Response team and they have advised that the risk is low.

“There is no need to keep your child away from school or school activities because of this individual’s illness.”

One parent who sends their child to the school, said they were concerned about the case.

“I’m just concerned about the lack of safety within schools of disability,” they said. “No visors, no masks, no social distancing as staff need to be hands on.

“Most of all if this person was asymptomatic, showing no symptoms, how does the school know when was their infectious period?”

They claimed: “Before this staff was isolating she could have already spread the virus. And why has this school not been closed for a few days to be cleaned and disinfected?”

Phoenix Primary and Tuke School did not respond to requests for comment before going to press.

‘aylesham centre plans need proper debate’

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Businesses and residents in Peckham are appealing for the Aylesham Centre’s developer to take its plans for three new tower blocks back to the drawing board.

More than 1,600 people have signed a petition calling on Tiger Developments to scrap its designs and start again with more input from a community campaigners say has been largely ignored, with one business owner describing them as a 'slap in the face'.

Concerns are based around not only the specifics of the plans; including details of ‘out of character’, high-rise buildings and affordable housing, but also the way in which the ‘inadequate’ consultation has been handled.

The News understands the developer is hoping to submit its proposal to Southwark Council’s planning committee by the end of this month.

A coalition of groups has come together under the banner of ‘Aylesham Community Action’, including heritage group Peckham Vision and businesses from the Bussey Building, calling for Tiger to postpone.

Tigers’ plans include three blocks of eight, eleven and twenty storeys high.

To put it into context, this would mean a tower block fourteen storeys higher than Frank’s Café on the site of the current Aylesham Centre.

The shopping centre closes today (Thursday, September 22) before the demolition job and five-year regeneration scheme begins, with new temporary retail space at Castle Square launching on Saturday.

As the News reported last week, developer Delancey and campaigners are still locked in a bitter dispute over support for traders.

Up the Elephant claims around 40 business owners will be expelled from the shopping centre having not been given adequate support.

Delancey claims all ‘qualifying’ businesses have been relocated already, or

the News: "Tiger Development have just conducted a very poor consultation on a major redevelopment of Peckham town centre at the worst time - during August the holiday season, and when all of us are still coping with the impact of COVID-19.

“It is essential for good planning that they give more time to have a good consultation. We want them to talk with us in Aylesham Community Action about the way that consultation can be completed properly."

Mickey Smith, the director and founder of the Chronic Love Foundation, which runs the CLF Art Café in the Bussey Building, the South London Soul Train night and Chronic Fonk Records, said he believed the current designs would “literally scar, obliterate and dominate the skies of Peckham”.

“To be clear, we and most people in Peckham have no problem with the idea of a new community-sensitive build across the Aylesham Centre; one that improves the area, taking into consideration what Peckham is and wants to be,” he added.

“However, this ‘plan’ does not to do that, far from it, and frankly put is an absolutely slap in the face.”

“Many of us are an older demographic, with limited employment opportunities, and families to support.”

Labour’s Southwark and Lambeth assembly member, Florence Eshalomi, and the Southwark Liberal Democrats, are backing the traders’ proposals.

Southwark Lib Dem leader Nick Johnson was one of those to reject Delancey’s application at the planning committee in 2018, two years and three deferrals after proposals were first submitted.

“Many of these traders are micro businesses and can’t afford increased rents in the new schemes,” he said.

“When gathered together they form a clear community and place that people knew they could come for authentic Latin American and other ethnicity products and food.

“Now they are dispersed and a community destroyed.”

Councillor Maria Linforth-Hall has given hands-on support to many businesses affected by the regeneration, most recently helping Maritza Medina Sierra, from Colombia relocate her beauty salon to a new home in St George’s Road.

She said she is ‘wholeheartedly’ in favour of the traders’ proposal.

“For these traders, demolishing the centre will take away their livelihood, their savings and their dreams,” she said.

“Many are my dear friends and are currently all under one roof, and will now

have to disperse across London to find new homes.”

A petition was handed to City Hall last Friday, September 18, to Eshalomi, who has now asked the mayor to intervene, telling this paper: “The Latin American business community is part of the fabric of our local area, and we all want to see that continue.

“With many traders still at risk of losing their livelihoods – in the middle of a pandemic – it’s important we explore all feasible options of support.”

The three billion pound scheme was given the green light by Sadiq Khan in December 2018. Campaigners hoped the mayor would call in the scheme and, as the News has reported, have launched successive legal challenges in the hope of improving the social housing offer.

Although the closure was postponed by several months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the extra time appears to have done little to reach a rapprochement between the developer and campaigners.

A socially distanced protest will be held at 5pm on the roundabout on today, with Up the Elephant and its coalition of supporters promising they won’t give up their fight.

Alongside retail, the regeneration comprises of a new London College of Communication campus, 979 new ‘build to rent homes’ – of which 116 will be at social rent – a new ticket hall for the northern line and is said to be critical for the longhoped-for Bakerloo line extension.

The developer set up a website detailing its plans during the pandemic – but was unable to offer face-to-face meetings or a public exhibition.

Its website says the new centre will “offer a greater choice of new shops and a new Morrisons store, new bus routes and improved connections and importantly provides the opportunity to deliver much needed new homes, all within a better people focused environment.”

The scheme will include over 900 highquality new homes with a 'target' of 35 per cent being 'affordable'.

If followed to the letter, this means 70 per cent would be social housing, with the remaining third marketed at 80 per cent or under of market rent, or rented or sold to people with household incomes between £47,290 and £64,863.

Other details include better pedestrian access and transport links as well as environmentally friendly materials and energy sources such as solar panels, green roofs, and a series of landscaped courtyards with more than 40 per cent more trees and shrubs.

A joint statement issued by Delancey and Southwark Council described the campaigners’ figures as ‘misinformation’.

Delancey says 79 independent traders qualified for the relocation programme, and 64 applications received were ‘valid’.

Forty of these have been relocated.

It says the remaining eighteen traders include those which had multiple locations across the centre, and five that had either moved outside the area or closed ‘of their own accord’. Some traders are also subletting from others.

Delancey says that taking these into account, it leaves eight market traders and two kiosk owners who are still without new stalls or premises.

If they are unable to secure a new lease elsewhere they will be given £8,000 each from the relocation fund.

Latin Elephant says its own research showed as of 2018 around 130 traders were operating within the shopping centre and in its outdoor market.

Not all of them were eligible for support due to where they fell in relation to the ‘red line’ of the development.

The group, which has profiled those turned down for new premises or unable to find appropriate space, has now issued an angry rebuttal to Delancey’s claims, arguing: “Our research has been widely documented, and it was carried out independently with an effort to enforce transparency and accountability.

“This has been discussed several times with Southwark Council and Delancey.

“It is unacceptable to see the closure of the Shopping Centre with many traders still without relocation, so we will continue our advocacy work in a constructive way to support the local community."

Jerry Flynn, on behalf of Up the Elephant, described the relocation options given to businesses as ‘hopelessly inadequate’ and dismissed the £8,000 payment as “nothing like what is needed to re-establish a business built up over many years and little compensation for the loss of a livelihood.”

A group of stall holders are now lobbying for a new market stalls to be added to the area including by the Faraday Memorial, the railway arches by Archer Street, the new Elephant Arcade and at the bottom of Perronet House; including on TfL and The Arch Company owned land.

In a letter to Sadiq Khan sent on August 17, the independent traders wrote: “We are currently in a desperate situation.

“Many of us have worked in the Elephant and Castle for over fifteen years, and have

Paedophile jailed for eleven years crimes.

Graham Brightwell, of Peabody Hill, SE21, was sentenced to eleven years behind bars at an Isleworth Crown Court hearing yesterday.

He had pleaded guilty to one count of attempted buggery and six counts of indecent assault, one of which was a multiple incident charge.

Brightwell committed the sick offences against two boys more than 30 years ago, the court heard.

The historic offences were first reported to police in September 2017.

One abuse victim told police that the abuse had gone on for eight years, only stopping when he turned sixteen.

Brightwell, 69, was arrested in April 2018, and pleaded guilty to the crimes on June 3 of this year.

“Brightwell took advantage of his

young victim’s vulnerability, sexually abusing them on numerous occasions when the opportunities presented themselves,” said Detective Constable Graham Blake.

“I would like to praise the victims’ courage in reporting what happened to them to police.

“A serious crime committed 30 years ago is still a crime. While investigations into non-recent sexual offences can be challenging, we have specially trained officers who will follow up all lines of inquiry, and seek to prosecute when the evidence will support it.”

Middle-aged man fights for his life after a ‘fight’ in SE1

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A man is battling for his life after a ‘fight’ outside the Sainsbury’s on The Cut last Wednesday night.

Cops were called to the scene outside the Sainsbury’s at around 8.46pm to reports of two men fighting.

A man, aged 42, was originally not thought to be seriously injured, said Borough Commander Colin Wingrove, but he was taken to King’s College

months in prison, suspended for eighteen months for the theft at his Westminster workplace.

The 45-year-old must also undertake 80 hours of unpaid work and pay £2,000 in compensation after an Old Bailey hearing on Tuesday.

The court heard how Smith began stealing cash from the office safe

on December 4 last year. Over two weeks, after clocking off work, he would enter the office, unlock the safe and steal the cash.

He took a total of £6,855. On the final occasion, he also stole two bottles of posh Belvedere Vodka, worth £250 each.

On December 23, he failed to show up for work. After several phone calls, the court heard how he had answered and confessed to taking the money.

On Christmas Eve, staff checked the safe and found more than £6,000 was missing. Smith later handed himself into a police station near Cardiff, where he was staying.

Police transferred him over to the Met for an interview, who searched his London address. They found the two bottles of vodka – but none of the money.

CCTV showed Smith stealing from the safe nineteen times, including the two bottles of vodka.

John Scahill, who lives in the tower, said he was worried that by not having signs telling people to limit the number of people in lifts, residents and visitors might forget social distancing rules.

"It's just easier if we have those signs – it makes it less awkward and takes away any ambiguity when you're going up in the lift and you have to ask someone not to come in with you," he said.

"We're getting more and more cases in the area, and I just want to know the council are taking it seriously… they took the time to make a long document about how were they were approaching Covid, but what about practical steps like this?"

With an average of 21.6 cases per 100,000 people in the week up to September 10, Southwark is one of more than 20 London boroughs with coronavirus infection rates above the level at which the Government is imposing quarantine on travellers coming from foreign countries.

The borough's infection rate

increased from 16.9 in the week ending September 3, according to Public Health England.

In correspondence seen by the News, Mr Scahill repeatedly asked council officials for updates about when the signs would arrive, over a period of more than two weeks.

A council worker said the notices would be delivered "shortly" and Southwark would "rely on our residents taking a sensible approach".

But after the News made enquiries to the council this week, Mr Scahill was pleased to see coronavirus advice soon appear on Castlemead's notice boards.

Mr Scahill said he was "very happy to see clear information on keeping tenants safe and now hope that Southwark continues in its efforts so that we are all advised on how best to keep one another protected.”

A spokesperson for Southwark Council said: "We don’t have a definitive list of the considerable amount of signage we’ve produced in our response to Covid, but it’s always helpful to get residents’ feedback so we can consider such requests."

Home Secretary Priti Patel joins south London 'drugs raid'

The Home Secretary accompanied Met Police and Sussex Police officers in raid on a property in Brighton Terrace in Brixton in the early hours of the morning, last Wednesday week, September 16.

Police arrested a man suspected of running a heroin and crack cocaine dealing operation in Sussex from London.

Police say their search at the address is ongoing but have confiscated a phone they 'believe to be used to control a County Line and a quantity of suspected Class A drugs'.

Met Police Detective Chief Inspector Ant Jones said: “Every single day officers from the Met are working hand in glove with colleagues from other police forces to arrest those involved in running county lines routes from the capital into the counties.

“Operations like this have been so successful through the strong relationships between forces who are equally committed to stopping County Lines routes. Through this approach we are able to disrupt and dismantle these lines from the centre and protect the vulnerable children and adults who are often coerced into running substances

across the UK on behalf of these networks.

“This collaborative approach has enabled us to target and arrest County Lines criminals more than ever before. This activity will increase and intensify in the coming weeks as we continue to bring those responsible for this criminality to justice.”

Detective Chief Inspector Will Rolls of Sussex Police said: ”This is another example of the way we and other forces are working together with the Met and in our own communities, to target and disrupt dealers. We work relentlessly to target, investigate, arrest and prosecute drug dealers who cause harm in our local communities and exploit children and vulnerable adults.

“Police activity is only one part of the solution, we need to reduce the demand, prevent our children and young people being drawn into using drugs and support those addicted to these lethal substances. We are working collaboratively with partners from local authorities, charities, substance misuse use services, and schools to protect the public across Sussex.”

Ms Patel said: “I have made rolling up county lines drugs gangs an absolute priority. We have provided police with £25 million to tackle this exploitative trade, and I have today seen first-hand the impact of that investment.

“The police will continue having my full support in the fight to keep the public safe.”

Southwark fireworks cancelled due to Covid-19

The November display, which the council has put on in Bermondsey's Southwark Park for sixteen years straight, has fallen foul of the government's new rule banning group activities involving six or more people.

A spokesperson for the council said it was working to get smaller-scale

activities up and running as soon as possible.

Cllr Rebecca Lury, in her previous role as Southwark cabinet member for culture, leisure, equalities and communities, said: “It is with regret that we must cancel our 2020 fireworks show. The health and safety of our residents comes first and this cannot be guaranteed while working to current government guidelines and laws. We very much hope to be re-starting other small-scale local events shortly.”

The fireworks are usually free for all residents of the borough.

Southwark ranked among worst local authorities for access to green space

Staff from a Dulwich school have raised £13,000 and counting in memory of a student who died from a rare form of blood cancer.

Twenty teachers from The Charter School North Dulwich cycled 54 miles from London to Brighton on Saturday, September 19, to raise funds for research into new treatments.

Ruby Fuller (pictured) died in May this year just weeks after being told her cancer, which had been in remission, had returned.

She was first diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic non-Hodgkins lymphoma in July 2019, at just seventeen years of age, and underwent several rounds of gruelling radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and a stem cell transplant.

The funds will be donated to The Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group.

Mr Boyega is not believed to have been told about the new version by the company, and instead says he found out about it online.

Jo Malone said in a statement: "We deeply apologise for what on our end was a mistake in the local execution of the John Boyega campaign.

“John is a tremendous artist with great personal vision and direction.

The concept for the film was based on John’s personal experiences and should not have been replicated."

The company added that it "immediately" removed the local version and said: "We recognise that this was painful and that offence was caused. We respect John, and support our partners and fans globally.

"We are taking this misstep very seriously and we are working together as a brand to do better moving forward.”

Mr Boyega has been affected by marketing decisions directed at Chinese audiences before.

A Chinese version of a poster for the 2015 film Star Wars: The Force Awakens showed his character much smaller than in the original.

The report by environmental group Friends of the Earth uses Office for National Statistics and Natural England data to rank local authorities for the amount of green space – both private and public – within five minutes' walk for residents.

The study ranks areas in five possible categories. Areas where the average garden space is less than 57 square metres per resident and average public green space within five minutes' walk is less than nine square metres per resident fall into the lowest "E" category.

Unsurprisingly, local authorities in London and other major cities tend to have more neighbourhoods

in the lower categories. Southwark is ranked eighth-lowest of all local authorities in the UK, and fifth-worst in London behind Lambeth, Tower Hamlets, Haringey and Newham.

Of the 33 neighbourhoods the report defines in Southwark, 23 are in this category, while there are six in "D", one in "C" and three in "B". None are ranked in the best category.

Bromley is the best-rated borough in London, with seven neighbourhoods in the best category and just three in the worst.

Report author Paul de Sylva said: “For many of us lockdown exposed how critical quality outdoor space and nature is for our health and wellbeing. But our research shows just how much of a distant reality that is for millions of people across England who live in nature-deprived neighbourhoods.

"Everyone has the right to live in a healthy environment. Greener neighbourhoods, well insulated homes and high-quality cycling routes are some of the key parts of this."

The new report's finding come after research last year found the vast majority of Southwark residents were happy with the open space available to them.

The borough's parks were ranked the best in London by the Good Parks for London Report 2019.

The borough had 30 "green flag" parks – meaning parks that are wellmaintained and managed.

Survey data showed 95 per cent of residents in the borough were happy with the parks and open spaces in their area.

Cllr Richard Williams said at the time: "Our parks are at the heart of our communities and play host to some fantastic events throughout the year.

“As a central London borough where most people do not have their own garden it is particularly important for our residents to have access to excellent open spaces.”

Southwark Council has been contacted for comment in response to the Friends of the Earth report.

southwark angels Peckham engineer celebrated in MS photography exhibition An IT support engineer from Peckham is being featured in an online photography exhibition celebrating the achievements of people living with multiple sclerosis (MS), writes Simon Throssell...

Ramiro Rivas was twenty years old when he was diagnosed with MS, a neurological condition that affects approximately 130,000 people in the UK and is diagnosed in almost 7,000 people each year.

After his diagnosis, he suffered a bad relapse and was in bed unable to walk for eight months afterwards.

Trying to get around his house and grabbing onto the walls to move around was a huge weight for him.

Being a practical person by nature, he didn’t let this stop him completely and he began to think of new ways to improve himself.

“I thought about ways of overcoming it [the MS] in terms of ‘Okay, I need to do more exercise, I need to eat this or

I need to do other things in order to help myself.’

“I always tell myself: ‘Put your mind to it, you’ll do it.’ And I hope to build my career and not let the MS hold me back.”

Like many young professionals, Ramiro was furloughed from his job repairing IT computer systems and applications. He has found lockdown to be very different as he would usually be doing something outside rather than spending time at home.

He ventures outside for walks in the morning when he knows he’ll be able to keep his distance from people. He has also enjoyed reading and watching documentaries.

“I still do everything that most people say you [a person with MS] shouldn't be doing. And I still do it because I don't see MS as a restriction.

“I don't want it to be, ‘because I've got MS I can't do this’.”

With the future of his job uncertain, Ramiro has been searching for new

opportunities and is trying to remain his usual positive self through this challenging time.

“Never let yourself be held back by anything.

“A shock in your leg, or shock in your hand, the twitch in your eye, or a twitch in your mouth or your face going droopy. Just accept it and move on.

“That's how I found it, because ‘More to uS’ – as in: this happened to me and I carried on.”

The More to uS exhibition features photos and stories of nine people living with MS and their extraordinary and everyday achievements.

Each interview celebrates how they have overcome the challenges the condition brings in order to accomplish their personal goals.

Anyone aged eight to fifteen and living in the borough can apply to join his new ‘Fitness 4 Kids… by kids’ initiative.

Shane says he came up with the idea after realising that many young people want to become famous influencers and this was one way into encouraging more of them to get fit and healthy.

He has recorded four workouts of

ten to fifteen minutes with four young people already, including nine-yearold Amelia who absolutely smashed it.

They will be recorded with the help of a film crew and given one-on-one coaching from Shane while making the video.

“Kids listen to other kids and if we can somehow get them to talk about fitness and enjoy it, I think we can actually make a difference,” he told the News.

Southwark community groups urged to register for free supermarket food An organisation that provides free supermarket food to people in need has urged Southwark community groups to take advantage of its services.

Support for care leavers in Southwark Care leavers in Southwark are now being supported into training and work with the help of a ‘progression coordinator’ based at Southwark and Lewisham colleges.

The pilot project is a partnership between the Care Leaver Covenant - a pledge to support those leaving care made by companies and organisations - and education provider NCG, which runs seven further education colleges including in Southwark and Lewisham.

Annette Cast, principal at Southwark College, said: “We pride ourselves on supporting our students in their next steps to independence, whatever their background.

“We look forward to having a Progression Coordinator within Southwark College to offer tailored support to our care leaver students.”

FareShare works with chains like Tesco, Asda and Waitrose to get unsold food to thousands of charities and other local groups across the UK to be dished out to disadvantaged people in their areas.

One of the groups that partners with FareShare elsewhere in London is the Hindu Shree Jalaram Temple in Greenford.

Dr Mansukh Morjaria, a trustee at Shree Jalaram Temple, said: “Without the food we receive from Tesco and FareShare, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do.

"It has made a massive impact and it would be a struggle for us if we didn’t get the food.

"To date we have carried out 6,200 collections from Tesco stores and have fed more than 280,000 people in need, including rough sleepers, homeless people, the elderly, families in hardship, those in homeless hostels and homes, school children

during various holiday periods.

“We depend on the donations and it’s a big help to us. We can only do this because we have community support from people who visit the temple and from organisations like FareShare.”

Lindsay Boswell, Chief Executive at FareShare, said: “Through our FareShare Go scheme, we work closely with retailers to ensure that no good food goes to waste, and ends up on people’s plates instead of landfill.

“We know that there are thousands of people going hungry across the UK, and many frontline charities and community groups offering much needed support where they can. I would urge any organisation to sign up to FareShare Go and access free surplus food."

FareShare said it helped save enough food to make about 57 million meals last year, working with nearly 11,000 community groups.

Harry is the personal shopper extraordinaire

A kind-hearted Asda worker from Peckham has won praise for helping a blind customer do his shopping twice a week.

Michael Spooner, 55, goes in the Peckham branch of Asda at least twice a week and says he would be lost without the help of Harry Turner.

Harry helps Michael around the shop, picking items off the shelves for him, telling him about any special offers and even packing his bags.

Grateful Michael said: “Other staff members do help me, but Harry's the dude, he's the main man. We have a good relationship and I'd be lost without him.

"When you're blind you don't want any hassle when you go shopping, you want to get the shopping done quickly and that's what Harry does.

He makes it a hassle-free shopping experience for me. He's cool.

"When we go round the store we have a good chat and catch up on things. What blind people want is

routine. They want someone who understands you, can deal with you and cope with you.”

He said he wanted to thank Harry, a 25-year-old worker who has been at the supermarket giant for six years.

“He always asks for me when he comes in and he takes my arm and I guide him round,” he said.

“He has his list in his head and he just tells me what he wants and I pick them and put them in the basket. As I've been doing it for so long I know the things that he likes and dislikes.

"We get on really well and always have a chat as we go round whether it's about politics or funny stories.

“It's nice to get praise for helping, but I'm just doing my job. It does make you feel good about yourself though."

The manager of the branch, Shahinuz Zaman, has nominated Harry for a special internal award, saying: “Michael always compliments Harry's great service and we are all proud of him in store.”

Testing capacity has been cut by a fifth

I

t is now clear that Covid-19, which has already brought huge pain, loss and hardship to so many families, will have a significant and ongoing impact on our lives for the rest of this year and into next year.

With numbers of cases in the UK doubling in the last week or so, there is a real risk that the rising number of cases in young people will soon result in increasing infections in older people who are more vulnerable to the disease.

We are already beginning to see more people with coronavirus in our hospitals, having to receive lifesaving treatment in intensive care. NHS staff, care workers and other key workers are braced for a second wave that everyone had

hoped we would not have to endure.

In the earliest stages of the pandemic, it was clear that while we wait for a vaccine to be developed, an effective test, trace and isolate system, underpinned by a secure mobile phone app in which people could have confidence, would be essential to the task of keeping people safe whilst also allowing as much normality as possible.

It was also utterly predictable that when children returned to school in September after most had been away from the classroom for six months, the inevitable start of term cold season would result in an increase in people experiencing the coronavirus symptoms of fever and cough and an increase in

testing capacity would be needed.

Yet despite knowing exactly what was needed, Boris Johnson’s Tory government has let us down again and again.

Instead of working with local Public Health teams in boroughs across the country, the Tories have chosen to spend millions of pounds of public money on private contracts with companies that simply can’t deliver.

As a result, they have cut testing capacity in London in recent weeks by a fifth and I’ve lost count of the number of constituents who have contacted me because they can’t get the test they or their children need. Absurdly, some have been offered tests as far away as St Andrew’s in Scotland – a round trip of almost 500 miles.

As I write this article, we are still waiting for the roll-out of the much-vaunted mobile phone app.

It is an insult to the enormous sacrifices that residents across my constituency and across Southwark have made, and to the keyworkers like nurses, doctors, teachers, care workers, frontline council staff and delivery drivers that the Tories have allowed their dogmatic, ideological obsession with outsourcing and privatisation to override proven public health infection control techniques.

I know that my constituents and residents across Southwark will play our part in reducing coronavirus spread and keeping each other safe in the coming weeks, but we urgently need Boris Johnson and his Tory government to get a grip and provide a functioning test, trace and isolate system we can rely on.

t is an honour to be elected as Leader of Southwark Council. I’m grateful to Southwark News for giving me this regular opportunity to speak to you about the work we’re doing across our borough.

I love Southwark. We have so much to be proud of. Fantastic parks, schools, libraries and town centres. Our council estates that provide affordable homes in the heart of one of the world’s most expensive cities. World-leading cultural institutions, businesses and hospitals. Above all the brilliant people who live and work here.

However, I also see the things we need to change. Across our country, and in Southwark, a growing number of people are struggling to get by. London’s broken housing market has left people on ordinary incomes struggling to find a home they can afford. A decade of austerity under this government and the coalition before it has taken vital

resources out of our community.

As a Labour-run council, we have worked hard over the last decade to improve the lives of everyone in our borough. Helping thousands into jobs and apprenticeships.

Improving our schools and care services. Building new and better council homes, and so much more. All in the face of continuing cuts to our budget. As Leader, I want to work with everyone in Southwark to keep building a better future and unlocking the amazing potential I see in every part of our community.

Never has that potential been clearer than during this pandemic.

Seeing volunteers, frontline workers, public services, charities, faith groups and businesses all step up together has been truly inspiring. I want to thank you all for the part you have played. Your actions have shown incredible strength and resilience. We can all be proud of Southwark’s response.

Sadly the pandemic is far from over and our continued response to COVID-19 remains our top priority.

The national test and trace system is simply not working well enough, with the number of tests provided in Southwark down by 40 per cent last week Cases and hospital admissions are rising across London and much of the UK. The virus is spreading amongst all age groups, and we know it is not any milder than before. If action isn’t taken quickly, we risk seeing another dramatic rise in hospitalisations and, tragically, deaths.

I firmly believe that acting early, rather than having to impose more

stringent measures later, is the right thing to do to save lives and jobs. The national test and trace system is simply not working well enough, with the number of tests provided in Southwark down 40 per cent last week. This leaves no choice but to look at other measures to slow the spread of the virus. So I welcome the additional restrictions that have been introduced this week and that’s why I have joined the Mayor of London in calling for further targeted restrictions to help keep us all safe. It’s vital that we all play our part by following the rules, so we can help save lives and avoid the need for a full lockdown later.

As a council, we will continue to play our part. We have moved fast to put our own local contract tracing system in place. This new service will use local expertise from across the council to follow up confirmed cases of COVID-19 with whom the NHS Test and Trace Programme has not been able to make contact. We will also continue to do all we can to support local

Southwark Council leader residents and businesses through this difficult period, including supporting vulnerable residents who may need extra help.

Although COVID-19 is the most pressing and urgent issue we face, it is not our only challenge. The unequal impact of the pandemic on different communities has shone a light on wider inequalities and injustice in our society. My ambition as leader is to unite communities in Southwark so we can break down that inequality, and not just rebuild from the crisis, but build something better.

A Southwark where everyone has a home, where everyone can get a decent job, where we end our carbon emissions and where everyone is empowered to make the best of their life.

COVID-19 has made this a very difficult year, but I am determined to stay ambitious for our borough and all who live here. I look forward to working with you to continue to build a better future for the people of Southwark.

Stopping emergency vehicles is madness

N

ew ‘low traffic neighbourhoods’ must not stop the emergency services responding to calls quickly as possible.

This simple truth - that a flower bed blocking the road can’t be the thing which could stop someone receiving life-saving care - seems to have escaped Southwark Council.

This week we report how one single council roadblock in Chapter Street has been seen to stop ambulances and fire brigade crews responding to emergency calls, forcing them into u-turns.

Shockingly, in one case, multiple residents told us the roadblock delayed ambulance crews responding to a woman who fell from a fourth-floor window.

The service itself admitted that schemes like Southwark’s risk delaying urgent care to critical patients.

Residents have been raising the alarm, with video evidence, since July, when the scheme was first implemented.

Southwark says it will keep the roadblock under review to ensure access for emergency vehicles. We say: You’ve had three months.

What on earth is taking you so long?

This is not the only change under the ‘low

neighbourhood’ banner which appears to have been marred by blunders on the part of council officials.

Residents of the Brandon Estate have been left with one point of exit via John Ruskin Street, forcing them to go to Elephant and Castle to get to Walworth Road.

This bonkers route simply can’t be creating either fewer traffic jams or less pollution.

In other cases, residents have reported the Met being given the slip by criminals on mopeds - cars are blocked by the council flower beds. Mopeds are not.

Any low traffic neighbourhood can spark bitter debate. It can all too often be polarised: motorists vs cyclists, taxi drivers vs TFL, council vs lobby groups.

This is being played out all across London.

A similar scheme has been scrapped in Wandsworth, thousands have signed a petition against it in Lambeth, and in Lewisham, the council leader has pledged to review some of its initiatives following a backlash.

But wherever you stand - as a motorist, cyclist, pedestrian or all of the above - we hope access for emergency vehicles is one thing everyone can agree on.

Ramsay gets a taste of his own medicine

Celeb chef Gordon Ramsay, who has an outlet on SE1’s Union Street, has recently been criticised for selling £19 Full English breakfasts.

The famously sweary chef has rejected criticism for the tiny plate of food, calling fans who snapped pics of their more traditional Full Englishes: “Idiot sandwiches.”

But it seems the potty-mouthed chef was once given a taste of his own medicine.

According to the owners of Terry’s Cafe in Great Suffolk Street, Ramsay visited them for a Full English when filming his first TV series in 1998.

Terry swaggered over to the table once Ramsay had finished eating, and asked him how the hearty meal was. ‘Great’, responded Gordon. “Dad’s quick response was: ‘Great, now you can f**k off!’” says the cafe.

The 33-year-old has gone one better this week by breaking a world record for the most amount of Oreo cookies eaten in five minutes.

The Bermondsey-born competitive eater chomped down an impressive 141 biscuits in just five minutes.

It beats the previous unofficial world record of 78 by a country mile.

The secret, according to the organiser, appeared to be Max stuffing the biscuits into his mouth two at a time.

Top health job available at Southwark

A new role is up for grabs at Southwark Council: Director of Public Health. It’s a key role at any time, but given recent events, anyone putting in a bid for the job will face a hefty to-do list.

The listing makes no secret that whoever takes the role will have to hit the ground running.

“The role has never been more important than in response to the Covid pandemic, and in ensuring that in recovery we focus on disproportionate impact and health inequalities so that everyone has a great start to life and can live healthy and fulfilling lives,” it says.

It does however pay suitably handsomely for such a high-stakes position, with the advertised salary going up to £136,000.

Recently showcasing the popular musical Fanny and Stella, the Eagle pub’s Garden Theatre presents another lyrical performance with the musical Pippin, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor...

Written by 4-time Grammy winner and 3-time Oscar winner Stephen Schwartz in the ’60s, this new 2020 version directed by Steven Dexter, and complete with a cast of West End performers, maintains its Summer of Love vibe.

If You’re Going to San Francisco plays, burning incense fills the marquee set, tie-dyed sheets hang strewn alongside peace and love slogans, while the cast decked out in ‘60s psychedelia, flared jeans and headbands, dance hypnotically.

Audiences lulled by this ‘Flower Power’ ambience are soon reminded it wasn’t all Peace and Love.

Tension arrives in the form of main protagonist Pippin, (Ryan Anderson), son of King Charlemagne, whose dissatisfaction with life sends him on a mission to find his true purpose on this mortal coil. Reminding us, ‘What I’m looking for can’t be found in books’, Pippin then impresses audiences with a heartfelt rendition of ‘Corner of the Sky’. Aided by an adoring troupe of five groovy, hippie

travellers, Pippin is able to continue expressing his angst-ridden state via sharply choreographed dance

numbers and songs that indulge him on his road of self-discovery.

Pippin’s journey leads him into

clashes with his war-mongering father, King Charlemagne, (Dan Krikler) who believes ‘war is a

science’. After first gaining power Pippin makes some attractive laws banning taxes and handing out land to the poor - which he later reneges on. But with a hint of smug selfobsession, he belts out an incredible version of ‘When you’re extraordinary you do extraordinary things’, singing ‘someone who is extraordinary like me’.

Embroidered into this musical tale are elements of magic, sex, murder, and intrigue, that all benefit from the casting of Joanne Clifton, winner of Strictly Come Dancing, whose confidence and versatility as an actor/ dancer radiates throughout. One moment she is Pippin’s savvy mother Estrada, next, a cheeky grandma full of mischievous devilment.

Impressive singing, incredible dancing and a cast of varied characters make for a musical treat.

Howerd’s End is in Camberwell A new theatre in Camberwell celebrates the world premiere of Mark Farrelly’s play Howerd’s End that explores the untold story of comedy legend Frankie Howerd, writes Michael Holland...

The writer says, “Howerd was and still is one of Britain’s best-loved comedians… A radical, whose courage and innovation as a performer have too often been obscured by cosy nostalgia.

He paved the way for other nonconformists like The Goons, Monty Python and Eddie Izzard.”

Set in the living room of the Somerset home of Howerd and his lover Dennis Heymer, Howerd’s End explores the development of Howerd’s comedy to his final performances when he had a reinvention as a cult godfather of stand up.

The play also shines an unflinching spotlight on the clandestine 35-year relationship with Heymer, who would become Howerd’s manager and anchor, although his existence was strictly guarded from the public, not least because for many years the relationship was illegal and the couple feared blackmail if anyone beyond their immediate circle found out. The play also shows the other cost of fame

– Howerd’s neurosis, his unfaithfulness and use of LSD that pushed his career and relationship to the brink of destruction.

Mark Farrelly spoke to the News about his life and work. The first thing the writer said was that Howerd grew up in Eltham, which is not far from Hither Green where he now lives and loves the “peaceful, friendly vibe”.

Writing was a passion from an early age but Farrelly really wanted to become an actor “for the attention”. Being offered an acting job straight after he graduated from Cambridge meant he never went to drama school. Writing, though, was always there and having his heart broken was the start of his second career. “In my case the break up was the catalyst to writing two solo plays which look at extremes of despair and hope in an ultimately positive and cathartic way… Four years later, I’m still performing them up and down the country.”

Frankie Howerd is played by Simon Cartwright while Farrelly plays Dennis Haymer in Howard’s End as it is the acting that still excites: “The high-wire risk is just so invigorating.”

Mark has written plays about those that some may say are on the edges of society:

Quentin Crisp and Patrick Hamilton but he tells me “they are all reflections of my own and many people’s deepest character traits. Frankie is the side of us that is neurotic, thinks that everything is a disaster but will plough on anyway; Patrick is the tendency to hedonism and self-destruction, and Quentin is that side of us that says: no matter what people say or do, I insist on being fully my true self.”

For those of us who only remember Frankie Howerd being funny on TV, this play delves a lot deeper. Says Farrelly, “The show is very honest about the difficult sides of Frankie’s character, because I believe you cannot have a true connection with someone unless you’re prepared to embrace the full spectrum of light and shade in their character (and your own).

So the play tries to take you closer to Frankie than anyone has ever been, and is definitely not cosy nostalgia. You will learn something new.”

Air-raid sirens sounded over London at 5pm on September 7 1940, ushering in the first night of the Blitz.

An old receiving station for smallpox sufferers, on the current site of Surrey Docks Farm, was one of the first to be targeted.

Though the sirens were an all-toofamiliar sound for Londoners, from the many drills held in preparation, that evening brought an experience all of its own.

The centre, then a collection of brick buildings and wooden shelters set up in 1883, was said to have been half- destroyed by the blaze that was still being fought the following day.

Incredibly, there were no casualties from the falling carpet bombs.

Only one porter endured a “burnt nose” and one stoker suffering with asthma went to hospital for an extended period with smoke inhalation.

There are records to hand that tell the stories of eight of the firefighters who were commended for their heroism.

Richard Ashton – later awarded a British Empire medal – was in charge of a fire boat towing a barge with 50 passengers from South Wharf.

This was no easy task, with bombs still falling and the Thames littered with unmanned barges drifting uncontrolled after their mooring ropes had burned away.

Ashton and a colleague successfully navigated between them, disembarking his petrified passengers to safety upriver at Nelson's Dry Dock.

Harold Barrett was in charge of the crew that evacuated the staff and nurses from the Receiving Station via the Pier, and transported them by boat across the river to Millwall, on the Isle of Dogs.

Third, was Timothy Muir, who risked his life entering the burning receiving station to rescue a matron trapped inside. Theirs was a perilous journey, taking the matron through gaps in the walls of fire, along burning streets, and getting stuck in a flooded bomb crater.

Muir earned the prestigious George Medal for his part in this rescue.

Germander Speedwell, a heritage researcher at Surrey Docks Farm, carried out a project in 2017 searching for locals who helped put together information professional firemen and auxiliaries who helped that day. Another of the famous eight, James Bowtell, was the colleague working beside Ashton to navigate the 50 lives across the river to safety while weaving between the burning barges.

The 43-year-old Peckham man also earned a Commendation.

Nathaniel Barnes was a 50 year-old

machinist then living in Waterloo, who after helping with the evacuation of staff across the river by police boat, volunteered to submerge himself underwater to cut away a rope that was tangled in the propeller. Thanks to him, the boat was able to continue its rescue work. Records show he was recommended for an award, but did not receive one. Hearing that nurses were trapped in the South Wharf, 26-year-old Frederick Meeks from the Amos Estate in Rotherhithe set off alone to try and help.

In a small boat he steered between burning barges, but was carried back downstream by the tide. Meeks received a Commendation for his effort, having continued to help with firefighting all night and the following day “with cheerfulness and indifference to danger”.

Lastly, Samuel Melvin, a 44-year- old driver working as an auxiliary, wasn’t even supposed to be on duty that day, but came to help when he heard Surrey Docks was under attack. He was awarded the George Medal, after he and Muir rescued a matron from the burning site and got her to safety, after a perilous journey through burning streets with three different vehicles and a misadventure with a flooded bomb

crater.

The matron, Sister Annie E Hope. was the last to flee down the pier seeking escape by boat, only for an incendiary bomb to land on the pier ahead of her, forcing her to turn back. She was rescued later by road, and said she owed her life to Melvin and Muir who risked their own lives to return to the burning site for her.

1. Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that on 24 September 2020 it has made modifications to the above experimental orders under sections 9 and 10 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC

2. The modifications of the experimental orders are to make certain revisions to the LSP Southwark Bridge Road area trials to accommodate changes to the trial measures in AMERICA STREET, as follows: note: All measurements are in metres ‘m’ and are approximate. (a) removes the trial introduction of ‘one-way’ north-eastbound operation in the full length of America Street and contra-flow cycle lanes; (b) replaces the trial ‘no entry’ except cycles point at its junction with Southwark Bridge Road with a ‘no motorised vehicles’ restriction, which includes the exemption for emergency service vehicles, taxis and refuse collection; (c) removes the trial relocation of an existing permit holders’ parking place in Controlled Parking Zone ‘C1’ (10m) this parking place on the southern side will remain suspended for the trial; and (d) amends existing ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions (double yellow lines) to accommodate the above parking changes (no additional double yellow lines introduced in this revision, which were not previously introduced during the trial).

The alternative route for vehicles whilst the crane operation is in place for (2a) will be via Queen Elizabeth Street, Lafone Street, Curlew Street (2b) Tooley Street, Barnham Street, Crucifix Lane.

4.

The existing one way working in Shand Street will be made two way for access and egress purposes for (2b)

5.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

6.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

7.

The restriction will be in place for (2a) between the 2nd October 2020 - 1st April 2022, Monday – Friday during the hours of 11:00hrs – 16:30hrs and Saturday 11:00hrs - 14:00hrs.

Various crane operations will be in place on Friday 16th 23rd and 30th October, the closure will be managed by Traffic Marshalls. (2b) 2nd October – 26 October.

‘2Slick’ calls out ‘Destroyer’

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk CHRIS KONGO has predicted a “knockout ending” as he called out Conor Benn over a potential welterweight bout between the unbeaten pair.

Bermondsey’s ‘2Slick’ extended his professional record to 12-0 with a stoppage of Luther Clay at Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Fight Camp in Brentwood last month. It was 27-year-old Kongo’s first fight in sixteen months and he is set to return to the ring in November.

Benn, 23, is unbeaten in sixteen professional fights. He hasn’t fought since October 2019, when he defeated Steve Jamoye at the O2 Arena in Greenwich for the WBA Continental welterweight title.

‘The Destroyer’ Benn’s next fight is expected to be against Chris Jenkins for the British title.

“I tweeted Conor Benn, I said 'I would love to fight you.' I believe that he's going to win the British title,” Kongo told Sky Sports.

“If he can come and defend it with me, we'll get a big domestic clash going on. That would be great to see.

“It's been spoken about a lot of times. A lot of people compare me to Conor Benn and now I've had the fight, my name is out there. People are saying that I'm the best welterweight in the division.

“For me, it's not about believing them, it's about believing in myself, and proving it. That's a fight where I know I can prove it to the people.

“Conor Benn says he actively wants to fight me and it's an easy fight to make, so let's see.

“If I have to become mandatory for the position to fight Conor Benn, I will do that as well.

Either way, I want to just get my hands on the British title.

“Me against Benn would be a wicked fight. I believe in myself.

I'm big, tall and strong for the weight, and I can only see it going one way, with a knockout ending by Chris Kongo.

“Every little aspect plays a part in my boxing. My experience, my size, and my power. It will be a one-sided fight.”

Benn replied to the tweet: “The fight is very easy to make, when I get through my hard fight with Jenkins. We can get it on!”

Kongo has ambitions to fight some of the bigger names on the American scene, including the likes of world-title holders Errol Spence Jr and Terence Crawford.

Kongo added: “I look at them and I say to myself, 'One day, I will be fighting one of them.'

I'm looking at them as targets.”

Dulwich Hamlet boss Gavin Rose thinks it would be ‘impossible’ to play the season without fans

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk THE START of Dulwich Hamlet’s league season could be delayed if the decision to allow supporters back into stadiums on October 3 is reversed.

Cabinet office minister Michael Gove confirmed this week that the government was looking at how to “pause” the phased return of fans to events at elite level. He added: “We must look at sporting events now with caution, but of course we also recognise that sports are a vital part of this nation.”

BBC Sport have reported that the National League board is expected to make a decision after a meeting on Thursday, following consultations with clubs.

The National League chairman, Brian Barwick, has said clubs “could suffer severe economic hardship" without match-day income.

Millwall chief executive Steve Kavanagh said the change of policy over the return of supporters would be a “disaster” for clubs from Championship level to the lower professional leagues, including National League South, where Dulwich have played for two seasons.

The National Leagues were suspended in March after the coronavirus outbreak, with a decision made later on an early finish of seasons, leaving the Hamlet in nineteenth place. Play-off games were played behind closed doors in July and August.

Speaking to the News recently, Hamlet boss Gavin Rose feared it would be “impossible” for the club to complete the season without fans.

“One of the puzzles is how to survive without gate income, the club’s main revenue source. There is still no date for the return of fans at National League level,” Rose said.

“We as a club more than anyone need our supporters in, that’s what our model’s been built on over the years.

For us it’s imperative that we do get the go-ahead to have our fans coming back

“Even at a smaller rate and then obviously gradually grow, because without that it’s going to be impossible for us, really, to carry out the season.”

The Hamlet expressed their bafflement at this week’s development when they tweeted from their official Twitter account: “Well, this has all gone well hasn't it? “We're waiting, like everyone else, for some clarification from the Government and FA. “We'll keep you all as informed as we

can, but having lived through the last six months that could be as useful as a chocolate teapot.”

Last weekend, there were ten test events in the EFL, with 1,000 fans allowed into grounds including Charlton’s. There were also plans this week for up to 1,000 supporters to attend friendly matches at Dagenham & Redbridge, Yeovil Town, Dartford and Notts County.

National League Chesterfield’s chief executive John Croot said he was “astonished” after hearing this week’s announcement by the government.

“I just saw it on television like millions of other people and hundreds of our supporters,” he told BBC Radio Sheffield.

“It was the first I had heard of it and nobody in the club had any idea that bombshell was coming our way.

“We're okay financially for the time being. Speaking to other clubs there are some out there who are weeks away from real issues.”

Meanwhile, the Hamlet continued their preparations for the season with a 1-1 friendly draw at Wealdstone at the weekend.

Last season’s National League South champions went ahead through Michee Efete’s goal in the first half.

Danny Mills almost grabbed an equaliser before the break but the striker saw two efforts hit the woodwork.

Dulwich were level in the 58th minute when Tyrique Hyde fired home a low shot, before home goalkeeper Harry Isted denied new Hamlet signings Korey Henry, Michael Timlin and Jordan Higgs.

The Hamlet are due to start their season with an FA Cup fixture on October 3.

Dulwich Hamlet Women, meanwhile, defeated Hackey WFC 6-2 in the second preliminary round of the FA Cup. They meet Lancing in the next round on October 4.

GETTING THAT first win away from home has been an elusive task for Millwall in recent seasons. This is the first time that Millwall have won their opening away league game of the campaign since August 8, 2015, when they defeated Shrewsbury Town in League One in Neil Harris’ first full campaign as manager.

Since his arrival in SE16, Gary Rowett has overseen a major turnaround in Millwall’s performances and results on the road. A trip to Swansea last November was where Rowett established the 5-2-3 formation that has served the Lions so well on their travels. Rowett has taken charge of seventeen away games in the Championship as Millwall manager and seen a return of ten clean sheets.

There was not just relief at a collective level for the whole side on Saturday but also for Jed Wallace.

The man that makes Millwall tick into those attacking areas, he was exceptional in the first half of last season and during the early parts of Rowett’s reign. He was the only player in the Championship last season to reach double figures for both goals and assists. But, towards the end of the last campaign that productive output had dropped off.

It would be fair to say that he has been looking for that little break and little bit of luck - and he got it on Saturday afternoon. A slip-up in defence from Michael Ihiekwe, who tried and failed to cut out Mason Bennett’s ball, gave the former Portsmouth and Wolves man his chance. He raced through on goal and went around Jamal Blackman to calmly slot the ball into the empty and unguarded net. It was his first

The celebrations, with an exuberant slide from Wallace before he was engulfed by his team-mates, showed just how much it meant to everyone.

It was as if Wallace had just scored a 30-yard stunner in the last minute.

Wallace is a popular figure and it was a great show of unity in a team that Rowett has always said has a huge

amount of togetherness.

Tom Bradshaw will take heart from that. The striker is currently in the midst of a long goal drought. The last time he found the net was on January 4 in a 3-0 win over Newport in the FA Cup third round.

However, it has not been for the want of trying. He worked tirelessly in the first half at the New York Stadium without reward. Both Wallace and Bennett were unable to get in and

around Bradshaw to support him after he had won the ball in attacking areas.

That was something that changed in the second half with both Bennett and Wallace getting further up the pitch to offer options for Bradshaw.

While Rowett was disappointed with Millwall’s creativity on Saturday, he was delighted with the defensive performance. It’s back-to-back clean sheets to start the league campaign.

Rotherham pumped balls into the box all afternoon, but Jake Cooper, Alex Pearce and Shaun Hutchinson held firm to ensure that the Millers couldn’t make a breakthrough. For all of their dominance in the first half, Rotherham failed to make Bart Bialkowski work. Freddie Ladapo went closest but scuffed a shot wide of the far-left post. Bialkowski was called into action in the second half to make an important save from Joe Mattock, but otherwise the stopper was rarely troubled.

Rowett is pleased with the start from a side that have notoriously found it difficult to get going in the league.

“We get a little bit of fortune with the goal but Jed nevertheless anticipates it well and takes it well,” Rowett said.

“It would have been really easy to crumble in to the pressure. We didn’t do enough in an attacking sense to win the game really.

“The only thing that is really important to me is that historically Millwall have not started seasons quickly and what we have done so far is we have started on the front foot with our results.”

It all means that Millwall have four points from a possible six and two clean sheets from two. The Lions now switch their focus to Brentford at The Den this Saturday.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MAHLON ROMEO says there is a “spiritual vibe” in the Millwall dressing room and believes the Lions should be targeting a topsix place this season.

Romeo, who made his first league start this season at Rotherham last Saturday, has been with Millwall since 2015, making him one of the Lions’ longest-serving players alongside Shaun Williams, Ben Thompson, and Shane Ferguson.

Shaun Hutchinson and Jed Wallace joined in 2016 and Jake Cooper in 2017 as Millwall won promotion to the Championship that year.

The Lions have finished eighth in two of the last three campaigns, and Romeo feels the bar should be raised even higher this term.

“I think everyone in the squad now knows what we’re capable of,” Romeo said. “We’ve been able to start this season with the manager there from the beginning, so he’s been able to implement his ideas which I think are really good and really working with the group we’ve got.

“Everyone knows that we’re capable of doing great things in this league.

There’s kind of a spiritual vibe in the dressing room, everyone knows how far we can go – if we can implement and execute what the gaffer is telling us to do.

“It’s a different league this year but we’re going to go at it and grab it with both hands.

“A lot of us have been in League One together, we’ve been in the Champ together. We’ve known each other on and off the pitch for a very long time now. Building those relationships really helps.”

One of the things boss Gary Rowett has implemented is a change of formation to 5-2-3 and a more patient, passing style.

That gives Romeo a freer attacking role as a right wing-back, and the defender has been impressed with how Rowett has evolved a team that played a more direct style in over four seasons under Neil Harris.

“The way he’s managed to transition it I don’t think he could have done it any better,” Romeo continued. “It wouldn’t have been easy to come into a team so set in its ways over the years.

“He’s added that in slowly and surely as a foundation, in terms of passing, he’s done that really well.

Everyone’s really excited about this season. Everyone’s going to have to play because we’ve got a small squad

as it is. Every player knows whether they’re starting a game or not they will eventually get the chance to play.

“We’re capable of playing both, the four or the five [in defence], which is a good tool to have. With this manager we can do both well.

“Personally I prefer the wing-back role. It allows me to be much more attacking and aggressive. If we keep playing it this year I’ve got my own personal goals and targets that I want to hit with the team. I’m raring to go.”

Rowett is encouraging his players to make more passes and keep possession waiting for opportunities to open teams up.

Romeo said: “It requires more from everyone. It’s something that we didn’t do as much in previous seasons but it’s something that we’re all capable of doing. Most players are at this level.

We were doing it a lot more towards the end of last season, the trouble was doing it on our pitch because our pitch wasn’t great.

“But now we’ve got a good pitch, we’ve been playing the formation for a while and we know our strengths.

Everyone in the whole squad can play that way.

“But one of the main things as well is that we can all do the ugly side of the game. That’s something that we had to do against Rotherham, we didn’t

have the opportunity to pass and play maybe as much as we would have liked, as much as we could do against other teams this season.

“Having both is one of the most powerful strengths any side can have. Having those three defenders [Hutchinson, Cooper and Alex Pearce], I wouldn’t fancy playing against any of them. It’s really hard to break down, really, really strong.”

Romeo played with a groin problem towards the end of the 2019-20 season. And he revealed it is an issue that he will have to continue to manage.

“I had to be careful,” he said. “It was very frustrating towards the end of last season. It was a spanner in the works because it messes up the flow of things. The way things are going now, we’ve resolved it.

“It’s really up to me, to be fair, and managing myself when I’m not playing games. It’s something I’m going to have to stay on top of for the foreseeable future.

“The way technology is nowadays, there are all these different instruments and whatnot. There are lasers, complex machines shooting little charges of electricity at the affected area. I’ve got a programme that I do with Bloomy [head of performance Laurence Bloom] and the sports science team.

“It was a short summer break as it was but then turned out to be even shorter for me. But I came through it and I’m feeling good, feeling strong and fit. I think the whole team is as well.

“It wasn’t so much of a break, really, it’s almost run straight into this season.

Mentally I wouldn’t say I switched off which is a good thing. I’ve just come straight back into it.

“We won last weekend and kept a clean sheet and from a personal point of view it was good to get minutes. Each minute I play means I can shake off the rustiness that I picked up missing out on games in pre-season. I’d only played 45 minutes against Bromley. My first game back was against Cheltenham so it was good to get some minutes against Championship quality on Saturday.”

Asked if Millwall’s objective this season should be a top-six place, Romeo doesn’t hesitate.

“Comfortably, yes. I say comfortable because that’s what we should be aiming for. If you look at our seasons in the Championship we’ve done well finishing in the top ten. If we can stay consistent this season, which is the main thing, then that’s definitely our goal.

“Obviously it’s only been two games but we want to be up around the top six.”

Jed Wallace is a football obsessive unlike some players

Jed is keen thinker on football – and he’s not the only one in the Lions squad exclusive John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IT’S OFTEN said in football the best teams manage themselves in the dressing room – and Millwall have a big advantage in that regard.

That’s because, according to Jed Wallace, there are “five or six” players in the Lions squad that he reckons will go on to become bosses.

Shaun Williams was appointed playercoach this summer. Ireland international Williams completed one of his coaching badges in Ireland with Lions skipper Alex Pearce, whom Wallace thinks will go into the management game.

Wallace says he is a “student of the game” and absorbs as much as he can through watching how teams play.

That’s not the case with all footballers.

Former Tottenham defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto made more than 350 appearances in his career but admitted he saw it only as a job rather than a passion. Carlos Tevez says he prefers watching golf to football, and current Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen admits he has “no idea about football”.

That is the polar opposite to how Wallace feels about his profession.

“I’m definitely a student of the game,” Wallace says. “I love football. Some players don’t as much as others. I love it, I’m watching it all the time. I know a lot about the other teams in the league, their players, how they play.

It’s something I’m passionate about.

“

Whereas for some it’s just a job.

“There are some players who want to be coaches, some who want to be managers. I don’t know yet if I want to be a manager or a coach, I’ve still got a long career ahead of me.

“We’ve seen Willo, a close friend of mine, do a little bit of coaching now.

Pearcey will want to be a manager. We’ve got a lot of characters that really, really love football. I know that might sound stupid, because we’re all footballers, but the reality is a few don’t.

“We’ve got a changing room where there’s going to be five or six managers amongst us, which does help tactically.

And with the gaffer we’re improving all the time. He’s been frustrated with how we’ve performed on the ball and I don’t think on the attacking front anyone’s really got going yet.

“But it says a lot about our strength when despite individually not anyone having a good game yet in the forward positions, that we’ve got four points out

of six against Stoke and a Rotherham team that I think will take points off a lot of people because of the way they play.”

Wallace revealed he had a tactical debrief with manager Gary Rowett in the summer, about how he could get into more goal-scoring positions.

That has certainly paid off in the league so far, with Wallace netting the winner at Rotherham last Saturday.

Wallace explained: “It was initially the gaffer watching games back and realising that quite a few times I run away from goal. It’s just tactical stuff that obviously the gaffer knows more about than me and he said sometimes leave other people do the work and you try and get on the end of things, stay in that eighteen-yard box at times.

“Especially now with Scotty Malone coming in, he’s going to be a lot more attacking than maybe Muzza [Murray Wallace] was at times, though Muzza did brilliantly and brought us a lot of defensive stability in that position.

“But Scotty will push on more and with him and Mahlon [Romeo] playing wing-backs there is no reason why I can’t get on the end of a few crosses and finish off a few more chances.

“To be honest, I was disappointed with how my season ended on the goal front, to not score in a while. So to get one early was good and it’s something we need to improve on, get more players scoring more goals.

“With our back three, Muzza, Mahlon and Bart [Bialkowski] in goal, we’re going to keep a lot of clean sheets.

It’s up to the forward players and the midfielders to chip in with goals and assists, and it’s always nice to get off the mark quickly.”

Rowett has called for Millwall to show more composure in possession.

Wallace agrees, but also explains why he thinks Millwall have the ideal mix to be successful, and which team characteristic he’d prefer over any other.

“A lot of it stems from the opposition you play against,” Wallace adds. “Stoke are a very, very direct team and when they’re direct you kind of have to meet fire with fire at times.

“I believe we’ll have a strong season.

We want to improve on the ball and when you have people like Willo and Woodsy [Ryan Woods] in the squad and Scotty coming in there’s no reason why we won’t be better on the ball.

“But also if teams want to have a tearup with us then we can. You won’t find many in the league more game than us and that want to win as much as us.

“One thing you can always say about the group of players I’ve played with

at Millwall is that we give 110 per cent every week. We give our all. Ryan Leonard, Murray Wallace, they give their all. Tom Bradshaw – not scoring as many goals as he wants – but he gives his all in a Millwall shirt. I don’t think that can ever be questioned in our changing room.

“What can be questioned is how much talent we do have. At times we need to take more responsibility as players and show a little bit more quality.

“But then we’d much rather be like we are, a solid foundation and looking to improve on the ball, rather than the other way around where we’ve got to score four goals to win a game.

“We’re doing the right things every day. We’re working hard on the training ground. It’s just about patterns of play and new players building new relationships, the new signings settling in.

“I think we’re starting to see that now.

Woodsy’s been at the club six, seven months and you’re starting to see what a big player he’s going to be for us.

“We look strong. Thommo [Ben Thompson], Skally [Jiri Skalak], they’ve both had good pre-seasons but not made the bench last weekend. So we look as strong as we have for a long time.

“The manger has selection headaches, which he should have for a club that’s looking to do as well we want to this season.

“We’re excited and we really want to improve. With this manager in charge and the group that we’ve got there’s no reason why we can’t keep improving.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk TROY PARROTT was in line for a league debut for Millwall this Saturday against Brentford – if he came through Wednesday’s EFL Cup game against Burnley at The Den.

That game kicked off after the News went to press, with Gary Rowett set to give some of the players who haven’t started in the league match action.

One player nearing a competitive senior return is Frank Fielding. The goalkeeper played for the under-23s in a 2-2 Professional Development League draw against Watford on Monday.

But Lions boss Rowett doesn’t want to rush him back into action after his first competitive appearance in more than a year.

“It’ll be more recovery, more training and then we’ll look towards the weekend to see whether he can be involved,” Rowett said.

“The first thing is he got through the game fine which is great for Frank because he’s had a tough time. We want to just safely get him through a period of training and games.

“The next step is getting him in the match-day squad. He has to be ready and have had enough training and enough match minutes to go into the match-day squad, because of course if anything should happen then he’s on the pitch.

“We have to be fair to him and to ourselves but hopefully after those minutes then on Saturday there might be some possibility he could be back involved.”

Millwall face the highest scorers in the 2019-20 Championship season in the Bees, who hit the back of the net 80 times in 46 league games.

But Lions attacker Jed Wallace reckons his side not only have the back three to deal with any Championship attack, but also the best goalkeeper in the league in Bart Bialkowski.

Wallace praised the performances of Shaun Hutchinson, Alex Pearce and Jake Cooper in the 1-0 win at Rotherham last weekend.

“On the day our back three were incredible,” Wallace said. “You saw how well they complement each other, with Coops’ and Hutchy’s athleticism and the organisation of Pearcey. You can see why we have picked up so many clean sheets, because the three of them are so solid.

And we’ve got Muzza [Murray Wallace] to come into it as well.

“And with the best goalie in the league behind them you know that if someone does make a mistake or there is a bit of quality then eight or nine times out of ten we’re going to keep a clean sheet. It’s two clean sheets in two games at the start of the season. Four points is a good start when in my opinion we haven’t played very well.

Frank Fielding started in goal, his first competitive appearance in more than a year.

Fielding, 32, has recovered from an arm injury as he looks to push Bart Bialkowski for the number 1 position in the senior side this season.

But nine minutes from time George Alexander fired in the equaliser to earn Kevin Nugent’s side a point.

Fielding played for 62 minutes before he was replaced with Jordan Gillmore.

“I’m really disappointed that we didn’t win it, because I thought we deserved to,” Nugent said. “The majority of it was an excellent performance, individually and collectively.

“We were a bit unfortunate in conceding at 1-0, but we should’ve been more in front by then. There was a misunderstanding in terms of their first

goal, and then they get another, but the lads showed tremendous character to come back and get a draw.

“Their heads could’ve gone down, but that’s never in doubt with these players.

“We should have six points instead of two and we should have more goals than we do by now, so that’s something to work on.”

Millwall are using the same formations and tactics at under-23 level as the first team, as Lions boss Gary Rowett wants the youngsters to be familiar with his philosophy if they are required to step up.

Nugent added: “We’ve got the majority of the same group as last

season and we’re working on a new shape to match the first team as well, which is enjoyable.

“We won the league last season, which was pleasing, but we’ve had players in and around the first team, which is what the goal is. We also have lads out on loan, such as Danny McNamara.

“There’s a lot of different avenues with regards to what success is, but we’re certainly getting there.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett says the club plans to “cast the net wider” when recruiting players as he acknowledged this weekend’s opponents Brentford’s success in the transfer market.

The Bees sold Ollie Watkins to Aston Villa this summer for a club record for the Villans of £28million, potentially rising to £33million. Brentford signed Watkins from Exeter for £1.8million.

The previous summer the west London club sold Neil Maupay to Brighton for £20million after buying

him from French Ligue 1 side SaintÉtienne for £1.6million. Brendan MacFarlane, Brentford’s France-based scout, also spotted Saïd Benrahma who has been linked with a £20millionplus move to the Premier League.

Millwall haven’t seen that level of spectacular rises in values for players they have signed. They made a profit of around £7million on George Saville’s sale to Middlesbrough, while the likes of Jake Cooper and Jed Wallace would command similar fees if they were to be sold.

Brentford’s success in the transfer market has allowed them to raise the bar higher financially – they spent over £20million last summer on players such as Pontus Jansson,

Mathias Jensen and Bryan Mbeumo.

Brentford’s recruitment strategy has been compared to the ‘Moneyball’ approach of the Oakland Athletics baseball team, using a database of player statistics to identify targets.

Millwall have been planning to extend their scouting network into foreign leagues. When he was manager of Stoke, Rowett recruited players from the Portuguese and French leagues as well as MLS in the United States.

“The way Brentford do things is their own unique model, it’s the way they want to do it,” Rowett said. “They buy players at a level to develop and then sell at a higher level.

“They’ve started to see the success of

that and buy players at a medium level to hopefully sell at an even higher level. Of course they’re trying to get promoted and they have a consistent style of play.

“I think we have a very different model and one that we think is the right thing for our club. Within that is to find the best age profile, the best player out there, the best value out there, whether that’s in a European or domestic market, the British market.

“It doesn’t really matter, it’s more important that we get the right player, but I think certainly casting our net a little bit wider. That’s something we’ve always done personally.

“I know the recruitment team were keen to expand those options for us.”

Supporters were set to return from October 1, and there were ten pilot events across the EFL last weekend.

Lions CEO Steve Kavanagh last week said the continued absence of fans could have disastrous consequences for clubs.

“It’s incredibly disappointing,” Rowett said. “It’s obviously a debate that rages on and is affecting many people. It’s more from a business perspective for the club, like any other business it relies on its customers for income. Unfortunately at the moment for various reasons it can’t do that.

“I don’t really want to go into detail on my own personal opinion on it.

But it’s really disappointing for the club to have done so much work, to then not be allowed fans back socially distanced.”

Prime minister Boris Johnson said: “We will not be able to do this from October 1 and I recognise the implications for our sports clubs, which are the life and soul of our communities.

"The chancellor and the culture secretary are working urgently on what we can do now to support them."

Cabinet office minister Michael Gove added: "What we must do is look at sporting events now with caution but we also recognise that sport is a vital part of this nation and we're looking at everything we can do to support our athletes, our great clubs, through what will be a challenging time."
