The council scheme will see businesses such as cafes, pubs and restaurants being rated for their social distancing measures, track and trace arrangements and cleanliness.

By law, businesses must already carry out a coronavirus risk assessment. The scheme will see environmental health practitioners deployed by the council visit the sites to check the measures.

Firms will be given a simple pass or fail – and those failing will be given time to fix the problems before another assessment.

“Local authorities and businesses’ response to Covid-19 is an evolving situation, and as such, safety can never be completely guaranteed,” said the council’s outgoing leader Cllr Peter John.

“However, it’s very important that we aim to introduce consistency in how we look at the changing regulations and risk assessments.

“This new scheme offers that consistent approach and looks at a simple checklist of measures that businesses can carry out, which follow the Government’s guidelines on keeping people safe.”

Thirty businesses are currently partaking in the trial throughout September and October. If successful, the scheme – led by the City of London Corporation alongside Southwark and Camden – could be rolled out across London.

Harriet Harman warned the government about ‘endemic’ worker exploitation in Leicester’s fast fashion factories three years ago - but her calls for action fell on deaf ears.

After detailing abuses in the sector in a 2017 inquiry, parliament’s human rights committee called for new powers to be given to councils to take direct action; allowing them to inspect and close factories that breached regulations. These were ignored.

This month it emerged that more than 50 people linked to the Leicester textiles industry had been banned from company directorships for between three and fourteen years, according to data from the Insolvency Service.

Peter John ends a decade long rule at the council and new leader elected

The Camberwell and Peckham MP, who co-chairs the committee, has criticised Boris Johnson for trying to ‘pass buck’ and blame Leicester’s mayor for the situation.

“In 2017 the human rights committee complained about fast fashion's failure to take responsibility for wrongdoing in the Leicester supply chain,” Harman said.

“Nothing was done.”

The report, Human Rights and Business 2017: Promoting responsibility and ensuring accountability detailed human rights abuses in garment and textile sectors in UK factories and by UK suppliers based in Turkey.

“It is common practice for employers to hand out wage slips which understate the number of hours worked by employees in order to save on employers’ tax contributions and to make it appear as though employers are paying the minimum wage,” one section of the report notes.

“For example, while most workers work between 40–50 hours a week, their wage slips might only show 20 hours of work, paid at the minimum wage.”

Leicester was forced to enter a local lockdown after recording the highest infection rate in the country, with new cases believed to be fuelled by unsafe working conditions in factories.

They included a factory manufacturing for online retailer Boohoo, which failed to down tools during the pandemic.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Pie ‘n’ mash is a south London institution. But could you eat five kilos of pies in one sitting?

That’s exactly what Max Stanford did on Friday at Manze’s pie shop in Peckham, consuming a mammoth eighteen pies and seven mashes in just 43 minutes.

The 33-year-old, from Brixton, said he wanted to set himself the ‘man v food’ challenge at Manze’s, because it is the pie shop he always visited in childhood.

Max became interested in competitive eating late last year, and now competes in the British Eating League, where he is currently ranked as the second-best competitive eater.

The Peckham pie challenge is his

biggest food conquest to date - and will help him prepare for an official competition with the league, where he is due to eat 100 Greggs sausage rolls.

“I just thought it would be quite a fun challenge to do,” said Max, who works in the charity sector. “They were really nice to me, I bought a platter of Amazon and then went for it. I ordered eighteen pies and seven mashes.

“Someone set up the British Eating League, but it’s mainly in the north, so I just thought it would be good to do a London one.”

Max first got into the competitive eating scene through going to the gym, as he had wanted to bulk up.

Despite eating large quantities of food as a challenge, he says he wants to showcase that you can eat

competitively but still lead a healthy lifestyle.

He also has no plans to become one of Britain’s few professional competitive eaters, saying it is a hobby alongside his work as an analyst for an early years’ charity.

“I do it on the side of my job, it’s a hobby,” he told the News. “You can have these meals and still live a healthy life.

“I do lots of exercise and I kind of incorporate it in. Ideally, I’d love to be able to do it for charity.”

Other extreme meals Max has taken on include eating a 54-ounce burger in just twelve minutes, and nearly sixty Yorkshire Puddings in just three minutes.

42 metre Walkway to tying the knot

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Couples can now get married at Southwark’s most recognisable landmark, Tower Bridge.

The iconic attraction is now offering couples the chance to say their vows inside its walkways during daylight hours for the first time.

Love-struck partners will be offered the chance to say their vows between September to December 2020, a hair-raising 42m above the River Thames.

The romantic location will set back a wedding budget by several thousand pounds, though. A £3,000 package will pay for a three-hour hire of the East Walkway, event set-

up for up to 24 guests, two members of staff on hand, and a sound system.

“My heart goes out to so many couples that have had their wedding plans scuppered by the uncertainty during this time,” said Chris Earlie, the head of Tower Bridge “So, I’m really proud that we are able to offer a truly memorable and unique wedding for those still longing for that magical wedding experience.

Love will literally be in the air!”

The attraction says it is “closely monitoring” government guidance around wedding receptions, but that for the moment ceremony bookings are open.

Tiddles the cat adventure ends happily for owners

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Firefighters rescued a cat which got stuck in the basement of a Dulwich house last Wednesday.

Crews were called the terraced house on Crescent Wood Road after the unlucky moggy got trapped inside some metal ducting.

Firefighters think the cat – whom

they have named Tiddles – went inside the ducting to find shelter and got stuck. They used a thermal imaging camera to find him, and were able to pull metal out of the tube to release him.

After the News reported details of the cat online, it was revealed that the curious moggy had actually travelled two miles in a builder’s van to the house in Dulwich.

‘Tiddles’ has now been reunited with its rightful owner.

Firefighter David Williams said: “The people in the building didn’t know whose cat he was – he may have been a stray as he wasn’t injured but looked in need of a good meal and we think he probably went in there to find somewhere warm.

“We named him Tiddles and left him in the care of the people at the building

who were going to call the RSPCA or a vet to get him checked over.

“We would always encourage people to call the RSPCA in the first instance if they see an animal stuck or in distress.

“Firefighters love animals too and we are always happy to assist if our specialist equipment is required.”

The Brigade was called at 10 to 3, and managed to get Tiddles out within 20 minutes.

No first day of MARITAL bliss

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A couple’s first day of married life was “ruined” after a radiator burst in their flat on a council estate, ruining keepsakes from their wedding.

New husband Daniel Solomon was enjoying his first day of married life with his wife in their flat on Woolstaplers Way in Bermondsey on Monday when suddenly the radiator exploded.

The leak caused water to run through the flat for an hour until the communal water supply was turned off, sadly ruining flowers from the wedding the previous day, and shoes which had been worn to the wedding.

The couple called the Fire Brigade in a bid to get the water turned off, and enlisted the help of an emergency plumber - which landed them with a hefty bill of more than £600.

“At around 11:30 the kitchen radiator split and black, gunky water began spewing out,” he said.

“It came out under huge pressure, spraying the walls, ceiling, ruining flooring and carpet, and destroying my new wife’s wedding shoes and some wedding mementoes.

“We were bailing out a bucket of water every 30 seconds for over an hour.

Mr Solomon claims a firefighter told him that the council had been working on the pipes, which caused a huge pressure spike in the radiators.

Southwark Council were contacted for comment, but did not reply before going to press.

“My new wife was in tears the whole evening,” he said.

“She woke up this morning and started crying again; she had wanted to press some of the pink roses we had taken back as keepsakes, but they had to be chucked as they were covered in

gunk.”

Now the couple are demanding an apology from the council for “ruining” their first day of married life, reimbursement for the emergency plumber, and an apology for the “rudeness” of one council staff member who visited the flat after the leak.

Another resident on the estate who was affected, Lindsey, slammed the council for what she called a “lack of compassion” in dealing with the leak.

“The council didn’t call it in as a priority,” she said. “The radiator burst around twelve o’clock, I called the council but they didn’t turn up until three o’clock.

“They weren’t bothered about what happened at all. I’ve got two kids, and it’s a good thing it wasn’t hot water, otherwise it would’ve burned them.

“It was like a whole pool, it was trying to spread out into the living room, I’ve had to use all my hand towels to mop it up.”

Two teenagers arrested after skate park stabbing

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Two teenagers have been bailed after a double stabbing in the South Bank skate park on Sunday.

The pair were stabbed in an alleged fight on Sunday at around 11pm. One, a fourteen-yearold, was found by police at the popular skate park suffering a

stab wound.

His injury was called “non lifethreatening.” Another teen, aged nineteen, presented at hospital for his injury, but these were also not thought to be “life-changing.”

Both of them were arrested on suspicion of affray, said police.

The pair have now been bailed.

New council leader appointed with new faces expected in the cabinet

Kieron Williams faces a huge job as he takes over mid-pandemic

Southwark Council has a new leader in the shape of 45-year-old Kieron Williams – a councillor in Camberwell since 2014, former charity work and once head of health and well-being in neighbouring Lambeth.

Elected by his Labour colleagues, he spoke to the News on the eve before taking over the post from Peter John, who has led the council for a mammoth ten years.

Tight-lipped on which appoints he would be making to his new cabinet at the council assembly on Wednesday night, he promised more than one new face. As the News reported last week one spot up for grabs is council’s finance, performance and Brexit portfolio being left vacant by Victoria Mills, who has stepped down from the post.

The finances of the council, Cllr Williams said, are better than in other parts of the country, reiterating Peter John’s assertion that despite being rocked by the pandemic and

a ten to fifteen million pound black hole, the reserves created through opportunities and investment preCovid should see them through.

However, with an estimated £25-30 million pound gap in 2021/22 the challenges for any leader will be huge.

“This pandemic has shown what we are able to do and where we were able to stand up. Get people off sleeping on our streets, food to those who need it and support to care homes,” he said.

However, he was quick to add: “And this came at a cost.”

Throughout the pandemic, Williams in his cabinet post in housing management and modernisation urged the government to support private renters by extending the evictions ban, and was responsible for overseeing a huge effort to protect and house rough sleepers from across London.

Its success came despite him telling the News this week that there was a 55 per cent rise in homelessness approaches to Southwark Council at the start of the pandemic and a housing waiting list that jumped from 11,000 to 13,000.

Eager to continue the fight to get the government to make good its promise to support local councils in light of the pandemic, he said that he wanted more work to be done at a local level to counter continuing problems like people being unable to get tests, with residents having to travel as far away as Scotland.

“We have shown what can be done

through effective partnerships with the NHS, charities and volunteers at a local level. The government has been all about supporting national providers in track and trace, tests and PPE and there have been delays and problems all over the country. It needs to invest in councils and local public health schemes that can work with the NHS and national labs; and could do it effectively.”

Asked what his big priorities are he said housing, the economy and the environment. Labour won the last two local elections largely on the promise of new council homes - 11,000 by 2043. He pointed to ‘clusters’ of economic growth across the borough from the bio-medical around the borough’s major hospitals, cultural clusters further south in places like Peckham and green industries in the north many of which he said were currently not so well known like startups involving battery re-usage. He said that despite the lack of government support and the precarious state of TfL’s finances the case was still strong for the Bakerloo Line extension – integral to the council’s regeneration plans for the Old Kent Road.

Committed to tackling air quality, getting local people walking and cycling he said that the council was right to move quickly to close off some of the roads under enhanced coronavirus powers in a bid to lower emissions, but told the News he will review this and look at how they were implemented.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A ‘remorseless’ man has been found guilty of chasing and stabbing a teenager to death in Elephant and Castle in an unprovoked attack.

Victim McCaulay Junior Urugbezi-Edwards, 18, was spotted by Rashai Annang, then 17, near to Elephant and Castle station on the day of the murder, May 5, 2019.

Annang then pursued him through the streets on his push bike, before stabbing him forcefully several times.

The prosecution outlined how McCaulay and Annang had met each other by chance, and had a very brief conversation.

A pursuit later followed which developed into a “breakneck chase,” the court heard.

Annang rode frantically after McCaulay as he ran for his life from Gaol Park into Tiverton Street, near the Rockingham Estate.

Annang found McCaulay by a low wall, “utterly defenceless”, jurors heard, and appeared to kick him while he was down.

He then stabbed him several times with force in a “deliberate and merciless” attack.

Having fatally stabbed the teen, Annang, who is from Lewisham, fled the scene leaving him fighting for his life on the street.

Members of the public tried to help McCauley before paramedics arrived at around 9.30pm.

He tragically died in hospital just hours later.

Annang was found guilty of the murder on Monday, and is due to be sentenced next month.

“This was a vicious unprovoked attack committed by Rashai Annang on McCaulay,” said Detective Sergeant Sarah Fisher following the ruling.

The seventeen-year-old, Katrina Makunova, was later killed in a confrontation with her exboyfriend, about whom she had made the claims.

Two PCs, Kerry Lynham and Sophie Dennis, were made to answer allegations of gross incompetence in front of a disciplinary committee about their interactions with Katrina before her death.

The teen tragically died after falling on a knife concealed in her handbag while in a confrontation with ex-partner Oluwaseyi Dada at a Camberwell block of flats in July 2018.

Dada, then 21, was later convicted of manslaughter and jailed.

A coroner may launch an investigation into the death of a person at Elephant and Castle station, writes Josh Salisbury...

The person was pronounced dead at the scene last Wednesday night, after reports of a person on the tracks.

Police say they are not treating the death as suspicious, but that they will prepare a file for the coroner. The person, about whom no further details have been made public, was pronounced dead at around 11.30pm.

“Officers were called to Elephant and Castle station at 11.31pm on 9 September following reports of a casualty on the tracks,” said a spokesperson for the British Transport Police.

“Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

It was claimed officers failed to acknowledge she was reporting allegations of harassment and other offences and take action.

They allegedly also did not complete the necessary risk assessments relating to a domestic abuse victim, while PC Dennis was accused of providing misleading information on a crime report saying Katrina had refused to answer questions. She had in fact not been asked.

The pair referred Katrina to a local domestic abuse support charity and suggested she take out a restraining order against Dada.

Gross incompetence for all of the allegations against PC Dennis were upheld at a hearing on Wednesday.

Unsatisfactory performance was proven for PC Lynham for failing to acknowledge the allegations made by Katrina and then taking action. Claims that she did not complete risk assessments were not proven.

Deputy Commissioner Sir Stephen House said: “We expect all our officers to take allegations of domestic abuse extremely seriously and follow proper procedures to safeguard victims.

“We join policing to protect people like Miss Makunova and I am deeply ashamed that these officers failed her. My thoughts are with Miss Makunova’s family and friends.”

PC Dennis was given a final written improvement notice and PC Lynham a written improvement notice.

An Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigation found failings in the action of ten other officers, ranging in rank from PC and detective sergeant, in relation to their dealings with Katrina.

These included investigating her allegations, safeguarding her as a child and supervising the work of other officers as they dealt with her matters.

The jury heard how the killer had not denied being on his bike in the Elephant and Castle area. Prosecutors had outlined CCTV footage which showed distinctive markings on Annang’s bike and clothes, and the evidence of two eyewitnesses who saw the murder.

Two days after the murder, Annang was found by police in a hotel in Norwich. He had fled there in order to “cover his tracks,” the court had heard.

A mother was reunited with her baby last week after reportedly leaving the pram on a train, writes Josh Salisbury...

The pair were separated on Tuesday evening at Peckham Rye station during rush hour.

Commuters reported that the woman had ‘forgotten’ the pram with her baby, causing a delay.

Southeastern Rail confirmed that the two were successfully reunited at Nunhead, saying: “Both were safe and well, and the service was back on the move with a five minute delay.”

Two women deny fraud charges at a Bermondsey care home

Amina Dewar, of Lea Bridge Road, Whipps Cross, appeared in court charged with signing receipts at Tower Bridge care home for goods and unauthorised services intended for vulnerable people, intending to make a personal gain of £7,969.75.

The offences are said to have taken place

between June 1, 2016 and March 1, 2020.

The 37-year-old indicated a plea of not guilty to the charge at Croydon Magistrates Court last Thursday.

Co-defendant Farah Sadoolah, of Lansdowne Road, Walthamstow, also appeared charged with fraud by false representation at the home intending to make a personal gain of £593.29, allegedly occurring over the same period.

The 29-year-old also indicated a plea of not guilty. The case has been sent to Inner London Crown Court for trial where both are due to appear on October 8th.

ENGIE, an energy services company and self-described ‘regeneration specialist’ will build the 23 new ecofriendly flats.

The six million pound project will use cutting-edge design techniques and insulation to create warmer homes with lower energy bills.

The roofs will be mounted with photo-electric solar panels generating clean electricity for the blocks.

ENGIE’s divisional chief executive, Colin Macpherson, explained: “Regeneration of vacant land can play an instrumental role in the provision of much-needed new homes and offers a prime opportunity to future proof our housing stock.

“We’re proud to be supporting Southwark Council on their ambitious journey to deliver 11,000 new council homes; and projects like this – where we can implement important renewables and energy efficiency measures - assist us in our own path to

make zero carbon happen.”

The two, interlinked blocks are expected to be completed within two years.

A focus on carbon efficient homes with renewable heating will be well received by anyone familiar with the pitfalls of district heating networks.

Increasingly the council is looking to alternatives to the creaking system that was designed to keep costs low.

As the News has reported, at least £350 million is needed to bring Southwark Council’s district heating systems up to scratch and to meet its environmental targets for carbon emissions.

At February’s Southwark Homeowners Conference, Michael Scorer, the local authority’s strategic director for housing and modernisation, offered apologies to the audience for heating outages on major estates throughout successive winters.

“I think that our heat networks are not in good condition and have not been invested in or maintained over the years,” he said.

“Some are 30-40 years old and at the end of their lifespan.”

The new homes are not the only ones

in the pipeline despite the impact of COVID-19.

Southwark Council says its contractors have continued house building with special measures in place to protect builders and local residents from spreading the virus.

Another new site is at Daniel’s Road in Nunhead, where contractors Osborne have been on site throughout the summer.

Councillor Leo Pollak - the new council homes cabinet member at Tooley Street - made a visit in August.

“I was excited to see the progress made on this development which will be exclusively council housing to meet the urgent need in the borough,” he said.

“I was impressed by Osborne’s health and safety practices and their commitment to meeting the planned timescales of the project despite the disruption caused by COVID-19.”

Like the development in Rye Hill, the site is building on top of space previously used for car parking and garages.

When complete, there will be nineteen new council homes; five terraced houses and a block of fourteen flats.

“Ricardo was such a lovely young boy, he was always ready to help everyone, always there for us and his friends. He treated everyone with respect either young or old, he spoke to everyone with kindness.

"So I don't know why on earth someone would do this to Ricardo. He had all his life ahead of him, so many plans for that life, and it was all stolen from him.

“Ten years have passed but there is still not a day that goes by that we don't cry at not having our Rick here with us. I strongly appeal to anyone out there that has information to come through for us and help us bring a close to all this pain."

Delancey and Southwark Council have issued an extraordinary statement arguing all eligible Elephant and Castle shopping centre traders have been relocated or offered new premises - and blasting the ‘various uncorroborated statistics’ by campaigners who say at least 40 are still left with nowhere to go.

The shopping centre will shut on September 24, several months after originally planned, due to Covid-19.

Groups including Latin Elephant and the 35% campaign have disputed Delancey and Southwark Council’s figures - claiming around 46 traders are being expelled.

In this long running dispute between activists and the developer, there is still confusion over the number of businesses affected.

The disparity is partly to do with the ‘red line’ of the development - only businesses within a certain perimeter qualify for the most support, including being offered new bases within nearby Delancey or Council-owned premises - confusion over the true number of tenants given some sub-let and others have multiple sites in the centre; and confusion over whether traders are voluntarily closing their businesses or simply giving up after years of uncertainty and decline.

In a statement sent to the News, Delancey and Southwark Council said: “We are aware of the various uncorroborated statistics that have been published through social and other online media.

“These are incorrect. We can confirm without question that all qualifying businesses have been relocated or offered relocation options.

Ricardo Cunha was watching TV at home with his girlfriend in Pondfield House, Elder Road, West Norwood on the evening of September 11, 2010. He heard a knock at the door at around 11.30pm and went to investigate.

When Mr Cunha leaned out of the front window, a gunman shot him in the head.

He was dead within half an hour, despite the efforts of the London Ambulance Service.

Delancey and the council argue the majority of traders have given ‘positive feedback’.

They confirmed: 79 Independent traders qualified for the relocation programme • 64 applications were received, 61 of which were ‘valid’ • These were for space in properties closest to the shopping centre owned by the Elephant and Castle Town Centre redevelopment and Southwark.

• Of these 61 businesses, eight market stall holders and two kiosk traders are still, as yet, to find a new home.

• The remaining eighteen businesses didn’t engage in the application process for space in Castle Square, Ash Avenue and Elephant Arcade, and are said to have ‘made their own arrangements’.

Where a trader has been sharing space with the principal tenant, they did not qualify for the process however it is understood some will continue to share space in their new locations.

One of the most contentious issues has been the future of the market traders.

“There is no further property in the immediate vicinity of the shopping centre and despite tours of the area and other London markets there are market traders that are under the belief that they will be offered a property,” the statement explained.

“This is not correct and has never been a commitment from the Elephant and Castle Town Centre team or the Council.”

Market traders who do not find a new site will receive £8,000 from a relocation fund.

City-wide suicide prevention campaign exceeds goal

More than 135,000 Londoners have accessed suicide prevention training to play their part in supporting others

by The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, to encourage Londoners to access suicide prevention training has surpassed its target of 100,000 participants.

The #ZeroSuicideLDN campaign assists Londoners in having more direct and honest conversations about suicide through free, online training.

Developed by the Zero Suicide Alliance,

Montview in Peckham opens after six months

the twenty minute program helps participants to play their part in saving lives in a city where more than twelve people a week take their own life.

More than 135,000 people have accessed the training after a surge in the number of participants during and after lockdown; a number that has exceeded the organisers’ original goal of 100,000 participants.

The program replaces quiz-based questions with real life stories and scenario videos from a range of ages, ethnicities and suicidal issues. Each

clip describes potential warning signs and teaches participants how to feel comfortable when talking with loved ones, friends or colleagues about suicide and mental health.

The Mayor of London has also taken part and is encouraging more people to do the same and help make London a ‘zero suicide city’.

He said: “Suicide is a tragedy, both for those who take their own life and for the loved ones they leave behind, and I am committed to doing everything in my power to reduce the number of suicides in our city.

“That is why I am proud many Londoners have joined me in taking Zero Suicide London’s online suicide prevention training to help play their part in saving lives and to let those who may be struggling know they are not

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A closure order on a housing association property in Warner Road was granted by Croydon Magistrates Court this month over the anti-social behaviour of its tenant.

Officers from Camberwell Green Safer Neighbourhood team submitted the application after reports of threatening and abuse behaviour towards their neighbours.

The closure order lasts for three months but can be extended by another three through the courts.

In an update shared by Southwark Police, PC Brown and PC Richardson from Camberwell Green Safer Neighbourhood Team explained: “We were successful in applying for a Closure Order at Croydon Magistrates against a property in Warner Road SE5 where the occupant was concerned in anti-social behaviour towards other residents.

“This also provides respite for the residents who have endured the ASB whilst further action is considered by the housing provider.”

The suspect used the blade to chase a fellow passenger off a route 2 bus in Tulse Hill on Sunday, August 9 at around 6.50am, after being challenged over not paying his fare.

Police said less than an hour later, the same man was caught on CCTV threatening several people at a bus stop in Elephant and Castle, before boarding a route 196 bus.

He is also said to have made a homophobic comment.

By Simon Throssell news@southwarknews.co.uk A memorial fund set up for a 23-year-old budding author from Dulwich, who tragically passed away in July, has raised nearly £6000 towards publishing his first novel.

Alfie Jack Brown was studying for a degree in History and English Literature at the University of Birmingham to pursue his dreams as a fantasy writer.

He had gone for a game of football with friends in his hometown of Dulwich when he collapsed and suffered a cardiac arrest. He was rushed to Kings College Hospital but later died.

A month after his passing, his sister Carly Brown has created a fundraising page to honour his memory with proceeds going towards publishing the novel he had been working on for many years.

Speaking to Birmingham Live, Carly said: “Since the age of about ten Alfie dreamt of becoming an author. He had been working on a fantasy novel for almost a decade and this memorial fund is partly dedicated to publishing his work.

"Alfie was taken too soon, but we can keep his wonderful imagination and bottomless creativity around us always.

"The fund will support other aspiring writers who need help telling their stories. We will remember Alfie laughing, chatting, dancing and dreaming."

The family would like to split any leftover funds between two charities which are yet to be decided on.

One will be in relation to support for young people with heart conditions and their families and the other will be in support of young writers.

In a post on the GoFundMe page, which has raised nearly £6000 so far, Carly wrote: “He is very dearly missed by his family, friends and everyone who knew him.

“Everyone coming together to celebrate Alfie’s life over the past month has been truly remarkable and the impact that he has had on so many people is very clear.

“His family and close friends would like to thank everyone for their support and love during this time.”

Anger at gas work plans on Camberwell high-rise

By Kit Heren news@southwarknews.co.uk Residents have complained after new gas works on a Camberwell housing block appeared to be taking place without proper consultation.

Castlemead, an eighteen-storey tower on the Camberwell Road, is undergoing renovation to relocate the gas riser to the outside of the building.

Consultation with residents has been going on for months, with many raising possible safety objections.

But resident John Scahill was dismayed to see that some works appeared to be going ahead in September, and complained to Southwark Council in correspondence

seen by the News.

He said: "There's some of us that just don't think they've done enough work to understand the layout of the block and how we're living here.

"I don't want to go on about Grenfell [the tower where 72 people died in a June 2017 fire] but it does show the importance of listening to residents.

We're the ones that live here, we're the ones who understand how things really work."

Southwark Council told a residents' meeting in February that an external gas riser would be fitted with antitamper mechanisms and other safety measures.

An external gas riser is considered safe by experts, provided authorities adhere to rigorous and frequent safety

checks.

Former senior British Gas engineer and consultant Barrie Church wrote in a 2013 paper on external gas supplies in tower blocks: "Risers... need to be suitably located, supported and protected against undue risk from accidental damage, tampering and vandalism.

"Above- round steel pipework has to be protected against corrosion".

Southwark Council said that work on the Castlemead gas riser had now been halted and that another consultation with residents would take place.

Councillor Kieron Williams, as cabinet member for housing management and modernisation, before being appointed council leader said: “I am keeping a close eye on the proposed works at Castlemead as it’s extremely important that the right specification and standards are adhered to in all our council buildings, and that residents are comfortable with what is proposed. Plans by SGN for new gas riser works at Castlemead has been put on hold until we have reviewed their site plans, drawings and risk assessment and their fire risk assessment documents. There will be a consultation with all residents once we have received the requested information from SGN. I apologise to residents for any inconvenience, but I want to make sure we are doing this as thoroughly as possible.”

Police investigating stranger rape broadcast a TV appeal and release CCTV footage

kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Detectives investigating a rape in Kennington Gardens have released CCTV footage and held a reconstruction of the attack on TV last week.

A reconstruction of the attack was featured on BBC Crimewatch Roadshow last Friday, 11 September.

A CCTV image of a man they wish to speak to has been released by detectives investigating the attack which happened between 2am and 2.20am on Sunday, 29 December last year in the area of Kennington Park Road.

Police said the victim, a woman in her 20s, was walking in the street when she

was approached by an unknown man who attacked her.

The victim, who also suffered a blow to the head, was taken to a London hospital as a precaution and later discharged. She is being supported by specialist officers.

Detective Inspector Ian Kenward of the Central South Safeguarding Command Unit, said: “Enquiries are ongoing and we are keen to speak to the man in the footage. We are urging anyone who may have been in the area or who recognises him to contact police.”

By Kit Heren news@southwarknews.co.uk Dog owners who do not stop their pets biting postal workers’ fingers though the letter box can now be sent to prison for up to five years – whether they were at home during the attack or not.

The High Court ruling comes as dog attacks on postal workers in southeast London more than doubled in just one year, according to official figures.

Attacks in the SE postcode, which includes Southwark, went up from fifteen in 2018/nineteen to 31 in 2019/20, according to the Royal Mail.

The new ruling, made as a clarification of the Dangerous Dogs Act, took place in May but reporting restrictions were only lifted in September.

Royal Mail brought a legal case after 2,445 postmen and women were injured by dogs in just a year.

Some 650 postal workers have been attacked by dogs when posting mail through the letterbox since 2013.

Postwoman Angela Chapman said: “I was delivering mail on a new route and posted a letter through a letterbox. I wasn’t aware of a dog at the property and it didn’t bark as I approached the door. My hand didn’t actually go through the letterbox when I posted the mail, but the dog instantly latched on to the letter and pulled my hand into the letterbox.

“It bit onto my three fingers and wouldn’t let go. The dog’s owner didn’t come to my aid, so I had to literally pull my hand out of the

dog’s grip. I went into shock and some neighbours who had heard me screaming called an ambulance and I was taken to hospital.

“I suffered irreversible nerve damage to my ring finger and have been left with a permanent tingling in my finger that gets worse in the winter. Also, the scar tissue means I can’t bend my fingers properly. Even as a dog owner, I am very wary of strange dogs now.

“The attack still affects me now, eight years on. Even if the smallest of dogs looks as though it is going to approach me, I start shaking and sweating. A simple letterbox gate would have prevented this happening to me.”

The law does not just apply to postal workers but anyone who was "lawfully visiting" the premises, like someone posting leaflets through doors.

The ruling means that dog owners are likely to have to place a small cage around the postbox on the inside of the door.

Any dog that is found to have attacked someone in this way will be put down unless the owner can prove it is no longer dangerous.

Dr Shaun Davis, Royal Mail safety director, said: “We know that the majority of dog owners are responsible and will do all they can to ensure their pet doesn’t harm anyone.

“However, even the most lovable dog can be a danger to postal staff.

Dogs are territorial by nature and if they feel they need to protect their family, they can become unpredictable.”

Canada Water station was dramatically evacuated last week as police searched for a man who was reported to have a weapon.

Commuters were ushered from the station shortly before 4pm Thursday

afternoon after reports of a person with an offensive weapon.

Police swooped on the station, and found a knife left at the scene.

Trains were forbidden from stopping at the station sparking travel chaos, as officers searched the area for any suspects.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said on Thursday: “Officers were called to Canada Water Underground station at 3.44pm today following reports of a person with an offensive weapon.

“The station was evacuated and trains were put on non-stop while

officers searched the area. A knife was recovered and officers are working to identify the suspects.

“The station has now been reopened.”

Police were still searching for man, they said in their latest update before the News went to press.

One witness spoke of their concern on social media: “Something happened / happening at Canada Water Station – station evacuated and shut and lots of police there.

“Worth avoiding if possible.” A heavy police presence was also reported around Surrey Quays.

Surrey Quays leisure centre creates hub to help local start-ups in SE16 A community business hub has been revamped in Surrey Quays leisure centre to help small start-ups get back on their feet after coronavirus lockdown.

The space, called Thrive, offers business support and advice to SE16 residents. The redesign provides individual, affordable offices, meeting rooms and creative spaces for local entrepreneurs, with the aim of allowing them to meet the challenge posed by coronavirus.

The initiative, supported by developer British Land and run by Tree Shepherd, is due to reopen on September 21. It is already home to a range of businesses, including a filmmaker and a cocktail business.

“We are so pleased to be opening our doors again and offering these amazing new self-contained offices and makerspaces,” said Tree Shepherd CEO, Colin Crooks.

“This year has been an absolute horror –small businesses

film-maker’s fundraiser to help children with epilepsy A Bermondsey film-maker and artist is fundraising for the Evelina London Children’s Hospital following his experience with epilepsy in childhood.

Richard Miller was a patient at Guy’s between 1964 and 1971 for his childhood epilepsy.

He has not had a fit since 1971, but takes medication daily, and says he wants to raise money for the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity in recognition of the care he received.

“Epilepsy can be frightening, no matter what age the sufferer, but it can be especially difficult for young children,” he said.

“I was lucky to have grown out of the

condition by my teens and I have been able to lead an unrestricted life.”

The artist, who has won a National Portrait Gallery competition for a photograph of Al’s Cafe in Bermondsey, and who has also exhibited at Southwark Cathedral, is raffling one of his artworks as part of the fundraiser.

The 68cm x 45cm print of the Shard and Guy’s Hospital is normally worth £400, and will be donated to one random person who donates to the fundraiser.

Money raised will go towards research regarding epilepsy in children.

Scott Johnson A Bermondsey man has set up a men’s only walking group to try and battle the stigma surrounding mental health.

Lifelong SE16 resident, Scott Johnson, started the ‘Proper Blokes

Club’ at the start of this month, which will meet twice weekly to walk along the Thames.

The 33-year-old hopes that walking can provide a breakthrough to men who are reluctant to talk about their feelings, and provide a community for men to walk and talk.

“A lot of men are quite guarded, even with their close friends,” he said.

“It’s called the proper blokes’ club because we’re trying to break down those stereotypes.

“We’re trying to add to a man’s arsenal, to get them to be able to answer questions about how they’re feeling. It’s very hard to get men around in a circle talking about how they’re feeling.”

Scott, a dad to three daughters,

said he had experienced poor mental health beginning at 25 which had inspired him to set up the walk and talk group.

“Before that I was just a happy-golucky 25-year-old,” he said. “But my mind was all over the place really, it’s only been the past few years that I’ve got back on track really.”

Scott is currently doing a morning walk from HMS Belfast to Rotherhithe every Tuesday morning at 8am and Thursday evening at 6pm.

He plans to carry on the initiative for at least a year, and will leaflet local boozers to reach older men who are not on social media.

almshouses for the Blue

A Southwark charity has broken ground on 57 new almshouses in Bermondsey which will provide affordable homes for residents over 60.

United St Saviour’s charity began work on the project at Bermondsey’s Southwark Park Road last Friday. It is due for completion at the end of next year, and will see 57 new homes created for elderly residents with a link to the borough.

In a nod to the area’s heritage, the almshouse will be called ‘Appleby Blue’ - after one of the charity’s earliest benefactors, Dorothy Appleby, and ‘the Blue’.

“The launch of Appleby Blue is a hugely exciting day for us, marking the beginning of an

important new chapter in our history which has been years in the planning,” said charity CEO, Martyn Craddock.

“Our aim is to provide exceptional housing for Southwark’s older people and to demonstrate the positive contribution that older people bring to the community and place they live. It is a true legacy for future generations and we are incredibly proud of it.”

The project aims to provide “modern, independent sheltered housing” with an outdoor space for use by the whole community.

The charity also runs two other almshouses: Hopton Gardens, behind the Tate Modern, and St Saviour’s Court in Purley.

bermondsey’s Lily jumps for joy after all all clear from brain tumour A Bermondsey woman has raised thousands of pounds for a brain tumour charity by leaping from an airplane.

Lily McCorry, from Jamaica Road, was diagnosed with the tumour in November 2017, aged just 21.

Nearly three years later Ms McCorry said doctors had worked out the tumour is under control and is benign.

She was so filled with gratitude at the work of the Brain Tumour Charity in supporting her that she decided to raise money with a skydive.

She did the jump in Headcorn in Kent on Saturday, September 12.

Ms McCorry told the News: “When I got the go-ahead from the doctors I

just wanted to do something to raise money and give back to an amazing charity.

When asked if she was nervous, she said: “It happened so quick, I didn’t even have time to be nervous.

“I’ve always said I wanted to jump out of a plane – always. So I thought ‘why not take the opportunity to do it’?”

Ms McCorry set her initial fundraising target at £1,500 but donations have topped £2,200.

“I’m really happy with the amount I’ve raised – I didn’t even think I’d get to the initial target of £1,500 so I’m very happy with the £2,200,” she said.

“I’m really grateful to everyone that’s helped out.”

A Bermondsey man shaved his head for the Millwall Lionesses after a suggestion from a barmaid at his local boozer.

Bermondsey’s George Clay - who is known as Cass to most - shaved his head to raise money for new bibs for the Millwall Lionesses.

The pub, the Ancient Foresters in Southwark Park Road, put a ‘before’ picture of George behind the bar to encourage people to donate.

It raised £203 for the bibs. More than £100 was also raised by punters at The Windsor on the Old Kent Road, through scratch cards.

The bibs were successfully delivered

to the Lionesses on Sunday and Monday. One woman who helped to organise the good deed, Ellen, said: “We were trying to raise a bit of money for charity so that the Lionesses could have their own bibs.

“So Lisa from behind the bar came up with this idea, and George was super happy to do it.”

Ellen’s partner, Kelly Webster, who played as a goalie for the Lionesses, took the bibs to the team. “They were well and truly happy to get the bibs,” she said.

“It was just a good little fundraiser.”

Money that was left over after buying the 100 bibs went on sponsoring one of the team’s players, she added.

COVID, Brexit - Johnson and his incompetent team

outhwark’s rising Covid infection rate is increasingly a cause for concern.

It is paramount you and your family continue to look out for one another and take every precaution to try and prevent the spread, especially in the face of repeat Government failures to provide sufficient testing capacity or to contact people known to have been in pubs with someone found to have Covid.

These basic functions of Government, which are about keeping us all safe and could also help build public confidence in getting back to work or knowing children are protected at school, have been neglected by Johnson and his incompetent team.

Not that Johnson or his team ever take responsibility, as we’ve seen for months. Instead of telling us when he and his Education Secretary first knew

about the problems with exam results, the Prime Minister tried to blame it on a ‘mutant algorithm’ when his team were aware of but failed to change it in time to ensure your children and grandchildren were not let down.

When people in Southwark are told to travel to ‘walk-in’ centres in Scotland for Covid tests, they blame it on too many people taking tests in London instead of focusing on boosting capacity in our capital and most populous city.

In my role on the Work and Pensions Select Committee I have seen the Government fail to take responsibility for continual Universal Credit problems.

Ministers’ latest response to our recommendations ignored nineteen suggestions, including trying to restore help to people who had support cut during the Covid crisis.

Citizens’ Assemblies and a ‘frequent flier’ levy

I

magine there’s something exciting in the post for once.

It’s a letter inviting you to join a Citizens’ Assembly.

It’s a bit like jury service, the letter explains. A group of randomly selected people hear and discuss evidence about an important issue before agreeing on recommendations. In Ireland, assemblies like this helped break political deadlock on abortion and marriage equality. Instead of politicians trying to predict what will appeal to voters, citizens work out together what is necessary and fair.

And the problem we need to solve? In short: how can we keep global temperatures from rising to a point where life cannot survive?

The first national ‘Climate Assembly’ took place in a year that has seen not only the pandemic but also devastating fires, loss of wildlife, crop failures and, here in the UK, heatwaves and flash floods. The 108 members have recently published clear and practical recommendations for reducing carbon emissions from homes, food and transport.

Take the example of flying. All

When we were all told to stay home, we know Johnson let his special advisor Dominic Cummings off the hook for driving hundreds of miles to ‘test his eyesight’ in Barnard Castle.

The Tory claim to be the ‘party of law and order’ is dead. We know Johnson lied to the public and to Her Majesty when he unlawfully prorogued Parliament, but for a UK Prime Minister to now tell our country and the world openly that his Government will break the law is his most shameful act yet and undermines our credibility internationally in a way not seen since Eden’s calamitous term in the 1950s.

Johnson’s excuse is that he did not understand his own legislation last year when he claimed he had ‘got Brexit done’. Brexit is not done and he should never have patronised people with such a simplistic approach.

Brexit continues to divide and risk the future of the United Kingdom and to divide our country from our allies, with the US now signalling there will be no future trade deal.

In contrast, our local council here in Southwark has stepped up during this crisis and led for London under Councillor Peter John. I would again like to publicly acknowledge his real leadership throughout the pandemic and last decade stewarding our council as it faced year after year of cuts from Cameron, Clegg, May and Johnson, as well as an increased workload as a result of national Ministers’ failures and irresponsibility.

Peter John is now stepping down as Leader and deserves our thanks and best wishes. I welcome Councillor Kieron Williams as the new leader and look forward to working with him and his whole team.

Southwark residents suffer from the noise and air pollution of hundreds of flights a day going to and from Heathrow and City Airport. But did you know that over half of the UK population does not fly abroad at all? Just 15% of the population take 70% of the flights, and there’s no tax on jet fuel (unlike petrol for cars).

The Climate Assembly has proposed a ‘frequent flier’ levy: the more someone flies, the more they pay.

While the idea has been around for a while, it’s now clear that it has wide support. www.climateassembly.uk Some London boroughs – including Camden and Lambeth – have set up citizens’ assemblies to work on their local plans to cut carbon emissions.

Unfortunately, Southwark Council has (so far) decided against this approach. You can instead contribute ideas here, with a conference promised for the autumn: southwarkclimateideas. commonplace.is/ Assemblies are key to the vital cross-party ‘Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill’ introduced into Parliament by Caroline Lucas MP last week www.ceebill.uk.

It would enable imaginative responses to these emergencies, and ensure a fair transition, with financial help and retraining for people working in sectors like aviation.

At the time of writing, none of our Southwark MPs were listed as supporters. Why not drop them a line, inviting them to play their part?

These Road restrictions have made it very difficult for locals to traverse the traffic-prone areas. 24/7 bus lanes for major Southwark Roads including Tower Bridge Road and Borough High Street It was necessary to slow the traffic to make it safer for everyone: we all have to share the road and that is what matters. I experienced the roads during COVID19 lockdown back in March, when we were all told to stay at home. The only vehicles on the roads were being driven by key workers.

The new improvements that have been implemented were introduced for the benefit of all road users. It will take some getting used to, much like the ways we are learning to give each other 2 metres of space as pedestrians, the roads we drive on also need to take that into account.

Despite all the moaning and complaining, traffic is still moving, and we are going to have to accept the new ways we navigate our roads.

My mother, Jean, died of sarcoma cancer nine years ago. Yet if she were alive today, she would still face the same excruciating wait for a diagnosis.

Delays to diagnoses are costing lives and devastating families across the UK. This has to change.

Shockingly, one in three (30%) sarcoma patients in the UK face an agonising wait of six-months or more for an accurate diagnosis of their cancer after first seeking medical help. One in six (17%) patients wait a year before being diagnosed.

This delay is unacceptable. Time is something those affected by sarcoma can ill afford.

Sarcoma is one of the least understood but most aggressive forms of cancer and only 55% of patients survive more than five years. My mother fought the odds to survive for three years after being diagnosed and I count myself lucky to have had that time with her.

Put simply, late diagnosis costs lives, which is why I’m supporting the calls for change detailed in a new report launched by national bone and soft tissue cancer charity Sarcoma UK. Poor awareness, coupled with a complex diagnostic pathway, mean sarcomas often go misdiagnosed or are simply ignored and dismissed.

No one should ever find themselves in the position my mother and family did.

People are needlessly losing their lives to this disease and will continue to do so if change doesn’t take place. The starting point for that begins here.

Covid tests are essential for all other schemes

T

he lack of coronavirus testing has dominated the headlines this week – and many fear that schools across the country will be forced to close again.

The true picture in Southwark, like elsewhere, is completely reliant on the tests. Without the tests, the track and trace system and other initiatives to contain the virus become somewhat obsolete.

Our front page story last week of a Dulwich resident being told to go to Scotland for a walk-in coronavirus test, with more told to go to Wales, Oldham and the Isle of Wight was mirrored by similar articles across the nation. The question on everyone’s lips is why did the government allow this to happen, when it knew demand would increase as more people returned to work and children to school?

Southwark Council’s new leader Kieron Williams told the News that the problem with central government approach to the pandemic from the outset has been too heavily reliant on national providers, from PPE to those currently carrying out the test. In the worst hit areas of the country, in places like Bolton, the council there have said that these providers are brought in and they are informed after, with many residents struggling to know what is happening and where to go. Surely the government should be investing in and trusting council and local health providers up and down the country to take the lead on these services? After all, they are the local experts and have much of the vital information

about residents at their finger-tips.

At the beginning of the pandemic, Southwark’s then Council leader Peter John, who also chairs London Councils, was careful not to criticise the government response too heavily, but as the weeks and months of lockdown continued and essential communication became more and more of a problem he made clear his concerns.

This is yet another example of the government failing to work effectively with local authorities.

In this borough two pilots are now underway that do show a commitment to take control of the pandemic at a local level. Southwark is one of four councils recruited by Public Health England to carry out local contact tracing, with officers being given instructions to even knock on people to trace those not responding to track and trace.

Alongside Hammersmith and Fulham, Newham, the City of London and Hackney, Southwark was selected on a priority basis, taking into consideration case rates, positivity rates and readiness to implement. In this week’s paper we highlight the second pilot to start today which will see a council scheme where businesses such as café, pubs and restaurants will be rated for their social distancing measures, track and trace arrangements and cleanliness.

It will be important to see how both these schemes are implemented by the council and know they can be then used elsewhere. However, without an adequate level of testing these measures will be hard to evaluate.

The object was set to enter the earth’s atmosphere on Thursday. Scientists say the rock is roughly the size of Southwark’s London Bridge.

A note for the general committee’s agenda noted Cllr John’s stint at the helm blunty: “We acknowledge Peter’s work in the role.”

“Special thanks to [Camberwell and Peckham CLP] for this tribute,” responded Cllr John. “It really is too special!”

playhouse opens where it left off

On March 16 2020, The Last Five Years at Southwark Playhouse was cut short owing to the global pandemic. This October, Southwark Playhouse welcomes back the same production to pick up exactly where it left off (with added Perspex and socially distanced audiences), writes Michael Holland...

Jason Robert Brown’s Drama Desk Award-winning musical, The Last Five Years, is an emotionally powerful and intimate show about two New Yorkers who fall in and out of love over the course of five years.

The musical’s unconventional structure unfolds as Cathy tells her story in reverse, from the end of their turbulent relationship, whilst Jamie tells his story chronologically from the spark of their initial meeting. The two characters meet only once, at their wedding in the middle of the show.

This iconic musical returns to London following its run in March, with the actors onstage at all times and playing the piano to add a new narrative dimension to the story, accompanied by a full four piece band.

Molly Lynch and Oli Higginson will return to their roles of Cathy and Jamie in The Last Five Years at Southwark Playhouse this October. They will be in the same support bubble which means that the show will not operate under

social distancing.

Zombie Ghouls in Bermondsey

Richard Heller is an ‘author, freelance journalist, screenwriter, speech writer, cricket writer, book editor’ residing in a converted school in Bermondsey where he has used 2020 to put his ‘crazed memories of lockdown’ into his latest novel, The Prisoner of Rubato Towers, writes Michael Holland...

Besides having on his business card ‘Anything written for money’ he was once asked to be a writer on a film called Cycle Sluts Versus The Zombie Ghouls, which was enough for me to know I needed to meet this man.

Over coffee in Bermondsey Square this veteran of the typewriter explained the meaning of Rubato, then regaled me with tales of being chief of staff to Denis Healey (former Deputy Leader of the Labour party) and Gerald Kaufman (then Shadow Home Secretary) in the 1980s, before being dismissed after attacking Labour’s unilateralist defence policy in an article in the Times.

And, of course, the zombie tale I had been dying to hear that was never going to end well for the man who wrote comedy and satire at Balliol College, Oxford before going on to be the Mail’s resident humorist. Obviously saving the best for last he told of how he had suggested introducing a vegetarian zombie who asks for the vegan alternative while his colleagues tuck into human flesh. ‘I put this idea to

the Monday morning script conference.

The producer said, in genuine anger, “You have not respected the artistic integrity of Cycle Sluts” and I was fired on the spot.’

All this with more than a glint of mischief in his eyes.

But we were here to talk about The Prisoner of Rubato Towers, which he gives me the blurb for: ‘A wild escape from lockdown through fantasy, satire and sheer comic genius.

Richard Heller is a man of letters, few of them answered, and a cricketer in the sunset of a career which never really had a dawn. He has been confined to his premises in Rubato Towers, London SE, which he shares with a mouse and two fornicating foxes. He gives regular piano recitals to his neighbours and they bang on the walls and ceilings to hear more – sometimes half the night, they just won’t let go. He has been free of COVID19 but suffers from a regular Mystery Virus, producing flu-like symptoms, which he named after Peter Mandelson. He is writing an autobiography, full of the famous people who knew him, called My Goodness, How I Roared! and compiling a set of upbeat homilies called Happy Talk, tasks regularly interrupted by the tiresome Prodnose. He faces competition in the upbeat homily market from the Resident Mouse. His entourage expands to include a poetic cockroach who claims to be the famous archy and a bridge-playing goldfish.

Here is an excerpt from the very early days: ‘I shall miss my recent excursions to local Arabic shops (which appear to have better and nimbler supply chains than many household names) and the excitement of buying tinned goods with no English script in the hope that they will contain something like the illustration. Otherwise my routine of time-wasting on Twitter, footling on Facebook, nestling into Netflix and naps between naps will be little affected.’

All that and more for under seven quid.

The name of Dr Alfred Salter is well known by Bermondsey folk, even if many today may be largely unaware of who he was, or what he and his wife Ada did for the area and its long-suffering people.

Probably even less is known about his politics, beyond that he was a Member of Parliament for the Independent Labour Party (ILP), and a committed pacifist, writes Gary Cartwright...

The ILP was, after its foundation in 1893, led by Keir Hardie, who went on to found the Labour Party we know today. The ILP was affiliated to the Labour Party from 1906 to 1932, but it was always considerably farther to the left.

This leftist position - the ILP defined itself as “centrist-Marxist” - made the party interesting to the Soviet Union, which was busily engaged in seeking out fellow travellers in other countries. And so it was that Dr Salter found himself, in 1931, on a boat bound for Moscow as part of a delegation of doctors and scientists, to study healthcare in Stalin’s Soviet utopia, accompanied by, amongst others, Dr Somerville Hastings, Member of Parliament for Reading.

Arriving in Moscow during an outbreak of plague, Doctors Salter and Hastings were immediately struck by the fact that in contrast to the presence of well-equipped hospitals, Russians appeared indifferent to the need for basic sanitary precautions.

They reported a lack of any proper sewage system in many towns, with open trenches depositing effluent into streams and rivers from which water was drawn for drinking.

Whilst sailing on the Volga, during a delay in the city of NizhnyNovgorod, Dr Salter wrote in his diary: "Immediately adjacent to the quay, one of these open sewers was discharging itself a few yards from the stern of the boat. I watched the water supply of the vessel being pumped from the river into the storage tanks.

“It was drawn from a spot not more than twelve or fifteen feet from where the black, foetid excrement-laden liquid was trickling in.

“Remember that for the next five days the only water we should be able to obtain for drinking and washing, for cleaning our teeth and so on, was the turbid yellowish fluid which came from the lavatory basin taps after settling in the tanks.

“We lifted the lid of one of these and examined the interior. There was a deposit of about 6 inches of black slime and mud on the bottom. No wonder that Russia is riddled with Typhoid and at times with Cholera!"

The two doctors were appalled by the living conditions of the Russian peasantry: he noted on the Volga journey that between 1000 - 1,500 were accommodated in the steamer's hold along with the cargo. “I have never seen anything like it anywhere in the world." he wrote. "Hundreds and hundreds of poor folk are huddled together in the semi-darkness, lying on top of their worldly belongings.

“Often the steerage quarters were so crowded that the people literally lay on top of and across one another.

The stench of unwashed, perspiring bodies was suffocating, while the sanitary conditions...!"

Poverty in Moscow in the 1930s endured hardships and deprivation that exceeded what would be experienced even by the poorest folk of Bermondsey at that time.

He paid tribute to the ability of the Russians to make sacrifices for future benefit - this was the first of Stalin's five year plans - and the Soviet Union was undergoing a period of rapid collectivisation and industrialisation.

Whilst many advances were made, particularly in the area of education and technology, this first five year plan will be chiefly remembered for the liquidation of the Kulaks, the landowning farmers.

More than 720,000 people were executed, and millions more perished in the "Gulag", the Soviet penal system, which even had special camps for the wives and children of the ‘enemies of the state’. Five to seven million more perished in the politically engineered famines, which Ukrainians to this day

remember as ‘Holodomor’.

In a letter to the Manchester Guardian, another of Stalin’s guests, the Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw, described reports of famine as ‘slander’. But Dr Salter saw things very differently. Where Shaw saw a "hopeful and enthusiastic workingclass, self-respecting, free up to the limits imposed on them by nature and a terrible inheritance from tyranny and incompetence of their former rulers, developing public works, increasing health services, extending education, achieving the economics independence of woman and the security of the child..." Salter was to report appalling conditions.

He considered the Russian people as being wretchedly poor, immoral, promiscuous, deprived of the most basic necessities. He condemned "The absolute and ruthless suppression of all views contrary to those held by the

government..." and saw no prospect to an end to the tyranny. He drew attention to the way in which critics of the state or its ruling elite could expect to be dealt with; "You literally disappear, and you are not heard of again", he said.

It might be argued that the promiscuity that Salter described was a result of the moral relativism of Marxism-Leninism. Marx held that any moral system was simply a product of the dominant class, and that it would be the movement of history, or progress, that would settle moral questions, not a fixed, universal standard. The revolution therefore swept aside not only the bourgeoisie, the intelligentsia, and the Church, but everything that they believed in. Their moral values, indeed their entire belief system, had to be eliminated on point of principle. Marx held that the future could not be built until the past

and present are destroyed.

Dr Salter was not alone in seeing through the lies and propaganda of his Soviet hosts. Gareth Jones, Foreign Affairs advisor to the Prime Minister visited Russia and Ukraine on three occasions between 1930 - 33, to report on the success or otherwise of Stalin's five year plan. Alerting the world to the Ukrainian famine, as did Malcolm Muggeridge, then a young journalist himself.

Dr Salter himself was never an ideologue. He would never have compromised his ideals or his devotion to the people under his care, in the interests of politics. He was a visionary, and his legacy remains today in the parks, the playgrounds, the homes, in the schools, and in the tree-lined streets of Bermondsey.

FISHER’S FAIRYTALE FA Cup run goes on after they defeated Tooting & Mitcham United 3-1 on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw in normal time last Saturday.

The Fish were six minutes away from going

out before Josh Biddlecombe levelled. It was Fisher’s second equaliser after Christian Udo had cancelled out Sinn’Kaye Christie’s opener to leave it 1-1 at the break.

The crowd of 398 at Imperial Fields in Tooting were then put through the emotional grinder as the game went to penalties.

And Michael Sarpong’s spot-kick proved to be the clincher as Tooting’s Daryl Coleman fired the next penalty over the bar in front of 93 away fans.

Fisher bank a welcome £1,444 for winning this round. The Rotherhithe side travel to Cray Wanderers in first round qualifying next Wednesday.

Stansfeld’s historic FA Cup adventure comes to an end

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk STANSFELD’S FIRST-ever FA Cup journey came to an end in the preliminary round as they were beaten 3-2 by Little Common last weekend.

Stansfeld went behind in the sixth minute after Stefan Kempton fouled in the box and Russell Eldridge fired the visitors in front from twelve yards.

But Stansfeld weren’t fazed and were level just eight minutes later when Ollie Milton created space in the penalty area before angling a shot into the bottom corner.

The frantic pace of the game continued and the hosts took a 2-1 lead 26 minutes in. Frankie Beale played a through-ball that split the Little Common defence to put Ryan Hassan through on goal. Hassan was fouled, and Sam Ryan scored the resulting spot-kick.

Milton almost made it 3-1 when he turned and shot but his effort hit the post. Stansfeld were denied again just before the break as Freddie Cray’s header was cleared off the line.

The half-time interval halted Stansfeld’s momentum and they were pegged back thirteen minutes into the second period. It was a lapse in concentration from the home defence, allowing Adam Smith to break the offside trap and slot past Charlie Cottrell to make it 2-2.

There was another blow for Stansfeld ten

minutes later when Ryan, the captain, was given a straight red card for a late tackle.

And just two minutes later they were behind.

Stansfeld gave away a soft free-kick, and Eldridge got his second with his shot taking two deflections on its way in, giving Cottrell little chance.

Stansfeld rallied as they looked for the equaliser. Billy Shinners saw his header shave the crossbar in the dying minutes, before Cray crossed but Milton was denied a tap-in through some excellent defending from the away side.

That was the last chance in a game Stansfeld will feel they should have won. The club receive £491 to add to the £1,125 from winning in the extra preliminary round.

In the club’s other results, Stansfeld’s reserves lost 4-1 at home to Kings Hill, the consolation goal scored by Mark McKenna.

The third team beat Fleetdown United Reserves 4-1 at home, thanks to Connor O’Boyle’s hat-trick and one from Cameron Macmillan.

Lions fail to make grade Championship report September 12, 2020

By John Kelly at the Den johnk@southwarknews.co.uk THE SUN was out at The Den last Saturday but there was little else to brighten the mood as Millwall opened their 2020-21 Championship campaign with a dour 0-0 draw against Stoke.

This felt more like a cloudy first day back at school when the mind is still on the summer holidays and the brain struggles to reengage.

Simple passes from Millwall players went astray, the home side met traffic jams whichever avenue they tried to go down, and it ended with an assessment of ‘must do better’ from boss Gary Rowett.

Millwall were without Ryan Woods, Mahlon Romeo and Troy Parrott, and it showed. Respectively, that gives you less creativity from deep, less of an attacking outlet on the right, and less of a goal threat.

There was just one flicker of excitement in the opening 45 minutes.

Jed Wallace found Scott Malone on the left and after skipping past Tommy Smith into space the left wing-back picked out Jon Dadi Bodvarsson inside on the edge of the box. Bodvarsson took a decent first touch before limply shooting at goal. It summed up the striker’s and Millwall’s afternoon.

The Iceland forward’s four goals in 32 games is a disappointing return.

Stoke were marginally more threatening. Bart Bialkowski came sharply off his line to deny Sam Clucas and Tyrese Campbell saw a shot deflected into the side-netting in the first half.

Still Stoke were stubborn. Like in the first half, only once did it open up for Millwall. Wallace sprinted into space down the right and the ball across the edge of the box needed to be in front of Connor Mahoney. Instead it went too square, Mahoney had to check his run, and Smith blocked the winger’s shot.

The Potters thought they could have had a penalty in the last minute when Shaun Hutchinson appeared to barge into Jacob Brown. Instead Brown was booked, much to the annoyance of Stoke boss Michael O’Neill, who later called the decision “bizarre”.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk CONNOR MAHONEY concedes he needs a “massive” season after a disappointing first campaign with Millwall.

Mahoney, 23, arrived for a seven-figure sum from Bournemouth last season but started only fourteen league games, scoring twice.

Winger Mahoney showed glimpses of his talent and two goals in two games at the start of January hinted at a turning point.

But he couldn’t consistently hit those attacking heights and was in and out of the side for the rest of the campaign.

Mahoney is targeting a much more positive 2020-21 in a Millwall side he believes should be fighting for a top-six place.

“I scored a few of goals, got a few assists, but last season was stop-start for me,” Mahoney says. “This season is massive for me, I need to play more games, create more goals and make more of an impact.

“It’s difficult when you’re not playing as much as you’d like to then get thrown in and you’re trying to make an impact. The gaffer knows what I can do, I showed it last season in glimpses when I came off the bench, I can change the game.

“But I don’t feel too much pressure, I just try to play my own game. I feel strong, I’ve had a good pre-season. I felt confident coming into this season and hopefully we can achieve something good together.

“At the turn of the year I got two goals in two games as well as two assists and I was hoping to build on that. Then Covid came and things went into lockdown.

“I worked hard over the time off and when we came back I thought I had a good impact on the team coming off the bench.

The last few games I got a few assists, a goal. I was disappointed with how the season ended but I worked hard again over the time off and I’m hoping to hit the ground running.

“We’re still hurting from last season but this season’s come around quickly so we haven’t been able to dwell on it too much.

The lads are positive, we’ll stick together and try to play how we know we can. If we

do that we’ll be in and around [the playoffs].”

Mahoney feels boss Gary Rowett’s preferred 5-2-3 formation, with the wide attackers getting possession further up the pitch, benefits him.

“The gaffer’s spoken to me about getting on the ball more because I can create goals and I want to score a few more this season,” Mahoney adds. “There’s little point me getting the ball deep in my own half when you need me, Jed [Wallace], Mason [Bennett], Troy [Parrott] up the other end trying to create.

“So the 5-2-3 formation suits us to a tee to try and do that. You could see that in the last game of the season, we scored four goals against Huddersfield and looked a threat. Hopefully we can build on that this season with the attacking players showing more what they can do in the final third.

“The new additions have done well since they’ve come in, though obviously Troy has had a little niggle. Hopefully he’ll be out there soon, and we’ve seen what Benno can do from last season. That gives us more firepower going forward if the gaffer wants to change it, there are more

options off the bench. But we need to show that.

“There’s a game almost every few days over the season, so not many players are going to be able to play 46 games, especially after how demanding last season was. That’s why the gaffer’s brought in a few players up top just to give us that option of freshening up the team.

We’ve got lads on the bench who can come in and stake a claim for a starting spot.

“Competition in those forwards areas is what you need to keep everyone pushing each other and keep the standards high.”

Millwall’s next league game at The Den is against Brentford on September 26, with no definitive decision yet on the return of supporters.

Mahoney said: “I don’t enjoy it. We train all week to go and play on a Saturday in front of 20, 30,000 people. Our home games are the best. But now there’s no atmosphere and it’s harder for players to get up for a game. Especially when you’re a front-pressing team, you rely on the fans to give you that extra edge.

“But hopefully they’ll be back soon and be our twelfth man.”

Midfielder back on track Ryan Woods has left difficult Stoke spell behind – but won’t say if he wants permanent Lions move

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk AFTER MILLWALL missed out on the play-offs last season the suspicion was promotion to the Premier League would have been too soon – but don’t suggest that to Ryan Woods.

The Lions were one win from finishing sixth and given their recent play-off and FA Cup pedigree you wouldn’t have put it past them pulling off another shock for just a second-ever promotion to the top flight.

Had the Lions achieved that, not only would they have had the lowestcapacity ground in the Premier League and the lowest transfer budget, but they would have had a little over five weeks from the play-off final to build a squad capable of competing with the likes of Leeds, West Brom and Aston Villa, let alone the daunting prospect of the top six.

Surely, then, better another season in the Championship and if the dream of promotion is achieved next year, more time to prepare for that gargantuan leap?

“You could say that,” Woods considers, “but to be honest I think we’d take only two days off to play in the Premier League. It would be an unbelievable achievement, especially for a club like Millwall.

“

“Our aim is to improve on last season, whether it’s the position or just the performances. We want to grow as a group and that will hopefully lead to the performances being more consistent.

We want to be in and around the top ten and the play-offs.

“As much as I’ve joined because of the gaffer and the environment, I would never come to a club that’s got no ambition to prove people wrong. I’ve always been at that sort of club all my career, apart probably from Stoke.

“We proved ourselves last year and we want to do it again. But we’ll never run before we can walk and get carried away.

“We had a real good go last season but didn’t quite have enough to get there in the end. I think we can be really pleased

with what we achieved.”

Woods made a big impression after joining on loan from Stoke in January.

As soon as the campaign was over there was only ever one club he wanted to return to in 2020-21.

He explained: “I got it done really early, I didn’t see much point messing around and waiting for potential offers elsewhere. I’ve said it before plenty of times, I’m really enjoying being around the place. The environment is great, the lads are brilliant.

“I feel like I’m getting back to my best, which is huge for me. I’m in a good place at Millwall and that’s why I’ve come back for another season. We’ll see what happens after that.

“Everybody could see the more games I played the sharper I was, my passing

range came back to me. Unfortunately I couldn’t play last weekend against my parent club but I’m really looking forward to Rotherham away. If we take four points from the first two league games that will be a good start.”

Woods was signed by Millwall boss Gary Rowett for Stoke in 2018. He fell out of favour under Michael O’Neill, who took over from Rowett’s successor, Nathan Jones, last season.

Woods has been watching the Tottenham documentary, All or Nothing, and is surprised players’ oneto-one meetings with manager Jose Mourinho were included.

“Those conversations are usually kept in-house, so it’s a strange situation with the Tottenham thing,” Woods said.

“All players do [go see the manager] because we all want to play.

“I’m someone who’s played almost every single game since I was 18. So it was much more unknown to me what was going on at Stoke. I wasn’t enjoying it, so it was always the right thing for me to do to go out and play games.

“At Stoke it started off really well for me and things just tailed off for whatever reason. It just never worked out for me. I’m a Millwall player for another season and I’m really looking forward to seeing what we can do this year.

“Everybody is seeing the best of me now. I want to keep playing games, keep improving and hopefully my performances will help the team.”

In his conversations with the media, Rowett has said Woods is key to the change of style he is trying to implement after the more direct play under Neil Harris.

“You’re probably the first person to actually say that to me!” Woods laughs when asked if he feels any pressure.

“I think people knew exactly the type of player I was before I came here. I’m someone who wants to get on the ball and try to make things happen starting from the back, give it to the more attacking players to stick in the back of the net.

“It’s good that we’ve got that about us now, different ways of playing and that will only benefit us going forwards.”

Rowett has been a huge admirer of Woods for a number of years, but the midfielder won’t reveal if he wants to make a permanent switch to south London next summer. “I’m going to take this season as it comes and do my best for Millwall, and we’ll see what happens at the end of it. It’s a long, way away, I just want to enjoy this season first.

“We’ve got more competition for places now. You never want to just be sailing through, though I’ve never been that type of person anyway. It’s always good to have competition for places, it keeps you on your toes. If you have a bad game or two bad games there are always players who can come in and do the job.

“We have that strength in the squad and we want to see where it takes us.”

MILLWALL CLEARED this hurdle with aplomb as they raced past Cheltenham on Tuesday night and into the third round of the EFL Cup next week.

There was never any doubt the Lions would have several lengths to spare against a gamey League Two side that kicked in the second half but had too far to catch up against their thoroughbred opponents.

There were positive performances all round including from those that are jockeying for a regular place in Gary Rowett’s side in this early part of the season.

Connor Mahoney is more of a dressage performer than draught horse, all nimblefooted and neat, and he arguably usually has most to prove in these ties. He showed both sides of his game here, from some sublime skill to his expertly-controlled half-volley finish to put the hosts 2-0 up.

Millwall set up Den tie against either Burnley or Sheffield Utd But then there was that lackadaisical element that is always lurking. And in the empty stadium you could hear Ryan Woods bellowing at him with a quarter of an hour left: “You’re miles off it – come on!” Mahoney needs to show more staying power.

Millwall were going through a bit of wobble at that point but there was little danger of a Devon Loch disaster.

Rowett had named a strong team, with seven changes from the 0-0 draw at Stoke last Saturday. There was lots of experience on the pitch to take care of a League Two side that had lost their opening league game of the season 2-1 at

home to Morecambe.

Ryan Leonard was back in his natural position in central midfield and after this performance Shaun Williams and Ben Thompson might have to be patient to get back into the team. Leonard’s strike from Tom Bradshaw’s lay-off was so sweet it’s a wonder it was just his fourth goal in 62 games for Millwall.

Mahoney had shown his ability early on as he superbly spun away from a challenge in midfield before curling in a right-footed cross that a stretching Bradshaw just failed to reach.

Matt Smith should have headed Millwall in front from a corner but missed the target, and Mahoney’s shot from 30 yards was parried by Josh Griffiths before the goalkeeper pounced on the loose ball.

The hosts went in front 20 minutes in when Smith and Bradshaw combined and Leonard gave Griffiths little chance with a rasping low drive.

Leonard then headed wide and sent a 25-yard effort just over as he sniffed more goals.

Strikers’ returns not a concern

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT isn’t concerned about Tom Bradshaw’s current run without goals – and praised the forward for the “unbelievably unselfish job” he does for the team.

Bradshaw started on the left side of a front three in the 3-1 win against Cheltenham on Tuesday, when he set up Ryan Leonard for the opening goal.

The former Barnsley striker worked tirelessly for the side, with his movement and link-up play giving the Robins plenty of problems.

Bradshaw deserved a goal for his industry, and almost got his first in 22 games late on but his effort went just past the post.

Rowett wants more goals from his side this season to push them towards the play-offs. Jon Dadi Bodvarsson scored two goals in four games after football’s restart in June, but that’s half his total for Millwall in 32 league games including eighteen substitute appearances.

But Rowett isn’t worried about the pair’s output, preferring instead to praise their attitude and contributions to winning performances.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a concern,” Rowett said. “The players are working hard. They know the current scenario that we need more goals. We need more goals from across the front positions but also from everywhere else in the team.

“Someone like Bradders, you don’t have to tell him how long he’s not scored for.

What I would say is when he’s needed to he’s done an unbelievably unselfish job for the team.

“And he’s been in winning teams, it’s not like his not scoring has stopped us winning.

“But of course as a striker they need to do what they’re paid to do, which is put the ball in the back of the net. They know that and I’m sure they’ll get back on the score sheet sometime pretty soon.”

Cheltenham had barely been a threat until out of nothing two minutes before half-time Alfie May shot just wide and then beat Bart Bialkowski with a low finish, but the offside flag was up.

Millwall doubled their lead in the 48th minute. Shane Ferguson – making his first appearance of the season – got in behind the visiting defence on the left before his cross flicked off a Cheltenham head, and Mahoney brilliantly controlled a rightfooted drive that flashed past Griffiths into the top left corner.

Mahlon Romeo made his comeback after a groin problem hampered him towards the end of last season. He showed little sign of rustiness as he constantly demanded the ball on the right and his substitution for Jiri Skalak was preplanned. Romeo should be available to start at Rotherham on Saturday.

Ferguson got his second assist in the 62nd minute, though it wasn’t intentional as he mis-hit a volley and Smith was quick to react and prod home. That’s two goals in two starts for Smith this season as he

picks up from where he left off in the last campaign.

The Lions were cruising towards the winning post at that point, but with 21 minutes the punters were looking nervously at their slips as Finn Azaz fired in from outside the box.

Azaz curled towards the bottom corner seven minutes later and Bialkowski was at full stretch to turn the ball around the post.

Millwall were slightly stretched and Shaun Hutchinson and Murray Wallace made important blocks. But the home side stayed comfortably clear and Bradshaw almost added a fourth only for his low shot to go just past the post.

Rowett’s side head into round three and will have to get out of the stalls well against Premier League Burnley or Sheffield United (due to play Thursday, September 17).

The going has been good for Millwall so far in this campaign as they have the bit between the teeth heading to the New York Stadium this weekend.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett has insisted his side’s performances over the first few weeks of the season won’t affect his transfer plans for the current window.

Rowett says he is “pretty happy” with his squad, but if Millwall receive acceptable offers for fringe players then the Lions would look to replace them.

Millwall were without Ryan Woods, Billy Mitchell, Mahlon Romeo and Troy Parrott for their opening league game against Stoke last weekend.

With Ryan Leonard filling in at right wing-back, that meant Rowett only

had two senior midfielders, Shaun Williams and Ben Thompson.

That central area is strengthened this weekend at Rotherham as Woods returns, while Romeo’s potential availability means Rowett has the option of using Leonard in his more natural position.

If the Lions don’t get their first league win of the 2020-21 campaign at the New York Stadium, that won’t mean a snap change of plans at The Den. “I think they’re fairly fixed anyway,” Rowett said. “We know where we are budget-wise, we know what we can do if a player becomes available.

“If we’re in a situation where there’s a bit of interest in one or two players on the fringes then of course we’ll try to do more.

“I don’t think our plan will necessarily change, but whether we can actually execute those plans will depend on certain things.

“I’m pretty happy. If you look back to last Saturday we had three key players not available but there’s only so many things you can change at once without affecting the synergy of the group that performed to a top-six level last season.

“We’re not in a massive rush, but at the same time I’ve always got my eye on one or two areas where I can think maybe we can strengthen the group.”

The pressure to recruit for one particular position could be eased by the return of Frank Fielding.

Fielding is currently back in training.

“He’s had a wretched time,” Rowett said. “You don’t want to see any professional constantly being stopped from being able to do their job.

“He’s a good guy and he’s working really hard at the moment. We just need to get him through a period of staying fit. If we can do that then he’ll be like another signing pushing Bart and giving us that initial back-up.

“It’ll be game on then for those two.

They’re both senior goalkeepers, they’re both good goalkeepers, they’ve played a lot at Championship level between them.

“I’m hoping for a bit of luck for Frankie, I think he deserves it.”

No pressure on Troy return

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT has explained why he is not keen to put a definitive date on Troy Parrott’s return from injury.

Rowett says on-loan Tottenham striker Parrott, 18, has a “chance” of being involved against Rotherham at the New York Stadium this Saturday.

Parrott hasn’t fully trained since injuring his quad after scoring in a friendly at Southend on August 29.

The Ireland international is working on his recovery at Calmont Road, building up his fitness with Millwall’s sports science team.

The trip to face the Millers might come too soon for him, making Brentford at The Den the following Saturday likelier for a competitive Lions debut.

“There’s always a chance,” Rowett said. “If you look at [a return] four weeks from when he did it that probably rules him out of the weekend, but maybe gives him a chance for the weekend after.

“I’m sort of reticent to give dates and times because if they don’t make it back then people will start saying they’ve not done it properly, when it’s not a case of that.

“He hasn’t joined in full training yet but he is training with the physios and looking sharp. He’s absolutely desperate to play. But we’re only going to do that when it’s safe for him to do so.
