Make votes matter protest draws cross party support

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Voting reform campaigners staged a socially distanced demonstration at the weekend calling for the first past the post system to be overhauled.

Cross-party supporters of the Make Votes Matter campaign were out in force on Saturday, August 22, calling for proportional representation to be implemented in the UK. Emma Knaggs, Grassroots Leader at Make Votes Matter, said: “Our first past the post voting system means parliament does not reflect how the UK voted.

“The government has a landslide majority of seats, but this is despite the Conservatives receiving less than 44 per cent of the votes.

“We need to change to a system of proportional representation so votes count equally, and so governments represent the diversity of people and views in our communities and society.

“It’s absolutely critical to people’s participation and faith in democracy.”

The Liberal Democrats have long campaigned for electoral reform even holding an unsuccessful ‘alternative vote’ referendum in 2011. The Green Party

also supports changing the system.

Southwark MPs Neil Coyle and Helen Hayes are supporters of reform, but the third local MP, Harriet Harman, has not - so far - joined their ranks and publicly backed the Make Votes Matter Campaign.

One attendee, James, said: "Most people understand that first past the post is broken, it leaves tens of thousands of Southwark voters ignored at every election.

“Two of our three MPs in Southwark understand this and support PR, so our hope is that we and other PR supporters in Southwark can convince Harriet Harman to join us and her colleagues in calling for a fair voting system.”

Although first past the post elects the House of Commons, various forms of proportional representation have already been used in the UK including mayoral and European polls.

Lib Dem councillor Humaira Ali tweeted: “Millions of votes don't count at election time, the system is biased against smaller parties and people vote tactically not for who they actually want.

Hughes: ‘Go back to school’

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A former MP has called for parents to send their kids back to school in Southwark in September.

Sir Simon Hughes, the chair of the board of governors at Bacon’s College in Rotherhithe, said evidence suggested that schools and colleges were safe places to be, and that the damage would be greater were children to remain off school.

Sir Simon, who is also chancellor of London South Bank University, said too many young people had already suffered a “huge loss of education for far too long.”

“Due to the terrible Covid 19 pandemic far too many young people have this year suffered a huge loss of education for far too long,” he said.

“For all their sakes and all their futures young people now need to back in school and college, and we know that they will do better this year and in the future the sooner they can be with their peer group, teachers and tutors.

“The last thing that young people now need is any more party politics or unclear messages. The scientific advice is clear that schools and colleges will be safe places to be and the best places to be.

“Now is the time for young people to have the best chance of the best education for the best future for all of them in all the years ahead.”

The former Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP said families with children at Bacon’s College, a secondary school, would be receiving a message in the coming days to make it clear students were expected back in classes for the new term.

He added that students within the London South Bank network of organisations were also expected to return to studies in September.

The call comes as senior politicians urge parents to send their children back to school for the new academic year.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has this week said: “It’s vitally important that we get our children back into the classroom to learn and to be with their friends.

“Nothing will have a greater effect on the life chances of our children than returning to school.”

Labour’s Sir Keir Starmer, who has also called for schools to return, has warned that the re-opening of schools could be at risk because of mishandling. He has alleged the government to have been distracted from making classrooms safe by its handling of this year’s A-level results.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

Newborn kitten rescued in Nunhead

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A newborn kitten found alone in a garden in a Nunhead with her umbilical cord still attached has been rescued by the RSPCA.

The animal was found in an Evelina Road garden on Monday, August 17, at no more than a day or two old.

After realising the mum was not coming back they called the RSPCA for help.

Inspector Harriet Daliday rescued the tiny kitten and took her to an animal hospital in north London, where she will be hand reared until she is old enough to be rehomed.

She has now been named Eve, after the road where she was found.

Harriet said: When I arrived she was pretty cold

and I was really worried about her core temperature dropping significantly.

"Young kittens usually rely on the warmth of their mum but this little kitten only had me, so I popped her inside my shirt and buttoned it back up again so she could warm up in there. It’s quite a long journey to the hospital and I didn’t want to lose her on the journey.

"When we arrived at RSPCA Harmsworth Animal Hospital she was put straight on a wrapped-up hot water bottle to warm up."

May to September is a busy time for the RSPCA as it is the season when most litters are born, with an influx of cats coming into rescue centres.

"We have no idea who or where her mum is or if her mum was owned, but it's more likely that her mum was a stray cat who lost one of her kittens whilst moving them and poor Eve was left behind," Harriet added.

thousands support saving Skatepark in abandoned pub

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Nearly 3,000 people have signed a petition to keep a DIY skatepark in the car park of an abandoned pub in East Dulwich.

The Grove Pub has been empty and boarded up for eight years. In the last few months a group of keen skateboarders have taken the overgrown and unused car park and created a homemade skatepark and community project – only to be ordered to leave by its land owners, the Dulwich Estate.

Kyle Creaton, who set up the Change.org petition online, explained: “It’s been out of use for years and as soon as people have shown a genuine interest with the spot, we are being told it’s due to be knocked down, you can’t have it anymore. Demolished.

“If it was up to me I’d say stop acting like a child who wants to now play with a toy that someone else picked up while it was left on the floor in your possession.

“It doesn’t seem fair to pick and choose when you want to care and not.

“It’s a place for everyone of any age to come and have a laugh, learn something useful like how to mix cement and build structures and design something that came from their mind, have a skate, make friends, learn social skills and even talk about your feelings if you’ve had a bad day and don’t know how to talk about it.

“Especially the younger generation. There’s an abundance of wild blackberry trees which have been used to fuel some young minds to even make their own homemade jam. The possibilities are endless.”

The group say they have actively tried to tidy the area, keep it safe, and also prevent the derelict building from being broken into.

The Grove Tavern, previously a Harvester, has been empty since a fire outbreak in 2012.

Numerous meetings have since been held by concerned residents over the deteriorating building which still has a lease, by pub chain Stonegate, until 2025. Southwark Council has also earmarked the site for future homebuilding – but development plans have failed to make headway.

The community has rushed to the group’s defence with many messages of support online including via the East Dulwich Forum.

“These lads cleaned up a derelict wasteland and turned it into something positive,” wrote one backer. “There’s some real community spirit at the Grove DIY. It’s a good thing. It will be a shame to have it destroyed only to turn back into a wasteland.”

Another said: “I live right next door to the pub these lads are doing nothing wrong.

“They are a very polite and helpful group. They are trying to build a community where kids can go.

“If the land owners are so worried why don’t they do something? It’s an eye sore living next to it...

“These lads keep it clean and tidy and are no bother. Allow them to keep doing what they’re doing.”

Man attacked by GROUP in walworth

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A 24-year-old man was fighting for his life after being stabbed in Walworth last Friday by ‘six men armed with knives and baseball bats’.

Officers were called to East Street at 5.22pm on August 21 after the severely injured victim was found by paramedics.

It is believed he was attacked in Nursery Row Park.

Police have now confirmed that his condition is no longer believed to be life

threatening.

A section 60 was in place after the attack covering a large area of SE17 on Friday night into Saturday morning with the Met also upping patrols in the vicinity.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses to come forward as they begin lengthy CCTV trawls and door-todoor enquiries. So far, no one has been arrested.

DS Rob Merrett, from Central South CID, said: "I believe the victim was attacked by a group of up to six males armed with baseball bats and knives.

Fifty people evacuated from SE16 tower block

"An investigation is underway, including forensic analysis of the scene and of all available CCTV footage, in addition to house-to-house and other local enquiries.

“I urge any witnesses, anyone with information and in particular people who have mobile phone footage of the incident to come forward and speak with police if they have not already done so.”

Appeal after ‘threat of rape’

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Police have launched an appeal after a woman was ‘racially abused and threatened with rape’ on a train to New Cross.

Police say the victim was in Cannon Street station at around 8.45pm on July 13 when a group of men are alleged to have cat-called her and made uncomfortable comments.

She boarded a train to New Cross, which goes through London Bridge, and the men sat in the same carriage.

They subjected her to racist abuse and threats of rape, say police.

Cops believe the men pictured in these CCTV pictures have information which could help the investigation.

Anyone who recognises the men, or has information, should contact the British Transport Police by texting 61016 quoting reference 579 of 13/07/2020.

The emergency services were called to the fire at John Kennedy House on Rotherhithe Old Road shortly before 8pm on Saturday.

Around fifty people evacuated from the sixteen-storey building, but nobody was reported injured.

A balcony of a first floor flat was damaged by the fire, and part of the flat itself has also been damaged.

Firefighters say they managed to get the fire under control by 8.45am.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Deptford, Old Kent Road, Dockhead and Peckham fire stations were at the scene.

Tower Bridge in a mechanical pickle

The bridge had become locked in an uneven position after letting a ship through earlier in the day.

Traffic came to a standstill as engineers battled to fix the problem, with huge tailbacks reported across central London.

While the bridge reopened to pedestrians within an hour it remained closed to traffic until 5.30pm on Sunday.

Claims of a scam at surrey quays cash machine

Tesco urges customers who may have lost money to contact banks for a ‘full refund’

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Tesco has urged customers who may have lost money at their ATM in Surrey Quays to contact their bank, after allegations the machine has taken customers’ cash.

It comes after a News reader contacted the paper alleging that their relatives had been ‘scammed’ by the machine “People are being regularly scammed including my mum and step-dad,” said reader Mike McEvoy.

The card allegedly jammed, while money was taken out of the account, he said.

Similar reports have been made on local residents’ forums on social media.

One alleged victim said: “My husband just tried to use [the] cash point at

Tesco, he put [the] card in and pin then the machine went blank.

“By the time I got through to the bank someone had already taken £250.00 out of his account.”

In response to queries by the News, Tesco said the cash point was investigated on a 24/7 basis so that any issues could be remedied.

The supermarket giant also added that cash being taken from an ATM was a “rare occurrence.”

“We monitor the health of our ATM estate on a 24-7 basis and investigate and remedy all issues raised with us,” said a Tesco spokesperson.

“We are sorry if any customers have not received the cash they requested.

“This is a rare occurrence and we ask that any impacted customers contact their card issuing bank to receive a full refund.”

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Camberwell church whose pastor was revealed by the News to be selling coronavirus ‘cures’ made of just oil and string is now being investigated over its accounts.

Bishop Climate Wiseman, of Camberwell’s Kingdom Church, had claimed the £91 kits would cure and protect those who bought them from coronavirus.

The church and a linked ministry, called Bishop Climate Ministries, found itself accused of “exploiting fears” over the product, sold at the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

Now the Charity Commission has

opened a statutory inquiry into the church over concerns with its finances.

The regulator says its investigation into the coronavirus ‘cure’ threw up concerns about the charity’s finances, and the accuracy of information provided to the authorities about income and expenditure at the church.

“Charities should be organisations that people can trust. Many will have been concerned by allegations about this charity’s activities in relation to Covid-19, and so it is right that we, and others, have intervened,” said Helen Earner, the Commission’s Director of Regulatory Services.

“Our own examination into The Kingdom Church GB has identified further concerns that require investigation which is why we have now opened an official inquiry.”

The formal probe, launched on August 7, will investigate trustees’ compliance with charity law, and the extent to which trustees “responsibly managed the charity’s resources and financial affairs.”

It will also examine the charity’s

relationship with Bishop Climate Ministries, a company fronted by Climate Wiseman, who is also a trustee of the Kingdom Church charity.

The charity watchdog said it had already intervened to make sure the coronavirus products were no longer being sold on the church’s site, and that it would continue to liaise with Southwark Trading Standards who were also investigating the products.

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Tributes have been paid to a “kind-hearted and loving” former Southwark mayoress who sadly died of cancer aged just 40.

Cleo Arens held the mayoress post at Southwark Council between 2006/7, and is remembered by her colleagues for bringing “a sense of youth and

glamour” to the role.

Ms Arens was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, a type of blood cancer, five years ago, and had been receiving treatment near her home in Northampton. She sadly passed away last week.

Paul Kyriacou, who was the mayor alonside Cleo, paid tribute to Ms Arens as a bubbly personality who would always do things for other people out

of the goodness of her heart.

“Everyone knew her, she was such a big personality and so popular,” said the former Southwark mayor.

“She would always do things just out of the kindness of her heart.

“Cleo worked hard with me to fundraise and promote volunteer causes. She had lots of fun and enjoyed being mayoress, getting stuck into the role.

“Cleo was kind, fun loving and had a bubbly personality and touched the lives of many.

“Sadly over the last five years, she had been battling Acute Myeloid Leukaemia but fought bravely to the end, sadly passing away at the age of just 40.”

In the role, she was instrumental in helping to set up the Southwark Stars awards, which recognise the borough’s most inspirational community groups and volunteers.

Following her stint in the ceremonial position, Cleo lived and worked abroad in Beijing and Australia, and had worked as a PA. Outside of work, she loved to read and socialise with friends, said Mr Kyriacou. “Cleo moved up to Northampton in recent years and will be sorely missed by many,” he said.

Residents rely on weather to stop Burgess Park raves

Covid-19 is a new coronavirus in the same family first discovered by June, who helped pioneer virus imaging.

The lab has been set up to help increase testing for patients, staff, and the general population.

Scientists in the lab will research developing technologies to beat coronavirus, and antibody responses to the condition.

It currently has a capacity of 400 tests a day, but hospital bosses say they hope to increase that number even higher.

The hospital’s Professor Jonathan Edgeworth said: “June Almeida was a pioneering scientist whose work has greatly increased our understanding of the virus so it is very fitting that our new facility is named in her honour.

As the News has reported, since lockdown Southwark’s green spaces have seen unprecedented numbers through their gates with parties, large gatherings, and illegal BBQs all taking place throughout the day and night.

Loud noise, anti-social behaviour, and littering are all taking their toll.

Southwark Police have confirmed they are ploughing more resources into the issue – with the Met responding to up to 20 raves per day across the capital.

The council and police have also been actively contacting the organisers of events promoted on Facebook in an effort to discourage them from going ahead.

Despite this a 100-strong church congregation gathered last Friday evening, playing music.

When approached by residents asking for the music to be turned off, the group refused to leave and police were called. A large party was also underway near the rugby pitch.

Noise reportedly continued until at least 1am, despite police seen arriving in Trafalgar Avenue at 10am.

Meanwhile, Aylesbury Estate residents reported noise until nearly 3am from the park, including music from speakers and singing over microphones.

The Friends of Burgess Park have now written an open letter to the council asking for more information about its enforcement strategy.

Residents say council responses outlining more patrols, extra bins, and coordinated work with the police, the

action is simply not enough to deal with the scale of the problem.

“Park users and local residents need more information about what the council and police are doing,” Susan Crisp, from Friends of Burgess Park, said.

“We appreciate the efforts the police are making to manage and where necessary disperse large crowds, and also the hard work of the park staff and gardeners who clear up every morning, but we need more to be done.

“Burgess Park is a magnet for late night activity because it cannot be locked. We do not want to stop people using the park but it is not a club or festival venue.”

Police have a dedicated team responding to a huge number of calls about raves and large parties in public spaces, and the police helicopter flying overhead has become another familiar sound in Walworth.

It is also hoped new police powers to fine rave organisers up to £10,000 will help prevent the largest disturbances.

So far, the only thing that appears guaranteed to work is bad weather.

Similar issues in Dulwich’s Dawson’s Hill appear to be improving, say police.

Southwark neighbourhood inspector, Tom Cornish, says Dawson’s Hill had been quieter in the last few weeks after multiple dispersal orders and regular patrols – including at night.

“There has been a reduced number of reports being received by police about anti-social behaviour on Dawson’s Hill, however, officers will still patrol the area and deal with any antisocial behaviour appropriately,” he said.

Rotherhithe Tunnel and other bridges could face closures as money runs out

TfL listed the tunnel as only behind Vauxhall Bridge in need of repair

The authority was forced to ask for a government bailout in May, following a collapse in passenger numbers from coronavirus.

A revised budget in July, which also ruled out funding for a Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf ferry, allocated £12m for major highway infrastructure.

This pot of money is for “design work for major renewals” on several of the capital’s major crossing points - but not the major renewal itself.

Two years ago, a TfL committee listed the Rotherhithe Tunnel as only behind

Vauxhall Bridge as most needing significant renewal work.

The cost is expected to be as high as £120m, a report stated. “The deferral of these projects increases the risk of asset restrictions, and potentially closures, in the next five years in order to maintain a safe network,” it warned.

“For example, further deterioration of bridge components may require load restrictions to be imposed, or increasing faults on ageing tunnel equipment may necessitate short term closures for repairs or restrictions to reduce traffic volumes.”

Several of these restrictions have already come into force on the tunnel, including a ban on lorries using the crossing.

However, the report warned that without funding for renewal, restrictions may need to be extended “to buses and other motorised vehicles if the condition reduces further.”

As yet, no date has been set publicly for major renewals on the tunnel. TfL has been contacted for comment.

“Closing a few junctions does not amount to banning cars. Eighty per cent or more of all public space is still given over to motor vehicles.

“We're just looking for a modest rebalancing in favour of people.”

They later added: “The majority of people in Southwark don't have access to a car.

“Most streets have two lanes for parked cars or long term vehicle storage and two more for moving traffic.

“This doesn't leave much room for people.

The amount of resource given over to car drivers is completely disproportionate.

“The reaction of people to a few pretty timid attempts to reallocate a little space to make it easier for people to get about, is pretty incredible in my opinion.”

Meanwhile one new cyclist – posting under the name Otto2 - described a newfound confidence in quiet streets.

“Cyclists and walkers should have equal enjoyment of roads and it makes sense to add some routes where the air is better to breathe and the traffic less frenzied.

“There is room for everyone -adding some quiet streets is also great for the kids.

“I saw a large amount of families en route today, enjoying the easier to cycle roads.

“My road now has increased traffic (huge actually) due to the change, but, I think that will change over time when people get used to the changes and reroute.”

Writing under the name ‘East Dulwich Henry’, one car-owning resident said the initiative was ‘long overdue’ and changed their own approach to travel.

“I've just taken my first walk up Melbourne Grove since the restrictions came in, and it's made such a difference.

“Hardly any traffic, peace and quiet, this is long overdue.

“I just hope the council has the guts to face down the petrol heads and apply more of these pinch points.”

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Emergency road closures in Dulwich have proved as contentious as Walworth Road’s divisive ‘low emission neighbourhood’.

In the last month the News has reported on sweeping traffic changes in place across the borough as part of the council’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Newly pedestrianised streets and closed off junctions have been put in place to make social distancing easier, reduce air pollution, and help more people commute safely back to work without relying on public transport.

But their implementation has not been plain sailing; with a huge opposition gathering against how the scheme has been implemented in Walworth.

Meanwhile, walkers, cyclists and the non-car owning majority are praising the initiative as a bold sign of the future.

Over in Dulwich, the scheme is igniting similar tensions. One post on neighbourhood app NextDoor inquiring what people think of the area’s low traffic neighbourhood, and specifically the Calton Avenue and Court Lane closure, has racked up 227 comments and counting since August 16.

Gill Judson, a volunteer for the Community Fridge in East Dulwich, said the changes had slowed down her deliveries, saying that the road blocks appeared to worsen traffic on thoroughfares with schools and hospitals.

Replying online, a community midwife described how the closures mean she spends more time travelling and less time with mums-to-be.

“We do not have a blue light to move through the traffic,” she wrote. “The emergency services will struggle with this too.

“All it needs is an accident on the South Circular and the whole place will be gridlocked. Keep everything crossed that’s not the day you need an ambulance in a hurry.”

A key feature of the schemes is the divide between ‘winners’ and ‘losers’ depending on whether their street has become virtually car free or fully congested as a result of the road blocks.

One poster, Marcela Holtheuer, described her home in Court Lane as having been turned into a ‘rat run’ during her 20 years in the area, with residents often unable to get out their own driveways due to queues for the South Circular.

“In terms of pollution, it has also been horrible, we could not open the front windows and you can imagine how much this affected the children especially during the winter with coughs and colds and especially for people with respiratory conditions and asthma,” she said, arguing that the change was needed.

In April a new group called ‘One Dulwich’ organised in response to the Dulwich Village LEN. It says it shares Southwark Council’s objectives to reduce traffic, improve air quality and promote safe walking and cycling but does not support the closures now in place.

The group is advocating ‘timed restrictions at peak hours’ as a compromise – saying the current system makes life harder for those who have to drive, and divides the community into those with no traffic and those with even more congestion.

One of their key arguments – similar to concerns raised in Walworth – is that the scheme may make the most polluted roads worse; addresses like East Dulwich Grove, Lordship Lane and Grove Vale, which

already breach WHO limits.

Despite motorists’ vocal opposition, only 40 per cent of households in Southwark are car owners.

One supporter of the initiative, writing under the name rahrahrah, said the idea the scheme was ruining life for the majority simply didn’t stack up: “Most people don't need to drive to schools.

“Unless we want to see higher levels of breathing problems, road deaths and

The scheme is being led by Lambeth Council and TfL, as The Cut marks the boundary between the two boroughs.

It is part of an overarching plan to create “low-traffic corridors” in central London, spearheaded by TfL. “In order to ensure that the recovery from COVID-19 is achieved without excessive use of motor vehicles TfL have created a central London Plan to create low traffic corridors,” states the report.

“TfL and Lambeth have identified the need for significant improvements to active travel along The Cut.” Officials say they will assess the impact of the 24-hour closure of the road section, and if needed, will move instead to a timed closure.

Amid the global pandemic and rising loneliness and isolation, one Peckham-based social wellbeing enterprise is working to bring people together with a community approach to physical and mental health, writes Simon Throssell...

Community Bridges was established in June 2018 by health policy and research consultant Sandra Evans.

When she moved to the area four years ago, she knew it was the perfect place to put her idea into motion.

“Even if you don’t know Peckham, when you come here there’s a special kind of community spirit,” she said.

“During my time as part of an early psychosis team in the NHS, I was responsible for linking up patients who were coming out of hospital with community activities to try and help their reintegration back into the community.

“I really discovered that whilst there was so much going on in the community, a lot of the care coordinators didn’t really have the time or resources to find out what all of those activities were, even though they might have really benefited their young clients.”

Community Bridges does just that – bringing together what is going on in Southwark and south London together in one free resource – with a focus on tackling loneliness and isolation.

People who are lonely are more likely to engage in unhealthy behaviours from smoking to lack of exercise and overeating, of which can have a compounding impact on their existing physical and mental health conditions, making them harder to treat.

Community Bridges launched in

Peckham Levels in 2019 and soon after was producing two community magazines focusing on how people’s lives had been transformed by joining a new group or taking up a social activity.

The magazines also include a pullout calendar of events including poetry groups, mum and baby classes, and Universal Credit advice sessions.

But then the pandemic halted their plans. Responding to COVID, its volunteers set up a food service and a free phone line, as well as moving their magazine and other resources online and creating a podcast.

In a recent survey, 38 per cent of people who engaged with the organisation experience a long term health condition and that 27 per cent of people said that Community Bridges had improved their wellbeing.

“We were really happy with the results because it came just after a year of us working on this,” Sandra said.

“It was initial proof of concept that what we are doing is helping people.”

She added: “We want people to have easy access to the free activities going on locally so that they can try out different things that resonate with them a little bit better than a ten minute GP appointment.

“The NHS route might be a really helpful and beneficial experience for some people but there is a lot of aspect of loneliness and mental health that needs to be dealt with within the community.”

Volunteers from Burgess Parkrun and Southwark’s GoodGym have been helping to clear up litter and waste from BBQs, picnics and parties in Burgess Park.

As the News has reported, an increase in littering is spoiling green spaces across the borough and giving rise to even more plastic pollution.

Nosy Crow Books is working with Rye Hill TRA to distribute books to families with babies, toddlers and kids up to twelve years of age.

The TRA is helping with homeschooling by providing free supplies including pens, worksheets and paper, and offering printing services to residents.

Volunteers are doing their best to give a helping hand to the park wardens and street cleaning teams to tackle the problem.

Tesco hands out cash

Restorative Justice for All, a charity helping young people in Southwark, says demand for its support services increased by 400% during the pandemic.

The charity is one of many in the borough given an emergency grant of £500 by Tesco and to receive donated food for its work supporting those struggling with food insecurity. has been supporting marginalised youth throughout the coronavirus pandemic with nutritious meals and mental health guidance.

Throughout lockdown the charity, known as RJ4All, provided 2,383 meals to Southwark residents, donated PPE equipment to more than 20 key workers based in the borough, set up a web page with resources to help young people who are faced with mental health challenges due to COVID-19's impact, and manned a free mental health helpline open from 10am-10pm Monday-Sunday.

Dr. Theo Gavrielides, the charity's founder and director, said: “The support we have received from our local Tesco has been incredible.

“The Bags of Help funding as well

as the food donations we received through their partnership with FareShare made our youth-led ‘You are not Alone’ COVID-19 relief project a reality.

“As a local resident, I know the difference that this kind of gesture means to those who are most in need in SE16.”

Keith Jackson, from Tesco, said: "Due to the sustained need for the emergency support we're seeing from local community groups, we took the decision to extend the scheme's deadline beyond the original twelveweek mark.

"We're already working with all kinds of groups up the length and breadth of the country, all of whom are in urgent need of a cash boost in order to go on providing local people with vital services, but we've widened this even further.

"Whether you are from a homeless charity, a food bank, or a support network for vulnerable individuals, you could qualify for some immediate financial support.”

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Provisional GCSE results show a ‘positive and reassuring’ trend in Southwark as three-quarters pass English and Maths.

The council now has results data for the majority of schools in Southwark but, controversially, some head teachers have decided not publish their individual school’s attainment data - leaving parents in the dark about performance.

Further borough-wide figures are expected throughout the coming days but,

so far, they show all schools have posted improvements compared with 2019 in four key measures - putting them in the best position in the last three years.

In the period 2018 to 2020 the English Baccalaureate at grade 4+ and grade 5+ has had a three-year upward trend across the borough.

For all the other measures Southwark has achieved its highest and best position when measured against outcomes in 2018 and 2019.

The results ended “weeks of uncertainty” for students on how they would be graded, said the school.

Its principal, Marcus Huntley, said the move to centre-assessed grades this year meant students had received the results they had deserved.

“They have responded to the lockdown with great resilience and many took the opportunity to participate in the A Level bridging units taught virtually by our staff during lockdown,” he said.

“They’ve got the grades, a taste of 6th form, and most importantly, the resilience to face any challenge that

lies ahead. I am proud of them all.”

Top students Brooklyn Barton, Conrad Pearce, Stella San, Christopher Denning, and Zeyad Gendia achieved a number of top grade 9s, said the school.

Brooklyn will now go on to study A-levels at Kingsdale, where she has been awarded an arts scholarship, while pupil Zeyad’s top results means he will be going to study sciences at Saint Francis Xavier sixth-form.

Speaking last week, Martin Deutz, chair of governors, added: “I arrived at school this morning to heart-warming scenes of excitement, joy and pride.

“It was wonderful to see our community of students, families and staff back together, celebrating and looking forward.

Provisional figures show 46.9 per cent of pupils achieved the English Baccalaureate; an increase of 9.3 percentage points on the previous year.

From the thirteen schools that have returned their provisional results, all but one additionally provided a figure for the percentage of pupils achieving a ‘strong pass’; grades 9 to 5.

Based on those twelve schools, 33.7 per cent of pupils achieved a strong pass in the English Baccalaureate. This represents a 9.4 percentage point increase on the previous year’s performance.

Overall, 75.7 per cent of pupils achieved grade 9 to 4 in English and maths – a 9.5 percentage point improvement on the previous year And with regards to a ‘strong pass’ in English and maths, 53.3 per cent of pupils in all thirteen schools achieved grade 9 to 5 English and maths. This figure represents a 7.9 percentage point increase.

Meet the top student in school’s history

In a statement sent to the News, the school described this year’s results as ‘outstanding’.

An early indication of what they were capable of came last summer when the year group took its Religious Studies GCSE early and achieved a 93 per cent pass rate - with almost half of students

achieving top 9 – 7 grades.

The school, on Llewelyn Street, said the system accurately reflects their students’ hard work over the past two years, despite the challenge of coronavirus in recent months.

In a statement, the school’s principal, Felicity Corcoran, said: “The college is delighted that the decision was taken to use Centre Assessed Grades and has

full confidence in the robustness of the system it used to generate these grades which took into account the ability profile of the students, their track record in formal internal assessments and the progression rates of the college as whole determined through reliable external measures.”

Among the star pupils highlighted by the school are Lauren Stewart, (pictured) who achieved a stunning ten Grade 9s – the top result it is possible to achieve.

The school has also praised the following students, as all of them achieved top results between Grades 7 to 9 in all of their GCSEs: Alessandro Corpuz-Irana, Charles Oparinde, Matthew Smith, Nina Hallewell, Golddust Addo Mensah, Fernando Carrion Morales, Mukisa Magambe, Natalia Augustinowicz, Elmina Kwao, Katie Wilson, Kassandra Salvador De Winton Parker Ms Corcoran added: “The college is proud of all of our students who have had to overcome so many challenges beyond their control in recent months.

“We would like to take the opportunity to wish them all well as they move onto the next stage of their education, whether in our Sixth Form or elsewhere.”

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Three-quarters of pupils at Rotherhithe’s Bacon’s College have achieved at least a Grade 4 in English and Maths, as the school hails a “strong set” of results.

The school on Timber Pond Road said the results achieved this year will enable “the vast majority” of pupils to take their next step in education, employment or training.

Almost three-quarters of all grades were at a ‘pass’, with nearly half being at a Grade 5 or above, the equivalent of a “strong pass.”

“Whilst there has been a great deal of uncertainty over the last few weeks, the students should be given huge credit for the way they have worked and persevered through a huge range of personal and practical

challenges – these results are a fair and accurate reflection of their abilities and talents,” the school said.

“They have been ably supported by dedicated and hard-working teachers and support staff who have themselves had to adapt with skill and speed to the constant changes imposed on them, with further changes occurring only within the last twenty-four hours.”

The school highlighted a number of ‘exceptional’ performances from Year 11 pupils, refering to them by revealing only the first names including: Vivian C who achieved seven Grade 9s and three Grade 8s.

Jibola A scored seven Grade 9s and two Grade 8s. Tiger C’s results saw him score six Grade 8s and four Grade 7s. Chanel F has received six Grade 9s and four Grade 8s. And Ellie H who has received two Grade 9s and six Grade 7s

However, head teacher Alex Hutchinson said students’ had been awarded the grades they deserve and the school is extremely proud of their achievements over the last two years.

She also praised staff for their work throughout a difficult few months.

In a statement published on the school’s website, she said: “I am very pleased that the commitment and hard work that so characterises this year group has been reflected in the grades that they have received today.

“They are a high-achieving, hard working group of young women who I know will continue to do great things in the Sixth Form and beyond.

“I am very grateful to the members of staff in school for their hard work as we have steered through the recent changes to government policy, and we are very much here to support those students who may have any concerns.’

“We would like to congratulate our Year Eleven pupils and are so looking forward to welcoming them into the Sixth Form in a few weeks’ time.”

Start of a new Global era for Elephant students

Ark Globe students were relieved to collect their GCSE results without the controversy and confusion of last week’s A Levels announcements.

Devina Carty, 16, from South Bermondsey, achieved seven 9s, two 8s and a 7. She will be staying at Ark Globe for the Sixth Form to study Politics, Sociology and Media A Levels. She has aspirations to become a lawyer.

“When I opened my envelope I knew it would be good, but it was better than I expected,” she said.

“It was kind of nerve wrecking waiting for today. I didn’t sit the exams and I had no idea what I would get.

“My family was screaming on the phone when they heard my results. Everyone is very happy. I feel like I had a very long summer.

“I am now really looking forward to starting my A levels.”

Ebi Miene, 16, from Southwark, gained three 9s, three 8s, three 7s, and a 6 and is staying on for A Levels in Chemistry, Biology and Maths.

The school describes Ebi as a ‘born leader’ with a ‘bright future’.

“I am quite happy with what I got.

“Even though I didn’t personally sit the exams, this is the result of years-long work.

“As we weren’t able to sit our GCSE exams, I can see how working hard through the past years helped me to get to this point.

“I think working hard all through my secondary years was the best thing I did up to this point.

“My mum knew how hard I worked and wouldn’t have expected anything less from me. She has been very happy with the progress I have been doing. She is preparing a surprise celebration in the evening.

“I want to go to university and get the highest possible degree. I am thinking about masters and PhD. I want to study medical sciences and a bit of biochemistry.

“Ark Globe is a very supportive school.

When you ask the teachers to help you, they help you in all ways imaginable. “They don’t leave any student behind.

“They see more potential in students and push them to do more than what students think that they can achieve. For that reason, I like the school and am really thankful to all of my teachers.”

Humayra Choudhury, 16, is from Elephant and Castle. She gained two 9s, five 8s, three 7s and in September will start English Literature, Politics, Economics and Geography.

She said: “I am feeling quite happy with my results. I have been really relieved since I opened my envelope.

“I came to collect my results with my dad, he is very proud. I also shared the news in my family group chat, they are all very happy, quite supportive. We will get together as the whole family on Saturday to celebrate.

“I have always been working very hard and taking mocks really seriously. I wasn’t too worried about the results.

“The teachers that I have been working with since Year Seven knew me and how I could progress.

“Overall, everyone’s been quite supportive.

During the lockdown, they continued to be in touch, they called home to check in and published virtual assemblies.

“There was less stress on us, as these all felt like we weren’t too distant from school.

Just being able to keep the relationships there was very helpful.

“The A levels I chose are all essay based.

Daisy Kennedy, 16, from Peckham, has received two 9s, an 8, four 7s and three 6s.

Her A Levels will be in History, Psychology, Media when she goes back to school in September.

The former prefect said: “I am feeling great. I want to end up going to university to do Psychology and become a licensed therapist.

“I feel like I already have been training by supporting my friends.

“Secondary school is over. It is a bit shocking. I expected a big climactic moment, but I looked at my results and smiled. That was it. I feel relieved now.”

Sixteen-year-old Syeda Alam, from Elephant and Castle, got five 8s and five 7s and intends to study Maths, Physics, Economics and Geography at A Level.

Another former prefect, Syeda wants to become an architect.

She said: “I am feeling very happy with my results. I spoke to my family and mum and uncle instantly started crying on the phone.

“We will be going out as friends to celebrate this evening.

“Having understood that we had no control over the process, I kept in mind that grades don’t define us.

“Even if I didn’t do well, I kept in mind that it will all be well at the end.”

Joshua Sibahi, 16, from Peckham was awarded two 8s, five 7s and three 6s. He intends to study Chemistry, Biology and Maths at A Level.

Students received their results via email, and were not on site last Thursday.

In a statement sent to the News, interim headmaster Andy Skinnard said: “We are so pleased for all of our Year 11 cohort, who, like their Year Thirteen counterparts, have experienced an extremely anxious few months as they adapted first to life in lockdown, and then to the various government announcements around public examinations and the consequent results process.

“We hope that today provides welcome reassurance to them and marks the happy beginning of an exciting next stage to their career at Alleyn’s.

“Their excellent results are, of course, a fitting outcome of their commitment and enthusiasm for learning throughout their entire time at Alleyn’s.

“We are incredibly impressed by the resilience they have shown in recent months, and for all the energy they have brought to school life throughout lockdown and indeed before.

Francis Miene, 16, achieved seven 7s and three 5s and now plans to study Maths, Physics and Economics in the Sixth Form.

He said: “The teachers and staff have been very supportive. I like the enthusiasm from all the teachers and staff; they encourage you a lot.

“They push you to be the best you can be in everything that you do, and they always have support for you. I am looking forward to starting Ark Globe Sixth Form.”

Exceeding national averages

Catherine May described seeing the students in school to collect their results as an ‘absolute joy’.

“I am so proud of the academic successes of these young women, but equally proud of the patience and resilience they have shown throughout this extraordinary year,” she told the News.

“I am very much looking forward to seeing many of them return in September to our Sixth Form. I am confident that the skills they have

learnt throughout this whole period will make them stronger and inspire them to make the most of every opportunity available to them.

“I would like to thank my staff for their forbearance and perseverance with the many changes to the policies that have taken place around these results. I would also like to congratulate all our students on their incredible achievements and I wish them all the very best for their futures.”

Deputy head teacher Michelle Ferguson who led the assessment process said staff acted with ‘absolute integrity’ throughout.

“We have many excellent individual and collective achievements to celebrate as a result of the incredible dedication and hard work of students and staff over the previous two to

three years,” Steve Morrison said.

“More than ten students achieved at least nine grade 9s and over 100 students achieved four or more grades 8 and 9.

“Our examination outcomes indicate that almost 90 per cent of students achieved a good or better pass in both English and Mathematics and nearly 50 per cent of the cohort achieved a strong pass in the English Baccalaureate.”

All of them are now going onto sixthforms either at Harris or in the local area.

Among the star pupils highlighted last week were Thien Nguyen, who achieved Grade 9s in Biology, Chemistry, English Language, English Literature, History, Mathematics, Physics, and Religious Studies.

“I’m feeling so overwhelmed at the moment. I’m so happy and I’m really grateful to my teachers. I couldn’t have done it without them,” she said.

The teenager now hopes to study Maths, Further Maths, Philosophy and Chemistry at A-Level.

Xue-Jun Wang achieved straight Grade 9s in every GCSE subject, and will now go on to study at Harris’ Westminster sixth-form.

“I’m relieved and grateful that the grades on my page reflect five years of mine and my teachers’ hard work,” she said.

Fellow star pupil, Samira Awes, achieved Grade 9s in English Literature, French and Religious Studies.

“I am over the moon! I was shocked. I didn’t expect these results so I am very happy to see them,” she said last week.

Other students highlighted for their academic success include: Sara Al-Shurbaji, who achieved Grade 9s in every GCSE subject Zuthika Ullah who achieved the top Grade 9s in English Lang, English Literature, Geography, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Religious Studies and Spanish.

e have fantastic schools across Southwark and my constituency of Dulwich and West Norwood, and I am proud of the work that our hard working, committed teachers do to support students to achieve their best.

This is usually the time of year for celebrating the culmination of years of hard work in A Level and GCSE results which enable students to go on the next stage of their education, training or working life confident and well equipped to thrive.

Coronavirus has been very hard for school students who have spent months away from the classroom and away from their friends. As a mum to one teenager, and one pre-teen, I know how difficult it has been for students to stay motivated and focused and continue their learning from home. For students in years eleven and thirteen, it has been even harder – the government announced at the start of lockdown

Artistic protest at the Tate

The Tate’s decision to make more than 300 staff redundant from its commercial arm has sparked a novel form of protest, including at the Tate Modern in Bankside.

Workers have hit out at plans to lose 313 staff from the Tate’s cafes, shops and publishing, and have made their displeasure known in a suitably artistic form.

Mock artworks have begun appearing in public areas of the Bankside gallery, alerting visitors to the dispute over the job losses.

One is a bin outside the Tate, with a

Having told young people that they would not sit exams, the Tory government then drew up a formula for awarding exam grades. Along with many others, I had raised concerns on multiple occasions that this formula would result in unfair, inaccurate results being awarded to some children, and that it would risk widening the attainment gap.

Boris Johnson and Tory ministers refused to act on these concerns and as a result grades were awarded which for 40 per cent of A Level students had been adjusted downwards by the government’s formula, compared with their teachers’ assessment.

On A Level results day my inbox filled with the most heart-breaking accounts from students who had been made offers to study at university but whose adjusted grades were too low, crushing their hopes and dreams

for the future. It was particularly concerning that the downward adjustment of grades affected state school students much more than those at private schools and in particular state schools with higher numbers of Black, Asian and minority ethnic students and lower income students.

After days of chaos and anxiety for students, the government was forced into a U-turn on A Level and GCSE results, announcing that grades would be awarded as originally assessed by teachers. This is welcome, but the damage caused has not yet been repaired. The government’s chaos meant that even after receiving the correct grades, many students have still been unable to access university places as they have been allocated to other students in the meantime.

This cannot be allowed to stand.

Labour is calling for the government to provide funding support for universities to increase the places available, so that no student loses out on the place they deserve and next year’s students are not adversely impacted by the numbers from this year deferring their places.

There is even more chaos for BTEC students, many of whom did not receive their level three results which should have been out on the same day as A Level results. The day before BTEC level one and two results were due the exam board announced that they would not be published but must be reviewed.

Thousands of students have had to put their future plans on hold as a result, unable to confirm university, college or apprenticeship places for September.

This year’s students have already had to endure so much. I’m proud of all our young people and I’ll keep fighting for a bright future for every student in my constituency.

It’s probably fair to say workers are p**sed off.

Like Bermondsey station, it will only be open from 7am to 7pm for the time being.

Unlike Bermondsey, because it has been shut since March 19, there is the air of disaster movie about it.

Copies of newspapers from March 19, the day the station closed, are still in abundance, while coronavirus posters from March are also present.

Schools are rightly proud of their GCSE results, so why not publish them in full and shout about it?

I

n a week of encouraging GCSE results from our local schools, some schools have chosen not to publish their results in full, out of ‘respect’ for the unprecedented challenges faced by students and teachers alike. We believe this is a mistake.

Given the U-turn over teacher assessments and the downgrading debacle, there are already concerns that this year’s cohort were being ‘written off ’. Not releasing results exacerbates this - and deprives parents of vital information about those schools.

Ultimately, some people are always going to question the validity of results when exams have not been sat, but the government’s chaotic approach has only worsened this problem. There is a lack of trust and belief in the system – Ofqual’s chief has resigned while education secretary Gavin Williamson stays in post. Amid this shambles, the lack of detail around attainment from individual schools leaves parents and prospective students in the dark.

Although this year has truly thrown up a raft of challenges that could never have been expected, part and parcel of taking exams is that it’s not just about the best you can bring on a good day, but what you bring on a bad day.

Students have taken exams and continued their schooling through gruelling personal and circumstances long before COVID-19. For some students, lockdown will not have been as difficult as other experiences in their life. Others will have had an unbelievably tough five months. How they dealt with this will, in part, be due to how the school responded to the crisis.

Southwark’s schools are understandably proud of what their students have achieved, so perhaps now is the time to publish their results in full, and really shout about it.

back Peckham Town - stop the menace

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Peckham Town FC is poised to stage a remarkable comeback as it competes for the London Senior Trophy tomorrow after months with no play, no income and repeated, heart-breaking attacks by vandals.

On Friday the Menace will take on Cray Valley Paper Mills FC in their first match since lockdown.

Since the Coronavirus pandemic, the club’s two sites have been victim to regular attacks – believed to involve the same group – running up thousands of pounds worth of damage to a club already struggling financially.

As the News has reported, the club has had its dugouts destroyed with wood used for BBQs and fires, fly-tipping, goal parts smashed and rubbish and litter strewn across its Southwark Councilowned pitches. The dug outs had been handmade and paid for by subs’ funds.

The ongoing problems have caused a huge amount of heartbreak to players, fans and volunteers and the club’s founder Bryan Hall.

During the pandemic the club was left without its income but still had hefty running costs.

But the shocking damage has also brought out the best of the community as supporters have turned out to help get the club back on track.

members of Southwark’s GoodGym helped tidy and repair the arena for the new season.

The club has also been busy recruiting new players across its teams and is now hoping as COVID restrictions ease and the pitches are in use more frequently the vandals may think twice.

Duncan Hart, from Peckham Town FC, told the News: "We have been able to return to training this month following the lifting of lockdown measures.

“Unfortunately, the vandals keep returning to our site to cause further criminal damage.

“They have taken wood from the roofs of our dugouts and lit fires on the youth pitches, and smashed bottles with the glass getting on pitches, which is obviously incredibly dangerous.

“We are indebted to volunteers at the club and from the wider community for helping us clean up the site on several occasions now.

“We are continuing to work with the police and council to try and prevent further damage."

Hart told donors on the online fundraising page that the club was moved by the support of a community that had “put their arm around us during this difficult time.”

The London Trophy final was scheduled to be held last season but postponed when lockdown came into force.

A limited number of socially-distanced seats are on sale for the game, with some available at the gate on the day.

The next season will begin at home from Saturday, September 5, against Borden Village, with season tickets

costing just £30, and the club hopes fans left without Premier League matches may be inspired to come along.

"Despite these troubles, we are excited to start the season,” Hart told the News.

“We hope that Peckham turns out in force to support our guys to bring the cup back to Southwark.”

A Southwark Police spokesperson said no one had been arrested but extra patrols were in place to help deter vandals: “We are aware of the recent incidents that have occurred at Peckham Town FC and have been engaging with the operational management team on site.

“We will be working alongside the council to support the football club and all community members that are affected by this antisocial and criminal behaviour.

“At this stage no arrests have been made but we will continue to put measures in place to ensure that any offenders are identified and further incidents are prevented in the future.

Acting police sergeant Jonathan Adams and his team will be proactively patrolling the area to prevent further offences and identify those responsible.

“We want to encourage the local community to speak with our officers to discuss any concerns that they may have.

“Anyone with information about the ongoing vandalism or antisocial behaviour at Peckham Town FC should call 101 and quote ‘VAMD20662’.”

The London Cup Final will take place at Cray Valley Paper Mills FC on Friday 28 August, with kick off at 7.45pm.

The proposed hotel, which faces onto the Maltby Street junction, would have 73 bedrooms, a ground floor restaurant, cycle storage and space for refuse collection.

In plans submitted to the council, architects Deco Design and Build Ltd say the proposals will create “job opportunities for local residents” and “create a modern, elegant building that respects and enhances the streetscape.”

“The existing cleared site detracts from the enormous potential that the site offers to this vibrant and well established part of Southwark,” states the application.

“The ambition for this site is to

produce an exceptional scheme to become a recognisable and welcome high quality addition to the varied architectural character of the area.”

However, of the 131 public comments on the proposal, 107 are in objection.

“As a neighbour I object to the planning application submitted to turn the vacant site on Tanner Street into a hotel,” states one. “The presence of a hotel is not in keeping with the area, the location of the site can not cope with the increased traffic it will bring into the area and the increased volume of visitors will have a detrimental impact to the neighborhood.”

Plans for a hotel were previously approved on the site, but the scheme did not end up being built.

The site has been empty in recent years, although it had previously housed Wyatt and Co’s tin box factory.

A decision on the hotel is due to be made before a committee of councillors on September 14.

PLANNING AND COMPULSORY PURCHASE ACT 2004 (AS AMENDED) THE TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING (LOCAL PLANNING) (ENGLAND) REGULATIONS 2012 NOTICE OF CONSULTATION FOR: NEW SOUTHWARK PLAN: PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE SUBMITTED NEW SOUTHWARK PLAN Southwark Council is consulting on amendments carried out to the submitted New Southwark Plan from 27th August 2020 to 26th October 2020.

NEW SOUTHWARK PLAN: PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE SUBMITTED NEW SOUTHWARK PLAN The New Southwark Plan is a regeneration strategy for Southwark which will provide an overarching strategy for managing growth and development across the borough. The plan sets out how we will deliver further regeneration and wider improvements to our borough in the years to come. The NSP not only sets out planning policies to guide development but it also explains how development will be delivered, and may inform future decisions about investment in infrastructure. The final NSP will replace the saved policies of the Southwark Plan 2007 and the Core Strategy 2011 and will be used to make decisions on planning applications.

The NSP was submitted to the Planning Inspectorate for Examination in January 2020. Since the last rounds of consultation, January - May 2019 for the Amended Policies and October 2017 - February 2018 for the Proposed Submission Version, we have made modifications to the plan as a result of the comments that were received from the inspectors. Because of this, we are consulting on the Council’s Proposed Changes to the Submitted New Southwark Plan.

The Inspectors will be taking into account all duly made representations on the 2017/18 Proposed Submission Version (PSV) plan. They will also take into account those representations already received on the 2019 Amended Policies Version (APV) content. All currently received representations can be found on the ‘examination documents’ webpage’ under Representations.

Accordingly, as part of the next consultation representations that have already been made on either the PSV or APV plan content should not be re-submitted as the Inspectors have already received all representations from the PSV and APV consultations. Representations should be received from: 1. Anyone who was unable to comment on the APV content and now wishes to do so; and 2. Anyone who now wishes to comment on the latest proposed changes (the January 2020 schedule of changes and its accompanying tracked change version of the plan and any other changes on or since submission) and the latest evidence base As with the previous two rounds of consultations, at this stage we are required to ask two specific questions which will give our residents and stakeholders an opportunity to comment on how the New Southwark Plan has been prepared, that its aims are achievable and that the plan is based on a robust evidence base. These questions are more commonly known as the ‘Test of Soundness.’

These questions are: 1. Is the Local Plan Legal?

2. Is the Local Plan ‘Sound’?

These are the same questions the independent Planning Inspector will be asking as part of the Examination.

There is an opportunity to work with us on a Statement of Common Ground which we will consider prior to Hearing sessions starting. The questionnaire asks you to confirm if you would like to get involved in this. If you are sending your comments outside of the consultation hub via e-mail can you should clearly state in your representation that you would like to work on a Statement of Common Ground.

Although we are consulting on the Council’s Proposed Changes to the Submitted Plan the Examination will remain open.

The Proposed Changes to the submitted New Southwark Plan will be the council’s final document for formal submission to the Secretary of State. There will then be an examination in public by the planning inspectors at a date to be determined, this will be updated on the Examination webpage.

Following the hearing, the inspectors will prepare a report for the council and may require changes to be made to the plan for legal reasons. The final New Southwark Plan will then be adopted by the council. Supporters can return to nonelite or recreational sports events after the government updated its guidelines last week. That means fans are set to be able to attend football matches from the seventh tier and below.

Fisher need the approval of the council before they can confirm supporters’ return to Rotherhithe, and working alongside Millwall Community Trust, who manage the ground, have submitted a risk assessment.

“MCT, working in partnership with the council, are being very supportive, as they have been throughout pre-season and we are hopeful we can put a plan in place that allows a limited number of spectators to attend our FA Cup match,” Fisher said in a statement.

“However, please note that this is far from certain and a possibility remains that this game will need to be played behind closed doors.

We will keep you updated via our website (fisherfc.org) and our Facebook and Twitter pages as usual.”

Fisher expect a cap of 150 supporters, limited to members and season-ticket holders. The cup fixture doesn’t apply to the latter, with fans paying on the gate.

Fisher added: “Due to the social distancing/Covid-19 restrictions that will need to be in place when spectators are allowed in, there will be other limitations on the usual match-day experience.

In particular, please note that it is highly unlikely that any refreshment or bar facilities will be available at initial fixtures.

“Any home pre-season training fixtures will remain behind closed doors.

“We will provide further updates via our website and our Facebook and Twitter pages as and when we have more information.”

Dulwich were planning on a reduced playing budget this campaign, but the financial effects of the coronavirus

pandemic – including doubts over when fans can return, a crucial revenue stream for the Hamlet – will further limit squad numbers.

“The boys ran out of contract at the end of the season,” Rose said. “The

only player that had another year was Danny Mills. But his contract from last year was a ten-month contract, so he’s effectively out of contract as well because the new one would start when the new season started. Danny was the only one we had an obligation with.

“Unfortunately we had to let a lot of the squad go. We had quite a big playing budget last year, to be honest with you. And we underachieved as a squad, forgetting the pandemic.

“We already agreed in January as a club that we would have a smaller budget, but that alone would not have had as many casualties. The pandemic came in, making our budget even smaller. The two coinciding meant we had to let go of a lot of the playing staff from last season.

“It’s not great in these times when you look at it from a human point of view, boys being told they haven’t got a job and having to find another one isn’t great.

“We’ve been waiting for the league to tell us when the season is going to start and what restrictions there will be so we’d know what budget we’d have. That was only given to us [around three weeks ago].

“So the boys have been waiting around, the coaching staff have and so have the owners of the club, waiting for the league to make a decision.”

The Hamlet are preparing for an October start, from when players’ contracts will start.

Rose added: “We’ve been given October 3, but on that date we have an FA Cup game, our first competitive game of the season.

“Contracts would start when the season starts, because no one’s sure what’s going to happen with the pandemic and if there’s going to be a second wave. Obviously we don’t want that but we have to go into this with our eyes open. So most clubs are probably covering themselves by only starting contracts when the season starts.

“We’ve retained Aaron Barnes, Quade Taylor. We’ve got one or two coming in from last season to see if we’re able to offer them a deal.

“We’ve added some new signings: Jordan Higgs who’s come in from Bromley; Michael Timlin from Ebbsfleet. And a few others as well.

We’ve also got some really good boys to come in to train and we expect to sign a few of those as well.”

The third fifteen-year-old, Robbie Keaton, was run out going for a quick single on the same score to make it 134-4 in the 30th over.

Nick Gunning joined Patel in adding 46 in eight overs for the fifth wicket before the youngster was dismissed with the score on 180. His 94, which came off 107 balls, was his third halfcentury in five innings for the first team this season, and his highest score in a league match.

Gunning fell in the next over for 21, off 26 balls. Skipper Jon Lodwick added a quick ten off eight balls to take the total to 193-7 after the allotted 40 overs. Lodwick then struck with a

wicket with the fifth ball of the innings.

Scott Kent and Richard Rawlings came together in a stand of 96 for the second wicket, but they were kept in check by tight bowling, particularly

by Lodwick, Alex Gledhill and Ben Swanson, which meant that the stand had used up 24.3 overs.

With 98 still wanted at more than six an over the batsmen needed to press on, but were constrained by the Dulwich left arm spinners. Swanson dismissed Rawlings for 33 and Waqas Sagar for a duck, and Brown had Kent caught by Patel for 61.

The Hill brothers took the score to 131-4 after 33 overs, but Swanson then

took two more wickets while bowling his eight overs straight through to finish with 4-27.

Gledhill returned to take the next three wickets, including acting skipper Rob Hill for 30, to finish with 3-24 off seven overs. The Worcester Park innings closed on 171-9 to give Dulwich victory by 22 runs. The bowlers were well supported by keeper Harms with a catch and three stumpings.

Dulwich thus recorded their third consecutive victory and climb to second place in the table. This weekend they visit old rivals Old Rutlishians, who stand in third place, just two points behind them.

The Dulwich innings was built around a mature 94 by fifteen-year-old opener Veer Patel, who took part in three

substantial partnerships. The innings got off to a disastrous start when George Taylor-Yeates, another fifteenyear-old who was making his firstteam debut, was run out going for an ambitious second run off the third ball of the innings. Frankie Brown joined Patel and together the pair added 68 in 16.2 overs for the second wicket before Brown was bowled for 25.

Michael Harms helped Patel add 65 in 12.2 overs for the third wicket before also being bowled for 24.

have been any spectators watching, but there was no shortage of tension, particularly when Foakes and Dunn were adding a calm 28 in 10 overs for the ninth wicket, as Kent fretted.

Kent’s 22 points, and second win in four matches, puts them just six points behind south group leaders Essex with just the September 6-9 round games to go.

Podmore picked up Mark Stoneman’s wicket in his own new ball burst during Surrey’s calamitous start to their chase, but Foakes and Laurie Evans then boosted Surrey’s hopes with a fifth wicket stand of 57, until the irrepressible Stevens returned to the attack to take a smart catch off his own bowling with his third ball back to send Evans packing for a fine 53-ball 42.

And Milnes made Kent heavy favourites, going into the last session, by nipping one back between lefthander Curran’s bat and front pad to bowl the England all-rounder for fourteen and, in the second over after the interval, also defeating Clarke’s attempted drive.

The evergreen Stevens has now bagged 20 wickets at 19 runs apiece in Kent’s first four Willis Trophy fixtures.

But it is his record in the past decade that is most remarkable, especially when remembering that the veteran allrounder has also hit more than 7,500 first-class runs since 2010, including sixteen centuries and 39 other scores above 50.

Here, he began by removing Scott Borthwick and Jamie Smith with his fifth and sixth deliveries to leave Surrey 6 for 2 at the end of the second over.

Borthwick chipped to short mid-wicket off a leading edge, where Daniel BellDrummond took a fine diving catch, and Smith edged a forward push to Jack Leaning at second slip.

There was no hat-trick but, with the first ball of his third over, Stevens won a leg-before decision to send back Will Jacks for six and – by then – Podmore had also had Surrey’s acting captain Mark Stoneman caught at first slip for ten.

Jordan Cox, the catcher, threw the ball high into the air and let out a roar of celebration because, from the fourth ball of Surrey’s second innings, Cox had dropped Stoneman on two off a similar ball from Podmore that lifted and left the former England opener.

No play had been possible before lunch, due to heavy overnight and morning rain, but hard work by the Oval groundstaff meant that a start could be made at 1.10pm with Kent resuming on 118 for 9 in their second innings.

Last pair Nathan Gilchrist and Hamidullah Qadri added a further nine runs in four overs before Curran had Gilchrist caught at first slip by Clarke for thirteen to finish with 4 for 39. Clarke, whose brilliant five-wicket spell had sliced through Kent’s second innings on day three, finished with 5 for 20.

Surrey, needing 192 to win from 62 overs after bowling Kent out for a second innings 127, were themselves bowled out for 174 deep into the final session of a memorable

contest.

Matt Milnes was Kent’s other bowling hero, taking 4 for 57 – including the dramatic final wicket – and also producing superb deliveries to bowl both Sam Curran and Rikki Clarke either side of tea.

Stevens had taken three wickets in nine balls in his opening spell to leave Surrey reeling at 20 for 4 but Ben Foakes’ excellent 57 had left Kent wondering if they could close out the victory despite taking regular wickets at the other end.

Indeed, the last hour had just started, with fifteen more overs remaining, when Milnes clipped

Stansfeld make history in FA Cup

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk STANSFELD ARE looking forward to their first FA Cup fixture in their 123-year history.

They have been drawn at home to Punjab United in the extra preliminary round, with the game taking place on Wednesday, September 2 with a 7.45pm kick-off.

Since arriving at Step 6 in the football pyramid five seasons ago, Stansfeld have played in the FA Vase for the last three seasons and will be entering into their fourth campaign in the competition in 2020-21.

After a successful league season in 2019-20 – but one that was unfortunately made null and void in March – Stansfeld are one of a small number of clubs at Step 6 level that were lucky enough to be offered a chance to enter this season’s FA Cup. Managers Billy Hamlin and Jamie Phipps said: “This is a great result for the Stansfeld club and everyone involved at Stansfeld FC. “This has been years in the making with a lot of effort off the pitch. But we have also had to work hard on the pitch to get ourselves into a position to qualify

for the FA Cup, and the players’ dedication and performances over the past few seasons have meant we were fortunate enough to get an opportunity this year.

“We look forward to the challenge ahead and to add to the club’s history.”

Defender returns to Wycombe

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JASON MCCARTHY has left Millwall to re-join Wycombe Wanderers on a three-year deal.

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth hailed the defender as “an outstanding professional” after securing his return following one season with the Lions.

McCarthy, 24, played just five times for Millwall, making only one league start, a 2-1 defeat at home to QPR last September.

McCarthy went back to the Championship new boys on loan last January, but after football resumed in June the club couldn’t afford to keep him on.

The Chairboys were promoted to the second tier for the first time in their 133-year history after beating Oxford 2-1 in the play-off final at Wembley.

It is McCarthy's fourth spell with the club.

Ainsworth told Wycombe’s website:

“Jason is an outstanding professional, on and off the pitch, and is a perfect fit for Wycombe Wanderers, which is why we’ve brought him back here a number of times now.

“Ever since he was a young lad at Southampton, we spotted great potential in him and he’s lived up to that every time he’s pulled on the shirt. He can play in a number of positions which will be invaluable for us with so many games coming thick and fast in the Championship, and he’s an extremely popular member of the changing room.

“It was a shame we weren’t able to extend his loan for the play-offs but we know he was right behind the boys and his video message was one of the last things they watched before they left the hotel that night before the game. Now he’s back where he belongs and I’m really pleased to have added him to the squad with Uche Ikpeazu, Giles Phillips and more to follow.”

MILLWALL WILL kick off their 2020-21 Championship campaign against boss Gary Rowett’s former club Stoke City at The Den on September 12.

The Lions then have their first away trip the following Saturday when they travel to promoted Rotherham United.

Fans are set to be back at The Den – at a capacity of 5,994 – on October 20 when Luton Town make the short trip south.

It is set to be a testing Christmas period for Rowett’s side, with Nottingham Forest and relegated Watford at home, either side of a trip to another relegated team, Bournemouth, on Boxing Day. And the run-in doesn’t look any easier, with the return fixtures against the Cherries and the Hornets, Bristol City at The Den, before their final game, against Coventry City at St Andrew’s.

New Millwall striker was told he wasn’t ready by Spurs boss EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IT’S NO secret you need a strong chin to have a chance of being successful at Millwall.

To be able to take one and avoid dropping to the canvas, or get up off it if you land there. Many players have signed for the Lions with high expectations only to be left out for the count.

But Troy Parrott has already shown he’s made of the right stuff to prosper in the boxing stronghold of Bermondsey.

It can’t have been easy to have been told by one of the greatest managers of all time you’re not ready for the first team.

But rather than wobble to the ropes, Parrott absorbed that blow and came back for more.

It was in March this year when Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho passed that judgement on Parrott, at a time when many Spurs fans were clamouring for his inclusion.

“He’s not ready,” Mourinho, who has managed Didier Drogba and Cristiano Ronaldo, insisted. “He’s a good kid we want to help, not only on the pitch but off it. He’s a kid who’s going to have a real opportunity but when we decide it’s right.”

That opportunity now comes at Millwall. And rather than read negatively into those words from a manager that has won two European Cups and league titles in four countries, Parrott took them on board.

Asked by the News this week were those comments a blow, Parrott didn’t hesitate to respond, “No”. He added: “To be fair, he’s such an experienced manager and he’s done nearly everything in the game, so if he feels like that’s right then there must be some truth in it and I had to take it on the chin.

“I knew I just had to keep my head down in training and keep working hard. And getting this loan now is hopefully going to help me improve and push on.

“There were little conversations that were being had [at Spurs]. I was speaking to coaching staff and players finding out what I needed to do to be better. Because obviously Mourinho has worked with some of the best strikers there’s ever been. To get advice off him was great.

“I knew what I needed to do. It was helpful advice.”

Parrott is now in the hands of another manager, Gary Rowett, who Spurs believe can help develop the next stage of his career.

Parrott had interest from lots of other clubs who wanted to sign him on loan

this season, but he trusted his instincts in committing his immediate future to Millwall and Rowett.

“I just felt like I could trust him from the start,” Parrott said of his first meeting with Rowett. “I had a good gut feeling. I liked the way he explained the way the club worked, how everyone is together and how the team plays.

“I kind of bought into it and into him straightaway. That’s really why I made the decision to come to Millwall.

“I spoke to Gary probably twice before anything was agreed and I just had that gut feeling that it was the right place for me to go. I obviously spoke to Jayson Molumby a lot about the club he told me only good things.

“The main thing that stands out for me are the type of people that are in the club, the staff and the players. Just little things like making it easy for me to settle in and making me feel welcome was one of the most important things.”

Tottenham striker and current England captain Harry Kane also moved to Millwall on loan from Spurs in 2012 at the age of eighteen, scoring nine goals in 27 games.

But Parrott trusted his own judgement before deciding on a move south of the river.

“I don’t think that played a massive part in the decision,” Parrott said. “For me, it was just about finding the right place, no matter where it was. I feel like I’ve found the right place and location.

I’ve picked the best possible place for me to go.

“I’m looking forward to the season and hopefully the fans can get back into the stadium. So far the training has all been spot on and I’m loving it at the moment.

“There were so many different factors that I had to take into account before I came. There were so many different things, but again the main thing for me was feeling comfortable and that sense of togetherness that Millwall has. That’s what made it for me.

“I watched last season and I saw how well they did. I don’t see why we can’t push on even more this season and get into those play-off positions.

“I was looking at the quality that they had, and when I met Gary it just sealed it for me.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk TROY Parrott has been called up to the Republic of Ireland squad for their Nations League games against Bulgaria and Finland next month.

Millwall’s on-loan Tottenham striker Parrott, 18, will be joined in the squad for the first time by Jayson Molumby, who spent last season on loan with the Lions.

Ireland boss Stephen Kenny explained the inclusion of Parrott.

“He might not have made the squad initially [but for] David

McGoldrick’s foot injury,” Kenny said. “Troy has the characteristics that David has, in that he can play with his back to goal, drop into midfield and link the play.

“He is the player that could relate to that role the most. He is obviously a terrific finisher. After he had his appendix out, he really hit the ground running in training with Spurs. We kept a close eye on that.

“I know he went abroad [to Scotland] with Millwall last week training and did very well. He is in good nick, I believe. He is obviously someone who has a lot of potential as we’ve seen. You can’t ignore

talent. You have to promote it.”

Shane Ferguson is in Ian Baraclough’s first Northern Ireland squad for their Nations League games against Romania and Norway.

Millwall can request to postpone their EFL Cup first-round tie against Crawley, which takes place on the same weekend as the next round of internationals, if they have three or more call-ups.

But the Lions are believed to want to play the fixture as they start a hectic campaign with more games packed into a season that is shorter by more than a month.

The Lions announced last Saturday morning that former Southwark News journalist Aldridge, 27, was leaving to take up the same role at Championship rivals Stoke, Millwall’s first league opponents of the season.

Millwall recruited Ryan Woods and Troy Parrott on season-long loans this summer before Aldridge left for the Lions’ championship rivals.

Rowett has had discussions with owner John Berylson and chief executive Steve Kavanagh as the club searches for Aldridge’s successor.

But Rowett insists they won’t rush the process.

“Over the next two or three weeks there might be opportunities to sit down with a few people and see where we’re at,” Rowett told the News this

“But I’m hoping in a week or two we might not be doing too much more in this window anyway, therefore we might not be in so much of a rush.

“The most problematic bit is just the timing, really. But we won’t let it affect what we’re doing. I don’t think it will affect us signing players, we know who our targets are. We’ve worked together on that.

“I think it’s the type of window

anyway where you probably take fewer risks, there’s less money around, there’s a little bit more uncertainty.

There are probably not as many deals being done.

“It’s quite a safe window where you’re just trying to maximise what you can get before it gets back to normal. So I don’t think it will be too much of a hindrance to us signing players.”

Rowett admitted he was surprised at Aldridge’s departure.

“It was a recent thing, I only found out a day before it all got done,” Rowett said. “But as often in football, things come around quickly and you have to react quickly.

"It’s like anything, you don’t want to see anyone go that you’ve built up a good relationship with, trust with. I know he’s highly regarded here.

“Look, it is what it is. I wish him well.

But we now try to strengthen what we do in other ways. All the other staff are still there working on one or two other things. It’s business as usual.

“I’ve had conversations with Steve and John. The person coming in would have to work with us with synergy on the football side in terms of what we want from our players. And work with Steve in terms of the negotiations aspects and those parts of the job as well.

“It’s one where we’ll both sit down and discuss who we think is the right person to help bring that department forward.

“We’re not in a rush, but I’ve got a few ideas of people I’ve got good relationships with, and I’m sure Steve has.”

Reports emerged earlier in the week that the Lions, along with Swansea and Preston, had agreed personal terms with the 26-year-old.

Millwall tried to sign Lowe last summer but he moved to Wigan from Portsmouth and scored six goals in 48 games in 2019-20.

Harrow-born Lowe has two years left on his Wigan contract, but the Latics need to offload him after relegation from the Championship last season following a twelvepoint deduction for going into administration.

Millwall manager Gary Rowett wants to add at least one more attacker to his squad for next season.

The Lions were hoping to renegotiate with Derby to take Mason Bennett on a permanent deal after his loan last term.

Lowe was not involved for Wigan in their friendly against Carlisle United last weekend, and he seems certain to leave and continue his career in the Championship.

Reports in Wales this week claimed that Swansea were favourites to sign him.

Millwall sold Jason McCarthy for an undisclosed fee to his former club Wycombe on Tuesday after just one season at The Den. Rowett is relaxed about letting players leave before adding to the signings of Ryan Woods and Troy Parrott this summer.

Rowett said: “In an ideal world you’d always want to keep your squad number to a reasonable level but sometimes players have to go out before you can bring someone in.

“I don’t think we’re necessarily tied to players having to leave first. We’ve got the same sort of list of players that could go if the right offer comes in. And we’ve got a very good list of players that we’re trying to bring into the building.

“Players in are always more important than players out, but at the same time you’re always looking at balancing the books and balancing the numbers as well in terms of squad size.”
