Housing chief denies aylesbury bail out

“It will also give Aylesbury residents a better chance of staying on a regenerated estate. But there is an obvious question now about Notting Hill Genesis - if they cannot deliver the first phase of the remaining redevelopment, can they deliver the rest?”

The council says claims of a ‘bail out’ is inaccurate; arguing that work had already started on site before the agreement was reached.

According to provisional plans, it is expected that around £54.4 million of the cost will be funded by Greater London Authority funding, with the council’s own share amounting to £138.5 million, and equating to roughly £238,000 per home, if funding is secured. If not, the figure would be far higher.

The homes’ rental yield will be reinvested in the borough – another benefit in comparison to housing association rents which are not guaranteed to be kept within Southwark.

Cllr Leo Pollak, cabinet member for social regeneration, new homes and great estates, told the News: “The council’s investment in the Aylesbury estate will now not only provide 581

brand new council homes for existing residents to move to, but speeds up the development of new homes for residents who are currently living in properties that are, despite our investments, now past their natural life span and subject to numerous design flaws and heating issues.

“It also increases the overall provision of social housing across the estate, and the new council homes would be part of our ambitious 11,000 new council homes programme.

“As the council’s priority is the provision of new housing, not profit, and the costs per new home work out at roughly the same as our direct delivery of council housing, this a good solution all round for the council and most importantly the Aylesbury Estate residents.”

Notting Hill Genesis batted away claims it was unlikely to complete the project, with a spokesperson told the News yesterday: “We have worked closely with Southwark Council throughout the project and were happy to discuss their plans to increase the provision of council housing while also making it easier for residents in latter phases to move more quickly while remaining in the neighbourhood. This still needs to be taken to the NHG board later this month.

“While the council homes would make up twothirds of the first development site, it is only a small part of our overall regeneration of the area.

“We remain completely committed to our longterm plans and look forward to welcoming the first Notting Hill Genesis residents to new homes on future phases.”

His parents slammed the Trust for not admitting liability immediately.

“The consequence is that the extraordinary cost of having a baby with special needs has to be supported by the family… until a decision is made on the trust’s liability,” they said.

“The outcome differs widely depending on the social class of the family, which is truly revolting.”

But the Trust said it had admitted liability early in the High Court case, and that it was truly sorry for the failings in the baby’s care.

“We are very sorry that the care provided to the family during the birth of their child fell

short of the high standards we aim to provide to all our patients,” it said in a statement.

“We also recognise and are truly sorry for the life-long consequences of the delivery for the whole family.

“We sincerely hope the settlement approved by the High Court, which comprises annual payments and a lump sum, will ensure that the family can plan for the future, secure in the knowledge that they will be able to provide the best possible care and support to meet the needs of their child throughout their life.”

The case was described as a tragedy by Suzanne White, the parents’ solicitor, of Leigh Day. She described the compensation payout as “one of the largest of its kind” saying it “reflects the complex needs which have resulted from the injuries sustained at the time of his birth.”

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council’s new homes chief has refuted claims Tooley Street has been forced to ‘bail out’ its Aylesbury regeneration partner.

As the News reported last week, the council has struck a deal with Notting Hill Genesis to stump up £193 million to buy 280 homes planned for ‘package A’ site – due to be completed in March 2012 – for social housing. Under previous agreements these would have been sold privately or let for ‘intermediate’ rent.

Changes to the house building borrowing cap, funding from City Hall, and an acknowledgement that “we cannot return to business as usual when this pandemic is over” are all cited as factors that have enabled the council to plough in extra funding.

Although the boost to council housing on the footprint of the estate has been welcomed, campaigners argue the huge cost is ultimately a good deal for Notting Hill Genesis and an controversial one for a local authority with a strained public purse.

More than 20 campaigners gathered at the estate on Saturday, July 18, arguing Notting Hill Genesis is being bailed out after looking ‘increasingly unlikely to finish the job’. They cited a figure of £210 million which has been disputed by the council - apparently including a land receipt that has now been waived.

The High Court settlement thought to be as much as £37 million is reportedly one of the largest maternity care claims made in the history of the NHS. The boy at the centre of the claim was born in 2013, but staff at the Trust did not realise he was in the ‘breech’ position.

local nurse in Miss England semis

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk An intensive care nurse looking after coronavirus patients has reached the semi-finals of the Miss England beauty pageant.

Elizabeth Willis, 22, works as an ICU nurse in Paddington’s St Mary’s Hospital, starting just months before the coronavirus outbreak.

And after one long night shift, the Old Kent Road-based nurse decided to apply for the Miss England contest - hoping to follow in the footsteps of last year’s winner, junior doctor Bhasha Mukherjee.

If Elizabeth is successful in the final, the former King’s College student will go on to compete in the Miss World contest.

“I applied after a night shift, I’d never done a pageant before,” she said. “I saw the previous winner was a junior doctor, so I just sent in photos and didn’t think anything more of it.”

Contestants have to be “more than a pretty face” and are grilled on their general knowledge, undertake charity work, and even make their own dresses in an ‘eco fashion’ round.

Judges rank constants on how well they do in each round, while the public also vote for their favourite contestant.

“The reaction has been really positive,” said Elizabeth, who is a ‘wildcard’ entry in the semi-finals.

“I’ve told quite a few of my colleagues they were a bit surprised, but supportive.

“I was a bit unsure about whether I should do it because I didn’t want to take anything away from my patients, but my mum said: ‘You can bring recognition to nurses’.

“Me and my colleagues were helping one of my patients, and she said: ‘A future Miss England is fluffing up your pillows!’”

Since starting as an ICU nurse at the end of last year, Elizabeth has been on the frontline of the battle against coronavirus, working long shifts to care for people seriously ill from the virus.

“It was a very difficult time for everyone,” said the nurse, who also models commercially.

“Wearing PPE for hours on end, and not having any breaks, but luckily it seems to be improving. “[At the peak] It was all just coronavirus patients.

Normally we care for trauma patients, but we were just having coronavirus patients.”

The semi-final, on July 31, will take place via virtual livestream this year, because of the coronavirus restrictions.

SE5 mum plans app to beat the long queue

A Camberwell woman has found a way to help people avoid long queues caused by social distancing - inspired by her experience as a mother.

Sabrina Benjamin has a young autistic son who finds waiting in queues difficult.

But with new social distancing measures in place to help businesses keep staff and customers safe, long lines are already more commonplace. People have even queued for up to three hours to get a haircut, according to reports.

To get around this, Ms Benjamin built an app to help customers book places in advance. Q Manager keeps track of all a customer’s bookings for various businesses over three weeks.

She said: “I worked in retail for several years and I’ve been concerned that many shops and small businesses could struggle as people might be put off by the thought of queuing for a long time. The app is supposed to be a way of dealing with that and making life easier for businesses and customers.”

Asked whether this could lead to people booking spaces in a barber, for example, and then deciding not to meet the appointment, Ms Benjamin said: “Yes of course we’ve thought about that, like

in a restaurant for example. But because you give your email address and phone number, the business can contact you to follow up.”

When questioned about the possibility that people might be uncomfortable handing over contact details and being contacted by local businesses, Ms Benjamin said that businesses are only supposed to get in touch regarding bookings and any unwelcome calls could be reported. The app is in line with data protection rules, she added.

Because Q Manager holds bookings for three weeks, it can also help people and businesses stay compliant with the government coronavirus contact tracing scheme, Ms Benjamin said. For example if someone has been in a barber with someone else who has tested positive, the business can easily contact them to let them know.

Q Manager costs £29.99 per month for businesses and is free for customers.

The app launched recently and just two businesses are using it so far. But several other larger companies are considering joining too, Ms Benjamin said.

She added: “The greatest thing that you can give people is time, and the reality is, people are tired of wasting hours in long queues. Queue management apps are the future.”

Leisure centres may be brought back in-house

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Leisure centres could be brought back in-house after the COVID-19 pandemic left Southwark Council giving its contractor a £1.2 million bailout because of four months of closure.

In council papers published before Tooley Street’s cabinet meeting on Tuesday (July 14), councillor Rebecca Lury, the deputy leader who also holds the leisure portfolio, explained that “much had changed” since the council had entered its contract with Sports and Leisure Management Ltd (SLM), in 2016.

“We are now coming to the time when leisure centres are once again allowed to open, and it seemed like the best time to reconsider the whole of our leisure services provision.

“This is not a discussion that we have entered lightly, and is one that has been achieved thanks to the ongoing conversations between officers and SLM that are always aiming to achieve the best outcome for our residents.”

Her recommendations include operating as normal until at least March 2021 when the council should consider all options from a full review into the service.

The council is now preparing a more detailed report for September’s cabinet meeting on options to move leisure centres in house, establishing a charitable trust to run the service, or continuing with SLM until the contract ends in 2023 Under the contract terms SLM, which operates under the name Everyone Active, was offered a peppercorn rent for seven years with the option to renew.

After gyms were locked down during the pandemic, the council agreed a support package for covering the period March to June 30 to the total of £1.2 million.

The funds include making up the shortfall of pay from the furlough scheme so staff received 100 per cent of their salary; salaries for a ‘skeleton staff’ to maintain sites, other utilities and maintenance costs and a waived management free.

In early July, council leader Peter John told the News: “Our contractors are saying they need money immediately to keep going, but that is five million not in our budget for things like our leisure facilities.

“There are many other organisations that are going to be challenged but our pockets are not bottomless.”

At the cabinet meeting, he told his colleagues how although the company was struggling financially its two key shareholders received pay outs of more than fifteen million in the last two years.

In a statement published by the SE1 website, Everyone Active’s spokesperson said COVID-19 had “undoubtedly had a significant impact’ on its business.

“Consequently, we are negotiating with all our local authority partners to find the best way to move forward and the support we have requested as part of our discussions - including those with Southwark Council - does not go beyond the terms that are detailed within our partnership agreement.”

‘Excluded for eating a biscuit’

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Rising school exclusions are marring the life chances of some of the most disadvantaged young people in Southwark, with accounts of pupils banned for eating a biscuit in class, forgetting a PE kit, opening a door ‘too hard’ and missing an exam when ill.

The system’s failings have been laid bare by a new report from Southwark Council’s education and business and scrutiny commission, published this month.

It reveals that children from black and ethnic minority backgrounds, those with special educational needs, and children who are eligible for free school meals, are most affected.

The report shared the stories of Chanay, who said she was given a fixed-term exclusion for eating a biscuit in class after skipping lunch to

catch up on work, and another exclusion for forgetting her PE kit.

Another student, Olamide, told the commission she had a fixed-term exclusion for the behaviour of her friends - even though she was not in the class at the time.

Meanwhile, Alex said he received a five-day exclusion for “opening a door too hard”. Alex explained he was later permanently excluded after missing an exam due to illness.

Nationally, permanent exclusions have risen by 71 per cent since 2012, with fixedterm exclusions also rising by nearly 54 per cent. In the 2017-18 academic year, 410,000 temporary exclusions were recorded across the country. In Southwark, exclusion rates have doubled in the same period.

Although only 0.2 per cent of children are permanently excluded in any given year, their number are disproportionately represented in the justice system, with 23 per cent of young offenders having been excluded.

And it is not just formal exclusions that are

rising. Concern has also been highlighted over ‘off-rolling’ – where children are removed from the school roll and educated at home – often in the interests of the school rather than the child.

The number of children home educated in Southwark has more than doubled since 2017; from 96 to 216 aged between five to sixteen.

Their outcomes are particularly poor. In the 2017-18 academic year none who completed their alternative provision achieved a pass in English or maths - despite a full-time place in alternative provision costs around £24,000 per year, on average, in London.

The report outlines that Southwark Council commissions 100 places at two pupil referral unit sites – Porlock Hill and Davey Street.

Shockingly, 91 per cent of children attending them receive special educational needs support.

The report explains Ark has been engaging with the council to analyse its exclusion rate and how this can be improved but, it notes: “Disappointingly, the Harris chain of schools did not engage with the commission’s investigation.

“Whilst we cannot identify what has driven the exceptionally high levels of exclusions in Harris Academy Peckham, we do hope that Harris schools will work closely with Southwark, and indeed with other schools to bring down rates of exclusions across all of its schools that are under-performing.”

Recommendations from the commission’s findings include a zero permanent exclusion target by 2020, a review into the disproportionate impact on ethnic minorities and children with special needs, improved alternative provision and earlier intervention at primary age, and stronger action against schools that off-roll pupils.

The performing arts school has been temporarily draped in tape to highlight how the performing arts are ‘missing’ – and many venues face permanent closure. It was created by Scene Change, a community of theatre designers, who have also worked on a similar striking piece at the National Theatre.

2020 was set to be a big year for Mountview – its 75th anniversary.

Although currently closed due to COVID-19, the school has been shortlisted for The Stage’s Theatre Building of the Year 2020.

Its joint chief executives Sarah Preece and Stephen Jameson also received special recognition at the prestigious Olivier Awards; in acknowledgement for the school’s relocation to Peckham and commitment to promoting diversity within the arts.

Getting Camberwell Station back on track

build on a business case to push for Camberwell Train Station to reopen.

The bid was submitted by the SE5 Forum with backing from MPs Harriet Harman and Helen Hayes to

the ‘Restoring Your Railway’ fund, set up to analyse sections of axed and disused tracks – including those victim of Beeching’s cuts in the 60s – to see where there is potential for new capacity.

Camberwell’s station closed to passengers in 1916 and goods services ceased in 1964. Funding would help with plans including building costs, timetabling options, early design work and feedback from residents.

Their long-running campaign to reopen the historic station had a ‘major setback’ in 2018 when a TfL study suggested any benefit to the immediate area would be outweighed by the impact on longer distance commuters – and ultimately not the best use of funds.

Barbara Pattinson, Chair of SE5 Forum, said: “We would like the judges

on the Restoring Your Railway award panel to know that Camberwell may be an inner city area, but the quality of transport and access is relatively poor.

“Helping us to develop the business case for re-opening Camberwell train station would put us on track for improving facilities which would really help local residents, as well as all the millions attending King’s College Hospital and the Maudsley Hospital.”

Helen Hayes, MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, says: “Along with my constituency neighbour Harriet Harman MP, I met with the Minister for Transport, presenting him with a petition signed by more than 2,000 of our constituents, asking for the train station to be re-opened.

“So we were both delighted to sponsor this SE5 Forum bid to Restoring Your Railway.”

Southwark Council’s planning committee is set to decide on the proposals on July 27, which would see the club and property developer investors Meadow Partners build a new 4,000-seater stadium on Greendale playing fields to make room for 219 new homes on the site of the current ground at Champion Hill, which is next door.

But local residents group Friends of Green Dale and green space advocates Campaign for the Preservation of Rural England have spoken out against the plans, warning of a loss of communal space and pointing out that Greendale is Metropolitan Open Land (MOL) - giving it protected status.

Mayor Sadiq Khan’s London plan says: “The strongest protection should be given to London’s Metropolitan Open Land and inappropriate development refused, except in very special

“The use of Green Dale astro turf is thriving.

Despite the fact it has not been cared for as we would wish, our community loves it. It is surrounded by a green curtain that protects our children and young people from pollution. The replacement Multi Use Games Area is smaller than Sport England recommendations and is next to the Sainsbury’s delivery area so there is a risk of pollution...

“DHFC was made homeless and now it is subjecting our great community to the same treatment.”

Alice Roberts of the Campaign for the Preservation of Rural England warned Sadiq Khan in January that “the redevelopment of the stadium should not be at the expense of much-used and valued natural open space, including a well-used community football pitch.”

Dulwich Hamlet and the club’s supporters trust said in a joint statement: “This is the moment our fans have fought long and hard to see happen, to secure the long term future and objectives that can only be delivered by this scheme – allowing the club to remain owned by its fans and stay in the heart of its community.

Despite this, planning officers have recommended that the council approve the proposals, arguing that the new development meets the “very special circumstances” requirement in principle - while also raising concerns about the impact on the local community.

The plans also go against recommendations made by the Ecology Consultancy to Southwark Council to make Greendale a site of importance for nature conservation. The consultancy said in a 2015 report: “The site probably offers one of the few remaining accessible areas of natural habitat in the local area as most nearby open spaces are managed for amenity and recreation.”

The planned housing falls short on affordability requirements, with 73 of 219 homes - or 33 per cent - deemed affordable. Of these, 52 homes would be socially rented. A planning document says that “in terms of habitable rooms this would equate to 35.4 per cent” - taking it just above City Hall’s general affordability threshold. Meadow Residential say that they would add in another four affordable homes if they won a mayoral grant.

The plans also provide for a new public play area and a ‘linear park’.

A spokesperson for Friends of Green Dale told the News: “We respect the club’s fans and the club’s reputation. We know that many members of [Dulwich Hamlet] DHFC’s family do great work.

“However, the Friends of Green Dale object to the DHFC/Meadow planning application. Amongst our concerns, we understand that our community of Camberwell and East Dulwich will not have free

“Without you all, the corner could never have been turned and we hope the committee will approve the application and allow the club to continue in its new direction, adding sporting provision and facilities in Southwark to the work we already do in the community.

“The club and the trust are respectful of the fact that there has been some local opposition to the scheme primarily due to the renovation and enclosure of our derelict astro turf pitch but, after long and careful consideration of that and all other factors, the planning officers at London Borough of Southwark have recommended that the application should be approved.

“We believe it is important to listen to different views and opinions before conclusions are reached and it was encouraging to see not only that the council’s process allowed everyone to have a voice, but also the vast majority were in favour of the plans.

“We would like to thank all of you who have asked for updates, since the application was submitted, for your patience but it was important to invest the time required to address every concern and idea raised.

“We have been committed to engaging positively with all stakeholders to deliver the best possible scheme, which means the application that will be presented is submitted both with the support of the community and the positive recommendations from the council and other consulting authorities.”

Staff at King’s College Hospital were able to make a breakthrough in the care of a coronavirus patient who had dementia after discovering his love of tea.

The vulnerable 79-year-old man was admitted in April 2019, showing signs of dementia as well as neglect.

Originally the man, who was very confused, was abusive to staff, and refused to take his medication, while his hair had become matted from lack of washing.

Nurses and doctors on the ward had to figure out how to build a relationship with the elderly pensioner - and the secret turned out to be a cuppa.

“Our immediate concern was making sure he was properly hydrated and taking the meds he needed,” said Mable Maphosa, the ward’s clinical coordinator.

“Nursing colleagues invested a lot of time in building a relationship with him, and encouraging him to eat and drink.

“When we discovered he had a love of tea, we were able to make his life a little easier.”

Doctors and nurses on the ward bought the gentleman a new outfit, and even gave his beard a shave.

“We suddenly saw the man behind the

beard, and it meant the world to him,” added Ms Maphosa.

“The change was so dramatic, and we had no idea it would make such a big difference. He gained so much confidence and started chatting happily to staff and patients.”

The patient has now been transferred into a residential care home after two months at King’s, where he is “thriving” say medics at the hospital.

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Amazon has removed balcony BBQs from sale after a devastating fire in a block of flats in Deptford which left residents homeless.

The products are designed to be used on balconies, despite warnings from fire chiefs that they are highly irresponsible.

The fire on Deptford’s Childers Street in May, was caused by a BBQ being disposed of in a plastic bag on a balcony. 100 people were evacuated.

Now retailers Amazon and Menkind have removed the products from sale and offered customers a refund after being contacted by the London Fire Brigade.

The Brigade’s deputy commissioner, Richard Mills, urged anyone who has bought a balcony BBQ to raise their concerns with retailers, and not to ignore warnings about their use.

“Products designed specifically for people to barbecue on their balconies are incredibly irresponsible, and we are now asking customers to take action immediately and not to ignore the warning,” he said.

“The fact these companies took such swift action to take these products off the shelves shows what a very real risk they are.”

But other retailers ignored a letter sent to them by firefighters, said Mr Mills – and are still selling the products.

“However, we remain deeply concerned that other companies did not respond to my letter and that these products may still be available for sale and customers are unaware of the dangers of using them.”

London firefighters have attended more than 600 balcony fires in three years, he added.

A spokesperson for Amazon said it was committed to working closely with the authorities to remove products which risk a fire from sale.

“As soon as the London Fire Brigade raised concerns and new evidence about these particular products we took quick action, removed them from sale and contacted customers,” said the retail giant.

“We value the expertise of the London Fire Brigade and are committed to working closely with them and other relevant authorities on these matters.”

Smoking and Health suggests that around one million people have given up smoking since the coronavirus pandemic hit.

Smokers could be at risk of worse Covid-19 symptoms if they catch coronavirus, the government has said.

Public Health England guidance on smoking says: “There is strong evidence that smoking tobacco is generally associated with an increased risk of developing respiratory viral infections.

“Smoking causes damage to the lungs and airways and harms the immune system, reducing your ability to fight infection.”

Statistics released in July by Public Health England show that 15.6 per cent of people in Southwark were smokers in 2019 - putting the borough the fifth-worst for cigarette use and the worst in inner London.

Southwark ranked 39th out of 149 local authorities surveyed in England.

Barking and Dagenham had the highest rate of smoking, with 18.1 per cent. Waltham Forest, Sutton and Enfield made up the rest of the top five.

Richmond-upon-Thames, Kingstonupon-Thames and Bromley had the lowest smoking rates in London, with 8 per cent, 9.2 per cent and 9.4 per cent respectively.

At 12.9 per cent, a slightly lower proportion of Londoners smoked in 2019 compared with the rest of the UK, where 13.9 per cent of people overall smoked.

McKenzie must serve at least 35 years for killing ex and his baby Court heard how the Peckham man stabbed his pregnant ex-girlfriend 21 times

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Peckham man who killed his pregnant ex-girlfriend and her baby by stabbing her 21 times has been jailed for life.

Aaron McKenzie, of Peckham Park Road, must serve life behind bars, with a minimum term of 35 years, after being found guilty of the murder of his ex-girlfriend Kelly-Mary Fauverelle in Thorton Heath.

He was also found guilty of the manslaughter of their baby, Riley, who was delivered at the scene but sadly died in hospitals days later.

An Old Bailey trial heard how Kelly, eight months pregnant, was found dying by her sister in the family home in the early hours of the morning.

McKenzie, a 26-year-old crane driver, had broken into her ground floor bedroom as her family slept upstairs, and stabbed her 21 times, jurors heard.

A cot for baby Riley had been set up in the room. Family members did not see anyone enter or leave

the property as the murder took place on June 30, 2019.

The trial heard how he posed as a victim, telling police he had nothing to do with the horrific murder.

He even joined family members as they mourned their loss, and went to the hospital where doctors were battling to save Riley’s life.

Just five hours after the attack, at around 3am in the morning, McKenzie went on a driving lesson the court heard – acting “totally normal” according to his driving instructor.

Police say McKenzie confessed to his crimes via his solicitor during an interview after being made a suspect, telling them: “No one else was involved in this. There was no reason for it other than my faults.”

But in court, the defendant gave the name of another man he said was responsible for the killing of Royal Mail worker Kelly and her baby.

Jurors deliberated for nearly three hours to reach their guilty verdicts earlier this month before he was sentenced last Friday.

Two charged after gun stop

Jesus Da Silva, 22, of Kenwood Gardens, Redbridge, and Jaan Mohammed, 18, of Mandeville Street, Hackney, were charged last Wednesday with possession of a firearm.

Da Silva was also charged with possession of criminal property.

They appeared in custody via video link at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Mums for lungs launch ‘guerrilia’ campaign to get parents walking to school with over 1,100 posters

Mums for Lungs, who were founded in 2017, say that their surveys suggest that some parents are already choosing not to use their cars. They add that they are campaigning for more measures to encourage people to drive less, like cycle lanes.

The campaign, organised by London air quality campaigners Mums for Lungs, aims to encourage people to walk or cycle more when schools reopen for the new term in September, instead of using cars.

More than 1,100 posters are being put up this week across 20 London boroughs, with Southwark among them.

Campaigners believe the new initiative is timely. Research from April suggested a link between high air pollution and coronavirus deaths in England.

Serious health conditions like asthma, heart and lung disease, stroke, miscarriage and dementia can also be made worse by air pollution. Between 28,000 and 36,000 deaths a year can be attributed to long-term exposure, according to Public Health England.

Ms Dutton added: “Now, more than ever, with possible links between air pollution and Covid-19 transmission, we all need to make sure our travel choices are as non-polluting as possible.”

A third man is charged with the murder of Donnell Rhule

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk A third man was due to appear in court on Saturday accused of the murder of 18-year-old Donnell Rhule on the Kingswood Estate last week.

Twenty-one-year-old Kieran Robinson, of Baldry Garden, Streatham, was charged with murder on Friday (July 17) and was due to appear via video at Croydon Magistrates’ Court the following morning.

Eren Iniss, 26, of Turpington Lane, Bromley, was charged with Donnell’s murder on Sunday July 12 and Sean Robinson, 25, of Newlands Park, Sydenham was also charged with murder the following day (Monday July 13).

Murder victim Donnell was sadly pronounced dead at the scene of the stabbing on Wednesday evening, July 8, on the estate’s Seeley Drive.

Police in Southwark pledged extra patrols in the wake of the fatal stabbing, with Southwark’s top cop describing the murder as “tragic.”

The woman, 26, was attacked at around 3.30am in the early hours of Sunday July 12 near Clapham Common North Side.

Police said the suspect is a white, balding man in his late 40s or 50s, wearing a long-sleeved dark top. He left the scene on foot, walking up Victoria Rise towards Wandsworth Road.

The victim is being supported by specialist officers, police added.

Officers said they want to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen something. They also urged motorists with dash cam footage of the scene to come forward.

The 18-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of murder and attempted murder yesterday, where he remains.

Shortly after, a 26-year-old man turned up at hospital with stab wounds, which police believe was sustained in the same incident.

These were judged to be “not lifethreatening.”

Separately, another eighteen-yearold man was arrested on suspicion of murder on Monday, July 13. He has since been bailed pending further enquiries until a date in mid-August.

50-year-old elephant gets rehoused in regen

Elephant and Castle’s iconic statue will be moved to a new home in October after being refurbished.

The landmark statue will be relocated to neighbouring Castle Square for the duration of the temporary retail park after it has been given a clean and any repairs needed.

Under current plans, the statue will eventually move to an as yet undecided permanent site, when the town centre redevelopment project is completed.

A spokesperson for the town centre developers said: “Having the Elephant in Castle Square will allow it to remain in the heart of the community and for the 25 businesses from the shopping centre who have relocated to this area to remain trading in close proximity to the iconic landmark which has been the emblem for the area for more than five decades.”

Teen stabbed in Bermondsey Local man banned from City of London

The stab victim, in his late teens, is in a “stable condition” in hospital, say police.

A witness told the News that around fifteen youngsters were fighting with weapons near to the Arnold Estate, two of whom had been on a motorbike. A female passerby was pushed to the ground and one youth was stabbed six times on top of her,”

claimed the witness, who didn’t want to be named. “I gave first aid to the victim. He was taken to the Royal London Hospital.”

Officers confirmed they believed the youngster had sustained his injuries in a fight with other young people near the estate at around 9.30pm.

No arrests have been made since the stabbing, but police urged anyone who has information to contact them on 101 quoting CAD 8411/19 July.

The witness said they were speaking about what they saw because they were “extremely concerned with the level of violence around this area.”

A court order against Alex Evans, 41, bars him from entering the City of London for five years.

If the order, granted on July 9, is breached, Mr Evans could face a jail sentence.

A City of London police spokesman told the News they had sought the Criminal Behaviour Order against the “persistent offender in the City” over his “antisocial

behaviour and shoplifting.”

It bars him from entering any street within the Square Mile, designated by a City of London crest and EC1, 2, 3 and 4 postcodes.

“This sends a clear message – the City is closed to crime,” said the force.

The orders, which replaced ASBOs, are “aimed at tackling the most serious and persistent offenders,” according to the Crown Prosecution Service.

They can be used to bar offenders from certain activities, or to compel them to engage with activities to help prevent reoffending.

Unions fear Southbank Centre will miss out on arts bailout

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The Southbank Centre could miss out on the government’s £1.5bn bailout fund, according to unions, raising the prospect of ‘huge’ job losses at the institution.

The arts centre, the UK’s largest of its kind, has already warned up to 400 employees could be up for redundancy out of a workforce of 577.

The Unite union claims the centre is not due to be eligible for the government industry bailout, saying it would be a “national disgrace” if the centre didn’t get a significant share of the fund.

But the Southbank Centre said it was still waiting to hear for more details about the emergency funding.

“The Southbank Centre is the UK largest arts complex and a jewel in the crown of London’s cultural scene – the prospect of it not receiving any financial support from the government’s £1.57 billion rescue package for the arts would be a national disgrace,” said Unite’s regional officer, Rose Keeping.

“Although some redundancies were not unexpected, we are appalled at the huge numbers at the Southbank Centre who may lose their jobs.”

The PCS Union said it would “fight” to protect jobs at the organisation, hundreds of which are currently undergoing through the redundancy consultation.

“The Southbank Centre is so important for working class access to the arts,” said the union’s Steven Warwick.

“We will work closely with Unite to fight to save the jobs of those hundreds of staff, who have made the Southbank Centre one of the jewels in the crown of UK culture.”

But the centre said it was still waiting to find out if it could apply to the grants and what they would entail.

“Our ability to reopen our venues is currently still linked to the removal of any form of social distancing but we will wait to see if the rescue package provides any level of support that could change that position,” said a spokesperson.

The centre’s seated venues, which include the Royal Festival Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall, are likely to remain closed until April 2021 because of social distancing requirements.”

Kieran Sandford, 22, has been running free gaming sessions for youngsters since December, under the name ‘ForG4mersSake’.

Alongside free access to consoles for young people from some of Southwark’s most deprived areas, the initiative also runs workshops to help attendees with employment prospects.

The gaming sessions, often held at Peckham Levels, have been attended by more than 100 people at a time, said Mr Sandford.

“Growing up, I was always gaming,” he said. “It kept me off the streets, it allowed me to focus on something that wasn’t in with the wrong crowd.

“So I was just looking for a way to give back. From all my experiences, I started up gaming events for young people - a lot of the people I grew up with didn’t have access to a gaming console. So the ambition was to give them a games console to keep them off the streets.”

Coronavirus has prevented the group from meeting in person during lockdown, although they hope to begin again with face masks and gloves for safety, said Kieran.

During lockdown, the youngsters have been playing online competitions instead.

“At the moment, it’s self-funded,” said the 22-year-old. “We’ve done about ten or fifteen since December, it’s massively set me back. I’d be quite scared to look at how much - around 15, 20,000 easily.

“But I’m willing to put everything I have, I’m going to do everything I can to make sure it works.”

prince of peckham: free cocktails for the NHS for a year A Peckham boozer will offer a free daily cocktail to anyone who works in the NHS to thank them for their work during the pandemic.

The Prince of Peckham, on Clayton Road, will offer the free drink to anyone with a staff NHS card from Monday to Friday when it reopens on July 23.

Its owner, Clement Ogbonnaya, said it was a way of giving back to hard-working nurses and doctors who battled to help those suffering coronavirus.

“I think historically the NHS gets a raw deal,” he said. “I didn’t want

to feel like I was jumping on a bandwagon, I’ve been supporting the NHS forever.

“Nothing can compare to saving people’s lives, but we just wanted to give them a little bit of respite.”

Clement’s wife, and sister-in-law both work in the NHS, meaning he has seen the impact the crisis has had on frontline staff.

The 38-year-old said that to get the promotion, customers would have to show their NHS card and then be given a loyalty pass for the drinks. Drinks are available all day Monday to Friday, until after 8pm on Friday.

NEWS 19 Volunteer with food packages

Coin Street dishes up to 9,000 meals Social enterprise, Coin Street, has dished up 9,000 meals to those in need since lockdown began in March.

This has helped an estimated 1,040 residents in Waterloo and north Southwark.

Volunteers has also helped people to find masks and care packages, running ‘drop-in’ calls to check people in the local community were coping well during lockdown. 248 care packages and 150 washable masks have been given out to people of all ages. Teams have been making regular ‘check in’ phone calls, helped locals access and use Zoom and are running virtual sessions to help residents use the platform.

“We are witnessing the community pulling together, looking after each other and trying harder to be in sync,” said Coin Street’s Natalie Bell, who heads up community work. “Volunteers from all backgrounds are contributing, which has been heart-warming.

“Staff are supporting each other emotionally and practically which has strengthened us and kept us going.”

chef serves up meals for fifty years at St Thomas’s A chef at St Thomas’ Hospital is celebrating a remarkable fifty years in the NHS – and has never taken a sick day.

Louisa Batista was only eighteen when she started working at the hospital on July 7, 1970. But despite working in the NHS for half a century, she has no plans to hang up her apron.

The span of her career is likely to make her among the longest serving employees of the NHS. Louisa began working on the wards as a housekeeper just five days after arriving into the UK from Portugal, before working in the catering department, because she wanted to go dancing at the weekends.

“I used to serve drinks on the wards and patients would teach me the words for sugar, tea and coffee – it took more than a year until I could speak the language properly,” said the 68-year-old, who lives in Vauxhall.

She now prepares around seventy meals a day for patients with special diet needs – and says while she has encountered some fussy eaters, most are happy with the cooking.

For patients sadly terminally ill, Louisa even meets them and finds out what they would like to eat, buying it if it’s not in stock.

Hotels offer free accommodation for our doctors and nurses

Frontline staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’ are among those being offered free overnight accommodation by a string of youth hostels.

The charity YHA has been given £45,000 of funding to put up doctors and nurses working on the Covid frontline in central

London for free.

The hostel on Bolsolver Street allows staff who can’t return home for whatever reason to be close to work.

Among those who’ve taken up the offer is Zoe Glossop, who works at Guy’s and St Thomas’.

Previously Zoe would commute

to the capital from her home in Manchester when needed, but she now stays at the hostel.

“I am so very grateful for the free accommodation in central London right now,” said Zoe. “In the current economic conditions, it has made it affordable for me to continue to

The stays are valid for up to two weeks, free-of-charge. All accommodation is in private rooms with dedicated toilet and shower facilities.

Incompetent decisions and terrible consequences

O

n January 30 the World Health Organisation (WHO) described the Coronavirus as a global emergency.

It had already claimed thousands of lives in China and was spreading quickly to other countries with devastating consequences.

Some governments acted quickly to protect their people, including in New Zealand and South Korea and are credited with swift, effective responses to the international alarm.

The virus reached the UK before WHO put out their alert but at that point Ministers were still discussing ‘herd immunity’ and the Prime Minister personally dismissed a lockdown in February.

This initial callous response has allowed the virus to wreak havoc in so many lives across the country and speaks volumes about Johnson.

Sadly, we have seen over 65,000 more deaths this year than usual as the NHS has battled valiantly to cope under huge pressure.

Our local council has provided swift, urgent help to individuals, businesses and local charities shifting from routine activities to supplying food and maintaining telephone company for isolated people. The council also provided accommodation for rough sleepers to prevent the spread of the virus. Some areas of UK public services have been exemplary and deserve our thanks and praise as we still witness the damage the pandemic has caused and the continued threat to people’s health and our economy.

The government did not lockdown until 23rd March; three months after the WHO warning.

Ministers may try to deny their slow, inadequate response, but the facts speak for themselves and an inquiry will no doubt want to probe other incompetent decisions which had terrible consequences.

Like doctors and nurses not having PPE. Like hundreds of older people being forced into care homes where no one was tested only to see ministers later claim they ‘threw a protective ring around care homes’. A better analogy would be a death grip for the families who avoidably lost loved

ones as a result. The government’s own figures suggest 30,000 additional people died in care.

Last week the health secretary claimed 500,000 people would be tested every day by October.

Germany hit this target in April.

But the UK has never reached the 100,000 daily tests set in May and I have zero confidence that the new target will be delivered.

The tracing app has been a disaster and leaves almost 80 per cent of the people known to have Covid uncontacted. Any inquiry must get to the bottom of this catalogue of failures. The boastful claims of being ‘world-beating’ have been despicable frankly.

Nowhere else in the world has fared so badly but seen Ministers act with such braggadocio about their own inadequacy.

I’ve been doing everything I can in parliament to stand up for local people by shining a light on the government’s failings.

My questions to ministers have revealed that a third of the two million people who submitted claims for Universal Credit at the start of the crisis actually got nothing. I’ve also been highlighting the government’s disastrous approach to bringing UK nationals back home after they were stranded abroad through my role on the Foreign Affairs Committee. I had to pressure ministers personally on behalf of over 50 local people to help them return to Southwark from sixteen different countries and even now some are still stranded. Foreign secretary Dominic Raab was quick to praise the government’s ‘unprecedented’ response, but the fact is Germany hired 30 times more charter flights than the UK. The government must be more honest, especially with so many jobs on the line. Unemployment has risen dramatically in Southwark and thousands more jobs are propped up by schemes ending soon. Spin, deceit and false claims are no solution. We need to see protection for jobs and livelihoods in our community and nationally. Many people have already suffered greatly. We are not through this yet but further suffering is still avoidable.

The rights of the child

I

t’s crunch time for Green Dale Fields. Property developers want permission to build a new football stadium on the playing fields, in order to build 219 flats for sale on the site of the current stadium.

Four council estates surround Green Dale – Champion Hill, Cleve Hall, Denmark Hill and East Dulwich Estate. By my estimate, about one thousand children live in these flats, with no gardens and ‘No Ball Games’ signs on the walls.

Green Dale is a five-minute walk away. Since Southwark created a new path, and even more so through the lockdown, the three astroturf pitches have been busy with overlapping informal activities: football, cricket, volleyball, children learning to scoot and cycle.

Parents sit on the surrounding grassy banks, keeping an eye on things.

Article 7 of the 1959 Declaration of the Rights of the Child enshrines ‘the right to recreational activities’. With Southwark having some of the highest levels of obesity in the country and many overcrowded homes, open spaces like this are essential for physical and mental health.

Instead of the astroturf, the developers are proposing a caged ‘kickabout’ court just one twentieth the size. It would inevitably have less flexibility and social value – no room for onlookers or for toddlers mixing with the big kids. Instead of being in a secluded field, it would be close to the new flats (council planners have queried the impact on future residents) and a supermarket delivery area.

In response to public concerns about children being exposed to air pollution from HGVs, the council officers write in their report that ‘it is common within inner London for play areas and parks to be next to or close to heavily trafficked roads which would have more exposure to air pollutants’.

I find this comment staggering. Air pollution is a deadly time-bomb for the health of children. To approve this proposal would mean choosing to expose children to higher levels of pollution than now, and choosing to take away space for informal play from a thousand children who – during lockdown and during school holidays – simply have nowhere else they are allowed to kick a ball.

The dead Lime in Dog Kennel Hill Open Space may have had little visual significance but left alone it would be regarded as having great significance by future generations. Leaving dead wood standing provides vital habitat for endangered species. This particular Lime had been suggested for a heritage Tree Preservation Order (TPO) due to its exceptional amenity value.

What the Dickens?

Coronavirus has put a spanner in many people’s best-laid plans.

Among them are a businessman’s zany idea to purchase 100 sheep and drive them over London Bridge.

Dan Tim O’Sullivan had been awarded the freedom of the city in 2019 - an ancient honour which traditionally gives recipients the right to drive sheep over the major crossing.

The annual tradition dates back to the 12th century, when ‘freemen’ were allowed to enter London without having to pay a toll.

Mr O’Sullivan now plans to purchase his sheep next year, according to media in his native Ireland.

It is just as well that he did not plan on doing it this year: the bridge is restricted because of roadworks, and while pedestrians are allowed, we get the feeling the authorities might not take too kindly to a flock of sheep messing up their construction work.

Sniffing around Parliament

A heroine pooch, who was awarded a ‘canine OBE’ for her work during the terror attack on Borough Market has been given a special tour of Parliament - even sitting in the speaker’s chair.

Poppy, an explosives detection dog, was among the canines helping to secure Borough Market and London Bridge following the attack in 2017.

Now she has put her nose to the test in Parliament, even meeting the Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle in the process.

“We are so lucky to have police dogs searching Parliament every day to keep us safe,” he said.

We can’t be the only ones thinking politics might be better if there were more dogs in Parliament?

Strictly on time

When you’re dancing, you have to keep good timing. But that lesson seems to have been lost on Strictly Come Dancing’s Dr Ranj Singh, who works at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust.

The telly star, who regularly appears on This Morning, shared a howler with fans this week, when he revealed that he was early for work - by two whole months.

The mishap occurred because he mixed up his dates when covering a colleague’s shift, thinking he was due to work on July 19, not September 19.

The doctor laughed off his timing blunder - blaming it on ‘lockdown brain’.

Fans loved it, with one praising him on his commitment: “At least your’e ready and willing!”

Are schools too quick to write some pupils off?

E

xclusions often lead to poor academic results, reduced life chances and extreme stress placed on families who see pupil referral units and other types of alternative provision as an educational scrapheap.

Students who are sent to referral units are much more likely to end up in the criminal justice system.

Their cohort is over-represented in prison.

These units are also a known hunting ground for gangs looking to groom youngsters to do their dirty work.

The fact that a majority of students in this type of setting from Southwark have some kind of special educational need is shocking in itself – let alone when you consider the disproportionate representation of children from minority backgrounds.

If we take the starting point that all children are inherently vulnerable and in need of help and support regardless of the type of behaviour they may or may not engage in at school, we then see that writing off children is a completely outdated approach. But it’s not just schools keen to off-roll or exclude to boost their figures who are at fault – they are inheriting a problem that builds up over years of inadequate support for families in crisis.

Southwark Council’s commission into exclusions

has been held precisely because as a local authority it has little control over the system, but is left to cope with many of the failings from a lack of early years support.

Furthermore, today’s confusing school system means students’ experiences are largely determined by their provider – whether academy, free school, foundation, faith school, private school or otherwise. To achieve zero permanent exclusions, these schools and larger chains will have to work together and allow a degree of interrogation and intervention in how they are run – potentially against their own ethos of greater independence and control.

Alternative provision costs, per year in London, around £24,000 for a single pupil. Some will turn their lives around and go on to do great things.

But for those who do become young offenders, it can cost £100,000 or more to incarcerate them in specialist institutions – more than going to Eton.

It’s a huge waste of time and money considering how few go on to gain any real qualifications, but do end up in the ‘pipeline to prison’.

Any further investment in those first few years and at primary age will ultimately reap dividends for schools and pupils alike. In the meantime, high achieving and successful academy chains need to look hard at their exclusion policies and ask whether any pupil really deserves to be on the scrapheap.

The Sensation From Isolation

L

ocal artist Rod Kitson has curated a sensational exhibition of over 200 artworks created in lockdown from an astounding 140 artists, with submissions from the trained to the novice, and ages ranging from 5 to 76. Plus, with prices from £20 to £1300 there is something to fit everyone’s pocket, writes Michael Holland.

Kitson let the News in for a sneak preview of The Art of Isolation while the show was still being hung and we were privileged to get a guided tour

by the curator who said he’d placed the works very close together ‘as a counterbalance to social-distancing’.

The artist explained how the work had been sent from all over London and beyond, and included crafts such as knitting and DIY, fine art, abstract art, landscape, collage, figurative and portraiture, with sculpture being well represented, and several short films being shown on a loop. He was keen to show me the broken sledgehammer that signified the work and effort put into a loft conversion, and the fine darning on a pair of jeans, because

Rod Kitson is an artist who can see the beauty in everything and says his philosophy for this show is that, ‘it is more about the energy of making something than producing something that’s perfect’.

One section in the pop-up gallery was given over to portraits, but these were different because Covid-19 had stopped the artist and the sitter coming together, so Zoom meetings were organised and artists had to sketch or paint the other person in their restricted time slot, which, when you see the finished work, is very impressive.

In another corner was a splendid array of self-portraits; again the result of not being able to have models coming to the studio.

There is a marvellous plasticine self-portrait bust, and a large jigsaw, lovingly made for an unwell parent.

Plus, ‘Lockdown Softing’, a quite mature installation of home-made soft toys by Woody Gray from Rotherhithe, who was there ensuring his piece was presented properly in its glass case.

After the young creative had decided on the order of ‘Mr Snookles from Trolls, a Minion and a Peekachoo’, he stood back

to admire his work and regaled us with the tale of how a prototype Santa didn’t make the cut after ‘his eye fell off’.

Asking him for a quote he exclaimed, ‘A pair of my underpants was used to make Mr Snookles!’ The mind boggles.

On the upside it is a joy to see the young being so creative with fabric fragments.

The Art of Isolation is on at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre (Upstairs by Burger King) from 18th July - 1st August.

was taken before she revealed how the new business offered other benefits: ‘Not just freedom from an office and desk, but being creative, getting out in the community…’

The new venture boomed but then the virus came and its impact was immediate.

‘As my fledgling business started taking off the pandemic hit and I was forced to delay all my shoots.’ The lockdown was a low point for Irma. ‘With no immediate understanding of when I would finally be able to get back to the up close and personal style of photography I love so much, it was really hard to take.’

Her last family shots were in March before all others were postponed. Irma was missing her work and missing meeting new people. The frustration of the situation inspired her to start her ‘Life in Lockdown’ portrait project. ‘I have photographed over 80 families since lockdown began,’ she tells me with new enthusiasm. ‘All of them for free - at their front doors their windows or on their

balconies - and I hope my visit to take their picture will give each of my contributors a positive experience as a family during this stressful time, as well as a memory to treasure and look back upon.’

Irma took a breath. Smiled. ‘I like to think I’ve turned a bad situation into something much more positive; my Life in Lockdown response to Covid-19 has perhaps been the single biggest thrill for me so far.’

She is currently waiting to see how the lockdown guidelines evolve and when it will be safe for her to return to her usual photoshoots. However, she feels that being able to continue doing what she loves has been a boon for her and for all those families that smiled at her camera.

Life in Lockdown reinvigorates photographer Irma Arrowsmith’s journey from a small town in the Netherlands to England was punctuated with stops in Australia, Argentina, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Sri Lanka, where she would live and work and fulfil her fascination for different peoples and cultures. But then she met her husband in London where they settled in East Dulwich and the next stage of her journey began, writes Michael Holland.

‘I’ve always loved photography, says Irma, ‘but never really took the final step to turn professional. Then, after my little girl was born there was an opportunity for me to make a career change…

Becoming a parent opened my eyes to the documentary family photography genre and I realised that was what I wanted to do.’

She explained: ‘I’ve always loved the work of Martin Parr, Steve McCurry, Anton Corbijn and Don McCullin.’ Hence, after a re-evaluation of her work life, Irma

took a course at the London School of Photography.

‘I discovered that there were amazing photographers out there who have elevated this type of photography to an art form, something different and surprising

and much more the style I was interested in aspiring to - people like Kirsten Lewis and Kyla Ewert. I love to find fun, humour and mischief in my photos - The real warts and all approach of getting under the skin and into the lives of my subjects is the perfect combination of art and documentary in my eyes.’

She launched Irma Arrowsmith Photography in September last year and says, ‘It’s all still very new, but every shoot so far has been not only fun but a great chance to learn and to meet lovely new people… Typically I would spend several hours with each family, photographing them at home, in the garden, the park, at play, at meal times and bath time. I like to get close to my subjects, and I find the best images come when they are so comfortable with me being there they forget I even exist… I want to give them a real record of their life as a family: true, unfiltered and genuine - and full of emotion.’ The passion in Irma’s words took centre frame. A towering achievement - photos show Tower Bridge being built

s Tower Bridge opens again - as a tourist attraction we mean - the News looked back in our archives to bring you an unique set of pictures of the bridge being built that were found lying in a skip in 2006.

The catalogue of sepia pictures date back to 1892, and reveal the incredible ingenuity behind one of Southwark’s most notable landmarks.

The photos depicting Tower Bridge’s construction surfaced in the media in 2011. But before that they had been discovered lying in a skip in Westminster in 2006. The Daily Telegraph reported in 2011 that a caretaker, aged 59, had found the photo albums and kept them underneath his bed in a carrier bag for a year.

A City of London Tower Bridge tour guide, Peter Berthoud, who realised the significance of the images, said: “I just couldn’t believe it. I spent hours going through my books to see if these

pictures were already around, but I couldn’t see them anywhere - they are totally unique.”

Laurence Ward, Head of digital services, at the London Metropolitan Services the City of London, said his

company then bought them from a dealer. Mr Ward said they were taken by the construction companies who built them as works commenced in 1887, and took eight years with five major contractors. The resident engineer

for the bridge’s construction was E W Crutwell.

Its foundations were laid by Sir John Jackson, the hydraulics were by Baron Armstrong, with the rest of the assembly taken on by William Webster,

Sir H.H. Bartlett, and Sir William Arrol & Amp Co. Together they employed 432 workers. Two massive piers containing over 70,000 tons of concrete were sunk into the riverbed to support the construction.

Over 11,000 tons of steel provided the framework for the towers and walkways, then clad in Cornish granite and Portland stone. The total cost of construction was £1,184,000 – the equivalent of £122m today.

The bridge was officially opened on June 30, 1894. Mr Ward added: “A few people have said to me while we were completing this project that they didn’t realise how recent the bridge was actually built. It’s a very nice story and something that’s very well recorded.”

Existing car club parking places, disabled persons’ parking places, electric vehicle recharging places and loading bays located in the above streets would not be affected by the proposals.

MILLWALL’S PLAY-OFF hopes ended in a blitz of goals at Queens Park Rangers last Saturday.

Gary Rowett could have emphasised the positives. The Lions were seventeenth when Rowett took over from Neil Harris last October, some fans fearing another relegation battle.

But Rowett was in no mood for a glasshalf-full analysis. You could understand why. On New Year’s Day the Lions went sixth after a 3-1 win at home to Luton.

They had two wins in their next three but then only one in the following eight games. A 3-0 victory at Nottingham Forest reignited top-six hopes but then Covid-19 caused the suspension of football.

Who knows what would have happened without a pandemic to interrupt the season. Millwall were due to play Derby the following week, and have close to a sold-out Den baiting Wayne Rooney.

Instead, more than three months after the win at The City Ground, the Lions lost 3-2, Rooney having a comfortable afternoon.

It was always going to be a remote chance after that to finish sixth. Neil Harris’ Cardiff beat Leeds 2-0 that weekend and immediately looked the favourites to grab a play-off place.

Rowett’s focus instead turned immediately to next season. And reading into his words at Loftus Road, he was throwing down a gauntlet to his players and perhaps the club’s board as the transfer window opens next Monday.

“I could easily stand here and say that we’ve come so far, done so well and are proud of what we’ve achieved. But that’s not me,” Rowett said.

“I don’t want us to play the ‘little old Millwall’ card. We needed to capitalise on the opportunity.

“I’m disappointed. I think when the pressure came on we’ve not managed to step up and handle it very well.”

That opportunity is to continue the good work started by Harris in 2015.

Nine of Saturday’s starters were signed

by Harris with the longer term in mind.

Millwall have extended the deals of Mahlon Romeo, Shaun Hutchinson, Jake Cooper and Shane Ferguson this season.

They have no intention of letting all that building work crumble.

But it’s not hard to analyse what Millwall now need to take them to the next level. The game against QPR was Tom Bradshaw’s 20th without a goal. That’s not to say he should be discarded, but the Lions need more goal contributions from around the team. That’s presuming they’re not in a financial position to go and get a guaranteed-20-goal-a-season striker.

From the five senior central midfielders, there have only been five goals. That goes someway to explaining why before Wednesday’s final day the Lions had drawn more games (17) than any side in the division. Jake Cooper will also surely be disappointed with his attacking contribution.

The 5-2-3 system has worked well and if Rowett continues with that next season then he needs more wing-back options in what is a demanding position.

Then the question – and it’s more relevant given the financial uncertainty around clubs – is can some of the youngsters come through and make an impact.

Billy Mitchell certainly looks like he can. Hayden Muller, an eighteen-yearold centre-back, has been on the bench since the restart. Big things are expected of Abdul Abdulmalik, a pacey seventeenyear-old attacker. It will be interesting to see how much involvement they have in Millwall’s pre-season games.

Millwall have a solid defensive base, despite last Saturday’s capitulation.

There was a rare mistake from Bart Bilakowski who let the second goal through his grasp. He had kept fourteen clean sheets in Rowett’s previous 34 league games.

The Lions went behind when Conor Masterson fired home after Bialkowski had saved Yoann Barbet’s header.

Matt Smith came on for Romeo at the break and scored four minutes later, but then Bialkowski let Ryan Manning’s tame shot in.

Former Millwall youth player Ebere Eze added a third before Shaun Hutchinson gave Millwall hope again when he headed home from Jed Wallace’s corner.

understandably, struggled at right-back.

QPR’s three goals in the second half came down that side.

Dominic Ball crossed for Todd Kane to make it 4-2. Another substitute, Jayson Molumby, grabbed one back with his first goal for the club, but Millwall still needed two more to keep their playoff chances alive. Hutchinson headed home from a free-kick but it was ruled out, wrongly, for offside. Millwall would have had another 30 seconds to go for a winner.

But in this game and since the restart they never looked like they would do enough.

They now have a chance to do something in the closed season to mount another play-off challenge in 2020-21.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BART BIALKOWSKI has been keeping them out of the net all season – but the Lions goalkeeper has a very different plan for his summer break.

The Millwall squad usually have eight weeks off during the closed season but because of football’s suspension in March and the extended campaign, this time they will have only three weeks of holidays.

Bilakowski, who is from Braniewo in northern Poland, intends to make the most of it with his family.

“We’re going to drive back to Poland with stops across Europe. We’re going to stop in Italy, get some sun. It’s going to be a nice break. Something different.

“It’s a new scenario for everyone. You’ve a few weeks break so it’s something. You just need to get on with it, really. You try to get your mind off football for that period of time and make sure you’re ready for the new season.

“I’m just going to forget about football and spend time with family. You cannot get bored with kids, so it’s not going to be hard [to switch off].

“We’ve been waiting for this break.

We had a couple of months off because of coronavirus but it was completely different, you couldn’t do anything.

“I’m going to go back to Poland for a week or two, go on the lake and try some fishing. I’m sure I’m going to enjoy that.

I’ve never been fishing but my wife’s parents have a nice place on the lake. I’ve always wanted to do that but never had the possibility.”

Bialkowski is one of the favourites to net Millwall’s player of the year award in his first season with the club. Before Wednesday’s final round of Championship fixtures, Bialkowski had kept more clean sheets (16) than any other goalkeeper in the top two divisions in England.

Not that he’s going to accept all the praise for himself.

“We’ve been solid as a team defensively since the gaffer came in,” Bialkowski said.

“Obviously it’s nice to keep a clean sheet for the goalie and the defenders, but big credit must go to the whole team. It’s not only me and the defenders, it’s the whole team starting with the strikers and obviously finishing with me.

“I’m not going to take all the credit for myself but obviously it’s nice, the aim is

The Lions just fell short of reeling in the sides above them in the play-off race. Despite that disappointment, for Bialkowski it has been a big change challenging near the top end of the table after relegation with Ipswich the previous season.

It took some time for his move to Millwall to go through, after a failed medical led to renegotiations and initially a loan deal rather than a permanent one.

Bialkowski impressed in the first half of the season and finally signed a long-term contract with the club last January.

“Last year was awful,” Bialkowski admitted. “I needed a change and it’s been a crazy year, to be honest, with medicals and stuff like that. The contract [talks] with Millwall were going on for ages. But finally the move became permanent in January and I showed what I could do.

“They trusted me and still trust me. I trust them and I’m happy to be here. It’s been fantastic here personally after the season we had at Ipswich. It’s been a nice change.”

Bialkowski is now determined to come back next month and help Gary Rowett’s side start the league well to have a shot at hooking a play-off spot.

“We’ve had a good season but just didn’t manage to finish it off in the right way. We wanted to, but in terms of the future it’s massive for the club to have a solid base.

We have experienced players, very good players and honest players. We never give up.

“The gaffer is a winner, he wants to achieve and be a successful manager. And we as players want to achieve great things with Millwall. We want to be successful,

we were so close but so far as well.

“It’s a good base to build on for next year and I’m sure the gaffer is working really hard with the directors to bring quality into the team and have a right good go next year. That’s what we want, we want to be competitive.

“We want to be in the play-offs but it’s such a competitive league. But we showed this year we can compete for that spot and be successful.

“The main thing for us now is to reset, recharge the batteries and go again next year and try to push for the play-offs from the start. That’s the aim for us.”

Aiden O’Brien leaves Millwall with praise from boss

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett admitted it was “tough” to see Aiden O’Brien leave the Lions and again praised the attacker for his attitude.

O’Brien, 26, left Millwall after the last game of the season against Huddersfield on Wednesday.

Ireland international O’Brien said it was with “great sadness” that he is departing after nine campaigns with the Lions.

O’Brien made his debut as a seventeen-year-old in a League Cup game against Wolves in September 2011, and went on to make 226 appearances, scoring 44 goals.

Rowett couldn’t guarantee him regular first-team football.

“It’s tough all round because you’ve

got a player that’s done so well for you and for the club, and what the club means to Aiden,” O’Brien said.

“When he came to me he probably knew he needed to go and play. While you never want to release anyone that’s really important to the club, sometimes you have to do what’s right long-term for everyone.

“I think he needs to play games and he’ll go and score goals somewhere. It was a really difficult one.

“Aiden’s got massive credit. Some people who are told [they are being released] might be entitled to not be as professional, but he’s been absolutely brilliant around the place and it shows what a good character he is and what he thinks about the club.”

O’Brien posted an emotional message on Twitter this week. He said: “As some may be aware, it is now my time to leave Millwall. This brings great

sadness and it is hard for me to take in, especially since I started here at 15.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time, with such a supportive fan base and excellent community right from the beginning. The fans and The Den have been the life of my career, and we have celebrated many times, particularly the club’s promotion.

“I have been able to make the most of so many opportunities and meet some amazing people along the way. The club and the staff have been by my side throughout, and seen me at both my highs and lows.

“I cannot thank you enough for the experience over these past 12 years, they have meant so much to me as a player.

“I hope one day our paths cross again.

The transfer window will be open until October 5, more than three weeks into the 2020-21 season, which is expected to kick off on Saturday, September 12.

Rowett wants to boost his attacking options for the next campaign. Aiden O’Brien has left Millwall and Jiri Skalak is also set to depart.

Jayson Molumby has returned to Brighton after his loan spell. Rowett could also look at his wing-back options as Mahlon Romeo had to play with a groin injury for much of the last part of the season.

“I anticipate the usual scenario where we all want to get things done as quickly as possible, and we all want to know what our squad is as quickly as possible, but the reality is that to get good quality players you have to be a little bit patient,” Rowett said.

“That’s just the fact of transfer life, unfortunately.

“I’d like to get things ticked off as soon as we can but realistically I’m sure most of the deals will go quite close to when we come back and then some into the pre-season period. That’s just

the way it is.”

Two players Millwall want to push through permanent deals for are Mason Bennett and Ryan Woods.

Rowett said: “They’re both players that have done well for us, both in slightly difference scenarios. Mason was unfortunate that he picked up an injury at a poor time in the QPR game, but it’s not too bad.

“But both have done well and both are the types of players we’d like to have here next year. They’re both contracted to other clubs so we’ll have a conversation and see where those end up.”

“A lot of clubs will do something similar, some might have a different approach and give them two weeks off and have five weeks of a pre-season.

“But I feel after the lockdown period when our players trained the whole way through it – there weren’t many days when they weren’t doing anything – they need a mental refresh as well as a physical one and be ready to go again.

“Otherwise you’re essentially saying next year is going to be like a 55-, 60game season including these nine games. That would be a lot for the squad to cope with.”

Since the restart, there is a break midway through each half for players to refuel.

There has been instances of coaches taking a tactics board on to the field to deliver instructions to players.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank is in favour of them, and said that it could offer a commercial opportunity, with TV advertisements during the mid-half interval.

In their first game back against Derby, Millwall twice conceded just after the breaks in each half in their 3-2 defeat.

“I’m not a big fan of it,” Rowett said.

“I think sometimes pre-season it’s a necessary evil when you might be playing in 30 degrees. For the health of the players in those games it’s necessary. But if it’s not extremely hot then I don’t think it’s necessary.

“I think it was designed just to help players cope having to play so many games [in a short time frame]. But a short break of a minute in middle of a half has not really made a lot of difference.

“All it does is give the opportunity to the team that’s ahead to slow down the game and to buy time. From the perspective of winning we’ve done it ourselves. From the perspective of losing it makes it really, really difficult towards the end of the game to chase the game.

“So I’m not a massive advocate of it longer term.”
