Cllr Paul Fleming, who represents Faraday ward on the council, was elected General Secretary of Equity on Thursday.

The union represents actors and those working in the creative arts industries throughout the UK.

Cllr Fleming will take over the role in October, after winning 69 per cent of the vote against rival contender, Simon Curtis.

He said it was an “overwhelming honour” to land the position. “I promise to be radical. I promise to be pragmatic.

I promise to listen,” he told members. “I won’t let you down.”

The outgoing general secretary of the union, Christine Payne, praised the councillor’s “tremendous commitment” to Equity, as she handed over the reins.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Boris Johnson’s claim that Coronavirus ripped through care homes because staff did not follow health and safety guidelines have been slammed by Helen Hayes as ‘utterly indefensible’.

Last week, when asked why 20,000 of the UK’s COVID-19 deaths were among care home residents, Johnson had replied: “We discovered too many care homes didn’t really follow the procedures in the way that they could have.”

The comments caused widespread outcry with the Dulwich and West Norwood MP, who is House of Commons’ co-chair on the adult social care all party parliamentary group, tweeting: “I don’t really have words for how insulting this is to social care staff who have done so much to protect and care for vulnerable people during the coronavirus pandemic but who were hampered at every turn by the government’s failure to provide PPE and testing.”

She added: “Johnson said ‘too many care homes didn’t really follow the procedures in the way that they could have’.

“That has a completely different meaning from ‘care homes did not know the procedures’.

“He tried to blame care workers for his own government’s failures and it is utterly indefensible.”

100 miles around Bermondsey park

josh@southwarknews.co.uk An Elephant and Castle man ran a gruelling 100 miles in under 24 hours in a Bermondsey park last weekend for a social mobility charity.

Friends Will Howe, Max Cotton and Mat Hobbs signed themselves up to run nearly 500 full laps of Bermondsey Spa Gardens from 5pm on Saturday for Football Beyond Borders - the equivalent of almost four marathons in one go.

All money raised is going towards Football Beyond Borders, an education charity working with disadvantaged youth.

Will, a creative director who also ‘climbed’ Everest on his flat stairs during lockdown, managed the full 100 miles, and pals Max and Matt fell just short of the target after becoming injured.

The trio have raised £5,000 for Football Beyond Borders. “Our predictions were way off,” said Max, a 31-year-old personal trainer from Bermondsey.

“I aimed for twenty hours, I thought

it would be enough, but I think I went with that because my mind couldn’t comprehend being out longer than that.

“I ended up going to sleep on the pavement, I was shivering. I was really disappointed, this was about 21 hours in, I only had thirteen miles to go. It’s disappointing but I will do a 100-miler at some point - but I’m never running another mile in Bermondsey Spa Gardens!”

While Max was resting up in bed from the draining ultra-marathon, pal Will was forced to go to hospital with stress fractures after powering on in agony through the race.

Football Beyond Borders, the charity for which the three men were running, uses football to provide inspiration for disadvantaged youngsters in Southwark and further afield.

The charity will be using the money to run a ‘virtual school’, which it has been running from 10.30am to 4pm on platforms such as TikTok to make sure disadvantaged kids don’t fall behind in schooling during lockdown.

“If someone said they didn’t have anything, they just said “that’s fine, thank you and have a good evening.”

Their donations were passed on to Nunhead Knocks’ food bank, where they will help feed people who are shielded from the virus at home or have lost their jobs or are unable to work due to the virus.

And, the response from their community was so positive they are now holding the collection every week.

Hugh, a production editor, was rushed to hospital last year with a five centimetre tumour in his brain.

After surgery at King’s College Hospital, and a further operation for a stem cell transplant, the cancer went into remission.

Now the 50-year-old hopes his ‘Round the Grounds’ cycle tour will help Lymphoma Action, which has suffered a catastrophic fall in funding because of

the coronavirus lockdown.

“I was about to have a big party for my fiftieth, but then I got struck down with lymphoma,” he said.

“I did go to my GP, I was throwing up, I had double vision, but I don’t think it was anything bad.” After a trip to an emergency department after taking a turn for the worse, the Dulwich resident was taken to King’s College for surgery to remove the tumour.

“I had a hemorrhage, there was pressure in my brain from the tumour growth, but luckily I guess that was a sign that something wasn’t right.

“That was last August. It’s been a difficult time, and I’ve been in and out of hospital with the chemo and stem cell transplant.

“Now I’m focussing on just building my strength back up. This sort of journey is now coming to n end.”

Hugh chose a bike ride around south London footie stadiums with friends

after passing several of them during lockdown cycles.

The ride begins from Crystal Palace’s Selhurst Park - Hugh is a Crystal Palace fan - and includes Millwall, Wimbledon, Brentford, and Charlton Athletic’s grounds.

Double stabbing on SE16 estate

By Kit Heren news@southwarknews.co.uk Two men have been rushed to hospital after being stabbed in a fight on a Rotherhithe estate.

Police were called to the scene on Alpine Road on the Silwood Estate at around 6pm on Tuesday night, along with ambulance workers.

Neither man’s life is believed to be in danger.

A Met police spokesperson said: “Police were called at approximately 17:50hrs on Tuesday, 14 July following a fight in Alpine Road, SE16.

“London Ambulance Service attended the scene and two men – believed aged in their late teens/ early 20s – were taken to hospital suffering stab injuries.

“Neither man’s condition is being treated as life threatening.

“Enquiries into the circumstances remain ongoing.”

Donnell, aged 18, was found stabbed on Kingswood Estate’s Seeley Drive on Wednesday, July 8.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sean Robinson, 25, was charged with his murder on Monday.

Robinson, of Newlands Park, Penge, appeared by videolink at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Eren Inniss, 26, of Turpington Lane, Bromley, was also charged with murder on Sunday, and appeared before Bromley Magistrates on Monday.

He is next due to appear at the Old Bailey.

New map to show best local walks

news@southwarknews.co.uk Campaigners have developed a new online map to show Londoners the fastest and most pleasant ways to walk through the capital, with the aim of getting people healthier and more active amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The map, built by the London Living Streets group, aims to be both practical and show off London’s best side. Emma Griffin and David Harrison from London Living Streets said in a statement that “the map connects London’s mainline train stations, popular destinations and green spaces with the city’s most welcoming, appealing and accessible streets.

“This is about getting people from A to B, but in the most enjoyable and healthy way possible. For journeys under 30 minutes, the walking journey is just a few minutes longer, or about the same time, as a journey on a train or taxi.”

Two men, aged 22 and 18, passengers inside the taxi on Southwark Park Road, were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

The pair remained in custody as the News went to press on Wednesday.

The Met’s DC Rob Smith said the weapon, which has been deactivated and sent off for testing by cops, could have easily gone on to kill someone.

“As a result of this investigation, a dangerous weapon has been taken off the streets. This weapon could have easily gone on to seriously injure, or even kill, somebody,” he said.

“Firearms have absolutely no place on our streets and their removal makes London a safer place for all.

“I want the public to be reassured that even during these challenging times, the Met remains committed to tackling violent crime and seizing weapons such as this one.

“We will continue to crackdown on criminals and bring them to justice.”

Cops from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command are continuing to investigate.

Ms Griffin and Mr Harrison said: “Walking more and further is critical to tackle our health, pollution and climate crises. It is also critical to avoid contagion and relieve pressure on roads and public transport as we recover from the coronavirus pandemic...

“A 20-minute walk burns 80 calories, adds 2,400 steps to the pedometer, clears the mind, promotes creative thoughts, reduces depression, helps digestion, lowers blood pressure and generally makes us feel fantastic.”

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Balconies on several flats in a block in Camberwell New Road were damaged by a blaze on Tuesday morning.

Plumes of smoke could be seen from the flat’s balcony, above the Tesco on the road, next door to the Camberwell Bus Garage at around 8.30am.

No-one was reported injured in the fire, the cause of which is under investigation by the Fire Brigade.

A balcony on the first floor was destroyed, with balconies on the second and third floors also damaged.

Brigade officials say they took eight calls about the fire, and managed to get it under control shortly after 9am.

One witness said: “Building on fire Camberwell New Road, just north of Denmark Hill. Putrid smoke. Fire brigade just arrived. Avoid the area.”

Fire crews from Peckham and Brixton fire stations attended the scene.

Peckham man guilty of stabbing pregnant ex

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Peckham man has been convicted of the murder of Kelly-Mary Fauvrelle and the manslaughter of her baby son.

Ms Fauvrelle was eight months pregnant when she was stabbed 21 times by Aaron McKenzie in June last year in Thornton Heath.

Baby Riley, who was delivered at the scene of the murder, tragically died just days later.

McKenzie, of Peckham Park Road, was convicted at the Old Bailey on Friday for murder, manslaughter, and possession of an offensive weapon.

The 26-year-old will be sentenced this Friday, July 17.

Jurors heard distressing details of how the motherto-be was found dying in her bedroom by her sister Melissa, where a cot was set-up for Riley, after she heard screams. Relatives had been sleeping upstairs.

Family did not see the suspect enter or leave the property, and there was no sign of forced entry.

McKenzie is guilty of murdering Kelly, and of the manslaughter of baby Riley Detectives believe McKenzie gained entry through the patio doors. CCTV footage uncovered by police showed

a man, thought to be the killer, in Thornton Heath’s Raymead Avenue both before and after the horrifying attack. This showed him walking towards Kelly’s house at 3.15am on the day of the murder and running in the opposite direction around ten minutes later.

Following the murder on June 29, 2019, the court heard how McKenzie sickeningly played the victim, telling police he had nothing to do with the attack.

He went to the hospital where medics were fighting to save baby Riley’s life, and even joined Kelly’s family as they mourned.

The court heard that just five hours after the attack, McKenzie was having a driving lesson, acting “completely normal” according to his instructor.

Initially treated as a witness, McKenzie became a suspect and was arrested on July 11.

Police say he admitted to being responsible for the deaths, telling them: “No one else was involved in this.

There was no reason for it other than my faults”.

But despite his admission to cops, McKenzie pleaded not guilty to all charges, saying he was under pressure when he committed the offences.

He also gave police the name of another man he claimed was responsible for Kelly’s murder – for which police say no evidence supports.

The Met’s DCI Mick Norman said the horrific case had been heart-breaking for Kelly’s family and the officers who have grown close to them.

“The agonising loss of such a young woman and her child at a time when they were eagerly awaiting Riley’s birth and looking forward to a happy future is beyond imagining,” he said.

“Despite the evidence against him, McKenzie has subjected Kelly and Riley’s family to the trauma of a trial.

“The theft of Kelly and Riley’s happy futures is something that will haunt those who loved her forever and I sincerely hope that Aaron McKenzie is similarly affected as he faces his future incarcerated.”

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The Bermondsey Beer Mile could face closures if it is not pedestrianised during the weekend, one of its top breweries has warned.

Hawkes Cidery on Druid Street is calling for the road to be made car-free on Saturdays during hours of operation to help with social distancing.

Its founder, Simon Wright, said the Mile needed to be pedestrianised to help with social distancing requirements.

Normal capacity has reduced substantially as a result of the need to prevent coronavirus.

“We’re at least at half capacity of what we can do normally,” said Mr Wright. “Businesses can’t survive on fifty per cent capacity. Unless we have this, it will make it very difficult to make ends meet, a lot of businesses will go to the wall.”

Mr Wright is calling on the council to ban cars from using Druid St during Saturday, which is the main trading day for tap-rooms on the strip.

He pointed to examples of Westminster Council pedestrianising parts of Soho to allow restaurants and bars to have ‘al-fresco’ eating and drinking.

But seeking to allay concerns from residents, some

of whom will live on nearby council estates, Mr Wright said a car-free mile would allow breweries to more closely control the numbers of people drinking outside.

“There’s been a big thing about take-away pints, and having them wherever,” he said. But having tables out on the road would mean “we can control the flow of people better. There’s also a safety concern at the moment, with cars going up and down and pedestrians going into the road. We’re only talking twelve to eight, it’s not a late night thing.

We just feel it’s the safest solution for everybody.”

Mr Wright’s call comes after another Bermondsey Beer Mile business, Affinity, urged its fellow businesses not to open to the public over social distancing fears.

“We know that a huge percentage of people who drink in the breweries in Bermondsey are not from the local area,” said Affinity co-founder Ben Duckworth.

“This is not your local pub with people who haven’t seen each other for ages and are meeting for a socially distanced pint; this is encouraging people to travel from miles away to congregate in enclosed, unprepared spaces.”

By Kit Heren news@southwarknews.co.uk The owner of a popular Peckham nightclub has said it could be put out of business by new road closure rules designed to help people keep to social distancing guidelines.

Ciaran Canavan, who runs Canavan’s Peckham Pool Club on Rye Lane, has said the closure means that the company that delivers his beer cannot get close enough to drop it off. The club makes a large part of its money from beer sales, he added.

Before the coronavirus lockdown forced pubs and clubs to shut in March, the delivery company would take the kegs into the club and install them for Mr Canavan, 54, who said he has a bad back and cannot lift heavy objects.

But Southwark Council closed Rye Lane to traffic in early July “to allow more space for social distancing for shoppers, cyclists and pedestrians,” according to a statement on the council’s website. There are spaces for delivery drivers to drop off goods for retailers on the road, but these are both hundreds of metres away from the club.

The club is almost out of beer, Mr Canavan said and the situation is so desperate he is considering meeting the delivery drivers as close as they can come and rolling the beer down Rye Lane to the club himself, despite his bad back.

The club has been running for around ten years, but Mr Canavan is not even sure if he will be able to afford the rent, which is due later this month. Staff numbers have already been cut by two-thirds, from fifteen to five, since the start of the lockdown.

He said: “I feel very let down, to be honest. The way things are going, I think we’re going to go out of business. It’s almost as if they want to drive the final nail into the club’s coffin. I have rent to pay here and I don’t know if I’ll be able to meet

Mr Canavan said the council did not consult him about the decision to close the road, and more than ten phone calls since about the situation have gone unanswered. It is unclear when Rye Lane will be reopened to traffic. The council statement says the closure “will be reviewed and monitored on a regular basis.”

While his beer deliveries are a major concern, he is also worried about the possible danger the road closures might pose to people who visit the club especially women.

He added: “I’m open until 4am… but people can’t get taxis or Ubers to pick them up when they leave. It used to be, we’d help people into their taxis as they left, we’d make sure they get away safely.

Now we’ve just got to send them walking away in the middle of the night. I’m worried it’s not safe.”

Responses to widespread road closures in Southwark and across London during lockdown have been mixed. Some people like Mr Canavan have worried about the effect on businesses but others have said that they have found the move liberating.

“We have for example installed two new loading bays, on Bournemouth Road and Cerise Road. This means that deliveries can be transported to Rye Lane by trolley during the closure.

“These measures are part of a package of available guidance and advice for businesses to help their customers to visit them safely and to operate as and securely as possible.”

Police appeal to residents on estate after double stabbing

news@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Playhouse is set to reopen in a new permanent, purpose-built location next year.

The theatre will move from its current premises on Newington Causeway to the Uncle building, an exclusive new Elephant and Castle development around half a mile south.

The new venue will seat 300, meaning it is larger than the main theatre in the Newington Causeway building, which has room for 240 people. The overall capacity will be smaller, as the current building has a second, smaller theatre with 120 seats.

But it’s unclear how many people the new theatre will be able to seat under social distancing rules, with the government and venues across the UK still planning how to make theatres “Covid-secure”.

The move to the new building has been partly funded by Unity Trust Bank, which is providing £920,000, while other backers gave more than £2 million between them.

Chris Smyrnios, artistic director and chief executive of Southwark Playhouse, said: “This was an ambitious project for a small organisation like ours. The developers built the shell and core of the theatre but we needed to raise £3m to

“The financial support we received from Unity Trust Bank at the beginning of this project gave confidence to other backers and we were able to reach our target.

Unity’s support unlocked everything for us and helped make this project happen.”

Southwark Playhouse was founded by actress Juliet Alderdice and her husband Tom Wilson, a deputy head teacher, in 1993 to help foster local acting talent and provide a resource for the community.

The theatre puts on several productions a year and runs free charity programmes alongside Southwark Council and local community groups.

said: “Southwark Playhouse shares our values in wanting to make a positive difference to society.Thousands of people in the local area benefit from free arts and culture facilities and we are delighted the charity now has a new home where it can develop and grow.”

Building work on the new venue will finish at the end of July but the theatre will not open until 2021.

Chris Smyrnios said: “The new theatre will provide dedicated space for all of our community groups and will enable us to put on bigger shows.”

Southwark Playhouse’s performance space remains closed, like all indoor theatres, but its bar is open to visitors.

A 30-year-old man has died after a double stabbing on a Kennington estate late Saturday evening.

On Monday, police named the Black Prince Estate murder victim as Jahreau Shepherd.

Next-of-kin have been informed, say police.

Shortly after Mr Shepherd was pronounced dead, another man presented at hospital with stab injuries, thought to have been sustained in the same incident.

The second stab victim, aged 26, was suffering with “non life-threatening” injuries.

The Met’s DCI Dave Whellams urged local people in and around Kennington or the Black Prince Estate, to speak to officers, so justice could be done for the victim’s family.

By Kit Heren news@southwarknews.co.uk June 30 saw the 100th birthday of Bermondsey resident John Cooper, a former toolmaker, RAF engineer, auction house security guard, boxer and marathon runner.

Mr Cooper has lived in Bermondsey all his life, other than war years spent in Croydon and the Middle East with the RAF. He grew up on Abbey Street.

The summer after leaving school aged 14 he was walking by the Thames near Tower Bridge with some friends. Some other children ran up and told them that two boys were struggling in the river. a teenaged Mr Cooper rushed over and pulled both out. One seemed to be fine but the other was unresponsive. Mr Cooper used the now-obsolete Schafer technique to save his life, turning the boy face down and pressing on his back.

Mr Cooper had only learned the technique a few months before at school.

“It was fate,” he said. “I thought he was done for but when I saw everything come up I knew that it had worked.”

The story was covered on the front page of the Mirror and Mr Cooper was given a hero’s reception at Bermondsey Town Hall under a red flag rather than the Union flag, Mr Cooper said - because the mayor at the time was a socialist.

“I didn’t have a clue what any of that meant,” Mr Cooper added. “I just thought I was Jack the Lad!”

At fourteen he saved a boy from drowning in the Thames, then he signed up for RAF in WW2, was a boxer in the Middle East, marathon trainer and a 85 year old security guard He later became an apprentice toolmaker at a cigarette factory in the area. “There were factories on the end of every street in Bermondsey those days,” Mr Cooper said.

When the war started, he and his friends were keen to sign up but wanted to avoid the “horrible business” of fighting in the trenches, Mr Cooper went on. He signed up for the RAF and was posted to Croydon, where he was a mechanic on Spitfires and Hurricanes.

After a while he was transferred to Egypt, and also spent time in Mandatory Palestine, now Israel, and Damascus in Syria.

“We saw lots of action... As soon as you saw those Stukas [a kind of German bomber plane], you ran,” he said.

Always a sports fan, Mr Cooper was the trainer of an RAF boxing team that beat a local outfit in Tel Aviv on Christmas Day. He also played a lot of water polo.

Back in Bermondsey after the war, he married his fiancee, who had waited four years for him, in St James’ Church off Jamaica Road. But tragically she died just two years later from tuberculosis. Mr Cooper later remarried.

He carried on as a toolmaker, first for an early plastic factory before moving onto Peek Freans, where he was a supervisor until 1982, when he took voluntary redundancy.

“In other countries, the engineers are the top. Here it’s the accountants,” he said.

“Somewhere like Germany the engineers

lead the way in what a business makes.

Over here it all comes down to what the accountants make of it.”

He combined his job at the biscuit factory with work as a fitness instructor, and trained around 40 of his colleagues to run marathons. “We used to go all over, we ran three marathons on Snowdon and two

by Windermere.”

His time at the factory came to an end when he was asked to make 50 engineers redundant in 1982. “I told them, ‘you can make that 49 because I’m leaving first’,” he said.

Mr Cooper then became a security guard at Sotheby’s, the fine art auction house, where he crossed paths with several celebrities - often without knowing who

they were.

He said: “A man came in one day and people were sort of pointing him out to me and saying ‘that’s Freddie Mercury!’ I said ‘who’s Freddie Mercury?’ We had all sorts in there - we had the Queen... we had Elle Macpherson.”

Mr Cooper eventually retired in 2005.

“An 85-year-old security guard! Can you imagine?,” he said.

A keen Millwall fan, he only stopped going to the Den a few years ago. He is also an “avid reader” and enjoys puzzles and crosswords in his spare time.

He’s spent most of coronavirus lockdown indoors in his house on Southwark Park Road, the street where he’s lived since just after the war.

“I was going to do laps of my garden, but Captain Sir Tom Moore, got there first!” he joked.

Mr Cooper added: “Lockdown hasn’t been too bad, but I’ve missed the pub [the Ancient Foresters on Southwark Park Road]. I’m going back there tonight for the first time.”

The pub is more important than just a place to relax, he said. Asked for the secret of his longevity, he joked: “Guinness, jellied eels and vinegar!”

Mr Cooper added: “But seriously, I think it’s keeping fit that’s the most important thing. I’ve kept very active all my life.”

Asked if he had ever wanted to move out of Bermondsey, he said: “I thought about it when I was younger. But why would I now? I can walk down the street, buy a paper. People know who I am.”

THE UK Government helped thousands of pubs, restaurants and hairdressers reopen safely on Saturday, July 4, with detailed practical information to help keep staff and customers safe.

The new Covid-19 secure guidance for the hospitality sector and hairdressers meant businesses were able to reopen across England, provided they met key criteria.

UK Government officials have worked alongside over 300 key industry stakeholders and trade unions to develop clear plans in line with scientific advice and public health directions, building on existing guidance published in May. The new guidance

Pubs, restaurants, bars and hairdressers have followed UK Government advice and started to reopen, marking the start of summer. Safety measures to protect staff and customers are in

place, with people asked to be sensible, continue to follow social distancing messages to remain two metres away from other people where possible

sets out a range of measures for pubs and restaurants to become Covid-19 secure, including: n Requiring use of table service where possible

instead of ordering at the bar and assigning a single staff member per table. n Discouraging non-essential trips by staff within venues, such as between the kitchen

and stay close to home to support local business.

Community pub which is making the safety of its customers a top priority CASE STUDY THE DOG AND PARROT A COMMUNITY pub in Nottinghamshire is among many across England that has worked hard to put plans in place to be able to reopen on July 4 after being closed for more than three months.

Kathryn Boam, who owns the The Dog and Parrot Real Ale House in Eastwood with husband David, talked us through the steps they have taken to follow UK Government COVID-19 guidance and ensure staff and customers

are safe when they open their doors. Kathryn said: “We are a community hub in the area and have quite a few older customers that use our pub to maintain their friendship group.

“We are safeguarding them, making sure that social distancing guidelines are in place, and kept to.

“Myself and my husband work full time and we have one person working 29 hours with five others working part-time as and when required.

“We have needed more staff on duty to make sure all the measures are kept to correctly. This is a

higher cost to the business and will be factored into our business model.

“We carried out a full risk assessment of the business and premises, putting safe distancing measures in line with government guidance.”

Measures introduced at the pub include: n Placing hand sanitiser stations at the front and back door, and in all toilets. n Ensuring there is clear signage throughout the pub, and the instructions and rules are clear. n Anyone not following the

instructions, or acting in a manner that is

not safe, will be asked to leave. n Placing social distancing markers on the floor. n Wiping down surfaces with antibacterial spray using disposable cloths. n Providing hand sanitiser for staff. n Implementing table service only, so no one will be walking up to the bar. n Washing glassware after each use and jugs for the ales/ ciders/ lager where possible. n Having a single person responsible for cleaning tables and monitoring the floor and only one person serving behind the bar. n Checking all toilets regularly to ensure customers have hand soap and there are electric hand dryers in all toilets. n Changing opening times to ensure the pub can be deep cleaned regularly.

Kathryn added: “With the help of our staff, we carried out a risk assessment and came up with ideas and plans to ensure we can open safely and be COVID-19 secure.

“We have also been talking to other local landlords, working together to exchange ideas and ensure we are all joined up in our actions.”

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Just weeks after vandals trashed their pitches and caused thousands of pounds worth of damage, Peckham Town FC has been targeted again.

Last week its handmade dugouts, paid for by the team’s subs, were smashed by intruders caught on CCTV. As the News has reported, since lockdown the club has been the victim of a spate of mindless attacks.

“It’s heartbreaking,” said club chair and founder Bryan Hall, in a video message to supporters.

“We put a lot in to this spot, not only for our own benefits but we do it for our community - for you guys that live in the area.”

The club, which has lost revenue during lockdown, has now set up a fundraiser in the hope it can repair damage, beef up security to prevent more attacks, and replace some of the estimated £2,000 worth of revenue lost when the season ended early.

More than £1,300 has been raised so far on their Go Fund Me page.

Sadly, the club is not the only community group in Southwark that has been targeted.

Scouts group Phoenix Explorers told the News their van had been daubed in an ‘amateur’ attempt at spray painting.

The club has now asked Camberwell Arts College if any of its students fancied working their magic.

The developer says it can only progress with the second phase of the park safely while the existing section is cordoned off to the public.

A statement posted online, explained: “We recognise that closing the park is not ideal at this time, so please be aware we have not taken this decision lightly.

“It has always been part of our plan to deliver

the remainder of the park in line with the completion of the third phase of the project, which is currently under construction on New Kent Road, and is due to begin completing at the end of this year.

“In order to achieve this, we now need to commence work on the park.

“We’re aiming to get the work done as quickly as possible so that we can open the new and improved park by the end of this year, as well as a new street – Ash Avenue – which will bring many new retailers and restaurants to the area.”

The temporary meadow on Deacon Street will remain open but those looking for free space will have to travel further afield to either Burgess, Southwark or Kennington Parks.

The full park is due to be completed in 2022.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS trust has appointed a new chief nurse for the first time in more than a decade.

Avey Bhatia is set to replace Dame Eileen Sills after around 15 years as chief nurse at the south London trust, which includes Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals, as well as Evelina children’s hospital.

Ms Bhatia joins from St George’s, where she helped lead the trust’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ian Abbs, chief executive of Guy’s and St Thomas’, says: “I am delighted to welcome Avey as the new Chief Nurse at Guy’s and St Thomas’. She was the outstanding candidate in a very strong field.

Council buys 280 homes on regenerated Aylesbury

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk All 581 homes on the first development site of the Aylesbury Estate will now be social housing after a deal was struck between Southwark Council and Notting Hill Genesis.

In a huge financial commitment Tooley Street has offered to stump up to £193 million to buy an extra 280 homes that would have been privately sold or put up at intermediate rent to boost its social housing stock.

The landmark agreement covers all of the regeneration sites known as ‘package A’ and ‘package B’ and will increase the overall number of social rent homes across the entire regenerated estate by a further 219; to 614 in total.

Work began on the ‘package A’ site in March last year and is due to be completed in 2021. The extra council homes that will now be included on the site are made up of 229 on ‘package A’ and 252 in ‘package b’ - where construction is due to begin

later this year.

The third phase of development ‘package c’ - is remaining a Notting Hill Genesis scheme with mixed tenure.

Formal papers submitted to Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, where the decision was ratified, explained: “There are over 600 households in shared accommodation and nearly 3,000 households in temporary accommodation in the borough.

“Pressure on the council’s homelessness services is relentless and in April alone we have ensured 221 people have been able to move inside from living on the streets.

“There is general agreement that we cannot return to business as usual when this pandemic is over.”

The council has been aided by the government’s decision to raise the borrowing cap for home building and further grant funding from City Hall - key issues Labour had long campaigned for.

There has also been sustained support from local Labour councillors in Faraday ward who lobbied hard to secure commitments for no net loss of council homes on the footprint of the mid-

Building a new stadium on Green Dale Fields is not in the best interests of the club, as it has signed up to many expensive conditions to get Sport England backing. These include £25,000 pa to be spent on maintenance of the stadium, and putting £18,000pa into a sinking fund for renewals when required.

Other liabilities have to be covered, including labour costs for its untried experimental canvass curtains.

Solid walls and fences are banned, but the FA insistsgrounds must not be open.

Altogether, the club must find almost £50,000 a year before a player is paid.

The club doesn't have that amount of dosh. Far better to remain where we are and to reopen the five-a-side pitches, which brought in some £3,000 to £4,000 a week over 50 weeks a year. That would raise about £150,000pa to pay for improvements to our larger current ground.

This has fuelled a great surge in community use of the fields and long-neglected Astroturf.

Children of all ages, dog walkers and community sports teams have flocked to the space, creating a vibrant resource for the community that has no parallel in the high-density neighbourhood or in local parks.

The transformation has swept away claims by Meadow Partners and Dulwich Hamlet FC that the space is under-used and unsuitable.They used it to persuade everyone why

they should be allowed to build a stadium there.

Meadow’s proposed replacement, a sports area within the grounds of its housing development, is much smaller and would have to be booked in advance. No substitute for the spontaneously used and equitably accessed space Green Dale has become.

On a recent weekend, a King’s College Hospital cricket team was playing a match in one corner while local boys kicked a football around, kids learned to ride bikes, older residents walked their dogs and families picnicked in the neighbouring field.

“The Astroturf is a space for adventure and the local community,” says Jeremy, a local special educational needs worker, who takes young people there regularly. “It is an essential space for the kids I work with who live in the estates nearby and don’t have gardens.”

Ruskin Park isn’t far away, but it’s no replacement – it’s too far for the local pre-teen kids to go after school, and doesn’t work for the amateur sports folk.Green Dale has become a focus of the community and families in this area – and emotions at losing it range from sorrow to anger.

It is a valuable spot for nature. With its mosaic of different habitats, it offers a refuge for wildlife in the city unharmed by the pesticides and herbicides of the countryside.

There are meadow areas, scrubland, mature trees and an old tennis court that’s being colonised by an unusual mixture of plants. The tarmac acts as

a heat island where insects can warm themselves up when temperatures drop.

In the summer the area is alive with butterflies, bees and grasshoppers.

Meadow ants have built hills and moths and bats forage at night uninterrupted by artificial lights.

The wealth of insects has attracted birds to the area, many of which have been in serious decline in the UK. A pair of whitethroats migrating from Africa have nested and green woodpeckers, whose favourite food is ants, are

often to be heard as well as greenfinches, mistle and song thrushes, blackcaps and chiffchaffs.

The protective bramble patches make it a safe place for hedgehogs, who have been detected on site, to hibernate or to bring up their young. The brambles also provide bumper crops of blackberries for birds and people alike.

Noise, lights and encroachment will inevitably have a detrimental effect on the wildlife and the tranquillity of the space.

The museum, in the grounds of St Thomas’ Hospital, had been at risk of permanent closure during lockdown, because nearly 100 per cent of its funding disappeared overnight.

But now the venue says it will reopen from August 1, and continue with a major exhibition dedicated to the ‘Lady of the Lamp’.

While still being at risk, opening is a step in the right direction, said its director David Green.

Visitors will have to book in advance and the museum will only be open four days a week until November.

“We are calling on visitors from London and across the UK to come and learn all about the woman whose

From July 4, the majority of playgrounds and sports courts were opened across Southwark, with the government giving outdoor gyms the go-ahead from Monday.

The council is urging users to wash their hands, avoid anywhere that looks too busy, and maintain social distancing.

Anyone with symptoms of COVID-19 can now book a test - a facility the council is keen people use.

We know many families will be excited to see their local playground reopen, but it’s still really important that we all keep our distance from others. It is important that anyone using our playgrounds makes sure that they and their children wash their hands and stick to government guidance.

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A mobile cancer centre has been set up at the Old Kent Road Tesco to minimise patients’ risk of catching coronavirus.

The centres are for essential tests close to where the patients live, taken 48 hours before lifesaving chemotherapy.

The tests take place in a St John Ambulance in car-parks, with one currently located at the Tesco superstore in Dunton Road, Bermondsey.

By bringing the treatment centre closer to patients, doctors hope to minimise the travel they have to make, and limit potential exposure to coronavirus.

“Some cancer patients are at particular risk of COVID-19 and other infections due to a compromised immune system following treatment and chemotherapy,” said Dr Catherine Oakley of Guy’s Cancer Centre.

“If there is anything we can do to minimise potential exposure to the disease by reducing the number of trips patients have to make to the cancer centre, on public transport, that has to be a good thing.”

The mobile centres, which are also based in Clapham and Beckenham, have seen 500 patients since being launched at the end of April.

St John Ambulance volunteer, Toni Whiteing, helps coordinate the service. “For our volunteers, being part of this in their local community is hugely rewarding; we feel incredibly proud to be involved in supporting these patients at a time when they may be feeling vulnerable, especially due to COVID-19,” she said.

Blood tests are needed before starting chemotherapy, to make sure there are no liver and kidney problems, and blood count levels are the right levels for treatment.

A London South Bank University student from Brixton has won a design award for her pollution filtering bicycle wheel caps.

Kristen Tapping took away the 2020 Design Innovation in Plastics award with her ‘Rolloe - Roll Off Emissions wheel’, beating more than 100 other entries from across the UK and Ireland.

Kristen said: “Cycling through London, I was able to see and smell the pollution coming from tyres and tailpipes.

I thought - why not use the movement from vehicles to filter the air? If it seems the product has a future, I may try to develop it to a commercial level.”

Rayelle Al-Mashgari, whose father’s family are Yemeni and still living in the country, is raising money to cover the cost of food, clean water and basic medical aid.

During the last five years of war with Saudi Arabia the country has suffered a continuing cholera epidemic, famine, flooding and now Coronavirus.

According to UNICEF eighty per cent of the country’s population - some 24 million - are in dire need of

50,000 books to children’s homes For three weeks throughout June and July three south-east London bookshops collected unwanted and ‘gently used’ books from customers to give to children without.

Dulwich Books, Moon Lane Books in Forest Hill and Tales on Moon Lane all took part in the initiative, from the Children’s Book Project’s aim to put more than 50,000 books into children’s homes during the COVID crisis. Every book will now be cleaned before being taken to one of fifty primary schools taking part.

Liberty Venn, who founded the Children’s Book Project said: “We are so grateful to these ten amazing bookshops that have so readily offered

to help address book poverty at a time when they have had to work so hard in preparation for re-opening. It says a great deal about their commitment to their communities, as well as to helping every child to discover a great book.”

every little helps A charity helping Tower Bridge Care Home residents has been given £500 from Tesco.

Independent charity Friends of One Tower Bridge will use the funding to buy toiletries including shower and bath gels and hair brushes for residents to help brighten up their days.

The charity’s secretary, Nichole Wheaton, said: “The residents feel really cared for and appreciate the help and support from Tesco during this strange time.

“Sometimes we find that residents do not have the confidence to come out of their rooms due to deteriorating health, so anything that we can do to support them is greatly appreciated.”

peckham designer campaigns for increase diversity in fashion A menswear designer from Peckham launched a new campaign to increase diversity in the fashion industry last week.

On Thursday, Peckham-based Daniel Peters launched his new initiative The (Fashion) Minority Report, calling on companies to pledge to increase representation of black and ethnic minorities and women in the industry by five per cent.

Peters, the founder of the brand Your Samples Collective is also calling on leaders to back the Diverse Talent Support Programme to help mentor new talent.

Fashion heavyweights including Fashion Retail Academy’s Principal Lee Lucas, celebrity stylist Nana Acheampong, and Dazed & Confused editor-in-chief Isabella Burley have already given their support.

Research shows women and ethnic minorities continue to be underrepresented in the industry as a whole.

Women hold just 37 per cent of roles and BAME workers account for only eleven per cent of jobs - a figure that would be more like 17.8 per cent if inline with the UK as a whole.

Peters, who has worked at Burberry and the British Fashion Council, wants companies to not only pledge to increase the diversity of their workforce but also make their employment data public and join creative mentorship schemes to drive lasting change.

“For so long credible hires from minority groups have been overlooked,” he said.

“2020 has already been a year of monumental change, but the fashion industry – as ever – is dragging its heels.

“It’s not enough to drip feed diversity, we must join together, take effective public action and provide opportunities for the next generation of talented yet unrepresented professionals to thrive.”

Pulling the plug on furlough scheme is irresponsible I t has been 18 long weeks since we first entered lockdown and I’m sure that many of us were excited that we could finally visit the pub, hairdressers or even have a sit-down meal at a restaurant.

As lockdown measures are easing, I would like to thank Southwark residents for continuing to come together, listen to the guidance and stick with the measures.

Going forward, we must be mindful that Covid-19 remains a very real and urgent threat, particularly to the most vulnerable in our community, and it is our duty as a society to protect them.

It is also important that in the coming months, Southwark residents ‘stay local’ as much as possible. Not only does this ensure that public transport is not overwhelmed, it also means that businesses and high streets in our borough can receive the support that they need in these difficult times.

On this note, we recently heard the Chancellor’s Summer Economic update, which outlined some helpful measures to stimulate youth employment and consumer spending.

However, the Chancellor’s decision to pull the plug on the furlough scheme, come what may, in October and not to extend it for certain sectors is irresponsible.

It is clear that the job retention scheme can’t last forever, but a more nuanced and targeted approach is needed if we are to avoid thousands of further job losses.

Despite all the build-up to his speech, many of the spending commitments we need to see the Government make now in terms of protecting key public services, ensuring our heroic healthcare staff are paid properly and investing in genuinely affordable housing,

I am also concerned that no measures were announced for freelance creatives who have not been able to access specialist Government support schemes.

On top of this, the lack of detail and a concrete timeline surrounding the Government’s, otherwise promising plans, to bailout the arts and culture sector, is also adding to the current climate of frustration and uncertainty.

Last week, it was positive to see City Hall step in and allocate a share of its Culture at Risk Support Fund to ten Southwark-based creative workspaces and artist studios.

This investment has been primarily targeted at businesses and organisations led by women, Londoners from a BAME background and the LGBTQ+ community and people with disabilities. One of the organisations benefitting is Peckham Palms, London’s first space dedicated to Afro-Caribbean hair and beauty.

I visited Peckham Palms when it opened last year and I saw firsthand how vital it is that these enterprises are given the tools to flourish so they can continue to enrich the social fabric of our communities and create job opportunities for the for the next generation of Londoners.

Southwark Angels section in the News every week

L

ockdown may have come to a nearend. But as this week’s paper shows, the lockdown spirit has not.

While we were all confined to our homes, residents from the length and breadth of Southwark took it upon themselves to perform selfless good deeds for the community.

It is why we introduced the Southwark Angels feature in your copy of the News, highlighting acts of everyday heroism which might otherwise go unremarked.

We had only intended for it to be a temporary feature; but we think that our readers’ generosity and kindness deserves to be highlighted week in and week out.

What the Dickens?

Christmas comes early in Elephant & Castle Halloween and Christmas has come early to an Elephant and Castle Poundland this week, as it is selling Christmas wrapping paper in July.

Trick and treat buckets and Halloween costumes are also on offer, despite it being months until the occasion rolls around.

It was spotted by Southwark councillor, Graham Neale. “Is this a record?” he asks.

The store is closing permanently at the end of the month, so the branch is aiming to shift all of its stock beforehand - even if it means selling Christmas crackers five months too soon.

The Chase’s tweed suited Millwall fan contestant

A Bermondsey-based contestant on ITV’s quiz show, The Chase, caused a stir on social media this week, after host Bradley Walsh refused to believe he was a typical Millwall fan.

The reason for Walsh’s disbelief that contestant Joe followed the Lions? The well-spoken Financial Times project manager claimed to go to games dressed in a tartan tie and tweed suit.

“Yeah, typical Millwall fan!” said Walsh. “You look like you’ve spent too much time around Boris Johnson if you don’t mind me saying!”

Sadly, he missed out on the top prize, after getting to the final with a fellow contestant. But it seems Millwall supporters will have forgiven him.

“Oh well Joe, see you down Manzes for some pie and mash before the next home game we’re allowed to go to,” said one viewer.

Big bore Selina comes to finish Super Sewer Residents around Bermondsey Wall East might have noticed an unusual sight on the Thames last week - a giant tunnel boring machine called Selina.

The machine arrived to create the final 5.5km stretch of the Super Sewer project in Chambers Wharf.

She is named after Dr Selina Fox, who founded the Bermondsey Medical Mission in 1904.

Her journey will take her to Abbey Mills pumping station later this year.

ate Re-Opens with a Big, Brash and Brilliant Warhol In the words of one creative genius to another: ‘Andy Warhol looks a scream, hang him on my wall’, which is alright for Bowie to say and put to music, but Tate Modern’s retrospective has more to say about the man behind the art, writes Michael Holland...

The exhibition shows that the shy, young Warhol did not want to be out there taking chances and being seen as a leader, so hid behind the everyday faces and features of American life: Elvis, Monroe, soup cans, Brillo pads and all manner of American consumerism, but at the same time as he hid behind his canvasses and screen prints he was also getting noticed by the millions who had never before had an interest

in art. He brought art to the people.

He called his work Commonism Art and his studio The Factory, from where he mass-produced silkscreen canvasses that went on to become the classic Warhols that his fame was built on.

But this exhibition does much to tell the whole Warhol story so does not merely focus on his artworks. The show includes: the arrivals logbook at

Ellis Island when the family came from Russia, Valerie Solanas’s SCUM Manifesto that called for an end to men and capitalism (She shot and pretty much killed Warhol, although he survived to live a life of ill-health…); several of his 500+ films; books, magazines and just about everything needed to tell the story of a fascinating man.

Of course, it’s not all smiling superstars

in garish colours, because while many will feel Warhol did more than most to embrace, encourage and highlight the LGBT world, there are those who want to analyse history through today’s eyes and mores. Was Warhol using the scene for his own ends? Was it okay to use anonymous people, recruited from bars and bathhouses, having no say how their photographic images were depicted or exhibited after being paid an initial fee? Opinions will differ.

Nevertheless, Andy Warhol the exhibition extols Andy Warhol the artist. It has examples of his best works – some never seen in this country – and of the different media he worked and experimented in.

Not one of the artworks is not eyecatching: The vibrancy burns retinas.

The subject matter time-warps

you back to a time when you were young, so I’m not sure if Warhol has the same magnetism to those who are young now. He is a nostalgia trip back to the 60s, 70s and 80s, which is great for me, but maybe not to those who do not realise how powerful his influence was; those who grew up looking at the artists who inspired.

But that all matters not because while Bowie had music and lyrics to pay his homage, I’ve got words, and I say the Andy Warhol exhibition is big, brash and brilliant.

I just wish I had him hanging on my wall.

Chike prepares for rebirth of ideas after lockdown

Chike Azuonye creates art in his studio in the old Rotherhithe Police Station, that is abstract in nature, with charcoal, watercolour and pastel, but mainly in oils and acrylics, deriving inspiration from his African background and motifs, writes Michael Holland.

Growing up in Nigeria, Chile remembers drawing and painting with pencils and crayons as a child, even sketching his teachers in school.

‘I entered into a painting competition where I painted a cockerel and was the overall winner in my region. This inspired me, and with my family and friends’ support I made a decision to study Fine and Applied Arts at university - It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, as I have been a practising artist ever since.’

That early decision led to Chike having exhibitions at the Commonwealth Institute, the American Embassy, and he says, ‘my work was chosen as Art of

the Month at Iwalewahaus, Bayreuth University in Germany last year.’

The artist is also proud for being elected the Vice President of the Nigeria Art Society UK, of which he was a founding member.

What is it that you love about your work? ‘Being an eclectic artist, I am able to explore several ideas and subjects that I draw and paint. My ideas and subjects cover the richness of nature, still life, found objects,

African folklores and art motifs…

Being eclectic allows me to explore other genres and adapt new ways of working, whilst maintaining my style, or trademark.’

Covid-19 and its repercussions

has given Chike an opportunity for reflection and to try out new ways of approaching his work. He says, ‘This period of crisis has given me the chance to reflect, research and continue exploring and working on pastel, charcoal and watercolour media… Before the arrival of Covid-19 to our shores, I was primarily working with acrylics and oils.’

And Post-Covid Chike is positive: ‘Life will never be normal as we knew it, but will adapt to the change. My life will be much more fulfilling, as the lockdown has made me appreciate people even more and the little things of life… It would be a time of rebirth for new ideas and opportunities for me.’

History

The road of kings, rebellions and the ha’penny bumper

The history of the Old Kent Road As plans are underway to transform Old Kent Road, bringing huge change to the area and starting a new chapter in its famous story, it’s worthwhile looking into its past to see who has graced the historic route from its beginnings.

The road started to take form in the Roman times as a military route, roughly following the route of the Roman’s Watling Street – a route used by soldiers to travel from the Roman ports of Richborough and Dover, and the city of Canterbury to the city of Londinium.

As time went on and the Empire crumbled, pilgrims started to travel along the Old Kent Road to the shrine of former Archbishop Thomas a Becket in Canterbury, often gathering at the Tabard, one of the famous inns of Borough High Street.

A usual first stop for the pilgrims was a stream, Saint Thomas-a-Watering, located by the former Thomas a Becket pub, now a Vietnamese restaurant.

Medieval royalty soon travelled the road, then known as Kinges Street, with the infamous Black Prince and King Henry V returning via the road from their victories in France, with deputations of leading citizens meeting them at the St Thomas-a-Watering.

Come 1660, King Charles II returned for his restoration by landing at Dover and making his way to London, with his cavalcade spreading over the green spaces on the west of the present day Old

Kent Road. Famous rebels also entered London through this route.

In 1381 Wat Tyler, leader of the Peasant’s Revolt, marched his followers from Canterbury to London in opposition to a poll tax, and Jack Cade in 1451 leading his rebellion against King Henry VI. Other rebels such as John Penry, a religious fanatic, was executed at St Thomas-a-Watering on the road in 1593. The location being popular with executions till around 1740.

Until 1750, the old London Bridge was the only crossing of the river in London, leading to travellers coming from Kent Road to the city via Kent Street, which is now known as Tabard Street, and the busy high street of Southwark.

In 1565, Kent Street was paved with

hard stone as far as Stones End near the present flyover. An Act of 1765 saw the Commissioners for Paving, Cleansing and Lighting established for the streets of Southwark, and appointments of Watchmen.

In the 18th century main roads underwent massive improvement with new road building methods introduced by the Turnpike Trusts, an initiative to upkeep sections of roads. Each trust installed tollgates and collected money from road-users for maintenance.

By 1865 tollgates were abolished and the Kent Road was called the Old Kent Road to distinguish it from the New Kent Road.

In the late 18th and early 19th century came the golden-era of coaching. Better

roads meant regular stage-coach services worked reasonably well and there operated a service between the city, the West End, and the villages of Peckham and Camberwell.

From 1784 coaches carrying mail were introduced, sometimes reaching speeds of eleven miles per hour, replacing traditional post boys on horseback.

During the Victorian era of the 19th century, the population of Southwark rapidly grew, replacing fields with streets and housing. The surge of people crowded Borough and the Elephant and Castle, leading to the start of traffic accidents. But despite the prosperity of the Victorian age, poverty affected many residents.

The Old Kent Road slowly stopped

The Old Kent Road saw the first horsetram lines laid in 1871 for a service between Blackheath and Blackfriars Bridge, and in Walworth Road for a service to Camberwell Green.

Till 1913 the ‘ha’penny bumper’, a onehorse single-decker, travelled along from the Old Kent Road via Rotherhithe New Road to Raymouth Road, allowing public transport access to working people. It was during the Victorian era that the Old Kent Road gained the character for which it is fondly thought of today.

Knocked’em in the Old Kent Road was a music hall comedy song written by actor Albert Chevalier in 1891, which told the story of a family who lived in an alley near the Old Kent Road, and is still sang today.

Pub-life was also forged in those times and in 1874 there were eighteen in under two miles.

In 1896 motor cars started to appear on the roads and in 1904 Tilling’s, a bus company, made the decision to switch from horses to motor buses. In the same year, electric trams replaced horse-trams on the Old Kent Road, serving London until July 1952. The Old Kent Road still stands today as an important high street, providing thousands of homes for Southwark and creative spaces for artists.

Boasting a rich history of rebels, kings, pubs and Romans, it is cemented as a piece of London’s history.

The effects of the experimental orders are to introduce prescribed routes/turns which will be physically enforced with traffic signs and any necessary changes to existing highway restrictions to accommodate the segregation of CS7 cycle route in the Southwark Bridge Road area: AMERICA STREET (i) introduces ‘one-way’ north-eastbound operation in the full length of America Street, working with partially segregated mandatory south-westbound contra-flow cycle lanes located on the south-eastern side, (ii) relocates an existing permit holders’ parking place in Controlled Parking Zone ‘C1’ to the north-western side of America Street; BELVEDERE BUILDINGS (i) suspends an existing ‘one-way’ south-eastward operation in part of Belvedere Buildings (between its junctions with King James Street and Southwark Bridge Road) and introduces the prohibition of motorised vehicles except pedal cycles, in that part of Belvedere Buildings, (ii) re-defines and consolidates an existing ‘one-way’ northwestbound operation in part of Belvedere Buildings to include the exception of pedal cycles, and (iii) reinforces the north-westbound ‘one-way’ working (between King James Street and Webber Street) with ‘left turn’ only for all vehicles except pedal cycles in King James Street (at its junction with Belvedere Buildings), and ‘no entry’ from Webber Street into Belvedere Buildings for vehicles, except pedal cycles; DOYCE STREET suspends an existing ‘one-way’ north-westbound operation and introduces the prohibition of motorised vehicles except pedal cycles in the full length of Doyce Street; GREAT GUILDFORD STREET introduces partially segregated north-west and northeastbound mandatory contra-flow cycle lanes between its junctions with Southwark Bridge Road and Copperfield Street on the south-west, west and north-west side; LANT STREET introduces a south-eastbound advisory contra-flow cycle lane between its junctions with Southwark Bridge Road and Sudrey Street on the north-east side; SAWYER STREET introduces partially segregated north-westbound mandatory contra-flow cycle lanes between its junctions with Southwark Bridge Road and Sturge Street on the south-west side; SOUTHWARK BRIDGE ROAD the east side between Southwark Bridge and its junction with Thrale Street, operating hours of an existing southbound bus priority lane are extended to ‘at any time’; SOUTHWARK BRIDGE ROAD the west side between its junctions with Southwark Street and Sumner Street, suspends the use of an existing ‘pay’ bus parking place in Controlled Parking Zone ‘C1’; SOUTHWARK BRIDGE ROAD ‘no entry’ points prohibit vehicles (i) other than pedal-cycles from entering into Lant Street and (ii) other than pedal-cycles using a contra-flow cycle lane, from entering into America Street, Great Guildford Street and Sawyer Street from Southwark Bridge Road; SOUTHWARK BRIDGE ROAD the reinforcement of no access for vehicles except pedal cycles from Southwark Bridge Road: (i) ‘no left turn’ into America Street northbound, (ii) ‘no left turn’ into Doyce Street north-eastbound, (iii) ‘no left turn’ north-eastbound and ‘no right turn’ south-westbound into Great Guildford Street, (iv) ‘no right turn’ north-eastbound and ‘no left turn’ south-westbound into Lant Street, and (v) ‘no left turn’ north-eastbound and ‘no right turn’ south-westbound into Sawyer Street; SOUTHWARK BRIDGE ROAD (i) consolidation of all existing cycles lanes, and (ii) amendment of existing cycle lanes on both sides between its junctions with Borough Road and Sumner Road to accommodate the addition of temporary kerbing providing segregation to sections of the CS7 cycle route; and to add new lengths and amend existing ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions (double yellow lines) to accommodate the above changes in (i) AMERICA STREET, COLLINSON STREET, SCOVELL ROAD (at their junctions with Southwark Bridge Road) and SOUTHWARK BRIDGE ROAD (between its junctions with Borough Road and Sumner Street.

Leonard’s Hull-uva strike clinches points Hull City 0-1 Millwall

MAYBE IT was all that time in lockdown that has Millwall enjoying their trips away so much recently.

This was a fourth consecutive clean sheet on their travels, and the three points was sealed by surely the most spectacular strike of the season.

If this season ends just short of the playoffs then the Lions will wonder what might have been. Ryan Leonard missed a good chunk of the campaign but had he stayed fit then maybe he would have contributed three or four more goals.

He showed at Hull how well he strikes a ball, and he really should score more.

Picking the ball up 30 yards out in line with the left side of the penalty area, Leonard took one touch before arrowing a drive into the top right corner beyond goalkeeper George Long.

Not a bad start after just 90 seconds and Millwall really should have added to their lead and made it more comfortable.

Billy Mitchell, on his full league debut, fired over from the centre of the box.

Mason Bennett saw a shot blocked and Leonard couldn’t tuck home the rebound.

Gary Rowett’s side were so nearly made to regret those misses as a Hull team, despite their confidence in their boots after a miserable season, missed chances and found Alex Pearce and Bart Bialkowski in imperious form.

Substitute Keane Lewis-Potter had the best opportunity late on, but fluffed his lines and scuffed his shot as a grateful Bialkowski grasped the ball into his arms.

Millwall were running out of steam but they just got over the line. When Rowett took over in October they hadn’t won away in the league this season. Now they’ve won seven and go to QPR this Saturday for their last game on their travels in this strangest of seasons.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk TWO YEARS ago Billy Mitchell watched Millwall’s charge towards the top six from the stands and checked other results as they came in on Sky Sports.

At Charlton two weeks ago he was thrust into a box seat. If that 1-0 win over the south London rivals wasn’t exciting enough to be involved in, Mitchell, 19, was told a week later that he was being handed his full league debut.

Rather than being daunted, even in a position he’d never played before, he embraced the challenge as Millwall won 1-0 at Hull.

It’s little surprise he was confident in himself. Roy Keane said once, “fail to prepare, prepare to fail”. Mitchell will never fail to prepare. His thought process during lockdown illustrates that, and indicates a very determined and mature individual.

“I knew it was going to be a congested set of fixtures coming back, very physically demanding for the lads to go every game,” Mitchell told the News this week.

“So I knew that at some point I may be called upon. I wanted to make sure

I was staying as fit as possible during the lockdown so that when we came back I wasn’t trying to make up ground, rather I could hit the ground running and really give the manager something to think about.

“You never know when your opportunity is going to come.

Sometimes you’re waiting on injuries or you’re trying to force your way into the team by doing well in training. This time I knew it was almost guaranteed I would play.

“I wanted to make sure that my team-mates and the staff had as much confidence in me as possible.”

Millwall players used the Strava app as they trained alone during lockdown to record distances and times.

At one point the coaching and fitness staff were surprised to see Mitchell had registered a 15km run.

“Maybe looking back on it it wasn’t the brightest idea,” Mitchell continued. “I had bundles of energy and it was either that or paint or do housework, which I’m not a fan of!

“So I went for a long run and the sports scientist, Bloomy [Laurence Bloom], messaged me just to say be wary of your knees on the concrete. But it worked out okay and we also managed to get some individual sessions done on the grass before the season started.

“I know a lot of the lads were doing street running and timing it on their phones with the app. I don’t think you could fault the effort of anyone in that period. That was why we were frustrated with the results after we came back, we knew how hard everyone had worked. We felt maybe we were going to get off to a better start.

“But it’s a completely different situation to last year. Last year was not the nicest environment to be in. People were probably stressed because we were fighting for our lives.”

Whatever happens this season Mitchell has laid down a marker with his attitude on and off the pitch, and it has been noted by Gary Rowett and his staff.

Playing on the right side of a back five pushing up the pitch has added another string to his bow.

He had big boots to fill at Hull, with the absent Mahlon Romeo enjoying perhaps his best season in a Lions shirt.

“I hadn’t played at right wing-back before,” Mitchell said. “I had played at right-back in the reserves and for the youth teams. I played on the right of midfield at Oxford [in this season’s EFL Cup] as well, so I have experience there.

“I’m a central midfielder by nature but right wing-back has been a good position for me because it allows me to

utilise my energy. I can get up and down the pitch.

“Of course I’ve still got a lot to learn, the coaches have given me some pointers and playing alongside more experienced players helps me along because I’m still learning on the job.

“Mahlon has been fantastic. When we’ve done shape work in training we jump in and out and take turns to play in that position. He’s given me some tips and told me to be brave and confident on the ball.

“If I can play that position as well as Mahlon has this season I’ll certainly be doing something right.”

Duo head out on loan

DANNY MCNAMARA and Isaac Olaofe have joined Scottish side St. Johnstone on season-long loans.

Right-back McNamara, 21, and attacking midfielder Olaofe, 20, link up with former Millwall assistant manager Callum Davidson, who took over the Saints last month.

The Scottish Premiership season starts on August 1.

fourteen of them in 33 games since Rowett replaced Harris in October.

That really has been the main reason the Lions are still in with a chance of finishing in the play-offs, given they are the lowest scorers of the top sixteen teams in the Championship.

For the third time in four games, they needed just one goal for three points. The hosts had surged out of the blocks and went ahead in the 20th minute. Wallace picked out Tom Bradshaw with a low cross, the striker’s mis-hit shot came off Darragh Lenihan and fell to Bennett who tucked home low past goalkeeper Christian Walton.

Rovers responded well in the second half, and Millwall had to put in a Trojan effort.

A trio of Millwall subs, Jayson Molumby, Connor Mahoney and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, hounded Jacob Davenport. In the 94th minute Shaun Hutchinson, who had moved to right-back, strained every muscle of an aching body to prod the ball away and win a free-kick.

It almost all counted for nothing in the seventh and last minute of added-time.

Having worked so hard to deny their opponents space in the box, they left a sliver of it for left-back Joe Rankin-Costello. His low effort looked like it was creeping in, but went just past Bart Bialkowski’s post. The last kick of the game.

Admit it, you’ve done it since the restart.

The first game back was the 3-2 defeat to Derby, when the Lions dropped to eleventh.

Next was the 0-0 draw at Barnsley and then a third game without a win followed, the 1-1 draw at Swansea.

Five points off sixth. Six games left.

Gary Rowett’s side were then nine minutes away from a fourth winless game at Charlton, before Jake Cooper’s late strike.

Two points off sixth. Five games left.

A 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough.

Five points off sixth. Four games left.

Surely that was it? But no, the Lions had consecutive, hard-fought, no-room-for-error 1-0 wins up their sleeve to bring them right back into it with two games left.

The team Neil Harris built are chasing...Neil Harris’ team.

Actually, Mowbray’s exact words before Tuesday night were “underestimate Millwall’s technical footballers at your peril”.

He might have had two players in mind in particular.

To the squad Harris spent four-and-a-bit seasons building, the man who replaced him, Rowett, made two crucial transfer additions in January.

Ryan Woods arrived on loan from Stoke and he was the type of midfielder Millwall didn’t have and someone who could be fundamental to the way Rowett wanted to play.

Woods can be a metronomic passing presence, always available to take the ball and get the side moving forward, or switch the play. He can also forage for possession and his energy levels are high. In the first half on Tuesday night he lost the ball, a rare lapse. He sprinted across the pitch chasing it down, then ran back towards his own goal eventually fouling.

In the second half he made a lung-busting

run to track down the fresh-legged substitute Joe Rothwell, get himself between man and ball and earn his side a free-kick.

The other technical player to arrive in January, with some recent baggage, was Mason Bennett. He has often struggled to get on the pitch but when he does he makes a huge difference, not just with his recent goals.

Bennett said after joining on loan from Derby he wanted to put the drink-driving incident last September behind him, and move on with his career. He is certainly doing that, and his second goal in his last two Den appearances helped his current side move away from the Rams, who are now out of the play-off picture.

Mowbray had also said before kick-off “I’ve always felt that to play for Millwall you have to be a certain type of personality, a certain type of character to live with the scrutiny of their support base.”

There was no scrutiny from fans on Tuesday, but there was no escaping the exacting demands of skipper Alex Pearce.

In an empty stadium it was possible to hear Pearce constantly barking out orders. “Mase, Mase, move, get the ball” he ordered Bennett from a Shane Ferguson throw-in. Ferguson went down the line. Pearce repeated his message and an annoyed-looking Bennett turned around probably putting his case that he had made about four different runs to give Ferguson an option. But from the next throw-in he received the ball to his feet.

Late in the second half an exhausted Jed Wallace had run back 100 yards to cover on the right. With Blackburn in possession Pearce roared at a winded Wallace to press.

Wallace barely had breath to roar back at his captain where he could go. Unrepeatable here, but a four-letter word followed by “off”.

Millwall have the best defensive record outside the top six, with Pearce organising and cajoling and, given every player in the side has a role out of possession, a team rather than just a defence that has kept sixteen league clean sheets this season,

Lions won’t flash cash

Millwall still have PL chance – but won’t gamble future EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL COULD still defy the odds and be in the Premier League next season – but if they do achieve a sensational promotion they won’t go breaking the bank on players.

The Lions have been in the top flight for just two seasons since their formation, 1988-89 and 1989-90, but Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Blackburn Rovers left them just two points off the play-offs with two games left.

Recent history is littered with examples of clubs who were promoted and splashed the cash to try and establish themselves in the Premier League.

Sunderland, to take one example of a club and an unwise financial move that

illustrated their carelessness, saddled themselves with paying Jack Rodwell £60,000 a week even after relegation back to the Championship.

Portsmouth freewheeled down to League Two from the Premier League in just four seasons after spending far beyond their means, enduring administration and points’ deductions along the way.

Lions boss Gary Rowett cited the more prudent example of Sheffield United, who were promoted last year. Chris Wilder added the free-transfer signings of Phil Jagielka, Ravel Morrison and, ironically, Rodwell. The Blades also spent modestly on Championship players Luke Freeman, Ben Osborn and Jack Robinson.

Wilder did recognise the need for more firepower, however, and broke the club’s transfer record first on Lys Mousset

(£10million) and then Oli McBurnie (£20million).

Once their Premier League status was established for at least another season, United broke their transfer record for a third time in six months when they paid £22million for Sander Berge in January.

Even such relatively low figures in terms of Premier League signings seem as if they are in another stratosphere for Millwall, whose record outlay is £1.5million on Ryan Leonard.

Millwall’s recruitment department is currently balancing making plans for next season’s Championship, but there is also the chance that they will have to set their sights on the division above.

“I genuinely don’t think it changes that much,” Rowett said. “I don’t think we’re the type of club that would go and spend £150million on players just to try and

“Whichever way you look at it it’s a long-term build, wherever you are. We’re trying to sign players to get out of the Championship, or, any club in the same position [not knowing which league they will be in the following season] is trying to get players that can keep them in the Premier League, like Sheffield United have done.

“So I don’t think it changes massively.

“What we’ve got to do at the moment is we’re trying to balance off doing the best we can this season and preparing for next season. That’s what you have to do, you’ve got to look at the long term as well as the short term.

“We’re trying our best to do that and when the window opens we’ll see whether that work comes to fruition or not.”

The Lions’ 1-0 win over Blackburn Rovers at The Den on Tuesday was their third in four games after they failed to win any of their first three after the restart.

That lifted them to within two points of Neil Harris’ Cardiff with their remaining two games at QPR this Saturday and home to Huddersfield on July 22.

Mitchell, 19, was yet to sign professional terms when Harris’ side almost made it into the play-offs but fell just short in 2017-18.

“I remember when we came up and did so well in that first season,” Mitchell said.

“I was in the youth team and used to go to the home games with my dad, as long as it fit in with my game schedule. Some of the players had fantastic seasons.

“I remember watching other results come in on Sky Sports and there was that unbelievable unbeaten run. To be part of something like that this season is fantastic.

“The manager [Gary Rowett] said it was like a small tournament after coming back from the lockdown. We didn’t start that well but have picked it up recently.

“We’ve got [two] games now to throw every bit of energy and conviction at it and just hope that we can get as good results as possible. We’re in such a good position and no one wants to let this go to waste. It’s only on us now.”
