Southwark air quality 17% better during lockdown

news@southwarknews.co.uk A new study suggests that the amount of dangerous pollutants in Southwark's air may have dropped by an average of around 17 per cent during the first month of coronavirus lockdown.

Researchers collected the amount of harmful nitrogen dioxide in the air at several roadside points across the borough as London shut down, from March 17-April 14.

The junction of Tooley Street (pictured) and Borough High Street, outside London Bridge station, saw the biggest drop-off - with 33 per cent less nitrogen dioxide in waking hours than between December 2019 and late February this year.

Other sites measured were Geraldine Street, which saw a drop off of more than seventeen per cent, Peckham Road, with around sixteen per cent, Brook Drive with ten per cent and Camberwell Road with about nine per cent.

These figures declined even more between 10pm and 6am, with nitrogen dioxide falling at the Borough High Street site by nearly 40 per cent.

Nitrogen dioxide is released into the air when fossil fuels like petrol and diesel are burned, so busy roads with lots of cars such as Borough High Street are likely to have bad air quality. Car use was down significantly in the early weeks of lockdown, with people told to stay at home as much as possible.

Breathing in pollutants like nitrogen dioxide can have a serious impact on people's health.

the symptoms of those suffering from lung diseases."

The news comes after a survey by Guy's and St Thomas' charity and environmental group Global Action Plan that reports that 77 per cent of Southwark residents agree that air quality was better during lockdown.

Southwark councillor Richard Livingstone, cabinet member for environment, transport and the climate emergency, said: “It’s great to see further confirmation that the people of Southwark are right behind us in making cleaner, quieter and safer streets a priority. Almost 4,000 people have already shared their ideas about how we can improve our streets and we are busy

working to make many of these suggestions a reality.

Air pollution monitoring project Breathe London and Environmental Defence Fund Europe (EDFE), which recorded and analysed the air quality data, found that more than 40 per cent of nitrogen oxides in Borough High Street were caused by businesses.

This was due to of a range of issues, including delivery vans and lorries driving into the area, they said.

Global Action Plan and Guy’s and St Thomas’ have offered advice to help businesses in the borough reduce their impact on local air quality as the UK emerges from coronavirus lockdown.

Chris Large, chief executive of Global Action Plan, said: “These findings are clear: air pollution clears up rapidly when we stop driving polluting vehicles. Children in some London boroughs average ten per cent smaller lungs than the UK average, and this stunting stays for life. Businesses can end this disadvantage to London’s inner-city children by committing to tackling air pollution.”

Elizabeth Fonseca, an air quality manager at EDFE, added: “By looking closer at which activities are producing the pollution, we can drive targeted solutions to clean the air.

If businesses step up and reduce their own pollution emissions, it could go a long way toward creating a healthier London.”

Kate Langford, director of Guy’s and St Thomas’ programme on the health effects of air pollution, said: “We know that air pollution disproportionately impacts some people’s health more than others, including children and people with long-term conditions. There is also emerging evidence that COVID-19 leads to long-term lung damage and the groups disproportionality impacted by the virus are likely to be affected by air pollution as their lungs recover.

Southwark Council has redesigned several roads across the borough in coronavirus lockdown to encourage people to walk and cycle in the borough, which could help reduce air pollution.

The Department for Transport has given one million in funding to Network Rail to move ahead with plans to redevelop Peckham Rye Station.

Currently the Rye Lane station is the busiest in the country without step-free access for buggies, wheelchairs, or travellers with heavy cases and lacks disabled toilets.

Network Rail's lead development manager, Andrew Wood, said: "Passenger numbers today have outgrown the original design,

platforms and passageways being too narrow, leading to overcrowding at peak times.

"We want to make the station accessible to all passengers, improve the overall journey experience, make the station safer and provide capacity for long-term growth.

"We are committed to working closely with train operators, rail passengers, Southwark Council, the Arch Company and the local community to take these proposals forward.

"Over the next fifteen months we will be holding online workshops to involve interested parties in crafting the designs."

Meet the entrepreneurial teen brothers

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A thriving new bike repair company in Bermondsey with a clutch of five star reviews has been set up by two enterprising teenage brothers.

Bike-mad Denney O’Connell, 15, and younger brother Frankie, 14, set up Boys on Bikes, or BOB for short, from their family home in Jamaica Road.

They asked elder sister Sydney, aged seventeen, for a loan to cover the startup costs and since then have received glowing testimonials from happy customers praising their work and professionalism.

“They both wanted to earn their own money, doing something that would benefit the local area and something that they enjoy,” says Sydney.

“Both boys really enjoy fixing bikes, so asked me to buy them the necessary things to start up their company.

“Our customers can come to us or the boys will go to them.

They have had a great response from all of their customers, and some really

lovely reviews on their website.”

The boys, who are both Millwall fans, picked up their skills through seven years at Peckham BMX and spending their own time fixing up bicycles.

One reviewer, writing under the name Will G, said: “I punctured my back wheel this morning riding back from town, I called Boys on Bikes and immediately was told this would not be a problem and could be fixed quickly.

“I thought maybe a day or two? Within fifteen minutes of delivering the wheel to BOB, I was notified that the wheel was fixed and that I could come and pick it up. I would highly recommend BOB due to the customer service, work efficiency and price.”

It looks like BOB is just the start for the ambitious duo. Denney, who plays for Roca Juniors, dreams of becoming a goalkeeper for Millwall and Frankie is developing an interest in gaming and computer graphics.

court hears ‘jealous’ ex took driving lesson, hours after allegedly killing the pregnant mother of his unborn baby By court reporter

news@southwarknews.co.uk A “jealous” ex-boyfriend took a driving lesson hours after he killed his heavily pregnant partner as she slept in bed, a court heard.

Peckham's Aaron McKenzie, 26, allegedly broke into Kelly Fauvrelle’s bedroom in the dead of night last year and stabbed her 21 times, causing catastrophic injuries.

Their son, Riley, was delivered by caesarean section at the scene in Thornton Heath but died in hospital four days later.

The Old Bailey heard emergency services were called to Ms Fauvrelle’s family home shortly after 3.15am on June 29 when the victim’s sister, Melissa, heard screaming from within the property.

Around five hours later, suspect McKenzie – whose relationship with the victim ended in February – was having a driving lesson.

A juror in the Court One murder trial has been discharged after coming down with a suspected case of Covid-19.

The trial of Aaron McKenzie was entering its second week when one of the jurors became sick. On Monday, Judge Mark Lucraft QC told the remaining eleven jurors: “I’m sorry you have had a slight delay, as you know one of your number over the weekend has developed some symptoms which seem to be

at 7am that morning asking if he was still available for the lesson, to which McKenzie replied: “All good.”

The court heard McKenzie was picked up by his driving instructor at 8.30am, whose behaviour was deemed by her to be “completely normal”.

Mr Penny said the instructor later remarked to police how McKenzie “seemed really happy”.

In the wake of the attack, McKenzie pretended to have nothing to do with it, the court heard.

He went to the hospital where medical staff were trying to save the life of his child, “posing as a victim”, Mr Penny said.

The defendant allegedly lied to police and did not tell them that he had spent over an hour before the killing accessing and reading his ex-partner’s emails.

The prosecutor said McKenzie was “desperately jealous” that Ms Fauvrelle was seeing someone new and had “moved on”.

McKenzie denies the murder of 26-yearold Royal Mail worker Ms Fauvrelle, Covid.” He discharged the absent juror, wished him well and said the corner where he had been sitting would be cleaned. The trial then continued with the defendant going into the witness box to give evidence in his defence.

The prosecution allege that McKenzie was “desperately jealous” that Ms Fauvrelle was seeing someone new and had “moved on”. Giving evidence, McKenzie said he had not been happy when they split up, but he denied killing

the manslaughter of baby Riley and possessing a knife.

Earlier, Ms Fauvrelle’s mother Mary Patton described being awoken by screams on the night of the attack, thinking her daughter – 33 weeks pregnant at the time – was giving birth.

In her witness statement to police, she said: “I heard (daughter) Melissa screaming to call the police.

“I thought Kelly was having her baby.

“I saw Kelly had a pregnancy pillow round her neck. Blood was coming from her mouth. I could see she had been stabbed.”

The court heard Ms Patton ran into the garden and began screaming, where she collapsed.

Describing her daughter, Ms Patton said: “Kelly was a cheeky girl who liked teasing us.

“Everything for her was a joke, she never took things too seriously.”

Members of Southwark Pensioners Action Group and the ‘Keep our NHS Public’ campaign held a vigil outside King’s College Hospital and the Maudsley on Sunday to mark the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the NHS.

Over fifty Dorchester Court residents staged a protest outside their letting agents’ offices in Waterloo on Friday demanding a face-to-face meeting with their landlord.

“Clapping was great but it won’t be enough,” a spokesperson said. “We have to fight for our NHS as a public service.”

The pensioners’ group also continues its long-running campaign for a 24 hour walk-in ‘place of sanctuary’ for people in mental health crises.

As the News has reported, the Herne Hill-based tenants have called for rent breaks during the Coronavirus crisis, especially in light of long-running disputes over the privately owned estate’s ‘dilapidated’ infrastructure and hot water and heating outages.

The socially distanced protest was

held by members of the London Renters Union outside Property Partners’ headquarters with chants including: “Property Partners we can’t wait, we want you to negotiate”.

One resident, Jo, said: "I've been quietly putting up with heating outages in my home for years.

“Now a pandemic has hit and it is even more important I have a safe and warm home.

“My landlord is worth more than £200 million but tenants have been told he can't afford to write off any rent arrears accrued during this crisis.

“It feels good to be out protesting to show we don't think this is good enough."

calls for judicial review at canada water The masterplan agreed last year is one of the largest development schemes in local history

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Rotherhithe pensioner has launched a formal legal battle against part of the Canada Water Masterplan over its “irreversible” impact on nature reserves.

Resident Steve Cornish began the legal action after the final stage of planning permission for British Land’s scheme was granted in May. It had been unanimously approved by councillors at a marathon planning meeting last year.

More than 100 residents took part in a photo-call in support of the judicial review on Wednesday, at Russia Dock Woodland Green.

“I am a local resident launching a legal challenge against overdevelopment at Canada Water which will have a negative impact on wildlife habitats

built up over 35 years, home to many rare species,” said Mr Cornish.

“We are about to lose our green backyard!

“I have consulted widely across the community, with local schools and community organisations, visitors from near and far, local residents and the management of the two Local Nature Reserves, who all support this action.”

Shading from a five and six storey block at the plot, which forms part of the southern boundary of Stave Hill and Russia Dock Woodland, would cause a “devastating impact” on wildlife, claimed Mr Cornish.

Part of the playground of nearby Alfred Salter primary school could also be in darkness at certain times of the year if the block goes ahead, he added.

Other objections forming part of the claim include that all 79 flats for the site are social housing - but are also

“segregated” from transport links.

This was challenged at a hearing last year, with planning committee chair, Cllr Martin Seaton, saying: “I went to K1 [the plot] last night, and it’s a wonderful location to live, I would’ve thought.”

Up to £30,000 must be raised for the judicial review to be successful, said Mr Cornish. The Masterplan, one of the largest development schemes in Southwark history, will see the transformation of 55 acres of Rotherhithe in a £3.3bn overhaul lasting more than a decade.

The developer, British Land, has been contacted for comment.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Rotherhithe fitness bootcamp founded in response to violent crime in Stave Hill has urged the government to drop its six-person limit on outdoor groups.

Founder of Bootcamp SE16, Stephanie Jannati, warned the measure stops people enjoying outdoor fitness and self-defence classes – despite pubs now being allowed to open.

Currently, only six people from different households are allowed to meet outdoors with social distancing.

Ms Jannati, who formed the outdoor fitness group over safety fears, said it was important for people to be allowed to exercise in groups, for their physical and mental health.

“You can have thirty people at a wedding, you can have as many people as possible crammed into an aeroplane,” said the mother-of-two.

“But we can’t get out there with a responsible fitness session without quarantining. But the more fitness there is, the more it helps the NHS, obesity is a big risk factor for Covid-19 – it’s important not just for overall health but for mental health as well.”

Bootcamp SE16, which regularly used to practise in Stave Hill and Russia Dock Woodland, has been hit by the condition, which prevents mass gatherings in public – even for exercise.

“It’s had a massive impact on our business,” said the 36-year-old, who has started a petition urging the authorities to relax the condition.

“Not being able to do it outside reduces customers coming into the

business, it reduces our turnover.”

The business-founder said a reasonable condition would be thirty people allowed to gather with social distancing, saying this was the limit for weddings.

“We’re happy with the two-metre social distancing rule, because we have the space, but we need the numbers to increase,” she said.

Her call comes after the head of the Southwark Aquatics Club, based in Seven Islands Leisure Centre, called on the government to allow swimming pools to reopen.

Andy Moore, chairman of the club, said: “It brings me frustration that pubs, cafes, hairdressers and even shops are all open … they’re open and we’re not.”

A Met Police spokesperson said: "On Thursday, 25 June, officers from Rotherhithe local police team

worked with colleagues from North Bermondsey and Surrey Docks to close an address being used as a drugs den in Westlake, SE16.

"Police understand that drug use and dealing can cause misery for local communities and encourage anyone with information to contact police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Police ask: do you know this man?

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Police want to speak to this man in connection with a ‘robbery and kidnap’ at Waterloo Station on Wednesday, July 1.

The victim, a woman in her late

teens, was approached by a man at the station at around 2.30pm, say police.

He initially asked for help, but then followed the woman when she ignored him.

The man grabbed her by the arm, brought the victim to a ticket machine, and forced her to top-up his Oyster card.

He then forced her to board a Jubilee line tube to Westminster, where she was able to alert station staff just before 4pm.

The man then walked away and exited the station. Officers say the man in these pictures may have information which could help them with their enquiries.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A new ‘low emission neighbourhood’ in Walworth to help encourage cycling and social distancing during COVID-19 has divided residents.

As the News reported last week, Southwark Council’s consultation into which temporary measures should be put in place across the borough’s streetscape yielded thousands of suggestions.

The first key changes have now been implemented in Walworth, East Dulwich and Bankside for over a week.

Along with segregated cycling routes and widened pavements, a network of streets have been blocked off or designated for no right turns across Walworth.

But not everyone is buoyed by the decisions - expected to be in effect for at least eighteen months.

Family-run businesses Lynnes Electrical, which supplies NHS equipment, and MCQ Entertainments Limited, have come out against the move saying they are losing customers due to parking restrictions and congestion.

Dighton Court resident Chloe Hill told the News she and her neighbours had no idea about the changes before they happened.

On July 2 she contacted the paper, saying drivers including emergency services had been caught out by the new layout with a police car, ambulance and refuse collection truck all finding themselves stuck.

“Amelia Street was blocked off yesterday using planters, which block the western access in and out of the police yard.

“There was no road signage in the surrounding area yesterday apart from one sign, ‘Road Ahead Closed’, which was on the corner of Amelia Street and Walworth Road.

“It’s impossible to see if you are driving northbound and difficult to see if you are southbound. It actually beggars belief.”

But others have praised the changes saying Southwark Council has shown bravery with the wholesale changes.

Walworth resident Jeremy Leach backed the changes, saying walking was going to be a lifeline for many shops people would otherwise avoid due to pavement crowding.

"As the lockdown eases we are seeing much more through traffic on streets like Browning Street, Wadding Street, Amelia Street, Penrose Street, Manor Place and Penton Place,” he told the News.

“The shops on the Walworth Road have been a lifeline throughout the crisis and local people need to be able to walk to them safely.

“I strongly support the council's plans to make Walworth's streets as safe and as healthy as possible for us all to walk and cycle around our area."

Southwark councillor Richard Livingstone has said the consultation included speaking with police and other emergency services.

Last Friday he tweeted that a traffic

filter would be moved from Manor Place to Kennington Park Road’s junction after listening to concerns

from residents.

This week, Guy’s and St Thomas’ published a letter in support of low

traffic neighbourhoods in Lambeth, saying reducing air pollution and keeping staff walking and cycling to work was a key priority.

On Friday, the council announced that Rye Lane would also now be closed to traffic from Monday, July 6, on a temporary basis. Extra loading bays have been added to Bournemouth and Cerise Roads for traders to trolley to and from their shops.

Allan Dunsmore, from Bikes for London, described it as a ‘Great move’. “Hopefully this will become a permanent closure. Cars, buses, bikes and pedestrians don’t mix well on this street at the best of times,” he said.

Meanwhile, a tweeter writing under the name ‘Mrs G’ said: “This was a pain in the arse today.

“Buses were diverted and the driver didn’t know why neither did they make an announcement. It would’ve been nice to have seen signs.”

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Harriet Harman’s campaign to ban the ‘rough sex defence’ gained unanimous support from MPs this week.

Not a single member of parliament disputed amendment to the Domestic Abuse Bill at its final vote in the House of Commons.

Although this excuse has been used in court for decades, there is a growing trend for killers to be convicted with manslaughter and lesser charges by arguing their partners had died in ‘sex games gone wrong’.

At least 60 women in the UK, since the 1970s, have been killed by partners

who stood in court and claimed their deaths were accidents from violent but consensual sex. Seven killers have successfully used it to receive lighter sentences in the last five years alone.

Many more women have reported rapes or attacks but had their cases stymied after perpetrators claimed they were engaging in willing violence.

The issue had been taken up by Harman and Newbury MP Laura Farris. More than 67,000 had signed a petition in support of the campaign. On Monday, Farris gave a moving speech in the chamber: “The most powerful message of new clause 20 is a tacit one about the dignity of the women who have been killed in this way.

“It is not the perpetrator in the dock who gets to define her, or the judge in his sentencing remarks, but we in parliament who draw a line in the sand and say, in effect, what the victims and their families never could: that she could not consent to that.”

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A man from Catford has been convicted for indecently exposing and touching himself in a string of offences over several months in Brixton.

Fifty-five-year-old Leslie Malcolm admitted eight counts of exposure at Inner London Crown Court last Wednesday, July 1.

All were reported between December 2019 and May of this year within the Brixton area; including inside the tube station and at various bus stops.

The incidents followed a similar pattern with Malcolm approaching women, exposing himself and making eye contact as he touched himself.

Police said Malcolm was arrested at his home address on June 1, telling officers: "You know, it's not like I weren't expecting you."

He is due to be sentenced on September 1.

Detective Sergeant Okikiola Okunola from the roads and transport policing command, said:“I would firstly like to thank each victim for reporting Malcom’s quite frankly disgusting and perverse

behaviour to police.

"Because of them and the support they’ve have shown the investigation, we were able to bring Malcolm to justice.

“Thanks to some of the victims’ evidence as well as the forensic evidence left at one scene by Malcom, he had no choice but to plead guilty to the eight offences.”

Siwan Hayward, TfL’s director of policing, said: “No one should experience unwanted sexual behaviour on our transport network and we are determined to stamp it out.

"We were absolutely disgusted to hear of these incidents in Brixton and commend the victims for their bravery in coming forward to report them.

“We welcome Malcolm’s conviction and hope it sends a strong message that abuse won’t be tolerated.

"All reports of unwanted sexual behaviour are taken extremely seriously and fully investigated, so offenders can be caught and brought to justice.”

Crucial system fighting The NHS Test and Trace service brings together testing, contact tracing and outbreak management into an end-to-end service to stop the spread of the virus and help us move out of lockdown. It is central to the UK Government’s coronavirus recovery strategy and will enable life to return to as close to normal as possible, for as many people as possible, in a way that is safe and protects our NHS and social care.

The primary objective of NHS Test and Trace is to control the rate of reproduction, to reduce the spread of the virus and save lives.

DATA ON positive laboratory tests is fed into the contact tracing system, which automatically contacts people with COVID-19 by text or email and invites them to log into the system and provide a range of information about where they have been and who they have met.

People with confirmed COVID-19 will receive a phone call from a health professional if, for instance, they are unable to use the web-based system, they only have a landline, are under 18 years old or have not responded to emails and texts.

If a person with COVID-19 works in or has visited a venue like a care home, school hospital or prison this can be considered for escalation to a Public Health England (PHE) health protection expert.

Once the person with COVID-19 has inputted the details of their any close recent contacts (or a health professional entering details on their behalf) these contacts would themselves receive a text or email notification, explaining the need to self-isolate and inviting them to use the webbased system to receive further information.

Once contacts log-in, it will provide them with appropriate health advice including what to do if they experience symptoms.

to win war against virus CASE STUDY SARAH HARTLE Sarah Hartle had been studying to become a dental hygienist in Manchester for almost three years and on Monday, March 23 she finally qualified and was preparing to start her new career.

But almost immediately England was in lockdown.

The 34-year-old (below) said: “It was literally a few hours after I had qualified. I had been studying since 2018 and it had all been building to this but now I had nothing, no means of earning plus I had two young children who suddenly weren’t at school.”

“Then I got this email through from the professional dental council, asking for healthcare professionals to join the virtual frontline. I had a look and being an NHS Clinical Contact Caseworker

seemed like the perfect job for me.

“I could choose my hours and work from home – so I could do 8am to noon on weekdays and spend the afternoon helping the children with their school work.

Then I’d be able to put in a couple of eight hour shifts at the weekend.”

Sarah says the work has been rewarding and opened her eyes to how all sorts of people can suffer in isolation.

She said: “One lady said to me: ‘Please can you call me every day because this has made me feel so much better’.

“It is just having someone to listen. I can’t understand what they are going through but I can give them a platform, a place where they can vent their frustration or talk about their anxiety and I can tell them everything they are doing is

okay. So much of it is about reassurance.

“One of my first cases was a poor mum whose family had the virus and she seemed to feel so guilty about it. The whole family tested positive for it – the dad, a toddler and a young baby and she was convinced she had given it to all of them and felt so bad about it.

“She was so emotional and it was one of those where she just needed some support. Her partner couldn’t get out of bed. He was so ill and the whole family was really struggling.

“They were all isolating and she just needed someone to listen to her. I told her of course it was okay that the whole family wasn’t having proper meals – and that just grabbing something to keep them going was just fine during this time.

“So not only am I there to talk symptoms and advice on the medical

side, but also the mental side too – offering emotional support.

“And then there is letting them know about the practical support that is out there too – like whether the council can help with the grocery shop.”

Sarah says there is no typical day as a Clinical Contact Caseworker because no two calls are the same. Some need very little assistance and it can be a very quick call but others need to be handled with a lot of time and care.

She said: “On a busy day I may do eight or nine calls in an eight hour shift. You can be done with taking all the details sometimes but then end up spending an extra half an hour on the phone talking about what they are having for tea! It’s that human interaction that people need when they are suddenly in isolation like this.”

NHS contact tracing went live on May 28.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Super Saturday passed without the expected levels of carnage, hospital admissions or uncontrollable crowds last weekend as Southwark finally celebrated the end of lockdown.

Although gyms and pools remain closed and many people are still working from home, pubs reopened across the borough to delighted punters excited to have their first pint inside in more than 100 days.

Southwark police were out on patrol including checking up on various premises, with borough commander Colin Wingrove saying there were ‘no significant issues reported with general compliance’.

Although some businesses closed early over social distancing fears - and others chose not to re-open at all - problems with crowds were concentrated in Soho and Portobello Road.

More trouble was posed by the continuing unlicensed music events continuing to crop up in blocks and parks around London. Those crowds were, however, dispersed ‘without incident’.

The next challenge is how, as government support winds down, pubs and bars can make a profit trading with social distancing in place and if the ‘track and trace’ plan successfully stops future outbreaks taking hold.

Camberwell Arms’ front of house manager, Milo, told the News the pub was taking a gradual approach.

“We’re all feeling pretty confident about the re-opening. We’re going see how everyone else is doing - how busy they are, if there’s going to be a problem in a couple of weeks, if there’s going to be another spike.

“We’re just going to do us for a bit and then slowly, slowly bring everyone back, in our own time.“ Nag’s Head landlady Julie is cautiously optimistic about the future. “We got the grant from the council, three months rent, which is £18,500,” she said.

“We can only give it until the new year and see what happens - but it was

One of her loyal customers, Nicholas, said nothing beats getting back into his favourite local, describing the so-called 'Independence Day' as 'brilliant’.

“The best compadres I’ve never looked up to are sitting right in front of me. You know, there’s nothing better.

“Everyone’s got to keep safe, looking in the right direction, keep their distance, don’t be kissing and cuddling too many people.

“Apart from that you can see everyone’s got their distance, it is what it is. Everyone’s had a smile on their face all day long.”

Fellow boozer Tony said: “I feel it’s f***ing fantastic, absolutely superb, just to have that little contact again.

“Excuse my language but a little bit of music playing in the background, everyone just singing, it’s nice - you just miss that contact.”

At Herne Hill’s Prince Regent, all tables are more than 1.5 metres apart, with a maximum of six people. Inside, it’s table service only with names and numbers taken for track and trace.

"Thanks so much to all our lovely customers for coming back and supporting us, this weekend," the pub tweeted.

“Thanks for respecting the new guidelines and for being patient while our team got used to new ways of working.

“We really appreciate your support.”

Blazeland Ltd, part of Acorn Property Group, submitted a planning application in May to knock down Harper Road’s The Rising Sun and replace it with a six-storey block of flats and commercial space, designed by Fereday Pollard Architects.

The pub is a thriving business and community centre that has featured in Michael Caine’s Harry Brown and, more recently, an Inbetweeners film.

So far 80 have signed the petition, set up by the Walworth Society this month, calling on Southwark Council’s planning committee to refuse the application and protect the ‘fabulous’ boozer.

The Rising Sun provides a base to many local sports teams including Darts players from across south-east London, and in normal times pre COVID-19 has hosted regular live music events.

Public objections to the development submitted to the council include worries over yet another ‘identikit’ block replacing a good quality, heritage asset,

light being blocked from neighbouring properties, and community space being lost without any replacement - all with a carbon footprint.

One objector wrote: “On Sundays, the Rising Sun is the only pub in the area where the elderly can look forward to entertainment from a three-piece band which the pub provide, and the customers - I'm talking immaculately dressed pensioners - can actually join in singing and dancing to 'old-time' music.

“The patronage by these people has been established over 40 years… the public house is frequented by a regular who is 98 years old and for all her adult life there has been a public house on this site. In fact she even met her husband in this venue.” Another described the plans as “pointless destruction” Demolishing the pub would be in breach of the council’s own boroughwide regeneration plan which states that pubs should only be redeveloped if they are no longer commercially viable.

In its application, Blazeland points out the pub is neither grade listed nor in a conservation area. Describing its approach, the design brief explains: “To promote Acorn’s ‘different by design’ ethos, we employ an in-house interiors and design management team to ensure

our primary objective is attained, the creation of attractive and carefully designed spaces that enhance the local environment and the lives of the occupiers.

“We combine the location and opportunities with the fundamental elements of light and space, to enable the design to reveal itself as an

instinctive response to these issues, so that ‘different by design’ becomes a natural evolution rather than a simple application of standard solutions.

“The result is open, airy, contemporary homes, incorporating innovative design with quality, bespoke details that complement their environment and embody sustainable design and

technology.”

Tate Modern director Frances Morris said: “Over the past few months we have been working hard to reschedule upcoming projects with artists, lenders and museum partners around the world, as well as to extend some of those that were due to close this summer, like Kara Walker’s Hyundai Commission and Ed Ruscha’s ARTIST ROOMS display.

Maria Balshaw, director of the wider Tate organisation, said that they would continue to monitor the situation with coronavirus lockdown, and could make further changes to reopening plans.

She added: "We're all looking forward to welcoming visitors back to Tate. Art and culture play vital roles in our lives, and many of us have been craving that irreplaceable feeling of being face-toface with a great work of art."

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Locals who bought vouchers and t-shirts to save their boozer gathered to serenade the pub on Saturday, as it reopened for the first time in months.

The King’s Arms, in Tooley Street, like many pubs was hard-hit by the government enforced shut-down, missing out on big trading events like the London Marathon.

But on Saturday, the day pubs were officially given the go-ahead to reopen, punters gathered outside - to sing a socially distanced rendition of ‘Give a Little Love’.

The pub’s landlady, Tamra Gray, said customers had saved the pub by purchasing vouchers and tee-shirts to give them much-needed cash during lockdown.

“Our regulars and neighbours have been amazingly supportive, coming down every Thursday to dance and clap with us to support the NHS,” she said.

“Sending gifts,cards and buying vouchers and our T-shirt’s through the save pub life scheme.

“We have been blown away by their positivity and love for the pub and couldn’t have got through this without them.”

The gastro-pub landlady said the fate of the boozer had been in jeopardy in March, as it was prevented from opening - meaning it could have gone to the wall without the intervention of regular punters.

The King’s Arms has been open since 2003, and describes itself as a place with an “unpretentious atmosphere” and “diverse and eclectic” customers.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Southwark branch of Pret A Manger is among the thirty shops the chain will close, which could cost more than 1,000 jobs nationwide.

The outlet of the coffee shop on The Cut, between Southwark and Waterloo stations, is among the eleven branches in London set to close.

It comes as the pandemic has sharply hit sales, with the chain saying it needed to reduce staff as footfall is less and more office staff are working from home.

The group’s chief executive, Pano Christou, said: “It’s a sad day for the whole Pret family, and I’m devastated that we will be losing so many employees.

“But we must make these changes to adapt to the new retail environment.”

The chain had closed all shops in March as lockdown was announced.

Since then, it had reopened around 300 of its stores for takeaway.

Emerging young black artist’s work is gaining thousands of fans online as she crowdfunds

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A young black artist who set up a crowdfunder to help cover the cost of a studio has been left ‘completely overwhelmed’ after raising nearly £4,000 from wellwishers.

Rachel Isabel Mukendi (pictured above right), who lives in Lewisham, set up her GoFundMe page in the hope she could have some financial security after graduating while she focuses on her work.

The former Chelsea College of Arts student focuses on mixed media collages, exploring the black female experience and her own identity.

Writing about the inspiration behind her work, Rachel says: “My collages were created to explore the autonomy of black women.

“They were created as a direct response to the lack of representation within the arts. They were created to make you sit still, in moments where you didn’t even know you needed to, to help you breathe, to help you think about everything and nothing at all at the same time.

“I recycle images and piece them together to create a narrative, a dialogue that’s beyond the conversations surrounding the black female

body, the worlds we house inside of ourselves, the things we say out loud.

“Our existence has consistently been politicised.

We are a force of nature and we have endured everything.”

She hopes to raise £20,000 to help replace a broken laptop, set up her own website, rent studio space, buy equipment and cover printing costs.

Those to donate include fans of her work who describe it as ‘strong’, ‘beautiful’ and ‘thought provoking’ with one supporter saying: “Your art is breathtaking; I really believe you should be given the space to pursue it and I hope you meet your goal.

“I've never seen anything quite like your art before, it's really really so beautiful.

“I'm sorry to not be able to donate more, you deserve everything.”

Bright, a music manager, was attacked while filming a drill rap music video with a rapper in February 2019.

He was found in a hotel lobby in Euston Street at 10.45pm, February 18, suffering severe stab wounds.

Despite the efforts of police officers and paramedics he died at the scene forty-five minutes later.

Thirty-one-year-old Tashan Brewster was convicted on Monday, March 9, along with 29-year-old Abdoulie Ceesay (no fixed address).

Both will serve a minimum of 21 years behind bars for the murder.

Thirty-year-old Oliver Petts (also no fixed address) pleaded guilty to manslaughter during the trial and was sentenced to five years.

All were sentenced at the Old Bailey last week on Monday June 29.

A further defendant, 27-year-old Silas Loko from Walworth's Kinglake Estate, had been found not guilty of murder.

On the night he died, Bright had been filming in a studio in Deptford before relocating to a flat in

Euston.

At about 10.40pm a group of men attacked him with a large knife inside the flat.

Bright wrestled the knife away before running to a nearby hotel. The knife was found lying beside him and DNA evidence linked it to Brewster.

Detectives found that Bright had been embroiled in a feud played out on social media.

Petts’ Mercedes - which was found in a yard in Kent around a month after the murder - was tracked on CCTV driving from south London to the Euston area at the time of the attack Mobile phone analysis also placed Brewster and Petts in Euston when Bright was stabbed, with several calls made coordinating the attack.

Ceesay and Brewster were arrested on Wednesday, February 20, 2019.

Petts was arrested a week later.

Detective Inspector Jamie Stevenson, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “[Monday's] sentencing is the culmination of our investigation into the needless death of another young man.

“Our thoughts remain with Bright’s family as they continue to struggle to come to terms with him being snatched from them.

“This fatal stabbing stemmed from several people being involved in taunting on social media.

"I still cannot comprehend how it ended in such a violent murder.”

Locals speak out against plans for giant party boat in south bank

news@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark residents have spoken out against plans to moor an enormous party boat off the south bank of the Thames.

The Ocean Diva, an 86-metre long boat that would host up to 1,500 revellers, could soon be installed off the Swan Lane pier near London Bridge, which is currently unused.

But community group Living Bankside, which claims to represent 25,000 local residents, has expressed concerns over possible air and noise pollution created by the boat, as well littering.

The City of London Corporation is set to review the plans soon - although no date has been set - and Living Bankside has demanded they throw them out.

The group has created a ten-point template letter for people to send to planning authorities to voice concerns about the Ocean Diva plans.

As well as environmental anxieties, the letter raises the issue of the possible impact on the local area when people leave the boat.

"The applicants offer dream-scenarios instead of planning for how to deal with the way real partygoers behave en masse after drinking for many hours aboard. The applicants prefer not to mention the shouting, singing, vomiting, urinating and sometimes violence, which are known partyboat problems," the letter says.

Living Bankside continues: "The applicants’ Acoustic Report claims that noise from the boat and the colonised shore will be attenuated over the river.

This contradicts the science, which is that cold water amplifies noise, and would transmit it efficiently into offices and homes both sides of the Thames...

"The police, the NHS, City cleansing services, Environmental Health Officers and the LPHA would be burdened with dealing with the behaviour of the customers that the Ocean Diva would have profitably filled with drink.

"This would be a private pier, generating private profit, yet the true cost would be paid in damage to business and residential neighbours’ amenity and incursions into the public purse."

The boat would be moored opposite Southwark Cathedral, and staff have also previously voiced their opposition to the plans.

Southwark Cathedral Dean Andrew Nunn said in a letter to planning authorities: “We are informed that the pier will be used for vessels such as Ocean Diva which has a huge capacity as a party and event boat.”

“The size of this barge and the potential disturbance to the area in the evening would be very disruptive and detrimental to the quality of life in the area.”

D9, planning consultants acting on behalf of Ocean Diva, told the News in 2019 that bringing Swan Lane pier back into use would also enable other boats to use the new facilities.

A spokeswoman said: "The planning application seeks the recommissioning of Swan Lane Pier, to bring it back into use."

She added that all kinds of ships would be allowed to use the pier, including the Ocean Diva, but none would be allowed permanently to moor there.

Greg Law, CEO of the operating company that manages Ocean Diva, said last year: “We are excited to bring a stylish new event space to London, one that raises the bar for boats on the Thames in terms of its environmental credentials."

The deadline for objecting to the new scheme is July 13.

Rallying to support our care homes through WhatsApp A GUY'S and St Thomas' elderly care consultant has received praise for setting up a WhatsApp group of health and care professionals, which has acted as an early warning system providing advice, guidance and support to 19 care homes across Lambeth and Southwark, as the COVID-19 outbreak hit.

Dr Tania Kalsi, a consultant geriatrician from Guy's and St Thomas', set up the group on 22 March. The group includes care home managers, GPs, hospital consultants from Guy's and St Thomas' and King's College Hospital, mental health services, pharmacists and hospice staff.

By working together across professions and organisations the group carried out a range of initiatives including: establishing a tracking system in the early stages of the pandemic to alert members of suspected outbreaks of the disease and actions to take, providing advice, medical reviews and urgent access to medication for the sickest patients, and offering additional nursing care through the hospital @home service - which provides hospital care in residential and nursing homes so residents can be cared for in their preferred place of care.

Jonathan Espiritu, deputy home manager at the Tower Bridge Care Home in Southwark, which cares for up to 122 residents, said: "Dr Kalsi pioneered the WhatsApp group and it is here for us day and night. We get

instant advice, whether to isolate a patient, call the @home team or send a resident to hospital. The GPs give us daily updates and we can speak to the hospital's specialists. Southwark Council has played a huge role in making sure we have all the PPE we need throughout this crisis.

"Things are now stable in the care home and we are not afraid, if a second wave should happen. We know they are there to support us."

Dr Kalsi said: "Now we work more flexibly, without the usual division of roles. If a GP isn't able to go to a care home at a specific time, they can message the WhatsApp group and a geriatrician will go instead, for example. We're all part of the same team."

The group, which does not identify individual patient information, has established itself as a safe means of getting immediate guidance across organisations.

It also advertises local and national webinars providing the latest expert advice and, building on the efforts of the WhatsApp group, has started regular virtual meetings via Zoom to problem-solve local issues relating to COVID-19.

Dr Emily Gibbs, a GP with Quay Health Solutions GP Care Home Service, said: “It's knowing that the support is there to help us to do the best we can in a difficult situation. We're all able to benefit from that. What has been amazing is now we have direct contact with the specialists. Everyone has an equal role in the conversation."

foodcycle in peckham is going from strength to strength Tom

FoodCycle, based in Peckham’s All Saint’s Church, takes donated surplus food and turns it into nutritious community meals.

The aim is to reduce food waste, food poverty and tackle social isolation.

Due to the Coronavirus outbreak and government guidelines on social distancing, FoodCycle has quickly adapted to provide doorstep food parcels to the most vulnerable people.

They have seen a wave of new people referred for support including those self-isolating, people who lost their jobs and NHS and frontline workers.

Across the country FoodCycle is making 2,500 deliveries a week and supporting 6,500 people.

Their ‘check in and chat’ telephone service is making over 300 calls a week to make sure recipients are okay.

In Peckham 27 households are receiving deliveries each week - with around 70 people being supported. It is one of eight projects across London - including in Norwood Junction and north and west London.

free outdoor classes Peckham fitness instructor Shane ‘No Shane No Gain’ Williams is now running free outdoor, socially distanced classes for Southwark residents and their families.

They take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at midday and 6pm for 45 minutes with the latest taking place in Camberwell.

Williams, who has more than 22,000 followers on Instagram, has been offering free workouts during the Coronavirus crisis and regularly posts motivation messages about fitness, health, and the importance of being a good role model.

Community group Plastic Free East Dulwich is asking everyone to help tackle the growing littering problem in Southwark’s parks with a two minute clean.

One of Rotherhithe Mutual Aid’s founders has received a Jack Petchey Award for their fantastic work supporting SE16 during lockdown.

Twenty-three-year-old Ellie Gratton helped set up the group that now organises more than 200 volunteers to help the most vulnerable and self-isolating.

Ellie’s role involves matching volunteers to requests and helping train people up who want to lend a hand.

Hanna Phillips, who nominated Ellie for the award, said: “Without Ellie it wouldn’t have been possible to match over 80 requests for support - including food deliveries, food parcels, prescription pick-ups, befriending calls and walking dogs - with teams of neighbours across Rotherhithe.

“Thanks to Ellie’s organisation and dedication, many of these matches are now long-term, ensuring the continuity of support and a community network that hadn’t previously existed.”

On receiving her award Ellie, who was given a letter from Sir Jack and £50, said: “It’s amazing to get this award, and I hope that it highlights the brilliant community work that Rotherhithe Mutual Aid Group and all the Mutual Aid Groups around the country are doing at the moment.

“My contribution to the community has been made possible by the behind the scenes and on the ground work of countless others in the community, and I feel very lucky to be part of this group.

“In these rapidly changing times, the unity and solidarity displayed by communities gives me a lot of hope and strength to continue working towards a more equal future.”

£1.57 billion for arts, but how will the process work?

Well, people could drive less.

From Camberwell College of Arts, to Theatre Peckham and Mountview, and live music venues like the Bussey Building, our arts hubs have launched many successful careers and are a real asset to us. And thousands of creative people who work in the arts live here, from designers to those working in film and tv, musicians and artists.

And over the months when we’ve all been locked down in our homes, even more people have come to realise just how important music, film and art is to our wellbeing and identity.

Yet here and across the UK many arts venues are facing bankruptcy. And many who work in the creative industries have lost all their work and wonder whether there will ever be a future for them in the arts again.

The creative workforce, from production crews, to front of house staff, musicians and actors, most of whom are self-employed, have faced months without work and income as venues suddenly closed and contracts halted to comply with government rulings on social distancing.

I wrote to the chancellor back in April highlighting this as a problem and urging him to set up an emergency fund to ensure the creative industries and all those who work in the performing arts survive the COVID crisis.

The creative industries are a huge success story, both at home and abroad. They contribute over £100 billion to the UK economy every year and are vital to our culture and place in the world.

They’re our third most profitable industry and have for the past decade grown faster than the

amberwell and Peckham’s vibrant arts scene is central to our local economy, our communities and the identity of this area

rest of the economy despite difficult times and government cuts. When the COVID crisis is over we will need the creative industries to still be there for us and to be able to play a leading role in our economic recovery.

That’s why it’s so important that after months of pressure the government this week announced a £1.57bn support package to help protect the future of theatres, galleries, museums, music and cultural venues.

I’m glad the government has listened to the sector. This will be a great relief to the 1000s of people in Camberwell and Peckham who work in the creative industries and all of us whose lives are enriched by music, theatre and art. With still no sign of an end to the pandemic and no certainty when venues can reopen safely this fund is desperately needed to save venues and sustain the creative workforce.

But really important questions remain. How will the government support the 1000s of talented freelancers who are the core of this industry?

Most of the people who have contacted me for help are freelance actors, musicians, TV producers or gallery staff. Many tell me they have fallen between the government's two COVID income support schemes and feel they have been abandoned. One woman contacted me desperately anxious because

like so many, Universal Credit was her only income as her work dried up, but it was insufficient to cover even her monthly rent. Selfemployed people, those working on fixed-term PAYE contracts or operating as limited companies still do not have the financial support they need and the danger is that many may be forced to abandon the creative industries altogether.

The government has yet to say how they will make sure the money gets to those in the creative industries and how the grant application process will work. But it needs to help our and venues but also the creative workforce. The arts are about our flagship venues and heritage buildings like the Royal Albert Hall, English National Opera and the National Theatre but they are about much more than that. The local ecosystems that underpin these venues need to be protected. The arts are also very much about the youth theatres, the independent galleries, and the small music venues that are the centre of communities and provide opportunities to those who don’t feel able to go to the more expensive or larger arts institutions. I’ll continue to liaise with local venues and artists and press the government to ensure that they get the money out quickly and continue to support the sector until such time as it’s all fully open - whenever that will be!

But really important questions remain. How will the government support 1000s of talented freelancers who are the core of this industry?

Our pubs are at the heart of our local community

I

t was a moment that will have been welcomed by many: the first taste of a proper pint in months.

Last Saturday marked the first day since March our boozers could reopen under government rules.

The News was on the scene from several pubs in the borough - strictly for business asking landlords and ladies how their first day of trading went.

Business was slow, but not unreasonably so; people were largely sensible; the men and women behind these pubs grateful to be bringing cash into the tills again.

Boozers are a lifeline in the community.

As we report, petitions have been started to rescue The Rising Sun, on the Rockingham Estate.

Developers want to remove the pub, but some locals say they think it is a lively hub on the estate, with darts teams and Elvis impersonators.

And locals have rallied together to ‘save’ the King’s Arms in Tooley Street, stumping up money for vouchers and merchandise

during lockdown so that it continued to have cashflow.

The strength of feeling is apparent: some punters joined in for a socially distanced sing-along of ‘Give a Little Love’.

A note of caution must be sounded about pubs reopening. It is understandable some will have trepidation about these changes the virus has not gone away, and nor will it for quite some time.

It is also worth stressing, contrary to what some believe, guidelines do not permit you to meet all of your friends in one go at the local pub, much as one might have done just months ago.

The guidelines are clear: when sitting indoors, it’s a maximum of six people allowed, from two households, while still observing social distancing.

But on the whole, it seems Southwark punters safely and responsibly enjoyed a glass or two on ‘Super Saturday’, while also providing a much-needed lifeline to hardworking publicans.

Cheers to that.

What the Dickens?

It comes as a series of Southwark landmarks were lit up blue one more time in honour of the NHS’ 72nd birthday, including The Shard.

On the subject of queens, a real-life Queen has also been in an unusual place recently.

Her Maj at Millwall Eagle-eyed Lions fans may have noticed an unusual face among the crowd of the livestreamed games at The Den recently.

Matches are still being played behind closed doors because of coronavirus, meaning crowd noises are simulated.

So too are the faces of those in the crowd. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was spotted in the crowd during the clash versus Swansea City in the Championship, wearing a full kit.

There was no chance of a royal wave, however as she was a cardboard figure placed in the stands before kick-off, and had no arms.

Songs of praise in SE1

Last week’s Songs of Praise will have been familiar to many local viewers.

The special Florence Nightingale-themed episode was filmed at the London Fire Brigade’s Lambeth River Station on the Albert Embankment.

The Brigade’s chaplain was interviewed to mark the anniversary of the NHS, with special mention going to our local ‘Lady of the Lamp.’

Michelle Thorpe, the ‘Pearly Queen’ of Rotherhithe, completed a walk on the wing of a plane - claiming to be the first-ever ‘pearlie’ to have ever braved the daring feat.

The fundraiser took over £7,000, which will go towards UK Homes for Heroes, of which Ms Thorpe is a director.

The charity aims to help homeless ex-service personnel. The charity said it is “over the moon with such kind generosity shown towards this event, which will help this small but big hearted charity to carry on through these dark times.”

Fred Harper Prepares To

Take Music Into The Future The drummer from Surrey Quays, Fred Harper, started off like many other drummers by bashing on any surface available, and subsequently driving everyone to distraction, writes Michael Holland...

He recalls that ‘whenever my parents would take me to gigs as a child, I would studiously watch the drummer from the side lines, without paying any attention to any of the other band members, and not really knowing why. Eventually it became apparent that I too might be able to play those things, so I began hounding my parents for a drum kit.’

Fred’s father said that he had learn to play a ‘real’ instrument before he could have a drum kit: ‘I played a trumpet for two years and as soon as I got a drum kit, it went under the stairs never to see the light of day again.’

The young musician went on to study at the Brit School in Croydon and Leeds College of Music where he got a degree in jazz performance. ‘Whilst my formal training is in traditional Jazz,’ he begins, ‘what I really love is making people dance… There’s no greater feeling than that of being the drummer in a band playing for a crowd of people moving to the rhythm of your every drum stroke like a musical puppet master!’

Fred has performed at Glastonbury Festival and toured Europe with various ensembles, and says, ‘It’s a lovely

experience to play to a room full of appreciative people, whom you’ve never met, in a country you’ve never been to before, and connecting with them like family.’

Alas, with Covid-19, all the live gigging work has evaporated for the foreseeable future. He has a gig planned for November, but that’s tentative, and this drummer needs to be drumming. He tells me, ‘I decided I needed to develop a musical project I could run from my bedroom that would only need myself to perform it, that would be suitable to be viewed on a smartphone screen and listened on through tiny phone speakers, because that’s the format 90 per cent of an audience will be viewing it.’ Fred made sure I was keeping up before he picked up the beat again. ‘This is videos of myself performing ‘live remixes’ of classic 90s and Noughties RnB and Garage… The emphasis is on fun and making people smile and sing along, in order to cheer people up during lockdown.’ He emphasised that the videos will also include Salsa, Reggae and Drum and Bass.

‘The response so far has been more positive than I could ever have imagined.’ adding, ‘With some videos getting up to 100,000 views!’

After completing the first series of 10 episodes, Fred is now taking some time to look into live-streaming so he can perform and interact in real time with viewers all

over the world.

What about the future? ‘Covid-19 is probably going to change the arts and music industries permanently on every level,’ he states honestly. ‘We might not see a return to the way things were for quite a few years, mainly because the tiny margins most arts venues and performance venues operate within will now be unworkable.’

But this doom and gloom that many in the industry are feeling right now has not touched Fred Harper because he is prepared to make whatever changes are necessary for him to get his music out there: ‘The successful acts going forward will be those who are truly willing to be 100 per cent adaptable, and not try and drag the old concepts of what “performance” and “audience” once were into the post-crisis live music landscape.’

I asked him to explain. ‘Everything is going to get smaller in order for people to be able to consume things in bitesize chunks on screens, phones and VR goggles…Whilst I’m sad, and will grieve for the old way of life and gigging, I feel like I’m ready for those challenges, and am already making plans to leave the preconceptions of the old world behind me and move into the future.’

Peckham Illustrator has Work Bought by National justice Museum

Jael Umerah-Makelemi is an art director in the advertising industry and an illustrator for Nubiart - a illustration-based business she founded with aims to not only celebrate black women, but shed light on the issues that they often face, writes Michael Holland...

Jael, from Peckham, began creating things – drawing, knitting, painting - at a young age. Looking back she says, ‘I enjoyed the freedom to create whatever I wanted… I began illustrating as I needed a creative outlet - a way for me to express the way I think and feel.’

And that creative outlet helped Jael when she developed a series of mental health disorders that she kept bottled up and hidden away: ’When I couldn’t speak about my emotions I would just illustrate them. That’s what really inspired me to push myself and become an illustrator. My art gave me a voice that I didn’t have at the time.’

There was a point in her life when she was so low she didn’t have the physical or mental energy to do anything: ‘My creative career was put on hold for a few months,’ she reveals. ‘I felt so stuck - like there was no way out. I eventually pulled myself up and went to seek support. In my culture and

many others, mental health is still seen as a taboo, so I’m using my creativity to show that it doesn’t need to be one.

Now Jael has found some peace through her work: ‘I use my art to to talk about mental health and promote self-care. And I love the fact that I’m able to create illustrations that not only reflect my life and experiences, but have the ability to connect with, and help, others through their dark moments.’

On her journey Jael has been commissioned by the BBC to create illustrations for the Nought & Crosses social campaign. ‘I grew up reading novels by Malorie Blackman,’ she starts, ‘and Noughts and crosses was my favourite as it made me feel empowered. Words couldn’t describe how moved and warm I felt during this project.’

Another career highlight was when her illustration ‘Bleeding heart’ was purchased by The National JusticeMuseum. She explains how this came about: ‘During the pandemic, I have been working closely with The View magazine, which is a magazine created by women, for women in the criminal justice system. I was commissioned to create four pieces that depict the life of female prisoners during the Covid-19

crisis… I was lost for words when I heard the news as I couldn’t believe that something I started as a creative outlet caught the attention of a big museum.’

After creating work around mental health awareness the artist says her art is now ‘fully centred around the Black Lives Matter Movement and how I can capture emotions and messages through this time.’

With Covid-19, Jael says she has had a lot of time to reflect. ‘The virus has definitely forced me to slow down as I’m used to a very hectic and busy schedule. And although it may not seem like it, it is a great time for young creatives like myself as it’s a chance for us to put ourselves out there; I’m making a lot of new connections and e-meeting some amazing people.’

So to get through the crisis this young creative is working on her craft and creating art ‘that really means something’. She says that ‘working with people like The View magazine has really helped me to figure out what type of work I actually enjoy doing, and it’s work that can educate and make an impact.’

Post Covid-19, Jael doesn’t see too many changes in her life as she is used to working from home. ‘But,’ she

begins, ‘I do think the way I socialise will change. I definitely have a newfound appreciation for spending time with my family and friends face to face, and will be using social media much less once things get back to normal.’

Any last words? ‘I also plan on getting back into meditation as it has really helped me in the past.’

Businessman, philanthropist,

slave trade investor Who really was the man who founded Guy's hospital?

Amid recent anti-racist protests and re-evaluations of figures from the past, questions have been raised over one particularly influential south Londoner, writes Kit Heren...

Thomas Guy is a name that perhaps few would know today, but his surname is familiar to many Londoners. He was a successful businessman and philanthropist who founded a large hospital for the poor of south London in the eighteenth century that remains in place as a major NHS hospital to this day.

Much of Guy’s money came from one investment: buying shares in the South Sea company, which had a monopoly on selling slaves to the Spanish colonies in South America.

Guy acquired shares in the company in 1711. It began transporting slaves to South America in 1713.

Researchers from the University of Southampton have estimated that the South Sea company took around 34,000 people to South America as slaves.

Guy sold his shares in 1720 for about £50,000, or nearly £400 million in today’s money.

After students and others raised concerns about the source of his fortune in June this year, the trust that runs Guy’s Hospital said it would remove its statues of him from public view, but added it would not change the hospital's name.

Guy's said in a statement: “We absolutely recognise the public hurt and anger that is generated by the symbolism of public statues of historical figures associated with the slave trade in some way.”

A later campaign sought to change the name of the neighbouring Guy’s campus of King’s College London.

Campaign leader Ayesha Khan, a student at King’s told the News: “It just really disgusted me that my institution that I’m really proud to be part of, that welcomes international students and staff from all over the world, is named after a man like that.

“I just don’t think it’s at all right for us to be associated with this man who made so much money off the slave trade.”

But is there a distinction to be drawn between Thomas Guy, who made money through investing in a company that traded slaves, and someone like Edward Colston, who was an active slave trader?

Professor Roger Jones, editor of the British Journal of General Practice, is more cautious about Guy’s legacy.

Prof Jones, who has been Professor of General Practice at Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ School of Medicine, said: “Guy certainly wasn’t remotely involved in the active business of the slave trade. We don’t even know if he knew that the South Sea company was a slaving company. Of course you assume that he did.

“It was a government initiative to let the company offer shares, and Guy was literally one of hundreds of people who bought the shares.”

Prof Jones drew attention to Guy’s philanthropic work with the hospital.

“There is no doubt that Guy was altruistic,” he added. “He lived down the road from where the hospital is and he saw the poverty and disease and lack of facilities for the indigent poor, and his hospital was called ‘Mr Guy’s hospital for the incurables’ - it was for people who couldn’t get help anywhere else.”

Although Guy wasn’t as closely involved in the slave trade as an active slaver like Colston, some people have argued that we should remember his reportedly harsh attitude to domestic business alongside his reputation as a philanthropist.

Andy Brockman, historian and editor of the Pipeline, a heritage news website, called Guy “a noted miser and rogue employer” in a 2016 article.

Mr Brockman told the News: “Even for the time, his reputation in terms of the way he dealt with his employees and the way he did business - it wasn’t the shiniest… Certainly, given that Guy was controversial even in his own lifetime, I think we have to acknowledge that.”

It’s clear that there were at least two sides to Guy. His investments helped fund the enslavement of thousands of people and might have treated his workers poorly even by eighteenth century labour standards. He even denied access to almshouses he paid for in his home town of Tamworth to people from Tamworth in a fit of pique when he was rejected after he ran to be the town's MP. Conversely the lives of many of the poor people of Southwark may have been considerably improved by his hospital in his lifetime and certainly in the years since his death.

Mr Brockman compared Guy with

the current debate about Winston Churchill, whose Parliament Square statue was boarded up in June after being graffitied in anti-racist protests.

Churchill is famous as Britain’s heroic, inspirational leader in the Second World War. Perhaps less wellknown are his belief in a hierarchy of races, although his defenders have said this was a typical view among people of his generation, or his lack of action during the Bengal famine in 1943, when as many as three million people are believed to have died of starvation.

Mr Brockman went on: “I think the controversy about Churchill 's career and character shows how this kind of debate is very bad at dealing with the nuances in people’s biographies.

The image of Churchill as a great war leader and national icon, is coming hard up against comments he made about race and his support for eugenics and some people find that very uncomfortable; although in my view they shouldn't.

"More than one aspect can be "true" and the debate has to be one about acknowledging and accommodating those 'truths'."

"If you take the long view, our attitudes to major figures and how we memorialise them in our public spaces, have always been an evolving conversation which often mixes both artistic fashion, sentiment and contemporary political and social views," Mr Brockman added.

Ms Khan’s petition to rename the campus has more than 15,000 signatures so far. But for campaigners, the broader goal is to raise awareness about Guy, and how he made his money.

Ms Khan added: “It is something that I hope can eventually be changed, but if not, I think it’s really great that so many more people have become aware of who he was. It’s important to learn about your history and try to understand where so much of our wealth comes from as a nation.”

King's said in a statement: "We... will work with our partners at the trust and the charity to consider the right way forward.

"We are committed to playing our part in fighting racism and racial discrimination and recognise the strength of feeling shown by our own community of students and staff and across the city."

The Lions were protecting an unbeaten run lasting more than 24 years and needed three points to move to within two of sixth place.

Relations between the clubs are good, yet the Addicks decided not to allow Millwall to place their flag in the away end.

Millwall have done it for other sides since the restart, with no fans in the stadiums. It seemed a peculiar move from Charlton. Why rile up the opposition, giving Lions boss Gary Rowett another motivational tool?

There were rumours online before the game that Charlton had said no to the flag. And Rowett confirmed it afterwards when asked about Alex Pearce’s celebration.

There was one Millwall flag in the vicinity of the ground, and it certainly appeared to act as some

kind of inspiration judging by Pearce enthusiastically celebrating in the direction of a flat in a tower block behind the Jimmy Seed stand.

Charlton had won two and drawn one of their games without conceding a goal.

You would think they were confident enough in themselves without having to resort to such pettiness over a flag.

Whoever made the decision made a right cock-up and Rowett took the chance to make sure that the absence of the flag was down to the home team.

Pearce is a big character, someone who would certainly use something like that to get his team-mates going.

Millwall were in aggressive mood from the start and perhaps Jayson Molumby was lucky to stay on the pitch after catching Albie Morgan with an elbow in the first half. Molumby was taken off at half-time with Rowett confirming that was mainly down to the risk of being reduced to ten men.

Rowett had picked another different formation, and it shows how tactically good he is that it worked and yielded three points. Rowett has favoured 5-23 but a lack of attackers meant he sent out his side in a 5-3-2 formation at The Valley.

Molumby and Ryan Leonard played either side of the excellent Ryan Woods in midfield. Ben Thompson came on for Molumby, initially playing in the same position but then partnering Woods in a midfield two before moving to the right side of attack late in the game after the introduction of Shaun Williams to help

secure the result. Thompson shows the importance of having tactically intelligent players to fit Rowett’s various systems.

That was also typified by Billy Mitchell.

The nineteen-year-old is a central midfielder by trade and that’s where he surely has a promising future. But when Mahlon Romeo’s groin tightened late on Mitchell was sent on as a right wing-back.

Apparently he has been one of the best trainers since the return, and Rowett felt he had to find a role for him in the team.

For Jake Cooper’s late goal, Mitchell was pushing high up on the right, allowing Millwall to stretch the home defence.

Woods, who was so influential, sent play out to the left where Connor Mahoney cut inside Adam Matthews.

Mahoney’s low shot was spilled by Dillon Phillips and there was Cooper, the 6ft6ins overlapping centre-back to rifle the rebound into the roof of the net.

Scored just below those Millwall fans in the flat. Perfect.

Charlton had their chances. Cooper blocked Albie Morgan's shot in the first

minute before Tomer Hemed ran into the inside-left channel to shoot low, but Bart Bialkowski made a comfortable save.

Phillips saved Matt Smith's header from Shaun Hutchinson's cross in the 24th minute as Millwall had a sustained spell of pressure on the away goal.

Millwall had a let-off when Morgan's ball found Macauley Bonne who was through one-on-one on the right side of the box but Bialkowski saved with his feet.

Jed Wallace had an excellent chance to put the visitors ahead in the 35th minute from Woods' dinked pass that took out the home defence, but Phillips came off his line to deny the Lions attacker.

Hemed was inches away from putting the hosts in front four minutes before the break but his hooked effort went just wide of Bialkowski's right-hand post.

Rowett wants to cut Woods deal Manager has exact idea on transfers EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT wants Ryan Woods in his Millwall midfield next season.

Rowett didn’t hesitate to answer “yes” when the News asked him this week if he would like to turn 26-yearold Woods’ loan from Stoke City into a permanent deal.

Woods joined Millwall in January after falling out of favour under Michael O’Neill at Stoke.

He has been key as Rowett has attempted to make the team less direct than under Neil Harris, with midfielders who get on the ball and build moves more intelligently. Against Charlton last Friday Woods was at the hub of the move that led to the goal, playing the ball from right to left before Jake Cooper fired home following Connor Mahoney’s shot.

Millwall have an option for a permanent transfer for Woods, and Rowett would like to activate it.

“Yes, yes I would. He’s a player that’s given us a bit more control of the ball,” Rowett said. “He’s such an intelligent footballer but he can also show the other side of the game which we know is important to our team and to our club.

“So he’s a player that I’d like to be here next season. We’re working incredibly hard behind the scenes with Alex [Aldridge, head of recruitment] and his team to try and make headway in terms of the conversations and the players we’ve targeted.

“We know exactly what we want, we know exactly what we want to try and do. So then it’s just a case of can we do it? Often you have player A that you

“We’ve got some really good targets and I’m really excited to see what we can add in the off-season.

Also in Rowett’s plans for next season is Mahoney.

Mahoney arrived last summer with

high expectations to match the high transfer fee of more than £1million Millwall paid Bournemouth for him.

Only just over 50 per cent of Mahoney’s appearances this season have been starts, but he showed his class at Charlton last Friday by cutting inside to shoot before Cooper tucked in the rebound.

Neil Harris brought in Mahoney to provide the service for Matt Smith, and the winger has shown that he can deliver quality crosses.

2018 or 2020? Coops can’t decide which team is best

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JAKE COOPER can’t decide if Neil Harris’ 2018 side or the current one is best – but the defender is pleased Millwall have shown their ability to challenge for the play-offs wasn’t a “one-off”.

Harris’ side went on an extraordinary run in their first season back in the Championship, seventeen unbeaten league games taking them into the playoff places with three games left.

But the “steam train” as Harris called the side just ran out of momentum as successive defeats to Fulham and Middlesbrough ended their dream of a shot at the Premier League.

That side hardly changed after Christmas.

Cooper and Shaun Hutchinson were the centre-back pairing as the Lions had the joint-fourth best defence in the league.

Shaun Williams gave George Saville the licence to go forward, the latter

scoring ten goals from midfield.

And up front Steve Morison and Lee Gregory took many defences by surprise with their ferocious work-rate and aerial threat.

It was very much a 4-4-2 system, with Jed Wallace and Ben Marshall providing the ammunition from out wide.

Two years on and Millwall have a new manager, a completely new attack and midfielders such as Jayson Molumby and Ryan Woods giving the side more control in possession under Gary Rowett.

Before Wednesday’s game against Middlesbrough (after we went to press), Millwall had the chance to move to within two points of Harris’ Cardiff in sixth, depending on other results.

It might still be a long-shot but few would have believed in October, when Harris walked away after seven games without a win and Millwall in the lower reaches of the table, that the play-offs would still be a possibility with four games left.

Cooper finds it difficult to choose which side is best.

“It’s a tough question,” Cooper replied. “We’re different. We were very regimented two years ago, we were very well coached. We knew what we were doing, defensively we were great.

“This season we’ve developed and evolved a little bit. We’ve different styles of play and, who knows, it’s early days but we’re looking like a strong squad. If we can keep building then who knows where it could take us.

“We’re happy with how we’ve done.

One thing we might end up looking back on is the amount of draws we’ve had. We need to affect games more where we can turn draws into wins.

We’d be even higher up the table than we are now.

“But we’ve still got a chance and we want to try and get everything we can out of these remaining games.

“But it’s hard to pick which is the best team [2018 or 2020] because they’re so different. I think both teams are great and it’s nice now to know that that wasn’t a one-off a couple of years ago.

“This club can be up near the top part of the table challenging.”

“So that’s Connor’s challenge. What he shows – particularly when he comes off the bench because maybe he can play with a bit more freedom and not worry about the other side of the game as much – is that he’s got match-winning ability.

“Our challenge, my challenge as a manager, is to see whether I can get that out of him. We know he can do things other players can’t do.

“He wants to be in the team, he wants to influence games, and in order to do that he has to do one or two things off the ball slightly better.”

Millwall confirmed new contracts for Cooper and Shane Ferguson last month, allaying fears they may have to sell players to raise cash.

Clubs currently have no gate receipts as games are played behind

closed doors to try to limit the potential spread of Covid-19 in large gatherings.

The Lions’ income on match-day tickets was almost £6million in 2019.

Now clubs may have to deal with no gate receipts for at least the first half of next season as well.

Millwall agreed new contracts with Mahlon Romeo and Shaun Hutchinson before the outbreak of the virus and the subsequent suspension of football.

“I think it’s great intent from the club, they’ve been really reliable for us, they’ve been great with us as players,” Cooper said.

“There’s no uncertainty at our club, we’re very happy and know the situation. It shows – especially when you see what’s happened to Wigan and other clubs – that it’s a stable football club.

“We’re very lucky to play for the club and the manager that we have.

We’re happy moving forward and we feel that the club is going in the right direction.”

Cooper is a key player in Gary Rowett’s current preferred 5-2-3 system, getting more responsibility on the ball.

It’s something he worked on from his days at Reading.

“He could see from training that I could do more with the ball,” Cooper said of Rowett. “He played me in the centre a couple of times, and going out wider he trusts me, Hutch [Shaun

Hutchinson] and Muzza [Murray Wallace] to get on the ball and bring it out from the back.

“He also asks us to hit that long diagonal to Matt Smith or whoever is up there, he still wants that at different times just to mix up the game so we’re not one-dimensional.

We have different ways of playing and that makes it more difficult for the opposition.

“I had to work on [technique], obviously, because coming through at Reading everything was very technical and they wanted us to play that way through the academy. I got good chances to work on it then as I was always involved in teams that liked to have the ball.

“Being left-footed gave me a bit of an edge anyway, it was different to a lot of people. It’s about working on it and trying to be safe. I have made a couple of mistakes on the ball, as most centre-halves do.

“I want to be more assured and reliable for the manager.”

Lions could get backroom shake-up

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett will decide on the make-up of his backroom team for the next campaign during the closed season.

Adam Barrett is currently interim assistant manager after Callum Davidson departed to take the manager’s job at St. Johnstone. Barrett is also the favourite to replace Sol Campbell at Southend.

Under-23 manager Kevin Nugent is in a temporary role as first-team coach.

Rowett didn’t want to bring in any new faces so late in the season after Davidson left for the Scottish Premiership.

“Callum left quite soon and therefore we felt as though the best way of dealing with it was to try not to lose any continuity. Try not to have too much change,” Rowett said.

“I spoke to Adam and Nuge and obviously Adam stepped up to assistant manager and Nuge came in as first-team coach.

“Nothing’s definitive. We’ll sit down and assess it at the end of the season and we’ll see whether that’s something we might want to do permanently or not.

“They’re both important people at the club, they’ve both shown an ability to step up a position and affect what we’re doing in a positive way.

“That’s probably the most definitive I can be at the moment because it is a temporary thing and we’ll assess what we need moving forward.”
