Those classed as particularly vulnerable to Coronavirus include cancer patients, those with lung conditions like COPD, and pregnant women with heart disease. This week they have been told, for the first time in three months, that they can leave home if maintaining strict social distancing.

The number of those flagged in Southwark has more than doubled during the pandemic, growing from around 4,000 residents the council was aware of at the beginning of March, to 10,765 as of May 18. They now account for around three per cent of the borough’s total population.

But despite a huge public awareness campaign, less than half these people counted by the council are formally registered with the government’s own shielded list and, of this group, only 46 per cent (or 2,060 residents) are receiving government-sponsored food deliveries.

The discrepancy can be attributed to people not realising they can register for food parcels, residents deciding not to subscribe as they are able to afford and arrange their own food, or because other individuals, organisations and community groups are already meeting this need. They may also, mistakenly, believe they are not entitled due to their immigration status.

are available for those with no recourse to public funds.

In total, around fifteen per cent of the shielders who registered with the government said they were unable to meet their basic needs - such as food deliveries or prescriptions.

The council says registration rates are lowest in some of the most deprived areas of the borough - meaning there could be many more people left struggling who are entitled to support.

The neighbourhood areas - or wards - with the largest shielding populations in Southwark are Nunhead and Queen’s Road (886), Newington (616) and Old Kent Road and Peckham - which both have 614 shielders.

By mid-May the council had tried to call more than half those on their list to make sure they were receiving supplies, including prescriptions, and to ask if they needed help with other issues such as housing.

But, so far, its team has not been able to reach 243 people - all of whom are now receiving welfare checks from teams going house-to-house.

As expected, the majority of people on the shielded list are in one of the most vulnerable age groups; 50 to 79 years of age.

On top of the 10,500 shielded residents, there are a further 10,000 believed to be particularly vulnerable to the effects of the virus who are being supported by Southwark Community Hub. Last week Southwark Council committed to continue this work, a joint COVID-19 response with charities and voluntary groups, into September.

This week his name was in lights at Piccadilly Circus, thanks to a special message from all the team at Evelina overwhelmed by his courage and the public’s generosity.

The brave five-year-old, who now lives with his adoptive family in Kent, was inspired by Captain Tom to raise funds for the hospital that saved his life as a baby.

When just weeks old Tony was in intensive care at Evelina after suffering harrowing abuse at the hands of his biological parents. He later had to have both legs amputated.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A group of Rotherhithe neighbours who had performed impromptu concerts to thank the NHS every week will regroup in an extended concert to commemorate the NHS’ anniversary.

The band of neighbours on Hurley Crescent had won attention for their socially distanced musical performances prior to the ‘Clap for Carers’ every Thursday - with each neighbour playing a different musical instrument.

Performances had included songs from The Beatles, Vera Lynn, and others. Now the group is planning an extended concert to mark the 72nd anniversary of the NHS on July 5, after calls for a final nationwide clap to mark the occasion.

“The clap for carers just suddenly seemed to stop,” said Paul Hagen, one of the nine-strong group of guitarists, violinists and musicians taking part.

“I thought it was such a shame really, because it really brought the community together.

“But instead we decided the next thing we would do is something for the anniversary of the NHS [on July 5].”

While the time of the concert in the afternoon is not yet confirmed, the group are planning a medley of the hits that they have been entertaining passers-by with during lockdown.

“It was sad not to be doing it, and seeing the people who had turned up for it,” added Paul. “It showed that people were really enjoying it.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Police have launched an appeal to help find a man linked to the ‘senseless’ murder of Bermondsey man Joshua Boadu, two years on from the killing.

The popular 23-year-old - widely known as SJ - was stabbed by attackers on Bermondsey’s Linsey Street in June 2018.

No motive was ever found for the broad daylight stabbing, which caused Joshua’s death eleven days later in King’s College Hospital.

But while two men, Denilson Davis, 21, and a sixteen-year-old who cannot be named, were sentenced to life at the Old Bailey last year, a third man linked to the murder, Matthew Adebiyi, is still being sought by police.

Prosecutors told the trial last year that Adebiyi had “run away” to Nigeria to avoid “being held to account for his actions on that day.”

The prosecution also alleged that videos on the-then nineteen-year-old’s phone showed him in a “celebratory mood” in a recording studio in Peckham, hours after Joshua’s stabbing on June 11.

Now two years on, police say they do not know where Adebiyi is. “Matthew Adebiyi, whose current whereabouts are unknown, is sought in connection with the murder,” said Scotland Yard.

Family of the 23-year-old murder victim, who dreamed of becoming an engineer, heartbreakingly revealed last year that ‘SJ’ had been excited for his first-ever family holiday to Canada - planned for the day after he was stabbed.

“Words cannot describe how the heartache and emotional anguish this senseless killing has caused and the impact on the family has been astronomical,” they said in a statement in September.

“Josh had his whole life ahead of him and he was full of so much untapped potential, but his life was cut short due to a vicious and senseless murder.

“Things will never be the same for us and we have to live with this for the rest of our lives.”

Convicted killers Denilson Davis and the unnamed sixteen-year-old are currently serving a minimum 21 years and fifteen years behind bars respectively.

police appeal as ‘man is stabbed at Airbnb party’

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A man stabbed in Denmark Hill was attacked during an AirBnB party, say investigating officers.

The Met is working under the assumption that the 26-year-old, who remains in hospital, was knifed during a group fight.

He was taken to hospital by car in a critical condition in the early hours of Monday, June 15, but has since stabilised.

He is no longer considered to be at risk of losing his life.

Detective constable Rob Neville, said: "We believe the victim was at a party in an address that had

been rented out via AirBnB when he was attacked.

"He is incredibly lucky; but for the speed at which he was taken to hospital this could well have been a murder investigation.

"I need to hear from anyone who was at the party and witnessed an altercation, or who saw people leaving in haste.

"This was a violent incident that nearly cost a man his life and it is imperative that we find those responsible."

Three men were arrested on suspicion of GBH with intent - one aged 24, and two 23-year-olds. All have now been bailed.

Spitting woman jailed for 26 weeks

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A woman who racially abused and spat in her victim's face before coughing at officers and claiming she had COVID-19 has been jailed.

June Carol Cowan, aged 52, from Crystal Palace, was convicted of racially aggravated assault and assaulting two emergency workers.

She was handed 26 weeks in prison and ordered to pay £100 compensation to each of her victims.

Police detained Cowan after they were flagged down by a member of public during a routine patrol in Westow Street in Crystal Palace on Monday, June 8.

The victim told them she had been racially abused and spat at in the street.

Cowan claimed she was a COVID-19 sufferer and coughed at the officers while in the police car.

She was arrested and remanded in custody, appearing in court the following day, where she pleaded guilty.

"Spitting or coughing in the face at anyone is disgusting and unacceptable behaviour any time, but given the concerns around COVID-19 that we are all currently face it is appalling," said Inspector Duncan Anderson.

Pupils welcomed back Teachers, parents, pupils and support workers at schools across England have been back in the familiar surroundings for the past three weeks.

Boys and girls in nursery, reception, Year 1 and Year 6 joined the children of key CASE STUDY 1 HINCHINGBROOKE AT HINCHINGBROOKE School on the outskirts of Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, principal Mark Patterson has welcomed back Year 10 and Year 12 pupils.

The students, who will be doing their GCSEs and A-levels next year, have returned to a very different school from the one they last saw in March.

The school, which is part of the ACES Academies Trust, is operating on a rota system.

Year 12 has been split into two groups – one group comes in on a Monday, and the other comes in on a Tuesday.

Year 10 has been split into three groups. One group is attending school on Wednesday, another on Thursday and one on a Friday.

Mr Patterson said: “While it’s important for everyone to be back at school, it’s clear you have to prioritise those students who are nearer to their national examinations because they’re the first ones who’ll be tested externally next year.

“Giving them some face-toface time before the summer is crucial. Familiarising them with school again shouldn’t be underestimated.”

It’s straight back into business as usual for the Year 12s, who have been given their

workers in schools from June 1.

Arrangements were also made for pupils in Years 10 and 12 to spend crucial contact time with teachers.

Whereas Year 10s will have Personal, Social, Health and Economic lessons on their first day back at school, before going into the usual English, Maths and Science.

With lots of debate surrounding whether children should return to school or not, Mr Patterson is keen to point out that even the best

online learning systems do not compare to being in the classroom with a teacher.

He said: “They’ve been out a long time and remote learning is not nearly as good as faceto-face learning. We know that from research and we know that from our experience as well.”

And while some parents are divided over the prospect of

sending their children back to school, others are clearly in favour of going back to school.

Alesia Dickinson, a parent to two Year 10 students, said: “They’ve got hand sanitising stations, one-way systems, the teachers are making sure everyone is social distancing.

“The communication school provided has reassured parents and I don’t feel any concerns now compared to how I did before.”

Mr Patterson added: “Students are children – it’s very hard for them to motivate themselves in a disciplined way all day every day. That structure is crucial to them all.”

Student Rheeya Makwana, who is 17, said: “I was so happy when I was told we were going back to school because I really enjoy lessons.

“We’ve been having online lessons and voiceover PowerPoints, but it’s not really the same as being in a classroom. The structure was really good and I felt like I learned a lot more being back at school. I came home in such a good mood.

“It was obviously quite different being two metres away from everyone, but they still tried to teach as we normally would so it wasn’t too different other than that.”

Embark Trust leader Matthew Crawford said: “It’s lovely to hear the children playing and see schools becoming vibrant again.

“As soon as lockdown began we started work on our Reconnection to Recovery and Resilience programme, a nine-stage support package to welcome children back safely.

“We’re following the government guidelines but in a way that’s fun for the children – for example, we aren’t marking big Xs on the floor to show them where to go but, in some schools, painting snakes in bright colours.

“And we’re not ploughing

straight back into Maths and English – we wanted to meet the children’s needs creatively when they returned before moving into a more formal curriculum.”

Most Embark schools are now back at around 25 to 30 per cent capacity, up from around two per cent when they were just welcoming vulnerable children and those of key workers.

For example, over the past few weeks, Richardson Endowed Primary in Smalley,

Derbyshire, has seen 53 of its 210 pupils walk back through its doors.

Headteacher Kate Mason said: “I get calls every day from parents who want their children to return. The parents all talk to each other so they’re hearing positive stories about children returning and that’s spreading confidence.

“Parents’ biggest concerns are around children’s mental health and wellbeing – they’re worried their children will

Dr Wass says this gives children an opportunity to vital develop social skills.

Dr Wass also points to the importance of stability and routine, which, despite parents’ best efforts, may have been affected during lockdown.

Cycle highway begins again in Bermondsey

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Construction has begun again on the Cycleway 4 route on Bermondsey’s Jamaica Road, after a pause.

The segregated cycle route will ultimately see a split-cycle section from Tower Bridge to Greenwich when finally completed.

It had been paused in March due to the coronavirus outbreak, with the section of the route originally slated for completion in April.

It comes as TfL has announced extra cycle docking stations in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, including outside Bermondsey and Canada Water tube stations.

These are due to be built this summer, with another Boris Bike station to be

built outside London Bridge by the end of the year.

“We welcome the return of the Cycleway 4 works and the introduction of Santander bikes along Jamaica Road to Canada Water station,” said Southwark Council’s transport boss, Richard Livingstone.

“We are busy working with people in the borough, creating space for pedestrians and encouraging more people to walk and cycle.

“Together we can improve road safety and maintain a sustained and significant reduction in air and noise pollution for everyone here in Southwark.”

TfL officials say it is important for people to walk and cycle during the pandemic, as capacity on buses and tubes are limited, meaning they would be quickly crowded if used normally.

In a press release sent last Thursday (June 18), Southwark Council confirmed it had written to addresses in the Queen’s Road area confirming work had now been paused while it considered 'alternative solutions'.

The idea for building - known as QR4 - was first developed in 2013, aiming to create new office space for frontline children's and housing services.

Its latest iteration was due to go to the planning committee in June, and if approved opened in 2022.

A day centre for adults with disabilities, on the site just opposite Queen’s Road station, was demolished to make way for the new build, despite protests from a parents and carers group.

In Peckham, a long-running campaign from residents had lobbied against the project from the offset, with everything from the size, design, and location proving divisive.

The council conceded enough to change architects and make revisions to the building - and promised to avoid some youth services from being provided at the location, over fears of rival gang members coming into contact.

In a statement, the council said the review had come as a result of COVID-19, forcing all major projects and expenditure to be reassessed.

This is both due to a widening budget gap due to falling council tax and business rates income, and the move to working from home due to lockdown and the need to social distance.

Dr Moody, who was born in Jamaica, travelled to London in 1904 to study medicine. He graduated at the top of his King's College London class in 1910.

But despite his glittering academic achievements, he was refused work due to the colour of skin.

Undeterred by the prejudice he faced, in 1913 Moody set up his own practice in Queen’s Road, Peckham, where he

gained a reputation for treating the poorest for free well before the NHS. That year he proposed to a white British nurse and colleague Olive Tranter. The couple faced prejudice and discrimination but they stayed together and went on to have six children in their long happy marriage.

After the First World War, Moody set up the League of Coloured People.

Fellow members included Jomo Kenyatta - the first leader of the independent Kenya - and singer and activist Paul Robeson.

His campaigning was key in passing the 1965 Race Relations Act, the landmark legislation that banned discrimination on the grounds of colour, race, ethnicity or nationality.

During the pandemic, town hall officials had been forced to step in to buy gloves and masks for care homes in Southwark when suppliers failed to deliver.

A meeting on Monday evening into the impact of coronavirus on the care sector heard that 800,000 items of PPE were delivered to Southwark care organisations by council staff.

“We’re not going to do away with the ‘bank of last resort’ until there is a vaccine,” said Genette Laws, Southwark’s director of commissioning.

“We’re continuing with the bank of last resort in case there is a second wave.”

The meeting also heard from

trade union officials, who spoke of frontline carers’ concerns that the government’s track-and-trace programme was not effective enough to track outbreaks among staff.

And it was revealed that five of Southwark’s seventeen care homes have not been tested for coronavirus - but this was explained as being because those homes weren’t for elderly residents, and testing had only recently become available for them.

“Our concerns are mainly about track and tracing,” said April Ashley, of the UNISON union, which represents care staff. “I know it’s early days, but we’re still concerned about that.

“Staff are able to get adequate PPE now. But one of the many issues at the beginning was that there was no information about what sort of PPE was required.

“Clap For Carers, that was really appreciated - but what staff really wanted was proper PPE.” A “lack of understanding” about how social care works on the ground

also became apparent during the crisis, according to Ms Laws.

“One of the lessons I’ve learned was the lack of understanding in the Health and Social Care department,” she said.

“Sometimes you would find people talking about care homes as the same as assisted living. There was a lack of understanding about what care homes are for.

“It’s not just about getting people out of hospital, it’s [their] home, not just about care.”

Councillors were also told how healthcare appointments, including for serious conditions, had still not reached pre-Covid levels, with concerns that the public is still putting off attending GPs and hospitals because of the pandemic.

“The activity has not yet gone back to pre-Covid [levels],” said Sam Hepplewhite, of Southwark’s Clinical Commissioning Group.

“In urgent care and A&E there’s a campaign to get people to come back.”

Fears have been raised of a ‘lost generation’ of children falling behind in their studies, with only pupils in certain year groups being allowed to fully return.

“The reality is, no school will reopen as normal unless social distancing comes to an end,” he said.

“Why did they not understand that three months ago? What have they been doing for the past three months?

“It feels like a massive indecision has taken over at DFE [department for education]. I don’t know who’s

to blame but the Secretary of State should take some responsibility.”

Two thousand laptops from central government have finally arrived for low-income pupils, according to the council - but now the authorities are faced with a complication, as some do not have internet access.

Cllr John called on prime minister Boris Johnson to show the same “passion” he had for expanding internet access as mayor to guarantee low-income Southwark children could get online for classes for free.

Even as we move out of national lockdown, the council’s boss could not yet say whether the town hall would ever have the power to enforce a local shutdown to keep the virus under control.

“I can’t tell you the extent of the measures we will be able to introduce will be,” he said. “We wait to see what the Government comes out with.

“Yes I’m frustrated [at lack of clarity]. Will it be only advisory, or will local lockdowns be a matter of fact?

That can only come from national government guidance.

“At the moment we don’t see the level of data sharing we need - it’s frustrating.”

Speaking exactly three months on from lockdown, and as Boris Johnson announced wide-ranging plans to reopen swathes of the economy on July 4, Cllr John said the pandemic still felt like something out of a disaster movie - echoing his words to the News on the eve of the crisis.

“Can you believe what’s happened over the past three months?” he asked.

“If you had said we’re shutting down the economy, isolating from loved ones, pubs, bars cinemas, theatres all closed, we’d have said all this just will not happen.”

However, he added that he did not fear a second wave of the virus, saying we were much better prepared this time around.

“This is still without precedent, this is still without parallel. But most people have responded amazingly.”

Residents call on Mayor to step in on plans next to graveyard

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Bankside residents’ group has called on the Mayor to intervene after offices, homes and shops were given planning permission on TfL-owned land in Bankside.

The scheme on the plot, referred to as Landmark Court, will see six buildings constructed with various heights on land adjoining Crossbones Graveyard and Memorial Garden.

Thirty six homes will now be built on the site, despite indications from Mayor Sadiq Khan that it could see up to 120 homes.

Included in the changes are “enhancements to Crossbones Burial Ground” and changes to the public access path to the burial site.

It has been left undeveloped since being acquired by TfL in the early nineties for use in the Jubilee Line extension in 1997.

Chair of Living Bankside, Amir Eden, has criticised the approved scheme for not providing “100 per cent affordable homes” to keyworkers.

In an open letter to Sadiq Khan, the group said: “In 2017 Living Bankside supported your justified call for a proper pay rise for key workers /

emergency workers.

“We indicated that by building genuinely affordable homes at Landmark Court in close proximity to two of the world’s renowned teaching hospitals, various schools, police stations and fire stations that together we can lead by example on supporting key workers and on how to address London’s housing crisis.

“Many of our Key Workers, such as our nurses, doctors, teachers, police and firefighters continue to find it increasingly difficult to live in London.”

The letter adds: “This scheme is surely one that should be called in.”

The ‘call-in’ would need to take place before June 29.

However, councillors had heard at a meeting earlier this month which approved the scheme that it could provide up to 1,700 jobs, and enable more people to enjoy Crossbones Yard.

A TfL representative told councillors that it was a “unique opportunity to transform a missing piece of Southwark Street.”

Meanwhile, the developer U+I, told the hearing that the burial site would be “protected and enhanced” as a result of the plans.

‘Colossal’ plans for Vinegar Yard

A planning meeting on Monday will consider the two proposals, one for Vinegar Yard itself, and another for land nearby.

The first of these would see the demolition of existing buildings at 40-44 Bermondsey Street, including the partial demolition of the Vinegar Yard warehouse to make a seventeenstorey tower.

The second proposes a mixed-use development on nearby St Thomas’ Street between Fenning Street and Snowsfields.

Tower block empty for five years

Campaigners protested outside Bermondsey’s empty Maydew House on Tuesday evening, over homes standing vacant in the borough.

The tower, on the Abbeyfield Estate, has been largely empty since residents were decanted for works, although it was used for temporary accommodation.

Campaigners say the block should be refurbished “immediately” to house council tenants during the pandemic, which has caused increasing homelenessness pressures in the borough.

But town hall officials say the next phase of the ongoing project to the tower was agreed just last week, to create 255 “top quality” council homes by 2023.

“There can be no good reason to keep empty council homes empty for any longer,” said Tanya Murat, of

Southwark Defend Council Housing.

“The Council first wanted to reduce the number of council homes in Maydew House by 42.

“Now they claim that there will be an overall increase in council housing on the Abbeyfield Estate, although we think the rents are likely to be higher.

“But five years after people were removed from Maydew House no building has happened. They should have just refurbished the flats five years ago and keep them as council housing.”

The council’s housing boss, Cllr Kieron Williams, said all 255 of homes following refurbishment would be life-long council homes.

“Alongside the refurbishment of Maydew we’re also building an extra 28 council homes by extending the neighbouring blocks, plus a brand new home for the Bede Centre,” he said.

“The scale of the work needed has made it a complex project, with Maydew having to be fully stripped

back to its frame and refurbished.

“However work is now well underway with the next phase agreed

by Cabinet just last week. We’re looking forward to handing over the keys to tenants in 2023.”

Protestors gathered for the ‘socially distanced’ demonstration outside Maydew House at 6pm Tuesday evening.

Their action comes after a demo in Elephant and Castle over empty homes, with campaigners decrying homes standing empty as “investment properties.”

An open letter sent to council leader Peter John, signed by Southwark Group of Tenants Organisations and the 35 per cent campaign among others, called for all currently empty council properties to be refurbished and opened up to the homeless.

It also radically called for the council to requisition empty properties left idle for longer than six months, and use them to house homeless families at council rents.

The proposals have been criticised by the Victorian Society, which campaigns on preserving historical heritage.

“Historic Bermondsey is at risk of being dwarfed by the colossal Vinegar Yard development, which is set for approval on 29 June,” said the society.

“Gutting a Victorian warehouse in the process, the domineering glass buildings will alter the area beyond recognition.”

But documents lodged with the council’s planning committee argue

that it should be approved.

“The proposal involves the provision of high quality office floorspace alongside a range of acceptable town centre retail uses,” states a recommendation before the council for the first scheme.

“The provision of new offices is fully supported and the provision of a modern, high quality offices is considered to be a benefit of the scheme and will facilitate a growth of employment numbers.”

Meanwhile, officers say of the second scheme: “The currently underdeveloped site would be capable of providing a substantial uplift in office and employment floorspace and could provide up to 1,508 new jobs through maximising the development potential of the site.”

Councillors are due to decide on the plans on Monday, June 29.

9,000 new applications for UC

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Nine thousand new applications for Universal Credit were made in Southwark since the start of the pandemic, leading to a huge surge in the number of people applying for emergency support while waiting for their first payment.

The stark figure, revealed in the most recent council papers, has risen from around 3,000 Universal Credit applicants in April - itself a tenfold increase.

The five-week wait is now the most cited reason for tenants to apply for the council’s emergency support scheme.

Since 2013 Southwark Council has given extra support to help residents in dire financial need - usually involving goods or services, such as food

vouchers, rather than direct cash.

The department had already been under pressure due to the transition to Universal Credit from 2016 onwards but now, after a huge rise in applications during the pandemic, its budget has had to triple to keep up with demand.

The council has ploughed an extra £2.2 million into the scheme in the hope it will help keep the most vulnerable afloat.

Between March 23 to the end of May, support workers took more than 10,000 calls requesting help. Many had been furloughed, were self employed and without income, or had been made redundant.

In total, nearly a million pounds has been awarded so far to more than 3,000 families across the borough - including nearly £88,000 to households in south Bermondsey alone.

Thirteen charged after drug raids

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council is considering whether directly to employ former rough sleepers as part of its homelessness strategy after the coronavirus pandemic.

All 138 former rough sleepers in Southwark are being accommodated in temporary accommodation, as a result of the pandemic, according to a council report.

At the beginning of the outbreak, councils were instructed to house rough sleepers in self-contained emergency accommodation to help prevent the spread of Covid among vulnerable groups.

The anticipated cost of housing those sleeping on the streets during the outbreak will reach around £1.8m, officials believe.

The majority of those have ‘no recourse to public funds’ (NRPF) – and so are banned from claiming welfare benefits because of their immigration status.

Most non-EEA national migrants with temporary permission to remain in the UK have the condition on their visa, which prevents them from claiming

most state-funded benefits, tax credits and housing assistance.

Others deemed under “immigration control” might also be barred from claiming certain assistance.

Of the 86 who have no recourse to public funds, 40 are from the European Economic Area.

The council is “currently exploring the possibility of employing directly some of these former rough sleepers who have No Recourse to Public Funds and are EAA nationals and encouraging partners to employ these people in an attempt to build future employment opportunities.”

Officials hope this will then save money.

“If this proves to be successful it will help the person to regulate their stay in the country and for the person to be sufficient without the need for the council to pay for accommodation and food,” states the report by head of housing solutions, Ian Swift.

“This work could also be repeated across Southwark Council and potentially with all partner agencies.”

There has been a whopping 517% increase in the average number of Universal Credit applications postlockdown compared with the period in the week before lockdown.

As at June 17, 356 homeless households in Southwark were living in shared accommodation, although 288 homeless households had been moved away from needing any shared facilities during the outbreak.

The council hopes that by August more lettings will be available, meaning that homeless families do not need to rely on shared accommodation.

“These pressures will continue to build going forward as a result of the economic decline across England as a result of COVID19,” the report starkly states.

In order for this to be tackled, officials say they need “substantial Government investment and structural changes.”

Among the options officials will lobby central government on include increasing the Local Housing Allowance, suspending the No Recourse to Public Funds cap for a year, and more funding to build council homes.

Warrants were executed in Lambeth, Croydon and Bromley. Megon Cargill, aged 37, from Stondon Park in Honor Oak, was charged with conspiracy to supply crack cocaine and heroin. She appeared at Croydon Magistrates' Court on Thursday, June 18, and has been bailed to appear at Inner London Crown Court on Thursday, July 16.

Also charged with cocaine and heroin offences were 39-year-old Christopher Gordon from Thornton Heath's Gillet Road and Akira Miller (27) from Orpington's Cowden Road, who have been bailed until July. Ripton Jones (37) from Oakdene Road in Orpington, 30-year-old Emma White from Wendell Court near Wansdworth Road, and Justin Darling (41) from Clapham Common, have all been remanded in custody.

Bianca Watson (24) from Palace Road in Streatham, and Tina Carter (56) from Ferndale Road in Brixton, and Kirk Reid (23) from Kimberley Road in Stockwell, were charged with crack cocaine

offences and remanded in custody.

Forty-one-year-old Michael Pearce, from Brixton's Hargwyne Street was charged with supplying crack cocaine. He pleaded guilty at Croydon Magistrates' Court and will be sentenced on July 16 at Inner London Crown Court.

Three more people were also charged by postal requisition - Kerrien Harris, aged 54, from Railton Road in Brixton, 41-year-old Marc Harris, of no fixed address, and Yaha Yalahow (19) of no fixed address.

Kerrien Harris and Marc Harris were charged on Wednesday, June 17, for heroin and crack offences, possession of criminal property, and possession of counterfeit currency. They appeared at Croydon Magistrates' Court on Thursday, June 18 and were remanded to custody to appear at Inner London Crown Court on July 16.

Yalahow was charged by postal requisition on Monday, June 15, with crack cocaine and heroin offences and appeared at Croydon Magistrates' Court on June 19.

Four others were arrested for a variety of drug, theft and breach of court order offences. Two have been bailed to return to police stations in early July, one has been remanded in custody and another received a caution.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Lordship Lane traders are appealing for a planned controlled parking zone to be postponed until next year to give their businesses a fighting chance of survival.

Southwark Council agreed to put the CPZ on hold during the pandemic, but now traders are keen to delay it until next year to give businesses and their customers more flexibility.

Michael Donovan, the owner of Roullier White and a member of the East Dulwich Independent Business Association, said Southwark Council’s business grants and support had been gratefully received and helped many closed shops weather the worst of the lockdown.

But now, as lockdown is eased and the furlough scheme begins to wind down, many business owners face the difficulties of adapting to the post-COVID landscape and need customers’ support more than ever.

“The next twelve months are going to be very tough for businesses,” he told the News.

“We have to pay back government loans and clear our debts with our landlords which run into many thousands of thousands, plus deal with a potential recession.

“We would implore Southwark Council to postpone this CPZ until after Christmas - a good Christmas this year is absolutely vital for the survival of many stores - when we can look at the practical implications together.”

He fears they will not be the last especially when even with a one metre social distancing rule some smaller restaurants, cafes and bars will struggle to be financially viable - without even taking into account the debt some have accrued.

In a short sighted move, numerous businesses have been refused rent reductions or holidays by landlords Michael describes as behaving ‘atrociously’.

“Businesses that have rented from these individuals for many years have found any appeal for decency and some kind of rent holiday or reduction swiftly and irrevocably rejected,” he said.

“They do not appear to grasp that,

should their tenant's business fail, they will find filling the space extremely difficult as nobody will be rushing to open a restaurant or retail business in the near future, so I believe that this is not only morally reprehensible but very short sighted of them.”

Despite these challenges, community support such as the East Dulwich Raffle the News has promoted, government and council support, and loyal custom, has been a lifeline.

“When I reopened Roullier White last week people came in to say hello and we were the first ‘proper shop’ - that did make me laugh - that they had been in since lockdown,” Michael said.

“They were upbeat, encouraging, supportive and kind and I had missed them badly. Many bought a soap or some hand sanitiser just to support the business and the sense of community was palpable.

“They really had missed us and were worried for our future.

“We must remain cautiously optimistic, stick together and support each other through this unprecedented period.

“To local residents, on behalf of the business community, I would like to say a huge thank you - they have been absolutely wonderful and we are truly lucky to be part of such a warm and generous community.

“I am confident that this support will not fade over the coming months and I hope that it will be enough to save every single one of our remaining businesses.

“The retail offer in East Dulwich has succeeded because of the mix of independent stores and services - our strength is our diversity and any closures will affect us all”

A planned CPZ was stalled during the outbreak, allowing more people to drive and pick up their shopping without using public transport.

East Dulwich resident Victoria Rennison set up a £1 per ticket community raffle to support local businesses - selling 20,000 tickets in six weeks to support traders and inspiring similar initiatives in High Streets across Britain.

Some businesses remained open mostly food and health shops with others reopening on June 15 with the relaxing of the lockdown.

A large number remain closed for now but anticipate opening in early July including bars, restaurants, the cinema, gym and beauticians.

The two-metre rule means virtually all restaurants are no longer financially viable but some could work around one metre.

Many shops - like Roullier White have been selling hand sanitiser and face coverings.

Others are open for takeaway, including Franklins, serving ‘posh fish and chips’ on Friday and Saturday evenings, offering a pulled pint of beer while you wait for collection.

This includes some pubs otherwise closed. The Lordship Pub has been providing click and collect or deliveroo dinners and drinks including a full Sunday roast.

It has been like Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities

I

have been loving the local history pieces in ‘The News’ and one of Southwark’s most famous sons, Charles Dickens, began ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ with “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”.

This resonates today, after an extremely tough three months since the lockdown began. The restrictions on people’s movements and activities were aimed at saving lives by reducing the spread of the virus. Most people have abided by the severe limitations and your extraordinary sacrifices have helped massively. However, the UK has still seen the worst death rate from COVID-19 in Europe with over 60,000 more deaths this year than in the last five years.

In Southwark the latest figures show that, sadly, almost 250 local people have lost their lives to the virus. My thoughts and prayers are with their families who have been through the worst of times imaginable, often unable to see their loved ones in their final days due to the lockdown.

Across the world, governments have taken different approaches to the virus. New Zealand locked down swiftly and the virus was contained with under 1,500 cases and 22 deaths.

In the UK, the Government has been forced to reveal that our Prime Minister did not bother to attend crucial meetings focused on tackling the spread of the virus.

Despite Ministers repeatedly bleating that they ‘followed the science’ leaks reveal that scientists wanted the lockdown sooner and one former government scientific adviser has suggested that our death toll could have been halved if Johnson had locked down just one week earlier.

Johnson acted late and dismissed the severity of the situation.

Dickens continued in his Tale

of Two Cities that “it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness”. I believe New Zealand’s leadership acted wisely.

Johnson’s government left our NHS with insufficient protective kit, failed to provide tests for people for the virus and wasted time and millions of pounds on a tracing app that has completely failed. They still call it ‘world beating’ without any sense of responsibility for this avoidable shambles.

Johnson hates scrutiny and now withholds the number of people tested daily for the virus.

This figure was being provided daily but has now been hidden for four weeks. Johnson also had to be pressured by the footballer Marcus Rashford into ensuring children got fed this summer. The campaign for free meals during the school holidays has finally forced a government U-turn and will benefit hundreds of local kids thankfully.

We have some great local providers of summer activities, including the Central Southwark Community Hub, who will have their work cut out for them once again this year as the impact of the virus will mean even more people with low or inadequate incomes and more people unemployed sadly. Those organisations will once again need your help and donations to meet demand.

Here in Southwark the crisis has also brought out the best of our amazing community spirit. A Tale of Two Cities ends with “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done” and I hope that the best of people is sustained now, with us all continuing to help one another. We have seen neighbours, friends, families, our council and local businesses all pulling together to support one another in this, the toughest of times and I hope that kindness and spirit is not lost once the lockdown lifts.

‘I can’t breathe’

I

can’t breathe. It is terrifying to hear this sentence, and to really feel what it means. It is repeated today in sorrow and rage at black lives stolen, and has become a call for action, growing louder in the unstoppable movement for justice and equality.

‘I can’t breathe’ is also heard in the anguish of asthma and lung disease. For Rosamund Adoo-KissiDebrah, a Lewisham teacher, it is a reminder of the suffering of her daughter Ella, who died at the age of nine, after repeated hospital admissions with asthma attacks linked to high pollution episodes.

The campaigns for health and social justice are linked. Black, Asian and minority ethnic people are more exposed to exhaust fumes, more likely to live in an inner-city borough and more likely to live on main roads. Air pollution is implicated in a higher rate of death from coronavirus too: health conditions caused by pollution make people more vulnerable to infection and lead to worse outcomes.

In 2017, with Southwark Green Party members, I put up air pollution monitors around the borough, including outside schools, King’s College Hospital and Southwark Pensioners Centre. Out of 20 sites, only two were within the legal limit.

Nitrogen dioxide levels at the bus stops on Tooley Street and Camberwell Green were more than twice the limit.

Justice in public health needs action at every level. Councils must make it easy and safe to walk and cycle, and help businesses to swap diesel vans for electric cargo bikes by providing depot space and start-up support. Across London, TfL’s Low Emission Bus Zones and Ultra Low Emission Zone have cut nitrogen dioxide levels by up to 40 per cent, but particulate pollution is still dangerously high, well above World Health Organisation recommendations.

At the national level, existing laws can be updated and enforced – for example, burning wood and ‘traditional’ coal in Southwark fireplaces is already banned (with some exceptions) by the 1950s laws creating Smoke Control Areas. While new legislation might be needed to cope with new forms of technology, the Clean Air (Human Rights) Bill drawn up in 2018 by Simon Birkett of ‘Clean Air in London’ and Baroness Jenny Jones makes a fundamental point: we all

Local businesses will need our support

D

uring lockdown many people have discovered new shops in their area and given vital custom to independent traders.

Rediscovering the joys of your local high street, whether in Bermondsey, Peckham, East Dulwich or Elephant and Castle, has been one positive in the last difficult few months.

Even before Coronavirus, Southwark’s small businesses were worried about an economic downturn due to Brexit uncertainty, and said rising business rates and operating costs left them vulnerable. They were also worried that congestion and lack of parking would see off customers from further afield who are increasingly shopping online.

As we move out of lockdown and back to a life of relative freedom, many are set to avoid public transport for the long haul.

Business grants, the furlough scheme, and any flexibility on rent is also winding down.

Our shopkeepers will need loyal customers more than ever to get through the next few months.

They, just like our nurses, carers and postal workers, are keyworkers.

During this pandemic they’ve kept us fed and, for those who live alone, provided the only contact with another person during lockdown.

Many pivoted their offerings - delivering food, providing meals for the NHS or the selfisolating, and making scrubs, face masks and hand sanitiser.

Sticking on the theme of animals, nature lovers in Rotherhithe have been eagerly tracking the progress of a group of seven cygnets on Surrey Quays Water.

Bermondsey’s link to Colston statue

The toppling of Edward Colston’s statue in Bristol sparked much discussion about the role of statues in the public realm, including in Southwark.

But the statue has a more unusual and direct link to our area too.

When the statue was recovered, an 1895 magazine was uncovered in the coat-tails, with a front page dedicated to Peak Freans Biscuit Factory in Bermondsey.

Those who had installed the statue had carefully inscribed the date, October 26, on the inside of the ‘Tit Bits’ humour magazine.

They were late hatching compared to other swan families - but were born just two weeks ago, and have since been inspiring almost daily updates from the area’s nature lovers.

“The cygnets were late compared to other swan families, but they’ve made it!” says one resident.

The little creatures have since been praised by spotters for their “perfect behaviour” for “showing off their synchronised formation.”

King’s: ‘Mistakes will have been made in crisis’

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Staff at King’s College Hospital were forced to find extra mortuary space for bodies during the worst of the coronavirus crisis, according to a stark review of its pandemic response.

The unprecedented speed and complexity of the crisis means “mistakes will have been made,” admitted the

Trust’s top boss in a briefing, who praised “highly-skilled” staff at the Trust for their heroic efforts during the emergency.

The Trust received its first Covid patient on March 3, and patient numbers increased rapidly after, the report by chief executive Prof Clive Kay reveals.

At the peak, hospitals run by the Trust were dealing with 552 Covid inpatients – with critical care wards battling to save the lives of 102 people.

Tragically, 499 patients at the Trust

have died as a result of coronavirus up to June 1.

But more than 2,100 coronavirus patients treated by the Trust were discharged, which Professor Kay called “a testament to the exceptional levels of care King’s staff have provided.”

“The pandemic led to a number of significant challenges which impacted on operational, clinical and workforce activity,” he said.

Number of women screened is still well below target

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk New NHS data shows the number of women attending cervical smear tests in Southwark is still falling short of the nationwide 80 per cent target.

Only 62.5 per cent of eligible women aged 25-29 were screened for cervical cancer between September and December 2019.

Women aged 50-64 were more likely to be tested after being written to by their GP - with 73.4 per cent taking up the offer.

London has failed to hit the 80 per cent target at any point since in 2016.

Attendance is now likely to have also been affected by the COVID-19 crisis, with many people avoiding the NHS altogether.

In a survey conducted by charity Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, around 13

per cent of people said they felt it was better to put their test on hold.

Smear test attendance is now at its lowest levels in the last 21 years in England. Across the UK, one in four women do not attend.

Among other recommendations, the charity has lobbied the NHS to make appointments more flexible - including evenings and weekends - and work with sexual health providers to reach more people.

The charity is also campaigning for workplaces to allow female employees the time off to get screened.

London Assembly member for Southwark and Lambeth, Florence Eshalomi, who is also Labour MP for Vauxhall, is backing its recommendations.

"Cervical screenings continue to save lives, so it is very concerning to see that testing rates are still falling below the national target, and in many cases actually getting worse. On top of this, we must also remain alert to how the COVID-19 outbreak may exacerbate this already worrying situation.

"This is why it is vital that we urgently see city-wide leadership and a renewed focus on this issue.

"Right now, the government can also play their part by looking at how screening can be made more accessible and ensuring that the funding and resources are in place to more effectively raise awareness and enable the NHS to reach more women."

He added: “Clearly, we have not done everything right, and where this has been the case we plan to reflect on the learning so that we can improve.”

Since May deaths and cases have quickly decreased across the Trust, which runs King’s College Hospital and the Princess Royal.

But the report paints a sharp picture of the extreme challenges faced by doctors and nurses battling the crisis over the past three months, around testing, PPE, and critical care capacity.

While never running out of vital PPE supplies, supply challenges meant certain masks and equipment were hard to find, states the report.

The chief executive praised the “sheer volume” of PPE donations by the local community, saying it was a “welcome solution” to some of the shortages.

Critical care capacity increased by 140 per cent in just five weeks across the hospitals, by requisitioning general wards for use to treat the most seriously ill coronavirus patients.

Staff who struggled with accommodation, because of shielding members of the family, were placed in subsidised hotels by the Trust, says the report.

King’s has also teamed up with South London and the Maudsley to provide psychological support to nurses and doctors who battled on the coronavirus frontline, it reveals.

Professor Kay warned that there will still be challenges ahead, with

the potential for “future surges” of coronavirus.

“King’s has been one of the largest treatment centres for COVID-19 in the country, and no doubt this will change the way we deliver services in the future,” he said.

“Our focus now is on restarting as many of our services as possible, whilst ensuring we are prepared for further surges of COVID-19 in the future.

“Although these are clearly difficult times, I am confident in the Trust’s ability to rise to the challenge.”

Piers Corbyn faces two charges

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Walworth-based housing campaigner Piers Corbyn has been charged by police after breaching lockdown rules in a series of protests over the UK's Coronavirus response.

Corbyn, a 5G conspiracy theorist and brother of the former Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, has been charged with two separate offences after appearing at rallies in Glastonbury and Hyde Park. He was charged on May 16 and May 30 and with offences under

the Health Protection (Coronavirus Restrictions) Regulations 2020.

The campaigner, from East Street, will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on July 24 and August 20.

In all, 24 people have been charged after a number of different protests across London since mid-May. Another protestor from East Street was charged with two counts of assaulting an emergency worker in a separate protest on June 6.

Cristopher Scott, aged 28, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on June 8.

The Art of Isolation Is Open To All

A Southwark artist is inviting people to share the artwork they have made during lockdown, for an exhibition which he plans to open next month.

Painter Rod Kitson is setting up a group show called The Art of Isolation in Surrey Quays, and is calling for entries from artists of all levels for the exhibition that he hopes will show the shared and individual experiences of lockdown, which can include drawings, paintings, sculpture photography and music, and digital art.

‘It’s all about the energy of what people have been making while in isolation,’ said Kitson. ‘It’s not a competition to see who’s the best artist, it’s all about the experience of creating something that the maker is proud of.’

The exhibition, which he hopes to hold in a pop-up gallery in Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, is open to all ages, and Rod aims to show all the work that is submitted. Social distancing regulations will be strictly followed..The artist revealed that work already submitted has included self-portraits, landscapes, portraits done on Zoom, sculptures, and craftwork such as knitting and sewing.

‘I love the range of things people have made in lockdown,’ he says. ‘This is all about celebrating the different ways we have reacted to these strange times, so I will not be rejecting any work on the grounds of style or technique.’

With no rejections, I suggested that this will be a lively show: ‘I hope to get the work tightly packed on the walls, something like the way they do it at

the RA Summer Exhibition, and at the Annual Open at the Southwark Park Gallery’ he says excitedly. ‘I like the idea that the work can be close together even if we have to stay apart.’

Entries are open until July 4th, and he stressed that it is an inclusive exhibition, not just for full-time artists.

‘I don’t want people feeling like they can’t submit work because they’re not a “professional” – this is about their own unique response; there is no right or wrong way to make art.’ Adding, ‘It’s not for me to judge people’s work, and the fact they have done it and are proud of it means it represents something to the person who made it – That is what is important about this exhibition.’

And he is inviting budding DIY fans to submit photographs of their recent work that have been their creative outlet during the lockdown. “I wanted to have the actual DIY projects in the gallery, but I suppose people probably don’t want to rip out work they have lovingly crafted in their homes and stick it in an art exhibition for a couple of weeks. ‘Yeah, mate, let me just rip out this kitchen I’ve installed and get a lorry to bring it over to you’. He laughs aloud at the thought.

‘It would be great to have a section of the exhibition dedicated to the pictures of people’s projects, even if they can’t submit them to the show in person, they can send me photos which I can print off.’

Kitson’s passion for this project that really does truly mean an Open Exhibition is almost touchable: ‘It’s not

just about fine art,’ he exclaims. ‘Other entries so far have included a pair of jeans whose knees have been patched up in red thread, a loaf of sourdough bread, a broken sledgehammer and my own motorcycle exhaust pipe… These all represent the energy of creativity, rather than something that is “perfect” or “beautiful” in an artistic sense. This is what this show is all about.’

Why an exhibition like this? ‘The idea came when I was renovating the exhaust pipe for my Vespa. I took it apart, repacked it and riveted it back together, all with the same pride and energy that I would use when making a piece of art… To me, it’s a beautiful object which has a story. The only reason it isn’t art is because it’s useful. So if I take it out of its useful environment and put it in a new context – a gallery – then it can be art.

The only downside is that now I can’t use my Vespa for a while!’

The artwork will be on show in the pop-up gallery in Surrey Quays, as well as in an online catalogue with descriptions of the work from the artists.

As well as the travelling Barbara also takes a lot of joy from the people she encounters: ‘Meeting and having conversations with many amazing people, allowing these experiences to teach me and help me grow and make special friends… The feeling of being on stage when you’re in the flow and feel like you’re expressing and drawing from all the different parts of your personality – when you feel you are honest, true, vulnerable, completely

fragile, as well as powerful, strong, in command, playful, sexy… When it all comes together, it is truly special. You can’t get it anywhere else.’

But with all those tremendous highs there are the negatives of being selfemployed, exhaustion being one of them: ‘As a highly sensitive person with a strong need for introversion I experienced a few near-breakdowns,’ begins Barbara. ‘Because I mostly play original music that doesn’t make much money I have to teach a lot to make enough money to sustain my life, and I don’t have a family or partner to help me. In London you have to commute so much and there’s so much time you have to spend doing tons of necessary things and admin when you are selfemployed. It can exhaust you beyond comprehension…’

That’s the day to day world of Barbara Bartz. Then the virus hit: ‘All my gigs got cancelled, but I am lucky that some of my teaching went online, so I am not immediately penniless…

The lockdown has some good sides for me, too: it forced a break from the crazy schedule, which I struggled with, so right now as much as I am worried, I am also enjoying the time I have to take care of my mental and physical health.

I am a bit of a thinker, and now in my 30s I feel a strong need for reflection, looking inside, re-evaluating things, changing habits. Things like that are generally very important for any highly sensitive and creative person, yet our hectic lifestyle often disables us to do so… But art doesn’t have depth if the artist doesn’t grow his/her own depth… So I try not to panic but turn all difficulties into good.’

To help get through these strange and difficult days Barbara has plans: ‘Do more teaching online, cut my spendings, start recording from home - I was always scared of technology but now I’ve borrowed a microphone and an interface and am about to start using them…’

And after we get back to some form of normality? ‘I hope I will be able to travel and play music. I hope people will be alright and the economy won’t crash… I hope the venues that promoted independent music survive, too… Things will be different but I don’t know how. Greenwich Musician on Life’s Highs and Lows

Being very musical at an early age, back home in Poland, Barbara got a place in State Music School at the age of seven where she studied until she was eighteen.

Then life imposed itself and after a Masters degree in Polish Language and Literature Barbara pursued photography for a few years. It was only when she moved to London that she was inspired to take up music once again: ‘For musicians this is a wonderful place to be, you are exposed to so much music and meet many people who transform you and your musical taste.’

For Ms Bartz music is a way ‘to explore and express yourself, your personality… It’s a path you undertake.

Barbara Bartz is a musician who lives between the historic Greenwich of the Royal Naval Hospital, the park and the Queen’s House, and the ‘modern and glassy’ Greenwich on the Peninsular. ‘I enjoy being trapped in between,’ she says. Betwixt the old and the new Barbara earns a living through ‘teaching violin and piano, playing on recording sessions and performing live with a variety of bands/ensembles,’ writes Michael Holland...

It’s like a calling. Music grows on you and in you… I love that about it. It gives your life a meaning… Maybe it is a spiritual path for a non-religious person like me.’

Performing as taken Barbara all over Europe, and thinks of playing Glastonbury with Dana Immanuel and the Stolen Band last year as a highlight: ‘It was very tough few days, both mentally and physically… But it was an EXPERIENCE!’ She cries.

From the archives: The News's 2010 interview with Sam King: 1926-2016

Mr King moved to Camberwell in 1948 after WW2, and later became Southwark's first black mayor, and the country's first Jamaican mayor Southwark’s first black mayor and co-founder of the world famous Notting Hill carnival Sam King passed away aged 90 on June 18, 2016.

Last week marked the four years since his passing and here’s is what Mr King told the News back in February 2010 when was awarded a Blue Plaque for his impressive life achievements: For a man who has spent his life fighting the established way of thinking Sam King seems in danger of becoming something of an institution.

His MBE in 1998 was followed by the unveiling of a Blue Plaque at the Herne Hill house Sam and his family have lived at for many years.

While both honours are usually the preserve of figures from the establishment, Sam King could never be described as such.

First coming to these shores in 1944 aged just eighteen to join the RAF in the Second World War, he was deported after victory.

Come 1948, he braved the Atlantic once more aboard the infamous Empire Windrush and seemed to live his life breaking boundaries from the moment he stepped off the boat.

On his arrival for a second time, Sam started working at a post office in Camberwell, where he stayed for much of his life and eventually becoming a manager.

Before becoming Southwark's first black mayor in 1983, he would also set up a programme to help fellow

migrants buy homes, work for the first paper for West Indians, and help organise the first Notting Hill Carnival.

So why, having fought for Britain in the Second World War with the RAF, did he respond to her second cry for help in 1948, when Britain desperately needed labour?

He told the News: "I'm from Jamaica.

I wanted my grandchildren to have an education and I thought I had to get back to England and in the end it worked out. My daughter went to Alexandria University in Egypt."

However in 1950s Britain, finding a way to get a roof over his head was Sam's most pressing concern.

Despite migrant workers coming to Britain's aid not everyone was welcoming to those from overseas.

Sam explained: "In 1950 in Stockwell I went with a man to see a house and there was a sign which said 'No Irish, no Blacks, no Dogs.'"

However, Sam did not see this as an obstacle rather another challenge to overcome.

Through a system which already existed in Jamaica he and others found a way to own property.

"We saved the money and collected it, but then one person gets that money.

Then at the end of about three years we have enough money for a deposit on a property."

Sam and his family were amongst the first black families to own a house in Britain, settling in Camberwell.

Being first seems to be a trend in

Sam's life. While working as a postman he delivered a good deal more than letters for the black community.

He was involved in organising the first Notting Hill Carnival and setting up the first paper dedicated to West Indians, 'The West Indian Gazette,' both of these involved the seasoned civil rights campaigner Claudia Jones.

However it was in becoming Mayor of Southwark that Sam King cemented his position as a pillar of the community in Southwark. Although typically for a man whose autobiography is entitled 'Climbing up the Rough Side of The Mountain' this was not all plain sailing: "The year after I became a councillor The National Front said if I became the mayor they would burn down my house and slit my throat. I said I'm not against the slitting of my throat because I'm a Christian, and believe we all have to go sometime and that I'd go to a nice place. But I said they shouldn't burn down the house.

"For about three months when I became mayor when I went out there was a policeman with me. But God is good because lots of people heard Sam King had become Mayor of Southwark."

The Blue Plaque unveiled means for years to come many more people will know what Sam King achieved.

The Blue Plaque scheme was set up by the News and Southwark Heritage Association in partnership with Southwark Council to recognise through votes from local people the borough rich past.

THE SIGHT of an eighteen-year-old in a light blue jersey walking off with the match ball was not what Millwall would have wanted to see last Saturday.

Louie Sibley was aged one when Wayne Rooney scored that famous goal against Arsenal in 2002, but he upstaged the former England captain at The Den. Sibley scored three times and could have had more. He gave Derby a deserved win and the only pity for him was that there weren’t any fans there to see it.

Sibley is sure to follow in Rooney’s footsteps into the England side. Sibley claimed the ball and the man-of-thematch award.

Not that England’s record goalscorer wasn’t prominent. In the first half Rooney completed 65 successful passes. The entire Millwall team completed 90. On a warm afternoon that was always likely to tell at some point, and Sibley had the quality to give his side a commanding lead before Jon Dadi Bodvarsson’s injury-time goal.

It seems like another era when Matt Smith was the one taking home the match ball after Millwall stunned a packed City Ground in Nottingham in March.

Smith headed the Lions in front last weekend. It was a brilliant goal. Shane Ferguson initially threaded a pass through to Jed Wallace breaking the defensive midfield line. He picked out Murray Wallace sprinting down the left

Youngster runs riot at empty Den wing and when the full-back looked for support he found it in Ferguson. The Northern Ireland international’s cross was sublime, and Smith’s finish, headed into the top corner past Ben Hamer, matched the delivery for quality. It was Smith’s thirteenth goal and he can already be happy with that return considering he hasn’t been a regular starter.

Derby are managed by a Dutchman and the team in blue rather than orange played like a Dutch side.

Rooney looked so comfortable, finding space so naturally and almost always playing a forward pass or one to shift the direction of attack. It was

certainly a good lesson for Jayson Molumby in the art of fine midfield play.

Nothing spectacular, just always trying to provide an option for a team-mate and choosing the best pass.

Millwall had just 23 per cent possession in the first half. They couldn’t hold on to the lead and Gary Rowett was disappointed with the way they defended.

Sibley got the equaliser, showing brilliant footwork to waltz past players in the box and slam the ball high into the top right corner past Bart Bialkowski.

Several times before he added two more Sibley made space for himself in the box and had he shot more accurately, or had Bialkowski not produced one excellent first-half save, he could have had six goals.

The Lions were more competitive in the second half, taking more initiative on the ball, but without a home crowd driving them on there was a spark missing. Several supporters gathered on the rise near the train tracks to peer

in between The Dockers Stand and the Cold Blow Lane end. That wasn’t much of a vantage point, and all they would have seen was Sibley’s first goal and Bodvarsson’s late consolation.

It was a flat restart to the season for Millwall, such a contrast to the feeling after their 3-0 win at Forest.

There are four home games left and without supporters they all look tricky.

Rowett believes the more technical sides will benefit playing away from home not having to face hostile crowds.

Swansea, the next opponents at The Den, backed that theory by beating Middlesbrough 3-0 at the Riverside Stadium later on Saturday. It will also suit the technical players of Blackburn, who are also now firmly in the play-off picture.

“We’re a team that thrives off the energy of the crowd in certain moments in the game and I think we found it hard when the game felt flat,” Rowett said.

“Derby navigated it better than us, with their technical players and slow build-up play.

“We started okay, scored a very good goal, we broke well, pinched it in midfield and showed good composure to put a good ball in for Matt Smith.

“But after that we conceded two very poor goals in my opinion. They were well taken by Sibley, and I’m sure Derby will be delighted with them, but they were very poor, very soft.”

Sibley was given too much space to drive in his second low into the left corner, before he scuffed in his third.

Bodvarsson’s close-range volley went in off the crossbar, but it was too little, too late.

Championship spending set to drop – helping to reduce inequality between Millwall and top clubs EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk A CONTRACTED transfer market in which clubs are wary of paying big fees and wages could “level the playing field” in the Championship, according to Millwall boss Gary Rowett.

Clubs will have no gate receipts for the rest of this season and potentially into the 202021 campaign meaning purse strings will have to be tightened amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Since the Lions returned to the second tier in 2017-18, the likes of Wolves, Middlesbrough, Bristol City and Nottingham Forest have shelled out over £10million on individual players. Millwall’s record signing is £1.5million Ryan Leonard.

But with so much uncertainty around football finances clubs are looking to cut costs, with the amount of money spent on players’ fees and wages, as well as agents’ fees, set to plummet.

Millwall made around £5.7million in match-day revenue in 2019, up by £0.5million from 2018. They will take a hit on that income, but clubs with bigger average home attendances will suffer greater drops.

The club agreed new contracts with Shaun Hutchinson and Mahlon Romeo before the suspension of football in March, and also signed Bart Bialkowski on a permanent deal from Ipswich.

deal for Jake Cooper earlier this month, an indication they have no intention of cashing in on their best players as Rowett tries to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion.

Even before the pandemic Championship clubs such as QPR and Birmingham were in financial difficulty. Blues stayed up last season despite a points’ deduction for breaching Financial Fair Play rules.

Millwall have been run prudently by John Berylson, though only turned a profit last year after seven years of accumulating loses, which shows that even with a sensible owner and structure how financially precarious it is for clubs outside the Premier League without vast TV revenues.

It has not yet been confirmed when the next transfer window will open and close.

Millwall had been planning to expand their recruitment structure into overseas markets, but that may have to be put on hold.

Rowett insists they will strengthen over the next window.

“There’s certainly going to be a levelling of the playing field of some sort,” Rowett said.

“I think from an FFP perspective and just in general teams can’t go on spending like they have done, it’s not sensible. Particularly with no gate receipts for the foreseeable future.

“So it’s going to be a slightly more level playing field in that sense. Our aim is to continue to strengthen, that doesn’t change.

Our aim is to continue to improve and to finish as strongly as we can this season.

We want to be a better team next season however this season goes.

“It’s got to be continuous advancement

and improvement rather than up and down for three or four years. That’s not sustainable.”

One player who may not be at Millwall next season is Aiden O’Brien.

Rowett praised the attacker for agreeing a deal until the end of this season after his contract was set to expire on June 30.

The likes of Charlton’s Lyle Taylor and Bournemouth’s Ryan Fraser have refused to play for their clubs as they don’t want to risk injury and jeopardise potentially lucrative free-transfer moves.

O’Brien has started just three times under Rowett since October, and the Millwall boss suggested he could seek more regular football elsewhere.

“Aiden's incredibly committed to this club, as we know anyway, he's been here a long time,” Rowett said. “With what’s going on with a lot of clubs and a lot of players I thought that was really good on his behalf to do that.

“Unfortunately he got injured in a practice match so we've just got to hope that he'll be able to play some part of the remaining games.

“At the moment, having spoken to Aiden, I just felt that we needed to get through to the end of the season and see where we are in terms of the squad, his personal ambitions of playing more.

“I think that is something that will get decided whenever this current season finishes.

“We’re quite fortunate in the sense that we haven’t got five, six players out of contract.

So it’s not a problem.”

Centre-back Alex Pearce could return, but Shaun Hutchinson may miss out after injuring his knee last weekend and needing treatment before continuing.

Ben Thompson and Aiden O’Brien have slight chances of being involved as the Lions aim to bounce back from last Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Derby.

Millwall cannot afford to drop points at Barnsley. The damage could have been worse last weekend when they started two points off sixth and only dropped one further behind. However, there are now five teams between the Lions and sixth place rather than two before the Championship restart.

There is often one team to bolt from the pack and Neil Harris’ Cardiff were the ones to step up the pace with their surprising 2-0 win over Leeds. Derby, in twelfth, are now level on points with Milwall and they too look a top outfit.

At the other end of the table, the Tykes are in desperate need of points. Gerhard Struber’s side made the ideal restart

to the league with a 1-0 win at QPR that lifted them off the bottom of the table. But they are still four points off Middlesbrough in 21st place.

The appointment by Boro of Neil Warnock is probably bad news for Barnsley. The north-east side were only going one way under Jonathan Woodgate, and owner Steve Gibson acted on Monday, sacking the former Middlesbrough defender. Warnock, 71, has eight games to keep them up.

Millwall also play Middlesbrough in the run-in and that is another one that now looks more difficult.

Rowett’s side were ragged at times against the Rams. If Pearce and Hutchinson miss out then there could be a debut for eighteen-year-old Hayden Muller. That would be a big ask for a youngster with no experience at this level, at such a crucial time in the season.

Up front, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Tom Bradshaw should be fresh after not starting last weekend. Matt Smith is also in a hot streak with four goals in two games.

There are lots of options in central midfield, with Shaun Williams pushing for a recall.

With games running out, Rowett has to make the right calls.

The Lions are still in the hunt for a topsix place but if they are out of the running with games left then Rowett will take the

opportunity to test some of the club’s youngsters.

Billy Mitchell, 19, who has already played senior competitive football, was joined on the bench against Derby last weekend by eighteen-year-old defender Hayden Muller.

The coaching staff also think highly of Abdul Abdulmalik. He is a seventeenyear-old attacker who has been called up to the England underage set-up.

Millwall reached the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup this season before losing 1-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Muller could even get his chance this weekend at Barnsley if Alex Pearce and Shaun Hutchinson are ruled out, though Rowett is wary of giving him a full debut before he’s ready.

“It would be difficult to chuck him in at the moment as one of two centre-backs in a back four,” Rowett said. “I think he’s

going to be a very, very good player.

“It would be easier with a young lad like that to put him into a back three or to play him right-back in a back four.

“He’s a very good young player. What you might find for these remaining eight games is that some young players are going to get an opportunity where they wouldn’t normally do so.

“While there are opportunities it’s a chance for somebody to show that they are ready. Sometimes with young players you don’t know.

“We’ve had quite a few of the young players training with us and they’ve all done really well and showed not only will they have a big part to play next

season, but this season they might have to do it earlier than normal.”

Meanwhile, Mason Bennett returns to the squad after not having permission to play against his parent club Derby.

Millwall have three games next week with Rowett likely to rotate his starting sides.

Rowett said: “Mason’s back and he’s a very good option to have starting. This weekend you’ve got to start thinking not only about Saturday’s team but Tuesday’s team and the following Saturday’s team. That’s really important.

“We’re going to have to utilise the squad and someone like Mason being back available is a big plus for us.”

Millwall could be stretched at Barnsley this weekend, with Pearce, Shaun Hutchinson, Ben Thompson and Aiden O’Brien all major doubts.

Defender Hayden Muller, 18, was on the bench last weekend against Derby and is likely to travel to Oakwell.

Boss Gary Rowett will be forced into reorganising his defence if Pearce and Hutchinson miss out.

The Lions play those eight games over 26 days with one of the smallest squads in the Championship.

“I’m sure the manager will say it as well, we’re going to absolutely need everyone in the whole squad,” Pearce said. “We know that. It is a small squad and there’s a very high volume of games in a very short period of time.

“Not everyone is going to play all these games, things are going to be challenging at times and we’re going to need to navigate through it. We need to try to keep everyone as healthy and fit as possible while trying to win as many games as we can.”

Players will be split between two coaches for the journey to Barnsley.

The squad and staff will wear masks at their hotel.

Pearce added: “Every club is in the same boat, facing the same challenges.

It’s different to the usual environment, of course it is. We’re going on the basis that, still socially distance where possible.

“We’re taking the right precautions and the testing’s been good, we’ve been doing it twice a week. That’s been going well.

“If we can take care of all that then we can look forward to the football, because that’s the most exciting part.”
