New grants for small businesses

editor@southwarknews.co.uk Businesses and market traders that have failed to get support during the lockdown or have yet to apply for help from the council can now apply for a new grant.

The council has launched a support scheme for local small businesses and market traders that did not qualify for

the government’s Small Business Grant, the Retail, Leisure and Hospitality Grant, or who were unsuccessful in applying for the Southwark Business Hardship Fund in April.

The new £3.4 million fund will be allocated on a rolling basis until the fund is exhausted. Demand for grants is expected to be high so businesses are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

They will have to meet the government’s Covid-19 social distancing guidelines to protect their workers and the public.

In addition, customers are asked to be vigilant, stay away from others and wear a face covering if in enclosed spaces where social distancing is not possible.

Over the past couple of weeks, large protests have assembled in Southwark and further afield, sparked by the horrific killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis.

“Myself and officers are appalled by what’s happened,” he said. “It’s shocking, it’s just a really distressing video, and I think that’s a view shared by everyone. We work incredibly hard, and there’s always more to do, for everyone in society to tackle inequality and racism. There’s definitely no place for it in the Met, and that’s what we stand for.”

But he added: “Our position is quite clear.

We’re encouraging people not to come out because they’re putting themselves and others at risk. I completely understand why people wish to protest, but we’re urging people to bear in mind the health risks.

“Which is why we have those regulations.”

Current rules ban gatherings of more than six

people from separate households – effectively making large protests unlawful.

Council leader Peter John has told the News that he and the local authority are in the dark over what ‘local lockdowns’ could entail.

When asked, Ch Supt Wingrove said it was a matter for the National Police Chiefs Council, which needs to formulate guidance before local officers can enact policy.

“The important thing for us is being consistent from the very start,” he said.

“Our approach has not changed, having that engagement throughout.”

Officers in Southwark and Lambeth are having to explore other avenues for that engagement, though, with Commander Wingrove praising the efforts of cadets and volunteers in community work.

“A lot of our officers have been getting involved in the clap for carers,” he said, by way of example. “We’ve got a police officer [in Peckham] volunteering at a food bank.

“We’ve had a lot of volunteers help us, but a lot of those examples won’t get noticed, because they’re random acts of kindness.”

A particular focus coming out of lockdown is high-police visibility in crime hotspots, such as near major stations or shopping centres in Southwark and Lambeth, said Commander Wingrove.

“What we’re doing is looking at areas where violent crime [happens] and making sure we’ve got a visible police presence there,” he said. “It’s about being in the right place at the right time. We’ve seen crime fall during lockdown – and we want to keep it down.”

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark’s top cop has told of his personal horror and disgust at the killing of George Floyd – but urged protesters not to take to the streets.

Ch Supt Colin Wingrove, the borough commander for Southwark and Lambeth spoke of the challenges faced by cops in policing the eased lockdown restrictions.

However, he said he remained committed to engaging and explaining to the public what they are allowed to do, rather than issuing fines.

The senior Met official added that his focus was on tackling violent crime hotspots as we unlock, with incidents of offences potentially rising as the public gradually gets its freedoms back.

But he refused to comment on the government’s handling of the crisis – including

such as hairdressers and nail bars, will remain closed, in line with current government guidelines, until July 4.

This also applies to the hospitality industry, meaning that pubs, cafes and restaurants are still restricted to takeaway or delivery services only.

Businesses can find further guidance on reopening safely, and posters to help manage social distancing, on the council website.

Grandparents Plus to get help from the council

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The charity Grandparents Plus is working with Southwark Council on a package of support for ‘kinship carers’ across the borough.

In addition to a new government grant for vulnerable families, the local authority and charity are giving more funding via their Kingship Response programme for carers with special guardian status.

Many are people raising young relatives in difficult circumstances while managing complex relationships with the birth parents.

The charity’s chief executive, Lucy Peake, said: “Kinship carers have specific concerns and needs at this time.

“As an already vulnerable and poorly supported group, the coronavirus is putting them and their families under more pressure, from increased health concerns, looking after children at home, increased isolation due to limited digital confidence, and reduced access to local peer support.

“Many of these families are in the vulnerable age range and are scared about what might happen to their children if they get ill.

“They need tailored advice, practical resources and support from people they trust, which is why we are delighted to be able to extend our services to support families in Southwark during the health crisis and its aftermath.”

The Great Get Together this Sunday on air Nine hours of radio broadcast live across multiple local stations, with music, theatre and comedy

Welsh Choir, comedy from the Country Mile, performances from the London School of Samba, interviews with special guests and much more, providing something for everyone.

Presented by radio hosts George Allowit and Mirella Kumbi, locally based radio station Resonance 104.4 FM, and online community station K2KRadio, will broadcast simultaneously on the day. And with more stations yet to be announced, the event promises to connect local communities across the country.

Over the last three years, since the tragic death of MP Jo Cox, murdered by a far-right terrorist in June 2016, The Great Get Together has brought together a huge gathering of neighbours, friends, and those in our communities across the country who wish to celebrate what we have in common. Last year over 12,000 people took to their streets to drink, eat and enjoy a whole host of entertainment.

Organised by Bankside Open Spaces Trust's (BOST) annual street party, the SE1 gathering could easily have gone the way of so many of the local events and festivals this year and just not happened.

However, radio has come to the rescue, allowing the street party to be enjoyed from the comfort of living rooms, kitchens or gardens, without breaking any social distancing regulations.

For organisers, with the pandemic placing further emphasis on the importance of community, this year's event was more appropriate than ever.

Radio is a perfect way, they say, to share stories and show support during this tumultuous time. Nine hours of radio will broadcast live across multiple local stations, featuring music, theatre and comedy.

Despite the party having been moved online, the much-loved festivities remain. Programme highlights include a virtual dog and cat show, and celebrity contributions from Olympic medallist and local Tom Daley, as well as BBC Radio 4’s Martha Kearney. There will be music from Brothers Ignatius and The

Strict measures to help Thousands of non-essential retail businesses such as clothes and homeware shops across England have taken advantage of the opportunity to reopen to members of the public since Monday, June 15. Some shops and retailers were able to provide an online service during the closures to help tackle coronavirus. However, many were unable to do so.

Retailers have now used the comprehensive UK Government guidance made available to help high street businesses prepare to reopen their doors in a way that is safe for their employees and customers, such as ensuring social distancing. Today, we look at what measures are in place to make it safe for customers to visit reopened businesses.

BLEND COFFEE Co directors Oli Crawley and Tom Jennion have taken steps to allow them to safely reopen their independent coffee shop at Portslade in Sussex.

They have implemented a series of measures based on UK Government advice so they could reopen safely for both staff and customers.

They said: “Blend Coffee Co has two directors, and we employ a further three members of full-time and part-time baristas.

“Only the directors have returned to work to alleviate any pressure on our barista team feeling they need to work; this also allows an operational analysis of all our new protocols to ensure they are efficient and safe.

“Our primary concern is to keep people safe, so to make sure our coffee shop

was ready to be reopened we implemented a number of safer working measures.”

These new measures include: n A deep clean of the shop prior to reopening. n Implementation of a new ordering layout. n A new policy stipulating zero customers inside the store. n The till system has been moved to the front of the shop, with orders automatically being sent to the back of the house for preparation. n A new collection process which means customers will be a safe distance away (behind signage) whilst ordering. There is a waiting area outside which adheres to social distancing, and

once their order is ready, the customer can safely collect from the collection point. n Only accepting card payments. n New cleaning schedules of the premises and all areas which come into contact with both customers and staff. n Pre and post-shift cleaning.

Oli and Tom said: “This plan was developed after we undertook a risk assessment and analysis of the premises to ensure that customer-staff interaction could be maintained and sustained in a safe manner.

“We ran a test prior to reopening to ensure that our new measures would work and allow us and our customers to stay safe.

“We have accessed the Job Retention Scheme as it was impossible to offer work to our staff in the circumstances.

“The scheme enabled us to keep all staff on the payroll, something we would not have been able to do without it.

“Our three baristas remain on the furlough scheme until it is safe to reopen at our full capacity.

“We have also accessed the Retail and Hospitality grant which will help us with our lease payments and overheads.”

Building on this, reopening non-essential retail is the next step towards restoring people’s livelihoods.

Shops can only reopen once they have completed a risk assessment, in consultation with trade union representatives or workers, and are confident they are managing the risks.

The Menace, run by volunteers, posted on twitter that its team was devastated by the havoc wreaked on both its sites in the last few weeks.

"We love football and changing young people's lives," the club said in the first of a series of heartfelt tweets.

"The last few months have been really difficult for everyone.

"However we are hurting so much with the massive increase in vandalism on our two sites. Please stop.

"It's not okay to break into our ground, have a picnic on the main pitch and then leave your litter.

"We spend many hours every week maintaining the main pitch to provide a quality surface for the best amateur players in south London.

"It's not okay to climb on fragile roofs and smash up expensive goalposts.

'We pay for this equipment from the subs our players pay."

Rubble has also been dumped on the ground - which the club has had to pay to remove - and advertising boards have been ripped down and turned into makeshift skate ramps.

The club's training ground has also been left badly damaged by cars being driven on the private pitch.

The club added: "We usually prefer to keep issues like this private but it has become so bad that we need the community's help.

"We can't be there 24/7. If you see suspicious activity, please let us know via DM or 07531 876 736.

"Despite these setbacks, we still love the game!

"If you are interested in helping out when football restarts, then please do get in touch.

"We always need more volunteers."

The pitches are among several green spaces that have been blighted by rubbish from picnics, BBQs and illegal parties.

Nunhead’s link to Titanic

The testimony of a wireless operator from Nunhead who survived the sinking of the Titanic is back in the spotlight as debate rages over whether to rescue his radio system from the rapidly deteriorating shipwreck.

Titanic crew member and wireless operator Harold Sydney Bride made headlines around the world with his first-hand account of the disaster to the New York Times.

As he swam for his life, Bride had watched the so-called ‘unsinkable’ ship go down on her maiden voyage in the early hours of April 15, 1912.

What remains of the radio equipment he used to send out Titanic’s distress calls is now the source of an impending legal challenge and battle over the future of the disintegrating wreck.

In May, a US district judge gave the go-ahead to a salvage firm to rescue the radio equipment, even though salvagers would have to cut open the ship’s decaying hull to do so.

The decision has now been challenged by the federal government - with an appeal expected in the court later this year.

The Nunhead-born operator, then aged 22, was one of the last to use the machine and his messages are credited with helping launch the rescue mission.

Bride, a Marconi International Marine Communication Company employee, was part of a team including senior operator Jack Phillips responsible for receiving and transmitting messages to and from other ships, using then state-of-the-art radiotelegraphy.

Much of their work involved transmitting messages between first-class passengers and their friends and loved ones back home, as well as monitoring weather reports and iceberg warnings.

"Hello Boy,” said one one of the happier messages recorded. “Dining with you tonight in spirit, heart with you always. Best love, Girl."

That night the Titanic’s fate was sealed when it hit an iceberg south of the Newfoundland coast, at around 11.40pm, sustaining 300-metres of damage as the ice raked its starboard side.

The first Bride knew of the impending disaster was when he reported for duty up to relieve Phillips on the night shift, and the incredulous captain told him: “We’ve struck an iceberg and I’m having an inspection made to tell what it has done for us.” In the hours following the operators sent out increasingly frantic calls as the ship’s compartments filled with water.

The first few read: “Come at once. We have struck a berg. It's a CQD, old man,’ to ‘we have struck an iceberg and sinking by the head’.

The last recorded message, sent by Phillips in the ship’s final minutes, read: ‘Come quick. Engine room nearly full’.

“Every few minutes Phillips would send me to the captain with little messages,” Bride recalled. “They were merely telling how the Carpathia was coming our way and gave her speed.

“I noticed as I came back from one trip that they were putting off women and children in lifeboats. I noticed that the list forward was increasing.

“Phillips told me the wireless was growing weaker.

The captain came and told us our engine rooms were taking water and that the dynamos might not last much longer.”

It took two hours and forty minutes for Titanic to sink. The water had finally reached their deck and was swirling into the operating room when the

captain released Bride and Phillips from duty, telling the crew: “You can do no more. Abandon your cabin.

Now it’s every man for himself.”

Bride recounted how Philips ignored the captain's advice and went down with the ship, desperately trying to send out information to their rescuers.

By now passengers were frantically trying to launch the final lifeboats before they were all sucked under.

Bride managed to jump onto an upside down one just as a huge wave swept it out into the open water, finding himself trapped inside.

“I remember realising I was wet through, and whatever happened I must not breathe, for I was under water,” he said.“I knew I had to fight for it and I did. How I got out from under the boat I do not know, but I felt a breath of air at last.

“There were men all around me - hundreds of them.

The sea was dotted with them.”

He said the shop looked like ‘a duck that goes down for a dive’ as she sank. He swam with all his might.

Eventually a hand pulled him out the water and into him into a lifeboat. He was one of the lucky few.

When The Carpathia arrived two hours later most of those in the water had already drowned or frozen to death. It is estimated more than 1,500 perished.

Despite injuries including frostbite, Bride continued his work as an operator aboard the Carpathia’s three day journey to New York, relaying messages from panicked relatives.

Bride was reportedly paid $1,000 for his scoop and was regarded as a hero. During his life, he was uncomfortable with his celebrity.

He carried on working as a maritime wireless operator during the First World War, and in 1920 married in Glasgow, later having two children. He died in 1956.

Two haunting images from the disaster would stay with him: his friend and colleague going to his death trying to man the wireless, and the musicians who played into the cold night.

“The way the band kept playing was a noble thing,” he said.

“I heard it first while we were still working wireless, when there was a ragtime tune for us, and the last I saw of the band, when I was floating out in the sea with my lift belt on, it was still on deck, playing ‘Autumn’.

“How they ever did it, I cannot imagine.”

Man stabbed after ‘group fight’ in SE5

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A 26-year-old man was seriously injured after being attacked in a 'group fight' in Denmark Hill in the early hours of Monday.

Police were called after the victim arrived in hospital by car shortly before 4am on June 15.

He had suffered stab wounds and was in a critical condition.

By Tuesday he had improved enough for officers to tell the News his life was no longer in danger.

Those investigating believe he was attacked during a group fight at a home in Denmark Hill.

Three men have been arrested on suspicion of GBH with intent; one aged 24 and two aged 23.

Council audit on streets to be renamed

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council will undertake an audit of the borough’s statues and street names to explore those with links to slavery and colonialism.

The work will be led by cabinet member Cllr Johnson Situ, and echoes moves by other London boroughs.

It could see road names changed and statues with links to slavery and colonialism removed.

In a newsletter to residents across the borough, the leader of the council Peter John said: “I promised you last week that I would share with you the details of our plans to respond to the killing of George Floyd and the injustice and racism experienced by our BAME communities.

“I have asked Cllr Johnson Situ, Cabinet Member for Growth and Planning, to lead our work in this area under the name ‘Southwark stands together’.”

He said that it would include “an

It is these connections which will be explored under the council’s review to identify street names and statues with negative links to slavery and colonialism, to instead promote “more diverse figures.”

Council officials say they do not yet have a list of locations being reviewed under the anti-racism audit, with a report on progress due “in the late summer.”

A map created by the Museum of London Docklands, alongside Southwark Council, revealed areas with slavery links to commemorate the bicentenary of abolition in 1807.

Locations listed included Hay’s Galleria, a former wharf, for the quantities of coffee and tea imported

there, often produced by slaves.

Nearby Tooley Street once was the site of many sugarhouses, to refine the sugar grown on plantations, although none exist today.

Historic street names which showed this link have already disappeared, such as a “Sugar Loaf Alley” in the parish of St Olave’s, and multiple pubs in Southwark called the Sugar Loaf.

Guy’s Hospital and Guy Street are both named after Thomas Guy, a shareowner in the slave-trading South Sea Company, which also features on the map.

Colonial links are also apparent in Bermondsey’s Jamaica Road, named after Britain acquired Jamaica as a colony from the Spanish in 1655.

The road was part of the route connecting the docks and warehouses in Southwark with those in Rotherhithe, Deptford and Woolwich, significant for the Elizabethan slave trade.

But its name could also come from the name of the Jamaica Tavern, often visited by Samuel Pepys, who himself sold a person into slavery.

Separately, other possible suggestions could include Flockton Street in Bermondsey, which may be named after Thomas Flockton, ‘reimbursed’ on the abolition of slavery for his 106 slaves from Jamaica.

But the audit may prove a chance to highlight examples of the borough’s positive contributions to the cause of abolitionism.

Among them could include Lancaster Street, where the British and Foreign School Society was founded in 1798.

Inspired by the work of abolitionist Thomas Clarkson, the school was active in educating former slaves.

However, it is not clear which street names or sculptures could be removed; or which new historical figures could instead be highlighted.

The statue to Guy’s Hospital founder, Thomas Guy, will be removed over his profiteering from the slave trade, as first highlighted by the News last week.

A statue to Guy stands in the Guy’s campus of King’s College London, next to the hospital he founded with a fortune he made largely from shares in a slave-trading company.

Another statue to Sir Robert Clayton, which stands outside St Thomas’ Hospital, will also be removed.

Clayton was a member of the Royal African Company, which shipped more African slaves to the Americas than any other insitition during the Atlantic slave trade.

In a joint statement, King’s College London and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust said it had a duty to address the legacy of colonialism and slavery.

“We absolutely recognise the public hurt and anger that is generated by the symbolism of public statues of historical figures associated with the slave trade in some way,” it said.

“We have therefore decided to remove statues of Robert Clayton and Thomas Guy from public view, and we look forward to engaging with and receiving guidance from the Mayor of London’s Commission on each.”

It comes after London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced a commission to review London landmarks over their links to slavery, pushing for those with clear links to be renamed or removed.

However, the hospital said it would

not be dropping the name of ‘Guy’s Hospital’, despite removing their founder’s statue.

A petition, signed by thousands, had called for the hospital to be renamed, following a campaign called ‘Topple the Racists’.

Some, however, have pointed to arguments about the role of the South Sea Company, saying it presents doubts over whether Thomas Guy’s statue should be removed.

An opinion piece in the student newspaper for King’s College London claims that research presented by Elizabeth Donnan in 1930 shows that Guy made his money before the company was involved in the slave-trade, meaning it is unfair to characterise him as benefiting from it.

The Trust’s statement added that the statues would be removed, because “we see the pervasive and harmful effects of structural racism every day through our work.

“Black people have worse health outcomes, and this inequality is one of many ways racism permeates our society.

“We are fully committed to tackling racism, discrimination and inequality, and we stand in solidarity with our patients, students, colleagues and communities.”

The removal is expected to take several weeks due to the sizes of the statues, the Trust added.

The move has been sparked by Black Lives Matters protesters dramatically tearing down a statue to slave trader Edward Colston in Bristol, and dumping it into the docks.

Racist claims at Dulwich school

The school’s head teacher, Sally-Anne Huang, has also received a petition calling for its curriculum to be ‘decolonised’.

It is is one of several top educational establishments across the country to be interrogated over a perceived failure to tackle discrimination after a campaign started by twenty-one-year-old Tiwa Adebayo, an ex-pupil of Haberdashers’ Aske’s in Hertfordshire.

Grenfell campaigners also joined the event, held on Sunday, June 14, which coincided with the third anniversary of the disaster.

Demonstrators marched through the park to Peckham and held a sit-down protest and rally. Organised by Stand Up To Racism, campaigners to address the crowd included Naima Omar.

Local Lib Dem councillors William Houngbo, David Noakes, and Adele Morris were also in attendance.

The peaceful protest saw no flare ups or violence - and looked a world away from the shocking scenes unfolding in Westminster and Waterloo throughout the weekend.

She took action after she and a group of BAME friends who attended private schools began sharing their own experiences.

Soon around 300 black students had signed her letter to the Independent Schools Council detailing alleged racist incidents, and of failures to appropriately punish those responsible and safeguard students from future abuse.

The letter to JAGS references several alleged incidents including claims a pupil described black and white people as 'more different to each other than different dog breeds’.

In a statement posted on the school’s website, Ms Huang responded: “We have all been moved by the shocking death of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests across the world.

“At JAGS we are committed to inclusivity and diversity across our community and have a responsibility to all our BAME students to ensure they are heard and valued.

“Over the past few years, we have begun to address the curriculum to ensure that it covers race and race issues, and we acknowledge that we must continue to develop and reflect upon these.

“We understand also that these measures are a starting point and should not solely be reflected in the curriculum but across all aspects of our school community and life.

“We are working closely with our pupil body to address this, including integrating our equality policy with a new diversity policy.

“Over the past week, we have engaged with pupils, families and alumnae asking them for their feedback and welcome this opportunity to engage and implement positive change.

“All allegations of racism are taken extremely seriously and JAGS welcomes any further information regarding any incidents so that we can investigate fully.

“We are committed to ensuring that JAGS is positively antiracist.”

It is reported that Andrew Banks, from Stansted, had attended the protest to ‘protect’ statues but found himself caught short after downing sixteen pints.

Brave Tony is over halfway

The abused five-year-old has raised over £400k in his walk

As the News reported last week, fiveyear-old Tony Hudgell has set himself the challenge of walking ten kilometres throughout June as he learns to use his new crutches and prosthetic legs.

Tony, who lives in Kent with his adoptive family, was on life-support at Evelina London when he was just weeks old and continues to receive care from the children's hospital.

He has now walked more than five kilometres and celebrated reaching this milestone with a very special cake sent from Evelina.

Medics who cared for Tony during his recovery have also sent messages of support. Consultant Mr Kokkinakis said: "Your commitment and discipline and challenging target inspires us all."

And Ms Flanagan, a nurse who cared for him when he underwent his amputations, told him: "I can remember before your operations how nervous you were, but look at you now.

"Walking so well and growing up so fast. Thank you for everything you're doing for us. We're all so proud of you."

over the summer break and provides a lifeline to some families over the summer break.”

The fund will support the existing seven holiday hubs in Southwark and sixteen hubs in Lambeth, with the aim of setting up more across both boroughs.

The Department for Education, which publishes statistics on attendance weekly, said it did not currently have plans to release a local authority breakdown.

Only half of schools opened to the first year groups brought back into education - reception, year one and year six.

Meanwhile, it is believed four in ten students are not in regular contact with their teachers - according to a study from the National Foundation for Educational Research.

As the News has reported, Southwark Council has said it would support parents who chose not to send their kids back to the classroom before September amid safety fears.

Protective measures at schools include staggered start times, socially distanced queues and classrooms, temperature readings on arrival, and hand-washing stations in the playground.

photographer captures crisis through letters

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A Rotherhithe photographer has captured SE1 residents and their heartfelt letters to the people and things they love and miss, as part of a new photoseries chronicling life during the Coronavirus outbreak.

Akiko DuPont shot the series of portraits during lockdown; asking those featured to pen a handwritten letter instead of an email or text.

The results are heartbreaking and hopeful in equal measure. Several faces will be well-known to our readers.

“I wanted to reflect on how people were during lockdown and writing a letter is different to an email as it’s much more personal and people really expose themselves more. They’re more vulnerable,” Akiko explained.

“They are really exposing themselves to strangers by taking part and although many of their letters were filled with

sadness as time went on it became clear that they were also filled with love and hope for the future.

“I hope the project will help people in future look back at this time and see what life was like.”

Akiko met most of the participants for the first time when she took their photograph and read their letters.

As word of mouth spread about the idea that she had originally started with friends, she was put in touch with more people keen to take part.

“They vary from a seven-year-old to someone who experienced WWII, from someone writing to their unborn family, to those whom have lost their loved ones because of the virus," she said.

"They’re from born and bred Londoners to those who have come from across the globe. These are the stories of what’s happening in the hearts of Londoners letters from your city.”

Emilie and her eldest son Ismael both wrote letters.

He wrote his to Mother Earth, and she wrote to all the underdogs - people struggling with mental health problems, disabilities, bullying, and people in prison. Ismael said Coronavirus had led him to reflect more on how his actions affected the planet. "I feel your pain and I can only say that 'you are not alone'," Emilie writes. "This situation has made us one so please keep hoping. It won't be easy but we will get through this."

Bell’s portrait was taken 50 days after her mother had passed away from COVID-19.

The owner of Bell’s Cafe in Bermondsey Spa Gardens wrote of the devastation caused by the virus. “Most tragically you have taken my one and only beautiful mother forever… every day we pray you will be forever be eliminated before you take any more lives and destroy other families around the world.”

Mayflower manager Sueleen and her partner Matt met while working in the pub seven years ago.

Fishmonger Russell chose to write his letter to ‘liberty’, saying this was what the virus had taken from us all during lockdown.

“I wanted to write a letter and say, don’t go, we need you and you’re

precious,” he explained.

In his missive he wrote: “So many people have fought for you and cried and died for you, please come back, I miss you so much and a life without you is one of uncertainty and bleakness.”

They wrote to four close friends they met through the Mayflower, who now live in different parts of the world. A special birthday party where they planned to reunite had to be put on hold due to COVID-19.

“The fun and laughter we shared has brought back many good memories,” they said after taking part in the project.

“When all is safe we are so looking forward to seeing so many of our friends and family, and feel so lucky we have such wonderful beings in this world.”

CoVID deaths by area

josh@southwarknews.co.uk At least 241 people have died as a result of coronavirus in Southwark in three months, according to newly-released data.

The stark stats from the Office for National Statistics show that Covid-19 was either the main or contributing cause in more than 40 per cent of deaths in Southwark in the three months from March 1 to May 31.

However, both of our neighbouring boroughs Lewisham and Lambeth recorded slightly higher standardised rates of coronavirus fatalities, when accounting for population differences.

The stats for Southwark are also broken down into 34 areas across the borough, revealing which local areas have been hardest hit by the tragedy of coronavirus deaths.

Deaths are those where Covid was listed either as an "underlying cause" or "contributory cause" on a death certificate.

These areas, called MSOAs, roughly correlate to geographic areas within the borough.

The worst affected area logged in the data is designated Queen’s Road Peckham, which saw 25 residents lose their life from the virus in those three

months.

London Bridge and Bermondsey West saw 24 deaths from the illness, while Surrey Quays saw 15 deaths.

All of the 34 areas within the borough recorded at least one coronavirus death in those three months.

Bermondsey East, which encapsulates a significant section of Jamaica Road and Bermondsey Spa, recorded the fewest Covid-fatalities, with one person losing their life in three months.

Statisticians believe that areas with higher levels of deprivation are seeing higher Covid-19 death rates.

However, while London was initially hit hard by the virus, it is now experiencing lower death rates than many other parts of the country.

“Although London had some of the highest COVID-19 mortality rates in the country during March and April, it is now experiencing lower mortality rates compared with most areas,” said Sarah Caul, of the ONS. “Meanwhile, people living in more deprived areas have continued to experience COVID-19 mortality rates more than double those living in less deprived areas.

“General mortality rates are normally higher in more deprived areas, but COVID-19 appears to be increasing this effect.”

Raymond suddenly passed away ‘having already beaten coronavirus’

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The family and friends of a woman who died unexpectedly from a heart attack at just 53 have paid tribute to the ‘very special and sweet soul’.

Camberwell based Mia, known as ‘Tia Mia’ - Aunty Mia - passed away on May 25 after suffering a cardiac arrest. She was a mother of one - Daniela - and had two grandchildren.

Although her health had declined in recent years due to suffering epilepsy caused by a brain clot, she passed away without warning; leaving the family struggling to cover funeral costs.

At the time of her death Mia had been adapting to a new way of life with serious health conditions that left her struggling to perform many basic daily activities

without help.

Stephanie Almeida, a family friend who set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for her funeral, wrote: “She was under 5ft but a true reflection of "’the best things come in small packages’ - full of life, fun and love! She loved her family, a good party and had a fine eye for art.

“She was the sweetest mother figure I had known; adored all children and always put others first.

“She accepted me into her family at a young age and never failed to make me giggle or embrace me with the tightest and warmest hugs.

“She stood for what she believed in and for those that she loved.”

Raymond Kipre, aged just 63, passed away suddenly in hospital on May 29 - despite having apparently beaten coronavirus and coming out of a coma.

The sudden loss has devastated the family, says his daughter, Donna, who remembered her dad as a man who would do anything for his friends and loved ones.

“Dad was so loving,” she said. “If he had friends who were having problems he would literally make sure he was there for them. If they didn’t have money he would give it to them, he would lend them a bus pass so that they could find a job. He would make your problem his problem and wouldn’t stop until it was solved.”

Warning signs first appeared when Raymond came back from his work as a chef to his home on Southampton Way, saying he felt extremely tired.

After a couple of days, he began to lose his voice, found it difficult to walk and didn’t have enough oxygen in his body. He was rushed to hospital for treatment - and while he had seemed in relatively good health for several days, slipped into a coma and was taken to ICU to be put on a ventilator, says Donna.

“They said, ‘you might never see him again’”, she tells the News. “He’s got kidney failure. But he slowly started to improve. He was there for two weeks and by week three he was

good again.

“He beat Covid-19. He was so happy, they took him off the ICU and to a normal ward.”

But days before Raymond was due to be released on June 4th, Donna had a call to say that her father had passed away suddenly.

“They don’t know what he passed away of, it was such a sudden death.” she says.

An investigation will now be carried out into the father-of-four’s passing.

Devastatingly, relatives had planned on throwing a surprise party for the Peckham local, even refurbishing his flat while he was in hospital.

And plans had been made before Raymond’s death to meet daughter Natasha for the first time this year, and his grandaughter too.

“It was just the shock. We’d been planning a party for him, a BBQ, we’d bought some furniture so it was all

different to when he left.”

In the wake of Raymond’s death, a fundraiser has been set up to help cover funeral costs. The family hope to have a proper send-off for the chef in late August.

Anything left over would go towards Raymond’s youngest son, who is aged just eighteen. “If we do get more, we’ll do something for my younger brother,” says Donna. “He’s not got a father figure in the family. He would know that Dad’s gone, but he’s got something for his future.

“Dad was always giving advice to my brother. He was always worried about my brother growing up as a young black boy in Peckham, he wanted him to do well.”

I just callled to say....

Southwark-based singer Helen McDonald is entertaining older people with jazz singalongs down the telephone.

The leading vocalist with Hi-life ensemble Yaaba Funk is performing jazz standards and classic torch songs to care home residents and OAPs at home.

Renditions so far have included Lady Day’s God Bless the Child and the vocal acrobatics of Ella Fitzgerald’s How High the Moon. She is also taking requests and singing along with participants.

“This project is so important for our elders, who have had fewer opportunities to be with their loved ones during lockdown,” Helen said.

“The telephone jazz singalong offers a joyous and anxiety-releasing interlude from the daily void that lockdown and social distancing can bring.”

Her initiative is being promoted with senior citizen entertainers Duckie’s Posh Club known for their raucous tea parties.

Supporting the children who have no internet Since the end of April a community project working in the Brandon Estate and surrounding area has delivered food parcels to 79 adults and 76 children, along with activity packs to help keep them entertained and busy during lockdown.

“We have found many families do not have a tablet or laptop at home for the children to complete their homework or access information online,” says Elaine Joseph, iiChild’s founder.

“Another point is that with the children staying at home longer than usual the use of gas and electricity has risen dramatically for some families.

“One family with three children ran out of gas and electricity so we have supported them until their Universal Credit allowance resumes.”

Grant funding only covers a small proportion of iiChild’s cost. As the lockdown is lifted Elaine is also focused on finding opportunities for young people whether through work experience, training or mentorship.

In the immediate term is looking for three tablets for families without computers, and arts and crafts materials for around 200 children in the Brandon Estate and nearby.

Longer term, they hope to find a a large hall in

Southwark they can use for holiday camps in July and August. These will be run in a slightly different way than usual to follow social distancing rules. iiChild runs holiday camps throughout the summer break for children and young people aged five to nineteen from Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm.

Their approach is based on supporting them to reach developmental milestones as youngsters, and then provide work experience and skills training for older teens.

Elaine hopes volunteers will come forward who can teach and offer advice on getting into careers with Adobe photoshop, marketing, filming, radio, television and architecture - all areas teens have expressed interest in.

She also had a message for those continuing to make their work possible despite the challenges of COVID-19: “I would like to thank Jack and Pelier Hall TRA for the use of their building to deliver food, Nicole Smith for delivering the food parcels, and Holly, aged fifteen, who is one of our young people who helps with packing the parcels each week.”

‘walking because i care’

A 72-year old support worker is walking his twelve-mile commute to protect the people he cares for at a home in Wimbledon.

Cees Van Dijk walks from his home in Crystal Palace to Autumn Close, a supported living service for people with learning disabilities, in Wimbledon, several times a week.

He has decided to avoid public transport to stay as virus free as possible and keep up his hiking hobby while unable to travel.

He estimates he’s walked more than 550 kilometres since the pandemic hit London, further than London to Paris. It takes him roughly an hour and 40 minutes each way.

Cees, who is Dutch and has lived in Canada, Germany and Kosovo before moving to London, says he believed avoiding public transport was the right thing to do until he felt confident testing had increased.

“I didn’t really think too much of it, it just seemed like the sensible and obvious thing to do,” he explained.

“I work with a fantastic team at Autumn Close and we are a really tight knit bunch. We’re all committed to providing the best support possible”.

Autumn Close’s service manager, John Steinmetz, who has worked with Cees for the last fifteen years at the home run by United Response, a charity dedicated to helping people with disabilities.

He said: “What Cees is doing is truly exceptional, but is in some ways not wholly surprising.

“The whole team do whatever they can to keep themselves safe and well and to continue to support the people living at the service, whatever that actually means.

“I feel very lucky to work with such a remarkable group of people, and the commitment Cees has shown at this hugely difficult time for care and support services is a tremendous example to the wider community of how brilliant people working in care really are.”

Bede House has raised more than £4,000 to support those living with domestic violence, with a cover version of Britney Spears’ ‘Stronger’.

The charity single was created last month by the Bede Choir - a group of survivors of domestic abuse - with support from Strictly Come Dancing star Hayley Sanderson, local rap artist Yaz, and a number of high-profile vocalists from the likes of X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent and The Voice UK. The survivors recorded their voices at home, on their phones, during lockdown and aim to

raise £10,000. All funds will go towards projects supporting women living with domestic abuse in Southwark and across the country through the work of Women’s Aid. Public donations will be matched by a generous supporter - up to a maximum of £50,000.

The single was also played in part of the Southwark Cathedral Remembrance Service to mark the third anniversary of the London Bridge attack.

Safe Haven Basketball is running weekly online sessions to help young people with learning disabilities and special needs keep up with their training during lockdown.

Although Safe Haven’s clubs in Southwark, Hackney and Westminster had to physically close during the pandemic, their head coach Josephine Maignomo is still running weekly fitness classes online via Zoom.

Safe Haven works with sport inclusion charity

Access Sport and has helped more than 10,000 children with learning disabilities get into sport, and trained more than 800 new coaches and volunteers.

Only around a quarter of children with disabilities say they take part in all sport and fitness activities at school.

The Southwark club is normally based at Black Prince Trust on Beaufoy Walk in Kennington.

stepping forward for justice Dozens of groups across Southwark took part in the #10kStepsForJustice walk on June 8 raising awareness of cuts to legal services.

Legal advice lines and other support services have experienced years of cuts since austerity - but demand for their help is higher than ever.

The event saw people take part either at home or in their own time and socially-

distanced space across the country, with Southwark Group of Tenants Organisation taking a lead role in coordinating TRAs across the borough to take part.

“People MUST have access to justice. A huge percentage of us visit Southwark Citizens’ Advice Bureau or Southwark Law Centre as people try to fight wrong decisions.”

Outrage over George Floyd is also tied into the anger towards other pressing issues

O

ver the past few weeks, I have received a significant amount of correspondence from constituents who have been rightly outraged by the appalling murder of George Floyd at the hands of US law enforcement.

Tied into this, there has also been an outpouring of grief and anger towards other pressing issues such as the tragic death of transport worker, Belly Mujinga, and the way the government has dealt with the publication of Public Health England’s report into the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on people from BAME backgrounds.

Let’s be clear: the spectre of racism which haunts our society in both its overt and systemic forms is the common denominator underpinning all of these issues. Whether it’s the underlying factors that have put the lives of BAME people at the highest risk during this pandemic, such as overcrowding, poverty and low pay, or the disproportionate number of black boys and men being stopped and searched- we are well too aware of the challenges that we need to overcome in the continuing fight for equality.

This is why action and pragmatism should not be sacrificed in the face of endless reviews and commissions, which despite the best of intentions, can lead to the can being kicked further down the road.

Last month, the government struck a bailout deal with Transport for London (TfL), after

an unprecedented drop in their revenue due to the Covid-19 outbreak. As part of the bailout, the government imposed a number of punitive conditions. This includes the suspension of the older persons’ Freedom Pass and 60+ London Oyster photocard concessions during the morning peak and the removal of free under eighteens’ travel.

With the finances of many Londoners being hit hard by the global pandemic, and the thousands of households in London falling below the pensioner and child poverty line, this is a callous and nonsensical move by the government.

When I met with Southwark Pensioners Centre last year, many of the service users highlighted the importance of the Freedom Pass in helping them to maintain their independence. Please be assured that I will continue to fight for these travel concessions to be fully reinstated as a matter of urgency.

Finally, as lockdown measures slowly begin to ease, I would like to thank Southwark residents for all their efforts in following social distancing guidelines and looking out for each other and particularly the most vulnerable in the community.

As always, I would like to express my gratitude to our key and essential workers, who continue to put themselves at risk day-in, day-out, especially the teachers who have returned to the classroom. Let’s continue to stand up for their right to safe and fair working conditions.

Letter to the Editor As we move into a new phase where we must all learn to adapt to living with the virus, it is time to accept that simple, practical tools to limit the spread of the virus are of paramount importance.

The evidence shows that a face covering can reduce larger respiratory droplets emitted in coughing, sneezing, and talking, which we know is a key mode of transmission.

That is why the British Medical Association has been calling on the Government to implement face covering policies since April and we have welcomed recent developments that residents in London will be required to wear a face mask on public transport or when going into hospital in any capacity.

Foremost, it is vital that the Government extends this policy to cover GP surgeries and other health, community and social care settings across the region. By implementing a consistent rule, we can avoid any confusion amongst the general public and reduce the spread of the virus in high risk environments.

Only with clear public information will this be instrumental in controlling the virus. The Government must be clear with the public on the type of coverings that are necessary and how to access them.

With the UK death toll now tragically over 40,000, it is absolutely crucial that the Government gets this right as protecting the health of people in London is paramount.

Support for families will be critical

t the time of going to press, Boris Johnson had just announced a major u-turn over free school meal vouchers after an incredible campaign from England footballer Marcus Rashford.

Southwark has led the way in free school meals and holiday provision for some time now and this win, whilst making a huge difference to the 1.3 million children nationwide going hungry, is just one type of support many families desperately need.

Just as schools and shops reopen, and the furlough scheme is set to end, we will begin to move beyond the relatively insulated confines of our own personal lockdowns and emerge back into the outside world.

It’s going to be a shock to the system. The government’s package of financial support is - to rely on an overused phase- unprecedented in these times. But just because it’s like nothing we’ve ever seen in peacetime doesn’t mean it’s nearly enough to fuel us for the battle ahead.

Employers are still making redundancies, some companies kept going on furlough schemes will go bust.

Landlords will want their rent. And, just when those lucky enough to be in work start to feel confident about venturing back to their jobs - school’s out and there’s six more weeks of childcare to arrange.

Hanging over all of this is the threat of a global recession and further waves of a killer virus that has already taken the lives of 41,969 people in the UK. Helping people get back in work in a way that keeps them and their families safe will be impossible unless those with school age children have added support during July and August. So many people rely on grandparents, other relatives, neighbours and friends, or nurseries and childminders for childcare - often in vulnerable or shielded groups. Holiday provision is always patchy. More than ever we now need more initiatives like the holiday hubs already set up in Southwark to ensure kids can get outside, learn and play while socially distancing - or have more support remotely for parents who are staying at home.

Otherwise there will be a huge number of parents expected to turn up to work but without childcare who fear losing their jobs if they don’t comply. And children with parents at home will face weeks stuck indoors - no different to lockdown at the peak of the crisis and certainly no holiday to speak of.

Happy as pigs in muck Readers may recall more than a year ago, Surrey Docks Farm in Rotherhithe suffered a break-in, in which several of its pigs were stolen and never recovered.

Now, the farm has seen a new litter of the Oxford Sandy and Black pigs - and they’re doing very well indeed.

After keeping the births of the new piglets relatively hush-hush, the Farm says the piglets are now old enough to play in the farm.

“The piglets are now big enough to go out and explore the field and not escape through any gaps!” says the farm. “They had a great time rooting about and playing in the mud.”

‘to be sold in old kent road shop’

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey man has been jailed for attempting to smuggle illegal weapons into the UK for sale in his Old Kent Road shop.

Kamber Ramadani, 53, must now serve 21 months behind bars after confessing to investigators that he intended to sell the flick knives and butterfly knives for profit.

He was stopped by Border Force officials doing checks on traffic from Dover docks on February 12, 2019, and originally told them he had been visiting Croatia and Kosovo.

After searching the boot of his Mercedes, officers found 28 different knives, and a starter pistol with ammunition in the footwell.

According to the National Crime Agency, Ramadani told them that he had bought the weapons from a Coatian car boot sale – and the gun was going to be a present for his son.

The agency’s Martin Grace slammed the shopkeeper’s actions, saying he had “no doubt” that at least some of the weapons would have ended up in “criminal hands.”

Ramadani pleaded guilty to charges of possessing offensive weapons, possessing a knife in a public place and possession of an imitation firearm at Canterbury Crown Court.

He was sentenced at the same court on Thursday, June 11.

“These types of weapons are exactly the type we see being used in gang violence on the streets of London and other UK towns and cities every day,” added NCA Dover Branch Commander, Martin Grace.

“Ramadani admitted his plan was to sell the weapons for profit and I’ve no doubt that some, if not all, of them would have ended up in criminal hands.”

Bermondsey tube station now open, but others still shut

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Bermondsey tube station reopened on Monday, after more than two months of closure.

The station was closed in midMarch as part of moves to deter travel during the strictest phase of the lockdown.

Borough and Southwark tube stations were also among the 40 stations that TfL had closed.

However, TfL said neither of the two major stations, on the Northern and Jubilee lines respectively, were currently planned to reopen.

From Monday, Bermondsey station has been open between 7am and 7pm.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, many services are reduced, with the public still being advised to avoid public transport unless necessary.

This also includes no service on the Waterloo & City Line, and no Night Tubes or Night Overground services.

New docking stations in SE1 and SE16

According to TfL, May was the most popular month ever for hires of the Santander bikes – commonly called Boris bikes – with over 1.1m hires.

Tree pollarding in nesting season

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Outrage has been caused by Southwark Council and its contractors pollarding trees during nesting season.

Trees in Bermondsey, Rotherhithe and Dulwich had their canopies chopped in April and May despite nesting season being underway - leaving behind bare branches just as they should have been in leaf.

After complaints from campaigners, Southwark Council confirmed some trees had been ‘pollarded’ later than they are supposed to - but this is a one-off due to safety fears over decay and subsidence. The local authority says work has now been halted until November.

In a letter written in response to complaints, seen by the News, council officers from the environmental department said timings had been pushed back due to a backlog of work delayed over budget cuts.

Removing a tree’s branches, and therefore a nest’s protection, is in breach of wildlife protection laws if the nest is in use.

But one video widely shared on social media shows a magpie returning to her

bare tree minutes after it was cleared by contractors. The council responded that this was now a disciplinary matter and promised works had now been suspended until November.

Sarah Vaughan, from campaigning group Trees for Bermondsey, said: “Our group doesn't dispute that larger street trees have to be re-pollarded, just that these works should only take place in the dormant season.”

One Bermondsey resident who contacted us, Peter Richardson, said: “On Bank Holiday Friday, May 8th, two teams of men arrived on Old Jamaica Road and proceeded to pollard and effectively ruin a number of really lush and verdant trees which are set back from the road on a grassy area.

“The first is of a set of trees that were pollarded over a month ago at the junction of Abbey Street and Jamaica Road, SE1. You can see that they barely have a leaf on any of them and this is in mid May. “Spring is when trees are growing after the winter months and the foliage provides cover for nesting birds and other wildlife.”

A series of lime trees on Barry Road in East Dulwich were chopped during April.

And volunteers who care for Dog Kennel Hill Wood have also criticised the ‘axehappy’ decision to chop down the area’s only dead wood tree as it was a ‘perfect habitat for bats’.

There are now plans to cut two more lime trees - which the group says have come without any consultation. All would have been part of the original private gardens of long-gone houses on the site.

Cllr Rebecca Lury, Southwark Council’s cabinet Member for culture, leisure, equalities and communities, said: “We take the care of the 80,000 trees on council land very seriously and work to nurture, maintain and grow our tree stock.”

With regards to a tree on council-owned land in Jamaica Road, she said: “A weakness was identified in this tree so, following a thorough check for nesting birds, works were completed to help secure the tree’s future and remove any risk of falling branches to people passing below.

“While our policy is not to pollard trees from April to October, we must still manage any risk presented by sick or dying trees to people in their vicinity, during this time.”

A Policeman on Policing

After early years in the Home Counties John Sutherland’s family moved to London when he was fifteen and John has lived here ever since, writes Michael Holland...

His was a normal childhood until one moment when being a police officer became his sole purpose in life. His early dreams were realised when he became a bobby on the beat in Brixton, before rising up to the dizzy heights of Borough Commander for Southwark. This is how he tells the tale:

‘I was standing on Hammersmith Broadway waiting to catch the bus to school. While there a police officer walked past, not doing anything in particular and paying no attention to me. Knowing what I know now, I suspect that he was bored, cold, tired and hungry, but as I watched him something just clicked inside me - That’s the only way I’ve ever been able to describe it. From that moment onwards, I never seriously considered doing anything else. More than thirty years later, I still think that it’s

the finest thing that any of us could ever choose to do with our working lives.’

John’s dream came true and in his police career he worked in seven different London boroughs, plus stints in Scotland Yard, in uniform and as a detective, while climbing steadily through the ranks: Uniform PC at Brixton Uniform Sergeant at Peckham Detective Sergeant at Lewisham Detective Inspector at the Racial & Violent Crime Task Force Borough Commander for Camden Borough Commander for Southwark.

John says he spent most of his career in uniform - in frontline, Borough-based roles - because he ‘loved the day-today contact with my colleagues and with the communities we served.’

His career gave him the opportunity to be Football Match Commander at Fulham, QPR, Chelsea and Arsenal, but, of course, policing is not just about football; the inner-city areas John Sutherland worked in would also present the most serious of crimes to be solved, which meant he was involved in many high-profile murder cases of recent years.

‘But,’ he says, ‘most of the day-today business of policing is taken up with stories that never make it to the headlines - scenes of crimes, car crashes and every kind of catastrophe - the stories known only to the small handful of people who were actually there.’

With such an interesting career, what were the highlights? ‘I had so many great roles but two highlights would be: Borough Commander at Southwark - the best I ever had, surrounded by a brilliant team of people, serving an extraordinary community, making a difference every single day, and Hostage & Crisis Negotiator: this is one of the greatest privileges of my life. Hollywood hostage scenarios are very rare; most of the callouts are to those in crisis - people who have reached the end of themselves

and are in need of a helping hand.’

But you cannot perform those roles and not suffer consequences; John’s mental health deteriorated and he talks freely about those dark days: ‘My illness was caused by a whole collision of circumstances: The general wear and tear of a policing life… Specific incidents that I dealt with along the way… The increasing demands of the day job - for example the endless requirement to do more with less (just one of the many devastating consequences of austerity)…

The things that have nothing to do with policing, but everything to do with me.

We all have a story outside of work. Mine isn’t dramatic, but life can overwhelm you sometimes.’

John began writing his story down to aid his recovery. He remembers, ‘It was a form of catharsis and became an important part of the mending process.

Over the course of a couple of years it slowly began to form into a book. ‘Blue’ is the story of my policing life and of the long, slow recovery from serious illness.’

Blue’s success has motivated him to follow it up with Crossing the Line.

This book goes deeper into policing and draws on the years of experience John has had in the job. He explains, ‘It tells a much bigger story about policing and what it reveals about the world we live in. It tackles ten of the greatest challenges facing society today alcohol, drugs, domestic violence, knife crime, terrorism and more. It looks at each of them through a police officer’s eyes and asks:

• What’s really going on out there?

• What’s really going wrong out there?

• Why are so many boys dying on our streets?

• Why are so many women being killed in their own homes?

• Why is extremism on the rise?

• And, critically, what are the answers to it all?

‘It doesn’t have to be like this,’ continues the former police officer. ‘We don’t have to resign ourselves to the endless repetition of the same grim headlines. But we are going to have to start doing things very differently if we want anything to change. ‘Crossing the Line’ is a book that invites us to see the world through new eyes - to cross from one side of the police cordon tape to the other and to begin to understand what is happening in places so close and yet so far away - in the lives of those whose faces might be familiar, but whose stories we do not know.’

With so many years on the force and so much experience in many areas of police work, what have you come away with? ‘One very powerful lesson I’ve learned in recent years is that it would be impossible to do the job of a police officer for any length of time and to remain unaffected by the things that you see and the things that you do. It’s the best job in the world but it’s a heck of a job too. The painful privilege of policing is to see all of life and all of death, and everything in between. Most of us, in the course of our lifetimes, will encounter extreme trauma on 3-4 occasions. It has been estimated that police officers and paramedics will encounter extreme trauma on 400-600 occasions. And, sometimes, it takes its toll. If I had my time again, I would try to look after myself a little better.’

Getting well and writing is at the top of John’s list right now with a book of fiction planned after Crossing The Line - ‘The story is set almost entirely in Southwark’ he reveals.

The future? ‘I’d still love to be writing.

And I’m looking forward to the time I’ll have to spend with my family. Beyond that, I’m not making too many plans. I’ll go wherever the adventure takes me.’

Finding Beauty in the Imperfections

Artist/designer M.E. Ster-Molnar made her first art series as a young girl in California - oversized flowers on poster paper called ‘I Love Flowers’, and now describes her art as ‘sunshine infused, celebrating the beautiful imperfections of life’, writes Michael Holland...

M’s early love of art led to her dropping out of calculus in high school to take more art classes. Recalling those days she says, ‘I was also into fashion and had dreams of opening up my own store, and eventually did - one in Philadelphia, the other later in Venice, California… I developed my own clothing line and art was interwoven into the way that I presented the merchandise as well as my label.’

These days the California girl is based in Rotherhithe and still very much involved with creating: ‘Art doesn’t need to be perfect,’ she begins. ‘My best work is done when I don’t put pressure on myself and just let the creativity and moment take me…

When I create mono print “Super Bloom” paintings on paper, my favourite moment is when I pull the squeegee and lift up the print bed to see what’s underneath; the elements of imperfection are part of the process and

end result. That’s where the beauty lies.’

M had been teaching an after school Art Journal Club, which ended when lockdown started. ‘I had friends asking me if I could ever do an art journal workshop,’ she says.

‘So I started streaming a free Art Journal Club live every Friday on my Instagram and Facebook pages… It’s been lots of fun and I have a nice community all over that world that creates virtually every week.’

The first few weeks of lockdown felt like an alternative universe for this creative.

‘Trying to navigate what was going on felt pretty surreal… I’m a pretty positive person, but there have been tough days for sure.

Balancing a primary school daughter who misses her friends has been tough; extra cuddles and trying to make schoolwork fun have helped, but some days I just let things unravel and let the pressure of it all go.’

But since the black cloud of the virus hit she has learnt other skills: ‘I taught myself how to sew!’ came the excited cry. ‘It’s been so fun! Even though I was a fashion designer, I always hired experts to do the sewing and patterns.’

Utilising her new talent M has been making and selling fabric masks. ‘I have also done some volunteer work with the

Rotherhithe Covid-19 Mutual Aid Group where I met a new senior friend. Silver linings, for sure.’

What do you plan to do to get through this crisis?

‘My plans went out the window along with my daily planner when this started. I have a wipe board to keep my family on track, kind of! Now that the weather is nicer, I’m finding the sunshine is keeping my spirits up… I thought that I would have a masterpiece finished during lockdown, but alas, no!’

After Covid? ‘Before lockdown I tended to pack a lot of things into each day and it was wearing me out. I plan on batching my work into bigger chunks of focus – i.e. days at the print studio, others at my home studio, balancing whatever schooling will look like for our daughter. Plus, I’ll continue to ride my bike most places, so I will need to take into account more travel time. It’s all good.’

George Chapman, the landlord who murdered his mistress... then another, and then another Man who poisoned women was even thought to have been Jack the Ripper

Bessie Taylor F I F TY - S E V EN - y e a r - o l d historian Helena Wojtczak has a problem. Through a series of bizarre coincidences, Helena finds herself inseparably attached to one of Southwark’s, possibly the world’s, most famous criminals.

At the turn of the 1897 the intelligent, handsome and above all cunning George Chapman lived in the Finsbury area of London.

The Polish migrant had just burnt down his own pub, The Prince of Wales, purely for the insurance pay-out. He had lived there with Mary Spink, 37, the first of three women Chapman went on to murder in the most sadistic of ways.

Rather than take up blades or arms, his game was to sneak small doses of a tasteless toxin called Tar Tar Emeti into his mistresses’ food and drink.

Helena says Chapman lived with Spink “in sin”, something “virtually unheard of in their time”, and that after her death in 1899, her gormless doctor’s verdict was that she had simple died of “natural causes”.

Next he moved to Union Street in Borough, and used his payout to buy the Monument pub. A young barmaid, Bessie Taylor, became his next victim after offering her a job and digs at his upstairs flat.

“He started poisoning her as well,” Helena said. “The poison made his victims sick with severe diarrhea, but it took weeks to kill them, and they would eventually succumb to exhaustion and dehydration.

“With each of his victims he would play the loving, concerned husband, and would call on doctors and nurses to come and stay. But none of them could understand what was causing it.”

Poor Bessie died on Valentine’s Day in 1901. Still the ever-popular and unsuspecting landlord of the Monument; Chapman put up another advert for the barmaid job, and along came nineteen-year-old Maud Marsh, who was sixteen years his junior.

Within weeks Chapman was up to his old tricks. But he took another reckless gamble that year and decided to set fire to the Monument, only

this time the plan backfired and his suspicious insurers refused to pay him.

The old Monument building was later demolished and lost forever.

So in January 1902, Chapman and Marsh took their business to The Crown in Borough High Street. Chapman soon resumed his sinister games, and as Maud grew sicker he even pushed his luck by inviting her parents to come and comfort her, while he poisoned her under their noses.

“They took Maud to Guys’ Hospital,” Helena said. “For a month she stayed there and actually started to get better, and no one knew why.

“Then as soon as she was discharged and went back – guess what – he started poisoning her again.” Maud died on October 22, 1902, and this is how all came to an end. Maud’s parents wanted to know how Chapman’s last “wife” died. That was enough to make everyone suddenly suspicious.

Chapman was arrested on October 25 and charged with Maud’s murder.

The police ordered Spink and Bessie's bodies to be exhumed so they could be

examined further. Eventually they had enough evidence to prosecute, and he was sent for trial at the Old Bailey in March 1903.

Crowds packed out the court room and every paper in the Britain and the colonies covered it. One round of feverish headlines quoted a police chief inspector Abberline, who had said on the record he suspected Chapman may have been the missing Jack the Ripper.

Chapman spoke only to say the words “not guilty” and was convicted for three counts of murder on March 19.

He was hanged at 9am on April 7 in Wandsworth Prison. Helena released her second biography ‘Jack the Ripper at Last?’ on April 7 2016, having discovered a flood of new information about his childhood from Polish public records.

Helena said: “I came across him because of my connection with Hastings. It was in Hastings that he bought the poison, and it’s where I live now.

“But I also lived in the East End where Chapman lived with Spink, and I also

lived in Southwark for a long time. So it’s like I’ve followed in his footsteps all the way. That’s what made it impossible for me not to follow his story.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JAYSON MOLUMBY was stranded in Ireland after the start of the lockdown – and ended up getting on his mum’s nerves!

Molumby, 21, was given permission to return home to Cappoquin in Waterford in the south-east of Ireland after the suspension of football in the second week of March.

That meant the midfielder was back living under the roof of his mum, Claire, for the first time since he left as a sixteen-year-old to pursue his professional football dreams in England with Brighton.

Molumby trained locally until measures were eased and he could return to south London to continue with his personal fitness programme.

Millwall’s last game before fixtures were cancelled was the 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest on March 6, when Molumby assisted Matt Smith for one of the striker’s hat-trick goals.

The match against the Rams scheduled for a week later was called off as uncertainty gripped the game and the nation with the spread of the coronavirus.

“It was early on after the Forest game when the Derby game was cancelled and we were told it was going to be a two- or three-week break. That was the aim at the time,” Molumby said.

“So I just went straight home. I

wanted to see my family, I hadn’t seen them in a while. We usually get five or six weeks off in the summer when I go and see them, but I knew that wouldn’t happen.

“I came back when the government lifted restrictions a bit for athletes to go and train. I got about four, five weeks at home.

“I think she was as sick of me as I was of her at the end of it! I think three weeks was probably around enough.

“In Ireland there are loads of green spaces, take your pick. I trained on a little cricket pitch, even though it’s quite rare to find a cricket pitch where I’m from. The football pitches around aren’t great so I did my running on the cricket pitch and it was really good.

“There were people doing work on the cricket pitch and around it so they were asking me how things were and what the plan was for the rest of the season.

“It’s one step at a time and it might lift people’s spirits when we get back.

“It was tough, not seeing the boys. It’s such a good dressing room, we have a good laugh together. It was difficult not seeing them for such a long time, especially after being on a high after the last game.

“We were buzzing to see each other, the first week back [at the end of May] we were all delighted.

“The gaffer sent a video every few days updating us on what was going on and asking us how we were all doing.

“Then we had the Zoom sessions so you could see the boys on the screen and have a bit of a laugh. That switches it up a bit from doing the work on your own. The entire club has been brilliant, the way we’ve dealt with it we’ve been full-go since the lockdown. We’ve been doing our running and extra bits.

“I think it was getting a bit competitive [on the fitness app Strava]. We had little things like 1,500-meter time trials so stuff like that motivates you, you’re trying to push yourself.”

Millwall are eighth in the Championship with nine games left.

Molumby continued: “We’re two points off and we feel really good, the spirit and confidence is high. We’re going in relishing it and we’re going to go for it. All the boys seem very excited.

“The feeling’s really good, everyone’s buzzing to be back. We’re feeling excited and we’re ready to go now.

“We’ve done everything we could during the break, everyone’s done the programmes to a tee so we should be

in good shape. We’re really looking forward to it.

“It was mentally challenging because we didn’t get a break and obviously we’re not going to get a break for next season as well. It’s pretty much all go.

“League One and League Two finished and we’re a couple of points off the play-offs so we would have been gutted if our league hadn’t finished. We weren’t sure what was going to happen but everyone’s done what they needed to do and thankfully it looks like it’s coming back this weekend.

“I don’t yet feel 100 per cent but I don’t think you will until two or three games in. We need to just kick off as quickly as we can this Saturday and hit the ground running.”

Molumby now faces more competition for his midfield place since the last game, when he and Ryan Woods started together at Forest.

Ben Thompson and Ryan Leonard have returned to training after their injuries, but rather than worry about his place Molumby is excited that the pair are set to be part of the run-in.

“It’s unreal to have them back, they offer something different in there. We all try to help the team in different ways.

It’s great to have Lenny and Thommo back, they’re really big players for us and have done very well for us when they’ve played this season.”

With Shaun Williams also in the mix for a midfield spot, boss Gary Rowett faces a tough selection decision.

Molumby would love to get the chance

Jayson Molumby says the players have done all they can to be ready for the resumption of the league to test himself against England’s record scorer Wayne Rooney, who could start in midfield for Phillip Cocu’s side.

Molumby said: “It hasn’t even sunk in yet, but we’ll have to see on Saturday when the team sheet comes out, if I get the nod and it he plays. It would be unbelievable to look back on in your career if that did happen.

“But you don’t really care who you play against, all you care about is winning.”

As well as trying to impress Rowett this week ahead of a potential duel with Rooney, longer term Molumby wants to catch the eye of Stephen Kenny, his manager with the Ireland under-21s.

Kenny was set to take over from former Lions boss Mick McCarthy after the Euro 2020 campaign, but that move was brought forward with the qualification play-offs postponed and the tournament moved to 2021.

Molumby has been compared to legendary former Ireland skipper Roy Keane, and he is determined to follow in his hero’s footsteps and claim a place in the senior side.

“I had a good relationship with [Kenny] when he was the under-21 manager. He made me captain, which was a big honour for me.

“I’ve loads of respect for him and I think that’s mutual between us. I just want to kick on and try and impress him again. I need to show what I can do at senior level, it’s a big step up but I want to aim high and play senior football for my country.”

Pearce admitted it was difficult working at home during the two months they were away from the training ground with no “end goal” in sight.

But he praised Rowett and the staff for how they have handled an unprecedented situation.

“They’ve been fantastic, keeping in touch with all the lads and keeping us updated with information where they could,” Pearce told the News.

“It’s difficult for them also because for a lot of the time they were in the dark about a lot of stuff.

“As players we were chomping at the bit when we got back and I think the manager could see that and he probably wanted to just calm us down at times and take it steady the first few days. The lads were so energetic at getting back in, and so happy just to be back with each other.

“The Strava [fitness] app is a great app and all the lads were on that. It gets competitive, lads want to get the best times on the runs and that’s only a good thing, healthy competition is good.

We had that and hopefully it can pay dividends.

“Everyone’s buzzing to be back and everyone’s in very high spirits. It’s been a long lay-off with the lockdown process and everyone was chomping at the bit to get back into training and now, eventually, getting back into games starting this Saturday. It’s going to be a great occasion.

“To go through all of that without knowing when we were potentially going to be coming back was probably the most difficult time. It was all up in the air. When we got a date things started picking up and people started getting excited again about football and getting back into training. Thankfully we’re almost there now.

“The overriding feeling among everyone at the club was, if we could get the games back on, if it was safe then let’s try our best to get the games back on. It’s been very safe, as safe an environment as you could hope for.

The players and the staff, everyone in the building is getting tested twice a week and still being very sensible when you leave the training ground.

We’re keeping on top of things at the training ground and thankfully things have gone okay so far. Long may that continue and we can just focus on the football.”

SO MUCH will be different and uncertain yet one thing won’t have changed when Millwall resume their league campaign this Saturday.

Gary Rowett’s Lions are two points off sixth spot with nine games left and will be aiming to keep their promotion challenge going when they host Derby County, their first competitive fixture since March 6.

The Den, of course, won’t have fans present, denying the home faithful what would without a doubt have been the chance to cheekily goad Wayne Rooney.

Millwall were looking at other options this week, including cardboard cut-outs of fans – known as ‘Crowdies’, with Rowett and the squad paying for the first 600 purchased, at a cost of £25 a pop – as well as crowd noise pumped in through the stadium sound system.

The Lions have played in-house practice games with and without the artificial noise.

“We’re still experimenting with what we think is the right thing to do,” Rowett said. “We’re still speaking with the EFL for clarification on what teams can and can’t do.

“It’s not something we’d normally think about but our fans aren’t there so we’re just trying to create a scenario where it feels a little bit closer to normal.

“We’ve looked at having cardboard cut-out fans to see if it feels like there’s

All that off-pitch preparation will be revealed come 1pm on Saturday afternoon. Before then, Rowett has plenty of decisions to make over team selection. Mason Bennett is unavailable against his parent club, a blow considering how good he was against Nottingham Forest before the enforced break.

Like everyone else, the Millwall players have had to isolate during the pandemic. That can pose problems psychologically, but Pearce said an environment of openness and support at the club meant no player was going to be left feeling alone.

Pearce continued: “We’ve got a very tight-knit squad at the club anyway so we haven’t got an issue in terms of anyone feeling isolated from that group.

We all look after each other, we all text each other, we all speak to each other.

“I’m a part of that, of course. Any information I had passed on to me by the club I would then pass on to the lads. That’s part of my role and that happened at certain times throughout lockdown.

“It was just about making sure the lads were okay, really. The lads were very good in terms of keeping on top of their fitness. Sometimes you’ve got to look more at the mental side of things.

Mental welfare is just as important as the physical side.

“We encourage it at the club that if you are feeling a little bit down or whatever you should go and speak to someone.

I’d like to think that with the group of players we’ve got if someone was struggling the lads would get around them and certainly be there for them as best we could.

“We’re massive on that and try to encourage it as best we can.

“The lads have got up to speed pretty quickly after maintaining it during lockdown. We’re looking forward to the start and we’re raring to go.”

Leonard hasn’t started a game for Millwall since last October as he recovered from a knee injury and then a hamstring tear that interrupted his comeback. Philip Cocu’s Derby could include former England captain and record goal-scorer Wayne Rooney in their side, but Rowett won’t only be focusing on the 34-year-old veteran.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT insists all is “very, very positive” in the Millwall camp ahead of Saturday’s clash with Derby – but admits to a “tinge of trepidation” as the Championship resumes.

The Lions will play their first competitive game since March when they welcome the Rams to a supporter-less Den this weekend.

Strict protocols will be followed.

Derby will be in a different part of The Den to the normal away changing rooms. Lions players will get togged out at different times.

There are designated arrival times for photographers and media, all of whom are obligated to wear facemasks for the duration of their shifts inside the stadium.

Millwall returned to training at Calmont Road at the end of May before resuming contact sessions earlier this month.

Preparations had gone well by earlier this week. The Lions defeated Colchester in a friendly in SE16 last

“We’re very, very positive about

the situation we’re in in terms of how prepared we are and how fit the players are.

“But I think there’s a tinge of trepidation for everyone because you’re going into what’s almost like a mini-tournament over five weeks over which there are going to be lots of twists and turns and different things to deal with, I’m sure.”

THE DEN will be missing its usual raucous match-day atmosphere this weekend – but Jayson Molumby is urging the Millwall side to make it as hostile as possible for Derby County on Saturday.

The Championship resumes behind closed doors this weekend but the only noise will be the shouts from players and backroom staffs.

The clash with Wayne Rooney’s Rams would have been expected to be close to a sell-out in normal circumstances, but the hosts will have to find a way to make up for the boost the home crowd usually provides.

Molumby admits the absence of Lions fans is a blow, but he is not going to be making any excuses.

“We know how big they are, especially at home where we have five out of nine games left,” Molumby said. “It’s massive for us there and it’s intimidating for opponents coming to The Den. “But I think we have to just try to create our own atmosphere and tempo in the game to make it as difficult as possible for any opposition coming to the ground.”

Social distancing protocols will be in place for players, backroom teams and media at all grounds.

But Molumby has vowed to enjoy it if his side scores against Saturday’s opponents.

“For me, if one of the boys score I’ll give them a hug or whatever,” he said. “I won’t be backing down from celebrating a big goal. Obviously we need to be careful but we’re all getting tested, the opposition is getting tested so if someone scores I’ll be celebrating.”
