council opposition leader steps down

josh@southwarknews.co.uk The leader of the opposition Liberal Democrats on the council has stood down after ten years in the role.

Cllr Anood Al-Samerai has been succeeded in the top position in the group by Nick Johnson, a Surrey Docks ward councillor.

Cllr Al-Samerai said she was proud of the past decade heading up the opposition to the Labour-run council, saying it had been a “privilege” to lead.

“At the last elections in 2018, we increased our number of Liberal Democrat councillors in Southwark and every one of us is dedicated to making the borough a better place for all our residents,” she said.

“I am proud of our record – whether it was reversing youth services cuts or getting empty homes back into use.

“From saving day centres and nurseries to stopping wasteful council spending, our group has always put the voices of residents first and I know that the team, led by Nick, will continue to do so.”

Cllr Johnson, who also runs the Trinity25 gin brand, said he was delighted to be taking on the position – pledging to take the fight to the Labour administration.

“The Council must help people and local

business in their communities first and foremost – not Town Hall chiefs.

“We will fight to ensure it is the voices of real people heard at the council in the recovery and continue to fight Labour wasting your

money on vanity projects and covering up their failure on promises.

“Our priorities continue to be better and more affordable housing, eliminating crime and taking action on climate change and above all to build a better borough for our children and children’s children.“ He added that he wanted to increase the number of council seats the party has in the next local elections in 2022, and to “never let another Tory seat back into Southwark.”

Cllr William Houngbo (London Bridge & West Bermondsey) was elected the deputy leader of the group, Cllr Hamish McCallum (North Bermondsey) the group’s chief whip, and Cllr David Noakes (Borough & Bankside) will be the group’s new chair.

The news comes after the leader of the Labour group, Cllr Peter John, pledged he would stand down after a decade in control of the council in Tooley Street.

However, the resignation was put on ice over the coronavirus outbreak.

Cllr John told the News at the time: “I think it would have been irresponsible for me to leave during this unprecedented crisis and I hope it gives some reassurance to residents.”

The Liberal Democrats currently have only 14 councillors, meaning the council is Labourcontrolled.

Council boss says that full classrooms are logistically impossible with social distancing

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The council’s top boss has warned that all year groups may not return to schools in Southwark until at least September, over fears social distancing makes full classrooms logistically impossible.

Cllr Peter John, who leads at town hall, told the News that he did not expect all year groups to be back before the start of the next school year after conference calls with head teachers in the borough.

An all-year groups return might have to be delayed until social distancing measures were no longer in place, with another option potentially being year groups being educated on

different days of the week.

It comes as the government announced this week it would be abandoning its target of having all primary school pupils back in classes before September.

Instead, schools will have flexibility on whether to admit more pupils, apart from those in Reception, Year One and Year Six – even though parents could still insist on keeping children at home.

“From my conversations with headteachers, the reality seems to be that that if schools were to [fully] reopen, there would be no social distancing,” said Cllr John.

“The logistics are just so overwhelming that if they are going to reopen to all years, there would be no social distancing.”

Despite that, the local authority leader said parents should feel comfortable sending their kids to school if in the

eligible years.

“The biggest challenge is reassuring parents,” he said. “The message from me would be no-one wants to see a child put at risk at this time.

“No school is reopening to anyone without a full risk assessment, without absolute certainty that what they are doing is safe.”

He also urged those who have been taking part in protests over the Black Lives Matter movement – sparked by the death of George Floyd – to avoid gatherings.

While recognising the “strong feeling” behind the protests, Cllr John said: “Please don’t come out onto the streets.

“Write a letter, or do something else.

People feel very strongly about this issue, but that’s no reason to put anyone’s welfare at risk.”

Over £360,000 in for Evelina already

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A little boy who was so badly abused by his biological parents that both his legs were amputated has raised more than £360,000 for Evelina Children’s Hospital after being inspired by Captain Tom.

Five-year-old Tony Hudgell aims to walk ten kilometres on his new crutches to raise money for the hospital that saved his life.

Tony was suffering from multiple fractures, dislocations and blunt trauma when Paula and Mark Hudgell, from West Malling in Kent, first became his foster carers in 2015.

His injuries were so severe he suffered multiorgan failure, toxic shock and sepsis - taking him seconds away from death as he lay on life support at Evelina London.

Miraculously, Tony recovered against all odds but has been left with permanent physical damage including losing his hearing in one ear and having to have both legs amputated due to infection. He continues to be treated at Evelina, which Paula describes as his ‘second home’.

On his JustGiving page, Paula said: “Even though Tony suffered so much at the start of his life, today he is a bright, happy and confident little boy, who loves life. And we could not be prouder of him.

“Since seeing Captain Tom on the TV, Tony has wanted to do his own challenge and raise some pennies for the wonderful Evelina London Children's Hospital, his second home.

“Tony has recently been learning to walk on his new legs with crutches, and throughout June wants to walk ten kilometres to help raise money for Evelina London, the hospital he has been treated throughout his life.

“Every year, Evelina London provides vital care and support for more than 95,000 children and young people from across London and the south east.

“Your donations in support of Tony will help

make an enormous difference to their work and enable the Evelina to do everything possible to ensure that all children in their care can live their best lives, today and tomorrow.

“This challenge may seem like an easy task for many, but for Tony this is a huge mountain to climb.”

Tony began his challenge last week, on June 1 hoping to raise £500. As of Tuesday morning, more than 17,000 people had donated to his page, with the total at £367,913 and counting.

Evelina London’s associate director of fundraising, Caroline Gormley, said: “We can’t thank Tony and his family enough for their incredible fundraising efforts and have been astonished at the kindness of all those that have donated so far.

“Tony is such an inspiration. The money raised through his sheer determination will go towards helping so many other children at Evelina London.

We are so proud he is part of our family.”

Paula and Mark, who have seven other children, successfully campaigned for the Crown Prosecution Service to prosecute Tony’s biological parents after first being told there was insufficient evidence to put them behind bars.

Jody Simpson and Tony Smith had claimed his injuries were caused by an accident, but jurors heard in court how they were inflicted over a ten-day campaign of abuse in their squalid home in Maidstone. They had delayed seeking medical treatment for the baby, telling police they had been waiting for their boiler to be fixed.

They were jailed in 2018 for ten years - the maximum sentence for child cruelty - but could be released as early as 2022.

The Hudgells are now appealing for a new ‘Tony’s Law’ to increase sentences for child attackers in line with those for GBH with intent, manslaughter and murder, and create a child cruelty register to keep track of abusers and protect other children from harm.

herne hill sporting a funky new wall mural

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A new mural celebrating Dulwich and Herne Hill's sporting history was unveiled last week in Burbage Road.

Painted by Lionel Stanhope and designed by Katrina Russell-Adams, the image references croquet, cricket, squash, tennis and hockey - all sports based in the railway arches at Dulwich Sports Club.

It also uses colours from Herne Hill velodrome and Dulwich Hamlet Football Club, and pays homage to sporting figures from Southwark, including athletics coach Scipio Africanus ‘Sam’ Mussabini; who lived at 84 Burbage Road.

Mussabini used a mix of science and psychology to boost athletes' performance. These methods helped

his runners win eleven Olympic medals, including five golds.

He is best known for coaching 1921 Paris Olympian and 100-metre gold medallist Harold Abrahams, a victory immortalised in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire.

The mural was commissioned by Network Rail and Dulwich Sports Club, and unveiled during the annual Dulwich Festival - this year held online.

It comes a year after Stanhope completed a mural on the opposite side of the road, celebrating Shakespearean actor Richard Burbage.

Stanhope said: "It's always good to work with Network Rail on these murals, they're so big and make such a massive difference to the places I'm working in.

"I get such great feedback from people when I'm painting them, just people walking past."

We can all do our bit to support the food industry, either by eating vegetables that are currently in season, trying new recipes using seafood caught in UK waters or by taking a summer job on a farm.

Here, we take a look at how everyone can help.

WITH PUBS, restaurants and hotels currently closed, large quantities of local seasonal vegetables and fish landed on our shores are at risk of going to waste.

To ensure this doesn’t happen, the UK Government is looking to inspire the nation to eat more in-season vegetables such as asparagus, cucumbers, mushrooms, salad leaves, courgette, spinach, tomatoes, radishes, beetroot and many others.

Everyone can do their bit to support farmers and get people eating fantastic fresh local food.

As part of the campaign, home cooks across the country asked to share recipes using #SeasonalVeg on social media.

People are also being encouraged to become more seafood-savvy and try seafood species caught in UK waters, such as mussels, crab, mackerel, herring, rainbow trout, hake, coley/saith, monkfish, sole and many others through the Sea For Yourself campaign.

Nearly half of UK adults would buy more seafood if they knew it was caught in UK waters, according to a survey carried out earlier this year for the Sea For Yourself campaign.

suppliers is also being created to make it easy to find a local retailer, local fishmonger and or even fishers who deliver locally.

There are also summer job opportunities available in our farms.

People who are fit, healthy and looking for temporary work are being asked to apply for jobs to support the delivery of the best quality fruit and veg for everyone to enjoy.

She said: “I’m working on one of the iceberg lettuce rigs. I’m staying on site and it’s great really, really enjoying it.

“I was actually travelling in sub-Saharan Africa and I had to come back because of Coronavirus, so I’ve decided to come and help Britain in the need for food.

“It’s a great team atmosphere.

You move with the rig across the field, you have to keep up with the pace that the guys are picking it at – it’s great fun and I’m glad to be doing something useful with my time.

“I would very much recommend it to somebody else.

I’m having a really good time, the people are really nice, and it’s nice to be out in the open air and doing something physical.”

Scott Watson has been growing radishes for G’s Growers in Feltwell, Norfolk, for more than 15 years.

He said: “The UK outdoor salads season is now well under way with lettuce, spring onions and radishes all being harvested on UK farms.

Our radish harvest started at the end of April and we have now been supplying UK grown radishes for over a month.

“The fine weather has meant that we have seen strong demand at the start of the season.

Radishes always sell well when the sun is out and people get going with barbecues, which drives increased salad consumption as main meals.”

Scott said it is important for people to eat produce in season, and eat healthily.

He said: “With the challenges of lockdown it is more important than ever that we try to eat a healthy balanced diet and ensure we are at least trying to get our five portions of fruit and veg per day.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk John Boyega, the Star Wars actor from Peckham, has emerged as one of the leading voices in the UK’s Black Lives Matter movement after giving an incredible speech in Hyde Park on Saturday.

Thousands defied calls to stay at home to join demonstrations in solidarity with protestors in the USA and to highlight racism in the UK. “Black lives have always mattered,” Boyega told the crowd. “We have always been important. We have always meant something.

“We have always succeeded regardless. And now is the time. I ain’t waiting.”

watching from home took to social media to praise his powerful speech as an era-defining moment, saying they shed tears watching him speak from the heart about racism.

“I have been born in this country.

I’m 28-years-old. Born and raised in London. And for a time, every black person understands and realises the first time you are reminded that you were black.

“You remember. Every black person in here remembered when another person reminded you that you were black.”

He went on to urge everyone to “understand how painful this is, to be reminded every day that your race means nothing” and said if his actions derailed his career then ‘f*** that’. He also called on black men to stand up for and support black women.

This week he shared his thanks on Instagram for all those who have supported the Black Lives Matter campaign, writing: “This is an intense time for our community, and the most important thing is for us to maintain momentum and not lose sight of how critical it is to pursue long term solutions and commitments, for the sake of our generation, and the next.”

He went on to say that he would continue using his platform to fight against injustice and inequality ‘no matter what’, before adding: “Before the pandemic hit, I visited a few schools in Southwark, to share my journey and to truly understand the minds and needs of our next generation.

“It was eye-opening and inspiring to say the least, and I look forward to continuing this work, and contributing more, once it is safe to do so.”

At least fifty fines have been issued over coronavirus lockdown breaches in Southwark and Lambeth, according to new data.

Met Police figures, covering the period between March 27 and May 15, show fifty fines were issued by cops in those two boroughs, accounting for around 5 per cent of London’s total of 973 fines.

The data also reveals that black people in London were disproportionately likely to be hit with a Covid-19 fine.

While just twelve per cent of the capital’s population is black, over a quarter of all fines were issued to a black person.

Meanwhile, their white counterparts made up 45 per cent of fines, but make up 60 per cent of the London population.

According to Southwark's top cop, Ch Supt Colin Wingrove, the reasons for this are "complex."

"The reasons for this are likely to be complex and reflect a range of factors," he said.

"This includes interactions between

the areas subject to significant proactive policing activity targeting crime hotspots and both the variation in the ageprofile and geographical distribution of ethnic groups in London."

Nearly three hundred of the fines were issued in one week alone, in midApril, which is close to the peak of the epidemic in the UK. The Met says that the vast majority of those who were arrested under coronavirus regulations were also likely to have been committing another offence.

“We have seen, overall, good compliance when we have intervened, meaning in most cases the need for issuing a Fixed Penalty Notice or arrest has been unnecessary,” said assistant commissioner, Mark Simmons.

“I hope Londoners will be reassured as a result of the low volume of Covid-19 related enforcement that we have been using the new powers only when we have absolutely needed to.”

Only 36 people had been arrested during that period for Covid-19 breaches where no other substantive offence was committed, states the force.

church’s ‘racist structures’

josh@southwarknews.co.uk The Bishop of Southwark took to his knee for eight minutes and 46 seconds during a Walworth service on Monday, in solidarity with the Black Lives Matters movement.

The gesture has become a symbol of solidarity among protesters following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis two weeks ago.

A white police officer, Derek Chauvin, knelt on Mr Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes, despite Mr Floyd begging to be allowed to breathe in distressing video footage.

George Floyd’s killing at the hands of law enforcement has sparked protests across the world, including in Peckham.

The Right Revd Christopher Chessun was invited to the outdoor service in St Peter’s Church by rector Andrew Moughtin-Mumby to commemorate George Floyd’s memory – who also called for the Church of England to tackle its own ‘racist structures.’

Children and staff in the playground of St Peter’s Primary School next door also took to their knees at the same time, according to the church.

The church called the gesture an act of

lament, solidarity and “of quiet protest” against the “racist structures of the Church of England and of our Government as revealed in the Windrush scandal.”

“It will be a symbolic act which we know must be followed with our own action to work for a Church and nation with more equal structures, and to work against racism and discrimination of any kind wherever we find it,” it said.

“Black Lives Matter.”

St Peter’s added that it had its own history of racism, which it had tried to confront, with its rector Father Andrew having previously called on the Church of England to face its own failings in welcoming the Windrush generation in the 1940s and 50s.

A parishioner at the church, Doreen Browne, has spoken about her experiences of racism within the Church of England, after her family were barred from entering St Peter’s in 1961 “due to the plain fact of the colour of her skin.”

A motion submitted by Father MoughtinMumby earlier this year to the Synod – the Church of England’s ruling body – had called on the institution to reflect on its own failings in tackling racism.

In response, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, admitted that the CoE remained “deeply institutionally

racist.”

“Personally, I am sorry and ashamed. I’m ashamed of our history and I’m ashamed of our failure,” said Mr Welby in February.

He added: “There is no doubt when we look at our own church that we are still deeply institutionally racist.

“Let’s just be clear about that. I said it to the College of Bishops a couple of years ago and it’s true.”

Guy’s could be among statues taken down

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A statue to the founder of Guy’s Hospital could be pulled down over his profiteering from the slave trade.

Thomas Guy made a fortune of hundreds of millions from shares in the South Sea Company, which was granted a monopoly on trafficking slaves to Spain’s colonies in South America in 1713.

A statue to Guy stands by the hospital he helped to found in 1725, next to the Science Gallery.

Now it may be removed after an outcry over statues honouring men involved in the British slave trade.

At the weekend, a statue to slavetrader Edward Colston was torn down

by Black Lives Matters protesters in Bristol, and dramatically dumped into the city’s docks.

And on Tuesday, London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced a commission to review landmarks and street names, saying he would push for those with clear links to slavery to be removed or changed.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust told the News it understood the anger of the black community over memorials celebrating slave-traders and that it would work with the commission to discuss the future of the memorial to its founder.

“We welcome the Mayor of London’s commission announced today and will work with the commission to consider the right way forward,” a spokesperson said.

"We recognise and understand the anger felt by the black community, and are fully committed to playing our part in ending racism, discrimination and inequality."

However, Guy’s Hospital rejected the idea that it could or should be renamed.

“There are no current plans to rename the hospital,” the spokesperson said, adding the hospital could not say more on the topic.

Just hours beforehand, it was revealed that a memorial praising the “genius” of prominent slave-trader Robert Milligan in West India Quay would be torn down.

In a statement, the Museum of London Docklands, where Milligan’s statue stands, said: “Now more than ever at a time when Black Lives Matter is calling for an end to public monuments honouring slave owners, we advocate for the statue of Robert Milligan to be removed on the grounds of its historical links to colonial violence and exploitation.

Test and Trace will help The new NHS Test and Trace service launched across England on May 28 forms a central part of the Government’s coronavirus recovery strategy to help us all get our lives back to something like normal.

The service will help identify, contain and control coronavirus, reduce the spread of the virus and save lives. Today we explain how the system will work and answer some of the key questions which have been raised by members of the public.

THE NHS Test and Trace service will have the capacity to trace the contacts of 10,000 people who test positive for coronavirus per day and can be scaled up if needed.

The rollout of the service, which includes 25,000 contact tracing staff working with Public Health England, has been made possible by the rapid expansion of testing.

People who are contacted by the NHS Test and Trace service will be given clear information explaining what they must do and how they can access local support if needed, and the Department for Work and Pensions has announced that those having to self-isolate will be eligible for statutory sick pay if they are unable to work from home.

New guidance means those who have been in close contact with someone who tests positive must isolate for 14 days, even if they have no symptoms, to avoid unknowingly spreading the virus.

Anyone who tests positive for coronavirus will be contacted by NHS Test and Trace and will need to share information about their recent interactions.

This could include household members,

people with who they have been in direct contact, or within two metres for more than 15 minutes.

People identified as having been in close contact with someone who has a positive test must stay at home for 14 days, even if they do not have symptoms, to stop unknowingly spreading the virus.

Dido Harding, who is executive chair of NHS Test and Trace, said: “NHS Test and Trace already employs over 40,000 people who are working hard to deliver both testing and contact tracing at scale.

This is no small achievement and I am hugely grateful to everyone involved.

“NHS Test and Trace will not succeed on its own – we all need to play our part.

“Together we can help contain the virus, stop it spreading further and ultimately save lives.”

‘I’m helping to reduce spread of the virus’ CASE STUDY NHS NURSE WHEN the pandemic started, NHS nurse Josie Hitchen was taking a career break.

In fact, she was in Bali, training to be a yoga instructor.

“I flew back into lockdown and responded to the fast tracking route on the NHS Professionals website,” she explains. “This took me straight back onto the ward at my local hospital in Middlesbrough as a nurse.”

Soon afterwards, NHS Professionals sent her email about openings for contact tracers. She said: “Public health promotion has always been something I’m interested in so I applied and I got a position.” She started training immediately – this involved everything from understanding the coronavirus to familiarising herself with data protection and the various systems used in tracing.

“I was also lucky enough to be involved in some roleplay calls before the system went live.”

Josie now mixes nursing shifts with contact tracing shifts.

She has children and her husband is currently away. Her mother is a designated carer for her youngest (the others can go to school as she is a key worker) but the flexibility of shiftwork suits her well and fits around her family life.

She has already contact traced 10 people. Josie said: “You log on to various systems and you

Next, you call them, explain who you are, where you’re calling from, what contact tracing will do, how it can help prevent the spread of the virus and ask if they’re happy to proceed.”

Next, the tracers take them through a questionnaire on a government website. This asks for details such as where they’ve

been, who has been in the house with them, where they’ve worked and so on.

People can fill these in this questionnaire themselves, but not everyone has a smartphone or is comfortable doing it unassisted. The average call takes about 45 minutes.

Josie said: “I’m really enjoying it. It’s been very interesting to learn about the coronavirus and the systems we use and I’ve had lots of positive feedback.”

NHS Covid-19 app NHS Test and Trace national coordinator Professor John Newton said the project will be enhanced when the NHS COVID-19 app is launched.

He explained that to control the virus we still need to continue with social distancing and good hygiene, but we also now have a comprehensive test and trace service to stop new cases spreading.

He said: “This approach

will allow us to gradually return to more normal personal, social and economic lives while recognising that we have to stay alert and respond rapidly to any advice from the new service.

“Work continues on the NHS COVID-19 app following a successful rollout on the Isle of Wight.

“There has been a positive reception to the test and trace

system on the island with over 52,000 downloads in the first week.

lockdown could see clink close

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The museum on the site of The Clink prison, one of England’s most notorious gaols, is threatened with closure over the coronavirus pandemic.

The tourist attraction in London Bridge has suffered a dramatic fall in its finances since lockdown, as all of its income comes from ticket sales, school bookings and its gift shop.

The museum aims to educate about the history of the former medieval prison, which was established in 1144.

Historians say the expression, “thrown in the clink” comes from the name of the prison, which was burned down in 1780.

Now the independent museum on its site fears it may be forced to shut its doors forever.

“We have suffered a drastic loss of income in the past few months but we still have fixed costs and bills to pay,” state the family-run business.

“We anticipate that even when we can reopen it will be a long

while before our normal visitor numbers resume and therefore the future viability of keeping this local historical landmark open is in jeopardy.”

It fears that without financial support, the educational resource could be turned “into yet another coffee shop.”

The museum is the latest Southwark cultural attraction to sound a warning note about its future as the pandemic forces visitors to stay at home.

The South Bank Centre, the country’s largest arts venue, has warned that it could be shut until April 2021, and may even go bust without government support.

Meanwhile, The Globe theatre – close to the Clink Museum – has told a parliamentary committee that it too may be forced to close permanently unless it receives government support to help it through the worst of the Covid-19 crisis.

The safe homes, in an undisclosed location, is providing crisis accommodation for three months during the pandemic - a time when many other refuges and support services are overstretched.

Emergency funding was provided by City Hall and the charitable foundation the Julia and Hans Rausing Trust.

It has 70 units for women and children from across London - the equivalent of three new refuges.

Since the COVID-19 crisis began, across the UK nineteen women and two children have died as a result of domestic abuse.

Roxana Nucu said Greenpeace and fellow environmental charity Possible are calling for any state support to stipulate that workers must be protected - with no pay cuts or lay-offs - and be ordered to cut emissions rather than just relying on carbon offsetting.

Greenpeace wants airlines to introduce measures such as the frequent flyer levy so that those who fly the most pay the most.

Nucu said: “In Peckham, the fewer planes going overhead and the cleaner air is a good reminder of how much more peaceful and pleasant the world could be if we reduce the amount we fly.

“Personally, in the last couple of months, due to the reduction in pollution, my asthma has got much better and I’ve also noticed how I can

“The airline was the first ever to fly using sustainable aviation fuel in 2008.

Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman has led the parliamentary campaign to stop the so-called ‘fifty shades of grey’ defence from being used in court by killers to secure lesser charges.

According to the activists who set up the ‘We Can’t Consent To This’ campaign, 59 women in the UK have been killed by partners who, in court, claimed they died after consensual violent sex that went wrong.

This defence is becoming increasingly common in UK courts - including horrific cases such as that of Natalie Connnolly, from Worcestershire, who died in 2016.

Her cause of death was vaginal arterial bleeding. Among her other 40 injuries were internal trauma, wounds to the face and a broken eye socket.

Connolly’s partner claimed she was into rough sex and her death was an accident. He was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced less than four years in prison.

Harman says the ‘rough sex defence’ being used in courts now is a modern-day version of men securing manslaughter convictions because their wives provoked them, cheated on them, or nagged them.

On June 3, Boris Johnson told MPs after being questioned on the issue: “We are committed to ensuring the law is made clear on this point and that defence is inexcusable,” but did not give a timeline for when or how it will be banned.

Since then Virgin Atlantic has invested over $17billion on more efficient twin engine aircraft.

“Each of these new aircraft is on average 30 per cent more fuel efficient than the four engine aircraft they replaced.

This investment alongside improving operations has led to an eighteen per cent improvement in fuel efficiency and a 20 per cent reduction in total aircraft emissions since 2007.

“Virgin Atlantic launched a partnership with sustainable fuel tech company LanzaTech in 2012 and after years of research and development, flew the first ever commercial flight using their waste based sustainable aviation fuel in 2018.

“The onset of COVID-19 has led to unprecedented pressure on the aviation industry.

“However this pause in our operations does allow us to evaluate how we emerge from this pandemic and we are fully committed to becoming even more sustainable in our future recovery.”

council’s road changes to encourage social distancing

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The council is proposing a number of changes to several of Southwark’s highways in a bid to encourage social distancing and cycling during the pandemic.

In a document published online on Friday, a series of changes are proposed on major roads including Southwark Bridge Road, Rye Lane, Walworth Road and East Street.

Some of the measures have already been announced under programmes such as the ‘Healthy Streets’ initiative.

Among them include creating an ‘experimental’ one-way segregated cycle lane along Southwark Bridge Road, with some form of segregation expected to be made permanent in the

future.

East Street would see “permeable closures” at the junctions of Blackwood Street and Walworth Place, while a number of contraflow lanes could be installed in the oneway roads surrounding Peckham Rye station.

In the south of the borough, cars may be banned on Carlton Avenue between Dulwich Village and Court Lane.

“The government will begin to ease restrictions, and in doing so, the council should seek to maintain as many of the benefits as possible, whilst helping the borough to recover,” states the report.

“Put simply driving and associated air pollution have been considerably reduced but may return to higher levels than before the lockdown as

people are concerned about using public transport.

“Therefore, there is an urgent need to maintain lower levels of driving and to quickly improve walking and cycling.”

It adds that as more shops begin to open – with most non-essential shops reopening from June 15 – space on pavements will become more crowded for pedestrians, meaning interventions are needed.

The proposals are being circulated to ward councillors for each of the areas affected, to allow for comment on £318,000 worth of proposals.

Man is charged with attempted rape at cemetery in lockdown

The victim, aged in her 50s, told police she had been attacked on Tuesday, May

26, at around 5.35pm by an unknown male. Andrew Poku, 31, from Eversley Road, SE27, was arrested and charged on Tuesday, 2 June.

He appeared in custody at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, June 3, and was remanded in custody.

He will appear at Inner London Crown Court on Wednesday, July 1.

Wooden cladding on a Bermondsey development will be removed over fire safety fears.

Flats and offices in the Bermondsey Square development will have their timber cladding replaced with aluminium cladding instead.

It comes after “deficiencies” were apparently found in the original cladding on the site installed by a

developer, including “combustible cladding” and “combustible insulation.”

“The application follows investigations by the building’s owners that have identified deficiencies in the cladding erected at the site by the original developers,” states a letter sent to the council in April by planning consultant Chris Jones.

These include “combustible insulation, combustible cladding, limited/poorly installed fire breaks and ACM cladding.”

The Red Louro cladding will now be replaced with a particular type of aluminium cladding instead, made of anodised aluminium.

The materials will be a dark wood colour to match the rest of the development, according to council

documents approving the decision last Tuesday.

“The proposal will result in a very minor protrusion, 20mm approximately, of the new and remounted cladding across the building, however this will bear no impact upon the amenity of neighbouring premises,” states a council officer who approved the decision.

“The proposal will therefore not harm any adjoining occupiers’ privacy, access to daylight and sunlight, sense of enclosure or quality of outlook.”

It comes nearly a year on from a serious blaze in Barking, which destroyed twenty flats. Fears over a particular type of wooden cladding used on the block were raised in the aftermath of the fire.

Bells across London will toll at 6pm on Sunday, June 14 to remember those who sadly lost their lives in the towerblock fire.

Among the churches taking part in the act of commemoration are Southwark Cathedral, and St Giles’s Church in Camberwell.

Following the bell-ringing, a twominute silence will be observed in memory of those who lost their lives.

Grenfell United, the family and survivors group established in the wake of the tragedy, has said it means a lot to those who lost loved ones to have churches remember the victims three years on.

“It means a lot to our families and the community that across London bells will ring out in memory of 72 loved ones lost at Grenfell,” said the

group.

“Thank you to all faith communities across London that stand with our community in North Kensington to pay respect and show that 72 lives are forever in our hearts.”

More than eighty churches across the capital will take part, including Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s.

The Bishop of Kensington, the Rt Revd Dr Graham Tomlin, urged the public not to forget those who were affected by the tragedy.

“Nearly three years ago, the tragedy at Grenfell Tower left us wondering how this could happen in a twentyfirst century city like London,” he said.

“We are now facing a very different tragedy in the form of coronavirus, but we continue to ask similar questions.

“As we try to make sense of what we are living through today, let’s not forget that hundreds of families are still trying to make sense of what happened on that day in June 2017.

“Life has not moved on for the families and friends of the 72 victims – they still mourn the loss of their loved ones and seek justice.”

Scouting indoors

Scouts across south-east London are adapting to working as a team online and indoors.

Debbie Jeacock, from South London Scouts, told the News the Scout Association suspended all face-to-face scouting for the foreseeable future on March 18.

Since then groups have been determined to work around the lockdown. Group Scout leader, Andy Smith, from the 3rd Royal Eltham, Royal Greenwich Scouts, took to Facebook to set up a group where leaders across the world could share ideas for continuing remotely.

In under a month the group has welcomed over 3,300 new members who have posted over 11,000 ideas, comments and videos. Many are from south London but also from as far afield as Singapore, India and Canada.

South London Scouts have also introduced new ‘Home Adventures’, ‘Task Master’ and ‘Home

Camp’ challenge badges which can be carried out over zoom meeting, to keep everyone scouting during lockdown.

Initially these badges were designed for South London Scouts but proved so popular that they are now being undertaken by around 5,000 young scouts across the globe.

Eleven-year-old Sinead, from the 23rd Camberwell Scouts Kestrels Patrol, said: “I stopped going to school the week before lockdown.

“Me and my brother were pretty bored but Scout leader Daniel would put on a challenge each day because we can't have Scouts’ meetings.

“Beavers and Cubs get the challenges as well so me and my brother often do them together.

“Lockdown has been going on for over three months so that means that we've had more than 90 daily challenges.

“The very first challenge was to learn about or

draw or make a solar system. Me and my brother made 3D planets out of Lego.

“The funniest challenge had to be the one where we had to make a skit about a camp during lockdown. It was really funny because my brother kept on mispronouncing words making me giggle, and the hardest one was when we had to flick our scarfs from our foot to around our neck. It does sound kind of easy, but it was very hard and frustrating -but I managed to do it.

“We also only had an hour to do this challenge as it was a special one. And we do Scout meetings on Monday evenings by zoom.

“We also had a remote spring camp where we put tents or shelters up in our houses or gardens.

“I put my tent up in our tiny garden although it took up most of the space.

“I cooked all of the meals all weekend and we even had a little campfire with a few candles and marshmallows.

“It's interesting seeing and socialising with people at the zoom meetings because otherwise a lot of my time is spent doing schoolwork.

“Overall it also helped my mum entertain my brother because he only just turned eight and really misses being able to run around outside.

And it's pretty fun.”

The scouts have made a thank you video for the NHS and keyworkers - now seen by 23,589 people across social media.

Camberwell scout leader, Daniel, said: “Every week the Scouts get a new badge set for them to complete should they wish too.

“This, along with the daily challenges, is a great way to take their minds off the current situation, to have a break from schoolwork and complete something they enjoy.

“We are constantly being messaged by parents thanking us for the work we’re doing, saying it’s helping them with some normality."

He is offering free zoom classes for everyone stuck at home or unable to work during the pandemic.

And, while gyms are closed, he’s also posting videos on his youtube channel - including six minute targeted routines and exercises that

More than £1,000 raised by The King of nunhead Nunhead’s Elvis has raised another £524 for the Salvation Army’s COVID-19 response.

The King of Nunhead has so far raised more than £1,400 to help feed vulnerable people and those unable to leave home during the pandemic.

He performed outside Evelina Road’s AG Flowers on Saturday, June 6, with the audience socially distancing with the help of some special tape.

Stem Cell delivery with help from Crystal Palace volunteer A charity worker from Crystal Palace is working round the clock and against travel restrictions and closed borders to deliver life-saving stem cells to blood cancer patients.

A Rainbow over Walworth A Year four Michael Faraday student has created this stunning rainbow over her Walworth home’s front window.

Nine-year-old Thais Wells-Thorpe, from Octavia Hill Estate, created the piece for Thursdays’ clap for carers after gaining permission with landlord Walworth Investment Properties and their managing agent Allsop.

It’s the first time any outside decoration has been allowed on the estate since it was built over 100 years ago.

The estate's founder, the social reformer Octavia Hill, set up art classes for Walworth children and was known for her personal motto: ‘Beauty for All’ - making it a fitting location for such a wonderful tribute to the NHS and our social carers.

Thirty-two-year-old Rebecca Pritchard has worked for the charity Anthony Nolan since 2014, where she helps recruit donors to its register.

During the lockdown she has volunteered as a courier, traveling across the UK to collect cells and then transporting them to blood cancer and disorder patients awaiting their transplant.

Normally the charity has around 50 volunteers, mostly retired who do this work; including overseas collection.

During the pandemic the charity has decided to find alternative arrangements to protect its volunteers - many of whom need to self-isolate - including training up office staff.

Once a donor has given their cells, couriers have just 72 hours to get them to the patient for them to be transplanted effectively.

An emergency ‘handover hub’ has been set up at Heathrow for volunteers to pick up cells from international couriers who would normally go directly to hospitals.

“I have always wanted to courier - although it’s a huge responsibility there’s something incredible about being that link between the donor and the patient and playing a small part in hopefully saving someone’s life,” said Becca.

Comment Hear the anger and make the change

T

he outrage here in Southwark about the murder of George Floyd is an important moment. It is a moment for hearing the anger and determining to make change.

It is about solidarity with black people in the US who face oppression and police violence, but it is also about the anger over the situation here in the UK too, of the everyday hostility and discrimination faced by black people and black men and boys in particular, of structural and systemic inequality, and of the sense that being a black male makes you more likely to be picked on by the police.

I remember after the summer riots in 2011 talking to a young black student who was with his father who had come to one of my advice surgeries about his housing problem. As they left, I asked, as the issue of police/black community relations was top of my mind, how he would describe the

MP for Camberwell & Peckham relations between police and young black men? He paused, clearly not wanting to give me an answer he thought I might not want to hear.

And then he said 'hatred'. That was from a hard-working, law abiding student. That this was still the case years after the MacPherson report into the Met Police handling of the Stephen Lawrence murder and institutionalised racism in the Met Police, showed that the fundamental problems highlighted in that report had yet to be addressed. I challenged our local police on this.

But the same is still being said now, and you are still nine times more likely to be stopped and searched if you are black than if you are white.

It is hard to see how this can change until we have equal numbers of black officers at all levels of the Met, including right at the top. And we are still a long way off that. We need positive action to embark on that change now and that is permitted in the Equality Act. Justified anger needs recognition and demands action. I strongly

back the plans led by the black Southwark councillors to establish a #BlackLivesMatter initiative.

It’s important to chronicle the experience of what it means to be a young black man in Southwark in 2020. Those everyday experiences of racism need to be recognised as fact not swept under the carpet. And there needs to be concrete change to stop it.

COVID has reminded us of the irreplaceable role that BAME people play in our health and caring services, in our retail and council services. #BlackLivesMatter reminds us that is the case despite inequality and discrimination. After the COVID crisis there must be no return to 'normal'. We need to embark on systematic change. The only proof that has happened will be when we see the statistics change to show that you are no more likely to be low paid and in poor housing if you are black. That is so far from the case now. We must recognise the legitimate anger and press forward for a fairer, more equal society.

Locals defend SE15 A column in The Times newspaper has been doing the rounds on social media this week, over its disparaging portrayal of SE15.

The article by food writer Giles Coren who lives in Kentish Town - was ostensibly a review of the Kudu restaurant, but

contained insulting references to “the murder train” to Peckham Rye. According to Coren, if you risked the extremely short 200m walk from Queen’s Road station to the restaurant, you could eventually wind up with “so many stab holes in you” that you would be unable to drink a glass of water. It’s been slammed by several fellow food critics - and normally hospitable Peckham locals have told Coren he’s not welcome back, too.

“I take the murder train to work - pretty safe actually,” responds one. Another added: “I can't speak for the whole of SE15, but perhaps he should save his time and train fare and p*** off.”

Fifth time’s the charm

A Rotherhithe ‘pearly queen’ is to take to a plane in full garb for charity, having been foiled several times by coronavirus.

But instead of going inside the plane, Michelle Thorpe will be walking on the outside of it - saying she is the first pearly to do a wing walk. But contrary to the saying that third time is the charm, this will be the Pearly Queen’s fifth attempt to brave the daring feat. “What can I say apart from hopefully 5th time lucky!” she says. Money raised will go towards a homlessness charity for ex-service personnel.

Letters to the editor I’ve just seen a new report (from Best for Britain and the Social Market Foundation) on the double impact of Brexit and Coronavirus, and feel like I’ve spotted an iceberg on the horizon that everyone else is ignoring.

The report shows that any change to our trade relationship with Europe during the COVID-19 recession will hurt the UK economy. The north west and the midlands regions of the UK would face a disproportionately severe impact should we leave the Brexit transition period without any kind of deal.

Brexit is done and we cannot stop it, but we can protect our jobs, our services and our local businesses. However, our communities are already stretched to breaking point by the Coronavirus pandemic and we desperately need time to deal with that before we can turn our focus to our changing relationship with the EU. Dorchester Court was a thing of beauty - now it’s feels like a slum for residents beset with problems

D

orchester Court was such an object of beauty that its sleek, Art Deco style was commended with a Grade II listing in 2004. By then though, it was already in a bad state of disrepair.

Its eight blocks contain 96 flats constructed between 1933 and 34. They were designed by architects Leslie H Kemp and Frederick E Tasker for a local builder and developer, Mr Morrell.

Kemp and Tasker were lauded cinema architects but in Dorchester Court they created a gorgeous estate with green space, roomy balconies, and epic views across south-east London.

The entire estate was purchased by Manaquel Ltd in the 1959. Since at least the 1970s residents have complained that calls for maintenance, repairs and refurbishment were going ignored - coming far too late if at all.

Stories about housing, service charges, rent and redevelopments are usually controversial and often highly political.

What is striking about Dorchester Court is the general consensus that the terrible state of this once proud structure is largely due to neglect by its owners.

Dorchester Court is a historically significant Herne Hill landmark. It is also home to a majority of renters now struggling more than ever to make ends meet.

And it has suffered from wilful under-investment by an absentee landlord worth £200 million they will never personally meet.

It has cockroaches, failing heating and hot water, and wooden beams holding up the crumbling fabric of the building.

Whatever its managing agents or owners say about reinvestment and their future plans, given the state it’s in now, how could it be described as anything other than modern-day slum housing?

Ch Supt Colin Wingrove, the Borough Commander of the Met in Southwark and Lambeth, said he was personally horrified by the video footage of Mr Floyd’s killing in the United States, which has sparked protest here in Southwark.

“Myself and officers are appalled by what’s happened,” he said. “It’s shocking, it’s a really distressing video to watch and I think that view is shared by everyone.”

Commander Wingrove declined to comment on the government’s handling of the coronavirus crisis and lockdown, but said that his approach would be to explain and engage with the public before enforcement, even as lockdown is eased.

Our COVID-19 research continues

RESEARCH IS an essential part of our ongoing work to improve diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19.

We continue to recruit COVID-19 patients to find effective treatments for the disease. This month a trial participant was the first to be treated with blood plasma from patients who have recovered from COVID-19.

New trials led by Guy’s and St Thomas’ have launched, aiming to tackle complications of COVID-19. The RAVEN trial will test an existing blood cancer treatment, to see if it reduces harmful inflammation in

COVID-19 patients. We are also leading the LIBERATE trial, testing lipid ibuprofen. It is hoped this could treat a complication where patients’ lungs cannot provide the body with enough oxygen.

Patients being treated in our intensive care unit and COVID-19 wards will be asked by their clinicians about taking part in these studies. We can only recruit patients currently being treated for COVID-19 at Guy’s and St Thomas’.

THIS YEAR our annual King’s Health Partners Summer School will take place online for the first time, during the week beginning 15 June.

The week-long programme aims to give experience of science and health careers to year 10 and 11 students from local schools. The School will include online lessons and talks for students.

At the end of the week, participants will give a short presentation on what they’ve learned and anyone who completes the week will be given a certificate and entered into a prize draw.

91-year-old left with ‘no care for 24 hours’

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk An elderly woman who cannot wash or feed herself was left without care for more than 24 hours in her East Dulwich sheltered housing flat after being discharged from hospital with Coronavirus.

Ninety-one-year-old Rosaleen Booker’s family say she spent a whole day without basic care and medication after being discharged from hospital in early April during the peak of the pandemic.

Rosaleen was first taken to hospital on Sunday, April 5 from her flat in

Lew Evans House, sheltered housing with round-the-clock staff on site in Underhill Road.

She was suffering with dehydration and a suspected urine infection. After staying two nights she was discharged on Tuesday, April 7 despite testing positive for COVID-19, as her symptoms were deemed to be mild.

Her daughter, Joy O’Connor, told the News she was unable to find out how her mother - who is completely immobile and doubly incontinent - was responding to being moved from hospital and what care had been put in place.

“We as a family were becoming increasingly worried as time went on,”

she said.

“On Thursday I telephoned my mother’s flat in the hope a carer would answer.

“A member of the rapid response team answered and said she had been sent to care, but was supposed to be with a member of the London Care team who had failed to provide anyone.

“As a result rapid response had to withdraw the care and my mother was essentially left to die as no-one would enter her flat.

“She was left for more than a day with no food, water or medication.”

Joy says she was informed that staff at Lew Evans were unable to enter her mother’s room as she was still infectious. She was also told London Care was struggling with staff shortages.

She claims her mother was given some lunch around 1pm on Thursday, April 9, but from then until Friday evening had no food or basic care.

On two separate occasions paramedics were called back to the home, but refused to readmit her as she wasn’t unwell enough.

On Friday, April 10, Joy’s brother drove from Margate to their mum’s flat to selfisolate and provide basic care - putting his own health at risk.

“When my brother arrived at our mother’s he found her lethargic, withdrawn, not at all co-operative and she could barely speak,” Joy said.

“She needed water and was hungry

and desperately needed changing as she is doubly incontinent. It upset him very much.”

After a few days Rosaleen was feeling much better and up to chatting to family via FaceTime again.

Joy says the care team were back completing essential visits from the following Tuesday - a week after she first left hospital.

In a statement sent to the News, a senior spokesperson for London Care said: “London Care is aware of difficulties that arose in early April following the discharge from hospital of a tenant at Lew Evans House.

“This was a time of considerable challenges in the care sector and we have been working with our partners at Southwark Council to understand what happened in this instance.

“For the avoidance of doubt, there have been no similar incidents at Lew Evans House and arrangements are now in place to allow for the safe discharge of tenants into the scheme, irrespective of whether they have had a diagnosis of Covid-19.

“We do of course deeply regret any distress suffered by the tenant or her family.”

As the News has reported, COVID-19 has posed huge challenges for a sector struggling with lack of funding and huge demand on its services.

In March, hospitals were also told to discharge elderly patients back into

pounds.”

It is the latest action in years of campaigning against the estate’s landlord Manaquel Ltd, owned by Heinrich Feldman who is a Sunday Times Rich Lister worth in excess of £200 million.

One renter, Michelle, said: “I am furious with the landlord for refusing to take the safety and wellbeing of tenants seriously.

“How am I meant to afford to pay back the rent I owe in the future when the industry I work in has been decimated by the pandemic?

“The landlord wants us all to spend years in debt even though he is a millionaire. We deserve affordable homes that are in a good state of repair.”

The estate is managed day-to-day by

property agency company Property Partners, who act as a spokesperson for the landlord.

Despite sending their open letter on May 13, the union has so far only been told that the landlord is open to a group phone call, and has so far not responded to any of their claims or demands.

Four days after submitting a request for comment the News had still received no reply from the company in response to the renters’ claims.

The landlord submitted a planning application earlier this year that detailed plans for redevelopment - including adding new penthouses on the roofs in order to pay for repairs in the existing buildings - work that could see current renters evicted.

In a statement sent to Brixton Buzz, a spokesperson from Property Partners reprtedly said the landlord was “committed to revitalising the development back to its former glory”, said repairs were estimated to run in excess of £10 million, partly due to the estate being listed. They blamed delays on a minority of tenants and leaseholders.

“The general, continuous, persistent and ongoing resistance from these few long lessees has largely contributed to the protracted application, the increased costs of the repair to the building and the delay in being able to commence these much needed works, of which, ironically, they themselves now complain," their statement claimed.

Dorchester Court was first built as a luxury block in the 1930s but is now in a state of abysmal disrepair despite being Grade II listed, and is currently on Historic England’s 'at risk' register.

Residents say they have been campaigning since the 1970s for basic repairs and critical refurbishment.

demands for rent break in ‘dilapidated’ block

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Ninety-six tenants from a ‘dilapidated’ block of flats in Herne Hill are demanding rent reductions, no evictions, and urgent repairs from their landlord, who is said to be worth £200m.

The letter was sent by the London Renters Union on behalf of nearly one hundred tenants living in Dorchester Court, a once spectacular Art Deco block, which residents say is now beset with structural problems, hot water outages, and vermin.

The group want all repairs to be completed by September 2020 to make their homes ‘warm, safe and dry’ - as is a legal duty for landlords - no evictions over rent, and tenants only required to meet half their rent during the pandemic.

Many have been left forced to claim Universal Credit during the pandemic or are struggling after being furloughed or becoming ill.

But despite the Coronavirus crisis and ongoing complainants with heating, hot water, cockroach infestations and wooden planks holding up balconies, they have been told they cannot have a rent break by their managing agents.

The letter from the London Renters Union explains: “Your tenants have been sharing the correspondence they have had with staff at Property Partners regarding rent.

“This has revealed a persistent ignorance of both the timescales of applying for and receiving government support, and the difficulties surrounding eligibility.

“Moreover, even though many tenants are in similar situations your responses to them have been inconsistent.

“Taking all this into account, it is unreasonable and unsustainable for all of the tenants at Dorchester Court to be asked to pay their full rent.

“On top of these present concerns, there is a long history of intermittent provision of crucial services - including hot water and heating - during the colder months of the year.

“Many tenants are also suffering from issues with mould, damp and cockroaches due to a lack of repairs.

“If landlords fail to carry out repairs within a reasonable time frame then they owe tenants compensation.

“Given the length of time you have failed to address these problems, we believe you owe tenants thousands of

the community to free up beds for COVID-19 patients in acute wards.

But many homes and providers have reported PPE and staff shortages and a lack of testing leaving both residents and staff extremely vulnerable.

According to NHS England data, 25,060 patients were moved from hospitals to care homes between 17 March and 16 April - before routine testing was in place.

The latest figures available show around 30 per cent of all COVID-19 deaths in the country so far have been care home residents.

Southwark Council’s Jasmine Ali, the cabinet member responsible for adult social care, told the News: “We are aware of this concerning case, which must have been terribly distressing for Mrs Booker and her family.

“This happened during the early days of the pandemic, with the NHS and care providers navigating new ways of working and trying to care safely for people, during a climate of fear and confusion.

“We have investigated what happened, highlighted the issues and lessons, and we are working with the family, the NHS and the domiciliary care provider to resolve them for the future.

“Mrs Booker is being cared for, and there are important lessons to learn in how the NHS and care providers work together to support vulnerable people discharged from hospital during a pandemic.”

Eight arrested after eight month covert investigation

Eight men were arrested early Wednesday morning after a police operation targeting drug dealing in Southwark and Lambeth.

The eight, aged between sixteen and 26, were arrested on suspicion of a range of drugs offences including Conspiracy to Supply Class A Drugs, Supply of Class A Drugs and Possession with Intent to Supply Class A Drugs.

Raids at addresses mostly in Lambeth saw £15,000 cash seized and a quantity of class A drugs, according to police.

Police said the raids were the culmination of an eight-months long covert investigation.

Southwark and Lambeth’s top cop, Ch Supt Colin Wingrove, said: “The operation today aims to protect communities from the harm caused by drug related violence, safeguard vulnerable and young people, and bring those responsible to justice.

"Drug supply is responsible for a large proportion of violence we see across Lambeth and Southwark.

“We know that this, understandably, is of huge concern to local communities, who can feel threatened and intimidated.”

Gabriela Needs Music for her Body and Soul

Osgood Is Good When Entertaining the Lockdown Neighbours Nathan Osgood is an actor and musician who can often be found entertaining the locals with a couple of pals in venues in the vicinity of his Rotherhithe home, writes Michael Holland...

‘I started playing music when I was a kid,’ he says in an accent that wavers between Brooklyn and Bethnal Green, but which is explained when he adds, ‘My mother was a pub piano player from the East End and Dad an American GI.’ As a military family they moved around a lot. ‘The piano couldn’t move with us so I ended up playing the guitar - easier to carry!’

But music alone was not enough and in his late 20s Nathan switched to acting… ‘The first day I was to go to my adult education place for the drama course, I went to get on the train at London Bridge and couldn’t move off the platform I was that scared!’

He laughs about it now because he grew to love acting and went on to be one of the original players at the Southwark Playhouse Theatre on Southwark Bridge Road, their original site. From those beginnings he says, ‘I was lucky enough then to be picked up by the National Theatre and make a career on both stage and screen.

What is it that you love about your work? ‘Acting wise it’s playing lots of roles that are very different; doing the research to see what makes the character tick… But I am glad I kept playing music too, especially at a time like this where the only gigs I’m doing are for our Housing Cooperative every Saturday outside on our balconies with everyone singing.’

Covid-19 has obviously impacted on Nathan’s life. ‘Massively!’ he cries. ’It will be a long time before theatres re-open and filming is on hold for a good while too.’ And as the world falls apart around us he believes that the post-virus world will be ‘very tough’ with fewer jobs around.

So Nathan plans ahead: ‘I have set up a small recording booth at home to record audiobooks… I think there will be more recording down the line from home, both audiobooks and even BBC radio plays.’

‘But this lockdown time has shown a lot more caring and solidarity between us all, and I hope that continues,’ he says with a smile.

He picks up his guitar and starts strumming. ‘I’ve got a gig on the balcony to rehearse for…’

For Nathan Osgood the show must always go on.

Gabriela Kozyra grew up to be a jazz and Brazilian music singer because, she says, it was ‘predestined… I come from a musical family, especially of singers’, writes Michael Holland...

And I would guess that it would be difficult to be anything else when coming from that background.

From her SE London home Gabriela talks passionately about music: ‘It energises me, renovates me. It challenges me creatively, intellectually, emotionally and physically. It takes me to another dimension. It’s so much part of me, something so natural like eating, drinking or sleeping, something without which I couldn’t live, that it’s basically a necessity. A necessity I love.

It connects past, present and future. It connects space - our beautiful planet. It has the power to unite and to celebrate cultural diversity’. There was more but she stopped herself.

But not for long: ‘Making music, and specifically, singing, lets me create a very special way of communicating with people, both those who receive it and those who co-create it with me.

Working in music is very rewarding (for me spiritually). There is no better way of telling stories, making people reflect and react than through music.

There is the never-ending discovery of the vast world of music, whether it is with regards to the process of creating or studying or absorbing or expressing

it. It gives me a chance to learn about the world and its cultures. And since it’s a universal language, I don’t even need to speak foreign languages to be able to work in any corner of the Earth.’

And when I got Gabriela back down to Earth I asked about the downsides, and she was just as passionate: ‘It is not an easy way of making one’s living, especially when it comes to noncommercial music. People, in general, are receiving worse and worse music education and so their expectations are proportionally getting low. There is more demand for easy-listening (2-3 chord, repetitive: rhythmically, musically and verbally) music and that’s where most of the money goes.

The music industry is profit-oriented and so it provides work for artists who create for masses. The work of a freelance world music or jazz musician is like a never-ending job application: getting one gig is like applying for one job. And that’s only one part of the job. The rest is practising individually, rehearsing with a group, composing, arranging, etc, which is not paid for in most cases. Imagine a cook not being paid for all the hours spent on preparing the food before a restaurant opens. That’s what artists face on daily basis. Teaching for most is what really makes ends meet.’

And that was before the virus came to town: ‘It has impacted me financially and time wise. All of my

performances for March and April have been cancelled. Being a mother and having to provide home schooling for my child, deprived me of the time I had for practising and the creative process involved. Because of the lockdown, I lost a couple of students who preferred not to continue with the virtual lessons.’

What do you plan to do to get through this current crisis? ‘I keep looking into the future. I don’t stop preparing for future projects or sending concert offers to venues. Sooner or later, life will come back to normal and people will be looking forward to going out to concerts.

How different do you think your life will be once we get back to normal?

Economies all over the world will suffer. Unfortunately, art is always the least fuelled of all the sectors during or after any financial crisis, so it will take a long time before my life as a performing musician will be back to normal. And I am afraid that there might be less teaching opportunities, too, as people will be unable to pay for music lessons.’

But even after all that Gabriela ends with this: ‘I am a great optimist. I don’t have a choice, do I? After all, I NEED to do what I do. It’s the food for my body and soul.’

The day sixty-seven died at church

The battered church still standing after a bomb detonated its crypt SEVENTY SIX years ago, there lived a rector at St Peter’s church in Walworth whose bravery and leadership matched his ability with a pen.

During the Blitz the church became an extraordinary focal point for the area. Its cavernous crypt was the most sought-after sanctuary over any Anderson shelter during the daily raids, and no doubt its presence preserved many families’ lives.

But as its rector from 1937 to 1944, the Reverend John Gabriel Markam recalled in his scarcely circulated memoirs that St Peter’s saw its fair share of disasters.

Markham’s memoirs first paint a picture of Walworth as a working class district of 11,000, where rows of terraced houses sprung up along what was Walworth Common in the 1820’s.

It was Markham who volunteered the church crypt to the authorities as a public shelter, just as it had been in World War One. It was first designated to shelter for 230 before the first air-raid sirens rang on September 2, 1939. The crypt ran the length of the church and its insides were supported with four aisles of brick arches supporting the six-inch thick ceiling of fifteen foot blocks of York stone. And there was no water or electricity inside.

“We had all been indoctrinated into this idea that it would all start with a massive bombing of London,” Markam wrote with a touch of humility. But the following months, he said, came to be known as the “phoney war” and the people’s urgency “slipped away” as the sirens fell on deaf ears.

In July 1940, Markham wrote, “the Battle of Britain began”. He neglects to give an exact date, but he says the air raids started “on a brilliant sunny day with the distant rumbling of antiaircraft guns. The sirens wailed… the crypt from then on held anything between 600 and 900”.

What he most loathed about the nightly raids was the “continual drone” of aircraft and “the crash of bombs preceded by their eerie descending whistle and whoosh” which would last from 6pm until 6am. He vividly remembers treading delicately over bodies sleeping in the crypt “like sardines” lying on carpets, blankets and mattresses, while some slept in deck chairs or lay on narrow wooden benches.

But on October 28, the church took a direct hit, and Markham relives the chaos that ensued. From outside in the church yard he saw two bombs crash through the ceiling and “orange flashes” erupt from the windows. “Then I heard

a confused murmur from the crypt, and a dusty figure struggled among the sandbags in the doorway at the steps leading to the shelter,” he said.

Markham gave an estimate of 200 casualties to the telephonist, and began leading the rescue effort with doctors and wardens to get the buried civilians out, and into a make-shift triage at the neighboring school. Next morning there were new estimates of 250 seriously hurt and 70 killed, later confirmed to be 67 dead – including an 83-year-old and a baby of 11 months.

Both “semi-armour piercing bombs” had exploded on the floor of the crypt, having gone through the church ceiling.

One had pierced straight through the church organ, sending shards of pipes everywhere, and detonated next to where a family of six had slept, “blowing them to pieces”.

The blast had “literally lifted the whole church, causing the brickwork to part” and it wasn’t for several weeks until the church could be put to use.

Despite the tragedy, Reverend Markham says St Peter’s remained the centre of his faithful congregation throughout the war. “We were much more fortunate than the majority of the churches in the neighbourhood, which were either completely blown to pieces or burnt,” he concluded.

By Staff Reporter Millwall is appealing to season ticket holders to get in touch before this Sunday, to ensure they receive an individual code for access to livestream games.

With the fixtures now announced for the restarting season, as the Lions take on Gary Rowett’s old team Derby at home on Saturday, June 20th, the club need to ensure they have all up to date email address of the holders. Each season ticket holder will then receive an individual code, giving them access. This is particularly relevant if you usually purchase your season ticket over the phone. If you need to provide your

All fixtures will be played behind-closeddoors as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. 2019/20 season ticket holders will be able to watch all of Millwall’s remaining games - both home and away - for free on iFollow, including any selected for coverage on Sky Sports. Any match not chosen for broadcast on Sky will also be available for all other Lions fans to watch live on iFollow for the regular Match Pass price of £10.

Richard Gould, Surrey’s chief executive, says his county’s initiatives in recent seasons as one of the pioneers of the live streaming service has shown just what is possible even with a modest budget. “As many as six cameras can be operated in an affordable fashion,” said Gould.

“OK, so it won’t be a Sky Sports level production but in the current situation whatever we do will be worth doing.

“Counties could, conceivably, put their

coverage of matches behind a members’ paywall if they wanted to but I think it will be vitally important, to all county supporters and to county club sponsors, to get match action out to the wider public.”

Surrey began live streaming in 2017, synced with commentary from BBC London’s Mark Church and Johnny Barran, and in 2018 introduced a replay function for key moments.

Surrey look to technology to give cricket fans all the action

If county cricket is played at the end of this summer – whether behind closeddoors or perhaps with a smattering of socially-distanced spectators – the importance of live streaming all the action, via club websites or on social media channels, will be a crucial factor in the domestic game’s ‘new normal’.

Mother’s pride as Peckham’s Lexi reaches for stars

By Will Jennings Peckham-based Ty Lloyd-Smith is mother to SportsAid-supported athlete Lexi, who currently represents both Chelsea Women Under-21s and England Women Under-17s having first been scouted by Arsenal Women at Under-11s level.

It’s been a tale of relentless sacrifice and dedication for the pair since Lexi’s emergence.

The early years of her footballing odyssey were challenging from a financial standpoint, and the SportsAid support they’ve received since 2018, particularly through the Backing The Best programme with Sport England, has helped to provide equipment, facilitate travel and instil confidence into her journey.

“We used to have to fundraise by baking cakes, painting kids’ faces, and selling chicken we fried on the barbecue!” Ty, 45, said.

“The SportsAid money enabled us to buy sports equipment, helped with education, funded extra food and now pay for driving lessons, which isn’t sports related but will enable Lexi to get to her football and manage without me.”

Finances weren’t the only obstacle that threatened halting Lexi’s progression. When she first started out playing for Southwark Cribbs FC, after being inspired to take up the sport following a stroll in Peckham Rye Park, she discovered a common reluctance among the boys in the team to pass to her.

It didn’t take long for the tables to turn, however, as the determined young starlet set out on a journey hell-bent at proving her doubters wrong.

Lexi was enjoying a globetrotting tour with her England age-group side prior to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, marauding the right wing on pitches all over the world as she attracted first-team interest from Arsenal, West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion.

But it’s the international set-up where she harbours her ultimate ambitions, targeting a fruitful career as a Lioness as the women’s game continues to exponentially expand.
