Black Lives Matter protestors marched through Peckham on Saturday, calling for an end to police brutality, after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

The unarmed 46-year-old died after being held down by four policemen - one kneeling on his neck - as he pleaded: "I can't breathe".

The peaceful protest in Peckham was held in solidarity with campaigners in the USA, and to highlight discrimination in the UK. Demonstrators held a minute's silence for all those who had died at the hands of police.

Southwark Council’s Evelyn Akoto tweeted: “This is a difficult time for our community. Thank you all for a peaceful protest.”

Star Wars actor John Boyega, from Peckham, has joined the protests. He wrote on his Instagram page last week: “George Floyd. So heartbreaking to hear about the continuous cycle of violence aimed at black people by racist cops. Murder charges only. #Justiceforgeorgefloyd. First post where I’ve had to turn off the comments. Ain’t none of you getting the last word today.

That’s that.”

Further demonstrations are expected on Saturday and Sunday at Parliament Square and outside the US embassy in Nine Elms.

Council left in the dark over local lockdowns

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council is in the dark about how it could enforce localised lockdowns, says its leader, despite government hailing local action as one way to beat the pandemic.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock indicated this week that the government was aiming to move away from national lockdown measures to local ones, after the launch of the ‘test, track and trace’ system.

This system, which went live on Thursday last week, will see contract tracers tell people to self-isolate if they have been in close contact with a coronavirus case.

But council leader Cllr Peter John said he was still “massively concerned” about the pace of lockdown easing – and that the government had not yet told councils what local lockdowns could entail.

“At the moment, I have no idea,” he said.

“Because they haven’t told us, they haven’t communicated it to us.

“Could we shut down streets or estates [if there is an outbreak]? I don’t know.

“It’s the kind of the thing we need to know if we are going to be responsible for local lockdowns.

“If they had involved us from the outset, we would be in a better position now. There’s just simply so many questions unanswered about this.”

Local authority leaders are sometimes only hearing about measures they are expected to implement at the same time as everyone else during the coronavirus daily briefings, he said, sparking frustration.

While central government has ditched its message of ‘stay at home’ in favour of the broader ‘stay alert’, Southwark’s top boss urged residents to continue staying at home as much as possible.

“My advice is still stay at home if you can,” he said, urging caution: “There’s still a killer virus

out there and it’s killed 40,000 people already.”

However, Cllr John told the News that it was safe for schools in Southwark to begin reopening to certain year groups this week, after a process of risk assessments, although parents will not be punished if they keep their kids off over coronavirus fears.

Most schools will reopen across Southwark in a “staggered” process in the next two weeks to certain year groups, he said.

“We can’t force you to bring your kids back at this time,” he said in a message to parents who will not be sending their children to classes.

“Speak to your friends, neighbours and fellow parents who are taking their kids back.

“It might give you the reassurance that you need. Safety and health have to take primary position.”

Under new freedoms from Monday, groups of up to six people can meet outdoors while maintaining social distancing.

The past week has also seen a Black Lives Matter protest in Peckham, sparked by the

death of George Floyd in the United States as a result of a police officer forcing his knee into Mr Floyd’s neck.

Cllr John urged those who took part in the protest to follow social distancing at all times. “If you’re going to do it, please do social distancing,” he said.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

We’re aiming for the pies - arments reopens What impact did the virus have on the business?

Like many other businesses we were initially shocked and struggled to keep up with the constantly changing stream of information. We closed the restaurant as soon as the government’s directive was issued, which obviously had a big impact. As the lockdown extended further into our business, online and Licensed Seller orders surged and we ran our takeaway business serving customers from the door. Amongst other problems encountered, our normally very reliable courier service started to become stretched and some of our orders didn’t arrive on time, leaving a handful of customers disappointed, upset and mildly abusive! At this point we decided to send our own drivers and vans to deliver in the local area, South East London, Kent and Surrey to help ease the pressure.

Everyone on lockdown must be missing something by now, so hearing that, Arments, one of Southwark’s historic pie & mash shops may soon be open again for takeaway service is excellent news, for all devotees of that dish, writes Michael Holland...

The News sat down with owners Cheryl & Roy of Arment in Walworth just after their re-fit: What are you doing to make your shop safe for people?

We are currently in the process of completing a full Risk Assessment in line with the Government’s directive ‘Working Safely during Covid 19 in Restaurants Offering Takeaway or

Delivery’ Below is a list of some of the practices we will be carrying out in order to make our environment as safe as possible for both customers and staff.

Screens erected along our counter between staff and customers.

A queuing system outside of the shop with social distancing.

Two people allowed in the shop at any one time – with a one way system in place through our double doors.

Hand Sanitising Stations placed at entry points for customers and staff.

Social distancing notices and implementation of the 2m rule: along our shop front and inside along the counter.

Staff will maintain their usual high standard of hygiene, with additional measures also being implemented as part of their new routine.

During this period we will not be filling customers’ own containers with liquor We will now be taking card payments as well as cash.

Members of staff to have specific work stations with the 2m distance in place where possible.

Our staff will be wearing washable face masks. These have been specifically made for us in a fun design fabric - London Buses and Hearts.

A brief health check will be carried on all staff at the start of the day.

All staff will receive a copy of the Risk Assessment when it is complete before we return. Any comments and feedback they have will be taken into account, and where necessary, changes made.

All staff will be familiarised with the assessment and trained in the new practices prior to opening.

A deep clean of our premises prior to opening.

We had already ordered screens,

face masks, and had been carrying out additional cleaning and sanitising, plus adhering to the 2m social distancing, and carrying out the risk assessment and displaying the subsequent certificate shows our staff and customers that we are committed to their safety.

How different will it be to eat-in once the Lockdown ends, with the impact of social distancing?

It is not known yet when eat-in will be available again, or what new conditions the Government will ask us to meet. We are, however, giving this thought, so when the time comes that we are permitted to re-open our restaurant, we will adapt accordingly.

Whilst we may not be able to seat as many customers as usual with the social distancing in mind, we are fortunate to have a large seating area.

It may well be that we make every other booth available, there may be screens between the tables/benches.

We don’t know yet. What we do know is that we will make every effort to reopen the restaurant, and every effort to make this as safe as we possibly can.

Will pie and mash ever be the same again?

We can see that the future of restaurants has to be different for some time to come. Our business has already gone through many tumultuous times so this is just another adaption.

And what about on a personal level?

It’s not only been a challenging time from a business perspective but, as for many, it’s also been an emotional and fearful period. Our family and staff, whom we regard as our extended family, haven’t been without their worries. Some of our staff have health issues that potentially put them more at risk; Roy has a frail elderly mother – Rita Arment who is now an amazing 94 years old. Cheryl and Lorraine’s mum, Paul’s grandmother, is receiving palliative care and being cared for at home by her family.

Final words.

Roy and Cheryl would like to thank their staff for all their hard work and efforts. What a team! They have really come together and pulled out all the stops during this unprecedented time. We truly appreciate every one of them. We would also like to thank our customers for their continued support and custom…Without them, we wouldn’t be here.

miracle baby: King’s youngest survivor

Born at 27 weeks, Emmanuel fought coronavirus and is now home

A four month old baby from Peckham has become King's College Hospital's youngest COVID-19 survivor.

Emmanuel Akuamoah Boateng has now overcome being born nearly three months premature and spending six weeks in hospital with COVID-19.

His mum, Evelyn Ntiamoa, told the News how her newborn was kept in the premature baby unit until March 20 after arriving at the end of January; far before his April 27 due date.

In that time, the Coronavirus pandemic had rapidly escalated - and as a precaution visitors were limited at the unit to just one parent.

After being discharged, Emmanuel spent just a week at home with his mum, dad, and four-year-old brother Morris before being rushed back to King’s when he suddenly deteriorated, with difficulty breathing and feeding.

“When he first became unwell we were worried about going to hospital in case he got Coronavirus,” Evelyn told the News.

“It was very unexpected because he had been in the baby unit when he was

born and then came home, and only we were allowed to see him. No one in our family had symptoms. We don’t know how he got it.

“The doctors told us at first it could be sepsis and that he may not make

it through the next 24-hours - this is before he was even taken to a ward.

“When they did the Coronavirus test and told us he was positive, he was put in paediatric critical care and we had to self-isolate for fourteen days and weren’t able to see him.

“The consultant was telling me he had to find medicine he could use for Emmanuel, as some things he couldn’t have because he was premature.

“It was very hard not seeing him and when they told me he might not recover, I wasn’t in my right frame of mind.

“A nurse made sure I could video call to see him, and I called the hospital every day.”

During that time Evelyn, who works as a carer, was at home with her Southwark Council-worker partner and Emmanuel’s brother, who would have been in reception class had it not been for the outbreak and their quarantine.

“After the fourteen days was over and when I was going into hospital to see Emmanuel, his brother was saying to me ‘Mummy, tell my brother I like him’,” she says.

“Once he snapped back and recovered all the nurses and doctors were amazing at reassuring me he was getting better and would make it and come home,” she says of King’s staff.

Emmanuel has now made a remarkable recovery and is back home in Peckham. As the family left the hospital, the staff lined up and gave them a big send off.

“Morris is so excited now his brother is home and keeps trying to kiss him and wants to pick him up,” says Evelyn.

“No one has been able to visit or see him but he has had video calls with his grandma and I’m just glad he is here. I just want to be with him.”

Old Kent Road Towers approved

josh@southwarknews.co.uk The former Carpetright on the Old Kent Road will be turned into two towers, reaching up to nineteen storeys, after plans were approved by the council on Monday night.

The £130m scheme will see two towers created on the site, of ten and nineteen storeys, providing 262 new homes.

Thirty-nine per cent of these will be designated ‘affordable’ homes.

20,000sq ft of retail space will also be included in the two towers.

Separately, a second development on the site of the old BP garage was also

approved, which will see 565 homes, of which 220 are ‘affordable’ in a tower of up to nineteen storeys.

The two schemes are the latest approved for the Old Kent Road, which is the subject of a multi-billion pound regeneration project.

“We are delighted that Southwark Council has approved our plans for the redevelopment of the former Carpetright site into a new £130 million scheme,” said the Avanton’s chief executive, Omer Weinberger, which is responsible for the first scheme.

“The design focuses on creating a sense of community and providing extensive outdoor space for residents to enjoy, which is proving more than ever to be a key priority for buyers.”

Construction could begin as early as next year, and would be due to be finished by the end of 2022.

However, Luke Osborne, director of co-developer Urban & Provincial, said the vacant warehouse meant construction to “start without delay.”

“The development of the scheme will create 120 jobs, to be prioritised for residents of the borough,” he pledged.

Under the council’s Old Kent Road Action Plan, the town hall has pledged to transform the historic road to provide up to 20,000 new homes.

However, much of this development is dependent on the extension of the Bakerloo Line to Lewisham, to provide much-needed transport for the new homes.

Work on the Canada Water Masterplan could begin later this year after the mammoth scheme was formally given the go-ahead last week.

Councillors approved the 53-acre transformation of large parts of Surrey Quays and Rotherhithe in September, despite objections raised over the impact on local transport among other issues.

A formal notice to approve the works was given by Southwark Council last week, with work on three buildings due to start in the coming weeks and months.

According to the developer British Land, this will create 265 new homes, 35 per cent of which are ‘affordable’, a new leisure centre, and office space to support around 2,300 jobs.

However, it added that work would likely be delayed by the coronavirus crisis, and that “we will be reviewing when construction could safely and reasonably begin.”

“Over the coming weeks and months we hope to commence the enabling works and infrastructure,” said Roger Madelin, who is leading on the development.

“Leading onto starting the first three buildings we already had detailed planning permission for. Over the coming months we’ll be preparing designs for new buildings … You will have your opportunity to comment on these as they come forward.”

Mr Madelin said he hoped the masterplan for the area, the biggest planning project in recent Southwark history, would be an ‘exemplar’ of redevelopment.

These three plots form part of a first phase of the fifteen-year project, with planning permission already being granted in outline to other plots in the £3.3bn masterplan.

This means that sections of the scheme will come before the planning committee when there is sufficient detail.

When completed, the project is slated to create 3,000 new homes and up to 20,000 new jobs.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A middle aged couple have been arrested after a man was found stabbed in East Dulwich - after they called police to an assault in their own hime,

At 4.54 am on last Sunday, May 31, 999 operators were called by a woman in her 50s, who told them a man had forced entry and assaulted

her in the home on Hindman’s Road.

Police told the News that she said he attacked her before slashing her partner - a man in his 60s - in the face.

At around 5.07am the same morning officers were called to nearby Crystal Palace Road when a man, believed to be in his 20s, was found with stab injuries.

He is now in hospital with injuries assessed as not life-threatening. The

couple are also not believed to be critically injured.

The man in his 60s has now been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and the woman arrested on suspicion of GBH. They have been released on bail to a date in June.

“Officers are treating the two incidents as linked," a Met spokesperson told the News.

"Enquiries continue to understand the full circumstances."

Stop and search appeal

josh@southwarknews.co.uk The police watchdog has launched an appeal for witnesses to a Bermondsey stop and search – so it can assess whether there was racial profiling involved.

The man, who was restrained by police, was driving a black Range Rover with three passengers. He was stopped in Avondale Square, off the Old Kent Road, in front of St Phillip’s Church Hall on Saturday, May 2 at around 10pm.

During the search, an officer deployed their taser on the man, before putting him in handcuffs and searching him.

The passengers were searched and handcuffed, too.

Footage of the search went viral on social media, prompting concern, and the man lodged a formal complaint.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said there were likely to be many witnesses to the stop and search, adding that

it would also investigate if coronavirus rules were followed. “This incident took place in public view late at night and was likely witnessed by passers-by and members of the public,” said Sal Naseem, the watchdog’s regional director. “The video was widely shared on social media platforms and used by local media outlets. To uphold public confidence in the police complaints system, we will be investigating the use of stop and search tactics in this incident and whether the actions of those officers were appropriate and proportionate and followed approved police policies. We will also investigate if racial profiling or discrimination played a part in the incident and whether any coronavirus legislation was breached.”

Those who did see anything are being asked to call 0800 151 0018 or to email avondalesquare@policeconduct.gov.uk.

The inspectors said they have recovered CCTV, body worn video footage, the footage shared online, and are taking statements from several witnesses.

Peckham business thrives in lockdown

Entrepreneur gets mentored by millionaire business woman

Kim Reddish, the founder of accessory and lifestyle brand Sun and Day an online shop that sells jewellery, accessories and homeware - is being supported by new mentor Connie Nam, the founder and CEO of cult British jewellery brand Astrid & Miyu.

Nam is an ex-investment banker who set up Astrid & Miyu by herself from her kitchen table eight years ago. She is now the owner and CEO of a business with six shops, a turnover of £10m and 80 staff. Online sales have increased 100 per cent so far in 2020.

“Launching Astrid and Miyu was a lonely journey – literally because I was working on my own and figuratively because nobody could really understand what I was going through,” she said.

“We are lucky that the business is in a strong position and will survive the current crisis, but it struck me how much kindness and resilience we have seen from our customers, suppliers and network and as a result of the pandemic.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Extra bins are being placed in parks across Southwark in an effort to stop piles of rubbish from blighting green spaces.

As the News reported last week, Burgess Park in particular has been blighted by strewn broken glass, plastic bags, picnics and even banned BBQs.

Baby wipes, tissues and human excrement have also been found in the bushes as visitors struggle to find somewhere to go while public toilets are closed.

As yet, there is no indication of when they will reopen, with Tooley Street telling residents: “At present our public toilets remain closed for safety reasons; as soon as we can open them, we will.”

Southwark Council says a combination of lockdown lifting, hot weather, bank holidays, and gym closures has led to the number of park goers surging by around 30 per cent.

More bins are now being installed.

Larger trailer bin containers, such as those used in Brockwell Park by Lambeth Council, have had some success in stopping rubbish from scattering elsewhere.

But the problem is cropping up all over the borough - with smaller parks and nature reserves also affected.

On Monday, Brunswick Park Residents’ Association tweeted a photo of paper plates, left-over food, and drinks cans littered around the park with the message: “To the people who had the party in Brunswick Park yesterday. Just who do you think is going to clear all this up?

“There won’t be any rubbish pickup for days. You brought this stuff here, why can’t you take it away and dispose of it? It’s yours so why isn’t it your responsibility?”

Meanwhile, volunteers filmed themselves helping collect yet more rubbish from Burgess Park - as another pet owner contacted the News to say her dog had been injured by carelessly discarded broken glass.

three stabbings in just one week

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A spate of violent attacks have hit Walworth since the lockdown restrictions were eased, with three stabbings in just one week.

On Friday night (May 29) there were two separate violent incidents with a man in his 20s was found stabbed in Nursery Row park at around 10.4pm, and a man - believed to be in his 30s - found with ‘multiple injuries’ on Albany Road around an hour later. There have been no arrests so far and neither victim is critical.

Both incidents came just days after a stabbing in a packed Burgess Park at 6.40pm on Tuesday, May 26.

Two teenage boys, each aged just fourteen, have been arrested on suspicion of GBH with intent, and bailed until a date in late June. It is believed the victim has ‘non lifethreatening injuries’.

Seven days earlier, (May 22), a man was found in Browning Street after police were initially called to Elephant and Castle’s Rockingham Estate to reports of a stabbing, at around 7.39pm. He is also in a condition described as ‘not lifethreatening’.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk All four of south-east London’s key hospital trusts recorded no COVID-19 deaths for 48-hours over the weekend.

According to the latest NHS England data, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Guy’s and St Thomas’, Lewisham and Greenwich University Hospital Trust and St George’s University Hospitals Trust all reported no fatalities of confirmed cases on Sunday, May 31 and Monday, June 1.

Although this data is provisional, and could change due to weekend reporting lags, it was a London-wide trend with eleven trusts in the capital - around half - saying there were no Coronavirus fatalities in the same period.

Nearly 70 out of a total of 217 trusts across England recorded the same.

This is the first time King’s has had two days with no COVID-19 deaths.

As the News reported earlier this month, King’s has the highest death toll out of south-east London’s trusts - with 495 patients lost to the virus.

The hospital has also said it is still seeing admissions of very unwell people testing positive with the disease.

It saw the peak on March 31 with 27

deaths on that day alone.

Lewisham and Greenwich has seen a total of 398 deaths. It first recorded two days without COVID-19 fatalities on May 26 and 27 - down from a peak of 20 deaths on April 8.

St George’s says its death toll stands at 291. It also achieved a seven-day stretch without deaths from May 21 to May 27.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ has not recorded more than one death from COVID-19 on any given date since May 13. It had five days in a row with no deaths from May 16.

The government’s official UKwide death toll stood at 39,360 as of Wednesday morning, but this is believed to be far higher based on Office for National Statistics data - showing a figure pushing closer to 47,000.

On Tuesday, 324 further deaths across the country were recorded.

Southwark remains the fourteenth most affected local authority in England, with 1,272 lab-confirmed cases. But with limited testing in place the true number is likely to be far higher.

The majority of worst affected places are now in the north and midlands.

Cash machine alert

Southwark Police say criminals working in teams are mainly targeting elderly women as they withdraw money.

jump in to press 'cancel' while the user is in the middle of a transaction - often claiming to 'help' their victim.

Having seen the PIN number, they then steal the card and details and take out money in nearby machines.

Victims have had hundreds of pounds stolen from their accounts.

Police are encouraging residents to avoid using cash where possible and use contactless payments instead and to make sure their PIN number is hidden from view at all times.

A phased return to the classroom

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Parents who do not send their children back to school between now and mid-June will have their decision respected, says Southwark Council - as schools begin reopening despite most parents being against the move.

On Monday, 21 of Southwark’s 75 state primary schools, and three of its five state nurseries, started their phased returns after conducting detailed risk assessments.

The majority had still been open throughout April and May for essential workers’ children and pupils believed to be at particular disadvantage by staying at home.

The council says its strategy is a “gradual and phased approach that carefully mitigates the risks and lets everyone settle into the new arrangements rather than rushing to meet an arbitrary date.”

Early findings from a council survey showed the majority of parents do not believe schools should open up again though the exact figures have yet to be published.

On Tuesday, a further 22 primaries and one more nursery began welcoming back more students. All others will follow suit from June 15.

Cllr Jasmine Ali, cabinet member for children, schools and adult care, said: “The decisions on reopening have and will be based on the risk assessments, which schools have developed with input from teaching staff.

“I want to thank head teachers and school staff for their diligence in this matter. I know all schools are making decisions based on their individual circumstances.

“Our priority is making sure our children return to school safely at the right time, not rushing to meet a specific deadline.

“Having received over 1,700 survey responses from parents about their educational experiences during lockdown and the proposed phased return to school, we know there are strong feelings in our

community, on all sides.

“We are aware that many parents have expressed concerns about the proposed reopening of schools, whilst also expressing positive experiences about education at home during the lockdown.

“I want to reassure parents that schools are only starting a phased reopening when they believe it is safe to do so and following careful considered risk assessments.

“Of course if parents still don’t want to send their children to school at the start of the phased return then we will respect their decision.

“We know that the government's own chief science officer warned yesterday that there is little room for manoeuvre, so with the R rate still close to one, rest assured the council’s public health team will be monitoring the situation very closely. We will continue to work alongside schools, and will keep you informed."

Safety measures include ‘bubbles’ with no more than fifteen children, and each class not mixing with any other groups.

Arrival and leaving times will be staggered. Lunch and toilet breaks will also be coordinated to minimise contact.

Schools are also changing classroom layouts, putting more deep cleaning in place, and upping handwashing.

Their schedules are not the same across the board. Each school has written to all parents asking them to confirm if they want their child to return when eligible to do so - on the condition they do not have any symptoms within their household.

Albion Primary invited more keyworker children, or those seen as particularly vulnerable, back to school this week on Monday and Tuesday. Reception was opened on Wednesday, with year six coming back on the 10th, and year one on the 17th.

principal, Peter Groves, wrote to parents that lessons will be given to GCSE students in core subjects - English, Maths and Science from Monday, June 8.

Alongside physical changes to classrooms and the school day, teachers are also working on pastoral support for students.

Mr Groves explained in his letter: “This opportunity to work with subject specialists will have a huge impact on the students’ progress and preparation for the GCSEs in the summer of 2021.

“Importantly there will be a pastoral and wellbeing session to help the students develop as young adults and deal with the negative effects of the COVID-19 crisis.

“I also want them to have the opportunity to have a lunchtime at a social distance with their peers with whom they have had no contact for over two months.

“Additionally, each student will have an individual support session with a member of staff.”

Although some top public schools across the country have said they will not reopen until the next school year, Dulwich College and James Allen’s Girls’ Schools are two private schools in Southwark following government advice.

At JAGS, reception, year one, and year six came back Tuesday after a staff training day held on Monday to put safety measures in place. It also continues provision for keyworker children.

Dulwich College has reopened its nursery, reception and year one, and year six, from June 2 and is now planning contact days for year ten and year twelve pupils.

Studying within a bubble

By Ben Henderson news@southwarknews.co.uk Dulwich College opened to pupils on Monday for the first time since the Coronavirus lockdown was imposed.

Throughout the school day, students will stay within their ‘bubble’ – a group of up to fifteen students and two teachers, and if anyone within that bubble contracts the virus then the entire bubble will self-isolate.

School start and finish times will be staggered, class sizes will be scaled down, the lower school playground will have footprints showing kids how far two metres apart really is, and there will be a one-way system around the campus.

There will not be a coach service, and pupils will be encouraged to car share, walk, or cycle into school, rather than using public transport.

Although the Master of the college Dr Spence concedes that “you can’t pretend that reception and year one children will be able to social distance”, the school’s policy will be to separate those age groups from older years.

Roughly 70 per cent of staff and teachers responded to a survey saying they supported school reopening with the safety measures already listed.

“If you balance the educational, the social, the economic and the health, I think it’s reached the stage now, with the ‘R’ number falling sufficiently in London, for us to say it’s worth going back,” Dr Spence said.

“If infections rise, we’ll close up and go back to lockdown, but we’ll never know that until we’ve tried it.”

He continued:“There are kids who need to get out of the house across the country, be it for their learning, to socialise, or for their safety. If we don’t open, we’re almost saying that we don’t support them. We must also let our parents get back to work. So, even if educationally we don’t have to open this week, I feel – at risk of sounding a bit pious, that we have a moral obligation to.

“Every school must look at its own situation and constraints. If you halved our campus we wouldn’t be able to come back, so I’m absolutely in sympathy for any school that says it can’t.

“I think it’s absolutely right that the government has made reopening optional, rather than giving a three-line whip, as it originally sounded like they would.”

Two hundred families receive financial bursaries from the school, and one of Dr Spence’s main concerns is supporting families whose circumstances have changed due to the impact on the economy.

The school’s leadership team has decided Dulwich College will not make a profit from this term, so any savings will be returned to parents - rather than upfront fee cuts.

This rebate will not be less than fifteen per cent of the term’s fee of £7,082 (£21,246 per year).

And, in what has already been a controversial move, eighty per cent of non-teaching staff, who couldn’t work while the campus was closed, were furloughed.

Dr Spence said a few dozen families have offered to waive their rebate in order to support the school’s new Coronavirus hardship fund.

The hardship fund is, in part, a meanstested bursary for this school term, which can be applied for by parents who won’t be able to afford the fees because of the shut-down of their industry.

Around 200 families are already in receipt of a bursary.

The fund will also pay for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) the school is making for local institutions, and for putting all their learning online.

The school has produced more than 2,500 accredited medical visors using its 3D printers – currently at a rate of over 150 every day, which have been provided to local hospitals, pharmacies and care homes.

A testing centre has also been set up at the school, with the army, to carry out testing every week for keyworkers.

WHETHER THEY were hankering for compost, lawn seed or bedding plants, gardeners were keenly anticipating the reopening of the vast majority of the UK’s garden centres.

And after an eight-week lockdown which made a washout of three of their four biggest selling weekends of the year - including Easter and the early May Bank Holiday - garden centres have been furiously busy getting ready to serve customers again.

Customers can now expect supermarket-style social distancing queues, one-way systems and limits on the numbers allowed inside.

play areas will stay closed and for the time being it will not be a place to while away an afternoon.

Just 90 people at a time are allowed into Bradford’s Tong Garden Centre under rules which allow one person per 1,000 square feet.

Managing director Mark Farnsworth said they were excited, but nervous about “making sure we do everything safely for the team and customers”.

Mr Farnsworth said he expects people to make fewer visits, but buying more when they do, mirroring the way food shopping habits have changed.

Everything has been worked out, so people can get around the garden centre safely.

families under pressure The Maudsley Charity has created a series of bite-sized animations - ‘Families Under Pressure’ - for parents struggling with the lockdown, homeschooling and COVID-19 pandemic.

They're narrated by some of the UK's most famous parents including Danny Dyer, Olivia Colman, Rob Brydon and Holly Willoughby and inspired by mental health awareness week, held earlier this month.

The series of eight videos feature parenting tips and advice from leading clinicians based at KIng’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychhology and Neuroscience, and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

Professor Edmund Sonuga-Barke, professor of developmental psychology, psychiatry and neuroscience at KCL, said: “We are hearing that many families are struggling with restrictions.

This comes as no surprise as research shows that bored and worried children are more likely

to play up and cause disruption, and frustrated parents can over-react to these challenges.

“Very quickly, these sorts of behaviours can escalate and lead to the breakdown of relationships and exacerbation of problems.

“The idea for Families Under Pressure came when I was thinking about how my poor old mum might have coped with me in this situation, as I was quite a handful as a child.

“What advice would she have found helpful?

“These tips were originally intended to support families dealing with the pressures of ADHD and other behaviour challenges but are relevant for families facing the current challenges too.

“I’m sure that having well-loved and recognisable parents narrating and a digestible and shareable format will really help at a time when it is needed most.”

tom allen’s £12,000 hospice quiz

Comedian Tom Allen helped raise £12,000 for St Christopher’s Hospice’s emergency appeal.

More than 1,000 viewers joined the Bake Off, The Professionals host’s live online quiz on Friday, May 22.

Allen, who visited the hospice last year, told those taking part: “The hospice is a wonderful organisation.

“It supports over 1,200 people every day across south-east London but at the moment, with their charity shops shut and fundraising events curtailed, they have had none of that money coming in.

“They are there for you, your family and your neighbours, so it would be great to donate to them if you can.”

63-yr-old lindsay on the wards To mark volunteers week, held annually from June 1-7, King’s College Hospital has paid tribute to all those who have returned to work at the NHS during the Coronavirus crisis - like Lindsay BattySmith, from Peckham.

The 63-year-old retired from King’s in 2014, and is now volunteering at the trust helping with deliveries, hand washing and visiting older patients.

She worked at the hospital for 25 years, specialising in imaging, and helped train radiography students.

“The trust continues to have an amazing energy about it, and though I retired in 2014, there are many familiar faces of colleagues and friends who are still working there - that says something,” she said.

“I still know the hospital like the back of my hand. Throughout the COVID-19 outbreak, the team of volunteers has shown a tremendous spirit of giving and goodwill.

“There are people from a variety of backgrounds all pulling together to make an incredibly challenging situation better for those less able to cope, or who are working long hours on wards and are exhausted.

“I particularly enjoy being the hand wash ‘monitor’ for the boardroom, as I get to meet and greet staff and ask how their day is going.

“I also make a point of thanking them for coming. Delivering mountains of food to the wards was very meaningful, as this act of generosity from charitable donations was very moving.

“I also befriend one of the elder wards, where I try and bring a bit of cheer, and support to the most lonely and vulnerable.

“Staying hopeful and positive during the pandemic is so important. It is all about the tremendous team spirit, and support from the

l&Q create a new food bank

Housing association L&Q has launched a new food bank for people in Southwark, Lewisham, and Greenwich with 190 parcels already donated to people in need.

L&Q staff and residents are among the volunteers working with van drivers from Southwark Council and Fareshare to distribute the food.

Around a third of the parcels were delivered directly to their homes, while the rest were collected from the Lewington Community Centre.

Matt Corbett, Director of the L&Q Foundation, said: “We felt that it was essential to start this new food bank and support people during the

coronavirus pandemic.

“Our duty to help the most vulnerable members of society is now more important than ever, and it has been wonderful to see so many different people coming together to make this happen.

“I’d like to thank all of the L&Q staff and residents who have volunteered to help out, as well as our partners at Southwark Council.

“We are also grateful to Fareshare for providing the food, and to Liebrheer for providing a fridge and freezer for the project.”

The food bank receives and sorts deliveries on Wednesdays and distributes food between 12pm and 3.30pm on Thursdays at the Lewington Community Centre, 9 Eugenia Road, SE16 2RU.

A father and daughter duo who climbed the equivalent of Mount Everest on their home stairs for Nunhead Knocks have now raised more

Seven-year-old May and her dad Ian went up and down their stairs 200 times each day throughout the sixteen day challenge.

In a blog post, Ian said: "The challenge has helped me and my partner, Ross, frame the wider impact of the Coronavirus pandemic to May and our son, Indy, giving them an understanding of life outside of our immediate family bubble.

Vital the government restores public trust after Dominic Cummings scandal

ike MPs across the country I have been contacted by hundreds of local residents in the past fortnight regarding the prime minister’s special adviser Dominic Cummings.

I share the anger of so many of my constituents at Mr Cummings' behaviour and the government’s response to Mr Cummings’ decision to travel from London to Durham while his wife had symptoms of coronavirus, and to then travel over 30 miles to visit Barnard Castle.

This was clearly in breach of the guidance, which the vast majority of people across the country were following.

The lockdown restrictions have had heart-breaking consequences for many people, including thirteen-year-old Ismail Mohamed Abdulwahab whose family were unable to comfort him while he was dying in King’s College Hospital or attend his funeral; and many who have struggled to care for their children while they were ill themselves. Such sacrifices were made on the understanding that the entire country was working together and following the same instruction to stay at home.

The government’s continued defence of Dominic Cummings and his refusal to apologise is insulting to everyone who has made sacrifices over the past few months, putting aside their instincts to be

with their loved one during the pandemic in order to stop the spread of coronavirus.

I am also alarmed that this incident has undermined the public health measures put in place to keep us all safe. At the same time as the prime minister’s most senior adviser is refusing to apologise for breaking the rules, staff in our local hospitals are still receiving new admissions of new patients who are very sick with coronavirus, and people are still dying every day from this disease. It is unacceptable that we now risk an increase in coronavirus transmission as a result of the government’s defence of Dominic Cummings.

It is vital that the government takes action to restore public trust and prevent the largescale abandonment of social distancing. Notwithstanding the actions of Mr Cummings, coronavirus is still present in our communities and it is important that we all continue to adhere to social distancing guidelines to prevent a second wave of infections.

Keir Starmer has been clear that Boris Johnson should have sacked Mr Cummings and following his refusal to do so has contacted the head of the civil service to request a full investigation.

In praise of wildflower meadows

H

ave you noticed the wildflowers springing up wherever grass has been left unmown?

From my window I can see red poppies among drifts of white daisies, against the terracotta brick of the flats opposite.

Normally, before they have a chance to flower, the mowers cut them down in a great clatter and cloud of diesel exhaust.

It is amazing to see what is already in the soil, given the chance to grow.

Meadows provide so much to look at and enjoy, with extraordinary variety in colour and shape, from tall sculptural seedheads to tiny hidden plants. More wildflowers means more food for insects, and more food for birds and bats. Flies and bees are also needed to pollinate fruit and veg on allotments and in urban orchards.

In just 40 years, we have lost around 60 per cent of the planet’s mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians – it has been described as a ‘silent crisis’ in biodiversity.

Creating and protecting habitats for nature within cities, including meadows, woods and scrub, is a vital part of the response, as described in Southwark Council’s excellent Biodiversity Action Plan.

Council parks and estate maintenance teams are working hard with reduced staffing at the moment, and that’s unlikely to ease soon, but although meadows do need management, they take less time and fuel than mowing lawns. There are new meadows in Peckham Rye Park and Camberwell Green, and room for many more on verges and estates. The carefully maintained wildflower meadows in Burgess Park are dazzling in summer and alive with vibrant purple and yellow blossom right through to late autumn, delighting the eye on grey days.

Take action for safer streets

I wrote last month about the need to make space for walking and cycling so we can keep safe while making essential trips and taking exercise.

With or without lock down the waste left in London parks is appalling, no one seems to take any notice of rules, after every hot weekend day the bins are overflowing, if bins are full people just dump their rubbish by the side of the bin, barbecues are left behind, presumably for the barbecue fairy to pick them up and dispose of them. Within our borough boundaries and just outside we have the privileged to have of world class hospitals and the headquarters of the London Ambulance Service.

Those who work for our National Health Service have been the people at the front of the front-line saving thousands of lives and trying to save hundreds more from the worst pandemic to affect our country and our world in the lifetime of nearly all of us.

We grieve of course for every single life lost to this terrible disease. We owe our NHS staff our unqualified gratitude for all their work, skill and dedication in caring for so many. Then we have many care homes in Southwark and the doctors, nurses, carers and support team members and managers who work there also deserve our greatest gratitude and respect. Then we have our GPs and their surgery teams, our district nurses, midwives and community health workers and many people working for our borough social services and national and local health and care charities, like the Robes Project for the homeless. All these are workers who I hope society will value more and reward more fairly in the days ahead. Just as I hope we will value our teachers and school and nursery staff more, now many families have realised how hard homeschooling really is.

I have seen at close quarters the great work done coping with COVID-19 by the Principal and staff of Bacon’s College, where I chair the governors, and by many staff of London South Bank University where I have the privilege to be the Chancellor. Our universities, colleges and schools have been working hard and innovatively in many new ways to support their students.

Others have been working flat out to keep their businesses going to support us too. Near me in SE1 and SE16 the bakers, butchers, fishmongers, greengrocers, grocers, newsagents, and pubs and cafes providing supplies and take-away food

evening because of the discarded rubbish.

It would help if councils actually provided more rubbish bins and emptied them at the end of the day especially at weekends.

Vile people. Disgusting at the best of times, but in this current climate, and all that we now know about what is happening to the environment as a result of this uniquely human destructive behaviour, this should be seen as a serious crime and treated as such. Too soft.

No matter how much information and education you put out there, some people are clearly too thick to do the right thing, or worse just don’t care. We just have to stop these ‘people’ messing it up for everything and everyone else. There is simply no excuse and there should be zero tolerance. I think as a start, maybe everyone should start lobbying their MPs and local authorities with pics and complaints, to try to get this problem to the top of the agenda. After all it’s not just a disgusting, horrific and depressing sight, but this costs us all millions every year to clean up.

and drink have been brilliant. I hope everybody is trying hard to support small local businesses wherever possible. Big supermarkets are great of course but they need our custom far less.

There are however three other groups of organisations, who we have valued greatly for many years but who are now facing a very difficult time. First in the area of the arts. I have worked for many years with the London Bubble Theatre based in Rotherhithe, with Southwark Playhouse now in Newington Butts, and with the Globe and Rose Theatres on Bankside. These great organisations, and many other Southwark theatres and local cinemas, are doing much good work at the moment online but have huge financial and organisational challenges ahead if they are to prosper or even survive. Then there are our sportsbased and other community bodies, like Millwall Community Trust and Surrey Docks Farm, who do so much in and for our local communities. MCT has of course had to suspend our activities – like other local football, cricket, tennis and other sports clubs - and has seen our regular income from coaching, courses, lettings and other activities drop hugely. Surrey Docks Farm has had to keep its gates locked.

Of course, our national and London priorities in the months ahead are to fund our health, social care and the science and research which we as a country need, and to support people who are particularly vulnerable. But we must also work together to make sure other really good and worthwhile activities which enrich many local lives are not lost. This will need us as local residents and local businesses to play our part by supporting these activities even more than ever before. By continuing to support each other, I am sure that after the tragedy of COVID-19, Southwark and south London can and will bounce back.

Government must communicate more on lockdown

A

s the lockdown is eased slightly, the government is pledging local action to tackle any coronavirus outbreaks. We are told that localised lockdowns could prove a

solution to the ‘one size fits all’ model imposed across England on March 23.

“We are attempting to move the system from these national, blanket measures to a more targeted approach,” said Health Secretary Matt Hancock this week.

Theoretically, it means at some point in the future, Southwark could have special lockdown measures to combat any sudden increased number of Covid-19 infections.

But in practice? We simply don’t know. The government has yet to outline what measures this could involve – could your school be closed? Estate shut down? Street quarantined?

These are questions that town hall chiefs, who would be responsible for any localised lockdown, also don’t know the answer to. Southwark’s top boss, Cllr Peter John, tells the paper this week of a frustration felt in local government over a lack of communication from Westminster.

Sometimes, he says, local authorities having to carry out the government’s wishes are only learning about them the same way the rest of us are: by watching the telly.

This is not good enough. We are, as the government’s scientific and medical advisers take pains to rightly remind us, at a critical juncture.

The R rate is only slightly below one, the crucial measure which means cases are shrinking. Deaths are still in the hundreds daily across the country.

Infections are still running at more than a thousand new cases daily.

As we have previously reported, it is our poorer communities which bear the brunt.

This is a running theme. We have before questioned whether it was safe for Southwark schools to reopen this week. Concerns were raised by the council, teaching unions, parents, and schools themselves over making sure they are ‘Covid secure’. And is it really now safer for shielded people to come out of their homes?

This, ultimately, was a symptom of the same problem: that those who should be in the know about changes to the lockdown aren’t.

If we are to make it through this delicate and dangerous phase in the safest possible way, the government must do more to engage with councils and other stakeholders on its approach.

Tower Bridge mystery A mystery has unfolded around one of our borough’s greatest landmarks, Tower Bridge.

A recently resurfaced photograph from 1894 of the tower’s construction team has led to an appeal to help identify those involved.

It’s a mix of workers in flat caps, and foreman in bowler hats, but nothing is known of their identities.

Tower Bridge believes that one of the men might be a superintendent for a steel supplier, but the rest of the men are clouded in mystery.

The bridge has asked anyone who can ID them to contact people@towerbridge.co.uk.

Council Zoom callers from outer space

All local authority meetings are now carried out over video calling software to help combat coronavirus.

It comes with its own quirk: officials at the town hall taking part can choose their own fanciful background, instead of whichever wall in their home the camera is facing.

Examples we’ve spotted so far include a sunny Bahamas-like beach, and one council officer choosing a number designed to make him look like an astronaut in outer space.

Door knocking in Bermondsey comes with surprises

Political figures have been sharing their stories of door-knocking over the past week.

It’s thrown up a litany of horrors from those braving a canvassing session for their chosen candidate.

But perhaps the most awkward tale of them all comes from former Southwark Council leader, Niall Duffy. He was out knocking on doors in Bermondsey in a by-election, he says, when a woman with a young baby answered the door. She asked him if he knew a certain activist. “Why yes,” he responded. “Shall I give your regards?”

“Definitely,” the woman replied. Then, as she held aloft her baby, she added: “10 months ago he knocked on this door at the general election and he hasn’t paid a single penny [of ] child support.”

josh@southwarknews.co.uk The Met has been forced to give six of its own officers a dressing down over the coronavirus rules, after photos obtained by the News appeared to show them gathering in a house for a drink.

A concerned member of the public contacted this paper with the photographs, saying that those pictured were all PCs attached to Southwark and Lambeth police, having a drink in a PCs house.

The group shots, posted on four separate accounts on Wednesday, May 20, appear to show the six officers gathering in a house for a drink.

The event also allegedly appeared on one of the PCs Instagram story. The News is choosing not to name those involved.

Lockdown rules forbid people from

separate households mingling indoors to prevent the transmission of coronavirus.

As of Monday, the rules state that six people in total can meet other people from a 2m distance outdoors at a time.

The Met Police was asked by this paper to confirm whether all six pictured were officers, and whether they had been sanctioned for the apparent flouting of the rules.

A spokesperson for the force confirmed that the six officers involved had been “strongly reminded” about the need to follow the rules, adding coppers are not above the guidelines.

“The officers involved have been strongly reminded that they must respect the guidelines,” said the force.

“Police are not above government guidelines around social distancing.”

The Met confirmed that the officers were attached to Central South Command, which covers Southwark

and Lambeth.

A couple of the accounts which were public have since been made private following questions put to the police, including one dedicated to a dog who also features in the photos.

Officers have responsibility for upholding the coronavirus lockdown among the public, with the power to levy fines of up to £100.

The news comes after widespread anger surrounding Dominic Cummings over an apparent lockdown breach in which he drove to Durham to seek childcare.

The Prime Minister’s chief adviser denied breaking the rules in an extraordinary press conference, but polling has shown that a majority of the British public think he did in fact break the rules.

It led to accusations from opposition that the coronavirus lockdown is “one rule of them and another for us.”

An influential post-punk band will release an EP in memory of their deceased bandmate – with all profits going to Guy’s and St Thomas’ who cared for him.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A man and woman were rescued from a fire in a Rotherhithe New Road block of flats last Thursday night.

The pair were led to safety from the fourteenth floor while wearing fire hoods to protect them from toxic smoke.

Fifty residents were evacuated from the building after the blaze started at around 9.46pm, on May 28, with one woman treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Sixty firefighters had the fire under control by shortly after 11pm. The brigade says the cause is under investigation.

An electrical cable in the lift shaft between the seventh and tenth floors has been destroyed.

Part of the lift car on the fourteenth floor has also been damaged.

Fire at Southwark integrated waste management facility A fire at the waste management facility in Bermondsey's Devon Street is also now under investigation.

The brigade said sixty firefighters worked for three hours, under 'arduous' conditions to bring the fire under control.

They were called to the site on Friday, May 29, shortly after 3pm.

Part of a single-storey unit, containing 200 tonnes of domestic waste, was damaged by the outbreak.

Fifty residents had to be evacuated

The Gang of Four’s songwriter and guitarist, Andy Gill, sadly passed away in St Thomas’ after contracting pneumonia in February. He had first become a patient after being diagnosed with a rare inflammatory condition in 2012.

The band were among the most influential in the late seventies postpunk movement, with their debut ‘Entertainment!’ being listed as one of Rolling Stone’s greatest albums of all time.

Surviving members of the band have joined up with Mr Gill’s wife, Catherine Mayer, to celebrate the talented musician’s life by releasing music in his name.

The EP ‘ANTI HERO’ will be released on July 19, featuring a new single ‘Forever Starts Now’, with all proceeds going to Guy’s and St Thomas’s Charity.

“The kindness and expertise demonstrated by the whole St Thomas’ team is something none of us will ever forget,” said his wife, Catherine.

“Nothing can prepare you for losing the person you love most in the world, but I carried away from those dark days the comfort of seeing the care given to Andy by the incredible critical care staff – the highly skilled nurses and doctors, the caterers and cleaners.”

“We could all see how tough their jobs are and how vital.

“By giving to the charity, we want the whole team to know they make

a difference – and we hope to make a difference to future patients, in loving memory of Andy.”

The second single ‘Day Turns To Night’, to be released on June 26, was written by bandmade John Sterry just days after Andy’s death.

“I had no intention of it being about him. It just came out that way and also I didn’t intend for it to be released,” he said.

“I often cloak lyrics with ambiguity and this felt too raw. But listening now, I’m glad I wrote it with no thought of where it might go – it’s just a pure distillation of the years I’d spent with Andy and the band.”

Artwork for the release has been designed by Sherpard Fairey – the artist who designed the iconic Barack Obama ‘Hope’ image.

He said that he was “devastated”

by Andy Gill’s passing, but that he hoped the portrait of him would serve as an iconic image of a personal hero.

The first single from the EP, ‘Forever Starts Now’ can be streamed on Spotify now.

what’s on Southwark Park Galleries Prepare to be Better and Stronger

Judith Carlton’s mum always took her to galleries and museums when she was growing up, writes Michael Holland...

‘It was something to do and somewhere to go to clear our heads,’ she remembers now, ‘so I grew up enjoying these places and how they let me imagine all kinds of other worlds out there.’ Those dreams of other worlds eventually led to Judith becoming the Director of Southwark Park Galleries, a contemporary art gallery in the heart of Southwark Park across two sites (Lake Gallery & Dilston Gallery).

Volunteering at those Newcastle galleries when she was old enough led to ‘a degree in Art Gallery & Museum Studies in Scotland which trained me up with vocational skills on how to run museums, care for collections of objects and artwork, and perhaps most crucially how to fundraise!’

Her role is a dream come true. ‘I love working with artists; it is very special to get to work so intensely with an artist, getting access to that deep insight of how they work, how they make, how they think, and the responsibility of doing all we can to support them to make their most ambitious, often career-defining work to date.’

Her passion was intense. ‘Sometimes we work with an artist for two or three years on one exhibition… Developing an exhibition from an idea together is fascinating and very rewarding when you finally open the exhibition and get to experience it with everyone. This is a special journey you never get tired of, anyone working in the culture sector

is extremely lucky to play a tiny part of that; and the responsibility you have keeps you on your toes, always making sure it's the best it could possibly be and couldn't be done anywhere else.’

But Ms Carlton’s joie de travail begins before she arrives at the gallery: ‘I also love coming to work - walking through our beautiful park throughout the changing seasons and then through our gallery's garden into the office, we are very lucky to work here. The park and its visitors influence how we approach exhibitions and our free education and gardening workshops; always opening up new ways to interact with our neighbours and communities in Southwark. I love seeing 'old friends' return every year, like the beautiful purple irises that have just bloomed by our garden gate a couple of weeks ago, and the ducks who until recently used to nest in our garden.’

She drifted away in a paean to the gardeners, animals, plants, parks in general and Ada Salter: ‘We have so much to thank Ada for,’ she opines before I had to break the spell.

How has Covid-19 impacted on your profession?

‘It immediately meant the postponement of all our exhibitions, our much loved education programme and live events, one of which was just about to launch. It was of course very disappointing to have to postpone but there was obviously no choice, it had to be done quickly and responsibly to ensure everyone was safe.’ The smile had all but disappeared.

‘We are a very small team and have adapted well to working from home. We are using our daily exercise allowance to visit the buildings and maintain our garden. We have a lot of work to do regardless of where we are having to do it from, such as our constant need to fundraise; Covid-19 hasn't stopped that!’

To keep audiences engaged the gallery has launched a new podcast series called Lockdown Elevenses, where you can hear directly from the artists whose shows have been postponed but continue to make their work from home. ‘It will be a good way to get to know the artists before their exhibitions eventually open later in the year and in 2021,’ explains the director, adding, ‘We will be launching other new strands of digital activity to stay in touch with our audiences and artist family over the coming weeks; looking at our history in the park, our archive, previous exhibitions, talks and performances, etc.’

In these strange times there is a distinct air of positivity about Carlton. The team is already establishing responsible exit strategies for when they can reopen the buildings safely.

‘We will continue working hard to fundraise and keep the organisation strong and resilient, so that we will bounce back ready to go. The exhibitions and plans we have are keeping us focused on the future which is very important, to be able to look ahead.’ No one could disbelieve her. I wanted to listen to Judith talk about the art and flowers and Ada Salter again, but felt it best to finish with these powerful words: ‘I tvhink as a team we will be stronger than ever, we will return focused and driven to be even better than before. It will be interesting to see how we as a society and local community change following this, how will we interact and use our public spaces together, which we have been so restricted from? I sincerely hope that we as a community will be kinder to each other, be better neighbours, better friends and learn from this truly dreadful period in our lives.’

When Mother Earth is Angry Alice Sends Out Love Alice Bird became an actress because, she reveals, ‘Art and school plays were the only thing I liked at school’, and since those early days when her mother sent her to drama school after she cried when the stage was being taken down after a school production, she has won awards and starred in top TV shows and films, writes Michael Holland...

Alice has always lived in Rotherhithe from where she travelled to attend classes at at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Italia Conti before going on to complete a BA (Hons) in Acting at Rose Bruford College.

Since graduation, Ms Bird, as well as acting, also produces, directs and

teaches. She loves her work, she says, because of ‘The way it provides a playground for my imagination to romp about in.’

That playground led to the role of Lizzie in Footballers' Wives: Extra Time and a part in Notes on a Scandal, playing alongside Judy Dench and Cate Blanchett.

Alice’s career, unsurprisingly, has also provided her with a list of highlights: ‘Playing Bill Nighy’s daughter and having an argument with him over the Christmas dinner table… Our film getting premiered at Toronto International Film Festival…

teacher Bathsheba Garnett in a little room and being able to continue her work with our students.’

And those moments of happiness are balanced out with just one regret: ‘Getting down to the last two people to play the lead in 28 Weeks Later.’ A film mentioned a lot in recent weeks for its similarity to the current empty, desolate London streets.

But with all filming on hold and theatres closed what is an actor to do? ‘I’m actually busy,’ begins Alice.

‘I made two music videos with singer Stella Angelica just before lockdown, so have been editing those. I’ve co-facilitated our Zoom ‘Dance With Me’ workshop and been preparing for our ‘Act Without

Acting’ online workshop…Plus, I’ve been gardening.’

But even while keeping busy during these strange times, Alice has no false hopes for a quick return to the old ways. She says pensively, ‘I’m not sure if life will ever be quite the same; I’m hoping, collectively, this period has provided some introspective space and connection time with our Mother Earth - It seems she’s put her foot down.

And until such times when we can interact a little more Alice has this message: ‘I’m sending the community here love and warmth in these uncertain times. Even though we can’t meet I feel your presence around.’ www.alicebird.co

The REAL Great Fire of London

The 1212 blaze that has been extinguished from history

People flee from a fire on London Bridge Everyone knows about the Great Fire of London – or, at least, they think they do.

A huge blaze in 1666 devastated the city, destroying 13,200 homes, 87 churches and St Paul’s Cathedral.

Temperatures in Pudding Lane, where the fire began, reached 1700 degrees Celsius during the peak of the inferno, while smoke could be seen as far away as Oxford.

But while it was certainly a huge fire, only six deaths were recorded. While nothing to be sniffed at, this death toll pales into startling insignificance when compared with a far, far more deadly blaze that occurred in the city several hundred years earlier.

On July 10, 1212, up to 3,000 people are thought to have perished in a terrifying fire that broke out in Southwark, before crossing London Bridge into the City. Around 7.5% of the city’s population perished in horrific circumstances – the equivalent of 637,500 people dying in a fire today.

For hundreds of years this blaze was known, rightly so, as the Great Fire of London. It is only the passing of the centuries that has extinguished the memory and devastating impact of the single deadliest fire in British history.

Also known as the Great Fire of Southwark, the blaze took place in a London very different from today.

London Bridge was unrecognisable from its present day form, with the bridge packed with huge wooden tenement blocks and shopping quarters.

Historian Toni Mount sets the scene in her book Everyday Life in Medieval London: “Shops and houses crammed both sides of the narrow thoroughfare across the river, their upper storeys

jutting out, some even adjoining their opposite neighbour, enclosing the road beneath and making it a gloomy tunnel, restricting the light.”

Shops, as many as 67, crammed the bridge at the time of the fire, seeking to make the most of the generous

foot traffic passing across the filthy Thames. It was this packed, jigsaw arrangement of wooden homes and shops that would prove fatal to so many.

Unlike the second Great Fire of London, which has been traced to

a single oven in a single bakery, the cause of the 1212 blaze is unknown.

All that can be determined from records is that at some point on that July afternoon, a portion of Southwark – then known as South Warke – was suddenly ablaze.

The church of St Mary Overie was destroyed, while much of Borough High Street was levelled. Residents of Southwark, forced north by the blaze, fled onto London Bridge and started making their way across. On the bridge, along with the usual thronging crowd of traders and residents, were people rushing south from the City towards the fire.

While it may be kinder to say that the crowd were hurrying to help extinguish the fire, as undoubtedly a number were, it can be assumed that a huge number were more interested in rubbernecking as the blaze destroyed the north of the borough.

The bridge, crowded at the best of times, was suddenly as packed as it had ever been since it was constructed three years previously. The conditions in the narrow streets must have been horrific, with the huge crowd jostling for space and panicking livestock destroying stalls and shops.

When a fierce wind carried sparks across the bridge, sparking a fire at the northern end of the bridge and trapping thousands of people in the dark, crowded alleys, the scenes must have turned hellish. The fire ate its way inwards from both ends of London Bridge, pushing the desperate residents closer and closer into the depths of the bridge.

A huge number of people died from the flames and smoke, others from the crush and others – with a heavy and

tragic dose of irony – drowned in the rushing but useless water beneath the bridge.

Ms Mount said: “Boats on the river tried to rescue those who were trapped on the bridge, but so many terrified people jumped into the boats that many were capsized or sank, drowning the crews along with those they tried to save.”

When the fire burned itself out and the smoke lifted, there was not much remaining on the bridge other than its stone foundations. All the houses were destroyed, along with a chapel, while there was little trace left of those unfortunate souls who had been unable to escape the bridge.

Ms Mount said: “Afterwards, half-burned bodies were found in the wreckage of the buildings, often no more than piles of ashes, unidentifiable. For years afterwards, although still usable as a means of crossing the Thames, London Bridge remained a partial ruin, with no money for repairs.”

Thatched roofs were banned that year but it was too little, too late. In truth, London did not respond in any real way to ensure that such a blaze never happened again. In the 17th century, in the lead-up to the second Great Fire, fires were still being fought with buckets and hand-held pumps.

In the end it was the blaze in 1666 that changed the capital’s mindsight and helped develop a thought-out firefighting system. For the 3,000 people who died in the flames and the water in July 1212, however, these developments came far too late. The tragedy of the fire is that the huge loss of life was not only unnecessary but has now also been forgotten.

By Staff Reporter news@southwarknews.co.uk Ben Thompson says the Lions squad is buzzing to get back, with an eye on securing a top six spot as the season gets underway again.

As reported last week, the EFL has confirmed that the Championship will resume on June 20th, with the club now waiting on a fixture schedule, as well as an update on how the behind-closed-doors matches will be made available to fans.

And speaking to the club’s website, the 24-year-old midfielder says that everyone reported back to small group training this week fit and ready to go. ‘Everyone can see it’s a great opportunity for Millwall Football Club’, he said. ‘Everyone’s fit, noone’s slacked off.’

Undergoing ankle surgery back in December, Thommo was almost back to full fitness before suffering a setback when his quad went, and while nobody would have wanted the current situation with the pandemic, it has given him a chance to be a part of the run-in of the season.

‘It’s been a long time – time’s gone so slowly’, he admitted. ‘I’ve been occupied with my little one, but I’m desperate to get out on the pitch’. Having only played a few games under new boss Gary Rowett before his injury, in a new role just behind the strikers, he

felt he was learning and adapting his game - but concedes he will have to re–establish himself, and ‘hopefully push myself into a starting eleven when we get back started’.

Recovery has been harder, as the gym at Valmont Road has been closed, and Ben doesn’t have a gym at home, instead relying on Zoom sessions with sports scientists, and lunges and squats, and practising passing as much as possible. This week saw the reintroduction of small group training in groups of five, and Thommo revealed how the new set up is just about getting out on the pitch, with no unnecessary contact: ‘You get in, get tested and you’re out on the training pitch. Then after you’re straight back in your car and off you go. But we’ve been able to do sessions that we’ve not been able to do at home – small possession groups, passing drills. It’s progression and hopefully we’ll progress more in the coming weeks.

‘I can’t wait to get back out on a football pitch and play a proper game. I’ve still got a bit of fitness to gain, a little bit more ball work.’ And he added that whilst the team thrived on the hostile atmosphere of a home game at the Den, even without fan support, ‘we’ll be ready’.

Keeper Frank Fielding is also available again, recovering from an arm injury, whilst Jed Wallace is still a doubt with a knee injury.
