katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Neil Coyle has been given a new role in the House of Commons after being appointed to join the Foreign Affairs Select Committee.

He is one of eleven backbenchers responsible for examining the Foreign Office’s expenditure and work, and the UK’s participation with international bodies including the EU, UN and NATO. The committee will also assess the UK’s foreign policy and how COVID-19 has impacted international relations. The UK’s withdrawal from the EU is also a major strand of work likely to be affected by the ongoing global crisis.

The Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP, who represents one of the most diverse constituencies in the UK, told the News: “The people and organisations of our community in Southwark have a global impact and now I can hope to match it."

Coyle officially joined the committee on May 11. He also continues in his role on the Work and Pensions Committee, where he has lobbied for changes to Universal Credit and is now calling for better protection for workers from COVID-19.

The app is being trialled in the Isle of Wight as part of the government’s transition from the lockdown, where it has been downloaded by about half of residents.

Harman has now published the draft legislation, in the hope it can gain traction and be debated before a nationwide roll out of the app.

“We need protection in law for the data gathered. The contact tracing app involves unprecedented data gathering.

“There must be robust legal protections for individuals limiting what that data will be used for, who will have access to it and how it will be safeguarded from hacking.

“Parliament was able quickly to agree to sweeping powers on social distancing and lockdown.

“It is perfectly possible for parliament to do the same for legislation to protect privacy before national rollout of the app.”

Piers Corbyn arrested

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Walworth activist Piers Corbyn was arrested at an anti-lockdown protest in Hyde Park on Saturday while claiming 5G worsens COVID-19 symptoms and ranting against vaccination.

The conspiracy theorist, a well known man-made climate change denier, was one of around 50 people to gather at Speakers’ Corner protesting against what they say is a crackdown on civil liberties during the pandemic.

Corbyn, the brother of the former Labour leader, is most recognised in Southwark as being an ex-councillor and for his long-running activism against regeneration and support of

housing rights.

The protests are believed to have been coordinated by a group calling themselves the ‘UK Freedom Movement’, with similar protests planned in Manchester, Leicester and Southampton.

Police have claimed the group, and similar antilockdown groups, have links with the far right.

Earlier this month Piers Corbyn was in Glastonbury, Somerset, protesting the lockdown and claiming COVID-19 had been exaggerated so malevolent forces could impose a ‘new world order’.

One of Jeremy’s Corbyn’s three sons, and Piers’ nephew, Tommy, tweeted: “Can I just say; Piers Corbyn speaks for Piers Corbyn and only Piers Corbyn… every family has a Piers I’m sure.”

82-year-old Diana & her dog, Dido, hope to raise £1,000 for NHS litter picking

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk An 82-year-old great-grandmother has been using her daily walk with her dog to litter pick, while also raising money for Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals.

Diana Mukuma, from Kennington, normally volunteers at St Thomas’ with her dog, Dido, a five-year-old greyhound.

The pair visit patients on the wards to cheer them up, but since the start of the coronavirus outbreak, they have been forced to stop.

Now Diana and Dido have been picking up a minimum of thirty pieces of litter every day for thirty days around Kennington to raise money for the hospital.

“The extraordinary staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’ are pulling together to care for patients so I wanted to give something back to them,” said Diana, who has been volunteering at the hospital for eight years.

She hit upon the idea for novel fundraising because she realised: “I’m not into doing press ups or running, nor am I handy at sewing or baking.”

Instead, said Diana, “we’ll be picking up a minimum of 30 pieces of rubbish every day for 30 days along Lambeth’s streets and parks come rain or shine.”

Diana, who has nineteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren, added: “If you should spy an elderly lady, with bright red hair, walking an elegant greyhound whilst picking up odd bits of rubbish with a grab stick and a black bin bag – that’ll be me and Dido.”

With the help of her granddaughter Thaïs, the duo’s exploits are now being detailed daily on Instagram.

So far, the pair have raised more than £800 for the hospitals, and aim to reach £1,000 by the end of May. Catherine Hart, Director of Fundraising at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “We want to say a big thank you to Diana and Dido, and everyone supporting Guy’s and St Thomas’.

One teen has been charged with murder

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A seventeen-year-old has been charged with the murder of Bermondsey nineteen-yearold Francois Kablan.

Francois, of Amina Way, was found with stab wounds in Great Dover Street last Wednesday evening.

The young footballer was sadly pronounced dead at the scene after cops and paramedics arrived at around 5.30pm.

A seventeen-year-old boy who was arrested on the same day as the killing was charged with murder on Saturday, May 16. He was also charged with possession of an offensive weapon.

Another boy, aged fifteen, was also charged with possession of an offensive weapon. The pair were due to appear in Bromley Youth Court on Monday.

A sixteen-year-old boy was also arrested last Friday on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

A twenty-year-old man and eighteen-year-old woman who were arrested on suspicion of murder last Wednesday have also been released on bail.

They are due to return at a date in late May, say police.

A GoFundMe page has been established in the wake of Mr Kablan’s death, to help pay for his funeral costs.

Teammates have paid moving tribute to the stabbed Harlow Town FC footballer on the page.

“RIP Francois,” read one. “Had the absolute pleasure of playing alongside you. A life gone too soon and condolences to your family.”

At the time of writing, the appeal had raised nearly £3,500, well over an initial £1,000 goal.

Recycling centre re-opens

To use the service residents need to apply online for an allocated time slot.

The council says trips should only be made if ‘essential’ and social distancing must be followed during visits.

said: “We have worked very hard with Southwark Council to carefully plan the reopening of the site, to ensure it is a safe place to work for our team and residents to visit.

Less than a third of local residents have a garden

'Distance Dining' in neighbouring Greenwich is working a treat The Greenwich Co-Operative Development Agency’s programme head Gary Mack is finding inventive ways to keep up his culinary connections during lockdown.

Gary, who joined the GCDA as a volunteer five years ago, has always had a passion for food and loves cooking up a storm for big gettogethers. When lockdown was announced, he soon realised that he, like many of his friends, depended on food for his sense of well-being and so he came up with the idea of Distance Dining to help prevent isolation.

“I really missed the sense of community that comes from sharing food, something that’s always been at the heart of what GCDA is

about. Initially I was dropping off essentials to a few friends whilst doing my daily exercise or weekly shop, but soon I started adding in little treats, like some homemade

bread,” he said.

“I asked some of those living close by if they’d be interested in preparing one communal dish a week and splitting it into portions to share and was surprised when they all jumped at the chance! I ordered us glass containers which can go straight into the oven and we time deliveries to fit in with our work commitments, dropping off at a distance. We now have five home-cooked meals a week and love sharing our reactions to each other’s food. It’s really helped us all feel cared for – a hug on a plate.”

mayor says he might ban cars from London Bridge and waterloo bridge

josh@southwarknews.co.uk London and Waterloo Bridges may become car-free under plans announced last week by the Mayor.

Under the radical transformation, parts of central London would become car free, with pavements widened for pedestrians, to help with social distancing.

Some streets would become walking and cycling only, with others also permitting bus use. Among the areas marked out to be potentially limited are streets between London Bridge

and Shoreditch; Euston and Waterloo; Old Street and Holborn.

Access would be maintained for ambulances and disabled residents, says the Mayor’s office.

TfL said it was looking into zeroemission taxis to be allowed access to the two bridges under the proposals.

“These plans will transform parts of central London to create one of the largest car-free areas in any capital city in the world,” said Mayor Sadiq Khan.

“If we want to make transport in London safe, and keep London globally competitive, then we have no choice but to rapidly repurpose

London’s streets for people He urged Londoners to continue avoiding public transport wherever possible, but added: “I fully appreciate that this will be incredibly difficult for many Londoners. It will mean a fundamental reimagining how we live our lives in this city.”

It comes as the Congestion Charge and ULEZ was reinstated from Monday.

As part of conditions set upon a £1.2bn government bailout of the London transport network, the Congestion Charge could increase to £15 and be in operation from 7am to 10pm, every day of the week.

The figures, from the Office for National Statistics, reveal that two thirds of people living in Southwark homes have their own private garden overall.

This is lower than both of our neighbouring boroughs, Lambeth and Lewisham.

And while some Southwark postcodes are nearly guaranteed to come with a private garden attached to the property, for others this is a luxury.

The data splits the borough into 34 areas, called ‘MSOAs’. It reveals that residents living in areas surrounding Borough and Southwark Street, and North Bermondsey respectively, are the

least likely to have their own private green space, at just 29 per cent of residents.

Private gardens are classed as those to which a house may have singular access , or communal gardens shared between a block of flats.

But nearly everybody living in Herne Hill and Dulwich Park, and East Dulwich, have their own private garden, with 95 per cent of residents enjoying the space.

Gardens are also smaller in the capital than anywhere else in the country, with residents having access to 80% of the space that others in the country enjoy on average.

However, Londoners are more likely to live within a short walk to a public park than anywhere else in the country.

According to the ONS, nearly 60% of us live within a five minute walk to a public garden, playing field or park.

Cafe closes after two floods, fire and now coronavirus

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A little Bermondsey boy who seemed only hours from dying has recovered just in time for his first birthday - with his dad stepping up to donate part of his liver.

Tommy Collins was born on Monday, May 20 last year in St Thomas’ Hospital.

But by the Thursday, aged just four days old, he began having life-threatening seizures and even slipped into a coma.

Dad Alfie, 27, was rushed to the Evelina neonatal intensive care unit with new-born Tommy while mum Maisie Davies was recovering on the maternity ward from the caesarean.

“It felt like the longest walk of my life.

And when I walked in, he was on this cot-bed with a heater on it, he was on all sorts of machines,” says Alfie.

“It was overwhelming. They explained everything that was happening with Tommy and then it hit home - I might not be able to leave the hospital with my son.”

Tommy’s condition was revealed to be a rare metabolic disorder, which meant his body could not process ammonia - effectively poisoning his blood and attacking his brain.

“For most people the ammonia level is below fifty,” explains Alfie. “When they tested him, it was three thousand.

When we tell doctors now, they say, ‘no, it’s not possible. He would’ve died.’”

Doctors had to break the shattering news to Alfie and Maisie that one in three who have the rare condition, called OTC deficiency, don’t survive the first week of life.

It was touch-and-go for an agonising day.

“They said, ‘We’ve got 24 hours to get the ammonia levels down,’” says Maisie, aged 25. “We were asked if we would ever switch his life support machine off. We did a christening with all of the family around.

“I was just hoping he would get through it. I was thinking, if I get upset now I’ll be spending my last few hours with him a total mess.”

Against all the odds, the little fighter pulled through. “Suddenly his ammonia

levels dropped quite quickly,” Maisie, a hospital receptionist, tells the News.

Doctors kept the machine on to hope for the best.

“By Sunday the machine was removed, the monitor was removed.

And by Tuesday he was looking around the room and smiling,” she adds.

Mum and dad were in intensive care with Tommy for about two weeks. “It seemed like a lifetime,” said Alfie.

Once out of the neonatal intensive care, talk turned to a liver transplant at King’s College Hospital, the only way to cure Tommy.

“We went to King’s when he was about three months old, and we said we wanted to do it,” says Alfie. “As we were talking, I asked if it was possible to do living donors, and they said yes. So I said, well I’ll do it then.”

It began a process of many months of tests for dad Alfie to check he was healthy enough to be a suitable donor for his son.

And in the meantime, the family even managed to get Tommy home for periods of a time. But in October his ammonia levels surged again - bringing him back to hospital, where he has stayed ever since.

In April, when all had seemed to be going well with Tommy, he became ill again - seriously so.

“His ammonia crept up again that month, and it became an emergency,” Alfie tells the News. “Tommy’s body was just getting tired of fighting.”

Surgeons at King’s rushed to get the transplant done, despite the coronavirus pandemic, to save the little boy’s life.

And in a strange twist, just fifteen minutes after Alfie was put to sleep for the op on April 28, it was discovered that a deceased person’s liver had become available.

“Talk about timing!” says Maisie. “But it was horrible. It was so scary having my partner and my son under the knife at the same time.”

Thankfully, the operation, which had been due to take place a month earlier, but was delayed over coronavirus, went smoothly.

And because Alfie went under the

knife for his son Tommy, that liver was instead given to a little boy with a metabolic condition from Great Ormond Street Hospital - saving two lives instead of one.

The modest father said: “There was no question of me not doing it. He’s my son at the end of the day. I would expect anyone to do the same for their kid.”

The family, who live in Bermondsey, are hoping to have Tommy home with mum and dad once-and-for-all this week.

But before they can, they had to celebrate Tommy’s first birthday on Wednesday, as the News went to press.

“We’ve got loads of balloons and toys for his cot,” says Maisie. “Hopefully Alfie can come up and see him.” The hospital currently has restrictions on visitors over the pandemic.

They are both full of praise for the nurses and surgeons at Evelina and King’s for saving their boy’s life.

“They all made such a big fuss over Tommy, and they made it so much easier for us as well,” says Alfie, a former plumber and semi-pro footballer.

It’s been a rollercoaster year for the childhood sweethearts and Tommy.

Maisie and Alfie, who have been an item for nearly a decade, were due to marry next month.

“We’d been due to get married in June,” says Maisie. “But after things went a bit south, we had to postpone it.

“But once Tommy’s home and settled we’ll definitely be rebooking a date.”

Herne Hill’s Cafe Provencal has shut down permanently after its managers said COVID-19 was the last straw in a series of challenges.

The business, founded in 1994, had already suffered the impact of Half Moon Lane’s serious flood in 2013 when a Thames Water pipe burst, leaving 58 traders with losses in excess

of £6.7 million. The business then suffered further flooding and a fire.

Payouts took years, and many traders never reopened. According to the Herne Hill Forum, footfall to the area has still not recovered.

The unit has now been cleared out, with co-owner Alan Gaunt tweeting that the restaurant and bar would not be re-opening at the end of lockdown.

“We are done. Two floods and fire and now this. No more energy.”

Two Sydenham homes hit by fire

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Two floors of a terraced house in Sydenham were completely destroyed by a fire last week.

Parts of the neighbours' roofs were also damaged by the blaze, which could be seen from across south-east London after breaking out on Thursday, May 14.

Twenty-two 999 calls were made by residents as the fire took hold in the Beaulieu Avenue property shortly after 1pm.

Three people had left the building before the brigade arrived. One of them, a woman, was treated at the scene by paramedics.

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters had it under control by 3pm.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by London Fire Brigade and the police.

The blaze came just days after a nearby block of flats was evacuated after a fire caused by a discarded cigarette.

The fire started on Saturday 9 in a bicycle store room at Bell Green, and then spread to the wall of the block.

Eighty people were evacuated as a precaution, two of whom were treated for smoke inhalation.

Investigators believe it started after someone failed to put out a cigarette properly.

Old Kent Road club loses licence over brawls

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Councillors stripped an Old Kent Road club of its licence last week - over a brawl in which police had to taser a man, who drunkenly attacked people with a brandy bottle.

Police had urged that the council revoke the licence for K-Che VIP Club, next door to McDonalds, after raising fears over the safety of their own officers and the public.

The club’s owner, Fernando Ramos, had pleaded with councillors to be allowed to implement what he called an ‘action plan’ to prevent another brawl.

However, he was unsuccessful.

The meeting heard how the club had been connected to a string of disorder incidents, several of which took place since the last time its licence was reviewed in December.

During the most serious of these, on February 29, a violent brawl erupted inside the club involving a man wielding a brandy bottle attempting to

hit people.

He advanced with the bottle towards coppers, who were forced to use a taser to stop him, the meeting heard.

Another officer was attacked and strangled on the dancefloor by a customer at the club before the fight spilled over into McDonald’s next door.

It took more than an hour to bring it under control.

“This is not an isolated incident,” said the Met’s PC Graham White. “This is not a one off. There were a considerable number of incidents last year, that was

their warning.”

An earlier incident in January saw a man assaulted, and one in November saw another man knocked unconscious with a bottle near the DJ booth.

“They should have taken it as a warning. They were only open eight weeks when they had two serious incidents to which police were called,” added PC White.

“In the police’s opinion, the licence should be revoked, to protect the public and to protect police officers from further injury.”

Fed-up residents also told the committee of the misery they had experienced due to the club’s operation, raising particular concerns about those in a nearby home for the vulnerable.

“Can you imagine being a vulnerable resident looking out your window and seeing an incident like the one we’ve just seen?” asked Pip Hayman, who lives nearby.

“The building near us is an elderly and vulnerable people’s home – and it’s not getting better, it’s getting worse,” added Luke Alder.

The club’s owner told councillors he accepted and apologised for the violent disorder, which happened on a promoter-led night.

“I do apologise for everything that happened on that night,” Mr Ramos said, who runs four other licensed venues.

“We’re a family-run business with over twenty years’ experience and we have always tried to do our very best across all of our venues, but the past six or seven months have not gone our way.”

Measures suggested by K-Che to continue trading included a ban on all promoter-led nights, barring under-21s from attending the club and decanting drinks into cups to prevent bottles being used as weapons.

“Clearly this was unacceptable,” added his solicitor, Phil Crier. “They are devastated it happened. It’s not the kind of venue they wish to run. But they wish to turn it around and intiatite measures as part of a comprehensive plan.”

However, councillors ultimately voted to revoke the club’s licence. The full reasoning was due to be sent to all parties within five working days of the decision.

Last week, the president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, Professor Russell Viner, said the number of cases across the country stood between ’75 and 100′, and said the evidence pointed to the syndrome being the body’s delayed overreaction to the virus.

news@southwarknews.co.uk An internal police investigation has been launched after officers carried out a search of car in the Elephant and Castle earlier this month.

Police are alleged to have broken a young black man’s phone and car door handle, threatened to use a taser on him and didn’t keep to social distancing rules, possibly infecting him with coronavirus, while searching his vehicle for drugs as he drove home from visiting his vulnerable father, with his brother and sister.

Fidel, a legal advisor and solicitor from Kent who declined to provide his last name, said he believes he was targeted because of his skin colour and added that the officer involved was “excessively forceful”.

Police told Fidel to pull over near Elephant & Castle in south London on the evening of May 2, telling him he was speeding. After a heated argument in which Fidel said he asked police to provide a reason for the search, he claims one of the officers drew a taser.

Fidel said the officer “failed to act in good faith and was unnecessarily aggressive from the offset.

“He was excessively forceful... there was clearly no immediate harm or threat of violence to him or any of the surrounding officers," he added. “He could not explain why he deployed a taser on me.”

The officer is then alleged to have damaged the car window and broke the door lock while forcing it open.

Fidel claims he also damaged the phone that he was using to film the incident.

Throughout the incident the officer allegedly failed to stick to social distancing rules, and Fidel says he has now developed coronavirus symptoms and is in selfisolation.

Police found no drugs in the car.

Fidel said: “This incident has caused us emotional trauma and distress and a complete loss of faith in the Met Police. Police are meant to be seen as public symbols of trust and safety, but me nor my family felt at all safe. We still do not actually know why we were stopped. We are a law-abiding family who were only travelling to see our poorly father...

“None of us were a threat in any way but were treated like criminals.”

The Independent Office for Police Conduct, which investigates complaints against the police, has said it is looking into the incident.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “The local borough Professional Standards team are aware of a complaint in relation to the search of a vehicle near to Elephant and Castle on Saturday, 2 May. The vehicle was stopped after it was spotted being driven erratically and a search of the car followed.

“Officers are continually reminded about the importance of social distancing while carrying out their duties. An investigation is currently ongoing into this matter.”

An IOPC spokesperson said: “At our request, the MPS has confirmed the incident will now be referred to the IOPC. Once received we will assess the information provided to determine whether an investigation is required and the level, if any, of our involvement.“

Canada Water is among busiest lockdown stations

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk TfL has urged commuters to avoid changing trains at Canada Water tube wherever possible, as it named the station one of the busiest during lockdown.

The organisation released a list of twenty stations which are the busiest during peak hours under

lockdown, to encourage commuters to seek routes where it is easier to socially distance.

The government advises that public transport should be avoided where possible and only used if strictly necessary.

For Canada Water, TfL recommends: “You are advised, where possible, to avoid using the station during the busiest times by taking the most direct route.”

This is because much of the station use comes from passengers switching between the Jubilee Line and Overground.

London Bridge tube station is also named by the authority as among the lockdown busiest, particularly at its entrance.

It is advising passengers to expect to queue to enter, “so that we can maintain the national 2m social distancing wherever possible.”

The 2m rule means the capacity of trains and tubes are constrained, which can lead to apparent busyness in stations, even when fewer passengers than ever are undertaking journeys on public transport.

Speaking on Monday, Southwark and Lambeth Assembly Member, Florence Eshalomi, said: “Going forward, we need stronger and clearer guidance from the Government to ensure employers also take responsibility and only ask their staff to commute in if absolutely necessary and safe to do so.”

The youngest victim of the disease in the country is believed to have been eight-monthold Alexander Parsons, who died in hospital in Plymouth.

As the News reported last week, Evelina Children’s Hospital recorded its first death from the illness, a fourteen-year-old who spent six days in intensive care.

More than 40 seriously ill children have been admitted to Evelina for treatment since March, with the majority responding well to treatment.

The illness has the hallmarks of the rare Kawasaki disease and toxic shock syndrome; with symptoms including fever, conjunctivitis, diarrhea, abdominal pain, rashes, headaches and vomiting.

Some have tested positive for COVID-19 but others have not. All were previously fit and well before becoming ill.

A hospital in Bergamo, Italy, was one of the first to notice a rise in cases - reporting a thirtyfold increase in children presenting with this type of inflammatory syndrome.

There are believed to have been under 300 cases in Europe but in New York, which has been badly hit by Coronavirus, 100 children have been diagnosed.

Researchers from hospitals across the UK say they have now established a link with COVID-19, saying the symptoms come on weeks after infection - meaning they could test negative for the virus but have successfully fended it off in the past.

RIDING SCHOOL WILL GET BACK IN THE SADDLE

No income and 18 horses to care for, but giving up isn’t an option

Like many small businesses, Dulwich Riding School is closed during the lockdown. With no income and eighteen horses to care for, it’s a huge challenge but for owner, Jaye Montebello, giving up is not an option.

“The yard’s been here since 1961 so the way I look at it is that if we can’t hold it together now it’s a poor show”, she says.

Financially, it’s a very worrying time but Jaye has always put a bit by each month for emergencies – something she learned from her grandfather who started the riding school. Now she feels she owes it to his legacy to get through the crisis.

“When I was a child the yard was always my refuge, somewhere to go if I broke up with a boyfriend, or [later] I wasn’t happy at work. Over the years it’s been that for so many people”, she says.

The riding school is a great place for young people of all backgrounds. The chance to bond with horses is healing and uplifting for those who’ve experienced difficulties, such as bullying at school or

It’s also a training centre for school leavers, offering two-year apprenticeship courses. For many young people, a career with horses starts at the yard.

With the future so uncertain, all of these youngsters will need the stables more than ever once lockdown ends.

In the meantime, Jaye is keeping riders and visitors in contact with daily events at the yard via photos, videos and news updates on social media.

She’s touched by how supportive and loyal her customers have been during the crisis, buying vouchers for future lessons, sending photos, and posting questions online about horses and stable management. “It’s those customers who

keep us going. I do hours of research – I really enjoy it”, she says.

Older people who grew up going to the yard are reliving memories and reconnecting with each other via old photos from her granddad’s collection posted online.

“It’s not just about the horses that are here now”, Jaye says. “A lot of people’s dreams started here”.

“There’s a generation from the 1960s who worked at the yard who are now all on Facebook commenting on pictures, talking to each other and sorting out their own photos to put up. It’s so nice to think some could be lonely pensioners and now they’re chatting away together,” she says.

The yard is closed to riders and visitors during the lockdown but the horses still need to be fed, watered and exercised.

The horses aren’t being ridden as it would be an unnecessary burden on the NHS if a rider fell off and needed medical treatment.

Owner, Jaye, is vulnerable and needs to stay at home where possible to protect her health but every aspect of the horses’ health and welfare is taken care of by her small team of dedicated staff and volunteers.

Around 100 volunteers offered to help at the yard when the coronavirus crisis started. Bowled over by such generosity, Jaye could only take five of them because she believed having fewer people on site would reduce everyone’s risk of catching the virus.

Jaye’s extremely proud of how her young team - all aged between eighteen and 23 - are handling the crisis.

“They’ve been so sensible. They’re still putting their lives at risk every day to come into work, doing a full day’s work in minimal hours so that we don’t have them on site so long”, she says.

Lockdown does have some advantages.

The horses have had a good rest and it’s a chance to catch up with jobs the staff don’t have time to do during a busy schedule.

For Jaye, it’s an opportunity to go through her Grandad’s remedies and notes on horse care – all on scraps of paper – with a view to publishing them in a book.

So what does the future hold for the riding school after lockdown? Jaye is optimistic about what the ‘new normal’ could look like for the yard. The crisis has made her realise that there are many ways she can bring in income without just offering lots of riding lessons.

She’s realised through social media that many people are interested in stable management and plans to set up online courses. For those who do want to ride, there will be more one-to-one and small group lessons to maintain social distancing.

There’s no doubt that horses make you feel good and lift the spirits. With so much stress and sadness around at the moment, it’s heart-warming to know that the yard is going strong thanks to the efforts of Jaye and her amazing team.

Private firms working for the public good in coronavirus outbreak People working for a wide range of private companies have been standing side-byside with public sector staff on the front line during the coronavirus outbreak.

Staff at private sector firms

have been doing their bit to help out communities across the country during the crisis.

This includes employees from many of the large outsourcing firms that the government works with,

who have both shifted their resources to work on other projects and made sure vital services have continued.

Ensuring the children of key workers are well fed CASE STUDY 2 FOOD FEEDING THE children of key workers who have still been attending school during the coronavirus crisis has been a significant challenge.

One of the firms that has been helping ensure children are well fed is ISS education, who work with more than 600 education establishments across the country.

They have been providing food hampers packed with all the ingredients families need to cook meals at home for their children Linda Cregan is the food services director for ISS education. She said around 200 of the schools it serves have stayed open to feed vulnerable and key worker children.

“We wanted to make sure we were doing everything possible and making it as easy as possible for schools to find solutions locally to what they needed,” she said. “We have had a mixed bag offering packed lunches, collections, and hot meals.”

One of the establishments they have worked with is the Waterton Academy Trust, which is based in Wakefield.

Linda said: “The trust wanted to be able to provide families with the ingredients that they could then cook the meals at home with for their children.”

Archbishop of Canterbury opens Garden to tommies staff Lambeth Palace’s ten acre garden - used

by England’s archbishops for around 800 years - is London’s second largest garden, with only Her Majesty the Queen boasting more green space.

Justin Welby and his wife Caroline have now given a key to the private garden to their neighbours at St Thomas’ so staff can take time out to enjoy its tranquil space.

Caroline said: “There is something magical for all of us who live at Lambeth Palace about knowing we are in central London with the traffic roaring past outside and yet being able to sit or walk in an oasis of calm and beauty just over the wall.

“The juxtaposition has been even more striking during lockdown as we have watched the garden come to life and enjoyed its peace and quiet, while knowing that over the road the staff at St Thomas’s Hospital have been working so hard and sacrificially on behalf of us all.

“It has been fitting, therefore, to offer them a key to our garden, which enables them on their breaks to come in, wander round and find peace here for themselves, at a suitable distance of course!”

Army drop off for elvis

The Nunhead Elvis - aka the lovely Aaron - handed over £350 he has collected so far for the Salvation Army while performing in the Buchan Road area on Thursday night.

Walworth’s Lockdown Bingo

Street entertainer and actor Mike Raffone is hosting a weekly ‘Lockdown Bingo’ for SE17 with John Whelan, from Southwark Playhouse’s People’s Company.

Described as the ‘perfect antidote to the stuck indoors blues’, ‘rip-roaring’ and ‘the maddest online bingo in show in town’, the weekly event is free to watch via Facebook live-stream...and includes prizes!

Players have even joined from as far afield as New Zealand.

On top of bingo, the People’s Company have

held a Cockney Knees Up, a Sing-a-long, and a local history quiz with the Walworth Society and have a cabaret show lined up for Saturday via Zoom.

Whelan says many events with the playhouse, including a special Mayflower anniversary project, have been postponed due to the pandemic, leaving actors and creatives keen to find new ways to support the community and provide a creative outlet during lockdown.

“People love the bingo and tell me it’s the highlight of their week,” he told the News.

“It’s a social event and we’ll carry on as long

as people need to shield at home.

“Working with Mike Raffone has been great, it’s a way for us at the People’s Company to continue being creative, and give something back to the community even when our events are cancelled or pushed back.

“We all need a giggle and science has shown that laughter helps relieve stress and tension and supports your immune system!”

£990 was raised throughout April and May to help support struggling families during the lockdown.

Friends of Goose Green School tweeted: “We are amazed and humbled at the wonderful response by the Goose Green community to our COVID-19 emergency home learning pack crowdfunding campaign.

Uzbek first for King’s staff

King’s staff enjoyed their first taste of food from Uzbekistan this month.

Southwark-based Street food trader Muzaffar Sadykov makes and sells the traditional rice dish plov - also known as pilau or pilaf - which can be served with slow cooked lamb or vegetables, with onion garlic

and herbs.

Last week he donated 25 portions to King’s and 25 Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals.

He and the team have also delivered 550 free portions to students studying at home across London.

Michael Peacock has been helping get medicines from Krystal Pharmacy to shielded residents in the area.

He told the News of his surprise when he took his old Raleigh, that he recently found abandoned, to the shop to have a new basket and the brakes checked on May 14.

As he whipped his debit card out the shop assistant told him it was on the house due to his important work.

“My jaw dropped. I just never expected such an unexpected act of selfless generosity,” he said.

The survey, entitled ‘Accessing the Internet’, states: “We would like to know what stops you and your family getting online. We want to understand why you might struggle to access the web.”

While definitely very important to increase access to online tools in the middle of the pandemic, one wonders how those struggling to access the internet will be reached by an online questionnaire.

It can’t be just us who wonders if this is the most sensible survey ever conducted?

Last week saw some new rules regarding the lockdown come into place. Whilst some restrictions have been eased slightly, it is absolutely crucial that we all continue to follow social distancing guidelines.

We are also now seeing more Londoners return to work. It is vital that employers step up and continue to allow their staff to work from home wherever possible. If this is not a viable option, then employers need to make sure their workplaces are safe environments to return to.

It is important to underline that if employees feel that they are being put at risk, they can complain to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) or refuse to work on the grounds of Section 44 employment rights.

Trade unions have continued to play

an indispensable role in improving conditions for workers through the COVID-19 outbreak, and I would strongly encourage signing up to one.

The government also need to issue clearer and perhaps stricter guidance around this issue.

Concerns are rightly being raised about the impending pressures on our transport services, which will need to run at a reduced capacity to facilitate social distancing.

Southwark is host to some of the busiest roads, train and tube stations. This is why I am urging local people to rethink how they get around the capital, wherever possible, as we start to recover from the first wave of this pandemic.

To make this easier, the Mayor and TfL have introduced a new London Streetspace programme, which will transform town centres, create additional segregated cycle lanes and expand pavements for pedestrians.

Elsewhere, the Self-Employed Income Support Scheme (SEISS) has now become available for freelancers and contractors, who can apply up to 80 per cent of lost earnings, through HMRC. The government also announced that the job retention scheme will be extended to October.

This will provide a lifeline to many households in the borough, but sadly too many, such as those with No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF), are still falling through the gaps in the government’s schemes.

Finally, I would like to thank all of our key and essential workers, who continue to put themselves at risk day-in, day-out. Beyond our weekly applause, we must also stand up for their right to adequate PPE and better conditions at work.

What the Dickens? activist, Piers Corbyn, is in the headlines once again.

First, we revealed how he led an anti lockdown protest in Glastonbury.

Then it was followed up by another one outside St Thomas’.

Last week, the brother of the former Labour leader scored a hat-trick by getting involved in yet another demo in Hyde Park.

It has seen the controversial weather forecaster slapped with fines, as well as backlash from some in Southwark.

But perhaps the best reaction comes from within the Corbyn family itself.

“Can I just say; Piers Corbyn speaks for Piers Corbyn and only Piers Corbyn,” says his nephew, Tommy.

Anyone who has sat through an excruciating dinner with the extended family may well be inclined to agree that “every family has a Piers, I’m sure.”

Schools reopening risks more harm than good

N

o one can deny that the best place for young children is to be at school.

Nothing can compete with being in a real classroom, with their friends and teachers, and having access to all the equipment, technology, and space they need to learn academically and in other no less important ways.

There is a real risk during this pandemic that a whole generation could be left behind at critical stages in their personal and social development.

But the June 1 date could risk more harm than good. For one thing, it’s a blanket measure that doesn’t take into account the regional differences and unique make-up of a school community.

Returning to school in a remote, rural setting with few COVID-19 cases and minimal public transport use is one thing.

Asking schools in the most built up, overcrowded areas of Southwark and other parts of inner London, with a high proportion of BAME children, parents and staff is quite another. These are groups disproportionately affected by COVID-19.

If they are to return to the classroom, they need to feel safe.

It’s all well and good saying measures will be put in place, and the government will respond to the situation and reverse any decisions based on new infections and the R rate, but right now we are the worst affected country in Europe.

The situation in care homes is catastrophic. And transport workers and health professionals are also dying. At least one transport worker has died after being spat on by a passenger. Children will inevitably break the social distancing rules. So far, PPE is not being guaranteed and the track and trace app is in its infancy.

It’s a lot of work to make a plan that will only be in place until the summer holidays start in July.

Perhaps teachers’ time would be better spent working on plans to support children throughout the holidays.

And the government’s funding better spent avoiding holiday hunger and putting systems in place to tide parents over until September.

Rushing back for a few weeks, when we are possiby coming out of the worst of this crisis, could cost us all far too much.

‘to reopen schools is reckless’

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk An eighteen-storey tower could be built next to the Rotherhithe roundabout if a developer’s bid is successful.

The £80m scheme would see the tower constructed near to the entrance of the Rotherhithe Tunnel on St Olav’s Court.

The developer, Southern Grove, announced this week it had exchanged contracts for the purchase of the land, and that it intended to submit a planning application to the council.

Nicknamed ‘The Brooklyn’, the mixed-use tower would include 150

homes and 25,000sq ft of office space.

“The Brooklyn is a fantastic addition to this site and will provide a healthy boost to housing and commercial stock in Canada Water, which is one of the capital’s regeneration hotbeds,” said Southern Grove’s chief exec, Tom Slingsby.

“Canada Water is going to be put on the map in a bold new way by the extensive regeneration that is going to take hold over the next 15 years and our own scheme will complement that effort.”

He said that Southern Grove would be looking for a housing association partner to provide ‘affordable’ homes.

Top public schools including Eton, Harrow and Westminster will not resume this term, but the government wants state schools to open where possible to limited year groups - including year one and six to stop disadvantaged children from being permanently left behind.

A clutch of councils including Bury, Wirral, Hartlepool and Calverdale, all in areas of the north where COVID-19 infections remain high, have all advised their schools to stay closed for now and criticised the government’s decisionmaking.

When asked whether returning to class on June 1 in Southwark was safe, council leader Peter John told the News: “What I know is that in order for schools to reopen, they needed three weeks’ notice.

“Is it safe? I don't know. It's for each individual school to determine.

“We're helping schools undertake pretty rigorous risk assessments with the year groups suggested by the government.

“My view is that we should look to see how we can help schools with safety, whether on June 1 or in later weeks.”

He added: ”It's not in local councils’

hands. It's for the schools to make that decision or the government.

“Parents will also make a decision on whether to take their kids back and we will support them in whatever decision they make.”

He also says decisions on how to handle parents who refuse - including whether fines would be given - are not currently on the cards.

“I don't think we can take any of those decisions until September.

“We can't enforce parents taking children back to school and I don't think we'd want to at the moment,” adding, “The last thing this needs to be is confrontational.

“It needs to be a supportive process across the board.

“Most parents will want to take their kids back to school. I'm saddened it's become confrontational as an issue.”

By mid-May around 815 pupils were attending schools in Southwark. The majority (88 per cent) were in primaries, with 10 per cent in secondaries. Most have keyworker parents. The News understands parents, staff and council officers are setting up ‘schools recovery groups’ to help plan the next steps.

But after reports the ‘R’ rate has risen again, ongoing PPE supply problems, and the death toll now passing 40,000 according to Tuesday’s Office for National Statistics figures, concerts are growing that reopening schools too hastily could lead to a second spike.

councillor James McAsh, who is also a primary school teacher in Brixton, tweeted: “Is it true that children are less likely to die from the virus? Statistically, yes it is.

“But the first child to die from coronavirus lived a few minutes from my school. So forgive me if I don’t find that argument too reassuring.”

He joined the largest mass conference call in trade union history on Monday, with 16,000 National Education Union members discussing the government’s plans. He says a union meeting at his school unanimously agreed to reject the June 1 start date.

Southwark’s UNISON’s branch is also appealing for the borough’s schools to stay closed after June 1, describing it as a ‘reckless move by the government’.

In a statement sent to the News, branch secretary April Ashley called on the council to defy the government: “Southwark currently has one of the highest proportion of Covid-19 cases in London and black workers are more than twice as likely to contract, and die of the virus.

“Reopening schools and nurseries will place the black community, and the children of key workers at great risk by allowing the virus to re-enter circulation.

Everyone is worried about a second spike.”

Members say private nurseries have also largely been ignored in the public debate, arguing they will be forced to weigh up financial viability against safety measures without extra financial support.

A coalition of unions are calling for local authorities to be given the autonomy to close schools where testing indicates clusters of new Covid-19 cases, and for no increase in pupil numbers until the nationwide rollout of the track and trace app, along with other key demands on PPE and safety.

Meanwhile a survey by NASUWT, the teachers' union found that only five per cent of 29,000 teachers think it is safe to reopen in June.

A government move to relax the hours construction firms are allowed to operate to 9pm has been slammed by a Southwark councillor.

Last week, housing secretary Robert Jenrick ordered local authorities to permit requests for extended working hours on sites until 9pm during the coronavirus pandemic.

He advised councils that working until 9pm should be allowed Monday to Saturday, and even 24-hour working in some areas without residential properties.

“Local authorities should not refuse requests to extend working hours until 9pm, Monday to Saturday without very compelling reasons for rejection,” said Mr

Jenrick.

“Applications should only be refused where there are very compelling reasons such as significant impact on neighbouring businesses or uses which are particularly sensitive to noise, dust or vibration, which cannot be overcome through other mitigation, or where impacts on densely populated areas would be unreasonable.”

The decision was criticised by Borough and Bankside councillor, Adele Morris, who had started a petition against construction firms being allowed to work late hours during lockdown.

“Furious that Robert Jenrick has now agreed that construction work can carry on until 9pm Mon - Sat,” said the Liberal Democrat councillor.

“He clearly doesn't know what it's like to be in lockdown in a small flat, trying to work/teach children or just relax with a major building site continuing to operate next door.”

A petition started by the SE1 rep had previously urged the government not to take such a move for fear of negatively

impacting residents who are stuck indoors.

“In populated areas, where residents are currently confined for long periods in small flats with no gardens, the noise from the construction sites that have continued to work during the lock-down is already impacting on people’s mental health,” states the petition.

It comes as Grosvenor, the developer behind a major regeneration of Bermondsey’s Biscuit Factory, revealed it would be beginning construction soon on its project.

“Work will start soon on the building of over 1,500 rental homes and a secondary school, which will improve the fabric of this part of the city, delivering muchneeded rental housing and creating a new investment for long-term hold,” said the developer’s chief exec, Mark Preston.

Grosvenor - owned by the Duke of Westminster - had been originally been rejected by Southwark for its plans at the site, but was eventually given approval by City Hall.

Southwark Council had committed to repairing the building and opening it up to community use after heated meetings in the aftermath of a series murders around the estate, including that of seventeen-year-old Rhyhiem Barton in 2018.

Work was expected to start in early 2019 but was pushed back to October. Brandon 1 TRA chair Tom Lloyd says Southwark Council 'finished' the project in February, to the tune of £180,000 but water has since been leaking from the ceiling and the project was mothballed due to COVID-19.

CAMBERWELL CONSOLIDATED CHARITIES

Throughout the lockdown the hall could have been another valuable resource for volunteers to store and deliver food and other parcels while socially distancing, but instead remains completely closed.

“I am beginning to wonder if there was ever any real intention to repair the building?” Mr Lloyd asked the News, claiming that the pipes were not properly looked at during the work - despite being the biggest ongoing challenge with the estate."

The major project is one of several contentious issues including CCTV, tree pruning and communal lights repairs residents have told the News had not been completed on time, leaving residents vulnerable to a small minority engaging in criminal activity.

The trust between residents and the council had taken a further battering after a draft consultation document, outlining options including demolish the building and replacing with new homes or ‘keeping all options open’, were accidentally left lying around on the estate in October 2019 - leading to fears the site would be sold off to developers.

The council's director of communities, Stephen Douglass, told a packed meeting the same month that these were ‘not even a final draft’ and “should never have been seen”, apologising for the shock and confusion the plans caused.

This came three months before Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group’s - now reversed decision to close the estate’s only GP surgery were announced.

The council's public safety cabinet member, Evelyn Akoto, has been working closely with all three TRA chairs on the estate but the future of the Jack Hobbs remains one of the community's biggest sticking points.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Mr Lloyd is baffled at how the much needed club can still be in such poor condition given the investment ploughed into the refurb - see video online at southwarknews.co.uk, shot at the end of April.

Councillor Akoto told the News this week that picking up the refurb when safe to do was a ‘matter of urgency’.

“I want to reassure residents that we are very keen to press ahead with the plans for the Jack Hobbs club as soon as possible,” she said.

“The issues log is for precisely this, to pick up on anything that isn’t going to plan, but it had to be paused while the council responded to the virus outbreak, and the lockdown.

“It goes without saying that COVID-19 has meant some significant stalling of projects that we, as much as residents, really want to get back on track.

We will be picking this up as a matter of urgency, and I thank residents for their patience while we take the next steps forward.”

The Art of Dance Brought to Life in Rotherhithe

Natalie Webb is an ‘ambidextrous painter and film maker’ who was once a ‘de-sign and production manager in the fashion industry who wanted a change from the great amount of travelling that career entails… so it seemed natural to move towards art as a new career,’

writes Michael Holland...

And the new career means that Natalie amazingly uses two hands working together to paint people.

“I’m inspired by the spontaneity of movement and love to paint people in action,” she begins while using both hands to emphasise her words, like a friendly Edward Scissorhands. “With my art practice I often paint live, and also run art workshops - I love the social interaction in these activities!”

The last interaction Natalie had through her art was with dancer Helen

Cox until, she says, “We had only one studio session before social distance rules were en-forced…We were due to make a film as part of this project.”

Alas, the arrival of Covid-19 also interrupted other plans: “I had a solo show and a few art fairs and exhibitions lined up.”

Natalie, a member of the Bermondsey Artists’ Group, has a studio in the former Rotherhithe Police Station, but is currently home-schooling along with her hus-band, which means that the big artworks she worked on have to now be down-sized to fit her housebound situation: “I have set up a temporary studio at home so I can work late into the night if needed, but can only paint smaller pieces, but that's fine,” she says, coming to terms with her lockdown life, before adding, “I do really miss my studio, though…

But it won't be forever.”

And the art carries on regardless. “I am working on some pieces inspired from the last dancer I worked with Ama Rouge - and some paint sketches I made of Helen Cox, plus, I wrote and directed a short film in October so I have been working with the editor to get that finished.”

How different do you think your life will be once we get back to normal?

“I think it will take a while for society to go back to normal, but I will adjust my art practice to fit in with whatever that will be… I continue to sell existing pieces through my website and participate in ongoing projects that can continue online while we are in lockdown.”

Borough Market to Broke Artist Creates Sunshine and a Rainy Day From Recycled Materials Richard Stott from Camberwell (‘The Peckham side and I adore it’) is a stand-up comedian and one more performer who has had to cancel a UK tour due to COVID-19, writes Michael Holland...

On the plus side in these downside times, we will all have a chance to see Richard in action when the virtual gigs he has been getting involved with come to fruition.

He says of his work, “My material uses a disability I have as a jumping off point to talk about all sorts of social commentary.”

How has Covid-19 impacted on your profession?

‘Hugely. My industry effectively no longer exists as we rely on performing at mass gatherings. Personally, I have had to sadly postpone my U.K tour, which is a big financial sledgehammer… I was also planning to take an hour long show to the Edinburgh Fringe this year… Who knows how that will happen?’

Do you have other means of earning money to live on?

‘No. I had a job at Borough Market, which I adored, but dedicated myself fully to my tour and the creation of my new show.’

What do you plan to do to get through this crisis?

‘Sit tight and try and keep away from stress… Try and enjoy it. What other option do we have? Some really creative ways of putting out online content have been put together: Virtual gigs, people creating their own comedy channels; I’m already getting involved in this to keep my mind occupied professionally.’

How different do you think your life will be once we get back to normal?

‘I’m hoping that the comedy industry will bounce back big, as there will be thousands of people looking to go out again and indulge in some catharsis about what we’ve all just been through. There are some fantastic jokes and observations being put out already and I really believe comedy can play a big part in celebrating us being together again.’

Anything you’d like to add?

‘Be nice to each other, don’t point blame at anyone and when we’re free come and see my shows as I’ll be broke.’

Bermondsey Artists’ Group member Sophie Horton creates ‘interventions, sculptures, textiles and drawings to exhibit in the public realm’, any of which could be a watercolour of cranes at the Elephant & Castle, where she lives, or magical artworks created from such diverse materials as recycled wool, ribbon, acrylic or metal; art forms that she may have honed up when studying sculpture (B.A. Hons) and Fine Art (M.A.) at the prestigious Goldsmiths University, writes Michael Holland...

She explains the attraction of what she does: “What I love most about my work is the excitement of a new sitespecific commission that allows me to experiment with diverse materials, presenting ideas through drawing and discussion… And working in the public domain means I meet people from different communities from different professions, and that’s inspiring.”

Sophie’s parents were supportive of her course (and career) choice - in a fashion: “They wanted me to either be a painter, doctor or social worker, and were dismayed that I wanted to study sculpture, which they saw as objects that got in the way of looking at paintings!”

Early inspirations for the budding artist were “Constantin Brancusi and Eva Hesse and Arte Povera, whose artists explored unfamiliar nontraditional sculpture materials,” and already her work has allowed her to exhibit all over the UK, plus, residencies in Australia and the USA. Sophie says she was invited to join the Bermondsey Artists Group following ‘“Even Concrete Has Feelings” 1994.

“This was a site-specific installation of a windowless, concrete, cell-like structure inspired by reports of the

Lions Chairman wanted manager nearly a decade ago

sport@southwarknews.co.uk Millwall Chairman John Berylson has revealed he would have liked to sign current manager Gary Rowett eight or nine years ago, and ‘wasn’t going to lose him twice’.

In a question and answer session with fans on the club website, Berylson spoke of his love for Millwall, and said that all his family in the US were now Lions fans, and only wore Millwall club shirts. He relived his first impressions of the club, from the end of 2006, seeing it as ‘a ship that was drifting’, with unstable finances and leadership, with players not knowing who the manager would be from one week to the next.

Within a day or two of taking over Berylson was hit with an unpaid tax bill, and then had to reckon

with paying players’ wages, in what was a baptism of fire for the American businessman. Looking back, he now feels there have been improvements year on year, accepting there have also been unavoidable setbacks along the way.

On management, he feels the club have been ‘very fortunate’, with Kenny Jackett as a longterm boss, and Neil Harris in the hotseat for almost five years. ‘I’m not saying that every choice was brilliant, but I think we made some very good choices’ he maintains. And on current boss Rowett he admits: “Quite honestly I would have liked to have hired eight or nine years ago if I had the opportunity, so I wasn’t going to lose him twice.’

He also defended controversial former manager Ian Holloway, nothing that he ‘kept us up in the first year’, before things ‘went awry’ in the following season.

In a wide-ranging session, the Chairman said it was hard to pick a best moment, but recalled the Wembley games with fondness, win or lose, as well as the 85th minute against Bradford, Neil Harris’ hat-trick to come back from 2-0 down to Hartlepool and snatching a 4-4 draw against Charlton nearly a decade ago. And he also praised fans for uniting to prevent a compulsory purchase of the club’s land, noting that the team at Lewisham Council were now working with the club on regeneration plans, rather than against.

‘We’re going to be fine’ he added, saying he was healthy and well, in spite of seeing some close friends pass away during the coronavirus pandemic. The COVID-19 crisis may have brought the 2019/20 season to a temporary halt but work has continued behind-the-scenes at Millwall – most notably with the Community Trust.

The outbreak of the virus and the country’s subsequent lockdown has presented all of society and the economy with unprecedented challenges and it has been particularly damaging to the charity sector.

Community Trust staff have had to adapt accordingly and moved quickly to switch as much of their regular offering online as possible, which included their Alternative Provision Academy and BTEC programme for Post-16 Football Academy students. That change allows participants to continue to engage with the Trust and maintain their learning pathway regardless of the lockdown. Individuals can also sign up to different e-courses with a donation made to the NHS for each one completed.

But the focus and work of staff in the Lions Centre has not been limited to their usual attendees. Instead, Community Trust personnel have gone above and beyond

revenue stream for the club from regeneration - ‘that income’s going to the club’ he vowed, to lower the risk and help build stronger teams.

For now, he wants to ‘get on with it’ once allowed to train and hopefully to play from June, even if behind closed doors. He believes

the current side is one of the strongest he’s seen, and feels it’s imperative the last nine games of the season are played - ‘we should be competing in every game’.

Call centres have also been set-up for their walking sports participants and those on their DS Active and Disability programmes, while the Trust has also coordinated Lewisham Council’s befriending helplines.

As well, they were able to deliver Easter Sports Camps at Conisborough College for the children of key workers and have put together informative podcasts, released physical activity sessions online, shared cookery recipes and hosted FIFA tournaments – amongst other unique schemes and initiatives.

“It has undoubtedly been a very testing time,” Sean Daly, Trust chief executive, said.

“But while there has been enforced changes to how we work and increased financial issues, the crisis has also presented the Trust with opportunities to further its experiences and those of staff and volunteers.

“I cannot praise staff enough for the

way in which they have embraced the challenges COVID-19 has presented society and I’m so proud of those who have volunteered to help local residents most in need. I really hope that work has been a source of some comfort at a very difficult time for so many.

“We don’t know how long this will all go on for but we will continue to do absolutely everything we can, not just for our programme participants but also for the entire community.”
