katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Just thirteen out of 57 people from Camberwell and Peckham stranded abroad due to cancelled flights and lockdowns have been repatriated to the UK.

Their MP, Harriet Harman, says many have found it difficult to contact British consular officials and, when they do, are often simply told to ‘contact their airline’, despite the fact flights have been scrapped or are only available at exorbitant prices.

Two stuck in New Zealand were quoted costs in excess of £5,000 to get home.

Another constituent affected is a 51-yearold woman with breast cancer unable to fly back from India.

Harman has also been contacted by families with young children, and by worried parents on behalf of their children. One mother requested Harman’s help after her 22-year-old daughter was stranded on an island in Thailand.

Among those who have successfully returned include a social worker and doctor, both of whom have now flown back from New Zealand.

The fund is giving grants of £2,000, £5,000 or £10,000 to businesses who aren’t covered by the national small business grant; retail, leisure and hospitality grant, or self-employment income support.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for jobs, business and innovation, said: “We are making every effort to support our fantastic local businesses but the fact remains that many are still likely to fall through the cracks in terms of financial support, and we want to make sure they are able to carry on now and beyond this crisis.

“Many of them don’t have the safety net of the businesses which the Government is offering financial support to, including many of Southwark’s smallest, locally run businesses. “I would ask the government to recognise this, and make the investment in them via councils, so we can get the help to where it’s needed. I wish all of our local traders the very best, and I want them to know we’re thinking of them too.”

Launched last month and has helped feed poorest families in the borough

This Thursday the BBC are hosting The Big Night In, but it’s not the first of its kind since the country went into coronavirus lockdown – last month two Walworth legends hosted their first night in, or should that be Knight?

For the idea of creating a night in of entertainment was the brainchild of Barrie Knight, a self-confessed Walworth Roader and bodyguard to the stars.

Alongside fellow Walworth Roader and DJ Danny Waters, the two are wellknown for their annual club night at the Elephant & Castle’s Coronet, which has seen thousands return to the area to relive the heady days of disco, since it was first launched in July 2014.

On Saturday March 28, the pair hosted a live youtube club night with local DJs and stars including Ronan Keating and Keith Duffy.

They drew in an audience of 4,000 and on their second night Saturday April 11, it rocketed to 13,000 as word spread across the globe. “The Big Knight Out team wondered what we could do to spread a little happiness, so we decided to bring The Big Knight Out indoors,” Barrie told the News.

The club night, which originally started as a celebration of Barrie’s 50 birthday, aims to relive for that generation the finest retro soul, funk and disco of their youth. “It was back in the day when us Walworth Roaders went for nights out at the Lyceum in the west end or along the Old Kent Road in venues like the Dun Cow, which is now a doctor’s surgery.

And we got such a positive feedback that we did it annually – people that used to live in Walworth, Bermondsey, Peckham came back from their homes across the globe. And the same is happening with The Big Knight In, suddenly we found people in lockdown in India and Los Angeles tuning in.”

But its not all about dancing the night away - nearly £6,000 has been donated to help Barrie and the team feed the poorest families living first in Walworth and then into parts of Bermondsey and Peckham.

“It’s not a foodbank,” Barrie explained,

“It’s about us knowing as a community those in need and giving it to them. It started as I talked to the caretaker of a local primary here in Walworth. I asked him how it was going and he said some of the parents, many of them key workers, were asking for food.

“I know what it was like to live on school dinners, so many of us growing up in Walworth did. And during the six weeks’ holiday we often relied on our neighbours to help us out. I want to recreate that sense of community now. I just asked during the club night for some money, I said give us 50p and I can get them a can of beans.”

Since then the former club promoter has recruited loads of people locally to lend a helping hand and has got the backing of Morrison’s on the Walworth Road. “They are giving me pallets of stuff.

On fork-lifts and on to trucks and we are then bagging it up and giving it out. Last week I paid them £1,000 in cash and they gave me 50 per cent off and then a thousand pound more on top of that.

Joanie O’Connor has lived on Swan

Estate for 65 years, and as a child of the Blitz, remembers bombs obliterating swathes of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe.

She began her weekly songs with Dame Vera Lynne’s classic ‘We’ll Meet Again’, inspired by her mother’s own singing to mask the sound of bombs exploding near shelters more than

seven decades ago.

And like her mother - a cleaner at Guy’s Hospital - the pensioner is singing to keep up her community’s spirits in a crisis.

“When we first went out there and clapped, I just thought I’m going to sing a song,” she told the News.

“So ‘We’ll Meet Again’, I sung them that. It just makes people forget things for a while. I’m doing it because I like it, but they all dance, they sway. Not all of them know the words though “Some people just come out and then in again, but I thought, no, we’ll make a party of it.”

The 87-year-old sings three old classics every week across the balconies to others watching on their doorsteps or from a distance in the block’s main square.

This week she is planning on singing one of her favourites - My Yiddishe Momma, a tale of nostalgia for the ‘old world.’

Neighbours have also asked if she can sing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, inspired

The actress, best known for playing Tracy Barlow in the long-running soap, has urged the two kind-hearted strangers who helped her friend’s husband after his collapse to get in touch.

The man had taken ill while walking in Alleyn Road on Monday April 6 at around 7.30pm. Two Good Samaritans provided life-saving resuscitation on

him and waited for an ambulance to arrive.

“Two very brave and selfless men phoned an ambulance and performed CPR and waited with the children until [the] ambulance arrived,” said Ms Ford.

“He is recovering now in intensive care. My friend is trying to find the two men and thank them as without a shadow of a doubt they saved his life.

“She also would like to reassure them that her husband had no Covid

19 symptoms and tested negative at the hospital.”

The British Heart Foundation has also responded to the appeal adding: “We’re so sorry to hear that a friend of yours suffered a cardiac arrest, but we’re pleased that he is recovering.”

Lizzy signed up to frontline at King’s

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A thirty-year-old from Peckham is one of thousands across the country to sign up as NHS volunteers.

Lizzie Knight is a former healthcare assistant who decided to go back to frontline work during the crisis.

She said: “With such huge pressure on NHS staff, I wanted to volunteer and do my bit to support them during this difficult time.

“Anything I can do, however small, is the least that I can do to help.

“I am volunteering in the welcome and pathfinder role, welcoming people to the hospital, encouraging them to wash their hands, and giving them directions and a smile.

“I’m also helping in the wellbeing hubs and packing patient and staff care packs. As well as other volunteers, I'm working alongside NHS staff who usually work in IT, day clinics, HR - the list goes on - who are focusing their energy and enthusiasm on doing whatever is needed to help.

“I’ve been really welcomed by everyone at the hospital, and it feels like a privilege to be here. It's been amazing to meet so many different people working in various areas of the NHS, who have come together to make sure patients can have the very best care.”

by Coronation Street actress Kate Ford to find two men who selflessly saved her friend’s life as he collapsed from a heart attack in Dulwich.

Joanie remembers the first day of the Blitz when she was eight-years-old, she tells the News over the phone.

“We had all the air wardens come around shouting, ‘this one’s for real, get down the shelter’. I looked up and there was hundreds of planes,” she says.

“Down the shelter, my mum was singing to cheer people up. You could hear the bombs but everybody was singing.

“And years ago, ladies used to have big perms with wires in their hair, and I was helping them get them out of their hair.”

When the bombs stopped and the all-clear was sounded, the family discovered their house had been hit.

“Our house was gone, everything was gone,” she recalls. “We had to go to my nan’s and we went across the tunnel, there were people lying on the ground.

“It was a terrible war, but everybody helped everybody.”

The coronavirus crisis has some similarities with World War Two. “In the war, you could hear the bombs and doodlebugs coming, you would watch them to see where they went,” she says.

“It was life-and-death, and now it’s the same. You know, you count yourself lucky you can live through it.”

But Joanie, a former supervisor at Southwark Crown Court, has one piece of advice: keep yourself busy.

She plays cards, reads, and listens to music to pass the time while under lockdown. “You’ve just got to think, ‘What will be, will be,’” Joanie tells News readers.

“Some people are thinking about it all the time, but I think turn it off, you’ve just got to do what you’ve got to do.

“After a few days you’ll feel better.

You have got to keep yourself occupied, otherwise you will go off your rocker.”

Husband and wife David and Elizabeth Newlands spent all week on the creation, now proudly displayed in their Muscatel Place front garden.

David told the News: "Five years ago I had a heart attack and the service from Kings college Hospital saved my life."

His partner is a keyworker too - as a teaching assistant she is still going into schools open for frontline workers' children.

Across Southwark people are putting up messages of appreciation for frontline workers.

Just six tests a day £35,000 raised for laptops at one Bermondsey school

Compass School on Drummond Road established the fundraiser three weeks ago to purchase laptops and other essential

items for students having to work from home.

At the time of writing more than £35,000 has been donated by generous members of the community - meaning the school has now netted 120 chromebooks to give to pupils to support home learning.

At the time of writing, Yaa Asantawa, a Caribbean food shop, Nisa Local, and the Design Print shop had signed up for the scheme.

Pyramid Pharmacy and 5 Star Dry Cleaners were also partaking in the deliveries. Separately, Bell and Son’s butchers is also offering home delivery.

“In response to the COVID-19 crisis, to help make everyone’s lives a little more comfortable and a little bit safer, we are looking at every way to

support local shops and businesses to serve their customers, especially the vulnerable and elderly with a local delivery service,” said the Blue Bermondsey BID, which has organised the scheme.

To get the free deliveries, customers have to contact the business by phone and place an order with contact number and delivery address.

After arranging payment, the delivery will be dropped off to your home by Pedivan Deliveries.

“What’s more, it is free,” added the Blue Bermondsey BID. “All you have to do is contact a participating business and give it a try. You will be amazed at how easy it is.”

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Only six tests a day were available to Southwark health and social care workers last week, according to correspondence sent to them - despite Government pledges to massively ramp up testing.

An email sent to care workers in Southwark on Wednesday April 15 stated that the borough was able to offer six key workers tests, but that they would have to go to the 02 in Greenwich for it.

In addition, these tests could only be carried out between 4pm and 4.30pm.

“Southwark are currently able to offer COVID-19 testing slots for a total of 6 key workers from across health and social care,” it states.

“This is likely to increase over the coming weeks. Testing can be undertaken for staff or members of their same household who are self-isolating

“Now I can do all my work at the right time. A massive thank you to all those who have donated,” he said.

This week, education secretary Gavin Williamson announced a scheme where some disadvantaged fifteen-year-olds would be able to borrow a laptop if they don’t already have access to one.

Those who don’t have access to the internet may also be able to get a 4G router, Mr Williamson said.

The Principal of Compass School, Marcus Huntley, said he was blown away by the donations and that it would help the school go even further than the government’s promised support.

“Whether it’s Grosvenor Estates, City livery companies like the Curriers and Pewterers, Shad Thames Residents’ Association or donations from individuals, they have all contributed to raising over £35,000 for our pupils.”

“Thanks to their generosity, we can go well beyond the DfE’s laptop initiative, by supporting disadvantaged pupils across all year groups during this period and beyond.

The school aims for students to be able to keep their laptops, “as long as they continue to work hard at school.”

The email was shared by Jane Townson, CEO of the UK Homecare Providers Association, a professional body for home care providers.

“Testing careworkers for COVID19, this is the current reality, doesn’t scratch the surface,” said Dr Townson. “[I’m] not sure how many careworkers own cars either, especially in cities.

“Need more labs testing and a more practical way of administering.”

MP Harriet Harman has also criticised the government record on tests, calling the six tests a day “woeful.”

She called on the government to “sort it now,” adding that Southwark had among the highest infection rates in the country.

“NHS, careworkers, police (being

deliberately coughed on!) and other essential service workers [are] putting themselves on the line for us,” said Ms Harman, the MP for Camberwell and Peckham, on social media.

The government has been much criticised over testing levels during the response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Health Secretary has issued a target of testing 100,000 people a day by the end of the month.

But at the time of writing, only over 20,000 people were being tested daily - leaving just over a week to quadruple tests.

As the News went to press, Downing Street’s spokesperson had told the media that the government was still sticking hard to the target and that the authorities were doing everything they could to meet it.

The Department for Health was contacted for comment but did not respond at the time of going to press.

Professor Rose added that the tech also helped alleviate the stress of critical care nurses looking after the seriously ill patients.

“Together, we’re able to help keep families connected when they cannot be near, which may help to dramatically reduce family and patient distress and could revolutionise the way we communicate with families in the future,” she said.

Initial seed funding of £1 million has been provided to kick-start the project with 4G enabled tablets.

Fundraising will continue in the coming weeks until a goal of two tablets per every ICU ward has been reached.

Families can now be at loved one’s bedside in ICU - virtually josh@southwarknews.co.uk Families whose loved ones are in intensive care for coronavirus can now be virtually present at their bedside thanks to a joint project between Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s.

Life Lines allows relatives to see and speak to their loved ones using a tablet on a secure platform, as well as meet clinicians to ask them questions about the care.

Due to the pandemic, physical visiting in hospitals is extremely limited - so the project aims to allow people an opportunity to say their final goodbyes to loved ones.

As part of the projects, two ICU tablets will be provided to intensive care units across the UK, supported by a fundraising drive.

It is the brainchild of a team involving Professor Louise Rose, a professor of critical care at King’s, and Dr Joel Meyer, a critical care consultant at Guy’s and St Thomas’.

Canada Water developer gives rent holiday to its businesses

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The developer behind a massive regeneration project in Canada Water has pledged a rent holiday for small businesses using its space.

British Land, which is behind an approved 54-acre plan to overhaul much of Canada Water, said that those businesses would not have to pay rent from April to June.

The developer has also pledged £20,000 to the Southwark Community Response Fund in reaction to the coronavirus.

“At British Land, we recognise the very material impact that Covid-19 is having on the communities at our places and we are committed to supporting them through this challenging time.

“In addition to contributing to the emergency response fund we are working with our network of local partners to identify how we can most effectively support them and the projects they run locally at this time.”

Grants from the fund are available of up to £10,000 for direct coronavirus response, with larger grants of between £10,000 and £50,000 to allow organisations to change the way they work to continue meeting the needs of the community.

In the last round of grants, £44,000 was given from the fund to charities, social enterprises and TRAs to help them deal with coronavirus emergencies.

bogus callers steal from 83-yr-old

They nab her handbag with late hubby’s picture

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A pair of sick con artists stole from an 83-year-old Bermondsey woman in her own home by pretending to be council plumbers this week – to take just £40 from her purse.

The disabled pensioner has lived on her own in Keeton’s Estate following the death of her husband five years ago. The handbag had a precious picture of her late husband inside, alongside money, her bus pass and her house keys.

Speaking to the News, the family said they need the community’s help to find the two fraudsters, who stole from her on Wednesday evening. She did not

want to be named, but relatives said: “They must have seen her big oxygen machine, and they must have seen her using her Zimmer frame.“ Yet they still went ahead and did what they did. It’s awful, especially at a time like this.

“Everyone’s raging, saying it can’t be someone from Bermondsey, because proper Bermondsey folk wouldn’t do this.”

Cops say they are pursuing the case, and urge anyone who has seen the two men who tricked their way into the woman’s home to contact them.

The family has also put up a £2,000 reward to help find the culprits. The victim, who has arthritis, mobility problems and a chronic lung condition, is “still shaken up and sore from the shock.”

Explaining what had happened, her daughter said: “At about five o’clock Wednesday evening she had a knock on the door and she opened it.”

There were two blokes. One of them said he was from Southwark Council, and he said there had been a leak from the upstairs flat.”

He said, ‘We’ve got to come in,” and then he said, ‘I’ve got to check your bedroom to make sure the leak isn’t coming through there.’”

My mum said as soon as they said about a leak, she just panicked, she said they seemed so genuine.”

One of the distraction burglars is described as white, in his thirties, clean-shaven, with short black hair.

He had a dark jacket on. The other was also white and clean-shaven with short ginger hair, aged in his

late twenties. He was wearing a blue checked shirt, blue jeans and white trainers. Once inside, one of the men tried to persuade the victim to get down to check underneath the sink as a distraction – which she cannot do because of her disabilities.

This was when her suspicions were aroused and she pressed the speed dial on her phone to her son.

She was screaming at them, ‘Get out of my house,’” close relatives say.

“Then they legged it out. But she noticed they had stolen her handbag out the living room with her purse inside.

“What she was worried about was the picture of my dad in there. I don’t care if it’s £40 or £400, they’re scum.”

The bag has since been recovered in Lewisham, according to family. But it is missing the money and house keys, although the locks have been changed.

Family think that the pensioner was purposefully chosen by the crooks, because of the coronavirus lockdown.

“I think she must have been watched for a while,” her daughter believes.

“They know it’s a lockdown.

“She’s not had any visitors apart from people dropping stuff off.”

The Met confirmed the theft and the con artists’ descriptions.

“On arrival police found an elderly woman had been the victim of a distraction burglary whereby two men had posed as plumbers to gain entry to her property,” a spokesman said.

“The two men stole the woman’s handbag and purse before leaving.”

Body is found in Southampton Way

A Met spokesperson confirmed the police were called at 3:34 pm on April 17 after reports of a man found unresponsive.

The London Fire Brigade also assisted as the body was found in an area described as 'structurally unsafe'.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Officers have given no other details other than saying he is believed to have been in his 60s.

The death is being treated as unexplained, but not suspicious.

Man is hospitalised after ‘knifing himself in throat’

A blaze in a block of flat in Kennington last week saw man and two children rescued by firefighters.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a flat on Draco Street in Kennington at 12.44pm on Thursday afternoon, April 16.

Most of a flat on the third floor of a five storey block was damaged by the fire.

A man and a woman left the affected flat before the Brigade arrived.

Firefighters rescued a man and two children from a fourth floor balcony via a turntable ladder. They were assessed on scene but there were no reports of any injuries.

The Brigade had the fire was under control by 1:34pm.

Fire crews from Lambeth, Peckham and Brixton fire stations were at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Police say they were called to a residence in Garter Way on Saturday evening to reports of the man “behaving erratically.”

When they got there, they discovered that the man was brandishing a knife. Cops fired a taser, but this was “unsuccessful.”

The police said the man, who is thought to be in his fifties, then injured himself in the throat with his knife. And they added that during the course of

the stand-off shortly before 5pm, two officers were spat at.

They were taken to hospital as a precaution. The coronavirus can be spread through spit.

He was rushed to hospital by the Air Ambulance service. In their latest update, cops said they did not believe his condition to be life-threatening.

On discharge, the man will be taken into custody, said Southwark Police, although it could not immediately give details of the offences for which he would be detained. “[This is] being treated as an isolated incident and there is no concern for any wider threat to the community,” say Southwark officers.

No other arrests were made.

DUTCH UNCLE TO HELP OUR Care workers A South Bank business has launched a campaign to ask remote workers to donate the cost of a coffee towards care workers during the pandemic.

Illustration agency Dutch Uncle put out the call last week for office workers to donate money normally spent on lunchtime coffees or trips to Pret a Manger towards carers.

The money will go towards the Care Workers’ Charity, which is raising £1m to support 2,000 care workers.

The charity pays workers £500 grants to substitute loss of income if they aren’t able to work due to ill-health or self-isolation during the coronavirus crisis.

“We’d heard a few friends in the creative industries saying how they’re actually saving money by working at home and thought, ‘what if that saving could be put to work for others?’”, said Sarah Westwood, the business’ creative strategist.

“It’s an uncertain time for everyone at moment but we know some salaried workers who are now remote working are seeing modest daily savings, from things like no longer buying a daily coffee or their usual work lunch, possibly being able to contribute to this fund so together we can make a huge difference.

“It’s common to feel quite helpless during the

crisis, knowing that these people are going out and risking their lives to look after others, so we designed this initiative as a way for all of us to begin paying them back.”

She added that some in the care sector might not be entitled to statutory sick pay, and that others will be taking part in the twelve-week ‘shielding’ process, both of which mean substantial loss of income.

The donations have been welcomed by the Care Workers’ Charity. Executive director Karolina Gerlich said the pandemic was “undoubtedly the biggest-ever challenge faced by the care sector and its employees.”

“Many care workers are themselves affected by underlying health conditions, immediately required to self-isolate for 12 weeks,” she said.

“We forecast around half of the sector’s 2 million employees will have to take time off work during this crisis so this fund-raising initiative will give them some of them a little bit more financial security if their circumstances suddenly change.”

The charity has set up a JustGiving page to support its fundraising, which can be found by searching ‘JustGiving COVID-19 Care Workers Crisis.’

At the time of writing, more than £300,000 had been raised by the generous public.

Olivia Prichard, 32, and Charlie Walker, 31, from Wooler Street aim to ride 450 miles on their stationary bike on May 1 - the distance from London to Edinburgh.

The pair, who are due to get married in August, say that while one rides the other will catch up on sleep and food before swapping over.

They will also be enlisting the help of a friend to mind their Staffie, Beamer, during the challenge.“Although we both enjoy the odd spinning class, we’ve never taken on such a challenge as this, but watching 99-year-old Tom Moore walk 100 laps of his garden we thought about what we could do to help our frontline NHS heroes,” says Olivia.Charlie added: “Like most couples, we would just watch a bit of telly and have a few beers on a Friday night. Event caterers Bubble have turned their Camberwell-based professional kitchen into a production line for St George the Martyr Church’s food bank and community fridge.

Borough Market grocers Turnips have delivered an incredible 2.5 tonnes of fresh produce to King’s College Hospital in the last weeks - along with recipe cards - so the hardworking staff don’t have to worry about queueing up after a long day.

They are part of the ‘Feed the Frontline’ initiative helping four hospitals in London and two in West Yorkshire.

The catering team are making around 100 meals a day, for at least the next month, which are being distributed in Borough High Street to elderly, homeless and low-income families.

FROM UPHOLSTERY TO SUPPLYING THOUSANDS OF PPE A Surrey Quays upholstery business has dedicated itself to making free protective masks for frontline healthcare workers in Southwark.

Marine Canvas Hut, based in South Dock, has made 4,000 of the visors, with orders coming in from Guy’s and St Thomas’, Romford and Maidstone hospitals. It estimates it can make up to 1,000 of the visors to NHS specifications a day - but needs donations to help pay for the cost of materials. The business’ owner, Miryam Brizuela, said: “We knew we could help, so we gathered a group of incredible and hardworking volunteers who live in the area, to work on the visors. After that, we didn’t stop producing them.“ The complications are finding the right materials as very quickly the suppliers are running out of stock.

hours we raised the target, and £450 more!

“Sarah now has a new bike (which she is buzzing about!) and is ready to start night shifts. It just shows how much you all care for Sarah, and how kindness will always win.”

KING’S NURSE BACK ON HER BIKE AFTER THIEVES STRUCK More than £800 was raised for a King's College Hospital nurse, Sarah, after her bike was stolen.

“We don’t really see the impact of our work directly, but what we do see is the big smiles on the faces of the social workers, pharmacists and care home staff when we tell them, they can have as many as they need and for free.”

An initial fundraising target of £3,000 has already been met, but more donations are needed to keep up the supply of the masks.

“They [key workers] are not getting the PPE that they need and they are at risk every day,” added Miryam.

“Every day we are asked by different professionals if we can provide these visors for them and sometimes it is heartbreaking to know, our visors are the only PPE they have.”

Spot of gardening in lockdown

A

cold spell at the end of March put a sudden check on growth; but higher temperatures arrived at the beginning of April which brought leaf and flower buds bursting into life.

April is usually chilly with north easterly winds - and they returned mid-month pushing temperatures down especially at night. Signs are it will remain cool, sunny and settled with very little rainfall during the month. But that could change!

The work schedule in the garden is increasing steadily; weeds need clearing before they get established.

That’s why we need to talk about Brexit.

It has come to light that the government missed the offer from Europe to participate in the joint procurement schemes for urgently needed medical supplies like ventilators, overalls and masks. I am pleased to hear ministers have begun talks with the EU - but it is not enough. Our selfless NHS staff urgently need this equipment to care for us and safeguard themselves. We should be working with Europe’s Early Warning and Response System for disease control across borders. The UK withdrew from EWRS this year, despite warnings from the NHS that this would make it harder to tackle a pandemic.

That’s why I’m supporting Best for Britain’s campaign to extend the Brexit transition period until after we have dealt with the Coronavirus. With heroes in the NHS working tirelessly to save us, we should do our part to ensure they have the equipment and international support they need. This is particularly relevant to Southwark, which voted

These include: COVID-19 testing and personal protective equipment (PPE) for all NHS and social care staff; those relying on social care must get immediate help if carers go sick; NHS support staff (including those outsourced) must receive at least the living wage, paid sick leave for illness or self-isolation and an increase in statutory sick pay; bring private health resources into public service without compensation; make all information being used by the government available for public scrutiny and an immediate end to eligibility checks and charging in the NHS, including those

related to residency status or national origin.

When we clap on Thursdays, that’s what we are clapping for. We also demand Southwark Council reverse 20 brutal, cavalier years of gentrification, and requisition all speculative properties, empty offices, retail spaces and hotels in the borough to: first, provide staffed and supported quarantine accommodation for those who need a safe space to isolate or get well - and then to house our homeless, overcrowded households, the unsafe (such as LGBTQ+ young people) and to rejuvenate the community groups that were wiped out by cuts.

We will do everything we can to highlight these issues in the coming weeks and months.

Testing just six care workers a day and having to tavel to get there is shambolic

W

hen the government announced it was ramping up testing to 100,000 a day and would be prioritising frontline health and social care workers it seemed that one headache for both sectors finally had a solution.

How do you maintain adequate staffing levels if a huge proportion of your workforce is off sick or selfisolating as a precaution - without actually knowing whether they have COVID-19, a cold or the flu?

And how can you judge when they can return to work if still in household lockdown for another week just in case?

But as we report this week, just six slots are available for Southwark care home workers a day.

And, in the last few weeks, care homes and hospices have told us the only testing they can access for staff is at the drive-through centre in Greenwich’s O2 - meaning they’d need a car to get there.

At repeated press conferences government spokespeople, including deputy chief medical officer Dr Jenny Harries, seemed to imply take-up was the problem; not capacity.

This blames carers and other staff for not queuing up outside the O2 when unwell, often hours from home.

What about testing on a scale and in geographic locations convenient for workers whether they have cars or not and in such a way that minimises travel and risk? Wasn’t that the whole point?

Fred Sirieix is best known for being the head waiter in Channel 4’s First Dates, a blind date programme in which singletons meet over a restaurant meal.

His latest offering is ‘The Restaurant That Burns Off Calories’, in which guests are given a slap-up meal, and then exercise that would burn off those calories is discussed.

It has drawn the anger of several in the cooking world. Great British Bake Off Star Ruby Tandoh slammed it as encouraging disordered eating.

“It horrifies me that the BBC would think this is remotely responsible programming at any time, let alone now,” she said.

The BBC has responded that the intention of the programme is “to give viewers information about the latest research into the science of calories, about why our bodies need them and how our bodies use them.”

What’s that in Burgess Park?

Spotted in Burgess Park at the weekend: a large scarlet macaw being taken for a ‘walk’ on a lead.

The pet, normally native to Central and South America, was filmed in the park being taken for a stretch of its wings while on a carry-on lead.

Officers are taking a dim view of those using parks for non-essential purposes - but does parrot-flying count as an essential reason to leave the house?

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Bermondsey's Kathleen Chaplin is believed to be one of three people to die in quick succession in her care home from coronavirus and her family had little to no contact as the lockdown stopped them from visiting.

The 91-year-old had been used to seeing her family since she moved into the Riverlee Care and Nursing Home in Blackheath suffering from dementia.

“I would take mum out every couple of days,” her daughter Sally told the News.

“Even with the lockdown we were popping by every three or four days with grapes and whatever mum needed, but we could not see her as it would just upset her. I don't think she would be able to understand why we were not coming in. And she was not one for FaceTime or Skype. We tried it, but I don't think the home were prepared for it; and mum, even with the dementia, was old school.”

For Sally and her brother John the only time they got to physically see her was when she was laid to rest, back in

Bermondsey at Albins' funeral home.

“When she was taken into Lewisham Hospital we called two or three times a day. The nurses would tell mum we would be in later. It was heartbreaking,” Sally said. “I just wanted to be there to hold her hand.”

Kathleen was hospitalised once she got a chest infection and after exactly one week she passed away on April 1.

Born and bred in Bermondsey, Kathleen and her family lived on the Tyers Estate, off Bermondsey Street and also Cherry Gardens Street, before she moved to Rotherhithe's Downtown area, where both Sally and John also live.

“Mum lived in St Elmo Road near Bacon's College before she moved into the home. The care home staff were brilliant with her, the staff at the hospital were also fantastic. I think mum was just very confused by it all and she kept pulling her oxygen off, but they gave her morphine to keep her restful. And since she passed away Albins have looked after her and us lovely.”

Kathleen's story is not an unusual one as more and more accounts of those dying come to light. The true extent of

those passing away from coronavirus in care homes is only now being recorded in the daily figures after a ferocious backlash from the public.

A spokesperson for Sanctuary Care, which runs Riverlee, told the News: “While we would not comment on the medical condition of any of our residents, we understand how worrying these unprecedented times are and can reassure their families that the safety of their loved ones is our absolute priority. We are in regular contact with the Department of Health and Social Care and other care providers to share information and best practice, and continue to closely follow the detailed public health guidance being given to care homes right across the country.”

Last week the Health Secretary Matt Hancock made a huge change, announcing families will be able to visit dying loved ones. “Wanting to be with someone you loved at the end of their life is one of the deepest human instincts and it's a moment that can be with you forever.

“Done right it can help those left behind and it brings comfort to those that are dying,” he said.

During the Downing Street Briefing

last Wednesday week he said that the death of Ismail Abdulwahab from Brixton at King's College Hospital affected him deeply.

“I have been really moved and upset by some of the heartbreaking stories of people dying without a loved one nearby. As the father of a thirteen-yearold myself the reports of Ismail, dying aged thirteen without a parent by his bedside made me weep,” he said.

But as new procedures are being introduced to limit the infection and, where possible, give loved ones the chance to say goodbye it is too late for Kathleen Chaplin's family and others including 34-year-old Terry Coakley also from Bermondsey. His family told the News they wanted nothing more than to give him a cuddle as he fought the disease at St Thomas' Hospital.

Kathleen's long life was devoted to her family, says Sally - she enjoyed nothing more than being at home and was totally smitten with her husband Albert, whom she met at a house party on Bermondsey's White Grounds Estate. They got married in 1949 aged 21 and 23 and celebrated their Diamond Wedding anniversary in July 1999.

Unfortunately by the December of that year Albert, who suffered from Parkinson's disease, died.

“Mum and dad were happily married,” Sally explained.

“Dad was an engineer and worked at Peek Freans Biscuit Factory and mum was a dress maker. Mum was never one for going out, but would pop to the pub, the George on Camilla Road or the Ancient Foresters with dad occasionally.

But she loved nothing more than a drive out with her Albie. The car window open, the wind in her hair and off they would go to Eastbourne for the day.”

Kathleen leaves behind four granddaughters and two great grandsons - and countless homemade dresses. “I would do the ironing and anything when I was young, as I wanted to get mum to make me a dress for a Saturday night out,” Sally laughed.

“I'd buy the dress patterns, go to East Lane Market to get the material and mum would make it. Whatever was in at the time. She made my wedding

The number of people to be diagnosed with COVID-19 in Southwark has now exceeded a thousand, as fears the UK will be one of the worst affected countries in Europe appear to be realised.

As of 4pm on Monday, April 20, there were a total of 124,743 recorded COVID-19 cases in the UK, with 4,676 new diagnoses reported within the previous 24-hours.

Regionally, London was still the most affected with more than 21,000 infected in total. Of those, 1,089 were diagnosed in Southwark. The only London boroughs to record higher figures were Croydon (1,187) and Brent (1,206).

Although the daily national death toll from the disease is showing signs of slowing down, and hospital admissions are believed to be levelling off - ‘flattening the curve’ - there is still no clear indication of how many Southwark residents have died from the disease.

The government publishes daily hospital deaths data but with King’s and Guy’s serving a large catchment it is unknown how many of those patients would have called Southwark home.

Figures on care home and other deaths within the community are published each week but these figures, for England and Wales, do not give a local authority breakdown.

So what do we know? The hospital death toll, published daily, had reached 16,509 on Monday but, the same day, the number to die within a 24-period dropped to its lowest level since April 6: 449.

We may possibly be past the peak in

London, but as yet are unsure just how many deaths are due to the disease.

It is known that King’s College NHS Foundation Trust recorded its first death on March 7. Now a total of 322 have died in its wards from COVID-19. Deaths have been listed every single day since March 16.

One day alone - March 30 - recorded 23 deaths. There are now signs the number is easing off.

As we have previously reported, the lag in receiving figures for outside-hospital deaths can mean daily figures hugely underreport COVID-19 mortality potentially by as much as 40 per cent.

Data from the Office for National Statistics, published weekly, is based on registered deaths and what has been listed on the certificate.

The latest available figures show that in one week, up to April 3, nearly half of all deaths in London (46.6 per cent) were attributed to COVID-19.

Up to April 10, nine-hundred-andseventy-five people are listed as dying in England’s care homes with COVID-19 believed to be a cause or contributing factor - a number not included in the government’s daily briefings.

The National Care Forum, an industry body representing residential homes, says by its own estimates 4,000 of its residents could have died after contracting the disease.

The numbers will do nothing to dispel fears the UK could be on course for the worst outbreak in Europe.

But only in the coming weeks and months, and when full borough-byborough breakdowns are made available, will we know for sure.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The family of a woman who has died during the Coronavirus outbreak have criticised the government’s now reversed decision to stop families from being present at COVID-19 patients’ deaths.

Nicola McSorley and George Orford lost their mother, Marguerite, last month.

COVID-19 was listed as a contributing factor to her death in St Thomas’ after she suffered a stroke and complications from other long-term conditions while living in Tower Bridge Care Home.

She was only meant to stay in the home on a temporary basis after moving in last November for rehabilitation for a badly broken bone. She had sustained the injury while living in her specially

adapted south Bermondsey flat, where she had lived for decades after moving from the demolished old Bonamy Estate.

Her family has been devastated by the impact of the lockdown after being unable to move her out or visit before she died, and say they still have unanswered questions about her final weeks.

Although unable to hold her during her illness and last moments they were asked to visit both the hospital and home after her death to collect Marguerite’s belongings.

“If it's a lockdown, it’s lockdown,” George told the News before health secretary Matt Hancock’s change of heart.

“I don’t understand why you can’t have people visiting a home or hospital if they take sensible precautions but you can have staff traveling in on public transport and going in and out because it’s ‘essential’? It doesn’t make sense.”

By Katherine Johnston St Christopher’s Hospice’s chief executive says her staff have enough PPE for now but managing supply is her biggest challenge.

“We had a good drop-off about three weeks ago but haven’t had anything in the last fortnight and don’t know when we’ll get our next delivery,” Heather Richardson told the News.

The Sydenham-based hospice, recently rated ‘outstanding’ by the care regulator, has stocked up with help from the wider community after a call for help on social media saw dentists, vets and even nail bars step in and donate their own stock.

“The enduring problem is knowing when it’s coming,” she explained, saying she personally is spending huge amounts of time sourcing items.

As more hospices, care homes and NHS workers depend on donated items - some of which are not made to specification - it raises concerns they are being forced to use equipment that may not be sterile or have defects.

Acknowledging this is a concern, she explains: “At the moment we are balancing the risks of no PPE versus having some from suppliers we wouldn’t usually use.”

On the question of whether new government guidance on re-using certain items had caused alarm, she explains the challenge for the hospice is listening to what staff need and what makes them feel safer, but she also has to accept that supply is a worry - leading them to balance risks ‘daily’.

The hospice has 32 on-site beds for people needing round-the-clock care and supports a further 1,300 people with at-home palliative care.

The virus poses a further challenge to the hospice as not only are they protecting long-standing patients, they are also caring for some suspected and confirmed COVID-19 patients at the end of life - including those arriving from hospitals.

In their final days and hours they are able to have one loved one by their side.

Although some staff and patients have had confirmed or suspected COVID-19, she says there is no reason to suspect that crosscontamination has happened in the hospice, but like all other hospitals, homes and hospices they are often in the dark about how or when someone contracted the illness and taking up testing - offered in Greenwich for frontline staff - isn't easy if someone can't travel or is too unwell.

“It is very stressful for them but they are doing an amazing job,” she says. “We have seen the best of our workforce at this time. They are being creative, and trying their best, and putting in extra hours during a challenging time with a lot of tragedy.”

The hospice, a charity, has had to cancel all fundraising events and close all 26 of its charity shops during the outbreak.

in Southwark Writer Wants Us To Fight For Our Rights

Anxious cellist hopes for healthy change after the virus Bermondsey musician, cello tutor and freelance performer Michelle So would usually be found playing with symphony and opera orchestras but Covid-19 has put a temporary stop on those activities, writes Michael Holland...

Michelle started to play at a young age, then studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the RNCM in Manchester. She says, ‘I kept practicing and took audition after audition, built up my work, and kept doing what I needed to, to keep growing.’

What do you love about it? ‘I love that I have the chance to use my senses and imagination everyday. There's a human need to work with the hands and feel, so this is something that's really satisfying.

Also, music inspires and moves, and I love my part in lifting people up.’

What have been the highlights?

‘Everything, really. I feel fortunate that I enjoy what I do. I especially enjoy playing in ballets at the Royal Opera House - Manon's my favourite. There are so many beautiful melodies, and the dancers are so expressive, I get really into it. I also love all the travelling, like

when I studied in retreat settings with other cellists from around the world, or going on tour, performing in new places.’

Lowlights? ‘Anxiety has been a challenge... performance anxiety, next pay cheque anxiety, other kinds of anxiety... But you find your way through it through experience and introspection.

And during difficult times, the music gives back to you.’

How has Covid-19 impacted on your profession?

‘With all concert halls and theatres closed, orchestra players furloughed, arts organisations cancelling productions and struggling from lost income, it's quite a serious situation. Some groups may not survive unfortunately. Maybe there will be ways to ensure the health of arts organisations from future crises, maybe live music will become more intimate. Right now, not being able to gather has made organisations and musicians find means of sharing music digitally. People are also looking for other ways to connect to performance, so it's nice that they're able to meet each other online.’

Garth Cartwright grew up in Auckland, New Zealand but now dwells in Peckham Park Road and enjoys his great loves of music and writing as a freelance journalist, author and DJ/events promoter, writes Michael Holland...

Garth started writing about local punk bands as a teenager: “I had no musical talent – couldn’t even play punk rock guitar! - so got into writing on the scene,” he says. “I quickly found I enjoyed writing and wanted to write on lots of other things too. Eventually I won journalism awards sponsored by Qantas and that’s what got me to London. Once here it took me several years to get any breaks in getting work as a freelance journalist – in 1996 I won an award sponsored by The Guardian that got me work contributing to that publication and off I went. Writing books grew out of journalism while the monthly Princes Amongst Men music night I host at The Ritzy in Brixton grew out of my first book (Princes Amongst Men: Journeys With Gypsy Musicians).

I guess you could say they’re organic developments of what the Rastas’ call “word – sound – power!”’

Garth’s life has many exciting facets: “I’m always interested in communicating with people and writing allows me to do this. Telling stories, really, as I like to meet individuals and report on their lives and achievements – whether exceptional or ordinary. This has allowed me to travel in many parts of the world and write a series of books, the most recent being Going For A Song: A Chronicle Of The UK

Record Shop – the only one of my books so far to feature South London (covering as it does historic record shops in Peckham, New Cross, Walworth, Brixton, Camberwell – plus many other places!).

That said, Princes Amongst Men does start in Camberwell with me watching the Gypsy squeegee merchants at the traffic lights before I head off for the Balkans! As for DJ-ing and putting on live music, well, its such a pleasure to be sharing music with other people. I’ve booked the likes of Wizz Jones and Charlie Harper and Big Joe Louis alongside top young folk and East European bands. As I spend so much time crate digging in record shops DJ-ing is a chance to play my 45s out!”

But all the fun does have some downsides: “Print journalism has been in decline ever since the internet took hold and, these days, I earn less than I did when starting out in the mid-90s. There are less newspapers and magazines to contribute to and many have slashed their rates. And getting book deals is punishingly difficult – then once there is a deal I work far harder on writing a book than any kind of financial recompense. Like all the arts, there’s an obsessive element to what I do. Not that I’m complaining, I just wish things weren’t always such a struggle.”

And Covid-19 has also had a negative effect: “Its closed magazines, seen newspapers cut back, shut the Ritzy and all other music venues … an absolute disaster. The crisis has reduced me from working poor to penury.”

To get through this crisis Garth says, “I go for a cycle when I need a break from

council flat fever. Beyond that, I read and listen to music and communicate with friends and family and try and research possible topics for future books.

Considering how so many people are suffering terribly right now I’m very fortunate so I give thanks and appreciate all that I have.”

The writer has some serious thoughts on Britain after the Lockdown? “Many independent traders will be decimated.

The worst in our society will have ever more power and money. That said, the crisis has shown how generous and compassionate our communities can be – hopefully there will be a grassroots movement to ensure this does not dissipate. Everyone needs to support independent traders – whether cafés, record/book/clothes shops, street markets or whatever else – and avoid the supermarkets and multinationals when possible. Act local, think international – we literally are all in this together. That said, one thing is for sure: the Tories will not be aiming to make the post-pandemic UK a kinder, gentler, more tolerant nation.

It’s down to us to continue to struggle for this – and to ensure the essential workers in the NHS and elsewhere are not discarded once this is over while those in power return to treating them with contempt. A worst case scenario would see the wealthiest profiting from the pandemic and our rights being further rolled back. Remember, we have to fight for our rights – and this includes those of everyone here, no matter what nationality, ethnicity et al.”

What do you plan to do to get through this current crisis?

'I was able to change over all my teaching to online classes - it's brilliant the technology is all there.

I'm also appreciating the time to work on personal creative projects experimenting, writing and recording and I'm practising, to stay in shape with

my playing. I also signed up to volunteer in the community so I hope to help out since I'm able.’

How different do you think your life will be once we get back to normal?

‘IHowsee the light’ a pioneering doctor built a

solarium up from old street lamps

History We’d all like a bit more sunshine in our lives, but during the inter-war years in Bermondsey, a doctor was so dazzled by the medicinal power of natural sunlight that he set about constructing the nation’s first purpose built solarium from discarded street lamps.

In 1924 Dr R King Brown attended a lecture at Guy’s Hospital by the eminent Dr Auguste Rollier of Switzerland who spoke of the transformative healing powers of sunshine in curing all manner of diseases where he was based in the Alps.

“It literally made me see the light for the first time,” said Dr King Brown in a BBC interview in 1930.

The aghast audience were shown photographs of children and adults with “crippled limbs and bent backs, thin, miserable looking objects” who were restored to a picture of health, showing a difference which was “almost miraculous,” according to the good doctor.

“As a medical man I am not supposed to deal in miracles, “said Dr King Brown, “but I thought then, as I do still, that these cures by sunlight could hardly be described by any other word.”

Tuberculosis was rife in Bermondsey and without a cure at that time, fatalities were high. But overcrowding, poor living conditions and sanitation also led to a proliferation of illnesses like rickets, bronchitis, and alopecia.

After visiting Switzerland to see Dr Rollier’s work in action, King Brown arranged for a handful of sun-starved Bermondsey children and adults to be sent to Leysin in Switzerland to catch some rays.

The “excellent results” spurred King Brown on further but the problem was bringing the blazing Alpine sunshine to Bermondsey. “You have all heard that sunlight is the best doctor, but the trouble is to get an appointment with him,” quipped King Brown, who was not put off by the small obstacle of a lack of natural sunlight.

He approached the Electric Light Department at the Town Hall and got them to rig up five old discarded

street lamps in a big room at the Tuberculosis Dispensary, then operating out of 108 Grange Road.

For a year King Brown tinkered with the lamps and all kinds of cases to try to replicate natural sunlight.

“We were satisfied we could reproduce artificially in Bermondsey the curative effects of the natural sun in the Alps,” said King Brown.

When he reported the results of his year of light experiments to the council, he found them to be as excited as he was and they gave him a free hand to create the country’s first purpose built solarium in 1926. The council bought a house in Grange Road and installed a complete set of rooms for artificial sunlight treatment.

Hanovia Ltd, responsible for constructing the new centre described it as “probably the largest of its kind in the world” with the capacity to bathe 1,600 people a day in artificial sun rays.

Many of the borough’s older residents will remember playing in the ‘floodlight rooms’ with their gold-bronze finishes, primrose walls and green rubber floors painted with broad white stripes to keep everyone at the right distance from the powerful lamps.

“In the children’s section nothing could be lovelier than the floodlit room in which the naked children play with toys under the streams of light,” read an article in the John Bull Sunday newspaper in 1949. “They are being saved from deformity, disease and death even while they play.”

By 1935, annual attendance had reached 30,000. The centre employed three nurses, with more than 30 lamps in daily use.

In 1936 an extensive new public health centre was built in Grange Road - thanks to the efforts of Dr Alfred Salter and his revolutionary work raising awareness of health issues in Bermondsey. A whole floor was dedicated to the solarium in the new centre, which is where the ‘Solarium Court’ buildings are now.

news@southwarknews.co.uk Lions manager Gary Rowett said the attitude of chairman John Berylson right down to players and staff has “solidified” his opinion of a club he praised as well-run and well-financed.

While other clubs are struggling without gate receipts in the COVID-19 outbreak he said that chairman John Berylson and chief executive Steve Kavanagh “have

been very positive - trying to find solutions to issues.”

“This is a fabulous club with a really supportive owner who tries to think about other people rather than himself,” said Rowett.

“This crisis has been hard to watch. But in these situations, you realise what a good organisation you work for.

“The staff and the players have stepped up. I know that is different to the way NHS staff have shown such courage, but the reaction of Millwall people has shown how

people deal with bad times. It has solidified my opinion of this club.

“Everyone is just trying to get through this the best way they can.

I am sure when we all come out of this, we will all appreciate much better what we have got.

“Amidst the tragedy of the loss of life and the sadness, we will appreciate more the things we took for granted.”

“Most of our players and staff would do whatever it takes to help the club and the community out,” he said.

“But I don’t think a wage cap would have a massive impact on us. I would imagine any cap would be well above what we pay. And that just highlights how well this club has been run for a number of years.”

Millwall said they were ‘saddened to hear of the passing’ of Bill, who was signed in August 1961 from Plymouth Argyle to fill what was the problematic outside-left position.

Wright, who started his career in 1950, with his hometown club Blackpool, where he was an understudy to the great Stanley Matthews, died on April 14th, just six weeks off his 89th birthday.

His debut at The Den against Workington saw a 5-0 drubbing of the league leaders, a game which would see him embark on a run of a dozen consecutive appearances.

In a tribute to Bill the club wrote on its website: “His stooping demeanour belied his pace and skill on the ball, but Wright was a tad injury prone despite his early promise, the signing of Terry McQuade saw the writing on the wall for Bill’s stay at Cold Blow Lane.

“His last game as a Lion came in the home victory over Chester in January 1962. Bill left The Den after just sixteen appearances the following summer and joined Tonbridge and then later assisted Bexley United.”
