King's debt had reached record levels more than half a billion overall, with an annual deficit of anywhere between £170180 million each year. The trust had been placed in financial special measures as a result.

Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes, (pictured), has long campaigned for the debt to be wiped and more funding channelled into the NHS. A decade ago, King's College Hospital had a balanced budget and achieved all its main targets.

“After five years of campaigning hard to ensure that King’s is put on a firm financial footing, I am pleased that the Tory government has finally listened to sense and agreed to write off this huge historic debt of more than half a billion pounds," Hayes said.

"I pay tribute to the extraordinary commitment, skill and hard work of

the King’s team during the COVID-19 pandemic, and I thank them for all that they are doing on behalf of all my constituents at this very difficult time.

“No hospital trust could ever have paid off such a huge debt. But now we must see a significant increase in the annual budget for the trust so that we can put behind us the last ten years of financial problems at King’s and staff at the hospital can focus on their job – putting patients first and delivering the excellent care the hospital is rightly renowned for.”

The decision to clear thirteen billion of historic NHS debt came last week in an announcement from health minister Matt Hancock, who said: "As we tackle this crisis, nobody in our health service should be distracted by their hospital’s past finances.

"Today’s £13.4 billion debt write off will wipe the slate clean and allow NHS hospitals to plan for the future and invest in vital services.

"I remain committed to providing the NHS with whatever it needs to tackle coronavirus, and the changes to the funding model will give the NHS immediate financial certainty to plan and deliver their emergency response."

"The Foreign and Commonwealth Office responded to my emails only (with the exception of Vietnam) with generic advice that did not relate to the situation of the individual about whom I’d contacted them.

"Clearly the consular offices are dealing with a huge number of stranded UK citizens and many of the staff are unable to be at work because they are ill or self-isolating.

"And clearly the FCO are working hard to arrange scheduled flights home. But it is important for a stranded individual to know that their consulate knows they are there and knows what they are doing on their behalf.

Repatriation flights fund has come ‘too late’

Despite a £75 million repatriation fund announced by the government and thousands already helped home, many still have no set date for flights back to the UK. Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes said that although the announcement was a positive step, constituents of hers remained trapped overseas and the support had come 'too late'.

She told the News: "I am pleased that the foreign secretary has finally agreed to a programme to help my constituents return home to the UK. "This is welcome news for Southwark and Lambeth residents still trapped overseas in

‘We Love the NHS’

Bermondsey’s World Cup estate have the flags out again, and this time they are cheering on frontline staff at hospitals and care homes

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey estate which hit headlines around the world for its flags during the World Cup has got them out once again - this time to thank the NHS.

The Kirby Estate has become wellknown for its St George’s flags decorating the whole estate when there is a game on.

But now the flags are up to pay tribute to the hard work of our nurses and doctors battling night and day to keep us

safe from the coronavirus.

Residents on the estate have arranged the flags to spell out: “We love the NHS,” with a heart.

One tenant on the estate, Chris Dowse, said: “This year was always going to be a struggle on the Kirby getting any flags up due to Southwark Council’s definition of ‘major works.’”

“But, where there is a will... there's a way.”

Video footage taken on the estate shows it also erupting into applause on Thursday evening as part of the national

‘Clap for our Carers’ campaign at 8pm weekly.

The estate was last featured in the News after residents decorated it to commemorate Remembrance Day. Previously it had found itself gaining international attention when tenants put up more than 300 flags to cheer on Gareth Southgate and his World Cup England team.

Sadly, despite the massive support, England did not make it all the way, getting knocked out in the semi-finals 2-1 to Croatia.

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Rotherhithe estate has found a novel way to break the lockdown boredom - by playing socially distant bingo.

Residents of the Swan Estate behind the Brunel Pub gathered took to their landings on Sunday afternoon to play the game, with a bingo caller standing in the square’s centre to shout out the numbers.

It was the brainchild of resident Wendy Roberts, 43, who told the News she came up with the concept to make sure people in her close-knit community weren’t feeling lonely.

“I wasn’t sure how it was going to go,” she said. “But it was about fifteen families in the end. We’re going to do it next Sunday as well.

“We’ve got quite a nice little community, everyone looks out for each other, we’re quite close knit.”

Wendy, who has lived on the estate for 25 years, gave each household a book to

play with which she had left over from another game.

Along with her friend, Lisa O’Mara, Wendy set up a table in the middle of the estate for people to collect prizes after winning their games for the ‘Bingo Boredom Buster’.

Another resident was also on hand to relay the numbers further down the estate to make sure everyone could play along.

Prizes included tree cuttings, books, chocolate and household items, said Wendy. And it’s not the only thing residents of this estate have been doing during the lockdown either.

One tenant, who is in her eighties says Wendy, has even been coming onto her landing to sing Vera Lynn’s ‘We’ll Meet Again’ every Thursday after the regular clap for the NHS. “She sings Vera Lynne and stuff like that,” she says.

The bingo is set to be a regular fixture on the estate for as long as the lockdown lasts. “It whiles away an hour!” says Wendy.

council boss wants £25M shortfall to be plugged

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council is facing a £25million black hole in its finances over the coronavirus crisis.

According to council leader, Peter John, the local authority is facing the budget shortfall as revenue streams dry up and expenditure rockets on support schemes for businesses and residents.

Officials at the town hall estimate that it will have an approximate £25m funding gap over three months of the coronavirus crisis.

“If things carry on as they are, we will have a £25m funding gap,” said Cllr John. “At the moment we’re hoping that the government will make good on its pledge to look after us.”

The town hall was given £11m in central government funding at the outbreak of this crisis, part of which was made available for a requirement to house rough sleepers.

“But that’s already been used up,” said

Cllr John. The collapse of revenue such as rental income and fines have eaten up income which the council might normally use for expenditure.

The council boss has called on the government to cancel local authority debt amid the growing storm facing town hall finances.

Such a move has already been approved for hospitals, with King’s College NHS Trust among those having its debts cancelled by the government, following campaigning from MP Helen Hayes.

The unenviable financial picture is among the reasons why Southwark cannot provide a fund to ensure all children in the borough have access to laptops, said Cllr John.

As the News reported last week, Southwark is facing a legal challenge over education provision, as poorer pupils in the borough may not have access to internet or technology for distance learning.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Neil Coyle was almost hospitalised while suffering from Coronavirus so severe he was struggling to ‘get enough oxygen while gasping for breath’.

The Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP says he only left the house for the first time on Good Friday after more than a month in isolation.

“I had a cough come on one day, and then the temperature appeared,” he said.

“The night sweats were like nothing I’ve ever known, I’d wake up and my hands would be so wet with sweat they’d be wrinkly like I’d been in the bath.

“The physical aches, the fatigue, night sweats and cramps were uncomfortable but it was the coughing that was most draining.

“You’re continually coughing and your body can’t get enough oxygen in. I have asthma but have never had an asthma attack.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Police have launched an investigation after a man was stabbed in Peckham’s Rye Lane last Thursday night.

Officers say the stabbing took place at 9pm, and that the 19-year-old victim is not thought to be in a “life-threatening condition.”

Nobody has yet been arrested in connection with the stabbing, said police in their most recent update to the News, who said the victim remains in hospital.

One witness said they believed the incident happened by the Tesco Express on Rye Lane. This was not confirmed by police despite a request for further information from this paper.

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk An urgent appeal was launched to save popular Surrey Docks Farm from closure last week – only a day after it was targeted by a thief.

“After eleven days I phoned my GP who said if I didn’t improve I would have to go to hospital. He prescribed me a stronger inhaler and it really helped. From then on I began to get better.

“I am relatively fit and healthy and it knocked me for six. I couldn’t even read a book I felt so ill and had no focus.

Fortunately his wife and daughter were already at his mother-in-law’s home when he came down with the illness and have not been exposed to the virus. It’s a relief, he says, even though it meant not being with Esme on her fourth birthday.

“It is hard,” he says of being apart, “but people have been dropping things round to me and my team are all set up to work from home and have been fantastic, so they’re still doing their casework and I’m back on my feet again.

“I just want to urge people to stay at home. Having had the virus and being thankful it wasn’t as serious as it could have been, I’m worried that I’m still seeing people including teenagers going the park with their gym kit and their friends.

“They’re still spreading it.”

Police appeal after teenager stabbed

Help Surrey Docks farm after break-in

The city farm is normally open seven days a week, but the coronavirus crisis has caused it to close temporarily.

Income has plunged – but to take care of the farm’s animals still costs £7,000 a month, it says.

To add to the farm’s troubles, only last week it was the victim of a theft in which a strimmer was stolen from its tool shed.

“Last night our alarms went off, within minutes staff were on site, but we found our tool shed had been broken into and the strimmer stolen,” it said.

“We’re devastated by this attack at an already worrying time for the

Farm.”

Now a fundraiser has been launched to help take care of the animals and cover the costs of feed and bedding.

In a stark message to its many supporters in the community, the farm warns: “The financial future of the farm is now in the balance and we need your help to survive.

“Along with [the] loss of activity, we’re also losing all associated income.

We’ve reduced our expenditure wherever possible but we still have to spend £7,000 a month just to cover the cost of the livestock team, animal feed and bedding, plus any medicine and treatments.”

Animals at the farm include a small herd of goats, pigs called Winnie, Marmalade and Rupert, and two donkeys called Alice and Hermione.

An initial target on the fundraiser was set at £21,000, and at the time of writing, more than half of that had been raised at £13,789.

Baby fox Bobby rescued

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Firearms cops have rescued a baby fox while on patrol in Southwark over the bank holiday weekend.

Officers from the Met’s Firearms Command say they were patrolling across the borough on Sunday when they came across ‘Bobby’ – a distressed baby fox.

Members of the public had found Bobby on his own, with no sign of his parents.

But coppers cared for him until a charity dedicated to fox care, The Fox Project, could take over.

“Officers were flagged down by

members of the public who had come across this distressed baby fox,” said MPS Firearms Command on social media.

“With no sign of its parents, officers cared for it until The Fox Project could take over #NotJustGuns.”

According to the charity which has now taken over the care of Bobby, he is well on his way to making a full recovery.

Once he is able to, Bobby will be reintroduced to the wild so that he can be reunited with his friends.

Officers added: “Update from The Fox Project charity is that baby fox ‘Bobby’ is doing well and on his way to making a full recovery.

“Once he’s ready, he’ll be introduced back into the wild.”

91-year-old lost dad in the Blitz and dies in the pandemic

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Tributes have been paid from all over the world to an old-school Bermondsey gentleman who has passed away aged 91.

Bill Brenland was well-known around Bermondsey’s Blue, where he had lived for nearly five decades before sadly passing away from pneumonia.

But he was known further afield too, for videos on local history on YouTube, which his daughter Sally uploaded for him.

Bill was born in 1928, and had his formative years during the war. Like many of that generation, he knew tragedy as a result of the Blitz.

On the first day of the bombing, Bill had been out playing outdoors with his sister. His father went looking for him but was forced to shelter inside Keeton’s Road School.

The school took a direct hit - and Bill’s dad was among those killed.

As a result of these tough years, being brought up by a single mother of twelve

children, Bill was always determined to provide for his family, relatives say.

“His mum didn’t get help from anyone.

So it was hard for him growing up my dad had this thing where he went without so he would make sure we didn’t,” says his daughter Sally.

The family man had started work aged fourteen - he could only afford a pair of lady’s shoes to work in, so had to cut the heels off.

In time, he became an engineer on the Thames flood defences before becoming a park keeper for the council.

When not working Bill loved gardening, a game of bingo, which he rarely won, and had an extensive collection of bits and bobs which he would always find a use for.

He loved animals, too. Sally remembers bringing home all manner of wounded and stray animals to their home in Southwark Park Road growing up.

“I just used to take stray cats home, especially the sick ones,” she said. “And he used to stay up all night, he would put some Bovril in an eyedropper to feed them.”

Bill was devoted to his grandchildren

and great grandchildren, having eight grandchildren and at least twenty great grandchildren.

Sadly, because of the coronavirus pandemic, only ten people were allowed to attend Bill’s funeral on April 9, with others watching over the internet.

“I would’ve given him the biggest funeral Bermondsey has ever seen, but because of the circumstances we weren’t able to,” says Sally.

She has placed a plaque to Bill in her home in the New Forest - and a candle she has lit in his memory since the day of the funeral has not gone out.

“It’s a life to celebrate, not to mourn,” says Sally. “He was my dad and my best friend. He was a friend to all and an enemy to no-one - proper old school, they don’t make men like that any more.

“He would’ve said: ‘Farewell Bermondsey and Rotherhithe - until we meet again.’”

Family of Terry Coakley set funeral date for the popular Bermondsey boy

kevin@southwarknews.co.uk The family of Terry Coakley, who aged 34 fell victim to coronavirus, have announced that his funeral will be held on Monday May 11 and will be live-streamed by Bermondsey funeral directors Albins.

His sudden death has shocked friends in Bermondsey, who are now raising money for a plaque and a donation to the doctors and nurses who battled to save him for over two weeks at St Thomas’ Hospital.

Initially hoping to raise just £1,000, the target has been well and truly smashed, with £7,487 donated at the time of writing.

Terry's father David told the News: “His friends have done such an amazing

job. It is so heartwarming how well he was liked. We plan to have the funeral go from our home, through the Blue and if Millwall allow us through the carpark and in front of the stand. After this is all over we will have a proper big memorial for our Terry.”

Where the plaque will be placed for the popular Millwall fan has still not be decided, but the family are going to be talking to the club about what can possibly be done at the ground.

In an emotional interview with the News last week, Terry's younger sister Toni, who grew up with him on the Longfield Estate, said: “If you can take anything away from this, it is the need to look after yourselves, protect yourselves and do as you are told.”

She said that any money raised should go to the actual nurses and doctors who looked after him, adding: “That it what

The family have been comforted by the hundreds of messages they have received after his tragic death, which was made all the more heart-wrenching as they could not be with him as he died.

They said they welcomed everyone who knew him to tune into the livestreaming of the service at Honor Oak Crematorium, as only ten immediate family members will be able to attend.

Emma, who had been volunteering at Rotherhithe's Time & Talents, for over sixteen years suffered a heart failure at home on March 18.

Her sudden death shocked her family, who had been in touch with her less than a hour before her carer found her at her home in Jacobs House on Chambers Street in Bermondsey.

Emma had been unwell since Christmas, but her stepfather Eddie had been with her that day and had called to check on her less than an hour before her carer visited her home.

Despite having learning difficulties Emma was very independent and enjoyed making jewellery, attending concerts and Tai-Chi. But above everything else she loved volunteering, helping elderly people on and off buses at the Time & Talents community centre on St Marychurch Street. She went on countless outings with them, and its Neighbourhood Co-ordinator Cindy Glover told the News: “She will be greatly missed. She was amazing and we have known Emma for twenty years, when she came here first as a min-bus escort. She then helped run our group for older women, making tea, chatting with them. They would call her their angel. She loved taking them on theatre outings, especially to the Brick Lane musicals, as well as west-end shows like Lion King.”

Emma's mum Evelyn said: “She was a very clever girl, very kind and considerate and I don't think I realised just how many people's lives she touched until she was gone.

So many people have been in touch, but we won't be able to give her the funeral she deserves. It is bad enough, but this situation is making it worse.

“Her sister is coming down from Birmingham. I have been selfisolating as I have COPD, so we'll have to go to the crematorium in our own cars. I plan to have a memorial after the lockdown for her friends.”

But the service on May 11 will be livestreamed and Evelyn said that she welcomes people to tune in and pay their respects at home.

Bermondsey funeral directors Albins have been offering the livestreaming since the coronavirus outbreak took hold and restrictions were put in place preventing only close family members from attending all services.

The News will publish details of how to watch her funeral on livestream nearer the date.

Isla Caton, 5, is well-known to Millwall and West Ham fans alike - as the fierce rivalry is often put aside for fans to fundraise for the little tot.

Her mum Nikki, 40, has been forced this month to go to Spain while it is under strict lockdown to continue Isla’s treatment after a relapse - or face the risk of the cancer killing her five-year-old.

She told the News that she was scared one of the family may get coronavirus, but that they had no other choice to save their daughter.

“It’s so scary,” she said. “We’re really worried that something’s going to happen to one of us. But there was no other option - I can’t stress it enough, there was no other choice.”

Isla has been receiving experimental private treatment at a hospital in Barcelona, which is not available on the NHS in the UK. The treatment - partly paid for

by Millwall fans fundraising for the Hammers toddler - was initially successful.

But cruelly, in January a scan revealed new spots of the tumour on Isla’s arm and eyelid.

Initially, Nikki and husband Michael had planned to travel between the UK and Spain for Isla’s antibody treatments, which are one week on, three weeks off.

But the pandemic has suspended travel. And clinical trials which could have helped Isla were closed down due to the coronavirus outbreak in the UK, as they were repurposed to help find a Covid-19 vaccine, says Nikki.

The Camberwell and Peckham MP and chair of parliament's Human Rights Committee wrote to Rishi Sunak this week, asking him to fully cover pregnant women and new parents in government guidance.

Although there is no evidence that COVID-19 is particularly harmful to expectant mums, pregnant women are classed as a vulnerable group and have been advised to self-isolate for twelve weeks along with elderly people and those with pre-existing conditions.

Although the government's job retention scheme - where staff can be put on 'furlough' with 80 per cent of their wages paid by the government during the crisis - has had a huge take-up Harman says there have been cases of pregnant women kept on statutory sick pay instead. This amounts to just £95.85 per week.

Campaigning group Maternity Action has also reported some cases of women being paid statutory maternity pay at 80 per cent normal rate, instead of being furloughed.

Another grey area that could be exploited by employers is the income support scheme for the self-employed. So far, information released by the government does not take into account parental leave.

It is unclear if maternity or other

types of leave would be included as 'continuous employment'.

"It is also unclear how Maternity Allowance will be treated under the self-employed income support scheme. Can you provide clarification that a self-employed woman will not be disqualified from the scheme if she is eligible for Maternity Allowance during this period," Harman requested.

Campaigning group Maternity Action has put together a Q&A based on the latest information published by the government, explaining pregnant women's rights. Its team has also warned that women receiving Maternity Allowance will face more difficulty claiming Universal Credit.

In a letter to the chancellor this week, the group said: "Under the Universal Credit Regulations 2013, Maternity Allowance is treated as ‘unearned income’ and is deducted pound for pound, whereas statutory maternity pay (and also Statutory Sick Pay) is treated as ‘earnings’ and is largely disregarded under the Work Allowance and 63 per cent taper.

"This inequitable treatment of Maternity Allowance can result in women losing out on Universal Credit altogether. In 2019, more than half of all women granted Maternity Allowance also applied for Universal Credit, and in the current circumstances that proportion is likely to increase.

"A fair approach would ensure that Maternity Allowance is treated in the same way as statutory maternity pay is currently under the Universal Credit regulations."

“I’ve not left the house since we got here unless it’s to go to the hospital,” mum Nikki said.

The dash to get to Spain before it was impossible to travel meant the family have only brought the barest essentials.

“Isla doesn’t even have any toys,” she said. “I didn’t even bring her an Easter egg. I feel so bad, but I can’t go around the shops hunting for it.

“She hasn’t even started school yet.

We had a month of normality [last year] and then it was all snatched away.

“She’s been begging me to go to school, she doesn’t understand. She was really happy to get back to the UK, and she’s confused why she’s had to come back, so she’s a little upset.

“It’s such a hard thing - how do you explain it to a five year old?”

After Isla’s relapse, money that would have gone towards a vaccine has now had to be spent on another round of antibody treatment.

And the ban on public gatherings has cancelled around £80,000 worth of fundraising events which would have paid for Isla’s treatment.

“It’s about eighty thousand worth of events,” says Nikki. “That’s Isla’s six months of treatment. We’ve got to find the money ourselves, because there’s nothing coming in.”

The Caton family say they are grateful to anyone who donates to the JustGiving page to pay for Isla’s treatment, even if it is just a pound.

They need to raise £150,000 again if Isla is clear after these six months of treatment and does not relapse.

“We’re so grateful for everything people do,” said Nikki. “Each pound takes us a step closer, it takes such a weight off our mind.

“And if people can’t give money, if they could come up with an idea for us to raise money that would be wonderful.

“As long as we stay healthy, that’s all that matters. As long as Isla is OK everything else can be fixed.”

Businesses at the popular attraction are unable to claim business rates relief, as they do not pay these directly to the council.

Instead, the market as a whole is deemed the bill payer – meaning traders could be missing out on up to £2million in government grants, warns MP Neil Coyle.

In a letter to the Chancellor, Mr Coyle said: “In the current circumstances, traders deserve all the support that they can get, but due to the unique make-up of Borough Market and the system put in place by the Government, stallholders are being denied access to the cash grants that have been made available for small businesses.

“I am sure this was unintentional and can be remedied.”

Borough Market was dealt a severe blow in the aftermath of the 2017 London Bridge terror attack – which

forced it to close temporarily – and this exemption could jeopardise its recovery, said Mr Coyle.

“In 2017 Borough Market faced the unprecedented challenge of recovering from the impact of the London Bridge terror attack,” added the Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP. “Since then it has continued to go from strength to strength, but failing to support it at this crucial time would jeopardise its recovery from the tragedy it experienced less than three years ago.”

The gap in the government’s support program affects those small businesses who pay business rates collectively.

Small businesses in retail, hospitality and leisure are eligible for grants of up to £25,000.

But government guidance states: “Businesses which are not ratepayers in the business rates system are not included in this scheme.”

Borough Market is continuing to operate throughout the crisis, as it supplies food. However, social distancing measures are being enforced, and deliveries have also been expanded.

The appeal – ‘Can I Go To The Pub?’ – also has a range of downloadable posters to put up inside your windows to encourage other people to stay at home.

Last year the food bank’s chief executive Chris Price told the News that around 80 per cent of new people coming through its doors do so because of Universal Credit, and that demand had shot up by a third since the benefits system change in 2017.

Fooditude opens community kitchen in Bermondsey A contract catering company based in Bermondsey has re-opened as a community kitchen delivering hundreds of meals to self-isolating people across Southwark.

Fooditude normally supplies tech-media firms but closed its professional kitchen on March 23 after dwindling orders. The first 400 meals were delivered on April 3, an output the team says can be doubled within the next week. You would not think anything is going on around southwark or think we have one of the highest rates. Southwark park (Hawkstone Road end) is busy as soon as the sun comes out. No police presence at all.

There should be a rota for parks I n the face of this unprecedented Coronavirus crisis the government is rightly telling people to stay home to prevent the spread of the virus, to protect our NHS and to save lives.

However for many families in Camberwell and Peckham this is much harder than it is for others.

Camberwell and Peckham has, of all the constituencies in the country, the highest number of families living in council or housing association flats. It is really hard for parents with young children who live in small flats with no outside space.

During this lockdown here’s no nursery or play group and no chance to pop round to hang out with a group of friends. For these families it’s crucial to have the opportunity to spend one hour getting a breath of fresh air and for the children to be able to run around.

We have wonderful green spaces in Camberwell and Peckham, from big areas like Burgess Park and Peckham Rye to little gems like Camberwell Green and Lucas Gardens. But as it the weather gets hotter they’re getting more crowded. Our parks are a precious public asset. In this lockdown they need to be for those who need them most, local people

who don’t have gardens.

I’m suggesting that there should be a rota for our public green spaces. So that you would know that on a particular day your estate would have priority on a park.

What about advising those who live in houses with gardens not to use the parks? They can use their own gardens and walk on the streets.

And what about having a radical extension of road closures? There is so little traffic. Side roads could be closed except for access. That would take the pressure off the parks as people could walk in the street instead of crowding onto pavements. Its hard to keep two meters apart when you are wheeling your buggy on a narrow pavement. And a rota would reduce the danger of the few cars that are on the road speeding dangerously because of the lack of traffic. Let’s give the roads over to people walking and cycling.

Most people are abiding by the social distancing rules. The police are there to check up on those who don't. Let’s make this lockdown more bearable for children cooped up in flats by giving them the freedom of our parks and lets make out streets safer by giving children, not cars, priority in our streets.

Southwark Council leader’s dismay over education legal threat I am surprised and disappointed that anyone is thinking of suing any local authority for not providing learners with laptops at this time of crisis. Even if families don’t have internet access I understand that schools have prepared education packs for pupils. There is more to education than online learning.

Parents taught their children skills long before electronic methods were heard of. Local businesses may be able to help provide equipment but local authorities can’t provide internet access.

The pandemic has laid bare how crippled the care sector has become - our worst fears were confirmed

T

wo weeks ago we warned Coronavirus was in danger of spreading like wildfire throughout the care sector. We shared fears its hard working but underpaid staff were going into work unprotected and unprepared. Lives would be lost as a result.

Tragically, this prediction has now come true.

The pandemic has laid bare how crippled the care sector has become from lack of long-term government funding, patchy regulation, and with low-paid staff often denigrated as ‘unskilled’ despite doing one of the most skilled jobs of all.

It’s a fragmented sector, part public part private, with contract staff often moving between different settings. The overarching regulator, the Care Quality Commission, has been lambasted by Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman as unfit for purpose.

Meanwhile, staff shortages and reliance on agency workers to fill gaps continue and are only worsened by the pandemic. Although the majority of paid carers are incredible at what they do, their professionalism is now being scuppered by having to face a difficult choice: chance catching COVID-19 working without the right protective gear, or refuse and face an uncertain future.

When the government introduced the lockdown what counted as ‘essential’ work was unclear. Public transport still runs for key workers and, of course, no one can doubt that carers are essential.

But the fact that families, even self-isolating ones, are not allowed into a care home but workers using public transport can and may even lack the equipment they need, only shows the failings in the UK’s approach. There is a human cost to the lockdown: the routine health checks missed, the mental strain, and the loneliness it brings. To be unable to visit a very ill loved one in their final weeks is horrific.

Imagine the agony of making this sacrifice to keep your family member safe, but then finding out the government was unable to pay that debt and did not make sure the frontline professionals had everything they needed to do the same. This is something no family should ever endure. But it’s happening across the country.

What’s more, hospitals have been emptying out their non-urgent patients to care homes where possible, preparing beds for coronavirus patients, meaning that both care workers and care home inhabitants fear the virus being brought into their buildings.

For now MPs, including Southwark’s own, are working hard to to push the government to fix these problems before more people lose their lives to COVID-19 in deaths that could have been prevented.

Better testing, the right PPE when it is needed with clear guidelines for use, workers’ rights ensured, and a clear picture on the number of deaths are the immediate priority.

There will be more devastation, more anger, and - in the fullness of time - someone must be held responsible.

Care homes: lack of protective equipment, no routine tests and local death toll unclear

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Carers are struggling to get personal protective equipment (PPE) and testing is still not routinely available across Southwark, as it emerges the true number to die from COVID-19 is far higher than reported.

A government change of tack last week, which appeared to imply frontline health and social care workers were being wasteful with PPE and needed to treat it as a ‘precious’ resource - including reusing some items - has also dismayed Southwark MPs. A spokesperson for provider London

Care told the News that although it had finally received the 300 face masks initially promised by the government, it still had no indication of how many more items were coming and by when: “The mid to long-term outlook is therefore uncertain and we continue to have serious doubts that the overall supply nationwide will be sufficient to meet the continuing PPE requirements of the social care sector, including both home care and residential care."

The 300 masks were part of a blanket delivery to every provider in the country, regardless of the size of their operation. It has since emerged that the government did not include sheltered housing in their

calculations. Bermondsey MP Neil Coyle warned that every care home he had been in touch with had struggled with its PPE supply: “Care workers and other health professionals have raised the alarm about being expected to work without PPE or reusing it,” he said.

Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes, who co-chairs the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on adult social care, said care homes were still having to procure their own PPE but were beset by cancellations or sharp rises in cost. Some orders had also been diverted to the NHS and one organisation in her constituency had come very close to completely running out.

This week, the Office for National Statistics said that coronavirus was cited in one in five deaths for the week ending April 3 nationally.

For that same week, weekly recorded deaths in total was the highest it has been in England and Wales since records began fifteen years ago.

“The latest comparable data for deaths involving COVID-19 with a date of death up to 3 April, show there were 6,235 deaths in England and Wales,” said Nick Stipe, head of health analysis and life events at the ONS. “When looking at data for England, this is 15% higher than the NHS numbers as they include all mentions of COVID-19 on the death certificate, including suspected COVID-19, as well as deaths in the community.

“The 16,387 deaths that were registered in England and Wales during the week ending 3 April is the highest weekly total since we started compiling weekly deaths data in 2005.”

Of London based deaths, ONS statistics show that nearly half of them involved coronavirus.

Why, then, the discrepancy between figures logged by the Department of Health and Social Care and figures posted

by the ONS? The updates from the Department for Health and Social Care covers all deaths recorded in hospitals from coronavirus and deaths in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland wherever they occurred, if known to the authorities.

Statistics logged by the ONS are based on death certification in England and Wales, whether in or out of hospital, and where coronavirus is mentioned as suspected cause of death on the death certificate.

The value of the daily stats provided by the government is that they are available much sooner than the statistics which are collated using death certificates, which provides a truer picture but takes more time.

“The figures published on GOV.UK are valuable because they are available very quickly and give an indication of what is happening day by day,” says the ONS. “Their definition is also clear, so the limitations of the data can be understood.

“Numbers produced by the ONS take longer to prepare, because they have to be certified by a doctor, registered and processed.

“But once ready, they are the most accurate and complete information.”

Deaths in Southwark may have ‘trebled’ but figure of those lost to COVID is still not known

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Deaths in Southwark and Lambeth may have increased three-fold compared to a typical day last year amid the coronavirus crisis. Not all of these will have been as a direct result of Covid-19.

Statistics on coronavirus deaths by borough are hard to come by, with the official daily statistics being released by Downing Street only counting hospital deaths as a result of coronavirus nationally.

Locally, registrars in Southwark and Lambeth are recording a near three-fold increase in the number of cases they are recording compared to the same day last year, according to Southwark Council leader Peter John.

“On one day last week, Lambeth registrars dealt with 44 deaths,” he said.

“The same day the previous year they dealt with thirteen.

“On a similar day last week in Southwark, last year they registered four deaths. This year they have registered fifteen.

“In both cases it’s effectively a trebling of the numbers of the deaths that are being registered.”

Hayes has written to Health Secretary Matt Hancock, asking him to pledge that all care staff with symptoms who need to self-isolate are guaranteed full sick pay, but has so far received no response. The problems are only compounded by limited testing and a lack of clarity on the number of deaths within the care sector.

Routine testing is still not available in any Southwark homes. As the News has reported, Tower Bridge Care Home (pictured above) has had a spate of cases among residents and staff but, like many homes, has been asked to continue taking on new residents moved out of hospital.

This week HoC, which runs the home, said it had all the PPE it needed -

including gowns - and confirmed some of its residents had been tested for COVID-19: “We have taken some hospital admissions at Tower Bridge and we are closely following the government's guidance to make sure we do this safely,” a spokesperson said.

Anchor Hanover, another key provider in the borough, said it had ‘excellent’ support from Southwark Council in accessing PPE but also had been unable to test residents or staff.

Southwark Council leader Peter John said care homes across south-east London were not overwhelmed as they still had a sixteen per cent capacity at the beginning of week. The influx of hospital patients had not been as high as expected but other challenges remained: “There’s significant shortages of care staff across London because they are underpaid and overworked, doing some really difficult jobs,” he said. “And, on top of their usual care, they’re asked to protect people who might be going down with Covid. They are below the NHS in terms of supplies of PPE.” This week medical adviser Professor Chris Whitty said 13.5 per cent of care homes across the UK had reported an outbreak of COVID-19, with 92 homes within a 24-hour period affected. Although the government publishes hospital deaths daily, COVID-19 deaths in care homes or the wider community are reported weeks later meaning, at the time of going to press, the News only had figures up until April 3.

This shows that by that date a total of 217 people in England and Wales had died in care homes. Another 136 passed away in their own home, and 33 in hospices. But none of these deaths were included in the daily Coronavirus fatality figures. It is now believed daily death statistics could be under-reported by around 50 per cent.

Memorial service for victims of coronavirus planned by the council

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council is planning to hold a memorial service for the borough’s coronavirus victims once the pandemic is over.

Heartbreakingly, those who have lost their loved ones in Southwark have been unable to pay respects as they normally would, due to restrictions on funeral gatherings and socially distancing rules.

Statistics for the numbers of those who have tragically lost their lives in Southwark are not available.

Nationally, more than twelve thousand people are confirmed to have died as a result of Covid-19.

To honour the lives of those who have passed away before their time, an interfaith service at Southwark Cathedral is planned.

“Any loss of a loved one is tragic, but deaths at this extraordinary

time can be even harder to bear when many of the normal ways to express our grief and pay our respects are not available to us,” say town hall officials.

“We are working with our friends at Southwark Cathedral to plan an interfaith service to pay our respects to all those with a connection to Southwark who lose their lives due to COVID-19, once the country has come out of lockdown and returned to some sort of normality.”

The families, friends and colleagues of those who have died will be asked to join together at the ceremony to celebrate the lives of their loved ones.

“When the time is right we will ask their families, friends and colleagues to join us in a celebration of their lives and recognition of the difference they made in supporting our borough through this time,” the council adds.

Punishment For the Actor

Many people will know Paul Clayton from his TV work in Peep Show, Doctors, Hollyoaks, and for popping up in Holby City and the best of British drama, writes Michael Holland...

Born in Yorkshire and brought up in a mining village by adoptive parents, Paul enjoyed school and thrived there.

‘I started doing plays in infant school, which we rehearsed in the playground, and were a full-time part of my education,’ he recalls with pleasure.

Aged 11 he went to a very traditional grammar school who wanted him to go to Oxbridge, but he preferred drama school. He knew then that ‘acting came first and foremost’.

He says, ‘I can’t remember ever wanting to do anything else. At school when we were making career choices and teachers laughed at me because I wanted to be an actor, I did dally with the idea of journalism and law, but I was absolutely settled on going to drama school. My school gave up on me then.’

Paul was offered a place at RADA but turned down when he applied for a scholarship: ‘My parents couldn’t afford it, but with two A-levels I got a grant to go to Manchester Polytechnic School of Theatre. ‘That was lucky because ‘Manchester turned out to be a godsend as I went straight to the Royal Exchange Theatre after.’

Fortunately his parents were very supportive of his acting dreams: ‘What

I wanted to do was entirely out of their scope and understanding. Because they ran shops it was rare that they could get away together to see me in the theatre, so mum came to a lot of shows that I was in and I remember dad coming to see me in Nottingham in a Christmas show and bringing lots of underprivileged kids from the village… Even though I was dressed up playing the wicked Queen Brenda, he was very proud in a surly sort of Yorkshire miner way.’

There have been many highlights in Paul Clayton’s career: ‘Working with the Royal Shakespeare company for four years; joining the Casts of Peep Show and Him and Her; walking down Coronation street when I joined the cast, and watching the young actors I have mentored become successful.’

Achievements to make anyone proud.

Lowlights? ‘A nine month period of unemployment.’

But alongside a distinguished career Paul has has wrote for many years: ‘I’ve always loved to write and started writing for The Stage newspaper about eight years ago; I enjoy trying to be funny in 500 words… From that I was asked to write my first book about actors working in the corporate sector, and then wrote a guide for people coming into the profession as to how to survive as an actor: “The Working Actor” has been a success and lots of young actors have told me that it’s really helped them get a grasp on how

to cope with living the life of an actor, day after day, even if you’re not acting.’

Do you prefer writing to acting? ‘I do love acting but I get bored very quickly - I’m not sure I could do a long West End run. But I do love the moment when they say action and the adrenaline. I love thinking up stories, and working out what I can do to the characters, but it is rather lonely, so it’s best at the end of the day that I have somebody to tell what I’ve done.’

What books have you written? ‘Two acting books, but because I like crime and thrillers I was determined to write a novel. “The Punishment” is my first and, like the fear of a play’s opening night, when the book was published, knowing that people could just pick it up and read it was really quite frightening. I’m so thrilled the feedback has been good; it’s not a Booker Prize winner - It’s a real good page turner.’

The author claims the inspiration for The Punishment is ‘based on something that happened to me as a young actor, but which bits are true, well, I’d rather not say…’.

The Yorkshire lad has now been living in SE London for 40 years so is one of us, and with most TV and film productions cancelled for the unforeseeable future he will be using this extra time to make a start on his new book.

Mark Baxter is All About the Good Idea Mark Baxter has been wellknown in Camberwell for just about all his life and is often seen down the Walworth Road, popping in and out of shops and chatting to people on the street, writes Michael Holland...

His life now seems to have come full circle: after having started in the print he now has that industry running off copies of books he has written or been involved with.

‘Basically I write each and every day,’ he says in a friendly growl that, once heard, is never forgotten. ‘Be that social media work for various clients, PR and Marketing jobs, Blogs, treatments and script ideas for a film company I run, or developing book ideas.’ But Mark’s PR work has taken a big hit along with the entertainment and retail industries and, like everyone in those worlds, he has had to adapt as best he can.

How did you get in to PR? ‘I've always been a seller; I'm from a family of totters and I think selling is in my genes. Aged 10 I would go out with my grandad to the markets where he would buy and sell bits and pieces of furniture, bric-a-brac, etc - His mantra was 'make a pound into two'. So I did the same thing with records and clothes in my 20s, then a stall with my brother in the 80s where we sold clothes, furniture, paintings, photos, odds and sods and made a few bob.’

Philippa Mo is a classical violinist whose work is a mix of performance, recording, lecturing, teaching and researching for new projects, writes Michael Holland...

She has lived in Surrey Quays for half her life and is proud to call Rotherhithe her home.

How did you get into music? I started the violin when I was six, and I was very determined to stick at it. Although I clearly remember running off and climbing trees to escape practise on occasion, I sacrificed a lot to pursue my goal to play. I was lucky enough to have parents who supported me while many people tried to put me off the idea of music college and the profession and the financial uncertainty of such a career, but somehow I needed music with me and that has never changed. I won a place at the Royal Academy of Music and that was the chance to focus and excel.

What do you love about music? I love that music has always inspired me

What do you love about it? ‘I suppose getting something off the ground, be that a book, a band, a shoe, a jumper, a film,

a person, whatever… It’s great to see something develop into a 'must have'. To me, selling a pork chop, a car or a song are the same thing. Create a demand and then sell, sell, sell.’

What have been the highlights? ‘Two stick out in my mind. First is a book launch at the Paul Smith store when his PR wanted a few scooters lined up outside, and we managed that. Paul Smith came over to thank us, which was nice, and I thought I want more of this. Then the 'About The Young Idea' exhibition about The Jam. That was a lovely night with the Somerset House courtyard buzzing with punters.’

Lowlights? ‘It's when you do what you are asked to do and then they don't pay you. I've only had one job go completely bandy on me. Let’s just say I can be persuasive if I need to be and I have managed to get my wages, eventually, from all other jobs, no matter how long I had to wait for it. I do love a grudge, so I never forget those who have messed me about…’

How has Covid-19 impacted on your profession? ‘It's slaughtered it. All my regular monthly jobs have stopped, and now almost no wages coming in. My clients have stopped trading, so that’s that until it blows over.’

What do you plan to do to get through this crisis? 'Before the virus hit big time, I was about to launch my 14th book,

to keep learning. I practise harder now than I ever did and am more aware than ever how much work is still to be done.

There is always another wonderful piece to look forward to, more risk to take and more inner-self to challenge. The repertoire is endless - the number of exciting colleagues to collaborate with seems to grow and the players I already love working with inspire me more and more.

I love the connections music throws up with history, being part of a continuum of bringing new music to new audiences, playing the music of cutting edge composers for the very first time and breaking boundaries with experimentation.

Plus, I absolutely love my violin: its shape and colour and the sound - bright and bursting with vibrancy. It is my voice.

Plus, I love the travel music has enabled; last year I played in China, Brazil and Australia.

Highlights? My best memory was

playing in a Contemporary Music Festival in Mongolia and giving an outdoor concert in amongst the dunes of the Gobi Desert, as a group of nomadic horsemen rode in atop the dunes and silhouetted against the sky. I was transformed by that experience. I also played Schubert’s Ave Maria on a helipad under the Christ The Redeemer in Rio with the most perfect sunset and behind me a full moon rising over the Sugarloaf Mountain. Not in my wildest dreams would I have guessed I would ever visit these places let alone play there. I have also played in some of the great concert halls of the world, not to mention cathedrals and art galleries and quirky unique spaces too, all of which are etched on my memory.

Low points have been far and few between as I generally love the life, but the old-school cult of the teacher certainly took its toll too, so I try not to think of that much.

How have things changed with COVID-19?

The virus stopped all public events, and one by one my confirmed concert dates were cancelled. Each date takes a long time to set up and as well as already begun rehearsing I had made travel bookings too.

My teaching at Leeds College of Music moved online very swiftly, which was great, and I anticipate that when term ‘starts’ again I will be able to offer lessons to my younger students too.

Online teaching is very different in music. As teachers, we are dependent on hearing the tiniest details and slightest variations, and the fact I cannot trust the sound of the student coming through the phone/computer drives me mad. But we have been managing. It is nice to hold my group class and see everyone there with a bit of their home life in the background, have a quick chat to see how they all

are and then get on with some playing and try to make something a little more normal!

Online rehearsals are possible but nothing like being next to other players.

The biggest frustration is the time delay and the lack of synchronisation between movement and sound, plus we are all using different qualities of microphone to record and listen back.

Money is a huge worry… and as a freelancer it is almost definitely going to be catastrophic, and just how catastrophic may depend on how long the lockdown lasts for. I am worried about which dates I may be able to replace and which will be cancelled completely - worried for the venues I use and what their struggles will mean for hosting concerts too.

Your plan to get through the crisis?

I miss the drive of working towards the next performance, so in order to keep momentum I have made a kind of plan! I practise playing every day as usual and am trying to stay disciplined.

I have friends to play through scales each morning online, so we do our instrumental workout together and have a quick check up on each other, which I have welcomed.

I have my son with me and it has been wonderful to spend more time than usual with him. He is of course missing his friends and all the plans we had made for Easter - but he keeps really busy and now has a current and alarming determination to train me in sit-ups and pull-ups.

I have sorted out the flat too - so I can now say there is order in the usual frenetic chaos here.

I am running for exercise and in an hour can get to Tower Bridge and back, so that is keeping me connected with the area and, most especially, the river. I

Violinist Dreams of Getting On Her Bike For Post-Virus Road Trips

which is on my jazz hero Tubby Hayes. It is a limited edition 'art' book on the life behind the music and contains family photos, postcards from New York when he was playing there, passports, diaries, music awards, letters from his missus, photos of his clobber, etc… It's one for the connoisseurs. Anyway, the book launch I planned got cancelled and I had no option but to sell the book almost unseen - and quickly. My film partner Lee Cogswell made a short promo which helped, and I did a pre-order price just to get it out there and get some of my investment back. Tough times, but half have sold, so I'll have a few bob to keep me bobbing along. Not ideal, but in the great scheme of things I've just got to crack on.'

How different do you think life will be once we get back to normal? ‘I think this will be a reality check on all our lives. But hopefully we'll appreciate the freedom we once had a bit more and use it wisely going forward.’

Anything you’d like to add? ‘I just wish everyone all the best in the struggle to keep well in these trying times. Be sensible, stay in as much as you can and I hope you get back to 'normal' as soon as possible. Hands up who wants to get into a pub again? Thought so…’

have watched the spring more intently this year, the cherry blossom, the leaves beginning to come out, and the herons and Egyptian Geese taking up their positions on the piers.

I am calling friends a lot more than I usually have time for, I am reading more, I am baking more, and applying for jobs too. Fingers crossed something might materialise.

How different will your life be after? I am seriously concerned about my current teaching positions. I am not sure of recruitment success so far this year and I can only imagine the possible drop in numbers. I hope I will continue performing more concerts than ever and will anticipate fees dropping, but I want to share music as always, so shall do what I can to give my performances. I am willing to be creative and use whatever skills I have to stay employed in some way or other.

I can imagine I will be more frugal and I will try to stay healthy and strong and keep on playing music as well as I can and for as long as I can.

My boyfriend is up north, so miss him like mad, but I plan to spend plenty of time with him and loads of time on my motorbike - I have big road trip plans for when I can use it again. I want to do all the things we spoke about doing this spring and summer: I really want to go camping and swimming in the sea and exploring more walks.

And I want to see people active and comfortable to be near one another again. I cannot wait for the anxiety and stress and the suspicion levelled at others to stop. I cannot wait to see London and the rest of the country wake up again and start moving. I am not sure when that might happen but I am really hopeful that we are all going to come through this with sanity intact.

History

How our hospitals carried on saving lives, despite being bombed during The Blitz

The News looks back at an interview of a former nurse who remembers the Blitz Spirit that spurred on hospital workers Eighty years ago this September, Nazi bombs began raining down indiscriminately on London, flattening houses, factories - and even hospitals.

But while Guy’s and St Thomas’ suffered just as much devastation and tragedy as the city’s industrial and residential areas during the Blitz, workers at the two hospitals battled through and many had fond memories of the time.

Much like today, as the country faces the coronavirus pandemic and the hospitals are on the frontline of this disaster, here at the News we looked back through our archives to give you inspirational stories from our borough’s past.

In September 2015 we interviewed one 92-year-old former nurse, who remembered the chaos of the Blitz with “almost warm memories.”

Rosemary Hitchcock signed up when she was just sixteen to work at St Thomas’ after her brother was tragically killed in action in 1940. Staff braved “terrible conditions” to keep both hospitals open, working in special underground wards.

But despite these gloomy surroundings and sobering circumstances, the Devonborn pensioner spoke fondly of the comradery and comedy that prevailed through the famous Blitz spirit.

The pensioner recalled one occasion when she was caught on the surface during a raid with slap-stick reminiscence.

She said: “I remember being stuck above ground level, holding a jar of thermometers. If we broke a thermometer, we had to pay for it, so I

was being very careful.

“Then I heard a Doodlebug starting to doodle above me – when the noise stopped, you knew the bomb was about to come down. When the Doodlebug hit the other end of the hospital, two policemen in pyjamas helped me to protect my thermometers and made sure they didn’t crash to the ground.”

The close bond between the nurses and police was a constant during the war – with the older brother-style protective nature of local cabbies was also appreciated.

She said: “In my time off, I used to go off into London with my friend. Nurses in uniform were treated specially by the taxi drivers. The American servicemen tried to get into our taxis but the drivers were brilliant and refused to let them.

“Any police who needed hospital treatment were brought to us at St Thomas’. The police and the nurses were a great mix. If anything went wrong, or we needed help, oh boy, they were right there!”

Rosemary continued her life of action after the war, working for the Red Cross and helping Hungarian refugees cross by train to Austria and Germany. In the interview five years ago Rosemary’s daughter Rosamund, described her mother as “an inspiration.”

She said: “She lived all over the place, in Dusseldorf, Vienna, Belgrade and Paris.

She spoke so many languages and drove herself across the continent – in fact she only gave up driving two months ago!

“I’m constantly amazed by her memories, which even of the Blitz are

always positive. The way she talks about ‘doodlebuds doodling’ – it sounds so warm, but it was a bloody great bomb!

“But that’s just how she was. Even today she has a very naughty sense of humour. She is constantly saying ‘I’m a nurse, I’ve seen much worse!’ She’s very naughty.”

While both hospitals were heavily bombed from September 8 1940 onwards, thanks to the ingenuity and dedication of staff, no patients were killed during the war. Ten hospital staff and two firefighters, however, did fall victim to the Luftwaffe’s raids.

At a special memorial service held in 2015, Sir Hugh Taylor, Chairman of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The Blitz was a significant period in the history of Guy’s and St Thomas’, and the history of London. Staff at the hospitals did their best for their patients in terrible conditions, sometimes even sterilising their equipment on Primus stoves so that they could work in the converted basement wards when the hot water wasn’t running.

“The first bombs hit the hospitals on 8 and 9 September 1940. Now, 75 years on, we remember the doctors, nurses and physiotherapists who died at St Thomas’ during the Blitz.”

The lives of those lost will always be remembered but, thanks to people like Rosemary, so too will the enduring humour, spirit and comradery of London’s Blitz spirit. Nearly eighty years on our nurses are back at it bringing love, affection and lifting the spirits of those caught up in the COVID-19 outbreak.

CRAWFORD ROAD - NEW PEDESTRIAN CROSSING

(TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) 1.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable highway works to be carried out, it intends to make an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named road.

Whilst the works are in progress, or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no ` person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in: (a) Southampton Way, between Cottage Green and Parkhouse Street. (b) Bellenden Road, between Highshore Road and Peckham Road. (c) Rotherhithe Street, between No’s 225 – No’s 227 (d) Crystal Palace Road, at t’s junction with Whateley Road and also it’s junction with Underhill Road. (e) Crystal Palace Road, at both junctions with Goodrich Road.

The alternative route for affected traffic (2a) Southampton Way, New Church Road, Bowyer Place, Camberwell Road, Camberwell Green, Camberwell Church Street, Peckham Road.

(2b) Lyndhurst Way, Peckham Road. Peckham Road, Talfourd Road, Talfourd Place, Lyndhurst Way. Peckham Road, Clayton Road, Hanover Park, Rye Lane, Choumert Road, Alpha Street, Mcdermott Road, Choumert Grove, Choumert Road, Lyndhurst Way, Holly Grove. (2c) Salter Road (2d) Whateley Road, Lordship Lane, North Cross Road. Barry Road, Upland Road. (2e) Thompson Road, Landcroft Road, Jennings Road.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The works will be in operation for (2a) 14 May (2b) 7th – 9th May (2c) 7th – 8th May. (2d) & (2e) 4th – 5th May

The London Borough of Southwark (Parking places) (CPZ 'K') (No. *) Order 20** 1. Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that it proposes to make the above order under the powers of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

2. The effect of the order would be in CRAWFORD ROAD (CPZ 'K') the south-west side, to reduce by 18 metres in length an existing permit parking place o/s Whitham House to accommodate a new raised pedestrian zebra crossing outside Crawford Primary School.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES FURTHER NOTICE that it has approved under section 23 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the provision of a raised ‘zebra’ pedestrian crossing at the following location:- CRAWFORD ROAD, the centre of which would be located 52 metres south-east of the southeastern kerb-line of Valmar Road as measured from the north-eastern side.

Zig-zag markings, on which vehicles would be prohibited from stopping at all times would be laid on (i) the north-east side, 8 metres north-west of and 4 metres south-east of this crossing, and (ii) the southwest side 4 metres north-west of and 8 metres south-east of this crossing.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES FURTHER NOTICE under sections 90A to 90I of the Highways Act 1980 and in accordance with the provisions of the Highways (Traffic calming) Regulations 1999, propose to construct a speed table of flat-top construction having a maximum height of 100 millimetres and covering the entire width of the carriageway, at the following location:CRAWFORD ROAD extending from a point 3 metres south-east of the north-western wall of Whitham House south-eastward for a distance of 6.5 metres.

SAVER PERIOD EXTENDED

It was due to expire on Friday 10th April, but the club has lengthened the window during which fans can secure the best value for money on season tickets for the forseeable future. The decision has been made due to the ongoing situation surrounding COVID-19 and its impact on the lives and finances of supporters.

A spokesman for the club said: “Everyone at Millwall wishes to thank fans for their loyalty, support and understanding during what is a challenging time for us all. The club urges all stakeholders to continue to follow the latest government advice. If you are in a vulnerable situation and need assistance of any sort then please contact the club’s supporter liaison officer, Shona Groves, by email to slo@millwallplc.com.”

Millwall pay tribute to 45 goal former target man

Alf was diagnosed with dementia twelve years ago, and has been living in a specialist care facility for the last seven. Alf ’s wife and family have campaigned and fundraised tirelessly on behalf of Dementia UK since his diagnosis.

Alf signed from Shrewsbury Town in June 1972, playing 119 games for Millwall over three seasons, and found the net 45 times. In a nineteen year playing career he was also at Manchester City, Walsall, Shrewsbury Town, Hull City, Middlesbrough and Stafford Rangers.

He is survived by his wife Joan, two daughters, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. His daughters Karen and Samantha said: “We were and remain hugely proud of our wonderful

An Arsenal junior, and the son of London football legend Theo Foley, Paul joined the Fish from Welling United and was player of the year for the reserve team in 1990/1, which also saw him make his first team debut.
