MOVE TO CRITICAL SERVICES

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Council leader Peter John says the town hall will have to move to critical services only from next week amid the coronavirus pandemic.

He told the News this will mean a reduction from around two hundred council services to only twenty or thirty.

Those needed for the coronavirus response will continue, with the biggest change for council tenants being the lack of non-essential repairs being carried out.

“I hope residents understand why we have to do this,” he said, adding that he expected other London boroughs to soon make the move.

Local authorities across the country have raised concerns about a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) for frontline staff battling the coronavirus, including care workers.

safety as they carry out the vital job.

“I’m hoping that our PPE is sufficient at this time for our home care workers,” said Cllr John. He appealed: “Please, if any of our care workers are missing personal protective equipment that they need, please let us know so that we can action it.”

Cllr John said he was sickened by a report by this newspaper of a Camberwell church selling an oil which it claimed would protect from coronavirus.

“It’s nonsense and it’s dangerous,” he said. “Anyone making a profit on the back of this crisis should be ashamed, it’s unacceptable and you are not welcome in our borough.”

The council’s top boss said he was not aware of any reports of businesses in the borough making their employees work in unsafe ways amid the coronavirus, despite reports of instances happening across the country.

“I’m not aware of any such reports,” he said. “No employer should be hassling their employees to come into work if it’s not essential work at this time.”

While other services like weddings and christenings have been suspended for the time being, funerals are still allowed to take place.

However, just how these are arranged given government orders to stay at home and when out to ‘social distance’, is a challenge for all funeral directors.

Last week the News reported how the popular funeral home, with its head

office based on the outskirts of Southwark Park, had adapted given the crisis - even launching webcasts at services and the crematorium.

The first family to take up the service was that of 98-year-old Alice Woodgates from Blackfriars. Her service at Honor Oak Cremtorium was live-streamed to friends and family and after featuring in the News many more people, who had known the former choir singer, tuned in.

Alice’s daughter-in-law Carol told the paper afterwards: “I would recommend it to anyone. After the article went out people who we did not know, but had known Alice from say, bingo, got in touch and they watched it.

“Of course it was not just as we wanted it, but everyone who wanted to pay their respects could do by so watching it.”

Harriet Harman says at least 26 of her Camberwell and Peckham constituents are trying to get back to the UK including the GP who is ‘desperate’ to return to work.

Eight people from her constituency are in New Zealand with one, who suffers from MS, running out of medication. Others are stuck in countries including Peru and Morocco.

The first British people to return from Peru landed in London over the weekend, with 170 elderly and at risk travellers prioritised.

On Monday foreign secretary Dominic Raab announced the government was partnering with airlines including British Airways and Virgin Atlantic to charter flights for tens of thousands of people unable to get commercial flights back home. Seventy-five million has been set aside for the government-subsidised scheme.

For burials the use of the chapel is not permitted, so only graveside services are allowed and with only a limited number of family members. When attending a burial we politely advise people to respect the guidelines on social distancing, We must consider limiting attendees to members of the immediate family who are not in any of the high-risk categories and are not selfisolating.”

The immediate family are: Spouse/Partner; Parents/carers; Brothers/Sisters Children (and partners) But Simon said that while limiting attendees, it must be done sensitively and taking into account individual circumstances.

“For example,” he said, “if the deceased had few, if any immediate, relatives but a close friend wished to attend the service, that would be reasonable or in the case of the death of a grandparent, attendance by the grandchildren would be appropriate.”

Helen Hayes has called on the government to take the administration of the Windrush compensation scheme away from the Home Office, writes Katherine Johnston...

She told parliament that her constituents’ experiences with the scheme so far had been ‘poor’.

Many of the first Windrush passengers came to south London to work at King’s College Hospital.

Hayes said victims were still afraid to come forward: “People are simply fearful of the Home Office and its capacity to ruin lives”.

One woman, after being told she was not allowed to return to the UK, had all her worldly belongings repossessed by her private landlord. They have never been returned.

A damning report into the scandal was published last month by Wendy Williams, castigating the Home Office’s ‘ignorance and thoughtlessness’.

Williams did not brand the department institutionally racist, but did highlight a lack of understanding of racism, and Britain’s colonial history, among civil servants.

In response, home secretary Priti Patel issued an apology in the House of Commons, saying the government was ‘truly sorry’.

Sex predator is jailed for thirteen years He contacted the News when appeal was circulated, to plead innocence

Boy thrown from the Tate Modern can now sit up

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A predator who chased and repeatedly sexually assaulted a woman on the streets of Walworth and then tried to get the News to take down CCTV footage of him, has been jailed for thirteen years.

The little boy thrown from the Tate Modern last year can now use spoons and sit up properly.

William Gordon He insisted that he was the man in the photo, but that police had eliminated him from their enquiries. This was not the case.

On Monday police confirmed that the phone making these calls was directly linked to Gordon.

The appeal also revealed that the 34-year-old had followed another woman a week prior to his attack.

DI Sharon Steele called Gordon, who has previous for sex offences, ” a manipulative sexual predator who poses a serious danger to women.”

Overdose lessons learned by hospital staff agency

A taxpayer-owned staffing agency has admitted that lessons need to be learned after claims its staff may have misled a court about a man’s heroin overdose.

Concerns were raised about the evidence given by three employees of the NHS Professionals agency in court over the death of Alex Blake on June 24, 2018.

Mr Blake had died of a heroin overdose, with a jury finding inadequate observations at Lambeth Hospital, run by South London and Maudsley Trust, had contributed to his death.

A damning report released after his death stated there were discrepancies in the evidence given in court by nurses and a healthcare assistant about observations and the timing of when Mr Blake’s body was found.

“The evidence of these three witnesses cannot be said to be reliable,” said senior coroner Andrew Harris.

“The evidence of the two nurses would seem to go beyond that of poorly conducted observations.

“It would be reasonable to suspect

An investigation has been launched after a person was ‘electrocuted’ on the tracks of London Bridge station last Wednesday.

The British Transport Police say they were called to the SE1 station at 5.30am on Wednesday, March 25 to reports of an off-duty officer needing their assistance.

As they responded, a person went onto the tracks and suffered “serious injuries”, said the force.

These injuries were “believed to be consistent with electrocution.” Despite the efforts of paramedics, they were declared dead at the scene.

William Gordon, 34, convicted of beating and sexually assaut, approached his victim in a terrifying early morning attack in Larcom Street on August 6, 2019.

The Old Bailey heard how Gordon, of Elephant and Castle, followed his victim along Larcom Street as she walked in the direction of Charleston Street and sexually assaulted her for the first time.

The victim managed to get away – only for Gordon to chase her to nearby Cotham Street and sexually assault her again.

Jurors at the Old Bailey heard how his victim cried out and continued to escape the attack.

Her cries alerted people in nearby houses and Gordon fled the scene when they came out to help.

Incredibly, when police launched a CCTV appeal showing their suspect, Gordon brazenly contacted the News to insist we take down the appeal.

Man fatally electrocuted at London Bridge Station

that either the two nurses did not perform the observations at all, or that they have provided false evidence to the Trust and to the court.”

In a response to the coroner, released months behind schedule and only after multiple requests by the News, NHS Professionals said “there are lessons to be learned” particularly around sharing information with hospital Trusts.

The agency is wholly owned by the Department of Health, and provides temporary staff to hospitals across the country.

“I can confirm that the concerns raised were acted upon immediately and are currently the subject of ongoing investigations,” said its CEO, Nicola McQueen.

“I would therefore wish to assure all concerned that action will be taken to remedy any identified organisational or individual deficits arising from this process in the interests of patient safety.”

The nurses were referred to the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which regulates the profession, by the coroner last year.

In its latest update, the NMC said it could not comment on cases before they reached a public hearing stage.

“That night he was clearly targeting lone females before pursuing his victim through the streets and carrying out a sustained attack,” said DI Steele.

“Gordon then failed to acknowledge any wrongdoing and forced the victim and witnesses to relive the traumatic events of that night throughout the trial, during which he also disputed his previous convictions for sexual assault. However the jury saw through his lies and this dangerous offender has now been held to account.”

bravery during the ordeal, saying her courage had ensured Gordon was brought to justice. The DI added: “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the media and the public for all their help in identifying Gordon – it was due to their response to our appeal that he was so quickly arrested.”

He was sentenced for four counts of assault by penetration; one count of sexual assault and two counts of common assault by beating. He had previously been found guilty of the offences after a six-day trial in February.

In their latest update, his family thanked well-wishers and said their “little knight” is “slowly but surely continuing to progress.”

The six-year-old was attacked by Jonty Bravery, 18, who later confessed to attempted murder. He had allegedly told cops he did it so that he could be on TV. Bravery is awaiting sentencing.

Grosvenor estate quash eviction claims

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Fears of artists in Bermondsey’s Biscuit Factory being evicted during the coronavirus pandemic have been quashed by the company that leases the space.

The developer Grosvenor won a planning appeal earlier this year to go ahead with a massive £500m scheme at the former Peek Frean’s factory despite opposition from Southwark Council.

Businesses and studios in Block F were served an eviction notice last week, but a Grosvenor spokesperson said this was via a third party whom the space is rented to, Urban SS. One of those affected, Craig Jenkins, said: “Have just been given notice for my work studio, along with about 70 other creatives in the Biscuit Factory in Bermondsey, London owned by Grosvenor.

“How are we meant to vacate now?”

Dan Cohen, the managing director of Urban SS, told the News that it had been legally required to serve notice on the studios ahead of the

Mr Cohen said this would give artists and studios a place to store their things until the worst of the epidemic is over and it is safe to collect them.

A Grosvenor spokesperson confirmed to the News that Urban SS and its tenants could stay in place until August given the outbreak.

It also confirmed a pledge that Urban SS will not have to pay rent during the outbreak, with the expectation that these sub-tenants affected should also not have to pay rent.

“Since finding out about this we have been urgently contacting Urban SS to get them to rectify the issue and ensure that no one is asked to move out in the circumstances as they stand,” the spokesperson said.

According to Bishop Climate Ministries, part of the Kingdom Church on Camberwell Station Road, the product protects buyers from coronavirus.

The most effective way to avoid infection remains strict social distancing and washing your hands.

But a post on a ministry website claims: “It is by faith that you can be saved from the Coronavirus pandemic by covering yourself with the Divine Plague Protection Oil and wearing the Scarlet Yarn on your body.

“That is why I want to encourage you, if you haven’t done so already, to get your Divine Plague Protection Kit today!”

After being contacted by this paper, the authorities said they were investigating the church’s claims.

The post goes on to allege that the Lord has instructed the self-declared prophet of the ministry, Climate Irungu Wiseman, to make the “special oil.”

“As you use this oil, along with a special scarlet yarn, every coronavirus and any other deadly thing will pass over you,” states the post dated March 20.

A linked payment option advertises the oil and yarn for £91. The oil is supposedly made from cedarwood, hyssop and “prayer.”

In bold red capital letters, the post states: “Use the plague protection oil for protection from coronavirus.”

A following post also signed by Mr Wiseman, dated March 25, urges believers to pay up to £900 in “sacrificial seeds” amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The News alerts Trading Standards about ‘kit’ made of oil and red string It begins: “Is the coronavirus making you afraid? Are you afraid that you or your loved one might get sick?”

It links to a range of payment options, up to a whopping £910 for a “sacrificial seed of divine protection for [the] entire family.”

Some of this money can pay for a ‘fire request’ prayer. Followers are encouraged to write down their worries on a prayer request card, which is then burned during a live-streamed sermon.

Range workers say they are ‘scared’ at the Quays

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Staff at an SE16 chain say they are working in fear of the coronavirus, while thousands have signed a petition for the outlets to close nationally.

Workers at The Range in Surrey Quays say they don't feel they have adequate protection from the virus, and customers are purchasing nonessential items like mirrors and cushions.

Staff claim that all stores – owned by billionaire Chris Dawson - brought in a fridge and freezer to sell Iceland goods last week, so it could sell more food.

In a national statement The Range's CEO said it was staying open because it supplied essential goods like toilet roll and pet food.

"I’m very worried for me and everyone there," said one employee who did not wish to be named for fear of reprisal from their bosses.

"Customers don't respect the right distance, the company didn’t give masks or stuff to protect us.

"A week ago all the stores got one fridge and one freezer to sell groceries from Iceland. This has disgusted a lot of customers and colleagues from all over England."

The employee added that they were particularly scared that their colleagues were at risk, as some of the staff were over sixty-years-old.

"People go there to buy cushions, candles, mirrors," they said. "So not essential stuff."

“Despite orders for all of us to wash our hands regularly, toilets at the Surrey Quays premises are broken”, claimed another employee.

"The staff have to walk into the shop centre to use the toilet and wash their hands," they said. "The staff ones have been out of order for the last two years and never been repaired."

A petition has been sparked by The Range's decision to stay open amid the pandemic, with nearly 12,000 signatures at the time of writing.

It urges The Range to shut its shops and use the government's jobs retention scheme.

The Range "recently installed refrigerators in the store so it can be classed as a ‘mini mart’ and not have to close," claims the petition. "We have our actual supermarkets to supply us with food," it adds.

"We do not need The Range to stay open for the likes of a couple of packets of ham."

An email asking for evidence for the bold claims, including what “sacrificial seeds” entail, also was unanswered at

the time of writing.

The church is since reported to have said it has sold some 1000 kits, but claims the price only covers the cost.

Health guidance for coronavirus should be found from trusted sources, such as the government’s website, Southwark Council website, or the Department of Health.

“Firstly, we are shocked that Unite has ‘pinpointed’ London Early Years Foundation (LEYF) as an ‘organisation flouting government policy’ before checking the factual accuracy of its misleading statement,” said a spokesman.

“London Early Years Foundation is following Government guidance and doing all we can to ensure we can pay all of staff in our nurseries and central office.

“The teamwork at LEYF has been exceptional and we are working hard to ensure the organisation survives the coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis.

“We value our staff and recognise that we have a duty of care to our employees at this difficult time.”

LYEF called itself “the capital’s fourth emergency service,” and said many of its staff were “offering to put themselves at risk of infection because they want to help our NHS.”

Union accuses nursery firm of ‘mistreating’ staff josh@southwarknews.co.uk A union has accused a nursery firm operating four establishments in Southwark of ‘mistreating’ its workers over the coronavirus pandemic.

The chain's closest competitors, such as B&M and Wilko's also remain open for similar reasons.

The News phoned the Surrey Quays branch for further comment, but was told: "The store manager won't comment to reporters. All comments have to go through head office."

The Unite union said London Early Years Foundation had not waited for details of the chancellor’s jobs retention scheme before cutting staff hours and reducing sick pay.

It claimed staff at LYEF were told to accept reduced hours each week, cuts to holiday entitlement and a reduction in sick pay to statutory minimum by April 1 – or be sacked.

But the organisation – which runs South Bermondsey, Bird in Bush, Camberwell Grove and Burgess Park nurseries – said it was shocked by the union’s claims, slamming them as misleading and inaccurate.

Only thirteen of its 33 nurseries across the capital are now operating at minium occupancy for children of key workers.

Among them are Bird in Bush nursery on the Old Kent Road.

Unite reigonal officer, Onay Kasab, said the nursery organisation had “behaved appallingly to their workforce at a time of national emergency.”

Southwark police have not yet needed to issue fines for social distancing breaches - despite receiving numerous calls about coronavirus from the public.

Officers say they have received a “high number” of calls about alleged breaches of the two metres social distancing instruction.

Among them are arresting three youths on the Dickens Estate in Bermondsey for possession of an offensive weapon after it was reported that they were “breaching the Boris Johnson rule.”

A possible house party on Barry Road, East Dulwich was also closed down by cops.

But Inspector Owen Pyle (pictured) told this paper that bobbies had not yet needed to issue the new £60 fines to ensure the rules were followed.

Speaking to the News at the end of last week, he said: “In Southwark we’ve not actually needed to issue any fines as yet.

“We don’t want to enforce it unless we really have to. In the most part, it has been a simple case of ‘go home’

and so far everyone has engaged with it.

“I think most people understand the severity of the situation, and that helps.

“It will depend on the length of the lockdown. The longer it goes on for the more people will get fed up of sitting indoors so then we will need to look at more enforcement.”

One side effect of the deserted streets is that crime could now drop, said Inspector Pyle.

“There’s very few people on the streets, I would anticipate street crime to drop,” he said. There’s more people sitting at home to report it.

But those are just my thoughts.”

He added that with fewer people around, it made it easier to spot those who should not be out. “In fact, it’s made it a bit easier for us to spot those loitering around,” he said.

“They’re going to be spoken to, because they stand out even more than normal.”

Asked by the News about cops needing to get up close and personal with suspects to arrest them, Inspector Pyle said it was a matter of bobbies following their common sense.

Two council workers die of virus

The town hall said it was a tragic reminder that none of us are safe from Covid-19, and that we all need to follow strict social distancing rules.

Leader of the council, Cllr Peter John, said the council had been in contact with the deceased families and would be providing support to staff at this difficult time.

He said: “Sadly the large number of tragic deaths that are expected nationally from COVID-19 means that all of us will know someone who has

been touched by tragedy and loss by the time this is over.

“In Southwark we were devastated this week to learn that two colleagues have lost their lives to COVID-19.

We are in touch with their families and are supporting staff at this difficult time.

“This is a tragic reminder that none of us is safe from this virus, and we must all do everything we can to prevent its spread by staying at home and away from other people.”

Southwark remains one of the worstaffected areas in the country, with 415 confirmed cases at the time of writing.

Testing remains focussed on those with the severest symptoms in hospitals, so the real figure is likely to be much higher.

Care workers tell the News how they are struggling to cope

Nationally, Coronavirus is putting more pressure on an industry struggling with rising demand, cashstrapped councils, and staff shortages.

In last Thursday's paper, we looked at how Southwark care homes and workers were coping with the situation and rising to the challenge of keeping families connected with their loved ones during lockdowns.

One of the workers to contact us after

reading the article, who works 'in and around SE16', described life on the frontline.

"I love my job but since Coronavirus I'm finding myself between a rock and a hard place," said the London Care employee.

"To be able to carry on working I'm having to leave my ten-year-old son who has asthma with his grandparents who also have health issues. The icing on the cake is that we can't get food to feed our families.

"I no longer use the bus. I'm too scared, so I'm using a bicycle. The amount of people in the parks is terrible. I would give anything to isolate and keep my family safe."

A thirteen-year-old boy from Brixton died in isolation in King’s College Hospital this week, becoming the UK’s youngest Coronavirus victim.

He added that in many respects police were operating “business as usual” with contingency plans in place should the level of staffing drop dramatically.

The teenager, named as Ismail Mohammed Abdulwahab, is believed to have had no pre-existing health conditions. His family were unable to be by his side due to restrictions on hospital visits due to the risk of infection.

Ismail was described as “a bubble of life that you would meet and smile, falling in love immediately. His love was pure and everyone around him loved him.”

He was the younger brother of a teacher at Ferndale Road’s Madinah College, which teaches Arabic and Islamic studies. The family had

already suffered the loss of their father, who passed away from cancer.

A fundraising appeal to cover the cost of his funeral, and support his family, aimed to raise £4,000 but has now had more than 3,000 people donate. By Wednesday morning, the total stood at more than £55,000.

In a message to all those who donated, the family said they were “overwhelmed and grateful to all the donors and prayers.”

The News understands Ismail was on a ventilator but deteriorated and was put into an induced coma.

King’s College Hospital said in a statement: "Sadly, a 13-year-old boy who tested positive for COVID-19 has passed away, and our thoughts and condolences are with the family at this time.

"The death has been referred to the coroner and no further comment will be made."

Join ‘hospital heroes’

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk An emergency appeal set up at King’s is paying for toiletries, groceries, transport and hotel stays for staff working day and night to save patients with COVID-19.

The ‘Hospital Heroes’ funds have already paid for new well-being hubs where workers can take a break and change out of their heavy protective wear in both Denmark Hill and the trust’s Princess Royal site.

It is now providing ‘care packages’ including snacks, phone chargers, toiletries, sanitary items, and shaving kits for men who need to be clean shaven to wear protective masks - sometimes having to shave part way through long shifts.

Money raised will buy groceries for staff so they don’t have to queue in supermarkets after long shifts, and for COVID-19 patients as they are being discharged from hospital so they have food at home.

And transport costs at all hours of the day are being covered too, on top of hotel and BnB stays, so staff can spend more time with patients without long commutes. A psychologist has also been drafted in to support staff in emergency and critical care.

The hospital has also had goods donated from companies including the Body Shop and food delivered from restaurants and shops across Southwark and Lambeth.

To keep staff’s spirits up, messages of support from donors have been shared

across the hospital on posters, TV screens and in wall art.

One reads: “Every single action you do is having an incredible effect on us.

You’re amazing. Thank you. We think of you, worry for, believe in you and support you. You ninja warrior heroes.

We love and thank you.”

Set up by King’s College Hospital Charity, the fundraiser comes at a dark time for the NHS, as the government warns the next two weeks will be critical in its attempt to ‘flatten the curve’. More than 9,000 people are being treated in hospitals for the virus, with the majority in London.

This week, the first NHS Nightingale Hospital was completed in Woolwich’s ExCel centre, aiming to ease the burden on existing critical care units. At the time of writing, Lambeth and Southwark had

the fourth and fifth highest number of cases, with 418 and 415 respectively.

The daily UK death toll reached 381 on Tuesday, with 1,789 lost to the virus since the outbreak began. As of March 31, 39 patients had died at King’s and 23 at Guy’s and St Thomas’.

Louie Louie, a cafe and bar in Walworth Road, has raised nearly £4,000 so its kitchen can make, donate and deliver food to locals in need.

For every £5 given, a meal will be made for someone who needs it the most including those in quarantine, elderly, pregnant or those financially struggling - including families who depend on free school meals.

The cafe, which isn’t making any profit from the scheme, is distributing its food via the North Walworth Mutual Aid group.

Rachel Rumbol, a chef and the fundraiser’s organiser, said raising so much cash in just three days had left the team ‘blown away’ by

Bermondsey: Community Kitchen makes meals for the elderly The Bermondsey community has rallied together to provide more than four hundred nutritious meals for OAPs in the local area.

The joint effort between Bermondsey Community Kitchen, based in the Blue, Southwark Irish Pensioners and Engie saw a whopping 400 bangers ‘n’ mash made for isolating elderly people.

South Bermondsey ward councillor, Leo Pollak, praised the effort: “Our incredible community is pulling together. I’m sure we’ll come out of this crisis a stronger and kinder society,” he said.

The meals even had one person asking: “Do you do deliveries north of the river?” Another added: “That’s amazing - what a great thing to do.”

Gym members donate to appeal Everyone Active gym members have raised £100,000 for the National Emergencies Trust Coronavirus appeal by donating 50 per cent of their gym fees during the lockdown.

Although all eight Southwark gyms are now closed, the company is also offering a suite of online material so people can continue working out from home for a reduced cost of £9.99. Meanwhile Elephant and Castle landlord Delancey pledged to keep its food shops and pharmacies open ‘for as long as statutory authorities permit us to’. It has also waived rent and service charge for traders until July when the centre is planned to finally close.

Camberwell: Buy NHS workers a meal at this cafe

Nunhead Knocks, a Coronavirus community group formed by the Nunhead Rocks facebook group founders, says in its first ten days of operation it had over 80 requests for help and 77 calls to its dedicated COVID-19 hotline.

The group, which is covering the Peckham Rye and Queen’s Road areas too, has helped people without electricity and unable to cook, matched locals with dementia keyworkers and helped an oncologist find a car so he could get to work to treat his patients when the nearest tube station closed. More than 100 people have signed up as volunteers. East Dulwich: Community Raffle set up to support traders Set up by resident Victoria Rennison, online tickets are just £1, with proceeds used to buy prizes from shops, restaurants, gyms, cafes and independent businesses.

A new prize is being added to the haul with every 50 tickets sold. In total, there are 10,000 tickets up for grabs until Easter.

A fundraiser from the Beyond Food foundation which runs the restaurant on Tooley Street to support this work has so far raised more than £7,000 of a £50,000 total.

“The individuals we work with are often already isolated from their communities and have a wide range of complex support needs,” it pledges.

“We will maintain a line of contact with those in need through phone and email communications, and commit to responding within two hours to all requests.”

Dulwich College’s design and technology department has donated its supply of protective goggles to West Dulwich’s Old Dairy Health Centre. GP Dr Rosemary Leonard said more were on their way courtesy of the school’s 3D printer, and urged any other wellequipped schools to follow suit.

Other establishments to donate goggles from their science and technology and design departments include Nunhead’s St Thomas the Apostle school which has donated to King’s College Hospital and Lewisham Hospital, and Harris Academy in Peckham, which sent 170 pairs to Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.

And, a Herne Hill councillor is one of those on the frontline. Lambeth councillor Pauline George is working 13-hour intensive care unit shifts.

After the crisis is over don’t return to the old habits

T

he COVID-19 crisis is brutally reminding us that we are interdependent, part of same living world as animals, insects, bacteria and viruses.

The response to the crisis touches every part of daily life, making us see the hidden harm caused by ‘business as usual’.

Staying in hits some harder than others. Some can enjoy the sunshine and spring blossom in their own garden; others have no outside space. Among the worst off are families in over-crowded council homes, and renters in insecure flat- or house-shares. The problems of damp, lack of privacy and study space for children, and resulting mental and physical illnesses were desperate even before this added pressure. Health and good housing go hand in hand, as the founders of the NHS knew.

In ‘normal’ times, 9,500 Londoners a year die early from air pollution, while many thousands more suffer from chronic illnesses like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). As planes are grounded and cars parked, the air is cleaner than it has been for decades. Ideas that cut transport pollution, like working from home or shorter weeks, have been around for a long time; in recent days we have learned just how quickly practices can change.

We are lucky in many parts of Southwark to have shopping streets with bakers, grocers and pharmacies.

While ‘just-in-time’ supermarkets with carparks have been stripped, local shops are keeping going, with people buying only what they can carry on foot or bike.

The small scale makes it easier to feel part of a community – something also seen in the amazing mushrooming of mutual aid groups, street by street.

What we do now affects our families, our neighbours, and people in every country of the world. We all depend on the people who work directly to support life – food growers, shopkeepers, carers, cleaners, nurses, doctors, refuse-collectors. And every time we break the chain of infection – by staying home, by keeping a safe distance – we act to protect each other.

When this crisis is over, we must not return to the old habits that were killing us. Only by taking care of the wider world, from rainforests to stagbeetles, oceans to wildflower meadows - the whole glorious kaleidoscope of life - can we hope to make our own lives more secure.

More needs to be done during lockdown

T

he rate at which our lives have been changed by the coronavirus pandemic is extraordinary and we all have a duty to respond responsibly, as most local people have, and in line with the national interest.

Parliament is closed until at least 21st April and could quite possibly stay shut beyond that. I think Westminster needs modernising to allow questions to be tabled in writing even when Parliament is not sitting, after all, we have Ministers, civil servants and a Government and scrutiny is even more crucial in a national emergency when extraordinary powers are being used to curtail liberty.

For the foreseeable future even more of my work will be done this side of the river here in Southwark, trying to support the most vulnerable in our community who have been hit hardest in this crisis. The food bank I run locally has never been busier sadly, nor have the other local food banks and organisations supporting the less well-off in our community.

As a measure of the global reach of our community, I have also had to try and help local people stranded abroad as other countries have shut their borders. I’ve helped people back to Southwark from Morocco and Peru and am trying to help someone get back from New Zealand. The government has not resourced our embassies sufficiently to manage in this crisis sadly.

I also know from the worried calls and emails I have received that the crisis is having a devastating impact on our economy and local businesses. The government was right help people retain work by paying 80 per cent of their wages if they can no longer work as a result of the virus and to offer some loans to help employers manage this tough period. Support for self-employed people is delayed but is crucial for the construction and hospitality industry locally.

The government must act more

swiftly to help and must better define who should not be working now; too many employers are still requiring staff to come in including estate agents, accountants, painters, beauticians and more. I hope an inquiry later in the year will result in penalties and potentially even custodial sentences. It is simply not right to risk someone else’s life, endanger the wider community and potentially put greater pressure on our NHS. The crisis has also exposed further the complete failure that is Universal Credit. Too many people have been laid off and half a million applied for Universal Credit which has a minimum waiting time of five weeks before a payment can be received.

DWP is letting people down at this most critical time of need and the benefit system must be overhauled when we are through the crisis.

Thankfully, there are some positives shining through in this dark moment. All the people who clapped the NHS last week.

All the extra donations to food banks and other local charities helping vulnerable people.

Bermondsey Community Kitchen getting hot meals out. Time and Talents befriending isolated older people. The Leathermarket JMB delivering chickens to local families.

Pembroke House setting up a food and medicine distribution hub.

Neighbours shopping and delivering for each other. We live in a truly remarkable community which is, if anything, revealing its strength right now. Adversity can bring the best out in people and we will emerge stronger from this crisis. Dual crossword The existing community groups shine through

W

e are all in this together, and it is only by pulling together and supporting one another that we will get through this and - just maybe - come out a stronger community than before.

One cliche the pandemic will hopefully bury once and for all is the often completely wrong idea that Londoners don’t talk to the people next door and that neighbourliness is a thing of the past.

The most successful community groups responding to this crisis are being led by local figureheads who already have experience mobilising volunteers. Many have been supporting OAPs, young families, and people in other ‘at risk’ groups for a long time before anyone had heard of a new disease called Coronavirus.

Under the surface there has always been a vast array of fantastic work going on in Southwark. Much of it is unpaid, and in anti-social hours after work. Having more people inspired to join this effort in this time of crisis is a positive outcome.

But there is also expertise and knowledge about how to work safely - and following the right guidelines with money, data protection, and vulnerable groups - that is needed. There will be well-meaning people who want to help, but really need a professional social worker or carer to step in.

We’d like to see a ‘verified by the council’ scheme for Mutual Aid groups and other initiatives. Having this status would mean people can have the utmost confidence in organisations that are doing vital work. It could also ensure that people with extra caring skills or financial oversight were more able to offer this help.

It’s only going to get harder in the coming weeks. One in three TfL workers are off sick or self isolating.

Schools were struggling to stay open before the government announced full closures - except for keyworker children - because of absences.

We can only assume that volunteer groups will also see people unable to make deliveries or help residents with their day-to-day errands if they too are falling ill or being quarantined. On Tuesday, King’s confirmed the youngest victim of the disease, a boy just thirteen, had died.

In a world where live performance has all but disappeared for the moment, Robin Ince and those clever people at The Cosmic Shambles Network have come up with an ingenious plan to banish our housebound boredom and keep us all entertained, writes Michael Holland...

They’ve been in touch with some of our best-loved performers and household name scientists and they are very pleased to announce that you will be able to go online to watch your favourite entertainers live via the internet.

Each show will be free to watch but with a pay what you can option with any profits going to help performers and venues that are in the most need in these difficult times.

Robin Ince says, ‘It is stating the obvious to say that strange days have got a hell of a lot stranger with many people facing confusion and anxiety. Artists have nowhere to play and audiences have nowhere to go to be distracted. Trent Burton, Cosmic Shambles Network producer is a bit of a technical whizz, so he has managed to work out a way that we can do shows from our home and people can watch them in theirs as they wipe their brows in their toilet paper castles.

Tate have released an exclusive online-only performance by Faustin Linyekula, one of many ways people can still access art through Tate’s digital channels.

The Congolese choreographer and dance artist was due to perform in the Tanks at Tate Modern from 20 to 29 March 2020. His work was among those programmed for this year’s BMW Tate Live Exhibition: Our Bodies, Our Archives, alongside other performances by Okwui Okpokwasili and Tanya Lukin Linklater.

These were cancelled when Tate’s four sites closed due to the coronavirus, but Linyekula and those of his collaborators who could make it to London in the circumstances worked with Tate to stage a one-off, site-specific work, performed to camera in the empty Tanks. Now available to watch on tate.org.uk for free, My Body, My Archive is a performance re-invented for the particular sit-uation of this exhibition and its closure to the public.

Billy B’day: All the web’s a stage

Theatre Together, a new collective of over 50 artists and professionals, have announced All the Web’s a Stage an online event featuring a variety of live performances to raise money for those in the arts facing hardship as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, writes Michael Holland...

The event takes place on Shakespeare Day, 23 April, a date marked to celebrate the Bard and the performing arts.

The event will feature a curated programme across a variety of live performance disciplines such as cabaret, comedy, dance and theatre. Those taking part include Danny Mac, Tom Milner, Jodie Prenger and La Voix. Further participants and programme details to be announced.

Performances will be streamed live throughout the day on Thursday 23 April. Audiences will be able to watch for free, with the opportunity to donate to those in the performing arts in need.

Further details on streaming platforms and the charities being supported will be announced shortly.

Danny Mac told the News “At this moment of worldwide crisis, many of our colleagues in the arts are facing severe hardships as their jobs literally disappear.

It’s so important the industry comes together to support each other, and this feels such a fitting way to raise money for those in need and allow audiences to continue enjoying live performance.”

Paul Virides, co-producer of All the Web’s a Stage, added, “Our world faces unprecedented times, and we in the arts are facing huge challenges, with the CIF indicating today that 47% of freelancers in the arts have lost 100% of their booked gigs. Across the UK artists have been coming up with ingenious ways to stay traces de Dinozord 2006, Statue of Loss 2014, Batanaba 2017 and Congo 2019.

In this autobiographical performance, Linyekula questions ancient knowledge stored in the body against the relatively short written history found in books.

Companions – a number of his fellow dancers, ac-tors and musicians accompany him in this journey, helping him to tell stories and reactivate collective and personal memories. Linyekula imagines his own artistic journey in terms of the circle and asserts that archives of the body cannot be experienced alone. In the current climate, his work, which explores themes of connection, community and fragility of the body, has added poignancy and resonance.

While Tate galleries remain closed, visitors can still experience great art on Tate’s website and social media. A booklet, including newly commissioned interviews with Linyekula, Okwokpasili and Lukin Linklater, can be downloaded from the BMW Tate Live Exhibition web page. Other content on tate.org.

History Whole books have been written about the dock strike of 1889, but seventeen years earlier casual workers facing a massive pay cut formed the first docker’s union and bravely took industrial action to put change in motion for the poorest workers.

As workers across the nation struggle to see how we get through the coronavirus crisis, keep their jobs and face pay cuts despite the huge amount of money the goverment have promised we looked into historical archives to tell you the story of these early dockers.

In the early 1800s Surrey Commercial Docks, like many others, was staffed mainly by casual workers – with just enough men taken on each day for the available work. With ten men lining up for each job, no worker was in any position to strike. But in 1871, the East & West India Dock Co. announced a pay cut of around 25 percent, to try to rescue their falling profits.

One docker, a Mr Caulfield, organised a meeting but concluded nothing could be done. “These men are comparatively helpless in the matter,” wrote the Eastern Post. “They are so poor that a strike or even a combination with a view of joint action is not to be thought of. They can only appeal to the companies to reconsider the whole question, and ask the public to sustain their appeal.”

After two further meetings, the Labour Protection League (LPL) was established, with Caulfield as Secretary. The sole purpose of the League was to oppose the reduction in dockers’ wages, but Caulfield saw an opportunity to line his own pockets and ran off with the organisation’s meager funds. Despite this set back the dockers persevered and by 1872, the LPL had branches in Southwark, Wapping, Horsleydown and Greenwich.

By October the membership was 30,000-strong, of which 18,000 were working on the South bank docks.

They began a series of strikes in June of 1872, winning a penny or so a day on daily rates as low as three or four pence an hour.

The cuts imposed by the big player the East & West India Dock Co - were rescinded but it would not budge on a minimum wage and the much disliked system used to obtain and pay the casual workers for the ship yards.

Particularly in the timber trade, the hiring was done by “contractors”, usually dockside publicans, who had an agreement to supply willing men as needed to work in the shipyards.

This suited the shipping companies because they never knew exactly when ships would dock, so for a one-off fee they had casual labour on tap.

But for the ‘lumpers’ who unloaded the cargo of heavy timber from the ship’s hold, it was beer they had on tap. With many lumpers contracted out by the same pub landlords who served them ale all night long –their wages often went straight back behind the bar.

In 1851 Henry Mayhew, author of ‘London Labour and the London Poor’ (1840) interviewed a lumper who gave a reluctant account of his role.

He wrote: “The lumpers…are so besotted with the drink which they are tempted to obtain from the publicans who employ them, as to look upon the man who tricks them out of their earnings rather as a friend than as an enemy.”

discharged by his contractor, to get a reliable account from him.

“He was evidently in fear of losing his work; and the tavern to which I had gone to take his statement was filled with foremen watching and intimidating him.

He said: “I am a working lumper, or labourer at discharging timber or dealships. I have been sixteen years at work.

I should think that there are more than 200 men ….who are constantly engaged at the work…..In summer a great many Irish labourers seek for work as lumpers.

They come over from Ireland in the cork boats. I should say there are altogether upward of 500 regular working lumpers, but in the summer there are at least 200 more.””

Thankfully there was plenty of work to go around from July to January, but between January and July, the lumpers had very little to do, when they would try to get whatever work they could to

keep them going. In the summer time, the working day for a lumper was 6am to 6pm and from daylight to dark in the winter. The lumpers worked in gangs under foremen who were sometimes the publicans who contracted the workers.

“We are usually paid at 7 o’clock in the evening,” the anonymous lumper told Mayhew.

“I have been paid as late as 3 o’clock on Sunday morning….and I was all that time in the public house. We go straight to the public house after we have done our work.”

The 1872 strike was the beginning of trade union protection for the poorest dock workers like the lumpers, leading to companies employing more permanent staff and setting the stage for the biggest dock strike in history seventeen years later in 1889.

Non-league vents fury at FA

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FISHER HAVE said they “respect the decision” the football authorities have taken to end the SCEFL season – but a number of non-league clubs have written to the FA to express their “profound concern”.

The FA last week took the decision to immediately void the leagues from Steps 3-7 of the football pyramid and expunge all results.

That meant an end to their campaigns for Fisher, Peckhams Town and Rye, and for women’s sides Millwall Lionesses and Dulwich Hamlet.

It is a decision that has been questioned

by Millwall manager Gary Rowett, and

by Gary Neville, the former Manchester United and England defender who is part-owner of Salford, a club that came up through those steps in the English football pyramid and are currently in the National League.

Earlier this week, the National League announced it was suspending their leagues “indefinitely”, but they are in discussions with authorities and legal experts to try to find a way to conclude the campaigns. That leaves Dulwich Hamlet’s men’s side, in National League South, still in limbo.

More than 60 clubs have written to the governing body of football in England

to express their dissatisfaction at how quickly the decision was made, what they feel was a lack of thorough consultation, and urged them to reconsider.

Fisher told the News this week they hadn’t been approached about the letter.

But they commented: “We appreciate the extremely difficult position in which the FA and league found itself. We respect the decision the league has reached and look forward to starting the new season when that is possible.

“In the meantime, football is very obviously of secondary importance to the health and wellbeing of the public, and Fisher FC hopes that its players, staff, supporters and all in the wider Bermondsey and Rotherhithe communities are staying safe and well in these difficult times.”

On Monday, the Non-League Paper published a letter sent to the FA by clubs from across the Step 3-7 system, including from women’s leagues, signed by official club representatives.

“We are writing to express our profound concern and displeasure regarding the decision to null and void entirely the 201920 playing season from Steps 3 to 6 of the non-league, as well as tiers three to seven of the women’s non-league,” the letter said.

“Our concern is grounded primarily in the needless and inexplicable haste exercised in reaching the decision, coupled with a total lack of substantive dialogue

or consultation with affected clubs. The decision also disregards the millions of pounds invested and countless hours expended collectively by clubs, and so has critical financial implications.

“In writing this joint letter, we recognise that the decision to expunge results for the 2019-20 season still pends official ratification from the FA Council. However, we believe it is unacceptable that such a decision has been handed down to us in this manner. We urgently seek constructive dialogue with the FA with the aim to have the decision re-considered.

“Before continuing, it is crucial that we extend our appreciation to all governing bodies, leagues and respective chairpersons for their continued hard work at a time of such adversity. We are markedly conscious of the seriousness of the public health situation, which undoubtedly takes precedence over football.

“Consequently, all clubs agree with the decision that the current playing season should be indefinitely discontinued until it is safe to resume; it would be both irresponsible and reckless to consider resuming playing football at this time. We would like to take the opportunity to echo government advice for everyone to stay home to protect the NHS, and thus save lives.”

The signatories dispute that, according to the FA, there was “consensus” among clubs from Steps 3-6 to void the season.

The letter states: “No such consensus was ever reached amongst the NLS (National League System) Steps 3-6 – some leagues were barely consulted.

“Many clubs were never given an opportunity to vote, only to suggest possible conclusions to league officials.

There appears to have been little-to-no attempt to consult deeply and widely and so formulate a clearer idea of what any ‘consensus’ amongst clubs might be.”

The letter highlighted the confusion over relegation and promotion. The FA said

there will be no promotion from Step 3 (including the Isthmian League Premier Division) to Step 2 (National Leagues North and South). Dulwich Hamlet were promoted from Step 3 to Step 2 in 2018.

The clubs also stressed their financial concerns.

The letter continued: “Voiding the season has immense financial implications on clubs, their sponsors and local communities. Why did the FA, in reaching its decision, not discuss the huge financial impact during their ‘consultation’ process? Are clubs expected to foot the bill for playing a season of ‘friendlies’?

“Whilst we are deeply dissatisfied with the manner in which the decision has been reached and delivered, it is imperative to consider the ramifications of the decision itself on clubs, from a footballing, financial and community perspective.

“Most clubs in Steps 3-6 have now completed 70-80 per cent of their league fixtures, and it is incomprehensible that these results should be delegitimised and expunged on the basis that the final quarter of the season cannot be fulfilled in the future. Simply put, there is no valid basis to expunge an entire season, especially at this stage.

“Our demand for the FA to reconsider its decision is also about sending a message

to the fans of our clubs, who have spent hard-earned money to follow their teams up and down the country, letting them know their support was not in vain. We know it is well within the powers of the FA to ensure that this is the case.

“The consensus that we have reached is to take a similar stance to what the Premier League aims to do – wait several weeks to see how the public health situation unfolds before deciding next steps. This is sensible in circumstances where it is by no means certain that we will even be able to start next season in a timely fashion.

“A crisis like this is a watershed moment for the FA and the relationship it chooses to have with non-league and grassroots football. It is imperative to solve this issue sensibly and democratically over the coming weeks, with transparent, constructive and fair dialogue with respective leagues and clubs.”

Meanwhile, Dulwich Hamlet acknowledged the work that went into the inaugural season for their women’s side.

The club said: “We would like to thank everyone involved in the team for their magnificent effort on and off the pitch, in what has been a challenging season for the club. They have made a lot of people very proud and we look forward to their return next season.”

The season is currently suspended until April 30, but that return date now seems unlikely given the most recent government restrictions on the movement of people to try to curtail the spread of coronavirus.

Millwall have put back their scheduled return day for training from April 3 to April 14, with players maintaining their fitness levels with tailored individual programmes.

Wallace said recently he wants the season to finish, with Millwall just two points off the top six with nine games left.

The attacker feels the break could benefit the Lions, who have one of the smallest squads in the Championship.

Wallace also admits he could benefit from a break. He scored ten goals this season until the end of December but has just one since.

Wallace feels attacking players are held to higher standards as their output is judged on goals and assists.

He conceded that perhaps he was running low on energy levels before the season was interrupted in early March.

“Yeah a little bit, but it’s a long season,” Wallace told the News. “As an attacking player I think sometimes it’s very

difficult. I watch players in the Premier League that are worth £100million and they can have a quiet seven or eight games. Sometimes it’s like if I’ve a quiet game it’s the end of the world for some fans.

“For me to keep playing at the level I was playing at, as the gaffer said, I would end up with 30 assists and 25 goals, which is probably not realistic.

“You get judged on results. Personally I thought I did well against Birmingham in the live TV game, I thought I did well in the Bristol City game. In the Forest game I didn’t feel that involved but put a shift in and everyone said we all played really well.

“One thing I’ve learned in the last 24 months at Millwall, the season we finished eighth, last season and this season, is if the changing room does well individuals will get praise. No one cares if you score and we lose.

“The fact is that even if I didn’t score in the last nine games and we finished in the play-offs, I’d be delighted.

I know that even when I’m not scoring and creating goals I’m still helping to create chances. One of the goals against Forest I won the ball back. I’ll always work hard. Even if I don’t have that final end product they can see that I always give my all. I know that over the course of the season I have affected a lot of games, and I know that I can do that in the next nine games that are left.

“It’s just a case of whether we can get out on that bloody park.”

Wallace did have some attacking burden relieved on him after Millwall signed Mason Bennett on loan from

Derby.

Bennett wanted a fresh start away from the Rams after he was involved in a drink-driving incident last year.

He has made a positive start to his Lions career, helping to set up two goals in the 3-0 win at Notttingham Forest in Millwall’s last game before the enforced break.

“He’s a great lad,” Wallace said. “He made a mistake that a lot of people judged him for, and rightly so. When he walked in he was the first person to hold his hands up and say he knew he did wrong in the past, he made a mistake.

“He wants to keep his head down and work hard, and there is no better place than a club like Millwall for someone like him to come in, roll his sleeves up and show what he’s capable of.

“He’s just a very different option.

We’ve got a lot of crossers of the ball in terms of Connor [Mahoney], Jiri [Skalak], Fergie [Shane Ferguson].

Now we’ve got the pace and power of Benno, which is key in a division like the Championship where so many goals are scored on the counter-attack.

“I feel like me and Mahlon [Romeo] down the right-hand side are very strong. Now we’ve got the versatility as

well. Fergie came in on the left against Forest and put in a really good defensive display. You know with Fergie you’re going to get that great set-piece quality as well and he’s going to work his socks off for the team.

“Benno gives that different option. I’m sure Fergie won’t mind me saying that him and Benno are a little bit different physically. Benno will give us that pace and power, and also to be able to bring that off the bench can frighten people.

That’s what we need.

“He was very involved in a couple of the goals against Forest and he’s certainly someone who wants to prove himself at this level. He can certainly get fitter, he knows that himself, he’s not played loads of football. There’s a lot more to come from him.”

Meanwhile, Wallace is currently at home with his fiancée and two children under two as people obey new rules on social distancing.

He lives on the same street as Shaun Williams, and stresses the importance of checking in on people.

Wallace said: “Whether you’re a footballer, or whatever you are, it’s about making sure you and the people around you are alright.

“I live in a little cul-de-sac and have spoken to four or five neighbours and we’ve all come together. We need to stick together as sort of an extended family and I think it’s the same for most people.

“I’m naturally a positive person so I’m not too worried about this. But what I am worried about is the fact that, with social media and stuff, people are afraid of the unknown. I think the most important thing we can do is stay positive.

“You can see this and see that on social media and you don’t know what to believe. It’s so surreal it almost hasn’t sunk in yet. I might not play football for the next three months. You almost can’t make a judgement on it, it’s crazy.

“All you can do is keep yourself in good shape and hope that the football season does come back on and that if Millwall can achieve something great then our brilliant supporters will be there to see us do it.

“I think they deserve it for the way they have supported us up and down the country the last three years. If we can do something it will only be half the experience without the Millwall fans there behind us.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL MANAGER Gary Rowett is reluctant to speculate on when this season might resume – but believes that if it is to reach a conclusion then it would have to restart by the end of May.

The EFL have targeted a return date on April 30 at the earliest, but that looks hugely unlikely with the peak of the coronavirus predicted by experts to potentially hit in a few weeks.

The football authorities including the EFL and the Premier League were

meeting on Wednesday to discuss among other things potential wage deferrals for clubs.

Rowett also emphasised that the health of the nation should be the number one priority, and doesn’t want emergency services to be redeployed to cover football matches.

The Premier League have reportedly discussed plans to finish their season in June and July, with squads quarantined in hotels. But that also raises complex health and logistical questions.

Rowett feels if the Championship’s remaining nine-game schedule for each club doesn’t get under way by the end of May, the season might not finish.

“I think we’re waiting with anticipation

for what happens,” Rowett told the News this week. “The first thing that happens of course is that hopefully if this virus subsides and the numbers start to drop, which is what everybody wants, then that would be the time to start thinking how the season returns and if it returns.

“I’ve heard so many different arguments, there are so many different ideas. The only thing I would say is that, for me, it’s a time issue. If the season’s going to finish I think it has to restart sometime between the middle of May and the end of May. “Otherwise I think it’s going to be very, very difficult to complete. view to finish the season. If even we were mid-table I think I’d have the same opinion, I think it’s the right thing to do.

“But, of course, the nation’s health is more important and what we don’t want to do is start taking emergency vehicles off the streets to manage football games when they’re needed in more important situations.

“So if we can strike the right balance then it’s going to be a positive thing to get football back on TV.” It was confirmed last week that Steps 3-7 of the football pyramid would have their seasons voided, meaning the likes of Fisher’s campaign is over.

Rowett questioned that decision.

He said: “I was really surprised that

lower in the pyramid the FA voided those seasons, I found that strange.

I’m not suggesting I understand why, I’m not criticising it. I found it strange because, for me, every club is important to their community, every club works just as hard as the other. A South Shields has worked just as hard as a Liverpool to get to where they are, so why void them?

“I don’t understand that, but there must be a reason.”
