The new leader of Southwark Council will be chosen by councillors and not an all-members vote, despite some support among backbenchers for open selection to be trialled in the borough.

As the News has reported, after a decade at the helm Peter John is stepping down as Southwark Council leader, announcing the decision at last month’s full council assembly (February 26).

His last day will be Wednesday, March 25, at the next full assembly, when his successor is elected by councillors.

How council leaders are chosen has become one of Labour’s internal battle grounds. The Momentum wing of the party is pushing for an all-member vote as part of its wider ‘democracy review’. Some councils already have member-selected leaders in the form of directly elected mayors.

It’s an idea Cllr John has previously dismissed as ‘no doubt the brainchild activist on work experience’, arguing that council and

its cabinet would fail to function properly without having a leader elected with their full confidence.

“An example of the kind of problems that situation produces are evident from the Parliamentary Labour Party since 2015,” he wrote on a politics blog online in early February this year.

“It’s surely not something that anyone rational would want to extend to local government.”

In Southwark’s three constituency Labour parties a motion for debate, seen by the News, argues that “empowering party members to decide the new leader makes for a richer discussion about the future direction of Southwark Council.”

An open letter has also been sent to the party’s National Executive Committee calling for the 5000 plus local members to have their say in an ‘invigorating, radical grassroots system’ – signed by five of Labour’s backbenchers.

They have also argued that regardless of how the vote is decided contenders should take part in local hustings. The News

According to our sources, three current cabinet members have thrown their hat into the ring, and two backbenchers. Kieron Williams (housing) and Johnson Situ (planning and development) are said to be frontrunners.

(who currently holds the jobs, business and innovation portfolio) is another contender and the only woman to put herself forward.

Backbenchers Martin Seaton and Sunny Lambe have also launched bids. Seaton represents North Walworth ward and is chair of the council’s planning committee.

Lambe is a South Bermondsey councillor and chair of the north-east multi-ward forum.

Michael Scorer, Southwark Council’s strategic director for housing and modernisation, was left standing in last minute for councillor Kieron Williams, who was unable to attend Saturday’s event in Camberwell due to illness.

One attendee shouted out to the room “he’s the fall guy”, while moderators stepped up to ensure the angered audience did not take Mr Scorer to task for political decisions he has no say over.

Mr Scorer offered apologies for heating chaos: “I think that our heat networks are not in good condition and have not been invested in or maintained over the years,” he said.

“Some are 30-40 years old and at the end of their lifespan.” At least £350 million is needed to bring them up to scratch and to meet carbon targets.

On service charges and major works, he conceded communication between the council and residents needed to improve – “you can’t over-communicate” and admitted he believed ‘some’ bills are ‘unacceptably big’.

As the News has reported, leaseholders across Southwark have been slapped with financially crippling costs – some over £100,000.

Council leaseholders are particularly vulnerable to eye watering major works bills given that councils are unable to keep ‘sinking funds’ to pay for

unexpected major works.

If they try to take legal action, leaseholders are faced with a David and Goliath-style battle. One leaseholder who recently won a tribunal, then lost her case in court after Southwark brought out a top QC. At the last Southwark Homeowners Conference, the 350-strong audience urged the council to pledge it would always mediate first.

As that demand was reiterated, Mr Scorer said the idea had been included in his department’s plans but was a ‘political decision’ ultimately out of his control.

Large cheers came for one woman who described leasehold as a “feudalistic system. We are serfs and we are always going to keep paying and paying and freeholders can do whatever they like.”

Small boutique makes London Fashion Week

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A small family-owned Bermondsey designer’s clothes for children have been modelled on the London Fashion Week catwalk alongside big-hitting brands.

Bellos Boutique, on Bermondsey’s West Lane, specialises in Spanish clothing for babies and children up to fourteen-yearsold.

Clothes designed by its co-founder, Camellia Rankou, were showcased last month at Mini Mode’s Global Fashion Week in London next to industry heavyweights.

“It’s such a big deal for us coming from such a small background,” said Ms Rankou, who runs the business alongside her husband and her three children.

“We’ve haven’t been recognised for our own brand before, so to be asked to be on the cat walk is massive next to big

Coming to a Rotherhithe boozer

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Rotherhithe boozer is to host a new pub quiz – and the competition might just be a newborn baby.

The ‘Bub Quiz’ idea is the brainchild of mum Alicia Edwards, who found it hard to socialise on pub quizzes as a new parent.

As a result, she set up monthly toddler-and-baby friendly pub quizzes across London, which are now coming to Rotherhithe’s Old Salt Quay.

“Whilst on maternity leave I found it very difficult to find a group where, for even a short time, I could be an adult,” she said. “All the local groups were aimed at entertaining the

babies.”

The first Rotherhithe-based instalment of the baby-friendly quizzes takes place on March 31, from 11.30am to 12.30am.

Other sessions take place in Covent Garden, Morden, Pimlico and Wapping. Ms Edwards said she organised the quizzes because there wasn’t anything available for parents that allowed them to socialise along with their new-borns.

“I came up with the idea for Bub Quiz in hope to fill that void,” she said.

“This is a vital group for new parents at what can be a very lonely time.”

The business has been operating from West Lane for nearly two years after Camellia took a career change from accounting to concentrate on designing fashion for kids.

She and her husband made the plunge after finding it difficult to find traditional children’s clothing for their eldest daughter, now aged seven.

“It was really hard to find unique clothing,” said the 27-year-old. “I’ve always thought that kids should be dressed like kids… like a really traditional 1940s look.”

The boutique stocks ranges from Spain, where the business found clothing that was traditional, but has also begun plans to increase its own range of designs.

At the catwalk, the businesses’ first collection, called the Valencia collection, was showcased. It also plans a new big collection for autumn and winter of around thirty to forty looks, all made in Spain.

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL’S BOARD are in selfisolation after they came into contact with Nottingham Forest’s owner last Friday night and were being tested for coronavirus on Wednesday.

Steve Kavanagh and several senior club representatives were quarantined after being at the City Ground last week for the Lions’ 3-0 win over Forest.

Evangelos Marinakis, who also owns Greek club Olympiakos, confirmed on Tuesday he had contracted the virus.

Marinakis was also in contact with Forest’s squad and images emerged on social media of him posing for selfies with fans.

Forest’s players were tested on Tuesday, with results coming back negative as the News went to press on Wednesday.

Any positive results would have put not just Millwall’s scheduled Championship clash against Derby County at The Den this Saturday into doubt, but the entire weekend’s second-tier schedule. Forest are due

to travel to Sheffield Wednesday.

Apart from the board, staff at The Den were at work on Wednesday.

The squad trained as normal at Calmont Road, though there were no handshakes among squad members or with the media in various engagements on Tuesday.

The results of the tests for coronavirus for the board are expected this Thursday (March 12).

Millwall are putting in place extra measures at The Den this weekend, including sanitising facilities at entry and exit points around the stadium.

Shortly after the news about Marinakis broke on Tuesday, Millwal said in a statement they were “aware of the news and are seeking appropriate medical advice and guidance. All necessary precautions are already being taken.”

The club provided a further update on Tuesday afternoon: “Millwall can confirm that senior club representatives who came into contact with Mr Marinakis last Friday have all begun a period of self-isolation, as per government advice.

“This is purely a precautionary measure and no individual has

displayed any symptoms.

“The club will continue to follow all necessary guidance from the appropriate bodies.”

Forest also released a statement that said: “Nottingham Forest can confirm that owner Evangelos Marinakis has tested positive for the coronavirus.

“Mr Marinakis was diagnosed after showing the first symptoms on his return to Greece yesterday afternoon.

During his short stay in Nottingham last week he did not show any symptoms of the virus.

“The club are seeking advice from

medical professionals and the relevant governing bodies to ensure the correct measures are taken.

“Until this time the club will be making no further comment.”

Football fixtures and sports events across Europe have been postponed or played behind closed doors.

Manchester City’s scheduled Premier League fixture against Arsenal on Wednesday was called off. Marinakis was at Emirates Stadium in February when Olympiakos beat Arsenal in the Europa League.

“Anyone who is worried they have coronavirus should check with NHS 111 online, and for any other health concerns, it remains the case that people can see a GP in their local practice,” said an NHS spokesperson.

“As a precaution to protect patients, staff and the public, appointments booked online may be followed up with a call by the surgery, to make sure they see the right person in the right place for their illness.”

Those who think they may have been

infected with the virus are still advised not to attend GP surgeries following a string of cases where buildings needed to be deep-cleaned following

coronavirus contact.

GP SURGERY stops ALL FACE TO FACE APPOINTMENTS

A message sent to all patients at the Albion Street Group practice has asked that those with appointments not attend the surgery.

First section of cycleway opens

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The first section of the Cycleway 4 route between Southwark Park Road and Rotherhithe roundabout has opened.

It is part of the construction of a

major segregated cycle route from Tower Bridge, along Tooley Street, Jamaica Road and onto Deptford.

Once completed, it will see the route stretching from Tower Bridge to Greenwich.

“We’ve worked closely with TfL on this and the roundabout’s new, wider pavements, which will help pedestrians feel safer too,” said Cllr Richard Livingstone, who holds the transport brief at Southwark.

“I hope that the new roundabout and the imminent completion of Cycleway 4 along Jamaica Road and Tooley Street, will encourage people to take to Southwark’s streets, both on foot and by bike.”

Motorists have complained of delays to their journey while work is ongoing to build the route along Jamaica Road.

TfL says the works on this particular stretch of the route will be complete

by May, and advises drivers to seek other routes where possible.

Will Norman, who is London’s walking and cycling commissioner, said that the route would allow for more journeys to be taken by foot or bike, to clean up the capital’s air pollution.

“By creating new crossings and segregated routes in Rotherhithe, we are making it safer and more convenient for many more Londoners to walk and cycle, which is crucial to clean up our toxic air,” he said.

Work is still ongoing on a further section of the route in Deptford’s Creek Road, with work on nearby Evelyn Road in begin in May. Construction work on a number of other Cycleways across London is also ongoing, including Cycleway 9 between Brentford and Olympia in west London.

At the time the News went to press Southwark had eight recorded cases of COVID-19 so far, the fifth highest in England – behind Hertfordshire (16) Kensington and Chelsea (13) Devon (13) and Hampshire (10).

As of 9am on Tuesday, March 10, 373 people had come down with the virus in the UK, the vast majority (324) in England.

Six people had died from the illness. The biggest jump in cases was on Sunday, March 8, with 65 new diagnoses.

A woman in her 20s was attacked between 2am and 2.20am on Sunday, December 29, near Kennington Park Road by an unknown man. She also suffered a blow to the head.

Detective Inspector Ian Kenward said: “Enquiries are ongoing and we are keen to speak to the man in the [image].

“We are urging anyone who may have been in the area or who recognises him to contact police.”

more trees getting the chop than planted despite climate emergency Exclusive

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has cut down more trees than it has planted in the last decade despite declaring a climate emergency.

Data shared with the News by Southwark’s Liberal Democrats show that since 2018 the Labour-run council has recorded a net loss of nearly 1,000 trees.

This comes after cabinet papers, published in December 2019, recorded that over 1,200 trees had been lost since 2010. Although it unclear how much these two figures overlap, they suggest a net loss of nearly 2,000 in the last decade.

Last year the council declared a climate emergency. The London Mayor’s office has also declared ambitious targets for increasing the capital’s tree canopy by ten per cent before 2050.

The local authority has already pledged to always replace a felled tree, but these aren’t always like-for-like replacements – or timely ones.

Peter John, Southwark Council’s leader, did not dispute the figures, telling the News: “We never remove a tree without careful consideration of all available options to retain it and we are replacing all of the trees lost through our management, when this is not possible” He added: “Managing 80,000 trees is a continuous ongoing process, that largely centres around balancing our desire to care for, maintain and grow our tree stock, with managing any risk presented by sick or dying trees, to people in their vicinity.”

One site to lose out is Dickens Square Park, undergoing a £1.5 million revamp. In total, 98 trees will be felled with just 20 planted. The remaining 78 are being placed elsewhere in the borough.

However, the council has to balance calls for more nature and tree cover with complaints of anti-social behaviour in shaded and unlit areas – many of which cropped up during a public consultation.

The plans, with reduced tree cover, were also endorsed by a ‘designing out crime’ team at the Met, which helps councils design spaces in such a

way to discourage crime.

Southwark Lib Dems have blasted the council’s record and say the new figures show the climate emergency declaration pays lip-service without action.Lib Dem councillors Graham Neale and Adele Morris say air quality concerns could be immediately addressed by installing ‘CityTree stations’ in pollution hotspots – including those that have seen tree felling. They are pushing for ten of these air purifiers, which are like portable living walls, to be placed in the borough’s most polluted streets, having the equivalent impact of 270 trees.

Campaigns have cropped up across the borough to protect mature trees at risk of felling. These have included those felled within the boundary of Camberwell Old Cemetery due to development of the site.

Last year, two oaks in Sydenham Hill Wood were temporarily saved after an outcry. The council had planned to give them the chop during maintenance works to the footbridge they straddle but is now holding a consultation until August. The earliest the oaks could be felled would be in September 2020.

Bakerloo Line extensions needs funding

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Politicians have called on the Government to provide funding for Transport for London (TfL) to unlock an extension on the Bakerloo Line.

The tube extension beyond Elephant and Castle is a key part of Southwark’s Old Kent Road regeneration plans to meet a target of building 20,000 new homes.

In a letter to Grant Shapps, the secretary of state for transport, the London Assembly transport committee demanded committed funding for TfL beyond 2020-21.

Without this money being pledged,

TfL would be unable to guarantee investment in long-term infrastructure projects, warned the transport committee chair, Navin Shah AM. “TfL should not have to beg for funding year on year. It is critical that London receives steady, and long-term investment, in order to ensure the success of this city,” he said.

He also warned that the Mayor would not be able to meet a commitment of 80 per cent of all journeys being made by public transport by 2041 without an estimated £3.3bn in investment every year.

Thousands of residents across Southwark and Lewisham have thrown their weight behind an extension to the

Bakerloo which would see two tube stations on the Old Kent Road.

“The south-east of London has been woefully underserved by the underground network for too long,” said Cllr Peter John, the leader of Southwark Council.

His counterpart in Lewisham, Damien Egan, added: “The Bakerloo line extension would be revolutionary for Lewisham.

“But bringing the Bakerloo line to Lewisham and beyond to Hayes can only happen if the government gives TfL certainty around investment funding.”

The Government is due to provide a response to the assembly’s transport committee by Friday, March 20.

Tickets for VE Day Party

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Tickets have launched for a free VE Day celebration for two hundred Bermondsey and Rotherhithe pensioners at Millwall – with free pie ‘n’ mash.

The event, supported by the News, is being organised by Bermondsey Pie ‘n’ Mash at Millwall Community Trust on May 8, the 75th anniversary of VE Day. Pensioners living in the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe postcodes will be treated to a slap-up evening of entertainment, refreshments and food, but places must be reserved.

For those who are less mobile, the company is providing ten free return cabs with local taxi firm, Star Cars, on a first-come-first served basis.

“Bermondsey pie ‘n’ mash decided to put this on because we wanted to give something back to the good old people of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe who often get overlooked,” said the

business’ co-founder, Tammy Jukes.

“So come join us for a good old cockney knees-up and celebrate VE Day in style.”

Promised at the event are entertainment from the Cockney Knights and DJ Kev, “playing your favourites from yesteryear,” refreshment including alcohol and a raffle with all money raised being donated to the Millwall Community Trust.

A special surprise guest will also be attending. A fundraising drive to put on the free event gathered around four-and-a-half thousand pounds with major contributions from firms including funeral directions Albin and drinks company Donovans.

Watchdog says man shot dead was ‘acting suspiciously’ on the South Bank

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A man shot dead at the weekend by the Met was allegedly “acting suspiciously” at the Southbank Centre, the police watchdog has said.

In a statement on Monday, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), said so far evidence indicated that the man had aroused suspicions in the vicinity of the Royal Festival Hall at around 11.25pm on Sunday.

A member of the public reported their suspicions to two Ministry of Defence police officers on patrol who tried to stop the man – who police claim had two knives.

A taser was discharged and officers called for assistance while the man is understood to have come across Hungerford Bridge before entering Northumberland Avenue in Westminster.

Again a taser was fired. Two armed response cars from the City of London Police went to the scene and shortly

after firing a Taser, one of the officers shot the man dead in Great Scotland Yard.

Two knives have been recovered from the scene, said the IOPC, which is obliged to carry out investigations into fatal police shootings.

“Our thoughts are with all of those affected by this tragic incident,” said the organisation’s London regional director, Sal Naseem.

“Our investigators are working hard to secure evidence to establish the sequence of events which resulted in this man’s death.”

As the News went to press, the police watchdog said it believed it had uncovered the man’s identity but that his next-of-kin was to be informed.

It added that it was reviewing a large amount of CCTV and body-worn footage as part of its investigation into the shooting.

The Met said on Monday that no other members of the public or police officers were harmed during the shooting, and that it was not being treated as terror-related.

A man from Kennington is one of three convicted of killing Bright Akinleye during a drill rap music shoot in Euston.

The 22-year-old sports management graduate from Lewisham was fatally stabbed in Starcross Street on February 18 last year while making a music video. The attack was orchestrated by a friend of Bright’s rivals after a series of threats escalated on social media, with some messages even being shared from inside prison.

The court heard that Bright, a drill rap manager, had been involved in a longrunning dispute with some members of a family based on Walworth’s Aylesbury Estate.

Two of the three associates Abdoullie Ceesay (of no fixed address) and Tashawn Brewster from Kennington - were found guilty of murder at the Old Bailey on Monday (March 9). The third, Oliver Petts from Bromley (b. 04.01.1990), pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

The prosecution said 28-year-old Cessay saw Bright shooting the video and used the chance encounter as an opportunity to plan an attack, enlisting Petts and Brewster.

During the attack Bright tried to escape and ran into the nearby Wesley Hotel, where he collapsed and died in the foyer, surrounded by paramedics.

There were three stab wounds to both thighs, and slash wounds across his hands from trying to defend himself.

A ‘Rambo’ style knife was found next to him and a trail of blood led to where his attackers had fled by car.

The court was told that Brewster, aged 21, from Kennington Park Road, was identified after his DNA was found on the weapon’s handle and on a pair of trainers covered with Bright’s blood that were recovered from a nearby flat.

A day after the attack, Ceesay stopped using his mobile phone and Petts disposed of the Mercedes, used as a getaway car, the jury heard.

Catherine Gould, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “This was a targeted hit, planned after chancing upon Bright during the recording of a music video.

“There was no reason for the defendants to involve themselves in what had been a dispute between Bright and others.

“However, Ceesay saw this as an opportunity to win some favour with his friends by launching an attack on Bright when he was outnumbered and defenceless.

“This stabbing was an ambush and insofar as Brewster is concerned, we have no evidence that he had ever previously met the man whose life he so cruelly put an end to.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Bright Akinleye at this difficult time. I hope that these verdicts provide a sense of closure.”

All three will be sentenced on March 26 this year.

Mr Larner made headlines around the world when he charged the terrorists during June 2017’s attack, roaring: “F**k you, I’m Millwall.”

Croydon Magistrates’ Court dismissed the allegations against the ‘Lion of London Bridge’ on Friday morning after the prosecution’s only witness failed to arrive and give evidence against him.

The 50-year-old, living in Peckham, had been accused of racially abusing a member of staff at Maudsley Hospital in July last year. He denied the two charges.

“There’s one witness we hoped to call. She’s a health service professional at the Maudsley Hospital,” said a representative of the crown prosecution service.

“She confirmed her attendance on 28th February… thus far there is no response. I can’t proceed without her, so I must ask the court for an adjournment.”

This adjournment was rejected and charges dismissed after Mr Larner’s counsel successfully argued that the

case was not in the public interest, and the trial should have been heard sooner.

“This is a case where the crown has put forward one witness. It’s one person’s word against another, that’s what we’re dealing with,” said Ms Engineer of Carlson Kane solicitors in defence.

“That’s why without this witness the prosecution said they cannot continue.

Mr Larner is a victim of the 2017 London Bridge terror attack, having been stabbed seven or eight times in the head.

“He has never received proper psychological treatment after the attack.

This case is not in the public interest.”

The defence also argued that an adjournment might mean the trial could be heard as late as a year on from the alleged incident, meaning memories could not be fully relied on.

“My client is not a well man, I don’t seek to play on that at all. But for all of those reasons, I urge you not to grant this adjournment,” she said.

“It’s a serious offence… however we understand that the witness was properly warned,” the judge ruled.

Turning to the dock, he added: “Mr Larner, I think you have understood that the prosecution does not have a witness.

“The prosecution is not offering any evidence and we are dismissing this case.”

Troubles brought to the Elephant & Castle

A photography exhibition looking back at the troubles in Northern Ireland and the continuing legacy of the conflict is on display at the London College of Communication in Elephant and Castle this month.

Territorial Troubles: Contested Realities in Northern Ireland, features images and videos including interviews with men and women detained in Armagh Gaol, the Maze, and Long Kesh.

The exhibition, launching on March 17, also includes an image of journalist Lyra McKee’s funeral held last year.

McKee was shot in April 2019 in Derry, during a riot, allegedly by a New IRA dissident republican. At the time of her death, McKee had been researching unsolved killings during the troubles.

Co-curator Brigitte Lardinois, London College of Communication’s photography and research centre director, said: “We hope this exhibition will inform visitors as to the reality of

life during the troubles, while serving as a timely reminder of just how recent, and significant, the cessation of hostilities was.

“Britain’s decision to leave the European Union has enormous consequences for both Northern Ireland and the Republic, particularly regarding the peace process. The murder of Belfast journalist Lyra McKee last year shows the fragility of this peace.

“This project is an opportunity to remind ourselves what is at stake, and the devastating impact that a revival of sectarianism can have.”

The 21 photographs are taken from the new edition of Magnum Ireland, a photobook first published in 2005 and now reprinted with a new chapter focusing on the 2010s. Alongside the images are essays from writers including John Banville, Colm Tóibín, and Anne Enright.

Opened in 1964, the NSC is a Grade II listed sports centre and athletics stadium with a maximum capacity of 24,000.

Recognised as a key piece of 20th century architecture, it has also been the site of historic sporting events before the new London Stadium opened for the 2012 Olympics.

The building needs significant investment to secure its future as a community sports facility.

Holly Conway, a 26-year-old office manager, hopes to raise £350 for Sense, a charity that has given advice and support to her sister, Megan who contracted meningitis at birth.

“Megan was born with an array of disabilities, including being partially sighted and we were unaware of what she could and couldn’t see,” says Holly.

“One of her neurologists suggested that we get in touch with Sense to see how they could help.

“A support worker from Sense came and worked with Megan and managed to figure out her sight limits, and ways we could support her, which was a weight lifted in a time with many unanswered questions.

“The support and advice from Sense was a huge help.”

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A man dubbed Canada’s biggest Millwall fan who passed away last year has been brought back to his beloved Den, after his family buried his ashes there.

John Duggan, 84, never stopped supporting the Lions, despite moving thousands of miles away to Canada to work in the prison service in the 1970s.

The super-fan even received a personal video message from former manager Neil Harris for his birthday and sixtieth wedding anniversary in July 2017 at his home in British Columbia.

Now, after John sadly passed away last year, his British-based family have buried his ashes in Millwall’s garden of remembrance in a final fitting tribute to their loved one.

The idea was suggested by his elder

sister, Joan Armstrong, who lives in Forest Hill.

“I thought to myself, he would love to have some his ashes at the club,” said the 91-year-old. “I found out they had a garden of remembrance which I didn’t know about.”

Joan contacted the club to arrange a burial of the ashes, before flying to collect them from John’s wife Anne in Canada.

Avid antique collectors, John and Anne had assembled a large collection of teapots over the years – and at his family home, his ashes were kept in a large pink teapot.

The Duggan and Armstrongs were scratching their heads for a way to transport John’s ashes to the UK until they came across a wooden box which used to hold tea in it.

“All quite British!” laughed Joan.

Helping Joan last month was her son, Christopher and his wife Sylvia.

“I was upset at first, but he would’ve loved to known that his ashes were at Millwall’s ground,” she told the News.

“Millwall has been wonderful, everybody was so kind.”

Alongside the burial, a plaque has been erected in John’s memory at the Den, with a poem written by Joan.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk There have been no reported injuries after a blaze at an Elephant and Castle skyscraper on Sunday evening.

The fire on Southwark Bridge Road affected a four-room flat on the 25th floor of a 39-storey skyscraper.

Part of the flat was damaged but nobody was hurt, said the fire brigade.

Five fire engines and around 35 firefighters were called at 6.05pm and it was under control 45 minutes later.

Crews from Dowgate, Lambeth, Old Kent Road, Dockhead and Whitechapel fire stations were on the scene.

Peckham Sponsors Refugees set on second family

A community group who fundraised to relocate a Syrian refugee family to Southwark last year are hoping to welcome a second family, writes Katherine Johnston...

In a huge campaigning win for environmental campaigners, Southwark Council has committed to rolling out 100 per cent renewable electricity in all councilrun schools.

Fossil Free Southwark, which campaigns for divesting from fossil fuel investments and lobbies for renewable energy sources, wrote an open letter to Southwark Council in advance of its energy contract being up for renewal this month.

Changing the five-year contract is one of the quickest wins for the council in its efforts to become carbon neutral by 2030.

Freedom of information (FOI) requests lodged by Fossil Free Southwark to 94 schools across Southwark found that only one of the 38 to respond was able to confirm how much of its energy supply was renewable.

Between January and December of 2019, Southwark Council spent almost £13.5 million purchasing energy through a public sector buying group – LASER – which is supplied by NPower.

According to NPower’s own data, its energy has a lower than average percentage of renewable energy at between 8.9-26.2 per cent compared with a national average of 32.8 per cent.

Many state schools’ energy is bought on their behalf by local authorities.

Speaking to the News two years ago, he reminisced about seeing his first ever game aged just six at the Old Den – which was so packed that children were being passed over to the front.

And he spoke of having watched his team play against the Canadian national team in Vancouver in 2004, wearing a t-shirt emblazoned: “Canada’s biggest Millwall fan.”

Outside of following the Lions’ every move, John enjoyed going on cruises with his wife of more than sixty years, Anne.

“He became fanatical about Millwall,” said his sister. “He just followed them the whole time. Everyone knew he was a fan.”

John is survived by two sons and two daughters, alongside multiple grandchildren.

Hackney Borough Council will switch to completely renewable sources this year with the aim to start generating energy, too.

In an open letter to the council, sent on February 23, Fossil Free Southwark called on the borough to procure 100 per cent renewable electricity and a gas supply with more than ten per cent renewable content.

Councillor Richard Livingstone, the cabinet member responsible for coordinating the council’s climate emergency plans, said green electricity was already on its way and clean gas supply would hopefully follow suit.

“As part of our plan to tackle the climate emergency, can confirm that we are rolling out 100 per cent renewable electricity across all of our sites, and have extended this offer to all council schools. There are currently supply challenges with renewable gas, which is generally created at anaerobic digestion plants, so we are not yet in a position to adopt this fully.

“But we hope to adopt renewable gas in the future and are working towards this.”

Fossil Free Southwark is now calling on schools with independent energy contracts to take action and switch to greener suppliers.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey man has been charged with attempted murder after an early hours collision left a sixteen-year-old boy in a critical condition.

Shaik Rahman, of Bermondsey Wall East, has been charged with attempted murder

and driving a motor vehicle dangerously in connection with the collision on Wilson Grove on Saturday morning.

Cops were called to the incident at around 2.40am, which involved a car and a motorbike.

The car did not stop at the scene, police say.

The victim, who was riding the motorbike, was rushed to an east London

hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

He is from the Southwark area. His next-of-kin are aware of his condition, said the Met. Mr Rahman, 33, was arrested yesterday in south London, before being charged.

He was due to appear in custody at Croydon Magistrates’ Court as the News went to press.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A dad-of-four has become the first person in the world to successfully have his throat and lung cancers removed at the same time by robots.

The innovative op at Guy’s Hospital means patient Harvey, 49, did not need to spend as many weeks recovering as conventional open surgery and will give him the best chance of a cure.

The surgery, which took place on August 14 last year, has been followed by courses of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

“It was devastating to be told I had cancer,” he said.

“To be my age and have two cancers, particularly in the lung as well, is a spot of bad luck to say the least.

“When I found out about the neck, I managed to get my head around that.

“The prognosis was good. And then you get hit and told you have another cancer, lung, which is far worse. That was the most difficult thing to hear.”

First, a team of surgeons used robots to remove Harvey’s neck tumour, with another using robotic surgery to remove two-thirds of Harvey’s right lung. It last six hours in total.

“It is testament to Harvey’s courage, his will-power to recover and the minimally invasive robotic approach that he went home six days later without the need for a feeding or breathing tube,” said Asit Arora, a consultant at the Trust.

“Above all, he was able to start radiotherapy almost straight away due to the success of this ground breaking operation.”

Harvey has since completed radiotherapy for the neck, which began in September. He has now begun radiotherapy for the lung, following chemotherapy.

“To be part of something like that is wonderful and it’s given us hope where we had none,” he said.

Thirty-two student from years seven and eight took part in the junior division of the Legacy Alpha and Omega Schools and University National Championships.

Held at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Saturday, February 22, the competition saw the team from the school near Elephant and Castle perform their routine timed to music.

One of the school’s team members was the youngest to compete on that day, and the majority had never performed any kind of dance or gymnastics routine in front of an audience.

PE teacher Tara Finnegan said: “Since September, the students have been training each week to learn and perfect their routine and I am overjoyed to say that their hard work paid off and they were crowned champions of their division”.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk The RSPCA will not prosecute a top Elephant and Castle lawyer who clubbed a fox to death with a baseball bat on Boxing Day while wearing his wife’s silk kimono.

Jolyon Maugham sparked widespread outrage when he confessed on social media that he had battered the fox while he was hungover, after it got caught in the netting of his chicken coop.

The RSPCA said an independent postmortem discovered the fox died swiftly, but that it could not condone the killing of healthy foxes.

It added that it understood the incident had caused upset to many animal lovers.

Southwark Council was also dragged into the bizarre row, after it was forced to deny that council policy supported bludgeoning foxes to death.

In a statement, the RSPCA said it would not seek charges against Maugham, as there would not be a realistic chance of conviction.

“It is important to understand that it is not necessarily illegal to kill a fox, but if unnecessary suffering is caused, a criminal offence may have been committed,” the organisation said.

An independent post mortem and forensic veterinary assessment of the fox’s body was carried out and the findings indicate the fox was killed swiftly.

The men are due to appear at Croydon Magistrates' Court on Thursday, March 19 at 9.30am.

A cheaper ferry option for the river crossing became the agency’s preferred option after cost estimates for a proposed bridge across the Thames spiralled to more than £600m.

Last week, chair of the London Assembly’s transport committee, Navin Shah AM, accused TfL of getting its sums wrong on the Rotherhithe Bridge, and demanded

answers on how the ferry service would run.

Estimated costs for a walking and cycling bridge jumped five-fold from £120m in just two years, causing TfL to junk the project in July – despite the idea being overwhelmingly backed by both local councillors and residents.

Now TfL says it is progressing plans for a “clean, fast ferry service” with a second consultation on the designs to be expected in summer.

“This new rapid ferry service between Rotherhithe and Canary Wharf would make it even easier for Londoners to get around the capital by bike or on foot and would bring a boost to businesses in the area.”

Consultants have also been brought on board to assess how TfL could run the service, including whether it could be free to customers.

TfL added that it was considering where new cycle docking stations could be added to cycle routes in the area, including to areas planned to link into the pier from where the ferry would depart.

Stats released by the service reveal that it treated 83 patients in Southwark across 2019, only behind the boroughs of Westminster, Haringey and Lambeth.

In the year, trauma specialists from the air ambulance treated 1,730 patients – with nearly a third of the cases being stabbings or shootings.

Other key causes of an air ambulance call were traffic accidents, falls from height and heart attacks.

“Critical injury from road traffic incidents, falls from height, assaults and other injuries are the biggest killer of people aged under 40,” said the service’s medical director, Dr Tom Hurst.

“We have a proud history of pioneering new ways to save lives

and have developed groundbreaking treatments that mean people who would have died at the scene of the incident a few years ago are now surviving.”

Among these groundbreaking techniques are the use of a technology which allows live-streaming video from any 999 caller’s phone to see the

patient.

The Air Ambulance is funded primarily through donations, but is jointly supported by the Barts Health NHS Trust and the London Ambulance Service.

Barts Trust provides doctors and helipads, while LAS provide paramedics and emergency infrastructure.

ESCAPES jail TERM FOR CONNING OAP

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A fraudster who conned an elderly man out of £1,800, leaving him ‘so frightened he struggled to eat’ was sentenced in court this week.

East Londoner Mohammed Hussain, 37, pretended to be a policeman in order to access his victim’s bank cards before going on a spending spree. He targeted a man in his 80s at his Southwark home.

Appearing at Inner London Crown Court on Wednesday, March 4, he was sentenced to eighteen months in prison on each count, to run concurrently, suspended for two years. Hussain pleaded guilty to both charges of fraud by false representation.

The court heard how in November 2017, around midday, Hussain rang his victim, pretending to be a police officer investigating fraud involving the OAP’s bank card.

He asked a series of questions about his accounts including his PIN numbers and then told him to go to a bank and withdraw £4,000 – which the victim refused to do.

In an elaborate hoax he even managed to keep the victim’s phone on his line after calling 999 – meaning the elderly man’s phone went straight back to

The swap, planned for April 23 in the Lordship Pub, will coincide with Earth Day (April 22) and Fashion Revolution’s ‘national swap week’ (April 20-26).

Fashion Revolution is a group of people and organisations working in fashion who want to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint and improve its ethics.

Organisers Kath Lovett, Kellie Dalton, and Alaina Creedy said: “We have had enough of buying unethically sourced clothing, and were worried about the impact of the fashion industry on the environment and on the lives of the clothing industry workers.

“We set up this clothes swap as a perfect chance to refresh wardrobes, meet with friends and neighbours, plus understand more about how clothes are made, the materials used to make them – and why it matters.”

CCTV captured Hussain walking to the man’s home and, at the front door, convincing him to hand over his bank cards.

Hussain spent over £1,800 in Stratford’s Westfield Shopping Centre in two shops – again while being recorded by CCTV. Later the same day, the victim told his granddaughter what had happened, who immediately called the bank and police.

The court heard that while she was supporting her grandfather, he received a call from someone pretending to be from the bank.

After she informed the caller that she had been in touch with the bank, the caller said: “Tell your granddad to be careful who he gives his card to and that he should have a lovely Christmas.”

Hussain, from Tower Hamlets, was arrested nearly two years later after being stopped by police on an unrelated matter, who matched his image to CCTV from the unsolved crimes.

Officers say the victim was left “so frightened he struggled to eat, rarely left the house, and was unable to trust people”.

Prison dads-to-be get tips on being good fathers Nurses are helping expectant fathers who are serving sentences in prison to be better dads thanks to a unique project run by evelina London and Her Majesty’s Prison Brixton.

Evelina London's family nurse partnership team provide workshops and role play to prepare dads-tobe in Brixton Prison for positive parenting, including advice on how to support their partner, stages in child development, how to plan activities and the importance of play.

Emma Burgess, family nurse partnership supervisor, said: "We welcome all men in prison who have recently had or are about to have a baby. It’s all about reaching out early, encouraging expectant fathers to feel more connected to their babies, confident and considerate towards

their children, and influencing the way they interact with their child when they go home.

“They may wonder, ‘What can I offer a baby?’ These sessions demonstrate how important it is for them to be in their children’s lives and to feel supported to be the best dad they can be.”

Feedback from the expectant fathers has been overwhelmingly positive.

Asked what was useful about the workshops, one dad-to-be said he learnt to “watch the tone of my voice” and that “babies pick up on positive and negative vibes”. Another father learnt to “have more fun with my kids”.

Birsen Hilmi, family resettlement team leader for Pact (Prison Advice and Care Trust), who are based at HMP Brixton, said: “To live in

prison – it’s a tough environment. But Evelina London’s nurses have pulled them away from all that. They run intimate, caring sessions that make the men feel like they can be an effective parent – a dad.

“It’s fantastic to see these guys learning how to change nappies on baby dolls and to watch as the nurses use different sized fruit to show them how big the baby will get. The nurses are so sensitive and non-judgemental and have shown real empathy throughout.”

The Family Nurse Partnership also provides an intensive, early intervention home visiting programme to first time young mothers under the age of 24. They won NHS Lambeth Clinical Commissioning Group’s Innovation in Lambeth award at the Lammy Awards in September 2019.

Call for schoolkids to design nursing uniform a coMPetitioN has been launched for southwark schoolkids to design a new uniform for nurses and midwives at Guy’s and st thomas’.

Launched in collaboration with the Florence Nightingale museum, the competition is open to children aged 7-11 who attend school in Southwark or Lambeth. The theme is “a nursing uniform for our future nurses and midwives”.

The top three shortlisted entrants and their classes will be invited to a special awards ceremony, held at St Thomas’ Hospital at the end of April, where the winner will be announced. During the ceremony, a nurse will model the design, and then it will be displayed at the Florence Nightingale museum for a week.

“We want children to know that there are no limitations on who can be a nurse or midwife and we want to inspire them to consider a nursing career at our Trust,” said the Trust’s chief nurse, Dame Eileen Sills. “It will be really interesting to see what the children think nurses and midwives will be wearing in future.

“I want the children to use their imaginations and have lots of fun with their designs.”

The winner and runner up will receive prizes for themselves and their school.

The deadline for competition entries is Friday 27 March. The awards ceremony will be held on 30 April.

OVID-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. It's caused by a virus called coronavirus.

We’re hearing so much about COVID-19 in the news and on social media that it can be difficult to know where to get the right advice.

In Southwark and across England we are well prepared for outbreaks of new infectious diseases. The NHS has put in place measures to ensure the safety of all patients and NHS staff while also ensuring services are available to the public as normal.

You can find the latest information about the symptoms of coronavirus infection and areas where recent travel may have resulted in a high risk of exposure on nhs.uk/ conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/ NHS 111 has an online coronavirus service that can tell you if you need medical help and advise you what to do. Use this online service if: • you think you might have coronavirus; • in the last 14 days you've been to a country or area with a high risk of coronavirus; • you've been in close contact with someone with coronavirus.

Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. Call 111 if you need to speak to someone.

Like the common cold, coronavirus infection usually occurs through close contact with a person with novel coronavirus via cough and sneezes or hand contact. A person can also catch the virus by touching contaminated surfaces if they do not wash their hands.

We are all being reminded to follow Public Health England advice to: • Always carry tissues with you and use them to catch your cough or sneeze. Then bin the tissue, and wash your hands, or use a sanitiser gel.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after using public transport. Use a sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

• Avoid close contact with people who are unwell.

Train delays not acceptable

L

ike many of my constituents I travel regularly to work by train and on too many occasions I find that the trains are delayed, cancelled or overcrowded.

This unreliability is frustrating, but for many of my constituents the impacts are far more serious – I have heard from constituents whose employment has been put at risk because they are late for work so often due to train delays, students who have been late for exams, and from many parents who are suffering great stress as a result of constantly struggling to get to their childcare pick up on time.

The current system in which private train operating companies (like Southeastern, Southern and GTR) run train services, and Network Rail manages the tracks and rail infrastructure, both overseen by the secretary of state for transport is failing us in south London.

It is a dysfunctional setup that fails to put the travelling public at its centre and delivers the unreliable, inadequate services which cause so much frustration, misery and heartache for my constituents.

Unbelievably at the time of writing, with just weeks to go

until the Southeastern franchise ends on April 1, we still don’t know what will replace it.

At the last election I stood on a platform of bringing the whole rail network back under democratic public ownership, with clear lines of accountability and no more excuses.

Rail services run by Transport for London have much stronger performance and higher satisfaction levels than those run by the privatised train operating companies.

We can’t go on suffering the consequences of our failing rail system in south London. It is now time for the current Secretary of State, Grant Shapps, to listen to Londoners and agree to transfer the management and operation of all suburban services to the Mayor of London.

This proposal for democratic and publicly accountable rail services is also supported by Kent’s Conservative MPs – so there is no reason not to do it!

We’ve waited long enough for a step change improvement in the reliability of our local rail services.

It’s time for a real change and I know that Labour’s Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has the skills and experience to deliver for all of us in south London who rely on the trains.

Dual crossword Tree planting isn’t always a universally popular decision – and tree numbers aren’t the only important measure the council has to take into account

outhwark Council says it will replace all the trees it has felled since 2010. But its critics say the stark figures showing a net loss of nearly 2,000 since 2010 mean it is paying no more than lip service to the climate emergency.

The story isn’t just about overall numbers. If the ultimate aim is to store more carbon, improve air quality, and help improve people’s mental health, then the type of trees and where they’re planted are hugely significant.

For people with their own gardens, adding foliage has many benefits including reducing flooding risk. But even then, there are space and safety considerations.

For that reason, most recommended garden trees tend to be smaller varieties, such as fruit trees.

Residents living in estates often have much larger trees nearby but these can pose problems.

Time and time again TRAs are telling the council they want trees pruned more regularly, felled or replaced with smaller varieties whether on the Brandon, Elmington or in Dickiens Square Park.

It makes sense that in woodland and parks separated from people’s homes – like Sydenham Hill Wood – that larger trees are protected and enabled to flourish in a mix of woodland.

But in green spaces next to housing community orchards, longer grass seeded with wildflowers, and vegetable patches, can provide some environmental and mental health benefits without creating large dark, shady spaces that are used for drug dealing and other anti-social activity.

Green walls – walls with plants growing from them – and air purifying systems can help offset some of this loss.

The question is: if a number of particularly large and mature trees do have to be felled and cannot be replaced in the same spot, is there a way to mitigate this impact and also provide a likefor-like replacement in a more suitable location outside the borough?

As he stands contemplating his fate Fifi arrives carrying a laundry bag and a cat box. These two very unrelated characters are thrown together in a play that is thought provoking, moving and not without touches of humour.

With Francis the white male and Fifi the black female we touch on a myriad of issues – in particular mental health. What exactly is mental health? Later as Francis accuses Fifi of being mad, she swiftly responds with, “I’m not the one about to jump from the clifftop.”

Francis (Gabriel Vick) and Fifi (Susan Aderin) give powerful and nuanced

Power Play on Beachy Head performances. As the story of their lives is shown through flashbacks.

They deftly move from present day to past using props as simple as a rain mac and a rug. The transitions were cleverly thought out and the actors’ change of voice and physicality really took you to another time. The constant sound of the sea and rain add to the atmosphere. Things become heated and roles reverse when Francis snaps the handcuffs on Fifi – some great movements here.

A courageous and brave moment is achieved when both actors sing a beautiful Ghanaian verse. It was completely moving and captivating.

Spells of silence at the beginning, and when eating Jollof Rice, felt as though there was an echo of the swell of the tide and time to reflect. Both characters had harrowing

stories to relate. I loved how Fifi said that the psychiatrists should take a picture of her brain to show any abnormalities as they are the deluded ones.

Whether white male or black female, does anyone ever sail through life without a touch of anxiety or depression? Mental health is everywhere affecting everyone and these two characters could not be more different, yet after several hours on Beachy Head the similarities are overwhelming.

Maybe the quieter scenes could be seen as a welcome space for the audience to reflect on their own wellbeing too.

What a fantastic idea - the stories of Bermondsey & Rotherhithe people told through old postcards from or to the area , writes Debra Gosling...

Michael Holland the News arts reporter has been a Deltiologist (postcard collector) for many years and has at least four large albums chock-a-block with these voices from the past. Upon reading the backs of the cards he got interested in the lives of the people who sent these messages back and forth. And what interesting lives they reveal.

He has put together a free travelling exhibition which throws a spotlight on to the lives of locals in the Edwardian age. There are love stories, tragedies and secret codes. Pictures of churches and streets, momentous events, schools and municipal buildings abound. You may see even some of your ancestors!

Local artist Ed Gray said: ‘If you like social history and the story of everyday lives then this exhibition is a must see.’

Bermondsey's jewel in the crown, Southwark Park, stretches over four display boards. But the most touching story of all is of Tommy Woolford. I won't spoil it for you, just get down to one of the venues below and check it out for yourself.

Are Peckham men a superior form of human being?

josh@southwarknews.co.uk ‘Yes’, was the earnest belief of the 20th century philosopher and eccentric William Margrie.

Born in 1877, Margrie was a sarf Londoner through and through. “I have no very urgent desire to go to Heaven; Peckham is good enough for me,” he once wrote.

But his fierce local pride was more unusual than most.

Margrie was a eugenicist, who believed that the ‘Peckham Man’ was a new evolutionary stage in human development. He believed himself to be a fine example of this.

Other Darwinian solutions for English decline included populating the Isle of Wight with only those physically and mentally fit, and renaming it the Eugenics Isle.

He devised a form of prose writing called ‘Tersid’ – terse and lucid – and invented the concept of a silent orchestra which “produced music without noise.”

Margrie claimed his favourite dish was boiled beef and carrots, and insisted that he had never slept outside of England.

These views were deeply held and singular, and earned him the title ‘The Sage of Peckham’ in the press.

When he died on January 12, 1960, an obituary in The Times noted how Margrie’s “theories and remedies for present ills [were] all his own.”

It added perhaps unkindly: “His pen was no less active than his brain … his handwriting was known to newspapers all over the country.”

How, then, did Margrie come by these views – and how have his writings largely disappeared from the public consciousness?

Born to a carpenter and cook in 1877 in Camberwell, William was the youngest of five children.

Between twelve and thirty, Margrie was a member of the Bermondsey Independent Labour Party, but left on account of its “anti-British outlook.”

He would later come to believe that Marxism was a mental disease; although, despite his belief in eugenics, was also an avowed antifascist.

But it was while he was a student at Morley College that he would discover the “twin gospels of rationalism and evolution.”

Maybe most famously in his lifetime, was the establishment of the London Explorers Club in September 1930 – with one club understated motto proclaiming: “Arise proud Peckham and lead the world!”

This, he declared, was a mission to “study London in all her moods and phases.”

parlours,” he wrote in The Diary of a London Explorer, a manifesto of the club’s aims.

“When we visit a building we are concerned not with dead stone, wood, and metal, but with the dramas, romances and personalities that the wood and stone represent.”

In the first three years of its existence, Margrie’s group visited 180 places including the Camberwell Beauty Mills – specialising in gummed paper – and Peak Frean’s Biscuit Factory in Bermondsey.

But they would not visit any old historical relic. Margrie wrote that those who glorified the past were

traitors to the present; and lived what he called “a 20th century life.”

Exploits of the club included ‘an allnight ramble through central London’ and treasure hunts. The Explorers also came up with a concept of Topographical Races.

Those races entailed competitors starting at Trafalgar Square and finishing at a restaurant in Holborn.

They had to visit ten institutions, with those spending the least time travelling the circuit winning.

But alongside scout-like adventures were the ‘Great Bill’s’ eccentric proclamations about modern life.

The group argued for the creation

of a Metropolitan Free State in the whole of greater London, alongside five or six home counties.

And who should be the leader of such a body, Mr London, other than Margrie himself?

Margrie founded the Mental Heavyweight Movement, a kind of intellectual equivalent of boxing.

Claiming that he “transcended Shakespeare and probably said more original things than any other mortal”, the Sage of Peckham issued heavyweight challenges to Bertrand Russell, Churchill and George Bernard Shaw.

These were not taken up.

Margrie’s views are forgotten views, and the clubs he was involved in are forgotten institutions.

There is little trace of ‘Sage Cottage’ as it was in his day, the humble home that Margrie kept at No 5 Nigel Road.

But his name lives on in Margrie Close, the SE15 street to which he lends his name – a sign of his wish to “give the name of Peckham an immortal dignity.”

“He got great fun out of life because he was such a zestful character,” wrote a friend in the Daily Mail after his death. “Last year for instance, at the age of 82, he ran in an old folks’ race – and won.”

TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC 1.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that, it made, an order under section 14 (1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 to facilitate a crane operation, being proposed in part of the above named roads.

Whilst the works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in Meadow Row between New Kent Road and Arch Street.

An alternative route for traffic will be via New Kent Road, Falmouth Road, Harper Road, Rockingham Street.

The restrictions will not apply to any person or vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The Old Kent Road gym, run by Jon Haggerty and son Jonathan – a former Muy Thai world champion – is where Jack Collins is preparing for his Cage Warriors bout against Joshua Onwordi at the O2 on March 20.

Collins took up mixed martial arts (MMA) in 2008. He lost two amateur fights in 2011 but returned in 2019 and four victories earned him a deal with First Round Management, who are based in Florida.

In early 2017, 30-year-old Collins, who is now a personal trainer and MMA coach after working for twelve years in litho printing, had finished training and was at home when he suffered a terrifying episode.

“I started having heart problems,” he explains. “One night I’ve finished training in early 2017. I’ve gone home, chilling out indoors, watching the TV and having dinner.

“I thought, ‘I’m feeling a bit unwell, I’m just going to lay down in bed’. And then my chest started to compress. My shoulders went numb, my left arm went numb. I was like, ‘okay, I think I’m dying’. I thought, ‘I need to call a paramedic, I’m really in trouble’.

“They came around and did a lot of assessments. By the time they had got there

I was hunched over, could not catch a breath.

My partner was there and my kids as well, so I was trying not to make a scene!

“We went to hospital and what they did was keep me on checks for about eight months, didn’t have to have surgery or anything like that. What they put it down to, what they thought it might be is an ectopic heartbeat. So the blood pumps into the heart, misses a beat and doesn’t release the blood from the valves. Then the second one it doubles up and can’t get through.

“In the moment I was on the phone, they said, ‘this is a heart attack in progress, we need to get someone round’.

“I used to drink a lot of Red Bull and smoke ten, 20 fags a day. Obviously that didn’t benefit my lifestyle. The doctors said to me, ‘you do this [fighting] but do this, you’re the fittest unfit person we’ve ever met. You can’t run up a flight of stairs but you’ll have a fight for fifteen minutes.’

“I go back for yearly reviews. In the buildup to this fight I’ve had to have blood tests, MRI scans to make sure I’m fit for fighting.

That fit in really well with assessments I had to have done anyway.”

He was told to knock the cigarettes on the head but also that he could still exercise.

He went back training with Steve Cooke and racked up those victories last year.

Was there any worry about stepping back into the cage?

“There’s such a big misconception,”

Collins says. “Boxing, in my opinion, is more dangerous. The idea is to punch the head and the body. Mixed martial arts, granted you can kick, knee and elbow to the head, but when you’ve decided you’ve had enough, you can go for a takedown and wrestle. There’s then no striking involved so your head is more protected.

“That’s my perception of it, you don’t have to take the punishment if you don’t want to.”

Collins will approach this fight the same as the others.

“When I’m on the way to the cage there’s always this smile, whether it’s nervous energy or whatever, but I’m just superpleased with myself at that time,” he adds.

“I love that feeling.

“I’m not someone who enjoys being in front of cameras, but when it comes to the night, I’m like, ‘yeah’.

“I know my skills are at a good level. I just need to make sure that I can go fifteen minutes, flat-out, if it is required. That’s my biggest concern. Can I last fifteen minutes of maximum work?

“That’s the main thing I’m focussing on at the minute.”

“If I get the win and get invited back, I’m hoping to get a three- or five-fight contract with [Cage Warriors]. Hopefully within that contract it will give me a chance to run for the belt in the division.

“That’s what I want to achieve.”

It was a hugely anticipated match with both teams equal on points at the top of the table and each knowing that defeat would most likely end any possible promotion hopes, with Cranbrook just one point behind in third place.

The away team looked comfortable from the start dominating both possession and

the gain line and went 5-0 up after top try-scorer Hugh Nicholson ghosted over to touch down.

Nicholson added to his tally with a great solo effort from halfway which knocked all the momentum out of Kings and gave Southwark a cushion that they wouldn’t relinquish.

Kings applied pressure in the second half through their impressive set-piece and although there were some nervous moments when the hosts brought it back to 12-6, Nicholson bundled over to complete his hat-trick and seal the victory 19-6.

Southwark edge out rivals London United 61-69 Southwark Legends SOUTHWARK LEGENDS travelled to west London to take on London United in a top-of-the-table clash, with the south Londoners taking the points.

With both sides going into the game with a similar record, a win for either would swing the division title in the favour of the winner.

The game also featured some of the best upcoming talent in the country.

Having narrowly lost the previous encounter in November, London United went into the game focused knowing a defeat could spell the end to their season.

But it was Southwark Legends who came out firing on all cylinders winning the first quarter 24-14.

A few errors from the away team and some good offensive sets allowed United to get back into the game, and very quickly they reduced the deficit as they claimed the second quarter 21-13.

The Legends were able to weather the

storm and won the third and fourth quarters 17-14 and 15-12 with second-year guard Rodney Ekwoanya contributing massively on the defensive end.

The game finished 69-61 in favour of Southwark Legends. After his heroic performance knocking in three threepointers, Donique Downer said: “As a team collectively, we’ve been hit with a lot of obstacles, but because we stayed together and remained disciplined we were able to overcome them and push through all our challenges throughout the game.”

Luke Bamgboye finished with a gamehigh 21 points, Downer scored eighteen and Malachi Jim-Lawson added sixteen to secure the victory.

Next up for the Southwark Legends is a clash with Eastside Eagles at the Damilola Taylor Centre. Doors open at 10am on Saturday and the game tips off at 12pm.

Those are the words Gavin Rose used following Dulwich Hamlet’s defeat away at Wealdstone, on a Saturday afternoon that saw their relegation worries deepen.

The Hamlet had led through Jeffrey Monakana’s first-half penalty, but a two-minute second-half turnaround from top-of-the-table Wealdstone, compounded elsewhere by a win for last-placed Hungerford Town, means Dulwich are outside the bottom two on goal difference alone.

Hungerford’s three points also closes their distance to Rose’s side to six points, and the Berkshire club concerningly have two games in hand. Rose admitted that the time has come to take the threat of the drop very seriously.

Dulwich host Hemel Hempstead this Saturday.

“We’re goal difference away from being in the bottom two, so we’re in a lot of trouble,” Rose said.

“Our main thing is to focus on our next game, trying to win the next game, and that’s the only thing we will do.”

The manager has called on his players to concentrate more in order to see out matches. Dulwich have lost a number of games from winning positions this campaign, most of which have been by one-goal margins.

That frustrates Rose.

“We knew that would happen, but the goals have come really from two set-plays, positions that we’d expect to do well from, especially with our physicality.

“I wouldn’t say it was because they opened us up, I would say that we switched off twice and they scored two crucial goals.”

Smith had lined up in the centre of midfield with Quade Taylor, but his impressive defensive work was cut short after the break.

Rose explained: “He had a knock in the first half but was starting to run out of legs as well, and wasn’t covering the pitch as well as he had done as the game wore on.

“Quade was a shield and he was in front of him, but yes he went off because he ran out of legs.

“Danny had an ankle injury in the first half and continued playing on in that half, but it started to flare up and he couldn’t move anymore.”

After the Hamlet face Hemel Hempstead on Saturday, they have a seismic clash away to St Albans – who are one league place below them in the league – the following week.

THE BRIAN Clough statue takes pride of place in the Old Market Square – but there was no one standing taller and prouder than Matt Smith in Nottingham on Friday night.

Smith, at 6ft6ins, usually stands out in most crowds anyway, but surely he would have been visible from the International Space Station as he leapt into the Nottingham night air to plant Shane Ferguson’s corner into the net.

Smith’s thirteen-minute first-half annexation of Forest’s penalty area will go down in esteemed history.

It was just the fourth Millwall hattrick scored in the first half of a Football League game since 1920. Smith is in exalted company.

It was also his first hat-trick in his Football League career, to go with four goals he scored in an EFL Cup game for Bristol City at Gillingham in 2015.

His treble moved him above Jed Wallace and Tom Bradshaw to the top of the Lions’ scoring charts this season, and he is just one goal shy of matching his career season-high in the Championship, twelve for Leeds in 2013-14.

Smith plundered Forest to send Millwall up to seventh in the table, and results were kind to them over the weekend. They could have gone down to twelfth, but instead only Bristol City clambered above them, and even then there was a brush of fortune for the Lions as Tom Cairney’s late goal

Preston also stumbled as they couldn’t increase the gap to Millwall to five points, as former Lion Ebere Eze did his old side a favour, scoring a clinching third as QPR came back to win at Deepdale.

Millwall have been needing other results to go for them for a while. Before Friday night they had won just one of their previous seven games. Only two teams in eleven years – Blackpool in 2010 and Aston Villa last year – have finished in the play-offs with 54 points or fewer from 37 games. Both went on to get promoted showing how important momentum is going into the end-of-season shootout.

Millwall can’t continue to rely on others to falter, and Friday night showed that they don’t intend to.

There was some surprise when Gary Rowett picked a four-man defence.

Logic would have said a back five, using the pace of Mason Bennett and Jed Wallace on the counter-attack.

But Rowett sensed that Forest were vulnerable on their right side, and Ferguson was key to the Lions boss being able to set his side up in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Ferguson has only started eight of Rowett’s 24 league games, and this was his first since the 0-0 draw with

Sheffield Wednesday on February 1.

It says a lot about him that he never sulks, never slackens off, even when he must feel that he should play more. But when he gets his chance he rarely lets anyone down.

Against Forest he gave Millwall added security in midfield by pushing inside to join Jayson Molumby and Ryan Woods.

Forest found it tough to break through, though early on Joao Carvahlo looked like he could be a scourge as he found little pockets of space.

Ferguson even pinched his own little bit of history as it was his corner, hefted to the back post, that invited Smith to bag the match ball and the man-of-thematch award.

Bennett’s role was to drift wide of one of Forest’s defensive midfielders, Ben Watson, usually down the left where right-back Matty Cash was often exposed. For the first goal, Bennett found Murray Wallace who superbly cut back inside Watson, who was having to cover his full-back, before crossing on

his weaker right-foot for Smith to stoop and head in.

Then Bennett went outside the other Forest central midfielder, Alfa Semedo, to fire in a low cross and when Molumby connected with it even the PA at the City Ground announced it as his goal, what would have been a first in his 33rd game for the Lions. But replays showed the ball had flicked off the inside of Smith’s right boot and he was on a hat-trick.

He completed it 33 minutes in, to the disbelief of the home fans. Lions supporters sang, ‘There’s only one Gary Rowett'.

The second half was more about containment, particularly as Bennett tired and Forest showed more desperation.

Carvalho shot from distance but Shaun Hutchinson produced a defensive masterclass, with Jake Cooper not far behind. The pair contributed countless headers away and interceptions.

Outside them, Wallace and Mahlon Romeo were watchful sentries.

Bart Bialkowski was only really called into action twice, batting away longdistance efforts from John Bostock.

Smith’s first-half demolition job had been enough.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BILLY MITCHELL admitted his new long-term Millwall contract gives him “peace of mind” – as he immediately set his sights on claiming a regular first-team place next season.

Mitchell, 18, had a one-year contract that was due to expire in the summer, though given the positive impression he has made this season it was a formality the club would secure the future of the boyhood Lion.

Millwall manager Gary Rowett rates him highly, and Mitchell has impressed with his attitude, his hard work and diligence on the training ground, and with his performances in three cup starts this campaign.

The club doesn’t disclose contract lengths, but Mitchell's is at least two years with further clauses.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” Mitchell told the News. “I only had a one-yearcontract which was ending in June. So to sign a new one gives me real peace of mind and a sense of security.

“Millwall is the club I want to be at, they’ve been great to me so far and I really hope that, depending on our situation at the end of the season, I can

grab a couple of games.

“Next year I want to really push for a spot in the team, that’s ultimately where I want to be.

“I’ve been giving everything I’ve got in training. I’ve had a few talks with the gaffer and he’s told me to be patient, bide my time.

“I feel like I’ve done well enough to earn a new contract and I hope that I can prove my worth next season. I really think I can add something to this team.

“I’ve been taking my time this season to observe players like Jayson [Molumby] and Willo [Shaun Williams] to try and learn as much as possible.

When I do break into the first team I want to be as comfortable as possible around the other lads.”

Rowett said that he noticed Mitchell’s confidence grow after he started against Premier League Sheffield United in the FA Cup. “Yeah, definitely,” Mitchell agreed.

“I’ve always been comfortable with the lads but once you’ve played a few games there’s just a different level of acceptance.

“It has improved my confidence and I feel like I’m going to grow and get better each week. I want to keep myself fit in the summer, come back raring to go in pre-season and see where that takes me.”

Young midfielder on his new contract – and why he felt squad might be capable of something special There was some suggestion Mitchell could have been loaned out in January, but a combination of injuries to midfielders Ryan Leonard and Ben Thompson, and no suitable club coming in for him, meant he stayed put.

Mitchell continued: “It was a tough situation because there were a couple of injuries in the team which meant that I was only one step away from actually playing.

“It didn’t quite work out like that and a loan would have been a good option.

If I’m honest, I’m glad I stayed around at Millwall just because of how well

we’re doing. It’s a great experience, I’m picking up things every single week.

“It’s a great changing room to be a part of.”

Has Mitchell celebrated his new deal?

“I said this to my family the other day, you need to take the time to celebrate these moments because they don’t come along too often,” he added. “Sometimes when you’re involved and you hear of people getting new contracts all the time, you don’t tend to take the time to consider how big a thing it is.

“I think it means I can get my head back on the football more than worrying about the contract side of things. That’s what I want to do, just play as well as I can.”

If the Lions can keep up their playoff challenge, then the likelihood of Mitchell getting more first-team action is reduced as Rowett will lean on experience.

But that doesn’t mean he can’t enjoy the thrill of the ride, and stunning games such as the 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground last Friday.

“I thought it was a fantastic performance,” Mitchell said. “It was my first visit to that stadium, actually, I’ve wanted to go there for a while. It’s certainly going to be memorable.

“The boys were outstanding first half.

The second half the boys were under a bit more pressure but they defended

excellently. From about midway through the first half I always believed we were going to win that one. We’re pushing for the play-offs at the minute and every single one of them did themselves justice.”

Millwall take on Derby County this Saturday and are just two points off the play-off places. They were one of the favourites to go down before the start of the season.

Mitchell, however, sensed they might be capable of something special.

“You never know how things are going to pan out, but to be honest, with the quality of the players we’ve got in the dressing room and our team spirit, I really wouldn’t have put anything past us,” Mitchell said.

“I get to see it day-in, day-out, I think this is such a tight group. Obviously I haven’t worked with any other clubs but I hear all the lads who have say it all the time, what a great group it is.

“The fans, the club, we’re in such a great spot at the minute so I wouldn’t be surprised if we could do something big.

“It’s about having great characters. It’s not that there’s just one person, every single player in that dressing room contributes in one way or another.

“We all pull together when times are not so great and when they are we all celebrate and make sure we enjoy those moments. It’s a great place to be.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk YOU WON’T find Jayson Molumby pulling into Millwall’s training ground in a Ferrari or some other flash motor just because he’s signed a new deal with a Premier League club.

The game is rife with stories of young players signing long-term contracts and squandering their cash and their talent.

Molumby last week agreed a deal until 2023 with Brighton and, okay, so he isn’t suddenly a multi-millionaire, but he’s on a lot more than most other 20-year-olds.

They’re not known as trappings for nothing, but there is little to no chance of Molumby getting carried away.

That’s because of his innate determination, and also the club he’s currently at, the club he asked to go to on loan to try and prove himself in the Championship, and ultimately to Brighton.

He has cherished his time with the Lions.

“I absolutely love it here, it’s a special club,” Molumby told the News. “People have the perception of Millwall before coming in that it’s a bit rough or this, that and the other.

“But it’s absolutely unique when you’re inside it. The lads, the feeling around the club is unique, I’ve never experienced a place like it.

“I’ve probably similar traits to what the club’s about. A hard worker who gives everything every game. My determination is quite similar to this club’s. It’s a family club.

“I was at Brighton where they have a £40million training ground, the best of everything. You come somewhere like here and it could be tough to adjust and you think, ‘jeez, I don’t want to be here’.

You might feel you want to be back at Brighton and the big, lovely training ground.

“But what it is here is it’s very grounded, this is what football is. There’s no bullshit.

It’s proper football, hard-working staff and lads, and ordinary people who really want to do well.”

Molumby revealed there are two teammates in particular who have taken it upon themselves to guide him: Jed Wallace and Shaun Williams.

He continued: “You always want to hear from people you trust, and I always say Jed and Willo are the main two people with me. They’re very honest and open

with me. When I come off the pitch and I’ve had a good game the first two people over to me will be Jed and Willo. If I come off after having a bad game they’ll be first to me as well and say, ‘not good enough’.

“They do it in such a helpful and positive way where they just want the best for me and to get the best from me. They want to improve me as a player, they’re brilliant like that.

“They’re both specific in what they want and in what they think I should do better.

I’d rather them telling me what I need to do rather than saying, ‘well done’ all the time. I’d prefer honesty, and they’ve been really good, they’re really good guys.

“You’re not going to please everyone, you’re never going to be everyone’s cup of tea. At the end of the day if the gaffer and my team-mates are happy with me that’s the main thing.

“The gaffer needs to know the different personalities, and he’s been honest with me as well. He’s given me pointers, what he wants more of, what I need to improve. I’m trying to do that for him but for myself as well to try to get better.

“There have been games when I’ve been way off it and coming off the pitch thinking, ‘there’s a level and I was nowhere near it today’. I’ve had games where I’ve not been good enough.

“The hardest thing is probably mentally.

I think I’m alright now getting myself mentally ready for games. When you have three games a week you have to get yourself up for them and go again and go again and go again. It’s a lot to get yourself mentally ready and physically ready for what’s coming.

“Maybe the first few games when I had a run of three or four on the bounce I found it a bit tough, but now I’ve learned a lot and feel like I’m ready for every game.”

The only thing missing from Molumby’s game – or the 33 of them he has played this season – is a goal.

He thought he had broken the barren run with the second at Nottingham Forest last Friday, only for Matt Smith’s big foot to get in the way and get the last

touch.

Molumby hadn’t seen that, and celebrated with a rehearsed dance, an injoke with his team-mates that he refused to reveal the story behind.

“It was a just a bit of banter between the boys,” he said. “I was waiting a while.

The boys said just before going out, ‘if you score you have to do that dance’. So I said I would. It’s just a little dance between us, I can’t give too much away. When I scored it was in my head straightaway.

“I just saw the ball hit the back of the net and I thought it was my goal, but it wasn’t meant to be.

“I was delighted for [Smith] because he’s won a lot of points for us this year.

He’s come on and scored in games, he’s been brilliant and he deserved it, to be fair.”

Molumby is certainly deserving of his new contract with the Seagulls, after battling back from a year out injured in his late teens to impressing so much at Millwall.

But Republic of Ireland under-21 midfielder Molumby has no plans for any extravagant purchases.

He joked: “To be honest, I’m not sure I’m at that level where I can buy all these things!

“I want to look after myself and do the right things, from a financial and mental point of view and not get into anything I shouldn’t.

“I’m really happy to extend my stay there because I’ve been there since I was fifteen. I’ve got a lot of people I’m close to there as well.

“The security [of the contract] is brilliant and I want to try and go and impress the gaffer during pre-season. If not then I’ll look at something else.”

It’s put to Molumby that, as things stand, Brighton could get relegated and Millwall could win promotion to the Premier League this season, but he won’t be drawn into saying where that would leave his thinking in the summer.

“Hopefully Brighton stay up and Millwall go up,” he smiles.

Q: What was the reaction of Derby fans when it was announced that Wayne Rooney was signing, and what has his impact been?

A: Pretty much like it was for everybody in football - surprise, disbelief. I was sat in the press room at Huddersfield for the opening fixture of the season in August when I first heard and a follow-up call confirmed it!

Wayne Rooney has been hugely influential on and off the pitch, and especially for the young players who will gain invaluable experience playing and training alongside the former England captain.

Rooney had been ever-present in fifteen matches before he missed the last game through injury.

Q: Did any supporters raise concerns about connection to the 32Red betting company?

Some did, yes, others didn't.

Football is about opinion and so opinions are expected on all topics.

Most of the talk since he has been in the team has been very much about his contribution on the pitch - his performances, his goals, his influence.

Q: He’s played up front and in midfield – where has he been most effective and, if fit, where is he likely

to play Saturday?

A: He has played in a number of positions, and he has the ability, the know-how and awareness to do that but his best performances have come as a deep-lying midfielder in a 4-2-3-1.

His knowledge of the game and the experience he has gleaned by playing at the highest level is evident. That is why he wants to move into coaching and management once his playing

Q: Is boss Phillip Cocu over or underperforming with this squad, and is top six realistically still on?

A: Phillip Cocu deserves praise for the job he has done, all things considered.

He has had to deal with problems off the pitch as well as on the pitch, and the first half of the season was a real struggle.

Since Christmas, however, Derby have been one of the form teams in the division. Can they still make the top six? They would have to go on an unbelievable run and the odds are stacked against it happening, but nothing can be ruled out in the Championship.

Q: How do Derby fans view Gary Rowett and the job he did?

A: Gary Rowett's decision to leave Derby and become Stoke City manager did not go down well with some fans, but there is also recognition of the job he did in 2017-18 when he guided Derby to the Championship play-offs where they faced the best side in the play-offs, Fulham, and lost 2-1 on aggregate.

Q: Finally, likely line-up and score prediction?

A: Skipper Rooney could be available after injury, as could Tom Lawrence, who has been in good form. Derby could go: 4-2-3-1: Hamer; Bogle, Wisdom, Clarke, Forsyth; Bird, Rooney; Waghorn, Sibley, Lawrence; Martin.

As for a prediction? I'll go 2-1 Derby, but I'm sure Gary (Rowett) will tell you my predictions are never right!

Boss pays ‘huge compliment’ to big-game Fergie

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett has heaped the praise on Shane Ferguson ahead of this Saturday’s Championship clash with Derby at The Den.

Ferguson started for the first time since February 1 at Nottingham Forest last Friday and provided the assist for Matt Smith to complete his hat-trick.

Rowett believes Ferguson is a biggame player.

“He understands the game tactically and that’s why we’ve tended to play him, particularly in the home games when we’ve played 4-2-3-1,” Rowett said.

“He manages that side of the pitch really well, he tucks in well, he knows when to try and press, when to drop off.

“We felt that was an area against Forest if we had someone that side that tactically understood the game in a really controlled way that he would get us into better positions. It worked out like that.

“Fergie’s always been the same, every time I’ve asked him to do something

he’s performed really well, whether it’s wing-back or left wing.

“The challenge he’s had is the same as some of the other players. If you’re going to play in some of those front positions, ideally you have to set up and score goals. That’s something I know Fergie has done in the past and in his career but hasn’t done that early in this season.

“What he has done is performed really well for the team. That’s the type of guy he is. He doesn’t give you any problems, he just trains really well every day. He’s a really good character.

“And I think it’s a huge compliment to him that when we need the right player at the right time for a big game, he’s the one we look to.

“I’m sure he’ll be a bit disappointed he hasn’t played more, but again you’re searching for answers and sometimes you go back to something that’s worked previously.

“He has shown how effective he can be.”

Meanwhile, Ben Thompson has suffered a setback in his attempts to recover from an ankle ligament injury that has kept him out since December.

But there was better news concerning Ryan Leonard, who could boost the Lions’ midfield options after he played 60 minutes for the under-23s in their 0-0 draw at Coventry on Monday. Shaun Williams should also be available.

Mason Bennett can’t play against his former club, so Rowett must decide who plays on the left side of the attack.

As well as Ferguson, Connor Mahoney and Aiden O’Brien are the most likely options. Jon Dadi Bodvarsson will come into the equation if it is a 5-2-3 formation.

Derby’s Wayne Rooney and Tom Lawrence missed the 3-0 win at home to Blackburn last weekend, but both are expected to be available at The Den.

Rooney is expected to recover from a muscle injury that kept him out of the Rams’ 3-0 win over Blackburn last Saturday.

The 34-year-old is England’s record goal-scorer with 53 in 120 caps, and Manchester United’s after he overtook Bobby Charlton to finish with 253 goals in 559 appearances.

The former England captain has four goals in twelve games for Derby this

season.

Lions boss Gary Rowett is aware not just of Rooney’s ability to dictate a game, but of a number of attacking threats his former side possesses.

“I’d expect Rooney and Tom Lawrence to play,” Rowett said. “I think it showed how much Derby have come on this season because they still won the Blackburn game with quite a few young players and performed really well at home.

“I know everyone highlights Rooney because of his experience and the topdrawer player he’s been and still is in a different way in the Championship.

“He certainly affects the game, the results have shown that since he joined.

He’s had a big effect probably off the pitch as well as on the pitch. I’m sure that some of the younger players in particular are learning from him and

feel like they need to up their game because he’s around.

“We’ll focus on how to stop Derby’s strengths and that might include Wayne Rooney, but it might also include Tom Lawrence, Martyn Waghorn, Chris Martin. They have a lot of players that we need to think about how do we nullify, or how we nullify their attacking threat.

“They’re a good side and have proved over the last ten or fifteen games they’re one of the form sides in the division.

“So we won’t highlight it too much, but, listen, people don’t need to be made aware of Rooney, because they know what a top-class player he’s been.

“We’re not going to be standing off him and allowing him to do what he wants just because of his career, we have to treat him like everyone else.

If we give him time and space he’s got

the execution, the delivery and the appreciation to be able to hurt any team.

“We’re mindful of that.”

Meanwhile, Billy Mitchell and Mahlon Romeo agreed long-term deals this week. Talks are ongoing with other squad members.

Rowett added: “It’s something we want to do. Some we can make decisions on early, some a little bit later. Ultimately we want to finish the season with a good idea of the squad that’s going to start next season.

“Particularly the young players that have potential and value, they are ones we want to tie down for longer.

“The likes of Mahlon – and Billy in different ways – he’s only 24 so it would be stupid to allow those contracts to run down. There would be a lot of clubs interested in signing those players.”

Marinakis confirmed the news on Instagram and added that he had begun a period of self-isolation.

The Forest supremo was at the City Ground last Friday night where he came into contact with several Millwall board members.

Millwall confirmed on Tuesday that executive club representatives had also gone into self-isolation.

Manchester City’s scheduled Premier League clash against Arsenal on Wednesday night was postponed.

But, at the time of going to press, there were no plans to call off this weekend’s second-tier fixtures, including Millwall's Den game against Derby.

In a statement, the EFL said they “[remained] in close contact with Nottingham Forest after it was revealed owner Evangelos Marinakis had tested positive for COVID-19 (aka Coronavirus).

“The League is in dialogue to fully ascertain the set of circumstances that existed when Mr Marinakis visited the Club last week and in conjunction with the Club will make a determination on what measures are to be taken - if any when full details are known.

“We understand the Club is taking the appropriate steps to mitigate risk in line with relevant guidance provided by the health authorities.

“The Government guidance remains unchanged on the position of EFL matches taking place as scheduled.”
