According to government data analysed

by Southwark Council, eighteen secondary school pupils were permanently excluded in 2014/2015, a figure which had leapt to 47 in the school year ending in 2018 Taking into account growing pupil numbers, the rate of permanent exclusions still shows a sharp increase in the last three years after a previous decline.

Data shows in the academic year 2012/13 the borough’s secondary school exclusion rate was 0.17. In the academic year ending in 2018 the same figure was a rate of 0.29.

gang crime and as those finding themselves outside mainstream education are vulnerable to groomers. It also has long-term consequences for their education and future attainment in life.

As the News has reported, Southwark Council has urged families affected by exclusions to share their experiences as part of its ongoing commission into the issue.

The vast majority of permanent exclusions involve secondary-age children. In the school year ending in 2018, out of all 49 children permanently excluded, just two were Southwark primary pupils.

Listed reasons included physical assaults against other pupils (in eleven cases) or against adults (in six), persistent disruptive behaviour, verbal abuse and threatening behaviour, and drugs and alcohol also feature.

Fifteen cases are listed as “other”.

Heroic crowd lift a bus off woman on the Old Kent Road

Footage circulating online shows several rushing to the woman’s aid after the incident on the morning of Monday, February 3.

A group of good Samaritans crouched down and lifted the vehicle, with one man calling out encouragement: “Boys, come on.

One, two, three. One more – pull.”

They were able to lift the bus high enough to pull the woman from underneath as paramedics arrived take her to hospital.

The woman is believed to be in her 40s and said to not have life-changing or threatening injuries. It is believed she sustained her injuries when she fainted and fell directly

into the oncoming vehicle.

TfL’s head of business development, Tom Cunningham, said: “The bus driver reacted extremely quickly in a distressing situation and immediately contacted our control centre to ensure the emergency services attended as soon as possible.

“We are seeking to contact the woman involved to offer any support that may be given through our Sarah Hope Line, which is designed to assist victims of serious incidents on the transport network.”

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed: “We were called at 9:37am on February 3 to reports of a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian.

“We sent an ambulance crew, an incident response officer, an advanced paramedic and two medics in cars to the scene.

“We treated a woman at the scene and took her to a major trauma centre.”

Stats reveal that over 200 council homes are ‘serious health hazards’

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk More than two hundred Southwark Council homes have serious health and safety hazards, new stats reveal.

229 homes were listed as having ‘Category One’ hazards under the law in the government’s latest collection of data on council housing across the country, published last month.

This is the second highest in London, but well behind neighbouring Lambeth which recorded more than four thousand hazards.

These hazards are those deemed to be serious and immediate risks to health and safety. Council officials said the stats were mainly recording homes on the Ledbury Estate, which has structural issues.

The data, which covers the year 2018-9, takes into account a large range of indicators about the numbers and condition of council housing stock.

Among them are the number of homes

deemed to be “non-decent dwellings.”

Southwark recorded more than 3,100 homes as ‘non-decent’ in March last year, the snapshot date – all of which were housing council tenants.

However, ‘non-decent’ homes accounted for less than ten per cent of the Council’s housing stock.

The data also states that just one Southwark Council property did not have “reasonable degree of thermal comfort,” despite outages of the district heating system on estates, including on the Aylesbury Estate (pictured).

The property is due to have cavity wall insulation installed.

The News contacted the council for comment by did not receive a response at the time of going to press.

Bermondsey Pie n’ Mash duo need help to stage VE party for local pensioners

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A pie ‘n’ mash company needs your help to put on a free VE-day themed bash for two hundred local pensioners at Millwall.

Bermondsey Pie ‘n’ Mash, operating out of the Blue Market for the past two years, is planning on hosting the event at Millwall Community Trust on May 8, the 75th

anniversary of VE Day. As part of the plans, pensioners will be given free traditional pie ‘n’ mash, entertainment from the Cockney Knights, and refreshments.

Volunteers at the event, which is backed by the News, will also be dressed up in period costume.

“We just wanted to give something back to the community,” said Tammy Jukes, who runs the business alongside her husband, Jamie.

Sponsors have already generously donated around £1,400 for the free event to go ahead but more is needed to deck out the hall.

“We’re currently about half-way to our total,” said the co-founder.

“But we still need more to make this event as fantastic as we would like it to be.”

The company behind the factory, which is now an off-West End theatre venue, has until April to remedy the breaches identified by the London Fire Brigade.

Among the fire failings identified in an enforcement notice served last month were “failure to provide a suitable method of giving warning in case of fire.”

josh@southwarknews.co.uk The tally of UK coronavirus cases had reached eight as the News went to press, with several of those being treated at Guy’s and St Thomas’.

It comes after the Department of Health declared a “serious and imminent threat” to public health from the virus.

The status means that those thought to have the virus can be kept in quarantine for longer.

Among those patients being treated at the hospital is businessman Steve Walsh, who has been linked to other cases of the virus.

“I would like to thank the NHS for their help and care. Whilst I have fully recovered, my thoughts are with others who have contracted coronavirus,” said the 53-year-old in a statement to media while in quarantine at St Thomas’ on Tuesday.

“When the diagnosis was confirmed I was sent to an isolation unit in hospital, where I remain, and, as a precaution, my family was also asked to isolate themselves.”

Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty has said that the NHS was “is extremely well prepared to manage these cases and treat them.”

“Four further patients in England have tested positive for novel coronavirus, bringing the total number of cases in the UK to eight,” he said this week.

“The new cases are all known contacts of a previously confirmed UK case, and the virus was passed on in France.

“Experts at Public Health England continue to work hard tracing patient contacts from the UK cases. They successfully identified these individuals and ensured the appropriate support was provided.

“The patients have been transferred to specialist NHS centres at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and The Royal Free hospitals, and we are now using robust infection control measures to prevent further spread of the virus.”

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust is one of two specialist centres in London for treating conditions like the coronavirus.

As reported, Trust officials have previously declared that it is prepared for cases of coronavirus.

The building housing the theatre dates back to 1870 and was the London home of the Menier Chocolate Company, which began manufacturing chocolate for medicinal purposes.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters tackled the blaze on Cerise Road from 3.53pm until it was brought under control by 5.16pm. A small area of a ground floor car park adjacent to the venue was damaged.

One person was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital.

There were no further reports of any injuries.

Witnesses initially reported hearing an “explosion”. Police told the News that the fire is believed to have been started by a mechanical fault in a parked car, though investigations into the cause are still taking place.

In an official statement issued on Monday, a Peckham Levels spokesperson said: “There was a small fire in the car-park next to Peckham Levels.

“The fire was external to the building and was quickly extinguished by the local fire brigade.

“The building was evacuated quickly and there are no injuries or casualties to report.

“No significant damage to the building has been reported.

Man attacked lone woman twice stalked three other lone women.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A man police describe as a "manipulative sexual predator" has been convicted for a terrifying sexual assault in Walworth - the same night he is said to have

William Gordon, from Churchyard Row near Elephant and Castle, was found guilty of one count of sexual assault, four counts of assault by penetration, and two counts of common assault by beating.

He was convicted after a six-day trial at the Old Bailey after refusing to admit his guilt to police; forcing his victim and witnesses to go through a full trial. He will be sentenced at a later date.

The court heard that at quarter-pastmidnight on Tuesday, August 6 last year, Gordon (aged 34) followed a woman as she walked from Larcom Street to Charleston Street, off the Walworth Road.

He then sexually assaulted her for the first time, before she managed to run away. It is said that Gordon then chased her into Cotham Street and continued to assault her.

The jury was told that throughout the terrifying attack, the victim screamed for help and tried to fight him off and that her cries alerted residents to the attack, who called 999. Gordon is then said to

have fled the scene. He was identified after a media appeal was circulated including by the News.

Gordon was arrested on Tuesday, August 20 2019, and denied any wrongdoing. But the investigation later established he had followed three other lone women the same night before he attacked. Police said he had also followed another woman a week earlier.

Sharon Steel, central south's Detective Inspector, said: "At every opportunity Gordon has failed to acknowledge any wrong-doing and has instead chosen to put both the victim and witnesses in this case through a full trial.

“William Gordon is a manipulative sexual predator who poses a serious danger to women and today the jury have rightfully convicted him.

"That night he was clearly targeting lone women before he carried out this prolonged attack.

“I would especially like to commend the bravery of the victim in this case, she has helped to make sure that this dangerous offender has been rightfully convicted on all seven counts.”

Flagpole victory for linda and her late hubby peter Council u-turn after reader backlash

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Rotherhithe resident who was allegedly told to take down her St George’s flag after a neighbour complained is proudly flying it again after a council U-turn.

Linda Donovan, 66, was informed that a flagpole in her back garden, installed by her late husband Peter, was too tall as it breached a fifteen foot limit.

She had also allegedly been told to take down her St George’s flag on the pole by a council officer because it could only be flown for special sporting occasions.

But after her story was featured in the News and sparked a backlash among this paper’s readers, Linda can now fly the flag at its full height.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic, I cried my eyes out when I found out, I really did,” she said. “It was something my husband liked, and it made him feel proud to be British.

“We’ve put the flag pole back up

because now we’re allowed to fly it.”

A letter send to the Donovan family by a council official states that “the final height is acceptable.”

Planning officials said they could find no record that permission had ever been granted for the pole, but since it has been up for more than two decades “our planning team have agreed no enforcement will take place on their end.”

This reverses a previous decision in which Mrs Donovan was told to take the flagpole down to fifteen feet at her own cost, or face a court injunction following the neighbour’s complaint.

Readers backed Mrs Donovan, with many writing messages of support to the News. Other residents of the Rotherhithe street where she lives have also given their backing for the flag to fly, she says.

“The people who are in there [her neighbour’s tenants] they even came out and gave me a thumbs up,” she said. “They don’t mind at all.”

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A spate of car break-ins and vandalism has left East Dulwich motorists with costly insurance headaches.

It’s a hot topic on the East Dulwich Forum website, where frustrated residents are warning others of the continuing spate of crimes.

A car on Oglander Road had its window smashed in with just a pair of trainers stolen on January 24. On the same night, another car was broken into.

Writing under the name Soylent Green, the victim replied saying: “Mine was also done on the same night. Again, the value of the items taken was far less than the £75 insurance excess I had to pay to get the window fixed”.

Other similar reported cases include cars on East Dulwich Grove, Felbrigg Road, Cyrena Road, Hindmans Road, Heber Road, Trossachs Road, Ondine Road and Tell Grove since the end of January.

Some had property stolen from inside but others have reportedly just been vandalised. More than 20 separate

vehicles appear to have been damaged since the beginning of the year.

The attacks appear to be spreading further with areas of Dulwich and Herne Hill affected including Casino Avenue, where four vehicles were broken into last weekend.

On February 2, the local police team confirmed it had upped its foot and mobile patrols in the area, both in plain clothes and uniform, after a ‘high number of car break ins’.

Officers urge anyone witnessing people acting suspiciously around cars in the area to call 999.

When they attempted to intervene, 'the car drove away from the scene and collided with two officers" police said.

The female officer was taken to hospital for treatment for a leg injury and the male officer for an arm injury.

Police said the moped was ridden away from the scene, but was traced to address in nearby Camilla Road, behind Iceland supermarket.

They have arrested one male on suspicion of GBH. They added: “A firearm, believed to be an airpowered pistol – was discovered during a search of the address."

Police enquiries into the circumstances continue and they are still trying to trace the car.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A charity helping disabled people try out new sports with specialist coaching has been awarded £15,000 from Tesco to celebrate the supermarket’s centenary.

Disability Sports Coach was chosen

by Tesco customers in Southwark who voted in favour of their favourite community projects. It is one of £200,000-worth of grants given out around the country to celebrate Tesco turning 100.

The charity provides specialist sports coaching, and also helps train coaches. Its community clubs, including in Southwark, help bring disabled sports fans together in a supportive environment.

Disability Sports Coach’s fundraising manager, Amardeep Gill, said: “With the support of the Tesco Bags of Help Centenary Grant, we will empower disabled children and adults across London through

inspiring Sports Days in the run-up to the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, giving them the same opportunities as others to enjoy sports, improve health and feel part of the community.”

One of the events, held in January this year, saw 60 people playing badminton; tennis; basketball; polybat, a disability sport played with a bat and ball, and boccia; a Paralympic sport described as being most similar to bowls. Their next event, the South Club Games, will be held in Elephant and Castle on February 19.

concerns over ALLEGED attacks in SE15 and se22

By Kit Heren news@southwarknews.co.uk A Southwark blacksmith is seeking donations to turn a piece of local history into a work of art.

Kevin Boys, who runs a workshop in Surrey Docks city farm, in Rotherhithe, wants to use parts from the red crane that stood in nearby Odessa Street to make a new seven-metre sculpture.

The crane, a Scotch derrick, was taken down to make way for new housing in 2017. The crane was the last of its kind in London.

Developers Hollybrook Homes have given £30,000, but Boys needs another £50,000 to fund the project fully.

Boys said: “I wanted to make this sculpture because I think it’s really important to keep in touch with our local history. It was a shame that the crane had to come down originally

and keeping a link with it should help people feel a sense of connection to the place they live.”

As part of the making of the sculpture, Boys will invite local schoolchildren and volunteers to take part in blacksmithing workshops. Boys and his team are also discussing putting the initials of everyone who takes part in making the sculpture on the rivets that will hold the piece together.

Boys said: “The idea of getting local people involved in the sculpture is to give people a sense of ownership. Once you’ve made something, especially something as special as this will be, you tend to get quite protective of it and it gets absorbed into the local community.”

Boys has made several public artworks in London, including the Bermondsey Lion in the Blue Market and a sculpture of able seaman Albert McKenzie on Tower Bridge Road.

Met tells News it cannot ‘waste time’ on ‘non serious’ crimes after enquiry

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Peckham and East Dulwich residents are increasingly concerned by a series of alleged random attacks over the last two weeks - including a woman who reportedly had hot coffee thrown in her face.

One woman, who asked not to be named by the News, called 999 at 10.28 am on Sunday, February 2, from the children's playground in Peckham Rye Park when her friend was violently pushed over by an unknown man, it is alleged.

After the alleged attack, he carried on walking in the direction of the cafe, where the two friends then said they witnessed him put a man in a headlock, before chasing a mother with small children, and shouting at and pushing other members of the public.

Several other people have reported similar alleged incidents from the same area on the East Dulwich Forum website, which they believe involved the same individual.

One forum poster claimed their partner was threatened and pushed in front of their children around the same time on Sunday, near the park toilets, while several others said the behaviour matched that of

a man frequently seen near Alleyn’s, JAGs and the Charter School East Dulwich in the afternoon by residents.

Another local alleged he encountered a man "shouting and swinging his fists" on East Dulwich Grove at 3pm on Monday, February 3, who then started throwing things at people.

The News has also been informed that last Wednesday (February 5), in broad daylight, a man allegedly threw hot coffee in a woman's face in Peckham Rye Park.

On the same day, an elderly man was knocked to the ground in the park, it has been claimed.

If the alleged incidents are linked, many locals are concerned the individual needs urgent mental health treatment before someone is seriously injured. But as yet the paper has been unable to confirm any details from police.

A spokesperson from the Met's central press office declined to comment on the reported incidents, saying that it could not “waste time” looking into “non-serious” crimes that did not involve “terror attacks or murders” for this publication.

The News has contacted Southwark police officers directly for comment, and will update once more information is available from the borough commander’s office.

schools go fizz free this month

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Schools across Southwark are going fizz free throughout February to help turnaround the borough’s reputation as having one of the highest rates of childhood obesity.

The challenge, in its third year, has also been taken up by London Mayor Sadiq Khan and schools across the country and as far afield as New Zealand.

Conceived by Southwark Council, it aims to help raise awareness of the high sugar content in fizzy pop and encourage people to make healthier

choices.

Among the schools visited by Southwark Council’s Evelyn Akoto, the cabinet member for public health, is Bermondsey’s Coburg Primary School, where she spoke about hidden sugars and how they affect our health.

“We’re so pleased primary schools around the borough and around the country have taken on the importance of drinking more water,” she said.

“Cola and other drinks can contain up to ten teaspoons of sugar. The total recommended amount of sugar per day is just six teaspoons.

Last Thursday, Townsend Primary School held a special assembly for pupils to learn more about keeping their teeth healthy and why consuming less sugar will benefit their health.

Others to support the campaign include BBC presenters Sue Atkins and Naomi Kennedy and bloggers like Melanie Purnode and John Adams who are sharing their progress on social media using the hashtags #FizzFreeFebruary and #GoFizzFree.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Lewisham’s Mayor has hailed “a new vision” for the redevelopment of land surrounding Millwall’s stadium adopted by the council last week.

Plans for the New Bermondsey redevelopment of ten hectares of land close to the Den and Surrey Canal Road have previously proved controversial after Lewisham attempted forcibly to buy land near the stadium for developer Renewal’s use.

The move raised fears among fans that the Club could be forced out of the

area. Both the stadium and Millwall Community Trust occupy space at the heart of proposed development site.

Since then, however, the Club, Renewal and council have spoken repeatedly of “positive talks” and a “new approach” to the plans, which would allow Millwall to deliver stadium enhancements.

Strategic objectives at the heart of the plan, adopted by Cabinet, include “to facilitate the future aspirations of Millwall Football Club at the heart of the site.”

“Millwall Football Stadium will be enhanced and expanded to accommodate a larger crowd as the Club seeks promotion to the English Premier

League,” it states.

“The Stadium will sit proudly at the heart of the Development Area welcoming visitors every day to new, up to date conferencing and banqueting facilities.”

“Following positive discussions with Millwall FC and Renewal, we have agreed a new vision for the area around Millwall at Mayor and Cabinet tonight,” said Mayor of Lewisham, Cllr Damien Egan.

“Local residents can now have their say on Renewal’s plans to deliver new homes and new jobs.”

Also included in the plans are proposals for 3,500 new homes, a new

Overground station near Surrey Canal Road and a new indoor sports centre.

However, the council also raised the spectre of compulsory purchase powers for “certain interests” in the site “to acquire and facilitate the delivery of Surrey Canal Triangle as a whole.”

“Ongoing dialogue needs to continue between the principal landowners and those with smaller interests to enable the successful delivery of the regeneration,” add council documents.

A public exhibition to discuss the plans was held at The Thunderdome on Stockholm Road, SE16 3LP on Tuesday 11 February, 4pm – 8pm and will be held on Sunday 16 February, 10am to 2pm.

Labour infighting over GLA selection

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk One of Labour’s GLA candidates shortlisted to stand for Florence Eshalomi’s city hall seat says she has been “taken aback” by the “negativity” from senior Labour figures.

As the News has reported, 90 councillors from the boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth signed an open letter petitioning Labour to rethink its selection of candidates to stand in May’s London Assembly elections.

The list of potential candidates was criticised by borough leaders for not including a single elected and serving councillor from either borough, despite the fact leading black and ethnic minority women made applications, leading to calls it was a “fix” and a “stitch” led by senior Momentum figures.

Moreover, it has been claimed the frontrunner is a male councillor from Wandsworth. Many of those backing the open letter also petitioned for the list to be all-female.

One of the five, Shahina Jaffer (pictured), lives in Bermondsey and is chair of Labour’s South Bermondsey branch. In a statement shared with the News, she

“There has been little acknowledgement, let alone celebration, of my inclusion as a local grassroots member. Their denunciation of the process as a “fix” and a “travesty” has left them no room to celebrate the all-BAME shortlist which is a massive step forward for our community,” she said, describing the selection process as “formal and rigorous”.

“We are lucky to have some really capable and diligent Labour councillors in Lambeth and Southwark. But success as a councillor is not an entitlement to further office, and it would be wrong to think that being a councillor is the only route to City Hall.”

She added: “The negativity directed at me from some quarters presents a real risk that good people with diverse

backgrounds and experience will be deterred from putting themselves forward for GLA candidacy in future.”

Last month the party’s in-fighting hit a new low when MP Neil Coyle appeared to brand her – however indirectly - a “moron”.

The Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP was replying to a tweet from Southwark Council leader Peter John.

In what could be perceived as a thinly veiled dig at Jaffer, who had publicised her support of the protest in the run-up to the meeting, Cllr John tweeted: “If you want to be selected as the Labour candidate by Southwark and Lambeth members for the local GLA seat it’s probably not brilliant politics to be protesting against Southwark Council and our work this evening.”

Jaffer had joined a protest at Tooley Street outside the council’s assembly to lobby for more support for Elephant and Castle traders displaced by the regeneration

project.

Cllr John appeared to be ignoring the fact that several of his own ward councillors are against particulars of the scheme – including those on who were on the planning committee that eventually approved it.

“Surely only a complete moron would do this? You’d have to be high or something?” said Coyle in response.

The Greater London Assembly elections will be held in May. Incumbent member for our boroughs, Florence Eshalomi, will not be standing again for Labour as she was elected to parliament in December as MP for Vauxhall.

The figures presented to the Trust’s board reveals that the Trust’s hospitals admit the most amount of patients sectioned under the Act in the UK, at around 1,500 admissions in a year.

As a proportion of registered population, that figure falls to the third highest in the UK, according to the statistics.

SLaM runs the Maudsley Hospital and Bethlem Royal, among others.

“The causes of SLaM high use of detention is not understood,” states a report presented to board officials, which adds that the “high use of the MHA and the underpinning causes requires priority attention.”

Trust officials told the News they believed part of the cause was the high prevalence of psychosis in south London.

It said south London had the highest prevalence in the world.

“We always work to treat patients in the least restrictive way and to help support their recovery earlier,” said a spokeswoman.

“We are working closely with our local communities to help us identify patients that need our support earlier and to prevent them from having to come into hospital unless it is absolutely necessary.

“This is a priority area for us and we are leading ground breaking research into the causes and treatment for Psychosis and this supports how we can reduce the number of patients being detained under the Mental Health Act.” Also revealed was that only fourteen per cent of people who had been taken by police to a SLaM hospital as a ‘safe place’ while having a mental health crisis in public were then detained and admitted for treatment.

The power, under S.136 of the Mental Health Act, allows officers to take you to a place of safety, such as a hospital or police station for up to 24-hours if they think you have a mental illness.

“It was felt that it was a low proportion of the total and raises the question of the rationale for a large proportion of s136,” the committee said.

£65 MILLION NEW MENTAL HEALTH CENTRE FOR CHILDREN AT THE MAUDSLEY ANNOUNCED

£5.5 million donated by one family foundation towards this ‘once in a lifetime’ project

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A £65 million mental health centre for children and young people has been announced by the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust.

The trust says The Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People will house together leading clinicians from the trust and researchers from King’s to provide specialist treatment.

In a statement sent to the News, the trust explained its ambition for the Pears to “become a national beacon of excellence that will help to transform lives and be the home of world class research” and halve the time it takes to develop new treatments.

Based in Denmark Hill at the Maudsley Hospital, the new building will initially focus on mothers and babies; child trauma; self-harm; attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; obsessive compulsive disorder; autism; depression and digital technologies.

It is believed that around half of all adult mental health problems began before the age of fifteen. Early intervention at the right time can have a huge impact on whether a patient recovers and how they manage their symptoms.

The £65 million project is named after Pears Foundation, which has donated £5.5 million toward the project. Other benefactors include The Rayne Foundation, which donated a “significant sum” in October 2019 to start the fundraiser.

Ten million has been pledged from the Maudsley Charity, and in total more than eighteen million has been committed from other donors. A public fundraising appeal will be launched later in the year.

David Bradley, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust’s chief executive, said: “This is a once in a generation opportunity to transform mental health care and research for children and young people in the UK and beyond.

“We are excited by the possibilities that the new centre can bring in supporting our children and young people and making those breakthroughs in research that will help us to deliver world class care and treatment.

“We are proud that young people have been at the heart of designing the new centre to ensure that we create the best possible environment for them.”

Professor Ian Everall, executive dean of King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience said: “Difficulties in childhood have an effect on adult life so it’s really important to intervene early.

“The centre will provide an ideal home for our team of clinicians and researchers so they can really make an impact on the lives of children and young people into adulthood.

“Our new building is cleverly designed to encourage connections and collaborations which will speed up the time from research to clinical care.”

Students at St Gabriel’s College, in Camberwell, and Walworth’s UAE South Bank took to the stalls as part of Borough Market’s Young Marketeers programme.

The scheme teaches students about food and cookery, with the Market’s own traders advising them how to sell produce. Pupils attended two workshops earlier to teach them how to make soup and ciabatta ahead of the sale day on Tuesday.

Mountview wants a bar with roof view

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Mountview in Peckham wants to turn its roof into a public bar and restaurant – with an extended licence.

The performing arts school already has a licence to serve alcohol outside on its terrace until 10.30pm every day.

Inside it can service until 11.30pm Sunday to Thursday, and until 12.30am

on Fridays and Saturdays.

It now wants to add an extra hour to its outside licence, so it can serve until 11.30pm seven days a week.

A statement explains the bar/ restaurant would be run by the operator of Wapping’s Skylight, at Tobacco Dock, open from May-October.

“We think the activation of the rooftop will be a positive addition to the neighbourhood and make for a safer public realm at night,” a statement

published by Mountview explains.

“We have acoustic measures in place to ensure minimal sound spillage and security plans to make sure guests leave quietly via a special entrance on the walkway between Mountview and the library.”

Anyone living in the area can visit the rooftop to find out more on Monday, February 10, from 5-6pm by visiting Mountview’s reception at the Peckham Square entrance.

Fusion, the gym operator that runs the outdoor swimming pool, is carrying out work to repair the floor and paint the tank. It will close on March 2 and

open in “early May”.

During the repairs all other facilities including the gym and spa will remain open, and members can use any other Fusion pool free of charge. Group exercises classes will also run as normal.

As the News has reported, the upgrade will no longer include fitting a plastic lining after an outcry from swimmers keen to protect the Art Deco building.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk British cruiserweight champion and former Sacred Heart pupil Richard Riakporhe visited the school’s boxing class last week, to continue his campaign to help children make positive choices and stay away from gangs.

Riakporhe, who grew up on the Aylesbury Estate, was crowned British champion in December and was awarded the Lonsdale belt as has been tradition for the last 111 years.

He first boxed at Lynn ABC on Wells Way as a youngster and made his professional debut in 2018.

The 30-year-old is currently in recovery after fracturing his metacarpal, but is intending to be back in the ring this summer. At the school he met pupils from the class of Mr Udebhulu, who runs boxing at the school. He also brought along his WBA intercontinental belt.

Since turning professional, Riakporhe has used his profile to travel to schools across the south-east warning kids away from knife crime and gangs.

It’s a personal cause as he nearly died at fifteen when he was stabbed in the chest. After deciding to change his life and make his parents proud, he went to Kingston University to study marketing communications and

advertising, and continued to box.

Assistant head teacher Luke Williams said: “It is always a pleasure to welcome Richard into school, and he is a great role model.

“Having undergone some tricky times during his teenage years he now regularly speaks in schools about the importance of staying on the right path in life and is passionate about guiding the youth of today in the right direction.

“We wish him all the best as he continues to pursue his dream of eventually becoming world champion.”

“They’ve told me it’s an ongoing situation and they can’t tell me when it’s going to be resolved. In the meantime I’ve just got to sit here and freeze.

“They want me to sit in a fridge at my time of life.”

“We will be working hand in hand with them to explore the options and I will be meeting with ward councillors and Tenants’ and Residents’ Associations members this week to start taking this forward.

“In the meantime we have installed high quality modern temporary boilers in all nine plant rooms on the estate - these have the added advantage of avoiding most of the underground pipes between blocks that have been such a big part of the problem.”

As reported last week, those using pay-as-you-go are left most at risk of spiralling costs – or simply not having the cash in hand to use fan heaters doled out by the council.

Although residents have been told they can shower for free in leisure centres nearby, many elderly or immobile people are left in the lurch.

The centre is one of the council’s strategies to try to reach its target of making sure 100 per cent of young people in the borough receive the mental health support they need. In council briefing papers it is envisaged as looking like a “cross between a Starbucks and Apple store”.

There is a particular gap in provision for those under 25 who do not need specialist mental health care, but do need more support than can be given by schools or their GP. To meet this need, the service will offer support to people with lower level mental health problems that can be managed outside a clinical setting. There will be an open access policy with no prior appointments needed.

The centre is currently being designed

with input from families and young people affected by mental health issues and will be run by Groundwork; an organisation that runs youth projects in Southwark.

Nationally, the borough already has been praised for the breadth of services it offers. A new report from the children’s commissioner, Anne Longfield, looking at children’s mental health services across the country, highlighted that Southwark is one of four areas in the country where more than nine in 10 children who are referred for mental health care actually go on to receive it.

The other four areas are Lambeth, Croydon and Corby, in the midlands.

At the other end of the scale, 10 clinical commissioning groups only go on to treat half of the children referred to them.

“I’m delighted that Anne Longfield, who attended our first meeting of the Commission, has recognised the excellent work taking place in Southwark to support our young people,” said Cllr Jasmine Ali, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for children, schools and adult care.

“But we know that we need to go much further if all our young people are to feel truly supported to enjoy good mental health.

“The new centre in Peckham, which has been designed with young people, will help us take a big step towards our 100 per cent ambition, but it is not the only solution.

“We will continue to work with our partners in health, the voluntary sector and with our schools, until every young person in Southwark has the support they need and deserve.”

Gladys, who now lives in Fairholme Nursing Home in Cambourne in Cornwall, was born on January 22, 1915, in Camberwell’s Dowlas Street.

She moved south-west forty years ago.

Her mother worked at Scotland Yard as a cleaner and her father worked for Camberwell-based papermaking firm Samuel Jones and Co, which made self-adhesives including stamps.

Gladys was one of four sisters; Doreen who sadly died young, Grace who passed away just a few months ago, and Gwen who is still living in Camberwell at the grand age of 99.

Gladys went to school in Southampton Street School and was a regular attendee of exercises classes, but unlike the others she failed to gain her certificates thanks to too much “larking about”. Her favourite activities were dancing and going to

the pictures at Brixton Empress.

She later worked in Oxford Street as a shirt machinist, and joined the auxiliary fire service from 7pm-10pm every night where she answered emergency calls. At the end of her shifts, one of the firemen would drop her home and give her a kiss on the cheek.

Victoria Geddes, the activities coordinator at Fairholme, said: “Gladys has lots of memories of the war. Her mum’s house was bombed and so was hers as they only lived a few doors away from each other. She lost some of her hearing due to it and still hears the noises now.

“One night she had to sleep in Oxford Street station because the sirens were going off. Despite all that she says she has had a lovely life and lives with no regrets”.

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Two Southwark robbers have been jailed for attacking a salesman in a carpark and making off with £4.1million of precious jewellery.

Pals Ciro Troyano, 40, from Elephant and Castle and Oscar Hicks, also from Southwark, must serve sixteen years and fourteen years behind bars for their crimes, which left their victim with long-lasting physical and psychological damage.

Lewisham man Camilo Carvajal, 39, and 48-year-old Lee Jason Gardner,

of Tottenham, were also jailed for seventeen years and eighteen years for their parts in the brutal gang robbery in Staines.

Kingston Crown Court heard how the men set upon the salesman for American celebrity jewellery Le Vian after he’d parked his car on the first level of a carpark at around 8.20am on May 13.

He was opening the boot to take out a suitcase containing the precious jewellery when he was hit with such force he fell to the ground, before being repeatedly punched and kicked.

The gang tore off his watch, fracturing his wrist and lower arm, before making

off with £4.1m-worth of jewellery.

“I was left black and blue all over from the amount of punches and kicks I received. There was no need for these men to have injured me the way they did,” said the victim in a statement.

“I would have handed over what they were demanding without the need for violence.

“I also lost most of my possessions, including my clothes, phone, wallet, ID and passport, and was left stranded in a foreign country with nothing. Now I feel really vulnerable when I travel to the UK.” Footage from the carpark’s number plate scanners captured the gang’s

The family business, which has an outlet on Bermondsey’s Tower Bridge Road, has passed down through four generations of family – and has now been recognised with a Heritage award in the first-ever Food and Drink awards.

“It’s a great result to be recognised and understood as a business that has been here for nearly 120 years,” said director Tom Harrington.

“And hopefully it’s going to be there for another 120 years.”

The business was first founded in 1902 by Michele Manze in Bermondsey, and has been serving pie, mash and liquor for more than a century.

Gardner and Carvajal were arrested after simultaneous raids on their homes on June 25.

Officers say they found a “large quantity of Le Vian jewellery, cash and mobile phones” at Gardner’s place, alongside WhatsApp messages of him trying to sell the jewellery on.

A search of Carvajal’s address uncovered a distinctive Omega pen and pair of Omega sunglasses belonging to the victim.

Meanwhile, Hicks was arrested in July in London after coppers found medication with the victim’s name on it in a bedroom drawer.

“This was a brutal and deliberately targeted attack, reflected in the lengthy sentences handed out to all four men today, who all played their part in pulling off this professionally planned robbery,” said Detective Sergeant Kate Hyder, of Surrey Police.

“Unfortunately, the violence they inflicted on the victim left him extremely traumatised and has had a massive impact on his life. I hope that the fact that these men are now behind bars will provide him with some form of closure and help him move on with his life.”

The plates had been stolen earlier that week from a Lambeth car.

Using CCTV footage and witness statements, police were able to piece together the car’s journey in and out of Staines, alongside the four men going to-and-from the car prior to the robbery.

They also found out that the car had been previously registered to Carvajal’s partner, and a blue Ford Fiesta travelling in convoy with the Mercedes belonged to Gardner.

Troyano had travelled to Maidenhead on 12 May 2019, the day before the robbery, where the victim was displaying the Le Vian range at an Ernest Jones store, it was discovered.

Footage also showed that Gardner had travelled to Staines-upon-Thames on the same day to carry out a reconnaissance visit of the car park where the robbery took place.

Troyano was arrested in London in June and a search uncovered a phone, later confirmed as being the same one used during the offence.

Michele’s grandson, Rick, is still involved in the business alongside his daughter Emma and her husband Tom. Since the awards were announced on TV on Sunday night, the business has been inundated with messages – with even its website going down due to visitors.

But the business, which also has outlets in Peckham and Sutton, has had to keep the secret since Christmas, as this is when filming took place.

“We got nominated based on our history,” explained Tom. “I don’t know if it was one of our regulars, but then they [ITV] came in and did a mystery shop. They came in just before Christmas and they tried the food and spoke to the staff, and then they let us know we’d won one of the awards. It’s an exciting thing to have, some people were aware but it’s nice that everyone can be aware of it now.”

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A probe is ongoing into a council’s care of Jonty Bravery, the teen who attempted to murder a young boy by throwing him 100 feet from the Tate Modern.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council was legally responsible for the care of Bravery , now eighteen, who threw a six-year-old boy ten floors from the Tate’s viewing platform in August.

The boy is still unable to stand or walk and cannot eat solid foods after sustaining horrific injuries in the fall.

A recording emerged last week which appeared to show the attacker

telling his carers that he would like to throw someone to their death off a tall building such as the Shard a year before the Tate Modern incident.

His care provider, Spencer & Arlington, told the BBC and Daily Mail which obtained the recording that it had no record or knowledge of Bravery telling his carers of his murder plans.

It also insisted that there was absolutely no evidence that he may have told carers of his plan beforehand.

However, it added that it recognised the gravity of the claim and had referred it onto the Care Quality Commission for investigation.

A spokesperson for Hammersmith and Fulham Council said: “Our

sympathies go out to the child and his family following what happened at Tate Modern.

“An independent serious case review is now underway. It will look at what happened and the role played by all the different agencies involved.”

A voice in the recording, reported to be that of Bravery’s, says: “In the next few months I’ve got it in my head I’ve got to kill somebody.”

It adds: “I know for a fact they’ll die from falling.”

Bravery, from Ealing, admitted attempted murder in December and he is due to be sentenced next week.

The serious case review is expected to publish its findings later this year.

Why I #loveMyNHS

years it is always inspiring to read these messages. A few things strike me about them, including the range of ways that the NHS makes a difference - often it is lifesaving emergency surgery or cancer treatment but it is also things like simpler, but no less important, interventions on mental health and being treated with dignity and compassion.

This got me thinking about the reasons why I #loveMyNHS. I am extremely fortunate to work with so many talented and dedicated people.

This not only includes other doctors, nurses and frontline colleagues like paramedics and pharmacists; but administrators and commissioners, like the ones I work with at my GP practice and at the CCG every day.

They are all experts in their fields and they are totally committed to their patients, their communities,

and the good health of both; and we all benefit from their dedication to going that extra mile.

The NHS in Southwark draws its staff from all over the world and reflects the diversity of the communities it serves. The fact that we are able to attract so much talent from around the world speaks to the core values of the NHS. These are in fact written in the NHS constitution as: working together for patients, respect and dignity, commitment to quality of care, compassion, improving lives and that everyone counts.

I see these values every day and I encourage all of you this month to share your stories using the #loveMyNHS hashtag because knowing they are making a difference means a lot to the tireless staff who keep the NHS going.

his week we’ve seen further evidence of the practical reality of the climate emergency in the shape of Storm Ciara.

The impact in London has mainly been limited to fallen trees and branches, but we’ve once again seen many other parts of the country hit by extensive flooding with all of the misery and cost that it causes for local communities affected.

Last Saturday I was delighted to speak at the Dulwich and West Norwood Climate Coalition ‘Speak Up for the Climate’ event in Herne Hill, a group that I helped to set up in 2015 in the run up to the Paris Climate Summit that year.

The group subsequently organised a series of annual community meetings on climate change, and Saturday’s event was certainly the best ever, with a fantastic range of talks and community organisations offering practical advice.

The strength and depth of community engagement in my constituency is inspiring, but we also need more leadership and commitment from the government, which continues to subsidise fossil fuel industries and is yet to publish detailed plans for the scale of change we need in order to deliver the urgent reduction in carbon emissions the climate emergency demands.

Lambeth and Southwark Councils were both among the first to declare a climate emergency and are developing their detailed plans to deliver against

this commitment. Both Councils have recently published plans to make local streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists and improve air quality in parts of my constituency.

It was great to see around 200 local residents at a packed meeting on Saturday morning to discuss Southwark Council’s Our Healthy Streets Dulwich consultation.

The council is proposing possible changes to streets in the Dulwich area to tackle the incredibly high level of air pollution at key junctions that impact so negatively on children and older residents in particular, reduce rat-running traffic and improve safety.

Lambeth Council is currently consulting on changes to Rosendale Road here: and in the Railton Road area here: with the same objectives of improving air quality, encouraging walking and cycling by making the streets safer.

Both the climate emergency and our air pollution crisis mean that we cannot just maintain the status quo. Whatever your views, I hope you will engage positively with these proposals and submit your feedback – it’s only by working together that we’ll see the change we need.

No complete poll of swimmers was ever taken. Ironically the paint option contains plastic, as admitted by Fusion.

The underwater lighting promised at these consultations has now been conveniently forgotten and the possibility of a bigger sauna (badly needed) has also been ruled out. Swimmers are highly sceptical that the work will be completed by ‘mid-May’ and wondering where all the original budget has gone?

But some visitors to the popular attraction have been leaving reviews on TripAdvisor that it is simply too tall.

I'm really sad for the people who have died in that spot but there is pedestrian crossings with traffic lights. I mean the one that failed the drug test, yes, outrageous. But a lot of people do not respect the "green man" and just cross whenever they feel like it. I don't see what it's gonna change by reducing the speed aside causing more traffic that is already quite heavy on that road. Maybe people need to take their own responsibility and just be learn to be patient by waiting for the "green man". Just my opinion...

Something needs to be done admittedly, however I do agree with the above comments. People need to be patient and use the crossings provided if you’re going to dart out between buses and other cars etc you are putting your life at risk. Your life is worth a two minute walk to the nearest safe spot to cross, surely.

Dual crossword Exclusions should always be the last resort, but given the amount is that what is really happening?

T

he rate of permanent school exclusions in Southwark has risen sharply in the last few years and is now above both London-wide and national averages. And this does not take into account those who have been ‘off-rolled’.

Permanent exclusions are the answer in the most serious cases. One of the main reasons cited for taking such a strong measure is physical attacks on fellow pupils or adults in school, and persistent disruption.

Keeping pupils safe should always be a priority but exclusions – permanent or for a fixed period – are a last resort.

The decision has huge implications for the student and their families who then have to take on extra childcare struggles and navigate new educational providers or home-schooling.

And those who end up in pupil referral units are known to be particularly vulnerable to gangs and their groomers.

Exclusions are the focus of Southwark Council-led research into the impact on young people currently taking place, in the hope it can find ways to prevent exclusions, and support families going through the experience.

There are however other, no less problematic, ways that children can end up falling through the cracks and these require equal attention, too.

Research by the children’s commissioner, Anne Longfield, from 2018, found that there are tens of thousands of children across the country whom “we cannot be certain are being educated at all”.

Some may be in what is known “alternative provision” or home education, but others have been “off-rolled” – often due to poor performance or by families trying to prevent a likely exclusion from appearing on the pupil’s record.

These are effectively exclusions by the back door, and don’t appear in official statistics – and will be much harder to deal with effectively if they are happening in this borough.

The second instalment of the Union Theatre’s Essential Classics season comes in the form of Lionel Bart’s musical Blitz! and it doesn’t disappoint, writes Rosie O’Connell...

Death of England Is Very Much Alive

Based on Bart’s own experiences of growing up in the East End during the Blitz, the plot revolves around Jewish widow and matriarch Mrs Blitztein (Jessica Martin) who is either worrying about her wayward son Harry (Robbie McArtney) or at odds with her market trader neighbour, Cockney Alf Locke(Michael Martin). From her pickled herring stall and his fruit and veg, they argue about almost anything.

With the harrowing backdrop of 1940s blackout London, this intricate family drama soon develops when Locke’s son Georgie (Connor Carson) falls for Blitztein’s daughter Carol (Caitlin Anderson) and it seems the two families are about to become reluctantly closer.

Rafe is playing Michael, a 39-year-old ‘bloke’ blindsided by grief after the sudden death of his father, trying to make sense of his life. As the title suggests, Death of England explores the nature of Englishness in post-Brexit Britain, a place of disturbingly increased confidence in the racism that shaped Michael’s childhood.

Bananas thud relentlessly onto the stage during a remembered football match. Michael alternates between high energy swagger and incontinent emotion in a portrait of toxic masculinity, a phenomenon described very aptly by Russell Brand in the programme as a “pollutant that has intoxicated us and from which we can be healed” When Michael’s father fades quietly yet shockingly away on his shoulder during a World Cup match, which once again shatters the dreams of English fans, the last chance for the approval Michael

and Carol Blitztein in the charming duet ‘Opposites’, with Anderson’s soprano vocals standing out during ‘Far Away’ in the second half.

Given such a small space, it never ceases to amaze me how well the Union Theatre hosts a full musical. How the cast don’t constantly bump into each other, particularly during the larger numbers such as ‘Who’s This Geezer Hitler’ and ‘Petticoat Lane’, it is a wonder and a credit to the choreography of Daniel Maguire and stage design from Reuben Speed. The entire cast is enthusiastic and energetic throughout, whether they are squashed into a corner of the stage for an air-raid or down The Lane on a busy Sunday.

What all of this culminates in is a fun, well-tuned revival with enough stand out moments from the cast that anywhere that the plot is a little thin is mostly forgivable. For musical fans it is a must see, given that the opportunity to see Blitz! is a rare one.

After the funeral, where the stripped back staging gives way to a fully rendered crematorium and Michael delivers an explosive, invective filled, eulogy, he meets a mysterious stranger who, in a rather improbable plot twist, provides him with a new understanding of his late Dad; more complicated, still tinged with darkness, but ultimately liberating and life affirming.

Rafe Spall’s performance is a thing to behold. An hour and forty minutes of non-stop, high energy delivery. At times he could have slowed down, and given more space to the rich and nuanced writing of Clint Dyer and Roy Williams. These two highly talented black playwrights give voice to the underbelly of English racist subculture with wit and power. The audience was one of the youngest, most diverse I have ever seen. England may be dying but, in their hands, theatre is very much alive.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk This month marks the 70th anniversary of the first successful cataract surgery in the world, an operation carried out by Sir Harold Ridley at St Thomas’ Hospital on February 8, 1950. It is estimated that more than 200 million people’s sight has been saved since.

One of Sir Harold’s early patients, treated in 1956, says still owes his sight to the pioneering ophthalmologist.

Jeffrey Wright, now 80, was given the lens implant operation when he was sixteen-years-old after his right eye had been damaged in an accident while playing darts. The injury led to him developing cataracts; a clouding of the eye’s lens which causes vision loss.

The retired electrical engineer from Milton Keynes remembers: “Initially I was told by my local hospital that I’d never be able to see with my right eye but my mum refused to accept that. We were eventually referred to Sir Harold Ridley at St Thomas’. What he was doing wasn’t widely known about then but he said he could help me.

“By then the lens in my eye had gone opaque and my vision had started to get worse. Once my lens had been removed and the new one was inserted my vision was brilliant – and it stayed that way for 30 years.”

By 1986 the artificial lens had started to rub against Jeffrey’s cornea. It was removed at St Thomas’ and he was given a corneal graft and a set of contact lenses to retain his vision.

“The team was amazed that the lens Sir Harold put in was still there,” he says. “I’ve done very well with my sight for so long. He was a brilliant surgeon. I would have completely lost my vision in my right eye without him.

“It was great my mum pushed for treatment because my life could have been very different without vision in one eye. Sir Harold was a pioneer – now so many people have the operation each day thanks to what he discovered.”

Throughout history there had been various attempts at fixing the common sight problem. Cataracts generally appear in late middle age onward, and are caused by dead cells turning the lens hard and opaque. If untreated they can cause total blindness.

Although removing the lens could allow light back into the eye, the lens is needed for focusing and so to see properly after surgery patients depended on glasses.

And early surgery posed other safety issues.

After successive failures by medics throughout the 1800s and 1900s, it was believed to be an impossible task. The key problem for practitioners was that the eye rejected any foreign object used as a replacement lens.

Sir Harold, who hailed from Kibworth Harcourt in Leicestershire, was the son of a naval surgeon who had later specialised in ophthalmology. Remarkably, as a child he knew Florence Nightingale, a close friend of his mother’s.

Sir Harold’s breakthrough came when he treated a Spitfire pilot who had Perspex stuck in his eye during a stint

working at Moorfield’s Eye Hospital. He realised that unlike most foreign bodies, the eye wasn’t rejecting the material.

During World War Two he was based in Africa as a major in the medical corps, and put his idea of producing Perspex lenses on hold. In the Gold Coast, he also conducted research credited with improving the diagnosis of river blindness – onchocerciasis – caused by tiny worms in the eye.

After his return to England, he turned his attention back to cataracts and took his initiative further with help from a scientist business partner who had the technology to mass produce affordable Perspex lenses.

He began working at St Thomas’s in 1946; the hospital where he first trained as a junior doctor. Three years later became the first doctor to successfully implant an artificial lens in a patient’s eye.

At the time, it was a radical idea and, at first, many people in his profession were concerned. But by the 1950s he was so in demand that he regularly flew out to American to operate in New York and

Washington at weekends.

At his retirement from the NHS in the early 1970s it was still a controversial procedure. But by the 80s it had become routine practice – albeit needing a one centimetre incision, stitches, and a two-week recovery.

After retirement Sir Harold continued working privately in Harley Street, and was eventually vindicated by the profession that had initially doubted him and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1986. He even went on to have the pioneering treatment himself. Sir Harold passed away aged 94 in 2001, a year after receiving a knighthood.

Today this type of surgery is the most common eye operation worldwide.

Technological advancements mean it can be conducted with just a two millimetre incision to insert the lens, which then unfolds within the eye. No stitches are needed and patients go home the same day – with some not needing to wear glasses after.

St Thomas’ hospital carries out more than 50 cataract operations a week, with each one taking just fifteen to 30 minutes. Around 350,000 are performed across the UK every year. It is also still our leading centre for cataract research.

Professor David O’Brart, a consultant ophthalmic surgeon, has been looking at the benefits of operating on both eyes at the same time, something not

routinely offered on the NHS. It is hoped this can be introduced at St Thomas’ as his research shows it can increase productivity by up to 38 per cent and help patients recover faster and spend less time in hospital.

The head of St Thomas’ eye service, consultant ophthalmologist Mr Nigel Davies, said: “It’s always an honour to help patients, especially when it comes

to saving their sight. There is something particularly special about doing that in the same place where Sir Harold Ridley invented modern cataract surgery.

“The eye team at St Thomas’ is very proud to carry on his legacy every day.

Thanks to the procedure he developed, lives have been transformed across the world. His contribution to human health and wellbeing is enormous.”

Hamlet fans will walk from Welling to Champion Hill

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FOLLOWING THE success of their walk from Crystal Palace’s Selhurst Park to Champion Hill during pre-season, Dulwich Hamlet will be running their second Walk and Talk event this weekend.

Fans are invited to join fellow supporters on a pre-match walk from Welling United to the Hamlet’s home in east Dulwich on Saturday.

The purpose of the walk is to raise awareness for mental health and male suicide, which is the biggest killer of men aged under 45 in the UK, equating to around 84 men a week.

Supporters will meet at Welling’s Park View Road Stadium at 8.30am, departing at 9am. The approximate ten-mile walk will include a number of stop-offs along the route.

FISHER CLINCHED back-to-back league wins for the first time this season to move seven points clear of the bottom of the SCEFL Premier Division table.

Stansfeld opened the scoring after just five minutes when Joe Minter’s corner was headed home by Casey Killilea at the far post.

But Stansfeld struggled to find their rhythm in the first half and Forest Hill always looked dangerous on the break.

However, a minute before halftime, Freddie Cray doubled the hosts’ lead when he fired into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Forest Hill Park reduced the deficit in the 52nd minute as striker Ollie Milton’s drive from the edge of the box gave goalkeeper Charlie Cottrell no chance.

Jake Britnell then had a chance to restore Stansfeld’s two-goal lead,

but his flick from close range was saved. Moments later a Lennie Wise header found Britnell six yards out but he put his effort over the bar.

They were the last goal-scoring opportunities as Stansfeld saw the game out to clinch three points.

Stansfeld are sixth in the table.

Stansfeld were in Hospitals Charity Cup action on Tuesday night. They defeated Crockenhill 6-1 with goals from Sam Ryan (2), Macey Malyon, Billy Shinners, Minter and Rob Hughes.

Centre-back Debrah, 19, initially joined the Hamlet on a month loan but that was extended to the end of the season as the Dulwich side battle to stay in National League South.

Rowett explained he doesn’t want to bring players back from loan spells unless it’s to challenge for a place in his first team in the Championship.

The Lions manager felt Debrah would not benefit from returning to play for the under-23s, a level the defender has looked comfortable at.

Debrah has been on the first-team bench at Millwall, and is a player the club feel has a promising future.

That will be enhanced if Debrah helps to keep Gavin Rose’s side in the sixth tier.

With Debrah in the side Dulwich have kept three clean sheets in the league

this year, including impressively at titlechasing Havant & Waterlooville last weekend.

“The young players sometimes go out on loan to get that game experience, and with someone like Jesse, physically the under-23s is quite easy for him in terms of that,” Rowett told the News.

“As we know as soon as you move up the levels then that physicality only gets you so far. So I think it’s a good test for him, he’s done quite well so far.

“I’m a big believer in once a young player goes out on loan, the day you come back you’re either back with the first team or you should go out on loan again to the next level.

“Sometimes you bring a player back from a loan and put them into the under23s and it can be a bit demotivating when there’s no game on the Saturday for them.

“That’s my opinion, that’s the way I like to structure it and it’s something we’re working towards. We won’t let a player go out on loan unless we feel it’s in their benefit, and if it’s in their benefit it’s up to them to go and do really well.”

Rapinoe was one of the stars of last year’s World Cup and provoked the ire of Donald Trump after her criticism of the US president.

It was a third clean sheet this year, with on-loan Millwall centre-back Jesse Debrah again impressing in defence.

Havant had to play for 50 minutes with ten men.

The Hamlet had the chance to take the lead in the sixth minute when Danny Mills reached Jeffrey Monakana’s cross but could only head into the side-netting.

The visitors looked dangerous and when Kieron Monlouis picked up a loose ball in midfield he drove forward and forced Craig Robson into a tackle that earned a booking.

Havant goalkeeper Ross Worner palmed away Monlouis’ fierce effort from 25 yards and then Dulwich thought they should have had a penalty when Monakana’s effort hit a hand in the box, but the referee waved play on.

Gavin Rose’s side continued to play with confidence and Mills was next to

go close as he got in on Worner’s goal but his shot bounced off a poor pitch and away from the target.

Benny Read threatened for the hosts but Aaron Barnes was there to block, before the Hamlet had another opportunity in the 32nd minute.

Barnes found Monlouis whose drive was tipped over by Worner. From the corner the ball fell to Joe Bedford and this time it was Robson who saved his side by heading away.

Four minutes later, Havant’s Andy Drury saw his shot blocked and Read could only head the rebound straight at Dulwich stopper Charlie Grainger.

Dulwich defender Christian Smith was then booked after preventing Jonah Ayunga from breaking through.

Robson headed the resulting free-kick wide.

Havant were reduced to ten men four minutes before the break when Mills was through on goal on the edge of the box but was taken down

by Simon Walton, who was shown a straight red card. Smith tested Worner from the free-kick but the goalkeeper showed safe hands.

The hosts showed more attacking purpose immediately after the break and Debrah did well to prevent

Ayunga opening the scoring in the 47th minute, before the latter missed an even better chance moments later when he skied over from twelve yards after Danny Kedwell had set him up.

The title-chasers then wondered how they didn’t take the lead just after the hour. It came from Grainger’s save to deny Ayunga before the ball landed at Robson’s feet two yards out in front of an open goal, but the defender somehow shot wide of the target.

Dulwich were struggling to match their first-half display, summed up in the 72nd minute when Mills and Monakana both left the ball to each other from Nyren Clunis’ cross and the chance was gone.

Bedford shot straight at Worner with seven minutes left before Debrah again covered to thwart Ayunga with the clock running down.

In added-time, Ben Chapman saw his effort go just wide before the game’s most controversial moment when the referee deemed that Mills had committed a foul no one else seemed to see just as Clunis was going through.

The result leaves the Hamlet fourteenth in the table ahead of their game against Welling at Champion Hill this Saturday. Kick-off is 3pm.

Jed Wallace can’t find a way through

By John Kelly at The Den johnk@southwarknews.co.uk STORM CIARA visited The Den last Sunday – but it was West Brom that blew Millwall’s house down as they exerted the superiority that has seen them rise to the top of the Championship.

Baggies boss Slaven Bilic scoffed at the suggestion when it was put to him after the game that the conditions should have suited Millwall’s more agricultural style.

And you could understand his scorn, especially when it takes a bit more than wind and rain to put off rugged players such as Kyle Bartley, Jake Livermore and Semi Ajayi.

It was a lazy presumption. Good technical players are still good technical players on a bad pitch. In fact they probably state that better on a bad pitch than lesser technical players.

The way Hal Robson-Kanu tricked and flicked his way past defenders at times made it look like he was playing with an elastic band attaching the ball to his foot.

Millwall huffed and puffed in the gusts and the rain, but Bilic’s house was made of bricks and mortar that would not be shaken.

The visitors set the tone early when Ajayi fired over at the back post from a corner and then Matheus Pereira’s shot

came off the woodwork. The one-waytraffic nature of the game rarely veered off that course.

At times it seemed Albion had extra attackers on the pitch. They cut through Millwall time and time again and when the final tally came in they had registered 29 attempts on goal.

Only Leeds at Elland Road had come close to that number against the Lions this season. The previous evening Leeds had just one effort on target against Nottingham Forest, the same season-low number they had at The Den in October. Millwall were unusually ragged at the back and they could have lost by a lot more, something their manager Gary Rowett acknowledged after the one-sided contest.

Millwall didn’t have a shot on goal until the 22nd minute, and it was through their most dangerous player, Jed Wallace, who forced Sam Johnstone to palm away his 35-yard free-kick.

Millwall’s forays into West Brom territory were intermittent and stilted.

Rowett started with three central midfielders in Ryan Woods, Shaun Williams and Jayson Molumby and perhaps it was a surprise the manager didn’t go with two up front. The idea was to get Wallace and Aiden O’Brien close to Matt Smith, but Smith got little from Ajayi and Bartley. O’Brien had little effect on the contest and it’s one of the frustrations with him that if he

isn’t getting chances at goal he’s not affecting the game from an attacking point of view in any meaningful way.

Millwall did have some chances.

Wallace shot over from eight yards out after Mahlon Romeo’s attempt had been blocked.

But the away side created the more clear-cut opportunities, some from Millwall’s mistakes.

Bartley almost benefitted in the 26th minute when Shaun Hutchinson swiped at the ball as he tried to clear, but the Baggies centre-back’s stabbed effort went just wide of the near post.

After being beaten by Pereira’s earlier shot that hit the post, Bart Bialkowski got down low to his left to save from Robson-Kanu after Pereira had put the striker through on goal.

Bialkowski was busier than he’s been used to recently. He palmed away Pereira’s long-range effort three minutes before the break but moments later the goalkeeper couldn’t keep out Filip Krovinovic’s curled effort from 22 yards. West Brom deserved their lead.

Millwall were living on the edge.

Seconds after leaving Jake Cooper one-on-one with Robson-Kanu – with the defender just about seeing off the danger – the pair were in direct confrontation again. With RobsonKanu shooting 20 yards out, Cooper just got there in time to block for a corner.

Robson-Kanu was involved far too often for the Lions’ liking. Four minutes into the second half he scooped over from two yards after Callum Robinson’s shot had been deflected into his path.

Robinson was next to go close as his strike deflected just past the post.

The Baggies kept creating chances and Bialkowski saved from Krovinovic before Millwall finally got up the other end. The hosts had a penalty claim in the 58th minute when Wallace’s freekick appeared to hit Robinson’s raised arm. Nothing given. West Brom went straight down the pitch and Bialkowski was called upon again to save Pereira’s shot at the near post.

Rowett sent on Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Connor Mahoney a minute later but the changes had little effect.

One of West Brom’s substitutes, Matt Phillips, was next to fire towards the Cold Blow Lane end as he cut inside Murray Wallace but he missed the target.

Jed Wallace shot straight at Johnstone from Tom Bradshaw’s flick, but it seemed only a matter of time before West Brom scored again.

Right-back Dara O’Shea netted the clinching second, heading in Kamil Grosicki’s right-wing corner at the near post.

West Brom’s class told as Millwall found out how far away they are from the top echelon.

Bennett appeared in the play-off final last year when Derby County lost 2-1 to Aston Villa at Wembley.

Rams boss Frank Lampard moved on to Chelsea and Derby have struggled to match last season’s performances, though they have shown improvement in the early part of the year following the arrival of Wane Rooney.

Bennett has been getting to know the squad since moving down south, including his ex-Derby team-mate and current Lions skipper Alex Pearce.

Former England youth international Bennett has been impressed with the standard in training.

“We have to aim for the play-offs, there’s still a chance for us to get in there,” Benett said. “I’m looking at the squad and even in the first day at training I was somewhat surprised – Derby have obviously got well-known talent and players who have done it in their careers – but I’ve come here and there’s not much difference.

“I’m getting to know the lads personally and football-wise. [Pearce] was a great lad. He wasn’t the captain there but he really looked after the young lads.

“I’ve come here and seen a different side to him. Hats off to him because it looks like he’s doing a great job with the lads. They buzz off him and he’s a great captain who was a big part of me coming here.

“We spoke before I arrived, he was asking me how I was with my injury.

That shows he was keen for me to come here. “[Lampard] was good as well, he really put his faith in young lads and made you believe. He really had faith in me and I can’t thank him enough for what he did for me.”

Bennett has spent his entire career with Derby, this being his fifth temporary move away from a club he made his debut for at the age of fifteen.

The forward wants to clinch a permanent move to Gary Rowett’s side in the summer, and gives an unusually frank answer to the question of whether it would be a wrench to leave the Rams.

“Not really, no,” he said. “ I’m at that age now where I wasn’t really getting that excitement going into the training ground.

“I’m over the moon to be here and I

want to get going. It’s a whole new start for me.

“The lads have been great with me, welcomed me with open arms and I’m delighted for that. [Rowett] is a great man-manager. He listens to his players and he gets his tactics across really well, the lads take them on board.

“I’m delighted to be working with him again.”

Bennett also knows that he has to

improve his end product to earn a fulltime move to south London. He hasn’t scored since last May, one of three goals last season.

“I want to score goals and get assists, I want to help the team to victories,” Bennett said. “I’ll give 100 per cent, but I know I need to get more goals and assists.

“I did alright last season, but it’s time for me to kick on more.”

“All of us sit down, Scott wasn’t around [when the decision was taken] but he’s a massive part of the process,” Rowett said. “Myself, Alex [Aldridge, head of recruitment], Nuge, Robbo, the coaches, we all sat down to make a combined decision. It’s not that I make the decision or Scott makes it or Nuge.

“We had a bit of a plan that if a team comes in for such and such then we’d let them go out on loan. If a team had come in for Junior at the right level we might have let him go out for that exposure. But that opportunity didn’t come, so they continue to develop with the under-23s.

“Junior’s got loads of pace and power and there are a couple of other areas of his game that he needs to tighten up on to keep improving.”

Tiensa, 19, is a left-back and Rowett said he is a player with “pace and power” who can keep improving as he aims for the first team.

Millwall have just one out-and-out recognised left-back in Murray Wallace, with Shane Ferguson used mostly by Rowett on the left side of midfield.

In the team or not, Alex Pearce’s role is the ‘exact same’

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk YOU WON’T find Alex Pearce moaning about rotation – with the Millwall skipper explaining his role in the dressing room is the same whether he starts or not.

Pearce has been the defender who loses out when Lions boss Gary Rowett plays a back four instead of a back five.

But even when he doesn’t start Pearce still leads the match-day squad out for their warm-up.

Pearce knows that even if he performs well it doesn’t guarantee a start in the next game.

“Listen, the manager picks the side and whatever team he picks it’s up to us as players to adhere to that,” Pearce said. “It’s your job as a professional footballer that when you’re picked to play you give it the maximum that you can give in terms of effort, application and hopefully quality as well.

“And if the next game you’re not in the side for whatever reason, that’s all part of being a footballer. You’ve got to accept that and stay together with the group.

“We’ve got good players here, we’ve

got good competition for places and that’s healthy for everyone. Our job as players, and this is what I say to the players all the time, is to give the manager as big a headache as possible to make sure he picks you. And the manager wants that, he wants to have a headache because he knows it means he has players performing well.

“That’s the job. When you get asked to play you come in and take your chance.

It’s not up to us to pick the team. You can have as much an input as possible by performing well on the pitch. That’s all there is to it.

“It’s exactly the same whether I’m playing or not. I try and help, I try to be a positive influence. If I’m not playing I try to help the players who are to get into a good mindset before the game.

“If I am playing, whilst focusing on myself and my mindset, I’m still also trying to help others. I’m happy to do that.”

When Pearce is starting, he is the one who delivers the final messages to the other ten players in the group huddle just before kick-off.

Peace said: “It’s nothing complicated, believe me. It’s just a few quick words, normally a few quick loud words.

“It’s trying to rally the troops, to get the lads going in those final moments

“It’s not up to us to pick the team. You can have as much an input as possible by performing well on the pitch – that’s all there is to it” before kick-off, focusing everyone’s minds on what’s about to happen.”

Pearce is a player most of the squad cite as being the key influence and leader in the dressing room. But the centre-back isn’t doing cartwheels over the praise he receives.

“If people want to say certain things that’s fine, it’s up to them,” Pearce continued. “That’s not for me to say.

I just try to do the best I can, lead by example and help people as much as I can.

“I’ve been around this league now for a number of years, so I feel like I’ve got good experience at this level and if I can help people I will.

“But also I’ve got to look after my own job and make sure I’m doing the right things, that I’m playing. That’s my job

first and foremost.”

Pearce has been joined at the club by his former Derby team-mate Mason Bennett, who sought the advice of the Lions’ captain before sealing his loan move.

“He’s a Millwall-type player,” Pearce said, “he’s got the characteristics and attributes to help our team. He gives us something different in terms of pace and power in forward areas. He’s a strong lad and I think that if he can stay fit he will be a good acquisition for us.

“He’s a fantastic lad and for me what’s done is done. Yes he made a mistake and he knows that but there is certainly no talk of it in the dressing room or at the training ground. He’s here to focus on his football and get his career back on track.

“He’s desperate to do that, he’s desperate to do well and he’s really happy to do that. He wants to help the lads and the club, and you can’t ask for any more than that.”

It was in April last year that former Lions boss Neil Harris revealed there had been some problems in the dressing room throughout the season.

But it’s a different environment now as the Lions try to keep up a promotion challenge.

“We’ve got a fantastic group here, a

group that’s together whether we’re winning or losing games,” Pearce said.

“We will stay together, that’s one thing for sure.

“It’s easy when results are going your way and people are giving you praise, and rightly so when you’ve done well, but it’s also important that when you do have a little dip in form or a couple of bad results that you stay strong.

“You have to have a good spirit, fight and a will to get back on track. We’re working really hard every single day on things we need to improve, but also remembering what we’re about.

“We have real energy and we have a go, especially on our own patch. No team likes coming to our stadium and we’ve got to play on that.

“We haven’t set any targets in terms of points, we just literally look at the next game and say, ‘right, let’s put in a good performance, let’s do what we’re good at doing’.

“We want to enjoy these last few months of the season and have fun trying to perform well. And let’s enjoy what we are, which is a tough team to play against.

“We’ve got a stadium that’s tough to come to. Let’s make it hard for teams and then show the quality that we’ve got.”

Championship preview

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL ARE aiming for a first win away from home since midDecember when they take on a Preston side Gary Rowett expects to be in the promotion mix at the end of the season.

After a run of three wins in four games on the road starting in November, the Lions have two draws and two defeats in their last four.

Alex Neil’s side went sixth last weekend after their 2-1 win at Wigan Athletic.

North End signed experienced winger Scott Sinclair from Celtic in January, a statement of their intent going into the decisive part of the season.

Millwall lost 3-2 in this fixture last season, a performance and result that so infuriated Neil Harris that he refused to speak to the media afterwards.

The Lions’ last win at Deepdale was 2-1 in the old Division One in February 2004.

Rowett believes Preston can be an example for Millwall in how they compete in the top part of the league despite a smaller budget than the likes of Leeds, West Brom and Fulham.

“I’d expect them to be in and around the play-offs,” Rowett said. “Alex has had, I think this is his third season to build what he wants. I don’t think he’s got that big a budget but he’s built sensibly and really efficiently with some young, mobile, hungry players.

“That’s very similar to what we want to do. We want to be a team that not only can challenge for one season but for three, four, five seasons. That’s really important.

“They’re a good example of how to do it. What’s ironic is when I came in here I used them as a bit of an example, and then for a while we went above them in the league. I think that shows we’re not a million miles away from that.

“It’ll be another tough game, it’s a good side and it’s a difficult place to go, Deepdale. But when do we say in the Championship it’s not a tough game?

“Alex has done a really good job. I’m a big fan of his and he’s a good guy as well.”

Rowett will be without Frank Fielding and Ben Thompson for the trip north, but otherwise should have plenty of selection options.

Murray Wallace has been a mainstay in the side this season, and there is little let-up in the intensity of the challenge as they face another of the promotion contenders.

Wallace said: “The games we’ve had recently have been tough, against teams in the top six in the table. At the same

Morison went through an interview process to get the job, with part of the recruitment criteria a session he put on for a youth team, which impressed the Cardiff decision-makers.

Boss expects summer ‘casualties’

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT will give players the chance to prove their worth to Millwall – but said there could be “casualties” in the next transfer window.

The Lions currently have a squad of 23 senior players, including loanees Luke Steele, Ryan Woods and Mason Bennett.

Given the club’s budget the squad is unlikely to increase from that number next season.

But even though Rowett, who took charge of his first game at the end of October, is not rushing to judge players, he admitted there would be some “big decisions” to be made.

“I think anyone can grab a chance up until any game in the season,” Rowett said. “What I’d say is if you want to shape the team moving forward sometimes there has to be casualties.

“When the bar is raised and the standards lifted by the players, some players will get up to that standard and some players might not.

“I think it’s difficult to judge that in the four months we’ve been here, we’ve got another two or three months left of the season. It’s quite hard to make those decisions early on but I think you always have a little bit of an idea.

“A lot of it comes down to budget. If you’ve got a bigger budget then you can house two or three players extra.

If it’s a really tight budget then the only way you can change it is to make big decisions along the way.”

The Blues thumped Wolves 7-0 this week to reach the last eight, where they will play a Lions side that have beaten Bournemouth, Fleetwood and Bolton.

It’s the meeting of the highest-scoring sides left in this season’s competition.

While Millwall’s goal tally is an impressive thirteen in three rounds, Chelsea have scored nineteen.

Although the game is currently listed for a 7pm kick-off on Saturday, February 29 on the Football Association’s website, it won’t be played on that date.

Millwall’s senior side host Bristol City at The Den that Saturday, and Chelsea are away at Bournemouth.

The tie is set to attract a large crowd, with Millwall confident of a good away turnout, though the Lions’ allocation has yet to be decided.

The fixture will most likely take place late in the week before the weekend starting February 28. Frank Lampard’s senior side host Liverpool in the fifth round of the FA Cup on March 3.

Chelsea are recent kingpins in the Youth competition, winning five in a row before Liverpool’s triumph last season. Blues players such as Mason Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi have gone on to become first-team regulars.

Millwall have been in the final three times, winning in 1979 and 1991 and losing to Arsenal in 1994.
