Southwark's Single women can now get IVF treatment

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Single women and those who do not live with their partner will now be eligible for IVF in Southwark and Lambeth after an outcry over the “offensive” policy that barred them from treatment.

In a formal statement given to the News on Friday, January 24, Dr Angela Bhan, managing director of NHS Bromley CCG and the chair of the South East London Treatment Assess Policy review, said: “The treatment access policy for IVF for single women was reviewed and changes to the policy were agreed by the six south east London’s CCG Governing Bodies in November 2019.

“The updated policy gives single women access to IVF treatment on the same basis as same sex female couples and came into effect in December 2019.

“This brings the IVF access policy for single women in south east London into line with latest best practice and national guidance.”

The single-parent caveat has now been scrapped across the affected NHS trusts; Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham, Greenwich, Bromley and Bexley.

In August last year, the News reported that a “rapid review” was taking place after it emerged single women and noncohabitating partners were being refused treatment on the grounds they would “disadvantage” any future child; despite NICE guidelines making no mention of patients relationship status.

Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman was among those appalled by

the south-east London-wide policy, which barred women who did not live under the same roof as their partner, and single women – for example those using sperm donors – from having the treatment.

NHS documents had stated: “Because of the known disadvantage that providing assisted conception to a single woman would cause both the child and the mother, funding of assisted conception for single women is not available in SE London”, while “couples should be living together and in a stable relationship”.

Harman wrote to the government’s secretary of state for health and social care, Matt Hancock, urging him to intervene, describing the “terrible message” the “offensive” policy sent to single women and their children.

The issue also highlighted the continuing postcode lottery for fertility treatment.

Although NHS guidance state women under 40 should be offered three full cycles of IVF if they have been unable to naturally conceive after two years of trying, or tests show there is no chance of conceiving naturally, the offer varies across London boroughs.

In Croydon, IVF is not available on the NHS. Private treatment is prohibitively expensive for many struggling would-be parents; often in excess of £5,000 per cycle.

Between 2013 and 2017, the number of cash-strapped Clinical Commissioning Groups offering the recommended three cycles to eligible women under 40 halved.

Charities welcomed the decision, but said more needs to be done to create “fertility fairness”, warning many couples and women were being rejected on non-clinical grounds.

Women's Equality candidate to step into the breach

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The Women’s Equality Party has announced its election candidates for this May’s Greater London Authority election, including who will be competing for Florence Eshalomi’s Lambeth and Southwark seat.

Katherine O’Brien, from the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, said: “NHS South East London’s previous policy has forced women to spend tens of thousands of pounds on IVF treatment and made others feel that they might not be a good parent because they did not have a partner.

“Infertility is recognised as a disease by the World Health Organisation. Ill-found social judgements and discriminatory rationing should play no part in the allocation of IVF treatment on the NHS. “While we welcome this decision, it is heart-breaking that for many women and their partners their ability to have a child will be dependent on their postcode or their bank balance.

“It is time for a national review of IVF provision to ensure that all CCGs have the funding and guidance they need to provide evidence-based, comprehensive care to those experiencing infertility.”

A petition to end the IVF postcode lottery was set up by Dr Emily Scott in 2019 and gained more than 10,000 signatures. So far, there has been no formal government response to the campaign.

She said: “It is only right that this policy has been amended to allow single women to access IVF treatment on the NHS, and we are very glad of the swift review and decisionmaking undertaken by South-East London CCGs to address the limitations of this.

“We implore other CCGs to follow suit and to take urgent steps to address other shortcomings and inequalities which are hindering fair access to treatment for infertility for people across the country, particularly the allocation of treatment according to postcode, relationship status, and other arbitrary, non-clinical criteria.”

At the last GLA elections, in May 2016, the party almost gained a seat despite being in its infancy. This year, Korina Holmes (pictured below) will be standing in Lambeth and Southwark, hoping to take the seat from Labour, currently held by new Vauxhall MP Florence Eshalmomi.

The Women’s Equality Party’s campaign is focusing on what it describes as a “stale” assembly. Their key target, however, is taking a seat from UKIP, who gained two members in 2016.

Holmes, however, could have an advantage pitching herself as a feminist candidate in a party focused on increasing representation and working with colleagues across the political spectrum.

As the News reported last week, Labour has not put forward an all women shortlist for Eshalomi’s successor candidate, and has been accused of rejecting applications from senior women councillors already working in both boroughs.

Holmes describes herself as a single mother, disputes lawyer and, above all, feminist. Her father came to the UK from Barbados as part of the Windrush education; life experience means she has a foot in both “old and new” boroughs.

In a campaign video released last year, Holmes said: “I want equality for men as well as women. I want to represent the women’s Equality Party so my son doesn’t grow up in a world where he has to choose between work and spending time with his children, without the pressure to become a breadwinner, and stigma around stay at home fathers.”

Parents: 'We waited four years for our girl to be able to say Mum and Dad'

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A five-year-old girl who was locked in her body has started taking her first steps and saying “mummy and daddy” for the first time after treatment at the Evelina Children’s Hospital.

Anastasia Buturin gradually stopped moving her arms, hands and legs as a baby, and doctors were baffled by the cause of the condition.

By the time she was three, she could no longer move her head, and was barely able to open her own eyes.

“When Anastasia was born she was a normal healthy baby,” said her father, Valentin. “She was very happy, smiley and made lots of eye contact.

“When she was around three months old, we noticed that she was becoming very floppy and was struggling to hold her head up and as she got older she couldn’t move her hands, arms or legs.

“We were extremely concerned but no one was able to tell us what was wrong.

We were desperate for answers.”

Initially, the little schoolgirl could communicate by moving her eyes – but even that became impossible.

“It was extremely heart-breaking watching Anastasia’s body deteriorate.

We began to fear that her life was in danger,” Valentin said.

The toddler was referred to the

Evelina in 2018, and experts discovered she had a rare genetic condition called Tyrosine Hydroxylase deficiency.

It means the body does not produce enough dopamine, which helps muscles and the brain to function effectively.

But in June 2018, Anastasia started dopamine replacement therapy – and her parents say the change was remarkable.

“Within two days she was able to wave her hands around, open the palms and cuddle her teddies,” her 38-year-old father said.

“Six months after she began treatment she started saying words and she said mum and dad for the first time last December.

“It was such a magical moment. We waited four years to hear her say those words.”

Her life has been transformed by the treatment, said the doting dad. Now the family, from Seaford, East Sussex, hope that Anastasia will carry on progressing and attend a mainstream school.

“It’s extremely pleasing to know that Anastasia has responded so well to the treatment,” said Dr Helen Mundy, a consultant at the hospital.

“The condition can be very difficult to spot and diagnose but at Evelina London we are very fortunate to have teams here that are able to diagnose and treat rare conditions like this.”

The harvey half Millwall superfan's dad to run to bring awareness Exclusive

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The dad of Millwall superfan Harvey Brown will run his firstever half marathon to raise awareness of the ultra-rare Morquio syndrome.

Harvey, ten, is among those affected by the condition which affects skeletal growth, eyesight and hearing.

His dad, Dean, has decided to run the London Landmarks Half Marathon to give money to the MPS Society, which helps sufferers and families of those with MPS conditions, of which Morquio is one.

He will be undertaking the gruelling feat with fellow Millwall fan Steve Rendell – who last year ran the halfmarathon in Harvey’s name.

“Morquio is quite a rare condition,” explained Dean, who lives with his family in Bermondsey.

“So hopefully it’ll raise awareness.

That’s why I’ve done it, to give something back to the charity.

“The day we got the diagnosis, our world fell apart. But the MPS Society were amazing, it’s such an important charity.”

Pals Dean and Steve have set themselves a £2,000 target to raise

by March 29 and have so far raised nearly £500.

The organisers of the marathon have even let Dean and Steve choose their own numbers to run the race.

“I’ve picked 10209 because that’s Harvey’s date of birth,” he said. “It’s really good of them. And Steve’s picked 1885 because of Millwall.

“I decided to do it because Steve did it for Harvey last year, and at the time although he wasn’t a total stranger, he was a bit of a stranger.

“And I just thought if Steve can do it I can do it as well. I’m a bit nervous because I’ve never done one before, but it helps that I’m doing one with him.”

GP successfully pitched to take over practice on the Brandon Estate serving 3,000 patients

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Maddock Way GP Surgery on the Brandon Estate has been saved after another GP successfully pitched to take over the practice.

At a crunch meeting on Tuesday, held

by Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group, Penrose Surgery presented a business case for taking over the Cooks Road premises when incumbent GP Dr Sinha retires in May 2020.

The CCG approved the decision, meaning the surgery will remain open for at least another 2-3 years, full time rather than part-time as at present, until Manor Place, a larger development Penrose Surgery is expanding into, is ready to open.

Neil Coyle MP, who had campaigned

for the surgery to stay open alongside ward councillors, said it was “great news for patients”.

“They will now have better hours on the same site and won’t have to travel further. Yvonne’s campaign and the hard work of councillors Eleanor Kerslake and Alice MacDonald has made a big difference and they all deserve praise.

“The CCG listened and acted, thankfully, but must examine how they oversee other retirements going forward.”

A spokesperson for NHS Southwark CCG said: “Our Primary Care Commissioning Committee today approved the business case for Penrose Surgery to have the rent and rates funded by the NHS to enable them to take on the lease of the property currently being used by Maddock Way Surgery.

“The decision to approve Penrose

Surgery’s proposal was made in light of feedback from patients and local residents and the benefits the expansion will bring to existing Penrose Surgery patients and to patients who would like to be able to continue to access GP services on the Brandon Estate.”

Patients will still need to register with another practice, but if they chose Penrose Street after May they will be able to access the service at the Cooks Road building.

As the News has reported, a petition to keep the surgery open after patients were told to re-register elsewhere as it was unlikely another provider would be interested in taking over a practice with just 3,000 patients on its books. A petition to re-assess, set up by receptionist Yvonne Arnould, was signed by more than 2,000 residents.

Of the 20,000 earmarked for the Old Kent Road, 5,000 will be at social rent and 2,000 categorised as “affordable”.

It is anticipated the social housing will be constructed within four entirely new council estates.

The council has been buying up brownfield sites in the area for new developments, but will also channel funding, as the News has reported, into shoehorning new homes onto old estates, whether through adding extra storeys onto rooftops or “in-filling” new homes into old estates.

Although the entire project is heavily dependent on the Bakerloo line extension going ahead, and in a prime zone one location, investment is expected to flow regardless.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A draft “social regeneration charter” has been published by Southwark Council, outlining a series of commitments to reduce inequality and make sure development works for everyone in new “high-density areas”.

The council also suggested that four new council estates could be built as part of the Old Kent Road regeneration scheme.

Informed by “thousands of conversations” with residents, business owners, and charities living within the boundary of the planned redevelopment, the charter lists a series of bold promises, including meeting - if not exceeding - the entire housing need for the area; creating the largest “living wage” community in London, doubling existing green space, and providing free youth services and a “cultural offer”.

Given the history of previous regeneration projects encountering widespread opposition and long-running campaigns and legal challenges over affordable housing and business space it would seem Southwark Council is acknowledging, however opaquely, that mistakes were made in the past and is endeavouring not to repeat them.

One line, in the draft document, explains: “The regeneration of Old Kent Road will take place over almost two decades. In order to ensure that this major change works for everyone and that we improve the livelihood of existing and future generations, we will work differently and better with developers…”

The project has been led by Bermondsey councillor Leo Pollak, who has overall responsibility for Tooley Street’s new homes programme. Old Kent Road is the largest regeneration site in his portfolio – 20,000 new homes in two decades.

Family want move to save council £30k on taxi fares rotherhithe

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council spends more than £30,000 a year just on taxis to get a profoundly deaf girl to school in St Albans because her family cannot get council housing there.

Mum-of-two, Sophie, lives in council housing in Bermondsey with her partner and children, nine-year-old Daisy and two-year-old Frazer. All four are profoundly deaf.

Since last February, taxpayers have been forking out nearly £3,000 a month in taxi fares for Daisy to go to school, despite the family’s many efforts to move closer to St Albans.

The bill could also increase if no solution is found, as Frazer is due to attend the school later this year.

Because his school day would be at different times to Daisy’s, he too could need a taxi to take him to school. Frazer would attend the school until he is sixteen.

The fed-up Moreton family have attempted to move council housing to St Albans and save Southwark taxpayers’ money, but to no avail.

Officials at Southwark town hall are now locked in discussions with their counterparts in St Albans in a bid to reduce the hefty bill.

Daughter Daisy first attended a mainstream school in Greenwich, but was unhappy and fell far behind her peers, said Sophie.

“She struggled with English and Maths, she didn’t understand the teachers,” the BSL user told the News.

“She had very few friends, she felt stressed and moody.”

The family applied for the specialist school 40 miles away when Daisy fell behind in mainstream education, with a reading level of someone half her age.

Everyone Active’s Sporting Champions scheme, now in its fifth year, has so far helped more than 1,000 athletes with free gym access, financial support and expert training advice and competition costs.

In 2019, participants had the opportunity to join sessions hosted across the country with talks from industry professionals and Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

The director of the scheme, Duncan Jefford, said: “We are proud to have invested over one million pounds in helping upcoming athletes across the country to achieve their goals.

“As part of the scheme, athletes will benefit from mentoring sessions throughout the year that will provide them with support, advice and guidance.

“We have exciting plans for the future of the scheme and I would encourage any athletes from Southwark that are looking not just for funding but also mentoring for their future sports career to apply for Everyone Active’s Sporting Champions scheme.”

“I am utterly exhausted emotionally and have no idea of where to turn to, surely there has to be some reasonable outcome that would save Southwark a vast quantity of money a year by just working out a house exchange.”

Southwark offered a council housing swap with St Albans, but it declined, according to Cllr Kieron Williams.

“Firstly, I am really sorry for the inconvenience and stress that Ms Moreton and her children are faced with in this situation – it’s far from ideal, but I’m confident that we can collectively come up with more options to hopefully resolve the situation and I am more than happy to meet with Ms Moreton to discuss it further,” he said.

“We have supported the Moreton family with their application for a mutual exchange to a home in St Albans, and have offered a reciprocal arrangement with St Albans Council, but unfortunately they have declined this option so far.

“We have also offered the family the option of private rented accommodation in St Albans, but this would mean that they have a less secure and affordable home than one managed by the local authority.

“We have written to St Albans Council again to ask that we meet or to discuss this and see if there are any further options open to this family and I sincerely hope we can find a more practical and less expensive solution very soon.”

A St Albans spokesperson told the News that discussions were ongoing with Southwark Council and that it hoped to get the situation resolved soon.

£1m housing advice fund

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk One million of funding has been committed by Southwark Council for independent housing advice for residents living on the condemned Aylesbury Estate.

Every year for the next decade £100,000 will be available to help support residents, whether leaseholders, tenants or those in temporary accommodation, throughout the on-going demolition and rehousing programme.

The cash is being donated to the Creation Southwark Community Interest Company, which is taking over from the Creation Trust; a charity that has worked on the estate since 2007.

In that time, more than 500 people living on the estate have been helped by its dedicated caseworkers. The charity will formally close down in April 2021 and the community interest company will take over thereafter.

The charity’s chief executive, Charlotte Benstead said: “I am delighted that the council have seen the advantage of this service and have prioritised funding. The regeneration of the Aylesbury estate offers exciting prospects, including new homes and jobs, but is also creates some challenges, particularly for the most vulnerable in our community.

“This additional funding will mean that the work can continue to make the rehousing process as good as it can possibly be, supporting residents to find new homes and getting them settled once they move.”

Appeal after moped rider dies

Fifty-year-old Fida Yassine, from Southwark, was prounced dead on Monday, January 20 in hospital.

Officers and paramedics found him critically injured on Dennetts Road, Peckham, at 3.36pm on Sunday, January 19, after reports of a traffic collision.

Yassine, who had been riding a moped, was involved in a crash with a blue BMW, and a parked car. The BMW driver and a female passenger spoke with officers at the scene. Police say they had reports that two men had made off from the BMW on foot.

On Tuesday, January 21, the 23-year-old driver was arrested. They later arrested two other men, aged 27 and 21. The woman was not arrested.

All three have been bailed.

Detective Chief Inspector James Stanyer described the crash as "a tragic incident which resulted in the death of an innocent man".

"Officers are working to establish the full circumstances of the incident, and need assistance from the public to piece together what happened on that Sunday afternoon," he added.

"I want to hear from any members of the public who witnessed the collision, and in particular the moments before the collision.

"Did you see anything suspicious? Do you recall seeing people getting into a car near to Dennetts Road?

"Or did you notice anything unusual about the BMW, its occupants and the way in which the car was being driven?

"I also want to hear from anyone who saw the aftermath of the incident and may recall two men running from the scene."

Waterloo business sold it as part of model-making tool kit

A sales assistant at Waterloo’s Ian Allen Book & Model Shop sold the teen a knife as part of a model-making tool kit in July.

Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court heard that the staff member at the specialist bookshop didn’t ask any questions about the boy’s age.

Magistrates heard that the shop, on Lower Marsh, could have taken steps to prevent the under-age knife sale such as a Challenge 25 policy.

The shop’s defence told the court that it has now taken steps to make sure age-restricted goods couldn’t be sold to underage customers again.

“I find it extraordinary given the publicity surrounding young people and knife crime that traders are still selling knives to those below the legal age of 18,” said Cllr Paul Gadsby, Lambeth Council’s cabinet member for housing.

“I am grateful that our officers are taking tough action against these businesses and I hope this case sends a strong message to all retailers in our borough – that they have a major part to play in protecting our community and reducing serious crime.”

Some have criticised the decision to prosecute the small business, which sells antiquarian books.

“I know we have to crack down on knife sales,” said one social media user. “But for goodness sake. How big is a craft knife?

Punishing a small private business in this way is ludicrous.”

Another added: “Garbage. Create laws and then the police and council act on the laws by targeting the softest targets possible.”

Ian Allan Publishing Ltd, the trading company, pleaded guilty to one offence in relation to the sale, and was fined £5,000.

It must also pay prosecution costs of £1,460 and a victim surcharge of £181.

Peckham High Street set for improvements after third road death in five years

The broken water pipe has put the gym out of action for the foreseeable future. It is expected to remain shut for several months.

A re-opening date is yet to be confirmed.

Repair work will include a comprehensive refurbishment, including a new studio and improved weights area.

PureGym says members’ direct debits will be suspended during the closure.

“We’ve had to temporarily close our Camberwell gym due to flooding caused by a water pipe,” a spokesperson confirmed.

“Members have not been charged and have been given access to all PureGym sites across the UK including nearby gyms - Camberwell Southampton Way and London Oval.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused to members and hope to resolve the situation soon.”

Guy’s and St Thomas’ says it will pay all its staff an independently calculated London living wage, writes Josh Salisbury...

The amount means that all workers are set to be paid more than the government’s ‘national living wage’ which will be £8.72 an hour. Trust staff will be paid the higher £10.75 at least.

The move makes the Trust the 6000th Living Wage employer in London, and means up to 259 low paid workers could see a pay boost.

The Trust estimates it will cost at least £142,000 this year to implement.

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Dulwich soldier has admitted carrying out a series of armed robberies across south London and Surrey.

Dillon Sharpe, 23, from Dulwich’s Lovelace Road, confessed to twelve robberies, eleven counts of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and to possessing a stun gun.

He had been a serving member of the Grenadier Guards.

Sharpe’s accomplice for one of his robberies, Elnur Bracegirdle, 21, of Chapel Lane, Preston – who also served in the Armed Forces – confessed to one count of robbery and one count of possessing a knife.

Alongside the pair, another two men were found guilty on Thursday for their role in the terrifying crimes, which only came to light after Sharpe was arrested.

Kristopher James-Merrill, 20, of Clapham’s Lyham Road, and Marlon Wright, 25, of Grove Road, Mitcham, were found guilty of seven robberies and attempted robberies in which an imitation gun was used.

James-Merrill was also a serving soldier.

Police said Sharpe had initially committed four of his crimes on his own in February 2018, targeting shops in Tulse Hill among others.

He then committed a string of

robberies with other defendants.

In January last year, Sharpe and Bracegirdle struck at a convenience shop in Brixton Hill in the early hours of the morning, wearing dark clothing.

The court heard that Sharpe came to the side of the counter while Bracegirdle remained by the door, and threatened the cashier with a sparking stun gun.

As the victim noticed that Bracegirdle had a knife, Sharpe shouted: “Open the till!”

The fearful cashier opened the till and Sharpe began stuffing a blue carrier bag with notes from it.

After the pair fled the scene of their robbery, the victim called the police.

Officers rushing to the scene noticed two men who matched the suspects while on their way, who turned out to be Sharpe and Bracegirdle.

Bracegirdle was arrested shortly before Sharpe, whom police said was still wearing the balaclava he used during the robbery. Also in Sharpe’s possession was the blue bag with a large amount of coins, gloves and the stun gun.

The pair were taken into custody and Sharpe was identified as being wanted for a series of earlier robberies.

“This case is both shocking and somewhat disheartening in that these men who were in positions of responsibility and trust – three of whom have served their country in the armed forces – resorted to targeting hardworking shopkeepers late at night,”

said Detective Sergeant Jamie Witts.

Sharpe was revealed to have carried out seven robberies or attempted robberies with pals James-Merrill and Wright in July across Kingston, Wallington and South Croydon.

All the July offences involved the same firearm and the robber Sharpe wore the same blue hooded Adidas top with large logo on the chest.

Officers attempted to arrest accomplice James-Merrill at his barracks, but he was not there.

Knowing that he was wanted, he handed himself into police at Wandsworth police station later on 10 January 2019.

Officers raided his home address in Clapham and found the distinctive imitation firearm identical to the one used in the offences in his bedroom.

The magazine from the firearm was missing, tying into one being dropped at a robbery on 24 July 2019.

DNA from the victim of that offence was found on the firearm.

Wright was then also identified having entered two of the venues and walking past a third prior to the robbery taking place.

The prosecution case outlined his role in reconnaissance and acting as a point of contact for Sharpe to facilitate his escape.

James-Merrill was also revealed to have used his vehicle to drive Sharpe to and from the offences and also entered one of the venues prior to the robbery.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Transport for London has announced details of improvement work to Peckham High Street, weeks after the death of pedestrian Jason Bent, the third to die on the same stretch of road since 2015.

TfL is ploughing funding into six high streets across London to improve their look and feel and encourage more walking and cycling, as well as finding ways to promote small businesses.

In Peckham High Street, TfL will join forces with Southwark Council to clear clutter and add more trees and new planters.

This is in addition to planned safety improvements including widening pavements, improving pedestrian crossings and lowering speed limits. A consultation on these safety measures will begin within weeks.

Five other locations in London have been selected for the scheme in Hendon, Thornton Heath, Nags Head Holloway Road, Whitechapel High Street and Tooting High Street.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for transport and the environment said: “We welcome TfL’s investment in Peckham High Street and look forward to being part of the consultation process to swiftly bring about much needed safety measures in the area.”

Pair given eighteen years and ten years behind bars for battering a man to within inches of his life

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Two people have been jailed after battering a man to within inches of his life in Camberwell.

Cecil Phillips, 46, and Tarnia Piasecki, 32, both from Camberwell’s Warner Road, were given eighteen years and ten years behind bars respectively last Wednesday for grievous bodily harm.

Both were found not guilty of attempted murder.

Their attack on Warner Road in September 2018 left their victim, believed to be in his forties, suffering serious head injuries.

He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition following the brutal beating – and police say it could have killed him.

“The victim of this horrific assault fortunately made a full recovery, thanks to the aid administered by the initial responding officers, paramedics and NHS staff,” said Detective Constable Nicola Barker.

"But for their efforts the assault inflicted by Phillips and Piasecki could have proved fatal. I hope the sentence we have received today will allow the victim some closure as he moves on with his life.”

Police arrested the pair the same day of the attack, but police did not initially know the identity of the victim as he lay in hospital.

After he awoke in late September and identified himself to hospital staff, it became apparent that he was known to the attackers.

It was revealed that Piasecki targeted the victim, approaching him in Camberwell and inviting him back to the address where the attack took place to rob him.

Phillips followed them and the Spanishspeaking victim was subjected to a brutal beating, lasting up to twenty minutes.

The judge in the case, HHJ Shetty, dubbed Phillips as a “dangerous offender” and Piasecki as a "fairly manipulative person” during his sentencing.

He also described how the victim was “attacked and beaten savagely.”

During that period, from February 4 to August 16, a massive 216,000 fines were issued to those breaking the size and weight rules according to the TfL data.

“The Rotherhithe Tunnel was built in 1908 and was not designed to cope with modern levels of traffic,” states TfL. “These restrictions help to ensure that road users can continue to use the tunnel safely while we work on plans for the tunnel's future.”

During the period the data covers,

banned vehicles were only fined once per day, no matter how many trips it made through the tunnel according to TfL. But since last month, drivers of banned vehicles could be fined for every single journey they make through the tunnel.

This is because “we've seen prohibited vehicles continue to make repeat offences,” says TfL. Drivers of vehicles that do not meet these restrictions can use Tower Bridge or the Blackwall Tunnel.

Fines are £130, but are reduced to £65 if paid within two weeks.

luxury flats appeal tate court DECISION

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Residents of a luxury block of flats by the Tate Modern have launched a fresh legal bid to shut down its viewing platform over claims visitors can see into their homes.

The privacy case was dismissed by Mr Justice Mann last February at the High Court – who advised the claimants they could install net curtains.

All five claimants are residents of the luxury Neo-Bankside development, which is just metres away from the popular Tate Modern in parts.

They had sought an injunction to get the Tate to close part of its tenth-floor viewing platform or to erect screens.

Now they have appealed Mr Justice Mann’s decision to reject their case last year.

A hearing was held in the Court of

Appeal last week, but no date has yet been set for the judgement.

In the original case, Mr Justice Mann said that while there was a material intrusion of privacy from tourists, there would be no claim if the properties had regular sized windows.

“These properties are impressive, and no doubt there are great advantages to be enjoyed in such extensive glassed views, but that in effect comes at a price in terms of privacy,” he ruled.

Residents could lower the solar blinds present in each flat, install privacy film, or even install tall plants in the winter gardens to obscure the view, he said. “[This] will, of course, detract from their living conditions, but not to an unacceptable degree,” he ruled.

OAP champ laid to rest

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The family of Les Alden MBE held a funeral for the longstanding Southwark Councillor last Thursday at St Nicholas Church in Old Shoreham, Sussex.

Born in 1943, Alden went to Oliver Goldsmith and Alleyns before reading chemistry at King’s College London and in the course of his career worked for Distillers

Epsom, South Eastern Gas board and Lambeth Council.

Alden joined the Labour Party on his sixteenth birthday when their agent visited to collect his father’s subs. He was an active member for 61 years, especially in St Giles ward, in Camberwell, where he was elected as a Southwark councillor in 1971 and served for 21 years. In 2015, he relocated to Shoreham.

During his tenure, he was chair of social services, chief whip and deputy leader. His

The claimants had complained of relentless intrusion from visitors to the popular attraction, saying they felt under constant surveillance.

One resident, Ian McFadyen, had complained that the “relentless intrusion” from tourists on the viewing platform – completed as part of an extension in 2016 – left him and his family feeling as if they were in a zoo.

His son, Alexander, claimed to have counted 84 people taking photographs into the apartment over a 90 minute period.

Another claimant, Claire Fearn, told the court that the first experience of people in the viewing gallery had left her “sick to the stomach.”

And a further claimant told the court that she went to the gallery and overheard a visitor saying the “rich bastards” who lived in the flats deserved the intrusion. daughter, Rebecca Allinson, described him as “passionate about the support needed of vulnerable children and the quality of care for the elderly.

“This carried on after his council work when Age Concern appointed him as an inspector of old people’s homes in the borough. He had very high standards and with dogged determination ensured that many of the care homes improved their standards.”

Alden was also a school governor for fifteen years at Peckham’s St Mary Magdalene Church of England School. He will be remembered by many for his support of Southwark’s People Care Association a voluntary organisation that puts on Christmas dinners for people struggling with loneliness. Alden was its main fundraiser and organiser, working with the charity for 40 years.

The councillor also helped set up the Camberwell Children’s Holiday Scheme, taking youngsters away whose family were unable to take them on holiday. This, and his work with Cambridge House and other charities led to him being awarded his MBE. In Camberwell, Alden and the then-vicar of St Giles in Camberwell restored the church’s crypt and set up its Friday Jazz night, still going strong after 25 years. The church had a special place in his life. It was where he was baptised, married his wife Pat, and sang in a choir.

Alden remained active in political life, serving on Adur District Council, where he was also held in great esteem. Adur Labour Group leader Cllr Lee Cowen said "Les was someone who passionately believed in Labour Party values, like no one I've ever met before.

“Socialism was in his core and he dedicated his life to public service. On a personal level he was my mentor and someone who believed in me. I will miss him greatly. Rest in peace my friend."

Alden passed away on January 8. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Boy thrown from tate can open his left hand

We keep fighting with our little knight - says French boy's family

The little boy thrown more than 100 feet from the Tate Modern in August can now open his left hand, say his parents.

The boy’s parents say their “little knight” is making progress on long journey to recovery after being thrown from the Tate Modern’s viewing platform by teenager Jonty Bravery.

Bravery, 18, admitted attempted murder in December – and told cops he wanted to do it so he could be on the TV. In their latest update about their six-year-old boy’s condition, the French boy’s parents said: “Hello everybody, one month has passed [since our last update] and we are more and more tired.

“But our son is still in progress.

He can now eat mash. We hope that he will be able to drink soon, with a

straw to start with.

“He cannot use his left arm but he manages to open his left hand when we ask him to do it two or three times in a row.

“We understand better and better what he tells us.”

However, their little boy is still suffering from the serious wounds Bravery inflicted on him during the random attack.

The family had been visiting the popular tourist attraction from France when Bravery struck, leaving the boy with a deep bleed on the brain among other injuries.

“However, he still cannot stand or walk, and has great difficulty staying focused and thinking,” the parents added.

“Thank you all for your help. We keep fighting with our little knight.”

The update was posted on a crowdfunding appeal set up by a stranger to pay for the family’s medical bills following the tragedy.

“Every little progress is so wonderful to read. What a little fighter he is,” said the page’s founder, Vicky Diplacto.

So far, well-wishers have raised nearly €200,000 for the boy and his family. Bravery is expected to be sentenced next month.

Inquiry over official allegedly called 'bent'

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Police are now investigating an alleged homophobic slur at Millwall’s home game against Reading on Saturday, January 18.

This is despite claims by some Lions fans that the supposed homophobic abuse was in fact supporters calling the official ‘bent’, to suggest he was unfairly favouring Reading.

Match officials reported the incident at around 3.30pm and play was briefly stopped. On Friday, police said they had launched a probe into

the claims.

“We take any allegation of abuse very seriously and are investigating this matter,” said DC Phil Dickson.

The club has said in a statement: “A comprehensive investigation into the alleged incident is well underway.

“Millwall Football Club has a zero-tolerance policy against discrimination of any kind. Any individual found guilty of such abuse at The Den is issued with an immediate lifetime ban.”

DC Dickson has also appealed for anyone with video footage or who had witnessed the incident to contact police on 020 8246 9386.

MILLWALL FANS like to chant ‘No one likes us’ – but there’s a group of kids in a school in East Africa who probably disagree.

Last month, Bijilo Lower Basic School in The Gambia received a donation of Lions gear, clothes and educational books.

It was organised by Millwall fan Jacqui Knight, a 50-year-old mum of two from Penge in south-east London.

Jacqui posted a video on Facebook last year of the schoolkids singing ‘Let ‘em come’, which went viral online.

Jacqui was originally in Bijilo for a friend’s wedding in May 2019, and hoped to find a local school to donate t-shirts she had brought with her. The school was near her hotel, and after the conversation turned to football Jacqui grabbed the opportunity to teach the kids Millwall songs and chants.

It didn’t end there as on her return home Jacqui posted a plea on Twitter for more donations and she was overwhelmed by the response after the interest took off online.

Jacqui raised money through a Justgiving page for her return trip, and

“Millwall fans are without doubt the best fans in the world, I am very proud to be part of such an exclusive family. It was a totally wonderful experience and one I will never forget for as long as I live. I felt extremely humbled and appreciated like never before, I really did feel the love – and we sang Millwall songs!”

And Jacqui is determined the touching story is not going to end there.

“I couldn't leave The Gambia without connecting the kids, so hopefully over the following months, children from two schools from the UK will link up via email with the schoolchildren of Bijilo Lower Basic School to form email ‘penpal’ friendships.”

GP group off special measures

Half-a-million spent on Aylesbury boiler patch-up but residents are still shivering and out-of-pocket

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Elderly residents on Walworth's Aylesbury Estate are struggling to find the cash keep their pay-as-you-go energy meters running, with the estate's boilers now obsolete.

Despite half a million pounds spent on preventative work before the winter, the old boilers are so past their use-by-date that the News has been told engineers have finally admitted defeat.

A series of six temporary boilers are now piping hot water directly into the estate but service remains patchy.

The big question facing the council is whether it should completely overhaul the system amid mounting pressure from distressed residents, but with regeneration of the estate not to be completed for over a decade.

The problem is exacerbated by the number stuck using pay-as-you-go energy cards and keys, rather than having a direct debit.

The council is giving fan heaters to residents to stay warm, but these are effectively useless for anyone without cash in hand to top up.

Even if residents do get a rebate or compensation it is paid into their housing account and can’t be put towards a future top-up.

The News understands the Aylesbury’s ward councillors have flagged their concerns with Tooley Street, worried vulnerable people are being pushed into debt or left unable to use the plugin heaters.

Jackie Summerford lives in Calverton.

Her hot water has been off and on in the last two months, but she’s had no heating in that time; including Christmas Day. She thinks the council should just find the cash to pay for a new system, even if the estate is being pulled down.

“How can you fix the boiler when it’s f*****? You are still paying your rent and they are still getting money from us.

“Just because it’s coming down doesn’t mean everything shouldn’t be done properly. We are still here.”

Jackie got her £149 winter fuel allowance in December. It’s now all gone on her top-up key. As previously

reported, the only rebate she received for problems last year was the paltry sum of £2.

Her friend Beverley Bleach lives in Gayhurst and is a carer for her mother, who has dementia.

She says residents often burn through £10 a day when the temperature drops.

Her last resort is sitting in her car with the heater blasting out.

“I had Christmas dinner in my pyjamas and dressing gown and socks and a blanket, all wrapped up, because I didn’t want to sit in my coat.

“My preference was always for the estate to be refurbished with the right to return. But they’ve missed that opportunity now.

“I know people need homes and there’s a shortage, but the heating system can’t cope, so I think when someone leaves their home should just be boarded up.”

Kieron Williams, the housing and modernisation cabinet member at Southwark Council, commented: “As long as we have residents in the current Aylesbury blocks we‘ll continue to invest in them to make sure they are in decent condition and that the heating and hot water stay on.

“Our engineers worked round the clock to solve the latest problems across the estate, installing temporary boilers in every plant room with the first in place within hours.

“They are also working to restore full heat to two homes that have been having particular issues for a longer period.

“The poor design of the estate can make it hard to find and access the cause of some individual problems, however we are now accessing the roof and garages and hope to have full heat restored to these two homes quickly.”

He said recent breakdowns have been caused by leaks in pipework contaminating the water in the boilers.

“It is just one of the many reasons why the decision was taken to rebuild the estate so people have top quality new homes with modern, reliable and energy efficient heating systems.

“Again I offer our sincere apologies to residents affected by the heating and hot water issues and thank them for their patience while we work to find a solution.”

Health watchdog the Care Quality Commission (CQC) published its latest report on the provider last Thursday, January 23, after visits held on October 23 and 29 last year.

The CQC evaluates healthcare by rating specific services and wider areas of work.

Action taken since damning inspections in 2018 means its sites are now considered to be good in the “caring”, “safe” and “wellled” categories; previously red flagged after breaches in regulations.

But despite showing clear progress, every service still falls short of being labelled “good” and the group has been given the overall rating “requires improvement”.

The CQC says it now needs to increase its non-clinical staff’s safeguarding knowledge, continue increasing uptake of child immunisations, bowel and cervical cancer screening, and address patient feedback.

lower than the national average of 57 per cent, at just 41 per cent.

Inspectors highlighted that patients were treated with “compassion, dignity and respect”, there was still low patient satisfaction with the types of appointments they were offered.

The clinical Director and chair of Nexus’ executive board, Jane Doherty, who took up the role in January 2020, said: “The CQC has recognised that Nexus provides safe and effective care for our patients.

“There are good systems for managing patient test results, and that there is now evidence of shared learning from significant events across the service.

“We have established solid foundations for further improvement, and are confident we can reach better outcomes for the patient groups flagged up in the report.”

Her comments were echoed by Nexus’ chief officer, Daniela Valdes, who highlighted: “The CQC has remarked on our compassionate and inclusive approach to leadership, with staff feeling part of a whole organisation.

“This is at the core of our ‘One Nexus’ approach, which helped us centralise governance in infection control, clinical administration, quality improvement and staff records.

“We are grateful to our patients for their

support, and hope they will positively reflect on our improvements in the current round of the National GP survey and help us get back to ‘good’ with their engagement and feedback.”

In March 2019 Nexus was put into special measures after inspectors branded its care as “inadequate” over staff shortages, training gaps, lack of adequate administrative systems, and expired medical equipment.

Over 1,000 test results had been left in limbo due to administration failings – 442 of these were marked as ‘abnormal’. There were also more than 4,000 outstanding clinical tasks dating back to 2017.

Nexus was warned if it did not improve within six months it could ultimately face being stripped of its care contract.

Since then it has overhauled its management and centralised its administration systems so all practices operate in the same way. Inspectors say these problems have now been rectified.

Nexus merged eight previously independent surgeries in Southwark in 2016: Princess Street and Manor Place near Elephant and Castle, Surrey Docks Health Centre, Aylesbury Medical Centre, The Dun Cow Surgery in Bermondsey and Decima Street Surgery, Commercial Way Surgery and Artesian Health Centre. In total, its practices serve more than 74,000 patients.

Transport police release footage as they deal with a spate of robberies across the network

An attempted robbery at Elephant and Castle tube is among the unsolved crimes on the London rail network that police are appealing for the public to help solve.

Four women attempted to rob a 26-year-old woman at the station on December 8 at around 8.30pm, said British Transport Police.

Officers say they are dealing with a spate of robberies across the network,

with criminals typically targeting phones, laptops and AirPods.

They want to identify the four women in this picture in connection with the Elephant and Castle incident.

Other crimes being investigated by officers include a robbery of a man in his sixties at Covent Garden on December 6, and a seventeen-yearold boy being threatened with a knife on December 31 at Ruislip Manor Underground Station.

“Typically, we are seeing things like phones, laptops and AirPod wireless earphones being targeted by groups

of young people,” said DCI Sarah White.

“They will usually approach people travelling on their own, but on occasion these incidents have taken place in crowded and busy environments.”

She warned the public to keep their valuables secure when travelling, especially when using late night services.

National Grid is building a new network of cable tunnels, 32.5km in length, between Wimbledon and Crayford. The project, called London Power Tunnels (LPT), is essential to replace existing electricity cables in South London which are coming towards the end of their useful life. Mayor's annual budget to come before City Hall

T

his week, the Mayor’s annual budget will come before the London Assembly, setting out City Hall’s spending plans for the year following the Mayoral Election in May.

This comes against the backdrop of the multitude of challenges that London has been put up against due to the impact of a decade of Government cuts.

Unsurprisingly, at the top of the list of City Hall’s priorities is tackling violent crime. This is a national issue that has devastated the lives of too many Londoners and requires a robust response from all fronts across our community.

This Budget and those passed in the last few years, have recognised the importance of early intervention initiatives in preventing violent crime.

Projects launched through the Mayor’s Young Londoners Fund have benefitted a significant number of young people in Southwark and across the capital- helping to provide an alternative and more

positive path for those vulnerable to getting caught up in crime.

We have also seen additional investment in City Hall’s Violence Reduction Unit (VRU), which operates as a public health approach model to address the complex causes of crime at their roots.

Since its launch in 2018, the VRU has been integral in bolstering the work of community groups, schools and the health sector in clamping down on youth and domestic violence.

Robust enforcement is also an imperative part of the solution to violent crime. This is why the Mayor and the Met have called upon the Government to fund the recruitment of 6,000 new police officers for London over the next few years.

Due to continuing targeted investment from City Hall, police numbers are tentatively beginning to recover and there are now over 31,000 officers on the streets of our capital.

However, the Met is still feeling the strain of the huge tranche of cuts that have been imposed upon them by the Government in previous

Crime of the century?

A rather unusual entry featured on the court lists this week.

As February approaches, the council is gearing up for its

years- totalling almost £1 billion.

It is projected that an additional £480 million of funding is needed for the Met to be able to effectively cope with its financial pressures, but last week, we only saw £200 million of investment pledged by the Government to cover policing in London this year.

Aside from policing, the Mayor is using his Budget to ensure the delivery of the genuinely affordable homes that Londoners desperately need.

Last year, a record-breaking number of affordable homes were started with City Hall’s support, and we are starting to see the benefits of this locally.

However, to truly get to grips with London’s housing crisis, the Greater London Authority has calculated that the capital needs seven times the amount of dedicated funding from the Government than it currently provides.

With expenditure approaching £10 billion, Transport for London (TfL) makes up the lion’s share of the £17 billion Budget.

This covers all major infrastructure projects and schemes- from completing Crossrail, tackling air pollution to investment in the Cycleway 4 highway which, on completion, will run through Tooley Street and Jamaica Road.

Hot spots in Southwark

Southwark has lots of green open spaces for the borough’s residents to enjoy. But alongside wholesome activities, the parks have also been attracting some seedier customers.

A number of parks have been tipped on dogging sites as prime spots for the x-rated activity.

Among them are Burgess Park.

According to one punter, the redesign of the park has led to a number of prime spots for people to choose from, should they wish.

Surrey Quays Leisure Park also features, with aficionados noting which spots are not caught on CCTV.

New lakeside café opens in Southwark Park Dog friendly cafe, open 9am – 4:30pm, but dogs only allowed 9am to 11am. So not really dog friendly then. And charges to park the car when we get there, so I can walk around the park with my dog, at £2 per hour, that would cost me £28 per week on average. So I will not be using park or cafe anymore.

Well done whoever planned and signed this off. I will stick to walking along the river walks and making coffee and sandwiches at home.

Dual crossword The true scandal of our front page story is not that taxpayers are spending so much for a child's taxi fare

I

t defies common sense. That’s how the mother of a deaf Bermondsey girl describes the family’s predicament that we report on in this week’s issue. We think readers will agree.

Council taxpayers are shelling out more than £30,000 a year – more than the national average salary – in taxi fares alone for Daisy to attend a deaf-specialist school in St Albans.

The fee could leap yet higher when Daisy’s younger brother attends the school later this year.

As it is, the family are already using a relative to drive the cab, which lowers costs.

Instead, the Moreton family want to move their council housing to St Albans, which would save a lot of money.

But far more importantly, it would save a young girl the stress of commuting for as long as three hours from classes – time she could and should be spending playing with her friends.

Mum Sophie tells us that the journey takes its toll on her profoundly deaf nine-year-old. “She's so tired and fed-up,” she says. “Daisy doesn’t want to carry on like this until she’s sixteen.”

The family’s situation is unusual because it has a very simple solution. Southwark and St Albans could agree a council housing swap which would solve this all at a stroke.

According to Southwark town hall, it is St Albans who are dragging their feet. “[We] offered a reciprocal arrangement with St Albans Council, but unfortunately they have declined this option so far,” says Cllr Kieron Williams.

We asked St Albans Council about this. It gave only a very short response that discussions were ongoing. This only makes us suspect that it is looking after its budget rather than acting in the best interest of the Moreton family.

So we will continue to ask them about the state of these “discussions” going forward.

The true scandal of this story is not that Southwark taxpayers are spending so much money for a child’s education. No amount is too much for a child’s schooling.

It is that a family is left in limbo by maddening bureaucracy – and a nine-year-old child is paying the real price.

Welcome to the end

‘Hello, Brightline: You’re through to someone you can talk to’ is the cheery greeting for callers to the office where the walls are covered in platitude posters: Together Everyone Achieves More preached one, writes Michael Holland.

Frances, the Team Leader, believes in every pointless phrase pinned up and continually ‘motivates’ her team of three with fake praise and ‘inspirational’ guidance, but the thin veneer of smiles at Brightline hides depths of darkness.

In Sam Steiner’s You Stupid Darkness, Joey is the kid straight from school doing work experience, with a lot to learn.

Angie is the excitable girl who takes pleasure in the simpler things in life, like watching tissues being pulled from a box. Jon, the cynical one, guzzles instant coffee granules straight from the jar for a caffeine hit, is tired of his job, his life and the world in general.

And the world outside the office is in disaster mode. It seems that all the fires and floods, and general climate change catastrophes, plus Trump and a Britain

broken by Brexit, have all been cast as one phenomena in this play - The Apocalypse.

The staff arrive through gales and storms wearing gas masks to keep out disease and toxic fumes, then set about telling callers that everything is going to be okay.

They attempt to inspire hope in the minds of others as they try to survive in a world with none.

Slowly, gradually, the end of days scenario outside creeps inside. The funders are closing down offices, the old kettle blows all the electrics; the winds blow in a window and tears all the posters down; rainstorms find a way through to flood the office. And as life worsens outside so we hear more and more of the lives of the staff. Oh yes, they sell hope over the phone when at work, but their realities are not so hopeful; two in relationships are not happy; one lives with their sick dog and the other lives with their sick mum in a flat above the estranged father. One is having twins and none of them understand why she would do that.

Yes, there are many moments of light

Hayward Gallery’s HENI Project Space presents the first solo exhibition in the UK of Turkish artist Nevin Aladağ, bringing together recent video and sculptural works that explore sound, rhythm and music.

Not all welcome at The Welkin The Welkin would be a great play if it was at least one hour shorter and if I could have understood what was being said through the mumbling of country accents. Other than that there is a lot going for Lucy Kirkwood’s new work, writes Michael Holland.

Set in 18th century rural Suffolk, The Welkin opens with silhouetted women working in pigeon holes, putting them firmly in their restricted place in society from the start. Next, a candlelit Sally and her partner, who was happy with his job of ‘scaring rooks’, discuss murder and there being no God. They are arrested, charged, convicted and he is executed. Lizzie (Maxine Peake), the village midwife, is called upon to ascertain if Sally is pregnant, which would save her from the gallows. Alas, Lizzie faced immediate opposition from a panel of 11 women who

very much believe in God and in Sally’s evilness. Lizzie, on the other hand, knows better than that and she sees her role as convincing the jury that poor Sally was ‘tried in a cold room by cold men on the word of a cold husband’. She had her work cut out.

Having already been found guilty, this part of the proceedings was treated as a simple task that should not take long, hence the women not being allowed food or drink as a way to hurry them up and not get comfortable. Plus, they had been summoned from their homes and away from their housework - There was washing and cooking to get back to, so time was of the essence, never mind a young woman’s life at stake.

However, Sally Poppy did not endear herself to those who could save her. In fact she provoked them and had them believing she had the Devil in her.

Outside, a crowd of baying men waited at the gallows for their next female victim. Inside, after much scrunching and pulling of Sally’s breasts a little milk was produced as evidence of her being with child. Hallelujah, some cried just as soot from the fire contaminated the liberating liquid, turning it black.

After an eternity of the women going to and fro, locked in a room, a male doctor was

called in to make a final decision. Yay! cried the defendant, half the jury and half the audience as they saw an end in sight.

But no, Act 2 was the time for revelations, and none of them good. Dark secrets came out, the mute spoke, someone was amazingly recognised from a time before and short anecdotes were dragged out into long, unnecessary yarns. Enough now. Then a man revealed one of the secrets to the outside world and another half hour was drawn from this play for no other reason than to have another storyline meander around the room. Outside, the menfolk were getting restless. Inside, the audience were looking at watches.

The Welkin is very well written and very worthy but there was nothing to cheer about after the first 90 minutes. Yes, it shows how male power has been around since time began and that real equality still has a long way to go, but this work would benefit from a good edit.

This is very much an ensemble piece but Ria Zmitrowicz sizzles as Sally Poppy.

Nevin Aladağ: Fanfare includes the artist’s playful video work Traces (2015), an audiovisual portrait across three projections that depicts the urban landscape of Stuttgart in Germany, the city of her childhood. Here a series of instruments are played, not by musicians, but by the city itself: a tambourine bounces down a deserted street; an accordion hangs from a lamppost; a violin revolves on a spinning merry-go-round. By establishing playful and contingent musical situations, Aladağ creates a poetic portrait of the urban landscape.

Another three-channel video work, Session (2013), features Arabic, Indian, and African percussion instruments that are similarly played by the environment, this time Sharjah’s urban and desert areas.

As with Traces (2015), key interactions with aspects of the locale such as roads, plants and sand, result in a soundtrack that is neither deliberate composition nor entirely random in occurrence. Originally commissioned for the Sharjah Biennial (2013), the instruments depicted originate from countries that comprise much of the workforce in the United Arab Emirates, combining ideas of mapping, infrastructure, and labour with cultural heritage.

Also included in the exhibition are a pair of sculptural relief artworks comprising Tusch [Fanfare] (2015) that feature large staves with musical notation for instrumental

relief, but this merely highlights the hopelessness and disintegration of society. In the end, the Brightline team realise they just have themselves.

The multi-conversations often cancel each other out and become confusing, but Steiner has written a great play here, which doesn’t register straightaway. You Stupid Darkness creeps up on you. After a while you start to think about the planet’s future, getting old and how many people are actually there for you, and for some it will be just a handful of friends who will sit round a table in the dark telling you that everything is going to be okay.

Great performances from all, though I particularly enjoyed Lydia Larson’s Angie, and Andy Rush as Jon. You Stupid Darkness! is on at the Southwark Playhouse, 77-85 Newington Causeway, London, SE1 6BD until 22nd February.

Fanfare for the common artist flourishes. The notes are made with bronze castings of 17th century cannon balls, reminding of the varied uses of such music including military marches. Between 12 and 24 February, Aladağ’s video Top View (2012), which captures the infectious rhythm of dancing feet, will also be on show in the Hayward Gallery foyer. Nevin Aladağ was born in 1972 in Van, Turkey and lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Her artwork has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions at international institutions including San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), San Francisco, USA; Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt, Germany; Haus der Kunst, Munich, Germany; Museum Tinguely, Basel, Switzerland; Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland; ARTER Vehbi Koc Foundation, Istanbul, Turkey; Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Japan; and Museo Tamayo, Mexico. She also participated in the 11th Istanbul Biennial (2009), Sharjah Biennial (2013), documenta 14 in Kassel, Germany and Athens, Greece, and the Venice Biennale (both 2017).

Nevin Aladağ: Fanfare is curated by Dr Cliff Lauson, Senior Curator, with Thomas Sutton, Curatorial Assistant, Hayward Gallery. It is a free exhibition at Hayward Gallery’s HENI Project Space. The show is also part of Imagine Children's Festival (12-23 February 2020). Nevin Aladağ will take part in an introduction and Q&A with Dr Cliff Lauson to open the Private View on Wednesday 12 February from 7pm.

Proper SE16 boozer I like the Blacksmiths Arms because it has that ‘boozer’ look and has maintained its status as a good local while many other Downtown pubs have gone under And in this day and age that is not easy, writes Michael Holland...

I was there with best friend Kay who had actually Unfriended me on Facebook just hours earlier! At 7pm the pub was already busy and we were given the choice of a table in the bar where the live music was soon about to begin, or in the dining area. We chose the latter where our conversation would not be competing with the singer.

Iced water and menus were brought to the table by Stevie who went through the specials. I’m a sucker for specials because I know it is when the chef can show off. Thus, with so many excellent options I ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc to help me think about my choices.

We shared starters of Lamb Tacos and Prawn Tempura. Surprisingly I preferred the tacos; the lamb was exquisite, but it was the little splodges of spicy mayo and avocado puree that lifted that dish out of ordinary street food fare and into the realms of something else. ‘Ooh!’ said Kay, ‘I didn’t think I’d like those,’ as she

took the last taco and enthusiastically wiped it through the spicy mayo.

The live music had begun, and what a treat it was. Can you imagine the adopted son of Jeff Buckley and Nick Drake doing contemporary stuff in a Peaky Blinders cap? Jason Darling was all of that. We loved it. Between songs me and Kay discussed our mums and their ailments, and Kay’s mum won. Just as I was going to tell of my own ache and pain Stevie arrived with the main courses.

Kay had chosen the rather lusciouslooking Fish & Chips. The fish was hanging over the edges of a large plate, and the hand cut chips looked perfect.

There was a pleasing crunch as she cut into the crisp batter. I had the special: Lobster Thermidor and Chips. Well, it is SE16 so If I’m going posh I’m taking chips with me! And, yes, the lobster was special. It is a food you spoil yourself with and I was spoilt.

There is also something special about the Blacksmiths that reminds the older generation of their past, and a younger generation of what they missed, while all the time providing what is wanted right now. There is good ale, good food, live music on Friday nights, families and couples enjoying conversation, and

the clientele is a lovely mix of old and new Rotherhithe, plus the occasional influx of international tourist popping in from the Hilton Hotel next door.

Next to us was an American enjoying his time feeling like a ‘real Brit’, and I was accosted by a Welsh couple with, ‘You sound like a local so how can we spend our weekend?’. Safe to say that they will be now visiting the Brunel Museum, Southwark Park Galleries, Tower Bridge and every pub along the SE16 riverfront!

After a decent interval we still weren’t ready to tackle a dessert each so we went for something else off the specials board

that we could share: Warm Raspberry & Mascarpone Tart with Vanilla Ice Cream. Just typing those words brings the lusciousness all back to me. And once again the chef had shone. It was everything you desired from a dessert sweet, sour, hot and cold. Job done.

Pubs are struggling all over the country and Rotherhithe has lost too many in recent years. The Blacksmiths Arms is the perfect example of what is good in a local, so long may it reign.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable works to be carried out it made an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

Whilst works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in: (a) Fair Street, at it’s junction with Tooley Street (b) Alleyn Road, between No’s 40 and No’s 50 (c) Pelier Street at it’s junction of Dartford Street (d) Gedling Place, between Druid Street and Stanworth Street (e) Stoney Street, 10m either side of railway bridge

Whilst the works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in: Rodney Place, between Munton Road and Elba Place.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that on 30 January 2020 it has made the above orders under sections 6 and 124 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, or in the case of the cycle tracks order, under section 3 of the Cycle Tracks Act 1984, as amended, following the procedure set out in the Cycle Tracks Regulations 1984.

2. The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable highway works to be carried out, it intends to make an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

Whilst the works are in progress, or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in: (a) Hollydale Road, between Evelina Road and Gibbon Road (b) Rodney Road, between Flint Street and Rodney Place (c) Steedman Street, at it’s junction with Walworth Road and the west corner of Stanhope House.

The alternative route for (a) Gibbon Road, Evelina Road. (b) East Street, Old Kent Road, New Kent Road, Elephant & Castle, Newington Butts, Walworth Road, Heygate Street.

Rodney Place as applicable. (c) Walworth Road, Hampton Street, Steedman Street.

4.

The existing one way working in Hampton Street, between Walworth Road and Steedman Street, will be made two way for access and egress purposes for 2(c)

5.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

6.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

7.

The works will be in operation for (a) 17th February – 7th March. (b) 14th – 16th February. (c) 17th February – 14th March.

Hamlet leave Princes Park as paupers

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET are showing few signs they can drag themselves out of relegation trouble after they lost 1-0 against Dartford at Princes Park last weekend.

It was a fourth league game without a win and Gavin Rose’s side are just four points above the relegation zone.

The Hamlet were under pressure from the start against a side chasing promotion from National League South.

But the visitors had a chance on the break in the fifth minute when Ben Chapman crossed from the right and the ball was cleared to Nyren Clunis on the edge of the box, but Alhaji Sesay got down well to save.

Shamir Mullings had a shot deflected for a corner and Sesay saved Chapman’s free-kick, before the hosts took over.

Goalkeeper Charlie Grainger tipped Tyrique Hyde’s header over the crossbar in the tenth minute and then produced a brilliant save to deny Elliott Romain five minutes later. The ball looked to be going in before Grainger leapt across his goal to keep out Romain’s header.

Clunis gained possession to drive at the home defence 21 minutes in, but he was halted by left-back Craig Braham-Barrett’s covering tackle.

Stans clear off the Rust Sports Reporter sports@southwarknews.co.uk STANSFELD GOT back to winning ways with a 1-0 win over high-flying Rusthall last week.

In a thrilling affair at Foxbury Avenue, Rusthall needed the three points to go top of the league and Stansfeld were looking to go back into the top six.

The game started at a frantic pace with both teams looking to gain dominance.

The game sparked into life in the 30th minute when a clearance from Lennie Wise was misjudged by a Rusthall defender and Jake Britnell latched onto the loose ball and was through on goal. But after he was dragged back and pulled him to the floor, Rusthall were lucky to keep eleven men on the pitch after the referee consulted his linesman before showing a yellow card.

In the 40th minute, Britnell found Freddie Cray, whose cushioned header fell to Macey Malyon and he kept his cool to slot home to put Stansfeld 1-0 up.

Moments after the restart, Rusthall were reduced to ten men and Stansfeld’s Greg Summersby also received his marching orders for a late challenge on the halfway line.

In the second half Rusthall went on the attack which played into Stansfeld’s hands as they were happy to hit their opponents on the break.

Although the game was being played at a relentless pace, Stansfeld limited Rusthall to very few chances after the break thanks to a superb defensive performance led by the magnificent Casey Killilea and Wise.

Stansfeld could have added a second late in the game when a ball across the box found Billy Jolley unmarked but his strike back across goal went narrowly wide.

Stansfeld saw out the game to gain a hard-fought 1-0 win.

Man of the match: Casey Killilea Stansfeld’s reserves won 2-1 win away to Peckham Town with goals from Billy Jolley and Rob Hughes.

The 3rds secured a good draw away against Drummond Athletic, with Cameron Macmillan getting the goal.

The Hamlet lost their way a little bit in the remaining minutes of the half as they didn’t have the creativity to trouble the home defence.

Dartford could have gone further ahead but Hyde and McQueen failed to hit the target from good positions.

Rose sent on Lionel Ainsworth for Dylan Kearney for the second half.

It made little difference. Hyde was presented with an excellent chance in the 48th minute when he was sent through on goal, but he tried to round Grainger and shot wide.

Dulwich had a half-chance moments later when David Ijaha picked out Mullings but Sesay easily saved the striker’s attempt.

Former Hamlet player Sanchez Ming shot wide as Dartford comfortably controlled the game. Dulwich had one more opportunity when Jeffrey Monakana's cross was flicked on by Connor Hunte, but Ijaha couldn't make contact at the far post.

Meanwhile, Mullings has extended his loan stay at the club until the end of February.

Since joining from Aldershot in December, Mullings has scored three goals and has also twice been named in the National League South team of the week.

Dulwich host Chelmsford City at Champion Hill this Saturday. Kick-off is 3pm.

Blades’ sharp edge ends Lions’ hopes

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk THERE WILL be no FA Cup heroics to add to the archive this season as Millwall limped meekly out of the competition last weekend.

Goals from Mo Besic and Oliver Norwood sealed a place in the next round for a Sheffield United side that didn’t really have to get out of second gear.

Lions boss Gary Rowett handed rightback James Brown and midfielder Billy Mitchell their first-team opportunities and they certainly didn’t let anyone down.

It was 22-year-old Brown’s first home start and he was defensively solid even if his attacking output didn’t match. But that’s not a surprise given his lack of senior competitive games in the last three years.

Mitchell showed his maturity and composure again and it will only bring him on playing against the likes of the two experienced Blades goal-scorers.

Other than that there were few positives for the hosts. Millwall had only one corner in the whole game which tells its own story of how they didn’t put the visiting side under any concerted pressure.

That moment to get the crowd off their feet never came, unlike in previous seasons when Premier League sides Everton, Leicester, Watford and Bournemouth were sent away from South Bermondsey after chastening experiences.

Millwall had really only one good chance, and it came early on when Aiden O’Brien initially did well to read the flight of the ball that caught out Phil Jagielka.

O’Brien ran on and in from the left, but his attempted curler into the far corner was tame and Dean Henderson made an easy save.

The home side would not have been happy with their defending for the opening goal, as Mitchell and Murray Wallace were both drawn to Kieron Freeman’s run, opening up the space for Besic to curl a brilliant left-footed shot across Bart Bialkwoski into the far left corner.

Chris Wilder’s side went two goals up with a neat move and Norwood fired into the other corner from 20 yards.

Billy Sharp, the game’s best attacking player, should have made it three when he ran through on the left of the box, but Bialkowski saved with his legs.

Millwall couldn’t muster any response, and are now left to concentrate on the league for the rest of the season.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk TOM BRADSHAW believes Millwall’s FA Cup defeat to Sheffield United could turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

The Lions already have seven fixtures in February, and it would have been eight had they drawn with the Blades.

The sides were in deadlock after an hour and had it stayed that way it would also have meant three trips to Yorkshire in a week.

There are just five league games left after the February fixture schedule, an intense month that starts at Sheffield Wednesday this Saturday.

“It’s coming to the latter stages of the season and we have got a small squad, there’s only so much rotation the gaffer can do,” Bradshaw said.

“Every extra game that’s thrown into an already busy schedule is tough on the legs. It’s a silver lining in some ways [to go out of the FA Cup], especially as we’re not going to Yorkshire three games on the bounce.

“We can focus on the league now.

“Our character is one of our strongest qualities, the philosophy we’ve got and the team spirit we’ve got in the changing room. It’s the best group lads I’ve been with.

“Everyone works hard for each other but at the same time if someone’s maybe a little bit off it in training the lads will let them know. Everyone’s pushing everyone to be as good as they can be, but also supporting each other.

“The league table doesn’t lie, we’re in that position for a reason and have earned the points. We’re in a great position but we’re not going to change what we do. Ever since the new gaffer came in we’ve been in great form.

“Everyone is working hard for everyone and we’re just playing with confidence. We believe we can go anywhere in this league and get a win.”

That small squad has been stretched by injuries and suspensions recently.

That has given Billy Mitchell, 18, and James Brown, 22, their first-team chances.

Bradshaw remembers his debut almost ten years ago and, similar to Millwall now, how a group of seasoned professionals who weren’t afraid to dish out some harsh words set the example.

“I came on in the 75th minute against Crewe for Shrewsbury and I scored twice in fifteen minutes,” Bradshaw recalls. “I was only seventeen. I’ve still got the ball from the game, even though I didn’t get a hat-trick. The gaffer [Paul Simpson] gave it to me.

“That was one of the best days of my life.

“It was quite an old-school team then.

We had Dean Holden who was rightback and is now assistant at Bristol City. We had Graham Coughlan, Kevin McIntyre, an old-school group of lads.

“It was great for me looking back because it pushes you to get to the levels they’re at and kick on from there.

You need that as a young lad, you need to have a thick skin because it’s men’s football. You’ve got to acclimatise to it quickly.

“I’ve always had quite a thick skin.

There’s no bad intention behind it, it’s all to improve you as a player. And it does if you have the right attitude. If you’re not on it you’ve got to expect that you’re going to get told that you’re not on it. It’s all about development and growing as a person and a player.

“Having the older heads there helped to guide me in the right direction and it helped my career.”

Bradshaw moved from Shrewsbury to Walsall and then Barnsley, before a switch to Millwall as their then-record signing in August 2018.

The Lions are currently busy working on securing their most important players on long-term deals. Bradshaw has put down his roots in south-east London with his girlfriend Alex and their baby, born last year. His brother Dan, 29, who is also a striker, with nonleague Sheppey United, lives nearby and is joining the police force in April.

Bradshaw is delighted with how things have worked out on and off the pitch.

He said: “Me and my girlfriend have just bought a house, we’re pretty settled.

Alex’s family are all here and my brother is just down the road as well.

“It’s a place that we love and we feel like we’ve settled here really well. I don’t see it changing anytime in the future.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IF SHAUN Hutchinson sees out his latest contract he will have spent seven seasons at Millwall – and he knew from the start the club was the right fit for him.

Hutchinson, 29, joined the Lions on a free transfer from Fulham in the summer of 2016 after a conversation with former Millwall boss Neil Harris convinced him he could “thrive” in the environment at Calmont Road.

Former Motherwell defender Hutchinson had played just eleven times for Fulham in 2015-16, and his first season in south London was also injury-hit as he was restricted to only 22 appearances in all competitions.

But he started Millwall’s last four games of the season, scoring the winner at Bristol Rovers to nudge Southend out of sixth place with five minutes of the regular League One campaign remaining.

Hutchinson this week signed a new long-term deal to potentially take him past his 32nd birthday.

“I’ll have been with the club seven years and hopefully the next three-anda-half years are just as enjoyable as the ones I’ve had so far,” Hutchinson told the News.

“I’m delighted, I’m grateful and thankful to the club for giving me the opportunity. I’m really enjoying my time

here, ever since I’ve walked through the door.

“It’s been successful and I’m really looking forward to pushing on. I’m sensing good things at the club at the moment and that was one of the reasons I was keen to get the contract signed. It’s promising, there are lot of good vibes here.

“When I first came to the club the Championship was where I wanted to be, I thought it was my level at the time.

Unfortunately that didn’t work out, but I spoke to Neil Harris and sensed similarities in conditions with other clubs I thrived at.

“It’s a family club, there are a lot of good, honest lads. New signings come in and it builds morale. It’s a nice closeknit club, a hardworking club. I thought I could kick on here and I’ve been pretty happy where I’ve got to since signing here.”

After that difficult first season with the club, in his second Hutchinson played every minute of the Championship campaign as the Lions went close to a play-off place before tailing off in the last two games and finishing eighth.

Asked if he had a high point in his Millwall career, Hutchinson mentioned securing promotion at Wembley, and that goal against Bristol Rovers.

But it’s the feeling he gets on big days at The Den that will leave the lasting impression when his career is over.

He continued: “There was only one aim when I came in, and that was promotion.

I needed to be in the Championship and we got up first time of asking.

“That felt more of a relief, to be honest, even for the fans. We knew where we needed to be. It was like, ‘right, we’ve got back to where we should be’. It was a good celebration but the expectations were met. Obviously [being in danger

of] not making the play-offs and then scoring that goal is up there.

“It’s just the atmosphere of games and looking forward to playing in them when you’re being successful and chasing something.

“Some of the atmospheres at The Den, when we finished eighth in the end, and playing in those games is something I’ll always cherish and look back on. The Den is something special when you’re playing for something, whether it be a local rival or a cup run or you’re pushing for the play-offs. It’s incredible and it’s something that I just love playing in.

“Hopefully we can kick on and have some more of those days.

“The way last season panned out was a low moment for me. But it made me determined to come back this season.

I worked hard in the off-season, really trained hard and did a lot of stuff to benefit myself. And it’s paying off now.”

Millwall manager Gary Rowett praised Hutchinson this week, saying the defender is better than he thought when he took over from Harris.

Hutchinson appreciated that, but there is one thing the centre-back prioritises above kind words.

“It’s nice for the manager to praise me, but the biggest praise he can give me is playing me every week,” Hutchinson said. “At the moment I am doing that, and I’m thankful for that.

“I’m working hard on the training ground and listening to all of his ideas and taking them in. I’m looking to

improve and be more of the player that he sees in me.

“Maybe people thought, ‘it’s Millwall and a one-season wonder’ [in 2017-18].

But as every season has gone on the ambition has gone up with the signings, more money has been spent on players.

“Getting the gaffer in here was massive. I think the expectations for the club have gotten bigger. I know Millwall are more of an established club in the Championship than in League One, but we’re looking up a lot more than down.

That’s a great sign.

“When he heard about the club he obviously heard it was a good set of lads, but I think even he was surprised how close we are. It is something special.

Every single one of the lads has an input on a daily basis on everything.

“Everyone gets on, everyone chats, there’s no one isolated. It’s really good at the moment, it’s a great environment to be successful on the pitch.

“At the same time it does depend on results as well, if you’re doing well it’s a little bit easier. When you’re struggling it’s a bit stressful and everyone feels it.

“You see players going to clubs for big money and they don’t kick on. You have bunches of nationalities at different places and maybe they don’t gel. It becomes a bit separated.

“But here I couldn’t ask for any more in the dressing room. And a lot of it comes from the skipper [Alex Pearce] as well, I’m sure you’ve heard. Since he’s come in he’s been brilliant, he’s a top, top club captain and he sets the tone.”

The visitors led 2-0 and when the side were led back out at the start of the second half by Alex Pearce they were booed. Louder boos followed moments later when referee Darren England jogged towards the centre circle to restart the game.

Leeds had been cut but rather than weakening them it only seemed to make them stronger, and they delivered a second-half performance of devastating power, pace and precision.

England had made some odd decisions in the first half. He first raised the ire of the home support when Stuart Dallas’s shot was pushed around the post by Bart Bialkowski.

Millwall players jogged back to defend the corner, but instead England indicated a goal-kick. The replay on the big screen to confirm Bialkowski’s vital touch further enraged the majority of Elland Road.

Part of their fury was provoked by their own side, who made a panicked start as Millwall pressed them high and won the ball back three times in as many minutes to charge towards goal.

Shaun Hutchinson headed Millwall in front from Jed Wallace’s corner in the fourth minute.

England made that error soon after

as Leeds piled forward and even that early in the game they were only leaving Liam Cooper back.

But Leeds had another lapse in the 22nd minute when Ryan Woods beat Helder Costa on the left wing before just about keeping the ball from going over the sideline. The hosts howled for a throw-in and the home players momentarily hesitated. Woods certainly didn’t, nor did Jon Dadi Bodvarsson when he received the pass in the inside-left position. He made a beeline for goal and tumbled after being tripped by Ezgjan Alioski.

Walllace had a wait as Leeds protested, but he kept his composure to drill into the bottom left corner from 12 yards. As the Lions players celebrated some objects thrown from the East Stand landed close to them.

Wallace handed something to the referee.

Despite England’s decisions and the crowd’s reaction to those decisions, Millwall’s double strike inflicted little psychological damage on their opponents and Leeds came forward in wave after wave that wore down the visiting defensive bulwark.

Even at 2-0 there were few in the ground who felt this game was over.

The way Leeds were playing suggested Millwall would have to produce their best defensive performance of the season. The Lions had been beaten 4-0 earlier in the season by a Fulham side that recorded the highest number of passes in a Championship game since

Opta started collecting those statistics.

This was different. Fulham had moved Millwall over and back across the pitch with their passing probing for openings. Leeds simply went to skewer the away side.

If the Lions were to hang on then not giving away anything early in the second half was crucial. But they could hold out for only three minutes when Patrick Bamford pounced at the back post after Bilakowski had produced a superb save to deny Jack Harrison following a corner.

Leeds attacked with savage intensity and Millwall were having to produce clearance after clearance. It was desperation stuff and they couldn’t find an answer how to stop Leeds. It was like trying to solve a Rubik’s cube while being posed complex mathematical questions...with Pablo Hernandez running rings around you.

Despite Millwall’s advantage there was an inevitability how this would turn out. As drizzle descended on Elland Road Millwall couldn’t keep the water pumped out.

It was the effervescent Hernandez who equalised, when his shot from 22 yards appeared to take a slight deflection on its way into the bottom left corner.

Elland Road erupted again, this time in celebration and defiance.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IT WAS a busy day at Millwall on Monday as the club completed the permanent transfer of Bart Bialkowski from Ipswich, and agreed contract extensions with Shaun Williams and Shaun Hutchinson.

Millwall boss Gary Rowett claimed his side should have had a late penalty when Matt Smith’s shirt appeared to be tugged.

Rowett hinted there had been some other influence on England.

“It was a difficult game for us for different reasons,” Rowett said.

“Should I say...there was a little bit of pressure on [England] at half-time. I won’t go into too much detail about that. It wasn’t any of the coaching staff or the playing staff, put it that way.

“Then the fans put him under pressure because that’s what they do here.

"Listen, we do the same at home. I thought first half we might have had the rub of the green with one or two decisions. Second half they certainly got a lot of the decisions.

“There was a pull on Smudge in the box earlier and the lad’s let go of his shirt so it probably wasn’t a penalty, but the one later was.

“You’re going to be brave to give that in the 90th minute.”

Rowett said Leeds showed that his side need to get to the next level. But there are obvious constraints. Leeds showed their pulling power when they quickly replaced Jack Clarke with Ian Poveda from Manchester City and they also signed Jean-Kévin Augustin from Champions League RB Leipzig. The striker has also played for Paris St Germain and Monaco, saying something, as if it needed to be said again, about the different financial and even cultural planes these clubs are operating on.

Yet Marcelo Bielsa’s side had lost three games in all competitions, leading their fans to worry they were going to collapse again. Last season, they lost ten of their last 21 league games.

Bielsa had insisted he would replace

influential suspended midfielder Kalvin Phillips with centre-back Ben White, but as the sides lined up for the kick-off it was obvious it had been an attempt to hoodwink the opposition.

Bialkowski, 32, signed for an undisclosed fee for eighteen months with the option of a further year.

Turning Bialkowski’s loan move into a permanent transfer was a priority for Lions boss Gary Rowett.

"It's brilliant. Part of the process of any window is trying to make longterm decisions as well as short term trying to impact the team,” Rowett said.

“Having him here long term and taking away that uncertainty towards the end of the season is brilliant for both parties.”

Williams, 33, signed for Millwall six years ago this month from MK Dons.

He has made 257 appearances for the Lions and scored 22 goals.

The Ireland international, who has signed until the summer of 2021, had been an ever-present under Rowett until his recent three-game ban.

Rowett said: "When we came in a lot of people had spoken about his age and whether he could go again. What I would say is he's been fantastic, he's been as consistent as any player.

"The way we're playing he gives us that little bit of control in midfield that maybe we've lacked when he's not been in there. He's so composed on the ball, so calm.

"He's still really mobile, when you watch him in training he still gets around the pitch really quickly. It's interesting, I wouldn't play him further forward, but when he does go forward in training he's got really good composure around the goal.

"He's just a really good all-round footballer and is another one who's an important character for us in the team and will be important for us over the next few seasons. He's been really good."

Meanwhile, Hutchinson will have spent seven years at the club if he sees out his new deal.

Rowett was delighted to secure the defender long term.

“He’s got a great attitude, he’s very popular with the lads as well,” Rowett said. “Any player of that ilk that’s performed well for us we’d want to be part of the long-term plan that we’re looking at.

“It’s not just about trying to be good this season, it’s about trying to be better next season and even better the season after that.

“Tying players like Hutch down is a big part of that.”

Lions’ late deadline dash

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL are trying to sign a goalkeeper before the transfer deadline on Friday – and are also hoping to boost their attacking options.

Frank Fielding is set to be out for a significant spell after picking up an injury in training last week.

That left Millwall with just 20-year-old Ryan Sandford – who has yet to make a senior appearance – as back-up to Bart Bialkowski against Leeds at Elland Road on Tuesday night.

If Millwall can’t get a stopper in before 11pm on Friday night, they still have the option of an emergency loan move outside the window as they would meet the EFL rules.

Lions boss Gary Rowett hasn’t ruled out a return from Nottingham Forest for Luke Steele, whom Millwall signed last August after Fielding tore his quad.

The Lions also need a left-sided player.

Millwall were also hoping to complete a move for Derby County’s Mason Bennett as the News was going to press.

The attacking player has been out with an ankle injury since November, but Rams boss Phillip Cocu confirmed he has returned to training. Cocu will let him leave on loan.

The Lions lost 3-2 to Leeds after leading 2-0 at half-time. Rowett referenced the Whites’ loan signing of striker Jean-Kévin Augustin from RB Leipzig and his rumoured price were Marcelo Bielsa’s side to get promoted to stress Millwall won’t be breaking the bank anytime soon.

“We’re trying. We’ll try and do what we can,” Rowett added.

“We certainly won’t be bringing in a player with a £30million buy-out option if we get into the Premier League, I don’t think we’re quite at that level.

“But we will be trying to do something in our own way.”

The Lions handed Bart Bialkowski, 32, an eighteenmonth contract this week after his permanent switch from Ipswich, with the option of another year.

Under previous boss Neil Harris the club only gave 12-month deals to over-30s, though those contracts could include clauses to activate another year based on certain performance milestones being met.

Shaun Williams (below), who will be 34 next October, now has another eighteen months on his contract after talks this month.

Millwall also moved to secure Shaun Hutchinson on a long-term deal. The centre-back will be in his 33rd year when his current terms run out, though Hutchinson only turned 29 in November so the previous policy wouldn’t have applied to him.

Millwall manager Gary Rowett said they would treat contracts on a “case-by-case” basis.

“In some cases, if you’re a centrehalf, for example, sometimes 30 is your peak year,” Rowett said.

“If it’s a player we feel we need to tie down for longer I don’t think we’ll limit that.

“I think it will be case by case, I think that’s a sensible approach for any club.”

Millwall have held talks with the representatives of several other members of the squad, as Rowett and his management staff set down their longterm plans.
