josh@southwarknews.co.uk Doctors who have never met you or even seen your full medical records can help decide whether you are a homelessness priority in Southwark.

According to Freedom of Information reports seen by the News, medical assessment company NowMedical has been used in nearly ten thousand cases by Southwark Council to assess whether someone is medically vulnerable enough to be considered “priority need” for

housing support.

In all instances, the decisions to deny housing to applicants are made by the council. At no point is NowMedical making these decisions; they are paid to provide medical assessments.

NowMedical do not regularly meet

those they are assessing, have access to their full medical history, or talk to applicants’ GPs, it has been claimed.

On Monday, Starmer’s place on the Labour leadership ballot paper was confirmed after the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW) came out in his favour, the shadow Brexit secretary is now leagues ahead.

The Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP had been supporting Jess Phillips’ campaign however she pulled out of the race on Tuesday.

Despite a strong start, a poor hustings performance saw Phillips, the MP for Yardley, withdraw.

“Jess appeals far beyond our base in a way that is more attractive to people who ‘aren’t doing’ politics,” Coyle had argued.

“Look at the number of people following Jess on Facebook and who are interested to see what she has to say.

“Her reach is far bigger than Keir’s and she’s not had a front bench position, she’s not been in the shadow cabinet.

“He’s been in it for four years and has less of a following even though he’s been our go-to

person on the biggest single issue facing the country.

“If we are serious about reaching beyond the politically interested, who are always going to be voting and looking anyway, we’ve got to use our best communicators, our best voices, and those with the biggest reach.”

Starmer currently has a bigger Facebook following (27k versus 18k) though Phillips has overtaken him on twitter (309k versus 375k). Taking into account Phillips’ position as a backbencher, it’s a strong showing.

Coyle also believed her strategy would have chimed with those still disillusioned with New Labour and left incredulous by the 2019 recent manifesto and its spending promises.

He told the News before she pulled out: “Jess is speaking to the fundamentals. She is talking about a modern socialism that is cradle to grave, what we saw in the post-war settlement.

“She is talking about childcare and social care and these are start of life and end of life issues in a way that the party has failed to communicate effectively on for decades.”

But Coyle is worried that without a break from the last leadership team, Labour will be unable to win over the electorate.

“I want the party to realise the hole it’s in.

“If it’s not perceived as a big enough change from that big rejection they will not come back to us.

“People say it’s the worst defeat since 1935.

In 1935 the Labour Party had never had a majority government. Our future is not guaranteed. If we tell people that Corbyn deserves 10 out of 10 when the voters just gave him none out of ten, then I’m afraid they’re not going to take us very seriously.

The only candidate of the five who is really making that point [was] Jess. A comfort blanket in Keir is not what we need.”

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The rumoured frontrunner to stand as Labour’s candidate for Lambeth and Southwark’s seat at City Hall is a male councillor from Wandsworth, leading to claims of a “stitchup” selection from overlooked local female candidates.

Last week the News reported that Cllr Evelyn Akoto, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for public safety, who grew up on Aylesbury Estate, had announced she was standing as Labour’s candidate for Lambeth and Southwark’s place in the London Assembly.

But just days later, Labour’s National Executive Committee confirmed its shortlist of possible contenders for the poll and neither Akoto nor several other black women councillors who put

themselves forward had made the cut.

The selection, believed to have been overseen by a committee including Momentum founder Jon Lansman, has now been described as a “stitch up” by figures including Lord Kennedy, in the House of Lords.

The News understands the chosen shortlist of candidates list includes three councillors - Lewisham’s Salina Sheik, Bromley’s Marina Ahmed and Wandsworth’s Maurice McLeod. It is believed McLeod is the frontrunner.

Also selected were grassroots activist Shahina Jaffer – who describes herself as a “black woman socialist”, and GMB’s Taranjit Chana, an LGBT and women’s rights campaigner. Among those rejected were Dora Dixon-Fyle MBE, an exMayor of Southwark, and chair of Camberwell Community Council,

and Lambeth Council’s deputy leader Jennifer Brathwaite, who was even shortlisted as a parliamentary candidate for Streatham in 2019.

More than 90 councillors across both boroughs have signed an open letter calling on the party’s leaders to reconsider and allow members to have a “full and representative choice”.

“We cannot understand how the panel failed to put forward extremely hard working, talented and respected councillors who live and work in our communities, know the issues and fight for our residents every single day,” the letter explains.

Peter John, Southwark’s council leader, has described the committee’s actions as “staggering”.

The usually measured politician was unequivocal: “If it looks like a fix, sounds like a fix, and smells like a fix – it is a fix” before saying that Labour’s members “deserve

better from this discredited party leadership”.

Sources say MP Harriet Harman is livid and has been working hard behind the scenes to challenge the decision.

“It’s a travesty that three great local councillors were excluded from the list precisely because the members would choose one of them,” she tweeted.

The News understands the decision was made by a committee including Jim Kelly, Hazel Flynn, Jon

Landsman, and Michelle Gordon.

Bermondsey MP Neil Coyle said they should be wary of parachuting candidates in. “If they do this then good people won’t put themselves forward in future.”

Long before the shortlist was announced the selection had proved controversial, with many figures saying the seat, held by Florence Eshalomi, who was elected as Vauxhall’s new MP in December, should have been advertised as having a women-only shortlist.

But Avanton admits it has not met with Southwark Council to discuss whether its bold idea could ever be allowed – and an animal rights charity has slammed the proposal as alligator “exploitation.”

The idea is for a Victorian gasholder to be transformed, to house alligators in water features going 20m deep.

The frame of the gasholder would be shielded in special glass conservatory to create a ‘Florida-like’ environment for the animals.

The alligator park would then be a tourist attraction at the centre of the £230m mixed-use development including housing and offices.

It’s one of three ideas for the gasholder, said Marc Pennick, the developer’s cofounding director.

“The Alligator Park and Farm would be the first in London, and is one of a series of exciting leisure concepts Avanton is reviewing for the vast Grade II listed gasholder on the Gasworks site on Old Kent Road,” he said.

“We want to turn the gasholder into something really special for London, so alongside the Alligator Park we are also looking at the option of turning it into a large lido and leisure deck complex, and are also thinking about an artistic garden with water features.

“The Alligator Park and Farm concept came to us after we were approached by an out-of-town specialist looking for a location for an Alligator Park in the capital.”

But animal welfare charity, World Animal Protection, said it was “extremely concerned” by the idea.

Animal welfare charity and council are against alligator park proposal for Old Kent Road and not as part of an attraction at a property development,” said Katheryn Wise, the charity’s campaign manager.

“Not only is the busy and noisy environment of a property on the Old Kent Road no place for a wild animal, the transportation and handling of these alligators is likely to cause them unnecessary stress, fear and anxiety.

“Wild animal exploitation to boost the profits of a property developer is the wrong message to be sending and

we are urging the company to rethink their decision.”

However, Avanton said it would only go ahead with the idea after consulting animal welfare experts.

Councillors have also reacted with bemusement at the left-field plan.

“I am however glad to say that it won’t be happening,” said Cllr Richard Livingstone, an Old Kent Road ward councillor who also holds the environment portfolio for Southwark. I like alligators – but in the swamps of Louisiana and Florida, not on the Old Kent Road!”

The purpose-built school, designed

by Carl Turner Architects, opened its doors to students in September 2018 with support from Southwark Council.

Last year, the new building was also shortlisted as one of the buildings of the year in the 2019 New London Awards.

The school, previously based in north London, relocated to Peckham so it could create a new campus for its students and wider rehearsal space and studios for hire.

Alongside offering full-time courses in the arts, Mountview also holds an impressive array of outreach events and part-time and short courses for adult learners. The Stage’s Building of the Year award will be announced on 31 January 2020 at a ceremony at the Royal Opera House.

Motorcyclist injured on Old Kent Road A motorcyclist was rushed to hospital after a collision in Old Kent Road on Monday afternoon.

Emergency services were at the scene near Asda from around 1.30pm.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “Crews treated a person at the scene for back injuries and took them to hospital.”

The Met confirmed a motorbike rider had collided with a car.

The playhouse’s Young Company is set to benefit from a £9,720 grant for its schools work and youth theatre for people aged sixteen to 25, including a free professional workshop programme for students interested in the performing arts.

It is hoped the grants will continue the theatre’s work helping underrepresented groups and those from disadvantaged backgrounds gain theatre experience.

Florence Eshalomi, newly elected as Labour’s Vauxhall MP, told MPs she had rushed to the fifteen-year-old’s aid in De Laune Street after the stabbing on Tuesday, January 7, at around 5pm, the same day the House of Commons resumed business.

Before entering the House of Commons after December’s snap election, Eshalomi had held the Lambeth and Southwark seat at City Hall on the Greater London Assembly.

She used her maiden speech, on January 16, to call for more investment in mental health services, arguing childhood trauma is the root cause of youth violence.

“I got involved in politics to give a voice to people who feel that politics is not for them or that politics does not matter,” she told MPs. “I have spent a large part of my career working with young people, including the young people who society is quick to demonise and stereotype.

“Last Tuesday, I was one of the first people on the scene following a stabbing incident that took place just over the border of my constituency.

Six day kids’ literary festival announced

By Katherine Johnston One of Labour’s new crop of MPs revealed in her maiden parliamentary speech that on her first day in the job she had tried to stem the blood from a stabbed teenager outside Kennington tube station while they waited for an ambulance.

“I later found out that that young boy was fifteen years old. I was scared. I was sad, because some members of the public walked past.”

She went on to say that research shows the “vast majority” of young people involved in knife crime have suffered trauma in their childhoods.

“Mental health services for our young people have not been adequately funded, and I hope that the government will make a commitment to reverse the cuts and support our young people at risk.”

As the News has reported, a fifteenyear-old was arrested by police the same day as the attack, in Maidstone in Kent, on suspicion of GBH with intent.

He was charged on Wednesday, January 8, and remanded in custody. He appeared at Bromley Youth Court the next day.

His next court date has not yet been confirmed.

Doctors say the victim’s injuries are not life-threatening. He had been in a critical but stable condition in the days after the attack.

Running from Tuesday, February 4 to Sunday, February 9, the event will see poetry, performance, storytelling and an open mic night.

Former children’s laureate and award-winning author and illustrator Chris Riddell and his daughter Katy Riddell, will be headlining on Saturday afternoon, running a life drawing and talking stories session.

Other highlights include Witch Wars and Bad Mermaids author Sibéal Pounder, who will be helping readers create characters and new worlds of their own; a musical puppetry adaption of Michael Morpurgo’s Mimi and the Mountain Dragon; and a teen reading panel with award-winning writer Nicola Morgan.

The series of events is a collaboration between the Herne Hill Forum, Children’s Writers and Illustrators for Stories and Literacy, and bookshop Tales on Moon Lane, and partly funded by Thames Water’s compensation after the 2013 Herne Hill flood.

Tamara Mcfarlane, the author and owner of Tales on Moon Lane, said she hoped this year’s event is the first of many. “We were one of the businesses worst hit by the flood,” she explained.

“This children’s literary festival has been many years in the making and will put the area firmly on the map as a thriving destination for children’s literacy, publishing and storytelling. “ All events must be booked in advance on a “pay what you can” basis.

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Rotherhithe resident was allegedly told she could not fly her St George’s flag by Southwark Council – and to remove her flagpole, too.

The flag had flown in Linda Donovan’s back-garden for 22 years after being installed by her late husband Peter.

But Mrs Donovan says she was told to remove it by a council officer after a neighbour’s complaint in October, because it could only be flown for special sporting occasions.

And according to a letter sent to the 66-year-old by council officials, the flagpole too must come down because it is 22-feet high, which is above a fifteen foot limit.

“I feel awful because I feel like I’ve let my husband down,” said Linda. “I’ll take the flagpole down to fifteen foot but then it’s going straight back up with the St George’s flag on it.

“The flag had been up there 22 years and Peter got planning permission from the council [at the time] but we can’t find a copy and the council don’t keep records that long.”

Linda’s daughter, Kelly, added: “They said because it was a St George’s flag we can have it up for sporting occasions but we can’t have it up all the time.

“In the end we took it down. It caused a lot of stress to my mum because it was kind of a memory of my dad.”

According to the Donovan family, council officials first came around to tell them to take down the flag after a neighbour complained that they did not like it.

After being contacted by the News, the council said it would “review” the decision to take the flagpole down.

“We want to make sure that Ms Donovan and her neighbour are happy with whatever solution is reached,” said Cllr Kieron Williams, who holds the housing portfolio for Southwark.

“We can’t find any record of an original planning consent for the flag pole, but we’re reviewing the

As this paper has reported, news the Brandon Estate’s GP surgery on Maddock Way will not remain open after the retirement of its sole doctor in May of this year has left patients outraged.

A campaign to save it, led by its receptionist, who set up a petition signed by more than a thousand, and local MPs and councillors, culminated in a packed public meeting before Christmas.

A specific point of contention is that no other surgeries had been offered the opportunity to take over, and no active procurement was taking place, as it was believed to be too small a surgery to be financially viable.

But the News understands another GP practice has now expressed interest in taking over and will be pitching its business case at a meeting next Tuesday, January 28. Sources say this is likely to get the green-light. “As is normal practice, the CCG’s Primary Care Commissioning Committee (PCCC) decision to ask patients to register at another local practice, following the closure of Maddock Way Surgery, was pending engagement with local people and stakeholders.

“A report on this feedback will be reviewed at the next committee meeting on 28 January including any further proposal presented to the committee for decision,” a CCG spokesperson said in response to a request to comment.

Lie detector test to be used after london bridge attack

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Random checks for banned items including weapons have been introduced at a Rotherhithe secondary school.

Bacon’s College, on Timber Pond Road, introduced the surprise screening for banned items on all of its students on Friday.

“This is to ensure that no student enters the school with any weapon or any item that could harm anyone else,” states a letter sent to parents by the school announcing the new policy.

“While we do not have any problem with weapons at Bacon’s, we believe that by being proactive and carrying out random screenings a clear message is sent to our students and families that Bacon’s College is a safe school for everyone.” Alongside screening for weapons, the school said it would

confiscate any banned items found during the searches such as fizzy drinks.

The screenings will continue at random times under the new policy, the letter states, and parents will not be warned beforehand.

However, they will be sent a text after to let them know that a screening has taken place.

James Wilson, the principal at Bacon’s College, told the News: “Like any good school we work closely with the police to ensure that issues that are prevalent in the wider community have no place in our school.

“The idea to conduct this exercise has not stemmed from any incident or issue pertinent to Bacon’s College but, as anyone in London knows, is something that is unfortunately relevant in the lives of too many young people across the city. We have seen exercises such as this successfully take place in other secondary schools – including in

Southwark – and we believe they are a worthwhile means of ensuring we keep our students fully reminded about the dangers and risks of ever carrying weapons.”

A spokesperson from the Met’s Borough Commander’s office said weapon screenings have happened at two Southwark schools in the last six months, including Bacon’s College.

“Serious youth violence and knife crime have unfortunately been at the forefront of our priorities and weapon screening at schools is one of many tactics we employ to deter this,” said the spokesperson.

“They are done on an ad-hoc basis alongside school staff and are only carried out with school permission.”

There is no set criteria for the sweeps, which are offered to all schools in the borough. This is “to show parents and pupils we are working in partnership to tackle knife crime and serious youth violence.”

The tests would be used to quiz terrorists about whether they have reformed or are planning another attack.

It comes as part of a package of measures in a new bill to “strengthen the UK’s response” to terrorism after Usman Khan’s knife attack at Fishmonger’s Hall.

Home Secretary Priti Patel said the attack had forced “hard truths” on the authorities about how terrorist offenders were dealt with.

She said that the government was “giving police and probation officers the resources they need to investigate and track offenders, introducing tougher sentences, and launching major reviews into how offenders are managed after they are released.

“We will also review the support available for victims and their families to make sure they receive the help they need.”

However, David Merritt, the father of

one of the victims of November’s attack, said the announcement was a “cynical, headline-grabbing gimmick to distract our attention.”

Mr Merritt has previously said his son, Jack, who had advocated for criminal justice reform, would not want “more draconian” sentences in the wake of the tragedy.

Measures pledged in the bill, which will be introduced by mid-March, include: • Automatic early release from prison to be scrapped, and those convicted of serious terror offences to serve a minimum of fourteen years behind bars • Doubling the number of specialist counter-terrorism probation officers • Increase in funding of £90m from 2020-21 for counter-terror policing • Increase in psychologists and specially-trained imams to challenge beliefs of radicalised offenders • A review into how terror offenders are managed, led by Johnathan Hill QC. He said: “This is not a new concept. I think it is a sensible measure in order to help maximise the understanding of the risks that some of these prisoners pose to society.”

Match officials reported the incident of alleged homophobic abuse during the first-half of the game against Reading.

The club said it carried out standard protocol in making a “tannoy announcement to the crowd as quickly as possible” during the game at The Den. CONCERNS OVER claims that councils are making housing assessments without talking to applicants

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Doctors who have never met you or even seen your full medical records can help decide whether you are a homelessness priority in Southwark.

According to Freedom of Information reports seen by the News, medical assessment company NowMedical has been used in nearly ten thousand cases

by Southwark Council to assess whether someone is medically vulnerable enough to be considered “priority need” for housing support.

In all instances, the decisions to deny housing to applicants are made by the council. At no point is NowMedical making these decisions; they are paid to provide medical assessments.

NowMedical do not regularly meet those they are assessing, have access to their full medical history, or talk to applicants’ GPs, it has been claimed.

According to figures obtained by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism and shared with the News, the company has been used for assessments in more than 9,500 cases, costing taxpayers in excess of £250,000 since 2015.

The private company’s advice is then used by Southwark Council to help decide whether disabled or ill applicants are a priority case.

These medical assessments – advertised on the company’s site as being turned around in as little as one working day – have been criticised in cases brought before the courts.

In one judgement, a judge overturned a decision by Islington Council, informed

by NowMedical, that an Iranian refugee who had been tortured, suffered from PTSD and could not speak English was not vulnerable.

A second case in 2017 involved a suicidal woman who won an appeal for housing support from Lambeth Council.

The authority had relied on NowMedical evidence which found the applicant to be no more vulnerable than the average person, despite her GP stating she could not cope with being homeless.

The presiding judge, His Honor Judge Parfitt, condemned the use of NowMedical evidence in that case as “fundamentally flawed,” as no-one from the organisation had considered the

Those at risk of homelessness or experiencing it can approach their local council for help.

After an initial period of support where the council will try to end or prevent their homelessness, they are then assessed to see if they are eligible for long-term support.

The council considers if the person is intentionally homeless, their links to the local area and crucially, if they are so vulnerable that they need help.

People may be considered vulnerable for a range of reasons: if they have a physical disability, mental health issues, are elderly, or are fleeing domestic abuse.

Being considered vulnerable is not enough. The test is whether a person is significantly more vulnerable than an ordinary person would be if they became homeless.

This is where many claims fall down.

If officers decide the person does not meet that bar, then they are assessed as “non-priority need”.

Applicants can appeal the decision internally and even take the case to judicial review, if they can find the money.

However, without the decision being overturned, the council is under no obligation to find them housing. applicant’s full medical records or spoken to her.

Housing campaigners have accused Southwark Council of using the company’s assessments to keep vulnerable people homeless.

Southwark Council’s housing chief, Cllr Kieron Williams, said relying on NowMedical wasn’t “ideal” but that an alternative was being sought.

“NowMedical provides a service to the council which accesses confidential medical papers, deciphers the assessments made by doctors and then makes a recommendation to us, in order for us so to make a decision on homelessness and housing register applications based on medical need,” he said in a statement.

“We recognise that this service isn’t ideal, we would rather be working directly with the NHS and we’re working towards that in order to make medical assessments of clients for their housing applications.”

The council did not answer this paper’s questions on how many NowMedical assessments it had agreed or disagreed with; the time frame for moving away from using NowMedical; or whether it had ever had its own in-house assessors.

“NowMedical are not the decision makers in respect of local authority housing matters.

“In general, we are contracted to provide desktop reports based on an individual’s relevant medical records as provided by the instructing local authority.

“We have on various occasions been commended for our services by Judges at all levels including the Supreme Court where it was said that “…[NowMedical’s] advice seems to me well founded in […] medical expertise and [they were] thus fully entitled to advise…”.

“Our reports are provided by fully qualified, practising doctors all of whom hold higher medical qualifications including Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners.

“We have a broad depth of medical experience and expertise and remain dedicated to providing high quality services to local authorities.”

HASL campaigners have called for Southwark to end its rolling contract with NowMedical.

Les Alden MBE, who sat on Southwark Council from 1971-1994, died on January 8.

Alden had later moved away from London to Sussex after retiring, where he stayed active in local politics and was elected to Adur and Worthing Council.

Alden had a distinguished career in the civil service and charities, and as a councillor helped arrange Christmas parties for thousands of OAPs over the years.

Life peer Lord Kennedy of Southwark said he was saddened by Alden’s passing.

“I first met him 36 years ago at a Southwark Labour Party meeting. A wonderful man with true Labour and community values,” he said.

Southwark councillor Charlie Smith described Alden as his “old friend” and sent condolences to his surviving wife, Pat, and their family.

Alden’s local branch, the Worthing West Constituency Labour Party, described him as “one of the leading lights of the party locally” and said “his knowledge, compassion and dedication to socialist principles will be missed.”

Adur District Council’s leader, Lee Cowen, said Alden was “my mentor and someone who believed in me”.

Tributes came in from across the political spectrum, with the Conservative East Worthing and Shoreham MP describing Alden’s “distinguished record of serving the community in London and more recently on Adur Council.

“Our condolences and prayers go out to Les’ family and the Adur Labour group.”

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Two friends have been jailed for life for stabbing teenager Amara Toure to death in Walworth last June.

Paulinho Paulo, aged 20, from Walton Road in Manor Park, and Dullah Abdullah, aged 21, from Eton Road in Ilford, were both handed life sentences last week.

Paulo must serve a minimum of 23 years and Abdullah 21 years.

A third defendant, 20-year-old Sultan Chaudhry, from High Street South in East Ham, had been charged with murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter part-way through the trial.

He will serve ten years behind bars.

Eighteen-year-old Amara was stabbed a shocking seventeen times in just four minutes in Walworth’s Sutherland Walk in the early hours of June 30.

It was part of an ongoing dispute between the parties, the Old Bailey trial heard.

Amara self-presented at hospital afterwards with his stab wounds, but could not be saved. He died from his stab wounds and blood loss.

The trial heard how Paulo, Adbullah, Chaudhry and others had been at a fastfood restaurant on the Walworth Road earlier that night at the same time as Amara and his friends.

He flagged down a passing car to take him to hospital but sadly died of his injuries.

“Paulo, Adbullah and Chaudhry have violent and criminal backgrounds and they will now pay the price for their actions,” said the Met’s DCI John Massey.

“A family is now left without a son and

they will have to live the rest of their lives with this loss.

“I would like to pay particular tribute to the courage and dignity Amara’s mother has shown throughout this incredibly traumatic time and hope that today’s verdict provides a sense of justice and some degree of closure.

“I and the investigating team are enormously grateful for the cooperation and assistance of the local community as well as the officers who responded to the incident and their management of the immediate aftermath.”

Camberwell nail bar refused licence as police object over fears workers are being ‘exploited’

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Camberwell nail bar lost its licence last week amid police fears that “workers have and will be exploited” at the venue.

A UK Border Force raid in April found four Vietnamese nationals working at Ayoyemi Nails on Camberwell Road, two of whom had entered the country illegally.

One of them was underage. The other two had no right to work under the terms of their asylum application.

“The female behind the counter attempted to escape and was arrested in the street,” said PC Graham White in a submission to the council.

A separate raid in November 21 alongside Trading Standards revealed three Vietnamese nationals working at the venue, only one of whom was allowed to work, said police.

Trading Standards also seized a large number of nail gels from the shop, the meeting heard, which interim testing allegedly revealed to have contained an illegal carcinogenic ingredient.

The female applicant told the hearing that she was not aware of the immigration status of those arrested in April, as it had been dealt with by a

business partner.

She disputed that those inside the shop were staff on other occasions raised by councillors, alleging them to be relatives of an employee who did hold a licence for nail treatments.

She also told the meeting that she was also not aware that the products were potentially dangerous as she had brought them from a ‘reputable’ Peckham wholesaler.

“The facts have been well-covered, [but] the applicant is a fit and proper person to hold a licence,” her solicitor told councillors.

“Yes, things happened in April, but since then lessons have been learned and she would simply ask for you to give that trust in her.”

Despite that, her bid was rejected.

A hearing to discuss whether Lucky Nails, also on Camberwell Road, should have a licence to operate was adjourned after councillors discovered the applicant could not understand English.

Five people from Vietnam were arrested for immigration offences at the premises in July last year.

A second raid in October saw two further arrests, say police, while “a number of other workers had conditions forbidding them from working.”

Cllr Renata Hamvas, chair of the licensing sub-committee, rescheduled the meeting until February 12, for the applicant to find a translator.

A licence bid for Sabrina Beauty Salon on Peckham’s Rye Lane was also due to be heard, but has now been rescheduled.

Eight Chinese staff working at that salon were arrested for immigration

offences in October after coming to the UK illegally, said police.

The News has not been able to contact the venue.

Police have raised ‘worker exploitation’ fears about all three venues in their objections to the council.

Those carrying out manicures, pedicures or nail extensions in Southwark are required to have a

‘special treatments’ licence.

The nail bar industry is coming under increasing scrutiny over fears it is a magnet for people trafficking.

Health and safety concerns have also been raised about workers’ exposure to noxious chemicals, skeletal disorders from being hunched over for long hours, and the potential for unlicensed venues to transmit infectious diseases.

People need dignity in their old age families need support, social care must be an universal public service

I

am contacted by a growing number of people in Camberwell and Peckham who can’t get the quality social care their older relatives need.

People come to me distraught, concerned that the care their vulnerable parent with dementia is getting is suffering due to cuts.

One man told me that the poor and inconsistent standards of care have caused his 89-year-old mother such frustration and distress it has accelerated the decline in her health.

A decade of Tory cuts to local council budgets and a growing number of elderly people needing care has pushed care services to the brink and is causing thousands of people untold misery.

Councils across the country are having to make impossibly difficult decisions about who receives care, there is currently a 122,000 national staffing shortfall and millions of people are left to cope at home, alone, without the support they need.

Despite the brilliant efforts of staff,

many vulnerable people are waiting longer for treatment and standards of care are not being delivered. And families are pushed to breaking point.

The care you receive in your older years should not depend on your income. Quality social care must be a universally-available public service.

Families across the country deserve peace of mind that their relatives will be safe and looked after. The measure of a society is how it treats its most vulnerable.

And if people can’t get the help they need at home or in the community they are more likely to go to A& E or their GP surgery, causing extra strain on already desperately stretched hospital and GP services.

It has now been almost three years since the Government promised a consultation on social care and seven months since the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, stood on the steps of Downing Street and claimed he had a clear plan to fix the crisis in social care. But there is, as yet no plan?

Questions raised over “delayed” safety work on Peckham High Street after fatal crash

It has now been almost three years since the Government promised a consultation on social care and seven months since the Prime Minister claimed he had a clear plan to fix the crisis. But there is, as yet no plan? week to increase funding by £1 billion per year does not go anywhere near far enough. 1.5 million people are currently going without the support they need. The local Government Association estimates that by 2024 the funding gap will be £3.5bn.

Locally Southwark Council are working hard to help older residents and people with dementia stay safely in their own home, despite deep Tory cuts.

The council has just announced it is building 50 extra care homes and a new day centre at Tayo Situ House in Peckham, named after the late Mayor of Southwark and dedicated Peckham Councillor, Tayo Situ. Extra Care homes are self-contained flats that allow people to live independently in their own homes, but with round the clock care support on site so there is help if they need it and so they feel less isolated or alone.

Tackling the crisis in social care is a priority for Labour. I’ve cosigned Helen Hayes MP’s Early Day Motion to demand the government urgently brings forward proposals to parliament so we can ensure everyone gets the support they need and can live with dignity in their old age.

We are also pressing ministers to invest in the social care workforce. Carers play a vital role in our society, yet they are often unappreciated and underpaid.

We need to pay care workers a real living wage and develop a sustainable, cross-party solution, otherwise the 122,000 staff shortfall and the crisis in social care will grow and more older people and their families will suffer.

ecember weather was cloudy and grey with average temperatures and occasional bright, cold sunny days. January has been much the same – but cooler conditions may be on the way as we head towards February.

Gardening in the city is often restricted to window boxes or containers on balconies or patios; gardens can be a rarity and maybe shared, small or shaded by buildings and trees. This presents a challenging growing environment - but there are a range of plants that will tolerate limited light as long as there is some sun during the day.

To ensure plants thrive - the soil needs to be kept in good condition - free draining and not compacted or waterlogged. This can be achieved by aerating and mulching in spring and autumn, and top dressing plants in spring to maintain fertility and soil structure.

there are lots of different varieties to choose from – including Golden Bamboo, Bisset’s Bamboo or Umbrella Bamboo. This is quite an invasive plant; confine the roots in a pot when planting to slow underground spread. It can break out and quickly take over a small space.

• The flowering quince (Chaenomeles) is an attractive, low growing shrub that produces white, peach or red flowers in January and ornamental fruits in autumn.

• Impatiens or the Busy Lizzies are cheerful, bright annuals which last through the summer months and provide a splash of colour, they are also drought tolerant.

• Vinca is an evergreen ground cover plant and tolerates dense shade; it produces pretty flowers during the summer – purple, mauve, blue or white depending on the variety.

Some bulbs grow naturally in a shady environment such as Snowdrops and the Autumn crocus.

Other flowering shrubs such as Choisya and summer flowering Jasmine will flourish in light shade.

The evergreen Choisya is a troublefree plant and flowers several times a year. It can be clipped to keep compact. Jasmine is a vigorous climber producing clusters of white fragrant flowers. Other useful evergreens are Holly and Box.

There is an exciting new award this year, the Rotary Young Citizen Sporting Hero Award 2020 to recognise the achievements and contribution of an able-bodied or disability sports participant or a group or an individual or group who is enabling others to participate in sport.

This year’s awards also include the Rotary Young Citizen Peacemaker Award, recognising young people, an individual or group, who’ve made a significant contribution by building peace and understanding, whether in their school, local community, or with a peace project internationally.

Dual crossword Snap poll - will the Old Kent Road become home to London’s first alligator park?

A

t risk of disappointing, the short answer is probably not any time soon. The idea is the brainchild of the developer Avanton, who has proposed it as one of three ideas for their Gasholder site.

The historic gasholder would be converted into alligator tanks in the centre of a development with housing and offices.

But Avanton admits it has not yet met with Southwark Council to discuss its ideas, much less gotten around to submitting a planning application.

It adds that it would not go ahead with the idea without consulting animal experts about the suitability of the Old Kent Road housing alligators.

On two fronts, this throws up hurdles for Avanton’s alligator attraction. An animal welfare charity has slammed the idea, saying the development is not appropriate for the creatures.

Councillors too have reacted with bemusement, labelling it a “joke”. Alligators should stick to the swamps of Louisiana, thinks one Old Kent Road representative.

It seems, then, a safer bet that the Gasholder will actually end up being a “an artistic garden with waterfeatures” or “a large lido”, the two other proposals for the structure.

But never say never – and if it does go ahead, we know some of our readers will snap at the opportunity to go and visit.

Shame to fixate on Labour candidates rejected, and not praise some of those who did make the cut

abour members calling for the party’s leadership to rethink its selection process for the GLA election next May need to be careful they don’t fall into a trap of their own making.

Senior figures across Lambeth and Southwark councils, both in the seat’s catchment area, and MPs have intervened, describing the shortlist, cherry-picked by senior figures and not via a larger vote among members, as a “stitch up”. An open letter signed by nearly 100 councillors highlights that some leading figures, working in top elected jobs, have been side-lined, including black and ethnic minority women councillors.

Whether the seat should have automatically had an all-women shortlist is another matter, but it would be a shame to fixate on who was rejected, and not praise some of those who did make the cut.

The list is diverse. And though none are Southwark or Lambeth councillors, it’s not true to say none have any connection to the borough. There is also the argument that although some existing councillors would be excellent additions, it’s always good to give newcomers a chance to stand in any election for the first time and bring in candidates from Labour’s broad base of affiliates.

Peter John et al’s calls for a more open process, and a decision made with members rather than for them and behind closed doors, is the right one. But to win that argument they need to make sure that the accusation of factionalism can’t be thrown right back at them.

It’s all in the name A burst water main on Blackfriars Road sparked commuter chaos on Tuesday morning, and households across the borough to lose running water.

Engineers swooped into the site to try to restore water and patch up the ‘eight foot sinkhole’ caused by the gushing leak.

But it appears at least one Thames Water engineer was doing the job he was born to do.

Because his name is Lee King.

Southwark tube station was closed because of the flood, with an inevitable impact on the rest of the Jubilee Line.

Yet this appears to have passed somebody at TfL by.

Although TfL advised commuters on social media to alight at nearby Waterloo instead, its website advised a good service on the line during the flooding drama.

It meant at least some passengers went to Southwark as normal, only to discover the surrounding area under several feet of water.

One wonders why the site wasn’t updated as TfL’s headquarters is within spitting – and swimming distance of Southwark station.

The Bridge was allegedly closed in the early hours of Saturday morning so that film crews could use the famous Southwark location as the backdrop for the finale.

But according to blogs for die-hard fans of the show, no actors were present, including main stars Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh. It wouldn’t be the first time Killing Eve has filmed in Southwark, as portions of the last season were shot outside Jenny’s Café in Peckham Rye. Separately, upcoming superhero film Venom 2 has scenes partly filmed on the campus of London South Bank University.

Crews were seen on the campus on Friday night.

rapist jailed for 14 years after double attack

Wilfred Marodza confessed to multiple sickening crimes against the two women in July last year, and was jailed last Thursday for 14 years.

The 28-year-old predator first struck just after 2.30am on Saturday, July 20, approaching a 21-year-old woman from behind on Great Dover Street as she was walking home on her own.

He marched her to a wooded area on nearby Dickens Fields, before raping her multiple times.

Fearing for her life, the victim escaped and ran off to a nearby street.

When a passing motorist stopped and challenged him, Marodza, of Kingston Road, Eastbourne, claimed he and the victim were having a domestic argument.

The desperate victim got into the car to escape Marodza, and the driver took her to the police station.

But she was so disorientated and traumatised, she ran into a nearby fast-food restaurant, and its staff called police.

Just one hour later, Marodza attacked another woman on Borough High Street.

The 25-year-old victim was waiting at a bus stop when he struck up a conversation with her and offered himself as an escort as she walked to a nearby cab office.

But as they walked along together, Marodza grabbed her and pulled her into a side-street. He fled the scene

Court heard how the predator attacked one victim from behind and dragged her to Dickens Fields to rape her after she managed to scream after being pushed to the ground.

Police caught Marodza at his family home in Eastbourne that same day, after linking him to the crimes with mobile phone data and CCTV footage.

When interviewed, he answered “no comment” to police questions.

“I would like to recognise the dignity and courage of both women who were subjected to horrifying ordeals after having the dreadful misfortune of being targeted by Marodza,” said investigating officer Detective Sergeant Jonny Norman.

“He is a dangerous predator who took sinister advantage of being in London to violently attack two women.

“Both were left in fear of their lives and he will now serve a substantial amount of time behind bars, where he can bring no further harm to women.

“I would like to thank the investigative team whose excellent policing work quickly led to Marodza’s arrest.

“While recognising that this sentencing will not compensate for being violently attacked and a lifetime of dealing with the psychological impact of such an ordeal, I hope both women

feel that justice has been done.

“I also urge victims of sexual offences to report what has happened to you.

“You will be listened to and our team of specially trained officers will offer every available support while enquiries are taking place.”

Marodza pleaded guilty to four counts of rape in relation to the first victim and an additional count of kidnap.

He was given eight years behind bars for the four counts of rape, and five years for kidnap, to run at the same time.

The predator also confessed to one

count of kidnap and one count of committing an offence with intent to commit a sexual offence against his 25-year-old victim.

For this, he was given five years’ imprisonment for one count of kidnap and six years’ imprisonment for one count of committing an offence with intent to commit a sexual offence.

The court heard how he assaulted the victim during the kidnap to subdue her so that he could attempt a sex offence.

Alongside his total of fourteen years in prison, Marodza will spend life on the sex offenders’ register.

shopping centre closed by the end of July

The centre’s owner, Delancey, which is redeveloping the centre as part of the Elephant and Castle Town Centre regeneration project, confirmed the date last week.

“We are committed to creating a thriving town centre in Elephant and Castle,” a spokesperson for Delancey told the News on Friday.

“We continue to work very closely with independent traders at the existing

shopping centre to support businesses’ plans for relocation and this includes the building of the retail space on Castle Square that has now commenced.

“As part of this process, we have confirmed the last day of trade and closure of the shopping centre will be Thursday 30 July 2020.

“With this much needed certainty, the independent traders are able to finalise details of their relocation and progress can continue for those traders still working through their plans.

“At the same time, we are progressing the plans for the construction of the new Elephant and Castle Town Centre and will keep the community updated.”

Two restaurants set to open at Elephant Park

Ecuadorian restaurant Miko’s is moving from Elephant and Castle shopping centre into a new space at 17 Sayer Street.

While Camberwell’s Bayroot is expanding with a second eatery two doors down at 15A. Although official opening dates have not been shared, it is expected both will start trading in the coming months.

Elephant Park is the £2.3 billion regeneration of the former Heygate Estate and surrounding areas from Southwark Council and developer Lendlease.

Current traders already operating in the new units include Ethiopian vegan restaurant Beza, and

Caribbean food from Tasty Jerk.

Lenin Erazo, who set up Miko’s, said: “Our food has proven hugely popular with visitors to Elephant & Castle; we bring the best tastes of Ecuador and have built-up loyalty through our authenticity.

“We were keen to stay within this local community as it’s where we founded the restaurant, so we are delighted with the new restaurant space in Elephant Park, and the opportunity Lendlease has provided to us.”

Bayroot’s Yasser Elmoussa added: “Elephant Park is quickly becoming a destination for world flavours, and our traditional Lebanese dishes will sit perfectly amongst the other restaurants here.

“We are well-known in Elephant and Castle – we have been just down the road in Camberwell for over five years and cannot wait to bring some Middle Eastern spice to Elephant Park.”

Council rents rise by 2.7% to net the town hall £5 million

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A £32,000 fundraiser is hoping to restore the café at the popular Surrey Docks Farm.

The charitable farm has been without a café for the past year, but has found tenants to take over the space.

However, the café needs a significant upgrade of kitchen facilities and electrics before it can get up and running – which the charity does not have the resources to cover.

The total cost of the works is estimated to be £32,000 to provide a “welcoming

space serving drinks, tasty cakes and delicious meals.”

So far, nearly £5,000 has been raised, but help is urgently needed to off-set any losses to the charity, it says.

“While we have been so lucky to receive grant funding to carry out our Riverfront Development, the ongoing running costs of the Farm keep increasing and without café rent and no room hire during the building upgrade, we’re already facing a loss this financial year,” said the charity.

“It’s imperative we get a café back on site for our visitors benefit and the financial stability of the Farm!

“We will be calling on all our supporters

to help us hit this huge target and really value anything you can give. Every penny really will count to help us hit our target.”

The money will go toward a threephase plan for UK Power Network who will bring a supply to the farm’s boundary and for an electrician to connect the supply to the café.

The tenants of the café will also need to invest in a new and modern kitchen.

Council rents will increase by 2.7 per cent under proposals approved on Tuesday.

The move will see a rent hike – the first in four years – for the council’s directly managed and tenant managed housing stock.

Under legislation passed in 2016, local authorities were required to reduce rents by one per cent per year. This year is the first year rent increases are allowed.

The move has created a £62.5m hole in the council’s coffers, according to a report considered by Cabinet on Tuesday afternoon.

“Under this substantial pressure we have worked hard to protect frontline

housing services for our tenants and residents whilst also ensuring long-term investment in making our housing warm, dry and safe continues at pace,” said Cllrs Kieron Williams and Victoria Mills.

“After the proposed rise, Southwark’s rents will remain 8% – 9% lower than the government’s assumed target and the 8th lowest of the 29 London boroughs with retained housing stock.”

Services charges will also increase from £8.97 per week to £9.25 per week. Garage charges will also see an increase under the move, from £20.70 to £21.30 per week.

The rent hike will secure the council an estimated £4.9m, while homeowner service charges are expected to net £1million.

If approved, the changes will take effect from April 6.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Dulwich Hamlet superfan Mishi Morath made his final visit to Champion Hill last week as his funeral carriage arrived at his beloved club decked out in pink and blue.

It was a fitting send off on Wednesday for the number one rabble rouser, who dedicated his life to the club and was a giant in the non-league football community.

Two white horses drew his Hamletthemed coffin to the football ground as friends and the DHFC community lined the road to pay their respects to the well-loved librarian, poet, and Hamlet fan. Later in the afternoon, his funeral service was held at Honor Oak at 4pm, before a packed public wake was hosted in Hamlet’s clubhouse.

As the News has reported, tributes have poured in for Mishi, who died on December 20 at just 53.

Speaking to the News, Mishi’s elder brother, Ferenc Morath, said on behalf of the bereaved family: “I was really shocked by how loved he was. It has been a wonderful salve for us to know just how loved.”

Mishi grew up in the East Dulwich Estate as the youngest of four, two boys and two girls, born to an Austrian mother and Hungarian father, refugees who fled after the 1956 revolution.

Mishi attended St Anthony’s Primary and St Thomas The Apostle before starting a career in Southwark’s libraries.

Dulwich Hamlet was a family affair, with two of Mishi’s nephews playing for Hamlet teams, and his dad and brother both big fans.

It was Ferenc who took him to his first ever Dulwich Hamlet match: “Straight away he loved it,” he remembers.

“Mishi was quite small and shy as a

Ferenc describes his brother, a supporters’ team player, as a “terrible footballer but he tried his heart out. He didn’t really play a set position, we just told him where to go”.

Mishi organised the team’s trips to play all over Europe from Finland, to Italy, Germany and many others, and over the decades became more involved in the club, its supporters, and its direction.

“He always loved the camaraderie and the way he could meet so many new people through the club,” says Ferenc.

“His big thing, his absolute joy, was that it became such a community team and was so inclusive with all the work around anti-homophobia, and antiracism.

“The fact that someone with mental health struggles could have a few hours there and be welcomed and supported – it meant so much for him. His work with the club was decades’ worth.”

Mishi came out to his brother in the mid-80s, but never told their parents about his sexuality.

“He had been so worried about what his friends would think and people at football, and then none of them gave a monkeys,” Ferenc remembers.

He believes struggles with his sexuality may have contributed to a chronic alcohol addiction that could have cut his life far shorter.

“Mishi stopped drinking at 35, when he started going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. He had to do something or he

was going to die. Last year he had been sober for eighteen years.”

Although Mishi and Dulwich will always be mentioned in the same breath, he was also a huge supporter of Streatham Ice Hockey and Ruby League’s South London Storm.

Outside sport, his career was built on a love of reading and, more recently, he had branched into poetry.

“Mishi was a real artist. He loved photography and took pictures of all his travels and, of course, hundreds of football photos, but the poetry was something he took up quite recently,” says Ferenc.

“He always loved reading and working with children to encourage them to read, and in the libraries meeting older people so he could learn more about local history and what Southwark used to be like.

Mishi was highly partial to pie ‘n’ mash, a dedicated Southwark News reader, and self-described working-class poet.

That identity as working class was hugely important to him. A life-long socialist and Labour party member, he had been an active campaigner in the ‘80s and ‘90s, including supporting the miners.

“He found that poetry was the best way to express himself. He regarded his poetry as being honest, and really told it how it was,” says Ferenc.

“Sometimes poetry can be very pretentious but he really expressed the ordinary. And he could talk about some of the things that had affected him.”

declined. He was hospitalised in February 2019 after a heart attack while at a football match in Chatham.

“It was an army team playing and when he collapsed a soldier gave him the kiss of life. He’d have died without the CPR.” Mishi was laid up in hospital for a month but made a recovery. The same year he was back in the ward after having a toe amputation due to complications from diabetes.

Despite the setbacks, Dulwich Hamlet’s successful return to Champion Hill, first televised game, and the prospect of a new ground, along with all the club’s ever-expanding community work kept him excited about what was to come.

He suffered a second heart attack while at a funeral on December 9.

Doctors operated, believing the procedure had gone well, but he never recovered, and died on December 20.

There has been an outpouring of support and memories shared. In a statement after news of Mishi’s passing, the club described its loss as “immeasurable”.

How would Ferenc describe his little brother? “Everyone says that Mishi was a legend. He absolutely was. People use it far too readily, but he was.

“He was a wonderful, caring individual.

He would give his time to everyone, just the way he would welcome everyone to the club showed that. He loved life and wanted people to share it with.”

what’s on Creative and inventive Twelfth Night in Southwark

Upon entering the theatre I was struck by the sound effects. These had been apparent in a Yard Players’ previous production of King Lear.

The echo of the sea immediately set the scene. Would Twelfth Night be as creative and inventive? writes Susan Hallissey.

Casualties of a shipwreck, brother and sister Sebastian and Viola are separated in the kingdom of Illyria, thinking each other dead. Viola dresses as a boy, calls herself Cesario and sets to work for Duke Orsino - falling in love with him. However, he is in love with Olivia who falls in love with, yes, you’ve guessed it ‘Cesario.’

Devices of farce, mistaken identity, impersonations and, of course, love duly follow, along with plot twists and turns too numerous to mention. Olivia’s Uncle, Sir Toby Belch, is the staggering drunk whose wealthy sidekick Sir Andrew Aguecheek is providing most of Sir Toby’s funds, on the promise he will arrange a marriage between Olivia and Sir Andrew.

Set in present day, Sir Toby Belch played by the languid Pete Picton has a relentless supply of booze about his body, which provides comic touches throughout.

Duncan Dury as the bumbling Sir Andrew reminded me of a Shakespearian ‘George Formby’, which took a while to become accustomed to. Wearing identity badges around their necks, where did they work?

Set by the sea they surely couldn’t be

lifeguards with that amount of alcohol?

Daniel Chrisostomou as Malvolio, Olivia’s besotted steward, goes through a range of emotions. Malvolio starts as an irritating man, yet gains sympathy by the time he is locked up due to a plotline involving Sir Toby, Sir Andrew and the maid Maria. A powerful and moving scene made more so by the effective lighting. Maria, Olivia’s maid (Heloise Spring) is quite wicked as the priest here!

Candice Price as a vivacious and sassy Olivia has great presence and injects bravura on stage, while Jessica Kinsey’s Viola/Cesario was accomplished and, like the rest of the cast, remained vibrant and punchy throughout.

Finally, true identities are revealed, brother and sister are reunited. Sebastian marries Olivia, whilst Cesario reveals her true identity as Viola and is to marry Orsino. Unhappy Malvolio curses them all, yet I wasn’t sure that Orsino looked to thrilled either!

Watch out for energetic and committed performances by the Yard Players – just as creative and inventive as I had hoped for.

Think Al Capone, John Dillinger and endless film and TV series exposing a criminal underworld pitted against an equally corrupt police force. Tony Totora’s Cops invites audiences into the Windy City where five detectives are kicking up a storm of their own, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor.

With Chicago’s streets still hungover from the Race Riot of 1919, this play set in 1957 exposes a bitter taste spilling over into the cop-shop where black detective Rosey, Roosevelt Washington,(Daniel Francis) faces daily racism from colleague Harry Stanton, (Roger Alborough). Harry’s desk spills over with old case files, coffee cups and doughnuts, prompting audiences to investigate clues to a cop unprepared for changes to policing -

Cops fight with sharp dialogue thus questioning who the real criminals are.

Changes arrive in the form of young detective Foxy’s (Jack Flammiger) entrance onto the scene. Foxy embodies the liberal changes shaping music and sex in 50s’ America, expressed through his random bursts of Elvis renditions.

This new pup on the block is full of youth, swagger and arrogance, making him a volatile addition to the team.

A product of a corrupt upbringing, his cynicism develops into full blown contempt for immigrants, leading him to bully and deride his Irish colleague with constant cries of: “Top of the morning to ya”, whilst barking orders.

Thankfully we’re able to see this skewed hierarchy challenged by Rosey threatening Foxy with: “Stick around and I’ll wipe that smile off your face”.

Diverse characters heighten the play’s tension, whether sifting through clues, staking out mobsters or deliberating

life, these detectives are hellbent on squaring up to each other. Providing a boxing ring for their brutal slanging matches is the detectives’ office, a set arranged so authentically, you half expect Sam Spade to walk through the iconic glass-panelled door. Believability increases as detective Hurley, (Ken Keaton) casts a classic film noir shadow of the trilby wearing detective onto a wall, immersing audiences further into detective stakeouts.

Razor sharp dialogue and convincing characters - a good night out.

History

How to get a head in business Southwark has a rich history of industrious entrepeneurs, but one man really knew how to get a head in business.

In 1851, the year of the Great Exhibition, George Carter started his own hat making business, Geo Carter & Sons Ltd, which was to last 100 years.

As a young man coming straight from an apprenticeship it was a hard challenge, yet George started the business in a cottage in Russell Place, Old Kent Road. It was here that he began to make silk hats for the wholesale trade and soon relocated to a private house at 215 Old Kent Road. It was at these premises that a showcase in his front garden really pushed the business off the ground.

Keen to leave his stamp on the trade, George created a logo bearing an upturned hat and four fairies that read; ‘Carter’s noted hats. Light & waterproof’.

Of the thousands of hats made during his time, a single silk top hat is part of a National Trust collection and is on show at Uppark House and Garden in West Sussex. The well preserved hat, along with a metal box and carrying handle, still has the Geo Carter & Sons stamp inside.

George also created coins, similar to a golden sovereign in shape, colour and size. Printed on them were his trademark stamp on one side, with the

branch in 1872 in Chatham, Kent and began to stock gloves, shirts, hosiery and clothing.

After 50 years they had opened as many as 30 branches, with a head office and warehouse at 3 Surrey Square, Walworth, and a hosiery and clothing warehouse based on Marcia Road, Old Kent Road.

The first store can be seen in the film ‘Genevieve’ (1953) as the characters in a car race whizz past on their way into London. It is now home to The British Heart Foundation with flats

other showing a portrait of himself.

He was known to throw these coins from two-horse trams, buses and his chauffeur driven cars into the arms of waiting young children who would run behind them, eager to catch some.

When items were recovered from the rubble that fell after an attack during the Second World War, one of these coins was found on the Old Kent Road

site.

Above the shop at 215 Old Kent Road was a clock with a bowler hat above it that raised at a certain time. Story has it this was to show it was time for the staff to take their dinner break. The store was open on Derby Day from 7:30am until closing at 9:30pm to inform people of the winner.

The company extended to a second

located above it.

Another hat factory, was that of Messrs Christy in Bermondsey Street.

The factory was founded before 1840 and split into two buildings housing workshops on opposite sides of the street. Different to the work of George Carter, this company weaved their own plush at a factory in Lancashire as opposed to simply buying it. In this early Victorian time hats were very popular, and this particular company was reputed as the world’s largest hat manufacturer in 1843.

The Hamlet’s unbeaten start to 2020 comes to an end

By Simeon Wright sportsdesk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET conceded three goals in the last fourteen minutes against Havant & Waterlooville on Tuesday night as their unbeaten start to the year came to an end.

The visitors had a chance to go ahead six minutes before half-time when Wes Fogden was fouled in the box, but Danny Kedwell’s penalty came back off the crossbar.

Dulwich boss Gavin Rose brought on Dominic Vose and Connor Hunte at halftime. Danny Mills went close for the hosts before Charlie Grainger made a superb save to deny Kedwell.

And the Hamlet took the lead in the 51st minute through Mills.

It looked like Grainger was going to deny Havant something from the game when he produced three brilliant stops.

But Paul Doswell’s side got their reward in the 76th minute following a swift counter-attack and another foul in the area on Fogden. This time it was Sam Magri who stepped up and he beat Grainger from twelve yards.

Havant then took the lead when Alfie Rutherford seized on a sloppy pass to

Rutherford added a third in the last minute.

The previous Saturday, the Hamlet had Shamir Mullings to thank for a point at Champion Hill, as his injury-

time equaliser saved their unbeaten start to 2020 against Chippenham Town.

The 21st-placed visitors arrived in south London on a dreadful run of four defeats in five, but, buoyed by new manager Mike Cook, almost claimed

and I was lucky enough to get a move and experience playing higher up. But coming back, I think that this is one of the best set-ups out of the professional game. Credit to the manager for that.

“It’s enjoyable, but at the same time professional. Even though it’s not actually [fully] professional.”

An injury-time equaliser from Shamir Mullings extended Dulwich’s unbeaten start to the new year (before the loss to Havant on Tuesday) against Chippenham last Saturday, but skipper Taylor admitted it was a predominantly lacklustre display from Gavin Rose’s team.

“We weren’t at it. We started very slow and it took until their goal for us to actually get going and start playing with

a purpose.

“For the last ten, fifteen minutes we looked like a threat and like we could go on and win the game at the end.”

The Hamlet made a positive start to the season before a poor run of results at the end of 2019 saw them plummet down the table.

They went unbeaten in the first four games of 2020 before that Havant defeat Taylor said: “We started the season quite well and then had a very long blip, but in the past three or four weeks we’ve come together, know exactly what we want from each other, and are building week-in, week-out. You’re now seeing a difference in results.”

Versatile midfielder turned rightback Ben Chapman hammered the post from the edge of the box in the final quarter of the match, before Mills headed over what might have been Dulwich’s last big opportunity.

But Champion Hill would erupt in the 90th minute, when Mullings stroked in a third goal since joining on loan from Aldershot via a deflection. Minutes later, the striker almost won it, but could only find the top netting with a close-range header.

Hamlet stay in fifteenth place in National League South after missing the chance to go eleventh on Tuesday.

They are ten points off the play-offs and five above the relegation zone.

Dulwich travel to Dartford this Saturday for a 3pm kick-off.

All-action Quade Taylor-made for skipper role

The ex-Crystal Palace man, 26, returned to first club Hamlet in 2016, and Taylor’s experience, which includes a Championship appearance for Bolton Wanderers while on loan, has landed him the captain’s armband for recent games.

Speaking after Dulwich’s 1-1 draw against Chippenham at Champion Hill last weekend, Taylor said: “When I was younger here it was really good

Monakana gunning for success with the Hamlet

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JEFFREY MONAKANA came through at Arsenal and has played in the Scottish and Romanian leagues – and now he wants to pass on what he has learned to Dulwich Hamlet’s young players.

Monakana, 26, was told he was “crazy” when he decided to leave the Gunners, and there followed spells with a host of clubs including Preston, Brighton, Aberdeen and FC Voluntari before he dropped into non-league football.

He joined the Hamlet last summer and has been one of their best players this season.

One of his early influences was Arsene Wenger.

“I spoke to him a few times. I’m from Congo, so we do speak French,” Monakana told Dulwich’s website.

“He obviously knew that and I spoke to him a few times. A real humble guy.

I spoke to some of the players too, like [Emmanuel] Adebayor.

“It was great being able to watch them train and all of that gave you that hunger to play professional football. That’s the reason why I ended up going out earlier than I should’ve done. Everyone was telling me, you’re crazy to leave Arsenal, but I felt like I needed to play first team football right there and then.”

“I think it was probably the best decision I made in my career going [to Preston]. I think once I went there everything just clicked, I was doing things that I never knew I could do.

Everyone wants to be entertained, so when you’re running at players and making stuff happen, you start to become a fan favourite and the fans, to this day, are always messaging me.

I was scoring goals, always assisting, winning Man of the Matches. It was just a really good time for me.

“I’d never moved away from home, I’d never played anywhere else...I didn’t even know how to cook! All of them life lessons I had to learn while also trying to play for the first team.”

Monakana is always available to offer advice to the younger players at Dulwich.

He said: “When I can, I’ll always speak to them. You’ve got some real good talent here, like Aaron Barnes, Dylan Kearney and Ben Chapman.

Young players who are trying to make their mark in the game and sometimes I do try to pull them to one side and say, ‘Maybe you should do this or maybe watch this’ - to try and help them in a way I never really had when I was younger.”

Despite Tuesday night’s defeat to Havant, the Hamlet have made a positive start to 2020.

Monakana added: “I know for a fact that we’ve got a squad that can do something and I know we all believe that we still could do something this season in the league.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk PECKHAM TOWN manager Mary Phillip praised the local support and said she was “proud” of her team after their epic comeback from three goals down against Hilltop in the quarter-finals of the London Senior Trophy last weekend.

Moses Abioye was Town’s hat-trick hero and Kevin Dance scored two minutes from time to complete a 4-3 win.

Abioye gave the Menace hope before half-time to make it 3-1 after the visitors had raced three goals clear.

After Phillip’s half-time team-talk, the Hoops immediately put Hilltop under pressure and created numerous chances as they were roared on by the Menace Ultras. Abioye soon struck for his second of the afternoon to reduce the deficit to a goal.

With Herve Mbongue, Nicky Meta and Dance causing threats, and Norman Hong dictating, an equaliser seemed inevitable.

“I'm proud of our young team who are beginning to find their feet, and I want to say a special thank you to the people of Peckham for coming out to support us."

Langmead-Jones after injury and Tristan Demuth replaced top try scorer Hugh Nicholson in the centre.

The Lionesses are currently top of the sixth tier and look certainties for

promotion as they plot their route back up the league pyramid.

Gregory came through as a MCT post-16 graduate.

She said: “It was great, brilliant, it was a good environment at the college and hopefully it’s the same here with the girls.”

Asked what supporters can expect

from Lionesses games, Gregory added: “Skill, class, a good game to watch and the girls seem really good to play with.

“Hopefully we can keep winning and keep the fans happy. We’re looking for promotion at the end of the season and with a bit of luck we can smash the next division.”

Coach Charlie Pearce said: “After a disappointing result the previous week the boys were fully focused on putting on a performance, which they did from the first whistle, on a difficult pitch that prevented the team from playing the slick football they like to play.

“Although the boys got the goals they did at times make it hard for themselves by overplaying in areas of the pitch that were non-playable causing them to lose the ball.

“But all credit to the team, they all worked hard for each other. It was also a first clean sheet of the season, which the boys are really chuffed about. We would also like to congratulate Harry Wainwright on his man-of-the-match performance.

“Any disappointment the boys had from last week have well and truly gone through this performance.

However, they will again focus, re-group and look to go back into training next week having one eye on the cup game on Sunday.

“They will need to be at their best as it will be a tough test against an Orpington FC side who are going strong this season themselves, so we look forward to welcoming them down looking to engage in a top game of football.”

Of all the evidence of the improvement the Lions have made under Gary Rowtt perhaps this was the most obvious.

Reading arrived in South Bermondsey unbeaten in seven league games since early December but left with no points and without a shot on target.

The Royals hadn’t conceded more than one goal in a game in that spell, either, but where lucky to depart The Den with only a losing deficit of two after being bombarded with 22 shots, of which eight were on target.

They are one of only two teams, the other Barnsley, to give Rowett a taste of what it’s like to lose since he took over from Neil Harris. That’s sixteen games in all competitions.

Millwall now have 44 points after 28 games, matching their total haul over 46 games last season.

In Rowett’s fifteen league games in charge, the Lions have accumulated 29 points, the joint-most in the Championship over that period along with Brentford, who shade the form table on goal difference.

Jed Wallace created more chances against Reading than eight other teams in the Championship last weekend.

Want more? There was a remarkable statistic posted by Twitter user Dawn Mells over the weekend: Including and since the 2-1 win over Charlton in Rowett’s second home game in charge, the manager’s substitutes have contributed to ten goals (eight goals, two assists).

The transformation has been amazing.

Harris left after seven games without and win and though caretaker Adam Barrett roused the side with four points from

three games – including a 2-1 win over the next league opponents, Leeds – Rowett has taken it to another level.

Rowett’s humility has also shone through. He is certainly not taking all the credit. He has said repeatedly the squad Harris built is full of character.

There were several times when home fans chanted, ‘There is only one Gary Rowett’ on Saturday. Rowett was asked about that afterwards. “I think the fans have been brilliant, I have to say. The whole club, the fans, it’s just been an absolute pleasure so far, this job.

“This job has just been a really easy job.

The fans got behind the players as well, they were working so hard on the pitch.

“The fans help us here, that’s the beauty of it. When the team needs a bit of help the fans get behind the team. It’s not a set of fans that gets really disappointed if the team is not winning. They try to encourage the team and help them.

“That kind of energy transmits around the stadium. The players certainly appreciate it and I appreciate it. It’s been a really good start for us.”

It’s more than a start. Rowett has overseen almost a third of a season and Millwall continue to show improvement.

But despite how dominant Millwall were against the Royals, they still benefitted from referee Keith Stroud missing a blatant handball by Connor Mahoney before the opening goal. Mahoney practically shovelled the ball forward with his right arm before finding Jed Wallace whose cross Jake Cooper struggled to get out from under his feet before Matt Smith pounced to lash in a shot with the aid of a slight deflection off Michael Morrison past goalkeeper Rafael Cabral.

Maybe Stroud had let himself be affected after he had been booed off at half-time.

The home fans felt decisions were already going against them before Stroud spoke to both managers in the first half. An

announcement over the public-address system after half-time, following alleged homophobic abuse from the East Stand, explained why the game had been held up.

Eleven minutes after Smith’s opener the Lions made the points safe. And it was a long time coming for Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.

It was Jed Wallace who again created the opening. Wallace ran directly with the ball, drawing the away defence before slipping Bodvarsson in on the left side of the box.

Former Royals striker Bodvarsson hadn’t scored for Millwall in seventeen previous league games, but the way he curled the ball around Cabral with his right foot and into the corner you wouldn’t have thought so.

Reading had one big chance to get a goal, after the Lions had taken the lead, when John Swift should have done better than shoot wide from eight yards out from Ovie Ejaria’s cross.

Earlier Murray Wallace had made an outstanding tackle to deny Sam Baldock a clear shot on goal.

It was just one of a number of outstanding contributions on a day when Millwall allowed their fans to continue to dream.

Out of the Woods Midfielder wants to make up for lost time after ‘frustrating’ Stoke spell EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk RYAN WOODS knew Millwall fans liked a tackle – but wasn’t quite aware just how much until last Saturday’s game against Reading.

Woods, 26, made his Lions debut against the Royals after his loan switch from Stoke last week.

In the first half of the game, Woods was initially beaten by John Swift before he chased down the Reading midfielder and won back possession with a superb challenge.

That contribution had The Den on its feet as they appreciated the efforts of their new midfielder.

“I was aware that’s the sort of stuff they like but I wasn’t quite aware how much they did like it,” Woods told the News this week. “It was great to hear.

The fans were brilliant with me and hopefully there’s a lot more to come from me. With a run of games hopefully I can get back to my best.

“You have to give 110 per cent anyway and the majority of fans in this league especially will appreciate you for that.

“Obviously I want to show them my quality on the ball as well and hopefully that will come.

“I really enjoyed it. That’s the main reason I joined the club, I want to come and play as many games as possible.

The fans were brilliant with me and it was a great result to top it off.

Ryan Woods had just one training session before his Millwall debut

“I felt a few aches and pains towards the end of the game with the pace and tempo of it, but with more games it will just become natural to me.”

Woods was signed for Millwall by the manager who brought him to Stoke, Gary Rowett.

The pair were seen in conversation at the bet365 Stadium after the Lions and the Potters drew 0-0 last Saturday week.

“That was just a bit of banter between us,” Woods explained. “Obviously I was aware that he wanted to bring me here for some time. I’ve got a good relationship with him and hopefully I can pay back the belief he has shown in me to bring me here.

“He’s done brilliantly so far. I always say the proof’s in the putting. He’s done wonders and hopefully we can continue that.

“I want to do well for the club.

Millwall’s a Championship club, just because it’s not got as big a name as Stoke doesn’t make a difference.

As long as I come here and enjoy my football and we win games that’s all I want to do.”

Woods was a regular under Rowett in the first half of the 2018-19 season, but fell out of favour after Nathan Jones replaced the current Lions boss.

Jones was sacked last November, and Woods started in Michael O’Neill’s first five games, but didn’t feature at all in the next seven.

He admitted his time at Stoke has been “frustrating” but he was made to feel immediately welcome at Millwall

as Jed Wallace and Alex Pearce arranged for him to stay in the same hotel as them before his debut.

They went out for dinner on Friday night, along with Woods’ midfield partner against Reading, Jayson Molumby.

Woods said: “All the lads have been brilliant. Jed and Pearcey went to Karen [Wilson, club secretary] and sorted it out for me. That shows the character of the lads at the club. There’s a great atmosphere in the dressing room and it’s great to be involved in.

“I’m free to play in whatever position the gaffer thinks is right for the game.

I’m predominantly a holding midfield player who likes to get on the ball and start attacks off.

“As you saw on Saturday a little bit I can also run around, make a few tackles. I think Jays managed to get on the ball a little bit more than me.

“We didn’t really talk about [the partnership], to be honest. He was actually one of the lads we went out for food with on the Friday night. He’s a great lad and it just worked.

“I know he likes to run around a lot as well. I felt if I held my position a little bit more then we would be balanced in midfield and have good shape in and out of possession.

“It’s there for everyone to see that I had a frustrating time at Stoke. The most important thing for me was to go out and play games.

“I want to come here and do my best for myself and the club. We’ll see what happens at the end of the season.”

Jed reveals ex-Lions manager’s reaction to free-kick goal EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JED WALLACE scored one of the goals of Millwall’s season against Cardiff on Boxing Day – and revealed Neil Harris put him in a headlock after the game.

Wallace joked to Southwark News his aim was to “ruin” former Lions boss Harris’ Christmas, and the Millwall attacker was nominated for December’s goal of the month for his festive hit at the Cardiff City Stadium.

That earned the Lions a point against the Bluebirds, and Wallace also offered his opinion on what it was like to face a Harris side.

Wallace said: “He put me in a headlock in the tunnel and gave me a bit of stick after the game. It was a bit of a scrappy game and I realised out on the pitch how difficult it must have been to play against us the last three or four years.

“There’s no space to get anywhere.

getting better all the time. People know me well enough, I know my strengths and weaknesses and delivery was something I wanted to

work on. I think this season it’s been good.

“There are still certain parts of it I want to work on and improve.

Everyone knows how good we are on set-plays, and getting them right is key.”

Meanwhile, Wallace was the only current Lions player named in the club’s official team of the last decade.

And he reckons there wouldn’t be much in a contest between those legends and Gary Rowett’s side.

“I actually thought it would be a good game between our current team and that team, which shows how far we’ve developed as a group,” Wallace said.

“I played with a lot of players in that team. I’ve played with and been managed by some iconic Millwall players.

“The big thing that sets those players apart is their mentality. They roll their sleeves up and are big characters. The likes of me, Coops [Jake Cooper] and Thommo [Ben Thompson] hopefully can one day be in a place where people speak about us the way they speak about those players.”

Winger playing with more attacking freedom under new boss

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk CONNOR MAHONEY has explained why he thinks he struggled in the early part of the season – saying he was forced into too much defensive work which blunted his attacking edge.

Mahoney, 22, was signed by Neil Harris from Bournemouth in the summer and there was a lot of expectation that he would make a big impact.

But after a promising beginning, Mahoney was taken off in six of the nine games he started under Harris, and was criticised by the former Lions boss for not crossing the ball enough in the 2-1 defeat at home to QPR in September.

Gary Rowett replaced Harris in October and Mahoney has played on the left side of the attack in a 5-2-3 formation. He started there when Millwall defeated Swansea 1-0 in November for their first away win of the Championship season. The former Blackburn player also has two goals and two assists in his last three home games.

Mahoney felt he was spending more time going towards his own goal that the opposition’s under Harris.

“It was difficult,” Mahoney admitted.

“Playing under the old gaffer I felt I was defending more than attacking. I was covering the full-back’s position and when I got the ball I had no energy because I’d been defending for the full game.

“But playing this new formation with this gaffer he wants the wingers to stay higher and get on the ball to create. He wants the defenders to do the defending and for us to win the game.

“The past few games that’s what I’ve done and what the other wingers have tried to do. That benefits me. The wingers here want to get on the ball and create, we don’t want to be going back defending our own box. If we’ve got to do that then we will, but the defenders can first and foremost do their jobs and we’ll go and win the game for them.

“I said a few times [about wanting to be more attacking] but I didn’t really have big conversations with [Harris]. He left and the new gaffer came in and I think his formation works down to a tee for us.

“Three at the back has been very good and then we can switch up and go 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 just to make oppositions think

about that.

“We’ve got good balance. I don’t have to worry about someone beating Muzza [Murray Wallace], because he’s a solid defender. It takes the pressure off me and then when I get the ball I can do my thing going forward and create and score and set up goals. Ultimately that will win us the game.

“It’s good to have two good defenders in the wide positions with Muzza and Mahlon [Romeo] so we can go and do what we want going forward.

“Confidence is a big thing for me. When I’m confident that’s when I play my best football. But I try to stay on a steady path.

I always go into a game wanting to do well and I’ve had a couple of good performances now so I want to keep building on that.

“Everything happens for a reason.

Moving down here and living in London has been wonderful. Look at where we are now in the table. The club gave me the platform to try and play as many games as possible and I think it’s a great fit for me.

“I want to try and get on the ball more away from home. I played against Stoke but the conditions and the way the game went wasn’t very good.

“When we go away we need to try and play exactly like we do at The Den, get on the ball and assert ourselves. That will come in time, we’ve had some good victories away from home and The Den is looking like a solid place for us. Teams

don’t really want to go there.”

Mahoney explained how Rowett has changed the side’s fortunes, with just two defeats in fifteen league games under the former Derby and Stoke boss.

Mahoney said: “It’s been slow and steady.

He came in and said we might play three at the back in a few weeks. We worked on it on the training ground and when he thought we were ready we went and played it against Swansea and got the win.

“It’s nice to have the option of playing three or four at the back and we look comfortable in either formation.

“It is the best changing room I’ve ever been in. You come in every morning looking forward to going to work, it’s a good environment.

“The lads are absolutely unbelievable with everyone, there are no bad eggs in there. We’re very lucky to have such a good squad and a good group of lads.

“Everyone around the ground is very positive so it’s a good time to be at Millwall.

No one expected us to be where we are so we’re just going to keep playing with freedom.

“Once you start looking at where you are in the table you can start dropping off it. We shouldn’t be up there where we are with some of the other teams and their budgets. But we’ve got a lot of fight in that dressing room and hopefully that can take us a long way.

“There’s no pressure on us.”

FA Cup holds special memories for Lion CONNOR MAHONEY feels he has the composure to unlock Sheffield United in the FA Cup this weekend – after being unfazed making his debut in the competition aged just sixteen.

Mahoney was still a month short of his seventeenth birthday when he came on for Blackburn in a third-round replay against Manchester City in January 2014.

That City side featured James Milner and Fernandinho, while Sergio Aguero scored twice in a 5-0 win.

Millwall take on the Blades this Saturday aiming for a place in the fifth round.

“I made my debut for Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup against Man City when I was sixteen,” Mahoney said. “It means something special to me playing at such a big stadium at such a young age.

“I was up against Gael Clichy. I only came on for a few minutes at the end

but got on the ball and went past him a few times, which was nice. Something like that will always stay in my memory.

“I had just signed for Rovers so it was a bit crazy. You kind of forget about everything around you, you don’t even realise where you’re playing and just get on with it. It’s another day at work.

“I hadn’t played in it in a while so it was good to get out there against Newport and get a goal and an assist.

“It’ll be a good game against a Premier League side. We’re at home and will be fully up for it thinking we can get to the next round. Hopefully I can start, make a good contribution again and get a start in the league soon.

“I’m calm, I’m never really nervous.

The spotlight doesn’t really affect me.

I’m trying to work on being a bit louder, stuff like that.

“But I’m not one of those guys who’s going to be shouting a lot. I think I can bring that calmness and composure on the ball to try and unlock defences.”

FA Cup fourth round preview

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL WILL be without Ryan Woods when they take on Sheffield United in the fourth round of the FA Cup this Saturday – but Gary Rowett has faith that Billy Mitchell can take his chance against the Premier League side.

On-loan Stoke midfielder Woods made an impressive debut in the 2-0 Championship win over Reading last weekend.

Woods is cup-tied after playing in the Potters’ 1-0 defeat at Brentford in the third round.

Ben Thompson and Ryan Leonard are injured, so Mitchell, 18, is likely to start alongside Jayson Molumby in midfield as he did in the 3-0 win against Newport.

Rowett could rest some of his firstchoice players, with right-back James Brown also in contention to start. The Lions travel to Elland Road to take on Leeds next Tuesday.

Rowett believes it’s a chance for the younger players to show they can go on and make an impact in the Championship, and he will have no problem pitting them against Chris Wilder’s top-flight high-flyers.

“There’s an argument to say, when do you give a young player the chance to step up? Billy’s not much younger than Jayson Molumby, but because Jayson has played games you kind of forget his age and just trust that he’s going to do it now,” Rowett said.

“Billy Mitchell and Browny are both very good players. Sometimes you have to give them the opportunity. There might be the opportunity for those players at the weekend and if they do get it then I’ll be really interested to see how they do.

“Because if they don’t cope with that type of game then you ask are they going to be able to help us in the Championship. If they do cope with that game then fantastic because you’ve got two young players with lots of potential.

“We have to judge them on little bits of the game, you can’t judge them on their whole performance because they’re playing against a Premier League team who have done really well this season.

It will be a good test for us.

“It’s always a hard balance. I think it’s a great competition and this football club has had a brilliant tradition in

“I don’t expect Sheffield United to do it any differently, I’d imagine they’ll be looking at five or six of their players to come in and perform.

“My argument is we should be able to change some players and still be able to play well, because if we can’t it means our squad’s not strong enough. It’s as simple as that.

“I think there will be an opportunity for some of the lads. How many of

those we’ll wait and see.”

Millwall could face fixture pile-up with Blades draw

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett feels the fixture burden on players needs to be eased – but he acknowledges the financial benefit FA Cup replays can give smaller clubs.

Rowett was a player at thenConference Burton Albion when the Brewers drew 0-0 with a Manchester United side that included Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Wayne Rooney in a thirdround game at the Pirelli Stadium in January 2006.

Burton lost the replay 5-0, but the Old Trafford fixture was a lucrative reward for the club.

If Millwall draw with Sheffield United this Saturday, the replay will take place the midweek after their Championship trip to Sheffield Wednesday. That would mean ten fixtures in 36 days for the Lions up until the end of February.

As their manager, Rowett led Burton to the third round twice, in 2013 and 2014, before the League Two side lost at Leicester and Bournemouth.

“When you’ve worked at a League Two club and you know you can go to a bigger team and get a replay, that can have a massive, massive impact on your future as a club,” Rowett said.

“Burton, for example, when they drew at the Pirelli and took Man United back to Old Trafford, I think the proceeds of that game almost paid for the stadium

with no debt.

“It’s hard when you have replays and I think to limit the number of games we play in this country we have to do something.

“If you look at January, February, you tend not to play as many midweek games. I think you could easily take one or two games out of the festive period and mix them into that to give players more of a sensible run-in in terms of matches.

“I don’t think replays are a huge problem, but I can understand the desire to limit games in some way.”

Rowett will pit his managerial wits this weekend against Chris Wilder, whose Blades side are being lauded for their performances in the top flight

after promotion last season.

It won’t be the first time the bosses will have been in competition.

Rowett added: “Chris is someone I’ve come across loads. I played against his Halifax team when I was playing nonleague for Burton.

“When I was Burton manager he was Oxford manager so I played against him many times.

“He’s a really good guy. I remember one game I went in before the kick-off for a drink, which is very, very unusual.

That’s the type of guy he is, he’s a really warm character.

“He’s done brilliantly. I’ve got nothing but respect for him and it will be good to catch up with him for a quick beer after the game I’m sure.”

Rowett still wants to boost his squad but said he would “walk away” from any deal that isn’t right for the club.

At the start of the January window the Lions were targeting a left-sided player, a midfielder and an attacker.

Ryan Woods arrived from Stoke last week. But Rowett stressed it would not be a concern if that was the only January arrival.

“There’s a pool of players we’re looking at. We’re not desperately looking, I don’t think we have to bring one in to define our season.

We have to be a little bit careful,” Rowett said.

“The midfield one was an obvious one, we needed a player in there.

Elsewhere I think we’ve got huge potential in one or two players who maybe haven’t quite hit those marks yet.

Woods fell out of favour at Stoke under Nathan Jones and then Michael O’Neill after briefly regaining his place.

Rowett added: “That’s a manager with his own ideas. As with any manager you’re then judged on the results. Woodsy’s argument would be that they weren’t winning as many games when he was out of the side as they were when he was in it.

“He’s an influential player. He’s a player that needs to get back to playing regular football to see him at his best.

“You saw Saturday a player that can influence a game, and he’d only trained once after not playing that much. He settled into the group really quickly because he’s a good character.

“Every manager has their own ideas what they want to do and on their style of play. We’re all judged on whether that’s successful or not.”

Woods finalised a move to south London last Friday before making his debut in the 2-0 win over Reading the following day.

Woods and Gregory were team-mates at the Potters this season after the latter’s move from Millwall last summer.

Former Brentford midfielder Woods had a discrete word with Gregory after Millwall had made their interest known.

“I didn’t really have a chance to speak to him that much because I couldn’t really make people aware of what was going on,” Woods said.

“But I did speak to him a little bit. He said the dressing room is fantastic and there are some nice areas around to live in.

“I’m sure I’ll be having a few more conversations with him over the phone and text in the next few weeks.

“I’m still in a hotel but I’m trying to get a place sorted to feel settled and get to know the area. I want to do that as soon as possible.

“I’ve got a fiancée and a little girl of sixteen months. I want to try and get them down here as soon as I can.

“I’ve still got a few friends from Brentford that I’ve been talking to that I can meet up with and have a coffee. The lads here have been brilliant with me and if I need anything or want to do anything they’re more than happy to help out.”
