Councillor who grew up on Aylesbury Estate hopes to take the Southwark seat

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Evelyn Akoto has announced she is standing as Labour’s candidate for Lambeth and Southwark in May’s London Assembly elections.

Pitching herself as the “strong voice” the boroughs need at City Hall, she highlights her record as a Southwark councillor where, as a cabinet member for public safety, she set up the youth panel on knife crime and serious youth crime to help young people find solutions.

She has also highlighted campaigning for more council housing and cleaner air as key challenges to tackle.

capitalise on her strong links to the area, growing up in Kennington and Walworth’s Aylesbury Estate.

In her campaign video she says: “When my parents arrived in London, with a six-yearold me in tow, we moved here to Kennington on the border between Lambeth and Southwark.

“Our neighbouring boroughs share so much in terms of vibrancy, potential, opportunity, but share so many challenges as well.

“When my parents separated, Mum and I moved here to the Aylesbury Estate. We were once described as “the forgotten people”, our area seen as a symbol of urban decay.

“But it was as a result of living here that I decided to get into politics, to be an honest voice of those who had been forgotten, to fight the inequalities.

“But there are new inequalities facing our communities whilst unfortunately the old ones continue to grow.”

She goes on to promise: “If elected to represent you I will work hard on ensuring that City Hall drives forward a strategic approach and I will lead on the fight to reclaim our streets and protect our children.”

Assembly elections will take place on May 7, 2020. Also standing in Lambeth and Southwark are Green candidate Gulnar Hasnain, Lib Dem Florence Mele, and the Tories’ Hannah Ginnett.

Labour’s Florence Eshalomi was voted in as Lambeth and Southwark Assembly Member in the last election in 2016. In December, she became the MP for Vauxhall, a safe Labour seat previously held by Kate Hoey.

Labour’s Sadiq Khan is standing again as London Mayor. Opposition comes from Rory Stewart, a surprise contender standing as an independent after leaving the Conservative Party; the Conservatives’ Shaun Bailey; Liberal Democrat Siobhan Benita, and the Green’s Sian Berry.

MP calls child refugee bill failure ‘sickening’

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Helen Hayes has described the failure to pass an amendment to the withdrawal bill that would continue the right for unaccompanied child refugees to be reunited with their families after Brexit as “sickening”.

Last Wednesday, parliament voted down Amendment 4 to Clause 37 of the European (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill by 348 votes to 252.

“I voted for this amendment,” said Hayes.

“That it was defeated is utterly sickening.

The Tories turning their backs on some of the most vulnerable children in the world, whose only real chance to rebuild their lives is with family in the UK.” Under Theresa May’s the Tories had previously chosen to support the amendment and guarantee the unaccompanied child refugees’ rights, but this has now been scrapped by Boris Johnson’s majority government.

60,000 lEgo masterpiece of evelina

josh@southwarknews.co.uk The Evelina Children’s Hospital has been painstakingly replicated out of 60,000 LEGO pieces.

The 1/50th scale recreation of the hospital, which serves Southwark, south London and further afield, features more than 200 mini LEGO figures – including one designed to resemble the hospital’s patron, The Duchess of Cambridge.

Eight-year-old Marina Yaqobi helped to unveil the detailed replica by placing the final figurine on the model, made to look like her.

The youngster, from Croydon, spent eight months at the hospital last year for a serious lung problem and kidney failure.

She spent two months in intensive care before finally receiving her dad’s kidney in September.

The model was donated by the charity Fairy Bricks – which gives LEGO to children in hospital – and designed by charity volunteer, Gary Davis.

“It was a challenge at times, but I hope I’ve done the building justice,” he said.

“I’m really looking forward to Evelina London’s staff, as well as the children and

young people, seeing it for the first time.”

Working from photographs, building plans and tours given by Evelina staff, Gary aimed to create the most accurate replica of the hospital as possible, even down to the atrium’s glass ceiling.

Offices, examination rooms, intensive care units and even the coffee shop are replicated in the incredibly detailed model.

“Evelina London is a truly special place to work and this brilliant LEGO model captures a lot of the magic of the building, as well as the incredible people inside it,” said Susan Pruden, Evelina London’s play specialist team lead.

“It’s a wonderful thing for the children and young people who come to Evelina London to see and we’re incredibly grateful to Fairy Bricks.

“We can’t thank Gary enough for lovingly creating such a brilliantly detailed model.”

The LEGO model is due to stay at Evelina London until September 2020, before being taken to Skaerbaek in Denmark for an international LEGO Exhibition, then to the Great Western LEGO Show in Swindon the following week.

Shaughna is hoping to find love on the TV

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey woman is hoping to find the love-of-her-life on ITV’s hit series, Love Island.

Shaughna Phillips, 25, is among the singletons starring in the show’s first ever winter instalment, which hit our screens on Sunday.

The democratic services officer at Lambeth Council – who quit her town hall job to pursue romance in the South African villa – has initially been coupled up with contestant Callum Jones from Manchester.

Speaking before entering the villa, Ms Phillips described herself as “funny, easy-going but a little bit bossy.”

“I’m chatty, funny and clever – people won’t expect it from me,” she said.

“When they hear me speak about certain things they’ll be shocked. I like to get on with everyone, too.”

She rates her best feature as her lips – “I’ve spent enough money on them!” and says she is a “solid 7.5” for looks.

So far it hasn’t been plain sailing in love for the 25-year-old. “Being on a first date with a guy and getting a cab home to mine and my most recent exboyfriend was sat outside my house in

his car crying,” she says of her worst ever date.

“I was furious. The date didn’t know how to react and just pretended to be on the phone. I ended up being with him for a year and a half after that.”

She is hoping to find a man who is “funny, a little bit smart, not smarter than me as I’d get really annoyed,” on the show which sees singletons pair up in a series of challenges in a bid for love.

Ms Phillips has been backed in her ambitions by Lambeth’s Deputy Council leader, Claire Holland, who said she was rooting for the former

town hall employee on the show.

The local lass is not the first person with a Southwark link to try to find love on the popular show.

Last year, 20-year-old Sherif Lanre, who had played for the Dulwich-based Old Alleynians rugby club, was forced to leave the series in nine days after breaking its rules.

In a statement at the time, the chef said: “In a case of poor judgement, I broke the villa rules and as a result agreed with the producers that it was best for me to leave the villa.”

Love Island continues week nights and Sundays at 9pm on ITV 2.

Eleven years for kidnapping and sexually assaulting boy in park Burgess Park

Court heard that Upton refused to leave his cell for sentencing

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A homeless man who kidnapped a schoolboy playing tennis and abused him in his Burgess Park woodland lair has been jailed for eleven years.

Shane Upton, 24, sexually assaulted the eight-year-old in his makeshift tent as a frantic search led by the lad’s mum ensued in Burgess Park.

The youngster told his mother he was going to use the toilet a few yards away, while happily taking a tennis lesson with his brother on June 17 this year.

When he came out of the cubicle Upton was standing in his path, blocking the exit.

Upton told the terrified boy he needed help finding a house, before leading him through the back exit of the toilets and into his den on the other side of the park.

He was arrested near the scene after tripping over during a police chase which involved a helicopter and officers on horseback.

Jurors convicted the paedophile of kidnap, sexual assault on a child under thirteen, and two counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

Inner London Crown Court heard on Wednesday, January 8, that Upton refused to leave his cell and attend his sentence.

The dock was empty as the court was told how the boy has been left unable to play his favourite sport or go to the toilet on his own.

Adrian Amer, prosecuting, said: ‘The boy said that the man locked in the entrance [sic] to the men’s toilets and then locked the cubicle door.

‘The complainant said that he tried to shout for help, but the man covered his mouth with his hands.

“He said that he felt scared and the man told him not to be scared.”

Upton then performed sex acts on him.

“He said this happened for a minute and then it stopped and he did it again,’” Mr Amer said.

Upton then took the boy out of the toilet’s emergency exit.

He walked the boy around Burgess Park and a nearby housing estate for nearly an hour, before taking him to his tent.

“The boy said that the man told him that he lived in a tent and took him to a tent somewhere in Burgess Park,” Mr Amer said.

“The boy said that when they got in the tent the man went inside the tent and told him to come in.

“The boy said that he did not want to run away because he was scared and he knew that the man would catch him.

“He then describes going into a wooden cave made out of twigs and leaves. The man told him to lie down on his back.

“The man then pulled his trousers and pants down.

“The boy said that he was scared when this was happening so he closed his eyes because he wanted it to stop.

Inner London Crown Court “He said that the man stopped when he realised the police were outside the tent.

“The boy said that the man ran off when he realised that the police were there. He said police chased the man and he then ran to the police officers.

“The boy said that he was very scared so he pulled up his pants and trousers and ran out of the cave.

“He said that the incident lasted about three to four minutes and that when he was in the tent he could hear a helicopter.

“Police on foot and on horseback and from a police helicopter conducted a search of the park,’ said Mr Amer.

The court heard last Wednesday that the paedophile had a history of violent offending dating back to a conviction for arson in 2009.

Judge Nigel Seed QC said that the attack was “an opportunistic moment that quickly became carefully planned.”

The judge said: ‘On June 17, the eightyear-old complainant went, as he and his brother did every week, to tennis lessons in Burgess Park.

“It was something he enjoyed doing, but not anymore. In fact he has not played tennis since that day. This is a result of what the defendant did to him on that day.

“The complainant left the tennis court, where his mother was sitting waiting for the tennis lesson to finish, to use the lavatory.

“It was something he had done before and was capable of doing on his own.

“On this occasion as he emerged the defendant was there waiting. This might have been opportunistic moment but it quickly became carefully planned, because the defendant then locked the door to the lavatory, he removed the complainant’s clothing.

“The defendant then led the complainant out the back to avoid the attention of the cafe attendant but mercifully this was caught on CCTV. “He led him around the park while the complainant’s mother and the tennis coaches went searching for him.

“Ultimately a police helicopter was deployed and the police located the defendant in the undergrowth with the

complainant.

“He has substantial previous convictions, mainly for violence mostly on family members.

“There are serious psychiatric issues facing this defendant, who is clearly autistic and has many other problems as well.

“But [a doctor] found that his resistance to participate [in court proceedings] is entirely wilful and not arising from any mental disorder, psychotic or otherwise.

“The complainant no longer plays tennis. He’s scared of going to Burgess Park, he now suffers from anxiety and he’s had serious health problems, physical problems because of his fear of going to the lavatory and disturbed sleep patterns.”

Upton, of no fixed address, denied but was convicted of one charge of kidnap, one of sexual assault, one of committing an offence with intent to commit a sexual offence and two of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

The jury cleared him of two charges of assaulting an emergency worker.

They were earlier directed by the judge to clear Upton of a further count of

sexual assault.

He was sentenced to eleven years’ imprisonment and will remain on the Sex Offenders’ register for the rest of his life.

GP surgery closure ‘would save £21,000 a year’

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk NHS documents have shed more light on the decision to close Maddock Way surgery in Camberwell’s Brandon Estate – £21k a year savings.

As the News has reported, local councillors and MP Neil Coyle are lobbying Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) – the arm of the NHS which decides which services to fund in across the borough – to change

its decision.

The surgery, rated good overall, has 3,153 registered patients, a number which has declined by seven per cent in the last five years.

Its only GP, Dr Sinha, is due to retire at the end of March and all patients have been told to re-register elsewhere before then.

At a public meeting in December, a representative from the CCG explained that it is so unlikely that any group would take over the practice that they haven’t actively explored alternatives to diving up between other surgeries

across the borough.

A report from the Southwark Primary Care Commissioning Committee, from November last year, states that a patient list of 6,000 is not financially viable, that there are no suitable premises to be moved into as the current lease has expired, and “initial engagement with twelve local practices indicates there is capacity within one mile to accommodate a minimum of 13,150 patients at alternative practices”.

A section entitled “what other options were considered?” has been left blank other than “N/A”.

Shard Climber vows to ‘shock the world again’

josh@southwarknews.co.uk The stuntman who scaled the Shard in just 45 minutes without safety gear has vowed to shock the world again – but won’t reveal how.

George King, 20, was released from Pentonville prison on Friday, after being prosecuted by the Shard’s managers for his daring climb without ropes in July last year.

Mr King served three months of a six-month prison sentence after being found guilty of contempt of court for breaking a court injunction banning climbers from scaling the 1,000ft skyscraper.

Speaking to the News following his release, the stuntman vowed to continue pursuing climbs and said the prison sentence will not break his spirit.

“It’s not going to stop me,” he said. “This is just a process, it’s not going to break my spirit. I’m still the same person I was a year ago.”

He was greeted by cheering supporters, friends and family upon his release from Pentonville, a Category B prison, even including world-famous ‘French Spiderman’ Alain Robert.

“He picked me up in his Mustang and we did a victory lap of Pentonville,” laughed George.

As reported by the News, the climber’s family have previously hit out at the decision to send the-then 19-year-old to Pentonville, alongside those convicted of violent offences.

“The Shard went out of their way to try and incarcerate me,” said George, originally from Oxford. “This is about justice, because it was incredibly unjust.

“I should have been in an open prison, all the prison wardens were quite shocked. I’m definitely still adjusting.”

The 20-year-old says he saw regular outbreaks of violence, including stabbing attempts, during his three-month spell behind bars.

He warned other climbers that if they wished to repeat his feat that they might face an even heavier sentence than he had been handed.

However he added, if they were willing to take the risk, “then go for it – but I don’t see many people wanting to do it.”

The daring stuntman still plans to climb skyscrapers as part of his projects, which also including finishing writing books he started while behind bars.

But it is unlikely that the next climb will be in the UK, he said, as “I’ve already ticked that box.”

“I plan to shock the world again – but you’ll have to wait and see,” he said.

Risks highlighted, however, include the fact that the nearest surgery to Maddock Way – a Nexus surgery – has been in special measures.

Maddock Way is currently operating on a “hold over” basis with the support of landlord Southwark Council, after its lease expired in March 2018.

But the big issue is the finances. The report explains that if the decision is reversed, “The CCG will need to arrange for a caretaker practice pending preprocurement of the contract.

“This will entail a temporary lease being agreed between a caretaker

practice and the landlord, with consequent additional costs that the CCG will need to absorb; and more so because of the very small list size which is likely to be an unattractive proposition for both caretaking and substantive contract providers.”

Furthermore, closing the premises would, the report claims, “potentially deliver savings of £17,282 per annum for reimbursable rent and £4,000 per annum for rates”.

sit-in protest after zumba class cancelled

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Police were called to a residents’ sit-in protest in a community centre on the Silwood Estate after their Zumba class was cancelled.

Fed-up members of the St Helena and Oldfield Residents’ Association (SOTRA) staged the protest after the fitness class they had organised on Thursday was cancelled by the managers of the Lewington Community Centre, L&Q. In a long-running dispute, the group allege that their activities are being interfered with by L&Q and are cancelled at short notice, while events being run by private groups in the space are left to go ahead.

Since Thursday’s protest – to which two police officers were called – the TRA members say they have been denied access to the building, forcing the cancellation of a youth club run on Friday evenings as well.

“We’re fed up with them cancelling our meetings. We had two hours’ notice for the youth club [cancellation],” the group’s treasurer Jacqueline Willis told the News.

“We did a sit-down protest in the building, they said they were locking up.

“At no point did they ask us to leave the building. Since then they’ve changed they’ve changed the password on the door, we’ve been locked out the building basically.

“It’s making us ill because it’s quite emotional. They’re trying to wear us out.”

However, Ms Willis alleged, a noncommunity event was allowed to go ahead as scheduled on Thursday, despite being told the building had to close due to a shortage of staff.

The row centres on the TRA’s access to the community hall while other groups whom are renting the use of the space are allowed to use it for their occasions.

Council doesn’t light footpath to ‘discourage anti- social Including convicted murderer behaviour’ A Lambeth Council parks manager has told residents that park public footpaths are often deliberately left without lighting to “discourage antisocial behaviour”, writes Katherine Johnston...

Andrew Sawdon, a Brandon Estate resident, was left baffled after his complaints about broken lighting in Kennington Park extension, sent in November, were unheeded for two months.

In an email sent on January 8, a Lambeth Council manager explained to him, seemingly unaware that the park was open all night with a public footpath running through it.

“We are not aware of any legal requirement for there to be lighting in parks, in a lot of circumstances we do not have lighting to avoid antisocial behaviour and night-time use of parks,” the council officer said, before saying options for repair were being “investigated”.

As the News has reported, lighting on the estate and surrounding areas is a key issue for residents who say drug dealing and violence takes place in unlit areas.

A Lambeth Council spokesperson said: “Safety, in our parks and elsewhere in Lambeth, is a key priority for the council and we do everything we can to respond to residents’ concerns. “ Providing the columns are the responsibility of Lambeth Parks and we will arrange repairs via the council’s corporate Facilities Management contract.

“In some cases the issue may simply be a bulb replacement; however we often find with lighting that faults are caused by more complicated issues and can take a relatively long period of time to rectify.”

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he hopes those involved in tackling Usman Khan in November’s terror attack are given medals – including the convicted murderer who tackled him with a narwhal tusk.

Steven Gallant, 42, is serving a life sentence for the murder of exfirefighter Barrie Jackson in Hull in 2005.

But he was one of those who tackled killer Usman Khan, whose attack claimed the lives of Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones, while on licence to attend a rehabilitation event at Fishmonger’s Hall.

At Prime Minister’s Questions, Gallant’s MP, Karl Turner, asked if the 42-year-old’s bravery would be recognised despite his conviction for murder.

“In 2005, my constituent Steven Gallant did a bad thing for which he is serving a life sentence in prison,” he said.

“However, on 29 November he was the third man on London Bridge. He wrestled the knife-wielding murderous terrorist to the ground so that police marksmen could shoot him dead.

“Steven is rightly serving life in prison, but will the Prime Minister congratulate and pay tribute to Steven for his bravery that day, which no doubt saved lives?”

Dubbed Lion of London Bridge Roy Larner Mr Johnson said he was “lost in admiration for the bravery of Steven Gallant, and indeed of others who went to the assistance of members of the public on that day and fought a very determined terrorist.”

He added: “Obviously, it is not for the Government to decide these things, but it is my hope that that gallantry will in due course be recognised in the proper way.”

The call comes despite a snub for 2017 London Bridge hero, Roy Larner, who was not awarded a bravery medal for his actions in tackling terrorists.

Separately, this week the government said it is considering a new law to ban

Concerns were raised by Chief Coroner Mark Lucraft QC that the London Bridge attacker Khuram Butt had possessed a wide range of extremist material, including Islamic State videos, but was not prosecuted because of a gap in the law.

In a formal response to the Coroner who led the inquest into the 2017 atrocity, Home Secretary Priti Patel

said the Government could legislate to remove the “current gap” in the law.

“The Government accepts this recommendation and is currently considering the necessity for a further offence of possessing the most extremist material which glorifies or encourages terrorism,” wrote Ms Patel.

She added that work is ongoing to “ensure that the tools needed to counter the evolving terrorist threat are kept under review.”

Family hope for reclassification of rape drug

The family of an actor killed by a Borough man who targeted men with a ‘date rape’ drug to rob them are calling for the substance to be reclassified, writes Josh Salisbury...

Anger after another death at dangerous junction Peckham’s councillors said they were “heartbroken” by the tragedy, and frustrated that improvement works had been slow to come.

Councillors Johnson Situ, Cleo Soanes, Barrie Hargrove, Nick Dolezal, Peter Babudu and Jasmine Ali from Southwark said: “We are heartbroken to hear of the tragic death on Peckham High Street today, our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends.

“Sadly this is not the first tragic death on this part of Peckham High Street.

“Yet again it raises the crucial issue of safety on Peckham High Street, a key section of the TfL highway.

“As local councillors we have repeatedly raised road safety on Peckham High Street with TfL and while they insist that they’re working on proposals, today’s death sadly shows that we need a rapid response.

Stunning new lakeside cafe in Southwark Park opens

The Pavillion café, opened to the public earlier this month, is housed in a new building by the park’s lake.

The dog-friendly café is open 9am to 4.30am during winter. Dogs are allowed inside from 9am to 11am but must be kept on a lead at all times.

It serves hot food including full English breakfasts, pizzas, ice-cream, salads, hot drinks and cold beverages.

The café is housed in a new building for the park, beside the lake, which also includes the park’s public toilets.

The one-storey building, made out of white brick to mirror the style of the nearby Southwark Park Gallery.

It was designed by the architects Bell Phillips.

“The organic form is derived from the curved geometry of the park’s historic pathways, the Oval playing fields and the adjacent lake edge,” the firm said of the project. This results in a form that extends into the landscape and welcomes users from all directions.”

“We urge TfL to take immediate action to improve safety on Peckham High Street for the safety of our residents.”

Sam Monck, Head of Delivery Planning for Healthy Streets at TfL, responded to the News’ request to comment on their claims.

Monck did not respond to our query about why improvements had not been completed after previous deaths several years ago, and were still in the planning stage.

He said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who was tragically killed whilst crossing Peckham High Street yesterday.

“Every death on London’s streets is one too many and safety is always our top priority when making changes on our roads.

to reduce danger in Peckham Town Centre as part of our Vision Zero goal of eliminating death and serious injury on London’s roads.

“Proposed upgrades include wider pavements, improved pedestrian crossings and reduced speed limits.

“The engineering scheme in Peckham has been extremely complex to develop, however we remain committed to vital safety improvements there and will be consulting the public on a design early in the coming weeks, with a view to starting work following public feedback.”

Eric Michels, 54, (pictured above left) was killed by drug dealer, Gerald Matovu (pictured above right) in August 2018 after meeting him on the gay dating app, Grindr.

Matovu, of Guildford Street, went to the businessman’s home in Chessington, and gave Mr Michels a fatal dose of GHB. As the father lay dying, Matovu rifled through his possessions and stole his bank card details. Mr Michels was one of twelve men targeted by Matovu and his lover in a 19-month period.

The killer had previously been found guilty of dealing drugs to the Grindr serial killer, Stephen Port, who used GHB to kill four men in Barking, east London.

Mr Michels’s son, Sam, has said the drug should be a Class A drug, rather than its current Class C. “It’s a really really dangerous drug,” he told the BBC, adding that it had killed many people including his father.

The call comes following the conviction of Reynhard Sinaga this month, labelled the most prolific rapist in British legal history.

Sinaga is thought to have used the drug in his rapes and sexual assaults. Police have evidence he targeted at least 190 victims in Manchester, where he lived.

A move to review the controls on GHB has been backed by the Home Secretary, Priti Patel.

“I’m deeply concerned by the use of illegal drugs like GHB to perpetrate these crimes and have asked the independent Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs to expedite a review looking at whether our controls for these drugs are tough enough,” she said earlier this month.

The substance, known as ‘liquid ecstasy’ is a potentially lethal sedative, sometimes used to lower inhibitions.

A similar substance, GBL, which becomes GHB when it enters the body, is used as a wheel polisher.

Emergency services raced to Peckham High Street last Wednesday afternoon (January 8) following reports of a collision between a pedestrian and an HGV near Burger King.

A 48-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene despite paramedics and London’s Air Ambulance arriving within minutes. His next of kin have been informed.

The man has not been named by police but the News understands he has been named locally as Jason Bent, a Peckham local.

Tributes have been shared by his the family on a public Facebook group set up by his sister, Tanya.

She has also lent her support to a petition pushing for the road’s layout to be improved to prevent more deaths.

Mourners described him as “a big friendly giant with a big smile and funny laugh”, “always a gentleman, he had lovely manners and always had a big smile on his face” and “loved by all who knew you”.

The Met said the HGV driver, who has not been arrested, is assisting with enquiries, and urged any witnesses, people with phone footage or dash cam footage to come forward.

In September 2015, tributes poured in for great-grandmother Mary O’Leary who died after being hit by a lorry on the same road.

Two years later, a man died on September 4, 2017 on Peckham High Street. He also had been hit by a lorry.

A petition, to improve the road layout, had gained more than 400 signatures

by Monday.

The petition says: “It is clear to see the road does not have a safe layout and there should be an island in the middle by the traffic lights for people to safely wait at and also outside the Peckham Pulse there should be railing along the centre island to stop pedestrians running across which is very dangerous.

“My heart goes out to the families who have lost loved ones in these horrific accidents and strongly believe something needs to be done to provide a safer crossing for people to get across safely.”

police appeal for footage after scooter rider was left ‘critical’

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Police are appealing for witnesses to a collision outside Brockwell Park which left a teenager in a critical condition.

Officers were called to the scene at the junction of Croxted Road and Norwood Road just after 4.30am on New Year’s Eve. A dark coloured Vauxhall Ziafra is thought to have collided with an e-scooter. Alongside the London Air Ambulance, officers found the rider

of the e-scooter, a 19-year-old man, seriously injured.

He was rushed to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

“I am particularly keen to hear from anyone who has dashcam footage of this incident, or who witnessed the collision personally,” said Detective Constable Croucher of the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

“The dark coloured Vauxhall Zafira that struck... the scooter was equipped with a roof box and will have suffered damage on the front passenger side as a result of the

collision.

“Did you see the vehicle before, during or after the collision? Are you the driver of the vehicle? Do you know who the driver is? If you can help please do the right thing and get in touch.”

Fourth charged in iron miah murder case

The forty-year-old was found collapsed in Nelson Street, Whitechapel, on November 19. He died in hospital two days later. A post mortem found he was killed by a gunshot wound to the head.

On Saturday, The Met confirmed Antonio Afflick-McLeod, aged 28, from Ilford’s Mayfair Avenue had been charged with murder.

Detective Superintendent Nick Sumner said: “This operation is a continued campaign to arrest and charge those involved in bringing and selling drugs in the Soho and Cambridge Circus area.”

Throughout 2019, only 38 per cent of new donors in the borough were men, reflecting a national trend of women being more likely to sign up.

Figures showing donor numbers from January 2019 to the end of November showed 516 women signing up - and just 322 men.

Men’s blood is particularly important because it has higher iron levels.

This means men are less likely to be deferred when putting themselves forward due to low haemoglobin levels.

Men’s blood is also free from the antibodies women can produce during pregnancy - even very short pregnancies the woman may not be aware of.

Antibodies are part of the body’s defence system, and make transfusions more difficult.

Because of this, only men’s blood can be used in some specialist transfusions and blood products including complete blood transfusions in newborn babies, and for plasma - used for patients who have had massive blood loss.

The NHS also gets 93 per cent of platelets - usually given for cancer patients to stop internal bleeding -

from men.

If the trend doesn’t change then blood stocks will come under increasing pressure.

NHS Blood and Transplant’s head of donor recruitment, Mike Stredder, said: “All our donors are amazing. But we need more men to start donating blood in Southwark during the New Year.

“Men’s blood can be used in extraordinary, lifesaving ways, but we don’t have enough new male blood donors coming forward.

“This is not about recruiting as many donors as possible. It’s about getting the right gender mix.

“If you can’t find an appointment right away don’t worry - your blood will do extraordinary things if you donate in a few weeks instead.”

As well as needing more male donors, the NHS has also been on a recruitment drive for more black donors who are ten times more likely to have the Ro blood type needed for treating patients with sickle cell disease.

I made a series of firm pledges in the General Election which will form the basis of my work during this Parliament

his is my first column since the general election, so I’d like to take the opportunity to thank everyone in Dulwich and West Norwood constituency who voted for me to continue to as their Member of Parliament on what was a very difficult night for Labour.

It is an absolute privilege to represent our amazing communities, and I am delighted to have been re-elected.

I will keep working to support my constituents who continue to suffer the consequences of a decade of Tory austerity, and to work with the many incredible

local community organisations who work to bring people together and provide help to those who need it.

I started the New Year in Parliament raising the issue of the government’s huge subsidies for fossil fuel industries with the Chancellor. It’s completely unacceptable in the context of the climate emergency that the government continues to subsidise the fossil fuels which are the cause of the emergency. We need urgent and immediate action, not more hot air from the Tories.

I will continue to represent the pro-European internationalist views of my constituents and campaign for the end to the housing crisis following the general election result we will be leaving the European Union at the end of this month.

Last week saw the bitterly disappointing beginning of the dismantling of our relationship with the EU as the Tories voted down important amendments to the Withdrawal Agreement Bill on issues like protecting the rights of child refugees to be reunited with family members in the UK, maintaining EU standards on animal welfare and environmental regulations, and keeping the UK within the Erasmus student scheme which has enabled thousands of students, many from deprived backgrounds, to study in a European country.

I made a series of firm pledges in the General Election which will form the basis of much of my work during this Parliament, both in Westminster and locally.

I will continue to represent the pro-European, internationalist views of my constituents, campaign for an end to the housing crisis, urgent action to stop the climate emergency and an end to the hostile environment; and I will continue to fight for the funding that King’s College Hospital and our local schools desperately need.

I don’t condone this but the fox problem is out of control, I myself have been attacked by one just walking down my local street, It caused me pain and a doctor’s trip and medication, a friend was also attacked, a neighbour last year woke up to find one on top of him in his bed!! It had got in through the back window, they are cute to look at but ultimately are vermin that carry diseases that CAN make you very ill and can also attack young children and KILL. Something does need to be done about the issue.

Half-a-million bursary for disadvantaged white pupils turned down by Dulwich College As an Old Alleynian I was appalled by this positive discrimination against disadvantaged white pupils. Meanwhile we have a Bursary specifically for black students to go to Cambridge and nobody complains in the slightest.

Under the Equality Act you can take positive action to help groups if there is evidence that they have been disadvantaged. That includes white boys. The problem for the college is that white boys overall don’t suffer disadvantage. A subset do that is primarily to do with poverty.

The Labour Party and Harriet Harman in particular tried to address this by adding a provision to extent provisions to people / boys based on their socioeconomic status.

Unfortunately the coalition government removed those provisions. Stormzy’s grant can be accepted because the majority of black boys and girls statistically suffer disadvantage. If that was not the case his money would also be refused.

adiq Khan’s “vision zero” for London aims to stop deaths and serious injuries on London’s transport system, but clearly something needs to be done now on Peckham High Street .

City Hall believes lower speeds, major works on the most dangerous junctions, improved layouts for walking and cycling, and new safety standards for HGVs and buses can make that aim achievable. But only by 2041.

It’s too soon to say what, if any, of these changes could have saved the life of Jason Bent.

But since 2015, three people have lost their lives on Peckham High Street in similar circumstances.

The News understands protective railings, to stop pedestrians from attempting to cross the busy road were previously removed. Often this type of work is aimed at improving safety for cyclists who can become trapped between HGVs and railings in dangerous turns.

Jason’s family, like three other grieving families, will want answers about why promised improvement works have not yet taken place.

TfL has already identified 73 junctions that have the “worst safety record” and says it is proceeding with a major programme of works to reduce risk.

The key question will be whether Peckham High Street is on this list – and what work will be done and by when.

Zero deaths by 2041 is not good enough. To honour Jason’s memory, change must happen now.

Pub is having nun of it The Old Nun’s Head pub in SE15 has been the victim of what it calls ‘fake’ reviews on TripAdvisor over its uncompromising dislike of figures such as Nigel Farage and Tommy Robinson.

Gym in hot water again for advertising slogan An Elephant and Castle gym has been criticised for a “crass and offensive” ad suggesting fitness classes could help you deal with sleazy bosses.

The billboard advertising Gymbox reads: “Sleazy boss. Gymbox. Muay Thai. #Knee_To.” The #MeToo reference has provoked anger among some, who have pledged to raise the issue with the Advertising Standards Agency after it was posted on Twitter by user Moya Lothian McClean.

It comes after a previous ad, which encouraged gymgoers to get “hot and sweaty with a teacher without getting punished,” also divided opinion.

In a statement at the time, the company said: “Our adverts are intended to be light-hearted and tonguein-cheek … Our members have fed back that they find our adverts amusing, probably because they have a sense of humour.”

The gym chain may not have too much to worry about their latest ad rubbing people up the wrong way.

In 2009, one of its adverts sparked controversy when it encouraged users “to beat up some chavs.”

Despite complaints from the public, the advertising watchdog ruled in the company’s favour.

The latest comes from a supposed burgerordering customer complaining about an antiNigel Farage billboard at the boozer.

“Stood at the bar waiting for a drink I’d ordered listening to people behind the bar laugh about how they’ve written ‘Nigel Farage is banned from here’ on a billboard,” stated the complaint.

He said the gesture made him feel “uneasy and unwelcome,” adding: “Concentrate on your food rather than alienating people unnecessarily.”

The mystery customer did not reckon on the detective skills of the pub’s owner, Nick. The blackboard about Nigel Farage was up for one day during the May 2015 campaign, he hit back.

And on the day in question, the pub wasn’t serving burgers, responds the sleuthing boss – meaning the customer could not have been in the pub when he said he was.

The boom in SE15 property is dubbed the Peckham pull

Staying in SE15, Peckham has been doing a roaring trade in house sales lately – if you have the cash, that is.

According to estate agent’s Mundays, the past year has seen a trend of people moving into the area from Battersea and Clapham.

This “Peckham pull” means they are buying very expensive properties as a result.

“We’ve never seen as many £1million+ sales as in 2019”, it says.

Peckham’s most famous (fictional) son, Del Boy, used to dream of being a millionaire. But now it seems it wouldn’t even guarantee him a place in the postcode.

Lifelong Millwall fan Charlie Wynn suffered a bleed on the brain while training for his third pro bout in March 2018.

The 30-year-old was rushed to

King’s hospital for emergency surgery and has since been recuperating at a neurorehabilitation centre in Tonbridge.

“He’s doing really well, he’s able to speak now, it’s a little more delayed than me or you but it’s still a massive step ahead,” said his sister, Emma.

“He’s not able to walk, he’s still dependent on other people at this point, but that’s what we’re aiming for. We just want to try and push and push, and obviously he’s fighting as much as he

can as well.”

A fundraising appeal for the 10k has so far raised £350 of a £1,000 goal to pay for Charlie’s care, which is not funded by the NHS. “The greatest unknown now is the path ahead for Charlie, what will be his limitations? How long will the road to recovery take?” said Emma in the appeal.

“I don’t have a turbo button so I doubt I’d get anything close to that,” she said.

“But just to complete it for him will be good enough for me.”

Eight Chinese staff working at Sabrina Beauty Salon on Peckham’s Rye Lane were arrested for immigration offences in October after coming to the UK illegally, said police in a letter to Southwark Council published on Wednesday.

Officers have urged Southwark Council to reject the salon’s bid for a licence at a hearing next week.

“We believe that workers have and will be exploited, and the management have failed to comply with a various legislation relating to working practice, employment law and immigration law,” said PC Graham White, of the Met’s Licensing Unit.

Concerns have also been raised about employees at Lucky Nails, a venue on Camberwell Road. Five people from Vietnam were arrested for immigration offences at the premises in July last year.

A second raid in October saw two further arrests, say police, while “a number of other workers had conditions forbidding them from working.”

A licensing bid will also be considered for Ayoyemi Nails, also on Camberwell Road.

In an objection letter, licensing officials say that the UK Border Force found four Vietnamese nationals working as nail operatives at the salon in April, none of whom had the right to work.

One of those was an underage boy,

states the objection, while another was a “potential victim of trafficking.”

Councillors will meet to decide whether the three venues should have a licence to provide nail services to the public today, January 16.

Those carrying out manicures, pedicures or nail extensions in Southwark are required to have a ‘special treatments’ licence.

The nail bar industry is coming under

increasing scrutiny over fears it is a magnet for people trafficking.

Health and safety concerns have also been raised about workers’ exposure to noxious chemicals, skeletal disorders from being hunched over for long hours, and the potential for unlicensed venues to transmit infectious diseases.

The News attempted to contact the three nail bars applying for their licences.

The blaze started at the terraced house in Sutherland Square at around 8.30am.

Fire crews rushed to the fire within five minutes, at 8.37am, but after entering the burning building, found the body of a woman on the ground floor.

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to tackle the blaze in the three-storey terrace, and over half of the ground floor was damaged.

The cause of the fatal blaze is under investigation by the Brigade’s Fire Investigation Unit and the Met. Firefighters managed to get the fire under control shortly after 10am. Fire crews from Peckham, Old Kent Road, Lambeth River and Brixton attended the scene.

The club, catering for the gay subculture of ‘bears’, had its last night operating in its Pulse premises in Sampson and Ludgate Houses just off

Southwark Street in September.

It had lost a court appeal against the start of the development, sparking recriminations about the loss of LGBT nightlife in the borough.

Nearly six thousand people signed a petition calling for the venue to be saved.

Now council officials say they have signed an agreement with the site owners that a new LGBT space will

form part of the development – but that it will not be a club exactly like XXL. “We always said that we would make sure the new development offered a space for our LGBTQ+ community,” said Tooley Street’s Cllr Johnson Situ.

“While the new space will not be a like for like replacement, this agreement ensures it will provide a safe place for people to meet, socialise and celebrate

the diverse LGBTQ+ population in our borough.”

The move was welcomed by Borough and Bankside ward councillor Victor Chamberlain, who has campaigned on protection of LGBT spaces in the borough, alongside fellow ward councillor David Noakes.

“We suggested the Council should agree a memorandum of understanding or put this into any agreements the developer makes with Southwark Council,” he said.

“I’m encouraged the developers have agreed to do so and hope this will ensure our local and diverse LGBTQ+ community can continue to grow and thrive.”

The new space is scheduled to be

delivered by the end of 2022.

The new occupiers of the space will be expected to provide a “safe and inclusive place to meet and socialise,” promote wellbeing and support vulnerable members of the LGBT community.

However, Cllr Chamberlain also urged both town hall and city hall officials to do more to protect LGBT spaces, which have come under threat in recent years.

A report published in 2017 revealed that the capital had lost 58 per cent of its LGBT venues since 2006, having been forced out by spiralling rents.

The Bankside Yards redevelopment will see a mix of shops, offices, housing and venues.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The Black Cultural Archives in Brixton are hosting a free event to help victims of the Windrush scandal navigate the government’s compensation scheme.

The free event, open to all, will give attendees the opportunity to put questions to a panel of specialist immigration lawyers, a Home Office advisor, and politicians.

The archives is also partnering with lawyers to put on a series of free legal advice surgeries to support anyone making compensation applications.

The scandal broke in 2017 after it emerged thousands had been told by the Home Office that they were living illegally in the UK. Many were threatened with deportation, and others forced to leave, despite having lived and worked in the country for decades.

Arike Oke, the Black Cultural Archives’ managing director, said: “We support The Windrush Compensation Scheme but it is difficult to access. “it is causing additional trauma to those already made to suffer by asking them to navigate further unduly onerous and unnecessary amounts of evidence to be granted the compensation they are due.”

In April last year, Hayes criticised the government for its decision to arrange a compensation scheme meeting in Brixton with just a day’s notice, saying there are likely to be many in her Dulwich and West Norwood constituency unaware they are eligible for compensation and in need of independent legal advice with their applications.

The public meeting will be held at 2pm on Saturday, January 18, at Lambeth Town Hall.

Advice surgeries will be held every Wednesday evening from 5-8pm, and

on Saturday mornings from 10am22am, from January 22 to the end of February.

Ms Oke added: “The landing cards that would have led to citizenship being confirmed should have been in our archives.

“For our history and our presence in the UK to be held in such scant regard is shocking.

“We are here to correct those errors in judgment, to correct the emissions and erasures from mainstream history and to reassert that we were here before, we are now and we’ll be here in the future.

“We stand with the people affected by the Windrush scandal in making sure this never happens again, and will be helping them to claim the compensation they are absolutely entitled to as British citizens.”

50 ‘extra care homes’ approved last week

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Fifty “extra care homes” and a state-of-the-art day centre were approved by Southwark Council last week.

The new four-storey building will extend the current Tayo Situ House site on Commercial Way, opened in 2016, to provide more services for older people.

It was part of the original design but after the building it was due to be housed in was found to be structurally unsound it the proposals were put on hold until demolition.

The new plans have now been drawn-

up, including 50 “extra care homes” at social rent, day centre and community hub which will benefit people with dementia and other conditions. There will also be a community garden.

Extra care homes are self-contained flats that allow tenants to live independently in their own homes with care support on site, around the clock.

Johnson Situ, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for growth, development and planning, said the new centre was particularly meaningful to him as the complex is named after his father, a former Mayor of Southwark and Peckham councillor, Tayo Situ, who died in 2011.

“It was a wonderful tribute to have the homes named after our father in the part of the borough that he loved and worked so hard for during his time as a Southwark councillor,” he said.

“It is especially fitting that those original flats and the new proposed ones aren’t just affordable, new council homes, but homes that have a special purpose – to help some of our older residents stay happier and healthier in their own home.

“I am pleased that this legacy is continuing with this fantastic new day centre and community hub that will provide services and help support some of the borough’s older and more vulnerable residents and their families.”

Thirty new trees were planted in the grounds of the Penrose Estate this month.

The saplings were donated by the Woodland Trust, which gives free trees to community groups to help the fight against climate change and increase biodiversity.

The estates’ resident garden club received advice from an arboriculture specialist from Southwark Council on the best places to plant and how to care for the new Hazel, Silver Birch, Crab Apple, Dogwood and Wild Cherry trees.

Patient loses weight and gains a friend with NHS Two women have lost a combined three stone in just 12 weeks and become “life-long friends” and training buddies, thanks to a Guy’s and St Thomas’ weight management programme.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ Local Early Intervention and Prevention Service run 12-week community-based weight management courses in Southwark and Lambeth for people referred by their GP. The weekly classes include diet and nutrition workshops and an hour-long physical activity session with the option of discounted gym membership on completion of the programme. The service has supported around 18,000 people with obesity and other long-term conditions since it began in 2011.

Dawn Robinson-Fennell, 55, from East Dulwich, said: “I was 16 stone and 5 foot 6. The weight had been creeping on for many years as I was doing night work and

it was quicker to get fast food rather than cook a meal.

“The classes with Bobby Ellington, the physical activity specialist at Guy’s and St Thomas’, are excellent. They give the right information so you can make healthy choices and build a foundation for you to work from.

“You learn how to keep a food diary and plan ahead for the food you will eat.

I eat more veg and less of the fatty stuff now. And I’ve found a very good friend in Anne Davis, who also joined the course.

Now we’re training buddies and go to the gym together. If she falls off the wagon, I encourage her to get back on and vice versa.”

Anne Davis, 67, a social worker from Peckham, said: “The classes are great as you are able to talk about why you are over eating, what you can eat in moderation and lots of different exercises like ‘The Plank’.

“I’ve lost about a stone and a half since August and four inches off my waistline – I’ve gone down a dress size! My mood is so much better and I’m not so breathless.”

Catherine Kironde, Early Intervention and Prevention Service manager at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “Some people who join our classes have conditions like diabetes, or issues such as high cholesterol levels. The aim is to keep them well and healthy now so they become more confident in looking after themselves and avoid hospital in the future.”

Obesity is the main cause of type 2 diabetes and the second leading cause of cancers, after smoking.

Nurse and midwife Sickle cell pregnancy study celebrations

A study has been launched at Guy’s and St Thomas’ to see whether regular blood transfusions could help pregnant women who have sickle cell disease.

The World Health Organisation has declared 2020 the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife to mark the bicentenary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.

Women with the inherited blood condition are more likely to have complications during pregnancy.

Vicky Robinson, TAPS2 senior research midwife at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “We’re keen for women with sickle cell disease who are up to 18 weeks pregnant to take part in the study. We are also talking to women who don’t want to take part, to understand the potential barriers to recruitment for this treatment.”

550 years of service Loyal staff who have been working at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust for much of their careers have been recognised at the annual Long Service Awards.

Twenty two members of staff were celebrated at the event, which thanks those who have been part of the Trust for a minimum of 25 years.

Between them, those who picked up awards have clocked up more than 550 years of service.

Clinical and non-clinical staff from across Guy’s and St Thomas’ were recognised – from nurses, occupational therapists and surgeons to housekeeping assistants, admin staff and specialist engineers.

It’s now time to make some real decisions about your future - once you have taken your GCSEs you officially will be an adult, writes Kevin Quinn...

Mum and dad will no longer be responsible for your education, nor will the government; and believe it or not, neither will your teachers.

It will be entirely up to you to decide which path you take - and while everyone including the government is heavily focused on apprenticeships, there will be many of you who will want to follow the traditional academic route. Of course the results you get at secondary school will to a large extent determine what you do in further education. But now is the time to look at what sixth forms and further education institutes are offering.

Unlike secondary school admissions you have the freedom to go where you like - it does not have to be local - but bear in mind journey times. You don’t want to be exhausted before you arrive at college!

Being in the final year of your GCSEs, you will have a fair idea of the results you are likely to achieve and make sure that when you call or visit a sixth form or college you find out the exact qualifications you need to get on the courses that you like the look of.

The truth is, if you are really passionate about a course but feel that you might not get the grades, it would be worth thinking about re-sitting. After spending the whole of your life in school you might think that re-sitting any GCSE would be completely out of the question. However, at your age, making sure that you do something that you feel passionate about and enjoy is absolutely vital.

Countless people have had to work that bit harder and give something a go twice before they succeed. The experience at sixth form or college will be so different to that at school that you should find the change enough to warrant the extra effort and time it takes to re-sit an examine or start a new one to get on to the course you are ultimately after.

The relationship with most of your teachers will be very different, as they will treat you more like an adult. After all you don’t have to be there - it is your choice.

This means that lessons are normally more relaxed and you usually spend more time with smaller groups than you would do at secondary school.

While there is little doubt that A-levels are much harder than GCSEs, the fact that you have fewer subjects and are studying your favourite or best subjects means you will find the self-motivation to get to grips with it.

The work will be much more in depth, but probably more interesting. Essay subjects at A-level are much more about analysis and evaluation than just pure facts. This means that you can no longer get away with having a basic knowledge of a subject and then blagging the exam or just learning reams of facts without actually understanding them.

On the plus side you definitely get more freedom, including free periods

(usually eleven or so hours a week), which allows you to plan when and how you work.

what’s on Back to School is charming experience in Southwark

T

his year marks the 75th anniversary of VE day and Phil Wilmott’s Essential Classics season will be commemorating the occasion while drawing parallels to Britain’s current state of affairs. The season will include works by Lionel Bart and Noel Coward and kicks off with a reworking of Tom Brown’s School Days, writes Rosie O’Connell.

The production is set - contrary to the original book - in the midst of World War 2, with the public school boys of the tale being bred to go on to become leaders in the battle against Nazi Germany. While the timeline is shifted, the majority of the plot points remain true to the text which seems only to highlight the antiquated institutional structures that the upper class, public school is operating within and in turn creating a clear comparison to our most recent General Election.

The set was fantastic, seamlessly and distinctly transitioning from classroom to bedroom to office to staffroom with very few tweaks or additions. It helps the piece to remain very precise and concise which in a small space such as the Union isn’t necessarily the easiest thing to achieve.

The singing throughout, mostly unaccompanied bar some moments with a piano or guitar, was truly standout for me. Performing a series of traditional

songs and hymns, rather than full blown musical numbers, the cast of actormusicians harmonise together beautifully.

The whole 14 strong cast are cohesive and engaging with Hudson Brown’s enthusiastic idyllic Tom Brown and Sam James Page’s assured East standing out.

Ursula Mohan too deserves a mention for her comedic timing as Sally the cook, effortlessly creating a full, likeable character - a real pleasure to watch and laugh alongside.

With the strong message of our country’s deep-rooted, unhealthy perception of class and privilege and in turn power, weaker aspects of the piece become somewhat unimportant. Sure the actual plot may be a little thin on the ground at times, but there is enough good here with casting, music and staging that the modest narrative didn’t end up detracting from the charming experience or elitist implication.

Four centuries of British Surrealism

Dulwich Picture Gallery will present British Surrealism, an ambitious and wide-spanning survey of the origins of surrealist art in Britain, and the first to trace its roots back to 1620 through supporting archive material.

less familiar yet innovative figures will also feature, including Marion Adnams, John Banting, Sam Haile, Conroy Maddox and Grace Pailthorpe - all of whom were united by a motivation to blur the boundaries between reality and dreams.

In the First Manifesto of Surrealism (1924), Breton named 25 poets, novelists and playwrights from the 17th to the 19th centuries who shared and inspired the subversive qualities and absurdities of the movement.

In a playful twist, the exhibition will include works and books by some of these so-called ‘ancestors of surrealism,’ including William Blake, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Henry Fuseli, Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear.

Literary highlights in the exhibition include rare manuscripts such as a notebook containing Coleridge’s 1806 draft of his poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and a playscript for Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto (1859).

The exhibition itself will echo elements of the uncomfortable, rejecting order and chronology to channel the mischief and provocation

of the movement. It will be arranged to reflect the modes and methods of surrealism, with themes of war, dreams, the unconscious, the uncanny, radical politics, sex and desire. The common creative urge between all artists will be highlighted throughout, revealing the power of the subconscious, and the liberation of the imagination.

Jennifer Scott, The Sackler Director of Dulwich Picture Gallery, said: “If you thought surrealism was solely born in France, think again!

There is often something absurd and imaginative within British creativity, from Shakespeare to Lewis Carroll to Henry Moore. Visitors will be invited to embark on their own adventures into the illogical through some spectacular loans and inventive exhibition design; it is not to be missed.”

These concerts will mark the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower leaving Rotherhithe’s shore, captained and crewed by Rotherhithe residents to take persecuted Pilgrims to a new world and a new life in America.

The first show is an evening of flamenco by Cadiz-based singer Leo Power and guitarist Pablo Dominguez.

Flamenco is itself a passionate artistic expression whose origins are thought to have begun in the Punjab from where in the period 800-900 AD there was a large exodus of people, many of them dancers and musicians. Andalucia, southern Spain, centuries later, is where

this gypsy art has evolved into flamenco, with its strong Moorish, Castilian and Sephardic Jewish influences. Cadiz is a port town that has seen centuries of people leaving to go to the Americas, and sometimes returning, bringing new rhythms and instruments.

Last in Rotherhithe two years ago, Leo Power had just been garlanded with “Gaditana del año”, Cadiz Citizen of the Year, for her contribution to the art of flamenco. Pablo Dominguez follows in the footsteps of his father, Chano Dominguez, renowned flamenco pianist. Together they reveal how this mesmerising art is making connections with other World Music genres.

Marking the official centenary of surrealism, when founder André Breton began his experiments in surrealist writing in 1920, it will present a fresh take on this revolutionary movement, through over 70 eclectic works.

British Surrealism will explore the contribution and responses that British artists made to the movement, whether they were involved directly as surrealists, or were significantly influenced by it. Bringing together over 40 artists, including Leonora Carrington, Edward Burra, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Ithell Colquhoun, John Armstrong, Paul Nash and Reuben Mednikoff, the exhibition showcases paintings, sculpture, photography, etchings and prints made between the years 1783 and 1952. The 40 Elephants Gang of female criminals

T

hey ruled parts of London’s criminal underworld for nearly two centuries, were responsible for looting shops of their goods, avoided detection from Scotland Yard – and were all women.

The 40 Elephants Gang most likely got its name from its ringleaders living in Elephant and Castle.

But it has also been suggested that these women criminal masterminds dubbed themselves ‘elephants’ because that’s the appearance their dresses made as they smuggled goods under their dresses.

The gang operated between 1873 to the 1950s, but some mentions of a gang of female shoplifters operating in south London have been found even earlier in police records.

All those who were part of the gang were women. They were working class, allied to the ‘Elephant and Castle mob’, one of the many street gangs rife on London’s streets during the interwar years.

Originally, during the 19th century, the Elephants’ modus operandi was to target wealthy stores in the West End. The social mores of the time allowed women to often escape close scrutiny by shops staff, while the gang cleverly used specially tailored coats, muffs, skirts and hats to disguise goods.

A favourite tactic would be for a small group of girls to enter the shop first, excitedly chatting and trying on new clothes.

As the staff were distracted, a member of the gang would stroll in behind and take whatever they wanted.

Another was ‘the crush.’ A crowd would press around the counter demanding to see goods or makeup.

Handing the goods to the woman next to her, she would then vigorously deny ever touching them – as would the next person and the next, until an accomplice who had been given it would slip out, undetected.

A third involved chewing gum. A group of women would walk around department stores loudly chewing, and ask to see a selection of rings.

They would use the gum to stick one of the rings into a nook or cranny, and then protest their innocence if the shopkeeper noticed the ring missing.

If police arrived, there would be nothing on her.

Eventually, their tactics became known. Panic would erupt if suspected members of the gang were to be seen near to luxury shops in the West End. Media coverage fanned the flames of fear of ‘women shoplifters.’ The 40 Elephants’ response was to branch out, striking farther afield into countryside towns and seaside resorts.

This financial independence also allowed the women to support their spouses – some of whom were also criminals, who had been caught and were languishing inside the prison system.

The 20th century brought a marked change in the tactics used by the gang to avoid detection and capture by the police. It also brought about the Elephants’ heyday during the interwar period.

They invested their ill-gotten gains into automobiles to outrun the police and transport their loot. Members also used the rail network to transfer stolen goods, leaving empty suitcases at rail stations.

During their return trip the suitcase would be filled with the stolen items.

Side-lines were also developed.

“Police forces are set up by governments to stop others getting a share of what they’ve got!”

The gangsters were known to develop fake references as maids and then rob their employers’ houses.

Intimidation and blackmail were another of the Elephants’ favoured tactics, too.

Women would seduce men into love trysts, and then blackmail them with ruining their reputations if they did not meet the gangsters’ demands.

Others who attempted to steal on the Elephants’ turf were brutally beaten if they did not hand over a share of their takings.

At its peak, the Elephants was controlled by the formidable Alice Diamond, known variously as ‘The Queen of the 40 Thieves’ or Diamond Annie.

Born in 1896, Alice began her criminal career aged sixteen, being cautioned for stealing chocolate.

(She was following somewhat in her father’s footsteps, who had convictions for, among other things, smashing the Lord Mayor of London’s head through a glass pane at a meeting.)

She assumed leadership of the gang as the successor to Mary Carr, as the skilful organiser of a series of raids on the West End. Sometimes she even operated in shops she was known to have stolen from, as a decoy.

Staff would be watching this known criminal’s every move, while an accomplice could come in to steal without arousing suspicion.

Strong and nearly 5ft 9in tall, Alice was taller than the average man in early 20th century London. It had taken three policemen to hold her down during her first arrest.

She scrapped using a steel blackjack, and would use diamonds

as knuckledusters in brawls. She was also political.

When one Magistrate during a sentencing asked Diamond why she did not like police officers, she reportedly responded: “Police forces are set up by governments to stop others getting a share of what they’ve got!”

The legacy of the 40 Elephants, which ceased operation during the 1950s, is alluded to in a new hotel opened in the site of the former Met Police HQ. The Great Scotland Yard hotel, which opened last month, has a bar called the 40 Elephants. A picture of the ‘bob-haired bandit’ Lillion Rose Goldstein, another high-ranking gang member, is above the fireplace.

A cocktail, dedicated to gang member Mary Carr, is topped with a black feather – a tribute to the times she appeared in court wearing feather dresses. Waiters in the restaurant are also reported to carry decorative bronze knuckledusters in a nod to Alice Diamond.

The 40 Elephants may have ceased striking terror with their shoplifting exploits – but it seems this all-girl gang of master criminals are still making their mark.

Peckham’s Garton, 32, is planning to retire this year but first wants to “correct a few wrongs”.

One of his ambitions is a rematch with Chris Jenkins, who took the British welter-weight title off ‘The Pexican’ with a unanimous points decision last March.

Garton also wants to maximise his earning potential in 2020, and is desperate for a showdown with 23-year-old WBA Continental welterweight champion Benn.

“I hope so, we want to fight each other but boxing comes down to money,” Garton told Queensbury Promotions. “It’s my last year and I want to make some money out of it.

“The money I got offered from Hearn wasn’t good enough to pay the bills. I want more money.

“I want two or three fights this year.

I’ve had a great career, but I’d like the Jenkins fight as well. I’d like to correct a few wrongs and go from there.

“Conor Benn and Hearn keep calling me out and they’re starting to irritate me. I definitely want that fight but I want to make some money out of it, I ain’t taking it earning no money.

“It would be a cracking fight. I don’t see it going to points, it would be a stoppage – and I think my hand would

avenge the Jenkins defeat.

He continued: “Chris Jenkins I think was the first person to beat me in five or six years so he left a bitter taste, took my belt off me. I’d love that rematch to try and get my belt back.

Ajay Ashanike’s side got off to an ideal start when Oneal Rowe gave them the lead in the eleventh minute.

But it quickly went downhill from there in front of 148 fans in Rotherhithe.

“The last year or so my missus and everyone has said, ‘you’ve got to think about it now’. I wasn’t happy with my performance against Chris and I just want my last run and I’ll call it quits.”

Asked what would be the ideal 2020, Garton said: “Getting the British and Commonwealth title off Jenkins and knocking Conor Benn out – and hopefully someone else.”

The visitors were back level through Connor Heffernan in the 22nd minute and just a minute later Callum McGeehan put his side in front.

Hollands made it 3-1 two minutes before half-time as Ben Brown fired in, before Ricky Freeman put the contest well out of the Fish’s reach with a goal in the 65th minute.

Fisher are fifteenth in the table with eighteen points from eighteen games.

They are at St Paul’s again this Saturday for the visit of Erith Town.

SECFL First division result Sutton 2-0 Stansfeld

Stansfeld stopped in their tracks STANSFELD’S RECENT good run of results came to an end last Saturday, when they went down 2-0 away to Sutton.

Stansfeld had been hoping to build on the form that had lifted them to sixth in the SCEFL First Division table.

In a dull and scrappy first half there were only a few chances created, but Sutton took theirs.

The home side went in front in the 27th minute when goalkeeper Charlie Cottrell and defender Joe Borland collided and the ball fell to Arlie Desanges who rolled the ball into an empty net from twelve yards.

The Stansfeld players were adamant they should have had a penalty just before half-time when Billy Shinners was bundled over in the box from a corner, but the referee waved play-on.

Sutton took their lead into the break as Stansfeld struggled to get going.

The away side came out in the second half much brighter and were camped in Sutton’s half for long periods but failed to make any clear-cut chance.

Stansfeld nearly got the equaliser when another corner wasn’t dealt with but the Sutton defence managed to scramble the ball off the line.

Stansfeld had another chance to level after Freddie Cray had been fouled just outside the box, but Joe Minter’s freekick narrowly missed the target with the goalkeeper beaten.

With Stansfeld pressing for that elusive goal and playing five up front, Sutton took advantage on the counterattack in the last minute and Joby Smith rounded off the move to make sure of three points for his side.

Stansfeld dropped to seventh in the table.

Meanwhile, Stansfeld Reserves were held to 3-3 draw away to Fleetdown United with the goals coming from Rob Hughes, Billy Jolley and Mike Mckenna.

AFTER A season-high in his last outing, Donique Downer continued his impressive form by going one better, scoring sixteen points on his way to leading Southwark Legends to a victory over their south London rivals Lewisham Thunder.

The game was open from the start as both side were unable to stop each other’s offence, going basket for basket

to the delight of the spectators.

However, the Legends got the better of the home team and took the first quarter 25-20.

It was a different story in the second quarter. The Legends put on a team defensive clinic by only allowing four points against them while scoring sixteen of their own.

That was mainly thanks to the inside

presence of 6’8” forward Luke Bamgboye and third-year wing Joel Chigbo having active hands on the perimeter and forcing turnovers.

It was a similar story in the third quarter as Southwark edged it 11-5.

They also went ahead to win the fourth quarter 20-11. The game finished 72-43 as the Legends extended their winning streak to four.

The Legends’ next home game will see the under-18s welcome Greenwich Titans to the Damilola Taylor Centre on January 18. Tip-off is at 11am and doors are open from 10am. All are welcomed to come and support the team.

Speaking after the talk, Mills said: “My aim is to inspire and motivate young people aspiring to become professional footballers through my experiences and journey and show them the reality of how their journey could be.

Lionel Ainsworth gave the Hamlet a sixteenth-minute lead at the Bob Lucas Stadium before Jake McCarthy levelled two minutes before the half-time break, the first goal conceded by Gavin Rose’s side this year.

Ainsworth – who had scored for Weymouth against Dulwich in a 2-2 draw at Champion Hill in October – took advantage to put the visitors ahead after Jeffrey Monakana’s effort had hit the woodwork.

McCarthy equalised in the 43rd minute with a 25-yard shot that beat Hamlet goalkeeper Charlie Grainger.

Ainsworth and Monakana missed good chances after the break and play was waved on after Dulwich’s Aaron Barnes appeared to be fouled in the penalty area.

With seven minutes left Dulwich had an opportunity to take all three points but Quade Taylor over-hit a pass which would have put Ainsworth through on goal. Ainsworth retrieved possession

before crossing but substitute Nyren Clunis’ attempt from inside the sixyard box was saved by goalkeeper Mark Childs.

Hamlet striker Danny Mills had one more effort but headed over the crossbar in the last minute.

The result leaves the Hamlet fifteenth in National League South, six points above the bottom two relegation places.

Mills recalled his footballing journey, of coming through the youth system at Croydon FC and moving to Conference side Crawley Town before signing his first professional contract with Peterborough United.

It was a chance to speak to the students about the highs and lows of football and the importance of focusing on yourself, free from distractions.

Since joining Dulwich Hamlet last summer, Mills has also been taking his coaching qualifications and is assistant manager of the club’s under-18 side alongside Junior James.

He is a firm believer in continuing his personal development throughout his career and he has recently passed his UEFA B licence and is now aiming to progress on to the A Licence.

“Surrey CCC members also benefit from reciprocal rights with New South Wales, the state side based at the Sydney Cricket Ground.”

England and Australia most recently met just four months ago, in the final Ashes Test of the 2019 series.

Richard Thompson, Surrey CCC Chairman, added: “The images of the suffering and devastation being wrought by the fires that have been beamed across the globe are utterly heart breaking.

“Surrey CCC has many great friends in Australia – and often send our young players to develop their games in the country during the English winter. This

donation is a tiny token of our appreciation for all the work being done to save lives and limit the damage caused by this tragedy.

“We hope next month’s game is a huge success and this wonderful country is able to do everything possible to right itself and help those effected by these fires.”

Meanwhile, the club have also announced that conferences and events at The Kia Oval will be reusing all water bottles after the installation of taps in suites across the 1845 Stand.

Surrey said: “Although the ground has not offered single-use plastic water bottles for a number of years, conferences were previously served by large collective glass bottles that were disposed of in recycling after each event.

“From 2020 onwards, the club will

simply fill glass bottles with the highquality filtered water and then go on to wash and reuse every bottle. The system is not dissimilar to that used for serving alcoholic drinks during matches, where every drink is poured into a cup that is then washed and reused.

“The 1845 Stand is the new name for what was previously known as the OCS Stand. It has been renamed after the year of Surrey County Cricket Club’s foundation in honour of 2020 being the club’s 175th anniversary year.

“The new policy is part of the club’s continued drive to reduce the environmental impact of The Kia Oval – with further new policies due to be announced in the run-up to the 2020 summer of cricket.”

This week Jed Wallace was nominated for goal of the month in the Championship for his free-kick against Cardiff. Oh for some of that kind of magic to have livened up this turgid contest.

This looked like a 0-0 draw from a long way out.

None of the creative players on the pitch performed.

Wallace was unusually quiet but perhaps that’s not a surprise. He expends more energy in games than just about any other Championship player so after the busy Christmas period it followed that he wouldn’t be at his usual high level.

More disappointing was the performance of Connor Mahoney. In the previous two home games he had shown his talent, his ability to influence games and make decisive contributions. But on Saturday he struggled to impose himself on the contest and it was difficult to recall any impact in the opening 40 minutes.

His performances against Luton and Newport looked like they could be a turning point in his Millwall career. But this was two steps back and if it seems like it’s harsh to pick him out, it’s only because it’s obvious there’s such ability there but Mahoney hasn’t yet shown it consistently.

This was a game that Stoke shaded, and they had the best chances. James McClean was, predictably, booed whenever he was on the ball. He had a chance to silence the away fans in the second half when Sam

Shaun Williams Vokes’ header parted the away defence.

McClean had a clear sight of goal in a central position fifteen yards out but shanked his effort, to the delight of the 1,007 Lions supporters in the stand in front of him.

Stoke fans had their own chant for their former boss. “Gary Rowett, your football is s**t”, they sang to try to get under the skin of the man who was sacked by the Potters in January 2019. Rowett was asked afterwards if he had enjoyed his return and he said: “I thought the fans were quite good, they weren’t too bad. I thought they actually sang it less than when I was the manager here, so I was quite pleased with that one!”

It’s now four games unbeaten against sides he has managed for Rowett, three of them away from home.

He had Jake Cooper to thank for preserving his side’s clean sheet by clearing Tyrese Campbell’s header off the line.

Millwall created some half-chances. Jack Butland was tested by Tom Bradshaw and Mahlon Romeo in the first half but the saves were as comfortable as you’d expect from an England international.

Neither goalkeeper was really properly stretched. Wallace’s attempt to lob Butland straight from the second-half kick-off was almost an admission that the creative playbooks from both sides had been left behind.

(The effort sailed well over the crossbar, by the way.)

In their most recent away fixtures, at

Derby and Bristol City, Millwall had been such a threat on the counter-attack. But they couldn’t find that rhythm last Saturday.

Stoke have improved under Michael O’Neill, who took over from Nathan Jones after the latter was sacked following their 2-0 defeat at The Den in Rowett’s first game in charge. Stoke had scored three and five goals against Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield so the fact Millwall limited them to just one shot on target last weekend was impressive.

The Lions have lost just two league games in their last fifteen, which over that period puts them sixth in the form table.

That’s even more impressive considering they have been deprived of midfielders Ben Thompson and Ryan Leonard, and a small squad means little break for those that need it.

Shaun Williams was also facing a ban after his straight red for a late tackle on Liam Lindsay in the 85th minute. It was more clumsy than malicious though the argument could be made that Williams did endanger his opponent. In that case intent is irrelevant. Williams’ arm was slightly raised and the collision sent Lindsay dangerously thudding into the ground.

Millwall can’t afford to lose players, particularly in midfield. It would be a pity were an unexpected play-off drive to be derailed by injuries and suspensions.

But there is a long way to go, nineteen games, and the Lions face a potentially decisive February when they play seven league fixtures. An FA Cup fourth-round win over Sheffield United would further cram the schedule.

Saturday will be quickly forgotten, but the point could be crucial in such a tight promotion race.

Keeper exactly where he wants to be as he explains why Millwall is perfect for him

exclusive John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BART BIALKOWSKI insisted he never wanted to leave Millwall – and identified goalkeeping coach Lee Turner as one of the main reasons he feels so settled at the club.

Bialkowski, 32, signed on a seasonlong loan from Ipswich last summer but the League One club had the option to accept bids for him earlier this month.

Former Southampton goalkeeper Bialkowski dismissed the notion that clause was a distraction, because even if Ipswich had received an offer they deemed suitable the ultimate decision was his.

That deadline has now passed, and Bialkowski will be at Millwall until at least the end of this season.

He has been one of the top keepers in the Championship this campaign.

In statistics until December 31, only Charlton goalkeeper Dillon Phillips (87) had made more saves in the league than Bialkowski (83).

Bialkowski is settled in south London, and had his kids at the training ground over Christmas.

Professionally, Turner has made a big impact on him, and he never had any doubt he would stay at the club this month.

“It’s gone so I’m here until at least the end of the season. I’m very happy about

it and I can fully concentrate on going forward,” Bialkowski said.

“Then again [if Ipswich had accepted a bid from another club] I wouldn’t have had to necessarily accept anything.

They could have accepted something but it’s always down to me if I want to go somewhere else.

“I didn’t. I didn’t want to go somewhere else. Everything is great here. The training sessions, the atmosphere in the changing room, the fans. They’re always the key factors for a new player.

“Probably the main thing is training with LT. He just understands the game.

We work on things during the week before the game, specific things that he thinks the opposition team might do.

“We try to replicate the opportunities that the opposition might have. He works hard and is a truly good goalie coach.

“He’s the best I’ve seen the way he hits the ball, how hard he hits it and the movement of the ball. It’s probably the same as any outfield player would shoot.

“When you work on those things in training then you’re going into the game confident that you’ve faced these kinds of shots hundreds and hundreds of times during the week.

“You’re confident then that you’ve got a good chance to make saves in games.

“You’re always trying to improve on every single thing, I’m always open to learning new things. When you get

older you’ve got some habits that are difficult to change, but hopefully I’m learning.”

Bialkowski is set to face new competition for his No.1 spot. Frank Fielding began the season as Neil Harris’ first-choice stopper before getting injured on the opening day against Preston.

Fielding is nearing a return to the squad, and could even be involved when Reading visit The Den this Saturday.

Bialkowski said: “There’s competition for every other place in the team.

Competition is healthy. Frank is a great guy, a great character and goalie.

“At the moment I’m playing well and it’s down to me to keep the shirt.”

There was a moment in the 0-0 draw at Stoke last weekend that reminded of the mistake against QPR last September when Bialkowski fluffed a pass towards Jake Cooper and Nakhi Wells intercepted to run through and score the winner.

Bialkowski was in an eerily similar situation last weekend, but this time the result was different as he raced outside his box before cushioning a pass to Cooper and the danger was averted.

The News asked Bialkowski if he had any nightmare visions as Sam Vokes closed in on him.

He said: “Not really at the time, you don’t think that. It was so windy I thought the ball was going to come to me and I could collect it. But then

the wind held it up and I had to do something.

“I saw Jake and Muzza [Murray Wallace] on that side and I decided to pass it to them. I know what you’re trying to say! Afterwards I thought about it but at the time everything is happening so fast you don’t think about it.”

Bialkowski has kept eight clean sheets this season, three in his last four games and three in the last six away from home.

He said his only aim this season was based on playing time.

“I didn’t really have any targets, only to play as many games as I could. It’s the best thing for a goalie and defenders to keep clean sheets,” Bialkowski continued.

“The last game was a tough one for us especially when you take the conditions into consideration. It was probably the toughest game so far, mentally.

“Afterwards we were just pleased with a clean sheet and point. We feel confident. Recently we haven’t conceded many goals, we don’t even concede many chances for the opposition to score.

“I was speaking to the goalie coach LT this week about teams playing through us. I can’t remember the last time any team played through us and I had a save to make one-v-one.

“We’re solid at the back. And not only at the back, as a team we have

good shape and as soon as we lose the ball we get back into our shape and make it so hard for teams to create chances against us.”

Bialkowski had little to do at Stoke, and he revealed he talks to himself during games to focus his mind.

“For a goalie when you don’t have much to do you always try to talk to other players, even to yourself sometimes when you’re not involved that much. That’s the thing that keeps me focused, talking to players keeps me concentrated on the game.

“As a defender and goalkeeper you always try to be vocal to help your team-mates because you can see almost everything on the pitch.”

There is only one negative in Bialkowski’s season. He told the News late last year he hoped to be playing well enough to have a chance of being named in Jerzy Brzęczek’s Poland’s squad for Euro 2020.

But that situation appears to have changed.

Bialkowski explained: “The manager of the Poland team probably has different ideas. I’m playing well so you would think he might try and give me a call or something.

“I’m quite easy about that, I can understand the position. The other goalies are playing in the top leagues in Europe so it’s out of my hands.

“All I can do is concentrate on my football, that’s it. I’m not thinking about anything else.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JED WALLACE has given an interesting insight into the different types of leaders past and present at Millwall – and the “characters that run the dressing room”.

Wallace explained there are groups of players that set examples at the club, from Alex Pearce at the top of the chain to a middle band and then younger players he praised as having great attitudes and who follow the lead of the more senior professionals.

Wallace is a big admirer of Steve Morison for how the former Lions captain sought to ease pressure on others by attracting it on himself.

Shaun Hutchinson and another former Lions skipper, Tony Craig, are similar in their approaches, according to Wallace.

Jayson Molumby recently revealed Wallace can be forthright in sharing his views. Wallace remembers the first real dressing-down he received as a young player. It came at Portsmouth from a veteran who went on to coach at Millwall under Neil Harris.

“I remember it well, very well,” Wallace recalled this week, smiling. “David Connolly.

I took a free-kick against Accrington. Dave wanted to take it. I hit it about 30 yards over the bar and got put firmly back in my box at half-time.

“He was an intense character, a leader in his own right. He was 36 years old and had the lowest body fat at the club, winning all the running. He set the bar.

“The most important part of any football club is what the fans don’t see. It’s the Tuesday afternoon training, the Thursday morning, then the match-day takes care of itself. If you look in the gym now Coops [Jake Cooper] will be there, Murray Wallace, at a quarter past eight in the morning.

“When training gets a little bit sloppy there are four or five of us who will pick things up.

That’s what makes a successful changing room. We’ve got that in abundance, though probably need a little bit more experience in one or two areas. But with the young players coming through it’s exciting times.

“Moro was a hard person to play with because he’s got high standards. Different to a Tony Craig. You’ve got two types of leader in football. You’ve got people like your Hutcheys, your Tony Craigs where they look after themselves and set their own bar. They do everything right and if you follow them you’ll be in good stead.

“Then you’ve got the likes of Pearcey, [current Lions coach and former Portsmouth player] Paul Robinson who

demand it from other people.

“Moro was an interesting one because he took all the pressure on himself, which helped a lot of the players. That worked for Moro and against him because when we didn’t win it would be Moro’s fault. He’s been the iconic Millwall player of the last generation.

“He took a lot or pressure on himself which is why in the big moments he turned up, because he thrived off that pressure. Moro had real mental toughness when it wasn’t going well. He’d be doubted but he’d come back and that’s what made him such a good player, even at the age of 34 or 35.

“Willo [Shaun Williams] is another [leader]. He keeps himself to himself but does it right day-in, day-out and someone like Molumby will look at him and think he needs to do the same. It’s a knock-on effect.

“I think we have a great middle group: myself, Bradders [Tom Bradshaw], Coops, Muzza. We have a group that will drive the club forward. That’s the most important part of any football club, the changing room dynamic, and we’ve got that.

“Some clubs I’ve been at the manager has to be involved. Here the manager doesn’t need to ever be involved in our changing room because we have big characters that run the changing room.

And credit goes to Neil for getting those people through the door.

“Paul Robinson, Ben Chorley, Nicky Shorey, I’ve played with good pros. It’s been a shift in mentality certainly since Pearcey walked through the door. The gaffer knew Pearcey from Derby, he sets the tone then it filters down through Pearcey, down to the likes of me, Willo and we look to drive the group on.

“Then Molumby, Thommo [Ben Thompson], Billy Mitchell, their attitude is second to none. The togetherness that we do have can take you a long way. With a little sprinkling of quality in a tight division, it could stand us in good stead with the togetherness that we’ve got.”

Wallace was nominated for Championship player of the month and goal of the month for December.

He believes strong individual performances are only possible if you have a united squad.

“Last year I realised more than any other year that when the changing room is successful the individual will be successful as well,” Wallace said. “The year we finished eighth a lot of individuals got praised. This year we’re doing well so a lot of people are going to get praised as well.

“I’ve had that [nomination] a couple of months in a row, I’ve been consistent in my performances. I keep chipping away

when I’m not playing well and we still manage to pick up results. It shows how much of a good team we do look at the moment.

“When you’re scoring you feel like you can score in every game, when you’re not winning you’re wondering where the next win is going to come from.

“I think the most important thing at the moment is that I don’t see us losing many, touch wood. It’s down to us on the day to show that bit of quality that we didn’t show at the weekend [at Stoke] to be able to score. We’ve always been a hard team to beat but sometimes we’ve beaten ourselves by not showing that quality to win games.

“We’ve managed to turn a lot of draws into wins. The Luton game [on New Year’s Day], I had genuine belief for the first time in a long time that we would win the game. Even when we were 1-0 down I fully believed we would go on and win comfortably. The manager stressed that to us at half-time.

“He’s been a breath of fresh air. The way we’re looking to play suits me now, suits a lot of the players. The likes of Coops, Willo, people have improved so much. Training is improving all the time and I think moving forward with the manager we’ve got now we’re going to be a good team at this level for a long time to come.”

The Royals are one of only two sides to defeat the Lions in the last fifteen league games – Barnsley the other – and only West Brom have lost fewer

Millwall will be without the suspended Shaun Williams games than Millwall this season.

Lions boss Gary Rowett is considering whether to play a fourman or a five-man defence against the Royals.

The Lions have lined up in a 5-2-3 formation in their last six away games when they have been unbeaten and conceded just three goals.

Rowett started with five at the back

in the last home league game against Luton but withdrew Alex Pearce three minutes before the break with the side 1-0 down, before a second-half fightback secured a 3-1 win.

Meanwhile, Aiden O’Brien returned to training on Monday after missing the 0-0 draw at Stoke last Saturday with an ankle injury.

Ben Thompson is out, along with

while Rowett hasn’t been able to rest players given the lack of options in certain positions.

Other players haven’t made the desired impact this season and could be moved on this month or in the summer. Tom Elliott has already been shipped off to Salford after the club agreed to end his contract six months early.

The pool of free transfers is smaller at this time of the season. There are some renowned names who are currently free agents, including former Lions winger Ben Marshall, former Stoke midfielder and Ireland international Glenn Whelan and exBlackburn left-back Martin Olsson.

Rowett explained the club’s thinking on the free and loan markets.

“We always have a list of players that are free transfers,” Rowett said. “When I was at Derby we took Joe Ledley and he did a

fantastic job. I think we lost one game in 20 after Joe came in.

“It’s a market where if you can’t get someone in the January window then you start to look at players who are out of contract afterwards because that’s all you can do. I don’t think we’re too specific in it.

It’s difficult when you take a loan, because you want the option in there that you can take them permanently if they do well.

“You want someone who’s a long-term option for you, but occasionally the team needs a short-term fix. And that’s where the loan market’s great.

“You can get someone in for three or four months that can keep us in the race and competitive. We might need to bring someone in who we might not necessarily look to sign long term. There are so many different opportunities to do so many different things.”

Millwall could look in bargain bin for players

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT said Millwall could utilise the free-transfer market if they need reinforcements this season.

Rowett pointed to Wales international Joe Ledley as an example of a player who could provide value in that market. Rowett signed Ledley on a free transfer for Derby in September 2017 after the midfielder had left Crystal Palace.

Millwall want to add a midfielder to their squad, as well as, ideally, a left-sided player and another attacker. There is a sense that the Lions could make a play-off push with some astute January acquisitions.

A relatively small squad for the Championship has been stretched by injuries and suspensions. Millwall are down to the bare bones in central midfield,

Ryan Leonard, who has started doing running exercises as he recovers from knee and hamstring problems.

Billy Mitchell is set to replace the suspended Shaun Williams in midfield.

Frank Fielding could be in the matchday squad for the first time since the opening day of the season after he played against Charlton under-23s

on Monday. Back-up stopper Luke Steele’s return to Nottingham Forest is imminent after his loan spell.

Rowett was full of praise for Steele.

“I’m not sure on the exact date, I think it might be after Reading,” Rowett said. “Steeley’s been great, he’s a brilliant, brilliant character and his performances in training have been absolutely fantastic.

“Because he wants to play football, if he goes out on loan somewhere else then someone’s going to get a topdrawer character and goalkeeper.

“But he’s not our player, he wants to go and play, so our priority has to lie with Frank. When we feel Frank’s fully fit, and I’ll speak to LT [goalkeeping coach Lee Turner] about it this week, there’s then the debate about whether he goes on to the bench for Saturday’s game.

“We’ll have a discussion and that will be based on how he got through the game and how he felt.”

Reading have enjoyed just as impressive a resurgence under Mark Bowen as Millwall under Rowett.

When Bowen was appointed manager – following his role as sporting director – on October 14 Reading were 22nd after just one point from their pervious six games.

Reading have lost just three times in their last fifteen Championship fixtures and are on a seven-game unbeaten run after last Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Nottingham Forest.

In a crowded mid-table to the playoffs the Royals are in fourteenth place but just six points off sixth.

Reading and Millwall are fifth and sixth in the form table over the last fifteen games, the Royals having picked up 28 points to the Lions’ 27.

Bowen’s side have scored 23 goals to Millwall’s 22 in those games, and conceded just twelve to Rowett’s side’s fifteen.

exclusive John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL ARE working hard to boost their squad before facing Reading – as boss Gary Rowett revealed Shane Ferguson could be an option in central midfield.

The Lions want to sign a midfielder with Shaun Williams suspended, and Ben Thompson and Ryan Thompson injured.

At the time we were going to press, Millwall had just Billy Mitchell (18) and Jayson Molumby (20) as options to start in midfield against the Royals.

Mitchell has yet to start a league game, but Rowett is a big admirer of the player. However, the Lions boss stressed that he doesn’t want to put too much pressure on the youngster and acknowledged that the club are too light in that area.

“You never want to leave yourself with only two midfielders, so the first thing is obviously we’re working hard to see if we can get the right type of midfielder into the building,” Rowett said.

“That’s no slight on Jayson and Billy.

If I felt as though we could guarantee that they stay fit then it might be that we give Billy his opportunity. But it’s always a difficult one to pin too many hopes on someone who hasn’t played that much first-team football.

“We want to try and get another body in there. But out of all the players we’ve got Fergie’s the one, because he’s so versatile, who could 100 per cent play in a three-man midfield. It actually

in some ways might suit him better because he always plays in off the line a little bit.

“He’s such a good footballer and such an intelligent player, I’ve got no doubt he could play in a two-man midfield.

He’s experienced enough, but the fact he hasn’t played loads of games in there means it’s a little bit of a risk.

“If we get to Saturday and we’ve got what we’ve got then I’ll have to make a decision based on what I think the best team is and what the best way forward is.

“Hopefully we won’t get to that point, but we’re working hard to see if we can get someone in. We were anyway but after last weekend the process accelerates.

“If we don’t, then I’m comfortable going with what I think is the best option we have. I rate young Billy, he did well against Newport. At the same time we don’t want to pin all our hopes on Billy to come in and play four, five, six games for us when it’s at a big stage of the season.”

Bart wants permanent Lions transfer switch exclusive John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BART BIALKOWSKI has revealed that he would like to sign for Millwall on a permanent deal from Ipswich Town.

Bialkowski, who will turn 33 in July, is on a season-long loan at Millwall and has established himself as a popular firstchoice goalkeeper.

Poland international Bialkowski is fully settled at the club and is likely to leave Ipswich in the summer.

Bialkowski is contracted to the Tractor Boys until 2021. Millwall agreed a £900,000 fee with the League One club for Bialkowski las summer before an injury issue was flagged up in the medical.

But former Lions boss Neil Harris was determined to land the stopper and the clubs renegotiated the new terms of a loan.

Bialkowski has made some spectacular saves this season, and has kept eight clean sheets in all competitions, six of them since Gary Rowett replaced Neil Harris in October.

Rowett has already said he hopes the club can sign Bialkowski on a permanent deal. Ipswich are strong contenders for promotion back to the Championship this season.

But the News asked Bialkowski this week whether he would like a full-time switch to south London.

Bialkowski responded: “Absolutely, yeah. I’ve said I’m enjoying it and when you’re enjoying something it’s so much easier to make a decision.

“Obviously it’s not down to me. There are three parties involved in the situation.

For me I can say I would be very happy if I signed here on a permanent deal.”
