Coyle believes the party’s next leader shouldn’t be a Corbynite as a “clean break is needed” to get the electorate back on side.

Phillips, the Birmingham Yardley Labour MP since 2015, announced she had entered the race at the weekend.

Starmer is widely considered to be the current favourite, with Rebecca Long-Bailey, Lisa Nandy, Clive Lewis and Emily Thornberry also throwing their hats into the ring Speaking on Thursday last week Coyle said:

“The question for Labour members is, do we want to win the next election? And do we actually want to have the chance to turn around some of what the Tories have been doing.

“Or do we continue to want to just put up more placards and get on another protest?

That’s the question for Labour members.”

He added: “I think Jess Phillips or another candidate – there will be others to come forward I’m sure – will give us a better chance to do that than someone who has been part of the shadow cabinet around Jeremy Corbyn and his leadership team.”

At the time of going to press neither Harriet Harman or Helen Hayes had made public their opinions on who should be the next leader of the Labour Party.

Coyle has been a vocal critic of Corbyn since quitting his shadow cabinet and has continued to lobby him to step down as leader sooner rather than later after Labour’s disastrous election performance last month.

“We would be better able to resist Johnson if Corbyn hadn’t just reduced our representation to the lowest levels since before the French resistance existed,” he replied.

“If Corbyn had resisted antisemitism with any energy we may also have done better.

“If his team hadn’t ignored 100,000 members leaving we may have been better able to resist the Tories in the election.

“If Corbyn’s advisors had acted sooner perhaps the split in the party, with over a dozen MPs quitting, might have been prevented.

“We are barely a resistance the longer Corbyn continues.

“New leadership must end this middle class affectation with protest and rebuild a party able to get back in government and transform people’s lives.”

The Camberwell and Peckhaam MP was among the signatories of a petition demanding that the woman was brought back to the UK and criminal charges dropped.

The nineteen-year-old had been found guilty of “public mischief” by a judge after being accused of lying about the attack on July 17 last year.

The victim said up to twelve Israelis gangraped her in an Ayia Napa hotel room, but later retracted her statement, potentially leading to years behind bars. Concerns had been raised over the trial, evidence, and way the case had

been handled.

Her lawyers say police forced her to sign the retraction, and claim she was interviewed without a lawyer present for hours. She has also been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

In a statement released before the pardon, the victim said: “I would say to both the foreign secretary and prime minister, both of whom are fathers, please support me with your actions, not just with your words.

“Time is running out for me. Please, please help.”

Campaigners and a petition to Boris Johnson signed by Harman called on the British government directly to intervene and push Cyprus to release her from detention and stop criminal proceedings.

On Tuesday a judge handed her a four-month suspended sentence and 140 euro fine – giving her leave to return home.

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The winner of an international competition to redevelop the ‘Low Line’ railway viaducts through Bankside, Bermondsey and London Bridge has been announced.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Some of the first arrivals of the new decade were born at St Thomas’ Hospital on New Year’s Day, including one boy whose mum started having contractions at the countdown to midnight.

Twenty babies were born on New Year’s Eve and seventeen came into the world on New Year’s Day, while the rest of us were ringing in the 2020s.

Staff worked tirelessly to deliver the babies at the hospital overlooking the London Eye and annual New Year’s fireworks display.

Eight boys and nine girls were welcomed to the world between 1.54 am and 11.42pm.

One of the newborns was Finlay, who arrived at 10.42am weighting 6lb and 6oz, to first time parents Yubing Zhu and Kenneth Ho, from Tower Hamlets.

His mum said: “We were at a New Year’s Eve party and at 11pm I knew he was coming but I wanted to stay for the countdown.

“I was having contractions while Craig David was playing but I danced through them – it was nice to be distracted.”

The 31-year-old added: “It went as smooth as can be.

“We used the techniques we had learnt through hypnobirthing at home and got to the hospital at 8.30am.

“I went into the birthing pool and had paracetamol and gas and air, and two hours later he arrived.”

His father Kenneth added: “I was so glad that Finlay waited until New Year’s Day to arrive because all the roads were blocked and there was lots of traffic the night before due to the fireworks.

“It’s been an amazing start to the year.”

Around 6,500 babies are born at the trust every year.

The winning concept, Low Line Commons, will see new green infrastructure on and around the viaducts including community gardens, tree planting and wildlife habitats.

Low Line Commons was developed by PDP Architects. Pedro Roos, a partner at the firm, said: ‘We are delighted to have been announced as the winners of the competition.

“We look forward to working with the client team in developing the Low Line as a robust piece of infrastructure for London that creatively tackles the current environmental, economic and social challenges head-on.”

The call for design entries was met by 82 applicants since its launch in July last year. “We were very pleased to see so many entries to the competition, both locally and internationally,” said Donald Hyslop, Chair of Better Bankside.

“The Low Line will become an important part of some of London’s most vibrant communities and neighbourhoods.”

Locations on the railway viaducts and archways have previously been given dedicated music tracks, in a bid to encourage people to walk along the route.

The tracks could only be heard by visiting each of the sites in person, including well-known locations such as the Shard and Borough Market, as well as Ewer Street, close to the Tate Modern.

George turns 100 and his marriage is going strong after an amazing 67 years

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The secret to a long life is always taking your tablets – according to a Bermondsey man who has recently celebrated his 100th birthday.

George Filkins, who has lived in Bermondsey all his life, celebrated the milestone on December 21st at the Dickens Inn, alongside his wife of 67 years, Betty, and family and friends.

So what’s the secret to a long life? “All the tablets I’m taking,” laughs the greatgrandfather. “I’ve got a pacemaker as well.

“I don’t take too many liberties with myself these days. I used to drink, but not so much now.”

He started off his career as a page boy for the RAC in Pall Mall, he says, before joining the Army at the outbreak of WW2.

Then he opened a shop on the corner of Monnow Road, near to where he was born and grew up.

“It wasn’t very successful,” he laughs. “It didn’t really work out because of rationing.”

He took a different tack by working in the docks for two decades, and eventually leaving the docks to work as a messenger for a stockbroker in the city, before rising to head of department. He retired when he was 78.

There’s been a tremendous amount of change in Bermondsey over the past century, says George, who has two sons, four grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

“I think it was a much closer-knit community when I was a kid,” he said.

“Around the church [St James], everything happened around the church. There was a woman there, I think they called her the grey lady because of the uniform. She ran it, and everything went on around there – it was a different atmosphere then, even in hard times.

“The Blue, all of that was a busy market, all the side streets they had stalls too. It was a sort of a night out if you went down there because all the shops were open quite late.”

‘Teenage boy’ stabbed near Kennington tube

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk A teenage boy is believed to be fighting for his life after a stabbing in Kennington on Tuesday evening.

Police have imposed a section 60 within the area to allow them additional stop and search powers after the incident at around 5pm on January 7.

Officers were called to reports of a male found with stab injuries on De Laune Street, SE17, near Kennington Underground Station and rushed the victim to hospital.

A police spokesperson told the News: “A male believed to be in his teens was found with stab injuries. He was treated at the scene by the London Ambulance Service and conveyed to a South London hospital. We await an update on his condition at this time.

“At this early stage in the investigation, no arrests have been made. Officers from Central South CID are investigating and enquiries continue” They confirmed that the section 60 order was expected to be in operation until 4am the following morning.

Bermondsey brewery criticised over Two police officers are beer branding ‘appealing to children’ injured during night-time

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey brewery has been criticised by an industry regulator over a beer dubbed particularly appealing to children, even though the watchdog did make clear it had not breached the code on communicating that its beer was alcoholic.

A lesser complaint was upheld against Fourpure, a brewery based on Rotherhithe New Road, over the branding of its ‘Juicebox’ beer.

Officials at the Portman Group – the industry watchdog ¬- raised concerns that the Citrus IPA could be easily mistaken by children as an orange juice or a can of pop.

In considering the complaint, they alleged that the can size, the name and the “heaps of oranges” on the tin could lead children into thinking it was a children’s drink.

“The Panel believed that the stylised image of a heap of oranges, including one depicted as a sun, alongside the name ‘Juicebox’ which could be easily associated

with a children’s drink meant that this product had a particular appeal to under18s,” said the panel chair, Jenny Watson.

The panel noted that the product did convey to adults that it was an alcoholic drink.

However, the brewery had told regulators that it had never received any complaints from consumers over the packaging and that no retailers had suggested the packaging was particularly appealing to children.

It added that it “took compliance responsibilities very seriously,” including the need to make sure products were clearly branded as alcoholic.

The product was found to breach a rule that “a drink, its packaging and any promotional material or activity should not in any direct or indirect way have a particular appeal to under-18s.”

The beer’s design has now been changed in the wake of the ruling, the News understands.

Juicebox has been sold since March 2016 and is a consistent top seller for the brewery, based near to South Bermondsey station.

suspect chase in Peckham

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Southwark police officer needed surgery after being injured during a night-time chase of a suspect in Peckham last week.

The wanted man had attempted to evade arrest by climbing onto a fence in a bid to scale a roof on Peckham Hill Street at around 11.30pm on Friday, January 3.

He has since been arrested on suspicion of an unconnected incident of GBH, which cops are still investigating.

The PC slipped on a metal railing while attempting to stop the suspect, Inspector Owen Pyle told the News, causing a three-inch gash through his arm.

“He was conveyed to hospital at the time and is currently in surgery,” said Insp Pyle. “He was discharged on Monday 6th January and is recovering

at home.”

The injury was being treated as being sustained in the course of duty, and was not an assault, he stressed.

A Special Constable was also injured while attempting to catch the man, after falling off a wall and injuring his ankle.

He was also taken to hospital after being assessed by a nurse and was discharged on Saturday with a severe sprain and crutches.

Both are being supported by their line managers, said Insp Pyle.

Get well wishes have poured in to the two injured, with one person saying at the weekend: “Heard this call just as I was getting late off shift last night, glad they detained him but sad to hear the PC is still in hospital!

“Hopefully he’ll be discharged soon.”

Another added: “Please give my wishes for a speedy recovery and thank you all for your care and dedication to our safety.”

Bake off: popular venues close down We would like to thank our customers and staff for their support and commitment

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Brick House Bakeries in East Dulwich and Peckham have closed down after eight years due to a “crippling rent increase” and an expired lease.

In an Instagram post, the owners of two of London’s most acclaimed bakeries, Fergus and Sharmin Jackson, said they had taken the difficult decision not to reopen after the Christmas holidays after discovering they were losing both Southwark premises.

Hopes of finding a new home have now been dashed after realising “the numbers for us to carry on just don’t stack up”.

“It is with heavy hearts that Sharm and I have to announce that we have decided not to re-open Brick House after Christmas,” Fergus explained in an Instagram post last week.

“This may come as quite a shock, but behind the scenes we have found ourselves in the unfortunate situation

of facing the loss of both our premises within a couple of months of each other.

“A crippling rent increase is forcing us out of East Dulwich, and our landlords in Peckham have decided not to renew our lease when it expires in February.”

He added: “To say that we are heartbroken would be an understatement. Over the past eight years we have poured everything into Brick House to make it a success, and for it to come to an end in a way that has felt very much out of our control is extremely upsetting.”

They added: “We would like to thank our customers and staff past and present for their support and commitment,” and said they didn’t yet know what the future had in store, but they were “looking forward to spending a bit more time together as a family and getting some rest.”

The post racked up nearly a thousand supportive comments from saddened customers.

One lady, writing with the name Lucille

Baller, said: “I visited the East Dulwich location on a much needed trip after suffering my own loss. I had followed your bakery for years from my home in California.

“I still remember coming here, the friendly counter service, and eating (inhaling) toast with butter and jam and a Danish.

“Your bakery was one of my favourite moments on that trip. I still carry my Brick House tote bag. I’m so sorry for your space to close. What a gem. Best of luck.”

Others described the loss as “heartbreaking”, “injustice to everything you’ve given the local community”, and said they would be at a loss now as Brick House was one of their favourite things about East Dulwich.

One poster said: “So sorry to hear this.

Loved you guys from the early days with the blog. Am addicted to the breakfast chili corn muffins with eggs in.

“Can you share the recipe? I don’t know how I’ll cope without them when hungover”.

Ambulance service is rated ‘good’ overall

‘Fulsome praise’ deserved for coping with terrorist incidents

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The London Ambulance Service has been rated “good” overall by the care quality watchdog.

The Care Quality Commission inspected the service after receiving intelligence over “safety concerns”.

But in a statement announced on Friday, January 3, the commission said the overall rating has not been downgraded.

Alongside some examples of outstanding care, inspectors found that there were enough frontline staff to care for patients; they had training in the key skills needed; most knew how to protect patients from abuse and managed their safety well, and they treated patients with compassion and kindness. Staff also felt respected, supported and valued.

However, areas where it has been ordered to improve include making sure medicines are stored and identifiable, with batch numbers and expiry dates clearly visible.

Vehicles and access to stations need to be secured, and equipment restocking and the process for checking expiry dates need to be improved.

Professor Ted Baker, England’s chief inspector of hospitals, said: “The London Ambulance Service has again been rated good overall.

“It has to cope with a number of additional pressures working in the capital.

“Frontline staff deserve fulsome praise for the way they cope with terrorist incidents like the recent London Bridge attack.

“The trust also trained staff well, so they had the training in the key skills needed for their roles.”

REVOLUTIONARY WIRELESS INSULIN PUMP IS NOW AVAILABLE AT KING’S

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Type 1 diabetics treated at King’s College Hospital are the first in the UK to use a new wireless insulin pump.

The tubeless device provides up to three days of insulin without daily injections. It is attached to the wearers’ body and has an easy-to-use touchscreen handset described as being like a smartphone.

One of the first to try the insulin pump upgrade is 37-year-old finance worker Ben Smith, an ultra-marathon runner from Streatham, who will be running the London Marathon later this year.

“I’ve been using a wireless insulin pump for seven years and it has had a huge impact on my quality of life,” he said.

“I can just get on with my daily routine. The upgraded system is just like a mobile phone so programming my meals is more intuitive and userfriendly than before.

“The data collected will help the team at King’s to monitor my condition and allow me to continue managing my diabetes.”

The diabetes service at King’s is second to none. It’s progressive and has offered me innovative solutions to manage my condition and lead an active, healthy lifestyle.”

King’s runs the largest insulin pump service in the UK. Patients with Type 1 diabetes can’t produce insulin, a hormone which controls blood glucose.

It is not caused by diet or lifestyle factors – like Type 2 diabetes – but instead is an incurable auto-immune condition.

Insulin pumps help control the

condition by delivering tiny amounts of insulin into the bloodstream throughout the day and night to reduce the risk of “hypos”.

Pumps can dramatically improve patients’ quality of life as they have flexibility with what they eat and drink.

But currently pumps cost around £2,000 and last between four and eight years, and are not available to everyone on the NHS.

MP claims council gives residents the right to kill urban foxes

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council says it will investigate any evidence that comes to light after an extraordinary claim by Neil Coyle that officers told him the public can club, shoot or poison foxes.

The Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP waded into the controversial case of an Elephant and Castle-based QC, Jolyon Maughan, who tweeted to his 178,000 followers on Boxing Day that, while wearing a silk kimono, he clubbed a fox to death after finding it entangled in his chicken coop’s wire.

The top lawyer, known for campaigning against Brexit, later apologised for his actions after an outcry and intervention from the RSPCA. Southwark Council replied to concerned residents that its formal advice, displayed on its website, was to always call the RSPCA in an emergency, or local charity The Fox Project and

not to take the matter into your own hands as foxes are a protected species.

But Coyle claims this conflicts with advice he and his constituents are regularly given, arguing the issue is much wider than the “excitable beast” of twitter getting “carried away” over this single case.

“The council has previously advised me that clubbing foxes is ok,” he told the News. “Their most recent advice is that “eradicating” foxes by shooting or poison is acceptable.”

Coyle described the idea of the animals being “cuddly” as “rather silly”, saying over the years many constituents had raised concerns over fox numbers, noise and mess.

“I know some people are squeamish about these things but no one should pretend there are easy answers.

“Some people might try to hide the guidance of council officers because they think it makes them look better on twitter, but that’s not something I worry about as I hope News readers know!”

Richard Livingstone, Tooley Street’s cabinet member for the environment,

raised doubts over the claims.

“Both the law and council’s advice on foxes is clear: the law offers them protection and the council does not support illegal actions such as bludgeoning, poisoning, or shooting foxes in an urban environment.

“The council’s webpage on the subject is clear, and council advice is strictly and consistently of a preventative nature.

“We are unclear as to which advice from the council the Member of Parliament is referring to.

“But we have asked his office if he could share this with us, so that we can investigate and, if need be, correct any erroneous advice he may have received in the past.”

Mishi’s family have given an open invitation to friends, colleagues and fellow DHFC fans to say goodbye.

Wellwishers are encouraged to pay their respects as Mishi’s carriage travels through Champion Hill at approximately 2.45pm on Wednesday, January 15, as it makes its way to Honor Oak Crematorium for the 4pm service. A wake will be held at Champion Hill from 5.15pm, with further

tributes.

As there is limited space at Honor Oak, and many mourners are expected to join, the club has invited those who are not close family or friends to remain at the clubhouse during the service.

Mishi had requested that no black was to be worn at his funeral. Instead, everyone is asked to wear their Dulwich Hamlet kit or clothing, or any other football kit.

Stare it in the face. Get upset - then dry your eyes and get organised

news@southwarknews.co.uk It’s no surprise Clare Farrell describes the last eighteen months as “a bit of a whirlwind”.

Since Extinction Rebellion launched in October 2018, its activists have brought London to a standstill, twice; blocked roads, ports and runways across the UK; poured fake blood over Downing Street, gone on mass hunger strike and glued themselves to planes, trains, and even the House of Commons viewing gallery - naked - to demand action on climate change. And that’s just in this country.

The movement’s headline-grabbing, non-violent tactics have brought the climate crisis to national attention and ensured it stays there. Clare didn’t predict XR’s rapid rise - “Did I expect it take off to this extent? No, of course not!” - but its pacey expansion reflects the severity of the crisis at hand.

“If we don’t do anything,” she explains, “we’re committed to a 3-4 degree warmer world by the end of the century at a minimum. It’s questionable whether human beings can adapt to even two or three degrees, especially at the pace it’s going to come. Some think we’ll hit 1.5 this coming decade, which is supposed to be the limit. You can’t just press a button and go ‘oh s**t, we’re there now, turn it off’”.

The straight-talking former fashion designer doesn’t mince her words on what a warmer world could entail.

“Potentially big sea level rises - by 2050, loads of London underwater. Loads of where I grew up in the north east underwater. A Welsh coastal village, Fairbourne, is being decommissioned already. The World Bank said that 140

“There’ll be no business continuity, no predictable weather. Roger [Hallam, XR co-founder] has been criticised for saying that six billion people will die this century. That’s an atrocity worse than anything in human history. The lowest estimate I’ve heard from scientists is about 4 billion. Look at South Africa right now: the drought that’s there [the worst in 100 years] is destroying people’s homes, livelihoods, crops. I saw a message that said people are drinking out of animal troughs and shooting each other over access to water. That’s now.

“I think in ten years’ time, people are going to look back at this moment and think: why weren’t millions of us in the street demanding that something happens?”

Clare went through that thought process - “the ‘dark night of the soul’

when we realise we’re totally f**ked” - before co-founding XR with fellow activists. “I felt like an insane person,” she explains, “because the rest of the world was acting like this isn’t real.

That’s the pain of living in a system that doesn’t want to change: you can see what’s coming down the road and there’s no collective response. To meet people and start doing action was cathartic; a way of doing the right thing, resisting what is morally unacceptable for me.”

Disruption-focused tactics have earnt XR a notorious reputation and exposed the movement to significant criticism. But for Clare, it’s a necessary evil. “Unless you create significant disruption, nothing changes,” she says. “Two million people marched against the war in Iraq. It’s been super disheartening for a whole generation of activists to live with that level of mobilisation being completely ignored.”

Not that XR’s strategy is always easy to action. “Getting nicked is frightening,”

Clare admits, “But when you’re sat in a police cell it’s like: what else can I do? It feels like something, when the world is doing nothing.”

XR has also been accused of lacking empathy for society’s least well off, following a disastrous rush hour tube protest at Canning Town. “There’s a conversation to be had about whether we’ve tried hard enough to do outreach in London,” says Clare. “The lowhanging fruit is often people who are middle class. We have a socioeconomic issue here, which is the conditions under which we’re working. I’d prefer to say: yes, we’ve f**ked it up and we’ll go and fix it. But it’s not easy to fix, so I don’t want to answer like that because it’s not simple. All we can say is: we’re trying. But we have to do something now, in the conditions society is in.

Perhaps that’s the best way, because society is really unjust and in theory this is a great leveller - climate change is coming for everyone. It doesn’t matter how rich you are.”

What can people do now about the climate crisis? “Be in open rebellion against the state,” Clare says simply.

“Something’s gotta give - the political system won’t do it. Look at transition towns and people who’ve taken control of local politics; there are a few cases in the UK. Stop flying, eating so much meat and driving private cars all the time.

Stop building things out of concrete; it’s got a huge carbon footprint hardly anyone talks about. Stop deforestation.

Some of it’s quite simple really; stop doing the harm.

“Also, read about it. Process it; stare it in the face, because it’s not possible to deal with this unless you really try to accept it. I still sometimes fall apart.

Get upset - then dry your eyes and get organised.

“Greta Thunberg said: you get hope through action. There isn’t much hope knocking about at the moment, but you can earn it. That makes me sound like an idiotic optimist, but most people have got it in them.”

families forced out for christmas over leaks

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Two distraught families were forced to move out over Christmas after serious leaks left them with no electricity, destroyed their furnishings, and even led to a collapsed ceiling as Southwark Council struggled to cope with holiday emergencies.

Tony Dolan, who lives in Peckham’s Laburnum Close, told the News the Friday before Christmas he was getting in touch out of “desperation” after having hot water leaking into his flat due to a damaged service pipe for more than a month, despite daily calls to the council’s repairs service.

On December 20 he explained: “I have three young children in my property, two of whom suffer from severe asthma and due this leak from a Southwark Council service pipe my son aged three has a chest infection.

“I have sent the council numerous pictures, emails and calls yet still no one to be seen. To top things off I have contacted my housing officer and after leaving five voicemails I eventually got through to him and explained my problem only to be told, and I quote, “it’s not my job”.

Southwark’s contractors were able to turn off the electricity to make the newly decorated house safe, but without electricity and with water still flowing into the damp home they had to spend Christmas at Tony’s mum’s house.

On January 2, he updated the News: “When I spoke to someone they stated that unless it’s gushing out it’s not urgent.

“Does it take one of my children to open the cupboard door and get scalded with boiling water for it to be urgent?”

Police were called by London Ambulance Service paramedics to the street near the junction with Walworth Road, at 5.25am.

Officers found a 20-year-old with stab injuries. He was treated at the scene before going to hospital.

Medics have assessed the victim’s condition as “non life-threatening”.

So far there have been no arrests.

Officers’ inquiries continue.

Tony Dolan, Peckham flat Rotherhithe, had his own nightmare before Christmas.

On December 20 he, his partner, who was 31 weeks pregnant at the time, and their two-year-old daughter woke up to water streaming through their light fittings.

Emergency workers turned off the electricity supply, but advised the leak would not be resolved until early January – leaving him devastated that his pet fish may die without power for their tank.

Fortunately the leak was stopped three days later, but the now-collapsed ceiling won’t be seen by contractors until later this month.

“I’ve had to spend half of Christmas and New Year alone because the council didn’t think it was an emergency,” he said on Sunday.

The 20-yearold Harlem Spartans rapper, from Kennington, was pronounced dead at the scene. Morgan will appear in court at a date as yet unconfirmed. He has also been charged with possession of an offensive weapon.

Jamie says the leak and water damage is the “last straw” after problems including asbestos tiles, a bathroom “falling to pieces” and heating that has constantly broken over the last two years.

“This is no place for a child and a baby to be living in. I am absolutely fed up.

They want their rent money and council tax,” he said.

“We want a nice home that we deserve.

Always a temporary fix or no fix at all.

“No electric and then wait till 3rd of January for the leak to get fixed. Right before Christmas. They are ruining our lives.”

Councillor Kieron Williams, cabinet member for housing management and modernisation at the council, apologised

to the families for what they had to cope with over the holiday.

“Our engineers visited Mr Kelly’s property on the day he reported the problem to make the electrics safe.

Roofers have already attended and further works are ordered, including the asbestos work,” he said.

“We have also now accessed the property above Mr Dolan’s, fixed the leak and begun work to dry out and repair the damp.

“Gaining access to fix leaks from neighbouring homes can be difficult, particularly when tenants are away for Christmas.

“We have a dedicated team to deal this and we do force entry where we have to but understandably we first have to take reasonable steps to arrange for the tenant or leaseholder to let us in.”

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Sainsbury’s has issued an apology after a visually-impaired woman was told her guide dog couldn’t enter its Herne Hill store.

Rachael Stevens was about to go into the Herne Hill Road shop on January 4 when she was told her dog couldn’t enter.

After explaining her dog was a guide dog, she received no response or apology.

twitter to contact the chain store after the distressing incident, saying: “@Sainsbury’s might be worth properly training your staff in the Herne Hill local branch so the next guide dog user who enters isn’t told to leave, unlike my wife and her dog (the one with the massive “guide dog sign” and harness”.

He added: “Staff at our nearest Sainsbury’s in Brixton are always welcoming. What’s most disappointing is, whilst my wife and I can stand up for ourselves, it is things like this that can destroy a guide dog users’ confidence and independence.”

Local MP Helen Hayes described her experience as “completely unacceptable” and pledged to take up the complaint with Sainsbury’s, as hundreds shared their support online.

Herne Hill councillor Jim Dickson said he would look into the possibility of Lambeth Council’s trading standards getting involved.

Ms Stevens, described the staff members’ actions as “depressingly

common” and asked Sainsbury’s to make a donation to the Guide Dogs charity as an apology, and commit to working with the charity to assess at its existing inhouse training for staff.

The incident was particularly galling given her partner, a journalist, had written an article six months ago in a national newspaper about how a British Paralympic ski champion had been left “shaken and humiliated” after he and his guide dog were told they were not allowed inside a Sainsbury’s round the corner from the company’s head office.

After a request from the News, a Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “Assistance dogs are welcome in all of our stores and petrol stations and we have apologised to Rachael for her experience.

“We will remind all stores of our policy and hope to welcome Rachael and her assistance dog back into store soon.”

The spokesperson did not answer the News questions about whether it would honour Ms Stevens’ requests.

Teens call on police to stop posting images of weapons

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A Southwark youth campaign is calling on the Met to stop sharing images of weapons seized during stop and search, saying it is creating more fear and perpetuating bad stereotypes.

One hundred student from five schools in Southwark have taken part in the campaign organised by community group Citizens UK. The charity says after listening to the views of thousands of young people in Southwark in Southwark, the biggest issue that came up was youth violence, with the relationship between young people and the police their main concern.

At the end of November, 70 young people met with Southwark and Lambeth’s top brass, asking the Met to stop posting pictures of weapons on social media, arguing it is “counter-productive” and “incites fear and violence”.

The group say a better way to build trust would be to focus more on the positive things young people are doing in the borough.

But top cop defends tactic to show the work being done by officers

The Met has made it clear it will not be censoring its work from public view, but Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Messinger, Southwark and Lambeth’s borough commander, said his team was already trying to promote engagement work, too.

“Images are posted on the Met’s social media accounts to highlight the scale of operational activity being undertaken to tackle and reduce violent crime in London and to give Londoners confidence in the effectiveness of the operational response,” he told the News.

“However, we understand that some people feel that images of weapons may not be reassuring.

“The MPS is committed to also using positive images, which is why uplifting stories and photos about police activity are regularly shared across our channels, most notably on the Met’s Instagram page: @metpolice_uk which has a bigger teenage following than our other social media channels.”

If the force did change tack, it would

not be without precedent. In September, Thames Valley Police decided to stop posting images of weapons from a knife amnesty campaign.

Although there is no formal guidance on the use of social media images of seized weapons, the issue has been debated by the National Police Chiefs’ Council, after concerns it was fuelling an arms race and potentially traumatising teenage victims.

The campaign also has support from schools and churches. Sandra Schloss, the assistant priest of St Luke’s Church in Peckham said young people were “horrified” at the pictures being posted online by the police.

“Churches, schools and the community are in support of removing these images and so are working together with the young people to have them taken down,” she said.

“These images reflect a small proportion of what some young people do, and the majority are about so much more than carrying knives.”

Three people were treated for minor smoke inhalation after a fire in a Peckham flat.

James Allen’s Girls’ School has announced its new head teacher, taking up the post in September this year.

The fire broke out at 11.39am on Friday, January 3, in a four-room flat in Winvenhoe Close.

Crews from New Cross and Old Kent Road had it under control by 12.19pm.

It is believed the fire was caused by an “electric event within an extraction unit”.

Alex Hutchinson, currently head of Woldingham School and a former JAGS science teacher, will be taking over from Sally-Anne Huang, who has held the position since 2015.

Mrs Hutchinson said joining JAGS was

an “exceptional privilege”, explaining: “JAGS is a school at the heart of its own community and I have such happy memories of my time here teaching chemistry.

“I very much look forward to getting to know everyone and working with girls, staff, parents and governors to further embed our vision for a unique and outstanding education.”

The election was a massive mistake, but I’m grateful for the trust you have placed in me

his Christmas I have been reminded how caring our great community is: from events in local schools, churches and tenants and residents’ halls to everyone who gave up their time to make someone else’s Christmas better.

I spent the big day helping Esme open her presents then went to Bacon’s College to see the Bermondsey People Care event for isolated or disadvantaged people.

I also went up Guy’s Tower for the amazing Bermondsey Care for the Elderly meal for older people and know there were similar events run by volunteers across Southwark and I want to thank all those who help others over Christmas.

I did get my own meal later in the day and enjoyed some much-needed family time after the December election!

I did not back the early election and was surprised and angry when the SNP and Lib Dems helped Boris Johnson go the polls before the People’s Vote had been secured.

It was a massive mistake and means Johnson now has a massive parliamentary majority. But I’m incredibly grateful for the trust so many local people put in me again in this election.

Campaigning is always rewarding and my team spoke with thousands of local people. To win with an increased majority and vote share was overwhelming, especially given

When the blitz came to Southwark – history article from the online archive I was looking into my grandmother’s brothers and remembered that my father said to me that his Uncle Billy Foy had his share of bad luck. They lived in Bermondsey and when my grandmother moved to Lewisham she was called “Bermondsey Sal”.

Her family, the Foy family, had lived in Bermondsey since the 1700s. Why was Billy Foy a sad story?

Well he was gassed in the first war, his oldest son killed in Cranham Road bombing in Sept 1940 and his youngest son died when the HMS Repulse was sunk off Singapore in 1941.

The News has covered my concerns about Labour needing to better reflect modern Britain and pursue policies that are more relevant to people’s daily lives.

I believe Corbyn should have gone some time ago, but Labour is finally in the process of electing a new leader.

Hundreds of people have already joined in Southwark since the election to help us move in the right direction. We need to move away from Corbyn’s toxic team as quickly as possible.

Having an electable leader, with charisma and able to attract support will be a key step in rebuilding the party and, I hope, win the next election.

In the meantime, we‘ve had elections and a referendum every year since 2014 and 2020 will be no exception: we have London elections for the Mayor and Assembly.

I was out with Sadiq Khan last week highlighting his policy to allow carers to travel for free with disabled people, which is a very welcome idea.

He has also just announced another freeze in tube fares and the continuation of the hopper fare which benefit thousands of people in Southwark every day!

However, I worry about what Johnson’s Government will do to our community in Southwark.

His majority makes a damaging Brexit very likely and I have already heard concerns from worried local people and employers.

There is very little in Johnson’s past failings to suggest he will now seriously tackle the housing crisis, the massive growth in foodbank usage, or rebuild community safety after a decade of police cuts, but I will keep up the pressure in Westminster to finally fix Universal Credit, to get on with the Bakerloo Line extension to give us more of the homes we need, and to reform mental healthcare.

I will continue to stand up for Bermondsey and Old Southwark whatever damaging policies the Johnson Government reveals.

outhwark Council declared a Climate Emergency in March 2019. Since then, silence. Residents are still waiting for the promised action plan.

Meanwhile much of the council seems to be on autopilot, stuck in old habits with no sense of urgency.

It’s staggering that Southwark persisted in its bad habit of promoting car travel by offering free parking on Saturdays in December 2019.

As for lack of urgency – at a presentation about refurbishing five Camberwell housing estates, Cllr Leo Pollak was asked how the works would help cut carbon consumption and prepare for hotter summers.

Would solar panels be installed, for example? He replied with some good long-term ideas but admitted there were no climate measures planned for these estates, even though the refurb is “once in a generation”.

I don’t usually make New Year resolutions, but this year I’ve resolved to raise the climate emergency at every opportunity.

We need to test everything we do against the question: “How will this action affect the climate?”

We can make sure our future is discussed at every work, school, community and public meeting, even if it’s at the end, under “Any Other Business”. Make that a moment to ask questions about planting trees or saving energy – because the climate emergency is “All Our Business”.

I’ve realised you don’t need to have all the answers to ask. Someone else in the room will know how the shop down the road avoids plastic packaging or how another council is building low-energy homes.

It helps to join up with other people.

At work, you can contact unions and groups like Culture Declares Emergency, Flying Less, Medact and Scientists for Extinction Rebellion.

Around schools, parents are providing the vital information to tackle both air pollution and climate change. Mums for Lungs hand out flyers about the harm from idling engines and together with Clean Air for Dulwich have put up banners outside schools that read: Pollution INSIDE CARS can be three times higher than outside: Walk, Cycle or Scoot. Don’t Pollute.

Dual crossword Police must be allowed to report their findings

T

his week another young person became a victim of knife crime, critically injured just metres from Kennington tube station.

A section 60 was put in place aas police highlighted rising tension in the area.

For young people going to school, working, and playing with friends, the worry a knife could be produced is a real and constant fear. The Met has been clear that it believes social media and sharing videos via whatsapp, youtube and other media is one way knife crime is being fuelled.

But this criticism does not extend to their own social media – showing knives, guns, and other weapons seized or found in routine stops. School pupils are saying that seeing these images scares them and are worried it is counter-productive and may even encourage some frightened youngsters to start carrying weapons of their own. They also think the biggest issue the police faces is young people’s trust – and that a focus on sharing operational tactics will only perpetuate the negative view of “youth”.

These are good points, well-argued and indicative of the thoughtfulness and consideration of many of our politically engaged students. But isn’t the real issue that much of social media is not suitable for children until they reach a certain age?

The police is now a “service” and not just a long arm of law enforcement. But its main job is catching criminals, preventing crime, and telling people what they have achieved and what is happening in the area.

Like a newspaper, sometimes the news the police has to share is frightening, makes for uncomfortable reading, and content can be distressing. Not all of it is suitable for young eyes.

Wouldn’t it be better for young people to limit the time they spend on social media, to be fully aware about what is happening where so they can make informed choices about their own safety? It’s not always easy to find the right balance, but we would all be doing this borough and its residents a huge disservice by focusing only on the good, or only on the bad.

Despite the outcry there is a problem with foxes

t’s difficult to say what caused more of an outcry, the fact a QC clubbed a fox to death that had become trapped in chicken wire, that he did it whilst wearing his wife’s “small green kimono” and battling a hangover, or that he decided to announce these startling facts to the world via the medium of twitter… on Boxing Day.

The inevitable twitter storm, outcry, and shaming began. The RSPCA – rightly – became involved. But the wider issue, as MP Neil Coyle rightly points out, is that fox management is a tricky business. How do we live alongside these animals as they become bolder, and less afraid of humans?

Our vulpine friends are such a distinctive feature of Southwark that we even named our sister magazine, Urban Fox, after them. Neil Coyle is right to say they aren’t cuddly. Foxes have been known to attack when cornered and have been responsible for injuring and even killing small children after entering homes through back garden doors and windows. Their numbers are exploding because there’s so much food everywhere. Don’t shoot them, poison them or club them – but don’t try and make friends with them either. For everyone’s safety it is better if they retain a wariness around humans

A curate in the Church of England has come up with a novel way of making the Church more relevant to young people.

He has plotted how far away each bishop is from their nearest Nando’s.

For each of the Church’s Disosean Cathedrals, Fergus Butler-Gallie has charted how long it would take the area’s bishop to stroll to the nearest Nando chain.

(He explains: “It assumes a median episcopal walking speed, convocation dress only.”)

But we spy a flaw with the methodology. The graph has Southwark’s bishop taking a leisurely ten minutes to pick up a chicken order walking from Southwark Cathedral.

But it’s a five minute walk at most from Southwark Cathedral to the popular restaurant on nearby Clink Street.

If the Bishop happens to be heading that way, our order is a half chicken, extra hot.

Now that Southwark and Lambeth AM Florence Eshalomi has become an MP, Labour’s nominations for the vacancy are underway.

(The deadline was January 5, despite some correspondence inviting members to stand apparently being sent out after this.)

However, this time around there’s a difference.

In 2016, the selection process was an all-woman shortlist (AWS).

Four years on, it’s open to men, too.

It’s a move that’s prompted head-scratching among Labour types, given the departing incumbent is a woman.

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The Dulwich Picture Gallery has revealed the two valuable Rembrandt works which were the target of an audacious nighttime heist in November.

A brazen snatch attempt of the paintings was foiled only when the unknown criminal dumped the artworks in the gallery’s grounds while being pursued by security staff.

Now the gallery has revealed that the two paintings that the criminal managed to remove were Pilgrims at Emmaus, and Philemon and Baucis.

They have now been returned to their lenders, the Louvre in Paris, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC respectively.

1648’s Pilgrims at Emmaus shows Jesus breaking bread with pilgrims following his resurrection, while the second painting shows Roman gods revealing themselves to the elderly Philemon and Baucis.

A spokeswoman for the gallery said: “The two works targeted were Pilgrims at Emmaus from the Musée du Louvre, Paris, and Philemon and Baucis, from the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. “The two works are now back with their lenders. We worked closely with the two lenders of the works in question, ensuring they could be returned swiftly and safely.”

The heist was staged only minutes before midnight on November 13. The burglar managed to snatch two of the 35 pieces of artwork from the major

exhibition.

The criminal set off the gallery’s internal alarm system, and was able only to make their escape after spraying a police officer in the face with an unknown substance.

The attempted theft forced the gallery to close for more than two weeks.

The condition of the artworks are now being examined by the respective lending galleries. Scotland Yard is still hunting for those responsible for the daring art heist.

Rembrandt’s Light exhibition looks at the Dutch artist’s works between 1639 and 1658. The exhibition, which has received positive reviews, closes on February 2.

Rembrandt is widely considered one of the best artists in history.

The Thames Festival Trust’s annual Thames Lens Photography competition runs until Friday, January 31.

The theme is ‘Thames Discovered’ and applicants are asked to get “up close and personal” with the river.

“Thames Lens is a highlight of the year. The river means different things to different people – a place to relax by the riverside, a way to get around, at the heart of sporting communities, a trading hub, as a unique and valued habitat, and so much more,” said Alistair Gale of the Port of London Authority, which supports the competition.

“The images submitted to Thames Lens every year reflect this and I can’t wait to see this year’s entries!”

Two members of the eight-piece ska and reggae band, The Dualers, are due to perform at the Keetons Estate Tenants’ Hall on behalf of the charity, which grants wishes to seriously ill children.

The popular band, from south-east London, have previously earned top 30 UK singles and supported the band Madness, despite having little industry backing. experience, photography courses, and the chance to have your photo displayed in an exhibition attended by river interest groups.

Alongside the competition is a mudlarking tour around the foreshore by Southwark Bridge, led by photographer Hannah Smiles, one of the judges of the competition. The tour runs on Sunday, January 12 from 9.30am to 11am.

“An incident occurred at Tate Modern on 28 December when a member of the public attempted to damage a painting,” said the Tate Modern in a statement. “The person was swiftly apprehended and has been charged.

Police are investigating. The work of art is with our conservation team for expert assessment. Tate Modern remains open.”

The 20-year-old was remanded in custody until Thursday, January 30 ahead of a pre-trial hearing at Inner London Crown Court.

The 1944 work of art depicts Picasso’s lover, Dora Maar, and was painted during the final months of the Nazi occupation of Paris.

portraits anniversary celebration 56 Black Men campaign took men from all walks of life to challenge negative stereotypes and may now plan more events in future

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The 56 Black Men campaign to change negative stereotypes and narratives about black men celebrated its one year anniversary in style last month.

Launched by entrepreneur and photographer Cephas Williams in December 2018, 56 Black Men is a series of 56 portraits of black men from all walks of life, showing their diversity of talent and aspiration in an effort to challenge negative portrayals of black men in society.

The anniversary party celebrated the campaign’s success so far, and was an opportunity to plan for more action in future.

Held at The Warehouse in SE16’s Stockholm Road, among the hundreds of guests were songwriter and producer JUNGLEBOI, dancers from GDND, and students from south Bermondsey performing arts school Amplified Arts Academy.

Williams said: “It is time the media and society stopped portraying

black men as perpetrators or victims of violence and crime and started spotlighting the incredible things the black community are doing with a specific focus on black men who have more often than not been represented in a negative light.”

In 2018, the portraits were displayed on billboards across the UK and quickly went viral online – including one image put up on Peckham High Street.

Last year, the campaign held a special Father’s Day event in Peckham, highlighting positive role models.

Some of the faces of the campaign include Raphael Dapaah, a commercial policy advisor for the civil service, and founder of Dapaah Chocolates; primary school teacher and parttime journalist Trevon Muhammad; Sky and Football Daily presenter and production assistant Samuel Obaseki; Shane Ryan, the Big Lottery Fund’s head of partnerships; top dentist David O’Milegan; and Tottenham MP David Lammy.

In all portraits the men are wearing a black hoodie, championing the idea “I am not my stereotype”.

winter safety campaign in memory of a guy’s doctor killed by driver with frosty windscreen

who was killed by a careless driver who failed to clear his windscreen.

The driver of the black Ford Fiesta, Alexander Fitzgerald, had been driving a car he did not own and was not insured to drive – and also had not cleared the windscreen of frost before setting off.

The university student, from Essex, was jailed in January last year.

Now Ms Singhota’s sister, Neha Santasalo, has teamed up with the Met to encourage motorists to be safe while driving in winter to prevent another tragedy in a campaign called ‘ReadyfortheRoad.’

“I think about my sister every day, she was an incredible person. As a fully trained doctor she dedicated her life to helping people,” she said.

“She had big plans to work around the world on various projects to help those in need where she could.

“All that was taken from her and us when a driver set off without clearing the frost from his windscreen.

“It breaks my heart to know that there will be so many things that we will now never have the opportunity to do together; from the small things we take for granted such as meeting and catching up over a cup of tea, to the bigger life events including not being able to see her get married, travel the world or for our children

police re-appeal Druid street stabbing and mass brawl

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Police have launched a renewed appeal for information about a near-fatal stabbing of a sixteen-year-old boy in Bermondsey’s Druid Street.

The stabbing took place on Sunday, October 6th shortly after 10pm, in the vicinity of the St John Bakery.

An altercation is believed to have taken place beforehand, said police.

The victim received a “serious” stab wound and was “hospitalised for over a week for his injuries,” part of which he spent in a critical condition.

According to an attempted murder appeal circulated to the residents of the nearby Arnold Estate, “a large group of young males are believed to have been involved in the incident

and it likely caused a lot of commotion.”

On Friday and Saturday, local officers circulated the leaflets in the hope of catching the people responsible for the stabbing.

“It was her selfless nature demonstrated through organ donation that led her to save the lives of five other people and for that I am immensely proud of her.”

Ms Santasalo urged drivers to take time to clear their mirrors and screens before starting their journey, saying that simple steps such as using a de-icer and a scraper could save lives.

“My sister’s death was entirely unnecessary and if I can help save one life or prevent serious injuries on the road through this message, then I will be proud to have that as part of her legacy and life-long commitment to helping people, and to prevent another family from having to go through what ours did,” she added.

Fitzgerald “has to live the rest of his life knowing that his actions led to the death of a gifted doctor who had her whole life ahead of her,” said the Met’s Detective Superintendent Andy Cox. “The collision was entirely avoidable if only some time had been taken to prepare the car for the trip ahead.”

In 2018, 112 people were killed and a further 3,954 suffered serious injuries on London’s roads.

Council makes eight promises for station redevelopment

A new charter will be drawn up listing eight ‘promises’ including more programmes for young people and more council housing

along St Thomas Street.

“For St Thomas Street we have identified a series of goals and projects following a detailed research and engagement exercise with over 300 households, walkabouts, workshops and interviews with key stakeholders in the area,” said Cllr Leo Pollak.

A consultation into the proposed changes is due to start this month.

Secret London linocuts plus the poetry and prose behind them

Painter and printmarker’s Gail Brodholt is opening her latest exhibition Poetry, Prose and Prints at a Bermondsey Street gallery next month.

A voracious reader, who is constantly inspired by the written word she best known for her stunning linocuts. These often depict the London Underground, train stations and other scenes of transport and the titles for the pieces are from poetry or prose that have touched her in some way. A poem, Buses on the Strand(by R. P. Lister), lent its title to one of Gail’s newest linocuts: The Strand is beautiful with buses, Fat and majestical in form Red like tomatoes in their trusses In August, when the sun is warm.

They cluster in the builded chasm, Corpulent fruit, a hundred strong, And now and then a secret spasm Spurs them a yard or two along.

Scarlet and portly and seraphic, Contented in the summer’s prime, They beam among the jumbled traffic, Patiently ripening with time, Till, with a final jerk and rumble, The Strand tomatoes, fat and fair, Roll past the traffic lights and tumble Gleefully down Trafalgar Square.

There is a double bill of plays on in Southwark Playhouse’s two theatres

Brodholt’s work provides an organic melding of word and image, going beyond being simply an illustration

Southwark Playhouse is staging two plays to kick off 2020, both set in offices.

You Stupid Darkness! is an urgent play about the struggle for optimism and community amid the chaos of a collapsing world.

In a cramped, crumbling office four volunteers spend a few hours every Tuesday night on the phone to strangers telling them everything is going to be ok.

As the outside world disintegrates around them, Frances, Joey, Angie and Jon teeter on the edge of their own personal catastrophes.

Their hopes and fears become entangled as they try, desperately, to connect with the callers and with each other.

The production is directed by former Paines Plough co-Artistic Director James Grieve and the cast includes: Andrew Finnigan; Jenni Maitland; Lydia Larson; Andy Rush.

of a poem or piece of writing. To the artist, both poems and artworks are ‘like going for a walk’: they could lead to many narratives or discoveries. This exhibition foregrounds the relationships between poetry, prose, and Gail’s linocuts.

This exhibition coincides with a prestigious project that Gail has been working on with London Transport.

She was commissioned to produce prints for two posters to support their initiative ‘Hidden London,’ which aims to open up the secrets of disused parts of the London Underground network.

She was asked to feature two stations: The Strand / Aldwych station and the Highgate High Level station. Both of these striking posters will be displayed throughout London in early 2020.

Born in South London, Gail trained at the School of Fine Art, Kingston University. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE) and was appointed Honorary Curator in 2013.

Gail is the recipient of many awards and prizes in-cluding the Birgit Skiöld Award and the Paintings in Hospitals prize. She is based in Woolwich, South London.

Admission: Free. www.eamesfineart.com The other offering ‘Cops’ by American writer Tony Tortora, is a new play inspired by real-life events in the often brutal and corrupt world of 1950s Chicago policing and mob violence.

In Chicago in 1957 four cops, different ages, classes and races, mired in duplicity and mutual suspicion, have to grab a gangster turned state witness before the Mob do.

Outside their office the world is changing, the civil rights movement, race riots, mass consumerism, rock ‘n’ roll and Elvis has arrived! Plus sex is everywhere.

This is billed as much comedy as it is drama, with “wonderfully written characters, razor-sharp, witty banter, authentic spiky dialogue, and explosive scenes of emotional power and soulbaring poignancy.”

Cops examines masculinity and racism whilst offering a touching message about how love conquers all and blood being thicker than water.

The Girl With Glitter In Her Eye The bunker theatre in Borough latest offering is being billed as one story told by two women through three voices.

Written and directed by Masha Kevinovna, and produced by Nikita Karia, The Girl With Glitter in Her Eye tells the story of a complex, female friendship complicated by the revelation of trauma and examines where the boundaries of consent lie.

Fusing spoken word, original composition, and live music OPIA Collective - a collaboration of female and LGBTQIA+ artists explore socially and politically challenging topics in their trademark multidisciplinary style.

Phil is keeping a secret that she might never overcome and Helen is an artist desperate to stand out. She compromises a close friendship when she finds inspiration in Phil’s story. But is it possible to tell someone’s story

without silencing them along the way?

Director Masha Kevinovna said, ‘The original aim with this story was to explore and expose rape culture that is engrained into our society yet as the show developed it evolved into becoming a story about consent and the different contexts in which the lines are blurred.

“It is a particularly important theme not just for me personally but in the current political landscape where voices are being removed or silenced with ease.

Can you get away with murder? Fire Hazard Games launches an exciting, new urban game for adults, based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s Gothic masterpiece, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, at this year’s Vaults Festival.

Exploring schisms of identity, the unreliability of memory, moral conflict, terrible ambition, and unbridled hedonism, Jekyll / Hyde confronts players, asking what they would do if they could get away with murder.

Waking up to the aftermath of Mr Hyde, players are plunged into a thrilling world of investigation and moral ambiguity as their twisted deeds from the night before are revealed.

Taking on the role of Dr Jekyll, they must retrace their steps to uncover their hidden past and make decisions about their future, all while under increasing time pressure.

Presented in association with Vault Festival - London’s biggest arts festival in Waterloo – and using Fire Hazard’s unique blend of mobile game, real-world scavenger hunt, narrative storytelling and performers, Jekyll / Hyde is a theatrical adventure across both the virtual and real world.

Players will be guided through the game by a web app on their phones to encounter a cast of characters on their way through the dark and sinister Lambeth streets.

Michelle Hudson, producer at Fire Hazard, says, We’re always looking for new ways to put the audience at the heart of our stories. With Jekyll / Hyde, we’re giving audiences the chance to explore the darker sides of their own psyches.

This is also Fire Hazard’s first time as part of Vault Festival and are thrilled to take part in this cornerstone of London’s cultural scene.

Players can participate solo, in a pair or in a group of up to 3 – all that’s needed is a phone and a desire to play!

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk It’s a pub that’s been a boardedup shell for years at the corner of Lordship Lane and Sydenham Hill Wood.

But did you know it was once home to one of England’s most notorious writers and lovers, the man for whom the phrase “mad, bad and dangerous to know” was coined?

Although more often celebrated for his connections to Italy and Greece, it could be argued one of our greatest poets may have owed something of his talent to a short tenure at school in East Dulwich.

Born on January 22, 1788 in London, George Gordon Byron inherited his title after the deaths of his profligate father – when he was just three - and great uncle, who was known as “the wicked Lord.”

The young 6th Lord Byron was shipped off to Dr Glennie’s Academy in 1799, and spent just two short years at the small boarding school until 1801, when he wrote to his family: “I am going to leave this damned place at Easter and am going to Harrow.”

Byron was initially sent to the East Dulwich school so he could receive treatment for his “club foot” from the best doctors in London. Treatment was largely unsuccessful and the disability dogged his self-esteem for life.

Unlike the other boys, the young George had a bed and room of his own – even if this meant sleeping in Dr Glennie’s study.

Dr Glennie, a well-travelled Scotsman, wrote to one correspondent of his new charge: “I found him enter upon his tasks with alacrity and success. He was playful, good humoured, and beloved of his companions.

“His reading in history and poetry was far beyond the usual standard of his age, and in my study he found many books open to him, both to please his taste and to satisfy his curiosity.”

Although Byron was yet to rebel in any great measure, Dr Glennie did have his hands full with his mother, Lady Byron, who would often remove her son from school for weeks at a time, and was known to cosset and over indulge him.

Byron was behind his peers when he arrived at Harrow. There, his headmaster, Dr Joseph Drury, said upon the arrival of the thirteenyear-old: “I soon found that a wild mountain colt had been submitted to my management.”

By the time he entered his teens Byron had a reputation for wilfulness, disdain for authority, and voracious appetites for many vices. He was not considered especially academically gifted.

As was usual for a noble, Byron studied at Cambridge University despite his lacking academic performance, where he dedicated his time to pursuits of sport, drinking, gambling and sexual escapades with both sexes.

He could be charming and

infuriating in equal measure, writing of his character: “I am so changeable, being everything by turns and nothing long, - I am such a strange melange of good and evil, that it would be difficult to describe me.”

Like many aristocrats and gentlemen of the age, after completing his studies Byron embarked on a “grand tour” of Europe, and spent two years in Mediterranean, where he began writing Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage.

After publication upon his return in 1811 fame and acclaim was

instant, and poetry quickly overtook the parliamentary career he had envisaged for himself in the House of Lords.

Despite his limp and yo-yo dieting, the dark and handsome poet already had a reputation as a dashing lover.

The next few years were some of his most productive with many of his works, like She Walks in Beauty, today considered cornerstones of the Romantic Movement. But his time in England was short lived.

After several high society, tumultuous affairs and debts mounting, Byron married Annabella Milbanke.

It was considered a good match, but their marriage was dogged by his infidelity and rumours of an incestuous relationship with his halfsister, Augusta Leigh, who had given birth to a daughter rumoured to be his.

Byron and his wife sensationally separated in 1816. She stayed in England with their infant daughter Ada, and he went into exile abroad,

living in Switzerland with his fellow poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Years of wandering – including fathering an illegitimate daughter who died in infancy - and numerous affairs across Italy, eventually led to him back to politics.

In 1824, Byron threw his support behind the Greek independence movement against the Ottoman Empire, even selling off some of land and assets to raise capital for the cause. His wealth, celebrity and nobility helped garner support for the Greeks, and huge publicity.

The same year he took control of part of the rebel army, defending against the Turks’ attacks, but fell ill with a fever and never recovered, dying on April 19 in Missolonghi, western Greece. He was 36.

Today, he is still celebrated in Greece as a national hero and across the world as one of the original tortured poets and true Romantics – a far cry from the lacklustre pupil from a small boarding school East Dulwich his Harrow headmaster recalled.

Nominations open for our Southwark Blue Plaques Plaques

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk For the past sixteen years the News is proud to have been one of the founders of the Blue Plaque scheme here in Southwark and nominations are now open for this year.

Some of the lesser known facts about Byron…

Yo-yo dieter Overweight in youth, Byron was an early adopter of the fad diet. At one point he drank only vinegar, later moving onto the “mashed potato” diet. He also tried alternate binging and starvation, and chewing a type of gum to stave off hunger pangs.

Pet bear A life-long animal lover, Byron kept a “tame” bear in his rooms at Cambridge after being told dogs were not allowed. While exiled in

Italy he collected a menagerie of animals in his palazzo.

His great friend, the poet Shelley, wrote the home had “ten horses, eight enormous dogs, three monkey, five cats, an eagle, a crow and a falcon,” he went on to describe how he “just met on the grand staircase give peacocks, two guinea hens and an Egyptian crane”.

Skull fetish He was also fascinated by the dead, and regularly used his collection

of skulls as drinking goblets. His family seat, the imposing Newstead Abbey, was said to be haunted and, hamming it up, he kept a coffin at one end of the great dining room where he practised shooting.

Daughter became the first coder Byron’s wife was so appalled by her husband’s descent that after he left England he was refused contact with their daughter Ada. Encouraged into the sciences, in an effort to mould her away from

her father’s path, Ada went on to develop the prototype calculator and computer, the Difference Engine and Analytical Engine. Regarded as writing the world’s first algorithm, and therefore the first ever computer programmer, the programming language ADA was named after her..

Ada died at 36, like her father, and his father before him. Although she never knew Byron she was buried next to him at her request after years struggling with addiction and scandalous affairs of her own.

After nominations have been vetted and checked, a shortlist will be drawn up for people to vote on.

The scheme came about after the News and Southwark Heritage Association tried to find a way around English Heritage’s strict criteria, that a building must be standing and the person dead for them to qualify.

The latter was not really a problem, but the idea that so much of our rich heritage could not be recognised because a building was no longer there was not acceptable to us. Much of our physical heritage was destroyed in the Blitz, but it is perhaps the 1960s and ‘70s architects who did the most damage.

So, we invited Southwark Council to join us in drawing up our own Blue Plaques and getting local people to vote. There are now well over 50 blue plaques across the borough.

Our scheme has allowed the likes of Charles Dickens, Geoffrey Chaucer and Charlie Chaplin to be honoured on our streets, but also less wellknown historical figures like Phyllis Pearsall, the inventor of the A-Z. In 1935, Pearsall couldn’t find her way to a party in Belgravia so decided to make a completely new map of London, which she did by getting up at 5am each morning and walking every one of London’s 23,000 streets – a distance of 3,000 miles. The result was the A-Z, the first street atlas of London.

Dulwich Village’s Grafton Dance Hall, the historic home of ballroom dancing in London once owned by ballroom supremoes Bob Burgess and Doreen Freeman waltzed to victory in to secure the latest blue plaque.

The dance studio on Village Way won the public vote by a landslide – and more than a thousand votes ahead of runner-up Rotherhithe born entertainer Max Bygraves.

Backed by stars from TV hit show ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ an announcement on the unveiling of the latest plaque is due to be announced.

Croydon boss responds to Fisher claims

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk AFC CROYDON manager Kevin Rayner has responded to an allegation made by Fisher of racist abuse aimed at their team – saying the claim “doesn’t sit well”.

The controversy relates to the SCEFL Premier Division fixture between the clubs on December 28 when Fisher manager Ajay Ashanike made the decision to take his players off the pitch after the alleged abuse.

The referee abandoned the game in the 58th minute.

Rayner said the player in his side accused of making an offensive remark is “upset at the allegations against him and the club”.

Rayner added “we totally condemn racism” and that the Croydon squad is a “diverse” one “representative of the area we are based in”.

Croydon were winning 3-1 when the game was abandoned.

“I’ve seen a number of reports and stories on social media concerning our game last week with Fisher FC,” Rayner said.

“Myself and the players are frustrated that we can’t say too much as The FA will investigate the matter fully.

“However, I would like to say that it doesn’t sit well and I’m not happy that our club and any member of our first-team squad are accused with any alleged racism.

“For the record, everyone at the club is proud of our teams and from the under10s right through to the first team our footballers are representative of the area we are based in, and the first-team squad is a team of local players.

“The player accused of the alleged racism is black as were the majority of our starting eleven from our diverse squad on the day.

“We totally condemn racism and [it] is something we will continue to fight against at our club.

“The player accused is upset at the allegations against him and the club. We will wait to see how The FA deal with the situation. I can’t comment any further on this matter.

“It’s sad that a good game of football had to end that way.”

Fisher released a statement after the

December fixture. It read: “In the 58th minute of Saturday’s Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division game against AFC Croydon Athletic, a member of the opposing team made a racially abusive comment towards the Fisher team.

“As a result of this comment, which was immediately brought to the match officials’ attention, the players and management team were united in taking a stand by leaving the field of play.

“As a result, the match was abandoned with the score standing at 3-1 to AFC Croydon Athletic.

“The players, management team and club are all in agreement that there was no option but to leave the field of play and the result of the match is unimportant in light of the abuse.”

Meanwhile, Fisher were back in league action at St Paul’s last Saturday.

In front of an attendance of 206 they lost 3-0 to Tunbridge Wells. Clark Woodcock and a double from Jason Thompson gave the visitors the three points.

Fisher are fifteenth in the table and host Hollands & Blair this Saturday.

Croydon started the second half as they did the first as they applied pressure to the Stansfeld defence trying to force an equaliser, but they never troubled Charlie Cottrell in the away goal.

Stansfeld gradually made the extra man count and they frustrated the home supporters as they controlled the game.

In the 64th minute, Hassan was put through again one-on-one and this time he curled home to double his side’s lead.

Croydon pulled a goal back in the 88th minute through Owen and piled on the pressure for the final few minutes but Stansfeld held on to win.

Stansfeld leapfrogged Croydon to go sixth in the table.

Meanwhile, Stansfeld Reserves lot 3-2 at home to Crockenhill last weekend.

The 3rd team also lost 3-2, at home to Drummond Athletic.

By Sports Reporter sport@southwarknews.co.uk STANSFELD CONTINUED their fine run of form in the SCEFL First Division by beating Croydon 2-1 away from home last weekend.

Jake Britnell and Ryan Hassan scored in each half before the hosts replied late on through Josh Owen.

Croydon came out fast, looking to try and dominate the play but Stansfeld quickly gained control.

The visitors created the first opening of the game when a lovely ball from Freddie Cray put Hassan through one-on-one with the opposing goalkeeper who made a good save.

Stansfeld remained on top and forced a succession of corners. Quick thinking from Joe Minter saw him play a short

Six-shooters Hamlet show no mercy First home league win since August for Gavin Rose’s side

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET won for the first time at home in the league since August in the most emphatic fashion as they hammered Braintree Town 6-0 last weekend.

Rabble supporters hadn’t seen their team collect three points at Champion Hill since August 10. It’s also the first time since then they have won back-to-back league games.

After their 3-0 victory at Hampton & Richmond Borough on New Year’s Day they could hardly have made a better start to 2020 and their trouncing of Braintree lifted them further clear of the relegation places.

They are only nine points off the playoffs but need to show that this mini-revival after such a difficult end to 2019 can be sustained into something more promising.

It was actually Braintree who almost opened the scoring and perhaps the contest would have turned out differently had Jordan Chiedozie’s header gone in rather than bounced off the crossbar in the third minute.

That was as good as it got for the visitors as Gavin Rose’s side went ahead in the sixth minute when Lionel Ainsworth crossed from the left and skipper Quade Taylor headed in to the delight of most of the 2,730 attendance.

Jeffrey Monakana had the next effort for the hosts from Ainsworth’s run and pass but his shot was blocked.

Monakana’s cross in the eighteenth minute almost reached Dominic Vose before the visitors broke forward and goalkeeper Charlie Grainger denied former 12th Man scheme Hamlet signing Rhys Murrell-Williamson.

Saskia Philp and Joe Gibson were on the mark for the visitors but it wasn’t enough to prevent an exit from the competition.

The Hamlet went ahead in the first half through Philp after Michaella Williams had engineered the chance from rightback.

Ashford didn’t take long to level as Alissa Down fired home from outside the box.

But Dulwich were back in front just before half-time and Philp was again involved as her high press from an Ashford goal-kick fashioned the chance.

Philp then fed Gibson who finished for her third goal in two games.

Hamlet goalkeeper Marie Louis kept her side ahead with a superb stop to deny Ashford.

But Ashford hit the away side with a double blow after the break when they equalised again after a scramble in the box from a corner and then took the lead for the first time in the contest through a

It didn’t take long for Dulwich to go two goals ahead and Ainsworth was yet again involved when he switched play to the right for Ben Chapman to cross to Shamir Mullings who scored his first goal for the club.

And Mullings had his second in the 28thminute when he latched on to a long ball forward from on-loan Millwall defender Jesse Debrah to finish.

Dylan Kearney – who was aiming to score in a fifth consecutive game – went close to a fourth and Taylor sent a volley wide as the Hamlet continued their attacking onslaught.

Dulwich made it 4-0 on the stroke of half-time when Kearney was fouled in the box and Monakana beat Iron goalkeeper Michael Johnson from twelve yards.

The Hamlet showed they were in no mood to let up after the break as they went about further boosting a goal difference that had been minus-1 before kick-off. But Johnson saved Chapman’s shot and then Kearney was denied.

Ainsworth almost got his second goal in two games before the Hamlet made it 5-0 ten minutes from time. It started with David Ijaha’s persistence in midfield as he won possession before finding another substitute, Danny Mills, and the striker ran through to beat Johnson with a composed finish.

The rout was completed in some style two minutes later when Monakana picked up the ball on the left before cutting infield and curling a superb shot into the top corner.

It was the Hamlet’s biggest win in the sixth tier.

Rose’s side travel to sixth-place Weymouth this Saturday. Kick-off at the Bob Lucas Stadium is 3pm.

Dulwich manager Ryan Dempsey emptied his bench to give his side fresh energy and the visitors levelled when Havana McElvaine’s corner came off an Ashford defender and went in.

Debrah was back at the Lions’ training ground in Bromley on Tuesday afternoon as their Professional Development League side defeated Colchester 1-0.

Connor Mahoney was the star of the show but early in the second half when the Exiles rallied it was again Bart Bialkowski that the Lions had to thank for keeping them ahead. The goalkeeper’s show reel of saves at the end of the season will be well worth watching.

Millwall had scored in the seventh minute through Matt Smith but hadn’t built on that lead. Understandable when you consider the heavy schedule over the festive and New Year period. Gary Rowett made six changes from the side that started against Luton on January 1 but only Jason McCarthy and Billy Mitchell had not been involved since Rowett took over.

Newport, who are fifteenth in League Two, hadn’t really been an attacking threat in the first half but then they seemed to realise where they were and had a proper go in the first ten minutes of the second period.

And they should have levelled. Millwall were still sleeping after their half-time break when Jamille Matt was suddenly through in the box with only Bialkowski to beat. But the goalkeeper quickly narrowed the angle to block. The ball broke to the one player the Lions wouldn’t have wanted it to. Padraig Amond had

scored in eight consecutive rounds of the competition and when the rebound dropped to him you would have put your house on him moving to within three of Stan Mortensen’s all-time record. But instead Amond dragged his effort from six yards into the near-post side-netting and Newport’s big chance was gone.

Tom Bradshaw came on for Smith and the Lions played with renewed purpose up front. In the 64th minute Mark O’Brien bundled over Jon Dadi Bodvarsson in the penalty area.

If any Millwall player needs a goal it’s Bodvarsson. He has gone the most minutes of any Championship striker this season without hitting the back of the net. His only goals in 20 games for the Lions came in their last cup fixture against Oxford in August. He got a chance later on that wasn’t easy at the near post, but the way he meekly went at the opportunity showed a lack of conviction and confidence.

That can’t be said about Connor Mahoney at the moment. He fired the penalty low inside former Millwall goalkeeper Tom King’s left-hand post to make it a goal and assist in consecutive games.

Mahoney produced the full repertoire of skills, elegantly going past Newport players, changing the direction of attacks by sweeping passes across the pitch, and crossing with his left and right foot.

Millwall’s opener came from his corner from the left as George Nurse swiped at the ball and missed it and Smith reacted

well to fire in a low shot past King.

Mahoney was also involved in Millwall’s third when he chipped a pass cleverly into the path of McCarthy who clipped a cross to the near post where Bradshaw brilliantly lofted the ball over King. It was a finish from a striker in such confident form, in contrast to Bodvarsson’s earlier effort.

This was a useful return to competitive action for McCarthy, who showed some good touches on the ball and sent in the cross that led to the penalty, even if he was understandably rusty and gave away possession cheaply a couple of times.

Millwall need back-up for Mahlon Romeo or someone to come in for him if he’s injured or suspended, and the hope is McCarthy’s injury problems are behind him.

Mitchell could also be satisfied with his performance. He’s never afraid to show for the ball and he’s neat and tidy when he has it. He has a good positional sense and awareness of what’s around him. Mitchell, though only eighteen, has probably moved past the time when he can benefit from under-23s football. Even a game against fourth-tier Newport is a step-up and he needs that competitive edge of a senior game to drive on his development. If Millwall can reinforce with some more experience in midfield in this transfer window then Mitchell could be allowed out on loan. He’s certainly good enough for at least League Two. Rowett will have learnt plenty from this outing. There are certainly some players who haven’t done enough and if they don’t leave this month are unlikely to survive a summer cull. But fourth round of this competition and seventh in the league means there is plenty of positive energy around at the start of 2020.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL DEFENDER James Brown is into the last six months of his contract – but he’s putting that concern to one side as he focuses on making a playing impact for the rest of this season.

Brown was picked out by Neil Harris as a player who could break through this campaign, before the 21-year-old rightback suffered a knee ligament injury in the second week of pre-season after a collision with Tom Elliott and was out for four months.

Brown came on as a late substitute in the 3-0 FA Cup win over Newport last Saturday – his first senior Millwall appearance in more than three years.

He has endured a number of frustrations in the meantime. He joined Scottish Premier League side Livingston in August 2018 and made full debut against Celtic at Parkhead before returning to Millwall within a month after the manager who signed him, Kenny Miller, left.

Brown then moved to Lincoln in January 2019 but couldn’t get into the side as the Imps raced towards the League Two title under the Cowley brothers.

But there is no bitterness on Brown’s part, despite his difficult spell.

“It’s been a frustrating year and a half, things haven’t really fallen into place, a couple of loans didn’t work out,” Brown told the News this week. “I’ve been close to playing a few times so it was nice to be

The midfielder’s 60th-minute strike gave Kevin Nugent’s ten-man team all three points, after Harvey Bradbury was shown a straight red card in the second half.

Fielding came through his first major test since tearing his quad on the opening day of the season against Preston.

Isaac Olaofe’s surge down the wing and cut-back allowed Skeffington score the only goal.

Striker Bradbury was given a red card for a foul on Ollie Sims.

Millwall skipper Pearce is one of the most vocal players in the dressing room and several players have commented on his leadership skills.

Pearce was also praised by his teammates and Lions fans for his reaction when he was subbed in the 42nd minute against Luton on New Year’s Day. Pearce returned to the bench for the second half where he was seen encouraging the side as they came back to win 3-1 after a poor first half.

Asked about Pearce’s influence on the pitch, Cooper said: “He’s got a big mouth!

“He definitely uses it to his advantage and you need that in the back-line. We all have to bring that to the team and he’s top notch at doing it.

“A lot of people can’t replicate that but he’s got it naturally and it’s a great thing to have.”

“It was a great set-up at Lincoln. They were top of the league and went nineteen games unbeaten. It didn’t work out but that’s the risk you take as a full-back, it’s not the easiest position to break into.

“But it was a good experience. I haven’t got a bad word to say about [the Cowleys] and I didn’t even play under them. They deserved the job they got at Huddersfield, they’re both really thorough and detailed.

You can tell they could go all the way to the top in management, they’re a really good pair together.

“Coming back in the summer my aim was to push Mahlon [Romeo] as the second choice and try and compete with him. Picking up the injury was tough to take and obviously after that the club needed cover and Jason McCarthy came in.

“You’re looking forward to coming back after being off for the summer and then in the second week you’re told you’re out for four months. It was a tough one to take mentally.

“The toughest part of being a footballer is being out injured. You see everyone else out training and you’re in the physio room for hours. It can be quite repetitive, quite boring, but you know you’ve got to do it.

The motivation of getting back out there keeps you going.”

Gary Rowett has shown he will give young players a chance, and Brown made sure to meet the boss after he took over from Harris.

“I spoke with him the first week that he was here, when a new manager comes in you need to know where you stand,” Brown said.

Sky take shine to Lions MILLWALL’S CHAMPIONSHIP London derby against Fulham at The Den has been chosen for live coverage on Sky Sports.

The fixture is scheduled for Wednesday, February 12 and the kick-off time of 7.45pm remains the same.

It will be the second Millwall game to be shown live on Sky Sports after the home fixture against West Bromwich Albion was moved to Sunday, February (kickoff 1.30pm).

Meanwhile the Lions’ fixture against Leeds United at Elland Road, which had been scheduled for 3pm on January 25, will be moved to a new date, to be confirmed.

Millwall instead face Sheffield United in the fourth round of the FA Cup on that Saturday.

Millwall already face seven league fixtures in 28 days in February.

“It was a good positive talk. The new manager came in with new ideas and a fresh philosophy and the boys are loving that.

“At the moment I’m biding my time, it’s obviously January so there could be a chance to go out or I might be staying here to compete. I have to wait and see, a lot of things can happen this month.

“It would be harder to get a League One club purely because of the amount of minutes I’ve played in the last year or so, it hasn’t been a lot.

“But I’m happy here, happy to push the other boys in the same position as me and see where it takes me.

“My contract is up in the summer and there are a lot of players in the same position as me. If you got too bogged down in that you’d end up taking your mind off what you needed to do.

“At the end of the day if you train well enough, if you show you can handle yourself in this environment and in training, and if you do get a chance to play, you can prove your worth and everything else takes care of itself.

“It’s obviously something in the back of your mind but I don’t dwell on it all. If I’m here next year then I’m here, if I’m not then I need to continue my career somewhere else.

“There is a pathway there and I think Billy [Mitchell] more than anyone has proven that. You wouldn’t tell he’s only eighteen just by looking at the way he’s played.

“The manager has reassured us if we can show it in training when we’re involved with the first team we’ll have a chance.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT says he will play a strong side when Sheffield United visit The Den in the fourth round of the FA Cup on January 25.

The Lions take on the Premier League side aiming to reach the fifth round for a second consecutive season. It’s the sixteenth time in the last eighteen draws Millwall have been at home.

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder made eleven changes to his side as they defeated non-league Fylde 2-1 in the third round.

Rowett made six changes for the 3-0 win over Newport last Saturday, but didn’t consider it a second-string side.

“I think we’ve only got a first team, we’ve not got enough players to class as reserves,” Rowett said. “Everyone who played against Newport, apart from Macca [Jason McCarthy] and Billy [Mitchell], have been first-team regulars this season and played plenty of games since we’ve come in.

“It will be the same thing, there might be two or three players that we need to give a breather to. It’s probably less likely because we’ve got fewer games coming up.

“Chris Wilder’s team have been doing really well and I think Chris will be looking at [changes]. With a cup game you always feel morally you have to give some players an opportunity. That’s difficult because does it look like you’re taking the cup less seriously than the other games?

“In general every team that played in the FA Cup [last weekend] would have made a couple of changes no matter who they are. Even if it’s a League One, League Two side, you’re giving players opportunities to stake a claim.

“It’s going to be a difficult game for us but I also think it’s a difficult game for Sheffield United. I’m looking forward to it.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BILLY MITCHELL believes he should be aiming for a League One or League Two club – if he goes out on loan this month.

Millwall are currently stretched in midfield with Ben Thompson and Ryan Leonard out injured, but hope to strengthen that area in January.

That would potentially open a route for Mitchell – who doesn’t turn nineteen until April – to go out on loan.

Mitchell made his senior competitive debut just after his eighteenth birthday last season when he came on as a substitute at Wigan.

He was handed his first start by former Lions boss Neil Harris in the second round of the EFL Cup at Oxford in August. Gary Rowett gave him his home debut when he got another 90 minutes under his belt in Millwall’s 3-0 win over Newport last Saturday.

Those experiences have whetted

his appetite and he would be open to a loan move this month.

“I’ve been training with the first team for a long time now and I believe I’m certainly capable of playing to a higher level. Under-23 standard can still be very impressive with first-team players coming down to gain fitness or minutes.

“It’s still a standard to be reckoned with, but I do really feel I need to kick on and play as many first-team games as I can, whether that be here at Millwall or out on loan at whatever standard, League One or League Two. “I’m just going to have to see what happens but I’m ready to make the next step. It’s a big change when you go on loan especially if you’re living away from home.

“In some ways I think that really helps you develop as a young man when you have to fend for yourself, cook, clean, take a lot of responsibility.

“And certainly the football, playing at a higher level when there’s stuff on the line week-in, week-out. It’s obviously benefitted Dan [Danny

McNamara] tremendously. That’s something that he’s noted to me and that’s something I want to experience as well.”

Mitchell showed on his Den debut last weekend he wasn’t afraid to demand possession. He believes it’s crucial to be “brave” on the ball.

“The gaffer really wants to play attractive football through the thirds but ultimately for us to make the right decisions,” Mitchell continued.

“If it’s right to go long into the forwards then so be it. If it’s right to play through midfield so be it.

“Against Newport he wanted us to pick up a lot of second balls and get the ball wide because we felt there were going to be opportunities for us to cross the ball and cause them problems, especially with our four attacking players.

“He wants us to get on the ball and try and dictate play as much as possible, move the ball quickly and try to break down teams that way.

“It’s all about being brave, you have to back yourself at the end of the day and try and make the right decisions.

Ultimately you’ve got a long career

ahead and are going to make mistakes, but you can’t shy away from trying to do the right thing.

“You have to try to get on the ball.

The gaffer told me before I went out there, ‘don’t worry about any mistakes you might make, just keep trying to get on the ball and show us what you’re made of’. I feel I did that.”

Mitchell also had words of advice from club skipper Alex Pearce.

Mitchell continued: “Pearcey’s a massive influence on the dressing room, he’s a great leader. He was really helpful for me in that game, being in my ear, telling me where to go. That certainly helps with your nerves on your home debut.

“He did speak to me before the game and said to me to compose myself and relax as I did in previous games in pre-season, at Oxford and in training. I felt that was helpful advice.

“All the other boys will tell you in their interviews, he’s certainly partly responsible for the standards we’re keeping and it’s yielded some really good results recently.”

“I think Stoke have gone back to their basic principles. They have a bit more shape to their team and have been

getting the ball into forward areas quicker.

“They’ve had mixed results but their results have picked up and they have a bit more stability now.

“They’ve got good players in their

team, and you have to look at Stoke as if you’re playing a top-six side away from home. It’ll be a difficult place to go.

“But if you look at our last four away games we’ll certainly have absolutely no fear. We’ll go there and see if we can put on another big performance.”

Lee Gregory has had an inconsistent season since leaving the Lions to join Stoke last summer.

Gregory – who was top-scorer in four of his five seasons with Millwall – didn’t find the net in his first eight games for his new side.

He has scored four goals in 23 appearances in all competitions this season, and is a player Rowett has known about for some time.

Rowett said: “I watched a lot of him in his early days at Halifax when [Jamie] Vardy was in that same team and Marc Roberts. Halifax had quite a few good players.

“He’s a player that I know all about though I don’t think he’s a player we ever came close to signing or anything.

He’s a good player.”

Millwall are without midfielders Ryan Leonard and Ben Thompson.

Goalkeeper Frank Fielding could return to the bench for the first time since the opening day after he played for the under-23s against Colchester on Monday.

Rowett has the option to revert to the 5-2-3 formation he has favoured away from home recently, as the Lions protect a four-match unbeaten record on the road.

“Steeley’s deputised for Bart really well. He’s a No.1 goalkeeper in his own right. We’ve probably got three No.1 goalkeepers at the club at the moment and of course something might have to give in terms of that.

“I’ve had a good chat with Steeley just to see what he was thinking. The

conversations I’ve had with him will stay private but I think ultimately to keep a 35-year-old goalkeeper on the bench happy is going to be very difficult.

“He’s going to want to play, and rightly so. You only go out on loan for game time so therefore, realistically, he’s going to go back at some point.

“At this level with the budget we’ve got you’d normally go with two [experienced goalkeepers] and a younger one. The only challenge we’ve got at the moment is making sure Frank is physically fit enough to play that No.2 role to start with and then compete with Bart. Frank’s a good keeper.

“What we would be a little bit mindful of is if he’s not fully fit then we’d be leaving ourselves a touch open. Of course there’s the emergency goalkeeper rule so you’re always going to be able to do that at least.

“It’s one where we still need the relevant cover.”

Rowett’s first game in charge of Millwall was against Stoke in October when goals from Ben Thompson and a Jed Wallace penalty sealed a 2-0 win.

Stoke had just two wins in their first fourteen league games and Nathan Jones was sacked five days after that defeat.

Since Michael O’Neill took over they have won five of their eleven Championship fixtures, including beating Sheffield Wednesday 3-2 and Huddersfield 5-2 either side of a 1-0 defeat to Fulham in their last three games.

Rowett is relieved to have a full week to prepare the squad after a hectic Christmas and New Year schedule.

Frank Fielding was injured on the opening day

Fielding has been out since the opening day of the season with a torn quad but has made his competitive comeback for the under-23s.

Steele, 35, joined on loan from Forest in August as back-up to Bart Bialkowski following Fielding’s injury.

Rowett spoke to Steele recently and believes the goalkeeper could seek firstteam football elsewhere. Steele is well down the pecking order at Forest but may look at another potential loan move.

Steele has played twice for the Lions, both appearances in the EFL Cup in August.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT hopes Bart Bialkowski will still be with Millwall beyond next summer.

Bialkowski is on a season-long loan from Ipswich, but the terms of the arrangement meant that his parent club could have accepted bids from other clubs for the Poland international - that clause has now expired.

Speaking on Tuesday, Rowett said: “It’s one where there’s a window for Ipswich to do something. If that window passes then he’s on loan with

us until the end of the season unless anything happens.

“Should the club be in a position to do something different than that then it’s a question down the line. At the minute, until we’re told anything by Ipswich, then it’s not really a massive issue.

“The player is happy and could see himself potentially staying here for longer. But again that’s something for the club to look at and decide and for both clubs to sort out rather than for me to get too involved in at this stage.”

Rowett said the recruitment department has a number of targets if a new goalkeeper is needed in this window.

“We have a list for every position,

a list of about six or seven players should injuries or anything else arise,” Rowett said.

“Those things are covered, that’s not necessarily a massive problem.

Would we like Bart to stay for the rest of the season? Of course we would.

Would we like him to stay longer? Yes, because his performances have been really good.

“But I don’t want to get into those details too much at the moment.”

Meanwhile Millwall are hoping to add at least two players to their squad this month. Rowett is an admirer of Jack Clarke, who returned to Tottenham after just one appearance this season at Leeds, the club that sold him to Spurs last summer for £10million.

Rowett said the Lions have “some good targets”.

“There are a lot of players out there that we can see might improve us in a different way and add to the group,” Rowett added.

“I’d love to give more information to everyone to keep them in the loop but it always sounds disrespectful when you’re talking about other teams’ players.

“We’ve got some good targets, some targets that are going to be difficult to do for different reasons. But our ambition is to bring a couple of players in that can make the team or the squad better.

“Whether we can manage to do that could come down to a lot of factors.”

Lions duo up for awards

The Lions won three, drew two and lost one of their league games last month, putting them within touching distance of sixth where they moved after their victory over Luton on New Year’s Day. Wallace scored two goals and provided two assists in six games, including a stunning free-kick to rescue a point against Neil Harris’ Cardiff.

Millwall defender back from loan

The 21-year-old right back joined on a season-long loan in the summer transfer window and made 23 appearances for the Exiles.

He was also called up to the Ireland under-21 squad and made his debut in a European Championship qualifier win in Armenia.

McNamara tweeted: “I would just like to say a massive thank you to Newport and the lads for the last six months and making my stay enjoyable.”
