Four members of a drug dealing gang based in Camberwell have been jailed after drugs with a street value of £15,000 were seized.

They were sentenced on Friday, December 13 after an investigation by the Met’s violent crime taskforce.

The gang first came to the police’s attention on March 6 of this year, when officers patrolling Comber Grove in SE5 stopped and searched a car and its driver, Michael Fahm.

The 25-year-old, from the same road, attempted to flee while being searched, but was successfully detained.

Officers found £800 in cash, class A drugs, and cannabis before he was released under investigation.

On June 20, police were about to search a property under warrant at Comber Grove when they noticed a car, registered and insured by Fahm, leaving the area.

After stopping the car and finding Fahm inside, they seized an iPhone with messages relating to supplying drugs.

A search at the address found £5,820 in cash and cocaine, ketamine and MDMA.

Messages on the iPhone linked three others to Fahm and the drug network.

Shahjan Ali, aged 32 (from Nelson Square, SE1) was another ringleader, with Fahm, who coordinated the supply.

They were supported by 26-year-old Omar Lawson, from Coleman Road in Camberwell, and Shakeel Dan-Othman, aged 22 from Beaconsfield Road in Walworth, who helped with delivery and resupply.

Fahm was sentenced to 45 months in prison after pleading guilty on July 26, to conspiracy to supply class A and class B drugs, two counts of possession of criminal property, five counts of possession with intent to supply and obstruction of a drugs search.

Dan-Othman was sentenced to 24 months in prison after pleading guilty on November 8 to conspiracy to supply class A and class B drugs, and possession of criminal property.

Lawson, was handed 23 months’ imprisonment. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply class A and class B drugs on September 6.

Ali was given 32 months in prison. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply class A and B drugs, and possession of cannabis on August 6.

Aaron McKenzie, aged 25, from Peckham Park Road, appeared in court via video link to enter his plea on Friday, December 20.

Pregnant Kelly died after being attacked in her home in Thornton Heath on June 29.

Her unborn son was delivered by paramedics but died in hospital four days later. Her family named him Riley.

McKenzie has been remanded in custody with a trial expected to start at the Old Bailey in June next year.

Ilderton Primary plants green barrier

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Ilderton Primary has become the latest in the borough to plant a pollution barrier ‘green screen’ of ivy.

The playground is especially vulnerable to harmful pollutants as it at a lower level than the road.

The school has now planted ivy, evergreen trees and extra flowerbeds around the school’s perimeter.

Plants catch particles from car exhaust fumes in their leaves, forming a natural barrier than

improves air quality.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, from Southwark Council, who is responsible for its work protecting the environment in the borough said: “There is growing evidence that projects like green screens around our schools can capture and reduce air pollution before it gets into our playgrounds, in this case by up to 50 per cent.

“I was really pleased to see the work and join the children from the school council to help plant up the new flower beds.”

Other schools to plant green screens include Goose Green Primary, in East Dulwich, also on a busy main road.

Boy thrown from Tate Modern starts to speak

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Hundreds of tributes poured in for Dulwich Hamlet Football Club superfan ‘Dulwich Mishi’ Morath after he passed away last month.

of DHFC, Streatham Ice Hockey and Southwark News; known by many readers and fans for his often cantankerous but always amusing take on his team’s chances.

A larger-than-life character, he took great joy performing his poetry, his library work at the Blue at John Harvard Library, and dining on the ever-favourite pie ‘n’ mash.

Many News readers will also remember his contributions to our letters page.

Mishi had battled health problems including a heart attack in February but had made a recovery, and only in the last few weeks tweeted how happy he was to be out of hospital and back at work.

In a statement from the club, its directors said: “It is hard to put into words how loved Mishi was, and will remain to be. He is undoubtedly a huge part in our recent success and a huge part of the culture of the club.

Our loss is immeasurable but we will always remember you for all the amazing things you did.”

Others described him as a “club

legend”, “a renaissance man”, one of non-league’s “biggest characters”, “everything great about non-league epitomised in one person” who “loved Dulwich Hamlet with every fibre of his being” and “a prince among men”, who will be “never, ever forgotten at this club”.

A minute’s silence was held at the Boxing Day match for the librarian and poet who dedicated his life to DHFC. In a statement on behalf of the Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust published on December 20, Mark Scoltock said: “How can you put into words what Mishi meant to everyone connected to this football club, it is an impossible task.

“It is very difficult not to be sad at a time like this. Personally, I am so proud to have shared, be it a small number of years, not only a spot on the terraces with Mishi but have had the pleasure of being in his company for the many special occasions Dulwich Hamlet has seen in recent years.

“There are too many occasions to mention, the most recent being that not only did he finally get to see us on

the telly, he appeared on it!

“We may have now been on TV, but Mishi I am going to ignore your ‘friendly advice’ that I need to edit my “Dulwich Hamlet Will NOT be televised” stencil on the Greendale side of the main stand.

“In his many roles at the club over the years, including serving on the trust board, his tireless work has been instrumental and inspired many others, like myself, to volunteer and help create the amazing community football club we are so proud of today.

“Next time you step into Champion Hill look around you; there is no more fitting legacy for a great man.

“Finally, myself and the rest of the Supporters’ Trust Board’s thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time.

“Rest in Peace our good friend.”

The much-loved Hamlet supporter was trending at number 10 on twitter later the same day after hundreds of fellow rabble rousers and non-league supporters Mishi had met over the years shared their condolences.

The little boy who was thrown from the Tate Modern’s viewing platform was beginning to speak again in time for Christmas.

The six-year-old was hurled 100 feet from the Tate in August by teenager Jonty Bravery, suffering severe injuries in the process.

Bravery, 18, admitted attempted murder, and had told police he preplanned the attempted killing because he wanted to be on the TV. But in their latest update on their boy’s condition, the doting parents “the little knight” said he is just beginning to speak again in time for Christmas.

“We have very good news to share with you. Our little knight begins to speak!” they said.

“He pronounces one syllable after another, not all of them, and most of the time we have to guess what he means but it’s better and better. It’s a wonderful progress!”

“Thank you, all of you. We are very grateful for what you are doing for us.

“Thank you also to keep us strong with all your kind messages. You can’t imagine how much it is helpful.”

Over £150,000 has been raised by strangers to help the boy’s recovery.

Jail for three after brutal ‘cuckooing’ attack

Man beaten, burnt and forced inside dog cage as attackers blamed him for drugs going missing from his flat

Three men who beat, burned and even made their victim get inside a dog cage during a brutal attack in Walworth have been jailed.

Police received a series of calls in the evening of July 24, 2018, from concerned members of the public who could see a man on a balcony at an address in Walworth shouting for help.

When officers arrived, they found the 49-year-old victim inside a flat described as “completely ransacked”.

The victim told them he had been attacked for several hours by three

men, all strangers, but it later emerged they had been “cuckooing” - using his home to store drugs.

In hospital, the man was found to have suffered a fractured jaw and burns to his arm.

The trio had beaten him with an aerosol can, which was also used as a makeshift flamethrower on him.

They also stubbed out cigarettes on him and forced him into a dog cage.

His three attackers were identified after a set of car keys were discovered at the crime scene and traced to Dennis Camara, aged 25, from Aylton Estate in Renforth Street, Rotherhithe.

He had reported the vehicle stolen

the day before the attack, which police say was an attempt to distance himself from the crime scene.

Forensic evidence then linked 24-year-old Alan Niango to the attack.

He handed himself into police on July 30, 2018.

Camara handed himself into police later the same day.

The third suspect, Axel Harvey, aged 25, from Arnside Street in Walworth, was identified and arrested in August last year.

Further inquiries established that they had been using the victim’s address to store suspected class A drugs, and then blamed him when they

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has been forced to deny it does not support bludgeoning foxes after becoming embroiled in a twitter storm when a lawyer tweeted he had clubbed a fox to death.

Jolyon Maugham QC, a prominent lawyer and director of the Good Law Project, who has challenged Brexit and Boris Johnson’s suspension of parliament, tweeted on December 26: “already this morning I have killed a fox with a baseball bat. How’s your Boxing Day going?”

After thousands replied sharing their horror, the RSPCA confirmed it was “made aware” and “looking into it”,

saying the tweet was “distressing”.

Maugham, whom the News understands lives near Elephant and Castle, was initially unrepentant.

He responded to one person who asked “were you in your dressing gown or on a horse?” with the pithy: “I was in a kimono”.

The lawyer went on to say he had killed the fox after it got caught up in the protective netting around the chicken coop in his central London back garden, and “wasn’t sure what else to do”.

“No one should relish killing animals and I certainly didn’t. But if you haven’t been up close to a large trapped fox perhaps reserve judgement”, he later explained.

Maugham then apologised to anyone

upset by his tweet, saying: “My chickens were very distressed by the fox - both before and after I’d dispatched it - and I wanted it out of the way quickly.”

Bermondsey MP Neil Coyle waded into the row, saying he had raised the issue of how to control foxes “several times” with Southwark Council on behalf of constituents concerned by the methods used to kill them.

Coyle said Southwark Council’s advice was still that “clubbing is the only legally permissible means of killing a fox”.

But Southwark Council’s cabinet member for the environment issued a strongly worded rebuttal to Coyle’s tweet, saying that as protected animals not categorised as pests, the advice is always to contact The Fox Project, a charity or the RSPCA. “For the removal of any doubt, Southwark Council’s policy towards foxes does not in any way support bludgeoning them to death,” Cllr Richard Livingstone said.

“Cuckooing” is a form of increasingly common drug crime, where dealers take over a vulnerable person’s home to use it to store and sometimes deal drugs.

The man had been too afraid to tell police he knew his attackers.

Camara, Niango and Harvey were found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and false imprisonment at Inner London Crown Court in November.

All three have now been jailed.

Niango and Harvey were handed ten years for GBH and seven years for false imprisonment, to run concurrently.

Camara was given nine years in prison for GBH and six years for false imprisonment.

Detective Constable Sam Cafferty said: “The victim was absolutely terrified and in fear of his life during the incident and is still struggling to come to terms with what happened to him.

“He has sleepless nights and he is scared whenever he is out in public.

“Camara, Niango and Harvey carried out their cowardly and vicious attack over several hours, not only inflicting serious injuries but humiliating the victim as well. Now they will spend time behind bars.”

Elephant legal challenge rejected

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A legal challenge from campaigners hoping to overturn Delancey’s Elephant and Castle regeneration project was rejected by the High Court just before Christmas.

The application to overturn the decision was made by Jerry Flynn on behalf of the 35 per cent campaign, who told the News: “We are naturally disappointed that the court has not found in our favour.

“We will look at the decision and discuss it with our lawyers before deciding the campaign’s next course of action.”

The hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice were held on October 22 and 23, and decision announced on Friday, December 20.

Campaigners hoped the judge would reject planning permission for the scheme by developer Delancey, granted

by Southwark Council and given the green light by the London Mayor.

The shopping centre demolition was approved on July 10, two years and three deferrals after first being put to the council’s planning committee. More than a thousand objections had been lodged.

The key issues are the number of social rent homes and affordable homes in the scheme and deal for current traders.

Although the scheme includes nearly a thousand homes, only 116 will be at social rent.

The News understands an appeal can be launched but, regardless of the decision, lobbying from the Up the Elephant coalition is expected to continue.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Actors Carey Mulligan, David Bradley, Anne-Marie Duff and Paul Ready joined 400 guests at Southwark Cathedral for the Alzheimer’s Society annual Christmas carol concert on Thursday, December 19.

Mulligan hosted the event in memory of her beloved grandmother who had dementia. She said: “I have had the privilege of being an Ambassador for Alzheimer’s Society for a number of years now. And I know just how enormously dedicated the charity is to helping thousands of people with dementia every year.

“People living with dementia and their families often feel alone and don’t have enough support.

“I’m proud to see the developments in research, but while we power progress for a cure, everyone affected by dementia must have somewhere to turn to for help and advice.

“Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Helpline is a lifeline to so many people, but it can only cope with increasing demand through donations, which is why I’m honoured to be a part of such a fabulous event this evening.

“Dementia is heart-breaking, but it is possible to live well with dementia.

Local shoppers donate meals to food banks

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Thousands of meals have been donated to food banks in Southwark by Tesco shoppers.

More than 2,600 meals were donated to the Trussell Trust and FareShare during November's threeday Tesco Food Collection in the run up to Christmas.

Tesco Director Christine Heffernan thanked customers for their donations.

“On my visits to stores during the Collection I was taken aback by the generosity of our customers,” she said.

“I would like to thank all those who

donated and we will be doing our bit by topping up all the donations by 20 per cent."

The Trussell Trust’s Chief Executive Emma Revie also shared her delight at the borough's generosity.

“Food banks up and down the country could not do what they do without the incredible support of the public and their loyal volunteers who work tirelessly to help people when they need support the most,” she said.

"An emergency food parcel, listening ear and compassionate, practical advice at the food bank can make a real difference when someone is facing a crisis. Any donations help make that difference.”

estate’s fury over gp surgery axe

Health body has not looked for new provider

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Brandon estate residents have been left outraged at the news that their only GP surgery is set to close by the end of March when its GP retires.

At a packed public meeting held at Rachel Leigh Community Hall before Christmas, on Saturday, December 21, attended by the News, angry patients challenged the decision.

One heckler shouted “it’s social cleansing”, while another said “it’s all about the money”.

They were addressed by local MP Neil Coyle and Southwark councillors, who are lobbying to keep the surgery open, and Dr Jonty Heaversedge, the Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group’s representative.

Cllr Eleanor Kerslake said: “Since letters went out asking people to re-register, every day people have contacted us councillors about it.”

Patients have been told the practice is likely to close by the end of March, after 43 years serving the community, and they will need to register elsewhere.

After just one week a petition against the closure was signed by 1,300 people.

The CCG, which is the body which commissions health services for the entire borough, did not choose to close the surgery but has decided not proactively to seek a new practice to take it over, saying the current set up is unsustainable.

Although this surgery is within a council-owned building, the local authority has no say over the decision.

Dr Heaversedge said the key issue with finding another GP to take over the practice was that it had a

comparatively small list of patients – around 3,000 – which made it less financially viable and it was unlikely a provider would be interested. Most practices have at least 6,000 patients now, he explained.

But so far, he admitted, the CCG had not taken any proactive steps to find a potential doctor or group to take over the surgery, choosing not to put out to tender.

“A committee was put together to look at if they can find a GP practice to take on Maddock Way, and they found it was “highly unlikely” but we need to do more analysis.”

MP Neil Coyle addressed the meeting, saying the CCG had known current GP Dr Sinha was due to retire for six months but had failed to act.

“The CCG has to consider outcomes for patients, and I’m not convinced they have taken that on in this decision,” he said.

Heaversedge’s denial of this claim – “I do not know that we have known about this for six months” - was rubbished by Coyle, who pointed out that they knew his age and retirement date.

Key points of contention were the ongoing serious youth violence on the estate and how it has affected patients’ mental health, and the fact nearby surgeries have waiting lists for non-emergency appointments of up to four weeks.

Residents were also angry that new healthcare provision was being included in the redevelopment on

Manor Place, near Elephant and Castle, while they were set to lose out.

“Three thousand patients is not enough money, that is why they want six thousand patients. It’s is all about the money”, claimed one.

Another asked: “Why are they building a new one at Manor Place and not keeping this one open? Because they want to build luxury flats and a new medical centre for posh people”.

Another angry resident cried out shortly after: “if it ain’t broken don’t fix it!”

One woman said the money being spent on the estate was going into the wrong places: “£70,000 [the council] are spending on the Jack Hobbs Club, what are you doing there? No one is using it!”

After a request to comment from the News, a Southwark CCG spokesperson said: “We are committed to continuing to listen to patients’ concerns and exploring all possible options to address these, the CCG has hosted and attended a number of events during the past two weeks to ensure that this happens. “ The spokesperson added: “In the meantime, it is important that patients understand that they will need to register themselves with a new practice; we can provide support for patients who need assistance with this, and are working with the practice to identify patients who are frail or less mobile.”

Another public meeting will be held on January 28.

But the gift was rejected by the illustrious school’s head, Dr Joe Spence, who said although he was grateful to all donors, they were unable to accept gifts with ethnic or religious caveats.

He told another newspaper: “Bursaries are an engine of social mobility and they should be available to all who pass our entrance examinations, irrespective of their background.”

There are also fears the conditions

would contravene equality laws. A similar offer to Winchester College was also declined on similar grounds.

The News understands the fund for Dulwich College was intended to be nearly half a million, and that Sir Bryan benefitted from a scholarship during his time at the school.

Trevor Phillips, the former chairman of the equality and human rights commission, said the decision smacked of a “lethal cocktail of intervened snobbery, racial victimhood and liberal guilt”, describing white boys as “today’s educational left-behinds”.

The visibly emotional MP spoke in parliament in July how at her lowest his mum set fire to the house to keep him and his siblings warm, and that his halfbrother was taken into care and formally adopted as her mental health worsened.

He wants the Mental Health Act amended so patients and their families to have more say in treatment options, and is concerned that a rise in detentions shows that the system is failing to intervene early enough.

Despite a poor national performance, Labour held onto its three seats in the borough with Bermondsey and Old Southwark’s Neil Coyle holding onto his seat despite the Liberal Democrat candidate being, at one point, the bookies’ favourite. Coyle even increased his majority by more than 3,000 new votes.

Camberwell and Peckham and Dulwich and West Norwood continued the Labour landslide, though Green Party co-leader Jonathan Bartley put up a good fight, gaining the party a 14 per cent swing – the biggest in the county- no doubt helped by the Lib Dems stepping aside.

Coyle predicted Corbyn’s leadership would fail to win over voters. After the results, he said Corbyn should stand down immediately: “No leader should stay on after such a catastrophic defeat. Every single leader in our

After the Lib Dems’ bitter election disappointment Simon Hughes was one of the most high-profile ex MPs to criticise Jo Swinson’s election strategy.

In comments he later distanced himself from. culture” after they insisted on fighting every seat, including those where defectors like Chukka Umunna were standing, where the Tories managed to leaprfrog the split left- of-centre vote.

Even Ali, however, was prepared to admit that given the Lib Dems new pro-EU raison d’etre, losing to Neil Coyle, a firm Remainer, wasn’t such a bad thing and said despite failing to take back Hughes’ old seat the party wasn’t going anywhere.

Nationally the Tories gained a majority of 80 seats, with gains across former Labour heartlands in England and Wales.

In total, the Conservatives now have 365 seats in parliament, with Labour just 203.

TERRORISM AT LONDON BRIDGE

josh@southwarknews.co.uk 2019 was the year that horror came back to London Bridge.

Only two years on from the devastating attack of June 2017, which claimed the lives of eight innocent victims, terror

once more was seen in Southwark.

On Friday, November 29, police were called to reports of a stabbing at Fishmonger’s Hall on the north side of the bridge at around 2pm.

This, it quickly transpired, was a terrorist attack.

Killer Usman Khan had attended a

prisoners’ rehabilitation conference run by the University of Cambridge at the hall, and stabbed two of those involved in running it.

The two victims, Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones, sadly died of their injuries.

Three others were injured.

Heroic members of the public chased

Two Labour councillors had the whip removed after defying the Labour Group and voting in favour of a Liberal Democrat motion at council assembly in support of a people’s vote on Brexit.

The vote, which had been held in November 2018, led to Eleanor Kerslake and James Coldwell being disciplined by the party, with Coldwell later resigning from Labour and becoming an independent.

In July, Labour then made a U-turn and supported a second referendum on the final deal; described by the Southwark Lib Dem leader as “too little, too late and fundamentally too-faced”.

Killer fatally stabs two, just two years on from Borough Market murders Khan out of the building – one wielding a narwhal’s tusk grabbed from the wall, another a long pole, a third a fire extinguisher.

Their actions meant that the killer, wearing what was later discovered to be a dummy suicide vest, could be restrained.

Armed police then shot him dead.

Questions in the aftermath were raised as to how Khan, a convicted terrorist, could be walking the streets.

The 28-year-old had been jailed in 2012 for his role in a terror cell centred in Stoke-on-Trent, and was released on licence in December 2018.

Khan had been part of an eight-strong group who had plotted, among other things, to bomb the stock exchange and to establish jihadi training camps.

The trial judge thought Khan so dangerous that he was handed an indeterminate sentence – but this was overturned at the Court of Appeal, ultimately leading to Khan being allowed out while wearing a tag.

Following the attack, moving pictures of the victims began to emerge too. Jack Merritt, named by his father as the first victim of the attack, was a vociferous proponent of criminal justice reform.

Tragically the 25-year-old was killed by one of the people he had done so much to help.

Harriet Harman’s bid to become the next speaker of the House of Commons may have proved unsuccessful, but her reformist agenda has been put to good use elsewhere, writes Katherine Johnston...

As chair of the parliamentary human rights joint committee she highlighted the scandal of autistic children being forcibly held in secure mental health units across the country, and lobbied for mothers convicted of non-violent offences to be spared jail.

In September she forced Southwark CCG to backtrack on an IVF policy that barred single woman and couples not cohabitating.

And she has spearheaded a campaign to end the ‘rough sex’ defence for murder by amending the new domestic abuse bill.

In the wake of his murder, the Merritt family described their son as “our beautiful talented boy,” who “lit up our lives and the lives of his many friends and colleagues.”

A political row promptly broke out over tougher sentencing of convicted terrorists. This, said the Merritt family, would have gone against everything Jack had stood for.

Emotional tributes were also paid to victim, Saskia Jones, who had worked alongside Jack at the Learning Together conference.

The 23-year-old had hopes of joining the police graduate scheme, and wanted especially to focus on victim support.

The Jones family said this was typical of Saskia’s character.

“Saskia was funny, kind, positive influence at the centre of many people’s lives,” said the family in a heart-breaking statement following the attack.

“She was intent on living life to the full and had a wonderful thirst for knowledge, enabling her to be the best she could be.”

As the New Year’s Honour’s List was due to be released, speculation had abounded that the heroes of the attack could receive bravery awards, as those involved in the 2017 attack had done.

As the News has reported, Roy Larner, dubbed the Lion of London Bridge, has called for those involved in tackling Khan to be given recognitions.

But as the List was drawn up in advance of November’s attack, those brave civilians who risked their lives to stop Khan have not yet been given formal recognition for their courage.

yet more heating misery

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Aylesbury residents were left furious after receiving a rebate of two pounds in August of this year after months of heating and hot water outages.

The princely sum was described as “beyond a joke” by one 61-year-old, who has lived in Gayhurst block for 31 years, who was left without heating and hot water from December 17 to 31, 2018.

Southwark Council leader Peter John defended the paltry sum, saying the £2 payments were commensurate with “short outages” and the “low cost” district heating system.

As the News reported, the local authority had to pay out an incredible £300,000 after a disastrous start to January 2019, when both the Aylesbury and Brandon estate residents were left freezing and unable to shower at home.

But only the worst affected have been able to claim compensation for the problems caused by creaking boilers and long-running design problems.

In Aylesbury many of those

affected are living in temporary accommodation. In one shocking case, in February a newborn baby was brought back from hospital into a flat without heating or hot water The new mum, a private renter, told the News she “jumped at the chance” to spend an extra night in hospital, especially as she was recovering from a chest infection.

Their flat in Taplow House was being kept warm with fan heaters.

“It has been really stressful, everything takes longer, changing nappies, washing,” she said.

“I am trying to learn how to breastfeed, I’ve got stitches, and I’m having to decide where to sleep with her each night and taking the temperature every few hours to make sure it’s warm enough.

On top of the usual leaks, an underground pipe on Thurlow Street burst during a freeze in January, causing havoc.

The council had spent four million on preventative maintenance to try to stop breakdowns, including £500,000 in the 12 months beforehand.

Meanwhile on the Brandon Estate, 400 residents vented their anger at a public meeting in February after months of no heating and hot water resulted in an offer of just £100 in compensation, and leaseholders reacted to the news that £400 extra in heating costs were being added to service charge bills.

In another shocking case, a terminally ill father, suffering from motor neurone disease, spent seven days with barely functioning heating and hot water in his Peckham home in February – three months after the same problem in October 2018.

After intervention from the News, energy supplier EDF and Southwark Council promised to make sure he would not be “out of pocket” while using fan heaters.

District heating problems aren’t set to be solved any time soon – with fixes set to come at huge cost.

In July we revealed that the communal boiler systems, which serve around 17,000 homes, are believed to need around £350 million of investment over the next 40 years.

Challenging year for boozers

EVER-CHANGING SOUTHWARK

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Just before Christmas Up the Elephant campaigners found out their last-ditch legal challenge to Delancey’s regeneration plans for Elephant and Castle shopping centre had been rejected by a high court judge.

They are now considering whether to appeal the decision, or continue lobbying Delancey directly over the key sticking points – just 116 homes for social rent out of nearly a thousand, and a better deal for existing traders who will be displaced by the now much-delayed demolition.

Across the borough huge new housing and ‘town centre’ schemes continued apace.

Plans for 20,000 homes on Old Kent Road edged closer, leading to fears the area’s remaining industry and heritage could be completely wiped out.

In October, the News reported there are at least 21 historically significant, at risk buildings in the development’s boundary, without any formal protections, including an old Ambulance Station.

Meanwhile, the Bakerloo Line Extension hangs in the balance, as a public consultation closed shortly

josh@southwarknews.co.uk The past year has been challenging for the borough’s boozers, with pub protest frequently making its way into the pages of the News.

Long-standing publicans of the China Hall on Rotherhithe’s Lower Road, Mick and Linda Norris, lost their battle to keep their pub and home after more than three decades.

The lease of the historic pub had been sold to the off-shore developer Hamna Wakaf Ltd, which the couple said demanded an exorbitant amount to renew the lease – forcing the pair out of their livelihoods.

The developer later submitted plans for flats on the site, but these have so far been rejected, leaving the pub standing empty.

A successful community battle was won this year, however, against Hamna Wakaf which owns the lease to the former Old Justice pub on nearby Bermondsey Wall East.

Campaigners Darren Chandler and Richard O’Shea launched a bid to get the boozer up-and-running as a cooperative

before Christmas. In September, TfL ruled out a Bricklayers Arms station, but there are still two Old Kent Road stops planned, which could be named Old Kent Road, Asylum, Burgess Park or, in a suggestion by News readers, Dun Cow. In October, we reported that the £3.3 billion Canada Water masterplan development had been unanimously approved by Southwark’s councillors.

The biggest in the borough’s history, it is set to create 3,000 new homes, up to 20,000 new jobs and a new leisure centre, but objectors say the Jubilee Line can’t cope with more overcrowding.

Bu the end of November, they were taking a leaf out of Up the Elephant’s book to raise thousands for a legal challenge to developer British Land if the scheme wasn’t rejected by London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Whether pro or against the schemes in their current form, housing continues to be the biggest challenge faced by Southwark, with right-t-buy losses and the huge cost of land leading the council in a bind.

In January last year we reported how the council was stuck renting back its former council homes, to use as temporary accommodation, to the tune of £2 million a year. in July.

They won a significant victory, after the developer backed down over unauthorised alternations it had made to the bar of the pub, the site of Paul McCartney’s music video for No More Lonely Nights.

Other boozer battles have been less successful. Julie O’Sullivan, who had been the popular landlady of the Queen Victoria pub on Southwark Park Road, was forced to step down from the position in February when the brewery brought the lease back in-house.

Ms O’Sullivan said she thought it was due to changes in the law which would allow publicans to buy their own beers.

Meanwhile, a more unusual pub protest came in December.

Elliot Swift, a former manager of the Two Bridges on Tooley Street, took to standing outside his own former workplace with a protest sign in a bitter row with Heineken.

He was eventually forced to give up his protest, despite alleging that he and his family would be made homeless over Christmas.

TACKLING CRIME A TOP PRIORITY IN 2019

The Brandon put on a fantastic display at its summer party, and a community rallied round to support the hundreds affected by heating and hot water outages including elderly and vulnerable tenants. And many other estates followed suit with summer parties and community events.

It was a bitter blow, amid the positivity, to see more heartbreak when Clinton Evbota was murdered in October, just metres away from where Siddique Kamara and Rhyhiem Barton had been killed last year.

Their frustration was even more palpable after it emerged a children’s holiday club and mother and toddler group had been forced to move its base from the Brandon over funding

shortages.

In April, we reported that nearly 480 patients had been treated at King’s for stab or gunshot wounds in one year.

As 2019 draws to a close, 141 have been murdered across the capital this year – the highest in more than a decade.

Despite escalating youth violence, in January the Met announced that Kennington and Camberwell police stations would be formally closed

by March, leaving force volunteers scouting for ad hoc bases in SE5 for officers to use for “tea and toilet breaks”.

Neither stations had a front counter in operation for the public since 2013, but were being used as back offices for bobbies, and for pop-up “meet and greets”.

Some progress has been made, including in keeping the worst offenders in jail. A new law, “Bonnie’s Law”- aims to stop murderers being eligible for early parole if they refuse to cooperate with the police and reveal

over-stretched police forces aren’t able to keep up with ‘low level’ crime.

In August, a community meeting was held after reports of anti-social behaviour from ‘boys on bikes’ up and down Tooley Street and surrounding areas.

One hundred people turned out to hear from police top brass and council officers, with many saying local parks had become ‘no-go’ areas.

It wasn’t just kids causing problems.

Two Bermondsey “Beer Mile” businesses had the terms of their alcohol licences reviewed over problems with their punters including late-night swearing, public vomiting, and littering.

In a submission to a licensing subcommittee, the chair of Arnold Estate TRA told Southwark councillors over the summer: “My sleep times are pushed out to accommodate transient visitors to the area who urinate in our street, leave their rubbish and pizza crusts and vomit behind, whilst they go home in their cabs before repeating the cycle the next

weekend.”

In Camberwell’s Brandon Estate, a community left distraught by a series of killings said they had been let down

by Southwark Council and local MPs after promises for new CCTV, improved lighting, and tree cutting were “too little too late”, with dark areas still being used for drug dealing and anti-social behaviour.

In October, one TRA member described parts of the estate as “like a tropical rainforest” and said the council’s tree pruners had a “haphazard schedule” which she claimed was “not being followed” despite the employees’ protestations.

At a public meeting, residents infuriated over ongoing heating and hot water problems turned their ire on the council.

“The children that join these gangs come from poverty-stricken homes. Cold baths these children are taking – in the year 2019.”

In July, after the law first entered parliament, bereaved mother and campaigner Jackie Summerford from Walworth challenged her daughter’s killer: “Tell me where my daughter’s body is or die in prison”.

New modern slavery legislation has also helped convict violent criminals responsible for grooming children into their drug-selling gangs with longer sentences.

One gang, in May, was convicted in a “landmark case”. One of their six victims, aged nineteen, told the jury how when he tried to leave the gang he was stripped naked and threatened with a gun to his head.

In September we reported how 4,013 people in London, the youngest just eleven-years-old, were suspected to be involved in county lines activity between January 2018 and April 2019, according to data from the Mayor’s office.

In Southwark, 35 young people were referred to a specialist “rescue and

response” programme, to try to help at risk youngsters from being sucked into gangs.

In January, the ex partner of seventeen-year-old Katrina Makunova was handed under three years in jail for her manslaughter in a Camberwell block.

Camberwell MP Harriet Harman intervened and urged a review into the sentence, but it was rejected, and a police internal probe was launched when it emerged Katrina and her family had raised concerns with the police before her death.

This year Harman helped push through the new Domestic Abuse Bill, which recognises coercive control alongside physical violence.

An amendment she has lobbied for includes banning the use of the “fifty shades of grey defence”- where some men have been given more lenient sentences or manslaughter rather than murder convictions after claiming their wives or girlfriends died during “rough sex gone wrong”.

Bermondsey mum sets up support group

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk This was the year one Bermondsey mum took things into her own hands and set up a social awareness group to help protect Bermondsey from crime and support the community.

In June, we interviewed Charley Miller about her SE16 social awareness Facebook group which gained nearly 3,000 members within months of being set up in February.

“I’ve been inundated with messages.

I just thought it was a good platform to try and grow a local community, for everyone to be able to support each other,” she said.

Although the events and positivity is important, it’s fair to say many use it as a way to find out exactly what is going on.

Too many lives tragically cut short Baby girl, name unknown, SE16 A two-month-old girl died at an SE16 postcode address shortly after 10am on April 26. A post-mortem showed she had broken bones. A man and woman were arrested on suspicion of murder.

Charlotte Huggins, 33, Camberwell Charlotte, a mother, was stabbed to death by her ex-partner, 34-year-old Michael Rolle, at 4.20am on January 1.

He will serve a minimum of 20 years before parole.

Dennis Anderson, 39, East Dulwich Dennis was stabbed to death just before 3am on February 10 by Jahmel Michael Riley (24) in an off-license in Lordship Lane. Riley was handed a lifesentence.

McCaulay Junior UrugbeziEdwards, Elephant and Castle McCaulay Junior Urugbezi-Edwards, 18, died in Tiverton Street on May 5 after being chased and stabbed. A 17-yearold was charged with murder.

Amara Toure, Walworth The eighteen-year-old was stabbed in Walworth’s Sutherland Walk shortly before 5am on June 30. He died in hospital. Paulinho Paulo, 20, Dullah Abdullah, and Sultan Chaudhry, all 20, were charged with murder.

Norman Bertran-Tavarez, 24, Elephant and Castle Attacked in the tube station on the night of September 1, he died in hospital the following morning. Two men, Jose Perez Fana and Kelvin Plata Fana (30 and 22) were arrested in Antwerp and charged with murder.

Clinton Evbota, Camberwell The eighteen-year-old died in Grimsel Path in Camberwell’s Brandon Estate at 8.21pm on October 10. A former resident who had moved to Kent, he is believed to have been visiting friends.

Police have now made eight arrests, including a sixteen-year-old charged with murder.

February – Drag queens start fitness class August – Britain’s most pampered pooch

Drag queens are known for telling people to “Sissy that walk!” But a Bankside group of drag artists decided to take it a little further, by setting up their own ‘drag fitness’ club.

The classes at Bankside Health Club have all the normal trimmings – except they feature a rolling cast of performances from queens like Mary Poppers, Bella U. Voyáge and Mayowa Monaé.

They were the brainchild of fitness instructor Jordan McInerny and Dragged around London, which runs “fruity and fabulous tours.”

But the queens don’t always exercise. “Lip-syncing in heels is enough exercise for us dear,” one told the News.

He wears an expensive £5,000 Swarovski crystal jacket, eats only expensive raw foods, and hangs out with top celebs like Keeley Hawes and Daniel Radcliffe.

Burly Bear could be among Britain’s most pampered dogs. His owners, Michael and Ken, who live in Borough, estimate they have spent the equivalent of £30,000 a year on their Pomeranian.

Through Ken’s work as a freelance fashion hairdresser, Burly has met top celebs and featured in photo-shoots in Vogue and the Mail.

He was also the face of Primark’s Christmas in-store ads.

Wheel of Weird March – Captain Corelli loses mandolin The instrument is the star of the production Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. But an actor playing the lead character of a major production lost the priceless instrument at a train in London Bridge.

Lead actor Alex Mugnaion managed to misplace the precious 129-year-old instrument on a train home to Sidcup.

The instrument – which is distinctive and hard to replace – went missing just weeks before the show’s opening night in April.

“It’s so out of character, it’s not something Corelli would’ve done either!” Mr Mugnainon told the News. The mandolin was not found, despite an international appeal, and had to be replaced ahead of the show.

NEWS August – Thief steals Guy Fawkes’s head

March – Hallucinogenic snacks for kids?

A warning circulated to Southwark parents said that cereal bars were being given to kids which could make them hallucinate severely and become violently ill.

The Astrosnacks rumour was spread to the borough’s schools after a Trading Standards email was passed onto them by the council. Several schools then published it in a warning to parents.

But in response to our enquiries, Scotland Yard said it wasn’t aware of any incidents of cereal bars causing hallucinations in children, either in Southwark or further afield.

There have been no further reports of the supposedly dangerous cereal bars since.

Off with their heads! A man was spotted on camera appearing to steal the model heads of Guy Fawkes, Oliver Cromwell and Sir Thomas More from a display at the London Bridge Experience.

The brazen snatch took place at around 3.30am. The man used a rope to lasso the heads down from above the attraction’s door, and shoved Oliver Cromwell and Sir Thomas More in his rucksack.

He then stamped Guy Fawkes off a spike, and casually walked down the road with the disembodied head under his arm.

“It’s really frustrating when we’ve been working twenty-hour days and some little scrote comes along and does this,” the business’s director told the News. The heads were not recovered.

SPECULATION THAT PM-hopeful Boris Johnson has been sharing a flat in Camberwell with his girlfriend was dramatically exposed last week, after the national press reported on a bust-up between the pair.

Now posters are being left in the area proclaiming: ‘We’d rather endure him as our neighbour than our Prime Minister.’

The apparent argument just after midnight in the early hours of Friday morning (June 21) was reported to The Guardian newspaper by a neighbour, who is said to have recorded it on a smartphone.

This was just hours after another landslide ballot victory for the 55-year-old former Foreign Secretary.

As Mr Johnson faces Jeremy Hunt in the battle to become the next prime Minister it might well be the residents of Camberwell who stop him from sailing to victory.

The ‘blazing row’ and ‘proper tear-up’ as reportedly described by the neighbours has drawn extensive media attention to the personal life of the Tory leadership favourite, who already has two divorces and a ‘lovechild’.

The Camberwell flat in a plush converted Victorian house is home to his current partner 31-year-old Carrie Symonds, a former Conservative party head of press.

The Southwark News diarist speculated nine days ago that Boris could be living in Camberwell, but avoided revealing where.

But after Friday’s disclosure, national media outlets spent much of the day and

following weekend camped out on the doorstep.

Neighbours interviewed claimed that Miss Symonds was shouting “get off me, get out of my flat” and Boris shouting back ‘get off my f***ing laptop’ before a loud crashing noise was heard and police called.

The Guardian said that when they contacted police they initially said they had no record of a domestic incident at the address.

But when given the case number and reference number, as well as identification markings of the vehicles that were called out, police issued a statement confirming they were called to Miss Symonds’ flat at 00:24am and spoke to all the occupants of the address, ‘who were safe and well’.

Protesters also took the opportunity to demonstrate on Mr Johnson’s doorstep, with activists from the anarchist ‘Class War’ group reportedly holding banners outside the flat on Sunday.

The saga has followed Mr Johnson into the following week as the race for No 10 continues, after being asked about the incident in a series of interviews.

On Monday evening, the favourite to become PM again point-blank refused to talk about the row between himself and Ms Symonds on Friday.

In an interview with the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg for the 10 o’clock news, Mr Johnson said: “I've made it a rule over many, many years and I think you've interviewed me loads of times, I do not talk about stuff involving my family, my loved ones.

“There's a very good reason for that. That is that, if you do, you drag them into things that, really, is, in a way that is not fair on them.”

THE HEADS of Guy Fawkes, Oliver Cromwell and Sir Thomas More were snatched by a ‘bold thief’ from an SE1 tourist attraction in the early hours of the morning.

CCTV captured by the London Bridge Experience, on Tooley Street, appears to show a brazen criminal using a rope lasso to ‘hook’Sir Thomas More’s model head at around 3.30am on Saturday.

The three heads had been positioned on spikes in a display overlooking the entrance London Bridge attraction.

The figures were custom-made for the attraction in America costing a pricey £300 each and taking three months to make.

“It’s not just a case of going to the shop and getting some new heads,” he added.

Two other heads in the five-piece set – WilliamWallace andThomas Cromwell – were inside the building at the time and so escaped the thief’s head-grabbing rampage. All five historical figures had their real-life heads displayed on spikes on London Bridge. The installation was commissioned by thewww.southwarknews.co.uk London Bridge Experience ahead of Halloween as part of a programme of upgrades.

“It’s really frustrating when we’ve been working twenty-hour days and some little scrote comes along and does this,” said - pages 14-15 Mr Kislingbury.

A Met Police spokesman confirmed they had been contacted “after some items were stolen from above the doorway of a tourist attraction in Tooley Street, SE1.

“The doorway had also been damaged.”

No arrests have yet been made.

“It’s been a really bizarre 24 hours!” added the director as he was speaking to the News on Sunday.

REMEMBERING THOSE WHO LEFT US

Charlie Cherrill In September tributes poured in for former Southwark councillor Charlie Cherrill, who died in St Christopher’s Hospice in Sydenham after a short illness.

Southwark’s “Millennium Mayor” who grew up in Walworth, was immortalised in a photograph on the newly opened Millennium Bridge with HRH Queen Elizabeth and the Lord Mayor of London. His many other passion projects included Southwark Pensioners’ Centre and support for young people across the borough. His son Matthew said: “He was proud to serve the borough in which he was born and spent almost his entire life.”

A formidable former headmistress of St Michael’s secondary, where she ruled the roost for a quarter of a century, Sister Ann Hoskison passed away just before the start of 2019. A memorial service for the “flying nun”, who had served in the RAF as a young woman, was held in Bermondsey’s Most Holy Trinity Church in Dockhead with grown up pupils recalling visits to her childhood home of Alverstoke, in Portsmouth, where she set up a residential centre for young people.

Bonamy and Bramcote TRA chair and community champion, Pat Hickson MBE, sadly passed away from cancer aged 79 in October; just three-anda-half months after being diagnosed.

Pat ran the annual St George’s Day events at Ilderton Road Primary, and was heavily involved in running Links Community Hall in Rotherhithe New Road, and for her work in the former Rotherhithe Community Council.

Simon Hughes, the ex-Bermondsey MP, described her as a “loving, caring and determined and passionate champion of her community”.

Moving tributes are still being placed on Drummond Road, where 20-yearold Ryan O’Donnell fell to his death from a block of flats. His heartbroken mum, Pam, described him as a ‘beautiful free-loving spirit’ and ‘my special baby’. The former Galleywall schoolboy was known for his love of animals and had been studying music production at Lambeth College. A fundraiser set up by a lifelong Manor Estate friend raised £6,000. “He grew up to be such a beautiful person,” his mum said.

Mishi Morath, who passed away in December, earned his reputation as Dulwich Hamlet FC’s biggest fan but the much-loved footie fanatic was also a well-loved library assistant across Southwark and self-described “working class poet”. Morath had cheated a heart attack and recovered from lengthy hospital stays including having his toe amputated. A few weeks before his untimely death, Mishi – who often described the News as his favourite paper – had said his regular twitter habit kept him from feeling too lonely. If only he could have seen the hundreds, if not thousands, sharing messages of love and support after his passing.

Bermondsey lost one of its true old-timers in May when 101-yearold Hilda McCarthy passed away.

Described as the “loveliest and friendliest”, the former civil servant lived in Bermondsey all her life. A regular down the Blue, she got her hair done at Dougals each week but frequently failed to make it home for hours as the great-great grandmother of seventeen was enjoying chatting so much to all she bumped into.

Hilda McCarthy Aldrin Carlos’ mother spent nearly three weeks searching for her missing son only to discover all along the nineteen-year-old’s body had been in a park under a mile from their Canada Water home. Talented artist Aldrin had a promising future ahead and was known for his kind, caring nature and love for martial arts and basketball. His nurse mum, Grace, told the News how she had brought him to London from the Philippines, after years spent apart, in pursuit of a better life. “Both of us were really excited to be together after a long time. I promised to him that I would show him the world.”

By Laura Burgoine Blacksmith Kevin Boys is in his own “little world” in his forge on Surrey Docks Farm. “I get up at six o’clock every morning, I get in here for seven or half seven, and I stay for as long as possible ‘til about six in the evening, much to my wife’s consternation and patience,” he says. “This is my little world in here, my kingdom where I can control everything.”

Locally, Kevin is known for creating the Bermondsey Lion which stands in pride of place in the market square down the Blue on Southwark Park Road. His next local commission is a sculpture of the red Scotch Derrick crane on the Rotherhithe peninsula.

“Hollybrook, the developers, took out the red crane and they agreed to pay for a sculpture to go back. I’ve got the steel from the original crane, not all of it but enough of it to make a sculpture,” Kevin says. “That crane was made in 1968. It’s lovely steel. We’ll heat it up, forge it, put it through the power hammer, strengthen it up…There’s been a crane on that side of the river

since before 1500, easily 500 years. It was a meeting point, a real landmark.”

Kevin’s grandfather and his brother were both blacksmiths. His other grandfather was a stonemason. “We had it in the family,” Kevin says. “I learnt off of my grandfather when I was younger, quite a lot of stuff. Then I went to college on the basis of becoming a painter.”

While studying fine arts at Canterbury College of Art, followed by a Masters in America, Kevin discovered sculpture.

“Interestingly, when I was at college they said ‘less than one percent of you are going to end up being artists.’ You can see why parents think fine art isn’t a good thing to study. But the principles and processes you learn in fine arts are transferable to other things,” he says.

“One day I’ll go back to painting,” he continues. “I paint my sculptures. And I do a lot of drawing. I can’t stop myself really. If, and when, I do ever slow down from blacksmithing, then I can paint.”

stuff that’s too heavy… and playing rugby,” Kevin says. “You get burnt and cut and scratched. We’ve got two power hammers and they’re hugely dangerous. They can deliver a 30kg hammer blow 180 times a minute.”

“I’m quite glad to say I used to injure myself quite a lot when I was younger but as I’ve got older I don’t. I’m not rushing around so much.”

Now based in Shooter’s Hill, Kevin lived in Peckham from 1985 and set up the forge on Surrey Docks Farm in 1991, back in the days when the area was “like the Wild West.” “Gangs would hang around the YMCA in Rotherhithe and wait for the tourists to come out so they could nab them,” he says.

The blacksmith set up the forge in 1991, next to what would later become the urban farm. Historically, the site was used by the Metropolitan Asylums Board as a Receiving Station for their River Ambulance Service, to transfer smallpox and fever patients to isolation hospitals downriver.

“There was this building, which was an inspection room for people suspected of having smallpox, and there was a jetty that went out 300 foot,” Kevin says. “I’ve seen old black and white photos of children and babies in wooden cots on boats at the end of the jetty, stuck out there.”

Kevin has amassed quite the regal CV throughout his career, creating sculptures for the Tower of London and signs in Kensington Palace’s Princess Diana memorial garden. “I’ve been working for the Tower of London for 20 odd years,” he says. “I made six archers for them; the two English bowmen on the top, the crossbow men. They’re 6 foot; they took about six months per man to make.”

Last year, he hung a 13th centurystyle, two metre chandelier on the vaulted ceiling of the Beauchamp Tower in the Tower of London.

“I remember I got a phonecall from the constable of the Tower one day saying ‘we’ve been compelled by the Yeomen of the Guard and the general public to investigate and display torture at the tower. We’re looking to recreate the

original stretching rack,” Kevin says.

“The best picture of the original rack was in a first edition Shakespeare play, on the inside cover. You have to be able to research in this job.”

Kevin made the stretching rack.

“In order to show the Tower what it was going to look like, I made a scale model that fitted Action Man. I got the ninja action man because he’s got a hood. We discovered Action Man’s a bit weedy but Strike Force man is much tougher,” the blacksmith laughs. “If you go to the Clink Prison Museum, they’ve borrowed that model.”

Currently Kevin is in talks with Hampton Court about making mobile signage. “Because signs are going to be wheeled in and out of the front gates they need to fit in with the front gate, otherwise they look like Tesco trolleys,” he says.

But Kevin doesn’t just specialise in historical projects. “Years ago I did a project for a British Airways flagship hotel at Gatwick airport and it was a sleek modernist interior and so I decided to contrast them with something rococo and flamboyant. We did chandeliers and big candelabras,” he says. “Steel is such a plastic material; you can do anything with it.”

Blacksmithing, Kevin says, is a profession where you never stop learning. “It’s like playing the violin, you practise and you get better and better. We make our own tools – that’s why they call it the king’s craft. Once you get into tool making, you can start designing tools and with that kind of control and flexibility it means you can make whatever you want.”

“It’s a nightmare me walking around London,” he laughs. “I can be with people and we can be deep in conversation and I’ll wander off to look at a sculpture.”

Peter Andre in West End Thriller

Thriller Live has been running on the West End for 10 years and for a limited run, Peter Andre has joined the cast, writes Rosie O’Connell...

All this without even leaving Southwark! The Menier Chocolate Factory’s latest production, The Boyfriend by Sandy Wilson, is a brightly lit, colourful romp and would warm the cockles of even the weariest Londoner’s heart.

The 1950s’ show is set in a ‘finishing school’ full of giggling girls who are all desperately in search of that life essential, The Boyfriend. Amara Okereke, fresh from success in Oklahoma at the Chichester Festival theatre, and Dylan Mason impress as the star-crossed young lovers, Polly and Tony. Polly is the daughter of a millionaire, posing as a secretary to

find a man who isn’t just interested in her money. Tony, working as a messenger boy, has his own secrets to hide. They sing together of their humble aspirations for a simple ‘Room in Bloomsbury’, to knowing chuckles from the audience before being separated in a predictable plot twist. Will they be reunited at the ball?

Will they Charleston the night away together? No plot spoilers here.

Janie Dee as the school principal, Madame Dubonnet, has a bit of a wandering accent but her comic timing is always in exactly the right place.

The highlight of her performance was the powerful and poignant rendition of ‘Poor little Pierrette’ which created a moment of genuine emotion in what is a mostly ‘frothy’ show. Adrian Edmondson brings a comic, though rather un-PC touch, to the ageing

and reach of his music throughout his career.

The team of vocalists were terrific, although, when the standard they are being held to is Michael Jackson level it is always going to fall a little short. The dancers keep the momentum going with their vigorous choreography, often-times echoing those immediately recognisable Jackson moves.

While Peter Andre’s addition to the cast may seem a little odd, it actually ends up working quite well and I was pleasantly surprised at how his vocals held up. Truth be told, it seems like he is having the time of his life up on that stage and that high energy is infectious.

Honestly, I really didn’t know what this show was going to be. Would it be like Mamma Mia, a new plot using the songs of Michael Jackson, or would it be like more like a biopic. It turns out it was neither. The format you actually get is more like a concert with the loosest of narratives – a two hour performance of Jackson’s greatest hits.

The cast moves through four decades of music, from his Jackson 5 beginnings in disco through to the more rocky, electronic sounds of his later albums.

All the hits are here from I Want You Back and ABC, through Don’t Stop Til’ You Get Enough and Dirty Diana and ending up with the big guns of Billie Jean, Thriller and Bad. You don’t need to be the biggest MJ fan to have a fun night and that really points to the scope

The dancing and music throughout are splendid. Hats off to the choreographer, who at one point gets all 19 cast members twirling on the small stage. The showstopper Charleston is irresistible and we also get a tango, waltz and quickstep.

In 1958 Shelagh Delaney’s kitchen sink drama debuted at the Theatre Royal Stratford East and now this National Theatre production of A Taste Of Honey returns to the capital at the end of its UK tour, writes Christopher Peacock...

Bijan Sheibani’s production includes a jazz trio that score the play well, highlighting the highs and adding more grit to the atmosphere that Hildegard Bechtler’s set of the run-down Salford flat encompasses. However, the over engineered set pirouetting around in the scene changes pushes this 50s’ realism into musical-theatre realms and even though incredibly well choreographed, seems a little out of place. The addition of songs from the cast at times distracts from the gritty realism of the play.

An important piece of 20th century British theatre, the play’s tale of a young working class girl trying to find her way in love and life, and somewhat following in the footsteps of her mother, is not as controversial as it was 60 years ago, yet still entertains

with Delaney’s sharp script not really dating. As a society we have moved in a positive direction, interracial relationships and homosexuality are not taboo subjects as they were in ’58, so the focus of the play is drawn more towards the mother-daughter relationship. It is in the scenes between the two women that show the play’s emotional depth and some of Delaney’s wittiest lines.

The performances from the whole cast were strong and Jodie Prenger’s turn as Helen is acerbic and punchy throughout. Gemma Dobson’s Jo is given room to grow through the show that in turn produces some of the most real moments. A Taste Of Honey as a play is not the heavy hitter it once was and feels like it has been put on as a nod to its historical importance to British theatre, rather than a social commentary on present day society.

From fear and medicine to Victorian circus freaks and flesh

By Laura Burgoine After a sold out events programme in 2019, where the Old Operating Theatre dedicated the year to fear and medicine, 2020 is set to be their most engaging and thought-provoking year yet.

The museum’s events programme is themed around Flesh: more than skin deep. Besides being the part of the body that is made out of muscles and fat, the word flesh has been used to refer to the physicality of the human body in general, and the images that it evokes have shifted depending on its perception from a historical, social, moral, religious, political, or economic point of view, among others. Whether metaphorical or literal, the word flesh will allow visitors to explore concepts surrounding the history of the body and the changes, uses, and abuses that have been made to it as well as the possible reasons behind those transformations.

Major highlights of the programme include talks by Victorian specialist, Dr. John Woolf, author of The Wonders, who will talk about circus freaks in the Victorian Era; Dr. Amy Matthewson, research fellow at SOAS University, who will introduce people to Choo Ling Soo, the great Victorian magician, and his trick of disguising flesh; Dr. Sasha Garwood Lloyd, research associate at the University of Nottingham, who will focus her talk on disappearing flesh or how women in the Victorian era took control of their bodies; Dr. Bill Maclehose examines medieval flesh, while Dr. Kathleen Walker-Meikle will discuss the concept of diseased flesh in the early modern period. Education and access manager, Julie Mathias, will focus her talk on common flesh or prostitution in the Victorian era.

The Old Operating Theatre’s film nights will add a bit of horror to the line-up. Not to mention their special events like having the Cabinet of Living Cinema to perform the score for the 100th anniversary of the screening of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari in the operating theatre, or the performance of the award-winning Two Body Problem by I Swear I Saw This. The museum is also running a licensed Apothecary Wine Bar for 45 minutes before the event starts.

The Old Operating Theatre Museum and Herb Garret is located in the attic of St Thomas’ Church in London Bridge up a narrow 52-step spiral staircase. The church was constructed in the eighteenth century as part of the rebuilding of Old St Thomas’ Hospital.

The timber-framed attic of this church was used by the apothecaries of Old St Thomas’ to dry and cure herbs for patients’ medicines. Later on, in 1822, the space was transformed into a surgical theatre for the women’s wards before the introduction of anaesthetics and antiseptics. After closing down in 1862 and forgotten, it was rediscovered in 1956 and opened as a museum in 1962. Since then the museum has become an important educational and cultural centre dedicated to the history of medicine. Under the care of the Lord Brock Trust (a registered charity), the Old Operating Theatre Museum & Herb Garret is committed to creating unique, educational, thought-provoking, and entertaining events in their space to raise the museum’s profile, as well as funds to keep it running. Fisher walk off pitch after abuse allegations

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FISHER BOSS Ajay Ashanike said he made the decision to take his players off the pitch after allegations that a member of the AFC Croydon Athletic TEAM made a racist remark towards his side.

The SCEFL fixture at the Mayfield Stadium was abandoned by referee Dan Blades following a brawl involving 21 players sparked by the alleged abuse.

In a post on Twitter on Saturday, Ashanike said: “I made the decision to walk my players off the field for a reason.

“All my players are safe and sound.

I’m sorry to both sets of fans who came today but I couldn’t ignore what happened.”

A Fisher statement said: “In the 58th minute of Saturday’s Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division game against AFC Croydon Athletic, a member of the opposing team made a racially abusive comment towards the Fisher team.

“As a result of this comment, which was immediately brought to the match officials' attention, the players and management team were united in taking a stand by leaving the field of play.

“As a result, the match was abandoned with the score standing at 3-1 to AFC Croydon Athletic.

“The players, management team and club are all in agreement that there was no option but to leave the field of play and the result of the match is unimportant in light of the abuse.

“The matter is now in the hands of the authorities and Fisher Football Club will make no further comment at this stage.”

Croydon released a statement on Sunday night. It read: “Yesterday’s game at home to Fisher FC was abandoned by the referee after about an hour of play after the Fisher FC team refused to continue the game.

“It is alleged that a racist remark was heard on the field of play. The matter will, quite rightly, be fully investigated and the club will participate fully in any investigation.

“As is often the case in matters such

“The accused player, who had previously scored in the game, firmly denies the allegation. The Club has

confidence in any investigation to consider objectively the incident and to reach an appropriate conclusion.

The investigation should also consider whether the allegation was based on a reasonable belief and, if not, what action should result as a consequence.”

A League statement read: “The Southern Counties East Football League are aware of reports on social media of racial abuse at the game between AFC

Stansfeld started the second half on the front foot and in the 51st minute a towering header from Lennie Wise found Shinners at the far post. He did well to hook the ball back across goal where Casey Killilea smashed home from close range to give Stansfeld a deserved lead.

Kent pushed for an equaliser but without troubling the ever-alert Stansfeld goalkeeper Charlie Cottrell.

Stansfeld continued to press and had a couple of efforts cleared off the line. First the visitors had a let-off when Shinners went close and then Wise’s header hit the post before bouncing clear.

Stansfeld, though good value for their win, were not at their best, but after having the previous weekend’s game against Holmesdale called off and with the busy festive period for the players, it was a game that was needed. The clean sheet pleased the Stansfeld management team even more going into the New Year.

Stansfeld dominated the early play and created a great chance in the eleventh minute when Ryan Hassan’s lob over the goalkeeper rolled agonisingly wide of the post.

Stansfeld went close again minutes

later when a good through-ball from Jake Britnell put Billy Shinners through towards goal. He squared to Hassan whose shot beat the opposing stopper but was cleared off the line by the covering defenders.

In the 29th minute Stansfeld were awarded a penalty after some good link-up play before Freddie Cray was brought down in the box.

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET gave Millwall defender Jesse Debrah a debut as they opened up 2020 with an impressive 3-0 win at Hampton & Richmond Borough on New Year’s Day.

Debrah, who has been on the firstteam bench for the Lions, slotted into a defence that kept a first league clean sheet since November.

Lionel Ainsworth and Dylan Kearney put the Hamlet two goals up at the break and Nyren Clunis scored in the last minute against the side that had won 2-1 at Champion Hill on Boxing Day. The result moved Gavin Rose’s side up to sixteenth, four points above the relegation zone.

Dulwich were indebted to goalkeeper Charlie Grainger early on as he twice saved efforts from Ruaridh Donaldson.

It took 30 minutes for the Hamlet to have their first shot on goal as Quade Taylpor’s attempt was easily saved by Dan Lincoln.

The visitors went ahead four minutes later when Kearney crossed from the right and Ainsworth volleyed home his first goal for the club.

Dulwich doubled that lead in the 37th minute as Shamir Mullings darted forward to cross from the left and Kearney scored for the fourth consecutive game.

Ryan Hill, who looked the hosts’ most dangerous player, had a chance to equalise before half-time but volleyed off-target.

Hampton, who were in the top half of the table before kick-off, made two substitutions at half-time as they tried to find a way back into the game.

Lewthwaite and Hill were at the forefront of their team’s effort to reduce the lead, but they couldn’t test Grainger, who then saved from Charlie Wassmer.

And it was Dulwich who made sure of the points deep into a lengthy period of added-time when Dominic Vose sent in a low cross from the left and Clunis finished past Lincoln.

Grainger mopped up a free-kick from Hill and then dived to his left to deny former Millwall midfielder Kyron Farrell.

The Hamlet could have made it four, but Lincoln prevented Clunis from getting a brace.

There were a number of particularly touching moments. One girl, unable to turn her neck owing to a head brace, was overjoyed with her present.

A mother was moved to tears by the visit, coming after what she described as “an extremely tough few days”.

The father of one boy even suggested that he might be willing to adopt a second football club beyond his beloved Liverpool, such was his appreciation for what Dulwich have done.

The Hamlet gift-bearers were shepherded through the hospital wards by Health Based Specialist Jackie Ambrose, who shed some light on what the visit meant to the families.

“It’s a great distraction for parents and children. Families become quite isolated here – they can lose awareness of the outside world because they’re totally

focused on their children in hospital.

“Doing this puts smiles on their faces so we really appreciate it. We’ve had a few tears today. So thank you for bringing some cheer to us.”

Taylor reflected on why he volunteered to help out at the hospital.

“It’s a really important thing to do. As a parent myself I can only imagine how horrible it is being trapped in hospital over Christmas like that.”

Marino underlined the inspiring effect that initiatives such as this can have.

“I hope that by doing community work like this it encourages young boys and girls to get involved in sport and hopefully come along to watch some games.”

Hyneman took over leadership of Dulwich Hamlet’s community work two years ago from Hamlet fan Mishi Morath, who sadly died the week before Christmas. Hyneman explained that initiatives like this are part of Morath’s legacy.

And Clunis paid tribute to the lifelong supporter.

“Mishi was a great guy, he did a fantastic amount for the community and he’ll be sorely missed.”

Tears and smiles as Hamlet make hospital visit sport@southwarknews.co.uk LOCAL CHILDREN confined to hospital beds over Christmas were provided with some cheer by a visit from players from Dulwich Hamlet men’s and women’s teams.

Nyren Clunis handed out gifts

As reported by the News recently, Dulwich Hamlet’s community branch, led by Rob Hyneman, raised money for the project through a bucket collection and a donation website.

The club used the money raised to purchase gifts from a Christmas wish list drawn up by children at King’s College Hospital in Denmark Hill. The donations amounted to almost £300 and additional Hamlet scarves and badges were donated by the club’s Supporters’ Trust.

Rather than three wise men, both male and female footballers were sent by the club to deliver the gifts, in typically progressive fashion. Kiki Marino and Raquel Arran represented the women’s team, and Quade Taylor and Nyren Clunis were present on behalf of the men’s side.

Cooper more concerned with substance of performances than appearance record EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JAKE COOPER marked 100 consecutive league appearances for Millwall on Boxing Day – and thanked Neil Harris and Gary Rowett for the faith they have shown in him.

The last time Cooper, 24, didn’t play a league game for the Lions was more than two years ago, on November 4 2017 when he was suspended for a game against Burton Albion.

Not only that, but Cooper has played every minute of the now 102 Championship games since then.

Cooper was the first player since 2011 to achieve that century milestone, when David Forde went on to make 138 consecutive league starts.

Copper hit the 100-game mark against Harris’ Bluebirds. Next in his sights are Dennis Burnett and George Fisher on 106.

Cooper is the twelfth Lion in the 100 club.

“I was thinking about it,” Cooper admitted on the approaching century.

“I didn’t want to think about it too much but, listen, it’s good to have that amount

of games in my legs and to be involved in so much.

“It’s more about what I do in those games, and I’m working on that. The more games I get the more I get to learn and figure out how I can get better.

“I’m just enjoying playing and I want to continue that run. I look after myself, definitely, make sure my body’s in the right place.

“I’ve learned a lot about my body.

Growing up I had quite a few injuries to I had to learn to adapt. I learned what pain is and what pain you can carry on with. It was always a learning process.

“I eat well, look after myself to make sure my body is ready for training and games.

“I’ve got to give a lot of credit to the two managers as well. I can be fit or not but they’ve put me out there. I’ve not been brilliant in all of those 100 games so I’ve got to thank them for trusting me.”

If Rowett decides to rest him for a league game and break the run, would Cooper object? “He’s the manager so I can’t dictate that. I don’t think he’ll feel like he has to rest me, I think it will be down to my performances. I think he’s happy with me at the minute from the feedback I’ve had so I’m hoping I keep performing to

the level to keep me in the team.”

Cooper has been given more responsibility on the ball by Rowett, and Millwall’s media account posted a clip of him dribbling down the left wing on the ball against Derby.

Millwall haven’t exactly adapted Sheffield United’s overlappingcentre-back system that stormed the Championship last season, but there are certainly more demands on Cooper in possession.

“There’s still a lot of room for improvement and that’s probably the most exciting thing about it, that there are still a lot of areas that we can get better in,” Cooper said.

“We’re learning more about shape and how the manager wants us to play. We’re just enjoying it at the minute.

“The manager has said to me to get higher up at times, not necessarily on the opposition’s byline, but maybe to drag one of their attackers out and break their attacking line and get our wing-backs higher up.

“He said to me I could be ten yards higher up than when I’m playing in a four at the back. It’s refreshing, it’s nice to have new ideas and improve different areas.”

Mahoney magic gives Lions winning 2020 start

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett revealed he had a “one-toone” conversation with Connor Mahoney last week – before the winger inspired the Lions to their New Year’s Day victory over Luton.

Mahoney came on in the 71st minute and eight minutes later received a pass from Jed Wallace – following a brilliant tackle by Mahlon Romeo – before advancing towards the penalty area and cutting inside two players to curl a right-footed effort past James Shea from the edge of the box.

Three minutes after his first goal for the Lions, Mahoney crossed for Matt Smith to head in and make it 3-1.

Another substitute, Tom Bradshaw, had brought Millwall level when he nodded in Smith’s header back across goal.

“I spoke to Connor last week, he came to see me and we sat down and had a one-to-one,” Rowett said.

“I said, ‘I’ve got to be able to trust you out of possession as well as in possession’. And that was the challenge, really.

“Because he’s a laidback character, sometimes players like that don’t outwardly show that drive as much as

some of the other players. But he’s not that type of player naturally.

“He’s just got to get it out of him, he’s got to go and force the action and be a bit more proactive. I said to all the players that if we’re doing the right things as a team, the players that are not in the side you’ve got to make it very difficult for me to pick a team every week.

“That’s the type of squad we’ve got. The players out of the team have started to respond, the players in the team have got to fight hard to keep the shirt. It means we can make the changes to affect games.

“There’s quite a lot of the games where we’ve changed it and the substitutions have affected the games.

Not because of tactically, but because the players are coming on with a brilliant, brilliant attitude.

“That’s been a key factor [Wednesday].

Going 1-0 down on a difficult pitch – and that’s no one’s fault – but it’s a difficult surface to play quickly on, to show that character second half and drive and desire epitomises what we’re about as a team.”

It looked like it would be a similar story for Millwall at home against a struggling side after their 2-1 defeat to Barnsley.

Rowett made the decision to take off his captain Alex Pearce for Bradshaw three minutes before the break and that gave Millwall more movement and someone for Smith to link with.

The Lions dominated the second half and once Bradshaw equalised they always looked like they would go on and win it.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk AIDEN O’BRIEN has revealed he has had conversations with his agent over his future – but he is determined to keep working hard to win a regular place in Gary Rowett’s side.

Before his first start under Rowett against Brentford last Sunday when he scored the winning goal, O’Brien had played just an hour for Neil Harris’ successor.

Speaking to the News last week about his future, O’Brien said: “I’m just trying to keep my head down and train as hard as I can to keep myself fit if I do get called upon. The manager makes the decisions on what team he feels is best to win the game.

“Obviously you want to start every game, I’m not happy to be on the bench every week, which is normal for any player to feel like.

“The conversations have been had between me and my agent. That’s normal. Every player wants to be on the pitch playing football, no one wants to be on the bench.

“We’re winning games and when you’re winning games you can’t just expect to get straight into the team.

You’ve got to make sure you’re working hard on your game in training and every day showing the manager you’re keen and want to start.

“I feel like I have being doing that. In terms of a loan, when the window does

“But until then I’m going to get my head down and work as hard as I can and hopefully get more game-time.

O’Brien has played off a main striker and on the left side of the attack this season.

He added: “Don’t get me wrong, in an ideal world I want to be playing as close to the opposition goal as possible. But I can do a job as I have done in the last couple of years under Neil Harris, and in certain games now, out wide either side, off the top, up front.

“It’s having the knack of being in the right place at the right time, that’s what I’ve got and that’s what I’ll keep bringing to the team, whether I’m playing left, right or up top. I want to keep scoring goals because that’s what I love doing.”

The likes of Connor Mahoney, Matt Smith and Billy Mitchell could face the League Two side as Millwall aim for another run in the competition.

The Lions have played seven games in the last 27 days and have had to cope with injuries and illnesses in their squad.

Midfielders Ben Thompson and Ryan Leonard are unavailable through injury. Tom Elliott is completing his rehabilitation but won’t be ready to feature.

Goalkeeper Frank Fielding is likely to play for the under-23s next week as he aims for a first 90 minutes in a Millwall shirt since pre-season. Luke Steele is due to go back to Nottingham Forest this month but he was at the Lions’ training ground earlier this week as the squad prepared for games against Luton and Newport.

Jayson Molumby has permission to play from parent club Brighton as he is set to see out the season at Millwall.

Rowett will assess the impact of a heavy December schedule on his squad before picking his side.

“What’s going to be difficult on the back of such a strong run of fixtures

is how many players have had to play through things and play all those games,” Rowett said. “We’re looking at that.

“Of course there are a few players that are desperate for an opportunity.

But I think we balance that off with the fact that we want to be as strong as we possibly can because the club has got a fine FA Cup tradition. We certainly wouldn’t want to go and make ten changes to the team and not view it as important.

“Also we know that Newport have got a really good tradition of knocking teams out of the cup in the last couple of years.

“It doesn’t matter what team we play, we’re going to have to be as competitive and play with the same quality we have in many other games recently.

“It’s going to be a difficult game but what we’re going to do is we might have to learn some things about one or two players.

“We should be able to give some of those opportunities to players and be a really good team still because those players have played in first-team matches.

“It will be nice to get to the point where it starts settling down and we can get that freshness into the players because there are quite a few of them who have ploughed through those games with unbelievable endeavour.

“You can just feel the effect of that with limited numbers.”

Rowett wants to bolster his squad this month with the Lions raising expectations they could potentially challenge for the play-offs this season.

Millwall currently have Jayson Molumby (Brighton), Bart Bialkowski (Ipswich) and Luke Steele (Nottingham Forest) on loan. Steele, signed to cover for the injured Frank Fielding, joined until this month and Rowett expects him to return to Forest.

Molumby and Bialkowski have been big successes so far, but Rowett explained the type of deals they strike in January will depend on talks with clubs.

“It’s really difficult to know that until you enter into negotiations with clubs,”

‘The loan market is a good market to use in the Championship’

Rowett said. “There are two schools of thought. One is to try to bring people in to benefit the club long-term, players being signed permanently or a loan with a view to a permanent move in place so we can at least turn it into a permanent if we want. That’s our priority in an ideal world.

“The second thought is are there some players out there that might be able to come in until the end of the season to give us that extra quality.

You’re always looking at that.

“The loan market is a good market to use in the Championship. Sometimes

one or two players that you can’t afford normally can give you that lift towards the end of the season.

“It’s about us getting as many points as we can and finishing as high up as we possibly can. Whichever we think is the most effective way to do that then that is what we’ll try to do in January.”

Rowett insisted he wouldn’t block the route of players who want to leave for regular football, but pointed to Aiden O’Brien as an example of someone who’s forced his way back into the first-team reckoning.

Rowett said: “I think we’re open to any scenario, really. Any player that hasn’t had that much game-time, who’s a first-team footballer who’s played games before, it’s hard to keep them without the opportunity to play games.

“In Aiden’s case he’s probably the one player in some ways who was really unlucky. He trained really well, but hadn’t had an opportunity.

It leaves the Lions short of options in midfield with Ryan Leonard also yet to resume training after his knee injury against Leeds United in October.

Billy Mitchell is set to get the chance to impress in the third round of the FA Cup against Newport County this Saturday.

But the Lions are trying to sign a midfielder during the January transfer window with only Mitchell currently backing up Irish duo Jayson Molumby and Shaun Williams.

Rowett gave an update to the News this week on Thompson.

“We always felt as though it could be a fairly serious one. He’s torn a couple of ligaments, there’s quite extensive damage to his ankle,” Rowett said.

“It was quite innocuous, really, the ball has hit his foot and he’s rolled his ankle.

“I think March is the earliest we’re going to get him back. I’m reluctant to be too specific with a time because we can’t be.

“It’s a tough one and it leaves us a little bit short in a key area. Thommo gives you something a little bit different to some of the other players.

“It’s something we’re going to have to think about.”
