21 sites across Southwark are given the go ahead for new council homes

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Twenty-one new council homes sites have been given the go-ahead in time for Christmas.

Councillor Leo Pollak, the cabinet member for new homes at Southwark Council, signed off the plans this week, adding the new sites to the 90 live building projects already in motion across the borough.

He argued the Conservative landslide in the general election was a “disappointing result for council house builders” but as a result “it is more important now than ever to be stepping forward to deliver genuinely affordable, secure, high-quality homes for our residents.”

The homes on each site will be built in collaboration with residents and at least

half will be prioritised for people who are in housing need in the immediate area or same estate.

Those residents who will be moved into pre-allocated homes will be able to decide on bathroom and kitchen colour and finish.

The construction will take place in tandem with wider estate improvement plans.

Other sites include the former Peckham Library and an ex-NHS building on Ann Moss Way in Rotherhithe. Several will see garages and parking spaces used for housing.

In early 2020 the council expects to announce further plans for larger council house-building projects, including newly purchased land and the first set of ‘rooftop’ homes, which will see new storeys added onto existing blocks.

Some homes are being created in a

partnership between the council and Leathermarket Community Benefit Society.

Cllr Pollak added: “I’m grateful to the local residents, TRAs and councillors we’ve spoken with to get to this stage, and am delighted to be continuing our brilliant community partnership with Leathermarket CBS, to help deliver a number of these council homes projects in Bermondsey and Borough.”

Southwark Council has committed to building 11,000 new council homes by 2043, one thousand of which it promised to complete between 2018 and 2022.

But on top of cuts in government funding, the council struggles to stem the loss of new homes through right-to-buy, whilst contending with a huge waiting list and an increasing number of people left homeless through problems affording private rent or section 21 “no fault” evictions.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Cockney tribute on the approach to The Den

By Michael Holland news@southwarknews.co.uk ‘Underneath the arches I dream my dreams away’, goes the old Flanagan & Allen song, whose rendition of Maybe It’s Because I’m A Londoner also incited many a pub singalong from the 1930s to the present day. Put the two together and mix them up with a few Pearly Kings and Queens and you have a recipe for success.

On Saturday 14th December a new mural that celebrates Cockneys, Pearly Kings and Queens and Londoners was

unveiled underneath the arches in Bolina Road, on the road to Millwall’s Den. The mural, by a team of artists that go by the name of Cockney Green, was created by Katie McGuinness, and her secretive partner Al, who had flown back from Spain especially to complete this artwork once the council gave the go ahead just two weeks ago. Since then they have cleaned the wall and replaced the grime with an honour to London and its people.

Katie, who lives on the Bonamy Estate, studied fine art at Chelsea Art College. She negotiated with the

council to get a mural, then organised Pearlies from all over London to sing the old Cockney favourites throughout the afternoon of the unveiling. Manze’s pie & mash shop in Tower Bridge Road then delivered 50 dinners to warm up those in attendance. Katie told the News: ‘London is a multicultural city but, sadly, Cockney traditions are fading… We believe that all children, regardless of ethnic background, should be taught about the traditions of where they live… We want to bring love and Cockney humour to everyone and brighten up the dark grimy areas to make people smile.’

Homeless paedophile faces years behind bars

By court reporter editor@southwarknews.co.uk A homeless paedophile who kidnapped an eight-year-old boy from a park toilet and abused him in his woodland lair is facing years in jail.

Shane Upton, 24, sexually assaulted the terrified child in his makeshift tent as police frantically searched for the lad in Burgess Park, Walworth, on June 17 this year.

The boy had been playing tennis with his brother as his mother looked on when he went to use the toilet a few yards away, Inner London Crown Court heard.

Jurors convicted Upton of kidnap, sexual assault on a child under 13, and two counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

He was remanded in custody ahead of sentencing on January 6 next year.

Adrian Amer, prosecuting, said: ‘The boy tells us that when he came out of a cubicle, he saw Shane Upton standing outside it.

“The man started talking to him and told him he was homeless and asked the boy to go to Southwark Housing with him so he could get a house.

“The boy said that the man locked in

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A mammoth 30-tonne fatberg has been removed from the sewers underneath Borough Market.

The rancid lump, stretching to 70 metres, was removed by Thames Water ahead of Christmas – and the body says it’s a reminder not to flush fat down the drain at Christmas.

Another ‘sewer beast’, made of cooking fat, wet wipes and sanitary products, was removed from a Pall Mall sewer weighing an astonishing 63 tonnes.

“Fatbergs are like monsters from the deep, lurking and growing under our feet, and the team worked around the clock to defeat these two before they could cause damage to our customers or the environment,” said Stephen Pattenden, of Thames Water.

Unlucky engineers from Thames Water had to use power tools to break up one of the fatbergs and carry it out by hand, as it contained concrete.

The smell “can be overpowering,” said Mr Pattenden. “It’s an extremely difficult job getting them out of our sewers. It’s cramped, hot and very unpleasant, especially when a chunk of fatberg is disturbed,” he added.

Thames Water has launched a campaign to remind people not to flush foodstuffs down the drain which causes the fatbergs.

Every year it has to deal with 75,000 blockages across its network, costing £18million.

It comes months after a 100 metre ‘Concreteberg’ was removed from underneath Islington, while a 40-tonne fatberg was also cleared from a Greenwich sewer last month.

In late 2017, Thames Water got rid of a mammoth 130 tonne Whitechapel fatberg.

Instead of putting oils and fats down the sink, experts recommend letting it cool before putting it into a container and then placing it into the bin.

“The complainant said that he tried to shout for help, but the man covered his mouth with his hands.

“He said that he felt scared and the man told him not to be scared.”

Upton then performed sex acts on him, the court was told.

“He said this happened for a minute and then it stopped and he did it again,” Mr Amer said.

Upton then took the boy out of the toilet’s emergency exit.

He walked the boy around Burgess Park and a nearby housing estate for nearly an hour, before taking him to his tent.

“The boy said that the man told him that he lived in a tent and took him to a tent somewhere in Burgess Park,” Mr Amer continued.

“The boy said that when they got in the tent the man went inside the tent and told him to come in.

“The boy said that he did not want to run away because he was scared and he knew that the man would catch him.

“He then describes going into a wooden cave made out of twigs and leaves. The man told him to lie down on his back.

“The man then pulled his trousers and pants down.

“The boy said that he was scared when

this was happening so he closed his eyes because he wanted it to stop.

“He said that the man stopped when he realised the police were outside the tent.

“The boy said that the man ran off when he realised that the police were there. He said police chased the man and he then ran to the police officers.

“The boy said that he was very scared so he pulled up his pants and trousers and ran out of the cave.

“He said that the incident lasted about three to four minutes and that when he was in the tent he could hear a helicopter.

“Police on foot and on horseback and from a police helicopter conducted a search of the park,’ said Mr Amer.

Police found Upton on top of the boy, with his jeans down below the waist committing a sexual act. He was chased and caught when he fell over.

Upton, of no fixed address, denied but was convicted on the remaining counts of kidnap, one charge of sexual assault, one of committing an offence with the intent to commit a sexual crime and two of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

The jury cleared Upton of two charges of assaulting an emergency worker and they werw earlier directed by the judge to clear him of a further count of sexual assault.

Justice charged after police use taser

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A man from Camberwell has been charged over drugs, stolen goods and driving offences after an incident in Herne Hill where a man was tasered.

Nineteen-year-old Justice Beckford, from Albany Road in Camberwell, was charged on Monday December 15 for cannabis possession, driving while

disqualified and without insurance and handling stolen goods.

He appeared in custody at Camberwell Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The charges follow a police incident at about 11am on Sunday, December 16, in Shakespeare Road in SE24.

A man using a moped that was suspected to have been stolen was arrested on suspicion of robbery after a pursuit with a taser deployed on Railton Road.

Three arrested for attempted murder

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Three men arrested on suspicion of attempted murder are believed to have been linked to the stabbing of a nineteen-year-old on Saturday.

At around 4pm on December 14, police were told a teenager had been found suffering from stab injuries at hospital in south London.

At the same time, officers in an unmarked police vehicle indicated for a car on South Lambeth Road to stop.

The car then collided with the police vehicle.

The three men inside were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, possession of an offensive weapon and dangerous driving.

At this stage it is believed they are linked to the victim but inquiries are ‘ongoing’.

A section 60 stop and search order was put in place until 7am on Sunday across parts of Southwark including SE1 and SE17.

The victim’s condition is said to be not life-threatening.

Prizes were handed out for best Christmas card design by Suhel Ahmed, of the business, who was also a former pupil at the school, just off Tower Bridge Road.

All the pupils received a Christmas gift from the Indian restaurant as part of the competition. The winner was pupil Olamide, who won the first prize, while students Brian and Raina came runners-up.

The winning design featured on the Tower Tandoori's annual Christmas card which went out to 50,000 homes in the local area.

Hutchinson, Tom Bradshaw, Jasyon Molumby, Jason McCarthy, Billy Mitchell and Ryan Sandford handed out gifts and Lions merchandise to the kids and their parents and guardians on Monday.

The players posed for photos and spoke to children and staff on their annual hospital visit.

“This is my third year since I’ve been here,” Hutchinson said. “It’s always something I like doing, I put my hand up straightaway to do it. It’s sad and the least we can do when the parents and kids are going through what they are is chat to them and try to take their mind off things and put a smile on their face. I can relate to it because I’ve got a little daughter and it would break my heart if we were in here.

“At this time of year kids want to be at home playing with their friends and being with their family at Christmas, but unfortunately they’re stuck in here.

“Anything I can do to put a little smile on their face or take their mind off what’s happening even for ten minutes is the least we can offer. We’re in a privileged position where we can do that.”

An Age UK event at the Lions’ ground aims to provide pensioners in the local area who might not otherwise get out of their home over Christmas with a day to remember on Thursday.

But after a sponsor pulled out of funding the event, the club has been left scrambling to meet the cost and to make sure it goes ahead as planned.

A fundraising bid to cover the expected £2,000 cost has so far only raised around £250 – leaving a shortfall that needs to be filled this week.

“Elderly people can get forgotten about at Christmas, so that’s why it’s important for us as a club to do something for people,” said Danielle Lake, of the Millwall Supporters’ Club.

“It’s important for them to get that social aspect. They don’t often have a chance to get out, and dress up, and go somewhere a bit fancy.”

The event will be a three-course meal, with a DJ, with dancing afterwards.

Around eighty pensioners with carers and Age UK staff are expected to attend.

Some of those will be from local care homes, said Ms Lake, while others might be Southwark pensioners who attend Age UK for social gatherings.

Other projects that the supporters’ club have helped include repairing of an emergency response vehicle that had been vandalised in Borough and relaying a garden for a young Lions fan to enjoy with her brother.

A builder has denied stabbing a Bermondsey father-of-one to death outside a children’s playground in Southwark Park.

Stephen O’Rourke, 47, is accused of murdering Rocky Djelal, 38, in Southwark Park on Halloween last year. Mr Djelal (pictured) had been attacked in broad daylight close to the children’s play area before dying of his wounds.

O’Rourke, of Grosvenor Park, Kennington, appeared in the dock of the Old Bailey on Friday in a grey suit to deny the charge of murder.

He was due to stand trial earlier this week but the court was told the case will now be heard on July 27 next year.

O’Rourke was remanded in custody.

Residents hoping legally to challenge the Canada Water Masterplan have reached their initial £7,000 target.

The 53-acre development, the largest in the borough’s history, was unanimously approved by councillors at the end of September.

The £3.3bn scheme will see the overhaul of vast swathes of Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays over the next fifteen years, bringing up to 3,000 new homes to the area and 20,000 new jobs.

A group of objectors launched a bid to overturn the permission, over fears of ‘segregation’ of social housing, overwhelmed transport routes, and negative impacts on local nature.

“We want a new shopping and town centre along with housing provision that serves the community, not a high-rise “destination” to compete with Canary Wharf,” state the group, made up of seven stakeholder groups including residents’ groups, as well as parents and school governors.

“We challenge “cut and paste” development which gives no thought to the local community and its environs.”

Now it has raised more than £7,000 and hopes to make a stretch target of £10,000. The scheme still needs to be approved by the Mayor of London, and the money will go towards representation at the hearing.

If that is unsuccessful, the campaign group pledges to raise another £20,000 to have the mammoth scheme overturned by the courts.

Council officials have previously described the scheme as an “exciting blueprint,” which would provide

much-needed social housing.

“We recognise some local people’s concerns around transport and the location of some of the new homes,” said Southwark Council’s Cllr Johnson Situ last month.

“There was a full discussion at planning committee with views expressed on both sides, but ultimately the decision was unanimously approved and we are continuing to work with all parties to improve on transport options in the area.”

bermondsey geyser spouts off

The leak, near the junction with Southwark Park Road, started in the early hours of Thursday morning on polling day and wasn’t fixed until late Friday afternoon.

“Many people can cope but I care for my son, he’s paralysed and my husband has had four strokes,” she said.

Ms Duke said there had been a lack of social care for elderly residents struggling to fetch water, as many of them could not get to the nearest water supply.

“It’s not good enough,” she said.

Voters feared they would be unable to access Cherry Garden Hall, a polling station right beside the high pressure leak, with Southwark Council rushing to reassure them the building was still accessible from the west side.

The Thames Water pipe was damaged during SGN gas works, not the nearby construction of Cycleway 4, and has now been fixed.

Borough Market turns 21

By Laura Burgoine Twenty one years after its rebirth as a retail market, Borough Market is celebrating its coming of age with a brand new look

Over 20 new traders have opened in an expanded produce zone, while a new communal dining space, Borough Market Kitchen, is serving up dishes from 20 stands, including Mei Mei, JUMA Kitchen, Mimo and Brindisa Kitchen.

A range of new and existing traders are set to move into the Green Market area, as well as maintaining their current location at Three Crown Square. The new Borough Market Kitchen – a plastic-free zone - will allow locals and visitors to sit down at communal tables made from recycled materials.

Over 1000 years old, Borough Market was predominantly a wholesale market for many years. The Market, in its current form, was born in November 1998 when pioneering traders Turnips, Brindisa and Neal’s Yard Dairy started to sell their produce directly to the public, and the Market cemented its position as a world class iconic food destination.

The Borough Market Kitchen is open between 10am and 5pm from Monday-Thursday and on Saturday) and 10am-6pm on Friday. The Borough Market Kitchen is now open. Borough Market is open everyday until Christmas day .

kevin@southwarknews.co.uk The people of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe gathered for a Christmas remembrance service with royalty this year.

Her Royal Highness Princess Anne made the trip to the Albin Memorial Garden at the edge of Southwark Park earlier this month to join in the popular service, which sees thousands of people attend.

It is organised by the world renowned funeral directors, Albins, who among other services brings Britain‘s fallen heroes home from battlefields and disaster zones across the globe. But their annual service is really a must-go for local people to remember loved ones who are no longer with us during this festive period.

The 69-year-old Princess Royal returned for her second visit to the service as it marked its 20 year anniversary.

The garden was created by the late Barry Albin-Dyer as a place to allow families from the area to remember and place the ashes of their loved ones. At the service, stars with personal messages were hung on a giant Christmas tree, doves were released, blessings given and it finished with a firework display.

Barry’s sons Simon and Jon Dyer, who now run the firm, told the News: “It was a great privilege to once again welcome Her Royal Highness Princess Royal to our 20th Memorial Garden Service. The evening, although cold, was attended by over 2,000 people, who came to remember their loved ones at this special time of year.”

The Conservatives won a handsome majority at the election, but there wasn’t much jubilation at 4am in morning at Southwark’s count on Tooley Street.

The short-lived chant in particular went down like a lead balloon, with Labour’s Neil Coyle using his victory speech to give them a dressing down for insensitivity.

But it also sparked embarrassment among some of the true blue gathered there, too. The Tory candidate for Peckham and Camberwell could be seen quickly whispering in the ears of assembled activists to ask if they wouldn’t mind toning it down a little please.

Talking rubbish!

As the election has come to a close, the Liberal Democrats have cleared out their campaign literature from their HQ on Southwark Street.

This has sparked an accusation of “extensive fly-tipping” from Labour councillor Richard Livingstone.

Bags of rubbish could be seen strewn across the pavement, including leaflets for parliamentary candidates.

“Surely as political parties we should all be trying to set the right example on this?” asked Livingstone.

Dual crossword Will Southwark and London lose out as PM looks to new gains in the north and Midlands?

oris Johnson has announced a Conservative spending spree in the Midlands and the north after the two regions swung from Labour in a historic landslide.

While Labour and the Lib Dems argue about whose fault it is key seats turned blue, and angry Remain voters call for electoral reform, saying the system is rigged, now is the time to push the Tories on what they’re going to promise in London.

Whatever people’s political persuasions, there is a compelling case for more help for places in London hardest hit by the financial crisis and austerity.

The housing crisis, NHS staff shortages, education cuts and youth violence are wounds that smart in Southwark.

Is Boris going to make us a new offer – or is it all about the north and Midlands now?

Here is to another year of telling your stories and keeping the powers-that-be on their toes

hether last week’s election was your Christmas wish or Christmas nightmare, it’s certainly taken its toll on many, whether standing, elected, canvassing or just keeping up with the drama.

Either way, it’s over now and we can all get back to what we really want to be doing in December – having Christmas fun.

Provisionally, 63.2 per cent of those eligible voted in Bermondsey and Old Southwark, compared to 67 per cent at the last election in 2017.

In Camberwell and Peckham the same figure was slightly higher, at 63.8 per cent compared with 67.1 per cent two years ago.

The most politically engaged seat in Southwark was Dulwich and West Norwood, at 69.87 per cent, compared with 71.9 per cent in 2017.

In Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Neil Coyle triumphed, increasing his majority by more than 3,000.

The hotly tipped Liberal Democrats saw their share go down by 4.5 per cent and the Tories’ rise by 3.6. The Brexit Party trailed behind.

Camberwell and Peckham and Dulwich and West Norwood had similar Labour landslides – but, unlike Coyle, both saw their majority fall slightly.

Harriet Harman’s hold over her seat is secure, and one of Labour’s safest.

She commands a majority of 33,780 and a 71.3 per cent voter share.

Helen Hayes may have lost 846 votes compared to 2017, but it didn’t make much of a dent in her 27,000 majority.

In Bermondsey and Old Southwark, the Greens stood aside for the Lib Dems, who had their eye on Simon Hughes’ former constituency as a key target.

But Humaira Ali failed to gain momentum against Coyle, and their line that a vote for firm-Remainer Coyle was a vote for Brexit didn’t wash with voters.

Dulwich and West Norwood was a key unite to remain seat, where the Lib Dems stepped down to give way for Green party co-leader Jonathan Bartley.

He may not have won but the strategy still paid off. Bartley leapfrogged the usual runners up, the Conservatives,

to second place and increased the party’s share of votes by fourteen per cent.

Camberwell and Peckham was the only seat with an open contest.

Without a strong Lib Dem political presence in near 40 years with Harman as its MP, the Tories came second with a fairy paltry 6,478 votes.

They were followed by the Lib Dems and Greens, both of whom increased their voter share by around three per cent.

Number-crunching seems to confirm the Tories swept up the Brexit vote; all three Southwark Brexit Party candidates lost the deposits needed to stand.

Labour has had its worst result on record, nationally, since the 1930s.

It has lost seats that have been

continuously red for a century, there will be no people’s vote on Brexit, and Scottish independence has suddenly become much more likely.

But, for Southwark’s MPs there’s a silver lining. Coyle has seen off the threat of deselection. His dire warnings that Labour was unelectable under Corbyn are vindicated.

Harman, twice a previous interim Labour leader, will be coming in from the cold and is well positioned to rebuild consensus.

Helen Hayes is now an experienced MP with a huge majority who is untainted by public spats or past time in government.

Any of the three could be in line for a promotion, but when it comes to a possible caretaker leader, surely Harman is a shoe-in?

The Green Party had their biggest swing in the country in Dulwich and West Norwood.

In the constituency, which held an overwhelming Labour majority, a Green surge pushed the Tories into third place. Green co-leader Jonathan Bartley, who stood on a Unite to Remain pact ticket, had a clear run after the Lib Dems stood down.

The Streatham local increased the Green’s share of votes by fourteen per cent; the highest in any seat.

Across the country, the party achieved 60 per cent more votes than the last election – with a total of 850,000 - but failed to gain any more MP. “As long as Labour doesn’t embrace electoral reform it’s just going to be lining up the next Conservative government,” Bartley said.

Hughes blasts lib dem leadership but rules out return to politics

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Sir Simon Hughes has skewered Jo Swinson’s tenure of the Liberal Democrats, saying every decision since she took over as leader from Vince Cable has been wrong.

Speaking on national television last week, the ex-Bermondsey MP said: “Every single decision since Jo became leader and Ed Davey became deputy leader has been the wrong decision.”

He added: “We’ve thrown most people under the bus and it’s our fault.”

The party’s miserable performance came in spite of expected gains from initial polls and a pact with other Remain parties.

But key Remain and former Lib Dem constituencies – including Bermondsey and Old Southwark - went Labour or Conservative.

Hughes blasted “every strategic decision” made by the Liberal Democrat leadership in the run up to the election saying: “They decided to go for revoking article 50 having ignored the referendum, they decided that they could argue that was because we might be a majority government, incredible, incredible, nobody believes it.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Labour’s Florence Eshalomi, the Lambeth and Southwark Assembly Member, was successfully elected as the new MP for Vauxhall in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Eshalomi took the seat with 31,615 votes, giving her a healthy majority of nearly 20,000.

Vauxhall had previously been held by Labour’s long-standing Kate Hoey, who was noted for her markedly pro-Brexit stance.

The Liberal Democrats’ Sarah Lewis came a distant second with 12,003 votes, followed in third place by the Conservatives’ Sarah Bool on 9,422 votes.

Jacqueline Bond, of the Green Party, achieved 2,516 votes; Andrew McGuinness from the

Brexit Party got 641 ballots; and Independent Salah Faissal achieved 136 votes.

“Thank you Vauxhall residents for this honour to represent you and for putting your faith in me,” said Ms Eshalomi on Friday.

“It was time for change. I’m truly gutted for candidates that were not re-elected.

“The people of Vauxhall need a Labour Government and I will continue to fight for a fairer society for us all.”

Separately, two Southwark Council councillors who had stood for election to Parliament were not successful in their bids during the election.

Southwark Council’s deputy leader, Rebecca Lury, stood for the Labour Party in St Albans, but in the event did not manage to win the seat.

Cooper, achieved nearly 29,000 votes.

Leanne Werner, a Southwark Labour councillor for South Bermondsey ward, had put her hat in the ring to be the next MP for Kingston and Surbiton.

The seat was held by the now acting co-leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Ed Davey.

“A huge thank you to everyone who voted for me and supported me throughout this campaign,” said Ms Werner on social media. “A big shout out to [members who have worked tirelessly around the clock.

“Despite the outcome of this election I remain committed to building a better Britain for the many.”

While all three of Southwark’s seats have remained Labour with healthy majorities, the party has had a disastrous showing nationally, with its worst showing since 1935.

However, he later rowed back on some of his comments, saying: “Some of my criticisms were too personal, and I apologise.”

Hughes told the News that his criticisms were directed at the strategy of the party leadership, and not at the Liberal Democrats in Bermondsey and Old Southwark.

The party’s candidate Humaira Ali lost to Labour’s Neil Coyle, who increased his majority at the election.

“I’m happy to congratulate Neil Coyle on his reelection,” said Hughes.

“Humaira in her first-ever parliamentary campaign did very well, she did well at hustings, she was a very energetic and personable candidate and I don’t think any failings we had in Bermondsey can be addressed to her.”

He said his previous comments had “probably been too personal,” but added: “All the people who responsibility for these kind of decisions … they made the wrong call.”

Hughes ruled out any return to front-line Liberal Democrat politics as the party scrambles for a new leader, telling the News he had made a pledge to serve a current four-year term as the Chancellor of London South Bank University without being politically involved.

Boris prank leaves Derby fan seeing red

The fan, who named herself as Angela, said that Lions fans picked her up and put her on their shoulders while chanting: “Boris Johnson is a lion he hates Corbyn” in the wake of last week’s election.

“To the group of drunk Millwall ‘fans’ who just came and picked me up on their shoulders chanting ‘Boris Johnson is a lion he hates Corbyn’”, said the blonde-haired fan.

“1 I don’t appreciate being manhandled and 2 I look nothing like Boris bloody Johnson!

“Should be ashamed of yourselves.”

She added: “Millwall, please control your fan base.”

However, Lions fans were quicker to see a funnier side, with one responding: “On behalf of all proper Millwall fans sincere apologies and congratulations on winning the election.”

Another added: “Finally a positive story surrounding Millwall.”

The viral post was shared more than 13,000 times. However, the Twitter user added: “Please stop retweeting this it isn’t funny.”

lib dem defeated by remainer

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Humaira Ali says at least she’s lost to a Remainer, claims it’s far from game over for the Lib Dems in Southwark, and admits the Article 50 campaign messaging “pissed off” voters.

Given she had once been odds-on favourite to take the seat, was the exit poll a shock? “In the last few days it was becoming very obvious that we were being squeezed.

“We really put up a good fight to the end,” she says, downplaying the result in what was a key target Remain alliance seat.

“Because our policy is to stop Brexit, right towards the end we could see that we had to beat the Tories more than beating Labour.”

In a pre-election interview with this newspaper, Ali had said: “Labour aren’t on a Remain manifesto and if you’re standing for a political party, you stand on that manifesto.

“So irrespective of [Neil’s position], I would say there’s no such thing as a Labour Remain MP.” But she now backtracks, arguing it’s not so bad as: “to lose to Neil Coyle is still losing to a Remainer.”

What went wrong for the Lib Dems?

“People were saying that they really missed [former Lib Dem MP] Simon [Hughes] and wanted the Liberal Democrats back. I’m new. I thought I’d have two years to knock on doors and for everyone to get to know me, but then there was a snap election.

“How do you get to 96,000 people in a few weeks? On top of that there is such transience here now.”

She also wants to “call out” what she says has been “sexist and misogynistic” criticism of the leader nationally.

But does she agree with Hughes’ comments?

“I might have campaigned with a different angle, but I’m not going to say much more than that.”

Does she accept committing to revoking Article 50 turned voters against

“On Article 50 the messaging was all wrong. We co-founded the people’s vote and in the event of an overwhelming majority we would revoke.

“The primary aim of this has always been a people’s vote. But normal Lib Dem voters were pissed off and leavers who used to support Simon were annoyed.”

Ten years ago the Lib Dems were running Southwark Council in coalition and had one of the safest seats in the House. Ali claims they are “by no means” a spent force and will continue as effective opposition to Labour at Tooley Street.

Furthermore: “I challenged Neil at the hustings and I’ll openly challenge him again. The policies coming out his mouth are Lib Dem policies. You are in the wrong party Neil!”

Voters trusting Boris Johnson more than Jeremy Corbyn is ‘shameful and harmful’ for me and the party says Neil Coyle, blasting Corbyn’s claim that he ‘won the argument’ as ‘arrogant hubris’

Coyle had a bittersweet election night after holding his seat with an increased majority while, nationwide, his party posted its worst performance since the 1930s.

In his election victory speech, Coyle said: “We have to face the reality that despite voters acknowledging that Johnson is a liar and untrustworthy, they chose a Conservative government over a Labour alternative.

“That is shameful and harmful for me personally and for the Labour Party and I hope, I genuinely hope and I applaud Labour members who

gave their all for a Labour government up and down the country - that we come together and we fight for a better party and a better future for our country.”

At the count he told the News: “No leader should stay on after such a catastrophic defeat. Every single leader in our party’s political history has taken responsibility for our election results.”

He has hit out at the shadow cabinet for agreeing to an election the party was not ready for, said it was an “shameless insult to voters” that Corbyn and [shadow Chancellor John] McDonnell had not resigned immediately, and responded to Corbyn’s claim Labour “won the argument” with its new policies as “nonsensical”.

“Winning votes is winning the argument,” he said, “being in government improving people’s lives. Leaving people exposed to Brexit, experiencing homelessness and reliant on food banks is not winning. I hope members and voters see Corbyn’s nonsensical claim for the arrogant hubris it is.”

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Helen Hayes has refused to say whether Corbyn, Brexit or refusing to join the Remain alliance cost Labour the election, and will not comment on who she thinks should be the next party leader.

Speaking to the News after the shock election result, the Dulwich & West Norwood MPs said she was “delighted and extremely honoured” to be reelected, but admitted the level of Labour’s national electoral collapse was “completely devastating”. It was a really complex election, and “difficult in so many ways as Brexit cut through many historic loyalties,” she argued.

But she refused to say what – or who – went wrong for Labour: “The time will come to properly analyse,” she said. “It is a really big job, the task of understanding why we lost so many seats. This is a campaign of 650 campaigns at local level.”

Did Corbyn cost them the election and will she now, finally, openly criticise his leadership? “I don’t think it’s helpful on such a painful day to immediately apportion blame. The main discussion today is how we will help all those in this community unable to make ends meet.”

Corbyn is going but exactly when is unclear. Would she back Harriet Harman as a leader, caretaker or otherwise?

She refused to confirm either way, telling the News: “This is something that needs to be worked out in the next weeks and months.”

Hayes said her campaign took her to marginal constituencies including Putney – which did go red – and Kensington – which didn’t. She describes Labour’s Putney win as a ‘small glimmer of hope’, alongside returning Rosie Duffield in Canterbury.

But in Kensington, the non-Tory vote was split between Labour, the Lib Dems and Greens - the Tories took it.

Those split votes would be enough for a majority over the Tories. So did Labour lose the election because it refused to join the Remain alliance?

“The bigger phenomenon in the election was aggressive campaigning by the Lib Dems which split the vote and their extremely dishonest bar charts,” Hayes argued. “They were never going to win Kensington and they cost Labour it.”

She added: “The Remain pact was nothing more than a self-interested campaign that backfired.”

How will Labour recover? “I will keep on fighting for my community every single day as I have been doing in the last four years in the face of what Boris Johnson does. He is the opposite of our values here and I have no doubt we face an appalling time with him in government. We need to be rebuilding trust one day and one household at a time.”

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Harriet Harman has not denied suggestions she could become a “caretaker leader” for the Labour Party as she calls on Corbyn to resign.

The MP, who has held her seat since 1987, says Corbyn must step down. So far, he has only confirmed he will not lead the party at the next election but is expected to stay on for months.

The News has contacted Harman since the election in regards to whether she will rule out a temporary leader role, but as yet has had no reply.

Harman was notably absent from the party’s national election campaign, and stayed put in London’s safest Labour seat rather than campaign nationally.

Now she has described Labour’s performance as an “abject failure to inspire confidence”.

As the results were announced she said: “Although this is a great result for

us, this overall nationally is a terrible result which will have a terrible impact on people here.” She continued: “But we must not succumb to dismay and despair about the impact this will have on people in Camberwell and Peckham and people round the country.

“We must be absolutely determined to make the change in the party that is necessary so that we can be an effective opposition, so that we can command confidence, as an alternative party of government.”

Green gains increase their call for electoral reform

what’s on A 150-year-old performance for today

Invisible man seen in village Most of us, at some point, have wished for the power of invisibility, yearning for the endless possibilities it would provide for eavesdropping on conversations, robbing banks, absconding from restaurants and free travel, etc., writes Carolyn Hart Taylor...

HG Wells tapped straight into this human desire with his 1897 science fiction novel, The Invisible Man, and it is that ‘if only’ child within us that keeps us hooked.

Adapting this story of invisibility for the stage immediately presents its challenges. Derek Webb rises to the occasion with his adaptation in this play.

Imaginative sets really enhance a performance and this production ticks those boxes, transporting us back in time to the dimly lit, foggy streets of the village of Iping - A perfect setting for the prickly scientist Griffin (Shaun Chambers) to act out the benefits of invisibility gained from his scientific endeavours. Bandaged, wearing sunglasses and declaring “he has to walk around naked in order to remain invisible”, makes you want to laugh out loud. Combined with a dastardly menacing voice over, you’ll think you’re on a ghost train.

Itching to ditch his bandages and reap the full benefits of invisibility, he declares “I believe in a free market”. Themes of challenging the capitalist system have been interpreted from reading Orwell’s novel, but you’d be hard pushed to apply them to this play whose appeal lies in its lighthearted, jumbled up events that are a pure joy to watch, and allow for some festive escapism.

Humour goes hand in hand with the ridiculous so this tale is positively perfect for laughs. It provides too, with elements of Keystone Cops, slapstick, Carry On, and a bit of panto with Mrs Hall, (Mathew Parker) bringing an element of a money-obsessed Widow Twankey.

When harassing the scientist for his late rent, she tells him: “Mrs Hall is ailing for a shilling”, showing us that the perks of invisibility do not keep the wolves at bay.

The cast of three playing several roles each do a grand job of making sense of a madcap fast-paced play.

If you’re looking for some carefree festive fun, this play delivers.

After breakfasting on cream mixed with two tablespoons of rum, a pint of champagne for tea, and later on a raw egg beaten into a glass of sherry, I was quite ready for a one-man performance of A Christmas Carol, writes Michael Holland...

Not me, of course, I had meatballs with pasta; that’s how Charles Dickens prepared for his public readings.

Using Dickens’ original scripts John O’Connor recreates the popular readings that the great writer performed 150 years ago, by playing all the parts, with all the accents and their varying intonations and undulations. Whether he be a small girl or a wizened ghost, O’Connor painted vivid scenes in our heads. With the minimum of props and set, the actor takes us expertly through the night before Christmas. The night when Ebenezer Scrooge, a man who had fallen into a life of misery, was given the chance to live a life of happiness if he so wished.

It took Scrooge, however, a night of abject horror and a haunted journey back through his past life, from when he was a happy and carefree child to being an old man who claimed to ‘like darkness indoors because it is cheap’.

On the ghostly tour of his past he looked on as people spoke ill of him. Ebenezer was also shown the future, and it was not one to look forward to. Even so, notwithstanding his niggardly existence, the spectre offered him a chance of

redemption if he could change his miserly ways.

Best of all, for me, was meeting and adoring Mr & Mrs Fezziwig, a couple with hearts full of happiness, joy, kindness and generosity - All the human traits that Scrooge once possessed but had now left behind in his pursuit of money.

Yes, A Christmas Carol has whole swathes of Dickens own life within in its chapters; his memories of being poor and in debt, and the consequences of a harsh society that put his family into jail instead of reaching out a helping hand.

But his writing was a catalyst for change.

And A Christmas Carol is timeless.

While O’Connor shows the poor making the best they can from very little, so 4 million children live in poverty in the real world. On the very day that a sick boy has to sleep on a cold hospital floor while the Prime Minister refuses to acknowledge his existence, so Bob Cratchit struggles to provide for his family and crippled son.

Where is our Dickens for today? Who is standing up for those that need it now, in 2019?

John O’Connor is the perfect storyteller for this work at this time. And there is a joyous, happy ending, so Merry Christmas everyone.

Three sisters journey through war Chekhov’s Three Sisters is interpreted in a new light by poet and playwright Inua Ellams. The result, a spectacular production that puts a spotlight on the atrocities that occurred during Nigeria’s 1967 war with Biafra, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor...

Along with others, the three Onuzo sisters, Lolo, (Sarah Niles), Nne Chukwu (Natalie Simpson), and Udo (Racheal Ofori), exiled through war from their beloved Lagos, struggle to adapt to life in Biafra. Despite their comfortable home, luxuries and good education, the sisters never really show confidence, mirroring their experience as women facing the impact of colonialism, misogyny, relationships and war. “Soldiers have purpose,” cries Udo, longing for recognition.

Abosede, (Ronke Adekoluejo) epitomises the corruptive nature of power in the wrong hands. Marriage gives her status, and strutting defiantly through situations she barks orders, chillingly telling Lolo to throw her aunt out because being elderly “She has no purpose”. Audience reaction to her is palpable, her cut-throat nature dominates the action and we long for her downfall.

Resourceful, the women keep things together thorough the mayhem, but equally show how excluded they are

from making political decisions, an arena dominated by military men.

War inevitably brings chaos and the set is used effectively to show that journey.

Opening with a majestic colonial home, we later witness a barren landscape where crops are sparse. Ironically, these scenes showing destruction are the ones that allow us to see how the politicallyoverlooked women struggle through, rescuing and ensuring people are fed.

Despite being forced to concede to a dominant Nigerian military starving, butchering and eradicating the Igbo people, unremovable is female poet, (Amarachi Attamah). Audiences are transfixed as she looms hauntingly amongst the backdrops in blood red scarlet robes.

Lyrically chanting Igbo, she embodies the aura of a wise ancestral spirit visiting to warn of the foolhardiness of war, to mourn for the massacred and the destruction of land.

This is an opportunity to see an impressive, though lengthy play that exposes the destruction that Biafra’s Civil War had on the people and landscape.

Goodies and baddies in Bromley

The noise levels were ramped up throughout the show, dipping only during the courting scenes between Aladdin and Princess Jasmine, which elicited a few expressions of disgust from the younger section of the audience whenever they kissed, and peaking with top notch booing as the baddie Abanazar appeared in a cloud of evil smoke, writes Michael Holland...

Yes, panto season is well and truly upon us once again, and once again Bromley’s Churchill Theatre has produced another dazzling extravaganza of colour, song, dance and fun.

Biggins is top of the bill as Widow Twankey but does little for his money, allowing others to do all the leg work, with most of the laughs coming from Rikki Jay,(Wishee) a rather loveable Cockney character, and Max Fulham(Washee) with his glove puppet Gordon, who is a bit of a ladies man - or monkey - and usually gets the last word with his puppet master, telling him at one point to, ‘Slow down and take a breath’. Very funny stuff from both of them. Or all three if you count Gordon.

It is the usual fare with goodies and baddies and lovestruck youngsters.

The jokes are scatalogical for the kids (an elephant leaves a poo on the stage to much mirth) and risqué for the grown ups, although, some of the younger generation nervously

laughed at the Clever Dick gag… But they happily shouted ‘keep away from the balls’ with no sense of innuendo whenever anyone got near the balls.

The ‘Aaaah’ Factor came via the little darlings from the Laura Bruce Dance Academy as they twirled around in their outfits; the spectacle was provided by the energetic ensemble who sang and danced their way through the show, and the fun comes from Wishee and Washee, as described above.

More than anything a pantomime is about good over evil and a happy ending. But more than that it is about costume changes. The dancers went through some amazing glittery outfits but there is nothing like a Dame for extravagant clobber. Biggins began rather conservatively, though after some on stage banter with a man from Biggin Hill, the costumes got more outrageous every time he walked out from the wings. At one point he was a Mummy Panda with her two cubs clinging on for dear life, and for the finale he flew in as an Easter egg. Oh yes he did!

Aladdin is a lot of good fun. The children loved it. The adults loved it. Panto is very much a big part of Christmas that families can do together and I hope that they do.

Lifting the lid on Peek Frean's biscuit tin

Part of the Chriostmas tradition is a tin of biscuits, here in Bermondsey, everyone would have one from Peek Frean, but these were just for biscuits.

Peek Frean was known for its decorative biscuit tins. The contents were quite delicious but the tins, well, they were something else. The firm employed fine artists to design them, in all shapes, sizes and colours of the rainbow. Every coronation, celebration and historical event was depicted on a PF tin. Many are very collectable and very few people threw them away. Once every custard cream, every bourbon, every crumb had been removed from them they were put to other uses.

A tin of buttons is an inheritance and one tin can be passed and added to through the generations. Normally once the elder relative passes away the next female in line takes charge of the button tin. Opening one is a wonder to behold; colours and textures spill out into the light once more, glinting and shining like treasure. They can go back generations and each has a story to tell.

You can trace a whole family tree through the button tin. There are the pearly, decorative ones that perhaps adorned a special wedding dress. Imagine the tiny little pictorial buttons that decorated baby’s cardigan as she giggled in her pram or the big, distinctive shiny brown cracked leather ones that fastened the reluctant schoolboy’s duffel coat, keeping him warm on a foggy November day.

There are the creased old cards of buttons that home workers threaded to make a few pennies and were sold at the haberdashers’ shops in The Blue. Delve a little deeper and unearth a Brownies badge, a union badge, or a badge with strange initials conjuring

up secret societies (which will remain just that!)

It is common to find the odd military cap badge in a button tin but whose was it? You can find no uncle or grandfather in the services so where did it come from? Was it a maiden aunt’s lost love, a token from some clandestine affair? Not so exciting, it could have been found on the pavement, mistaken for a coin and stashed away!

The age of the flapper, the dancing girl twirling her pearls, is represented with the cheery coloured glass buttons and, for the more mature lady, Art Deco creations. Those geometric designs echo the glamorous cinema architecture of the time. The Astoria or the Regal down the Old Kent Road reflected this age of glamour and girls done up to the nines in new coats with glittering buttons would queue up with their beau for the latest ‘flick’.

Sometimes the material still attached to a button gives an idea of the type of garment to which it once belonged. Remember there were many haberdashers in Bermondsey (and Deptford). Was that green swirly fabric a frock bought in Hobbs or maybe Pomeroy’s emporium? We will never know, unless an old photo turns up with said frock in it.

Glinting beneath all the everyday

buttons you find a black, shiny nugget; a Victorian Whitby Jet boot button.

These would have been attached to little leather ankle boots and the wearer would have purchased a button hook to aid buttoning up the stiff leather eyelets. It was not just women wearing Jet buttoned-boots, they were also put onto children’s shoes but only Sunday best. Those who could not afford Jet made do with French Glass ones.

All sorts of material were used for buttons: the scrap ends of leather, bone, shell and wood were all local products that could be turned into something fabulous. However, there are no button firms in Bermondsey so they must have been transported from elsewhere. As an aside, did you know there are people frightened of buttons? The name for this phobia is Koumpounophobia. So now you know.

Every button tin could tell similar stories. Once there were haberdashers on every street corner but they have disappeared, along with all their ribbons, trimmings and bows.

Now, buttons are not so interesting.

Mass produced in China or replaced by zips and Velcro, they have lost their allure, which makes those treasures kept in that Peek Frean tin so very special.

Christmas of yesteryear What is Christmas all about? Shopping ‘til you drop for bags of sparkly plastic? Stressing whether the turkey will be big enough?

Dragging yourself to yet another carol concert?

Chill out! It wasn’t always like this - come on a nostalgia trip and learn the true meaning of Christmas...

Christmas Day: The tinsel tree (from Woolies in the Blue, of course) stands resplendent on the table. It’s bacon and eggs for breakfast, then a small glass of something alcoholic to start the day off right. The kids get their presents: a doll or a colouring book from East Street! The relatives arrive and are swiftly herded into the front room for drinks while Mother prepares the dinner. She shoves the chicken, freshly dispatched by Mr Childs in Galleywall Road, not turkey, into the oven then reaches beneath the sink for her bottle of sherry - and a pint glass...

Dinner is served! Everyone puts on their paper hats and digs in. Silence. The wine is opened and flowing.

Then the Christmas pudding appears, set aflame with a good dousing of brandy, of course. The cheese is out - a big slab of cheddar from Young’s in Tower Bridge Road, and one of smelly Stilton, so pass the port. Then it’s a nap before the party begins.

Mother, now on the Drambuie, returns to the kitchen to make sandwiches and heats up sausage rolls while the pickles (Crosse & Blackwell, who else?) are passed around in a dish. There’s cheese and pineapple on cocktail sticks, more sausages and even glace cherries on the snowballs, plus plenty of beer kept cool out in the yard The piano is out, the carpet is rolled up and the songs begin. They all do their party piece - it could be a monologue, a song or an act. Then off they stagger into the night - before doing it all again on Boxing Day!

and the famous mrs peek’s puddings

During World War One, one of the Peek Frean salesmen, a Mr Pearson, was called up and whilst away fighting, his wife -in an unusual move for the company- was allowed to take over his round.

She was known by the shopkeepers as “Mrs Peek.”

From all accounts, this doesn’t appear to be linked to the iconic pudding of the same name, as the Mrs Peek’s Christmas Pudding originally went under the name of the “Santa Claus Pudding.”

In the Bermondsey Biscuit Factory, puddings were @WasteNotTheatre

stored in the railway arches that run along the edge of the factory as the arches kept the puddings at a cool, even temperature.

At the museum, you can see a Mrs Peek’s Christmas Pudding and a bottle of Mrs Peek’s Christmas Pudding Wine on display as well as a sweatshirt from the company’s Christmas Pudding Race, where employees raised money for cancer research.

Dulwich Hamlet boss Gavin Rose has plenty to ponder as he tries to guide them out of their slump

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET’S miserable season plunged to a new low as they were knocked out of the FA Trophy in the first round by Hornchurch of the Isthmian League.

It was a deserved defeat for the Hamlet, who didn’t really test home goalkeeper Joe Wright after the seventh minute when he saved an effort from Lionel Ainsworth.

The hosts, who are fourth in the seventh tier, took over after that and always gave the impression they would make the breakthrough and have enough to progress to the second round. They only needed one goal, scored by Nathan Cooper in the 53rd minute in front of an attendance of 454, and Gavin Rose’s side couldn’t muster a response.

Hornchurch, managed by the experienced former Stevenage and Gilliangham boss Mark Stimson, could have gone in front much earlier. Chris Dickson had their first chance but couldn’t find the target in the eighth minute.

Former Millwall attacker Lewis White almost had an opportunity to get in on goal but Wright quickly saw off the danger.

The next chance, in the eighteenth minute, fell again to White but he tried to pick out Ainsworth rather than testing Wright himself.

Dulwich’s Dylan Kearney tried his luck from distance but was off-target as a poor first half ended in stalemate.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JOSH ADEJOKUN scored the only goal of the game against Deal Town as Fisher got back to winning ways in the SCEFL Premier Division last Saturday.

Adejokun’s 65th-minute goal gave the Fish a first league win since November 9 and moved them up to fifteenth in the table.

Ajay Ashanike’s side travel to Erith Town this Saturday before a trip to

after the break as the hosts again took up the running. And they got their reward eight minutes into the second period when Cooper volleyed past goalkeeper Preston Edwards.

Quade Taylor then should have brought Wright into the action but he missed the chance at the back post.

Hornchurch attacker Jordan Clark had two opportunities to put the tie firmly beyond Dulwich’s reach but he couldn’t find the target with one effort before Edwards saved his second attempt.

The home side were dangerous on the break and created a number of chances with Dickson firing a free-kick over with sixteen minutes left.

Two minutes later Edwards had to race from his goal to clear a throughball before he saved from Matt Johnson.

Rose sent on Dominic Vose for Kearney with time running out but the pattern of the match was the same.

Hornchurch spurned another chance when Johnson and Dickson combined but the latter sent his shot wide.

The Hamlet finally stirred in the attacking third but Vose shot over the bar before, in the last minute, Nyren Clunis crossed from the left but Taylor couldn’t steer the ball towards goal with his volley.

There were five minutes of addedtime but Hornchurch defended stoutly and Wright wasn’t tested again.

Dulwich are back in National League South action this Saturday when they travel to Hungerford Town looking for a first league win since August.

They then host Hampton & Richmond Borough at Champion Hill on Boxing Day. Both fixtures kick off at 3pm.

Tom Chambers and Maliq Morris have extended their loan deals AFC Croydon Athletic the following weekend, both kicking off at 3pm.

Meanwhile, Fisher have extended the loan deals of Tom Chambers and Maliq Morris from Dulwich Hamlet for another month.

STANSFELD CONTINUED their recent run of good form in the SCEFL First Division by beating FC Elmstead 2-0 away from home last weekend.

Stansfeld started on the front foot and Joe Minter sent in an early corner that Billy Shinners connected with and he flashed his header just wide.

The visitors were controlling the game and looking a threat from set-pieces against the vulnerable hosts.

Stansfeld were further boosted when the hosts were reduced to ten men for violent

play in the 38th minute.

From the resulting free-kick, Minter whipped in a dangerous ball which was won by Lennie Wise at the far post as he headed back across the goal and Shinners applied the finish.

Stansfeld took that lead into the break thanks to a superb save from goalkeeper Charlie Cottrell.

Elmstead pressed forward for an equaliser but Stansfeld defended well and always looked dangerous on the break.

But in the 64th minute, Stansfeld again had to rely on Cottrell who made a fine save from a free-kick form the edge of the box.

Stansfeld continued to get more opportunities on the counter-attack as Elmstead took more risks.

And they wrapped up the points when this time Shinners turned provider to release Ryan Hassan who raced through to

finish low and double his side’s lead.

Stansfeld are seventh in the table and host Holmesdale this Saturday.

Meanwhile, Stansfeld Reserves lost 4-1 to local rivals Tudor Sports after playing just under an hour of the game with ten men.

In the world of competitive table tennis, it’s illegal to use any bat that isn’t red and black. On a rainy Tuesday night, in a sports hall opposite The Den in south Bermondsey, Fusion founders John Dennison and Martin Smith are cutting foam to make bats for the players in their club.

Some of the highest ranking table tennis players in the UK are volleying back and forth along the row of 12 tables. Players at the club range from age six to 78. Fusion, which started in 1989, has been going for five years in this location and is renowned as one of the biggest table tennis clubs in London and the South East.

“We have people who are complete beginners to the top in the country,” Martin said.

John played table tennis internationally in Jamaica and competed in the Commonwealth Games in 1985. He started his career aged 16, playing at youth clubs and adventure parks. Starting off in Kilburn then Hackney, he travelled around the capital playing in competitions, training in East London where the top Essex players competed.

Martin, a social worker who lives in East Dulwich, describes himself as self-taught and still plays in veteran competitions all over the world; Las Vegas last year and recently at the European veteran tournament in Hungary where there were 3500 players over 50, as well as a tournament

for over 90s.

“Table tennis was a dying sport when I was coming up,” Martin said. “It’s not on TV, schools weren’t really teaching it; the only time you’d play at school was on a rainy day.”

While now top players compete in the premiere league, John says: “The pinnacle back then was to play for your county.”

Fusion has a team in the British premiere division; the number 4 in England plays at the club. The coaches adhere to the 10,000 hours rule when it comes to the sport. “But it’s the quality of the practice that’s important,” John said.

There’s also specific styles of “starter” bats. “You don’t start with a Porsche bat,” Martin says. The most expensive bats weigh in at £500. “The most important thing is having someone proficient to guide you and find a bat

that’ll help you improve.”

“Parents bring their kids and they come in with bats from JD Sports that are not even legal. They need to be red and black to be legal,” Martin said.

The club runs classes for adults and children alike; when you come in to learn, they assess your levels and ask you what you want to achieve. “Some pick up quick, some end up coming seven days a week,” Martin said. “We have people coming from as far as Kent. It’s a good set up for kids along with the quality of our coaching and the standard of the players we have here.”

“We develop the kids to be part of a community,” he continued. “There’s different levels and they find their part in the club.”

“Our philosophy is we’re here for everyone, no one’s a VIP. Everyone gets equal treatment. We look after the

elite, and build their character.”

The matches draw spectators of around 30-40 people; there’s seven home matches this season and anyone can attend.

Fusion is a labour of love and considering there’s not the sponsorship and funding that exists in other sports, it’s hard to remain viable. Most of the staff are volunteers. The club’s bills are £30,000 a year; Martin and John lay the flooring themselves to save money, and even changing light bulbs requires renting a cherry-picker because the ceilings are so high. Kings University use the space for their practices and matches, and on evenings and weekends it’s full up with regulars - but they’re encouraging groups to get in touch about using the tables during the day. Any businesses looking to support a local, social initiative, would also be gratefully welcomed.

After decades of devotion, John and Martin are still very much in the game.

“I don’t really play now, I just coach, but my favourite thing about the game is the competitive aspect and the physical aspect,” John said. “It’s a sport; it’s not a game.”

Martin chimes in: “I love how table tennis is like chess. It’s my brain against my opponent’s. It keeps your reflexes sharp, your brain sharp, and you can still play up to a late age unlike other sports.”

Tom Bradshaw celebrates his first goal under Gary Rowett

By John Kelly at Pride Park johnk@southwarknews.co.uk TOM BRADSHAW’S superb finish and an impenetrable defensive barrier helped Millwall to a third win in four away games and to within two points of the play-offs.

Bradshaw produced an incisive thrust through the Derby defence to bamboozle Craig Forsyth not once but twice to score his first goal in nine games, and his first under Gary Rowett.

After that it was try to break us down if you can.

You get the impression that if the apocalypse was finally to arrive and people headed for the hills or down into bunkers, Millwall’s defenders would still be in a penalty area somewhere fighting off flesh-hungry zombies or beating back tsunamis.

And even if the defence is beaten then there’s the Bart Bialkowski forcefield to get through. The Rams had one effort on target last Saturday and it wasn’t even really theirs as Jayden Bogle’s shot came off Jayson Molumby’s boot before the ball skidded towards the near post. But Bialkowski changed direction and threw out a left hand to divert the ball around the post.

The Millwall squad were having their Christmas party on Saturday night and usually fancy-dress as superheroes.

That would have been apt but at the weekend their characters were based on the Netflix series Money Heist, a

Spanish crime caper.

This was far from a robbery at Pride Park. Instead Millwall were a vault that couldn’t be broken into and the Lions have taken ten points form their last four away games. That is the best run of away form since April 2018 when the Lions briefly gatecrashed the top six with two games left.

In the nine games under Rowett, Millwall are fifth in the Championship form table, behind West Brom and Leeds – such heavy favourites to go up – and Blackburn and Brentford.

Oddly enough, after not winning away since the previous March before this prolific mini-spell, it’s now the home form that Millwall need to improve if they are to strengthen the impression that they could genuinely challenge for the play-offs.

After successive 2-2 Den draws,

Millwall play bottom side Barnsley this Saturday and then Brentford in their last game of 2019, both at home, either side of an intriguing clash against Neil Harris’ Cardiff on Boxing Day. Rowett’s side could actually go sixth this weekend, though five other results would also need to go their way and that’s unlikely. But a win – and wouldn’t it be nice to see a comfortable one for a change – would extend the unbeaten run to eight games and show the side can follow up unexpected and impressive victories against the big boys with performances against sides they’re expected to beat. That’s been an issue the last few seasons when flat displays would follow huge FA Cup days, particularly.

The other challenge comes down to set-up and tactics. When they were 1-0 up last Saturday, and this was especially

the case in the second half, they could sit in and defend with five at the back and a line of four protecting them and they were comfortable soaking up the pressure.

But a similar pattern at home, and we’ve all seen it, creates a sense of frustration and panic in the crowd that often transmits to the players.

They will be expected to have more control of the ball and boost their goal difference against a side that has the second-worst defence in the division having conceded 45 goals in 22 games. Bradshaw and Jed Wallace – joint-top scorers for the Lions now in all competitions with eight – should be salivating at the prospect of facing them.

Those two were at the forefront of a positive start at Pride Park. Wallace had an early shot that was straight at Ben Hamer. Shaun Hutchinson then hooked a ball forward and Bradshaw nodded it past Forsyth before getting a shot off as the defender tried to regain his balance.

Mahlon Romeo raided down the right and was inches away from connecting with a Wallace cross.

Hutchinson almost diverted a Wallace shot in as the Rams didn’t have an effort on target in the first half and the home players were booed off at the break.

It was a different story in the second half as Phillip Cocu’s side played with much more energy and finally looked an attacking threat.

Right-back Bogle was one of their best weapons and Bialkowski had to tip away his dangerous cross at full stretch. Martyn Waghorn volleyed wide from centre-back Curtis Davies’ cross before Bialkowski saved the best for the 80th minute when he prevented a Molumby own goal.

It was another impressive away job.

Now Millwall need to show a killer instinct against Barnsley.

‘Brutal honesty’ helps Jayson EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JAYSON MOLUMBY is happy to be staying with Millwall this campaign – but isn’t discussing his future beyond next summer.

Molumby, 20, joined the Lions on a season-long loan from Brighton in August and could have been recalled if he wasn’t getting regular game-time in the Championship.

But he is currently a fixture in the side, only missing one of Gary Rowett’s nine games in charge when he was injured for the 1-0 win at Swansea.

The Ireland under-21 captain has made sixteen appearances in his first full season in senior football.

Molumby broke into the Brighton first team in 2017-18 when he played two games in the EFL Cup. But a serious knee injury that season put him out of the game for over a campaign and he didn’t play senior football from September 2017 until he made his Lions debut in the 2-1 win at West Brom in the EFL Cup last August.

Molumby is pleased with his progress and will spend at least a season with the Lions.

“It was based on playing a certain amount of games. The only reason I could have been called back is if I wasn’t playing,” Molumby said.

“I’ve been playing and I’ve been really happy. Even if Brighton said they wanted me back I’d rather stay here anyway.

I’m playing a lot and it’s a really good

standard.

“I’ll see what happens next summer.

I’m enjoying playing first-team football. I love Brighton, of course, there are some great people there and they helped me when I was going through difficult times.

“They looked after me really well to get me back on the pitch so I can’t thank them enough for that. I’ve got some of my best mates there as well.”

Molumby has won a lot of fans in South Bermondsey with his combative nature and his ability on the ball.

He said Neil Harris, who signed him, told him what supporters would expect of him.

“I just want to play well and if the fans take to me it’s a bonus,” Molumby continued. “I want to do the best for the team, myself and the people I’m representing as well.

“I knew that speaking to the previous gaffer. He said to me, ‘as long as you give 100 per cent every week even if you’re having a bad game but keep trying to get on the ball and do the right things, the fans will respect you’.

“When he told me that I felt comfortable straightaway and that’s pretty much my game anyway, giving it everything.

“I was disappointed when he left as was everyone. A lot of the boys were a lot closer to him than I was and knew him a lot longer. But he was always very good with me and he would always give me a reason why I wasn’t playing.

“I came in quite late, I didn’t go away pre-season with the squad and had a little injury. It was always going to take a little bit of time to challenge for a place in the team and he gave me my chance

Besides Harris and now Rowett, Molumby has had plenty of guidance from some of the more experienced players in the Lions squad.

Shaun Williams said recently he spoke to him after the 2-2 draw with Wigan, hinting the performance of his young team-mate wasn’t up to standard.

Williams isn’t the only one who tells it like it is.

“They’re brutally honest,” Molumby said. “Jed Wallace said: ‘I’ll be the first one to praise you but I’ll be the first one to tell you when you’re not on it.’

“That’s the leadership we have in the group, with him, Willo, Pearcey [Alex Pearce], Hutchy [Shaun Hutchinson], there are a lot of good characters.

They’re just trying to help me at the end of the day.

“I’m very happy and when you’re winning everyone’s happy. It helps when the boys are playing so well and picking up points. The mood around the place is

really good.

“There are perks but it can be tough mentally as well. You need to turn up and produce every day. People don’t always see the other more difficult side of football.

“It’s good pressure, though, it’s what you want. That’s what you’re there for, that feeling you get playing senior football.

The difference between under-23 level and this is the buzz you get at this level playing in front of that many fans. It gives you a rush of adrenaline.”

Rowett has made Millwall less direct and given midfielders more responsibility on the ball.

That’s a style that suits Molumby.

“The ball is coming in a lot now through the midfielders,” Molumby added. “He wants the midfielders to get on the ball and control and dictate a bit more.

As a midfielder you want to get a lot of the ball, that’s why you enjoy being a midfielder.

“I have been getting plenty of the ball and been decent so I’m enjoying it. You build your confidence up if you get a few passes. You can build your way into the game more compared with when you haven’t seen the ball for ten or fifteen minutes because it’s going over you.”

Millwall are just two points off the playoffs and have a good chance of keeping their run going when they host Barnsley this Saturday.

Molumby isn’t getting carried away but has his eyes on continuing their climb up the table.

“We take it game by game because we know how quickly things can change in this league. But we’re looking up, definitely.”

Riding a wave Rowett advice helps striker to get back on the goal trail EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk TOM BRADSHAW has revealed Gary Rowett has had to “put the reins” on him to ensure his energy is best spent on getting into positions to score goals.

Rowett wants Bradshaw in or near the box to take advantage of attacking opportunities. Last Saturday at Derby, Bradshaw got possession in a central area 25 yards out before flicking the ball past Craig Forsyth and lashing a shot into the top corner. It was a clinical piece of striker play.

It was his first goal under Rowett, who has seen his side lose just once in his nine games in charge.

Rowett has made a number of tweaks to the way Millwall play, and Bradshaw gave another insight into one of them.

“The gaffer likes to put the reins on me a little bit because I can be like a dog chasing the ball. If there’s something to close down or chase I’ll do it,” Bradshaw said.

“But sometimes it can be detrimental so you’ve got to stay solid in the team shape and only press when you know the whole team can go with you so there’s no space for them to play around you or in behind you.

“It’s just a case of knowing when to press, and all the lads are well drilled in doing that or knowing when to stay in our shape.

“The gaffer said to me when he came in, ‘it’s great that you want to [run the channels] but it’s a little bit of wasted energy, we’ve got bodies out there.

You’re most effective in and around the box.’

“Derby moved the ball quite well and with the way they played with two holding midfielders split quite wide it was difficult to put pressure on the ball.

“When we play three up top I can leave the wide areas for the other guys and try to get on the end of crosses and be in positions to score goals. He wants me to keep my energy for attacking play.

Obviously I’ve got to do my defensive role but ultimately a striker is in the team to score goals.

“You want to be in the box as much as possible to score as many goals as you can. It’s good advice, in my opinion.

“I’ve tried to apply that to my game.

Saturday it paid off.”

Bradshaw explained what he was thinking when he picked up the ball from Shaun Hutchinson’s pass.

“I saw [Forsyth] out of the corner of my eye and knew his momentum was taking him towards me, so I thought if I

could knock it over him in the opposite direction it would give me time to get a shot off,” Bradshaw said. “I had just enough time to get a shot away. I only had a split-second to shoot and luckily it had enough power to beat the goalkeeper.

“I actually started running in the wrong direction [from Millwal fans] first but quickly realised. It was one of the hardest runs of the game! Getting across the pitch to the away fans, they were going mad. It was great.

“We’re on a bit of a wave at the moment where we’re getting results.

We’re winning away from home. I really enjoyed the moment and the fact that we could see the game out.

“There’s an added pressure on strikers to chip in with goals as well.

I’ve kept trying to work hard and do what I can for the team. Some months everything falls to you and other months you’ve got to work a little bit harder for your goals.

“In games like that when we’re not necessarily at our best, to grind out an away win is a great sign.

“We’ve worked hard on the formation in training, everyone knows where they need to be when we have got the ball and when we haven’t got the ball.

“I’m never really isolated when I’m up there. There’s Jed [Wallace] and Jon [Dadi Bodvarsson in the 5-2-3 formation] so there’s always a pass on or support when the ball comes up. It’s been really effective and long may it continue.”

Jayson Molumby and Shaun Williams will continue their excellent partnership with eighteen-year-old Billy Mitchell set to be on the bench.

Apart from personnel, manager Gary Rowett has to decide whether to stick with the 5-2-3 formation that has worked so well away from home or return to a four-man defence. If Rowett chooses the

latter then Alex Pearce is likely to drop to the bench.

Jiri Skalak, Shane Ferguson, Connor Mahoney or Aiden O’Brien could come into the team on the left side of midfield, if Rowett plays two up front. Rowett promised last week that O’Brien would see more game-time after his injury-time equaliser in their last game at The Den, the 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest.

Barnsley have been in the relegation zone since mid-September, but they have posed a significant goal threat. Despite their struggles, they have hit the back of the net in thirteen of their last fourteen Championship games, scoring 25 goals.

Struber, who took over from the sacked Daniel Stendel on November 20, Barnsley hadn’t won in fifteen league games. The Yorkshire side have won two of their six games since, including their 5-3 defeat of QPR last weekend.

Their three Championship victories this season have been at Oakwell and they arrive at The Den without a win on their league travels in eleven games since they beat Plymouth 3-0 in League One last April.

The Lions haven’t lost at home since the 2-1 defeat to QPR on September 21. But there is note of caution in that Barnsley have won the last two times they have visited The Den, scoring three times in each game, with Tom Bradshaw bagging a double at his future home in September 2017. That was their first away win that season.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL WILL be targeting a fourth win in five away games when they travel to Neil Harris’ Cardiff on Boxing Day – with Shaun Hutchinson saying there has been a “night and day” turnaround in their away fortunes.

The Lions hadn’t won on their Championship travels this season before Harris quit in October, but their 1-0 defeat of Derby means they have three victories in five away games since Gary Rowett took over.

If the Lions get a positive result against Barnsley this weekend they will take an eight-game unbeaten run to the Cardiff City Stadium to face former boss Harris.

“It’s night and day compared with how it was earlier in the season going away from home and not getting wins,” Hutchinson told the News this week.

“Now there’s real confidence in the group that we can go anywhere and put in a performance and get the points.

“It’s really, really good times. When things aren’t going well away from home you’re concentrating on the home games and there’s more pressure.

“If we can keep the form up away from home we’re going to do great. They (Swansea, Birmingham, Bristol City, Derby) looked a tough set of fixtures but you just never know in this league.

Sometimes we’ve picked up fewer points against the bottom three than the top three.

“We’re going into every game with the same mentality and focus now, to get three points. To come out of the last few games with the points we have is great testament to the lads.

“A lot of credit also goes to the manager for how he has set us up in a 5-2-3. It’s a formation that has been discussed a lot at times, it suits everybody in what they’ve got.

“It gives Mahlon [Romeo] the licence to go and express himself when sometimes he might have been held back. It gives everyone a bit of freedom and allows the attacking players to go and express themselves.

“You saw Coops [Jake Cooper] go on a run up the line last weekend. It gives people the feeling that if we want to do something we can do it because with the players we’ve got in different positions it allows them to cover if need be.

“It’s enjoyable, I know the boys are enjoying it, which I suppose is natural when you’re winning. It gives us another dimension that we can use it when we need to.

“I’m sure it will give the manager a headache when it comes to the home games. You never know until you’ve tried it at home. I’m sure it’s something the gaffer will be thinking a lot about because he knows also how good we are in a 4-4-2, 4-4-1-1 formation.

“The 5-2-3 sets you up defensively and gives you a base to counter-attack. Do you want that at home? It’s up to him to decide. If he does change it then who does he leave out, who comes in? I’m pretty sure he’ll make the right decision and if not it’s something you learn from.

“I wouldn’t necessarily say there are more demands on us in that formation.

Since the manager’s come in he’s put more emphasis on being braver, trying to keep possession rather than handing it over quickly. He wants us to control games better.

“We’re still a work in progress, we’re still not doing it to quite the standards that he wants. We all know that, because it’s a bit of a habit we got ourselves into.

Hutchinson knows based on his time at the club when they have often disappointed at The Den against sides they are expected to beat that they can’t drop their standards against the bottom-placed Tykes on Saturday.

“We say it before the match, we say it in huddles, all through the week,

but generally in my time at Millwall we’ve struggled against the lower sides because maybe they don’t come out and open up as much,” Hutchinson said. “We saw it against Wigan the other week.

“We know exactly what we’re coming up against. It’s just about trying to show the same quality and commitment at home, keep picking up wins and see how far we can go.

“I don’t think there’s one bad person in the dressing room and that’s credit to Neil Harris for putting the squad together. He knew what he wanted and he got what he wanted with a solid group of lads. There’s not one person in the team who’s not a good lad.

“Bart [Bialkwoski] has proven that

he’s a top, top keeper in this league and without a doubt he’s keeping us in more games than he’s losing us games.

“If he stays in the form he’s in now then he’s going to have a very good season.”

Meanwhile, Hutchinson is the leading Lions centre-back scorer this season on three goals. Cooper finally got off the mark for the campaign when he headed home the second from Jed Wallace’s cross when Millwall won 2-1 at Bristol City last week.

Hutchinson praised Wallace for the quality of his deliveries this season and was pleased to see Cooper break his duck.

“We know what a threat he is and he

has shown that throughout his career,” Hutchinson said. “It hadn’t been quite falling for him.

“The day before we played Bristol we did a corner set-piece drill and the ball was falling to him and he was putting them in. You were thinking that was just the confidence he needed to kick on and in the next game he pops up with a great goal.

“We need to keep being a threat from set-plays because we know what a handful we are and how big they are for us. At the moment we’re doing well with that.

“Jed’s been on point this year and it’s something that he’s really improved on. He’s put a lot of good balls in the box from corners, free-kicks and open play.

“We always say if he puts a ball in a good area and we don’t score then it’s our fault. He keeps putting crosses into good areas and that’s why he’s got so many assists, because we’re attacking them.

“Once the ball is a good ball then we’ve got a chance of scoring with the players we’ve got in the box, and that’s what we’ve proven this year.”

Ben Thompson could miss a number of games

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL WILL prioritise the signing of a midfielder in January – with Ben Thompson set to be sidelined with an ankle injury.

Thompson was having a scan this week on the injury he suffered after coming on as a substitute in the 1-0 win at Derby last Saturday.

With Ryan Leonard out until at least January, Lions boss Gary Rowett has just two fit senior midfielders in Shaun Williams and Jayson Molumby.

Thompson, 24, appeared to have done serious damage when he blocked a cross late on at Pride Park and had to be helped off the pitch. He was scheduled to be part of Millwall’s annual visit to Lewisham Hospital on Monday but couldn’t attend.

He could miss a significant number of games.

Rowett is set to bring Billy Mitchell into his squad this Saturday against Barnsley.

Mitchell knows he could be needed over the Christmas period.

“You never know what’s going to happen, hopefully Thommo recovers quickly,” Mitchell said. “But if needed I will be ready.

“I’ll work hard in training and try to

give the gaffer as much confidence as possible to play me.

“Training has been really intense, sharp, a slightly different methodology the way he does things. You can see from our performances the team is definitely improving.

“I think we’re playing a little bit more football than we did. I think that’s benefitting the midfielders, definitely, we’ve got some really good technical players. That’s a side of their game we perhaps hadn’t seen before and getting them on the ball has helped us create more chances.

“It’s yielded some really good results.”

Mitchell noticed the difference from under-23 football at Oxford and he has been involved in first-team training.

“It’s certainly quicker, certainly more physical, and I think you find that your mistakes get punished a lot more so you have to be slightly more aware,” Mitchell added.

“But I felt comfortable in that game and I felt ready for it, so I feel I’d be able to do

a job if I was called upon.

“Having had a lot of exposure to firstteam training you naturally adapt. After a few training sessions you find yourself doing things maybe you weren’t the first time you went there.”

Bradshaw, 27, face the Tykes for the first time since leaving them to join Millwall in a club-record deal in the summer of 2018.

It’s common to see players make a point of not celebrating when they find the net against their former clubs.

Bradshaw got his eighth of the season last weekend when he scored the winner against Derby County.

And he is keen to add to that this weekend as he approaches double figures.

“Yes, I would [celebrate]” he told News. “I had a great time at Barnsley but I’m a big believer in if you score for the team you’re playing for then you should celebrate like you would any other week.

“I want to score as many goals as possible. To get eight by this point I probably would have taken it at the start of the season. I want to kick on in the second half and get well into double figures.”

Millwall are seven Championship games unbeaten and will be confident of making that eight against the bottom side.

Bradshaw will be desperate to be involved against the club he scored eighteen league goals for in 58 league starts, but he knows that Gary Rowett has rotated his strikers.

Matt Smith, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Aiden O’Brien will be pressing for inclusion at The Den. “We’ve got a strong squad this year and everyone’s playing well,” Bradshaw said.

“There are going to be games when the gaffer is going to pick a team that he feels is best for that day. I don’t think you can take it personally when you’re on the bench.

“But when you’re in the team you have to do the job to the best of your ability.”
