East Street is hosting a niche Christmas event for families: the Black Santa’s Grotto Experience.

Step into Noir Kringle’s magical Christmas Grotto, set up in Santa’s workshop surrounded by sparkle, presents, stockings, letters piled high posted from boys and girls ready to be read by the man in red.

All ages are welcome. You will be greeted by Mr Kringle's helpers and Mrs Kringle, who will guide you through our enchanting Black Santa's Grotto.

The workshop tour includes making Mrs Kringle's very own secret magic reindeer

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

Trial into murder of Rocky Djelal to open

Nursery’s destiny is uncertain Peckham families devastated as community nursery faces eviction with rent raised nearly threefold

By Kit Heren news@southwarknews.co.uk A community nursery is facing eviction at the end of the year after its rent was raised nearly threefold.

The manager of Destiny Kids nursery in Peckham was told in June by its landlord the Copleston Centre that the monthly rent for its premises would increase from £850 to £2500 in 2020.

The nursery cut costs to meet the rent increase - but in October the Copleston Centre told the manager, who asked not to be named, that a new tenant had been found and the nursery would have to move out.

Destiny Kids was founded in 2011 and has an Ofsted 'Good' rating. Parents are upset over losing what they describe as one of the best and most affordable childcare options in the area.

Parent Markella Panayi said: "Destiny Kids nursery is unique in the fact that is a small affordable nursery with great opening hours from 7am - 7pm. We leave

our daughter in the safe hands of the staff who obviously care about each child and their development."

Others voiced their fear that the loss of Destiny Kids was another sign of rapid social change in the area.

Charlotte Davis said: "As a local mum who grew up in this south London community, the loss of Destiny Kids Nursery is huge. Knowing we will be evicted on the 31st December is so upsetting.

"Our nursery is one of the few nurseries that caters for the families on lower income. Destiny Kids allows us the opportunity to work and bring up children in central London.

"I feel, along with the dismantling of all our hair salons, barbers, and African food stores, the closure of our nursery is another attempt to remove the old Peckham, the heart and soul of Peckham and replace it with something new.

“Finding a new venue is key to keeping this nursery and Peckham alive for future generations."

Parents are upset at what they see as a lack of communication from the Copleston Centre.

Harriet Bailiss said: "As a parent who's really happy with the nursery, we're totally in the dark as to why this is happening. We haven't been consulted at all to find out if we're happy with the nursery."

A spokesperson for the Copleston Centre said: "The Copleston Centre provides a wide range of activities that supports every part of our community.

We operate within our means and to ensure both our day-to-day and our long-term survival, the trustees regularly review our commercial arrangements.

"Naturally, it would be wrong to discuss the details of those agreements externally.

"We can, however, confirm that as part of a regular review we undertook a comprehensive and transparent tender process with a number of nursery service providers, including the current incumbent.

"With the help of independent experts, this process began in June this year, and the results were communicated to all parties in October 2019.

"Every consideration made and all decisions taken have been with the longterm interests of the centre as a muchvalued local resource in mind."

But sick Shah, of Romford, used the ‘Jade Goody effect’ as one of his excuses to sexually assault and molest patients in unnecessary medical exams, an Old Bailey trial heard.

The doctor was found guilty on Tuesday of nine counts of sexual assault and sixteen of sexual assault by penetration relating to eight victims.

An earlier trial found Shah guilty of offences of sexual assault by penetration and sexual assault by touching in relation to seventeen other women.

He committed his offences while a GP at the Mawney Medical School in Romford between 2009 and 2013.

“Shah was a long-serving doctor who was well-known in the community, and trusted and liked by his patients, many who had him as their GP for many years,” said Acting Detective Superintendent Richard McDonagh.

“They were unaware that Shah was carrying out unnecessary, invasive examinations on female patients for his own sexual gratification, after giving his victims misleading clinical advice.

“These offences are particularly grave due to Shah’s abuse of his position, and of the trust placed in him as a family doctor.”

Jurors heard how he used the stories of Jade Goody and Angelina Jolie to recommend

An Old Bailey trial into the murder of Bermondsey man Rocky Djelal was due to open as the News went to press.

Mr Djelal was stabbed in broad daylight in Southwark Park on Halloween last year near to a children’s play area.

Accused Stephen O’Rourke, of Grosvenor Park, Kennington, is charged with murdering Mr Djelal.

His brother, Jason O’Rourke, of Catford Hill, had been charged with assisting in the murder.

The 34-year-old died in prison in April this year while in custody.

“HMP Belmarsh prisoner Jason O’Rourke died in prison on 2 April 2019 and our thoughts are with his family and friends,” a Prison Service spokesperson told the News in May. “As with all deaths in custody, there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman also confirmed to the paper that it had opened an investigation into the death of Mr O’Rourke, as is standard procedure.

‘Coyle expected to win’

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A poll conducted on the eve of the General Election suggested Labour’s Neil Coyle will retain Bermondsey and Old Southwark, despite Liberal Democrat hopes of taking the seat.

YouGov’s final MRP poll ahead of Thursday’s election estimates that Labour will take 53 per cent of the vote, compared to the Liberal Democrats’ 33 per cent, giving Coyle a comfortable majority.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark is seen as the Southwark seat to watch in this election. Overall the model, published Tuesday night, suggested the Conservatives are on-course for a small majority.

However, the pollsters add: “Like all predictions our model comes with some uncertainty, and the margin of error here could put the final number of Conservative seats from 311 to 367.

“This means that we absolutely cannot rule out the 2019 election producing a hung Parliament - nor can we rule out a larger Conservative majority.”

YouGov also warned that their model is national, meaning it cannot always take into account factors which shape the vote in specific constituencies on Thursday.

Camberwell and Peckham, currently held by Harriet Harman, was predicted ahead of polls opening to remain safe Labour, as was Dulwich and West Norwood.

This was despite an electoral pact agreed for the Green Party to challenge Labour’s Helen Hayes.

Pervert doctor used Jade Goody’s name to lure his victims in

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A pervert doctor used Jade Goody’s cancer as one of the excuses to sexually assault patients in unnecessary medical exams over five years.

Dr Manish Shah, 50, is facing jail after citing celebs’ cancer battles to instil fear in patients and molesting 23 of them.

Jade, who grew up on Bermondsey’s Dickens Estate, bravely used her fight with cancer to encourage women to have regular cancer screens. She sadly died of the illness in 2009.

unnecessary breast and vaginal exams for his own sexual pleasure.

The Old Bailey also heard how Shah made inappropriate comments with some of his female patients, hugging and kissing them.

The doctor’s offending only came to light in July 2013, when four brave women made separate allegations to the Mawney Medical School that Shah had sexually assaulted them.

Medical authorities conducted a review of all his female patients, and became increasingly concerned about the medical validity of the exams he had conducted.

Police spoke to 139 of his former patients, a number of whom supported the prosecution

by providing evidence.

“I would like to acknowledge the women who were victims of Shah, and who supported the prosecution and gave evidence at Shah’s trials,” added Acting DSI Richard McDonagh.

“Without their evidence, Shah may not have been brought to justice, but the weight of evidence against him at both trials was overwhelming.”

Shah was found not guilty of one count of sexual assault, and three counts of assault by penetration. The jury could not reach a decision on a further sexual assault charge.

He is expected to be sentenced at the Old Bailey on February 7.

ex-publican’s protest over ‘two bridges to nowhere’

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk An ex-publican of a popular Bermondsey boozer has started a daily protest outside his own former pub in a bitter employment row, only months after taking up the contract.

Elliot Swift, a former manager of the Two Bridges on Tooley Street, alleges that he was fired without good reason, and is being made homeless on December 17 with his wife and fourmonth-old baby daughter.

He is now picketing daily outside the popular pub, close to City Hall, with a sign stating: “This pub is making me homeless over Christmas.” He has no plans to stop the protest.

However, Star Pubs and Bars – run

by Heineken beers, which ultimately owns the pub – said Mr Swift’s contract was terminated for “non-compliance with its terms and conditions.”

It refused to tell the News what those terms and conditions were, saying the current licensee did not wish to discuss the “intricacies of the company’s break-up in public.”

Mr Swift, originally from New York, had been brought in to take over the management of the pub with a

business partner in August.

It was part of a well-publicised £400,000 refurb of the former Bridge Lounge to reopen it as The Two Bridges in September.

“I just want some justice,” said Mr Swift, who lives in the flat above the pub with his wife and his four-month old baby daughter.

He began his protest on Friday, and has publicised it on an Instagram account called ‘Two Bridges to Nowhere.’

“We will be here every day, we’re trying to do three hours a day, to make sure people know the pub is treating me unfairly,” he said.

“The reception has been very good, people have been giving me lots of advice, people have been walking away from the pub.”

Elliot, who is now doing trial shifts at nearby Shipwrights Arms, said the family may not leave the flat above the pub as requested on December 17.

Star Pubs and Bars have given him 28 days to vacate the premises.

Among the reasons for the row is an accusation by Mr Swift that he cannot currently afford to move out, making him and his young family homeless over Christmas.

“We have a good working

relationship with one of the directors who is now running the pub under a new contract,” Star Pubs and Bars told the News.

Asked whether the radical step of protesting outside the workplace which he used to manage was unreasonable, Mr Swift said: “A fourmonth-old baby, a hard-working businessman and his wife are being chucked out onto the street and being treated like garbage. What I’m doing doesn’t even hold a candle compared to what’s been done to me.”

“The Two Bridges was operated on a management contract by a limited company, which had two directors,” responded a Star Pubs and Bars spokesperson to detailed questions by the News.

Those two directors of that company were Mr Swift and a former business partner.

“The contract had to be terminated due to non-compliance with its terms and conditions. Repeated warnings were given about this,” the statement said.

“The other director is no longer involved in the pub’s operation and, as a result, was given 28 working days’ notice to vacate the pub’s accommodation."

“If you saw anything out of the ordinary, no matter how insignificant you think it is, then please contact my team as a matter of urgency, as your information could prove vital to our enquiries and could help bring those responsible for this heinous violent act to justice.”

At this early stage in the investigation, no arrests have been made.

Murder investigation launched after 20-year-old is stabbed to death kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Detectives have launched a murder investigation and are appealing for witnesses and information following a fatal stabbing on a street just off Creekside in Deptford.

Police were called in the early hours to Bronze Street, SE8, last Friday, December 6 at around 3am following reports of a stabbing.

Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and found a 20-yearold man suffering stab injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:32am and his next-of-kin have been informed.

£100,000 for refugee bike project

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Herne Hill charity which gives free bikes to London’s refugees and asylum seekers has been given a £100,000 boost to cope with demand.

The money, which comes from the City of London Corporation’s charitable arm, will help pay for new staff to fix up second hand bikes before giving them to refugees.

The project, which started in 2013, has so far donated nearly 6,000 bikes, but has needed to take on more staff after donating 1,500 bikes in this year alone.

“This is a pivotal time of growth for The Bike Project as we experience greater demand for our services than ever before,” said Nicola Hill, National Operations Manager at the charity, based on Crossthwaite Avenue.

“This funding enables us to scale up our bike donations and volunteering opportunities so that we can reach more refugees than ever before, whilst growing our social enterprise to ensure our long-term sustainability.”

By giving refugees and asylum seekers bikes, the charity hopes to make it easier for them to integrate into their new lives in the UK. “This charity is giving refugees

and asylum seekers the resources needed to access key services as they stat their new lives in the UK,” added Dhruv Patel of the City of London Corporation.

“Without access to transport, these people would struggle to fully integrate into society and become part of the community.

“This is a very innovative and unique charity that has proven successful from the outset. It’s found a niche area for support and is really transforming lives.”

The Corporation has previously donated £40,000 to the project to expand their online bike social enterprise.

Walworth man charged with murder

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A man from Walworth's Brandon Street is one of three men charged with the murder in Whitechapel.

Twenty-year-old Nanu Miah (b. 24.04.1999) was arrested on Thursday, November 28, and charged the following day by detectives investigating a death in Whitechapel.

Iron Miah, aged 40, was found collapsed with a head injury in Nelson Street, E1, on Tuesday, November 19.

He died in hospital two days later.

A post-mortem found he had been killed by a gunshot wound.

Also charged with murder were 31-year-old Hassan Mohammed (16.08.1988) from Cumberland Road in Portsmouth and Mohamed Moshaer Ali, 27, (07.04.1992) from Western Avenue in Dagenham.

Police have also arrested a 30-yearold woman on suspicion of assisting an offender. She has been bailed until late December. And a 40-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of murder on Monday 25 and bailed until the end of this month.

24 ‘modern slavery victims rescued’ after police raid five nail bars

Groundbreaking five-month operation between Met and Southwark Council leads to arrests

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Twenty-four people believed to have been trafficked and forced to work as modern slaves were ‘rescued’ from five nail bars in Southwark last week.

More than a dozen suspected gang masters were arrested in dawn raids after a five-month police investigation, police confirmed last Thursday, December 5.

Officers say the nail bars are in Peckham High Street, Walworth Road, Camberwell Road and Rye Lane, but have not yet given further details due to the sensitive nature of the investigation.

Nineteen adults and five children were found inside the nail bars. They are now being supported by specially trained officers and are receiving medical care.

It is alleged the people were trafficked from Vietnam.

Thirteen men and women were arrested on suspicion of human trafficking and modern slaving offences, with a fourteenth person arrested on suspicion of immigration offences. All are in custody in south London police stations.

The five-month investigation, a groundbreaking operation between the Met and Southwark Council, began in July 2019 after the council’s licensing and trading standards teams raised concerns.

A Southwark Council spokesperson told the News how the investigation unfolded:

“During visits to several unlicensed nail bars the council uncovered indicators for serious criminality, modern slavery and possible trafficking of vulnerable women and children “Since then the council has worked jointly with the police and the Gang Masters and Labour Abuse Authority, as well as other agencies to gather further evidence both in terms of the conditions in the premises, but more acutely the appalling work practices and apparent levels of exploitation.

“This culminated in the police-led raids last week.

“Our primary concern throughout, but particularly last week, was the safety of women, children and vulnerable adults caught up in this trade and we therefore worked to ensure proper support was in place for them – social care and support staff, specialist Vietnamese charities and the Salvation Army were all on hand to offer help and support.”

More than 150 police officers, immigration officials and charity, council and social workers were involved; both in collecting evidence and providing support to the victims.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Rogers, from the Met’s Central Specialist Crime, said: “I am pleased with the results of this multi-agency operation which was launched to safeguard vulnerable individuals, identify perpetrators of crime and ultimately protect the public.

“Human trafficking, modern slavery and sexual exploitation often occur in

plain sight, and it is often the case those carrying out these offences exploit those from less fortunate backgrounds who have travelled to our county for a better life.

“They prey on the knowledge these individuals will carry out hard, labourintensive work to provide for themselves.

“The Met is entirely committed to tackling these crimes and protect the most vulnerable of people in our communities.

“We will continue to work closely with our partners as we have on this particular operation, to target those involved in this criminality and prevent them from exploiting innocent individuals any further.

“I hope this operation continues to raise the public’s awareness of these shocking crime types, and sends a clear message to those involved that we will work with all agencies and law enforcement to identify and bring them to justice.”

The council is urging consumers to be aware of the signs of exploitation in nail bars – especially those with cheap prices.

Customers should always check that the price point doesn’t fall below the minimum wage, make sure there aren’t young people working who look school age, and if there are signs of fear, injury or poor personal hygiene, report their concerns. Heating outage prevented

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A heating and hot water outage affecting some flats on the Brandon Estate in Camberwell was resolved within days, says Southwark Council.

The outage, which occurred while planned maintenance work was taking place in preparation for the colder months, started on Thursday and was fixed by the end of Friday last week.

As the News has reported, hundreds of residents were left without heating

and hot water last winter over Christmas and New Year after the creaking district heating system broke down.

Outages across the borough – including in the Aylesbury and estates in Peckham and Nunhead, led to residents stuck using costly fan heaters and being forced to wash in public leisure centres operated on behalf of the council.

It is believed extra maintenance will prevent similar mass outages this year, with no faults reported in the Brandon’s nine plant rooms at present.

Funding is given to help combat modern slavery

Human Trafficking Foundation, which works with councils across London to help them identify and support victims, has been awarded £123,000 from City Bridge Trust, the City of London Corporation's charitable fund.

London has the highest number of identified human trafficking cases in the UK. The charity has helped run awareness and training events for councils and has set up single points of contact across local authorities, the NHS and police to act as a network who can develop policy and support their colleagues.

The Human Trafficking Foundation's head of office, Tamara Barnett, said continued funding was vital to stop victims from falling through the gaps in support and ending up back with their captors.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Rough sleepers who bedded down in Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park this winter have finally been given shelter in time for Christmas.

Last week, The Met confirmed all the homeless people who had been living in tents outside the Imperial War Museum had been moved into appropriate accommodation.

The News understands the makeshift homes had been in place for several months.

As we reported in November, residents were growing increasingly frustrated at the situation, concerned for the welfare of those living in the encampment, and worried about reported anti-social behaviour, including drinking and drug taking, near kids’ play areas.

Police officers and Southwark Council had been working closely with homeless charities, including St Mungo’s to help the rough sleepers. All have now been moved into permanent accommodation either in shelters or supported living homes depending on their individual needs.

"Sadly there were multiple tragedies such as the case of 'Drina', where her council couldn't find a suitable translator, then interviewed the survivor with her traffickers, and then housed the young woman in a dementia care home because they had no other emergency accommodation.

“One of our aims over the next two years is to ensure all London social workers recognise that the victims of slavery should be recognised for priority need, something that is not currently the case and so leads to some survivors falling back into exploitation."

The charity's chairman, Anthony Steen CBE, said: "Three years ago almost no local authority in London had anything in place to tackle slavery.

"While councils had a statutory duty to identify victims, barely 100 victims were found by local authorities across London when we started the project.

"This is even though the data showed that the vast majority of human trafficking victims - thousands - were in London. The work we are doing now is making a real difference."

Councillor Kieron Williams, cabinet member for housing management and modernisation, told the News: “It’s not right that anyone should have to sleep rough, particularly when they have an increased risk to their health in cold weather, our officers have visited all those who were in this situation, to provide them with the help they need and they have all been given support to get a home. We will closely monitor this issue and we have already received a positive response from the community living nearby.”

Local Lib Dem councillors Maria LinforthHall and Graham Neale (pictured), who had lobbied for urgent intervention to stop tensions from escalating, said the site had now also been secured to prevent more encampments from springing up.

In a joint statement they thanked the police and council team for their work, described the outcome as a ‘great win for everyone in Saint George’s ward’. “We’re really pleased that the park is a safe place for us all, but also that we can be sure that this Christmas the people who were sleeping rough will have somewhere safe to sleep.”

16-year-old has been charged with clinton’s murder

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A sixteen-year-old boy has been charged with murder by police investigating the fatal stabbing of Clinton Evbota on Camberwell’s Brandon Estate.

The boy, who is from Camberwell and cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested on Tuesday, December 3.

He appeared at Bromley Magistrates’ Court two days later, on Thursday, December 5.

The teenager is the eighth person to be arrested by detectives investigating Clinton’s murder.

Six other males have all been bailed pending further enquiries and one, a fourteen-year-old, was released with no further action.

Eighteen-year-old Clinton died at the scene of the stabbing on the estate’s Grimsel Path on Thursday, October 10.

Despite the efforts of the emergency services, the teen was pronounced dead at around 9.15pm.

He had suffered “multiple stab wounds.”

trailblazing Guy’s doctor

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A Guy’s and St Thomas’ doctor has been named as one of the most exciting researchers working today.

Dr Sophie Papa was named as one of the 50 Movers and Shakers in BioBusiness 2019, a report highlighting women trailblazers and trendsetters in the UK’s bioscience industry.

Her research into cell therapy for cancer patients involves the first human trial of a cell therapy called CAR-T therapy to help head and neck cancer patients.

Although cell therapy has been used successfully in cancers that affect the blood, like lymphoma, they are yet to be proven in treating cancers with a solid tumour.

Cell therapy uses live immune cells, usually the patient’s own, to help tackle disease.

Dr Papa is King’s College London’s clinical reader and a consultant in Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust where she is the lead for skin cancer research.

She said: “As clinicians we focus our work on making a genuine difference

for our patients. “We aim to reduce the impact of symptoms and improve the quality and length of life for our patients.

“As researchers we address the underlying biology of these cancers.

Clinical researchers are key to bringing these goals together.

“I am delighted to have been recognised for the valuable work that we do here at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s College London.

“Cell therapies are changing outcomes for some patients with blood cancers.

“Taking these therapies into more

prevalent solid tumours requires coordinated effort across medical specialties.

“We are at the cutting edge of early phase cell therapy trials, exemplified by our trial in head and neck cancer.

Terror cops have seized more than 1,000 exhibits and retrieved more than eighty hours of CCTV in their bid to piece together terror killer Usman Khan’s movement’s prior to last month’s attack at Fishmonger’s Hall.

But police need anyone who has not already uploaded footage of the attack to upload them on the website www.ukpoliceimageappeal.co.uk, as well as make contact with detectives.

“The Counter Terrorism Command has been relentlessly working to establish the full circumstances of the attack and to ensure there is no related outstanding threat to the public,” said the Met’s Assistant Commissioner, Neil Basu.

“We have found no evidence to suggest anybody else was involved in this attack, but we continue to make extensive enquiries to ensure this is the case.”

Inquests opened last Wednesday into the deaths of the two victims, Jack

Miss Jones was pronounced dead of a stab wound to the chest inside the hall at 2.25pm.

“Our thoughts continue to be with the families of Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones; the injured victims and everyone affected by this shocking and senseless attack,” added AC Basu.

“The effects of terrorist attacks are far reaching and so I wholeheartedly urge anyone distressed by this incident, even if they were not directly involved in it, to seek support.”

All of the three other people injured in the attack have now returned home from hospital.

Police advise the public to continue with plans as usual, and “be vigilant but be alert, not alarmed.”

shard festive light DISPLAY IS CHILD’S PLAY!

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Bermondsey schoolchildren are the brains behind this year’s Christmas light display on the top of the Shard, which is illuminating the building throughout December.

The designs, from schoolkids who study in the Bridges Federation, include a Christmas tree, a wrapped present and Father Christmas’s hat. The lightshow launched on Monday at 6.30pm.

In order to put the designs into practice, technicians had to install 552 LED lights from 800ft to 1,016ft, with 8,000 metres of cable – roughly the length of 956 London double-decker buses.

“Every year we produce a tremendous display that lights up the London skyline but, as we enter a new decade, we felt that it was time to do something a little different,” said Michael Baker, CEO of The Shard’s management company.

“We are committed to engaging with the local community – something that we have taken great pride in since opening our doors in 2013.

“The fact that London and global audiences will see the children’s

magnificent work is hugely gratifying, and ensures that Shard Lights is an exciting event for The Shard’s occupiers and visitors as well as the wider community.”

The pupils’ hard-work in coming up with the designs has been praised by executive headteacher of the federation, Katherine Wooder. The federation runs Snowsfields, Tower Bridge and Robert Browning primary schools.

“The opportunity for our children to take part in such an iconic event was one that we simply couldn’t pass up,” said Ms Wooder.

“We are always looking for unique ways for our pupils to express themselves creatively, and this provides them with one of the biggest stages to do so.

“They have worked tirelessly to create a show that the whole of London can enjoy.”

The lights will run until 30th December with a special finale on the evening of 31st December to celebrate the New Year.

The spire will turn white on New Year’s Eve as Big Ben counts down to 2020, before emulating the firework display in a light show.

Every year Gunaltay Mustafa decks his Walworth home with hundreds of Christmas lights and decorations, and asks News readers to donate to the charity that saved his son’s life.

At the age of four Alex was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

After three years of chemotherapy, his family was told a bone marrow transplant was his only hope, without he had just a two per cent chance of survival.

After a match was found on Anthony Nolan’s donor register, Alex made a full recovery and now, at 24, his dad says he ‘lives life to the full’.

Gunaltay, a retired cabbie, said: “The lights started as a way of cheering Alex up and have grown over the years, now

we use them to raise awareness of this charity, so please give a little which will mean a lot to this charity and families like ours.

“We would like to say thank you in advance for your support and wish you all a very Merry Christmas.”

In the bleak mid-winter

General election 2019: The full list of Southwark candidates and parties revealed

November was mostly overcast with higher than average rainfall; this left the ground saturated, making it difficult to finish year-end gardening tasks. A cold snap arrived mid-month bringing low temperatures, and a few welcome bright sunny days.

December weather is usually changeable and often becomes milder and wetter as Christmas approaches. This year’s winter Solstice will fall on December 22nd and marks the beginning of winter. All but essential gardening work stops for a month or so.

There is still time to organise gifts; the gardening sections in High Street book shops can provide inspiration on every subject from pruning to companion planting. But if time is limited, why not browse Hive books www. hive.co.uk.

Alternatively a year’s membership for Kew (starts at £71) or the RHS (£63) may be a welcome gift. Tools are a tricky choice; gardeners can be fussy about what they use!

As winter begins, the focus will be on evergreens – Fir/Spruce trees, Holly, Ivy and Mistletoe, as pot or cut plants. They have symbolic meaning in ancient folklore and we continue the tradition of using these plants for festive celebrations. Ivy (Hedera) is often sold as an indoor pot plant (but found in gardens, scrambling up walls and trees) and was used to decorate rooms during mid-winter festivals;

Mistletoe nestles high up in the tree canopy remaining unnoticed during leaf cover. The twigs and leaves of Mistletoe (not the berries which are poisonous) have medicinal qualities and are used in herbal medicine. Mistletoe is a sacred plant to the Druids; it is believed the custom of kissing under the Mistletoe originates from Druid ceremonies!

A much-hyped sale of Princess Diana’s iconic gown worn to a dance with John Travolta at the White House failed to sell at a Bermondsey auctioneers this week.

The dress failed to meet its reserve price of £200,000 despite being expected to fetch a neat

£250,000-£350,000 at the Kerry Taylor auctioneers on Long Lane.

The Victor Edelstein midnight-blue was also worn by the Princess in 1997 for her portrait by Lord Snowdon.

The dress had previously been bought in 2013 for £200,000 “by a romantic gentleman who wanted basically to cheer up his wife.”

Yet it would appear on Monday there were no romantic gentlemen in the crowd willing to shell out £350,000 for their significant other.

Dual crossword By voting in today’s election you will be helping to find a way forward to rebuild our politically divided society - it’s a patriotic act

W

e’ve covered many elections over the years and, each time, we urge people to exercise their democratic right and cast their vote. It’s a hard-won right, and one that many fought and died for but in spite of this, turn-out is often shockingly low.

The last few general elections have seen only around two-thirds, in some cases less, taking part in the ballot. One in three people are not engaging in politics and their voice will not be heard.

If there is one positive outcome from three years of Brexit arguing, we can at least say people are more politically engaged than they have been for a long time.

We have high hopes turnout will be much higher.

Even if you are griping about the first past the post voting system, or feel no single party or candidate fully aligns with your beliefs, your vote truly does make a difference.

And, if the latest polls are anything to go by, the race could be a lot closer than any of us expected – and even result in a hung parliament.

In this time of uncertainty and constitutional wrangling, our parliament is still recognised as one of the oldest representative assemblies in the world and a beacon of democracy.

Before Brexit, it has wrestled with bigger constitutional fractures from the Reformation, interregnum, act of union, and Irish independence, and throughout has survived and recast itself for modern times.

Abandoning your vote now is the easy way out for the frustrated, irritated and apathetic.

By voting you will be helping to find a way forward to rebuild our politically divided society – it’s a patriotic act.

Patient diagnosed with monkeypox Jonty Bravery

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A patient is being treated at Guy’s and St Thomas’s after contracting the rare monkeypox infection.

They are believed to have contracted it while visiting Nigeria. The infection causes a distinctive rash, often on the face, before scabbing over, alongside fever-like symptoms.

Public health authorities have sought to reassure the public that the virus does not spread easily and that any risk “is very low.”

“Monkeypox does not spread easily between people and the overall risk to the general public is very low,” said Dr Meera Chand, Consultant Microbiologist at Public Health England.

“We are following up with those who have had close contact with the patient to offer advice and to monitor them as necessary.”

The patient had been staying in south west

England before being transferred to Guy’s and St Thomas’s specialist high consequence infectious disease centre.

Monkeypox is usually self-limiting, say experts, but some individuals can suffer severe illness as a result.

The authorities are now contacting people who might have been in close contact with the patient, including those who were in close proximity to them on the same flight to the UK. These “rapid infection control procedures” are a precaution, says Public Health England.

“PHE and the NHS have well established and robust infection control procedures for dealing with cases of imported infectious disease and these will be strictly followed to minimise the risk of transmission,” added Dr Chand.

The first UK cases of monkeypox were reported in 2018. Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by monkeypox virus and is reported mainly in central and west African countries.

Teenager Jonty Bravery admitted attempted murder on Friday, after throwing a six-year-old boy off the roof of the Tate Modern in August.

The victim, who had been visiting London on holiday, suffered a deep bleed on his brain among other serious injuries.

The boy’s family, who are French, have spoken of their anguish as their boy continues to be in pain from the 100-foot fall.

“Our son still needs intensive rehabilitation since he hasn’t recovered mobility in all limbs or cognitive capacities,” they said in an emotional statement.

“He is constantly awoken by pain and he can’t communicate that pain or call out to hospital staff. Life stopped for us four months ago.

“We don’t know when, or even if, we will be able to return to work, or return to our home, which is not adapted for a wheelchair. We are exhausted, we don’t know where this all leads, but we go on.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Members of the Maypole Project’s youth club, for young people with complex medical and educational needs, took on London’s biggest Santa fun run at the weekend.

The 5k Santa fun run, held last Sunday, December 8, saw the youngsters, some of whom have been supported by its team since early childhood, raising funds for the Bromley-based charity. So far, they have achieved more than a thousand pounds in sponsorship.

The Maypole Project aims to provide a supportive, social environment to help young people with special educational needs, from across south London, make friends, continue learning, and gain the skills and confidence they need to help the transition into adulthood.

Lily, 16, a youth club member who receives counselling from the charity, was diagnosed with complex medical needs at the age of four. She says being part of the group allows her to “enjoy

conversations and feel like a young adult with my own opinions”. She is also starting to develop friendships, something that has previously been a struggle.

On their online fundraising page, the team explained: “We are a group of young people who are supported by the Maypole Project. We attend their regular youth club sessions every other Thursday. The youth club sessions are great fun as we do various activities such as Clip and Climb, we go bowling, and we run our own tuck shop which we are very proud of.

“When we are at our youth club venue we love catching up with our friends by playing pool or table tennis or on the Wii whilst also gaining confidence in social situations.

“We have decided to give something back to The Maypole Project by setting ourselves a challenge in taking part in the Do It For Charity London Santa Run to fundraise for the Maypole Project, to get healthy and fit, inspire ourselves to take on bigger challenges in the future, like a bigger distanced run, and because we are fast and furious runners.”

A new exhibition of paintings inspired by an East Dulwich artist's experience of living with Multiple Sclerosis is on display in Red Post Hill.

Fifty-two-year-old Jolie Goodman's Swimming in the Slow Lane is formed of acrylic paintings and digital prints inspired by her love of swimming.

Goodman was diagnosed with MS eight years ago, and turned to swimming to help manage the condition.

Since then, she says a plant-based wholefood diet, vitamin D supplements, regular exercise and reducing stress have helped deal with the symptoms.

On first being diagnosed, she said: "It was a huge shock, but I was helped by a family friend who also has MS. She told me MS was nothing to be afraid of."

The exhibition is on display until the end of January, looking to raise funds for the charities Overcoming MS and the Mental Health Foundation.

Goodman, who works two days a week for Mental Health Foundation, said both the charities' advice and support had made a huge difference.

“My husband did some research and with some trepidation I started the OMS diet in May 2017," she explained.

“We wish to thank all of the people, family and friends who have supported us throughout this horrific experience.”

Police have said there is no clear motive for Bravery’s actions, despite reports that he has admitted doing it so that he could be on TV. “This was an incredibly unusual and traumatic event and I can only imagine the horror the victim’s family felt as they realised what had happened to their child,” said the Met’s DCI John Massey. “The motive behind Jonty Bravery’s actions remains unclear.”

It has been reportef that his lawyer told the court he had been assessed as having autistic spectrum disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and was likely to have a personality disorder. Bravery, 18, is expected to be sentenced in February next year.

"And with regards to other aspects of the OMS programme, I was fortunate to have an understanding of stress reduction, through my work in mental health.

"I enjoy practising meditation and I find being mindful in my own life, helps underpin my work as well. My health is improving and I feel healthier. While my left side is still weaker, it no longer feels like concrete.

"I no longer find myself so overwhelmed by exhaustion that I have to lie on the floor to rest in the middle of hanging up the washing. I now know that pizzas taste fantastic without cheese.

"My exercise of choice is swimming, hence my exhibition, Swimming in the Slow Lane.

"I swim for health, exercise and because I enjoy it. I always feel better for a swim.

"I’m not fast but this Autumn I have swum 2000 metres in one stretch. I find the experience of my morning swims inspiring.

"I’ve been an artist for over 30 years. At a stage in my life when my artistic practice is pushed for time, making digital drawings after swimming has been a way to sustain my artwork.

"Each swim is different. The digital prints are my memories of the people and goings on in the slow lane.

Being on the OMS programme has provided me with a way to be more in control of my life, to change lanes when life is challenging, to improve my quality of life and to feel hopeful for the future.”

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The fully restored Christopher Wren church spire in the middle of a Sydenham cul-de-sac has been unveiled.

As the News reported last month, the spire which once sat atop a City church was designed by Wren after the great fire of London.

It eventually made its way into the

garden of a wealthy printer from Bermondsey, after the church fell into disrepair.

The garden is now a street of 20th century housing, which was built around the exact spot where the spire still stands.

The landmark was restored with funding from the Heritage for London Trust after wear-and-tear damage built up over the years. It has also had its weather vane re-guilded.

Year five pupils from Holy Trinity Primary School joined the charity at a ribbon cutting along with the conservation team, including London Stone Conservation, L&Q, and local history and community groups.

Freya Joseph-Howe, aged 10, who cut the ribbon, said: “I loved cutting the ribbon because I’ve never done it before. I’m going to bring all of our family up to see it.”

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A drug dealer from Camberwell has been jailed for running a county-lines operation in Dorset.

Abdul-Azhiz Kamara (pictured) from Camberwell New Road, was handed five-years and two months in prison after admitting dealing class A drugs and breaching a suspended sentence order.

The 26-year-old was sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on Friday, December 6.

Dorset police first stopped him in a car on Friday, March 8, at around 1.20am in Weymouth. He was in the passenger seat and found to be in possession of more than £1,000 in cash, a wrap of crack cocaine and two Xanax tablets.

Five days later police stopped a Volkswagen Golf in Poole, and found Kamara in the passenger seat with more cash and several wraps of heroin and crack.

On both occasions police seized mobile phones with messages seeming to show he was dealing.

Kamara was released under

investigation. Two months later officers on patrol in Dorchester saw Kamara in the company of a ‘known drug user, and saw him throw some items from his pocket before fleeing.’

He managed to escape, but left behind 50 wraps of heroin at the scene.

On July 2, at around 6pm, officers on patrol in a known drug-dealing hotspot in Weymouth saw Kamara on a bicycle with a group of suspected drug users.

They said as an officer approached him, Kamara attempted to cycle off before falling off and continuing on foot before being detained.

He had five wraps of heroin and cocaine, three mobile phones and two SIM cards on him. A further 60 wraps were found in a garden nearby. In all, the street value of the drugs he had was estimated at more than £1,400.

Police analysed the phones and found that drugs had been advertised with ‘broadcast’ messages sent to more than 70 numbers. Kamara was charged the next day.

Detective Constable Declan Cummings, of Weymouth CID, said: “It is clear Abdul-Azhiz Kamara was involved in a significant county line operation where he handled dedicated mobile phone lines to facilitate the supply of class A drugs.

“Despite being arrested on a number of occasions, he continued to conduct his operations and I am glad that through our proactive patrols we were able to catch Kamara in the act on Tuesday 2 July 2019 and bring him to justice for his offending.

“We recognise the damaging impact the supply of class A drugs and related activity has on society and we are determined to ensure those who are involved in the supply chain are identified and dealt with.”

King’s warn norovirus sufferers to stay away

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk King’s College Hospital is asking people with norovirus to avoid going to hospital or the GP to help prevent the spread of the virus.

There are reports of the bug circulating in Southwark including outbreaks at schools and in nurseries.

Although no wards have had to

be closed so far due to the highly contagious illness, the hospital is advising people with symptoms to stay at home to help prevent an outbreak in the hospital.

A small number of cases at the hospital have been dealt with in the usual way, such as treating the patients in isolation to prevent the spread.

In a statement a spokesperson for the trust said: “If you experience diarrhoea

and vomiting, please avoid coming to our hospital as it is easily spread to our staff and patients.

“Instead stay at home, drink plenty of water, and rest.”

Although so far Southwark’s hospitals appear to be unscathed, across the north-east schools have been closed and in England as a whole more than 1,100 hospital beds have been closed due to the virus.

From last week, all Tesco shops now provide the lanyards to help people with less obvious disabilities discreetly highlight that they may need a little more assistance.

Staff will then be able to speak faceto-face to help with lip reading, help with packaging bags and carrying to cars, or read labels for those who are

partially sighted.

Tesco has also committed to increasing the number of accessible toilets in its supermarkets across the country from 49 to 75 in total.

Alessandra Bellini, Tesco Chief Customer Officer said: “We work hard to ensure that everyone feels welcome at Tesco and want our stores to be as accessible as possible.

“It’s clear how important Changing Places and sunflower lanyards are to our customers who need them and we’ll continue to explore ways we can do more for customers with disabilities.”

Christmas is on the horizon and Whistle Down the Wind, originally a novel by Mary Hayley Bell and later a 1953 film, has been adapted for the stage in this production by Russell Labey and Rich-ard Taylor that is brimming with festive spirit, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor...

Set in the 1940s, schoolchildren busily rehearse for their annual nativity play: angel wings, three wise men, the works. Meanwhile, attempting to save kittens from death, Cathy, (Sadie Levett) stumbles across a bearded stranger - an escaped convict (Juan Miralles) in the farmyard barn. Combined with children’s limitless imagination, this curious newcomer is looking rather heaven sent.

However, pitting children’s innocent faith against adult fear and cynicism, events unfold revealing fear is not reserved for criminals alone, but resides in parents, teachers, clergy and police.

The scep-ticism casts a dark shadow when mirrored against the children’s humour and purity of heart. Adult audience members may yearn for their lost innocence.

Impressive stage sets and costume design give the play an authenticity and fluidity. Children gallop about in tweeds, wellie boots and ankle socks

amongst charming candle lit backdrops, transporting us back to a nostalgic era, allowing us to escape the modern world for a couple of hours. Characters move seamlessly between scenes, drawing us into their world where a secret drives the plot and builds tension.

Children sing sweetly of growing up to “live on gooseberry jam” while adults chime in with “Chil-dren belonging inside caves”. Generational conflict provides great opportunity, songs range from sweetly melodic harmonies to dramatically scathing numbers, lending the play depth.

Despite the stranger danger, this play is laden with humour, especially in the form of Tara Lucas, playing a little girl called Nan, who lightens the air

with her antics; contrasting well with Cathy’s responsible determination to do the honourable thing. Above all, the children do exactly what they are born to do - see life through young eyes, and that is inescapably funny.

In all, a gem of a play, definitely worth seeing, that invites audiences into a rosy glowing era, where potential danger lurks, while reminding us of our once blind faith.

Panto in a pub gets punters singing

I’ve just seen the worse Christmas panto ever but still had a good time, writes Michael Holland...

This Cinderella - sold as ‘a one stop shop for a Christmas night out: a panto set in a pub, plus karaoke’ - was a shambles, but a funny shambles.

Because the set was a pub where the audience could buy drinks - with the cast mingling and drink-ing alongside us - it was difficult to know when the panto actually begun. Mike, a burly lad in a short gold lamé dress, came round taking names and choices for the Karaoke session, so Fiona, my panto companion, put us down for a couple of songs.

Then a man in a dog suit onesie came over, called me ‘ugly’ and hit me over the head with the plas-tic leg he’d been carrying in his mouth. Next to approach our table was Simone, the twin sister of Garfunkel, who took my name down for being a ‘naughty boy’. The IPA helped me through all this.

Without really knowing what was going on, this was all very amusing

until in amongst the mayhem someone shouted out for Cinderella! A girl, who had been next to me at the bar just a few minutes earlier, appeared and was promptly told to clean up the pub. We realised the panto had started, alt-hough we did not know precisely when it had.

The madness continued. The man in the onesie was Buttons - a smelly, suicidal dog; Simone and Garfunkel were the Ugly Sisters; their mother was Judy Garland and had actually served me a cou-ple of pints just a while before she turned up and started to berate her put upon daughter Cinderella; Mike was the Dame as well as a barman(or barmaid…), and we had a rather quirky Prince Charming turn up to seek a wife that fit into his dead nan’s old slippers. A pub pretty much like most of the Wetherspoons I’ve frequented, so I felt at home.

With more Karaoke than narrative going on, and audience participation designed to embarrass, I worked out some similarities to the traditional Cinderella story, but not many. The

twins tried to force their feet into Prince Charming’s nan’s orthopaedic slipper, without any luck, and when Cin-derella’s foot slipped in quite easily he promptly proposed, only to be told to ‘Eff off!’

So nothing conventional about this panto.

Afterwards, with mum and her daughters all back behind the bar, I soon had the inebriated crowd on their feet with my rendition of Play That Funky Music White Boy, before Fiona performed a du-et with Transvestite Mike. Alas, their attempt at ‘I Got You, Babe’, didn’t arouse the same reception as mine. You can’t win ‘em all, they say, and this version of Cinderella will, I think, have a sim-ilar response.

Dickens on the lash The wonderful folk at Magnificent Bastard productions, who have brought us many seasons of joy through Shit-faced Shakespeare, charge their glasses and present Shitfaced Showtime: A Pissedmas Carol for their tipsy take on the seasonal Dickens classic, writes Christopher Peacock...

For those that don’t know, a Shitfaced show is unlike any other.

Before each performance a different member of the cast is plied with booze and then sent on stage. Like a toy car with a loose wheel, they struggle to stay on track as audience members serve as the moderators of inebriation. If the allocated audience members feel sobriety is on the horizon for the performer, they indicate so and the narrator stops the show to supply the cast member with another beverage. Hence the ensemble need to be quick to move the show on and roll with the punches and whatever else could get thrown their way.

No two shows are ever the same and this well drilled framework suits this Dickens classic to a tee.

The narrator, in this case Dickens himself, helps nurse the drunk performer through and keep the

show on time. The adaptation needs to be brisk to fit the hour time slot and this is very well crafted, with modern musical numbers thrown in for another good measure. It’s not only the ghosts of Christmas past present and future in high spirits, the laughs keep rolling on even when the show seems to get a bit chaotic. The cast improvise well and handle everything with good humour, turning in some great comedy performances whilst keeping the show on the road.

This time of year pantomimes dominate stages across the UK and Shit-faced’s brand of show may be seen as a modern take on the genre that has been a mainstay of theatres for over 100 years. With a raised glass to the cast and crew it was a joyous night. A seasonal laugh, but maybe not for all the family.

Another Christmas winner from Greenwich Theatre Photo by Robert Day

The legendary Greenwich Theatre Panto is back with Sleeping Beauty and it just gets better and better with the bestest dame and baddest baddie, writes Chloé Coleman...

Act one opens up to Tom Scutt’s lilactinted set, the home of the well-off, African-American family The Frasiers.

Beverly (Nicola Hughes) is preparing for her mother's birthday meal while her husband Dayton (Rhashan Stone) seeks to smooth and soothe the chaos.

The arrival of Beverly’s catty, difficult sister Jasmine (Naana Agyei-Ampadu) and daughter Keisha (Donna Banya), with requests of a gap year, proves too much for Beverly and she faints. It feels like an episode of a 90s’ American sitcom so we sit and watch.

Chock full of classic family drama tropes there is, however, something a little too perfect – too manicured. The sound system crackles spontaneously.

The whole family break out into perfectly choreographed dance numbers. The smiles are just a little too beaming. Then the curtains close for a moment and with the flourish of a fanfare we are into the second act. Only it is strangely familiar. We are back at the beginning. While we are re-watching the opening scenes and while the actors are moving their mouths and replicating their movements from moments before, the audience hears an audio-track of a group of four’s conversation while they are watching the all-American, family drama of act one, debating which race they would pick if they had the choice.

And there it is, the rug is well and truly pulled out from under the audiences feet as you are sat, face to face with a critique of our presumptions and preconceptions towards race and the attitudes they fuel. And it is uncomfortable. It forces you to question those cultural assumptions white audiences make when watching a play, or a film or a TV show about people of colour – ones that the majority of the audience will have made during the first act, consciously or otherwise.

Sibbles Drury suggests that despite the steps in the right direction toward better representation, a racist framework remains under a ‘white gaze’. The message is clear. It is a predominantly white audience watching black actors perform for them. From this point on the author’s message becomes louder and clearer, leaving no apologies or ambiguity. If by this point in the evening the meaning of the title ‘Fairview’ isn’t comprehended then you really haven’t been paying attention.

The ending really is a secret worth guarding but trust this – it is intelligent and passionate. It will make the white liberal theatre audiences (of which I am a part of myself) feel uncomfortable and ashamed, but the magic of Jackie Sibblies Drury and director Nadia Latif makes you incredibly glad that you were there to witness it anyway. It is powerfully challenging and thoughtprovoking. It is definitely a play to see and to shut up and listen to. I assure you, you won’t have seen anything like it.

When love and war collide there is nowhere to hide

Three lonely microphone stands stood on a spartan stage as the audience took to their seats, writes Michael Holland...

The music playing was not what I expected for Cyrano de Bergerac, a French farce. The backdrop lifted and a dark-clad cast walked on from the shadows and began performing a Hamlet that turned in to a rap battle.

After a while I realised that the whole evening was going to be delivered in rhyme - A poetry slam for posh theatregoers.

But this version stays as close to Edmond Rostand’s original as modern day English will allow, and actually depicts the natural progression of Rostand’s 19th century play that was written in verse.

Cyrano de Bergerac is a genius with the pen and a hero in battle, but painfully aware of his exceed-ingly large nose.

We hear all about how his big nose almost killed his mother at its birth; we hear it compared with mountain ranges, songs are sung about it and jokes are made. But when James McAvoy in the title role appears there is no nose to speak of. In fact, there were bigger hooters on stage that never got a mention!

Cyrano loves the beautiful Roxane and has done for many years, but she loves another - Christian. She tells childhood friend Cyrano about the man of her dreams and asks him to look after Christian when they go off to war. As gutted as he is, Cyrano, with a heavy heart, agrees.

The long distance romance continues with Cyrano writing his love rival’s love letters, which make Roxane fall in love with Christian more and more each day a billet-doux arrives, until Christian, an empty-headed soul, realises their relationship is fake, a sham, and that in reality he cannot compete with the words that she believes are his. And when you mix love with war there will blood and death.

Although Bergerac was a 17th century character there is nothing Baroque going on here. The cast are mostly young and urban and dress accordingly, and the only music is supplied not by Bach but by Beatboxer Vaneeka Dadhria.

The lyrics in this new Martin Crimp version are delivered outwards - at the audience, leaving little interaction between the players, which subsequently left little opportunity to see and be moved by any relationships forming. Another barrier created by

dress winning out. And the quick set changes kept everyone continually engaged.

Nancy was eager to get a love pudding when they came into the audience so she could throw them back at the end, but throughout the show she kept asking, ‘Can I chuck it now?’ I made sure my love pudding landed on Rasputin…

We all love a bad boy!

Off of the back of two hugely successful runs in New York and winning the Pulitzer Prize for drama it will be to no one’s surprise that Jackie Sibblies Drury’s Fairview really is one of those must see moments in the theatre, writes Rosie O’Connell...

Of course, there is something for all ages in a traditional panto so my 6-year-old Nancy was wetting herself from the start to the finish, as was I. She loved all the characters, especially baddie Rasputin (Anthony Spargo), and she loved lobbing the love puddings at him at the end. It had adult humour throughout and the songs were hilarious - Chart songs with lyrics changed to add to the story’s narrative.

Nancy even came home singing ‘Cos I’m a bad guy’, and I’m already tiring of

the panto mantra: ‘You don’t touch the corn; you leave the corn alone!’ that she continues to shout at me.

Greenwich Theatre puts on a proper panto with 100% percent interaction with the audience. The banter was amazing when they sought someone to look after the black pudding, and everyone piped up hoping it was them getting picked. Us included.

Yes, the fart jokes ignited the kids of all ages, and the time shifts didn’t faze anyone. Even landing on the moon in the 60s with Austin Powers making an appearance did not confuse because there was so much fun to be had.

The flamboyant change of outfits from the Tsarina, Sleeping Beauty’s mum, were a joy to see, with her black pudding

this chancy production is that rap is invariably shouted, so comes across as antagonistic, hence much of the comedy becomes lost in a war of words.

Some laughs were created through injokes, and some of the more amusing rhymes. Basical-ly Jamie Lloyd’s Cyrano de Bergerac is the Kurupt FM crew doing The Bard in their pirate radio station squat and may divide audiences.

It is good when the theatre world which is often fighting off elitism slurs - reaches out with one hand to a more diverse audience with this modern, rap version, but with these West End prices it will be putting them off with the other.

Nevertheless, this is a very powerful piece of work. McAvoy commands that stage. His performance is first-class and proves his ability to do anything and everything for his art. His is an outstanding performance.

Is it for me? No. Will it be enjoyed by others? Some.

The Ashes

Michael Ash held by his nan

Michael Ash looks back on the Blitz, hopping holidays and a life in the book business Kathleen Ash would have had her baby in Eugenia Road if it wasn’t for Hitler, writes Michael Holland...

The family were hopping in Kent when their street was bombed so Mrs Ash booked herself into Pembury Hospital to give birth to Michael.

They then evacuated to North Devon while dad Albert stayed and worked in Woolwich Arsenal until that got bombed and he got his call-up papers.

On rare trips back to London young Michael vaguely remembers searchlights raking the sky, air raid sirens and dashes to the shelters.

Sometimes “you got in the cupboard under the stairs.” He was too young to remember the farm they evacuated to but does remember vividly the day his dad was demobbed. “I sat outside waiting for him to come home, and when I saw him come round the corner I ran towards him, tripped over and got two black eyes!”

After the war, Mike went to Rotherhithe New Road School and then Greenwich Central. Boyhood pastimes included boxing and cricket, which Michael still follows today. He was also altar boy at St Katherine’s, the church in his street, where services were held in the vicarage after the church was bombed. “My mum used to speak of when I was christened there during an air raid!” he begins. “.” Hence, two neighbours were quickly drafted in as godparents to ensure baby Michael’s ticket to heaven was secured.

Hopping was an annual holiday for the Ash family. “We went to Whitbreads Farm until the 1953 floods, and after that we picked at Frittenden… Then my grandmother bought an old coach, which got stripped out, converted into rooms, then towed down to Sheerness where she parked it in a field. We holidayed there a lot -it’s where I quickly learnt to swim after a wave swept me off my feet,” he claims.

“My mum, Kate, was a wonderful pianist,” Michael remembers. “She played regularly in the St Helena

I was christened during an air raid.

People were terrified of not having their children christened in those days Tavern on a Saturday night, and when down Sheppey she played in the Minster Hotel where the boss thought it was wonderful how she attracted big crowds.”

This reminiscing led to Mike recalling meeting his wife Jackie in the Tiger’s Head in Catford in the ‘60s. “55 years later we’re still going strong,” he says.

Michael’s first job was at The Star as a messenger boy for £3 2s 0d a week. “I loved it!” He went to work in a suit and tie while other messengers turned up in jeans, and this made him stand out because over the coming years he would be chosen for special duties. Most of his bosses had fought as officers so would recognise a willingness to work. Eventually, Michael was moved to the publishing department which produced the I Spy books, where he learnt all you needed to know about production. One job was taking copies of new books to the bosses. “Even though I was just a little cog, those directors still made me feel important, and I took that all the way through my business life.”

At 20, Michael decided he needed to improve his education so enrolled at night school. He enjoyed the studying, comparing it favourably to his schooldays and the horrible environment created by spiteful teachers. Plus, he was able to stay in employment.

Because National Service had stopped, Mike moved steadily upwards until he could earn no more or go no higher. At 29, with the skills and knowledge he had acquired, he felt it time to move on so put feelers out to his contacts. A buyer at WH Smith

put him in touch with a children’s books’ publisher where Michael talked himself into a Sales Manager’s job, travelling all over the country and coming home at weekends. Business boomed so much the company couldn’t supply his demand for books so, against his boss’s wishes, Mike bought up ‘remainder’ stock wherever he could so he always had something for clients. He saw money to be earnt, and that became the catalyst for him branching out on his own with a business in Greenwich that expanded to selling toys as well as books, with Michael doing the selling, the packing and the delivering.

In the mid ‘80s, while his business grew, Michael was introduced to the Rotary Club and saw a chance to give something back to Bermondsey when he realised more could be done for the OAPs’ Christmas party. “When I joined they were sat in a cold mission hall and given a box with a sandwich in and a gift worth 50p! I thought that was really poor so took charge for the next 25 years,” he says. The party improved with good food, sherry, proper entertainment and a bag of essentials to take home.

By now his firm had grown. Michael employed family members and people he had met in his career, and it moved to Camberwell. Eventually more staff were taken on as the company expanded and he was able to buy the old Garnar’s Leather Factory near Abbey Street where his business, which had now moved into publishing, located to. “It mushroomed. We were exporting to Asia, America, New Zealand, Australia and the turnover was now just over £10 million a year…

It was the best 40 years of my life,” says the man who looks like he has enjoyed every minute of it.

Michael Ash says he was lucky, but he made every bit of that luck himself to achieve what he did. Nowadays the Ashes don’t holiday in a converted coach in a field but in their home in Spain, on cruises, and pretty much anywhere the fancy may take them.

PEDAL CYCLEWAY 35: BERMONDSEY TO PECKHAM The London Borough of Southwark Cycle Tracks Order (Pedal Cycleway) (No. *) 20**, The London, Borough of Southwark (Prescribed routes) (Commercial Way and Sumner Road) Traffic Order 20**, The London Borough of Southwark (Waiting and loading restrictions) (Amendment No. *) Order 20**.

1. Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that it proposes to make the above orders under sections 6 and 124 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, or in the case of the cycle tracks order, under section 3 of the Cycle Tracks Act 1984, as amended, following the procedure set out in the Cycle Tracks Regulations 1984.

2. The general effect of the prescribed routes and the waiting and loading restrictions orders, would be in:(a) COMMERCIAL WAY to prohibit vehicles, except pedal cycles using the segregated two-way cycle track, from entering into or proceeding in that part of Sumner Road which is north of its junction with Commercial Way; (b) SUMNER ROAD to prohibit northbound vehicles, except pedal cycles using the segregated two-way cycle track, from entering into or proceeding in that part of Sumner Road which is north of its junction with Commercial Way; (c) introduce new, and convert existing single yellow line waiting restrictions to, ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions in: COOPER’S ROAD both sides at its junction with Rolls Road, south-east side at its junction with Harmony Place and its junction Mawbey Place; GLENGALL ROAD north-east side at its junction with Old Kent Road, and across the pinch-point north of Bianca Road; MAWBEY PLACE both sides at its junction with Cooper's Road; MAWBEY ROAD both sides at its junction with Mawbey Place; OXLEY CLOSE both sides at its junction with Rolls Road; and ROLLS ROAD both sides at its junction with Cooper’s Road and at its junction with Oxley Close so as to accommodate the provision of a new footway and carriageway layout in the Cycleway route and the traffic calming measures detailed below.

The general effect of the cycle tracks order, in conjunction with the powers conferred by section 65(1) of the Highways Act 1980, would be to introduce two-way segregated cycle tracks for use of pedal cycles only each of 2.5m in width and on the western footway at the following locations:- (a) west of Trafalgar Avenue, between a point 6 metres south of the southern kerb-line of Neate Street to a point 29 metres south of that kerb-line; (b) west of Trafalgar Avenue, between a point 51 metres south of the southern kerb-line of Neate Street and the northern kerb-line of St George’s Way; (c) west of Sumner Road, between the southern kerb-line of St George’s Way and the northern kerb-line of Davey Street; (d) west of Sumner Road, between the southern kerb-line of Davey Street and the north-western kerbline of Sumner Road (o/s No. 40 Sumner Road); and (e) west of Sumner Road and across its junction with Commercial Way, between a point 4 metres north of the northern kerb-line of Commercial Way and a point 12 metres south of the southern kerb-line of Commercial Way. 4. By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET still can’t get that elusive first league win since August and this time it was a controversial penalty awarded fifteen minutes from time that denied them against Dartford at Champion Hill last weekend.

With Gavin Rose’s side leading 1-0, Christian Smith seemed to win the ball only for a spot-kick to be awarded and Elliott Romain fired home from twelve yards to leave the majority of the 2,365 crowd disappointed.

Smith had given the hosts the lead in the 48th minute and they looked set to see the game out before the visitors grabbed that fortunate equaliser.

Dulwich started brightly with Nyren Clunis going close to opening the scoring in the eighth minute but his effort from the left went just wide.

Darren McQueen was the biggest threat for the Darts and he created space for Liam Gordon to cross for Luke Wanadio in the 21st minute but Preston Edwards saved bravely at his feet and Dulwich cleared.

Dartford’s Mark Smith then almost gifted the home side the lead when he fumbled Lionel Ainsworth’s effort, but the goalkeeper reacted to stop the ball from rolling over the line.

Ainsworth tested Smith again with a fierce drive after Danny Mills and Ben Dempsey had combined and Mills then had the chance to put Ainsworth through but didn’t measure his pass

Hold my beer: Hamlet fans brought all the support they could find well enough and the midfielder was forced wide with the chance gone.

It was mostly Dulwich and David Ijaha had an opportunity but saw his shot blocked and Mills couldn’t take advantage of the loose ball.

Romain had the last chance of the first half but after going past Smith he shot wide.

Dartford pressed for an opener immediately after the break and put the hosts under pressure, before

Dulwich countered and took the lead.

David Ijaha broke forward before he was fouled on the edge of the area by a scrambling defence. From the resulting free kick, Smith fired his shot through the wall to give his side the lead.

Dartford responded through the livewire McQueen who should have equalised, before Quade Taylor missed a gilt-edged chance with a header.

It was end to end and Ainsworth

had to be defensively alert to deny McQueen from Tyrique Hyde’s cross.

The Kent side were then left wondering how they weren’t level when they struck both posts before Taylor cleared off the line.

But their – and Dulwich’s – luck turned in the 75th minute when Smith was harshly penalised for an apparent foul on Romain. The striker gave Edwards no chance from the spot.

It was then the Hamlet’s turn to be denied by the woodwork in the 86th minute when Ainsworth found Nathan Smith with a sweeping pass and the defender’s effort beat Smith but bounced back off the far post.

The result moved Dulwich up a place to eighteenth in National League South, but they are just two points above Hungerford in the last relegation spot.

Dulwich are in FA Trophy first-round action when they travel to Hornchurch this Saturday for a 3pm kick-off.

They return to league action the following Tuesday night when they host Havant & Waterlooville.

The 22-year-old began his career with Hayes & Yeading and also played for North Greenford United, Uxbridge, and Hendon and Wealdstone, before joining Harrow Borough.

Last season he scored 24 goals in 28 appearances during a fourmonth spell at Harrow, before signing for Sutton in February. He made fourteen appearances in the National League, scoring twice.

Kearney played for Sutton when the Hamlet faced them in preseason in July and scored both goals in Sutton’s 2-0 victory.

Kearney made his debut last Saturday at home to Dartford, coming on in the 82nd minute for Nyren Clunis.

The Hamlet are the sixth-lowest scorers in National League South with 23 goals in nineteen games as they sit just two points above the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, Dulwich Hamlet Women defeated QPR 2-0 last Sunday to return to the top of the London & South East Regional Premier Division table.

It was an emotional afternoon at Champion Hill as the club remembered their former coach Farouk Menia, who passed away recently.

QPR arrived with a 100 per cent record but fell behind when Ella Wales Bonner found Ana De Pellegrin and she kept her composure to fire her side in front.

Brit Saylor and Rosie Stone controlled midfield to allow Wales Bonner to break forward.

In the 76th minute the ball broke to Wales Bonner and she smacked home a superb volley.

With the result the Legends will start 2020 at the top of the table holding a 10-1 record.

The Eagles started the game on fire as they jumped into a 12-5 lead in the first quarter.

However, thanks to the play of Ade Adeyinka on both sides of the court, the Legends were able to come back

Fisher had trailed to Jerome Wade’s 21st-minute opener, but Lockwood ensure tails were wagging after he bagged a point for Ajay Ashanike’s side.

Non League Dogs Day encourages owners to bring their pooches to the football, and there was a healthy fourlegged turnout in Rotherhithe.

And the Fish gave themselves a leg up by avoiding a fourth consecutive

defeat. They are fifteenth in the SCEFL Premier Division table ahead of this Saturday’s 3pm kick-off at home against Deal Town.

illness aged just eighteen months old.

Nathan Angel lost on a split decision but Aji Oluwo claimed victory on a unanimous scorecard.

Oluwo boxed L'Marr French from Sting ABC, the opponent he lost to in last year’s final.

But this year was a different story.

Oluwo boxed with class from the first round and French just couldn't deal with the improvement that he has made the season.

Oluwo looked like a completely different boxer from the one who lost out last year and boxed at range for all three rounds. French struggled to land a blow and there was little doubt the decision would go Oluwo’s way.

Angel was defeated by Max Noppens of Epsom & Ewell ABC. Unfortunately for Angel he was hampered by a hand injury he picked up in his semi-final win the previous week.

He was unable to use it during training in the week leading up to the final and when he did throw it during the bout the pain shot up his arm.

A scan in accident and emergency after the fight showed that he had fractures in his wrist and thumb.

Coach Terry Pearson said: “We’re making no excuses, Noppens boxed well and deserved his victory.

“We knew Nathan was carrying an injury but it was the final and he had beaten Noppens previously on a club show, so we decided to give it a go.

“I would like to thank the whole team, boxers and coaches, for all the hard work they have put in during these championships.”

“It was a fantastic win. It was a potential banana skin but it’s another clean sheet and on to the next round where we want to be,” he said.

“Over the last couple of weeks we’ve been working on out of possession, so I was pleased to get another clean sheet.

What was even more pleasing was that we created lots of chances.

“We didn’t take those chances, we could have had the game killed off by half-time when we could have been four or five goals up. That wouldn’t have been an unfair margin.

“But we carried on and we looked solid at the back. Everyone did us proud. We can only worry about the players that

turn up. We had a small squad again.

“To go for two hours is a credit to them. We are looking to recruit, but the girls who are turning up, they’re not the problem. I’d rather celebrate the positives, being through to the next round.

“Onwards and upwards.”

Drewe, who had missed a penalty in extra-time, was relieved a shootout wasn’t needed.

She said: “I couldn’t get a goal in during the 90 minutes and then it put the pressure on, I didn’t want it to go to penalties seeing as I missed a penalty in extra-time.

“It felt good, we needed the win.

It felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders, I needed to score to save the team, really.”

The Lionesses face Leigh Ramblers at St Paul’s in Rotherhithe in the league this Sunday, their last game of 2019.

Drewe added: “It’s a big game for us. I think we’ll be alright as long as we start off good, get a couple of goals and then keep our shape and our pattern.”

In an age of constant discussion about pressing, Jurgen Klopp’s gegenpressing, false nines, or religiously playing it out from the back, Davidson boils it down to producing “positive, front-foot football”.

Davidson, 43, hooked up with his former team-mate at Leicester, Gary Rowett, after five years as assistant to Tommy Wright at St Johnstone.

Former Blackburn defender Davidson’s ambition is such that he moved to first Stoke and now London, leaving his wife and two kids in Scotland, to “broaden horizons as a coach and a person”.

He and Rowett are renting an apartment together in the capital where they are both studious about the game and keen to learn as much as they can.

Asked what his coaching philosophy is, Davidson replied: “To win, simple as that.”

He added: “I obviously want to play a high-tempo game and if you can pass it, yes. I like to get into the last third as quickly as you can.

“Some games you have to adapt. I’m not one of these coaches who thinks you have to pass it out from the back, you have to play through the lines. For me it’s about positive, front-foot football with high intensity.

“That’s the style I like but ultimately if I think we need to go from back to front quickly I’ll do it. If we need to pass it to break the other team down we’ll do that as well. Ultimately we want to win, same as in any sport.

“My wife will tell you, my kids will tell you, I just want to win. The girls can beat me now in tennis but it makes me happy.

“I study other sports, how they practise, how they train. How do you get better at something from a mental aspect?

“My other main sports are golf, tennis and squash. I look at those and they all have different aspects that you can probably adapt to football. I play them all. Gary will tell you he’s never beaten me yet!

Millwall bounce back from Palace defeat

DANNY MCNAMARA will not be given permission to face his parent club in the third round of the FA Cup.

Right-back McNamara is on a seasonlong loan at Newport from Millwall. He has made eighteen appearances for the League Two side this season.

“When you’ve got a small squad it’s so difficult. I’ve managed at those levels where everyone that’s available is a massive plus for you,” Lions boss Gary Rowett said.

“The squad is a small one which helps in some ways but is a negative in other ways. The small squad keeps them together, there’s a really good ethos.

How I class a great pro is they want to do well, they want to help, they want to work how the manager wants to work, train really hard and pull the dressing room along.

O’Brien provides lIONS first Aid

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk AIDEN O’BRIEN has had to bide his time but he showed he has lost none of his instinct for being in the right place at the right time to rescue a point for Millwall last Friday night.

O’Brien, 26, had played just nine minutes under Gary Rowett before he came on against Forest in the 78th minute.

The Ireland international’s best attribute is probably his ability in the box to read where the ball is going to drop. In the 92nd minute, with the Lions on the verge of losing a game they could have had wrapped up by the break, O’Brien went undetected behind Forest’s defence to follow up Shaun Williams’ shot that was parried by Brice Samba.

When the goalkeeper looked up he saw O’Brien in front of him and the result was inevitable. It was O’Brien’s first league goal almost a year to the day since his last; it was 363 days after he scored in a 2-2 draw against Hull.

That’s a long time to go without a league goal for someone who scored thirteen and fifteen in Neil Harris’ first two full seasons in charge.

O’Brien sees himself as a striker, though he has scored most of his goals from the left wing. He went to Harris during the summer to ask for a chance up front, and he got it playing off Matt Smith as Millwall won their first two home games of the season.

He then lost his place in the side and Rowett sees him more as a forward than a wide player. The problem for him is that Smith, Tom Bradshaw and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson are currently ahead of him in the pecking order.

O’Brien’s injury-time rescue act should never have been needed. Forest were atrocious before the break but Millwall only had Williams’ header from Jed Wallace’s corner to show for their dominance.

Forest were almost completely transformed after the break and former Lions forward Lewis Grabban equalised seconds after coming on before he put the visitors 2-1 up with two minutes left.

That looked like that, before O’Brien showed he still has the goal touch.

Harris joined the Bluebirds six weeks after he quit Millwall following fourand-a-half years in charge. Cardiff are in the mix for the play-off places and Harris will be under pressure to deliver a promotion challenge.

by Harris, twice on loan before a permanent move to south London from Wolves in the summer of 2017.

Wallace has credited Harris with reviving his career, and the attacker’s

current form means he is sure to be in demand in the January transfer window. Harris is clearly a big fan of the player and Cardiff would have the funds if the Lions’ record goal-scorer decided to test his former club with a bid.

Harris often urged Wallace to improve his end product, and the attacker is Millwall’s most productive player this season in combined goals and assists.

“Luckily at the moment it’s coming off for me, so I’ve just got to keep going and hopefully my end product will be alright when I play against Mr Harris’ team at Christmas,” Wallace joked.

“I’m happy for him. They’ve had a good start. It’s different to what he was used to here, they’ve got a huge squad. Even the players they’re leaving off the bench would probably be next to playing here.

“They’ve got big personalities so it’s a new experience for him. I texted him saying, ‘good luck with the new job’.

I said to him I can’t wait to ruin his Christmas!”

Millwall are away at Gary Rowett’s former club Derby this weekend.

The Lions have shown improvement on the road under Rowett, who has demonstrated he isn’t afraid to change the formation or bring in players he

feels can make an impact away from The Den. The Lions hadn’t won away in the Championship this season under Harris.

“We needed to change something away from home no matter who the manager was, we were terrible, to be honest,” Wallace said.

“New ideas keep the opposition guessing as well, sometimes maybe teams knew what they were going to get from us. They’d put a centre-half into midfield and block the long ball to the big man.

“We’ve mixed it up a little bit now, different tactics, players in different positions. I said it to the lads at the start of the season if we could be half the team away that we are at home we can be a top-ten team. Hopefully we can build on a good couple of results away from home.

“When the manager did change the formation [at Swansea] he said the formation wasn’t going to win us the game, it would be the desire to win every 50/50, the desire to run in behind.

“But obviously the formation does give you the platform and it coincides, on the day, with seven or eight individuals playing well. That’s what we’ve had in the last group of games.”

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk THIS WAS, without a doubt, the most impressive performance of the short reign of Gary Rowett.

It led to the best away result since last February when Jed Wallace also scored in a 1-0 win at Derby, though there haven’t been many travel highlights to choose from.

That’s changing. This was a second away win of the season, both of them coming under Rowett in the last three games on the road.

Of course they couldn’t make it easy for themselves or comfortable for their fans as they had to withstand a barrage in the last ten minutes.

Bristol City ended up with goalkeeper Daniel Bentley up front for their last two corners and he was chasing a loose ball trying to get it back into the box when referee Gavin Ward finally blew his whistle with 96 minutes on the clock.

Millwall have now taken fifteen points from Rowett’s eight games in charge; they picked up eleven points in 10 league games under Neil Harris.

The Lions have 30 points from 21 games by December 10. It took them until game 29 on February 2 last season to accumulate the same total.

And if you really want to get carried away they didn’t reach the 30-point mark until December 29 in the 2017-

18 season...when they went on to challenge for a top-six place.

Rowett has stressed a number of times he’s not interested in what’s going on below Millwall in the table.

But it’s worth pointing out that on Tuesday night they were thirteen points above the bottom three and with the pressure off who knows how high they could go.

With players like Wallace and Jayson Molumby there is no point setting a limit because those players have exceeded all expectation this season.

Wallace now has six goals and six assists in his last eleven games. Twelve goal involvements is a prolific output.

And that’s before you analyse what else he brings to the team. His work rate, his pace that terrifies opponents.

His ability to trick his way past people.

And now an outstanding end product, something you always felt was holding him back from getting to that next level.

midfielder with a bite that means opponents rarely get time on the ball.

His anticipation of when to press is also impressive for such a young player with so little senior league experience. It’s hard to believe he had never played a league game before this season and now he looks like one of the most promising midfielders in the division.

It will surely be a priority of Millwall’s to ask Brighton if there is a chance of taking him on a permanent deal.

And there was probably no more relieved a man at Ashton Gate than Jake Cooper. When the News asked him a couple of weeks ago whether the lack of a goal this season was frustrating him, he smiled warily and admitted it was. Well he’s got that monkey off the back after heading Millwall two goals in front with 20 minutes left.

In the drizzle in Bristol that should have left Millwal home and dry. They had taken the lead through Wallace who took a pass from Mahlon Romeo before squeezing a shot inside Bentley’s near post. He has now scored more goals this season, eight, than in any of his previous campaigns with the club.

The Robins had defeated Huddersfield and Fulham 5-2 and 2-1 in their previous two games and were fourth before this fixture. But Millwall were so impressive that they made City seem like a lower-table side.

Lee Johnson’s team appeared to have run out of ideas as the last quarter of an hour approached. There looked no way through, either on the flanks where Romeo and Murray Wallace had everything covered or through the middle where if they managed to get past Molumby or Shaun Williams they were confronted with the colossi of Cooper, Shaun Hutchinson and Alex Pearce. The three of them would head away a jumbo jet if it was headed towards their own goal.

But Bialkowski would not be beaten again and made an outstanding save in the 94th minute to preserve the three points when he stuck out a long right leg to deny Pedro Pereira who was through on the right of the box after a rare lapse by the visiting defence.

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT expects to cop some flak at Pride Park this Saturday – but hopes to have the last laugh for a third time in a row against his former side.

Rowett made 120 appearances for Derby between 1995 and 1998 and took over as their manager in March 2017.

He guided the Rams to sixth in the Championship the following season but they lost to eventual play-off winners Fulham in the semi-finals despite winning the first leg.

Before managing Derby his Birmingham side scored two injurytime goals in a 2-2 draw at Pride Park in 2014-15 before winning there 3-0 the following season.

Rowett left Derby to join Stoke in the summer of 2018 despite still having three years left on his contract. He could have moved to the Potters six months earlier when he was linked with taking over from Mark Hughes.

“I had an opportunity potentially in the January to join [Stoke] in the Premier League,” Rowett said. “It wasn’t something I saw as the right thing to do because we were second in the league. We were building something and I was quite excited by it.

“It’s my local club that I’ve got a lot of history with. It was a really difficult decision to leave. The decision, really, was based on that I didn’t feel that I could carry out the plan that was put in front of me. The plan we spoke about for the following season was really difficult.

“I had an honest conversation with Mel [Morris, the Derby owner]. I still speak to Mel now and get on really well with him. The season after it worked out quite well.

“I made the decision, it was my choice. You can look back on it now and ask if it was the right decision, you could argue possibly not. But that’s life, isn’t it, you do it and

stand by it and accept what comes afterwards.”

Rowett recruited experienced players including current Rams Tom Huddlestone and Curtis Davies.

He continued: “We did that because the team had fallen short over the previous five or six seasons. We felt that it needed players that could take the next step.

“As it was we just couldn’t quite get there. We won the first leg of the play-offs. What I would say is the team finished ninth the season before. We finished in the play-offs and we weren’t that far away.

“We were unfortunate in the sense that we played against probably the best team in the league over the last 20 games in Fulham who obviously went on and got promoted. So we were a little bit unlucky.

“I think we did a reasonable job and could have built on it last season. But it wasn’t to be.

“It’s a great club, I’ve got so much time for it. It will be nice to go back.”

Rowett got a good reception from the home fans when he went back to Birmingham recently, but isn’t expecting the same this weekend.

“Possibly not,” he said. “When people see you leave they feel like it’s a lack of loyalty, and I understand that. There are a lot of things that happen that you don’t want to come out and be public with.

“I still speak to Steve Pearce, the chief exec, I still speak to Mel and have a great relationship with both.

“It’s work, sometimes you make a decision in your working life like a lot of people have to make. As the opposition manager going to Derby I’m sure the fans will give me a bit of stick. They gave me a bit of stick when I went there with Birmingham.

“We weren’t very popular, we scored a last-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw and beat them 3-0.

“It’s going to be a tough game. It’s a great stadium to go to and it’s going to be another good atmosphere.”

GARY ROWETT has insisted Millwall are not a “selling club” – but conceded his players will attract attention in the next transfer window if they are doing well.

Last week a national newspaper report claimed Aston Villa were eying £10million-rated Jed Wallace, but Wallace shrugged off speculation when he spoke to the News.

Rowett revealed he has had discussions with owner John Berylson about potential interest in their players.

“I spoke to John several times on this since joining and John’s said the same thing: we’re not a selling club, we’re not here to sell players, it’s not something

we want to do,” Rowett said.

“If we sell players then a vast amount of that would be invested into the club.

It would be our decision.

“My take on it has always been the same. If we do our job properly as a management staff then players will be sought after by other clubs.

“You can’t have it both ways. You want players to perform well and if they

perform well then other clubs will look at them, just as we’ll look at players at other clubs performing well to see if we can try and sign them.

“It’s not something I’m concerned about. It’s something that happens in December, you get all sorts of different rumours. A lot of them have zero foundation.

“We’re pretty relaxed about it.”

Meanwhile, Rowett has spoken about what Connor Mahoney needs to do to force his way into the side on a regular basis.

There were big expectations on Mahoney when he joined for a sevenfigure sum from Premier League Bournemouth in the summer.

Mahoney started well and had two assists as Millwall won their first two league games at The Den, but he has struggled to impose himself in some games.

“There are a couple of things and I’ve spoken to Connor about it,” Rowett said.

“It’s about finding that consistency and also, with any player, you have to be able to trust that they’re going to do the other side of the game, not just in possession.

“We felt Connor did really well against Swansea but then didn’t affect the game as much as we’d like in a physical game against Wigan. We felt some of the games since would have been similar and that’s why he’s not started.

“He showed coming on the pitch against Forest in a short period of time that he’s got loads of quality. Anyone with that quality you want to see it matched with the trust off the ball.

That’s something he has to learn.

“He’s a top young player, he’s got loads of potential and it’s up to us to try to get that potential out.”

Rowett sets bar high for Coops

Cooper, 24, finally opened his account for the season when he headed in Millwall’s second goal in their 2-1 win at Bristol City on Tuesday.

Cooper scored four and seven goals in his two full seasons with Millwall, and was the most productive centreback, including assists, in the top four divisions last season.

He admitted recently he was frustrated he hadn’t scored this campaign and he also felt opponents were using illegal means to stop him at set-pieces.

His centre-back colleague Shaun Hutchinson has scored three goals this season and Cooper is now off the mark.

"I'm delighted for Coops,” Rowett said. “If you're 6’6” and can head the ball like he can, ideally you want to be scoring five or six goals a season.

“What I would say is this is more evidence of good set-piece work it's a great way for us to score goals and we've been really good at it. We have players who can score from all different areas.

"I thought we were outstanding, against a side like Bristol City with the home record they have and their position in the League table.”
