In Walworth on Friday, December 6 from 10am-1pm at Inspire, St Peter’s Church on Liverpool Grove is hosting the by the Southwark Pensioners Action Group’s hustings.

The Labour Party’s manifesto, announced last week, is conspicuously quiet on electoral reform despite growing support among its ranks.

Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes is among more than 9,000 to have signed an open letter calling for Corbyn to back proportional representation over our current first-past-the-post system.

Although Labour has pledged to work toward replacing the House of Lords with an elected second chamber, and develop a constitutional convention – the UK currently has no written constitution – it has made no commitment to making our voting system more representative.

Joe Sousek, co-chair of the Make Votes Matter campaign, said: “Labour’s failure to even mention electoral reform in its manifesto is a bitter disappointment to the many members and voters who understand First Past the Post is hopelessly unfit for the 21st century.

“The UK desperately needs Proportional Representation for the House of Commons - so all votes count equally and seats match votes.

“This election will be defined by electoral pacts and tactical voting as parties and voters struggle to overcome the inequities of First Past the Post.

“By refusing to acknowledge this elephant in the polling booth, Labour appears out of touch when it comes to democracy.

“The promise of a Constitutional Convention is a glimmer of hope, but a faint one given

the party’s track record of obstructing and breaking clear promises to reform the voting system.”

The Electoral Reform Society’s senior director, Willie Sullivan, argued: “First past the post politics played a huge role getting us in the current political rut: encouraging tribalism and vilifying cooperation.

“It leads to woefully skewed results, with millions of voters disenfranchised by stale safe seats and disproportionate outcomes.

“It’s time all parties including Labour committed to making seats match votes – and bring Westminster into line with Scotland, Wales and the rest of the advanced world in giving voters a strong voice and real choice every election.”

A cross-party alliance pushing for reform includes The Liberal Democrats; Greens; Scottish National Party; The Brexit Party; Women’s Equality Party; Plaid Cymru in Wales and The Alliance Party in Northern Ireland.

A referendum on whether to introduce an “Alternative Vote” system in 2011 was rejected by the public with a decisive majority.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Alternative winter wonderland in London’s longest graffiti tunnel

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk If you are looking for a free alternative to the Christmas winter wonderland, head down to Waterloo’s Leake Street Arches for graffiti, glitter, the Grinch and Grotty Grottos.

After last year’s success transforming London’s longest graffiti tunnel into a festive urban paradise, Miracle on Leake Street is back, and they are going all out to put on a Christmas extravaganza for one evening only – Tuesday 17 December from 5-9pm.

Organised by the WeAreWaterloo and Southbank business improvement districts, the four hour event is packing in a lot. There will be a screening of Elf, a cross-dressing crooner leading a cabaret sing-song and Burlesque class, a grotty grotto, street food stalls, a wreath making workshop and an

immersive Office Christmas Party experience by the actors from the Vaults.

Now famous as home to London’s longest legal graffiti wall, visitors arriving on the street under Waterloo Station will be greeted by a band of busking reindeer, with guests making their way through the urban snow, past graffiti artists at work, to the centre of the tunnel. There they will find cross-dressing crooner, Alexander Luttley.

Crooner is an American epithet given primarily to male singers of jazz - an ironic term denoting a sentimental singing style. Luttley will be kicking off proceedings by leading a cabaret performance and Burlesque class with two well known artistes.

With the festive tone set, guests can then take a seat, wrap up in a blanket and watch a screening of Elf. At the same time the Vault theatre, who run London’s biggest arts festival

at the arches every January to March, will be holding the VAULT Festival Office Christmas Party. Expect the cheesiest dance moves, cups of punch and guests from the VAULT Festival programme for next year.

Community gardeners, the Meanwhile Club, will be hosting a free Christmas Wreath Making Workshop, and visitors can then take their bespoke creations home with them.

House of Vans, the iconic skateboard brand that has its European headquarters at Leake Street, will be serving up mulled wine and cider, as well as running a skateboard themed carnival game with prize giveaways.

Other giveaways include festive glitter face painting and a goody bag at the Grotty Grotto.

While free donations made will go to the Waterloo Action Centre, a nearby space run by and for the local community for the past 40 years from the former Waterloo Library.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Millwall Supporters’ Club is appealing for fans to help fund a special Christmas lunch for elderly residents after it said it was let down by a sponsor.

The three-course lunch with drinks, a DJ and dancing after is due to be held for 80 local OAPs in partnership with Southwark and Lewisham Age UK, on Thursday, December 19.

But after they said one of the event’s key sponsors for the event pulled out last minute, the club has been left scrambling to meet the cost, trying to do everything it can to make sure the lunch goes ahead as planned. They need to raise £2,000.

Danielle Lake, from Millwall Supporters’ Club, said: “On behalf of all Millwall fans, the Millwall Supporters’ Club regularly lead projects which help benefit the local community and help create memories which will last a life time.

“Along with repair of an emergency response vehicle and relaying a garden for a young fan to enjoy with her brother, this season we have decided to host an Age UK Christmas Event at The Den for the elderly in the local area.

“Support and contributions so far have been well received, but we have unfortunately been let down with regards to the sponsorship of the event, so therefore we desperately need help in part funding the event.

Prowler on the loose exclusive

The four attacks took place between Friday afternoon and Saturday night with all victims touched sexually by the man.

The News understands the women were all alone at the time and were attacked from behind. The first victim was targeted at 4.40pm on Friday, November 22, in Peckham Park Road.

Another woman was attacked at 5.07pm the same day, in Bermondsey’s Argyle Way. The News has been told the victim managed to fight off the man after he grabbed her from behind and

tried to pin her arms to her side.

The following day, on Saturday, November 23, a young girl was attacked in Peckham in Glengall Road at 9.05pm.

Two hours later, at 11pm, a fourth female victim was targeted in Darwin Street between Walworth and Waterloo.

The News understands residents in Darwin Street heard a woman’s screams and rushed to her aid as the attacker was scared off.

At the moment, these crimes are not believed to be linked to a rape in Royal Street on Tuesday, November 12, where a woman was attacked by a stranger outside St Thomas’ Hospital at 1.23am.

Despite an appeal with CCTV footage and images circulated of that suspect, no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information about these attacks should contact the police on 101.

At a City of London Corporation subcommittee meeting to be held next week it is recommended that these restrictions, alongside diverting pedestrians to one footway will be imposed during the works.

The chief coroner, who oversaw the inquest into the London Bridge and Borough Market terror attacks of June 2017, Mark Lucraft QC urged all public bodies responsible for London bridges

to install permanent measures. However this was not included in the eighteen formal recommendations made in his report published just weeks ago. Since the attacks temporary barriers have remained on the bridge to separate the pavement from the carriageway.

These works would also coincide with TfL’s plans to reduce the speed limit on Borough High Street to 20mph by March 2020 (see page 6).

Nominations open for our London Bridge ‘is closing down’ Southwark Blue Plaques

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk For the past sixteen years the News is proud to have been one of the founders of the Blue Plaque scheme here in Southwark and nominations are now open for next year.

After nominations have been vetted and checked, a shortlist will be drawn up for people to vote on.

The scheme came about after the News and Southwark Heritage Association tried to find a way around English Heritage’s strict criteria, that a building must be standing and the person dead for them to qualify.

The latter was not really a problem, but the idea that so much of our rich heritage could not be recognised because a building was no longer there was not acceptable to us. Much of our physical heritage was destroyed in the Blitz, but it is perhaps the 1960s and ‘70s architects who did the most damage. So, we invited Southwark Council to join us in drawing up our own Blue Plaques and getting local people to vote. There are now well over 50 blue plaques across the borough.

Our scheme has allowed the likes of Charles Dickens, Geoffrey Chaucer

and Charlie Chaplin to be honoured on our streets, but also less wellknown historical figures like Phyllis Pearsall, the inventor of the A-Z. In 1935, Pearsall couldn’t find her way to a party in Belgravia so decided to make a completely new map of London, which she did by getting up at 5am each morning and walking every one of London’s 23,000 streets – a distance of 3,000 miles. The result was the A-Z, the first street atlas of London.

Dulwich Village’s Grafton Dance Hall, the historic home of ballroom dancing in London once owned by ballroom supremoes Bob Burgess and Doreen Freeman waltzed to victory in to secure the latest blue plaque.

The dance studio on Village Way won the public vote by a landslide – and more than a thousand votes ahead of runnerup Rotherhithe born entertainer Max Bygraves.

Backed by stars from TV hit show ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ an announcement on the unveiling of the latest plaque is due to be announced.

London Bridge may be closed to drivers next year for six months as part of planned maintenance.

Five million pounds is expected to be spent on the 46-year-old bridge and it could mean that from March next year it will be closed to drivers apart from buses, taxis and cyclists.

Abandoned under bush

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Five abandoned kittens rescued from Burgess Park are being cared for at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

The kittens, just five weeks old, were found wandering loose and on their own under a bush at the weekend by worried residents who took them straight to the home.

Cattery manager Rachel Saunders said: “We’re incredibly grateful to the members of the public who found them and did the right thing by bringing the kittens into Battersea, rescuing them from

an uncertain fate. We don’t know what might have happened to them otherwise.

“We never judge at Battersea and we strongly advise anyone who is struggling to look after any cats in their home to please bring them into Battersea or your local rescue centre.

“It is much safer to bring them in rather than abandoning them.

“Other than being covered in fleas, all five kittens are doing well and recovering from their ordeal.

“They will shortly be going out to a foster home where they can fully recover and be rehomed to loving new homes very soon.”

20mph on key Southwark roads and major work at junctions Road safety measures will see changes across the borough

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Work is due to start this week to reduce the speed limit to 20mph on key central London roads, including main routes in Southwark.

TfL will impose the limit on the major routes it operates in central London including on Borough High Street, Great Dover Street and parts of Druid Street and Bermondsey Street.

The move comes after 128 people were killed in speed-related collisions on the capital’s roads between 2016 and 2018, and forms part of a bid to eradicate road deaths and serious injuries by 2041. Last year 112 people died on London’s roads and a futher 3,954 suffered serious injuries.

The changes are expected to come into force by March. TfL have said work will be completed overnight to ‘minimise the impact on road users’ and it will use ‘single lane closures to avoid any roads being fully closed’, but that is subject to permits.

A 20mph limit on Tooley Street will also be enforced as part of the separate ‘Tooley Streets Healthy Streets’ project at the same time.

The 20mph limit was recently imposed on London Road, St George’s Circus, Westminster Bridge Road and Newington Butts in the Elephant and Castle.

In nearby Camberwell work has begun at the Camberwell Green junction, where wider footways and crossings, resurfacing and ‘early release’ for people cycling at traffic lights at all arms of the junction are being installed. This is part of TfL’s Safer Junctions Scheme to be put in place at 73 spots across the capital. Other junctions in Southwark include Kennington Park

Junior Roadwatch sessions with TfL and the police took place across the capital as part of Brake’s Road Safety Week Road with Braganza Street and New Kent Road with Harper Road.

“Collisions occur more in central London than elsewhere in London and it is also where higher numbers of people are walking, cycling and riding motorcycles,” said TfL, explaining why it is carrying out the move.

“This creates a high-risk road environment. Lower speeds will reduce the danger.”

Southwark Council welcomed the change, urging the body to “accelerate this important road safety [measure] on

the rest its roads.”

TfL is also planning to reduce the speed limit on a further 140km of roads it operates in inner and outer London by 2024.

Concerns were raised by respondents during the consultation that the lower speed limit would lengthen journey times, and cause more pollution and congestion on busy inner-city London routes.

However TfL responded that while some off-peak journeys might see a small increase in times, most would not

County lines drug dealers jailed

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A county lines drug dealer from Camberwell has been jailed for running the operation between London and Kent.

Oludewa Okorosobo, aged 25, from Flaxman Road, was handed three years and four months in prison at the Old Bailey on Friday 22, November, for supplying Class A and B drugs; heroin, crack cocaine and cannabis.

Also sentenced was Seif Khalid Hashim, aged 20, from Dirleton Road in West Ham, who was given two years and six months at an earlier hearing on Monday, October 21.

They are both subject to a Criminal Behaviour Order for five years which restricts them from being in a public place together, stops them from entering part of Kent, and prevents them from having more than two SIM cards registered in their name.

Both were arrested after Okorosobo’s car was stopped in Denmark Hill in the morning of Thursday, February 28, by the Met’s violent crime task force.

Officers suspected Okorosobo was running drugs from London to Kent on a phone line nicknamed “Freddie”.

Another mobile was later found to be running a network named “Sam”.

Met detectives assisted by Kent police raided his address and found a pack of heroin. At Hashim’s home they uncovered six packs of heroin and cocaine. The drugs had a total street value of £3,460.

Both pleaded guilty to the charges.

The investigating officer, Detective Constable Ray Sekalongo, said: “The phones had been used to send hundreds of messages at a time, advertising the availability of drugs to potential buyers from October 2017.

“The men used coded language in many of the messages, which we were able to decipher to prove what they were doing.

“County lines activity has far-reaching consequences for communities.

“Violence, child trafficking and, of course, drug addiction are all linked to these toxic networks.

“By putting Okorosobo and Hasim before the courts, we have ensured that there are two fewer people bringing this kind of misery of Kent.

“The Met is working hard with the National Crime Agency and police forces across the country to make the UK a hostile place for county lines gangs to operate in.”

It added that research from Imperial College London showed a 20mph speed limit had no negative net impact on exhaust emissions.

Tunnel fines are stepped up

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk TfL is stepping up fines against repeat offenders at Rotherhithe Tunnel after imposing weight and height restrictions on drivers over one year ago and installing cameras since February.

The new cameras at the Rotherhithe Tunnel are to enforce fines of up to £130.

The cameras have been checking that vehicles comply with a ban on goods vehicles weighing over two tonnes or cars higher than two metres using the tunnel.

However traffic bosses have said that for the first two weeks, they simply sent letters to drivers caught breaking the rules rather than issuing fines. TfL then said it ‘used its discretion to limit prohibited vehicles to one fine per day.’

But now from Monday (December 2) any drivers caught will receive a fine for each journey through the tunnel.

TfL warned that the tunnel, built in 1908, was not designed to cope with modern levels of traffic – and drivers breaking the restrictions were “putting themselves and others at risk.”

The agency had previously said it had turned away an average of 600 vehicles a day from using the tunnel

since the restrictions were introduced in September 2018. They are now working on proposals physically to stop vehicles higher than two metres entering the tunnel.

Glynn Barton, TfL’s Director of Augmentin Management, said: “These restrictions are absolutely essential to ensure that people can continue to use the tunnel safely. People driving vehicles through the tunnel that do not meet the restrictions are putting both themselves and others at risk.”

Cars that are not allowed to use the Rotherhithe Tunnel should cross the river at Tower Bridge or the Blackwall Tunnel, added TfL. The restrictions have proved controversial since they were introduced.

One mother told the News that the restrictions added “literally hours” onto journeys for a specially-adapted minibus which takes her disabled daughter toand-from school.

However, TfL has insisted that the changes were necessary to ensure that people could use the tunnel safely. It will set out plans for the future of the tunnel next autumn as part of its annual Business Plan on how it intends to finance continuous repairs needed. to the structure.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Scenes from south London, including Blackfriars Settlement and Ebony Horse Club, are captured in a new photography exhibition on display at the Southbank Centre.

London Is Love, shot by RussianGhanaian artist Liz Johnson, showcases communities and much-loved places in Southwark and Lambeth.

Her images will be displayed across the Royal Festival Hall's windows and Queen Elizabeth Hall, including rolling projections across the iconic buildings' façade, from December 6.

Johnson has lived in London since 1991, and her first solo show opened at the South London Gallery earlier this year.

smallest baby turns one

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The smallest baby in the UK to receive life-support treatment celebrated her first birthday this month.

Reva Malvankar was born premature at just 30 weeks last year and in her first few weeks developed an infection that had her hospitalised.

After six days in intensive care at St George’s Hospital with her condition deteriorating she was sent to Evelina

London for last-chance treatment to save her.

At the children’s hospital she was cared for by the specialist Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation team.

This type of treatment temporarily replaces the work of the lungs or heart, allowing the organs to heal.

It continuously takes blood from the body, adds oxygen, removes carbon dioxide and then returns it to the body.

The procedures carries higher risks for smaller babies, and had never been attempted on a baby as small as Reva

before in the country.

When she arrived at Evelina, Reva weighed just 4lb.

Her mum, 42-year-old Parnika Bhor, from Surrey, said: “Reva didn’t have any serious medical problems and after spending six weeks in the neonatal ward at our local hospital we were discharged home.

“After three weeks at home she developed a respiratory infection. At first she didn’t seem to be in any major discomfort but her temperature was very low.

“She then started to become very floppy so we took her to our local A&E. Her condition continued to deteriorate so after a couple of hours she was transferred to St George’s Hospital.

“She spent six days there but there was no change to her condition.

“We were told that the respiratory infection was stopping her lungs from working properly and her life was in serious danger. We couldn’t bear the thought of losing Reva. We were completely broken.

“The team at Evelina London explained that Reva would need a special type of ECMO because of her small weight and that it was her only option left. It was extremely distressing seeing her tiny body hooked up to such a big machine.

“After ten days on ECMO her condition started to improve. Gradually the team reduced the amount of support her lungs were getting from the machine.

Reva wouldn’t be alive today without it.

“I’m eternally grateful to Evelina London for the care she received.”

The trust is appealing for donations of new clothes, books, toys and toiletries to support families who use its services, many of whom find the festive season a particularly challenging period, and may be struggling financially.

Lucy Brazener, the trust’s adult mental health child safeguarding manager, said: “Christmas can be a challenging time for families, especially those who might be on a low income.

“We know donations can make a genuine difference to families who are

struggling this year.”

Any donations should be sent to the hospital’s main reception, at Denmark Hill, by December 17.

They must be unwrapped so that staff can identify which are most appropriate for each patient.

They request no alcohol, choking hazards, sharp objects or toys with batteries.

Nuala Conlon, involvement and participation lead for psychological medicine and older adults, said: “The festive period can be a particularly gloomy time of year for some of our patients and service users and we know these gifts will really have a positive impact on the people we care for.”

kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Thousands of people each year attend the Christmas memorial service at Bermondsey funeral director’s Albins - and this year’s is extra special as it’s their 20th anniversary.

Taking place next Wednesday, December 4th, it gives locals a chance to remember lost loved ones as the festive period approaches.

People are invited to write personal messages that will then be hung on a massive Christmas Tree in the garden. You can visit the funeral office at 52 Culling Road, Rotherhithe, London, SE16 2TN from now until the service to write your message.

The service includes carol singing, video displays of Albins’ work in Afghanistan and elsewhere overseas, the release of doves, a fireworks display and prayer.

As always Simon and Jon Dyer alongside their staff invite all those who attend to stay for mince pies, soup and mulled wine.

This is the 20th annual memorial service, which was established by the late Barry Albin-Dyer after

getting the garden built in 1999.

Jon Dyer told the News: “The memorial garden meant so much to our dad. It means as much to us and always will. It is a place for people to come together and remember those they have lost at Christmas, which is a time for the family.”

Tackling the invisible killer

L

ast year, I hopped on the Victoria line to see for myself how Waltham Forest Council has cut traffic by an extraordinary 56% in its ‘Mini-Holland’ scheme.

People are driving less for short journeys. Children feel safe to walk or scoot to school. It’s easier to shop locally and high streets are flourishing.

Reducing traffic is good for many reasons. One of the most urgent is tackling air pollution.

We now know that toxic gases and tiny particles from exhaust fumes, brakes and tyres damage every system in the body, including heart, lungs and brain.

And yet in Southwark we all have to

breathe dangerously polluted air every day.

Air pollution from transport is unfair: in general, the people who suffer most are not the ones causing the problem.

People on lower incomes are least likely to own a car and most likely to live on heavily polluted streets.

Surprisingly, it’s often more polluted inside a car driving in traffic than outside on the street – exhaust fumes become trapped inside the car.

So people who drive for a living are at higher risk, along with children who are regularly driven to school.

Car-owning parents may joke about being forced to act as ‘chauffeurs’, but research shows that given the choice, most young people prefer to walk or cycle.

To reduce traffic, lots of changes need to happen at the same time, including safer crossings, protected cycle lanes and deliveries by cargo bikes instead of diesel vans.

We can redesign things so drivers feel like guests in our streets instead of kings of the road. The current Southwark Council proposals for ‘Healthy Streets’ in Dulwich, Walworth and Bermondsey are part of this jigsaw of solutions.

Dual crossword Why is there a twenty year target for 20mph limit?

R

oad safety has improved dramatically over the decades. It is almost hard to believe now that in the not-too-distant-past drink driving was socially acceptable and the speed camera roll-out was controversial.

We’ve been told for a long time that “twenty is plenty” and that driving at lower speeds makes the likelihood of survival in a collision much higher.

It is important to see traffic deaths and injuries as not an unavoidable consequence of our reliance on cars. It is in our power to prevent them.

But the target to eradicate road deaths and serious injuries by 2041 in London is hardly ambitious when our entire economy and industry is meant to going carbon neutral within a decade – depending on which politicians you speak to.

Why do we have to wait another twenty years? What on earth takes two decades to fix?

Changes to road layouts and speed limits are well overdue, but will only work if there is a crackdown on dangerous driving and car thefts.

Many crimes are committed in stolen, uninsured vehicles that are more or less untraceable, so we need strong policing too if we are to have zero deaths on the roads.

And we need to make sure ALL road users know what they’re doing. Some cyclists run red lights, travel at speed, or simply don’t have the road skills they need to be stay safe. This must change.

In the meantime, no one should begrudge the speed limits and, given how slow moving traffic is through most of central London, it’s doubtful many road users will notice the difference anway.

Animal rescue charities are there to help you

T

he five kittens found alone and without their mum in Burgess Park are lucky to have all the love and care they need from the team at Battersea until they are ready to move into their forever homes.

You never know what chain of events has led to an animal being abandoned. It’s easy to judge but it’s really important people feel they can be honest and say they need help if they’re not coping.

Battersea and other animal rescue charities are there to help and can often help make sure your pet is neutered so you don’t have to worry about any surprises.

If only everyone would take their advice.

Christmas in the Blue Hospital’s HIV tests for all bermondsey

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals offered routine HIV testing to all patients getting blood tests as part of last week’s National HIV Testing Week.

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk This Sunday the Blue Market Square in Bermondsey will be transformed into a winter wonderland with a giant snow globe, snowboard challenge and Rodeo Reindeer.

The event organised by the Blue Bermondsey BID is held each year to encourage more people to the area on Southwark Park Road.

The BID is a network of local businesses in the area. The day before, on Saturday November 30, from 11am to 6pm they are hosting a Blue Latino Market with stalls

featuring Latin cuisine and crafts.

The Blue Christmas event will also feature a circus workshops, Frog Morris’ Family Zone, stilt-walking, face painting, juggling, good old fashion Hula-Hooping and of course a Santa Grotto with his loyal Elf. Local makers and crafters will set up stalls selling handmade products and the girls of Carragher Academy of Irish Dancing will be displaying their skills with DJ Kevin ‘Sagey’ Sage keeping it all together with sing-along Christmas anthems.

This is the first time the hospitals have offered the tests to all patients getting blood tests on site or at any Southwark and Lambeth GPs. While taking the test, patients are also given information about HIV prevention, testing and treatment.

Southwark and Lambeth have some of the highest HIV diagnoses rates in the whole of the UK, at 1.2 per cent and 1.4 per cent.

But many people do not realise they are living with the condition.

If diagnosed early and treated, people with HIV can live a nearnormal lifespan.

Antiretroviral treatment stops the virus replicating in the body, which means the immune system can then repair itself and prevent further damage.

Doctors aim to get patients to a point where they have an undetectable viral load.

This is the first time tests were offered to all patients or at any local GP surgery body is low enough not to be detected by a test - known as viral suppression.

Those who sustain an undetectable viral load cannot pass HIV to their sexual partners, and it also reduces the likelihood of mother to child transmission.

Dr Emma Wallis, an HIV specialist registrar at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “Routine HIV testing in outpatients and GP surgeries is a fantastic opportunity to test people who may not have had a chance to test already.

“People can live for many years unaware they are infected, and testing regularly is very important so we can diagnose HIV early and offer access to lifesaving treatment.

“Also, routine testing is a great way to combat misinformation and stigma surrounding HIV. “We have come a long way from the tombstone AIDs adverts people remember from the 1980s.

“There has been huge advances in HIV care, for example people living with HIV on effective treatment cannot pass on HIV and if diagnosed early have a normal life expectancy.

“Although virally supressed patients cannot pass on HIV, condoms are good at stopping many other sexually transmitted infections and reduce the risk of falling pregnant.”

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk South London actor Kellie Shirley has been nominated for Anthony Nolan’s Celebrity Supporter of the Year Award 2019 after donating her twins’ umbilical cord to the blood cancer charity.

The actor from Croydon, best known for her six-years as Carly Wicks on Eastenders, and as Kirsty De La Croix in The Long Run, donated her children’s cord blood after their birth in 2015.

Umbilical cord blood is rich in stem cells which can be used in transplants for people with blood cancer and blood disorders. Mothers can donate their cord blood in King’s College Hospital in

Denmark Hill.

Kellie has continued to champion the charity and raise awareness for the importance of joining Anthony Nolan’s register.

“I feel honoured as always- I love this charity and am inspired daily by people associated with it- spreading the word and fighting blood cancer together,” she said. “I have been working alongside the charity for over a decade after running the marathon for them in 2008.

“Over the eleven years, I’ve met so many inspirational people that it meant in 2015 we donated our twins’ cord blood to give someone a second chance of life.

“Without Anthony Nolan, thousands of people wouldn’t have had a second chance. Please, please sign up to the register- you can potentially save someone’s life too!”

The winners will be announced at a ceremony today (Thursday, November 28), at the Tower of London.

Guy’s Hospital’s awareness month highlights it is not just smokers at risk

An ex-NFL player who set up a lung cancer charity after the death of his 38-year-old wife has visited Guy’s Hospital to help raise awareness that the disease doesn’t just affect smokers.

Chris Draft, who who played for the San Fransico 49ers and the Atlanta Falcons, visited Guy’s Cancer Centre last week.

He founded the charity Team Draft after the death of his 38-year-old wife Keasha, who had never smoked.

Team Draft is dedicated to raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of lung cancer, and highlighting the

misconception that it is only a “smokers’ disease”.

His visit, which included meeting patients, coincided with Lung Cancer Awareness Month, held in November.

He said: “It’s great to get people to stop smoking. It’s great that we have cleaner air and it’s great that we improve environmental areas and spaces. But we do need earlier detection, better research and focus on survivorship and this is a new message.

“There is a darkness around this disease. The darkness is the lack of information and knowledge that comes with understanding that the campaign of prevention is not enough.”

Rachel Thomas, a lung cancer clinical nurse specialist at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “One of the major issues is that the public perception is that you only get lung cancer if you smoke but actually 10-15 per cent of patients

will have never smoked in their life and be very young.

“In the field of lung cancer, treatment has massively improved.

“Lung cancer carries huge stigma which needs to be broken down and the public need to know about this huge risk to health.

“We need to tell people the signs and symptoms of lung cancer so if people are concerned they then ask their GP for an X-ray.”

Thirty-one-year-old Faye Wrotchford, from Lewisham, (pictured with Chris Draft) was one of the patients to meet Chris. A nonsmoker, she was diagnosed at 28 after experiencing back pain and a stubborn cough. She said of her diagnosis: “I don’t blame my GP at all because who would think a 28-year-old would have lung cancer?

“I was training to be a midwife and working in a bar in the evening so I thought the back pain was to do with twisting and lifting.

“It was wonderful to have Chris here

today. He is very compelling and we have learnt a lot and it means that our voices are getting heard.

“I’m very lucky to be part of this today and hopefully I can go away and do my little bit, so people around me can start to learn the signs and symptoms of lung cancer.

“Hopefully they go on to say: ‘My friend Faye was 28 when she was diagnosed with lung cancer and she was never a smoker.’ That’s how you get the message to spread.”

Which seven council estates are in line for extra cash?

As part of its new Great Estates scheme, 388 proposals designed by residents were submitted for improvements to estates across the borough - what the local authority described as an “overwhelming” response.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Rotherhithe’s Pilgrim Statue is back to its former glory in time for next year’s 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s voyage to America.

The statue, tucked away in a corner

by Cumberland Wharf on the Thames Path, is one of Rotherhithe’s hidden gems.

It depicts a docklands lad reading a comic filled with pictures of America; railroads, skyscrapers, spacecraft, cowboys and Mickey Mouse.

Behind him, looking over his shoulder, is the ghost of a pilgrim, amazed at what has become of the New World since landing on its shores from the Mayflower shop in 1620.

The statue, created by south London artist Peter McLean, was commissioned in 1991 as part of the Docklands redevelopment scheme.

But over the years it had lost its shine with its information board becoming illegible and its lamp post losing its lamp.

Resident Sheila Taylor, who has lived in Rotherhithe for 20 years, said walking past the statue and seeing its sorry condition upset her so much she appealed for the council to help.

In 2017, a new information board was put in place and, last Saturday, the sculptor and around 50 residents applauded as a new lamp was switched on for the first time by Mike Tobin OBE, an entrepreneur and philanthropist.

“The celebration concluded with everyone singing John Bunyan’s pilgrim hymn He Who Would Valiant Be,” Sheila told the News.

“So the statue is now back to its original state - just in time for the Mayflower 400 anniversary in 2020!”

The proposals include replanting and gardening projects, painting and redecorating, plans to reduce antisocial behaviour, better storage for buggies and bikes and refuse and recycling, and new artworks.

Councillor Leo Pollock, cabinet member for social regeneration, great estates and new council homes, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that residents took the time to submit their proposals, there was a huge variety of suggestions and what we received proved to me how deeply people care about where they live, and that small improvements can drastically improve their quality of life.

“It was a tough selection process and all the ideas had great merit. We’re now at a point where we have a selection of estates across the borough to test the feasibility of the proposals and we look forward to working with residents to make what they asked for happen.”

It is expected that the fully-costed plans will be published in early spring 2020.

Man dies after falling from a Peckham building

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A man has died after falling from a building in Peckham on Monday night.

Police said they were called to the junction of Hanover Park and Clayton Road by paramedics, shortly before 8pm on Monday, November 18 after reports had been made concerning the person’s safety. Officers found a man, of around 30 years of age, with serious injuries. Despite the efforts of medics, he was pronounced dead at 8.20pm.

Officers believe he sustained his injuries falling from a height. They are currently treating the death as nonsuspicious.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The charity has already joined with Link Age Southwark, who held one of its regular volunteer induction days at the Old Grammar last Saturday.

Magic is certainly the word at The Bridge with this production: it is breathtaking and I seriously recommend you put this paper down and go straight out now and buy your tickets. Go on, I mean it.

Forget Pantomime, that's old school. This is something else.

Here is Narnia, where its mythical beings swing through the air on trapeze or pop up out of the floor.

Where Santa Claus shimmies in and does a clog dance to a folk tune. Mr Tumnus is here; an old friend in his scarf complete with umbrella beneath the snowy lamppost.

There is the evil, ice-sparkling witch, rising terrifyingly through the air, screaming and incanting unintelligible sorcery - and her very disturbing familiars who slay Aslan, the beautiful and noble lion, before his joyous rebirth.

There is song, dance, ballet, puppetry. There are sequins. And colours, so many colours. There is silken snow, drifting quietly above your head. There is lightning in flashing hues; birds singing; flowers blooming. The music is supplied both by specially-composed recording and a live quartet who live beneath a mountain. There is laughter - and tears, mark my words.

Every single person involved in this spectacular production deserves a gold, nay platinum, medal. It is truly fantastic. The puppetry is top notch

and so, so believable. Schrödinger the cat is mesmerising and has a deeper, more significant meaning than you think.

I took along my friend Jane Deakin, the celebrated Rotherhithe artist, who gave me this quote by Kahlil Gibran, which really does sum it all up: "Let me oh let me bathe my soul in colours, let me swallow the sunset and drink the rainbow". Quite.

It is the best thing I've seen in years.

It is a sin to not see God Zoe Lyons is God. Literally. Zoe Lyons is literally playing God in the upcoming production of An Act of God, but while in the guise of a mere mortal she spoke to the News about her peripatetic life before becoming God, writes Michael Holland...

First off was a bit of background about a childhood spent living all over the British Isles: ‘I was born in Wales but we left there when I was only six months old and moved to Ireland where my Dad is originally from. We lived there until I was ten before moving to Epsom, and a few years later we ended up in Glasgow.

So I feel I have had a bit of everything growing up. Probably explains why I am quite good at accents.’

Being a child and having to continually make new friends in different places, it appears that Zoe forged an early comedy routine to achieve this, saying, ‘I always knew I could make people laugh since I was quite young at school, and wanted to try stand up all through my early 20s.’

However, getting an education was paramount so Zoe went to university to study psychology, adding ‘but

actually spent most of my time there doing plays with the drama society.’

The bug had obviously bitten because after graduating Zoe went to drama school in London, which was followed by thinking about doing stand up and ‘many years of trying to get acting work.’ Eventually life reached the point where ‘the thought of not trying stand up became more frightening than actually doing it’, so aged 29 Zoe performed her first gig.

Since that auspicious debut Zoe has won a Best Joke at Fringe award, and another for Funny Women. She enjoys the writing as much as the actual performance and says, ‘there is no greater feeling than making an audience laugh, it gives me a total rush. But on occasion, if I am writing something, I will think of a line or a gag and the sense of satisfaction can be just as rewarding. In fact, if I write a cracking line I will take the rest of the day or week off !’

Because she trained as an actor, Zoe doesn’t mind performing other people’s words, which means she can be found playing the lead in David Javerbaum’s An Act of God. ‘Quite simply,’ she begins, ‘if someone asks you if you would like to be God for

Christmas it’s pretty hard to turn that offer down… I think once you have been cast as The Almighty there is no going back.’

This Broadway hit is making its European premiere and the writer has made a few changes to adapt it for a London audience. Zoe reveals, ‘He has been great at letting us play a part in changing certain things in the script. It has been a fun collaboration.’

I wanted to know if the nuns that taught her in Ireland would enjoy this play: ‘I am quite sure they would enjoy it. They might have to wrap their habits a little more tightly around their ears in places as there is a small amount of “language” that, if I had used as a child, would have got me sent to the Mother Superior’s office.’

Giving Ms Lyons the last word she had this to say: ‘It would be a sin to miss this show; seriously, a sin.’

Travelling the world with a circus must be up there with the best of jobs. Nyron elaborates: ‘The best part of this job is working with some of the most talented people I've ever met. These artists and crew members come from all over the world, do not speak the same first language and have different cultures ,but we all get on so well and have so much respect for each other…

Everybody loves to share their skills with each other and every show is so enjoyable and enthralling because the level of danger is insane.’

And if that isn’t enough reason for people to book tickets, the puppet master adds: ‘For all those thinking to come to see this show, I can only say if you miss out on this opportunity you will be kicking yourself for a long time. From Jonathan Creek to War Horse

However, via quite a magical route Nyron can be found working the head of Queenie the elephant in Circus 1903.

That journey began with Nyron’s other passion as a young man dance: ‘I never thought I would be good enough to dance professionally,’ he begins, ‘but that was not the case, and through pursuing dance I learned many skills along the way, including parkour (freerunning), gymnastics, climbing and, of course, puppetry when I was selected as a War Horse puppeteer at the New London Theatre.’

That show went on to be a magnificent success worldwide, which would look good on any CV, so when an audition was posted for an international tour with Circus 1903, Nyron applied. ‘I felt that even though I only have one puppet credit to my name, I had talent that would complement the circus show, having worked stilts before and my other skills learned on musicals such as Fela!, South Pacific and Guys and Dolls, and plays like War Horse and Around the World in 80 Days.’

wren marvel in a sydenham cul-de-sac

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A Christopher Wren church spire that has survived nearly 200 years in Sydenham after being rescued by a Bermondsey printer has been lovingly restored in its cul-de-sac home.

The spire, which reached 154 feet at its tip, originally adorned the rebuilt St Antholin’s Church in the City.

It was one of 51 churches celebrated architect Wren designed after the Great Fire gutted London in 1666.

The church was known as one of Wren’s finest, with a polygonal design and detailed scallop shell carvings.

It is believed a church has been on the site on Budge Row for nearly a thousand years. The location is significant as it straddles the Roman road Watling Street, a trade route connecting London with the south-east and Kentish coast.

The church also developed a reputation as the “grand nursery of puritanism” in the 1600s, with regular 5am lectures during the reign of Elizabeth I. In 1829 a section of the spire was damaged by a storm. The structure was rescued and bought for the sum of five pounds by one of the churchwardens; a Mr Robert Harrild.

Harrild was a Bermondsey boy born in 1780 who had amassed a fortune by developing a new form of printing machinery that used rollers, rather than leather balls, to apply ink.

This pioneering technology led to a newspaper boom and, by the 1820s Harrild & Sons technology was used by most of Fleet Street.

His printing press was based in Farringdon, now the Harrild & Sons pub, close to the church on Budge Row. By now a very wealthy man, Harrild had bought a large manor house in Sydenham, called Round Hill House, in a spot that was at that time little more than a common and a few houses.

It really is a thing of beauty with a wonderful story, and it’s a great chance for people to get up close to a unique piece of British architecture He set about transporting the spire to be erected on a plinth in his garden; where it was duly carried home by horse and cart.

Harrild died in 1853. During his lifetime he was a generous benefactor to the people of Sydenham, which gradually developed into a suburb, one of its parish Poor Law guardians, and profoundly religious.

By the 1930s his former home had become the Sydenham and Forest Hill Social Club. Run down, it was demolished in the 1960s and replaced with housing in a new cul-de-sac off Round Hill.

Incredibly, throughout the last centuries, the spire is still standing on the same site in the centre of the homes, next to a large cedar tree – also a survivor from Harrild’s garden.

St Antholin’s church was finally

demolished in 1875 to make way for the new Queen Victoria Street.

In another Southwark connection, some of the proceeds of its sale helped pay for a St Antholin’s Church in Nunhead to be built – later an architectural casualty of the Blitz.

The Nunhead church was rebuilt as St Anthony and St Silas, in 1957. It contains the only surviving piece of the original Wren structure in the City; the reredos, or altarpiece.

A recent survey found the spire was structurally sound but its weathervane was unstable and corroded in places.

Residents had become worried for its future.

This year, the Heritage of London Trust launched a restoration project with support from L&Q and the London Stone Conservation, whose stonemasons are repairing the spire.

Mike and Miriam Kent, who live in Round Hill, said: “The spire is directly opposite our house and people passing our house often ask about it. We’re so delighted it’s being renovated.”

The project is due to finish at the end of this month, and while work is taking place the trust has been teaching local children all about the history of the spire and Sydenham’s past.

So far, youngsters from Holy Trinity School in Forest Hill, and Sydenham School, have visited the monument to learn all about the Great Fire, Sir Christopher Wren, and the philanthropist Robert Harrild.

Dr Nicola Stacey, Heritage of London’s director, said: “It really is a thing of beauty with a wonderful story, and it’s a great chance for people to get up close to a unique piece of British architecture.”

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable works

by Thames Water, BT, Trident Lifting Services, Centurion Site Services, it intends to make an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named road.

Whilst the works are in progress, or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in: (a) Costa Street, between No’s 23 Costa Street and Mcdermott Road. (b) Friern Road, northbound lane of carriageway, at it’s junction with Lordship Lane. (c) Meeting House Lane, at it’s junction with Goldsmith Road. (d) Tanner Street, between Druid Street and Maltby Street.

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FISHER HAVE gone to the dogs – as they host a special day for our canine friends next month.

It will be ‘Non League Dogs Day’ when the Fish host Erith & Belvedere at St Paul’s on Saturday, December 7.

There will be a range of treats in store for four-legged supporters including snacks on arrival, an interspecies team photo with the Fisher players after the full-time whistle, and the chance to win big in a half-time raffle.

The team behind the @ nonleaguedogs Twitter and Instagram accounts will be coming to the game as special guests. Their humorous photos of dogs at nonleague matches have garnered a following of 20,000 people, and were the inspiration behind the day.

Organiser Andy Lloyd-Williams said: “We are very excited to be putting on this event especially for dogs (and their owners). I first stumbled upon Fisher when I got a puppy and didn’t want to let it stop me from going to watch a decent game of football.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DANNY MILLS and David Ijaha were on target in either half as Dulwich Hamlet progressed o the first round of the Buildbase FA Trophy after a 2-1 replay win over Chippenham Town in the third qualifying round.

But Dulwich didn’t have to wait long more for what turned out to be the winner. Ijaha won possession on the left touchline before finding Dominic Vose. Chippenham went direct as they searched for another equaliser, but Dulwich resiliently rebuffed the hosts’ effort, with Edwards troubled only once, in the 86th minute when he pushed away a dangerous cross.

Dulwich will face Hornchurch in the first round.

The Hamlet are back in National League South action this Saturday.

They travel to Oxford City aiming for a first league win since August as they try to improve on their nineteenthplace position in the table.

Mecca Maxime-Samuels, Stanley Sammland, Nahshon Bedeau-Francis and Issa Sulaiyman-Matthews were also on target.

Coach Charlie Pearce said: “Although the team managed to get the goals they needed to win the game, they were unable to play the way they know they can with the silky passing not being with the team.

“They did all they could to get their passing going but were unable to find

their rhythm. Big congratulations to Stanley Sammland who picked up the man-of-the-match award as he was forever trying to get the team into their passing stride. He was also rewarded with a goal, so well done to Stanley.

“Take nothing away from Dulwich Village Orange. They were the better footballing team and made it rather nervy towards the end by scoring two goals of their own.

“Even though the team wasn’t at their best they still found a way to will, so well done to the boys. They now put this game behind them and focus all their energy on the next game which sees the team travel to a tough opponent in Elite Development in the London Cup third round.”

Gavin Rose brought Ijaha and Nyren Clunis back into his side after the 2-2 draw at the weekend, with Ben Chapman and Lewis White dropping to the bench.

The Hamlet were ahead in just the second minute. Nathan Smith crossed from the left touchline and Mills nipped in front of goalkeeper Will Puddy to head into the empty goal.

It was a scrappy contest and Christian Smith had a chance to double the lead but headed Lionel Ainsworth’s corner just wide. Puddy almost gifted the visitors a second when his clearance

went straight to Ben Dempsey 40 yards out, but the goalkeeper got back to save the attempted lob.

The hosts were level in the 21dt minute. After Richard Orlu gave away a foul, Dulwich stopper Charlie Grainger could only palm the ball out to Curtis McDonald who applied the finish.

Mills tested Puddy with another header before the home side had an effort disallowed.

Grainger was a half-time casualty as Preston Edwards came on in goal.

Edwards had a relatively comfortable second half as Dulwich gained control of the game.

The away side had the chance to go ahead again in the 50th minute but Ainsworth struck the outside of the post before Mills headed another cross wide.

Entry to this Southern Counties East League Premier Division fixture is £8 adults and £5 concessions, with dogs and under-16s going free.

There were some stand-out swims, with a slew of personal bests, twelve new county qualification times achieved and a new club record set by Kaltrina Kurati for the 100m butterfly.

The star of the show was Millie Ung, who as well as bagging a clutch of medals also took home the prized Top Gun trophy in the ten-year-old girls category.

It marks an excellent start to the new season for Southwark Aquatics, which has also expanded to launch a new Academy Squad for swimmers

aged eight and above who have achieved at least Stage 6 swimming.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JED WALLACE scored his seventh goal of the season as Millwall won away before Christmas in a league campaign for the first time since November 2016.

Wallace curled home a superb 65thminute free-kick from 20 yards after he had been fouled by Mike van der Hoorn.

It was no more than Millwall deserved after they had created the better chances in their best away performance of the season.

Boss Gary Rowett had wanted to change his side’s “mentality”, to give them “something else to think about” and the Lions spent the international break working on a 5-3-2 formation that worked a treat.

Shaun Hutchinson and Jake Cooper, either side of club skipper Alex Pearce, were well-protected by wing-backs Mahlon Romeo and Murray Wallace.

Romeo is probably a natural wing-back and has played there before. Wallace has played most of his career as a centreback so it is to his credit he performed with such competency. He was up against tricky winger Nathan Dyer – a Premier League title winner with Leicester in 2015-16 – who rarely got the better of him and was withdrawn in the 70th minute.

Millwall could have gone in front in the first half through the recalled Connor Mahoney and Jed Wallace.

Mahoney saw an early shot in the box blocked before he weaved in from the right and fired to the near post where goalkeeper Freddie Woodman saved his effort. Wallace blazed the loose ball over.

Millwall were almost authors of their own downfall in the second half when Ben Thompson lost possession on the edge of his own box but Bart Bialkowski saved Kristoffer Peterson’s low effort.

The Lions’ made the breakthrough when Wallace chased a lost cause and van der Hoorn took him down.

It seemed unnecessary as Woodman always looked like he would reach the ball first. Wallace curled his free-kick into goalkeeper’s top left corner.

Swansea had a glorious late chance and the crowd were on their feet ready to celebrate when Borja Baston lifted the ball over Bialkowski, but it went just wide.

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JON DADI Bodvarsson has admitted Millwall “took the easy choices” earlier this season – but now believes the Lions should be looking to a top-six challenge.

Bodvarsson felt the side didn’t vary their play enough in the opening months of the campaign but are now getting a handle on Gary Rowett’s methods.

Bodvarsson admitted the departure of Neil Harris, who had signed him, led to some uncertainty.

“It’s always an uncomfortable thing to happen because one of the main reasons why I signed here was because the manager really, really wanted me,” Bodvarsson said. “When you hear that then you know you have the trust of the manager and he knows what I can do.

“It gives you confidence going forward so it was a bit of a shock when he left early doors. Obviously you’re

contemplating who the next manager is going to be, what he wants, what type of players he wants.

“Thankfully it’s been alright with the new manager here. I feel confident, comfortable and relaxed.

“It isn’t a crazy amount of change.

We needed to have a bit more belief in ourselves as players because early doors I think we took the easy choices sometimes instead of mixing it up a bit and playing with the ball and having more possession.

“Long balls and direct play is okay as well as long as you mix it up. I feel the players are getting the hang of that more and more. It’s not just one way of football, you have more than one choice. The gaffer is helping us get better and better at it on the training ground.

“It’s been a huge improvement since he came. One of the first things he said was that he was very excited to be working with the squad and coach us.

That gave the lads confidence. When Neil leaves it wasn’t as if we were doing anything wrong, but when [Rowett] says that then we have that confidence.

“I feel the team is really, really good, individually we have really brilliant players and collectively it’s getting better. Hopefully there are positive things ahead.”

Millwall’s player of the season so far is arguably Jed Wallace, and Bodvarsson revealed his admiration for a player he had known before.

Bodvarsson said: “Not only on the field but off the field he’s brilliant as well. I played with him at Wolves and I could see he was a brilliant player.

Both times I arrived, to Wolves and to here, he made me feel at ease. He helps players out and he’s a leader as well.

“You need that in a team. He steps up in big games and gives us goals out of nothing. It’s special having those types of players because it helps you a lot.”

Rowett has shown faith in Bodvarsson so far in an attacking department with plenty of options. Bodvarsson thinks that’s good for the club.

“It drives you, you need that,” he said. “Bradders [Tom Bradshaw] has been brilliant with his goal-scoring.

“I know there’s competition but we’re all together in this. We talk to each other all the time. Some games are different and need different types of players. It’s a positive and I’m happy with the challenge.”

Bodvarsson isn’t ruling out Millwall challenge for the top six.

“I don’t think it’s too ambitious,” he said, “if anything you need that mindset, to strive for greatness. It’s a small club and maybe the mentality the last couple of years has been just to stay in the league.

“But I feel with the confidence we have right now we should be looking up, not down.”

The 26-year-old goalkeeper has been without a club since he was released by Millwall in the summer.

Former Tottenham stopper Archer has trained with Aston Villa, Southend and Middlesbrough.

The Hammers are struggling in the Premier League and their goalkeeper Roberto has been ridiculed after several poor performances. They have conceded 23 goals in thirteen league games. Łukasz Fabiański is injured and former Lions No.1 Dave Martin is the current back-up. There is even speculation Martin, 33, could come into the side at Chelsea on Saturday.

Archer made 166 appearances in all competitions after joining from Spurs in 2015. He fell out of favour last season and had his attitude questioned by former Lions boss Neil Harris. Now he could be set for a surprise move.

Lions skipper Pearce played under Rowett at Derby, when the Rams reached the Championship play-off semi-finals in 2017-18.

“I was really pleased, it was fantastic,” Pearce said of Rowett’s arrival. “He’s a proven Championship manager so for a club like Millwall to get him I think is a fantastic appointment.

“He’s been in this league for quite some time and can bring that experience to us. He can bring that tactical awareness to us and each game we prepare for he can help us to try to get a positive result.

It’s been good so far.

“Sometimes when a manager comes in and gets clean sheets it looks like we’ve only been working on the defensive side of it, which we have been, but we’ve also worked on keeping the ball a little bit more than we have done.

“Having that little bit more control of games has helped the defensive side of it. We’re trying to have that more control and trying to get key players into key areas further up the pitch, in between lines and in pockets where they can hurt other teams.

“That’s been a really pleasing side of it along with the defensive work, we’ve had some really good sessions.

“He’s a fantastic manager. He’s come in and connected with all the players straightaway. He’s brought in his ideas. He’s given us some key bits of information going into games, which has been vital, and the lads have taken that on board and put his instructions into practice.

“The training has been really good, really intense, and I think the lads have been able to get a good block of work in.

Particularly the lads who haven’t been playing, sometimes it’s more important that they get that strong block of work in so if they do get the chance they’re ready.

“That’s what he brings.”

Young Lions lose derby ISAAC OLAOFE’S brace wasn’t enough as Millwall’s under-23s lost 4-2 at Crystal Palace in their Professional Development League game on Monday.

Brandon Pierrick scored a hat-trick after Oliver Tanner’s opener for Palace. Ryan Sandford denied Connor Wickham from the penalty spot before the second of Pierrick’s goals.

Lions boss Kevin Nugent said: “The game was open and we could have taken more of our chances - it could have finished 5-5.

We had to change our shape here with the personnel we had, which didn’t work in the first 20 minutes so we changed things.

“We dealt with Palace okay at times, but the change in shape maybe affected us performance-wise and the goals were disappointing to concede.

“It was a positive learning curve for them, especially up against Connor Wickham, who at times caused us some real problems.”

New dad Thommo describes ‘whirlwind’ BEN THOMPSON had to make a late dash to Swansea last Saturday morning – after his partner gave birth to a baby boy.

Mason Thompson entered the world on Friday, before new dad Ben got a train to Wales after making sure partner and baby were okay.

“It’s been a whirlwind,” Thompson said. “My missus went into labour on Thursday, and on Friday morning we had the baby. There were a few complications with the birth at first, so it was an emotional rollercoaster, but she and the baby were doing much better

“I’ve been speaking to the lads a lot about it over the past nine months, getting little words of advice and tips here and there. They’ve all been there for me, and they all texted me on Friday.

Pearce said: “He takes a lot of the coaching on a day-to-day basis along with the manager. He’s a really enthusiastic character, really bubbly and bright. He puts on good sessions for the players.

“He’s always there to talk to as well.

You can talk to him, bring up any points, he’s another good person there to be guided by.”

Rowett showed his tactical acumen last weekend by setting the side up in a 5-2-3 formation as Millwall defeated Swansea 1-0, with Pearce in the middle of a back three.

“We worked on it and the gaffer set us up during the week to let us know our jobs. I think it worked out really well,” Pearce said.

“He tinkered with the shape and credit must go to him in terms of changing the formation. I think it gave us a little bit more and freshened things up. It gave us a fresh approach going into an away game where we could try something different.

“It was a really positive performance.

For Mahlon [Romeo] it’s probably a role he’s more suited to than Muzza [Murray Wallace]. So credit to Muzza for how he adapted his game. They were both up against tricky wingers, but especially Muzza up against [Nathan] Dyer. I thought he dealt with him really well.

“When someone’s running at him I’m never thinking, ‘we’re in trouble here’. I always back him to defend that situation one-v-one because he’s so strong and athletic. It’s rare that someone ever gets past him with the ball.

“Mahlon bombs forward and gives us that outlet.”

Behind that defence, Bart Bialkowski has been impressing with some excellent saves. Pearce revealed the players have a nickname for him in training.

Pearce added: “Bart is a fantastic keeper at this level. He has a fantastic pedigree. He will help keep us clean sheets, some of the saves he’s pulled off I’ve been astonished by, to be honest.

“The thing with him is he’s exactly the same in training. The lads call him the ‘session-ruiner’. He will ruin a session because he won’t let any goals in and the lads are like, ‘he’s saved it again’.

“He’s one we certainly want to keep hold of.”

Millwall draw Bolton in cup MILLWALL’S UNDER-18S have been drawn to face Bolton Wanderers away in the FA Youth Cup third round on Wednesday, December 4.

The cup clash will take place at the University of Bolton Stadium, home of The Trotters, who secured passage to round three with a victory over Burton Albion earlier this month.

Tickets to support Chris Perry and Larry McAvoy’s young side will be available on the night. They are priced £3 for adults and £1 concessions.

Millwall went close to pulling off a major shock last year when Billy Mitchell’s thunderbolt put them ahead against Tottenham. The Lions performed superbly and could have added to their lead.

But a Spurs side that included now Ireland senior international Troy Parrott hit back with an equaliser before winning in injury-time.

The December tie against the Trotters will kick off at 7pm.

By John Kelly at The Den johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IT JUST seemed one of those typical Tuesday evenings when Millwall thudded into the ground with a bang to erase any optimism after their first away league win this season the previous Saturday.

Millwall fans can be a fatalistic bunch so there was plenty of dark humour about the prospect of a Wigan side that had yet to win away in the league this campaign doing just that after the Lions’ victory at Swansea at the weekend.

And they would have felt their pessimism was justified when Wigan went ahead in the fourth minute through Anthony Pilkington, who was within a whisker of doubling the lead four minutes later.

It took Millwall a good 20 minutes to really get going. They created a bit of pressure around the opponents’ goal and Shaun Hutchinson headed in Jed Wallace’s corner to level 24 minutes in.

But the Lions didn’t really push on.

Too many moves broke down too easily. Too many players were having an off-night on the ball. It was all just a bit flat, in front of an attendance of only 10,021. Are people looking towards the Christmas period and

maybe thinking their money could be used more wisely – or unwisely – elsewhere? Maybe.

Millwall boss Gary Rowett summed it up accurately. “It was not a great performance, we chugged away, really, huffed and puffed,” he said.

“Sometimes you have to look overall [at his five matches in charge]. There are games we’ve played really well in. We’ve picked up a good amount of points but we’ve had to fight for all of those points.

“We’re certainly not going to be too disappointed with another point in the Championship. It’s another game we haven’t lost. We’ve won some games recently that probably makes that point look a little better.

“We’ve just got to keep chipping away and working hard to get to where we want to be.

“It just shows that we have to be at our maximum, we can’t be anything less than that otherwise we’ll find it hard to win games.”

A return of three wins and a draw from his five games is decent. Wigan threatened to hand Rowett a first home defeat.

The Latics went back in front in the 56th minute when striker Joe Garner helped the ball on to left-back Antonee Robinson who fired a shot under Bart Bialkowski. Rowett revealed afterwards Bialkowski had apologised

for his mistake. Rowett told him he had nothing to apologise for.

Bialkowski would have been a relieved man when his side got their second. Shaun Williams crossed from the left and Matt Smith had to generate all the power to head the ball back across David Marshall into the far corner. It was a superb effort and a fifth of the season for Smith.

“I’ve been really impressed. It’s such a good group and strong group in terms of their competitiveness,” Rowett said. “They work incredibly hard in every session, in every game.

“Sometimes they work so hard it’s difficult to do that all the time. That’s why we want to play with a bit more control at times to conserve that energy to then go and play with a bit more tempo.

Millwall boss Rowett has no Blues grudge

But Rowett isn’t putting limits on what they can achieve.

“Our ambitions are the same: to try and win every game and climb the table,” he said. “We’re

respectful of what we are as a team but sometimes you hear the odd comment around the place about looking at teams below and counting the points.

“We want to change the mentality a little bit to look above and see if we can be a bit more aspirational in that sense. We’re also aware we need to scrap for every point.

“While we’re in a good position at the moment the Championship can change over a week, as we know, over Christmas even more so. We’ve got to keep working hard.”

Rowett was appointed Blues boss in October 2014 and guided the side from 21st in the Championship to a tenthplace finish.

They also finished tenth the following season before Rowett was sacked in December 2016 despite the side sitting seventh in the table. Birmingham had just beaten Ipswich 2-1 and were only three points off Reading in third.

There were murmurs Rowett had been looking for a move away. He had been linked with a host of top-tier Championship clubs.

Gianfranco Zola took over from Rowett but left the following April after a disastrous run saw the side plunge towards the relegation zone. Harry Redknapp succeeded Zola as Blues finished nineteenth.

Rowett denied he was courting other interest when he was in charge of Birmingham.

“People have spoken about it since and said, ‘he wanted to leave’, but if a manager wants to leave and you have a clause in your contract that says then you can leave, so I think it’s clear to see that I didn’t want to leave,” Rowett said.

“I felt we were building something good. As soon as someone does that to you then your mindset changes and focuses on what you have to do in the future to get success and improve as a manager. It’s as simple as that.

“I loved my time there, I’ve got a lot of fond memories. The fan base are tremendous, one of the best in the Championship. It’s good to go back. I’m sure I’m bound to get a little bit of stick which is a shame but that’s how it goes.

“We’ve [his coaching staff] been back three times and have won twice and lost once. It will be a difficult challenge but one we’ll look forward to.

“I think at Stoke where perhaps you haven’t performed to the level people expected and you get sacked you can understand it.

“We [Birmingham] were three points off third with, I think, the third-lowest budget in the division.

“But I’ve said it before, I’ve no problem because if an owner invests a hell of a lot of money in a football club, it’s a business, they can do whatever they want. They’re entitled to do what they want. I don’t even necessarily blame the owners.

Molumby, 20, is on a season-long loan from the Seagulls and there is no clause to make the deal permanent.

Brighton rate Ireland under-21 captain Molumby highly, and the player is also ambitious. He told the News earlier this season he wants to challenge for a first-team place with the Premier League side.

The News asked Rowett whether Millwall would be interested in trying to pursue a deal for Molumby.

The midfielder has made a big impact this season

“I’ve not spoken to Brighton about that,” Rowett said. “What I would say is that he’s a young player and they could see great potential in Jayson Molumby long-term.

“If they don’t then I’m sure that at some point that might be a question we ask. I’ve been really impressed with him so far.

attributes but he’s also got other attributes that can help us improve as a team.

“What Jayson needs to do, he’s so energetic, it’s about controlling that energy in the right areas, tactically making sure you use that energy at the right time in games. As with any young player those are the things you need to learn to be a better player.

“He’s a player we’re excited to work with, and for however long that might be we’ll try to improve him as a young midfielder.”

Millwall’s resources and their relatively small squad have been stretched this season with injuries.

Six first-team players, including Molumby, missed the trip to Swansea last weekend. Rowett wants to strengthen the squad in January.

“In some ways it underlines the importance of [adding to the squad], but you try to do it anyway,” Rowett said. “When you first come into a club you always see one or two areas where you want to add something different.

Whether that’s an impact player, a squad utility player or someone to come in and start, you’re always looking.

"It’s an interesting one because we’ve got some really good young players here. Since the emergency window was abolished, for me your under-23s are your emergency window. It’s whether we think some of those are ready to step up. But even then that’s quite a small group.

“The last thing you want to do in the Championship is leave yourself stretched, particularly over a period like this when there are a lot of games.”

The Lions travel to Birmingham on Saturday looking to make it two away wins in a row. Bodvarsson started as the central striker in a 5-2-3 system in the 1-0 victory at Swansea last weekend.

Bodvarsson then moved to the left side of the attack when Matt Smith came on.

The Iceland international arrived at Millwall not fully fit in the summer, but not beives he’s up to speed.

“It’s not the beginning you want to have,” Bodvarsson admitted. “Now I feel like I’m fitter and not catching up anymore, it gives me more confidence going ahead. The beginning was slow and I had to grind through it and get there.

“I’ve been there before with two strikers or one up top. The main thing for me in that Swansea game was to try to help get the team up the pitch and play as high as possible. I feel like it went well.

“Connor Mahoney and Jed [Wallace] were also close to me so I had support and people to play to and bring them higher up the pitch.

“I feel fitter than in the beginning of the season. I’ve had more games here and with the national team.

“When I was young I played for a very long time as a right winger. I still know that position from my early years. I prefer being up top but if needed I can play on the wing.
