Two councillors to stand in election

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Two Southwark Labour councillors are standing for election in commuterbelt constituencies in next month’s general election.

North Walworth councillor and deputy council-leader Rebecca Lury, who currently holds the culture, leisure, equalities and communities portfolio at Tooley Street, is standing as a prospective Labour MP for St Albans in Hertfordshire.

Her candidacy for the seat had only been announced on Wednesday – less than 24-hours before standing down.

Asked why Ms Graham’s candidacy was announced only hours before she stood down to help the Lib Dems, a Green Party spokesperson said it was ensure candidates were genuinely standing aside rather than pretending to give up seats.

“Hannah Graham was aware of the

agreement, and her candidacy was announced in time for her to stand aside in the Unite for Remain agreement,” the spokesperson said.

The party added that the ‘F**k the Lib Dems’ outburst was “expressing genuine anger at the attempt to use the threat of nuclear war for a political point.”

Ms Graham has previously stood as a Green candidate for London Assembly, and as a council candidate in Islington.

Ade Fatukasi, who had been named as the Liberal Democrat choice to take on Helen Hayes in Dulwich and West Norwood, will now contest Lewisham East for the party.

The seat was previously held by the Lib Dems’ Simon Hughes until the 2015 election.

In 2017, the Green Party managed 639 votes in the seat – meaning there is some distance to go to overturn the 13,000 majority secured by Coyle at the last election.

In Dulwich and West Norwood, the Liberal Democrats secured 4,475 votes which may now go to the single ‘Unite to Remain’ candidate.

The Green Party co-leader, Jonathan Bartley has announced that he will be the candidate standing to challenge incumbent Helen Hayes next month.

But with Hayes enjoying a solid 28,000 Labour majority, it looks a tall order to turn the seat a different colour.

Werner said the constituency was “tired of cuts to public services, rising air pollution and a lack of affordable housing”, and claimed Labour’s policies were the only ones to “deliver real change”.

In the last general election, the Liberal Democrats’ Ed Davey took Kingston and Surbiton from the Tories, increasing their share of votes by 10 per cent.

Conservative MP Anne Main held onto St Albans in 2017, with 43.1 per cent of the vote, as the Lib Dems came in second. It went to Labour in Blair’s 1997 landslide, but returned blue in 2005.

SANTA PAWS IS COMING TO TOWN

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A pampered Borough pooch who hangs out with top celebs might yet become an A-Lister himself after landing a plush gig on Primark’s Christmas advertising.

Since featuring in the News the Pomeranian pooch has netted himself a Wikipedia page, strutted the red carpet at BFI and ‘writes’ a life-style column in Pawhouse

Burly Bear has amassed a dedicated social media for his escapades, often featuring in snaps with top names like Keeley Hawes and Daniel Radcliffe.

The cuddly Pomeranian, who counts a £5,000 personalised Swarovskicrystal jacket among his many designer outfits, is now featuring on the Christmas in-store ads at Primark after being talent-spotted by producers.

“Someone had shown Burly to them [Primark] and they asked they could book him,” said Michael O’Hagan, who owns the pooch along with his partner, Ken, a freelance fashion hairdresser.

“We were really excited, I’ve been waiting months and months for the ads to come out.”

The publicity blitz, which sees Burly modelling leads and PJs alongside a family-of-five, launched this week.

The prime advertising spot is

just the latest in the Pomeranian’s adventures.

Since been featured in the News in August, Burly has netted himself a Wikipedia page, strutted along the red carpet at the BFI and been featured in a new online magazine called Pawhouse, where he will be ‘writing’ a life-style column.

He will no doubt have lots of tips to give his fellow dogs and their owners, as spoiled Burly eats an expensive raw food diet, wears designer collars from Tiffany’s and Louis Vuitton and rocks a pricey Moncler jacket.

Yet more collars and leads are some of the latest acquisitions – alongside a pair of glasses.

“We’ve got him a lovely leather jacket, collars and leads, he’s got about twenty now,” said Michael, who works in construction.

“We should really stop!” he laughed.

The couple estimate they have spent around £15,000 on Burly in about six months.

The nine-month-old often spends his spare time hanging out with celebs, as he enjoys exclusive access to stars through Ken’s work as a hairdresser.

Among his A-List pals are Alan Carr, Lily Collins and Game of Thrones

actress Emilia Clarke – who even gifted him a doggie rain mac.

But the pooch’s packed agenda is not finished with the Primark ads.

“We’ve also registered him to become a therapy dog,” said owner Michael.

He has registered with two services which provides time with dogs for those needing emotional support, such as those who are sick in hospital.

simon’s trademark taxi to be scrapped

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A former Bermondsey MP’s trademark taxi is headed for the scrapheap – because it’s no longer environmentally friendly enough.

Former MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Sir Simon Hughes, became well-known for driving a distinctive cab emblazoned in his party colours for nearly four decades.

But now after 37 years of driving different yellow taxis, from duel fuel, petrol, biofuel and diesel, the eyecatching cab will be retired in favour of a green vehicle.

Former Bermondsey MP will now look for a greener alternative “I will continue to walk, cycle and use public transport whenever possible,” he told the News. “But I will hope to find a good green replacement for my iconic cabs. They did me great service, and I hope did a bit to help to promote the black cab industry at the same time.”

After unsuccessfully contesting the 2017 election in Bermondsey and Old Southwark for the Liberal Democrats, Mr Hughes became the Chancellor of London South Bank University – and

he’s hoping to use the expertise of their engineering department to find a new motor that is “environmentally good and reasonably priced.”

Bermondsey and Old Southwark has been held by Labour’s Neil Coyle since 2015, who secured a nearly 13,000 majority at the last election.

Among those hoping to take the seat from him next month include Humaira Ali, from the Liberal Democrats, and Andrew Baker for the Conservatives.

Please help find my 95-year-old grandad’s beret

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A lorry collided with a railway bridge at Tulse Hill on Tuesday morning bringing travel misery to commuters across London and the south-east.

Emergency services were at the scene where the container had been unable to pass under a low bridge.

Trains on the Thameslink line, and Southern services from London Bridge to Beckenham were cancelled - with disruptions lasting past midday.

Buses were also diverted and motorists advised to avoid the Dulwich and Tulse Hill areas - including the South Circular - due to severe delays.

No one was injured during the incident.

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk An appeal has been launched to help find a 95-year-old war veteran’s beret after it went missing at London Bridge station when he was attending remembrance services.

Roy Miller, who served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War, is thought to have lost his beret after attending commemorations at Whitehall on Friday.

His granddaughter, Ella Nokes, has issued an appeal on social media for help to reunite the missing Burma Star association beret with veteran Roy. “My grandad, 95 year old WW2 veteran Roy Miller, was attending remembrance services in London this week, and has LOST his green military beret, probably in or around London Bridge Station,” said the 23-year-old Imperial College student.

“If anyone has seen it, please let me know! It will have his Burma Star Association badge on the front.”

Thousands have shared the appeal and expressed their best wishes for Roy, who turns 96 next month – with well-wishers even volunteering to replace it at their own expense if the

original is not found.

“Hope your grandad gets his beret back,” said one. “He looks amazing for his age! You must be extremely proud of him and I’m sure he is proud of you and all his family.

“Thank him for everything he sacrificed for those of us who have lived in relative peace due to heroes like him.”

The veteran, who lives in Wallington, in Sutton, was a gunner on the aircraft carrier HMS Indomitable seeing off Japanese kamikaze attacks.

“Kamikaze aircraft, we were warned about then, we were told we had to shoot them down or we’d lose the ship,” he told the BBC in 2010.

“We were attacked three or four times but we managed to fight them off, I believe we shot them down.”

Roy spent nearly three years fighting during the war and was aboard one of the warships which took surrender in Hong Kong.

He has also featured in a ‘Rethink Remembrance’ campaign by the Royal British Legion, which urges the public to think about the sacrifices of younger veterans and serving personnel.

New specialist support courses for those living with Type 2 diabetes

The launch of the new ‘Diabetes Book & Learn’ services coincides with today’s World Diabetes Day, raising awareness of both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes.

It is hoped the new scheme will help people manage their condition and reduce the risk of serious complications, such as blindness and amputation.

The project, from NHS Health Innovation Network, also aims to up attendance by making the courses easier to book and more flexible, with face-to-face or online options. All can be booked by phone or using the dedicated website.

According to the latest estimates, 23,812 people across the borough have a Type 2 diabetes.

Inquest reveals the house of horror where father and daughter were killed Exclusive

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Harrowing details of how a convicted sex offender and his daughter were brutally murdered have been heard for the first time at an inquest this week.

Southwark Coroner’s Court heard how the corpse of Noel Brown – jailed in 1999 for his offences - was found dismembered with a saw in the bath at his home in Deptford’s New Butt Lane in December 2017.

Parts of the arms and one of his legs had been cut off from the 69-year-old’s body.

His daughter, Marie Brown, a crèche worker from Peckham, had been strangled to death in the flat’s living room.

It is believed she disturbed her father’s killer as she went to check on him.

Tuesday’s inquest was told Mr Brown’s body parts have never been found, despite police scouring lakes, bins, and even rooftops with a helicopter to locate them.

Forty-one-year-old Marie “was fighting” at the time of being strangled, the court was told.

Pathology evidence suggested that abrasions on her body could have been from her fingernails, as she was attempting to stop herself being choked.

Officers have named Nathaniel Henry, a 37-year-old basketball coach at Peckham’s Damilola Taylor centre, as the suspected killer responsible for strangling the pair to death.

But alleged double murderer Henry will not be brought to justice, as he was himself found dead in a locked utilities cupboard only weeks after the grisly murders.

A hearing last month established he died of a drugs overdose on New Year’s Eve. (See box out - right) The court heard a moving statement from Marie’s daughter, who tried in vain to contact her mother, last seen shortly after noon on December 2, 2017.

When police entered the house they found parts of Noel’s arms and one of his legs had been cut off, and his daughter had been strangled to death in the living room “She told me she was going to check on my grandad,” said Venetia Brown, who was just nineteen at the time of the killings. “They’d been very close, and had been for as long as I could remember.

“Mum left our house that morning [Saturday], and that was the last I saw of my mum.”

Throughout the weekend, she attempted to call her mother numerous times, growing increasingly concerned at the “out of character” lack of a response.

“All of these calls just rang and rang. I was very worried,” she said. On Sunday, she contacted police to report her mother as missing, and was driven to her grandfather’s home.

But in the early hours of the following morning, the tragic news was revealed while she was staying at his neighbour’s.

“A police officer came back and said they had found two bodies in my grandad’s flat,” she said in the statement taken only weeks after the horrific crimes.

“There was no reason I know of why anyone would want to hurt my mum or my grandad. My mind is blown by this whole situation, I’m confused, I don’t know how I’m feeling.”

Noel’s neighbour and family friend, Jennifer Hilton, had also tried to contact Noel continuously, and when she did not hear from Marie, assumed she had found him and had gone to hospital.

“I later found out that Marie and Noel had died in Noel’s flat. Noel was my best friend in my life,” said Ms Hilton in a witness statement.

He is described by close friends as loving to write poetry and had been writing a book about his life before he was killed.

Noel had been in poor health before his death, having suffered a stroke in 2015 and was being treated for prostate cancer.

He would frequently visit Paddy Power bookmakers on Deptford High Street to have a bet on the horse races, along with his best friend.

The horror scene encountered by officers was recalled by the Met’s DCI Simon Harding, who has previously described the case as unlike anything he has seen in nearly three decades of policing. “The first thing we noticed is that Marie was dressed exactly as she left. She still had her coat on … so it did not look as if she had been there long,” he told the court.

“In terms of Noel, there was a significant amount of bleach around the body, which would indicate a form of clean-up process.”

DCI Harding also detailed how police pored over a nearly three-mile radius of CCTV footage over months in a bid to trace Noel’s last movements and catch his killer – named by officers as ‘Rucksack man.’

“We had no immediate lead as to who it might have been,” he said.

While the suspect could not be discussed in detail at the hearing for legal reasons, DCI Harding confirmed: “I am not looking for anyone else in relation to these deaths.”

Recording a verdict of unlawful killing for both Marie and Noel, Assistant Coroner Tony Badenoch QC concluded that Mr Brown was strangled to death sometime between November 30 and December 4.

He also found that Ms Brown was fatally strangled between December 2 and December 4.

“I want to express my condolences to the family,” he said.

“I’m very grateful to you all for attending today and engaging in this process.”

Turning to Marie’s daughter, he added: “Your mother would be very proud of you.”

Mother-of-two Marie Brown, 41, worked at Nunhead’s Ivydale Primary School as a crèche worker.

She had not been in contact with Noel “for years” growing up, but made contact as an adult, and would talk to him on the phone daily.

She was described by family following her death as “a calm, peaceful person – slow to anger and quick to forgive.”

Her two children, Venetia and Jayda, are described as “her life”.

Suspected killer Nathaniel Henry was found dead in his store cupboard Nathaniel Henry was found dead inside a locked electricals cupboard just weeks after the gruesome murder for which he is the suspect.

An inquest into Mr Henry’s death last month heard how the 37-year-old was found clothed by officers inside the locked communal cupboard at his Peckham Grove block of flats on New Year’s Eve 2017.

The cupboard had tissue stuffed into the lock from the inside; Mr Henry was found surrounded by a blister pack of tablets, personal belongings and some food, the inquest heard.

He had died of a drugs overdose, it was established.

The Met’s DCI Simon Harding told Southwark Coroner’s Court that Henry was reported missing by his mother on December 12 2017, after last being seen on December 5.

Later that evening “he sent a text message to a friend saying “I’m going to be missing this week. I’m not my usual self,’ the officer said.

The 37-year-old was described by officers as slim, bald, and around sixfeet tall, with a tattoo of a mallet on his right arm.

Nathaniel Henry was linked to the murders only after he was found dead.

The court heard how Henry, a father-of-three, had suffered from depression, and previously made attempts on his life.

But Senior Coroner Dr Andrew Harris said he would not record a suicide verdict after speaking of a “degree of uncertainty” over whether Henry had intended to take tablets with the aim of ending his own life.

Instead a verdict of “drug-related” death was recorded. No evidence of third-party involvement in his death was found.

Private Lee O’Callaghan was 20-yearsold when he was killed in combat in Basrah, in 2004. Lee had been on duty for five months and had only a week left before he was due to fly home and be reunited with his family.

August 2019 marked the fifteenth anniversary of the Walworth soldier’s death. As the News reported last week, Lee’s friends Lee Evans and John Davies decided to club together and raise funds for a new memorial bench, and asked Millwall if they could place it at Lee’s favourite club.

The pair had already succeeded in having a road named after him in the redeveloped Heygate Estate near the family home - O’Callaghan Way. But, as Lee was such a huge Millwall fan, they

always wanted to do something special for him at the Den. More than £2,000 of donations poured in from the community and, with support from Millwall sponsor Huski chocolate, they were able to pay for the bespoke Belfast-made tribute.

Lee’s younger brother, Danny, who was sixteen when he lost his brother, told the News they had initially expected a wooden bench with a memorial plaque, so it was a “huge surprise” to see the final piece, which has been placed in front of the Barry Kitchener Stand.

The design, created by GD Steel, has the inscription “once a lion always a lion” with two Millwall lions next to the Cap Badge of the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment.

Historians to gather in SE16 ahead of 400th anniversary

2020 will be 400 years since the Mayflower set off for its maiden voyage to the New World from Rotherhithe – and to mark the occasion a series of monthly talks will run from AprilNovember. Booking for an introductory free talk will open on November 28th – Thanksgiving Day – which also marks the start of the Mayflower 400 commemoration year.

“Our line-up features some of the leading experts in the Mayflower world but the talks will still be very accessible, with the first evening bringing us all up-to-speed and introducing key themes to be investigated further in the lectures which follow,” said Michael Daniels, president of the Bermondsey & Rotherhithe Local History Society.

“Join us on a journey of exploration as we discover the remarkable story of The Mayflower, from its early beginnings to its legacy and beyond.”

Temporary reprieve for old oaks

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The two threatened mature oaks in Sydenham Hill Wood have been saved – for now – after an intervention from local MP Helen Hayes.

Campaigners feared the oaks would be felled by early November as part of planned maintenance work by Southwark Council on Cox’s Walk Footbridge, which both trees straddle.

After an eleventh-hour plea from the Dulwich and West Norwood MP, the council halted the work and is believed soon to be launching a more in-depth consultation with residents about the way forward.

Hayes had petitioned the council to rethink their decision, and had support from two Dulwich councillors, Catherine Rose – former Mayor of Southwark – and Andy Simmonds.

“Southwark Council has agreed to halt the decision to fell two oak

trees in Sydenham Hill Woods so that further options can be explored and community engagement take place,” she announced last week.

The council will now look again at other options to make sure the footbridge stays safe. Both trees had been due to be cut down at any point from Saturday, November 2, despite a public outcry that has seen 2,000 people sign a petition to protect them during essential safety work on the bridge.

POSSIBLY FATAL C.DIFF INFECTIONS ‘POTENTIALLY UNDER-INVESTIGATED’

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Possibly fatal bacterial infections at Guy’s and St Thomas’s Trust could be being under-investigated, a coroner has said after a patient’s death.

Assistant coroner Briony Ballard raised the alarm in a report published last week investigating the death of a patient in St Thomas’s Hospital in 2017, who was found to have C. diff.

The Clostridium difficile bacteria can cause serious bowel problems, and symptoms of diarrhea, dehydration and painful stomach cramps.

Thirty-seven-year-old David Williams had been admitted to the hospital for complex surgery, and died as a result of ‘unintended’ complications with the procedure.

He had been treated on a high-dependency unit, was transferred to a general ward, and then back again to the unit when his condition worsened.

In the report it said he had contracted c.diff on the general ward – but because he was on a high-dependency unit at the time it was discovered, conditions were not investigated on the general ward.

The Trust admitted that treatment Mr Williams received on the general ward was “deficient in delivering the fundamentals of care.”

“At Mr Williams’ inquest I was told that c.diff infection is a potentially fatal infection,” said Ms Ballard, explaining that if found, the infection

triggers an investigation.

However, “if the patient has recently been transferred from another ward, the investigation does not extend to the conditions on the transferring ward,” she said.

“In this case it was the transferring ward where there were found to have been failings… about which the family had raised significant concerns at the time.

“Although I found at inquest that the presence of c.diff was not relevant to how Mr Williams ultimately came by his death, I have residual concerns with the potential under investigation of c.diff cases within the Trust.”

The failures only came to light after a probe in September last year at the Coroner’s request.

However, it was “limited” as it was carried out “significantly after the event.”

The Trust said it would be inappropriate to comment at this time on whether its processes for investigating the bacterial cases had been changed.

It also refused to say at this stage whether an investigation should have been carried out sooner on the general ward after concerns were raised by Mr Williams’s family.

“We take the issues raised in the Coroner’s report extremely seriously and will be providing a formal response to the Coroner,” said a spokesperson for the Trust.

“Prior to this it would not be appropriate to comment.”

The Trust must now provide an explanation to the coroner of actions it has taken to prevent future deaths.

Millwall and Charlton fans walked together for ten miles before the game in memory of murdered teenagers

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A ten-mile march by Millwall and Charlton fans in memory of murdered teens Jimmy Mizen and Rob Knox raised over £2,800 for charity.

The ‘Together for Ten’ walk saw Lions and Addicks fans put aside their differences in memory of the murdered teens, by walking from Sidcup station to The Den prior to the derby on Saturday.

Millwall supporter Jimmy was killed in 2008 aged only sixteen in a Lee Green bakery altercation, while eighteen-yearold Charlton fan Rob was fatally stabbed outside a Sidcup bar the same year.

Money from the march, organised by Millwall fan Dan Poore and Charlton supporter Craig Peppiatt, will be split between the ‘For Jimmy’ charity, and Charlton Athletic Community Trust.

“It went really well,” said organiser Dan Poore. “We had people running across the road to stop and talk to us.

“We had one lady who stopped us to say, ‘are you the guys doing the march’ and then she ran off to go give us some money.”

“My feet are a bit sore, but the actual walk was so easy because we had such a fantastic group of people doing it.”

The parents of Jimmy and Rob were waiting for the group at The Den – and they were given a round of applause by fans as they made it into the ground.

“Everyone was applauding us as we went into the ground by the ticket office,” Dan added.

“Margaret [Jimmy’s mum] was the first person I went up to and I gave her a hug and she said, ‘thank you so much.’

“They all seemed so grateful for what we’d all done.” Around 25 people took

part in the march – and they made it to The Den in under four hours, despite stopping off for a “cheeky pint” half-way through.

The boys’ parents will take part in the ten-mile walk if it is held again when Charlton and Millwall next play against each other.

One Millwall fan taking part, Elizabeth Coombs, said beforehand: “I’m walking the Together for Ten in memory of all the young kids who have lost their lives to violence. I hope this sends a message out to help change the future for our children.”

Charlton supporter Sami Ibrahim added: “I am walking for Together for Ten to help prevent lives being taken so young and I’m doing it for the future of my children and our youth.”

Millwall won the clash after an extratime header by substitute Matt Smith saw the Lions best their rivals 2-1.

The fundraising page for the ‘Together for Ten’ walk remains open and can be found by searching ‘Virgin Money Together for Ten’.

People are invited to write personal messages that will then be hung on a massive Christmas Tree in the garden.

This is the 20th annual memorial service, which was established by the late Barry Albin-Dyer after getting the garden built in 1999.

Jon Dyer told the News: “The memorial garden meant so much to our dad. It means as much to us and always will. It is a place for people to come together and remember those they have lost at Christmas, which is a time for the family.”

Thousands of people each year attend the Christmas memorial service at Bermondsey funeral director’s Albin’s and this year’s is extra special as it’s their 20th anniversary.

Taking place on Wednesday, December 4th, it gives locals a chance to remember lost loved ones as the festive period approaches.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Bermondsey’s West Lane memorial turned silent for two minutes at 11am on Monday as residents joined the nation in observing 101 years since the Armistice.

The commemoration, organised by local residents, was led by Canon Gary Jenkins, of nearby St James’s Church, with readings by the Worshipful Mayor of Southwark Cllr Sandra Rhule.

Among those laying wreaths in memory of the fallen were representatives of the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe Royal British Legion, councillors from both Labour and the opposition Liberal Democrats and local primary-school pupils.

It marks the centenary since the two-minute silence to commemorate the Armistice in 1918 was first observed.

The well-attended event saw those assembled hear ‘We Shall Keep the Faith’, the famous remembrance

poem by Moina Michael, while the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe Royal British Legion spoke the Kohima Declaration: “When you go home, tell them of us and say, ‘For your tomorrow, we gave our today.’”

Services were also held across the borough on Sunday with the official council-led service taking place at Walworth Square under the direction of Dr Jane Steen, the Archdeacon of Southwark.

Residents across Southwark paid their respects for those who lost their lives in conflicts at other locations in the borough too, including at Kennington Lane, Camberwell Memorial and the Dulwich Memorial.

The Bermondsey Armistice event had previously been the subject of a council U-turn after officials said they would hold a service at its offices in Tooley Street rather than attend West Lane.

However, after a backlash from Bermondsey and Rotherhithe residents, the council said it had “noted the strength of feeling” in the local community and that it would attend.

scheme for victims of child abuse extended Redress Scheme to compensate those abused in Shirley Oaks children’s home extends to 2022 and across south London

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A compensation scheme for victims of historic abuse in Lambeth Council’s children’s homes has been extended by two years to enable more survivors to come forward - including those now living across south London and the rest of the UK.

Last month Lambeth Council’s cabinet approved the decision to extend the Lambeth Redress Scheme deadline for claims to 2022 - rather than closing on January 1, 2020.

Hundreds are believed to have been abused and neglected while growing up in the authority’s network of children’s homes, open from the 1930s to early 1990s.

The Redress Scheme, launched in January 2018, is expected to cost the council £100 million in total.

It provides compensation to survivors without going through the courts. There have been more than 1,250 applications so far.

Public hearings into the scandal were expected to take place before January 2020, but after being delayed until between April and November next year, with a full report due to be published the year after, the decision has been taken to extend the application deadline.

Cllr Jack Hopkins, Lambeth Council’s leader, said: “We’re working hard to ensure we can do everything within our powers to compensate survivors, and I will be supporting this extension because I believe it’s the right thing to do.

“A lot of extra work has been done over the last six months to listen to survivors and ensure the scheme works for them. That includes running sessions with people who have been compensated to get feedback on their experience and working with the National Association for People Abused in Childhood to make sure information is easy to understand.

“We are determined to continue with this work. Our former children’s home residents were very badly let down, and the Redress Scheme is incredibly important in not only compensating people, but publicly acknowledging the impact on those that suffered abuse. I want to apologise to abuse survivors on behalf of the council.”

The scheme involves a harm’s way payment of up to £10,000 for those who

feared neglect or abuse, and separate payments of up to £125,000 for neglect and abuse survivors, made on a case-bycase basis.

As well as financial compensation, the scheme also offers independent legal representation, counselling and specialist advice with housing, welfare, benefits, further education and employment.

However, the council has faced criticism for how long it has taken for payments to be made, with at least one high-profile lawyer saying the final compensation offered has been far less than initially promised.

Solicitors’ firm Irwin Mitchell has secured three settlements for clients totalling more than £290,000. Its legal team currently represents around 50 victims.

One survivor had contacted the firm with details of sexual, physical and psychological abuse while at Shirley Oaks children’s home for two years in the 1960s. He says he also saw staff target other children.

The man, now in his 50s, had never told anyone about his experiences until the scale of the scandal came to light and the Redress Scheme opened. He has now received a five-figure settlement.

He said: “I had a terrible childhood and feel as though Lambeth took away my youth and my innocence. While the abuse stopped, the effects have stayed with me.

“I have had a long history of mental health problems as a result and my education was disrupted.

“Over the years I have not been good at relationships. I prefer to live on my own.

“I have found it difficult to parent my children because I am very strict with them and worry about them. I am over-

vigilant and am concerned about their safety at all times.

Another to receive compensation was taken into care in the ‘70s but then placed back with her family, where she says she was abused and neglected.

After being placed in a Shirley Oaks care home, the girl says she was sexually, racially and physically abused, and witnessed staff bullying other children.

Now in her 50s, she received £122,000 of compensation.

“Being in care was a nightmare.

Instead of being protected, every day was a struggle and consisted of trying to think of ways to avoid being abused.

“It has been a long, hard road but this settlement has been a welcome step and makes me want to try and put everything well and truly behind me.”

Another male victim, who was separated from his siblings in care and says he was sexually abused by a female staff member in Shirley Oaks, described the impact of the abuse he suffered throughout the ‘50s and ‘60s.

Now in his 60s, he received a settlement of £155,000.

“Nobody, let alone a child, should have to suffer the prolonged abuse many of us suffered”, he said.

In April of this year, two former children’s home workers were convicted after being found guilty of sexually abusing boys in their care at Rowan House’ part of Shirley Oaks children’s home’ a Lambeth home in South Norwood, and homes in Kingston and south Wales.

Bernard Collins, aged 73, from Worcester Road, Sutton, was sentenced to four years in prison, and Patrick Grant, now aged 70, from Partridge Road in Cardiff, was sentenced to eight years, after a seven-week trial at Inner London Crown Court.

Crossrail hit by more delays African shop is about trade - not aid

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Crossrail will not be operational until 2021, and may be up to £650m over budget, it was revealed on Friday morning.

The flagship east-west rail line had been due to open in December 2018.

The latest set-back for the project, known officially as the Elizabeth Line, was confirmed by Mark Wild, the chief exec of Crossrail Ltd. Crossrail has been repeatedly billed

by City Hall and TfL as a solution to overcrowding on the Jubilee Line at Canada Water and Canary Wharf.

When operational, the route will run from Canary Wharf to Heathrow, providing another option for commuters using the Jubilee to get to the financial district.

“Our latest assessment is that the opening of the central section will not occur in 2020, which was the first part of our previously declared opening window,” said Mr Wild.

“The Elizabeth line will open as soon

as practically possible in 2021.”

“We are doing everything we can to complete the Elizabeth line as quickly as we can, but there are no short-cuts to delivering this hugely complex railway.”

The delay has been caused by the need to develop software for signaling systems, he said.

“Further certainty” about when Crossrail would open will be provided in the New Year, insisted Wild.

Cost forecasts for the central section of the line has now risen to over £15bn, with the budget over-running between £400m to £650m more than a budget agreed in December last year.

TfL said the news was “of course disappointing” but insisted Crossrail would open as soon as possible in 2021.

“The Crossrail team continues to make progress completing the outstanding work on stations and tunnels,” said a spokesperson.

Mariam Tijani officially launched her concession store Bidhaar at Market Peckham, 133a Rye Lane, in October, selling products made in Africa and by its diaspora communities.

Mariam, from Croydon, says the vision for the “afro-urban” business came during a visit to Nigeria, where the 31-year-old realised many modern brands struggle with distribution and marketing.

She describes Bidhaar’s target market as “cultural in-betweeners’ with a passion for Africa beyond traditional crafts.

“I want us to build legacy brands that will last forever,” she explains.

“We are careful with who we work with and want everyone to be a part of

Mariam also believes Peckham’s regeneration can be an advantage in reaching new customers.

“Peckham has a bad reputation of being run down, but this is changing. I’ve known Peckham before it was gentrified and it’s growing more and more unrecognisable by the week. Our minimalistic design will fit in with the changes and hopefully it’ll attract a more diversified audience that wants to learn more about Africa.”

Brands she has selected to work with include London-based Misemi, a clothing line with a street-wear influence, and Egyptian brand Up-Fuse, which employs refugees to make backpacks and other accessories from recycled plastic bags.

“If you buy from designers they are able to provide for their families. Bidhaar helps others abroad whilst creating independence.”

The annual “Icebreaker Challenge” will see fancy dress-clad swimmers plunge into Brockwell Lido this December to raise funds for homeless charity Crisis, writes Katherine Johnston...

Tunde Adeloye, from Bermondsey, wears an eye patch on his right eye from which he has no vision.

The player for the YouTube Sunday league team SE Dons set up the ‘Free the Patch’ movement to help build the confidence of young visually impaired people.

Tunde said the inspiration for the eye patch came from him being uncomfortable with his eye being visible on the YouTube channel as he played football. He also wanted a way to make his character memorable.

“I was being filmed and I wasn’t comfortable with my eye being on camera, so that’s where the patch came from. It cut out the mystery, and people asking if I was really blind,” he said.

Now his campaigning efforts have been recognised by being shortlisted as Campaigner of the Year in the RNIB’s See Differently award.

“I’m flattered to think that what I am doing is being recognised,” the 32-year-old added.

The movement he set up has been backed by surgeons, professional footballers, musicians and comedians to help young visually impaired people break boundaries.

RNIB CEO Matt Stringer said: “The RNIB See Differently Awards will

celebrate those who dedicate their time, passion and skills to changing the world for blind and partially sighted people.

“Our shortlisted National Finalists are all fantastic and we wish them the best of luck.”

Whether Tunde has been successful in winning the national award will be announced at a ceremony which will take place at the Glaziers Hall, London Bridge on 26 November 2019.

Confusion reigns over responsibility for cleaning up rail station rubbish

Confusion over who is responsible for keeping Peckham Rye Station clean continues as Network Rail, Govia Thameslink and Arch Co all claim it’s not their job.

Southwark Council has been forced to put on extra cleaning to cover the area after residents complained overflowing commercial bins and litter in the passageways near the overground were making the area resemble a “municipal refuse tip”.

The local authority initially blasted Network Rail for failing in its duties, saying their street cleaning teams were having to go in at taxpayers’ expense even though it wasn’t their land.

But Network Rail, its operator Govia

Thameslink – which manages the station – and Arch Co, which is believed to have taken over land outside the station, have all told the News they are not responsible for collection at this site.

And, in a further twist, the Land Registry details for that patch of land have yet to be updated, meaning the council has so far been unable to confirm 100 per cent who actually owns it.

A Network Rail spokesperson told the News last week: “The area in question at the entrance of Peckham Rye station is maintained by Arch Co, who have taken over the Network Rail Commercial Estate business.

“We are equally disappointed by the fly tipping affecting the area and discussions are ongoing with stakeholders including Arch Co and Southwark Council to find a long-term solution in managing the issue”.

Govia Thameslink Railway declined to make a statement when asked by this newspaper – but did confirm they understood Arch Co to be responsible.

Bizarrely, an Arch Co spokesperson confirmed last Friday: “While we believe the responsibility for this area sits with Southwark Council and the train operator, we’ll be sending out a team to clean up the

waste over the next day or so.

“Given that this reflects on the overall site, we’ll act to tackle the issue to improve the environment for our tenants and members of the public who use the area.”

After much to-and-froing, the News asked Southwark Council if they were any more certain about who would be paying for the upkeep from now on.

A somewhat baffled Cllr Livingstone, the Cabinet Member overseeing transport and the environment, explained: “This land definitely does not belong to the council. To the best of our knowledge it is the responsibility of Network Rail, or of their buyer. However, until the Land Registry system has been updated with new ownership details, Network Rail and their buyer are the only ones who can confirm the sale.

“The council is continuing to try and contact someone at Network Rail, to secure clarification about the situation, and make whoever is responsible for the land, take care of it.

“In the interim, the council will endeavour to minimise the impact on local residents, rail users, businesses and their customers, by maintaining a reasonable level of cleanliness at the site.”

Allow your garden to sparkle this winter

cool, blustery wet October has given way to the last of the autumn months.

November weather often brings mist and fog on a southerly airstream; but if the wind moves round to the north, cold and bright conditions are likely to dominate the month.

Leaves are slow to fall this year (but have now picked up a pace) revealing the intricate structure of the trees – and as branches become bare surface textures are also more visible.

The graceful Silver birch has a luminous quality and is much more noticeable during the dark winter months. Cornus alba (Dogwood) without leaves provides a splash of colour revealing shiny, smooth fluorescent red stems.

Many shrubs such as Cotoneaster will hold their berries through the winter - providing interest but also much needed food for the birds. There are a limited number of plants flowering at this time – mainly shrubs - with winter Jasmine one of the first into bloom. Summer roses and geraniums are hanging on providing pockets of bright colour.

British Summer time ended on 27th October and the shorter days make it feel like winter although we are not there yet. Attention is inevitably turning to Christmas and preparations will start to

I have been researching my family history for the last two or three years and Henshaw Street came up in so many census and electoral roll documents for different members of the family from the 1960’s back to the late 1800’s.

I imagine some of my distant family members knew your family as one of the girls at number 56 Henshaw Street (the Morris family) married into the Chesney family too! It was great seeing the old photograph of Henshaw Street children, it left me wondering if any of my family were in the photo.

Birmingham bar bad mouths Bermondsey A row over a Rotherhithe boozer has now made its way up to Lancashire, of all places.

As the News reported last week, a backlash has been sparked over an officer-approved decision to knock down the Albion pub in Rotherhithe for flats.

The Albion was the subject of a column by the Lancashire Telegraph’s beer expert this week, who decried planning chair Cllr Martin Seaton for “refusing to acknowledge the concerns of the local community.”

A group of Surrey Docks locals have taken umbrage with a new footbridge – because it has an “offensive” blue railing.

The new bridge has been unveiled over the Albion Channel as part of works to improve cycle routes. But its colour has displeased a group of residents.

“The consensus among the residents in the area is that the new bridge does not suit the style of the canal and the surrounding buildings at all,” states a petition to the council. The most offensive feature — and easiest to remedy — is the blue railing. The blue is at odds with the colours of all surrounding buildings ” They call for the crossing to instead be painted “entirely in black.” At the time of writing, the petition to the council has received 28 signatures.

Dual crossword A rent cap is one way – but won’t succeed without new council housing being built across Southwark

A

cap on private rent seems like a no-brainer as after decades of council home selloffs and an exponentially growing population - but a cap is not the real fix. Private landlords have failed to self-regulate since the early ‘90s.

It has fallen on the hard work of campaigners, to fight for an end to no-fault evictions and push for reform. But although improvements are being made – including changes to what letting agents can and can’t charge for – the fundamental issue is that housing is in such short supply.

Landlords in Southwark can charge sky-high rents and benefit from reinvesting in a property likely to only increase in value, while residents are left unable to save enough money to pay for a mortgage.

Some cities have introduced rent caps, many with similar issues of prime real estate, a shortage of affordable housing, and stock lost to AirBnB holiday rentals.

Rent is generally considered “affordable” if it is no more than 30 per cent of the tenant’s income.

Studies show young people in particular, who are most likely to rent in the first place, are spending more than half their income on rent in London. Rent controls are not new to London – or England – and were in place for decades. Although bad and expensive housing existed, as did unscrupulous landlords, it wasn’t until 1989 that the private sector was given a free rein on setting rents.

Paris, New York, and Berlin all have, or are close to having, rent caps implemented. However there are concerns reform could have the unintended consequences of owners selling off their property, and taking it off the rental market, and those unable to cover their own costly buy-to-let mortgages.

When we have so many people on the council’s housing waiting list, many forced to live further out of London, and thousands in temporary emergency accommodation, the private sector should be controlled as much as possible. But it’s new council homes that will make the biggest difference.

The turn out at West Lane was heartening to see

t is heartening to see such a proud, strong turn-out for the West Lane memorial service on Monday, remembering our fallen and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

This is especially true given the fact that the annual event nearly didn’t happen.

Thanks to our readers’ dedicated lobbying, Southwark Council agreed to backtrack on its decision not to attend the event in favour of Borough High Street and Walworth.

The respectful crowd on the day, young and old, confirmed they made the right decision.

With the cathedral’s awe-inspiring architecture stood on tip toes to the skies above, it’s as if Archbishop Thomas has God and the heavens on his side in this play by the Scena Mundi Theatre Company.

No wonder then, that Thomas’s murder rendered him a martyr and why the universal themes relevant in the 12th century was applicable to Eliot’s era of rising Fascism and to the tumultuous times of today.

King Henry wanted control over the church, whilst Thomas was adamant

that no person, including the King, should have arbitrary power above that of God. Serious subject matter to deliver a performance about, and in need of commanding voices - this cast delivered.

Amongst the vaulted ceilings Thomas, (Jasper Britton’s) voice aided by sound equipment, likened to a great orator. Charismatically crystal clear stating Thomas’s case with passion and conviction. Centre stage, he exuded a presence even when facing four murderous knights.

Inclusion of a female chorus, a trope used in mediaeval tragedy, created impact. Like the ringing of bells, they repeatedly and hauntingly wailed their fears, “We pay taxes, girls have gone missing, but we are living and partly living”, reminding us they speak of society’s fears and the dreaded repercussions of challenging power

structures - despite suffering be grateful you’re alive.

Immersive in style, audiences are encouraged to consider their part in events as the knights try to justify their actions. Second Knight (Pip Brignall) faces us stating, “I have your approval - I see it in your face”; and as an audience “We are as guilty because we benefit now from what happened”.

What happened to Thomas shaped history. Effectively, we as a society make decisions that continue to shape history.

A special, professional performance that’s hugely atmospheric and exciting to watch in the beautiful Southwark Cathedral. Wrap up warm and go see.

Interview: Writing duo continue to impress with book The Shitshow

After such a long gap since the last book by writing duo Steve Lowe and Alan McArthur it was a lovely surprise to have their latest publication drop through the letter box, writes Michael Holland...

The Green Fairy at the Union Theatre is an ode to queer parenting An ode to queer parenting and overcoming anxiety, The Green Fairy is an immersive pub musical following one woman’s struggle to take back control of her own life before it’s too late.

Writers Jack Sain and Stephen Libby said: "We are incredibly excited to bring The Green Fairy to The Union Theatre this autumn.

“It's a queer story, a story about Londoners, about growing up and about getting on. The show has evolved and grown, genders have changed, themes have twisted, songs and scenes have been thrown out, new ones created. Once again it follows in the footsteps of earlier successes and rips into all those who need to be brought down.

This is a double act that knows each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and the trust that has built up allows them to write remotely - one in the West Country, and one, McArthur, right here in Southwark where it was easy for me to pin him down for an interview.

Why has it been so long since your last book?

“We are powerless over the timing.

The publisher projects a massive “S” into the night sky and we emerge from the misty mountain under which we slumber and start swearing at stuff.”

What is it about?

‘The state of the world. But funny.

Well, hopefully. We’ve ranged across quite a vast number of topics this time.

So, yes there are inevitably the Brexit and Trump references – but there’s stuff about film and telly, the rise of the robots, fruit (a consideration of what easy peelers are all about), vegetables (online reviews of frozen peas), space exploration, some riffs about historical stuff… There’s even a poem – about when pro-hunt activists recently nailed dead crows to the telly naturalist Chris Packham’s gate.”

How do you work remotely?

“We decide what we’re going to write about collectively and then we write separately and edit each other.

Because we’ve worked together for a long time now it’s generally obvious who should do what. Sometimes I’ll be writing something and will just

naturally leave a gap: it just seems obvious that a Steve bit should go there. Sometimes we’ll take something the other has done and run with the idea, or slash it to pieces – which can be more controversial obviously (“You’ve crucified my art, you utter bastard! Why not stick a knife into my heart and be done with it?” – that kind of thing). I think the secret of collaboration is that you have to have a shared vision of what you are trying to do: then discussions or the occasional row are about how best to get to where you want.

Otherwise it’s just a battle of wills.”

Is this book a catalyst for a spurt of new writing and books?

“I certainly hope so.

There’s quite a list of stuff that didn’t make it into this book – for time reasons, length and so on – which we are keen to crack on with. We’ve been very lucky to work with editors who have been very supportive and sympathetic. But, at the end of the day, it’s obviously much easier for them to do that if they can flog a few copies.”

What is your research method?

“Are you taking notes all the time about life in general? ‘Basically, yes.

And again, because I’ve been doing this for a while, you get better at it – in the sense that I make far fewer notes these days but the notes are more useful. You get a sense for what might be interesting or important.

There are certain things and themes that just interest me. Steve and I talk about the sort of stuff that ends up in our books anyway; that’s how it started in the first place. Obviously there is overlap with other writers and comedy things and so on, but for good or ill we are to some extent ploughing our own furrow, I think.

Too late to stop now, anyway.”

“It’s available at all online booksellers at various prices, but we like to use good independent bookshops where at £12.99 it is still a snip.”

Harpoons, sea shanties and rotting blubber

Two hundred years ago, a nose peg was essential for a stroll through Rotherhithe. It might not have looked stylish but, with hundreds of pounds of rotting whale blubbe­­­r filling the air with a putrid stench, it was certainly advisable, writes Joey Millar...

Nowadays, the peninsula smells just a little sweeter and the streets are thankfully clear of decomposing whale flesh. Rotherhithe’s whaling heritage, however, is still reflected in the names of streets (Finland Street and Norway Quay), water features (Greenland Dock) and - as ever in Southwark pubs (‘The Ship and Whale’ and ‘The Moby Dick’).

London, for many years, was overlooked when it came to whaling, with more coastal areas like East Yorkshire and East Anglia dominating the trade. Slowly but surely, however, Rotherhithe began to make a name for itself as a hub for the lucrative industry.

Between 1725 and 1732, an average of two whaling operations set sail from Howland Dock for the

Arctic every month, with the port soon becoming so synonymous with forays north that it was eventually re-named Greenland Dock, after the destination of choice for Rotherhithe whale hunters.

The dock was a hubbub of activity during its whaling peak, with huge ships coming and going and an army of workers undertaking the necessary, if grim, task of boiling whale blubber into oil.

Unfortunately for those brave souls, on the long trip back from the Arctic the whale flesh would inevitably begin rotting. Upon arriving back home in Rotherhithe, the crews would unload the festering blubber, which reportedly gave off a revolting odour.

The blubber – a thousand tons of it every year - was boiled down into oil, which was used in lamps on the

quays, while the other more glamorous parts of the whale, namely the bones and the flesh, were also portioned off and sold off for a healthy profit.

However, if the suffering of the poor blubber-boilers seemed unenviable, spare a thought for the sailors who set off from Rotherhithe for the freezing north. Each ship contained around seven rowing boats, which were lowered into the sea used by the hardy fisherman to catch their prey once they reached Greenland or Scandinavia.

Silence was golden for these sailors, who would slowly row up behind a basking whale before harpooning it

from close-range. Using a rope attached to the harpoon, the sailors would cling on desperately until the frantic whale tired itself out, at which point it could be killed with further harpoons.

There was a huge risk of danger to the sailors involved, however, with the sheer strength and weight of the panicked whale capable of dragging their flimsy rowing boats down into the murky depths at any moment.

Even in summertime, the waters of Greenland are best avoided – especially with an angry, 50-ton whale thrashing about below.

There was some downtime, however, with the writing and singing of sea shanties a popular time-killing pastime for Rotherhithe sailors a long way from home.

One of the more wellknown

ones, which was called The Whales Hunters and was written aboard a ship based at Greenland Dock, described the hardship and dedication of those Southwark sailors: And when that we come to Greenland where the icy winds do blow, we tacked about all in the north all among the frost and snow.

Our finger-tips were frozen off And likewise our toe-nails, As we crawled on deck, my boys, Looking out for Greenland whale.

The whaling industry began to die out during the 1800s, at which point Rotherhithe’s docks turned its attention to industrial alternatives.

It’s whaling history remains, however, in every Scandinavian place name and with every pint sunk at the ‘Moby Dick’ – the smell of boiled blubber, however, has mercifully faded.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable works to be carried out by Power on Connections, Mechanical Movements, M & M Crane Hire, it made, an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named road.

Whilst the works are in progress, or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or load in: a. Goal-scorer Christian Smith says focus is back on the league after fourth-tier side prove too strong

By Simeon Wright at Champion Hill sport@southwarknews.co.uk DEFENDER CHRISTIAN Smith has assured Dulwich Hamlet supporters that focus has returned to the National League South, after Carlisle United ended their FA Cup run last Friday.

Dulwich fell to an anticlimactic 4-1 defeat at a packed Champion Hill, as a crowd of 3,336 plus a BBC Two audience watched Carlisle’s Harry McKirdy inspire his side to an end a journey which had seen the Hamlet reach the first round for the first time since 1998.

Smith gave Hamlet hope in the 49th

minute when his fine header halved the half-time deficit to make it 2-1, but a 25-yard thunderbolt from Mike Jones and a clinical finish from McKirdy ultimately ended the dream.

Smith says manager Gavin Rose praised his side’s efforts, but has quickly reset their priorities.

“We've had our little run and the

focus has been on the FA Cup,” Smith said. “We knew we had that to look forward to but that's out the way now and we need to put a run of league wins together and get ourselves back up to where we should be.

“He [Rose] said we can be proud of the performance. Things didn't go our way, but we'll be in for Tuesday’s game [against Welling United] and that's a big game for us.”

Smith, a scorer in the 2-1 fourth qualifying round win over Havant & Waterlooville which booked Friday’s historic tie, has found a remarkable eye for goal recently with four efforts in Dulwich’s last five matches. He had little doubt before the game that he’d continue his run in front of the BBC cameras.

“It felt good. I did say to a few people that if I was playing I had to score. I've scored a few recently and hopefully it can continue.

“We did ourselves proud. The third goal killed us a little bit, but other than that with the other goals we probably made mistakes that gave them the opportunity to score. Credit to them, they were clinical.

“That's something we need to look at and take on board. That when we get

chances, because we do create a lot, we put them away. That's what opposition teams are doing to us at the minute.”

Attention immediately switched back to the league, where Hamlet have not won since August. Rose’s side drew 0-0 at Welling United on Tuesday night.

They sit in sixteenth place in National League South, twelve points off the play-off positions, but Smith believes that a promotion push should still be the objective.

He said: “Our aims are same as they've always been. We want to be in and around the play-offs, if not more.

“Obviously that's a big ask given our results so far, but the play-offs aren't out of reach, especially with the ability and the players that we've got. It's up to us now to put the performances in to get back up there.”

Smith, 31, hopes Friday’s euphoric occasion can inspire that upsurge in form.

He added: “I've played in the FA Cup many a time but for the younger boys it was a good occasion.

“We always get big crowds and some of them will want more days like that.

If they do then we need to start putting points on the board.”

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET still haven’t won in the league since August after drawing 0-0 at Welling United on Tuesday night.

The Hamlet were facing a team that hadn’t scored in four games but couldn’t make their own breakthrough. Despite that long run without a National League South victory, the Hamlet have only lost two of their last ten games in all competitions.

The hosts had the chance to go ahead through former Dulwich star Nathan Green, but goalkeeper Charlie Grainger denied him.

Ben Dempsey fired a volley over and then Montel Agyemang saw his shot saved by Grainger as Welling started well.

Former Wings defender Richard Orlu blocked Korrey Henry’s effort before Agyemang curled wide.

Another ex-Hamlet player, Sanchez Ming, then raided forward from rightback but again found Grainger in resilient form.

After surviving that pressure the visitors almost went ahead in firsthalf injury-time as Jeffrey Monakana crossed for Danny Mills – another player facing his former club – but

the striker’s header rebounded off the angle of crossbar and post.

It was a game dominated by former players. Anthony Cook, who joined Welling from Dulwich in the summer, was next to test Grainger and the goalkeeper again responded impressively to keep the score level.

Green could only find the side-netting from 25 yards but Dulwich started to gain the upper hand and Ade Yusuff perhaps should have found the target when well-placed instead of shooting off-target.

Hamlet midfielder Dominic Vose picked out the unmarked Lewis White at the back post but the former Millwall winger dragged his shot wide.

Welling defender Rob Swaine had to make an excellent last-ditch headed clearance to deny Mills what seemed would be a simple finish at the back post.

Welling had the last chance to snatch the three points when Theo Widdrington lined up an ambitious free-kick from 35 yards, but he sent his effort over the bar.

Rose's side are at home to Billericay this Saturday. Kick-off is 3pm.

Meanwhile, the Hamlet have been drawn at home to Chippenham in the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy, with the tie to be played on Saturday, November 23.

Two from two for Lynn Fish fail Erith Challenge

LYNN ABC had two fighters competing at the London Military Show last weekend – and came away with two victories.

FISHER WERE involved in just their fourth penalty shootout since reforming in 2009 – but came out on the wrong side of the result against Erith Town on Tuesday night.

First up in ‘The Battle of London’ was Arif Shodunke competing in his first-ever bout.

He was up against Kane Cameron from the London Military. It was a closely-fought contest and Shodunke boxed excellently to come away with a split-decision win. The return of that bout will be on Lynn’s show on November 25 at the Royal Lancaster Hotel.

Henry Tootal was then in action against Jermaine Gayle, also from London Military.

It was Tootal’s second bout in as many weeks.

Gayle came out strongly in the first round putting Tootal on the back foot. But the Lynn fighter soon got the measure of his opponent and his boxing skills took him to a unanimous points win.

Coach Terry Pearson said: “I was so pleased with the performances of both boxers.

“Henry showed much improvement from his bout only a couple a weeks ago.

He will also be competing in our show in November.”

Seventh heaven for Menace Peckham Town 7-0 AFC Croydon Athletic Development PECKHAM TOWN made it fourteen goals in just two cup games this season as they defeated AFC Croydon Athletic Development 7-0 last weekend.

There was a poignant moment before kick-off when both captains held up a ‘Non League 4 Grenfell’ banner in solidarity with those who lost their lives in the tragedy in June 2017. A minute’s silence was also impeccably observed with this being the nearest fixture to Armistice Day. .

Youssef Bouimane fired the hosts ahead after a superb run. It was 2-0 on the half-hour mark as Marcus Black beat the offside trap to finish.

Herve Mbongue put Town further ahead when he curled a free-kick into the top corner before Jay Virgo bagged a ten-minute hat-trick to put the tie to bed.

First, he converted a cross from the left with a simple finish into the top corner. Virgo was then alert to head home following a shot from Mbongue that hit the bar. Virgo completed his treble with a lob into an empty net from the edge of the box.

Mbongue finished the scoring with his second.

It got even worse for the visitors as they were reduced to eight men following two red cards and the sin-binning of their goalkeeper for dissent.

Peckham boss Mary Phillip said: “I thought it was a controlled, disciplined performance by us against tricky, youthful opponents.

“They were full of energy as expected from a full-time under-23 side, but the Kent County League Premier is a good level and we really showed what we are capable of.

“Our immediate focus is now on Southern Counties East Football League side Kent Football United who await us in the next round in two-week’s time.”

Fisher pay the penalty

The Fish fell behind to Danny Gannon’s eighthminute goal in their SCEFL Challenge Cup secondround clash at St Paul’s in Rotherhithe.

It looked like the visitors would go through in normal time before Chris Lockwood equalised in the last minute for the hosts.

Fisher lost 5-3 on penalties as they exited the competition.

Fisher are back in SCEFL Premier Division action on Saturday when they host Corinthian at St Paul’s.

Ajay Ashanike’s Fish are fifteenth in the table with fourteen points from fourteen games.

Lancers stay top after Faversham win

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk SOUTHWARK RUGBY cemented their position at the top of the Shepherd Neame Kent 1 table and gained revenge for their last-minute cup defeat back in April by defeating Faversham 31-8 last weekend.

The bonus-point win keeps the Lancers four points clear of both Cranbrook and Kings College who play each other this weekend.

Faversham opened the scoring and found themselves 8 -7 up in the first quarter of the match,

but Southwark composed themselves to score 24 unanswered points with two tries from captain Sam Lamont and one apiece from Marcus Bedson and Mike Wilkinson adding to the one from Pete Horan earlier in the match.

Whitstable are the next visitors to the Cage and Southwark will be looking for maximum points as the seaside club have struggled so far this season, finding themselves just one place from the foot of the table.

GARY ROWETT became the first Millwall manager to win his first two home games in charge since Dennis Wise sixteen years ago to the month, as Charlton must be wondering what kind of hex their neighbours have over them.

With this game close to petering out into a stalemate and most energy looking like it had already been spent, both sets of fans would have been reflecting a draw was probably a fair result.

But Millwall have a not-so-secret 6ft 6ins attacking weapon and Rowett sent for him with four minutes left of a game that had become a real slugfest.

One of the criticisms of Neil Harris was that he made perceived negative substitutions. Accompanying Matt Smith onto the pitch last Saturday was Aiden O’Brien as Millwall camped

for the last few minutes near their opponents’ goal.

Defenders know where Smith is going to be at corners. They know he’s one of the best headers of a ball in the division. They know if the delivery is anywhere near him then it’s likely he’s going to make contact with the cross.

But knowing all that and actually stopping it are two different things.

Smith tracked the flight of the ball, as Naby Sarr, detailed to mark him, must have felt like a worried skier hearing the rumblings on the slopes behind him. For Smith, Sarr was a trifling inconvenience. Smith met the ball flush, powering his header past Charlton goalkeeper Dillon Phillips. It was his fourth goal of the season, which have gained Millwall eight points.

Cue pandemonium in three stands and utter dejection in one. On the final whistle Charlton’s official Twitter account tweeted: “It never changes.”

March 9, 1996. Addicks fans must be sick of that date and the next time they will get the chance to end the run of eleven games without a win over their neighbours will be April 4, 2020.

Smith has the feel of a cult hero among Lions fans. But it’s worth recalling what he told the News earlier in the season. However thrilling his impact last weekend was, he didn’t join Millwall to be a last-20-minute man – or last-four-minute man.

Smith was signed by Harris to finally be the main man after the majority of his previous clubs used him off the bench.

“The fact that I was so wanted was a big thing,” Smith said. “As a striker to feel valued you get that extra spring in your step when you’ve got that belief and confidence behind you. That was

the biggest pull factor.

"Obviously playing in a team that suits my style of play is paramount. I think in modern-day football a lot of managers are going away from the two-up-front mentality. The more direct play is lost on some, my style of play can be a little bit of love/hate. So to come into an environment where they want to get the best out of me, they want to play to my strengths, was a big attraction.”

Harris is gone and Smith has yet to start in three games under Rowett.

And reading into the Lions boss’s comments after the game, it doesn’t appear that Rowett sees Smith as a regular starter. Certainly it has been notable that there is not the same number of long diagonals from Jake Cooper up to the strikers under Rowett.

“All you want is good balls into the box,” Rowett said. “It’s a fine line because sometimes with Matt’s natural game you lose a little bit of intensity and it allows the opposition a little bit more of a chance to come at you.

“But if you can get balls into the box at that stage of the game he’s fantastic.

You see it in training when you’re doing a crossing and finishing session he hardly ever misses. Anywhere within ten yards he’s such a clinical finisher with his head, he’s such an intelligent guy. He picks up good positions.”

Whether he starts or gate-crashes the action from the bench, Smith has endeared himself to Millwall fans.

At the other end of the pitch Bart Bialkowski is building a bit of a cult

reputation of his own. He had already produced several superb saves this season but topped that last Saturday.

He did benefit from a touch of fortune when he dived to his right to try to save Josh Cullen’s shot that skipped off the wet turf. The shot came off Bialkowski’s arm and up onto the crossbar before the goalkeeper palmed the ball away.

There was nothing lucky about his next save, which was pure instinct and the result of repetition of the same scenario on the training ground. In first-half added-time, Macauley Bonne must have thought after putting leather to ball it was a foregone conclusion the next action would be the net bulging.

But that was without reckoning with Bialkowski’s lightning-quick reflexes to tip the ball over the bar.

Bialkowski then tipped over Darren Pratley’s effort six minutes after the break but the stopper’s resistance was broken by Jonathan Leko, whose shot from the resulting corner deflected in.

Millwall had been in control early on. There was a penalty shout in fifth minute when Jed Wallace’s shot appeared to strike the arm of Jason Pearce. Moments later Pearce fouled Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, Shaun Williams curled in a lovely free-kick, and Shaun Hutchinson nodded home his second goal of the season.

Millwall threatened to run amok in those early stages. Mahlon Romeo fired in an effort from 20 yards that Phillips pushed away and Wallace, in pretty much a free role, was running the

visitors ragged.

But Charlton have made an impressive start to life back in the Championship, under a manager in Lee Bowyer who appears to be tactically good and has recruited well.

Charlton gained control of the game for a large part of it. They had those chances and the woodwork and Bialkowski’s excellence denied them.

After the Addicks scored it felt then that there would only be one winner.

But Millwall gradually regained territorial control, and Phillips produced an excellent save of his own from Ben Thompson’s left-footed halfvolley from twelve yards.

In truth, Charlton had done enough for a draw and if Millwall fans are thinking about getting carried away with two wins in Rowett’s first three games they should consider that, really, only the first half against Stoke and the opening 20 minutes last Saturday have the Lions performed impressively. The rest has been quite bitty and there is a lot of work to be done over the international break.

One area of focus should be defence.

For all that Bialkowski has impressed, the reason he’s had to make such good saves is because the side have been giving up good chances to opponents.

Millwall have kept just one clean sheet in their last thirteen league games.

But that won’t worry any Millwall fan too much for now, as they bask in having the bragging rights stay in SE16 – at least until April.

Where there’s a Will there’s a way EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk SHAUN WILLIAMS could have been forgiven for thinking that it just wasn’t meant to be.

Earlier in his career, after two clubs he played for went bust, it seemed a career as a professional footballer wasn’t fated for him.

The second time it happened, Williams, in need of a job to pay the bills, sold copies of the Herald, a daily newspaper, at the side of the road, getting up before dawn on freezing Dublin mornings.

Williams, 33, played for Drogheda United and Sporting Fingal in the League of Ireland but in 2010, at the age of 24, he was out of work.

He had been named Players Football Association of Ireland young player of the year, but there’s nowhere you can cash that in when bills arrive through the letterbox.

Remarkably, despite never having played overseas – where, really, Irish players have to go to make a decent living – and given his precarious situation, Williams turned down a three-and-a-half year contract offer from Glasgow Celtic.

It wasn’t until March 2011, more than four months after his last senior competitive game, that he joined MK Dons. He was named their player of the year in the 2012-13 season.

Williams has played 283 games in English football and is now an Ireland international. It’s all a far cry from those uncertain days in 2010.

The News spoke to Williams last week and asked him what were the best and worst jobs he had after matters outside his hands in football threatened to wreck his dream.

“The worst was probably selling newspapers on the side of the road,” he said. “I was at Drogheda and they went into administration. I’d literally no job so that was the easiest thing to do. Me and my best mate who was at Drogheda at the time as well had bills to pay. You have to live and that was the easiest thing we could have done.

“I couldn’t do it for that long, too many early mornings.

“The best? Probably barman. I worked in a few bars. I worked in Gibneys [in seaside town Malahide in north Dublin] and closing was obviously the best time, drinking the bar!

“It was my local area and if I went back now I’d still know everyone there.

I started off collecting glasses and you gradually get moved up.

“I’m not saying I’ve had it the hard way but I’ve been at two teams that folded.

You lose your job straightaway. I’ve had to do all sorts of jobs just to make ends meet.

“Maybe if you have it a bit younger you could kind of take your foot off the gas a little bit. I know the price of a pound, basically.

“I was at Fingal and because it was a summer season me and my missus were going to Thailand for four weeks, travelling and that. I came back for preseason and the club folded.

“There’d been a bid from Celtic for me and they turned it down. I was thinking, ‘why are they turning the money down?’ and about four days later they folded.

“I thought, ‘what’s going on here? That money could have helped.’ I had no club, no job, again.

end. He was here for a long time.

“He was amazing. My youngest, he was ill a year-and-a-half ago. His daughter had been through the same thing when she was younger so he said, ‘take as long as you want, make sure the family is right’.

“Myself, and I know my missus, can’t speak highly enough of him.”

Watching the strain on Harris hasn’t put Williams off coaching or managing.

He completed his Uefa B Licence last summer (the third of five coaching badges) with his Millwall team-mate Alex Pearce and Ireland team-mate Seamus Coleman.

Williams explained how he is now thinking like a coach. “[Last week] I was actually taking down a few drills that we’ve done. That was the first time I’d done that. My missus was like, ‘what are you doing?’

“We got an app when we were doing the coaching and it allows you to do anything. You have a pitch and you can put mannequins, cones, whatever on it. I’m just picking up little bits now as I go along.

“It ain’t just turn up when we turn up, there’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes that none of us could even imagine the amount of stuff they have to do. Analysis, tactics, opposition, training, dealing with people’s needs.

Williams knows all about that.

“I didn’t know what to do, to be fair, my head was all over the place. Celtic came back in again with a new offer and I had nothing to do with the money they were going to pay for me. I turned it down. It was for three-and-a-half years and the

When more experienced players are interviewed their views on things around the game, away from their own personal experience, are often sought.

Williams was one of the most important players in former boss Neil Harris’ side. It was Williams’ cross in the 2017 League One play-off final against Bradford that was flicked on by Lee Gregory for Steve Morison to score the winner and send the Lions into the Championship.

Millwall finished eighth the following season but the last campaign was difficult as Harris just steered the club to safety.

But the strain told and Harris stepped away in early October. Did Williams know Harris was feeling the pressure of the role?

“At the age I am now you can recognise

McCarthy joined the Lions from Wycombe in the summer, with Fred Onyedinma moving the other way.

“He has split the cartilage in his toe so because it’s an awkward position it probably looks like he’s going to be out for maybe about six weeks,” Rowett said. “So it’s a disappointment, but that’s what happens.”

“All I can say is we’ve got really good options and Matt has a massive part to play in that. And I know it’s a little bit contrived to talk about finishers, you have it with Eddie Jones in rugby union, but it is important.

Archer targets Boro switch

DERBY MATCH-WINNER Matt Smith said it was a “really satisfying feeling” to score an injury-time goal against Charlton last weekend.

Substitute Smith headed home Jed Wallace’s corner to give Gary Rowett’s side the win.

“It was a great feeling and no less than the lads deserved,” Smith said. “We came out of the blocks flying and were really impressive in the first ten to fifteen minutes. We scored a great goal, but then Charlton posed a lot of problems, particularly at the back end of the first half and the beginning of the second.

But the team dug deep and played some impressive stuff themselves.

“As the game wore on, I thought there would only be one winner. Fair play to the manager, he rung the changes and got us the three points. It’s a really satisfying feeling to get the winner in a local derby, in that manner as well.”

“We’ve had really good impacts from the bench so far and it’s really important to have substitutes that can go and win you the game. The last ten minutes in some ways are often more important than the first 80.

“You’ve got the likes of Alex Pearce, whom I know well, chomping at the bit to play. He’s been brilliant in training, brilliant around the place. He hasn’t started yet but he adds so much value to the squad.

“That’s how we see all of the players.

Matt showed his value off the bench and that was fantastic.”

Rowett has had a whirlwind month since replacing Neil Harris. He has already seen another Championship manager walk away from the job, with Neil Warnock leaving Cardiff on Monday.

Rowett explained how he deals with the pressure.

“The first thing you have to try and do is separate the emotion from what the job you’re trying to do is,” Rowett said.

“It’s really difficult nowadays with social media and with the press attention that any Championship side gets.

“Today’s society is also so instant. You lose a game you’re under pressure; you win a game and everything is great.

“You have to try and find a middle ground where you try to be methodical and not get involved in the other stuff.

That’s the first thing.

“The second thing is you have to have some sort of downtime as well. It can be 24/7 and of course it is. But occasionally you need time to do something away from it that you enjoy doing, to get away from football for just a moment.

“That’s what I try to do. I’m out running or spending time with my family. I try not to be a football manger and try to be normal. That helps me, though it is a challenge because it’s a demanding job.

“But, listen, it’s no more demanding than most other jobs. Although in most other jobs you don’t get 20,000 people calling you an idiot if it’s not going well for you!”

Archer has surprisingly been without a club since he was released by Millwall in the summer.

Archer, 26, has already trained with Southend and Aston Villa as his search for a new club continues. Jonathan Woodgate’s Middlesbrough are struggling in 22nd place in the Championship table with just thirteen points from sixteen games. Boro have conceded 21 goals so far, one fewer than Millwall, as Woodgate and his assistant Robbie Keane come under pressure. Archer joined Millwall from Tottenham in 2015 and went on to play 166 games for the club. But he lost his place in the side last season, with questions over his attitude. He reportedly left The Den after being dropped for a game against Swansea. Archer’s contract was not renewed at the end of the season.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett hopes Bart Bialkowski will remain with Millwall for the season – but says the club will plan for the “worst-case scenario”.

Polish international goalkeeper Bialkowski signed on a season-long loan from Ipswich in the summer, but the Tractor Boys have the option of accepting bids for him in January.

That could mean the Lions losing one of their best performers this season, if they decide not to go into a bidding war for a permanent deal for the stopper.

Millwall had set up a £900,000 move for Bialkowski in the last transfer window, before his medical showed

up an issue connected to an old knee injury.

The two clubs renegotiated terms, but there is no agreement for the deal to become permanent.

Bialkowski, 32, became Millwall’s first-choice goalkeeper after Frank Fielding tore his quad muscle on the opening day of the season against Preston.

Then-Lions boss Neil Harris was forced into the loan market to cover for Fielding’s loss, with Luke Steele joining from Nottingham Forest.

But Steele’s deal is only until January, when Millwall hope Fielding will be back in the first-team fold.

An added complication would be Ipswich accepting a bid for Bialkowski, who will leave the League One club in 2020.

That could leave Millwall searching

Lions could lose keeper in January if Ipswich sell for two goalkeepers in the next transfer window. Rowett is already stretched in defence with Jason McCarthy injured and the Millwall boss has hinted that he wants added cover in certain positions.

Millwall also have Ryan Sandford, but the 20-year-old goalkeeper has yet to make his senior competitive debut and is not thought of as a potential firstteam player this season.

“I’ve spoken to the club about one or two things but I don’t know the precise details of the agreement,” Rowett said.

“He’s a player that has done really well for us so far, he’s made some really important saves. The aim moving forward would be that he doesn’t have to make quite so many important saves. That would be our ideal plan, defensively.

“But I think as in any position you plan for the worst-case scenario which is making sure you have options in the building but also making sure you have options in the recruitment market.

“At the moment, until something like that happens, it’s something that we have to plan for but we hope we won’t need to worry about.

“That’s something I’m sure the club will deal with when the time comes.”

Newspaper reports earlier this week claimed Cardiff had contacted Harris to replace Neil Warnock, who stepped down on Monday after the Bluebirds’ 1-0 defeat to Bristol City the previous day.

Harris resigned as Lions manager on October 3 and said in a radio interview earlier this month that he was ready to return to the game.

That could be with his former club, as they were hopeful earlier this week of announcing a replacement for Warnock, 70, before this weekend.

Ironically, if Harris gets the job his first game will be at Charlton after the international break.

Harris, 42, played three games on loan at Cardiff in 2004, starting once and scoring in a 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United. He was the longest-serving manager in the division before leaving Millwall.

Warnock leaves with Cardiff fourteenth in the Championship table, level on points and a place above the Lions on goal difference.

As we were going to press Cardiff were hopeful of making a quick appointment.

Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman said: "I think he [owner Vincent Tan] wants someone younger with a more offensive type of manager. The process is ongoing on at the moment, we're down to a very small number of names. I'll be very surprised if we don't announce something within the next 72 hours, certainly by the weekend."

Millwall travel to Cardiff on Boxing Day.
