MPs in Danger: Coyle carries an alarm over death threats as harman reports on abuse Exclusive

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Harriet Harman says the abuse of MPs has got so bad it is now a “threat to our democracy” as Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle reveals his team have been attacked and spat on and he carries a personal alarm after receiving death threats.

A report published this month by the House of Commons Human Rights Committee describes how reported intimidation and abuse is just the “tip of the iceberg” as many members suffer in silence or are reluctant to file complaints.

Evidence heard by its authors showed how women MPs and particularly those from minority backgrounds experience the most abuse.

Shockingly, black women politicians are nearly twice as likely as their white peers to be abused on Twitter.

Stats from the Met back up the claims, with Cressida Dick describing the current situation as “unprecedented”.

In 2017, there were 151 crimes reported by MPs across the country, increasing by 126 per cent in 2018 to 342.

From January to April alone in 2019, there were 152 such crimes, only counting as a fraction of the total number of incidents of which police were made aware.

Coyle says that although the abuse and threats he experiences pales in comparison to that of some colleagues, his team have been attacked - including being spat on - in their Jamaica Road office in Bermondsey.

On that occasion, the man responsible had to be wrestled to the ground in front of children during a weekly advice surgery, while staff called 999.

The office’s windows have been smashed, and he has been targeted at both work and his home address – including with death threats.

difference between aggressive campaigning and outright abuse,” he said.

“The bit that frightens me is anyone who threatens my daughter and my wife.”

The committee’s chair, Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman, said threats and abuse, often arising from political differences, were eroding British democracy.

“We cannot have a situation where many MPs are looking over their shoulder, keeping their head down, restricting their advice surgeries and reluctant to go on public transport on their own at night,” she said.

“Parliament is keen to get on with tackling other people’s problems but notoriously slow to address our own, fearing accusations that we’re feathering our own nest.

“And we’re rightly even more wary if it could be alleged that what we’re doing is against the public right to demonstrate, their freedom of expression and protest.

“There needs to be a zero tolerance of threats to MPs. That is not free speech. It’s a threat to our democracy”.

Coyle says his approach is not to feed “trolls” – many of whom are looking for a reaction But when it comes to the extremes of credible death threats and physical violence, there needs to be more clarity around what security is available to MPs as a matter of course, and who pays, he argues.

Harman’s report says online companies, such as social media giants, are failing to self-regulate, and recommended that parties take a strong line against any of their own members responsible.

The committee will also be scrutinising any new government legislation that could help prosecute offenders.

But the language among MPs themselves has also been questioned, after increasingly toxic levels of insult-hurling both in and outside the chamber.

Neil Coyle previously pledged he would tone down his vociferous twitter habit after complaints from the public – including stalwart Bermondsey Labour members – over his crude language.

But he had no truck with the notion and that MPs themselves are part of the problem.

“99.9% of people do not support the actions of thugs who think this is OK,” he said. “Just being a normal human being, you know the line.

“There’s disagreeing with my policies and then there’s telling me to die.”

Florence is selected to fight for Vauxhall Florence Eshalomi, the current Southwark and Lambeth Assembly Member at City Hall, has been selected as the Labour Party parliamentary candidate in Vauxhall, writes Josh Salisbury...

Ms Eshalomi was confirmed as the party’s candidate for the ultra-safe Labour seat after voting by party members concluded on Sunday.

The Brixton-born politician said she was “humbled beyond my wildest imagination,” to have been selected as the party’s choice of MP for the seat.

“I’m humbled beyond my wildest imagination to be selected as the new Vauxhall Labour Parliamentary candidate,” said Ms Eshalomi on social media.

“This doesn’t happen to girls like me but I promise to be a strong local voice for all residents in Vauxhall - I’m ready to fight for Remain & a UK Labour Government.”

Among those defeated in the race were Katy Clark, a former political secretary to Jeremy Corbyn, and Claire Holland.

Ms Clark was considered the preferred choice of the party’s left-wing Momentum slate, having secured the personal endorsement of John McDonnell.

Kate Hoey, Vauxhall’s current MP, has served the seat since 1989, and announced this summer that she would step down.

Despite her strongly-held pro-Brexit views being at odds with the 79 per cent of constituents who voted Remain in the 2016 referendum, Ms Hoey was returned at the 2017 election with a majority of more than 20,000 votes.

Ms Eshalomi’s victory was welcomed by MP Helen Hayes, who represents Dulwich and West Norwood.

“Huge congratulations to my friend Florence Eshalomi on being selected as the Labour candidate for Vauxhall,” she said.

“So glad Vauxhall Labour has a #Remain candidate to fight for one of the most pro-EU constituencies in the country.”

A General Election on December 12 is now a certainty, barring a block by the House of Lords, which is very unlikely.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey bar has become the world’s first to use facial recognition technology to make sure punters can’t skip queues when waiting for a pint.

The Underdog, on Crucifix Lane, was the first to trial the A.I. Bar, which scans the faces of those waiting to tell bar staff who is next in line for their order on October 8.

The tech, developed by firm DataSparQ, also lets thirsty punters know how long it will take them to be served via a display screen.

“We’re excited to be the first place in the world to have an A.I. powered bar,” said Sammy Forway, owner of The Underdog.

“We got a great response when we trialled it, everyone knew who was next and exactly how long they had to wait to get served.

“Being able to give customers this queuing clarity is really going to

help with our events during the busy Christmas party season, saving a lot of hassle for my staff and our drinkers.”

The brains behind the queuing system also say the tech helps with ID – as it scans the faces of punters and lets bar staff know in advance if they look under 25.

Also being developed is a ‘Face Tab’ feature, which would let customers link a bar tab to their face, so that no-one could put orders on their tab.

The Underdog hopes to use the tech at peak times, but under privacy law they must currently obtain consent from everyone inside the bar when it is being used.

However, privacy campaigners have lambasted what they call the use of repressive technology for a ‘gimmick’.

“The problem is that it normalises quite dangerous surveillance techniques … it’s quite privacy intrusive,” said Silkie Carlo, director of Big Brother Watch, a privacy lobby group.

“It’s not solving a problem that desperately needed solving.”

Powered by machine learning technology, the system works by displaying a live video of everyone queuing on a screen above the bar.

A number appears above each customer’s head, which represents their place in the queue.

Customers look up at the display to see where they are in the queue and how long the system estimates it will take until they get served.

Bar staff are then told who’s next. Staff also have an iPad or Android tablet which tells them who to serve next and if they should ask the customer for I.D.

The two new options at the Mayflower Pub in Rotherhithe Street are titled ‘Bollocks to Brexit’ and ‘Take Back Control’, the slogans of both the People’s Votes and Leave campaigns respectively.

The Remain-branded beer is a 3.7 per

cent Session IPA, in European Union colours of yellow and gold.

Meanwhile the Brexit-labelled beer is a 3.7 per cent bitter, with a union flag and British bulldog.

“New beers on draught. Which one is your fave?” said the pub announcing its new Brexit-range on social media on Friday.

“Definitely will try a pint of Take Back Control with my Steak and Ale pie when I return to The Mayflower Pub next month,” said customer Christopher Koch.

But another punter, Tom Chivers, quipped that the pub would be paying for the Take Back Control draught “for a very long time.”

A third punter wasn’t so confident the beers would heal divides, adding: “Can see a bar fight happening. I know I'm not paying for a pint from one of those pumps!”

The Mayflower is the oldest pub on the river Thames and takes its name from the ship which took the Pilgrims to the New World, which first set sail from Rotherhithe in 1620.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk In the first report from the formal inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire, which claimed 72 lives, Sir Martin Moore-Bick said lessons from Camberwell’s Lakanal House had not been learned.

Published this week, the report seriously criticises the London Fire Brigade, saying its planning for such an event was “gravely inadequate” as officers failed to respond to the building’s failure to contain the fire – as it should have – and change their stay put policy in response to the blaze’s rapid spread.

He highlights the time between 1.30am and 1.50am as a missed opportunity when lives could have been saved had an evacuation been launched.

“Severe failings” in the brigade’s response including lack of training and poor information relay between operators and crews, which led to “no overall picture of the speed or pattern of fire spread”.

Damningly, the report says operators “were not aware of the danger of assuming that crews would always reach callers, which was one of the important lessons that should have been learnt from the Lakanal House fire. As a result, they gave assurances which were not well founded.”

It concludes: “mistakes made in responding to the Lakanal House fire were repeated”.

Three women and three children – including a 20-day-old baby – perished in Lakanal House after a fire broke out on July 3, 2009. All had been told to stay put despite its quick advance.

The blaze engulfed part of the building, aided by a refurbishment that replaced materials with more flammable ones. An inquest in 2013 found the fire brigade’s information about the building was years out of date, and crews had not realised outside balconies acted as fire escapes.

After the Lakanal inquest, Coroner Judge Frances Kirkham wrote to the secretary of state for communities and local government, Eric Pickles, asking him to publish national guidance on the confusing “stay put” policy, review the safety of building materials, publish new safety guidance, and consider plans such as retrofitting sprinklers across high-rise blocks. Despite promises, no review came.

It is expected the second phase of the Grenfell inquiry will turn Sir Martin’s focus to government legislation and building regulations.

Bereaved families hope that criminal charges may finally be brought against those ultimately responsible for the cladding.

In a statement released upon the report’s publication on Wednesday morning, Sir Martin said there were: “Significant systemic failings in the organisation of the LFB, and how that it had failed to learn the lessons of the Lakanal House Fire; but at the same time I find that, following the refurbishment, the external walls of the building did not comply with the building regulations because they did not adequately resist the spread of fire over them.”

desperate appeal to keep modern slavery helpline open

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A modern slavery helpline that has identified thousands at risk of exploitation in just two years of operation will be forced to close down if it doesn’t raise £800,000 by the end of November.

Southwark had seventeen potential modern slavery victims referred to the authorities for help in last year, according to government figures. One was an adult, with the sixteen others all minors.

Children involved in modern slavery can be involved in forced drug trafficking, such as through county lines gangs. Other types of modern slavery include sexual slavery or unpaid, forced labour.

Gang masters are known to exploit the benefits system and their victims’ finances. Victims may also receive healthcare on the NHS and interact with people who – if they spot warning signs – could intervene.

The government has launched a new awareness campaign encouraging finance and health workers with concerns to call the modern slavery helpline, whose handlers can then refer cases for further investigation and support for potential victims.

But the charity that runs the helpline, Unseen, says it could close by the end of November due to lack of funding.

It needs to raise £800,000 before Christmas to stay open.

Unseen chief executive, Andrew Wallis OBE, said: “Without the Modern Slavery Helpline, thousands of men, women and children across the UK will remain enslaved and unseen.

“For thousands of people trapped in slavery, our helpline is the only way out. If the lines go dead, hope will die with them.”

The Home Office confirmed it was aware of the charity’s urgent need of funding, but stopped short of committing to meet the gap.

“Modern slavery is an abhorrent crime and one the Government

is committed to stamping out,” a spokesperson said.

“We are aware of Unseen’s situation and we are working with them to try to find a way forward.”

In London in 2018, the Met investigated 378 cases in total. Almost half involved exploited labour, mainly involving workers at car washes, nail bars, construction sites, farms and factories.

So far the helpline identified 15,000 at risk of exploitation since 2016, and currently handles around 250 calls a week.

Victims, and potential victims whose cases are being investigated, are offered a package of support including housing and counselling.

The charity has launched a public appeal, with posters placed across Southwark, including Newington Causeway, based on survivors’ stories.

The images show the types of lies they have been told by their abusers, and how deceptive outward appearances can be.

In May of this year, new legislation helped convict and sentence three gang members, including Michael Karemera, aged 25, from Lewisham, sentenced to five years behind bars for three counts of human trafficking.

He was part of a gang that exploited six victims, all aged between fourteen and nineteen, from south London, who were forced to carry and sell drugs across the country in a county lines operation.

One victim told the court when he tried to leave the gang, he was stripped naked and had a gun put in his mouth, threatening him with death if he didn’t comply.

kids’ groups beg council not to demolish their club house

£50,000 has been invested on the space in Burgess Park by a collection of community groups

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Burgess Park clubhouse is on course to be demolished despite a charity’s offer to take over the running costs and pay for refurbishment.

Vernon Neve-Dunn founded Southwark Tigers junior rugby club in 2000, as the first ever inner city junior rugby club in England.

At first they had nowhere to store their equipment or have a cup of tea, but soon took over an “empty and derelict” building opposite Chumleigh Gardens Café and turned it into their clubhouse.

In 2009 they spent £50,000 of their own money renovating the space, adding a kitchen and toilet, and making it secure, previously having paid no rent.

Neve-Dunn says the many charities that use the space operate as a collective and organise sharing it together – and want the council to hand over the reins.

Those to use it include Burgess Sports, also run by Vernon, which is an association of all the sports clubs in the park. Silverfit, 1st Place Nursery, Art in the park, and the Creation Trust also use the building.

As well as storing sport equipment, it provides somewhere groups to have tea and coffee, make food, and hold events.

A consultation took place about the future of Burgess Park, which Vernon said he understood would involve a redevelopment of the facility, but now

he’s been told after the demolition they will be moved into a new sports centre not yet under construction.

“We had an initial meeting about redevelopment - there are leaks in the roof that Burgess Sports have paid to fix - but then we found out the meeting was about removing the clubhouse completely,” he explained.

“It was a bit of a shock. The council said that in the new sports centre they are building there will be space for us, but this space is smaller than the clubhouse.

“It would be run by an operator, and we wouldn’t be able to store anything there overnight.

“We feel like we have been misled. We want a space that we can really develop, not just a table in a sports centre.

“We could be priced out. We need at least a kitchen, meeting space for 40-50 people and toilets; ideally with a café and bar.

“A space that we have some control over and where we can put down roots, and put up the pictures of the kids and their trophies.

“We are prepared to take over all running costs, everything, and have a sponsor lined up.

“We have already had an architect round and have some really exciting plans for the space, which has a little garden at the back we could make more use of.

“Hundreds of people use this space, and we are ready if we get the go ahead, but the council has basically said

DOUBLE MURDER suspect FOUND DEAD IN CUPBOARD

josh@southwarknews.co.uk The Peckham man suspected of the 2017 murder of a convicted sex offender, and also killing the offender’s daughter, was himself found dead inside a locked communal utilities cupboard only weeks later.

Police linked 37-year-old Nathaniel Henry to the strangling of convicted sex offender Noel Brown, and his daughter Marie, (both pictured, main), in early December 2017, after he was found dead inside a locked communal utilities cupboard at his Peckham Grove flats on New Year’s Eve of that year.

Mr Brown’s body had been found dismembered by officers at a Deptford flat, which the investigating officer described as unlike anything he had seen in his nearly three decades of policing.

Southwark Coroner’s Court heard on Monday how the 37-year-old double murder suspect was found by officers clothed inside a locked cupboard, which had tissue stuffed into the lock, with a blister pack of tablets, personal belongings and some food.

An autopsy recorded no sign of injuries on the body, the inquest found, while the medical cause of death was given as toxicology-related.

The Met’s DCI Simon Harding told the court that Henry, who was a basketball coach at Peckham’s Damilola Taylor Centre, was reported missing by his mother, after last being seen on December 5.

Later that evening “he sent a text message to a friend saying ‘I’m going to be missing this week. I’m not my usual self,’ DCI Harding said.

“When he was reported missing a search was conducted at his flat, and there was no sign of disturbance. The calendar in his flat had dates crossed out up to the 4th.”

The court heard that subsequent police searches for Henry – who had a history of depression and had been referred to the South London and Maudsley Trust for treatment – yielded no further clues to his whereabouts.

Henry’s flat at Peckham Grove’s South City Court, including the lake, but again could find no trace.

A further search was conducted of the grounds surrounding his flat on New Year’s Eve, after he had been missing for nearly a month.

“During the search, officers found the deceased in a locked cupboard in the ground floor which led to Nathaniel’s flat,” said DCI Harding “It’s quite a small cupboard, he was lying down, and he had a duvet covering his legs. He was well-clothed and had some of his personal effects with him.

“He had his phone, he had food which had a sell-by date of 6 December.

“He also had with him a blister pack of tablets.

“The cupboard had some tissues shoved into the lock, from the inside. The key

was found among the set of his own keys.

There was no sign of disturbance.”

DCI Harding also told the court: “There was a parallel investigation into a murder and Mr Henry was a suspect for that murder.”

Murdered Noel Brown – jailed in 1999 for sex offences – was found dismembered by police at his flat in Deptford’s New Butt Lane in early December 2017.

Officers think the killer, thought to be Henry, visited the flat multiple times to cut off parts of the arms and one of the legs from the 69-year-old’s corpse.

It is understood that Mr Brown’s missing body parts have not been found.

Detectives also believe Noel’s daughter Marie, a 41-year-old crèche worker at Nunhead’s Ivydale Primary, was at the wrong place at the wrong time and chanced upon her father’s killer – and that

Noel Brown, originally from Jamaica, lived in Deptford following his release from prison for sexual offences.

However, the Met’s DS Paul Monk said in the week following the murder probe that it was not “screaming out” as a motive and “nothing” in the eighteen years since the conviction suggested it was the murder motive.

He is said to frequent betting establishments in the area, but police also say there is no evidence the unemployed 69-year-old was killed because of a betting win.

Mother-of-two Marie Brown, 41, worked at Nunhead’s Ivydale Primary School as a crèche worker.

Following her death, she was described by family as “a calm, peaceful person – slow to anger and quick to forgive.”

Her two children are described as “her life”.

Ivydale Primary School also pays tribute to Ms Brown, who say they are devastated by the loss of a “valued member of our team.”

Father-of-three Nathaniel Henry was described on a nowdeleted GoFundMe page as “a true pillar of the community,” who loved to make a difference.

Children at the Damilola Taylor centre, where he worked as a mentor and basketball coach were said to be devastated by his death, which has left “a huge gaping hole.”

The 37-year-old was described by officers as slim, bald, and around six-feet tall, with a tattoo of a mallet on his right arm.

They later name him as their ‘significant’ suspect in the murder investigation, after his passing.

Senior Coroner Dr Andrew Harris concluded that the autopsy and toxicology evidence “all indicates there was no third party” in the 37-year-old Nathaniel Henry’s death.

“We know he had stresses and previous suicide attempts. He does lock himself in a cupboard, which does suggest that he does not want to be disturbed,” he said.

However Dr Harris said he would not record a suicide verdict and instead recorded a ‘drug-related’ verdict after speaking of a “degree of uncertainty” over whether Henry had intended to take tablets with the aim of ending his own life.

“I record my condolences to the family and all those involved in the circumstances surrounding his death,” he added.

What does last week’s deal mean?

After a long-running and bitter battle, which saw a war-of-words between NHS England and pharma company Vertex, both sides have finally agreed a pricing deal.

Despite the UK having the second-highest prevalence of Cystic Fibrosis in the world,Vertex's drugs weren't available on the NHS due to a row over the price being charged.

The current deal affects three of Vertex’s current products, Orkambi, Symkevi and Kalydeco, which improve lung functions for many Cystic Fibrosis sufferers.

While not all are eligible for the treatment depending on certain gene mutations, the NHS expects up to 5,000 patients in England to take

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Millwall-mad youngster will finally get access to life-saving Cystic Fibrosis drugs on the NHS after a long-running price battle was resolved last week.

Finley Shoults, 9, is among the thousands in the UK who could now benefit from wonderdrug Orkambi for their condition, which causes a thick build-up of mucus on the lungs, shortening life expectancy.

A bitter price dispute between the NHS in England and the manufacturer Vertex was resolved on Thursday – meaning Finley and others like him could get the drugs in just a month’s time.

Finley’s dad Wayne, who alongside other Millwall fans affected by CF had demanded the drugs be made available in a News front page appeal, said the family were “absolutely over the moon.”

“It’s been a long time coming,” he said. “It’ll be life-changing for Finley. Not just for him, but for everyone who has CF. “It’ll just be nice for him to be able to compete with his peers. I don’t know exactly what impact it will have but it should deal with the underlying issues with his lungs.”

Wayne first found out the news via text from his wife Dannielle, both of whom are 35, while he was with Finley at a ball-pit.

“I just sobbed to myself in the corner. It was one of those ‘remember where you were’ moments,” said the doting dad, who grew up in Walworth with his wife. “It’s been very emotional these past couple of days.”

But, he added, Finley wasn’t quite so moved:

“In typical Finley style, he said, ‘Oh that’s great’ and just wandered off!” he laughed.

“We’ve had a lot of friends and family contact us over the past twenty-four hours with the reaction, but Finley, he’s just so blasé about it all.”

At the moment the footie-obsessed youngster has to take a plethora of drugs to deal with the genetic condition in addition to daily physio exercises.

Earlier this year, he was in hospital for over a month with serious lung infections – which may have been avoided if Orkambi had been available on the NHS sooner, the Shoults family say.

“We don’t know if he’s completely over the three bugs he had while he was in hospital,” Wayne, who now lives in Welling, said.

“But the past two months he’s been back to normal, he’s been right-as-rain.”

The youngsters’ classmates also decided to write the Prime Minister to ask why Orkambi hadn’t been made available on the NHS after seeing Wayne’s appeal.

Despite the ups-and-downs of the past year, the youngster has not let anything get in the way of doing what he wants to do.

He has recently taken part in a big shoot with TX Maxx, to be shown in the States, and has also done a voice-over for a Christmas ad he took part in last year.

But Wayne warned: “Orkambi is not a cure, so fundraising will still have to go ahead – and the deal is only for two years so we might have to do this all over again.”

The agreement also crucially begins to open access on the NHS for new CF drugs by Vertex when they are developed, including Trikafta, which could be suitable for a wider range of people suffering from the condition.

“The deal is great value for money for the NHS, and crucially, will improve thousands of lives,” said Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

David Ramsden, chief executive of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, added: “I want to thank people with cystic fibrosis, their families and everyone who has been part of this campaign for their persistence and determination to keep on fighting.”

Elephant murder charges

Jose Perez Fana, aged 30, and Kelvin Plata Fana, 22, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday, October 25, charged with

murder and GHB with intent.

The pair were extradited from Antwerp in Belgium and remanded to police custody in connection with Bertran-Tavarez’ murder, and the serious injury of a 25-yearold man, at Elephant and Castle underground station on September 1.

Both are from Cowbridge Lane in Barking.

Teenager sent to Pentonville after scaling The Shard

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The family of a young stuntman jailed for climbing The Shard have called for the “unfair and unjust” punishment to be overturned.

Then 19-year-old George King made headlines across the world when he scaled the 1000ft skyscraper without safety gear in just 45 minutes in July.

But in the process the daring free climber broke a High Court order banning him from the climb, and he was jailed for six months this week for contempt of court.

Now his brother, Toby, has started a petition for the twenty-year-old to be freed – and says despite assurances in court he would be sent to a young offenders’ institution, he has actually been locked up in Pentonville, a Category B adult jail.

“It’s completely unfair and unjust that George, who’s achieved so much in his life, has been locked away in prison – not in a young offenders’, but in an adult prison,” older brother Toby told the News.

“He broke the law, but we disagree with him being sentenced to prison.

He does not need to be cooped up with people who have committed terrible crimes – it’s outrageous.

“It [the ruling] was trying to make an example out of him. It’s been horrible for the whole family.”

George’s – who is originally from Oxford but had been living in east London before the climb –has not been permitted contact with his relatives, to check how he is doing, Toby added.

Loved ones are also concerned that Pentonville is “known for violence and overcrowding.”

The Shard’s management company had welcomed Monday’s ruling at the High Court.

Real Estate Management Ltd said it “no option... than to secure the injunction” against George’s climbing of The Shard.

It added that it hoped the sixmonth sentence would deter other

prospective climbers, and force them “to recognise the great dangers that these actions pose to the public, emergency services and themselves.”

The News has contacted The Shard for further comment.

The petition started by 23-year-old Toby two days ago to overturn the sentence has now received more than 2,500 signatures under the slogan ‘#justice4george’.

“We’ve had a lot of support from people who think it’s not a justified sentence,” said George’s brother.

The free-climber is well-known for his feats, which include climbing the world’s largest wall without safety equipment and running ultramarathons, alongside personal training and charity work.

The 20-year-old had been working for Centrepoint, the homelessness charity, before being jailed.

“This is a man that clearly cares and has a really good moral compass,” said Toby. “His philosophy is to ‘follow your passions’.

“He really should be celebrated as a hero.”

According to the Sun newspaper on Friday, the news anchor –a regular sight on the BBC News at Ten – was awoken by the intruder shortly before 6am and rushed to confront them.

The paper said a burglar allegedly escaped by stealing the star’s Mercedes before 58-year-old Edwards could catch up with them.

But afterwards the BBC star took aim at what he called “misleading press reports” and denied chasing the burglar away.

“Just for the record — following some misleading (shock!) press reports,” he said on social media. “Yes we had a burglary. No, I didn’t chase the burglar.

urgent HELP needed for our war HEROES

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Help for Heroes, the charity which provides lifelong assitance to veterans and exservice personnel, urgently need volunteers across Southwark.

On Wednesday, December 4 and Thursday, December 5, the charity will be holding Christmas collections across London, including at London Bridge station.

But the charity needs volunteers to give up an hour or two to help collect money for wounded or sick veterans.

Paula Knott, a RAF veteran, will be volunteering on both days after sustaining a leg injury which saw her medically discharged from the air force.

“Almost 40,000 people have been medically discharged from the Armed

Forces in the past twenty years, many of whom – like me – will have struggled to transition into civilian life,” she said.

“It’s not just that you’re suffering from mental or physical wounds but that, overnight, you lose your identity and self respect.”

This year’s appeal, which coincides with International Volunteer Day on December 5, is the fourth time the charity will be having Christmas collections in TfL stations.

They have since become a major source of funding for the charity, and often feature appearances by the Invictus Choir, veterans, and charity mascot, Hero Bear.

Detailed plans will now be drawn up for proposals including a new entrance on Windsor Walk, increased canopy cover so people can make more use of the full platform length, more platform screens, and changing the layout of benches to free up space.

The government department has pledged £604,000 and it is expected that, depending on planning permission, detailed designs could be ready by July 2021.

Denmark Hill is one of London’s busiest stations and it is hoped the redesign can help reduce daily congestion problems and delays.

But now Southwark Cathedral’s cat, Doorkins Magnificat, has gone into partial retirement and will no longer

According to Network Rail the station is now busier than several national interchanges - including Milton Keynes Central, Leicester and Southampton Central, partly due to the orbital overground route linking services with Clapham Junction to the old East London Line opening in 2012.

More than six million was ploughed into improving the station in 2013, including step-free access, a new ticket office, a coffee shop, and accessible toilets.

Local MP Harriet Harman said: “People using Denmark Hill station face almost daily dangerous overcrowding and delays to their journey.

“For years local residents, the SE5 Forum, Southwark Council, Florence Eshalomi AM, Helen Hayes MP and I have pressed the government and Network Rail, to make the station safe and fit to serve staff, patients and visitors to the two world-leading

Councillor Richard Wingfield, the cabinet member responsible for the environment at Southwark Council, said: “Getting the station to a condition where it is better able to cope with the demand placed on it has been a subject close to the hearts of many local people and ward councillors for many years.”

Network Rail’s southern region director for investment, Paul Harwood, said the plans would now be taken forward with the council and both hospitals.

Concerns about transport were notably the most pressing issue raised by residents at two planning meetings earlier this month for the £3.3bn Masterplan earlier this month.

However, planning committee councillors unanimously approved British Land’s scheme – the largest in Southwark history – after being reassured by TfL that a package of transport measures would mitigate the impact of up to 3,000 new homes and 20,000 new jobs.

Caroline Pidgeon, the Liberal Democrat deputy chair of City Hall’s Transport Committee, grilled Mayor Khan on overcrowding at Mayor’s Question Time this month.

“Can you explain why TfL indicated to Southwark Council that the Canada Water Masterplan should go ahead, despite being a scheme that will add 20-30,000 additional commuters into the area and approximately 3,500 new residents?” she asked.

“With tube and Overground services already operating at capacity and predicted to continue to do so by 2031, how will these additional passengers be accommodated?”

“We shall miss you in Southwark Cathedral, but I know you will be very comfortable. Thank you for being such a lovely friend to all of us.”

Doorkins was adopted by Church staff after she began visiting for food between Christmas and New Year in 2008. She decided that she wanted to live inside the Cathedral – and soon became a famous mascot for the SE1 institution.

She has had books written about her, has entertained Queen Elizabeth and has even had poems written for her.

Staff at the church describe her as “quite elusive”, but she could regularly be seen walking in front of the altar during a service, or napping in the Churchyard if the sun is out.

Last year a stone corbel was unveiled at the Cathedral for Doorkins, which will last for hundreds of years.

But Mayor Khan responded: “Firm plans do exist for an increase in capacity to cater for the development.

“This conclusion was supported by Southwark officers and members of the Council’s planning committee, who voted unanimously to approve the development.”

Among the measures contained in the Plan to deal with transport overcrowding include increased capacity at Surrey Quays, more staff at Canada Water station and two new bus routes.

Deptford murder Scotland Yard has launched a murder probe after finding the body of a 46-year-old woman in a Deptford flat, writes Josh Salisbury...

Officers were called to the flat in McMillan Street, SE8, on Monday last week to respond to welfare concerns for an occupant.

They found the body of woman, identified as 46-year-old Zoe Orton, at the address. Her next-of-kin are aware.

A post-mortem the following gave the cause of death as “neck compression.” Now Homicide detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime unit are leading the investigation.

No arrests have been made in Zoe’s murder.

The seven arrested in the Clinton Ebvota murder investigation remain on bail as police continue their investigation, writes Katherine Johnston...

Currently bailed are two fifteen-yearolds from Camberwell, a fourteen-yearold from Southwark, two teenagers from Stockwell aged seventeen and eighteen, a seventeen-year-old from Coulsdon and a seventeen-year-old from Streatham.

All were arrested earlier this month on suspicion of murder. As yet, no one has been charged by investigating officers. Six were arrested on Friday, October 18, with the seventh arrested on October 20.

Clinton (pictured) was fatally stabbed on Thursday, October 10, on Grimsel Path in Camberwell, behind Aberfeldy House in Brandon Estate.

A post-mortem gave Clinton’s cause of death as “multiple stab wounds”.

The murder probe is being led by detectives from the Specialist Crime Command.

In total police have made five arrests – four men and one woman in connection with the incident on Monday, October 21.

The woman, aged 36, was released without charge and the four men have been released under investigation. They were all arrested on suspicion of GBH and are aged seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, and 33.

Three adult men were found injured in and around Banfield Road in SE15 last Monday, at around 4.44pm.

Police confirmed this week none are believed to be in “life-threatening” conditions. After previously saying officers were unsure as to whether there were more people injured, a Met spokesperson told the News on Monday that no other victims had been traced.

A week can be a very long time in politics

Heading to the polls in December for the first winter election since 1974

T

he last few weeks have been a chaotic and unpredictable time in parliament, with the Queen’s speech, Boris Johnson’s Withdrawal Agreement Bill and votes on the next general election.

A week can be a very long time in politics, but as I write this column in advance of Thursday’s paper being printed, it seems that Boris Johnson has reneged on his ‘do or die’ pledge that the UK would leave the European Union on 31 October with or without a deal.

Johnson has form on broken promises – we know in Southwark that his promise not to close any police station without opening another was meaningless, as were his commitments not to prorogue parliament and to maintain environmental and employment standards as part of any Brexit deal.

It also seems likely that the country will be heading to the polls in December for the first winter election since 1974, with the opportunity for us all to have our say on this dreadful Tory government and the appalling impacts of the austerity that they and their Lib Dem partners have inflicted on our communities over the past decade.

I was delighted recently to receive the very strong endorsement of Labour Party members in my Dulwich and West Norwood constituency to fight the next election as Labour’s candidate and I am looking forward to setting out Labour’s vision for housing, school funding, the environment, investment in our youth services and ending the hostile environment, to the electorate both in my constituency and in the marginal seats which Labour needs to win in order to oust the Tories.

I will be fighting on my record of representing the strongly pro-Remain residents in my constituency and Labour’s commitment to a People’s Vote (in which I will campaign to Remain) to resolve the issue of Brexit once and for all, to build 100,000 truly affordable homes with secure tenancies every year by the end of the next Parliament, to deliver a fair tax system where big businesses and those who earn the most pay their fair share of taxes and for a truly transformational Green New Deal to tackle the climate emergency and deliver a fairer, greener future for us all.

You heard it on the grapevine This week, we report how the Mayflower in SE16 has unveiled a ‘Remain’ and ‘Leave’ Brexit beer options (see page 3).

In a similar vein, a Waterloo pub has denied that Brexit is in any way affecting its alcohol offerings.

Rumors have been stirring that the King’s Arms, in Roupell Street, had stopped serving 250ml measures of wine over Brexit.

But the operating manager tells us: “While I wish I knew how (and if?!)

Brexit will go, this is not the reason behind the recent menu change.”

A barman’s Brexit joke was seemingly taken too literally by customers, he says.

The pub is test-dropping the 250ml ‘large glass’ measure to gauge customer feedback ahead of a new wine menu.

The large glass measure could return he adds – which may be good news for those not too keen on Brexit going ahead.

Elmer the elephant’s dirty protest Readers will no doubt be aware of the ongoing community furore surrounding the regeneration of Elephant & Castle.

But an unlikely character has been drawn into the row: lovable children’s character, Elmer the patchwork Elephant.

A series of sculptures of Elmer were unveiled at Elephant Park earlier this year.

But it sparked accusations that developers were attempting to PR-wash a controversial scheme.

Now activists have been seen using the sculptures to place protest messages against the redevelopment, including: “Elmer says: ‘Keep me out of your social cleansing schemes’” and “Elmer says: ‘I don’t like rich f***s.’”

In case their anger was not already obvious, activists also left mock dung next to the Elephant.

“Fuckoffee ate my hamster” Bermondsey coffee shop Fuckoffee has come in for criticism this week, after one of its outlets reposted a tweet saying: “If I had a pound for every gender there is, I’d have two pounds and a loud of counterfeits.”

Its branch on Bermondsey Street is covered in LGBT flags, leading one person to ask: “Does your support of the [Trans] in LGBT only extend south of the river?”

What can you do to stop catastrophic climate breakdown?

reta Thunberg and the climate strikers, Extinction Rebellion and David Attenborough are all drawing attention to the fact that the world is heating up. But what can I do as an individual to stop catastrophic climate breakdown?

You might already be making some of the most important personal changes: eating less meat and dairy, flying less or not at all. It’s getting easier than ever to make these choices.

One of the most powerful actions you can take in ten minutes is to switch to renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. (Look at websites like Money Saving Expert to find affordable options.) Going green doesn’t just send a message. It all adds up. In the UK in July, August and September, more electricity was generated from renewables than from coal and gas for the first time since the Industrial Revolution.

While we can all sort out our own reusable coffee cups, we need governments and international organisations to make action plans for the climate emergency on a global scale.

But much of everyday life lies between these two extremes. Think about your home. Solar panels and effective insulation are obvious steps to cut the carbon bill, but if you are a tenant or leaseholder, the council has to take the lead. And Southwark Council manages more than 55,000 properties.

Think about your street. Is there room on the pavement for wheelchairs and buggies? Would you feel safe cycling to the shops? Have you got a secure place to park a bike? Housing and transport produce large shares of greenhouse gas emissions, and decisions made by the council affect my ability to ‘do the right thing’.

A local paper like Southwark News therefore plays a vital role in reporting how council decisions affect our neighbourhoods – and the wider world. In this column, I’ll also share information about projects that protect wildlife, cut waste and reduce energy consumption.

Following my predecessor Donnachadh McCarthy, I have big shoes to fill – shoes that have been in non-stop, nimble motion for many years, both campaigning and writing.

I look forward to the journey!

The battle for Finley and others with CF is not over

ictory at last! This week the News reports how Millwall-mad youngster, Finley Shoults, will finally get access to life-saving treatments for his Cystic Fibrosis.

The nine-year-old’s family had appeared in a front-page appeal in this paper earlier this year – alongside other affected Millwall fans – to call for an agreement to be struck between the NHS and pharma company Vertex over ‘miracle’ drug Orkambi.

Last week that agreement was finally struck, meaning thousands might get access to treatment to extend their lives and enhance the quality of them. The NHS and Vertex had been arguing about the price of its drugs for years before an agreement was reached, despite the products being available in other European countries.

But as Finley’s dad tells us, Orkambi is not a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. Research is still needed, and that means donations to charities which fund research into this serious genetic condition are also needed.

The battle, too, may rear its head in the future. This is a time-limited agreement and affects England only.

Pressure may yet then be needed to ensure that profiteering does not put these vital medicines out of the reach of children like Finley.

Fight for justice for Lakanal and Grenfell victims

F

ive months ago, on July 3, a group gathered at St Giles Church in Camberwell to hold a memorial for six people – three women and three children - who died in the Lakanal House fire ten years ago.

The victims were reassured, time and time again, that they would be rescued, that firefighters were coming, that they would be saved - they just needed to “stay put”. Despite the government being advised to take action after a 2013 inquest, and ensure councils were fulfilling their responsibilities, these plans were quietly shelved. The Grenfell Tower disaster was horrific and it was a cruel blow for all who campaigned for justice for the six who perished in Lakanal to see history repeat itself at such terrible scale.

This week’s report heavily criticises the Fire Brigade for failing to respond to the spread of the fire in Grenfell, staff training and their failure to realise sooner that evacuation could save lives. But families are still waiting for the government to take action – including bringing charges – against those responsible for the building and its dangerous materials. Ten years after Lakanal, we owe it to Catherine, Dayana, Thais, Felipe, Helen and Michelle and the 72 who died in Grenfell to never give up this fight for justice.

When there’s something strange in the neighbourhood - back on at west end

Since its remarkable success in 2010 at the Lyric Hammersmith, Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman’s thrilling Ghost Stories has been making its mark on tour, on film and now back in the West End – just in time for Halloween, writes Rosie O’Connell.

Rikki Jay regularly performs at major venues around Britain, including shows in the West End at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the London Palladium and the Café Royal. Over Christmas Rikki has played the principle comedian in a variety of family pantomimes across the UK. Max Fulham’s love of entertaining was sparked by performing made up shows to anyone who would stand still for long enough - family, friends and even neighbours! Since then he has been hooked on all things comedy, magic and ventriloquism. His bright, fresh approach and passion for what he does has endeared him to many pantomime audiences as Wishee Washee in Aladdin in 2017.

Despite opening nine years ago, the show is packed full with spine-tingling surprises that make it very easy to see why this play has had such enduring successes.

Our host for the evening is the rational Professor Goodman – with Simon Lipkin fluently taking over proceedings from show co-creator Andy Nyman – who ushers the audience through his lecture on his experiences with the paranormal, three incidents in particular of which he has found to be unexplainable. Lipkin is

well supported throughout by Gary Cooper, Preston Nyman and Richard Sutton as they regale the audience with their scintillating, sinister tales of the supernatural, scaring the living daylights out of the auditorium with sophisticated style.

Of course none of this can be achieved without the talent of the creative team.

With hazard tapes and flickering lights draped around the theatre as soon as you enter, these stories are brought to life by the imaginative design from Jon Bausor.

The tension is built terrifically with James Farncomb’s clever lighting design and the eerie, unsettling sound effects from Nick Manning. Scott Penrose’s special effects are the icing on the cake as the characters (and audience) are taken to meet their darkest fears.

With warnings to keep the secret, I certainly won’t be sharing any plot

spoilers and I would be remiss to anyway. That is the whole fun of it, the unknown – they are daring you to book tickets without knowing every trick and turn of the production. Sure Ghost Stories may not be for those with a nervous disposition or the faint hearted, but its clever balance between humour and horror is awfully impressive, even if you do spend the whole 80 minute runtime on the edge of your seat, eyes covered and clinging to the person next to you.

Panto and a Pint for the Working Class After many millennia, and in just 90 minutes, God (award-winning comedian Zoe Lyons), assisted by her devoted angels Gabriel and Michael, will answer some of the deepest questions that have plagued mankind since creation.

Inspired by Dickens’s own charitable work, the 2019 tour is in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital, reflecting the heartwarming message of Scrooge’s philanthropic transformation in this perfect Christmas story.

Because what you’re not doing –you’re not in rehearsals asking if this works, what the pace should be. There’s no nervousness whether the actual part, the dialogue, the way it’s structured, works. We all know it does. It’s really just a matter of me not getting gin the way of what they’ve choreographed. And then having some of my own fun within it. And I am having a lot of fun.

It’s a very bloke-y story. Everybody can relate to it. It’s very black and white. There’s only a certain way of living your life and if you don’t tick that box, you’re a failure. I don’t think that’s too far away from our modern story.

Scrooge says: you do not understand debt until you’ve been

in debt. I know people in modern times who I couldn’t get my head around why they’re so uptight about money and one of them told me when they were 14-years-old their Dad got into serious debt. If you haven’t experienced it, you can’t understand what it does to you to not have money. I’ve always made sure I earned money. We didn’t have a lot of money when I was a kid but I don’t have that attitude to money.

That story of second chances, that’s the part of the play that it very difficult not to be really emotional within. If I could have another go would I be able to fix this? It’s such a powerful question.

The effort is so great. There’s darkness to this story, there’s a lot of death but there’s a juxtaposition of death with life.

What do you choose? Do you choose to focus on the darkness and ending and the past and things that are cruel and hard?

Or do you choose to say, out of that I can choose the light, and be a person who’s generous, who has gratitude, and all those things we seek in our best mood.

You get taught how to be an actor but you very rarely get taught how to come out of character. I’ve written this book Julius Caesar and Me about the RSC version of Julius Caesar I was in and I talk about debriefing in it because it’s such a powerful thing and I demonstrate what it can do to you if you don’t. You do it in a very simple way. It’s what counsellors do when they do their role play. After you’ve finished, you say to the rest of the group that’s watching ‘sorry, my name’s not Peter, my name’s John and I don’t have a father who abused me and I’m not an alcoholic who beats his wife.’ It’s very prosaic, but it just reminds you of who you are and separates you from who that person is. And it’s really important. In acting, the skill is in the craft. Not in the being. I don’t think actors are meant to be dysfunctional human beings.

Most actors I know are absolutely sane. There’s a mythology we’re meant to bury ourselves somehow in our work.

I like things like Scrooge just starting a sentence with ‘what is Christmas time?’ And you just know what he’s going to say. It’s going to be so horrible. ‘A time for paying bills without money. A time to realise that you’re a year older and not an hour richer.’

I think we’ve come to a time when we are cynical about charity and about festivals. And we’ve got that way because we’ve been overcommercialised. There’s something about doing a show like A Christmas Carol that is about the story of the truth behind the need for Christmas. And the need to stop, check out how other people are living and if you can help, to help. It’s about human kindness and generosity of spirit.

Olivier-nominated and award-winning playwright Paul Sirett captures one of the most treasured and classic children’s fairytales Jack And The Beanstalk in this updated production at Theatre Peckham.

Amazingly there has never been a gay panto of Pride & Prejudice, until now.

The White Bear Theatre in Kennington is playing host to this latest adaption of Jane Austen’s most famous novel.

Perhaps best remembered is the 1995 BBC adaption that kick-started Colin Firth’s career as he played the lead Mr Darcy, then we had the 2004 Bollywood version Bride and Prejudice and three years ago Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

For writer Kevin Quinn it was a no brainer – the 1813 novel is he says packed solid with innuendo and characters that can so easily be adapted for a gay audience that he did not have to divert from the original text.

The blurb on the White Bear’s website says it all: think slapstick, think cock fights, cross dressing sisters and a hunk in trunks!

Gay Panto is now the mainstay for the festive period, but this is perhaps the only one that moves away from the likes of Cinderella and Mother Goose to the word of literary classics.

However, do not be fooled into expecting a high-brow night of theatre - this offering from the 43-year-old Bermondsey born newspaper editor promises bawdy scenes, classic gay anthems and wait for massive cocks.

Obviously written for an adult audience, the night promises to be great fun in this little but well established theatre above the now trendy White Bear pub on Kennington Park Road, opposite the tube station.

flu vaccine The best protection against unpredictable illness

It’s that time of the year again.

The long, warm summer days already seem a distant memory as we dig out our big coats and umbrellas ready for winter.

And with winter comes ‘seasonal flu’ – an unpleasant virus that is highly infectious and can spread rapidly through coughs and sneezes.

Flu can be

particularly nasty, causing high body temperatures, body aches and generally leaving you feeling pretty exhausted and unwell.

For most people who catch it, you should start to feel better within a week or so. Just stay at home, drink plenty of water and rest until you’re better. Your pharmacist can advise on treatments and remedies to reduce the effects, and if you feel really ill, call NHS 111.

However, some people are more susceptible to the effects of flu, with the virus increasing the risk of developing more serious illnesses, which could result in hospitalisation, permanent disability or even death.

Last winter, more than five thousand people were hospitalised because of flu and the virus kills

an average of eight thousand people annually.

That’s why the NHS offers free vaccinations for those at particular risk of flu. This includes: • People with existing health conditions: for example, things like heart problems, breathing conditions, liver or kidney diseases, or neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy. Flu on top of these conditions increases your chances of serious health compilations.

• Adults aged 65 and over: this group may suffer more than most if catching flu, so it’s important to get vaccinated.

• Pregnant women: pregnancy weakens the body’s immune system, which means you’re less able to fight off infections. Catching flu can cause

In the afterglow of a Ménage à Trois

The perfect heterosexual couple living a monogamous married life together provides the basis for many a film, book and TV drama. To quote Wilfred Owen feeding us “the old lie”, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor.

Best of friends without the chemistry

With the nights drawing in and the temperature dropping, a trip to the Vaults transports you to the sultry American south, with the first UK staging of Sam Shepard’s Ages of the Moon, writes Christopher Peacock.

A front porch, two chairs and a rusty ‘finicky’ ceiling fan are all that adorn the stage. Then our protagonists Ames and Byron take their seats on the porch and sip on their Kentucky bourbon. These old friends are brought together when Ames’ infidelity leaves his marriage in bits and he turns to Byron for some solace.

In a play of little action it feels more of a study of humanity. Shepard explores themes of relationships and insecurities but the main focus is that of ageing.

Beckett-esque in style, Ames and Byron are Shepard’s Vladimir and Estragon.

However, rather than waiting for Godot these two are waiting for an eclipse.

Two-handers rely heavily on the chemistry of its counterparts.

Christopher Fairbank as Ames and Joseph Marcell as Byron both handle

their roles well yet they struggle for any real chemistry. At times you find it hard to buy into their friendship. This leads to the play feeling quite flat and makes the hour-long piece struggle for pace. Having not been revived too often since it’s premier 10 years ago you can understand why the roles are not often reprised, especially seeing that the roles were specifically written for its original cast of Stephen Rae and Sean McGinley.

As a study of ageing, the effects of alcohol and life generally, Ages of the Moon certainly entertains in parts. With more performances you will find that the pacing and energy will improve, especially in the very capable hands of Christopher Fairbank and Joseph Marcell.

That’s not to say harmonious straight couples don’t exist, but as S Asher Gelman’s play Afterglow demonstrates, there’s more than one reality out there.

What if the couple, Alex, (Peter McPherson) and Josh, (Adi Chugh) are gay, married and both agree to a third man, Darius, (Benjamin Aluwihare), entering the relationship and having sex with them? Shock and intrigue alone may lead you to book tickets to see how this scenario plays out - and sleazy it isn’t! Gelman has taken a subject that society finds uncomfortable and presented it so that we see characters as multi- dimensional; in a word, ‘real’.

That is the outcome of both good

writing and acting.

At moments the three are passionate, impulsive, playful and flirty, then suddenly tired, grouchy and emotionally under threat. Audiences may begin to understand that this is more than three men seizing the opportunities of youth - there’s the daunting realisation that this pact comes with consequences. Physical and emotional intimacy can lead to love that’s complicated.

Further down the line, Alex acknowledges he cannot provide Josh with the level of emotional attention he needs, so his agreement to Josh and Darius continuing to see each other seems in keeping with their liberated outlook. Later, brokenhearted Alex declares, “It was an experiment that didn’t achieve the required results and I need you to end it,” we hear his pain and see the trio’s vulnerability to the human condition we’ve all

encountered: love, jealousy, lies, secrecy and broken hearts.

Thumping club music and slick choreographed set changes work in tandem with the visceral energy of the men’s relationship - Life is happening no matter what. Without censorship audiences see full nudity and simulated shower sex scenes. A nod, perhaps, to the many thousands of heterosexual shower scenes.

It is no coincidence Afterglow has become a long running show both here and in New York as it goes beyond the hysteria and hooks you in. An absolute must see.

With the spotlight having been on Northern Ireland at the centre of the Brexit debate for a while now, it seems timely that an important work of theatre from the region returns to the National, writes Christopher Peacock.

After a very successful run last year, Brian Friel’s Translations returns to the Olivier Theatre.

Set in a small Donegal village in 1833, the action takes place in an intriguing time of Irish history, between the Act of Union 1800 and the Great Famine. Translations is a simple story of Owen (Fra Free) returning to his village and the hedge school that his father Hugh (Ciaran Hinds) runs. With a new job assisting the Ordnance Survey to correctly map Ireland and help standardise/ anglicise the place names, Owen acts as translator between the Englishspeaking officers from the Ordnance

Survey and the Gaelic speaking villagers and family.

Language is at the very heart of this piece. Although all of the actors “speak” in English for the most part the characters tend to only speak in their native tongue. This leads to a lack of comprehension between the English and Irish parties which naturally provides much of the humour. Hedge schoolmaster Hugh’s love for classic literature leads to most of the villagers having a grasp of Latin and Greek, as he is forever testing them on the etymology of words. Hence, it is only English that is the linguistic barrier.

The importance of cultural identity speaks loud and clear through Friel’s work. You are left feeling that Hugh’s hedge school is the last bastion of a simple life that the villagers had always known. Change is certainly afoot, with ideas of emigrating and

a new state school being opened are referred to regularly. The fear of a potato blight is just a nod to the audience that devastation is soon to come.

The performances from the whole cast are exemplary. The staging and ambient sound work draws you in and sits you right there in rural Ireland. Directed by Ian Rickson, the whole production keeps you engaged in the lives of these rural inhabitants. It is an engrossing watch that leaves you reflecting on our colonial history and how issues of occupation and cultural identity are still so important to those in the region.

Turner’s Fighting Temeraire - to feature on £20 note - wasn’t quite as it seemed when he painted it

Earlier this month, JMW Turner’s painting, The Fighting Temeraire was unveiled as a scene on the new £20 note.

As the News reported, the painting has an unusual Rotherhithe link, as it depicts the celebrated gunship being towed to Rotherhithe in 1838 to be broken up for scrap.

But the Rotherhithe scene wasn’t quite true-to-life; so here we delve into the history of the painting which was voted in 2005 as the nation’s favourite.

JMW Turner self portrait from 1799 Hung in the National Gallery, the oil painting depicts a sunset, seen as symbol of an end of an era, as the already ghostly 98-gun vessel is being pulled by a dark and squat tugboat.

The Temeraire was one the hero ships of the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar, whose name means ‘fearless.’ At the Battle she proved to be worthy of her name.

The prospect of Napoleon’s combined Franco-Spanish forces invading Britain were only put to rest after the Battle, which finally proved once-and-for-all Britain’s undisputed naval supremacy.

Lord Nelson is well-known for being the mastermind behind the Battle, and his tactical genius is what proved to be key to ending the Napoleonic threat.

While the British had 22 ships to the French’s 33, Nelson arranged his into two columns rather than facing the

enemy vessels head on.

Nelson’s HMS Victory smashed through the enemy line taking tremendous damage, before smashing the French flagship the Bucentaure.

But its progress was impeded by the French Le Redoubtable – until the Temeraire came to the rescue.

With a series of daring manoeuvres Sir Eliab Harvey’s ship flanked the Redoubtable on one side, with HMS Victory on the other – and both fired at their foes at point blank range.

"It would be difficult to describe the horrible carnage caused by the murderous broadside,” said the French captain of the Redoubtable. “[HMS Temeraire] came up and stationed herself astern of the Redoubtable and fired into us at pistol range.

“In less than half an hour our ship was so riddled that she seemed to be

no more than a mass of wreckage.”

Not only saving Nelson’s ship, the Temeraire also managed to capture two enemy ships.

While Nelson was hit by a musket shot fired from the Redoubtable, the Temeraire continued to fight the Redoutable and destroyed the French Fougueux in the process.

A storm later swept away the wreckage of the enemy vessels, and the Temeraire’s status as “most noble and distinguished” was sealed.

Turner’s scene takes considerable artistic licence with the ship’s final Rotherhithe destination.

On September 6, 1836, the ship was actually taken for scrap at Beatson’s ship-breaking yard by two tugboats, not one.

And contemporary observers said that there was no sunset in real-life as the heroic vessel was taken on its end journey - and in his painting, looking north from Rotherhithe, the sun effectively sets in the east.

It is no longer flying the union flag, but instead a white flag, showing it is in commercial hands.

When Turner exhibited the painting in 1839, he included the lines: “The flag which braved the battle and the breeze / No Longer owns her.”

The ship itself also looked very different.

By 1838, the Temeraire’s fighting days had long been over having been retired to a hulk – a ship that can float and not sail – by 1812.

For the past thirteen years, she had served as a supply ship moored off Sheerness, Kent, and by the time she was auctioned off for her timber to ship-breaker John Beatson, many of her features were no longer in place, including the tall masts and rigging.

But Turner painted the ship with the rigging and masts still in place, as well as using a brighter white and gold colour scheme instead of the darker yellow and black that the ship was in real life.

The tug-boats were also painted much darker than in real-life, spewing out thick, black smoke.

The artist’s deviation from reality was deliberate.

Turner wanted viewers to think about the history of the Temeraire, how it had been a hero of the decisive Battle of Trafalgar; but how despite that, the nation seemed to have turned its back on her.

But so, too, was the painting a comment on the particular crossroads in British history brought about by the Industrial Revolution.

The setting sun symbolises the end of an era; while the waxing moon is a symbol of a new era that was beginning, a theme common to many of Turner’s works, the industrial era.

Turner bequeathed all of his works to the nation in his will, and the Fighting Temeraire now hangs in the National Gallery.

It will also feature on the new £20 note due to be in circulation from February – giving everyone a piece of Rotherhithe history in the pocket.

LONDON BOROUGH OF SOUTHWARK ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 SECTION 14(1) (OMEARA STREET, ROPER LANE, SHAD THAMES, VARCOE ROAD

Member Allowances Scheme: 1 April 2019 – 31 March 2020 In accordance with the Local Authorities (Members’ Allowances) (England) Regulations 2003, Southwark Council is publishing details of the allowances to be paid to members for the financial year 1 April 2019 – 31 March 2020.

The current member allowances scheme was agreed at council assembly on 27 March 2019. The scheme was agreed having taken into account the London Councils Independent Remuneration Panel Report 2018. The scheme makes provision for a basic allowance to be paid to all members, and for special responsibility allowances (SRAs) to be paid to members who take on significant additional responsibilities. The allowances are grouped in bands, and the amounts for each band are set out in Table 1 below. Member allowances are adjusted in line with the national local government officer pay settlement and allowances for officers. A 2% increase was agreed in April 2018 for the tax year 2019-20 and the figures set out in table 1 below reflect this increase. The amounts listed are gross figures and are subject to deductions for national insurance contributions and income tax.

(TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) 1.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable highway works to be carried out, it intends to make an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

2.

Whilst the works are in progress, or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in: (a) Omeara Street, between Southwark Street and Union Street (b) Roper Lane, between Druid Street to 25m from the junction of Tower Bridge Road (c) Shad Thames, between Gainsford Street and Maguire Street (d) Varcoe Road, at it’s junction with Verney Road

No member may receive more than one SRA. Members of the licensing sub-committee receive an allowance in recognition of the heavy workload of the sub-committee.

The existing one way working in Roper Lane and Maguire Street will be made two way for access and egress purposes for 2b and 2c

The alternative route for (a) Southwark Street, Union Street, Borough High Street. (b) Druid Street, Tower Bridge Road. (c) Gainsford Street, Maguire Street. (d) Verney Road, Bramcote Grove.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

7.

The works will be in place for (a) 18th – 19th November. (b) 14th November at 22:00hrs – 15th November at 06:00hrs. (c) 16th November, if due to adverse weather conditions, then the works will be in place on the 23rd or 30th November. (d) 16th – 17th November or if due to adverse weather conditions then the works will be in place on the 23rd – 24th November.

Smith equalised four minutes after half-time after Sam Higgins had given the hosts a sixteenth-minute lead.

A strong wind made it a game of two halves as Gavin Rose’s side battled back to gain a point that leaves them thirteenth in National League South, six points off the play-offs.

Chelmsford dominated the first half and should have been more than one goal up by the break. The Hamlet struggled to mount a serious attack on their opponents’ goal.

Cotter was again off target and then a combination of Quade Taylor and Grainger prevented Dane Winfield doubling his side’s lead.

Following Rose’s half-time teamtalk the Hamlet were a different proposition after the break.

It took them just four minutes to level. Following a corner and a goalmouth scramble when Smith and Taylor were denied, the former had a second bite and forced the ball over the line.

That goal boosted Dulwich and it was Rose’s side who looked the more likely to score next. They struggled to create any clear-cut chances until 20 minutes left when Hunte fired in a volley after linking up with Dominic Vose and Jack Connors, but goalkeeper Carl Pentney saved.

Ashanike took over from Allen Fenn at the end of September and began his reign with a 0-0 draw at then tabletoppers Chatham Town.

The Fish went five more games without defeat during the month, only conceding two goals in six fixtures.

The Rotherhithe club also advanced to the second round in both the FA Vase and Kent Senior Trophy.

A hardy 27 Fisher fans travelled to Glebe this week and saw their side

fall behind when Chris Edwards fired in a free-kick off the crossbar from 25 yards.

Fisher appeared to be heading for a first defeat under Ashanike, before Greg Akpele scored an equaliser in the 89th minute.

At the other end of the pitch there was a notable milestone as goalkeeper Dan West became the 400th Fisher player to make his debut since the club reformed in 2009.

Fisher still have a lot to do to climb the table, as they sit sixteenth with eleven points from thirteen games.

“What a month we had at Fisher,” Ashanike said. “The boys are working really hard and fighting for each other.

Ballers FA Youth 11-4 Eltham Lions THREE PLAYERS grabbed hattricks in another thumping win for Rotherhithe side Ballers FA Youth.

Nahshon Bedeau-Francis, Issa Sulaiyman-Matthews and Milo Eaves could all have claimed the match ball, while Freddie Doublet and Mecca Maxime-Samuels were also on target against Eltham Lions.

Ballers dominated almost the entire game, though some lapses let the Lions in for what proved to be only consolation goals.

One of the coaches, Charlie Pearce,

said: “The team play and finishing on show was very pleasing to watch, in a game which saw three Ballers players claiming hat-tricks, so big congratulations to them.

“The team and coaches would like to say well done Issa SulaiymanMatthews for his man-of-the-match performance. He showed great desire and determination to get forward as well as help out his team-mates when needed.”

There is now a break from league action as Ballers take on Interwood in the London Cup.

After the game was moved to Coldharbour Sports, manager Danny Gibson set his side up in a 3-5-2 formation with Binitie in the number 10 role and John Woolley coming into the side to replace Bobby Redwood.

Emannuel Lawal went close to opening the scoring but saw his effort saved, before he broke the offside trap to make it 1-0.

Draper equalised after a scramble in the Rye box but skipper Ben Phillips rallied the side and led by example as he broke from midfield to square to Woolley who restored the lead.

Gibson and coach Owen Rochester switched Keenan Rochester with Ricky Essex on the right of midfield and minutes later Woolley set up Binitie as the Rye went 3-1 up.

Tevel Nicholson found the net to make it 4-1 before Draper pulled a goal back after goalkeeper Jim Holman had given away a penalty.

Binitie scored his second late on as Peckham went top of the league table.

Thursdays 5-6PM AGE? 8-12 Year Olds According to the women’s sport foundation, by the age of 14 girls are dropping out of sports at two times the rate of boys.

This is a particular issue in the London borough of Southwark. According to data collected by Southwark Council just over 40.2% of males compared to only 28% of females are taking part in 30 minutes of sport per week.

According to This Girl Can, which is a nationwide campaign backed by Sport England with the objective of getting women and girls moving, regardless of shape, size and ability 40% of women aged 16 and over are not active enough to get the full health benefits of sport and physical activity, compared to 35% of men.

Engaging more woman and girls into sport has been a hot topic for many years with the likes of the Premier League and Sport England trying to implement a big push over the last few years. Regarding girls in sport, the Premier League Kicks programme will be looking to increase female participation between the ages of 8 to 18 playing football on a regular basis and to increase the opportunities for women and girls to develop skills and confidence and progress within the pathway as a player, coach or an official.

In partnership with the Dockland Settlements in Rotherhithe, the Millwall Premier League Kicks programme have been running a free girl only football session which runs every Thursday from 5-6pm for girls aged 8 to 11 where the group are encouraged to develop a mastery of the ball and be confident to try new

things, be confident in showcasing their individuality on the ball and use the individuality to benefit themselves and their friends. The group also work on a range of skills such as running, jumping, hopping, bending, twisting and dodging. All of which are important motor skills. These motor skills are vital to a child development as they help a child gain strength and confidence in their body. Furthermore, it helps them to get exercise which is important for a physical, physiological and social lifestyle.

A parent of a participant that attends the session was in full praise of the efforts Millwall PL Kicks are investing into girls’ football: “My daughter loves the only girls football sessions run by Millwall Premier League Kicks for girls.

Each session is run with care and never lacking in fun. The girls develop their skills, are aware of targets they can aim towards and are constantly praised for their achievements. The coaches are approachable, polite and supportive

to the girl’s individual needs. I highly recommend the sessions to any girl who is wishing to improve her football skills, to gain confidence on as well as off the pitch and to have a positive attitude towards team sports and girl's football particularly.”

Millwall Premier League Kicks coordinator and coach on the session Gary Otim commented: “Its been a massive drive of the Kicks programme to engage with more girls in sport.

Our track record of general engaging, retaining and sustaining participation over the years has been excellent. We have always been strong in this regard due to the high demand of football from boy and young men in the boroughs of Southwark and Lewisham. However, with the support from the Dockland Settlement and the Premier League we have been able to start a free girl’s only football session. By targeting girls at an earlier age means hopefully they will continue a longer-lasting journey in football where they will hopefully stay in love with football and sport.

Many of the parents have commented saying there aren’t enough accessible provisions for girls which is something we will continue to try to rectify.

Millwall Community Trust will continue provide a wide range of weekly football sessions across the London boroughs of Southwark and Lewisham under the Premier League Kicks programme.

Jed Wallace slams in a second from the penalty spot

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IT WAS a statement opening win for Gary Rowett last Saturday.

It was against the club that sacked him last January, with Lee Gregory returning to The Den hoping to make a statement of his own.

But Gregory barely got a sniff against Shaun Hutchinson and Jake Cooper.

Gregory did have one chance but fluffed his lines from six yards out when he should have at least hit the target.

That was always the criticism of him at Millwall, that he needed too many chances to score one goal.

Tom Bradshaw has shown this season if he gets an opportunity the ball usually ends up in the back of the net. Bradshaw’s run of scoring in consecutive league games ended at four, thus he failed to match Alex Rae’s sequence of scoring in five games in a row in the second tier in 1991-92.

But that hardly even qualifies as a disappointment on a day a new era dawned and there was plenty to think that Millwall have made a smart choice in Rowett.

Rowett didn’t change much, but there was definitely a little bit more football played by the side. He started Ben Thompson in an advanced midfield role off Bradshaw and Thompson scored his first goal of the season.

There was a first clean sheet in the league in eleven games, and it was the first time Millwall had won a game by two goals since they defeated West Brom 2-0 last April.

Since Neil Harris’ resignation, Millwall have scored eight goals in four league games; they had scored eight in the first ten league games of the season.

That’s not a dig at Harris, but Millwall had been really lacking in attacking coherence under him. It was just too similar to last season.

Thompson mentioned that the Lions

did more than they usually would in the two days before the game, as Rowett tried to get his messages into the squad.

“It’s all a learning curve, I’m happy to keep learning and try and get better and better,” Thompson said. “There’s been a lot of information. Training was intense, sharp. It’s about learning and listening and taking it all in.

“It was a tough few days. Thursday and Friday we did a bit more work on the training ground than we normally do. It paid off and we showed how well we can play.”

Millwall were especially slick in the first half, with Mahlon Romeo getting into advanced positions from rightback.

Thompson took his goal superbly, sweeping home Wallace’s cross from the right wing. Thompson had started the season so well before he dipped, reflecting the overall slump in the last few weeks under Harris.

He showed how much of a goal

threat he could be after returning from Portsmouth last season, and Rowett obviously sees that value as well.

Rowett wants to play a quicker attacking game, with more players interacting in the final third of the pitch.

Wallace almost put Millwall ahead after a move that involved Murray Wallace and Bradshaw, but curled a shot wide from 25 yards.

Wallace was a player mentioned by Rowett last week after he took over, and the winger looks like he could flourish under the new man.

Wallace will be given the freedom to get involved off the wing and exert his influence.

His run in the second half, from his own half, was vintage. He went past three Stoke players before being fouled

by Badou Ndiaye.

Wallace is now Millwall’s first-choice penalty taker and he emphatically slammed his effort into the top corner from twelve yards. It was his fifth goal of the season, the last four from the

penalty spot. Ironically, Gregory was once Millwall’s penalty taker before Harris stripped him of those duties.

Gregory will feel he should have made more of his one big chance, but Hutchinson was there to put him off and the striker dribbled a shot wide.

“It's certainly a very good start,” Rowett said. “The intensity and frontfoot attacking was good, and the team showed they could play a bit with some good movement.

“I don't want to put a ceiling on what we can achieve, with the desire and drive and energy we've got.

“We had to tell a few to calm down because they're kicking each other and having arguments and screaming at each other. They want to win games, they want to climb the table quickly.

“We've got a lot of work to do, one game is only one game. We've won it, great, but we've got to build on that.”

The immediate challenge for Rowett is to try to get the team to win away from home.

Things looking up for Fergie

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk SHANE FERGUSON insists Millwall are looking up rather than down in the Championship – and says the dressing room is confident they can lift the side up the table.

The Lions are fifteenth in the Championship after last Saturday’s 2-0 win over Stoke, six points off the top six and three off the top half.

Ferguson is impressed with the impact that Gary Rowett has made since he succeeded caretaker Adam Barrett following Neil Harris’ resignation.

Northern Ireland international Ferguson feels there is a “buzz” around the training ground, after he admitted that like the rest of the squad he was taken by surprise when Harris stood down.

Ferguson is in his longest spell with a club in his professional career, after Harris signed him from Newcastle, initially on loan in August 2015, before the deal was made permanent the following January.

“I was out for dinner for Ben’s [Thompson] birthday and we saw it online like most,” Ferguson said.

“Obviously it was really sad. We’d been with the manager more than four seasons. It was a shock to the system.

“There were so many good moments like that (points to a photo of the celebrations after the 2017 League One play-off final at Wembley). He was fantastic for the club and what he achieved was brilliant. All the other lads felt the same as well.

“He was massive for me. At the time I signed I was coming back from a longterm injury. He gave me the chance to come here and play.

“He was honest with me from day one and he helped me a lot. I couldn’t speak more highly of him.

‘Buzz’ around club as players aim to impress new man

“When I came on loan I was in the last few months of my contract at Newcastle and he sold the club to me straightaway.

“I phoned him after the Leeds game.

We’d all got a text message from him so I gave him a call and thanked him for everything.

“Neil was fantastic with manmanagement. He was always there if you wanted to have a chat. It seems like the same with the new manager. He’s been great in the meetings we’ve had so far.

“Ads did brilliantly as well, it was difficult taking it on after Neil left. He did such a good job and in the time he’s been here he’s another one you can always go and chat to. Ads is just like your mate, he’s such a nice person. I’m really happy for him that he did so well after Neil left, and I’m really glad he’s staying.

“There’s a great buzz around the place.

We have to work as hard as we can now, at the end of the day we’re all here to do the best we can for Millwall. We want to get as far up the table as we can and it’s exciting, we’re looking forward to improving the position in the league.

“The manager said when he came in that we need to look up the table rather than down. We’ve been playing really well and picking up some decent results.

“The manager spoke about the away form as well and trying to improve it.

We know it’s not been good enough. You look at the Brentford game and it was so disappointing we threw it away.

“We want to put that right and get a good result at Reading.”

Millwall put in arguably their best performance of the season to beat Stoke, after just two training sessions under Rowett.

Ferguson continued: “It was a perfect start, it was a massive three points for us. We knew how important it was going into the game.

“We’d had a couple of days with the manager and you could see from the way we played he gave us a lot of confidence to go out and do the job.

“Everyone did really well and we can look forward to the next game.

“It wasn’t difficult because some of us have been at clubs with different managers coming in and you’re trying to take in as much information as you can.

“Everyone knew their job and now we’ve got the whole week to get more information on board ahead of Saturday.

“The first half was brilliant, it’s probably the best we’ve played all season. The second half we slowed it down a little bit and were more composed on the ball rather than playing it quickly.

“We played with a bit more freedom in the final third as well and trusted ourselves. You saw on Saturday everyone was full of confidence and trying to impress the manager as well.

We want to keep that up.”

Conceding late has been an issue since the first game of the 201819 season, and Ferguson experienced similar disappointment on international duty recently when Northern Ireland let in two goals in injury-time to lose 3-1 to the Netherlands.

It leaves Michael O’Neill’s side with only an outside chance of reaching Euro 2020.

“It was really tough,” Ferguson admitted. “You’re playing against wordclass players and we felt we did really well in that game. It’s just the way football is sometimes.

“The quality in the final third was so good, and if you make a mistake you’re going to get punished. That’s probably one of the biggest differences to the

Championship.

“The manager was really pleased with how we played, going to Holland and giving them such a tough game. He was proud of us and we were, too. It showed how far we’ve come that we went to Holland and we were disappointed we didn’t get a result.

“We’re such a good team. It may not be a team of individuals but together we’ve been unbelievable.”

Before that uphill international task, Ferguson is focused on helping his club side continue a good run that has seen them lose just once in six league games.

“After the game on Saturday you could see the confidence in the dressing room.

Everyone’s in it together and we all want the same thing.

“We’re not going to look too far ahead, but we’re excited for the future.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JED WALLACE believes Gary Rowett has come into a culture characterised by “discipline” and “hard work” – and the winger is “excited” by the “new ideas” Millwall’s manager will bring to the squad.

Rowett’s influence is already evident.

The new Lions boss told Wallace, who he believes is one of the best players in the league in his position, that he wanted him playing closer to the opposition goal.

Wallace assisted Ben Thompson and then won and scored a penalty in the 2-0 win over Stoke last Saturday.

Rowett has also urged the players to find a higher level away from home as the Lions chase a first win on the road in the league since last March.

Wallace believes the club have the manager to take them to the next level.

“He spoke about getting me higher up the pitch as soon as he came in. He said he wanted me closer to the opposition goal and made a couple of tactical changes from restarts last weekend, and it worked,” Wallace said.

“My strength is hurting other teams and I want to be doing that. I want to have as much energy as I can for when I have the ball because I feel I can make things happen in that final third.

“We now need to improve our away form. The intensity we play at is unbelievable. You hear other managers talk about that when their teams play against us. Other teams try and match our intensity and sometimes it’s almost too much because we play at such an intensity for so long that naturally you do drop off.

“At times in the first half last weekend when we were winning the game we took

the sting out of it really well. There are only so many times we can keep getting at them, keep running behind them.

Sometimes with the footballers we’ve got in the middle of the park we can go the other way and have more control.

“The new manager has stressed to us about controlling the game a little bit more. What’s been refreshing is that he has come in and said if you find yourself in your stock position that you’ve been doing the last four or five years then that’s fine, trust it because you’ve been doing alright. Which we have.

“It’s a bit of a weird circumstance for the new manager to come into because we’re already set up really well. It’s not like he’s taken over a team at the bottom of the table. He’s taken over a great bunch of lads that are already disciplined, already hard-working. That’s the culture that has been built at the training ground.

“We just needed some fresh ideas and I’m really, really excited to move forward with the new manager. If we can replicate what we did on Saturday I’m sure we’ll be fine.

“A lot of us have had the same ideas for a while and we’ve been successful.

Sometimes you need new impetus and new ideas, even just to keep the opposition guessing. We did that Saturday, I played a little bit more inside, a little bit closer to the goal.

“We’re a good team at home, we know that. The manager is now stressing to us can we get even 75 per cent of the levels away as we have at home and be pushing towards the top half of the table.

“I analyse things a lot and we have to improve away from home. We’ve let ourselves down as a changing room, as a group we need to find ways to win away from home.

“Hopefully that will start on Saturday.

We’ll roll into Reading with loads of confidence. It’s an exciting time for the club. We’ve got loads of good young players mixed with hard-working older pros. There’s a middle group of myself, Coops [Jake Cooper], Bradders [Tom Bradshaw], Thommo that really want to push the club forward over the next three or four years.

“What I feel now is excitement and we aren’t very far away from being a very good team. We’ve showed it in spells this season. Saturday we probably showed it for 60, 70 minutes what a good team we could be. “[Rowett’s] also been stressing to us about his Birmingham team. I played against them and they were a tough team to play against. That’s what we want to be, we want to be that Millwall team that when teams play against us they think, ‘we’ve got a real game today’. Stoke had that last weekend, we ran all over them, we wanted to win more than them.

“We need to be going into every game with that attitude. If we can replicate the manager’s attitude and how hungry he is to do well then we’ll be a good team.”

Wallace has scored five goals this season, the last four from the penalty spot. On Saturday he ran more than half

the length of the pitch before he was fouled, and regained his composure and breath before firing in the clinching goal.

He gave an insight into his approach to spot-kicks.

Wallace explained: “I speak to all the goalies at Millwall and ask their opinion on where they think the goalie is going to go and what they would do. I practise five or six before a Saturday so it’s fresh in my mind.

“The last two in particular I felt super confident. I’m a great believer in that there is no pressure on them. I was watching a game recently and Luis Suarez missed a penalty, the best players in the world miss penalties.

“As long as you don’t do something silly.

You have to hit the target, do it properly.

I wouldn’t do a Lyle Taylor [with a slowwalk-up]. Everyone’s got their own technique and each to their own, but if you’re going to miss you want to do it in the right way.

“Luckily with Shaun Williams, he’s one of my best mates in the changing room, we speak a lot. He’s taken a lot of penalties in his career and as soon as we won it he came over and said, ‘give yourself a minute, take a breath and clam down’.

“I gave myself 30 seconds to compose myself. It was important because at that time we hadn’t really got going second half. We saw it out very comfortably after that.

“I think we controlled that game better than we’d controlled games in the past.

The two Irish boys [Williams and Jayson Molumby] in midfield were outstanding, they really took the sting out of the game, which helped us.

“I never felt like were going to lose.”

Championship preview

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT’S next challenge is to try to crack the side’s away form and lead the Lions to a first away win of the season in the league.

Millwall’s last Championship victory on the road was at Birmingham on March 13, when Ben Thompson’s double ended a four-game losing run and give a crucial boost to efforts to beat the drop.

The record since then away from The Den – where they have lost just once this season – is six defeats and five draws in eleven games.

On the evidence of last Saturday, Rowett wants more attacking impetus from his full-backs. It was noticeable that Rowett encouraged Mahlon Romeo – who was making his 150th appearance in all competitions for the club – to push up the pitch whenever there was space in front of him.

Rowett isn’t getting carried away by last Saturday’s win, the first by two goals this season, and wants to build on it this weekend.

“It was really positive, but we’re mindful it was the first game and a lot of things can happen in the first game,” Rowett said. “There’s that newness and enthusiasm and the challenge is going to be to maintain a lot of what we did.

“I was really pleased with the fact that the players took on a lot of our ideas in a short space of time and executed them with quality to match the enthusiasm and endeavour that we know the team has.

“Whether your performance is an attacking one or a defensive one, and it usually has a bit of everything in there, you have to have that solid base. I know the team this season hasn’t kept as many clean sheets as they would like.

“I think at the weekend [the clean sheet] was down to the composure the players showed in the last ten or fifteen minutes when against a side like Stoke you can come under a lot of pressure. But I felt we kept our shape, we still pressed when we needed to press. That’s important that we don’t just drop in and hang on, which I know

Millwall host antidiscrimination meeting MILLWALL HAVE revealed details of ‘Our Biggest Match’ – a conference being held at The Den on December 9 which aims to bring together EFL clubs, campaigning organisations and media personalities to discuss best practice around antidiscrimination measures.

The club is working with Kick It Out, Show Racism The Red Card, the Football Supporters Association and The EFL to put together an event uniting everyone in football against discrimination.

Millwall said: “A long list of guest speakers, including club representatives, campaigners and attendees from the media, will take to the stage at the conference for the first of what Millwall hopes will be regular meetings, enabling clubs to consistently advance their own initiatives and enhance the collective drive to remove discrimination of all kinds from football.”

“My initial feeling is that it’s a really good group and you don’t want to lose that feeling of togetherness,” Rowett said. “But as we go along there are always going to be one or two areas where we feel we can add something different to give us that flexibility around how we want to play.

“It’s always hard, because if the players who are out injured were back fit you’d have a decent-sized squad. At the moment the squad is fairly tight, but I like working with a smaller squad. It

gives you good continuity because there are players out of the team who are never too far out of the team. That’s important.

“It’s only a small squad if some of the under-23s are not ready to step up. We’ll watch the game [against QPR on Tuesday]. There’s the likes of Billy Mitchell and from what everyone’s told me he’s one that’s ready to play a role.

“How big or small that is will depend on him but he’s one that might be ready to step up and add to the squad.

“That’s the idea, that you add two or three from the 23s that could step up and be within the squad. You might want an extra player in this position or that position come January. But I’m also aware that the budget’s not huge.

“We don’t want to lose what the squad has got which is an incredible spirit and togetherness. That’s evident.”

Wallace assisted and scored as Millwall defeated Stoke 2-0 last weekend in Rowett’s first match in charge.

Millwall haven’t won consecutive league games since New Year’s Day, when they followed up their 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest with a 3-2 victory at Ipswich.

That was a third Championship win in a row and the only other time they won successive games last season was the previous October against Wigan and Ipswich.

The Lions are just three points off the top half ahead of this Saturday’s trip to Reading as Rowett looks for a second win in two games.

“He’s hungry to do well and so am I and so are the rest of the players,” Wallace said. “I know how much of a good changing room we’ve got, with the culture in there, the leadership.

“We’ve got a lot of players at this level that want to prove themselves and push on, and now we’ve got a manager that we know is a good appointment. He’s been at a few big clubs before and hopefully he can bring us that experience.

“It’s been a great start for him but it’s only been one game. We want to go on a run. We haven’t won backto-back games enough over the last couple of years and that’s what we want to be doing. We want to push towards that top half of the table.

“Hopefully with this manager in charge we can do that.”
