three decades of local politics Ian Wingfield now longest serving Labour councillor

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Ian Wingfield is celebrating 30 years as a Southwark Councillor, making him Labour’s longest serving local politician in the borough.

The only other councillor to have reached the same milestone of continuous service was the late Conservative councillor Toby Eckersley, who died last year.

Cllr Wingfield was first elected on October 12, 1989 and since then has served in all three of Southwark’s constituencies.

His first stint was in Peckham’s Friary ward, until 1994. He was re-elected in Newington the same year, serving until 1998, and then stood in Camberwell, where he continues as one of three Labour councillors representing St Giles.

In a career spanning three decades, he says some of the work he is most proud of includes setting up the Southwark Civic Association and the Civic Awards, alongside his successful campaign for the council to adopt the Armed Forces Covenant, committing it to help provide employment, housing and care for local exservice men and women.

But, he tells the News, his unquestionable career high so far was Labour’s 2010 local election win, when the party took back the council after losing in 2002.

“Eight years in opposition was a very frustrating time, as I continued to represent and serve my constituents in Camberwell but was not in a position to introduce policies that would help them,” he says.

“This was followed by the equally important election of Neil Coyle as MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark in 2015. A day I will savour for the rest of my life.”

Having previously served as a no nonsense chief whip in his local party, after the 2010 election victory, Wingfield became the council’s deputy leader and housing cabinet member.

He set to work recreating the housing department - which he felt had effectively been abolished under the Liberal Democrats and Conservative coalition - and creating new resident forums.

This was also the time when the party launching its Southwark Housing Commission into housing need and supply.

Housing has always been a burning issue in the borough, but at the beginning of his tenure, the threat of depopulation was the biggest cause of concern.

“The main issue in 1989 was economic deprivation. When I first came to Southwark in 1983 for the infamous Bermondsey parliamentary by-election I got off the tube at Surrey Docks and saw a sight right out of TS Eliot’s The Wasteland.

“It’s hard to picture now but there was no investment for the old docklands and Southwark, like London as a whole, was depopulating. How could this be reversed?

“Our development director, Fred Manson, came up with the idea that by attracting a large arts organisation south of the river we could stimulate economic development.

“We put our collective minds to work and settled on offering the former Bankside Power Station to the Tate. And the rest is history as they say.

“Southwark has been at the forefront of economic change and vitality in the capital brings social, educational and employment benefits. It has rightfully taken its place as a central London destination.”

Since then the borough has changed a great deal - with many controversies along the way.

But high drama is nothing new to politics.

As a new councillor elected in a by-election, Wingfield remembers arriving to his first Poll Tax setting meeting in 1990, his first major meeting.

“When I arrived at the old town hall in Camberwell I found a swathe of protesters covering the entrance and grounds,” he recalls.

“Being slight in height and dressed casually for the occasion I managed to navigate my way to the front inside the town hall.

“I was then confronted with eight huge and burly police officers locked arm in arm guarding the closed security doors.

“I showed them my ID pass to get in but they didn’t budge.

“However this revelation prompted those protesters around me to shout “He’s a councillor!” and a barrage of blows, kicks and spittle descended.

“After what seemed an eternity of receiving such punishment one policeman opened the door and let me in.

“I joined my colleagues to be told they had all entered through a back door.

“I then found out that as I was new, my name wasn’t yet on the list of councillors. That was my baptism of fire to local government.”

Wingfield has no plans to stand down anytime soon - especially given the prospect of a general election.

“Local authority finance has been decimated across the country by both the coalition and Tory governments, with Southwark’s budget being halved.

“If it wasn’t for the prudence and sound investments by our Labour council and the increased tax income base from more businesses moving into regeneration areas, then Southwark would be in a more precarious position.

“The election of a Labour government would reverse this trend and give local councils the required funding and vital freedoms to allow them to grow and develop in line with their residents’ needs and expectations.

“The continued building and provision of council homes at council rents is an absolute must.

“Then after 30 years of a Labour Government I think I can rest easy!”

The Camberwell and Peckham MP has said the “50 shades of grey” defence meant men were being let off for choking or beating their partners to death by blaming sex acts gone wrong.

She is proposing two changes in the Domestic Abuse Bill, debated in parliament this month. The first would mean in cases of death or serious injury the defendant could not claim the victim consented.

The second would make the decision to use a charge less than murder in domestic homicide cases, such as manslaughter, sit with the director of public prosecutions.

In the House of Commons, Harman told MPs: “Men are now, literally, getting away with murder by using the “rough sex” defence”, and described the “lurid, unchallengeable accounts of addiction to violent sex” as horrendous for grieving families. Campaigning group ‘We Can’t Consent To This’ has published details of 58 British women killed by men who claimed their deaths were as a result of violent - but consensual - sex.

In a case Harman said was the worst she had come across, 26-year-old Natalie Connolly’s body was found at the home she shared with her partner in Staffordshire with 40 separate injuries including vaginal arterial bleeding, bluntforce injuries to the head, and a fractured eye socket.

He was sentenced to three years and eight months for manslaughter after claiming the injuries were from “rough sex”.

Harman’s request to the attorney general to review the “lenient” sentence was declined this year. She told the House even jurors from the trial approached her in shock that her killer did not face a murder change.

In the last five years, the defence was successful in six out of fourteen cases to reach trial, with the man either found not guilty or receiving a lighter conviction.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The iconic ‘Peckham Portraits’ of black British, African and Caribbean actors returned to their original home this week as they were reinstalled outside Mountview Academy during Black History Month.

The portraits, which had been on display for a decade in Peckham Hill Street from 2008 before being removed during Mountview’s construction, are now back after being unveiled on Tuesday, October 15.

One of the UK’s longest-running public art installations, the pictures pay homage to Peckham and the country’s incredible acting talent from black British and African and Caribbean backgrounds.

Idris Elba, Adjoa Andoh, Kwame KweiArmah, David Oyelowo, Diane Parish, Colin Salmon and Rudolph Walker are all captured by artists Franklyn Rodgers, and are pictured with their own inspirational quotes.

It is one of 36 sites saved across London in the last year. After being taken over by South London Gallery when it was left to them in an anonymous legacy, the formerly derelict Grade II-listed structure was restored and turned into an arts centre with the help of a multi-million fundraiser.

Based at 82 Peckham Road, the capital’s oldest surviving purposebuilt station was in use from 1867 and included stables and rooms upstairs for firefighters and their families who lived on site.

The brigade moved out in the 1920s and, from 1934 until 2007, it was used as the factory where Kennedy’s made their sausage rolls.

“It was that moment that inspired me to reassemble the individuals and organisations behind the original works.”

He explained: “Reinstating the Peckham Portraits will be an electrifying moment. It’s our way of saying thank you and thank you to the community that cherished them for so many years.

“We also hope of course that it will inspire the next generation. When you see yourself on a building, you can see

yourself in it.”

In the last ten years Peckham has gone through many changes – including on-going regeneration – and a new generation of actors have graced the small and silver screen, including John Boyega and Damson Idris.

“The reinstatement of the Portraits to their original home in Peckham is, we believe, another positive step in underlining the wealth of talent across the British black community,” says James.

Annette Hamley-Jenkins, will appear on the second episode of this year’s series on Tuesday, October 22, where she is taking on the challenge of painting East Sussex’s Hertsmonceaux Observatory alongside seven artists to have made it through previous rounds.

The winning artist will then go through to the semi-final. The winner will gain a £10,000 commission to create a landscape piece of Venice for the Royal Institute of British Architects.

will there be uproar if lion moves?

josh@southwarknews.co.uk The Bermondsey Lion could be moved under initial design proposals for the Blue Marketplace.

A consultation into a radical £2m overhaul of Bermondsey’s historic town centre concludes on Saturday, and includes proposals to transform the market’s infrastructure and surrounding shop fronts.

Controversially, however, the Blue’s lion sculpture, currently at the entrance to the marketplace, could be placed on top of a roof near to Bell and Son’s butchers, among other possible locations.

“Moving the Bermondsey Lion to a different location such as on top of buildings where it can be seen from the train and surrounding streets, near a sign saying THE BLUE,” is one of the options currently being consulted on.

BREAKING NEWS: ‘Blue bottling’

BERMONdSEY : The area beside the Poundland in Southwark Park Road’s Blue was taped off on Wednesday morning after police said a man was bottled, writes Josh Salisbury...

A police spokesperson said they were called to reports of the fight at around 8.30am, between two men, one of whom was bottled over the head. He suffered ‘minor’ injuries, said Scotland Yard.

The scene was cordoned off while officers conducted inquiries, and no arrests have been made.

It was taken down at around 11.40am.

Officers did not have a description of those they believed to have been involved at this stage.

The authorities said they believe the early morning fight started in Windmill Close.

Witnesses said that two men were seen fighting on Southwark Park Road, and allegedly even throwing cabbages at each other from a vegetable stall at a nearby shop. This was not confirmed by police.

Another witness said the bottled man then came into the Poundland, with blood over him.

Officers from Forensic Services could be seen bagging up an item as part of their investigation. The Poundland is operating as normal. It comes after an incident on Southwark Park Road yesterday evening, in which witnesses described seeing a man being arrested.

The News has contacted police for further details.

Shuttleworth Park has also been suggested as a new location for the lion under the proposals under consultation. The sculpture’s current location would be replaced with a water fountain, if backed by locals.

But former South Bermondsey councillor, Paul Kyriacou, said: “The lion is iconic and part of our heritage and gives us all a huge feeling of civic pride, the perfect focal point for the Blue.

“A focal point that means something to local people.

To hide our heritage behind a wall, out of the line of sight and then state that commuters will see this while travelling away from Bermondsey into London Bridge is insulting,” Mr Kyriacou is a former chair of the South Bermondsey partnership, and was a councillor for the ward for more than twelve years.

However, the consultation stresses that any feedback, positive or negative,

would be taken into account when drawing up final plans.

“The proposal, and it’s only a proposal, is part of an upcoming public consultation about improvement in the area,” the Blue Bermondsey BID has said in response to criticism about the placement of the statue.

“Everyone will be welcome to write their feedback. On our preconsultation, there have been those who support the relocation and those who prefer to see [it] where it is.”

The final drop-ins on the initial design plans are being held on Friday – 11am- 5.00pm at 10 Market Place.

There is power in numbers A group for parents of children with special educational needs has been launched to help mums and dads in their battle to get the right support, writes Josh Salisbury...

The launch event of the Southwark Independent Voice forum on September 19 saw parents, councillors and gather for a workshop about siblings and other family members of those with special educational needs.

Monthly events are planned, covering an array of areas from mental health to education.

The group aims to empower families, particularly those from hard-to-reach communities, to be able to navigate the process to getting support for their children, as well as providing social events for people with similar experiences.

It also hopes to be a voice for parents of children with special education needs with the council.

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk Millwall HAS said it “warmly welcomes” Lewisham council’s announcement that it will scrap a conditional land sale agreement after almost six years of uncertainty around the future of The Den.

Millwall faced the threat of having to leave its home if three pieces of land around the stadium were sold to the property developer Renewal.

But constructive talks over the last yearand-a-half led to last Thursday evening’s announcement by the council and relief for the club and Lions supporters.

Millwall can now proceed with their own development plans for the land around The Den, as well as the stadium itself.

Renewal has been accumulating its own land as part of the ‘New Bermondsey’ regeneration scheme and will develop those areas separately.

A council statement read: “Following a period of intensive collaboration over the past eighteen months, Lewisham Council, Millwall Football Club and the development company, Renewal, have agreed a new approach to enable their sites to go forward for housing and other development.

“The previous plan had included a potential compulsory purchase order to develop part of a site currently leased by Millwall Football Club. Following months of negotiation facilitated by the Mayor of Lewisham, Damien Egan, the previous Conditional Land Sale Agreement will now be terminated.

“Plans which involve building on

“This paves the way for an increase in much-needed social housing for Lewisham residents and retains the Millwall stadium.”

“This agreement was concluded in December 2013 and provided for the sale

“The project will bring new housing, including social housing, jobs and a new train station to an area currently underresourced. Over the past year, positive and constructive talks have been taking place between the Council, Renewal and Millwall Football Club to agree a way forward.

“This week, I updated councillors on these discussions and next steps. This includes bringing a report to Mayor and Cabinet next week seeking approval to terminate the Conditional Land Sale Agreement and Compulsory Purchase Order Indemnity Agreement.

“This will then pave the way for community consultation on development of the Surrey Canal Triangle site.”

“The regeneration of the area is an exciting opportunity for Lewisham. Our priority is that it must deliver more social homes, a new train station and have community support.”

The forum will share information about how to access support while also providing social events for parents too.

“It’s the parents who know their child, and who are experts in their child,” added Cllr Jasmine Ali, who holds the Southwark Cabinet portfolio for Children.

“Every child is different, but [through this] we can learn from each other, but also the council can learn from the parents.”

The group’s next event is being held on October 17 at the Links Community Hall in Rotherhithe New Road.

The Windrush scandal retold

elephant & Castle: A BBC presenter and historian is to hold a community screening of his Windrush documentary, writes Josh Salisbury...

David Olusoga, a professor of public history of Manchester University, will be leading a screening and talk around his BBC Two documentary, The Unwanted, which explores the roots of the Windrush scandal.

The event, at Draper Hall in Newington Butts on Tuesday, October 22, is being held to commemorate Black History Month. It is being organised by the Draper Together charity.

The film features Sarah O’Connor, Anthony Bryan and Judy Griffith who lost jobs, savings and their health facing deportation back to countries they could barely remember because of the scandal.

“I’m delighted to be joining members of Draper Together for this unique screening in a community that has dedicated itself to offering a place of inclusion” said Mr Olusoga.

The event starts at 7.30pm.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey pub has apologised after refusing to have a poppy appeal collection tin in its premises.

A staff member at The St James of Bermondsey refused to have a collection tin for the poppy appeal last week, which raises money to help members of the Armed Forces community.

The decision, which the craft beer joint said was ‘inadvertent’, sparked a fierce backlash – and now the boozer has apologised, saying it will donate money from pint sales to the Royal British Legion.

“Earlier this week a member of the team at St James of Bermondsey inadvertently refused the placement of a Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal collection tin within the pub; this was an error of judgement,” said the business in a statement.

“By way of an apology and to underline the value we place on the life changing work that The Royal British Legion undertakes we have committed to making a five pence donation for every pint sold at the St James through

the week of Remembrance Sunday to the charity.”

The trendy St James’s Road boozer added: “Our apologies again from all of the team at St James of Bermondsey.”

The pub had earlier insisted to customers who left negative reviews over the “absolutely disgusting and disrespectful,” decision that “we would never refuse a Poppy Appeal collection at St James,” and that there had been a “mix-up.”

The apology has been welcomed by some punters of the pub on social media. “Good on the pub to realise the problem and redeem the situation, can’t knock them for the effort to rectify the situation and offer of a donation from each pint is good enough,” said Facebook user, Stewart Nicol.

“Give them the chance to put things right.”

But another, Stacey Hewlett, said: “Won’t be giving your business any of my money regardless if you’ve now decided to support the poppy appeal.

“Disgraceful to refuse in the first place… How dare you turn your backs on the people who fought for your freedom.”

The appeal is the Royal British

Legion’s largest fundraising event, held every November, throughout the period of remembrance.

The poppy is a world-wide symbol of remembrance for those soldiers who lost their lives in conflicts from the First World War onwards.

Their sacrifice is honoured with a symbolic poppy, after the poppies of Flanders Fields in World War One. Money from donations given to the Royal British Legion from its appeal goes towards helping current and exservicemen and women, and well as their families.

millwall fans show Poppy pride

A poppy badge with Millwall FC’s crest has been launched again this year with profits going to the Royal British Legion.

Stocks of the pin badge, which shows a 2019 poppy and the Lions crest, sold out last year – but now they are back in stock ahead of the official poppy appeal campaign launch later this month.

For those who are not Millwall supporters, pins have been made for all teams across the Premier League, Championship, League One and Two.

All profits from the sale of the badge will go towards the British Legion’s charitable work.

The charity, founded by veterans of the First World War, helps members of the Armed Forces community and is the national custodian of the military covenant between the nation and our soldiers.

Liberal Democrat councillor Graham Neale, from the Draper Estate, who represents St George’s ward and rides a Yamaha XS1100, spotted the wouldbe thieves pushing a Honda scooter at 2pm last Monday near his own doorstep, in Lamlash Street.

Earlier that day he had met with Southwark Police to discuss improving motorbike security, as often stolen scooters are used in street crimes, especially phone snatches.

"As a biker myself so I’m well aware of bike thieves, and I took a second look at them and their faces. I turned round, and started to take chase,” he told the News.

“I didn’t have time to call 999 and take photos of the thieves. I thought as soon as they heard me calling the cops they would scarper.

“The young boys looked at me, and realised the game was up.

“I didn’t want to put myself or anyone in danger, so rather than getting stuck in, I just reached for my phone” After being pursued for just a few yards they ditched the scooter and made a run for it.

Hearing the commotion, concerned residents ran out onto the Elephant and Castle street, with one saying he had seen a young man running round in search of his missing wheels.

The biker, a Deliveroo driver who had been on his lunch break, was fortunately reunited with the scooter.

According to the Met, more than 9,000 scooters, mopeds and motorbikes were stolen in London in the last year.

However, after increased awareness of thefts and a police crackdown, with Operation Venice, the number of thefts seen between July 2018 and June 2019 was down by a quarter compared to the same period the previous year.

Owners are advised to lock, chain and cover their bikes to help prevent theft.

The week-long festival organised by Walworth Society volunteers and local history buffs aims to tell the history

of Walworth through its homes and community.

A team of enthusiasts have been trained up, with a bit of support, in archive research and conducted their own research into the history behind their front doors.

Neil Crossfield, one of the local history-based researchers, explains: ”London history has always fascinated

me, but unfortunately, much of what has been written focuses on the ‘great and good’ and major events.

“Being involved in researching the history of my house has allowed me to look at the lives of ordinary people and how they lived in the past.

“Using the research skills, I learnt during volunteer sessions at the Southwark Local History Library, I have

Reg O’Donoghue says during the course of his research it dawned on him how remarkable it is that he has ‘survived’ in this corner of Walworth for 86 years and counting.

“Born in South Street, now renamed Dawes Street, adjacent to Wooler Street in 1933, my early memories were of living with my parents in Portland Street until my marriage to Maureen in 1958,” he says.

The couple went on to spend the next 20 years moving no more than 400 yards, including flats in Liverpool Grove, Saltwood Grove and then, finally, 21 Wooler Street, one of the ‘cottages’ in the Octavia Hill Estate.

“Under the original landlords, the Church Commissioners, properties were only rented out to the children of existing tenants; an early example of the ‘closed shop’.

“This was a clever stance taken by the landlord, ensuring any rent arrears that was run up by the children would be ‘discussed’ with their parents,” he says.

“Then, in the late 18th century, trains allowed city workers to live further out and poorer people moved to the area. Octavia Hill was an 18th century social reformer who led the way in providing social housing for the poor.

By this time, Reg and Maureen had celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary (1983), 40th (1998), 50th (2008) and even their own Diamond jubilee in 2018 after 60 years together.

“The thought I might have to leave 21 Wooler Street appalled me,” he says.

Amid these concerns, tenant associations started a campaign to oppose the sell-off, with support from MP Harriet Harman – all to no avail.

The properties were sold on and, within weeks he says, the rent went up by twelve per cent.

Joanne’s great grandmother, Margaret Newell (nee Pickering) taken outside 54 Henshaw Street

Joanne Sumner’s history of Henshaw Street Forty-eight-year-old Joanne Sumner, who lives in Petts Wood, Kent, has a strong connection to Walworth through her mother’s family, who originate from Henshaw Street.

Her great-great grandparents, Margaret Pickering and Alfred Newell, a printer, lived at number 54.

Joanne’s nan, Rose Waring, nee Newell, was born in 1920. She lived on the street for an incredible 80 years, and raised Joanne’s mother there too.

The pair spent Joanne’s childhood visiting the Walworth street.

In 1979-80, Rose relocated to number 63, where she lived until 2000 before moving to Kent.

“My Nan was so well known in the road, she was a very central figure in the community. Nan knew everyone.

“I spent a lot of my school holidays with her and got to meet all her neighbours. As a child, I knew all the colours of the doors, odds and evens, with the double doors together at the front,” she said.

“I remember the little low walls at the front of the houses because they didn’t have gardens, just a small yard, with high walls between each property.

“You only had a little area in front of your lounge window with room for the odd plant pot or two.

“I’ve been told that in pre-war times, the low walls had metal railings and, like very many properties during the war, they got taken down and the metal used for armoury.

“In the summertime, everyone used to sit on the front walls.”

Rose often took the young Joanne to East Lane Market: “What should have been a minute’s walk would take half an hour because you would stop and chat to people sitting on the front walls. It was terrific.”

And, even in her later years, Rose continued helping the street’s elderly residents, picking up their newspapers for them.

The family was not well off, and in the 1950s Rose became a single parent and struggled for money.

She worked the odd cleaning job and also turned her hand to sewing and making and repairing clothes, with a reputation as an accomplished seamstress.

My Nan was so well known, she was a very central figure in the community.

I spent a lot of my school holidays with her and got to meet all her neighbours “My Mum Lea, when she was a young lady, wanted to go out at weekends and desperately wanted new outfits. But money was tight, so my Nan couldn’t afford to buy them so every weekend she would make my Mum a new outfit.

“Nan was known for her dressmaking. She made a lot of bridesmaid’s dresses and outfits for weddings of people in the street”.

Number 54 was host to some big street parties, and the community also became closer as children grew up and went on to marry friends nearby.

“Everybody would just gather there at 54. My Nan’s brother would sing; he had a voice, everyone said, like Tom Jones. Then one of the family would play the piano. They would make their own entertainment as there was no television in those days,” Joanne recalls.

“One of my nan’s sisters married one of the Powells. My Nan’s oldest sister married into the Chesney family. You’d probably have five or six properties that were all related by marriage.

“Some of the families then moved to Chatham Street, which runs parallel”.

Rose had been a life-long renter, for many decades the landlord was a Mr Sampson but, eventually, a larger company bought the property.

Even in the 1990s the old building was outdated and in dire need of renovating. It still didn’t have central heating.

After the family complained, the company offered to relocate Rose, but the family decided that as she was now in her 80s, they wanted her to live closer in Kent, and received a financial payment from the then-landlord to do so.

Consultation opens on the Bakerloo Line extension

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A new consultation opened on Monday into the most detailed plans yet for the Bakerloo Line extension.

Among the proposals are an integrated station entrance at Elephant and Castle to combine the ticket halls for Northern and Bakerloo lines; the route of proposed tunnels; and the location of primary and secondary tunnelling work sites.

The agency also wants suggestions for the names of the two proposed Bakerloo stations for the Old Kent Road.

The first, suggested for the junction of the Old Kent Road and Dunton Road, could be called ‘Old Kent Road’ or ‘Burgess Park’ said TfL. The second, at the junction with Asylum Road, could also be called ‘Old Kent Road’ or ‘Asylum’, TfL suggests.

TfL’s preferred option is for the bulk of the tunnelling work to be carried out at New Cross gate, with secondary work carried out at the site of the first Old Kent

Road station.

“The extension of the Bakerloo line in Southwark will help deliver our vision for the Old Kent Road, including hundreds of affordable new homes, jobs and facilities for local people,” said Cllr Johnson Situ, of Southwark Council.

“This is an opportunity for people to see the proposals in detail, have their say and maybe even come up with names for the new stations that will be created along the Old Kent Road.”

The extension, which would run from Elephant and Castle to Lewisham via the Old Kent Road and New Cross Gate is expected to help support 5,000 new jobs and 25,000 new homes.

“This consultation will help us further shape our plans for the Bakerloo line extension which will play a vital part in supporting London’s population growth by providing capacity for at least 60,000 extra journeys in both the morning and evening peak periods,” said Alex Williams, TfL’s Director of City Planning.

The ten-week consultation can be found on the TfL website by searching ‘Bakerloo Line extension’. It closes on Sunday December 22, 2019.

On Thursday, October 10, the Bank of England unveiled the new note, featuring the artist JMW Turner, which will be issued for the first time in February next year.

The overhauled banknote features

Turner’s painting The Fighting Temeraire which depicts the HMS Temeraire being towed to Rotherhithe to be broken up for scrap in 1838.

The vessel played a leading role in the Battle of Trafalgar, and JMW Turner’s painting of its final journey was voted the nation’s favourite painting in 2005.

Eagle-eyed locals may notice that the sun is depicted as setting in the east, if you’re looking north from Rotherhithe...

“Turner’s painting was transformative, his influence spanned lifetimes, and his

legacy endures today,” said the Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney.

“The new £20 note celebrates Turner, his art and his legacy in all their radiant, colourful, evocative glory.”

Other features on the denomination include a self-portrait of Turner, and the Queen’s face in a see-through window.

The polymer note which is more durable than paper and harder to forge joins the new Churchill £5 notes and Jane Austen £10 notes. A new £50 note featuring scientist Alan Turing is to follow in 2021.

Ella-Mae Michalski was told at 20 weeks pregnant that she would lose both of her girls imminently – but medical intervention ensured they were born safely.

The twins Bella and Ruby, born on Halloween last year, were born fourteenweeks-early with chronic lung disease, but are now thriving ahead of their first birthday.

“This Halloween, the girls will turn one and we are looking forward to a family celebration to mark the occasion,” said Ella-Mae who lives in Westminster.

“It is hard to believe how far we have come in a year – from a very frightening Halloween last year to one full of smiles and fun this year.”

She also thanked the Rainbow Trust, a charity which supports the families of children with serious illnesses. The family had help from the charity’s support worker, Fiona, while the twins were in hospital.

“Fiona gave us emotional support during the hardest time of our lives. We had no certainty the girls would make it, and this support made the world of difference to us,” she said.

“The magnitude of difficulty and the overwhelming rollercoaster that comes with having two sick children is unimaginably hard.”

The charity’s director of fundraising and marketing, Oonagh Goodman, added: “Ella-Mae has been through such an immensely tough time and we are so pleased that the twins are now thriving as they approach their first birthday.

“Our sincere thanks go out to Ella-Mae for helping us to raise awareness of the vital support we offer to families when they have a seriously ill child.”

his grieving mother, described him as a “pure hearted person” who had “never been involved in any knife crime and has never hurt anyone”. Within three days 150 people had donated more than £2,000.

At the time of going to press, no one has been arrested.

The death has brought more trauma to families, many of whom have said they were angry with the way the estate had been portrayed in the national press, as the “deadliest in Britain”.

The News understands the majority of gang-related activity, or targeted attacks, happens in a relatively small area known for its rat-run walkways.

In the aftermath of 2018’s murders, at a heated public meeting, Southwark Council leader Peter John pledged to reopen shut-down community spaces on the estate and commit £10,000 toward youth work.

Residents’ demands – including trimming back tree cover and installing comprehensive CCTV – were heeded and

taken forward.

But a year later this funding has run out and the CCTV is not completed. But the critical issue, residents say, is the future of their community spaces.

Brandon 1 TRA Tom Lloyd said last year the council decided to close the Jack Hobbs Club.

“However,” he said “with the murders last year and the unwanted press attention, the council backtracked after being criticised for closing the community space on the estate.

“Southwark have now invested £150,000 to repair the Jack Hobbs Club, to keep it open for couple of years, but are consulting on demolishing the building over the next few years.

“In reality the hall still has a commercial tenant, and almost no community activities have been run since April 2018, despite all the great plans we are being promised.

“We very much believe that their intention is a land grab, with the site most likely being sold to a housing association who will build £500K+ ‘affordable homes’ on the site.

“Despite the killings, there has been

gang violence, Elaine has been unable to use the Jack Hobbs Centre, instead moving the holiday camp’s base to Pasley Hall. She said the lack of hands-on help for her work had caused her unbelievable stress and a sense of disbelief.

“We are trying to show them there are opportunities out there and they can have a different life, and for them to sit down somewhere in a safe space and open up to us.

“We do not believe for a minute that

they don’t know what is going on, but some of them are very traumatised and it takes time to trust us. When I think about how much we are doing and how many lives were are affecting, about 100 people every week, we just really need help from organisations to continue.”

Another project struggling to find the money it needs to continue is ‘Growing Against Violence’.

Shaun Willshire, a retired policeman who spent three decades working at Peckham Police Station, uses his experience and obvious rapport with young people to go into schools and teach them how to spot the signs of gang grooming.

“Our premise is preventable education, and what we call ‘positive peer pressure’.

They might actually save their friend by remembering that bald, fat guy who came into their school.

“99.9 per cent of our kids here are amazing, and actually have great judgement because to them right and wrong really is black and white. But if you make the mistake of getting involved in a gang they will control you and your family - often they are controlled by debt, and it’s very hard to get out.”

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The Brandon Estate community and its youth workers say they are devastated, frustrated and increasingly angry after the death of an eighteen-year-old amid stalled promises to invest in youth work and safety improvements.

Last Thursday, Clinton Evbota became the third teenage boy to die on the Camberwell estate since 2018, just yards from where seventeen-year-old Rhyhiem Ainsworth Barton was found shot dead in Warham Street in May 2018, three months before Sidique Kamara was fatally stabbed on the same street.

Eighteen-year-old Clinton was attacked at around 8.20pm on October 10, and found on Grimsel Path after police were called by residents witnessing the attack.

A fundraiser set up to help pay for the cost of his funeral, and raise funds for

a lot of talk from Southwark, but very little action. The community hall was an integral part of the original design and vision by the acclaimed architect Edward Hollamby, who designed the Brandon estate to serve the needs of the whole community.”

All three TRA chairs want Southwark to keep the estate’s communal spaces in community hands - and pledge to not sell them off to any developers.

A public meeting was due to be held on the estate on Wednesday evening.

The News understands the first new CCTV cameras were added in April 2018, with the remainder due to go live by the end of this month.

Council-funded youth work on the estate includes Southwark Young Advisors, and an early intervention project aimed at eleven to nineteenyear-olds.

Councillor Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for community safety and public health, said: “I am so sad that a young man has tragically lost his life in our borough.

“My heart goes out to Clinton’s family and friends after they’ve suffered this devastating loss. I have made it my mission to do everything within my power to put an end to this kind of violence, which destroys families, breaks hearts and unsettles communities.

“We have responded to all the issues the Tenants’ & Residents’ Associations have raised with us and will continue to do everything we can to support residents, but we all know that tackling violent crime is hugely complex and challenging.”

‘We are trying to show them there are opportunities out there’

The News spoke to several key organisations who have been involved in Southwark’s own anti-knife strategies and plans, including those working with children on the Brandon and in its school catchment area.

All said the promises made last year had not been kept, and felt pessimistic about the future.

Elaine Joseph, a community worker with a friend on the Brandon, saw a gap in early years’ provision on the estate and set up a twice-weekly mothers and toddlers group in Rachel Leigh Hall last year.

Her organisation, iiChild, also runs summer camps for children and older teenagers in the summer holidays.

The £10,000 funding meant groups of around 70 children were able to go on day trips and get fed for the day.

But without enough storage space for their equipment, and difficulties securing a long-term space, she has had to take the project off the estate.

The mothers’ group is now based in St Pelier Hall, in Hillingdon Street, where she pays knock-down rent mostly funded by appeals through her network.

“I haven’t had any extra support or funding from the council, and I’m having

to apply for money just to pay the rent,” she explained.

“United St Savour’s said last week they would pay rent for the mothers and toddlers group which at least is a huge weight off my shoulders. We don’t charge anyone to attend as we realised for these people, they are struggling so much that even 50p or 25p is a barrier.”

“It’s not sustainable from year to year and there doesn’t seem to be any overarching strategic approach,” he said.

“A lot of funding has gone, and all the charities – it’s not just about us – are left competing over little pockets.

“We’ve had to pull out of some boroughs because the funding has gone, and when we’ve tried to get more I’ve been described as male, pale and stale.

“It’s just so, so offensive. My team is passionate about young people and we have a project with great results. That is what should be looked at.”

Council must give clear timelines to meet resident demands on the Brandon Estate after another killing

T

he Brandon Estate community in Camberwell is again facing unfathomable grief and distress after eighteenyear-old Clinton Evbota, a former resident of the estate, was stabbed to death in the centre of their estate on Grimsel Path on Thursday, October 10.

Clinton is the third young man who has been murdered on the Brandon Estate in just eighteen months after Rhyhiem Barton, aged seventeenm was killed in May 2018 and Siddique Kamara, aged 23, was killed in August 2018.

The morning after Clinton was killed I met up with the tenants’ association chairs and talked to residents on the estate with Cllr Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for community safety at Southwark Council.

People told me Clinton and his mother had moved to Kent to get away from gang trouble and to find a new way forward. He was studying hard for his A-Levels at college and had been working in a restaurant.

Residents are understandably angry and shaken at another dreadful, senseless waste of a young life.

The elderly residents feel traumatised and vulnerable after watching in horror from their tenant hall as Clinton fled from his attackers.

Children were making their way to school but having to go around police tape cordoning off part of their estate, which was now the scene of a terrible crime.

For families and the community who live on the Brandon this is not just a newspaper headline, this is their lives. For Clinton’s family, it’s their worst nightmare.

It is vital that the longstanding demands of the tenant’s association are met. They’ve been asking for CCTV. It’s installed, but not yet operational.

And the trees that they’ve been asking to be cut back are still in full leaf.

The TRAs are the heart of the community and know what’s needed.

They are holding a community meeting this week and Southwark Council will need to come with clear timelines on how they will meet their demands so the whole community can feel safer.

Council action is one important part of the picture, but the causes of this horrific violence are complex and have been developing over years.

Government cuts have hit every service, there are fewer after school clubs and holiday plays schemes, fewer support workers in schools and child and adolescent mental health are under strain.

These services are vital, especially for young people who are losing their way and are at risk of getting into trouble.

In every area there should be youth clubs and services for young people to help tackle knife crime and problems such as mental illhealth and school exclusions.

But no one single government department or public service can deal with this crisis.

It is time for the government to step up and provide focus and leadership. I’m backing the demand of the cross-party parliamentary group on knife crime, chaired by Croydon MP Sarah Jones, for the Government to start tackling knife violence as a public health issue.

This means putting in place a multi-agency approach with clear measurable targets, backed with proper resources and based on the principle that violence is not inevitable.

One practical example of this would be to embed youth workers in A&E departments to work intensively with young people who arrive with knife wounds at the crisis point when they are most likely to be able to be steered away from future violence.

Southwark is a great place to live.

But too many young people are dying violent deaths. This is a national crisis. We need leadership and more resources from government, and an end to the cuts.

he weather during September was mostly fine and dry with low rainfall; however towards the end of the month a pattern of wet and breezy conditions set in.

October brought cooler temperatures and more unsettled weather consistent with the onset of autumn. Occasionally a warm spell occurs mid-month when it can be unseasonably hot. There are no signs of a late heat wave this year!

Tuck in miniature bulbs - Tulips, Narcissus, Crocus and Snowdrops; all flower at different times and will be a welcome sight when there are few flowers in bloom.

The knife crime epidemic can only truly be tackled when police take down those at the top

linton’s family made the difficult decision to leave their home and move somewhere new to try to keep him safe. How cruel that their efforts were ultimately in vain.

Although the circumstances of his attack are not yet know –as yet no one has been arrested and police have shared no descriptions or information about his attacker or attackers – it is widely believed that he had decided to return to Camberwell to visit his friends.

There is no suggestion that Clinton was involved in a gang himself, but we do know that young boys from this estate and others are at risk of grooming and abuse by older men.

Families choose to move for various reasons, but in some cases this is an active policy due to credible threat to life or other intelligence about the risk to a vulnerable person, and it is often coordinated with the police and local authority.

One youth worker we spoke to voiced concerns that the support for those families was enough.

In some cases they may find themselves shuttled between different local authorities and police forces, and swapping one area of deprivation for another – but without their support networks.

The county lines phenomenon means these highly organised drug networks have bases in all four ports, and are potentially landing in rival gang territory or in an area where their networks may be operating.

Vulnerable children who are at risk and join a new school immediately stand out. And on social media, they are always contactable and visible to their old community. Short of having a new identity, it is very difficult to truly leave one world or life behind.

The tactics used by gangs are akin to grooming by abusers and paedophiles. Everyone agrees that prevention, and giving young people the tools to spot these predators and say no is critical.

But the problem will only stop when the police take down those at the top. They are the ones truly responsible – not their victims.

A long-term cancer patient at Guy’s Hospital has landed his first album deal – aged 81.

Rex Martey, from Sydenham, has performed in pubs and clubs across London for over six decades, and has finally achieved his dream of getting an album released.

One of the tracks on the album, called African Touring Holiday, is even dedicated to the nurse who primarily treated him for his prostate cancer at Guy’s.

“This is a dream come true for me because I have been singing and playing sax for a long time,” said the 81-year-old.

“But my health has been deteriorating for many years and I have been coming to Guy’s as a patient since 1983.”

His condition is currently stable, but requires him to have dialysis three times a week under the care of Guy’s renal and urology services.

Mr Martey paid tribute to his care, saying: “I always say to people, if it wasn’t for Guy’s and St Thomas’ I would be dead.”

A quarter of the sales from his album will go towards the Guy’s and St Thomas’s charity.

One song, called ‘My Louisa’ is dedicated to Louisa Fleure, lead urology clinical nurse specialist at Guy’s.

“One day I was coming home from the hospital and I was thinking about how sweet and how helpful Louisa was, and such a lovely lady,” added Rex. “I told my wife that I wanted to write a song about her and she was happy with that.”

Coyle: ‘Despite living here for 47 years my constituent is being told to leave’

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Neil Coyle has described the EU settlement scheme as a “shameful mess” after one of his constituents’ application was rejected – despite living in the UK for nearly 50 years.

The Bermondsey resident moved to London in 1972 and since then has clocked up 47 years of continued residence and contributions, working as a cleaner. She is one of 10,000 EU nationals living in Coyle’s constituency.

Despite still being in possession of her original paper “certificate of registration”, her application to the Home Office was denied. If the decision is not overturned she would be unable to remain in the country.

“A constituent brought this to see me.

She’s lived here since 1972. Home Office now claims she has no right to be here despite 47 years continued residence/ contribution.

“She has no family in Portugal any more. I hope to overturn this shameful mess.”

According to the government, 1.5 million people so far have applied to the scheme in order to gain official status to live and work in the country after December 31, 2020 – well under the total estimated number of EU citizens in the UK. The application system has been criticised for a backlog in applications, technical problems, and a rise in the number of people being given “presettled status” – limited leave to remain - when they should be eligible for full status.

Rescued fox takes refuge in the nearest boozer

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A fox has been rescued after getting stuck on Blackfriars Bridge.

The stricken creature needed help after getting precariously stranded on a pillar of the bridge on Thursday afternoon, October 10.

The frightened fox was perched on the tiny ledge before jumping into the water.

“In the end we had to cordon off the bridge to keep the onlookers back and then with the help of the fireboat we managed to herd him towards the stairs and he ran off and took refuge in a pub garden,” said London Fire Brigade Watch Manager, Kevin Elson.

“While we were happy to assist in this case, we would always encourage people to call the RSPCA in the first instance if they see an animal stuck or in distress.

“Firefighters love animals too and we will always help if the RSPCA require our assistance and specialist equipment.

“One of the key things for us at incidents like this is to ensure members of the public stay safe and don’t enter the water to try and help.”

Fire crews were called by concerned members of the public at around half twelve, and the fox was successfully rescued by 2pm.

A fire engine from Dowgate Fire Station and a fire boat from Lambeth River Fire Station attended.

Plans to house second refugee family

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Herne Hill residents are raising funds to resettle a second refugee family in SE24 – a year after the successful scheme saw an Iraqi family move into their new home.

£15,000 is needed for the Herne Hill Welcomes Refugees group to apply to rehome a new family via the Home Office, and cover the initial cost of helping them start a new life in south London.

Founded in 2017, the group of 20 volunteers helped the first family to move to the area find a house, English lessons, school places, access to a GP and medical treatment, and set up their new home through the community sponsorship scheme.

So far, 344 refugees have been rehomed in the UK through community sponsorship which involves a group making an application for refugees to be placed in their area – with evidence they can provide the requisite support.

On November 1, music venue Off the Cuff will be holding a fundraising event with performances from funk and soul bands Talking Strawberries and Liquid Crystal, plus a life auction, food stall, and opportunity to hear about the organisers’ plans.

Gents prefer blondes, but why?

BAG revisits its past Lorelei Lee, the platinum haired gold digger, has resurfaced in the musical production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes at the Union Theatre, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor...

Originally a 1925 novel written by Anita Loos, its versatility has led to a silent film, a Broadway musical, but perhaps most memorable is the iconic 1953 film starring Marilyn Monroe in the lead role, alongside brunette Jane Russell.

Slick as this 2019 production is, the theme of a beautiful blonde, scheming female hellbent on securing herself a wealthy man while scorning friend Dorothy for ‘finding the only bootlegger that didn’t have any money', felt uncomfortable.

In recent years, we have seen increasing adaptations of theatre productions, their purpose being to provoke us to question stereotypes

- think Shakespeare and all those amazing reworkings, but not so in this age-old stereotype of the dumb blonde.

I couldn’t help wondering why!

While some productions are best left in their original format, alongside the countless updates, the lead character, Lorelei Lee, though played amazingly well by Abigayle Honeywill appears glaringly ripe for a reworking. In fact, parody becomes the only way of legitimising her role, and that’s really just skirting around the blonde in the room.

Cast members, including Lorelei, (renamed in court by the judge to represent lotta lies...) did exceptionally well, performing songs and dances worthy of much bigger venues. In fact, they did a grand job of executing dances that incorporated acrobatic moves, in a very limited space, whilst still

looking the height of sophistication.

Recognisably famous numbers featured, such as Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend and Bye Bye Baby, all sung superbly.

Being a musical with so many numbers to perform there was a sense that the story got lost amongst the speedily changing scenes. Backing up the story, though, were the detailed flapper girl costumes and general 1920s iconography rooting it firmly in its time period.

Puzzling, well performed but full of possibilities!

Willie and Sam are black workers in a white-owned restaurant in Athol Fugard’s Master Harold and the Boys, writes Michael Holland...

They have worked for the family for many years and were a big part of son Hally’s growing up years; their room would be the go-to place for sanctuary when his father was drunk.

But memories are short when minds are filled with hate in apartheid South Africa.

As they clean the floor and lay the tables the men are practising their quick step and waltz in readiness for the Port Elizabeth dance championships coming up. Sam, the smoother mover of the two, helps Willie add a little style and panache to his steps as they trade the kind of banter that comes from a long friendship.

Then Hally arrives home from school and wants help with his homework, which Sam has provided for most of the boy’s

It doesn’t seem possible that the Bermondsey Artists’ Group(BAG) was formed so long ago in the derelict cafe by the abandoned lido in Southwark Park, especially when the work being produced by those founding members today is just as fresh, vibrant and relevant as it was when they first opened the Café Gallery as a way to ensure they had somewhere they could exhibit their art, writes Michael Holland...

This year’s BAG exhibition - RE - gives more than 50 local artists the chance to REvisit work they were making when they first joined the group; REflect on how their work has developed while being a member, then perhaps to REconsider, REconstruct and REinvent.

RE covers the whole range of media and has something for every visitor. For me, who has followed the group’s work for many years, the biggest reinvention was from Tony Fleming who has worked in various ways, but this year has decided on a portrait - Scotch Mist. life, and a different atmosphere arrives with him. The initial laughs fade away to nothing as the boy tries to appear more cleverer than the man that has done more to teach him than anyone else. A call from his mother to say she will be bringing his father home from the hospital turns the mood darker and Hally, who obviously as issues with his dad, acts out by ordering Sam and Willie to get on with their work.

Sam, the older and wiser of the men, senses something wrong so engages the young boy in talking about childhood memories and all becomes good between them again as they sit there talking. Just sitting and talking.

Sitting and talking so much I was dying for something to happen. Literally. The attempts at involving Hally in their dancing and fun did a little to break down the barrier of apartheid but this 3 hander had became torturous. And when the boy says bad things about his father, Sam tells him not to be

Of course, there is the usual Fleming flippancy that always finds a way of reminding the viewer not to take life too seriously, while keeping us aware of the seriousness of his art.

There were many highlights. I was intrigued by Jonathan Hood’s separating out of cassette tapes from their labels and cases; Ron Henocq’s wall drawings that revisited cave paintings of our ancestors; the Peter McLean piece that had similarities to his Pilgrim Boy by the river at Rotherhithe and the text-based art of Charlie Fox. But there is so much more to see at this exhibition; more from the longterm members that have been integral to the history-making work of the Bermondsey Artists’ Group, and from new members who will ensure its continuing existence.

Master Harold and the Boys is a good play but I’ve seen better attacks on apartheid and racism. In this I wasn’t even sure their enmity was real, but just another schoolboy tantrum that had got out of hand and would all soon be forgotten.

Great set and great performances, with a decent ending that took too long to come.

The comfort of the white suit You could tell straightaway that The Man in the White Suit was going to be a cross between a Carry On film, the Beano and the Keystone Kops, writes Michael Holland...

The jokes were silly and the reactionary gurning was awful, yet I still thought this comic strip cartoon that had come to life was jolly good fun.

Accident prone inventor Sidney Stratton wants to make the world a better place by developing a fabric that never needs cleaning and never wears out, via a serious of comedy booms, bangs and explosions in the laboratory where he tries to make his dream come true: ‘I know exactly where I went wrong’ became his mantra as he emerged battered and burnt after each blast. He pontificates in the pub about how his creation will save everyone money and leave time for enjoying life if he is given the opportunity to get his theory right.

Within seconds of Meera Syal’s entrance as actress Dotty Otley playing Mrs Clackett in a small theatre company’s rehearsal of Nothing On, a bedroom farce in the old British tradition of illicit naughtiness, we were laughing. We were soon aware that this was a play within a play, which eventually turned into a farce within a farce as the forbidden liaisons occurring in the play were reflected in the cast. This art reflecting life mirror image carried over to the Noises Off programme that included a spoof programme for Nothing On’s ‘World Premiere’ performance in Weston-superMare, along with cheesey adverts.

The theatre company cast included all the usual suspects: a Lothario director cheating with two of the company, a drunk, a mother hen, a secret affair, and one going through a divorce, which made it all very difficult for the actors when on stage, and to be civil to each other backstage. These factors the director has to deal with are all revealed in Act 1, so Noises Off then shines a big bright spotlight on all of that in Act 2 when the set takes us backstage where the stage exits now become backstage entrances and we see that all the banging of doors has added anger.

Act 3 finds the cast minutes away from the first matinee performance.

Some are in meltdown, some have gone missing, the stage manager is told to get ready to go on stage to perform the role of a missing actor, and there is general madness.

Act 4 is the evening performance and it is now pure pandemonium.

But this magical mayhem has to be choreographed and performed perfectly

of life imminent, Sidney gets fired but then rehired soon after when he miraculously stumbles on the miracle formula. Cue drinks all round in the Trimley Arms and a trip to Blackpool for his landlady. But then reality kicks in, the industrialists don’t want their customer base buying just one of everything, and the workers worked out they would be out of work in six months. Poor Sidney was caught in the middle of the workforce and the capitalists with the boss’s daughter who, having fallen for the nice scientist, helped him escape their wrath.

A chase through town and country ensued with the angry, pitchfork wielding mob hot on his heels. The logistics of this was dealt with by using little cutouts bumping along a simply painted backdrop, which drew one of the few belly laughs of the evening.

Stephen Mangan and the cast all do a good job of what they had to do, and with their own built in band they knocked out the occasional illustrative tune. Even, in one song, rhyming gizmo

with machismo, which I was impressed with. Yes, it was that kind of night.

The many sight gags got more laughs than the verbal jokes, which meant that the set, with its drop down MG sports car, and foldaway bedroom, became the star of the show.

The Man in the White Suit is oldfashioned fun. There is no subtlety here, no sardonic wit, it is knockabout, slapstick laughs that would not be out of place on kids’ TV, and that is fine. After a month of plays dealing with apartheid, political scandal, train crashes and hurricane devastation, something as light and breezy as this comfort blanket of a play fitted the bill perfectly. My companion noted, ‘It made you feel safe, you knew you wasn’t going to get hurt or upset.’

to look like chaos, so hats off to director Jeremy Herrin. Three cheers, too, for set designer Max Jones, but the sight of that splendid cast running around, up and down and in and out of doors will be etched in my mind forever. At times there was so much going on it was difficult to take it all in - Even the backdrop took on a life of its own. It really was choreographed chaos and it was incredible. Every one on that stage, without exception, brought a touch of brilliance to the production. No one stood out more than another but each actor stood out.

The writer Michael Frayn was in the audience and deservedly got a standing ovation along with the brilliant cast.

Despite opening nine years ago, the show is packed full with spine-tingling surprises that make it very easy to see why this play has had such enduring successes.

Our host for the evening is the rational Professor Goodman – with Simon Lipkin fluently taking over proceedings from show co-creator Andy Nyman – who ushers the audience through his lecture on his experiences with the paranormal, three incidents in particular of which he has found to be unexplainable. Lipkin is well supported throughout by Gary Cooper, Preston Nyman and Richard Sutton as they regale the audience with their scintillating, sinister tales of the supernatural, scaring the living daylights out of the auditorium with sophisticated style.

Of course none of this can be achieved without the talent of the creative team.

With hazard tapes and flickering lights draped around the theatre as soon as you enter, these stories are brought to life by

the imaginative design from Jon Bausor.

The tension is built terrifically with James Farncomb’s clever lighting design and the eerie, unsettling sound effects from Nick Manning. Scott Penrose’s special effects are the icing on the cake as the characters (and audience) are taken to meet their darkest fears.

With warnings to keep the secret, I certainly won’t be sharing any plot spoilers and I would be remiss to anyway.

That is the whole fun of it, the unknown – they are daring you to book tickets without knowing every trick and turn of the production. Sure Ghost Stories may not be for those with a nervous disposition or the faint hearted, but its clever balance between humour and horror is awfully impressive, even if you do spend the whole 80 minute runtime on the edge of your seat, eyes covered and clinging to the person next to you.

the Peckham ladies anti-slavery fight

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The Museum of the Docklands at West India Quay has a permanent gallery, London Sugar and Slavery, which opened in 2007.

In a section on women campaigners there is a pamphlet printed for the Peckham Ladies African and AntiSlavery Association, a little-known group of women who, as consumers, used their purchasing power to boycott slave-grown West Indies sugar.

The two main boycott campaigns came in 1791-1792, and 1825-1899.

In 1791, abolitionist campaigner William Fox published his anti-sugar pamphlet, and the same year, the first abolition bill, was rejected in parliament.

The pamphlet sold 70,000 copies within just four months, and the following year sugar sales had dropped by a third as an estimated 400,000 people boycotted sugar – with women’s campaigning groups at the vanguard. Without the vote, they had to take direct action to influence politicians.

In 1807, the slave trade was abolished throughout British

Colonies. But the practice had continued in the West Indies, and so in the 1820s a new campaign gathered momentum.

As before, it was primarily supported by female anti-slavery associations. The Free Sugar Ladies of Peckham were one such group. And they were ridiculed in the press for their campaign.

In 1829, an article by an anonymous author appeared in the Leicester Journal, describing the inaugural meeting of the new Peckham Ladies African and Anti-Slavery Association.

It said: “Where Peckham exactly is situated, we cannot take upon ourselves to say, but we have reason to believe that it lies somewhere between Deptford and Camberwell; and we must say, the female natives appear to be on an uncommonly amiable turn of mind…”

The author publishes their names, “for the honour of the ladies, for the gratification of their husbands, and for the edification of the empire of Peckhamia” – presumably in an attempt to embarrass them – and then makes a series of cheap jokes about their names before mocking their fundraising efforts.

He then encourages them to “devote

themselves to the respective duties of their own lives, to attend to the wants of their poor neighbours, of whose necessities and claims they may fairly judge; to look after their own little household affairs… and leave the regulation of great national questions to the Government…”

Many of the names listed were Quakers who met at Friends Meeting House on Highshore Road, then Hanover Street, now used as a sorting office.

Peckham was home to several prominent Quaker families, including Elizabeth Taylor, who went on to marry George Cadbury and establish Bournville Village in Birmingham.

Those involved in the anti-slavery society included Elizabeth Pettipher Cash (1794-1894), and the daughter of William Naish (1785-1860), the author of the pamphlet Reasons for Using East India Sugar; Mary Naish.

But despite this groundswell of support for abolition, it would take until 1833 until slavery was finally abolished throughout the British Empire.

Dulwich’s Clunis eyes FA Cup history

Clunis has a long association with Rose.

He explained: “When I was about fourteen, fifteen years old there was an organisation called Aspire that Gavin runs. They pick up young people, talented footballers to join and you go to college and play football.

“That’s how I became part of Dulwich Hamlet.

“I completed my BTEC Sport qualification but I didn’t go to

university, I was playing football and working.

“This is my first season full-time.

It’s good because it’s something I’ve always wanted to do. Even when the football does finish I can say I played full-time at one point in my career.

“I think it’s better for us when it comes to match-days, we’re better prepared and fitter than other teams.

It benefits us.”

Rose’s Aspire academy partners

with educational institutions to help participants with their career paths.

Clunis continued: “It’s very important because in south London where we grew up it’s gated, you can’t really see outside of it. If it’s not football or it’s not music, that’s it. You think, ‘what else am I going to do if I fail in that?’

“But Aspire give you education and let you know there are other things in life, it’s not just football, you can do so many other things.

“People that were in my age group when I was in Aspire have gone on to be motivational speakers, there’s an accountant, a lawyer. There are so many other options.

“From the age of fifteen it’s mainly just football because you’re still at school. Once school finishes and it comes to going to college that’s when Aspire get involved.”

Clunis has a close relationship with his club boss and described what he’s like in the dressing room.

“He’s been very good for me,” Clunis said. “He’s from the same area I’m from so he knows what it’s like growing up.

When you get other managers that are not from where you’re from they might not understand you. I feel like Gavin understands me.

“His mood is appropriate. If he needs to be angry he’ll be angry and if it calls for calm he’ll be calm. You need a bit of both, you can’t have someone that’s mellow all the time because you’re thinking: 'Does this manager really want to win?’ When he’s angry he needs to be angry because it makes us get out there and want to improve.”

Another positive for the Hamlet manager was Hunte’s display. He impressed as a lively and creative spark between the midfield and frontline.

“I was so happy he took his goal so well and I think there's more to come from him,” Rose continued.

“Connor can excite people. He can run with the ball, he's got a lot of individual ability and we encourage him to get on the ball and hurt people.”

Dulwich travel to National League South rivals Havant & Waterlooville this Saturday with a place in the FA Cup first round at stake. The Hamlet haven’t reached that stage since 1998.

Rose was going to reflect on his side’s latest league game before turning his attention to that huge cup contest.

He continued: “Right now my focus is on [the Weymouth game], because I

have to think about how we can start getting those draws into wins, which ain't easy.

“I think we'll have a reflection on [Saturday], on the performance, then on Monday and Tuesday we start focusing on Havant.

“Everyone dreams about getting to the first round, second round, third round, of course we do, and I do as well, but I think we'd best pay respect to Havant and worry about them first.”

Top scorer Danny Mills captained the Hamlet against Weymouth, but endured a frustrating afternoon, as did in-form strike partner Ade Yusuff.

But the manager was satisfied with his two strikers’ efforts.

“They had to work really hard and sacrifice themselves for the team,” Rose explained.

“At times it can be a thankless task but they were both honest and worked really hard.”

On Mills, Rose added: “There were times we got into wide areas and didn't cross the ball enough for him. That's not really Danny's fault, that's down to the chaps outside of the box who are crossing it.

"But as time goes on, I'm sure they'll recognise that.”

NYREN CLUNIS hopes to create a fairy-tale when Dulwich Hamlet play in the final qualifying round of the FA Cup for the first time in nineteen years this weekend.

The Hamlet travel to Havant & Waterlooville this Saturday for a place in the first round of the competition.

Dulwich are seven points off Havant in National League South, but Clunis believes promotion in just their second season at this level should be a target.

First, though, he wants to help the side create more history in the world’s oldest cup competition, as they aim to reach the first-round proper for the first time since 1998.

“I’d love a first-round game,” Clunis said. “I’ve been here ten years so this is the furthest I’ve been in the FA Cup. I’ve seen stories on BBC One of nonleague clubs progressing through and I’d love it to be us this year.

“Ideally I would love to progress with this club. I would love to get this club into League Two, two leagues away. Hopefully this year we can get promoted then the next few years after that get some new players in and get into the Football League.

“I’ve enjoyed every year since I’ve been here. I’m looking forward to many more years and hopefully we get promoted again.”

GAVIN ROSE wants Dulwich Hamlet to start turning league draws into wins after last Saturday’s 2-2 stalemate against Weymouth left the side in fourteenth place in National League South.

Speaking immediately after the game, Rose praised his team’s performance against sixth-place Weymouth.

“I think we played a good opponent, so I don't think we should take it for granted,” Rose said.

“It was an encouraging performance and if we can play at that level and above we'll be on the right path.”

The Hamlet took a 1-0 lead when a defensive mix-up allowed Connor Hunte to stroke the ball into the empty net, but the Dorset visitors turned the game around either side of the halftime break through goals from Lionel Ainsworth and Yemi Odubade.

“With their enthusiasm they want to do things quickly, but sometimes it’s about game management and knowing how to break the play up. I’ve got to take responsibility for it as well.

“I’m disappointed but in another way I’m really pleased because our unbeaten run goes on. The girls understand that I’m hard on them, and rightly so, because we’re very demanding. That’s the only way to get them to play at a higher level.”

The Lionesses face Watford under-18s in the League Cup this Sunday.

Reid added: “It gives us a chance to work on some of the things that weren’t so great [last Sunday]. I’m a great believer in if you work on things you get better at them.

“There are going to make mistakes, but it’s how they learn from them.”

FISHER FOOTBALL Club held a collection for Charlie Wynn last weekend as they progressed to the second round of the FA Vase.

Luke With gave the hosts the lead against Greenwich in the 20th minute and two second-half goals from Billy Brown sealed their passage through.

It was a first victory in charge for boss Ajay Ashanike.

Wynn took ill during a six-round sparring session in March 2018 and it was later discovered he had suffered a large bleed on the brain.

He was taken to Kings College Hospital where he had life-saving surgery. Wynn remained in hospital for ten weeks in a minimally conscious

Manger Danny Gibson introduced substitutes Ricky Essex and Khane Wilson and they immediately started to cause the hosts problems.

Lynn season starts with a bang

LYNN ABC’s season is up and running – with Henry Tootal winning his first-ever bout with the club.

Tootal was competing at the Broad St ABC show at the Troxy last week, where he came up against Amino Egenti from the London Military.

His coaches on the night, Koyne Edwards and Jimmy Moore, said they

“could not have been happier with his performance”.

Tootal boxed to instruction from the first bell and came away with a unanimous points win.

His coaches added: “You cannot ask any more from a boxer in his first bout.”

Tootal is next in action at the London Military show in Bromley on November 8.

FRANK FIELDING says he can “see the light at the end of the tunnel” – and admits the last year has been a “nightmare”.

Fielding, 31, injured his quad in the first game of the campaign – tearing it completely off the bone – and after only seven appearances last season for Bristol City it meant another lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Former England call-up Fielding is still not back training, but after being on crutches for more than a month, when he couldn’t even drive to the training ground, he’s well on the way to recovery.

“Hopefully in the next month I’ll be on the grass at some point,” Fielding said. “I actually really don’t now about when I’ll be playing, but I can see the

light at the end of the tunnel now.

“It’ll hopefully be within the next six weeks.

“It was a goal-kick in the first game and it just popped, the top of my quad came off the bone. It wasn’t ideal, to be honest.

“It was painful initially but I carried on for five or ten minutes. I felt something go but it was only when I had another kick afterwards that I knew I’d done something.

“I knew it was in that area but I didn’t realise the muscle had actually come off the bone.

“I had the family down for the weekend so it wasn’t great, I couldn’t really walk. Thankfully now I’m on the road to recovery. I’ve got a good scar, to be fair, it’s very neat!

“I was immobile for about six weeks, on crutches, no driving which was a bit of a nightmare.

“I was still coming in here. Chopper gave me a week off but then I was coming in. Muzza – Murray Wallace – was fetching me in quite a lot, and then Uber as well.

“The last twelve months have been a nightmare on a personal note. But I’ve tried to be a good team-mate, be bubbly in the changing room.

“Once I got the first couple of weeks done, after the shock, not that you get used to it, but you just have to deal with it. The more things you do in the gym the quicker you can get back.”

Fielding’s misfortune was Bart Bialkowski’s gain, while back-up Luke

Steele also played in the League Cup. “Bart’s done really well and I really like him as a person as well, he’s a top guy,” Fielding said. “Obviously Luke’s here who I knew from my days at Bristol City and he’s also a really good guy.

“It’s healthy competition and it’s part and parcel of the position, there’s only one person who can play. I’ll be a good team-mate and push Bart all the way.”

Chopper – Neil Harris – was instrumental in convincing Fielding to move to the club.

Fielding gave an interview to Love Sport Radio last week in which he said “he couldn’t believe it” when he heard the news of Harris’ resignation.

The prospect of being away from his family made a potential move more difficult for the goalkeeper – who is from Blackburn – but Harris persisted with a player whose work ethic and character the former Lions boss is a big admirer of.

Fielding explained: “I was talking to him every day. He was the only reason I came in the summer, to be honest.

I’ve got a great relationship with him and massively respect him.

“I’m absolutely gutted he’s not here now, but he’s done it for his reasons and we respect that. He’s a top human being.

“You never know what’s around the corner in football. He’s a top manager and an even better bloke. I didn’t realise how good he is as a fella.

“He’s always asking about your

I thought it was important to get my eldest little girl in school and settled.

“I met Neil really early in the summer, the week after the last game of the season. I was very keen to come here, I respected him and I knew what he’d done here.

“It was just logistically it was difficult, I was going to be away from home a lot. But he persisted and made it attractive for me to join.

“After going backwards and forwards I gave him my word I was going to do it. He gave me a few days to sort things out up there and that’s the kind of

bloke he is. I’d given him my word on a Sunday and signed the next Thursday.

“I’ve been at other clubs where managers have gone and there’s always that group of players that are happy, some are sad, and some don’t care because that’s the nature of the business, I suppose.

“Genuinely, everyone in that changing room was so upset. We’ve got a good changing room so there’s been no problem at all. Get your head down and crack on.

“I get back to my family when I can, but I’m in the routine now. And because I’m more mobile and can see that light at the end of the tunnel it helps.”

Millwall move forward without Harris, with Adam Barrett taking the side into Saturday’s game against Brentford.

If Barrett doesn’t get the job permanently, Fielding would like to see him and Paul Robinson stay at the club under the next manager.

“Absolutely. They know the place inside-out and it’s important that they do. You never know what’s around the corner but I’d be delighted if they did stay on.

“It was an unbelievable result against Leeds. Nothing has massively changed in the last few weeks. We’re obviously still in a little bit of shock that Neil is gone, but [Barrett] has kept a little bit of continuity and everyone is still here.

“We’ve just gone on business as usual, really.”

ADAM BARRETT says there are things he wants to “tweak and add” as he prepares his side for his second game as caretaker at Brentford on Saturday.

Barrett, 39, says he has been enjoying the responsibility of being in charge, despite a vastly increased workload compared to his first-team coach duties.

The former Southend defender insists he isn’t going to “rip up and change” the foundations put in place by Neil Harris and Dave Livermore.

But Barrett is determined to put his “stamp” on the side, even if he only has two more games in charge. Cardiff visit The Den next Tuesday by which time the Lions could have confirmed their next permanent manager.

Barrett, meanwhile, has been busy on the training ground during the international break, assisted by Paul Robinson and Kevin Nugent.

“We’ve got some really good work done,” Barrett told the News this week.

“Training has been really intense, I’ve been delighted with that. I’ve been delighted with the application of the players. There are a few things I want to tweak and add and that’s slowly been the process.

“It’s difficult when you’ve got important players away on international duty but it’s been great work. It’s all been good preparation for the weekend.

“The workload has obviously increased. Neil, Dave and I worked very closely but of course it’s increased now. It’s something I enjoy, I like the

responsibility, there’s no problem with that.

“I haven’t found it an issue, it’s something that’s got to be done and I’ve enjoyed doing it.

“Neil and Dave put an infrastructure in place here and it’s not going to be ripped up and changed overnight.

“There are certain ideas I’ve got and I want to put my own little stamp on things. But we know what our strengths are, we know what our weaknesses are.

We’ve got to make sure that we play to our strengths.”

Barrett has impressed in how he has handled his new responsibilities and with his work on the training pitch, according to some of those close to the Lions squad and staff.

It’s one of the reasons why he is in the running to take full control.

In his first game in charge Barrett faced Leeds’ Marcelo Bielsa, one of the most respected coaches in world football.

And this weekend he takes his side

to Brentford, who spent more than £20million on new players in the summer.

A win over the Bees could strengthen Barrett’s credentials for the permanent manager’s position.

Barrett continued: “We’ve had a really good few days training. It’s been good to get on the grass. We’ve been looking at the strengths and weaknesses of Brentford, we know what they’re about.

“I know how I want us to play, how I want to get about them. I’ll pick a team towards the end of the week to put in a good performance.

“Brentford are a strong side, they’ve been a good Championship team for a few years. They’ve got some very, very dangerous players in their team.

They’re free-flowing, they like to keep the ball.

“We know what they’re about and we know they’re a good side. We’re above them in the league. The fans there might get frustrated, but we’re just going to

concentrate on what we do, how we can affect the game. That’s what we’re working towards at the moment.”

Barrett will have to make at least one change for the fixture, with midfielder Ryan Leonard sidelined through injury.

The Lions caretaker boss is likely to replace Leonard with Shaun Williams, and he will also hope Jayson Molumby returns from under-21 European Championships qualification duty fit, to potentially form an all-Irish central midfield.

“Willo is a good player and knows the role,” Barrett added: “He came in and did very well against Leeds. We’ve been working hard this week and when all the lads come back from international duty, hopefully fit, we’ll look at picking a team with all the information we have and look to go and try to get the points at Brentford.

“Jayson’s an outstanding talent and I’m sure he’s going to be a top, top player and have a very good career.

“He’s got a little bit of everything and

I think people are beginning to see what he can do. He’s got great energy around the park, he can pick a pass. He can put his foot in when he needs to.

“He’s been in excellent form with the Irish team which is great. Jays is an important player for us, he’s young, hungry and wants to do well starting out in his career.

“Hopefully he’ll come back with no problems. He’s got an opportunity now to cement his place in the team.”

Whatever happens this weekend, Barrett has already enhanced his reputation.

Another couple of positive results and he is certain to have management offers, if Millwall decide to go with an outside appointment.

But for now he is eyeing three points at Griffin Park.

“Over time, if you get time, there are things you would like to add in. I’ve been delighted with the work so far.

Hopefully we can back up the Leeds performance and getting a similar result at Brentford would be fantastic.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk TOM BRADSHAW says he enjoys scoring more since returning from injury – and revealed the messages repeated to him by Neil Harris, the fruits of which were evident in his goal against Leeds United.

Bradshaw missed almost seven months of last season after suffering serious ligament damage against this weekend’s opponents Brentford last November.

Former Barnsley striker Bradshaw made his competitive return in August before scoring his first Lions goal in the 2-1 EFL Cup win over West Brom.

Bradshaw’s finish against Leeds – which was described by his team-mate Jed Wallace as “world-class” – was based on principles imparted to him by Harris. Bradshaw got in front of Whites defender Luke Ayling to flick Shane Ferguson’s cross into the far corner of the net with the outside of his right foot.

It was his fourth goal of the season, after he had earlier earned his side a penalty by getting in front of defender Guetano Berardi.

“You’re always learning as a footballer, taking in information and applying it to your own game,” Bradshaw said.

“Neil was big on, not necessarily being selfish, because as a striker you need to link the play, but being hungry.

Your job is to score goals. The gaffer always drilled into us that if you’re at the front post you scream for it.

“He was very much about getting into the mindset of being hungry for goals, to demand that the ball is going to be where you are in the box.

“It was a quite a tough angle and I don’t think I could have done anything else other than that to score.

“My mindset was to get in front of the defender and try to guide it into the far corner. It came off, it was a good finish and I enjoyed it. More important, it put us 2-0 up which was a rarity this season to have a little bit of breathing space.

“It was always a going to be a big game anyway before Neil left. The rivalry between Millwall and Leeds was sort of built up to me after the Luton game, how big it was for the fans.

“With Neil leaving it got the fans even more behind us, which was nice. It was a really enjoyable game and great to get the win.

“I had a lot of Barnsley fans messaging me basically saying well done for scoring against Leeds. It’s my favourite goal since I’ve been at Millwall.”

Like every member of the Millwall squad, Bradshaw was shocked when he read that Harris had stepped down.

Bradshaw continued: “I pretty much found out the same as everyone else, through social media. It was very much a surprise and shock to me.

“We hadn’t had an amazing start to the season but equally we had picked up some good results. It was a really big surprise.

“Neil signed me and was brilliant with me in my Millwall career. It was really sad to see him go. I had a nice little chat with him when I got into the training ground and he felt the time was right.

He wished me well, I wished him well and it was a nice conversation.”

Bradshaw revealed it was Harris who broke the news to him of his injury last season. The centre-forward came on in the 79th minute of November’s fixture at Griffin Park. He finished the game and, remarkably, also completed the

Early the next week, Harris phoned him to tell him the scan results showed a cruciate ligament tear.

Bradshaw had no idea he had suffered any damage.

“I went to close down Romaine Sawyers and he’s got past me, so as I’ve turned my foot slipped and forced my knee into a position it shouldn’t have been in,” Bradshaw recalled.

“I heard a crunch, didn’t really feel anything, there was no pain or swelling. I finished the game as usual and went into the changing room.

Because I was a sub I came back out and we had fitness work to do. I did that.

“I told Paul [Tanner], the physio, that I heard a crunch but I didn’t think there was anything to be alarmed about. I got it scanned on the Monday and the rest is history.

“After I had the scan Neil called me personally because he wanted to break the news to me, which is admirable, to be honest. It would have been quite easy to have let Paul ring me with the news.

“Neil – it’s weird calling him Neil now – called me directly and all the way through the process he was checking up on me and making sure I was positive.

He also wanted to make sure I was always learning while I was injured, the way he wanted me to play and the way Millwall expected me to play.

“I learned a lot during that period even though I wasn’t on the grass, and that was down to Neil.

“It isn’t something I look back on fondly, the last time I was at Brentford.

If anything, what happened last season makes me cherish scoring even more.

Every goal I score I appreciate and enjoy more.

“If I can get one on Saturday that would be brilliant.”

Car mystery is Rover TOM BRADHSAW has his Range Rover back – and thanked everyone for sharing his social media appeal.

Bradshaw posted a message on Twitter back in August asking for information after the vehicle was stolen in Dartford.

He had heard nothing since a week ago, presuming he would never get it back.

But it had been sitting in storage in Essex for some time, unbeknownst to the striker.

“I had a phone call from my insurance company about a week ago asking if my car had been recovered,” he explained. “I said as far as I was aware, no.

“They said they’d spoken to the police and it had been recovered two weeks prior. I hadn’t been told, the police hadn’t been in contact.

“It was found over in Brentwood, it’s in a storage container there. But unfortunately I had my V5 in the car, the proof of ownership, and whoever took the car threw everything out of it.

“So I can’t actually collect it because I’m waiting for a new V5 to come in the post. As soon as it comes I can go pick it up.

“I was dangerously close to buying a new car. So it was just in time that they found it, and I was amazed, to be honest. And thanks to everyone that retweeted my tweet and got the message out there.

“I’ve been trying to find out the details of what happened to it, but it’s been tough to get in touch with the guys that found it.

“As soon as I get the V5 I’ll pick it up and see what damage has been done.”

The young Lions scored four times in eighteen minutes through George Alexander’s brace, and goals from Jayden Davis and Sam Skeffington.

Barrett has enjoyed working with the squad during the international break, and hopes the Lions’ international contingent return fully fit.

He said: “I’m very keen to push them, I want that intensity and fight in our play. I want the work-rate and for everyone to fight for each other.

“Our sole aim is to go to Brentford and make sure we can go and get a result. Everyone is in a good place, we continue to wish all the lads well who are on international duty, and hopefully they come back with no problems. Former Millwall midfielder nets deal

Oxford hoping to pick up Jem

EX-MILLWALL winger Chris Taylor has signed for League Two Bradford City.

ANOTHER FORMER Lions midfielder, Jem Karacan, is on trial with Oxford United.

Taylor, 32, was a free agent after leaving Blackpool in the summer.

He had two spells at Millwall in 2012-13 and 2016, when he started the play-off final.

“I’m over the moon to be here, it has been a very long time coming,” Taylor said.

“I play with my heart on my sleeve and give 110 per cent each and every time I step on the pitch.

I cannot wait to pull on the shirt.

“I’ve been impressed by the standards in training. The lads are doing really well at the minute.

I’m looking forward to knuckling down and, hopefully, playing a big part in the club having a successful year.”

Karacan is looking for a new club after being released by Australian A-League side Central Coast Mariners.

Oxford need to bolster their ranks after Jamie Hanson and George Thorne picked up injuries.

Manager Karl Robinson is now running the rule over Karacan.

Karacan, 30, first joined Millwall on loan from Reading in 2008. The Turkish underage international spent two years at Galatasaray where he played in the Champions League.

He had a spell at Bolton before rejoining Millwall after Ben Thompson left for Portsmouth on loan.

He played six times for the Lions last season, four times in the league and twice in the EFL Cup.

Wandering Lions set for return MILLWALL’S INTERNATIONALS had mixed fortunes with their countries in the last week.

Shane Ferguson played 90 minutes at left-back for Northern Ireland as they conceded two late goals to the Netherlands in Group C of 2020 European Championship qualifying.

Josh Magennis scored in the 75th minute, but the hosts struck back through Marcus Depay, and Luuk de Jong and Depay again in added-time.

Ferguson was on the bench for the 3-2 friendly win in the Czech Republic.

ADAM BARRETT isn’t saying if he expects to take charge against Cardiff at The Den next Tuesday – with Millwall close to making a permanent managerial appointment.

Caretaker Barrett is in the running for the full-time job, along with Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth and Gary Rowett, who left Stoke last January.

Ainsworth’s odds had tumbled in to evens at the time we were going to press this week.

That made him the favourite over Gary Rowett, whom the Lions have also spoken to about the role. Barrett, however, was 12/1, indicating not too much could be read into the odds as the former Southend defender is very much under consideration.

Millwall would have to pay compensation for Ainsworth, who

is contracted to the Chairboys until 2023. Rowett is a free agent after he left Stoke last January.

With the short turnaround between games, and whatever Millwall’s decision over a permanent boss, it seems certain Barrett will be on the touchline against the Bluebirds.

Millwall would like to confirm a new manager early next week, and if it is Ainsworth or Rowett then they could be at The Den for the game against Neil Warnock’s side.

Barrett is looking for a second consecutive win as boss this weekend.

“I can’t wait for it, it’s another great game and a London derby,” he said.

“It’ll be a good atmosphere and I’m sure we’re going to pack the away end.

“It’s a game to really look forward to.

“I don’t know what’s happening with the Cardiff game, I’ve just been asked to take Saturday’s game at Brentford. I’m delighted to do that and I’m fully focused on it and the preparation. We’ll see what happens after Saturday.

“That’s what I’m concentrating on.

“The club will make their decision whenever they’re ready to do so. I’m really enjoying the challenge. Leeds was fantastic, I’ve really enjoyed this week. There’s a really positive vibe about the place, which is great.”

“I can’t wait until the next game.”

Bradshaw, 27, has still only started seven Championship games for the Lions since joining from Barnsley in August 2018.

The striker missed most of last season after suffering a knee injury at this Saturday’s opponents Brentford.

Bradshaw was eased back into the side this season by former Lions boss Neil Harris. Bradshaw revealed he had fans asking him why he wasn’t playing more, but he said he trusted his manager.

The former Walsall player’s last two goals contributed to four points against Luton and Leeds, putting him in strong contention to start against the Bees at Griffin Park.

“I’d hope so,” Bradshaw said. “We’ve got a great squad and a lot of good strikers here.

“I’m doing everything I can to push for that starting place and score as many goals as I can.

“There’s a difference between being medically fit and being out there and getting back to your sharpest.

“You can only get that through games. I had a lot of messages from fans saying, ‘why are you not starting?’

“But the management know what they’re doing, it takes a while to really build up that match fitness.

“I feel back to my best and I feel like I can be a threat.”
